n a short sighted approach and to cover up the lapses and poor planning of the MMRDA, the BMC and the Traffic police had closed down a vital right turn at the Kurla end of the SCLR. This has now resulted in a daily loss of Rs 1.79 lakh due to excess expenses for the BEST, which is bearing the brunt of the fiasco being committed by all the three agencies. This has now been revealed in a reply by the BEST to RTI activist Anil Galgali, who also said that the BEST is now contemplating an increase in its fare by Rs 4 to recover the loss.Galgali had sought information from the BEST Undertaking regarding the losses being incurred due to the diversion being forced to be undertaken due to the closure of the right turn towards the Kurla (West). In his reply, Abhay Shelar, Assistant Depot Manger, informed that the closure of the right turn from the SCLR to Kurla Station has effected the distance and timings of 18 of its regular routes. are undertaken on these 18 routes from this route resulting a extra distance travel of 1834.3 km as the diversion has led to increase of distance by 1.3 km (1411 x 1.3 = 1834.3 km). The Undertaking incurs a cost of Rs 97.72 per km, resulting in a total loss of Rs 1,79,248 on a daily basis (97.72x1834.3 = 1,79,248). “The closure of the right turn towards the Kurla station has effected bus route nos - 37, 192, 183, 309, 310, 313 Ltd extra, 318, 320, 325, 326, 330, 332, 349, 365, 446 and 15. It has now proposed to the administration for approval to increase the bus fares by Rs 4 each from 121 stops on the routes of the buses playing on the route. I was also informed that the MMRDA, BMC and the Traffic department did not deem it fit to seek its opinion on the closure of the turn, also no suggestions or chance for raising objections was provided to BEST.” Galgali, also sought information from the MMRDA about the closure of the right turn. In its reply the MMRDA informed that the SCLR was handed over to the BMC on May

2, 2015, hence the information sought, be taken from the BMC. MMRDA also gave a copy of the letter from Traffic department dated May 16, 2015, in which it has mentioned that, on the instructions of the BMC, the traffic dept closed the right turn by installing Cove stones on May 6, 2015, it further mentions that due instructions from the Traffic Officer L Ward, Prataprao Dighavkar and the Additonal Com-

Galgali said, “The action taken by the BMC and the Traffic department is illegal as no notifications were issued for the same as no proper procedures were followed. This has also resulted in the loss of life of a woman, who met with the accident due to removal of the speed breaker after the closure. The said closure was done without application of mind by the authorities with a short sighted approached and has caused immense inconvenience to the local commuters also leading to loss of lives and daily losses for the BEST. Doc cheats medical goods supplier, police files civil complaint ture', instead of a criminal complaint. According to a complaint by a medical goods supplier, Yadav Shetty, who has now decided to approach the Mumbai Police Comissioner, claims that he is being cheated by Dr. Rajul Meswani and his team. “The hospital which was located at posh area of Juhu near Mithibai College had few notices pasted by banks as well for non-payments. Initially the billing of the patients was done by the hospital management. However, since the management was not clearing the dues the supply was stopped. However, I continued to provide medical products directly at the operation theatre to the patients admitted at the hospital on humanitarian grounds since I supplied products used mainly in operation surgery. During the course of time Dr. Rajul continued to keep me in confidence that my dues would be paid. However, later they claimed bankruptcy and shut the hospital. I along with my brother filed complaints at MIDC Police Station and Juhu Police Station. However, both the cases were initially shut down. With unknown reasons given by P.I. S Jadhav of MIDC Police for closure, the case was reopened only after I approached criminologist Snehil Dhall who sent them a notice. However, this time again they transferred the case to Juhu Police

Station without reason.” He further added, “A parallel complaint which was also in process at Juhu Police Station and unsigned statements were completed by sub-inspector Mete got shut since the said officer was suspended for corruption charges in a different criminal case. The case was transferred from Mete to one Mr. Lambete that was subsequently shut claiming it to be civil in nature. I had clearly mentioned in my statement that more than three different names were used by the hospital administrated and brand owned by Dr. Rajul to carry the fraud against many doctors, banks and suppliers. Since medical suppliers don’t have any union or association to blacklist such corrupt hospital, we struggle to maintain 100 per cent documentations since these hospitals charge upto 500 per cent of margin through our MRP supply.” The case is being evaluated by Snehil Dhall – a well-known criminologist, who told the ADC, “The easiest way to earn quick money is by not paying crores of rupees and converting criminal intentions into civil that allows police to reject cases of recovery. With a dramatic strategy of organised crime in the city, Yadav was cheated by Dr. Rajul Meswani and his team. The Juhu Police Station claimed that Dr. Rajul has mentioned in his statement that

he doesn’t know who 'Shetty' is and has never carried any transactions with me. However, he claims that the cheques given to Yadav were security cheques which bounced due to sudden deposit by Yadav.” Dhall further added, “I have been trying to convince the police officers that this case is of cheating due to non-payment of crores of rupees and use of fake identity. This doctor has several cases against him in the Andheri and Borivali courts and is an habitual offender. But the police has shut the case for the second time claiming it as civil in nature. The details in the statements were accepted differently by both the police stations of the same case. While the Juhu police shut the case and MIDC has yet not answered their course of action. MIDC and Juhu Police Stations both have many corporate cases of such fake identity, fraud, cheating and non-payment of services and products. However, the police mainly convert such Criminal Cases into Civil so that their jurisdiction changes. They never conduct detailed investigation that could possibly also lead to money-laundering and funding to other crimes due to which it becomes very difficult to process such crimes. Both the police stations were asked to take statements of the complaint. However, MIDC agreed to state all the transaction details

without adding the details of multiple identity used by the hospital and details of other fraud carried by the hospital on the same location. Whereas, Juhu Police Station didn’t accept to add transaction details. But after repeated arguments, they accepted to mention various names used by the hospital and other frauds complaints on the same doctor. Even the contradiction in Dr. Rajul’s statement that states he doesn’t know Shetty and later confirms the cheques were given as security against the medical products also indicated the intentions of fraud that was ignored by Juhu Police Station. Regardless, both the police stations rejected to note the details on the statements of Shetty brothers of the fraud noticeable on the cheques given to the suppliers. Yadav and Dhall, both claimed that they will not file civil case in the court since this is a criminal conspiracy of Dr. Meswani and group.” While repeated attempts by this newspaper to reach Dr. Meswani proved futile, when asked, sub-inspector Lambete of the Juhu police, who is presently the Investigating Officer (IO) in the case, told the ADC: “After studying the entire case, we have come to the conclusion that the case is civil in nature and so I have asked both the parties to approach the civil court in this matter.”

‘Social issues first’, says DCP Enforcement, Pravin Patil

S

ocial service branch known for raiding illegal bars in the city has started concentrating on sensitive and important social issues resulting in its breaking all time records in finding missing persons and rescuing children from begging rackets and child labour. The recent figures show the achievement in setting highest ever record in the rescue of kids. The figures suggest

that until July this year, the SS branch has registered 180 cases and rescued 346 children from begging rackets, whereas 302 cases were registered and 682 child labourers were rescued. DCP, Enforcement Pravin Patil said, "These children belong to our country and they too have a right to a bright future. In November last year we held a meeting that was led by city police chief Rakesh Maria. There was a healthy discussion on how these important issues can be dealt with. Post meeting we worked on enforcing steps which included acts such as

Juvenile Justice act, Child Labor act, etc. Further, tracking the missing persons after which we reached to the rescue of children working in begging rackets and as child labourers. “However this was not an easy task. The SS branch first identified the case records with missing persons bureau. The collected data was shared with the railways too and the deparments, including the railways worked together closely. “Earlier Social Service (SS) branch used to work on these Rescued important issues Children but were less 45 concentrated. 72 Several NGOs 124 used to approach the po346 lice and action would be taken. We simply changed the Rescued concept and deChildren cided that rather 538 than NGOs ap329 proaching us we 846 should ap682 proach the NGOs for child rehabilitation. This concept worked and our force began taking on units which made children work, and those engaged in child trafficking; several begging rackets were also busted. This requires regular reviews, motivating my men and bringing the importance of such issues to the notice of the force as these children too have right to a bright future. The rescued children are rehabilitated until their parents are contacted. The children are taken care of and we also invite NGOs working for the betterment of children to come forward and serve the rescued ones,” added Patil.

n his first reaction on the October 2014 assembly election results, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah is reported to have expressed displeasure that the party came to power with support of Shiv Sena. Addressing party cadres and leaders from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa at Rangasharda auditorium in Bandra West here, he urged them to keep a mindset of coming to power on their own. According to BJP sources, Shah also pulled up warring BJP ministers to desist from airing their disagreements in the open. Referring to the slew of allegations of corruption against some BJP ministers he also cautioned them and asked them to ensure that their image does not get BJP president Amit Shah flanked by party ideologue Dr Vinay Sahasrabudhe, state in-charge Saroj Pandey, CM Devendra Fadnavis and state president Raosaheb Danve lights the traditional lamp at the inauguration of the tarnished. Now, theft-proof fibre manhole covers F-North Ward instals fibre covers that can't be recycled or stolen By Priyanka Bhatt

M

umbaikars often stumble on open manholes in the city as these are a commo sight. Some covers of manholes are partially broken while some gape at anyone who walks by greeting them with a stench. This dilemma has been there for a considerably long time, as the covers, made of cast iron are stolen by thieves and sold

to scrap dealers to make a quick buck, thus creating a hazard for citizens. This problem, however, might end soon as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun installing new type of manhole covers. These covers are made of fibre and are as strong as the covers made of cast iron. These manhole covers cannot be recycled, hence reselling them to scrap dealers is out of question. Trushna Vishwasrao, Shiv Sena corporator from the FNorth ward, took the initiative of getting them installed in her

