threats, without even being approached by anyone, in high-profile cases has become an usual practice by Pujari. The reason for this is that the gangster grabs the opportunity for extorting money from city's small-time businessmen and builders by referring to the mentioning of his name in media in high profile cases like ZintaNess case. Meanwhile, on September 5, sleuths from the Property Cell (PC) of crime branch had arrested three shooters from Nariman Point area of South Mumbai who had assembled to kill a city based journalist. In this regard, PC sleuths in the current week arrested fourth accused from Golibar area of Santacruz in western suburbs, who had provided a vehicle to the three shooters.

bdo Yusuf Majeed from Yemen looks like a 10-yearold, weighs 26 kg and is actually 26 years old and should have a body weight of 65 kg. This is what Sickle Cell disease, a relatively unknown, dangerous genetic blood disorder that can be fatal if not diagnosed, did to him. Owing to this condition, Abdo had been unable to walk for the last eight years. But today, the scene is different. Abdo, who had come to the hospital on a wheelchair, is now able to walk with support and is set to fly back to Yemen after he recently underwent a surgery conducted by Dr Sachin Bhonsle, Senior Orthopaedic and joint replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Dr Bhonsle, who has a career spanning 25 years said, “This is a first of its kind case that I have seen. It was a challenging task. His knee

bone was soft with poor strength with only 7 cm width compared to normal size of the bone which is 1020 cm wide. Abdo had growth retardation problem with multiple joint problems in hips, knees, shoulders etc. From hip to ankle, Abdo had one single bone in both the knees with a 90 degrees crooked bend with absent knee joints. He also had very less amount of ligament (fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bones). Also, we had to bring down the level of the Sickle haemoglobin (HbS) from 84 per cent to 35 per cent to make him safe for the surgery and anaesthesia. We had to do exchange blood transfusion for Abdo where each time 300 ml of his blood was taken and replaced with donor blood. We had to do everything just the way we do it for a child.” Abdo’s left knee was operated first and after a gap of four days, his right knee was also operated in a similar 26-year-old Abdo taking small steps with the help of Dr Bhonsle and the hospital staff. manner.

A knee replacement surgery was performed where the bones were joined to each other. Specialised instruments were used to cut apart the bones and reshape the bone surface to create joints. During the surgery, ligaments were carefully balanced and customised knee replacement, ceramic prosthesis were fixed for a longer duration. “It was a successful surgery. The knee is fully mobile and straightened. Once Abdo starts walking, with time, there will be more stability and improvement in walking. He will eventually need shoulder and hip replacements as well and will be on life-long follow ups,” Dr Bhonsle added. “After being diagnosed with Sickle Cell disease, no doctor could help us. Abdo's condition kept deteriorating and we could nothing. But after coming to India and undergoing the surgery, I felt very happy to see him walk,” said Abdo's father, Yusuf Abdul Majeed who is teacher in Yemen.

MASINA HOSPITAL NURSES CORNER DIRECTOR By A Staff Reporter
O
n Thursday, Dr R Dastur, medical director of Masina hospital at Byculla was gheraoed by a group of disgruntled nurses after they found out that the matron of the hospital, who was soon going to retire, was told to continue working for a few more weeks as hospital authorities are still looking for a new matron. The nurses reportedly gheraoed Dr Dastur before his hospital rounds and demanded that one of the senior nurses working in Masina hospital be appointed as the matron. The concern of the hospital authorities is that the nurses probably would pose hurdles in the process of holding interviews for the matron's post on Friday. Apparently, the nurses working at Masina hospital too have been asked to come for the interview but they seemed to refuse to accept this. The chaos, seemingly did not affect the functioning of the hospital.

Fearsome ‘Jaws’ no more
Mayor Snehal Ambekar and her deputy, Alka Kerkar (R), after winning the posts on Tuesday.
First citizen must get more powers
THE Mayor of Mumbai is a non-entity. She has no powers. Her main duty is to go to the airport to receive foreign dignitaries. And whenever a house collapses and some die, she has to convey her condolence message. He or she is only a figurehead, presiding at corporation meetings and all the time saying "Those for, those against, carried". There was a mayor who instead of saying "agenda" said "menu"... The best thing that has happened to the city is that a woman has been elected to the post of the Mayor for the 4th time. Perhaps the councillors think that just as a woman is in total control of a home, a lady mayor can also exercise effective control over meetings of corporations, some of which
are quite vociferous and difficult. In the United States, the mayor is not only the first citizen but he has powers to pass on-the-spot orders. He has powers to take important decisions with regard to the welfare of the city without having to call for the meeting of the councillors. In Mumbai, the mayor should be given powers to take prompt decisions. Now any issue -- small or big has to come before the corporation and passed. This, takes time, a lot of time. If the mayor enjoys majority support, it would be quite all right for her to take decisions herself. This is an issue which has been often discussed but the status of the mayor being a non-entity has not been changed.
Show ‘dadagiri’ to get governance
Telangana CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao's recent comment on 'burying alive' the media 10km deep has attracted an appropriate comment by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar. He has told Rao he should show 'dadagiri' (bossing around) to set things right and give good governance instead of
attacking the media. "If 'dadagiri' has to be shown show it by, stopping wrong happenings. Do development work. We will help. We will make Telanganga better. The language of burying media should be buried. And of course, the media should also be responsible.”

n a defiant move similar to her predecessor, newly-elected Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar has refused to remove the red beacon light on her official car. Ambekar, 42, the first time Shiv Sena corporator, courted controversy on Wednesday by stating that a Mayor is "equivalent to the Chief Minister" and thus, should be allowed to use a red beacon light on the official vehicle. Reacting to Ambekar's statement, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan remarked that everyone should follow rules. "There is a Constitution...There are rules," he told a television news channel. Yesterday while talking to the media Ambekar said, "If you ask my opinion, I think if the CM uses a red beacon, mayor is of the same level and thus should be allowed to use a red beacon (fitted to the car). Whenever a VIP comes to the city, the mayor goes to receive him/ her as a representative of the people. The Mayor should therefore have a standard," she said. According to a recent state government's directive, a mayor is not entitled to use a red beacon light on the official car. She further added, “I

Devendra Amberkar, opposition leader (Congress) in the BMC said, “If mayor continues to use the red beacon car violating the norms of the state gov-
ernment and the Supreme Court, the entire Congress party will come ahead and file a 'contempt of court' case against her.” Reacting to what the opposition party said, Ambekar refused to comment. As the election code of conduct is going to be put into force any moment, Ambekar said, “As per my knowledge, I will be allowed to use the red beacon car from the mayor's bungalow till the BMC headquarters for official purpose only.” Ambekar, a former LIC officer who had won the municipal election from G-South (Parel) ward, was elected the city mayor on Tuesday.
expect that experienced and reputed builders would bid for this project as this is a humongous project with a big area and it can turn out to be a little township on its own standing on a 33-acre land.” It will be recalled that the Abhyudaya Nagar project has a controversial past. Builder R C Chaturvedi of the Shreepati Group was falsely implicated and arrested by some policemen at the behest of rival builder Rashmikant Shah who was also in the race to redevelop this same Abhyudaya Nagar property. Chaturvedi was in jail for 41 days before he got bail. Subsequently, several officers, including senior IPS officer Bipin Bihari, were suspended for their alleged role in the frame-up. A real estate expert, who wished not to be named said, “This area has a close proximity to the Cotton Green station on the Harbour Line, Chinchpokli on the Central Line and Lower Parel station on the Western Line. This is also close to Eastern Freeway and the area touches the Parel – Sewree division which is a boost for major developers.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he Mumbai suburban Central Railway's revenue from the fine collected from without-ticket passengers galloped by 26.44 per in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2014 as as compared to the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal year. Officials said that the number of ticketless passengers had increased while other officials claimed that the railways had taken stringent action against the without ticket passengers thus increasing the revenue. According to data from the revenue department of the Mumbai division of the Central Railway, in the first two quarters of the present fiscal year, the railways have earned Rs 15.3 crore as fine from ticketless passengers (April 1 to September 10). During the same period last year, the CR had collected Rs 12.1 crore from ticketless travellers. From September 1 to 10 this year, the Central Railway collected a revenue of Rs 58.43 lakh through such fines as compared to last year's Rs 44.10 lakh. In other words, the 16 per cent increase has been recorded in this month itself. The rising figures raises concerns over the number of ticketless
passenger. When asked, officials said, “This year, we have extensively focussed on ticket checking. It was observed that the intensity of ticket checking was less on the Harbour Line, so we have increased rounds of inspection and staff. Consequently the revenue has increased.”
CR plans more ATVMs To facilitate suburban passengers who patiently stand in queues for tickets, the Central Railway has planned to increase the number of ATVM machines. According to the new plan, the number of machines will be increased by 70 per cent to cut down the waiting time of passengers. On an average, per passengerhas to wait for 7 to 12 minutes in the queue, subject to rush hours. Some times, the waiting time increases even further. According to CR officials, there are 400 ATVM machines at the moment in the suburban section and the railways have planned to add another 284 to the existing lot. CR officials added that the new machines will be installed in December.

ince the past 14 years, a 65-year-old woman had been trying to trace a cheater who had looted and conned her by promising to redevelop her property in Santacruz. After visiting every police station to find the cheat, the senior citizen found him to be inside the Bandra lock up on a molestation charge. According to the woman who did not wish to be named, she had an ancestral property at Kalina in Santacruz east. The woman, whose only son is in America wanted to redevelop the property for which she had been
looking out for a developer. The accused, identified as Peter Clarence Pereira befriended her through common contacts and offered to redevelop the plot. For various official permissions and other formaliThe accused: ties, Pereira took Rs.2.60 Peter Clarence lakh from the woman and Pereira fled with the cash. “I trusted the man thinking that he is a known person but he cheated me and the day I gave the money to him, he vanished. I had arranged for the money with
great difficulty as I am staying alone since I have separated from my husband and my son is still studying,” said the woman. On August 29, the woman was shocked to see Pereira’s name in a newspaper. She learnt that Pereira had been arrested by the Khar Police in a rape case. The woman approached the Khar Police and was told that Pereira was lodged at the Bandra Police lockup after he was arrested. The woman was shown the photo of Pereira, whom she recognized and told the police that he had cheated her in the year 2000.“I did not have any written proof against him, however, I approached the

ith the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) increasing the number of traps, officials in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) continue to misuse their position by devising novel ways of collecting the bribe money. However, the ACB’s Thane unit proved smarter for a senior medical officer and a pharmacist who were held on charges of demanding bribe from a local electropath, to refrain from initiating action against him for prescribing allopathic medicines to patients. Interestingly, a local tea vendor who acted as a collection agent was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs.30,000 on behalf of the tainted medicos. According to the ACB, the complainant who operates an electropathy clinic in the Janta Nagar slums in Kashimira, filed a complaint against medical officer Dr Sanjeev Gaikwad and pharmacist Yogesh Shinde. In his complaint the electropath stated that the duo

Subsequently, an ACB team led by Deputy SP Ajay Afle laid a trap and nabbed tea vendor Mohan Rathod while accepting the first installment of bribe amount on behalf of the medicos on Thursday afternoon. deputy commissioner of police and explained the case. I told the DCP that Pereira was the same man who had cheated me. On his instructions, the Vakola Police registered a case of cheating against Pereira,” she said. An officer from the Vakola police station said, ''Pereira has cheated many people. Knowing that he was being looked for by several persons, he used to change his appearance every week. Pereira was an expert in disguising himself. Every week he used to don a different look.” The officers said that they have registered the case and asked for police custody from Khar police station once he is remanded in judicial custody.
leuths of the Virar police have arrested a 29year-old youth on alleged charges of raping and impregnating a minor girl. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Sujal Santra (29) and another person, Jihad (full name not known), who also raped the girl is still absconding. While Sujal raped the girl under the pretext of offering the girl extra money for working at his firm, Jahid committed the act after promising to marry her. It is alleged that Jahid sexually exploited the girl under the pretext of marriage but retracted after she refused to convert her religion, sources said. While a hunt is on to nab the absonding accused, Sujal has been booked under sections 376(2) (i), 363, 366 of the Indian Penal Code and under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Sexual Offences against Children Act, the police said. Sujal has been remanded to police custody till September 15 by the District Sessions Court.

