Gujarat on alert as ‘Nilofar’ intensifies A

The work order for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project ‘Statue of Unity’ — the world’s tallest statue of the first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was issued by the Gujarat government on Monday, to leading engineering company Larsen and Toubro (L&T). Work on the 182-metre tall statue of Sardar Patel is to be completed at a cost of Rs 2,979 crore, said Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel who presided over the function of handing over the work order in Gandhinagar, yesterday. "This huge construction work will be completed in four years at a cost of Rs.2,979 crore," Patel said.

HMEDABAD: The cyclonic storm 'Nilofar', which originated in the Arabian Sea, has now intensified and is likely to make a landfall on October 31 near Naliya village in Kutch district, the Meteorological Department said yesterday. 'Nilofar' has intensified into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' and is expected to bring heavy rains in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch accompanied by high speed wind. Officials said Gujarat administration is bracing to meet any challenge arising out of the cyclone. "The severe cyclonic storm 'Nilofar' lying over west- central Arabian Sea has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. "It is currently positioned in west-central Arabian Sea, about 1170km south-west of Naliya village, 1230 km

south- southwest of Kutch and 880km east-southeast of Oman," the Department told PTI. "It would initially move north-northwestwards during the next 24 hours and then recurve northwestwards and cross Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast around Naliya by Friday morning. "However as the system would come closer to Gujarat coast, it would weaken and cross the coast as severe cyclonic storm," it added. Looking at the situation, the Met has told authorities to hoist distant warning signal No 2 on all ports. "Due to the cyclone, we are expecting bad weather on 30th and 31st of October. There will be heavy rains in coastal region of Saurashtra and Kutch on these days. Sea will be rough to very rough. Thus, we have issued cyclone

alert to the State Government," said Manorama Mohanty, Director, Ahmedabad Meteorological Centre. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Anandi Patel has asked the state administration to be prepared for any eventuality in the wake of 'Nilofar' and take precautionary steps. She said the Kutch region is likely to be severely hit by the cyclone. "The cyclone will affect Kutch the most, especially Naliya. There will be heavy rains and gushing winds. We are expecting more damage in and around Naliya," said Patel in an advisory to the administration. The Chief Minister has asked authorities in all the coastal districts to remain alert and keep control rooms open. Further, she has asked respective authorities not to grant leave to any officer or employee.

SC says it will not be averse to any decision taken by the new state govt regarding the fate of the illegal flats

By Philip Varghese

Residents pin hopes on the new government...

I

n what can be termed as a glimmer of hope for the beleaguered residents of Campa Cola society in Worli where the fate of over 100 illegal flats hangs in the balance, the Supreme Court on Monday said that it would not be averse to any relief that the new government in Maharashtra may offer the residents. This comes as the residents' lawyer advocate Kamini Jaiswal sought an adjournment when the matter regarding their plea for a clarification of the earlier apex court order came up in court for a hearing. She sought an adjournment since their senior counsel Shanti Bhushan was unable to make it to the court on Monday. The SC had last year upheld the demolition notice issued by the BMC years ago to the society. The residents sought a clarification on the possible actions that the BMC could take and said regularisation is a possibility especially since the civic body itself had earlier agreed to it and had even accepted most of the regularisation fee. But at the last hearing in September, the BMC

told the Supreme Court that it may not be possible to regularise Campa Cola Compound buildings. The apex court had thus given Campa Cola residents two weeks' time to file a reply to the written reply which the BMC had submitted. While hearing the matter on Monday, the SC bench comprising of Justice S J Mukhopadhaya and Justice Sharad Bobde said if the new government which is yet to be formed in Maharashtra offers any relief to Campa Cola residents, it would not be averse to any such relief. Jaiswal clarified that the residents were not seeking an adjournment because they were waiting for the new government formation.

As the new government will be formed on Saturday, the residents in the Camp Cola compuond said, “We have tried all sorts of ways to find a solution for ourselves and as we wanted the Modi wave to be sworn during the Lok Sabha elections as well the Assembly elections and all the party leaders representing the Bharatiya Janta Party have always been very supportive with us during the fight. Whatever may be the case, we respect the Supreme Court decision.” Nevertheless, it is indeed true that the residents may still rely on the new BJP government for relief.

n what could be a first-of-its-kind step in South Mumbai, Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre (JHRC) has set up a rapid action force for handling cases of stroke in order to minimise time loss in starting treatment for the patient after he or she reaches hospital. Called 'Code Stroke', this initiative aims at bringing together all the concerned departments involved in handling cases of stroke at the same time and taking the needful steps for the patient, simultaneously. Speaking about this initiative, Dr Tarang Gianchandani, Chief Executive Officer, JHRC, said, “Though every hospital does have the expertise and system to deal with cases of stroke, it is not streamlined. A department is activated after the work of the previous department is complete. Also, the urgency to look at such cases on a priority basis was not felt. And that led to loss of precious time of the golden hour which is three and a half to four hours, in case of a stroke. And once, two and half hours are gone after the attack, the chances of help-

ing the patient get diminished. The brain damage that has already happened can't be reversed and rehabilitation, which drains the patient and the family not only physically and emotionally but also financially, is the only option left. To make sure that the required medical assistance is provided without wasting any time, Jaslok has structured the protocol to be followed for stroke cases and have formed a rapid action force, which when activated, will leave all the jobs at hand and reach the patient in the hospital within a few minutes and start doing the needful.” This team will comprise specialists from the departments of neurology, intensive care, neurosurgery, neuro-radiology, pathology and anaesthsiology who will evaluate, investigate and start the therapy of the patient with acute stroke with minimum delays. “The principle here is time is brain and time lost is brain lost. This programme will go a long way in saving lives and saving people from being disabled because of stroke,” said Dr S M Katrak, Director, Department of Neurology, JHRC.

fter the death of third year resident doctor at BMC-run KEM Hospital Shruti Khobragade on Sunday due to dengue, a team of inspectors from the insecticide department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation inspected the premises of the hospital and hostel on Monday and found two breeding spots brimming with the larvae of the aedes mosquito which causes dengue. ON Monday, the personal assistant of a well known city leader complained to the insecticide department of the BMC about dengue spreading in his neighbourhood. A team was immediately dispatched to identify breeding spots in and around that area. A breeding spot was found in the house of the complainant himself. An officer from the insecticide department said, “When we checked the house, we found that he had kept a coconut in a vessel filled with water, which became the breeding spot for mosquitoes. The neighbour who the personal assistant said was suffering from dengue also had a breeding spot in his house in a plate kept under a plant pot.”

“One was on the eleventh floor of the hostel where there was half cup of water in the drainage filter in the common toilet filled with aedes larvae. The other spot was found on the seventeenth floor in the bathroom of women doctors' common room. There was a plastic bucket with water where breeding was happening,” said Dr Rajan Naringrekar, chief insecticide officer of the BMC.

Death by Dengue

Dr Khobragade who succumbed to dengue on Sunday evening is the sixth victim of this virus. She was admitted to KEM Hospital on October 21 after she started exhibiting symptoms and was shifted to Hinduja Hospital on October 25. On being asked about the reason for the shift in hospitals, Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC epidemiologist, said, “It was apparently the relatives' call to take her to Hinduja.” Talks about her deteriorating condition being the reason for the change in hospital were afloat at KEM Hospital. At the time of going to press the BMC was yet to get an official notification and details about the death from Hinduja. “We have asked Hinduja to give us details. They said the paperwork will take time. We are still waiting for notification from them,” said Dr Gomare. Nobody from Hinduja Hospital was available for further details on this death. The team had found few breeding spots in drums and scraps in the hostel on October 17, said Dr Naringrekar. The BMC has time and again insisted that dengue cannot be controlled unless people also take the responsibility to keep their homes and localities free from stagnant water. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Poisonous gases were spread over many cities when the “traditional fireworks” were burst.

Fireworks – a traditional exercise?

GM apple that fizzes like soda

Scientists have created the world's first 'sparkling' apple that fizzes in the mouth when eaten. When the apple is bitten into, the cells in the flesh of the fruit release tongue-tingling juices akin to

having a mouthful of a fizzy drink. One of the two varieties used to breed the new apple is called Resi — an East German specimen known for its sweet texture. Swiss firm Lubera mixed Resi with the variety Pirouette to create the new apple called Paradis Sparkling. The new breed took years to perfect by trial and error genetic modification, it has been reported. "It has a soft texture but a heavy crunch and very big cells that open up in the mouth, releasing a lot of acidity and sugar that gives you a feeling of having a fizzy drink," said Robert Maierhofer, production manager at Lubera. Maierhofer said the breeding process involved repeatedly selecting the richest apples produced from a tree to crossbreed with. The sapling trees are now on sale for 34 pounds.

Harmony for humanity

The Daniel Pearl Foundation launched its 13th annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days throughout October. Like every year, people at The Local (formerly Soul Fry Casa, opposite Mumbai University, Kala Ghoda) have once again been requested by the foundation to be a part of this inspirational initiative that demonstrates the power of music to bridge cultural differences and instill in its audiences a sense of purpose and unity around the theme of ‘Harmony for Humanity.’ In the past years, thousands of artists from around the world have taken part in this global symphony. Daniel Pearl was a seeker of truth who used his pen and violin to foster tolerance, bridge cultural divides and spread friendship wherever he travelled. While we were busy celebrating Diwali, there was an interesting debate going on across various social networking sites. While many environmentconscious heads were putting up messages about celebrating a crackers-less and pollution-less Diwali, other tradition-upholders were seen posting pictures of the immense pollution caused by factories and vehicles, questioning the anti-fire-cracker population. These people claimed that bursting crackers was a tradition and that children looked forward to 'enjoying' the festival by bursting some ear-splitting crackers. We should therefore not take away this 'joy' from them, they said, just for the sake of being environmentfriendly. While we do not deny that factories and vehicles, and why, a lot other things, harm the environment to a much larger extent, does it mean that it is okay to cause 'some' harm through these crackers? Our answer would be NO, certainly NOT! Little or huge, any harm to nature is not worth it.

At Marine Drive

For all tourists and lovers, Marine Drive is the landmark destination. Those who visit the city make a beeline to the place. There is no beach where one can swim and relax. There is the sea right there below where you sit on the parapet — hitting the huge boulders and tetrapods — put there to break their strong force. People come to Marine Drive for various reasons. They come to relax, to have some fresh air, just look at the enchanting seascape, do some exercise. They come also do some personal 'deals'. Romance is in the air along the Marine Lines. A good thing is the cop is very much present by his absence. If at all there are any, they are in plain clothes. A selfie which not only smells sweet of a romantic twosome at the Marine Drive.

umbai's crime branch on Sunday arrested three notorious robbers and thwarted their attempt to rob a businessman, who was carrying few lakhs of rupees with him. Sleuths from the Unit 12 department of crime branch arrested the accused, identified as Santosh Chavan, Vijay Gharat and Ananta Patole, from suburban Goregaon. According to Milind Khetle, senior inspector of Unit 12, “These three robbers had planned to rob a businessman, who was going to come near bus depot in Goregaon (E).” In this regard, the accused were equipped with a dagger, chopper and a revolver along with three live bullets, said DCP (Detection-1) Mohan Dahikar. “The accused had planned to take the businessman by surprise

by showing him the revolver and then quickly running away with the bag of money he was carrying,” added Khetle. Police have seized all the weapons, which the accused carried and the interrogation of the

Trio’s robbery history

1) In broad daylight on October 8 the accused trio looted a businessman in Ambernath area. 2) On October 9, the accused trio looted a jewellery shop in Padgha area of Thane and fled with gold worth more than Rs eight lakh. 3) In the third week of October, the accused trio committed a dacoity in Chennai district.

accused revealed that the trio were history sheeters who have several cases registered against them in different police stations of Mumbai, Thane and in the district of Chennai. The accused learnt about the businessman's money bag when they overheard him during a conversation with his friend, said police. Subsequently, the trio planned the robbery but their luck failed as a police informer from Thane city tipped the police about the accused trio, who would be arriving in the city. After getting an authentic tip about the robbers, sleuths from Unit 12 of crime branch laid a trap at suburban Goragoan and arrested the accused.

