Remembering Rajni Patel R

ajni Patel dominated the political scenario in Mumbai for over ten years beginning 1969. His organisat i o n a l s k i l l s helped the Congress in many ways. He had a big part in the victory of Congress leader V. Krishna Menon. He did so much for the improvement of the image of the Congress, that Indira Gandhi selected him for the BPCC president. Rajni proved his mettle when he very successfully organised two election campaigns on behalf of his party in the Lok Sabha in 1971 and the State Assembly in 1972. The Congress won against heavy odds. Rajni Patel came to Bombay when he was 31. He made Bombay his home. Today is his birth anniversary.

rime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday callled upon the Indian diaspora across the world to unite as a positive global force in the cause of humanity. In his inaugural address at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, he recalled that exactly 100 years ago, a Non Resident Indian – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – had returned to India to serve the people. Today, he said, he was welcoming NRIs from across the world as a Non Resident Gujarati.

he Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Maharashtra seems to be on its way to becoming a hotbed for corrupt practices, going by the information received through a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali. The RTI revealed that in the past nine years almost 15 officers were found involved in corrupt practices and Food Inspector (FI) rank officers in the department were reportedly found foremost in such activities. Galgali had filed an RTI query with the FDA of the Government of Maharashtra seeking information about the list of officials on whom cases are registered for various reasons or offences by the de-

Rajni Patel: Service above self N

ehru Centre is an important landmark in Mumbai. The first project which was completed there was Nehru Planetarium. This was followed later by the construction of Discovery of India museum. Lakhs of people have visited the national memorial to Jawaharlal Nehru. The man who conceived this project and executed it was Rajni Patel, a leading politician of the time. He raised this memorial as a tribute to his friend, guide and mentor Jawaharlal Nehru. Originally planned as a Rs.10 lakh project, it expanded to a great monument to any single leader in the world. Rajni Patel spent a lot of time discussing the project and collecting money for its implementation. The first phase of the project -Nehru Planetarium was inaugurated with great fanfare and the foundation for the Discovery of India was laid later. Rajni was a politician with a difference. His entire life was spent in the service of people. It is not only in Mumbai but also in various other parts of the country that he rendered services to the people. He was the general secretary of the Citizens' Relief Committee in 1979. He initiated huge relief operations for the drought victims of Marathwada

fter experiencing various issues faced by students and parents to reach the state board office for verifications of the examination documents and to get online mark sheets of the board examinations, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has finally launched an online process for verification of document and to get online mark sheets. Yesterday celebrating its Golden Jubilee, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Vinod Tawde inaugurated the portal www.boardmarksheet .maharashtra.gov.in. This portal will enable students of School Secondary Certificate (SSC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) to download their digital mark sheet online as well as students can get the certificate of benefit seeking online verification of academic records. The system will be introduced in three phases. The first phase includes providing PDF mark sheets from the 2014-2015 academic year. Next, the department will create an electronic database of marks of students who have passed out in the last decade. Measures to prevent misuse of the digital certificates are being taken. In the third phase, students will be able to apply online for a duplicate mark sheet.

and for victims of flood in the states of Bihar, Kerala, Orissa and Tamil Nadu. He was the first to organise relief for the victims of riots in Jamshedpur. In 1979, he undertook relief operations for flood victims in Morvi, Vidarbha and Gujarat. Rajni Patel's generosity was extended to many cultural, social and educational organisations. It was the funds he raised that helped papers like National Herald, Kesari, The Patriot. He was a member of Board of Directors of Associated Journals Ltd. -- pubishers of National Herald and Times of India. Rajni was for some years involved in trade union activities. He was forced to go underground to avoid arrest. Three years later, he ended his connections with the Communist Party of India. He set up practice and the very first case Barrister Rajni Patel took up went in favour of his client. He had a big success in his legal practice. He soon appeared in labour and detention appeal cases. He soon became famous as a constition expert and later in criminal cases. He became famous as a criminal lawyer in Bombay after the Sarojibala case at Rajkot and Nanavati murder case in Bombay were decided. He became President of the Indo-Soviet Cultural Society. He promoted friendship and coopera-

tion between the Soviet Union and India. During this period he helped build ISCUS all over the country.

Finally, he went back to his village but his father would not allow him to step into the house. He was perhaps the youngest prisoner in the freedom movement: For taking part in picketing liquor shops and asking people to boycott foreign goods, he had committed a crime during the British Raj.

In 1939, Rajni qualified as a Barrister from Middle Temple. He accepted an invitation from the American Youth Congress to visit the United States. He stayed in the US for nearly a year. He made speeches there about India's struggle for freedom. He wrote a pamphlet 'Brother India' and Paul Robeson wrote a foreword. Later he visited Japan and Shanghai. The Chinese guerillas who met him wanted to take him to Yennan, headquarter of Mao Tse-Tuang, Chu Teh and Chow EnLai. At Hong Kong however he was captured by the British and sent back to Bombay. During 1942-1944, he did a lot of cooperative work. Along with a couple of colleagues, he set up cooperatives and unions in order to check black money. He also led a textile strike in Ahmedabad. Rajni Patel's health began to deteriorate from 1980. He died on May 8 at Jaslok Hospital. Rajni Patel was one of those icons who regarded sacrifice and service as more essential than the self. He had a most adventurous life from his youth to the end of his life.

Metro will cost Rs 10-40 from tomorrow: HC By Philip Varghese

T

he Bombay High Court yesterday cleared the decks for the Metro fare hike in the city. Coming down heavily on the Maharashtra Government for delaying the formation of a Fare Fixation Committee for over a year, the court said that R-Infra and MMOPL (Mumbai Metro One Private Limited) can keep the fare band between Rs 10 to Rs 40. If MMOPL (joint venture between Reliance Infra and MMRDA) wants, it can now increase the fares in Mumbai metro to Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40. This will mean that the fares might double in some cases as the current fare band is between Rs 10 to Rs 20. The new fares will be applicable from January 10, a senior lawyer representing MMOPL said.

Fare Fixation Committee The court also ordered the formation of a Fare Fixation Committee by January 31. The committee has been directed to decide on the fare issue within three months from January 31. It refused MMRDA's (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) plea for an interim stay on its order till January 31. “We wish to take the matter to the apex court and seek a stay on this order for three weeks,” senior counsel Aspi Chinoy who appeared for MMRDA, told the court. But the court said that the government had failed to form the Fare Fixation Committee for over a year, leading to the escalation of the

issue. It said that the operators were already suffering losses. “The respondents (R-Infra and MMOPL) have said that at the current rates the daily loss for the company is Rs 85 lakh. If the fare band is increased to Rs 10 to Rs 40, the daily loss will come down to Rs 62 lakh,” the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice BP Colabawalla said. After the MMRDA sought a stay on the order, the court immediately calculated the loss due to the stay.“At the current rate, the loss is Rs 85 lakh. If the rates are increased to Rs 10 to Rs 40, the daily loss will be Rs 62 lakh. This means that there will be a difference of Rs 23 lakh. Granting stay till January 31 would mean loss of Rs 23 lakh for 23 days, which is over Rs 5 crore,” the Chief Justice said.

Operational costs R-Infra and MMOPL too opposed MMRDA's plea for a stay. They said they were struggling to meet the operational costs. “Today we are fighting to meet the operational costs. It is a loss for us who have put the maximum amount of money. Even after the costs are increased to Rs 10 to Rs 40, the losses will not stop. It will only be reduced. Moreover, the appellate has not denied our claim of losses,” senior counsel Janak Dwarkadas, representing MMOPL, said. The court, while accepting the argument, said that if the Fare Fixation Committee finds the new rates unreasonable, it will pass on the benefit to the commuters. “But if the FFC finds the rates reasonable, there is no way for the operator to recover

the losses,” the court observed. It said that the observations made in its order will not affect or prejudice the Fare Fixation Committee. MMRDA had appealed before the division bench of the court against a single-judge order denying the state government the right to decide the fares of the Mumbai Metro. Justice RD Dhanuka had, in April last year, dismissed MMRDA's petition on the grounds that the Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) had the right to decide the initial fares till the Fare Fixation Committee arrived at a figure.

Commuter reactions Shivani Shah (26), who works in public relation, said, “I stay in Andheri and commute daily to Sakinaka where my office is located. I find commuting in the Metro affordable, so even after the fare is increased it wont affect me. I have to reach my office early in the morning and the Metro does not get stuck in traffic.” Amit Dube (16), a student, said, “Jagruti Nagar station is near my house and I go for tuitions in Saki Naka, which is near a metro station. I commute in the Metro for Rs 10. However, if the prices increase, I would rather take a bus or share auto.” Autorickshaw drivers think that once the prices of the tickets increase, the share auto business will also increase as people will prefer going by rickshaws; The ADC spoke to drivers near the Andheri and Ghatkopar stations who seemed very happy with the Metro fare hike. Subash Kumar (30), said, “If the

Metro fares increase it is going to be very good for share autorickshaw drivers, as earlier commuters were not ready to even go for Rs 10. They would just travel in the Metro for cheaper and faster rates. However, after the prices increase, the commuters would prefer share autos.” Thampy Kurain, secretary of an autorickshaw union, said, “Commuters will prefer buses and autorickshaws. However, the Ghatkopar to Versova route generally has a lot of traffic, so a person will prefer using the Metro because time gets saved.” (With inputs from Aroosa Ahmed)

CAPTURE: At the Police Club at CST, yoga practice goes on every day. Yoga is expected to improve mental and physical power of the Mumbai Police.