Around 20 theft-proof fibre manhole covers have been installed ward first. She says, “These covers are much stronger, and have no resale value. We have

been wanting to install such covers since a long time now, and finally the BMC has agreed to my initiative.” Vishwasrao also mentioned that production of these covers costs half of what the iron covers used to cost. “Especially during monsoons, we need to take care that all the manholes are covered. Even if they are stolen, the thieves will not be able to sell them,” she added. Around 20 manhole covers have been installed in FNorth Ward and as per demands from each ward, more will be installed, according to Vishwasrao.

n a move that could spell trouble for Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali range of herbal products, the state Forest department has chalked out ambitious plans to market 33 forest products from Chandrapur and Gadchiroli in the near future. Sources in the department speaking to ADC on condition of anonymity disclosed that a tumbler made out of

bark of the Pija tree in Chandrapur which is known for its curative properties in Diabetes will be marketed and sold at just Rs 150 as against the ones sold by the likes of Patanjali Yogpeeth that sells the same tumbler at Rs 1,000. Sources further disclosed that the department officials came across similar marketing moves by neighbouring tribal state of Chattisgarh which sells 18 such forest produce in the market. The tribals and women self help groups in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts are being trained in marketing and packaging of forest products. The forests of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are known for a range of products like honey, safed musli, ashwagandha and other medicinal herbs. Meanwhile, Minister for Finance and Planning Sudhir

Mungantiwar has constituted a committee to suggest measures to increase transparency and efficiency of the scholarships of various departments to the Students. Various departments of the government like School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Social Justice and Special Assistance, Tribal Development are currently offering various scholarships, freeships to students of various categories of various educational courses under various schemes. With a view to review all such schemes as well to examine feasibility of establishing certain criteria for eligibility of the students and schools, colleges and courses which benefit from all such schemes the committee has been constituted. This committee will be headed by Prin-

cipal Secretary (Financial Reforms). It may be recalled that Minister for Finance had tabled a White Paper on Financial position of the state in the Budget session of the legislature. The White Paper points out that the need to establish a Fees Determination Tribunal has been stressed with a view to bring more efficiency and transparency in fees determination. The committee has been entrusted with suggesting measures to determine criteria for students to be given freeships, scholarships as well as schools, colleges which will be eligible to implement these schemes. The committee will also look into bringing transparency in the procedure of expenditure of these funds thereby improving efficiency of these schemes.

He added that the Sena too aspires to get power on its own strength. Sources further disclosed that Shah in an equally blunt message to party leaders and cadres, reminded partymen that they should now realise that they are in power and come out of their opposition party mentality. He asserted that the BJP which has come to power in the state and at the centre is here to stay in power for a long period. He also reminded the party leaders that the party is not run on funds but on the strength of the party cadres. The BJP president stated that party cadres tirelessly work for principles and idelology and not for electoral

victory or defeats. Shah directed all the MLAs and ministers to set up party offices right up to taluka level. He asked the party cadres to inform the people about the 24 new public welfare schemes started by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government at the centre. He added that after the successful membership drive the party cadres now need to make the Mahasampark abhiyan of training and contacting newly registered party members. Shah stated that the party which has registered more than 11 crore members is not seeking power on the basis of its cadre strength but to create a vibrant and robust India. He added that the BJP has overcome all odds on the basis of cadres known for their clear thoughts, programmes and principles.

ven as the country awaits PM Narendra Modi's commitment before the general polls, to bring back black money stashed abroad, a few heavyweights involved allegedly in the Hawala racket await court proceedings. A Mumbaibased bullion king Prithviraj Kothari was named in the charge sheet submitted to the Supreme Court in 2014 by the ED. According to an ED official investigating the case, “ED has vital evidence against Prithviraj Kothari and Rajesh Jain. The case has not come up for hearing in nine months but on July 10 the case will be heard in the Supreme Court. Evidence related to the 2G scam money transferred from Chennai via Surat have also been found and further investigations are on.” The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in its investigations found a hawala racket that is supposed to be India's biggest. Afroz Fatta, being monitored by SC appointed SIT has been already arrested in a Rs.10,000 crore hawala racket.

Modus operandi according to ED:

The accused used to submit forged import documents of diamonds in international banks based in Surat and send money against it to

Prithviraj Kothari Dubai and Hong Kong. The investigation revealed that Dubai and Hong Kong based companies are controlled allegedly by Prithviraj Kothari, Rajesh Jain and Manshukh Sanghavi. Kothari controlled them through his nephew Raju Kothari who is based in Dubai. His India op-

erations were monitored by Rakesh Kothari (another nephew of Prithviraj Kothari) who is behind bars since nine months now. However Rajesh Jain controlled overseas company to operate the racket. In this case, Afroz Fatta and Madanlal Jain have already been arrested, who were looking after Indian front companies. However, following a a recent arrest of Manish Shah, proprietor (on paper) of a Dubai based company Mabrook Trading, the ED got vital evidence regarding international racket of Rajesh Jain and Prithviraj Kothari. In Mabrook Trading, during the month of December and January 2013-14, Rs.700 crore was transferred through Afroz Fatta. This money has gone to Switzerland which is allegedly black money. Meanwhile, Prithviraj Kothari had secured an exparte order in November 2014 wherein the Supreme Court had ordered no coercive should be taken action against him. The case has not come up for hearing in the past nine months. The case is now posted for hearing on Friday.

Here, I do not think anybody would like to go shopping in the night. Also, the hawkers cause enough nuisance in the day, why add to the problem in the night? And even if a few people go to shop, how are

they going to secure the area and how will they guarantee safety of citizens?” he questioned the point of motion that was passed on Tuesday. MNS leader at BMC, Sandeep Deshpande says that the major issue is the security. “Women's safety is a major point of concern here. Is the Mumbai police going to be involved in this plan? Because there has to be a strong provision for security if they go ahead with this plan,” Deshpande said. While party leaders are bringing up the issue of security, activists have a slightly

O

different view on the situation. Sushiben Shah, former Chairperson of Maharashtra State Commission for Women, says that this can be a win-win situation. She stressed on the fact that Mumbai police should be involved in securing the place. “If they can maintain security, this is a great initiative, especially if the market is set up in South Mumbai. There are ample employment opportunities. Also, many flea markets abroad have women vendors. This way, more women will be able to participate in welcoming an inter-

national concept,” she said. Activist from Bandra, Vidya Vaidya thinks that this can be a success if it is set in the right place. “This all depends on the location of the market. In commercial areas like Bandra-Kurla complex where streets are not used in the night, this could be possible. Otherwise during the day there is enough nuisance from the hawkers around residential areas. “The BMC rarely implements their policies, and therefore I would like these night markets to be as far away from residential areas as possible,” Vaidya said. In terms of women's safety, she feels that women themselves have to be responsible enough. “Women have all the right to go and shop whenever they want. Generally, they will be accompanied in markets like these, and I think even the police will be involved in this, so the safety of women might not be that much of an issue if the security is taken care of,” she concluded.

n order to unlock more space for development in the peripheral areas of the twin-city, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has mooted a proposal to give an additional Floor Space of Index (FSI) to Chene and Versova villages on the Ghodbunder Road. A resolution to this effect will be tabled before the special general body which will meet on Monday, July 13.

Formed in June 1985 as a B-class municipal council, the MBMC was elevated to Aclass in August 1996 and later awarded the status of a Dclass municipal corporation on February 28, 2002. The MBMC comprises of 19 revenue villages, out of which five including Uttan, Pali, Chowk, Tarodi and Dongri have MMRDA as their special planning authority. As per the Development Plan (DP) approved in May 1997, the MBMC provides an FSI of 1 to all other villages except Versova and Chena whose FSI has been capped at 0.5. A large number of reserved plots in the jurisdiction are yet to be acquired and developed by the MBMC. Owing to

government’s newly-enacted Land Acquisition Act, the owner is entitled to twice the value of the land as compensation, however since the MBMC cannot afford to spend such huge amounts towards procurement it has formulated a strategy to award a maximum FSI of 2 in the form of Transfer Development Right (TDR) to the owner surrendering a plot for an earmarked public amenity. As per the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) vast tracts of lands fall under the CRZ rules disallowing any type of construction activity. While a significant number of properties have been tagged as No Development (ND),

most of those which are free from any type of technical hurdles have already been developed. Anticipating a crash in rates of TDR owing to non-availability of open space, the town planning wing fears that the situation might eventually flood them with scores of purchase notices which is not a viable option for the MBMC. “Owing to 0.5 FSI, Versova and Chene are still awaiting development, the move of additional 0.5 FSI will help release the reserved plots and MBMC will be able develop the imposed amenities,” said an official. The MBMC is seeking changes in its DC rules under the relevant sections of the MRTP Act.

