SEAT SHARING: BJP DENIES GIVING SENA AN ULTIMATUM A

midst continued tough posturing and hard bargaining from both the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over seat sharing talks, senior BJP leader and in-charge of election management for Maharashtra, Om Prakash Mathur denied having issued any ultimatum to the Sena over finalising seat sharing talks within 12 hours. Senior Sena leader and MP Sanjay Raut too pleaded ignorance over the BJP issuing any ultimatum to it. Meanwhile, at the meeting of Sena office bearers, party president Uddhav Thackeray was authorised to take a final decision on the issue in consonance with Sena and Maharashtra's pride. Earlier in the day, BJP president Amit Shah while addressing a public rally at Chaundi near Ahmednagar and later on addressing party cadres in Pune refrained from making any reference to the Sena. He however urged party cadres to ignore who was the chief ministerial candidate and work from the booth level to ensure that the BJP sweeps to power in the state. Later on, in a brief chat with media persons in Mumbai, state in-charge Rajeev Pratap Rudy remarked that the talks between Sena and BJP were progressing satisfactorily at the top level and hoped that a amicable solution will be found in a couple of days. Later, speaking to media persons at state BJP office, Mathur disclosed that Rudy and state party president Devendra Fadnavis were engaged in seat sharing talks with Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. He however added that the BJP central election committee is likely to meet in New Delhi on two days from September 20 for the Continued on pg 8 ÂŤ

Severe shortage of stamps has been affecting post offices in the state including Mumbai and Thane

By Raju Vernekar

A

severe shortage of postal stamps of small denominations, particularly those below 10, has been affecting post offices in Maharashtra including Mumbai and Thane, due to short supply from the India Security Press in Nashik. There are over 12,000 post offices in Maharashtra including 236 in Mumbai and 439 in Thane district. In addition, there are six sale counters in the Mumbai GPO. On an average, postal stamps worth over Rs 25 crore are sold per day in the state. In Mumbai, the sale of postal stamps is estimated to be in the region of Rs 55 lakh per day. However, due to the shortage, the sale of postal stamps has come down by nearly 60 per cent. For example in Andheri (West) post office, the stamps of Rs.10, Rs.5, Rs.4, Rs.2 and Re.1 are not available and the stamps of very small denominations like 25 and 50 paisa are available. The postal authorities in Andheri have also pasted a notice communicating about the non-availability of stamps to the public. The shortage has been creating problems for people using postal services on a regular basis. The consumers are sometimes required to paste more stamps of smaller denominations consuming a lot of time. Small-time publishers, merchants, religious organisations and clubs who send periodicals to subscribers using stamps of small denomination are the worst hit. The periodicals are required to be posted in stipulated time if they are to avail of book-post facility. Commenting on the issue, V.

ith elections round the corner, the issue of reservation for the Marathas and Muslims seems to have become a much highlighted topic after the Bombay High Court division bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah asked the petitioner to provide data regarding the purported dominance of Marathas in economically strong regions of Satara, Sangli, Parbhani, Baramati, Pune and Karad, vis-a-vis other districts. This comes after the petitioner, former journalist Ketan Tirodkar who has filed

one of the public interest litigations against state government's election-year decision to provide reservations told the court on Thursday that 75 per cent of cooperative sugar factories in Maharashtra were controlled by Marathas and that they were not from the backward class and are dominant in several sectors. Tirodkar contended that 75 per cent of the educational institutions too were controlled by the same community and 75 per cent of the land in the state was owned by the Maratha community. The people from the community form majority of the borrowers of Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, and many loans of the bank had turned bad, leading to appointment of administrator, he said. While Chinese President Xi Jinping is in India, a lot of deals are being signed, a lot of pictures clicked, friendships sealed and all of that, but most Indians are unaware of how to pronounce the name of our neighbouring country's President. Here's some help for all such. The spelling: XI JINPING Language: Mandarin 'Xi' is pretty hard because the 'x' sound does not exist in English. Some say it is similar to the first sound in 'yes' in English. Try producing a hissing sound and

Chinese President Xi Jinping

you'll get close. 'i' is like the 'y' in 'you', but longer. Some, however, insist that the 'xi' is more like the 'shee' 1 'jin' is also tricky. 'j' is pronounced like 'x', but has a stop in front of it. The 'i' in 'jin' is similar to the 'i' in 'xi' but shorter. This too, has another story. 'jin', according to some websites, is 'yin' 2 'ping' is fairly straightforward and follows the English pronunciation. One minor difference is that the 'ng' is pronounced farther back and is more prominent than in English. We can thus assume that it is safe to pronounce the name as – SHEE YINPING

World’s smallest book

Two brothers from Canada have come up with a novel idea - a book so small you need an electron microscope to read it. 'Teeny Ted from Turnip Town', currently the world's smallest book, is a reproduction of a 30-page tale that fits on the width of a human hair. The reproduction, which is printed with pure crystalline silicon, cost a staggering $15,000 (around £9,250) to create. It was written by Malcolm Douglas Chaplin and published by his brother, Robert, at the Simon Fraser University, in British Columbia, Canada. The book's exact measurements are 70 micrometres by 100 micrometres. Its pages, which are too small to be read even using a microscope, are printed on a single tablet. Teeny Ted's story, Robert Chaplin said, is one of triumph - where the main character wins an annual turnip-growing contest. The minute book has been included in the

Woman – the weaker sex?

In a man’s world, 34-year Manju has bravely stood her own ground. When death and hardship came into her life unannounced, there was no time to grieve and lose hope. She chose to take up the decidedly male profession of a Coolie, and has become India’s first and only woman porter in the entire North Western Railway region. Hailing from Jaipur district’s Sunderpura village, Manju was a carefree mother of three until the untimely death of her husband, Mahadev. Mahadev worked as a porter at the Jaipur Railway station, and was the only breadwinner of the entire family. Manju took the difficult decision to step into her husband’s shoes and don his ‘No. 15’ coolie badge. She is the only lady porter in the 177 strong workforce of the Jaipur Railway Station. For a woman to survive in

all-male industry is challenging. Apart from the laborious physical task of lifting heavy loads, there are emotional and psychological consequences too. Manju reveals, “I felt embarrassed when out of sheer curiosity people came to see me pick up luggage. I was always on display. Sometimes, dealing with the heavier bags, I would stumble more times than I care to remember.” And then they say women are the weaker sex.

Gaitonde’s masterpieces sell for $3.75mn

MASTERPIECES by artist Vasudeo S. Gaitonde were sold for about US $3.75 million at leading auction houses in New York, an affirmation of the strong and buoyant market for South Asian contemporary art. Bonhams, one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, said a 1961 'Untitled' oil on canvas by Gaitonde sold for $1.08 million while another 1963 'Untitled' painting by the artist sold for $1.68 million at an auction of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art on Wednesday. Leading auction house Christie's also offered for auction an 'Untitled' oil on canvas signed and dated 'V S Gaitonde 71' valued at $750,000 – $900,000. The painting sold for $965,000. Another painting 'Kaltura' by Gaitonde, valued at between $4,000 - $6,000, sold for $15,000. Among the paintings up for auction at the two houses were works by some of the greatest Indian artists including M.F. Husain and Syed Haidar Raza. Bonhams had said the two Gaitonde paintings were created at a "dramatic turning point" in

the artist's career. The auction house said Gaitonde has "finally arrived on the international stage" with a retrospective at the prestigious Guggenheim museum opening on October 24. Born in 1924, Gaitonde was in his late 30s when he created the paintings. "Gaitonde's international reputation today is the result of his lifelong and uncompromising pursuit of excellence. His chosen path fraught with difficulties was his unwavering commitment to the idiom of abstraction," the house said.

D

eputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar yesterday categorically justified the National Congress Party's demand for equal seat sharing for the Assembly election scheduled on October 15. Speaking to reporters, Pawar said, “Our demand for half of the total 288 seats is fully justified. It is a practical demand. Earlier, formulas were worked out on the basis of previous election results. So according to the recent Lok Sabha poll result we deserve equal sharing. It is a fact that there is no headway in Congress-NCP talks so far. Congress has rejected our demand for equal number of seats. We are hopeful that intervention of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will help to resolve the deadlock”. On a query whether he would be the chief ministerial

Ajit Pawar candidate if the party emerges single largest party, he said, “The NCP will not repeat the past mistakes if it emerges as the single largest party, as it did in 2004 Assembly elections. The newly elected MLAs of the party will decide on their leader. In 2004, NCP emerged as the single largest party with 71 seats but conceded the chief ministerial post to ally Con-

gress in return for two additional cabinet berths. This time around we will form the government if the party wins”. “If NCP gets to form the government it will scrap toll levy in the state. The overall decision making will be faster,” he added further. Referring to Congress MLA Prashant Thakur quitting the party to join BJP over the issue of Kharghar toll plaza, Pawar pointed out that a young political activist like Prashant quitting over this issue is most unfortunate. Forty per cent of the state population pass through the Kharghar toll 'naka' to come to Mumbai. I was in favour of the scrapping of the toll but Cidco and MMRDA would need to pay Rs.1200 crore to the government. It was not a big deal but Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan did not agree over this issue and it is still pending,” he clarified.

FIR against impostors faking Raj Thackeray’s identity online A

n FIR was registered against unidentified people on Thursday, for allegedly creating fake social media accounts of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray as well as posting "objectionable pictures" of the MNS chief and his family members online, the police said. "An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act in connection with the complaint related to MNS chief Raj Thackeray," Shivaji Park police station's senior inspector Parshuram Kakad said. "A written complaint was handed over to the police by Thackeray's personal assistant Sachin More and accordingly the FIR was registered," Kakad said. The written complaint submitted yesterday by More read, "We wish to bring to your notice that fake accounts on social networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut have been created in the name of MNS chief Raj Thackeray and intimate pictures of Thackeray have been posted online without his consent".

