As the Sena chief was leaving, the opposition leaders boycotted the house and refused to cast their votes for the post of Deputy Mayor, as the municipal secretary did not take action against this intrusion by the Sena chief. Leader of Oppostion, Devendra Amberkar of the Congress said, “Entering the house without an announcement will be not tolerated. No one is allowed to enter during proceedings. The opposition leaders have demanded an inquiry against municipal secretary Narayan Pathade and former Mayor Sunil Prabhu for supporting this. We had to boycott the election proceedings in the middle because this kind of 'Dadagiri' cannot be tolerated. Dilapidated buildings, cess buildings and buildings of government and state run Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) of over 40 years will be entitled for redevelopment under the proposed cluster development policy. There are around 19,000 old and dilapidated buildings in the island city. According to the policy, 70 per cent assent of the owners will be required for the redevelopment while
the approval of remaining 30 per cent will be sought in a year. Such approval will not be required from owners of dilapidated buildings and those declared risky to reside. In such cases, the government will acquire the land and incorporate those buildings under the cluster development policy. In the island city, around 1,000 to 1,500 parcels of land have been identified for cluster development. If there are slums in the cluster, they could be put in the scheme. If nondilapidated buildings wanted to be part of the scheme, that also could be considered.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA, is an engineering marvel that was completed in 1937. But this rivetingly red structure has also garnered the title of the 'most popular suicide point in the world'. In its 77-year-history, there have been 1,653 recorded suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge, averaging 37 per year. In June, 77 years after it was constructed, the Golden Gate Bridge Board of Directors unanimously approved $76 million in funding to erect a 20-foot-wide steel net – extending out from each side of the 2.7 km span – to deter would-be jumpers. Boyack, 91, and Dubes, 90, held hands during the intimate ceremony, during which Reverend Linda Hunsaker reportedly told the couple, “This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago.” Friend Jerry Yeast agreed, telling the Times: “I’ve known these two women all my life, and I can tell you, they are special. This is a very special day for all of us.” The women met in their hometown of Yale, Iowa, before moving to Davenport in 1947, where Boyack taught school and Dubes did payroll work, according to the Associated Press.

he Bombay High Court on Tuesday sentenced Santosh M Mane to death, for hijacking a state transport bus which killed nine people, leaving 36 others injured , two years ago in Pune. The order was passed by the division bench comprising Justice VM Kanade and Justice PD Kode, who said it was a 'rarest of rare case', and upheld the verdict of the Pune Additional Sessions Court, by awarding Mane the death penalty. While delivering the judgment, the court observed, “This is an exceptional and rarest of rare case where the crime is so cruel, diabolical and revolting so as to shock the collective conscience of
society.” Making an observation on the order of the death penalty, the court said, “We, therefore, have to do this unpleasant task of upholding the death penalty, though we concur with some of the views expressed by the people who advocate the abolition of death penalty from the statute book. Yet, as long as death penalty remains in the book, we have to carry out this task of deliberating whether the death penalty was justified in this case and we feel it was.” At 8 15 am on January 25, 2012, in a fit of rage after he was denied a transfer from night duty to day duty with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) where he worked, Mane hijacked a bus from the

Mane, now 38 years old, was somehow stopped by stunned members of the public who started thrashing him before the police apprehended him. tenced him to death. Shevale had rejected his plea of being in an “unsound state of mind” and even passed strictures on the defence witness — psychiatrist Dilip Burte — for bearing false witness in court. Observing that Mane was not heard by the trial court on the point of sentence, in September the Bombay High Court heard an appeal filed by the driver against the death penalty award, but the bench of Justices PV Hardas and PN Deshmukh held that it would be just and proper if the accused was heard on the point of sentence. Once convicted, the accused is allowed to make submissions on what kind of sentence should be awarded. The bench remanded the matter back to the trial court

and ordered that Mane be produced before the trial court in Pune on October 15, 2013. After the judge hears him, he would pass an order on the punishment to be awarded, the bench ruled. On December 11, 2013, the Pune trial court again pronounced him guilty and awarded the death sentence (given eight months before). Mane also underwent three medical check-ups at a Pune government mental hospital to verify his claims of being 'mentally unsound' and all the reports came back negative, proving he was mentally stable at the time of the incident and during the trial. At one point, he even claimed that he was under the influence of black magic, but the court dismissed it saying the claim did not fall under hallucination.

n Monday, the last day of 10-day Ganesh festival, when thousands of devotees flocked to the beaches of Mumbai to bid Lord Ganesh adieu, a few of them got bitten by some sea creatures which could be either stingrays or jelly fish, at Juhu beach, a hotspot for Ganesh immersions. At the time of going to the press, 18 people were admitted to BMC run Cooper hospital after they were bitten by stingrays at the Juhu beach. While most of them were dis-
charged after being given treatment on an Outpatient Department (OPD) basis, two had to be admitted for further treatment but were also discharged later. “Out of the 18 cases from Juhu beach that had come to us, two had to be admitted. One of them was discharged on Monday itself while the other was discharged today (Tuesday),” said Dr S Gawde, Medical Superintendent, Cooper hospital. he discharge application in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case yesterday was adjourned till September 17 and will be heard by Special Judge B H Loya. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah is one of the accused. There are 17 other accused in the case. The trial is going on at Special Judge B H Loya's courtroom in the Sessions Court, Mumbai. The court has already warned all the accused along with Shah on August 14 regarding their regular absence from court hear-
ings. The court also said that if the accused will continue to remain absent from court hearings without giving a valid reason, proper action will be taken against them. Earlier the trial was conducted at Special CBI Jugde J T Utpat's courtroom. But he was reportedly transferred to Pune and since then the case is being heard in Special Judge B H Loya's courtroom. In the month of July, Sohrabuddin's brother opposed the exemption granted to BJP president Amit Shah and other accused. But he was told that the accused will be called when required.

I wasn’t even able to stand or walk. I was rushed to the hospital after consulting a doctor at the beach.” “No serious harm was caused to anybody. And what was it that actually bit people, stingray or jellyfish or something else is yet to be ascertained,” said Dr Mangala Gomare, chief epidemiologist, BMC. Last year, close to 70 people had suffered stingray bites at Girgaum Chowpatty and the BMC had come up with certain protocols like having medical aid at visarjan spots, not allowing children inside deep waters, etc,. to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

ith four RTOs working efficiently every day, checking at least 6,000 re-calibrated metres every day, Mumbai's 45,000 taxis should be able to meet the 45-day deadline (September 28) set by Bombay High Court to recalibrate the metres according to the new fares that have been hiked by Rs 2. However, the chips used to run the recalibration process, which are supplied by the Standard Metre Manufacturing Unit in Pune and Sansui Electronics, are costing the taxi drivers Rs 350 to Rs 500, when they generally cost as little as Rs 50. A.L. Quadros, the leader of the Mumbai Taximen's Union, said, “More than 6,000 taxis are being re-calibrated every day. But the companies which supply the recalibration chips are charging high prices.” K.T. Golani, secretary of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority, elaborated on how the recali-

bration was progressing. He said, “More than 1,200 taxis and autorickshaws are checked at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Tardeo every day. Taxis with MH01 registration number are checked in Tardeo RTO, MH02 are checked in the Andheri RTO and MH03 are checked in the Wadala RTO.” Quadros further added, “So far, 15,000 taxis have been recalibrated. There is a lot of money being wasted on the re-calibration process and the in-between agents. Metre re-calibration takes about three to four days and about
1,500 taxis are off the road every day. I am proposing to the transport dept to use advanced technology that is available through which the pro-cess could be simplified, Less people will be involved and money will not be wasted.” There is also a peculiar problem the drivers are facing now that the fares have been hiked. Quadros said, “The fare hike is actually a loss for taxi drivers. Now that the minimum fare is Rs 21, the customer sometimes refuse to give the Re.1 saying they don’t have change.”