estled in Raghuvanshi Mills, Roti Kapda Makaan (RKM) is a quirky little store with a recently launched in-house café, an absolutely refreshing concept and a great addition to the café culture that’s really growing in the city. Along with selling funky stuff like home décor items, giftables and clothes, customers can now also choose from an array of appetising food on offer. It’s one of those places that you’d like to spend hours at in an ambience which is creatively inspiring from the moment you enter and gets your creative senses tingling. Every bit of space has been utilised beautifully giving you so much to see. A bright yellow wall on the right displays their products amid some very quirky mounted displays like an old box TV and an old suitcase. There’s also a clothes line, like one at a dhobi ghat with clothes hung up for sale on it. At the centre sits the café overlooking a very picturesque mango tree. The store spells fun and that’s how they want it to be. You’re welcome to sit and work here (there’s free WIFI) or just hang out with friends and family. I have to hand it to the owners, former chartered accountant Sneha Raisoni of Tappu Ki Dukaan fame and former branding and advertising professional, Henal Mehta for the brainwave that is RKM. They’ve found a great way to blend store and café and in the process promote and market their goods in-house wonderfully. Everything you see here is on sale and can be yours including what you eat out off and are served in. Presentation is the key here and RKM makes everything look so desirable that you want to have

and buy everything you set your eyes on whether it's the food or the products. Having said that let me take you through the food, it’s vegetarian with a mix of dishes right from Italian to Indian to Thai to Mediterranean. Every dish here is served in a unique manner and that really is their USP. Take for example the Edible spoons (Rs.220) in the starters, which is six edible spoons, two each topped with herbed cream cheese, pesto hummus and harissa hummus. There’s also the baked buns (Rs.199), four buns in total - two vada pav buns and two sundried tomato, jalapeno, corn and cheese buns. My personal favourite being the vada pav buns. Literally, two cute buns stuffed with vada filling and baked to perfection giving you a mildly flavoured, healthy and tasty starter. There’s also the stuffed cones (Rs.199) which is four crispy cones, two stuffed with cholle and two with pav bhaji filling. There’s also the Pani Puri shots (Rs.175), six test tubes filled with paani puri paani with puris sitting on top. Pop the puri into your mouth and gulp it down with the paani. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to try it all out? In mains, there’s the Lebanese Salad (Rs.270) served in a jar, much like many of their dishes. T h e

CBI probe in scam t is quite a matter of concern that Iforced the governor of a state cannot be out of office thanks to the constitutional immunity he has. The governor of Madhya Pradesh who is said to be involved in the Vyapam scam has remained in office even though an FIR has been lodged against him. Most of the persons who have been charged along with him are in jail. In the FIR he figures as accused number 10. It becomes obvious that either he is deeply involved in the Vyapam or others are using him as a shield. The Supreme Court itself asked yesterday why he is not charged with any offence. The Madhya Pradesh government is quite soft on him. The chief minister has no complaint against him. At all levels of power, the climate was suitable for the emergence of the scam. It is being said that it is bigger than the 2G scam. In that scam, money was all that was involved: there was no murder. In the Vyapam scam, murder is an important part in addition to money. It looks like a scam which is run by the underworld. Perhaps this is the first big scam of its kind in the country. Hopefully the CBI will probe all aspects of the scam. It has to probe many top officials, businessmen, rich aspirants and the governor of Madhya Pradesh. Finally, it may also have to probe chief minister Shivraj Singh Yadav.

ISCRIMINATION in regard to caste in India has been aptly negated in the constitution of the country, formulated and accepted upon becoming independent. But, caste consciousness lingered on and manifested itself with varying degrees of vehemence as the country traversed along its political odyssey in the ensuing decades post-independence. The social stigma and criterions and its associated social evils associated with the identification of an individual on the basis of one’s caste was unhesitatingly censured and criticized by leaders of the Indian freedom movement, and was granted unqualified approval by enlightened and thoughtful section of the country’s citizenry; as its aftermath, this wave percolated down across social stratifications, and consequently emphasized the negative attributes associated with it, if not insisting an outright rejection of the social paradigm determined by caste. The country achieved freedom, with an apparent resolve, encouraged by the then political leadership, that judging a person through the prism of caste, by default, was to be a thing of the past; but, a centuries old practice lingered on, metaphorically speaking, beneath the socio-political skin of the Indian polity, and after the first generation of political leadership left the political scene, condemnably made its way, gradually but surely, yet again into the polity, as an instrument to be used for garnering votes, primarily among the significantly backward section of the electorate, at times of elections, by various political parties. For more than the past two decades, the country has witnessed the parallel manifestation of two rather antipodal trends in its political culture. After decades of socio-economic stagnation, the government in India began liberalizing the economy from the shackles of controls, with which it had increasingly hemmed it down, for more than four decades, after independence. The phased pattern of liberalizations have brought about significant net national gains as regards economic growth and raised the living standards of the people, on average. Most political parties now appreciate the need for growth and constructive economic reforms for an overall benefit of the country. Nevertheless, along with it a rather regressive social dynamic has spouted; it is the increasing use of caste identities by political parties for gaining votes. This trend is more palpable in rural areas than in urban areas.

identities became greatly more rigid. Mobility was thwarted; one’s birth rather than one’s work became the principal if not the sole determinant of one’s class. Through the passage of centuries, domination, exploitation, and subjugation of the lower castes by the upper castes became an entrenched attribute by itself, notwithstanding the presence of certain honourable exceptions. From this grew severe social restrictions and also a particular antipathy and disinclination for a constructive dialogue and symbiosis with other religions, which had established their presence in India with the passage of time.

British rule in India During British rule in India, reform movements sprouted up from the beginning of the eighteenth century. Raja Rammohan Roy was the first who articulated the need for a reform of Hinduism to be able to lift it up from the depths of superstition and backwardness it had fallen into. From the mid-eighteenth century stretching into the nineteenth century, a galaxy of outstanding individuals made a most positive and spectacular impact into the socio-political fabric of the country: Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Dayanand Saraswati, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo are foremost among those who worked and contributed towards a reform and enlightenment of the Indian society and transported the message of its culture and philosophy to the outside world. Unacceptable traits surrounding caste were administered a tangible corrective. With the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi into the Indian scene, and through his leadership of the unified Congress Party leading the country to independence, the condemnation of discrimination along caste and religious backgrounds were incorporated as akin to an article of faith; the pages of the constitution of independent India flatly proscribes discrimination on and exploitation of such issues. On the morrow of independence, public use of caste was relegated to the backburner and resolved to be rooted out with administrative actions, widespread education, and social awareness. Literacy has reached a far greater proportion of the population than ever before, although a fully educated population is still an unfulfilled goal. But, caste has come back to haunt the body politic of the country. It has assumed an abominable form of electoral determinant in certain parts of the country. It is one of the major reasons instigating political and social violence in the country. While the country traverses on in its goals of greater economic prosperity and implementation of needed welfare schemes, it is a fervent hope that enlightened political leaders and the populace would gradually compel foreclosing of the use of caste; thwarting proclivities towards communal polarisation is bound to be a subsequent, if not an associated, act.

Janata Party (BJP) for exploiting the caste factor to win elections. Apparently, the JD(U)-RJD combine hopes to bank upon the strength of certain caste identities to be able to secure a victory over the BJP in the Bihar elections. The country seems keen, and appropriately so, to break the remaining strings of backwardness, ignorance, and superstition for an unhindered cherished voyage towards well being and prosperity of its citizenry. But, within that wheel of unalloyed progress, several spikes seem to be perennially inserted, notably for about the preceding two-and-ahalf decades. Foremost among them is the caste factor. Political parties and leaders accuse each other of espousing caste consciousness and attempting to prolong divisions among the populace, but are often eager to use it as a determinant to be able to garner the maximum number of votes in order to win a particular election. A rather ironical situation, in a way, appears to have

manifested in the country. Despite having a keen consciousness of the regressive outcome of toying with the caste factor and using it as a determinant to form identities, individually or collectively, caste is often espoused for a swelling of the ranks of a political party’s or a political alliance’s myrmidons; explicitly or implicitly. It leads to a vortex-like situation from which extrication becomes difficult. The retrograde effects of deploying the caste factor into the political process are known. But, the capacity or the will to work for a clean break from the whirlpool of caste dynamics is often found wanting. The institution of caste in India has been in vogue for over a millennia. Madhya Pradesh CM under pressure CLOSE on the heels of the Supreme Court deciding to hear the petitions relating to the Vyapam scam, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced belatedly for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. While the State government has maintained that 25 people related to the scam have died, the Opposition alleged that the total number of such deaths had reached 48. The Congress, however, dubbed Chouhan’s decision as a political gimmick and did not trust the CBI alone to conduct a fair probe unless it is monitored by the Supreme Court. The critics feel that it is the MP government’s way of hoodwinking the people. The Finance Minister said there should be an independent probe. All is well as of now and if better council prevail if the CBI inquiry is free and fair. With two unnatural deaths in successive days — a journalist on Saturday and a doctor on Sunday — the number of whistle-blowers, accused and witnesses, who are dying raise reasonable doubts about a coverup. The official attempt to slot these deaths as accidents, suicides and health problems has not found traction with the families. From this we understand that the welfare of the minor child is more important than the rights of an uninvolved father, observes Supreme Court. Citing various civil and common law precedents across the globe, a two-judge bench made the point clear. The court's verdict came on the plea of a single unwed Christian mother who wanted to make her child nominee for all purposes. The complaint has been filed by David Fernandes (36) husband of the victim Soniya (28), who are residents of Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar (West). “The woman received a call from one Mahesh in June, who claimed to be from Kotak Mahindra Bank, and spoke about loans being offered at extremely low interest rates. cheques on the pretext of some administrative procedure, which she duly did. The accused then wrote ‘cancelled’ on the cheques in the standard diagonal fashion in front of the woman using the special pen. However, on June 13, the accused erased the ‘cancelled’ sign by holding a lighter at a certain distance under the cheques that caused the written matter to completely disappear and then rewrote the cheques with amounts of Rs.35,000 and Rs.45,000 on two of the 'cancelled chques'. They encashed it the same day even as the victims realized the fraud and reported it to the police. Police arrested Kamlesh Gautam Tambe (30), Shrimant Gorakh Bhosale (34), Manoj Mishra (30) from Chembur, Badlapur and Sion areas on Monday and Tuesday. “The pen was procured from Delhi. Tambe played a greater role in the scam since he was incharge of making the calls, speaking to victims, collecting the blank cheques, encashing them and then withdrawing the money to be distributed amongst the other accused,” DCP Patil added.