The complaint stated that alleged impostors had sent "friend requests" to people online. After accepting these "friend requests", the fraudsters indulged in chats in the name of Raj Thackeray. "The impostor is fooling people by making them believe that Raj Thackeray him-

self is chatting with them," it alleged. It is imperative to take strict action against the accused as they have indulged in criminal acts of posting fake political reactions and thereby creating confusion in the minds of the people, the letter said.

he All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM or MIM for short) is all set to make its formal foray into the Maharashtra Assembly election scene. The MIM has made its intentions clear of contesting about 60 odd Assembly seats in the October 15 elections in the state. Of these, the MIM plans to contest about 10 in Mumbai. The decision of the Asauddin and Akbaruddin Owaisi led MIM to contest Assembly elections in Maharashtra has set alarm bells ringing in political circles. Known for its hardline stance on minority issues, the entry of Akbaruddin Owaisi

MIM into the state has raised the anxiety levels in the ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). There could be more problems on hand for the ruling Congress-NCP alliance as there are unconfirmed reports about All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leader and Lok Sabha MP from Assam, Baddurdin Ajmal also planning to contest Assembly elections in Maharashtra. Both MIM and AIUDF are known to have widespread and sizable following amongst the minority community. The MIM is currently led by president and Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, Asauddin Owaisi and his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi. Speaking exclusively to the ADC yesterday, an MIM office-bearer on conditions Azad Shrivastav | ADC

of anonymity disclosed that the MIM intends to contest 10 minority dominated Assembly seats in Mumbai like Mumbadevi, Byculla, Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, Chembur, Andheri (W), Versova, Dindoshi, Chandivali, Anushakti Nagar and Kalina. Outside Mumbai, the MIM plans to contest Bhiwandi (E), Bhiwandi (W), Mira Bhayandar, MumbraKalwa in Thane district. Besides this the MIM also has plans to contest assembly seats in Nashik, Beed, Aurangabad, Nanded, Osmanabad, Parbhani and some seats in Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha region. The MIM leader claimed that the party has the ability and support base to win at least 10 Assembly seats in Maharashtra. He argued that the intention of the MIM is to give a jolt to the CongressNCP alliance and emerge as the credible option for the

minority community. The party plans to field candidates from the minority community in Assembly seats that are dominated by the community. Party leader and MIM floor leader in Telangana state legislature Akbaruddin Owaisi had recently held a well attended rally at Nagpada in south Mumbai. The MIM has 11 corporators in the 81 member Nanded-Waghala municipal corporation. Although the Congress swept the Nanded civic body polls in October 2012, what caught the attention of everybody was the election of 11 MIM corporators. In the civic polls held then, the MIM damaged the electoral prospects of at least 15 seats held by the Congress. Besides Nanded civic body, the MIM has its presence in Surat civic body and some civic bodies in Uttar Pradesh as well.

he Mumbai University's work on air-conditioning its historic hall, the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Convocation Hall, was at a standstill till yesterday, when the Mahanagar Gas Limited confirmed that it would pump in Rs 1 crore to set up the A/C unit keeping in mind the prestige of the university. The Sir Cowasji Jehangir Convocation Hall was funded and set up by Parsi entrepreneur and business tycoon Sir Cowasji Jehangir Readymoney. It was completed in the 1870s and was recently renovated to its original glory after decades of neglect. This hall can accommodate 500 persons, with another 100 on its balcony. Keeping in mind the visits of international ministries and dignitaries to the convocation hall, the var-

sity had proposed the need for ACs. The hall has been host to various international conferences, seminars and visits by the prime ministers and presidents of various countries Mahanagar Gas is taking up this project as part of its CSR programme. A standard air-conditioning system has to be procured and installed. In September 2012, the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had said that the varsity's proposal stated that the balcony inside the convocation hall would be permanently blocked and the sudden cooling could

damage the structure. The committee had thus rejected the proposal. Later, in June 2013, members of the Board of College and University Development (BCUD) had rehashed the plan to air condition the hall. The MU then prepared a sketch for the installation of the AC which was forwarded to the heritage committee. The heritage committee suggested various modifications, which the MU has considered in its new plan. The ADC spoke to Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, who said, “The MU will soon start fixing the air-conditioners once the experts finalise the design.”

uvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, a rather uncommon disease that occurs in children may affect a single or multiple joints in children and if the patient is not treated at the right time, it can lead to substantial loss of joint mobility and function. And this is what happened to 23-year old Sandeep Wamkar from Dapoli. Sandeep was completely bedridden for more than five years, as he was suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. After completing schooling, tenth standard pass Sandeep took up a job as a salesman at a book store but his condition was keeping him from being able to work properly. He used to have extended spells of excruciating pain and it was due to this that Sandeep had to quit his job within two years. He had lost all movement in his legs and was ren-

Sandeep Wamkar dered completely unable to walk. Unable to see Sandeep in such pain and trouble, his relatives brought him to Mumbai and suggested his

family visit Fortis Raheja Hospital. A thorough examination by Dr Satish Mutha, Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, Fortis Raheja Hospital found out that Sandeep's hip joints had been severely damaged due to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and he needed to undergo surgery. And so, three weeks ago, Sandeep underwent an uncemented total hip replacement on his right leg. His left leg will also be operated at a later stage. Dr Mutha said, “It has been three weeks since we performed this surgery on Sandeep and I am glad to see marked improvement in his condition. Being bedridden for so many years with unending pain, he would barely get good sleep in the night. But after the surgery, Sandeep can now walk with the help of a walker, can do his routine work and he also gets quality sleep.” “Diagnosing JRA in children can be quite a challenge at times and requires high index of suspicion. Fortunately in most cases it remains mild and may disappear with time. A small percentage like Sandeep may experience severe form of the disease and need aggressive medical management and also sometimes surgical intervention,” added Dr Mutha.

Addressing a press conference, Modi said: "I am pleased with the agreements on two Chinese industrial parks in India and a commitment to realise $20 billion of Chinese investments in the next five years. This opens a new chapter in our economic relations." As per the MoU signed in June, 2014, China will set up a auto industrial park in Maharashtra and electricity equipment industrial park in Gujarat. A separate pact on AudioVisual Co-production between the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television was also signed to enable producers from both countries to get an opportunity to pool their creative, artistic, technical, financial and marketing resources to co-produce films. The two sides also decided to enhance cooperation in matters related to custom administration and inked a pact that will help strengthening cooperation to fight trans-border economic crimes and custom offences through sharing of information. Seat sharing: BJP denies giving Sena an ultimatum Continued from pg 1 « October 15 assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. Mathur also denied having giving any number of assembly seats to the Sena that the BJP wants to contest. He expressed optimism that the seat sharing talks will be concluded soon. The Sena's pride and Maharashtra's pride is

Meanwhile, in an apparent show of pressure tactics, Republican Party of India (Athawale) leader and MP Ramdas Athawale claimed to have received a phone call from Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar for an alliance. A similar veiled warning was issued by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty who remarked that if the alliance issue was not resolved soon the SSS will contest the assembly polls on its own strength.

T

he Rabale police on September 16 arrested the owner of a pathological laboratory in Navi Mumbai along with a doctor for being involved in some malpractices. The ADC had in July published an article – 'A dicey path lab and a bogus doctor', where a case was lodged at Rabale police station against Arvind S Yadav, owner of a pathological laboratory called Pratima Clinical Diagnostic Centre at Airoli and Dr Vivekanand Parshuram

Honakeri because the laboratory was using the signature of Dr Honakeri, who stays at Bijapur in Karnataka and is a full-time pathologist at a medical college, on the reports given by the laboratory in Mumbai. This questionable act was deemed unethical by the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM) and Dr Rajiv Rao, a pathalogist from Navi Mumbai and also the spokesperson of MAPPM had thus lodged a complaint against them. “A complaint had been

lodged against them and investigations were on. We were gathering evidence against them by talking to members of the MAPPM. We also did some fact-finding at Bijapur where Dr Honakeri used to stay and work. After having collected enough evidence, when we got to know that the absconding Dr Honakeri was in Ghatkopar, we immediately went there and arrested him. We also arrested Yadav and produced them at the court in CBD Belapur on the same day. They have been booked under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly in-

ducing delivery of property ), 465 (Punishment for forgery), 467 (Forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and also under the Medical Council of India Act,” said Assistant Police Inspector A Gawade, Rabale police station. The charge-sheet will be submitted within a week's time. In the meanwhile, Yadav and Dr Honakeri are now out on bail, informed Gawade. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

We will ensure clearing the right lane of a packed road so that ambulance proceeds without any hassles. “There are about 900 ambulances on the road on a daily basis but we will escort the vehicles that are ferrying those declared as critical patients,” the traffic police chief added. Rita Salva, director of Radhee foundation said, "Even the ambulance driver is not aware that they are supposed to drive in right lane only and not in zigzag manner to reach the hospital at the earliest." Traffic police have also held several meetings with doctors' associations, ambulance operators' associations, auto and taxi unions to ensure proper co-ordination with them so that drive can be successfully implemented.

Beef up air traffic control system: Guv By A Staff Reporter

overnor Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Thursday expressed the need for strengthening air traffic control system to cope up with the growing air traffic movement and to ensure safety of passengers in the country. Rao said, with the Indian trade and economy moving forward, air traffic movement has become very complex requiring continuous monitoring of aircraft movement in space and at the time of landing and take-off. This has created a need for having a strong air traffic control system with robust design and features. The Governor was addressing a seminar on ‘Future Air Traffic Management – Safe,

Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao is presented a replica of the Mumbai Air Traffic Control tower at the inauguration of a seminar on Future Air Traffic Management, on Thursday. Seamless and Synchronized’ organised as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Air Traffic Controllers Guild on Thursday. The Air Traffic Controllers’ Guild (India), a professional body

of Air Traffic Controllers in India was conceived in Mumbai and established on September 18, 1964. The Governor said only six metro airports in the country among themselves are re-

sponsible for handling more than 70 per cent of air traffic. This, he said, has led to congestion at metro airports with consequent traffic delay, high fuel consumption, growing pollution, etc. In this connection he said, air traffic management has become an urgent issue to be addressed at the metro airports. “The challenge is to cope with increasing traffic, increasing connectivity and the need to attain higher levels of efficiency along with enhanced safety,” he said. The Governor called upon the ATC Guild (India) to explore the possibility of working closely with universities in Maharashtra and starting Air Traffic Management related programmes through the universities and colleges.

Byculla zoo’s lioness in hospital for over a year By Aroosa Ahmed

L

ioness Jimmy (14), born to Anita who passed away three years ago at the Jijamata Udyan, Byculla, has been in the zoo hospital for a year and a half now. Jimmy, the only big cat at the zoo, was shifted to the zoo hospital after being detected

with a nerve problem – peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a disease affecting the nerves which may impair sensation, movement, gland or organ function, or other aspects of health, depending on the type of nerve affected. It is a slow progression of nerve loss or damage. The common causes of the disease include systemic diseases, vitamin

deficiency, traumatic injury or infection, or it may be inherited. Talking to the ADC, Anil Anjankar said, “Jimmy was suffering from administered nerve tonics, joint supplements and saline, and she underwent physiotherapy. We would feed her as she would not eat on her own. However, now her condition is getting better and she is eating on her own. Keeping her at the zoo cage would not make her feel better, that is why she is kept in the zoo hospital and given good care. She is a hybrid breed (African-Asiatic) and to get another Asiatic lion, it would take us a minimum of an year.” He further said, “We do not have a tiger in the zoo at present, there was one in 2007. However, once the redevelopment of the zoo is done and the animals feel better in their natural habitat, we plan to bring in tigers.” Veterinary officer at the zoo, Dr Komal Raul, said, “The lioness is doing fine and being treated well.”

Ponder awhile… “The holidays are only holy if we make them so.” — Marianne Williamson

Free European holiday for Karnataka MLAs Q

UITE a few state governments send their MLAs on a free foreign jaunt. It is not known whether the government does this with an ulterior motive. It is the taxpayers’ money they are spending. From Karnataka, 15 MLAs have gone on an European trip. They are not spending their own: the Karnataka government is financing the tour. Obviously, they will be claiming it as a ‘study tour’. They will not speak a word about the joy ride. What is most astonishing is that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah does not know a thing about this foreign junket. When newsmen asked him, he said he had no information about it. Does this mean that the CM does not know what is going on in his government? Usually, the excuse given is that the study tour will benefit the country. Even the BMC has sent councillors and other officials on study tours. One of the study tours conducted was for the to study the drainage system in London. After their return, the drainage system of the city remained as bad as ever. The study tour seemed to have done very little to improve the drainage. It only helped officials to have a free, happy holiday.

