Country has 65 million diabetic people, which is one-fifth of the world’s diabetics; Observer Research Foundation (ORF) to come out with a declaration

W

hile the alarming statistics regrading diabetes are known by all, not enough is being done to create the kind of awareness that is required to let people and the government know the seriousness of this problem. So, as a start to this long-time pending movement, the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), Mumbai is planning to come out with a declaration on diabetes for the city where responsibilities of all stakeholders like the government, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, non-governmental organisations, educational institutes, employers, the media and of course diabetics themselves, will be enlisted. The five-page draft of the declaration is ready and the final draft

n the occasion of its 65th anniversary, the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) has committed to provide comprehensive sex education to schoolgoing children and youngsters in communities across the city through its modules on sex education and get more people as volunteers to further this cause. The mode of training focuses on explaining the different biology of men and women and also deals with the crucial dilemma of the youth when dealing with peer pressure or misconceptions about sex. “Through activity-driven workshops, we tell the youth that forcing a partner into sex is wrong. Girls and boys are made to understand that no one can force you to act in a way in which you don't want to,” said Amita Dhanu who heads the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) programme

will be out on Saturday, July 26 after a round table conference with all the stakeholders in the presence of state health minister Suresh Shetty. The declaration will be endorsed by him and the concerned officials from the BMC as well because the BMC too has given its inputs and helped in making the draft. “The draft of the declaration has been prepared after studying similar declarations of several countries. We have taken points relevant to India and made the required modifications to suit our needs. A lot of research and efforts have gone into the making of this,” said Gautam Kirtane, Research Fellow, ORF. Speaking about what the declaration comprises, Shaheeda Kirtane, Associate Fellow, ORF said, “The declaration will talk about rights of

diabetics in Mumbai. This will comprise: guaranteed timely access to affordable medication, supplies and quality medical care irrespective of their income or location, minimising risk of complications by having their eyes, feet, kidneys, blood glucose control and cardiovascular risk factors checked as frequently as recommended and at an affordable cost, access to latest diagnostic tools and therapies such as continuous glucose monitoring

and insulin pump therapy for improved management of diabetes, access to affordable and fair insurance coverage etc. It will also talk about their responsibilities like managing their own condition to the best of their abilities upon receiving education after diagnosis, be involved in planning, monitoring and implementing their treatment and health goals, be regular with follow-up visits and testing regimen, promptly notify family, friends and educational institutes of their diabetic condition so that they can be supportive in general and prepared for emergency situations.” The other issues covered by the declaration would be responsibilities of Mumbaikars with regard to awareness, self monitoring of sugar levels, following a healthy lifestyle

and responsibilities of the central, state and local governments of creating awareness among diabetics as well as non-diabetics about this condition, developing universal screening programmes, talking about prevention, establishing robust data collection and records maintenance system to monitor prevalence and efficacy of treatment options, to state a few. “The final declaration will be an amalgamation of inputs from all stakeholders. We will make sure that there is a commitment to take this ahead from all the concerned authorities. We will surely follow up on this,” said Gautam. “Right now, we have started this at the a city level but we intend to scale it up to the national level, soon,” said Shaheeda. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

at FPAI. “Critical thinking, negotiation skills, self-confidence and developing empathy towards one another is taught in the programme. After conducting the workshops with 400 adolescents in Dharwad, Karnataka, it was observed that boys had stopped eve-teasing girls in schools,” she added. Last year, up to 80,000 adolescents were made aware about issues pertaining to gender, sexual and reproductive health as well as HIV, sexual rights and sexual citizenship, pleasure, violence, diversity and relationships by FPAI. Nearly 70 per cent of the youngsters who completed this 12-hour training module were in schools or colleges and 30 per cent were in out-of-school settings. About 2,555 peer educators and 2,051

teachers have been trained to provide CSE to children. FPAI is calling on parents, teachers and young people to come up and be volunteers for furthering this cause. “We are right now providing CSE workshops to ten semi-government aided schools across Mumbai. We definitely want more volunteers to be peer educators so that more and more people can be reached out to,” said Dr Kalpana Apte, assistant secretary general of the FPAI. In 2006, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala had stopped the inclusion of sex education as a part of the school syllabus after the state governments vociferously protested the Union's decision to implement the United Nations approved syllabus.

Continued from pg 1 « said, “The Shiv sena should apologise for his act and the central government should register an FIR in this case under section 153 (2) of the IPC for hurting religious sentiment. Forcefully feeding in the mouth of anyone is a crime. Either they should apologise or government should take swift action.” Maharashtra Unit of the Samajwadi Party also criticised the incident. "For the first time I am at a loss of words to comment on their behaviour towards muslims. These uncultured MPs should be given strict punishment and taught how to conduct themselves in public as they are now elected representatives," SP's Maharashtra President Abu Azmi said. He added that Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray should conduct training camps for his MPs. "Uddhav Thackeray should conduct a training camp for his MPs where they should be taught that they are not in their villages anymore. They have no regard for law and are destroying the image of politicians in front of the public. They do not deserve to be MPs," he said. Bala Nandgaonkar of MNS said it was wrong for the Sena MPs to force a Muslim to break his fast. "I am not completely aware of the incident. But if they did force a Muslim to break his fast, it is very wrong. One should make sure that people of all religions are respected," he said. There was outrage after videos emerged of a Shiv Sena MP allegedly thrusting a 'roti' into the mouth of a catering worker over being served poor quality food last week.

He said, “I am sure this boycotting will make a difference in the war.” The ban is now temporary, but if things get worse, Munna

Yasim Palampurwala, the owner of Kuba and Sagar restaurants in Mumbra, said, “We pray that this ban will have some immediate effect. “Customers used to ask for these particular brands at first, but after we posted a banner outside the hotel, they have stop asking and are happy with the replacement products,” added Palampurwala.

The ban was implemented on July 19, a day after an association of the Mumbra hoteliers met and unanimously decided to do away with these American products, noting that America is supplying arms and weapons to Israel in its war against

Palestine. Mumbra's bigger hoteliers took this initiative after meeting with all the hoteliers in the area. This step was then followed by the hoteliers in Bhiwandi and other parts of Thane. Don't have hatred for other religions: Uddhav

Amid an outrage over Shiv Sena MPs force-feeding a Muslim catering worker fasting during Ramzan, its President Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the uproar over the incident was an attempt to 'silence' his party's voice. He, however, said despite being a votary of Hindutva, Shiv Sena had no hatred for other religions. "This (uproar over the incident) is an attempt to silence Shiv Sena's voice. We are proponents of Hindutva but we don't have hatred for other religions," Uddhav told reporters in Aurangabad.

State govt doesn't want incident to blow up

Maharashtra government was concerned over the incident at New Maharashtra Sadan where a Shiv Sena MP was caught on video forcing a fasting Muslim employee to eat a 'roti', but did not want it to acquire a communal colour in "an election year", a senior minister said. The Parliament secretariat had asked the state government for a report on the incident, and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had directed the Chief Secretary J S Saharia to respond immediately, a senior minister told PTI. "In an election year, we cannot afford to allow such incidents getting communal colour, and the Chief Minister has asked for the matter to be resolved at the earliest," said the minister.