Friends and promotions There's an old saying: friends and promotions cannot go hand in hand. One has to let go of one for the other. Naturally it is painful. But it is more painful when the friends are animals who cannot express their pain of separation. This is the story of my friend Vijay Khabale

who was recently promoted to the job of Public Relations Officer of the BMC. What distinguishes him from other civic officers is that he strives to achieve perfection and for that he burns the civic lights late into the night. Naturally, the 9 to 5

types don't like to work under him. He has contributed three things to his department – a VIP directory, an annual calendar, and the Diwali 'faral'. MLAs, MPs and Lt Governors would often send requests for a VIP directory. Besides general information, it had contact numbers of every public servant and institution, right from the Raj Bhavan to the junior engineer of

the local ward, and all emergency services. The commissioner was very impressed with the calendar and wished to send a copy to the PM and President of India. Newly appointed Governor was impressed with the idea of the Diwali 'faral' as it contained everything require to celebrate the festival, from soap to sweets. Before his promotion, he had a non air conditioned cabin which over looked the sprawling Azad Maidan. He also had three black feathered friends – crows. They would come into his cabin at 1 every afternoon and call out to him. He'd feed them. They didn't accept food from anyone else. Over the years he got used to sharing his lunch with them. On fasting day like Navratri, he would order a meal for them from the canteen. Now he has a big air conditioned cabin and the windows are permanently shut, and multi coloured plastic curtains are drawn. The walls are covered with photos of India's heroes and national leaders. On one wall is a digital frame which keeps tracks of his meetings and daily schedule, and on another wall is a big board inscribed with the names of his predecessors. His poor feathered friends no longer have access to his cabin and neither do their cries reach him.

Spiritual event

More than 50 lakh pilgrims venerated the relics of the Saint during the 43-day SFX Exposition at Old Goa. Months of planning and chalking out of the solemn event ended on a successful note as the relics were carried back from the Se Cathedral to the Basilica of Bom Jesus – the resting place of the Saint. Since the commencement of the SFX Exposition on November 22, 2014, more than a lakh pilgrims venerated the relics daily, and during the concluding days, timings for veneration were extended by a few hours to meet the rush and long queues. Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio led the concluding Mass on Sunday assisted by Archbishops Philip Neri Ferrao of Goa, and Stanislaus Fernandes of Gandhinagar and Bishops Lumen Monteiro of Agartala, Anthony Alwyn Fernandes Barreto of Sindhudurg and Oswald Lewis of Jaipur. Goa Tourism also played a key role at the SFX Exposition by assisting visitors at the Old Goa Complex, disseminating information and providing tourism related services. Hop On Hop Off vehicles were introduced to give pilgrims and tourists an insight into Old Goa’s heritage Sites.

n the one hand while the BJP mission has taken off to enroll one crore members in the state, on the other, the Congress and its erstwhile partner are virtually struggling to carry on their muchhyped membership drive. After the poll debacle, both Congress and NCP are finding it difficult to attract new people to the party. On November 25, 2014, state NCP president Sunil Tatkare had written to all the state office bearers and district presidents on the membership drive plan. Then it was proposed that the membership drive will be launched from December 12, Pawar's birthday and will continue up to January 31 this year. It was expected that well over 50 lakh new members will be enrolled during the special member-

ship drive. However, the whole exercise received hardly any response. Significantly the Congress office bearers too failed on this front. The party has announced the membership drive nevertheless. The party leadership is seriously thinking to start a damage control exercise by motivating the party workers to take up the task of registering new members. According to sources, ever since the humiliating defeat of the party nominees in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, both NCP and Congress are facing a precarious situation. There is a distinct lack of enthusiasm among the workers. They are looking for new opportunities in BJP or Shiv Sena, as a result, the membership drive turned into a damp squib. By-polls for four MLC vacancies on Jan 30 By Prashant Hamine

T

he Election Commission of India (ECI) yesterday announced by-elections for the four legislative council vacancies caused recently. As per the election programme announced yesterday, the election for the four vacancies caused in the elected byMLA's constituency shall be held on January 30. The four vacancies caused are due to retirement of sitting MLCs – Prithviraj Chavan (Congress), Vinod Tawde and Ashish Shelar (both Bharatiya Janata Party) and Vinayak Mete (Nationalist Congress Party). As per the election programme announced yesterday, the notification for the

election shall be issued on January 13, last date for filling of nomination papers is January 20, scrutiny of nomination papers shall be taken up on January 21, last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is January 23 and polling and counting of votes will be taken up on January 30. Out of the four vacancies, the party-wise breakup of seats previously held was as follows: Congress one, BJP two and NCP one. wandi's Kapil Patil not only quit the NCP, but successfully contested the Lok Sabha polls. The trend continued in the Assembly polls. Konkan NCP leader Deepak Kesarkar raised a banner of revolt against the leadership, quit the NCP, was elected to the Assembly and subsequently inducted into the state cabinet. In NaviMumbai, veteran NCP leader Manda Mhatre lodged a protest against the Ganesh Naik family, quit NCP a few weeks prior to the elections and successfully contested the Assembly polls as a BJP nominee. The situation in the Congress is similar and many leaders crossed over. State NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “The NCP does not have a record of the new members enrolled from December 12, as most of the office bearers have not taken the membership books from the party office.”

theft was reported from the Bhayandar branch of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), apparently during the wee hours on Thursday. According to the police, unidentified thieves broke into the LIC branch office in Himalaya Complex near Golden Nest Circle in Bhayandar (East) and decamped with Rs 2.16 lakh cash. Not ruling out an inside hand in the crime, Senior Police Inspector Dhanaji Kshirsagar said, “Usually the office kept relatively small amounts, but that day the amount was much higher, raising a needle of suspicion.” Although the office lacked CCTV surveillance cameras, the police are checking cameras installed in the vicinity. A case of theft has been registered at the Mira Road police station. Further investigations are on.

ing too. The boy had stolen his mother's ATM card as he had no money, said the police. “We tried to find out the locations where he used the ATM card and there was a transaction in Bengaluru,” said a police officer. “We searched at least 100 lodges there. Later, we received info that the duo had boarded a bus to Mumbai. We found them at the Kurla terminus on Thursday early morning after they alighted from the bus,” said Virendra Mishra, DCP, Zone VIII.

n a brazen daylight crime, an estate agent turned small-time builder was hammered to death by four unidentified assailants in Nalasopara on Thursday afternoon. According to the police the deceased has been identified as Mangesh Yadav (45), a resident of Wagheshwari Hill building in Nalasopara (West). Yadav was supervising

work at an under construction temple site near his apartment when four assailants armed with hammers and knives mounted a violent assault on him at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. Yadav was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared dead before admission. Although the motive behind Yadav’s murder is still not clear, the police are determining whether he had

personal enmity with anyone or the crime was a fallout of financial or land related dispute. An investigating team from the Nalasopara police station is scanning footage of CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity of the crime spot. It may be recalled that another builder – Rajesh Singh (35) was shot dead outside his office in the Sainath Nagar area of Nalasopara (East) on November 5.

Discussion about the efficiency of private hospitals in treating patients probably being more than public hospitals, evoked passionate responses from the panelists.

“There is nothing more any hospital abroad can do than what our public hospitals can do. It is saddening to see that there is a purposeful sense of making these institutions decay. It is these hospitals and institutions that have served the country for well for so long despite all odds. Instead of giving them a place of pride, they are being downgraded due to lack of proper administration and support,” said Dr Udwadia. According to Dr Pandya, “These public hospitals and institutions function against all odds. The staff working there face many difficulties but still serve people and manage to save lives. It is these places that should get the best of doctors, gadgets, instruments, techniques so that the common man can have access to quality health care.” Some of the other topics that were touched upon were the issue of cut practice, attitude of hospitals towards patients, monetisation of the

After registering an FIR against the youth, the cops launched a manhunt to nab him and finally nabbed him at Kurla terminus through an ATM card location. According to the Kherwadi police station sources, the duo were friends and studied in the same school in Bandra. The police swung into action after a case was registered with the police by the girl's parents on Monday. “The girl's parents approached us when she did not return from school on Monday afternoon. They told us that they suspected a boy with whom she had an affair to which they did not subscribe,” said a police officer. When the police inquired with the boy's parents, they got to know that he had gone missing too. The boy had stolen his mother's ATM card as he had no money, said the police. “We tried to find out the locations where he used the ATM card and there was a transaction in Bengaluru,” said a police officer.

Ponder awhile… “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realising Him.” — Mahatma Gandhi

A great leader R

ajni Patel whose birthday will be celebrated today was a born leader. He will be remembered by lakhs of people for the service he rendered. From early in his life, he took part in the freedom struggle. It looks like he had endless energy and a drive for rendering service to the people. He took part in the freedom struggle and spread Gandhi's message in rural areas. He perhaps did not know at that time, that the leadership quality was in him. There was apparently an itch in him to participate in the fight for Independence. With his interest in the freedom movement, he did not have much time for college education in India. When, however, he went to London, he passed his senior Cambridge examination. At that time, he was elected as the President of the Indian Majlis, Cambridge. He was just 18 then. During that time, his meeting with Jawaharlal Nehru came as a turning point in his life. It was Nehru who made him take up law. Rajni followed Nehru's advice and soon qualified as a Barrister from Middle Temple. Later, when he came back to India, he was jailed. His jailed colleagues included other 'anti-national' netas like Jayaprakash Narain, S.A. Dange and others. By this time, Rajni had become very popular in Bombay. He did a lot of work for the Congress. Indira Gandhi appointed him as the President of the B.P.C.C. Thanks to him, the Congress won in an assembly poll and did well in the national poll. He took part in cooperative and union activity. He entered the legal firm as well and distinguished himself as a top constitutional and criminal lawyer. It is his campaign that helped Krishna Menon win the elections from North Bombay. The list of his achievements are endless. And the crowning point of them all is the construction of a centre in memory of his friend Nehru. Today, the Nehru Planetarium and the Discovery of India Museum at the Nehru Centre at Worli draw huge crowds from the city and also from all over the state. Today, at the Nehru Centre there will be celebrations by thousands of people. And Mumbai remembers Rajni Patel as a great leader who has done service to them in many ways.

