f yesterday's stormy surges, which saw huge waves crossing Mumbai's main roads along the water front at the Gateway of India, the Marine Drive, Haji Ali, Worli Seaface, Dadar Chowpatty, are any indication, today could see much more areas getting submerged. The reason being, yesterday's tide levels were predicted at 4.35 meters while today, we have been told to expect levels crossing 4.60 meters. Civic officials have alerted the concerned agencies because levels are expected to
rise steadily for the next three days. The National Disaster Response Force, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Civic Security and Civic Life Guards have been alerted. Civic officials say that the Municipal Commissioner

Study this abnormal phenomenon
Legislator Ashish Shelar has requested an oceanographic study of coastal Maharashtra by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests after today's ‘abnormal’ activity. Shelar said, “During the moderately high tide, water entered the city. The current and force of the tide was so heavy that huge stones were also lifted up and washed away with it. This is unprecedented and abnormal.” He added, “I spoke with Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and requested a study of the oceans, particularly along the coastal region of the state, as it is important for the sustainable development here. Tomorrow, we will also request the state government and start the official procedure.”
of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has also requested the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard to be on standby. Thursday's high tide prediction of 4.35 meters is considered to be a 'moderate height' and only a tide above 4.85 meters is considered high. During the next three days, the high tide levels will increase up to 4.85 meters. Civic officials are concerned over the likelihood of things becoming much worse in case the tides coincide with even partially heavy rains hitting the city. Such a situation will definitely submerge all the low-lying areas of Mumbai, adversely affecting normal life. When contacted, the Director of weather forecast at the Regional Meteorological Centre, V.K. Rajeev said, “Wait for two days for a monsoon update.” When asked about the sea conditions and possible cyclones, he said, “Sea conditions and cyclones do not come under the jurisdiction of the RMD.” The RMD Mumbai website reads, “Condition would become favourable for further advance of south west

Is the state government's attempt to ban dance bars again justified? Varsha Ganesh Entrepreneur No. After the Supreme Court quashed the state's ban, why rake up the issue again?
Punit Bhavsar Working Professional Maybe. While the Supreme Court removed the ban, the state still insists on it. It's a difference of opinion which is difficult to resolve. Amey Jaju Working Professional No. This is like discussing the same topic again and again.
Abhishek Hariharan Working Professional Not Sure. This will again bring up the same old points of arguments and discussions, more PILs, appeals, etc. Suresh Raja Banker Maybe. Maybe the state government still wants to prove its point and make the state dance barfree. Can't say for sure what's on the minds of the politicians.

‘Youth more sensitive towards elderly’ Says the founder of an NGO that works for the welfare of the elderly, on the eve of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day By A Staff Reporter

orld Elder Abuse Awareness Day is around the corner and this day needs to be given due importance because elder abuse is definitely a matter of a concern in today's time and age. According to a study by the World Health Organisation, around four to six per cent of elderly people have experienced some form of abuse or harassment in their homes in our country. And this phenomenon is not typical to only developing countries. Elder abuse which can be physical, psychological, emotional as well as financial and sexual happens in developed countries as well. Though usually unreported, globally studies suggest that the presence of elder abuse ranges from one to ten per
cent in developing as well as developed economies. These figures point out to the fact that there needs to be more sensitisation about how to take care of the elderly, among the youth. Global Success Foundation, a three-year-old non-governmental organisation that helps the elderly to be trained in vocational skills such as computing and helps them in being employed, giving them an opportunity to lead a respectable and dignified life, has planned street plays and flash mobs on June 13 and 14 so that June 15, which has been declared as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by the United Nations, will get people thinking on ways and means to keep their elders happy. “There will be street plays and flash mobs at Thane and Vashi
through which people will be sensitised about the need to love and care for the elderly,” said Sachin Adhikari, founder and social entrepreneur, Global Success Foundation. Adhikari also made an interesting point about the youth being more sensitive to the needs of the elderly. “I have observed that the youth realises that the elderly also need love, care, affection and respect. This might be because they would have seen some old person being ill treated and would have felt it to be wrong. This would have made them sensitive to the issues of the elderly,” said Adhikari. “In fact, the flash mobs and the street plays that we have organised have more than 100 college students participating in them.
The youth is very enthusiastic,” added Adhikari. The NGO also has a helpline number that can be used not only by senior citizens for help, but also their family members to know how they should treat the elderly in the family and handle their issues. Even people interested in volunteering with the NGO to take this cause ahead can use this number. All they have to do is give a missed call on this number and the call centre would revert to them. “It has been more than a month that we started this helpline number and we have already received more than 1,000 calls from senior citizens and people wanting to be volunteers,” said Adhikari. hivaji Park witnessed major flooding on Thursday between 11:15 am and 2:45 pm as a high tide caused the sea levels to rise and enter residential buildings in the vicinity from Dadar Chowpatty. Sea water even entered vehicles parked in the neighbourhood. Residents were forced to wade through knee-deep water as the situation was unexpected and there was no prior warning given by authorities. The water entering several buildings brought along a lot of garbage and waste material which clogged the gutters and rendered roads unusable. “Every year during Sharad Poorn-
ima, we face this problem where the water floods Veer Savarkar Road and enters into streets as well,” said Ganesh Tamhandkar, manager at a local poultry. The two and a half hour long flooding caused traffic to move slower than usual, and many vehicles broke down and had to be pushed out of the water. “Our employees at the poultry readily helped pedestrians and residents. This is the time when mothers usually pick up their children from pre-school. We helped them move about and cross the road as the water level was kneedeep. Our drivers also helped move cars. Two-wheelers passing by faced trouble too. We helped as much as we could,” said Tamhandkar. Niranjan Engineer, a resident of

s far as the storms effect on Mumbai and India is concerned, the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) chief scientist, S N Gajbe, said that Nanauk had moved 830 km south west of the city yesterday at 11:40 am. The system would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the coming 48 hours towards the west coast of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Yesterday's surges saw all the city's coastal roads stretching from Mahim and Dadar upto Worli and even the Gateway of India, flooded with water after the high tide blocked the drainage system. Most roads were littered with plastic and garbage thrown back by the sea, and BMC employees were seen clearing the drainage areas. According to Mahesh Narvekar, Director Information Technology,
BMC, “Over the next three days there are chances of high tides hitting the city. People are requested not to enter into the waters, if at all they do visit the beach side.” He also added, “There will be officials deployed at all the six beaches of the city from today, Girgaum, Shivaji Park, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai for the next five days, since they include weekends and holiday time.” “A team of 15 security guards, one Fire brigade, five NDRF, five Life guards, police officials and one Ambulance will be reporting to the Divisional Fire Officer deployed at each of these beaches from 7 am onwards.” “The officials and guards will be deployed in four-hour shifts to be present before and after the tide and they will be dressed in their uniforms, and equipped with whistles and a bamboo canes to deter people from entering the beaches.”

RTI activist who has sought the info says the remaining 46 per cent ministers will also declare their assets soon

our years ago when Prithviraj Chavan was sworn in as the CM of Maharashtra on Dec 10, 2010, he had asked his ministers to declare their assets, so that people have greater faith in the government. However, this directive seems to have fallen on deaf ears as only 54 per cent of Maharashtra ministers have declared their assets so far. This comes after a series of Right to Information (RTI) applications which were periodically filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali and the latest RTI has revealed that only 24 ministers have given details of their assets to the CM’s office. According to Galgali, “I had sought details of the assets declared by all ministers. Under secretary and public information officer S.G. Kedare informed me that only 24 ministers have declared their assets. Prominent among them are CM Chavan, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Forest minister Dr Pantangrao Kadam, School Education minister Rajendra Darda, Agriculture and Marketing minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Social Justice minister Adv. Shivajirao Moghe,
Rural Development minister Jayant Patil, Health minister Suresh Shetty, Enviorment minister Sanjay Deotale, Water Resources minister Sunil Tatkare, Food & Civil Supply mnister Anil Deshmukh, Food and Drugs Administration minister Manoharrao Naik, Cooperation and Parliamentary Affairs minister Harshvardhan Patil, Higher and Technical Education minister Rajesh Tope, Excise minister Ganesh Naik, Labour minsiter Hassan Mushrif, Women and Child Welfare minister Varsha Gaikwad, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries minister Madhukar Chavan, State School Education Minister Fauzia Khan, State Tribal Development Minister Rajendra Gavit, Sports and Youth Welfare minister Padamakar Valvi, State Finance minister Rajendra Muluk and State Medical Education minister D.P. Sawant.”Interestingly, Galgali said that the CM is head of his ministry and his order should not be denied or delayed by his colleagues. “But ministers like Industries minister Narayan Rane, Home minister R.R. Patil, Revenue minister BalasahebThorat, Minority and Mumbai suburb guardian minister Mohammad
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Arif Naseem Khan, Tribal Development minister Madhukar Pichad never gave response to CM's request. Public Works minister Jaydutt Khisrsagar, Medical Education and Horticulture minister Jitendra Awahd, Employment Guarantee minister Dr. Nitin Raut, Dilip Sopal, Shashikant Shinde, Abdul Sattar, State Home Minister Satej Patil, State Urban Development Minsiter Uday Samant, State Housing minister Sachin Ahir, Suresh Dhas, Ranjeet Kamble, Sanjay Saavkaare, Amit Deshmukh have not responded yet,” Galgali said. He further added, “In 2010, immediately after Chavan ordered his ministers to declare their assets, I filed a similar RTI application seeking details of
Punished for using influence In a move to reduce corruption and the use of influence, DGP Dayal sends officers to far-away rural areas and Naxalite zones By Zuber Ansari

