Cong vice-president’s move seen as an enormous political risk after the LS disaster
T
By Suyash Padate
he dilemma in the Congress is over. The Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi is finally taking the plunge into the party's campaigning for the Assembly elections in the state. He will address two rallies tomorrow (Wednesday). The Congress yesterday confirmed that Rahul Gandhi will be holding two rallies on October 8, one at Mahad in Raigad district and the other at Ausa in Latur district. However, party sources have claimed that he is likely to address 10 rallies in the state. It may be recalled that the Congress was facing the dilemma as to what extent Gandhi should participate in the crucial Maharashtra Assembly polls, which comes a few months after the party’s disastrous show in the Lok Sabha elections. While a section in the Congress wanted Gandhi to go all out and take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on specific issues, some favoured a low-key campaign trail for him. It was eventually decided that he will address ten rallies in Maharashtra. The young Gandhi's plan to take to the battlefield with gusto comes as a surprise to insiders and observers alike given the party's negative rating in the poll-bound states and questions being raised about Gandhi's leadership after the Lok Sabha defeat. It goes against the grain of conventional wisdom. With Gandhi's prominent role in elections, Congress losses could further provide fodder to his critics within the party. In what would amount to enormous political risk, the Congress vice-president is finally entering the arena. The suspense has not ended over Congress president Sonia Gandhi's campaigning programme. The BJP on the other hand has made arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold totally 24 rallies in the state out of which five he has already addressed. The state election is crucial for both the Congress and the BJP. While the Congress has to prove that it is on the road to recovery after the decimation in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has the onerous task of maintaining the winning streak.
MASTER’S 2½-YR-OLD BABY PARENTS RETURN FROM EID SHOPPING TO LEARN OF CRIME

n what amounted to a heinous crime, a labourer raped the two and half year old baby who was the daughter of his boss. The boss had asked the labourer to take care of the baby and her elder sister for a few hours, as he along with his wife went to do Eid shopping. The incident took place in Mumbra on Sunday at around 10:30 pm, and the case has been registered in the Mumbra police station. As per the information provided by the Mumbra police station, the accused Abdul Mohammad Kaiser (36), who hails from Darbhanga, Bihar, had came to Mumbai in search of a job two years back and was working in one of the clothes workshops in Govandi. Kaiser was spotted there by the victim's father, who also owns a clothes workshop, and accordingly offered him a job in his workshop in

Mumbra and also gave him shelter by asking him to stay at his home. The victim's father used to stay with his wife and two daughters, one who was two and half years and another of 5 years and son of 6 years. With Eid falling on Monday, the victim's father planned to go shopping with his wife on Sunday and it was
then that the accused asked the victim's father to keep both his daughters at home with him. Acting in blind faith and trusting his worker, the victim's father handed over both of the daughters to the accused and proceeded to go out shopping. Taking advantage of the situation, even as the elder sister was playing outside,
the accused who was in an intoxicated stage then proceeded to rape the younger sister. The victim's father, with his wife and son, then returned and saw their youngest daughter unconscious after her trauma with the accused.. At the same time the accused, who was drunk came back home. When the victim's father questioned him about the incident, the accused didn't answer anything, where on the accused was soundly beaten by the locals who handed him over to the Mumbra police. "We arrested the accused and a case has been registered under section 376, 3 and 4. The victim who was found unconscious after the incident, was shifted to Kalwa hospital, and is in stable condition at present and in the tests conducted by the doctor it was found that the victim was raped," officials of the Mumbra police station said.

recent floods that ravaged the state have left the people in no position or mood to celebrate Eid. This is what the ADC found out when it spoke to Omar Nissar Paul, a Kashmiri who has vivid memories of how Eid used to be celebrated in Kashmir when he lived there with his family. Today, he says, he is pained at the plight of the state and its people. Omar was born in Budgam district in Kashmir and spent 22 years of his life there before the need for education brought him to Mumbai, and then work held him back here. “Kashmir used to be nothing short of a spectacle during Eid,” said this 27-year-old aspiring ad-film making. “But today,” he said, “it is so different. It is heartbreaking to see that once upon a time, the places Omar Nissar Paul that used to be alive with festivities and celebrations during Eid, are de- bout of fury on this state.” void of any celebration owing to the Speaking to the ADC from Kashravaging effects of nature's recent mir, Omar said, “I did my HSc in
Kashmir and then came to Mumbai for further studies. Having spent my childhood and some of my teenage years here, I clearly remember those fun times during Eid. The celebrations used to begin well before Eid. The shopping and the cleaning used to get families together. Goats used to be bought not based on their weight but on how they looked. My grandfather used to go to this huge market where goats used to be sold. While one of my uncles would accompany him, we as children would be excited and anxious to know who among us would be be the lucky one to accompany grandfather to the market. Whenever I got the chance, I would observe everything happening on my way to the market. By the time we got home I would be bubbling with excitement to share stories of the trip with my family. Eid was such an extravanganza.” Omar, with a tinge of sadness in
his voice, continued, “But now, things are so different. Srinagar, the lifeline of the state, is shut. In Budgam there is darkness. There are no people. There are no celebrations. Shops that used to be lit with lights and bustling with people, are closed. There is no clear place to keep your foot. Everywhere there are lumps of garbage, spoilt materials. Where there used to be people, there are cars. Damaged cars that have been brought from the flood affected areas. My heart cries out at this sight. Even those few parts at Budgam that were not affected by the floods have exercised restraint in celebrating Eid as a gesture of solidarity towards the people who have lost kith and kin in the floods. It is a sad scene here. It is difficult. I don't recognise this place now.” Omar is currently in Kashmir helping families affected by the flood. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in
Flipkart’s Big Billion Day or Big Con Day? Site kept crashing, orders were disappearing, offers went missing and products were going out of stock By Santia Dudi

ndia's one of the most famous online shopping website was making rounds on social media and news media throughout yesterday because of its Big Billion Day sale. The online shopping portal Flipkart was also advertising for the Big Billion Day since the past two weeks. The sale which started at 8 am yesterday left many customers disappointed and some also felt cheated. A journalist who ordered a 32inch LG LED TV worth Rs 26,900 (Rs 18,450 after discount) initially received a confirmation mail for the order. Later she was informed that the delivery time of her order has been changed. After some time an-

Parties launch mobile apps These mobile applications will give voters information about their constituency, candidates etc By Yatin Ingle

Sorry, may I know your name? It’s too difficult to recognize you following your mud-slinging poll campaign.
ADC, “This seems like a con. First they announced the sale. They accepted the cash for the order. Later they cancelled the order saying it was out of stock. Now they will return the money only after a week. What are they going to do with the money? Make interest with this for one week and return the capital money after a week.”
fter revamping their websites, political parties have now launched mobile applications for the voters to know about their wards, constituencies, candidates and also the upcoming rallies of the leaders. The Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress, BJP and the MNS have all launched these mobile applications. These applications comprise detailed profiling of the candidates, their works, constituency and also the future plans of the leader in his constituency. There are also options for the nearest polling booths which will be finalised soon. Another important option is that of the voting ID number where a voter can identify the availability of his/her voting card. Shreyas Sawant from Kurla says, “These applications give us the information about our candidates and
then we can decide whom to vote for. It also gives the detailed location of the constituencies and the likely polling booths for each ward where we have to go for voting. On the other hand, these applications are free of cost and help us to understand the LS elections easily.” During the Lok Sabha elections, the election commission had launched a mobile android application for the voters. That applicationgave the users information about their voting ID numbers, and voter registrations. The ADC spoke to Sudhakar Tamboli, MNVS, who said, “The profiles of the politicians also enable the voters to know their correct choice with the details and future aspects of the contestant. Applications work as an mediator between the political parties and the voters just with a click on the mobile screen.”

Google creates doodle
03 Azad Shrivastav | ADC
Google on Monday created an interactive doodle to commemorate the birthday of the late legendary Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl. The internet giant has created one of its iconic illustrations to pay tribute to the man who recreated a Peruvian raft. Known for leading the Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947, Thor Heyerdahl was born on 6 October 1914. The Kon Tiki expedition was inspired by old reports and drawings made by
the Spanish Conquistadors of Inca rafts and by native legends and archaeological evidence suggesting contact between South America and Polynesia. Google created one of its iconic illustrations to pay tribute to the man who recreated a Peruvian raft, made of balsa wood and other native materials. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between separate cultures. In May 2011, the Thor Heyerdahl Archives were added to Unesco's "Memory of the World" Register. Heyerdahl's book about the expedition, The Kon-Tiki Expedition: By Raft Across the South Seas, has been translated into 70 languages. He passed away in Colla Micheri, Italy at the age of 87 on the 18th of April 2002.
The Haj selfie
The electronic self portrait – popularly known as the 'selfie' – has whizzed its way to Mecca and Medina where nearly 2 million Muslims were present on the Haj pilgrimage which ended yesterday. Where once cameras and camera phones were disallowed by the authorities, the ban was dropped due to a demand from pilgrims around the world who demanded that they make their selfies in front of the sacred Kaaba.
There were many scenes like this all over the city yesterday on the occasion of Bakra-Eid.
The journey to Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam, a journey every Muslim is bound to make at least once in his/ her lifetime if he/ she is physically and financially able to do so. It is a most sacred and exhaustive journey taken as an act of devotion and faith by the people belonging to Islam. However, like most profound journeys in this social media age, where people actually believe that a trip has not been made unless the proof is available in the form of the selfie, with the most defining aspect of the trip in the background, even the Haj pilgrimage has fallen prey to this trend. Though it has gone viral among the tech savvy young ones of the community, the older members are not at all pleased. Is nothing sacred any more? Even President Obama and PM
One of the Haj selfies that went viral on the Internet.
Cameron, leaders of the Western world, made that infamous selfie at Nelson Mandela's funeral. Do we not believe in sacred experiences of the heart and mind that do not need to be shared as narcissistic evidence with our “friends” on the Internet? Aren't we more than our pictures any more?
When Flipkart went flop
For the last so many days, ad after ad from Flipkart announced the ‘Big Billion Day’ splashed on our computer screens, getting us ready for October 6, which could just become India’s very own Black Friday (actually Tuesday) of online shopping. What Flipkart thought would be its biggest shopping day of the year, turned out to be a PR nightmare. It’s likely that company’s authoritative figures are getting ready to suspend its marketing team. How could one company get it so wrong? This Diarist tirelessly browsed the internet to find out. Since the dawn of the day Flipkart has been receiving flak from users and mainstream media. Some analysers alleged that the company followed the age old marketing trick of raising prices just before the big sale, so it could drop prices just in time. But with the Internet’s record keeping ability and price assessment tools, Flipkart’s trick was exposed by many critiques. But not before the website’s server first crashed. The Indian public woke up and before they could even sit down to breakfast, turned on their computers to check out Flipkart’s deals. So their campaign worked, but the company
did not deliver. Before we were promised the Big Billion Day, we were promised Achhe Din. Turns out all the
promises of bright and rich days to the general Indian public are not anything we should lay our hopes on.
Gender inclusion in television
An Indian television news station has recruited the country’s first transgender news anchor, five months after a court ruled that transgender people be recognised as a legal third gender. Padmini Prakash, 31, who works at Lotus News in Tamil Nadu said she had faced a lot of discrimination throughout her life, including being disowned by her family. She worked as a dancer and then acted in Tamil soap operas before joining the news channel.Prakash said it was daunting to take such a high profile role. Campaigners say there are hundreds of thousands of transgender people in India but because they were not legally recognised, they have been ostracised, faced discrimination, abuse and often forced into prostitution. Prakash became so popular with viewers after joining the station about a month ago that

she was quickly promoted to become the face of the Coimbatore-based Lotus News Channel s daily 7 pm special bulletin. It’s nice to hear these rare stories of gender inclusion in our very close-minded society.