T may be quite some time since Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his Independence Day speech, but it is never too late to report what the media has to say about it. So this is what The Free Press Journal (Aug. 16) said and it deserves notice: "Modi's wonted oratory was in full flow as he pressed all the right buttons to exhort India to get its act together. Modi mesmerised the nationwide audience, what is more he spoke from an open podium, not from behind a bulletproof glass enclosure. Typically Modi began by calling himself the first servant of the people... (which) was received with wild cheering from the distinguished assemblage. There was much more to win the hearts of the people and to neutralise the critics".

wind" and the results in four states "show that BJP's unprecedented gains in the Lok Sabha earlier this year do not automatically translate into gains in local elections". The paper added: "By-elections are by no means a referendum on the Modi government's first months but these results mean that BJP should not take its current ascendance as irreversible. NDA must focus on performance and outcome now". The Hindu (Aug. 26) noted that the latest round of by-elections to Assembly seats will be remembered for the success of a political experiment in Bihar involving the coming together of three parties against the Bharatiya Janata Party. “The results", said the paper

departure from this pattern". The passing away of Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy drew serious attention in the media. The Indian Express (Aug. 25) called Ananthamurthy a 'literary colossus' which indeed he was. As the paper noted, Ananthamurthy was "a crusader against populist writing" and one who explored how caste, dogma and religious scholarship played out in the face of the death of a Brahmin apostate. Ananthamurthy was a Jnanpith awardee who examined India's biggest dilemmas since Independence. Thus, as the paper pointed out, the writer in his famous works wanted to find out whether Brahmins and shudras were irreconcilable categories. Ananthamurthy raised such issues as "Is medium education impoverishing our emotional lives? How can we retain our self-respect in a post colonial globalised age?" As the paper saw in his death, it has been a loss of "a literary colossus, provocateur and a supporter of many causes" who had "few peers in India".

MEDIAWATCH

Likewise Deccan Herald (Aug. 25) saw in Ananthamurthy “A 'literary colossus' among the rare bred who included several generations of people". The paper described him as a "multifaceted personality who excelled as a teacher and administrator, igniting several young minds". Calling him "one of the tallest progressive thinkers the country has seen" the paper said "a staunch votary of secular ideals he raised his voice on several social and political issues and remained unfazed and adamant on the controversies that his comments created till his very end". The Asian Age (Aug. 24) felt that "the Indian literary world has lost a giant, the intelligentsia a major voice and the country a person of impeccable intellectual integrity". The Hindustan Times (Aug. 26) published a powerful article by Sitaram Yechury, CPM Politburo member, which said that Ananthamurthy "spoke about all our dreams while remaining a socialist by conviction and practice till the end". As Yechury saw it, Ananthamurthy felt "the imposition of anything was alien to India's ethos". As Yechury saw him, “Ananthamurthy was a litterateur par excellence and a down-to-earth practitioner of equality and social justice". As Yechury noticed, Ananthamurthy was a "strident critic of all forms of hegemonism and his opposition to Hindutva arose from this conviction.”

PM Modi’s humility Praising all the issues that the prime minister had raised, in lauding the issue of female foeticide, added the paper: "This was a real prime ministerial address in the true sense of the term, with Modi displaying humility as the first servant of the people exhorting them when necessary, gently guiding them when required and generally staying above the partisan fray. There was not a single false note in the entire address. Hope what he said he can implement in the years ahead. It was a stirring performance all the way". Two days later the same paper reported that Modi's popularity rating "had gone up further following the early morning address at the Red Fort. Even those who are viscerally hostile to him felt obliged to commend it". Concluding the paper said: "If only every Indian, including, of course, politicians began to take their civic duties seriously, the face of the country will change sooner than one realises". Following the by-elections to assembly seats in Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost six incumbent seats, The Economic Times (Aug. 26) said it was "a major setback for a party basking in the euphoria of a historic Lok Sabha victory in May". Said the paper: "The Bihar outcome gives the lie to the theory of pan-Hindu mobilisation... The BJP could win only four seats. While the blame game starts in the BJP, it goes to the credit of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar that they agreed to bury long-standing hostilities, swallow their pride and forge a formidable coalition spanning caste and religious identities". The Times of India (Aug. 26) said that the by-election results are "straws in the political

Multifaceted personality M.V. Kamath "significantly moderate the idea that the BJP is at an electorally invulnerable point in its history". It added: "At the same time it cannot be denied that the BJP had beaten alliance arithmetic in the four seats it has won. The results indicate how the battle lines will be drawn when Assembly elections are held in Bihar in 2015". None of the papers ever mentioned it but what the elections in Bihar showed was not a respect for principles but for the ever present caste system that is the bane in Bihar. As the paper noted "the three parties seemed to have done some strategic thinking in bringing together their combined vote base drawn from the Yadavs, other backward classes, Dalits and Muslims". The Hindustan Times (Aug. 26) felt that the Bihar by-poll results suggest that key players got the electoral maths right, but there was no wave. It said: "These by-poll results are in agreement with the general trend observed over the past few elections that the results of the Lok Sabha polls and those of the Assembly elections have thrown up divergent pictures, though there have been occasional

Sufis have seen the ‘Beloved’ in all beings M

AN seeks happiness in pleasure, in joy, but these are only shadows of happiness. The real happiness is in the heart of man. But man does not look for it. In order to find happiness, he seeks pleasure. Anything that is passing and anything that results in unhappiness is not happiness. Happiness is the very being of man. Vedantists have called the human soul Ananda, happiness, because the soul itself is happiness. Sin and virtue, good and bad, right and wrong, can be distinguished and determined on this principle. Virtue is what brings real happiness. What is called right is that which leads to happiness. What is good is good because it gives happiness. And if it does not do so it cannot be good, it cannot be virtue, it cannot be right. Whenever man has found virtue in unhappiness he has been mistaken. Whenever he was wrong he has been unhappy. Happiness is the being of man. That is why he craves for it.

Man also shows his inclination for peace. It is not rest or comfort or solitude which can give peace. It is an art which must be learnt, the art of the mystics by which one comes to experience peace. One may ask why, if it is natural for the soul to experience peace, one must strive for peace by practice, by meditation, by con-

MATTER & SPIRIT templation. The answer is that it is natural to experience peace, but life in the world is not natural. Animals, birds experience peace, but not man, for he is the robber of his own peace. What is peace? Peace is the natural condition of the soul. The soul which has lost its natural condition becomes restless. The normal condition of mind is tranquility, yet at the same time the mind is anything but tranquil. The soul experiences anything but peace. The question which arises in the mind of every thoughtful person is, what was the rea-

son, what was the purpose of the creation of this world? The answer is, to break the monotony. Call it God, call it the only Being, call it the source and goal of all. Being alone, He wished that there should be something for Him to know. The Hindus says that the creation is the dream of Brahma. One may call it a dream, but it is the main purpose. The Sufis explain it thus: that God, the Lover, wanted to know His own nature. And that therefore through manifestation the Beloved was created, in order that love might manifest. And when we look at it in this light, then all that we see is the Beloved. As Rumi, the greatest writer of Persia says, The Beloved is all in all, the lover only veils Him. The Beloved is all that lives, the lover a dead thing. (Mathnawi I, 30) Sufis have therefore called God the Beloved. And they have seen the Beloved in all beings. They did not think that God was in heaven, apart, away from all beings. In everything, in all forms, they have seen the beauty of God. And in this realization the main purpose and the ultimate purpose of life is fulfilled. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Setback or boon in disguise? THE result of by-election gave a shock to he BJP. However, such shocking feedback from public, must be present before true politicians at regular internals. This gives an idea to the rulers, that where they have gone wrong or missed something. It is better to say that the BJP should not take the upcoming Assembly election of Haryana and Maharashtra for granted. Further, the Shiv Sena also got the opportunity to dominate the BJP in its state. The present scenario gives hope for the Congress-NCP and MNS too, but by mediating, SS and BJP can resolve their seats issue and can give a good message to the public for good governance. — Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara

THE by-poll debacle in the just concluded Assembly and Parliamentary polls are a boon in disguise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his leaders had become complacent after the Modi wave which placed their leader at the top post and they believed that this wave would continue for years to come. While Modi has been busy building the nation's image in the eyes of the international community, success has gone to the heads of his leaders and supporters who became overconfident and thought that every political seat can be won in the name of their leader. To be fair to PM Narendra Modi, he has not had much time to look into party affairs after becoming

Narendra Modi is a shrewd politician and I am sure he has it in him to lead his men.

THE ignominy suffered by the BJP in various Assembly polls after May 16 could have been avoided had the party decided to adopt the following criteria before selecting the candidates for the General Elections of April/May 2014: No sitting MLA from the party should have been given the ticket to contest the Parliamentary election, No party member, whether PM candidate or an ordinary party worker, should have been permitted to stand from more than one Lok Sabha constituency. This way, the loss of Assembly seats to the 'secular' alliance could have been at least postponed by a few years. Apart from this, a few crores of rupees, spent on such avoidable exercise, would have been saved. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

THE results of the various Assembly and Lok Sabha polls that were held after May 16, clearly show that the BJP-led government at the Centre has completely lost the confidence of the people, and as such, they have forfeited their moral right to rule the country. If the Saffron government does not quit on its own, then a joint delegation of all the secular parties in India should at once petition the President and impress upon him the urgent need to dismiss this communal govt and order fresh elections. Such a step will go a long way in ensuring a minimum of a century’s rule for the entire 'secular' alliance, acting as a single cohesive unit. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

and complaints – the politicians. The latter are rarely interested in solving people’s problems impartially, indiscriminately and without using any divisive policies, obviously meant for votes, and thereby notes. ‘Early Childhood Association’ president Swati Popat Vats has rightly said, “Let’s celebrate the fact that our Prime Minister addressed the students on Teachers’ Day. We

must keep aside all controversies and complaints about his address. We need to applaud his efforts. This will have an impact on how parents, students, society view and respect teachers.” Modi’s efforts to encourage the students to save electricity, water and environment will give the best fruits not only to all the present students in their future life, but also to all the youngsters and elderly people of India, just within the next few years. We are lucky to get a visionary Prime Minister in the form of Narendra Modi. IMS Vikrant fades into oblivion APROPOS 'IMS Vikrant dismantling to begin' (ADC, Sept 17 ) , this historic aircraft carrier used during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war stood out as an exclusive war fare craft. Despite a 17-year-long campaign to retain this war ship as a museum piece for posterity, the apathy of the Indian defence authority allowed this to happen. It is not strange to learn that the labour contractor's men engaged by its new owner felt the pinch of breaking such a gigantic and elegantly built ship. However, it is indeed sad to witness such an event while an exclusive ship of this size and importance to be retained is going under the hammer to be broken into pieces. In the developed world such a thing would have never occurred rather they would have refurbished the ship extensively to maintain it for its historic significance. — Bikram Banerjea, via email