A
35-year-old resident of Kalina was arrested by the Vakola police on Monday for allegedly beating up two of his sons for not studying. The incident was brought to light by one of the neighbours of the accused, where the children used to visit to watch television. The neighbour reportedly saw that the children were unusually limping on Monday morning and inquired with them about it. The children claimed that they had been severely assaulted and beaten up by their father with a rolling pin. After the incident, both the boys went to watch television at Yashoda Baban Salvi's residence when she noticed that one of them had lost two teeth while the other was unable to walk properly. After Yashoda alerted another neighbour, he rang up

Rajawadi doctor accused of neglecting dying man By Shwetha Kannan
A
doctor from Rajawadi Hospital, a BMC-run peripheral hospital at Ghatkopar, is being held responsible for the death of a 48-year-old man on Sunday, Sept 7, for not giving him the required medical attention. At about 5 am on Sunday morning, Dattaram Vishnu Sakpal, a volunteer for Parshiwada Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal at Ghatkopar, was at the pandal when he suddenly experienced giddiness. “When he started feeling unwell, we rushed him to Rajawadi hospital and reached there at 5 30 am. Nobody there would helped us. The officer on duty, Dr Preeti Jadhav asked us take him to the outpatient dept (OPD). We
knew something was wrong with Dattaram because he started complaining of chest pain. But instead of checking his blood pressure or ordering an ECG, we were asked to go to the OPD. They told us that the paper roll for an ECG was not available because it was Sunday. So we made Dattaram lie down on a bench and one of us went to get the case papers. The OPD opens only at 9 am but there was already a lone of people. A security guard saw Dattaram and asked us to take him for an ECG immediates. On our way to the ECG department, Dattaram lost conciousness again, so we took him to the Intensive Care Unit. There he was given all the medical assistance he required, but it was
too late. At 8 30 am, he died,” said Pradeep Pandey, friend of the deceased and secretary of Parshiwada Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal. Accusing Dr Jadhav of negligence, Pandey said, “The ICU staff did all that they could do, but this happened because of Dr Jadhav. Had she taken it serious, my friend would have probaly lived. She made no attempt to assist us. We want the hospital to take action against her. We have submitted a written complaint to the medical superintendent.” The family and mandal at first refused to accept the body and relented only when they got an assurance from the hospital that an inquiry would be conducted. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Police claim to crack Borivli murder case solved Daughter's friend kills woman to steal jewellery By Zuber Ansari
F
our days after a 45-yearold housewife was robbed and murdered at her flat in Borivli, the police has claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of a 29year-old unemployed man, who was a friend of the victim's teenaged daughter. The accused has been identified as Rajendra Karanjekar, a friend of the deceased's daughter, who was grilled on suspicion for several hours after which he spilled the beans and confessed to killing the woman and then robbing her valuables, informed Deputy Police Commissioner (DCPZone XI) Balsingh Rajput. Accused Karanjekar was arrested on Monday night, police said adding that the unemployed had incurred debts, which prompted him to plot the robbery but he also ended up murdering the woman. The victim, identified as Seema Patade, was alone inside her residence in the Krishna Classic high-rise when Karanjekar smothered her to death on Friday evening, police said. Patade's daughter Manasi (17) found her dead upon her return from college. The victim's husband was out of station on the day of the incident. "Since there was no forced entry into the house, we suspected it was a handiwork of a person, who was known to the victim," said Rajput. Narrowing down the list of suspects, Karanjekar was brought for questioning. "Initially he denied his role in the
The accused Rajendra Karanjekar being led away by the police. crime outright. However, technical and circumstantial evidences have nailed his lies," the DCP said. The culprit had earlier visited Patade's house with Manasi, police said. On the day of incident, the accused reached the house when Seema was alone. While Seema went to another room, Karanjekar sneaked into her bedroom and was searching for ornaments in a cupboard when the victim confronted him and tried to stop him from stealing the valuables.
Scared of being held by police, he overpowered her and smothered her to death with a pillow and decamped from the house with the valuables that are presently being recovered, police said. The police has seized the CCTV footage of the building in which they found that accused Karanjekar has entered the building on the day of incident, we have recovered Rs 4.15 lakh worth of valuables from the residence of the accused in Meghwadi in Jogeshwari (E).

haratiya Janata Party (BJP) will not retain former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders like Babanrao Pachpute and Dr Vijaykumar Gavit if any proof of alleged corruption is produced against them, stated leader of opposition in the legislative assembly Eknath Khadse. Speaking to newspersons here yesterday, the senior BJP leader further added that if the proofs are produced against them then he himself would recommend filing of First Information Report (FIR) against the two former NCP leaders who joined the BJP recently. Earlier, Khadse welcomed former Congress MLA Sadashiv Sapkal of Javli in Satara district and ex-MP Sadashiv Kamble from Osmanabad into the party fold. The senior BJP leader further stated that the Congress-NCP government had dismissed the charges against Pachpute and Gavit in the assembly. Khadse wanted to know from the NCP leadership as to how come their two former ministers sudEknath Khadse denly became tainted after they quit the party. Replying to queries over resentment in the party ranks over induction of leaders from ruling Congress-NCP alliance, he said that the party had to induct leaders from rival parties in some regions like W. Maharashtra and Marathwada where the party was not strong at the grassroots. Replying to queries over stalemate in seat sharing talks, he said that after the seat sharing formula for the other four allies of the alliance are sorted out, the BJP and Shiv Sena will decide among themselves as to how many seats they should contest. When asked about ally and MP Raju Shetty staging demonstration over Union government's onion policy, he disclosed that the Union govt is bringing amendment to the policy to provide strict action against middlemen.
State lends a hand to J&K crisis By A Special Correspondent

he state government has announced aid of Rs10 crore for the flood-hit people of Jammu and Kashmir, as the situation in the state worsens every day. Chief Minister (CM) Prithviraj Chavanon Monday evening announced the aid, which will come from the CM Relief Fund, as the deadline for the election model code of conduct approches. This amount was sent to the Jammu Kashmir government yesterday. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chipped in with a consignment of 20 rubber and motorised fibre boats to help the flood relief operations in the deluged state. MPCC president Manikrao Thakre and others dispatched the consignment by flight to Srinagar yesterday morning.“The entire state of Maharashtra is standing behind our Kashmiri brethren in this hour of natural disaster. We shall make all efforts to help rehabilitate them from this calamity,” Thakre said, speaking to reporters.

Poaching game T on in Delhi T
HE poaching game is on: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress are trying to get support and form government. The AAP is saying that a BJP MLA had offered it Rs.4 crore for crossing over and helping his party to form government in Delhi. The AAP declares it has a sting video to show the actual transactions going on in this regard. The Congress party says the AAP is trying to get its support. AAP’s Manish Sisodia wants to become the chief minister. In the Delhi assembly, the BJP has 29 members, the AAP has 27 and the Congress 8. It looks like no party wants assembly elections. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal knows well that quite a few leaders of his party are distancing themselves from him. The party is no longer united the way it was when the last Delhi elections were held. There was total unity in the party then. Some of the leaders of AAP are now critical of Arvind Kejriwal. Aware of this development, the BJP is trying all possible ways to get the AAP MLAs to join it. The BJP’s new president Amit Shah seems to think that he can get half a dozen AAP members to join his party. It is this consideration that must have made him decide on the poaching game. What must be noted is that the BJP would not have made the move unless it was certain it would get results.