EC issues show cause notice to Gadkari 8
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2014
Afternoon Despatch & Courier
By Prashant Hamine
S
enior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari yesterday courted trouble as Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a show cause notice to him for his controversial remarks made at his election rally on October 5 in Nilanga Assembly constituency in Latur district about voters being bribed in the next 10 days. Mantralaya and State Legis-
lature Reporters Association yesterday also condemned another of Gadkari's remarks made at a rally in Sindhudurg district where he allegedly stated that even journalists worked for “financial packages”. The ECI has directed Gadkari to respond to its notice by 5 pm on October 8 or face further action. The ECI in its two-page notice to Gadkari has quoted from his Nilanga rally pointing out that he had made statements to the effect of inducing by someone, and then decide voters to take bribes if offered how to vote. Gadkari in his
speech at the rally had remarked “Now, I am watching your faces and I have some skill of predicting the future by way of face reading. You have an opportunity of 'Laxmi Darshan' (money) in the next 10 days. Special people to get foreign-made, ordinary people to get local brand. Am I right? Sisters, elderly sisters... Sarees for old women, pant-shirt for a young boy and all are “Gandhivadis” asking for Rs 5,000. In these days of inflation, keep one thing in mind, eat what you wish and drink what you
desire. Keep whatever you get. This is the time when illegally earned money can go to poor. Therefore, do not say no to Laxmi. But think while you vote. Your vote should be for the development of Maharashtra.” The ECI has drawn its attention to sub-para 4 of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) which provides that parties and candidates shall avoid scrupulously all activities which are 'corrupt practices' and offences under the election law, such as bribing of
voters. The notice states that Gadkari's aforesaid statement amounts to abetting and promoting the electoral offence of bribery within the meaning of section 171B read with section 171E of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which includes offering food, drink or entertainment.
Nirmala Sitharaman: Is Oppn running scared of Modi? Says, baseless misinformation is being spread about the Prime Minister and the BJP By Prashant Hamine
R
esponding to the criticism being heaped on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman yesterday wanted to know whether the opposition was scared of the development agenda pursued by the Prime Minister. Speaking to media persons here at the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters, she clarified that the Centre has not shifted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offices or any central government offices out of Mumbai. She contended that since the BJP was in a position to form the next government on its own the opposition was indulging in spreading baseless misinformation and targeting Modi and BJP. Replying to queries over comparisons between devel-
Nirmala Sitharaman opment works in Maharashtra and Gujarat, she argued that the pace of development in Maharashtra, in the last 15 years of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) rule, was distinctively slow. Sitharaman added that raising issues of farmers' suicides, irrigation scam and other scams of the CongressNCP government was not an attempt to lower the prestige of the state. Former leader of opposition in legislative assembly Eknath Khadse added that during the reign of
Sharad Pawar as the Union agriculture minister, the agriculture growth was negative and that the state had witnessed maximum number of suicides by farmers. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray continued to target the BJP likening them to the army of Moghul king Afzal Khan. Reacting to state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis' comment on celebrating Shiv Jayanti by collecting coerced donations, the Sena president remarked that the BJP was party to it along with the Sena over the last 25 years. Reacting to the Sena barbs, state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari disclosed that Fadnavis' remark was aimed at the NCP, however the Sena president misread it and took it upon himself. The BJP however declined to comment on the Sena analogy of Afzal Khan army to the BJP.
Inflation will ease further in Modi rule: Shah B
JP President Amit Shah on Monday said that prices have come down since Narendra Modi came to power at the Centre and that the downward trend could continue further in the current month. "Prices of essential commodities as well as that of petrol and diesel are falling since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister and the downward trend could continue further in the month of October," he said addressing an election meeting at Lonavala, says a PTI report. ship and urged people to vote the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in Maharashtra in the October 15 assembly polls to ensure proper development of the state. "Maharashtra should have a government that will work shoulder to shoulder with Narendra Modi at the Centre to take the state ahead on the path of development," Shah added. The BJP president also attacked Congress-NCP alliance alleging that people of the state were condemned to a 15-year-old "corrupt rule" that took Maharashtra backward.

SS-BJP, Cong-NCP splits were pre-planned: Raj
Says, all four parties are just taking voters in the state for a ride about contesting polls separately

A
fter targeting the BJP for revealing their plan to make Maharashtra like Gujarat, Raj Thackeray has now stated that the splits in the Shiv Sena–Bharatiya Janata Party and National Congress Party–Congress alliances were pre-planned. Addressing a rally at Dombivali, Thackeray said, “The split between the alliances was pre-planned and later these four political parties – SS, BJP, NCP and Congress – announced their candidates for the polls within just two days. How is it possible for these parties to decide their candidates in just a matter of two days? This is a pre-
planned game played by these parties and they are fooling everyone that the break-ups happened during the election phase!”. Thackeray further stated that the BJP has picked up most of its candidates from the NCP and has given them
tickets for the state elections. Thackeray added, “This BJP has taken maximum of its candidates from the NCP; if at all the BJP is going for an alliance with Sharad Pawar and his NCP, do not get astonished or amused, its only because of a plan which had been already devised by the parties”. Picking on the Shiv Sena yet again, the MNS chief said: “The Shiv Sena is supposed to have broken its alliance with the BJP, then why has it not done so in the BMC and the Central government? If they have really broken the alliance then they should break up totally and not just for namesake.”

Seller of killer drug arrested Cops seize 52 gms of the poisonous drug MD worth Rs 2.60 lakh from accused By Neel Shah

umbai police on Monday arrested a notorious drug peddler for selling dangerous drug known as MD in the areas of South Mumbai. The accused, identified as Abdul Rehman Abdul Wahid Siddique alias Kashmiri, was arrested from Dongri in south Mumbai, said police. Police recovered 52 grams of MD drug worth Rs 2.60 lakh from the accused, who is a resident of Dongri. “Kashmiri is an history sheeter and has been arrested in the past for peddling drugs,” said Sunil Kawlekar, senior inspector of Pydhonie police station. According to the police, 42-year-
old Kashmiri is not associated with any gang or cartel of drug peddlers, as he himself manufactures cheap quality drugs. “This drug he makes by mixing several low quality drugs and sells the same to the roadside beggars and in the seedy slums of South Mumbai,” asserted Kawlekar. The combination of a couple of cheap quality drugs makes the final drug more deadly and poisonous and the death of the consumer of this drug inevitably occurs within six months or a year, said police. “Considering this, police has charged Kashmiri under section 328 of IPC,” informed Krishna Prakash, Addl. CP (South Region). Meanwhile, Kashmiri has been arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) as well as section 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) of IPC. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

A
day after the ADC reported about Social activist Priya Rathod's Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project, the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) has clarified that Rathod represents a small percentage of tenants, against the 80 per cent who are happy that their lives are going to change for the better. The Trust said in a statement: “SBUT is extremely committed and sensitive to all its tenants. The Trust provides the best transit facilities and is ensuring utmost care is taken during the rehabilitation and subsequent construction phase to all the residential and commercial tenants. SBUT has prepared agreements where shops and residents' homes will be given to the people in almost the same place where they are presently located. “SBUT has hired the best sociol-
ogists, urban planners and similar experts to achieve a master design that would ensure that the religious, cultural, social spirit and the character of the area would be preserved. Most buildings are dilapidated, some are even declared unfit for living by MHADA. A project as big as this size and so many people involved there will always be a small percent who will make unreasonable demands and will try to cause problems,” the Trust said in a statement. It further added, “Current conditions of close-built structures, narrow lanes, congested roads, no green cover, haphazard garbage disposal, old and dilapidated buildings, unhygienic living conditions, inadequate sewage, waste disposal services and failing infrastructure. As a part of the project, the 250 old and dilapidated buildings will be razed, to transform this 100-year-old crippling infrastructure of Bhendi Bazaar into a healthy and well-planned neighbourhood.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

wo passengers and the driver of an auto-rickshaw had a miraculous escape when the vehicle caught fire on the busy MiraBhayandar road near Golden Nest in Mira Road on Monday evening. According to the police, the mishap was reported at about 5 pm when the CNG-fuelled rickshaw (bearing registration number

The auto-driver who has been identified as Yadav apparently smelled something burning at the rear end of his auto and immediately applied brakes and evacuated the auto. While the passengers alighted and rushed to safety, Yadav in a desperate attempt to restrain the fire, tried to shut the regulator,
but the huge flames started leaping out, prompting him to jump out of his auto. “The driver has sustained minor burn injuries on his hands. A complaint has been registered in this context at the Navghar police station,” confirmed Police Inspector (Traffic) Chandrakant Gundge. CNG and auto experts will carry out an inspection to know the exact cause of the fire, police said.

