here could not have been a worse nightmare for parents of the children studying in a top Bangalore school where a six-year-old girl was raped by two staff members. With the police on Tuesday proclaiming that the minor was in fact gangraped by two gym instructors and not by the skating tutor, parents are in a tizzy on whether to send their wards to a school where such a heinous crime took place. “We are unsure about what is happening. Something new unfolds every day. I don't feel safe sending my child to school yet,” said a worried parent. The latest claims by police have resulted even more anxiety among parents who are now looking for a safer haven for their kids. “It is odd because I don't know who was re-
ally involved and if they have been nabbed. Are there more?” asked another parent. The Bangalore police on Tuesday arrested the two gym instructors in the case. Bangalore Commissioner MN Reddi said, “This is a case of gangrape. The incident happened on July 3.” The police also ruled out the involvement of the skating instructor Mustafa, who was also arrested in the case earlier. Reddi said, “Mustafa was not present there at the time of crime. He was arrested because of circumstantial investigation, but he has now been booked for gross misconduct in another school.” The duo have been booked under section 376D of IPC, section 4 and 5 of POSCO (Protection of Child from Sexual Offences) Act. The school was re-opened on Monday for Classes 5 to 12. I will reopen for Classes 1 to 4 on Wednesday.

Rupesh is currently at a semi-private hospital at Vile Parle where people with economic constraints are given some concessions. Arvind Surve, whose family member has been admitted to the trauma centre, had similar experiences to share. “There was no drinking water in the water filter yesterday (Monday) and the air conditioner also keeps going off at times. The fans don't help. The mosquito menace is too much for us to bear,” said Arvind. he BMC-run Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital, Jogeshwari, has been fraught with issues since the last week, ranging from defunt air conditioners and swarming mosquitoes to a lack of staff, leading to patients waiting endlessly for their operations to be scheduled. As a result, quite a few of them have opted to be discharged and have shifted to other hospitals where they expect better services. One such patient is Rupesh Surve. This 33-year-old man was admitted to the hospital about ten days ago after he had a minor bike accident in which he fractured his right ankle. We were told that he would need to have a minor surgery as soon as the wounds healed. “The wounds healed within a week and we kept waiting for a surgery date. But they just kept telling us that they would let us know when the surgery could be done and went on dilly dallying. Meanwhile we saw the people around us who have been waiting for months to have their surgeries scheduled. So I enquired around and found out that the hospital does not have enough support staff for the doctors to be able to conduct surgeries. One doc-

On learning this disheartening news Rupesh's family decided that they want him to be discharged from this hospital. “We realised that my brother's surgery is not going to happen any time soon, so there was no point
keeping him simply waiting. We brought him to this trauma centre thinking that he will get good treatment at an affordable cost. But when there is no treatment being administered, why wait unnecessarily? We might as well spend some more money but get good and assured treatment for him,” said Siddharth. Pawar. They are insisting on their demand for reservation and quota in higher education and jobs. The state government recently announced extending a 16 per cent quota for Marathas and five per cent for Muslims in jobs and education ahead of the Assembly elections. However, internal bickering has now started within the ruling CongressNCP over extending similar benefits to the Dhangars. Senior ministers Madhukar Pichad and Padmakar Walvi have been vocal against including Dhangars into the ST category. According to tribal welfare minister Pichad, tribals fear that inclusion of Dhangars into ST category
will eat into their quota. However, tribal legislators, under the leadership of Pichad, have threatened to resign en masse if the Dhangars were included in the ST category. “Dhangars are not tribals. If the government includes them under the tribal category we will agitate. The government should not succumb to pressure exerted by the community,” said Pichad. Against this backdrop, Purke wrote a letter to Pawar vociferously opposing the quota for Dhangars. In his letter, Purke stated that in the recent Lok Sabha election, Supriya Sule won only by a narrow margin reportedly because of the Dhangar com-
munity's lack of support. In the Baramati constituency, the number of Dhangar voters are sizable, and so Pawar must not act under political compulsions. Purke's letter has created flutters in the political circle. The Dhangars constitute around 10 per cent of the total population in the state with an influence in more than 30 Assembly segments of western Maharashtra. Dhangars currently enjoy reservation under the Nomadic Tribe (NT) category, and are entitled for 3.5 per cent quota as per norms. However, the community members demand that their caste be included in the ST category, which enjoys seven

per cent quota. Moreover, since the NT category is not recognised at the central level, the community members feel that they have been deprived of jobs in Union government services.“We have decided to vote for the party which gets us scheduled tribe status," said Dhangar Samaj Arakshan Kriti Samiti leader Lalit Bandgra. The Samiti members began their protest at Pandharpur in Solapur district on July 15, culminating at Baramati on July 21. Since then, some members from all over the state have been camping at Baramati. BJP core committee members - state president Deven-
dra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in the Council Vinod Tawde, senior leader Madhav Bhandari and MLA Pankaja Munde Palwe - visited the protest site and expressed support. The Dhangar community has significant presence in 78 of the 288 Assembly seats, including Baramati and Madha. Dhangars in Maharashtra now get reservation benefits under VJNT (Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes), which they say, is not enough. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan recently said that the state government will have to consider views of all community leaders before taking a call.

embers of the Dhangar community will hold a protest march in Mumbai on August 1 in support of their demand to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the community. The protesters will be dressed in their traditional attire and would come to Mumbai with their goats and sheep to participate in the march, which will begin from Byculla and culminate at the Azad Maidan. Asking him not to act under political compulsions, deputy speaker of the state Assembly has requested NCP chief Sharad Pawar not to press this issue for political benefit. For a week now, a large number of demonstrators of the Dhangar community (shepherds by profession) has been protesting at Baramati, the hometown of NCP president Sharad Pawar and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seems to be in no hurry to get rid of the potholes across the city roads. The civic body’s pothole tracking website yesterday reported 3,742 potholes, out of which 2,936 have been repaired. (Right) Team ADC spotted some major potholes yesterday at the Dadar Flyover and Mahim. According to BMC norms, civic engineers are supposed to assign the pothole repair work to contractors within 48 hours of them being reported. The potholes are then to be filled within the next 24 hours.
EC yet to pay 4.61 cr to BMC Expenditure incurred on vehicles and fuel By Philip Varghese
“T
he Election Commission (EC) always teaches one to work sincerely, ethically and within the rules. But they themselves are not following their own ethics,” says Right to Information (RTI) Act activist Anil Galgali, who recently discovered through an RTI query that the EC has till now not paid Rs.4.61 crores
to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the expenditure incurred for vehicles and fuel charges. This was revealed as Galgali had written a query asking the BMC as to how much was the expenditure
on vehicles and fuel charges which was used by Election Commission during the last five years. In reply to the query, Executive Engineer Transport (city) Ashok Khairnaar informed Galgali that in the last five years, the BMC sent a total of 119 vehicles to Election Offices all over Mumbai. “Total expenses were Rs.4,61,32,878 on vehicles and fuel charges. Their office sent the bills to respective election offices from time to time but still the bills are not paid. The highest number of vehicles were sent
by City office - 95 vehicles and amount was Rs.3,13,96,635. The office at the eastern suburb sent 13 vehicles which billed around Rs.1,10,97,821 and then western suburb sent only 11 vehicles which cost Rs.36,38,422. All three departments till now haven't got the total amount Rs.4,61,32,878 from election office which was spent on vehicles and fuel charges. I am surprised at the attitude of EC office and expect the EC to pay this amount to BMC immediately and set a good example,” Galgali said.

We therefore direct Ravindra Singhal, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Thane city, to promptly look into the matter and take steps to find out whereabouts of the child and submit the report to this Court. We direct the respondents to place before us all the steps which were taken for investigation of the case on by July 30.” According to the petitioner, 24-year-old Naresh Prajapati, a labourer from
Mulla Baugh (Manpada), on August 21, 2013 his one year and nine month old daughter Manju was abducted while playing outside their home. When the couple suspected that their child had been abducted, they filed a missing complaint on the same day with the Kasarwadavali police station under section 363 of the IPC. Thereafter the couple enquired about the status of enquiry with the concerned police officer API Thorat, said Prajapati. The petition further said that on every visit, the officer used to inform them that the accused were arrested and released on bail and that their daughter was in safe
custody. Whenever the couple insisted that they needed physical custody of their child, the officer used to drive them out of the police station. Following this, he referred the matter to senior police officers but nothing happened, it said. The matter was then referred to the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, but there also besides recording statements nothing materialised. At one stage one of the investigation, a PSI informed them that their daughter had been traced to Hyderabad and they would require to shell out Rs 25,000 to bring her back, the peti-
tion alleged. The couple said that since they were unable to collect that much money due to their poor financial conditions, things remained status quo. However, they were able to collect Rs 17,000 and approached the inspector and requested her to take the case forward but there was no progress. The petitioner said that he addressed several complaints to senior police officers and the possibility of their collusion cannot be ruled out following which he was left with no other option but to approach the High Court. The grievance of the petitioner is that though his
child was kidnapped and a complaint to that effect was lodged with the Kasarwadavali police station, no steps were taken to find out the kidnapped child. Since more than six months, whereabouts of kidnapped girl are not known. Taking into consideration all aforesaid facts, the court directed Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Thane city to immediately look into the matter. The respondents in the case were State of Maharashtra, Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Senior Police Inspector at Kasarwadavali police station, API Thorat and PSI Smt Babul.

