ore than a fortnight after the firing on film producer and 2G spectrum accused Karim Morani's bungalow, the city police is set to issue a red corner notice against the US-based event organiser. Bittu Singh is prima facie considered the mastermind in the firing case, said city police chief Rakesh Maria. Hitherto, the probe suggests that the firing was the handiwork of members of the Ravi Pujari gang, who are referred to as Chindi-Chor in the city's underworld these days. According to investigators, the firing was carried out on the instructions of Singh, who wanted Morani to give him the contract to organise the global 'SLAM! (Sound,

Gangster Ravi Pujari Light, Action, Music) The Tour' shows, to promote Shahrukh Khan's new movie 'Happy New Year'. Since Morani denied Singh's request, the latter allegedly hired the gangsters, who then threatened the film producer with dire consequences if Singh was not favoured, said crime branch officials. “Considering the evidence against Singh, we are coordinating with the Interpol,"

Red-corner notice A red-corner notice is an international arrest warrant issued by the France-based Interpol, the world's largest international police organisation, on suspicion of a fugitive hiding out in another country. added Maria. “This is the beginning of a crackdown on the underworld and its sympathisers, supporters and informers.” On August 23, three unidentified men linked to fugitive gangster Pujari, fired five rounds outside Morani's bungalow in suburban Juhu. No one was injured, but the act was to instill fear in Morani, said police. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Stemcell therapy under RGJAY? NeuroGen BSI StemAsia dedicated to neuro rehabilitation and stem cell therapy wants to register itself under the government scheme to widen the reach of stemcell therapy MUMBHAI Vikas Sabnis

tatistics state that more than 41 lakh people are suffering from some or the other incurable neurological disorders in Maharashtra of which 10 to 15 lakh might be from Mumbai. For these patients, stemcell therapy is said to be the only a ray of hope because at some point in time, doctors as well as families of the patients give up hope. But with stemcell therapy coming at a cost that might be not be affordable for many, NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute (BSI) – StemAsia at Navi Mumbai has sent a request to include their name in the list of hospitals empanelled under the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY), to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This request made in a letter dated June 24, 2014 states that NeuroGen BSI - StemAsia, which is Maharashtra’s first dedicated neuro rehabilitation and stem cell therapy centre should be registered under the RGJAY. This centre helps in the treatment of patients affected with incurable neurological disorders

Dr Alok Sharma like autism, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, cerebral ataxia, head injury, mental retardation, dementia, injuries to the brain and spine due to infections, genetic and degenerative neurological disorders, motor neuron disease, multiplesclerosis and neuromuscular disorder. Dr Alok Sharma, Director, NeuroGen and head of department, neurosurgery at the BMC-run Sion

hospital said, “Since 2008, I have treated around 600 patients at my centre with muscular dystrophy using stem cell therapy and they have shown amazing improvement. From the point of them having no hope of survival, they have come to becoming people who are full of life filled with hope and optimism. Several cases of autism have shown improvement with the help of stem cell therapy but the fact that people are not able to avail of it because of cost factor, is sad.” “Majority of the patients approaching our centre are from the interiors of Maharashtra are interested in undergoing stem cell therapy but are unable to do so as they lack the appropriate financial means,” he added. Currently, at Sion hospital, stem cell therapy is being done at no cost but at private centres one sitting might cost around Rs 2 lakh and the number of sittings required might range from one to three, informed Dr Sharma. Vibhuti Bhatt, President, StemCare Foundation and Trustee, Stem Care Society said, “With more than

41 lakh people in the state suffering from one of the incurable neurological diseases, stem cell therapy, the only option with them to improve their condition, has to be made accessible with cost not being a deterrent. And the RGJAY is the best way to make sure that people who need this therapy but can’t afford it, are able to make benefit from it. This will be very beneficial to the patients of incurable neurological diseases.” Till date, NeuroGen BSI has helped 2,000 patients from over 33 countries, with majority of them showing improvements that helped them better their quality of life. It has also published 29 scientific papers in several medical journals and have published six books. They, currently have a waiting list of over 1,000 patients. Confirming that the state has received the proposal from NeuroGen BSI StemAsia, State health minister Suresh Shetty said, “We are scrutinising the proposal and a decision will be taken after it is analysed thoroughly.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

nease amongst the allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)Shiv Sena led Mahayuti persists with Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty and BJP state president Devendra Fadnavis sorting out the seat sharing agreement. However, a miffed Republican Party of India (Athawale faction) president and MP Ramdas Athawale has asked BJP-Sena leaders to sort out their respective seat sharing. He added that if the dominant Mahayuti partners gave the RPI-A a raw deal then it will have to decide on

Raju Shetty whether to continue with their alliance with BJP-Sena. Sources in the state BJP disclosed that talks with Shetty and Swabhimani

Sanghatna leader Sadabhau Khot were cordial and both have expressed satisfaction on the seats being offered to them. Sources added that by all accounts, the four Mahayuti allies – SSS, RPI-A, SS, Vinayak Mete's Shiv Sangram are likely to be allocated not more than 25 Assembly seats between them. Bulk of seats demanded by Shetty, Khot and Mete are from the BJP quota while the bulk of seats demanded by RPI-A are from the Sena quota. Athawale further stated that the RPI-A will not contest on Sena-BJP symbols in the ensuing Assembly elections. He warned that if the SenaBJP did not allocate more

seats then the RPI-A will contest alone and ensure defeat of all. Later in the evening, Athawale called on senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse at his official residence near Mantralaya. Later speaking to newspersons at the state party office, Fadnavis while commenting upon the spate of decisions taken by the ruling Congress-NCP alliance government since January this year said that these will be reviewed by the new Mahayuti government. According to official sources, the state government in the last eight months has taken 4,755 decisions in all with maximum decisions - 1,072 being taken in last August alone.

Rescued children sent back to their homes 95 minor slave labourers who were rescued from a fishing firm in Taloja were kept at Dongri Children's Home for two months By Santia Dudi

A

fter almost two months' long stay at Dongri Children's Home, all the 95 minors were finally handed over to their respective families and the state Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Two months after the rescue operation conducted at Meenakshi Fishing Company alias Ulka Sea Foods, Taloja, Panvel, 97 minor slave labourers were rescued and 95 of them were put up at Dongri Children's Home. The rescue operation was con-

ducted by the NGO, Indian Rescue Mission (IMR) with the help of the local police. IMR had earlier accused the Dongri Children's Home of not treating the minors properly. The NGO quoted some of the girls who were staying at the children's home to back up the allegations. Also there was no surety about the number of kids released and even the process of verification before the kids were handed over to their respective parents. Hazel Lobo, volunteer of IMR said, “There was no

transparency about anything. There was no clarity about the verification process which is mandatory before the children are handed over. The children were being treated like commodities and everybody was behaving like packers and movers passing kids from one place to another.” She further added, “What are we doing as adults, NGOs, government shelter homes, CWCs, labour and child protection department and society as a whole? What are we doing to ensure the safety and rehabilitation at all

levels?” Preeti (21), another vounteer at IMR who was involved in the case from the day the kids were rescued told ADC, “I am glad that all the kids went back to their homes. In the beginning there were issues at the shelter home but later the condition improved.” S S Jadhav, superintendent of Dongri Children's Home, said, “All the kids are handed over to the correct people. This is the first time that the rescued kids reached their homes in such a short span of time otherwise usually it takes months to trace the parents or to hand over the kids to the respective state authorities.”

