fter a month's probe into the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Student Wing state vice president Akhil Chitre's molestation case, the Bandra Police has finally dropped the molestation charges and booked the leader for ransacking and manhandling a staffer of India Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). The MNS leader has demanded that the woman, who filed a fake molestation case against him, be booked under appropriate section for misleading the police. He also plans to file a defamation suit against her. On May 22, the Bandra Police had registered a molestation case against the MNS leader for allegedly misbehaving with a female IIPM staffer. Staff of the institute who were allegedly employed by the Bandra institute had a dispute with the management over salary. In her statement to the Bandra police, the staffer had alleged that Chitre had

According to Senior Police Inspector of Bandra police station, Ramchandra Dhavle, “It is true that we have dropped the molestation charge against Chitre but we have applied other charges, of ransacking and manhandling against him.

misbehaved with her inside the institute premises, but after a thorough investigation into the case and scanning of CCTV footages, the police found that Chitre was not at all present at the spot where he was supposed to have molested

the woman. According to Senior Police Inspector of Bandra police station, Ramchandra Dhavle, “It is true that we have dropped the molestation charge against Chitre but we have applied other charges, of ransacking and manhandling against him. Defending himself, Chitre said, “It was a false and baseless allegation made by the woman who is related to the administration head of IIPM, Saleem Khan. It was a plan to stop me from busting their racket in the name of MBA education. But I have come out clean in this false case and I now hope the police and state women's commission will take note and initiate serious action against this woman who is misusing her rights and trying to malign my image, but my agitation against the institute will continue. Investigation officer (IO) in the case, Sachin Patil, said: “We will cross-examine the eye witnesses in the case, but we will book the woman for giving us false information.”

f you thought the only Korean music export to the world was Psy and his world famous superhit, Gangnam Style, you really haven’t heard much of Korean music. K Pop, the globally popular music genre from South Korea, consisting dance-pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock, hip-hop, R&B, has churned out dozens of pop bands and with time, the number is growing. The Korean Cultural Centre recently had its third edition of KPOP 2014 festival in India and found two singers and one dance group who will represent Mumbai at the finals in Delhi on August 30. The first place was won by Namrata Kale who sang a song by Lee Hi – ‘1234’ while the second place was won by Jeet Dasgupta who sang a song by K.Will – ‘Please Namrata Kale, winner of the contest, with the Consul General of Korea, Seok-gu Jang.

The Mumbai regional rounds would not have been possible without the support of the Seokgu Jang, Consul General of Korea, who has been the driving force behind promoting K-Pop. Speaking to the ADC, Seok-gu Jang stated, “It is the 3rd time this event is being organised in India and the first time in Mumbai. This time, it is happening on a much larger scale across many cities in India so we have regional rounds in Chennai, Dimapur and New Delhi with the finals in Delhi next Members of Embody, which won in the dance group category, receiving their tropy month. kash (14), student of class XI, ran away from his home to escape the torture by his father. He was found loitering alone in his school uniform in the general coach of train no 11098 Poorna Express by the RPF of the Konkan Railway. He had left his school bicycle at Kundapura Railway station and had boarded the train so that he could go to Mumbai and from there travel to West Bengal where his relatives stay. The boy gave vague replies when questioned, so suspecting that he was lying, the RPF personnel took him off the train and brought him to the RPF outpost. The boy finally spilled the beans and informed them that he had run away from his home to escape the daily torture by his father. The RPF were conducting a drive to prevent eunuch menace in trains when they stumbled upon Akash. The RPF then informed the boy's parents and asked them to come to the RPF outpost. The visibly

shocked father said that he works as a car driver in the Gulf and was visiting home on a holiday. He said that he had scolded his son for not performing well in the exams and had restricted his wandering about in the evenings so that he could devote more time to his studies. However, the boy got angry at this and left the house without informing anyone. The boy was counseled by RPF personnel as he was not willing to go back with his parents after they requested the RFP to release their son. The RPF then called the President of the Parents Association of Schools of Bhatkal area, Radhakrishan Bhat. After being counseled by Bhat, the boy agreed to return home and promised that he would never repeat this. This act of the RPF was applauded by Bhat and the parents of the boy who were profusely thankful to the RPF Sub-Inspector Santosh Gaonkar and Constable Praveen K for reuniting them with their son.

rihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has stepped up its drive against tuberculosis (TB), calling for widespread awareness and new drug discovery to contain the spread of the disease in the metropolis. "Modern techniques and proper treatment can stop the advancement of tuberculosis. The need of hour is to create strong awareness about the disease, its causative factors and ensure complete and free treatment and services at Government hospitals," Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Sanjay Deshmukh told PTI on the sidelines of a workshop. The training workshop on TB was organised by BMC along with Global Health Strategies to highlight the critical challenges in TB control. Mumbai has created a 'Mumbai

Mission for TB Control Programme' which addresses tuberculosis-related issues aggressively. The financial capital has about 30,000-plus cases of drug sensitive TB and 6,000 plus of drug-resistant TB, an air-borne disease transmitted through fine respiratory droplets from an infected person. This vicious cycle of transmission and acquisition of infection can be curtailed if there is awakening in the health care provider and patients. The media can play a pivotal role for the same, former BMC Executive Health Officer Arun Bamne said. Deshmukh said BMC is committed to ensure that all primary health care services are given to TB patients. "We at Mumbai are going all the way, proactively to provide services not only to curtail the diseases and death due to tuberculosis but to prevent the further transmission of TB in Mumbai."

The beautifully lit Minara Masjid shines in all its glory to mark this auspicious occassion for the Muslims.

I

FEASTING AFTER THE FAST

ts’ Ramzan time again and the Muslim community invites one and all to share in their bountiful iftaars with mouth-watering treats. Our photograher Azad Shrivastav took a stroll along Mohammad Ali Road and Minara Masjid, where treats like gurda (kidney) skewers, kaleji (liver) and boti (chops) jostle for space, as well as the attention of customers, with grilled bater (quail), tandoori chicken and bheja (brain) fry, for the more adventurous eaters. A little ahead, at Noor Mohammadi Restaurant, one can find the signature nalli nihari, haleem and white biriyani. Suleman Usman Mithaiwala (his name says it all), the king of all things sweet, offers delicious malpuas, phirni, aflatoon and selection of assorted halwas. Surti Bara Handi, in Bohri Mohalla, offers a selection of 12 pots with simmering gravies like paya (trotters), nalli (marrow), pichda (ox tail), topa (ox hump) and boti. Still at Bohri Mohalla, one can end this gourmet session with a bowl of custard apple icecream at Taj Ice Creams. The best part about these Ramzan feasts is, the whole city, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and others, gets to indulge in these specialised culinary creations.

This festival is not only known for the the greasy meat and sweets. Healthy, rich dry fruits are also on the market. No meal is complete without the dessert. In this case it’s the the greasy malpua, phirni, aflatoon and a selection of halwas.

If you are the tandoor and kabab type of person, this guy has it all - shami, sheekh, tandoori chicken, kalmi and the works.

T Police submits report on Salem’s pic with ‘wife’

The Thane police on Wednesday submitted an interim report about its inquiry into the photograph of gangster Abu Salem and his alleged wife, published by sections of media. "We have filed an interim report on the photograph that appeared recently in sections of media to a TADA court. An Additional Commissioner level officer had conducted the inquiry," said CBI Special Prosecutor Deepak Salvi. Salvi also sought four weeks' time to further inquire into the matter.