IMD expects ‘very heavy rainfall’ today A
n alert of 'very heavy' rainfall in Mumbai has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional centre on Tuesday, with the rains expected to intensify in the next 24 hours. "There is low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal and there is an outshore trough running from the Maharashtra coast to the coastline of Karnataka. This has strengthened the winds along the coastline and have further activated the monsoons," IMD, Mumbai director V.K. Rajeev told PTI. The IMD expects "very heavy" rainfall in Mumbai and the Konkan region over
the next 24 hours, he said. "We expect that the rainfall in Mumbai will exceed 7 cms and will remain in a range of 7-14 cms. There are, however, a couple of areas in Thane district and Konkan region which might witness showers upto 24 cms," Rajeev added. According to IMD records, in the 24-hour period till Tuesday from 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Santa Cruz recorded 48.3 mm rainfall and Colaba had 26.6 mm. Meanwhile, the Tulsi lake, one of the six major reservoirs from which Mumbai receives its water has started overflowing. It had begun overflowing last year from July 12, a civic official said.
As of today, water in seven major lakes — which supply water to the city -- is 4.99 lakh million litres (enough to last for about four months) compared to 11.48 lakh million litres last year, according to BMC records. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had announced a 20 per cent water cut earlier this month to cope up with water crisis arising due to 'poor rainfall' in the city last month. The civic body is expected to assess the latest situation of the availability of water on July 31, and further action will be taken based on the assessment report, a municipal official had earlier said.

hiv Sena MLA from Ovala-Majiwada has filed a complaint against a 40year-old female foreign national and her husband for trying to extort Rs 1 crore from his family under the threat of defamation. According to the complaint, Mary Louis and Sanjeev Sharma had contacted the secretary of the Yuvasena, Purvesh Sarnaik, a few months ago through Facebook saying that they would like to work for the Yuvasena. Mary, who claims to be from Australia, and Purvesh,
Continued from pg 1 « sending to Colombo through diplomatic channels, names Amir Zubair Siddiqui, Consular (Visa) in the Pakistani Mission in Sri Lanka as the main conspirator who was involved in a conspiracy with some Lankan nationals for carrying out terror attacks on the two consulates, the sources said. Repeated attempts to obtain comments from the Pakistani High Commission's Visa and Information sections failed as there was no reply. However, earlier, its Press Attache Muhammad Daud Ehtisham was quoted as saying that Pakistan and its state institutions are responsible entities and do not indulge in such activities. Siddiqui is not a new name for IB as his name had cropped up earlier in 2012-13 when security agencies picked up one Tameem Ansari, a frequent flier between Trichy and Colombo. Ansari was arrested after six months of surveillance in 2012. A small trader who sent, among other things, potatoes and onions to Sri Lanka, Ansari was in touch with Haji, a Tamil- speaking Muslim from Colombo. However, after his business failed, one
son of Pratap Sarnaik, met at a Mumbai hotel on May 17. At this meeting Purvesh learnt that she was 40 years old and, therefore, denied her entry. This news made her angry and she demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to defame the the Sarnaik family during the upcoming Vidan Sabha elections if he failed to produce the money. The complaint filed at the Vartak Nagar police station, Thane, states that he woman has also created a fake account in the name of his father Pratap Sarnaik to be able to contact the Sarnaiks' friends.
A senior police officer at Thane said, “We have registered an extortion case. The woman has not been identified but the Mumbai Cyber Cell has managed to track her email id and the phone number that was being used by the woman. The case was then transferred back to the Vartak Nagar police station. We are also investigating the nationality of the woman, to find out whether she really is Australian or not.” “The couple has not been arrested yet but a case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act,” added the police.
THE LeT-LANKAN ANGLE Haji allegedly introduced him to Siddiqi in the Pakistan mission in Colombo, and his second in command, Shaji. After reportedly brainwashing him, Siddiqi roped him in to take videos of the Nagapattinam port, the ships that berthed there, the topography and other dimensions as well as Mallipattinam, traditionally a landing point. His name again figured after IB, on a tip-off from its Malaysian counterparts, foiled an attempt by ISI to carry out terror attacks on the two foreign consulates in India. Sakir Hussain told interrogators that he had been hired by Siddiqui in Colombo as per the alleged ISI plans to conduct reconnaissance of the US Consulate in Chennai and Israeli Consulate in Bengaluru. The case was eventually transferred to NIA as overseas investigation was required into it. Hussain told interrogators that the Pakistani spy agency was planning to send two men from the Maldives to Chennai and that he had to arrange for their travel documents and hideouts. During interrogation, Hussain reportedly took the name of Siddiqui as his al-
leged handler and also said he had been chosen as he was engaged in human trafficking, making of forged passports and smuggling of fake Indian currency. Sleuths had recovered pictures of the US and Israeli consulates showing various gates and roads leading to the two premises, the sources said, and claimed that these pictures had been mailed to his alleged handlers in Pakistan and its High Commission in Colombo. Cyber signatures showed that the pictures were downloaded in a computer within the premises of Pakistan High Commission at Colombo and the same had been shared with Sri Lankan authorities, the sources claimed. Now, under MLAT, Sri Lankan authorities have been asked to share their probe details in the case. Under the treaty, both countries will provide assistance in locating and identifying persons and objects; taking evidence and obtaining statements; authorising the presence of persons from the Requesting State at the execution of requests; facilitating the appearance of witnesses or the assistance of persons in investigations,
DCP Raut and Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kala Gavit. For now the IPS officer is free from arrest for now, till July 31, when the period of interim relief ends. “The victim's statement will be recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, in the first week of August,” said Date. The statement, recorded under CrPC 164 in front of a Metropolitan Magistrate or Judicial Magistrate is deemed
authentic and is admissible in court. Following a complaint by the model, Paraskar was booked under IPC sections 376(2) (rape by a police officer), 376c (intercourse by superintendent of jail, remand home, etc) and 354(D) (stalking which interferes with the mental peace of a person or causes distress, fear of violence or alarm) at the Malwani Police Station on Wednesday. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
Man burnt alive in Thane By Priyanka Dhomse
A
48-year-old man was beaten up by his coworkers and burnt alive later at Spectra Motors in Sawarkar Nagar, Wagle Estate, Thane on Sunday at around 12 am. According to the police, there was a dispute between the accused and the victim over a monetary issue with regard to the records of a pay and park auto rickshaw stand. The accused have been identified as Jamal Shaikh (24) and Rony aka Bharat Koli (28), who was arrested by the police on Sunday and will soon be produced among others. Sri Lankan authorities were carrying out a probe at their end to fill in the gaps in the investigation being undertaken by India besides corroborating the versions of Hussain and another accomplice of his, Mohammed Hussain Mohammed Sulaiman, who has been arrested by Malaysian authorities who stumbled upon the plot when its Special Unit was probing money laundering and human trafficking cases. A Sri Lankan citizen, 47year-old Sulaiman is wanted in India for allegedly hatching a criminal conspiracy, acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention, possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or bank notes, terrorist acts, and raising funds for terrorist acts. He is considered crucial for the investigation. Sulaiman has told Malaysian authorities that he had received instructions to assist two men in the planned attacks on the consulates. The sources said that the apparent strategy being followed by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was to rope in Muslims from Sri Lanka for executing their plans to give credibility to the deniability factor that it was not involved in any way.

