he budget presented to parliament yesterday by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has some bold initiatives for growth of economy and building of infrastructure but has nothing much for the poor. The biggest allocation is for Defence (2,29,000 crore) and for Infrastructure (2,50,000 crore). Taxation remains unchanged, but its limit for those who earn Rs. 1.50 lakh or 2.50 lakh per year has been increased by Rs.50,000. The Defence gets the largest chunk of money, Rs.2,29,000 crore and infrastructure 2,50,000 lakh crore. A 49 per cent share is offered for FDI.

AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2014
Set against a challenging economic backdrop, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented an encouraging budget, balancing the need for fiscal restraint while supporting domestic growth engines. That's the consensus amongst India's corporate leaders...
The Budget emphasizes on a bottom-ups approach to reignite growth. Allowing banks to issue long term bonds without recourse to statutory preemption (CRR/SLR) for financing infrastructure is a positive step. Allowing infrastructure loans to be given for longer periods matching the life of the asset (25X4 structure) is a big positive. It will prevent undue stress in repayment of infrastructure loans and will also reduce user charges. Bank consolidation in a time bound manner is a welcome move. The Budget will see an increase in the flow of bank credit for a wide range of sectors including retail, infrastructure, MSME, agriculture, manufacturing and exports. Setting up a fund for providing equity to MSME sector is a positive as also revising the definition of MSME. Setting up of 6 more DRTs is expected to help banks in recovering dues particularly when asset quality is the number one priority of banks. Increasing the limits on section 80C from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh will also provide a boost to financial savings. — Arundhati Bhattacharya State Bank Of India Chairperson The Finance Minister's maiden budget signals, both in sentiment and policy, the new government's intention to drive the next generation of reforms and swiftly put India on a higher GDP growth path.It has

provided key sectors like agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure with impetus and incentives to pursue growth. It has spelt out its commitment to public-private partnerships to drive investment and encouraged retail savers to invest more in debt and equity. The FM has also acted positively to further develop quality higher education and encourage skill development programs. For the IT sector, the budget has provided clarity on some long-pending issues in transfer pricing and offered a collaborative framework to minimise future disputes. Above all, the government has strongly signalled that we will see lot more reforms across sectors shortly. This is a positive start to a long term process. — N. Chandrasekaran CEO & MD, Tata Consultancy Services Given the constraints that the government was facing, the budget was as we expected with good news coming in for the Infrastructure sector, more importantly the power and roads segment. The increase in disposable income and the incentive for savings is a positive. Job creation and skill development seemed to be the underlying principles behind a lot of the moves and manufacturing will see some traction on the back of the proposals in the Budget. Perhaps the best indicator of the intention of the Government and the fact that Fiscal Prudence will be seen in the days to come was that the government intends to meet the fiscal deficit to GDP target of 4.1 percent in FY15. A lower disinvestment target might allow for some breathing room for the private sector in what is expected to be a crowded fund raising season. — D.C. Jain MD & CEO, IDBI Capital The first budget from the new government is optimistic and pragmatic and addresses the two challenges facing the country, viz., controlling inflation and providing a boost to manufacturing. It has provided a broad framework for reforms in the most-needed segments of the economy. The FM has given a thrust to the industrial sector by taking various steps like liberalization of ADR and GDR rules, single KYC requirement in capital sector, investment allowance for capital investment in plant & machinery, etc. Revival of capital markets will give a fresh lease of life
to many business enterprises across the country and kick-start the industrial sector. The FM’s measures to expand banking facilities to empower weaker sections are a move to encourage inclusive growth in the country. The proposal to permit public sector banks to sell shares to retail investors, in order to raise funds is welcome. — M.S. Raghavan CMD, IDBI Bank One thing that stands out is the tax concessions for the middle-class that will mean more surplus funds in the hands of investors that can be channelized towards financial savings. The budget also does an admirable job of balancing the need for fiscal consolidation while providing impetus for sectors like infrastructure and manufacturing. There is an attempt to improve the business climate by streamlining procedures, which should encourage investments. It also gives a sense of the long term direction on issues such as GST, DTC etc. — Nimesh Shah MD & CEO, ICICI Prudential AMC The move to allow public sector banks to offload shares will help a long way in getting capitalized which will better prepare them for Basel III. The FM has also spoken of reviving the corporate bond market which combined with the incentive provided to banks to raise long term funds for infra projects with fewer encumbrances will provide support to this development. — D.R. Dogra MD & CEO,CARE Ratings The present government has started with a very strong commitment to develop a robust and sustainable skilling ecosystem with the Prime Minister’s vision for building India on the 'Skill, Scale and Speed' plank. As a clear reiteration of this commitment, the Finance Minister in his Union Budget speech today, has also provided this government’s full support to build the Skill India Mission and the announcement of National Multi-Skill Mission. How this unfolds in the coming months is something we need to wait and watch. After skilling over 2 million
people over the last five years, National Skill Development Corporation is fully geared to accept any challenge that the government may expect us to take on in the skilling space. — Dilip Chenoy MD and CEO, National Skill Development Corporation The finance minister in his maiden budget speech spreads cheers to the consumer durable and home appliances sector. Not only the budget aims to encourage manufacturing the sector. He has also encouraged the TV Manufacturing in the country by reducing the import duties on Smaller Sizes of LCD/LED Panels & Color Picture Tubes to z, which was earlier 10%. Also, the basic custom duty on LCD/LED panel below 19 inch has also been removed. The provisions will also allow the customer to pay less on lower size LCD/LED & CRT TV sets. The minister has taken steps to boost domestic production of electronic items and reduce our dependence on imports. The import duty on inputs for making LCD/LED Panels have also been exempted from Custom duty. It will encourage greater Value Addition in the manufacturing of LCD/LED TVs in the country. — Anirudh Dhoot President, ,CEAMA, and Director, Videocon
Most sectors received support in today’s budget, with FDI ceilings in insurance and defense raised along expectations. The households received a hand by modest increase in the basic tax slab and higher exemption limit on financial savings. Extension and expansion of investment allowances for SMEs and manufacturing sector was positive. Funding towards infrastructure sector found support from the decision that banks will be allowed to raise long-term funds, without the need to maintain proportional SLR, CRR and PSL. Financial sector liberalization and sops also buoyed the markets. — Radhika Rao Economist, DBS Bank The Union Budget 2014-2015 is progrowth, investor-friendly and savings oriented. The increase in basic tax exemption limit coupled with
increase under Section 80C aims to leave Rs 1 lac of disposable income in the hands of tax payers. This should result in providing a boost to small savings. The budget encourages long term infrastructure lending by proposing exemptions under CRR/SLR. And the classification with regard to capital gains will attract larger participation of FIIs in Indian markets. Technology gets a boost with the new TDF. Gross borrowing program by the Government of India has been nearly pegged at the same level. This should provide comfort on both liquidity and interest rates. The emphasis to focus on bringing down inflation while proposing growth centric measures will be positively received by broader markets. — Rakesh Sharma MD & CEO, Lakshmi Vilas Bank The Union Budget 2014-15 has failed to meet the expectations of the industry. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has lost a golden opportunity of reviving the prospects of the Indian economy succumbing to decadel low GDP growth, inflation, crowding out of private investments and rising deficit bill... Jaitley has been courageous in providing multiple sops, tax holidays and striking measures in reviving the manufacturing sector of the Indian economy. However, it fails to escape the eyes of the industry that the measures had been already initiated by respective ministries in the past. Also, the Budget stipulates no time frame for the measures announced towards boosting the infrastructural sector and manufacturing industry of the economy. It is imperative to note that time bound measures are crucial for the Indian economy which realms under the pressure of policy not witnessing timely execution. — Vijay Kalantri President, All India Association of Industries
Through this budget the Finance Minister has set the ground for repair of the economy. There has been a mix of both short term and long term measures geared towards boosting confidence of all key constituents... He presented the budget in a very difficult situation and what we have is a set of progressive announcements that will be the key building blocks for engineering a turnaround in the growth trajectory over the next two to three years. — Sidharth Birla President, FICCI