Saibaba trust employee held for stealing

An employee of Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust in Shirdi was caught allegedly stealing gold and silver ornaments from the trust's counting hall, police said on Wednesday. During a check, the Sansthan's security guard found Dinkar Hanumant Dokhe (58) allegedly in possession of one gm gold coin, a 3 gm gold ornament and 36 gm of silver ornaments worth about Rs.12,000 while he was coming out from the counting hall where donations are kept, subinspector Sandeep Kahale said. Dokhe was arrested late on Tuesday night.

wo days after the 10,000 doctors belonging to the Maharashtra Association of Gazetted Medical Officer (MAGMO) under the state's public health department, who were on strike since July 1, on Monday called off their stir after meeting Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the state government regarding its failure to deal with the strike which reportedly led to the death of several patients during the week. This comes as the bench headed

by Justice Naresh Patil was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Gunratan Sadavarte which alleged that the state had failed to provide a mechanism to provide treatment to patients in Maharashtra government hospitals during the strike. It will be recalled that at an hour-long meeting on Monday at Sahyadri guest house, CM Chavan and public health minister Suresh Shetty assured the doctors of 'positively considering' some of their demands at cabinet meetings. But they said the state would not pay arrears to 1,700 doctors, which could cost the exchequer Rs.174 crore.According to the PIL,

“During the strike, more than nine lakh patients waited in queue for treatment but did not get any response from the doctors, due to which 80 patients died.” The petitioner, Sadavarte, cited a Supreme Court judgement which said that strikes are bad in law, a Delhi High Court verdict which described strikes as illegal as well as a Jharkhand High Court judgement which said that strikes amount to anti-national activity. The High Court asked the state of Maharashtra to respond to five issues and file an affidavit on what was its stand on the death of 80 patients, as alleged by the PIL, what preventive steps it

FYJC second merit list: 1,000 students still without seats Allotment of seats in the second merit list shocked many students as they were not allotted any college By Yatin Ingle

M

ore than 1,000 students across the city were unable to book a seat in their preferred colleges for First Year Junior College (FYJC), with the announcement of the second merit list. On Wednesday, the state education department declared the second list for the FYJC online admissions. The cut-off per cent this year has already gone up by around 10 per cent from that of the last year.

As per the online admissions process, a student has to submit names of 30 colleges zone-wise in the order of their preference. When students logged in on the website to check their admission status on Wednesday, most of them got a message stating, “Allotment not possible in the second merit list due to the preference and choice of the student.” This has scared students as they can now be allotted any of the 30 colleges that they have submitted.

A student, who did not wish to be named, said, “I scored 83 per cent but yet I have not got the college of my choice. Though I had preferred the best and reputed colleges, I am unable to get an allotment in those.” This year, around 1,60,947 students had applied for the online and offline FYJC admissions. In all, 88,935 seats have been allotted for the online admission process while 72,012 seats have been allotted for the offline admission process.

Teenager drowns in well at Vasai

Those students who are unable to get admissions through the online process can do so through the offline process. N B Chavan, Deputy Education Director, told the ADC that the list depends upon the preference of the students in the online admissions process. Students should not be tensed. All those who applied through the online process of admissions will be soon be allotted seats.”

et ready to shell out more to reach your destination while travelling in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) buses as the private transporter operating the utility has finally been allowed a slabwise hike in fares from the third to the ninth stage. The hike ranging from a minimum of Rs 3 to a maximum of Rs 6 came into force from Tuesday midnight. The frequent hike in diesel prices fast forwarded the decision of the Road Transport Authorities (RTA) to go ahead with the revised tariff. “The hike has been implemented slab-wise and is low for shorter distances for the benefit of the passengers,” said an official. However, the hike has not gone down well with commuters. With poor bus schedules, old and rickety buses that are well past their life, frequent breakdowns, they have umpteen reasons to complain about. “Even if the fare hike was inevitable, the administration must clearly list out the proposed improvements in service benchmarks that passengers would be entitled to in exchange for paying a higher fare,” noted a commuter. The public transport utility is run by Kestrel Infrastructure on a ten-year BuildOwn-Operate-and-Transfer pact. As of now, less than 47 out of the fleet of 55 buses ply in and out of the twin-city. While the MBMT boasts of operating on 33 routes, buses on around 12 routes are non-operational apparently due to shortage of buses.

The police officer said, “We had contact details of a few of the nine witnesses whose names had been shared with us by Wadia on July 2. Today we received contact details of

the rest from the Wadias.” In her complaint to the police on June 12, Zinta had accused Wadia of molesting, abusing and threatening her during an IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings on May 30 at Wankhede stadium. Wadia and Zinta continue to co-own Kings XI Punjab team despite their estrangement.Zinta had alleged that Wadia yelled at her and abused her before “grabbing my arm and pulling me.” The photos were apparently given to the police to substantiate the charge. Wadia has denied allegations against him, calling them “false”.Marine Drive police had registered an FIR against Wadia under IPC Sections 354 (assault or criminal force towards a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). Police have so far recorded statements of 12 witnesses named by Zinta including IPL's Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman, BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel and COO of Kings XI Punjab Fraser Castellino.

Mehta led the police to Leena and the latter led the police to Samant, the mastermind of the entire extortion racket. According to the police, Leena and Samant

resided in the same building. In 2012, Samant was arrested by the same unit of crime branch under the leadership of inspector Phatangre. During that time, Samant had extorted money from several businessmen and builders by using names of politicians like Gopal Sheety, Subhash Desai, Vinod Ghosalkar etc.

Investigations were on to ascertain his modus operandi and track the victims.” said Additional Superintendent of Police Sangramsing Nishaandar. Prima-facie investigations have revealed that Sawant has a history of committing such impersonations. He was arrested by the Vasai police when he was found masquerading as a Police Sub-Inspector in 2007, said an investigating officer. “While investigations are on, we have decided to act tough on dealers for their criminal negligence in handing over such sensitive material, including police stationery, to unscrupulous elements without carrying out an identity check,” confirmed, Senior Police Inspector Dhanaji Kshirsagar. A case under the relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against the fake cop who was remanded to police custody when produced before the district Sessions Court, Thane.

Shah, who delivered crucial Uttar Pradesh to BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, took over the reins of the party, marking Gujarat's hold over the ruling dispensation after Modi's elevation as Prime Minister. Shah, a close and controversial associate of Modi, was appointed to the top post in BJP at a meeting of the Parliamentary Board where incumbent Rajnath Singh resigned, after a tenure of one-and-ahalf years. Singh said he had resigned as he is now the Union Home Minister in Modi's government. He also made it clear that Shah was unanimously chosen as the new chief by members of the BJP's parliamentary board, a group of 12 top decision makers. It may be recalled that when Modi was Gujarat chief minister, Shah served as his home minister, and his confidant. He had to resign in 2010 over allegations that he sanctioned a fake encounter by

the state police. He spent three months in jail and then was asked by a court to stay away from Gujarat for about two years. He returned after the Supreme Court lifted the ban, to contest the 2012 state elections successfully.Shah faces murder charges for allegedly allowing the extra-judicial killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, a small-time criminal, his wife and a witness. The BJP leader says the charges are a political conspiracy. Singh also pointed out that there were baseless allegations against Nitin Gadkari also but later he got a clean chit. Things will become clear. Let the investigation carry on. The BJP's ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), reportedly believes that giving Modi a BJP president of his choice

will ensure good coordination between the party and the government. The Prime Minister later tweeted, “Amit Bhai started his journey as an ordinary karyakarta & has repeatedly proven himself through tireless hard work & determination”. Shah took over the charge of the president immediately. He had in May this year engineered a massive victory for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, delivering 71 of the state's 80 parliamentary seats in the general elections. The 50-year-old political strategist has his immediate task cut out; the party needs him to repeat the UP magic in the Assembly elections this year in Maharashtra as well as in Haryana and Jharkhand. Nevertheless, with Shah's appointment, Modi has cemented his grip on the party.

