SAYS MNS WILL NOT CONTEST THE LOK SABHA ELECTIONS IN FUTURE

I
ndirectly hinting at ditching major national parties, MNS chief Raj Thackeray categorically stated that if his party gets a majority, he will take the responsibility and lead the state from the front. Speaking to reporters at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Raj strongly batted for the regional parties. He said, “These elections are interesting as all the parties are fighting independently, hence the results are unpredictable. The prepoll surveys are either paid ones, or figments of some people’s imaginations. The regional parties should have an upper hand.” However, he refused to discuss possible postpoll realignments in the state. Thackeray declared that his party will not contest the Lok Sabha elections in future and made it clear that his outfit is a
regional party protecting the interest of the state. He stressed the need for autonomy of states, as spelled out in the MNS's blueprint for Maharashtra’s development. He said, “National parties should focus on Lok Sabha elections and leave state elections to regional parties. Henceforth the MNS will not contest the Lok Sabha elections. When I say
autonomous status, I am not talking about independence. State issues can be dealt with by the state governments while inter-state matters should be left to the Centre.” He continued, “When he was the Gujarat chief minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talked about states becoming self-sufficient if they could retain the taxes
they collected. I am not saying state taxes should not be given to the Centre. I am just saying the work which can be done at the state level should be done without the Centre’s interference. For instance, maintenance of old forts in the state needs Centre’s approvals and funds, which need not be the case.” When asked why he was criticising the Prime Minister Modi now when he had sup-
ported him before the Lok Sabha polls, Raj said, “Rather than criticism, you can say I am feeling sad that he had not changed his stand after becoming the Prime Minister. As the Chief Minister he had every right to speak about Gujarat. But now he should have changed. I have not changed my opinion of him.” “The poor performance of my party in the Lok Sabha
polls was a a good reality check and I had put the defeat behind. I lacked the conviction while campaigning then. Now I have it,” he clarified. Raj also criticised Modi for being busy campaigning for state elections when tension prevailed on the border. However he said it would be too early to judge the Prime Minister’s performance just now, as he has been elected for five years.
PIL seeks disclosure of assets by Thackerays, other leaders
A public interest litigation filed in the Bombay High Court has sought a direction to the Election Commission to ask Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, his son Aditya and MNS chief Raj Thackeray to disclose their assets in affidavits. Petitioner Sriprakash Neel is the editor of a Thane-based daily, reports PTI. Uddhav, his son or Raj are not contesting the assembly elections in Maharashtra but the PIL says they field candidates so they themselves should also file affidavits disclosing their assets, etc. The PIL, which will come up for hearing in due course, only names Thackerays but it says that leaders of all political parties should disclose their assets, criminal cases filed against them, their liabilities, etc., before the elections. The people need to know not only about the candidates but also about the leaders of political parties who field them it says.
Assembly poll campaigning ends
Poll will test mettle of four major parties By A Special Correspondent
I
ts turn of the voter as the high-octane campaign for the state Assembly election ended on Monday evening. Now all eyes are steered on who will breast the tape against the backdrop of the five-cornered contest for the 288-member House. With long-standing political alliances crumbling virtually on the eve of the filing the nomination, the poll will test the mettle of four major parties – viz. Congress, NCP, BJP and Shiv Sena individually, with Raj Thackeray's MNS
trying to emerge as the X factor in the keenly watched contest. As in Lok Sabha poll five months ago, the Assembly election in Maharashtra is about Narendra Modi, who sought to unleash his personal charisma, carpetbombing the state with a slew of rallies, evoking criticism from rivals but thrusting forward BJP as prime contender for power in the state for the first time without the crutches of former saffron ally Shiv Sena. Modi launched himself into Maharashtra's electoral
arena with a vengeance, addressing 27 rallies, rare by a Prime Minister in a state Assembly election, in the absence of a BJP leader with pan-Maharashtra appeal, following the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde in a car crash soon after Lok Sabha poll. During his campaign blitzkrieg, Modi focused on berating Congress and NCP for colossal corruption leading to state's ruin while showcasing Gujarat's development under him. Uddhav Thackeray also prominently raised the issue
of Marathi pride and alleged move to divide Maharashtra. Though Modi trashed accusations of BJP mulling creation of Vidarbha state if the party was voted to power, the Shiv Sena leader ensured it remained positioned prominently in the electoral discourse to seek polarisation of Marathi votes in other regions of the state. Farmers' suicide, particularly in the Vidarbha region, was another topic Modi repeatedly harped on at his rallies. Guns booming on the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir after repeated
ceasefire violations by Pakistan also resonated in Maharashtra's electoral arena. Modi, facing flak for addressing a rush of poll rallies amid mounting tension on the border, tried to arouse nationalistic fervour in favour of his party by asserting that the enemy has been taught a befitting lesson. However, despite his claim of the jawans shutting enemy's mouth, the absentee Prime Minister continued to be targeted by the rivals, including Uddhav, Congress Vice- President Rahul Gandhi and NCP boss Sharad Pawar.
Modi also faced flak from Raj Thackeray, a self-confessed former admirer, over ceasefire violations. Drubbed in Lok Sabha poll, Raj also appeared going soft on estranged cousin Uddhav when he attacked BJP for breaking the saffron alliance. He created a flutter in the midst of electioneering by revealing that he had sought to forge an alliance with Shiv Sena after it split with BJP but there was no response from the other side, triggering speculation about a post-poll coming together of the estranged cousins.

Discussion likely to take place in a meeting called by Union health minister with Agriculture and Commerce ministers

A
s livelihood of farmers cultivating tobacco has always been a question whenever talks of tobacco control measures are initiated, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has recently written a letter to Agriculture and Commerce Ministers for a joint meeting on October 29 to discuss the issue of alternative crops, as an initiative to see to it that interests of the tobacco-cultivating farmers are protected.
The letter states that although the Government of India has ratified World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and is committed to implement effective strategies for tobacco control in the country and as per Article 17 of FCTC, there have to be provisions of support for economically viable alternative activities. Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV), which is an initiative led by victims to sensitise law and policy makers about the dangers of extensive to-
bacco usage, tobacco industry activities, lack of stringent action against tobacco companies and growing plight of victims across the country and is run by Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Healis – Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, Navi Mumbai, applauds this move from the government. Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, a senior cancer surgeon from Tata Memorial Hospital at Parel in Mumbai who is also involved with VoTV said, “In India, around one million new cancer cases are diagnosed and around
Panvel-Karjat track doubling awaits approval By A Staff Reporter
T
he proposed double-laning of the track between Panvel and Karjat which was approved by the Maharashtra government in June is still waiting for a nod from the Indian Railways. Currently a single track of 28.15 km connects Panvel with Karjat. The stations which connect Panvel to Karjat are Chikale, Mohape and Chowk. It is used by trains like the Pune-Ernakulam and Pune-Bhusawal express, with many of them halting at Chikhale to fill fuel.
Prabhat A Ranjan, chief operations manager, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), said, “The Panvel-Karjat lane has not yet been sanctioned by the railway board. We are waiting for a written document from the board and state government. Once we receive it we will start the plan of action. We are keen on building the corridor as it will provide relief to commuters, but there is no certain time for when the process will begin.” An MRVC official, said, “The initial baseline survey which will be conducted by the NGO Spark will
take place only after the Indian Railways gives the nod and the report will be submitted to the MMRDA. The project will become too costly to construct in a few years. The construction should commence soon.” The doubling of the Karjat-Panvel route will cost Rs 1,473 crore and the cost will increase in the coming years. It will also become a way for suburban services between Kalyan and Panvel. The current distance between CST and Karjat via Kalyan is 100 km, which will reduce the distance to 77 km once the project is completed.

Prashant Sapkale, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of H/West ward, said, “From our end we had prepared a report regarding the alterations, but the necessary steps were not taken by the builder. The licence of that restaurant has been cancelled and that restaurant will not be allowed to carry on any work now.” The officer also added, “There were no casualties as the fire broke out early in the morning when there was no one in the building.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Pope Francis given surprise lecture on sexual intimacy
It probably wasn’t what the Pope was expecting from his Vatican gathering last Monday – a lesson on the importance of sex in a marriage. Australian couple, Ron and Mavis Pirola, were asked to talk about what makes a marriage last. In front of 200 prelates, they explained that sex is crucial for a successful relationship. They have been married for 55 years. “They said that they gradually came to see that the only feature Pope Francis that distinguishes their sacramental relationship from that of any other good Christ-centred relationship is sexual intimacy, and that marriage is a sexual sacrament with its fullest expression in sexual intercourse.” The congregation of celibate men were a little bemused by the admission. A British cardinal sheepishly said that that's not usually what bishops talk about mostly. The meeting was organised by the Pope to work out how to make Catholic teaching on issues such as marriage, divorce, homosexuality and sex more relevant to the church today.