HERE was time when the people in Pakistan came to the streets to defend their democratic system from the onslaught by the military which wanted its say in the country’s affairs. Today, the same people want the military to intervene to save whatever is left of the democratic structure in their country. This was visibly seen when the popularlyelected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met the Chief of Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif, to request him to assist. Nawaz Sharif thought that he could get away quietly with a civilian Prime Minister seeking military help. But the army has issued an official press release to state that the Prime Minister made the request which the army chief did not accept. The army’s explanation was that traditionally its role in a democratic setup was to defend the country, not to run it.

many a time before. Willingly or unwillingly, the military has ruled the country for 37 years, half of the period since its independence. No democratic country wants the army to rule it. A few Opposition leaders were candid enough to say that the army should have a role in the country’s governance. However, leading political parties are not prepared for it. Still the question that confronts Pakistan is the type of polity it should have to have all on board, including the military. General Zia-ul Haq, who did the greatest harm to Pakistan’s democratic system as a martial law administrator, said that probably a Turkey-like model which recognizes the military role in governance would strengthen the Pakistan system. The Turkish constitution lays down that the army can intervene if and
Nawaz Sharif's mis-governance In fact, Prime Minister Sharif has brought this misery upon himself. His mis-governance has alienated the people. They want him and his brother, Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, to quit and hold mid-term polls. Instead, Nawaz Sharif had a resolution passed by Parliament to back him. It does not help the situation because both of his opponents, Imran Khan of Tehreek-i-Insaaf and Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), are from a civilian set-up. Some leaders opposing Nawaz Sharif have demanded a mid-term poll. Their thinking is that the people must once again decide whether they want Nawaz Sharif, who has lost lustre or someone else should run the government. Whether the fresh elections would throw up any other person who is acceptable to Sindh, North Western Province and Baluchistan, apart from Punjab, is in the realm of conjecture. Yet the once-hated military would get sanction from the people to run the administration if polls were to be held. Whether or not world opinion accepts it, the military appears to be the only unifying factor. However, it is reluctant to intervene as the meeting of army commanders has revealed. Still what has happened in Pakistan is a soft coup. The army is at the centre of whatever is happening in the country. The mood of the people was to see the back of the army. But in the current situation, the question is: what is the way out. Pakistan has faced such a situation
tutional machinery in. Pakistan is no exception. Not long ago, Nawaz Sharif was pulled down by the army from prime ministership. His call on the army chief now to intervene is a full turnabout. But he does not realize that the army will have no hesitation in staging a coup as and when it feels or whenever the situation demands. That is the reason why Nawaz Sharif brings in parliamentary democracy in his statements to underline that the role of the army can, at best, be only temporary. Even then, the intervention by the armed forces is happening too often in Pakistan. The people are getting used to it and associating stability with the military’s governance. This feeling is anti-democratic in content because the discipline of soldiers is tantamount to authoritarianism, in contrast to the people’s participation in a democratic society.
Democracy in siege
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar when democracy is derailed. But it was rejected by the popular elected leaders. Today, the army is acting as a go-between to convey the viewpoint from one political faction to another. It is considered a neutral party. There is enough evidence of this at Islamabad as the popular cricketer-turnedpolitician Imran Khan is calling the shots. He has declared that his men — who are protesting in the streets of the capital itself — will not leave until Nawaz Sharif has submitted his resignation. PAT’s Qadri, a fundamentalist, too has joined the chorus to get rid of Nawaz Sharif. Contact with the people is the basic requirement of democracy. And Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has maintained it through public meetings. His stance is that whatever they are doing is tantamount to defending the institutions to sustain democratic and consti-
One feels sorry over the spectacle in Pakistan. People there are no different from those in India. But mis-governance at the top made the army to walk in once. General Ayub Khan, then the army chief, took advantage and imposed martial law. His rule lasted for eight years. And once the army took over, its influence stayed even after the troops went back to the barracks. Since then the situation in Pakistan has remained in flux. In fact, the strong methods used by the army were responsible for East Pakistan to secede, giving birth to Bangladesh. Unfortunately, both Pakistan and Bangladesh, however democratic in declaration, are essentially at the receiving end of a telephone call from the military head quarters. Still, whatever has been retained in the form of elections gives democracy a flicker of hope. A retired military army official has predicted that Nawaz Sharif would come back with a reduced strength if a mid-term poll were to be held. Nonetheless, it would be a sad end to the people’s rule because a democratically elected Prime Minister has been asked to step down by people like Imran Khan who has only 38 seats in the house of 342 members, including 60 reserved seats. But how long would it take for the elections to be held or what shape they assume is anybody’s guess. Until then, the democratic setup in Pakistan is under siege.
True power is not in trying to gain power, it is in becoming a power T
HE teaching of Jesus Christ, from beginning to the end, is to rise above mortality, to find out about life, to learn the art, the science of living. All the scriptures, every philosopher and mystic, teach this. And why do they teach this? Because if there is one thing undesirable it is mortality, death. No sane person would ask for death. Desire for death is not a natural desire, and even when the mind is craving for death the soul is longing for life. The soul is living. It is life itself. Death is something foreign to it. It does not know death. That is why even the smallest insect protects itself in every way. It does not wish to die. What we call death is our impression of a change. Life is subject to change, and death is only a change of life. But making people believe in immortality and making them rise above the fear of death should be done
gradually and not suddenly, for otherwise this knowledge would frighten a person more than death itself. It is for that reason that the knowledge of this truth was made a mystical, secret science. Otherwise there would have
MATTER & SPIRIT been no reason for withholding something as precious as that knowledge from one's fellow men. When a person is awakened suddenly he suffers a great shock, physically and mentally, and it takes him a long time to recover. It is the same with all spiritual truths. This is why there are initiations and a vow of secrecy. One cannot place a dinner before a newborn infant. He must first be fed with milk. Then there is the desire for power. Man desires power, because it is natural for him to gain. Somewhere a power is hidden in him,
he cannot help it. But man is powerless in spite of the power which is hidden in him. The powerlessness, the experience of being powerless, is his ignorance of the power within him. In order to open the doors, in order to see the power he has in store, it is necessary to seek the kingdom of God, as it is said in the Bible, for then he will find his divine heritage, which is all power. True power is not in trying to gain power. True power is in becoming power. But how to become power? It requires an attempt to make a definite change in oneself and that change is a kind of struggle with one's false self. When the false self is crucified, then the true self is resurrected. Before the world this crucifixion appears to be lack of power, but in truth all power is attained by this resurrection. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Modi government under scanner BEFORE accusing the BJP of trying to divide the country on the basis of religion, the 'secular' parties should check their own records in the matter: Who created an exclusively Muslim-majority district called Mallapuram in Kerala, and that too, after Independence? Who made the demand for allowing Pakistani currency to be made a valid tender for circulation in Jammu & Kashmir? Was a charge of sedition slapped against the person? Who compensated only the Muslim families which suffered during the Godhra riots, and recently, in the Muzzafarnagar communal disturbances? Does it mean that all the Hindus in these affected areas came out unscathed? The initial draft of the Communal Violence Bill contained a provision to penalise only the majority community (read Hindus) in the event of a Hindu-Muslim riot. Did any 'secularist' raise any objection to this totally one-sided clause? Obviously, this clause was not made applicable to J&K. During the decade-long UPA rule, who had advocated grant of Indian citizenship to all the Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators?

THE Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become a power hungry party and is desperate in buying the Aam Admi Paty (MLA) to form the Delhi government by paying crores of rupees. This proves that the saffron outfit has shown its absolutely naked power hungry face by engaging in this illegal activity and it is hoped that the Supreme Court will order fresh polls soon in Delhi. I strongly feel that the BJP which does not have the numbers, cannot come to power by defection and ensuring abstentions as both must be involved inducements. It is immoral, indefensible and illegal. The BJP must stop this dirty game as it has been exposed and caught red-handed in the sting operation in which the BJP Delhi leader directly offers crores of rupees to an AAP MLA for support and forming the Delhi government. It is high time that the BJP high command must explain this dirty game to the people of Delhi and the entire country.
Anti India protestors, those who were pelting stones and those demanding independence for Kashmir and slamming our security forces. Where are those jihadists now? Where is the bunch of so-called sympathisers from Hurriyat, who seem to have more care and concern for the Kashmiris? Ultimately, it is the government of India and the Indian Army and Air Forces which are rendering selfless and yeoman services to help the Kashmiris . Will those separatists and also the CM and other politicians of Kashmir, learn a lesson from nature’s fury ? And understand that it’s only the Indian government OF and the armed forces that LETTER THE DAY can always come to the rescue of Kashmir, during such disasters? Kasmiris can bank upon the support of only India and its government and the forces – not of anyone from across the border or particularly those separatists. The PM has declared the J&K floods as a national disaster and has assured all-round help and assistance from the government and has announced Rs 1,000 crore for many relief measures. Further, the Centre mismanaged information dissemination as on 26/11 when visual media gave a running commentary like a cricket match. Technology enables faster reporting and this aggravates the public vision of the crisis, while the capacity of the human mind to respond has remained the same. The imbalance has to be corrected by reducing both flow and quantum of information, making it available only to a select group, on a need to know basis, till the crisis is over. It would reduce external pressures by denying information to the common public which has its own avoidable effects and consequences, including political. Since childhood, in one way or the other we have been told that they are our enemies. For example, let's take the Kashmir issue. Both the countries think that the state belongs to them. As an Indian I had my reasons to believe that Kashmir belongs to us. But after this camp where I was with Pakistani Seeds (volun-

He further added, “After meeting Pakistani participants I came to know about their problems as well. I realised that their country is going through a bad phase.” The participants also

Divyushi, one of the seeds said, “Our news media filters out the information. It decides what people should know about the situation at the border. Our country's media will blame Pakistan for violation of the ceasefire at the border. And the Pakistani media does the same thing by blaming India. People don't get fact based information.” She further added, “We entered the camp with a pro-India mindset. But at the camp during our dialogues our understanding of the issues improved. We lived together, became friends, shared secrets and now we are out with a new bunch of friends.” “Our initial mindset was 'we are right and you are wrong'. But the camp taught us to not to be blindly patriotic. It taught us that being patriotic doesn't mean that you blindly believe in your government, but it also means to be critical about its actions,” said Anaina. Jeffrey E Ellis, Press Officer, US Counsulate General addressed the young participants. He said, “I am glad that all the participants spoke about four important words – friendship, respect, understanding and dialogue. I believe these four words are the base for peace.”