T

HE central government has formulated an ordinance, which, after promulgation, would allow transparent and successful auctions in the country’s mineral sector; it has also led to an amendment of the Mining and Minerals Development & Regulation (MMRD) Act of 1957. The ordinance would comprise within it the various mineral ores used to produce manganese, aluminium and iron, to be part of a transparent auction process, thereby significantly reducing the possibility of scams and scandals, and also convert this sector into a truly competitive market, where industrial players, both indigenous and overseas would be allowed to perform with their respective 'comparative advantage' attributes, in order to register a net gain from the minerals trade, collectively, comprising consumers, producers, and government. It is noteworthy that the Modi government, in its resoluteness to prevent spikes being injected in the wheel of its programme of bringing about the much-awaited economic reforms, has had to proceed through another executive action -- the eighth time, till date, after the new government was elected -rather than by way of a successful legislation through the country’s Parliament. The reason: absence of the government’s majority in the Rajya Sabha, and non-cooperation from the Opposition parties preventing the requisite legislation from being passed in Parliament. When transparency and efficiency in economic activities is a crying need of the time, the Opposition did not cooperate with the government in passing a legislation which serves the wider national interest.

Parliamentary democracy As regards this executive decision, some Opposition parties have expressed concern that the government’s repeated ordinances might result in demeaning the procedures of a parliamentary democracy. Their apprehensions are definitely to be taken to cognizance; but, if the government is faced with a hostile Opposition which often resolves to thwart a muchneeded legislation, what other valid alternative does the ruling dispensation have, other than issuing certain ordinances? The government does need to ruminate earnestly on the validity and necessity of legislations, but so does the Opposition need to realize that they are in Parliament to constructively

oppose and parley with the government, and not to resort to obstreperousness. Trade and the subsequent economic growth from the country’s mining sector has almost come to a standstill after the sundry controversies, judicial interventions, cancellation on coal mines and bans on the mining sector. The ordinance, once implemented, would facilitate the allocation and distribution of the country’s mines to several economic participants with competitive bidding, potential transparency and efficacy. Furthermore, the ordinance would allow smooth transfer of leases, enable an enhanced scale of

BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen operations in the mining sector and generate employment, and also attract internationally renowned mining companies such as Rio Tinto, among others, to expand their trade activities in the country, thereby increasing the scope for 'Net National Gains'; mineral production would receive a fillip, and India’s economic growth and earnings records from exports would also spiral northward. The mining sector of the country is currently exposed to an insignificant level of trade in the international commodities market. The trade is restricted to domestic producers, who are willing to supply at a rate which may not be fully in compatibility with the free-trade equilibrium international price or the world price. Apart from reducing the needless hurdles and the inherent scope for sharp practices implicit in it, the ordinance would also allow international producers to participate fruitfully in the country’s mining industry. Given the vast reserves of minerals and mineral ores situated in India’s mines, the volume of output generated from the activities of sundry mining companies would be

‘There is no path to truth’ T

HERE is no path to truth, and there are not two truths. Truth is not of the past or of the present, it is timeless; and the man who quotes the truth or who merely repeats will not find truth, because repetition is not truth. Repetition is a lie. Truth is a state of being which arises when the mind — which seeks to divide, to be exclusive, which can think only in terms of results, of achievement — has come to an end. Only then will there be truth. The mind that is making effort, disciplining itself in order to achieve an end, cannot know truth, because the end is its own projection, and the pursuit of that projection, however noble, is a form of self-worship. Such a being is worshipping himself, and therefore he cannot know truth. Truth is to be known only when we understand the whole process of the mind, that is, when there is no strife. Truth is a fact, and the fact can be understood only when the various things that have been placed between the mind and the fact are removed.

The fact is your relationship to property, to your wife, to human beings, to nature, to ideas; and as long as you do not understand the fact of relationship, your seeking God merely increases the confusion because it is a substitution, an escape, and therefore it has no meaning. As long as you dominate your wife or she dominates you, as long as you

MATTER & SPIRIT possess and are possessed, you cannot know love; as long as you are suppressing, substituting, as long as you are ambitious, you cannot know truth. It is not the denial of ambition that makes the mind calm, and virtue is not the denial of evil. He alone shall know truth who is not seeking, who is not striving, who is not trying to achieve a result. The mind itself is a result, and whatever it produces is still a result, but the man who is content with what is shall know truth. Truth is not continuous; it has no abiding

much greater than what the current output is. After meeting the needs of the domestic market, the surplus output would be exported. The country would find yet another avenue for foreign exchange earnings.

‘Producer Surplus’ Currently, the country’s minerals have an equilibrium market price, which responds, in general, to the domestic market demand and supply, thereby reflecting the dynamics of the domestic market; it is largely insulated from the affects of the international commodities market. When foreign economic firms participate, the greater output would enable exports as India would have an output surplus. Producers would export the excess output not required by domestic demand. By exporting to other countries, where the demand is potentially higher than that in India, the producers, both domestic and foreign, would register increased 'Producer Surplus': the increase in the well being of producers who are able to sell the product at a market price higher than the lowest price that would have drawn out their supply. The market clearing price level would also adjust itself more to the world price than the earlier domestic market price. Nevertheless, due to the international market pressure to adjust with the higher international market price, Indian consumers, in general, might face relative losses than before. Although India’s 'Consumer Surplus' -- an increase in the economic well-being of consumers who are able to buy a product at a market price lower than the highest price they are willing to be able to pay for the product – would lessen, the 'Net National Gains', resulting from increased earnings of the producer surpluses would offset the relative reduction of the level of current 'Consumer Surplus'. The contribution to the economy would be greater and the distribution of wellbeing better handled by compensating the losses by some change or by using some other direct means of redistributing wellbeing toward those whose welfare needs to be most looked into. It is a fervent desire that the government would do the required needful to ensure that the reformed mining sector operates without a whiff of any scandal or other shortcomings, and contributes in wealth and value to the country. place; it can be seen only from moment to moment. Truth is always new, therefore timeless. What was truth yesterday is not truth today; what is truth today is not truth tomorrow. Truth has no continuity. It is the mind which wants to make the experience which it calls truth continuous, and such a mind shall not know truth. Truth is always new; it is to see the same smile and see that smile newly, to see the same person and see that person anew. Truth is not to be had through books, through devotion, or through self-immolation, but it is known when the mind is free, quiet; and that freedom, that quietness of the mind comes only when the facts of its relationships are understood. But when the mind is free from all its projections, there is a state of quietness in which problems cease, and then only the timeless, the eternal comes into being. Then truth is not a matter of knowledge, it is not a thing to be remembered, it is not something to be repeated, to be printed and spread abroad. Truth is that which is; it is nameless, and so the mind cannot approach it. — Jiddu Krishnamurti March 12, 1950

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015

Tharoor in the red THE Delhi Police's decision to file murder charges in the Sunanda Pushkar death case raises more questions than answers. Why has the FIR been filed around a year after the death in a case where there has been so much media scrutiny? Or is the police being excessively cautious because it is such a high-profile case involving a former Union minister, namely Sunanda's husband, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor? Did it require a regime change at the Centre, for the UPA government to be replaced by the NDA, for the case to be given a fresh impetus? There are no easy answers to any of these questions but they do cast terribly poor light on criminal investigation procedures in our country. The fact that the viscera of the deceased has to be sent abroad reveals the shockingly low levels of technology and equipment available in our forensics science laboratories, a particularly worrying incapacity, given that forensics increasingly play such a crucial role in crime investigation and trials. This failure feeds delays and impacts credibility. When the police takes a year to file an FIR, for murder, it incites a soap opera-like situation, fuelling chaotic conjectures on social media and elsewhere much like in the Aarushi Talwar murder case. Even

Badminton player Saina Nehwal

Might is right IT was elevating to know that Saina Nehwal's name has been considered for the Padma Bhushan award. Saina, an ace badminton player, is a justifiable candidate like Sushil Kumar. But the depressing part is that she had to fight for her right. However, this is the best way to get things done in our country. The same yardsticks should apply to the Sarita Devi episode. The only thing that went against the boxer was that she belonged to a poor third world country. Had she been from the USA, UK or another advanced country, such a state of affairs would not have risen. The only principle on which the world works is might is right. — K V Raman, Malad

No principles Apropos your front page story 'Ghar Wapsi by Shiv Sena too' (ADC, Jan 8), the return of Shobha Raul to her parent body once again illustrates that our politicians have no concept of party loyalty or principles. Uddhav Thackeray made Raul Mayor of Mumbai – a post for which she had no qualifications whatsoever –

as delays and patchy accounts by the police fuel futile speculation, the bigger problem is that they also weaken its case, reducing the odds of conviction. Guilt or innocence has to be proven by hard facts and rational investigation not by an amateur chorus or by political sloganeering. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

APROPOS 'Who murdered Sunanda?' (ADC, Jan 7), the edit piece aptly points out how the Congress regime had sheltered so long Tharoor, one of their controversial leaders in this murder case. The investigation, as is done, points a finger at this prominent leader, whose otherwise deceptive face certainly puzzled the crime branch and the general public at large. Possibly he would have escaped unscathed had the Congress rule continued. Today BJP in an act of vengeance have exposed this. BJP otherwise also has been exposing culprits all over the country inclusive of Congress 'Jamai' Vadra, TMC leaders in WB etc. However, the big fish in Maharashtra involved in the colossal irrigation scam are yet to be netted except a few small ones. It certainly intrigues the public at large as to why there is a delay in this state in particular while the scams but in spite of that, she did not think twice about jumping ship and joining the MNS merely because her party would not give her a ticket for the Assembly elections. After the MNS was virtually wiped out, she realised her bread was better buttered on the Shiv Sena side and promptly asked to 'return home'. Not that the Sena has any principles either. In spite of her disloyalty and rank opportunism, Thackeray had no hesitation in taking her back because his party needs the numbers for the forthcoming BMC elections. The gentleman who called politics a noble profession must be turning in his grave. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