any in the city's police force, who had tried to use the influence of IPS officers, politicians and others for a preferred posting, have been given postings to rural areas and naxal-infested zones. The Director General of Police, Sanjeev Dayal, through this move has set a precedent in order to end the wrath of corruption and influence for police personnel seeking transfers to plum police stations in the city. The DGP has sent such officers to rural areas in the state with some of them receiving postings in the naxal-infested areas like Gadchiroli, Nashik (rural), and across Vidharbha. Dayal had received information about several police officers using their influence and about their 'vested interests' after which he made this move. A Police Sub Inspector (PSI) who was attached with the Kole-Kalyan Kalina Police training camp said, “Many of
DGP Sanjeev Dayal my colleagues were transferred to Gadchiroli and rural areas because they used influences. In their letter to the DGP, they had mentioned their preferred police station and had simultaneously asked an influential person to ring up Dayal.” Another PSI who was earlier attached to Force I said, “I wish to work in Mumbai since we have a lot of of learning opportunities here but I was asked to join in
Nagpur, but a friend of mine was transferred to Gadchiroli because he had asked a politician to ring up Dayal.” However, some PSIs who had made a genuine request for a preferred posting were disappointed with the punishment postings. A PSI who is promoted to the crime branch said, “The officers below the age of 35 were transferred to Naxalite areas or rural areas because young officers are needed there and the ones above the age of 35 were retained in Mumbai. The DGP does not have any personal animosities with any officer.” On the state level, 1,110 officers were reshuffled in which 80 Assistant Police Inspectors were promoted to the PI level. From these, 27 were posted out of Mumbai and around five dozen PI level officers were promoted to the SPI level to be posted in the Crime Branch. DGP Sanjeev Dayal was unavailable for comment.
the assets declared by ministers in the past 15 years as prescribed under the code of conduct. None of the ministers had declared their assets then. After RTI expose, CM immediately instructed all his ministers to declare their assets. In 2011, I filed another RTI to check the status and there I was shocked to know that only 16 out of 40 ministers had declared their assets. Again for the third time, I sought to know the same details and it was revealed that only 22 out of 40 ministers obeyed the CM's order. Now for the fourth time, when I asked the same query, the PIO has replied that 24 out of 42 ministers have submitted their assets' details. I think the series of RTI seeking status of the issue has alerted the Chief Minister's office as well as the ministers as the percentage of the ministers filing their asset details has increased and I am sure this will reach 100 per cent soon. I have also sought to know the details of the assets filed by the minis-
ters and had asked the CM to publish it on the government's website. It was denied to me and other RTI activists too as it was given to the CM's office in
a sealed format. However, Chavan has given directions to put the ministers' names on the website.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he notorious gold polisher gang struck again in Nalasopara on Thursday. This time the victim was a 35-year-old housewife, Sunita Aher, who resides in Nilegaon. Two men posing as salesmen for a company that produces a powder which gives instant shine to gold ornaments, approached Aher’s apartment in Sai Darshan building on Thursday afternoon. The trickster first gave a demonstration by polishing old utensils and claimed that they could even add sparkle to gold and silver ornaments. Convinced by his skills, the unsuspecting woman
handed over gold ornaments worth more than Rs.30,000 to the unidentified trickster for polishing. However, after sending the woman on different errands, the miscreants slipped out of the house with the valuables. A complaint under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against unidentified miscreants at the Nalasopara police station. Police personnel Mali is investigating the case. It may be recalled that a 76year-old woman was robbed of her gold ornaments worth Rs. 1 lakh by a conman using a similar modus operandi earlier. The police are still clueless about these men.

BMC Commissioner will draw up new law to protect urban areas from illegal structures Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced in Assembly that a 14-member committee headed by BMC commissioner has been entrusted with the task of preparing a new comprehensive law to stop illegal structures from proliferating in urban areas. “Ulhasnagar model of regularising illegal structures has not yielded any results and the same yardstick could not be applied to other cities as each one has
different problems and issues. The committee headed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner will comprise commissioners of civic bodies from the state. I have ask for the statistical analysis of illegal structures in Pimpri-Chinchwad by June 30,” Chavan said. Eight persons accused of killing a thief, acquitted
A local court in Thane yesterday acquitted eight persons, accused of killing a thief in 2010, on benefit of doubt. Additional Sessions Judge A.S. Waghwase in the order delivered on Thursday acquitted eight persons saying the prosecution failed to prove charges against the accused beyond doubt. According to the prosecution, two persons who were trying to enter a house of one Mukthyar Shaikh in Shankar Mandir area in January 2010 with intention of robbery, were caught by residents of the locality, who allegedly thrashed them, following which one of the thieves, Kasim Chunimia Shaikh (20) died during treatment at KEM hospital.

This includes Mumbai suburban collector Shekhar Channe who has a car with tinted glasses,” said Senior Police Inspector of Matunga Traffic division Sujata Patil, speaking to the ADC. “The collector’s driver was alone in the vehicle at that time. Family of techie kidnapped in Sudan ready to pay ransom By A Staff Reporter
T
he family members of a 32-yearold techie Irfan Jaffrey, who was kidnapped three months back by gunmen at Darfur in Sudan, on Thursday said they are feeling abandoned in this crisis and are ready to pay ransom demanded by the abductors. "We are ready to pay the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. For me, my husband is everything. The no-ransom policies of the United Nations and Indian government are killing us...My husband is in deep trouble. We are feeling abandoned in this crisis. Why there is no one to help us?" a tearful Nafisa Jaffrey (30), wife of Irfan, told PTI. "I beg External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to feel our pain and anguish and help me get back my
husband," pleaded Nafisa in a choked voice, holding her 7-yearold son's hand. Nafisa stays in Dombivli in neighbouring Thane district. Her husband Irfan, employed as IT engineer by Trigyn Technologies Ltd. since past five years, used to visit home twice in a year. The multinational IT firm provides services of information and communications technology-related work at United Nations missions across the globe, so the UN is involved in negotiations with the abductors. The UN has a policy of not paying ransom. On March 11, a group of five armed gunmen allegedly abducted Irfan from outside a Turkish restaurant. Since then he has been kept hostage in a tribal area of Darfur. Recalling the incident, Irfan's
uncle Shakeel Ahmed said, "We had received a phone call on March 12 afternoon from the IT company stating that Irfan was kidnapped, the news which shattered our entire family." "The company knew that the abductors want money but we were told about the ransom demand only on March 27. We then began arranging money. Now we are ready with the full cash," Ahmed said. "However, we were told that the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is handling the case and their policy is not to pay ransom. I do not understand that why we should suffer because of some institution's policies. The Indian government is also not pressurising the UNAMID to take money and ensure release of its cit-
izen," Ahmed alleged. The Darfur police are very ineffective, he alleged, claiming that, "We spoke to Irfan on a number of occasions over phone. The abductors have called us from the same phone number. Can the police not track the abductors, using the phone network ?" In April, the IT company advised them not to contact Irfan. They were following the advice of a UN team, which claimed hostages were usually released when families lost contact with them, Ahmed said. "But what is the result now ?" he asked. The family is miffed at the Central and UNAMID policies, he said adding that, "I have been in touch with the MEA, the Indian envoy in Sudan and with Trigyn."

Action has also been taken against many police officials for riding their bikes without helmets. More than 15 officials, including BMC workers, have been penalised. In 2012, the Supreme Court had ordered a complete ban on use of tinted plastic films, irrespective of the degree of visibility, throughout the country. The court instructed police officers to issue challans and also remove the black film from the vehicles. Patil added, “Our drive against rule breakers will continue. eople forced to risk their lives by staying in rickety structures or having been evacuated out of such structures in MiraBhayandar, will soon be able to live in flats built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Under the Rental Housing Scheme (RHS), around 3,800 units in nine major projects located in Mira Road and Kashimira are to be made available by private construction companies to MHADA. While a total of 1,900 flats will be handed
over to the MBMC in the coming years, 632 units admeasuring 269 square feet each are ready for possession. Woman hires goons to kill step-brother By Suresh Golani
S
leuths of the Wada police recently arrested a 45year-old woman who hired three local goons to murder her step-brother. The murder is believed to be a fallout of an act of superstition to gain prosperity by the woman identified as Shyamla (45) who lost her husband and son a few years ago.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Ladku Wartha (52), was brutally attacked with swords by three men while he was on his way home in Chikale village with his wife, Ladki (50) and daughter Bharti (25), on May 31. While Ladki and Bharti escaped with minor injuries, Ladku died on the spot. Investigations led to the arrest of Shyamla and her three
accomplices. The police are probing the role of a tantric under whose instructions, Shyamla ordered the killings. “We have arrested the assailants and the woman under section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) and 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and more arrests into the case are likely,” said an investigating officer.

fter an extended wait of over six months, the Road-Over-Bridge (ROB) running over the Versova creek near Kashimira on the Mumbai-Ahmadabad highway was thrown open for motorists on Thursday evening.
Traffic movement has been virtually paralysed since December 21, 2013, after gaping cracks were spotted under a section of the 43-year-old ROB by an on-duty police personnel. A newly-manufactured 48.5 meter-long high-tensile girder section was installed,
following which the entire stretch was concretised and carpeted, officials said. Highlighting the gross inconvenience faced by motorists, NCP legislator Gilbert Mendonca had hinted at launching an agitation if the work was not completed before the monsoons.

Problem of fishing in troubled waters continues T
HE harassment of our fishermen by Sri Lanka and Pakistan continues. Evidently there is a dispute with regard to the limit of territorial waters of India and the other two neighbouring countries. Both claim the waters where they are fishing belong to them. While we do not detain Pakistan or Sri Lanka's fishemen who fish in our waters, our neighbours are eager to seize boats, and put fishermen in jails. Our government does precious little about this: the chief minister of Tamil Nadu keeps asking the Centre to intervene and stop once and for all the persecution of our fishermen. The Gujarat government's efforts in this regard have also failed. On the occasion of the visit of Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lanka President M. Rajapaksa for the swearing-in of Narendra Modi, both the countries released all Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture. Evidently, however, the problem is not over yet. Only a couple of days ago, Sri Lanka arrested a large number of our fishermen for straying into their waters. From this it is clear that apart from taking a decision only once to release our fisherman, no solution has been found to the problem. Sri Lanka's Rajapaksa seems to have forgotten about the issue. It is urgently necessary that a meeting has to take place between us and Sri Lanka and Pakistan authorities. The problem has to be discussed thoroughly and Sri Lanka and Indian authorities must fix a permanent line on the sea up to which our fishermen can go. Now that the former chief minister of Gujarat has become the prime minister and he has established a certain rapport with Pakistan's PM Nawaz Sharif, it should be possible to solve the problem of fishing along the Gujarat coast.

