Continued from pg 1 « Thackeray? When Balasaheb was alive, Sharad Pawar had a silent rapport with him. Pawar said: “Thackeray has made the Shiv Sena strong. The press had written him off. It was proved wrong. Uddhav has emerged a strong leader.” Maybe now Pawar is ready to support the strong leader as Chief Minister too. “Uddhav has made the Sena strong. The Sena has done well in the Lok Sabha elections. The party has proved it is popular.” Sharad Pawar's statement and the praise he has showered on Uddhav indicates that the NCP which is dead set against the BJP and the Congress will support the Shiv Sena in a postpoll scenario. Sharad Pawar has made scathing attacks on Narendra Modi in the last few days. He has even said that Modi is not fit to be Prime Minister. Naturally then, the NCP is looking for some space in the power scene. It can still share it with the Shiv Sena – in fact, that is the only way in the future for its survival.

Nearly three-and-a-half lakh people – about 250,000 in AP and nearly one lakh in Odisha--were evacuated and tens of thousands of people were still being taken to safe places and housed in special shelters, officials said. High velocity winds battered Visakhapatnam, which is home to a Naval base, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts throwing normal life out of gear after the cyclone made landfall shortly before noon downing power and communications lines and closing roads and railways. Trees were uprooted and roofs of thatched huts and sheds and hoardings blown away, reports PTI. Transport services came to to a halt in the region. Dozens of trains were either cancelled or diverted

and flights in the region were also disrupted. Streets largely wore a deserted look as panic-stricken residents remained indoors. According to Andhra Pradesh's Revenue (Disaster Management) Department, the cyclone left railway lines in Visakhapatnam badly damaged, besides causing "damage" to the airport there. A total of 2,48,004 people were "affected" by Hudhud, which also damaged 70 houses and left 34 animals dead, it said. Three people were killed in rainrelated incidents in AP while one person lost his life in Odisha. "The impact is tremendous," Union Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju told PTI. "Three deaths have been reported due to impact of Hudhud. Two died after trees fell on them and one in collapse of compoundwall in Visakhapatnam and Srikaku-

lam districts, respectively," AP Chief Secretary IVR Krishna Rao said. A fisherman was caught in the sea current amid a tidal surge while he was trying to save his fishing boat anchored in the coast of Puri, Special Relief Commissioner P K Mohapatra said. On Saturday, a nine-year-old girl drowned when a boat engaged in evacuation of the people in Satbhaya area of Kendrapara district capsized in the Baunsagadi rivulet. In Delhi, IMD Director Laxman Singh Rathore said that as the cyclone was crossing AP coastline the wind speed was 170-180 kmph and gusting up to 195 kmph. Cyclone Hudhud lost its intensity by evening as it moved further 60 km northwest of Visakhapatnam, the IMD said. Cyclone Hudhud, which made a landfall in Andhra Pradesh this noon, lost its intensity by evening as it moved further 60 km northwest of Visakhapatnam, the IMD said. Hudhud, which was so far a very severe cyclonic storm has now converted into a severe cyclone. Its speed is now limited to 100-110 kmph, said M Mahapatra, scientist at the Cyclone Warning Division of IMD.

Of course, they are sharing the same platform! To express their different opinions on ‘Separate Vidarbha’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday promised Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu all possible assistance as Cyclone Hudhud made landfall leaving five persons dead in the state and neighbouring Odisha. The Prime Minister, who had on Saturday held an emergency highlevel meeting to review preparedness for the cyclone, yesterday spoke to Naidu over phone and discussed relief and rescue measures. He had asked officials to ensure that rescue and relief operations

Modi had also asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to be in touch with the Chief Ministers of the states likely to be affected by it. The meeting was attended by the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the PM, the Home Secretary, the Defence Secretary and other senior officials from the Indian Meteorological Depart-

ment and and the PMO.

Our administration, so far as possible, wherever they can reach they are reaching," Naidu told reporters in Hyderabad. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the cyclone had its impact in different districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Puri, Kalahandi and Kendrapara. "Due to the hilly topography, the cyclone's intensity will reduce in next six hours and further reduce in next 12 hours. However, the area (Vizag) will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next three days," Rathore said earlier in the day. As the storm progresses, it will bring heavy rainfall to very heavy rainfall in Chhatisgarh, Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh and East UP and Gangetic belt of West Bengal, he said.

The Director General said the NDRF teams being sent to this coast city from neary areas have been equipped with saw cutters which can rip through wood and metal which are found to be obstructing road routes after gusty winds and heavy rains. Singh said the next few hours are "very crucial" for the force as special units and task force teams will be dispatched to areas of maximum damage. "The next few hours will spell our course of action. All our teams are in their designated locations and a number of them are on task or are mobile," he said. The NDRF has deployed a total of 44 teams to tackle the aftermath of 'Hudhud' in the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with 21 teams positioned in various areas of the former state, 20 teams have been mobilised in the latter. Over 2,000 rescuers and 220 boats have been pressed in by the NDRF as part of these 44 teams, the DG said.

Handwoven paithani: It can take one to one-and-a-half year to complete

Paithani is being handwoven since hundreds of years at Yeola. It usually takes a master weaver an entire day to weave just an inch of this material. Sometimes a single saree is completed after a year and a half. The weavers however are not flourishing because traders from other places sell machinemade paithani. To counter the threat, the New Wave Paithani was founded. And they brought the traditional Paithani sarees and held a fabulous show at Ravindra Natya Mandir. Today is the last day of the show. Some of the sarees cost Rs 2 to 3 lakh.

When the FBI finally tracked down the man known as the Hollywood Hacker to his Jacksonville, Florida, home in October 2011, they found someone who utterly fulfilled the stereotype of an online creep. Thirty-something, unemployed, possessed of dubious facial hair and still living with his grandmother, Chris Chaney had illegally accessed the personal email accounts of numerous entertainment figures and, in several cases, uploaded their naked pictures to the web. Almost exactly three years later, on the last day of August 2014,

had spent months, if not years, building their stashes, bragging about them, and then trading them casually in closed forums, the way others might swap recipes.

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan enjoyed a night out with American socialite Paris Hilton in Dubai. The stars had flown down to Dubai for the VIP launch of Cle Dubai, a new restaurant by celebrity chef Greg Malouf.

Hilton, 33, took to microblogging site Twitter to share a picture with the Bang Bang star."#GoodTimes at @CleDubai with Hrithik Roshan. Such a beautiful restaurant, my new favourite hot spot in Dubai," Hilton posted along with the picture.

Hrithik looked dapper in a grey suit, whereas the hotel heiress looked chic in a black dress. The other guests present at the star-studded event included Hilton's sister Nicky, supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio, Irina Shayk, Carla DiBello and reality star Khloe Kardashian.

Builder booked for fraud; sold firm’s Rs.3.20cr TDR A

n FIR has been registered against a developer who allegedly duped a construction company to the tune of Rs 3.20 crore by fraudulent Transfer of Development Right (TDR) of 930 sq metre area nearly a decade ago and then selling it, an EOW official told PTI. The TDR is generated on slum redevelopment projects where an owner or builder redevelops slums free of cost and gets TDR as an incentive under Development Control (DC) rules. Quoting the FIR registered on the basis of a complaint, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai said accused Nailesh Mehta of Dev Developers in Andheri pretended himself as the part-

ner of Zoomi Construction Company by preparing fake documents and acquired the latter's rightful TDR from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). He then sold the TDR to a third party, thus causing the company an estimated loss of Rs 3.20 crore, he said. The FIR in this regard was registered on October 2 following the cheating charges levelled by Javed Pathan (48), owner of Zoomi Construction Co., against Mehta and others, said the official privy to the probe. Explaining the sequence of events that led to the crime, an EOW official said Pathan had in 2002 embarked on a project to develop a slum locality in Teli Galli of Andheri

under the SRA scheme. As Pathan was facing financial troubles, Mehta approached him and expressed his willingness to complete the project as a sub-contractor and accordingly both the parties struck a deal, police said. After completion of the project, Zoomi Construction was entitled to the TDR as per norms of SRA, police said. "However, soon after completion of the slum project in Andheri, Mehta had allegedly represented self as partner of the Zoomi Company using forged documents and acquired the firm's rightful 930-squaremetre of TDR from the SRA and sold it in 2005 to a third party without the knowledge of Pathan.

15 suspected dengue cases detected; MBMC intensifies preventive steps By Suresh Golani

T

hough it has been a while since monsoon ended, dengue continues to raise its ugly head in the twin-city even as the health department of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) struggles hard

to prevent the deadly virus from spreading its tentacles. Four more suspected dengue cases were reported from Raj Mandir complex in the Vinay Nagar area near Hatkesh industrial zone in Mira Road. With the detection of four cases, the toll of suspected dengue patients has now risen to 15. The patients include a three-year old girl. All the suspected dengue patients have been admitted to private hospitals in the region. When contacted deputy municipal commissioner, Dr. Sambhaji Panpatte said, “Even as the patients have shown symptoms

of dengue, blood sample reports will ascertain the actual medical status. However, the health department is not only taking all preventive measures, but is also on a high alert to tackle dengue and malaria.” Meanwhile residents of Raj Mandir complex have blamed uncleared garbage and release of poisonous effluents in the open nullahs as two major reasons for the outbreak of the disease. “Preventive measures have been intensified and the situation is being closely monitored” confirmed, municipal commissioner Subhash Laakhe.