The Government’s endeavour of providing ‘housing for all by 2022’ through new measures announced in today’s Budget, such as allocation of funds for National Housing Bank, setting up a Mission on Low Cost Affordable Housing, inclusion of slum development in the list of CSR activities, would help in promoting development of affordable housing in the country. Extending additional tax incentives by increasing the interest deduction to Rs.2 lacs would help more people, especially the young working class population; to buy homes and this could trigger renewed interest in the real estate market. — Brotin Banerjee MD & CEO, Tata Housing
awarding an infrastructure status to enhancement of investment limit will the real estate sector” provide a boost. — Pradeep Jain — Subhrakant Panda Chairman – Parsvnath Developers MD, Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd.
The Finance Minister has taken a cautious approach but has shown the intent to take the right steps. The heartening aspect is that he has not gone overboard on any proposal. That he has laid emphasis on developing the housing sector is an encouraging move. We welcome the Finance Minister’s recommendations towards promoting home-buying amongst India’s common man. It is helpful that the income tax deduction for interest on housing loans has been raised to Rs 200 thousand (though not the expected Rs 300 thousand). Rs 40 billion for affordable housing and extending incentives for housing loans will help the housing industry in India in a big way. This is significant considering that India suffers a huge housing shortage of close to 63 million units. — Kapil Wadhawan Chairman & MD, DHFL
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has stuck a fine The new balance between Government has offering just the provided a right incentives to balanced, various sectors to insightful budget revive growth & job which clearly lays creation one hand out a road map for and his math on development. The fiscal deficit on the other. By sticking commitment to a to a fiscal deficit target of 4.1%, he stable and investor has taken the bull by its horns and friendly tax regime, resolving hopefully, the government will adhere disputes and blocked projects and to that number. The budget is various measures to simplify rules inclusive with a strong welfare focus and regulations will give great but has stayed away from any confidence to investors and providers populist measures and rightly so. Reaffirmation — David Walker that the new licensing regime for Executive Director, SARE Homes banks will be announced - is good and along expected lines. The tweak in personal tax exemptions is an I think Mr Jaitley encouraging move. However, one has presented a would have liked to see more clarity realistic budget around GST. We hail the maiden budget speech by Hon Finance Minister, Arun Jaitly, this clearly suggest that development flank taken by the NDA govt. Real Estate sector for long time was ignored with no significant proposals made to spur growth in this sector. For the first time after the slowdown the Union Budget 2014 gives a boost to the real estate sector. We thank Hon’ble Minister for paying attention through legislations like REIT, promoting affordable housing and allocating over USD 50,000 crores towards urban infrastructure. Government’s emphasis on PPP shows its commitment towards a collective growth. Though we have moved ahead in the right direction, a lot more has to be done, primarily
Under the current tight fiscal situation, the Finance Minister has tried to balance and manage the expectations from different quarters with a need for growth and fiscal prudence. The budget has rightly given a positive direction on issues like implementation of GST, retrospective taxation as well as simplification of the tax regime. This will revive investor sentiment and kick start growth and development in the medium to long term. — Vikram Kirloskar President, SIAM & Vice Chairman Toyota Kirloskar
The Finance minister has rightly focussed on the MSME sector and provided much needed impetus to it by providing various friendly framework with focus on reviving the sector. The government's first budget seeks to draw a road map to address various issues which will not only stimulate the economy, but also will be the foundation stone for setting it on the high growth path in the coming years. — Umesh Revankar MD, Shriram Transport Finance Company
encouragement to banks for giving long-term funds and loans to the infrastructure sector is bound to give a boost to the ailing sector. The allocation of Rs 500 crore for Deen Dayal Upadhyay rural electrification programme clearly indicates Government’s inclination towards strengthening infrastructure development which shines brightly with their claim of supplying 24x7 power supply to the nation. — Ratul Puri Chairman, Hindustan Powerprojects Giving pass-through status to REIT and CSR status for Slum Redevelopment Programmes are major welcome announcements by the finance minister...We have been suggesting to the government for long to help revive the real estate sector to rejuvenate the economy and we definitely hope to see a radical change coming to the state. The minister has given some relief to individual tax payers by raising the income tax exemption limit by 50,000 and has also raised the limit of the interest part of home loans from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh. The combined effect will definitely lead to renewed interest in home purchase by Indians...Yet, we see the glass half full and the remaining half is filled with hope... — Lalit Kumar Jain Chairman,CREDAI We are extremely delighted after today budget speech by Shri Arun Jaitley. Real estate has finally got its long pending attention in the Union Budget. We sincerely applaud the decisions made to boost this sector. We, however, were expecting to get an infrastructure status in the budget. This would have allowed the sector reap some more benefits in terms of funding. This remain unfulfilled. Overall, this is a welcome budget by the Union Government and certainly promises Acchhe Din ahead.” — Aman Agarwal Director – K V Developers The focus is clearly to cap less productive expenditure on various subsidies and use the incremental governmental revenues for boosting infrastructure and consumption growth. From an stock market perspective his throws up an opportunity for investors to look at infrastructure, banking, real estate and capital goods sectors. The FM has mentioned that the capitalization

of banks to meet Basel 3 norms would be done through funds raised by divesting Government’s large holding in PSU banks to the investing public. Add to this, the disinvestment target of Rs 63,000 crore is certain to keep the Indian capital markets buzzing and provide excellent buying opportunities for the retail investor. The increase in income tax exemption limit under section 80C from Rs 100,000 to Rs 150,000 and raising the threshold of taxable income to Rs 250,000 will boost retail savings and consumption. — C. Parthasarathy Chairman Karvy Group I am really happy with 2014 union budget as per healthcare sector is concerned. The sector is the growth engine for any developing country. With our Finance Minister proposing 4 new All India Institute Of Medical Sciences in the near future and also he proposes to be built and function All India Institute Medical College in every state of India , proposing of Rs. 100 crore for Beti Bacchao campaign, opening of 12 more government medical colleges, 31 new Laboratory for testing new drugs and ensuring its safety and 15 new rural health research centers, there will be a boost for the health sector. — Dr K.K. Aggarwal President Indian Medical Association Overall, this was a good budget and will stimulate growth in the real estate and infrastructure sector. However, the real impact on the economy will be upon investing all the funds allocated in the Budget through project implementations, with a sense of urgency for which our country does not have a good track record. — Anshuman Magazine Chairman & MD, CBRE South Asia This biggest positive from this budget is the emphasis the government has accorded to infrastructure creation. Keeping in mind the fiscal constraints, the Hon’ble Finance Minister has very intelligently calibrated his maiden Budget to promote growth and employment without sacrificing prudence. This budget has set up a very positive trend to the economy after a long time. Strengthening the systems for Advance Tax Ruling will substantially reduce tax litigations and ambiguities. This should be also extended to domestic companies. — Hemant Kanoria Chairman & MD Srei Infrastructure Finance Ltd

ne hundred crore rupees has been allocated to construct a war memorial in New Delhi, in the Union Budget 2014-15, but the need to restore IMS Vikrant, a celebrated warship lying limp in a ship breaking yard, has been ignored. The former warship which played an important role in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1972 was sent to Darukhana last month. Before the elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena Members of Parliament (MP) had carried out a morcha against the
Centre's decision to scrap the former warship. The alliance leaders had promised to restore the ship and make it a public museum if they were voted to power. However, the budget presented by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely held no reference to IMS Vikrant. Jaitely announced Rs.100 crore to build a war memorial at Prince Park, New Delhi. Jaitley said that the country is deeply indebted to the officers and the jawans of the armed forces for having made huge sacrifices to defend its honour. In doing so, a large number of them gave up their lives. He said, “It is a
privilege for the nation to erect a befitting memorial in their memory.” BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, who was also part of the protest, remained tight lipped on the issue. Sena MP Rahul Shewale said, over the phone, “We have not given up on the issue. The matter is sub judice. We had requested Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari to make budget provision for IMS Vikrant.” So the matter is sub judice and is pending verdict in the Supreme Court, while a contractor lies in wait, hoping to wreck the ship as soon as the verdict is out.

n a bid to curb pilferage, theft and ensure better transparency in water tanker services, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to install Global Positioning System (GPS) devices on privately hired water carriers. The water supply department has deployed four private contractors for hiring 10,000 liter carriers to transport water from the tanker filling point in Bhayandar to various destinations across the twin-city. While the MBMC charges Rs 600 per tanker from the end user, the private tanker gets Rs 475 per trip. As per official statistics, the water supply department registers an average of 130 trips per day. However, there have been allegations that private contractors who are hand-in-glove with the tanker mafia had been inflating the number of trips on the virtue of manipulated physical monitoring. Known to be a trusted lieutenant of local Congress strongman and MLC, Muzaffar Hussain, Sawant had openly raised a banner of revolt against NCP nominee Dr. Sanjeev Naik in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. Sawant who had led a team of disgruntled Congress leaders, mostly former corporators against Naik’s candidature had even tendered his resignation in protest. Sawant’s mysterious reinduction into the party fold and dramatic elevation

Thanking his mentorMuzaffar Hussain and the state leadership for giving him an opportunity to lead the party unit, Sawant said, “ I will not only strive for the well being of the common citizens, but will also ensure that the base of the party is further strengthened in this region.” Sawant succeeds outgoing president Leo Collasso. Budget: Main focus on middle class T
F
inance Minister Arun Jaitley's budget which was presented by him to Parliament yesterday has nothing much for the poor. The corporate, middle and lower classes got better attention: The taxable limit of those whose annual earning is Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh has been increased by Rs. 50,000. Small industrial units get assistance. Several import items – computers and TV, branded packaged foods, footwear, branded clothes will be cheaper following a reduction in excise duties. The government has given huge importance to provide for proper sanitation and clean toilets throughout the country. The finance minister has also announced as much as 49 per cent FDI in Defence. He has provided as much as Rs 2,037 crore to clean up the Ganga. It is to be seen whether the money will sink down the Ganga; the previous attempt by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was a big failure. As much as Rs 400 crore was wasted as a futile attempt was made to clean up the Ganga. Among the infrastructure plans of the government is the construction of highways and roads at a cost of Rs 37,000 crore. The government expects funds for this and other infrastructure items will come from FDI. Congress party leaders were prompt in criticising the budget. “The BJP has copied all our programmes,” they said. What then are they complaining about? At least in the next budget, the poor will get a little more attention from the finance minister. What, however, becomes apparent is he is set on a development course and he is making efforts to deliver. Finally, Sardar Patel was a great leader, but must there be an allocation in the budget of Rs 200 crore to build a statue in his memory?

HESE days one hears nothing but praise for Narendra Modi and, of course, with full justification. His recent visit to Bhutan has received media commendation to a remarkable degree. If Modi had decided to make Bhutan his first foreign destination because of some inner compulsion, that was all for the better. "The visit," said Hindustan Times (June 17), "had the requisite combination of symbolism, pomp, high-minded rhetoric and a measure of substance that will satisfy both sides." Continuing, it said: “Bhutan has always been important to India because New Delhi has both material aspirations and strategic anxieties conquering the kingdom". Referring in many ways to Bhutan's importance — especially in the matter of hydro power co-operation — the paper said "Mr. Modi has done the right thing by signalling to all that he intends to nurture relations with small neighbours." In conclusion it said, "He should now ensure that his bureaucracy will be as sensitive to them as he hopes to be."