IRCTC team to inquire into incident

IRCTC has constituted a fact- finding team to inquire into the Maharashtra Sadan incident and asked it to submit its report in three days. The committee comprises Amitabh Nigam, Group General Manager of Departmental Catering Service, and Maitreyi Brahma, Group General Manager of HRD, an official said.

Vikram Kasar, university representative at the JJ School of Arts, said, “We want well-qualified faculty as per the MPSC guidelines. wo weeks after principal L Reddy (42) and teaching staff Dattakumar Patil (37) of St Stephen’s School for special children in Dadar were arrested on charges of alleged sexual abuse of schoolgirls and sent to judicial custody for 14 days, a delegation of community members led by the Association Of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) led by advocate Arcanjo Sodder and secretary Judith Monteiro met with Senior Inspector Nishkant Patil of the Dadar Police Station on Wednesday, in support of the principal and teacher, requesting the police to finish the investigation as soon as possible. The delegation also consisted of representatives of the Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum (MCYF), parishioners living near the school and community members in Mumbai.

This comes weeks after the two were arrested when a 13year-old student of the school sent a complaint letter to the police through her lawyer. After the first complaint, more students opened up. Five victims, including the original complainant and a 19-year-old former student, had recorded their statements. “Visibly shaken parents of the students and ex-students were seen expressing their support to the principal and the teacher and the school as their children had studied there since kindergarten, and they never had any complaints. Advocate Joe Sodder of AOCC affirmed that it appears the principal has been falsely implicated. The management of the school did not share any information as the matter was sub judice. As the principal and teacher has been arrested for over 20 days, AOCC felt that the si-

AOCC insisted that the principal and teacher seek police protection during school hours lest any further false complaints arise at the insistence of certain interested parties (as learnt from

reliable sources) who want the complete staff to be replaced by persons of their choice,” said Judith Monteiro. She further added, “I have been associated with the principal and the teachers for over a decade on community work. Implications of Dattu’s comments The insensitive remarks of the Supreme Court Judge on the Kandhamal victims raises genuine concerns for the Christian community. Dr Abraham Mathai, president of the Indian Christian Voice and ex vice chairman of the State Minorities Commission, said, “The observation of the Supreme Court Judge H L Dattu on the Kandhamal case 'that churches damaged during the Kandhamal riots in December 2007 were not entitled to any compensation as they get sufficient funds from foreign countries' is extremely unfortunate and insensitive in the sense that communal forces will be emboldened to go on an anarchy spree, destroying church property with impunity. It is also not right for Justice Dattu to jump into such illogical conclusions based on faulty assumptions that churches get sufficient funds from foreign countries. Even if

that was the case, it is no justification for the deliberate destruction to their property. “Dismissing the counsel’s appeal on behalf of the families of those who died due to the deplorable conditions in relief camps is also unfair since they did not end up there on their own volition but were forced there trying to flee from the attackers. The state in every civilized society has the moral responsibility and duty to protect its citizens. In the event of failing to do so, especially from acts carried out by criminal elements, they should provide appropriate compensation, commensurate with the damage inflicted. Failing to do so will set a very bad precedent for communal elements to take advantage and terrorise the vulnerable minority communities who are already living under fear in the current political dispensation.”

true, why have they not been able to bring enough evidence against him?” According to the MCOCA act, for the accused to be granted bail, they should convince the court they would not be involved in illegal activity during the bail period. “There is no direct evidence of any links of the accused with the terror organisation,” argued Solkar. The defence counsel also argued that the chargesheet was ambiguous about their role. Based on this, Justice Abhay Thipsay granted him bail against a surety of Rs 50,000. The bail was granted on the condition that he would not tamper with evidence or try to influence witnesses and will mark his presence before MCOCA at Mumbai court once in week. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

The police has so far recorded the statement of over 20 people associated with the building. A police team has also visited the site to understand the sequence of events that led to the blaze, said another officer. “According to fire bridge officials, the building flouted safety norms. Fire fighting systems were not in place, open spaces were used as godowns and exit routes were cluttered, etc,” the officer said, adding that the lessees, the office owners and the building committee did not ensure all the safety norms were followed. Quoting fire officials, the police said, owners and occupants had also carried out altercations without permissions which caused hurdles in the fire fighting operations and led to the death of the fireman.

umbai's crime Branch on Tuesday arrested seven robbers including one of the most notorious gangsters of the Amar Naik gang in connection with a robbery case. The arrested gangster, Sudhir Shinde, supposed to be the last active member of the Amar Naik gang, was arrested along with his aides from Andheri. The latter and his aides had committed a daring robbery in the house of a veteran doctor, Vijay Bhatt, in Jogeshwari, wherein the robbers had fled with cash and valuables worth Rs 25 lakh. According to the police, 43year-old Shinde, Pravin Sawant (30), Sahil Ahmed

Accused Shinde has 21 criminal cases registered against him including murder, robbery, extortion and other serious cases under the IPC. On several occasions, Shinde has been externed from city limits, the police said, adding that after the killing of Amar Naik in a police encounter in 1996, Shinde remained in jail for nearly 10 years. After coming out of jail in 2004, he started working on construction sites in the city as well as began solving small-time disputes of businessmen and builders in the western suburbs. However, he could not operate the gang like his mentor Naik, said Pathangare.

Shaikh (35), Rakesh Palav (23), Suryakant Mhasane (37), Deepak Gurav (36) and Ganesh Sawant (33) were arrested in the two-day operation conducted by the sleuths of Unit 8 of the crime branch. “Ganesh, one among the seven arrested, was employed as an operation theatre assistant with victim Bhatt,” said Deepak Phatangare, senior inspector of Unit 8. Ganesh

provided information about the Bhatt family to Shinde but did not directly participate in the robbery, added Phatangre. The robbery took place on July 11 at Vindhyachal Apartment in Jogeshwari where the doctor lives with his parents, wife and sister. The doctor was not at home at the time of the incident, which took place at 4 pm. Two men came up to fifth-floor apartment, saying

that they wanted to deliver a gift. Bhatt's Ashish Eye Hospital, is situated in the same building As soon as Bhatt's sister opened the door, the two forced their way inside, the police said, adding that four other accused, who were waiting nearby, also followed their accomplices inside, brandishing guns and choppers. The family managed to free themselves and alerted the cops after all the accused had fled from the crime spot. Acting on information, the cops laid a trap in suburban Andheri and nabbed the first three accused. Their interrogation revealed the names of the rest involved in the robbery. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

en staffers of a eatery selling Chinese food in Mira Road were injured following a massive fire on Wednesday afternoon. According to the police, the incident was reported at about 1.30 pm from 89 China Town – a fast food eatery operating near Jangid Circle in Mira Road. Fire brigade personnel doused the fire after an hour of fire fighting operations. Although the exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, an apparent leakage from a ruptured gas pipeline allegedly due to the negligence of a contractor triggered the fire which

sparked off from the kitchen and later engulfed a major portion of the eatery. While 10 employees of the eatery were injured, two of them including the manager – Hemant Shettigar – sustained severe burns and are being treated at Thunga Hospital, the police informed. “While eight people who were admitted with minor injuries have been discharged after treatment in the OPD section, two others who suffered 14 to 15 per cent burns are under treatment but their condition is stable,” confirmed Dr Satish Shetty. The Mira Road police are conducting further investigations into the case.