EVER mind what any critic might say: the fact remains the media has done more than full justice to recent developments in the political field for which it deserves the fullest compliments. Practically every aspect of the elections and its effect thereafter have been covered and credit must be given where credit is due. In the television field both Arnab Goswami and Rajdeep Sardesai competed with each other and the sheer energy that CNN-IBN and Times Now expended calls for applause. The print media was even more comprehensive, with brilliant articles and pictorial presentation. If Narendra Modi went overheard in organisational terms, the print media was not too far behind in educating a demanding public. By and large Narendra Modi has received full marks for not only his planning of events but for the thoroughness in which he excelled. One must admire not only Modi and his team but all those who helped him in running the oath-taking ceremony without the slightest hitch. The nature of the cabinet has received applause.
Shift in India’s foreign policy Business Line (May 28) said “the prime ministerial council of ministers is not a bad start for another beginning - governing the country”. Praising the ministerial appointments, the paper said “a political cabinet is not a constraint in getting the best advice and one hopes Modi and his team will seek it whether to revive the economy or restructure the railways”. The appointment of seven women to ministerial posts has been well received with ‘Business Line’ saying this part of the ministry-making exercise has Modi’s stamp on it”. The Economic Times (May 27) said “the pruning of ministries is indeed desirable as also the clubbing of departments that have synergy under one minister”. Only, the paper added: “but for this to translate into maximum governance, effective coordination has to be instituted” to give the economy “new dynamism”. The Hindu (May 28) said, “the Modi stamp on the ministry formation was unmistakable” with the prime minister “making no overt attempt to placate sulking party seniors or demanding regional allies”. The paper said the prime minister “also displayed a readiness to be accommodative with “Sushma Swaraj

The influence of the RSS, said the paper, ‘was evident only in the choice of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, adding “the proposal for the convergence of related ministries as implemented seemed more a practical step than a radical move”. The Times of India (May 26) thought that Modi “has demonstrated a propensity for out-of-box thinking by inviting SAARC heads of state to his swearing-in ceremony. The paper said Modi “has moved away from the belligerent rhetoric of his election campaign.. calming nerves in the region by sending out the signal that he will be more statesman-like as prime minister”. The paper said, “if India aspires to take off economically, then settling relations with its neighbours, including China, will be an enormous asset - and the same applies to other South Asian neighbours”. The New Indian Express (May 28) said Modi’s diplomatic initiative in inviting SAARC leaders signifies a shift in India’s foreign policy which has an ‘Asia Pivot’ a change from India’s traditional West-centric approach. Modi, it said, “also wants to fashion economic diplomacy as a major tool” which “makes sense both from a strategic and business perspective”. The next ten yeas and more should aim at significantly increasing foreign direct investment from Japan and other emerging economies said the paper, adding: “it will only enhance the country’s international image as a regional super power seeking to genuinely engage with its neighbours”. Or as Thomas Edison about inventing the light bulb said: “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” The important thing is not giving up, but learning and then improving by using this feedback to get better and ultimately succeed. A quote expressing the same principle is “A man who has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it, is committing another mistake.” “He who learns but does not think, is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.” Confucius explains the connection of learning and reflection. Reflection of that what we learned by thinking or of the results we get by applying the knowledge. “Study without reflection is a waste of time; reflection without study is dangerous” is a similar quote by Confucius. Learning is only useful if we connect the learning within our own

I think everybody experienced learning when we really want this knowledge and interweave it with what we already know. has”struck the right notes in talking about “a strong developed and inclusive India”. By keeping the ministry small, Modi has indicated he means business and in inducting as many as seven women, he has sent out a strong message that he is for “women’s empowerment” said the paper. Keeping aged leaders out as well as children of party leaders” continued the paper, “is admirable”.
Modi pulled off a diplomatic coup The Hindustan Times (May 27) thought that Modi has “pulled off a diplomatic coup of sorts in inviting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif”. While nothing much may come out of it, the paper said “it does set a good precedent for India-Pakistan relations”. The paper praised the inclusion of seven women in Modi’s cabinet, saying: “it will not go unnoticed”. The fact that Mr. Modi has put his own stamp on the Cabinet under his regime is inescapable, it added. Concluding, the paper said that “as he steps into India’s most crucial office Mr. Modi is off to a good start that few before him have got” and “given his track record” we have little to suggest that he will not hit the ground running”. The Asian Age (May 27) felt that Mr. Modi’s team does not look all that lean and mean and that there could be no better person to handle finance ministry than Arun Jaitley, considering “the economic mess that Modi’s government has inherited”. However it said “the underlying strength of the new government is prime minister Narendra Modi who will be in the driver’s seat”. One hopes, the paper added “this will be new wine in new bottle”. DNA (May 27) went off on an entirely different track. It thought that it is not right to mourn the passing away of the socialist Nehruvian era” and “it would be quite off the mark to do so”. Nehru, said the paper, “would have rejoiced the changes that have taken place due to economic liberalisation and reforms in India since the 1980s and 1990s and argued that “it was the industrial and educational foundation in the Nehruvian India of the 1950s and 1960s that served as the lift off stage for today’s India. Steven Covey calls it “Sharpening the saw.” “If you look into your own heart, and you find nothing wrong there, what is there to worry about? What is there to fear?” It shows that our primary work lies within ourselves: to work on ourselves and improve will automatically take care of the outside world if we use our abilities then. “When we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.” The solution to problems is not “out there”. It is the Inside-Out approach: success and happiness can only be found by working on ourselves. It also entails the spiritual message to look inside and to discover ourselves fully. High Courts enjoy amounts to approximately four months (including Sundays). In addition there may be a shortage of courts or judges, and vacancies not filled in time. So it is my earnest appeal to the Modi government to bring about significant changes with a time bound approach to alleviate the grudges of people against the Judiciary system.

Instead, the aim should be to ask the existing engineering colleges to raise themselves to the level of the IITs academically by offering more freedom to the students and the professors. As an IITian myself, I can say with confidence that this is definitely possible.

APROPOS the news report that the former Army chief V.K. Singh has been slamming the next Army Chief on Twitter. Singh's slanderous comments against the Army Chief designate, Lt. Gen. Dalbir Singh, is quite unfortunate. V.K. Singh who had earlier held the highest post in the Indian Army, and who is now a Central minister to boot, should have known better than to vilify the next Army Chief and his entire unit of dedicated soldiers as criminals and dacoits. For this grave impropriety, it is imperative that V.K. Singh is tried on charges of treason/ sedition. PM Modi needs to immediately sack V.K. Singh from the ministry to uphold the mantra of 'good governance'.

AT LONG LAST: The eight-year wait for the Mumbai Metro has come to an end, and the project has been opened to public use. One must understand that the world class facilities provided by the Metro cannot come at the cost of a cycle. MMOPL's fare demands are justified. THE Metro has finally seen the light of day. Hats off to Anil Ambani for making that happen through his company Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL). The delay and cost inflation is not entirely MMOPL's fault as we are aware if our laws to acquire land for such projects. The current controversy over the metro fare involving the State CM is unwarranted. While Prithviraj Chavan has an eye on the assembly polls, it is common knowledge that MMOPL would not even be able to breakeven with an introductory fare of just Rs.10. Top facilities have its maintenance and
running cost apart from making profits for upgradation. Rs.30 from Versova to Ghatkopar or the Rs.40 demanded by MMOPL is reasonable for such world class transport. Low fares will only reduce safety as money is needed to ensure safety standards. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
MUMBAI'S first Metro rail is here after an eight-year wait and the proposed second and third lines will take another eight years according to reports. The present route cover of 11.4 km touching Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar cov-
ers the distance in 23 minutes, and from Ghatkopar to Andheri in 13 minutes. It is hoped that Metro service will ease out traffic snarls in this route. A promotional price of Rs.10 is fixed for the next 30 days and by that time, the rates should be finalised by the political wing according to their whims and fancies. Initially the frequency will be four minutes in peak hours and eight minutes during non-peak hours. It is worth waiting as the Metro covers focal points unlike the Monorail. Only itch of fixing rates will be solved soon. Overall, it was worth the wait. — Maniam Ramani, Kharghar

What prompted Dr. Dabholkar? THE reaction of Sharad Pawar to the murder of a techie in Pune is indeed very strange. he state government in February this year set up a task force headed by state Chief Secretary for the safety and protection of street children in Mumbai, stated Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Fouzia Khan in the legislative council. She said this while replying to supplementary queries on a starred question raised by Dr. Deepak Sawant (Shiv Sena) and others during the question hour. She said that the task force was set up after the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) submitted its report to the government. The task force has been entrusted with the task of formulating policy for street children and has been asked to fast-track its deliberations. Khan said that at present, commissioner for child labour and police commissioner enforcement are taking action against children found begging or engaged in child
labour. Raising a supplementary query, Dr. Deepak Sawant stated that TISS in association with NGO Action Aid had conducted a survey in 24 BMC wards and found out 36,154 street children. He said that according to the TISS report, 50 per cent of the street children stay on the road. Most of them are aged between 10 and 18 years. He further disclosed that 18 percent of them are found to be sick, 2.5 per cent of them are handicapped and 15 per cent of them are drug addicts.

plying to further supplementary queries, the minister informed the house that there are 12,789 schools in the state which have 20 or less than 20 students on their roll calls and 1,019 schools which have five or less than five students on their roll calls. There are 54 schools in the state which have just one student on their rolls and there are 134 schools in the state which have just two students on their roll calls. Earlier, Minister for School Education Fouzia Khan clarified that no school which has less students on their roll call has been shut down. Making an intervention, Darda added that the government was duty bound to provide education even to a single student. He added that the government will have to decide upon transferring these students to nearby schools. Darda further stated that in case the nearest school is more than two kilometers away, then the government considers providing transportation grant for such school children. Sushil Kadam | ADC

Since the completion of their terms, the MU has not appointed replacements. Senate member Pradeep Sawant said, “We have discussed the vacancies with the Vice-Chancellor several times, but there has been no action from the MU's side. The MLAs and corporators play an important role in the senate as they are the members who can raise issues in the assembly as well as liaise with the government for modifications and changes required for the students.” It was only last week that the MU appointed a new senate member and a management council member, after an eight-month wait. The appointments were due as senate and management council member Dilip Karande had passed away and his seat needed to be filled. The ADC spoke to Dr. M.A. Khan, Registrar of MU, who simply said, “The MU will soon be stepping ahead with the appointments. It will be done as soon as possible!”