Sleepy cops ask residents to go and themselves conduct medical tests of nabbed thief

“W

hen the city goes to sleep, so does its police"- is this the reason behind the rising crime graph in the Vasai-Virar region? This was brought to the fore when on-duty police personnel from the local police station were found napping, even as alert and courageous residents caught hold of a thief who had sneaked into a locked apartment of their society in the Snehal Building of Nallasopara (E) during the pre-dawn hours of Monday. After hearing some noise from his neighbour's locked flat at about 3:30 am, Gyaneshwar Gaikwad tried to step out of his house but could not do sp as the miscreant had apparently latched the doors of all the flats on the floor from the outside. Gaikwad then raised an alarm following which other soci-

ety members gathered at the spot and after a valiant effort, managed to nab the thief who was holed up inside the apartment. After an unsuccessful telephonic attempt to inform the cops about the incident, the residents themselves escorted the thief to the Nallasopara police station, where they were stunned to find

the on-duty personnel having a blissful nap. However this was not the end of the ordeal as the residents received another rude shock when the cops expressed their inability of moving out of the police station and directed them to take the culprit to the government hospital for a medical check-up. It was only after the intervention of the local media personnel that the cops woke up from their slumber, took official custody of the accused and initiated formal proceedings into the matter. Expressing his inability to divulge any further details in the case, an on-duty personnel stationed at the Nallasopara police station said, “The accused thief is in our custody and further investigations are on.” Despite several attempts to contact him, Senior PI Ravindra Badguzar remained unavailable for comments.

The only way out is a merciless crackdown on drug peddlers,” he said. Another local, Bilal Sheikh, said most of the robberies and thefts in the area had been committed by drug addicts themselves. “Most of the open spaces become their dens after evening which the police know but they look the other way,” he said. Many decorators across the city haven't received payment for their work during the elections, owing to the defeat of some candidates By Zuber Ansari

O

ctober 19 did not only bring defeat and losses to some election candidates, but also to a few mandap decorators across the city who were hired to build stages and make other

arrangements for the candidates, as the decorators haven't yet received their money for the work done. The candidates who lost the Assembly elections haven't bothered paying the dues of the decorators. Many decorators in the city have been visiting the offices and residences of these candidates for their balance money. According to a decorator from Santacruz, he had done the work as per the requirements of the candidates, but most of the candidates have not paid him his money. “When asked, they say that they have lost the election and

there's no money,” he said. “We had borrowed money from some other people for the work during elections. We have to pay them too,” he added. Another decorator from Kurla said, “I had fixed a deal with a candidate at Rs 4.5 lakh. I had made a separate A/C room for him etc but unfortunately, he lost the election, and hasn't given me my money.” When the ADC contacted the concerned candidates, most of them said that their PAs were handling these matters. Some decorators are now planning to file a police complaint against the defaulting candidates.

Tree authority budget presented By A Staff Reporter

T

he tree authority budget for 2015-16 was presented on October 17 by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Improvements) before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Sitaram Kunte. However, a discussion on the budget did not take place as the election code of conduct was in force. It is expected to be discussed in the coming meeting. The members of the tree authority committee sought out data of the rain trees

killed and cured in the city. As per the data available, garden superintendent Hire said, “The survey conducted by in all seven wards reveal that the maximum rain trees were in Zone IV (Malad) – 180 out of which 130 trees were cured from a disease called dieback. In Zone III (Andheri, Bandra) – 54 out of 119 trees were cured.” Trees affected by dieback start drying up after an insect/pest called Mealybug attacks the tree. However, there were no rain trees found in e Zone I and the civic chief has asked for a detailed report with photographs of the survey. In all, there are 499 rain trees in the seven zones out of which 262 trees have been cured by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Zone

fter declaring unilateral support to the BJP for the formation of the government in the state, the NCP yesterday virtually cornered the Shiv Sena by stating that the party will abstain if the state Assembly votes to establish majority. NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that if the situation requires and there is voting in the Assembly, the NCP will abstain from it. “Numbers are such that we are compelled to do it, otherwise there will be no government in Maharashtra and within six months there will be elections again,” he said. After Pawar's statement, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik reiterated the stance while speaking to reporters. He said, “The NCP will abstain from voting in Assembly if a minority government headed by the BJP seeks trust vote. If the Shiv Sena joins the government, there will be no problem. We will not be part of the government but do not want to create instability by voting against a minority government. So NCP will abstain if there is voting.” “The NCP has decided to honour the people's mandate which is in favour of the BJP. The facts remain that the BJP is the single largest party”, he added.

Seven independents and five MLAs from smaller parties will support the BJP government during the floor test taking the total strength to 134, 10 short of the simple majority mark in the house of 288. There is one nominated member taking the total strength of the legislative Assembly to 289. Senior NCP leader Praful Patel immediately after the results had announced that his party would offer unconditional support to the BJP. Now Pawar has gone one step further to ensure the stability of the government. However, it is alleged that the offer for support is a clear-cut attempt to protect NCP leaders from the inquiries into financial irregularities that took place during the Congress-NCP government's regime.

FADNAVIS ALL SET TO BE CM? Continued from pg 1 « said that the BJP will go ahead and form a minority government irrespective of whether the Sena agrees to join the government or not.

Meanwhile, BJP sources did disclose that a meeting with BJP central observers – Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and party general secretary J.P. Nadda – could take place on the sidelines of the BJPLP

Return of the jinx

Apparently the jinx of 1999 and 2004 legislative assembly seems to have come back to haunt the newly elected 13th legislative assembly again in 2014. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is on the verge of forming the next government suffered a tragic blow when its newly elected MLA Govind Rathod from Mukhed assembly constituency in Nanded district succumbed to a massive heart attack while on his way to Mumbai last night. Rathod suffered the fatal heart attack while traveling in Devgiri Express enroute to Mumbai. He was on his way to attend the BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) meeting scheduled to be held on October 28. In the past, on two occasions, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has been witness to such tragic incidents. In October 1999, newly elected Congress MLA from Colaba, Marzban Patrawala died of a heart attack while on his way to take his oath as member of the legislative assembly. Again in October 2004, Congress MLA Govind Wanjari from Nagpur South assembly constituency succumbed to a heart attack before the new government could be sworn-in. Yesterday night, the BJP got the tragic news of its newly elected MLA Govind Rathod's demise due to a heart attack.

meeting. Speaking to ADC, Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar disclosed that the swearingin ceremony will take place at 4 pm at Wankhede Stadium on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on a four-stage podium. The main stage will be for the chief minister designate, the Governor. While one stage will be reserved for the Prime Minister and Union ministers, another one for the ministers who will take the oath along with the chief minister and the fourth will be for BJP chief ministers from other states. Another highlight planned is floating 25 fishing boats along the Marine Drive-Girgaum Chowpatty coast showing BJP Lotus symbol in full bloom. Sources disclosed that the cue has been taken from former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's remark that one day the lotus will bloom from the Arabian Sea side, an inference to BJP coming to power on its own in Maharashtra.

Sena has to accept harsh facts F

OR months before the Assembly polls, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had announced confidently he would be the next chief minister of Maharashtra. He was certain that the Congress party which had resorted to corruption on a huge scale would be decimated. The BJP, he thought, would continue to be a junior partner in the alliance. He wanted the BJP to be his ally — but only by playing secondary role in the government. That was the time when the Modi wave had begun to have a countywide impact. The success of the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections was spectacular. Shiv Sena as an ally of the BJP had benefitted a great deal. Some members of his party were included in the Modi government. Uddhav Thackeray, however, was not prepared to concede any credit to the BJP and thought that the elections in the state was a totally different happening. He would not give the BJP in the state equal status: He wanted the party to continue as a junior partner. Flushed with success and quite confident now, the BJP asked for equal share in seats for the Assembly polls. Uddhav would not give the BJP more than 119 seats. For his own party, he kept 151 seats. The split was inevitable. The BJP was a big success in the polls but it could not get the required majority. Then began a hectic bargaining between the two parties, with the result very soon they began moving away from each other. Evidently Uddhav Thackeray has not given up his dream of becoming the CM.

FTER the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, the Muslim community in India felt for the first time since Independence that they were a minority in the real sense. The Partition, on the basis of religion, did not cast a shadow on their future. But the liberal era of Jawaharlal Nehru and the Indian Constitution guaranteeing equality to all citizens saw the country through a period which otherwise could have been more violent and more divided than what the migration and bloodshed that took place on both sides on the basis of religion. One million people were estimated to have been killed. By declaring that the Ram Mandir would be built by 2019, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has rubbed salt into the wounds of Muslims. They have come to reconcile to the loss rather helplessly because they do not see any light at the end of the tunnel.

lims, have not been threatened except by a lunatic fringe. No doubt, the people would have secured more benefits in a leftist outfit. But the 25 years of Communists’ rule in West Bengal has given a fatal blow to the ideology because the government failed to give even basic education to its people. The educated Muslims were only 2.5 per cent even after the rule of Communists regime of two and a half decades. If the RSS is really interested in Hindutva, it should be agitating for the rights of Dalits who despite the discrimination it has faced has remained in the fold of Hinduism. True,

Jan Sangh leaders

Closed chapter WITH a small temple, which came up overnight on the site where the Babri Masjid stood once, the chapter had been closed for the time being at least. But that does not seem to satisfy the Muslims, nor is it in their interest, as they perceive. The BJP, guided by the RSS is trying to create the same atmosphere. The equivocal stand by the government on secularism has only helped the Hindutva elements. Prime Minister Narendra Modi could have done something positive to clear the vitiated atmosphere. But his party does not appear to do so because it’s paying dividends in keeping the society polarized. No outsider could interfere because the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh, did little to follow the Supreme Court’s judgment which said that the status quo should be maintained. By ‘Hinduising’ a secular society, the integrity of the country is in danger. Religion can never integrate a nation as the example of Bangladesh cutting itself asunder from Pakistan shows. The imposition of Urdu forced the same Islamic East Pakistan to become independent, Sovereign Republic of Bangladesh. India has stayed as one country because the various cultural entities have not been disturbed. True, the Hindus are 80 per cent of the population. But the minority, the Mus-

stories should not be used. Surely, this does not constitute the freedom of the press. The institutions in the country are languishing. Had the media, an important institution, been free, the RSS would not have dared to challenge the basic structure of the Constitution, which includes secularism. The RSS chief should realize that the core of Hinduism is a sense of accommodation and spirit of tolerance, not the division of society. The spread of the BJP is a point of concern because it still ignores the aspirations of Muslims. Modi’s slogan of development has gone down well because it gives hope of reducing, if not ousting, poverty. He has done well not to deviate from that path. Unfortunately, his regular contacts with the RSS and that of his Man Friday Amit Shah, effaces even the wishful thinking that Modi would build the society without any prejudice or bias.

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar some have sought freedom through conversions to other religions. But that have only adversely affected the Muslim and Christian societies. The converts from among the Dalits face more or less the same discrimination in the religious society they joined. The RSS chief, claiming to be cushioning the Hindus, did not react to the burning of a Dalit because his goat strayed into the land of an upper caste member. Now that Modi has caught the imagination of the country, he should take up the cause of the Dalits and ask the upper castes to shed discrimination against the Dalits. I have not seen even a mild criticism from Modi or his ardent followers, who claim that they would build a future India which will know no discrepancy. At least the burning of Dalits, if not the daily prejudice, should have been covered by the widely-watched Doordarshan network. But it seems that the government itself doesn’t want to raise the pitch on this issue because it is dominated by the upper castes. Even otherwise, there seems to be an unwritten law which dictates that such

THINGS would have been different if the demand by some liberal BJP men to sever all connections with the RSS had been implemented. Once this possibility was on the anvil when Gandhian Jayaprakash Narayan was able to convince all top Jan Sangh leaders to dissolve the outfit and join the Janata Party. However, the old Jan Sangh members stayed constantly in touch with the RSS and this negated the very purpose. The liberal Atal Behari Vajpayee tried his best in terminating the relationship between the RSS and the Jan Sangh. He, however, succeeded only on paper because he could not dilute the loyalty of the old members. L.K. Advani was the one who founded the BJP because he thought that the old Jan Sangh members were not trusted any longer in the Janata Party. He was successful in building the party because JP had given credibility to the Jan Sangh members when he brought them into the Janata fold. By raising the Mandir issue, the RSS chief has only harmed the reputation of the BJP or, for that matter, Modi who is trying to give the impression that his party’s agenda is development and not division. To the BJP’s fortune, he is selling for the present and the party’s real intent, has receded into the background. And it is unfortunate that the secular parties are in disarray and do not give any hope of revival in the near future.