CCORDING to the most recent United Nations report, India has the sixth highest prevalence of child marriage in the world with one in every three child bride living in India. Though child marriage among girls is most common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, India is among the top 10 countries with the highest rates of child marriage, UNICEF said in a report titled ‘Ending Child Marriage — Progress & Prospects’. “South Asia is home to almost half (42 per cent) of all child brides worldwide; India alone accounts for one third of the global total,” the report said. the media of adulterated milk, oil, pulses and tea being sold. The Food and Drugs Administration of India (FDA) moves once in a blue moon, raids the dens where adulteration is carried on, makes some arrests and it is conveniently forgotten. The illegal activity, however, does not end with such raids. Sometimes a minister might accompany the raiding party. That, however, does not make any difference. Perhaps the FDA cannot be blamed. It just cannot cope with the vast work involved. A recent survey shows that as much 60 per cent of the oil samples – when tested – showed adulteration with low-cost edible oil palmolein. Milk is adulterated with water: genuine milk in the packs are taken out, mixed with water and sold. The water used is not even boiled: It is just tap water or even impure water from dirty sources. The racketeers appear to be experts in adulterating any substance. They know how to choose the right colour so that the finished adulterated product appears as genuine. If the criminals are caught, put on trial, convicted and sent to jail for a long, deterrent term in jail, the menace of adulteration can perhaps be, to some extent, contained.

Complications in pregnancy In India, about 27 per cent of women aged 20 to 49 years were married before age 15. About 31 per cent of women in that age group were married after age 15 but before they turned 18. But the median age at first marriage is 19. 7 years for women in the richest quintile compared to 15.4 for the poorest women. In the Dominican Republic and India, the wealthiest women marry about four years later than the poorest women. According to the newly-released data, child marriage is widespread and can lead to a lifetime of disadvantage and deprivation. “Girls who marry before they turn 18 are less likely to remain in school and more likely to experience domestic violence. Young teenage girls are more likely to die due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth than women in their 20s; their infants are more likely to be stillborn or die in the first month of life,” it said. UNICEF said that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage are the two practices that affect millions of girls across the globe. It said while prevalence has decreased

slightly over the past three decades, rates of progress need to be scaled up dramatically to offset population growth in the countries where the practices are most common. “Female genital mutilation and child marriage profoundly and permanently harm girls, denying them their right to make their own decisions and to reach their full potential.” “They are detriments to the girls themselves, their families, and their societies,” UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said. “Girls are not property; they have the right to determine their destiny. When they do so, everyone benefits.”

PERSPECTIVE Yoshita Singh Meanwhile, British Prime Minister David Cameron has called for a worldwide ban on FGM and child marriage as he launched the first UN-backed ‘Girl Summit’ on issues that affect millions around the globe. In Britain parents would face prosecution for failing to prevent their daughters from being subjected to FGM, while setting out steps to tackle both practices in developing nations, reports PTI. “Our aim is to outlaw FGM and child marriage everywhere for everyone,” Cameron told the summit in London, to applause from an audience of experts and campaigners from around the world. FGM, which affects tens of millions of women, particularly in the Horn of Africa, ranges from removal of the clitoris to the mutilation and removal of other female genitalia. It can leave girls at risk of prolonged bleeding, infection, infertility and even death. Cameron acknowledged that ending FGM and child marriage was no easy task, saying they ranked alongside the global health threats of polio and tuberculosis in terms of the commitment needed to tackle them. But he argued: “All girls have the right to live free from violence and coercion, without being forced into marriage or the lifelong physical and psychological effects of female genital mutilation.

How to conquer destiny? A

well-to-do lady said, “I am blessed with everything that a human being would like to have”. Her voice choked. Controlling herself she continued slowly, “I have all that I want, a human being may want… but… I do not have peace of mind. Something prevents it. Probably my destiny”. There was silence for a while. Then Sri Ramana Maharshi spoke in his usual sweet manner: “All right, you have said what you wished to say. Well, what is destiny? There is no destiny. Surrender, and all will be well. Throw all responsibility on God and do not bear the burden yourself. What can destiny do to you then?” Lady: Surrender is impossible. SRM: Yes, complete surrender is impossible. Partial surrender is certainly possible for all. In course of time that will lead to complete surrender. Well, if surrender is impossible what can be done? There is no peace of mind. You are helpless to bring it about. It can be done only by surrender.

Lady: Partial surrender – well, can it undo destiny? SRM: Oh yes, it can. Lady: Is not destiny due to past karma? SRM: If one is surrendered to God, God will look to it. Lady: That being God’s dispensation, how does God undo it?

MATTER & SPIRIT SRM: All are in Him only. It is asked, why all this creation so full of sorrow and evil. All one can say is that it is God’s will, which is inscrutable. No motive, no desire, no end to achieve can be attributed to that infinite, all-wise and all-powerful Being. God is untouched by activities which take place in His presence. There is no meaning in attributing responsibility and motive to the One, before it became many. But God’s will for the prescribed course of events is a good

“Abhorrent practices like these, no matter how deeply rooted in societies, violate the rights of girls and women across the world, including here in the UK. “I want to build a better future for all our girls and I am hosting the Girl Summit today so that we say with one voice — let’s end these practices once and for all.”

Community activism The UN report added that more than 130 million girls and women have experienced some form of FGM in the 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East where the harmful practice is most common. Apart from extreme physical and psychological pain, girls who undergo FGM are at risk of prolonged bleeding, infection, infertility and death. Kenya and Tanzania have seen rates of FGM drop to a third of their levels three decades ago through a combination of community activism and legislation. In the Central African Republic, Iraq, Liberia and Nigeria, prevalence has dropped by as much as half. “Attitudes are also changing: recent data show that the majority of people in the countries where FGM is practiced believe it should end, but continue to compel their daughters to undergo the procedure because of strong social pressure,” it said. “But without far more intensive and sustained action now from all parts of society, hundreds of millions more girls will suffer profound, permanent, and utterly unnecessary harm,” it added. The report said if rates of decline seen in the past three decades are sustained, the impact of population growth means the number of women married as children (more than 700 million) will remain flat through 2050. “The numbers tell us we must accelerate our efforts. And let’s not forget that these numbers represent real lives. While these are problems of a global scale, the solutions must be local, driven by communities, families and girls themselves to change mindsets and break the cycles that perpetuate FGM and child marriage,” the UNICEF executive director said. “We can’t let the staggering numbers numb us — they must compel us to act.” solution for the vexed question of free-will. If the mind is worried over what befalls us, or what has been committed or omitted by us, it is wise to give up the sense of responsibility and free-will, by regarding ourselves as the ordained instruments of the All-Wise and the All-Powerful, to do and suffer as He pleases. Then He bears all the burdens and gives us peace. To a devotee who was praying that she should have more frequent visions of Siva, He said, “Surrender to Him and abide by His Will, whether He appears or disappears; await His pleasure. If you ask Him to do as you like it is not surrender but command to God. You cannot have Him obey you and yet think you have surrendered. He knows what is best and when and how to do it. His is the burden. You have no longer any cares. All your cares are His. Such is surrender. That is devotion.” God’s grace consists in the fact that He shines in the heart of every one as the Self; that power of grace does not exclude anyone, whether good or otherwise. Seekers should, overcome afflictions with a cool mind, and the firm faith that they occur by the grace of God, to help to steady the mind. – Sri Ramana Maharshi

