THANKS TO POLICE NEGLIGENCE, HAS CASE AGAINST SALMAN KHAN FINALLY WEAKENED?
By Santia Dudi

fter the last hearing when the police informed the court that a large number of witness statements had gone missing in the hit-and-run case against Salman Khan, the police told the court on Thursday that the case diary has gone missing. Fifty six out of the 63 original statements of the witnesses are reportedly missing. In the last hearing, the court had ordered the police to locate all the documents by September 12 and to present their plan of action in the next hearing. The Investigating Officer (IO), Kishan Shengal, has also been ordered to appear in the court on September 12. According to the police the original documents were kept at the magistrate's court where the trial was going on earlier. But after December 5, 2013, when the case was transferred to the Sessions Court, the documents have been missing. Almost a decade ago on September 28, 2002, Salman Khan allegedly ran his car over

round 20 to 25 persons were detained by the Mumbai Police on Thursday night after a riot-like situation erupted at Nagpada. According to the police, the fight started at Lime N Spice Restaurant at Nagpada junction after the employees of the restaurant allegedly beat up some women in the building. Reacting to this, the family members of the women hurled abuses and started pelting stones and soda bottles on the restaurant. The entire incident took an uglier turn when a motorbike was torched. The situation remained tensed here. The police had to call in seven platoons to secure the peace and roads remained blocked. The Rapid Action Force was called and even water cannons were kept on stand by to quell the violence. The police told the ADC
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told ADC, “If the primary evidences are missing in a case the prosecution can rely on the secondary evidences. It will be premature to say that whether Salman Khan will be acquitted. But the prosecution can use other evidences like details mentioned in the station diary.” Criminal Lawyer Prakash Wagh said, “The case diary is missing in this case. It clearly indicates the irresponsible job done by the police. There are chances that Salman Khan may get aquittal due to the lack of material evidences. And if this happens it will be a huge injustice to the victims. The question is why did it happen in this case. It's not a regular scenario.
people sleeping on a pavement near American Bakery in Bandra. This accident killed one person and injured four. Earlier one of witnesses had informed the court that he saw Salman Khan coming out of the car from the driver's seat. The actor has been charged under culpable homicide, not amounting to murder which attracts 10 years imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Additional Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash said that the clashes between the restaurant management and the residents have been going on for a long time, but today matters reached a flashpoint. ondrous weaves and trendy textiles took centre-stage on day two of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014 at Palladium Hotel on Thursday. It was the Indian Handloom and Textile Day with Debashri Samanta starting it all with her Vietnaminspired collection called ‘Hooked.’ Everyone was hooked to it with traditional Jamdani fish motifs on the clothes and some models even carrying fishing rods, a nice touch indeed. Divya Sheth was inspired by tea tables with Ajrakh prints in her ‘Ajrakh Jo Galicho’ (Carpet of Ajrakh) collection. The Kokeshi dolls of northern Japan were the moving force at Sayantan Sarkar’s ‘Live and Let Live’ line for men and women. It was a revival of the popular doll motifs with Shibori dyeing. Sashikant Naidu brought the limelight onto 21st century women with his collection ‘Separe’ (French for ‘separates’). Purvi Joshi brought in harmony between two cultures for her collection ‘Chavi’ inspired by the African Aztec prints as she converted these prints into a ‘desi’ offering of glam fusion wear. And the showstopper was Sonal Chauhan in a sleeveless off-white blouse with a flared skirt embodying plenty of mirror work. Anavila Sindhu Mishra’s collection ‘Mohenjo Daro’ painted a vivid visual picture for the collection. And her muse was Konkona Sen Sharma who ended the show in a metallic sari with two-shaded yellow/gold and rust/gold blocking teamed with a gold metallic blouse. And the trendy textile time continued with shows by Pratima Pandey, Shruti Sancheti, Soumitra, Vaishali S, Krishna Mehta and Sanjay Garg. All this was in the main show area. The Jabong stage also brought alive the textile tale with shows by Sreejith Jeevan, Sidharth Sinha, Anju Sharma, Swati Vijaivargie and Harshitaa Chatterjee Deshpande.0

Bandra Fair: Cement Road to be opened for devotees By Philip Varghese & Khushboo Panjabi
R
There! Some more Kashmiri separatist leaders have been invited today for consultation with the high commissioner.
epresentatives of the Catholic Community – Judith Monteiro (secretary of Association of Concerned Catholics-AOCC), advocate Joe Sodder (AOCC/CPF–Catholics for Preservation of Faith) and Savio Miranda (Catholics Residents Organisation for Social Service-CROSS) met with the Mount Mary Church and police authorities last evening to ensure that the Cement Road would not be closed this festive season to devotees visiting the Mount Mary Basilica during the Bandra Fair. DCP Satyanarayan Chaudhary assured the representatives that the Cement Road would not be shut to devotees going up to the mount. Sr PI Dhavle of the Bandra police station also assured the same, adding that while the Cement Road would be open to devotees for going to the
mount, Kane Rd would be the Exit Road. “We took up the issue of the closure of the road with Oswald Cardinal Gracias in July itself this year. Since in for the past two years, the police in-charge kept pointing to the safety of the shrine, advocate Joe Sodder sent an email in July to the Cardinal requesting that the road be opened to the devotees. In a reply to Joe Sodder, the office of the Archbishop informed that the Priests at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount will request the police to facilitate transport for aged and sick people wanting to come to pray at the Mount. At the instance of His Lordship Bishop Agnelo Gracias, I had a meeting with the necessary authorities at the Basilica and police officers,” said Judith Monteiro. Last evening, the group met with Msgr Nereus Rodrigues, Rector of the Basilica. A letter from the Rector (No Objection to opening Cement Rd to
pilgrims) is being handed over to the Bandra Police Station. Earlier in the evening, the group met with DCP Pratap Dighavkar (Traffic) regarding the Cement Road and Allowing of Private vehicles/Rickshaw/Taxi carrying aged, handicapped persons (accompanied by one person) to be allowed entry from Mehboob studio to the Basilica. DCP Dighavkar while assuring permission, also directed the group to Sr PI Pradip Chavan of the Bandra-Mahim Causeway Police Station who assured full co-operation and will be assisted by volunteers sent by the team. Meanwhile, BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte has also asked Assistant Deputy Commissioner Prashant Satpale Zone – III, to start with an inquiry on the road based on a complaint received from the the Watchdog Foundation. “The road next to Khan's bungalow is reserved for his safety which is
of a great problem to the pilgrims who gather there every year for the Bandra fair. Last year, the road was open during the fair for 10 days after which it was again closed giving false hopes to pilgrims,” Nicholas Almeida, a trustee of the Watchdog Foundation. “We had written a letter to the CM and the municipal chief to which Kunte has asked the officers to start with a fresh inquiry and submit a report to him. We were told last year that the road will no longer be closed but, it was closed. The security guards deployed at Mannat (Khan's bungalow) and the road do not allow people to take the route as his vanity van is also parked on the ramp.” Prashant Satpale, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, BMC Zone III said, “As per the chief's order, I will be conducting an inquiry to look into the issue and submit a detailed report to him.”

n order to get to the bottom of the mass drug reaction incident that took place on Monday night at the BMC-run Bhabha hospital at Kurla affecting 28 women and causing the death of one of them, the BMC has constituted a three-member committee which will comprise a clinical pharmacologist, a physician and a microbiologist. This committee will investigate the incident from aspects like quality of the drugs and the storage facilities. The 28 women suffered after they were administered ceftriaxone and cefotaxime, antibiotics that are generally used for fever cases. “We would also know what exactly went wrong. This investiga-

Patients recovering, some discharged
Eleven out of the 27 who who were at Sion and KEM hospitals for treatment after the drug reaction, have been discharged. Nine are from KEM Hospital and two are from Sion Hospital. “The patients at our hospital are all fit to be discharged. All of them will be sent home soon,” said Dr Shubhangi Parker, Dean, KEM Hospital. The ones still at Sion Hospital are also recovering but their symptoms have not completely gone as yet. “Out of the 13, two have been discharged. The others continue to have some symptoms like slight fever and uneasiness so we have kept them for observation to make sure that there are no delayed reactions of the drug that they were administered earlier,” said Dr N D Moulick, head of department, medicine, Sion Hospital.

eavy rains in South Mumbai yesterday led to heavy water-logging, causing severe inconvenience to Mumbaikars there. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), keeping to its promise, was seen performing its duty of draining the water, but not everyone was satisfied. Some college students were spotted complaining against the BMC's irregularity saying that every year they have been promising that the work would be done “but we have to face waterlogging as usual”. Water-logging was spotted at Crawford Market, Dadar, Hindmata, Parel, Sion and Andheri. Traffic was also reported in many places which caused problems for commuters passing by.
312 days of water BMC's newly constructed MiddleVaitarna lake exceeded its capacity and overflowed on Wednesday evening. Till date, the lake levels have crossed 13 lakh mn litre. The city's water stock is now sufficient for the next 312 days.A civic official said, “The catchment areas are receiving good rainfall and we are happy this dam has overflowed for the first time since it was constructed in 2012.”The MiddleVaitarna lake has a capacity to store water up to 285 metre. It provides 455 million litre of the total 3,750 million litre daily supply with the city.
tion is challenging because there are several questions that need answers. So we have appointed three members from BMC-run KEM hospital to look into this incident and do the necessary investigations,” said Dr Suhasini Nagda, Director of major hospitals, BMC. Dr Preeti Mehta, Head of Department, Microbiology at KEM hospital, who is one of the three members of the committee, said, “We will look at the way the drugs were administered and the dosage. We will re-confirm and verify all the available facts. The report from the FDA is also of importance if the issue was with the drugs.” The other doctors in the team are Dr Nithya Gogte who is a clinical pharmacologist and physician Dr Milind Nadkar.