Indo-Iranian cultural fest held By Aroosa Ahmed

T

he Indo-Iranian Friendship Society and the Mumbai Iranian Association organised the cultural day of Indo–Iranian friendship. The event was organised to celebrate the friendship Iran has with India. The event commenced with the mahurat of the movie, 'The Irani Chaiwala, Hai Bada Dilwala' and was followed by a musical programme by a band of musicians named 'The Baraan' from Iran. Masood E. Khaleghi, Consul General of Iran in Mumbai, said, “There is a closeness of hearts and a deep bond which we hold with India. We are here today to review and have more emphasis with the warmth of heart and essence of culture. There is a sweetness which Iran adds to the Indian culture without disturbing it. Many people from

Iran have settled in India and have made India its home. However, culture is devotional to Allah but there are some cancerous elements in society which are ruining the name of Islam” Ali Irani, ex-physiotherapist of Indian cricket team, said, “Iran is one of the oldest civilisations of the world and the

roots of the culture will grow by holding such events. Activist Imran Khan who has been helping a man from PoK from being deported was arrested by the police despite having interim protection till October 17

By Santia Dudi

V

iolating the Sessions court order, the RAK Marg police arrested activist Imran Khan on Friday though he was granted interim protection till October 17. The interim protection was granted to Imran in connection to an FIR filed against him under sections 13 and 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946. When Khan's advocates got wind of this, they headed to the police station to have him released. They

then filed an application with Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Maria explaining the incident and requesting action against those involved. Special judge K R Deosarkar had granted interim protection to Imran till October 17. Imran was working with Siraj Khan, who had came to India from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) about 20 years ago, when he was 10 years old. Later Siraj married an Indian woman. Siraj has been accused of residing in India without proper

documents. His application for Indian citizenship is pending before the central government. “We found Imran in a room on the third floor. He was tied with ropes, his mouth was taped and the police were assaulting him. We told the Senior Police Inspector (SPI) Arun Inarkar about the court's order which has already been dispatched. He said that it happened because of miscommunication,” Imran's advocate Yusuf Khan told the ADC. “We wrote a first informa-

tion application disclosing the cognisable offence addressing the SPI. Later we took Imran to KEM Hospital for a medical examination but the hospital staff refused to mention the injuries. Then we took him to Sion Hospital where a proper medical examination took place. We have the report with us.” Imran Khan then wrote an letter to Rakesh Maria on Friday mentioning his abduction. He said that Rs 6,000 and his watch (worth Rs 9,000) was confiscated by the police

Though the victim shouted for help to nab the accused, the duo fled from spot at high speed.Ketke informed his employer because the sum was meant to pay the staffers' monthly salary. Soon after, cops reached the spot. According to eyewitnesses, one of the accused was wearing a helmet while the pillion rider was not. Police are now investigating the case on the basis of footage of CCTVs installed in the area. Police suspect it's an insider's job.

Imran alleged that the police also asked him to become a witness and give a statement saying that advocate Anjali Awasti and other advocates representing Siraj Khan are being paid by a Pakistani terrorist organisation, which Imran refused to do. SPI Arun Inarker of the RAK Marg police station denied any such arrest when contacted by the ADC and disconnected the call saying that he was in a meeting. In the order passed by the Sessions Court, a notice was sent to Rakesh Maria asking him to be present at the final anticipatory bail hearing of Imran Khan on October 17. Imran's lawyer are planning to file a writ petition in the Bombay High Court demanding a CBI inquiry or direct involvement of the CP in the case. The lawyers will also file application in the Sessions Court regarding this contempt of the court order.

By Zuber Ansari our stray dogs were found mysteriously dead inside the Central Institute of Fisheries Education's (CIFE) compound in Versova on Thursday. The pet lover who filed the complaint suspects that the dogs were poisoned. CIFE is the only deemed university for fisheries science in India. The dead dogs found inside the premises of the institute raises serious concern over the security and safety of the other animals. According to pet lover Zara Ruhani who filed the complaint in Versova police station alleged that someone poisoned the dogs. On the day of incident, Farida, a senior citizen who works under the guidance of Zara Ruhani, got the call from inside the CIFE institute informing her of the mysterious deaths. After getting call, Farida reached on the spot to verify the deaths and then informed Zara. Ruhani said, “It's very shocking and unacceptable how four dogs can die at the same time. It cannot be ruled out that someone from inside has killed them. I informed the Versova police against an unidentifed person, but they asked me to file application after which they will begin investigating. This is injustice to animales.” The investigation officer in the case said, “Based on the application, we have sent the intestines for

Asked by this reporter what makes him think he will win against candidates of national parties who have manpower, money and expe-

rience, he replied, “My instinct tells me so from the social work done.” D’souza said Muslim pockets in his constituency have invited him to hold meetings or at least put up an office in their area, “but I wasn’t geared up for that, as I never expected such good response from the Muslim community. Nevertheless, irrespective of whether I win or not, I promise to genuinely look after the grievances,” said D’souza, who excused himself to talk to a reporter from another newspaper.

ndertaking one of its biggest action against a tainted bureaucrat, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs 53.57 crore of suspended Maharashtra Deputy Collector Nitish Thakur in connection with a money laundering case against him. The agency, official sources said, has issued orders for attachment of 55-acres of land in Maharashtra, fixed deposits and bank balance amounting to a total of Rs 53.57 crore allegedly in the name of Thakur, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The case against the senior state administrative service officer dates back to March 2012 when the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Thakur for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, reports PTI. Thakur, during his service, has served in various capacities in

some districts of the state besides being deputed at the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). When he was arrested, his assets were valued at a total of Rs 120 crore while his actual monthly income was Rs 28,000. Taking cognisance of the corruption case against him by ACB, the ED subsequently registered a criminal case against the officer to track the "proceeds of crime" of the said act of corruption and subsequent laundering of funds to create illegal assets. An ED officer said the case if one of the biggest case of enforcement action taken against a senior government officer in the country. The central probe agency recently had issued similar orders against corruption tainted IAS couple from Madhya Pradesh cadre, Arvind and Tinu Joshi, as it attached their assets valued at Rs 10 crore.

Uddhav attacks Modi for ‘inaction’ 2 on Pakistan ceasefire violations MUMBAI | MONDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2014

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

W

ith the campaigning for Maharashtra Assembly polls set to conclude on Monday, Shiv Sena yesterday stepped up its attack on erstwhile ally BJP for breaking their 25-year-old partnership even as it charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi with "inaction" on the issue of the ceasefire violations by Pakistan. Playing the son-of-the-soil card, Uddhav told the rally on Sunday night in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai that Sena would have been finished had he accepted BJP's demands regarding seat sharing for the Oct. 15 polls, reports PTI. "If I had accepted BJP's demands, (our) alliance would have survived, but Sena would have been finished. I am fighting this battle with your support and strength, BJP will never come to power in the state," Uddhav said. Recalling former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's poem, 'Kadam milakar chalna hoga", on overcoming hurdles together, Uddhav said had Balasaheb Thackeray been alive with Vajpayee at the helm, the 25-year-old alliance would not have collapsed. Referring to Modi's rabblerousing campaign ahead of

Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray along with Yuva Sena President Aditya Thackeray during a rally in Mumbai on Sunday. Lok Sabha elections on dealing with Pakistan, Uddhav said, "Before Lok Sabha polls, we were promised tit-for-tat action if Pakistan killed our soldiers. What is happening now? Why is there a silence now?" Ridiculing Modi's claim that he would develop Maharashtra like Gujarat if BJP was

voted to power in the state, Uddhav said, "Why do you need the same party's government at the state and the Centre. When you were chief minister of Gujarat, was not Manmohan Singh the prime minister... Didn't you work for the development of Gujarat. "It is not necessary which

party is in power. What is important is who is the chief minister," he said. Uddhav said he would never allow BJP to remove Mumbai from Maharashtra or create a separate state of Vidarbha. "If you have the guts, liberate occupied Kashmir from

Pakistan and also take back our land from China," he said. Taking a dig at BJP over its claims of a massive response to Modi's rallies, Uddhav said that people from Gujarat were being brought in to fill the venues of the PM's public meetings. "You have seen Sena's love and warmth, now you see its anger," he said in a warning to BJP. Uddhav said his party will take back Marathi-speaking areas from Karnataka if voted to power. Uddhav also rejected the surveys which are reportedly projecting that BJP would emerge as the single-largest party after the elections. "I have faith in Shiv Sainiks who will ensure that Sena forms the next government. No survey in Lok Sabha polls had predicted that Sena will get 18 seats," he said. Indicating that he will not shy away from the chief ministership if the party won power, Uddhav said, "The chief minister of Maharashtra will not bow before Delhi." "2016 will be the golden jubilee year of Shiv Sena and Maharashtra's chief minister will celebrate that occasion... By 2016, I would have implemented about 50 welfare schemes envisaged in the vi-

sion document of Shiv Sena," Uddhav said. Uddhav, meanwhile, also criticised former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan for "neglecting the health, education and infrastructure sectors in the state". Referring to NCP stalwart and former state home minister RR Patil's controversial comments on rape and elections, Uddhav asked, "Will you vote for such uncultured people?" The Sena chief also claimed that the rail fares which were hiked soon after the Modi government took charge at the Centre were rolled back because of Sena's strong opposition to the move.

Jaitapur project to be scrapped if Sena comes to power: Uddhav RATNAGIRI: Reiterating its strong opposition to the proposed 9,900-MW nuclear power plant in Jaitapur, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday said his party would scrap the project if it is voted to power in the state after the October 15 assembly polls.

Cong-NCP’s corruption ‘jugalbandi’ stalled Maharashtra’s progress: Modi L

OHA/THANE (PTI) Stating that Maharashtra's progress would only be possible if the Congress-NCP's 'jugalbandi' of corruption was brought to an end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that a clear majority for BJP in the Oct. 15 polls would put the state on the path of growth. "Congress and NCP have ruled Maharashtra for 15 years. Whenever something went wrong, they only changed their chief minister. But did it do any good to you? Have you benefited from them? They share the same gotra (origin), ideology, actions and motives," Modi told a poll rally at Loha in Nanded district. "They (Congress and NCP) are corrupt people. This 'jugalbandi' of corruption by both the parties has to be wiped out from Maharashtra, only then the state can progress," he added. He said people can demand an account of the work done by a government only when a sin-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is garlanded during an election campaign rally at Borivli on Sunday. gle party wins elections with a clear majority. "If you want the right to catch the government by its ear (sic) and demand an account of its work, give us (BJP) complete majority. "People can only benefit if the next government is formed with (clear) majority. You can demand an account of the work done by the party after five years, which is not possible with a coalition government," he said. Modi promised that if BJP comes to power in Maha-

rashtra, the state and the Centre would work in tandem. Expressing confidence that BJP would be voted to power in the Maharashtra, Modi said, "During the Lok Sabha elections, political pundits used to say no one knows Modi outside Gujarat. But we (NDA) hit three centuries (300-plus seats) in our first match. This time, too, the political pundits don't know the direction of the wind." Modi kept up the attack on Congress-NCP during his

public rally in Thane. "Could anyone imagine that a state which once led the economy of our nation could be destroyed? But look at the power of the Congress and NCP, they did just that," he charged. Referring to the remarks Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP leader RR Patil had made in 2008 in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, Modi said, "After the terror attacks, an NCP leader had said that small attacks keep happening in big cities. On the day of voting, remember these words of his and then vote. He will automatically get the answer to his comment." Modi expressed confidence that BJP would come to power with a clear majority. "I say this based on my political experience that we will win Maharashtra and Haryana with full majority. "We have lost too much time. Now it is my responsibility to first make up for lost time and then move ahead with full force. Only develop-

ment can solve all our problems," he said. Modi added that one of the priorities for BJP, if it comes to power, would be to develop railways in the state as that had been "left in a dismal state by Congress and NCP".

"Our railways have the potential to become the centre of economic activity in the state. I am sitting in Delhi, give me power in Maharashtra and I will start various programmes that have been lying unused for a long time," Modi said.