THE Indian cricket team 'lorded' over England at the the Lord's, the Mecca of Cricket, giving a superb all round performance and recorded a stunning victory after a gap of 28 years at the Lord's. The young Indian side should be complimented for this as it came after a drought of defeats at the Test level in the recent past. Also, a Test victory away from home should be cherished and savoured sweetly as we won't succumb to failures when we are in alien conditions anymore. The first two Tests also saw the embarking on the scene of a genuine all-rounder in the form of Bhuvanesh Kumar who stole the show with his excellent stroke as also with his swing bowling. He should be given a promotion in the batting order as it would entail a bigger contribution from him. Stuart Binny also showed some promise. Murali Vijay and Ravindra Jadeja also deserve accolades. However, our main batsmen like Virat Kohli and Pujara failed which should not be alarming because they have the ability and the potential to bounce back. I also feel that R Ashwin should have a go at the England batsmen in the following Tests because he can make a huge difference. All the best to our team in its future forays.

Three-city tour visit to focus on aerospace, retail and education sectors

L

ONDON: Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will lead a large business delegation on a three-city tour of India next month, focusing on aerospace, retail and education sectors. The Liberal Democrat leader and coalition partner in the UK government said he will lead the large business delegation to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. "It will be the first and the largest delegation of its kind since Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi was elected in that extraordinary democratic extravaganza...The greatest act of democratic volition that the world knows," Clegg said while addressing a gathering of politicians and business leaders at a special reception hosted at Whitehall in London. His remarks were made in the lead up to his India visit around the end of August. The exact dates for the visit are not yet known. "I am keen to create a delegation that focuses on some key sectors of aerospace, retail and education. It's an invidious choice but I think it is best that these kind of ventures focus on specific sectors to build bridgeheads where they need to be built, to deepen relationships where they need to be deepened, and to find new commercial opportunities where those can be found," Clegg said. "I come with a message of openness towards new commercial opportunities and forging a strong relationship with the new administration of Prime Minister Modi," he said. Endorsing Prime Minister Modi's economic agenda, he said: "The visit is well timed because Prime Minister Modi has been so clear and out-spoken in his view that he

Woman TTE attacked by 3 ticket-less commuters H

YDERABAD: A woman travelling ticket examiner (TTE) was allegedly assaulted by three ticketless female passengers on board a local train on Wednesday, Government Railway Police (GRP) said. While two out of three attackers have been detained, attempts are on to trace another woman who was also allegedly involved in the incident, Nampally GRP Inspector Lingeshwar Rao told PTI. The incident occurred when the TTE, Kausalya detected a group of ticket-less passengers while checking tickets on Falaknuma–Lingampalli Multi-Modal Transit System service (local train), and asked them to pay the fine. However, the passengers including the trio argued with her. The trio later manhandled Kausalya when

the train was nearing Begumpet railway station, Rao said. "Among the ticket-less women passengers who assaulted the TTE, two were detained and a case has been registered against them," he said. Kausalya, who is under the Secunderabad division, was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries. Meanwhile, strongly condemning the incident, South Central Railway (SCR) said stringent action would be taken against the offenders after necessary investigations. "The incident wherein a lady ticket checking staff performing her duty has been obstructed and assaulted by unauthorised passengers travelling in an MMTS train is strongly condemnable," the SCR said in a statement.

Fulfill Vidarbha statehood before polls: Muttemwar N

EW DELHI: Centre should take immediate steps for carving out a separate Vidarbha state from Maharashtra before the assembly elections "as promised" by BJP, Congress leader Vilas Mu t t e m w a r said on Wednesday. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the former Union Vilas Muttemwar Minister has said that in 1996, the BJP session held at Bhubaneshwar decided to consider the demands for creation of new independent states and it should take this demand to its logical end. "In 2000, when the NDA formed their government formed three new states viz Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand, but the claim of Vidarbha was completely ignored despite BJP's public commitment thereby betraying trust of the people of Vidarbha," he said in a letter. Muttemwar added that people from all walks of life and age groups have strongly batted for a separate Vidarbha state. "Independent plebiscites organised by social organisations recently in the four cities of Vidarbha- Nagpur, Amrvatai, Chandrapur and Yavatmal - have shown that 85 per cent to 97 per cent of voters favoured formation of a separate state of Vidarbha. "Majority of the political parties and their representatives from Parliament to panchayat samitis have supported the demand in a democratic and peaceful manner. Trade and industry associations, doctors, lawyers and people of all walks of life and especially the youth of the region have also supported the demand for restoration of statehood to Vidarbha," he added.

should not be used as an abuse

Actress Surveen Chawla, who has acted in several television shows, made her big-screen début last week with the erotic thriller, Hate Story 2, which is a sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit, Hate Story. In an exclusive chat with Rohit Pramar, she talks about her role, the film and feminism What made you accept this film? When I was initially offered the role, I was in two minds about accepting it. Usually, the perfect début would be a film with Alisters and known faces. But, I wanted to be more than just a supporting character in a multi-starrer and Hate Story 2 had the right role for me. Eventually, the script was the deciding factor. What has the experience been like while shooting for this film? It has been phenomenal. On my second day on set, I suffered from an injury, but it didn’t dampen my spirits. As a journey, it was a great learning experience, as it made me more confident about my abilities. I think of it as a bonus and will always cherish it. I read that you had a nervous breakdown while shooting some of the scenes. Is that true? It wasn’t really a nervous breakdown, but some of the scenes were slightly intense, which caused me a lot of emotional stress. As an actor, I think we are fortunate that we get to live so many lives through the various characters that we portray. In the film, the character goes through several phases, which made me feel for her. I felt disturbed as she was tortured brutally. In the film, the character goes through a lot before finally standing up for herself. If you could take one positive thing from her, what it would be? It would be the boldness of my character. My character becomes bold because she goes through a lot, until she decides to stand up for herself. But, people often have the wrong notion about the word. Being bold is an attitude; it is the will to stand up and fight for yourself. It is being courageous enough to defend yourself and unmask wrongdoers. I think it is something that every woman needs to be.