CP to continue IT is good that the government intends to extend the tenure of the Police Commissioner Rakesh Mario up to September as reported in the media. He is a 'no nonsense' police officer who has served the city very well and given a sense of security to women. His Crime Branch background has helped him immensely to carry out his duties and it needs to be said to his credit that he applied himself wholeheartedly to the problems of the city without pursuing a hidden agenda for rehabilitating himself after retirement. One hopes that in the remaining months of his tenure the city will see more improvements. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

FOUL play was suspected in SunandaPushkar's untimely death and now it has been confirmed that the gorgeous and beautiful wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was indeed murdered as Delhi police has now registered a murder case to give a new twist to the case. Sunanda Pushkar had a troubled marriage with her MP husband and this was known to all but the murder allegation by the men in uniform would now throw a lot of skeletons out of the cupboard which might create a sensation in the times to come. However, it is almost an year since Sunanda died an unnatural death and murder charge after almost an year and change in government at the Centre suggest something fishy which would have to be investigated carefully in an professional manner to nail the real culprits. The case should now be investigated by the highest investigating agencies of our land and the law should take its own course to unearth many hidden blocks in the murder. — S N Kabra, Goregaon

MYSTERY MURDER: With the Sunanda Pushkar case coming to light once again, Shashi Tharoor seems to be a worried man, as the police suspects murder.

IN a dramatic twist to the death of Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar, Delhi Police registered a murder case and the ex-minister is stunned with the revelations. The death had made headlines as it came after a little spat between the couple on Twitter over Shashi’s alleged affair with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. The findings of the report were not reported in total as Shashi Tharoor was then a Union Minister and elections to Lok Sabha were due at that time. The filing of the murder case has come nearly a year after 51-year-old Sunanda was found dead in a luxury hotel in Delhi. As poison was the root cause of the death now further investigations will be on to

go into the details. Even though Congress party brush aside charges of murder the case raised many doubts from the moment it was announced in a mysterious way. The medical report from All India Institute and Sciences were vague initially but now a clear report with more details have emanated and that gives Shashi Tharoor sleepless nights. There is no need for sensationalising the Sunanda murder case but justice should come out in open. As there is semblance of doubt the viscera samples are to be tested abroad to make clear about the motive of the murder. PM inaugurates ‘Dandi Kutir’ museum 12

NATION

ANDHINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the state-of-the-art Dandi Kutir, a museum on the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat's capital of Gandhinagar, on the occasion of the 13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD). The Governor's report comes a day after Omar met him in Delhi last night soon after his return from London after a 12-day visit to his ailing parents and asked him to relieve him as caretaker Chief Minister.

Ex-UP min defends terror attack in Paris

MEERUT/LUCKNOW: Former Uttar Pradesh minister and BSP leader Haji Yakub Qureshi today courted controversy when he sought to defend the terror attack on French satiricial magazine Charlie Hebdo, saying whoever shows disrespect to the Prophet will invite death. "Prophet Mohammad had conveyed a message of peace to the entire world and if anyone makes certain cartoons on him will invite death like the cartoonists and journalists in Paris," Qureshi said in comments that came at a time when the massacre came in for allround condemnation across the world. Qureshi, however, denied reports in which he was stated to have said that he will reward the attackers who killed Charlie Hebdo's Editor and cartoonist of the controversial Prophet poster with Rs 51 crore. Dev Goswami & Yamini Walia bring you a list of some of the most anticipated films of the year series lost steam early in its third avatar. Hollywood However, the only reason Furious 7 finds a

place on this list is because it will serve as a tribute to the late Paul Walker, one of the lead actors of the franchisee, who passed away in a tragic car crash last year. Directed by James Wan, known for horror films such as Insidious and The Conjuring, Furious 7 will see Jason Statham making his entry into the series as the antagonist who seeks revenge against the Toretto clan for his brother’s death.

CHappie

Releasing in March Science-fiction fans have something to look forward to with Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie just around the corner. The film has the potential to be a spy thriller of epic proportions and with the dramatic Cold War setting, it’s one that we’re eagerly awaiting.

avengeRs: age of UltRon

Releasing in April Do we need to explain why this film is part of our list? The first Avengers film was a big hit and featured excellent performances, comical scenes (read: The Hulk smashing Loki all over the place) and memorable action sequences. The sequel will see Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johanson and Jeremy Reener reprise their roles to engage in thrilling action sequences, in the second installment of this Marvel franchisee. The trailer of the film has already increased expectations — if you haven’t already seen it, catch it before the film releases.

silenCe

Releasing in November/ December Martin Scorsese’s Silence is the story of Jesuit priests in 17th century Japan. The film follows the account of a priest (played by Andrew Garfield) who is on a mission to find his mentor, who is believed to have renounced his faith. The subject of the film — religion — is something that Scorsese hasn’t addressed in previous films and though it could be controversial, with one of the best directors of our generation helming the project, it certainly is a must-watch.

BlaCk Mass

Releasing in September A true story of the relationship between USA’s FBI and the Irish mob, Black Mass was inspired by Whitney Bulgar’s life. Bulgar was a gangster, who turned out to be an informant, whom the FBI later tried to exterminate. tHe Revenant

Releasing in December Leonardo DiCaprio is back with another western, this time directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. However, they abandon him, he recovers, and then resolves to hunt them down. It is believed that DiCaprio postponed a planned sabbatical for this film, and that in itself has generated a lot of hype.

The film, which has been directed and co-written by Doug Ellis, the show’s creator, is one of the most anticipated films of 2015. The recently released trailer has gotten us really excited!

Releasing in November James Bond is back and this time, he’s rocking a drastically different avatar. Featuring rebooted versions of M and Moneypenny, one of the USPs of Spectre is the return of Sam Mendes, who directed Skyfall. The man behind Tevar Amit Sharma is all set to make his directorial debut in Bollywood with his upcoming film — Tevar. Rohit Pramar caught up with the erstwhile ad filmmaker to talk about the film >> Tevar’s intriguing script urged Amit Sharma to take up the project

n How did you make your foray into Bollywood?

I’ve wanted to make a film for a while now. However, I didn’t want to rush it. So, even though I got several offers, I took my time to decide which project I wanted to pursue. n So, what was it that made you accept Tevar?

I was intrigued by the idea behind the script. Tevar was first offered to me around three years ago, but at the time, I didn’t take it up. However, the concept of the film stayed with me all these years. I liked the fact that it was a film about a guy who becomes a hero by chance, and not by choice. n The film is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Okkadu. How

n What difficulties did you face while shooting Tevar.

One of the most difficult aspects of making this film was shooting the outdoor scenes. I was certain that I didn’t want to shoot these scenes in a studio right from the start. So, we shot on location in Agra and Mathura, and since Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee are all popular stars, there would always be a huge crowd outside the sets, making it difficult for us to manage the shoots. have to deal with them throwing any tantrums? They threw no tantrums at all. As an ad filmmaker, I have worked with several stars and so, I understand what you mean when you ask me about popular stars throwing tantrums. But, Arjun and Sonakshi were completely dedicated to the film. If I called them at 5am for a shoot, they reached on time without questioning me. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Arjun, Sonakshi and Manoj. n Are you nervous about the release of the film?

I have been so busy that I don’t think I’ve had the time to feel nervous. Having said that, I’m really excited about the film. I hope everybody likes it.

B

different is it from the original? We just took the basic idea behind Okkadu — of a guy who becomes a hero by chance — to write Tevar; everything else is different. It took us around seven months just to polish up the script. Also, if you directly translate a film into a different language, several things get lost in translation. So, I looked at the central idea behind Okkadu, and interpreted it in my own way.

right colours, strong lines and the use of expressive motifs accurately define R.B. Bhaskaran’s artwork. The Chennai-born artist’s style is heavily inspired by the history of illustrations, early modernist paintings and outsider art. His current exhibition, titled Forms & Colours, comprises of large-scale wall drawings produced on site, as well as a range of tiny etchings, which dabble in figuration and abstraction. At the exhibition, you can expect to see subjects such as humans, fish, mountains and elephants come together to create an alternate universe. When you view the collection, you will get a sense that the overall theme that Bhaskaran has been gunning for is evolution. Cats feature consistently throughout the artwork, and the bright colours that Bhaskaran has used stay with you long after you’ve taken a look at his paintings. But, if you are wondering why cats feature so dominantly in this collection, Bhaskaran tells us, “The cat and the fish represent the circle of life — one sustaining the other. The cat can also be termed as my muse. However, my renditions are not copies of the real animal; they are delineated forms that have a unique attitude with respect to the pose in which I render them.” When Up to January 12 Where Jehangir Art Gallery, 161, Kala Ghoda Contact 22843989

Designer purvi Doshi is now retailing her merchandise on her own website, purviDoshi.com. shirley mistry checks out the collection and brings you her verdict

B

efore we get into the details of whether the collection, prices and layout of Purvi Doshi’s website get our approval, we’re going to tell you one very important thing: www.purvidoshi.com is essentially a brand website, which tells you about Purvi and her brand and features sections that give you information about her designs, press coverage and images from past collections. It is to this website, that a shopping section has been added. This can be a good or bad thing. Good, because it is easy to find out more about Purvi’s style, and bad, because it doesn’t look or feel like an e-portal, which can be a deal-breaker for some. Also, since the layout of the website is simple and more suited to a designer’s portfolio, the display and layout of the shopping section, which is in keeping with the rest of the website, seems drab when you compare it to attractive ecommerce websites that are currently ruling the roost. The Shop Now section houses four subsections — fashion weeks, pret, festive and accessories. Under the first section, you can shop from the looks that Purvi has showcased during previous editions of the Lakmé Fashion Week. We love this section, because it showcases the garments as they were