loyed alloy in the region" and if Modi wishes to "initiate the turnaround in regional ties, that is important for the promised Indian resurgence, starting with low-hanging fruit is a good opening move". According to The Times of India (June 17), "There is a significant shift under way in India's foreign policy strategy with right from Day One, the Narendra Modi government making it clear the importance it attached to relations with neighbouring countries. In this regard, said the paper, Modi's two-day visit to Bhutan — his first official foreign trip since assuming office — underscores his administration's commitment to India's neighbours. Recalling that Bhutan had a rough patch with the UPA government, the paper said that, Modi's visit at this juncture "should dispel any friction and ameliorate ties."
India’s commitment The Telegraph (June 17) noting that both countries had "gone through a rough patch in recent years," suggested that "Mr. Modi's visit may help heal some wounds and re-assure the Bhutanese of India's commitment to the kingdom's peace, security and economic progress. More important," said the paper, "if India earns the confidence of countries in its backyard, it will be do a lot of good to the new government's image elsewhere in the world." Saying that "the success of his (Modi's) neighbourhood policy would stand out in sharp contrast to Beijing's worsening relations with countries like Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines." The paper added, "The short trip to Bhutan shows he is on the right track." Referring to Indo-Bhutanese relations in the past that have not much to commend, the DNA (June 17) said, "Diplomatic generosity, not high-handedness is the way to deal with Bhutan." The paper recalled that "one of the reasons the SAARC has remained a punchline has been Delhi's boorishness in engaging its neighbours. Therefore, urged the paper, "If Bhutan is to be the first step in Delhi's regional outreach, it is the perfect place to demonstrate this." The paper said Bhutan is India's "only unal-
MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath The paper said "greater regional cooperation is imperative to unfetter the engines of economic growth and create mutually beneficial opportunities throughout South Asia." In conclusion, the paper said giving primacy to the region inverts the earlier logic of fixating on Big Powers by seeking to raise India's international profile through a strong regional foundation, which is a better way of going about it". The Asian Age (June 18) said, "Clearly, while Bhutan is our smallest neighbour, it is a very important one" and Mr. Modi's visit to it "can be seen as a stock-taking and consolidation exercise rolled into one." The paper pointed out that Bhutan is one south Asian country with which India has had trouble-free bilateral times and "a deep-going relationship that has not attracted the ire of another neighbour.” The paper also said, "Substantially up-
grading ties with Bhutan, for which India is the biggest investor trade partner and infrastructure builder depends on this country alone, not on extraneous factors." In conclusion, the paper said that Mr. Modi's B4B (Bharat for Bhutan, Bhutan for Bharat) will remain empty rhetoric if not backed up with action." Meanwhile, another issue of some relevance has cropped up, the refusal of UPA-appointed governors to resign now that a new government has come to power.
The controversy The Economic Times (June 19) thinks that "it would be graceful for the incumbent governors to exit or on their own, without waiting for the President to convey express disapproval." The controversy, according to the paper, "is not all that difficult to solve" considering that governors are "part of the political apparatus of governance." Governors, said the paper are "not like judges, administrative service officers or drivers" and "hold office at the pleasure of the President of India." As the paper put it: "The President acts on the advice of the Council of Ministers" hinting that if the Council wants governors to resign, they should do so. The paper said: "Equally, it would be graceful for the government to let some governors whose term is about to expire in the near future" to stay on and complete their tenure. The New Indian Express (June 20) said with a change in the regime, all governors "should quit on their own, honourably, if the are not in sync with the new political dispensation that has been voted to power." The paper said that "it is a settled convention in the Westminster mode of democracies which India practices that all political appointees of the previous government go with the change of guard on the grounds of political propriety." The Hindustan Times (June 20) said the Modi government "must strive not to repeat the mistakes of the Congress in this regard" and "the post of governor must be taken off the roster of spoils that party political figures get to eye with glee." "There is, the paper added, "constitutional office, propriety, legal compliance and good will for the government at stake here,” and it would be embarrassing for the government if any governor challenges the Centre in court.
Banal platitudes can have a life or death importance T
HERE are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, "Morning, boys. How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, "What the hell is water?" The point of the fish story is merely that the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. Stated as an English sentence, of course, this is just a banal platitude, but the fact is that in the day to day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have a life or death importance. Here's another didactic little story. There are these two guys sitting together in a bar in the remote Alaskan wilderness. One of the guys is religious, the other is an atheist, and
the two are arguing about the existence of God with that special intensity that comes after about the fourth beer. And the atheist says: "Look, it's not like I don't have actual reasons for not believing in God. It's not like I haven't ever experimented with the whole

"No, man, all that was was a couple Eskimos happened to come wandering by and showed me the way back to camp." The non-religious guy is so totally certain in his dismissal of the possibility that the passing Eskimos had anything to do with his prayer for help. True, there are plenty of religious people who seem arrogant and certain God and prayer thing. Just last month I got of their own interpretations, too. They're caught away from the camp in that terrible probably even more repulsive than atheists, blizzard, and I was totally lost and I couldn't at least to most of us. A ‘bullet’ budget THERE is hardly anything new in the ostentatious verbal announcement of the government concerns and their plans for better systems, administration and operations. The reading of the Railway Budget by the Union Minister of Railways was so mechanical and he gave the impression that he was reading some of the words for the first time and was also mispronouncing some words like 'inculcate' as 'incaculate' which was amusing. With respect to bullet trains/semi-bullet trains at 160200 km/hr, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Seemandhra and Kerala seem to have been totally neglected but impetus is given on North-bound trains from Delhi and a bullet train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. The Minster has promised RO Water to the railway passengers. The novelty seems to be the initiative to introduce bullet trains and to increase speed of the existing trains. As the minister is from Karnataka, he has laid emphasis on improvement of rail traffic in Bengaluru city and the suburbs but he has maintained silence on similar initiatives in other metros like Chennai and Hyderabad. — T M Uday Shankar, Mumbai
APROPOS 'Funds from FDI, private investments' (ADC, Jul 9), the budget certainly frustrates the Mumbaikars, as the railway infrastructure in this city of 14 million demands much more in terms of enhancing the number of services on the suburban front. Half the
city's population daily commuted in the locals which are divided into three sections. Safety standards in these locals are in a precarious state. The rakes should be provided with auto door shut facility as is in vogue round the world, the deadly gap traps between the footboard and the platform top should be reduced as specified, the medical emergency facility to cope with accidents needs to be installed on a war footing. The CM's insistence on undertaking the MUTP/MMRDA facility for the city rapid transit installation should not have been ignored when the railway revenue is higher than any other metro in the country. The railway minister should have not overlooked these issues. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train proposal just looks rosy. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
THE rail budget which speaks for the first time about bullet trains and other high-speed trains has thrown up a new form of social disparity. People may now be judged by the new status symbol, viz. bullet train wallas and ordinary train wallas. Will everyone be able to afford a bullet train travel? It doesn't seem so. Is its introduction purely to satisfy the corporate world then? Could the railways, facing such a financial crunch, have done away with this project (which surely is an expensive one) and instead introduced more fast and super fast trains benefiting a larger group of passengers? Cleanliness, hygienic food and security are still a con-

Unearthing the truth THE government has turned down the demand for making public the Henderson-Brooks Report on the 1962 Indo-China war, saying that its disclosure would not be OF in the national interest. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray hand, MNS leader is also preparing himself by announcing his name in the race of state CM. I would say that Uddhav could have been the best choice and people could have put the trust in him, but he perhaps may fail as the party has ruled over the BMC for many years, and failed to win the trust of Mumbaikars. In the upcoming Assembly elections, people are bound to be confused.
DJOKOVIC played to a plan to win his second Wimbledon in style. By breaking Federer's service in the tenth game of the decider, the seed number one player won the game, set, match and the Championship in style. You can write Federer off at your own peril. He keeps proving all those critics out there wrong. To go down in five sets against an opponent at the peak of his powers in a Grand Slam Final, that's not a bad effort for someone who will soon be turning 33. Like Djokovic said during the presentation, Federer is an absolutely fantastic role model never seen
before in the history of tennis. Kudos to both Federer and Djokovic for putting on a show like that. It was a match totally worthy of a Grand Slam Final. And that was a lovely presentation ceremony too. Not to start a debate on the greatest tennis player, I'd wished for Federer to beat Nadal in a French Open final – equaling the defeat at Wimbledon in 2008. But given how the equation at the top has changed since, beating Djokovic today would have given him an opportunity to retire in style.