As meter recalibration progresses slowly, auto drivers begin fleecing commuters By A Staff Reporter
A
fter the Bombay High Court order to revise the fares of autorickshaws and taxis in the city, there have been a number of incidents of commuters being fleeced by charging them extra fares. The meter calibration kits have not yet reached most auto and taxi drivers even as the Bombay HC has given them 45 days to get their meters recaliberated. Some auto drivers are however charging passengers the revised fare without calibrating their meters. A spot check by the reporter near RCT mall in Ghatkopar and Phoenix Market city in Kurla revealed that the rickshaw drivers are not only charging extra money but also misleading the public by stating that the revised charges are applicable without any calibration and also that with the revised charges, extra Rs 10 will be charged for carrying luggage. Smita Kulkarni (35), a teacher, said, “I was aware of the Bombay High Court order and that is the reason the rickshaw guy could not cheat me. I asked him to come to the police station but he refused and ran away.” “I was not aware of the Bombay
High Court calibration order, I have been cheated twice. I once took a rickshaw from RCT mall to Vidyavihar and the rickshaw driver asked me to pay Rs 17 and said that the Bombay High Court order has come into existence,” said another commuter, Keerti Robin (20). Thampy Kurain, General Secretary, Autorickshaw Union, on the other hand said that it was unfortunate that some auto-rickshaw drivers were indulging in malpractices. “We had instructed the drivers to be honest and not charge the revised fares till the recalibration work is done,” he said.

he Maharashta Navnirman Sena (MNS) has finally received all permissions for developing the Amusement Theme Park 'Maze Jag' (My World) in Bhandup and the bhoomipujan to begin work will be held on Saturday, August 23 in the presence of MNS chief Raj Thackarey. Initially, the Shiv Sena too had been trying to get the requisite permissions for developing this theme park. With an aim to beautify and develop the metropolis, Mangesh Sangle, MLA yesterday announced the unveiling of the party's ambitious development agenda. Sangle said that the theme park will be constructed near the Eastern express highway in an open ground known as Bhandupkeshwar kund and all the necessary permissions and ap-
provals from the state government have been acquired, he informed. He further said, “We also had demanded funds for the project for which the government has allotted us Rs 3 crore and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the BMC has also been received.” The entire work of construction will be divided into two phases with the first phase having all the rides and activity zones and the second phase will include building the swimming pools and fountains. The existent pond in this area will be cleaned up and refilled with fresh water. The entrance fees will be nominal so that everyone can afford to enjoy the park. A final decision on the fees will be taken by the state government. The overall expenditure of the park will be around Rs 10 crore.

Three kg of gold and papers of properties in Delhi, Gorakhpur recovered
T
he Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday conducted raids on bank lockers of arrested Censor Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rakesh Kumar and recovered three kilograms of gold and imitation jewellery. The CBI officials raided two bank lockers located in Mumbai and Vadodra. Two kg of gold was recovered from his Mumbai bank locker while one kg of gold was recovered from Vadodra.
The officials are investigating if the imitation jewelleries have any gold content in it. The officials also found papers of properties which have been purchased in Delhi and Gorakhpur by Kumar. The CBI has already recovered 33 Rolex watches, Rs.10 lakh cash and jewellery worth Rs.5 lakh from his residence. CBI had arrested Kumar on Monday for allegedly demanding Rs.70,000 as bribe
for clearing a regional movie. A source had said that Kumar had made categories of bribes to clear the films according to time frames. If a producer wanted to clear his film within 3-4 days, he had to pay Rs.1.5 lakh while a producer who wanted his film to be cleared in 7-8 days had to pay Rs.25,000. He used to take Rs.15,000 to clear short films with censor certification, the source added.

This was an important base for the interim bail. The court does not imagine submissions and pass orders. This was presented before the court.”
However, the defence lawyer argued that he never said that. “It was never mentioned in any of my submissions that the victim was arrested under PITA. Students from BMC-run schools are still waiting for their 27 items as none have been provided by the corporation since the last year

onths after schools reopened, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has still not provided its students with uniforms and shoes. The raincoats too have not reached the schools till date. The BMC has been unable to give its students 27 basic items that they are promised. Most students thus attend school without uniforms and walk bare feet. Every year, the BMC provides its students with 27 items, free of cost, comprising uniforms, stationery, and monsoon-wear. These 27 items generally have to reach the schools within three months from the date of reopening of schools. However, the students have not been provided with these 27 items for more than a year now. Last year, at the BMC budget session, the corporation proposed cancelling

the distribution of 27 items claiming that it is hard to procure the items for so many students. The latest proposal intends to modify the current proposal and plans to give the students an equivalent amount of money instead of the 27 items. The money would be transferred to the students or their parents' accounts. The ADC spoke to Vinod Shelar, Chairman, Education Committee, BMC, who said, “The process of delivering the 27 items has been nearly completed and the corporation will be shortly giving out 27 items to the students as soon as possible. In case of shoes 70 percent students have recieved it, 50 per cent have recieved the Uniforms and almost all the students have nearly recieved the rest of the items. On the other hand, it takes sometime to distribute and send the items to each and every school which is going on swiftly.”

24-year-old Swapnali Lad, who jumped off from an autorickshaw and suffered a major head injury has shown slight improvement in health. It may be recalled that she was in a coma and was operated upon twice by doctors at Thane's Jupiter Hospital. Her recovery has given hopes to the Kapurbawdi police, where the case has been registered as, the police have been unable so far to get any appropriate clue to poit them towards the accused. The police had detained many autorickshaw drivers in the city and had prepared sketches of the suspects, but that did not help in any way. Now the police have again picked up some suspects, "We have detained suspects, including around 70 private rickshaw drivers, persons working in garages, eye witnesses and are interrogating them. We are also taking the help of RTO. Swapnali herself can now give us the information as she only knows what transpired and can provide description of the auto driver,” said Sushil Kadam, senior police inspector, Kapurbawdi police station. "Swapnali has been shifted to the General ward of the Jupiter hospital after she has shown slight movements by blinking her eyes and hands, she is still in ICU and would take five to six months or even more to recover from the head injury. She is suffering through amnesia," said Dr H Purandare, consultant neurosurgeon, Jupiter hospital.

civic body corporator and her husband were arrested yesterday from their residence in Mahim area for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.15,000 from a person, who runs an NGO in the city, a top ACB officer said. "The duo, identified as BMC corporator Shraddha Patil and her husband Rajesh Patil, demanded and accepted money to refrain from questioning the NGO's slums cleaning work under 'Clean Mumbai Prabhodhan Abhiyan'
scheme," Additional Police Commissioner (ACB) Vishwas Nangare Patil, told PTI. According to ACB, the complainant runs an NGO, which has bagged a contract to cleaning Nayanagar and Gadh slums in civic ward No 181 in Mahim area under the said scheme. The complainant was being allegedly harassed by Rajesh who threatened that he would get the NGO's contract cancelled if he did not get Rs 10,000 every
month. The corporator too had complained against the victim to the BMC authority alleging that the NGO was not doing its job properly. "The victim approached the ACB complaining about the intentions of the couple. The sleuths laid a trap and arrested both while accepting the bribe of Rs 15000," Nangare Patil said, adding that the duo were booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

Congress retaliates by lashing out at BJP, says Govt functions turned into BJP-RSS events
Madhav Bhandari
By Prashant Hamine
W
ar of words has erupted between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan deciding to skip Prime Minister Narendra Modi's functions in Nagpur region yesterday. State BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari termed Chavan's boycott as an insult to the people of Vidarbha region. He added that the Congress has always committed injustice on Vidarbha region. Bhandari stated that the Congress is rattled after all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Vidarbha region were bagged by the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. However, senior Congress leader and former union minister

Anand Sharma commenting on the issue remarked “whatever is happening is an assault on federal norms, government functions are being converted into BJPRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functions.” Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan tweeted: “I will not be sharing the dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi bhoomipujan. I have already thanked the central government for sanctioning the Nagpur Metro viability gap funding. Recently some things went wrong so I have decided not to attend the event”.
Couple of days ago, Chavan was hooted out by the crowd at a function in Solapur in the presence of Prime Minister Modi. Yesterday, instead of welcoming Modi personally, Chavan sent his cabinet colleague Minister for Social Welfare Shivajirao Moghe to welcome Modi at Nagpur. Congressmen from Nagpur waved black flags at Modi's motorcade upon his arrival. But just as the Congress high command asked its Congress chief ministers and other non-Congress state chief ministers to stay away from Prime Minister Modi's function, earlier in the day Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren too was heckled at a rally in Ranchi in the presence of Prime Minister Modi. Even as the Congress issued a dictate to its chief ministers to stay away from the prime minister's functions in their state, Congress' Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked “Just because someone will boycott does not mean we will all follow”.
Do not induct Cong-NCP deserters into Sena or BJP says MP Raju Shetty, leader of a Mahayuti allied party By A Staff Reporter
T
he restlessness and unease amongst the four allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena led Mahayuti is growing by the day over seat sharing for the ensuing assembly elections. The latest to air his disenchantment has been Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty who cautioned the Shiv Sena-BJP leadership over their recent moves to induct leaders from the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In a terse remark yesterday over Sena inducting former NCP leader Sanjay Ghadge from Kagal into the party fold, Shetty advised the Sena-BJP leadership not to induct all party deserters from Congress-NCP and en-
sure that the Mahayuti boat did not sink before the polls. According to Mahayuti sources Shetty has staked claim to 38 assembly seats mostly in Western Maharashtra. Republican Party of India (Athawale faction) RPI-A MP Ramdas Athawale has already staked claim for 13 assembly seats, 10 of which are in Mumbai. Athawale too has demanded 15 per cent share in the next Mahayuti government and a union cabinet berth for himself besides the 13 assembly seats. The Shiv Sangram led by MLC Vinayak Mete has staked claim for 12 assembly seats mostly in Marathwada region. However, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha leader Mahadev Jankar has said that Sena-BJP should not allocate more than 25 assembly seats between the four Mahayuti allies. Meanwhile, the BJP's attempts to induct rebel NCP MLA and former minister Babanrao Pachpute has run into rough weather. The induction of Pachpute which was slated to take place on August 20 has been postponed for now.

Modi takes both, bouquets and brickbats, in his stride

Ponder awhile… “Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the boisterous sea of liberty.” — Thomas Jefferson
Poor mob management by our PM A
S BJP karyakarta or pracharak, perhaps Narendra Modi may feel inclined to condone the boisterous conduct of his cadres who have been misbehaving at various public events he has attended in the last few weeks. As Prime Minister however, he has to uphold the dignity of his own office even if he has scant regard for that of CMs who belong to other parties. He has failed to see rowdyism for what it is, and has not come up with any remark or rebuke against his supporters who have booed and heckled chief ministers right in front of him. Almost goading them on and setting the stage for further misconduct, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain has said that his government respects all CMs, but if people were angry with the CMs, what could the government do about it? There was deplorable behaviour by BJP party workers at a function in Kaithal in Haryana where CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda was targeted, and last week, our own Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan was similarly mistreated in Solapur. The PM was present on both occasions, and he did precious little to reign in the rogue elements. Now that these two CMs have understandably stated they do not wish to attend any functions jointly with Modi, BJP leaders are seeing it as an opportunity to berate and taunt them. BJP leader and head of opposition in the Legislative Council, Vinod Tawde states that the CM should have attended yesterday’s Nagpur event, 'at least to follow protocol.' This would not have sounded petty-minded if he had, given the circumstances, added that BJP workers will also be advised to follow some protocol themselves.

