Three days of election duty...and back to teaching the next day By Yatin Ingle
T
he Election Commission (EC) has ordered teachers to be present for three days of election duty from October 13 to 15. The first day, October 13, is a training day. Teachers have to report at 10 am and will finish at 5 pm, even though they already finished one training session on Tuesday and Wednesday. Though the timing of the extended training session on October 13 seems reasonable enough, on the days of An election officer instructs a teacher about the operation of an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at a voting centre. the elections – October 14
Fully ready to respond to Pak provocation: India tells UN By Yoshita Singh
U
NITED NATIONS: India and Pakistan have sparred at the UN over ceasefire violations along the LoC with India making it clear that its armed forces are 'fully ready' to respond to 'provocation'. India also said that the onus of creating a positive environment for normalisation of relations is on Pakistan. War of words between the two countries over the situation at the Line of Control took place yesterday at the UN General Assembly where
India said that it was a "matter of deep regret" that Pakistan violated the ceasefire, in which eight people were killed and several others injured. "It is a matter of deep regret that Pakistan has violated the ceasefire and their unprovoked firing has led to loss of civilian lives on Indian side...Firing on innocent civilians by Pakistan will only hamper normalisation of relations. "The onus of creating a positive environment is on Pakistan which is utterly failing to do so," senior official at the Indian Mission to the UN, Devesh Uttam said on Tues-
day in his right of reply to Pakistan's remarks. The Indian official stressed that everyone must be "assured" that India's armed forces and paramilitary forces are "fully ready and they will respond to provocation". The Indian diplomat was responding to comments made by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Masood Khan when he raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during the 21st plenary meeting of the General Assembly here yesterday. and 15 – teachers will have to report at dawn (5 30 am) and finish their duty only when the Electronic Voting Machines are collected for counting, which can stretch up to 11 pm. Following their two long days at the polls, they will have to report for their teaching duties as usual the next morning. These long hours has alarmed the teachers who have requested the election Continued on pg 12 «
‘Stay overnight’: EC
On Tuesday, the election commission asked male teachers to stay back overnight at polling booths on October 14 so they could report to duty early on October 15. However, the teachers did not take kindly to it and protested against the order. Later the election commission recalled the order and told the teachers they will not have to stay back over night.
Teachers died in Lok Sabha poll duty
During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the principal of a Navi Mumbai school, Vaishali Bhale, and a primary school teacher in Ulhasnagar, Anant Sawale, died while on election duty. They were allegedly denied leave despite complaining of illness.

Says Dr Hozefa A Bhinderwala, Consultant Psychiatrist, speaking about the ill-effects of excessive social networking on young minds Azad Shrivastav | ADC
By Shwetha Kannan
“I
am so thankful that I had a childhood before technology took over” is being “liked” and “shared” on social networking sites. Quite an irony, this is because these very social networking sites where such messages are not only being posted but also liked and shared, are creating havoc in the lives of children who are hooked on to these sites as if their lives depend on them. A case in hand is of a 14-year-old boy whose life has seen a downward trend after he was introduced, at the age of 12, to a social networking site known for being able to reach out to the maximum number of people and is currently a rage among not only the youth but also adults and old people. This boy who was good at academics and used to be quite social, started losing interest in studies as his online presence started increasing. He started spending time in his virtual world rather than interacting with real people in the real world. His relationship with his parents got affected. He started remaining indoors with no interest in any outdoor activity. He started remaining
Dr Hozefa A Bhinderwala and Priyanka Kartari, clinical psychologist, counsellor and psychotherapist, at the Press Club on Wednesday aloof and a result of which was a hit to his self esteem. He started believing that people are ignoring him but the reality was the other way round. All this was because of his addiction to being online. While this is just one case that we are talking about, it would not be surprising if each of us know of someone with similar symptoms
and behavioural issues, because according to Dr Hozefa A Bhinderwala, Consultant Psychiatrist at Global Hospital, Parel, Prince Aly Khan Hospital and Saifee hospital, every household has one member who has a mental problem where the underlying issue is excess use of digital resources. “Every household has one person
who has an impulse control issue with regard to usage of digital resources, be it mobile phones or computers. On an average, I see three to four cases of mental disturbances everyday where uncontrolled use of the internet and other gadgets is one of the major reasons,” said Dr Bhinderwala. Priyanka Kartari, clinical psychologist, counsellor and psychotherapist at Holy Family hospital and Global hospital said, “Fifteen out of 100 children that come to me have issues due to unlimited access to the virtual world. And this is a scary scenario.” Both Kartari and Dr Bhinderwala are of the opinion that having digital etiquette is the need of the hour. “There must be a limit to which children should get access to the internet and to social networking sites. Parents should know what their children are doing online. What content are they looking at and what are they uploading and posting,” said Dr Bhinderwala. Kartari who is handling the case of the 14-year-old boy mentioned above said, “In this case, the parents saw a drop in his academics as he started prioritising his virtual world over the real world and studies. He
started spending more time on the internet than with them. This boy was lucky that his parents caught the symptoms early and sought professional help but not all children are this lucky. Parents give their children a free hand and don't realise the damage they are doing their children till the time they see some drastic changes in their children. So parents too need to watch out. Will they ever allow children to play out for seven to eight hours? No. So why let them be online for long hours? Restrictions put in the right way help. So, parents should also talk to mental health specialists who can guide them on how to keep their children on track without being imposing or curtailing their freedom. Use of the internet and gadgets are a must in today's times but there has to be a limit to its use, else lives get wrecked.” And as far the 14-year-old boy is concerned, he is on therapy and his progress is good, informed Kartari. shwetha.kannan@afternondc.

Bisoi also spoke about the postal assistant exam. He said, “Maharashtra had the largest number of vacancies and the largest number of applicants. There were more than 10,000 applicant this year and that is probably the reason for the delay in results. Besides, a computerised examination is still to take place which will decide the final result.” Bisoi said that the speed post service received 26.1 lakh notices to be delivered from the Election Commissions in Mumbai and Pune. Amid the garbage that accumulates along the bank of the Ganga, men, women, children, animals and birds are seen wading across the river to get from one side to the other.
Clean-up Ganga Will Narendra Modi succeed where Rajiv Gandhi has failed? It is a well-known fact that the Ganga is filthy. It must be having dead bodies of cows, men and women and other animals in addition to the large quantities of poisonous waste flowing down from industrial units along its banks. People piss into the river and wash after defecating. Dead bodies – half burnt – are thrown into the sacred river after the cremation ritual. One fine morning, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi decided to spend money on cleaning up the Ganga. A beginning was made by allocating Rs 400 crore. Various schemes were made, persons were appointed to supervise and take action against industrial units who pollute the Ganga. In no time at all, the money was spent. But the Ganga remained as dirty as ever. Rs 400 crore flowed down the Ganga. Now Narendra Modi wants to get the Ganga cleaned. He has set aside Rs 2,500 crore for the purpose. Evidently, after the money goes down Ganga, he is prepared to spend more. He has put the much mellowed Uma Bharti in charge. She is a very religious person. Evidently she is delighted with the job she has got. It is a dream come true – cleaning the Ganga. There are hundreds of big and small rivers in India. All of them are worshipped by the Hindus. The most sacred river for the Hindus is the Ganga. It is their hope and dream to go to Varanasi and have a dip in the Ganga. There are men and women who want to be in Banaras during the last days of
their life and get cremated on the banks of the Ganga. They believe that if they go see the Ganga and have 'snan' there and do pooja, they will go to heaven after death.
Bollywood’s rush for biopics
Bollywood's most recent undertaking of biopics based on Indian sports personalities is a new trend in the industry. It seems to have picked up from 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' which surprisingly exceeded all expectations for such a dramatic industry. Although few recollect the sporting biopic that actually started it all, the 2012 critically acclaimed 'Paan Singh Tomar', starring Irfan Khan in the eponymous role of an Indian soldier who won gold at the National Games, but circumstances forced him to become a bandit.

