rotesters demanding the fall of the Pakistani government blockaded parliament and key ministries on Wednesday in the latest round of a week-long political drama that has shaken the restive nucleararmed nation. Late evening developments however put the situation as having become less tense after the Pakistan Army indicated that it was not interested in staging a coup but was wanting to ensure that there was no irreversible breakdown of law and order. Earlier, Imran Khan and popular cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri had, on Tuesday, led follow-

ers in a late-night march on the parliament building, the culmination of a week-long standoff with prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Khan and Qadri contend that last year's general election that swept Sharif to power by a landslide was rigged, and they are demanding his resignation. Qadri repeated his demand for Sharif to quit and install a "national government", and ordered his followers to stop lawmakers leaving a national assembly sitting called to debate the crisis. His activists occupied the main entrances to parliament but the MPs left the building by a back entrance without incident.

aslok Hospital on Wednesday organised an International Cochlear Implant Symposium to demonstrate new surgical techniques by Prof Jacqueline Magnan and Prof J M Hans from France and Dr Dillon D'Souza and Dr Sandra Desa Souza from Jaslok Hospital. Five children, who underwent implant surgeries at this hospital in the last couple of years under Dr Sandra and Dr Dillon, demonstrated their ability to hear and speak during lectures given in the event. Also, three deaf children will be operated today for live surgical demonstrations. These kids hail from Maharashtra and MP. Besides operating live, a lecture was given on Bilateral Cochlear Implantation. Speaking about the Cochlear Implant (CI), Dr Sandra explained how it will help deaf children hear. “CI is an electronic device whose internal component is implanted during surgery while the external component is later worn on the body as a speech processor. With the implant, children born deaf can hear and be taught to speak while patients who become deaf after acquiring speech are given hearing so that they can continue living normally,” said Dr Sandra, who is also the Director of ENT at Jaslok Hospital. The implant which costs around Rs 5.32 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh will be given for free to those who cannot afford it. “The funds for these implants are sponsored by Tata Group, Siddhivinayak Temple Trust, Shirdi Saibaba Temple, Salman Khan etc. Even the PM fund is being used for this purpose,” said Dr Sandra.

f the 28 women who suffered from an adverse reaction after they were administered ceftriaxone and cefotaxime, antibiotics that are generally used for fever cases, on Monday evening at BMC-run Bhabha hospital in Kurla, one died on Tuesday night. Saira Sheikh (47) had been rushed to KEM hospital when she, like the others in the women's medicine ward, started exhibiting intense allergic reaction after being administered with the injection. She started experiencing a burning sensation in her body and uneasiness. Saira was the one whose condition was the most critical and on Tuesday night she passed away. Noor Mohammad Sheikh, husband of the deceased said, “Saira had been admitted to Bhabha hospital for typhoid. She had started feeling better and was to be discharged soon. On Monday evening, she was given an injection that had an adverse effect on her. And on Tuesday night she died.” The family alleges that the situation at Bhabha hospital was not well handled and that it was only after a wait of two hours that an ambulance got Saira to KEM hospital. “Saira was not vomitting like the other women who also suffered from the reaction to the drugs and so was kept on hold for some time for the transfer. Maybe this delay deteriorated her condition further and led to her death,” said Farid Khan, a relative of the deceased. Saira had to be shifted immediately to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) after reaching KEM

ental problems when detected at a later stage in life can be very expensive and can cause a lot of damage in a person, both physically and financially. The ADC interacted with well known dentists in the city to find out the cause for common dental problems in Indians and probably preventions and solutions. “There is less awareness about dental problems in India as compared to other countries and that is one of the main reasons for tooth problems at an early age. In other countries, salt is fluoridated and the fluoride level in water is also maintained. Unfortunately in India, the government this is not the case. We organise many check-ups in offices and schools and have noticed that the children in the municipal schools are malnourished and children in private schools have a lot of

hospital. “We had been told by the doctors at KEM that Saira's condition is very critical and that we pray that she recovers. Her vomit was green in colour and her Saira Sheikh tongue had turned black. We knew that her chances of survival were bleak,” said Noor Mohammed. The family is awaiting the post mortem report from state run JJ hospital and their statement has been taken by the Kurla Police. “We will find out what went

some revelations that have come to it from the doctors. The fact which needs answers is that these drugs have not been administered to the affected women for the first time and have been used at the hospital since July this year and that the same drugs from the same batch had been administered to four men in the men's ward two or three days before this incident happened but they did not have any reaction. “These are the questions which even we want answered. It is curious that the men did not show any reaction while so many women simultaneously developed such allergic reactions. This was not the first

wait for the report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to check if the problem was in the medicines.” As far as Saira's death is concerned, Dr Shubhangi Parker, Dean, KEM hospital, said, “She was very critical. Her platelet count had fallen drastically and all her parameters like blood pressure and pulse were unstable. She was in a septic shock syndrome. We did our best to save her but she passed away.” When asked about the cause of death, Dr Parker said, “The cause of death can be ascertained only after the post mortem report arrives. We are also awaiting the reports of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test that we had conducted on her because she had a history of fever and chills. There is an underlying pathology of fever. So right now, we cannot say for sure if the drug reaction caused the death or the underlying pathology is the cause or the death happened because the drug reaction aggravated the underlying condition. But yes, when she arrived at KEM, her blood reports revealed that Pancytopenia had already set in.” Pancytopenia is a medical condition in which there is a reduction in the number of red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. According to Dr Parker, it is a symptom for fever cases. AROUND THE CLOCK... Workers hang outside the clock face as they clean the Big Ben clock tower at the Houses of Parliament in London. AP/PTI

Facelift for Big Ben

Wearing ear plugs to muffle the chimes of Big Ben, a team of abseilers is busy this week cleaning the clock faces at the Houses of Parliament in London. Wearing hard hats and armed with buckets and cloths, the four specialist technicians are descending the London landmark by rope to clean and inspect the four clock faces. The clock faces on the Elizabeth Tower were last cleaned in 2010 and besides getting rid of any dirt that has accumulated since then, the experts are conducting a photographic survey to check the dials for damage. "Big Ben is one of the UK's greatest icons, and cleaning the Great Clock is a vital part of its maintenance," said Steve Jaggs, deputy keeper of the clock. "The process is complex and requires a real head for heights. We have an expert team who will ensure that the clock is thoroughly cleaned and that this piece of our national heritage is safeguarded for future generations." Each clock face is made up of 312 pieces of white opaque glass, held together by a cast iron framework. The clock inside the tower continues to keep time during the cleaning process but the hands on the face being washed are set at 12 to make it easier for the technicians to clamber around. Five days have been set aside for the job - one for each of the four clock faces, with a contingency day in case the weather makes it too risky to work. Big Ben is the name of the huge bell at the top of the 96-metre high tower, but is often used to refer to the tower itself, which looms over the 19th century Gothic Revival parliament. The tower was constructed as part of the reconstruction of the

Houses of Parliament by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin following a major fire in 1843. There are two theories of how the bell came to be known as Big Ben. The most likely explanation is that it was named after Benjamin Hall, the engineer whose name is inscribed on the bell, but some believe it is named after Ben Caunt, a champion heavyweight boxer of the 1850s. The bell, with its distinctive 'bongs', sounds out the hours over central London with different chimes to mark every quarter of the hour.