OUQUETS and brickbats keep getting hurled at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but that, one supposes, is on par for the course. Gurcharan Das has some nice things to say about Modi in The Times of India (August 3). According to Das where he expected discontinuity “there is surprising continuity.” To quote him: “Those who expected big bang reforms are disappointed and those who feared an intolerant autocracy are re-assured. The most palpable change is an upbeat mood in the central bureaucracy. No straggling in at 11 a.m. There are reports of quick appointments to the public; the same arrogant officer comes on the phone line and is more helpful. Another change is the quiet way that infrastructure projects have got going and begun to create jobs.... The noiseless shift to self-attestation is a major administrative reform... Three archaic labour laws are about to be scrapped, enhancing employee benefits and making it easier to do business... New rules on inspections have also struck a quiet blow against the dreaded inspector raj... Merely the announcement that five to ten million tonnes of grain from the FCI stockpile will be sold has reduced grain prices...” There is more praise of this kind. Gurcharan, let it be said, is not all praise. He is critical as well. But at the end he writes: “This is not an exhaustive list but it points to a mantra of quiet execution which matters in a country with too much talk and too little action.”
...And his critics Of course, Modi has his critics. Thus, writing in Mainstream (July 24) Kuldip Nayar says what we now have as a “Rightist government” and the Nehruvian ideology which tilts towards the Left “has been jettisoned”. To quote him in some detail: “The public sector will shrink and the rich will expand their area of influence and operation. ...there is no doubting of governance by the rich and the powerful.... There is nothing dynamic about the programme and policies which Modi has unfolded.... Modi's rule so far has been tepid and devoid of any spectacular step to pull India out of the mire of non-development in which it is stuck.... The government looks too timid to take steps which would be considered risky.... In fact, it looks as if Modi is going out of the way to give the impression that

after becoming the Prime Minister he has changed his stance of promoting Hindu nationalism...” And there is more of this. Now some reference to the World Trade Organisation's Trade Facilitation Agreement. According to The Indian Express (Aug. 4) “India has done well not to buckle under pressure from the US” on that issue. The paper said US Secretary of State John Kerry “was neither diplomatic nor truthful when he said India's refusal to sign the trade deal has undermined its image”. “As President Barack Obama gets ready to receive Modi, he should realise that India will hereafter follow a 'India First Policy' in both foreign affairs and trade.
Exciting times for industry
MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath Reciprocity and respect for each other's strategic interests alone will guide India-US ties” the paper added. The Hindu (August 4) had a different view. It said: “Politically speaking, no government can afford to be seen as compromising either the interests of the 270 million people who live below the poverty line or its farmers.... The main grouse India has is that there has been little forward movement on discussing the issue.... Clearly, both sides are guilty of brinkmanship. Yet all is not lost. India has signalled that it is willing to return to the table and has suggested a permanent 'peace clause' until a final understanding on subsidy is reached. Extending the Trade Facilitation Agreement deadline by another six months will not cause harm, especially if it leads to a final agreement on all issues.” Deccan Herald (Aug. 4) was not all that supportive of the Indian stand. “India” it said, “was wrong to block the long-awaited Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) at the WTO meeting in Geneva.” It conceded that India
The Alchemy of Happiness T
HE SOUL in Sanskrit, in the terms of the Vedanta, is called Atman which means happiness or bliss itself. It is not that happiness belongs to the soul; it is that the soul itself is happiness. Today we often confuse happiness with pleasure; but pleasure is only an illusion, a shadow of happiness; and in this delusion man may pass his whole life, seeking after pleasure and never finding satisfaction. There is a Hindu saying that man looks for pleasure and finds pain. Every pleasure seems happiness in outward appearance; it promises happiness, for it is the shadow of happiness, but just as the shadow of a person is not the person though representing his form, so pleasure represents happiness but is not happiness in reality. According to this idea one rarely finds souls in this world who know what happiness is; they are constantly disappointed in one thing after another. That is the nature of life in the world; it is so deluding that if man were disappointed a thousand times he would still take the same path, for he knows no other.
“was caught between two genuine needs” but argued that “it plumped for the populist one”. Said the paper: “Brinkmanship is a part of negotiating strategy but it should not be taken beyond reasonable lengths. It (India) had succeeded in highlighting its commitment to protecting the interests of poor farmers and poor consumers, but should have stepped back from the brink.” Concluding, the paper said: “There is time and there are alternatives to ensure that farmers and poor consumers are protected. Therefore India should drop its inflexible stand and pave the way to an agreement at the next WTO meeting, possibly next month.”
The more we study life, the more we realize how rarely there is a soul who can honestly say, 'I am happy.' Almost every soul, whatever his position in life, will say he is unhappy in some way or another; and if you ask him why, he will probably say that it is because he cannot attain to the position, power, property, possessions, or rank for which he has worked
MATTER & SPIRIT for years. Perhaps he is craving for money and does not realize that possessions give no satisfaction; perhaps he says he has enemies, or that those whom he loves do not love him. There are a thousand excuses for unhappiness that the reasoning mind will make. But is even one of these excuses ever entirely correct? Do you think that if these people gained their desires they would be happy? If they possessed all, would that suffice? No, they would still find some excuse for unhappiness; all these excuses are only like covers over a man's eyes, for deep within is the
The Asian Age (July 27) practically welcomed the cabinet's clearance for a hike in foreign direct investment in Insurance to 49 per cent from 26 per cent. Insurance, it said, “is a necessity, more for the unemployed, unorganised labour, including farmers and agricultural labourers. The paper conceded that it has to be seen whether hiking FDI in this sector will fill this necessity significantly. However it added: “There is expectation that foreign companies will bring in more than just funds – best practices, risk management techniques, innovatively designed products and services and technology. The industry is in for exciting times.” Modi meanwhile received bouquets for his visit to Nepal. The Indian Express (Aug. 5) said that Modi's visit to Nepal “marks a turning point in India-Nepal relations” and “seen in the backdrop of increasing Chinese influence in India's immediate neighbourhood, this was a deft move of strategic diplomacy... This is the right approach.” The paper said that “India must step up its diplomatic over-reach to these neighbours by expanding all-round cooperation with them” adding: “It must enlarge its strategic footprints in these countries without overly taking on China.” The Times of India (Aug. 3) warned that “Modi should unequivocally assert that Nepal's evolving democratic process is an internal matter for that country” and “doing so would also allay fears in Kathmandu that BJP supports a return of the Nepali monarchy.” “Modi's visit” the paper said “has triggered a wave of optimism in Nepal over DelhiKathmandu relations.” yearning for the true happiness which none of these things can give. He who is really happy is happy everywhere, in a palace or in a cottage, in riches or in poverty, for he has discovered the fountain of happiness which is situated in his own heart. As long as a person has not found that fountain, nothing will give him real happiness. The man who does not know the secret of happiness often develops avarice. He wants thousands, and when he gets them they do not satisfy him and he wants millions and still he is not satisfied; he wants more and more. If you give him your sympathy and service he is still unhappy; even all you possess is not enough, even your love does not help him, for he is seeking in a wrong direction, and life itself becomes a tragedy. Happiness cannot be bought or sold, nor can you give it to a person who has not got it. Happiness is your own being, your own self, that self that is the most precious thing in life. All religions, all philosophical systems, have in different forms taught man how to find it by the religious path or the mystical way. And all the wise ones have in some form or another given a method by which the individual can find that happiness for which the soul is seeking. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

‘His rich legacy will live on for ever’ Yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar was the recepient of the Padma Vibhushan and Punyabhushan awards By Amarendra Dhaneshwar B.K.S. Iyengar, the nonagenarian Yoga guru who literally towered over everyone else in this field, breathed his last on Wednesday early morning in a nursing home in Poona. The city which had honoured him with the most coveted 'Punyabhushan' title was his home for over eight decades. Recipient of another prestigious civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, Iyengar who was 96 was active till almost his last breath. Till the age of 90 he could perform the 'Shrishasan' (unsupported head stand) on the edge of a precipice to the astonishment of the onlookers. Iyengar originally hailed from Mysore. He was an asthma patient and the doctors in Mysore had made a grim forecast that he would not be able to see even his 21st birthday. Iyengar became a pupil of Yoga practitioner Sivanand Swamy and developed his own technique of the Yoga exercises which has now been classified in the Oxford dictionary as 'Iyengar Yoga'. His Yoga practices were an offshoot of the age old Hathyoga. Iyengar made Yoga accessible and achievable by introducing the use of props like wooden blocks, ropes and thick blankets. He became an internationally known celebrity thanks to his surefire techniques which cured the

Menuhin also was exposed to Indian music because of his exposure to Yoga and he fell in love with the Indian sounds produced by musicians like Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar and tabla wizard Chaturlal. Later, they became sought-after celebrities. Thus Iyengar was instrumental in exporting the rich cultural heritage of India
to the West. His Yoga schools exist all over India and even in the West. Recently, even the Chinese have been fascinated by the Iyengar Yoga and his students have been going with regularity to teach the Chinese acrobats. Among his devoted followers are well known public figures like actors Naseeruddin Shah, Antara Mali, Ratna Pathak classical singer Neela Bhagwat, visual artiste Shrilekha Sikandar and journalist Ayaz Memon. The Yoga guru was a true exponent and a humble ambassador of the Indian culture. Governor K Sankaranarayanan expressed profound grief over the sad demise of the yoga guru. "He dedicated his entire life to the study, practice, research and promotion of yoga. Indeed, he was an encyclopedia of yoga and an innovator living in our midst. I am sure, his rich legacy will live on for many many years," Sankaranarayanan said in a condolence message here. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan too condoled the death of Iyengar and said his death has left a "vacuum" which will be hard to fill. "Iyengar was famously known as a teacher who would simplify even the most complex techniques of yoga before teaching it to his students. With his demise, the world has lost the true master of yoga," Chavan said.