After years of borrowing scripts from films around the world, Bollywood is finally looking at its own backyard for inspiration. But after the disaster that was 'Mary Kom' and the rush with which the other titles are being snatched up, there is only dim hope for the outcome. Poor Vishwanathan Anand. He's been on top of his game for decades, yet no one seems to be interested in telling his story. Chess is too slow and too complex for Bollywood.
Halley comes by this Diwali
This Diwali, our celebratory fireworks will be joined by celestial fireworks as the Halley’s Comet makes a brief comeback to our skies on October 21-22, as it barely brushes past our line of sight. Though the real thing is expected only in 2061, what we will see between October 21-22 is debris shed by Halley. Comets are dirty creatures; they leave a trail of cosmic dust behind as they tramp around the Solar System.
After that felicitous tribute to Milkha Singh, Bollywood was waiting for the next star sportsman to surface and, right on time, Mary Kom happened. As soon as it got wind of Kom's incredible Olympics bronze, Bollywood swooped in and obtained the rights to her life story, and out came the abomination of a biopic 'Mary Kom', starring Priyanka Chopra. Now MS Dhoni wants to coproduce a film named after and based on himself, even before he has retired from cricket, and rumour The particles from the comet is Sachin Tendulkar will star in a film stream will enter our based on his life. After al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan's garrison town of Abbottabad, his body was kept in a black bag heavy with 300 pounds of iron chains and dropped in the sea, former CIA Director and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said. After Osama was shot dead, Panetta said, as planned the body of the world's most wanted terrorist was transported by marines flying an Osprey to waiting aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson for his burial by sea. "Bin Laden's body was prepared for burial according to Muslim traditions, draped in a white shroud, given final prayers in Arabic, and then placed inside a heavy black bag," says Panetta who wrote in his latest book 'Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace' which hit the book stores on Tuesday. "Three hundred pounds of iron chains were put inside as well, to ensure that the body would sink," he wrote. "The bagged body was placed on a white table at the rail of the ship; the table was tipped over to drop the body into the sea. It was so heavy that it dragged the table in with it. As the body sank quickly out of sight, the table bobbed on the surface," Panetta said, without identifying the location of the drop.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC's) octroi revenue collection for FY 2014-15 so far, (April to September 2014) has increased by 6.77 per cent from what it had earned in the corresponding period of the last fiscal. But the civic body has to still reach its budget target of Rs 7,800 crore. However, in the last six months (April to September) the civic administration has collected Rs 3,457.93 crore as compared to Rs 3,237.93 crore in last year's corresponding period, an increase of Rs 219.07 crore. An official from the Assessment and Collector department said, “If the trend goes on, it will be possible for us to cross the target by the end of March 2015.” The main reason for the increase in the import this year is due to the rise in the revenue collection for changing market trends, increment in the dollar prices and a decrease in the price of crude oil. Last year, due to the crude oil imports, the civic authority had earned Rs 256.88 crore. It has this year seen an increase
Damaged track on Konkan Rail restored, services still restricted Officials say that services will get back to normal in a couple of days By A Staff Reporter
D
espite hostile weather and difficult terrain, Konkan Railway has successfully restored the railway track which was damaged on Tuesday after a goods train derailed and hampered services on the affected track. Trains were running with restricted speed limits since Wednesday afternoon. Officials said it will take a day or two for the services to normalise. According to officials, totally 160 metres length of the track, which was uprooted
after the derailment, was restored by 3.15 pm on Wednesday. After the inspection by the safety team it was certified as safe to carry out services. All the 12 derailed wagons filled with bags of wheat were unloaded and the 15.000 bags weighing 750 tonnes were stacked up safely nearby. Since the track was damaged and uprooted, it was replaced first and then the wheat bags were removed from the fallen wagons with the help of a crane. The derailment had oc-
curred in between two bridges and two of the derailed wagons were on the bridge. This situation needed to to be handled cautiously in order to avoid any damage to the bridge. The steep and high embankments on either side of the tracks also made it difficult to handle the derailed wagons. Heavy rain in the region also hampered the restoration work for some time. The current status of train services in the affected region is available on the site www.konkanrailway.com or by phone on 022-27587939. Azad Shrivastav | ADC
of Rs 44.98 crore as the profit earned is Rs 301.87 crore. As there is a rise in the capital expenditure over the years, the civic administration has been increasing its octroi collection target every year. From 2006-07, the civic body has managed to complete its target in case of octroi. This year Municipal
Commissioner Sitaram Kunte had said that octroi will remain the primary revenue source for MCGM this financial year. The city's civic administration is the only urban local body in Maharashtra where octroi is collected. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

rime Minister Narendra Modi, who had launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan last week, yesterday lauded the role of industrialist Anil Ambani in cleaning up the area around Churchgate railway station. Ambani was one of the nine celebrities Modi had named to take the clean India campaign forward. "Wonderful effort by Shri Anil Ambani who cleaned the area around Churchgate Station in Mumbai along with his friends," Modi tweeted. Anil Ambani yesterday picked up the broom to clean an area outside the railway station and invited ace boxer Mary Kom, megastar Amitabh Bachchan and tennis player Sania Mirza to join the initiative. Launching the campaign, Modi had named Ambani, cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar and film stars Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra to take the initiative forward. The PM had urged the people to nominate nine more people to join the campaign and take the chain forward, reports PTI. According to another tweet

he Maharashtra Government on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court that it has not yet formulated a new policy on housing since a division bench struck down its policy on allotment of flats under the Chief Minister's discretionary quota early this year. A total of 418 flats under the CM's two per cent housing quota and another 500 flats under the CM's 5 per cent quota are lying vacant as these tenements have not been allotted so far, the government informed a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka, which started dictating its judgement on a PIL filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar. The PIL has alleged irregularities in the housing quota and demanded a probe by a top authority into the issue of allotment of flats under the CM's quota, reports PTI. The court has indicated that it would order appointment of a high court judge for the proposed one-man
committee to investigate the alleged irregularities in the CM's housing quota. The Registrar General had yesterday submitted names of three retired Judges who could be appointed on the committee. However, the court said it would have to obtain their consent before announcing the name of the judge to conduct a probe. The panel would scrutinise all applications for flats from the CM's discretionary quota since 1989 and look for the cases where a single person has got more than one flat (which is illegal). The court said the committee would also go through the affidavits filed with the applications to find out if the persons who got more than one flat had submitted false information. It also asked the state government to submit additional data about the flats taken back
from those who had been allotted more than one flat and also sought information about the FIRs registered against such allottees.

Model’s house robbed by unidentified miscreant By Zuber Ansari
A
29-year-old Russian model and dancer has lodged a complaint with the Amboli police after her ornaments and gadgets worth Rs 3.42 lakh were stolen from her Andheri (West) house when she was out for dinner on Tuesday. According to the complaint, model Zamira Hojaniyazova who has done item songs in a few Bollywood movies including 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti', told the police that an unknown person
had cut the grills of her first floor flat and ransacked her cupboards. Hojaniyazova, who also works as a production controller at Fact Enterprise Limited production house, stays at the Vijay Bharat Housing society located opposite the Kokilaben Hospital in the Four Bungalows area of Andheri. The model stays there alone. The Amboli police said that at 8 pm on Tuesday, Hojaniyazova got a call from her friend for dinner. Hojaniya-
zova left her house at 9 pm for dinner and returned at 1 am to find her house lights switched on. She assumed that she might have left the lights on but when she entered her apartment she found that she had been robbed. Her cupboards had been ransacked and her gold ornaments, dollars and laptop had been stolen. “The robber had cut the grills of the balcony and entered, which is strange as the area is populated. If I would have been in the house, the
robbers might have harmed me. The police should be alert and increase the security of the area,” said Hojaniyazova. The Amboli police have registered a case of house break against unknown persons and are investigating the case. “We are investigating and looking at who could have helped the robber to find out that the occupant of thehouse was out at the particular time,” said API Vishnu Rathod from the Amboli police station.
Murder or suicide?
By Zuber Ansari
A
50-year-old Andheri resident allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan at his residence on Tuesday. Soon after the incident hundreds of neighbours and relatives gathered outside the DN Nagar police station and made known their suspicion that Vitthal Saroge did not commit suicide, but was murdered. Police say that they have not found a suicide note and are inquiring with the family members and neighbours of the deceased. According to the police, the incident occurred at around 4 pm when Vitthal Saroge’s wife was at home and their two children, aged 21 and 24 years, were in the building’s compound with their friends. “Following the allegation, we are inquiring with the
family members and Saroge’s wife, who claims that Saroge has been frustrated for the past few months due to financial issues,” said Rajendra Chavan, senior inspector at DN Nagar police station. “Saroge’s wife also told to police that he wanted to operate his eyes because he could not see properly while driving. But we are waiting for the postmortem report which will confirm the cause of death.” Vittal was an auto driver by profession and lived in the SRA building at Indira Nagar, Andheri (W), along with his wife and two children who are unemployed. Saroge returned home after campaigning for a political party in the locality. His wife was sleeping in the house. He was found hanging with his wife’s dupatta. Saroge’s wife says that she was sleeping and when
she woke up found him hanging from the ceiling fan. “The neighbours and relatives learnt about the incident after the police arrived in the society. They got angry and gathered in the
police station claiming that Saroge was murdered. But as per the preliminary investigation, it appears that it is a clear suicide. An investigation is on,” said another police officer.
Advocate Yusuf Khan, who is representing the PoK man, told ADC, “The copy of HC's order is yet to be uplaoded. We will try our level best to get the copy of the order. But if we don't get the copy, we will produce an affidavit in the court for the same on Thursday.” Advocates Yusuf Khan and Tanveer Nizam filed an application on behalf of Khan in the sessions court on Tuesday. It was mentioned in the
application that Siraj is a PoK resident and PoK is an integral part of India so he can't be charged with Foreigners Act. Also his application requesting Indian citizenship is pending before the central government. He doesn't have any criminal antecedents. His permanent residential address is of Mumbai and he is staying here with his wife (who is an Indian) and his three children.

BJP refrains from HC notice to former CM Chavan responding to Sena barbs MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2014

Notice came after a PIL was filed alleging direct recruitment of sports persons by Chavan in government jobs without following procedure
By Philip Varghese