limits. Who decides those limits? They are even told how to dress and behave. While shooting for the film, I realised how women deal with absolutely anything and everything. Women aren’t objects. We often say don’t do this ‘like a girl’ or don’t drive ‘like a woman.’ ‘Like a girl’ shouldn’t be used as an abuse. Being a woman isn’t a disgrace. Every woman should stand up for herself. If need be, there is law and order to turn to, so never be afraid to use it. What are three things that every woman needs? 1. Self-esteem is the most important thing. Women need to stop taking abuse. 2. Be inter-independent. You can’t be too independent. You will still need to rely on the opposite sex. Being balanced is always good. 3. Be bold. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. How was it working with Jay Bhanushali? It was great fun. I have known him since my television days. We did a few shows together, so we already had a good working equation. Had it been someone else, we would have had to work on that. So, it was much easier for both of us. How do you keep fit and stay energised? Being happy helps me stay energised. Whenever I am stressed, I like to think of happy things. I don’t go to the gym because I hate exercising and I hate cardio. Whenever I have the time, I like to play volleyball, badminton or squash. I do pranayam and try to eat healthily, so that I don’t have to watch my weight either.

What’s next in store for you? After this, I have Ugly releasing. The film has travelled to many festivals in the last one year and it has been much appreciated, so I’m very excited for it’s release. After that, I have Leena Yadav’s film, titled Parched. It is about four women from Gujarat who are Do you believe that women in India need to stand up sexually oppressed. I am also looking forward to reading a few more scripts and finalising on some films. I am really glad that I for themselves? Absolutely. I think every woman needs to respect herself. I may am getting to play such powerful roles on screen. I’ve learnt a lot sound like a feminist, but women are conditioned and often given from my roles.

« celeb hit or miss: rhea dhanbhoora takes a look at what our leading ladies wore this week « « eLLi avraM

Elli’s outfit is pretty and her earrings go very well with it. She looks pretty, but we have a slight problem with her too-red cheeks! A lighter hand with the blush would have made her look much prettier.

Tara’s white gown is gorgeous and fits her like a glove, but we hate the shoulder drape. Her hair is pulled back a little too tightly too. Her accessories and well-applied makeup are right on the money though.

Apart from your skin, your hair can take a severe beating at the hands of increased humidity. Shirley Mistry tells you how to take care of your hair and gives you quick tips to rescue it when you can’t avoid the rain

the baSicS

simple fixes that will tame your hair in under five minutes.

Good hair-care habits prevent weather-worn hair, especially during monsoon. So, read our tips to ensure that your hair stays healthy.

FiNDiNG a ShaMPOO Given the humidity in the air, you may think that your hair won’t get dry and malnourished during monsoon, but you couldn’t be further away from the truth. The rain can dry your hair out, add frizz and cause breakage. So, break out your deep conditioning shampoo and conditioner. The added nourishment will help restore your hair’s balance and tame frizz and rough ends that are caused by the use of straighteners and curlers.

argan oil: Argan oil or Moroccan oil, is a blend of lightweight nourishing oils that tame frizz instantly. Decant a small quantity into a travel-sized bottle and keep it in your hand bag. Run a few drops through damp or dry hair to calm the frizz and make your hair look presentable. when at work: The easiest thing to do when you reach work with damp or wet hair, is to use a thick wad of tissues to get as much water out of your hair as you can. Let your hair dry completely and then apply some dry shampoo to avoid limp hair and restore volume. Keep hair ties handy, and pull your hair back into a chic bun. It is extremely forgiving and can cover up the worst hair.

SerUM ShiNe

Out and about: If you are headed out for lunch or dinner and are worried about your damp hair turning into a ball of frizz, always keep a hand cream or lotion handy. Rub a small amount into your palms, apply it to small sections of hair, curling each section with your finger tips. Once your hair dries, you will have beautiful tousled curls, without any signs of frizz. However, remember to use just a very small amount, or you will end up with greasy hair, instead of shiny and healthy hair.

If the rain is making your hair dull and brittle, invest in a good serum. Not only is it lightweight, it will also add a boost of nourishment to your hair, tame flyaways, add shine and keep the frizz at bay, all without making your hair heavy and greasy. While they may be expensive, a little goes a long way, so be sure to include a serum in your hair care routine.

cLariFy Even though your hair is dry, the roots tend to get greasy quicker during monsoon. This is because the build-up of dust, dirt and hair products is higher, due to the high moisture content in the air outdoors. A simple way to deal with this is to use a clarifying shampoo, once a week, or once every two weeks. These shampoos are stronger, give your hair a deeper cleanse and remove traces of oil and product build-up in a single wash, reducing hair fall that is caused by greasy roots.

hair bands: It is usually the roots that get greasy, so keep head bands and head wraps handy. After running an oil, serum or lotion through your hair, slick it back with a hair band. Not only will this look chic and extremely cute, the hair band helps take the attention away from the actual problem at hand and so, makes for an easy way to cover up greasy roots.

iN a FiX?

the side braid: Side braids are another way to fix damp, unruly hair. Simply sweep all your hair to once side and braid it — the messier, the better. A great way to hide damp hair, this hairstyle takes minutes to do and is work appropriate too.

If you get caught in the rain while you are headed to work or for an outing, chances are, you are going to be unable to save your hair, which means that it will look like a veritable disaster. So, here are some

>> Avoid driving through waterlogged areas on the road, as they might be concealing a pothole

« top 5: Ways to save Water

Since catchment areas have not been receiving enough rainfall this year, the civic body has imposed water cuts in several areas of the city. Dev Goswami helps you tide over the period with these tips

1. cut out showers Yes, we know that showers are a quick and easy way to have a bath, but they also waste a lot of water. Depending on the type of shower you have, you might be using anywhere between 10-20 litres of water per minute! Switch to bucket baths to save water — a typical bucket holds around 8-10 litres of water, which is more than enough for one person.

DRIVE SAFE With badly maintained highways, unlawful drivers and unruly pedestrians swarming the streets, driving in the city can prove to be a tough task. Add torrential rain, slippery roads and potholes to the equation and it’s a recipe for disaster. So, Dev Goswami brings you tips that will help you drive well and stay safe during monsoon

L

ong monsoon drives have a romantic charm associated with them. But, unless you are a skilled and cautious driver, a torrential downpour can cause car trouble, leave you stranded or, in an even worse scenario, in the middle of an accident. So, we speak to Farhat Gupta, head of training solutions, certifications & alliances for Motor Education and Training Association (META; www.metaworld.in), an organisation that was founded with the aim of making the roads safer. She gives us simple tips and a few precautions to ensure that your monsoon drive isn’t interrupted by not-so-romantic hurdles.

PrePare your car Whether you are planning on driving within the city or travelling for hours to visit a neighbouring town, it is essential that you get your car serviced before the monsoon. Get your tires, braces and wipers checked. You should change your wipers once every two years. The head, side and tail lights of your car are important features that people usually ignore. Service them so that they are in working condition, as you’ll need them to ensure that other drivers on the road can spot you from far away, especially when it’s raining heavily. Check the rubber lining of your doors and windows so that the water doesn’t seep in.