As per the information provided by the Wagle Estate police, the victim, Raju aka Rajendra Gulab Jagtap (48) was looking after a pay and park auto rickshaw stand in front of his house, and had hired accused Shaikh two months ago to look after the accounts of the parking space. From July onwards, the accused allegedly had begun malpractices in maintaining the account. The victim soon realised this and thus was beaten up by Shaikh and his friend Rony after an argument over the accounts. The two accused then burnt the victim alive
and fled the spot. “Rony is a local while Shaikh is from Uttar Pradesh and had came to the city two years ago in search of a job,” said A Kshirsagar, Senior Police Inspector from Wagle Estate police station. The accused have been booked under section 302 (Punishment for murder) and 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC. “Further investigation is on as accused Shaikh is absconding and our team is searching for him,” added Kshirsagar.

he Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has condemned the violence that erupted following the removal of a pro-Maharashtra signboard at Yellur village in Karnataka. “India is a country with religious, ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversities. AAP believes that stirring up violence in the name of language and state borders is condemnable. Often, violence is incited for political
gains and the result is that the aam aadmi (common man) suffers. This exploitation of emotive issues must stop," the party said in a statement here. “We appeal to all citizens to keep calm and not fall prey to divisive forces. We also appeal to the State of Karnataka to ensure that the police force exercises restraint in handling protests," the party added.
Last Friday, the Belgaum district administration had demolished a signboard at Yellur village near Belgaum which proclaimed that the village belonged to Maharashtra, triggering protests in Kolhapur, where Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses were stoned. Police also lathi-charged a group of pro-Maharashtra supporters who engaged in stone-pelting at Yellur.
CM: Cong-NCP alliance is ‘pucca’ This will help to garner secular votes and keep communal parties at bay
M
UMBAI: Confident that the Congress and the NCP will be able to sew up a "respectable" alliance for the upcoming Assembly polls in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday said the larger goal is not to split the secular votes to keep the communal parties at bay. He also sought to play down the "rebellion" within his government and hoped that senior Congress leader Narayan Rane, who recently resigned from his cabinet, will chose to "prioritise" the people of Maharashtra ahead of "personal ambitions". Chavan, who has been a Chief Minister for the last three and half years, hit out at Shiv Sena over one of its MPs trying to force feed a fasting Muslim, saying people of the state would have to chose whether they want to hand over the government to a party which "believed more in violence and intimidation than in democratic norms". Talking about pre-poll alliance, Chavan, an aerospace engineer-turned-politician in an interview to PTI said, "We have a seat sharing agreement in place. We will have it this time too, but it can be based only on mutual respect and cooperation". He said that in the end, both parties wish to work for Maharashtra, so there is no

JD(U) tie-up with Lalu’s RJD A
FEW years ago, Bihar leader Lalu Prasad Yadav had popular support. His party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), took over rule in the state. Today his party and himself have become a non-entity. And thanks to conviction by a court in a criminal case, he has also lost the right to sit in the Parliament. But strangely enough, Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar is seeking his help in the ensuing state assembly elections. It looks like the Nitish Kumar has become hopelessly desperate. His attempt to get Lalu Prasad to his side is like a drowning man clutching at a straw. He has not been able to, it is evident, realise that any tie-up with Lalu Prasad will not help his party in the state. He keeps cracking jokes, making loud optimistic speeches, but thanks to criminal conviction, he has become a non-entity. His party today will not be able to provide any help in winning elections in Bihar. In fact, any association with him may harm the JD(U) in the elections. Former Bihar chief minister and JD(U) senior leader Nitish Kumar himself does not seem to have much chance in Bihar. He is putting a brave face and posing a challenge to Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress, a cleaner party than the JD(U), was decimated by Modi magic. Instead of having personal hatred against him, he should have been supportive. A rally or two in Bihar by Narendra Modi is enough to get the BJP victory in the elections. People are likely to judge Nitish Kumar by the company he keeps...

T looks like the growing unease over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on burning issues of the day is getting to him. Last week, select journalists were called in for a debriefing session by no less than three ministers and all on the same day! Let’s not name the ministers because they wish to remain anonymous. It’s sufficient to say that two of them are cabinet ministers and one a minister of state. All three are known to be close to Modi. There was a strong note of protest in the tone and tenor of the debriefing. Why is the media going after Modi, the ministers wanted to know. Don’t journalists understand that he’s busy working? A prime minister can’t be expected to present himself to the media on every issue. Modi will talk when the time is right. He has to have something to say. He’s trying to deliver on some of his election promises. As soon as there’s something tangible on the ground, he will definitely meet the media. He came in on the promise of good governance and that’s what he’s concentrating on. Just wait, the journos were told. It’s interesting that this damage control effort happened just after two controversies involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Shiv Sena, rocked Parliament and played out on television. One was the ‘chapati’ incident at Maharashtra Sadan when Shiv Sena MPs were caught on video force-feeding a Muslim catering supervisor on Ramzan fast after they had vandalized the office of the resident commissioner. The other was a Telengana BJP MLA’s unfortunate remark questioning Sania Mirza suitability to be a brand ambassador for the newly-created state because she is a ‘daughter-in-law of Pakistan’. The second controversy was particularly embarrassing because Modi’s core constituency of young India slammed the BJP on social media for insulting a sports icon. Well, Modi has an opportunity to redeem himself when he speaks from the ramparts of Red Fort on Independence Day. Let’s hope he draws some red lines for members of his own party as well as his partners and reminds all those who have been shooting their mouths off recently that there will be no economic progress without social peace and stability. Communal polarization will destroy the development plank that won Modi his impressive mandate in 2014.

TANDUP comedian, now Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP from Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, is proving to be a source of huge entertainment for fellow MPs. According to colleagues, he keeps up a running commentary during Lok Sabha discussions for the benefit of those who sit next to him. He has a take on everything, a wisecrack for every speaker and pithy comments on the daily goings on in the House. But by popular vote his best crack so far has
mind where to seat its seniors like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. After all, both have been MPs much longer than these ministers and are veteran leaders. But the BJP does not have enough seats to accommodate both unless some of the senior ministers agree to sit in the second row. Sushma and Rajnath are obvious candidates for the front row. Party circles are wondering whether Gadkari will become the sacrificial goat and make way for his party elders.

Bhayandar subway cost escalates by 17 cr The project cost which was Rs 41.50 crore initially has now gone up to Rs 58.08 crore; innovative micro-tunneling system to be used in its construction allows trains to travel at their normal speed while construction work is on By Suresh Golani

ore than six years after the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) floated tenders for the construction of a sub-way joining the east and west side of Bhayandar having an estimated tag of Rs 41.50 crore, the project is now expected to touch around Rs 58.08 crore. The MBMC general body recently gave its nod for cost escalation in this project owing to several factors including an 11month delay in awarding permission by the railway authorities and the subsequent increase in the length of railway platforms. The sub-way is being constructed by Punebased Ghai Construction Limited (GCL), using the innovative Pipe Arch Method (Micro-Tunneling) – a technology which allows trains to travel at their normal speed while construction work is underway. The use of this technology has made the construction of the muchneeded subway possible which had been pending for the past decade after it was officially sanctioned by the erstwhile council in June 2011. “After repeated
tender contracts floated by the Public Works Department for the construction of the sub-way using the 'Box-Jacking' method failed to evoke any response from agencies for seven consecutive times, a soil investigating test was conducted by IIT Mumbai which revealed that soil in the area was very weak ruling out the possibility of construction by the normal 'Box Jacking' method,” confirmed Executive Engineer Deepak Khambit. Fresh tenders were then floated and the three-year contract having an estimated tag of Rs 41.50 crore was awarded to GCL on May 25, 2011. In its final stages of completion, the 70m long sub-way which is being constructed on the Virar end of the suburban section of the Mumbai division of the Western Railway, will facilitate movement of light motor vehicles (LMV) and will have a pavement for pedestrians. Currently, the east and west side of Bhayandar is connected by a lone flyover which is about three kilometers away from the railway station entailing a round trip of six kilometers.
Assembly (EMLA) constituency. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Raut defeated then sitting Congress MP Dr Nilesh Rane from the Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri Lok Sabha constituency by a whopping margin of 1.50 lakh votes. Rane happens to be the son of Congress Minister for Industries Narayan Rane. Raut was elected to the upper house of the state legislature on July 28, 2012 and his term as an MLC was to expire on July 27, 2018. Hence, any member getting elected in his place will effectively enjoy a term of just four years as an MLC. The electoral college for this MLC seat from the EMLA constituency has 289 MLAs. But with seven MLAs having resigned following their election to the Lok Sabha, the quota of votes needed by a candidate to win is going to be significantly less.

I am interested in doing Chartered Accountancy in India, yet the option of going to the US to become a Certified Public Accountant also exists. I am confused. How do I make a choice? —Yash Sinhal To study in India or abroad is a personal choice. To do CA in India, one needs to register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and appear for the qualifying examination to become a CA. You can find more details at www.icai.org. To pursue CPA from the United States, the candidate must pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination which is set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Typically the eligibility requirement is a US bachelor’s degree which includes a minimum number of qualifying credit hours in accounting and business administration with an additional one-year study. However it is preferred to acquire such qualification from the country you wish to settle in the future, as it helps in getting the precise education for the nature of the job, which differs from country to country. I am in the third year of my Bachelor's of Computer Application. I want to know what my career options are after this. —Rushika Jadav There are options such as MCA, MSC-IT/computer science, MBA (systems), which are related to your basic educational background, IT certifications from Sun, Microsoft, Cisco and so on can be thought of. If you intend to change your field, then mass media, hospitality, law, banking and insurance, are some of the other options where you can pursue postgraduate courses. You could also think of joining the defence, civil services or taking up a government job. Identify your ultimate career goal and then opt for a course or employment in the related field.