Pawar attacks Modi after diatribe N
CP president Sharad Pawar on Monday came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after the latter targeted him during poll rallies in Maharashtra. "Somebody please tell him about my election record. I have fought 14 elections so far. Will I shirk from polls," Pawar said, addressing a poll rally at Ahmedpur in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Modi had on Sunday said that Pawar chose the Rajya Sabha route and did not contest Lok Sabha polls as he was aware that the "ship (UPA government) was sinking." "I am lucky that the country's Prime Minister does not see any leader other than me," Pawar quipped, referring to Modi's diatribe against him during three
public meetings in the state yesterday. "What does Modi say in these rallies? I can understand if he says something of national interest. One can also understand if he speaks about changing the life of the common man. But if you take his speech into consideration, the maximum attack is on Sharad Pawar," the NCP chief said. Modi had launched a sharp attack on Pawar and asked voters to banish the "corrupt NCP and Congress" in the polls, reports PTI. In his attack on Pawar at the rallies in Tasgaon, Kolhapur and Gondia, Modi said the NCP leader cannot imbibe any of the qualities of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji.

New power scenario in Pakistan? T
HERE are serious cases against him. He was in exile for a long while. And when he came back to Pakistan — at the time the last national elections were held, he was arrested. And suddenly Pervez Musharraf appeared on national television a couple of days ago, looking as if he was once again in command of the army. And he was shown by the TV channels saying aggressively: "Kashmir belongs to Pakistan". It looks like changes are fast taking place in Pakistan. There were strong public protests by two leaders — Imran Khan and cleric Qadri — followers of these two leaders took out a morcha to Islamabad and then dared to open the gates of Parliament and move in. The army played a silent part in the episode. That the two leaders were not arrested showed that the army was involved. The protest however fizzled out and Nawaz Sharif remains the president. The army had, during the protest, demanded more 'space' for itself and must have got it from Nawaz Sharif. The pertinent question is who got Musharraf free? Was Nawaz Sharif made to drop charges against him? Will Musharraf play a bigger role in the ruling scenario in Pakistan? Will he get rid of Nawaz once again and come to power? It all adds up: Unprecedented developments have been taking place on the border. Maybe they have connection with the latest power scenario in the country.

P
RIME Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US was, in more ways than one, a success. He may not have brought with him anything tangible from America but has created a climate of confidence and won back Washington which always looked at India with suspicion. Here is a person, who was denied a US visa, who was able to shame the US Administration with speeches of friendship with America. Modi was able to formulate a joint statement with President Barack Obama that goes farther than what his predecessors were able to achieve. For the first time, an Indian Prime Minister wrote a joint edit with the US President in an American newspaper. This is a healthy practice which the Indian media should follow. However, in the process, Modi has buried Jawaharlal Nehru’s idea of non-alignment deep. True, the movement has lost its raison d’être, following the confrontation between the Communists and the Democratic bloc. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, the Communists lost the 'cold war'. Still the movement had come to represent an idea that small nations should not fear the big ones because of their size or power. In comparison, the number of states comprising the third world countries was far more than those either in the American bloc or the Soviet.
Economic betterment Modi is a product of the capitalist world. He has neither the pull of the Nehru era of socialism, nor that of Mahatma Gandhi’s selfsufficiency. Modi wants the country to develop, whatever be the means and how big the economy may create a distance between the haves and the have-nots. I, belonging to an era where the Independence meant economic betterment of the lower half, do not understand or appreciate how a country which is poor can develop or give justice to the have-nots without moving towards the left. I believe that the Socialistic pattern of society which we chose was the right path and we should go back to it. But Modi’s good-worded speeches, which meant everything to everybody, may be pleasing to the ear. He is, indeed, a forceful speaker. But what do we do on the ground is important. Take for example, the Planning Commission. That it had become a parallel govern-

ment is true. But we should have removed the bureaucratic conflicts. The planning for a country like ours has to be there to marshal the resources and distribute them equitably among the states. The Planning Commission needed to be put back on track, not to pushed aside, as Modi has done. It is a pity that the left in the country has not grown in influence. But this is because the Communists do not understand the Indians. Marx is important. So is Gandhi. Yet, in the Communists’ politburo, you can see the photos of Marx and Engels, not that of Gandhi or Nehru who represented our Independence struggle and sacrifices. Modi could have utilized the Planning Commission for the capitalist system which he preaches and follows. But its abolition does not make sense.
across the border that we overacted when we cancelled the talks with Pakistan after its High Commissioner in India invited the Hurriyat leaders. Such talks have been held before even when the Hurriyat spoke about separatism. But Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj gave a clear and categorical reply that the foreign secretary-level talks have been suspended. She also explained that the government had changed and its policy was different. I want to recall some instances of the past for Modi and Sushma Swaraj so that some continuity is visible in the policy followed then and now. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif summed up his talks with the late Inder Kumar Gujral years ago at Male. “Aap Kashmir de nahi sakte, aur hum aap se le nahi sakte” (you cannot hand over Kashmir to us and we are in no position to take it from you). Not only that, Nawaz Sharif confronted the army and entered into a time bound agreement with India to sort out the issue of Kashmir. It’s another matter that the army dismissed him and took over the reins of the country. He had to undergo imprisonment of several months.
BETWEEN THE LINES
Why should the same Nawaz Sharif devote 19 sentences to Kashmir, the largest reference any Pakistan leader has made at the UN? Apparently, he has developed a vested interest in the Prime Minister’s chair that he occupies. The armed forces, inherent by anti-India sentiment, do not want a settlement with New Delhi because the dispute is the raison d’être of its power in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif, elected with the support of the military and the rightists remained tethered to secularism. He wanted to prove that Islam was not opposed to democracy or secularism which was equivalent to pluralism. Why has he changed? Or why he begs seeing which side his bread is buttered. He never compromised. I personally think the wilderness has taught him a lesson. In the US, Modi was able to create an environment where the BJP has begun to count. His priority for the SAARC countries has also delineated the agenda for the government. It’s good that he has dropped hostility towards Pakistan. Now, it is time for the two countries to pick up the threads from where Manmohan Singh had left off.
Kuldip Nayar Many in the country praise Modi for not mentioning Kashmir when Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had devoted 19 sentences, to quote a Pakistani, to Kashmir, never done before. Modi did not even mention Kashmir in his speech. This has gone down well in the country. But by ignoring a problem, it does not disappear. India has to discuss the problem peacefully, across the table, sooner or later because Pakistan, besieged by several difficulties, finds support in the country. The Hurriyat, which seeks to represent Kashmir, is acquiring fundamentalism and losing its appeal in India as well as among the democratic countries in the West. The Hurriyat would have earned laurels if it had turned out Syed Ali Shah Geelani when he changed his pluralistic line and talked in parochial terms. I agree with the reaction coming from
Nawaz Sharif ’s dilemma
For a Sufi mystic ‘everything’ means ‘nothing’! M
YSTICISM is the essence and the basis of all knowledge, science, art, philosophy, religion and literature. These all come under the heading of mysticism. When one traces the origin of medicine, which has developed into the pure science it is today, one will find that its source was in intuition. It is the mystics who have given it to the world. For instance, Avicenna, the great Persian mystic, has contributed more to medicine than any other man in the world history of medicine. We know the meaning of science to be a clear knowledge based on reason and logic; but at the same time, where did it start? Was it by reason and logic? First, there was intuition, then came reason, and finally, logic was applied to it. Furthermore, in the lower creation there are no doctors, yet the creatures are their own physicians. The animals know whether they will best be cured by standing in the sun, by bathing in a pool of water, by running in the free air, or by sitting quietly under the shade of a tree. I once knew a sensible dog who used to fast every Thursday. No doubt many people of the east would say he was an incarnation of a Brahmin; but to me, it was a puzzle how the dog
knew it was Thursday! People think a mystic means a dreamer, an impractical person who has no knowledge of worldly affairs. But such a mystic I would call only half a mystic. A mystic, in the full sense of the word, must have balance. He must be as wise in worldly matters as in spiritual things. People have had many misconceptions of what a mystic is. They have
MATTER & SPIRIT called a fortune-teller a mystic, or a medium, a clairvoyant, a visionary. I do not mean that a mystic does not possess all of these qualities, but these qualities do not make a mystic. A real mystic should prove to be an inspired artist, a wonderful scientist, an influential statesman. He should be just as qualified for business, industry, social and political life as is the materially minded man. When people say to me, 'You are a mystic, I thought you would take no notice of this or that,' I do not like it. Why should I not take notice of it? I take notice of every little detail, although every little detail does not occupy my mind so much that I take notice of noth-
ing else. It is not necessary to be unconscious of the world while being conscious of God. With our two eyes we see one vision; so we should see both aspects, God and the world, as a clear vision at the same time. It is difficult, but not impossible. Mysticism is an outlook on life. Things which seem real to the average person are unreal in the eyes of the mystic. Things that seem unreal in the eyes of the average person are real in the eyes of the mystic. For the mystic, God is the source and goal of all, God is all and all is God. However, a real mystic does not say, as an intellectual student of philosophy does, 'I do not believe in God, although I believe in the abstract.' Such a man is unpoetic and without an ideal. He may have got hold of some truth, but it is a flower without fragrance. One cannot worship the abstract; no one can communicate with the abstract, give anything to it, or take anything from it. To worship in that way is meaningless. We must have something before us to love, to worship, to adhere to, to look up to, to raise high. It is true if we say, 'God is everything and all;' yet, at the same time, from another point of view, 'everything' means 'nothing.' — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Some arm-twisting needed THE Sarita Devi incident shows how weak-kneed our officialdom is vis-avis our nation. Would the judges have dared to do this if the competitor was Chinese? The Chinese would have walked out of the games if necessary. That’s because they are a sports super power. Even a nation like South Korea can bully us and get away with it. That’s because each Indian is interested in his individual future rather than what is good for the team and the country. Even now it is not too late to re-ignite the matter and have the full force of the country behind Sarita Devi. After all aren’t we one of the biggest markets for Samsung, LG, Hyundai etc? Let us also twist some arms. — T R Ramaswami, Kandivali
THE recent Sarita Devi case at the Asiad Games in Incheon, South Korea was a travesty of fair play and a blot on the competency of the judges. It was a clear instance of partisanship on the part of judges in depriving a certain winner Sarita Devi in the boxing bout. It was her sheer desperation and frustration that prompted her to refuse the bronze medal. This led to questions of her behaviour and lack of sportsmanship. The International Amateur Boxing body declared that an inquiry will be held into her behaviour and if found guilty she will be banned. But why is nobody questioning the incompetency or bias of the judges. In