MORE ON MASS COM:
I have done a BA in mass communication and journalism from Sikkim Manipal University, with a PG diploma in advertising and marketing communication, and three years of work experience in public relations. I am currently pursuing an MA in mass communication from Guru Jambleshwar University of Science and Technology through their distance education programme, while working at a PR agency. Now I want to apply for a PhD in mass communication under the UGC. Please guide me. — Firdosh Khan
If you are aspiring for a PhD programme, the requirement is to complete you Masters degree in the related area of study with minimum 55 per cent aggregate marks as well as an MPhil programme from a recognised university. However, some of the universities conduct entrance examinations for the same. Please check the admission details with the university from where you are aspiring to pursue your PhD.
My daughter has completed her Masters in Mass Media from Symbiosis, Pune, after doing a BBM from Ruia College, Matunga. She was then employed by a top TV channel. She would now like to pursue her further studies. What would you recommend? She did a radio-jockeying course and during her graduation, she had a brief stint (2 years) as an RJ at a radio station. She also displays an interest in programming. — Ravichandran Please understand that with her current educational qualification it would be more appropriate for her to gain more and more work experience in the industry, exploring different job profiles. If you are aspiring to take up managerial roles, then a postgraduate diploma/MBA in media management can be one of the available options. If she is interested in making a career in programming, it is best that she learns the nuances on the job. Try to seek opportunities, maybe in her current organisation or explore newer opportunities. I am sure that you are aware, that being an RJ is not just about talking, it’s about giving information in a way which is appealing to the masses and connects with the audiences. If she has those skills, knowledge and insight into the world of music, then certainly she can consider a career in it. Growth in the media industry will significantly relate to industry experience and on-the-job learning, rather than just acquiring further education. Both fields require different skill sets. Try to identify both objectively and then accordingly decide. If you have any queries for this column, contact us on education@afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 Continued from pg 13 « management skills, practical industry knowledge and professional experience. A degree in hospitality management covers all three areas and will open doors to generate opportunities in many more. Contrary to popular belief, the hospitality industry is not only composed of hotels and restaurants. It extends to cruise ships and airlines, spa and health destinations, theme parks and casinos, convention and event planning, recreation and sports management, and other tourist destinations and attractions, which all offer interesting career opportunities to qualified hospitality management staff. Salaries in the hospitality industry are strongly dependent on the level and region of employment, but generally correspond with a management salary in any global industry. Although a degree in hospitality management was initially designed to train management staff solely for the hospitality industry, many employers from other sectors have begun to appreciate the skill set students acquire in hospitality schools. Apart from the standard business knowledge, hospitality graduates possess a broad operational understanding, a high-level approach to service and a professionalism that allows them to work comfortably in a multicultural environment. These qualities are increasingly sought after by global employers, which provide additional appealing opportunities for graduates. For those who are interested in an international career, love other cultures and travelling, and enjoy management and business, a hospitality management degree is definitely a good choice. However, the required skill set for graduates constantly needs to be adapted to the industry developments. For example, online travel agencies and booking platforms first emerged in the last decade and have quickly become a crucial tool in customers’ decision-making processes. Subsequently, hotel managers are

expected to possess the technological know-how to understand the workings of these platforms to devise the best strategy for the company. This example clearly illustrates what a versatile and fast-paced industry hospitality is, requiring a high rate of flexibility and adaptability from employees, but at the same time providing a unique global work environment with unlimited opportunities, where each day brings new, rewarding experiences. There are different paths for young people to enter the world of hospitality. While there is a large array of hospitality educators worldwide, the top-ranked schools for an international hospitality career are found in Switzerland. Among these recognised Swiss schools is Glion Institute of Higher Education, located above Montreux and Lake Geneva, with a long-standing history of traditional education in the art of hotel management. Glion offers bachelor programmes spanning seven semesters—including two internships and different specialisations and study abroad options—that prepare high school graduates for an
international career in hospitality management. With an employment rate of more than 80 per cent, many graduates go on to management programmes of leading companies in and outside of the hospitality industry. It also has different postgraduate diploma courses targeted at industry professionals or careerchangers who wish to develop their skills over one to two years of applied and academic courses, allowing them to progress or re-launch their professional pursuits. MBA programmes can either be attended on campus or online, or as a combination of both, allowing industry managers to boost their careers through the latest industry knowledge in management, marketing and finance, without having to be absent from their workplace for a long period of time. The hospitality sector definitely offers a wide variety of career opportunities for qualified graduates with the management skills and practical knowledge they need not only in the traditional hotel and resorts sector, but also in a wider spectrum of industries such as spa and wellness, luxury retail and sports and entertainment.

A day-long festival was held to show their initiative and contribution towards society with the aim to have a platform for the NGOs to showcase their work and at the same time help the students to learn about them. The students were made acquainted with all the organisations present and to choose or connect with any one of them based on their understanding and willingness to get involved with the cause. It was an opportunity that provided both, students and parents, with a choice to be socially responsible. Simultaneously, it was a way to help these organisations with the support of school, to raise substantial funds for their causes. The mela was on from 9 am to 3 pm at Oberoi International School. Commenting on this occasion, Dr Vladimir Kuskovski – Principal, Oberoi International School said, “Here at OIS we firmly believe in the development of the whole child, which in other words means that our students’ education neither ends nor begins in the classroom alone. Social responsibility is one of our key core values, thus from early years we put a lot of emphasis on spreading awareness of the needs of the society around us and we teach our young to contribute to charitable causes, as it is a very important part, in our view, of human development.” The presence of over a dozen of NGOs working towards various causes leveraged a lot of excite-

“I have learnt that acting is as technical as engineering is,” says actor Sahil Phull, who plays Ashfaque in ‘Uttaran’
I
did my schooling in Jammu and Kashmir. After Class 12 in 2006, I moved to Mumbai where I studied telecom engineering. Being a fullfledged brat, I lived life to the fullest during school and college with my back-benchers group and a last moment study schedule. I was always in the mood for masti. I lived a youthful life. My college days were spent in the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology located on the Juhu-Versova Link Road. I completed my electronics and telecommunication engineering in 2010. The architecture of my college was just fantastic! I loved being on campus. My first day wasn’t great, but it wasn’t too bad either. Coming from a small town, I was a reserved guy. That first day was very different for me since I was from a boys’ school and I was too shy to talk to girls. I wasn't outgoing at all, but now look at me, I have changed so much. Well now girls are too shy to talk to me. I lived in a rented apartment which I shared with my friend who was also a fresher. Yes, of course, I was ragged. This took place in Yari Road where our seniors came home. The ragging incident wasn’t really a bad one, it was more to get to know each other. They asked us silly questions and ordered us to make the fan rotate without turning on the switch. They expected us to call them 'Sir', and this entertainment went on for two days. I would term this incident as a silly one. Travelling was a little tough, especially during the rains. I usually took a bus or walked like other students. But that’s a phase of life everyone has to go through. All my professors were good in their own way. Some were strict, some were calm and softspoken. But belonging to the back-benchers group, I was never in their good books. We had this project where we had to choose a
professor to mentor us, but none of the professors were ready to take us, on account of how notorious we were. Then finally a professor took us and guess what? Our group stood second in the class. That was an overwhelming experience. There was this one professor I shall never forget – Mr Vodake. He was a super strict teacher but had a soft coner for me since he knew the hardships that an outstation student goes through, especially one from Jammu and Kashmir. And this made my classmates envy me. My studies were good and my favourite subject was math. The only subject I didn’t like was mechanical drawing. It was the first time in life I got a 'KT' in a subject. I have never been an obedient kid to start studying on time. I would pick up an intelligent student, sit with him for two days before the exams and learn stuff from him. That’s how I have always studied. College life was superb just like any youngster would want it to be, bunking class, going late for lectures, being scolded by teachers. My favourite joints were the vadapav-walla and the dosa joints near Mithibhai College and anda-bhurji and andapav near my college area. I’m a foodie and I miss