Cong, NCP won’t get more than 10 seats each: Modi D

escribing the October 15 Maharashtra Assembly polls as Congress and NCP's "final exam", Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday predicted that both the parties will get only 10 seats each. "The NCP clock symbol indicates that only 10 legislators each of NCP and Congress will be there now," Modi said while addressing a poll rally in Borivli last night.

"This is the final exam of the Congress and NCP. This poll is not about who wins or loses. But this poll will decide the fate of Mumbai and Maharashtra," he said. "The type of government you got in Maharashtra and the way it looted you, it destroyed two generations. What does Mumbai and Maharashtra want? You must have noticed now what a good government can do," he said.

ven as political parties are fighting out an immense battle, campaigning for the election day which will be conducted on Wednesday, October 15, the Mumbai police is all set with plans to secure all places in the city to prevent any untoward incidences.Interestingly, the Mumbai police officials themselves are happy with the instructions given by their chief, police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who has directed all police stations to make sure that all the policemen on duty will be served with proper food and drinking water facilities round the clock during election duty. After the Congress-NCP and Shiv Sena-BJP alliances have broken, the number of candidates contesting the polls have gone up and keeping this in mind the city police has increased its staff to ensure safe and smooth assembly elections. Modern warning systems saved them I

F the cyclone warning system was not in place, Hudhud would have created havoc in the coastal reigns of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Thanks to elaborate arrangements made, only five people have lost their lives. There has been, of course, danger to many installations, destruction of buildings, power cables. In Odisha, they even used force to evacuate people who refused to get out of their homes. The weather forecast was precise. Weather warnings were issued hour by hour: and they were all correct. This helped the authorites to organise various measures for dealing with the cyclone. The navy did a good job and made sure the fisherfolks and their boats were safe. The Centre, too, kept a watch and gave all possible help. The governments showed that a cyclone or any other nature’s threat can do no harm if we employ modern methods fully and carry out necessary operations. Hudhud proved to be not a super cyclone and yet it was difficult to contain. Even if it was a huge threat, our authorities would have dealt with it successfully. It is unfortunate and inexplicable that they are still not able to prevent calamities like the stampede that occurred in Bihar a few days ago. With proper systems in place, we can prevent calamities like the stampede in which many previous lives were lost.

T is early days yet. Less than five months in the life of a new government elected for a full five-year term can hardly justify a considered judgement on its performance. Besides, Narendra Modi is not only new to the Prime Minister’s Office but he is also new to the capital’s labyrinthine political-bureaucratic establishment. Modi deserves time and understanding before a verdict can be passed on his prime ministership. Yet, even in the brief while he has been in the saddle in New Delhi, one clear trend may be already discernible. And, we are afraid, unless corrective steps are taken early, Modi may rue the outcome. In one word, it is his tendency to play it solo. We have said it before in this space and we have no hesitation in saying it again that all politics is a group activity. However strong and popular the team leader, and Modi, it must be acknowledged, is both at the moment, he still requires a large number of people to manage the ship of the state. To take that analogy about the ship further, the larger the ship, the grander the ship, the more the number of crew required on board — and a good back-up team on the ground as well — to ensure smooth sailing. The captain cannot concentrate all control in his own hands and expect that everything will run smoothly. He will have to necessarily delegate to trusted colleagues and allow them a say in the decision-making process. Otherwise, the ship will hit a huge rock and damage itself and, with it, the passengers and crew on board. But, sorry to say, Modi seems happy keeping his ministerial team to the barest minimum and keeping it largely denuded of real authority. Both administratively and politically it does not make sense. While it is easy to understand the negatives flowing from a legion of thwarted ambitions within his own alliance, the real danger lies in under-providing for the leadership of the huge number of ministries and departments. Without competent ministers who feel empowered enough to frame policies and take initiatives in their specific spheres, Modi will find it hard to manage the country with all its myriad problems and challenges all by himself. Criticism that he relies on a couple of his aides in the PMO rather than on his ministers needs to be nullified by offering empirical evidence that he is not a control freak. He may rightly have an innate trust in his own capabilities. He may well be a superman among ordinary politicians but, we are afraid, without sharing power with his party men, without allowing them to provide independent inputs into the decision-making process, there is every danger of the government developing a tunnel vision. As they say, the buck must always stop at the prime minister’s desk, but before it does it ought to have traveled a couple of desks below. Cunningness is against innocence; and cunningness, cleverness are not synonymous with intelligence. But to be intelligent needs a tremendous journey inwards. tral PSUs cannot be led by the PMO alone. To put it bluntly, the PM cannot be the one and only leader in government. He would gain immensely if he were to consciously become the foremost leader in a cabinet full of other leaders as well. Collective leadership, with the Prime Minister at the helm, will broadbase decision-making and help end the growing centralization of power in the PMO. As things are, faceless officials in the PMO have a greater role in decision-making than some of the senior ministers. Modi may not feel obliged to honour a large number of IOUs that he issued while graduating from CM to PM, but because it is human nature to expect a share in the pie, especially when one claims a role in its making, sooner than later his own version of ‘Ekala chalo rey...’ act might begin to recoil on him. Indeed, if Singh does not want to dwell on things political or partisan, he could still contribute to the proceedings in Parliament and in the Standing Committee on Finance of which he is a member by drawing upon his vast experience as an economic bureaucrat and as an economist. Unfortunately, he sits through the meetings of the Rajya Sabha or of the Standing Committee on Finance with his lips shut tightly. If that is the case, he may well skip these meetings altogether, isn’t it? Indeed, it is his failure to participate which causes one to suspect that like a number of other members he too marks attendance in Parliament and in committees only to get tax-free rupees. We will of course like to be proved wrong at the next meeting of the Standing Committee on Finance. Meanwhile, Singh, whenever asked to write his memoirs, offers a lame excuse. At least, he would have left behind a lesson for the posterity to remember, and thus avoid the recurrence of a wasteful diarchy when the real power was located outside the PMO. The award comes at a time when both India and Pakistan have strained border tensions. But the question that remains is, does the award committee have the right to confer the award to these two countries and act as peacemaker in one of the world's longrunning disputes between the two nuclear neighbours? Contradictory move THE statement of the MNS chief about the possibility of a post-poll rapprochement with his estranged cousin is self-contradictory. If Mr Raj really means it, then the very act of his party contesting a large number of seats will certainly eat into a substantial chunk of the Marathi manoos votes. It will indirectly lead to a low tally for both the SS as well as the MNS. True 'Swachh Bharat’ I am not against those who are busy taking pledges in public to maintain cleanliness, but I pity them for unconsciously admitting to being ignorant, and showing that their parents and teachers didn't teach them about cleanliness. I was lucky to have parents and teachers who not only taught me about civic sense but also practiced it without much publicity. Good habits are taught not by words, but are inculcated by practical display in a silent and sincere manner. No amount of publicity and spending will work compared to sincere and devoted efforts. One has to realise that cleanliness and civic duties should come spontaneously from within. Only when that happens will we see a true Swachh Bharat. Until then wait for some big event or for another photo session on cleanliness and public hygiene.

IN a nation where a glass needs to be chained to the tap of drinking water, where temples need a 'remove footwear' sign, where all ticket windows require a 'please maintain queue' sign and all hospitals, a 'maintain silence' sign. Pak must pay THE shelling of Indian border posts and civilians by Pakistani rangers is a well thought out policy of disrupting peace in Jammu and Kashmir before the ensuing Assembly elections. If the results of the Lok Sabha elections are any indication, there is every possibility of BJP getting a majority which will enable it to form government in the Muslim-majority state. This will be a big blow to Kashmiri separatists and their godfathers in Pakistan who are engaged in cross-border terrorism. Since BJP will be contesting the elections on the nationalism plank, it is going to be a referendum of sorts and a victory for BJP will be yet another loud declaration to the whole world that Kashmir is an integral part of India and is non-negotiable. Prez leaves for Norway, Finland

With an aim of giving a boost to India's relations with Scandinavian countries, President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday left on a tour of Norway, the first by the Head of State, and Finland during which efforts will be made to attract investment from Norway to India. Accompanied by Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Pon Radhakrishnan, the highlight of Mukherjee's visit to the two nations will be that he would be crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting the village of Santa Claus before he returns to India on Friday. He was given a ceremonial send off at Rashtrapati Bhavan by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani, Lt Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung and the three service Chiefs.

EW DELHI: The Centre is working on a solution to ensure that poor get benefits like free medicines and check-ups in speciality government hospitals on the basis of their BPL ration cards while eliminating income tax payers and top officials from the ambit of PDS. The new moves are aimed at better targeting of subsidies which the government wants should reach the needy and the deserving. "This issue is under consideration. We are trying to find some workable solution to ensure Below Poverty Line (BPL) category people can avail other facilities like free medicines with ease on the basis of a ration card," says Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. He told PTI in an interview that the poor are facing problems, especially in those states where the new food law has been implemented. The Minister was asked whether the government will take steps to ensure that new ration card serves as an ID card for other benefits.

Ram Vilas Paswan Meanwhile, the government is working on plans to take out income tax payers and ranking officials in the government out of the ambit of Public Distribution System (PDS). The Modi government has asked states to try such a scheme and Paswan will be discussing the issue with them. It has also given enough signals

At the same time, Paswan also expressed dissatisfaction over operation of PDS. "The benefit that should reach the poor is not reaching. There are many complaints about PDS." Prior to the new food security law, ration cards served as identity cards to the below poverty line (BPL) families for not only getting highly subsidised foodgrains but also government benefits meant for BPL people. With the scrapping of BPL section in the new food security law, the poor in this category are deprived of free health check-ups, free medicine and other housing facilities under both state and central government schemes because the ration card is no more recognised as an identity card for availing these benefits. In fact, under the new food law, state governments are freshly identifying the beneficiaries and are issuing new ration cards, which are not being recognised as an ID card for other benefits being given to BPL people.

Shah Jahan’s daughters: National Museum launches performance N

EW DELHI: Complexities of the Mughal royal lives portrayed by the daughters of Emperor Shah Jahan provided a debut story for the new history-centric performing show series launched by the National Museum here. A conversation between Jahanara and Roshnara, daughters of Shah Jahan and the sisters of Aurangzeb, was enacted by artistes from Delhibased troupe Darwesh in the performance titled "Shah Jahan's Daughters: A compelling story from Mughal History" at the Museum's Central Courtyard here on Saturday evening. The conversation brought out various complexities of the royal court, the position of women, the relationship between Shah Jahan (1592-1666) and his younger son Aurangzeb, besides the role of his elder son Dara Shikoh in court.