Kripa is bookies’ favourite in Kalina constituency

W
ith state Assembly elections not more than 24 hours away, bookies have opened their final rates for the Kalina constituency where the highest number of candidates are in the poll fray. The bookies have chosen Congress candidate Kripashankar Singh as the winner for the constituency with BJP candidate Amarjit Singh as the runner-up. According to a group of bookies, “The Kalina Con-
stituency is a major constituency where all the bigwigs from all major political parties are in the fray like former BEST Chairman and Shiv Sena candidate Sanjay Potnis, NCP state spokesperson Nawab Malik's younger brother Abdul Rashid (Kaptan) Malik and three-time sitting MLA and one time MLC Kripashankar Singh.” As per this week's rate, it is 40 paisa for Kripashankar Singh which means he is in number one position in the bookies record,
Kripashankar Singh, Congress candidate from Kalina.
BJP candidate Amarjit Sinhg is second with 1.32 paisa, NCP candidate Kaptan Malik is at the third position with 1.89 paisa and Shiv Sena candidate Sanjay Potinis has 2.34 paisa. When asked about the reason for Congress to be in the first position, they said, “Everyone knows that from the very beginning this ward has been Congress'. But after the alliance broke up, voters have been divided and indirectly the Marathi voters in this constituency will vote for Congress.”
“I
f voted to power, the BJP along with the RSS will definitely show its real fascist face. But we are confident that the electorate have seen through this evil design and will defeat such communal forces,” said former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan while addressing an election campaign rally in the Muslim-dominated Naya Nagar area in Mira Road on Sunday night. Chavhan was seeking votes for Congress candidates – Yakub Qureshi (MiraBhayandar) and Prabhat Patil (Ovala-Majiwada). “Owing to their extortionist rule and goondaism, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance had been kicked out of power in 1999 and it took us 15 years to put Maharashtra back on the
road to economic stability and development,” Chavan said. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lowering the standard of political discourse, Chahan said that Modi instead of talking about his administrative vision had been concentrating more on politics. Speaking on the development plank, Chavan said that his government has not only extended financial assistance to local self-governing bodies, but has also initiated various projects including the Metro, Monorail and Eastern Freeway. Moreover decks have been cleared for pumping in Rs 11,500 crore to boost industries which will open ample opportunities of employment in the state. MLC Muzaffar Hussain, Sanjay Dutt were present at the rally.

Liquor seizure in poll season shoots up By Suresh Golani
W
ith elections just round the corner, accompanied by a spell of dry days, the Konkan division of the State Excise department has intensified vigil on illegal trafficking of liquor in the region. So far the special flying squads seized country booze and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth more than Rs 8.42 lakh including
the vehicles used for transportation. While around 179 cases under the relevant sections of the Excise Act have been registered, 106 people including notorious bootleggers have been arrested in this context. The increase in such smuggling activities is being attributed to the election period, when politicians are known to dole out cash and distribute liquor to party workers and voters.

Suspicion and bias against the Sikhs T

Ponder awhile... “Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the impossible, and demanding it at gunpoint.” — Christopher Hitchens
ISIS’ Kashmir mission T
HE Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has made it known that it has a global Islamic mission. It is possible that it has begun to carry out secret operations in some nations. It is a terrorist movement. There is cause for grave concern that at a rally in Kashmir, ISIS flags were waved. How did those flags come there? How is it there was no objection to the waving of the flag at the rally? Were some of the members of the rally involved in the terrorist movement? The police are inquiring into the incident. It is necessary to find out the nature and extent of ISIS presence in Kashmir. It is also necessary to find out who is supporting them. Organisations like the Hurriyat Conference will welcome support from domestic or international groups in its fight against India. It is also possible that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is monitoring the activities of the ISIS in Kashmir. Years ago the presence of pro-Pakistani elements were discovered at a cricket match between India and Pakistan in Srinagar. Some spectators cheered Pakistan players and when at that match India was defeated, they rejoiced. The ISIS flag could not have come from nowhere. A thorough inquiry is called for. It looks like the ISIS is a formidable enemy.

HE Sikhs are a small, sturdy community in India. Since it is limited in size it is very protective about its identity. It often over reacts but that is the sign of its assertion that it does not want to be taken cursorily. Punjab, the community’s home state, has witnessed many morchas (movements) of the Sikhs. But if one were to probe every movement of theirs, one would infer that its search for identity had propelled the community to defy the authorities. Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal has said that he will take up Sikh 'black list' with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to conclude the cases against them and to secure the release of Sikh 'convicts' who had served the sentence awarded to them.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2014
now. This was true till 1990 when as India’s High Commissioner I scrapped the list with the help of officials from the Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau whom I invited to London. The officers spent one week in London and practically scrapped the list. I recall scrapping the list of hundred-odd Sikhs who were on the list, merely because they had raised the slogan of Khalistan in the front of India’s High Commission at London. The front gate was closed on June, 1984 following operation Blue Star, when the army entered the Golden temple at Amritsar. A
Operation Blue Star No one will take exception to that. But one would think that the point which was settled in 1990 was being unnecessarily raised. I mean the demonstrations by the Sikhs abroad against the Operation Blue Star which led to the entry of Indian armed forces in the Golden Temple, the Sikhs' Vatican. Some other methods should have been adopted to flush out the militants from the Akal Takht, the Sikhs’ highest authority. Sending forces inside the temple was a wrong step. And even though the government has apologized for it but that does not condone the mistake. Some heads should have rolled at the political as well as the administrative level. But since the top Congress leaders were involved in ordering the armed forces to go inside the temple, none was punished. Even the official reports on the subject are biased and one sided. Badal has raised the question of 'Sikh list' to tell the community that when it comes to the question of justice to the Sikhs, only a Sikh can help them. This is unfair and the purpose is to garner the Sikh vote. Badal heading the Akali Dal is understandably placating the Sikh community. But in the process, he is polarizing the society, neither in the interest of Sikhs nor that of Punjabis. I do not think that there is any 'Sikh list'
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar British policeman stood guard outside while an Indian Security man responded from within to whoever rang the bell, by opening a little window in the gate and sizing up the caller. The turbaned ones were often asked to come by the back door and not necessarily treated well. I do now know how digging the past serves any purpose except that the matter gets more tangled and more communalized. There is enough of bad blood between the two communities – Hindus and Sikhs. The effort should be how to oust the poison that has got injected into the blood of the two communities. It is a pity that very little effort is being made these days in this field. In the late eighties, there was a Punjab group, headed by Inder Kumar Gujral before he joined the government, to make concerted efforts to bring the two communities closer. In fact when Gujral offered me the assign-
ment at London, he said that he was keen to fill the cleavage that had developed between Hindus and Sikhs following after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. I had never been part of official diplomacy because I was an active journalist. But when he said that I could do something to bring the two communities together, I thought that I should try to do whatever I could do in this direction.
High Commissioner Therefore when I occupied the position of High Commissioner, my job was to explain that New Delhi was prepared to transfer all subjects to the state except the three. And the impression about New Delhi against the Sikh community was not correct. It did not trust me because there was no love lost between the High Commission and the Sikh community. When I became the High Commissioner, I found to my horror that the Sikh were not allowed to enter the building premises through the main door. The security man would see through the aperture at the main door whether the entrance was a Sikh or not. If he was, he was asked to come through the back door. The explanation given by the Commission’s official was that they did not want the terrorist to enter the building. When I asked that it was not written on anybody’s face whether he was terrorist or not, the reply was that the Sikhs could not be trusted because many among them were militants and supporters of the Khalistan demand. I ordered the opening of the gates straightaway. Pat came the protest by the committee of secretaries to the Government of India that I would be personally responsible if anything happened to the staff. Nothing happened after the opening of the gate. It was a bogey which the biased officials had created against the Sikhs Community in the UK. The problem is not as simple as Badal's 'Sikh list'. Both communities have to find the reason for suspicion and bias. Its removal will serve the purpose, not any particular list.
What is the way to become innocent? B
ELOVED Master, What is Innocence and What is the way to become Innocent? Osho: Sonja, innocence is your very nature. You do not have to become it, you are already it. You are born innocent. Then layers and layers of conditioning are imposed upon your innocence. Your innocence is like a mirror and conditioning is like layers of dust. The mirror has not to be achieved, the mirror is already there -- or rather, here. The mirror is not lost, it is only hidden behind the layers of dust. You don't have to follow a way to reach your nature because you cannot leave your nature, you cannot go anywhere else. Even if you wanted to, it is impossible. That's exactly the definition of nature: nature means that which cannot be left behind, that which cannot be renounced. But you can forget about it. You cannot lose it but it can be forgotten. And that's exactly what has happened. The mirror is not lost but forgotten -- forgotten because it is not functioning anymore as a mirror. Not that any defect has arisen in it,
just layers of dust are covering it. All that is needed is to clean it, to remove those layers of dust. The process of becoming innocent is not really a process of becoming, it is a process of discovering your being. It is a discovery, not an achievement. You don't attain to something new, you simply attain to that
MATTER & SPIRIT which you have always been. It is a forgotten language. It happens many times: you see a person on the road, you recognize him, his face seems familiar. Suddenly you remember also that you know his name. You say, "It is just on the tip of my tongue," but still it is not coming to you. What is happening? If it is just on the tip of your tongue, then why can't you say it? You know that you know it, but still you are not able to remember it. And the more you try, the more diffi-
cult it becomes, because making an effort makes you more tense, and when you are tense you are farther away from your nature, you are farther away from that which is already there. When you are relaxed you are closer; when you are utterly relaxed, it will surface of its own accord. So you try hard, but it doesn't come, so you forget all about it. Then lying down in your bath, or just swimming in the pool, and you are not even trying to remember that man's name when suddenly it bubbles up. What has happened? You were not trying to remember, and you were relaxed. When you are relaxed you are wide, when you are tense you become narrow -- the more tense, the more narrow. The passage between you and that which is inside you becomes so narrow that nothing can pass through it, not even a single name. All the great scientific discoveries have been made in this very mysterious way -- in this very UNscientific way, so to speak. — Osho

THE Assembly elections are tomorrow and I would like to advice the people of Mumbai to vote for the right candidate. Narendra Modi has done nothing much for the country. Ever since he became the prime minister of the country, he has only gone on foreign tours – Pakistan, China, Japan, America, etc. None of his promises that he had made at the time of elections have been fulfilled to date. While the common man is suffering, he and his cronies keep travelling by airplane to foreign lands on the common man’s hard-earned money which they pay as taxes to the government every month. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili
ON the same lines of 'Transform India', state level politics in Maharashtra is also providing a base and a platform to give inputs on what is needed in Maharashtra to improve urban daily life and local governance. All inputs submitted are reviewed and utilised to develop a foolproof manifesto for the upcoming state elections by all the contesting parties. State elections would enable citizens to participate in governance and track the performance of the elected government against the manifesto. We look for pothole free roads, water, sanitation, fight against corruption, safety of women, good transport facility, medical facility and also a stable government as in the Centre. Local regional parties are also trying hard to comeback to power. Vote bank politics should not play spoilsport. Chief Ministerial candidates are working hard to make the dream of the party come true. At the outset as the citizens of