The mystical life is a puzzle, a bewilderment and a miracle T

HERE is no greater teacher of morals than love itself, for the first lesson that one learns from love is, 'I am not, you are.' This is self-denial, self-abnegation, without which we cannot take the first step on love's path. One may claim to be a great lover, to be a great admirer, to be very affectionate, but it all means nothing as long as the thought of self is there, for there is no love. But when the thought of self is removed then every action, every deed that one performs in life, becomes a virtue. It cannot be otherwise. A loving person cannot be unjust, a loving person cannot be cruel. Even if what he does seems wrong in the eyes of a thousand people, it cannot be wrong in reality. In reality, it will be right, for it is inspired by love. What is religion to the mystic? The religion of the mystic is a steady progress towards unity. How does he make this progress? In two ways. In the first way, he sees himself in

others, in the good, in the bad, in all; and thus, he expands the horizon of his vision. This study goes on throughout his lifetime; and as he progresses he comes closer to the oneness of all things. The other way of developing is to become conscious of one's own self in God and of God in one's self, which

MATTER & SPIRIT means deepening the consciousness of our innermost being. This process takes place in two directions: outwardly, by being one with all we see; and inwardly, by being in touch with that one’s life which is everlasting, by dissolving into it and by being conscious of that one spirit being the existence, the only existence. The law of the mystic is the understanding of the law. The average man says, “This per-

son has got the better of me. I will show him!' The mystic's outlook is different. He believes that no one can get away with anything in this world without paying for it. For every gain, the food one eats, every drop one drinks, every breath of air one takes, there is a tax to be paid. One is continually paying, and yet one does not know it. This shows that behind it all there is a perfect justice working. One cannot get the slightest comfort and pleasure without having to pay for it, and every pain has its own reward, though few seem to realize this. Therefore, behind all this falsehood and injustice, we see that there is a perfect wisdom working continually day and night. The mystic sees it in everything with open eyes; and that is the great miracle. For in the first place, the mystical life is a puzzle; in the second place a bewilderment; and in the third place a miracle. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Bachchan’s big Diwali bash DIWALI gave Bollywood celebrities the perfect reason to party hard. Dressed in their best traditional designer wear, the glam brigade of Bollywood hopped from one bash to another. The much-talked-about Diwali party hosted by Big B was held at his bungalow Jalsa, which was attended by most prominent members of the fraternity. Bachchan picked a bright kurta pyjama for the occasion and came out with wife Jaya to wish his waiting fans. The prominent guests at Big B’s party seem to have included filmmaker R Balki, who is currently working with Big B on Shamitabh, was with wife Gauri Shinde, and Kamal Hasan’s daughter Akshara, who makes her debut in the film. THIS refers to the report 'Lesser injuries this Diwali' (ADC, October 27) which is indeed very heartening. Meaningless statements APROPOS 'Sena-BJP together would've won over 200 seats: Sanjay Raut' (ADC, Oct 27), our politicians and their captive organs are adept at making meaningless statements and heralding them as major pronouncements. The latest editorial in a particular publication accuses Gujaratis of voting for the BJP because of their loyalty to Narendra Modi. It states: “They forgot late Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray's favours to them on the Hindutva issue." Gujaratis (and Marathis) have been in no danger of losing their Hindu identity at any time since the end of the Mughal rule in India. So what exactly is this "favour" that Balasaheb is supposed to have done for them? This kind of nonsense would be harmless if it was treated with the contempt it deserves. Unfortunately there are those who take it literally and use it as an excuse to foment unrest. IN the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has been raging for the last few months. I can imagine a hypothetical situation like this. Had Israel alone been pitted against the ISIS, the bloodthirsty terrorists would have been totally wiped out by this time. However there could have been another angle for such a war. Seeing the Jerusalem regime engaged in a war with an Islamic outfit, the entire Muslim world would have rallied behind the ISIS to put up a joint front against the common Jewish enemy.

AS per some local media reports, the BJP is thinking of going solo in the formation of government. The saffron party seems to have reposed complete faith in the unconditional outside support offered by the NCP. The BJP should be wary of such a move, as the NCP is nothing but an offshoot of the Congress itself and all its members are erstwhile Congressmen only. The Hindutva party should not forget how the Congress had back-stabbed Charan Singh, Chandrashekahr and Deve Gowda in the past. It will certainly make better political sense in accepting the backing of the Shiv Sena than that of the NCP, as the former is much more trustworthy than the latter one.

Chembur–Chunnabhatti bridge I WAS happy to read that the Chunnabhatti-BKC Bridge is going to be constructed to improve connectivity to the Bandra-Kurla Complex. The concerned authorities must also look into constructing a flyover and a foot over bridge from Choitram Gidwani Marg at Chembur Colony to Chunnabhatti and Eastern Express Highway, which will not just reduce the travel distance of many vehicles, but the foot over bridge will help the residents, mainly the students and workers of the area, who travel to these areas daily. Similarly a connector bridge is required from L B S Marg Sarvodaya Hospital at Ghatkopar (W) to Ramabai Nagar at Ghatkopar (E) via Ghatkopar railway station, Pantnagar, to help the residents of this vicinity to use the foot over bridge instead of the road.

IF the BJP manages to install its minority government in Maharashtra and somehow succeeds in securing the vote of confidence in the House within the time-limit stipulated by the Governor, then as per the rules of the legislature proceedings, another motion of noconfidence cannot be moved by the Opposition for the next six months. However if during a vote on some crucial Bill the government fails to secure the required number of Ayes in its favour, then such a situation can very well sound the death knell of the Saffron government even before the expiry of the six-month period.

Risks involved

Cleansing India from within

Helpless constitution

ALMOST every political party has given tickets to people with criminal backgrounds. No party is an exception to it and thus, the future of this country is again doomed. The constitution has no provision to restrict or debar such candidates from contesting elections. Those who drafted the constitution never imagined such a situation in the Indian political scenario and now nobody wants to make an amendment to the constitution, because of personal gains. INNER CLEANLINESS: Is Swachh Bharat aimed only at the exterior cleaniness – sweeping the roads and cleaning the surroundings – or does it also aim at cleaning the interiors – people's inner selves? IS Swachh Bharat aimed only at the exterior cleaniness, i.e. brooming the roads and cleaning the surroundings, or does it aim at cleaning the interiors, i.e. people's inner selves? A Swachh Bharat concept seems incomplete without the latter. In that case, I would like to nominate two people for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (internal cleaniness). They are Azam Khan and Yogi Adityanath. Hope they accept it and clean their hearts and tongue of the dirt they dish out to the aam janta.

for highlighting the ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.’ Both forms of media – print and the electronic – always play a vital role in educating the people. And the need of hour is to make every corner of each house, society, street, town, city, state and, in fact, the entire nation clean. As a result the number of injuries and deaths can be reduced to a great extent. Consequently, people will be healthier and will need minimum medicines and hospitalisation. The media can do a lot in this matter, directly as well as indirectly. —Abdul Monim, Vashi This is an important national service. Imran Khan’s police attendance postponed Siraj Khan deportation case:

By A Staff Reporter

T

he Sessions Court yesterday ordered social activist Imran Khan, who was arrested for helping a PoK man in his case, to be in attendance at the RAK Marg police station from 12 pm to 4 pm, from October 31. Khan has been helping Pakistan-occupied Kashmiri (PoK) Siraj Khan in his deportation case and was illegally detained by the RAK Marg police on October 10, despite being granted interim relief. The Sessions Court had earlier ordered Khan to be present at the police station from October 21 for investigation into Siraj Khan's case. However, Khan said, “I got married on October 16 could

not go to the police station because of the post-marriage ceremonies. Right now I am in Uttar Pradesh and train tickets are not available.” The prosecution demanded for documents to support the Khan's reasons for not following the court's previous order. The defence agreed to produce the wedding certificate and other documents at the next hearing. In the last hearing, the court had ordered a notice to be sent to Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Maria to be present at the next hearing. However, defence lawyer Yusuf Khan told the ADC, “I came to know that no such notice has been sent to the CP. So now I will write to him and attach the court's order.” The final hearing for the anticipatory bail to be granted to Khan is on October 31.

PICK YOUR

SNEAK IT IN If you’re not ready for a full-fledged pumpkin meal, here’s how to sneak it into your food to get the best benefits: n Breakfast treat: Add a little bit of pumpkin purée to your pancake batter or into your oatmeal in the morning. You will hardly notice it (apart from the delicious pumpkin flavour of course!) and you get all its benefits along with a delicious, wholesome breakfast. n Yoghurt snack: Pumpkin is a great snack, but we don’t expect you to sit and eat it raw. Instead, add some cooked, diced pieces into your yoghurt for an easy-tomake and delicious evening snack. n Hummus time: Pumpkin hummus may sound like a terrible idea, but you won’t even notice that it’s in there. Combine pumpkin purée with a pinch of spice such as cinnamon or nutmeg and mix it into your hummus. n Mash it up: Adding puréed vegetables to mashed potatoes is an age-old trick to getting children to eat them without realising it. The same works for pumpkin. Whisk some into your potatoes with a little milk for a delicious spin on the classic side dish. n Ice it right: Healthy icing? Sounds terrible, doesn’t it? It isn’t! Mash a little pumpkin with almond butter and cinnamon and you will have the most delicious, healthy icing to top your muffins. n Dip it in: The next time you have a party, sneak in some pumpkin and your guests will thank you for it. Use a low-calorie, soft cheese and mix a little mashed pumpkin into it. It tastes delicious! n Smooth sailing: Ever heard of pumpkin milkshake? Give your daily milkshake a healthy boost by mixing some puréed pumpkin into it.

PUMPKIN Carving out a pumpkin for Halloween isn’t too common in India, but you can still pick up a pumpkin to celebrate the season with, because it’s packed with health benefits! Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry tell you about some of them

WATCH WHAT YOU PICK There is usually a debate over whether canned food is worse than fresh food, with purists calling canned food much unhealthier. However, when it comes to canned pumpkin purée versus its freshly made counterpart, there isn’t much of a difference. Canned pumpkin purée contains several nutrients as well and is just as healthy. However, ensure that you choose the unsalted, organic versions. Don’t pick canned pumpkin purée that is meant to work as a pie filling. Not only does this variant contain a lot of added sugar, it also contains unhealthy preservatives, additives and stabilisers to give it the right consistency.

BEAUTY BENEFITS Pumpkin has several properties that are really good for your skin and hair. Its vitamin C content helps your skin, the carotenoids provide antioxidants, while potassium, copper, magnesium, manganese and iron help promote hair regrowth and skin renewal. Pumpkin also contains several B vitamins that boost circulation and help improve the quality of your skin. Here are a few other skin and hair benefits. n Helps damaged skin: Pumpkin is so rich in vitamins that it helps all skin types, especially if your skin has taken a beating. With regular exposure to the sun, your skin can become discoloured. The vitamin C in pumpkin acts as an antioxidant and smoothens and softens your skin, while remedying sun damage. n Helps moisturise your skin: Several skincare products contain properties that pumpkin already has, so it’s the perfect natural moisturiser! The enzyme content in pumpkin helps rejuvenate your skin, moisturising patches of dry skin while preventing and healing cracked skin. n Heals acne: Using pumpkin is one of the best ways to prevent acne. The fruit contains vitamins E and T, which tone and tighten your skin, reduce pore size, control oil and reduce inflammation. All these benefits can help prevent and heal acne. Rubbing a slice of pumpkin on your face, twice a day, can even reduce blemishes!