Drive Defensively Avoid driving on flooded roads, even if they are tempting shortcuts. If you drive to work every day, do a recce to identify notorious roads that are in bad condition, or have open manholes. Also, never drive through puddles at full speed. Not only is this bad civic behaviour (you might splash water on pedestrians), you also run the risk of hydroplaning. In Mumbai, you are also at the risk of driving into a pothole, as stagnant water might be hiding potholes and open manholes. Also, remember that your brakes aren’t going to work as well as they do when it’s not raining. So, drive at a slower speed, even if the road is empty, and make sure that you use dippers, headlights, tail lights and

turning indicators to give fellow drivers clear directions and have better control over your car.

Make a list of eMergency contacts From a car service helpline number, to friends and family who can come to your rescue, make sure that you have a list of numbers written down on a sheet of paper. Yes, written down, since storing them on your phone is risky. You may not have a number to call if the battery runs out. If you write the numbers down, you can look for a public telephone and ensure that you don’t get stranded.

2. Move your Plants outDoors Watering your plants can use up a lot of water, so for the duration of the BMC imposed water cut, move your plants to a location where they will get watered naturally. A balcony or a window sill is a good place for the rain to reach your plants. If your home lacks space, move them to the building compound. 3. think before you wash When it comes to washing clothes, remember that your washing machine will use the same amount of water (for a particular load setting), regardless of the number of clothes that you are washing. With this in mind, wait till you have enough unwashed clothes for a full-load and then wash them in the machine. This will reduce the amount of water that your machine uses. If you’d like to save more water, wash clothes by hand instead of using the machine. 4. store water If you are one of the few unlucky people in the city without a water tank in your house, you should either get one installed soon, or start storing water in big buckets. This will help ensure that you have enough water to last for a few hours when a water-cut is imposed in your area. Also, a water tank will be extremely useful if the water-cut is extended in the future.

Dos l Carry a GPS enabled phone (installing a GPS system in your car is safer, as you’ll avoid the risk of your phone running out of battery), an umbrella, a torch, first aid supplies, a clean cloth to wipe the windshield and a car charger for your phone. l Carry enough cash in your wallet. ATMs can be hard to find the minute that you really need them. Also, remember that if you have trouble when you’re driving, roadside mechanics will be your only option, and they won’t accept cards. l If you are stranded on a deserted road, roll up your windows, lock your doors and stay inside till a friend or family member comes to your rescue. At the same time, remember that rolling your windows all the way up and turning on the AC is extremely dangerous — you can die from carbon monoxide poisoning. So, leave a small crack at the top of your window open, to ensure air circulation. Don’ts l Don’t drive on the extreme left, or right hand side of the road. Roads are constructed so that they’re the highest in the middle, which means that the sides will often be more flooded. l Don’t drive through running water and waterlogged lanes. l Avoid wearing high heels and light coloured, tight clothes. If you get drenched, or have to walk for a while, it will be uncomfortable to do so. l Avoid driving when you feel drowsy or unwell. l Don’t pick up hitch-hikers when you’re driving alone. You might pity a pedestrian who is stuck in the rain, but you will not be able to distinguish between people in need and anti-social elements.

5. sMall things Apart from the tips above, there are several small ways to save water. Turn off your tap while brushing your teeth and for the two to three minutes that you’re massaging your face with a face wash. While shaving, fill a mug with water to rinse the razor in, instead of doing so under running water. While doing the dishes, soap all of them together (with the tap off) instead of soaping and rinsing one dish at a time, with the water running throughout.

« SoS: Solve our Situation! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I have this friend in college — she is not my best friend or even a very close friend — but I like her and we attend the same classes, so we end up spending time together She is really nice, sometimes, a little too nice. And you would not think that would be a problem, right? WRONG!

Do you get irritated with your boyfriend when he doesn’t understand your subtle hints? It’s probably because he’s getting a completely different message, says Dev Goswami

M

iscommunication is always tough when you’re in a relationship and it can lead to fights and resentment. But, before wondering how it’s possible that your boyfriend seems to understand innuendo and double-meaning, but completely fails to grasp that you’re not actually fine when you say you are, this article is for you. Read on as we tell you about what he actually understands from your subtle hints.

“I’m fIne” Let’s start off with the line that causes the most confusion. Whether it’s because you’re too upset to talk about what’s bothering you (to all the guys slyly reading this article — yes, that happens), or don’t want to share your troubles at that particular moment, the bottom-line is that you’re far from fine. However, your boyfriend cannot read your mind and so, when you say you’re fine, he’s going to take it as literally as he can and leave it at that. He could press you for a while, because as dumb as you think he is, he knows deep down that something is not right. But, it will only cause confusion in the long run, so try to be as straight as you can, or simply tell him that you don’t want to talk about it right now!

emotIons over text messages How is he supposed to know how you’re feeling when he can’t judge it by your expression or even by your tone of voice? Some guys are bad enough at deciphering your mood in person, so you can’t expect him to realise that when you use periods, you’re upset with him or that a certain number of exclamation marks means that you’re annoyed. Even emoticons won’t help. If you tell him not to come and see you if it isn’t worth it — don’t be upset if he doesn’t! The moral here is to tell him directly, because subtle hints and subtext can be seriously misinterpreted.

For example, the other day after class we were chatting, when... Bhoomi, the college’s Veronica Lodge, came up, plonked her hand on my shoulder and chatted with her for a few minutes.

“I don’t care. It’s up to you.” To you, this means that you do care and it’s definitely not up to him. To him, it literally translates to “Alright, go do what you want.” While he may intentionally be misinterpreting it to give himself a free pass to do what he wants, you’d be better off telling him what you actually want.

“K.” If you’ve ever sent a monosyllabic text message and gotten no response, don’t assume he knows that you’re expecting one. There isn’t much he can say back to this and unless he’s known you for years (although we would still forgive him for not understanding this one) he isn’t going to realise that “k” means that you’re angry with him. The next time you want to show him how annoyed you are, try not responding to his texts at all — it’s a hint he will understand a little easier.

“We’ll see” After she walked off, I only said...

Come on girls, why do you want to raise his hopes, when you know that you’re only going to shoot them down? The sentence “We will see” never means yes and whether you or your guy are guilty of uttering it, it’s not a good practice. And no, you can’t expect him to get it.

You’d think that someone with that kind of cash would spend a little on a good deo for her stinky armpits!

She looked at me angrily, turned and walked away... Then shot back at me..

>> To help him understand what your sentences actually mean, try to be a little more specific.

The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, dressed up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!

You should not gossip. It is so ugly!