Narendra Modi is still playing dirty politics after his victory in the last Lok Sabha elections and making his visiting events into political rallies instead of praising the state chief minister and humiliating and insulting state head through his supporters to make the event politically motivated for political gains. The recent insult and humiliation of the Congress chief ministers ruled state is nothing but a dangerous trend started by the PM. It is high time that PM Narendra Modi must stop these stunts of dividing the nation on the basis of caste and religion. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

THIS refers to 'Duncan Fletcher's wings clipped, Shastri appointed team director?' (ADC, Aug 20). The BCCI's knee-jerk reaction, in the wake of the humiliating Test match defeats in England, can only be viewed as a ruse to deflect the blame off Captain Dhoni. Duncan Fletcher, in any case had been a mere 'tourist' in the Indian cricket team all these years. Therefore, he would definitely not mind even if he is 'officially sidelined' as long as he continues to get the fat salary and perks till the World Cup, next year. Well respected and knowledgeable cricketers like Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly and Shane Warne have vehemently criticised Dhoni's weird and inexplicable tactics during the Test matches. But then Dhoni has absolutely nothing to worry because Ravi Shastri has always been a sycophant of ICC Chairman Srinivasan and his 'godson', Dhoni. Every Indian cricket fan knows that the Indian performance in the shorter versions of the game cannot be as dismal as in the Test matches. Therefore the cosy club of Shastri, Dhoni and company expect to erase the bitter memory of the Test match debacles, and return home as 'heroes'.

This fear of keeps these cops away from showing apathy and a lackadaisical attitude in eradicating citizen’s woes and keeping the law in order. We just witnessed the Janmashthami celebrations, all the rules and orders from the honourable courts were imbibed with in letter and spirit by Rakesh’s students. I feel that the khakhi terror must be converted into being friendly and bringing on transparency
and efficiency in the police administration. The police will have to come out with ambitious plans with special reference to attitudinal changes. No doubt, the people think that the police are insensitive, but that is not true. The policemen have to perform very difficult jobs to help people in trouble. But at the same time, their behaviour with people visiting the police stations is usually rude. The police should be more polite and until the police-public relationship is improved, maintaining law and order will be a challenge. Also, public cooperation is equally important for improving the relations. The most important ingredient in police investigation is public support without which the police cannot do much. To achieve this goal, seminars on strategies and innovative approaches for creative and coherent and efficient system for the improvement of the relation between police and public should be organised periodically. — K V Raman, Malad

MNS transport wing president Haji Arafat Shaikh likely to quit party over Muslims being ignored

n what can spell trouble for the Raj Thackeray Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the upcoming state Assembly elections, the party's vice-president Haji Arafat Shaikh, who heads the transport wing of the party, is likely to resign in a week. This news comes just as the leader is scheduled to meet party President Raj Thackeray today on various long-pending issues faced by the Muslim community in the city as well as the state. Arafat Shaikh is known as the Muslim face of the party and has a strong Muslim base within the party. However, sources said that
the resignation of Arafat Shaikh will erode the Muslim base of the party which will adversely affect the party's fortune in the upcoming elections. The matter of Muslims being rattled within the party was first noticed when Thackeray publicly announced his support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was then campaigning for the general elections. After Thackeray announced his support at the party's eighth foundation day meeting in March, community leaders said it only proved that the MNS chief has returned to his hardcore Hindutva plank of his Shiv Sena days. tra have already resigned from their posts and many have quit the party. Speaking to the ADC, Haaji Arafat Shaikh said, “There is around 7.5 lakh members in the MNS transport wing in which more than 60 per cent are Muslims. I have been fighting for the welfare of the Muslim community for a long time now but MNS failed to do anything substantial. Problems like the Haj Committee issue, reservation in the OBC, back-up for Muslim transport workers should be solved. On Friday I am going to meet Raj Thackeray and present him with my demands for Muslim welfare. If he agrees, then I will always be with the MNS. But if they are not solved, I will quit the President Raj Thackeray with Vice President Haji Arafat Shaikh in happier times. part within the week.”
Denied promotion, on-duty employees sport Gandhi topis with slogans of demands demands. “The administration has granted promotions to Class II and III employees, but the same is being denied to more than 750 Class IV workers including those who have completed 18 years in service,” alleged union leader Amit Bhosale. Other demands include housing facilities for eligible employees under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shram Safalya project, permanent work status for contractual staff in the Computer Facilitation Center and better working atmosphere. “There have been rounds of meeting with the civic officials including the commissioner. However, despite verbal and written assurances, nothing seems to materialise. The workers are now fed up with the false promises. Our demands are legitimate, this is our last and final ultimatum to the authorities,” said Dhanesh Patil.
NCP corporator quits MBMC, joins BJP Advocate Ravi Vyas was chief of the NCP’s youth wing.
F
ive months after jumping into the BJP bandwagon, Adv Ravi Vyas tendered his resignation as corporator in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). Known to be a heavy weight youth political leader, having a significant following in the Bhayandar (W) region, Vyas handed over his resignation to Additional Municipal Commissioner Bharat Shitole in the presence of Opposition Leader Narendra Mehta on Thursday. Elected on a NCP ticket from ward number 2(B), Vyas was the city chief of NCP’s Youth wing when he quit the party to join the BJP in March 2014. “The NCP leadership here is virtually disillusioned and the party is fast losing its credibility amongst the populace due to biased and unjustified decisions favouring only the kith and kin of particular family which has turned the party into a private entity,” Vyas said. The official resignation by the elected representative will now ne-
cessitate by-polls for the vacant ward. With a couple of more resignations in the anvil, the by-polls may coincide with the upcoming state Assembly elections, sources
said. “His (Vyas) joining the BJP will not only boost the poll prospects of the party but will certainly help in further strengthening base in the region,” Mehta said.
Govt hostel for tribal students Tribal minister Madhukar Pichad to perform bhoomi poojan of a posh hostel in Mira Road next Tuesday
I
n an attempt to give a boost to education of tribal students and to address their residential problems, the Tribal Welfare Department, will set up a hostel complex in Mira Shiv Sena legislator Road. State tribal Pratap Sarnaik minister Madhukar Pichad will perform bhoomi poojan for the construction of the hostel complex on Tuesday. Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik had been following up on the issue with the tribal welfare department for the last couple of years. Following directions from the Upper Commissioner- Tribal development department (Thane District), the MBMC general body had unanimously passed a resolution to this effect in December, 2013. The state-of-the-art hostel com-
plex having a capacity to house 1,000 students will be constructed on a reserved land (Survey Number:70, Hissa No:1) in an area spread across 4,000 square metres located in the Kaju-Pada area of Kashimira. The tribal department has already made a budgetary allocation of 20.40 crore for the MBMC to act as an executing agency to call tenders and supervise the project within 18 months. “Education of tribal students is one of the primary objectives and this hostel complex will be of great help to them who want to pursue higher education in urban areas,” said Sarnaik. Apart from residential quarters for the warden, security personnel and other supporting hostel staff, the proposal mooted by the government authorities for the complex envisages in-house residential facilities for 1,000 students, computer-lab, library, recreation hall, auditorium, playground, gymnasium and mess (dining-kitchen) facilities.
Combating child labour, trafficking By Abhishek Vissapragada
P
eople have always wondered how to counter the menace of child labour and trafficking and what contribution they can give in this effort. The Child Labour (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 1986 (amended in 2006), Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1986, Sections 361, 363-A, 367, 369 of the Indian Penal Code (deal with kidnapping of minors) are present to provide relief to such children and their families. However, the menace of child labour and begging have not been curbed as yet. But two computer engineers, Shashank Singh and Amol Gupta, based in Delhi and Mumbai respectively, have developed an app to combat this situation. Called 'Helping Faceless' and available on the Android platform, the aim of the app is to liberate children from child labour, begging and trafficking.
The app functions in a simple manner. One has to simply click a picture of the child who they suspect is trapped in trafficking or labour. Then the picture has to be uploaded in the app. The app will initiate a search to match the photo. The search will go through various databases of missing children and kidnapping cases filed at various police stations. If the photo gets a match, the app will then send the data and location of the child to validated children's organisations or NGOs. These organisations will then swiftly reach the spot and help the children reunite with their parents. Shashank, one of the founders of the app, had gone through a similar ordeal in his childhood. When he was kidnapped as a child, he was helped to reunite with his parents by a stranger. This inspired Shashank to create the app so that other children do not face similar situations like him in the future.

Owltail Envy
at The White Owl If you are looking for a strong drink that promises a hit of boozy goodness, try the Owltail concoctions at The White Owl. We love that they use 60ml measures of all the spirits in these special cocktails and recommend Owltail Envy, a heady blend of spiced rum, cinnamon and green apple. The fresh fruit pieces add a refreshing touch. Price `495 Where The White Owl, One Indiabulls Center, Tower 2 Lobby, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel (w)
Cosmo Explosion
at Colaba Social There are several reasons to head over to the newly opened, Colaba Social, and this cocktail is one of them. We love the experience of any deconstructed cocktail and it helps that this one has the added advantage of tasting great too. A concoction of triple-sec, vodka, cranberry juice and lime juice is poured over a cloud of cotton candy at your table. The drink is accompanied by orange zest shavings that bring all the flavours to life. We highly recommend trying this one. Price `300 Where Colaba Social, 24, Ground Floor Glen Rose Building, B. K. Cha La Kai
at Yauatcha When we’re at Yauatcha, we can’t stop sipping on this drink. A combination of whole black grapes, oolong tea, apple juice, sparkling wine and vodka, this drink is a refreshing mix of unusual ingredients, that come together to create a delightful concoction. Price `750 Where Yauatcha, Raheja Tower, Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra (e)
Around the World
at Vicinity While we like Black Jack the best for its fruity flyover, you can actually pick any cocktail from their selection of beer cocktails and not be disappointed. It is one of the few places in the city that serve beer cocktails and make them well. The Black Jack uses a little bit of cordial, which is mixed with a pint of Budweiser. The drink has the signature taste of a chilled beer, but leaves you with a fruity after-taste that makes it a great drink to have. Their Red Riding Hood (`300) is a simple watermelon juicebased vodka concoction, and while it is not the most unique drink of all,the well-made drink is the perfect post-work drink. Price `300 Where Vicinity, Chiron Mansion, Kemps Corner, Warden Road
at The Treesome Café One of the specials at The Treesome Café — Around the World is a mixture of vodka, white rum, gin, tequila, triple sec, diva Cachaca rum and Bianco, and is topped with cranberry juice, Red Bull and a dash of lime. This cocktail is quite strong and will take your meal a notch higher. Price `410 Where The Treesome Café, 7 Bungalows, Andheri (w)
Star Anise Martini
at Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra Martinis are a classic cocktail, but at Masala Library, you are in for a whole new experience, when you order this drink. Made with gin that has been muddled with star anise — an earthy, warm spice, this drink is topped off with an anise aire — which is a spiced foam that has been flavoured with star anise. Price `695 Where Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra, First International Financial Centre, Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra (e)
Cotton Candy Cocktail
at Copa While we are talking about unique cocktails, we couldn’t skip the Cotton Candy cocktail available at Copa. This cocktail contains vodka, bubblegum (yes, bubblegum!) and sour mix. The drink is poured over candy floss and is something that you should definitely try! Price `475 Where Copa, Anna Building, 13th road, Opposite Juhu Gymkhana, Juhu
Chai Tauri
at Artisan We’re sure that you will be raising your eyebrows at us (if you aren’t, then take a look at the price of this drink), but trust us when we say that the Chai Tauri at Artisan is a drink that you have to try, at least once. The drink has simple flavours — just flavoured vodka, masala tea and a bit of fresh mint, but the three come together like magic to result in a drink that is refreshing and flavourful. The Grass (`800) is another drink that you can try and is perfect for those who like fruity cocktails. This one uses lychee and pears and is slightly on the sweeter side, but the curry leaves provide a subtle, but pleasant hint of spice. Price `800 Where Artisan, Sofitel Hotel, Bandra Kurla Complex
Tequila Sunrise
at Silver Beach Cafe If you enjoy tequila, try this cocktail at Silver Beach Café. The drink contains 15ml of grenadine syrup, 90ml orange juice and 45ml tequila, and is garnished with a slice of orange. Price `425 Where Jaldarshan Building, Near Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple, Gandhi Gram Road, Juhu