It should be noted that the MBMC has initiated a crackdown against the dangerous trend by several doctors who openly administer intravenous (IV) fluids (saline drips) to patients and the tainted medicos had used this opportunity to take advantage of the situation. All the accused have been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigations are on.

lmost three hours after a chain snatcher was caught red-handed by Vakola Police on Thursday morning, another incident of bag lifting was reported a stone's throw away from the police station in which two bike-borne robbers decamped with jewellery worth over Rs.3 lakh. Early Thursday morning at around 10 pm, a 45-yearold woman was walking to catch the BEST bus on Western Express Highway just opposite Pan Bai International School in Vakola when two bike borne thieves snatched her two gold chains. A police patrol van and some passersby nabbed one of the thieves as they were fleeing. The police recovered two

our members of a family including two brothers and their parents who allegedly stopped civic officials from razing an unauthorised construction in the Shree Nagar locality of Wagle Estate on Wednesday, have been booked, Thane police said on Thursday. The Shree Nagar police charged the family under Sections 353, 506, 504 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code as well as Sections 397A (1) A and B of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act 1949, the police said. Thane Municipal Corporation's Assistant Municipal Commissioner (Wagle Estate Division) Mangal Shinde told PTI that a
team of civic workers went to the location to pull down an unauthorised permanent pucca structure which was being built by the owner, replacing the unauthorised temporary shed. When the civic team began pulling it down, the owner's family comprising Syam Korde, Sashi Korde and his parents opposed it and created the scene despite the presence of Thane Municipal Corporation officials and the police. When the officials took a tough stand the Korde family fled the scene after which the illegal construction was razed, the police officer said. No arrest has been made in connection with the offence so far, the police said.

According to the Vakola Police, Shaikh is a habitual offender who has several cases registered at various police stations including Versova, MHB, Khar, Bandra
etc, while his colleague Akeel Ansari, who was riding the bike at the time of incident is absconding. Shaikh is also a drug addict and was under the influence of drugs when he was nabbed. He used to stay along with his family in Daulat Nagar locality in Santacruz (W). “In our custody, he revealed that he has committed similar snatchings in Gujarat as well,” police said. Shockingly, the Vakola Police had just completed the formalities in Shaikh's case when another crime was reported wherein two bikers snatched the bag of a woman who was traveling in an autorickshaw. Interestingly, this incident was reported just a stone's throw away from the Vakola police station.

ndia on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to stamping out global terrorism and said it will support any initiative aimed at eliminating the menace. "India provides support in all fora for anything which is termed as anti-terrorist activity. It (always) supports the cause of anti-terrorism," Minister of State for External Affairs Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh told PTI. Singh was responding to a question whether India will extend support to the US in the war against ISIS, which has captured vast swathes in Iraq and Syria, murdering and capturing thousands, including women and children. The minister's statement came on the day US President Barack Obama vowed to "degrade and ultimately destroy" the Islamic State and declared to launch a systematic campaign of airstrikes

"I am quite sure that if the US wants support in the UN General Assembly against anti-terror activities, it will get the support of most of the world," Singh said. To another question on Liberal Democrat MP David Ward securing a debate in the UK Parliament on the human rights situation in Jammu & Kashmir, Singh sarcastically said, "such issues should be raised only by those countries whose hands are clean."
The debate which was held on Thursday was seen by the Indian community as an attempt to engage in India bashing. Singh, also Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, said the economic growth of the country has picked up pace after the new government took over at the Centre. "Factors such as government's initiative, tax regime being re-looked and improvement in manufacturing sector are contributing to the country's growth," he said.

enior Shiv Sena leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Diwakar Raote yesterday urged Governor C Vidyasagar Rao to uphold the constitution and take a decision over the ministership of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister of state for School Education, Fauzia Khan in the state cabinet. In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, the Sena MLC argued that the term of membership of Khan in the legislative council had expired on March 12, 2014. And the term of her ministership without being a member of either of the two houses has come to an end on September 11. Raote urged the Governor to ensure that Khan resigned from the state cabinet and if she is to continue as a minister then she should be administered the oath of office again. The Sena MLC drew the attention of the Governor to the fact that Khan was a Governor-nominated member of the legislative council and a minister of state for School Education. He argued that in reality once the term of mem-
bership expires, she should have ceased to be a minister in the state cabinet. Raote argued that with the expiry of the membership, all the perks associated with it also come to an end. As per constitu-

othing is well in the Congress and NCP, the alliance partner in the state. Both the parties are struggling to finalise the seat sharing for the forthcoming Assembly elections. Now a war of words has started between the leaders of both the parties. The NCP yesterday targeted senior Congress minister Patangrao Kadam for suggesting that the 15-yearold party should merge with Congress. Speaking to reporters, the state NCP president, Sunil Tatkare said, “Patangrao Kadam is not that senior to advice Sharad Pawar. He better concentrate on strengthening the Congress party. Instead of giving free advice, he better pay attention to bring secular government in the state. Patangrao Kadam has a good sense of humour but I have yet not seen anyone taking him seriously in the Congress.” On Wednesday, Kadam had said that it is the right time for NCP president Sharad Pawar to merge his party with the Congress. “It is high time that Pawar decides to merge his party with the Congress. History shows that when NCP goes for an alliance with the Congress, NCP defectors spell trouble for the Congress during polls. Later, such rebel NCP leaders are rewarded by the Pawar-led party by making them directors of co-operative banks or giving them important posts.”
arrangement, the Sena contests 169 Assembly seats and the BJP 119 Assembly seats. This arrangement is likely to undergo a change with four new allies – Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna, Swabhimani Sanghatna, Republican Party of India (Athawale) and Shiv Sangram joining the Sena-BJP led Mahayuti alliance. Sources disclosed that sparks flew at the state election campaign committee meeting held at the state party head office yesterday. Party sources disclosed that party cadres were up in arms as the party's state incharge,
Rajeev Pratap Rudy Rajeev Pratap Rudy, tried to rework the party's social media campaign strategy much to the dislike of some party office-bearers. According to a party office-bearer, a section of the party leadership was upset over Rudy trying to bring in some Information Technology experts from outside the party ignoring the dedicated party workers.

OW that general elections for the next State Assembly are about to be set in motion, the million-dollar question, as usual, arises, who will win the show and who will bite the dust. The results of the elections are to be out before Diwali. Quite obviously, the next question is who will enjoy the firecrackers and who would be trying to find a dark corner in the lit-up nights to hide their faces. In plain language, now is the time for all newspapers and TV news channels to work and keep predicting as to who will form the next government to rule Maharashtra for the next five years. Generally political pundits, when they express their predictions, mainly rely on the figures of voting of the previous elections and the latest opinion polls. Now that the science of psephology has developed so much that it is not very difficult to come to near accurate conclusion by undertaking a right exercise of opinion poll. However, opinion polls results in India are never as accurate as in the westchief minister of a state cannot say ern world, for many reasons. Despite this handicap, if one goes by the if any journalist in a TV channel or newspaper criticises him, he will bury verdict of the recently concluded Lok Sabha you can safely predict change of him 10 km deep in earth — alive. It is a election, power in Maharashtra after the Assembly violent threat which is made in a don's elections. This is because, the Shiv Sena-BJP world. It cannot be allowed in a demo- led Mahayuti (Grand alliance) had registered cratic set up. Perhaps a CM who holds lead in as many as 232 assembly segments out such a violent threat can be made out of 288 seats. Considering that the magic figure to grab power in Maharashtra is 145, it to face legal action. seems to be a foregone conclusion that the Telangana Chief Minister Kalva- Mahayuti will achieve this figure.

candidate to snatch power from the threeterm old Congress-NCP aghadi and that the BJP, the party that is aspiring to lead the next government, grossly lack an able and widely acceptable leader, only make the task a bit difficult for the Mahayuti. For the Shiv Sena, Uddhav Thackeray is the sole leader and there is no competition or challenge to his leadership. However, BJP is not ready to forego the coveted post of chief minister. That has made the matter difficult. There was a serious rift within the Mahayuti over the issue of distribution of seats. Though that seems to have been resolved to a great extent, the problem of seat sharing with small partners of the Mahayuti continues to haunt the alliance. If Republican Party of India (RPI) led by Ramdas Athawale decide not to go with the Mahayuti, fate could reverse result s at least in some seats, and that could prove fatal for their election prospects.
A
kuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) attacked the media in the most deplorable manner. It was a hate speech. The media held a protest but they were promptly arrested. KCR, perhaps, is not aware that the Constitution of India gives a certain high status for the media and recognises the importance of freedom of the press. By attacking the media he has tried to make out that mediapersons are the scum of the earth. The media is only doing its duty and it has to quite often tell unpleasant truths. There is always a legal remedy for those who are hurt by an attack. A threat like 'I will bury you 10 km below earth — alive' is definitely a remark which only those in a criminal world make. Journalists elsewhere in the country must go to the aid of the media in Telangana. Justice Markandey Katju, president of the Press Council, should look into KCR's most deplorable, shocking, violent attack on the media and do something about it.