According to the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, the senate of a university must consist of two MLAs and two corporators (from the city and nagar parishad). These members are required to actively work with the senate members to solve problems and contribute to and academic modifications changes in the university. The term for these members is one year and they are to be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. When the new senate was formed in 2010, the MU appointed Dr. Jitendar Awadh (NCP) and Pravin Darekar (MVS) as the senate MLAs. Arati Gauri from Thane and another corporator were appointed to fill the places of the senate corporators.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2014
W
orld Cup fans will understand when we say that this weekend is the start of a really exciting season. Having waited four years to watch countries play on such a large platform, the frenzy is understandable. With several big name players playing their last World Cup and surprising young stars waiting to carve their place in football history, here’s a quick guide to some exciting players and matches and where to get some great World Cup merchandise to get in the spirit of the game.
matches to watch out for It is possible that not all of us will be able to set our schedules around the World Cup dates and match timings. So, to make sure that you don’t miss the best of what the beautiful game (as the Brazilians call it) has to offer, mark your calendars for these exciting group stage matches, that you shouldn’t miss out on watching. The matches will be telecast on Sony Six.
spain vs Netherlands
Are you having flashbacks from the 2010 World Cup final? So are we! You can’t miss watching the ageing Spain squad trying to prove that they still have what it takes to win the tournament. Those who watched the last World Cup final, will remember this match being hotly contested, with tempers flying, both on and off the pitch. Having won the 2008 Euro Cup, the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Euro Cup, Spain is on a roll and will do everything it can to win this year as well. when June 14, 12.30am
england vs Italy
Group D includes teams (England, Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica) have an impressive seven World Cups between them — making all the matches in this group worth watching. But, the clash between the English and the Italians promises to be a thrilling one, with the traditionally defensive Italians trying to thwart England’s hunt for World Cup glory — something that the Three Lions have been chasing for a long, long time. when June 15, 3.30am
Portugal vs Germany
Both countries are World Cup contenders and both, along with USA and Ghana, find a spot in the group of death. This match is one of the most anticipated ones in the group stages, partly because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent form, which has the ability to singlehandedly take Portugal to the finals. At the same time, Germany have been playing some really good international football, making them one of the favourites at this year’s World Cup. This is a game you just can’t miss! when June 16, 9.30pm
Brazil vs mexico
The match between these two south-American nations is like the local derby of a national football league. Mexico and Brazil have always had tough matches with the results going Mexico’s way more often than you’d expect. Brazil’s coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, himself acknowledged that Mexcio has always been a tough opponent for his team. when June 18, 12.30am
usa’s games against Portugal and Germany
USA’s matches against both Portugal and Germany are a must-watch, not because the games promise fireworks, but due to the fact that the result of these games will determine which teams advance to the next round. So, you can expect the players from each team to give everything that they have to ensure that they win the game. when June 23, 3.30am (vs Portugal) and June 26, 9.30pm (vs Germany)
watch these stars Rising stars are the USP of any World Cup and this one is no different. We’ve picked six stars that we can’t wait to see in action:
raphael Varane: france
The Real Madrid centre-back is poised to become one of the younger stars of the tournament this year. With all of France waiting to see him shine, there’s a lot of pressure on the 21-year-old, but we’re hoping that the defender will add a little spunk to the French side.
James rodriguez: colombia
Whether you’re rooting for Colombia or not, you should be watching this 22-year-old star. Poised to become a pretty big name in football, he currently plays as right wing for AS Monaco, but we’re looking forward to seeing a few good games from him this World Cup.
ross Barkley: england
Will England ever get to shine at FIFA again? The debate is loud and varied, so let’s not get into that. One thing is for sure though — we’re expecting some great work from this 20-year-old Everton star. We’re hoping that the midfielder helps push England higher up the scale this tournament.
miralem Pjanic: Bosnia and herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a team to watch anyway, as this is their first major tournament since they have become an independent nation. And, young Roma star, Miralem Pjanic, is finally seeing his moment in the sun with the team. Watch the 24-year-old midfielder kick up a storm this tournament.
william carvalho: Portugal
All eyes may be on superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, but don’t skip over the rest of the team without paying attention to midfielder William Carvalho. He may be only 22-years-old, but he’s already shone on the field in his defensive midfielder position and the buzz around him is pretty strong this year. Look forward to major clubs fighting over him if he proves his mettle at the World Cup!
Paul Pogba: france
The French side is serving up some surprises when it comes to their younger players. The 21-year-old Juventus player has already scored some impressive goals and helped win accolades for the club. The French would be a team to reckon with if he performs well.

With a vast difference between India and Brazil’s time zones, it will be difficult to figure out what match will be shown at what time. The fact that Brazil itself has three different time-zones makes it even more difficult. However, you can check out the World Time Zone website, where they have put up an interactive world map. Click on the match that you’d like to watch and it will display the time that the match will start in each country. You can access the map by going to this link: www.worldtimezone.com/time/fifa-time-map2014.php
Know your mascot
The official mascot this year is Fuleco the Armadillo. The cute, three-banded animal is native to Brazil and was chosen since it is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list, as a vulnerable animal. His message this year features environmental concerns.

Fan speak
Even if you can’t make it to the stadiums this year and are watching the matches from the confines of your home, you don’t have to miss out on exploring the venues. As always, Google comes to the rescue with Google Maps’ virtual tours of all the stadiums that will be holding the matches. You will only be able to see the pitch and the stands, but that’s better than nothing, right?! So, log on to www.google.com/maps/view s/streetview/brazils-worldcup-stadiums?gl=us
“For the World Cup this year, I’m really looking forward to some football action after the leagues are over. The music and flair of the tournament is always awesome, from the theme songs to the songs that each channel has for their broadcasts (I think the BBC got Stevie Wonder to do a song for their broadcasts during the World Cup). From a purely football aspect, I’m looking forward to seeing some new players perform and seeing how the clubs will splash big money to buy them in an interesting transfer season afterwards!” — Ankit Arora (24), Versova “With most of the matches going to be telecasted late at night, this World Cup will mean I’ll be going to work extremely sleepy on most days, but it’ll be worth it. The games I am most looking forward to are the ones between Germany and Portugal and England and Uruguay in the group stages. I am not supporting any team as such, but I have a soft spot for Germany.” — Sameer Bharde (22), Santacruz

of Fine Arts degree from the State University New York in Animation & Design, and a diploma from the Hallmark Institute of Photography, Salamat got his first opportunity to work and participate in the New York Fashion Week, with designers such as Nico & Adrian, followed by a chance to work at the Brooklyn Fashion Week. With his heart here in India, his return to the country gave him the opportunity to profile Bollywood composers such as Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy, Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher and actors such as Bipasha Basu, Farhan Akhtar, Salman Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Vir Das. alamat Hussain comes from a family that is well acquainted with art. The artist, who is M.F. Hussain’s grandson, says that his first memory of a photograph is that of him into his parents’ arms. “This image then grew to a collection of snapshots of cities, school days, holidays and further education,” he says. His exhibition, titled 25 Kilos, is a montage of snapshots from several cities, including Mumbai, Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Turkey. The exhibition promises to make you see the sights and sounds of cities such as Turkey, through the vision and thoughts of the artist. The name 25 Kilos, is actually the weight of the equipment that Salamat carried on his travels. “These images are from my travels to Turkey, where I had more equipment than clothes or shoes! Turkey is a harmonious blend of traditional and modern cultures and my impression of the country as a photographer is a mix of this heady, cultural tonic that makes me crave exploring it deeper. There was always something intriguing to shoot, from busy, bustling streets, to the quiet, unpaved lanes,” he says, when we asked him about his experiences while shooting in Turkey. Salamat’s main area of interest is travel photography. Ask him what his grandfather, M.F. Hussain, had to say about his artistic leaning and he quips, “He was a mentor. He’d always tell me to have my camera ready, as you never know when an opportunity is going to strike. He told me to do what I like doing and not bother about critical opinion.” A Mumbai-bred Indian with a Bachelor

Summer centric Runah Salon is offering an ice-cream manicure and pedicure to help you close out the sweltering summer in style. Shirley Mistry tells you about her experience
I
f you think that putting the words icecream and pedicure together means that you’ll be surrounded by, soaking your feet in, or at least eating ice-cream, you’re going to be sorely disappointed at Runah Salon. But, before I reached this conclusion, I was quite intrigued to see what this famed icecream pedicure included. Given the scorching heat, it seemed like the perfect summer indulgence. However, mi nutes into my treatment, I realised that there wasn't going to be any icecream at all! The spa uses products by an American brand called Me! Bath for the treatment and these have enterprising names such as A Scoop of Ice Cream instead of just foot soak, Body Icing instead of moisturiser, Sherbet instead of body scrub... you get where we are going with this, don't you? The treatment started with a foot w ash, followed by a soak, both of which used products that contained almond, milk and honey. The products smell divine and will instantly relax you. After this, the sherbet came into play and it made for a really good