Camaraderie with China THIS refers to your edit-piece 'A good beginning' (ADC, Sept 18) in which you have asked a pertinent question, "Will the border disputes end?" even with a massive investment of 100 billion dollars by China. In all probability they will not, since the Dragon is not used to giving up anything. However, the Chinese President has gone out of the way to come straight to Ahmedabad to meet the Prime Minister at a time when our own President was away. He did give the impression of enjoying all the hospitable moves of the PM – swaying in the swing with him and all that, but border disputes are altogether different and it is to be seen whether the friendly-looking Xi Jinping finally changes course and orders his troops to leave the border at peace. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

ollowing Swapnali Lad's major accident in Thane, where she had jumped off a running auto-rickshaw, the Thane traffic police has taken an initiative to ensure a safe auto journey. The traffic police have launched a system of smart IDs in Thane city. The launch took place in Thane on Thursday in the presence of Vijay Kamble, CP, Thane; V V Laxminarayan, joint commissioner, Thane; V B Chanadanshive, DCP, Zone 5 – Thane; Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, Traffic Police, Thane and Marathi television actress Mrunal Dusanis. The implementation of these Traffic Smart IDs has been done for the safety of women in the city. These IDs, with an ID code and helpline number printed on them, were distributed among the autorickshaw drivers in the city, who will stick them on the back of their seats. The passengers can note or capture this ID in their cell phones and send it to traffic officials in case of emergency or help during

Actor Mrunal Dusanis during the launch of the Thane Traffic Police campaign. crisis. At present, 12,500 auto rickshaws ply in Thane city but only 5,000 such IDs have been registered so far. Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, Traffic Zone, said, “Women can download an App called 'Safe Journey' through which they can contact traffic police in case of any crisis or they can simply capture the ID image which has a

code printed on it. The code will help the police to detect the particular auto within a short time. Thane is the first city in Maharashtra to have such a system.” “The distribution of the IDs will begin tomorrow and it will take around 10 days to complete the distribution process. The registration of IDs for other autos will also begin soon,” added Karandikar.

seeking tickets from segments once represented by their alliance partners. The classic example is that of the Mira Bhayandar Assembly segment where the BJP has poised itself for a head-to-head battle with the NCP. However, owing to the ongoing tug-of-war between the saffron partners, two Shiv Sena corporators – Prabhakar Mhatre and Sandip Patil – have sought tickets to contest the polls from this segment. According to political experts, this move by the local Shiv Sena unit was a calculated counter attack on the BJP which has already staked its claim from the OwalaMajiwada Assembly segment, currently represented by sitting Shiv

Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik. Interestingly, bureaucrat-turnedneta, Shivmurthi Naik is keen to contest on a BJP ticket. On the other hand, senior corporator Dr Asif Shaikh is in line for a NCP ticket from the Owala-Majiwada segment which had gone to the Congress-kitty in the last Assembly polls. Here, two Congress corporators – Hansu Pandey and Prabhat Patil – are said to be aspiring frontrunners in the race for tickets, after the local Congress unit openly rejected the idea of using Thane’s Balrishna Purnekar, who was desperately trying to make his presence felt in this segment, a significant part of which falls under the MBMC region.

New developments in minor’s suicide By Zuber Ansari

I

n the case of the minor girl who committed suicide last Tuesday just after she was raped, the police have now sent blood samples of her boyfriend and brother-in-law, the two men she had accused of raping her in her suicide note, to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory to check if it matches with the semen collected from her body. The results of this test will confirm whether it was one of the two men who raped her or if there was a third man who raped the girl just before she took the drastic step. But the investigating police officers at the Vakola police station are asking, if there was a third man involved, why didn't she mention it in her suicide note? Sources at the police station said, “We are waiting for the postmortem results which will tell us if she was pregnant. The blood samples of the boyfriend and the brother-in-law have been sent to test if the DNA matches with the semen that was collected from the girl's body. The two men have been arrested.” When questioned, both men denied being with her before she committed suicide.

Sex den Seats-sharing deadlock: Eyeing each other’s pie operated by MBMC corporators line up for Assembly tickets from each other’s stronghold couple from W Mira Road flat busted By Suresh Golani

ith the seat-sharing talks between the warring NCP-Congress and Shiv Sena-BJP leadership making no headway, a section of leaders including corporators in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) seem to have taken it as an opportunity to take a plunge into state politics, if at all the deadlock results in a break-up between the coalition partners. With one full Assembly segment of Mira-Bhayandar (145) and a major portion of the Owala-Majiwada (146) constituency falling in the civic jurisdiction of the twincity, local corporators have started

Woman caught using fake currency By Tariq Khan

A

21-year-old woman was arrested from Chembur yesterday while she was putting fake currency notes into circulation. Police say that the woman has spent around Rs 83,000 worth of fake currency in the city for the past month and a half. A gang operating from West Bengal is suspected to have channelled the money to Tajnira Auliya Sheikh, 21. She entered a bakery in a isolated area in Chheda Nagar, Chembur, at around 7.15 pm where she purchased goods worth Rs 85 with a Rs. 1,000 note. The shopkeeper, Balu Shette, got suspicious as the woman was shabbily dressed and he was re-

cently cheated by a woman who gave him a fake note. Shette crosschecked the note and realised that it was a fake. He quickly called the police without letting her know, and told Sheikh to wait for some time as he looked for change. Officers from the Tilak Nagar police station reached the spot and nabbed Sheikh. "During the interrogation, she revealed that she is a resident of Naya Nagar, Mahim, and that her boyfriend gives her Rs 5,000 worth of fake notes every day to circulate in the market. We carried out a raid and recovered Rs 16,000 from the house at once. She changed her statement later and said she was given Rs 1 lakh by her boyfriend," said DCP Sangramsinh Nishandar of zone VI.

Sheikh comes from Murshidabad, West Bengal, where she met the other accused who brought her to Mumbai. Tilak Nagar police is on the lookout for this accused who shuttles between West Bengal and Mumbai. "We have informed the National Investigation Agency and AntiTerrorist Squad about the arrest. We are investigating further as we suspect a big racket is involved in pumping this fake currency to destablise the economy," added Nishandar. The accused was found to be living in a rented house in Mahim. She used to purchase household grocery worth with the fake notes. A Police officer said that the fake currency notes are being made in Malda district in West Bengal.

19-yr-old girl from W. Bengal rescued By Suresh Golani

P

osh residential areas in MiraBhayandar seem to have become a hot destination for sex racketeers. This was exposed after a team from the Anti-Human Trafficking Wing (AHTW) of the Thane (rural) police busted yet another prostitution racket that was being operated from a posh residential locality in Mira Road. After receiving a tip-off from International Justice Mission, an NGO, the AHTW team led by API Sachin Gavas, sent a decoy customer and after confirming the authenticity of the information, raided a flat in Gaurav Aster building near the Green Court Club in Mira Road on hursday afternoon. A couple identified as Najma (27) and Satyajit Singh who operated the sex racket were arrested and booked under various sections of the stringent Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act. The police team rescued a 19-year-old woman hailing from West Bengal from the clutches of the couple. Going by the number of arrests in connection with prostitution, the pimps, mostly couples, seem to have adopted a new technique by renting flats in plush residential colonies to carry out their nefarious activities posing as well-to-do-families.

Happy Holiday! Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

Whether you’re taking a vacation next month or next year, you need to plan, book, budget and pack — all while ensuring that your trip is as memorable as it can be. So, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami draw up a holiday planning guide to help ensure that the process is a breeze

planning your itinerary Don’t go into a vacation blind, or you’ll end up either doing so much that you experience too little, or doing nothing at all. Creating the perfect itinerary is the first step to planning a great vacation, so follow these tips to ensure that you have a seamless, fun-filled holiday. n First things first, download an application or buy a book (if you’re the paper and pen type) dedica ted to your itinerary. Don’t scribble notes on post-its or think that you will remember everything months later. n Don’t pack too much into your trip. Sure, you want to see and do everything, but what’s the point if you spend your entire vacation running from pillar to post and miss out on experiencing things? Plan things realistically and accept that you will have to make compromises. n Don’t forget to account for travel time. Very often, you think of seeing five things in one day, but don’t realise that the time you will take to travel from one place to the other will cut a huge chunk out of your schedule. Account for traffic, research how long it takes to reach and plan everything down to the T. n Remember to research local holidays and timings. You don’t want to have three things on your itinerary, on ly to be left with one because everything else was closed! n If you’re renting a car, think of parking spaces, walking time from the parking space to your destination and allow yourself a little breathing room in between. n Don’t forget to schedule in your meals! This may sound silly, but imagine spending the entire day trying to keep up with your tight schedule — if there’s no meal time scheduled in, you will end up missing out on some great local food, not to mention your daily nutrients. n Keep it flexible. You never know what you might experience while you’re there and you may want to spend more or less time at a particular place than you thought you would.

accommoDation Where to stay during your trip is important to consider if you don’t have friends or relatives who reside in the country that you plan to visit. You can refer to applications for hotel details, prices and reviews (refer to our vacation planning applications to check which ones we like best) and call and confirm for current prices. Follow hotel blogs, social media accounts and read online reviews before you confirm a booking. Try to find out where friends, friends of friends, relatives, acquaintances and colleagues have stayed on their trips.

>> Websites and online reviews can help you pick the perfect hotel

>> Get an application that can help you put all your ideas in one place, so you can plan your vacation with ease

Drawing up a buDget Don’t look at your bank balance, subtract the amount you want to save and set the rest as a budget. Follow these tips instead: n Divide and rule: Divide your holiday into travelling to the destination, inter-city travel, accommodation, entertainment, entry charges for attractions, food and shopping. Set a budget for each section, but read our next point first! n Estimate, then budget: Don’t go about setting arbitrary budgets for various sections. For example, you might have set a budget of `600 for entertainment, but does it cover the cost of film tickets as well as popcorn? Look online to draw up an estimate of how much it might actually cost. Then, use these mean prices or estimates to set realistic budgets. n Look to save money: Planning a budget goes hand-in-hand with looking for ways to spend less. So, every time you research entry prices or transport costs, look for ways to save on them. For example, tourist attractions offer discounts if you book online for a large group. Several countries have pre-paid, intercity transport cards that you can buy online at a cheaper price, especially if you book in advance. Also, instead of just buying foreign currency (more on that later), check the conversion rate trend over the past year to see whether you might be able to convert at a better rate in the near future.