More than 1,36,000 Indian Haj pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia this year will benefit from several hightech apps, including Google Maps, to facilitate hassle-free pilgrimage. According to the Indian Haj Mission, the idea is to use every available tool and gadget to keep pilgrims in our loop of communication. "We will make use of every form of new-age technology, from Google Maps and smartphone applications, to Facebook, YouTube clips and text messages, to make the journey of our pilgrims as comfortable as possible," Indian Consul General B.S. Mubarak was quoted as saying by Arab News. "One of the major problems that Indian pilgrims encounter during Haj is losing their way and being unable to find their accommodation, especially in the tent city of Mina, which is where most of the rituals are conducted," Mubarak said. An Internet-based, user-friendly smartphone application that is compatible with both Android and Apple operating systems has been launched to address this issue. comprehensive details about their accommodation, including building number, tent number or maktab (office) number, plus an easy-to-follow satellite or a regular road map that will lead you to their location, whether in Makkah, Mina or Madinah," Mubarak said. The consul general said every pilgrim coming from India is provided with a Saudi cellphone SIM card which they activate upon arrival. "We send short text messages to these numbers to keep our pilgrims informed about important and immediate developments," Mubarak said even though not everyone has a smartphone and has the wherewithal to download the application or understand its complexities. Of the 136,020 pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom this year, as many as 1,00,020 are coming through the Haj Committee of India, while the rest are being brought in by private tour operators. The first Indian Haj flight will arrive in Madinah on August 27 from Kolkata, while the first flight in Jeddah will arrive on September 7 from Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

ontroversial Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNS) MLA Ram Kadam has been booked for allegedly threatening to kill a local Shiv Sena leader on Tuesday night in Ghatkopar (W). The complaint against Kadam was filed by a group of

Shiva Sena workers along with the victim Sudhir More (52).According to Senior Police Inspector (PI) Rajaram Vhanmane of Ghatkopar police station, “As per the complaint, Kadam made a couple of phone calls to More on Tuesday threatening to kill him. We are probing the case. MNS MLA Ram Kadam

M

ore than 2,000 school girls of a Kalina-based convent school reported to have faced problems owing to the mushrooming eve-teasers around their school gate. Fed up with the repeated complaints from the girls and their parents, Mary Immacu-

late Girl's High School on Wednesday held a peace march at Vakola traffic and Vakola Police station to protest against the consistent eve-teasing by these local goons. The march began from Kalina at around 10 am and

concluded at the Vakola police station. Talking to the ADC, Dominic D'Sa, chairman of Bombay Catholic Sabha (Kalina) said, “We also have many private vehicles parked alongside the school wall which is very unsafe for girls who board their buses from here.” “These goondas hide behind these vehicles as people also urinate and excrete behind these parked vehicles thus causing nuisance to our school,” D'Sa added. A few days ago, a few girls complained of being molested by these goons. If the illegally parked vehicles are removed from in front of the school gate and police patrolling is intensified, the problem will be solved. Sources from the Vakola police station revealed that their staff is present near every school in the locality and they will soon act upon this complaint.

3 chain-snatching incidents in 3 locations By Abhishek Vissapragada

T

hree separate chain snatching incidents were reported in the city in the last 24 hours under three different jurisdictions – Charkop, Dindoshi and MHB Colony. The first was reported in Kandivili, on Tuesday night, when a 25-year-old homemaker was walking home at around 7.10 pm. Two boys on a Pulsar bike allegedly snatched her mangalsutra and fled while the woman helplessly called for help. Her mangalsutra weighed around 40 grams and is worth Rs 45,000. The second incident occurred at Malad, when a 35year-old homemaker was walking home at around 8.10 pm. Two unknown boys on a motorcycle allegedly hit her hard on the neck from behind, forcefully took her gold chain and fled. The victim tried calling for help but it was too late. Her gold chain weighed about 20 grams and is worth Rs 50,000.

Women are being increasingly targetted by chain-snatchers. In the third incident, a 53year-old NGO worker and her colleague were walking towards Shanti Ashram in Borivili (W) at around 9.15 pm when two boys on a bike pushed them to the ground and snatched their gold chains and fled from the scene. This time thought, the robbery was witnessed by Bhupendra Dhiraj Trivedi (43) who lives in the same locality. The complainants lost their

gold chains weighing 24 grams and 35 grams worth Rs 63,000 and Rs 98,000 respectively. The three police stations Charkop, Dindoshi and MHB Colony police – registered FIRs under section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. The cops are checking CCTV footage installed near where the incidents took place, but are as of now clueless about the identity of the perpetrators.

An FIR against him has been registered under section 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.”More said, “I wish to contest the upcoming election against Kadam. As part of 'Mission 150' started by Udhhavji, I was collecting information from local residents on the work done by Kadam. I am

also investigating where he has used his MLA fund. When he got the whiff of it he got irritated.”Kadam allegedly made a phone call to More on Tuesday, after 9.30 pm, and asked him to stop “interfering” in his work. More told him that he was just exercising his right and cut the call.An irked Kadam called

back and said, “Baghun ghein” (I will see you) and “Pot faadin” (I will tear your stomach apart). When contacted for his version of the event, Kadam refused to take our call and did not reply to our SMS.This is not first time Kadam is the news for his aggressive action against politicians.