scrub. Just the right amount of abrasion ensured that my skin was well exfoliated, without getting scratched and sore. After the thorough scrub, came the chocolate-scented mask. The scent was si milar to that of dark chocolate and by this point, you are somewhat disappointed that the treatment doesn’t include a few scoops of ice cream to devour while you waited for the mask to dry. Once it has worked its magic for 10 minutes, it is washed off and followed up with a moisturiser and a short massage —the perfect way to end a pampering session. My therapist told me that this pedicure nourishes your skin d eeper than others do, and will last a good two weeks. Although the pedicure did get rid of a nasty, uneven tan (to a certain extent) and made my feet super soft, it didn't last the promised two weeks. The effects wore off in three to four days, which is even quicker than a regular pedicure. Although this treatment is slightly gimmicky, it is worth trying if you are looking for something different. However, pri ced at `1,200 for a manicure and `1,500 for a pedicure that lasts roughly 75 minutes, it isn't the cheapest option. urquoise & Gold's new store in Bandra is tiny and the fact that almost half of the store is devoted to changing rooms makes it seem even smaller. This can be both good and bad, since at first glance, it seems like they don’t have enough variety. But, the beautifully designed store more than makes up for this and you can tell that shopping here will be a breeze. Two racks flank the cramped walls as you enter and the accessories are well-placed behind the reception, which doubles up as a billing counter. I was drawn immediately to their current summer clothing range, that features pretty prints in fun colours. Predominately beachwear, the collection features monokinis, bikinis, swimsuits and coverups. They also have a few full-length dresses that are perfect for a casual evening out. Apparel at the store is swathed in cool shades of blue and green, with subtle tones of yellow and red peeking through. White leads their colour palette, since it acts as the base colour for most of their merchandise. A variety in prints however, is, unfortunately, missing from their designs. I saw nothing but a few animal prints, some geometric designs and an overdose of floral. That said, the designs that do make an appearance are good enough to pick up almost immediately. Their accessories and jewellery however, were a huge disappointment. The earrings and necklaces were uninspired and the subdued, dull gold coating on most of the jewellery didn’t add anything to the designs or complement the apparel that they have in stock at the moment. The hats were their only saving grace, but even those seemed quite limited.
The store's blue-white décor deserves a special mention. The all-white paint scheme coupled with the green-blue chandeliers and curtains make Turquoise & Gold a very attractive store — one that will entice you to step in while you're walking by on Turner Road. However, once you step in, you might not be very impressed by their collection. So, is the store worth a visit? Certainly, because it won't take you more than a few minutes to breeze through their collection. The prices at the store start from `3,500 and go up to `22,500. BurMeSe touCH Yamini Walia visited Burma Burma, a newly opened Burmese restaurant in Fort and tells you whether the place lives up to expectations
I
can’t claim to be a connoisseur when it comes to anything Burmese, food included. But, when the opportunity arose to try something new, I was bubbling with excitement. So, with pretty high expectations, I walked into Burma Burma, a restaurant that promises authentic Burmese delicacies The restaurant is so small that it can accommodate only up to 60 diners, which explains why it was so crowded on a Tuesday evening. So much so, that despite making a reservation well in advance, I had to sit next to the bar through the evening. Nevertheless, I was still looking forward to their food. I was extremely impressed by the interiors, which were quite arty, with brightly coloured umbrellas spread across the ceiling. It’s important to note that Burma Burma is all-vegetarian, and since Burmese dishes include interesting fish and meat options, don’t go there expecting fish-based broths or goat-based curries. Regardless, I put aside any form of judgement, starting my experience with the Burmese Blossom (`170), a drink made with watermelon and rose. Rich in flavour, it was quite refreshing. After this, we ordered Pyaan boo Palata (`270) which turned out to be the best dish of the evening. The gravy consisted of corn, onions and coconut milk, served with a paratha. It was light and absolutely delicious. My dining companion and I would visit again purely for this dish. Next, we ordered the mushroom paukse
(`270) — steamed buns filled with mushroom. Soft and light, the buns were melt-in-themouth. However, I would have appreciated a little more of the mushroom flavour, since the buns alone would have tasted exactly the same. We had heard a lot about their salads (Burmese salads include a variety of interesting options), so I thought of giving their Mandalay laphet thoke (`280), which is a green tea leaf salad, a try. Green tea leaf is not an obvious choice when it comes to salads. However, this one didn’t fail to impress. The salad contained fried lentils and roasted peanuts, mixed with alfalfa sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and red cabbage, but with a delightful flavour imparted from the puréed green tea. You can’t visit a Burmese restaurant and miss out on Oh No Khao Suey (`290), so I tried that before the meal was done. The dish consisted of a bowl of coconut milk gravy, mixed with noodles and a platter of condiments such as fried garlic, cilantro, lemon slices, peanuts and chilli oil, all of which blended perfectly with each other. We finally moved on to a traditional Burmese dessert, Tagu Pyian (`200), even though we were extremely full! The dessert was served in a bowl, with a mixture of sago, palm jaggery, and coconut cream bake. If you like desserts that are not too sweet and are extremely light, this one is for you.
>> Although Burma Burma lacks seating space, the food here, left us impressed
WhaT’s cooking Hokey Pokey at Churchgate! Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Burma Burma because of the food. However, I wish they had arranged proper seating for us, especially since we had a reservation.

Safety firSt!
If you are a woman, backpacking through India might not be on your bucket list. However, a survey conducted by MakeMyTrip reveals that 49% of women feel safe when the travel within the country. So, get ready to plan your next trip as Yamini Walia tells you more
T
ravelling alone is always risky and if you’re a woman, the risk becomes greater. These days, all we’ve been hearing about is how unsafe the country has become for women, along with several reports of a fall in foreign inbound travel due to people’s concerns about the safety of women in India. However, despite these facts, women in the country appear fairly confident about travelling alone. A recent survey, conducted by the online travel portal, MakeMyTrip, proved that women should be giving it a go!
>> Palolem beach in South Goa is a beautiful beach filled with several adventure activities for tourists
The surprising sTaTisTics Mohit Gupta, chief business officer of holidays at MakeMyTrip, tells us, “In the past few years, we have seen queries and bookings from women travellers increase significantly. Women travellers have grown confident and are savvy when it comes to going on trips alone or in groups. There are a variety of factors for this — increasing incomes, paucity of time to coordinate holidays with all family members and a growing number of financially secure women in the 40-70-year-old age group.” According to the survey, 49% of women feel safe while travelling in India. An overwhelming 63% ticked the ‘It depends on the destination and not the country’ option. On the other hand, 21% showcased a preference for travelling overseas, citing safety concerns. The survey also revealed a break from tradition, with solotravel picking up in India. An encouraging rate of 44% of women leisure-travellers in India have travelled alone, citing reasons of comfort and cultural alignment. From the lot, 70% have travelled only within India, while just 10% have travelled solo overseas; 20%, on the other hand, have covered both. Another interesting fact that emerged is that 44% of women prefer travelling to the hills, whereas 36% like beaches and 20% prefer adventure travel. In an earlier survey, that was undertaken in 2012, Spain featured high on the list, due to the release of the film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. This year, mainland Europe is back in the reckoning. Indian companies mopped up Rs 450 crore via retail issuance of nonconvertible debentures in the first two months of the current fiscal, primarily to meet working capital requirements. A cumulative amount of Rs 42,383 crore had been garnered through 35 issues of NCDs in the entire 2013-14. Non-convertible debentures are loan-linked bonds that cannot be converted into stock, and usually offer higher interest rates than convertible debentures. Most of the funds were raised to support working capital requirements and for other general corporate purposes.

E
nthused by robust response to the Offer-for-sale (OFS) mechanism of selling shares by companies, market regulator Sebi plans to provide discount for retail investors in such share sales and allow a larger set of firms to tap this route. Besides, Sebi is considering at least 10% of the shares to be sold through the OFS mechanism to be revered for retail investors, while non-promoters may also be permitted to tap the route, officials said. The OFS route was introduced in February 2012 as a fast-track mode for sale of shares by promoters. Since
then more than 100 companies have sold shares through this mechanism to mop-up close to Rs 50,000 crore. As OFS has found to be very successful mechanism for share sale, Sebi has now decided to widen its ambit and the proposed changes likely to be discussed in the regulator's board meeting next week. The Sebi board will consider a proposal where a minimum of 10% of the issue size would be revered for retail investors (those investors bidding for less than Rs 2 lakh). In case, this percentage is not fully utilised, the unutilised portion may be offered to other investors. Besides, seller of shares may offer a
discount to retail investors. As per the proposal, non-promoters of listed firms will be allowed to sell their stake through OFS, which involves an auction of shares on stock exchanges during market hours. Also, Sebi plans to to make OFS route available to the top 200 listed firms by market capitalisation. Currently, top 100 listed companies by valuation are allowed to tap the route. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had introduced OFS mechanism to help listed private companies to comply with the minimum 25% public shareholding norm and state-owned firms meet the requirement of 10% public-float.

nfosys yesterday named former SAP executive board member Vishal Sikka as its new chief executive officer, the first time the nation’s second-largest software services exporter will have a non-founder as CEO. Sikka, 47, will replace S D Shibulal, one of the seven engineers who founded Infosys in 1981, from August 1, Infosys said in a statement. Also, the firm’s Executive Chairman N R Narayana Murthy and Executive Vice Chairman S Gopalakrishnan will step down on June 14. Murthy will be designated as chairman emeritus from October 11. Sikka, who will also be the company’s MD, quit SAP in May. He comes in at a time when Infosys has had four straight years of narrowing margins. Besides, almost a dozen senior executives have left since last year when co-founder Murthy returned as chairman. Murthy brought his son Rohan as his executive assistant. Infosys said the chairman’s office would be dissolved and Rohan would leave the company on Saturday, when the company will hold its annual shareholders meeting in Bangalore.
produced gas at according to a formula suggested by a panel headed by C Rangarajan. This formula was to come into effect from April 1 but announcement of the new rate was deferred because of general elections. "Rangarajan formula is too complex. It has variables that were questioned by stakeholders during the entire approval process in the previous government. This formula either needs to be simplified or replaced by a less complex one," an official privy to the thinking in the new government said. A new panel may be asked to look into the issue, he said adding if that happens a new price may be delayed beyond July 1, the date oil ministry has given to Reliance Industries for implementation of new rate. The Rangarajan pricing formula is based on the average of the prices of imported LNG into India and the weighted average of gas prices in North America, Europe and Japan in 12 months. The price of gas, according to this formula, comes to around USD 8.3 per million British thermal unit for April-June quarter, almost double the current price of USD 4.2. However, if only LNG bought on long-term contract is kept and the purchases from volatile spot market are eliminated, as was demanded by some user ministries in the run up to the Cabinet approval, the new rate would come to USD 7.8, the official said. The steep price hike of USD 8.3 had become controversial with CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta and an NGO filing a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that the move was for the benefit of Reliance Industries. "There is also a view in the government that we should allow the Supreme Court to deliver its verdict on the issue. Once the highest court decides on it either ways, the issue would get resolved," he said. The official said the formula was to apply for all domestic gas - whether produced from deep sea, shallow water or on land. "Some argue that there is
a case for differential pricing as the cost of exploration and production on land like for instance for coalbed methane (CBM) is far less than deep sea exploration and so there can be different rates." According to the formula approved, rates are to change every quarter based on average price in previous 12 months with a lag of one quarter. While USD 8.3 is the estimate of gas price for April-June quarter based on averages in the January-December period, the price in subsequent quarters would be higher considering India's longterm LNG import contract has seen an increase from 2014. Gas price could rise to USD 9.1 per mmBtu next fiscal and to USD 9.6 by FY'17 assuming current pricing levels of crude, US Henry Hub, UK National Balancing Point and Japan LNG imports, he said.
CIL Proposes Changes In Model Document For Mine Developers By A Business Reporter
S
tate-owned Coal India Ltd has proposed significant changes in model document for engaging Mine Developers and Operators. The model concession agreement for MDOs in CIL is being finalised by the government. The changes proposed by CIL include deletion of the provision for assigning of agreement in certain circumstances through a substitution agreement, an official document said. The differentiation between allocation of costs on account of force majeure, 'prior to' or 'after' the appointed date, has been removed, it said. "Major changes in the termination payment have been made which do not bring any obligation to take care of debt due etc," the document added. In the Budget 2013-14 an announcement was made for public private participation (PPP) with Coal India for
augmenting coal production in the country. A Committee was set up under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Coal, in March last year with representatives from Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance (DEA), Ministry of Labour and Employment and Ministry of Law and Justice. A number of meetings were held and the committee deliberated on various models, including engaging of MDOs. The demand and supply gap of coal increased by 17.9 per cent to 171 million tonnes (MT) in the last fiscal. The import of dry fuel rose at a time when CIL, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic production, missed its output target in the last financial year. CIL produced 462 MT in the financial year ended March 31, 2014, against a target of 482 MT. In 201213, CIL produced 452.5 MT coal, short of the goal of 464 MT.
Rashtriya Ispat IPO By October By A Business Reporter
T
he initial public offering (IPO) of state-owned steel maker Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) may take place by October, with the government likely to sell a 10 per cent stake in the company. "The IPO is likely to hit by September-October this year. The Department of Disinvestment will kick-start the process of listing in next two weeks," a Steel Ministry official said. RINL, which produces 2.9 million tonnes of steel annually, is on the verge of completing a Rs 12,300 crore expansion programme, which will increase its capacity to 6.3 million tonnes a year. There are plans to raise it further to 20 million tonnes a year by 2025-26. The RINL share sale had to be deferred thrice in the past two
years due to differences over pricing among merchant bankers and an accident at its sole facility at Vizag in which 19 people were killed. The listing of RINL is also necessary to maintain its Navratna status, which gives the company some operational and functional autonomy. The Navratna status was granted on November 16, 2010, on condition that it would get listed on the stock markets within two years, a deadline that has since been extended. RINL had a net worth of Rs 12,477 crore and an equity of Rs 6,347 crore in 2012-13. It clocked an 8 per cent growth in sales to Rs 13,527 crore in 2013-14. Sources said the DoD would soon float a tender inviting expressions of interest from merchant bankers to manage the issue.