I request marathon enthusiasts to undergo vital tests before they run these events to avoid mishaps. Panvel-Karjat train services PANVEL-Karjat section has grown tremendously over the last few years due to the MIDC development area like Rasayani Patalganga. The proposed Central Railway service between Panvel-Karjat is much awaited. The suburban railway network joins Panvel-Karjat with CST via Diva station. Now, railway authorities should take initiative to start local trains on the Panvel-Karjat route immediately which will help commuters as well as local villagers. The local train service between CST and Karjat via Diva and Panvel will reduce the travel time and also tourists can use this section when heading for Matheran Hill station. DD misused The live telecast of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat's speech at Dussehra rally in Nagpur by the Dooradarshan to propaganda for Hindu Rashtra is the most dangerous tradition and total misuse of the state broadcaster by the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Since the RSS is the most communal organisation and wants to divide the people of the country on the basis of caste and religion, they should not have been allowed by the Dooradarshan to telecast their live speech. I strongly feel that the precedents of allowing communal organisations like RSS to address their views on Doordarshan exposed the dirty intentions of the BJP government and the RSS. It is high time that propaganda of communal agendas by the Dooradarshan must be banned or not allowed by the government to create an unhealthy and dangerous atmosphere. — Bhagwan Thadani, via email
Queue system at Thane WE are residents of Kolshet Road, Thane (W) and regularly travel in an auto-rickshaw whenever we visit Thane. We observe that many a times we stand in a queue for the auto for coming back to our place. There is always a huge queue of at least 200 to 300 people standing for autos. We spend almost 30 to 40 minutes to get an auto here. Many commuters who daily travel to office by train catch the auto from their residence and while they return they travel around 1 to 1.30 hours by train and again they have to stand in line for another 40 minutes to catch the auto to reach their destination. Overall, a man spends two hours while he returns home clubbing the train and auto travel time. It is my suggestion to the auto union and the respective authorities to take into consideration a system whereby every common man will benefit, that is introducing a separate line for each destination thus making it easy for travellers. The queue system should be introduced area-wise. — Murugesh Iyer, Thane
Major violation of ceasefire

On October 5, the Pakistani troops, in their major violation, didn’t hesitate to attack even the civilian areas of J&K, killing one innocent teenager girl and causing serious injuries to many innocent Indians. Why can’t India destroy all hideouts of terrorists, their arms, ammunition and all their camps in Pakistan as well as in PoK, if the US and its allies like Australia and UK can carry on air strikes and destroy the Islamic state’s terrorists and their hideouts etc? AMMU: In one of the worst ceasefire violations by Pakistan, five villagers were killed and 34 injured on Monday in heavy mortar shelling and firing from across the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Poonch sectors, triggering strong condemnation by India. Pakistani troops indulged in heavy and unprovoked firing and shelling of mortars on 10 border outposts (BoPs) and civilian areas along international border (IB) in Arnia belt of Jammu district from 10 p.m. on Sunday spilling over to Monday morning, a BSF spokesman said.
Lakhs of Muslims thronged mosques and Eidgahs yesterday to offer prayers as mass animal sacrifices, piety and spirit of brotherhood marked Eid-ul-Zuha which was celebrated across the country with traditional fervour. The celebrations were, however, a low-key affair in Jammu and Kashmir which is recovering from the losses of last month's devastating floods, with people observing austerity and many locals deciding to refrain from loud festivities.
PM Narendra Modi yesterday appreciated Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar for participating in 'Swachh Bharat' campaign and said the mission can be made successful by working together. "Together we will make Swachh Bharat Mission a success," he said.

"They (the Pakistani leadership) have nothing else to speak, but only Kashmir. Whenever they go abroad, they try to raise only Kashmir issue, but every time they miserably fail to get international attention. The cross-border shelling is an indica-

Apply a few drops of wine (red of course) on your cheeks to get a natural blush. You may be visited by a few happy fruit flies though, so beware. impROve yOuR haiR qualiTy For thick, silky hair, use a hair mask that has been prepared with wine. It will make your hair extremely shiny and also improve its quality in the long run. n Do it at home: You don’t need to invest in expensive products, or even spend too much time on this beauty fix. All you need to do is use wine to rinse your hair out after you’ve shampooed and conditioned it. It might be expensive, but it works.
>> From using it as a marinade to preparing sauces, you can use wine in a variety of ways when you’re cooking
RemOve WRinkles If you buy organic red wine, you can be assured that it is full of antioxidants such as flavanoid. It also contains resveratrol and tannin, both of which help fight free radicals and prevent ageing. This means that wine can boost sagging skin and prevent wrinkles. It also helps lighten pigmentation. n Do it at home: All you have to do to reduce fine lines and wrinkles is apply red wine topically on your skin. Use organic wine, and do this once or twice a week.
Why is iT sO healThy? We know that wholegrain bread is healthy because it is rich in fibre and yoghurt is healthy because of its probiotic content, but have you ever wondered why red wine is so good for your health? Nutritionist Tripti Gupta explains that wine is healthy because of the various phenol and polyphenol compounds that it contains. The polyphenols present in red wine are basically antioxidants that have been shown to help protect the lining of your heart’s blood vessels and so, they can lower your risk of suffering from heart disease. Of all the compounds, researchers believe that resveratrol — a type of polyphenol that is present in red wine — is key to lending wine its health benefits. Resveratrol is a comp ound that helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol and also prevents your blood from clotting. All these properties help your heart, as damaged blood vessels and high LDL cholesterol have been known to lead to heart conditions. However, it must be noted that resveratrol comes from the skin of grapes — from which wine is made — and so, even eating grapes or drinking fresh grape juice can help provide similar benefits. Red wine is said to be better than white wine because it is fermented with grape skins for a longer time than its counterpart, and so, has a higher resveratrol content than white wine. There is also a new study that found that wine might be able to provide health benefits similar to those provided by diary products. The study, conducted in Spain, found the presence o f probiotics — especially a bacteria called Lactobacillus — which is usually found in dairy products such as yoghurt. The benefits of this bacteria range from healthy bowel function to possible, anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties.
ReD OR WhiTe? Wondering what type of wine to pick for your beauty routine? While red wine is the most commonly used type of wine when it comes to beauty benefits, you shouldn’t forget about the white! Pick it according to your skin type. White wine contains mostly the same qualities, so its benefits are the same, just in smaller quantities. So, for very sensitive or very fair skin, white wine is a better option than red. It also depends on what benefits you want to focus on. Use red wine for its antiageing properties and use white if you want to prevent acne. Both will tone your skin, but if you’ve got dry skin you should use white wine, while oilier skin types will benefit more from red.
beauTy benefiTs pResenT in Wine Wine contains AHAs, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help fight acne and make your pores look smaller, as well as treat oily and congested skin. It is very rich in amino acids and can prevent sun damage and skin cancer. It also hydrates your skin, keeping it nourished and moisturised. The resveratrol content in the wine helps hair growth, prevents hair fall, reduces flakiness, dandruff and itchiness and also nourishes your scalp.
eaT yOuR Wine Drinking is not the only way to consume wine. Read on as we tell you about different ways you can include wine in your diet. n Wine ice cubes: No, this is not a party trick. This is actually a way to preserve wine (to add flavour to your recipes) without having to store and maintain wine bottles. Simply pour wine in an ice cube tray and freeze it. The next time you want to add some extra flavour to your soup or sauce, all you have to do is pop in two or three wine cubes. n marinade: Wine is a popular meat marinade — it makes your meat more flavourful and studies have shown that using a wine marinade can help reduce the cancer-causing compounds that are present in meat. To ensure that you get these anti-carcinogenic properties, you’ll need to marinate your meat for at least six hours. In case you’re wondering how to marinate the meat, try this simple recipe – one cup of red wine with a cup of oil and some seasoning. n sauté: This is an uncommon, but excellent way to add flavour to your vegetables. While sautéing your vegetables, use less oil and butter and adjust the proportions with some wine instead. Your vegetables will be crispier, juicier and more flavourful. n Reduction: This is a classic way to make sauces that taste great with shallow-fried meat. All you have to do is add a cup or two of wine (depending on the quantity of the sauce) just before you set it to simmer. Let the sauce simmer for a good 15-20 minutes to let the alcohol evaporate and allow the wine to work its magic.
The limiT We keep hearing about how the benefits of wine are only applicable when it is consumed in a moderate amount. Are you confused what the moderate amount translates to in real life? Tripti has the answer. She tells us, “When we suggest moderate consumption of wine, we are referring to approximately 150ml of wine. And since an average wine glass measures 200ml, a healthy serving of wine is ideally ¹/³ of a wine glass for up to three times a week.”

unusual uses n Dye something: Did you know that you can use wine to colour things? This wouldn’t be a very useful trick to use white wine with, but red wine can be used to dye a variety of fabric. You won’t always get the same shade, but it will lend an interesting colour to your fabrics if you heat it and let fabric sit in it for a while. n Disinfect your kitchen: Got a stain on your kitchen counter? Wine can come to the rescue! The alcohol content in wine
n
n
can disinfect your kitchen while removing stains at the same time. But, be careful around chairs and sofas, because as we’ve already told you, wine stains make a pretty permanent dye there! Get your fruits clean: Wine may be very good for your skin, hair and health, but it’s also really good for the fruits and vegetables that you consume. And, don’t worry, you won’t be drinking it in them. Because of the alcohol content of the wine, impurities on the surface of your fruits are killed, making fruits and vegetables safer to eat after they’re soaked in them. Drink it clean: Alright, maybe not as literally. You will still have to clean your wine glasses after you’ve enjoyed a few drinks in them, but wine is also a really great way to clean a dirty, spotted glass. You can even clean your windows and mirrors with it — but remember only to use slightly spoiled, white wine. Trap the flies: Have you noticed how fruit flies always seem to find their way to the rim of your wine glass? Use this against them by keeping a glass of wine on the counter, wrapped in plastic. Poke some small holes in the plastic so that the flies fall into the wine and get stuck — trapping them and getting rid of your fruit fly problem. say goodbye to grease: White wine can help you clean grease stains from around your house, again, because of its alcohol content. mop up the spill: This one is really surprising. If you spill red wine anywhere, flood the stain with white wine and quickly mop it up. One wine absorbs the other, helping you avoid a nasty mess. Sounds like a good reason to keep white wine around now, doesn’t it?!