"The Attorney General (AG) on instruction states that MP govt has no objection whatsoever for transferring the investigation of criminal cases relating to Vyapam scam to the CBI and the cases related to deaths of those allegedly connected with the scam for free and fair probe. "We appreciate the stand of the AG. In view of the above we transfer investigation of all criminal cases relating to Vyapam scam and death of people allegedly related to it, to CBI," the bench, also comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy, said. The court was hearing a clutch of petitions filed by Congress leader Digvijay Singh, whistle blowers in the scam Ashish Kumar Chaturvedi and Prashant Pandey, besides AAP leader Kumar Vishwas and a group of lawyers.

Death of witness Even as the apex court ordered a CBI probe, reports came in from Bhopal of a special court having been informed about the death of yet another witness in the scam. The Special Task Force of MP police, which hitherto investigated the scam, told the court that Sanjay Singh Yadav, aged around 35, died from illness at a private hospital in Bhopal on February 8. According to his family, he was suffering from Hepatitis-B. Congress had claimed yesterday that 49 people connected to the scam had lost their lives so far.

The girl met a woman in the train and told her that she wanted to go to Diva where her cousin brother stayed. The woman dropped her at Diva and from there her cousin took her to their paternal uncle’s home in Chembur. Our officers Mullmvar, Pol, Sapre, Bhosale, Pujari, Salunkhe and Swati Shinde cracked this case,” informed Mengde. Mengde concluded saying that, “The girl told us that her mother treated her like a burden and hence she sent her out of the house to her uncle's home.”

Something’S brewing! The craft beer trend has been growing in India, and there are now several places (and even a few microbreweries) around the city where you can sip on some refreshing options. The 48hrs Team tells you about the beer and where you can get it in Mumbai

QUeNCH YoUR tHiRst While The Irish House, San-Qi, British Brewing Company, blueFROG and Copa are some of the pubs that offer craft beers, the list goes on and on! We’re telling you where to get craft beer in the city and giving you a glance at what each place has to offer.

I

t’s been raining beer in Mumbai; and how! The latest trend doing the rounds is craft beer! Playing catchup with celebrated beer hubs such as Bangalore, New Delhi and Pune, the city may be the last metropolis in India to enter the craft brewing sphere, but no one’s worried about that. The trend of ordering a craft beer at a local pub is on the rise, and here to stay! Pankil Shah, owner of Woodside Inn and Woodside All Day Bar & Eatery, tells us, “Despite being the last metropolitan city to introduce locally brewed craft beer, people seem to have taken to guzzling them down.

They appreciate the variety in the style of beer that craft breweries offer them, especially considering most of the mainstream breweries only brew one type of beer — lager. However, people seem to be taking to newer beer styles such as wheat beer, stout, porter and even IPA (India Pale Ale), which, ironically, was actually made for India by the British.”

what is craft beer? The term craft beer is generally reserved for beer that has been brewed by a small brewery (a microbrewery, if you will) in a non-

mechanised process and one that’s served locally, although that definition has been stretched quite a bit since craft beer has evolved. And, while every beer is distinctive — with its own flavour and body — what makes craft beer different is that it is excitingly fresh. It is often said that craft beer is born out of pure passion as it uses only grain, hops, yeast and water and is free from additives and artificial products. Also, craft beer is generally characterised by experimentation, with flavours and smells that you won’t normally get from a conventional bottled variety.

the Barking deer, Lower Parel Flying Pig Belgian Wit A light, tangy beer with fresh orange peel, coriander and cumin seeds. Bombay Blonde Ale A crisp beer with German and Czech noble hops that balance the bitterness. Barking Deer India Pale Ale This ale packs a bitter punch and has a pleasant, citrusy aroma. Prices `275 onwards

How it’s made If local breweries can make it, brewing craft beer must be simple, right? Wrong! The process is actually pretty complex. Shailendra Bist, co-owner at Independence Brewing Company, explains the method. n Grain Milling: Malt is milled to expose the sugary liquid (wort) for extraction. This milled malt is called grist. n Mashing and lautering: The grist is then mixed with warm water so that the enzymes present in it are converted into starch sugars. For this, the temperature schedule has to be carefully controlled because it is a delicate process. In lautering, sweet wort is then extracted from the mash. n Boiling: Wort is boiled and hops (rare and expensive flowers) are added into it during this process. The bitterness and flavour obtained from the hops is determined by the quantity of hops and the duration for which it is left in the

boiling beer. Boiling sterilizes the beer while controlling its flavour and maintaining clarity. n Filtering/cooling: The remains of hops and coagulated protein material are removed from the boiled wort. It is then cooled to a temperature suitable for yeast growth. n Fermentation: Yeast is added to the wort along with flavour compounds to ferment its sugars into alcohol. The taste of the final concoction is based on the strain of yeast, temperature and on the brewing time. n Conditioning and serving: The fermented beer is then filtered to remove excess yeast and left to be conditioned. It is at this time that the flavour in the beer increases as it matures. After this, it is then carbonated with CO2 and finally, the craft beer is ready to be served.

think we can all agree that your relationship with your hairdresser is a love-hate one. In all my years of experimenting with salons across the city, I was still searching for one that truly understood what my hair needed. That is, until I visited Rikoshé Salon. Situated in the busy suburbs of Andheri, Rikoshé Salon is a quaint, swanky salon, curated by hair stylist, Rikhil Asrani — who is quite the charmer! The salon is located in a corner of one of the buildings on New Link Road in Andheri. Make sure you don’t miss it, since it’s squished between an apparel store and the back entrance of a building. As you walk into the salon, you will see that while it’s not fancy, it’s comfortable. Colours bounce off the walls, sitting pretty in the form of some brilliant artwork or the other. I took a quick tour of the two floors of the salon, and after a nice chat with

Rikhil, made my way to the ground floor, which was used to wash and steam hair. Getting your hair washed is always a pleasant experience — mainly because we all love the luxury of having it done by someone; other than ourselves. Once that was done, I made my way back to the first floor, where Rikhil and I had an engrossing chat about what styles suit my face. The reason it’s usually so hard for me to find a good hairdresser, is because I have wanted to move away from my regular haircut for a while now, and none of the hairdressers that I have been to have agreed with what I have had in mind. Things at Rikoshé were a bit different. I professed my desire to go shorter by getting a lob (a longer variation of the short bob). With small changes and after a few variations, Rikhil suggested we go for it (finally!). Once it was done, I was glad to see what

a brilliant job he had done. For all those who haven’t quite wrapped their heads around what the word Rikoshé means, it has been inspired by the English word, ricochet. The salon is also a training academy for hairstylists who have been trained under Rikhil’s expert guidance. To sum up my experience, I’d say that it was a refreshing change from run-offthe-mill commercial salons. You can rest assured, that your opinions about your own hair are not going to be dismissed by an all-knowing hair stylist, and it’s worth every penny you spend. I can definitely see myself going back in the near future! Where Rikoshé Salon and Academy, Shop 4, 5, 6 and 7, Twinkle Arcade, Next to Fusion Clothes, Andheri (w) contact 9820968578

Woodland advance cell Block Technology T-shirT

T

he Woodland Celliant t-shirt promises advanced cell block technology that makes t-shirt last more or less forever, has technology, which makes it comfortable and is said to enhance oxygen levels, recycle body heat into infrared energy and increase circulation. Oh, and it regulates body temperature too. Choc-o-bloc full of features, the t-shirt itself didn’t blow me away. I received a gorgeous colour, but it didn’t look like it would prevent sweat or keep me healthy. I still decided to give it a try, wearing it at least once a week. Whether it’s a psychological thing or because of its thermo-reactive minerals, it became a favourite. I did feel better when I

was wearing it, but I don’t know if it enhanced circulation or oxygen. What it did do, was regulate body temperature. Much like the attire most sporting brands are now introducing, the t-shirt passed the test outdoors as well as at the gym. It’s highly priced, but it’s extremely comfortable, more so than a lot of sweat-free, ‘comfort fit’ t-shirts. It didn’t fade in the wash, but I’d pin that down to good fabric. Does it last a lifetime? I’ll have to get back to you about that. Would I buy it again? Maybe not, but only because I don’t usually spend (`2,795) on a t-shirt. If you do, it’s comfortable, keeps you feeling great and is very well-fitting, so there’s no real downsides to picking one up!

better with

beer! Mumbai seems to be revelling in beer culture, and we’re sure our story on page 13/14 has gotten you even more hooked to this idea! Adding to beer haunts around the city is The Beer Café. Katha Nauriyal made her way to its Mahim outlet to see what they have on offer

T

he minute we walked into The Beer Café, we knew we were in for a treat. We were greeted by a beer metre, which flashes the number of beer varieties they have on offer; there were thirty six when we visited. A quintessential beer café is the best way to describe The Beer Café. With its black and yellow décor and wooden furniture, it offers the affable ambiance that usually is a hit amongst beer lovers. With a clichéd blend of beer and sports at its base, The Beer Café hangs a big television screen for match screenings. It has a casual bar area, with large refrigerators like the ones at supermarkets, displaying an array of beers. Interestingly, resonating the café’s easy-going mood, the food and beverage menu was easy to read through. It even suggested what starters you can pair with your beer. However, their vegetarian section does need a little more brushing up. We began our feast with tasting portions of beer and beer cocktails. A variety of both dark and light, beginning with Doppelganger (`275), which despite being a dark wheat beer, brings in a surprisingly sweet tinge. Beer Mule (`325) on the other hand, is a sweet beer cocktail with hints of cucumber in it, that are quite refreshing. However, the Beerijito (`295) can be a disappointment for

people like me, who love both, beer and mojitos. Even though it was quite lemony, it contained very less sugar and hardly had any flavour. And, for those with a penchant for dark wheat beer, I recommend the Erdinger Mug (`495). Next up was a round of beer bites. The Kolhiwada Fried Chicken (`325) comprised of a well-tendered chicken served with Oriental sauce, making it a must-try! The Butter Garlic Prawns (`395) were quite appetising, crispy and not too spicy; suitable for most palettes. We were then served their thin crust pizzas. Carnivorous Treat (`475), a variety of chicken chunks served in basil and jalapeños, was a flavoursome, meaty pizza, and an absolute treat for chicken lovers! For vegetarians, their Garden Fresh Pizza (`345) is topped with fresh basil and vegetables and tasted just as good. We gorged on these treats with a pint of Asahi beer (`495) and a Blue Flip beer cocktail (`285). For those like me, who enjoy a refreshing, cool flavour, the latter will live up to your expectations! The main course took some time to arrive, but don’t they say that good things take time? We dug into a Veg Biryani (`295), which, to my surprise, was not a disappointment for my non-vegetarian palette. Served with crispy papad and raita, its wedges of beans,