AAP’s broomstick M will not sweep much in Delhi A

AM Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas who had contestedthe Lok Sabha elections and lost is now all praise for Mr. Narendra Modi. He publicly declared his high calibre qualities that went to make him a great leader. Evidently Vishwas is sending a message to Mr. Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). There are other top leaders in the AAP who are strongly critical of party chief Arvind Kejriwal. One of them says he is autocratic and that he does not believe in democracy. They are finding fault with his ways of functioning. One of the main reasons for their loss of faith in Arvind Kejriwal is his fast dwindling popularity. When the party's men went around Delhi just before the last assembly elections, waving long brooms, they attracted a lot of sympathetic response. The situation appears to have changed now. They have seen through the AAP's game. The broom -- the election symbol -- is only a gimmick. Quite a few leaders appear to have made up their minds to quit the party. The BJP appears to be quite confident about getting the required number -- only five -- from other parties. The video charge made against the BJP member of the assembly is probably not baseless. The fact that the governor of Delhi has asked the President to call the largest party in the House to form the government indicates further that in all probability the BJP will muster majority support and form the government in Delhi. It seems AAP's broomstick will not sweep much in Delhi.

ODI watchers saw it coming. The Prime Minister’s three-month silence was simply the lull before the storm. The dam burst on the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15. Modi the showman is back in full flow. Rolling the drums and playing the flute in Japan was just the beginning. We had barely got our breath back when he materialized on television screens across the country schmoozing with school kids. The Congress can carp and whine all it wants but it can barely hide its trepidation over the manner in which Narendra Modi has swamped the main Opposition party with the one skill for which L.K. Advani publicly commended him. “I see him (Modi) as a brilliant event manager,’’ the BJP veteran once said. Even as the Congress scrambles for ways to stop him, Modi seems to be on a roll. He’s got Chinese President Xi Jinping to flaunt in midSeptember. Then he flies off to Washington to erase the humiliation of being denied a US visa because of the 2002 riots in Gujarat. US President Barack Obama may want to cut out the hype but Modi will play the visit with everything he’s got. The highlight is his address to a 20,000-strong crowd of NRIs at Madison Square Garden in New York. You can bet the US will have never seen a political event like this outside of a presidential campaign. With September out of the way, Modi swings into poll season here. October and November will be dominated by his campaign for the Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and J&K assembly polls. He will ride the good news from these elections into December when once again, he will strut on the world stage. He dressed up his swearing-in ceremony with a gathering of SAARC leaders. Now he’s invited leaders from almost the entire African continent for the India-Africa Forum Summit in December. Watch Big Brother in action on that platform. Vladimir Putin from Russia comes next. That takes Modi into the centenary celebrations of Gandhi’s return to India. The Father of the Nation came back from South Africa on January 9, 1915 and thus began the historic events that led to the ouster of the British. Vajpayee had earmarked the date as 'Pravasi Divas'. Modi’s plans for that red letter event are top secret but preparations have already begun. His flawlessly executed election campaign should have tipped off his opponents that Modi is a master at creating mega events and

Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi echoed each other in condemning Swamy’s remarks. They accused him of being antiTamil. In fact, Swamy has lit a fire in Tamil Nadu with the BJP state unit also protesting against his remarks. The BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan said such comments were spoiling the efforts of the party and the central government to resolve the problems of Tamil fisherfolk. Jayalalithaa is particularly upset because she has received reports that Swamy has visited Sri Lanka three times in the three months since the BJP government assumed office. Those who know her, say she believes that the visits took place at Modi’s behest and she is wondering what game is being played by New Delhi. Tamil newspapers have even specu-

Knowledge is intellect, the other is wisdom K

NOWLEDGE has two aspects. One knowledge is what one gathers by learning the names and forms of this life. That cannot satisfy this appetite. It is only a stepping-stone to it. This outer learning only helps one to come to the inner learning, but the inner learning is quite different from the outer learning. How is it learned? It is learned by studying the self. One finds that all the knowledge one strives after and all that exists to study, is all in oneself. Therefore one finds a kind of universe in oneself, and by the study of the self one comes to that knowledge for which the soul hungers. In order to get that knowledge one must try to meditate and to dive into the sea of knowledge which cannot be taught by study. In this way one distinguishes two aspects of knowledge: one aspect of knowledge is intellect, the other aspect is wisdom. Therefore a wise man

is not necessarily a clever man, nor a clever man a wise man. Then there is the question of happiness. A person thinks that when his friends are kind to him, when people respond to him, or when he gets money, then he will be happy. But that

MATTER & SPIRIT is not the way to become happy: sometimes it proves the opposite. For lack of happiness makes him blame others, believing they are standing in the way of his becoming happy. DVANI loyalists are on a desperate lookout for a respectable berth for the veteran BJP leader who was dropped recently along with Murli Manohar Joshi from the party’s top apex decision making body, the Parliamentary Board. One suggestion that made the rounds recently was to accommodate him as president of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The previous incumbent was Karan Singh of the Congress whose tenure ended last month. The ICCR is an autonomous body affiliated with the External Affairs Ministry. The appointing authority is External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who is among the few remaining senior BJP leaders still loyal to L.K. Advani. But despite her best efforts, Modi vetoed the proposal. It looks like the old warhorse will have to be content with the toothless margdarshak mandal that was recently created as a retirement home for BJP veterans. heart is not living, then there is no happiness there. Sometimes the heart is not fully alive but only partly. At the same time it expects life from the other heart. But the real life of the heart is to live independently in its own happiness and that is gained by spiritual attainment, by digging deep into one's own heart. The one who has found his peace within himself may be in a cave of the mountain or among the crowd, yet in every place he will experience peace. What generally happens is that in order to get peace we blame the other person who jars upon our nerves. But in reality the true peace can come only by being so firm against all influences around us that nothing can disturb us. Now, how it can be gained. As I have said, the first thing is to accomplish the object which is standing before one immediately. However small it is, it does not matter. It is by accomplishing it that one gains power. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Kashmir is a part of India. Any issue concerning any part of India should be addressed by the Centre and not by any separatist group. These separatists are free to leave the country and migrate to any other country, but they do not have the right to invite a country for talks. Kashmir separatists who deal with Pakistan directly are nothing but traitors who must be tried for sedition and put behind bars. Enough is enough. taxed heavily and, in all honesty, they are completely forgotten after their retirement from service or when they turn old. The government in India even does not come to their rescue when they have no one to take care of them in their old age, as it is in the case of Western countries. In India, the ministers who are hale and hearty roam about freely in air-conditioned cars and dine daily at five-star restaurants on the common man’s hard-earned money, which is paid as taxes to the government every month.

THE Supreme Court has come down heavily on the Centre's affidavit for its 'Clean Ganga' exercise. The court has asked for the government’s stage-wise strategy to be presented in three weeks. The Ganga is a mighty, flowing river and attempting to clean it will be a gargantuan task with a lot of strong spiritual sentiments attached to it, so naturally the court is concerned. The court has also offered to issue appropriate directions for the removal of the polluting industries on its banks. Considering the problems that our own Mithi River has been posing to the government all these years, the Centre will do well to accept the Apex Court's timely offer and come out with a realistic plan for keeping the Ganga clean.

Most of the waste-material was collected from the immersion points, Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu beach and Dadar Chowpatty being prominent among them. Prakash Jaardan Patil, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (solid waste management) said, "Most of the waste collected from the immersion points is bio-degrad-

able, which consisted of flowers, coconuts and food items. We have sorted the waste and sent it for dumping and decomposition in Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds.” He said that the quantity of waste during Ganesh immersion from across the city weighed in at 9,321 metric tonnes. Workers from the civic-body along with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), students and local volunteers collected the waste from Girgaum, Dadar, Mahim, Juhu, Versova, Marve and Aksa beaches and also from other parts of the city after the last day of immersion. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Messy Matters Mira-Bhayandar generates 750 MT Garbage on immersion day By Suresh Golani

TRAFFIC AWARENESS: Staffers of the LIC of India’s Mumbai Divisional Office No.4 celebrated the 58th anniversary of LIC with a ‘Traffic Awareness’ campaign in various parts of the city last week. They held camps educating motorists and commuters at traffic junctions in the city.

T

he final Ganesh immersion processions on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, generated an astronomical quantity of garbage amounting to around 750 metric tonnes (MT) in just 12 hours on Monday in the Mira

Bhayandar region. This quantity is more than double the amount of garbage generated by the twin-city on usual days, which is around 350 MT. The most affected areas were the approach roads leading to the major immersion points in the twin-city as hundreds of stalls had sprung up serving free cold-drinks, buttermilk, tea, pop-corn, vada-pav and other eatables to devotees. “The entire roads were littered with leftovers-mostly non-recyclable plastic glasses. It was a herculean task for our personnel to clear the mess,” said deputy municipal commissioner Dr Sambaji Panpatte.