Two new studies, aimed at understanding the importance of eating breakfast and whether it is actually necessary to lose weight, have found no relation between eating breakfast and weight loss. Dev Goswami finds out more
W
e know that we’ve told you over and over again how important it is to eat breakfast if you want to stay healthy and lose weight, but there’s now a study that seems to be dispelling all those ideas. Look for instructions about losing weight or eating healthy, and a healthy breakfast is bound to be one of the top tips. But, if the following studies are anything to go by, eating breakfast might be over-hyped. Both studies were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and both of them were targeted at answering one simple question — does eating breakfast guarantee weight loss? The answer to the question, the studies found, was no. While the first study was conducted among 33 lean adults for six weeks, the second one was a much more comprehensive one, studying around 300 overweight people. The 300 people were divided into three groups — the first group wasn’t allowed to eat breakfast, the second group had to eat breakfast, while the third formed the control group, eating a standard, healthy diet.
>> While a delicious breakfast will certainly wake you up, it won’t help you lose weight
The study found that after 16 weeks of following this routine, the groups displayed absolutely no difference in weight. David Allison, one of the researchers of the study, was quoted as saying, “Our simple question was (when it comes to weight loss), does it help to eat breakfast? And the answer seems to be probably not.” However, he does emphasise on the fact that the study didn’t include specific foods and only studied obese subjects. This basically means that the effects of eating different kinds of food, as well as the benefits of eating breakfast among those who are underweight or the disadvantage of skipping it among those who maintain a balanced weight is not something that the study shed light on. So, should you stop making an effort to have a healthy breakfast every day? Not yet. The researchers admit that the results need more investigation and the idea itself needs more research. Also, as researchers said, the study only focussed on the connection between breakfast and weight loss and not on whether eating breakfast is healthy in general.

Not knowing where you are, forgetting small things for a few hours and walking into doors and walls are all common indicators of this condition. These episodes are more frequent when you are stressed and the condition is usually linked with other sleeping and mental disorders, so visit your doctor immediately, to help treat the condition. mosTly bs Congratulations! When you consider the fact that you spend close to eight hours every day at your office desk, it won’t be hard to appreciate how important it is that you maintain correct posture. Make sure that your desk, chair and monitor are aligned so that your head is in a straight line with your screen and your elbows can rest comfortably on your desk. Another important aspect when it comes to sitting in your chair is to make sure you have ample back support. The lower back of your chair (towards the seat) should have a protruding bump to support the small of your back. If your office doesn’t have such chairs, use a cushion to provide the support.

mosTly as You are stressed, overworked and even sit in an extremely unhealthy position! We are not going to comment about your overall lifestyle, but as far as the hours you spend at work are concerned — and they take up most of your day — you’re doing your body more harm than good. If all your answers were ‘a,’ you need to overhaul your work habits and change your schedule immediately, because you’re heading towards a nervous breakdown. Read our box below to find out about a few things that you need to be wary of when it comes to your work habits. mosTly bs You don’t need to worry about your work making you unhealthy, because as far as we can tell, your habits are good for your health. You aren’t too stressed, you make sure to take periodic breaks and sit in a healthy posture — all of which is extremely valuable to leading a healthy life. Continue working the way that you do and make sure not to pick up bad habits in the future.
So, you feel like you need to revamp the way you work? We’re sure you are aware of the more obvious steps such as drinking enough water and eating right — so we won’t harp on that. But, keep the following points in mind as well. cuT ouT The sTress
If you have answered ‘a’ to most of the questions in this quiz, you seem like a person who is always stressed out and on the verge of a breakdown. Being stressed doesn’t just affect your health — it also manifests in your work in the form of mistakes and fights with colleagues, which just stress you out further. So, take a vacation if you need to, or take an hour every day to indulge in your favourite hobby to ensure that you are free from stress.
break away
First of all, it is important to take a break every hour so that your body gets some physical activity and your eyes get some much needed rest. A break will also help you take your mind off work, which will help you focus better. Similarly, once you finish with work for the day, try to avoid thinking of or being surrounded by work. Don’t talk to your colleagues about work and try to see if you can talk to your boss before you leave for the day. Being surrounded by work 24x7 will also leave you with very little time for yourself — which can lead to depression and a lack of motivation.

« Know more: new-age desKs help your health
>> Keeping your back straight and your knees in line with your toes can help you get the best benefits out of your exercise routine, while keeping injuries at bay
Standing desks promise to help you get fitter and healthier while you work. Shirley Mistry tells you whether these new-age desks really help and whether you should buy into the fad
I
f you are among the millions and millions of people who sit in one position throughout the day, buried under a pile of desk work, you already know that your sedentary lifestyle isn’t good for you. Apart from slowing down your metabolism and piling on the kilos, it has now also been linked to a higher risk of cancer. This is where new-age desks, such as the standing desk, come into play. A standing desk is simply a tall table, at which you can stand and work, as opposed to sitting and slouching all day. Standing for longer durations of time is known to reduce your risk of heart, cancer, diabetes and of course, obesity. A host of studies that have been conducted over the past few years, suggest that standing at your desk reduces your risk of obesity significantly, as your metabolic rate never drops. Similarly, another study showed a direct link between standing for long durations of time and a marked improvement among those suffering from type-2 diabetes. Another study showed that those who sat for long durations of time (two hours or more), were at a 34% higher risk of suffering from a heart failure as compared to people who walk and stand for long durations of time. As far as cancer is concerned, a study has found, that those who sit the entire day, have a higher quantity of C-reactive protein and so, are at a higher risk of cancer, as opposed to people who stand. While standing is better than sitting, walking is definitely a step better than simply standing. This is where the hamster desk comes into play. A massive rotating wheel hosts a desk, replete with a computer. You can walk inside the wheel, while working. Obviously this desk helps you stay fit as you are constantly exercising and it is believed that even when it is set at a very slow speed, you end up walking around 1.5km to 2km every hour, all while performing standard desk-based tasks. Not only will you be fitter, people who have used a standing desk or a treadmill desk (a variation of the hamster desk) report that they feel fitter, more focused and productive all day long. >> A standing desk can help you prevent cancer and heart disease!
Form matters
W
hether you like working out at a gym or at home, one of the most common ways to go wrong with your exercises is with your form. Good posture will help you target specific muscles, get the most benefits from your workout and keep you safe from injuries. Before we delve into maintaining the perfect posture with various everyday exercises, we just have to tell you about this lovely tip that Shane D’souza, master trainer at Inch by Inch, Versova, gave us. He says, “Remember that an average person spends roughly seven hours a day sitting. This means that no amount of good posture while exercising will come to your rescue if you don’t sit in the correct posture.” Read on, as he tells us about how to achieve the perfect posture for a few common exercises.
Push-uPs With push-ups, it is imperative that you hold your body in a straight line. Shane recommends that you actively try to contract your trunk (torso) muscles, so that your neck, back and hips are in a straight line. Your hands should be slightly more than shoulder-width apart and you should lower yourself towards the floor till your elbows are bent at a 90° angle. While lowering or pushing up your body, make sure that torso doesn’t sag towards the floor and contract your muscles to keep your body straight.
barbell is on your shoulders and that your feet are shoulder-width apart with toes pointing straight. While lowering yourself, aim to bend your knees between a 45° and 90° angle. Make sure that your knees stay behind your toes and use your hips to raise your body back up.
Bench Press Shane tells us that most gym injuries happen while performing bench press because it is an exercise that is performed often. He also adds that using a thumbless grip (thumbs not holding the bar, and hovering in the air) is another reason you might end up injuring yourself. So, grip the bar with your fingers, as well as your thumb. Hold the bar with your hands placed slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and lower the bar until it is just above your chest. Shane recommends that you use a spotter (a trainer can function as a spotter) who can help ensure that you don’t go wrong with the grip or get stuck with the bar on your chest.
Lunges Shane tells us that a common mistake that you can make while with lunges is allowing your knees to lean over your toes. This puts a lot of pressure on your knees and can cause injuries. Apart from that, you can follow the same instructions that we gave you for squats, as the two exercises are similar.
crunches While performing crunches, you must curl up till your shoulders are a few inches from the floor. Remember to avoid letting your neck tuck into your chest — Shane recommends that you either imagine or place an actual tennis ball between your chin and your chest, which will help you avoid pressurising your neck. Another aspect that you must take care of, is holding your head steady and not letting it jerk. Finally, remember that your abs should be doing all the work. If you feel even a slight strain in your neck, you’re performing this exercise wrong.
Jogging
squats One common mistake you might be making while performing a squat is holding the barbell on your neck — this is quite dangerous and you could end up spraining your neck. Ensure that the

Jogging, running and walking are all great exercises, as they boost your stamina and cardiovascular health. However, if you don’t pay attention to your form, you won’t get the benefits associated with jogging. One of the easiest ways to achieve the best form is gaze straight ahead at the horizon, instead of the road or track. Your body will instinctively keep your neck and back straight — something that is important when it comes to jogging or walking. You should land somewhere between your heel and midfoot and not on your toes and remember to let your hands swing naturally to help preserve momentum.