IN DEFENCE OF ADARSH written by Public Information Officer, HQ Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa Area addressed to RTI Cell, ADG AE, IHQ of MoD (Army) transferring the queries addressed by Lt Cdr (Retd) Gurmukh Singh Grewal, a member of the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society, in response to an RTI application filed by him. The letter brings out that HQ MG & G Area (and not the entire Army) does not have the information sought by him as some of them may pertain to correspondence with higher HQ which is classified in nature. Hence, the queries have been transferred to RTI Cell, ADG AE, IHQ of MoD (Army), who in turn could address it to offices who may be holding the concerned information. Also, the motive of claiming that the change in Government has finally forced the Army to give the answers is

baseless. In fact, it is not true. It further added, “It is reiterated that the Army is very clear that the said land belongs to the Army and all requisite documents have been submitted to the Bombay High Court in the Title Suit filed for claiming possession of the land. A copy of the same has also been served to Lt Cdr (Retd) Gurmukh Singh Grewal who is well aware of the facts mentioned in the ibid suit. Such statements by the Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society are probably being been made with a view to mislead the public and to meet their own vested interests. The public is advised not to take cognisance of such motivated statements by individuals and organisations. Meanwhile, after Defence PRO's clarification, Adarsh Society also came up with a counter clarification in

which HQ MG & G clearly says: “It is intimated that no information is held on queries 1,3,4 and 11 with this HQ. Queries 1,3,4 and 11 pertaining to the documents whether Army has acquired the land or got it transferred, Govt sanction thereto, payment made thereon to procure the same and possession. The letter further states, “Surprisingly, it is the same HQ MG & G Area, who have filed title suit in the Bombay High Court without these documents pertaining to title. Title documents are not classified documents, but a Public document, and the Army has been avoiding to part with it since the past four years. Ironically, the same HQ MG & G Area, which has filed the title suit in High Court states that information/documents may be held elsewhere. The question is, on what basis they have filed the title suit? philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

ctivists of the Anyay Virodhi Sangharsh Samithi (AVSS) paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Madanlal Dhingra, on the occasion of 'Shaheedi Divas' on Sunday. Born in 1883 in Punjab, Madan Lal Dhingra was a brave revolutionary freedom fighter who while studying in England, assassinated British

official, William Hutt Curzon Wyllie, for the inhuman torture of Indians. At a young age of 26 years, Dhingra was hanged at London’s Pentonville Prison on August 17, 1909. Presiding over the function, AVSS president, Subhash Pandey, said that the motto of organising such functions was to instil the spirit of nationalism into the nerves of today’s young generation.

Ponder awhile... “A military coup needs a sacrifice and courage that you can't find in an army without morale.” — Jalal Talabani

Hectic, critical scenario in Pakistan AST, crucial changing developments are taking place in Pakistan. Cleric F Tahir-ul-Qadri and cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan who are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are now reportedly to be ready to change their stand. The two opposition leaders have taken a long procession to Islamabad, stood in protest at the two gates of Parliament — not allowing members either to leave the House or enter it. The Pakistani army has in the meanwhile assured Nawaz Sharif that it would not stage a coup. It, however, wanted from the ruling party ‘more space’. If Imran Khan and Qadri had expected they would get more help from the army, they soon realised they would not get any. There is little doubt that role the army will be playing will be crucial. There are as many as 40,000 soldiers all ready to go into action. In the resumption of the crisis, the army will play a big part. One had expected in the uneasy, critical situation, they would take advantage and strike. It has become clear that the Pakistan’s army is not interested in imposing its rule on the country. The scenario in Pakistan keeps changing. The latest development is Imran Khan has agreed to have a dialogue with Nawaz Sharif. What is finally likely to happen is both Imran Khan and Qadri will calm down and get ready for some sort of settlement. They have to do this obviously because the army is not supporting them. In fact, there could be cooperative understanding between the army and Nawaz Sharif from now on. And in the meanwhile, while all these hectic developments are taking place, ceasefire violations along the LoC continue to take place.

IKE the proverbial saying 'rising like a phoenix from the ashes' Congress president Sonia Gandhi has vowed that her party will stage a comeback. She is obviously banking upon the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) dismal show to contain rising prices of essential commodities and the failure of its 'achche din' slogan. She had maintained a steely silence since the party's rout with a paltry 44 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections and the aftermath of party veteran Natwar Singh's book 'One Life Is Not Enough' which provided an insider view on the various machinations of Delhi's political circles and his differences with the party honcho. The Congress president has asserted that her party will stage a comeback even as she attacked BJP, saying it had shown 'false dreams' and people got caught in the 'trap.' Lamenting that Congress lost in the Lok Sabha polls despite doing 'so much,' she targeted the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of copying the schemes and programmes of the UPA dispensation and taking credit for the same. Addressing a convention of the 'Mahila Congress' in New Delhi yesterday, Sonia, along with son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, sought to reach out to women by promising a larger electoral role for them at all levels and making a strong pitch for reservation for them in Parliament and state Assemblies, reports PTI.

Modi dispensation On the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, she said that women members of the Congress should become a 'tsunami' and contribute actively in the battle between ideologies. "We had done so much. Still some people laid a trap and others got caught in it. Our work, our achievements got ignored and those showing false dreams marched ahead," she said, targeting the BJP as she looked back at the Lok Sabha polls. To buttress her point about performance of the previous Congress-led government, she listed a number of measures initiated for women empowerment and other reforms. Targeting the Modi dispensation, Sonia said, "those who have come in government today are showing an altogether different picture to the nation in accordance with their habit. They are implementing as their own, schemes and plans which were launched by Congress." At the same time, the Congress chief expressed confidence about staging a comeback. "Maybe the path of our struggle is a bit longer and we may have to work a little more. But if all of us work hard and do it together, the day is not far when Congress will regain its peak." This was the first such party convention since the Lok Sabha polls. Addressing the 'Sankalp Diwas' convention, Sonia said her party will put 'full pressure' on the NDA government to pass the Women Reservation Bill as despite being in Opposition her party cannot withdraw from its commitment on the issue. Rahul asked women to join the party in large numbers to strengthen it in the 'battle

of ideologies' after the formation of NDA government at Centre. While Sonia talked about the measures initiated for empowering women by Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul promised a 'tsunami' of measures to empower women within the organization as it urged them to join the party in large numbers in the 'ideological battle' ahead. "The way the tsunami had come, a tsunami of Mahila Congress is also to come in. Fill the Congress with the strength of women and I will field you from wherever you can fight – be it panchayat, assembly or Parliamentary elections," the Congress vice-president said. Seeking to draw a contrast between the ideologies of Congress and BJP in respect to women's empowerment, Rahul said, "A government has been formed here. This is a battle of ideologies. This is a battle of the thought process.” "In their (BJP) thinking, the women should be worshipped. Goddesses should be worshipped but women should not be empowered. In their view, women should not come

IN PERSPECTIVE out of their homes. "Our thinking is that they should come out of their homes, run businesses. We want their empowerment...You have to fight not only a battle of power but a battle of ideologies." He said women are suppressed everywhere - at home, at the work place and outside - and this situation can be addressed only by change of the thought process and not merely by laws and the police. He narrated an incident of Uttar Pradesh where he had seen in the night a man dragging his wife and beating her up for not cooking meals properly. "The same person calls a woman mother and sister and worships her in the form of a Goddess and then beats his wife. You have to change this," he said. Referring to rape incidents, he said, "prominent people say 'shame shame' but "Law and police cannot check it. Only women can do it. Do not leave it to the men (to address this problem)." Sonia, who spoke earlier, said that women empowerment was one of the two priorities of late Rajiv Gandhi, the other being taking the country into the 21st century. She said Rajiv used to say that no country can move forward by ignoring half of its population, she said.