Don’t forget these So, you’ve drawn up a great budget. But, did you include tips, laundry charges and emergency costs? Take a look at some things that you may not have accounted for: n ATM fees that are often location specific. n Roaming charges on your phone — for calling, texting and data. n Departure taxes — for example, if you visit Bali, you have to pay a tax while flying out after your holiday. n Tips at restaurants, in cabs and at hotels. n Buying souvenirs. n Snacks and food, over and above your daily meals. n Medication — which is usually very expensive in foreign countries. n Taxes — whether at restaurants, for accommodation charges or entry to tourist spots; the prices that you find out about will usually be exclusive of taxes.

getting the Best Fare

Best vacation planning applications

Whether you’re travelling within the country or to an international destination, you will spend a major chunk of your budget on airfare. However, there are various ways you can save money on air tickets. Here are a few tips: n Travel during off-season: This is a classic strategy that will help you get cheaper flight tickets. Mohit Gupta, chief business and marketing officer for MakeMyTrip, tells us that summer holidays and the DussehraDiwali-Christmas months are peak travel seasons in India. So, if you can, avoid planning a holiday during this period. Also check peak seasons and travel trends to your destination. n Research: This is one of the best ways to get a good deal. Instead of trusting your neighbourhood travel agent to get you the best fare, look for it yourself. Mohit tells us that their website (MakeMyTrip) has a calendar on its flight booking page with airfare — for the route that you want — for up to one year from your search date. Yatra.com, another travel website, has a similar calendar, where you can look at the airfare for an entire month on a particular route. Checking these calendars can help you decide on a date that offers you the lowest airfares. n Be flexible: N ot just with your travel dates and accommodation, but also with where you want to land. Confused? Mohit has an excellent tip when it comes to saving on plane tickets. He tells us, “Change your city of arrival to the closest port of arrival that may be available at a cheaper price. For instance, if a ticket to Zurich is too expensive, you can opt to land in Venice and then travel to Zurich by rail or road . That way, you save on airfare and also get to experience a new place.” Also remember that connecting flights, because of their longer travel time, are sometimes cheaper than direct flights.

Planning a vacation has never been easier, because there are applications that you can access on your smart phone, computer or tablet to make planning a breeze. Here are a few that we love:

getting a visa While the process and documents required for visa applications change with the country you’re visiting, there are certain things that you must remember. Find out about the visa procedure for the country you plan to visit, the moment you’ve decided on going there. Sometimes, it might take as long as a few months for you to get a visa. All consulates have websites with extremely simple instructions and requirements — so much so that you won’t even need an agent. With tourist visas, most countries usually ask for residence and identity proof as well as proof of your ability to fund your entire trip. Make sure that you have a valid passport before you apply for a visa, or you will end up wasting a few days. Applying for a new passport or renewing an old one will usually take two-three weeks.

n Foreign currency is one aspect that is usually overlooked. If you’d like to avoid unnecessary taxes and duties that will pop up when you use your normal debit/ credit card in a foreign country, remember that you can buy foreign exchange (forex) before you leave for your holiday. All banks — private as well as state owned — let you buy forex either in the form of cash (currency notes or travellers cheques) or a prepaid card — usually Visa or MasterCard — that you can use as a debit card to make payments as well as withdraw money through ATMs. While you can buy forex from any bank, buying it from the one where you already have an account will be a much simpler process.

n

city guides: The full name of this application is why we love it — City Guides, Offline Maps. It’s a great way to explore, saving whatever you think

checking your documents We’re going to explain visas to you, but before we do, here’s what you need to check and double check before you even think of jet-setting across the world. n Make sure that you have identification, even if you’re just travelling around the state or to a domestic destination. n Most countries require visas (read our box to find out how to get one), so make sure that you plan your trip at least two months in advance. n Passports are mandatory! Check immediately whether yours is valid, even if you’re not planning any immediate travel. n Make sure that the identification you have is photo identification as most places ask for those now. n Remember to get your travellers cheque, converted money and debit or credit cards (make sure they are international) in order before you travel. n Apply for an international driver’s licence if you’re planning on renting a car. n Carry immunisation documents if you are travelling to countries where you need to take shots before you enter. It’s

more important when you’re travelling to or from developed to developing/ underdeveloped countries. n Several countries require at least a six month passport validity period from the date of return. Before you book, double check all the information — including dates, times, destination airport and total cost after additional charges.

>> Pack light to avoid exceeding the weight limit when you’re flying

n

Losing/ misplacing or forgetting your travel documents can ruin your entire vacation. To prevent this from happening, always make duplicates. Also, email yourself all your important documents, including airline tickets, passports, health certificates, your license and visas. Leave copies with someone who can help you out if you lose any documents. And make sure you get a proper travel pouch to keep them all safely. Don’t leave passport holders on tables or stash them in your pockets. Always keep your money and your documents separately. If you do lose a document, contact the Indian embassy before you do anything else — the sooner you do it the less hassle it will be.

Packing light is important not just to ensure you don’t end up paying for excess baggage charges, but also so that lugging around your bags doesn’t hamper your holiday. These tips will help: n Go cordless: Okay not completely, but remember that wires and chargers might not add much weight, they will be a hassle to sort through if you carry too many of them. So, try and get adapters for your gadgets that you can use with one, standard wire. n Limit the bag: Instead of limiting the items in your suitcase, limit the number of bags you carry. This ensures that once your bags are full, you’ll either have to take out stuff to pack something that you need or avoid carrying anything extra at all. Either way, you win! n Factor in the weight of clothes: You might not realise it when you hold a shirt or a skirt in your hand, but once you’ve finished packing all your

l A first aid kit is important. Whether you’re carrying it with you (domestic travel) or putting it together when you reach your destination, make sure that you have bandages, adhesive tape, cotton balls, safety pins, creams for burns, cuts and scrapes and antibiotic creams to prevent allergy. l When you’re travelling within the country, don’t forget to pack things such as antacids, anti-nausea medication, allergy medication, nasal sprays, antihistamines and basic cold and flu medication. l You need to get prescriptions for any medication that you need to carry — even if you’re carrying anti-malaria medicine to a country where contracting malaria is a risk. Make sure you carry enough because you’re not going to be able to buy it without a prescription. Make copies of your prescriptions just in case. l Make sure you know what medicines are banned in which countries. What is legal here might be banned in Europe — you need to be aware before you travel. l Pack your prescription medication in your carry-on luggage, in their original packaging.

clothes, you’ll realise how much weight they carry. Remember that wool is heavier than materials such as cotton and linen and jeans are heavier than trousers. So, as long as the weather is suitable, carry light-weight clothes. n Be stringent: Think three or four times, if you have to, about whether you need something. You want to carry two-three books, but are you really going to read them? Do you really need all your makeup? Your first response might be yes, but if you really put your mind to it, you can weed out items that you won’t need much over during your vacation. n Disposables: From toiletries to towels, you can get several items that you think you need, either free, or at a cheap price from your hotel or convenience stores at your destination. So, avoid carrying personal items that you know you can buy there and only focus on things that are necessary.

“Sonam iS a great hoSt” Pakistani actor and singer, Fawad Khan is set to make his Bollywood debut with Khoobsurat, opposite Sonam Kapoor. Rohit Pramar caught up with him to talk about his role

n Tell us about your role. I play a Rajput prince in the film. He is disciplined and ambitious. It’s based on Captain Von Trapp from Sound Of Music. Christopher Plummer was amazing in that role. I really enjoyed playing the character. n What was the experience like when you were shooting for the film? It was exceptional; I had a blast! I met so many people and made new friends. I think it’s marvellous. n How was working with Sonam Kapoor like? To start with, she is a great host. She is very positive and knows how to make you comfortable. I was completely new here and I think Sonam understood it. She has been very supportive. n Did you get to travel around in India? I visited several places while working on this film. We shot in Jaipur, Bikaner and Mumbai. The desert was really beautiful. Seeing such a huge fo rtress and then the desert, was a brilliant, contrasting experience. I hope to travel more in the future. n You are also an exceptional singer. How did you start?

Honestly, I just stumbled upon it. I remember when I was in college, there used to be an underground movement at our campus, where people would jam together. We started jamming together. At that time for me, it was all just a distraction. But that’s how it all started for me. n What do you enjoy the most — acting or singing? I love writing and composing music. Music comes to me first. I have had a seven-year career in music, so it means a lot to me. n Do you plan to stick around in Bollywood? I never plan. I just like to go with whatever comes my way. So, if something interesting comes by, I’ll see. But after this film, I plan to go back to Pakistan. I’ve got something going on there. n How do you stay fit and healthy? I try my best, as I am diabetic. A few years back I used to eat everything and never bothered about my weight. But, I finally dared myself to lose all my body fat and I went from a waist size of 37 to 30. It was a great boost for me as I felt much healthier. I am more dedicated to staying healthy now.

We recommend you catch the show now, because there might not be another iteration of this act — ever. Why, you ask? Danesh explains it best, saying, “The Last Parsi is probably my last day alive, because I’m going to get into a lot of trouble with everyone I speak of.” Jokes aside, the act is also a great way to understand Zoroastrian culture, as Danesh has a segment for those who do not know about the Parsi community. So, it wouldn’t be wrong to expect that he will be breaking a few myths about Pars is, right? Well, Danesh tells us that would be true if there were any myths to bust in the first place. He explains, “What myths? It’s all true! Every word of it. Happy Planet, a space that recently set up shop at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla, is a happy place for parents as well as children. Yamini Walia visited to see if it lives up to its name

W

ith so many activity centers for children opening up across Mumbai, it’s difficult for a new one to set itself apart. But, what if the space offers something for parents as well? That’s right, Happy Planet is a one-stop recreational zone for both children and their parents, raising the bar for recreational spaces in the city. The location of Happy Planet at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla, is rather perfect. Hamley’s is situated right next to the store, so your children are bound to catch a glimpse and want to visit. Also, it’s on the same floor as PVR Cinemas, which garners a massive crowd through the week — giving them a great target audience. Happy Planet is not an enclosed space, so you can walk-in as and when you like. As soon as I entered, I could hear the chirpy, happy sounds of all the children enjoying themselves in the activity center. It’s quite large and includes a variety of fun zones and games for both children and their parents. The adventure zone, named Rocky’s Adventure Zone, consists of Bump Your Way (bumper cars), Aerial Adventure (rope course) and Scale the Mighty

Wall (rock climbing). This zone not only improves motor skills, it also builds mental abilities (such as concentration) and enhances your child’s thought process. Other fun areas at Happy Planet include Zorb All the Way with Piro, which gives you the opportunity to roll in a giant, inflatable ball; Bowl Your Way, which is a giant version of bowling, where you have to sit in an inflatable ball and roll down to hit the pins; Fast Bucks, which gives you the option to snag fake cash, coupons and gift certificates; Shoot The Ball, where you will get 12 chances to shoot at 10 balls of the same colour and Geeko’s Speeding Cars, which resembles go-karting. Fast Bucks is something that is extremely new and unique. I tried my hand at Shoot The Ball and successfully hit 10 balls of the same colour. Ecstatic with my performance, I moved on to learn about Bouncy’s Crèche. The area boosts of more than 20 activities, with two huge inflatable bouncers to entertain children of all ages. This area will help improve your

B for... Biryani! le Berian is a new biryani delivery service that recently set up shop in lokhandwala. Dev goswami tries what they have on offer and gives you his verdict

B

iryani makes for a good lunch option, even when you’re at work — that is, as long as rice doesn’t make you drowsy. It is quick to eat, not too messy and fills you up while giving you a serving of carbohydrates as well as protein in one dish. And of course, ordering a kilo (or several!) of biryani for house parties is one of the oldest tricks in the book. So, the idea of a biryani delivery service is definitely exciting and I was really looking forward to trying what Le Berian had on offer. First things first, the menu was quite impressive, with as many as nine types of biryani on offer. There are two vegetarian biryani dishes on the menu, but for the most part, you can look forward to varieties of chicken and lamb, along with egg, fish and prawn preparations. What really >> The Bohri Lamb Biryani was our favourite among the nine impressed me were the prices — varieties that we tried half plate of biryani is priced around From the three chicken unlike the Paneer Roast Masala. Gourmet teas from Tea Culture of the World