he Congress-NCP ruling duo in the state has come down heavily on the Union Budget saying that it reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi's limited vision, besides apathy towards the state.Speaking to reporters, Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil described the budget as a FDI budget which aims to raise funds not from internal resources but from abroad specially in defence and insurance sector. Patil, who was state's former finance minister, further added: “Modi spoke of uplifting the poorest of the poor, efficient government and job opportunities during his election campaign. But nothing is reflected in this budget.” “Modi's India is limited to Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Gujarat. The budget focuses on making Delhi a world class city. For Sardar Patel's statue Rs.200 crore has been provided. We have no problem with it but the project is that of the Gujarat government. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik described the budget as a disappointment. “There is no new vision or road map. Hi THere! C
ommunal dining can evoke several images — the two most common ones would be the memory of a wedding or of your college days when, short on money, you had to opt for hole-in-the-wall bars, sharing tables with strangers, trying to figure out if it was you who had ordered that plate of Chicken 65. But for the past few years, communal dinning has taken on a new avatar. From cafés and bars, to fine-dine restaurants, food joints in the city now sport long, rectangular tables, inviting you to have a culinary experience with a group of people who you’ve never met before. Today, we delve into the restaurant industry of our city ,and try to find out about the beginnings of this trend and whether it is here to stay.
The beginnings
>> Community tables have always been a part of the food culture at Le Pain Quotidien’
The trend of eating with strangers at a community table or inviting someone to sit at your table has been around for a while now. But, has it been a success or is it just a gimmick that no one is paying attention to? Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry talk to restauranteurs, chefs and managers across the city to find out
setting, with a group of people who are enthusiastic about the concept of community tables. Silverspoon Gourmet, a food, is one of the most common reasons that restaurants in brand built on the idea of a communal culinary experience, the city started with the concept of community tables. is a great example. Founders Neha Manekia and Joshua D’Souza, tell us, “We open up our studio 4-5 times a month for a community experience like none other. At each event, interactions over food Vinod Garde, partner at Aoi, tells us, “We wanted to make our participants get to experience something totally our restaurant interactive and chef driven — especially different. This can range from a cheese making workshop, since we were offering a cuisine that is not native to Indians. with appetisers and beverages, to a tapas event where you We wanted guests to ask questions and find out more about get to make our signature sangria, watch a paella demo and our cuisine, while encouraging single diners enjoy some delectable tapas made by our speciality chefs!” The Big Bang Bar and Café, has put its own spin to the simultaneously.” Other restaurants, which are a part of international chains, feature community tables not just trend, as well. Mihir Desai, the co-owner, tells us, “Our idea because it is the ‘in thing,’ but because it is a part of their of conceptualising wider, square community tables ensures culture. Head chef and founder of Le Pain Quotidien, Alain that at least eight people can sit around each other and have Coumont, says, “The concept remains unchanged ever since real conversations, unlike longer tables where (maybe) one we opened the first Le Pain Quotidien outlet in Brussels in end cannot listen to the other. While some restaurants such as The White Owl and Le Pain Quotidien have featured community tables since the day they opened, others such as Tight Pub and Bar have started them quite recently. A hit or A miss
here to stAy?
Okay, so community tables are here and restaurateurs have enough reason to highlight the trend. But, how successful has the concept actually been? We found that there is no definite answer to the question. While some restaurants have found the idea to massively popular, some have their reservations about the trend.
While community tables are all the rage today, will they last for years to come, or will they fade into oblivion like several other trends such as molecular gastronomy, that didn’t really catch on with Indian diners?
A slow change Javed Murad, founder of The White Owl, tells us, “I really hope that community tables aren’t a trend and are more of a continuing evolution of a dining experience. I have always known Mumbai to be very cliquish and am happy to see a change in people’s willingness to meet new people. There are several expats over the city who have helped build informal communities of new people, which in turn has had a nice network (and behavioural) effect.” But, he also tells us that usually he observes people arriving in small groups and intermingling amongst themselves, as opposed to talking with the whole group at the table. Copa, is also a place that has had a mixed response; Gaurav, explains, “At Copa, the idea has taken off very well, though some guests aren’t comfortable with sharing their space. In more casual settings, community tables have found favour, but in a semi-formal/ formal set-up, guests aren’t entirely comfortable with sharing space. At the same time, I’ve seen guests being more than happy to interact, and they have, in fact, even shared cocktail pitchers and food!”
the trend is on the rise Syed Ali, manager at Out of The Blue, Powai thinks that there is no doing away with this trend as it provides a sense of companionship. “The concept of communal dining is definitely here to stay, as the number of single travellers, as well as individual diners is steadily on the rise. Keeping this in mind, it only makes sense to retain and add more
community tables as they give you company, while you eat out, without making you feel lonely. As far as our association with the trend goes, we are working on making the concept more accessible to our diners,” he adds.
Doing something new Taking the concept a step further, restaurants such as Aoi are aiming to make communal tables more inclusive and comforting for their diners. Vinod tells us, “Apart from interactions with other diners and our chefs, we also offer a fully stocked Manga library that single diners can browse through while they eat, without feeling awkward about eating alone.” Copa, on the other hand, is really doing its bit to help diners at communal tables mingle. “We love the idea of community tables and encourage diners to sit at them by sending platters/ shots for everyone at the table as an ice breaker. We plan to use community tables for tasting sessions as well — for our season specials and encourage guests to connect over these sessions,” explains, Gaurav. However, Neha and Joshua, from Silverspoon Gourmet aren’t entirely convinced. “We think it’s a concept that is interesting, but unless one innovates beyond the basic utility of a community table, we don’t know how successful it might be in the long run.” While those in the F&B industry have varying opinions when it comes to community tables, it isn’t a trend that you can ignore. We recommend that you give it a try the next time you find yourself bereft of a dining companion, or simply to strike up conversation with a stranger and enjoy the exciting, new experience that it provides!
A great success Silverspoon Gourmet, on the other hand, has had a contrastingly different response. Neha and Joshua tell us, “We have had tremendous success with the spin that we have put on the concept. We have an interesting community develop. People swap notes, make plans to go places together and of course, come back for our community events.” Manmeet Vohra, director of marketing and category at TATA Starbucks LTD., on the other hand, tells us that

helum Gosalia’s Panchtantra, is a presentation that promises to transform famed animal fables and tales, and adapt them into a play that will appeal to adults and children alike. What sets this play apart from any other one, is that it includes aerial live acts, body percussion, soundscaping as well as contemporary dance. The 26-year-old producer and director is bringing five different tales to the stage, with relatable characters and soulful music. When we asked Jhelum about her latest venture, she said, “My main goal with Panchatantra is to remind people of the depth of Indian texts, even if it is as basic as folk tales. One of my favourite stories is that of the double-headed peacock. It portrays the severe consequences when an individual becomes selfish. « store review: diva’ni & sva
High-street fashion A new fashion store, Diva’ni has set up shop in Santacruz. Dev Goswami pays them a visit and tells you what to expect
W
ith a two-story tall, towering mannequin right next to the entrance and a lavish reception area, Diva’ni is unapologetically stylish. You know that the store is dripping in high-street fashion the minute you step inside this Indowestern store. The wall of fame, which features pictures of Bollywood celebrities who have walked the ramp for Diva’ni, only reminds you that this is a store where the clothes are fashionable enough to be (and some actually have been!) worn by celebrities. However, unlike most celeb fashion haunts, Diva’ni is not one you need to run away from, because their vibe, pieces and staff are not intimidating, in any way. Climb up the flight of stairs and you’ll reach a well-spaced-out area, that stocks a great range of party-wear. Almost all of the items available at Diva’ni (except the saris), have western silhouettes, but are made from Indian materials and feature intricate embroidery. While this is not really a new trend, the collection at Diva’ni has a great range of refreshing designs and are presented in an array of colours. One of the first things I noticed about the collection, was that they didn’t go overboard with any particular design element — a mistake that most brands make when it comes to the western-silhouette-Indianembroidery trend. From floral and animal prints, to simple lines and polka dots, they have a lot to offer. The designs you prefer the most, will eventually boil down to your personal tastes,
but it’s easy to see that each design here matters. The attention to detail that I noticed on some of the dresses, gowns and lehengas (especially the extremely attractive, Swarovski crystal studded gown and sari displayed on the mannequins) is brilliant, to say the least. Their designs are complemented by the fact that they house almost every colour under the sun — which again makes for a fantastic and varied collection. From various colours to designs ranging from classic to funky (the Bollywood saris, featuring stills from popular films, might seem a bit tacky, but I found them quite interesting), you won’t be disappointed with what they have on offer in their sari section on the first floor. The final section on the first floor is devoted to Diva’ni’s brand — First Lady. Pay attention here, because this is where Diva’ni truly shines. The First Lady section is housed in an extremely luxurious room, where they display pieces that have been worn by celebrities in films, at events or at Diva’ni’s fashion shows. You can then work with their designers to customise them according to your preferences. The collection that they have on display
>> If you are looking for party outfits, visit Diva’ni for it’s vast range of party wear
features heavy work and provided you have deep pockets, enables you to dress like a super-star. While there are several Swarovski and French-inspired creations, the collection on the whole, aimed predominantly at brides, maintains a classic Indian vibe. One of the surprising parts about Diva’ni is that it is not as expensive as you’d imagine. The collections range from `10,000 onwards, while if you’re shopping from the First Lady range, you can expect to spend a minimum of `2 lakhs. But, what makes Diva’ni truly worth
a visit is that you can customise most of their designs according to your budget. You might have to skip a few design elements, but you can still get a pretty good piece that fits your budget. The store is definitely worth checking out. While the concept is not unique, their designs definitely are. Where Diva’ni, Anand Kunj, Linking Road, Near Arya Samaj, Santacruz (w) contact 26488090