Go biryan T

peas, and mint leaves made the freshness of the biryani palpable. But, what we loved most were the Beer Battered Fish & Chips (`395). Served with tartar sauce, this melt-inthe-mouth recipe is certainly worth every penny! It was cooked exceptionally well and was full of flavours. We ended our meal on a sweet note, with Blueberry Cheesecake (`175), which was light and toothsome, layered with plain cream cheese and blueberry jam. In a nutshell, The Beer Café is a great place for beer lovers to lounge around with a spread of beer variations and delicious food options. While the fact that they don’t brew their own beer could be a little disappointing, the café definitely deserves a visit. A brand that recently re-invented itself, Go Biryan offers a heady mix of biryanis that smelled so delicious, we couldn’t wait to try them the minute they reached us. Here’s how the dishes fared once the 48Hrs Team began to dig in

hey took Andheri by storm last year as Le Berian, and now they’ve got a new name and a new location with a menu that features new preparations as well as their old favourites. Go Biryan is now in Bandra, and offers a varied selection of biryani that you can order for a delicious lunch (pick the queen size), a meal for two (the king size) or even for a party (they also sell by the kilo). What did we think of the food? Take a look:

The boxes

The vegetarian options The one problem that we had with their vegetarian biryani options is that they tasted almost like their non-vegetarian preparations. This won’t be a problem for vegetarians, but for non-vegetarians looking for a few extra options, this will fall flat. That said, the Paneer Makhani Biryani (`220) was delicious. The Afghani Biryani (`190) however, was a little too salty, with excessive doses of spice. If it was to make up for the lack of meat, it failed us there!

The Mega Rolls and loaded Naan Pockets

Each biryani comes in either a king size or a queen size box— both of which offer good quantity. If you don’t have a huge appetite, the queen size will leave you full to the brim. The king size is perfect for two. The packaging is great — sturdy and easy to eat from.

While we were very impressed with the biryanis, the rolls failed to do anything for us. They were oily, didn’t taste good and neither the wrapping nor the filling was prepared well. The Paneer Makhani Pocket (`200) fared better than he Bhuna Chicken Roll (`200), especially since the paneer was succulent. However, we wouldn’t order either one again.

The non-vegetarian biryani Most of the non-vegetarian variants are well-cooked, practical and easy to dig in to, especially because of the smaller pieces of meat, which made it easy to eat on the go. The Chicken Tikka Biryani (`230) was a team favourite, although some of us found it a bit salty. The meat was juicy, tender and well-prepared. The Chicken Afghani Tikka Biryani (`240) was rather disappointing — the caramelised onions made it a little too sweet. However, once we got used to the slight sweetness, it was delicious enough to gobble up. The

>> The Blueberry Cheesecake at Beer Café is not heavy

Bohri-style Lamb Biryani (`280) was one of our favourites. Soft, succulent pieces of lamb combined with very flavourful rice... this would be our first order if we had to order again. The Butter Chicken Biryani (`250) took one of us closer home, so even though we’ve tasted better, it had the right balance of sweetness, and the flavour meets the mark. A tip to remember though is to mix the rice well so that you don’t get clumps of masala from the bottom.

The bottom line Would we order the biryani? Definitely! It’s delicious, easy on the stomach and you can pick flavours that suit you best. The rest of the menu unfortunately, did not impress us as much. Contact 26048844/ 69948844

food with

Benefits

Food with Benefits recently wrapped up its 3rd edition! Yamini Walia spoke to chef Pooja Dhingra, who participated in the event, as well as Nachiket Shetye & Mangal Dalal, founders of Cellar Door Hospitality, to find out more

A

fter the success of its first two editions, Food with Benefits successfully concluded its 3rd edition and this time, it was even bigger and better! The culinary event, which raised funds for Teach for India, consisted of a series of unique dining

experiences, bringing the city’s finest chefs including Pooja Dhingra, Nachiket Shetye, Viraf Patel, Gresham Fernandes, Alex Sanchez, Irfan Pabaney and Jaideep Mukherjee together. We spoke to Pooja, Nachiket and Mangal, before we went, to find out more.

nachiket Shetye & Mangal Dalal n This is the 3rd edition of Food with Benefits. Tell

us how you decided to start the event! We conduct multiple food-based events — Restaurant Week (our flagship event), Chef’s Table Week and Cellar Door Kitchen, which organises pop-up restaurants with Indian and international chefs. Food with Benefits was conceptualised as our way to give back to the industry; where we raise as much money as possible for various charities and have multiple chefs who come together and build camaraderie, while contributing to a good cause.

>> Pooja Dhingra saw Food with Banefits as a big learning opportunity

n What kind of response did you receive for the

previous editions? We always receive a great response, with mostly sold out events. The concept this year is unique and is restricted to 12 covers per night. n Are you targeting any specific customer base?

We are not targeting any particular customer base, because we want the event to be accessible to everyone who wants to come and experience good food that is created by talented chefs from the city as well as help generate money for charity.

n Tell us how the event is organised.

This year’s event was different from what we have done in the past. Instead of organising one dinner, we spread the event over five evenings. Each of the four evenings featured a multiple course dinner, cooked by an individual chef, for 12 covers. This was followed by a gala dinner on Sunday evening, with multiple chefs serving one course each.

n What are your future plans?

The core features are to showcase the skills of multiple restaurants under one roof, encouraging chefs across the city to work together for a cause. Diners will be seated on community tables to share a unique culinary experience. We plan to organise two more events like this in this financial year.

>> Nachiket and Mangal founded Food with Benefits in order to raise money for various charities

Pooja Dhingra n How do you feel about being associated with five different chefs for

Food with Benefits? Were you excited or nervous? It’s extremely exciting to host and work with five of the most talented chefs that I know. I see things like this as a great learning experience! n What made you decide to associate with Food with Benefits?

Food with Benefits is an excellent programme, not only because it brings the best chefs of the city together, but also because it raises awareness and money for the charities that are supported by each chef. n What were you looking forward to most at the event?

Seeing the chefs in action! And meeting, interacting with, and welcoming people into my culinary studio. n Did you plan anything differently?

We had a lot of great food and very interesting dessert ideas lined up. Collaborating with different people ensures that you leave your comfort zone, which only leads to great things. n What are your future plans for the popular Le15 Patisserie? Is there

anything new that your customers can look forward to? We’ve just opened our 4th store in Mumbai, and we’re working on the 5th. My first book just won second place for pastry at the World Gourmand Cookbook Awards and I’m busy working on the second one. © Courier Publications Private Limited. All rights reserved. Sector turning attractive and focus on risk mitigants will lower cost of funding, says CRISIL

lytical Officer, CRISIL Ratings: “Grid parity, along with the recently restored fiscal benefits, make wind power projects profitable, sustainable, and scalable. As a result, CRISIL expects wind-power capacity to nearly double from current By A Business Reporter levels -- growing at 4,000 mw per annum -- in the next five years. That ind-power capacity in translates into an investment poIndia has grown an impres- tential of Rs.1 lakh crore.” In the last five years, nearly 60% of sive five-fold in the last 10 years, touching 23,000 megawatt the capacity added was by private (mw) in March 2015. Growth is developers. The top ten developers, being propelled by tariffs - at Rs 4- with a 20 per cent share of capacity, 5.5 per unit currently - inching to- have invested about Rs 12,000 crore wards grid parity. CRISIL expects as equity. The sector’s rising attracthis trend to continue, supported by tiveness has also been accompanied favourable government policy to- by a change in the lending approach from sponsor support seen earlier to wards renewable energy. Says Pawan Agrawal, Chief Ana- one based on project cash flows.

W

Given the milieu, CRISIL has finetuned its criteria for rating windpower projects by evaluating risks and mitigants. Wind-power projects face unique risks, such as wind variability -- both across years and seasonally within a year – that impacts generation; delays in receivables, or the counter-party payment risk. Extensive simulation using CRISIL’s proprietary models indicate that lenders can sufficiently address risks in a wind-power project by focusing on two key mitigants: First is, maintaining adequate debt-servicecoverage-ratio (DSCR), computed using a base case power generation at P90 plant load factor. Second is by creating a liquidity buffer linked to counter-party payment profile and seasonality. Such a liquidity buffer

can be provided in various forms. Then there are other mitigants for added comfort, such as portfolio diversification and debt sculpting. The cost and efficacy of each mitigant, however, differs. CRISIL’s criteria framework is designed to evaluate the efficacy of each mitigant in addressing the two risks. Says Somsekhar Vemuri, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings: “A sharper focus on risk mitigants is a credit positive for the wind power sector, and can help developers raise funds at lower costs. It can be complemented by innovations such as partially guaranteed debt that will enable the wind sector to tap the capital markets. This, in turn, will reduce funding costs and improve competitiveness.”