R
efusing to react to the constant barbs from the Shiv Sena aimed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), union minister for Law and Judiciary Ravi Shankar Prasad clarified that the only agenda for the BJP in the Assembly elections was the development of Maharashtra. He was responding to queries from newspersons yesterday about Sena criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi not paying enough attention to the tense situation at the border with Pakistan. Party president Amit Shah however clarified that the government was giving a tit-for-tat response to Pakistan for its cross border firing. Prasad too added that the government has taken a stern stance against Pakistan. However, addressing a election rally yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra
Ravi Shankar Prasad Modi remarked that the opposition and the Sena were crying hoarse because of the wave generated by him. Responding to the Sena criticism he said that everything on the Pakistan border will be fine soon. However, the Sena continued to taunt the Prime Minister over his 56-inch chest size. In its editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamna', the party has remarked that
one did not need a 56-inch chest size to protect the nation from Pakistan. Replying to queries over the politicisation of Shivaji Maharaj, he reminded the BJP critics that it was the previous NDA government that had named the CST station and Mumbai airport after the Maratha warrior king. He said that in the three months since the BJP-led NDA government has come to power, the state has got AIIMS for Vidarbha, IIM for Pune, Mumbai-Bengaluru economic corridor. Prasad stated that the World Bank has reported that the growth rate of the country in this period has risen from 4.4 per cent during the previous Congress-led UPA regime to 6.5 to seven per cent now. He added that the BJP will bring Maharashtra’s glory back by tackling farmers’ issues and strengthening sugar factories and cooperative movements.
Modi-led BJP govt has stabbed farmers in the back, says Pawar
I
n what can spell trouble for former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued notice to Chavan and other respondents after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed alleging direct recruitment of sports persons in government jobs by him under sports quota without following procedure. This comes as the court was hearing the petition by Sports and Physical Development Association (SPEDA) which has challenged appointments made in 2011 alleging that Chavan directly recruited 12 sports persons in various posts such as deputy collector, deputy superintendent of police and tehsildar. “The 12 appointees were either related to ministers or known to them, and we seek cancellation of these appointments as the due procedure was not followed in approving them. As per the rules and regulations for the
Prithviraj Chavan appointment of sports persons in government jobs, the state had to first issue an advertisement inviting applications. They are then scrutinised and after personal interviews, recruitment is made through Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC),” argued Gunaratan Sadavarte, advocate for the petitioner. He further contended, “The CM appointed eight sports persons in class-I category and four in class-II category on October 4, 2011. Without following any procedure, the CM's office is-
sued a press note on October 4, 2011, saying these appointments had been made. Apart from violating rules and regulations, these appointments are contrary to the Supreme Court judgment in Umadevi versus state of Karnataka case. There cannot be a back-door entry as far as government recruitments are concerned.” After hearing the petitioner, the division bench of Justice N H Patil and Justice B P Colabawalla issued notice to Chavan which is returnable after six weeks. “We seek a clarification on whether it (government) had a policy by which the chief minister directly recruited sports persons in government jobs without following the proper procedure. If you have a policy of the CM directly recruiting sports persons in government services, then place it before us. We will see if the policy is in consonance with the rules and regulations prescribed,” the bench said. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in PTI
Stopping of sugar exports, revoking subsidy to cane growers by the Centre, triggers outburst
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar
By A Special Correspondent
T
aking on the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, the Nationalist Congress Party president, Sharad Pawar accused the Centre of betraying the farmers by banning the export of sugar and revoking the subsidy for sugarcane growers.
Pawar said, “BJP, during the campaign for Lok Sabha elections, promised good days ahead. People voted for BJP and Narendra Modi has become the prime minister. But in the last three months, the Modi government has stabbed the farmers in their backs by stopping the export of sugar and revoking the
subsidy to cane growers”. The former Union agriculture minister claimed that farmers in Uttar Pradesh realised this, and that was why BJP bit the dust in that state in the recent by-elections. Farmers are not beggars to be satisfied with this meagre hike of Rs 10, he added. The UPA government had granted a loan waiver of Rs 70,000 crore for the farmers, which was an unparallelled move. Referring to Modi's jibe that Pawar was scared of contesting Lok Sabha election this time and opted for Rajya Sabha membership instead, the NCP chief said, “Modi may not know that I have contested 14 elections, seven each for Assembly and Lok Sabha till now and got elected”. On the breaking of alliance with Congress, Pawar alleged that the state Congress leaders did not want it to continue, and they declared the first list of candidates even when the seat-sharing talks were underway. Pawar did not criticise Shiv Sena in his speech, but targeted both BJP and Congress.

ment officials resorted to strict checking of vehicles. Gangakhed Police intercepted the Scorpio vehicle and seized the amount kept in two bags. The driver of the vehicle, who has been identified as Krushna Hazare, claimed that the clothes belonged to an NCP leader, reports PTI. The information was passed onto sub-divisional
police officer Shankar Kangare who ordered that the vehicle, which was intercepted when it was heading towards Latur from Parbhani, be brought to the police station. Rokde said that the case has been transferred to the election department and further action would be initiated after its opinion. No case has been registered as yet, he said.

itting MLA from Anushakti Nagar Constituency and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state spokesperson Nawab Malik on Wednesday has taken responsibility to campaign for his younger brother Abdul Rashid (Kaptan) Malik from the Kalina Constituency who is in the fray on a NCP ticket against sitting Congress MLA Kripashankar Singh. Kalina was part of Trombay, the old constituency of Nawab Malik. When Trombay was split into two constituencies – Kalina and Anushakthi Nagar – Nawab Malik was given Anushakthi Nagar and Kripashankar Singh got Kalina. Though Nawab Malik was not too happy with the choice, he won the seat and will continue to fight from the same constituency this time as well. As Congress and NCP parted ways, Nawab Malik got the opportunity to field his brother Kaptan Malik in Kalina. Though he is not directly fighting against Singh, political observers believe that it is an indirect fight between Singh and Nawab Malik.

NCP leader Nawab Malik with younger brother Abdul Rashid (Kaptan) Malik. Kaptan Malik is a first timer but is seen as very aggressive in his campaign in Kalina. With his brother Nawab Malik taking the lead in the poll drive by visiting various parts of Kalina, the campaign has gained momentum. According to Nawab Malik, “People of Kalina remember what I have done for them earlier and hopefully they they will extend support to my brother Kaptan Malik. I don't want to comment on direct or indirect fight, it is people's choice whom they
decide to vote for.” It was interesting to watch Nawab Malik campaigning in Kalina as people thronged the streets to see their previous leader. “He has served the people of this constituency earlier. The support I get here is largely because of him. I have also been a corporator here earlier, and people remember the good work done by me,” said Kaptan Malik. Nawab Malik kick started the campaign for Kaptan with a padyatra from Kalina Naka, followed by public meetings
in three places – Vakola, Kalina and BKC. His effort, Nawab Malik believes, will benefit his brother Kaptan, who is a first timer. While on the other hand, three time sitting MLA from Kalina constituency and one time MLC Kripashankar Singh said: “I don't think that it is a fight between me and Nawab Malik. I will fight on the basis of work which I had done in my constituency. Nawab Malik is campaigning for his brother which is natural.”

SUSHMA IN SANGLI... Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is garlanded by BJP workers during an election rally near Sangli on Wednesday.
ccording to a perception survey of voters conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Daksh across 288 Assembly constituencies in the state, there is a huge gap between the voters’ expectations on governance issues and the performance of legislators. The average performance rating of legislators as perceived by voters was rated at 5.28 on a scale of 10, while the average importance of issues was rated at 7.52. The top pressing issues for voters have been security for women (5.2), eradication of corruption (4.68) and infla-
tion (4.88), waste management (5.28) and Defence (5.66); water, electricity, roads, food, education, health followed among 35 other issues. One of the significant findings of the report has been that voters gave last priority to bribery by political parties while casting their vote. The survey also found out that people gave more importance to trustworthiness of the candidate than other factors like the party, religion and other issues. The chief ministerial candidate, caste and religion came fourth and fifth on the agenda. While issues of distribution of money, liquor and gifts came last on the agenda of voters.

What is Pakistan up to? akistan would like to see the next P assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir be a total flop. Assembly elections have been held in Kashmir with great success. Attempts have been made in those elections by anti-Indian elements in Kashmir like the separatists to dissuade people from going to polling booths. People have defied threats and voted. Thanks to total participation by the people — ignoring threats — elections in Kashmir have been held successfully. Delhi has been claiming in international forums that the successful holding of polls and the formation of an assembly show that Kashmiris are happy to be in India. It is possible that Pakistan is thinking of a limited war-like operations in Kashmir — along the international border? Pakistan has been targeting dozens of Indian army posts and also some 26 villages in Kashmir for the last few days. What it has done is a well calculated move. Many Kashmiris have been injured in Pak firing and half a dozen have died. Pakistan has been able to provoke India to act. And like an aggreieved party, it has gone to the UN and complained. Evidently it has not got the expected relief from the world organisation. Actually it was disappointed by the advice given to it that it should try diplomatic methods to resolve the issue. Pakistan is not likely to give up its dangerous operations along the border. Domestic discontent might force the government to accept a suggestion by the army to finally start a mini war in Kashmir.

S you read this column the muchtalked-about elections for Maharashtra State Assembly are just six days away. The most lacklustre campaign for the elections would come to a grinding halt on the 13th evening, i.e. only after four days. The entire exercise of electioneering has offered to the state, particularly the city of Mumbai. If at all Mubaikars received anything, that is the revival of the hatred between Marathi and Gujarati speaking communities, those have been living together peacefully for over five decades now. This was most uncalled for. Yes, there was a sense of hatred amongst Marathi and Gujarati speaking people about each other, when the Fazal Ali Commission, appointed by the Centre for the task of reorganization of states, opined in 1956 that Gujarat, so far part of the huge Mumbai State be separated and Mumbai remains that capital of the new state to be named Maharashtra. Parts of the erstwhile Central Province and the Hyderabad State were also annexed to Maharashtra. Gujarati speaking people, who were settled in Mumbai and its periphery and had established businesses and industry, opposed this plan tooth and nail and demanded Mumbai to be made a Union Territory. A huge and bitter agitation broke out to oppose Gujaratis. Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed, that waged a fight for over four years and finally forced the Centre to bow to the wishes of the Marathi speaking people. The hatred between the two lingual communities was at its peak in 1960, when two separate states, Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed. Another angle to sharpen the sense of hatred was that Morarji Desai, a tough administrator, was then the Chief Minister of Mumbai State and under his instructions, an agitating mob was fired at in which 105 agitators lost their lives.