it. As an actor where I have to look and feel good, I can’t eat junk food anymore. Tuesday was our movie day. We would never miss it because every Tuesday there was a 1+1 offer and 15 of us would go to the famous Adlabs in Andheri. Friends? They were true Mumbaikars, accommodating and fun-loving. I used to relish their home-made chicken and other dishes. Yes, I was full of pranks too. I played a prank on my friend Paresh Kalve when we were very drunk. We had reached my place and I had forgotten the keys, so asked him to wait there. Since the building was under renovation, I went down and came up by stairs, went inside and opened the door for him. He was shocked. He kept asking, “How did you come in?” I convinced him that I was sleeping inside only and I opened the door because he had rung the bell. The next morning I told him what I did and we burst into hysterical laughter. Once my friends and I were caught driving drunk. The cop didn’t let us go till 5 am. He asked us to pay a fine or to call our lawyer. Finally we bribed him and left. That taught me a lesson never to drink and drive. My most embarrassing moment during college was when I mistook a girl who looked just like my girlfriend from the back. This happened near Four Bungalows. I grabbed her around the neck from the back. Then to my shock, I saw that she wasn’t my girlfriend. We were both very embarrassed. There were around 50 people around who saw us. My education has definitely helped me. People used to say, “Yaar, actor hi banna tha, toh engineering kyu ki?” But I believe whatever you study never goes to waste. I have learnt that acting is as technical as engineering is. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

« MENTOR’S DESK FIITJEE’S FTSE TO BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 21
For students preparing for JEE examination, here is an opportunity to appear for an all-India competition that matches the level and scale of the IIT entrance, but is actually meant to examine the students for their preparedness for the all important test. FIITJEE will hold its annual Talent Support Exam (FTSE) on September 21 this year, across more than 60 test centers in India. As they prepare for entrance to IITs and other engineering institutes, FTSE gives students a unique opportunity to check how much distance they need to travel in their preparations. Through the all-India FTSE, students are able to gauge where they stand in competition with their peers, and the course correction they need. FIITJEE Talent Support Exam for aspirants of JEE, 2015 (XII studying/pass students), is an All India level assessment exam where students will get to know their projected JEE Ranks on the current level of their preparation. There being still time for the main JEE examination, students will be able to analyze their shortcomings and work on them in a planned way. Some students, who are well prepared, as far as concepts and practice is concerned often fail to successfully implement their preparation during the slotted time of examination. FTSE helps students bridge this gap by giving them a kind of mock test exercise, complete with results and feedback. Along with their scores, students are also offered suggestions and feedback by FIITJEE experts to cover the ground and plug the loopholes in time for the main examination. Once the level of preparedness is realized, further help can be availed by joining FIITJEE’s Intensive Contact Program (ICP) - a programme that provides critical inputs, including time management techniques and revision strategies.
« ADMISSION ALERTS The registration process is simple and students can register for FTSE through online and offline modes. The last date to register for the exam is September 16, 2014 through the paper application mode, while it is September 18 for the online application mode. The result for the examination will be declared on September 30. Registration can be done at a fee of Rs 200. However, no fee will be charged from students who have enrolled for any JEE-2015 program or those who are NTSE scholars, KVPY Stage-I qualified or have qualified any of the stages of Jr. Science Olympiad or Sr. Olympiads (in Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Astronomy) conducted by HBCSE. competitive exams like CAT, JEE, BITSAT, CA-CPT, CS Foundation etc. Most of the major entrance exams are now conducted completely or partly online. Examination authorities find the online medium more attractive due to its high level of transparency, security & administrative efficiency. Online exams involve less paper work for form filling, admit cards, question papers etc. They also reduce overhead costs of logistics, paper checking and generation of the result in physical formats besides the most important advantage of eliminating the chances of human errors. Online exams are also beneficial for students in multiple ways. Registration forms for online exams are much cheaper than offline exam forms and the process is much easier and less time consuming eliminating the need of photocopy & postage and allowing students the convenience of easier payment methods than the cumbersome demand draft. Secondly, in the OMR based entrance exams, 15 to 20 minutes of time is wasted in filling the bubbles in the OMR, online exams are saving students those 15-20 valuable minutes that they can spend on attempting more questions or reviewing their answers. Online examinations also let students mark questions for later review or leave questions unanswered; changing an answer is also easy in online mode, as compared to the time consuming and difficult way in OMR. The biggest advantage for Diploma in Sales Management will prepare students on all the things that a sales professionals needs to be aware of, in a manner that they doesn’t clash with the existing college timetable. The classes will be held during weekday evenings or weekends. Totaling to about 300 hours, of which 120 hours will be devoted to intensive classroom instructions and 180 hours will be allocated to assignments and project-work in the field of sales with a reputed company. Diploma in Banking Management: Six–month Diploma in Banking Management will prepare students on all the things that a banking professional needs to be aware of, in a manner that they doesn’t clash with existing college timetable. For working professionals, TSCFM announces the following programmes: Professional Diploma in Real Estate Management; Professional Diploma in Business Startup; Professional Diploma in Business Growth.
students in online exams is that they can take exams as per their convenience. Online exams are usually conducted over a stretch of time and students are allowed to select their preferred date and time slot along with their choice of exam center. Another benefit is that online exams eliminate the risk of getting surprises or changes in questions and patterns as the organizers usually stay away from any kind of surprise element.
E-learning for test preparation While taking online tests may be preferred by one and all, actually succeeding in these tough competitive exams is another ball game all together. Preparation runs into months and burning the midnight oil just seems like an understatement when it comes to the hard work that students need to put in. Competitive exams such as JEE, AIPMT, CA-CPT, etc require extreme practice and training. In this sphere too, students are increasingly opting for online preparatory courses in addition to attending coaching classes. The online training offers wide scope for students to develop their answering and reasoning skills. It allows them to study at their own pace and within the comfort of their homes. Precious time is saved on travelling and other logistical requirements. Online prep modules offer access to all the comprehensive study material required even at the locations where good physical resources like
coaching institutes are not available. This makes it a level playing field for the small town students who otherwise are deprived of admissions to the prestigious higher learning institutes due to lack of availability of preparatory resources.
National Perspective within your home Even for the urban students, online preparation helps increase their scores by reviewing their preparation, benchmarking it with peers on a national level and taking corrective actions within time. Due to the use of technology, the kind of analysis and tracking that is possible in online learning modes is well nigh impossible in offline modes. Students can connect, compare and collaborate with geographically separated peers using online mediums. Even the most unproductive time like daily travel can be converted into productive learning time by accessing preparation modules on mobile devices. Although it is debatable if online learning can replace classroom system, many experts are of the view that online modes are bringing precision and convenience to learning which in turn brings out the best performance of each student and the cutoffs are increasing considerably. As a conclusion, Online Exams and preparation is here to stay. It may or may not replace classroom learning, but it is surely bringing quality and convenience to education and increasing its reach in terms of geography and precision.
Ryan Group launches Food Bucket Challenge
T
he Ryan Group launched the Ryan Schools Food Bucket Challenge at St Lawrence School, Kandivli recently. The group aims to mobilise over one million kilograms of food (mainly cereals like rice, wheat, jowar and foods like sugar, onions, potatoes etc) and distribute it to various orphanages and NGOs across the country. This is aimed to be a nationwide programme and the group hopes that in addition to its stakeholders – students, parents, staff and others, the general public will also join in to support the needy. The programme is also intended to make their students sensitive to the issues around them and be alive to the situation of the less fortunate. Such activities feature regularly in Ryan schools across the country, as the group strongly focuses on
inculcating the importance of social responsibility amongst the students and the stakeholders helping them develop an attitude of selfless service. The programme was kicked off at the St Lawrence School, Kandivli East by providing a nutritious meal to 500 children from various orphanages. Speaking on the occasion, Grace Pinto, MD, Ryan International Group of Institutions said, “This challenge initiative has been launched to bring awareness that within each lies the potential and the will to bring the change we'd like to see. There is nothing we cannot accomplish if we work collectively to make a difference. Our target is to bring a million smiles. Finding Expression!