BEAUTY AT HOME CONdITION YOUr HAIr Use this easy DIY conditioner to get naturally shiny hair. n What you need: 2 cups of cooked pumpkin, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp yoghurt n Use it: Purée the pumpkin and yoghurt and slowly add in the coconut oil and honey. Blend it until smooth and then apply it over the length of your shampooed hair. Make sure your hair is damp and not dripping wet. Cover your hair with cling wrap, leave it on for fifteen minutes and then rinse it.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2014

USE THE SEEdS Don’t throw the seeds out of your pumpkin! All you need to do is roast them in the oven and sprinkle a little seasoning over them for a delicious, healthy snack. Pumpkin seeds are incredibly healthy, and a single serving can give you around 8.5 grams of protein, lots of fibre and enough minerals and vitamins to fulfil 22% of your daily nutritional needs.

BEST WAYS TO COOk pUMpkIN

pUMpkIN SEEd OIL Almost every part of the pumpkin is beneficial, and this includes the oil extracted from the seeds. It contains several omega-6 fatty acids, including linoleic acid, which helps develop and boost brain function, regulates metabolism and even improves bone health. It also contains phytosterols which lower blood cholesterol. The vitamin E content helps form red blood cells, while the vitamin K content promotes stronger bones. Additionally, the pyhtoestrogen content in pumpkin oil can also regulate and lower blood pressure.

EASE AWAY SpOTS A pumpkin facial can lighten your skin and get rid of dark spots caused by pollution and bad weather. Make this easy mask at home. n What you need: 1 tbsp puréed pumpkin, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp lemon/ lime juice, 1 tsp vitamin E oil n Use it: Mix all the ingredients together and apply it on to your face. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Pat your face with a little cold water and let it air dry.

MOISTUrISE YOUr FEET Since pumpkin helps to soften your skin, it’s a very effective treatment for dry heels. Use this trick to save your feet: n What you need: 2 tbsp pumpkin purée, 2 tbsp Vaseline n Use it: Combine this mixture together and massage it on to your feet. Wear cotton socks to seal it in overnight.

n Steam: Sounds weird, right? But, steaming pumpkin is a far healthier option than boiling it. When you boil any fruit or vegetable, the nutrients seep into the boiling liquid that you eventually throw away. So, steaming pumpkin is a better option, because it traps the nutrients inside it, while enhancing its flavour. n roasting: Our favourite way to cook pumpkin is to roast it. Brush cubes of pumpkin with a little olive oil, season it with salt and pepper and bake it until it is cooked through. You can use this to make a mash, add to salads, serve as a side dish or to even make soups. Because roasting uses dry heat, this method requires very little fat. n Stuffed pumpkin: Scoop out the flesh of a pumpkin and stir fry it with cubes of chicken, vegetables and rice. Stuff it back into the pumpkin shell and bake it. Not only does this dish taste delicious, it will also look impressive at a dinner party. However, the most impressive benefit, is the fact that when you bake the pumpkin, the nutrients from the skin seep into the stuffing, making it all the more nutritious. Win-win! n Stir-fry: If you love eating meat on a daily basis, but are scared of the implications of eating red meat too often, try switching things up with pumpkin. Pumpkin has a similar chunky, meaty texture, but is a much healthier alternative. Add it to stir-fries to prevent it from going to mushy and give your meals an instant makeover.

HEALTH BENEFITS FILL Up If you fight a daily battle with food cravings, and are constantly trying to avoid reaching out for another handful of crisps, give pumpkin a try. Snacking on it is extremely healthy as it gives you roughly 2g of fibre per ounce. Also, one cup contains merely 50 calories. So, you are not only going to stay full for longer, you will also avoid consuming too many calories.

SLEEp LIkE A BABY Pumpkin seeds are rich in a substance known as tryptophan, which helps you unwind and relax. As a result, you will sleep better and be in a better mood as well.

prEvENT prOSTATE CANCEr Researchers in Taiwan found that pumpkin, and especially its seeds, can help prevent prostate cancer. It was observed that the zinc contained in pumpkin prevented unhealthy prostate growth and promoted good sexual health, as it helps boost testosterone levels.

HAppY HEArT Pumpkin’s rich fibre content is great for your heart. A study conducted by Harvard University found that men

who ate a diet that has high in dietary fibre had a 40% lower risk of coronary heart diseases. A similar Swedish study, focused on women, found that they had a 25% lower risk of heart disease when they consumed a diet that was rich in fibre. Time to eat your fill of pumpkin!

SHArp SIgHT Pumpkins are rich in beta-carotine

and vitamin A, which helps boost your vision, even in low-light conditions. Also, it slows retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that can eventually lead to blindness.

LOWEr BLOOd prESSUrE Pumpkin is packed with phytoestrogens, that help prevent hypertension and can lower your blood pressure in just 12 weeks!

If you’ve noticed a slump in your appetite and play with your food instead of eating it, you need to boost your appetite. Shirley Mistry tells you how

I

f you find that you can’t bear to sit still at meals and looking at too much food on your plate makes you queasy, you might be suffering from a poor appetite. While it is commonly prevalent among senior citizens, you can also suffer from a lowered appetite if you are recovering from an illness or surgery, or are chronically underweight. However, your body still needs nutrients to function optimally and so, skipping meals or picking at your food isn’t going to help. Take a look at some simple ways through which you can bring your appetite back on track.

FIght FluIds That tall glass of water you always drink before your meals? Well, now is the best time to start skipping it! Fluids make you feel full and can ruin your appetite. So, avoid drinking too many fluids just before you sit down for a meal. Although it may take some getting used to (especially if it is a longstanding habit), avoiding fluids will certainly help you eat better at meal time.

ExpErt spEak We spoke to nutritionist Suman Agarwal, who gave us some handy tips to increase our appetite. “Avoid drinking too much milk, especially before meals, as it kills your appetite. Opt for yoghurt or paneer instead. They are both rich in calories and will help restore your appetite,” she says. Also, eat fruit two hours before your meal. “Grelin is a compound that is present in fructose, which you get from eating fruits. It boosts your hunger and whets your appetite, making it a good pre-meal snack. Avoid consuming too much caffeine and incorporate swimming and weight training into your routine, as they help boost your appetite,” she adds.

crank up thE aIr condItIonEr No, we aren’t trying to freeze you to death. But, studies show that we tend to eat more when we are feeling cold — doesn’t this explain you have hot chocolate cravings during the winter months? Hot weather suppresses your appetite. So, eating in a cool spot, or keeping your house at a slightly nippy temperature when it’s hot outdoors will actually stimulate your appetite, helping you to eat better.

BrEak It down Instead of having three big meals a day, eat 4-6 smaller ones. Trying to eat large meals, especially when you aren’t feeling hungry, can seem repulsive and daunting. So, break things down and try to eat smaller meals throughout the day. Psychologically, you will feel as though you are merely snacking, making it easier for you to eat.

a glass oF wInE A study conducted on patients who were undergoing chemotherapy showed that drinking a glass of white wine stimulated their hunger, helping them to eat more. While this is an inviting option, consult your doctor before you incorporate it into your routine.

ExErcIsE Have you noticed how children are always ravenous after a swim, a long bicycle ride, or even after running around in the park? This is because exercise stimulates your appetite and makes you crave food. This is the most effective tip on this list, but you don’t have to start pumping iron in the gym to get your appetite back on track. Start with taking a walk around your building, take on some more chores in the house or practise yoga.

Find your niche Pursue a career that you love, or at least work in an atmosphere that you enjoy. Since you spend so much time at work, if you’re unhappy at your job, or in an atmosphere where people are constantly pulling you down, you’re not going to be very happy with yourself! Find a place that appreciates you so you can learn to appreciate yourself.

2

Be honest Even white lies can weigh on your mind in the long run. We don’t realise how much harm they’re doing to our own mental health, so, make it a point to be as honest as you can, with yourself, as well as with others. You will feel much lighter and happier.

3

4

« 10 ways:

Begin your day better Start your day with something you love to do. If you enjoy a little peace and quiet, spend the first half hour of your day meditating or taking in the sunrise with a cup of tea. If you like to read or listen to music, devote half an hour every morning to it. It will help release any stress or negativity you’re feeling and prepare you to face the day.

care for your car

5 Spend time alone It’s very difficult to know who you truly are and be happy with yourself if you’re always surrounded by other people. An easy way to do this, is to spend some time with yourself. Learn about your likes and dislikes and do things you want to do — it will help you appreciate and love yourself in the long run.

Stop comparing yourself Self-depreciation is never a good thing and when you start comparing yourself to others; it is an easy trap to fall into. Everyone’s idea of success is different. So, count your achievements instead of weighing them against everyone else’s and you will be much happier.

« quick quiz to know yourself

visionary!

Love yourseLf The easiest way to stay healthy and happy is to learn how to love yourself before anyone or anything else. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to put your needs first in a healthy manner

7 Groom yourself This sounds like we’re telling you that how you look matters — and you’re right. But, it is not for the reasons you think we’re recommending it. The more groomed you are, the better you will feel inside out. Walking around with unwashed hair, in track pants and slippers will make you feel as sluggish as you look. Take care of your outer appearance and you will automatically begin to like who you are inside, just a little more.

Be active It’s much easier to be happy when you’re physically active. Exercising every day will help you feel more at peace with who you are, happier with your mind and your body. It also makes you feel like you’re doing something productive — which is always a good thing.

Cut out the downers Cut people who want to bring you down out of your life. Surround yourself not by yes men, but by people who genuinely care about your wellbeing (and don’t criticise you all the time either!). It’s difficult to do so, but try to ignore and mentally cut out people who make you feel bad about yourself.

9

6 Forgive yourself It doesn’t matter whether other people keep harping on your mistakes, the one question you should ask yourself is — are you ready to move on? Make every day a steady process towards becoming a better person. Learn from your mistakes, move forward and then forgive yourself. Constantly beating yourself up about something in the past will only breed selfloathing, which can lead to self esteem issues in the long run.

You need to take in to account several factors while you are purchasing spectacles. Shirley Mistry recommends you take this quiz to find out if you are wearing the correct pair of glasses 1. The nose pads of your spectacles sit halfway down your nose. a. Yes. b. No. 2. The top rim of your frames comes only slightly above your line-of-vision. a. Yes. b. No. 3. You usually buy your spectacles online. a. Yes. b. No.

8

4. You are using a prescription that dates back to eight months or longer, to purchase your spectacles. a. Yes. b. No. 5. You are constantly pushing up your glasses because they keep sliding down. a. Yes. b. No.

10 Free yourself No, don’t quit your job and go on a long journey of self-discovery. There’s a way to be happy and healthy while still keeping your job, your friends, family and more importantly, your money! All you have to do is spend at least one or two days every week doing things that you love doing. Forget about what society or people around you want — if you want it, go for it!

Mostly As You are wearing inappropriate spectacles if most of your answers were option ‘A’. The nose pads of your spectacles must sit on your nose, only slightly below your eyes and not several inches below it. Similarly, if your spectacles keep sliding down, it means that the nose pads need to be tightened in order to reduce the gap, making it sit snugly on your nose. Always get your eyes checked every few months and get a fresh prescription before purchasing a new pair of spectacles to ensure that they are best suited to your power. Also, avoid buying glasses online, as the lens can’t be centred to suit your line-of-vision specifically. Wearing ill-fitting glasses can cause headaches, dizziness, blurriness and can even worsen your power, so buck up! Mostly Bs You seem to be aware of the perils of wearing ill-fitting spectacles and check all the necessary boxes, which means that you aren’t harming your eyes, at least through the spectacles you wear! Ensure that you maintain these habits and help out friends and family if you notice that they are following the poor habits that we have listed in our questions. Keep up the good work!

