“S

hiv Sena has offered its support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It is now up to the BJP to decide on whether they want to accept our support or that of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). All this talk of Sena

bowing before the BJP leadership is nonsense”, remarked Sena MLC and spokesperson Dr Neelam Gorhe while speaking to ADC yesterday. However, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and Sena MLAs will not be attending today's swearingin ceremony of Chief Minister designate Devendra Fadnavis. Sources disclosed that the decision on whether or not to join the government has been left to party president Uddhav Thackeray to decide. An angry Sena has retorted that it will not withstand constant humiliation and demanded a honourable deal. Likewise, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray too has decided not to attend the swearingin ceremony at

Wankhede stadium. To make matters worse the Sena has called off its internal meeting to decide on whether to join the BJP government and has asked its MLAs not to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Although the senior Sena leaders still prefer

sitting in the opposition benches, some have now warmed up to the proposal of joining the government. Speaking to media persons yesterday outside Matoshri, Sena MP Vinayak Raut remarked that the BJP was constantly trying to humiliate the party leadership which has not gone down well with the party MLAs. When asked whether the

Sena offers support to BJP, however, the decision has been left to the BJP, whether to accept it or not

party leaders and legislators will attend the swearing-in ceremony, he shot back: “Why should we attend the swearing-in? Our MLAs feel that the BJP should give us due respect.” Gorhe added that the party president was observing the situation very seriously. Continued on pg 5 «

Six new fire engines biting dust in Mira-Bhayandar Thanks to callous attitude of senior officials, under-equipped brigade waits for fire fighters to be registered with RTO

By Suresh Golani

I

n another classic example of civic apathy and gross negligence towards public safety, six brand new fire fighting engines are lying idle and biting the dust in Mira Road for the past couple of months. Reason, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is taking its own sweet time to submit documents for vehicle registration to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This despite the fact that the present fleet of fire engines is inadequate for the twin-city that is developing both vertically and horizontally at an extremely fast pace. At present, there are three operating fire stations (Silver Park, Bhayandar and Uttan) in the Mira-

Bhayandar region which spreads across an area of 79.4 square kilometres and has a populace of more than 10 lakh. Apart from two water tankers, an ambulance, a rescue van, two pickup jeeps, the 100-strong fire fighting team has an existing fleet of six fire engines which includes two mini fighters and an advanced Turntable Ladder (TTL). Ideally, there should be one fire fighting unit for an area with a population of 50,000. The local BJP unit led by Rohidas Patil met municipal commissioner Subhash Laakhe, seeking his immediate attention on the issue which was directly related to the safety of the people. Renunciation in Action A

ction is the insignia of life. The law of life proclaims that none can remain without performing activity. Everyone is made to act helplessly according to one’s own inner temperament. Yet, if you choose to remain idle you lead yourself to destruction. Nature draws your attention to this law. Observe the stagnant pool and the running brook. Where water stagnates it turns filthy, dirty. Whereas running water is clear, pure. Learn the lesson from nature. If you are to succeed in life, be prosperous and peaceful, you must adopt the principle of running water. Follow their line of action. The river keeps moving. Overcoming all obstacles. Ever progressing. It never stops until it reaches the ocean. So must you pursue the path of action until you reach the abode of Truth. The philosophy of Vedanta highlights the gospel of karma action. Emphasises the importance of fulfilling your obligatory functions in life. The scripture warns that even to maintain your body you must be active. If any part of your body remains inactive for a period of time it loses its strength and vitality. Your body needs to be kept in constant repair. You must exercise daily. But people detest the idea of physical exercise. Instead, they choose to in- Swami Parthasarathy's daughter-disciple Sunandaji

dulge in sensual pleasure. They do not seem to realise that even enjoyment of sensual pleasures needs proper maintenance of the physical body. The neglect of physical exercise would prove detrimental to your material and spiritual wellbeing. Hence, the first spiritual lesson Swami Vivekananda gave out to his followers was: Go, play football! Vedanta insists on work, work and work. Equally so, it glorifies renunciation. There is an apparent contradiction. How can action and renunciation go together? This doubt goes when one understands the deeper import of the gospel of work. In fact, real work is founded on renunciation. Renunciation of the ego. Which is work performed without the egoistic feeling, ‘I-amthe-doer. I am the sole architect of all that I do.’ Real work is turned out when the body plunges into action while the mind is attuned to an ideal set for it. A true worker is one who pours out his efforts for a higher cause beyond his selfish interest. And does it without an egoistic arrogation of doership. That is the spirit of renunciation to be practised. Such work commands success and prosperity concurrently with peace and bliss. You can practise it in your home, in business, in society, everywhere. There is no