Leaving me feeling like a bad person

« Dear grace, i have a problem... dear grace,

My friend and I have been close for around three years and we’ve shared a comfortable, platonic relationship. However, I have started getting mixed signals from him. He recently got out of a serious relationship and within a month, he began to flirt with me! Whether it’s a rebound or he is genuinely attracted to me, I don’t feel the same way about him. I don’t want to lose the friendship we share or hurt

his feelings by telling him the truth. What should I do? Please help! — tarini Bhatt, goregaon (e) dear tarini, It does seem like your close friend is looking for a rebound relationship. Since he has just ended a serious relationship, he is in a vulnerable position. Because the two of you are so close, he is bound to get drawn towards you. You should tell him the truth, because he needs a little reality

check. Don’t worry about it affecting your friendship, because if you really are that close and he understands where you’re coming from, he will appreciate it more than if you lead him on. Also, there is a possibility that you might be misinterpreting his vulnerability for flirting. By telling him the truth, you will clear up any misunderstandings.

"I did not think it was gossiping, as Bhoomi does stink! And R is just a goody-twoshoes-holier-than-thou-sitting-on-a-very-high-horse-high-attitude-judgemental COW! — Tulika K a) You’re doing it again! Time for a little self-evaluation. b) You are what you are. As long as it is not malicious or hurtful, a little gossiping is okay, if you are okay with being labelled a gossip. c) Sometimes, something said harmlessly in passing gets back to the person being talked about and it can really hurt them. It sounds like R might have been on the receiving end of gossip. But, to be fair, she sounds quite judgemental herself. Just avoid gossiping! Nifty At All Time High…

NSE India: S&P CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (July 24, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (July 23, 2014) a net 27.90 points (0.36%) and closed at the 7795 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 7794 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 7809 points level at 10.01 a.m. The index then declined into the red and registered the day’s low at the 7752 points level at 1.46 p.m. It then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 56 points and closed just below the psychologically important 7800 points level. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 22 were gainers, 27 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was witnessed in IT and technology stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 6.12%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 599 were gainers, 965 were losers and 49 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7471 points level. The next support is at the 7321 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 7896 points level. The next resistance is at the 7954 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7786 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7763. Support (2) = 7730. Resistance (1) = 7819. Resistance (2) = 7842. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

attention to how the wealth was created. Of the UHNIs, 150 individuals and another 15-20 companies closely associated with the segment like those selling luxury brands and wealth managers, were interviewed to analyse how the wealth gets allocated to different uses like leisure, travel, investments and philanthropy. The interviews, done in March before the outcome of the general elections, pointed out to much optimism on the economic environment among the UHNIs. Balaraman said of the UHNIs, the professionals are hands-on with their contributions and generally come up with help beyond the donations to ensure the success of the aim, while those who have inherited the wealth stop only at making the contribution. In investments, there has been the emergence of a new asset class as UHNIs have started investing in private equity funds very sizeable. Over 26% of the surveyed UHNIs said they have private equity investments, with real estate and IT being the key focus sectors, while e-commerce and pharma catching up.

Umera Ahmed tells all about female-dominated Pakistani television

Ishita Ganguly is the latest star on the TV firmament with her show ‘Shastri Sisters’ which began on Colors from July 21, Monday to Saturday, at 7 pm. Sandeep Hattangadi caught up with the gentle woman about her new show

'Zindagi...', an adaptation of the Umera's novel of the same name, was directed by Sultana Is it similar to your real life Siddiqui, who is also the president of television channel Hum. The show was produced by character? Momina Duraid, who has helmed many dramas in the past. “Our image is shown of as a Yes. Very much so. I am very much like regressive country which does not treat its women well. But we have so many women artistes Anushka in real life. here. In fact most of the television writers are women,” Umera added. She is hopeful that the Pakistani dramas being aired on Indian channel Zindagi will help dispel misconceptions What is the storyline of the show? about the country. “A feeling of alienation existed in India about life in Pakistan, because 'Shastri Sisters' is a concept tracing the journey of four most of what was known was negative. So everyone used to believe things in our sisters who find themselves uprooted from their family home country were always bad and we don't lead a happy life. “But this has changed to in Kanpur to move to New Delhi. TV TATTLE Star cameo

Mahabhasma Pari rises

'Baal Veer' takes the audience on an adventurous trip to Parilok. 'Baal Veer' is the saviour of Parilok and children, protecting them from the evil intentions of Bhayankar Pari. Now the champion is all set to go against another powerful entityMahabhasma Pari. Shweta Tiwari is all set to capture the audience’s attention as Mahabhasma Pari, who will rise to destroy the world with the help of her evil powers. She said, “This is the first time that I will be seen in a negative role. I like to experiment with different roles and the character of Mahabhasma Pari seemed interesting.”

Star guest Parineeti

Promoting her upcoming movie, 'Dawaat-e-Ishq' on Zee TV’s Eid special Dawaat-E-Eid, Parineeti Chopra seemed to have a blast! While she was on the sets with the man she will be seen romancing in the movie, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Parineeti seemed to have found a new friend in the 'Qubool Hai' male lead Karanvir Bohra. Performing a number together on a song from their movie, the two seemed to hit it off right from the rehearsals. Karanvir said, “When I first met her, I was glad to have met a girl who has an amazing sense of humour.”

Star Plus's 'Ek Hasina Thi' which has always managed to keep the suspense quotient high will see another major twist in the coming episodes. Television actor Aamir Ali will be seen entering the show in a cameo role. With Aamir's entry the plot will get a new dimension with the drama taking a new turn. A source says, “Aamir will start shooting soon. He will be doing a cameo and Aamir and Sanjeeda have a few scenes together. Their characters will pretend to get engaged on the show.”

Viraf's new hairdo

What was the shoot like? It was great fun. We four girls would bring our lunch together and share it, and generally freak out.

Talk to me about the supporting cast of 'Shastri Sisters'? With a fresh cast and relatable characters, 'Shastri Sisters' includes strong actors portraying pivotal characters such as the simpleton father, Narayan Shastri (Rajesh Jais) who works for the government and the do-gooder Delhi-based landlord Mr Sareen (Girish Sehdev), popularly known as ‘Lalaji’ in the moholla who loves his daily dose of whiskey. Minty Sareen (Neelu Kohli) is the snobbish and stubborn wife of the landlord, the gossip queen of the neighbourhood and the proud mother of two sons Rajat (Vijayendra Kumeria) and Neel (Sumit Bhardwaj).

Where was the show shot? It was shot extensively across New Delhi – Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Pahad Ganj to bring alive the storyline while building authenticity for the show. Are you interested in films? Yes. Why not? I would like to work with directors like AnuragBasu, Pradeep Sarkar, and Shoojit Sarkar.

With actors constantly experimenting with their looks to portray their reel life characters, it has been a series of look changes for Viraf What is your parent’s Patel, the main lead on Life OK’s 'Ek Boondh reaction to your success? Ishq'. His current look, the Zappa, is getting a They are very happy for me and thumbs up from his female fans! Karan Kundra wants to take on Varun, Sidharth ‘K

itni Mohabbat Hai’ star Karan Kundra is now worried about being compared to other TV actors entering Bollywood and rather aims to compete with Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Karan (29) who made his Bollywood debut with Vikram Bhat's 'Horror Story', feels there is no contest between him and his contemporaries on TV. “I don't feel any competition with TV actors because I am already at par with them. In fact, I want to make myself able enough to compete with the Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra in the industry. That's my aim,” Karan told PTI.