T

ea Culture of the World is the latest entrant to the everincreasing space of gourmet teas, catering to Indian tea aficionados. With tea culture taking the city by storm (high tea, anyone?) there was no way we could pass on the opportunity to sample a few key flavours from the brand, which is the brainchild of the CEO of Iron Buddha Company Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Rupali Ambegaonkar. What stands out about the brand almost instantly, is the fact that they have a range of tea flavours you’ve probably never even heard of. Think Lemon Mojito, Rose Green, Holy Basil, Moroccan Mint... They do have regulars of course, including English Breakfast, Darjeeling and Masala Tea, but we were instantly drawn to the more unusual varieties. Unfortunately, we didn’t try the Holy Basil, which looks promising. We did however sample the Rose Green, Moroccan Mint and Lemon Mojito. The brand’s packaging is gorgeous — brightly coloured paper boxes that open to reveal triangular sachets of whole leaf tea, complete with little bits of whatever flavour you’ve opted for. The Lemon Mojito, our favourite from the three that we tried, was a refreshing green tea, complete with sharp hints of lemon. The little mint twang at the end was quite a surprise, but not overpowering. The Moroccan Mint was a very strong blend and is best suited to those who really like mint tea — I don’t. The Rose Green on the other hand was a surprise hit, with gentle rose notes wafting up

>> The extensive variety of tea’s are all well packaged in vibrantly coloured boxes, with individual tea bags inside from your steaming cup. All three types can be consumed cold as well — you’ll need to use two bags instead of the customary single. Their tea options include blends to help you cool down, help digestion, awaken your senses and lose weight, along with a stress busting tea with bits of lavender and sage that’s next on our list to try. >> Lemon Grass which recently evolved into Lemon Leaf, has made a few delicious additions to it’s menu

Delight lemon grass, a popular Pan-asian restaurant in Bandra, has now evolved into lemon leaf. yamini Walia visited the revamped space to see what’s new

I

f you live in Bandra, you’ve probably had at least one meal at Lemon Grass. The restaurant re-branded itself as Lemon Leaf so quickly that even regular customers didn’t see the usual closed shutters, which signal a restaurant’s changing face. The new look incorporates Chinese lanterns and bright green walls, inducing an Asian forest vibe. They have both airconditioned and al fresco sections — I chose to sit in the breezy area outside. We started with their signature sangrias — the Melon Sangria (`390), a mixture of white wine, mint and apple juice, and the Rose Spritzer (`350), a mix of red wine, with green apple slices, orange wedges, mint leaves and Sprite. While the white wine was par excellence, I didn’t enjoy the red. To wash down the wine, we ordered their Thai Style Spiced Cold Coffee (`150), which was delicious and is a great option, as long as you like a sweet and spicy combination. We tried a variety of dumplings including the Sticky Rice Dumpling with Spicy Chicken filling (`315), Tibetan Style Momo with Spicy Soyabean & Spring Onion (`285), Minced Beef Dumpling (`295), Whole Prawn & Chive Dumpling (`395) and Crystal Dumpling with Shitake Mushrooms & Water Chestnuts (`285). While the Soyabean was quite average, the rest were top-notch. My favourite was the minced beef dumpling, as the meat was cooked well and the flavours were delectable. If you are a vegetarian, or simply fond of mushrooms, their mushroom dumpling is a must-try. We also sampled the Vietnamese Rice Paper Roll stuffed with Grilled Chicken in Lettuce & Mint (`275), served with a tasty, spicy-sweet dip. Our main course included the melt-in-the-mouth Vietnamese Style Spicy Banana Leaf Smoked Fish (`395), with chilly and tomatoes, served with sticky rice. However, if you can’t handle spice, steer clear of this. We were full to bursting, but still tried the Creamy Coconut Custard in Almond Biscuit (`200). The almond biscuit crust, rich in coconut, was the star of this dish. The staff at Lemon Leaf is knowledgeable, friendly and prompt — which is something we appreciate. Lemon Leaf maintains the same quality as Lemon Grass, but manages to pack in a few new additions that warrant a visit to try out. What we like: The application helps you to conceal dark circles and control shine. availability: Android (free) and iOS (free)

Nifty Reconquers 8100 Levels

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (September 19, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (September 18, 2014) a net 139.25 points (1.75%) and closed at the 8114 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 7950 points level. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 7939 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.00 p.m. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 8120 points level at 3.24 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 181 points and closed above the psychologically important 8100 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were gainers, while just 4 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in realty, consumer durables, capital goods and auto stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 14.64%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1264 were gainers, 317 were losers and 40 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is flat while the Market Index is rising. No signal here.

support is at the 7816 points level. The next support is at the 7615 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8138 points level. The next resistance is at the 8246 points level.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviving a Rs 10,000 crore gas pipeline to take gas to the east, Fertilizer Ministry is planning to set up two urea plants along the pipeline route. The 2,050-km pipeline from Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal will pass through Varanasi, Modi's constituency, and 16 other eastern cities. The pipeline will provide CNG and PNG services in these cities and provide feedstock gas to fertilizer plants in the region. "We are exploring the possibility of setting up two fertiliser plants along the Jagdispur-Haldia gas pipeline, with investment of around Rs 10,000 cr," Fertilizer Secretary J K Mohapatra told PTI.

AIBC Appoints MP Lodha As Chairman

All India Business Council (AIBC) has appointed Mangal Prabhat Lodha as its Chairman. S.P. Jain will be the president of the council. Mathurdas, Founder, AIBC, made these announcements. AIBC works as a bridge between government and traders. Commenting on Lodha’s appointment, Mathurdas said,” We welcome Lodha on board. I am extremely happy, and confident that he will take AIBC to a new height. His experience as a businessman and a politician will help better coordination between the state government, central government and business communities”.

Arun Firodia’s Philosophy

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8058 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7996. Support (2) = 7877. Resistance (1) = 8177. Resistance (2) = 8240. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above its 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages in a single session. The index is now above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages and all the four averages are rising. Moreover, the velocity parameters, which were negatively trended, have now turned neutral. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Technically, since the downwards risk seems to have reduced, Investors may consider buying in small quantities in shares that are fundamentally sound and have a long- term potential.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 8034) Positive. Has crossed above its 15-day average (at 8069) Positive. Has crossed above its 25-day average (at 7990) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6958) Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a neutral market but with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main Disclaimer: Investment recommendations made in ‘ADC’ are for information purposes only and derived from sources that are deemed to be reliable but their accuracy and completeness are not guaranteed. ‘ADC’ or the analyst/writer does not accept any liability for the use of this column for the buying or selling of securities. would surpass 3,800 by 2020. This forecast reflects the current wealth distribution in the wider ultra high-net-worth (UHNW) population and the possibility of certain sectors, such as technology, becoming increasingly profitable. This year's forecast for future billionaire growth also incorporated different confidence levels, to account for possible changes in global economic circumstances affecting wealth accumulation. In the most bullish scenario, there would be over 4,100 billionaires by 2020, an increase of 78% on their current levels. In the most conservative scenario, the global billionaire population will rise to around

tinue to develop and mature," the report said. Between 2012 and 2013, the number of billionaires grew by just 0.5%, while between 2013 and 2014, it increased by as much as 7.1%. Such large variations in the growth rate of billionaire population are not unexpected, as a significant portion of billionaires' wealth is not necessarily correlated to global wealth conditions, the report said. "Due to this volatility, movements of UHNW individuals between the billionaire and demi-billionaire (defined as those with a net worth between USD 500 and USD 999 million) clubs are frequent, the report added.

India’s First Inflation-Linked Securities Index Launched The CRISIL IIGS Index, a first for the Indian bond market seeks to track the performance of a portfolio of inflation-linked securities issued by the Government By A Business Reporter

A

n Inflation Indexed Government Securities Index (CRISIL IIGS Index), a first for the Indian bond market, which seeks to track the performance of a portfolio of inflation-linked securities issued by the Government of India has been launched. CRISIL believes the index will provide market participants an appropriate and easily accessible benchmark to measure and analyse the performance of such securities. A Total Return Index, the CRISIL IIGS Index seeks to capture returns on inflation-linked securities due to

coupon accruals and price change, both adjusted for inflation. Currently, there is one such security, the 1.44% Inflation Indexed Government Stock 2023 (linked to Wholesale Price Index) issued in June 2013. Such securities provide inflation protection on both principal and coupon (interest) payments. CRISIL already provides daily valuation of such securities to investors including mutual funds for determination of Net Asset Value of funds. Says Sandeep Sabharwal, Senior Director, Capital Market: “Since its launch in 2013, the inflation-linked government security has gained some popularity in the mutual funds space. Two inflation-linked funds have already been launched and a few are in the pipeline. We believe the CRISIL IIGS Index will meet the need for an appropriate benchmark index for these funds. The launch comes as part of CRISIL’s ongoing effort to develop and maintain representative indices for the Indian debt market. In addi-

tion to this index, CRISIL currently maintains 37 indices across bond, gilts, money market, hybrid and commodity segments, which are used by asset managers for benchmarking their products and portfolios. All CRISIL indices are public indices with details on index performance and portfolio constituents available on the CRISIL website (www.crisil.com) daily. Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research, said, the “Launch of the index further endorses CRISIL’s status as a pioneer in debt and hybrid indices in India. This index is expected to serve both as a benchmark and underlying index for investment products such as index funds. CRISIL will continue to develop indices that help market participants gauge the performance of different asset classes and make investment decisions in an otherwise shallow debt market.

‘And Then One Day’, in the life of Naseer...

T

he vibrant, agile-as-ever melody-queen Asha Bhosle who recently completed 81 years insisted that energy-wise, her “age is the mirror-image of the digits 18 years”, as she sang to her heart’s content at a live concert show in the city last Sunday. Although she belted out most of her chart-buster numbers and a few lesser known, being her personal favourites (like the seductive ‘Ikk Baar Jaane Jaana’ from ‘Kaala Sona’) she admitted that she was not her usual perfect form that evening. Recovering from a bout of bronchitis, she declared,

Is there evil eye on Asha Bhosle? N “Mera galaa kharaab hua tha. Lagta hai mujhe kisiki nazar lag gayi”, she jestfully added. Jogging into a flashback, she recalled how when she was a nine-year-old, her classical maestro father Master Deenanath Mangeshkar diligently trained her. “It's all thanks to my father that I built my foundation ‘taaqat’ with classical vocals, which in turn helped me put in maximum ‘mehnat’ and emerge a versatile singer who could

sing a ghazal, a qawwali, a romantic number or a sultry cabaret song with equal ease over the past several decades,” insists the singer who feels that being unconventional and taking a risk, sometimes fetches you instant success, when there is tough competition. Daring to deviate from her Bollywood filmy repertoire, madame Bhosle sang two of Deenanath’s yesteryear Marathi drama songs ‘Shoora

Mee Vandile’ and ‘Yuvati Manaa’ and received a thunderous ovation as she rendered the breath-taking ‘chakritaan’ portions of those vintage tracks. Regaling her fans with her hilarious mimicking of a galaxy of legendary voices including her own sibling Latadidi, she later waltzed onto a serious track. “All these active 80 years I have experienced everything in life. As long as I am alive, my live concerts

shows must go on. My wish is that I should die with my singing boots on,” she said as an emotionally-stunned audience responded with applause. Departing from her embargo of not celebrating her birthdays in public, Asha made an exception that evening, when she accepted the gift of an 81-diyastudded lamp as the housefull auditorium burst into a chorus, ‘Happy Birthday to you’ .

aseeruddin Shah's memoir 'And Then One Day' is a candid recount of almost four decades of his life. The actor is happy that it is being appreciated though he says it may ruffle a few feathers in the film industry. One of the most formidable actors in Hindi cinema, Shah started writing about his life in 2002 but was not sure about its quality so he kept postponing it. "It's gratifying...the reaction that I am getting for the

book. A lot of people who have read the book have liked it including Shyam Benegal, Girish Karnad, Ramchandra Guha and my brothers. So I am happy if that is the case. Though I suspect it will ruffle a few feathers in the film industry but that is not of any concern to me," Shah told PTI in an interview. When asked why he was hesitant to release the book, he said, "I did not think that it would of any interest to anybody. I needed another opinion so I gave it to Guha...he encouraged me very much and I took that seriously because he himself is a very good writer. I thought if someone like him finds my book readable, then others will also like to read it. That's why I completed it." The 64-year-old actor said he is not sure whether he will come up with the second part of the story. "I am not planning anything. I did not plan this one either.”