India Will Have To Rely On Domestic Gas And Imported LNG Till 2020 Energy pipeline from Central Asia to India unlikely to be completed before FY20, as the proposed TAPI pipeline's commissioning faces multiple challenges which are unlikely to be addressed quickly and will make it a long gestation project By A Business Reporter

I

ndia will not receive gas for the next four to five years from energy-rich Central Asia through the proposed USD10bn Turkmenistan– Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) pipeline, believes India Ratings and Research. The TAPI pipeline is unlikely to be commissioned by the proposed time-line of FY18, and India will continue to rely on domestic gas and imported LNG. The agency sees four key issues associ-

ated with the successful commissioning of the pipeline a) the seller’s willingness to sell gas at a price feasible for the ultimate buyer b) volume off-take assurance by end-consumers c) funding of the pipeline and d) geopolitical risks associated with the construction and operation of the 1,735km long pipeline. The willingness of Turkmenistan state concern to price its gas in a manner which would ensure its cost competitiveness in countries where the gas is finally sold is essential for the project to take off. Turk-

Industrial Production Likely To Decline Amidst Mixed Sentiments By A Business Reporter

T

23

he ZyFin Research, Business Cycle Indicator (BCI), a lead indicator to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) trend, has registered a score of 8.4 in July as against 9.5 in June. This is the third consecutive month when there was a decline in the BCI, raising fears of a renewed slowdown. However it is encouraging to note that compared to the previous year, the BCI is still signaling a strong recovery. The BCI was at 6.6 in July 2014. So while the domestic business cycle has come a long way after it bottomed out last year, the travel to its next peak has been a bumpy ride. The current BCI trend indicates towards a weakening in IIP levels in for May 2015. The recent declining trend reinforces the belief that the

Indian Government needs to enhance its multitasking abilities to better focus on short term growth projections while continuing to fix long term growth instruments like infrastructure, foreign relations and bureaucracy. Nevertheless lower borrowing costs in the midst of easing inflationary pressures have done much to boost consumer sentiments. Also, significantly higher forex reserves play guard against adverse global geo-political tensions. The Index dipped in July, primarily due to continued weak exports especially that of agricultural commodities. Also, a decline in production of non-ferrous metals compared to previous data point contributed to downtrend. However, when compared to the situation one year ago, there has been substantial recovery across various economic parameters.

menistan is a net exporter of natural gas and its economy depends on such exports and hence may keep prices high. Additionally, the extractability of the proven reserves of 16 trillion cubic meters of gas from the South Yolotan-Osman field from where the gas would be supplied could pose a challenge. This could limit the quantum of gas available for transportation from the pipeline. Many user industries would find the gas unviable for their operations and may refrain from entering into long-term purchase agreements if the landed

price of gas in India from the pipeline were to be high at USD10/mmbtu-USD12/mmbtu. Additionally, operations of gasbased power plants and fertiliser plants using gas from TAPI (2x domestic gas price) would lead to high power tariffs and higher subsidy, respectively, which the government might not prefer. Transit fee payable to each nation from where the pipeline passes and funding tie-ups for the project could hinder the prospects given the geo-political risks and the lack of off-take agreements.

Daughter of actor Randhir Kapoor and Babita, Karishma gave some memorable performances in films like "Anari", "Raja Babu", "Coolie No 1", "Saajan Chale Sasural", and "Jeet", but bagged laurels for her acting in "Raja Hindustani", "Biwi No. 1" and "Dil to Pagal Hai". Her critically acclaimed films include "Fiza" and Shaym Benegal's "Zubeidaa". "Right now she is very happy in her space. I doubt if she is ready for that (films) or not. National award-winning actress Karishma married Delhi-based industrialist Sunjay Kapur in 2003 and have two children - Samaira and Kiaan Raj. "She always advices me and been an inspiration not for me but for other women as well. She is looking best even after having two children. I will always aspire to be like her," Kareena said. J

By Chaitanya Padukone

ust as in Hollywood, two sequels have been made for the sensational dance-centric ‘Step Up’ movie, ace director-choreographer Remo D’Souza too has started work on the script of the desi ‘ABCD 3’. Not surprising, as his movie ‘ABCD-2’ has just crossed the coveted Rs.102 crore collections mark in its third week at the box-office. One can expect the lead star actors Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Dhawan of this latest runaway hit to literally dance their way to their bank. Gushes Shraddha , “It's really overwhelming for our entire team, that everybody seems to be 'fidaa' over our dancing. My dad (eminent actor Shakti Kapoor) and mom (Shivangi) shed tears of joy when they heard the ‘khush khabri’. Because this movie proved that apart from good acting I also have the calibre of a classy dancer.” Meanwhile, Remo seemed euphoric that finally a hardcore dance-movie has been well appreciated by repeat audiences. “Way back in the yesteryear ‘golden era’ there were dance-based hit movies like Vijay Anand’s ‘Guide’, Bhagwan Dada’s ‘Albela’, and V Shantaram’s ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baje’. But when movies in the recent past like ‘Aaja Nachle’ starring Madhuri Dixit-Nene had not fared well, it was felt that it is essential to connect with today’s fast-paced westernized youth,” he shrugs.

RINGSIDE VIEW

A

Deepa Gahlot

sif Kapadia’s documentary on Amy Winehouse, titled Amy tells a voyeuristic story of the young singer’s rise, fall and premature death. Using existing footage— with the ease of shooting on various gizmos these days, there is plenty of audiovisual material— Kapadia creates a not-too-flattering portrait of a weak woman with something like a death wish. The people interviewed, put a part of the blame on her greedy father and ex-husband, but also on the vulture-like paparazzi that followed her around, waiting for her to slip up— and she gave them a lot of scoops, both about her achievements and her mental unraveling. There have been many cases in the West, of celebrities dying early due to substance abuse— a tendency analysed and dismissed as the price of fame. In India too, some celebs have died young-– mostly suicide following heartbreak— but there has been hardly any public messup and tragic end quite like that of Amy Winehouse. Maybe, film stars here are buffered by family, treated with some deference by the paparazzi and almost worshipped by fans. In the West there’s no holds barred. No matter how big and powerful the star, there is little or no respect for their privacy. The craziness

displayed by stars like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan and the like is constant tabloid fodder. In Bollywood, maybe the competition is not so cut-throat because there are fewer stars. If there is depression and suicide among those who do not make it, the media is callous enough not to

care. The recent case of the TV actress who slashed her throat because she could get no work was soon forgotten. Nobody will make a documentary on her, strugglers just don’t count for much. Still, Deepika Padukone went public with her battles with depression. And stories of alcoholism, substance abuse, suicide attempts make the rounds of the grapevine, but not much reaches the media. If it does, then the media decides it’s better to maintain a relationship with a star than to wreck it for a sordid scoop. The days of the care-a-damn gossip mags are over, today it’s all about kow-towing to stars. The burnout rate is higher in the TV industry, but somehow the major stars find a way to cope— even if it’s making money attending events in borrowed designer togs. Nobody follows up on what happens to the not-so-famous ones. Showbiz can often take away a lot more than it gives, but still, not many can resist its siren call.

No plans of directing a movie: Juhi Chaturvedi

F

rom the quirky tale of a sperm donor in "Vicky Donor" to the realistic, modern take on the daughter-father relationship in "Piku", Juhi Chaturvedi's writing has been the backbone of these hit films. With her slice-of-life characters, she has been an able support to filmmaker Shoojit Sircar but the writer, herself, has no intentions to don the director's hat. "If everybody becomes a director, who will write? You need writers. I will always remain a writer. Let everybody else make films, I will just write," Juhi told PTI on the sidelines of the recently concluded 6th

Jagran Film Festival here. She made her debut as a scriptwriter in Shoojit's sleeper hit "Vicky Donor" in 2012, which starred debutant Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam and Annu Kapoor. Juhi believes good writers were there earlier too but they are in the spotlight today because the story has become a focal point for the makers and audience. "There have been wonderful writers even in the past. It is not that the writers have suddenly become better, but writing has become everybody's focal point, which probably wasn't happening earlier.

"Thank you to each and every one of you for your wishes. Means a lot," Shahid tweeted. The actor will host a wedding reception in Mumbai on July 12 and the event is expected to have the presence of who's who of Bollywood. Apart from his film assignments, the actor will be seen as a judge on the celebrity dance reality show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 8'.

Manoj Bajpayee is fit as ever

ctor Manoj Bajpayee may not have hopped on the flaunt-yoursix-pack bandwagon, but he is easily one of the fittest actors in B-Town. Believing in leading a healthy life, Manoj has always given health a priority. Be it outdoor shoots or dayto-day routines at home, Manoj makes sure to exercise daily and eat healthy nutritious food all day long. Not many would be aware but Manoj is such a health freak that some days he even personally cooks nutritious food for his family to keep

them healthy. He has also started yoga with his wife Neha in order to get mental peace and physical balance. Talking about his fitness funda, Manoj Bajpayee says, “I believe in leading a healthy life. For me fitness doesn’t mean to have abs or muscular look but it’s more of exercising daily and eating the right food. I am not someone who might stay in gym for hours but I certainly believe that one should not ignore his or her health, being an actor it is important that we pay close attention to our health.”