She herself called for it. It may be recalled that for 18 years she dragged on this case presuming that some LETTER OF one in Delhi would help THE DAY her. It is because of the intervention of the Supreme Court that the case has come to an end, at least for the time being. It may be noted that Amit Shah, whose case is also transferred to Maharashtra, is also playing the same game of Jayalalithaa – dragging endlessly. With due respect, it should be observed that the courts

A couple of pre-poll surveys about the Maha elections have thrown up some interesting possibilities. If the actual picture that emerges on October 19 largely conforms to these findings of the psephologists, then the people of the state would be in for a surprise. Even though all these surveys have unanimously shown the BJP as becoming the largest single party, the total of the other three major contenders, viz SS, Cong and NCP comes tantalizingly close or even crosses, the halfway mark of 144. Due to the severe acrimony the SS is nurturing towards the BJP, Uddhav may throw his lot behind the Cong-NCP combine; with the MNS extending n outside support. And, in order to defeat the 'secular' forces, the NCP may even go to the extent of an outright merger with its parent party. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali
are very lenient to the high and mighty. If it were the cases of helpless and poor, the accused would have been in jail long back. But, now, the people have the satisfaction that, at last, at least, justice has been done. People hope, the days are not long when Amit Shah would be in the same position. Jayalalithaa is the first serving, rather reigning, politician who had to go to jail because of corruption. Wish this should have happened many years ago. Hudhud strikes WITH the available information through satellite of an impending danger of a cyclonic storm Hudhud, the AP state government and the Centre made elaborate arrangements to curtail the loss of life and property. Making all the advanced arrangements, which includes shifting people from coastal areas, the government did a good job. However, all the efforts did not yield much relief as normal life was thrown completely out of gear as winds with a speed of 170 to 180 kmph battered Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts and there were fatal deaths due to severity of the wind along with rain. Lakhs of people were evacuated from towns and villages through which the cyclone passed amid massive rain and wind. The cyclone is similar to last year's Phailin that crossed the Odisha coast.
POLL DANCE: As we are barely five days away from witnessing the next Maharashtra government, tomorrow is the day to participate in its formation. AT an election rally in Maharashtra, the Congress president has reportedly criticised the Shiv Sena and the BJP as the parties which are only interested in chasing power. By logically extending this argument, one can very well ask the Congress chief as to what is the purpose of her party entering the poll arena? Is it contesting the elections just for the purpose of conducting a stereotype democratic exercise? If able to secure a majority of its own, or in collaboration with like-minded parties, will the Congress not stake its claim to continue to occupy the Mantralaya's sixth floor for a record fourth successive term?
AS per the prevailing wisdom in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), it will form the next government in Maharashtra on its own. It was out of this belief that the seat-sharing talks with the Shiv Sena got protracted, until the BJP decided to go solo in the October 15 Assembly elections. And now a pre-poll survey by the India Today Group and Cicero supports that belief. The BJP is set to emerge as the single largest party in the Maharashtra Assembly elections by bagging anything between 125 and 141 seats, while the Congress is projected to be heading for a rout. TRULY the ensuing polls to the Maharashtra state has been reduced to a Maha drama by political parties. Stirring wild feelings of irrationality and jingoism has been the modus operandi of most parties. No one seems to concerned about the people of the second largest state in India. Have the politicians who are busy working out pre and post poll permutations and combinations given a thought on how to make life easier for railway commuters who travel daily in sub-human conditions? lmost a month after a Mumbai-based NGO, Saidham Charitable Trust, moved the Supreme Court with the petition seeking direction to the Central and Maharashtra governments to ensure that the idols of Sri Sai Baba were not illegally removed from any temple across the country, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the petition. The petition filed by Saidham had claimed that the idols of Sri Sai Baba should not be illegally removed from any temple across the country and his devotees should not be interfered, obstructed or hindered from carrying
out their worship as urged by Dwarka Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. Of the 11 prayers made by the trust, one sought to restrain the media from telecasting, broadcasting and publishing anything that is insulting or defamatory to Sai Baba of Shirdi and hurts the sentiments of his devotees. It sought action against all those who are running a campaign defamatory to Sai Baba, and sought direction for the restoration of his idols from wherever they have been removed. While hearing the petition, the bench headed by Justice T S Thakur said that it was a matter of faith and could not be judicially managed and reminded the petitioner that law and order was a state
subject. Making it clear that it would not entertain the NGO’s plea, the court allowed it to withdraw the petition, saying that it is dismissed as withdrawn. It also said that petitioner trust could avail the legal remedies available to it.Senior counsel C A Sundaram representing the Trust told the court the call to remove Sai Baba’s idols was akin to a ‘fatwa’. Reacting to this, the court said, “Anyone who interferes with the law will have to face its consequences, including those inciting crime. Certainly law will help you. We ask the trust to explore the legal remedies available to it.” An official from the Trust, who spoke to the ADC on the condition of anonymity said, “We haven't decided about our new plan of action. However, we will seek help from whoever comes to power in the new government in Maharashtra soon.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

>> Confused about poaching and what you’ll need for it? Our article will come in handy!
Poached No, we’re not asking you to hunt or capture wild animals illegally! Poaching is also a cooking method, and is a great way to keep your fruits, vegetables, meat and fish healthy. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry tell you more
H
ave you ever tried making Eggs Benedict? The breakfast special consists of poached eggs on top of an English muffin, traditionally topped with ham and bacon or slivers of salmon and Hollandaise sauce. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? That is of course — till you get down to poaching the egg. Poaching is a method of cooking that people usually ignore because they don’t think it’s as appetising as other methods, and much more troublesome to get the hang of. However, once you make the perfect poached egg (see our box for tips) you will be able to poach absolutely anything else without trouble. Take a look at why poaching is so healthy and read our tips and tricks to get the hang of it.
Benefits of Poaching If you aren’t entirely convinced about incorporating poached items into your dishes, take a look at some of the key benefits of poaching. n fat free: Since every teaspoon of oil or butter you use adds around a 100 calories to your meal, there’s no doubt that poaching is a healthier cooking technique when compared to roasting or sauteeing, simply because it requires no fat. Even if you restrict the intake of fat in your daily diet, poaching doesn’t usually require any oil or butter to get you started, making it a great cooking technique, especially if you are aiming to lose weight. n Prevents oxidisation: When you cook food, especially meat and eggs, the cholesterol

content in them is oxidised. When oxidised cholesterol enters your body, it increases your risk of heart disease significantly. However, when you poach any food, it stays submerged under water and doesn’t come in contact with oxygen, thereby restricting the cholesterol from getting oxidised. n toxin free: Techniques such as stir-frying or roasting require high temperatures to be carried out successfully, as well as to achieve the right texture and taste. However, when food is cooked at such high temperatures, both the ingredients, as well as the utensils they are being cooked in produce toxins, which you eventually ingest. Poaching is carried out at a relatively lower temperature, which significantly reduces your risk of consuming toxins .
tyPes of Poaching n shallow poaching: This method involves transferring the heat from the pan to the liquid and then to the food. So, nothing is submerged for too long. If you’ve got tender meat or fish, this is a great method to use. Do it yourself: All you have to do is grease the sides of your pan (you can use butter for great flavour, but use oil if you want to cook healthy) and fill it with a little liquid, just below boiling point. Salt your meat or fish, add it to the pan and cover it until it’s cooked properly. If you want, you can flavour the rest of the water (which will be much less than deep poaching) and use it as a thick sauce.

Poaching is healthy! If you are looking for a healthier cooking technique, don’t shy away from giving poaching a try! Since the technique involves slowly cooking food in a flavourful broth, it completely eliminates the use of any form of fat. Other healthy cooking techniques such as roasting, use dry heat to cook food, which causes nutrients to evaporate and the food to dry out. Poaching, on the other hand, uses a broth, thereby injecting the goodness of the spices and herbs that you are using to flavour your vegetables and meat with. In a nutshell, poaching helps trap flavour, moisture and nutrients in the pan itself, making it an easy, convenient and flavourful way to prepare your

meals. Nutritionist Suman Agarwal tells us, “Poaching is a great way to cook fruits that disintegrate easily, while enhancing their nutrient content and flavour. At the same time, it is extremely low in fat, making it the perfect technique to cook with.” However, if you are looking to incorporate poached eggs in your healthy diet, ensure that you poach them whole. “While egg whites are healthy, the yolk contains fat that your body actually requires. If you eliminate all sources of fat, you are likely to suffer from hormonal imbalance and a host of hair and skin problems. In fact, your body needs this fat to absorb essential vitamins,” Suman adds.