Not a worthy escapade Shopcade.com is a new website that has been termed the Instagram for fashion shopping. First impressions didn’t do much for Dev Goswami, but after digging a little deeper, he found some potential amidst the clutter. He tells you more...

e’re not quite sure what the word Shopcade means. If the idea behind the name of this website, launched in India in July, is a combination of the words shop and escapade, my experience on the site might make a little sense. Unfortunately, that’s not really a positive sentiment. In fact, the only adventure you’re going to have, is trying to glean something useful off this website by sorting through the dull, unattractive and unformatted homepage.
the exPectation Shopcade is not your run-off-the-mill shopping site. It’s not even your run-off-themill fashion trend site. Think of a mix between Twitter and Instagram, where users only share the best shopping deals, fashion trends and collections from reputed brands. The website collates these posts into categories such as Top Brands (collections from esteemed brands), Top Deals, Top Lists, Top Fashionistas (a group of the most popular users on Shopcade.com whom you can follow to stay updated with like anything but a hotspot for trendy looks. their likes and posts about the latest trends), as The page, with its boring square boxes that well as a personalised feed — what appears have products thrown in seems forced and here will depend on the preferences and tastes ill-designed. that Shopcade has asked you about on your The pictures aren’t even scaled to fit the first log in — so remember to fill them out boxes. emami fair aNd haNdsome iNstaNt fairNess face wash
First things first, we do not support or even like the concept of fairness creams — okay, maybe the concept, in the truest sense of the word, is fine, but the way it is advertised is not. The Emami Fair and Handsome Instant Fairness Face Wash is quite selfexplanatory as to what it promises, and it delivers on that regard. After a wash, my face was noticeably brighter and fairer. However, when it comes to oil removal and freshening up your face, the face wash goes overboard — my face felt dry and painfully tight after a while. Whether you are looking for instant fairness or just want healthy, oil-free and glowing skin, there are much better alternatives in the market. homepage, with too much empty space and just half of each earring visible. Sometimes, it can get so bad that what looks like the back of a chain dress, might actually be a handbag (true story)! Clutches look like square, printed pieces of fabric, cuffs look like pen stands and almost all the sunglasses are missing at least one third of the image. While I understand that previews help each image get more clicks, if these half-images were standardised and seemed to follow some sort of order, it would have made the homepage a little less visually disturbing.

Newly opened Trica Hair Clinic focuses on finding solutions to hair problems. Yamini Walia tells you more
S
kin and hair clinics are dime a dozen, but stand-alone hair clinics are not as common. Enter Trica Hair Clinic, a space dedicated to solving all your hair problems — from dandruff and thinning, to balding and dryness. Located in Vile Parle, the clinic offers a unique experience, with the goal of providing result-oriented, personalised treatments to everyone who visits. They use the latest medical technology and source products from all over the world. As soon as I stepped in, I was reminded of a spa — the ambiance at Tricia Hair Clinic is rejuvenating and relaxing. Every procedure that is undertaken is non-surgical and holistic. You can expect top notch quality here, since it is founded by Rakesh Pandey, who is known for his world class initiatives, including Kaya Skin Clinic. When I visited Trica Hair Clinic, I first met my hair doctor. The doctor was extremely friendly and studied my hair problems quite closely. She gave me useful insights regarding my hair problems and suggested a hair treatment to combat my hair troubles. The discussion lasted for about 20 minutes and I learnt quite a few things about my hair
that I didn’t even know about! After this, I began a hair treatment called Hair Health Plus Purify & Rebalance, which included deep cleansing with a patented scalp purifying solution, a scalp activator massage, application of a scalp protector solution, electroporation to ensure penetration of the solution and hair wash with gentle re-balancing shampoo and hair conditioning pack. The treatment is priced at `2500 (plus taxes) and is usually performed if you have dull, dry hair or if your hair is damaged from pollution. The comfortable and relaxing process lasted for about 75 minutes. There are other treatments available at the clinic as well, all customised according to your hair needs. In my case, the treatment has proved to be quite effective, and even after two weeks, my hair still feels healthy. I would definitely recommend a visit to Trica Hair Clinic — there’s never a better time to take good care of your hair! the Verdict Their terrible homepage design would normally not matter so much, especially since under the hood, it seems like a good concept and a great website to connect shoppers, retailers and fashion bloggers. However, with fashion and shopping websites dime a dozen and pretty pictures all part of the consumer experience, first impressions are, sadly, the last. Unfortunately for Shopcade, theirs is a very negative one. Off the top of my head I can think of at least five shopping websites that would put Shopcade.com to shame — not in terms of content, but in terms of holding the consumer’s interest long enough to make them want to browse and shop. The reason I am so disappointed with the website is because it actually delivers on what it promises — it acts like a one-stop shop for all your fashion related browsing (the online version of window-shopping), is perfect when you want to discover new trends and check out great deals and has inspiring fashion lists (segregated by trends and genres). The Top Fashionistas section is one of the best parts of the website and consists of popular users with a great taste in fashion. Shopcade.com has the potential to give you great ideas for your wardrobe and at the very least, keep you updated with the latest trends. But, they need to redesign their website to make it as lively and interesting as the concept. Where www.shopcade.com

Trikaya, a well known pan-Asian restaurant has refreshed its menu by adding a few new dishes to the already extensive mix. shirley mistry samples them and brings you her verdict
H
aving heard only good things about Trikaya, it’s safe to say that I was really looking forward to trying their acclaimed, pan-Asian fare. Several restaurants boast of serving good Asian food, but unfortunately, only a few pass muster. Knowing that it could swing either way, I stepped into Trikaya on a weekday evening, to find it surprisingly full of eager diners. Settling down at a corner table, away from the gleeful chatter across the room, we were presented with an exhaustive drinks menu. It is easy to see that they go beyond the standard wine, cocktail and mocktail lists and really push the envelope when it comes to alcoholic beverages. After spending a considerable amount of time wondering what drink to order, my dining companion and I decided on the Full Moon Nite (`600) and Watermelon & Chilli Collins (`550). I am very rarely impressed by cocktails. They are usually too sweet or taste too artificial. However, we were told that Trikaya uses only fresh ingredients and syrups that are made in-house. Needless to say, our drinks were spectacular. The Full Moon Nite was a blend of muddled lime, cilantro, coconut rum, midori and green chartreuse, topped with lemonade. The flavours were perfectly balanced, and the resulting drink was both refreshing and clean on the palate. On the
other hand, if you want to try a drink with spunk, look no further than the Watermelon & Chilli Collins. A concoction made with vodka, diced watermelon, lime juice and homemade chilli-infused watermelon syrup, this drink packs quite a punch. The after-burn of the chilli makes this an exciting drink, but order it only if you can bear the heat. We started off tasting their new fare with a serving of the Chicken Dumpling Noodle Soup (`220). Served with a clear broth, the dumplings and noodles don’t paint the prettiest picture. However, take one bite, and you can rest assured that what this soup lacks in looks, it more than makes up for with its flavours. Bursting with subtle hints of coriander, garlic and mixed herbs, this soup is lip-smacking! We followed this up with Sai Woo Chicken (`330), E Fe Wontons (`270) and Peking Duck Rolls with Hoisin Dip (`650). The Sai Woo chicken was good, but nothing that your neighbourhood Chinese restaurant can’t dish out. The E Fe Wantons, filled with shredded vegetables and topped with a garlicky sauce and alfalfa sprouts were an absolute winner. The crunch of the wantons and sprouts, paired well with the accompanying sauce, and saw us spooning up every last dredge from the plate. The Peking Duck rolls were also a
great appetiser. The meat was succulent and the accompanying sauce enhanced the flavour without making it cloyingly sweet. However, we would have preferred thinner rice paper rolls. We began our main course with the Teppan Soba Noodles (`300), Pomfret in Pattaya Sauce (`500) and Sapo Chicken (`380). The Teppan Soba Noodles were lightly flavoured and complemented the Pomfret perfectly. That being said, connoisseurs of Patra Ni Machhi will find the Pattaya sauce oddly similar to the green chutney that is used in the popular Parsi dish. The Sapo Chicken was a better dish, with chunks of chicken glazed with a thick chilli sauce. When paired with Man Tao bread, slightly sweet, steamed rice buns, the chilli isn’t overpowering. Creatures of habit, my dining companion and I couldn’t resist the Khao Suey (`500) and were glad that we ordered it. The soup was delicious, neither too thick nor too thin, and the noodles to soup ratio was absolutely spoton, making it one of the better Khao Suey dishes available in the city. Just when we thought that our meal couldn’t get any better, we sampled the Wicked Chocolate Blob with Cinnamon Kulfi (`300) and Coco Moco (`250). We weren’t too excited about the chocolate dessert, simply because every second restaurant has a variation of a lava cake or chocolate bomb that is hardly ever rich and chocolaty enough. However, the chocolate blob at Trikaya is truly wicked. Dark and decadent, the cinnamon kulfi cuts through the richness of the moist cake, but is a tad too sweet. The Coco Moco was equally tasty, if not better. Thick coconut cream and a generous helping of water chestnuts and slivers of ice make this dessert spectacular. The coconut cream isn’t watery and is just sweet enough, with the water chestnuts adding a delightful crunch to the dish. Trikaya offers great food, warm service and good value-for-money, even though it’s not for budget meal hunters. If you haven’t guessed already, we can’t wait to go back for another meal and recommend that you visit them soon as well!
f you’ve been living in Mumbai for a while, you’re probably familiar with the popular seafood chain, Mahesh Lunch Home. The restaurant recently launched a new outlet in Vashi and while it is a little far away, who would miss out on an opportunity to try it out? Definitely not me! The restaurant is located a stone’s throw away from Vashi railway station, so it’s easy to visit for lunch or dinner even if you’re simply passing through. The décor matches the phrase — luxury meets food, with the interiors symbolising luxury in each and every sense. With so many options to choose from, my dining companion and I were spoilt for choice. This is when chef Arindam Sarkar came to our rescue, as he helped us pick the best dishes available at the restaurant. We began with their Seafood Platter (`2,700) and Pomfret Tikka (`825). While the seafood platter contained pieces of Bombay duck, pomfret, chicken and prawns cooked in different styles, the Pomfret Tikka contained pieces of tandoori pomfret, cooked in a variety of sauces. Both the platters are best described with only one word — outstanding!
Our main course began with Crab in Butter, Pepper Garlic (`650), which was a delightful combination of butter, pepper and garlic prepared in a regular size crab. This is one dish that you can’t afford to miss out on, as the crab is melt-in-the-mouth delicious. The Prawn Butter, Pepper Garlic (`450) was also delicious. At a seafood restaurant, you don’t always expect the chicken dishes to be top-notch, but Mahesh Lunch Home has always had a bevvy of great dishes for diners who aren’t fond of their seafood offerings. Predictably, their Chicken Curry (`250) was cooked perfectly in a thick coconut gravy that was tangy as well as mildly spiced. We ended our meal with their Gulab Jamun (`140), Coconut Payassam (`140), Brownie with Vanilla Ice- Cream (`170) and Chocolate Cranberry Mousse (`170). All the desserts were light on the stomach, which we appreciated, but none stood out more than their new mousse, which is a must-try! All in all, I was highly impressed with the food at this new outlet. The service is quick and the staff at the restaurant are very friendly. However, keep the high prices in mind before you visit. og Falls have always been on my bucket-list of places to visit and so, when an opportunity to visit these falls (located near Honavar in Karanataka) arose thanks to an invitation to a family function, I happily lapped it up.
GettInG there Our journey to Jog Falls started from Honavar (also known as Onore), where we reached early on a rainy morning. Over a breakfast of idlis and vadas, my host, the owner of the beautiful villa that we were staying at, informed me that Honavar was once a seaport in British India. The district has, in fact, been on the trade map since as early as the 16th century. Then we got around to discussing the more pressing issue of reaching Jog Falls. The waterfalls, which are a part of the Western Ghats, are located around 50km from Honavar and are easily accessible by road. Arranging for a car (hiring a cab or getting your own) is a good idea, because it allows you to plan your trip as you see fit and gives you flexibility in scheduling your day. On the other hand, travelling by public transport will mean that you will have to take into account the timings of the first and the last state transport buses that ply between Honavar and Jog Falls and plan your day accordingly. Once you’re on your way though, the lush supari (tobacco), coconut and paddy fields will instantly relax you and push any thoughts of logistics out of your mind.