CCG – CST rail plans surface again By Vishnudas Sheshrao

he long-pending demand of the city to connect Churchgate to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), as well as a connection from existing railways lines to the proposed Navi Mumbai airport, has found answers in the 2014 Railway Budget presented by Union Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda in Parliament on Tuesday. Money has been allocated to carry out a feasibility study of these projects. If the projects are found practical and economical, then the project is bound to being slowly. Mumbai currently enjoys the status of commercial capital of India. If these projects are taken up and completed, it is bound to rise to the commercial capital of South Asia. The proposal of a 1 km rail connection between Churchgate and CST was first given by former Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2010. An estimated Rs 5.2 lakh was required at that time for the preliminary engineering and traffic survey. The most challenging

problem of the Churchgate – CST connection is that this area is most crowded with heritage structures which makes it difficult to obtain an NOC from the heritage committee. Railway officials have kept three options open – underground, surface, or ele-

vated track, depending on what the preliminary study reveals. Besides this, the Indian Railways has allocated funds to survey the proposed line between the Thane station and the site of the proposed airport in Navi Mumbai.

T was in my view the most important thing the railway minister said and it saddened me that it got the least attention. This was that after he finishes paying salaries and maintenance bills all he is left with is Rs.6 out of a hundred to spend on such necessities as modernization and improving safety standards. What disappointed me was that I did not hear him once mention that he would in future make better use of the vast tracts of urban land that belongs to the railways. If he HE Economic Survey presented to monetizes this land bank (to use the jargon Parliament by Finance Minister Arun economists favour) he could probably be so Jaitley is quite bright and it indicates the flush with funds that those dreams of bullet trains and railway stations that resemble airpossibility of better things to come in the ports could find it easier to become reality. Financing, insurance, real estate, and business services have grown at 12.9 per cent. A satisfactory happening is as much as 1.1 billion tourists have come to India. India ranks first in the production of grapes, banana, cassava, peas and papaya. With regard to milk production, India is a global leader with 132.43 mt in the year 2012-13. India ranks second with regard to fish production. With the country having plenty of milk, fruits, fish, foodgrains and oilseeds, it is difficult to explain why there is high food inflation. What we see is a picture of plenty, but on the ground we see a picture of shortage. In the land of plenty, there should be not have been high food inflation. There is something wrong in procurement and distribution. For instance, there is an acute shortage of godowns and corruption in the distribution system. Many of the godowns are leaking. And Goa ministers' statement that bikini must be banned on the beach will make tourists stay away from the splendid holiday resort. While there are robust highlights in the Economic Survey, on the ground, there is many a pathetic incredible happening.

and in larger quantities. At the moment the railways move around 30 per cent of freight traffic and that is abysmally small compared to its potential. Narendra Modi needs to keep reminding himself that he won the election because people voted for 'vikas' and 'parivartan'. Development and change and what they mean by this is that they usually mean by this is that they would like public services to change drastically. Wherever I traveled during the campaign, I met people who told me that they were going to vote for Modi because they believed that he would improve public transport, schools, healthcare and sanitation. He cannot do these things without making dras-

Expansive introduction Now why did he not consider this when he was making his Railway Budget? Could it be because it was put together mostly by the same officials who have done these things for every other government? Personally, I detected their signature in the expansive introduction, in the quotes from famous poets and in the dreary, rambling use of language. I detected the Narendra Modi touch in the mention of bullet trains and modern, clean railway stations. I detected it in the hints of privatization and FDI, but by and large this was a Budget that could have been presented by the last government's railway minister just as easily. Perhaps the prime minister has decided to take things slowly and not make drastic changes in case it frightens officials but he needs to realize soon that without drastic changes there will be no change at all.So in the case of public transport he has to privatize Air India as soon as he can and in the case of the railways he needs to bring in commercialization at every level. Personally, if I were the prime minister, I would announce that by the time of the next Railway Budget next February the railways would no longer be a government department. It would have become a corporation or several corporations: so no more railway budgets. Only when a commercial work culture is introduced will passengers on Indian trains get the services that rail travelers get in other countries. Only when this happens will the railways start moving freight more efficiently

Change in governance ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh tic changes in the way India is governed. And he will be prevented from making drastic changes every step of the way by high officials who hate change of any kind and who almost never use public services unless it is to get a special ward and special treatment in the best government hospitals if they fall sick. Their children never go to municipal schools and they never need to live outside Lutyens' Delhi so they have virtually no idea of how ordinary people live in this city. No idea of the broken roads and rotting garbage and no idea how hard it can sometimes be just to get something simple done like renewing your passport. Already in Delhi there are signs that most ministers have fallen into the clutches of the bureaucracy and are merely carrying on from where their predecessors left off. There is no doubt that on account of the prime minister's vigilance they come to office early and leave late in the evening but in the time they are in

Buddha is a person who lives without the mind; then he is not responsible. That's why in the East we say that he never accumulates karma; he never accumulates any entanglements for the future. He lives, he walks, he moves, he eats, he talks, he is doing many things, so he must accumulate karma, because karma means activity. But in the East it is said even if a Buddha kills, he will not accumulate karma. Why? And you, even if you don't kill, you will accumulate karma. Why? It is simple: whatsoever Buddha is doing, he is doing without any mind in it. He is spontaneous, it is not activity. He is not thinking about it, it happens. He is not the doer. He moves like an emptiness. He has no mind for it, he was not thinking to do it. He allows it to happen. He has no more the ego to resist. What Delhi bureaucrats excel at is misguiding new ministers into the maze of rules, regulations and practices that only they can negotiate because it is they who have created them. Modi himself has long years of administrative experience and so is unlikely to be trapped in this maze or any other, but his ministers will be easily trapped and this would be a disaster because the people who voted for acchchey din are angry and impatient for change. They did not vote for just a change of government they voted for a change in governance and they will not wait long before they start losing hope if they do not see change happening. Already on television chat shows these days have begun to appear defeated Congress MPs who cannot resist sneering about how there is no sign of good times. Already there are demonstrations in the streets of Delhi against prices and the increase in rail fares and already the Lok Sabha has become a place where a small caboodle of MPs manage to make the business of lawmaking impossible by using street fighting tactics. The new prime minister needs to move quickly if he wants to fulfill his promise of giving India the change and development he promised.

their ministries they seem mostly to do routine, meaningless stuff. Last week, I spent an hour waiting to see a minister and in this time noticed that the others who waited to see him were mostly people who wanted a favour of some kind or other. An experienced minister would have ensured that his time was not wasted in this way but since most of Modi's ministers are new they allow themselves to be guided by bureaucrats who are happiest when they drown their minister in useless tasks and mountains of files. The prime minister himself has too much on his plate to monitor what his ministers are up to, but when he comes back from Brazil he would do well to organize a workshop or an orientation course for his cabinet colleagues. They need to be taught how to find their way out of the layers of red tape that their officials will truss them in and they need to be warned to beware of naysaying bureaucrats who stand in the way of any change, leave alone drastic change.

THE Railway Budget for 2014-15 envisages bullet trains which would take a long time and would also consume huge funds of the government but benefit only a few elites. The pertinent question, therefore, is whether it is wise enough to divert precious limited funds and resources towards such trains when the monetary stringency is acutely felt by our Railways. It is imperative that the available resources are deftly put to use for overall development of the Railways with clean compartments, platforms and toilets to start with while speeding up the existing trains to 120 km/hour. The food, while travelling, is important and all care should be taken to ensure that the passengers have access to hygienic food, water and beverages. Privatisation of catering or other services may not be the only way out of problems and may result in exploitation instead of providing viable and lasting solutions leaving the passengers in the lurch in the bargain. The compartments and toilets of all classes including first AC are stinking with rats, bugs and cockroaches being ubiquitous and hence merits all the focus of the Railways in the first place for refurbishment with full steam on top-most priority and this brooks no further delay. Passengers are assets and not liabilities to the Railways. The public who dirty the platforms or trains should be se-

It was a 'Black Tuesday' on Rail Budget day as not much except a few routine announcements were read out by the railway minister. The 'acche din' (good days) promised by the new government will take time and people should have patience and give PM Narendra Modi reasonable time to work in that direction. Today, 'fly by night' operators are back in the markets and investors should avoid investing in such stocks many of whom are defunct companies who are not even existing. Massive falls in markets should be used as a buying opportunity to get into fundamentally strong scrips giving good dividend for the long term. Denied its due THE government denying the Congress the post of the Leader of Opposition is grossly unreasonable since it is the largest single party in the Lok Sabha. Unfair comment IN a report titled 'Stop sale of tobacco products in defence canteens' (ADC, Jul 9), Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi says that soldiers are lured into drinking and smoking habits at the cost of the tax-payers' money. While Health Minister Harsha Vardhan means well in asking for a ban on sale of tobacco products in the defence canteens, Dr Pankaj's quote is rude and unfair. One, the defence personnel themselves are tax payers too. Two, they deserve much more services and salaries than they are being offered at the moment. However, they never complain, unlike a lot of other civilians, who often evade taxes. The least we could all do for our soldiers is refrain from making such unfair statements, and show them some respect.