What is poaching Confused about what we’re talking about? If you don’t already know, poaching is a cooking technique where the produce is submerged in liquid. The liquid used is usually water, but it can also be milk, stock and in some cases (fruits mostly) wine! It’s a method of moist heat cooking, where you use a very low temperature to delicately cook food without drying it out. >> Poached pears and salmon (inset) feature in some of the most delicious recipes
n deep poaching: This method is best suited to ingredients such as eggs. You need to submerge the food in a deep pot, and cover it with a tight fitting lid. Do it yourself: Add water to a deep pan and season it with salt. It should be heated just below boiling point. Add the food to the liquid and cook it, uncovered. Don’t let the water boil and remove the food item the minute it’s been cooked to avoid overcooking.
hoW to poach perfectly n Remember to keep the heat low and make sure that the food is in water only for a minimum amount of time, to preserve the flavour. n Try whisking the water before sliding in your food item, as this can help poach to perfection. This works particularly well for eggs, which are the hardest to poach. n If you’re having trouble poaching an egg, a clever trick is to use cling film to help hold its shape. Grease cling film, line a
bowl with it and break an egg into it. Hold it up like a plastic bag, put it in the water (while holding it) till it is cooked and then quickly dunk it in ice water. It won’t look like a poached egg, but it will taste delicious. n Remember to use extremely fresh ingredients, especially when it comes to eggs, because if they’re old, they won’t hold shape or cook properly. If you’re poaching in advance, immediately dunk the poached item in a bowl of iced water when it’s done as mentioned above. Otherwise it will continue to cook!
poaching recipes While poaching eggs is de rigueur, there is a lot more you can poach! Take a look at some of our easy-to-make recipes. >> While poaching chicken, pay close attention to the temperature of the water
Wine poached pears This dessert is easy to make, fuss-free and tastes delicious. Besides, it uses red wine, which comes with its own set of health benefits — when you consume it in limited quantities, of course. to make: Bring one bottle of wine to a simmer and add 1½ cup of sugar, 4 sticks of cinnamon and one vanilla pod to it. Peel 5-6 pears and add them to the wine. Simmer them for about 30 minutes, or until they are tender. Remove the pears and reduce the wine on a high flame, until it forms a syrup. Now, spoon the syrup over the pears and serve.
simple poached salmon Clean, light and refreshing — the flavours of this easy-to-cook salmon dish are spectacular and the dish is perfect for a light lunch. to make: For the poaching broth, combine a stick of chopped celery, 2 roughly chopped carrots, 1 halved onion, 1 thinly sliced lemon with 6 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add salt and pepper to taste, turn the heat down to a simmer and cook the broth for 810 minutes. Then, add 4 boneless fillets of salmon to the poaching liquid and cook them gently, for 5-7 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fillet), until the fish is fully opaque. Remove the fillets and serve them with a sprinkling of paprika and dill and a crunchy side salad.

foods you can poach While eggs are the most common food to poach, you can poach several fruits as well. They taste delicious and soft, without being devoid of flavour since poaching is too light to suck out their moisture or nutrients. Fruits such as apples, pears, figs and oranges poach best. When it comes to
food, fish such as salmon is the best seafood to poach, but you can also poach chicken — even whole chickens! Although, when you’re poaching a larger cut, your water temperature needs to be very well regulated. You can poach any type of vegetable as well!
A flavourful broth accompanies this fiery, delicious poached chicken. to make:Start off by combining 3½ cups of chicken broth, 2 sliced carrots, 5 chopped spring onions, 4 cloves of smashed garlic, 1 inch of fresh ginger, ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup soy sauce, 3 cinnamon sticks, 5 star anise, 6 peppercorns and salt (to taste). Bring the broth to a boil and then cover it and simmer for 20 minutes. Then, add ¼ cup dry sherry and 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts to the broth. Cook the chicken breasts on a moderately low heat until they are fully cooked through (8-10 minutes). Then, remove the chicken with a slotted spoon, slice it and spoon over the carrots and the broth before serving hot.
getting eggy Making the perfect poached egg is not as easy as you think it is — a lot can go wrong! If you’ve read our tips already, we suggest you get started with this, easy do-it-yourself, recipe. you will need: 1 large egg (extremely fresh, if it’s organic it will be easier to poach), 1 drop of vinegar (you can use malt, but white wine vinegar is best. This is optional), a medium saucepan and a pinch of salt. What to do: Half fill the saucepan with water. Bring it to a boil and add salt. Crack the egg into a bowl with vinegar, but make sure that you don’t break the yolk. Whisk the water while it’s boiling and slip the egg into the centre. Then immediately (this has to be done very quickly!) turn the heat low. Cook it for exactly three minutes — any more or any less, and your egg will not be cooked well — and serve immediately.

as buzzed as a bee!
INCLUDE IT IN YOUR DIET
The best way to eat bee pollen is with a piece of fresh fruit, because the fruit’s fibres reinforce the goodness of the pollen, making it doubly good. You can also sprinkle it over salads, add it to smoothies or simply mix it with some yoghurt for a fresh, light and refreshing snack.
You might not be able to fly like one, but if you incorporate bee pollen into your diet, you’re definitely going to experience a health surge. Shirley Mistry tells you more
B
ee pollen is produced by honey bees and also acts as food for young bees. It turns out that bee pollen is not only healthy for young bees, it is also extremely healthy for us! It contains several nutrients and is packed with amino acids, vitamins and folic acid. Bee pollen is considered to be richer in protein compared to the protein that is obtained from eating meat. About 40% of bee pollen is made of protein, and it has a higher percentage of amino acids as compared to eggs, cheese or meat. And, if you are worried that the bees or their hives may be harmed while the pollen is extracted, rest assured that they aren’t. Take a look at some of the benefits that these tiny pellets provide. n Helps with infertility: If you have been trying unsuccessfully to conceive, give bee pollen a chance. It helps improve and restore ovarian functions and can help raise your chances of getting pregnant. It also acts as an aphrodisiac and gives your hormones a boost. n Aids digestion: Apart from containing several nutrients, bee pollen also contains enzymes that make the process of digestion easier. It also helps your body absorb nutrients more efficiently. n Eliminate allergies: Bee pollen reduces the effects of histamine, and so, helps you combat several allergies. It relives a range of allergy symptoms including a stuffy nose, asthma and sinus. Consuming

n
pollen has been shown to relieve allergy symptoms completely, especially among those who suffer from asthma. Treats addictions: We were a little surprised to learn about this benefit, but bee pollen helps suppress cravings, thereby curbing the urge to cave into an addiction. Whether it’s food cravings or substance abuse, regularly consuming bee pollen can help get rid of a bad habit. Healthy heart: Apart from the boatload of nutrients that bee pollen contains, it also has a substance called rutin, which strengthens your capillaries and blood vessels, stabilises your cholesterol levels and promotes blood circulation. Its anticlogging properties are considered to be beneficial when it comes to preventing a heart attack or a stroke. Skin safe: Bee pollen is also a great topical remedy and helps to treat skin problems. Conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can be cured completely by applying bee pollen to the affected area, as the amino acids and essential vitamins in it soothe your skin and promote regeneration of cells. Power packed: Give energy bars a break and eat a little bee pollen when you are feeling exhausted and need a pick-me-up. The carbohydrates, protein and vitamins that are present in bee pollen help boost your stamina and keep lethargy at bay.

« Know more: Fasting reboots your immune system
Intermittent fasting has been in the spotlight, with researchers and scientists giving it increasing attention. Dev Goswami tells you about a new study the health benefits of fasting
W
e’re sure you know that fasting for a short period of time can help detoxify your body and improve metabolism — provided you do it right. However, at the same time, nutritionists often trash diets that promote fasting, calling them unhealthy and dangerous. But, in a new study, with what is being termed as ‘remarkable’ findings, researchers have discovered that fasting for two-three days can regenerate your immune system and help promote longevity, as your body will be in a better condition to fight infections.
ThE ImpLICaTIONs
ThE sTUDY
The study was a mix of animal and human trials — it was conducted on mice and also featured a phase 1 (testing on a small group of people for the first time) human trial, which involved patients receiving chemotherapy. Scientists have discovered that fasting ‘flips a regenerative switch’ in your body, which prompts your stem cells to create new white blood cells. Valter Longo, professor of gerontology and the biological sciences at the University of California (where the study took place), explained “We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-
based regeneration of the hematopoietic system. When you starve, your system tries to save energy, and one of the ways it can do this is by recycling several immune cells that are not necessary, especially those that may be damaged.” Once you start fasting, your white blood cells start getting depleted, and this depletion prompts your stem cells to create new immune system cells, which means that you end up with a new immune system. The researchers also discovered that fasting reduces an enzyme called PKA (Protein kinase A). Researchers suggest that this reduction was essential, as PKA is a gene that needs to shut down in order for your stem cells to go into regenerative mode.
>> According to a new study, fasting is good for your immune system
The benefits of having a new immune system are quite obvious. Specifically, the study showed that fasting can help patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. The treatment, while helping save lives, damages the immune system. So, the findings of this study might help pave a way to decrease the negative impact of chemotherapy on the immune system. Researchers are currently investigating whether fasting can have similar effects on other organs of the body as well. It must also be noted that this study cannot be taken as the basis on which you go on a fast. The findings need further research and so, aren’t applicable to the real world just yet.

stimulate your brain n The toughest solution: We’re sure that like every one else, you look for the simplest way to do certain things, whether it’s at work or at home. But, once your brain is used to performing simple tasks, it starts looking for something more challenging. Pain, Pain,
With the launch of iOS 8, iPhone and iPad users can now use Health — an application that aims to cater to all your health requirements, says Shirley Mistry
I
f you have recently updated your Apple device to iOS 8 and are puzzled by what the in-built Health application actually does, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Since the application resembles a blank slate when you first open it, take a look at our guide to find out what it does, in order to get the most use out of it.
BasiC feaTures
While the Health application doesn’t actually make you healthier or fitter, it can give you an overview of your health and fitness levels. Once you grant access to third-party fitness applications such as the 7-Minute Workout, WebMD, MapMyRun, Motion 24/7 Sleeptracker and MyFitnessPal, the data that these applications individually collect, can be viewed as a comprehensive, collated chart in the Health application. The dashboard section of the Health application will display your blood glucose levels, body measurements, calorie intake and sleeping patterns, all gathered by various health-based applications, in the form of a graph. You can view your daily vitals or opt for weekly, monthly and yearly reviews. You can also share these statistics with your healthcare providers and back them up, so that you don’t lose any important information.