One of the USPs of Jog safety precautions. Falls is that unlike most other waterfalls, they aren’t tiered — the water drops directly from the mouth of the waterfall into a pool at the bottom. If you ask around, the locals will treat you to fascinating stories about the Sharavati river, which transforms into the Jog Falls. One such story that I was privy to, was about the four streams and their respective falls, which the river splits into just before the mouth of the Jog. The four streams are known as Raja (King), named for its dignified and serene fall; Roarer, because of the tremendous sound that the waterfall generates; Rocket, due ot the large volume of water that streams out of a small opening at a very high speed; and Rani (Queen), which, locals believe, mimics the movement of a female dancer with its winding and twisting trajectory. If you don’t feel like exploring the falls on your own, you can hire tourist vans, which cost around `250 per trip, and will take you around the four popular points of the waterfall. Sharing the cab with fellow tourists to bring your costs down is a good idea — the trip is hardly over 5km and won’t take longer than an hour. My trip to the Jog Falls ended after a hearty meal near the falls. I just couldn’t bring myself to leave the beautiful place and so, shot back to the viewing gallery to take in the amazing view one last time before I bid the falls adieu.
how to reach JoG Falls
Local and tourist buses cross Jog Falls at regular intervals, but ask the reception counter at Jog Falls about the timings and route of the last bus, or you may be left stranded. u By Road: Honavar/ Sirsi to Jog Falls: 60-65 km. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (August 22, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (August 21, 2014) a net 15.80 points (0.20%) and closed at the 7891 point level. The market opened flat at the 7875 points level. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 7919 points level at 10.42 a.m. The index then declined sharply, into the red and registered the day’s low at the 7855 points level at 12.59 p.m. It then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 64 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were losers, while 22 were gainers. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables and banking stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in realty and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 1.15%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 848 were gainers, 706 were losers and 51 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). However, such signals are considered invalid in the over-bought zone. RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.
oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7471 points level. The next support is at the 7321 points level.
Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 7896 points level. The next resistance is at the 7954 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7889 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7858. Support (2) = 7825. Resistance (1) = 7922. Resistance (2) = 7953. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 7896 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday) There is a possibility that it could find some resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 7865) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 7737) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7736) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6776) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.
The government approach towards natural gas prices will become clearer next week as it prepares to meet a September 30 deadline for price revision, petroleum secretary Saurabh Chandra said. Inaugurating three day seminar on Oil-Gas organized by India Tech-Foundation, Saurabh Chandra said the oil ministry was focused on increasing oil and gas production in the short to medium term. Towards this end it was planning a policy to develop 400 marginal fields of ONGC and was in talks with foreign firms to encourage them to invest in the next round of the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP). Many exploration firms are waiting for the government decision on gas prices before they invest and Chandra said the decision would be taken very soon. “The minister for petroleum and natural gas has told Parliament that the gas price would be announced by September-end.

ndia's exports are expected to reach USD 750 billion by 201819 with improvement in the global trade scenario, apex exporters body FIEO said yesterday. Global commerce is showing improvement and it is expected to grow at 4.7 % this year and 5.3 % in 2015, said the Federation of Indian Export Organisations. "We are optimistic that we would be able to cross USD 350 billion this fiscal. FIEO projects an export target of USD 750 billion by 2018-19. This would require a CAGR of 19.14 % during 2014-19," FIEO President Rafeeq Ahmed told reporters in New Delhi. He said India's traditional markets - the US and Europe - are also posting better economic results. These regions account for about 30 % of the country's exports. Slowdown in these western markets have severely impacted India's outbound shipments.
The country's exports in the last three years have been hovering at USD 300 billion. It was USD 312.35 billion, USD 300.4 billion and USD 307 billion in 2013-14, 2012-13 and 2011-12 respectively. The government is taking several steps to boost the shipments. Soon it is expected to announce measures in the forthcoming foreign trade policy (FTP). Ahmed said the Commerce Ministry should announce steps such as incentives for project exports, brand promotion, creation of export development fund, measures for service exports and affordable credit to exporters. Besides, there is a need to revive special economic zones, he added. "There is a need for immediate withdrawal of minimum alternate tax and dividend distribution tax and restore the SEZ policy to its original form. This would go a long way in regaining trust and confidence of domestic and foreign investors." He also suggested that the gov-
ernment give interest subsidy scheme benefit to all the sectors and exporters and extend it till March 2017. To reduce transactions cost for exporters, FIEO D G Ajay Sahai said that time for approvals and clearances should be reduced besides simplification of procedures, reduction of documentation should be given top priority. Ahmed also recommended that the government announce setting up of country and product specific export clusters or parks on the lines of SEZs. "It will help in making India a manufacturing and export hub. Government should special emphasis on boosting manufacturing sector as it impacts exports too," he added. Besides, he said, exporters need to explore markets such as Latin America, Russia and Africa. Exports growth slipped to 7.33 % in July after witnessing a double-digit expansion in the previous two months, pushing up the trade deficit to a year-high of USD 12.22 billion.
Falling Crude, LNG, Coal Prices Huge Positive For India P
rices of “crude oil, thermal coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be under pressure in the long term because of structural shifts like surge in supplies, move to alternate fuel, and slowing demand. This is a huge blessing for India, since energy imports accounted for 36 % of its total imports last fiscal”, believes CRISIL Research. Between fiscals 2009 and 2014, India’s energy import bill surged at an average 14 % annually to $161
billion. We now expect this to rise only 1.6 % annually to $175 billion by 2019 because prices of the three commodities are forecast to decline. Subdued prices will also help curb oil subsidies. “In the last fifteen years, rising prices encouraged significant investments in the oil & gas and mining. Globally, investments in oil & gas exploration and production more than doubled to $5.7 trillion between 1998 and 2013, vis-a-vis the