You are considering two career options which are different from each other. You can pursue animation with your studies or even after your graduation, as most of the animation courses are offered by private institutes. Creativity and innovation will be the key ingredients to become successful in this field. On the other hand, engineering is a technical field (which requires you to clear the relevant entrance exams) and will expect you to focus and open career avenues related to the same. Evaluate each option carefully and then decide.

Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab said, “Our mission is to save the world from all kinds of cyber-threats. We want to make the internet – the greatest innovation of our time – safe for everyone. And of course that means making it secure for our children, protecting them from harmful content and teaching them to use it wisely. This is the reason why we are starting this campaign in India: we want to reach students through their schools, educate them and increase their awareness of online
our children in the real world but also in the online world. In this context, I believe the Kaspersky Kids programme is a great initiative and will create better informed and more responsible Internet citizens of tomorrow,” Tendulkar said. Ryan Pinto, CEO, Ryan International Group of Schools said, “We are really pleased that Kaspersky has chosen to launch Kaspersky Kids from our campus. We will ensure that all our students across 16 states and 40 cities are aware of the essential dos and don’ts of being on the internet. Today almost all children, regardless of age, either play on their parents’ smartphones or access the internet on their own laptops, iPads and other devices – but they
rarely have any formal training about what to click and what to avoid. That’s why it is vital that children get a basic understanding of the principles of internet safety.” Schools will play a crucial role in making the programme successful and Kaspersky Lab plans to tie up with India’s top 50 schools by December 2014 and reach out to as many students and engage with them through periodic communication on safe online behaviour, new threats and virus alerts. By end of 2015, Kaspersky Lab wants to reach out to more than one million pupils and parents to maximise awareness. The Kaspersky Kids online newsletter contains safety tips, video tutorials, self-assessment tests for students and their parents to ensure they understand internet security. As part of the programme, Kaspersky Lab also plans to conduct contests involving parents, teachers and students, rewarding the winners with cool Sachin Tendulkar signed merchandise and Kaspersky goodies, including AV protection. India has the second largest internet base in the world and the second largest Facebook user-base after the USA and Canada. With more than 250 million internet users in India, of whom 110 million are mobile internet users, the country’s internet population base is expected to reach 519 million by 2018. Meanwhile Kaspersky Lab’s latest research on children’s internet usage preferences showed that in India about 46.6 per cent of the kids (under 18) have attempted to browse pornography. 17.2 per cent of kids have made attempts to download or access game sites in India and 11.9 per cent Indian kids of those surveyed have attempted to access sites that require payment by credit card. These findings are collated from data taken from Kaspersky Security Network, based on notifications from the Parental Control module in Kaspersky Lab security products. “This does not involve any personal information because we do not observe individual users. Instead this permits analysis of the types of undesirable content that children most often reach, giving percentages of visits across 10 different categories of websites. Because these statistics are collected anonymously we cannot know the age of the users in question but we can guess that when Parental Control modules are activated it means there are under 18s in the family. We can also identify location by country,” said Anna Larkina, Senior Web Content analyst, Kaspersky Lab. Traditionally, the categories that are considered undesirable for children have been Pornography (erotic materials), Violence and Drugs. The other seven on the list are illegal software, explicit language, weapons, gambling, anonymous proxy servers, payment systems and online games.

oung Anjaneya Mishra's debut book – 'Teenage Blues Parenting Clues' is a good attempt at bridging the divide and generation gap between parents and their teens. A student of the HR College of Commerce and Economics, Mishra has tried to help parents of young teens cope and understand their wards better. This is his take on how teens think and how parents can tackle them. The book is quite unique in its concept and Mishra has covered most issues that cause conflict between teens and parents like drugs, sexuality and goals among others. The book published by Jaico, though unique in concept, can drag and gets monotonous at times. Despite its shortcomings, the book will make an interesting read
for parents who have a keen interest in improving their relationship with their kids and getting to know them better.

n addition to the summer and winter, autumn, spring and rains. Indians have now acclimatised to a new season called the ‘admission season’. In this weather one gets to savour enticing advertisements from various private colleges imparting education in contrast with some slit throat cutoffs of elite nationalised institutes like the IITs, NITs, AIIMS, NLIUs, the list goes on. Since long, engineering has been the most preferred and ‘rest assured’ choice for a professional career. It has time and again been proved that engineers are highly versatile when it comes to seeking employment. India has witnessed technocrats getting into multifarious career ventures from creating a milk revolution, becoming a politician, an author, a cinematographer, a financial maestro, a cricketer or even a magician. Engineers of India have a huge spread in all verticals and across all horizontals. Getting an engineering degree was once a dream to achieve. But with the mushrooming of so many institutes pan-India, the story beyond engineering college is not very encouraging these days because lucrative jobs do not come automatically to the fresh engineers from many of these colleges. A very important question to be answered is why are unemployable engineers churned out year after year? Opportunity follows those students who select the right academic slot. “Choices are the hinges of destiny,” said Pythagoras. Especially when one is on crossroads in their career and the decision taken today decides the course of future life. Mechanical, mechatronics, EEE, electrical, computer science, IT or something else? There are a hundred plus varieties of engineering branches and sub branches available in the prospectus to select from. Deciding upon the right engineering branch is too tricky for both students and their parents. “It’s like medication; every medicine cures but this happens only when the doctor reads the symptoms correctly and prescribes the right medicine. Likewise all engineering branches lead to success – what is required is to have the right match.” Nowadays the most common method used to identify the engineering branch to apply for is to look at job statistics. This approach can’t be dismissed outright, but the pitfall is we make a major life decision based on guesswork and the future. Given today’s rapid advancements in sci-

« MENTOR’S DESK ence and technology, predictions of what the job market will look like a decade or even half a decade later, when the student graduates, are likely to be inaccurate. So it’s a better deal to stay in the present and create rather speculate future from the present. The results for JEE (main and advanced) are out and counselling sessions have started at various institutes where students will fill in their preferences and wait for destiny. But due care while making this choice is important for parents and students so that they don’t have to repent what they sow. Here are a few points to be kept in mind while attending counselling sessions and deciding what branch of engineering to opt for. 1. Student’s aim (job, higher studies, MBA) 2. Value of the college 3. Placement history of the college 4. Stream the college is known for
STUDENT’S AIM
Job If you are aiming for a core engineering job, then you can chose from one of the following branches:
Computer, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical & Chemical Information technology (sustainability dependent on government policy/ market dynamics) If you think you might want to join the services – IAS, IES, IFS – then you should focus only on streams like electrical, civil or mechanical engineering. Computers does not figure as an elective subject in the entrance examinations of the IAS, IES or IFS.
Higher Studies If you wish to pursue your higher studies in India, then choose from any of the conventional streams like electrical, electronics, mechanical, etc. But in case you are desirous of pursuing higher education abroad, then you may opt for unconventional streams such as biotechnology, pulp and paper, metallurgy, etc, where there is scope for research. MBA If you want to do an MBA, then you don’t have to be sceptical about the stream but chose the college keeping its brand image in mind, which would be of help during campus placements.
VALUE AND PLACEMENT HISTORY OF THE CHOSEN COLLEGE
The student should extensively research the placement history of the college before going for counselling.
STREAM THE COLLEGE IS KNOWN FOR
Some of the IITs and the streams they are famous for are listed below: a) IIT Roorkee – Civil b) IIT Kanpur, Delhi – Electrical c) IIT Kanpur, Bombay, Delhi – Computers and mechanical The most prestigious NITs are: a) Warangal b) Suratkal c) Trichi d) Allahabad
The Second Rung NITs are enumerated below: (i) Kurukshetra (ii) Jaipur (iii) Surat (iv) Napur Best of luck to all successful students. May they get the stream and college of their choice.