Tricky Triclosan Triclosan, an ingredient that is widely used in several healthcare products, is actually quite harmful for you. Shirley Mistry & Yamini Walia tell you why
T
riclosan is an ingredient that is commonly found in everyday products such as toothpaste, deodorant and even handwash. It is an anti-bacterial agent, and toothpaste companies incorporate it into their product because it is believed to prevent gingivitis. It is also a mild antiinflammatory, which is also why it is used in toothpastes, as it can prevent swollen gums. Apart from these three major products, triclosan also finds its way into soaps, creams and other bath products. But, triclosan, which was once thought of as a seemingly harmless ingredient, is now coming into the spotlight for its harmful effects. Take a look at some of the most common concerns that have been raised regarding the use of triclosan.
hormone imBalanCe Studies have shown that when you use a product that contains triclosan, your skin absorbs 7-8% of it. Also, because it doesn’t break down easily, it remains in your body for long and its harmful effects last longer as well. A study conducted by Toxicological Sciences, found that triclosan mimics estrogen and so, can increase your risk of breast cancer. It was also found that triclosan
decreases the concentration of thyroid hormones in your body.
musCle funCtion A study conducted at the University of California Davis, found that triclosan can hamper your muscles from functioning properly. It also pointed out that the substance has the ability to increase your risk of suffering from cardiac disorders. As part of the study, fish and mice were exposed to the substance. After exposure to a single dose, it was noted that muscle functions of the mice were reduced by 25% and their grip strength by 18%. The fish were affected as well, as their swimming abilities became significantly poorer.
is it a pestiCide Yes, you read that right. When triclosan was initially discovered (in 1969), it was registered as a pesticide with the US Environment Protection Agency. Apart from being omnipresent in bath and body products, it is also used in making conveyor belts, fire hoses, adhesives, fabrics, plastics (toys, toothbrushes) and carpeting. An ingredient that is used to manufacture these products, certainly can’t be that safe to consume!
>> Sleep drunkenness can cause you to loose control over yourself
opt out While there is no ruling on whether riclosan can be included in bath and body products, you can still choose not to use products that contain it. Since around 150 different products contain triclosan, it may take you a while to find alternatives. However, if a product label boasts of it being anti-bacterial, chances are that it contains triclosan. While it will take you a few extra minutes to scan the ingredients list, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
expert speak While research, studies and a US agency suggests otherwise, our experts believe that triclosan is not that harmful. We spoke to two doctors and here’s what they had to say: “While studies and animal trials on rats/ mice have shown triclosan ingestion in large amounts to be harmful, we advise patients in our practice to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and rinse thoroughly after brushing to avoid ingestion. >> Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from all kinds of damage during weather change

BarBara, our Beauty expert, will help fix your proBlems
Dear Barbara, I have never had an acne problem (even when I was in my teens) and I’ve always been blessed with healthy, clear skin. However, I’m now in my late twenties and have suddenly noticed small bumps on my nose. They are not blackheads and are not painful or troublesome. However, they do look unsightly and I’m beginning to get quite bothered because no facewash or exfoliant is helping me get rid of them. Help! — saumya Kapur, mahim Dear saumya, You clearly don’t have blackheads. It looks like you’re suffering from white heads. You are lucky to have escaped pesky pimples when you were a teenager, but white heads are actually a type of acne! Simply put, they are just like blackheads, but the opening is so small, that the sebum they contain isn’t oxidised. But, it is simple to treat white heads. Apart from using a scrub once or twice a week, steaming the area will help enlarge the pores and clear white heads. If you feel that you can’t do this yourself, head to a salon and opt for a facial as it involves removing blackheads and white heads. Apart from keeping your skin clean, wear minimal makeup, as wearing too much makeup for prolonged periods of time can also clog your pores and cause white heads. >> To clear white heads, try wearing minimal makeup at all times
seasonal skincare Whether they’re seasonal or otherwise, sudden changes in the weather can make your skin either dry and itchy, or oily and acne prone. To prevent your skin from breaking out, Yamini Walia suggests you switch up your daily beauty regime
Dear Barbara, I have a lot of scars that were caused by the pimples I had when I was a teenager. I have tried a lot of expensive face packs and creams to get rid of them. However, nothing has helped and even home remedies such as tomato and lemon juice haven’t done the trick. In fact, because I have dry skin, these juices actually make it even more dry and cause white patches. What should I do? — shaleena Naik, santacruz (w) Dear shaleena, There is a rather simple solution to your problem. Skip the expensive creams and rub a slice of raw potato all over your face, focusing on your scars. Potatoes contain enzymes that help fade red patches and reduce the appearance of blemishes. Also, because potato juice isn’t acidic in nature, it won’t dry out your skin either. Not only is this method pocket-friendly, it will give you results in as quickly as two weeks!
S
uffering from a cold, cough or fever often means that your body is reacting to a sudden change in weather. However, seasonal weather changes can also adversely affect your skin. Dr. Rickson Pereira, consultant dermatologist at Dermatherapie Centre, Skin, Hair and Laser Clinic, tells us, “Some common skin problems experienced during such times are fungal infections, boils, eczema, pimples and sunburns. Your scalp and hair are also affected, resulting in an itchy scalp, hairfall and damage to hair texture.” But, don’t worry, because there are several ways by which you can protect your skin from the atrocities of the climate.
CleaNser ChaNge The first prerequisite for dealing with change in climate is opting for a new cleanser. If your skin is oily, it will tend to become dry during weather change and similarly, if your skin is dry it will become oily. Dr. Rickson suggests, “For cleansing, use mild cleansers or body washes to
minimise skin irritation. In case of active eczemas, it is better to avoid all soaps and detergents until your skin heals.”
shower CheCK Hot showers cause the maximum damage to your skin. They make your skin dry, so we suggest that you bathe using lukewarm water, so that you don’t feel too cold or hot, and keep your skin nourished and healthy. Having a cold water bath is not good for your skin either, as it can make your skin flaky.
moisturise less During warmer weather, moisturising with a creamy lotion is not advisable. You need to change your moisturiser or stop using one altogether. Instead, opt for a well-formulated toner, gel or serum to fulfil your skin’s hydration requirements. Dr. Rickson tells us, “Moisturise your skin at bedtime with a light, water-based moisturiser to hydrate your skin without making it feel greasy. A cream or serum containing vitamin C, hyaluronic acid or retinol can also be used at bedtime to provide anti-ageing, antioxidant and skin-repairing benefits.”
exfoliate less While exfoliation is necessary, too much of it is bad for your skin. It can damage your skin and strip it of its natural oils. So, exfoliate your skin only once a week, so that the natural oils in your skin don’t evaporate. As far as possible, use natural ingredients such as milk and flour for exfoliation.
hyDrate more Water can save your skin from all sorts of problems. So, drink as much water as possible. Increase your intake of water to eight to 10 glasses a day. This will make your skin glow and will protect it from the bad weather.
use a suNsCreeN A sunscreen is an absolute necessity throughout the year. Whether it’s cold or hot, a good sunscreen can save your skin from sun damage in all kinds of weather. If your skin is too oily, we suggest you use a mattifying skin lotion or combine your sunscreen with foundation and powder to make it look less greasy. Dr. Rickson says, “It’s important to wear a sunscreen on all exposed areas of your body. Use a broad spectrum (as it protects against both UVA & UVB) sunscreen, and make sure that it contains a physical blocker (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).”

UK bishop quits after affair
VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a British bishop who stood down after admitting to an affair with a married parishioner, the Vatican said on Monday. "The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Kieran Conry from the dioceses of Arundel and Brighton," a statement said. Conry, 64, had said in a letter to his parishioners that he had veered from the precepts of the Catholic church but underscored that his actions "were not illegal and did not involve minors."
EW YORK: Days after it published an offensive cartoon mocking India's successful Mars mission, The New York Times today apologised saying it was not trying to "impugn" India but was highlighting that space programmes are no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries. "A large number of readers have complained about a recent editorial cartoon in The International New York Times, about India's foray into space exploration. The intent of the cartoonist, Heng Kim Song, was to highlight how space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries," Andrew Rosenthal, NYT's Editorial Page Editor said in a Facebook post. "We apologise to readers who were offended by the choice of images in this cartoon. Heng was in no way trying to impugn India, its government or its citizens. We appreciate that readers have shared their
feedback, which we welcome," Rosenthal said adding that Singapore-based uses images and text "often in a provocative way" to make observations about international affairs, reports PTI.
The September 28 cartoon shows an Indian man, along with a bull, wearing a short "dhoti" and a shirt with the words 'India', knocking on the door to a room that has a sign 'Elite Space Club'.

Inside the room are two Western men reading a newspaper with the headline 'India's Mars Mission. Incidentally the cartoon came on the day India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in New York addressing thousands of IndianAmericans from the podium of the Madison Square Garden. Modi had on the previous day addressed the United Nations General Assembly and addressed several thousand people at a global citizen festival in Central Park. Several people had hit back at the newspaper and commented on the social media website that the paper should publish the apology instead of apologising on a Facebook page. "You Should apologise for the Racist Cartoon on your News Paper..Apologising in Facebook is not Enough," said one Facebook user. Another person said that a large number of scientists working at NASA are Indians. Several Facebook users said the cartoon should be removed from the newsppaer's website.

"We have the same vision, we love to understand and we do that by talking to each other, talking to other people and then try to address the questions we are interested in," MayBritt Moser told the Nobel Foundation Monday when asked about the role of marriage in her research. "And to be able to discuss this when you get an idea on the spot instead of plan a meeting in one or two or three weeks, that makes a huge difference," she added. G
lobal brokerage HSBC yesterday said it is "overweight" on India and the government's reform momentum is likely to drive positive news flow for the market that would help in sustaining the current market momentum. It said sticky inflation level, however, remains a cause for "concern". Inflation has seen some moderation in the recent past, falling from doubledigit figures in 2013 to 7.8% yearon-year in August. "We are overweight on India. We see several positives for the market, including structural reforms, supportive monetary policy, a decline in the cost of equity and a favourable corporate earnings outlook," HSBC said, adding that "this
should help sustain the current market momentum". Meanwhile, several reform initiatives are lined up -- including FDI in railway infrastructure, defence and insurance; and energy sector reforms. India is also considering 'big ticket' divestments in government-owned companies, which should help lower its budget deficit. Though at this stage, elevated equity valuations are a concern, the consensus is currently expecting earnings growth to come in at 15.3% for 2014 and 16% for 2015. On September 26, Standard & Poor's improved India's outlook to stable from negative saying the new political formation at the Centre has capacity to push reforms and put the country back on high growth trajectory. After taking over as Prime Min-
ister in May, Modi has launched host of initiatives, including 'Make in India' campaign to ease business environment and fetch FDI. Moreover, a decline in bond yields expected over the next two years could drive the cost of equity lower. HSBC’s rates strategist Himanshu Malik expects that the high inflation premium priced into India rates could soon change as the central bank switches to a medium-term inflation target of 2-6%. This, in turn, could trigger a fall in 10-year Indian government bond yields to 7.5% over the next 12 months and to 6-6.5% within 2-3 years, he said. "We believe this will be positive for Indian equities as it will lower the cost of equity for investors," the report said.