Richa Chaddha outlawed in ‘Tamanchey’ Richa made her Bollywood debut with the comedy-drama film ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ She was praised for her performance in the 2012 crime thriller ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and its sequel, for which she was awarded the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She has also been a part of popular films like ‘Ram Leela’, ‘Benny Aur Babloo’, ‘Fukrey’, etc. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the multi-faceted actor about her film ‘Tamanchey’ which is releasing soon. NO BOLLYWOOD FOR MAHIRA YET

M

ahira Khan who will be soon seen on Indian television with her hit Pakistani drama 'Humsafar', has denied that she will make her Bollywood debut opposite actor Ranveer Singh. The 30-year-old actress said she has been offered Bollywood films but she has not signed anything so far. “This is not true, I am not doing any Bollywood films. I don't know from where such rumours have surfaced. In fact, a lot of things keep getting written and shared online and I am upset about it," Mahira told PTI from Karachi. The actress says she would like to follow in the footsteps of her 'Humsafar' co-star and close friend Fawad Khan and work in India. "Actors love to do good work irrespective of country and borders. It is just that I am quite picky when it comes to roles."

'Humsafar' has generated a lot of excitement before going on air. "When it aired in Pakistan, there was no hype. All the craze started after it got released. I am surprised, this is a new feeling for me. I just hope it lives up to the hype. Sometimes I feel like saying, 'please don't be that excited... Let it come first,'" said Mahira, who plays Khirad Ehsan, a middle-class girl with a loving heart and strong sense of selfesteem in the drama. 'Humsafar', which is a story about trials and tribulations of Khirad is also remembered for the crackling chemistry between Fawad and Mahira. "Our friendship is a recent one. We have now grown close. At that time we were not friends but we had a certain comfort level and both of us trusted each other as actors," said the actress, who calls Fawad her favourite hero.

There has been a lot of buzz about ‘Tamanchey’... Yes, with people and stars like Salman Khan associating with it and the music of the film catching up, the film is a hot proposition in the trade. The Bappi Lahiri remix song, ‘Mahaan Pyaar Me Dil Pe Maar De Goli’, is a big hit and the music director Krsna has done a fantastic job.

What is 'Tamanchey' all about? It is about two petty outlaws running away from the police. It’s a passionate acidic love story between them. Nikhil Dwivedi and I play the two outlaws, Babu (me) and Munna (Nikhil Dwivedi) in a backdrop of gangsters, violence and crime. It’s got a quirky and spontaneous story line which shows the constant back and forth struggle between Babu and Munna as they fight the odds in order

Where was the film shot? The film was mostly shot in the rugged locales of Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, and even Mumbai.

You were recently in the dock for not promoting ‘Tamanchey’. Yes. But I did my best with what I could, but the Lucknow schedule of ‘Ek Aur Devdas’ got extended and I had to stay back to complete the shoot. I conveyed my apologies to the producers. But now that I am back in Mumbai, I will go all out to promote the film. Looking back, what has been the high point of your career? Winning the Filmfare Critics award for ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. Anurag Kashyap has been like a mentor to me and I will always be grateful to what he has done for my career. Richa Chaddha is a welcome addition to Bollywood!

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

verybody loves a good fight and Deepika Padukone put up a good one this week—good in the sense her adversary was a major media group, and she managed to get her Bollywood colleagues to support her. In case someone hasn’t followed the Twitter war that spilled all over social media and out of it too, it started with a tweet by the said media group with a photo of Deepika revealing some cleavage, that said, “OMG Deepika’s cleavage show.” Her angry retort was, “Yes! I am a Woman. I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem?” And that triggered off an explosion of responses, mostly congratulating her on her boldness, and some expressing disgust at the offending tweet. The first “OMG” tweet was incredibly stupid and juvenile, and Deepika would have been right in making fun of that. But by linking respect or disrespect for women based on their clothes, she opened up another debate altogether. If a woman is wearing a revealing dress – and actresses do dress for attention, it’s part of their

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot stardom package – and someone comments on it, is that automatically offensive and disrespectful towards women? If a woman is all covered up, does she automatically command more respect? What is far worse is when the media makes fun of women for being plump, or frumpy, or not “hot” enough. One doesn’t see Deepika or anyone coming out in support of this kind of destructive sexism. During her modeling career, Deepika has appeared on calendars in tiny bikinis, flaunting her body. She and many actress of her

generation are constantly photographed in skimpy outfits that they wear on and off screen, and their “hotness” casually commented on. Today’s actors – male and female – get a lot of media attention due to their bodies, six pack, size zero and what not. So much so, that this has a detrimental effect on the minds of youngsters. Boys and girls starve or ingest toxic substances to get bodies like the stars routinely bare. But this focus on skin over talent doesn’t bother anyone, and you don’t hear angry comments. The film industry is bla-

tantly sexist, with just a token respect for women. Once an actress is over a certain age, and no longer bikini-ready, she is nudged out. You don’t hear anyone speaking up for them? Or for victims of the notorious casting couch. All things considered and no disrespect towards the choices Deepika has made, in this case, the lady did protest too much!

Villains are better etched-out in movies now: Prem Chopra

P

rem Chopra, best remembered for his villainous roles in Hindi cinema of the '60s and '70s, feels baddies in Bollywood nowadays are better written and are not just about having menacing laugh and feisty one-liners. The 78-year-old actor terrorised the audience in films like 'Aaj Ka Arjun', 'Do Raaste', 'Bobby', in which he mouthed the famous dialogue 'Prem Naam Hai Mera. Prem Chopra'. "Previously there were heroes and villains – the former was all about chocolate boy looks, good behaviour while the latter was all about negativity.

It was a challenge to ‘WANT TO DO FILMS dance with Hrithik: Kat H

rithik Roshan, considered one of the best dancers in Bollywood is seen doing some high octane dance moves in his next 'Bang Bang' and his co-star Katrina Kaif says she had to try hard to match up to the actor. The 31-year-old actress is playing the female lead in the action thriller, which is the official remake of the Hollywood film 'Knight and Day' starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. "Dancing with Hrithik was the biggest challenge. His flexibility is incredible. It is at a different level altogether. You have to be really good to match up to his energy. He has natural energy when he dances. It comes to him so effortlessly," Katrina said during the launch of the title track of the film here on Wednesday night. When asked who was the better dancer in the song among the two, the 'Dhoom 3' actress said till the time of the rehearsals

she was doing fine, but Hrithik just blew everyone away during the final shoot. "I was ok during rehearsals because Hrithik was not dancing! Finally when we danced on the sets, we all know who danced better," said the actress, adding the title song 'Bang Bang' is one of her favourite tracks.

THAT SCARE ME’ C

ommercial Bollywood films may be his "bread and butter" but Emraan Hashmi says he is keen to take risks and do projects that scare him as a performer post his "creatively satisfying" turns in 'Shanghai' and Danis Tanovic's upcoming movie 'Tigers'. Hashmi's performance in the Oscar-winning director's real-life inspired drama has earned him a lot of praise in the international media following its world premiere at the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival. "I understand that mainstream cinema is

very important for me. It's my bread and butter but once a year, I want to do a film like 'Tigers' which excites me and scares me as an actor. Risks are big chaos but if you go down the beaten path it means the death of your art and creativity as an actor," Hashmi told PTI in an interview. The actor, who not long ago was slotted as a serial-kisser, is working hard to avoid getting trapped into a particular image. He now wishes there

Nowadays the villains that we see in films are very layered..." Chopra told PTI. After a slew of negative roles in films, the veteran actor started taking up positive characters from 1996. Since then he has starred in films like 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke' and 'Golmaal 3', among others. In the 2012 Saif Ali Khanstarrer 'Agent Vinod', Chopra played a don. "I deliberately made a transition from doing villainous roles to positive characters. I felt as an actor if you want to increase you shelf life, you have to do all kind of work just like Pran sahib. He did one positive role and his career was enhanced by many years," Chopra said. were more Bollywood stars willing to take such risks. "Before 'Shanghai' I played these urban, cool roles in thrillers. No one expected me to do a 'Shanghai' and this is why I chose that film. Box office is important but sometimes you need films that change things. They are not as much about money as about intent and 'Tigers' is one such film," Emraan said. "I just hope there are more Bollywood actors who are willing to take risks. Somehow they are always chasing numbers at the box office. “The benchmark of success is very different in Bollywood," he added. The actor was happy to see the film receive a standing ovation from the audience at TIFF. He also met Aamir Raza, the Pakistani salesman whose life he has portrayed in the movie.

MUMBAI SIGNS LJUNGBERG FOR ISL Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

M

UMBAI: Mumbai City FC announced the signing of the outstanding Freddie Ljungberg as the marquee player for the inaugural season of the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL). Karl Fredrik Ljungberg, better known as Freddie Ljungberg, is a former Swedish National Team Captain and a midfielder who has been a critical part of football clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham United and Halmstads BK. His presence at Mumbai City FC will ensure the team has a strong midfield with Ljungberg comfortable playing on either wing in midfield. Ljungberg is recognized the world over for his skill and contribution to the sport when he was part of Arsenal’s feared lineup in the early part of this millennium. For several seasons, he played a major role for the club including being a member of the unbeaten 49 game run for the team. In 2008, Arsenal's manager Arsène Wenger placed Ljungberg 11th in Arsenal Gunners' Greatest 50 Players. For his home country of Sweden, Ljungberg has earned 75

As a former Sweden captain and Arsenal great, the world football fraternity understands what he is worth and I’m sure Mumbai’s football fans will be delighted with his presence in FREDDIE LJUNGBERG the team. He will enrich us MUMBAI CITY FC with his talent and experi-

ence and we look forward to seeing him making Mumbai proud in the coming season.” Freddie Ljungberg said, “Mumbai City FC presents a thrilling opportunity to play in India and I’m glad to be part of the team in the very first Indian Super League season. Talented Indian players together with the likes of Anelka, Friedrich, Cmovš and others will make the team an exciting outfit and I look forward to contributing to the team’s success.” Ever since the Vittsjö born talent started playing football, he was credited as being someone who was remarkably capable for his age and a player who would pass the ball to his friends so that they would have a chance to score. Ljungberg was signed by Arsenal in 1998 for £3 million, which at the time was the highest transfer fee ever for a Swedish player. Arsenal scouts watched him for over a year and Wenger took the unusual step of authorizing the signing after watching Ljungberg play for Sweden in their victory against England on television, without seeing him play live.