A Ice Watch’s BMW Motosport collectIon
Popular Belgian watch brand, Ice Watch, has launched a new BMW Motosport collection which is prefect for every automobile and watch enthusiast. The new timepieces, by the luxury watchmakers, are a fine example of intricacy in design and unmatched style. With their sporty vibe, the Ice Watch BMW Motorsport collection has something for everyone. We especially love their dials which take their design cues from elegant, BMW cars. The watches are available for men and women, in eight different colours. Where www.ice-watch.com prIce `11,380 onwards
>> The lower level of the SVA store has a bridal lounge for customised appointments while the upper level (below) is solely for menswear
fter two successful years at Lakmé Fashion Week, designer-duo Sonam and Paras Modi have now opened their flagship store in Lower Parel. It’s not easy to find the store, located opposite Palladium, but once you do, you’ll be happy you took the trouble. The studio is spread out over two levels; both designed by Paras himself, with wood, brick and glass used abundantly to lend the store warmth. The menswear section is on the upper level and is fairly straightforward, while the womenswear section on the lower level is divided into a bridal lounge for customised appointments and a showcase area for browsing. The studio houses a variety of options, which serve to fulfil trousseau requirements for both the bride and groom, as well as for occasions such as mehendi, cocktails, sangeet, pheras and reception. From their signature anarkalis, lehengas and saris for women, to SVA kurtas, bandhgalas and sherwanis for men, there is nothing that you’ll find missing at the store. The current collection at the store is an amalgamation of luxury and tradition, and features new-age designs and colour
palettes that range from bright vermilions, reds, fuchsias, sunny oranges and canary yellows, to deep violets, blues, nudes and off-whites. Materials such as silk, georgette, chiffon, brocade, Lucknowi jaal and jamevaar lend the collection an innate Indian vibe. If you observe the designs closely, you will notice that they are welldetailed and focus on hand embroideries and age-old surface ornamentation such as pitawork, aari, gota, resham work, zari and taar work. The collection is priced between `20,000 and `3 lakhs. The launch of the store witnessed a host of celebrities such as Mandira Bedi, Neha Sharma and Karishma Tanna, dressed in clothes from SVA. Model Satyarupa Pune was also present at the event. While this isn’t the sort of store you can just browse through, if you are looking for a wedding outfit, we recommend paying them a visit. A good serving Shirley Mistry visits Fat Man’s Café, a quaint, quirky eatery in Bandra, that offers soul food to hungry diners >> While we were impressed by most of the dishes, our favourite was the Chicken Roulade
J
ust the name — Fat Man’s Café — is enough to pique your interest for this newly opened restaurant. My dining companion and I were thrilled to be visiting the café and landed up at the surprisingly packed restaurant, on a weekday night. While we were waiting for a table, the décor held our attention. The restaurant is swathed in shades of grey, lime green and bright blue and stands out from the other eateries that dot the lane. The interiors, designed by Rixi Bhatia, creative director of the fashion brand Quirkbox, have a happy, cheerful vibe. We settled into our seats (avoid the community table — it is tiny, with absolutely no privacy) and dove head-first into a comprehensive menu which includes soups, salads, burgers and mains, along with breakfast specials that we will have to return for, as they only serve those dishes up to 4pm. We started off with the Chicken Parmesan Broth (`250) that was warm and delicious. With succulent chunks of chicken and a distinct parmesan flavour, this light soup is a good way to begin your meal. Our appetisers included the Jacket Potatoes stuffed with chipotle corn cream (`240) and the bacon wrapped prawns (`360). While the jacket potatoes were great, with the corn cream and chipotle dressing providing a great mix of flavours and textures, the bacon wrapped prawns lacked a punch. We moved on to the Portobello Mushroom Sliders (`330 for 3) which were divine. Served with fries, each slider consists of grilled mushrooms, coated with pesto and mozzarella. We love that they didn’t crowd the burger with too many sauces or trimmings, and let the three basic ingredients work their magic instead. Next, we tried the Shredded Beef & Cheddar Sandwich (`300), which was ideal comfort food. The bread was crispy — a texture you only get when you grill a sandwich with a nice layer of butter, and the filling was well-spiced, with mustard and cheese that was well distributed in each bite. The standout dish of our meal however, was the Chicken Roulade, with Spinach and Feta (`475). With a delicious, minimally spiced filling of chicken and feta cheese, the roulade is served on a bed of sundried tomato risotto — which we could eat just by itself. Accompanied by flavourful, stir-fried vegetables, this dish was scarfed down in minutes! With a great meal behind us, we were eagerly looking
Cook like Chef A sk Rakhee why she decided to create recipes inspired by the film Chef, and she tells us, “The film inspired me in ways I can’t describe — especially when he cooks exotic meals for the critic at home to relieve his frustration, which is similar to what I do to get over anything that bothers me. Just like him, I choose to cook it out! Having a food truck has always been one of my dreams too, and I love the way he makes his cheese toast — simple, elegant and delicious! A food truck, for me, is the perfect showcase for a chef’s passion and to satiate all the customer’s senses! Nothing beats the high a chef gets with a happy customer.” Take a look at the recipes she came up with:
Method l Make gashes and marinate the pork overnight, with all the above ingredients, except the stock. Let the marinade seep in well. l Cook in a slow cooker or a deep thick dish
forward to dessert. However, most of the desserts on the menu were sold out and we were left with no option but to try the Dark Chocolate Mousse (`225). While their serving size — like most things on the menu — was massive, we did not enjoy this dessert. It was average at best and reminded us of the insipid mousse we grew up on, when good chocolate mousse simply wasn’t available, unless you whipped up a batch at home. On the whole, it was a great experience and the eatery truly lives up to its comfort food tag. However, they are extremely short on space, so make sure to get here early and bag a spot (or make a reservation), or you’re going to find yourself waiting for a while. We are definitely going to go back to try their breakfast egg bowl and waffles, and suggest you pay them a visit too, if you’re in the area. Chef, a film that’s all about food, has left us all salivating over the delicious dishes featured in it. In fact, celebrity chef Rakhee Vaswani was so inspired, that she came up with a variety of dishes inspired by the film. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more Method Slit the Ciabatta and place the ham slices over it. Brush it with mustard, add the pulled pork with some juices, pickled onions and cheese and brush butter generously on both sides and grill till the cheese almost oozes out. l Serve with Chatpata Sweet Potato Fries — Peel and thinly slice sweet potato with a mandolin slicer. Deep fry till crisp seasoning with salt. Sprinkle on top an equal mix of chilli powder and chaat masala and you are ready to go. l
Classic Alio Olio This is delicately tossed spaghetti in aromatic olive oil with fresh herbs, Parmesan cheese and a dash of red chilli.
Pulled Pork and Ham Cubano Sandwiches, with Chatpata Sweet Potato Fries Mojo is a traditional sour marination or sauce, in which the pork is steeped with lots of herbs. Instead of yucca, I’ve used sweet potato chips, but you can also use cassava (tapioca). Ingredients: 1 kg boneless pork shoulder, a few cloves of garlic, smashed, chopped oregano, 2 tsp cayenne pepper, 2 tsp cumin powder, 2 tbsp Demerara sugar, juice and rind of 2 sour oranges, juice and rind of 1 lemon, salt and pepper to taste, 3-4 tbsp olive oil, 2 cups chicken stock

Ingredients: 100g spaghetti (boiled al dente), 2 tbsp olive oil, 2-3 garlic cloves, 2-3 cherry tomatoes, 1 sliced red chilli, a pinch of mixed herbs, chopped parsley, 1 tbsp pasta liquid, 50g parmesan cheese. with the stock for 4-5 hours turning every once in a while. l Check by inserting a meat thermometer or a standard knife in the thickest part. If the juices run clear or if the meat falls apart on touching, it is cooked. Cover the meat with foil and let it rest. For the cubano sandwiches Ingredients: A few slices of ham, Ciabatta bread, butter for brushing, a few slices of mild English cheddar, mustard to slather, sliced, pickled onions, pulled pork
Method l Gently heat the olive oil in a pan, add garlic and switch off the gas. Let the garlic infuse the oil for a minute. l Put it back on the stove and add chilli, spaghetti, mixed herbs, cherry tomatoes, salt and pepper and toss well. l Add the grated Parmesan cheese and some pasta liquid, toss well with some fresh parsley and serve. Beignets with coconut cream These light and crispy, sweet parcels are
heavenly when served with coconut cream. Rakhee uses a recipe similar to a donut as the original recipe has evaporated milk, which is sometime hard to find. Ingredients: 250g flour, 5g salt, 30g sugar, 50g butter, 10g fresh yeast, 1 egg, 75 ml lukewarm water. For the coconut cream: A mixture of 50ml milkmaid and 100ml coconut milk. Method l Put flour on a work surface and make a hole in the centre. Add yeast, sugar and 2 tbsp lukewarm water. Let it froth and then mix it into the dough. Mix in the salt and egg, and knead by adding little water at a time. l Once a soft dough is achieved, add butter. Knead till you get smooth dough. Cover and keep aside to ferment, till it doubles in size. l Knock back and roll into a round of ¼ inch thickness and cut out squares or diamond shapes with a pizza cutter. Let it double on the baking tray. l Deep fry in hot oil. Check the first piece to see if it floats up the instant you put in the oil — if it does, you’ve got a good batch. Continue frying till golden brown and roll them in caster sugar once done. l Serve with coconut cream.

Unfriendly nations We’re sure that like us, your idea of a holiday is to relax and have a great time. However, unfriendly locals and an unsafe destination can ruin your entire trip. To prevent such a situation, Yamini Walia tells you what countries that you should be careful about visiting >> When it comes to hospitality, the picturesque Russian Federation lags far behind
Tourism Competitiveness Report, 2013. The report was based, primarily, on the attitude of citizens towards foreign tourists. According to reports, if a taxi driver in Bolivia realises that you are a tourist, he will charge you double than what he would charge locals. People will stare relentlessly, irrespective of what you wear or how polite you are, not to mention how inebriated locals and drug abusers are always present on the streets. If you don’t understand Spanish, it’s difficult to enjoy a vacation in Bolivia.
friendly nations, according to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, 2013. The country was once a hot spot for tourists, but because of factors such as political unrest, security issues, lack of foreign exchange and regular electric failures, Venezuela has become hostile, dangerous and chaotic. >> The people of Kuwait don’t believe in the concept of tourism

>> While Bolivia (L) has a rich culture, it ranks first among the least friendly nations.
Y
our must-visit list of holiday destinations may include places with beautiful landscapes and gorgeous flora and fauna, but do you account for the attitude of the locals and the facilities available? Those are important factors that need to be taken into consideration while planning a holiday, and when you hail from a friendly nation such as India, where we are taught Atithi Devo Bhavah (guest is God), coming across unfriendly locals will be a rude shock. While we’re not suggesting a blanket ban on visiting any of the following countries, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, listed them as unsafe and unfriendly, so make sure you get expert opinion and plan your vacation down to the T if you’re planning to head there. So, before you plan your next holiday, see what nations won’t welcome you with open arms.
iRan Next up on the list is Iran, located in western Asia. Tourism in Iran declined during World War II and is still not up to the mark. Weak advertising, unstable regional conditions, a poor public image and the absence of efficient planning schemes are factors that are responsible for poor tourism in Iran. Language seems to be the biggest barrier, as most people don’t converse in English. In today’s day and age, if the people of a country can’t communicate in English, it can’t be termed as a tourist friendly destination.
venezuela
The Russian FedeRaTion Russia is a beautiful destination, but it is also among the least friendly ones and ranks after Bolivia and Venezuela. The main language spoken here is, quite obviously, Russian, followed by Tatar and Ukrainian. The reason the federation ranks so high among the least friendly nations, is because of its lack of safety and security measures. Apart from this, the country also has high crime and violence statistics and the police can’t be trusted to provide adequate protection.
slovakia Another European country, Slovakia, features among the least friendly nations. The official language is Slovak and the country is home to several tourist spots such as natural landscapes, mountains, caves, medieval castles and towns. Even with so many tourist attractions, it’s
Latvia is located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe and according to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, it ranks fifth amongst the least friendly nations. The people of Latvia are not only unfriendly, but are also impolite. Most of the locals will give you the same answer to any question — “I don’t know!”, while, the rest will simply blow you off with a straight face. However, when the World Economic Forum report was published, the economic minister of Latvia, Daniels Pavluts, defended the country, saying that residents are not the most unfriendly, but instead are self-critical about their attitude towards tourists.
kuwaiT Kuwait is an Arabian country located in Western Asia. It ranks fourth amongst the least friendly nations. A visit to Kuwait for business might be fine, but otherwise, it is touted as one of the most unfriendly cities in the Middle East. The problem with Kuwait is that it doesn’t encourage tourism, since their culture is not tourism-oriented. Even getting a tourist visa to visit Kuwait is an uphill task.
PakisTan Pakistan ranks seventh among the least friendly nations. Pakistan has almost nothing working in its favour, especially after the 9/11 attacks. Everyone is scared to visit the country because of the numerous terrorist organisations that are believed to be active there. The political structure is also quite shaky, particularly after the Benazir Bhutto incident. The only thing going for the country is the friendly locals, who are sure to change your perception about Pakistan.
Another South American country, Venezuela follows Bolivia when it comes to unfriendly shocking that the country is not a recommended place for tourists. According to reports, bureaucracy and the impolite nature of Slovaks towards tourists, are the main reasons behind poor tourism. Like several nations listed above, language is a problem here as well.
Bolivia Bolivia is a landlocked country located in South America. It is a democratic republic, with a multi-ethnic population consisting of Europeans, Asians and Africans. However, the main language spoken here is Spanish. The culture of Bolivia is heavily influenced by Quechua, the Aymara, as well as by the popular cultures of Latin America. However, it ranks first amongst the rudest countries in the world, according to the Travel and
locals. The main language spoken here is Spanish as well, though the country has a diverse population. Venezuela is famous for its waterfalls and for its beautiful people. However attractive the country might sound, it ranks second amongst the least