AWESOME FEAT! Providing a feast to its fans, Germany defeated Brazil 7-1 in the FIFA semi-final held on Tuesday. THE shell-shocking defeat of Brazil by Germany (7-1) was mortifying. One of the most reputed, football-loving nations, was put in a miserable performance breaking the hearts of 200 million Brazilian fans and many more admirers like me globally. The Brazilian game was a nightmare and I was relieved when it’s worst-ever international performance ended. Nevertheless, it is important for Brazil to put this humiliation behind it, and analyse the reasons for the unfortunate debacle and take corrective action. Brazilian team needs to focus on delivery and not on hype. The team was shaky even when Ney-

The German team rammed through the Brazilian team, as if the latter was a university soccer team. It was a massacre. This is the weakest Brazilian team to play the World Cup, relying inordinately on a 22-year-old, young and fragile player like Neymar. Brazil has to develop its attackers, strikers and defenders. It cannot depend on one or two stars. The whole team has to deliver. Individual brilliance is not enough. — Rajendra K Aneja, Dubai

Goa church wants IFFI not to clash with St Francis’ exposition P

ANAJI: Goa Church wants the dates of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2014 to be revised so that it does not clash with the decennial exposition of St Francis Xavier's relics. "If these two events (IFFI and exposition) do not clash, then that would be an ideal situation. Government must think seriously that there is another important event happening with IFFI in the state," Fr Alfred Vaz, convener of St Francis Xavier Relics Exposition committee, told PTI on Wednesday. The exposition would be held from November 22, 2014 to January 4, 2015 while IFFI is scheduled from November 20-30 this year.

Security concerns are high during the days when there are more policemen for IFFI while very few are posted at Old Goa, where the exposition is scheduled, Fr Vaz said. "This creates fear about the security for the event. We would appreciate if the government shifts IFFI dates so that they don't clash with the exposition," he said. The church has already petitioned the state government on this issue in the past, he said. "We hope that the government takes maximum care about security of pilgrims arriving here and all the security concerns are addressed," he said. The organisers expect 50 lakh pil-

grims to attend the decennial exposition of the relics at Old Goa, which is nine kms away from Panaji where IFFI is scheduled. Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), a nodal agency to host IFFI,

had earlier ruled out rescheduling of the festival. ESG vice chairman Damodar Naik had said that the IFFI dates were already finalised and won't be changed.

Its impact moves beyond the four walls of a room and apart from spreading peace and our message to the audience, theatre also helps evoke deeper emotions. A theme such as gender sensitisation is easy to talk about in a forum, or through a presentation. However, since theatre involves enacting events, it resonates more powerfully with the audience.

that

What message would you want to give people across the city when it comes to making gender sensitisation a focal point? My message would be to think, reflect and act. We tend to be so busy leading our lives, that the roles of women and men are often taken for granted. Women are traditionally perceived as homemakers and we have certain stereotypical expectations from them. For instance, during Diwali, it is a given that the house will be decorated by a woman. Our aim is to challenge these stereotypes and spread more awareness about this issue. Gender sensitisation in a nutshell Simply put, gender sensitisation involves encouraging more and more people to perceive others in a gender neutral manner, without holding stereotypes for each gender against them. To elucidate, it means not expecting only women to do household work, love the colour pink and to shop incessantly and not expecting men to be rough and tough and the sole breadwinners of their family.

The skirt on this outfit is gorgeous and the bodice gets a thumbs up too, but those gloves look terrible. We don’t like the thickset straps on the bodice either and although we know it was made for the runway, it’s not as flattering as it should be. The colour combination is a hit though.

Rani may have been trying to rock the ripped jeans trend that’s back in style, but it’s a big miss. Her top knot is cute, but we’re not fans of the jeans or the bright shoes. We like her jacket though. She gets an A for the effort!

Worried that you’re going to be left with nothing to wear if the clothes in your trendy wardrobe suddenly go out of style? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you what timeless classics you should stock up on

F

ashion is fickle. One minute, you’re the trendiest girl in the room, with your flared bell bottom jeans and the next, you’re so last season. While trends change quicker than seasons do, there are a few items that have been the epitome of style for decades, and we don’t see that changing any time soon. Take a look at what you must have in your wardrobe.

oh-So-white Do you have a white shirt in your closet? A buttondown shirt is not only a fashion must-have, it’s also been in style for generations. Whether you’re going old-school and wearing it with a pair of slacks or jeans, pairing it with a pencil skirt or just over a dress, this is one style that we don’t see going out of fashion.

Shield your eyeS Did you know that the popular wayfarers have been in style since the 80s?! If you don’t already have a pair, splurge a little on these because they’ll never become an accessory wear just for one season. Pick a colour you know you’ll still love in five years and you can rock it no matter where you are, how old you are or what you’re wearing!

While boyfriend-cut jeans, skinny jeans and bootleg jeans swing back and forth on lists of what’s in style and what’s not, a wellfitted pair of jeans with a straight cut, are never out of style. Comfier than formal trousers, but not so casual that you can’t wear them to a semi-formal occasion, you can stock your closet with these without a worry, as they’re not going anywhere.

Get a little dreSSy Sure, we’ve seen this morph into the little red dress, the little white dress and most recently, the little yellow dress. But, after colours go out of style and when you need something classic to fall back upon, out pops the fool-proof LBD, which has been worn by film stars for ages. If you don’t already have one in your closet, it’s time to get one!

pencil in Some Style Pencil skirts, especially high-waisted ones, have been in style for decades. The mini and the maxi lengths come and go and skater skirts can’t be worn after you cross a certain age — but pencil skirts are here to stay. No matter how old you are, get one in a classic, solid colour. You can dress it down with a sleeveless top and flats, or dress it up with high heels and some sparkly jewellery.

a blaze of faShion If you’ve adopted your mother’s old blazer to pair with your trousers or pencil skirt to work,

We really don’t know what to say about this look, Poonam. It’s not black and white, it’s not multi-coloured — and yet, it’s both, coupled with some terrible, beige coloured flats and sheer sleeves. She looks like she got dressed in a hurry.

Those maroon shoes would have looked so much cuter without the tassles on top. Her outfit is cute, but we’re not fans of the almost-sheer vest she has on top of her crisp white shirt and her eye makeup is a little overdone.

you know what we’re talking about. You may have to remove the excessive shoulder pads (though these seem to be sneaking back in style too) from very old ones and you may want a more tailored cut, but blazers are one item that you can safely have in your closet, without them ever going out of style.

diamondS are forever Forget the crystal of the month and give platinum a skip. Investing in diamonds will never be a mistake. While their value swings back and forth, they will always represent glamour — and we’re sure you know that they’re a girl’s best friend! Diamond studs in particular, are earrings that have been in style for as long as we can remember.