Time for AITA to get its act right

ndian tennis has reached an all time low since the past two years with their fortunes continuing to plument on the national front. Whether it is the disagreements on choosing their partners to play in the Olympics or the more recent issue - the mass pullout from the Asian Games. It is a well-known fact that most players across the globe have to fend for themselves with regards to training, travelling and accommodation. Most of the players on the Association of Tennis Professionals [ATP] circuit don't mind turning up in the national colours for the Davis Cup ties as it is the only team event which they earn ATP points unlike the Asiad, CWG or even the Olympics. However, there have been mounting differeces when it comes it medal events among the Indian tennis fraternity. The event to suffer is the Asian Games where the All India Tennis Association will be fielding a below par contingent for the Games in Incheon. Leanden Paes, Somdev Devverman and Rohan Bopanna have attributed protection of their points and improvement of their ranking by playing the ATP events. A change of heart by Sania Mirza has now created some hope in the women's events. Until recently, there were attempts by the AITA to convince Paes to be part of the Incheon trip. But, Paes citing family disputes, said he could not represent the country. So if he could change his decision and play the Davis Cup tie against Serbia, why can't he do it again? The irony is the Anil Khanna, president, AITA has

come out in full support of his wards playing in ATP and WTA events. So, if he pats the back of all the players, then who will represent India and win medals. And why is he still holding on to his position if he cannot get their house in order. The controversy of the pre-Olympics selection of 2012 is still fresh in the minds where the AITA failed to understand the players priorities regarding who they were partnering in the preOlympic events. The selection snowballed in to a major mess, which was there for all the world to see. That it resulted in below par performances which was also there for all to see. So the questions that arises. Why is there such a mess in the first place and did'nt the tennis players inform the federation about their itnerary and didn't the federation pass on the information to the ministry of sports? Why did they have to wait for the provisional list to come out, and then realise their dates were clashing with events on the professional circuit. So if anyone of them have been caught napping, whether its the AITA or the tennis players themselves, the sports ministry and the Sports Authority of India should take immediate cognizance of such instances, and conduct an inquiry and bring the guilty to book. It's still not too late for the AITA to act and put their house in order!

UMBAI: A deluge of goals was witnessed during the Super Division match between Indian Oil and Central Secretariat in PMC Bank-MHAL (Mumbai Hockey Association Limited) League – 2014, played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, here, on Thursday. Indian Oil produced a very strong combined performance to inflict a crushing 14-1 defeat on Central Secretariat in hopelessly one-sided contest before heavy rains lashed the city and delayed the start of the third match. Left midfielder Lalit Upadhyay played a stellar role for the airmen scoring a hat-trick, while Gaganpreet Singh, Sameer Dad and Arjun

INDIA AIMING TO MAKE MARK WITH

BIG MEDAL HAUL IN INCHEON By S S Ramaswamy

NCHEON: Bolstered by a better-than-expected performance in the Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes would now look to assert themselves against the sporting might of continental powerhouses such as China and Japan in the 17th Asian Games commencing here today. A total haul of 64 medals in the CWG held in July-August, which included 15 of the golden hue, should act as the ideal springboard for the Indian contingent to better the medal tally claimed at Guangzhou, China, four years ago. However, the reality is that Asian Games is far tougher to excel in than CWG, barring a few disciplines, especially with the Chinese juggernaut set to roll once again followed by the might of South Korea, Japan and a few other countries, including the ones belonging to to the erstwhile Soviet Bloc. In 2010, the total medals scooped by the Indian contingent at the Asiad was 65 -comprising 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze -- a month after a record haul of 101, including 38 gold, in the CWG held in New Delhi. The sizeable heist in Guangzhou piloted the country to a highly creditable sixth spot on the table which was topped by hosts China with a staggering haul of 199 gold medals. The sixth place finish in Guangzhou was India's best in Asian Games history

India ended up eighth in 2002 when South Korea previously hosted the Games and retained it four years later in Doha, Qatar, before improving it by two rungs in Guangzhou, leading to the current optimism that the country has the capability to finish even in the top five. This time the government, on September 9, pruned down the size of the contingent, from what was sent to it by the Indian Olympic Asso-

ciation. The contingent is now 679-strong -– including 516 athletes -- from the initial 942 comprising 662 athletes and the rest officials. The size of the contingent is still quite big and would be seen in action in aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, rowing, sepaktakraw, shooting, squash, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, weightlifting, and yachting.

Sports Authority of India is confident that India will better the 2010 tally. "We got 64 medals at the recent Commonwealth Games and I must say it was a satisfying performance. For Asian Games, we are confident of touching the 70-medal mark which would be better than last time," SAI Director General Jiji Thomson has predicted but that view was aired before the depletion of the tennis team, in particular. SAI is expecting bulk of the medals from shooting (10-14 medals) and athletics (12-16). The country would also be

ASIAD BUZZ MISSING IN HOST CITY

NCHEON: The buzz is strangely missing as Incheon gears up to host the Asian Games from tomorrow with hardly any banners or volunteers in sight to welcome the athletes and delegates for the event which cost a whopping USD 1.62 billion. Barring banners in and around the airport, there is hardly anything to remind the visitors of the Games starting tomorrow and it seems another routine day or week of work for the common people of this city which is just 25km from capital Seoul which hosted the Asian Games in 1986. Banners are conspicuous by their absence once the airport is left behind in this sprawling city. This, in fact, is the third time that Korea is hosting the Asian Games, the second occasion being at Busan in 2002. What is not visible is the large number of volunteers at the airport who guide what is generally known as the "Asian Games

‘Gangnam Style’ welcome met Asiad opening by ‘Pyongyang Style’ silence NCHEON: North Korea were welcomed to the Asian Games today to the strains of "Gangnam Style", their athletes and officials gave a polite smile but put up a wall of stony silence in return. North Korean athletes looked on blankly as breakdancers performed to the international hit by South Korean star Psy. Their Singaporean, Chinese, Thai and Yemeni counterparts smiled and took pictures as dancers spun to the tune that has inspired more than two billion YouTube views. Only one North Korean woman dared the slightest handclap. In contrast, the North Korean delegation belted out the words to their national anthem, "Aegukga", or Patriotic Song, as the isolated state's flag was hoisted in the athletes village along with those of the other new arrivals. It was a unique occasion as normally anyone waving the North's flag or singing "Aegukga" in South Korea could face arrest under Seoul's strict national security law. North Korea's presence has been one of the main talking points ahead of the Asian Games, which officially open in Incheon on Friday. Their athletes and officials, mobbed by journalists at the flag-raising ceremony, appeared to be

under instruction to stay tight-lipped. A couple of burly minders were on hand to fend off persistent reporters.

Flag Removed Dressed in pristine white blazers and vivid blue trousers, and all wearing obligatory pin badges featuring North Korea's dead leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, the athletes responded to questions with polite smiles and total silence. Only one official broke ranks, saying when asked how the delegation felt about the event: "Just look, you can see for yourself." The North Koreans seemed bemused by the whole ceremony. The athletes were accompanied on their walk to the flag plaza at the village by clowns on stilts and unicyles, as well someone dressed up as one of the Games mascots -- Chumoro, a cuddly pink seal. As the North Koreans made their way from the plaza to their accommodation block they were surrounded by a rolling maul of camaramen, photographers and reporters -- but still kept mum. The North Korean flag has already proved contentious at the Games, with organisers saying they will confiscate any found on South Koreans entering any of the venues.

NCHEON: The opening ceremony of the 17th Asian Games here today is expected to be a grand affair showcasing Korea's past and future by using digital technology. "We will display Korea's past and future by combining the characters and identities of Korea with its digital technology," said South Korean film directors Im Kwon-Taek and Jang Jin, who are joint directors of the Games, in a statement. The theme song of the Games, featuring over 10,000 athletes from 45 countries, is "Dream of 4.5 billion People, One Asia".

Sumariwalla also exuded confidence that the Indian contingent would better its show in Guangzhou but did not want to predict the medal count. "We will do better than that but I can't say how many medals we will win," were his remarks on the subject. Sumariwala also said that the archery team had checked into the Games Village just as he was leaving for the flag hoisting ceremony and they were pretty confident of doing well.

The North Korean flag has already proved contentious at the Games, with organisers saying they will confiscate any found on South Koreans entering any of the venues.

to use digital technology for showcasing Korea

NCHEON: The opening ceremony of the 17th Asian Games here today is expected to be a grand affair showcasing Korea's past and future by using digital technology. "We will display Korea's past and future by combining the characters and identities of Korea with its digital technology," said South Korean film directors Im Kwon-Taek and Jang Jin, who are joint directors of the Games, in a statement. The theme song of the Games, featuring over 10,000 athletes from 45 countries, is "Dream of 4.5 billion People, One Asia".

NCHEON: The Indian tricolour was hoisted at the Asian Games Village in the presence of the Chef-deMission Adille Sumariwala, a day before the opening ceremony of the sporting extravaganza at the main stadium is scheduled to take place. Former sprinter Sumariwala, IOA vice-president Tarlochan Singh and more than 50 competititors, including the women's hockey squad, was present when the Indian flag was hoisted along with those of five other countries/region – Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Tajikstan, Chinese Taipei and Palestine. Sumariwala, while speaking to reporters ahead of the

ceremony, said that the Indian contingent members were quite satisfied with the accommodation though it was a bit cramped. As per accomodation, seven athletes are sharing three-bedroom apartments with two washrooms. According to one of the officials accompanying the contingent, the much-maligned Commonwealth Games in Delhi had much better arrangements for the athletes. The athletes, who reached in first batch were initially having problems with food but Sumariwalla said that it has been sorted out to some extent. "They complained

evision, quoted unnamed insiders as saying Li, 32, will announce her retirement because of injuries on Friday. "According to insiders, Li Na will officially announce her retirement on September 19," CCTV-5 said on its verified microblog. "She is reportedly retiring because she is unable to continue competing due to her

physical condition," it said. The broadcaster did not give any details about its sources. An employee at the Beijing office of IMG told AFP that Li's manager was in a meeting and unable to confirm. The world number six won the Australian Open in January but her season has been troubled by injury and she has been sidelined since

late July with a knee problem. She was ranked a careerhigh second in the world after January's Grand Slam win, but has slid down to sixth after missing a string of tournaments including the US Open. In July, Li also split with her influential coach Carlos Rodriguez. She initially planned to return at the inauguralWTA Wuhan Open, in her home

city, which begins Sunday. The Beijing News reported that Wuhan Open officials had received a confirmation letter from Li dropping out of the tournament. Organisers however told AFP no letter was received and to their knowledge Li was still playing. A press conference has been arranged for Sunday in Wuhan, AFP understands.