"The series intends to bring together unique performances telling stories from the past," National Museum Director General Venu V said. "It also reveals through discussions between the two daughters how one favoured Aurangzeb and the other did not," says Joyoti Roy an outreach consultant with the Museum. The five-part performance that lasted over half an hour was rendered in conversational style and strove to make historical aspects of the royal court accessible. "Moreover since the stories are told by women they become 'Herstories' than Histories," Roy adds. The troupe Darwesh, founded last year, says it is committed to excavating stories that are hidden in the past, locked in the present and buried within society. The group also offers storytelling walks, tours and workshops. PTI

A top official of the high-security jail said restricted items were found in the premises of jail number one, eight and nine which are close to the boundary walls of the jail. "Recently we have found articles like tennis balls, socks and small packets lying in the compound of the jails. A closer examination of these confirmed the intention behind the act. the official told PTI. Jail number one houses many eminent VIP inmates including Sahara chief Subrata Roy. Jail number 8 and 9 are adjacent to the busy Jail Road. The areas where the banned items were found are those where inmates are allowed to move during their routine intervals. "As a primary initiative we are raising the height of the boundary walls by 4-5 feet to restrict entry of any such item. The work is being taken care by the PWD officials here," the official said. Many such articles have also been seized recently from the inmates' possession and appropriate actions against those found using them have also been taken.

An equally optimistic Ritu Arora, Chief Investment Officer, Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance Company says, “There is a directional shift in the economy and we expect GDP growth to accelerate over the next few years which would drive earning growth for Indian companies. This augurs well for the equity markets and they are well poised for good returns over the next few years. The road ahead however, could be rough with lots of roadblocks in the near term. The equity markets in the current calendar year have given a healthy 26% return and our equity fund generated a similar return for policyholders. I would expect markets to continue to appreciate in line with earnings growth and

touch a level of 30000 for Sensex by Diwali 2015.” “We expect Sensex to be in range of 24500 to 28500 & for Nifty 7500 to 8700 for next one year. By Diwali 2015, we expect Sensex to be around levels of 28000 & Nifty 8500”, says Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, Director & CEO, WealthRays Securities Equities expert and Director of Altina Securities Clifton Desilva is equally optimistic. “Over the next one year the indices should generate a return of around 20% with the Sensex at around 31500 & the Nifty at around 9400 levels”. “Retail investors have to focus not only on next Diwali, but the Diwali's occurring in next few years. Markets have hardly been influenced by Diwali in the long run though- some volatility in the short run based on a "Good and Bad Diwali" may be expected especially in stocks and sectors which apparently are exposed to Diwali risk such as consumer facing stocks. ZyFin's macro research and sentiment surveys are making us positive on the Auto and Capital Goods sector as the economy comes out of the slowdown and indicators turn positive including core inflation, fiscal/current account deficits, commodity prices especially crude oil and a stable INR. Before Diwali next year RBI could certainly cut the policy rates, which will then feed into the economy lowering the cost of capital. The new Government reform momentum is also likely to accelerate by next Diwali which will

help the business sentiment in the country and thus the investment cycle,” says Devendra Negi, CEO of ZyFin Advisors. “The next 12 months are going to be heavily dependent upon many factors outside of India's control. Therefore, we will need to make some assumptions when it comes to forecasting where the Sensex can land by 2015 Diwali. That being said,

if external factors go in line and the Government is able to act upon its "Make in India" model, we can expect the markets rise by 20% to 32000 by next Diwali,” says Raghu Kumar, Cofounder, RKSV. The “Nifty can easily go to 9000 by next Diwali,” says Vikram Dhawan, Director, Equentis Capital. That perhaps sums up the mood of the experts. And in all cases it

seems that this Diwali may just be the best time to buy into equities. Stocks that according to the experts will give the best returns by next Diwali Views on the International front

VIEWS ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT

Globally, while the US economy is slowly recovering, growth in Europe and Japan continues to falter and structural headwinds remain in other major emerging markets. Investor sentiments in India are strong and positive, and we believe that Indian equity markets are likely to deliver good returns over next couple of years. Hence any corrections in the markets will be used as buying opportunities. Ritu Arora

International equities would continue to see fund flows as global commodity prices including gold, crude are low and cost of equity of many firms are seen lower which will boost corporate bottomline. Towards second half of 2015, central banks globally may start cutting rates which will be favorable for equities. Kiran Kumar Kavikondala

The Global economy, especially US is also on a mend, though not fully out of the woods. This will be beneficial to some of the export oriented sectors. Devendra Negi

Internationally, the crisis in the Middle East and the Federal Reserve are going to dominate the news. Stable crude and gold prices will be essential to keep the bull run going. Raghu Kumar

Indian and global markets are in correction mode as US Dollar interest rates appear to have bottomed out. However, unfortunately the recovery in the global economy is asymmetrical and stronger dollar bodes ill for risky assets like equities and commodities in the short-term. Having said that, strong US economy is always a good news and at some point markets will With the pick up in the economy both in take note of it. A general policy of RKSV is to not give stock specific tips. However, from a sector standpoint, export driven sectors are under priced. India's backbone from an export driven perspective is IT, and with no sights of the Rupee strengthening against the Dollar, we can expect IT stocks to do well. Another sector that has gone relatively unnoticed is the manufacturing sector. Finally, it's a relatively safe bet that retail is going to be a hot sector over these next 12 months.

BHEL will be riding the infra gravytrain, expected to be flagged-off soon. Godrej Properties stock price doesn’t reflect even fraction of the land bank embedded within the group companies, that is likely to be developed under it’s aegis.

Reliance Looking To Sell US Shale Gas Interest

R

By A Business Reporter

eliance Industries is looking to sell its 45% stake in the Eagle Ford basin shale oil and gas venture in the US for an estimated USD 4.5 billion. RIL, which bought 45% interest in Pioneer Natural Resources Co's Eagle Ford shale formation of south Texas for USD 1.3 billion, is working with Citigroup Inc and Bank of America Merrill Lynch to find a buyer, industry sources said. When contacted, a company spokesperson said, "Reliance constantly strives to identify means by which to create additional value for its shareholders" but declined to comment on the specific sale. "It is Reliance's policy not to comment on market speculation. If there are any required disclosures, Reliance will make them at the appropriate time," PTI in New York quoting the spokesperson said. Pioneer holds 46% in the Eagle Ford venture while the remaining 9% is with Alpha SAB's Newpeck LLC. Newpek too

Could create additional value for its shareholders is exploring opportunities to sell its share and is being advised by Tudor Pickering Holt & Co. RIL is also selling its investment in EFS Midstream LLC, an oil and gas gathering treatment and transportation network, sources said. EFS Midstream operates 11 central gathering plants in south Texas. RIL, in a July presentation to investors, had stated that it has invested a total of USD 3.91 billion in Pioneer joint venture since incep-

tion. 472 wells have been drilled to date with average production rate of 676 million standard cubic feet per day. The Eagle Ford assets spread over 230,000 acres have become more attractive after the US Commerce Department in June gave Pioneer permission to export a type of ultralight oil known as condensate produced from the region. The approval will "help ease pressure on differentials, which has remained key challenge," RIL had stated in the presentation. Besides Eagle Ford, RIL has two more shale ventures in US - 40% stake in Chevron's Marcellus shale acreage and a 60% interest in Carrizo Oil and Gas Inc's Marcellus shale acreage in Central and Northeast Pennsylvania. According to RIL's July presentation, the company has till date invested USD 0.87 billion in the Carrizo joint venture and another USD 2.59 billion in the Chevron venture. Its total investment in US was USD 7.36 billion.

iquid funds are debt funds with very low risk and volatility is also minimal as funds are invested in money market instruments such as treasury bills, government securities and call money. How does this work for you? These funds are known for their liquidity and can be invested for a short period of even 1 day. This gives an annualized return of between 8 to 9.5%, which is certainly better than your savings account. These funds help you to park surplus funds instead of leaving them in savings bank account. Liquid funds also give an advantage of getting this return every day (daily dividend reinvestment plan) unlike on savings account where interest is credited once in a quarter or six months. These funds unlike other mutual funds, do not have exit loads even if it is redeemed within a specified period. Listed below are features/advantages of

Liquid funds as compared to Savings account. Benefits of Liquid funds: Monthly investment as a systematic investment plan (SIP) or lumpsum - A minimum investment of Rs. 1000 (or Rs. 5000 for few funds) can be done in these funds as an SIP or one time investment. Contingency funds – Funds required for emergency can be parked in liquid funds, as these funds can be redeemed in few hours. Returns – Based on past performance of these funds, returns are around 8 to 9.5% Protection of amount invested – These are low risk – low volatile funds with capital protection Good product for those in business – As investment period starts from 1 day, any lumpsum amount received from a business transaction can be parked in these funds even for a day and can be withdrawn for business purpose. Capital appreciation – Growth and dividend options are available that one can choose while investing in liquid funds which is an appreciation to the amount invested. Withdraw on holidays – Few mutual fund companies also provide ATM card which could be used for withdrawing money from these funds at any point in time.

High Volatility In Financial Assets Is Not Helpful For Rupee ANINDYA BANERJEE

upee continues to exhibit low volatility. Over the past week the pair was caught within a range of 60.90 and 61.60 levels on spot. With the sharp rise in volatility in the global equity, credit and commodity markets, Rupee too failed to sustain below the 61.00 handle. Global economic data releases were a mixed bag. German factory orders contracted, Chinese service sector survey was weaker than expected, UK manufacturing too grew less than anticipated. Japanese factory orders grew much more than anticipated and also US job market survey pointed towards ongoing strength.

At a time when not macro-economic growth but rather central bank stimulus remain the major driver of global risk assets, it is no surprise to see market react to every half sign from any major central bank. At the same time, the rapid fall in the value of the Yen, which has depreciated between 30% and 50% against major currencies, is hurting the export competitiveness of other major exporters around the globe. Global economic growth has been revised downward by IMF once again, this time to 3.3% for 2014 from 3.4% and 3.8% in 2015 from 4%. A weaker growth in Europe, emerging markets, Asia to offset the improved growth outlook from US. The International Monetary Fund has raised the country's growth forecast to 5.6% for 2014 from its earlier estimate of 5.4% on the back of effective policies and a renewal of confidence following the elections. IMF also forecast that Indian economy can grow 6.4% in 2015 from 5.6% now. In fact, it must be noted that according to data compiled by Bloomberg, the consensus on global economic growth has deteriorated from 2.9% at the beginning of this year to around 2.5 / 2.53% now. Economies from the Euro zone continued to slide down the path economic under performance. The economic and finan-

cial sanctions on Russia can also be taking a toll on European economies, as many of them have deep economic and financial linkages with Russia. Indian industrial growth failed to impress as IIP grew barely at 0.4%, due to 1.4% contraction in manufacturing. Manufacturing, which constitutes 75% of the index, for April-August, the sector grew at 1.8%, compared to 0.1%

contraction in the year-ago period. Consumer durables contracted 15%, consumer nondurables fell 0.9%. Capital goods output also dipped 11.3% in August as against 3.8% decline in the previous month. However, on a cumulative basis, the sector grew 4.3%

between April-August. Trend line growth in IIP peaked in 2007 and since then it has been on a down ward trend, which is yet to reverse. India needs to kick start the investment cycle and along the way, government has to walk tough, as the country needs some hard decisions along the way to get back on a sustainable path of high growth. Global financial markets are showing increased volatility, which we believe started in the foreign exchange market a couple of months back and has now fed into credit and now global equity markets. It has been observed volatility in risky assets tends to rise substantially when US Fed ends its program of printing money, through asset purchases. Therefore, we are not surprised to see the same happen this time around. Therefore, going forward we believe Rupee would not benefit from this upward shift in global financial volatility and hence we expect upside in the currency remains limited beyond 60.60/80 levels on spot. As a result, we can see importer hedge their payables on dips below 61.00. Technically, the zone between 60.50 and 60.80 is a strong band of support and hence, with that as a base, we can expect an eventual rise towards 62.00 levels on spot.