Gujaratis. The co-existence was natural as it fitted the need of the hour. Many Gujaratis, during the time, participated in the socio-cultural activities of Maharashtra and also entered political arena. Many Gujaratis, including Rajni Patel, H.M. Trivedi, B. A. Desai, Shantilal Shah and Dr. Shanti Patel contested elections at various levels and won them also quite a few times. Many Gujarati plays were adapted in Marathi and vice versa. In short, the two communities gelled well and their socio-cultural fabric further strengthened. This went on fine till the grand alliance between Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party broke down like a pack of cards on the eve of the final date for filing nominations for the Assembly elections. The BJP announced the divorce, the general feeling that erupted in the minds of the Marathi speaking people was that it was the brainchild of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP's new party presi-

‘The greater your love, the greater your moral’ O
NCE a western seeker of truth went to a sage in China and said to him, “I have come to learn from you what truth is.” The sage said, “Many of your missionaries come to us here and teach your faith. Why do you come to me?” “Well,” he said, “what they teach about is God. We know about God; but now I come to you to ask you about the mystery of life.” The sage said, “If you know God, then that is all there is to be known, there is nothing more. That is all the mystery there is.” There is the question of the mystic's conception of Christ. Do we not know that one person is better than another, and is it not true that God is in man? If that is true, the mystic says, what objection is there if one person calls Christ God, and if the other believes Christ to be man? If God is in man, then if Christ is called God, what does it matter? And if Christ is called man, it only raises man, whom God has created, to that stature. Both have their reasons, and both are right; yet they oppose each other. Some object to Christ being called divine; but if divinity is not sought in man, then in what shall we seek God? Can divinity be found
in the tree, in the plant, in the stone? Yes indeed, God is in all; but at the same time, it is in man that divinity is awakened, that God is awakened, that God can be seen. The tolerance of the mystic is different. The people of a certain nation, race or religion may say, “In Jesus Christ, we see the Lord.” Under that name, they recognize their ideal. People of other countries have seen their divine ideal in Buddha. For their consolation and in support of their ideal, they can all find
MATTER & SPIRIT in history the name of someone who has once existed. The Muslim says that Muhammad is the object of his worship, the Hindu says Krishna. As long as they have not realized the spirit of their ideal, then they will dispute, quarrel, and fight. They will say, “My teacher is great,” “Mine is greater still.” But they do not see that it is one and the same spirit, manifesting in greater excellence. We exalt the teacher to the extent that we have understood him, but we do not exalt him enough if we call him by a certain name and thus limit him to a
had won all 11 seats in Mumbai and the nearby Thane district with handsome margin. The situation would be drastically different this time. Even as both the warring partners of the erstwhile alliance of 25 years would eat into each other's votes, Congress and the NCP would be the natural gainers.
Plot to divide Maharashtra For me, it is not a matter of real concern as to who is benefitted and who is not. In every election, there are long standing demands and reasons that affect the voting pattern. At the same time some incidents, those erupt at the last minute also make a deep impact on the people's mind and many times force them to vote for a different party. In 1980 Lok Sabha elections, the sudden rise in the onion prices all over the nation changed the voting pattern and Janata Party lost the election. There is every possibility that the fear about Modi and Shah would plot to divide Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai and that if BJP comes to power, it would mean that the state would be hereafter ruled from Ahmedabad and not Mumbai, would play magic on the minds of Marathi speaking voters and the vote would go against BJP. Shiv Sena, on the other hand, would stand to gain if Marathi votes, that seems to be so far divided between all five main contenders, is consolidated in favour of Shiv Sena. The party, in that case, stands to cross 120-mark. Whatever may be the result of the elections, all those who care for the unity of the people of the state, should ensure that the social fabric of the state is not torn for election gains. The game of playing with fire often results in burning your own fingers. Maharashtra is considered to be mini-India. If the social climate in this state is disturbed, it would have wide-spreading effect on the entire nation. It is therefore, for Modi to act quickly and swiftly and clarify vehemently that there is no plan to divide Maharashtra, including Vidarbha. Modi also needs to clarify that he, Shah or anyone else from Gujarat or any other state would not interfere in the matters of Maharashtra, notwithstanding which party wins the elections. Will Modi take the initiative, that too before people make up their mind? Not only s the result of the elections but the future of social harmony depend on it. @BharatkumarRaut certain part of the world. However, when we see the unlimited we can call him by all names and say, “You are Krishna, you are Christ, and you are Buddha,” just as the loving mother can call her child, “my prince.” She can give the most beautiful names to her child. Once four little girls were disputing. One said, “My mother is better than yours.” The second girl said, “My mother is better than your mother.” So, they were arguing and being quite disagreeable to one another. But someone who was passing by said to them, “It is not your mother or their mother, it is the mother who is always the best. It is the mother’s quality, her love and affection for her children.” This is the point of view of the mystic in regard to the divine ideal. The moral principle of the mystic is the love principle. He says, “The greater your love, the greater your moral. If we are forced to be virtuous according to a certain principle, a certain regulation, certain laws or rules, then that is not real virtue. It must come from the depths of our heart; our own heart must teach us the true moral.” Thus the mystic leaves morality to the deepening of the heart quality. The mystic says that the more loving someone's heart is, the greater is his morality. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

PRIME Minister Narendra Modi during his election campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra is using the name of great king and warrior Shivaji Maharaj to suit his political intentions and is misguiding the people. The fact is that in the history books of Gujarat, Shivaji Maharaj has been termed as the 'looter' and plunderer of the treasury of Surat but which was the good cause at that time due to bad conditions of Maharashtra and to fight the Mughal empire. Till today Gujarat does not celebrate Shivaji Jayanti and considers the king as a 'looter' which is a great insult to the warrior and the people of the state. I strongly feel that Maharashtra is the number one state in the country and much better than Modi's Gujarat. By publishing antiMaharashtra advertisement, the BJP is damaging the image of the state. shifting of the Reserve Bank of India from Mumbai and National Institute of Coastal Policing from Palghar to Dwarka in Gujarat exposed the dirty intentions of the Modi government. It is high time the voters in Maharashtra reject Modi totally.

Isolate Pak ONLY very recently our PM Narendra Modi had sent a strong message to Pakistan to stop waging “proxy war” and stop ceasefire violations across the borders and unprovoked firing on our soldiers, to pave the way for “peaceful talks”. He even raised this matter in his address in the UN during his US tour. These have had no effect as the Pak army has once again resorted to endless ceasefire violations and have even started killing Indian civilians staying in the border areas. It’s crystal clear that instead of the Pak-based terrorists, the Pak Army men and soldiers across the border have themselves started directly targetting the Indian soldiers and the civilians too, on our borders. They have killed several of our soldiers for no reason and without any provocation in the past and now the civilians are killed and critically injured.

THE avergae rate of derailment of passenger trains, goods trains, and locals are on the increase. It is observed that there is an alarming increase during the first nine months of this year. Loss of life, loss of limb, damage to property and train disruption all make the issue problematic. This looks like speeding, and whip lash action caused the derailment. Looks like the wagons are empty, and they must have kept bouncing till the wheels jumped off the rails. There was a recent passenger train tragedy in a freight train near Chiplun on the Konkan Railway route. It is a sad thing in our Railway system that the passenger lives are not guaranteed. Thus the vacation turns into tragedy and the people are scared to travel through trains. The callous attitude of the railway department is seen with this series of train tragedies. In the past, we have come across the then Railway Minister like Lal Bahadur Shastri resigning his post owning moral responsibility for a major Railway accident. The present generation of Ministers are sticking to their seat without shame. By and large such major accident inquiries of all sorts tend to place the blame on what is called as 'human error', implying that almost everything is the fault of the Railway staff on the spot. This is usually the easiest way out, especially when the passengers are dead

One thing is essentially important for the CIDCO officials to ensure that all the farmers should get their part of the legitimate compensation for their livelihood to continue without any problem, as otherwise while the construction commences and during its continuity, hiccups may occur because of agitation against any unfulfilled condition mutually agreed to by CIDCO and them. Pathetic picture in TN THE people in Tamil Nadu cutting across party lines should unite and protest this development very peacefully. She is paying for her stubborn stand on Cauvery. The government advocate seemed to have played a double game. After reportedly arguing against sanctioning bail in the morning, he did a volte face and mentioned that the government has no objection to sanctioning conditional bail. A drama? From all accounts, it appears that the judge seems to have arrived at a pre-meditated decision to refuse bail. A blessing in disguise is that her ADMK party is united. Fortunately, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has less reason to worry on this count as she prepares to serve out or even challenge her four-year prison term. But the high voltage affection that was visible as her chosen substitute, O Paneerselvam broke down as he took the oath, must come as a comfort to anyone worrying about the future of Tamil Nadu in Jayalalithaa's absence. THE Karnataka High Court on Tuesday did not grant AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa conditional bail on medical grounds. Jayalalithaa and her aides have been convicted and sentenced to four years in jail in a 1995 disproportionate assets case. In her petitions seeking immediate bail and challenging her sentence, Jayalalithaa had maintained that the charges of amassing wealth against her were false and that she had acquired property through legal means. Rule of the law was applied by the Karnataka Court and both Jayalalithaa and Jethmalini stood firm in their arguments to get the bail. Jayalalithaa is a fighter to the core from the days when she was removed from the Gun Carriage carrying matinee idol MG Ramachandran and she never looked back despite Karunanidhi trying his best give her innumerable problems on the way. AMMU: Two women of a family were on Wednesday killed and 15 others injured in heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistani troops along the international border in Jammu & Kashmir, taking the death toll to eight in the continued ceasefire violations by Pakistan for over a week. Pakistani Rangers targeted 50 border out posts (BoPs) and 35 hamlets overnight along the 192km boundary. EW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday said "everything will be fine soon" on Pakistan border amid the government's assertion that India is giving a "massive" reply to the "totally unprovoked" shelling by Pakistan and will continue to do so unless the other side stops. Top government sources said talks can happen if Pakistan is sincere and made it clear that India will not accept any third party intervention, including by the UN which has been approached by Pakistan. "Everything will be fine soon," Modi said on being asked about ceasefire violations by Pakistan. He was attending the 'At Home' organised by IAF Chief Arup Raha on the occasion of Air Force Day. Modi did not speak further but top government sources said India will not give in to "coercive diplomacy" by Pakistan and will respond strongly to Pakistani shelling. Contending that India is giving a "massive" response to the Pakistani action which was "totally unprovoked," the sources cited media reports in Pakistan to say that 35 people have been killed in the last two days on that side -- 20 yesterday and 15 the previous day.
"Pakistan should stop... We are only protecting our sovereignty," the sources said, adding "we did not escalate the situation and we are not going to scale down."