need to retire to the forests for living a life of renunciation. The idea of working in a spirit of renunciation has confused people. Even today this concept is not understood. Much less appreciated as a way of life. People either become attached, entangled in their work or cowardly escape from it. You must realise that action is inevitable. You cannot avoid your obligatory functions. In the epic Mahabharata a great battle was fought between two royal forces. Arjuna was a warriorprince leading one of the armies. He aimed at destroying unrighteousness and resurrecting righteousness in the country. The stage was set for the battle to commence. At that crucial moment Arjuna wanted to withdraw from the scene. The warrior declined to fight. He shrank from his obligatory duty. It was then that Lord Krishna gave Arjuna the sermon of the Bhagavad Gita. He preached the necessity and art of right action. How action embraces the principle of renunciation. He advised Arjuna to renounce his egoistic feeling and fight the battle impersonally for the welfare of the people. Empowered by this knowledge Arjuna fulfilled his obligation as a warrior and won the battle. Extract from The Eternities: Vedanta Treatise by Swami Parthasarathy. Vajpayee’s prediction comes true

Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had predicted in 1980 in Mumbai that BJP would lead the country and state when he had said, "Bharat ke paschim ghat ko mandit karanewale mahasagar ke kinare khade ho kar mai ye bhavishywani karane ka sahas karat hu kee, andhera chhatega, suraj nikalega, kamal khilega." This year in 2014, the lotus bloomed in the country and the state. When the BJP ministry takes the oath of office in Wankhede Stadium today, a big lotus will bloom in the nearby sea.

How one boy fooled the Indian media for two years

For two whole years an man from Kerala has managed to fool the Indian media, falsely claiming that he was a top scientist at NASA. It all started in August 2012 when news reports in Malayalam newspapers and TV channels showcased young people celebrating the success of P V

Arun, one of their own. The top newspapers in the country then interviewed the 27year-old and ran articles on him and his work, after he managed to convince them that he had been selected to join the US space agency after it relaxed its citizenship conditions. Arun was quoted saying he was "thrilled at being accepted as a research scientist." He also said that he was studying at the prestigious MIT and was soon off to explore "extraterrestrial elements with the use of remote sensing" with his revered spacial expertise. The Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) felicitated him and his efforts. Arun even got the position of a lecturer at the Royal University of Bhutan university by showing the English media’s coverage about him. It went so far that just this month, a newspaper reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to know about Arun from

Home Minister Rajnath Singh and invited the young scientist to a private meeting. According to the report, Modi even told Arun that the doors of the country’s space

research establishments would always be open for him. Finally Arun was exposed just this week through the efforts of Jayanath Jayanthan, the superintendent of police, telecommunications, in Kerala who is in charge of a social media group called 'Netizen Police'. Jayanathan said as a child Arun

always wanted to work in America. While other friends were getting lucrative offers, he did not want to lie that an Indian company had offered him a job, so he told friends about NASA. Working in NASA perhaps was his dream. The story was picked up by media, many fantasies added to it and Arun became a hit.

A windowless plane With newer technological advances coming to the fore every day, we came across this interesting one about a windowless plane. The world's first windowless plane is all set to take off soon. A British developer will soon test this plane that allows passengers to see what's going on outside. The tiny windows, that otherwise provide a very framed view of the outside, would be replaced by full-length screens allowing constant views of the sky and space outside.Passengers can switch the

view on and off according to their preference, identify prominent sights by tapping the screen or just surf the internet.Using OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, the thin and bendable screens will blend with the fuselage and surfaces such as seatbacks optimising space and reducing the weight of the aircraft.Weight is a constant issue on any aircraft with over 80 per cent of the fully laden weight being the aircraft itself along with its fuel. With every one per cent reduction in weight the approximate fuel saving is 0.75 per cent.

eadership of the Mumbai unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has virtually hijacked today's swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his cabinet. According to party sources, only 1,000 passes have been earmarked for VVIPs. Whereas the number of party VVIP leaders itself is around 1,500. Most of the thousand odd passes have been issued to celebrities. Enraged party leaders and workers have threatened to stage a dharna outside the Wankhede Stadium gates if they are denied entry passes. Moreover, sources disclosed that following the negative publicity from the media, a senior would-be minister has cancelled VVIP passes for media houses as well. Entry passes for general public has also been cancelled. Sources disclosed that the Mumbai unit leadership has hijacked the issuing of VVIP