he affable Aamir Khan was in one of his candid confession moods. Accompanied by wife Kiran Rao, Khan was attending the live-telecast international premiere screening of the ‘Lagaan-centric’ docufeature ‘Chale Chalo’ hosted by Zee TV backed Channel '& Pictures'. Es the docu-movie (directed by Satyajit Bhatkal) unfolded on screen at the Yashraj Studios,
www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2014
Aamir recalled a series of startling nostalgic anecdotes during the location shoot of the Ashutosh Gowarikerdirected period (Oscar nominated) landmark movie. ‘Lagaan’ ( 2001) was Aamir's first encounter with Kiran Rao, then an assistant director, in the crew of ‘Lagaan’. “When I needed a chunky, metallic pair of earrings for my rustic ‘Bhuvan’ character, I had liked what Kiran had worn and borrowed them from her to use it in the movie,” smiled Aamir impishly. Wasn’t it unfair that the media hype declared ‘Chale Chalo’ as Aamir’s
“first unreleased movie” when actually it was released in a few theatres many years ago? Clarifies Aamir, “That’s true, it was released, but hardly anyone has watched it. Somehow, Indians generally hate watching documentaries. Out here, we needed to build up this curiosity-teaser hype to get the home-viewers to not only watch our docu-feature ‘Chale Chalo’ which has a gripping story in itself, but also have hi-tech collective ‘live’ telly interactions with me. It’s a major step towards cinema-consciousness. For that matter, as a
cinema-buff, I would be very keen to watch ‘the making of ‘Mughal-e-Aazam’ which took over ten years to make, in the absence of hi-tech communications,” insists Aamir, who has been shooting for his next movie with an intriguing title 'PK' directed by Raju Hirani (of ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Munnabhai’ fame). Being a perfectionist, Aamir is known to have backed out from some movies (like 'Darr’) which later emerged as superhits. “Even though such movies may have turned out to be a huge success, I don’t regret not doing any films offered to me.”
Live for today, says Mithunda Mithun Chakraborty, who celebrates his 64th birthday on June 16, never had the looks and charisma of Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh. But his abundant talent helped him to change things in his favour. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur interviewed the veteran star recently. Excerpts:
How do you feel when you look back at your career? I feel proud that I have achieved name and fame though I never did a film for any big banner like Yash Chopra or Subhash Ghai. Whatever I have done has been on my own steam and merit. And even today, I am as busy as ever. You have made a comeback of sorts in Bollywood ? Comeback? When did I ever retire from films? Never! I may not have been very active in Bollywood but then I had always kept myself busy by acting in films on my own terms and conditions. I have been acting in Bengali films too.
You left Bollywood and went to Ooty at the peak of your career? I went to Ooty because I had got drained, running from one studio to another, doing one film after another. Things began to get repetitive. I needed peace of mind
and relaxation. In Ooty, I have a fivestar hotel called 'The Monarch' and my International Hotel Business School, which I manage.
It is the season of remakes. Do you have objections to 'Shaukeen' (1982) being remade and Akshay Kumar reprising your role? Let them do it. You become megastars when superstars start reprising your roles. But personally speaking, I’m against remakes. I never wanted 'Agneepath' to be remade nor do I want to see a 'Disco Dancer' (1982) remake. It dilutes the charisma of the original one.
me fussy or meticulous but that’s the way I am.
What keeps you going? My positive attitude and focus. I don't carry any hang-ups. If a film flops, it flops, move on. I don't live for tomorrow. Today is the day for me.
Vijendra’s the champ in ‘Fugly’

ery few are aware that megastar Amitabh Bachchan had nurtured a dream of becoming a radio presenter before trying his luck in Bollywood and even visited the Mumbai studio of All India Radio for auditions. The versatile radio announcer, Ameen Sayani, who is back on Radio with his new show 'Sitaron ki Jawaniyaan', has revealed that he did not have time to meet him as the
actor had not taken an appointment for a voice audition. “It was somewhere in late 60s when I used to do 20 shows a week, spending most of the day locked up in the sound studio as I was involved in every process of radio programming. One day, a young man named Amitabh Bachchan walked in without appointment for a voice audition. “I had not a second to spare for this thin man. He waited and left and came
back a few more times. But I could not see him and kept telling him through my receptionist to take an appointment and come,” Sayani told PTI in an interview. When Sayani (81) watched 'Anand' (1971), where Bachchan starred opposite Rajesh Khanna at a trial show, he was bowled over by the persona and voice of Big B without knowing he was the same person who had come for the audition. The two later laughed about it.
Vijender Singh, an Olympic medalist in Boxing, is making his big screen debut in Kabir Sadanand’s ‘Fugly.’ We got talking to the tough guy about his big screen debut By Sandeep Hattangadi
Were you comfortable acting? I am still nervous about the outcome and I was nervous while shooting for the film though I am an international boxer. Director Kabir Sadanand helped me a lot.
To whom do you owe your film career? To Akshay Kumar who cajoled me into an acting career. Initially, I was apprehensive about it.
How was it like working on the film? It was great fun and I made a lot of friends like Arfi Lamba, Mohit, Kiera Advani, Jimmy Sheirgill, and Salman Khan who makes a special appearance in the film. Was it easy for you to act?
Both acting and boxing demand a lot of discipline and I had to surrender myself to the director and his demands for the perfect take. However, it was good for the film.
Is your film ‘Manchali’ with Narmaada Ahuja still on? I have no idea. The makers have not got back to me.
How was it like working with the ensemble cast? It was great fun with a lot of bonhomie and frolic and we got along very well.
You have quite a female fans. Yes. I have become an actor due to my fan following among the ladies. What next? I will start training for the forthcoming Commonwealth games.

A scene from the movie Holiday: A soldier is never off duty
O
ften a film’s publicity can be so misleading. Till one saw last week’s Holiday: A soldier is never off duty, the idea conveyed was that the leading lady of the film, played by Sonakshi Sinha, is a boxer. It sounded rather exciting, that in a mainstream movie, there is a female boxer, and it would seem obvious that she would put those skills to use during action sequence in the film.
RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot How disappointing it was then, to find that she just poses as a boxer in a song, in which she also plays all kinds of sport from football to basketball to athletics. Nobody can be a master of so many games, so it is clear, she is just playing a fancy dress game for this number, in which the leading man, Akshay Kumar, watches her and occasionally interrupts her game.
Typically, in an old-style Southern action film, the woman has nothing to do. Sonakshi Sinha is heroine only in name, pulled out when the film needs a song-and-dance
number. In a scene before this sporty song, Akshay has rejected her, because she seems too demure. When he sees her in sporting gear, he falls in love and wants to marry her, at
which she rejects him. Later, she sees a pretty friend of hers marrying an ordinary-looking bald man. She is tactless enough to ask the bride why she is marrying an ugly man, to which the bride replies that men who are good-looking and intelligent are tough to find, so it’s best to accept whoever is at hand. At which Saiba (Sonakshi), rushes straight to Akshay and proposes marriage to him. This is the kind of character an A-list actress plays, at a time when her contemporaries like Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut, Parineeti Chopra are pushing the boundaries for Bollywood actresses, and even the conventional glamour girls like Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are trying to look for parts when the leading lady has something worthwhile to do in a film. Sonakshi too surprised audiences with her sensitive performance in Lootera, but that’s about the only one. In most of her films, she dresses up and sashays around, and as has been pointed out by others, plays basically the same woman over and over again, with not even much variation in her look. Saiba belongs to the past – today, if an actress wears boxing gloves, she should be able to deliver a knockout punch.
Mary Kom biopic’s release postponed P
riyanka Chopra's hero-giri in 'Mary Kom' just got much bigger. In order to buy time to give the film the global appeal of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', director Omang Kumar's 'Mary Kom' will no longer be released on October 2, as per plans, thereby leaving the coast clear for the Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Hollywood remake 'Bang Bang' and Vishal Bhardwaj's Shakespearean adaptation 'Haider'. 'Mary Kom' is a project into which Priyanka has been pouring her blood, sweat and tears. It is now being revamped into a much larger sports biopic than before. Says a source close to the project, "The producers, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 took a joint decision last month to postpone the release date so that 'Mary Kom' could be further developed into another 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. Viacom had unexpectedly massive global success with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. They are now looking at 'Mary Kom' as the female counterpart of Milkha Singh's biopic. The global appeal of Mary Kom is much more contemporary than Milkha. While Milkha Singh's biopic was retrospective in structure, 'Mary Kom' is being made even as the real life Mary Kom prepares for the next Olympics."