THINKING ALOUD
Anti-Congress rule
Bharatkumar Raut
It’s true, that the Lok Sabha election verdict was unprecedented and thus cannot become a rule or a formula. There the was anti-Congress rule wave coupled with Narendra Modi’s hurricane in India, that wiped out the 10-year-old UPA rule and reduced the century-old Congress to a shameful 44 seats. Some people describe the Modi wave as tsunami that devastated all sciences of gauging people’s mood. For all said and done, the fact remains that the people totally rejected the Congress-led UPA rule and handed over the nation to BJP-led NDA, with Modi at the helm of its affairs. Maharashtra was in tune with the rest of India that gave as many as 42 seats to Mahayuti leaving only six to the Congress-NCP alliance. Will the pattern continue in the Assembly elections also?… That’s the million-dollar question. The answer is yes and no. The fact that there is no candidature of Modi or near equal
The splinter outfit in the Mahayuti is making an undue demand for seats and to quell it is not an easy task. However, the lead in 232 assembly segments is a huge margin by any yardstick. Even if it recedes because of absence of Modi wave or because of infights within the Mahayuti, which could cost them maximum 100 seats, even then the Mahayuti would come to 132 seats, that is only 13 seats short of simple majority. Going by the track record of state assembly elections, there is a presence of at least a dozen independents in newly-elected House. The natural mindset of independents is to join hands with the winning side. In that case, in the worst scenario, the Mahayuti will have to compromise with independents to grab power. Whether 1995 Assembly elections, when the Yuti-government came to power for the first time, or in 1999 and in 2004 elections,
Understanding the purpose of life E
VERY living being has a purpose in life and it is the knowing of that purpose which enables every soul to fulfill it. As it is said: 'Blessed is he who knoweth his life's purpose.' Be not surprised if you find many groping in darkness all through life, doing one thing or another, always dissatisfied, always discontented. And everything they undertake remains without result. The reason is the absence of that knowledge, the knowledge of the purpose of life. Individuals apart, every object has its purpose. The mission of science is to discover the purpose in objects, and it is for this that science has come into being. Be it medical science or philosophy, all the various aspects of science are the result of the desire to discover the purpose of things. But the aim of mysticism is to find the purpose in the lives of human beings – the purpose in one's own life and the purpose in the lives of others. So long as a man has not found this purpose, though he may have success or failure, though he may seem to be happy or unhappy, in reality he does not live. For life begins from the mo-
ment a person finds the purpose of his life. One finds people of great wealth, people who have position and every comfort and convenience, and yet who are missing something, missing the main thing which alone can make them happy: knowledge of the purpose of their life. This is the very thing they miss. And yet at the same time mankind is ignorant of this. A man will be interested in a thousand things, he will be interested first in
MATTER & SPIRIT one thing and then pass on to another, and so on, but he seems never to come to that point where he finds the purpose of his life. Why? Because he does not look for it. Coming to children's education, very often the parents do not think about this problem. Whatever seems to them beneficial for the child to do, that it must do. They do not pay attention to the fact that it is in one's childhood that one has to find the purpose of one's life. How many lives have been ruined for this reason! A child may have been brought up with every facility and yet kept
when Congress-NCP ruled the state, the ruling side had taken the support of the independents or small groups to achieve the figure required to establish majority. On the other hand, the present ruling side of Congress-NCP alliance has many handicaps, the first and the worst for their prospects being the bitterness between the two partners. The infights continue ever since it took over for the third time in 2009, with Ashok Chavan as the chief minister. The intra-party crisis has stooped to the level of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar engaging themselves personally in mud-slinging bouts on public platforms regularly. The rift has taken such a shape that on many occasions, people in the state doubt whether the state has one government or two, working in opposite directions.
Winning prospects The problem took another sharp and risky turn when NCP, winning four seats in Lok Sabha elections leaving only two seats to win for Congress, has claimed equal number of seats to contest in the Assembly elections. Sensing the fact that the NCP has better winning prospects, Congress has been vehemently denying the claim. The issue is yet to be sorted out, though leaders of both parties are publicly claiming that the alliance is strong and undivided. According to many close political observers, both sides have already made preparations to field candidates in all constituencies. Now even if seat-sharing formula is forged, those aspirants who have already started working in their respective constituencies would not be happy and ready to withdraw and would perhaps prefer to run for the elections as independent rebels. Such a situation would further weaken the already frail prospects of the ruling side. Despite everything, one must realize, understand and accept that the Congress culture in Maharashtra is deep rooted in the state. It remains alive all five years through the cooperative movement that runs sugar mills, dairies, animal husbandries, power-loom cooperatives, medical and engineering colleges etc. It’s difficult if not impossible to uproot Congress culture in interior Maharashtra that has a decisive majority and supremacy of Maratha community. Will the Mahayuti magic that has already started the pre-election campaign in a big-way, perform the magic for the second time after 1995? That’s the million-dollar question! @BharatkumarRaut away from the purpose of his life. However unhappy a man may be, the moment he knows the purpose of his life a switch is turned and the light is on. He may not be able to accomplish anything at once, but the very fact of knowing the purpose gives him all the hope and strength to wait for that day. If he has to strive after that purpose all his life, he does not mind so long as he knows what the purpose is. Such person has greater power than a thousand people working all thier life not knowing the purpose. Besides, what we call wrong or right, good or bad differs according to the purpose of life. The more one studies life, the more one realizes that it is not the action but the purpose that makes things right or wrong, good or bad. And as we progress we become more awake, and the greater becomes the purpose. Beyond this is the ultimate purpose. We begin our lives with an individual focus, but we come to a stage where the purpose of every soul is one and the same. And that can be studied by studying the inclinations of men. Every man has five inclinations hidden in the depths of his heart, but he may forget that ultimate purpose, but at the same time there is a continual inclination towards it. That shows that the ultimate purpose of the life of all is one and the same.

WHY is BJP shying away from elections in Delhi, even when it claims that there is a huge Modi wave and despite the massive mandate they got in the General Elections a few months ago. It seems that both those claims are waning out fast. Logic says that they should have opted for an election and formed a new government with full majority (which they should have any way got because of the NaMo wave). Then why this back-door entry that too when they don't have sufficient numbers? Have they taken clue from the Bihar election and understood the ground reality? How will NaMo justify a government formed by horse trading and unethical practice when he promised a corruption-free India.

Trying all tricks STARING at a possible defeat in the Assembly polls to be held in about a week's time, the ruling SP government in UP seems to be leaving no stone unturned in showing the BJP leaders in a bad light. The framing of charges and slapping of cases against the BJP chief and one of its party MPs is an example in point. It appears that the a secular state government has not learnt any lessons from the results of the recent Lok Sabha polls. The broom – the election symbol is only a gimmick'. The chief of the party has lost his credibility in his own party because of his autocratic ways of functioning. It needs to be realised that his new outfit has had its golden chance to rule Delhi which it frittered away in its greed for national glory, betraying the trust of the Delhiites. Apart from their long life, they also save on fuel, provide for better driving comfort and use cement, a plentifully available commodity in the country. Maintenance costs are also lower. These Roads have a small green advantage as well. Being white-topped they reflect light at night which means the intensity of street lighting can be brought down in terms of wattage. The main disadvantage is that bitumen roads will cost only one fourth of what is the outlay for concrete roads. Theorem for MH 370 IT is reported that the Australian government is launching another search operation for MH 370. One approach suggested, since there has been no report that it had been used – Bayes Theorem – a mathematical gem little known outside the mathematical, intelligence and scientific world. Propounded by a priest, Reverend Thomas Bayes in the 18th century, the theorem is also known by other names such as Prior Probability and Conditional Probability. Its mathematical form was structured by Pierre Simon Laplace. It had several dissenters and was a mathematical taboo for nearly two centuries. Its popularity and use ebbed and flowed till it was used to win the intelligence battles during WW II. Many facts relating to that era are still classified. The theorem has been brought to the public limelight through a book in non-mathematical language – The Theory That Would Not Die – by Sharon Bertsch McGrayne. Read how the theorem cracked the Enigma code, hunted down Russian submarines during the Cold War, traced nuclear weapons accidentally dropped and, most important, helped find Air France Flight AF 447 that disappeared over the Atlantic in 2009. It also predicted more accurately than NASA that a space shuttle would have an accident and the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster. Plan for greener, cleaner festivals
TIME FOR CHANGE: Most festivals celebrated in India these days leave the environment and the cities in a dirty mess, with pollution, dirt and ugliness all around. THE city of Mumbai will be once again be festooned in the political posters because of the festival season like Ganapati (now over) followed by Navratri, Diwali, Christmas and New Year meaning it is celebration time for the city. Mumbai's walls are once again plastered with different hoardings featuring the familiar and tiresome mugshots of politicians across all parties. Many of these posters are illegal and may be removed by the BMC in its clean-up drive, but they will emerge again under some pretext. One cannot understand as to why the politicians continue to break the rules and put up posters making a mess of the city for their selfish personal and political gains. It is high time that the corrupt and inefficient BMC must remove these illegal posters immediately to
make the city clean. — Bhagwan Thadani, via email
GANPATI Bappa has already left the city but if he comes to know what he is leaving behind, he will surely be unhappy with all of us. He has just left behind polluted air (thanks to the crackers), unclean land/water (the colours used for the idols, the rubbish people leave behind) and deaf ears (the loud, louder and the loudest speakers). This year, all this was slightly reduced but let us think of greener, cleaner and noise free options too. You have one full year to think about it. Please plan for pollution-free peaceful Ganpati festivals in the years to come. Enough time is there to plan and execute. — Shewata Mahadevan, Matunga

ake two slices of bread, butter them lightly (you can use a heavy hand if that’s what rocks your boat), grate of a piece of cheddar, or your favourite cheese, add some chilli flakes or a dash of mustard and toast it all together on a grill or in a flat pan... If you haven’t already figured it out, following these instructions will help you put a pretty scrumptious sandwich on your plate. Sandwiches are not only delicious, they’re also really easy to prepare. So much so, that countless variations of this snack exist — from the roadside vegetable toast, prepared with boiled, mashed potatoes and masala, to the extremely hearty BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato), which, interestingly, has been scientifically proven to help cure a hangover. Today, we bring you several different types from around the world and tell you where you can go in Mumbai to scarf down an excellent sandwich.
ChIp Butty A traditional sandwich from the United Kingdom, this one can be classified as serious comfort food. Thick, crispy French fries, sandwiched between a burger bun, make up the traditional chip butty. Served with either ketchup or brown sauce, this hearty, greasy sandwich is a real treat. Our personal favourite way to have this is by drizzling the chips with a garlic aioli before sandwiching it between crusty burger buns.
>> With just fries and ketchup, the chip butty is simple, but delicious
ChaCaReRO Native to Chile, the chacarero is one of the healthier sandwiches on this list. Made with finely shredded spicy pork or beef, the sandwich also has some greens. Usually topped with tomatoes, green beans and green peppers, this sandwich promises intense flavour in every bite.
ChORIpáN This is one sandwich that really whets our appetite. Made with chorizo, a spicy sausage, the sandwich uses only three or four elements. Crusty bread makes up the casing for this Argentinean treat, inside which are chunks of chorizo, dressed with a flavourful
chimichurri sauce that is made with olive oil, parsley, oregano, vinegar and garlic, with a tomato-based salsa sauce.
ChIvItO This sandwich, from Uruguay, has a rather misleading name. Although chivito means baby goat (or lamb), the sandwich actually relies on beef to make it the scrumptious treat that it is. Thin slices of beef, sandwiched with tomatoes, olives, bacon, fried/ hard-boiled eggs, ham, French fries, mayonnaise and mozzarella make up this monstrous sandwich. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, this delicious sandwich really piles on the calories!
BaRROS LuCO Another Chilean delight, the Barros Luco is a simple, yet satisfying sandwich. Slices of beef are topped with melted cheese and filled in a burger bun, to make this simple sandwich. It was named after former president Ramón Barros, because this was his favourite sandwich.
ORIGINS No matter how simple a sandwich might be, someone had to have to thought of it first, right? A popular belief goes that the word sandwich came into being because of John Montagu, who was the fourth Earl of Sandwich, a town located in Kent, England. The story goes that once during a gambling game, the Earl asked his cook to serve his meat between slices of bread because he didn’t want to interrupt his game with a meal. Soon, people started following his order and said ‘the same as Sandwich.’ This story is the first documented evidence of the existence of a sandwich. But,, while the Earl of Sandwich did make the snack popular, especially among the higher classes, he didn’t really invent it. It is believed that farm labourers in France had been eating meat between bread for a long time. Another story goes that a Jewish rabbi in Jerusalem in 110BC recommended eating herbs covered with a rolled up flat-bread — just like the modern sandwich roll.
DöNeR KeBaB This Turkish sandwich sports a flavour profile that us Indians are more familiar with. Spiced meat sliced from a spit (just like a shawarma) is topped with tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce and a garlic-based sauce, then sandwiched between bread and accompanied by fries. It’s the perfect hangover cure. Trust us. continued on pg 14 «