Mumbai, you need to think vertically when it comes to conserving space at home. So, instead of a wall-to-wall book shelf, look for a floor-to-ceiling cabinet that will help you save space. You can also install shelves above your TV or on an empty wall, to make the most of the space that’s available.
We’re sure that you’ve devised your own ways to manage and handle your email woes. So, we won’t waste too much time on this one. social meDia computer Whether it is replying to emails and working on assignments or shopping online and browsing through social media websites, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that we live our lives at our computers. So, it is essential to keep your computer free of clutter and in the best possible shape. Take a look at our tips. n
n
While Windows is a good operating system, it lacks good folder management utility. More often than not, you’ll find yourself hunting through a maze of folders and sub-folders, looking for important documents. To make it simpler, try software such as NexusFile V and Tabbles 2.0. Choose one that has a user interface and features that best suit your needs. Cloud computing might not have permeated to the masses in India, but it can make your life a whole lot easier. With cloud computing, you can rest assured that you won’t curse yourself for forgetting to email yourself the presentation you

were working on. Use services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Evernote, all of which come with a decent free storage and are available on tablets, laptops, as well as phones, ensuring that you can work on-the-go. Always remember to back-up your work — it only takes one crash to realise the importance of having a copy of your files and documents. Get a portable hard disk (a decent one will cost around `2,500) and copy everything that you’ve worked on, on to the hard disk. Not only will this keep your data safe, it will also make it easier for you to build up your portfolio. Cache and temporary files — these are two of the most common culprits when it comes to a slow PC. But, don’t worry, all you have to do is download a clean-up utility such as CCleaner (it’s free), which will clear your computer from the needless junk and extra files that crop up as a result of day-to-day use.
If you don’t monitor your social media presence regularly, you can accumulate a lot of clutter without even realising it. Take a look at these tips to de-clutter and organise your social media. n If you have stopped scrolling through your Twitter feed just because you don’t enjoy the content from the people whom you follow, use UnTweeps. It will ensure that you unfollow all inactive or dormant accounts, making your feed more relevant. n Apps such as Buffer and HootSuite allow you to schedule tweets in advance, so you can plan out your presence on Twitter instead of only tweeting in odd bursts. n Use Twitter’s in-built feature to make lists of accounts of the people you follow, depending on their type. With a list for work, another for news and a third for friends, your feed will be streamlined and you won’t waste time rifling through a jumbled feed. n Really Simple Syndication (RSS) providers create a feed of latest posts from blogs and websites that you follow. We recommend Google Reader, with which you can track tweets, news, articles, blog posts and read them on-the-go, in one place. n We love the idea of automating tasks and If This Then That (www.ifttt.com) is perfect for this purpose. It triggers response procedures when you perform simple tasks. For example, you can save an email on Evernote, every time you star an email on Gmail.
hanDbag or briefcase Ensure that you aren’t always rummaging through a heap of rubbish in your handbag, especially when you are looking for something. Following these tips instead. l Don’t put receipts or bills
into your bag, as they will stay there for ages. Carry a separate pouch for receipts and clean it out regularly.
l Apart from money, your mobile phone and tablet, sort things such as makeup and medicines into smaller pouches and then carry them in your bag to keep it clutter-free.
l Carry limited
makeup and personal care products and avoid carrying anything that you rarely use.
l Carry a small handbag or briefcase to ensure that you don’t lug around too many items.
l Keep pots and pans
that you use on a regular basis near your stove, so that you don’t have to hunt for them every time you cook.
use a wooden peg board to hang your pans and ladles.

l Apart from pens and sticky notes, try keeping the number of items on your desk to a minimum.

Art AttrAction Radhika Bawa & Shalan Dere, painter and potter respectively, are showcasing their work together, in an exhibition titled Stillness in Motion. Yamini Walia speaks to them about their work
A
rtists Radhika Bawa and Shalan Dere forged a strong friendship a few years ago, when Radhika joined Shalan’s pottery classes. Taking their friendship to the next level, they are now presenting an art exhibition, titled Stillness in Motion, that is currently taking place at Bajaj Art Gallery at Nariman Point and will be on up to October 11. Read on as we talk to them about the exhibition, their favourite p ieces and their future plans.
n What are your favourite pieces? Tell us
about them. Radhika: As an artist, you are most satisfied when you are able to project on canvas, what’s actually on your mind. When that happens, it feels like magic and naturally, those pieces become favourites. Shalan: I am very involved and obsessed with every piece that I make. A little bit of me goes into each piece. My creations called Awaiting and Corporate Ladder are my favourites so far.
n What made you choose pottery and
painting as your profession? Radhika: The seeds of artistry were sowed in my mind at a very young age. I could spend hours drawing and making projects at school. Predictably, education and career took over, and I lost touch with art. Then, a chance workshop in water colours, 11 years ago, led to more indepth study and art lessons from my guru S. Vinit Kumar. I have never looked back! Shalan: Looking back, it seems like a totally unplanned choice. I never chose to be a potter, but the clay decided for me. I was extremely preoccupied with my family and business, so there was no question whatsoever about making any major life changes at that point. I took up pottery classes as a hobby, to provide respite from my busy life. But, I ended up buying a w heel before completing the course and started practicing every night. I just could not give up clay and slowly, over the next five or six years, I realised that I was meant to work with clay.
n What would you say your USP is? What
>> Radhika Bawa (Right) & Shalan Dere (Left) began their association around 10 years ago, when Radhika joined Shalan’s pottery classes similar — one of disciplined, sincere work and effort. Our aesthetic sense matched! That’s why we thought of collaborating. Shalan: After Radhika did a hand pottery workshop with me, we kept in touch and saw each other’s work over the years. We felt like we had a lot in common — we were both self-taught, obsessed with our art forms and trying t o learn as much as possible. So, it did not take us much time to decide to organise this show. n Tell us about your exhibition, Stillness in
n What made you both decide to partner
with each other? Radhika: Almost 10 years ago, I began to develop an interest in ceramics and that’s when I did a short workshop with Shalan. It was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Through the years, we realised that our approach to art was
lot more today. However, if you compare our scenario with the rest of the world, we still have a long way to go. Lack of information and exposure is the reason for indifference towards this art form. The onus is on the artist to make sure that more and more people see this art form, increase awareness and make people appreciate pottery.
Motion. What’s in store for our readers? Radhika: When we were brainstorming names for the show, the idea that struck us was that both of us were essentially creating stillness out of motion and stillness in spite of motion. So, the show is our attempt to bring two opposing ideas (stillness and motion) to our
audience in a colourful way. I am showcasing a series of horses in vibrant colour. The idea is to convey an emotion and capture a mood through colour and texture. The show is different for a number of reasons — this is the first time I am exhibiting solo as a painter and Shalan as a potter. Shalan: I saw her colourful horses and knew immediately that this show was going to be about colour. For my last solo show, I aimed to work on the unlimited creative possibilities, using clay as the medium. Now, to make colour a common thread, I decided to use basic pottery forms with unique glazes (ceramic colours) as the focal point. n How would you describe the state of
pottery in India and worldwide? Shalan: I’m happy to say that pottery and ceramics in India are being appreciated a
makes your work stand out? Radhika: I don’t think any artist can really compare herself/ himself with others. Each artist is a sum total of their experiences, their surroundings, their challenges, perceptions, struggles and attempts. The real comparison in my mind is about what I am putting out, with what I want it to be. Shalan: My USP is my complete obsession and hunger for learning. This, coupled with a lot of hard work has got me where I am today, without any formal training. As far as my work is concerned, I think my glazes make all the difference. n Tell us about your future plans.
Radhika: Keep painting! Plain and simple! Shalan: After having done a lot of work with glazes, I would like to explore alternative firing techniques, where use of glazes is either minimal (Raku firing) or absent, like in sagger, saw dust or pit firing. I have also another annual show lined up for next year.

« celeb hit or miss: rhea dhanbhoora takes a look at what our leading ladies wore this week « «
narGis fakHri
katrina kaif
When we first saw this, we thought ‘OMG, not more metallics!’ — but Nargis actually manages to look stunning in this piece. We’re not fans of the nude heels, they draw attention away from the dress. But the simple silhouette enhances her gorgeous curves enough for that to be forgiven.
Mixing prints and colours can be dangerous, but Katrina manages pretty well. The dress is not one of our favourites, but it fits her well and she’s kept accessories at a minimum, so it’s not an eyesore. We’re glad the skirt is a little flared, a pencil dress would not have lent as fun and flirty a vibe as this does.
Let’s face it, none of us wake up looking as fresh as a daisy, with dewy skin or pink, flushed cheeks. However, the no-makeup look ensures that you look picture perfect, without any traces of visible makeup. Shirley Mistry & Sara Shah tell you how to master the look
T
he key to getting the no-makeup look right is to use as few products as possible. Only target areas that need a little help and let your skin breathe. The minute you pile on products, your makeup becomes visible and the look will seem artificial. Another handy tip to remember is to let freckles and spots peek through. Don’t cover them up entirely; you don’t want to look like a plastic doll.
HealtHy flusH When it comes to blush, the idea is to look like you have a healthy flush of colour on your cheeks. So, opt for cream-based or matte powder blushes and apply them on the apples of your cheeks with a stippling brush. Using a stippling brush gives you a natural look and doesn’t deposit too much product on to your face. Don’t try and contour or create a defined look though; as you want to look naturally rosy-cheeked, not heavily made up. We recommend: Try the Cheeky Glow Blush from Maybelline (`250) or the Lakme 9 to 5 Pure Rouge Blusher (`450).
BasiC Base Instead of choosing a full-coverage foundation, opt for a base that offers light coverage. Don’t slather on several layers of foundation. You should stick to a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream. If your skin is patchy or you suffer from pigmentation, opt for a light foundation and apply one or two, thin layers. Remember that the idea is to even out your skin tone, so, use a sponge or a stippling brush instead of a thick, flat one to achieve a minimal, fresh-faced look. We recommend: Try the L’oreal Paris True Match BB Cream (`550) or the Clear Glow BB Cream from Maybelline (`199)
Coveted ConCealer This step is extremely crucial, as it can make or break your no-makeup look. We recommend using a concealer that doesn’t crease and applying it before you apply foundation. This way, you won’t go overboard with your foundation and won’t over-do the look. Apply concealer to correct dark circles and other scars and blemishes. Again, apply thin layers instead of thick ones to ensure that the concealer doesn’t blend into your skin and isn’t identifiable from a distance. We recommend: Try the True Match Concealer by L’oreal Paris (`875) or the Colorbar Full Cover Make up stick (`675).
«
Deepika’s taken geometric prints and pantsuits to an entirely new level with this look. Her shoes are gorgeous, the fit is perfect for her, but we’re not really sure how well it works. It looks like she may be heading out to a pyjama party rather than rocking a red carpet event. She gets a thumbs up for trying though!
While the pleats on the skirt of her dress make it look pretty, the embellishment at the waist sort of takes away from the drop-dead gorgeous red of Mughda’s dress. Her hair is pulled back a little too high and while we love the simple V-neck and strap embellishments, this look eventually falls a little flat.

eye sPy With dark circles taken care of, all you need to do is skip the eye-liner and kohl and line your lower waterline with a nude eye pencil. This will open up your eyes and make you look fresher. Add a coat of mascara to frame your eyes and you’re good to go. Avoid eyeshadow and eyeliner, as they are unnecessary for this look. However, if your eyelids are darker than the rest of your face or have prominent visible veins, apply an extremely light layer of a matte brown eyeshadow that matches your skin tone. It will even out your skin, without being visible. We recommend: Try the Kohl Pencil in Nude from Oriflame (`249) and The Colossal Volum Express Mascara from Maybelline (`330).