>> Purvi Doshi’s website provides you information about the designer and her brand presented on the runway, giving you a sense of how these outfits will look on you and also helping you with styling tips at the same time. Although the section doesn’t stock too

many pieces, the ones that make the cut are truly beautiful. The pret section includes straight kurtas, kalidaar kurtas, tops, skirts, stoles, tunics and dresses. While the stoles

section has no items at the moment, the tops and tunics fare better than the kurtas, most of which look gaudy, with an overuse of colours and prints on each outfit. We then browsed through the festive section, which features kurtas, lehengas, blouses, saris and jackets. Of all the outfits in the festive range, we liked the lehengas the most. Featuring rich hues and subtle embroidery, these pieces are a refreshing change from the usual sequin-laden outfits that you find everywhere else. Finally, we clicked on the accessories section, which is supposed to comprise of shoes and jewellery, but has no items on display at the moment. Personally, I hate it when websites do this — there’s no need to add a category to your website if you don’t have any products to display in it! Another grouse that I had with the website is that they have a very limited collection to choose from. So, while you may have 10 options to pick from when it comes to festive kalidaar kurtas, if it is a straight kurta that you’re after, you have a grand total of one (yes, only one!) option to choose from. In terms of pricing, pieces showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week will cost you a pretty penny, but a tunic will set you back anywhere between `1,850-`14,500, while a lehenga from Purvi’s festive collection will cost around `50,000 — which isn’t too steep for designer wear. While we do appreciate the use of natural fabrics such as cotton, silk and khadi as well as the embroidery and mirror work, we’d only recommend visiting the website if you have the budget to purchase an outfit from the fashion week collection, and we certainly won’t be returning until they have sections that actually house products and provide ample options. en’s footwear brand, Florsheim, has introduced a new collection, which has been specifically designed with Indian sensibilities in mind. The aim behind this collection is to take high quality dress shoes to the next level with handcrafted shoes, which are available in two options — Venetian and Bit strap. The shoes feature hand sewn detailing and are crafted from genuine leather, with fully cushioned foot beds for extra comfort. The XL Extralight sole that these shoes use makes them light and comfortable enough to wear all through the day.

I

have a confession to make — I’d never been to an AND outlet before I stepped into their new store in Infiniti Mall. What I do know about the brand is from Anita Dongre’s website, which is an amalgamation of all her different labels and collections. The designs are refreshing, attractive, feature a bold use of colours and, talking just about the label AND, are an affordable alternative to her expensive apparel (a dress from her flagship label will cost you around `5,000) collection. The reason I feel the need to give you all this information is because when I entered the new outlet, I was really confused. The store itself is designed pretty well — a wide central pathway covers the length of the store, with racks of tops, dresses, tunics, bottom wear and accessories flanking either side. I also appreciated the new arrivals section — this is worth mentioning because this is a feature that is inexplicably disappearing from fashion stores in the city. While I have no complaints with the store design, it was the collection that disappointed me, and seemed unlike the quality I was used to from Anita Dongre’s label. The neatly colour-coded racks of women’s wear don’t offer new designs. The colours used on most dresses and tops are bold and attractive, but the designs are mostly run-of-the-mill. The lack of variety is extremely apparent — different silhouettes in various solid shades form a majority of the collection. And the clothes that do have prints or embroidery, are unimaginative to say the least. Does this mean that if you were to visit AND, you’d return empty-handed? Not necessarily. For example, their collection of solid black and green dresses and red and orange tops in Indian

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015

>> The new AND store houses a wide range of tops, dresses and accessories silhouettes was quite impressive — pair them with the right accessories and you can wear them to parties and events. The store also has a decent bottomwear collection, but it doesn’t offer too many options. The only items that I really liked were their neon coloured belts, which were chic and offered value-for-money. Overall, AND won’t leave you disappointed, but it won’t wow you either. The prices range from `599 to `4,000 and while some items offer value-for-money, others seem overpriced when you consider that you’re getting a dress or top that can be found at any other fashion store in the city. Their quality of finish is worth a mention though — you won’t find a stitch out of place. Visit AND in Infiniti Mall if you’re looking for a safe design that you can’t go wrong with (though I recommend checking out the website — I found that it had much better variety and designs). yamini Walia visited brewbot Pub & brewery in Andheri and gives you her verdict of this casual, funky space

W

ith new microbreweries popping up every few months in Mumbai, I wasn’t surprised when I first heard about Brewbot Pub & Brewery. While Andheri definitely doesn’t need any new pubs to add to its already saturated bar scene, a brewery makes for a refreshing change. So, looking forward to an interesting beer experience, I made my way to Andheri. Located on the same street as pubs such as Boveda and The Little Door, Brewbot is hard to miss. The brewpub is spread over two floors, along with an outdoor seating section. We chose to sit in the al-fresco where we could enjoy the slight winter chill. Reading through the fully stocked bar and kitchen menu further increased my expectations from my meal. However, disappointment followed soon after, because we were told that their brewery isn’t functional just as yet, due to

the usual issue — obtaining a permit. However, with a delicious menu in front of us, we were willing to let that disappointment slick off quickly. We started our meal by trying the Fullers London Black Cab Stout (`400). As a big fan of dark beer, I couldn’t get enough of this

>> The Goat Cheese Lollipops disappointing, but the Charbroiled Prawns (bottom left) are a must-have Irish brew. So much so, that I ordered a second round! We also gave their beer cocktails a try. The Beer n Margarita (`750), which sounded unique and interesting, impressed my dining companion. I, on the other hand, found it lacklustre in terms of taste and balance of flavours. Moving on, we ordered a Tuna Salad (`475), which was served with a mixture of vegetables and a hard boiled egg. Extremely

U

nless you’re talking about expensive Asian restaurants, who pride themselves on their authentic fare, it’s hard to come by a place that doesn’t pass off over-spiced versions of fried rice or noodles as Asian food. And so, it was with much scepticism that I stepped into the month-old Go Panda outlet in Lokhandwala, which promises pocket-friendly Asian food. My experience here, however, was surprising. The outlet is small and cosy, with black, white and red interiors and an al-fresco seating area, which can easily seat around 20 people. Their décor is upbeat and funky, with a mix of inspirational and quirky quotes plastered on the walls. Seated at one of their red tables outside, people milling in to get takeaways — they are currently functioning primarily as a takeaway service. Their menu isn’t extensive and comprises of dishes that are an amalgamation of different Asian cuisines. I saw several Thai, Chinese and Malaysian dishes on their menu and based on a glance at their menu, they do live up to their promise of delivering a range of flavours from Asian cuisines. I started my meal with Indonesian Chicken Satay Skewers (`200), which were cooked to perfection and served with a peanut sauce that tasted brilliant, but was too thick for my liking. However, apart from the consistency, I found no faults with the appetiser — its nutty, sweet flavour complemented the slightly tangy chicken skewers. They also have a range of sandwiches, of which I tried the Sloppy Joe Sandwich (`200) and the Vietnamese Smoked Chicken Sandwich (`220). The former might raise some scepticism amongst those who know that a Sloppy Joe is

light on the stomach, the combination of tuna and egg worked well and the salad offered an appetising mix of flavours. We also tried a few of their vegetarian starters, such as the Trio of Hummus & Home Made Pita (`295) and Goat Cheese Lollipops (`445). While we absolutely loved the former, which had hummus in three different flavours — classic, red pepper and curried pumpkin, the well-presented goat cheese lollipops, were a disappointment — they were over-salted and tasted quite average. Their Grilled Chicken Wings (`415), with a garlic, honey and chilly glaze were quite delectable, although I won’t call them the best wings that I’ve eaten in the city. We also tried their Charbroiled Prawns with Orange Chilli Dressing (`645), which were out-ofthis-world! This dish is a must-try for its great taste and the perfectly cooked, wellflavoured prawns. As part of my main course, I decided to give their Sautéed Mussels (`645) a try. I’m not familiar with mussels, so I had mixed feelings about this dish. The mussels seemed too chewy. We moved on to their Tenderloin Sliders (`395), which were delicious. The beef was perfectly cooked and

the buns were delightfully soft. We also tried their Mushroom Risotto (`525), which my vegetarian companion couldn’t get enough of — it was creamy, rich in flavour and very well seasoned. To end our meal, we chose the Trio of Pannacotta (`275) and their special Cheesecake (`315). You shouldn’t leave the restaurant without trying the pannacotta, which features three flavours — chocolate, caramel and blueberry. The caramel pannacotta was our favourite. The cheesecake, on the other hand, was good but not exceptional. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Brewbot, even though I was disappointed about missing the brewery. But, the place is a must-visit if you’re looking to spend a casual evening with friends over some delicious drinks and a scrumptious spread. traditionally an American classic, but Go Panda describes the sandwich as ‘an American-Asian fusion of minced ingredients in whole-wheat bread.’ There was nothing Asian about it, but it was a delicious sandwich nonetheless. I also liked their Vietnamese Smoked Chicken Sandwich, which contained a delicious wasabi hit. Next, I ordered the Burmese Curry with Coconut rice (`250) and the Malaysian Korma with Rice (`275). The Burmese Curry was an absolute delight and was accompanied by fragrant, fluffy coconut rice. Together, they made for the perfect comfort food. Even their Malaysian Korma was sensational, though the flavour of coconut was a little too dominant for my liking. For dessert, I was looking forward to their signature Chocolate Mousse with Sea Salt Caramel Drizzle (`80), but unfortunately, this was not available. So I tried the Peanut Butter and Chocolate chip Cookie and the Double Chocolate and Orange Cookie instead. Priced at `80 each, both cookies were moist and chewy. My only qualm was that the Double Chocolate and Orange cookie had no trace of the delicious tartness that you expect from an orange-based dessert. Overall, I was happily taken aback by what was served at Go Panda. With affordable prices and food that hits the spot, Go Panda is definitely worth a try. swim with the fish in maldives We love the idea of snorkelling — blocking out all other sounds and swimming amongst vibrant fish and spongy coral seems like the perfect way to unwind when life gets a little too stressful. Maldives, known for its picturesque beaches, has a vibrant snorkelling culture — one that we can’t recommend enough. In fact, if you love gawking at pretty, patterned fish in aquariums as much as we do, book a room at the Poseidon Undersea Resorts, which replaces one wall of your room with that of an aquarium. Laze in bed and admire the fish — sounds like a lot of fun to us!