he fourth edition of the Global Economic Summit (GES) focusing on "Asia: Powering Global Markets" is scheduled from 11-13 September 2014 at the Expo Centre, World Trade Centre Mumbai. The World Trade Centre (WTC) Mumbai and All India Association of Industries (AlAI) are jointly organizing this important Summit. The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India and Government of Maharashtra have accorded their support to this prestigious event. The Summit will discuss and deliberate on various aspects confronting this continent in achieving the milestones of becoming an economic super power. It aims to focus on the issues faced by global investors and businesses and at the same time provide a platform to Asian nations to project their in-
vestment, trade and export potential. The Summit will also offer a platform to those countries who are keen to explore trade and investment possibilities in Asia. The highlights of the Summit are Conferences, Exhibition, B2B meetings, visits to important Industrial Zones and Handbook on Asia. An important feature of the Summit is the General Assembly of World Trade Point Federation (WTPF) which will he held concurrently with GES 2014 at the World Trade Centre Mumbai. The delegates of the General Assembly from over 70 countries will also participate at the GES 2014. Therefore, Indian businesses could avail the benefits of the Assembly by engaging in business discussions and exploring business opportunities of those countries, especially for the SMEs. Incidentally, Trade Point is an initiative of UNCTAD to facilitate business linkages of SMEs through an online platform managed by WTPF.
CRISIL Research expects Brent crude to decline to $90-100 per barrel by 2018 from $109 in 2013, while thermal coal is seen at $77-82 per tonne compared with $84 in 2013. Spot LNG is forecast at $13-14 per mmbtu from $15 per mmbtu in 2013 – all because of improved supplies and relatively subdued demand. previous 15 years. This led to reserve accretion increasing by 1.6 times to 626 billion barrels of oil equivalent over 1998-2013 period” said Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research. Over the next five years, significant supplies of oil are expected from the US, Canada, Brazil and Iraq. Similarly, incremental thermal coal supplies of 1,000 mn tonne are expected, primarily from Australia and Indonesia. The demand growth for oil is expected to be subdued at 0.8-1.0 % over 2014 to 2018 because of increasing energy efficiencies in North America and Europe, slower growth in China and a shift towards alternative fuels. Slowing economic growth in China and India will mean global demand for coal staying subdued at 3.2% over the next five years (against 3.9% in the last five years), leading to pressure on prices. Similarly, LNG demand is also expected to be muted due to lower requirement in Japan and India.
Weak Monsoon May Hit Gold Demand In Rural India Demand in 2014 is estimated to decline to 850-950 tonnes from 974 tonnes last year, says the World Gold Council By A Business Reporter
G
old demand in rural India is expected to be lower this year with weak monsoon affecting household savings, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). However, gold demand during the auspicious Diwali festival is expected to be better, it said, adding that the long-term demand for gold remains "intact" in India despite government restrictions. "Rural demand is not looking absolutely great now because rural household savings are coming down even though it is being expected that monsoon will be back to normal," WGC India Managing Director Somasundaram P R told reporters on the sidelines of an Assocham event in New Delhi. About 7-8 per cent of rural household savings goes into gold buying in India, he said. Much of Indian gold demand comes from rural households, especially farmers. Good crop production raises income levels and translates into greater bullion demand. According to the WGC, India's overall gold demand in the 2014 calendar year is estimated to decline to 850-950 tonnes from
974 tonnes in the last year. Stating that government curbs have encouraged smuggling of gold into the country, Somasundaram said that out of the total demand of 850-950 tonnes projected for 2014 calendar year, about 200 tonnes would be served through grey market. However with easing of import norms since May, gold shipments have rise, he said adding that the government should review these norms and re-
verse them soon. The country would continue to depend on imports as recycled gold is only 10 per cent, he added. Since the gold demand would remain strong for India in the long term, the WGC India chief emphasised the need to find ways to mobilise and monetise 22,000 tonnes of gold stock worth USD 1 trillion held in private hands via formal financial sector, he added.
IT’S TIME FOR I & B MINISTRY TO HELP FILM INDUSTRY: VISHAL R 24
eacting to the arrest of Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) CEO Rakesh Kumar in an alleged bribery case, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj says it is high time that Information & Broadcasting Ministry should come forward and aggressively help film fraternity on various matters. "I have read about it (arrest of CBFC CEO) in newspapers. I think I&B ministry should step in aggressively, it is not just the issue of censor, but other things as well. We have been promised for eight years about forming the category (of films) from 12 plus, 15 plus, 18 plus children but it has not happened yet. We filmmakers are suffering," Bhardwaj told reporters here yesterday at an event.

"There are films that are for 12 plus or 15 plus children so if this category is created it will help us... If you have some adult content in the film, there is pressure from corporate houses and producers to make sure that there is no satellite issue. So, we work under lot of constraints. We entertain people and the ministry should look at our problems. I think I&B ministry should come forward and aggressively help us," he said. The CBFC is a statutory body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to regulate public exhibition of films under the provisions of The Cinematograph Act 1952. Bhardwaj shares similar sentiment as CBFC Chairperson Leela
Samson that, "the transparent method of certifying films is computerisation of applications." Bhardwaj was talking at the music launch of his upcoming film 'Haider'. "First time there will be ten songs in the film which are of different genres of music and we are excited about it," he said. Film's leading actor Shahid Kapoor, who is a trained dancer, found it challenging doing one of the songs 'Bismil', for the film. "It was essential that Haider doesn't dance like Shahid. Haider should have his own body language and style. Sudesh (a choreographer) did the choreography which is different... His choreography is more performance driven," Shahid said. With two back-to-back hits – ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Ek Villian’ – newbie Shraddha Kapoor seems to have hit the jackpot. In a candid interview, she talks to Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur about how things have changed for her and the directors she’d like to work with
Aamir covers all in ‘PK’ poster 2
A STAR IS BORN How do the successes of 'Ek Villian' and 'Aashiqui 2' feel? More than me it has made my parents very happy. They’ve told me that they’re proud of me and happy with my work. I feel great about that. I’ve getting t a lot of offers now but I’m happier because my parents are happy.
How have things changed for you after these films? Nothing much has changed. My dad (Shakti Kapoor) has got me a bigger car even though I didn’t want it. Personally, I think I have become more disciplined. People also recognise me now. So yes, it feels good.
Tell us about those offers that have been coming in... I was shocked and thrilled when I started getting messages and calls from people I look up to in the industry. When Aditya Chopra told me that he liked my work, I was over the moon. Now I have to live up to everyone’s expectations. Who has been your inspiration as an actress? My dad, Shakti kapoor. Dad is a very hard working man. I have learnt to work hard from him. He worked hard for every role and it has not been an easy journey for him. It seems that all of a sudden
you've come into your own? I am grateful for what I've received after 'Aashiqui 2'. After the first couple of flops, I could've disappeared. Nowadays I love the way my name comes up in projects. But I don't get flattered when my name is announced without my confirming the projects.
You are particular about your image... And why not. I would like to be known for being someone who says and does things that she means. So before you ask, the only forthcoming projects that are certain are Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Haider' and Remo D'Souza's 'ABCD 2' which I'll be shooting for in Las Vegas.

fter the controversial bare-all first poster of upcoming Bollywood movie 'PK', which showed Aamir Khan in the buff, generated a lot of heat, the second poster released today shows the superstar donning a traditional Rajasthani attire along with a trumpet bearing the name 'Bhairosingh Band'. The 'poster marketing' is part of the promotional campaign which Aamir said is aimed at 'confusing' the audiences. “Every two to three weeks, there will be a new poster which will be introduced. We will have a poster campaign...we will release eight to ten posters till the film is released," Aamir said. "We want to confuse the people with the release of every poster. But there is a story in each and every image that we reveal." Reacting to the controversy over the first poster, Aamir said, "I have achieved what I wanted to out of the first 'PK' poster. I have got some good reactions from people in the industry. Some people have loved it (poster) and some people didn't like it. The jokes were really funny. Some people even posed in the same fashion and we really enjoyed it. You will understand once you see the film." Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film is set for release in December this year.

There is a great deal of buzz around ‘Mary Kom’. Yes. I hope the film clicks and it has been a real good debut for me with Priyanka Chopra as my costar.
How did you feel while working with Priyanka? She is a very hardworking and disciplined professional on the sets. She has put a lot of effort and research to portray ‘Mary Kom’ by building her physique and learning boxing. She totally put me at ease while enacting scenes and it was easier for me to portray my character of Mary Kom’s husband. Did you work on your character? Yes. I read a lot about Mary Kom and her husband whom unfortunately I couldn’t meet. He is a football coach in real life and since I have played both football and boxing, it was easier for me to essay Mary Kom’s hubby’s role. How was Oomung Kumar as a director? He has a theatre and advertising background and has anchored shows on television and is also an art director which made it easier

Your role in 'Amit Sahni Ki List' was appreciated a lot? We are thrilled that the movie has opened to positive reviews and the audiences thoroughly enjoyed our labour of love. The audiences and critics seemed to appreciate my role, considering my character could melt just a little, but not enough to shatter my perfection. Vir and the script are the reason why I chose the film to begin with –- I believe in his sensibilities and he is a powerhouse of talent. Sushmita Sen played a rather convincing cop in Samay though; Madhuri Dixit played a tough-talking policewoman in Khalnayak, in which she is remembered most for the Choli ke peechay song, though she does a risky assignment in the film, going after a dangerous terrorist (Sanjay Dutt). Hema Malini in Andha Kanoon and Rekha in Phool Bane Angarey had the personality to play cops and the uniform suited them. Dimple Kapadia had it torn off in a harrowing rape scene in Zakhmee Aurat, after which she gets together a band of women and castrates rapists. Bipasha Basu looked good in khakee in Gunah but if an actress got the look and body language of a cop right, it was Seema Biswas in Ek Hasina Thi and Zindaggi Rocks. Going by the promos of Mardaani, Rani Mukerji plays Shivani Roy in a nononsense manner, not encumbered by song-anddance frills. The box-office fate of the film aside, it will create a credible heroine in Hindi cinema.
How was the experience of hard core thrilling stuff like bungee jumping and all? Well, I wasn't a part of the bungee jumping sequence for this film. But I am an adrenaline junkie. Skydiving, scuba diving, surfing, rafting, skiing and trekking are some of my fun weaknesses! I’d do anything for an extra dose of adrenaline!
Please tell us about your background and the films that you have done so far? In a short span of 25 years I have had the fortune of living in three different countries and having extensively traveled around the world. I grew up in an amalgamated mixture of Turkey, India and the US. The acting bug caught me when I saw Yash Raj’s 'Lamhe' as a child. It was my favourite film. I started my career as a commercial model, and was lucky enough to represent brands like Idea with Abhishek Bachchan, Panasonic

Your favourite actors and directors? I have a long list of directors and actors I want to work with! Amongst the directors, my dream list includes Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hiraani, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, Aditya Chopra, Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar, Homi Ajadania among others. Amongst the actors, my all time favourite is Salman Khan! It would be an absolute dream come true if I got the opportunity to work with him. I would love the opportunity to work with Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. Are you open to television offers? In the next few years, hopefully there will be a shift in the Indian television, its on the brink now. But as of now, since I don’t watch television myself, hence don’t see myself being a part of it at this moment. If something interesting comes up, I would consider it for sure!