PerfeCt Pout Your lips will define a nomakeup look, and just like your cheeks, they need to sport only a hint of colour. Start off by exfoliating your lips and moisturising them with a lip balm. Line and fill them in with a lip liner that is just a shade brighter than your natural lip colour and has a slight pink hue. The reason we recommend using a lip liner is that it will help cover any pigmentation and will stay put all day, without shifting. Top it off with a light layer of lip balm. We recommend: Try the Coloressence Lip Liner in Nude Pink (`299) or the Lakme 9 to 5 lip liner in Beige Pink (`281).

want to pull off drawstring skirts with élan? dev goswami has some great tips for you Pair them with crop tops
Drawstring skirts and crop tops are like a match made in heaven. Perfect for a casual evening or a night out, look for tops that end just around your navel and feature funky prints and designs. Depending on the colour of your top, you can opt for a skirt in either bright colours (such as red or orange), or sombre shades of grey. Opt for knee-length skirts though — a combination of a very short drawstring skirt and crop top will make you look like a teenager.
stay classic
A white formal shirt and a grey drawstring skirt — this is a classic look that will never go out of fashion. Replacing your usual black bottoms with a grey drawstring will give your wardrobe a unique touch, while still making sure that you don’t commit a fashion faux pas. If you want a formal look, opt for a knee-length skirt with a shirt long enough to be tucked in, and make sure to tie a very small, barelythere knot.
Bring on the shimmer
Drawstring skirts made from satin, or with a shimmery finish, are one of the best ways to rock this trend. Shimmery skirts make for a more casual look and so, you can opt for a skirt that is shorter-than-knee-
length to follow this tip. Just pair your satin skirt with a quote-based T-shirt, a solid hand-bag that goes with the colour of your skirt and a pair of pumps. Want our recommendation? Pick a red, satin drawstring skirt and pair it with a light blue top.
Go full length
While you shouldn’t wear sleeveless tops with normal drawstring skirts, you can do so if you opt for a full-length skirt. Shades of brown, dark green or ochre will pair great with a white, sky blue or yellow tank top. Add a chunky necklace along with a bracelet and a pair of flats or sandals to complete this look.
dr. Batra’s instant Hair tHiCkener
Getting sexy
Drawstring skirts are perfect to wear at dinner dates, and they are versatile as well! From solids and stripes to paisley prints and polka dots, choose a design that you like best and pair it with a solidcoloured top (a crop top will work great) in a shade that complements your skirt. Avoid any neck jewellery, but you can choose a pair of over-sized earrings and a bracelet to glam up the look. The final aspect of this date outfit is to wear the skirt at an angle, with an oversized butterfly knot, which will add a sexy touch to the outfit.
>> Zoe Saldana rocks an all-grey look with this drawstring skirt
Dr. Batra’s products are known to offer effective solutions to almost all hair loss problems. So, when the brand recently launched an instant hair thickener, we couldn’t wait to try it. The thickener offers coverage to thinning or bald areas of the head within 30 seconds or less. Applying the product is quite easy: all you need to do is just sprinkle the product on the thin areas and it will automatically bond with your natural hair, covering the areas with less hair. However, the hair fibres spread unevenly, so you need to be a little careful on that front. The end result is pleasing as the hair fibres feel like natural hair and have no side effects such as itching. where All retail outlets across the city Price `1,200 for 12g rating ****

Yoga with
children O ne of the best aspects of yoga is that it is lighter, as well as less physically strenuous on your body than conventional exercise. This means that it’s a safe way to ensure that your children stay fit, without having to worry about the dangers of over-exercising. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, the director of The Yoga Institute in Santacruz, tells us, “Simple yogic techniques enable you to hold your body and mind together, which is extremely important for a child. Children can start practicing yoga when they’re as young as 5-years-old.” However, she does emphasise that you shouldn’t be too strict or regimental when it comes to teaching your child yoga. There are numerous benefits, she explains, as these asanas will help with better mind and body co-ordination, concentration, as well as healthy, overall growth. Simultaneously raise your body and stand on your toes. Maintain this position for four seconds. Lower your arms and heels back down to the floor as you exhale.

Lie on your back, with your hands by your side. Bend your knees, then bring your heels as close to your bottom as possible. Now, raise your hands, bend them over your shoulders and bring your palms near your ears. Your palm should be on the floor, with your elbow pointing up and your fingers pointing towards your shoulders. Lift your body up, using your palms and feet to support it. Push your head back slightly, so that your gaze is lowered towards the floor. Maintain this position for as long as you can. To release the position, slowly lower your body until it touches the ground.

bSafe is an innovative application, designed by Silje Vallestad. She developed this revolutionary application out of concern for her daughter’s safety when she was growing up. It enables you to create a network of friends and family, who will be alerted in times of distress. Just one touch of the screen and you can send your geographical location (via GPS) to your network of family and friends. You can use the timer mode to send automatic alarms if you have not arrived at preappointed locations, and even set up a fake incoming call to exit unwanted conversations.

I have studied design in one of the best schools in Singapore and on returning to India, I moved from home to come here to Mumbai for a very exciting job interview And I got it! I was thrilled! I know I am good and bursting with fresh ideas! So I was confident and eager... Welcome aboard Sivani! Your portfolio is amazing! Start tomorrow!
If your long distance love is finally moving back to the same city, take a look at what adjustments you may need to make to ensure that it’s a smooth shift, says Yamini Walia
I
f you’ve been in a long distance relationship for several months or years, suddenly going back to being in the same city can be a bit of a challenge. It can be as troublesome moving from being together 24/7 to a long distance relationship, or even be as trying as starting a new one! Since you are not used to your partner’s physical presence, the reduced distance may come with a bag full of surprises. For your relationship to sail smoothly, both you and your partner need to work hard on it. Read on to see what you should do to handle this change without a hitch.
The next day, I was so excited! Our department’s boss, while having approved my appointment via email, had not been to the offices for a while as he had dengue. So the lady from HR introduced me to Jasmine from my new team. She was very welcoming and friendly and we started chatting immediately... I like your bun... er... top-knot... especially the cute little bow! It’s... err... *CHOCHWEET* Thanks! I love doing my hair! Bet you can’t wait to grow yours!
Talk iT ouT After the elation of being together again has died, you and your partner need to discuss the current status of your relationship. You need to voice your fears and expectations and make sure that your partner voices his concerns too. This may prove to be a bumpy ride, but it will definitely lay down a solid foundation for your future together.
Space iS NeceSSary It’s understandable that you and your partner can’t keep your hands off each other, but it is important to give each other space. We’re sure you are not used to anyone interfering with your personal space, so imagine how your partner will feel if you don’t respect his boundaries and become clingy and desperate for attention all of sudden.
>> Voice your fears and concerns to your partner before you decide to proceed further
Take a Trip A change in environment, where you both have time for each other, can help you understand the depth of your relationship. Sometimes, people gel well when they are away from each other, but as soon as they are in close

It can take up to 90 days to adjust to new surroundings or relationships. So, if you feel like your relationship is going haywire, give yourself three months before you decide to break up. After all, you don’t want to regret missing out on something really great just because you weren’t patient enough to see it through the hard times.
« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, My boyfriend recently proposed to me and we are planning a quick wedding. Unlike a lot of other couples, we have set a date only four months away and have already started planning it. But, my fiancé has just been assigned an important project and is going to be in London for a month and a half! While preparing for his trip and his big, new project, he has no time left to attend to wedding chores with me and I am scared that once he goes on his
business trip, I am going to be handling all the preparations by myself. Should we shift the date? Should I ask him to cancel the trip? — Neha Sukheja, Bandra Dear Neha, It is unfortunate that your fiancé has to travel abroad so close to your wedding date, but there is no need to panic! Stressing too much will only make the situation worse for you. Calm down and look at how you can make the best of
the situation. Instead of shifting the date, just ask your friends, parents and his parents to pitch in — we’re sure that they will be more than happy to help out. Also, while he may not be able to help you physically, you can always video chat with him and get his inputs on all important wedding decisions. We are sure he must be equally excited and will take time out for the big day. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in
Within no time, Jasmine had asked me what they told me my job would be and how much my salary was... I saw no harm in telling her. She would soon be ‘my friend from work’! They were a bit vague about my job... guess when the boss is back... I’m getting about XXXXX in hand plus plus... You?
XXXXX? Err... I’m getting the same... Okay let’s work... I will mail you some images you can do cutouts of.
And suddenly it was very business-like. I was confused. I am a good designer and being given cut-outs to do is like telling an architect to play with toy blocks I came home that night after doing a million mindnumbing cut-outs in tears. I just sat with my cat and ignored all the phone calls of people calling to congratulate me on my job
“Jasmine has been with the company a year, so she is probably in charge while the boss is sick. But, she won’t let me near any of the good projects. And not to be mean... but, her ideas and work is quite below average. Help me please!” — Sivani a) It’s normal to build up something in your head and for it to turn into something else. This is a job. Just do what needs doing. b) She thinks she can bully you because you wear bows. Stop letting her! Tomorrow, ask to see all briefs! Or talk to HR! c) Wait till you boss is back. In the mean time, get to know the others in the office so that they know you exist. Don’t worry! LAST WEEK: Reena should pick option A: With all that is going on in the news, it is only natural your sister is worried. See if you can calm her fears. Also, explain to Keya where her mom is coming from.