But, be sure that this is what you want to pursue, before you take up a career in PR as Gitika thinks that it is an unforgiving profession. “It is a difficult business. Unless you love the job, you’ll be miserable — there’s no being indifferent here! I would very strongly recommend that anyone considering a career in PR, take some time during their college days to intern at a reputed PR firm, as most PR college courses in India are very theoretical and don’t give students a real sense of the field,” she tells us.

hurdles. “I started my career abroad, so initially it wasn’t too difficult. I worked with a chef who was a lady herself, which made things simpler. However, it did get difficult when I got back to India, because men who worked under me didn’t like to take orders from me. I wasn’t accepted as easily as I was abroad. I had even reached a stage where I wanted to quit and give up! But, I have been blessed with good mentors and people around me who have helped me stay motivated and have never let me give up.” We asked Kshama if she had any tips for women looking to make a breakthrough and she surprised us with her simple, but on-point answer, “The industry is a difficult place to be in, irrespective of whether you are a man or a woman. We are constantly faced with high levels of mental and physical pressure. A woman entering this field should be prepared for tedious, long hours and I think we are to blame, for why we don’t see many women in the kitchen.” According to her, the best way to approach the industry is to ignore that it is a maledominated industry. “Even if you are knee-deep in work, remember that you don’t need a man to do it better or faster. Remember that you are physically and mentally strong enough to be able to do it yourself, and do it well,” she adds.

PerformING artS Off late, theatre in Mumbai, like a phoenix rising from its ashes, has been getting increasingly popular. We speak to theatre personalities Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal and Divya Palat, who give us a behind-thescenes insight into theatre.

LotS of DIScIPLINe It should go without saying that discipline is something that is very important when it comes to theatre. Mahabanoo shares an anecdote that demonstrates the importance of self-discipline. She says, “[In London] the discipline was something we totally lacked here. I was clearly told that if I was late twice in a row, I should not bother coming the next day. But even there, the money for the rehearsal period just about covered weekly expenses. Also, there was an air-tight contract that stated that there was to be no drinking during the performance, no eating after dressing for the role, lest you damage the costume, to be present 3 hours before showtime... But, I worked with two of the greats of British theatre/ films — Prunella Scales and Richard Johnson.” Remember to be realistic and not to expect the world. Mahabanoo explains that theatre is not a highly paying field. She adds, “You have to have plan B ready, if work is not prolific.” There are a few more tips that Mahabanoo has for someone looking to kick-start a career in theatre. She adds, “Acting is a very serious and timeconsuming profession. Please, please, please don’t give up your studies to take this up full-time. Do get some training. Join acting classes, learn voice control (one of the most important requirements in this profession) and watch good plays on stage and on the internet.” Avoid falling into the

eNtrePreNeUrS trap of believing that theatre will be a stepping stone to Bollywood. People in the film industry will rarely watch your plays, unless you are a celebrity.

Want to start your own company? See what these two entrepreneurs think you should keep in mind.

Be PaSSIoNate Being passionate about what you do is important in any field, but when it comes to theatre, you need to really showcase your passion. Divya explains, “It doesn’t matter that you are a woman — be prepared to change light bulbs, move sets and get your hands dirty. We have all worked our way up and theatre requires tonnes of hard work. No job is too big or too small to do on stage.” The following couplet from Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem, If — ‘If you can keep your head about you; When all around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you!; If you can make one heap of all your winnings; And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss; And lose, and start again at your beginnings; And never breathe a word about your loss’ is what theatre teaches you every single day, according to Divya. Your passion will also help you with the competition that you will face. “A lot of people assume that theatre is an easier profession, but there’s a lot of competition and theatre actors have to work for years to get recognition,” she says. You also need to understand the various aspects that go along with staging a play. Divya explains, “There are contracts, halls need to be booked and some actors need to be booked months in advance too! You can’t just saunter in with a good play and expect it to get produced. Halls are expensive and advertising even more so — understand your expenses, understand what a show entails and that it’s going to take a while to get your first role or first show off!”

faSHIoN Be prepared to work non-stop and deal with constant competition in fashion.

workING 24/7 We can’t think of a better way to explain why you need to be on your toes 24/7, than Neeta’s story of the climax outfit of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. “The outfit was constructed overnight. We had to open retail stores at 2.30am to get fabrics, get them embroidered and tailored and take the outfit on set for a 9am shoot!”says Neeta. “When I started work as a professional, I was treated like any other technician, and had to work to fulfil that commitment day and night. Everything needs to be achieved in a hurry,” she adds. Neeta also has women-specific tips, saying, “Power dressing helps you feel confident. Wear closed, comfortable shoes as you have to be on the move, and focus only on bettering your work.”

Fancy a jab at the canvas? Take a look at what to expect if you’re picking the field of fine arts.

Priyadarshini Rao tells us, “People think that designers have it easy. But, you have to carry your own suitcases, stitch or alter garments and also have to look composed after the show!” As far as being a woman in the field of fashion is concerned, she tells us, “I guess it is always a bit of a challenge, when the woman is the boss. You need to be careful while dealing with tailors and masters. It’s important to be assertive, but not dominating. Also, dressing conservatively while visiting weavers, embroiderers and rural areas is a wise thing to do. Designers should get a signature in place, a good fit and finish before starting their own brand.”

PerfecteD art Artist Rouble Nagi, advises new entrants to be patient and honest. She explains, “As an artist, you have to be brave enough to showcase your vision despite the outcome. An artist has to believe in herself and keep creating with conviction. Success does not have a formula and your career is the same, it will take time and effort, but I can guarantee you that you will be successful, provided you are honest with your work.” She also adds, especially for women, “Women should not think that art is all about sitting in a room comfortably and painting, followed by hosting an exhibition. I spend most of my days in my workshop and on-site. So, it is a tough job. Preparing for an exhibition is almost like making a film.”

PUBLISHING Publishing is not a very publicised field, but it’s a very important one. Take a look at how to make it happen.

DaBBLING IN maNy fIeLDS Divya Dubey, publisher of the Earthen Lamp Journal and editor at Authorz Coracle, also teaches creative writing and conducts online workshops. She tells us, “Too many changes are happening simultaneously in the publishing industry, with ebooks and self-publishing avenues quickly gaining popularity. Online stores have impacted sales at physical bookshops, which have unfortunately stopped stocking too many books. So, there are multi-layered problems, as well as opportunities. You should first gauge the demands of the market and then decide what sphere you’d like to work in.” When we asked Divya to give us some tips for women, she was quick to give us some solid advice. “When you start out,

Fitness is on the rise and Shital Nihar, founder of Inch by Inch — The Body Temple, says that there is fierce competition in the industry and suggests you prepare to fight it out, if you intend to last in this industry. In terms of the dynamics of this field, Shital explains, “You need good referrals and testimonials to get a solid client base, but you also need clients to get the testimonials you will use in your referral system. There are several ways to boost your client base over time. I know of a trainer who volunteered a few hours every week at his church. He used these individuals in his referral system and also used their testimonials in his marketing strat egies.” She advises women in this industry to be strong, telling us, “Some fitness consultants work directly with people to help them with exercises and routines. Others have a planning and management role. This is an exciting consulting career path with several opportunities and it’s also a great job for people who want to moonlight after regular jobs.”