Knee pain, which can be a big hindrance, is a common complaint, irrespective of whether you work out or not. Dev Goswami explains the causes and factors behind knee pain and tells you what you can do about it
E
>> You can monitor your blood glucose level with Apple’s health application In a nutshell, the Health application will integrate all your health-related data and give you a single report, so that you don’t have to switch between several applications to try and make sense of it. The Dashboard section allows you to pin what kind of data you would like to look at in the easy-to-read graphs. The Health Data tab, on the other hand, is a bank of the various health and fitness fields that you can choose from while building your dashboard, while the Sources tab provides you with a list of the applications that are currently linked to your Health application. The Medical ID is the fourth and last tab, and seems like the most useful feature, simply because until more third-party applications are synced with the Health application, there is not much that you can do. However, the Medical ID is an overview of your medical conditions, and displays your photo, blood type, an allergy list and an option to enter multiple emergency contacts. Once filled, you can access this card from your phone/ tablet’s lock screen itself. Simply click on the ‘Emergency’ button on your passcode screen and then choose the Medical ID option, located on the bottom left corner of your screen. This comprehensive, yet concise Medical ID is aimed at providing crucial information during an emergency and is, in our opinion, the most nifty feature of this application at this point.
ven if you have never suffered from knee pain, we’re sure that you know of at least one or two people who have been affected by it. Knee pain is a common problem, and it’s not just the elderly who experience it. Dr. Anjana Laungani, consultant physiotherapist and rehab specialist, from Physio Rehab, explains, “With increasing awareness about fitness and the benefits of sports, knee pain is now a common complaint amongst young adults as well as children who are as young as 10-years-old.” And, it is not only caused by over-exercising. Knee pain can also occur if you wear improper footwear, walk or jog on uneven surfaces, or have a lack of lower-body exercises. If you are wondering why you’re so prone to knee pain, we asked Dr. Anjana to explain the bio-mechanics of this important joint, as well as what you can do to prevent injury.
The sTruCTure When it comes to lower body actions such as walking or running, three of your body’s muscles/ joints play the most important role — your feet, your knees and your hips. Your knee is the joint that connects your leg muscles to your hip muscles. To perform any activity safely, it is important for the impact or force of your movement to travel progressively from your foot to your knee and then to your hip. A problem in any one component in this chain will damage your knee, because it is caught in the middle.
The reason for pain So, what causes the pain? While improper footwear (shoes that do not provide enough cushioning) and incorrect posture (putting excess pressure on your knee) while you are exercising are common causes, there is one more factor that can cause knee pain. Dr. Anjana explains, “The most commonly
overlooked factor is weak hip (gluteus medius and maximus) muscles. Butt muscles play an important role in stabilising the pelvis and your lower back, while at the same time help propel your body forward when you’re walking.” She adds that as long as your butt muscles are working correctly, your knee is not under any stress and so, is safe from pain or injury. However, if your butt muscles are weak, everyday activities such as walking, climbing and running will gradually wear out the joint, causing pain.
Common Causes of knee pain n Faulty foot alignment, flat fleet, pronated feet or high-arched feet. n Faulty knee or hip alignment (such as knock knees, bow legs). n Weak gluteal/ buttock muscles. n Weak knee muscles (such as quadriceps, hamstrings). n Weak deep core muscles.
>> Bridge is an exercise that helps to reduce knee pain
prevenT knee pain To prevent knee pain, you should work towards strengthening your hip and butt muscles. Dr. Anjana tells us that the following exercises will help prevent knee pain: n Bridge: Lie flat on your back. Lift your knees and bring your feet close towards your butt. Make sure that your feet are flat on the floor and then raise your torso so that your thighs, chest and neck form a straight line. n Side leg raises: Lie on your left side. Keep your left arm under your head and your right hand in front of your stomach, with your palm flat on the floor. Now, raise your right leg up, only up to a comfortable point. Hold for a few seconds and repeat with the other leg. n Clams: Lie down just like you would to perform side leg raises. Now, bend your knees till they form a rough 30° angle. Spread your knees so that one knee is in the air, while your feet are still touching each other. Remain in this position for a few seconds and repeat the same on the other side.

DisAster Alert
From the earthquake in Bhuj, to the floods in Kashmir, India has experienced several natural calamities. So, read our guide to prepare yourself for natural disasters in the future, says Yamini Walia
W
ith global warming at an all-time high, the world is steadily becoming more susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and cyclones. Unfortunately, people in India are not aware of what to do if these disasters occur without sufficient warning, even though disaster management has been introduced in almost every school curriculum. So, in part one of our disaster management guide, we’re telling you what to do when an earthquake or a tsunami takes place.
EArTHQuAKEs According to the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project, India is extremely vulnerable to earthquakes, with over 60% land prone to tremors measuring 7.0 or higher on the Richter scale. This is high enough to result in major structural damage.
WHAT To do
n If you are indoors, sit under a desk or a table, and hang on to it. You can also rush
to a hallway or press yourself against an inside wall. If you are outside your home, you are comparatively safer. Make sure that you are protecting yourself from anything that can fall on you, and move away from buildings, power lines and tall structures. n If you are driving, move your car as far away from traffic as you can. Sit inside your car till the shaking stops and once the tremors subside, stay away from fallen rocks or debris on the road. n If you are in a mountainous area, watch out for landslides, falling rocks and trees that might be loosened by an earthquake.
WHAT noT To do n If you are inside your house, steer clear of heavy furniture, electronic appliances and windows. n Do not turn on the gas again and contact your gas company to help you turn it on safely. n Use matches, lighters, barbecues and
electrical appliances only if you are certain that there is no gas leak. Don’t use your telephone, except in case of an emergency such as a fire.
Your first step should be to research and gather information about the possibility of a tsunami in your area and the number of times that it has occurred in the past. Once you are aware of the possible signs of a tsunami, chart out an evacuation plan, well in advance. For a fool-proof evacuation plan, consider your family, your workplace, your children’s school and your surroundings. If your society or community seems lethargic about planning, you should take the initiative. The following things should be kept in mind while charting out an evacuation plan: n Make a chart with your family, mapping important places in your evacuation plan. Know where you are going to re-unite with your family once the tsunami is over. n Organise practice drills, so that all your family members know what to do and where to go during an evacuation. n Make sure that everyone understands how to identify the warnings of a tsunami. n Remember to think of alternative safety routes, in case an earthquake has destroyed roads and other infrastructure, preventing exit from certain routes.
TsunAmis
EmErgEncy suppliEs
If you live in a coastal region, an earthquake can be an indication of a tsunami. Landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions and even meteorite strikes can give rise to tsunamis. Not many people are aware of how to identify one, so, educate yourselves by keeping the following points in mind.
To prepare for an earthquake or tsunami, always keep these emergency supplies on hand: n Fire extinguisher. n Adequate supplies of medication that you and family members need. n Crescent and pipe wrenches to turn off gas and water supplies. n First-aid kit and manual. n Flashlight with extra bulbs and batteries. n Water for every member in your family for at least three days and purification tablets or chlorine bleach to purify drinking water from other sources. n Canned and packaged foods, enough to last several days and a mechanical can opener. Carry extra food for pets if you have any. n Waterproof, heavy-duty plastic bags for waste disposal.
risE or fAll in WATErs If you notice any sudden rise or fall in sea levels, prepare yourself, as this might be an indication of a tsunami. If the sea suddenly recedes, leaving behind bare sand, then a tsunami is highly likely to occur.

Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis, or ALS, has no known origin, making it impossible to find a cure — up until now. Sara Shah tells you more
A
myotrophic Lateral Schlerosis, or ALS, is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells of your brain and spinal cord. These cells control your voluntary muscle movement and gradually deteriorate once they are affected by ALS. Your muscles stop working, which leads to paralysis and eventually, death. The origins of this disease are unknown and no possible cure has been found so far. However, a recent study conducted by Su-Chung Zhan, senior author and neuroscientist at the University of WisconsinMadison, which was published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, suggests that an error in protein formation could be the reason for Amyotropphic Lateral Sclerosis. Earlier, a genetic mutation was discovered in a small group of patients with ALS, after which, scientists transferred the genes into animals for drug treatment testing. Researchers have based this study on proteins that keep the transport structure in a motor neuron, named neurofilament, erect. The neurofilament is what moves chemicals and cellular parts, including neurotransmitters, to far sides of the nerve cell. They suggest that an error in protein formation or the misshapen protein are what blocks the route along the length of the nerve fibres and causes the nerve fibre to malfunction
>> ALS affects the nerve cells of your spinal cord
and eventually die. However, they also say that the reason for this error in protein formation lies in the shortage of one of the three proteins in the neurofilament. Zhang says, “Like the studs, joists and rafters of a house, the neurofilament is the backbone of the cell, but it’s constantly changing. These proteins need to be shipped from the cell body, where they are produced, to the most distant part, and then be shipped back for recycling. If the proteins cannot form correctly and be transported easily, they form tangles that cause a cascade of problems.” Additionally, similar malfunctions were seen amongst people with diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He says, “We got really excited, because when you study ALS, you may be looking at the root of several neurodegenerative disorders.” According to this study, such a mutation takes place at a very early stage and is their reason to believe that they might have found the origin of ALS. Zhang also said that when they ‘edited’ the degenerate gene in the lab, they found that it looked absolutely normal. Although the search for concrete results is still ongoing, researchers hope that they will introduce a potential drug for this deadly disease soon.

