This came to light amidst court proceedings following which an arrest warrant was issued against him. The Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Kurla issued arrest warrant against Anna Durai Balu Devendra who had several cases against him registered in Antop Hill police station for committing crimes in various adjoining areas. According to Police sources, on September 1, 2014, the Metropolitan Magistrate, 61st Court, Kurla issued arrest warrant against Devendra. Magistrate has ordered Devendra to be produced in court on October 15, 2014. The court issued an order following an incident which occurred on February 2, 2007. and Congress candidate Jasbirsingh Veera at Karmaveer Dadasaheb Gaikwad Nagar, Municipal Hindi School, near Rawali Fire Brigade, Antop Hill. The two candidates were both involved in rallies, following which there was a free-for-fall between the supporters of both parties. Not just this, the supporters pelted stones on the police and also police lathi-charged them and in the course of this fracas, a few police officers were injured during the stone pelting incident. Balu Devendra, police arrested all the accused who were produced in court. The matter is still pending in the court. In the course of the hearing, Devendra lawyer produced a certificate in court claiming that his client (Anna Durai Balu Devendra) had expired on March 19, 2008. Surprisingly, police constable Santosh Sakharam Koyande who is complainant in the matter also verified that Anna Durai Balu Devendra had expired. On April 29, 2014 S. Ganeshan brought to light, the fact that Devendra's death certificate was an expert case of forgery. However, police did not taken any action against Devendra. After suitable verification and understanding that Devendra was very much alive, the court issued as arrest warrant against Devendra. Interestingly, another man Anna Durai Balram Devendra had expired due to illness. His father’s name was Balram and Devendra’s father’s name was Balu. Taking advantage of the similarity in the names, Devendra had produced a death

number of parents gathered outside gate 6 of St Mary's School at Malwani, Malad(W ), yesterday, in protest against the authorities of the school which had taken the students to the Mount Mary Fair without permission from their parents to seek donations for construction in the school. According to sources, the school had planned construction activities in its premises for which it distributed receipts to students of Classes 1 to 7 to donate Rs 2,500 and Classes 8 to 9 students to donate Rs 5,000 towards the school. Since the students were not able to donate the required amount, the school took a batch of 15-20 students from different classes to the Mount Mary Fair and told them to ask people attending the event to donate money for the construction. The school took different groups of 15 students to the fair between Sunday and Wednesday. When the parents got curious about why their children were coming home late from school,

they found out about the school's activities and were enraged by it. Asmat Jahan, a parent, said, “I didn't know why my child was coming home late. So when I asked around, I learned that the children were being taken to the fair to ask for donations to help them in the construction.” Another parent, Farha Shaikh, said, “Why should we bear the burden of paying for the school's construction activities? I was shocked to know that my child was made to ask for donations at the Mount Mary Fair.” The parents then got in touch with each other and and staged a protest outside the school gate on Wednesday. Sushma Mista, the principal of the school, said, “The students were not forcefully sent to ask for donations at the event. We did give our students receipts requesting them to donate towards the school's construction, but we told them to do so in their capacity. The children were taken to the event by tuition teachers who are part of the school. I have sent memos to these teachers requesting them to explain their actions. After that we will take action against these teachers.”

certificate in the court. The B which stood for Balram also was suitable for his initial Balu. Presently there are four criminal cases registered against ‘dead Devendra’ in Antop Hill police station. Anna Durai Balu Devendra is a resident of Kokari Agar, Raoli Camp, Antop Hill, Mumbai. He is famous for his criminal activities in Antop Hill area. Right to Information (RTI) reply revealed that eight offences have been registered against him in the Antop Hill police station. “I am not aware about incident. Now I will look into the matter. If Anna Durai Balu Devendra is accused we will take action against him,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, spokesperson of the Mumbai police. Senior Police Inspector from Antop Hill Police station Sanjay Surve said, ''We are having seven people with the name of Anna Durai Balu Devendra, but if you are talking about the person who is having various cases against him, we will verify and arrest him soon and produce him before the Kurla Court.”

He said no to rescue

THIRTY-YEAR-OLD George Johnson, project coordinator at Life Help Center, a school for children with special needs run by an NGO in Natipora area of Srinagar is waging his own battle with a bunch of nine children affected with autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Down syndrome. He refused to leave this place without his students. It is difficult to evacuate these children via boats as the flood water can cause panic in them. Keeping them in rescue shelters was not feasible as the people there would not know how to deal with them. The parents of the children have been informed about the situation but they are stuck in various parts of the state. An elder brother of one of the boys visited but could not take the boy along as all the roads are flooded. He instead clicked a photograph of his brother to show it to his parents. Water entered the ground floor of the three-storey building where the children are housed. The biggest fear was that the building would collapse, but the children are coping well with the situation, though they know that things are not normal. These children are free birds. They are not affected by the irregularities of a normal life. Armed with a water purifier, stock of food that might last a few more days, three caretakers and a cook, they might soon run out of supplies. What they need most right now is baking powder and they do not know when the supplies will reach them.

Longest handshake

PM Narendra Modi appears to be very good at 'handshake diplomacy.' It looks like he does it with warm sincerity. His intention is perhaps to show that he is very glad to meet that dignitary and that a handshake brings in friends and a desire to cooperate and live in peace.

It all began on the day Mr. Modi was sworn in as prime minister. He greeted Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif with a warm handshake and Sharif wanted to withdraw his hand, but Modi clasped it and would not let him do it. He expressed in no small measure his desire to build goodwill with Pakistan. The next chance Mr. Modi had to display this handshake was when

he met the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He held his hand tightly for sometime. And finally he got the chance to do it with the Chinese president Xi Jinping, yesterday. Perhaps it was

the longest handshake ever. The Chinese president tried more than once to free his hand, but without success. Not only he held the hand but he shook it vigorously. It was indeed a historic hand shake.

WALK into any ice-cream parlour and you can probably pick out your favourite flavours by their distinctive colours. The deep black-brown of Belgian chocolate, the burgundy red of raspberry, the green of pistachio, and the wild swirl of rainbow sherbet. Now one Spanish scientist has turned that law of desserts on its head by doing the unimaginable: creating colour-changing ice cream. The genius behind this icy confection is physicist and electrical engineer turned ice cream maker Manuel Linares. Linares calls his frozen treat Xamale贸n. The ice cream's colour-changing properties are patent-pending, and Linares is keeping them a secret for now. But we do know that the ice

cream starts out blue and only begins to change colour after it has been sprayed with something Linares calls a 'love elixir'. And, yes, some reports do allege that it has aphrodisiac qualities. After being sprayed with Linares' potion, the ice cream turns a deep purple colour over the course of 10 to 15 seconds. It then further changes colour when you lick it. The story comes from Linares' local news site, Diari de Girona. A follow-up piece from Sploid adds that this ice cream genius is working on other types of colourchanging treats, such as one that changes from white to pink and another that changes colour under the ultraviolet lights of nightclubs.

THANKSGIVING

Prayer to St. Jude. Oh glorious apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered thy beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused thee to be forgotten by many, but the Church honours and invokes thee universally as the patron of hopeless cases of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded thee of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succour of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (mention your request), and that I may bless God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise thee, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, and I will never cease to honour thee as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to thee. Bhabha bungalow 100 years old, HC allows petitioners to approach Central government

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

By Philip Varghese

A

lmost a month after the Bombay High Court recorded the contents of the affidavit filed by the central government showing its inability to declare the bungalow of nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha as a heritage structure since it is not more than 100 years old, the High Court on Wednesday allowed the petitioners to approach the central government after the petitioners stated that they have some documents to show that the bungalow has been standing for more than 100 years.

This means that the employees of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) can make a representation before the union government on their plea to declare the Bhabha bungalow as a national monument. BARC employees, who had filed a PIL seeking to convert the bungalow into a museum, told a bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah that they had documents to show that the bungalow, 'Mehrangir', was more than 100 years old. Bhabha lived at 'Mehrangir', one of Mumbai's landmarks, for several years

before his death in an air crash around the French Alps in January 1966, following which his brother Jamshed Bhabha became the custodian of the property. A patron of the arts and culture, Jamshed looked after the property till his death in 2007 after which it was transferred to National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), an institution he had nurtured. The PIL was filed by BARC employees, represented by the Atomic Energy Workers and Staff Union of BARC president Prashant Worlikar and president of National Forum for Aided Institutions

Employees (Department of Atomic Energy) Raam Vitthal Dhuri. The sprawling sea-facing house of the father of India's nuclear programme was recently auctioned to a businessman for over Rs 300 crore by the NCPA, its custodian. Earlier, the Centre had evinced keen interest in acquiring the mansion but later it told the court that under the central laws it could not acquire the property and hence had asked the state government to take over the structure. The High Court has also recorded the contents of affi-

n its effort to swiftly distribute degree certificates and marksheets, departments in the Mumbai University seem to have forgotten the exact name of the degrees they offer. A quick glance at the degree certificates of the Masters course in communication and journalism for the last three years will reveal a glaring error on the part of the university. The name of the degree in the three certificates are all different. As written in Marathi, they read – 'Manvya-vidhya Adhisthanak' in 2010, 'Susanvadh Patrakarita Adhisthanak' in 2011, 'Jansampark Ani Patrakarti Adhisthanak' in 2012 – all for the same Master of Arts degree in communication and journalism. This has caused problems for students and the institutions where they apply for higher studies, because every year, students from Mumbai University who have done the same course turn up with certificates of different names. Pradeep Sawant, senate member of MU, said, “It's a disgrace that a top university in the Marathi-speaking state is unable to decide on the exact term of the degree. The examination depart-

The court observed, “The

purpose of the petitioners of filing the petition is served, since both the Central as well as State Government have been activated and the issue raised in the petition is under consideration. We are disposing off the petition, since pendency of the petition is causing inconvenience to the NCPA and successful bidder in proceeding with the future process of bid.”