The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 252 points. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were losers, while 18 stocks closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in realty, infrastructure and power stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 32.90%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

The budget has opted for a cautious approach toward tackling some of the economy’s structural weaknesses, says S&P
By A Business Reporter
However, the budget announced yesterday has opted for a he “commitment of the new cautious approach toward tackIndian government to main- ling some of the economy's structaining the trend of fiscal con- tural weaknesses” says Standard & solidation would benefit the Poor's Ratings Services sovereign's credit fundamentals. The budget for fiscal 2015 (ending
T
March 31, 2015) aims to cut the central government deficit to 4.1% of GDP, and to 3.6% of GDP in the following two years, from 4.6% in fiscal 2014. India's high fiscal deficit and resultant debt stock of about 70% of GDP are two of the main constraints on the sovereign rating. "It is unclear how the government will offset revenue loss from tax cuts and raising the income-tax exemption threshold proposed in the budget on the expenditure side," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Agost Benard. On the revenue side, receipts in the proposed budget are boosted by a near 8% year-on-year rise in capital receipts, inflows that are of a one-off nature and we therefore don't consider as part of government revenue. Moreover, it is uncertain whether the goods and services tax, a key component of simplifying the tax structure and raising revenues, will be approved by the end of this year as the finance minister stated. "The budget is less ambitious in reducing the subsidy burden," said Benard. "It promises better targeting of food and petroleum subsides. However, it is not yet clear how that will be achieved, or how much saving it would bring." Moreover the total budget for food subsidies is the same as that for fertilizers, and higher than in the previous government's budget. One of the new government's main policy goals is to boost foreign invest-
ment as part of a package of measures to stimulate economic growth. The budget raises limits on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the defense and insurance sectors to 49%. It is unclear whether this will be sufficient to give a substantial boost to
FDI in these sectors. Nonetheless, this should improve investor perceptions and growth prospects. Based on the above factors, “our view is that the budget has no immediate impact on the sovereign credit rating on India (unsolicited rating BBB-/Negative/A-3). The negative outlook on the sovereign rating on India indicates that Standard & Poor's may lower the rating in the next year or so if the new government proves unable to reverse India's low economic growth. Conversely, we could revise the outlook to stable if the administration can restore some of India's lost growth potential and consolidate its fiscal accounts” concludes S&P.

ine-centric script, I found it rather unconventional, yet having an emotional undercurrent.” Not surprisingly, the versatile Vidya had a “blast”, sporting multiple bizarre ‘get-ups’ in the movie. Apparently, her male beggar’s costume got her into an awkward spot. She recalls, “It was a demanding yet delightful experience, donning all those male disguises. Honestly, I could not recognise myself when I glanced into the mirror. No wonder then, when I was transformed into a ‘beggar’ and we shot on location outside a railway station in Hyderabad, the actual local beggars became upset and apprehensive. Because they initially thought that I was trespassing on their territory and snatching away their alms. In fact, a lady passer-by reprimanded me for begging as she felt I was fit and fine enough to work hard for a living. That, I guess, was a huge disguised compliment,” chucklesVidya who had taken a recent holiday-break, as she had a health issue. “It’s unfortunate that I had to reluctantly back out from director Sujoy (‘Kahani’) Ghosh’s upcoming movie,” shrugs the actress who is a connoisseur of classical and fusion music.
C You need talent to survive here With a number of chart toppers to his credit, singer Mika Singh is currently in the golden period of his career. He is riding high on the success of his hit songs in films like 'Singh is King', 'Jab We Met', 'Humshakals', 'Tanu Weds Manu', 'Desi Boys', 'Bodyguard', etc. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur met the singer in a chatty mood recently. Excerpts from the interview:
rime detection and social snooping need not be more of a ‘male monopoly’. Ask National Award winner Vidya Balan whose latest release ‘Bobby Jasoos’, directed by Samar Shaikh and coproduced by Dia Mirza, is whipping up rave ‘taareef’ for her ‘authentic performance’ from her ardent fans...despite the lukewarm overall box-office response. Counters the exuberant Balan, “Don’t you think female detectives can prove to be ‘one-up’ on the guys? Because women are more sharp and have an inquisitive eye for minute details. In ‘Bobby Jasoos’, however, my vibrant character is shown as an untrained, amateurish neighbourhood sleuth with the enthusiasm of a go-getter. She even has this child-like quality of craving for appreciation after her mission is accomplished,” she chuckles. What was it in ‘Bobby Jasoon’ that appealed to Vidya who is fastidious in accepting lead roles? She instantly reacts, “The fact that, one has hardly ever heard of an on-screen female detective. When I heard the this hero-
Who do you credit for your current successful phase? I have worked very hard to reach wherever I am today. Credit is also due to my fans because as it is because of them that I have been able to achieve so much success in life. Every song that I am singing is becoming a hit. Did you have to struggle a lot to achieve this golden phase? If you have to achieve something, you will always have to work hard. But I had confidence in myself that whatever I do, I will give my best. Gurdas-maan and Daler-paaji have been my inspiration.
Honey Singh, the new singer from Punjab, is giving you competition? With so many songs being recorded every day, there is enough place for all the talented singers. Every twothree years, we see new singers entering the industry. As a newcomer,Honey Singh is doing a fantastic job. If you want to survive at what you do, you have to be extremely talented.
Who is your favourite composer and why? Pritam. He is a very talented musician and he has helped me a lot. One thing that amazes me is his knowledge of Punjabi folk songs and music despite being a Bengali. It’s astonishing that he knows so much about Punjabi music. What do you have to say about the current music scene? The current scene is very good as everybody is getting a chance to perform and showcase their talent. New singers are getting popular, it is yet to be seen who will survive in the long run.
How would you rate your journey in Bollywood so far? Music is a passion and what we do is a job. It ultimately boils down to teamwork and we derive immense happiness from it.
Alia wants some action and comedy Riteish replaces Kapil in ‘Bank-Chor’ By A Staff Reporter
‘E
k Villain' star Riteish Deshmukh has replaced comedian Kapil Sharma in Yash Raj Films' upcoming comedy 'Bank-Chor'. Sharma, best known for his chat show 'Comedy Nights With Kapil', had a three-film contract with YRF and was slated to star in 'BankChor', but the production house recently announced that he was no longer a part of the movie. The film is scheduled to go on floors immediately and is planned for an early 2015 release. Riteish, 36, has done a number of comedy films such as 'Grand Masti', 'Kya Super Cool Hai Hum', 'Housefull' and 'Humshakals'. He earned critical acclaim for his villainous turn recently in 'Ek Villain'. "Loved the script. Loved the character. Loved the team. I've always liked to push the envelope with the choices I make. This film allows me to potentially rip it apart. Watch out there is a new 'Bank-Chor' in town," Riteish said. "Riteish is one of the most exciting actors of today. From villainy to action, in his upcoming 'Lai Bhaari', there is nothing he can't do! And with 'Bank Chor', Riteish is in a zone that is a serious strength–comedy! He adds the scale, madness and weight that this project deserves. The audiences are in for one hell of a ride now," said Ashish Patil, Business & Creative Head, Youth Films.
Alia Bhatt is on a high after the success of her films like ‘Highway’ and ‘Two States’. Now her next ambitious Karan Johar production ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ is about to release. We met the spirited lass at Dharma Productions plush office in suburban Mumbai. Here is how the free-wheeling chat went. By Sandeep Hattangadi
The title ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ seems a bit odd. Yes. It is a take off from 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'. We took this title to make it more appealing.
What is your character in the film? I play a feisty and bubbly, but simple, girl next door called Kavya Pratap Singh whose only dream is to wed her beloved boyfriend and to wear a designer lehenga from the label that Kareena Kapoor wears in her favourite film. She comes down to the city to search for that elusive designer lehenga which she wants badly and the whole film is based on her search for the lehenga. Did your expertise in fashion designing help you? Sort of. But really, the character is not really aware of the top designers, except those of whom she has heard of like Manish Malhotra or so on. What is Varun Dhawan role’s in the film?
He plays a small town and full-of-fun boy called Rakesh who has nothing much to do in his life except than roaming around with his two best friends. He has no ambition in life and it’s my character who inspires him to do something with his life.
How was it like working with Shashank Khaitan as the director? He is a very talented director, very patient and very clear in his mind about what he wanted from his actors. Also TV star Sidharth Shukla is making his debut in the film. He has done a fabulous job too. You have also sung a song. Yes. I even sang for 'Highway'. I love singing, though I am not a trained singer. My song 'Samjhhawan' is catching up on the bill boards and the composers Sachin-Jigar and Toshi–Sharibi have done a fabulous job. Both your co-stars from ‘Student Of The Year’ are riding high after successful films. Yes. It’s all hard work and good selection of scripts that has done the trick for us. I am happy for Siddharth and Varun, of course, is my buddy with whom I am doing my second film. It was a great experience. You had a contract with Karan Johar. It was a three film contract and ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ is the third film under Dharma Productions. Do you regret not being a part of Ashiqui-2. No. I am happy for Shraddha and wish her well.
Who are the directors on your wish list? I am dying to work with Rohit Shetty. Be it an action or a comedy film. Your mother Soni Bhatt is starting her own film. Are you a part of that? No. Because I don’t fit in any of the characters in the film.