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2014
Installation Artist, Farah Mulla (25) infuses sound in visual form and artwork to evoke human emotions, memories and ideas that otherwise get lost in the daily grind. For those who see the world a little differently, and find expression through art and sound, young artist Farah divulges the secrets of this nascent career path. Naressa Coutinho finds out What is Sound Art? Sound art is an artistic discipline in which sound is utilised as a medium. Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art is interdisciplinary in nature, or takes on hybrid forms. It can engage with subjects such as acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, noise music, audio media, found or environmental sound, explorations of the human body, sculpture, film or video and an ever-expanding set of subjects that are part of the current discourse of contemporary art.
« INTERVIEW << Farah Mulla and (left) some of her work of this career option from your experience? One of the major advantages is that it is still a very emergent field and there is a lot to be explored within it. The disadvantage I face is trying to permeate the idea of sound art into the jargon of people who are not well versed with art.
How did you come to choose a career in this particular line of art? Always very curious about sound, I used to make recordings of daily soundscapes on my phone. As time progressed, I began to use them as my own aural logs, something I would go back to when I wanted to evoke a memory or feeling. It wasn’t a surprise to me when I started using sounds in my artwork as I was aware of the potential it had to shape and affect our experiences. Being exposed to John Cage and Philip Glass were turning points in my life. With this I began to understand this very powerful property of sound. I began to contextualise and curate my recordings enabling me to display them as my sound installations. Belonging to a science background gave me a unique grounding while pursuing an MFA in Fine Art. Having a strong hold over a variety of conventional art mediums and technical knowhow were always factors that enabled me to explore the lesser-exploited mediums.
Can Sound Art pay the bills? I don’t have the correct answer for this one as I am still starting out. But artists make good money freelancing depending on the scale of the projects.
the city but you would definitely require a background in classical and contemporary art to gain an understanding and pursue it further. Does a country like ours provide direction and scope for artists in this field? There is a lot of scope for installation artists in India. Not only in art institutions such as galleries and museums but also in the public and business domain. As for sound installation, it is still at a very nascent stage in the international art market and even more so in the Indian market. But the situation is evolving gradually and artists are finding alternate and innovative avenues to exhibit their work.
A word of advice to those with a bone for installation art Just like any creative career path let passion be your sole driving force. It’s timely to recall Picasso’s advice to the famous photographer Brassai about refusing to compromise and to pursue your dreams at any price. "When you have something to say, to express, any submission becomes unbearable in the long run. One must have the courage of one's vocation and the courage to make a living from one's vocation. The 'second career' is an illusion! I was often broke too, and I always resisted any temptation to live any other way than from my painting," said Picasso. Some of her works include: Punctum (Changing Spaces Gallery, Cambridge), Memories of a Place in a Space (Kent: Historical dockyard), Are you Confused Enough?, Simultaneous Performance of Different Interpretations (Ruskin Gallery), The Invisible Exhibition (Fitzwilliam Museum), A Voice in Vision and The Coslettoscope. Group exhibitions include: Mask Factor, (Opera Gallery, Singapore and Bajaj Art Gallery Mumbai), Room 104 (Ruskin Gallery) and In the Expanded Field (Changing Spaces Gallery)
Is this a career that requires a lot of financial What are the advantages and disadvantages investment? Yes, in terms of equipment to facilitate the work. More than anything, like any other creative field, it requires constant updating of LINKS TO HER WORK ON YOUTUBE: Punctum: knowledge, equipment and skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYJHlhQp0dM&list=UUTWmUr3OEGDpxfbVRbgcOrw The Invisible Generation: Are there any courses in India or the city https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCe4C4aLRAY&list=UUTWmUr3OEGDpxfbVRbgcOrw that teach Sound Art? umbaikars live life at the speed of light, but they always manage to squeeze out some time for leisure. These are the places Mumbaikars visit in their early days and some even now. If you’re new here and haven’t yet been to any of these, this is your chance.
Marine Drive: The ‘pride’ of Mumbai. This is the first place that comes to mind when you think of the sea. It is the most inexpensive hangout for youngsters to enjoy their leisure time. Since there are many colleges surrounding Marine Drive, there is a rush of students throughout the day, all through the year. What’s really wonderful about Marine Drive is the 4.3-kmlong stretch with the sea on one side and city landmarks like Brabourne Stadium and Wankhede Stadium on the other. To feed the hungry humans who are enjoying the sea breeze, the Drive has many options from pani puri to sweet corn. The best part of this place is one can sit alone or in a group, for hours and hours, walk, talk or stay quiet, and no one will disturb you.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park (Borivali National park): When you live in Mumbai, you have to think twice before you plan a holiday outside the city. However, within Mumbai, there are multiple options to explore. I remember as a teenager, I always wished to visit the other side of the city. Borivali National Park is the perfect getaway for adventurous spirits. You can enjoy visiting the 2,400-year-old Kanheri caves sculpted out of the rocky cliffs which lie within the park. SGNP is an extensive range, blessed with flora and fauna. It’s the perfect getaway for youngsters if they wish to be close to nature and spot some wildlife around. It is one of the most visited National Parks in Asia.
Prithvi Theatre: One of Mumbai’s oldest theatre groups performs at the Prithvi Theatre and they are a sight to watch. Youth who enjoy theatre gather here to watch plays and enjoy the history of this auditorium that goes back to 1942. Many from this theatre group have flourished. It’s a great place to meet and interact with people who have similar interests. Established by Shashi Kapoor, there is much more to offer than emerging talents. A large variety of options to fill your tummy are also available.
Siddhivinayak Temple/Mount Mary Church/Haji Ali Dargah: We all have a religious side to us, especially before our results, after our exams, for an interview, etc. A large number of college students are spotted here, not because it’s a call to their spiritual awakening, but also because these places are good for discussion. Colaba Causeway: A definite hub for youngsters. The happenings around here never stop. From dirt cheap shopping, food, and beer, it’s the place where youth love to be. What do I mean by adventure? Here it refers to those boat rides which take you around to the boundary of the sea at the Gateway of India. There are famous joints like Leopold’s, Café Mondegar, Bade Miyan. This street is alive and full of tourists. It’s a fun street. Sterling Theatre: Watch a movie, sit, eat, talk it out, all in one place. The Sterling Theatre is the most affordable multiplex in South Mumbai. This
MUMBAI’S OFFERINGS MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2014
There are a whole lot of places that city youngsters frequent when they are looking to unwind. Here’s a look at some of the popular haunts in the city up to work on projects or for official meetings. Starbucks is the place to be for good food and a good crowd. Even if you choose not to sip or dip, you’re most welcome at Starbucks.
UTBT (Under the Banyan Tree) Located at Pedder Road, UTBT is a small open-air restaurant. However, since this place is comparatively small, there is enough place to accommodate a number of teenagers. It serves the yummiest vegetarian snacks. UTBT is always occupied, no matter which hour of the day or night you happen to stop by there. Located right next to Sophia College, this place has a valid reason to keep buzzing. Universal Café: What do you need to have fun? You need to be at Universal Café. Here’s where you can see youngsters enjoying sizzlers and beer. Here’s where you can spend hours unwinding over food and drinks with your friends.
place is buzzing throughout the day with young kids, teenagers and young adults. It’s the perfect place to meet up with the gang. Youngsters sit for hours and hours without any intention to return to reality. It has multiple small joints within the premises that offer affordable food to enjoy. There are no restrictions to enter this place even if you don’t have tickets to watch a movie. Bhiwandi Dhaba: This place is open till 4 am every morning. Every time I visit this place, I think there’s a fair going on. Apparently youngsters come all the way from Gujarat to have dinner here and return home by dawn on the weekends. It serves the most affordable food in the middle of the night. You can sit comfortably on the ‘khatlas’ and eat the sumptuous food made according to your preference. It’s a centre to meet, play, hog and have fun. Who ever goes there has to try their ‘chana lasoon’ to pass their time. There are multiple dhabas in the vicinity, which serve more or less the same items. So if your tummy rumbles in the middle of the night, you know where to go.
Bandra: Bandra is home to the Bandra Bandstand, Carter Road, Bandra Sea-Link and a whole range of other spots. It lies in between town and the suburbs. It is also home to most of Bollywood’s stars and celebrities. Most of the youth found here are either driving around, sipping chai at seaside cafes, shopping or just sitting at Carter Road or Bandra Bandstand. There are some really affordable eateries around this place. Being in Bandra is the thing to do on a boring day. Sitting at Bandra Fort and looking around gives one eternal peace.
Starbucks: The trends in the recent time have changed. Starbucks is a one-stop spot. If you want free Wi-Fi, nice coffee and a lively atmosphere, this is the place to be. It’s the apt place for youngsters to chill out. Many of them meet
candle, his mother gave him, to travel to the place where the star fell. But when he arrives, he discovers that the star is not merely some superficial object, but rather a beautiful woman named Yvaine (Clare Danes) who wears the precious jewel. But to Tristan’s horror, he learns that a trio of witches, led by a delightfully wicked Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) wants to capture Yvaine to cut out her heart and gain eternal youth. Then there are also the seven princes, four of whom have died, and the remaining three of the recently deceased King of Stormhold (Peter O'Toole) who are
out to find the gem, as the bearer of the jewel will be the new king. Tristan who hails from the sleepy English village of Wall, so named for the stone barrier that separates it from the magical realm of Stormhold, has to win his new love one way or other. Tristan and Yvaine have to pass through a whirlwind journey facing witches, pirates, and kings-tobe, so that their love is not destroyed. Good visual effects, add to making this adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name, a delight to watch. Bonus features include making of the movie. — Verus Ferreira