C

utting down on your shopping, learning how to snorkel, watching one film every day — your bucket list is probably filled similar tasks. But, if you’re looking to add more activities to it — wacky or otherwise — then we have a list of some really fun ones that you should try at least once in your life. They’ve already won a place on our bucket list and we hope that they make it to yours as well!

>> Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge to witness the stunning view

>> If you’re an adrenaline junkie, try bungee jumping over Victoria Falls

Bungee jumping Between two countries No, we aren’t exaggerating. Although bungee jumping isn’t for the faint-hearted, the view from the top is truly breathtaking. During this particular version of it, you have to jump off a bridge near Victoria Falls, situated in no man’s land between Zambia and Zimbabwe, over a crocodile filled river. What’s more, is that gushing Victoria Falls provide the perfect backdrop for your jump. With so much to see and soak in as you shoot down, you really have to love adrenaline to appreciate this one.

>> Experience the beauty of nature by sky walking at The Grand Canyon

sky dive in sydney If you’ve ever wanted to sprout wings and fly, sky diving is the closest that you are going to get to turning this dream into reality. At Wollongong, in Sydney, Australia, you can dive from 14,000 feet above the ground. Apart from getting a literal bird’seye-view of the city on one side and the pristine Australian coastline on the other, if you are lucky, you will get to spot few dolphins flapping around in the waters, as you make your descent.

climB a Bridge in sydney There are only three bridges in the world that you can climb (well, legally at least), and Australia houses all three of them. We recommend climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which overlooks the harbour. The best thing about the bridge is that you can climb it even during the night. While the 2-3 hour long climb is certainly daunting, the view is sure to take your breath away and will definitely be worth the effort.

ride the waves in pondicherry

>> Head to Wollongong in Sydney for a breathtaking sky diving experience

sky walk at the grand canyon Want to be on top of the world? While that might not be possible, you can certainly experience something similar by walking 1,219 metres above the ground — a height that is equivalent to almost twice the height of the tallest building in the world (the Burj Khalifa, which is 828 metres tall). Soak in the majestic Grand Canyon as you walk through a 21m-long pathway that features glassed flooring to give you the surreal feeling of being suspended in mid-air.

If you want to give surfing a shot but aren’t too keen on spending an exorbitant amount of money, head to Pondicherry, where you can enrol at the Kallialay Surf School. If you’re an experienced surfer, skip the training and head straight to the Bodhi Beach. The beaches in both places are clean and pristine, and aren’t overrun by hawkers, making them an ideal spot to unwind if you are a beach baby.

TROPIC THUNDER

A film crew is in Southeast Asia filming a Vietnam-war memoir. It’s early in the shooting, but they’re already behind schedule and over budget. On the day an accident befalls the novice director, the cast and crew are attacked by a gang of poppy-growing local drug dealers, except the cast and crew don’t realize these aren’t actors who are stalking them. The thugs kidnap Tugg Speedman, an actor whose star seems on the decline, and it’s up to the rest of the ragtag team to band together long enough to attempt his rescue. Zee Studio, 9 p.m.

I love his comic timing and friendly nature. Playing Mulla Do- Piyaza will be a treat for my fans. Drop in oil prices is going to have differential impact on different countries. But for a country like India, it is really an opportunity to use this window of low oil prices to put in fiscal consolidation, to put in other kinds of reforms and to get growth back up. I just hope that India will take advantage of the low oil prices, which we expect will remain, unlike in 2008 when the oil prices fell and bounced back within six months. This time we expect oil prices to remain moderately low at least over the next year and may be more.

The Reserve Bank yesterday doubled to Rs 2 lakh the amount of loan furnished by cooperative banks under the Gold Loan – Bullet Repayment scheme. Earlier, all state and central cooperative banks were permitted to grant gold loans up to Rs 1 lakh with bullet repayment option. “On a review, it has been decided to increase the quantum of loan that could be granted under the scheme, from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh subject to conditions,” RBI said in a notification. The period of the loan shall not exceed 12 months from the date of sanction. Under the bullet repayment scheme, the banks need to maintain loan to value ratio of 75 per cent on the loan amount including the interest. However, if it is not maintained the loan would be treated as a non-performing asset (NPA), RBI added. Also, the interest will be charged to the account on monthly basis but will become due for payment along with principal only at the end of 12 months from the date of sanction, it said.

Expect Revenue Growth At 6-Quarter Low In Q3FY15

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015

NEWS FLASH

23

Infosys third quarter results to be announced today Audi reports record sales in India at 10851 units Consumer durable firms including Haier, Whirlpool, Panasonic, Godrej Appliances and Daikin hike prices by up to 5% Power ministry cancels UMPP bidding; to set-up committee soon CommonFloor.Com receives fresh round of funding from Google Capital.

Slower growth in investment, export-oriented sectors and soft commodity prices to blame, says Crisil Research By A Business Reporter

E

xpect “India Inc.’s revenue growth to slip to a 6-quarter low of 7% on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis in the December 2014 quarter. This tepid show will be due to weak performance of investment-linked sectors, stable currency exchange rates (y-o-y) impacting topline growth of exportoriented sectors, and weak global commodity prices” says Crisil Research. Revenue growth was around 9% in the preceding quarter and 13% in the December 2013 quarter. On the profitability front though, Crisil foresees a marginal uptick in EBITDA margins. Says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, Crisil Research, “Investment driven sectors will drag down growth. For example, volume growth for top 15 cement companies, accounting for 55% of industry volumes, will decelerate to 5% in Q3

from 9% in the first half of the year. Capital goods manufacturers, continuing to grapple with weak order inflows, are likely to report a 9% yo-y decline in revenues. While construction companies will report a slight uptick in topline growth, growth will still lag aggregate corporate India revenue growth.” IT service providers are expected to report 10-11% revenue growth yo-y (in dollar terms) in Q3, similar to the growth recorded in each of the preceding 6 quarters. However, due to lack of currency tailwinds, rupee revenue growth will be far lower than in 2013-14. Cotton yarn spinners will be hurt by weak export demand from China and lower yarn prices, but ready-made garment exporters will continue to do well due to healthy growth in volumes. The rapid slide in global commodity prices will hurt topline growth of steel, petrochemical, manmade fibres, and chemical producers. Aluminium, though, will buck the trend, reporting over 30% topline growth led by better utilisation of new capacities and higher realisations. Among domestic consumption-oriented sectors, automobile revenues are forecast to grow ~7% (propelled by higher domestic sales of medium & heavy

commercial vehicles). Others forecast to report above average topline growth include FMCG (realisationled), telecom (spike in data usage), and pharmaceuticals. Crisil Research expects aggregate EBITDA margins to improve by 2550 bps y-o-y in Q3FY15. Ajay Srinivasan, Director, Crisil Research, said, “We expect automobiles, cement, roads, and telecom to outperform. Margins may rise 70 bps in automobiles, propelled by commercial and passenger vehicle segments, while margins of component companies could expand by around 120 bps due to higher utiilisation levels and lower input costs. EBITDA margins of road developers are likely to jump 350-450 bps due to a rise in operational BOT (build operate transfer) projects, while surging data revenues and control over marketing costs will lift telecom operators’ margins by 140 bps. On the other hand, despite softer crude oil prices, profitability gains could be limited for companies with raw materials linked to the crude chain, due to losses booked on inventory previously procured. Central power utilities, coal, IT, complex fertiliser and paper companies are expected to report lower margins.”

Slow Growth In Global Trade, Says World Bank By Lalit K Jha

I

n the aftermath of the economic crisis, there has been slow growth in global trade, the World Bank has said. In the year 2012 and 2013, the global trade expanded by less than 3.5%, which is well below the precrisis average annual rate of seven percent, holding back developing country growth in recent years, the World Bank said in a latest report released yesterday. In the latest edition of Global Economic Prospects, the Bank said

weak demand, mainly in investment but also in consumer demand, is one of the main causes of the deceleration in trade growth. With high-income countries accounting for some 65% of global imports, the lingering weakness of their economies five years after the crisis suggests that weak demand continues to adversely impact the recovery in global trade, it said. However, long-term trends have also slowed trade growth, including the changing relationship between trade and income. Specifically, world trade has be-

come less responsive to changes in global income because of slower expansions of global supply chains and a shift in demand from tradeintensive investment to less tradeintensive private and public consumption, the Bank said. The analysis done by the World Bank finds that these long- term factors affecting trade will also shape the behaviour of trade flows in the years ahead—in particular, that the expected recovery in global growth is not likely to be accompanied by the rapid growth in trade flows observed in the pre-crisis years. Noting that weakness in global import demand has contributed about one percentage point to the reduction in the growth in global trade, the report said some five years after the global financial crisis, global GDP is about 4.5% below its pre-crisis trend, with even larger shortfalls in the United States and the Euro Area (8% and 13%, respectively). This soft demand in high-income countries is reflected in the weakness of their import volumes. The report said two factors have contributed to declining sensitivity. First, the rapid integration of global supply chains—which had triggered rapidly rising shipments of intermediate goods across borders—has settled and the growth in cross-border shipments within supply chains has slowed. Second, since the great recession, the recovery in investment, which has particularly large import content, has lagged behind other demand components (eg consumption and government ex-

penditure), it said. Observing that trade will provide less support for global growth in the medium-term, the report said rising global demand will lift trade also. However, even as global GDP growth recovers, global trade growth is likely to be permanently lower than in the 1990s when supply chains began to rapidly expand across borders and were accompanied by strong investment growth, it said. Auto Industry To Face Stress Due To Stricter Regulatory Norms By A Business Reporter