At home, if you avoid eating food in your bed, make sure you apply the same rule when it comes to your car. If not you, your friends will definitely spill something on your seats or floor mats. TREADING THE WRONG PATH Treadmills are simple to use, right? Not quite, says Dev Goswami. You might be making mistakes that can injure you, or render your workout ineffective. Read on to find out more

H >> DDP yoga allows you to get a ripped body without running the risk of major injuries

« Know more: DDP Yoga

DDP Yoga is a new fitness solution that promises to help you get a body that’s similar to an athlete’s physique — through yoga! Dev Goswami tells you more

W

hile we all know how yoga benefits your body and keeps it fit, we’re sure that you never imagined that it would give you ripped abs, bulging biceps and an athletic physique. A new form of yoga, called DDP Yoga, promises just that. Originally from the US, the yoga workout is available in the form of DVDs and teaches postures that feature various poses and exercises. You can get your hand, on one of their DVDs since they do ship to India, but be prepared to pay a hefty price, as they start from approximately `5,000 onwards.

What is DDP Yoga?

ow do you a use a treadmill? You would think that this question is a no-brainer and we’re guessing that your answer goes something along the lines of switching on the machine, plugging in your earphones or picking up a magazine and hopping on. Well, you’re not entirely wrong, but you’re leaving out several important aspects that are necessary to ensure your safety and to make sure that your body gets the best possible workout. Read on to ensure that you aren’t making the following mistakes.

straight to the moon Do not start with your treadmill on a very high setting. Remember that your muscles need to warm up to perform any intense exercise. Starting off on a speed-walking or running speed means that you can run the risk of getting injured, or pulling a muscle. So, spend around 5-10 minutes walking at a leisurely pace and then increase the intensity every 4-5 minutes.

FliP, FliP, FliP Walking on the treadmill can get a little boring — there’s no doubting that. So, we don’t blame you for wanting to flip through a magazine or a book, watch videos on your phone or even play a game. However, all these things act as distractions and prevent you from walking or jogging at an intensity that will benefit your body. Listen to music instead and concentrate on increasing

the speed and incline to ensure an effective workout.

incline? What’s that Unless you’re a hardcore gymenthusiast, we’re betting you didn’t even know that most treadmills allow you to vary the angle of incline. Similar to the speed setting, this helps increase or decrease the intensity and makes your workout more realistic. Remember that when it comes to running outdoors, it is always better to run on a varied terrain to make it more gruelling and add intensity. So, use the incline setting (ask a trainer if you can’t find the button) to switch around your level of difficulty.

like they do in feature films. However, did you know that this is actually one of the most common ways to get injured when you are running or walking on a treadmill? Reduce the pace of the treadmill belt, then lower the incline of the treadmill, match your walking speed with that of the machine and get off only after the belt has come to a complete halt.

huFFing & PuFFing

Breathing is an important part of exercising. But, too many people make the mistake of over-thinking their breathing. Don’t forgot that your body is naturally well-engineered. It knows exactly what to do — from how long your strides should be, to how much and how often you should mY Dear liFe! breathe — these are not aspects that Never, ever hold on to the side-rails for you need to pay even the slightest support. You might think that you’re holding on for dear life, but, you’re doing attention to. Concentrate more on adding variety and intensity to the opposite. Think of it this way — do your workout. you ever walk with your arms stiff, clutching an imaginary, horizontal bar by your side? Doing so on a treadmill will actually ruin your posture, not only negating the benefits of your workout, but also making you unstable and more prone to falling off. Let your body walk or jog in its natural form to stay safe and get the best workout.

1, 2, 3... jumP! Admit it, you’ve always harboured dreams of jumping off a moving treadmill on to the side bars — just

DDP Yoga is named after Diamond Dallas Page, an exprofessional wrestler. He developed the programme for athletes who, like him had to take into account injuries suffered from high impact sports, while staying fit. DDP Yoga helps you keep yourself in tip-top shape, while ensuring that it remains lowimpact, so that your joints don’t take a beating. While it is aimed at those who are injury-prone, it is also perfect for people who want to build a ripped body without running the risk of major injuries. The programme includes several plank poses, yoga push-ups and lunges.

Does it Work?

We haven’t actually tried the workout and so, we can’t speak from personal experience. But, the programme has earned rave reviews across the world, especially in the US. One of its USPs is that it combines low-impact yoga poses with a conventional high-burn rate exercise to result in weight-loss, fat burn and ripped muscles. The exercises that the programme includes are quite simple and relatively harmless. The programme includes a list of tips and warnings that you must remember while you perform each exercise. For example, Dallas recommends that you use a heart rate monitor to keep track of your heart rate. Similarly, he also warns that you shouldn’t push yourself too much if you want to prevent injuries. DDP Yoga seems like a unique workout, which combines the best of two worlds. It goes without saying that you should consult a trainer before you start practising this programme. But, compared to most similar workouts, it certainly seems to be safer and more effective. *You can find out more about the workout and buy the DVDs from their website: www.ddpyoga.com

symptoms of slEEp paralysis

Although these are all common symptoms of sleep paralysis, you might not notice all the symptoms in every case. n The temporary inability to move. n An inability to make any vocal sounds. n A feeling of breathlessness. n Experiencing hallucinations such as the presence of someone else in the room.

Sleep paralysis is a scary condition, where you wake up in a state of immobility. Dev Goswami & Sara Shah find out more about this disorder and tell you what you can do

I

magine waking up in the morning and being unable to move. You will obviously be petrified and so, your next step will be to call out for help. Except, you can’t speak! This scary situation best describes sleep paralysis, an uncommon sleep disorder. However, sleep paralysis is not considered to be a dangerous medical condition and can be treated quite quickly with healthy sleep schedules and in certain cases, with medication. Read on as we tell you more about this condition.

what is slEEp paralysis? Sleep paralysis is basically the inability to move or speak when you’re waking up or, in rare cases, as you’re falling asleep. While your mind is completely conscious, but your body will not be able to move. This phase of being ‘stuck’ can last from several seconds to several minutes and can be extremely unnerving. A feeling of breathlessness sometimes accompanies the feeling of paralysis, and patients have

been known to complain about hallucinations such as strange noises or feeling a strange presence near them. As you can imagine, this makes sleep paralysis an even more distressing and terrifying experience.

thE CausEs It is normal for your muscles to be paralysed at certain times when you are asleep. During sleep paralysis is that your

body’s mechanism (that causes your muscles to stiffen up while you sleep) temporarily persists even after you have woken up, which results in you being unable to move. Factors that are believed to increase the risk of sleep paralysis include a lack of sleep, mental conditions such as stress or bipolar disorder, erratic sleep schedules and narcolepsy, which is a disorder that causes people to lost control of their sleep cycle.

what you Can do Although sleep paralysis is not a psychological problem by medical definition, the experience is accompanied by several psychological symptoms, which is why a session with a psychologist can go a long way in helping treat the problem (see Expert Speak for more). But before you do so, visiting a general physician might suffice. He/ she might be able to recognise the non-psychological factors of sleep paralysis which include a lack of sleep, erratic sleep schedule or other sleep disorders. Addressing these factors can often help cure the condition. But, if you do not notice an improvement, then you should visit a psychologist who might be able to identify the underlying emotions that are leading to the condition, as well as prescribe anti-depressants that can help you regulate your sleep.

ExpErt spEak “Sleep paralysis is a physical state caused by subconscious mental activities. At times, as a reaction to any fearful or dreadful subconscious thoughts that are present in your dream, your mind is unable to send signals to your limbs to move. A few ways to help prevent this situation include relaxing your mind before you go to sleep by either writing down the events of your day or listening to soothing music. When you wake up every morning, take deep breaths for a few seconds before you get up from your bed. However the most important — and often least adopted step should be to seek help if you can’t manage the condition. Remember that it is never shameful to visit a psychologist.” - Kinjal Pandya, psychologist

Wondering if sleep applications really work? The Health & Fitness Team tested out a few of the most popular ones and were left quite disappointed slEEpBot

SleepBot works as an application that helps analyse your sleep patterns. Over a period of time, it records the amount of time you’ve been sleeping (tap a button when you’re going to sleep and do the same when you’re waking up) and your movements while you’ve been sleeping. The latter is a nifty feature as it also tracks surrounding sound, so if you’ve been moving too much without any outside disturbance, you can investigate the reasons for doing so. It also plots a graph after a few days, showing you how much sleep you’ve gotten, and then compares it to how much sleep you should be getting. While it’s a good feature, I think that with the ‘sleep debt’ that the application shows you, you might be tempted to oversleep to make up for lost sleep. The application didn’t help me sleep, but it’s a good tool to have when you’re trying to figure out where you’re going wrong and correct bad sleeping habits. availability iOS (Free) and Android (Free) rating ***

I have an erratic sleep schedule and find it extremely hard to fall asleep (especially when I go to bed early), so I was really excited about this application. It has up to forty different sounds including wind in the trees, rain, underwater

sounds and some humming. Like most sleeping applications, Sleep Zen Sounds allows you to mix two or more sounds together. You can also set a timer. This application includes some unique sounds such as the sound of a crowd, a cat purring, white noise and even a thunderstorm. Unfortunately, I like sleeping in darkness with no noise, so this probably wasn’t the right application for me. I took an entire weekend to try out the sounds, but I didn’t like most of them. availability iOS (free) and Android (free) rating ***

slEEp pillow

A couple of years ago, a few sleepless nights made me download this application in a desperate bid to sleep better. It has over 70 sounds such as those of water on a beach, rain, fire crackling and a windmill. You can make your own mix, set a timer once you have selected your sound of choice and let the application work its magic. I, for one, find it hard to sleep with any light or sound around me, but this seems to have hit a sweet spot. I usually set the timer for 20 minutes and I’ve never been awake to actually hear what happens once the minutes are up! Sleep Pillow is great for days when I am exhausted beyond belief. availability iOS (free) and Android (free) rating ****

At the end of the day, your body is so exhausted that you fall asleep in a microsecond. But, is that sleep peaceful? Not really, at least in my case. So, I decided to try an application called Relax Completely. The application is basically sleep hypnosis by Darren Marks, who is a very successful hypnotherapist. I did fall asleep over it, but not because of the hypnosis! From the graphics to the voice-over, everything about this application is so uninteresting that it is bound to bore you to sleep. It

I’m particularly apprehensive about sleep applications, especially those that promise to ease my haggered mind after a long, troubling day. On most days, it takes a while for me to fall asleep, so something that would help speed up the process and help me toss and turn a little less is a welcome prospect. This application is nifty and attractive at first glance. It’s easily customisable, with pictures that can be put up to describe your moods and a sleep journal to help you track your sleep habits. The sleep journal is one of the most interesting and useful parts of the application, but the charts that track your history fell flat with me. The dial to record the hours you’ve slept is also pretty inconvenient — a simple way to log in numbers would have looked less attractive, but would have been much easier to use. The tips are helpful, but nothing you can’t find out with a simple Google search. It’s a fun application to have if you like sleep journals, which is why I was quite caught up with it. But I didn’t sleep any better, so it’s not of much use in the long run. availability iOS (free) rating ***

WONDERFUL

« problem solver: ask our beauty expert

BARBARA, ouR BeAuty expeRt, will help fix youR pRoBleMS

Dear Barbara, I have extremely sensitive skin. Every time I get waxed, I end up burning a part of it. Now, I am scared to get waxed. People have suggested that I opt for flavoured wax, which is made for sensitive skin. While I want to try it out, I am a little wary because of my past experiences. I really need advice. Please help! — Rashi Verma, Malad (e)

WALNUT Walnuts are undoubtedly food for your brain – boosting brain power, memory and concentration. But, did you know that walnut oil is extremely good for your skin and hair as well? Shirley Mistry tells you more

Dear Rashi, If your skin gets burnt every time you get waxed, it seems as though it is extremely sensitive to normal wax. A little overheated wax will cause your skin to burn. You should opt for flavoured wax as it’s truly built for people with sensitive skin. It comes in several flavours including chocolate, strawberry and aloe vera. These waxes not only soothe your skin and help prevent burns, but they also make your skin appear radiant. If that doesn’t help, try cold wax instead, since your skin might be sensitive to heat. However, if the burns are severe, contact a cosmetologist. Dear Barbara, My feet are extremely ugly, so much so that they look like they belong to a construction worker. I have seen people notice them and grimace. They’re a darker shade than the rest of my body, even though I keep them covered through the day. I don’t have the time (or the money) to indulge in pedicures that often, but I still want to make sure that my feet look presentable when I wear open-toed shoes or sandals. I am extremely embarrassed and don’t know how to solve this problem. Please help! — Shanaya Jain, Mahim (w) Dear Shanaya, Feet are the most neglected part of our body, but they do the maximum work. Tanning, calluses and cracks can make them look less than pretty. But, don’t worry, your problem comes with an easy solution. Even if you don’t have the time to get pedicures, you can invest in a good pumice stone to get rid of your foot related issues. You can also use foot creams that will help you get rid of the tan and make your skin soft and supple. If all this fails to work, you should consult a dermatologist.