This issue will be taken up in the senate meeting this October.” This is only one among the long list of fumbles by the Mumbai University. Last year, the ADC reported that the university did not print its hologram and watermark on a few marksheets, which rendered them invalid.

The ADC spoke to Dinesh Bhonde, Controller of Examination at MU, who said, “The terms are being rectified by the deans of the concerned faculty. They will be finalised for printing by the examination department. If there are any changes in the term, then it will be changed or finalised as soon as possible.”

KR, CR under pressure to ply extra trains Railway officials claim that frequently plying extra trains affects the maintenance of railway, thus jeopardising the safety of passengers By Vishnudas Sheshrao

T

he Central Railway (CR) and Konkan Railway (KR), even after giving a poor performance over its ambitious announcement of 200 special trains for Konkan during the Ganesh festival, have now come under political pres-

sure to facilitate a dozen extra special trains on the Konkan single line route for the Diwali season. During the Ganesh festival, the Konkan Railway, Central Railway and Western Railway had announced 200 plus trains. However, the single line railway route could not cope with the number of the trains and the entire system collapsed as several trains were cancelled at the eleventh hour without prior notice. At present, there are an average of 52 trains per day – including Rajdhani, Shatabdhi, express and passenger trains on the route along with 15 goods trains.

A railway official said, “Managing 50 trains per day is a very tough task on the single route and there is hardly any time left for maintenance. When special trains were plied on the Konkan route during the Ganesh festival, goods trains were cancelled to manage the traffic flow.” The stretches between Pen and Kasu, Kasu and Nagothane and Nagothane and Roha are 13 km each. Owing to geographical positions and curves on the rail route, the speed is restricted to 55 kmph (from 80 kmph). In addition, due to monsoon, the speed is further restricted to 30 kmph.

With a speed of 30 kmph, only two to three trains can pass in an hour on the single route and a maximum of 49 trains a day. Another official said that during the Ganesh festival, there was no time for maintenance of the system. It could have jeopardised the safety of the rail system as well as onboard passengers. “Fortunately, nothing happened, except a derailment of a goods train,” he said. He added that by adding extra trains on a single route, “We are cutting maintenance time and consequently jeopardising the system. But we have to give in to political and public pressure.”

While an agreement was signed between Guangdong province and Gujarat government for development of cultural and social ties between the two provinces, another MoU was inked between Guangzhou city and Ahmedabad, to make them sister cities. These MoUs will facilitate exchange of ideas and services between Gujarat and China, officials told PTI. Besides Modi and Xi, Chief Minister Anandi Patel and her Cabinet colleagues, members of Chinese delegation and several top businessmen from the state were present at the event. Modi also accompanied Xi to the tranquil Sabarmati Ashram on Ahmedabad's Ashram road and explained its historical significance to the Chinese leader. They later took a walk down the Sabarmati riverfront which was a riot of colour with the visiting dignitaries treated to a mix of Gujarati tradition and culture through dance forms including the famous garba

Red carpet welcome

State authorities rolled out the red carpet as Xi, the first Chinese leader to visit Gujarat, was given a warm welcome after an Air China special aircraft carrying him and his delegation landed at the airport. Giant billboards in Mandarin, Gujarati and English were put up at various places here to welcome him. Xi's three-day visit is aimed at ramping up trade and investments, besides having discussions on substantive issues including the contentious border dispute. It also coincides with Modi's 64th birthday. The three pacts were signed in the presence of Modi and Xi after the Chinese leader and his wife Peng Liyuan, dressed in a pale pink knee-length dress, were welcomed by the Prime Minister at the entrance of the Hyatt Hotel. Modi gave floral bouquets to the couple. The choice of Gujarat as Xi's first stop in India marks a departure from protocol and many see it as a sign of warm relations between the two leaders. When the couple landed at the Ahmedabad airport, apart from a guard of honour, there was a traditional Gujarati dance.

dance. Modi and Xi, who had a brief one-on-one meeting, will hold extensive talks tomorrow in Delhi following which the two sides are expected to sign a number of pacts which will provide for Chinese investments in a range of areas including railways and industrial parks. Largely described as a visit to focus on economic and trade issues, Xi is expected to announce large scale Chinese investments in railways, manufacturing as well as infrastructure rivalling Japan's US $35 billion com-

mitment made during Modi's recent visit to Tokyo. Chinese officials say that China would be committing anywhere between $100 billion to $300 billion in the modernisation of Indian railways, establishing of industrial parks as well as investment in mega infrastructure projects. Xi is accompanied among others by State Councillor Yang Jiechi, who was earlier foreign minister, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng besides a number of businessmen and other leaders.

ED attaches properties of Lotus Refineries

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday attached the flats and offices worth Rs.17.98 crore belonging to Lotus Refineries under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in connection with the Rs 5,600crore NSEL scam. Chairman and Managing Director of Lotus Refineries, Arun Kumar Sharma, a film financier, had financed the Bollywood film 'Satya 2'. Sharma was arrested by the Economic Offence Wing of Mumbai Police in November last year. He later got bail.

ith both the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hardening their stance over who should contest how many Assembly seats, the smaller Mahayuti allies yesterday were seen frantically trying to play the role of the peacemaker. Party cadre from outside Mumbai from both the sides were clearly in favour of parting of ways, while those from Mumbai were wavering in their stand. At the time of going to the press, state BJP unit core committee members were scheduled to meet at the Worli residence of senior Union Minister for Surface Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari. Sources in the BJP disclosed that party president Amit Shah who was in town was not scheduled to attend the meeting at Gadkari's residence. plete with indirect barbs aimed at the BJP. Commenting on the recent Assembly by-election results, it argued that even the Congress could not claim that the victory was due to their top leaders. In the same breath it argued that the results were a lesson for Maharashtra and indirectly chided the BJP is not getting carried away by the recent successes and indulge in needless saber-rattling. Both Shetty and Athawale want the Sena-BJP alliance to allocate 12 seats to each of htem. Shetty urged the Sena-BJP leaders to take a final decision in couple of days and warned that the SSS will have to explore other options. According to a senior BJP leader, the party had for long tried to accommodate the Sena giving seven more Lok Sabha seats from the earlier 16 seats, the party even accommodated Athawale to the Rajya Sabha who actually had to be accommodated by the Sena. In turn the Sena has been unyielding in granting even a handful of Assembly seats to it.

s both the Congress and the NCP are adamant on their stance of contesting more seats and in no mood to relent, the stalemate over the seat-sharing remained intact. However, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday said that he is optimistic over the seatsharing agreement which will be resolved in the next three days. Chavan said, “We will take a decision within two to three days. My priority is that we must fight with all our might in all 288 seats whosoever is the aspirant. We will fight with our strength and keep our secular ideals strongly before the people in the state. We believe that our government will be re-elected for the fourth term and they will never side with the communal forces.” While taking on the BJP over the verdict of the by-poll results in various states, he said, “The by-poll results have shown that people are not satisfied with 100 days of governance of the BJP-led NDA. People have realised their mistakes and these results are a reflection of it.” According to sources, the impasse between the Congress and NCP over seat-sharing is brewing with the latter not willing to contest in less than 136 seats. ith state Assembly elections drawing closer, the blamegame has already begun between the local political leadership in Mira-Bhayandar. Hitting back at former municipal commissioner-turned-BJP leader Shivmurthi Naik for levelling “baseless” charges against the ruling NCP-Congress alliance in Mira-Bhayandar, NCP corporator Bhagwati Sharma and his Congress counter-part Jubier Inamdar stated that the officer was desperately trying to prove his “utility” to his political master. Reacting strongly over Naik’s accusations on the ruling governance over their so-called bungling on the issue of creating 24 theme parks at strategic locations across the twin-city, the ruling governance raised a serious question mark on the silent role adopted by Naik during his tenure as municipal commissioner. “In fact it was because of the civic administration that the twin-city has been deprived of the parks,” alleged Sharma who also said that since then they had been regularly following-up on the issue.

Shivmurthi Naik Moreover, realising his folly, Naik went on to pass an official order on May 20, 2011 stating that the said resolution could not be implemented before completely acquiring the plots earmarked with reservations for various public amenities including playgrounds, gardens and markets. “This has exposed the double standards of the 'Babu-turned-Neta',” Inamdaar said. However, thanks to the blamegame, the citizens of the twin-city are still deprived of their right to open spaces amidst the concrete jungles.

HEN China has decided to invest as much as 100 billion dollars in India, will the border dispute end? Will the frequent intrusions by Chinese soldiers into India territory stop? Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to have serious talks in this regard with the Chinese president. China cannot but be aware that it cannot carry out hostile acts against India when it invests billions in Indian projects. There has been tension along the border for years and assurances from Chinese top leaders that intrusions would stop and there would be peaceful discussions over disputed territories. The Chinese, however, have carried out many operations, construction of railway lines and resorted to war-like activities. Have the Chinese changed their policy? Will the Chinese President Xi Jinping finally change course and take steps to end the border dispute? Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been successful in conducting many agreements with China for the development of the country. Quite a few files will be signed and projects funded by China in different parts of the country will start. Cooperation and peace will benefit both countries and in India it can be expected that there will be huge industrial growth.