Women empowerment Listing a number of steps taken by Rajiv Gandhi for women empowerment, including reservation for them in panchayats and setting up of a national commission for women, the Congress chief said that the late Prime Minister also wanted that women should get representation in Parliament and Assemblies. Noting that UPA government took up the issue when it came to power in 2004 and ensured passage of the measure in Rajya Sabha, he said, "Today, we are in opposition but Con-

gress will not withdraw from its commitment to women's reservation and we will build full pressure on the NDA government to pass the bill as soon as possible." The 18-year journey of the Women's Reservation Bill has been marked by high drama and roadblocks in each outing in Parliament before the historic measure cleared the first legislative hurdle in March 2010 when Rajya Sabha passed it during a sitting which saw marshals being used. The bill seeks to reserve 33 per cent of the seats in Parliament and legislative Assemblies for women. Observing that victory and defeat were part of life, she said, "the real thing is that one should stick to principles and Congress has never sacrificed its principles for power... We do not have to leave any stone unturned in bringing back the glory (aan, baan aur shaan) of the Congress." She asked women Congress workers to raise the issues of women's exploitation in a big way and help the victims in getting justice from police stations and courts. Regretting that incidents of female foeticide, domestic violence and rape "make our head hang in shame," she said, "we have to raise our voice against such crimes.”

US wants resumption of Indo-Pak talks

T

HE US is engaging with the Indian and Pakistani governments on bilateral talks, which India called off while objecting to the Pakistani envoy's meeting with Kashmiri separatist leaders ahead of the dialogue. "We are engaging with the governments of both India and Pakistan directly through our embassies to talk about this issue, and again, would strongly support efforts by both countries to improve their bilateral relations," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf told PTI. "So it's really up to them to take steps to improve that relationship," Harf added. Meanwhile a defiant Pakistan made it clear that it will continue talking to Kashmiri separatists despite India's protestation, saying that the 'bottomline' for Indo-Pak talks on Kashmir issue was to engage all stakeholders and dialogue was not a favour by Pakistan to India or vice versa. At the same time, Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit said his country "attaches enormous importance" to its ties with India and that there was no need to be 'pessimistic' about cancellation of the Foreign Secretary-level talks. "We need to engage with all stakeholders. It is not a question of either, or as far as we are concerned. We are engaging with India to find peaceful ways," Basit said during an interaction with foreign journalists here while reacting to India's stand that Pakistan should either choose dialogue with separatists or the Indian government. Justifying his meeting with Kashmiri separatists, which was objected to by India, Basit said, "We strongly believe that our interaction is helpful to the process itself. It is helpful to find peaceful solution to the problem. It is important to engage with all stakeholders. So that is the bottomline for us."

THIS refers to your edit-piece 'Who scuttled the peace talks?' and Arati Jerath's column on the same page 'Modi too has fallen into Pak's flip-flop policy trap' (ADC, August 20). Calling off the proposed secretary-level talks because the Pakistan high commissioner had invited the separatists from J&K for talks was indeed a 'kneejerk' reaction as Anand Sharma had put it – such rendezvous have been taking place with officials visiting India from Pakistan for ages. It would have been more logical if the government had warned Pakistan that there would be no talks if the ceasefire violations on the LoC continued. The unfortunate fact is the new government is yet to frame a sound foreign policy and the minister for external affairs has all along been a champion of domestic affairs in the Parliament. TRA report ranks Mumbai University at 343 among other institutes in the country By Yatin Ingle

W

hile the Mumbai University (MU) is still struggling with the goof-ups and issues regarding academics and examinations, a report has now also stated that the University is way behind as far as trustworthiness is concerned. In order to give students knowledge and information about MU, the Trust Research Advisory (TRA) conducted a research of educational institutes across India to list the top trusted educational institutes of the country. Shockingly, the colleges of the University were able to book their place in the top 25 positions but the MU has been give the 343rd rank by the TRA report. The TRA's proprietary 61-attribute Trust Matrix, India's Most Trusted Educational Institutes 2014-15 is India's comprehensive study which was conducted with 7,710 respondents across 40 Indian cities. For the research, each of the respondents, which comprised of students, parents and faculty, were queried on over 700 questions regard-

ing the educational institutes in the country. The study brought out 7 million data points on various aspects of the institutes over 20,000 hours of field work. Topping the list of the most trusted educational institutes is the Hindu College, Delhi followed by IIT – Delhi at the second position and Loyola College, Chennai ranked at the third position. Being the lone University as a whole, the Anna University, Chennai was ranked at number four. The Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics (Post Graduation) bagged the 12th rank which is

the highest for an educational institute in Mumbai. It has been followed by Mitthibhai College (Vile Parle) placed at the 22nd rank. The SNDT Women's University was listed at the 86th spot. The TRA had listed 88 trustworthy educational institutes of Mumbai comprising of schools, colleges, education training centers, distance learning, pre-school, high school and smart classes in its report. Last year, MU had managed to gain entry into the list of top 150 universities in Asia at a rank of 131, According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, the varsity went up nine spots from 140 in the previous year. The ADC contacted N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA who said: “Education is a fundamental component of the society and quite naturally the quality of educational institute determines the quality of students it creates. Unfortunately, however, there is no research that provides universal metric for comparing different institutes – schools, colleges, universities, coaching classes among others. It is this acute awareness that led us to map the entire education sector topography, hoping to give the students and their parents an universal basis of information for the to choose from the institutes.”