I

ndia's auto industry is likely face pressure over the next few years on account of various factors including tough regulatory norms pertaining to safety and emissions. The pressure would also increase because of emergence of new product segments, says a report based on the findings of 'KPMG Global Automotive Executive Survey'. "The Indian automotive industry is likely to face further pressure on two fronts: while on one front the regulatory norms are likely to get tougher on safety, emission norms, fuel efficiency, manufacturing defects and product recalls," KPMG India Head Automotive sector Rajeev Singh said. "On the other hand, the product life cycles are getting shortened, there are frequent changes in product ownership and likely emergence of new product segments," he added. There is also going to be a phenomenal growth in the secondhand car market in the country and it will be one of the key success factors for players who enable easy exchange to increase their market share, Singh said. "The industry is also likely to see huge investments in the next couple of years. It is one of those distinctive markets where there is a huge potential at both ends of the pyramid; the small cars and high end luxury cars," he added. According to the survey, there is also a likelihood of increased prominence of women customers, he said. Besides, the Indian companies will be investing in two powertrain technologies over the next five years: 33% in downsizing and optimisation of internal combustion engines and 27% in fuel cell electrical vehicles. The report says, Brazil, Russia and India are expected to export more than one million vehicles each to other markets in the 3-5 years. Besides, 59% of the total participants in the survey believe that the

market entry barriers or restrictions conditions in India will decrease. "Governmental interventions in India will also decrease according to the executives surveyed. Indian auto companies are expected to invest in new plants and module/platform strategies while there are no plans for investing in battery (pack/cell) technologies," the survey report said. Globally, sales potential of the basic and small car segment is set to accelerate over the next five years, it said. The survey, now in its 16th consecutive year, also found out that for the next five years, respondents see consumers still fixated on traditional product issues that will drive their purchasing decisions.

Gadkari Calls Upon Shipping Industry To Develop Idea Bank By A Business reporter

U

nion Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, yesterday called upon industry barons to develop a bank of ideas through which their knowledge, suggestions, innovative plans, facts and figures could be collected and sent to his Ministry. He was delivering the inaugural address at the India Maritime 2015 Exhibition and Conference organised jointly by Ministry of Shipping and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The Minister assured the house that all useful suggestions would be considered positively for the overall development of India’s maritime sector. Gadkari also declared that his government’s visionary Sagar Mala project would lead to holistic development in many areas including ship repair, shipbuilding and port facilities.

I don’t see the genre while choosing work for TV and films but the story and the script is important for me, even my character is not that significant to me compared to the director, which in this instance is a veteran cinematographer who has directed hit horror films like ‘1920 Evil Returns’ and ‘Ragini MMS2’. And also it’s a great honour to make my debut with a top star like Bipasha Basu.

interesting and will hold their attention completely. Who is your character in the film? I play a entrepreneur called Kabir who is in love with one of the conjoined twins called Sanjana played by Bipasha Basu. He trusts and love Sanjana implicitly and he never goes against her.

What was your experience like? I had a technical wizard like Bhushan Patel who was convinced about his script and his script sense is perfect. Initially I was happy to be paired opposite a top star and a beauty like Bipasha. Later I became nervous since I had to play her husband and I had to

What is so special about ‘Alone’? It’s a remake of a Thai film which I had seen and liked. Even though I have worked in television for 10 years, I may be wrong but the present script has been changed to suit Indian audiences and I am sure they will like it because the script is so strong and

ilmmaker Prakash Jha, known for serious big screen outings like 'Aarakshan' and 'Satyagraha', is happy to produce a non-star cast comedy 'Crazy Cukkad Family' as he wants to back small films and fresh talent. 'Crazy Cukkad Family', directed by debutant Ritesh Menon, stars singer-composer Swanand Kirkire in his acting debut and Shilpa Shukla of 'Chake De' fame. “Over the years I have done my films but also supported small films. It is time that new talent and content driven cinema gets the focus. The industry has been taken over by the corporates and they don't invest and develop. They are always into big stars and projects. “I felt I should give chance to younger talent. It is a very conscious decision that I will keep making movies which are my forte but there are others whose stories I like so I will support them,” Jha told PTI in an interview. The director said he was attracted to the relatable and entertaining story of the film. “ 'Crazy Cukkad Family' is a small budget and non-star cast film. It is very entertaining comedy. The film is about values and a family, where people keep running after the golden egg and eventually become 'cukkads'. It is a sweet, light-hearted story with fresh bunch of people, who are very talented. The

We hear Bipasha made you comfortable on the sets? Yes. Especially since we had many erotic scenes in the film. The constant retakes of such scenes made me uncomfortable, but Bipasha comforted me saying that this was not her first kissing scene as she already has done such scenes before and she reassured me constantly.

Are you friends with Bipasha now? Yes. Especially since the intimate scenes were shot on a three camera set up in front of the entire unit. I was nervous because I can’t disappoint a one-take artiste like Bipasha. Gradually we became friends and compatible in front of the camera. What’s the secret of your six-pack? I work out and go to gym regularly and was even inspired by fitness icon Bipasha Basu.

situations are very real in the movie," he said. Praising Swanand's performance in the film, Jha said, “He is so natural. He has done a lot of theatre so he is not new to acting. He has done a great job in the movie. He was so apt for the role. You will be surprised to see him,” Jha said. 'Crazy Cukkad Family', produced by Prakash Jha Productions and also starring Zachary Coffin, Nora Fatehi, Kushal Punjabi Jugnu Ishiqui and Anushka Sen, is set to release on January 16.

Time to slow down for Arjun Actor Arjun Kapoor, who had a busy 2014 with his three back-to-back releases, will now take a small break after his upcoming movie ‘Tevar’ hits the box-office

rjun, 29, was a part of gangster drama 'Gunday', love story '2 States' and comedy movie 'Finding Fanny' in 2014. “I haven't signed any film yet because I did not like much stuff offered to me. As an actor you should push the envelope. I have done five films, so obviously now I want to try different characters and work with new directors. “I have been on a bullet train and done many films in two years and it is also not healthy for the audience beyond a point,” Arjun said while promoting 'Tevar' in the Capital. Arjun, who made his debut with 'Ishaqzaade' in 2012, said his break will not be a long one but he feels it is important for him to unwind himself. “I will not call it a sabbatical but after 'Tevar' I want to

calm myself down so that I can reassess how I would want to approach my work. It is a nice time in my life. I have got enough love and appreciation for the work I did last year. I have been constantly working. It is nice to slow down,” he said. With 'Tevar', which is releasing on next Friday, Arjun has teamed up with his father Boney Kapoor and uncle Sanjay Kapoor for the first time. The actor said working in a home production was no different than any other project. “When an actor goes to a film set, he does not think that he is in his home production or any other film. You just work for the director, but 'Tevar' was an emotional journey. Life has come to a full circle. Our home productions are always larger-thanlife and are made on a big scale. 'Tevar' is also the same," he said.

n a career that straddled five decades, Shakti Samanta directed numerous hits. Samanta was a man of few words with people he was not comfortable with. A straightforward man, his clarity of thought could never be disputed. Remarkably, this unassuming man had been responsible for spinning skeins of cinematic magic. Born in Burdwan, now in West Bengal on January 13, 1924, he grew up at his uncle’s place in Dehradun. At an early age, he was smitten by the acting bug . With little money and big dreams, he took up the job of a school teacher in Dapoli. He would make a weekly trip to Mumbai. He made his rounds of the studios when Bombay Talkies was on top and as it turned out, Bombay Talkies at the time was overflowing with Bengalis. It was Ashok Kumar, then the top star at Bombay Talkies, who advised him to become an assistant director and not chase stardom. After a few odd jobs, be became an assistant director to writer Vrajendra Gaur who was making a film called Kasturi in 1953. Gaur and Samanta shared a tremendous rapport and Gaur did not direct a film again despite Kasturi doing well. He passed on the subsequent offers to Shakti and that’s how he [Shakti] got his break as an independent director with 'Bahu' (1955). Vrajendra Gaur’s and Shakti’s friendship was well-known in the film industry and Gaur went on to write 20 films for Shakti including 'China Town', 'Bahu', 'Howrah Bridge', 'Singapore', 'Jaali Note',

'Sawan Ki Ghata', 'Insaan Jaag Utha', 'Kati Patang', 'Anuraag', 'The Great Gamble', 'Charitraheen', etc. Shakti started his independent career with 'Bahu' but it was with the super-hit crime thriller 'Howrah Bridge' [1958] with Madhubala seductively swaying to 'Aaiye meherban' and Shammi Kapoor playing a double role in China Town [1962], that Shakti rose to stardom. The dialogue "Mike ka doosra naam China Town..." is popular to this day. 'Howrah Bridge' and 'China Town' established Samanta's credentials as a filmmaker. Once Shakti Samanta's choice of hero signalled the status of Bollywood's leading men. In the 1960s, he helmed a string of successful films with Shammi Kapoor in the lead; but after Samanta's 'Aradhana' became a blockbuster in 1969, he made films with the new superstar Rajesh Khanna. And after Khanna's career fizzled, Samanta segued to working with Amitabh Bachchan in 'The Great Gambler' (1979) and 'Barsaat Ki Ek Raat' (1981). It is to Samanta’s credit that could work his alchemy even with newcomers. Sharmila ('Kashmir Ki Kali'), Rajesh Khanna ('Aradhana'), Helen ('Howrah Bridge') and Moushumi got their first taste of Hindi film stardom, thanks to his films. It was Shakti Samanta's 'Anuraag' that made her a star. Shakti’s career can be divided into three parts. Crime and action films like 'Howrah Bridge' and 'China Town' followed by musicals like 'Kashmir Ki Kali', 'Sawan Ki Ghata', 'An Evening In Paris'. Third was emotional dramas with 'Aradhana'.