Subtle SweaterS Cardigans are a godsend, especially in our weather. They’re not so thick that you’ll feel hot, but are warm enough to keep you warm

and cosy on a slightly chilly day. Buy them in different colours and you can add a stylish touch to any outfit, through the year.

beSt heel forward Forget platforms, wedges and kitten heels — black or red stilletto pumps are an absolute classic. They flatter all body types, make your legs look longer and can dress up even the simplest of looks.

necK up It doesn’t matter what material they are made of, what colour they are or whether it’s a dress, a top, or a sweater. Turtlenecks are great for winter, super comfortable and very flattering, especially if you want to accentuate your bust. They’re a timeless style, that you won’t regret investing in.

4. colour me much For a pop of colour, opt for these trousers from Bebe, available on Majorbrands.com. Combine them with a basic, plain tee and sneakers for an effortless, yet stylish look. price `6,999

Floral prints are a great way to rock this trend. Remember that light shades make them look too boudoir-like (yes, we understand the irony, but you don’t want to end up looking like you just stepped out of bed, do you?), so opt for brighter colours such as blue and orange. This is one of the reasons we love this trend — you can keep it simple or dress it up and still look stylish. Pair boudoir pants with wedges and a bright coloured blazer over a simple, white top. But, make sure that you do not tuck in your top, as it will look horrible, to say the least. To make the look less formal, you can opt for a denim jacket and a pair of heels. This is one of the simplest ways to rock this trend. Just keep your accessories to a minimum. You don’t have to avoid them completely though. A simple necklace or a brightly coloured bracelet will help accentuate the look.

a funKy tee

A dark, solid coloured pair of boudoir pants will go great with graphic or slogan T-shirts. Pair them with wedges and a cute handbag and you have a great casual look. Remember to keep your hair open and avoid wearing any makeup, except the bare essentials.

>> With a white top and black heels, Kristen Stewart looks uber-cool in her simple, black boudoir pants

5. breezy comfort These linen trousers from Zara are perfect for a just out-of-bed look. They look super comfortable and the peach hue adds a refreshing twist to them. Pair them with a white top and flats for a casual look. price `2,290

Sara loren

We seem to have caught Sara in a rather uncomfortable pose. We don’t know what her leg is doing, but it just makes her outfit look torn. It’s far from sexy and the colour isn’t exciting either. Her hair and makeup is dishevelled and she looks very messy on the whole.

vedic line eucalyptuS & roSemary face waSh

My initial impression of Vedic Line’s new face wash was an iffy one, for the simple reason that none of the two prominent ingredients, eucalyptus and rosemary, are blue in colour, while the face wash is. A little investigation revealed that the blue colour is due to an ingredient called ‘Color Brilliant Blue’ — a type of food colouring. In terms of effects, the face wash impressed me. It ensured blemishfree skin, which felt refreshed and smooth after each wash. After using it for a few weeks, my skin was noticeably clear and felt really fresh. The best effect, however, has to be its ability to get rid of excess oil and prevent your skin from getting oily quickly. While I have a problem with the artifical blue colour (I don’t see the point), I wouldn’t mind using it on a daily basis. price `190 for 200ml where Cosmetic stores across the city rating ***

Signing off T

he first few hours of your work day should be the most productive ones. However, if you didn’t wind up efficiently the previous day, you will be spending your entire morning dealing with stray issues and making lists, which will eat away at your time and use up precious energy. Follow these simple tips at the end of each day to ensure that you get the most out of the next day, without squandering away precious time and resources.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014

If your work day is chaotic, where every day seems worse than the previous one, you will find yourself swamped with calls and buried under paperwork at the end of each day. To tie up loose ends and bring a little order to your schedule, Shirley Mistry gives you a few tips >> Make a to-do-list to review when and how you will complete your unfinished tasks, so you don’t have a pile of files lying on your desk the next day

If you have to walk in to office every morning and face a desk that is piled high with papers, scattered post-its, empty coffee cups (eww!) and pens in disarray, you are not going to be motivated to work. The clutter on your desk weighs you down mentally as well as physically, and you will end up spending your peak work hours sorting through the junk, instead of getting a chunk of work done. So, clear the clutter from your desk at the end of each day — we assure you that it won’t take you more than 10 minutes and it will save you from an unpleasant sight the next morning. While you’re at it, sort emails into folders and label them to ensure that you don’t lose important communication. Doing this daily will ensure that you don’t have hundreds of mails to sort through, the next time that you are looking for something.

assEss your to-do list Towards the end of the day, go back to your to-do list and see what tasks you have finished, which ones are half-done and which ones remain undone. Review and make a plan of how and when you will complete your unfinished tasks, so that you don’t fall behind on your schedule. If you have a few small tasks left, reviewing your list at the end of the day will give you the chance to finish them off quickly before you leave, instead of adding them to the next day’s list. It also gives you ample time to arrange for resources and followup with colleagues in a timely manner, if your list features delegated work.

a perfect Lemon panna cotta

A panna cotta is a no-bake dessert that looks complicated, but can be perfected with a few tricks and tips. Shirley Mistry tells you how to whip up the dessert in five, simple steps IngredIents l Zest and the juice of 2 lemons. l 2 cups heavy cream. l 1 cup whole milk. l ½ cup sugar. l 7-9g powdered gelatin. l ¼ tsp lemon extract.

Be prepared!

The thought of getting robbed can make anyone shudder. So, read our tips to prevent a robbery and find out how to deal with it, if it does happen, says Yamini Walia

Y

ou can be robbed anywhere, at any time... scary thought, isn’t it? Living in a city like Mumbai, you need to be prepared for any untoward incident. Whether your house has been broken into while you were away, or you were robbed in person, a burglary can give you sleepless nights and leave you feeling scared and paranoid. Instead of letting fear take over, it’s important to take necessary precautions and deal with the theft as unemotionally as possible. Here’s how to deal with the situation:

ImmedIate precautIons If you discover that you’ve been robbed, make sure that you take the following steps immediately: l It goes without saying that you have to call the police, the second you realise that you have been robbed. It might sound like the most obvious thing to do, but most cases don’t get reported because victims think that it is pointless to contact officials. As soon as you have registered your complaint, take a copy of the report to your insurance provider to claim compensation for the objects that are missing. l If you were out when the burglary took

place, don’t enter your home before the police arrive, as the burglars might still be inside. Even if they are gone, resist cleaning up so that you don’t end up tampering with the evidence. l It’s difficult to immediately round up the valuables that you have lost. So, make a list to keep a tab of what has been stolen. Keep updating the list as and when you find things missing.

secure your home Getting robbed means that your house isn’t secure. So, you need to take steps to prevent a similar incident from happening again in the future. In fact, even if you haven’t been robbed, these are good tips to enforce: l Always bolt your doors and lock your windows properly before leaving home. Also, make sure that your personal items aren’t visible through the windows. l If you have security cameras in your building, we suggest that you make sure that they are well-maintained. They need to be in working condition to ensure your security. l The first thing that people are going to ask you, after you have been robbed, is if you have renter’s insurance and you are going to feel really stupid if you say no!

So, get renter’s insurance through your bank or add it to your car insurance. You don’t want your landlord to charge you for the lost items, do you?

emotIonal healIng It will take time for you to recover from such an incident, but keep these tips in mind to speed up the process: l Rest for a few days to calm your mind. Don’t go back to work immediately, your boss will understand and let you take a day off to get your thoughts back in order. l Don’t try to be Sherlock, Dexter or Castle by attempting to investigate the crime yourself. It’s an emotional time for you and your family, so leave it to the police, to avoid any further damage. l Make sure that you know your neighbours well, as they are the ones who will help you, if you land in a similar situation in the future. l Try to concentrate on other important things, in order to distract yourself from the incident. Don’t exhaust yourself by over-thinking what has happened or what more could have gone wrong. If worse comes to worst, join a yoga class or meditate, as it will help you to calm your nerves.

method step 1: Pour the cream, milk and sugar into a saucepan and heat it. Wash the lemons and use a vegetable peeler to remove the rinds (be careful not to peel the bitter white part) and add it to the saucepan. Keep heating the mixture until it is just about to boil. step 2: Take the mixture off the heat, rest it for a minute, remove the lemon rinds and add the juice of both the lemons. Stir well before you put the mixture back on the heat, bringing it to a simmer. step 3: Dissolve the gelatin in ¼ cup cold water — this will take around 5 minutes. Then, take the mixture off the heat and whisk in the gelatin until it has completely dissolved. step 4: Stir in the lemon extract and pour the mixture into small bowls, ramekins or jars and refrigerate them until they are completely firm — this will take 2-3 hours. step 5: Garnish with fresh berries, a berry purée or edible flowers before serving it cold.