Taximen protest against recalibration workshops By Aroosa Ahmed

ore than 200 taxi drivers protested outside the Khadeeja Workshop in Khar and Naaz Metre Workshop in Kurla-Kamani yesterday, against the increased cost of recalibrating and reinstalling the metres. The cost of installation of a metre is Rs 500, but the workshops were charging the taxi drivers Rs 700 – Rs 900 for the installation. The Mumbai Taximen's Union had earlier submitted a written complaint

to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) about the increase in the price of installation after the Bombay High Court (HC) order of increased fares

was issued. Speaking to the ADC, AL Quadros, Leader, Mumbai Taximen's Union, said, “The workshops have been charging anywhere between Rs 500 to Rs 900 and were making out receipts of Rs 500. Therefore we held this demonstration outside the workshops. So now the workshops have given it to us in writing that they will charge only Rs 500 and will return the extra money back to the taxi drivers. We can now freely install the re-calibrated metres.”

ausing much embarrassment to the newly formed Palghar district police, a gang of unidentified robbers broke into a jewellery shop in Nallasopara and decamped with a booty of Rs 18 lakh including gold and silver ornaments on Tuesday night. According to the police, the break-in was reported from Chandni Jewellers, in the Achole Road area of Nallasopara (E). Unidentified robbers gained access by cutting open the rear door and iron grills of the shop by using a gas cutter machine and fled with Rs 5,000 cash, gold and silver ornaments worth more Rs 18 lakh. The break-in was discovered at about 6 am by a nearby tea vendor who informed the jewellery shop owner, Mukesh Nanalal Jain, about the incident. The miscreants who also made an unsuccessful attempt to cut-open the safety locker, fled after leaving behind the two gas cylinders and sophisticated cutter machines. remove Dirt From sueDe shoes using stale BreaD If you love wearing suede shoes, chances are that they get scuffed with mud stains all too easily. Given the poor condition of our roads and public transport, all it takes is a day for suede shoes to get grimy. While suede erasers (that are used by most cobblers to remove these stains) aren’t easily available, stale bread does the job equally well. Use a thick slice of hard, stale bread and slowly rub it on the grimy spots. You will notice that the stains are disappearing slowly, and you will have clean, new shoes in just a few minutes.

Ballerina flats are super cute and can make a simple jeans and T-shirt outfit chic. However, anyone who has ever owned these shoes will tell you how painful it is to break into a new pair of ballerina shoes. As comfortable as they look, they are bound to cut into the skin on the back of your heels, and chaff your toes on their first few outings. A simple way to get rid of this painful problem, is by wearing the thickest pair of socks that you own, and plugging in your blow-dryer. Wear the socks and then slip your feet into the shoes. Using your blow dryer at its highest setting, direct the air flow towards the areas that feel really tight and those that usually give you the most trouble. Do this for two minutes on each shoe and then walk around the house in the shoes until they cool down. The heat will help expand the shoes in the areas that they are the tightest. You can also fill resealable bags with water and put one in each shoe. Put the pair in the freezer overnight. The water will expand as it freezes and so will your shoes.

Dry hanD washeD clothes in a salaD spinner This trick is extremely handy for clothes that come bearing a ‘hand wash only’ tag. The tag accompanies garments that will lose their shape if they are washed in a washing machine. So, using a dryer or the dryer setting in your washing machine, after hand washing the garment is out of the question. Use a salad spinner instead. It is gentler and while it may not wring out water from your clothes as well as your dryer will, it will get the job done effectively, without your garments losing their shape.

use a pumice stone For pilling

Flip-Flop makeovers

If you’re already confused, let’s explain this. Pilling is the formation of small ball of fibres on woollen fabric. So, no matter how well you take care of your sweaters and woollen clothes, you often can’t stop them from pilling. While you can buy a fabric shaver, the tool is expensive and not worth it when there’s such an easy, inexpensive fix! All you need to do is take a pumice stone and rub it on the outside of your woollen clothes. In a few minutes, they will be as good as new.

Flip flops are essential while you laze at the beach, but they can also be styled to look cute for every occasion. All you need is some fabric and beads to give your trusty slippers a makeover. Start by wrapping a plain or printed cloth around each strap in order to cover it completely. Then, wrap the fabric between the two straps, until you have made a web of fabric that is an inch or two long. Next, use fabric glue to stick some beads and jewels onto the webbed area. Let the flip-flops dry overnight, and you will have cute, inexpensive slip-ons that will jazz up any outfit. For a variation, once you wrap the fabric around the two straps, tie a knot at the end and leave 8-10 inches of the fabric loose, instead of trimming it. This way, you can make your own tieup sandals!

is yoUR bRa the Right size?

wait five minUtes afteR iRoning yoUR clothes

A simple way to find out whether you are wearing a well-fitted bra, is to insert two fingers between the band and your back. If the bra still feels comfortable, it is the correct size. But, if it feels too tight or too loose, you need to try a different size or tighten or loosen the band.

If you are the type of person who irons her clothes in the morning, just as she is about to rush to work, this tip is for you. Always let your clothes rest for five minutes after you have ironed them because this lets them set properly. If you wear them immediately, you will be adding more creases to the outfit while it is warm and as the garment cools down, these creases will set, defeating the entire purpose of ironing your clothes!

Use lace to hide seams on alteRed denims Most women find it extremely difficult to find jeans that fit them perfectly. Usually, it is because they are too long. If you don’t want to fold your jeans every time your wear them, your only option is to have them altered. But, if you despise the noticeable seam that is left behind once your tailor alters your denims, here is a nifty trick to save them. Use a strip of lace — a fabric that is a big fashion trend right now — and stitch it onto the hem of your denim, so that it covers the existing seam. You can also use polka-dotted fabric or crocheted fabric. Not only is the result extremely pretty, the unsightly seams will be hidden effectively as well. This also works well if you are altering your jeans at home and don’t want to roll them up and hem them again.

Tired of your new T-shirts feeling stiff until they grow old — after which they’re too faded to wear outside anyway? If you want to strike a good balance between an old T-shirt that feels like second skin and a T-shirt that looks new enough to wear outside, you should turn to salt. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? The truth is, salt water can soften fabric till it feels as comfortable as a vintage tee. Fill a bucket with two parts water and one part salt. You will have to soak the T-shirt in water for at least three days. Wash it thoroughly before wearing it again to avoid the salt residue from irritating your skin and making you feel itchy.

get Rid of smells with some vodka

Remove Red wine stains with white wine

Tired of coming home after a barbecue and having your clothes smell of food for days? Even if you live in a small house, smells from your kitchen can seep into your clothes — which is not something you want to deal with on a regular basis. But, don’t worry! Before you send your clothes for dry cleaning or throw them in the wash, use a mixture of water and vodka and spray it on your clothes. The diluted vodka seeps into the fabric and soaks up foul odours.

We’ve all lost at least one outfit to red wine. The stains are notorious for being impossible to remove and put most stain removers to shame. However, the next time you spill red wine on yourself or a carpet, white wine can come to your rescue. Simply pour a small amount of white wine on the stain and, using a clean cloth, blot the area (never rub as you will push the stains further into the fabric) gently. It will counteract the effects of red wine and fade the stain considerably, making it easy to wash off later, using regular stain remover.

iRoning with a dRyeR Need to get to a meeting in a hurry, but your iron has conked off? If you don’t own an iron, then instead of following this tip, please head out to buy one. However, if yours is in need of dire repair, don’t risk burning your clothes. There’s a simple fix that works like a charm — and all you need is a hair dryer, or your shower! If you want to use your shower, hang your clothes up from the shower curtain rod. Seal the bathroom as well as you can and then turn the hot water on. Make sure that the shower/ tap head is not anywhere near your clothes so that they don’t get wet. The steam will help get rid of wrinkles. If all this is too much, simply blow dry your clothes till the wrinkles disappear.