Please help! — Naina desai, Borivali dear Naina, There is a very simple solution to your problem, and no, it doesn’t involve giving up on wearing bright lipstick altogether! All you have to do is apply your lipstick, place a single ply of tissue over it, press down and then dust your lips lightly with a compact or talcum powder. Then remove the tissue, apply another coat of lipstick and dust it with powder again. This will seal your lipstick and prevent it from rubbing off easily or transferring on to your glass. This way, you can sport a beautiful, bold lipstick, without worrying about it smearing all over your face.

Celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston gush about how kale helps them maintain their amazing figures. But, are you aware of kale’s beauty benefits? As it turns out, the vegetable helps you amp up your beauty regime too! You may not have skin that’s as flawless as Gwyneth or Jennifer, but you will definitely notice a huge improvement once you incorporate kale into your daily diet and skincare routine. Read on to discover its numerous beauty benefits. n Stay sun safe: Kale contains copious amounts of antioxidants and vitamin C, making it a natural sun block. Vitamin A is present in several cosmetics and over-the-counter acne creams, which are usually unreasonably expensive. So, you might as well try a more natural solution to combat acne. And, if this does not work (we are quite sure it will), then by all means, go ahead and splurge on a medicated cream. The alleged victim went to the Mahila Police station in Meerut and said that she had “gone on her own free will” with the boy, a Muslim, controverting what she had said in her Sec 164 statement to a magistrate. However, the father of the girl has disputed her claim and said she has been threatened to give a retraction statement.
The girl has now told the police that she had run away from her house as there was “threat to her life” and alleged that she was also ‘beaten up’. Police said that after recording her statement in front of an executive magistrate, she has been sent to Nari Niketan (women’s home) for her safety and protection, reports PTI. “Right now she has come to the mahila police station at 8 a.m. and has told that she has gone on her own free will with a boy. But the case has already been charge sheeted and pending before the court.

‘We Need To Fix The Plumbing’ Says RBI Guv Believes that while India has to do its basic homework, the ‘good news’ is that there are ‘lots of low-hanging fruit and we got to pluck them’ By Yoshita Singh
S
tating Indian economic recovery is still uneven, RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has exuded optimism that the country will be "solidly" in the 5 per cent growth bracket during the course of this fiscal and accelerate further in the next financial year. The RBI governor also said he is not "overly" worried about any interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, saying the country had enough foreign exchange reserves. "It is still an uneven (economic )recovery, so my guess is that this quarter may be a little weaker than the previous quarter but I think over the course of this year, we will be solidly in the five per cent growth range and by next year we should be solidly in the six per cent growth range," he said. Rajan was speaking at the Institute of International Finance in Washington on Saturday. He also said there was no need for "grand-sounding announcements" and that the India needed to "fix the plumbing," including correcting problems in coal and gas sectors to accelerate improve recovery and get the Indian economy back on track. Rajan said that while India has to do its basic homework, the "good news" is that there are "lots of lowhanging fruit and we got to pluck them". "Of course the big question is why we did not do it before but I think there is an environment and there is a willingness at this point to do what it takes. "What it means, I would caution people on, is not at this point grand-sounding announcements because that is not
what we really need. "We need to fix the plumbing. We need to do the basic stuff which will get the economy back on track," he said when asked how India will meet the high expectations that have been set by the new Narendra Modi government to revive economic growth. In a lighter vein, Rajan said the expectations need to be toned down. He however added that on the real side focus should be on getting the projects that are stalled going again, fixing problem in coals and gas, "which are not the stuff of headlines but are quite important" as well as getting businesses and government departments to make payments on time. Rajan beleives beyond 2016, the economy will grow depending on what the country does over these couple of years. The governor noted that there is massive push on infrastructure. "On energy we have to get the pricing of energy right in India. This means gas pricing, coal pricing so as to give people incentive to explore and invest. These are the big issues the government is tackling, what is the appropriate price for gas, what is the appropriate price and flexibility to produce for coal. "I think in the next few months, these big decisions will be made and that will create a much clear environment for investment in energy which India needs tremendously," Rajan added. On whether the India government will be able to deliver on the expectations of economic growth, he said. "Talk is cheap. What we really have to do is deliver. We have to start delivering...We are in the process of doing it, but watch the space and see the results. Hopefully that will convince you," he added. (PTI)
Jan 2015 LCR goal now achievable, but meeting the 2019 target will need support from corporate bond market, says Crisil By A Business Reporter
T
he Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) recent revision of the Basel-III liquidity guidelines will help banks meet the liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) threshold of 60% by January 2015. Nevertheless, this change alone will not be enough to attain the long-term target of 100% LCR by January 2019. CRISIL believes that, among other things, diversification of India’s corporate bond market beyond the financial sector can play an important role towards this objective. The Basel-III guidelines on LCR are aimed at building banks’ resilience to disruptions in systemic liquidity. They require banks to hold sufficient high-quality liquid assets (HQLA) to cover potential cash outflows (net of inflows) in a stress scenario lasting 30 days. HQLAs consist of government securities, highly rated corporate bonds, and commercial paper. The revision announced in the September monetary policy review, allows banks to include a higher share (7% of net demand and time
liabilities, up from 2% earlier) of their government security holdings under statutory liquidity requirements (SLR) as a part of HQLA. Detailed guidelines around operationalising the liquidity facility and clarity on aspects such as mark-to-market requirement and cost of facility are expected in November 2014. As per the initial guidelines, an estimated Rs.6.6 trillion of government securities (including Rs.4.8 trillion of excess SLR) qualified as HQLA for the banking system. This was not sufficient for most banks to meet their LCR targets. Says Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings, “The revised norms allocate a greater share of bank investments in mandatory SLR towards HQLA. This will enhance the quantum of HQLA by an additional Rs.4.5 trillion for the entire system. This should help most banks to comfortably meet their near-term LCR requirement of 60% by January 1, 2015. As for attaining 100% LCR by January 1, 2019, banks face three main challenges. First is that a majority of banks advances - such as
cash-credit facilities, which account for 45% of total advances do not qualify for inclusion as inflows in a stressed situation because their tenures are not fixed. Second, banks have substantial deposits from financial institutions and corporates (nearly 25% of total deposits). A large portion of these are considered outflows in a stressed situation. Third, bonds and commercial paper issued by financial sector entities, which form 70% of India’s annual capital market issuance’s, cannot be included in HQLA. While a phased reduction in SLR from the current level of 22% would help partly offset these challenges, a deepening of India’s corporate bond market is also critical. Says Rajat Bahl, Director, CRISIL Ratings, “We estimate that less than 10% of banks’ HQLA is in the form of non-financial corporate bonds and commercial paper, as against the permissible 40%. A deepening of the corporate bond market over the medium term will allow for more issuances from the corporate sector, and enable banks to meet their LCR requirements.

C
ar sales in India declined 1.03% in September, after posting four months of consecutive growth, as customers postponed purchases during the month on account of festival season beginning in October. According to the data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic car sales in September this year stood at 1,54,882 units as compared to 1,56,494 units in the same month of 2013. "We think people have postponed their buys from September to October. That's the only reason we can think of regarding this marginal decline in car sales," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters in New Delhi. He added that with major festivals lined up in October, the car sales are expected to grow during the month. "Definitely the sentiment is better this festival season. Companies are hoping that they will see better sales this October as compared to the same month last year," Mathur said.

Under the Horizon Series, ICCR, Mumbai is presenting a performance of Hindustani classical music by Zeeshan Khan (vocals) which will be followed by a Bharatnatyam dance recital by Dr Ranjani Ganesan Ramesh with Nithyanritya Dance Ensemble at Rangaswar, Y B Chavan Centre, on Tuesday, October 14 at 6.30 pm.

on the tabla by Ashok Pandey. Paramanand Yadav sang some Sufi compositions to the delight of the audience. He was also felicitated on completing 50 years of his eventful life. 'Raikar Academy of Violin' held a grand function at the Karnataka Sangha in which ace violinist from the film industry Prabhakar Jog was given a special award. Asha Manape, another violinist, was also honoured with the san-
man reserved for violin gurus. Students of Milind Raikar played raga 'Yaman' through a violin concerto. His son and pupil Yadnesh played the raga 'Miyan Ki Malhar' in style. Mugdha Vaishampayan, winner of the TV reality show 'Sa Re Ga Ma', sang the raga Bibhas. It was a superb rendering of the raga. Milind Raikar delighted with his solo performance playing the raga 'Bilwal' and 'Bhairavi'. It was indeed a memorable function.
Dance for the goddess
The students who enacted varied roles were Snigdha, Akila, Sakshi, Niyati, Shyama and Meghana. While most of them were trying to do their best, one felt that that Akila as Hanuman needed to be more lively and energetic as Hanuman symbolises vitality and power. Based on the composition of Guru Rajee Narayan, the dance drama had wonderful music and commentary in Hindi that takes the story forward, with wonderful choreography and synchronisation, the credit for which goes to mentor Guru Gayatri Subrmaniam. Manali Deo's Kathak was noteworthy for its layakari with support on the tabla by Rohit Deo. Priya Singh is an excellent Odissi danseuse, forming a fine synthesis of both pure and expressional dance and her personality exudes feminine charm, which is typical in the Odissi style. The programme concluded with the students of Guru Jyothi Mohan performing 'Devarapanam' with ease and precision. Lalita Soni and her disciples performed 'Bhasmasura'.