What is Chlamydia? I suppose it is STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). Please give some more info about Chlamydia. CHLAMYDIA is a very prevalent sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium ‘Chlamydia Trachomatis’. However, many people do not know that they have chlamydia, because although they are infected they may not have any symptoms. About 75% of infected women and half of infected men have themselves no symptoms of chlamydia. Exchange of body fluids containing the organism such as semen, saliva, or vaginal secretions transmits the infection. The amount of time between contact with chlamydia and signs of infection (incubation period) is usually 1-3 weeks. If symptoms do occur, they would include a clear or cloudy discharge from the penis (or anus); burning and/or itching during urination; pain and/or swelling around the testicles, and the need to urinate frequently. Less commonly, one can get eye infections. Untreated chlamydial infection in men can

spread to the prostate gland and epididymis, causing pain, inflammation, and possible infertility. Chlamydia can easily be treated and cured with antibiotics. It is important to make sure you and your partner both receive treatment in order to prevent getting infected again. It is advisable to avoid having sex while being treated to reduce the possibility of getting the infection again or transmitting it to the other. Because people infected with chlamydia often also have gonorrhea infection, treatment for gonorrhea is often needs to be provided as well. a weak market but with a neutral bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7816 points level. The next support is at the 7615 points level. Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8138 points level. The next resistance is at the 8246 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7843 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7816. Support (2) = 7789. Resistance (1) = 7870. Resistance (2) = 7897. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below its 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving average and all the three averages are declining and also negatively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate weakness. Both these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major support level at the 7816 points level. The index touched that level and bounced back. There is a possibility that the index could find some support and reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, then a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Revenue Growth Expected To Decelerate In Q2 FY15
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2014
NEWS FLASH
Government mulls setting up task-force to achieve 300 MT steel output SEBI to announce new listing, de-listing regulations next month Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Mindtree dip 4-7% on Citi downgrade Hero MotoCorp launches two bikes priced up to Rs 51,550 Oilmeal exports drop 73% in September Gold prices up 0.27 per cent to Rs 27,020 per 10gms in futures trade.
Blip amidst gradual economic recovery; EBITDA margins to improve in steel, cement, and IT, says Crisil Research By A Business Reporter
I
ndian corporates could “report a revenue growth of 9-10% yearon-year (y-o-y) in the September 2014 quarter, lower than 13% growth reported in the June quarter, due to slower growth in export-oriented sectors and the continued weak performance of investment-linked sectors predicts Crisil Research. This forecast is based on an analysis of 600 companies (excluding financial services and oil companies), representing 71% of the overall market capitalisation of India Inc. Exportoriented sectors have been performing extremely well in the past 5 quarters, reporting strong y-o-y growth due to a slight rebound in demand in key markets and currency tailwinds. However, in the September 2014 quarter, the rupee
appreciated by 3% against the USD on a y-o-y basis; so no gains will be reported on the currency front. Says Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research: “Despite healthy volume growth, we project revenue growth of IT service providers to decline to an 8-quarter low of 12%. Similarly, revenue growth of the pharmaceutical sector is also forecast to fall to 14% from 16.3% in the preceding quarter. In the textile space, cotton spinners are likely to report 9% revenue decline on the back of lower export demand from China. On the other hand, the automobile and steel sectors are expected to post 12-14% revenue growth, largely on the back of higher sales volumes as well as the strong performance of overseas operations of some companies. FMCG companies are likely to grow by about 15%, propelled by an increase in realisations and superior product mix. Investment-linked sectors such as construction and capital goods will continue to perform poorly, as the pace of project execution continues to be tardy. The cement industry, however, is forecast to buck the trend, with revenue growth touch-
ing 15-17%, driven largely by increase in realisations on a low base of last year. On the profitability front, CRISIL Research foresees a 50 basis points y-o-y jump in EBITDA margins in Q2 FY15. Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, CRISIL Research said, “The steel and cement sectors will see a 90 bps and 180 bps improvement, respectively, owing to higher realisations. The IT services sector margins will improve by about 85 bps due to better employee utilisation, while the surge in data revenues and cost control will drive a 110 bps expansion in EBITDA margins of telecom operators. On the other hand, the automobile sector’s margins are expected to contract by 30 y-o-y as an increase in the margins of commercial and passenger vehicle segments is likely to be offset by a decline in margins in two-wheelers and tractors. The diversion of coal from the e-auction route to the power sector, will translate to a contraction of 300-350 bps in the margins of the coal sector. Tighter operating norms coupled with lowered incentives are likely to hit the power sector’s margins by 120-150 bps.
SEBI Chief Promises Changes To Help SME Sector By A Business Reporter
S
23
EBI Chairman U K Sinha has announced that he was taking serious measures to help the SME sector in raising finances while inaugurating CAPAM 2014 organised in the city yesterday, by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI). Earlier initiatives in 2003 and 2009 were not successful, but a new set of measures taken in early 2012 had borne fruit. In a span of two years, 71 companies got listed on the SME platform and raised finances of about Rs 600 crore. By a thumb rule, the market capital of these companies was Rs 2500–Rs 3000 crore. “To my mind, while the promoters are willing to put in money, their full potential is not being realised whether it is sales or profit growth because they have a very serious problem in raising finances when they need it. Keeping this in mind, SEBI came out with a set of regulations about an SME platform, he explained. This year’s theme was ‘Revitalizing Indian Capital Markets: Role of Foreign Investments & Domestic Institutional Investments’. He was happy to note that there was now a hugely optimistic mood in the country as compared to the sentiment during last year’s conference. The lowest figure of growth projection is now 5.5%, with WB and IMF figures of 5.6%. This is despite forecasts of a mediocre global growth rate. “Look at our markets. In one year, the returns are about 30%. FII flows during the current year have
been around 34 billion dollars; and in the financial year clearly it has been about 25 billion dollars. Going by the trend I wouldn’t be surprised if we end the current year by an all time record number. This is a remarkable thing for our country to have achieved in less than one year, he said. Sinha acknowledged that while the overall investment mood in the country was very good, there are still some tax related issues. SEBI will be taking those up with the government. He expressed happiness that trade and industry, and even the government all have been coming together to remove any anomalies and implement SEBI’s mandate. Sunil Sanghai, Chairman, FICCI Capital Markets Committee and MD & Head—Banking, India, HSBC, lauded Sinha’s efforts to revitalize the capital markets. Congratulating Sinha on his recent Economic Times Award, he praised his leadership to take SEBI and capital markets forward over a period of time. The FICCI Capital Markets Committee has been making proactive and constructive suggestions in this regard, and engaging with regulators as well as policy makers. He pointed out that our capital markets will play an important role in the development of the country and in the policy initiatives of the newly elected government. In her welcome address, Ms Naina Lal Kidwai, Immediate Past President, FICCI, and Chairman— India, HSBC and Executive Director, HSBC Asia Pacific, observed that the
general feeling was that the government means business. However, it is also important to convert these sentiments into fresh investments in capital markets and FDI. The present forum would touch on some of these issues, so that the ‘feel good’ feeling is supplemented by some real action on the ground. Since development of infrastructure is a key issue for development, the seminar would have a full session dedicated to that topic, she pointed out.

Sukirti Kandpal ousted from Big Boss elevision actress Sukirti TbeKandpal, the first contestant to ousted from the Bigg Boss
house, said she is not disappointed with the elimination but would love to make a comeback on the show. The actress who rose to fame after her TV soap 'Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani' was nominated this week along with Praneet Bhatt and Gautam Gulati. "It was an early elimination for me but I am not disappointed. I enjoyed my stay a lot. I have made good friends in the house. If given a chance I would like to go back to the house as a wild card contestant and reunite with my friends," Sukirti told PTI after her elimination. During her two-week stay in the house, the actress had made friends with fellow contestant Arya Babbar and Upen Patel and she said she would love to maintain their friendship beyond the show as well. "We three bonded very well on the show. I guess it was because we had this natural chemistry. We would always end up sitting together and chatting," she said. Last week a controversy shook
the house as Gautam used foul language towards fellow contestant Karishma Tanna. The event snowballed into a big issue with most of the housemates abandoning Gautam. When asked about this, Sukirti said, "It was an unfortunate incident. But we did not corner him for no reason...He was not sorry for his action and it irked us. I think the issue was stretched by Gautam himself."
With 'Active Javed Akhtar' the lyricist will select 'dohas', recite them one at a time and explain the literal meaning of it and then talk about its relevance in today's life. Akhtar said he has adopted a very simple approach on the programme so that everyone is able to understand and imbibe it in their lives. "We are not intellectualising anything. We aim to maintain the simplicity of the thought. When I was talking about it I realised that they are as relevant today as they ever were before. It was a satisfying exercise," Akhtar said, adding he has also included Urdu poetry in the show.
Navi Bhangu is lovelorn Star of many Punjabi films and shows, the hunky bearded Navi Bhangu is agog with excitement. He will be starring in his favourite TV diva Ekta Kapoor's hinterland show 'Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai' to start on October 16 on Sony Pal. We talked to the handsome actor about his new show By Sandeep Hattangadi
Has the feeling sunk in? Not yet. I am walking on air because this television personality whose family shows I used to adore and enjoy watching back home in Jallandhar, I am now finally a part of her show. I did many shows after moving to Mumbai nine years back, but with this show, my dream has finally come true.
What is 'Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai' about? It is a show that will surely strike a chord with many a heart. Set in Patna, 'Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai' charts the journey of Poorvi (Aparna Dixit), the daughter of a senior government employee and Arjun (me), the spoilt son of the local coal mafia. Initially Poorvi and Arjun can't see eye to eye, but steadily get drawn towards each other and eventually, go on to combat all odds and family antagonism for their love. Unfortunately both are destined to be apart. 'Yeh Dil Suna Raha Hai' is thus the story of two star-crossed lovers and their journey of adoration and hatred. Does your character have negative shades? My role is grey because he is the spoilt son of a rich family and is arrogant and fast talking. But at heart he is a well meaning, nice person. I prepared for my character with whatever the director and Ekta wanted. What was it like working with Aparna Dixit? She is a nice person, easygoing and always willing to help me with a scene by making me feel comfortable. Who are the directors on your wishlist? All of them, actually, but it’s my dream to act with Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra.