The Sensex has gained 25.49 % from December,31 to October,1 and
touched its life-time high of 27,319.85 on September,8. Positive investor sentiment following the formation of new government at the Centre and strong foreign fund inflows have been driving the domestic equity markets, experts said. "The undercurrent of the stock market is bullish although stocks are currently in the consolidation phase and buying may resume in the days to come," said an equities expert. Market men have maintained that the surge in investor wealth is also due to continued rise in listed firms. The total number of listed companies stands at 5,485. Sensex blue-chip companies whose

Credit ratio shows early signs of recovery, however systemic credit quality is still not out of the woods, says Crisil By A Business Reporter
C
orporate India’s credit quality is showing early signs of recovery, as indicated by CRISIL’s credit ratio (ratio of number of upgrades to number of downgrades) of 1.64 times for the first half (H1) of FY2014-15. Upgrades exceeded downgrades in H1 2014-15, with 741 upgrades as compared to 451 downgrades. Firms with low debt exposure primarily witnessed positive trends in credit quality. Despite the credit ratio exceeding 1 time, the ratio of the quantum of debt of the firms upgraded, to that of those downgraded (excluding financial sector players) remained weak at 0.59 times during the same period, reflecting continued pressure on systemic credit quality. CRISIL believes that the improvement in credit quality will be gradual and any significant recovery will be contingent to a sustainable increase in investment demand. The improvement in businessrelated factors was the key driver for 60 per cent of the upgrades. This is visible for export-linked sectors and non-discretionary consumer segments such as traders, packaged foods, pharmaceuticals, textiles and agricultural products, which continue to have the highest upgrade rates. Says Ramraj Pai, President CRISIL Ratings, “Our analysis indicates that there is a sharp disparity in credit quality trends based on leverage, profitability, and liquidity.” Firms with better profitability (return on capital employed [RoCE] exceeding 15 per cent), wit-
nessed three upgrades for every downgrade. Among firms with low leverage (debt-to-earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation [EBITDA] ratio below 2.5 times), more than three firms were upgraded for every downgrade in H1 2014-15. In contrast, weak liquidity, and pressure on profitability were key drivers for downgrades. Firms with high leverage (debt-to-EBITDA above 4 times) were subject to significant credit quality pressures as evident from their credit ratio below one during first half of 2014-15. Players operating in the construction, engineering and capital goods, and automobile (auto) ancillary sectors had higher downgrade rates than their counterparts in other sectors. Says Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director - CRISIL Ratings, “Credit quality buoyancy in the overall economy is still some time away; for that to happen, investment demand, which depends on the extent to which the central government pushes big ticket policy reforms, needs to substantially increase.” CRISIL expects a gradual improvement in the credit ratio over the medium term, as economic growth records mild recovery from the lows of the two years through March 31, 2014. The impact of the monsoons, progress by indebted corporates in reducing their external debt through asset sales or equity infusion, demand outlook in the economy, and the extent of policy reforms by the Government of India, will remain key monitorables.

‘J
aipur Gems’ has been doing some commendable work in the field of classical music for the last few years. They have instituted a lifetime achievement award to a senior musician, in the name of the late Pandit Umadutt Sharma who was once a noted musician and AIR official. They also give scholarships to budding young musicians. The grand award function this year, held at the Nehru Centre on Saturday, saw Dr
Prabha Atre being conferred the award by Ms Rajashri Birla. Atre doyenne of the Kirana gharana, received a cheque of Rs 1 lakh. Santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma gave an enthralling performance on the occasion. He played fascinating ragas to the tabla accompaniment by Vijay Ghate. The pakhavaj was played by Bhawani Shankar. A coffee table book on Sharma's contribution to music was released on the occasion. The book carries an extensive interview with the maestro fo-
cusing on his long career as a musician. It began in the early 1950s and still continues with the same old zest and spirit. Manek Premchand has contributed a detailed article elaborating Sharma's contribution to film music. Another grand function was held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at Chowpatty. Suman Chaurasia, the indefatigable cine music buff compiled a book carrying an elaborate discography of Lata Mangeshkar's songs entitled 'Lata Samagra 1942–2014'.
Four seasons to compliment 75 years By Vijay Shanker
A
n interesting dance ballet, Ritu Vilasam, choreographed by renowned Bhartanatyam exponent Kalashree Smt Lata Surendra, was presented at the Swathantra Veer Savarkar Auditorium to celebrate the Sapthathi of the Keraleeya Mahila Samajam. The programme commenced with the traditional invocation and Thiruvathirakali, followed by a drama by Madhu Villapil. The ballet that followed was a visual symphony of four prominent Indian seasons gathering inspiration from Mahakavi Kalidasa’s ‘Ritusamhara' was presented by Lata Surendra (Bharatanatyam) with disciples of Smt Jayashree Nair. The ballet explored each season evocatively. Two distinct classical styles were structured to interweave with each other, engendering the visual unfolding of each season. The spectacular opening with the chariot of the sun god and seven horses unfolded to showcase the dual aspects of Grishma (summer). Aditya – the sun as a life-giver – was evocatively portrayed by Lata through Nritya and Nritta. The contrast of the scorching summer was set for the cool summer nights in mansion

P
olitical satire has always been a staple diet of Marathi films. Director Satish Rajwade’s ‘Sangto Aika’ is a good example of this. The film is set in an obscure village called ‘Kambalwadi’ where it’s leader Annasaheb Thorat recently passed way. His statue is being installed in the village school where the local school teacher (Vijay Chavan) bemoans the lack of development and amenities in the village. Annasaheb Thorat’s two sons Vikramrao (Jagaanath Nivangune) and Jhunjhaarrao( Milin Shinde) are opponents, always at each others throats. In this village comes
terraces where moonlight, music and dancing to stringed instruments had lovers basking in togetherness. The interlacing chemistry between Lata and Sujatha in two distinct styles enframed the moment effectively. With
skillful choreography, Varsha the groom was depicted as wooing the earth or Prithvi reminiscent of a young bride dressed in a shroud of green. With the dark clouds moving as wild elephants, the lightning as flags, thunderous ANTHOLOGY OF DANCE: The ballet perfomed was a visual symphony of four prominent Indian seasons, gathering inspiration from Mahakavi Kalidasa’s ‘Ritusamhara'
WE ARE LISTENING a ‘tamasha’ touring party with the singer and dancer (Sanskruti Balgude) and her husband, the ventriloquist joker Ambatrao (Sachin Pilgaonkar), who is forever drunk. All hell breaks loose when Annasaheb’s statue is garlanded with chappals. Recently appointed PSI Kharade (Bhalchandra Kadam) and Hawaldar Palav (Vaibhav Mengle) take a vow to catch the culprit as soon as possible. They arrest the drunk joker as the culprit and jail him, promising to release him after the matter is re-
solved. But Ambatrao is a sharp intelligent person and he takes the matter of the village in his hands and awakens all those in power in the media and the Mantralaya and even the CM who promises to come to the village.
drumbeats and joy inexplicable, the team of dancers projected the scene well. Each dancer contributed to the choreography engendering the rasikas to marvel at the creativity through dance that engendered a rain that could drench through feelings. The high point of the choreography of Lata was in the depiction of Shishir – winter. Props gave the impression of closing interiors and exteriors, and lovers seeking the warmth of togetherness in the interiors of homes. The obvious longing of the damsel was mirrored by Mohiniattam danseuse Sujatha. Finally the symphony of the spring engulfing the senses had the duo celebrate love and life in a crescendo that highlighted the marvellous complimenting of man and nature. As Lata herself stipulated, “The ballet was the best way to pay tribute to the Keraleeya Mahila Samajam.” The ballet could have ideally been kept prior to the drama as it would have created a better opening for the sensitive denouement that featured 75 years. Lata Surendra, one of the vice-presidents of the UNESCO Dance Council is all set to participate in the 38th World Congress Of Dance held at Chiba, Japan, this month.
Finally all is well and all the village problems are solved, thanks to Ambatrao. The film is poignantly funny and makes one think. Director Rajwade has done a brilliant job. Producer Vidhi Kasliwal needs to be congratulated for making a film with such a different topic. Sachin Pilgaonkar is in top form as Ambatrao. Bhau Kadam and Vaibhav Mengle raise laughs. The music by Avinash Vishwajeet is good as are the lyrics by Shrirang Godbole and Guru Thakur. The DOP Suhas Gujarathi has filmed the village locales well with bright colors and fluorescent lighting. The film sends a clear message to the politicians and others living in villages.
The book has been edited by Gulam Quereshi who was assisted by Sanjay Mandloi. It contains the entire list of songs sung and recorded by Lata Mangeshkar in all languages. The Kanji Khetsi Hall literally spilled over with Lata fans as an audiovisual of her old songs compiled by Manek Premchand was screened on the occasion. Veteran broadcaster Ameen Sayani gave an appropriate speech on this occasion and released the book which was appreciated by avid music buffs, on what was an occasion to remember.

You will be able to find a few tender moments with your beloved in an otherwise busy hectic schedule of work and family responsibilities.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): You will feel quite relaxed and satisfied with your progress in business or career. Enjoy respite from a busy schedule rather than make plans for further growth. You are passing through a beneficial phase where good opportunities just fall into your lap and yield gains without pains. You are normally free and easy going with colleagues and associates that you know well. But do maintain a distance for safety sake.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You have to put off few activities that you had hoped to conclude today. Delay in payment will also cause a financial crunch which will be overcome soon. Maybe you are feeling insecure or your beloved is feeling abandoned.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Do not let go of the advantage you are enjoying, also do not get carried away with praise. You may be called upon to help out with a problem at work which is being handled by someone else but is your area of expertise. UMBAI: Back from his superb outing in Incheon where the Indian shooters finished with a paltry haul, the Nepal born Jitu Rai, was the stand out performer with his gold in the 50 metre pistol and bronze in the 10 metre air pistol team events. While he bagged a ticket to Rio after winning the gold, the 27-year-old old, isn't too overtly concerned about travelling to the South American country of Brazil and gives emphasis towards performing consistently rather than being happy with his qualifi-
cation. Speaking to ADC, where he along with other athletes were felicitated by the Olympic Gold Quest, Rai said the road is long and would need a lot of hard work in the process. “I don't give importance to qualifying for the Rio Olympics so much. What is important is how I keep performing consistently
Games in Glasgow and now during the Asiad in Incheon. A man from a humble background, the Naik-subedar in the 11th Gurkha Regiment of Indian Army said that he never thought that he had the potential of making it big and earning so many laurels that he has in his kitty now. He believes he has done a good job till now and wants to just concentrate on his good work. “I haven't fared so badly, I don't think of performing badly. I worked very hard for the Asian Games. After the gold in the Comonwealth Games, I did not practice JITU RAI, ASIAN GAMES GOLD MEDALLIST rather than just qualifying. Maintaining a good score is very important,” said Rai on the sidelines of the event. Rai has had three stellar performances securing three gold, first in the ISSF World Cup in Maribor in the10 metre air pistol event, then in the 50 metre air pistol event in the Commonwealth