NLY a few weeks ago, I had observed in the same column that the honeymoon period of the newly-elected Narendra Modi government is over and now it would have to face the harsh reality. Little did I know that my prediction would be proved so true and that the reality would be really so harsh and equally cruel. The pointer is the results of Assembly byelections for 33 seats in many states, including Narendra Modi’s own home state – Gujarat. The results came as a rude shock for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in general and Modi in particular, who was camping in Ahmedabad to receive the visiting Chinese President XI Jinping and also to celebrate his 64th birthday, his first after occupying the highest office of the Indian political system. Even as the verdict for three Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh was on predicted lines, Assembly seats were a shocker not only to the BJP but to Congress and Samajwadi Party too, which emerged as winners.

round of by-elections too. The defeat of BJP in this week’s by-elections is even more significant as most of the seats for which by-elections were conducted hadfallen vacant due to resignation of BJP MLAs who had won May 2014 Lok Sabha polls. It means, the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) actually snatched the seats from the BJP and thus reduced its tally in various state Assemblies. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, BJP had won all Lok Sabha seats in May, while in UP it registered a mammoth victory of grabbing a lion's share of 72 out of 80 seats. On this backdrop the present winning tally of the party looks

Worst drubbing For the BJP, the worst drubbing it received was in UP, where the party could win only three seats out of 11 in the by-elections. In Rajasthan, the party won only a single seat out of four, while in Gujarat, BJP had to concede three seats to Congress. The defeat of BJP, seen in the light of the massive Lok Sabha win only three and half months back, raises some pertinent questions about the stability and ability of the newly-emerged national supremo Narendra Modi. No doubt, having won 284 seats in Lok Sabha, the government at the Centre will remain stable till 2019, unless there is unforeseen development during the period. Thanks to the provisions of the Anti-Defection Act, that crossing of floor in the 16th Lok Sabha is ruled out. But the numerical strength does not necessarily ensure political stability. In 1984, then Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, riding on the sympathy wave following the killing of Indira Gandhi, won a huge majority winning 414 seats in the then Lok Sabha. However, his government is termed as the most unstable government in Indian history. Similarly, Modi cannot afford to sit back and relax only because he has enough number of MPs to save the government. This is the second time after Lok Sabha elections that BJP suffered a big humiliation, the first time being the by-elections in Bihar and Karnataka, where BJP succumbed to the changed equations and mindset of the electorate. Not learning a lesson from this result, BJP was caught napping during the fresh

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut too weak and meagre. To rub salt in the wound, the SP wrests an Assembly segment in Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency that Modi had won with a huge margin against Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Why did this happen? Does this mean that people in India, particularly in important states like UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Bihar are sick and tired or disillusioned about the Modi rule in the last 100 days? Or is it that the people in the government, who are at the helm of the affairs, have failed to reach out to people and narrate their version of undertaking pro-people measures, or that the Congress is successful in overcoming the initial defeatist mood. Apart from these obvious reasons, there are many reasons for this humiliating defeat of Modi and the BJP. The first and foremost reason is that unlike Lok Sabha election, when Modi himself was running the campaign single-handed and had undertaken tours of the country across its length and breadth, the absence of Modi magic in the campaign was a key reason for BJP’s lacklustre show. It also proved that BJP has become a single-pillar tent. Since the pillar was not present to make the tent stand, the campaign never stands up on its own.

The quest for power — is it worthwhile? M

AN shows inclination to gain power in any way whatever. Every person strives throughout life to gain power. The reason is that the soul strives to exist against the invasion of life, because life's conditions seem to sweep away everything that has no strength. When the leaf has lost its strength it falls from the tree. When the flower has lost its strength it is thrown away. Naturally the soul wishes to keep its strength. Therefore every individual seeks for power. But the mistake lies in the fact that however much power a man may have, it is limited. With the increase

of power there comes a time when the man sees that another power can be greater than the one he possesses. This limitation makes man suffer. He becomes disappointed. Besides when one looks at the power that man

MATTER & SPIRIT possesses, the power of the world, what is it? Powerful nations, which were built thousands of years ago, can be crushed in a very short time. Then what is their power? If there is any power it is the hidden power, the

In addition, Modi’s close confidant and associate, Amit Shah, had also chosen to maintain a distance from the campaign. As a result, the campaign in UP was leaderless and thus directionless. To worsen the situation, the chief of BJP’s campaign Adityanath, who is a five-time MP, evoked ‘Love-Jihad’ controversy, leaving behind the schemes that Modi government had undertaken for the betterment of UP and also the misrule of the Akhilesh Yadav government in the two and half years. The 'Love-Jihad' campaign backfired and BJP lost seats. Hate speeches delivered by Adityanath from BJP platform received national publicity. Adityanath had the intention of creating polarization of votes in favour of BJP. However, it did not happen. Instead, young and educated voters turned their back on the party. One reason for the success of BJP in Lok Sabha election was that Amit Shah had successfully split the anti-BJP vote into SP and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). This time, Congress and SP managed to keep Mayawati out of fray. In the absence of BSP candidates, the anti-BJP votes consolidated the SP stand.

Vasundhara Raje In Rajasthan, it was the arrogance of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and her ministers that created a rift between leaders and workers of the party. On the other hand, in Congress, Sachin Pilot made relentless efforts and visited every nook and corner of all four constituencies, where by-elections were held. This effort resulted in a rich yield. It may be recalled that in the previous regime of Vasundhara Raje in Rajasthan, the party was broken into factions. In turn it lost the state, also Lok Sabha seats to Ashok Gehlot of Congress. The only silver lining in the debacle of BJP is West Bengal, where BJP has finally got entry into State Assembly winning a seat in the by-polls. The by-poll results will have direct and and snowballing impact on the prospects of State Assemblies of Maharashtra and Haryana in the ensuing elections on October 15. If the BJP and Shiv Sena, the oldest partners of the alliance, fail to forge a formula in the next couple of days, the election would not be as easy as it was seen a week ago. In short, the results of the by-polls have raised a flag indicating hurricane in Maharashtra too. It means, the sailors should remain on alert to face any adversity. There could be huge waves and blowing winds. Such climate results in hailstorms in the sea and force boats and ships to capsize. @BharatkumarRaut almighty power. And by getting in touch with that power one begins to draw from it all the power that is needed. The secret of all the miracles and phenomena of the sages and masters is to be seen in the power that they are able to draw from within. There are faqirs and dervishes who practice jumping into the fire or cutting their body and healing it instantly. But there exists a power even greater than that. Those who can really do such things do not do them openly. But at the same time there is this power which gives proof that spirit has power over matter, though spirit may be buried under matter for some time – which makes one powerless. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

THIS refers to the edit-piece 'Has Modi magic vanished?' (ADC, September 17) which states, "the bypoll results show that the Modi magic has vanished". In fact if one looks back at the Lok Sabha polls objectively, it will be clear that the overwhelming verdict in favour of the Lotus party was entirely due to Mohan Bhagwat's magic. Here was a vastly experienced nationalist who had the wisdom to pitchfork on the Gujarat CM, a Sangh loyalist of four decades, whom he found to be a free politician without familiy and so the most suitable to carry out his agenda of bringing about a quantum change in the country. And the media, true to the dictum 'the media maketh (or breaketh)', the hyped campaign as never before to prove the Sangh supremo to be a veritable 'Chanakya'. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

ALL the successive bye-elections, whether to the Lok Sabha or to any state Assemblies, have shown a distinctly downward trend in the fortunes of the BJP since its impressive victory in the general elections of April/May 2014. The secular brigade may now be encouraged to demand the resignation of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and ask them to seek a fresh mandate. They can even go to the extent of leading a joint delegation to the President on the issue. Though the Saffron front is enjoying a simple

Death of the wave

MODI WAVE FROM MOHAN MAGIC: Mohan Bhagwat had the wisdom to pitchfork on the Gujarat CM, a Sangh loyalist of four decades, whom he found to be a free politician without the burden of family and so the most suitable to carry out his agenda of bringing about a quantum change in the country. ISN'T it ironic that a few days ago, the BJP went gaga over their students' wing ABVP's sweep of the Delhi university elections, attributing it to the Modi wave, but they don't give him the credit for the pathetic showing in the byeelections, after the counting on September 16. One doesn't know — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali about when those ‘acche din’ will come for the country but certainly not many of them are in sight for

majority of its own in the Lower House, its popularity is clearly on the decline. The Modi-led government must now do some soulsearching and come out with effective remedial measures to restore the confidence shown by the electorate in voting them to power at New Delhi.