Use cUtleRy tRays foR jewelleRy Cutlery trays are often pretty useless if you’ve got a set of more than 6 knives, forks and spoons. Instead of trying to stuff them into your kitchen drawers, move them to your bedroom. You can put them in your cupboard to neatly store your jewellery. You can also mount them on the back of your cupboard door, add hooks and hang your necklaces off them in a neat, fun way.

paint cheap jewelleRy Cheap jewellery can stain your skin a blueishgreen colour. However, we know that wearing costume jewellery is sometimes fun, and so, we’ve got a fix for you. Simply buy a few extra bottles of clear nail paint. Use this to paint the insides of your costume jewellery. This will prevent it from getting discoloured or the green stains from rubbing off on your skin.

Do you always end up with a perfectly ironed shirt, but manage to leave a few creases on your collar? If you can’t manoeuvre your shirt correctly in order to get a sharply ironed collar, this trick is a godsend. All you need to do is set your flat-iron on the highest setting, and use it to iron your collar, just as you would straighten a section of hair. It will save a lot of time and leave you with a well-ironed shirt.

Remove deodoRant stains with wipes

Baking soda absorbs smells of any kind and is of great help when it comes to shoe odours. Store your shoes with little cloth bags filled with baking soda. This will help keep them odour-free.

While baby oil takes care of oil spots, baby wipes will help remove deodorant stains. Gently rub a wipe in a circular motion over the stain. Don’t do it for too long or too vigorously, or you will end up with more marks than you started with.

Baby powder is an effective way of removing oil stains from your clothes without running the risk of ruining them. All you need to do is dab the stain with baby powder, using a paper towel. Leave it on for around 10 minutes and then rub it off with your fingers.

Beeswax is not commonly available, but if you do manage to procure a stick, keep it in your drawer to use during monsoon. It works brilliantly to rainproof shoes, especially canvas ones. All you have to do is cover the shoes with the wax and then use a hair dryer so it melts, loses its colour and seeps in, without leaving your shoes stained or waxy.

If you realise that your stockings are laddering, just as you are about to leave your house, or if you can’t find another pair to change into, simply spray the laddered area with hairspray or apply clear nail varnish on the region. Both these products will help ho ld the threads in place until you can change into another pair. Fashion provides a person with a lot of avenues to showcase their creativity. Why did you choose shoes? I think the delay was due to postproduction issues. As an actor, I just do my job and leave. I never ask what, who and why. But, of course, I am really excited that the film is finally releasing. I had so much fun shooting all over India for the film.

our hair speaks volumes about your personality. So, having healthy hair is extremely important, whether you are heading to a party or going to work. Sunidhi has kept it simple in this pretty pink dress and we love the gold belt that accompanies it — but we’re not fans of the updo. It seems a little too high and a little too much for her outfit.

Kangana’s hair and makeup is terrible, but we love her outfit. The tan skirt and white top are a great combination and we’d love to know where she got that gorgeous belt! Her handbag is boring, but a good match.

sleeP in a Bun Twist your hair into a bun before you go to sleep. Just separate damp, towel-dried hair into large or small sections, and then twist it, securing each section with bobby pins. Do not secure them with elastics as that will cause dents in your hair.

oPT for layers If you are wondering what haircut will make thin hair appear thicker, then opt for layers. Adding layers to long or short hair adds volume without the hassle of daily maintenance. Also, keep your hair as short as possible, as shorter hair will put less strain on your roots and you’ll get maximum volume. This is the most convenient trick of all! You need to switch the side of your hair parting for an instant lift. To ensure a deep parting, take a comb and draw a line starting from the edge of your eyebrow, moving diagonally back towards the centre of the crown. This will give your hair instant volume.

Frequently cut your hair in order to avoid split ends. However, don’t cut your hair every two weeks! Cut about ½ an inch every few months to keep your hair healthy and thick.

Using too much shampoo can cause severe damage to your hair, but conditioning it every time you shampoo it will help keep your hair healthy. Also, don’t compromise on the quality of your conditioner, always opt for reputed brands and good quality conditioners, even thought they might sometimes be expensive.

« Dear grace, i have a problem...

Dear grace,

My boyfriend is quite insecure and for some reason, he thinks I’ve been cheating on him. He claims that a friend saw me having what looked like a date and now, everyone I talk to, he thinks I am flirting with. He’s ruining my friendships by fighting with me whenever we’re in public, or analysing my behaviour afterwards. I’ve tried explaining that I’m being faithful, but he says he can’t trust me anymore. He doesn’t want to end the relationship; he just keeps saying that I need to change —

except I don’t know what he wants me to act like! Is there any way I can convince him to let me be myself and trust me? I really like him. — Chaaya Singhania, matunga Dear Chaaya, We suggest you give him one last chance to trust you and if he still doesn’t, dump him. Tell him in a matter-of-fact tone that you need to talk to him for a few minutes. He is crude, loud, brash and rude! He always butts in; invites himself over and stays on for dinner, uninvited! He monopolizes the conversation and Jason... The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, Hahahaha! I LOVE thisdressed guy! up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!

hurt your self-esteem. Once you’ve told him your side of the story, explain that he has just two options — to trust his friend and end this relationship, or to trust you. From what you’ve told us, it seems that you’ve given him enough time, so we suggest you make this an ultimatum; if he doesn’t choose either option, we recommend you end the relationship — a relationship without trust and full of insecurities is not worth it! "I don’t like this guy! I want him at a distance, if not out of my life entirely. He is obnoxious! But, every time I bring it up with Jason, he laughs it off. Help!” - F a) You life is now a life shared. He is obviously a big part of your husband’s life. Don’t make him choose, as he will resent you. Just avoid him when you can. b) Why not try to get to know the friend your husband obviously loves and cares about? A lot of loud, brash people aren’t like that around people that they are close to as they feel relaxed. c) Are you a little jealous? hares of Dena Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce plunged up to 5 % yesterday amid concerns related to a suspected scam. Dena Bank' scrip tumbled 5.06 % to Rs 60.10, while shares of Oriental Bank of Commerce fell by 3.63 % to Rs 264 on the BSE. The government has initiated a forensic audit at the state-run Oriental Bank of Commerce and Dena Bank after the unearthing of a sus-

pected scam, wherein the lenders allegedly misappropriated funds worth Rs 436 crore from their fixed deposit customers. The lenders are alleged to have indulged in siphoning-off the money (Rs 180 crore by OBC and Rs 256 crore by Dena Bank) received as fixed deposits. Meanwhile, in a clarification to the BSE Dena Bank said that the Malabar Hill Branch of the bank received bulk term deposits from various entities/government organisations between January 30,