so well, so did'nt expect to win. I never thought that I had it in me to make it big. This was all possible due to the rigorous practice. Now when people call me to felicitate me, I don't live in that 'awe'. Earlier, I felt I would lose focus but not now. Winning has become a habit and its important that it stays so,” added the marksman. While he surged to the gold in the 50 metre event, it was in the 10 metre air pistol, that he went astray due the local vocal support for the Korean shooters. “I won gold in 50 metres and 10 metres. My qualification was good, 585 out of 600 isn't bad.”
Yogeshwar eyeing World C’ships gold and direct berth in Rio By Chandraboli Mitra
N
EW DELHI: Happy to have ended India's 28year-long wait for a wrestling gold at the recent Asian Games, star grappler Yogeshwar Dutt is now aiming for a yellow metal at next year's World Championships and thereby earn an automatic berth in the 2016 Rio Olympics. "Next year my main target will be the World Wrestling Championships. I have got medals in all, important tournaments except World Championships, so I would like to win a medal there and preferably a gold," Yogeshwar told PTI in an interview. "World Championships will be the platform to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics and if I win a medal there that would automatically guaran-
tee a berth in the Olympic Games," he added. To be held in Las Vegas in September next year, the World Wrestling Championships will serve as the first qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this event, the largest number of athletes will earn a spot in the Olympics. Yogeshwar has won gold in all three tournaments -- International wrestling tournament in Sassari city, Italy, Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Asiad in Incheon -- after moving to a higher weight category of 65kg freestyle. He said the new weight division has suited him well and to a tee. "I have performed very well in this weight category. I am at a level now where I can
say that I am among the best wrestlers in world in this division. I am at a level where I can win an Olympic gold. This category is suiting me well. In Italy, I defeated the world champion, while in CWG none of my bouts lasted more than two minutes. In Asian Games also I did well," said Yogeshwar, adding, "I am happy to have won a gold for my country after 28 years. It was a long wait." The London Olympic bronze medallist admitted that he had faced some tough competition at the Asian Games. "The bouts in Asian Games were very difficult. The grapplers of the Asian region are of the level of World and Olympics. I faced tough competition from North Korea, China and Tajikistan. Against the Chinese grappler in the semifinal round, the
bout was a very closelyfought one," explained Yogeshwar. The 31-year-old Yogeshwar said that the recent Games has boosted his confidence. "These Games have boosted my confidence. I am now more confident of performing well at the Olympics," he insisted. "Competition would only increase in the Olympics with wrestlers coming from Europe and USA also. But a lot of Olympic champions are from the Asian region and thus, these Games have helped me judge where I stand." Talking about Indian wrestlers' overall performance in the Asian Games, Yogeshwar said they fell short by at least two medals.

EW DELHI: Her career revived after winning a gold at the just-concluded Asian Games, star discus thrower Seema Punia said that she is not content with her feat in Incheon and is eyeing a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Seema, the only individual gold medallist among track and field athletes in the South Korean city, rued the lack of financial support and expects corporate sponsorships coming her way to prepare for next year's World Championships and Rio Games. "I have been in the international circuit for more than 14 years and I feel it is a sort of revival in my career. I am relieved that I got a gold in Incheon because I need it to boost my confidence for bigger things ahead," Punia told PTI in an interview after returning home from Incheon. "I want to win a medal in World Championships next and of course my ultimate aim is to bag a medal in 2016 Rio Olympics," said Punia, who held the national record from 2004 to 2012 when Krishna Poonia broke it. The 31-year-old Punia, who hurled the disc to 61.03m in Incheon to bag the gold, said her training at the United States under coach Tony Ciarelli has helped her a lot and she would request the government to send her for foreign sojourn before World Championships and Rio Olympics. "I trained under Tony before the 2012 London Olympics and then for three months -- May, June and July -- before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and that has helped me a lot in reviving my career. I will approach the sports ministry in a few days to request to send me to US again as soon as possible because I want to do well in the World Championships (in Beijing in August)," she said. "Earlier, I got sponsorship from 2011 to 2012 from the Mittal Champions Trust but it has stopped sponsoring athletes. I am a poor sub-inspector at Haryana Police with a little over Rs 30,000 salary per month. So, I need sponsorship from corporate sector to realise my dream of winning a medal in Rio Olympics," she said.

P
UNE: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi got off to a flying start by quickly winning the first round of the World Junior Chess Championship which commenced at Hotel Hyatt, Pune. The long 13-round gruelling event kicked off with 137 players from 50 countries and 78 participants in the girls category. Top two seeds Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia and seed Robin Van Kampen also scored effortless victories even as favourites fumbled in the very first round which is very unusual in a Swiss League tournament of this magnitude FM Rakesh Kumar Jena rated 2164 created a flutter when he held higher rated and 10th seed GM Grigoryan of Russia to a draw after 30 moves of a Sicilian Defence. Untitled Sai Vishwesh also rose to the occasion and 14th seed GM Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan to a draw in a Spanish Opening game which lasted 50 moves. The biggest upset of the day was the loss of 19th seed IM Murali Karthikeyan (2499) losing to his Tamil Nadu state-mate Siva Mahadevan. However it was 10-year-old Nihal Sarin, freshly crowned World-Under 10 Champion at Durban who stole the limelight with a fantastic 94 move victory over higher ranked IM Jonathan Westerberg of Sweden. “Obviously today’s match was a very tough one as it lasted so many moves but there was no tension and I enjoyed it very much.” Interestingly this was the very

ADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his third hat-trick in five games as Real Madrid moved into the top four for the first time this season with a 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. It took Ronaldo just two minutes to extend his scoring streak to eight games as he headed home Gareth Bale's cross and Karim Benzema made the game safe when he doubled Madrid's lead just before half-time yesterday. Bale teed up Ronaldo once more to make it 3-0 and the Portuguese then turned provider for Benzema to tap home his second of the game. Ronaldo rounded off the scoring two minutes from time when he unintentionally deflected Pepe's effort home to take his tally for the season to 17 goals in just 11 matches in all competitions. Victory takes Real moved back to within four points of leaders Barcelona behind Valencia and Sevilla, but ahead of champions Atletico Madrid who drop down to fifth. A fourth defeat in five league games for Athletic, meanwhile, means Ernesto Valverde's men end the week-
end in the relegation zone. Madrid were back to full strength after coach Carlo Ancelotti had rested a few of his regular starters in the 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in midweek and took just two minutes to make the breakthrough against an Athletic side shorn of confidence. Bale turned onto his weaker right foot, but still managed to pick out a perfect cross for the unmarked Ronaldo to head home at the back post. Athletic 'keeper Gorka Iraizoz then made a smart save low to his right to deny Ronaldo a second and Benzema just couldn't stretch to turn home another Bale cross as the hosts piled on the pressure. However, the Basques settled midway through the half and Iker Muniain's spectacular dipping volley from the edge of the area forced Iker Casillas into action with a fingertip save. Crucially Real managed to get the second goal before half-time, though,
as Benzema rose highest to head Luka Modric's corner in via the crossbar. Bale wasted a great opportunity to make it 3-0 five minutes into the second-half as he blazed over with just Iraizoz to beat. However, the Welshman made amends five minutes later when he raced onto Benzema's pass and squared for Ronaldo to tap home his second of the night. Bale came close again when he shot just wide after being set up by a lovely backheel from James Rodriguez and was then flagged offside when he did finally have the ball in the net. Madrid were continuing to open up the Athletic defence at will and made it 4-0 21 minutes from time when Ronaldo unselfishly squared for Benzema to roll into an empty net rather than going for a hat-trick. Ronaldo did then go in search of his third hat-trick in five games, forcing Iraizoz into a flying save with a powerful header. However, the World Player of the Year wasn't to be denied and registered his 26th hat-trick for the club, albeit with some fortune when he deflected Pepe's effort past the helpless Iraizoz.
Real's Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his third goal during a Spanish La Liga soccer match between Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid in Spain.
31 Koevermans steps down as Indian football coach
SILIGURI: Following a spate of mediocre outings, Indian football team coach Wim Koevermans stepped down from the post soon after the country suffered a defeat in an international friendly, here. After India lost to Palestine 2-3, Koevermans declared in the post-match presentation ceremony that that he isn't continuing as coach of the Indian national team. "This was my last match as the coach of the national team and I will not be taking up the post of AIFF's Technical Director for private reasons," he said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my stint and stay in India. It was a nice gesture by the players," he referred to the Guard of Honour which the players gave to Koevermans at the end of the match. Koevermans' contract as the national coach with AIFF ends on October 31, 2014. "When I took charge I was told to change the style of play and there has been a huge improvement on that front. We created chances in every match that we played and played some good football. But that hasn't been enough," he stated. "I never like losing. The boys stayed so much committed on the ground today," he said in reference to India's upcoming match against Palestine.

OKKAICHI (Japan): Jules Bianchi's father was rushing to Japan Monday where the Formula One driver was in intensive care with a serious head injury, after one of the worst crashes the sport has seen in nearly two decades. The French driver underwent emergency surgery on Sunday after slamming into a recovery vehicle on the Suzuka track near the end of a rain-sodden Japanese Grand Prix. Formula One's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said the 25-year-old Marussia driver had been rushed to hospital after suffering a "severe head injury". A small crowd of journalists had gathered Monday outside the Mie Prefectural General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi, the nearest hospital to the track. The hospital was refusing to comment on the driver's condition, citing patient privacy and directing enquiries to the FIA. An AFP reporter at the scene said Marussia team principal John Booth and team general manager Graeme Lowdon had arrived at the facility.

Venezuelan Formula One driver Pastor Maldonado was also seen at the hospital, where Felipe Massa had been spotted Sunday evening. All three drivers are represented by agent Nicolas Todt, who was understood to be on his way to Yokkaichi from Paris. Bianchi's father was flying from France to be at his son's bedside and was expected to arrive at the hospital Monday evening. "Jules is seriously injured," Philippe Bianchi told
France 3 television on Sunday. "He is undergoing surgery for a head injury and we will need to wait 24 hours to know any more on his condition." An unconscious Bianchi had to be removed from the wreckage of his car after the horror smash, which happened as he ploughed into a recovery vehicle lifting Adrian Sutil's prone Sauber away from danger after the German had skidded into a wall on lap 42.