BakING maGIc Theobroma is a name to reckon with. If you haven’t tried their Blueberry Cheesecake or Millionaire Brownie, then you have clearly missed out on a spectacular gastronomic experience. Kainaz Messman Harchandrai, the founder of Theobroma, tells us, “Competition is intense and there is always something new opening up just around the corner. You need to innovate to create an interest in your product; no one can rest on their laurels.” She states that in her business, people are only interested in the product or service that you provide. Hence, there is no difference whether you are a man or a woman. Kainaz explains, “Focus on customers, your products and services because every mistake is magnified and thrown back at you. Everything else you will learn in due course and in your own time.” However, she advises women not to over think or doubt themselves. She a dds, “Women often worry too much. All you need to do is get on with the job; work hard and things are automatically going to fall in place.”

you have to remember that you will be dealing with people of all kinds, some of whom will be rude or difficult, especially because you are a woman. Some even try to intimidate or bully you. Unfortunately, this still happens, even today. But no matter what, you need to hold your own. It’s important to have reliable advisers and not get swayed by different opinions.” In case you thought you’re immediately going to rub noses with literary stars and live a high-flyer’s life, bear in mind Divya’s parting words to us, “I think the most common myth surrounding the publishing industry is that all publishers and authors mint money. They don’t. How we wish we did. How many JK Rowlings have you ever come across?”

HeaD HoNcHo We also spoke to Amrita Chowdhury, country head and publishing director at Harlequin India. Echoing Divya, Amrita says, “Publishing is in the middle of a lot of change; new ideas and new types of writing are being showcased every day. Distribution and marketing are playing a key part in the sales of a book,” she tells us. When we asked her what she feels are the most common mistakes that women make while starting out in publishing, Amrita told us, “Women need to be able to speak about themselves. We tend to be conscientious workers,

working hard and forgetting to ask for things, when it is actually important.” If you are in another field, but are too scared to take the plunge, Amrita says, “Don’t be afraid to experiment. People change their career trajectories all the time. I moved from engineering, to management consulting, to publishing. So, do the things that you love and give you a chance to learn. Also, given the buzz around television, social media and gaming platforms, publishing is a growing industry in India, one of the few countries where there are still opportunities.”

Yamini Walia talks to Anjali Malhotra about her brand 10 am and what inspired her to set it up

creativity A

Is your design process different from other brands? My designs stem from my gut and from what I like. They originate from things around me, things I’ve seen and things I’ve picked up over the years. There isn’t much research that goes into them. I put myself in the shoes of the client and hope that if it is something I love, they will appreciate it too. If you look at our work, you will find a very varied mix of quirky and sophisticated items.

t just 23-years-old, Anjali Malhotra has set up her own brand, 10 am. She tells us that the label houses a variety of products to suit everyone’s tastes, whether people are looking for interesting home décor to do up their living or office space, on the lookout for great gifts, or are shopping for an occasion, festival or wedding. Read on as she tells us more about her quirky brand and what she has lined up for the future. Tell us a little more about your brand, 10 am. At 10 am, we aim to provide unique, creative and thoughtfully designed lifestyle products that can be used in a variety of settings. Ranging from personalised cube lamps, fun coasters and funky wall art to vintage clocks, innovative breakfast tables, organisers and laptop pads, every product is designed with relentless effort, catering to the style and sensibility of a vast range of customers. Many of our products are up-cycled or handmade and every single piece is crafted with a lot of love! What do you think makes 10 am unique? We customise products for our clients. Whether it’s a single piece or hundreds of pieces, we don’t insist on a minimum order to customise. So, we can cater to teenagers and corporate clients at the same time. Since our designs don’t follow a singular theme, we think that everyone will find something that suits their taste. Also, the fact that we have numerous products and are willing to customise helps, as every individual will find something, even if they don’t have the same taste and style as everyone else. We also work with our clients in a stepby-step manner, to understand what they want, give them suggestions for products/ gifts, show them design options before production and so on. This personal attention goes a long way, as clients feel like we care and that we’re putting our heart and soul into making the perfect product!

depending on whom the product is for. For youngsters buying a laptop pad, the artwork is mostly funky, fun and colourful, whereas for a grownup who is buying the same product, the artwork would typically be more subtle and sophisticated.

What inspired you to start your own brand at such a young age? Art, craft and design have been an integral part of my life since I was a young child. I’ve always loved to draw, paint, create and innovate. I held several exhibitions with my friends all through my school years, where we sold our handmade craft products, the earnings of which we gave to different charities and causes. I studied art in school and continued to do supplementary courses while I was in college studying mass media. After college, I interned and worked with a PR and events company and then with a publishing house as a graphic designer for a few months. But, the urge to start something of my own was persistent. Any interesting consumer experiences that you would like to share with us? Each and every consumer experience is unique in its own way. Almost every client who purchases 10 am products as gifts for their loved ones — whether it’s a friend, family member or partner, puts in so much thought, planning and effort to get the perfect gift. The feedback we get from our clients, the happy text messages saying that the recipient loved the gift, the fact that we put a smile on someone’s face — this is what really motivates us and pushes us to excel and better ourselves every day. What product or collection has garnered the maximum response? It’s hard to pick just one product, but our cube lamp is definitely one of our most popular products. It has been purchased as a gift for a child as young as 5-years-old, to a grandfather for his 90th birthday! It’s a superb gift and works well across all age groups, for both genders! Besides being a unique product which is also extremely useful, the fact that it can be customised to the tee with photographs/ text/ colours to suit the occasion and receiver preferences, makes it a product that is appreciated and loved by all. What are your future plans? Right now, I’m just going with the flow and luckily, things seem to be falling into place. I try not to think too much about the future and enjoy the creative experience that each day brings with it. My objective is for my brand to be unique and stand for creativity, quality and integrity, which I think will help us go a long, long way.

PReeTi deSAi

HumA quReSHi

We hate Preeti’s pinched expression and her makeup is unimpressive, but this look is not all bad. The boots, jeans and top work well for a biker-chic look, we just wish she had chosen a different jacket.

We usually love how well-turned-out Huma Qureshi is, but this look is a big, fat no-no! From the powdery eyebrows, too-dark lipstick and limp hair, to the mismatched brogues, what looks like a college satchel and an unimpressive top and jeans, she looks like she got dressed in the dark!

We love this simple top from Kook-N-Keech, available at www.myntra.com. The pepper shaker motif is super cute, without being over-the-top. Price `499

The colour of her outfit could have washed her out, but Kalki managed to pick a combination with hints of copper and gold so that she looks like a porcelain doll instead. The pretty brocade neck and simple sandals make the look work, but we’re not fans of the gold box clutch.

kAlki kOeCHliN

These powder matte shades from Chambor claim to be non-drying, while remaining creamy matte. The Desert Rose is a strong, dark brownrose shade that’s a little much for daily wear but works well as an evening colour under a lip gloss or just worn plain. The pigments in the lipstick are thick enough for one swipe to coat your lips with a strong colour and although the bullet tip makes it easy to apply thinner swipes, a flatter tip would have made the lipstick more convenient to apply. The only grouse that I have with this lipstick is that it doesn’t last as long as it claims to, wearing off in a couple of hours, especially if you eat or drink. Price `575 Where Retail outlets in the city Rating ***

Preppy perfect The preppy, nerdy look is back in style and if you thought that food-printed clothes wouldn’t lend themselves well to this look, think again! Simply pick pieces in darker, more subtle shades and stay away from bright, bold hues. Opt for a top with a small-print and pair it with slacks, brogues, a top-knot and a leather sling-bag for a look that screams nerdy chic.

Cupcake story

We love this deep purple dress from www.asos.com. The vintage cupcake print is super cute and wearable. Price `5,332

Night out Food-printed clothes may work best at casual lunch dates, but for a night out, you should try wearing a dress with a peplum, food-print detail, or pair bold, food-printed trousers with a bright, plain top. The look may not be conventional partywear, but you will certainly have all eyes on you. Hold back If you are wearing a food-printed top, refrain from accessorising your look with earrings or necklaces. They will only crowd the look and take attention away from your food-printed masterpiece. Similarly, pair printed bottoms with neutral footwear. If both pieces are printed, it distracts the eye and lowers the impact. Tone it down If you think that your food-printed clothes are too loud, tone down your look by layering. Either wear a plain, black or white, button-down shirt over the top, or wear a neutral cardigan to make the look more subtle. When in doubt, pair your printed piece with black to avoid an over-thetop look.