« dear graCe, i have a problem... Dear Grace,

I recently attended a party with my boyfriend where most of the people were my boyfriend’s friends. One of the guys there started dancing very close to me, and every time I moved away, he just moved closer to me! Eventually, I stopped dancing and sat in a corner to avoid him. When I told my boyfriend about it later, he said that I must have imagined it! Turns out the creepy guy is a good friend of his and, according to my boyfriend, is too decent to do

anything of the sort. I’m very angry, especially because my boyfriend doesn’t believe that it happened! What should I do? — Richa Malhotra, Santacruz (W) Dear Richa, It’s sad that your boyfriend doesn’t believe you! Stop talking to him for a while so that he understands that you are upset about it. When you do talk to him, make it clear that while the creepy guy may be his friend, you wouldn’t make up a story like this and he can’t brush it

aside! This is going to become an argument at some point, but don’t ignore it, because a situation like this may come up again and you need to ensure that he is on your side. Blindly supporting his friend and dismissing your protests as figments of your imagination is unpardonable — especially with something this serious. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

will either end in external aggression (violence) or internal aggression (depression). Your selfworth and self-esteem is at stake out here. You need to: 1) see a marriage counsellor with your wife as soon as possible; 2) be assertive and ask her to make a choice between you and her sexual exploits; 3) reflect on the fact that it would be better for your son to stay with one parent who is at peace with himself/herself instead of two parents who have no emotional connection at all.

Post-marital sexual dilemma

I am 28 yrs old, married four years back to a girl richer than me. I was forced into the marriage by my parents. She's not very good looking. Three years later I found her having relationship with other men too, before and even after my marriage. Am very nervous; I tried to talk her out of the extramarital relationships, in vain. We have a 2-yr-old son, which is the reason I don't want to divorce her. She has become bolder due to this and is continuing to flirt with her boyfriends. My family is not aware of my problem. We hear words like ‘Adolescence’ and ‘Puberty’, in the context of sexual development of children. I am not very clear about the exact meaning of these words and the difference between the two. I also want to know what is the exact age group of these stages. ADOLESCENCE is the French word derived from ‘adolescere’ which means growing up. It is simply a transition stage from childhood to adulthood. The beginning of adolescence is known as puberty. It is the time of life when sex glands become functional. Adolescence is the time of life between puberty and adulthood. Scientifically it is defined as a period of change, which everyone goes through from biological immaturity to

maturity. Adolescence is the age from 10 to 19 years. In girls, it may begin as early as 9 or 10 years. In boys it starts around 12 or 13 years. During adolescence there are rapid physical as well as psychological (emotional) changes. The physical changes precede psychological changes. We change from girls and boys into women and men. CHINMAY MANDLEKAR AS

TV TATTLE ‘90 Day Fiancé’

‘SANT TUKARAM’! Chinmay Mandlekar is one of the young turks of Marathi entertainment – plays, movies or TV shows, writing and acting in them as well. His news TV serial 'Tu Majha Saangaati' based on Tukaram Maharaj will air on July 11 at 7.30 pm on ETV Marathi. We spoke to the dynamic NSD graduate about his new show and he had some interesting things to tell us.

Many actors have portrayed Sant Tukaram, an ardent saint of Maharashtra, the recent being Jitendra Joshi in a film directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni? How is your Tukaram different? Our show will concentrate on Tukaram's life before attaining sainthood and then more on his family life after getting married to Avali in a child marriage. Subsequently the birth of his children and his professional life as a trader will be focused on. The audience will also get to see a lot of Avali. Will there be abhangs and bhajans in the show? Yes. Tukaram belonged to the Warkari sect and worshipped saints like Nyaneshwar and Namdev. He sang their abhangs and bhajans and then even started singing some of his own compositions. Who is playing Avali? A child artiste is playing the child Avali, but who will play the elder Avali is still not known. This child artiste is very talented and professional, and even I got to learn a few things from her. What are the other credits of the show? The director is Sangeet Kulkarni and the writer is Shirish Latkar. How many episodes are we looking at? The channel and the producers will take a call on this.

So tell us how you got selected for the show? Some detractors opined that I was not suitable for the show. There were a few murmurs, but I auditioned for the role and ultimately I got selected for it.

How have you prepared for the role? I read a lot about the saint and even watched the movies based on the saint. But this film is like a bio-pic of the saint and if we take a bio-pic of some great men like Gandhiji, for example, who has had many films or shows based on him, there are bound to be some good points and some bad points, because they are grey characters and this is bound to reflect in the show. You are busy on stage and in films and even writing and acting in TV shows? How do you manage all this? Right now my entire focus is on this show and I will not take up any more assignments now. What's next? I have a film coming up like Gajendra Ahire’s ‘Swami Public Ltd’ and a bio-pic on ‘Lokmanya Tilak’.

oordarshan Mumbai has been in the forefront in creating events and programmes which are meaningful and connect with society at large. Agriculture, education, information and entertainment programmes form a part of Doordarshan’s DNA. Sahyadri has been creating potential programme content on girl child education, women empowerment, health awareness, inspirational programs for the youth and informative programmes designed to strengthen the farmers in rural India. For the first time in the history of Indian television, DD Sahyadri has decided to launch a unique programme to create understanding among the people on the noble cause of organ donation. TLC presents a brand new series '90 Day Fiance' that offers a never-beforeseen look into the world of international dating and matrimony. Using a unique 90-day fiancé visa, the K-1 visa, four women will travel to the US to live with their overseas fiancés for the first time. The couples must marry before their visas expire in 90 days, or the visiting fiancés have to return home. In '90 Day Fiance' the women will have to overcome language barriers, culture shock and skeptical friends and family. '90 Day Fiance' will premiere this July, every Wednesday at 10 pm.

Coming together of 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' and 'CID' has created a new genre – ‘Comic Thriller’. So we have a gun-wielding and trench coat-wearing Dayaben trying to take over crime control from Daya of CID. “It’s important to create curiosity and intrigue in a show. If we keep going at the same pace then viewers get tired. So this is the newest twist wherein the longest running comic serial joins hands with longest running detective show,” says Asit Kumarr Modi.

Fatal attraction

Shirina Singh, who plays Pakhi in Zee TV’s popular show ‘Ek Mutthi Aasman’, in an interesting upcoming track, her character turns into an violent obsessive lover and attempts to win the affections of her Raghav Singhania (Ashish Chowdhry). Shirina says “When I was told that my character Pakhi will turn into a psychotic lover, the first name which hit my mind was that of Urmila Mantodkar’s convincing portrayal of Ria Jaiswal in 'Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya'. Playing an obsessive lover is not that easy, I had to understand the complexities of the character.”

Sukhvinder Singh ousted

Ever since 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' first launched, it has been singer Sukhvinder Singh who has awed the jury by showcasing his learnings week-upon-week. And now, five weeks in, the singer has finally called it a day when he found himself pitted against Mouni Roy in the bottom two, leading to his exit from the show. Even though Sukhvinder Singh worked extremely hard to on his dancing skills, eventually his journey had to come to an end. A visibly satisfied Sukhvinder accepted his elimination graciously and commented, “I enjoyed my stint on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa'. It gave me the opportunity to learn different dance forms.”