Indian Consumer Confidence Dips In August
ZyFin Research’s Consumer Outlook Index data for August 2014 indicates that consumer confidence has waned marginally for the second consecutive month. Although it is too early to term this a trend, it does signal that the euphoria prompted by the formation of the new government is starting to weaken, as consumers sense no major shift in economic conditions. This decline is primarily due to weakening in sentiment toward job security and willingness to spend on big-ticket items.

ank credit during the period April – July has grown at a lower rate of 1.3% in 2014 relative to that in 2013. Growth has been higher in case of agriculture; however industry and services have experienced negative growth. The negative growth in industrial credit comes despite 3.9% growth in IIP between April – June 2014. According to Care Ratings “With growth in credit being subdued it does indicate that the more positive numbers witnessed in industrial output should be interpreted with caution. Also the fact that retail credit is the relatively faster growing sector is indicative that investment too has been subdued notwith-
standing the fact that the capital formation rate for Q1-FY15 appeared stable. Agriculture credit grew by 7.6% in April – July FY15 as against 2.2% in April – July FY14. Negative growth in industrial credit was mainly attributed to the large segment where growth in credit declined by 0.9%. In the Micro & Small and medium segment borrowing increased marginally by 0.7% and 0.4% respectively. As ECBs reckoned during this period were higher at $ 10.25 bn (automatic and approval routes), it may be surmised that the larger companies preferred this route. As regards the Services sector, it witnessed a negative growth of 1.5% as against a 1.9% growth in the corresponding period last year. Most of
the negative growth came from other services (-5.6%), wholesale trade (-3.4%)and transport (-1.4%). NBFCs also posted a decline in credit by 0.4%. However, retail trade (4.7%) and commercial real estate (2.5%) posted positive growth in credit. In the personal loans segment, vehicle loan witnessed an increase. Given that large part of the auto industry sales is driven by bank credit, this higher growth number could be indicative of pick up of growth in this segment. Credit card loans, though not very significant in the overall credit, has also witnessed a significant increase. Housing and Education witnessed slower growth while consumer durables remained at the same level of growth.
Gas Price Of Over $6.5 Key To Monetisation Of RIL Discoveries By A Business Reporter
A
gas price of over USD 6.5 per million British thermal unit is a prerequisite for early monetisation of discoveries made by Reliance Industries, says Deutsche Bank. A four-member panel of secretaries is likely to submit its report on a new gas pricing mechanism to the government by today. The committee was formed as the Rangarajan price formula, which would have doubled the gas price to USD 8.4, was found unacceptable to the government. "Our channel checks indicate that a gas price over USD 6.5 per mmBtu is necessary to enable monetisation of RIL's deep-water discoveries," Deutsche Bank Market Research said
in a note. It expected RIL to focus on development of R-series and satellite gas discoveries in the eastern offshore KG-D6 block as well as coalbed methane (CBM) block in Madhya Pradesh and discoveries in NEC-25 block once clarity emerges on gas price. "Every USD1 per mmBtu hike in domestic natural gas price raises RIL's FY16 EPS by 2%," it said. RIL stock has underperformed the BSE Sensex by 15% over the past three months as the gas price hike was deferred and regional refining margins collapsed from over USD 6 per barrel in May to close to USD 3 in August. "We expect the government's announcement of a gas price hike by October 2014 and a bounce back in refining margins (GRMs) from recent
lows to be near-term catalysts for RIL," it said. Commissioning of expanded capacities in petrochemicals and refining will drive RIL's earnings growth and valuations in FY16 and FY17. "We estimate RIL's FY14-17 EBITDA at 24% driven by capacity expansions," it said. Over the past month, regional refining margins have strengthened to over USD 5 per barrel from close to USD 3 in August. "Higher capacity shutdowns and winter demand should help Asian and hence RIL's refining margins to bounce back from recent lows," it said.
ssets under management (AUM) of mutual funds rose to a new high of Rs 10.13 trillion in August, edging ahead of May’s Rs 10.11 trillion peak, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). Month-on-month, industry AUM rose 0.63%, or Rs 63.72 billion, from Rs 10.06 trillion in July, driven by equity mutual funds, reveals a Crisil research report. Equity mutual fund assets soared 6.01% to Rs 2.67 trillion in August steered by both inflows and mark-to-market (MTM) gains. With the rally in equities stoking interest, the category clocked inflows for the fourth straight month at Rs 53.64 bn. To be sure, that’s lesser than the Rs 108.45 bn seen in July, but consolidated inflows since the beginning of 2014 now stand at Rs 242.98 bn. The CNX Nifty Index, which is the underlying asset class for this category of mutual funds, gained 3.02% in August on positive domestic and international cues. Similarly, the equity rally also helped balanced funds (hybrids that invest mostly in equity and a smaller portion in debt) crank up AUM for the fourth straight month. Assets rose 6.64%, or by Rs 10.76 bn to Rs 172.93 bn, on the back of inflows of Rs 4.48 bn – the highest since January 2008 – and MTM gains. The category’s standard benchmark, represented by CRISIL Balanced Fund, Index edged up 2.13% in the month. Assets under management at exchange traded funds (ETFs) also ascended, reaching Rs 52.39 bn, or up 3.07%, owing to inflows and MTM gains amid increasing ap-
petite for equity-oriented funds. Conversely, just like in July, August also saw heavy redemptions from income funds. Sentiment for the category dampened after the Union Budget on July 10, when the long-term capital gains tax on debt-oriented mutual funds was doubled to 20% and the definition of 'long term investment' was tripled to 36 months. Here’s how outflows panned out in August: closed-end income funds -mostly fixed maturity plans - saw Rs 85.57 bn vs Rs 49.26 bn in July move out, open-end income funds Rs 37.91 bn vs. Rs 42.30 bn and interval funds by Rs 3.48 bn vs Rs 9.24 bn. On a consolidated basis, income funds posted outflows of Rs 126.96 bn – the highest since December 2011 – resulting in a fall of 2.23% or Rs 105.37 bn in AUM to Rs 4.61 trillion. MTM gains in the underlying assets saved further blushes. AUMs of liquid funds hemorrhaged by outflows of Rs 58.64 bn, capping asset gains in the industry. The category, however, managed to rise marginally by 0.33% or Rs 8.15 bn to Rs 2.45 trillion due to MTM gains. AUMs of gilt funds fell 3.45% or Rs 1.95 bn to Rs 54.50 bn, in August due to outflows of Rs 2.09 bn, more than reversing the inflows of Rs 1.10 bn in July. Total outflows in the category since the start of 2014 now stands at Rs 24.50 bn. Gold ETFs also continued to witness outflows (Rs 1.12 bn) for the 15th straight month with AUM falling 1.44%, or Rs 1.12 bn, to Rs 76.61 bn with the underlying yellow metal shedding sheen for investors. The price of gold (represented by the CRISIL Gold Index) fell 0.10% in August.