The small screen has seen many of its popular faces like Sushant Singh Rajput, Jay Bhanushali and Sidharth Shukla transitioning to Bollywood in recent times. Karan, however, says he will continue to juggle between the two mediums. The actor, who was last seen on TV in reality show 'Gumraah', is returning to fiction with a love story 'Fannah', where he plays the

role of a vampire. He will also be seen in 'Dil Phire'. “This is a cool show and the role is very real. The time is of real characters, no one wants to watch nice and good people. My role has negative shades and is more relatable,” he said. The MTV show is a finite series of six months and might have more seasons if the first one works. The actor, who is currently shooting for a Punjabi film, finds the concept of fixed duration shows great and thinks daily soaps are not cool anymore.

The remaining amount was spent by the other two franchises - Goa and North East United FC - who had finalised their domestic players before today's draft and announced them over the last two days. Judokas seek glory in Glasgow Commonwealth Games G

LASGOW: With judo coming back into the Commonwealth Games fold after 12 years, Indian judokas looked a confident lot as they begin their campaign here tomorrow, aiming to produce the best-ever performance by the country in the

quadrennial event. This is the third time that judo has been in Commonwealth Games after 1990 in Auckland and 2002 in Manchester and India had won two medals each in both the editions. The current India team, comprising seven men and seven women, expressed confidence of winning four to five medals this time. Women's

coach Virender Singh said that the 14member Indian team had a good preparation ahead of the Games with a training-cum-exposure tour to Tashkent and then Hungary for more than 20 days in May-June. He said India should win four to five medals. "We had a very good training-cumexposure trip to Tashkent which was

for 15 days. Then the team was sent to Hungary to take part in a Grand Prix event. The exposure will be very useful for the players and overall we hope to win four to five medals," Virender, himself a Commonwealth Games medal winner, told PTI. "In 1990 India won two bronze and then a silver and a bronze in Man-

chester. Now, we are aiming for at least four medals. If that happens, that will be the best-ever performance in Commonwealth Games by India," men's coach Rameshwar Dutt Mudgil said. "Out of the five judokas who will fight tomorrow, we are expecting to win three medals," he added. Vishwanath Salian | ADC

The Dhunjibhoy family will, as always, also sponsor the Sprint Million on the same day, as an added bonus. The Derbyweekend will also feature the hugely popular Oktoberfest, for the fifith year running, thanks to the munificence of the Indo German Chamber and its associates, and is as big a draw as the Derby itself. The Indian St. Leger returned to its rightful place at Pune three years back, which has been its traditional home. Permanently shifted back to Pune, this last of the Indian Classics gives the season an added dimension and is sponsored by RWITC’s biggest contributor, The UB Group with Rs.2.1 million in added money and would be run on the last Sunday of September.

The Racing Programme The season will as always feature a number of Millions and Graded races for each age category, the highest for any monsoon season in India. As may as 20 races(including The Pune Derby and Indian St.Leger) will carry a minimum prize money of Rs.1 million which is commendable for a short season. And, Pune once again gets the privilege to play host to the first two year old Million race in the country for the new crop. The minimum prize money for Grade 3 races has been enhanced to Rs. 1.5 million and for Grade 2 to Rs. 2 million, in line with the recommendation of the Turf Authorities of India (TAI). Hence the bigger races get a boost.

Indian hockey eves eye win against Canada in CWG opener

GLASGOW: With eyes firmly set on a podium finish, Indian women's hockey team would look to make a positive start against a lowly Canada in its opening pool match of the Commonwealth Games. Going by their present form, the Indian eves have a fair chance of progressing to the semifinals of the quadrennial event as apart from Canada they are placed alongside 2010 Delhi Games silver medallist New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa in Pool A. Apart from New Zealand, who are ranked fourth in the world, South Africa (11th) is the other higher placed team in India's (13th) pool, but the gap between the Indians and the South Africans are minimal. A winning start against Canada will act as a confidence booster for the Indian eves as they take on New Zealand in their next match on July 27, followed by games against Trinidad and Tobago (July 28) and South Africa (July 30). Against the 22nd ranked Canada tomorrow, the Indians will definitely start as overwhelming favourites as in their last clash in 2012, it was the latter who came out victorious with 4-0 margin.

LASGOW: Despite star shuttler Saina Nehwal's lastminute pull-out, India will look to maintain their impressive run when they begin their campaign with a clash against minnows Ghana in the mixed team event of the 20th Commonwealth Games here today. India had won two gold, one silver and one bronze in 2010 and this time again they would look to repeat their performance even though they suffered a jolt with the late withdrawal of Saina due to injury. P Kashyap and P V Sindhu are expected to be among medals in men's and women's singles repectively while the women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa would be raring to go to defend the gold they won in 2010. The Indian team has been considerably weakened due to the absence of Saina but it will still be in the reckoning for a medal in the combined mixed team event. team event at the Emirates Arena and India has been placed in Pool B along with Ghana, Kenya and Uganda and it should not be a problem to top the group and make it to the knock-out round. The Indian team is raring to go and they have left behind the disappointment of Saina's pulling out. "The players are upbeat, they are training well and ready. We hope to do very well and maintain our level," team manager Tej Pal Singh Puri said. About today's match against Ghana and Kenya, Puri said, "We should be able to top our group and make it to the quarterfinals." The group winner of the six pools and the two best runners-up teams will make it to the quarterfinals. "We won silver last time but we cannot say anything now about our performance in the knock-out phase. There will be a draw after the preliminary rounds and we will know who plays whom in the knock-out phase," he added. India has a strong chance to win at least a medal in the men's singles after the pulling out of world number one Lee Chong Wei.

A lot is dependent on the world number 10 and medal hopeful Dipika Pallikal.

Medal-less India can turn it around G LASGOW: The six-member Indian squash team, led by Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal, begins its Commonwealth Games campaign with the singles competition here today, well aware that it has a good chance of winning its first ever medal in the quadrennial event. Though India's best bet for a medal is in the doubles and mixed doubles, World No. 16 Ghosal and 10th-ranked Pallikal are capable of springing a surprise in the individual category. Ghosal, seeded fourth, takes on little-known Jules Snagg of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in his opener at the Scotstoun Sports Campus. The Indian is drawn to meet eigth seeded Malaysian Ong Beng

Hee in the quarterfinals and England's second seed James Willstrop in the semifinals. The other Englishmen dominating the draw are top seed Nick Matthew and third seed Peter Barker. "The draw looks fine. I am focussing on getting through one match at a time," Ghosal told PTI. On his first match, he said: "I have not seen him play before as he is not on the professional tour. Hopefully I will play well and win. Later in the evening, I could end up playing Paul Coll from New Zealand." Harinder Pal Sandhu and Mahesh Mangaonkar are the other Indians in the men's singles draw. Sandhu takes on Northern Ireland's Michael Craig and Mangaokar meets Kenyan Hardeep Reel.