Secret alliances uprooting BJP

In defence of Omar THE mud being flung at Omar Abdullah is unfair. He had asked people to vacate, but they were reluctant to leave their homes. Should the CM have set an example by leaving? How would that be interpreted? If this was Ahmedabad when Narendra Modi was CM, even he could have done nothing without the armed forces. In 2005, the rain in Mumbai reached 944 mm and the state HQ, police HQ, control rooms, municipal HQ were all unaffected, yet the administration floundered in meetings while the city drowned. In the Srinagar floods, the state capital and state machinery were literally washed away. Where Omar Abdullah failed is in what a CM should be doing and saying in times like these. His praise for the armed forces was too late and was forced. But he has

MAYAWATI'S refusal to contest the by-elections has definitely propelled the Samajwadi Party to register wins in as many as 9 out of 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh. The setup was as good as an alliance because it ultimately had the same effect of an alliance, ensuring that the votes opposing BJP were not divided to BJP's advantage. In Bihar, Lalu and Nitish were aligned and won against the BJP. It was surprising that the people of Bihar opted to vote in favour of Lalu despite his conviction in the fodder scam and his spoils of Bihar in 15 long years, in particular in the law and order domain. The common people should not succumb to such unethical alliances facilitating the wins of persons like Lalu and Mulayam that are harmful to the nation's progress and unity. — T M Uday Shankar, via email

Sad end to BJP-SS alliance THE long, cordial alliance between the BJP and Shiv Sena is coming to an abrupt end after some distasteful statements uttered by Uddhav Thackeray. How could Uddhav’s conscience allow him to utter such unpalatable statements against an able Prime Minister? He should understand that what Modi and his team have done in 100 days, no PM has ever done. Isn’t it a big deal that the foreign countries he has visited have received him with the highest respect. China and Japan going all out to help the country speaks volumes of Modi’s attitude. Thackeray still has to learn the grassroots of politics. THE result of the 3 Lok Sabha and 33 Assembly by-polls across 10 states in which the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress have won major seats proves that the Narendra Modi's NDA government has failed to fulfill their promises which they made during the Lok Sabha elections. The people have rejected the BJP in the by-polls to teach them a very strong lesson that they cannot fool with the people by misguiding them with false promises. With the Assembly elections due next month in Maharashtra and Haryana, the chances of BJP overthrowing the Congress in these two states looks very dim. Gou-rakshaks and -bakshaks I refer to the exhaustive edit piece, 'Giving communal colour to the Kashmiri Pandits' plight', (ADC, September 16). The thoughts expressed here appear to have emanated from a perfectly secular mindset. Can the learned writer tell us who has forced the over three lakh Pandits out of their own homeland? Are the perpetrators Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Jews or Parsees? Why are there hordes of non-Muslims leaving Bangladesh and Pakistan, and seeking refuge in India? Who is making their lives miserable in these OF theocratic countries? All politicians same colour With reference to your article 'Ajit Pawar will be jailed, says Tawade' (ADC, September 16), BJP leader Vinod Tawde's statement is typical of a meaningless spout, especially while the elections approach. The reality is no member of the Indian political class, irrespective of party affiliation, is seriously interested in sending one of his tribe to prison for any reason. This is because the accusing politicians are probably guilty of the same transgressions as those they condemn. Let's face it, the number of politicians who have not taken advantage of their official positions to feather their own nests can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The only reason Suresh Kalmadi and A Raja went to jail is because of media and public pressure. Of bullet trains and locals APROPOS 'Chinese transport delegation visits CST' (ADC, September 16), it is heartening to learn that India's neighbour is taking interest in infrastructure projects by investing of US $300 billion. In respect to the bullet train project however, envisaged to be operational between Mumbai & Ahmedabad, I have certain reservations. We all are aware that the world's first bullet train was built and run successfully by Japan, and they they are considered the world authority on it. It is prudent that the Indian PM certainly considers China for any other project for which they have shown so much interest, and also for being a giant Asian nation of size and capability. But for the bullet train, India should entrust only Japan to install and render it operational, to ascertain its quality followed by the durability and safety of this high-tech speedy transit system.

W

ith the arrest of six robbers, including a woman, police on Wednesday claimed to have busted an inter-state criminal gang which daringly carried out daylight break-ins in flats at city's high-rises without security guards and CCTVs. The arrest of Hajeed Ali Baig (41), the kingpin of the gang, along with a firearm from suburban Goregaon on September 3 led investigators to uncover its activities, police told PTI. By busting the gang, the police claimed to have solved 27 burglary cases reported in Mumbai. The

group's role is suspected in another 23 cases in the city and as many as 20 house break-ins reported in other parts of Maharashtra besides Gujarat, Goa and Silvassa, police said. Gold ornaments weighing 2.18 kg, valued at about Rs 54.40 lakh, were recovered from the gang members. Baig, who had been leading a luxurious life, even started a jewellery business in a bid to dispose the stolen booty to jewellers at Zaveri Bazaar, said Sadanand Date, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). Baig's jewellery business partner Vinod Kumar Sanghvi (38) and his

sister Mehrunisa Sayyed (42), who were part of the racket, were apprehended on September 7 and 16 respectively, he said. On September 13, the custody of three other members of the gang -Kailash More (32), Deepak Mishra (22) and Sanjay Kamade (25) who were jailed in Dhule in North Maharashtra - was taken by Crime Branch for questioning, he added. "Baig was found to be involved in over 122 house break-in cases in Pune before 2008. He had been then arrested and imprisoned. He walked out of jail in 2012 after completing

his sentence," Date said. Despite serving a jail term, Baig remained in crime and this time targeted Mumbai, he said. Ganging up with the five others, including his elder sister, Baig surveyed various buildings in the city in his car and zeroed on those without CCTVs or security guards. Explaining the modus operandi, Date said "the gang members would go to the top floor of a building and then knock the door of each house. If there was no response from inside, they would break-in and make off with valuables."

It’s a wrap! Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

Shirley Mistry speaks to Kalyani Rao, the author of recently released book, Bubble Wrap, which traces the bond of friendship and also talks about several pertinent cultural and social issues. Kalyani opens up about her book, the things that inspire her and her love of travel

The title of your book, Bubble Wrap, is rather interesting, given that the tale talks about survival. Could you tell us why you settled on this particular name? I wanted to name the book after an everyday item, so that my readers could connect with it easily. The story that I wanted to share through the book is more than just about incidents that we read about in newspapers, and comfortably assume that they only happen elsewhere. I reckon we have evidence of such ordeals taking place in our own neighbourhoods or the cities that we live in. So, the title, Bubble Wrap, sums up the spirit of friendship and survival perfectly for me.

>> The title, Bubble Wrap came into existence because Kalyani Rao wanted her readers to relate to it

Your book speaks very strongly about issues that are prevalent in our society, including child marriage, education for a girl child and the act of women submitting to male dominance being de rigueur. Tell us why you chose these themes. Well, I wanted to highlight the s tory of the other India, where modern technology has reached us, but medieval and archaic mindsets still persist. This other India not only exists in small towns or villages of our country, but also in bustling metropolitan cities. Women are the biggest victims of these mindsets. I think that despite all the media attention, street demonstrations and long debates on national television, the desired change is still extremely far away. It’s time to walk the talk and if stories such as Bubble Wrap can contribute to that change, even in the smallest of ways, I think that it will be a source of great motivation for young authors like me to tell stories that are aimed at the betterment of society. Personally, I have come across several victims of patriarchal atrocities, who have chosen to silently bear the suffering. So, in a way, I chose to tell their story. The book traces the journey of two young girls, almost children, dealing with issues far beyond their years. What preparation and research did you have to do to down a story from an oppressed 12year-old’s point of view, without losing the innocence of the character and making Gudiya and Krishna (the protagonists in the story) sound older than they are? I gues s when children face adversity, they grow up faster. However, childhood banter still persists. It was quite a challenge for me to write the story from a 12-year-old girl’s perspective. I was inspired by my interaction with some children who live on the streets in Mumbai. You also love to travel and consider it to be a great teacher. Was travelling involved in the creative process of this book as well? I am a backpacker and I believe that travelling is one of the best and quickest ways to build character. It was a trip to the states of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat that sowed the seeds of the story of Bubble Wrap in my mind.

Tell us about some interesting things that you’ve observed or that have struck you on your travels. Here I would like to quote Susan Sontag, “Maybe I have an Attention Surplus Disorder.” I have always enjoyed the art of observing things and people, and I believe that travelling provides the best platform to do so. I like to observe the mundane things that people do, every day, in various parts of the world, market places and at cafés and eateries. Understandably, your love for travel gave birth to your theme-based travel company, called Untouristy India. Tell us a little bit about your venture. Untouristy India is a small project where we try to reach out to people who would like to experience India in their own individualistic way. For example, if you are a musician and you would like to experience and understand Indian music, we would like to facilitate that for you.

In a lIne n Your favourite quote: “Our responsibility begins with our imagination.” — Haruki Murakami n Your favourite book: I have several favourite books, including Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. n Your favourite author: Haruki Murakami n Your favourite genre of books: Literary fiction n Favourite travel destination: Europe n One destination that you’d like to visit: Africa n Most breathtaking sight you’ve seen: I have been fortunate enough to view several breathtaking sights. However, one view that still strikes me is the view from my hotel in Jodhpur, where I could see the numerous blue coloured houses, and in the back drop, was a fort and the dessert. Adding to the charm was the sunset, spreading an orange and purple glow all over.

We love Deepika — because she always looks so well turned out! We’re not fans of the matchy-matchy shoes, but the pencil skirt and geometric print top are a great combination. We know cut-out shoulders are in style, but we weren’t given the ‘slip into your favourite cushion cover’ memo. The skirt on this dress is horrendous, and bunched up at all the wrong parts! The colour of the top and the patterned waist are pretty, but neither that nor Esha’s gorgeous curls can salvage this.

Avoid eye-catching clothes

From prints to polka-dots, if there are too many design elements on your dress, you will end up with a very busy look. Your pearls — whether on your necklaces, earrings or bracelets, should get all the attention and so, pair them with solid tops and dresses. Also remember to avoid wearing them with white, which will do absolutely nothing to highlight your pearls.

strEAx sErum

in your hair

Think of a large daisy on your hairband — isn't it a cute accessory? Use the same concept with pearls; get a wide hair band with two-three giant pearls stuck to it. Pair this with a dress or top that is a similar shade as your hairband. It is important that your hair is loose and well-brushed to perfectly channel the look.

Go blue

This might be a little too specific, but trust us, it will be an amazing look. Wear a formal blue top, pair it with an orange or red skirt/ shorts along with white strap-ons or heels. As far as your pearls are concerned, get a pearlbased graduated necklace that features a simple, golden chain. This is a classic look that will never go out of style.

cuff it

Pulling off pearl cuffs can be a bit tricky, but if you avoid wearing casual tops and jeans and pick bright dresses, you can avoid committing a faux pas. For formal settings, you

can wear a black dress with black footwear, while for casual evenings, colours such as yellow, orange, red and blue will perfectly complement your oversized pearl cuffs.