added. The earning figures include salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, as well as licensing and endorsement income paid out during the last 12 months between June 2013 and June 2014. Mayweather earned USD 105 million during the past year for 72 minutes of work in the ring for fights against Canelo Alvarez and Marcos Maidana. Pope to World Cup: Overcome racism, greed in sport V
ATICAN CITY: Pope Francis has a message for the World Cup: Let football be a showcase for teamwork and solidarity, not an exhibition of racism and greed. The Argentine-born, football-loving pope recorded a video message that will be broadcast on Brazilian television ahead of today’s opening match between Brazil and Croatia. In it, Francis said football teaches three lessons that can promote peace and solidarity : the need to train and work hard to reach goals, the importance of fair play and teamwork, and the need to respect and honour opponents.
Navjeet’s bronze opens India’s TIndia should assert their right in world hockey: Bovelander account at Asian Jr Athletics T
AIPEI CITY: Forced to compete within hours of landing here, shot-putter Navjeet Kaur Dhillon showed tremendous grit to clinch the bronze medal and open India’s account on the very first day of the 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championships here today. Competing on an empty stomach after a prolonged flight, the Punjab girl tossed the iron ball to 14.99m. Having set a national mark of 15.89m during the Junior Federation Cup at Chennai last month, Navjeet was earlier predicted to win the top spot in the biennial meet for junior athletes of the continent. However, a delay in the clearance of visa applications of the Indian team in Delhi, that eventually hurt some top medal contenders including ace sprinter Dutee Chand as well as decathletes Ankit Saini and Amolak Singh. Dutee Chand missed this morning’s 100m heats while Saini and Singh were non-starters in the decathlon. However, when the Indian athletes reached the venue for the afternoon session straight from the airport, they did so without taking any food at all. HE HAGUE (Netherlands): Indian hockey seems a work in progress, feels Dutch legend Floris Jan Bovelander who wants the erstwhile champions of the game to reassert their right among the new elite nations. “There is change evident in the Indian team, they were unlucky to lose a couple of games to late goals and that derailed them at the start of the World Cup,” said Bovelander, whose proficiency with the penalty corner helped Netherlands clinch gold in the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 Olympic Games. Bovelander’s penalty corner conversion lifted Netherlands to the World Cup in Lahore against hosts Pakistan in 1990. Six years later, he scored twice in the final as Netherlands won their first Olympic hockey gold. He retired from international hockey after the Atlanta Olympic final. IOA says it’s yet to take decision on 2019 Asiad bid N
EW DELHI: Uncertainty prevailed over possible bidding for the 2019 Asian Games as the Indian Olympic Association today told Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal that it was yet to take a decision on mounting a bid for the mega-event despite the fast-approaching deadline. IOA President N Ramachandran, along with senior vice-president Virendra Nanavati, met Sonowal at the Sports Ministry and told him that a decision whether to bid for the Games or not would be taken by its Executive Committee. Reports have quoted Sonowal as
having said that the government would support such a bid but would wait for a presentation from the IOA. IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta had told PTI that the national sports apex body would approach the newly-elected government to bid for the 2019 Asian Games after Vietnam capital Hanoi pulled out. IOA President Ramachandran, though, later said no decision had been taken on the issue. The deadline to present bid to the Olympic Council of Asia is July 1, according to IOA officials. After the meeting, Nanavati told PTI that no
commitment on bidding for the event was given to the minister from IOA. “There was discussion on the matter in the meeting with the minister but there was no commitment given from the side of IOA that we want to bid for the 2019 Asian Games. We told him that such a proposal will have to be approved by the IOA Executive Committee,” Nanavati said. Asked when will the Executive Committee meeting be called – which will need 15 days prior notice — to take a decision, Nanavati was non-committal.
It’s painful and frustrating, but have to move on: Heat coach
M
IAMI: Watching his team getting whipped in the match video might have been “painful and frustrating” but it was necessary, said Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, insisted that it was time the two-time defending champions learn from their mistakes and move on. In a perfect display of offensive efficiency, San Antonio Spurs stunned
hosts Miami Heat 111-92 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals here on Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. “It’s painful. It’s frustrating. You have to go through all those emotions of seeing the things that we could have done better. We went through the painful emotions today of watching the things that we need
to correct, and tomorrow we have to put together our best foot forward to give ourselves our best chance to win,” said Spoelstra during a media interaction on the eve of Game 4. “We did not play a good basketball game. It doesn’t matter ultimately how many you lose by or what the game is like. You have to learn from it and move on,” he added. Heat’s re-
sistance came a cropper in Game 3 as Spurs played made use of 19 of its first 21 shots and shot a record 75.8 percent in the first half of the tie. The coach, however, refused to get caught in the “wild swings” and preferred to focus on the next match tomorrow. “The next game is an opportunity, and you don’t want to get caught up
in all the wild swings and compound it and make it more than it is,” he said. Heat’s star player LeBron James said that the two-hour film session with coach Spoelstra was pretty demanding. “It’s pretty demanding, for sure. He gets up under us and we’ve got to own our mistakes, and that’s what it was all about,” he said.

DUTCH SEEK WORLD CUP REVENGE AGAINST SPAIN Netherlands' defender Daley Blind, forward Robin van Persie and midfielder Nigel de Jong take part a training session at Flamengo Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
S
ALVADOR (BRAZIL): Holders Spain open their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands tomorrow in a repeat of the 2010 final with the Dutch out for revenge. Andres Iniesta's strike four minutes from the end of extratime in the Johannesburg final crowned Spain as world champions for the first time and now, four years later, the European giants clash again at Salvador's Arena Fonte Nova in the mouthwatering opening match of Group B. With South American dark horses Chile and Australia still to come, a win for either side would set the group's agenda. Captain Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Nigel De Jong and Dirk Kuyt are the five survivors from the 2010 final in the current squad and the Dutch have made no secret of
their desire for revenge. "It was a big chance for us to win the World Cup and we were really close," said Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar. "It should always burn inside to make something right. To play against them now in the first game is a great challenge." Veteran midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who will win his 100th cap in the match, said the wounds of that defeat were still raw. "It's like a scar that hasn't yet healed. It always gets me down when I think about it," said the Galatasaray star. As the double European and reigning world champions, Vicente del Bosque's Spain are bidding to join Brazil and Italy as the only teams to have enjoyed backto-back World Cup wins. Cameroon clash key for mercurial Mexico N
ATAL (BRAZIL): Mercurial Mexico host a troubled Cameroon in the sides' World Cup Group A opener in Natal today looking to take the first step towards an eventual first appearance in the quarter-finals in nearly 30 years. Now coached by colourful Miguel Herrera, who missed out on playing for Mexico at USA '94 after being dropped for punching a photographer, Mexico have in recent editions failed to live up to expectations. In the past five tournaments the Aztecs have failed to get to the 'fifth game' and make the quarter-finals they last reached as hosts in 1986 when they bowed out 4-1 on penalties to West Germany. Critics would argue Mexico should feel lucky to be in Brazil at all. After a tortuous qualifying campaign, Herrera was parachuted in for a two-legged play-
GENEVA: Defending champions Spain look set to win the World Cup thanks to the interlocking qualities of their squad, which will allow them to outgun Brazil, statisticians said. The Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory said on Wednesday it had taken an in-depth look at the career trajectory of all 32 squads due to lock horns in Brazil. "This approach has allowed us to predict a hypothetical scenario for the outcome of the competition, suggesting that Spain will beat Brazil in the final, with Argentina in third place and France in fourth position," it said. CIES Football Observatory's experts, who apply econometric methods to all aspects of the game, numbercrunched a vast haul of data. They took into account league matches and goals during each player's career to date, as well as in the last two years, plus national team caps since 2012 and the total number of World Cup games ever played.
Snubbed Tevez switches off, admits he is still suffering
BUENOS AIRES: Carlos Tevez has admitted he is still suffering after being overlooked by Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella for the World Cup and intends to ignore the four-week long tournament. The 30-year-old was discarded from the Argentine set-up after missing a penalty in his country's quarter-final Copa America exit at the hands of eventual winners Uruguay three years ago. And he said he won't even be watching when the World Cup kicks-off with hosts Brazil playing Croatia. "I'm not watching anything, I don't know how the (Argentina) squad is doing, I've not heard from the group, I don't know anything about anything," said Tevez at a press conference at the Boca Juniors stadium, where he began his football career. "I'm with my family, I'm playing golf, getting some sun. I'm isolated because I'm a footballer and it hurts. I'm not watching what's happening, nor what's going on around (the team), nor anything to do with the World Cup." Tevez was in fine form this season, his first for Juventus, finishing top scorer for the club with 19 goals as they won their third straight Serie A title.

of chances and when they took their eye off the ball late on Bruno Alves struck the winner for Portugal in the 93rd minute. "We haven't been that convincing when facing goal, so we have to work on it," admitted Herrera. "We have to work on keeping focus all the way to the
finish. We can't be losing games in the last 30 seconds." Mexico, noted for their 5-3-2 formation which focuses heavily on the running of the wingbacks, will however look to capitalise on the internal strife that has simmered within the Cameroon camp.
SAO PAULO: A subway strike here that threatened to disrupt the opening of the World Cup was averted last night even as airport workers in Rio de Janeiro declared a 24-hour work stoppage in the main destination for soccer fans traveling to Brazil. Some 1,500 subway workers in Sao Paulo voted against going back on strike in a pay dispute. They had suspended the walkout Monday amid a popular backlash and government pressure to end the transportation chaos in Brazil's biggest city. "We thought that right now it's better to wait," union chief Altino Prazeres said, but added that he wouldn't rule out resuming the strike during the month long soccer tourney.