Brand ‘SerWish’

onsumers expect great service. This is because the standards have gone up. Their expectations have soared. Their aspirations are sky high. So, today in India, just giving good service is not enough, you have to meet the consumer’s wish, serve the consumer well; this is what I call ‘SERWISH’. Gone are the days of rationing and manufacturers calling the shots to give small lots to consumers leaving behind a deep hunger. Now the marketers say “Dear consumer, your wish is my command, I will give you not only good service but good SERWISH, I will serve you as per your wish.” This entire change and transition has come about in the last few years because the consumers now have a choice, and brands want to be more competitive. Marketers have also realised that they exist only if some consumer buys their product or service in a regular fashion. Therefore it is important to them to serve the consumer well. My mother has taught me, that you must “first deserve and then desire”. I would add on to her teachings and supplement it by saying that you must “first serve and then deserve”. Marketers must first serve the consumer and then deserve sales growth, market share and profit. If a marketer truly wants to give good SERWISH, he needs to start by understanding the consumer’s needs and wishes. It is important to understand the wish list of the consumer, so that the brand can appropriately address that desire and wish. Whether it be an airline giving good SERWISH by offering a choice of veg and non-veg meals or a choice of newspapers and magazines or even a choice of a window or an aisle seat, it is a good way to start serving the consumer through good Brand SERWISH. The key is to ask the consumer what is that he or she wishes and then take it forward in fulfilling that wish in the best possible manner to improve the quality of life and please the consumer. It is perfectly understandable, that every wish may not be possible to be fulfilled or not even practical to be fulfilled. But there is one wish of the consumer which can definitely be fulfilled in 100 percent of times. That wish is, the wish to be asked “What do you wish?” Whether in the beginning or at the end, every human being has the right to wish for something that he or she desires. The wish may be appropriate or inappropriate, possible or impossible, right or wrong, from each one’s perspective that is the second part. But the first part is being able to wish and being asked by the brand marketer “what do you wish?” is a good starting point for good SERWISH. Even if the wish can’t be fulfilled, it must be explained to the consumer in a patient and pleasant manner, because it is important for the consumer to realize why his wish is not being granted. But the good news is that, in most cases the wishes of the consumers can be fulfilled by the marketer, if he cares to ask “What do you wish?” This initial question, unfortunately, is not being asked by many marketers, thereby reducing customer service to be after sales service. In my opinion, customer service should not only be after sales service, but it should be before the sale, during the sale and after the sale. Then truly they may be providing good SERWISH. Whether it be a product, as simple as a chocolate or a soft drink or a technologically advanced laptop or a plasma TV or a bus service or a cinema service, each and every product or service, must understand what is it that the consumer wishes. Then the brand marketer must make all possible efforts to meet the consumers wish. There are some caution areas here, obviously the wish should be legally sound and should not hurt any other human being, physically or mentally. Also, the wish would be relevant to the promise made by the product or service category of the brand. Copyright © 2013, All rights reserved. Jagdeep Kapoor can be contacted at jk@samsika.com

Afternoon Despatch & Courier A little background about your company and yourself ? Angel Broking Ltd is amongst the largest retail broking firms in India and I am associated with it for more than 8 years. Trading aspect of research which is Technicals and Derivatives is taken care by myself in the company.

At what point had you given a thought to making a career in the stock markets? After doing my B .Sc. (Physics) I took a front office job in one of the subsidiary of IDBI which brought me to South Mumbai. The job required lot of talking about redemption of bonds which had call and put option about it. And while gathering further knowledge about the subject I realised the huge scope in the Indian markets for such instruments especially in equities as developed markets were extensively using it then as well.

How do you pick your trades? Do you use technical analysis, or fundamental data? My trades are generally an in between of a short term trader and a long term investor which is what I call a positional trader. For generating such trades short term parameters from the field of derivatives and technicals are the main feed. However some knowledge of companies fundamental adds to the conviction level.

Known for his unique ability to analyze and accurately predict market behaviour, through his flair for charting out innovative strategies, Siddarth Bhamre, an MBA in Finance and presently Head Equity Derivatives & Technicals at Angel Broking, is also a frequent speaker on leading channels like CNBC-TV18 and ET Now on the F&O segment. His views are often quoted in industry stories and he has been regularly contributing articles to major financial papers like the Economic Times and DNA Money, among others. In conversation with Dominic Rebello, he emphasizes on the need for an investor to inculcate knowledge, discipline, readiness to change, accepting of mistakes, not over leveraging and never averaging to become successful.

« MARKET WIZARD

What appeals to you about trading. The short side or long side? Both. Its only that when you short this market and you go right as well you are in minority and that gives extra confidence on your tools of research. Otherwise whether long or short its all about increasing probability of your trade going right, trader after trade.

What differentiates you from other traders? It would be wrong on my part to highlight any uniqueness about myself because honestly it’s not there. 95% of traders lose money in this market and its only disciplined traders and ones who keep changing their analytical thinking according to different market scenarios who have made money and created wealth. By being disciplined and changing my way of analysing data I have been able to place myself successfully in remaining 5%.

What gives you that edge? Nothing is permanent and so is the way of analysing this market. In our markets liquidity is the key parameter in determining the direction of markets. Understanding different correlations and behaviour analysis of stronger market participants to certain changes in parameters is very crucial aspect. And not every time for the same change would the participants react in same way. There is no science to analyze this; it comes with experience and not many follow liquidity closely. Having decent understanding about this subject has given me additional confidence to believe in my research so far. Is there any applicable lesson to trading? To traders I would say don’t follow anyone blindly. Do all trades with certain parameters in mind and analyse those parameters when your trade goes right or wrong. This will make you better trader over a period of time rather than becoming a slave of some tips.

How much of what you do is gut feel? I give paramount importance to my research and try not to generate any trade on my gut. A trade should be backed by fact and figures and meaningful conclusion out of those fact and figures.

When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide when you're wrong? What do you do next ? Here discipline is key factor. Any trade comes with a stop loss and a simple way of moving out of loss making trade is follow stop loss. Its easier said then done, but one has to master this art, science, call it what you will. Averaging on loss making trades is the single biggest reason for people losing money in this market. I am against averaging a stock which is going against your anticipation for traders. If you are investor then it is subjective. Reversing a position again is not recommended.

A Life Insurance is of use (to the victim’s dependents) only in the event of death and a Health Insurance plan would compensate only for the cost of hospitalization. Some Life Insurance policies offer Personal Accident riders, but these riders are not comprehensive. The consequences of meeting an accident could be serious, like death or pause in income, which could last from a few weeks, months to even years. What could help in such situations is a Personal Accident Insurance Policy. A Personal Accident Insurance is a type of insurance which offers financial compensation in the event of bodily injuries leading to total/partial disability or dismemberment resulting from an accident caused by violent, visible and external means. This policy compensates the nominees even in case of death of the policyholder. It ensures the financial stability for an individual and his family if he/she is rendered temporarily disabled on account of an accident, thus plugging a major gap in one’s insurance portfolio. Despite commonalities, the Personal Accident Insurance is different from Life Insurance and Health Insurance.Unlike Life Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance premiums vary with the policy-

Insurance policy depends on one’s working conditions and nature of his job. And yes, a Personal Accident Insurance plan can also be extended to include the entire family under a single policy. Despite lower premium rates, the Personal Accident Insurance penetration in India is relatively low. The features of Personal Accident overlap with Health Insurance and Life Insurance. Since most people have one or both these products on them, people consider the Personal Accident as an additional expense and tend to avoid that. Another reason for the low penetration of Personal Accident Insurance is the lack of awareness of the product. People identify the non-Life insurance predominantly with Health Insurance and, to a certain extent, Motor Insurance. Many people are not even aware of availability of such product, even if they need it. Many of those who are aware of the availability of the product feel they do not need such a product. People generally feel confident about themselves and believe that an accident would not occur to them. However, the fact is that accidents by nature are uncertain and unexpected. While they do not occur to everyone, they can occur to anyone, and to protect the self and family from the untoward consequences of accidents, a Personal Accident Insurance is a Must.

W

Any positions you ever lost sleep over? No I didn’t, though I was disturbed by the fall in 2008. However, that disturbance was more to do with questions arising on structure and fairness of this market. In a few weeks my conviction was back.

What would make you wary about a trade? Generally participants are very fixated with their losses in a particular stock. They then go on a mission to recover losses from same stock. I call this as an ego issue. Such emotional trades are again a cause of concern.

Do you have a scenario about how the current bull market will end? Where do you see the Indian markets five years down the road? I don’t know about 5 years, but for the next 2-3 years, equities would be the best asset class to be in to create wealth and for traders my suggestion would be to get into more buying trades rather than selling in this time horizon.

Do you try to anticipate or follow market trends? What are the basis? Both. There are times when you have anticipate change of trend which is when you tend to avoid huge loss making trades and there are times when the trend is in its initial stage and strong and you follow it. There should not be any particular style of trading according to me.

hile most people have general understanding of Life Insurance and Health Insurance products, they are generally little informed when it comes to Personal Accident Insurance. A Life Insurance policy covers the risk of death and a Health Insurance policy acts as a cushion against financial burden in the event of hospitalization. Then what is a Personal Accident Insurance policy for? Imagine a situation in which someone is rendered physically disabled following an accident.

holder’s occupation rather than age. A Personal Accident Insurance is important for everyone, but it is more relevant for salaried individuals living in urban areas. Typically, salaried individual travel from hometo-office and office-to-home, every day, for months and years. In such lifestyle, chances of death or getting hospitalized for some illness are lower than the chances of meeting an accident. Despite all possible precautions accidents do occur. This may result into disablement or loss of limbs or sometimes even death. In such situation, an Accidental Insurance policy is as important as a Life Insurance and Health Insurance. The best part is that a Personal Accident Insurance Covers are easy on pocket, so one can afford it without any major drain on his pocket. The cost of (HDFC ERGO’s) Personal Accident Insurance with a cover of Rs 15 lakh costs approximately Rs 3,000 per year. And since the premium on Personal Accident Policy does not depend on age, it would be same whether you are 25-year old or 50-year old. The premium on Personal Accident

EQUITIES STILL THE BEST How would you describe your methodology? My confidence is high on data which we use to analyse the market, be it derivatives statistics or technical charts. Unless statistics don’t say anything i don’t react to the ultra-short term price movement. This would certainly be categorized as scientific way of analysing markets, but with tinge of art.