he third quarter of the year, started on a bit of a damp note, with neither Bobby Jasoos nor Lekar Hum Deewana Dil doing well. This week’ Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, has been designed to appeal to young audiences and newfound fans of Alia Bhatt andVarun Dhawan. There plenty to look forward to over the next quarter anyway. Promos of Salman Khan starrer Kick expectedly created a sensation with the Jumme ki raat song. The recently released promos of Pizza, Finding Fanny and Haider have got a lot of eyeballs. The film has been directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a story and screenplay written by Saiwyn Quadras. he sequel to the Kangana Ranaut and R. Madhavan starrer 'Tanu Weds Manu' has been embroiled in quite a bit of controversy with one of the film's financers staking his claim to the film's rights. However, director Anand L. Rai has stood firm asserting that the sequel to the film is very much on the books and happening. Now we hear that the south star Dhanush, who made his Bollywood debut alongside Sonam Kapoor with the film 'Raanjhanaa', that was inci-
dentally also directed by Rai, will be seen doing a cameo in 'Tanu Weds Manu' sequel. However, though the details of Dhanush's cameo are sketchy, there is a possibility of him either doing small scene or appearing in a song. As for the sequel itself, despite the battle over the rights, the team will begin shooting in September this year. Expected to be extensively shot in Lucknow, the sequel will once again feature R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles.

he Prabhu Dheva directed film Rowdy Rathore that released in 2012 featuring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha, was a turning point in Akshay's career. Ending his dry spell at the box office, Rowdy Rathore kick started Akshay's journey to the coveted Rs. 100 crore club. Now two years later, we hear that the film which was a remake of the Telugu film 'Vikramarkudu', is all set to have a sequel. In fact the sequel will yet
again have Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shabina Khan teaming up to produce the same. The decision to make a sequel to the film was taken last week and once again the film will top line Akshay as the main lead and be directed by Prabhu Dheva. However the rest of the cast is yet to be locked. The filming of Rowdy Rathore 2 will commence only next year. Currently the makers are in the process of locking a script for the film.

Shami, Kumar slam half-centuries to help India post formidable 457
N
OTTINGHAM: England's problems were compounded on day two of the first Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, as Indian tail-enders Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar orchestrated a record alliance - and captain Alastair Cook's woeful stretch of form continued. At stumps England were 43 for one in reply to India's mammoth 457 all out. While Shami and Kumar's 111run stand for the 10th wicket and Cook's departure for just five capped the woe, England too lamented wicketkeeper Matt Prior dropping half-centurion Mahendra Singh Dhoni early on Thursday and seamer Liam Plunkett's failure to appeal an obvious edge. Resuming on 259 for four, the Indians boasted high hopes of posting a formidable first-innings score and perhaps only batting once in this vital series opener. Centurion Murali Vijay and Dhoni remained at the fore of the charge, but fell in relatively quick succession for 146 and 82 respectively.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, left, celebrates 50 runs with Mohammed Shami during day two of the first Test cricket match between England and India.
A pitch otherwise maligned for a docile nature enjoyed momentary life, as a dramatic collapse brought five wickets for the addition of 42 runs. From the promise of 304 for four, the tourists had slipped to 346 for nine. Shami and Kumar, however, refused to go down without a fight. Frustrating the opposition attack entirely, numbers nine and 11 secured a maiden Test century each in a stand that spanned almost three hours - and amounted to a record 111 runs. Surpassing the 109 gathered by 1952 duo Hemu Adhikari and Ghulam Ahmed against Pakistan in Delhi, but falling short of the 133 amassed by the veteran Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan versus Bangladesh in Dhaka a decade ago, Shami and Kumar settled for the country's second-highest lastwicket combination in Test match cricket. The defiance ensured a final total of 457 all out - and arguably more importantly - kept the home side in the field for a full 161 overs. Fast bowler Stuart Broad's limb and vis-
It’s dream come true for me: Murali Vijay By Chetan Narula
N
OTTINGHAM: Elated at scoring his maiden overseas hundred and fourth of his career, Indian opener Murali Vijay said his fine effort on the opening day of the first Test against England here was a dream come true for him. Vijay’s unbeaten 122 on Wednesday helped India hold their own at 259 for four at stumps after electing to bat at Trent Bridge. “I had been hitting the ball well in practice games and in the nets. So I was in a positive frame of mind and wanted to give the team a good start. The pitch was good to bat on and I wanted to cash in this opportunity. I have dreamt of this and it is a happy feeling for me,” said Vijay. Vijay had been getting starts in his last eight Test innings in South Africa and New Zealand, but yielded only one half century. It was something that perhaps played on his mind, but the batsman said that he did not change his approach, know-
that and I moved forward without thinking too much about it,” he said. “Patience is something that I have been working on. You need to bide your time at the crease and not be in a hurry. It is a five-day game and you want to tire the opposition out. So that has been my game-plan and this is what I have been working on all this while. Once you get set and the rhythm gets going, you enjoy in the middle,” he added. While Vijay was stroking his way through to the century, things started to go wrong for India in the second session when two quick wickets fell. But he added 71 runs with Ajinkya Rahane and then 81 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket with skipper Mahendra Singh Murali Vijay raises his bat on Dhoni to help India to safety. reaching the pavilion after his “After lunch it was reversing a bit fine century. and it was also a little windy. UMBAI: Unseeded Pradeep Chaudhary scored an upset win over fourth seed Aman Kumbhani in a boy’s under-17 first round match of the first leg of the Indian Squash Professional (ISP) organised, Rs 4 lakh prize-money All-India JVPG-Coke Squash Carnival, played at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana courts on Thursday. Pradeep played with plenty of grit and determination to sideline his seeded opponent Aman in five
games, winning at 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5 to book his passage to the second round. The top three seeds, Sandeep Paswan, Aryaman Adik and Arpit Chotalia comfortably marched to the second round. In first round action, top seed Sandeep defeated Pranav Mehta 11-8, 11-3, 11-5; Aryaman seeded second prevailed over Arpit Chotalia 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 and number three seed Dev Vazirani tamed Vikas Pal 11-1, 11-1, 11-5. Meanwhile, in the boy’s under-15
quarter-final matches, top seed Rahul Baitha and fourth seed Suraj Chand scored contrasting victories to advance to the last four. While Rahul easily got the better of Vikas Chand 11-2, 11-5, 11-8, Suraj fought back from the loss of the opening two games to overcome Aryaman Pandya 6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6. ible ache typified a very tough day, while fellow right-armer James Anderson was marginally consoled by final figures of three for 123. Broad, Anderson and Plunkett shared all of 108 overs - and at least one will surely be rested for the second Test at Lord's. Left with the final 17 overs of the day to successfully combat, Cook characteristically failed. Now 25 Test innings without a century and ever closer to being revealed of the leadership, the languishing left-hander contrived to be bowled around the legs by seamer Shami for just five. The Australian-bred Sam Robson and Zimbabwean-born Gary Ballance were later at hand to lead the English to the safety of the close of play. A stodgy start of 43 for one, though, will require patient progression come Friday's gradual reduction of a daunting 414-run deficit. Brief Scores: India 457 all out (M Vijay 146, C Pujara 38, A Rahane 32, M S Dhoni 82, B Kumar 58, M Shami n.o. 51; J Anderson 3/123, S Broad 2/53) vs England 43 for one.
Anderson criticises batting friendly track OTTINGHAM: England fast N bowler James Anderson was vocal in his criticism of the placid
Trent Bridge pitch, saying that the wicket assisted India more than the home side on the first day of the first Test. “We are fantastic hosts,” said Anderson jokingly at the press conference after the day’s play. “It is a little frustrating because you want it to be an even contest between the bat and ball, and it does not seem to be at the moment,” he said. “But we have been aware as a bowling unit that the Test pitches will be more batsmen friendly. So I think our bowling was fantastic today. We could have moaned about it and worried about it, but we just gave our best,” he added. It was a frustrating day for the hosts as much talk centred on the placid pitch laid out for this Test match. It is the third such pitch in succession for a Test this summer and considering that England lost to Sri Lanka prior to this series, it will not have pleased the home side. India sped off to a great start but were pegged back by quick wickets after lunch. But Vijay held the innings together, putting together a 71run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane and then an 81-run unbeaten partnership with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to anchor his team to safety. The wickets had come in between largely thanks to some fancy fielding positions and Anderson praised his captain Alastair Cook for that.

The second semifinal between the two heavyweight teams ended scoreless in the regulation 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time and its result had to be decided via penalty shootout. Captain Lionel Messi, Ezequiel Garay, Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez scored for Argentina while only Arjen Robben and Dirk Kuyt could found the target for the Netherlands. Romero turned out to be the hero for Argentina as he blocked shots from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder to take his side to the fifth World Cup final. Two-time champions Argentina now take on threetime winners Germany in the summit clash at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. This will be Argentina's first World Cup final entry in 24 years after 1990 when they lost to Germany in the final under Diego Maradona. In stark contrast to the goals galore in Germany's 7-1 humiliation of Brazil in the first semifinal yesterday, today's match was more of a battle of attrition with very few goal-scoring chances with both sides trying to break down their opponents gradually. The clash between the two heavyweights was though not without some tense and gripping spells with some fine build-ups but none of the two sides either blinked or committed mistakes
to give the other team a chance. The Dutch were able to keep Argentine captain Messi quiet for most part of the match with Ron Vlaar doing a great job by denying the four-time World Player of the Year free space, stopping him with fine tackles on a couple of occasions. Messi's opposite number in the Dutch team, Robin van Persie, who made it to the starting line-up after recovering from a stomach problem just in time for the match, had a forgettable outing though he played the full 90 minutes before being substituted six minutes into the extra time. Rodrigo Palacio had a glorious
chance to score for Argentina five minutes before the end of extra time but he headed into the hands of Dutch goalie Jasper Cillessen who was at his mercy. The first half was a cagey and tense affair with both sides unable to create clear chances, the closest either team came to breaking the deadlock was Messi's free kick in the 20th minute that Cillessen dived to his right to comfortably save. Argentina came close to scoring in the 75th minute when an Enzo Perez delicious through ball was toe-poked towards the goal by Gonzalo Higuain only to hit the side nettings. The Nether-

lands pressed hard and laid sieze of Argentina citadel towards the close of regulation time and Arjen Robben was sent clean through inside Argentine penalty area by Wesley Sneijder in the 90th minute but Javier Mascherano made a remarkable recovery to deflect the Dutch winger's shot. Just before kick-off, a moment of silence was observed at Arena de Sao Paulo to pay homage to Argentine-born Real Madrid legend Alfredo de Stefano who passed away yesterday at the age of 88. The Argentine players wore armband in the match in honour of de Stefano, one of the greatest footballers in history.