>> Walnuts are extremely beneficial to your health

A

handful of almonds and walnuts were a permanent fixture of my childhood, just like they are for several people. A small box in my schoolbag that contained these nuts, were my mother’s contribution towards making me a healthier child and probably, a slightly smarter one too. Known for its excellent brain boosting properties, walnuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and are extremely healthy. But, walnut oil, which is usually derived from the nut using coldpressing — a technique that doesn’t use heat or additional air to draw out the oil (making it purer) — is a godsend for your skin and hair as well. Pick up a bottle of this oil which is available at most speciality food stores, because its skin and hair benefits are innumerable. Take a look.

Anti-wRinkle Solution Walnut oil might seem like a new skincare ingredient, but it has been around for several hundred years. In fact, it is considered to be a really good remedy for wrinkles, crows feet and fine lines. The best part about walnut oil is that it is not greasy, so you don’t have to worry about oily skin once you apply it.

and feet, massage some lukewarm walnut oil onto them and slip on some socks. Although walnut oil isn’t greasy, we recommend doing this before you head to bed, to ensure that the walnut oil works its magic overnight and doesn’t get rubbed off when you’re sleeping.

Anti-fungAl

Soothe pSoRiASiS

Before you decide to splurge on expensive anti-fungal solutions, give walnut oil a try. For pesky, fungal foot problems such as athlete’s foot and candida, walnut oil is the perfect solution. Simply apply a teaspoon of walnut oil on the affected area and massage it in. You can also combine it with other herbs such as rosemary, to help fight fungal infections more effectively.

Psoriasis is a painful skin condition that can result in sore and itchy skin. Also, it can spread from one part of your body to another, making it essential for you to treat it immediately. You can apply a small amount of walnut oil on the affected region by dipping a ball of cotton and applying it on your skin, or by adding a cap-full of oil to your bath water.

tipS & toeS >> Use a pumice stone to get rid of dead skin

>> Cold-pressed walnut oil can is pure and has multiple benefits

If you find that the skin on your hands and feet looks dry, white and flaky by the end of the day, don’t worry, because you no longer need to book an appointment for a nourishing manicure and pedicure session. All you need to do is wash your hands

heAlthy hAiR Walnut oil is good for your hair. It helps get rid of dandruff, promotes the growth of shiny, lustrous locks and prevents hairfall. Massage warm walnut oil on your scalp and through till the ends of your hair. Keep it on for 15-20 minutes and then wash it off with warm water, shampooing as usual.

‘Will name those having case on black money’ N EW DELHI: Government will make public names of only those people against whom there is a prosecutable case in connection with tax evasion through offshore accounts, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said yesterday, amid the Congress asking for disclosure of all names of black money holders. “We will disclose only those names against whom we have prosecutable evidence,” he told PTI. His remark comes hours after the government disclosed before the Supreme Court eight more names, including that of Pradip Burman, one of Dabur India promoters, a bullion trader and a Goa miner against whom it has started prosecution for allegedly stashing black money in foreign banks. Promising to disclose more names of black money holders who

have come under the scanner, the government said that all foreign bank accounts cannot be termed as ‘illegal’. Earlier, Congress leader Digvijay Singh attacked Jaitley for his comments that Congress would be embarrassed when all names of those who stashed money abroad were made public. Terming Jaitley’s remarks as ‘mischievous’, Singh said: “If he has guts, he should reveal those names.” He said if any Congress member is found guilty, the party would ‘punish’ the person. Another Congress leader and a former Union Minister Salman Khurshid said the party has no problem if all names are put out in public domain.

12,000 ITBP personnel to be deployed along LAC N

EW DELHI: Against the backdrop of over 300 transgressions by the Chinese Army along the LAC till August this year, Government has given an in-principle approval for induction of nearly 12,000 personnel in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, a force which guards the 3,488 km-long SinoIndia border. The 12 new battalions (12,000 personnel) will be recruited mainly for deployment at 54 new Border out Posts (BoPs) that will be set along Sino-India border in Arunachal Pradesh, official sources told PTI. The setting up of new posts, announced by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday last, will bolster the presence of Indo-Tibetan Border Police along the strategic frontier in Arunachal Pradesh which has witnessed incursion attempts from Chinese side because of large gaps between two border posts. Terming the incursion as ‘transgression’, the Government had informed Rajya Sabha in August this year that Chinese Army has transgressed the Sino-Indian border 334 times this year and a total of 1,278 times between 2010-13. Chinese Army transgressed the border 334 times till August 4, this year. The number of such incidents stood at 411 in 2013, 426 in 2012 and 213 in 2011, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had said on the floor of the House. The sources now said an ‘in-

principle’ approval has been granted by the Union Home Ministry after the ITBP had submitted a detailed plan that it would require to raise additional 12 battalions to man these new locations. The present strength of the ITBP is 62 battalions and 58 of them are deployed along the Sino-India border and remaining four in Naxalhit areas. “An in-principle approval has been made in this regard,” a senior Home Ministry official said and added that after a final approval, large scale recruitment will be carried out in a phased manner over a period of five years. Apart from setting up of 54 new outposts, the Home Minister had also announced a Rs.175 crore package for beefing up infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh.

Pivot point = 8014 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7963. Support (2) = 7935. Resistance (1) = 8042. Resistance (2) = 8093. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long black body candle on higher volumes. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. However, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day moving averages. Further, the 5 day moving average has crossed above the 25 day moving average. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 7961) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 7900) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7946) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 7144) Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a negative bias. s concerns on inflation front ebb, Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan will adopt a dovish stance in the December policy review meet and cut rates in February, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA-ML) yesterday said. "We expect Governor Rajan to sound more dovish in December and cut rate in February. After all, we see CPI inflation well set to meet the RBI's targets of 8 % in January 2015 and 6 % in January 2016 (with normal monsoon rains)," the top foreign brokerage said in a note. Rajan had overturned the majority opinion of the members in RBI's Technical Advisory Committee

(TAC) and chose to hold the rates at the last monetary policy review in October, according to minutes of the meeting. BofA-ML said Rajan may not go in for a rate cut at the December 2 review as it wants to make sure the inflation is "truly coming off", especially given the fact high rates result in some sacrifice on the growth front. Before the September 30 policy review, wherein he left the rates unchanged, Rajan had told a banking summit what was the point in cutting interest rates at the first instance of a cooling off in inflation only to be increased again to fight price rise. In the note, the US brokerage said India's GDP growth will slip below 5 % in the September quarter as against the handsome 5.7

% print in the April-June period of the current fiscal. Rajan will opt for the cut at the February monetary policy review, once the 8 % inflation target is met and also after indications on the rabi (winter crop) output are received, BofA-ML said. The rabi crop is expected to be good as the late rains have helped and the same is visible in the higher sown area, the brokerage said, adding this will help cool food prices. Inflation measured by consumer prices has been trending down for over four months, and came in at 6.7 % in September, much below the RBI's targets. The recent cuts in the petrol and diesel prices will also help cool inflation, the brokerage said.

NSEL Crisis: Govt Mulls Board Changes For Merged Entity T BY A Business Reporter

A

fter ordering merger of crisis-hit NSEL with parent firm Financial Technologies to help affected investors get their dues, the government is starting a process to assess compensation amounts and is also considering a proposal to make changes to the Board of the merged entity. The Corporate Affairs Ministry last week unveiled a proposal to merge NSEL — which has been embroiled in an over Rs 5,600 crore payment crisis — with Jignesh Shah-led Financial Technologies (India) Ltd. Sources said the Ministry would now start a process of assessing the compensation amount to be given to affected investors and a chartered accountant entity might be appointed in this regard, reports PTI. Besides, the possibility of completely or partially replacing the FTIL board would also be looked into, sources said, adding that these proposals are being considered after taking into account suggestions made by the commodity sector regulator FMC (Forward

Markets Commission) and other government departments. This is the first time that the Ministry has invoked a clause in the Companies Act for a forced merger in the private sector due to “public interest”, while a takeover of FTIL board, if it happens, would be the first such development since the Satyam case in 2009. In Satyam case, the scandal-hit IT firm was later sold to Tech Mahindra through a government-monitored auction. Post merger, FTIL would take over all the liabilities of National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL), including payments due to be paid to investors and others to help in repayment process. Soon after the government’s amalgamation order on October 21, FTIL had said in a brief statement that it “is taking appropriate steps in the matter in consultation with the legal Counsel of the company”. No immediate comments could be obtained from FTIL on the proposal for making changes to its Board following merger of NSEL, which itself would fructify after tak-

MF’s Reduce Exposure In Bank Stocks By A Business Reporter

utual funds have reduced their exposure in bank stocks to Rs 55,398 crore in September, after raising it for seven consecutive month. According to the latest data available with Securities and Exchange Board of India, MF investments in bank stocks as on September 30 declined to Rs 55,398 crore, accounting for 18.84% of the total equity assets under management (AUMs) of Rs 2.94 lakh crore. In comparison, the MF industry’s exposure to banking sector had reached to an all-time of Rs 56,625 crore in August this year. However, MFs had been raising their exposure to banking shares since January. Software was the second most

preferred sector with MFs, last month with an exposure of Rs 31,834 crore, followed by pharma (Rs 21,908 crore), auto (Rs 18,892 crore) and finance (Rs 16,358 crore). According to market participants, MFs have been showing interest in banking stocks since the beginning of the year amid rising equity market and the current decline is mainly due to profit booking. They believe that the ongoing market rally might see mutual fund assets getting diversified. This year has seen a consistent growth in investment in banking stocks by equity fund managers and fund infusion has grown from Rs 30, 339 crore in January to Rs 56,625 crore in August. In percentage term, exposure has risen from 16.6% to 20.10% during the period.

ing into account submissions and objections, if any, made by the shareholders and creditors of the two companies. FTIL shares were trading nearly flat at Rs 195.75 in morning trade after paring their opening trade gains. The Ministry’s decision comes more than a year after the payment scam at NSEL came into light in July 2013. The move has been initiated taking into consideration “essential public interest” as the exchange is “not left with any viable, sustainable business while FTIL has necessary resources to facilitate speedy recovery of dues”. So far, the crisis-hit spot exchange has managed to recover only little over Rs 360 crore dues from defaulters, a part of which has been disbursed and the rest is in an escrow account. Funds worth about Rs 5,300 crore are yet to be recovered for subsequent payment to affected investors.

he next six months are likely to favour job aspirants as 88% of employers are willing to increase their staff strength on account of improved economic conditions, a TeamLease Employment Outlook Survey report says. According to it, the for the next six months (October 2014 - March 2015), global macroeconomic trends and domestic demand have put business and employment sentiment on a fast paced upward trajectory. Around 91 % of the survey respondents said business outlook, for the coming half year, has improved, while 88 % said employment outlook has increased. Accordingly, job growth is expected to follow suit at a stupendous 12.8%, the report said. Further, the optimism in the employment outlook seems to be not just confined to the metros but tier 2 towns as well. Hindupur, Visakhapatnam, Hubli, Thiruvananthapuram, Belgaum, Aurangabad, Kota, Ajmer

and Meerut are some of the new catchment areas which recruiters have identified to hire from over the next half year, the report said. “There is an overall buoyant mood owing to the right noises the government is making as well as the festive season,” TeamLease Services Senior Vice President Kunal Sen said. Sen further said: “We are seeing increased hiring mandates. After year-long fluctuations, the overall business and hiring sentiment seems to have stabilised and is seen moving towards growth. We are confident the trend will translate into action on ground.“ From a sector perspective, with almost all the sectors indicating a positive swing in the business sentiment, the business atmosphere in the upcoming half year is expected to be exuberant across industries. While IT, Healthcare & Pharma and Retail seems to be the primary drivers, Telecom, FMCD, FMCG and Financial Services also contribute to the upward movement in the hiring sentiment, the report said. The report further said the biggest gainer in the coming half year will be the junior and senior level profiles. Moreover, employers are increasingly stressing on hiring superior technological expertise as well as better skilled employees. Some of the profiles would be in demand in the coming half year are product /project management, new social media management, big data and predictive analytics, the report said.