Japanese sandwich is essentially made with stir-fried soba noodles that are stuffed into a hotdog roll and garnished with a hard-boiled egg. Interesting!
>> The PanBagnat is a tuna sandwich that contains chopped vegetables and olive oil
MeTTBröTchen This one made our stomach turn and if you aren’t adventurous with food, steer clear of it! Made only with raw pork mince and white onions, this German sandwich seems seriously unappetising.
dyrLæGenS naTMad
continued from pg 13 «
Although we have trouble pronouncing the name of this Danish sandwich, it is safe to say that we can’t wait to try one. An open sandwich made with rye bread, salted beef and paté, topped with onions and shredded cabbage, the Dyrlægens natmad sounds scrumptious.

Similar to a chip butty, the Gatsby, which is a traditional South African sandwich, is a massive sub-roll filled with home-style fries that have been sautéed with onions and spices. And when we say massive, we really mean it — one traditionally prepared Gatsby is sufficient to fill four people!
As close as it gets to Indian cuisine, we would love to try this sandwich from Trinidad & Tobago. Curried chickpeas are sandwiched between flatbread and topped with onions, cucumber, mango and tamarind chutney, making it a perfect evening snack!
donkey SandWich
Medianoche
Sounds blasé, but this Chinese sandwich is exactly what the name suggests, with shredded donkey meat sandwiched in a crispy bread called Huoshao. Topped with lettuce and peppers, this sandwich is a popular street food in Beijing.
This Cuban sandwich takes the humble ham & cheese and elevates it to a whole new level. Served as a sub, the sandwich includes roast ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles, layered on sweet bread. We can already feel our mouths watering!
ceMiTa
Pan-BaGnaT
This Mexican sandwich is fiery, but worth trying. Made with thick slices of avocado, pork or beef, white cheese, onions, salsa, lettuce and chillies that are sandwiched in a brioche-like bun, we can’t wait to get our hands on a cemita.
We love the French. Their cuisine is delectable and this sandwich is proof that they can take simple ingredients and create a masterpiece. Essentially a tuna sandwich, this one consists of flaked tuna, chopped vegetables (including cucumber, onions and tomatoes), along with a generous helping of olive oil. Sandwiched between crusty, sourdough bread, we could eat the Pan-bagnat, all-day, every day.
kaya ToaST
LeBerkäSSeMMeL The name of this German sandwich is a mouthful and translates to ‘liver cheese’. It may not sound very appetising, but we promise you that this wonderful sandwich contains no traces of liver. It is made with corned beef, onions, bacon, mustard and slices of pork, and is tasty, but decidedly meaty.
kaTSu-Sando Although we love getting our fill of sushi, we were only recently introduced to this Japanese sandwich, which sounds surprisingly delicious! Breaded and deepfried pork cutlets, sandwiched between thick slices of white bread, topped with shredded cabbage make up this greasy, yet super tasty sandwich.
Bánh Mì This Vietnamese sandwich literally means different kinds of bread, but it is usually served as a sub roll, filled with slices of pork or pork paté and topped with cucumbers, coriander and shards of pickled carrots. Yummy!
roTi John This Malaysian sandwich may have an unusual name, but it is extremely flavourful, and is one of our favourites on this list. An open-faced omelette sandwich, it is made with eggs, onions and lots of chillies, often adding minced meat to the omelette mixture. It’s pan-fried, and the finished dish looks like slices of baguette topped with an omelette.
ToaST haWaii Native to Germans, we aren’t sure about whether we love or hate Toast Hawaii. Averse to having anything sweet added to our savoury sandwiches, this is an open sandwich
>> If you like sweet sandwiches, the Toast Hawaii, with its fruit and meat combination, might work for you with a slice of toasted bread topped with a slice of ham, a ring of pineapple, a slice of cheese and a cherry. We aren’t jumping with joy, but we’re definitely intrigued.
peanut butter on one slice of white bread and marshmallow fluff on another, this sandwich is rich, gooey and the stuff that food dreams are made of!

yakiSoBa-Pan
Continuing our streak of sweet sandwiches, this American treat is a favourite with us. An unhealthy sandwich made by spreading
If you cringe at the idea of noodles being stuffed into a sandwich, what we are going to tell you next isn’t going to be pleasant. This
A snack sandwich (below) that is popular in Singapore, this one is sweet too. It is basically comprised of two slices of white bread sandwiched with a coconut and sugar spread. Doesn’t sound too bad, but hold on, as sometimes, an egg is thrown into it as well! A runny egg and coconut? No, thank you.
SandWicheS in MuMBai While you’re here, we also recommend trying their version of the Philly Cheese Steak (`289) — the sandwich is as delicious as they come. Where Kalpitam Apartments, Opp. Hawaiian Shack, Bandra (w)
You might swear by your neighbourhood, roadside sandwichwala, but if you want to try a new, and unique preparation, check these places out: The Bagel Shop: The Goan Chorizo sausage bagel at The Bagel Shop is as close to the Choripan as you’re going to get in Mumbai. It’s a simple preparation that uses a spicy version of the famed Goan sausages, with a dash of cream cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. The bagel, priced for `299, might be a bit expensive, but it will be worth your money. Where The Bagel Shop, Carter Road, Bandra (w) Between Breads: With a variety of delicious burgers and sandwiches
on offer, it’s not surprising that Between Breads is on our list. Want something like the Barros Luco? Opt for the Beef Cheeseburger (`219).
But, if you want to go all out and try some hearty varieties such as the Chivito or the Leberkässemmel, opt for the Bacon Cheeseburger (`339).
The Sandwich Bar: Seafood sandwiches such as the Pan-bagnat, are hard to come across in Mumbai. However, Shalimar Hotel’s The Sandwich Bar is a great place to head to if you want to try unique varieties. They offer a make-yourown-sandwich service and tuna is one of the several options available. The fresh catch sandwich, which costs `165, can be made with tuna, salad and your choice of sauce. If you find yourself logging on to YouTube for your daily dose of entertainment, Yamini Walia has a list of the top five videos that you should watch over the weekend n Anaconda (my parents’ reaction): If the video for the song Anaconda by Nicky Minaj wasn’t shocking enough, YouTube user Superwoman made a video to showcase her parents’ reactions to the music video. The video is packed with humorous punches and the user herself plays the role of both her parents, with her dad’s role being the funniest. n Most Exercise Ever - Prem Aggan review: Have you seen the Fardeen Khan-starrer, Prem Aggan? Even if you haven’t, you should check out Kanan Gill’s and Biswa Kalyan Rath’s review of this film. From the best ‘Oh yeah’ moment to the best exercise song, Kanan and Biswa rip the film to shreds in the most hilarious manner. From all their reviews till date, this one takes the cake! n The Rakhri Zone: Jus Reign’s videos revolve around Sikhs
and their reactions to different situations. His videos are extremely funny and the Rakhri Zone is no less. This take on rakhi zone, which is basically the Indian version of the friend zone, will leave you in splits. With over 2 lakh views, the video is already a rage on YouTube. n Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel in Friends: Ever since Friends, the famous television series, wrapped up 10 years ago, we have all been cravi ng for a Friends reunion. Well, Jimmy Kimmel fulfilled our wish (sort of), as he managed to get Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow to act out a scene with him in a set modelled on Monica’s (played by Courtney) famous apartment. Even though we missed the boys, this semi-reunion still made our day.

THE PHonES
THE WATCHES
Samsung Galaxy Note Edge: This 5.6-inch phablet from Samsung created the most buzz, if not for its specifications, then for its design. The Edge features a thin, curved screen strip that rolls over the right edge of the phablet. It serves almost as a second screen and you can use the curved edge to reject calls, keep a tab on your social media feed and set short-cuts. There are several other interesting uses — it can work as a sports ticker or a list of trending Twitter hashtags and in applications such as your camera, it can display an extra list of control buttons. It’s quite similar to the Note 4 (which was also launched at the event) as both feature a Snapdragon 805 chipset, a smarter S-pen and Cornilla Gorrila Glass 3. The only differences are that the Edge has a marginally smaller screen (the Note 4 has a 5.7-inch display) and the battery, the Edge runs on a 3,000 mAh battery, while the Note 4 features a 3,220mAh power source. Both phablets are expected to be priced above `50,000.
Asus ZenWatch: You might argue over whether a smartwatch has enough functionality to be worth the purchase, but you can’t argue over how amazing the ZenWatch looks. The watch features a leather strap and a rectangular dial, with curved edges and a display that is set to detect the ‘OK Google’ hot-word by default. The best part is that unlike the Samsung Gear Watch, the ZenWatch supports all Android phones (4.3 and above), with some extra features thrown in if you pair it with an Asus phone.
Sony Xperia Z3: The beautiful Sony Xperia Z3, which several people trashed for being released just six months after the launch of the Z2, rewards you for buying into the Sony ecosystem. If you own a PlayStation and are looking for a new phone, the Z3 is the one you should consider. The 5.2-inch screen phone, which runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), lets you use the phone as the screen for your PlayStation game, instead of a television. So, you can use your PlayStation to process the games and stream them on to your phone’s screen, through WiFi, which you can then play via the controller. The phone shares the design
elements of the Z2, minus the rounded edges and thinner bezels. It also features a 20.7 megapixel back camera, with increased wideangle capabilities. The Z3, which is expected to launch in India by the end of October, doesn’t have a price-point yet, but you can expect it to retail around `40-45,000 — the current price of the Z2. Lumnia 830: The Lumnia 830 is not a distinctive phone by any measure, but if a great camera is high on your list of what you want in a phone, then it is worth checking out. The 5-inch screen Windows phone features a 10-megapixel PureView camera, with top-of-the-range Zeiss optics. The phone
Designer Dream
is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon quadcore processor and features a IPS-LCD display. It is expected to launch next month at around `26,000. Moto X: Motorola’s new phones and watch (below) weren’t launched at IFA, but at a separate Motorola event. While the new Moto G received only a minimal upgrade, the 2014 Moto X promises to be a gamechanger. The 5.2-inch screen phone has a better 1080p HD screen resolution, as well as a newer Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor. The phone has one of the best voice command features, with the ability to create your own commands such as ‘Wake up phone.’ The voice commands even let you work with non-Google applications such as Whatsapp and Facebook. Perhaps one of the most interesting features for us, was knowing that you can name your Moto X! The phone will be releasing later this month.