I
did my Bachelors degree in Mass Media majoring in advertising. I hardly ever studied. I just used to learn everything by-heart until I entered into my first year of Mass Media. Then I started understanding and learning because the method of education was a lot more experiential rather than ‘mugging up’. My college is a very old one, R D National College, Bandra. I did two years of science, Computer studies and then BMM. Being an old college, the architecture was more practical then aesthetic. Also, it was a blend of old meets new. So half of the college was built half a century ago, and the new structures comparatively recently. But what it lacked in aesthetic beauty, it made up in spirit. I used to feel good when I entered the premises and I think that feeling is very important for any institute. One of the ways an institute can do that is through its architecture. An institution is a place of broadening minds. Today when I get invited to judge college competitions, I’ve noticed that newer institutes lack that special vibe. Space is a problem in this city. But educational institutes today have very block like, practically-oriented architecture where space has been utilised to the maximum, leaving little space for imagination. And isn’t imagination an important ingredient in broadening minds? That way I’ve been very fortunate; my college, located in the heart of Bandra, was spacious, open and not cluttered. Yes, I was ragged. My seniors made me dance like a dance bar girl in the canteen on top of a table. I enjoyed it though as all my ragging seniors were girls. I was nicknamed ‘chammiya’. My professors were from the media industry. They were unconventional in their approach to academic teachings and very cool. Studies were more practical and project based. We were made to ‘do’ as opposed to sit and ‘mug’, so I enjoyed studies thoroughly. I remember this one class in creative writing by Savvio Baretto, a radio jockey who was a cool professor. He asked us to report to carter road instead of our class room for one of his sessions. He asked us to walk and look around individually in silence, open our senses and minds and write a story about something we saw or experienced during that walk. My story was for the lack of a better word ‘crap’, but the lessons I learned that day stay on with me till date. And isn’t that what education is truly about? In the earlier days, gurus used to teach their shishyas under trees and forests, because of lack of infrastructure; but also to keep them connected with their surroundings as opposed to keeping them and their minds caged in the four walls.
I travelled to college on my bike. That’s where my love for bikes started. I used to carry a helmet wherever I went. In my year book, there’s a caricature drawing of me holding a huge helmet. I used to pick up another friend, who has now become a close friend in my journey of life too, and we used to bike-pool our way to college. My college life started from that moment, as I picked him up and chatted about yesterday’s happenings, as opposed to communicating on social networking applications, which in fact make us more anti-social. College life was the best phase of my life. I learned, not only by studying but by experiences and made friends who have become my soul mates. That’s another thing, friends made in college or school can truly be counted as friends for life; because of those many hours of common interests and time spent together. In a way, college invariably teaches one a lot about life, friendship, relationships. When we were in Bandra, we mostly hung out at the famous Jai sandwich stall or at Barista. But we couldn’t afford coffee there. So we would buy one espresso amongst ten of us and sit there; use their inhouse guitar and sing. My education has helped me in the nonacademic sense. Nothing I learned from books ever came in use. But the teachings of our professors, the project work they made us do taught a lot. The films we made ourselves in college on a shoe string budget taught us more than any books and that was my education and I wouldn’t trade it for any MBA or Phd.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2014
‘WASTE MANAGEMENT MODULE’ T
ata Power’s nationwide energy and resource conservation movement, Club Enerji, has been working towards spreading the message of judicious use and conservation of energy across the country. In its seventh year, Club Enerji recently announced the launch of a ‘Waste Management Module’ as a part of its Resource Conservation Programme. The Resource Conservation Module lays strong emphasis on saving water, fuel, paper and electricity, and has successfully imparted knowledge on fuel conservation, water management and energy conservation to lakhs of students. The objective of the module is to educate students about the repercussions of waste dumping on the environment, and its impact on the quality of soil, air and the ecosystem as a whole. The module aims to provide a platform to more than two lakh students to share and expand their understanding, thereby, bringing about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce generation of waste and increase efficient waste management in the country. Speaking on this initiative, Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, stated, “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s decision makers, and it is vital to mobilise and educate them with the knowledge that will help bring about an important

change. By mobilising the youth with the knowledge to effectively treat waste, Club Enerji aims to spread the message further to their families and reach out to the communities at large. The module also encourages students to form their own mini clubs in their societies to reach out to more citizens.” This year, to make the module a bigger success, a mass drive will be undertaken by the students. The students will collect plastic bottles and recycle them into t-shirts for Club Enerji’s ‘Energy Champions’. By educating young students about the ramifications of waste dumping, the module aims to inspire young minds to inculcate basic precautionary steps in their daily lives to combat this problem. While a lot of initiatives focus on waste reduction, effective waste management of the existing piles of waste around the world remains a topic of concern. The Waste Management Module addresses the root cause of the problem – ‘how waste is generated, how it impacts the environment, its longterm consequences, and the small steps that can be taken to curb and treat it effectively’.

HAPPY EVER AFTERS Pooja Dhingra (27) is the founder of Le15 Patisserie and Studio Fifteen Culinary Centre in Mumbai, and most importantly is a dynamic businesswomen with a passion for life. Naressa Coutinho finds out how this little French Patissier made it big in her profession
M
eet Mademoiselle Pooja Dhingra, the city’s most renowned pastry chef and owner of Le 15 Pâtisserie. She is the young baker de Paris, who we call ‘inspiration’. It took Pooja only a month of Law school to realise her true calling as a Pâtissier. The switch was inevitable and from that moment on it was no turning back. She graduated from the world’s best culinary school, Le Cordon Bleu, Paris and returned to the Indian subcontinent to share her world-class sugar treats and tricks. Do you enjoy baking as much as devouring and if yes, is this the career cut out for you? “I've always loved baking,” says Pooja, “But never thought of it as a viable career option till I was studying Hotel management in Switzerland. As part of our training programme, we had to work in a pastry kitchen and that's when I decided that I wanted to pursue baking as a career. I enrolled into Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and began my training to be a pastry chef. Baking for a living can be challenging and so one must be sure of their choice before streamlining into this career. “Dessert preparation requires one to be detail-oriented and extremely patient. What gets you drooling at first is not the familiarity of the smell or taste but the appearance of a well-crafted dessert. The senses come alive in an almost dream-like succession of sight, smell and taste, thus a chef must aim at creating visually appealing delicacies. “You can either work in a professional kitchen under a chef or you can go to a culinary school,” says Pooja. While you would not necessarily need a baking or pastry-making degree to become a Patissier, you can always assist in a bakery shop or hotel and learn on the job. Practical experience in this field is given due weightage and students are encouraged to improve theoretical knowledge under the guidance of established cooks. Institutes of Hotel Management is the most common path taken to pursue a career in the hotel industry but Pooja also encourages aspiring chefs to look internationally for baking certification, “You can go to Le Cordon Bleu (campuses world-

wide) or The Culinary Institute of America to acquire a certification in baking.” The highlight of this career option is that pastry chefs are always welcomed and our country is only just beginning to get a taste of dessert therapy. “The pastry industry,” says Pooja, “Is booming in India and this is the best time to be a part of it. People are open to experiments and their palates are evolving. One must be creative, innovative and unique to leave a mark in the field.” With numerous sugar dens and franchises springing up in the city, you may be reluctant at first to venture into a business of your own but it is relatively easy to create your own niche in the market. This would obviously depend on the popularity of your creations and brand development. You may initially start off as an apprentice of junior chef in a bakery, restaurant or patisserie; gradually develop a good business acumen and eventually go on to start your own sweet shop. Some chefs may even go on to become food bloggers, writers and critics if they develop a good palate and knowledge of the industry. In fact, Pooja often conducts workshops and classes in big corporate houses and her own little Studio Fifteen Culinary centre which is a great way to stretch your busi-
ness and endorsement arms. Citing the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a pastry chef, Pooja says, “It's a creative and rewarding job. You get to be a part of the most memorable events and special occasions in people’s lives. Moreover, the market is huge and there is space for everyone. However, a pastry chef will have to embrace long working hours and a poor pay as compared to other industries.” That brings us to the question of how viable a career option it is from the remuneration perspective. Can baking help make a living? Pastry Chef Pooja brackets a range between Rs 8,000 and Rs 35,000 as the monthly income of a practicing chef. But again this is subject to your popularity, client base, service and resources. In case of a business, a chef should develop people management skills, an eye for perfection, pay attention to hygiene and sanitation and innovative marketing plans. Social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter are the easiest and quickest ways to promote your bakery business. Pooja’s ingredients for sweet success, “To become a successful pastry chef, it is important to have patience, creativity and passion. Decide what you want to achieve and set goals for yourself. Be honest and extremely dedicated in your work and dealings!” The Culinary Institute of America 1946 Campus Dr, Hyde Park, NY 12538, United States Contact-+1 845-452-9600 Website-www.ciachef.edu/

JOB SATISFACTION OR MONEY?
The argument between job-satisfaction and money has been an unending debate. It is very rare to find a job that gives you both. We asked youngsters which one they’d pick if they had to select one! Definitely job satisfaction. Your work is something you do all day and more. It’s with you even when you aren't actually working. If I didn't like what I did, no amount of money would help me survive it for more than a few months. Lucky for me, I get both where I work- the challenges that keep me motivated as well as money that let's me get by and more. —Mahek Virani, Product quality analyst
he Maharashtra government has planned to build a Shivaji statue in the middle of the Arabian Sea at a distance of 1.2 km from Raj Bhavan and 2.6 km from Nariman Point. This statue will be the world’s largest and will cost around Rs 1,900 crore as per the latest tender submitted on July 22. The government has taken this step to raise state pride. But is beautifying the city from outside enough? Rs.1,900 crore is a gargantuan sum of money which can be utilised to better the city. Nowadays life in Mumbai is so miserable! It’s even worse for people who
live in slums. Potholes on roads, long traffic jams, overflowing dustbins, crowded local trains, dirty roads, gutters full of garbage which leads to water logging every season, etc. These are just some of the problems faced by citizens every day. There is no proper sanitation system for the city waste. It all just flows into the Arabian Sea. This has resulted in polluted water in the sea which hinders even fun on the beach. All the garbage thrown into the sea resurfaces around the coastline. Before making the statue in the sea, the government should clean it first so that even Shivaji Maharaj could feel proud standing in a clean Arabian Sea. The government should form an action plan to solve these problems rather than seeking to gain political and personal profit by constructing this statue.
If I had to choose, I’d choose job satisfaction any day. If I'm not happy doing what I'm doing the money will make no sense. If I earn less but go back home happy it's worth the effort I have put in.