Just like them Surveen has also started her own production house and wants to produce films in Hindi as well as Punjabi, as she is a well- known actress
in Punjab as well. The 'Hate Story 2' star is planning to produce a Bollywood film which will be helmed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. BERNIE ECCLESTONE DASHES HOPES OF INDIAN GRAND PRIX’S RETURN IN 2015

EW DELHI: Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone today asserted that the troubled Indian Grand Prix has run out of time for a 2015 return and its organisers must settle the contractual obligations for a possible comeback in 2016. Ecclestone was hoping the race organisers, Jaypee Group, will sort out the five-year contract in time for a return next year but that has not happened yet, leaving the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) owners too little time to get the event back on track. Usually, the FIA World Motor Sport Council ratifies the next season’s calendar in September and the final one in December. “It is too late for 2015. We (Formula One Management and Jaypee) are looking at 2016 now and hopefully the tax
issues in India will also be sorted out by then. The organisers also need to settle the existing contract
before we get back. I am expecting to see them next week,” Ecclestone told PTI from his London office. After the event was dropped for 2014, the 83-year-old had revealed that the race promoters had not complied with the contract, mainly the financial side of it. The tax and bureaucratic set-up in India has anyway made the teams and FOM uncomfortable, putting the high-profile event in further jeopardy. As it is, accommodating India on the ever-crowded calendar will not be easy. Mexico’s return next year after a 23-year absence takes the calendar up to 20 races and Azerbaijan has also confirmed a deal to make its F1 debut in 2016. Russia makes its debut in October this year. Ecclestone, however, reiterated his wish for a successful
Indian Grand Prix. “As I have said in the past, we and the teams want to go back to India, irrespective of how busy the calendar is. I hope the environment for our return gets better. Until then, my message to all the F1 fans is that keep watching the sport on television,” said the British magnate, who recently paid USD 100 million to end his bribery trial in Germany. No Jaypee official was available for a comment. Jaypee Sports International CEO Sameer Gaur had bet his life on the race’s return in 2015. Sebastian Vettel completed a hat-trick of wins at BIC last year besides securing his fourth world title. The race saw dwindling spectator interest after making an impressive debut in 2011, when a whopping 95,000 flocked to the stands. The promoters claimed sixty thousand were present on Sunday last year, five thousand less than 2012.

UMBAI: Indian-origin English footballer Michael Chopra was the first pick, though not the costliest, in the International Players Draft of the Hero Indian Super League, signed on by the Sachin Tendulkar co-owned Kerala Blasters here today. Chopra was chosen for USD 58,185 in the first round of the sevenround draft in which all eight franchises of the IPL-style tournament took part. "Pleased to have been by @sachin_rt's team #KeralaBlasters in @IndSuperLeague Excited to be working with David James @jamosfoundation," tweeted the 30-year-old England-born Chopra who has plied his trade for various clubs in his home country. The striker, a product of Newcastle United's youth system, is currently a free agent after being released by Blackpool. Kerala Blasters marquee playercum-manager and former England custodian David James, who has played for big clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City, welcomed the addition of Chopra into the squad. "Chopra, with his experience of playing in English football, was our first choice as a pick in the draft. He is very excited to be part of the team coowned by SachinTendulkar. He wants to improve Indian football and wants to set up academies," James said. Chopra was not the costliest player picked up in the first few rounds of the draft. That distinction went to French central defender Bernard Mendy who commanded USD 80,000 and was drafted in by the newly inducted Chennai franchise. There were 34 players, including Chopra, who commanded a price of USD 58,185 while a dozen others were taken for USD 38,790 each.
Dacourt stresses foreign recruits will help Indian players get better
M
UMBAI: Olivier Dacourt who had completed a thesis on Indian football and was here in India to speak at a Indian Super League workshop earlier in April gave his thoughts after the Indian Super League's (ISL) International Player Draft on Thursday in Mumbai. The former Inter Milan player stated that he was very happy to be a part of IMG-Reliance's project."I am very happy and proud to be part of this project. I have never seen a draft in my life." He also said that the experienced foreign recruits will help the Indian players get better. "If the teams get some players with a lot of experience, that will help the Indians to progress which is very important as the ISL is about Indian football. This competition is for the future of India." The Frenchman who also represented Everton in the past said that for many foreign players, it was the project that drew them and not merely the financial gains."The ISL is a big adventure. When you move from Delhi to Mumbai, it is difficult as you meet new people.”

L
ONDON: Handed the task of overseeing a struggling Indian cricket side, newly-appointed Team Director Ravi Shastri has refuted suggestions that his role would undermine the position of beleaguered coach Duncan Fletcher. Shastri was appointed Team Director after India lost the fifth and final Test against England in under three days to go down 1-3 in the series. “My role is to oversee everything. All of them report to me. This is for the ODI series in England,” Shastri told ‘ESPNCricinfo’. Asked if his position would affect Fletcher’s stature, Shastri said, “Absolutely not. He stays as the head coach. And these two (Sanjay Bangar and B Arun) will be his assistants.” Shastri said he took up this assignment as he wanted to contribute to the team. “It was an important time in Indian cricket. When asked I thought about it and then said, ‘fine’. The state of Indian cricket is such that I know I can contribute. I have never been scared about how tough the job is or how easy the job is. The important thing is the contribution. “If I am here today, and at times some forget, it is because of the BCCI. The platform they gave me when I was a junior cricketer to play for my state and then the country,” he said. On whether he has had a word with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Fletcher after his appointment, Shastri said, “I spent
about two hours with them (on Tuesday). We had a chat about where things are at the moment, how things have to be addressed, and how important communication will be.” Asked what he felt were the reasons for India’s failure in the Test se-
It was an important time in Indian cricket. When asked I thought about it and then said, ‘fine’. The state of Indian cricket is such that I know I can contribute.
RAVI SHASTRI INDIAN CRICKET TEAM DIRECTOR
ries, Shastri said it was inexperience. “If you calculate the number of Test matches played by the XI as opposed to some of the tours where we fared worse, here we at least won a Test match.” “We did not win a Test in 1974 (3-0) and were whitewashed on the last tour here with some of the biggest names (in the team). So if you calculate the number of Test caps between this unit and some of the other units that have come (in the past), it is chalk and cheese,” he explained. “On this tour I saw India’s greatest ever overseas win I have seen. I know it because I have never seen a track like that and with this kind of inexperienced side for them to pull it off. Then I also saw some spineless cricket over the last three Tests matches.” Shastri said India did not show the fighting spirit in the last two Tests. “Spineless means stomach for a fight. People would have accepted 31 if there was a little more fight. The conditions what you saw here, barring the first Test, every track had serious juice on it. When I evaluate everything I put it down to inexperience. When they come back to England (next time) they would be better players,” he said. “People can be judgemental, but we have not played a five-Test match series in a long time. When you play five Test matches in 40 days your fitness gets exposed. But if you are inexperienced it comes to the fore.

Good Asiad and early quota will boost confidence says Manavjit By Soumyajit Majumder
N
EW DELHI: Ace trap shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu is eyeing an Olympic quota place in the upcoming World Championships and is also confident of winning a medal at the Inchon Asian Games that follows. The World Cup gold winner says an early quota place and a good outing at Asiad will “boost is confidence” ahead of the “real test” in Rio two years from now. “The practices are going well and I am pretty hopeful. Asian Games is a big platform and a medal will obviously give a boost before the Olympics, the real test. Moreover a medal ensures that you are on the right track,” said Sandhu, who will be taking part in his fifth Asian Games, scheduled
to start in the South Korean city of Incheon on September 19. While talking about India’s performance in the recently- concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sandhu said, “With every passing tournament India is proving that the country does not only plays cricket. I, personally, am very satisfied with the way we performed but there is a lot of scope for improvement.” The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee also shared his concern for the lack of facilities at the grassroots. “Shooting is often seen as a rich man’s game but I don’t want to put it that way. A lot of young kids today want to come to shooting and be the next Abhinav Bindra but we don’t have sponsors at that level or proper facilities to support them,” he said.
Terry Walsh confident about High hurdler Thingalaya aims for Asiad medal breaking Asian Games gold jinx N By Philem Dipak Singh
N
EW DELHI: It’s been 16 long years that Indian men’s hockey team won a gold medal at the Asian Games, but its chief coach Terry Walsh said that the Sardar Singh-led side has a realistic chance of breaking the jinx in the upcoming continental event to be held in Incheon, South Korea. India won only two gold medals in hockey at the Asian Games (1966 and 1998), and their best finish after that was a silver medal in 2002 Busan edition of the mega-event. But Walsh feels going by India’s latest showing in the Commonwealth Games, his wards will start as one of the favourites in the Incheon Games to be held from September 19 to October 4.
“Yeah, you would think so,” was Walsh’s reply when asked whether India consider themselves as favourites in the Asian Games. “Realistically, that would be the case. That would be fair and reasonable assessment but that doesn’t mean anything as we have seen in the past. It doesn’t matter whether you are ranked 14th or 4 you have to play in a tournament. “We certainly should be regarded as one of the teams with a medal prospect in the Asian Games but we have to earn that,” he said. But achieving the target is easier said than done as India have been clubbed alongside arch-rivals and eight-time and defending champions Pakistan in Pool B. The other teams in India’s pool are dark horse China, Oman and Sri Lanka. Walsh is fully aware about the task at hand but feels that having not played top-class international hockey for quite some time, the pressure would be more on Pakistan than India. “I think if there is any pressure that would be more on a team which has not played at this level for 12 months or so. They have a bunch of younger guys who haven’t had a lot of international experience at this level.”
EW DELHI: Back in form with a national record-equalling performance after a “horror show” in the Commonwealth Games, high hurdler Siddhanth Thingalaya feels he stands a bright chance of winning a medal in the upcoming Asian Games. Thinaglaya has been one of the most talented Indian athletes to have come up in recent years since breaking into the scene by smashing the 110m hurdles national record with a 13.81 secs run in 2010
as a 19-year-old. He has since improved his own national record to 13.65 secs in 2012 before equalling the same two days back in the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships in Patiala. His effort came on a slow track at the NIS which was laid in 2011 but worn out considerably due to hot climatic conditions. “I feel I am in my top form after injuries and indifferent form. I want to win a medal in the Asian Games and that will be a big achievement. I think I can do it,” Thingalaya told PTI in an interview.
BFI fumes after Sikh player asked to remove Patka N
EW DELHI: The Basketball Federation of India today condemned FIBA Asia for forcing Sikh player Anmol Singh to remove his ‘Patka’ during an Under-18 Championship match in Doha, saying that the “unwarranted action” was discriminatory and humiliating. “The Basketball Federation of India strongly condemns the unwarranted action of Technical Commission of FIBA Asia taken against Anmol Singh and asks them to stop discrimination against Sikh athletes representing Indian Basketball teams at international level immediately,” the BFI said in a statement. BFI said the India team’s manager in Doha, Shafique Ahmed Shaikh, has been contacted and he had taken up the matter before the start
of the tournament. “...He was informed by the Director Technical Commission – FIBA Asia that this issue will be taken up during FIBA Central Board meeting after this Championship at Seville, Spain on 28th and 29th August, 2014, till then the Technical Commission, FIBA Asia is bound to follow the rules,” the BFI said. “The FIBA Commissioner, initially had no objection and allowed Anmol Singh to play in the first Quarter of the game with his Patka, which is a religious right of the Sikh community. But when Anmol re-entered the Court in the second quarter, he was told to remove his Patka, which caused humiliation to the Player and affected the performance of the team in that particular match.”