The new hair serum by Streax contains the benefits of argan oil and promises to work on all hair types, dry and frizzy in particular. Since I have dry hair, I decided to try this out. The serum is non-greasy, so applying it on my hair was not a tedious task. I applied it to damp hair and after a while, my hair did become softer. However, the difference is not instant, so don’t expect immediate results. I apply the serum twice a week, which seems to be working really well for my hair. Moreover, it doesn’t have an overpowering smell either, making it a great buy! where All retail outlets across the city price 345 for 45ml rating ****

Scientifically

confident

From helping you effectively manage work, to creating the image of an efficient employee, confidence is a virtue that is extremely important in the professional world. So, Dev Goswami tells you about a few research-fuelled ways to help build your confidence

W

hether it is at a work meeting or when you’re working on an assignment, your confidence levels can make or break your career. You might think we are exaggerating, but the fact is that it’s important to believe in yourself and your abilities in order to succeed. Some of the most successful women are those who are confident about their ability to perform a task, and to execute it well. While being good at your job is an easy way to build confidence, there are several other tips and tricks, backed by various studies, that can help you feel more self-assured. Take a look:

stanD tall We mean this literally! Standing tall is one of the best ways to appear confident and in command of yourself. According to a 2011 study, published in the journal, Psychological Science, standing tall, with an expansive posture, can also help you feel more powerful and increase your ability to take both well-calculated and spontaneous risks. Other studies have shown that a straight-backed posture can increase the production of testosterone, which among other things, boosts your confidence. So remember, standing tall will not only make you appear confident, it will also help you feel powerful.

turn up tHE bass Think of your favourite, corporate-themed films. Now, we are sure that there will be at least one power-walk scene, with the protagonist oozing confidence. Think of that scene and then think about the background score — it will usually be a bass-heavy tune. The reason for this is that such songs leave you feeling pumped up and powerful. And no, we aren’t making that up. A study, published by the The Society For Personality And Social Psychology, found that listening to high-power songs makes you feel more confident and powerful. The study recommended songs such as 50 Cent’s In Da Club, Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready For This. We can’t disagree there!

DrEss for succEss It is a well-known fact that if you’re well-groomed, you will be taken more seriously than if you were to show up at a meeting in, lets say, faded jeans and a wrinkled t-shirt. But, your attire can have a more profound effect, if you

were to believe a study that was conducted by the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. The study asked a group of participants to wear scientist or doctor coats and take a test. Those who wore the coats performed better than those who didn’t. The study suggests that wearing clothes that we can associate with emotions such as power, confidence and intelligence, can actually help us feel those emotions. However, there is a rider that goes with this: you will only feel confident in a suit, if you actually associate suits with confidence. If you think of suits as pretentious, you won’t benefit from wearing one.

lEarn a nEW languagE No, this is not because you expect to be sent on an international assignment, but because it can help you feel more satisfied and confident. Various studies have shown that picking up a new hobby is not only a healthy way to de-stress, it can also help boost your self-esteem and make you feel more confident about your abilities.

ExpErt spEak

We spoke to founder and principle image consultant at DreamWeavers-Image Management Studio, Devanshi Gandhi, to get her opinion and give us some of her own tips. She says, “These work, but what may work for others, may not work for you. So, adopting them is an individual choice.” positive self talk: This is a powerful tool that can help just about anybody. Self-talk can be very good, or very bad! The trick is to always say positive things to ourselves, irrespective of what is going on around us. It may not be simple at first, but over time, it’s easy to achieve. Dress well: This is a quick mood lifter. When you dress well, you feel good; when you feel good, it reflects in your behaviour; which in turn fetches you compliments and makes you feel great!! Eat right: Not eating enough nutrients can make you feel low. Eating foods which contain vitamin B-Complex can make a huge difference. They let out the ‘feel good’ hormones in your body, which can immediately lift up your mood and boost your confidence.

Party Perfect Party favours are cute gifts that you can hand over to your guests at the end of a party. Shirley Mistry tells you how to make a few pretty, inexpensive, DIY favours

P

arty favours are a great way to make your house party truly memorable. They show that you care and are a great way to ensure that your guests remember the fun that they had, long after the party ends. Take a look at some easy, DIY party favours.

Who doesn’t love popcorn?! This party favour is perfect! Make small batches of flavoured popcorn — you can pick from traditional flavours such as cheese and butter as well as innovative ones such as chocolate and jalapeños. Fill individual cake boxes with the popcorn and write a personalised message for each guest. You can also break up a bar of chocolate and add it to each box for a fun snack that your guests can devour on their way back home.

Say cheeSe! Again, extremely easy to put together, this party favour is one of our favourites. Buy or borrow a polaroid camera and click pictures at the party, ensuring that each guest at the party has been snapped. Before everyone leaves, write them a note on the back of the pictures — you can also pen down your favourite memory together. Attach the photographs to small wooden pegs with their names on it, and give it to your guests as they leave.

Next, use a corrugated sheet to create a divider in the box. Fill one side with your favourite tea bags and the other side with biscotti, or tea-infused cookies.

infuSed SugarS All you need is a few mason jars (old jam jars work well too), some fine sugar, herbs and fruits to make this unique gift. Fill a jar with the sugar until it is almost ¾th full, and add a herb, spice or fruit to it. We recommend options such as sprigs of lavender, orange peel, vanilla beans and lemon zest. Remember to make these flavoured sugars 2-3 days in advance for the flavours to really infuse the sugar. Write an easy recipe that uses the infused sugar on small tags and tie it to the jar with a cord or a piece of ribbon.

Loving the Lust You might be falling in love with your boyfriend, but are you sure that the feeling is mutual? If you’re too emotionally attached, you might not be able to distinguish between love and lust. Dev Goswami helps you see the subtle differences

T

he difference between love and lust is often so subtle that you may miss the signs of one or the other. What’s even harder, is figuring out whether your partner is in love with you, or just physically attracted to you. And asking him to tell you, won’t solve your problem! So, its up to you to recognise the difference between love and lust. The following tips will go a long way in helping you separate the two emotions.

ANimAl AttrActioN When your relationship is all about the physical connect between you and your partner, it means that your partner is probably just physically attracted to you. You don’t go out to watch films together, you can’t remember ever being on a date and don’t even share the same set of friends. Don’t get us wrong, physical attraction is an important pre-requisite for a healthy relationship, but you need to accept that sometimes, sex is just sex and nothing more.

EmotioNAl DiScoNNEct If you feel like there is a vast emotional chasm between you and your partner, you should question what kind of a relationship you are actually in. The lack of an emotional connection between you and your partner means that he isn’t in love with you. This is a slightly nuanced argument though — if the lack of emotional connect is bothering you, it means that your relationship is a one-way street, where you want love and affection, while your man is only interested in the physical aspect of your relationship. However, if you don’t care about the emotional connect either, it probably means that you are just lusting after him, as well.

You’rE Not friENDS You want to talk about how your day was and rant about your idiotic friend, but you can’t do it with your partner, because he is either unavailable to talk, or is simply not interested in your life. If this situation

sounds familiar, your partner has a case of lust and not love. Remember that if he is in love with you or is falling in love with you, even the most emotionally distant man will take an interest in your life, friends and your emotions.

coNvErSAtioN couNtS This is one of the reasons it is so difficult to differentiate between love and lust. Sometimes, you’ll find that your partner is available to talk about everything under the sun and at other times, he won’t even respond to your messages or emails. However, this has got nothing to do with how busy he is and has got everything to do with whether he is in the mood... physically at least. To recognise this sign, you need to observe your conversations closely — if you find that every time you have, what you think is, a deep conversation, it ends up with the two of you being intimate, or even just talking about being intimate, you need to talk to your man about what each of you expect from the relationship. >> Is your relationship all about the physical attraction and doesn’t involve emotional bonding? It’s a sign that your partner is not in love with you

He is absolutely the loveliest person! He comes from a very wealthy, posh family... But you would never know (as I didn’t) till I went over to his house to study last week. To tell you the truth, I felt a little overwhelmed at how rich he is. Then I met his posh mother... She smelled nice and is so nice too!

She then invited me to this dinner party she is having next weekend... Now when my parents have a dinner party, it means punch, chips and dip and biryani...

We aren’t very posh, but our parties are always comfortable and fun... I said I would love to go for the dinner party at his house... But suddenly I am panicking. I know nothing about formal sit-down dinners!

« Dear grace, i have a probLem... Dear Grace,

My best friend is cheating on her boyfriend. Not only am I completely against and disturbed by her behaviour, I know that sooner or later, this is going to affect her relationship and eventually, her. I think that she’s currently experiencing a thrill that is blinding her from the consequences of her actions. I care about her, but I am worried that if I bring this up, she will accuse me of judging her and it will drive us apart.