Among those present on stage were Sagarika Rai, Shyamrang Shukla, Sidhaarth Kashyap and Yadav himself. Shravani Mukherjee from Benaras played the raga 'Bageshri' on the sitar. She was supported

‘Ashiyana’ music launched
The music launch and first look of 'Ashiyana' by Om Sai Siddhi Productions was held at a suburban five star recently. The film is directed by debutant Ajit Devle with music by Prabhakar Narwade. It introduces three new girls, Sai Kalyankar, Krutika Gaikwad, and Nehaa Patil. It also stars Yatin Karyekar, Sanjivani Jadhav and Prafula Samant. The film releases on October 31.
‘Shali’ launched with song recording
Director Atul Satam's adaptation of a short story by Shankar Patil titled ‘Shali’ was launched with a song recording sung by Bela Shende, with lyrics by Guru Thakur. The film is set in Konkan of the 70s and 80s. The film has music by Vijay Narayan Gawande. The film will be written by eminent litterateur Madhu Mangesh Karnik .
‘Mamachya Gavala Jaao Yaa’ to release
The way kids handle modern gadgets gives us a feel that they are IT experts. But the continuous exposure to smart phones, tablets and computers has only led to many diseases at a very young age. So to bring people close to nature, Pune based Punkaj Challaani is producing 'Mamachya Gavala Jaaoo Yaa'. Having earlier coproduced 'Dhagedore', he had the confidence to produce 'Mamachya Gavala Jaaoo Yaa' set in Satara. It stars Abhijeet Khandkekar and Mrunmayee Deshpande in pivotal roles.
the boy is now a famed doctor in the US which makes Amte proud. The early days of Amte right from his college days in Nagpur in the shadows of his father, another selfless social worker Baba Amte, who has devoted his life for the betterment of those inflicted with leprosy, are shown in the movie. They are the only father-son couple to be awarded with the Ramon Magsasay Awards. Director Samruddhi Porey has made a beautiful film though some might call it a documentary but the bio-pic has been superbly researched and presented and she deserves kudos for making such a breathtaking film. The film has a commendable perform-
ance by Nana Patekar who has portrayed the passion and selfless spirit of Dr Prakash Amte beautifully. Sonalee Kulkarni as his wife delivers an impressive performance. Mohan Agashe as Baba Amte is good as usual. Gary Richardson, Vikram Gaikwad, Bharat Ganeshpure, Hridaynath Rane, and the rest of the cast is adequate. DOP Mahesh Aney has kept his shot-taking simple and effective which enhances the story. Rahul Ranade’s music and Guru Thakur’s lyrics are impressive. The editing could have been sharper as it has many dissolves which harms the tempo of the film. All in all, a great film about a great man.

KOKE STRIKES POWERS SPORTS
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2014
I will fight till end for my team, says Del Piero
NEW DELHI: He may have played in just one practice game in the run-up to the Indian Super League but Delhi Dynamos' marquee player Alessandro Del Piero is geared up for their first match against FC Pune City, to be held here tomorrow, and says he will "fight till the end" for his team. "I have been training for the last four weeks and though I have played just one practice match it will be okay tomorrow," the 39year-old Del Piero told reporters on the eve of the match. He added:"I can assure you I will fight till the end for my team." It will be a reunion of sorts for Del Piero and FC Pune City star David Trezeguet as the two had spent some good years in Juventus. Both were part of the Juventus team when the Serie A giants were relegated to second division following the 2006 match-fixing scandal that rocked Italian football. They were also the ones singing the redemption song when the club, also called the Old Lady of Turin, returned to top-flight football and dominated the league. "It will be fun to play against him (Trezeguet). We have played for so long together in Juventus and we were one of the best strike partners. Now, we will be playing face to face," said Del Piero when asked about playing against the Frenchman who, like the Italian, is also a World Cup winner. Dynamos coach Harm van Veldhoven said there was no fitness issue in the team. "For the last five to six weeks, my team has trained rigorously. As this is an entirely new tournament, we have hardly any idea about the strategy of the opponent team, but they also have no idea about us. “

UWAHATI: Sergio Contreras Pardo, otherwise known as Koke, scored the only goal of the match in first half stoppage time to power NorthEast United FC to a solitary goal win over Kerala Blasters FC in a tightly contested second game of the Hero Indian Super League at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Monday night. The Spanish midfielder took advantage of a poor clearance by the Kerala defenders, rushing onto the ball and putting it past former England goalkeeper David James in the far left corner with a sweetly time half-
volleyed effort. This is the third goal in the tournament scored by a Spanish player. Kerala Blasters came out with intent as they looked to take control of the match at the start. Joan Capdevila gave away a free kick as early as in the first minute. The men in yellow pushed forward positively and had the lion's share of the possession. Kerala even had the ball in the back of the net in the 16th minute but Ian Hume was denied by the offside flag. Garcia was unstoppable, says Reid K
OLKATA: Luis Garcia might not have scored a goal in their 3-0 rout of Mumbai City FC but that he was at the centre of Atletico de Kolkata's attack was acknowledged by none other than their opponents' manager Peter Reid. "I think Garcia played beautifully and we were unable to contend him," the English pundit said of the former Liverpool star who was part of their 2005 UEFA Champions League team. Without taking anything away from Atletico de

Kolkata, he said: "I think it's fair to say the better team won on the day. They passed better than us." The Mumbai attack lacked sting without Nicolas Anelka (suspension) and Freddie Ljungberg (calf muscle injury) but Reid insisted to focus on the ground realities that they did not pass well. "I don't want to make any excuse. We did not pass the ball well. It's not a pleasant thing, we can only get better. You cannot win football matches if you give the ball
away. I made a couple of changes, I thought we started the second half better. But the second goal changed the complexion of the game," Reid told reporters after their loss at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in the ISL opener. On confusion about the availability of the mercurial Frenchman Anelka, Reid said they did not want to risk going against the FIFA ban despite a green signal from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
half, apart from a few tame attempts from both sides. Durga Boro got everyone out of their seats with an incredible long range effort, only to be denied by James with a fantastic save. Boro was replaced in the 62nd minute by Milan Singh, seemingly with a niggle, and minutes later Kerala made two substitutions in quick succession to hopefully force something out of the game. The conditions took its toll on the players towards the final quarter of the game, with players calling halts and cramping up. The home side were con-
tent to sit back and play on the counter though Korean substitute Do Dong-Hyun could have put the game to bed but skied a shot from a few yards out with an open goal in front of him. Kerala left-back Jamie McAllister was the only played booked in the entire match by referee Pratap Singh. NorthEast United FC host Atletico de Kolkata at home on October 16 while Kerala Blasters FC hope to revive their campaign when they take on Chennaiyin FC in the Tamil Nadu capital on October 21.
ISL will change the face of Indian football: Tendulkar G
UWAHATI: Sachin Tendulkar feels that Indian Super League has begun on the right note and the "fantastic start" yesterday would be a huge boost towards changing the face of the game in the country. Tendulkar is one of the coowners of the ISL franchise Kerala Blasters FC which is being led by former England goalkeeper David James. "It (ISL) is a new beginning. Everyone is looking for it. It had a fantastic start yes-
terday. The teams showed tremendous spirit and the crowd was very supportive," Tendulkar, who is here to support his team Kerala Blasters said. Tendulkar said that ISL will change the face of Indian football. "It (ISL) is a big moment for Indian football. This initiative is going to change Indian football. I feel nice to be a part of it. I think the entire nation needs to be behind this."
PISTORIUS BACK IN COURT FOR PRE-SENTENCING ARGUMENTS 30

J
OHANNESBURG: Fallen paralympic hero Oscar Pistorius returns to court at the start of his sentencing hearing after he was convicted of culpable homicide in the killing of his girlfriend, with his lawyers set to argue for leniency. The double-amputee track star last month escaped a murder conviction in a verdict that shocked the country and fuelled criticism of South Africa's legal system. Kicking off what is expected to be a lengthy sentencing process, the defence team will bring mitigation arguments before Judge Thokozile Masipa in the High Court in Pretoria. Prosecutors will follow by arguing for aggravating circumstances. The process is expected to last up to four days, with Masipa then likely adjourning court and announcing her sentencing decision at a later date. The "Blade Runner" could face as much as 15 years in one of South Africa's notoriously brutal prisons or could dodge a jail term altogether with a non-custodial sentence after being foundd guilty on the equivalent of a manslaughter charge, but not guilty of premeditated murder. The court will begin by hearing defence witnesses testify on why Pistorius should not serve time behind bars. They are likely to argue that the country's prisons are not

Batra completed his four-year term as the secretary-general and with no opposition in the HI ranks did not face any problems during his elevation to the top post. All the office-bearers were elected unopposed at today's meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said,"I will extend complete support from the Ministry and myself to hockey for competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 World Cup in India as I am very much confident that the team will come up with even better results in their upcoming and future tournaments." Talking about his new role, Batra said,"Also, being appointed as an unopposed President, I feel overwhelmed with the trust and faith that the members have showed in me.”

which the defence will raise is, of course, the fact that Oscar is a first time offender," he added. In turn, the state will call witnesses to testify on why he should serve the stiffest penalty, raising the issue of his history of negligence with firearms. After the sentence is handed down, both the state and defence can appeal, a legal process likely to drag out for years. In September, Judge Masipa ruled the 27-year-old did not knowingly shoot to kill 29-year-old model and law graduate Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. The sprinter admitted he fired four hollow point bullets through a locked toilet door in his upmarket Pretoria home, but said he believed he had been shooting at a burglar. Masipa's ruling outraged many South Africans, including lawyers who believed she misinterpreted the definition of murder and questioned whether the justice system is failing the crime-plagued country. Pistorius is currently out on bail of one million rand (USD 90,000). He had to sell his posh house inside a gated compound in Pretoria, the scene of the crime, to fund the cost of the trial, and has withdrawn from competitive sport since his arrest.