Out of the blue, a Russian spy walks into their offices and offers a vital piece of information: the President of Russia will be assassinated during his forthcoming visit to New York City to attend the funeral of the recently deceased U.S. Vice President. The name of the assassin: Evelyn Salt. Concerned about the safety of her husband, who she cannot contact, she goes on the run. MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2014

E

arly morning concerts on the occasion of Diwali are now the in thing. The trend was set by 'Chaturang' which is a leading cultural organisation. It had organized the early morning programme of Kishori Amonkar, way back in 1990s. The trend caught on and now every group and organisation comes forward with its own plans of early morning programmes. Bhavan's Cultural Centre at Andheri (W) is now a virtual bastion of culture. It had hosted a morning concert featuring Dr Rewa Natu from Pune. Rewa is a pupil of well-known singer Dr Veena Sahasrabuddhe. She sings in a style which is a faithful reflection, if not imitation of her mentor. Her other guru is Dr Digvijay Vaidya who has learned in the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya tradition and also from the famous actor singer Chhota Gandhrava. Natu had selected 'Bhatiyar' as her main melody. This raga has a peculiar character which was well brought out by the singer through her rendition. She also sang the raga 'Pratiksha' which has been made by sitarist Shankar Abhyankar. It was an interesting creation. Supriya Joshi on the harmonium and Mukta Raste on the tabla lent superb instrumental support. It was an all-woman cast and a sight to behold. 'Pratahswar', another early morning concert format designed by 'Pancham Nishad' happens every year from October to May on the last Sunday of the month. Last Sunday, it began its post monsoon phase with a recital by Karnataka-based singer Ganapati Bhat who is a pupil of the maestro late Basavraj Rajguru. He sings in a melodious voice like his guru.

Tragic tale

C

inmatographer turned director Sanjay Jadhav struck gold with ‘Duniyadari' and now his latest film, a love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl set against the Mumbai riots of 1993 after the Babri Masjid incident is a very touching and sensitive tale. Alia (Saie Tamhankar) and Amar (Swapnil Joshi) are in love and are supported by their close friends like Upendra Limaye, a Muslim, and Sameer Dharmadhikari, a Hindu and Urmila Kanetkar, Sameer’s wife. The Hindu-Muslim locality is amiable until the dreaded riots break out. The film has a good screenplay and the riots depicted in films like ‘Parzania’ and ‘Tamas’ also have a touch of that utter senselessness in the carnage in the film. The film dwells on communalism and the problems of the minorities and how peace within communities can be maintained with love and not war. The performances by Swapnil Joshi and Saie Tamhankar are first rate. Upendra Limaye, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Urmila Kanetkar Kothare, Chinmay Mandlekar, Nagesh Bhosle, Illa Bhate, Bharati Acharekar, Kamlesh Sawant, Dr Vilas Ujawne, Uday Tikekar, support well. The music by Amit Raj is good especially the Sufi song. Technically a very polished product. See this film for it's different subject.

atya Kalavardinin, the cultural wing of Fine Arts Society, organised an exquisite Odissi performance by Sangeetha Rajan and her disciple at their hall in Chembur. It is heartening to note that the Society has started a separate wing to encourage young talent. Accomplished Odissi exponent Sangeetha Rajan is the disciple of renowned exponent Debi Basu and it is encouraging to note as to how Sangeetha is now blossoming into a fine mentor as well, which was quite evident from her performance. The performance commenced with the pure dance number 'Sthayi Nirttya' that exposed the lyrical Odissi movements performed by the disciples of Sangeetha; namely, Aaheli, Drishti, Swarna, Suchismita and Anoushka. It was a pleasure to watch the young dancers dancing with passion and involvement. The Ardha Narishwar concept of Lord Shiva symbolises the concept of the masculine and feminine spirit,

while the right side of the body represents the masculine power, the left side represents the feminine power, hence the concept of Shiva and Shakti is combined together; this number was performed well by Sangeetha pertaining to both elegance and vitality. Sangeetha also performed to two popular astapadis from Jaydev's Geeta Govinda, Yahi Madhava and Priye Carusheele, both depict the emotions of Radha with relation to Krishna, symbolising the divine and the human soul reaching out to the supreme. Sangeetha is blessed with beautiful eyes and an innocent face that carries emotions with ease and subtlety. The unusual song of the evening was the Oriya number ' A a j a n a Dekhele Ghana' that narrates the experience of a village girl who encounters Lord Krishna for the first time and is completely spellbound. The dancers concluded the number with the joyous dance of Lord Shiva known as 'Ananda Tandava'. It was a fine visual treat of both structure and substance.

IN BRIEF Smruti Samaroh

Alka Kubal in ‘Olakh’

Actress Shilpa Shirodkar sounded the clapper board for Leher Entertainment's maiden Marathi venture titled 'Olakh' at Sutar Wadi, Madh Island on October 15 which was followed by a six-day shooting stint. The film is being produced by Harsh Shashan and directed by Jameel Khan (erstwhile assistant director with Farooq Siddiqui, Imtiaz Punjabi, Deeya Singh, Tony Singh). Cast: Alka Kubal (all-time hit 'Maherchi Saadi' fame), new find Bhushan Patil opposite Khushboo Tawde, Sumukhi Pendse, Arun Nalawade ('Shwaas' fame) and others.

New play

A new play written and directed by Vijay Kenkre will be premiered on November 2. The play brings together two ace comedians Sanjay Narvekar and Bhushan Kadu for the first time and the play is a take on the going-ons in the political arena in the guest houses reserved for politicians also known as Circuit Houses. The play has art design by Rajan Bhise and lighting by Sheetal Talpade along with choreography by Sonia Parchure. The play also stars Mayura Ranade and Hemangi Velankar.

‘Chandri’ mahurat held

The mahurat of Nimkar Foundations ‘Chandri’ was held recently at Future Studios, Goregaon with a mahurat shot taken on lead actor Saaransh Bhavsar by director Sunil Parab. The music is by Ashok Patki. The story is about an Adivasi girl falling in love with a royal prince. The film also has Manoj Kolhatkar, Siddhi Patne and Khushboo Tawde in the lead.

Youth festival

Dadar Matunga Culural Centre organised a youth festival, last week, at their auditorium in Matunga, featuring young talented classical musicians. 12 year old Saumya Sathe was the youngest vocalist to be featured and created a lasting impression. Saumya is the grand daughter of veteran vocalist Pandit Sharad Sathe and is a student of Gurgoan International School. This was her first solo recital and in a span of 45 minutes renderedbeautiful compositions of saint poets like Tygaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Swami Dayanand Saraswati with effortless ease and flawless technique. Saumya is a bright student as well and is looking forward to a fine career in classical singing.

The former champions, Mumbai FC, riding on the twin strikes from striker Cletus Paul stormed to an authoritative 3-0 win against Kenkre FC in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15, played at the Cooperage ground on Monday evening. Paul showed good opportunism and netted the opening two goals in the first half before Allan Dias scored the

third late in the day to complete the win. Kenkre faced more embarrassment as they were forced to play the last 20 minutes of the match with a man short as referee Richard Dixon showed the red card to Yash Mhatre for using abusive language. Mumbai FC, the lone club from the city participating in the I-League, looked totally composed and had things very much under control. They did the bulk of the attacking and their defence did not come under much pressure as they took the match away from their opponents.

Having asserted their dominance, it did not take Mumbai FC too long to open the scoring as striker Paul fired them into the lead in the 15th minute. Paul once again showed his scoring touch by netting his and the team’s second goal in the 40th minute. Kenkre worked hard and played on gamely to get back into the game, but were unable to create many clear goal scoring opportunities. They were also unable to maintain their focus and with frustration creeping into their play they failed to maintain their

cool. Substitute Mharte committed a huge mistake and was sent off which added to their misery. Mumbai FC made optimum use of the advantage and added the third when Dias nailed the ball home in the 81st minute much to the satisfaction of his teammates. The next Elite Division match will be played on Saturday, November 1 between Dena Bank and G.M. Sports. Results: At Cooperage ground – Elite Div: Mumbai FC 3 (Cletus Paul 15th & 39th, Allan Dias 81st) beat Kenkre FC 0.

Maini shines on UK debut, finishes 2nd in BRDC F4 N

ORFOLK (England): Sixteen-year-old Arjun Maini made waves in his debut season in UK by finishing second in the BRDC (British Racing Drivers’ Club) Formula 4 Championship, missing the title by just three points. Bangalore boy Maini, who is mentored by former F1 driver Karun Chandhok, amassed 480 points over eight rounds, winning four races in the process. He also had five pole positions and six fastest laps to his name. A mixed performance (8th, 5th, 5th in three races) in the eventual champion George eighth and last round of the Russell. Both drivers comChampionship here over the peted for Lanan Racing. weekend stopped him from Reflecting on his maiden winning the title. with second in the championship. “I gave it everything in that race so I’m happy with my performance. It’s been a good journey, I’ve learned a lot and I’m ready now to move for-

ward. “BRDC F4 is an amazing championship. We’re so happy that we made this choice. We weren’t sure what we were going to do at the start of the year, but we definitely made the right call.” Chandhok predicted a bright future for his protege Maini, adding that they are eyeing a F3 seat next season. “He is a good learner and unlike many young Indian drivers who get complacent with success back home. He listens and always has a bunch of questions for me. He will be testing for some F3 teams very soon, let’s see how it pans out. By January there should be more clarity about what he will be doing next season,” said the UK-based Chandhok.

CHENNAI LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK AT HOME VS MUMBAI C 30

HENNAI: Humbled by a big margin in their previous outing, Chennaiyin FC have a chance to bounce back when they take on the star-studded but erratic Mumbai City FC in the 15th match of the Hero Indian Super League, here tomorrow. The Bojan Djordjic-led Chennaiyin were unbeaten in the competition before being hosted by Delhi Dynamos, who handed them a sound 41 thrashing. Mumbai, on the other hand, are struggling to find their rhythm and are third from bottom in the points table with a win and two losses, the most recent being a 0-2 defeat against NorthEast United on home turf. Plagued by injuries, Mumbai could be boosted by the return of star striker Nicolas

SPORTS

If French import Anelka plays tomorrow and manages to hit the stride, Chennai’s defence, which Delhi penetrated with ease in the previous match, would be in for another massive test and it

would be interesting to see how the likes of Mikael Silvestre tie him down. Chennai, managed by Italian World Cup winner Marco Materazzi, do not lack in attacking firepower either. Brazilian signing Elano Blumer, the youngest marquee player in the ISL who has played for Manchester City, has been a prolific contributer to the team’s cause, scoring in every match so far. But Mumbai have their own man in form in midfielder Andre Moritz, the joint leading scorer of the tournament along with Elano. However, unlike Elano, all his three goals have come in one match — against Pune City FC. He did not play the full 90 minutes against NorthEast United owing to a niggle but is expected to be back to full

fitness tomorrow. Adding to Mumbai’s strike force is diminutive Indian Subhash Singh, who has one goal to his credit so far in the tournament. Manuel Fredrich would form the core of Mumbai’s defence and the German’s task would be made easier if Nabi reports fit for the match. Mumbai’s marquee player Fredrik Ljunberg finally made an appearance in their previous match, coming out in the second half, but it turned out to be quite a disaster as he had to leave the field within minutes due to a thigh injury. It remains to be seen whether the Swedish midfielder would be risked tomorrow. Given that the two sides match up quite evenly on paper, an interesting contest is on the cards.