Should I stay silent or is there a way to make her see the error of her ways? — Nihar Shah, Dadar Dear Nihar, We would usually advise you to let her live life on her own terms, and figure out the situation by herself. However, as her best friend, you have a responsibility to help her see when she might be going wrong. The best way to deal with this situation, would be to talk to her — but

just once! Ask her to set aside some time for you and then tell her about your misgivings. Make sure that she understands where you’re coming from, and that you’re having this talk because you care about her. Once you’ve had the conversation, don’t ever bring it up again unless she’s the one who wants to talk about it, and let her make her own decisions going forward. “And to date, I have only used a single fork to eat! Should I fake an illness and skip the dinner? Please help! — Opposite of Posh a) Ask your boyfriend what to expect. Confess you don’t know a fish fork from a soup spoon. Maybe he’ll teach you or maybe there is going to be biryani there as well! Relax! Have fun! b) The internet has articles and video tutorials on table etiquette. A basic rule of thumb is to either follow the host or use the cutlery starting from outside inwards. A small present or the hostess such as a box of chocolates or a nice book is also a nice gesture... c) Definitely fake an illness. Don’t go and embarras yourself. LAST WEEK: Ira should pick Option A: If he was older than you, would this even be a problem? Every relationship will have it’s unique set of ‘problems’. Age gaps are just one of them. Go for it! Oriental Insurance Company , which had repudiated claim for jewellery on the ground that the owner did not have its valuation certificate, has been asked to pay over Rs 18 lakh by a consumer forum, which said the question had to be raised at the time of issuing the policy. The New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, presided by C K Chaturvedi, asked The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd to pay Rs 18,25,520 to one Praveen Kumar Sharma, while holding it guilty of "deficiency in arbitrarily refusing the claim and denying its liability". The forum passed the order while noting that the policy covered all the risks for loss by accident or misfortune and did not exclude liability in case of not taking care of the lost items. "The Opposite Party (insurance company) cannot question loss which includes loss by misfortune as covered in policy... OP cannot, after loss, raise question of value of jewellery or valuation or source of purchase or fact of complainant having it or not," the forum said, adding the company was bound to reimburse insured sum only, irrespective of the present value of the jewellery/gold.

etirement fund manager, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) has said that it is not considering any proposal to invest a part of its huge corpus of around Rs 6 lakh crore in stock markets."We are not considering any proposal to invest in stock markets or equity at present," EPFO's Central Provident Fund Commissioner K K Jalan told PTI. He said this in response to media reports that EPFO has no alternative but to change its investment norms to invest in equity markets. Jalan said, "During the recent

meeting of the EPFO's trustees, proposed pattern of investment by Finance Ministry was discussed and the Board was not in favour of investing in equities and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)." However, the EPFO's apex decision making body, the Central Board of Trustees headed by the Labour Minister, had decided to recommend making the pattern more flexible to further increase the percentage of investment in government securities. The Finance Ministry has been pitching for EPFO funds to be invested in the equity markets to maximise their yields. However, fol-

lowing strong opposition from unions in view of the volatile nature of stocks, EPFO did not opt for equity investment. The Ministry had allowed the EPFO to invest up to 5 % of its funds in equity in 2005 and enhanced the limit to 15 % in 2008. A recent notification by the Labour Ministry allows the EPFO to invest up to 5 % of its funds in money market instruments, including units of mutual funds and equity-linked schemes regulated by SEBI. The EPFO has more than 5 crore subscribers across the country. It provided interest of 8.75 % on PF deposits in 2013-14.

Real Estate Bill Likely To Come Up In Winter Session By A Business Reporter

G

earing up to move the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013 for consideration in Rajya Sabha in the forthcoming Winter Session, the Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ministry has called a meeting of all concerned on September 19 to discuss the issue here. "We have convened a meeting of all stakeholders to seek their views and suggestions on the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013," said a senior ministry official. The bill is crucial for paving way for construction of a large number of affordable houses and is slated to come up in the Rajya Sabha during

the Winter Session of Parliament. Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Venkaiah Naidu yesterday discussed various aspects of the bill with the officials of the ministry, reports PTI. The NDA government has promised houses for all by 2022. Naidu emphasised that the bill, while seeking to promote housing activity, should aim at harmonising the concerns of consumers and real estate developers, rather than introducing strangulation in the name of regulation. The minister said the bill should promote transparency in disclosures by the developers with regard to all relevant information about real estate projects, through registration of projects with the proposed regulator.

Premium For Life Cover Under PMJDY Finalised By A Business Reporter

he Finance Minister in consultation with LIC has finalised arrangement for payment of premium towards life insurance cover under Jan Dhan scheme. It has been decided to set aside Rs 50 cr from Social Security Fund worth about Rs 1,800 cr managed by LIC, sources said. This would be a revolving fund and LIC would manage it, sources said, adding that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is likely to approve the arrangement soon. A Social Security Fund (SSF) was set up in 1988-89 for providing social security through group insurance scheme to the weaker and vulnerable sections of the society. The SSF is administered by LIC for meeting insurance requirements of the segment. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) one who opens account before January 26, 2015 would get Rs 30,000

life insurance cover. This benefit was added by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he launched the scheme on August 28. Under the scheme, banks have opened 3.02 cr accounts and mobilised about Rs 1,500 cr. As of September 8, 2014, 3.02 cr accounts have been opened, of which 1.89 cr are in rural areas and 1.13 cr are in urban areas. Banks have collected deposits of Rs 1,496.51 cr under the scheme so far. In order to spread financial inclusion, banks have been asked to open 7.5 cr accounts by January 26. PMJDY scheme envisages to provide one account to 15 cr unbanked households across the country in the first phase. For this, banks have been asked to set up camps from 8 am to 8 pm on every Saturday to facilitate account opening. Two helplines-- 1800-180111 and 1800-110-001 -- have been set up to answer queries .

Besides Naidu and ministry officials, representatives of the Ministries of Environment and Forests and Climate Change, Consumer Affairs, Civil Aviation and Culture would also attend the consultations on various related issues. Officials of Consumer Welfare Association, Federation of Apartment Owners Associations, Professional Associations like legal firms and management consultants, National Real Estate Development Council, and Council of Real Estate Developers Associations of India will also attend the meet. After this stakeholder consultations, Naidu would have a round-table of concerned ministers before firming up the official amendments to be moved, if required.

Policy Rate Likely To Remain Unchanged During FY15

Full-Fledged Economic Recovery Is Still Some Distance Away By A Business Reporter

“T

entative signs of strength are emerging in the Indian economy with GDP expanding at the fastest pace in Q1 FY15 since Q4 FY12, assisted by a sharp recovery in industrial growth and gradual improvement in services sector. Retail inflation is showing signs of moderation, staying below 8.0% for the third consecutive month in Aug-14, while the current account deficit remains contained driven primarily by contraction in the trade deficit. The government has announced several measures to improve the ease of doing business and there has been some progress in clearing and reviving stalled projects. That said, a full-fledged cyclical recovery is still some distance away and the current macro-scenario should be construed with some caution” says Dr. Arun Singh, Senior Economist Dun & Bradstreet India. Dr. Singh further adds that “on the WPI inflation front, there is a significant base effect at play, resulting in moderation of food prices and it will continue to do so in the forthcoming months as well. The battle against inflation will continue till supply-side issues are adequately addressed. RBI would thus keep its policy rate unchanged till the end of this fiscal year with a probable action visible only in early next financial year” he added. As regards D&B's forecast “Industrial production is expected to register a moderate growth owing to low base. The number of measures taken by the government to fast track manufacturing activity is likely to provide impetus to economic growth going forward. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP)

is estimated to have grown by 2.0%-2.5% during Aug-14”. On the price Scenario it believes “ Both the CPI and WPI inflation is likely to remain range bound during Sept-14. Global commodity prices in general have fallen due to weak demand and ample supply. While global crude oil prices have fallen significantly, geo-political tensions still prevails thereby raising inflationary expectations in the economy. Some revival in demand indicated by the increase in gross fixed capital formation and consumption expenditure, both private and government, is likely to provide some upward pressure to overall inflation”. D&B expects the CPI (combined) inflation to remain range-bound at 7.6%-7.8% during Sept-14. As regards Money & Finance; “ Yields in the gilts market is expected to remain range bound during the month of Sept-14. While fall in global crude oil prices and hopes of lower government borrowing during first half of FY15 is expected to support the market, corporate tax outflows is likely constraint liquidity in the banking system thereby impacting yields”. Given elevated inflationary expectations, D&B expects 15-91 day T-Bill yield to average at around 8.4%-8.6% and 10-year G-sec yield at around 8.5%-8.7% during Sept-14. On the External Sector, concerns of earlier than expected rate hike by the US Federal reserve and the consequent rise in the US treasury yields have led to appreciation in dollar. Unless a consensus emerges, rupee is likely to remain under pressure during the month of Sept-14. D&B expects the rupee to be around 60.50-60.70 per US$ during Sept-14.

Hally Shah gets candid

25

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

TV TATTLE Modi prepares for first address before the UN

As he prepares for his first address before the world stage of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will sit down with Fareed Zakaria for a global exclusive and wideranging interview to air on CNN’s FAREED ZAKARIA GPS, international affairs programme on Sunday, September 21. The interview was taped on Saturday, September 13 at the Prime Minister’s official residence at 7 Race Course Road in New Delhi, and marks Modi’s first since he was elected Prime Minister of India. Prime Minister Modi discusses India’s economic growth, relations with China and the United States, terrorism and a whole lot more.

Eighteen-year-old Hally Shah, star of ‘Khushiyon Ki Gullak Aashi’ on Sony Pal, has also been seen in ‘Gulaal’ on Star Plus, ‘Alaxmi – Humari Super Bahu’ on Life OK and ‘Khelti Hai Zindagi Aankh Micholi’ on Zee TV. We had a candid conversation about her new role in her new show By Sandeep Hattangadi

What made you agree to do 'Khushiyon Ki Gullak Aashi'? I'll say it was the character, Aashi. The moment I read the script I was in love with the character. The story revolves around the life of 22-year-old Aashi, a cheerful girl who spreads happiness around her but is a lonely within. Aashi always longed for her parent’s attention and love, but they have always been busy pursuing their career and work. Circumstances have made Aashi a mature and emotional person for her age. She has learnt to make decisions on her own at the tender age of 20. And one of her decision turns out to be so revolutionary that it shakes the very social and belief system of our land. Can a girl adopt a new set of parents when her biological parents have failed to perform their duties and roles? To fulfill her vision, she faces much opposition, but she is not bothered about them. She wants to go ahead and do what she believes in. How did you prepare for your character? I didn't have to do much work because I am somewhat like Aashi. When I come on the set, I enter the character. I am Aashi, which I think is a great thing for me.