ust in time for the festive season that will take the city by storm this October, Aza’s third outlet (they have two others at Altamount Road and Juhu), is a visual delight. Stocking only designer-wear, be prepared to see your jaw drop as you make your way to their three-storey outlet. Occupying prime position on Turner Road, the building is imposing. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a reception area, adjacent to sprawling display of clothes, shoes and accessories. Situated on the ground floor is their pret section, where you can shop for tunics, shirts, informal kurtas and dresses, along with statement accessories, clutches and shoes. The displays are uncluttered, with garments dotting free-standing racks. Given that their merchandise on this floor is labelled as informal, a lot of the pieces are still a little too heavy and embellished for our liking. You can find a range of merchandise from young and upcoming designers, and we especially loved the collections by Urvashi Joneja, Divya Sheth and Pankaj and Nidhi. Tucked away in the basement is the menswear collection, with everything ranging from semi-formal shirts and blazers, to bandhgala jackets, suits and kurtas. The menswear section
Moto 360: Moto 360 was one of the most anticipated launches and though, just like with the Motorola phones, the launch didn’t take place at the IFA, it is still worth a mention. The LG G Watch R might have stolen some of Motorola’s thunder with a watch-like design and a beautiful circular display, but the 360 holds it own with its fabulous, minimalistic design and a stylish watch holder that works as a charging station. The watch has an optical heart-rate monitor that not only reads your current heart rate, but also keeps track of your overall exercise time. The 360 comes with a noise-cancelling microphone that Motorola claims will help it recognise your voice commands better. Motorola has confirmed that the watch will be launching in India at the end of October, though the pricepoint isn’t clear. It retails for around `15,000 in the US and knowing Motorola’s aggressive pricing in India, you can expect it to cost close to the same amount here as well.
WHErE Aza, 24, Turner Road, Bandra (W) ConTACT 9833281197 houses more wearable clothes in my opinion, and their range of fabrics, prints and colours was very pleasing. The last level, which houses their bridal section, is where the magic happens. Packed to the brim with designer bridal wear, right from traditional lehengas, saris and kurtas, to the more
contemporary gown-saris, Aza is every bride’s dream. Full of pieces to cater to every occasion, they stock an impressive range of bridal wear for both men and women. But, what we appreciated the most was the small alcove in front of the trial rooms, where luxurious sofas were surrounded by rails of clothing on either side. While I trooped through the store, what looked like a bride-to-be, tried on outfit after outfit, as her family and friends sat back, debating the merits of each one, and a sales assistant stood by to help. While a lot of the clothes were too elaborate, my favourite from the bridal section had to be Sabyasachi, with Rohit Bal’s bridal wear coming in a close second. Aza will also stock collections hot off the Lakmé Fashion Week runways, making it a one-stop-shop for all your designer wear needs. Apart from the designers that we’ve mentioned, Aza also stocks collections by designers such as Amit Agarwal, Manish Malhotra, Gauri & Nainika, Sonaakshi Raaj, Varun Bahl and Wendell Rodricks. Prices at Aza are steep, and vary as per designer, so unless you have deep pockets, there’s no point heading here. But, if you do have a big budget on your side, this is where you want to spend it.

Food Heaven after a successful run in Pune, Terttulia recently opened an outlet in Mumbai. Yamini Walia visited the restaurant to see if it lives up to expectations
L
ocated in Shivaji Park, very close to the sea, Terttulia has managed to find a great location. The restaurant is divided into two halves, giving you the option of casual as well as fine dining. The ambiance at Terttulia is dominated by dim lights and soft hues, which makes it perfect for a romantic evening. Since I visited them for dinner, I chose to sit in the fine dining area. We tried almost all of their starters and were left pretty impressed with what they had on offer. From all their starters, the Sautéed Basa in Chilli Pesto (`345) and the Karari Roti (`155) stood out. The karari roti is a unique offering and I must say, it’s a successful inclusion to their menu. Topped with lemon butter, the roti is quite large, but extremely light and crunchy. You cannot leave the restaurant without trying this! The basa is also a good option; it is rich >> Terttulia has cosy and charming interiors, making it perfect for a romantic dinner in flavour and melt-in-your-mouth. course, we couldn’t leave the restaurant Terttulia’s Pune outlet is famous for without trying their gorgeous looking their sangrias. So, how could I leave desserts. We ordered the Creme Brûlée without trying one?! We opted for Cheese Cake (`245) and Gooey Terttulia’s Sunday Sangria (`415), which Chocolate Cake (`225) — both desserts totally lived up to its hype. But, it was left us speechless with their mindthe Watermelon Caiprioska (`415) that numbingly delicious flavours. stole the show. This drink is perfect for Everything at Terttulia, from the people who are not big fans of vodka. It contains just a hint of vodka and lots of food, and the service to the ambiance is top-notch. I tried almost everything on watermelon, but still manages to be the menu and there wasn’t a single dish strong and flavourful. that left me disappointed. However, I We tried their Spaghetti Agli Olio hope the quality of the food and drinks (`365), Sea Salt Rubbed Grilled Chicken don’t deteriorate with time. (`465), Three Mushroom Risotto (`415) and Fish n Chips (`435) as our main course. While I enjoyed all the dishes, Where Terttulia, Hotel Parkway, Ranade my favourites were the risotto and the Road Extension, Off Cadel Road, Beside fish. The risotto was very flavourful and Mayors Bungalow, Dadar Shivaji Park the mushrooms were cooked extremely well. After the amazing basa, the Fish n Contact 60020202 Chips didn’t disappoint either. WhAt’S Cooking? Scottish Salmon at PescaFresh
W
ant to eat like a royal? We tried the fish that was on the menu of the Royal Wedding in 2011, as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Luncheon in 2012 to check out PescaFresh, a fish delivery concept in the city that recently introduced Loch Duart, a Scottish salmon fish that they bring to India right from Scotland. Sangram Sawant, CEO & founder of PescaFresh, tells us, “At PescaFresh, we are committed to delivering fresh seafood with services that are unparalleled.” When we heard that, we were a bit skeptical. But, a delivery later, we were sold. A celebrity chef favourite, we couldn’t wait to cook and try this creamy textured fish. Pesca delivers it in a wellpackaged, white thermocol box, well-cleaned and sliced, ensconced in blue plastic over a bed of ice, keeping it fresh and making storage super simple. The pretty pink flesh is so flavourful, you don’t need to overdo it when you’re cooking — we tried it in a simple lemon cream dressing with herbs, which brought out the flavour of the salmon. It’s meaty, so a small piece will go a long way. PescaFresh launched in 2004, with Sangram explaining, “While working for a seafood distribution company in the US, I set in motion a unique business plan to launch a fresh, seafood retailing service. Soon, a shoestring business venture that started off as a boutique setup in central Mumbai, shaped up to become India’s first organised seafood distribution and retailing company. Today, we cater to over 20,000 households across the country.” Since ordering from PescaFresh was such a breeze, we wondered
how they got it done — how did they manage to send everything so well packaged, and so fresh? Sangram answered the question for us, explaining, “Our superior inventory management system ensures that we provide customers with the day’s catch. PescaFresh does not add any extra ingredients or preservatives to any of the seafood. Each catch is maintained at optimum temperatures over a bed of ice to maintain our freshness promise of ‘From Shore to Door.’” They also retail through several outlets across the city and have a variety of fresh fish, cuts and offers that we think you should make the most of as soon as possible. a new confectionery venture, Piece of Cake, recently set up shop in Matunga. Shirley Mistry tells you whether their goodies are worth sampling
D
essert and confectionery ventures are a dime-adozen, but only a handful make for memorable experiences. So, when we were asked to try a few treats from Piece of Cake’s comprehensive menu, we weren’t really jumping with joy. However, as we later discovered, their baked goods are reliable options. We tried a few cupcakes, including the Vanilla, Red Velvet and Belgian Chocolate flavours (6 for `360). The vanilla and red velvet cupcakes were average, ticking the ‘moist’ and ‘flavourful’ boxes, but it was the Belgian chocolate ones that we loved most. Instead of a sicklysweet icing, these cupcakes had a chocolate mousse icing, making them really indulgent, and worth your while. We also tried their crownies (flavoured brownies). The Choco Chip, Peanut Butter and Oreo Crownies (6 for `360) were spot-on when it came to flavour, but lacked texture. Instead of being gooey, rich and moist, these crownies were dry and crumbly. However, this may have something to do with the miniature samplers that we were sent to try and we hope that the fullsized crownies deliver better texture. Their chocolate and shortbread cookies are delicious, and worth biting into. The chocolate cookies are gooey and delicious while the shortbread is melt-in-your-mouth. Lastly, we tried two full-sized cakes, the Belgian chocolate cake (`1,200/kg) and the Classic Red Velvet Cake (`1,200/kg). The Belgian cake was a simple chocolate cake, layered with chocolate mousse. Though it tasted alright, it lacked the intense chocolate flavour that we were craving. The red velvet cake, on the other hand, was delightful. Definitely the most delicious cake out of all the ones that we tried from Piece of Cake, it had a scrumptious, generous helping of tart-sweet cream cheese — a balance that most confectioners find hard to strike. Also, we cut into the cake a couple of hours after it had been delivered to us, and we were really impressed by how well the layers held up, making for an even, well-structured cake. Although they aren’t the best bakers in town, their cakes are definitely worth the price they are retailed at, making them a reliable, fail-safe option. Where 6, A Block, Lakshmi Nivas, J.K. Australian actor, Luke Bracey, talks to Yamini Walia about his film, The November Man, what it was like working with Pierce Brosnan and his upcoming projects
L
ast week, we told you about The November Man and what Pierce Brosnan’s experiences were on set. This week, Luke Bracey, who made his debut with the soap opera, Home and Away and recently starred in The November Man, is giving us his side of the story. The actor is also going to be part of the film adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s best-selling novel, In The Best Of Me. Read on to find out more about this star in the making.
What inspired you to work on The November Man? The cast of the film and the opportunity to share screen space with Pierce Brosnan, whom I have idolised since my childhood, was my foremost reason. Then of course, the script. Tell us about your character. I play the role of David Mason, a CIA agent who is pitted against his own mentor and former friend. It is the ultimate cat and mouse chase. Mason wants to better himself and prove his worth. What was the experience of working with Pierce Brosnan like? What did you learn from him? There is so much to learn from this man! At 61years-old, he is simply superb. I remember sitting on set one day and there it was, James Bond chastising me. It took me an hour to absorb that moment and be fully present. Some of the things
that I have learnt from him is dedication, professionalism and a passion for cinema. Are there any memorable experiences from the making of the film that you would like to share with us? Some of the stunts in the movie are jaw-dropping and needed a lot of planning. Shooting in a busy street and then bombing a car is enthralling. But, Roger Donaldson and Mark Moltram (our stuntman) had some great visions to shoot. It was a pleasure moving around with a gun and playing the character of David.
>> Luke Bracey enjoyed performing the stunts in the movie
Did you always want to be an actor? Tell us how you bagged your first role. I always wanted to be a professional rugby player, I happened to audition for a soap opera called Home and Away and bagged the lead role. I would say I was destined to be an actor. Tell us about your upcoming projects. I am going to portray the iconic Johnny Utah in Alcon’s retelling of cult-favourite film, Point Break. I am also a part of the cast for the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel, In the Best of Me; in which I play a wrong-side-of-the-tracks teen who falls in love with the daughter of one of the town’s most prestigious personalities. It hits theaters on October 17, 2014.