Prakash Jha is a debutant director’s dream: Ritesh Menon

D

irector Ritesh Menon says it was a dream to have filmmaker Prakash Jha as the producer of his first film 'Crazy Cukkad Family' as he gave him creative freedom. The comedy film, starring lyricist-composer Swanand Kirkire in his lead acting debut, 'Chak De!' actress Shilpa Shukla, Kushal Punjabi and Siddharth Sharma is produced by 'Rajneeti' director's Prakash Jha Productions. Ritesh said he could not believe his luck when Jha approved his script and decided to back it. "Prakash Jha is every new director's dream. I had taken my script to many producers but it did not work out but one day I sent it to Prakash Jha office and I got a call in the afternoon itself that he wanted to meet me to discuss the film. "He gave me full freedom to work the way I wanted to. He was always involved but never interfered. He trusted me," Ritesh told PTI. 'Crazy Cukkad Family' is a humorous take on the inter-personal relationships within a family. The director developed the story from an idea by Punjabi. Menon had not intended it to make a comedy but it turned out to be one because of its entertaining script. "I knew it was an

entertaining story, I had narrated it to some of my friends and they enjoyed it so I felt like telling the story but I did not think like I had to develop it as a comedy. The situations, dialogues and characters in the film are funny. I am hopeful people will accept the movie," he said. Ritesh credited his footing in the industry by assisting cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan with whom he worked in films like 'Tahaan' and 'Before the Rains'. "Whatever I am today, it is because of Santosh Sivan. He has been a great mentor. He used to make me write a couple of scenes every day," Ritesh said. PTI

t’s quite enlightening reading comments about films — particularly the big ones — on social media. They are often more nasty than the most scathing reviews. Under the cloak of invisibility or anonymity the medium offers, people can say what they please. Regular reviewers have to worry about offending stars and the publication or website being blacklisted by powerful production houses, the general public has nothing to stop them from ripping into the biggest hits. They have spent their money and time because they were promised entertainment, they have the right to criticise if they want to. The old word-of-mouth is now word of social media. Which is why the major production houses flood the cinemas with prints, mop up on opening weekend and don’t let the reactions come in the way of ticket sales. They know that to pan a film people have to see it, so it’s money in the bank anyway. If they don’t like the film, that’s just too

Sridevi, who made her Bollywood comeback in 2012 with 'English Vinglish', has collaborated with her husband on films like 'Mr India', 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja' and 'Judaai'. Boney, 59, said that after the release of 'Tevar', which hits theatres this Friday, he will focus on Sridevi's film. “My immediate next film is with my wife. She will star in the movie. It will be a women-oriented subject but very different from 'English Vinglish'. It will be of another genre," Boney told PTI. Resuming the day at 71 for one, India added 271 runs from 90 overs to end the third day on 342 for five in reply to Australia's mammoth 572 for seven declared, thanks to the twin centuries by Kohli (140 not out) and Rahul (110). Kohli notched up his tenth Test ton in his 33rd match and also broke a few records during the course of his unbeaten knock. The Kohli-Rahul duo shared 141 runs for the third wicket to lead the Indian fightback on an SCG pitch which offered some turn for the spinners. At stumps, Kohli and Wriddhiman Saha (14 not out) at

Australian Greg Chappell had scored a century each in his first two innings as captain against the West Indies at Brisbane in 1975. The 26-year-old Kohli also became the highest Indian run getter in a Test series in Australia, surpassing batting legend Rahul Dravid who scored 619 runs from eight innings in the 2003-04 tour. Kohli, who came into this match with an aggregate of 499 runs, has now totalled 639 from seven innings in this series. The only blemish of the Indian captain in his innings today was the dropped catch by Steven Smith at second slips in the post-lunch session when Kohli was on 59. The 22-year-old Rahul, in only his second Test, played a solid innings though he survived two close calls, including a relatively easy dropped catch by Smith of the bowling of off-spinner Nathan Lyon in the morning session when he was on 46. India were going strong with Rahul and Kohli having settled well and looking to further their partnership and ease India into the match in the final session. But the former was out quickly, top-edging Starc as the bowler gleefully accepted the return catch.

29 Relieved with my innings: Lokesh Rahul

SYDNEY: Criticised for failing in his debut Test in Melbourne, young Indian batsman Lokesh Rahul was relieved to score his maiden century in his second game to help India stay afloat on the third day of the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia, here today. The 22-year-old Karnataka batsman could only muster 3 and 1 in the first and second innings respectively in the Boxing Day Test but struck a welldeserved ton at the SCG, while opening the innings. "It feels good. It was not the debut that I had expected in Melbourne. I came out thinking this is my first game and I am very pleased with the way I batted today," said Rahul at the press conference. "Batting up in the order gave me little more time. And it was a conscious effort to spend some time in the middle and get those early nerves off. The wicket was pretty slow and the Australian bowlers made it harder by giving nothing away. I just kept telling myself to bat through the first session so that I can come out in second session and score more runs," he added. Rahul had batted at number six and three respectively in the two

innings in the third Test and had come a cropper, falling to top-edges on both occasions. But the first innings hundred at SCG, especially after dropping a simple catch on the opening day, came as a confidence booster. "I am more relieved than being proud of myself. It was a nightmare debut and it didn't make my life easier coming to this second Test.

YDNEY: Australian coach Darren Lehmann said he is disappointed with the fielding efforts put by his team in the last two matches after skipper Steve Smith dropped two crucial catches to let India off the hook on the third day of the final cricket Test. Smith today put down two tough catches and gave lives to centurions KL Rahul (110) and India skipper Virat Kohli (140 not out) as the visitors finished the third day at 342/5, still trailing by 230 runs. "It was good overall but it was only the captain today wasn't it?" Lehmann said jokingly. "But yes it was disappointing to not take those chances. They are tough chances, but you still have to take those on a wicket like this where we needed to speed the game up today. We need to take those chances and that's now two Tests in a row. There is still a lot of time in this game. "We fielded pretty well last summer. It's been two odd Test matches to be honest, because we fielded quite well in the first two. Now we have to create more chances to get 20 wickets and that's not what you need on such kind of wickets. We've got to make sure we take those chances and we haven't." Rahul was given a life on 46 when Smith put him down off Shane Watson as he got distracted by the Spider-Cam running backwards. The opener went on to score 110 runs, his maiden Test ton. Smith later again dropped Kohli on 59 off Mitchell Starc and the In-

It's not ideal where it was positioned for that particular ball. But I actually like watching it and we've just got to get the positioning right when the bowler's bowling. "It is great for the people at home and for entertainment throughout the day but we've just got to make sure it's positioned right more than anything else. On that particular occasion it was probably in the wrong spot," Lehmann opined. Talking about four hundreds each from Smith and Kohli in this series, Lehmann said: "They're pretty good, aren't they? Virat's played re-

ally well today and so did young Rahul. Steve Smith's been excellent, it's been a hundred fest this Test series. The way they've played, the way they have led their sides - it's exciting times ahead for both countries." There was a little turn and uneven bounce when Nathan Lyon came on to bowl, but not enough to trouble the Indian batsmen. The Australian coach though expects it to change as the match progresses. "It's a good wicket. I think it'll break up and spin and go up and down until the end of the game. But that depends on how the game moves ahead. We will probably have to be pretty aggressive to set something up, but only time will tell," he said.

Bangladeshi cricketer Hossain remanded in actress rape case D

H A K A : Bangladesh cricketer Rubel Hossain, who has been named in the country's World Cup squad, was behind bars today after being remanded in custody over allegations that he raped an actress.A magistrate in the capital Dhaka delivered the order after 19-year-old Naznin Akter Happy lodged a complaint of "rape" and a "false promise of marriage" against the cricketer last month. The court's decision puts a huge question mark over the 24-yearold's appearance in the next month's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after selectors

picked him in the 15-man squad last weekend."The metropolitan magistrate court rejected his bail plea... He was sent to prison pending the next hearing of the case," deputy commissioner of Dhaka police Anisur Rahman told AFP. No date has been set for the next hearing. Police last month launched a probe after Happy lodged a complaint with police that the fast bowler had backed away from an earlier pledge to marry her after having a monthslong "intimate affair". After hearing the complaint, a court ordered medical tests on Happy and both the alleged victim and Hossain to undergo DNA tests. The scandal has gripped the conservative Muslim-majority country for weeks.

Starc reprimanded for Vijay sendoff D

UBAI: Australian pacer Mitchell Starc was reprimanded for "exaggerated celebration" after dismissing batsman Murali Vijay in the ongoing fourth and final cricket Test in Sydney. "Australia player Mitchell Starc was issued with an official reprimand after committing a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day's play in the fourth Test against India in Sydney on Tuesday," the ICC said in a statement. Starc admitted to a breach of Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which provides that an offence will be committed where a player engages in

"... Conduct that either :(a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute." "After claiming the wicket of Vijay, Starc engaged in an exaggerated celebration in front of the dismissed batsman," the ICC said. "The charge was laid by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Richard Kettleborough of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, Third Umpire Simon Fry from the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires and Fourth Umpire Gerard Abood." Starc accepted the offence and the proposed sanction of an official reprimand and therefore a formal hearing was not required.