MARRIAGE OVER SOAP OPERAS FOR JAY SONI

Talk to me about the people in the show. What are they like? Just amazing. We all are a family and have a great team work. There is always a positive vibe on the set and we all enjoy a lot on our, on set as well as off set. 'Khushiyon Ki Gullak Aashi' is a never-seen-before concept in the history of Indian etlevision. Naren Kumar and Susheel Pandey of 'Miloni Moviez' recently finished an extensive outdoor schedule at reallocations in Jabalpur, capturing the essence of the city and its local flavour. TV’s popular chocolate boy Naman Shaw, Abhishek Sharma, Rohitash Gaur and Nishigandha Wad are also part of this show directed by Pratik Shah and written by Bhavna Vyas.

The newlywed actor says soaps are too time-consuming right now

P

What kind of shows do you like to watch? Personally I don't watch any daily soap except my own, but I like watching reality shows or else I switch to any music channel. Are you open to reality shows or anchoring shows? Yes, I would love to be a part of any dancing or singing reality show, but not something like 'Big Boss'. And the directors on your wishlist? I want to work with Siddharth Sen Gupta and Lalit Mohan again. I have worked with them in my previous shows and would love to work with them again.

opular TV actor Jay Soni, who tied the knot with longtime partner Pooja Shah, says he is not taking up any daily soap for sometime as he wants to enjoy his married life. The 'Sasural Genda Phool' actor married Pooja on February 18 this year. "I am spending time with Pooja these days. I don't want to get back to the daily soaps for a while because it consumes a lot of time. I am getting offers but I am not doing them. For the timebeing, I want to do something which should be unique and less time consuming," Jay told PTI. The actor, who was last seen on 'Sanskaar – Dharohar Apnon Ki', is returning back to hosting with new game show 'Dil Hai Chotasa Chotisi Aasha'. The show features only women contestants. "I took up this show because I found the concept different and interesting. It's an all-women show and I have immense respect for them. I feel lucky that through me they are getting their wishes fulfilled," Jay said. On the Sony Pal's show, these female contestants can earn money by simply giving the right answers to questions posed to them. Jay would also be teaming up with his 'Sasural Genda Phool' co-star Ragini Khanna, who will also be hosting the show with him. Jay says the experience of collaborating with her again was 'superb'. "As it was a reality show, we did not need any onscreen chemistry and we could just be ourselves in it. It was a superb experience to work with her again," he added.

‘Satyameva Jayate’ live

Film star Aamir Khan in a conclave said that, “I am not a social worker but a creative person. I am an entertainer. That’s my primary job.” Aamir Khan said that he uses his power in the right manner. On Season 3 of 'Satyameva Jayate', Aamir says, “It will be aired live. You can talk to us, ask questions and even give your suggestions. The five issues that came up in the show in the earlier season, I took them to the Prime Minister. We had never thought that our case will be heard this way.”

Fire fighting actors

During the shoot of the upcoming sangeet celebrations of Siddharth (Ravi Dubey) and Roshni (Nia Sharma) on Zee TV’s popular primetime drama 'Jamai Raja', amidst the naach gaana, Roshni gets trapped in a room that catches fire and Sid comes to her rescue and manages to save her in the nick of time! Ravi and Nia surprised everyone when they refused to use body doubles and did the full stunt by themselves as they wanted to make it more real!

Comic debut

Pakistan's Mohib Mirza is all set to make his debut on Indian television with Zindagi’s upcoming show 'Yeh Shaadi Nahi Ho Sakti'. This show is a light-hearted comedy with madness personified in the context of marriage. Mohib plays the role of a funny, talented and cheerful boy, Sikander. His wife Aamina Sheikh’s performances as Aiman in 'Maat' and Neha in 'Ishq Gumshuda' have left an everlasting impression in the minds of Indian viewers. Speaking on Mohib’s debut, Aamina exclaims, “I look forward to all of his versatile characters being showcased on the channel!”

Celebrating 1,500 episodes

Cult comic daily ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Oltah Chashmah’ is completing a record 1,500 episodes. The Gokuldham society members decided to celebrate the day in its usual unusual manner and got onto an open bus and went for a complete mastiwaala Mumbai darshan. Says producer Asit Kumar Modi, “Gokuldham Society is a reflection of various societies in the city. So to salute the cosmopolitan all-accepting spirit of Mumbai and its people, we adopted this very unique and innovative way of celebrating.”

Brain games in new series

F

or Jason Silva, getting into the mind of others offers fascinating insight, and through his popular TV show 'Brain Games' the filmmaker explores different perspectives of the brain. Silva, who calls himself a performance philsopher, is returning with 10 new episodes of his show that have begun airing on National Geographic from September 15. "All the episodes this time will make sure that we reach a

different level and bring in a new twist to the games," says Silva. Silva gets inside one's head and shows you what is going on with an intricate series of interactive experiments designed to "mess with mind". "It is tremendous fun that makes science entertaining, it turns your mind's eye inwards for a fascinating journey into the three and a half pounds of tissue that makes you...you," Silva says. The new episodes have titles such

as 'superstitions', 'addiction', 'food for thought', 'risky', etc. "The best of all would be the 'challenge between the sexes', when it comes to conventional thinking about men and women's brains, cliches tend to take over. Women are seen to be more emotional, while men think more practically, getting to know the truth behind this thinking would surely be a great idea," says Baptiste, an avid watcher of Silva's shows.

Gaming, has been found to not only keep a person physically active but also work the mind in a dynamic manner. "So as to make yourself work faster and keep our brain and body in proper working condition, you should always step out from their comfort zone, change the environment and should never let youself get saturated," says Silva. Divyam, a 19-year-old gamer says , "Brain games is a fun-towatch show. It not only teaches you but also takes you along a very different level of thinking where you ought to believe what is shown to you. ”

HARASSING WOMAN PLAYER

www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

N

EW DELHI: Delhi police has intensified investigation in the alleged sexual harassment of a woman player by an international-level gymnast and a gymnastics coach. The two accused, who are part of the squad which left for the Incheon Asian Games yesterday, have been booked for allegedly passing obscene comments and making vulgar gestures at the woman player, police said. "An investigation has been launched in the case and police are recording statements of several persons, including stadium staff and other persons. Police are also scanning the footage of CCTV to get some leads in the case," a senior police officer said.

Asked if the accused will be asked to return to India, the officer said that will be done if needed. "Investigating team is doing its job. If needed, police will ask both accused to return to India. However, both are scheduled to come back in the first week of October and police can also then record their statements," he said. In a complaint lodged with the Delhi Police last night, the trainee-level woman gymnast has alleged that the coach and the player passed vulgar remarks about her clothes and made indecent gestures towards her on September 2 evening during a practice session at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. A case has been registered

under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at IP Estate police station in central Delhi. The victim had also alleged that police initially refused to take her complaint, but when a senior official intervened, an FIR was then registered. Speaking on these allegations, a top police official said, "We will investigate if there was a delay on the part of police officials to register gymnast's complaint. If anyone is found guilty, we will take action. Police are also investigating the allegations of gymnast and justice will be done."

GFI TO HAVE INTERNAL INQUIRY ON GYMNAST 'HARASSMENT' ISSUE Gymnastic Federation of India today promised strict against a coach and a player if they are found guilty of charges of 'harassing' a woman player, who lodged a complaint at Delhi Police. An international-level gymnast and a gymnastics coach, who are part of the squad which has left for the Incheon Asian Games, have been booked for allegedly passing obscene comments and making vulgar gestures at a woman player, police said. GFI General Secretary Kaushik Bidiwala told PTI that the federation will conduct an internal inquiry

Torch arrives in Incheon, countdown almost over

INCHEON: The Asian Games torch arrived in host city Incheon today, two days before the opening ceremony that will formally inaugurate the two-week competition featuring almost 10,000 athletes. The torch will be stored in the port city west of South Korea's capital Seoul before being carried on the final legs of its 6,000kilometer (3,700-mile) journey around South Korea set to culminate in Friday night's opening ceremony featuring "Gangnam Style" singer PSY and Chinese pianist Lang Lang. The football tournament began Sunday and Japan, the defending men's champion, already has posted a victory over Kuwait. The Japanese men play their second game against Iraq, which took silver at the 1996 Asian Games and opened the 2014 tournament with a 4-0 win over Nepal. Among other matches, host South Korea plays Saudi Arabia, both of which won their first matches. South Korea's women's team, who were third at the last Asian Games, play India.

after the Asian Games and strict action will be taken against the alleged offenders if they are found guilty. "It's an unfortunate and shameful development, if at all such an incident had happened. We will inquire internally if such incidents had happened and if these people are found guilty, strict action will be taken," said Bidiwala, who is on his way to Incheon for the Asian Games which begin on Friday. He said the coach and the player against whom the FIR was lodged will not be sent back to India. "We will take the necessary action only after the Asian Games. As of now, they will not be sent back home."