Former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran had "pressurised" and "forced" Chennai-based telecom promoter C Sivasankaran to sell his stakes in Aircel and two subsidiary firms to Malaysian firm Maxis Group in 2006, the CBI told a special court, yesterday. "Accused number one (Dayanidhi Maran) forced Sivasankaran to sell his companies. He (Sivasankaran) sold his three firms to Malaysia's Maxis Communication Berhad, accused number six," the CBI told Special Judge O P Saini during arguments on consideration of charge sheet filed in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. He said, "Several issues relating to Sivasankaran's firms were kept pending by Dayanidhi Maran, who was the then Telecom Minister, and no decision was being taken on them. It said that as soon as Maxis Group bought Sivasankaran's firms, all the pending issues were cleared by Dayanidhi Maran giving undue benefit to the Malaysian company.

“T
he Asian economy has much to offer to the globe. The Asian continent has a demographic advantage being home to a young, skilled and productive work force. Secondly, the continent boosts of a pool of natural resources which needs to be tapped to give impetus to its manufacturing. Thirdly, technical expertise required for any manufacturing or service industries are intrinsic in the Asian continent. The combination of a demographic base coupled with access to natural resources and technological expertise inherent in Asia makes it the centre piece of the globe. However, the Asian developmental model lacks access to quality infrastructure, education and health. The answer to its shortcomings lies in global integration by encouraging international trade and investment. However, trade protectionist policies of major economies of the continent possess trade barriers. There is a pressing need to revisit the global trade regime to create equal opportunities for all economies to benefit from global trade and growth”, said General (Retd) Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, at the inauguration ceremony of the 4th edition of the Global Economic Summit on the theme “Asia: Powering Global Markets” jointly organised by MVIRDC World Trade Centre and All India Association of Industries. The Summit which opened yesterday at the WTC in Mumbai will continue till Saturday and is expected to facilitate guidelines and policy frameworks for Asia to grow and prosper as a continent. Outlining the path for the Indian economy, Dr. Singh said that India is gradually picking up from its sluggish growth prospects witnessed recently. It is of paramount importance to note that manufacturing sector is the strength of any economy which needs to be revived. The Government of India needs to revive its manufacturing sector through government intervention, incentives, subsidies, tax holidays and availability of funds. Secondly, India needs to raise its agricultural productivity. Self sufficiency in agriculture ensures food security for all besides being a support base for the manufacturing industry. Also, the progress of the service sector is a barometer of growth for the Indian economy. The XV World Trade Point Federation General Assembly is also being jointly held with the Summit. Bruno Masier, President, World Trade Point Federation (WTPF) said that the main objective of the WTPF lies in giving impetus to international trade and facilitating the growth of global

SMEs form the focus sector of the WTPF thereby encouraging their participation in international trade”. Ghazi Abu Nahl, Chairman, World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) and Chairman, World Trade Center Holdings (Cyprus) Ltd congratulated WTC Mumbai and AIAI for organizing the prestigious Summit. The Summit presents a platform for sharing learning lessons besides formulating business strategies in the context of the day’s challenging macroeconomic environment. WTC Mumbai is one of the prominent members of the WTCA which comprises of 330 WTCs across 100 countries. It is a matter of pride to note that there are 20 WTCs in India serving the business community. Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Founder and Chair, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) said that with the advent of globalisation products and services cannot be said to be “made in a country” rather “made in the world” with Asia forming a prominent player in today’s powering and changing global markets. Jean-Luc Schneider, Deputy Director, Economics Department, The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) enumerated on the OECD exercise of “How the world will look like in 2060?” The OECD forecasts global trade and growth to shrink to 2.5% from the current 3.5%. By the year 2060, the global trade intensity is expected to rise with share of trade in GDP rising to nearly 60%. As of date, 85% of global trade share comprises of OECD countries. However, by 2060 global trade is expected to shift to the Asian economies. As for the qualitative changes in global trade, the manufacturing base is expected to shift to China and India. While China will be a prominent electronic goods ex-
porter; India shall export business services. Also, the world shall witness enhancement in quality education and efficiency. However, difference in education and efficiency across regions may trigger wage inequalities. The year 2060 will create a thriving need for “international distribution policy” and “international cooperation on taxation” due to counterproductive laws, global value chains and cross country spill over’s of trade issues. The paradox of globalisation is that there will be increased international cooperation with national policies being less effective in the global world. However, global integration is expected to give way to conflict of in-
terests amongst nations, free riding on trade agreements, international collusion, etc. Yonov Frederick Agah, Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organization (WTO) said that WTO and WTC share a common good of achieving prosperity through trade. From the year 2000 to 2008 global trade has grown at an average rate of 6%. However, it witnessed a decline during the economic crisis of 2008 to recover in the year 2011 with Asia being an important partner of global trade. The role of the WTO is international trade lies in keeping protectionism under check, improving global business environment, increasing trade stability and disciplin-
ing non tariff barriers. Touching upon the trade facilitation agreement Agah said that with the passage of the agreement it will be faster and cheaper to do cross country business. The cross country business may touch US$ 1 trillion creating 25 million jobs. The agreement is expected to cut trade costs by 10% to 15%. It shall ensure better participation of developing countries in global trade. Although the agreement has not reached fruition, India has signaled its compliance in making the agreement a success. The agreement has been wrongly perceived as a bottleneck in growth which actually has many economic benefits to offer. Asia is an important participant and a prominent beneficiary in the agreement. Yaduvendra Mathur, CMD, ExportImport Bank of India said that the Asian economies have witnessed growth in recent times. However, the continent suffers from inadequate infrastructure. The GDP growth of Asia has been constrained by 4% due to lack of infrastructure. Secondly, Mathur noted the need for enhancing intra-SAARC trade. Earlier, in his welcome remarks Kamal Morarka, Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre said that the Indian economy is gradually looking upon from its decadal low growth. The new Government has revived sentiments in growth, industry and trade. The country is expected to witness exponential growth in international trade in the years to come. Further, Morarka said that the GES is a flagship event of WTC Mumbai and AIAI. The summit has witnessed participation from over 500 delegates comprising of 100 overseas delegates from across 40 countries. He encouraged the audience to benefit from the deliberations and discussions of the three day summit. The Summit Handbook on “Asia: Powering Global Markets” and the Export-Import Bank of India’s Research Study titled “Potential for Enhancing Intra-SAARC Trade: A Brief Analysis” were released during the summit. Vijay Kalantri, Vice Chairman, World Trade Centre Mumbai and President, All India Association of Industries while proposing the vote of thanks said Asia is the next power house.

egastar Amitabh Bachchan has commenced preparations for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's next production venture to be directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Besides the 71-year-old actor, the film, which is a story about a chess player, also stars Farhan Akhtar. Bachchan says he is enjoying the pre-shooting sessions and thinks it is a great exercise for the entire star cast of the movie.
"Our work on the next film with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has begun with class like readings and discussions, on table. It is a wonderful exercise to be able to go through an entire script with the entire cast," Bachchan posted on his blog. "Yet have some reserve stored up for the final moment when we shall all be facing the camera, instead of a written and bound script, with that ominous looking producer Vinod, looking down upon us with fierce and hard workman like expressions," he added. Bachchan has earlier worked with Chopra in 2007 film 'Eklavya: The Royal Guard'. This is the first collaboration between the actor and Nambiar, best known for helming 'Shaitan'.

"I respect marriage as an institution. But there is time for it. I will do it 'aaram se'. I have films to do, besides acting I want to do a lot of other things which I can't talk about now," she told PTI in an interview. For now, Bipasha is keeping her fingers crossed for the success of her latest release 'Creature 3D'. Her last two films – 'Aatma' and 'Humshakals' did not do too well at the box
office. "I was hurt when 'Aatma' did not do well. I think the film was not promoted properly. The feedback that I got from the people is that they were not ready to see me in the role of a mother but I don't regret doing that movie. "'Humshakals' was a regret right from the word go. I don't have anything against the film. I was not aware about the story idea... Didn't know what I was playing and how it will turn out.”So when I don't know about the film and my role why should I promote it?" she added. Bipasha, 35, started her Bollywood career in 2001 with 'Ajnabee'.

Would not have made ‘Finding Fanny’ without Naseer: Homi N
EW DELHI: Director Homi Adajania says he would not have made his English satire 'Finding Fanny' without Naseeruddin Shah, who plays an oddball postman in the movie. Naseer's character sets out on a journey to find his childhood love Stephanie 'Fanny' Fernandes with the help of four other people. "Naseer bhai was always my first choice for the film. I have replaced other characters but if Naseer bhai would have said no to me I would not have made this film. He liked my script and we laughed a lot after reading it," Homi, who had also worked with the veteran actor in his debut film 'Being Cyrus', said. The filmmaker said he wanted to make 'Finding Fanny' before his last love story 'Cocktail' but he delayed it because Naseer did not have dates. "The reason I didn't make it at that time is because Naseer didn't have dates. We were almost ready to start the project in two months. But I
dropped it because my wife said if you don't have your desired cast then drop it. I started making 'Cocktail' and it was a blessing in disguise because it gave me the kind of money we wanted for Fanny," he said. Homi says every song and sequence in the film is apt with the script even Dimple Kapadia's prosthetic bum. "The reason that I wanted to have her big bum because she is hiding her painful secret with her appearances and behaviour. I went to her and told her that you need to put a big bum and she readily agreed to do that," he said.