Windies decide against boycotting ODI K
Marlon Samuels celebrates after scoring a century against India in Kochi on Wednesday. He remained unbeaten on 126 runs.
SAMUELS RUNS
INDIA OUT Crisis-hit Windies thrash India by 124 runs
By R Eswar
K
OCHI: West Indies put behind an acrimonious pay dispute with their Board to spank number one ranked India by a huge margin of 124 runs in the first one-dayer to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The Caribbeans, who were on the verge of boycotting the ODI, rode on Marlon Samuels' career-best equalling 126 not out to post 321 for six and then shot out the Indians for 197 in 41 overs in a rather one-sided contest at the Nehru Stadium. India paid the price for some mediocre bowling and shoddy batting as they were outplayed by the crisis-hit visiting team in all departments of the game to suffer a heavy defeat. Indian bowlers gave away too many runs at the second part of West Indies innings to allow the visitors pile up a big total after being put into bat and then the much-vaunted home batsmen, except for Shikhar Dhawan (68), failed to fire on a batting pitch. Most of Indian batsmen were out on poor shot selection and they could not stitch any substantial partnership in the face of some tight bowling by the visiting bowlers, the highest being the 49 in 8.4 overs for the opening wicket between Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane (24). West Indies, even without their mystery spinner Sunil Narine, could tie down the top Indian batsmen who failed to get the runs when required. Chasing a huge target of 322 for a win, India could not get to a good start as Rahane came from 92 balls with the was run out in a bizarre mixed-up in the ninth over help of nine fours. Ravindra Jadeja (33 not with just 49 on board. India’s Suresh Raina look back after he is bowled by West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo during the first ODI match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Wednesday.
OCHI: The West Indies cricket team decided not to boycott the opening ODI against India here but the side's tour remained in jeopardy over an acrimonious pay dispute with its parent body. Skipper Dwayne Bravo came out for the toss to put an end to the speculation that the Caribbeans may boycott the match to protest against the contracts handed out to them by the West Indies Cricket Board which would have resulted in a 75 per cent cut in their salaries. However, the matter is far from over with the players insisting that they reserve the right to take the "best course of action" if the dispute is not resolved. "After much consideration, the West Indies players have decided to participate

in the 1st One Day International against India. This decision should not in any way be construed as an acceptance by the players of the unreasonable terms and conditions put forward to us by WICB nor is it an acceptance of the purported new Memorandum of Under-
standing," Bravo said in a letter to Players' Association chief Wavell Hinds. "The Players will not accept any agreement it has had no input in, did not give its consent to and which would infringe on its rights. We reserve all of our rights and intend to seek independent advice so as to establish the players best course of action," the letter, published by 'ESPNCricinfo', stated. "...We wish to reiterate our position put forward to the WICB earlier, that we continue under the old structure until a new agreement is reached between the players and WICB. Neither the WICB nor the players would be in a disadvantageous position since this would have been mutually agreed by the parties.

EW DELHI: India's popular sports couple Dipika Pallikal and Dinesh Karthik have decided to get married mid next year after almost two years of togetherness made official with their engagement last November. Squash queen Pallikal has usually been more vocal about the celebrated relationship but this time India cricketer Karthik took it upon himself to share the wedding plans.

look forward to even better times," said Pallikal, who looked stunning in a pink dress. Both however chose to keep the details of the planned ceremonies under wraps. Pallikal and Karthik are a rare sports couple in current times and the general perception is their profession binds them together. Giving an insight into their relationship, Karthik however reveals they rarely discus sport.
"That is actually interesting. It is a sports couple but I have never looked at it as a sports couple. We are like any other couple to be honest. She doesn't know much about cricket to enter into my zone though I know a little bit of squash. But that is how it is and we are okay with it," said the easy going 29-year-old. Karthik further says, "If you look at it, sport is our profession. We go out there and play because we are very passionate about the game we play. Perhaps the only common thing we do sport-wise is go to the gym together. Even there she has her own time and I have my own schedule. The biggest positive of our sport connection is that we like to watch each other play. I especially find it fascinating to watch squash," he said. The wicket-keeper batsman watched Pallikal win a historic gold in Glasgow Games while his fiancee travelled with Karthik in the last IPL. They say opposite attracts and the same could be said about the two sportspersons. Pallikal is more outgoing while Karthik likes to keep a low profile. "We are different personalities and that way we compliment each other. She likes to talk about us in public sometimes and I like to take a step down and keep my private life very private. "But at the base of it we are very simple people. I can also be really lazy sometimes when it comes to going out. On the contrary Dipika likes to eat out even when she is in Chennai. I am two steps back in that sense. I am more of a homely person who likes to watch movies for as long as I can and spend a lot of time with my friends," quipped Karthik.
Police search for seven athletes missing from Asiad
SEOUL: South Korean police are now searching for seven athletes who have disappeared from the Asian Games athletes' village in an attempt to find jobs, police said. The seven include three from Nepal, two from Sri Lanka and one each from Bangladesh and Palestine. "We've planted informants in areas where many workers from these countries live" to collect information about missing athletes' whereabouts, a senior police official told AFP. Most Asian immigrant workers reside in satellite cities around the capital Seoul such as Incheon, Bucheon and Ansan. "When we find them, we will ask them to leave the country even before their visa expires on October 19 as they left the athletes' village without permission", the official said. Athletes from Southeast and South Asian countries often flee sports events in South Korea and other major Asian economies to illegally look for work. Sixteen athletes from those regions vanished during the 2002 Busan Asian Games. Every year South Korea issues visas for tens of thousands of foreign workers from Vietnam, the Philippines and other Asian countries to help ease manpower shortages. More than 200,000 foreign workers are also illegally employed in manufacturing, construction and other industries.

UNE: Lesser fancied Indians continued to impress, while the fancied ones struggled to score even as overseas grandmasters took charge in the third round of the World Junior Chess Championships being played at Hotel Hyatt in Pune. S L Narayanan was one of the early finishers holding second seed and super GM Robin Van Kampen(2641) to a draw while 10-year-old Nihal Sarin’s impressive display once again won him many admirers as he held Balazs CSonka (2409) to a draw and he remained unbeaten after three encounters against opponents rated higher than 2400. In an all Indian tussle, India’s main contender for the title, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi had to settle for a draw against Sahej Grover. In the Girls section too, India’s strong contender for the title, Padmini Rout was held to a draw by Maria Ivana Furtado. Wei Yi and Lu Shanglei of China Jorge Cori Of Peru, Vladislav Kovalev of Belarus and Pouya Idani of Iran had emerged joint leaders with three points at the time of going to press. Ankit Rajpara was trying to press for a win with an extra pawn against Arat Ufuk and would be the only Indian amongst the leaders in case he manages to win the game. Vidit opted for the Sicilian defence against Sahej who made his aggressive intentions clear form the starting

By the 24th turn, Vidit appeared better placed with an extra pawn and good placement of pieces. On the 28th turn, there was a possibility for Vidit to improve on his position by continuing to attack but he chose to exchange queens and Sahej was back in the game with drawing possibilities. The players signed the draw on the 39th turn when most pieces had been exchanged and each had a bishop and 4 pawns . SL playing with the Whites pieces appeared to adopt a pre-determined strategy of
exchanging pieces at the slightest opportunity and forced Van Kampen to split the point after 31 moves. The Maria versus Padmini game was a rather sedate and solid affair which fizzled into a draw after 33 moves. PCB set to send Ajmal for biomechanic test
KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to send suspended off-spinner Saeed Ajmal for a biomechanic test after he reported a marked improvement in his bowling action. Ajmal, who has been Pakistan's top spinner for the last few years, was also suspended by the ICC from bowling in international cricket last month after failing an official test as per ICC rules. "Saeed (Ajmal) is very confident that he will be ready soon with a remodelled action for another independent biomechanic test," PCB chief
operating officer Subhan Ahmad told PTI. "Saqlain Mushtaq and the team of experts who are working on Saeed's bowling action have also given positive feedback. Once we get a go ahead from them we plan to send him for an independent analysis of his remodelled action," Ahmad said. "Saeed and Saqlain are very confident his remodelled action will ensure his bowling action is within the ICC permitted limit of 15 degrees. But we are anxious to see whether the remodelled action will have reduced his potency as a bowler or it will remain the same," he added.
Bangla and Zimbabwe bowlers suspended for ‘illegal’ actions D
UBAI: Bangladesh's Sohag Gazi and Zimbabwe's Prosper Utseya have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect for "illegal" bowling actions, the ICC said. "The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent analysis has found the bowling actions of Gazi and Utseya to be illegal and, as such, both off-spinners have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement. "The analysis revealed that all of their deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations," it said. Gazi was reported after the second ODI against West Indies in St George's in August, while Utseya was reported after the third ODI against South Africa in Bulawayo that same month. Both players can apply for a re-assessment after modifying their bowling actions in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions. The analysis was performed
on September 19 by ICC's accredited team of Human Movement Specialists using the Cardiff Metropolitan University. The ICC's officials have been strict with identifying illegal actions in recent months and bans were handed out to Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal and Sri Lanka's Sachithra Senanayake among others, after both were found guilty of breaking the 15-degree flex rule. A similar drive was undertaken in the recent Champions League T20, during which West Indies spinner Sunil Narine was banned from bowling in the final.