RONALDO, MESSI DUEL FOR CUP STARDOM MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2014
R
IO DE JANEIRO: One is the world's best known footballer, the other the most valuable. They have scored the same number of Champions League goals and are loaded down with titles. But superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are stuck in a World Cup dead end. Between them Messi and Ronaldo have monopolised the past six world player of the year awards. But each have attended the last two World Cups and failed to even get near the trophy. Messi has scored just one goal at the finals, Ronaldo only two. Now though the weight of Argentinian hopes rests on Messi's slight shoulders. Portugal are desperate for Ronaldo's goals to get out of one of the most difficult groups in the contest. The Brazil World Cup could finally decide whether the name of Messi or Ronaldo is etched into football legend alongside the Peles and Diego Maradonas and Zinedine Zidanes. It is the competition which transforms reputations. The softly-spoken Messi is 26, just 1.69 metres (5ft 7inch) tall and 67 kilogrammes (148 pounds) in weight. But his goalscorer record and brilliance pack the same weight as the 29year-old Ronaldo -- 1.85m (6ft 1inch) and 80kgs (176 pounds) -who revels in his glamour lifestyle. Messi capture three Champi-
CUIABA (BRAZIL): World Cup outsiders Australia are aiming to punch above their weight and give a Chile side choca-bloc with talent a bloody nose here tomorrow. The two Group B protagonists are worlds apart in FIFA's rankings -- Chile are 14 with Australia down at 62 -- so the South Americans are heavy favourites to sweep aside the Socceroos and get their campaign off to the perfect start. The odds may be stacked against them, but Australia, unshackled by any smidgen of pressure, are not short of self-belief ahead of this clash against a team they held to a goalless draw on their World Cup debut in 1974. "We don't care who we're up against," said Swiss-based attacking midfielder Dario Vidosic. "There can be 11 Ronaldos or Messis out there. We want to make everybody proud back home. We've worked very hard to get to this stage. We've got three guaranteed games and we're just going to give it everything that we can to get out of the group stage." Coach Ange Postecoglou's largely transitional side is skippered by Crystal Palace's Mile Jedinak and features experienced duo Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano. The Aussies laid down a marker of their intent in a battling single goal defeat to fellow finalists Croatia in their last warm-up.
VIDAL KEY FOR CHILE Coached by Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, the South Americans take to the Arena Pantanal pitch buoyed by the apparent recovery from injury of midfield star Arturo Vidal. The Juventus man, who underwent knee surgery last month, was a doubt after battling an inflammation. But he appeared to have shrugged off that problem when turning out yesterday for his first training session since making an unforecast 15-minute comeback a week ago in the 2-0 friendly victory over Northern Ireland. Like Vidal, another vital component of this Chile team is Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.

ons League wins with Barcelona while Ronaldo responded by adding a crown for Real Madrid last month to his earlier success with Manchester United. Both average more than 50 goals a year in all competitions for their clubs. Ronaldo is the world's most recognisable and marketable footballer, according to the Repucom, a sports marketing research company. But Messi remains the world's most valuable footballer on the market, according to the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory. It put the Argentine's value at 216 million euros ($294 million), while because of his age Ronaldo was worth just 114 million euros. Reaching Pele Heights The case for the elevation of Messi and Ronaldo to the almost deified heights of Pele and Maradona would surely be unanswerable were either to lift the trophy on July 13 in Rio. "Both players are incredibly great athletes and both have outstanding qualities. Both can win a match in their club or national team on their own," said Ottmar Hitzfeld, the respected German coach who will be in charge of Switzerland at the World Cup. But the World Cup, high pressure over one month, is vastly different from the Spanish league and Champions League duties which Messi and Ronaldo so brilliantly execute week in, week out.
We need to avoid Brazil: Van Hooijdonk W
hen Group B gets underway on Friday, with the eagerly anticipated tie between Spain and the Netherlands in a rematch of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Final, the stakes may not be as high as the last time the sides met at the tournament. However, for former Oranje striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, the occasion still offers his compatriots more than just a chance for revenge. “If you look at the match schedule and look ahead to the next round than it’s clear that we need to win the group,” the 44-
year-old told FIFA.com. “That would mean we’d be likely to avoid playing Brazil and it’d be difficult to face the hosts. The important thing is not to lose the
first game so that you don’t put yourself under pressure straight away for the second match.” The fact that Spain are the Netherlands' first opponents certainly adds extra spice to the encounter, and memories of the Dutch defeat in Johannesburg are still relatively fresh for Van Hooijdonk. “It was a huge disappointment and then with the next World Cup on the horizon, the same two teams were pitted against each other again,” the 46-time international said of the moment the group-stage draw was made.

Italians charge fee from journalists in World Cup! T
URIN (ITALY): The Italian football team is quite literally acting pricey at the World Cup, inviting the ire of journalists wanting to cover the four-time champions in Brazil. The Italian Football Federation has imposed a fee for providing video news at press conferences in Brazil -- a move that has been condemned by editors, publishers and news agencies. The fee is being levied on news organisations such as TV news agencies which provide news
video content to thousands of stations as well as to editorial websites. The move by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to charge TV news agencies and other press at national team press conferences is unprecedented at the World Cup. It has led to growing protests across the news media and was raised at a global news industry conference taking place here. Andrew Moger, Executive Director of the News Media Coali-

tion, said: "Charging for creating news is an assault on press freedom. A press conference, especially one involving a national side, is by its very nature an open press event." "In fact the function of news agencies providing text and photographs or news video serve the interests of the team, its sponsors and the public through their established distribution networks and therefore exposure of the team, partners and players," he added.
Germany goalkeeper Neuer fit to face Portugal ANTO S ANDRE (BRAZIL):
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be fit to face Portugal in their World Cup opener having fully recovered from a shoulder injury, the team's goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke has confirmed. Germany kick-off their Group G campaign in Salvador on Monday, but the 28-yearold Neuer had been a concern after receiving intense treatment since injuring his shoulder for Bayern Munich in the German Cup final four weeks ago. "He's doing really well and he's completely ready to play," said Koepke yesterday. Germany's goalkeeping coach said they had not been taking any risks with Neuer's injury, but "Manuel has confidence in the shoulder and things are good for the first World Cup match".

AO PAULO: Once the tear gas had settled and the red-clad protesters had fled, the Sao Paulo man stuck his head out the window and shouted a message encapsulating the divide troubling Brazil on kick-off day: “Today there will be a Cup!” The protesters’ slogan that “There won’t be a Cup” has dogged Brazil for the past year, marring preparations for the opening match in Sao Paulo’s shiny new — if chronically delayed and over-budget — Corinthians Arena at 5:00 pm (2000 GMT) today. Brazil’s ambivalence toward the World Cup was on full display as the country geared up for the game, the sea of green and yellow in some areas contrasting with the clashes between police and protesters in Sao Paulo and fears of more nationwide. Spiranovic: We will have no fear W
hen Holger Osieck’s three years at the Australia helm were brought to an end against France in Paris last year, the blood pressure of Socceroos fans no doubt rose a little with their flights to Brazil just nine months away, no coach, and just a handful of games to go. However, with the arrival of Ange Postecoglou a few weeks later, they had not only hired one of the most trusted names on the Aussie scene, they had also bought themselves some time. Postecoglou has spent almost half of this century leading various Australian youth teams, as well as having stints at Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory, and with many of his former charges among the Socceroos squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, familiarity has allowed for a speedy transition. Matt McKay, Matthew Spiranovic and Mile Jedinak had all crossed paths with Postecoglou at FIFA youth tournaments, and were in agreement that having an insight into his signature brand of slick football has been a key asset. “It gives you a bit of a head start if players know the coach well, know what style of football he likes to play and his philosophy,”
Western Sydney Wanderers defender Spiranovic told FIFA.com. “I played under Ange at the U-17 World Cup in Peru [in 2005]. It was a great experience, playing on such a big stage at such a young age is a fantastic learning experience. “It always helps the playercoach relationship if they know each other well, and Ange has known me from a young age and I understand what he expects and requires from players, so that is only an advantage for a coach and a player.” McKay and Jedinak were part of the set-up two years earlier – also featuring fellow Brazil 2014 teammate Alex Wilkinson – when the Young Socceroos travelled to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2003. “It’s a long time ago and we won our group in UAE, but we got knocked out in the next round, so that was disappointing,” McKay recalled. “It was a good experience and I’m delighted for him that he can lead us into a World Cup. “Even back then he liked a similar style of football – the player movement, quick ball movement, being possession-based. I’ve had him at [Brisbane Roar] as well and it was the same there too.”
Sepp Blatter loses Platini support S
AO PAULO: UEFA president Michel Platini withdrew his support from FIFA counterpart Sepp Blatter today, plunging world football into open warfare. “I am supporting him no longer, it’s finished,” said Platini. “He knows it, I told him. I think FIFA needs a new breath of fresh air.” Platini, who himself had to come out last week and deny he had been pressured by former French Presi-
dent Nicolas Sarkozy to vote for Qatar in the controversial and scandal-tainted bid race for the 2022 World Cup, said he agreed with his fellow UEFA members that it was time for 78-year-old Blatter, who has been in power since 1998, to call it a day when his mandate ends next year. “I share the European position,” said 58-year-old Platini. “A new mandate for him would not be good

FIFA investigator has Fans invade pitch at Argentina training explosive Qatar documents B
S
AO PAULO: FIFA investigator Michael Garcia has said he had prior access to the "vast majority" of documents revealed recently which allege millions of dollars in bribes helped Qatar secure the 2022 World Cup. Garcia told the FIFA congress in Sao Paulo yesterday that he was prepared to use the documents printed by Britain's Sunday Times in his probe, shooting down media "assertions" that he may ignore them. The explosive documents have cast new doubt on Qatar's World
Cup, with major sponsors urging a thorough investigation and some FIFA delegates calling for a re-vote if corruption is proved. "The vast majority of that material has been available to us for some time, since well before the recent wave of newspaper reports," Garcia said. "That material has been and will continue to be examined and reviewed to the extent relevant to the investigation into the World Cup bidding process or any other investigation or inquiry." The British newspaper has published a series of reports based on millions of leaked emails and documents which claim widespread bribery orchestrated by former Asian football chief Mohammed bin Hammam. Garcia said investigators had combed through the newspaper's reports and all the documents attached. He said they had gone to "what appears to be the original source" and should have access the entire cache of data.
ELO HORIZONTE (BRAZIL): Argentina's open training session ended in disorder as more than a dozen fans invaded the pitch and reached Lionel Messi and his team mates before security guards could intervene. One fan knelt down in front of Messi and started shining the Argentina captain's boots yesterday. Messi laughed, received a hug from the fan and gave him his sweater before a security guard pulled him away. Other fans ran off with one of the balls that the Argentines had used during the training session. Argentina-Brazil is one of the world's fiercest football rivalries, but you couldn't tell from the scenes at Independencia stadium in Belo Horizonte. After cueing for hours to get free tickets, some 10,000 people watched the practice, many of them in Argentina shirts. While some where visitors from neighboring Argentina, the majority appeared to be local residents who, at least temporarily, had switched allegiances. "Brazilians like Argentina. Tiago Tanure, a 16-year-old wearing an Argentina shirt, was one example. "Messi, (Sergio) Arguero. I like the team, I like the country," he said. Debora Demetrio, 36, came to see Messi but said she was ashamed to see so many Brazilians
wearing Argentina colors. "Very sad," she said, with a smile that revealed she wasn't too upset. "I'm 100 percent for Brazil." Fans from both sides are hoping for an epic final between the South American football powers. Brazil has won five World Cups and Argentina two.