Recently you refused Vikas Bahl’s ‘Shaandaar’. Yes. The makers were skeptical about me completing my work on schedule and it really hurt me because I have done more than 165 films and I am a completely professional actor. It’s their loss.
Your home production ‘Abhinay Chakra’ is eagerly
awaited. Yes. I am excited about the film and I play an idealistic cop in the film and I have done a lot of daring action sequences. Director Deepankar Senapati has done a brilliant job.
Tell us something about your forthcoming films ‘Jagaa Jasoos’ and ‘Kill Dil’. I am not at liberty to tell you. All I can tell you is I play Ranbir Kapoor’s father in the film ‘Jagaa Jasoos’ who goes missing and the young talented detective played by Ranbir goes hot on his trail to trace him. Anurag Basu is the director of the film and it also stars Katrina Kaif. And in ‘Kill Dil’ I play a negative character called Bhaiyaji who is the antagonist in the film and I am playing such a role after my film ‘Shikari’. Shaad Ali directs the film and Aditya Chopra is the producer. Ranveer Singh,
Ali Zafar and Parineeti Chopra also star in the film. Recently you refused the Hindi remake of Mahesh Manjrekar’s Marathi hit film ‘Shikshanachya Aicha Gho’. Any specific reason.
Yes. I felt like it was an art house film and I didn’t want to take a risk at this point of my career. My good friend Salman was after me to do this role but I politely refused.
Your completed films like ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’ and ‘Run Bhola Run’ are awaiting release. Yes. I have done my job in the films and now its upto the makers to take a call on the release of the film. Ravi Chopra, the producer of ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’ is not keeping well and hence the delay. We wish Chi Chi all the best for his future endeavours!

ast week’s release Mary Kom kicked off some interesting debates on social media platforms. The two sides were: Why can’t Bollywood make an authentic biopic? Especially since the subject is alive. The other was: Why should a Bollywood film, that too, one produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali – be expected to be authentic? (He’s the man who had made his Paro and Chandramukhi dance together to Dola re dola in Devdas, inviting gasps of outrage from Bengali viewers.) There are many issues here. One is the severe lack of heroes and heroines whose lives can be turned into movies – people that woefully insular Bollywood has even heard of. Hollywood had made one of its most famous biopics Erin Brokovich on an ordinary woman who fought an extraordinary battle against a corporate giant and won. There are many such known and unknown warriors in India too, but Bollywood is not interested in them. At one time, Kiran Bedi Deepa Gahlot has inspired a few films, but no other living woman. There have been no films on the Nehru family, because nobody wants to get into a censor or legal tangle. One of the scenes will see the daredevil performing a water ski stunt while being hooked to a seaplane and the film’s team is too proud of it, as no film in the world has attempted a similar sequence before. Roshan says, "In 'Bang Bang' I have pushed myself to the extreme. This sequence called for mental and physical tenacity. The rush that I experienced while training and executing the sequence was out of the world. I was hooked to a seaplane while I did the stunt. I had trained non-stop to even attempt the sequence." "This is the first time a shot like this has been shot for any film in the world and we can boast that a Bollywood film, 'Bang Bang', has recorded this feat," says Siddharth Anand, the director of 'Bang Bang'. An official remake of Hollywood film 'Knight And Day', 'Bang Bang' also stars Katrina Kaif and is slated to release on October 2.
world remembers it still, over 30 years later. He faced a quite a few problems in India, but since the film had the Indian government’s support, nothing came of the protests. Recently, a suitably Bollywoodised biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was made on star athlete Milkha Singh, decades after he had hung up his boots. Have there been no great sportspersons between Milkha and Mary Kom? Why did Bollywood ignore P T Usha? Hollywood has undoubtedly got the biopic right, and they don’t necessarily look for subjects who can be glamourised. If the film needs to be grim and gritty, that’s the style used. Is it any surprise then, that there have been so few films made on real life heroes/heroines and so many on the lives of gangsters and conmen? There are more films coming up on every underworld figure imaginable. Maybe because films on criminals leave room for item numbers, and today Bollywood cannot make a big budget film without a skimpily clad woman dancing.
25 Ajay Devgn readies for ‘Action Jackson’ A
ctor Ajay Devgn, who impressed not only audiences but also police officials with his role in latest flick 'Singham Returns', will now gear up for Prabhudheva's 'Action Jackson' and sources claim that the deadly Devgn did not even take a single day's break between the two projects. Devgn, who had developed an impressive physique for his role as Bajirao Singham, will be seen baring his torso in the next film and for that, the actor went on a rigorous workout routine to get the desired effect. A look from 'Action Jackson' was recently unveiled in which Devgn is seen showing off his toned physique while in a combat position, with the Shiva tattoo on his chest displayed prominently. Devgn, who made his acting debut with 'Phool Aur Kaante', is one of the few Bollywood actors who is known for his action roles as well as his performance oriented roles in films like 'Company' and 'Zakhm'.
Irrfan Khan out of ‘Welcome To Karachi’?
W
e had reported some days back that Irrfan Khan and Arshad Warsi were to visit London to start shooting for 'Welcome To Karachi'. However sources suggest that 'The Lunchbox' actor never boarded the flight and instead called up the film’s producer Vashu Bhagnani and said he would join the shoot next month. This irked Bhagnani so much that he asked Irrfan to step aside and no longer be a part of the film. It has worried Bhagnani because he cannot get another actor at a short notice. There are chances that the cast and crew of 'WTK' may have to return to Mumbai if they don’t find Irrfan’s replacement. 'Welcome To Karachi' had gone on floors on September 5. The film also stars Arshad Warsi and Vrajesh Hirjee.

It's a battle royal for India against Serbia
Indian Davis Cup team doubles players Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna during a practice session ahead of their World Group Play off tie against Serbia at KSLTA stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.
By Amanpreet Singh
B
ANGALORE: India face one of the most ferocious Davis Cup challenges at home as nothing less than their best would be required to challenge world number two Serbia, who will test skill and strength of the hosts even without world number one Novak Djokovic, here from tomorrow. India last qualified for the elite 16-nation Group in 2010 but were knocked out in the first round by this very Serbian team the next year in Novi Sad, where the visitors suffered a 1-4 rout. Now is the payback time but it is easier said than done. Despite the absence of Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic and Victor Troicki, the visiting side poses a serious challenge to India, whose players are struggling on the circuit of late. India's top player singles Somdev Devvarman has had forgettable last six months during which he struggled to cross the first and second rounds on the ATP circuit. On the other side, Dusan Lajovic, who will spearhead Serbia's singles challenge, is in great shape having played top-tier tournaments with reasonable success if not great. The world number 61 has lost only four matches where he was competing against players, ranked lower
than him. Most of his defeats have come when he was contended by players ranked between 30 and 40. Somdev, though is coming into the tie very match-sharp after reaching both singles and doubles finals of the Shanghai Challenger. He has spent considerable hours on court while competing and his ability to stretch his opponents is beyond doubt. At Davis Cup, Somdev has always come up with his best and India would hope that he manages to give India one point on Friday. He had lost against Lajovic when they
competed last year in Italy but that was on clay, a surface which suited more Lajovic than the Indian. India must target Serbia's second singles player Filip Krajinovic, ranked 107. If Somdev and Yuki Bhambri can tame the 22-year-old, India have a golden opportunity to re-enter World Group. Krajinovic is also a tough customer with two Challenger titles to show this season and a couple of good performances at the top level but he is one link, India could capitalize on. Yuki, who began the season well by winning the
Chennai challenger, missed the good part of the calendar due to a heel injury. He has not played many matches after his comeback in late July and it remains to be seen how he fares now. However, with an expected full house at KSLTA Stadium, cheering on Somdev and Yuki, the Serbians are sure to feel the heat. If Krajonovic can be defeated on the opening day, India will have the opportunity to take lead on the second day when Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna will clash with Nenad Zimonjic and Illija Bozolzac.
We have the self belief to break Asian Games jinx: Walsh By Saumojyoti S Choudhury
N
EW DELHI: Looking to break the 16year-old Asian Games 'gold' jinx, Indian men's hockey team coach Terry Walsh said that the current lot of players have the "self belief" to come up trumps in the upcoming quadrennial event in Incheon, South Korea. Walsh said unlike the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Sardar Singh-led side has the ability to turn the 2010 Guangzhou bronze into a gold at the Asian Games to be held from September 19 to October 4. "One of the really important area is self belief. That's very closely linked with confidence and the willingness and ability to play the level without the fear of losing," Walsh told PTI ahead of the team's departure for Incheon later tonight. "Confidence is a huge part of performance. Confidence and anxiety are very closely related and that's something you have to guard. You need to know the difference between being confident and being anxious. "The problem was that the players had no belief that they could win the gold (at the Commonwealth Games). It's a process of development, it doesn't
happen overnight. But I think these group of players sincerely believe that if they play to their potential they can beat against Malaysia, Korea, China, Pakistan, Japan and win the title," the Australian said. Insisting that India and Korea are the teams to beat in the Asian Games, Walsh said they have improved upon their defensive skills post the World Cup earlier this year. "Teams are always going to concede late goals, early goals and goals in the middle period. But i think we have improved as a defensive structure. I think we are getting better at knowing on how to play during situations and there comes the business of self belief. "You got to understand what you are trying to do and believe in your abilities. I think we are growing and leaning those things," he said. Walsh feels going by form India's has a realistic chance of lifting the Asian Games title and earn a direct qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics. "My view is that we are progressing really well. There is a considerable difference in our level of performance from pre-World Cup to post-Commonwealth Games," the coach assessed.
Presence of Paes, the most successful player in the history of Indian tennis, is assuring for India but it remains to be seen how he combines again with Bopanna as they have not played together for long. Zimonjic and Bozolzac had beaten most formidable pairings, the legendary Mike and Bob Bryan in Serbia's 2013 Davis Cup campaign even as later they had lost to Canada and Czech Republic. Paes, recalled to the squad in place of Saketh Myneni, feels India surely have a chance to end as winners in the tie.
29 Davis ties are won through singles says Vijay on Somdev comments
By B D Narayankar
BANGALORE: Former India ace Vijay Amritraj disagreed with country's top singles player Somdev Devvarman's take that India's Davis Cup chances against the mighty Serbia will hinge on doubles pair of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna. "Let me put it this way. You cannot win a Davis Cup tie solely depending on doubles. You would rather lose 1-4! But you can win a Davis Cup match with good singles performance. There are four singles matches. The bottomline is you have to win three out of five rubbers. It doesn't matter how you do it," a forthright Vijay told PTI in an exclusive interview ahead of the marquee clash tomorrow. "I think the key element will be winning one of the first two singles on the first day. We have to win one of those ... which I think we can," younger of the two Amritraj brothers, said ahead of the launching of his Reserve Wine Collection with Grover Zampa Vineyards here today. On Yuki Bhambri playing the first singles, Amritraj said he would have ideally wanted Somdev play the first match and beating the Serbia's No 2 player. "I would have loved to see Som playing the first match and we go up 1-0. That would have been be the ideal script I would have liked to write." Yuki will open India's Davis Cup campaign against Serbia, drawn against visiting side's No 2 player Dusan Lajovic for the first singles match.
Drop Fletcher, bring in Vengsarkar, Shastri: Engineer M
UMBAI: Former India stumper Farokh Engineer wants Duncan Fletcher axed as the Indian team's chief coach, and the appointment of Ravi Shastri and Dilip Vengsarkar to guide the team after the 3-1 drubbing Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men received in the five-Test series in England. "Ravi has done extremely well. He has motivated the boys, he is a dynamic character. In fact, he should oversee all cricket. Not only one day cricket, he should oversee Test cricket as well," said the former Test keeper here today after inaugurating Cricket Club of India's indoor academy. Former India all-rounder Shastri was roped in as the team director in overall charge of team for the ODI series that followed and which India won 3-1,
though the under-fire Fletcher continued in his Former captain post. Vengsarkar has served as chief selector in the past. "I think along with Ravi, you should have someone like Dilip Vengsarkar. They have both played cricket together. They both know the game inside out," said England-based Engineer.