SAO PAULO: The Netherlands' penalty shootout loss to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday was an unjust way for them to exit the tournament, according to playmaker Wesley Sneijder. "We deserve much better," said the Galatasaray midfielder, one of two Dutch players to see a penalty saved by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena. "Argentina were playing for penalties, which wasn't the case with us. We tried to play. I missed my penalty. It's a shame. But it's particularly frustrating not to have capitalised on the chances we created over the 120 minutes." Argentina won 4-2 on penalties after the contest finished 0-0 following extra time. They will play Germany in the final on Sunday. Dutch centre-back Ron Vlaar saw his opening spot-kick saved by Romero, but having produced a commanding display over the course of the game, he said that he would not let it get him down. "It's sport, and it's tough. But I'm a man and I'm not going to whinge about it," he said. "Of course, I know that I played well, but positive feelings pass to one side now that I've missed my penalty. We're going home empty-handed. It's sad, because the only thing that counts is the title. There's still the third-place match (against Brazil). But it's not the same thing."
PLAY-OFF FOR 3RD PLACE SUNDAY

AO PAULO: Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella believes a well-rested Germany will have the advantage against the weary South Americans in Sunday's World Cup final. Sabella's players advanced to the Maracana showpiece in a gruelling extra-time and penalty shoot-out battle with the Netherlands that the Argentina coach described as like a "war." The fact that Germany have had an extra day's rest and effectively had their 7-1 win over Brazil wrapped up inside half an hour could be crucial, Sabella said. "Some of our players are sore, beaten, tired -- the results of a

war, so to speak," said Sabella. "We have a final to play, with one day less to prepare and against a team like Germany, but with work, humility and seriousness, we'll do all we can to make it all the way to the top. Sabella spoke admiringly of German football, saying they often produced players with a "South American touch." "Germany throughout their entire history have always shown physical might, tactical, mental prowess, and have always had players with a certain South American touch," he said. "The match is extremely difficult and I repeat the fact they haven't played extra time and we've

played two, and played one day after Germany. "Germany is always a very difficult hurdle to overcome. We'll see if it's a minor issue, the fact we played after and the Germany game was decided in the first 45 minutes, so they could ease off in the second half, whereas we had to spend all the effort, and every last drop of sweat to reach the World Cup final." Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero repelled penalties from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder in the penalty shootout after a cagey stalemate finished 0-0 following extra time at the Corinthians Arena. Argentina, chasing their third World Cup title, last reached
the final in Italy in 1990, when they lost 1-0 to West Germany. Sabella meanwhile praised defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano, who pulled off a sensational block to deny Arjen Robben. "Mascherano is a symbol, an emblem. We were able to move onto the semi-finals and he took this huge weight of his shoulders," Sabella said. "He's an outstanding player. Other clubs wanted to take him. I don't need to make any other comments. (Pep) Guardiola, (Rafa) Benitez, these coaches wanted to take him with them. He's an emblem for the national squad on the field of play and off it."

AO PAULO: The World Cup can only hope that Lionel Messi is leaving his best for last. In the most important World Cup match to date in his epoch-shaping career, football's superstar was neither super nor a star. The four-time world player of the year was a bystander, not a decisive protagonist, for large chunks of Wednesday's semifinal, his first on football's biggest stage. The match dragged on into extra time and then still finished 0-0 in large part because Messi failed to leave his mark on it as he has done on hundreds of others for Barcelona, his club, but not for Argentina, his country that needs him now to step up. Frankly disappointing. In the penalty shoot-out, Messi did score the all-important nerve-
steadying first goal that his teammates then built on, heaping intolerable pressure on the Netherlands after its first shooter, Ron Vlaar, saw his effort saved. But Messi's contribution to Argentina's win pretty much started and stopped there. His thousands of fans in the Sao Paulo crowd chanted "Ole, ole, ole, Messi, Messi!" But he didn't really do anything to deserve it. Bottom line: Messi needs to be spectacular in the final against Germany on Sunday if he is to put his stamp on World Cup history like Diego Maradona. Pub debates about who was/is a better footballer, Messi, Maradona or Pele, are always entertaining but ultimately can't be answered, because these judgments are very much a personal

thing, because the three of them played in different eras and because their careers took different arcs. Still, at this stage of the 1986 World Cup, Maradona was pretty much winning the thing singlehanded. Captain of Argentina, just like Messi, Maradona scored both goals against Belgium in the semifinal, carrying the team to the final where it beat West Germany, 3-2. Maradona also scored both Argentine goals that eliminated England in the quarterfinals. The first was the infamous "Hand of God" punched in with his raised fist; the second was a gem after a sublime dribble past five England players. Messi, on the other hand, hasn't scored since the group stage here in Brazil.

Sergio Romero of Argentina saves the penalty kick of Ron Vlaar of the Netherlands in a shootout during the World Cup semifinal at Arena de Sao Paulo.
NO-ONE WANTED TO TAKE
THE FIRST PENALTY
S
AO PAULO: Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says two of his players refused to take the first penalty in their World Cup semi-final shootout defeat by Argentina. Defender Ron Vlaar stepped up but Sergio Romero - a player who was "taught how to stop penalties" by Van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar - saved his kick. Argentina won the shootout 4-2 and will face Germany in Sunday's final. "I asked two players to take the first ball before ending up with Vlaar," said new Manchester United boss Van Gaal. "I thought he was the best player on the pitch so should have confidence." Van Gaal was also left to rue the intervention of goalkeeper Romero, who he signed for AZ from Buenos Aires-based Racing Club in 2007. The Argentine spent two years working under Van Gaal before the 62year-old departed for Bayern Munich."I taught Romero how to stop penalties, so that hurts," Van Gaal said. "We were the club to bring him to

Europe. He was a big talent, and someone who has the qualities to do that." Romero sought out his former manager at the end of the match. "I went to the dressing room to thank him," he said. "He is someone who helped me a lot when I arrived in the Netherlands, in a completely different country, with different customs. "At the beginning I didn't speak a word, and he spoke Spanish and he helped me a
lot." The last-four tie in Sao Paulo was decided by penalties following a goalless draw where both sides barely threatened in an uninspiring 120 minutes. The Dutch scored all four of their spot-kicks tobeat Costa Rica in the quarter-final shootoutwhen captain Robin van Persie converted their first effort. But with the Manchester United striker substituted in extra-time, Van Gaal was forced to turn to Aston Villa centre-back Vlaar. His low effort was stopped by Romero, who then denied Wesley Sneijder as the Dutch missed two of their four penalties. "It just goes to show it's not easy scoring in a shootout," said Van Gaal. "It's the most terrible scenario, to lose on penalties. At the very least we were equal with them, if not the better team. It's a big disappointment. "Winning on penalties in your previous match should give you confidence. We took those penalties in an incredible way against Costa Rica."
Germany takes ‘tiki-taka’ to another level
PORTO SEGURO (BRAZIL): Germany has taken the "tikitaka" passing game so intrinsically used by Spain to another level at the World Cup in Brazil, by adding ruthless efficiency to the possession philosophy. Germany is one win from capturing its World Cup fourth title following the astonishing 7-1 demolition of host Brazil in the semifinals. Spain beat Germany at two major tournaments and coach Joachim Loew was so impressed by the Spanish game that he has taken over many aspects and, of course,
added some of his own flourishes. Germany likes possession, just as Spain did, but Loew's team avoids endless wide passing and prefers to push forward at every occasion. When Germany wins the ball in its half, Loew wants his players to pass it quickly forward, hoping to outnumber the opposing defense. The result is that Germany creates many chances and scores plenty of goals. Spain's minimalists scored eight goals in winning the 2010 World Cup Germany already has 17 here, with one
match remaining to play. Spain beat Germany in the final of the 2008 European Championship and again in the semifinals of the 2010 World Cup. But while Spain's game was based on endless possession and passing until an occasional chance was created, Loew's lineup is happy to attack and take risks. "We want possession but that is only one factor in our game," Loew said earlier in the tournament. "We want to keep the ball low, we want to avoid long and high balls and we want quick transition. We need to improve our efficiency."
TERESOPOLIS (BRAZIL): Brazil's injured striker Neymar will attend Saturday's third place play-off when the battered World Cup hosts take on the Netherlands. Brazil were consigned to the ignominy of fighting out a game Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has attacked as "unfair" after their 7-1 semi-final mauling by Germany. Neymar's absence dominated the buildup to Tuesday's humiliation. The Barcelona striker missed out after fracturing a vertebrae in the quarter-final win over Colombia. "Neymar will come here (to Brazil's World Cup base), he's going to accompany the team to Saturday's match," confirmed Brazil football federation spokesman Rodrigo Paiva to R7.Com. Paiva announced the news at Brazil's World Cup headquarters in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro. The Barcelona superstar's absence and as importantly that of suspended defender and captain Thiago Silva contributed to Tuesday's shocking Belo Horizonte battering by a Germany side that now faces Argentina in Sunday's final. Van Gaal's Holland find themselves in the play-off after Wednesday's 4-2 penalty shoot-out loss to Argentina.