Do You Have Personal Accident Insurance?

What makes a trader successful? Knowledge, Discipline, readiness to change, excepting mistakes, not over leveraging, not averaging are a few qualities which a trader should inculcate in to become successful. My success is no different than what is mentioned for a successful trader. Remember, there is no compulsion to trade every day and there is always another day.

What is your take on the current market scenario, Indian as well as global? Markets are correcting from higher levels because FII’s are not showing buying interest off late. However they are not selling either. This lack of interest is more to do with concerns on global growth slowing down. This is clearly getting reflected in prices of crude oil. Though this is a serious concern, we are not expecting this correction to be very deep and long lasting and hence investors should use this opportunity to invest while traders, can lighten up their positions.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | MONDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2014

« TOP VIEW Long ago, Ben Graham taught me that ‘Price is what you pay; value is what you get.’ Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down. —Legendary Investor Warren Buffett

Technical Stock Picks For The Week By Sanjay R. Bhatia

Nifty Nears A Major Support Level NSE India : CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Monday (October 13, 2014) By Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty fell substantially on Friday (October 10, 2014) a net 100.60 points (1.26%) and closed at the 7859 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 7911 points level. It then rose and registered the day’s high at the 7924 points level at 1.24 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.40 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 7848 points level at 3.10 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 76 points and closed below the psychologically important 7900 points level. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 39 were losers, while 11 stocks closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in IT and technology stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in metal, auto and FMCG stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 6.16%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 408 were gainers, 1141 were losers and 40 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has exited the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is at the slow D line (neutral). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7816 points level. The next support is at the 7615 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8138 points level. The next resistance is at the 8246 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7877 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7831. Support (2) = 7802. Resistance (1) = 7907. Resistance (2) = 7953.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a long black body candle. This is negative. Further, the index has dropped above its 5 day’s moving average. The index is now below its 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages and all the three averages are declining and also negatively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate weakness. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major support level at the 7816 points level. There is a possibility that the index could find some support and reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, then a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is decreasing in strength.

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Has dropped below its 5-day average (at 7892) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 7976) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 8021) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 7071) Positive.

Ekta Kapoor: My female characters are empowered to hit back, if humiliated T

By Chaitanya Padukone

elly-biz czarina Ekta Kapoor has been playing her trump cards well both on the telly arena as also in the filmy orbit. All set to flag off her latest volatile yet sentimental offbeat daily soap saga ‘Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai’ this Thursday, which has a small-town culture with the backdrop of Patna city on this newly launched Sony Pal channel headed by the dynamic Anooj Kapoor, madame Ekta has a snappy convesation with Chaitanya Padukone. Your slim-trim avatar is eliciting ‘Oo la la’ reactions from envious females! All thanks to jogging and my diet regime. And then don’t all girls want to fit into new clothes. Its just a pre-Diwali scene. Thereafter, all the yummy chocolate-cakes will make their flabby presence felt. (laughs) Your TV shows are known for an upmarket metro milieu--you have made a drastic departure this time. That’s true – I have sneaked out of my comfort zone. With ‘Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai’ (‘YDSRH’) its my reinvented tribute to love, that transforms, against a backdrop of a small town culture. Even the time slot is 7 pm. Lot of research has brought in the authentic ambience and I have cast this talented actress, Aparna Dixit (she played the younger sister's role, in landmark serial ‘Pavitra Rishta’) to play ‘Poorvi’ opposite Navi Bhangu who plays the spoilt brat ‘Arjun’. But won’t your loyal audiences miss out on the aristocratic ambience and arrogant characters in ‘Yeh Dil..’ Not at all. In ‘YDSRH’, we have this filthy rich small town 'ayyash' coal mafia family which is rolling in wealth and decadence. With the power of money, they can get away with just about anything, including arrogant machismo and abducting nubile girls. The promos of ‘Yeh Dil..’ show the lead male character with a brash attitude bossing over a docile looking girl. That’s just a ‘jhalak’. There will be an ongoing conflict of progressive versus decadence, even as we break prototypes but respect values. Female home viewers may rest assured, that in all my TV serials, the female characters are all highly ‘empowered’ to give a befitting reply to bad behaviour, if provoked. Jai Maata Di!

TV TATTLE

Drama across the border

Anuj Sachdev was in the business of manufacturing shoes before he started modeling and then acting. He was first seen in 'MTV Roadies' after which he did a small cameo in 'Delhi Heights'. Anuj then went on to do shows like 'Sab Ki Ladli Bebo' (his most popular show on TV), 'Phir Subah Hogi' and 'Chanchan' (his last show on TV). Anuj has done two Punjabi films 'Haani' with Harbhajan Mann and his upcoming film 'Police in Pollywood'. Anuj's film 'Police in Punjabi' releases on October 10. Anuj also was seen playing Saqeeb Salim's elder brother in Amol Gupte's recent film 'Hawaa Hawaaii'. His latest show is Rajan Shahi's 'Itti Si Khushi' on Sony which launched last week. We caught up with the talented Anuj to know more about the show.

‘Itti Si Khushi’!

Anuj Sachdev’s emotional act in By Sandeep Hattangadi

The show ‘Itti Si Khushi’ sounds different from other Rajan Shahi shows. Yes. 'Itti is Khushi' is an unusual and heart-tugging story of a girl, Neha Saxena, who meets with a near death accident at the age of 14 and slips into a coma for 12 years. She wakes up as a beautiful 26-year-old, only to realise that she has missed out on several important years of her life. For Neha, age is just a number as she wants to live life to the fullest. The story centres around how the innocent and fun-loving Neha decides to reclaim and relive the lost years of her life. With an unshakable fighting spirit, Neha embarks on a beautiful journey of rediscovering life for the second time!

'Humsafar' – the drama that changed the history of Pakistani Television industry is all set to premiere on Indian television on October 14 at 8.00 pm. ‘Humsafar’ is the story about how two strangers with strikingly opposite personalities fall in love after an arranged marriage, their trials and tribulations and how they overcome the problems with true love that they harbour for one another. 'Humsafar' became an instant hit with viewers in Pakistan, making Fawad and Mahira household names. Talking about the Indian television premiere of Humsafar on Zindagi, Fawad Khan said, “'Humsafar' explores the relationship of a husband and wife.”

Big Magic of the female actors

What is the character you are portraying? I am playing a Punjabi boy called Aman Goel who is carefree and without any responsibilities but when Neha comes into his life he matures and decides to take up responsibility and run the house by taking up a job and tries to make Neha as happy as possible.

Who is playing Neha and how is your equation with her? Smriti Kalra is portraying the role of Neha and she is a very good actress and we vibe well and complement each other as actors. Our tuning helps make the show more effective.

What about the rest of the cast? It has Paritosh Sand, Amardeep Jha, Mazher Sayed and Vidya Sinha. It’s a prestigious production because it’s a Rajan Shahi show and that on a premier channel like Sony.

With the onset of festive celebrations, Big Magic brings forth special programming as part of its larger festive offering where the female actors of its shows 'Akbar Birbal', 'Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai' and 'Uff! Yeh Nadaniyaan', will be celebrating the special day in its true authentic style. Big Magic will be incorporating interesting storylines in their leading shows, highlighting the real essence of the widely followed ritual – Karwa Chauth.

Crime shows on crime channel

Will you be doing any more films? Not right now as I am busy with this show and my Punjabi film ‘Police in Pollywood’ is about to release and I am very happy with the way that the Punjabi film industry is booming which was unthinkable some years ago. But now we have huge studios, directors and actors in Punjab.

Investigation Discovery (ID), the new Hindi entertainment channel, today unveiled its primetime programming. The network will present a wide range of programmes capturing true stories of investigation, crime and suspense. ID will introduce a gamut of investigative genres between 8 pm and 11 pm. Some of the captivating series that will premiere on ID include 'Disappeared', 'Who the (bleep) did I Marry?', 'I was Murdered', 'Evil', 'I Married a Mobster', and 'Blood Relatives'.

Can you compare television and films? Yes. The audience is different for both.

Any role models or icons in this field? Yes. I am a great admirer of Kamalhaasan. Anuj is sure to give a lot of ‘Khushi’to his fans!

Why a united Janata Parivar makes sense

NOTES FROM NEW DELHI

Dr. Manish Kumar

F

or success of a democracy, it is important that a strong and stable Government is there in the country. But more than that, it is important for a strong and trustworthy Opposition to be there. Today, a stable Government is present in the country, but where is the strong and trustworthy Opposition? The credentials of the Congress Party have been spoilt so much that it doesn’t even have the required number of Lok Sabha MPs to become Leader of the Opposition. The people’s trust in the Congress has been broken. The second problem is that the Congress Party is not doing anything either to win back the people’s trust. After the elections, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have become passive. So the question arises: will an era of one-party dominance – which can prove to be dangerous for democracy – return to the country once again? If the Congress becomes dormant, then it will be the responsibility of the regional parties to come forward and build a strong Opposition. A possible step in this direction was taken at Jind in Haryana recently: a rally of lakhs of people was held and Nitish Kumar fulfilled his duty by taking the initiative to

unite the Janata Parivar, and thereby start a new turn in politics. Jind, which is at the centre of Haryana from a geographical point of view, became the centrer of politics in Haryana on September 25 this year. Since morning itself the flags of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) were flying on the streets of Haryana and supporters were in a rush to reach Jind. From Rohtak, about 60 km from Jind, the roads were packed completely with vehicles. On the left and right sides of National Highway 41 and in the lanes at the side of the road caravans of INLD supporters were trying to move. There were jams everywhere and everywhere there was slogan shouting. The condition on the roads was such that it was clear that many people among them would not be able to reach Jind or else will reach only after the rally is over. Those people who used their minds, got their vehicles off the highway and took side roads in between farms and reached the rally on time. It must be mentioned that the Jind rally was of lakhs of people, but there were no arrangements in place by the ruling Congress Government of Haryana. The INLD deserves congratulations that without the police and without official arrangements, it was successful in organising a rally of lakhs of people peacefully. The rally took place outside Jind city near Safaido by-pass. Stretching as far as about 1 km, crowds of people was present. Most of the people who had come to participate in the rally were wearing traditional Haryanvi turbans and white clothes and holding green flags in their hands. Everywhere there were peo-