Voice of a small town girl By Reshma K R, Jai Hind college
I want to fly high Explore the earth and sky But comes a voice from the air “You are a girl bound to get married some day, do not dream too high” Life in the dream city starts at midnight I want to take a stroll in the moon light Again a voice stops me “You are a girl, think what people say You are bound to be indoors all day”
I enter the lanes with a guy Everyone knows we grew up together Yet the voice screams at me “Who’s going to shut the mouths of people?” Some stop me at the doorway Some midway I’m labeled uncivilised and naive For the dreams and goals that I nurture Yet I dream, I live and I relive For it’s my life and life goes on.
I think I’d pick money and make the job I’m doing satisfactory by constantly doing more. You can constantly add value to what you do, whatever it is, by improving on work quality. I would definitely pick money. —Irfan Morbiwala, Event Management
I would pick money because I need it the most now and I think generally too, youngsters today, thanks to the commodity markets in an all time boom, are probably willing to do work they may not necessarily like but if it pays, then surely they'd go for it. There is just so much stuff these days! And the ads do a commendably good job of creating demands for things we don’t really need. For most brands, the target is the youth. Be it cola companies, clothes, coffee, chocolates, cosmetics, bikes, cars, you name it. The pull is so strong towards owning and possessing things that I think youngsters are willing to forgo the satisfaction part of it, at least in the short run. —Srilakshmi Kurup

the centenary celebrations of ICAR and achieve more in the next 14 years than what they have over the last 86 years of the existence of the premium agriculture research body. "'Per drop, more crop' can be our mission statement," he said, while noting that India is still dependent on import of edible oil and pulses despite being an agrarian economy and efforts need to be made to become self-sufficient. He emphasised upon the need for taking scientific research to fields and suggested setting up of radio stations by agri-colleges and universities to create awareness among farmers. The farm growth target cannot be achieved unless farmers' income is increased, Modi said, adding that the government's policies therefore should focus in this direction. Modi also talked about the need to address the challenge of taking farm research from 'Lab-to-Land' by making efforts to convince farmers about efficacy of new farm techniques in simple ways.

Target Rs. 1100
Shriram Transport Finance reported in-line PAT of Rs 3.1bn (down 10.2 % YoY) for Q1FY15. Business growth remains subdued (AUM up 4% YoY), but management is confident of a revival in H2FY15. NIMs on AUM re-bounded 8bps QoQ to 6.54% even as securitisation remains low (Rs 1.7bn in Q1FY15). Asset pressures persist with GNPL/NNPL rising by 6.6%/3.5% QoQ, though the pace of accretion has slowed. Given SHTF’s premium franchise and a likely revival in H2FY15, valuations at 1.8x FY16E BV appear attractive. Maintain BUY. AUM growth subdued at 4% YoY; NIMs rebound QoQ: Disbursements in the used CV segment stood at Rs 70.7bn (Rs 66.6bn in Q4FY14), while new CV disbursals surged 39% QoQ to Rs 4.0bn. AUM in the new CV segment was down 61 YoY/11% QoQ and now comprises just 10.4% of total AUMs. NIMs on AUM bounced back 8bps QoQ to 6.54%. Securitisation in Q1FY15 was Rs 1.7bn though management expects this to move up going forward. Overall AUM growth is likely to be back-ended (H2FY15) driven by high growth in the HCV segment. Pace of NPL formation declining; cost management aided profits: GNPL/NNPL increased 6.6%/3.5% QoQ though the pace of accretion to NPLs seems to be declining. However, in percentage terms, GNPL/NNPL decreased 12bps/5bps QoQ with PCR comfortable at 79.1%. Credit costs are estimated to range from 180-220bps. Overall operating expenses were under control with employee expenses declining. The employee count has declined by ~6% QoQ due to natural attrition. Valuations reasonable: While SHTF’s near-term operating performance would remain subdued due to muted CV demand, valuations are reasonable (11x FY16E P/E and 1.8x FY16E P/BV) given its strong franchise and an impending recovery in the CV cycle. We maintain BUY with a target price of Rs 1,100.
Emkay calls a ‘Buy’ on Granules India CMP: Rs. 603
Target Rs. 885
Granules Q1FY15 results (vs. expectations) - Revenue at Rs3.1bn (vs. Rs2.8bn), EBITDA at Rs528mn (vs. Rs457mn) and Adjusted PAT at Rs229mn (vs. Rs163mn). Strong growth in FDs, PFIs and APIs continues, Auctus contribution at Rs260mn for the quarter with a net loss of Rs22mn. EBITDA margin improvement by 329bps yoy on account of higher utilization and better product mix. FDs contribution (standalone) at 38% v/s 34% yoy. We believe the improvement in business mix, increased capacity utilization and therefore higher margin trajectory would continue. Maintain Buy with a revised TP of Rs 885 Improvement in business mix continues; Margins higher at 17.1%: Granules reported very strong 36.23% on the back on good growth across all segments and with help of Auctus pharma acquisition. On a like to like basis (excluding Auctus) sales growth reported was still strong at 24.8%. 38% of standalone sales are coming from FDs, 26% came from PFIs and 36% from API. This compares to 34%, 30% and 36% for FD, PFI and API in the corresponding quarter of the last year respectively. 69% of standalone sales came from US, Canada and Europe against 65% sales during the first quarter of previous year. EBITDA margin improved by 329 basis points compared to the corresponding quarter of the last year due to higher capacity utilization and better product mix. Auctus contributed Rs261mn to the topline during the quarter with an EBITDA of Rs22mn, but with a net loss of Rs29mn in this quarter. Granules plans to invest about Rs750mn to Rs1.0bn during this year towards CAPEX which includes normal CAPEX of around Rs300mn. Expect business improvement to continue; Auctus turnaround key: We believe Granules’ story of business mix improvement, higher capacity utilization, better geographic sales mix and in turn higher EBITDA margins has just begun. As highlighted in our initiation report (dated 8th July, 2015: Treading the right path) we believe Granules as a company is seeing a change which would lead to better profitability and higher Return ratios over the next couple of years). We believe Auctus acquisition and its turnaround into profitability in FY15E remains a key to our analysis. We are building in Rs 2.0bn from Auctus in FY16E with an EBITDA margin of 15% from the business. We also believe Omnichem JV will be a significant contributor to sales by FY18E and more so to the profitability being a higher margin business. We continue to believe Granules’ operational efficiency gives it a strong foothold in most molecules it has presence in. Valuations: We believe the stock would generate healthy returns to investors both on the back of strong EPS growth and improved target multiples going ahead. As of now, we maintain our target multiple of 12x on the stock but we believe re-rating possibilities would materialize once we see continued operational performance in line with our expectations. We value the stock at 12x FY16E EPS of Rs73.7 for a revised Target Price of Rs 885 (Rs 773 earlier).

sset quality continues to be a cause of concern for the banks with overall Gross NPA ratio rising from 3.26% as on March 31, 2013 to 3.85% as on March 31, 2014, says Care Ratings in a report. The banks under study sold assets of around Rs.10,000 crore (P.Y.: Rs.500 crore) to Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARC). Assuming, these assets sold were part of the banks’ books, the Gross NPA ratios would be higher by 30 bps. The Gross NPAs of the Public Sector Banks (PSBs) saw an increase of 38.2% while that of the private sector banks was comparatively lower at 13.6%. According to the report the “Improvement in economic environ-
ment is expected to reduce the stress on the asset quality of banks and reduce the pace of NPA addition, which in turn is expected to improve profitability of the banks. However, the improvement would be gradual and would reflect in the second half of FY15. The Gross NPA ratio is estimated to be marginally higher at around 4% by end of FY15 as against 3.85% as end of FY14.” The profitability of the public sector banks was largely impacted on account of slowing economy leading to weakening of income profile, pressure on margins and higher provisioning on account of weakening asset quality and interest reversals on NPAs with large addition of NPAs during the year. On the other hand, the private sector banks continued to show sta-
ble growth in income and were able to maintain profitability and asset quality. On the capital adequacy front, levels for the select banks continued to be comfortable during FY14. However, going forward, the banks especially public sector banks would require to raise additional equity in order to meet the more stringent Basel III norms and also maintain a cushion over the regulatory minimum. As regards Credit and Deposit Growth, Care believes “With the economic growth expected to pick up to around 5% to 5.5%, the credit growth is estimated in the 15% 16% range, while deposit growth is estimated at around 14% to 15% during FY15 in tandem with the credit growth.”