2014 and May 5, 2014. Subsequently, term deposits amounting to Rs 256.69 crore were pledged to the bank by the same signatories to obtain overdraft facilities of Rs 223.25 crore (present outstanding 217.17 crore). State FMs Want Lower Threshold Of Rs 10 Lakh For Levying GST By A Business Reporter

S

tate Finance Ministers yesterday resolved to lower the threshold limit for imposing Goods and Service Tax (GST) from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, and asked the Centre to include the provision for GST compensation in the Constitutional Amendment Bill. The Empowered Committee of state Finance Ministers on GST which met yesterday in New Delhi, also recommended to the Centre that states be given the legal powers to collect tax from businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs 1.5 cr. "About dual control, Empowered Committee decided to recommend to the central government that for threshold of Rs 1.5 crore, Centre will not interfere in assessment, in audit, in other matters. It will be left exclu-

sively to states. But officials from Centre insisted that only administrative control will be given to the states. The states insisted that legal powers should also be given to the states to the extent of Rs 1.5 crore so far as CGST is concerned," Empowered Committee Chairman Abdul Rahim Rather told reporters. The contentious issue of dual control of traders - by both the Union government and state governments - in GST structure, would be that taxpayers with annual turnover of over Rs 1.5 crore would be taxed by the Centre, which will later disburse to states their share. Those with turnover below Rs 1.5 crore would pay their taxes to states, which would subsequently pass on to the Centre its share, reports PTI. "So far as threshold limit is con-

cerned, it was decided that it should be Rs 10 lakh in respect of general category of states and Rs 5 lakh for special category and NE states," Rather said. As regards the items exempted from the purview of GST, the Committee suggested that they should be mentioned in the Constitutional Amendment Bill. States have already told the Centre that items like petroleum and tobacco would be kept out of GST. On compensation for phasing out of Central Sales tax (CST), Rather said that Rs 13,000 crore has been pending as on March 2010. Gujarat Finance Minister Saurabhbhai Patel urged the Empowered Committee to take a balanced view in the proposed dual control by both state and Central authorities, along with sustainability of states

Pace Of Broadband Roll-Out Is Disappointing, Says TRAI Chief By A Business Reporter

T

elecom regulator TRAI will invite views of public on issues related to roll out of broadband in the country by end of next month. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is also planning to issue a consultation paper to discuss regulatory framework around Over-the-top (OTT) players like WhatsApp, Skype, Viber, WeChat etc. The OTT players facilitate free calls and messaging services, making it af-

fordable for consumers to use them. Telecom subscribers are required to pay only internet charges to their operators for using OTT services. "Hopefully we will come out with paper on broadband may be by end of next month," TRAI Chairman Rahul Khullar said at a telecom summit organised by industry chamber ASSOCHAM in New Delhi. Khullar clarified that the paper will be around issues related to rollout of broadband services in the country. TRAI Chairman said the

pace of broadband roll-out in the country is disappointing. In this regard, he referred to the roll out under national optical fibre network which aims to connect 2.5 lakh village panchayat by 2017. "Our progress has been very disappointing. Of 1.8 kilometers cable that has been ordered, 15,000 km has been delivered which is less than 10%. Of the 6 lakh km for ducting, actual achievement is 2000 km which is about 0.3%...There are lessons to be learnt from this," Khullar said.

revenues and ease in compliance for small traders while rolling out the GST. Yesterday was the first meeting of the Empowered Committee of state FMs after the presentation of Budget by the new NDA government. The GST rollout has missed several deadlines because of lack of consensus among states over certain crucial issues on the new tax regime. It will subsume indirect taxes like excise duty and service tax at the central level and VAT on the states front, besides local levies. Earlier this month Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had

written to the Centre that the present GST Bill is unacceptable to the states and also raised concerns on Rather said certain aspect. Tamil Nadu's concerns are likely to be ironed out with effective compensation mechanism. The GST Constitutional Amendment Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2011, has lapsed and the NDA government will be required to come up with a fresh bill. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that the government will try to bring in the new GST Bill in the Winter session of Parliament.

Tulip Joshi is flying high

25

From Saas-Bahu drama to the shows that deal with epic historical tales, small screen has certainly come a long way. From hiring various professionals from Hollywood/Bollywood, TV producers have left no stone unturned in the making of a movie. Of course, as the scope of the show increases, so does its budget. One of the most awaited shows of 2014 – Star Plus’ 'Airlines – har udaan ek toofan,' is all set to roll the curtains up soon. We had a hearty chat with the lead protagonist of the show, Tulip Joshi, playing a pilot By Sandeep Hattangadi

What is so special about the show? 'Airlines' will be recognised for its outstanding sets designed by veteran art director Narendra Rahurikar who has blockbusters like 'Singham' and 'Chennai Express' in his kitty. The show has been shot at an unconventional location i.e. the Haj Terminal in Delhi and this is the first show ever to get permission to shoot at T3 terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport. Production House Miditech India is sure that the show will instantly capture the hearts of Indian audiences everywhere due to its distinction and accuracy to detail. Making the show no less than a masterpiece, the makers have heavily invested in technology, for example Bollywood’s favorite ‘Pixion’ has been taken on board to do the visual effects and computer graphics. The show will have extensive use of visual effects and 3-D conversion; 'Airlines' is all set to write a new chapter in today’s time and will be recognised for the technological breakthrough made on Indian television.

What is your character in the show? I play the pilot of an Indian airlines who has to make it an essentially man’s world and her relationship with her colleagues and family. She also has a love interest in the form of a pilot played by former VJ Yudishter Urs. It also depicts the day to day working of an airline and the intricacies of the airline world.

Has it been shot on a real airline airport or its tarmac? Touted to be one of the most expensive projects on Indian TV so far, 'Airlines' will feature expensive VFX, larger-than-life sets and elaborate costumes from aviation background. The high production costs are also due to the extensive outdoor shoots that the makers have done. There are around 200 people in the production and creative teams besides another 50 in the graphics team of this show. The aircraft, designed by Narendra Rahurikar, took over three months to be conceptualised, finalised and construct. The first design decision was to make a Boeing 737 aircraft and the challenge was to make the cockpit and passengers’ panel look real – every switch, button, etc needed to be accurate. To make the aircraft shoot-friendly the side panels of the aircraft can be wheeled away and to get that perfect top angle shot of the passenger cabin the ceiling is made removable. This replica of Boeing 737 needs to be seen to be believed! It has been made at a cost of Rs 85 lakh. What kind of TV shows do you like to watch? Generally US shows like ‘Game of Thrones’ and sports based shows and matches.