TWiNkle bAjPAi

We usually love stripes, but Twinkle has not pulled this dress off! The kitten heels make her look a little dowdy, ruining the gorgeous midi dress. The sleeves are a little ill-fitting and if she’d pushed her hair back, she would have been able to pull it off better. Better luck next time, Twinkle!

CHAmbOR POWdeR mATTe liPSTiCk

Girly-girl This look is extremely fuss-free and works well for a casual day out. Simply pair a cute, cupcake or watermelon themed top with a highwaisted skater skirt or solid-coloured shorts. Pair the look with flip-flops or sandals and a cute bag, for a look that is both girly and chic.

Do up 60% of your room with the most preferred pattern, 30% of the room with the next best pattern and use the last pattern, as an accent, in only 10% of your décor. Remember to incorporate the three patterns across a range of scales. For example, pair fine polka dots, with large diagonal checks and a mediumscale chevron. don’t: Remember not to pick all three prints of the same size, because if you do so, none will catch the eye. Also, don’t pick more or less than three prints. If you pick only two prints, the idea of intentionally mixing prints won’t come across clearly and if you pick more than three prints, it will overwhelm the room.

an experiment If you want to go all out, get this printed wallpaper from www.fabfurnish.com and match it with this football-themed bean bag from www.coolbeanbags.in. price `1,849 (bean bag) & `2,999 (wallpaper) curtains. don’t: Don’t try mixing and matching with too many colours. Stick to one colour and use shades and tones of it to do up a room, or use a complementary colour as an accent. We love blue & white, purple & lime green and mustard & red, if you are looking to deviate from using just one colour.

the larger scheme of things

Once you feel comfortable with mixing and matching small elements such as cushions, Keep colours constant pillows and bedspreads, move on to large If you aren’t sure whether the prints that you are using will work together as a whole, try reams of fabric and experiment with printed using a constant colour throughout the room. rugs, wallpapers, sofas and foot stools. We For example, pick a solid blue bedspread and recommend sticking to fine and small prints accentuate it with white and blue cushions, in single, subtle colours. don’t: Steer clear of clashing prints. If you all bearing a different print, but in the same shade of blue, along with a runner in the have a chevron throw pillow, complement it same shade of blue. You can also tie the entire by adding a rug bearing a small chevron look together with blue and white printed print. Similarly, if you have curtains with a >> Matching the colours of your bedsheet and pillow cases is a great way to mix and match prints

micro polka-dotted print, play them up by adding a footstool with larger polka dots in the same colour. But, don’t place a polka dotted footstool on a chevron rug!

Keep florals handy If you can’t find a third print to make up your trio, rely on florals. If your décor is brick-red and mustard coloured, a simple, white, cushion cover with a single flower bearing the two colours is all you need to bring the whole look together. Similarly, if you are experimenting with geometric prints on your upholstery, choose a mid-sized, floral wallpaper as your third element. don’t: Unless the print consists of a single flower, don’t pick large floral prints. Stick to small and mid-sized florals to prevent them from overpowering your décor.

complement the colour Want red décor? Pick these curtains from www.fabfurnish.com and this matching vase from www.craftsvilla.com. price `999 (curtains) & `3,500 (vase)

other accents To bring your mixed prints to life, accentuate the colours that you have used with a few tidbits. For example, if you have opted for a grey and turquoise themed living room, accentuate this palette by adding a few grey and/ or turquoise coloured books on the bookshelf, a turquoise vase, or a grey figurine. don’t: Stay away from adding other colours to the mix! If you are sticking to a grey and turquoise look, maroon accents are a bad idea. So, pack away décor items in clashing colours for another day, when you choose to switch up your décor.

hether you’ve fallen in love again, or are looking for a companion, there are several reasons to remarry if your first attempt at happily-ever-after didn’t work out. One thing that holds true for second marriages though, is that you’ll need a greater degree of commitment to make it work. We’re not trying to discourage or dissuade you of course, but you need to be aware! From financial problems, to struggling to become a part of the family that he already has, several factors will prevent your relationship from being in the honeymoon phase that is definitive of a new relationship. So, keep these tips in mind to ensure that it’s all smooth sailing.

MaKe a clean bReaK This is one of the most important points — don’t rush into a second marriage with the baggage of your previous relationship. You need to be absolutely sure that you are over your ex and that the memories of your previous relationship won’t affect your marriage. The same holds true for your partner; no matter who popped the question, make sure that you have a heart-to-heart where you discuss your feelings towards your respective ex-partners. Make it clear to him that unless the emotional baggage of his previous marriage has been dealt with, you cannot think of getting married.

DealinG with the chilDRen It’s very important to ensure that your children (or his), aren’t the ones who suffer because of your second marriage. If you have children from your first marriage, you will need to assure them that their step-father isn’t an intrusion in their lives. You also need to help them understand why you decided to remarry. Similarly, if your husband has children from his previous marriage, let your partner deal with them and don’t try to force yourself upon them. Don’t try to win them over with gifts and/ or too much affection — you’d be surprised to find how easily children will see through your actions. Whether they are your children or his, listening to them and acknowledging their fears can go a long way in convincing them that they are still going to be loved and looked after.

An easy way to go about this is to set a deadline by which time all matters related to bank accounts, wills, marriage certificates, ration cards, utility bills and other legal documents should be taken care of.

It would be wrong to expect his children to call you ‘mummy’ or to force your children to call your partner ‘dad.’ Similarly, don’t expect your family to instantly warm up to the idea of you being married again. « DeAr grAce, i hAve A problem... Dear Grace,

I love my boyfriend to bits, but he has a drinking problem. Every time we go out drinking, he ends up overdoing it. Not only is this starting to bother me, I am also worried because I don’t think it’s healthy for him. When he is sober, he makes tall promises about drinking within limits, but after a few drinks, there is nothing I can do to stop him and if I try too hard, we end up fighting. I see a future with him, but not with his drinking problem! I don’t know

what to do. Please help. — Richa Khuranna, Santacruz Dear Richa, You need to put your foot down. There is only one way you’re going to be able to deal with this — by being firm, even if you end up fighting. Though we don’t usually recommend controlling your partner’s habits and actions, with something as serious as this, extreme measures are necessary. Sit down with him, (when he is sober) and tell him that unless he

starts being proactive about dealing with his problem, you don’t see a future with him. At the same time, you should understand that he is probably living in denial about his drinking habit, and so, you need to help him accept that he has a problem. Ask friends and family for help if you don’t think you can manage him and his drinking habit on your own. Remember that you will need to be determined to see this through. NSE India: S&P CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (September 11, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Wednesday (September 10, 2014) a net 58.85 points (0.72%) and closed at the 8094 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 8135 points level and that level itself was the high of the session. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.05 p.m. The index then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 8082 points level at 2.17 p.m. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 54 points and closed below the psychologically important 8100 points level. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 33 were losers, while 17 stocks closed in the green. Some buying was witnessed in realty and power stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables, oil & gas and FMCG stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 8.21%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 904 were gainers, 695 were losers and 28 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). However, such signals are considered invalid in the over-bought zone. RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a negative bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7816 points level. The next support is at the 7615 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8138 points level. The next resistance is at the 8246 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8104 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8072; Support (2) = 8050; Resistance (1) = 8126; Resistance (2) = 8258. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a small black body candle. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index has dropped below its 5 day’s moving average. Both these indicate a negative bias. However, the index is above its 15, 25 and 200-day’s moving average and all the three averages are rising and also positively trended. Further the velocity parameters continue to be positively trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 8014 point’s level.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is flat while the Market Index is falling. No signal here.