Now a DD programme on organ donation The following participant’s experiences and their life changing stories apart from doctors, NGOs, and others who are connected in this entire chain of organ donation, forms a major part of this awareness programme. Special AVs have been created of the organ recipients and donors participating in this programme. 1) Prashant Jain, Nisha Jain – cadaver donor. Ratnadeep Motiwale – cadaver recipient, Manoj Patel – liver recipient; (cousin) Manilal Patel – liver donor (live). 2) Abhimanyu Salunkhe – cadaver donor. Bhimrao Patil – cadaver recipient. Dynaraj Patkar

– kidney recipient; (sister) Gauri Pore – kidney donor (live) The innovative programme has been conceptualised and designed by Mukesh Sharma, Additional DG, DD Mumbai, who believes that sensitising people and educating them to donate organs is the need of the hour and has, himself, pledged to donate his organs for the cause of humanity. Actor Amir Khan, who has pledged to donate all his usable organs, came specially to DD Mumbai to record his appeal on organ donation which will form a part of this programme entitled 'Naate Janmaantariche'.

rent Bridge: Industrious bowling and athletic fielding helped England restrict India to 259-4 on a lifeless Trent Bridge pitch on the first day of the fiveTest series. In conditions more akin to Nagpur than Nottingham, India opener Murali Vijay batted throughout the day to score an accomplished unbeaten 122, and captain Mahendra Dhoni was 50 not out in an unbroken partnership of 81. But England's quartet of seamers never lost heart, responding well to a difficult morning as skipper Alastair Cook was rewarded for attacking field placings with quick wickets after lunch and tea. Stuart Broad was the pick of the bowlers with 1-26 off 19 overs at his home ground, while there were two wickets for James Anderson and one for Liam Plunkett. Ben Stokes, recalled in place of Chris Jordan, bowled 19 economical overs. Once again, however, the absence of frontline spinner from the hosts' attack was exposed, as Moeen Ali conceded 50 off nine overs and was dismissively crashed for a straight six by Vijay in the final hour of the day. India started in emphatic fashion on the first day of the fivematch series, with Murali Vijay hitting three boundaries off the first over bowled by James Anderson. It was a sign of things to come from Vijay as he went on to hit 92 off 176 balls, with 17 fours, resuming the evening session with Ajinkya Rahane (32) on an unrewarding pitch. On a flat morning England's pace attack had struggled to impose themselves against an aggressive India batting display, with Anderson taking the solitary wicket of Shikhar Dhawan (12) before lunch when an outside edge was well-taken by wicketkeeper Matt Prior. The hosts came out a different side after lunch and took two wickets for one run in the first three overs of the afternoon session. BRIEF SCORES: India 1st innings 259/4 in 90 overs [Murali Vijay 122, MS Dhoni 50, James Andersen 2/70] vs England.

The victors led 2-0 at half-time. The Goans were well served by Naushad who struck a brace and Manoj Lokhande who added the third to ensure they emerged triumphant. Central Bank who tried their best and put up a good fight could manage just one goal scored by J. Singh early in the second half. The final saw both teams adopt a positive attacking approach and

engage in a keen tussle for supremacy before the Goans produced two quick goals midway through the opening session grab the advantage. In the 12th minute Naushad found the target and four minutes later Lokhande struck the second to give the Goan outfit the upper hand. Central Bank managed to pull one back when J Singh successfully converted a penalty corner immediately after the change of ends. But, Goan Sports did well to add another goal, once again through Naushad to regain their two goal advantage, which they maintained till the end of the match to seal their victory.

Padukone not in favour of fivegame scoring system

BANGALORE: Former badminton star Prakash Padukone voiced his reluctance to the idea of changing the existing three-game format to explore the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) proposal of five games of 11 points each. "I don't agree to the decision of the Badminton World Federation to test a best of five games scoring system from August," he told reporters after launching Tata Capital Super Shuttlers 2014 Talent Hunt here. Top players such as Lin Dan from China and Denmark ace Jan Jorgensen have also made their displeasure clear to BWF's fivegame idea. "BWF is probably making the changes to make the sport more faster and TV-friendly to attract more sponsors but wouldn't agree to it," Padukone said. He said that the federation should focus on developing the skills of marketing the sport rather than eyeing sponsors through format change. "It is not that you change the format, and sponsors will come in ... Instead it is all about how you market the sport. It will not so tinkering with points system. People who can't market the sport they are into this business," he said.

BRAZIL BULLDOZED Germans blitz of four goals in the span of six minutes sends Brazil into mourning with 7-1 humiliation

B

ELO HORIZONTE: A rampaging Germany destroyed five-time champion Brazil's reputation as a football powerhouse with a 7-1 humiliation to enter the World Cup final for record eighth time and send the football crazy host country into stunned silence and national mourning here today. It was a devastating day for Brazil who were playing a highly emotional semifinal without injured superstar striker Neymar as they were steamrolled into submission by the Germans who

took revenge of their 0-2 defeat in 2002 summit clash in Japan in the only other World Cup clash between the two sides. Thomas Mueller opened scoring in the 11th minute before goals from Miroslav Klose (23rd), Toni Kroos (24th and 26th), Sami Khedira (29th) and Andre Schuerrle (69th and 79th) in front of the sea of heartbroken yellow clad Selecao fans at the Estadio Mineirao here. Oscar scored the consolation goal for Brazil in the 90th minute but it was all over by then as

Brazil ended their World Cup campaign at home under humiliating circumstances. Today's defeat was Brazil's biggest international defeat in their proud history and the home fans understandably booed them towards the end of the match as it turned out to be a day of shame for the host country. It seemed that the Brazillians have forgotten how to play football as they conceded five goals without reply in the opening half hour with the defence, without suspended captain Thi-

ago Silva, looked like even worse than an amateur club side. Klose became the highest scorer in World Cup history with his 16th strike today, surpassing Brazil legend Ronaldo's 15 goals. He also became the only player in history to play in four World Cup semifinals. But his tremendous achievement seemed to have been drowned in the din of the scale of humiliation of Brazil, the tournament favourites with the Selecao fans weeping in the open while some were seen stunned at the way their team was decimated by the clinical Germans. The collective psyche of the Brazillians has been living with the 'national tragedy' of 'Maracanazo', that defeat against Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, and it will have to be seen how much today's loss will impact the country which is hosting the tournament after 64 years. The Germans, who were playing in their fourth World Cup semifinal on the trot, killed the game in the first half itself with four goals coming in the space of seven minutes after the Muller opener with the Brazil defence torn apart by the speed and clinical finish by their European opponents. Mueller was left unmarked in the first corner of the match for Germany to slot home. Then the floodgates were opened with Klose scripting history as he scored in his second attempt after his first effort was parried by Brazil goalie Julio Cesar in the 23rd minute. Next minute, Kroos took Germany's lead to three. Mesut Ozil passed the ball to his captain Philipp Lahm, who served a teasing ball across the Brazil box. Muller missed but it found its way to Kroos, who hit a stunner past Cesar. Kroos made it a memorable day for himself with his second goal three minutes from his first strike. Khedira led the German counter-attack and passed off to Kroos for a simple tap-in. Khedira himself shot home in the 29th minute after a build up by Ozil and Klose as the Germans toyed with the Brazil defenders.

Thomas Muller scores off the corner after the ball drops to the unmarked No 13 in the middle of the area and the Bayern Munich man calmly side-foots it past Julio Cesar.

23'

Miroslav Klose scores to double Germany's lead and becomes the all-time World Cup scoring leader with his 16th goal. Julio Cesar saves Klose's first effort but he can only parry it away and the No 11 is first to the rebound to pass it into an empty net.