Narayanan close to GM norm in World Junior Chess P
UNE: International Master S L Narayanan needs just a draw against China's Wei Yi in the eighth round to secure a Grandmaster norm in the World Junior Chess Championship now underway here. After winning the national junior championship some time back, Narayanan had announced his arrival in the Indian chess scene and the youngster has lived up to expectations in the premier event for junior players here. Having beaten the likes of Vladislav Kovalev of Belarus and Kamil Dragun of Poland earlier in the tournament, Narayanan currently shares the second spot in the championship on 5.5 points and will look forward to his Grandmaster norm first before going further.
While Narayanan has been the best player among Indians thus far, the Grandmaster trio of Vidit Gujrathi, Sahaj Grover and Ankit Rajpara have not quite posed the challenge they were expected to do. Grover and Rajpara have 4.5 points each while Gujrathi is only on four points despite starting as the highest rated Indian and the defending bronze medallist. Sahaj Grover was doing well until the last round when disaster struck and he handed the game in a platter to Karen Grigoryan of Armenia. There was certain exhaustion visible in Grover's game and the rest day should help him recover soon. With six rounds still to come, a lot can happen and can change as has been the case in many
of the championships before but Jorge Cori of Peru has no complaints past the half way mark as he is leading on six points. With Cori in front, Narayanan is sharing the second spot with Wei Yi, Lu Shanglei of China and Karen Grigoryan. Grandmaster in waiting Arvindh Chathambaram is among those who have five points each. In the girls' championship, being organised simultaneously, Padimini Rout meets her toughest opponent after the lone rest day in defending champion Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia. Rout has been at her best in the event so far and a good result int he next round can propel her to go for the gold which has thus far eluded the Indian girl.
JITU SAYS HE FEELS ‘SHAMEFUL’ ABOUT ASKING FOR PROMOTION N SPORTS

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2014
EW DELHI: 'Pistol King' Jitu Rai, who is employed with the Indian army, says he feels "shameful" about asking for promotion in his rank after winning gold in Commonwealth and Asian Games. Jitu has been in the form of his life, bagging two gold in three months in two multisporting events, but he flatly refused to talk about promotion. "I have been given two out of turn promotions last year and I am grateful to the Indian Army for that. If you ask me I will say it will be shameful of me if I ask for promotion thought I have won back-to-back gold," Jitu said on the sidelines of a felicitation function. Jitu, now a naib-subedar at the 11th Gurkha Regiment, was given promotion last year after winning a silver in the National Championships and a bronze in Asian Championships in Iran. "But for the Army, I would not have reached this stage.
The journey has been amazing till now but it has happened due to the Indian Army. I have been given every facility by the Army and there has been no complaint from my side," said the 27-year-old Jitu who won gold in 50m pistol event in Incheon. "From the paddy fields on Nepal upto here, I have come a long way. I have never imagined that I will achieved this much and I am indebted to the Army for my achievement." Understandably, Jitu said his Incheon Asian Games gold medal was more satisfying than the Glasgow CWG win, also in 50m pistol. "In Glasgow Commonwealth Games, I was a bit relaxed and took a bit easy. But, I had worked meticulously and I gave a lot of effort while going into the Incheon Games. So, it was more satisfying," he said. Despite winning gold in 50m air pistol event in both Glasgow and Incheon, Jitu
said that 10m air pistol was his favourite event. "I have been doing well in both but if I have to choose, I will go for 10m air pistol. This event has given me a lot of success in the last few years," he said. This year, Jitu won a silver and a gold in ISSF World Cup in Munich and Maribor respectively in 10m air pistol. He also won a bronze in 10m air pistol team event in Incheon. He also clinched a silver in the World Championships in Granada, Spain. Asked about his next target, he said, "Now, I am competing in World Cup final this month and I want to do well there." Modest as ever, Jitu said he felt the same old shooter despite winning seven medals, including three gold, in top events this year. "I felt like the same old Jitu, I have not changed a bit and I did not think I have become a big star. It is you (media) which has made me big," said Jitu.
31 BCCI cancels third ODI in ‘Hudhud’ hit Vizag NEW DELHI: The BCCI cancelled the third ODI between India and the West Indies in Visakhapatnam after cyclone 'Hudhud' left the ACA-VDCA cricket stadium there in unplayable condition. "The third game of the Micromax Cup India vs West Indies ODI series 2014, which was to be played at Visakhapatnam on 14 October, has been cancelled as a result of the natural calamity that has impacted the city," BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement. The last two matches of the ongoing series will be played as per schedule at Dharamshala and Kolkata on October 17 and 20 respectively. The teams are currently tied 1-1 in the series after India beat the visitors in the second ODI here.
ICC crackdown on chuckers 20 years too late: Umpire Hair S
Top ranking means nothing for World Cup, says Bailey A
BU DHABI: Australia's stand-in captain George Bailey admits that regaining the number one ranking will count for nothing once they launch their assault on the World Cup on home soil in February. Australia claimed a nail-biting one-run victory in the 50th and final over on Sunday to take the third one-dayer against Pakistan and complete a 3-0 cleansweep. They won the first match in Sharjah by 93 runs and the second by five wickets in Dubai and are now back in the world number one spot having dislodged India. "You're trying to win every game you play. As a team, a whitewash is what you want," said Bailey, who has been standing in for injured skipper Michael Clarke. "It's lovely to be ranked number one in the world but come the World Cup, I think, it will have zero bearing. It means nothing." Pakistan, chasing a modest
232-run target, were well on course with Asad Shafiq (50) and Sohaib Maqsood (34) joining in a 74-run fourth wicket stand. But they then lost five wickets for 54 runs as Australia sensed victory with 24 runs still needed for a win. "To see our energy, our fight and our intent to get through difficult periods and get through the pressure that Pakistan were putting on and throw it back at them -- that was more pleasing," said Bailey of Australia's fightback. "That's the sort of stuff that will happen in the World Cup." Bailey praised bowler Glenn Maxwell who defended two runs with a maiden final over, taking two wickets for the onerun win. "It was pretty stressful. Ideally we're taking those wickets earlier. I felt unless we got some wickets and got ourselves back in the game then they were going to win the game in about the 47th over," said Bailey.
YDNEY: The ICC crackdown on bowlers with suspect action has come 20 years too late, says former international umpire Darrel Hair, who famously called Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan for alleged chucking during a Test in Melbourne in 1995. "Whatever they're doing now, they're doing 20 years too late," Hair was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. Hair feels the world body has allowed "chuckers" to flourish. "They (the ICC) had a chance in 1995 to clean things up and it's taken them 19 years to finally come back and say they want chuckers out of the game. I can't believe that Saeed Ajmal has been able to bowl as long as he has, and they say he is bending his arm by 45 degrees (the legal limit is 15 degrees) or something. "Well, every man and his dog would have known that. I suppose what it does show is the general weakness of the umpires over time to do anything about it," said the Australian who officiated in 78 Tests and 139 ODIs. The ICC reported Pakistan's prolific spinner Ajmal for suspect action in August
while West Indies off-spinner Test incident in 1995 when Sunil Narine was reported Muralitharan no-balled Muduring the recently held ralitharan for an illegal acChampions League T20 tion, Hair said: "People say tournament. 'you should be happy with Recalling the Boxing Day the way things turned
out'...With the chuckers being weeded out. But it doesn't give me any personal satisfaction whatsoever," he said. "All I was doing at any time was just doing my job and I think I did it to the best of my ability. The fact was that no other ICC umpires were willing to have a go. Ross Emerson was very adamant about his thoughts about chuckers but they soon put him into the background," the 62-yearold added. Muralitharan was called again in Australia by Emerson during an ODI in 1999. His action was later cleared and he went on to become of the game' greats. Hair said the likes of Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh and Saqlain Mushtaq got away lightly. "I said it in the late '90s that if something wasn't done about it you'd have a generation of chuckers on your hands and now you have. They try to emulate Harbajan Singh and Saqlain Mushtaq and Murali and that's the problem. The crackdown should have happened on those players and the ICC should have let it be known that it wasn't acceptable," he added.

EW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of India's Incheon Asian Games campaign at a felicitation of the medal winners by contingent sponsors Samsung India here. Mary Kom, who became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal in Asian Games when she clinched the yellow metal in the Incheon Games in flyweight (-51kg) class, was named the MVP after a poll. All the 11 individual/team gold winners, including the men's hockey team, were in the contest. None of the members of gold-winning men's hockey team turned up for the felicitation event while the Indian Olympic Association was represented by its treasurer Anil Khanna. Khanna said IOA President N Ramachandran and Secretary General Rajeev Mehta could not make it to the event
as they had some "prior engagements". Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, pistol shooter Jitu Rai, discus thrower Seema Punia, 4x400m relay runner M R Poovamma were among those gold winners who turned up for the felicitation event. India won 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze in the Incheon Asian Games. Mary Kom said the gold in the Asian Games had proved that she can still be in her top form despite being a mother of three children. "Many people had doubted whether I would be able to win a gold in the Asian Games at this situation. First, it is difficult in our society to continue this kind of sport after having three children," said the fivetime world champion. "There is a mindset that a woman after becoming a mother cannot achieve success in sport. But I think I have proven wrong this kind of thinking and mindset," she said.
India lose to Britain in Johor Cup J
OHOR BAHRU (MALAYSIA): The Indian U-21 hockey team went down 0-2 against Britain in their second match of the Sultan of Johor Cup. The first half of the game saw both the teams making desperate efforts and giving each other a tough fight to score the opening goal of the match. Although both the teams made several attempts to put the ball in the net, the first goal came in as late as in the 28th minute of the match from the stick of Benjamin James Boon.
Trailing by a goal, the Indian men came out attacking in the second half but could not keep pace with the opponent team and it was in the 50th minute of the game that Samuel French managed to extend Britain's lead. The Indian men kept up the fight till the last minute of the match but it was all in vain. Commenting on the match, coach Harendra Singh said, "The boys played well but failed to create opportunities that could be converted into goals.