‘Eid’ Sales Disappoints Mumbai Retailers By A Business Reporter
E
ven as Muslims across the city were celebrating 'Eid Ul-Fitr' yesterday, local traders who generally witness brisk business during the month of Ramzan, especially from the penultimate week when festival shopping picks up, have this time registered a 25-30 % decline in
sales compared to last year. Customers usually flock to markets during the last days of Ramzan to shop for festive goods, and business for garments, jewellery as well as food items peaks as the celebrations near. However, according to city traders, business was not as usual this year as rising prices of essential commodities have dampened 'Eid' shopping, reports PTI. "Every year, we have a steady inflow of customers..Both men and women come to us to shop for clothes for the occasion of Eid. This is the only period when we can raise the prices of our goods marginally knowing that customers will shop, not giving a second thought. But this
year, our business has gone down by about 30 per cent, inspite of us giving discounts on our clothing," Moiz Lokhandwala, owner of Jazz International, a prominent ready made garment store in South Mumbai's Mohammed Ali Road, said. People have probably started giving more importance to their basic necessities rather than splurging on Eid shopping, which they used to until this year, Lokhandwala added. Adil Mapari, owner of an imitation jewellery shop in Bhendi Bazar area of South Mumbai said that women have been 'cautious' in their approach in buying jewellery this time. "Women regardless of their social status have been coming to shop for imitation jewellery a few days prior to Eid from ages. This time it has been a little different. Women were still found busy buying jewellery, but with a cautious stance. Sale on expensive items hasn't registered a high turnover this time around," he said. Meanwhile, customers are complaining that though Eid comes only once a year, they have not been able to shop at will, due to rising prices. "We try and save money from our monthly expenses so that we can use it to shop during the festival of Eid. But from the last few months, high prices of vegetables, meat and the ever increasing college fees of our students have tossed our monthly budget out of proportion. We were thus unable to shop at will this year," Sherebanu Juzar, a customer said.
tween 10.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. and the competitive bids should be submitted between 10.30 a.m. and 12.00 noon. The result of the auctions will be announced on August 1, 2014. The stocks will qualify for the ready forward facility, says an RBI press release adding “The underwriting of the Government Securities under auctions by the ‘Primary Dealers’ will be as per the “Revised Scheme of Underwriting Commitment and Liquidity Support” announced by the Reserve Bank vide circular RBI/2007-08/186 dated November 14, 2007. Bids for underwriting of the Additional Competitive Underwriting (ACU) portion can be submitted by ‘Primary Dealers’ from 10:30 AM up to 12.00 noon on July 31, 2014 on the Reserve Bank of India Core Banking Solution (E-Kuber) system. The Stocks will be eligible for “When Issued” trading for a period commencing from July 30, 2014 – August 1, 2014 in accordance with the guidelines on ‘When Issued transactions in Central Government Securities’ issued by the RBI, the release said.

Kharif Crop Sowing Picks Up In East Vidarbha
Though there was an inordinate delay in monsoon over Eastern Vidarbha with a dry spell in June, rains in July have helped farmers to go in for sowing, drawing them out of the drought-like situation looming over the region, according to agricultural experts. Soyabean, Cotton, Tur pulses and Paddy are the main crop in this part of Maharashtra comprising Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts. In this month, about 10 % of soya sowing was carried out in the first round since rains were not widespread but in patches. A big area was under dry patch earlier but now sowing of cotton, pulses has resumed. However, Paddy transplanting was little delayed in this region, experts said. When contacted, State Agriculture Officer Archana Kadu told PTI that the total area meant for cultivation is about 4,83,000 hectares out of which sowing was done in 3,47,000 hectares in the region.

India tottering at 313 for eight, need 47 runs to avoid follow-on
S
OUTHAMPTON: India still needed 47 runs to avoid the embarrrassment of a follow-on after pathetic shot selection by some of the top-order batsmen, which allowed England to tighten their grip on the third cricket Test here today. At stumps, India were precariously placed at 313 for eight, with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni waging a lone battle with a gritty half-century. Almost all the Indian batsmen got starts but failed to convert into a big score which is required while chasing a mammoth first innings score. India are still 246 runs behind England’s first innings score of 569 for seven. At stumps Dhoni (50 batting) and Mohammed Shami (4 batting) were at the crease battling to keep India in this Test match with two full days to go. James Anderson (3/52) and Stuart
Broad (3/65) hunted in pair while Moeen Ali (2/62) was a beneficiary of poor shotmaking by a couple of Indian players. It was terible shot selection that brought about the downfall of Rohit Sharma (28) and Ajinkya Rahane (54), both of whom looked set for long haul. Rohit after a 74-run stand with Rahane was guilty of charging down to part-time off-spinner Ali failing to clear Stuart Broad at mid-off. Rahane, who scored a gutsy halfcentury after a fine spell from Broad in the pre-lunch session, mishit a half-tracker from Ali to be caught by substitute fielder Sean Terry at midon. Rahane hit five boundaries in his 113 ball knock and his dismissal proved costly in the broader context of the Indian innings. Even Virat Kohli (39) looked like hitting some form before he nibbled at an awaygoing delivery from his nemesis Jimmy Anderson to be caught by Alastair Cook at first slip. Skipper Dhoni curbed his natural
instincts to play a subdued game and added 58 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (31), who was the dominant partner. Jadeja, as usual, batted in his flowing self, hitting six oundaries in the process before the second new ball did the trick. Anderson got one to swing back into the left-hander

trapping him plumb in-front. Twice Dhoni took risk during his 103 ball knock. Once when he dispatched Moeen Ali’s long hop over mid-wicket for a six and the other time while hitting Broad over extra cover to complete his 31st Test half century. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (19) got his
first below-20 score in the tournament and it was left to Dhoni to carry on the battle of avoiding follow-on. The post-lunch session started with Kohli and Rahane looking to build a partnership. But they could only go as far as 48 runs before India lost another wicket. This time it was the big one of Kohli, who had until then, fought hard with patience and determination before Anderson accounted for Kohli.Rohit then walked to the crease, getting his first chance in this series. He started well, rotating the strike with Rahane, as Moeen Ali (1-37) was deployed from one end. Rohit used his feet well against the part-time spinner while Rahane was watchful yet scoring at a decent pace. They got the scoreboard ticking again and soon celebrated their 50run partnership, the mark coming off only 78 balls in the 61st over of the innings. Two overs later Rahane celebrated his half-century, another sterling effort after the hundred at Lord’s. Brief Scores: England 1st Innings 569/7 decl; India 1st Innings 323 for 8 in 102 overs (A Rahane 54, M S Dhoni 50 n.o.; J Anderson 3/63, S Broad 3/65)

Ishant’s absence has hurt us in this Test, says Agarkar M
U Mumba players converge to trap a Patna Pirate player. U Mumba won 36-33 for their third win in four games in the final game of the Mumbai leg to remain on top of the table in the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League at the NSCI Stadium.
UMBAI: Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar today said missing out on Ishant Sharma's services in the ongoing third Test at Southampton has hurt the team in the ongoing match. "Obviously, you want a form player to play throughout. You don't want the guy to miss out on any cricket when he is in form. It has hurt them a little bit and plus it was a good pitch. As long as India bat well, they will do okay in the third Test," Agarkar said at the launch of Zaheer Khan's company ProSport. Ishant was ruled out of the third Test against England due to an ankle injury after a match winning performance at Lord's. Senior India bowler Ashish Nehra hoped his Delhi team mate could be back in action in the remaining two matches.
"For any bowler picking up seven wickets in one innings is great. When a bowler is in form, it is always good for the team and the captain, especially in a five Test match series. Injury is something that he can't help. If India does well in this Test match, he will be available for the next two Test matches," Nehra said. Agarkar said this tour would be good for the young crop of players as they would gain experience out of it. "They don't have the experience of bowling in the overseas condition yet. They have played a lot of one-day cricket but Test cricket is different. They have been impressive so far in the series, specially Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) and then Ishant's match winning performance. So good signs if they can carry on the way they are at the moment," he said.