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Has dropped below its 5-day average (at 8120) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 8014) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7900) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6898) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Trade Pacts Should Not Restrict Development Policies: UNCTAD

Multilateral agreements should not encourage or push developing countries like India to relinquish policies that support economic development, a report by United Nations body UNCTAD has said. The report said that these pacts often come with stricter commitments which require policymakers to forsake the use of instruments that have proved effective in supporting industrialisation. Developing countries like India should take into account the loss of policy space when engaging in bilateral and regional trade and investment agreements, it has cautioned.

uring 2014-2016; about US$ 92 billion worth patented drugs are expected to go off patent in the USA as compared with US$ 65 billion during 2010-12. The large number of patent expiration in US presents interesting opportunities for Indian generic products manufacturers like Sun Pharmaceuticals, Lupin, Dr. Reddy’s, Cipla and others, believes Care Ratings. Indian companies have built a strong pipeline of products to be sold in the US. During 2013, Indian companies secured 39% of total 400 ANDA approvals from USFDA as against 37% of total 476 ANDA approvals during 2012. Indian companies with strong generic portfolios have been successful in gaining a good foothold in the US pharmaceutical market. Thus, generic manufacturers are leveraging this opportunity by increasing their ANDA filings. Incidentally, ‘Patent Cliff’ is a term used to describe the phenomenon of drugs approaching their patent expiration date, resulting in

steep decline in sales of the branded drug as generics enter the market place and undercut the price, thereby capturing the market share earlier served by the branded drugs. So there is a twin effect of steep fall in patented drugs prices as also flooding of market by generics. Overall “The outlook for the Indian Pharmaceutical industry “remains positive on the back of patent expiries through which the country is expected to gain a larger foothold in the world’s generic market. However, as witnessed in the past, there has been an increase in the number of import alerts issued by the USFDA which has hampered the image of Indian Pharma companies and the supplies from such company’s units were banned. If this continues in the long term, it may hurt the profitability of Indian generic drug producers. Thus, the need of the hour is that Indian firms should make sure the quality standards are adequately met says Care Ratings in a just released report on the sector.. It believes that in the long term, semi-regulated markets like Latin

America, Africa and Asia are likely to offer the next growth avenue for Indian Pharma companies as these markets have high demand for drugs and relatively less stringent regulatory compliance resulting in lower cost of servicing these markets. Out of the total 103 pharma companies rated by CARE, more than 50% are in investment grade category (‘BBB’ or above category; refer the graph below) driven by good profitability metrics, comfortable solvency position and moderate liquidity profile. Additionally, some of the pharma companies are in the high investment grade categories (‘AAA’ and ‘AA’) on account of their wide geographical presence and well-diversified product portfolio. Furthermore, there has been improvement in the credit profile of companies manufacturing highvalue APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) in select therapeutic segments like anti-retrovirals catering to the export market. During FY14, the credit profile of CARE rated pharma companies has broadly remained stable.

L-R Pawel Szuflak, Director, Sales, Service and Marketing, Skoda Auto India and Sudhir Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, Skoda Auto India five-speed manual transmission and a 2.0 TDI/103 kWall-wheel drive fitted as standard mated to a manual six-speed gearbox. The high-pressure direct injection technology system offers optimum performance with great mileage of 17.72 kmpl in the 2 wheel drive 81 kW engine and 17.67 kmpl in the 103 kW all-wheel drive versions.

Skoda India, promising products that are more practical with timeless appeal, extremely high safety standards and the latest technologies. To complement our ongoing model offensive we will focus on the overall ownership experience with the brand and will continue toretain customer satisfaction as top priority in India, he added.

Aneri Vajani plays tomboy

25

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2014

Aneri Vajani has played the role of Paankhi in the daily soap 'Kaali-Ek Punar Avataar' on Star Plus. Now she has been roped for 'Crazy Stupid Ishq' on Channel [V]. After a long wait, she is making her comeback on television and is very excited about it. Currently, she is playing the role of Nisha in Star Plus' new show ‘Nisha Aur Uske Cousins’. We caught up with the bubbly actor to know more about her new show and her career

By Sandeep Hattangadi

How do you relate to the character? What are the similarities you share with Nisha? This role is like a dream because in real life I am just like her. All my friends call me a tomboy. I am always there whenever they need me, just like Nisha.

Tell us something about yourself. I am born and brought in Mumbai, a very typical Gujju-Mumbai girl who loves to travel and who is a complete foodie. How did you get Nisha's role? Did you always want to be an actress? For me, acting was a wild dream that got fulfilled purely by chance. I always fantasised about posing for shutterbugs. But I never really gave it a push. Then one day, a casting director came across my pictures on Facebook and invited me for a screen test, and before I could realise what was happening, I got the role. Since then, life has been a fairy tale for me as I live my dream every day. I'm in love with the fact that I'm busy all day with shoots. In fact, when I'm home on a free day, I feel the pangs to get back to work. Any training/preparation you underwent? We had to go through a very rigorous training. I play a character of a tomboy where I had to work on my body language; my voice modulation and dialogue delivery. The hardest decision was to cut my long hair just for this role. I had to do it to get into the skin of the character. It was very important in a way to do justice to my character of a tomboy. How do you manage to live this character during shoots every day? As I said, I have managed to get through that training and now I am dressing up like the character with my short hair. One good advantage for me is I am a tomboy in real life too. I am

Whom are you close to on the sets? I am close to Heli and Meherzan, my on–screen cousins. I connect with them the best. They treat me like a baby and they are always there whenever I have a bad day. Meherzan makes up a mood by talking about the most random thing and Heli pumps me up by getting me pasta.

not a very girly girl.

What is your equation with your cousins in real life? I am very close to my cousins in real life too. They hold a special place in my life. They are my first friends, first play buddies, rivals and partners in crime. We make it a point that on all the festivals we come together and celebrate it like a big fat Gujarati family.

How do you think 'Nisha Aur Uske Cousins' is going to be different? What does it have to offer the viewers? It’s the first joint family show – which will focus completely on the youngsters, their equation, their troubles and pranks. 'Nisha Aur Uske Cousins' promises to be youth centric, to not be melodramatic, and to be lighthearted and realistic. Cousins are your blood relations but at the same time they are the friends you keep forever, the ones you share your childhood memories and growing up angst with. It is this very relationship that will be highlighted in the show.

How do you feel people will accept or relate to this role and show? I feel Nisha’s role is somewhere very similar to Anjali from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. I think people will love it as it is very real. In many ways Nisha and her cousins represent the Star Plus of today – young, energetic, wanting to break the mould and do something new. They respect Dadaji and their elders but don't always agree with their stereotypical views. The show not only captures the unexplored but extremely interesting dynamics between cousins, but also deals with issues of today's youth and their desire to challenge stereotypes.

I was invited to audition for ‘Comedy Nites’: Aahana Kumra As Dr Taruni, she was one of the scene-stealers in the series ‘Yudh’ (Sony). Aahana Kumra was praised for her histrionic calibre by co-star Amitabh Bachchan. Stalwart theatre-guru Makarand Deshpande calls her a ‘fearless, uninhibited actress who is a director’s delight’. In an exclusive to ADC, the candid Aahana unveils her mystique mask to Chaitanya Padukone

Training under my ‘acting-guru’ Naseeruddin Shah transformed me... In a way that I never imagine, he has instilled discipline and fearlessness in my work.

Since the tense action climax in ‘Yudh’ was a cliff-hanger, I am now…. Ardently wishing and hoping there is a Season-2 very soon.

Enacting the spunky Sarla umpteen times in mentor Makarand Deshpande’s popular play has... Made me realise that there is a global connect with what we speak on stage that can even tend to transform people’s thoughts and lives.

Acting with the legend Amitabh Bachchan-saab, as his ‘laadli beti’ in the TV series ‘Yudh’ is for me... A reality I didn’t even dream of in my wildest dreams. The most touching compliment I got for playing Dr Taruni in ‘Yudh’ is... That I’ve been Mr Bachchan’s most believable daughter-on-screen.

A discreet critical career-twist of mine which hardly anyone knows... Is that I was specially invited to audition for the wife’s (Manju) role in Kapil Sharma’s 'Comedy Nites' show. But I was signed on for ‘Yudh’ at the same time. That I went to actually audition for a singer’s part in Bombay Velvet and Anurag asked me to screen test for ‘Yudh’ instead. Movie directors I am dying to work with... Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya

Sometimes I discard the windcheater while it’s raining because... Like Kajol, I would want to sizzle in a drizzle song and dance sequence humming ‘mere khwabon mein jo aayein’.