Harassment Indian team focussing on speedy passing ahead of Asiad charge against Palestinian I footballer

S

EOUL: South Korean police said they were investigating a Palestinian football player at the Asian Games for alleged sexual harassment and had banned him from leaving the country. The 20-year-old player, whose name was withheld, was accused of groping a 25-year-old woman working in a laundry room at the athletes' village. "He was banned from leaving the country. We have questioned him and we will hand over this case to (state) prosecution authorities soon," Chief Superintendent Kim Hyun-Ja of the Namdong Police Station in Incheon told AFP. Prosecutors will decide whether formal charges should be brought, Kim said. It was the second such case involving foreign participants in the Asian Games which formally open in the South Korean port city of Incheon on Friday. On Tuesday, police in Ansan, south of Seoul, said they had opened a similar investigation into a 38-yearold Iranian man working as a technical equipment manager for the Iranian football team. The man allegedly sexually harassed a 21-yearold female volunteer at a football stadium in Ansan. In both cases, neither suspect was taken into custody.

NCHEON (SOUTH KOREA): Striker SV Sunil says the Indian hockey team is working on "speedy passing" ahead of their Asian Games opener against Sri Lanka on September 21. Talking about his role in the team said and the overall preparations, Sunil said: "I will aim to create sufficient tension in the opposite camp so as to sneak the ball in the goal. I will strive to create a strategic game play to make the winning strike." The 25-year-old from Kodagu, Karnataka revealed the focus of the team's training. "Speedy passing and possession of the ball within the forward line-up is going to help us create more opportunities and currently our practice sessions are focusing on the same," Sunil said. He was also all praise for India goalkeeper P R Sreejesh. "Sreejesh has always given me tips on how to go

through the opponents defence and which I have applied in my games. I have always taken his guidance seriously and it has helped me better myself as a player." The women's team take on Thailand in its opener and midfielder Navjot Kaur said the squad's morale is high. "The team is high on morale and we are confident to top our Pool in the group phase. Our training session on Wednesday was more on speed, coordination and passes. We are confident of starting the tournament on a winning note. The weather is good and we have acclimatised to the conditions here," said Navjot. She further added, "playing with experienced players at the midfield position including our captain Ritu Rani, Vandana Katariya and Sushila Chanu, I have gained a lot of experience which is helping me grow as a player each day".

Boxer Manoj wins court battle against govt, to get Arjuna N

EW DELHI: Forced to take the legal route after being denied the honour initially, Indian boxer Manoj Kumar will be bestowed the Arjuna Award as the Sports Ministry has finally accepted his nomination. Manoj, a 2010 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, told PTI that he was informed of the Ministry's decision this morning. "Mr Onkar Kedia, Joint Secretary (sports), informed my brother Rajesh of the devel-

opment last evening. But the information reached me only this morning," Manoj, who would be competing in the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon, said. The controversial recommendation of boxer Jai Bhagwan for the Arjuna Awards had led to Manoj approaching the Sports Ministry officials, who, he said, had assured him that his name would be added to a list of 15 athletes in a review meeting. But after being snubbed for

a second time in the review meeting, Manoj took the legal route and filed a case in the Delhi High Court. "It is not pleasant at all that I had to approach the court but there was no option left for me. I am glad that I have been proved right and it has lifted my morale ahead for the Asian Games," said the light welterweight category boxer, who was a quarterfinalist at the recent Glasgow CWG. "I am thankful to my elder

brother Rajesh, who fought alone for me against a system which was bent on proving us wrong. It is sad that I had to fight like this for something that was rightfully mine," he added. The ministry, represented by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain, had admitted in the court that Manoj was initially not considered for the award by the committee as they mistakenly believed that he was involved in a doping case.

We can beat Korea in Asiad: Gurusaidutt By Amit Kumar Das

N

EW DELHI: Commonwealth Games bronze medallist R M V Gurusaidutt is desperate to avenge India's Thomas Cup loss to Korea when they open their campaign against the hosts in badminton team event in the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon, Korea. Gurusaidutt and his teammates had lost 2-3 to Korea in the men's team event during the Thomas Cup after K Srikanth lost his opening match and the doubles pairs also failed to get across their higher-ranked opponents. However, Guru feels it is revenge time for India and believes the visitors can beat Korea at their own backyard. "We hope to beat Korea this time. We have to win all three

singles as their both doubles pairs are very strong. It is going to be tough but we have a chance of winning the singles. We can beat them," Guru told PTI ahead of their practice session. The 24-year-old has been in good form this year as he won all his matches during the Thomas Cup and also won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Glasgow Games in August. "I got oneand-a-half month to prepare for the tournament and I have been training hard. I worked on my strengths and I am able to play on court for long time without errors. My net play is also okay now. I hope to do well here. "This is my second Asian Games and I am looking forward to the team championship," said Guru, who won't feature in the individ-

ual event. India have so far won just seven bronze medals ever since badminton made its debut in the Asiad in 1966 with Syed Modi being the only singles player to win the yellow metal in 1982 when India hosted the Games. India thus will look to break the 28-year-old jinx and national coach Pullela Gopichand is hoping his wards will carry the momentum of their good performance at the last two tournaments in Glasgow and Copenhagen. "It is going to a tough event. We haven't won many medals in the past but we have done well in the last two tournaments in CWG and the World Championship. So we hope that we will get good performances in the Asian Games also," Gopichand said.

GERRARD RESCUES LIVERPOOL Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates with Real's Gareth Bale after scoring his side's third goal during the Champions League Group B soccer match between Real Madrid and Basel at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, Spain.

P

ARIS: Steven Gerrard was Liverpool's hero with a stoppage-time penalty as the Reds marked their return to the Champions League with a win, while Arsenal endured a torrid evening against Borussia Dortmund. Gerrard struck from the spot right at the death to hand Liverpool a 2-1 win in their Group B opener against an awkward Ludogorets Razgrad at Anfield yesterday. Meanwhile, goals just either side of half-time by Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emer-

ick Aubameyang gave 2013 runners-up Dortmund a 2-0 win against Arsenal in Germany in Group D, and the hosts were unlucky not to win by more. The evening's big winners were the reigning champions Real Madrid, who crushed Swiss title-holders Basel 5-1 in Group B, while last season's beaten finalists Atletico Madrid suffered a 3-2 defeat against Olympiakos in Greece in Group A. Liverpool were making their first appearance in the Champions League since

2009 and were widely expected to start with a victory against Bulgarian debutants Ludogorets. Brendan Rodgers's side laboured for long spells but when Mario Balotelli put them in front in the 82nd minute to open his Anfield account, they appeared to have the job done. Spanish substitute Dani Abalo stunned the hosts when he equalised in the first minute of stoppage time, but there was to be another twist as Javi Manquillo was fouled inside the box, allowing Ger-

rard, so often a scorer of crucial late goals in the past, to convert a 93rd-minute spotkick. "To get the result was excellent. They showed great character to keep going," said Rodgers. "We had signs of anxiety. We are not at the level we were at last year yet, but that will come with time." Arsenal were torn apart by a typically high-octane Dortmund performance at the Westfalenstadion. The hosts had 15 attempts on goal in the opening half but had to wait until the 45th minute to get the breakthrough when Immobile ran 60 yards before past Wojciech slotting Szczesny. Aubameyang then exchanged passes with Kevin Grosskreutz before rounding the goalkeeper and making it 2-0 in the 48th minute, and the Gabon striker hit the bar soon after as Arsenal lost their opening Champions League game for the first time in 11 years. "We were not at the requested level tonight," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports. "They deserved their win. We conceded a goal just before half-time and just after, and after that the game was difficult of course. "Despite an average performance we had plenty of chances. That was the paradox of the night."

Del Piero, who was also negotiating for a stint with Hungarian club, Honved FC, before opting for the Delhi franchise, is also one of the brand ambassadors of the cash-rich tournament. "I'm very enthusiastic about this adventure. It fits perfectly with the way I chose to move forward since I left Juve," Del Piero had said earlier. Del Piero, also nicknamed 'Il FenomenoVero' or The Real Phenomenon, is the 10th all-time top-scorer in the Champions League and has featured in FIFA 100, a list of the top greatest living footballers compiled by Pele. He has played alongside greats like Gianluigi Buffon and Zinedine Zidane, and managed to stand out. ELLINGTON: Former New Zealand cricket great Martin Crowe revealed today his cancer has returned, 15 months after announcing it was under control. "After a brilliant year of self discovery and recovery I have more work to do," he tweeted. "My friend & tough taskmaster Lymphoma is back to teach me." The 51-year-old was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012, but after months of chemotherapy he said doctors had told him the cancer had shrunk to safe levels, although there was always the possibility of a relapse. Crowe said he will now have to undergo further treatment. A cousin of Hollywood star Russell Crowe, Martin Crowe is widely regarded as the best batsman to have represented New Zealand. He averaged 45.36 in his 77-Test career, which included 17 centuries. In 1991, he scored a New Zealand

record for the most runs in a single Test innings when he was dismissed for 299 playing at Wellington's Basin Reserve against Sri Lanka. The record was not broken until this year when current captain Brendon McCullum reached 302 on the same ground against India.

TROTT READY FOR ENGLAND RETURN LONDON: England batsman Jonathan Trott said he was ready for an international recall. Trott dramatically quit the Ashes tour of Australia last year following the first Test in Brisbane, citing a stressrelated illness, and has not played for England since. However, the 33-year-old South Africa-born righthander has returned to county duty with Warwickshire, although a recurrence of the illness in April led to another break from cricket. But since coming back again with the Midlands county in June, Trott has been in fine form for Warwickshire with four centuries -- two each in the County Championship and the 50-over One Day Cup. However, his time away from the international scene meant that Jonathon Trott was not awarded a central contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board last week.