‘GLASGOW SHOW WILL CHANGE PERCEPTION ABOUT WEIGHTLIFTING’
Admitting that Indian Weightlifting was known for doping in the recent past, national federation president Birendra Prasad Baishya today said the spectacular show by lifters in the Commonwealth Games here would bring a change in the perception towards the sport in the country. Basking in the glory of lifters winning 10 medals (3, 3, 4), two more than 2010 in Delhi, Baishya said that his federation has realised its motto of "winning medals with honour". Weightlifting exceeded expectations as it has turned out to be one sport which has given a large chunk of medals in the Commonwealth Games.
Britain’s Prince Harry joins photobomb craze
HARPREET FIRES SILVER
Vijay makes shock exit
Harpreet snatches silver, Manavjit bronze as shooters dominate By Philem Dipak Singh

Britain's Prince Harry and Prince William play 5 a side football game during a visit to a Coach Core project at Gorbals Leisure Centre in Glasgow, Scotland on Tuesday. Coach Core was launched by Prince William.
WELLINGTON: Britain's Prince Harry has followed his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II into the photobomb craze, giving the thumbs up in an image of acclaimed New Zealand rugby sevens coach Gordon Tietjens at the Commonwealth Games. Just days after the queen was snapped beaming in the background as Australian hockey players Jayde Taylor and Brooke Peris took a selfie, the 29-year-old prince popped up as Tietjens was being photographed at the swimming pool.
LASGOW: Unheralded Harpreet Singh clinched silver while the seasoned Manavjit Sandhu claimed a bronze as Indian shooters continued to make an impact by adding two more medals to India's collection on the sixth day of competitions in the 20th Commonwealth Games here. While Harpreet and Manavjit stole the limelight with their medal winning feats, Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar turned out to be a disappointment by making a shock exit in the men's 25 m rapid fire pistole event. Harpreet survived two rounds of nerve-wrecking shoot-off and brushed aside a penalty point docked on him to claim silver in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event on a day when the Indian grapplers also assured themselves of at least three silver medals. The 33-year-old Harpreet from Haryana, who topped the qualification round, hit 21 times on the target in the six-shooter final which had eight rounds of five shots each. Harpreet had won two gold in 2010 Commmonwealth Games in Delhi -- 25m center fire pistol singles and 25m center fire pistol pairs events. With the addition of two more medals, india's overall medals tally swelled to 28 with seven gold, 13 silver and eight bronze so far but they slipped to seventh position in the

medal's standing. Australia maintained their position on top of the table with 89 medals, which includes 31 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze medals. They are followed by England (2724-24), hosts Scotland (13-8-12), Canada (10-4-12), South Africa (9-78) and New Zealand (8-8-11).
It is the gold which only counts. But I would say silver is still good, a medal is a medal anyway. HARPREET SINGH Winner, Silver in the 25M Rapid Fire Pistol Event Manavjit bagged a bronze in the men's trap event as shooters continued to do the bulk of the medal shopping at the Games with a tally of 13. Manavjit finished third in the semifinals after hitting 13 of the 15 targets.
He then beat Michael Diamond of Australia in the bronze medal match. The other Indian in the fray, Mansher Singh was sixth and last in the semifinals as he hit just 11 of the 15 targets.

The strong Indian contingent faced a heart-breaking moment when Olympic silver medallist marksman Vijay Kumar made a shock exit in the qualification round of the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event. Vijay shot a total of 555 points in the two qualification rounds to finish seventh and miss out on a place in the final round. The top six in the qualification round qualify for the final round.

On Tuesday, the President took time out and wrote congratulatory messages to shooters Jitu Rai, Gurpal Singh, Gagan Narang and weightlifter Vikas Thakur for winning medals at the Games in Glasgow in their respective disciplines. LASGOW: India put up a valiant fight before going down 2-4 against world champions and title holders Australia in their third group match of the men’s Hockey competition at the 20th Commonwealth Games, here today. Living upto their reputation, Australia build on a two-goal burst in the space of two minutes and were set to go into the breather with a 3-0 cushion before India pulled one back at the fag end of the first half. India managed to regroup themselves and put up a stronger defence in the second half, where they conceded one and scored one at the National Hockey Centre here. Chris Ciriello (14th minute, 49th), Simon Orchard (16th) and Jacob Whetton India's captain, Sardar Singh passes during match against Australia at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth (26th) were the goal scorers for Games in Glasgow, Scotland on Tuesday. Australia won 4-2.
Australia, while Rupinder Singh (34th) and Ramandeep Singh (48th) sounded the board for India. After two easy victories, it was supposed to be a real test for the Indian team and coach Terry Walsh’s boys didn’t fare too badly against the Kookaburras, who had thrashed them 0-8 at Delhi four years ago. India started on a positive note as they invaded the rival semicircle but some clever defending from Australia kept them at bay. Australia, however, didn’t take long to assert their supremacy as the 2010 Champions scored twice within a space of two minutes to push India on the backfoot. Ciriello drew the first blood when he converted their second penalty corner while a minute later Orchard scored a field goal when he capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot
home from close range. India struggled to gain possession of the ball after that as Australia kept their rival defenders busy. In the 26th minute, Whetton made good use of a defensive lapse by Rupinder outside the semicircle as he sent the ball to the left of the post, beating P R Shreejesh on the way as Australia led 3-0. Two minutes from the breather, India earned a penalty corner and Rupinder redeemed himself when he sent one hovering over the defenders to help India go into the break with a 1-3 deficit. India showed a lot of purpose in second half as they created opportunities but failed to execute them in time. In the 48th minute, an opportunist Ramandeep brushed off two defenders and dived in a shot to find the inside of the post as India reduced the difference to 2-3.

Theresians hold Companeroes 1-1 Companeroes Sports Club’s fine winning run came to a halt as they were forced to share honours with Theresians Sports Club, playing out a 1-1 draw in a Premier Division match of the 11th BWFA Football league 2014, conducted by Bandra West Football Association under the auspices of the MDFA and played at the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao municipal grounds. Both the goals came in the second half, with Ameay Dubey scoring for Companeroes and Jeff Pereira netting a late equaliser for Theresians. After three impressive wins in the earlier rounds, Companeroes faced a strong challenge from Theresians, a team of youngsters, and had to settle for a division of two points. Companeroes struck early in the second half when striker Ameay Dubey after receiving a pass from Daniel D’Souza moved swiftly into the box and comprehensively beat Theresians goalkeeper Jay Archer, who was outstanding during the entire match, with a rasping shot. Theserians fought back with plenty of determination and managed to restore parity when Jeff Pereira headed home.
MSLTA’s foray to spread tennis in tribal areas MU MBAI: Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association has started an initiative to spread the game into tribal and Naxaliteinfested interiors of the state and has already trained 22 youth to not only play the game but also coach children from nearby areas. The Kaushalya Vikas Tribal Tennis programme's aim is to bring the tribal youth into the mainstream of the society by educating them in tennis coaching skills and officiating, according to MSLTA official Sunder Iyer. Some tribal youth, including four girls, have been selected by the ATC from 6 districts of the Vidarbha region - including a few from Gadchiroli - and were trained by Arjun Sutar and Kapil Chutele, both All India Tennis Association-recognised coaches for around 8 hours a day. MSLTA provided requisite kit, equipment and technical support for the training and the ATC office took the responsibility of taking care of the lodging and boarding for these candidates, said Iyer. The initiative is the brainchild of a team comprising MSLTA treasurer Iyer, ITF Level 3
tutor Hemant Bendrey, Manoj Vaidya (chief coach of MSLTA), MSLTA member Prashant Sutar and Additional Tribal Commissioner (Nagpur) Dr Pallavi Darade. Among the lot is Umesh Gedam, an unemployed tribal youth from a small hamlet in Chandrapur district who has got job offers from Pune, Hyderabad, Nagpur as a coach. Gedam is one of the 22 tribal youth who have job offers in various cities across the state and the list includes seven others from the Naxalite-infested district of Gadchiroli and others from the districts of Gondia, Bhandara, Wardha, Chandrapur, Ramtek and Nagpur. The common string binding them is that they have successfully completed a one-year diploma in tennis coaching conducted by MSLTA and the Additional Tribal Commissioner's Office, Nagpur, and also a Level 1 All India Tennis Association certification, according to Iyer. Having not seen a tennis ball or a racquet or shoe in their lives prior to the one-year coaching stint, today they could hold their own in competitive matches, Iyer said.