Motwane, Anurag Basu, Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali etc.

Heart-throb actors I would love to romance on-screen include… Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and of course, Ranbir Kapoor.

My next acting venture after ‘Yudh’... Will surely be something interesting and different from Taruni.

Had I not been an actress, I would have been... Travelling round the world writing blogs.

ctor Kanwar Dhillon, who plays the lead role in the new TV drama 'Hum Hain Na', says the show is different from the usual 'saas-bahu' stories that dominate the small screen. Kanwar, son of veteran film and TV actor Deep Dhillon, plays the role of a devoted son in the Varanasiset drama. Former 'Bigg Boss' contestant Pratusha Banerjee stars opposite him in the Sony TV's show. “I play the role of Bunty. This guy is the perfect son and friend. After a long time, a male-oriented show is coming on TV and it is very lighthearted. It is different from the typical 'saas-bahu' stories on TV,” Kanwar, who was previously seen in 'Do Dil Ek Jaan’ told PTI.

‘India squash players well set for Asiad medals’

Vishwanath Salian | ADC

Dipika-Joshana set for face-off after controversial Asiad draw By Bharat Sharma

N

EW DELHI: In a violation of the competition rule, a controversial squash singles draw could lead to an "unfortunate" quarterfinal face-off between India's 'golden girls' Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa at the Incheon Asian Games. As per the tournament rule, two players belonging to the same country cannot be drawn in the same half. A similar situation had also arisen during the 2006 Doha Games where Saurav Ghosal beat compatriot Ritwik Bhattacharya to win an assured bronze, which led to allegations of rigging in the draw. "It (draw) is unfortunate but it is what it is. You don't want to play your teammate so early in the competition. We would have had shot at two medals had we were separated in the draw but even then it wasn't a sure shot thing," Chinappa, who com-

Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal during a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday. bined with Pallikal to win a historic gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in August, told PTI today. In the September 19-October 4 Games, 3/4 seed Pallikal is drawn to play her 5/8 seeded teammate Chinappa in the second round, which happens to be the quarterfinals. In this scenario, India will be assured of at least a bronze for reaching the semifinals. But it could have bettered its tally had either of the

player reached the semis from the other half in the draw of 32. "And by the way, we have our first round matches to win before we face each other," the world No.21 Chinappa added. According to the technical handbook for the Games, the squash competition shall be conducted in accordance with the World Squash Federation (WSF) rules and regulations which state "optimum

separation of players of the same nationality to be used e.G. Drawn in different halves of the draw and, if more than two competitors from the same nation, different quarters. Where players are drawn into the same section of a draw they shall be kept apart as far as possible". Two Hong Kong players Annie Au (3/4 seed) and Joey Chan (5/8) also find themselves in the same half of the draw.

MUMBAI: After an impressive show at the Commonwealth Games, former five-time national champion Ritwik Bhattacharya said that he was looking for the Indian contingent to leave a lasting impression by fielding its strongest contingent ever in Incheon for the Asian Games. Bhattacharya who is the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and Women's Squash Association (WSA) representative for Asia said that India will definitely secure medals in squash in the men's and women's team events. “There is no doubt that the Indian team will do exceedingly well and will come back with medals. The men's squad look sound and strong while we can expect Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa to make a mark in the singles. Unlike the Commonwealth Games, there isn't the doubles contest. Also, Saurav Ghosal who missed out in Glasgow should definitely be the front-runner for gold, " said Bhattacharya during the announcement of the JSW Indian Challenger Circuit which will be held in three cities - Jaipur, Mumbai and Chennai and which begins in Jaipur on October 2. Steadfastly still hoping that squash makes it to the Olympics after the failed London bid, the Indian contingent is

leaving no stone unturned to make a mark at the forthcoming Asian Games in Incheon. “We were very hopeful to compete during the London Games, but unfortunately we could'nt do so, but we haven't lost hope. We are targeting the 2020 Olympics which is slated to be held in Tokyo. Squash stands a good chance for making it to the Games, as the Japanese capital has a good following for squash and it is becoming very spectator friendly, which is important to see the light of day,” added Bhattacharya. Commonwealth Games 2014 gold medallist Dipika Pallikal said, “We can win medals in all categories, but it's wrong to say it's going to be easier than the Commonwealth Games. For example there is Nicol David, who is the world no. 1 and favourite for the women's singles title. India are seeded third in both men's and women's team events. Malaysia and Hong Kong will be there but we are capable of doing well. On a good day anything can happen.” She added having a Challenger series tournament will augur well for future squash stars. “I have a sister and she is very interested in playing squash. She will be participating in all four events and I too, would be playing the event in Mumbai and Chennai,” said Pallikal.

It was a question of bread and Hockey India slams Govt for cutting down on support staff butter: Paes on missing Asiad N By Amanpreet Singh

B

ANGALORE: Their commitment to country questioned after a pullout from the Asian Games, India's top tennis players today tried to put their decision in perspective by saying that they had an obligation to earn their "bread and butter". Leading singles player Somdev Devvarman was the first player to pull out of the Asian Games, the dates of which are clashing with many ATP and WTA events on the circuit, where Indian players have a lot of points to defend. Rohan Bopanna followed suit, while Sania Mirza left it to the All India Tennis Association to take a call on the matter. AITA said considering the very important requirements of players, it has decided to respect their request and allow them to play ATP and WTA tournaments so that they can have a respectable opportunity to represent the nation in the World Championships at the end of the year. Somdev was categorical when he reasoned his decision and Sania, who won the US Open mixed doubles title, had left it to the AITA to take a decision whether she should play.

EW DELHI: Hockey India today described the government's decision to exclude its four key support staff, including a coach, from the Asian Games-bound contingent as "distraction", leaving its High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans in a state of "shock". India's national game also had to face the brunt of the government's decision to prune down the Indian contingent for the Incheon Asian Games to 679 from 942 after men's team coach Jude Felix and scientific advisor Matthew David Eyles, and women's side physiotherapist

Gaurav Mehra and video analyst Amutha Prakash were not cleared for the September 19 to October 4 quadrennial event. Even though the move didn't go down well with Oltmans, he said both the men's and women's teams are focussed to deliver the goods despite the absence of the specialists. "I am shocked. In 30 years of my professional career, I haven't encountered such a scenario. It is impossible to manage a team without people in specific roles," Oltmans said on the sidelines of sending-off ceremony for the teams held at HI secretary

Narinder Batra's residence here today. "We were supposed to leave tomorrow but we still don't know when we are flying because we haven't got our tickets yet. These are all distracting us and throwing our plans haywire. "Our main focus now is to stay away from all these distractions and make sure that we perform to the level which we are capable of and if we do so, we have a fair chance," the legendary Dutchman said. Indian men's team's chief coach TerryWalsh is also "disturbed" and "surprised" by the last-minute problems.

BOXING INDIA ELECTIONS TODAY, NEW BEGINNING IN STORE Close to two years after the national federation's suspension sent Indian boxing into a tumble, a fresh beginning is all set to be made tomorrow with the conduct of elections to form a new governing body even though the run up to the polls has been marred by controversies. Boxing India, the preliminary body recognised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) as India's representative, will be conducting the election, the build-up to which has been marred by allegations of manipulation.

Injured Jwala Gutta pulls out of Asian Games N

EW DELHI: Ace Indian women's doubles player Jwala Gutta has pulled out of the prestigious Asian Games after sustaining a sprain in the right knee ahead of the multi-sport event in Incheon, Korea. One half of the World Championship bronze medallist pair, Jwala developed a pain in her right knee and decided to consult doctor, who advised her complete rest for the next two weeks, forcing her to miss the Asian Games.