rior to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, all and sundry spoke about leaving a legacy after the conclusion of the Games, which effectively translated to hasten the spreading of sports in the country. The participating India athletes did their bit and for the first time ever, the sizable Indian contignent breached the 100 medal mark. India in 2010, had a huge contingent as the the host nation with 495 athletes competing in 21 disciplines. Cut to 2014 – Glasgow. India fielded 224 members in the Glasgow Games participating in 14 out of 17 disciplines, which included seven para-athletes and 90 officials and ended with a paltry 64 medals with most of the shooters disappointing and finishing fifth in the medals tally behind hosts Scotland. No doubt, certain disciplines like archery and tennis, which contributed a chunk of medals for India in 2010 Delhi were removed from the Glasgow Games along with Greco-Roman style of wrestling. Incheon is a good opportunity, and having two major events within the span of few months would augur well for India. However, the downsizing of the contingent to 679 by pruning the number of managers at the behest of the the sports ministry has raised the ire of several associations. While the government of India is waging a cold war against China and scoring brownie points with Japan, it stands no competition against China in a whole lot of disciplines. Games and Guangzhou, 2010 was there for all to see. As the Asiad host in 2010, China won a staggering 416 medals that included 199 gold medals while runners-up South Korea ended with 232 medals, which just showcases the gap between two nations. India finished with a sombre 65 medals, In Busan they had won 316 medals while India bagged 53 and ended eighth. The year 1990 was the changing point for China when they adopted the Soviet style approach of not just producing athletes but producing champions. And their two-decade preparation paid off in Beijing in 2008 Olympics, as the hosts won a whopping 51 gold compared to 36 of USA. This was the first time where China overtook USA in the gold tally. It is unlikely that India will ever emulate the Chinese success story due to the huge investments made by the Chinese establishment, but the apt use of men, money and mind is what India should aim to do in the future. India should take a cue avoid playing spoiler rather be an able planner. The unleashed Chinese dragon is breathing fire and coming up with excellent results in sporting arenas, here, there and everywhere. In contrast to the Indian approach of one step forward, two steps backward the Chinese have proved their undoubted sporting pedigree.

UMBAI: Ending more than one-and-a-half year-old impasse in Indian boxing officialdom, a new body headed by industrialist Sandeep Jajodia was elected here today for a four-year term in the elections conducted via a secret ballot in the presence of two observers from world body AIBA. While Jajodia, representing Chhattisgarh BA, was elected unopposed as President of Boxing India (BI) in the elections in which 33 units took part, Jay Kowli of Maharashtra was elected as SecretaryGeneral in a three- cornered contest in which he polled the highest number of votes (32), said AIBA's Indiabased observer Kishen Narsi. Also elected as treasurer was Hemanta Kumar Kalita of Assam, who defeated two other rivals by garnering 41 votes, said Narsi, who was the AIBA observer along with AIBA's legal manager Cliodhna Guy who had flown down from Lausanne, Switzerland, to oversee the elections. Narsi announced the results after Returning Officer Justice (retd) D K Deshmukh, who had a "pressing commitment" in an arbitration matter, had to leave early. Ten VicePresidents and a seven-member Executive Council were also declared elected. Narsi, however, said as far as the Indian boxers' participation in the Asian Games, starting in South Korea next week-end, is con-
cerned, things have to become clearer. "Thirteen boxers' names have been sent to the Asian Games Organising Committee. They have been training hard in Patiala and Delhi. The present situation (about their participation) is not clear. "A process has been followed and its results will be sent to the AIBA Executive Council (for clearance). But there's time as boxing events start only on the 23rd." Narsi, who was part of the ad-hoc committee formed by IOA to run boxing affairs, had stepped down after being appointed by AIBA as observer for today's elections. Narsi said "The IOA was informed that two observers, myself and Cliodhna, will be the AIBA observers at the elections. They were asked to send their observer. None came. You have to ask them the reason." Boxing India had been floated by Jajodia and Udit Sheth of Transtadia who are the owners of the Indian boxing franchise in AIBA-promoted World Series Boxing (WSB), after the Indian Boxing Federation was first suspended in December 2012 and then suspended this year by the world body. In early May, Boxing India received provisional recognition from AIBA to form a new federation that would govern the sport in India.
The elected committee: President: Sandeep Jajodia (Elected unopposed), Secretary General: Jay Kowli - 32 votes, Treasurer: Hemanta Kumar Kalita - 41 votes, Vice-Presidents (10): Jaipal Singh - 49 votes, Nirwan Mukerjee (46), G V Ravi Raju (46), C K Jerath (45), C B Raje (43), Kalikanta Boro (42), T Meren Paul (38), Anil Kumar Bohidar (37), Dalpat Singh Arya (34), Rohan Khuante (34). Narang misses Olympic quota by a place G
RANADA: Gagan Narang missed out on an Olympic quota by just one place as he finished sixth in the finals of 50-metre rifle prone while Prakash Nanjappa and Jitu Rai narrowly missed out on finals of men's 10-metre air pistol in the 51st Shooting World Championships here today. After coming through the tough qualifying, Narang could total only 124.2 by the time the top 5, including the three medallists, were decided in the finals. Five Olympic quotas were on offer in the event. Another Indian, Hariom Singh, could not
make it to the finals after finishing 45th in the qualifying. Rai, who had already sealed a berth in the 2016 Rio Games with his silver medal-winning feat in men's 50-metre pistol event two days ago, failed to qualify in 10-metre air pistol as he was placed 10th in the
final qualifying, with Prakash Nanjappa a shade better at ninth at the CEAR Juan Carlos I shooting range. Both shot 181 each but Nanjappa had more X (bull's eye). Earlier, in the final elimination round of 50-metre rifle prone event, multiple medallist Narang was seventh after aggregating 625.5 with a series of 104.6 104.2 103.4 104.2 105.4 103.7. The Indians had been off to a poor start in the tournament with Beijing Olympic gold winner Abhinav Bindra failing to qualify in his pet event on the opening day of the competitions.

ASIAN GAMES PULL-OUT By Bharat Sharma
told PTI after conducting an 'adidas master class' with the city's budding players here today. The World No 12 further said: "It (the draw) robs India of a chance of getting two medals in the women's singles. It can't be a coincidence that the draw has been manipulated for three Asian Games in a row to assure India a medal. It is a wrong approach. Both Joshana and I are capable of winning medals." A semi-final appearance is enough for securing a bronze at the Asian Games. India's top male player Saurav Ghosal had won back-toback bronze in the 2006 and 2010 edition beating compatriots Ritwik Bhattacharya and Siddharth Suchde respectively. Besides Ghosal's medal, India had won a bronze each in the men's and women's category of the team championships. Pallikal and 21stranked Chinappa will meet in the quarterfinals on September 21 if they win their respective opener against China's Jinyue Gu and Korea's Sunmi Song.

EW DELHI: Upset with the "manipulative" Asian Games singles draw, India's top squash player Dipika Pallikal is "seriously considering" pulling out of the upcoming Incheon Games and possibly handing another setback to the country's medals tally. Pallikal and her longtime teammate Joshana Chinappa are drawn to meet in the quarterfinals a month after winning India's first ever squash medal at the Commonwealth Games, where they bagged the gold in the women's doubles. According to the competition rules, two players belonging to the same country cannot be in the same half of the draw. "It is disheartening to see the draw like this. Clearly the draw makers have not gone by the rules and put Joshana and I in the same quarter, let alone the half. I have already written to our federation to appeal against the manipulated draw but I am yet to get a reply. I am surely going to think about pulling out if the draw is not set right," Pallikal

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 ple. "Neither the evidence of the loving relationship or a relationship turned sour can assist this court to determine whether the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased," she said. The judge also reviewed evidence by neighbours who testified of hearing shots and screams, saying many "had their facts wrong". She said huge media coverage of the case could have affected some witnesses. "I am of the view that they failed to separate what they knew per-

NOT GUILTY P
RETORIA: "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius was found not guilty of the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp as a South African judge dismissed the most serious charges against him. "The state clearly has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder," Thokozile Masipa said, before dealing with the lesser charge of culpable homicide -- also known as manslaughter. "Viewed in its totality the evidence failed to establish that the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased let alone with premeditation," said Masipa. "Clearly he did not objectively foresee this as a possibility, that he would kill the person behind the door," she said as she later dismissed the lesser charge of common murder. The 27-year-old sat in the dock bowed and burying his head in his hands after the finding was made. Pistorius was charged with one count of murder and three firearms offences over the killing on Valentine's Day 2013. He could still be found guilty of culpable homicide, carrying anything from a suspended sentence to a lengthy prison stretch, or he could be acquitted. A charge of pre-
meditated murder would have meant a life sentence in South Africa's notoriously brutal jails.
EVASIVE Pistorius had grimaced and sniffled as he watched Masipa call Pretoria's High Court to order and read her verdict. Both defence and prosecution agree Pistorius killed the law graduate and model when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his upmarket Pretoria home. But the sprinter says he thought he was shooting at an intruder while Steenkamp was safely in bed. The prosecution says he killed her in a fit of rage after an argument. Judge Masipa moved quickly through her judgement, rejecting state evidence that pointed to an argument between the cou-

sonally or what they heard from other people or what they gathered from the media," she said. But Masipa also said Pistorius himself was "evasive" on the stand, and that his evidence showed "a number of defences, or apparent defences". "The accused was a very poor witness," she said. REALITY SHOW The verdict is the climax of a six-month murder trial that has cast a harsh spotlight on the fallen hero's private life.
Full of high drama, the trial has fed intense media interest worldwide, with live broadcasts veering into the realm of TV reality shows. During proceedings Pistorius has broken down, weeping and at times vomiting as he heard how the 29-year-old blonde's head "exploded" like a watermelon under the impact of his hollow-point bullets. On Thursday a man selling papers on a nearby street corner said he couldn't keep up with the demand. "Maybe you can come later,"
said Thomas Mdlule, the 29year-old vendor, rushing to count out change for his customers. Thursday's verdict is unlikely to be the end of the case. There will be more courtroom arguments before a sentence is handed down and, most likely, an appeal to a higher court. "The trial is the first leg of a multi-legged legal process. It's just the beginning," said lawyer David Dadic. Whatever happens, Pistorius's glittering sporting career is likely to be over.