ple and more people. Those people who thought that the late Chaudhary Devi Lal and the Chautala family have been forgotten by the people of Haryana or have been left behind were proved wrong by the numbers at the rally and all their arguments were silenced. The INLD’s Jind rally proved to be a historic rally. Many people believe that in Haryana such a big rally has never been held before. In actual terms, people participated in this rally in lakhs. This rally was organised by Om Prakash Chautala in honour of the great farmer leader and his father Chaudhary Devilal’s 100th birth anniversary. Addressing the sea of crowds, Chautala said that an INLD Government will be formed and he will take the oath of Chief Minister from jail itself. But to call this rally only a rally of Haryana elections would be wrong, because the seeds of a new chapter of Indian politics were sown at this rally. At this rally, a campaign to unite the Janata Parivar was initiated. In the Jind rally, former prime

minister H D Deve Gowda, Chief Minister of Punjab Prakash Singh Badal, President of the Janata Dal United Sharad Yadav, former Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar and representative of the SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal Yadav, representative of the Samajwadi Janata Party and many well known people were present. All the leaders stressed one thing: that now everybody will have to unite. Nitish said that if members of the Janata Dal will be united, the beginning of new politics will be there. Sharad Yadav said that for making a new India there is a need for old partners to come together. Former prime minister Deve Gowda said that in forming the Janata Dal Chaudhary Devilal had made a huge contribution and today once again there is a need for the old Janata Parivar to be united. The brother of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal Yadav said that the fight should be fought against the Congress and the BJP together. It means that this rally should not

be seen only from the point of view of the Haryana election, but should be seen as a well thought out plan to create an alliance at the national level to deal with the challenges of current politics. This rally took place in Haryana keeping in mind the upcoming Haryana election and was organised by the INLD. The party was immensely successful in this and the rally created a virtual earthquake in the politics of Haryana. Notably, in this rally, the former chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar emerged as a hero. At the rally, he seemed like a national leader. His speech remained the most powerful and was much appreciated by the people of Haryana. People clapped enthusiastically at his jibes against Narendra Modi. For example, he asked, where did that chest of 56 inches go? The Army of China invades our border and Pakistanis fire bullets on our soldiers. Nitish said that the BJP had won elections by showing false dreams of ‘good days’ and people have been cheated – and the atmosphere echoed with sounds of applause. Meanings emerge from these claps. One is this that people have really started believing that good days was merely an election slogan which is not going to be fulfilled. The second thing is that people want to see Nitish Kumar fight against the BJP. This is the reason that Nitish Kumar made it clear that to stop the BJP, the uniting of the Janata Parivar is important. The speech of Nitish Kumar was entirely political. His language was easy flowing, but his words were precise and sharp. Apart from this his whole speech was centered on Prime Minister Modi. He didn’t leave any effort in his attack.

Politics now seems driven by a greed for power Santosh Bharatiya

I

t should finally be accepted that the era of ideology in politics has ended in the country, and finding any way, whatever, however it might be, to reach power has now become a new principle. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Jaiprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Deen Dayal Upadhyay – and if we take a name beyond them – we can also include Guru Golwalkar and the principles proposed by him. All these people have become irrelevant in today’s politics. That is why one should reach this conclusion that the era of ideology has taken farewell from the country. The Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party are of the same belief, be it belief in Hindutva, or be it belief with regard to Muslims, be it belief regarding the way of development. Both of them came together ideologically to do a differ-

ent kind of politics. But the break between them didn’t happen over ideology; instead it was over who will be in power and who can be removed from power completely and in that stead their own party can be established in power – this has been the main reason for the breakup. On the other side, the Congress and the National Congress Party’s principles were almost same, because of which they came together. In these principles there was secularism, including the poor in the race of development, and in these principles somewhere or the other farmers were there, even if they were big farmers. Between them too the break took place in Maharashtra because, instead of principles, more ministers of whom should be there and who should become the chief minister and who could trip the other and establish complete control over power – this selfishness became dominant. Actually an illusion has been created. That illusion is that in the name of Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party can win all the seats of the Legislative Assemblies. On the other side, after the Lok Sabha results, the by-elections in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have given the indication that Narendra Modi’s name will not work so much in the States. So the Shiv Sena here

Narendra Modi

Mulayam Singh Yadav

can win more seats. The Congress and the NCP too thought that the wave that was born during the Lok Sabha elections had died down and therefore they can win more seats and this illusion broke the parties linked on the basis of ideology and once again predicated the principle that taking power in one’s hand has become the one and only principle. The Janata Parivar is talking about becoming one. In Haryana, the former Chief Minister of Bihar raised this question in a very logical way, but the associates of Nitish Kumar himself are not very keen on uniting the Janata Parivar and be-

cause of this reason, after 1989, the Janata Parivar has gradually moved to the fringes almost everywhere. Nitish Kumar should be praised that in Bihar, he forged an alliance with Lalu Yadav, from which he got results. Actually, the biggest self-contradiction of the Janata Parivar is not considering each other equal. Every leader of the Janata Parivar is the biggest and the greatest and these leaders have also proved that when they are with Bharatiya Janata Party or the Congress, then all their ego, all their pride becomes distant and they work like adherents, but when they sit together with each

other, then they are the biggest ideologues, they become the biggest leaders and become the biggest future fortune makers of the country. This mentality has fractured the ideology of the Janata Parivar. It has also cracked the courage to fight for the poor and has also ended the possibilities of becoming a meaningful Opposition. On the other side it is a pity that no leader of the Janata Parivar is ready to learn a lesson from any of its mistakes. Now Nitish Kumar has spoken about the Janata Parivar becoming one and maybe nobody knows more than Nitish Kumar who those people are who don’t want the Janata Parivar to become one. The second big thing to unite the Janata Parivar, Mulayam Singh Yadav can do. Mulayam Singh Yadav, even after promising, didn’t reach the Jind rally in Haryana, where the rest of his associates were going to reach. Maybe Mulayam Singh Yadav’s health was not fine. He sent his brother Shivpal Singh to Jind and Shivpal Singh even gave a powerful speech there, but the presence of Mulayam Singh was necessary. Shivpal Singh to an extent filled that gap, but if Mulayam Singh Yadav had reached there, then people would have believed that the way had been paved for the Janata Parivar to become united.

Nobel laureate Malala worries about exams By Aditi Khanna

ONDON: Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai may have won the world's most coveted award but her main preoccupation remains her next school exams. The Pakistani teenager, who became an international celebrity after surviving a gun attack by Taliban in 2012 for advocating education for girls, said she is worried about the lessons she will miss to collect the award. The 17-year-old spent her first evening as the youngest Nobel laureate at home in Birmingham with her parents watching Pakistani television. "I had caught a cold and wasn't feeling so good," she told

surgery after the Taliban attack. "I am feeling really honoured and happy. People's love really helped me recover from the shooting and be strong, so I want to do all I can to contribute to society," she added. ONDON: Eminent British Indian author Salman Rushdie has attacked the 'mangled' language of religion which is turning British Muslims towards extremism. "The language of religion has been horribly mangled in our time, by Christian extremists in America and by Hindu extremists in India but the overwhelming weight of the problem lies in the world of Islam, and much of it has its roots in the ideological language of blood and war emanating from the Salafist movement within Islam, globally backed by Saudi Arabia," the Booker Prize winner said while accepting the PEN/Pinter prize this week. Rushdie said he fears that the language of "jihadi-cool" is seducing young British Muslims, many via Twitter and YouTube, into joining the "decapitating barbarianism" of IS. Rushdie defined "jihadi-cool" as "the deformed medievalist language of fanaticism, backed up by modern weaponry", saying, "It's hard not to conclude that this hate-filled religious rhetoric, pouring from the mouths of ruthless fanatics into the ears of angry young men, has become the most dangerous new weapon in the world today".

Star men Messi, Ronaldo in friendly shadows Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo on the move.

ARIS: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo spent a rare Saturday in the shadows as Argentina and Portugal slipped to defeats in friendly internationals staged more than 8,000km apart. Messi missed a first-half penalty as Brazil beat Argentina 2-0 in a fiercely contested “Superclasico” in front of 50,000 fans in the Chinese capital. Seven hours later, Ronaldo’s Portugal lost 2-1 to France in Paris. At Beijing’s Olympic Stadium, journeyman

Force India concedes 5th spot to McLaren S

OCHI: Sergio Perez’s secured 10th place at the inaugural Russian Grand Prix, preventing a no-points show but Sahara Force India conceded the fifth spot to McLaren in the team championship, here today. Perez earned the last available point after starting 12th on the grid while his teammate Nico Hulkenberg finished 12th to come out of an F1 GP without points for the third time this season. Hulkenberg had started from 17th place on the grid due to a five-place penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. Force India came into today’s race with a narrow one-point lead over McLaren but the British side today pocketed 22 points as Jenson Button finished fourth, just ahead of teammate Kevin Magnussen. Force India are now lying at sixth spot with 123 points, 20 behind McLaren. “It was a very hard race and a very hardearned point. We tried our best to push throughout the race, but obviously the fuel strategy was quite marginal – especially because I started the race on the medium and had to really push to keep in touch with the group on the softs,” Perez said. “When I was on the softs, it was hard to save fuel because I had to defend from Felipe [Massa] who was behind me for the whole of the second stint. So it was a hard afternoon, but hopefully we can be in better shape for the coming races.” Hulkenberg also said it was a difficult race for him. “We started pretty far back on the grid and I was struggling a little with my straight-line speed compared to the cars with which I was battling. We were doing well in the corners, but losing a bit of ground on the straights, which made it difficult to overtake, especially on a track like this, where the straights are the only good passing opportunities,” he said

Diego Tardelli was the unlikely hero with his first two goals for Brazil. Atletico Mineiro striker Tardelli, 29, put Brazil ahead on 28 minutes, before Messi curled his soft penalty attempt close to goalkeeper Jefferson just before half-time. Tardelli was on target again in the second half as Brazil restored pride after the World Cup, when the hosts were hammered in the semis while Argentina reached the final. “Brazil are the best team in the world with a great tradition,” beamed coach Dunga,

who is rebuilding following the 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany. “We have no big players, we are now acting as one team. The whole team is evolving, including me.” Barcelona icon Messi has now missed two successive penalties — two weeks after he also miscued one for his club against Levante. “We always try to win but today we couldn’t. It was a match defined by our two mistakes,” said Messi.