USUAL SUSPECT ICC suspends Ajmal for illegal action, PCB to appeal
ZIMONJIC’S PRESENCE ASSURING Indian Davis Cup Captain Anand Amritraj, coach Zeeshan Ali and players Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman at Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association ground ahead of their World Group play off tie against Serbia in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
FOR YOUNG SERBIAN PLAYERS
B
ANGALORE: Serbia's young singles players Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic today said the presence of Nenad Zimonjic was assuring for them as the doubles legend has always guided them well in handling tough Davis Cup conditions. Lajovic and Krajinovic are betterranked players than the Indians as they prepare to take on Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri on the opening day of the play-off tie on Friday. "For us it is very important to have someone like Zimon. We learnt from him how to adjust to different situations, help us tide over difficult situations. It's good to be part of a team that has Zimonjic," Lajovic, who is the highest-ranked player in the tie at number 61, said. The 107th-ranked Krajinovic admitted that conditions were demanding in Bangalore. "It is not easy
to play in high altitude, but we came here six days before and it has helped. We have been preparing and will be ready for the tie," he said. Zimonjic is the senior-most player in the Serbian side in the absence of world number one Novak Djokovic. Captain Bogdan Obradovic also posed confidence in Lajovic and Krajinovic, saying they had enough fire and motivation to propel the side to the World Group. "If you do not have experience, then you have fire and motivation, and these two youngsters have it in them to propel the team for a victory," Obradovic told reporters after the practice session at KSLTA Stadium here. Obradovic said it is up to them to utilise the opportunity and give their best at a big stage. "It is up to them to know how much they can give, it is a big tournament. The youngsters have an opportunity to
improve under such situation. It is going to be exciting for us and expect to play good tennis," he added. Asked to react on Somdev Devvarman's comment that India have an edge in the doubles, Obradovic said his doubles players too are quite strong. "Doubles event is crucial for both the teams. However, our doubles players had beaten Bryan Brothers in the past, which means we are ready for beating any team," he said. "Still our doubles players have to play and score points, but our players are confident. We are going to be ready for it, but we have to respect the Indian team because they had so many great teams wherein the likes of (Mahesh) Bhupathi and Leander (Paes) in the past," he added. Devvarman had said yesterday that doubles point was India's best chance and winning a point on the first day, can make things interesting.

UBAI/KARACHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended world's number one ODI bowler Saeed Ajmal for an illegal bowling action, a decision which the Pakistan Cricket Board intends to challenge. "The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent analysis has found the bowling action of Pakistan's offspinner Saeed Ajmal to be illegal and, as such, the player has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement. The analysis of the 36-year-old spinner's action revealed that all his
deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations. "Saeed, who was reported after the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle last month, can apply a re-assessment after he has modified his bowling action in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions," the ICC statement read. The analysis was performed on August 25 by the ICC's accredited team of Human Movement Specialists at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. Reported to match referee Andy Pycroft by on-field umpires Ben Oxenford and Ian Gould, Ajmal played the second match only to see his team lose the game and the series. "It is disappointing to learn the result of the biomechanic test in Brisbane but I have not given up. I don't see the ban as a major problem as I know I can work out on the flaws and make a comeback," Ajmal said from Faisalabad. “I want to play in the World Cup and see my country doing well and I will do whatever it takes to be ready for the tournament. I am a fighter and I know what I have to do to get back into international cricket before the World Cup," he added. A stung PCB said it would appeal against the ICC's decision. "The ban on Ajmal is a big blow to Pakistan cricket and we will appeal against the decision," PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan said. "We don't know the exact details but Saeed has the option of also working on his action and taking fresh tests when he is ready," Khan said. "What we know is that the ICC has recently changed its protocol on testing bowlers with suspect actions and other bowlers have also been reported. We could appeal in two weeks time," he noted.

Shastri backs Fletcher, calls him strong character L
ONDON: His report will decide Duncan Fletcher's future as India's cricket coach and Ravi Shastri, who served as Team Director during the just-concluded limited overs series against England, has put his weight behind the under-fire Zimbabwean by calling him a "solid character". Speaking to 'ESPNCricinfo', Shastri
lavished praise on Fletcher, who is under the scanner after a mixed tour of England during which the Indians were thrashed in the Test series before bouncing back to win the ODIs. "He is tremendous. He would have done over a 100 Tests as coach, which is massive. He is technically very sound. He is a solid character. He is respected. He is a fatherly figure," Shastri
said. "I knew Fletcher from the 1983 World Cup. Then in 1984 I led an India Under-25 side to Zimbabwe, where he was my counterpart. So I was aware of his leadership qualities already.: Also what made Fletcher's job easier was having the trio of Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar as his assistant coaches," he added.

Marin Cilic of Croatia reacts after defeating Kei Nishikori of Japan in the championship match of the 2014 U.S. Open on Monday in New York.
Marin Cilic routs Nishikori
N
EW YORK: Marin Cilic clinched his first Grand Slam title, shattering Kei Nishikori's bid to become the first Asian man to win a major with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory in the US Open final. Cilic, the 14th-seeded 25year-old, became the first Croatian man to win a major since Goran Ivanisevic, now his coach, at Wimbledon in 2001. It also comes 12 months after he was forced to skip the tournament to serve out a controversial doping ban. Cilic, playing in his 28th Grand Slam event, is the lowest-ranked champion since Pete Sampras, then 17th in the world, claimed the 2002 title in New York. But victory was well-deserved with Cilic saving eight of nine break points, firing 17 aces and 38 winners past a weary-looking Nishikori who had defeated three top five players to make his maiden major final -Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and world number one Novak Djokovic. Monday's final was the first at a major not to feature either Djokovic, Federer or Rafael Nadal since the 2005 Australian Open -- so long ago that it was pre-Twitter. "This is all hard work in these last several years and especially this last year," said Cilic. "My
Everything I was working for and dreaming came today and I feel for all the other players that are working hard, I think this is a big sign, a big hope that if you are working hard things are going to pay off.

team has brought something special to me, especially Goran, we were working really hard but the most important thing he brought to me was enjoying tennis and always having fun. I enjoyed my best tennis over here and played the best ever in my life." Under overcast skies and on the coolest day of a twoweek tournament marked by punishing heat and high humidity, the championship match began inside a half-full Arthur Ashe Stadium. Once he had saved a break point in the first game, Cilic was comfortably the dominant player breaking for 4-2 and claiming the opening set in 33 low-key minutes when Nishikori, on the defensive and pinned behind the baseline, patted a meek backhand into the net. The big Croat's 11 winners to the Japanese's two illustrated the one-sided nature of the contest. The winner of 20 of the previous 21 men's finals in New York had claimed the first set. However, Nishikori had dropped the opener to both Raonic and Wawrinka in the fourth round and quarter-finals but
still came out on top.
NERVES AND CHANCES BROKEN Nishikori had his chances with nine break chances but could convert just one while Cilic was five of 11 and enjoyed a 38-19 edge in winners. "It's a really tough loss but I’m really happy coming to my first final," said Nishikori, who appeared to run out of gas after beating three consecutive top-10 opponents and having to endure a pair of five-setters. "Sorry I couldn’t get a trophy today but for sure next time. It was a really fun two weeks here. I hope I can be coming back next year." The only nerves Cilic would show came when he double faulted on his first match point. But it was only a momentary lapse as he buckled down and finished off a reeling Nishikori with a backhard winner before letting out a mighty scream as he fell onto his back and raised his arms in celebration."You never know when the nerves are going to kick in," said Cilic, who returned to competition last October after a four-month ban.