Muguruza reaches Wimbledon final ousting Radwanska, ends 19-year Spanish wait

L

ondon: Garbine Muguruza became the first Spanish woman in 19 years to reach the Wimbledon final on Thursday with a rollercoaster 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska. Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario was the last Spanish woman to make the final at the All England Club while Conchita Martinez was the last champion in 1994. Muguruza had to endure some nervy moments before she secured her maiden Grand Slam final spot, seeing a 3-1 lead in the second disappear against the three-time semi-finalist. Muguruza, who has only one tour title to her name, then took victory with a powerpacked flowing forehand, her 39th winner of the contest. "I have worked all my life for this, I have no words," said 20th seed Muguruza who will climb into the top 10 for the first time next week as a result of her performance at Wimbledon. "It was a tough match. Agnieszka has so much experience but I just wanted to keep fighting." Muguruza said she expected her family to fly to London to see Saturday's final having told them to stay away as not to jinx her

Sharapova 3-0 and Williams 2-1 although she did defeat the American at the French Open last year. The Spanish palyer, contesting her first Grand Slam semi-final after back-to-back runs to the French Open quarter-finals in 2014 and 2015, had enjoyed an impressive tournament. She had knocked out fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki and 10th-seeded Angelique Kerber to make the last four. Radwanska, the 2012 runnerup, hadn't faced a player inside the top 20. That battle-hardeed edge shone through on Centre Court as the 6ft (1.83m) Muguruza unleashed 12 winners to Radwanska's four in the opening set. Two breaks of serve in the first and fifth games gave her the opener in just 33 minutes with the Pole only managing to claim four points of the Spaniard's serve. Muguruza broke again in the opening game of the second set and it wasn't until the sixth game that the 26-yearold Radwanska carved out and converted a first break point to level at 3-3. Radwanska then raced through the second set, having collected five games on the trot. That became six on the bounce with a break in Garbine Muguruza of Spain plays a return to Agnieszka Radwanska of the first game of the decider Poland during the women's singles sem-ifinal match at the All England before the Spaniard stopped Lawn Tennis Championships in Wimbledon in London on Thursday. the rot with a break back for 1-1. progress. shot which took her to match In a tense conclusion, "My mother, father and point was called out -- possi- Muguruza broke for 4-2, rebrother will come over -- I bly by a member of Radwan- discovering the raw power of didn't want them to come be- ska's team in the player's box. her earlier dominance and fore in case things changed," "I challenged. Rohan Bopanna of India and Florin Mergea of Romania talk between points during the men's semifinal doubles match against Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships in Wimbledon, London on Thursday.

Bopanna-Mergea loses thrilling five-setter to Rojer and Tecau; narrowly lose the semifinals L

ondon: Rohan Bopanna's bid to enter his maiden Wimbledon doubles final came to a disappointing end as he along with his Romanian partner Florin Mergea lost a marathon five-setter against fourth seeded Dutch-Romanian pair of Jean JulienRojer and Horia Tecau. Julien-Rojer and Tecau won 4-6 6-2 6-3 4-6 13-11 in a contest that went on for three hours and 23 minutes. For Bopanna, it was yet again a case of being so near yet so far after he lost another marathon five-setter semi-final back in 2013. Ironically, his partner was Julien-Rojer, who ended up on the winning side. The final set turned out to be a battle of patience for both pairs as they held their respective services for 23 games. It was in the 24th game of the fifth set that the Indo-Romanian pair was broken and the match

ended there itself. The match started with Bopanna being broken in the very first game but Mergea's good returns saw them break back. The pair also broke Tecau to take the first set at 6-4. In the second set, it was the turn of the Dutch-Romanian pair to get a double break and win the set easily by 6-2 margin. The third set went nearly on similar lines as Bopanna-Mergea were broken once and lost the set at 3-6. Down 1-2, the Indo-Romanian pair came back strongly in the fourth set winning the coveted break and taking it at 6-4. However Bopanna despite his booming serves was not in his element as he made too many unforced errors both at the net and from the baseline. In all the pair committed 12 double faults including five in the fifth and final set itself.

Serena crushes Sharapova Rogers misses ton but scores 7th fifty C on way to women’s final W

IMBLEDON, ENGLAND: Serena Williams once again defeated Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon. Williams and Muguruza will square off in the ladies' final on Saturday, with the winner taking home $2.9 million. The 33-year-old Williams is 2-1 lifetime versus Muguruza, including a fourth- round victory at this year's Australian Open. The Spaniard stunned the American in the second round at last year's French Open. Williams will appear in her eighth career Wimbledon final, seeking her first title at the All England Club since 2012. The world No. 1 great beat the fourth-seeded former top-ranked star Sharapova for a 17th straight time with a routine 6-2, 6-4 decision on the famed Centre Court on Day 10 of the fortnight. Williams improved to 78-10 lifetime at the All England Club, where she's a fivetime champ and two-time runner-up. The reigning U.S. Open, Australian Open and French Open champ

Williams is going for a second career "Serena Slam," by winning four straight major championships over two seasons. The high-flying Williams has won her last 27 Grand Slam matches, including a victory over her fellow career Grand Slam winner Sharapova in this year's Aussie Open final. The American stalwart is now 18-2 lifetime against the Russian Sharapova, who hasn't beaten Williams since 2004. Williams has won 34 of her last 37 sets against Sharapova over the last 11 years. Williams is now 6-1 against Sharapova in Grand Slam events, with Sharapova's lone win coming in the 2004 Wimbledon finale. The 28-year-old Sharapova fell to 109 in her career major semis. Williams, who's a sizzling 38-1 this year, is seeking her 68th career WTA title and is 20-4 in her career Grand Slam finals. Only Margaret Court (24) and Steffi Graf (22) have captured more Grand Slam titles.

ARDIFF,WALES: Chris Rogers joined a select group of players with a seventh successive Test fifty as Australia made inroads into England’s first innings total on the second day of the Ashes opener in Cardiff on Thursday. Australia were 256 for four in reply to England’s 430. Rogers missed out on a deserved ton being snared for 95, He was caught by Joss Buttler of a Mark Wood delivery. Steven Smith, skipper Michael Clarke and Adam Voges all contributed well-made 30’s to keep the Aussie flag flying. Painful blow

Smith, now ranked as the world’s number one Test batman, got after Moeen Ali’s offbreaks with three fours in four balls, the first a classic drive from a batsman often described as “unorthodox”. England, lacking the sheer pace of Australia’s attack, found wickets hard to come by in nearideal batting conditions at a sundrenched Sophia Gardens. But Ali succeeded where England’s paceman had failed by dismissed the in-form Smith for 33. The world’s number one ranked Test batsman got himself in a terrible tangle to avoid being stumped as Ali responded to his charge by sending the ball legside. Smith got a leading edge and a fit-again Cook, belying his reputation for cautious captaincy, then held the catch having stationed himself in an unusual short mid-on position. Earlier Ali, batting at No 8 posted his second-highest Test score, following his 108 not out against Sri Lanka at Headingley last year, as England passed 400.

NOT A LAND FOR EQUALS Dipika Pallikal says she won’t play Nationals until women are offered equal prize money in competitions

By Bharat Sharma

New Delhi: India's topranked player Dipika Pallikal is conspicuous by her absence at the ongoing National Squash Championship but she remains firm on her stance of not being part of the premier domestic event until equal prize money is offered to male and female participants. Pallikal, who has Kerala roots, wanted to compete in the first ever Nationals in the state but with the prize purse being bigger for men, she decided to give the tournament a miss for the fourth year in a row. The 23-year-old last played the Nationals in 2011, when she won her first and only title till date. "The reason is the same why I haven't played in the last three years. I feel we deserve equal pay like most of the tournaments which are becoming equal prize money on the PSA professional circuit," Pallikal, the sole Indian to break into World's top-10, told PTI today. "I don't see why there should be a difference between men and women. I would have loved to play in Kerala and definitely miss playing the Nationals," said the player, who is currently ranked 18 in the world. Anish Mathew, secretary of Squash Rackets Federation of Kerala, said the total prize money of the tournament is Rs 6.7 lakh but winners' purse in either category has not been decided yet. However, it has been learnt that men's champion will pocket Rs 1,20,000 and women Rs 50,000. While Pallikal is not around, other top players Saurav Ghosal, Harinder Pal Sandhu and Joshana Chinappa are vying for top honours in their respective categories.

umbai: With a dearth of genuine pacers and the marked drop in quality of bowling in the Mumbai cricket team, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has roped in former Aussie quickie Jeff Thomson to coach and mentor Mumbai pacers. Speaking at a function yesterday, Dr. Makarand Waingankar, director, Cricket Operations, Excellence in Cricket said this initiative which is in association with IDBI Federal Life Insurance with be similar to what Mumbai cricket had when BCA[erstwhile Bombay Cricket Association]-Mafatlal Academy had when they roped in Frank Tyson to train the Mumbai bowlers. A number of pacers like Abey Kuruvilla, Paras Mhambery and Salil Ankola were products of the Mafatlal Academy who went on to play for the national team. “Balvinder Singh Sandhu will assist in the academy along with our Ranji coach Chandrakant Pandit. Thompson will be in India in September for a month and then will come back in May next year. He will prepare a programme which we will follow even during his absence and monitor all the players we have chosen during the camps,” said Waingankar. A pool of 30 fast-bowlers and spinners will be selected in the 19 years and above age group via a talent hunt and the training will commence from July 13 and will run up to May 31, 2017 with the training to be held at the MCA's facility at BandraKurla Complex throughout

They would be selected by MCA's selection committee headed by Milind Rege and by Pandit while former Mumbai and Maharashtra spinner Sairaj Bahutule will train the spinners in the camp in order to improve the spin-department which is depleted to say the least. Dilip Vengsarkar, vice-president, Mumbai Cricket Association recounted his first tour of Australia as a 21-yearold where the Indian team had to face the wrath of the pace attack. He said the difference in the 1977-78 series was only Jeff Thomson. “Jeff Thomson was a very big name in cricket when we toured Australia in 1977. I am glad he is coming to coach the fast bowlers. There is lot that the Mumbai bowlers can learn from him. If we want to

win matches, we need good bowlers. After all, only bowlers can win matches,” said Vengsarkar. However, the former Indian selector and the head of the Cricket Improvement Committee of MCA didn’t concur with suggestions that Mumbai cricket was at its worst. “I wouldn’t want to dwell in the past. We reached the semi-finals last season and that is a good sign for Mumbai cricket. I feel there is lot of untapped potential lying in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. Talent from places like Dahanu, Badlapur, Kalyan and Belapur needs to be tapped. We need to look ahead and pick what is good for Mumbai cricket. For that we have roped in the former Indian physiologist John Gloster who will look after our boys,” said Vengsarkar.