OCHI (Russia): Lewis Hamilton reeled off his fourth consecutive victory to extend his lead in the Formula One drivers’ title race and secure Mercedes’ maiden triumph in the constructors’ championship on Sunday when he won the inaugural Russian Grand Prix in emphatic fashion. The 29-year-old Briton, starting from his 38th pole position, cruised to the 31st success of his career to draw level with fellow-Englishman Nigel Mansell in the record books, finishing the race 13.657 seconds ahead of Mercedes team-mate and nearest rival German Nico Rosberg. Hamilton’s win lifted him 17 points clear of Rosberg, who made a mistake on the opening lap and, after a pit stop, recovered from the back of the field. Hamilton now has 291 points to Rosberg’s 274 with three races remaining. Just a week after Jules Bianchi’s lifethreatening accident in the storm-hit Japanese Grand Prix, where the French driver suffered severe head injuries, the race was preceded by tributes to support his fight for life in hospital in Yokkaichi.

Hamilton’s win was his ninth this year and the result delivered Mercedes’ ninth one-two of the season as they ended Red Bull’s fouryear dominance of the teams’ crown. They will now aim to beat McLaren’s record of 10 wins set in 1988. Finn Valtteri Bottas finished third for Williams ahead of Briton Jenson Button and his McLaren team-mate, Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Spain finishing sixth for Ferrari after an inspired, but troubled, drive. Australian Daniel Ricciardo was seventh for Red Bull ahead of departing German teammate and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel and Finn Kimi Raikkonen, in the second Ferrari. Mexican Sergio Perez was 10th for Sauber.

OLKATA: Atletico de Kolkata gave the football-crazy city fans a night to remember in their 3-0 drubbing of Mumbai City FC as the inaugural Hero Indian Super League football tournament kicked off in spectacular fashion after a star-studded opening ceremony here. It was Fikru Teferra who struck the first goal of ISL to give the home franchise a 27th minute lead to bring the 70,000 capacity crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium to their feet, while Borja Fernandez’s stunning volley from the edge of the box delighted one and all with some top quality stuff. Substitute Arnal Llibert (90+3rd) gave the Kolkatans enough reasons to celebrate by turning Fikru’s cross from the right to give a perfect ending to the match of the league touted to change the landscape of Indian football. From the short passing of ATK’s to the trademark English style long passes by the MCFC, it was high quality football on display, something that was rarely seen at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. The iconic stadium might have witnessed such a big crowd during in the reminded one of an East Bengal-Mohun Bagan but the derby never had experienced such motley spectators who varied from hardcore football fans to young families to waving youngsters. thing that was never experienced in Indian football. The 28-year-old Ethiopian forward got a long through pass from ATK’s marquee player Luis Garcia and before German defender Manuel Friedrich could intercept, brilliantly chipped over local lad Subrata Paul for the first goal. The home team had the better share of chances and Spanish short passing skill was well evident in the side which had its affiliations with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. Dominating the game in deft passing, ATK got two fine opportunities early into the game with Baljit Sahni missing a one-on-one chance with Paul in the ninth minute. Garcia was involved in both the chances as the former Liverpool star first set up Sahni before his leftfooted volley was saved by Paul in the ninth minute. Mumbai tried to add sting to their attack bringing in Italian forward Andre Moritz in the second-half and he won a freekick at the edge of the box but only to put it away. Shuttler Jayaram clinches Dutch Open, bags maiden Grand Prix A

LMERE (The Netherlands): Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram today notched up the biggest triumph of his career by clinching USD 50,000 Yonex Dutch Open Grand Prix badminton tournament here. The 27-year-old Bangalore-based player defeated Indonesia’s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa 10-11 11-6 11-7 1-11 11-9 in the men’s singles final which lasted 46 minutes to bag his maiden Grand Prix title at the Topsportcentrum Almere. Jayaram started off on the wrong note, losing the first game. But he came back to win the next two before Mustofa staged a strong fightback to claim the fourth game. However, it was Jayaram who had the last laugh as he went on to win the deciding game and clinch the title. The 13th seeded Indian returned to the circuit in August after a seven-month injury layoff. Jayaram had beaten top seed Rajiv Ouseph of England 11-8 11-7 11-5 in a 26-minute semi-final to enter title round. Jayaram got past Chun Hei Tam of Hong Kong in the pre-quarterfinals and third-seeded Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in the quarterfinals. Coach Vimal Kumar said it was a creditable performance from Jayaram and good for Indian badminton.

Mangaonkar outlasts Zahed to lift PSA circuit title M

Ajay Jayaram “Jayaram has had injuries in recent times. Despite that, he has won a Grand Prix title. It’s his career-best performance and I congratulate him,” Vimal told PTI from Bangalore. “This is good for Indian badminton as the country has now got some players who can win tournament of Grand

Prix level and above. I had always thought that Jayaram has got the capability to win this kind of tournaments,” he said. Vimal informed that the BWF has tried out a new scoring system of 11point games in the Grand Prix level and will have a review next month.

UMBAI: India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar toppled top seed Zahed Mohamed of Egypt in straight games to clinch the title in the USD 10,000 JSW PSA Squash Circuit 2 which concluded at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana here today. Mumbai-born Mangaonkar, seeded 2nd and world ranked 56, showed tremendous retrieving power and stamina to notch a hard-fought 14-12, 15-13, 11-4 win in the 52-minute final against an opponent from Alexandria who is ranked 45th. This was their first-ever meeting in the PSA circuit and the title win was Mangaonkar’s fourth in PSA circuit and second this year. Mangaonkar saved one game point in the opener after squandering the first and won on his third game point. The game lasted 20 minutes. In the second, the Indian was hopelessly down 4-9 before clawing his way back to 8-9, but then lost the next point to be down a game point which he saved. He then held the first of five game points at 11-10 which the Egyptian saved, held three more to fritter them all away before finally taking a commanding 2-0 lead on the fifth game point, the game lasting 15 minutes. The exertion took a toll on the Egyptian and he ran out of steam in the third game which Mangaonkar won easily. The 20year-old Indian titlist, however, will not play in the third leg of the tournament, to be held at the NSCI courts here from the 16th. In his absence and in the absence of 22-year-old Zahed Mohamed, India’s Harinder Pal Sandhu has been given the no. 1 seeding. Earlier, in the final of the WSA Tour 5 event being held concurrently, Nouran El Torky (Egypt) beat Chloe Mesic (France) 113, 11-5, 11-6 in 35 minutes. This is the Egyptian woman’s third title out of four finals. She had won the crown in the opening leg at Jaipur.

Success of ISL important for Indian football: John Abraham

By Monami Gogoi

EW DELHI: Northeast United FC, the team from the land that loves its football, is ready to launch its ISL campaign tomorrow against Kerala Blasters and the club’s co-owner, Bollywood star John Abraham, is finding it difficult to keep his enthusiasm in check. “We have great support, great players, I think we are going to put up a very tough fight. I love to say that we will win it, but my team says I sound very arrogant. So I’m saying we will put up a tough fight,” John Abraham said in an interview to PTI. The cluster of players from the eight north-eastern states along with their international and foreign counterparts,

including marquee player Joan Capdevilla, create a “fantastic” atmosphere, according John who is an ardour football fan. “Fantastic! I was shocked when I saw all my players together. We have Joan Capdevilla who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010. He is training the young boys and telling them what to do. It’s amazing! The whole camaraderie between our senior players, our foreign players and our Indian boys is absolutely fantastic. “We are working great as a unit. We have a great coach whose name is Ricki Herbert, national coach of New Zealand. And we have got the best fitness trainer, Lee Taylor. I don’t know about the other teams but our boys will run for two hours,” John said. John has high hopes from the inaugural

season and says that the event has fulfilled the dream of youngsters who wanted to play with international stars. “If ISL is successful in its first year and it is very important that it succeeds then all the teams of ISL-1 will be a hit, be it N-E or Delhi or Pune. All the owners are very enthusiastic and we are all a very strong unit together and are collectively representing ISL, we hope ISL works,” he said. The Northeast United co-owner has long term dreams for the team which is speculated to have the youngest squad in the tournament. “We are a really young club, we are probably the youngest club in the Indian Super League by at least five years. EW DELHI: Lauding Virat Kohli for agreeing to drop a rung in the batting order for the team’s sake, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the strategy used in the second ODI against the West Indies here could be continued as the batsman adjusted well to the change. Kohli (62), who registered his 31st ODI fifty to return to form, stitched a crucial 105run fourth-wicket partnership with Suresh Raina (62) to help India put up a respectable 263 for seven in 50 overs. The hosts eventually levelled the fivematch series 1-1 by winning the match by 48 runs. “Kohli is very experienced and he knows what the team wants. We were able to convince him to bat down the order and he understood that it’s good for the team and himself. We have to look at everything,” said Dhoni in the post-match press conference at Feroz Shah Kotla yesterday. “He is a kind of player who scores at a brisk pace. If some-

one is doing well at No.3 and Virat is comfortable at No.4 then why not. Let’s go with it. But it was the first time, so we will see,” he added. Ambati Rayudu, who took Kohli’s place at No.3, made a valuable 32 after India lost their openers early on a slowpaced Kotla wicket. Dhoni, who also contributed with an unbeaten 51, was happy with the batting order. “I believe it’s good for the team to have your most experienced players bat at No.5, 6 and 7. And yes it helps Virat to change his slot and have the cushion of runs behind him. It was a win-win situation as Rayudu (Ambati) also got more balls to settle down. It also disrupts the strategy of the opposition team. So everything fell into place,” said Dhoni. The batsmen did their job but the bowlers were not far behind. Chasing 264 for a win, West Indies were cruising at 170 for two when Man of the Match Mohammad Shami, who registered his career-best figures of 4-36, got the dangerous Dwayne Smith (97) back in

Smith made a run-a-ball 97 before being cleaned up by Mohammed Shami (4-36) as the West Indies’ 264-run chase derailed from 170 for two to 215 all out in 46.3 overs. Smith, 31, could not hide his disappointment but praised the Indian bowlers for their good showing. “I am of course disappointed at missing out on another century. Twenty fourth time I have fallen short of a ton, so it really hurts. They (India) bowled really well. We were cruising at one point and the Indian bowlers just got

yesterday. “I think we bowled well but it all came down to some good bowling by the Indians. There is something that we can learn from it and move forward,” he added. Smith stitched a crucial 72run second-wicket partnership with Kieron Pollard (40) before Man of the Match Shami, Amit Mishra (2-40) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-44) started the rot. On being quizzed about opting for a cautious approach against Mishra, Smith totally disagreed. “I am always positive. I just play my game. I don’t care who is there at the other end. I think we hit three sixes against Mishra, if you call this cautious then I don’t know. It’s just that we lost our way,” he said.