Joshi beats Shandilya to star in Race for Gold victory M

UMBAI: Devendra Joshi overcame Ashok Shandilya in a pulsating decider to lead Race for Gold to a thrilling 3-2 win over SPG Billiards Punters in the inauguralVideocon Billiards Premier League here today. After Cyrus Mistry forced the decider for Punters, who trailed 0-2, with an impressive win over Ronnie Daruwala in the crucial fourth tie, Joshi beat Shandilya at the death in a clash between members of the victorious India ‘B’ team at the world team championship in Glasgow recently. Race for Gold’s closely fought win set the trend for more tight encounters as Maharashtra junior champion Jaiveer Dhingra hit 95 in the decider in WJ Genii’s win over The Rakish Kings and MB’s Shooters beat RRockets. World team championship silver medallist Dhruv Sitwala hit 114 for Shooters and Australian Open bronze medallist Siddharth Parikh hit 91.

Maharashtra senior champion Arun Agrawal fired 159 for the tournament’s highest break in his team SP Young Guns’ 2-3 loss to Race for Gold earlier. ISTANBUL: Istanbul is inhospitable in footballing terms, and it has been so for English teams for a long time. Although Arsenal disproved that notion at this stage last year, their second journey to Turkey in as many years proved much less successful, as the Gunners struggled to find their best form in a 00 draw with Besiktas on Tuesday. Despite keeping a clean sheet in an Ataturk Olympic Stadium that in truth resembled more of a tribal coliseum than a football arena, given the enormous vocal presence by the fans of Slaven Bilic‘s Black Eagles, Arsenal fans have little to smile about and head back to London knowing that opportunities could have been capitalised upon and that a great deal of hard graft remains if Arsenal are to make the group stages of the Champions League for a 17th consecutive season.

defending his US Open title, watched the match from the VIP stand. “Kroos is an important player and a great signing for Real Madrid,” Nadal said at halftime. The second leg is to be played Friday at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon Stadium. Despite having scored an away goal, Atletico coach Diego Simeone said his team’s chances of winning the cup were still only 50 percent. “We are going to find ourselves up against a team with many attacking options and very good players,” he said of the second leg.

LONDON: Having received his maiden call-up in the England ODI squad, hardhitting batsman Alex Hales feels that the IPL snub he got during last edition, helped him turn into a better player. In 2013, Nottinghamshire refused to release him for the IPL and during the last edition, dashing batsman was not picked up by any of the franchises.”Had I got picked up in the IPL who knows whether we would have been having this conversation now,” Hales told the Daily Telegraph in an interview.”I am almost glad that the door shut on me in the IPL and it has given me the chance to work hard on my four-day game. Brearley, writing in his column for ‘The Times’, said India have been a disappointment in the Test series even though their bowling has throughout been energetic and often skillful. “In three of the past four Tests, including the one at Lord’s won by India, the pitches have been designed to suit England, and to test

India’s batsmen, but much of the rest of their play, including slip fielding, has been, for the last three matches, poor,” the former England skipper

India suffer 0-2 defeat against Pakistan in football friendly

B

ANGALORE: India today suffered an embarrassing 0-2 defeat at the hands of a spirited Pakistan in the second football friendly to end the two-match series 1-1 here today. Wim Koeverman’s team, which won the first friendly 1-0 on August 17, today looked out of sorts and Pakistan were the better side in

all departments of the game between the Asian Gamesbound sides of the two countries at the Bangalore Football Stadium. Pakistan richly deserved the accolades for putting up a gritty show and for not allowing the home side to make comeback into the game. India will need to step up the gas if they hope to go past

the group stage in the Asian Games. Captain Kaleemullah and Saddam Hussain found the back of the Indian net in the 39th and 90th minutes respectively much to the delight of their coach Mohammad Shamlan who had said before of the match that India were beatable. Kaleemullah converted a free-kick in the 39th minute, while Saddam Hussain doubled the lead in the 90th minute for the visitors. Kaleemullah’s free-kick sailed into the back of the net after a Lalrindika Ralte foul, giving Pakistan a 1-0 lead. Then, in dying moments of the game, Saddam placed the ball into the far post and sealed the match for Pakistan. In the first 14 minutes, both teams had a chance each. Indian captain Sunil Chhetri tested Pakistan custodian Muzammil Hussain, while Kaleemullah’s shot went over the bar.

‘Insulted’ Manoj to file case against Sports Ministry By Philem Dipak Singh

ATIALA: Feeling “insulted” after his name was not added to this year’s list of Arjuna awardees, boxer Manoj Kumar today said he would sue the Sports Ministry for the “injustice” meted out to him. The controversial recommendation of boxer Jai Bhagwan for the prestigious Arjuna Awards stands after the selection committee yesterday decided not to make any changes in the original 15-athlete list.

Sports Authority of India Director General Jiji Thomson, who was part of the Awards committee, said the panel discussed seven athletes in the review meeting

but it was unanimously agreed that no changes were needed. Manoj said that he had been assured by the sports secretary and Thomson himself that his name would be added in yesterday’s meeting and their backtracking was a “betrayal”. “When my elder brother met the Sports Secretary on August 13, the Sports Secretary had admitted that there was a mistake on the part of the ministry by mistakenly thinking that I was involved in a dope offence.”

said. “Mahendra Singh Dhoni has batted with skill and courage, standing out above the rest. He seems able in his

batting and in his captaincy to put much of the past behind him, and to avoid touchy or petulant reactions,” Brearley said. “But his wicketkeeping is not up to Test standard. Nor, I think is his captaincy,” he said. Brearley also slammed India’s selection vagaries, saying the team has not seemed able to make sane and consistent judgments about the value of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Stuart Binny. “Binny played in three Tests, was clearly not rated by his captain as a bowler and cut a sad and solitary figure on the field,” he said.

Terming Jadeja as a “poor man’s Monty Panesar”, Brearley said Ashwin was a better bowler and not only brought some skill as an attacking spinner but is also one of India’s more effective batsmen. The Indian batting was a also a big let down with the top-order faltering consistently on grassy English pitches. Brearley though was more sympathetic than critical for the Indian batsmen. “And what of India’s highcalibre batting? I have a lot of sympathy for them. They have come up against top-quality seam and swing bowling on the grassiest set of pitches I can remember,” he said.