Younis wants to play in World Cup

Mumbai post eight-wicket win over BCB XI OLKATA: Bangladesh K Test discards came a cropper as Mumbai registered a thumping eightwicket win in a low-scoring affair in the CAB SK Acharya Memorial Challenger Trophy one-day tournament here today. Mumbai pacer Shradul Thakur (4/35) made full use of the JU second campus seaming wicket to be the wrecker-in-chief as BCB XI were skittled out for 138. Anamul Haque (0), Imrul Kayes (0) and Nasir Hossain (10) who were ignored for the Test series against Zimbabwe after their poor efforts against the West Indies, struggled against some quality seam bowling by Mumbai. Wilkin Mohta (2/22) and Saurabh Netravalkar (1/36) gave the initial before breakthroughs Thakur wreaked havoc, while all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, too, chipped in with an impressive 2/22 from his five overs. Mumbai comfortably chased down the paltry target as Bravish Shetty (22) and Sushant Marathe (22) put on 43 runs for the opening wicket before wicketkeeper batsman Aditya Tare and Nayar saw them through with 17.5 overs to spare.

ARACHI: Pakistan’s man of the match in the first Test win over Australia in Dubai, Younis Khan, is keen to play in next year’s World Cup despite the national selectors sidelining him for the one-day series against the Australians. Younis, who scored twin centuries in the Dubai Test, said he was ready to play in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand if the selectors put faith in him. “I just feel that the selec-

tors should not take into consideration age, position or colour while selecting teams. No matter what age a batsman is, if he is in form and has match fitness he should be selected to play in ODIs,” Younis said on Geo Super channel. “The idea should be to play the players in form. Age should not be a bar. If any player can serve Pakistan cricket in the World Cup he should be considered for selection. It is about playing the right combination for a match or event,” Younis said. Younis, who has become the highest Test centurymaker for Pakistan with 26 hundreds after the Dubai Test, said he was ready to play for Pakistan even in ODIs. “Playing for Pakistan has been the biggest high for me and I have not given up hope of playing in the World Cup,” he added.

I AM SORRY, WON’T DO IT AGAIN: SARITA TO AIBA SPORTS

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2014

N

EW DELHI: A remorseful L Sarita Devi has pleaded with the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to lift the provisional suspension imposed on her for refusing to accept her bronze medal in the Asiad, saying that she deeply regrets her outburst on the podium and would never repeat it. Sarita’s participation in the World Championships next month has been jeopardised due to the suspension imposed on her for refusing to accept the medal after a controversial semifinal loss in the Asian Games at Incheon. “I do accept that the incidents should not have happened and I deeply regret the incidents with a pledge that this will never happen again,” the former world and Asian champion has written in her reply to AIBA’s notice. “Realising my mistakes, I had immediately tendered an apology letter to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Organising Committee of the Asian Games 2014 and accepted the bronze medal,” she said. Sarita said her impeccable disciplinary record before the Asiad furore should be taken into account when her fate is decided by the AIBA’s disciplinary committee. “In my 14-year long career, I had never been involved in any act of indiscipline or misconduct both in the national and international arena. Being one of the pioneers of amateur women boxer in the world who participated in the first World Women Boxing Championship in the USA in 2001, I would like to plea to your good office to consider my case and pardon me for the incidents in Incheon Asian Games, 2014,” she said. Sarita also insisted that her actions on the podium were not

planned and neither were they instigated by her husband or the three ringside coaches, who have also been suspended by AIBA. “I would like to mention that my husband was unaware of the presence of the AIBA technical delegate and perceived everyone present as Asian Games organisers,” she said. “I would like to state that my conduct during the medal ceremony was not premeditated and was an expression of deep emotional feeling, for which I sincerely apologise once again,” she added.

“I hold myself responsible for my actions during the medal ceremony and I was not acting on anyone’s instruction. My action did not prompt anyone else to act in a similar manner during the event. The coaches did not influence me in any manner,” Sarita explained. She requested the AIBA to lift the sanction imposed on her. “I sincerely apologise once again for my conduct and request your good office to lift the sanction so that I can continue the game I live for and love most,” she added.

EW DELHI: The Sports Ministry today asked the newly formed Boxing India (BI) to work towards revocation of provisional suspension imposed by AIBA on L Sarita Devi and three ringside coaches by helping them in filing their replies to the world body. Sarita has been provisionally suspended for refusing to accept her bronze medal owing to a controversial semifinal loss at Incheon Asian Games. The suspension has jeopardised her chances of participating in the World Championships from November 19 in Jeju Islands, Korea. Three ringside coaches — Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal — were also provisionally suspended from taking part at all levels of competitions and meetings until further notice. AIBA’s strict view of her protest on the podium prompted the Sports Ministry, Indian Olympic Association and BI to hold a meeting today to chart out a future course of action. The meeting was attended by Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan, IOA President N Ramachandran and Secretary General Rajeev Mehta, AIBA representative from India Kishen Narsi, Sandhu and Sandeep Jajodia, the president of BI which is yet to get recognition from the government as well as the IOA. At the meeting, Sports Secretary

Sharan asked the BI to prepare the replies of the boxer and the coaches and ensure that the provisional suspension on them were revoked at the earliest. “The Sports Secretary took stock of the situation. He asked BI to prepare the replies of Sarita Devi and the coaches to present a collective stand before the AIBA. The sports secretary has assured all necessary help to Sarita and the coaches to ensure that the ban is revoked at the earliest,” Sports Authority of India Executive Director (Teams) Sudhir Setia said. “The players and the coaches are to file their reply to AIBA’s incident report. Boxing India is helping the player and the coaches in all respect, be it legal, psychological etc to prepare their reply. This reply will be ready and filed by tonight. The main aim of this entire exercise is to persuade AIBA to revoke the ban on the player and the coaches,” Setia said. Setia also said that Sarita and the coaches would not be filing for appeals to AIBA but sending their replies to the letter of provisional suspension sent to them. “They are filing their replies as required under the AIBA letter of provisional suspension. It cannot be an appeal as the suspensions are yet to be ratified. The boxer and the coaches are sending their replies separately,” he said.

Sumariwala slams AIBA, says Learnt from MS, Virat to play game that suits me: Uthappa it has no jurisdiction to ban him N N

EW DELHI: India’s Asian Games Chef-de-Mission Adille Sumariwala today slammed the AIBA for provisionally suspending him in Sarita Devi episode, saying that the boxing world body has gone beyond its “jurisdiction”. Sumariwala said that he was not at all concerned with the provisional suspension handed out to him by the AIBA after boxer Sarita Devi refused to accept her bronze medal owing to a controversial semifinal loss at the Incheon Asian Games. “Who is AIBA to suspend me? I have gone to Incheon Asiad as head of Indian contingent. I had done my duty to help out a boxer in my contingent in my capacity as the head on my country’s contingent,” Sumariwala, also the president of Athletics Federation of India, told PTI. “The AIBA has no jurisdiction at all to issue a provisional suspension on me. It was uncalled for,” he added. Sumariwala wondered the rational behind AIBA’s decision to provisionally suspend him. “I want to know my suspension from what, which event or competition. I am not taking part in any boxing

competition as an official in future. So, I am not concerned at all about this AIBA suspension. I have nothing to do with it,” he said.“I did not speak out earlier because that might have distracted the issue from India’s efforts to revoke Sarita Devi’s suspension. But now I have to speak out,” he added. He also said that he will not be filing any reply to the AIBA as will have to be done by Sarita and three other boxing coaches. “Why should I reply to AIBA? They have not charged me nor they had send anything to me informing about the so-called suspension. IOA is writing to International Olympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia about this,” he said.

EW DELHI: Robin Uthappa has come out as a completely changed batsman this season and the Karnataka opener attributes his consistent scores on “staying true to his skills” just like India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli. “I believe that I have evolved as a batsman. I have learnt enough about the game and I believe that there is no point in tweaking the ongoing process too much. You have to stay true to your skills. I have learnt this from guys like Virat (Kohli), Suresh (Raina) and MS. They have done what fits their game,” Uthappa, who won the coveted ‘Orange Cap’ during last IPL told reporters at Feroz Shah Kotla. In the capital to play the Duleep Trophy final, Uthappa termed his century against East Zone on a seaming track at Lahli as one of his most satisfying knocks. “Under the circumstances that we played, it was a challenging knock. The ball was seaming around and I fulfilled my role as an opener to hold one end up. Atleast I did it to the best of my abilities,” said the Coorgi lad. With World Cup not far away, Uthappa does not hide his desire to be seen in that elite group of 15 that will fly Down Under for the bigticket event. “I do want to be a part of that side and for that I keep performing. But I would like to concentrate on

what’s there in my hand.” Uthappa has also been keeping wickets in the IPL and was also seen honing his glovework once he finished with his nets. “I take my keeping seriously and has kept wickets in the IPL. I don’t mind doing it whenever my team wants me to do it.” A stint with Praveen Amre has certainly helped him become a better player and Uthappa agrees. “There is no harm if you seek professional help (Amre in this case) when you find a gap in your game. I trust him as I have known him for a long time now. “I now understand my technique better now. There are a certain adjustments that I made. I stay much stiller when the ball is being delivered. Also some technical changes regarding shoulder movement and maneuvering of right hand,” said Uthappa. “Earlier, I only thought about the impact that I made in a short time not thinking about what impact I can make if I don’t throw away my wicket. I understand that now that I can make a bigger impact even if it is at a slightly slower rate if I can survive and keep the scoreboard ticking,” said Uthappa. “I can tell you that nowadays I hate getting out even in the nets. I feel disturbed if I get out once or twice in the nets. I feel the practice is not complete and purpose is not fulfilled.”

admission to hospital. “We can confirm that Bucs (Pirates) goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot and sadly declared dead on arrival at hospital,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said on its Twitter feed.

Police later said there were seven people inside the house, including Meyiwa, when two suspects entered and another remained outside. “The incident happened at around 2000 SA time (1800

GMT) in Vosloorus,” said police who did not comment on some media reports that the shooting was sparked by a row over a mobile phone. “There was an altercation and Senzo Meyiwa was shot. The three suspects fled on foot after the shooting. “We can assure South Africans that we will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers to book. “A reward of up to R150 000 ($14,000) is being offered for any information that can lead to arrests.” Pirates, one of the most popular and successful South African football clubs, also confirmed that the player had been killed. “@Orlando_Pirates family has learned with sadness of the untimely death of our number 1 keeper & captain Senzo Meyiwa,” the club tweeted. Irvin Khoza, the club chairman, added: “This is a sad loss to Senzo’s family especially his children, to Orlando Pirates & the nation.” Meyiwa played for his club in Soweto Saturday and has been in outstanding form for the national team during recent 2015 Africa Cup qualifiers. The death of the national football team captain is the second tragedy to hit South African sport within three days after former world 800metre athletics champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died Friday in a car crash. South Africa team-mates Dean Furman and Andile Jali were among the first to react to the Meyiwa tragedy on Twitter. “Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain and friend Senzo Meyiwa. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this terrible time,” tweeted Englandbased Furman, who plays for

Doncaster Rovers in the thirdtier in the English league. “Just got a call and I was sleeping, but now I cannot sleep because of what I just heard,” tweeted Jali, who moved from Pirates to Belgium club Ostend this year. After many years in the South African football shadows, Meyiwa had a meteoric climb to fame with club and country. He displaced national squad goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs as first-choice at Pirates, the only South African side to be crowned African champions. And a recent injury to South Africa captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune gave Meyiwa a chance in the national team, popularly known as Bafana Bafana (The Boys). New national coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba not only promoted Durbanborn Meyiwa to replace Khune but also made him captain of a team that has been in the doldrums for some years. Meyiwa responded to his promotion by leading the team to victories over Sudan and Congo Brazzaville and draws with Congo and Nigeria, a country South Africa traditionally struggle against. He did not concede a goal in the four matches and if Souith Africa defeat Sudan in eastern city Nelspruit on October 15 they will qualify the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. He was also made captain of Pirates and helped the club defeat Ajax Cape Town 4-1 Saturday in a South African League Cup quarterfinal. Meyiwa gave a flawless performance and the only Ajax attempt that beat Meyiwa came from a penalty kick.