"I was feeling a little pain after I started training for the Asian Games following the World Championship but it was okay and my coach also told me it is fine as long as it is bearable but then yesterday I sprained my knee," Jwala, who along with Ashwini Ponnappa helped India win a historic bronze at the Uber Cup, told PTI. "There was swelling and I consulted two doctors, who advised me to rest for 10-12 days, which means I had no option but to pull out. It is a

weird feeling because I have never withdrawn from a tournament due to injury in my career," added the 31year-old, who won a gold and a silver at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively. Jwala has been a vital cog in India's team championship and her withdrawal is a big blow for the women's side. "The swelling has come down. But I am not able to exert weight on the knee as its hurting. Also age is not on my side, so I have to be careful.”

SP Academy down Bodyline in close contest

MUMBAI: SP Football Academy and Bodyline FC were engaged in a grim battle for supremacy before the former managed to hold on to their first half strike to eke out a 1-0 win in a women’s match of the 11th BWFA Football tournament 2014, conducted by Bandra West Football Association under the auspices of the MDFA, sponsored by MLA Baba Siddique and played at the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao municipal grounds. Thereafter, they defended stoutly to deny the Bodyline attackers from

scoring the equaliser and to emerge victors. With the three points earned from the win, SP Academy topped their pool and avoids a meeting with last years` holders and favourites Sea View Sports Club in the quarter-final play offs. MUMBAI: Xavier Almeida, 75, the well-kown hockey/ football commentator familiar to most Gymkhana’s and Clubs that conducted Rink Hockey/Football, in Mumbai and the suburbs, died Monday morning at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra after a brief Illness. "It's a sad day for everybody here in the city of

Mumbai and especially at Willingdon Sports Club, Santacruz, where he was a managing committee member,” said Olympian Merwyn Fernandis. “It’s hard to imagine not having Xavier around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much.” With his prodigious memory, no-nonsense manner, and infectious and unfailing enthusiasm, Xavier was the undoubted voice of Rink Hockey /Football. Ever

the critical observer, he was always more than a detached bystander and never flinched from issuing blunt and often controversial opinions about the sporting — and occasionally unsporting — spectacle unfolding before him. But it was as a commentator on spectacular sporting endeavours that he made his mark, his “garrulous gurgle adding presence to the big occasion. His astute reading of the

game and knowledge about both past and present players, made him a standout commentator, someone who will be sorely missed in the future. Past and present hockey and football players, including Olympians Merwyn Fernandis, Joaquim Carvalho and Dhanraj Pillay were among many sportsperson present at the funeral to bid farewell to Almeida who was laid to rest on Tuesday evening.

OME: Ferrari, a byword for flashy sports cars, hit rough ground Wednesday with the shock announcement that its president of 23 years, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, has been pushed out after a boardroom split. Just days after saying he wanted to stay, Montezemolo -- who has been dogged by six years of Formula One racing failure -announced he will be stepping down on October 13. The top job at the Italian Fiat, Sergio Marchionne. A press conference held by Ferrari luxury sports car company will be taken over Montezemolo and Marby the head of parent group chionne was announced for

Wednesday afternoon. Ferrari is the biggest and most glamourous name in Formula One racing, competing on the Grand Prix circuit with huge success since it started in 1950, and the team's logo of a black stallion against a red background is instantly recognised by motorsport fans around the world. But the brand's poor performance over the past six years, combined with recent clashes in strategy between Montezemolo and Fiat, had led racing watchers to tip his likely exit.

Judgement day for Oscar Pistorius

M

UMBAI: Yuvraj Deshmukh etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to compete in an AMA Motocross race in USA and finishing in the splendid second position behind his American rival Gabe Laskamic. What made it extra-special for Deshmukh is that he is just nineyears-old and is pursuing his passion of dirt bike racing which he has inherited from his father Sandeep who is in the healthcare business. Young Yuvraj, a resident of Pune, ardently believes that racing was always part of his genetics and showcases a fearless approach on the bike. He started very early and participated in several competitions. until one day his present coach saw him zipping past him on the race track. This was when Rustom Patel saw the spark in the boy and took him under his wing. Currently Yuvraj is riding a KTM 65 CC 2014 bike. “I don't get scared at all while riding and I am constantly calculating how to ride in my mind,” said Yuvraj with utmost confidence who finished second in the MRF Motorcross Ranking. When asked about his dream bike, Yuvraj promptly replied the KTM 500cc SXF. His coach Rustom Patel beams with pride when he speaks about Yuvraj. “I have never seen a kid riding like this ever. I had gone for a race in

Pune and there were threefour kids racing and suddenly I saw this orange color KTM gunning out and the way the boy was riding I immediately fell in love with him and decided I have to get in touch with this boy.” The student-coach duo seems made for each other as Patel brings out the best in the nine-year-old. Yuvraj said the support from his family has been immense in pursuing his passion and immediately acknowledges the role of his mentor. “Rustom sir makes me ride and then tells me my mistakes. He makes learning fun,” said the student from Vibgyor International School, Pune who started racing bike at the age of five. Yuvraj has been training under Rustom from the past one and a half year and the coach stresses on the fact that there is a long way to go. On being probed about what's the next goal for the duo, Rustom passionately said, “ I wanna see Yuvraj grow on the international platform and

wave the Indian flag all over the world. The next target for Yuvraj are races in Sri Lanka and Dubai and he will also be participating in races across the country.” However, in order to achieve his immediate goals, the young boy will have to sacrifice eating chocolates, something which is immensely difficult to keep nine-year old kids away from. “No more chocolates as he is on a strict diet to improve his overall stamina and fitness,” said the coach. Due to his impressive show, there are plans to send Yuvraj for a one month period to America for training. Along with racing, he has to keep up with his regular studies. Even though he misses school, he tries to make the most when he is not competing. His mother Swaroopa, plays a key role in overseeing that her son's education does not get affected by his racing and has hired two private tutors to help him cope with his studies.

AIFF’s coffers hit hard as players wait in Shanghai N

EW DELHI: The All India Football Federation's coffers have been hit hard after it was left with no option but to cancel the air tickets for the men and women teams' journey from Shanghai to the Incheon Asiad three times due to confusion over getting clearance from the government. The sports ministry had yesterday cleared the football teams' participation in the mega event at no cost to the federation, but delay in getting accreditation from IOA meant the AIFF had to cancel the tickets to Incheon for a second time last night, before repeating the process today. "Can it be called as not cost

to the federation now. Three cancellations mean a lot of money and the AIFF is paying for cancellations and rebooking," an official close to the football federation said. The teams, which were to travel to Incheon on 12th as per the last schedule, will now leave a day later as it was learnt that they would not be allowed in the Games Village before 13th. "And also, the women's team play its first match on 14th September, almost less than 24 hours following their arrival in Incheon," he added. The Games is slated to be held in the South Korean city from September 9-October 4. The AIFF today finally got the

accreditation, which also doubles up as visa, for the 45member group from IOA. Both the teams had gone for exposure tours to China from here they were to leave for Incheon today as per the original schedule. Clubbed in Group A alongside hosts South Korea, Maldives and Thailand, the Indian women play their first group league match against Maldives on September 14. The other matches are against South Korea on September 17 and Thailand after a day's break. The under-23 men, on the other hand, take on the might of last Games' silver medallist UAE in their first group league match on September 15.

PRETORIA: ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar Pistorius appears in court today to face judgement over the killing of his model girlfriend, ending a sixmonth trial that turned the amputee's private life into a global spectacle. The 27-year-old celebrity athlete faces life behind bars -and notoriety that would eclipse his athletic achievements -- if

found guilty of deliberately killing lover Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. Judge Thokozile Masipa's ruling, on charges of murder and three firearms offenses, will likely be laid out in two days of careful legal argument and then a final verdict, perhaps on Friday. The high-drama, half-year trial has fed intense media interest

worldwide, with live broadcasts veering into the realm of TV reality shows. Nearly 40 witnesses testified, including Pistorius, who broke down, weeping and at times vomiting as he heard how the 29year-old blonde's head "exploded" like a watermelon under the impact of his hollowpoint bullet.