Germany's Miroslav Klose and Brazil's Luiz Gustavo fight for the ball during the semifinal clash in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

24'

Toni Kroos takes Germany's lead to three! Mesut Ozil passes to Philipp Lahm, who serves a teasing ball across the box. Muller misses but it finds its way to Kroos, who hits a stunner past Cesar.

26'

Kroos makes it four with his second goal in two minutes! The Estadio Mineirao is in stunned silence, with the exception of the singing Germany supporters. Khedira leads the German counter-attack and selfishly passes off to Kroos for a simple tap-in.

29'

Sami Khedira finishes Germany's fifth! A strong build-up with Mesut Ozil and Miroslav Klose on either side of the Germany No 6 spread the Brazil defence thin and Khedira is able to finish in the bottom corner.

69'

Andre Schurrle scores after a strong build-up from Germany, who now lead 6-0. The No9 calmly finishes from Cesar's six-yard area from Ozil's cross.

79'

Schurrle scores his second and Germany's seventh. The Chelsea frontman shoots from an acute angle and beats Cesar, the ball hitting the underside of the bar and settling into the net.

We have to win one more game: Klose MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014

Miroslav Klose

BELO HORIZONTE: With the clock standing at 19:28 local time on Tuesday evening, an unforgettable 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-final between Germany and Brazil had long since finished, yet the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte was still a hive of noise. Thousands of Germany supporters stood behind one of the goals and were chanting so loudly that their words were clearly discernible even in the inner depths of the stadium: “We want to see the team.”The travelling fans were longing for another glimpse of the heroes who had just written footballing history, having brushed aside the tournament hosts by half-time in such a manner that spectators everywhere were left incredulous. Germany steamrollered the five-time World Cup winners and were 5-0 up after just 29 minutes. The sense of disbelief among the German following was equalled only by the certainty that the game they were witnessing would be remembered for generations to come.“It’s an indescribable feeling,” Thomas Muller told FIFA after the final whistle, a broad grin spreading across his face. “We got off to a great start and when you’re 5-0 up at half-time against Brazil in Brazil then you know it’s something special. “Nobody was expecting that to happen. We hoped we’d get one or two chances because Brazil’s main strength is in attack. We need to let this all sink in now and then shift our focus to the Final. We want to win the trophy and we’re going to give everything to make that happen.” NOT OVER YET That Klose does not enjoy being in the spotlight was evident when he was the first to return to the pitch to party with the Germany fans, accompanied only by goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke. He took part in a countdown that launched a Mexican wave around the largely empty stadium. And just as the chants of the German fans had echoed through the arena, the match itself will continue to reverberate throughout world football, regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s Final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, where, according to Klose “we have to win one more game.”

‘THE WORST DAY OF MY LIFE’ B ELO HORIZONTE: Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said his side's stunning 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany in their FIFA World Cup™ semi-final on Tuesday had been the worst day of his life. "I think it was the worst day of my life, but life goes on," said the 65-year-old. "I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1 but I knew that risk when I took the job and life goes on so that is what I am going to do." Brazil were swept aside by a stunning start from the Germans as goals from Thomas Muller, Miroslav Klose, Sami Khedira and two from Toni Kroos put them 50 in front inside the opening half hour. Andre Schurrle added two more goals for the Germans after half-time before Oscar's late consolation for the hosts. "My message for the Brazilian people and fans is that we did what we could do and we did what we think was our best," added Scolari. "We lost to a great team with great skill that took six minutes to change the game with

four goals in an extraordinary manner. "Please excuse us for this mistake. We are sorry we could not get to the final and we will honour the team in the third-place playoff in Brasilia on Saturday." Scolari accepted responsibility for the defeat, but gave no indication as to whether he intended to stay on as Brazil coach after the tournament. "Who is the one responsible? I am. This catastrophic result can be shared with the whole group because that is what my players say and want, but I am the one who chooses the tactics, the lineup, so the person responsible for the result is me." Scolari asked for forgiveness from his countrymen after the historic result. "We ask for forgiveness," a shellshocked Scolari said after Brazil were torn apart 7-1 in their semi-final meltdown. "To the people, please excuse us for this negative mistake." The 2002 World Cup-winning coach took full responsibility for the performance.

Brazil stars struggle to explain shock scoreline

BELO HORIZONTE: Brazil's stunned football stars struggled to explain one of the biggest upsets in FIFA World Cup history after they lost their semifinal 7-1 to Germany on Tuesday. "It is difficult to explain the inexplicable," said 34-year-old goalkeeper Julio Cesar after the record defeat. "We had the worst game of our lives and Germany the best of their lives," added stand-in captain David Luiz who was at the centre of the defence that crumbled. "Until now everything had gone very well. We had been very strong. It is so unexpected," said Cesar. "Now we need to return

home and be comforted by our families." After Thomas Muller's 11th minute opener, Germany sealed their passage to an eighth World Cup Final with a stunning four-goal spree in six minutes just before the half hour mark. Miroslav Klose became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with his side's second of the evening. Sami Khedira and two apiece from Toni Kroos and Andre Schurrle made it 7-0 before Oscar's late consolation. "I am sorry for not being able to make the fans happy. We didn't win it and I ask for the forgiveness of all the Brazilian people," said Luiz.

We need to remain humble: Loew

B

ELO HORIZONTE: Brazil's emotional reaction to Neymar's injury played into Germany's hands as they inflicted a

record 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat, German coach Joachim Loew said on Tuesday. A fractured vertebrate suffered in their quarter-final win over Colombia ruled Neymar out and with captain Thiago Silva sus-

pended, Brazil fell apart on an emotionally-charged night. There were constant reminders of Neymar's absence at the Mineirao Stadium before kick-off with captain David Luiz and goalkeeper Julio Cesar clutching the Number 10 shirt bearing his name during a deafening rendition of the Brazilian anthem. But Loew says Brazil lost their cool which allowed Germany to score five goals in 30 incredible first-half minutes to put them in Sunday's World Cup Final. "It was important to meet this

passion and these emotions with calm, courage and with our own strength," said Loew whose side will now meet Argentina or the Netherlands in Sunday's Final in Rio de Janeiro. "They were shocked by our goals and it made the game easier for us. "Everyone did their jobs incredibly well and with total concentration. We played well going forward and combined superbly." But Loew said the Germans must stay humble despite inflicting Brazil's record international defeat on the hosts.

R

IO DE JANEIRO: Brazilians cried, cursed their president and covered their faces in shame after their beloved football team's humiliating 7-1 thrashing by Germany in the World Cup semi-finals. After the fifth goal, well before half-time, hundreds of people left their expensive seats at the stadium in the southeastern city here. A section of the crowd chanted obscenities against the players and President Dilma Rousseff, who during the cup had mostly enjoyed a reprieve from protests over the record USD 11 billion spent to host the tournament. The tears began well before the final whistle, with the third German goal in the first half causing children and adults to start bawling in the stadium and in public screenings across the continent-sized nation. As people streamed out, police reinforced security inside and around the stadium, but no incidents were reported there. Others around the country shouted at their televisions and abandoned public screenings as the Selecao suffered the biggest defeat of its 100-year history. "Neymar must be vomiting at home watching this disaster. The horror," said Marina Genova, 54, watching at a popular bar district in Sao Paulo, referring to Brazil's injured star. Amid the deluge of goals, a downpour only added to the already gloomy mood of thousands of fans in Brazil's

canary-yellow jersey at the official "Fan Fest" on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach. Two dozen fans scuffled, forcing police to intervene. In Sao Paulo, several buses were torched in a parking lot but police could not confirm whether the attack was linked to the defeat. Brazilians were already concerned about the team's chances after Neymar broke a vertebra in the quarter-final victory over Colombia. But they never thought it would be this bad. "This is a terrible match and Brazil without Neymar are terrible. I hate this match. It's embarrassing to lose like this," said Beth Araujo, 24, a biology student. "The only good thing is I think it will affect President Dilma in the election. But all our politicians are even worse than the team," she said.