umbai: Vaishali R. of Tamil Nadu returned back to winning form and also regained the sole lead at the end of the 9th round of the of the Ram Ratna 42nd National Women’s Challenger ChessChampionship, which is being conducted by the Maharashtra Chess Association (MCA) in Mumbai on Thursday. Vaishali, having lost to top seed IM Tania Sachdev in the previous round, took full advantage of playing with the white pieces on the second board and quelled the challenge from statemate WIM Michelle Catherina P. to record a decisive win. The former World U-12 cham-

pion, Vaishali, who overnight shared the lead with Sachdev, now has 8 points and enjoys the top position as the latter dropped half a point in this round.Sachdev (2413) of Air India playing on the top board with black pieces was unable to overcome a spirited fight from Goa’s WGM Bhakti Kulkarni (2256) and was forced to settle for a draw and division of a point. She is now placed second with 7.5 points. Meanwhile on the 3rd board, WGM Swati Ghate (2279) of LIC had no answer to the clever manoeuvres of WGM Soumya Swaminathan (2363) of PSPB and finished on a losing note.

India start as favourites against Zim arare: India's bench Handed over the captaincy H strength will be tested in the absence of seniors, when a second string team young batsman Ajinkya takes on Zimbabwe in a three-match One-day series beginning here tomorrow with the youngsters as well as a few seniors hoping to capitalise on the opportunity. It is India's first assignment after heart-breaking seriesdefeat against Asian neighbours Bangladesh and taking the hosts lightly is hardly an option for the World Cup semifinalist as the African nation has shown progress and promise of late.

Rahane too has a point to prove after being trusted for the job by selectors. The diminutive batsman was dropped for the last two ODIs against Bangladesh and skipper Mahendra Singh justified his exclusion by saying that the Mumbai player struggles to rotate strike on slow pitches. Rahane responded sensibly to the criticism and politely asserted that he was playing well.

agent changed his phone number. “Now I’m just focused on my basketball. I have [a] great team, great coaches, great players and a great opportunity,” Singh said.

Head coach Carlisle also had words of praise for the 7 foot 2 inch player. “The decision to basically make him a D-Leaguer initially is a very good decision. And he understands, he likes it, he’s willing to do it. He needs experience playing over here. Guys like this — this size and with the softness of his hands and his footwork — aren’t grown on trees,” Carlisle pointed. Mavs also introduced their top pick Justin Anderson. The Dallas Mavericks selected Anderson with the No. 21 overall pick in the first round of this year's NBA Draft. Anderson and Singh will both play on the Mavericks' team in the Las Vegas Summer League, which tips off on Friday, July 10, 2015 in Las Vegas.

umbai: Being the best platform for school students to showcase their sporting talents over the years, Mumbai School Sports Association [MSSA] is looking to throw it's net wider and ensure the participation of more and more schools in sporting events, with stress being laid on BMC [BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation] run schools. Having close to 300 schools under its wing with the number steadily rising every year, there is a healthy competition amongst participating schools at MSSA - with football, cricket and athletics being the most popular sports. The MSSA has also waived off the participation fees in order to increase the participation in the competition as most of the BMC-run schools operate on a shoe-string budget which makes it very diffcult to sponsor the children's extra-curricular activities. “We only charge the government run schools the initial entry fees. We make sure that the participation fee for the events is waived off, keeping in mind the students from these schools may not be able to afford the same. We want as many schools and children to be involved with

AIFF launches pilot project in seven states

New Delhi: Keen on restructuring and laying a path for development of State Associations, All India Football Federation (AIFF) is launching a pilot project in seven states across the country. The project kicks-off in Kolkata and would visit the other five provisional venues for the FIFA 2017 U-17 World Cup -- Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi and Guwahati. In addition, Mizoram Football Association has also been included for its involvement at the grassroot level and youth development. AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said the project is a part of the four years "AIFF Strategic Plan". "As per the Four Years Strategic Plan created with the help of FIFA, it was clear that the capacities of the State Associations need to be improved significantly for the development of Indian football. "Accordingly it was decided that the capacities of the six State Associations, which are the provisional venues must be enhanced to start with," Das said. "Furthermore, as the Mizoram Football Association has put in a tremendous effort to start the revolution at the grassroots and youth development, they too have been included as part of the development plan," he added.

Fr Jude, President, MSSA said that this initiative has yielded dividends with more matches being played and more teams participating especially from the BMC-run schools extending the football season in to the month of January. “Close to 2,000 football matches are played between July and January and the number is rising every year,” said Fr Jude. When asked about what the association will do to sup-

port government run schools, equally with the privately run he added, “Children should schools, Fr Jude said, “Yes, ofnever suffer due to matters course. Some of the kids playconcerning money. I can assure you that the MSSA does everything in its capacity to help schools or students if they ever fall short of anything. We are even more than happy to help tap individual talent if the child is worthy.” There is an increasing number schools [approximately 30] which are now coming forward and participating in sports activities and the number is likey to increase this year. When asked if they are able to compete

ing for these schools are really talented and are a joy to watch. The Colaba Municipal Secondary School has been very involved and have stood out the most.” Being funded by the Mumbai Indians, MSSA are now looking to lay out astro-turf in order to improve the quality of sports being played and hence making it even more enjoyable for the children. “The pitch gets really wet and mucky during the monsoon and it is difficult for the children to play on. We are hoping to lay out astro-turf and improve the seating arrangement in the stands,” said Fr Jude. Apart from funding BMC schools, MSSA has also formed a girl's football academy in order to give girls a larger platform to participate in school sports. “This academy is for girls between 12-15

years of age. We are looking to give them more competitions to participate in and also test themselves against some of the best in the country. These girls can still be a part of the academy once they pass out of school,” said Fernandes. The importance of encouraging students participation in sports was further acknowledged by Amber Singh Magar, Principal of Colaba Municipal Secondary School, who assserted. “We always face a crunch when it comes to resources and do whatever we can in order to pool in and give the children the necessary tools to participate in various sports. We would really appreciate whatever help we can get in order to provide the children with the necessary clothing, shoes and top quality coaching in order to tap hidden talent and help us compete with the best.”

Six of these ten players -Chhetri, Robin Singh, Thoi Singh, Izumi, Edathodika and Karanjeet -- have signed with Football Sports Development Limited, the promoters of Hero ISL, as free agents. Jackichand Singh and Seityasen Singh have been loaned from I- League club Royal Wahingdoh FC while Rino Anto and Eugeneson Lyngdoh are loaned from Bengaluru FC. ‘Gopi did no wrong, but Sports Ministry could have done much’ By Bapu Narayankar

B

engaluru: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa might have accused Pullela Gopichand of bais but former coach Vimal Kumar said the national chief coach has done no wrong and felt the Sports Ministry could have included the top women's doubles pair in the TOP Scheme. Commenting on the raging tiff between Jwala-Ashwini and Gopichand, Vimal told PTI: "I don't think that Gopi has done anything wrong in this particular aspect. The Sports Ministry could have included Jwala and Ashwini in the TOP Scheme." "If they (Jwala and Ashwini) are included in that category and provided the support, definitely it would be of use," he added. Asked how he would have addressed the issue, Vimal said: "My approach would have been - if the players have done well and come in top 13, then I would have pushed their case. For Olympic qualifications, we need specialised attention in doubles. "We need some experts travelling with us which will

help us for the next one year. This approach would have been better rather than the issue turning into a personal tiff," said Vimal, who has been coaching Saina Nehwal ever since she split with longtime coach Gopichand. Asked if it was fair on the part of the players to level allegations against Gopichand, Vimal said, "Yes, because he is a national coach, and in that capacity the players feel he should push their case a lot more." Further enquired if it was in Gopichand's hands to push Jwala and Ashwini's case, Vimal said he was unsure but suggested that the panel members of TOP Scheme should take a relook

into the whole issue. "Whether it is in his hands I am not very sure. I also don't think it is entirely up to him. There are other panel members, may be they should have a relook at the whole thing," said Vimal. A former National champion, Vimal said the outburst of Jwala and Ashwini for non-inclusion in TOP Scheme should be seen in the backdrop of the singles players getting all attention. "In any sports, attention is fully on single players, whether it is lawn tennis or badminton, doubles players don't get much importance. Whether it has been Wimbledon or French Open, it has always been singles players. That's how it is," he said.

‘Zico is perfect for FIFA presidency’ N ew Delhi: Brazilian World Cup winner Roberto Carlos backed his legendary country-mate Zico to succeed embattled Sepp Blatter as president of controversyplagued FIFA, world football's governing body. "Zico is the perfect choice, Zico is a phenomena... One of the great coaches I have had in my career," Carlos said about the 62-year-old great when asked about a suitable candidate for the top job. The 42-year-old Carlos was today unveiled as Delhi Dynamos' marquee managercup-player for the second season of Indian Super league football. Zico had last month confirmed he would stand in

the election to succeed Blatter as president of FIFA, although he admitted he may struggle to find enough support."I would like to confirm the decision to be a candidate. I feel I am capable. For sure, certain rules need to change," not least the constant 'horsetrading' necessitated by the need to gather the support of at least five federations. "That need to have five federations behind you, I think that is where the corruption starts as favours are offered, asked for or called in," Zico had said. Carlos called Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as great players but asked to watch out for Neymar in the coming years.