Sudhir Mungantiwar passes which was essentially entrusted to the state party unit. The dilemma before the state leadership is regarding senior party leaders and other top leaders who will arrive in the city for the swearing-in ceremony. The list of invitees and other dignitaries is around 35,000 to 40,000. Prior to taking oath, Fadnavis will visit the statue of Sardar Vallabhbahi Patel near Worli sea face and offer his homage

to the leader on his birth anniversary. Speaking to newspersons here, senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar disclosed that the three-day inaugural session of the 13th legislative Assembly will commence from November 11 instead of the earlier planned date of November 4. He said that this was being done taking note of the public holidays on November 4 and November 6. On the first day, Governor C Vidyasagar Rao will administer oath to the protem speaker which is most likely to be senior PWP MLA Ganpatrao Deshmukh who will later in turn administer oath of membership to the remaining 287 MLAs. Following this, the Governor will address the joint session of both the houses. On the last day of the session, the house will elect the Speaker and thereafter Fadnavis is expected to move a one-line resolution of the house expressing its trust in his government.

Lotus blooms in Maha Continued from pg 1 « Earlier BJP general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy ruled out the possibility of Sena MLAs taking part in the swearing-in ceremony. He however added that the talks with Sena leaders is on in an amicable atmosphere and added that there has been no outcome as yet. Reacting to Rudy's statement, Gorhe stated that the Sena takes Rudy's statement seriously. Meanwhile, speaking to media persons here senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar disclosed that Chief Minister designate Devendra Fadnavis personally spoke to Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, his wife Rashmi Thackeray and also to MNS president Raj Thackeray. Devendra Fadnavis is all set to become the BJP's first ever chief minister of Maharashtra. It may be recalled that in 1980 former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had made the famous quote that the spell of darkness will fade away and the lotus will

T

he Mumbai police on Thursday arrested a person for raping a mentally challenged lady by threatening her with dire consequences. The accused identified as Shahabaz Khan was arrested from P L Lokhande Marg area of Chembur. According to the police, Khan had been raping the 31-year-old lady for a few

months. The girl is Khan's neighbour, the police informed adding that the girl's father one day while returning after work found Khan and the girl in a compromising position. “On October 25, the victim's father came home at around 11 pm and saw that his room's door was half open. As soon as he entered the room he saw Khan forcing himself on his daughter,” said Bhagwat Sonawane,

senior inspector of Tilak Nagar police station. Seeing the girl's father entering the room, Khan pushed the latter aside and fled, added Sonavane. After speaking to the victim, her father learnt that Khan had been raping his daughter for a few months. Subsequently, an FIR of rape was lodged at Tilak Nagar police station against Khan. Meanwhile, the accused has been remanded to

police custody and the police will be interrogating him to find out whether he had done such acts in the past. The police suspect that one of Khan's friend might also have participated in raping the girl in the past. The reason for this is that some residents of P L Lokhande Marg had told the police that in the past on several occasions they had seen another person with Khan entering the girl's house.

The deceased in his dying declaration said that he was regularly harassed by his wife which made him commit suicide By A Staff Reporter

T

he Sessions Court on Thursday acquitted a 21year-old woman from the charges of abetment in the suicide of her husband. She was charged with IPC 306 after Sainath Unay (22) set himself ablaze by pouring kerosene over himself post a fight with his wife. The couple resided at Muktinagar Kashinath Patelwadi, Govandi. Saithnath and Kajal Unay got married on December 21, 2011 and there reportedly were tensions in the marriage. On February 3, 2013 after a

fight, Sainath attempted suicide. He was taken to Kasturba hospital, Ghatkopar, where he gave his dying declaration in which he said that his wife used to fight with him, and threatened him that she would file false cases of dowry and harassment against him. He alleged that she would not do household chores. He died four days after the incident. The mother of the deceased confirmed Sainath's harassment story. But due to lack of any direct evidence or eyewitness in the case, the accused was acquitted. Kajal is mother of a two-year-old kid.

Six new fire engines biting dust... Continued from pg 1 « chronic shortage of fire stations that make the rescue response time high, a Gap Analysis Survey conducted by the Maharashtra Fire and Emergency Service Department ( advisor to the state government about fire safety) in 2011 found the need for seven additional fire stations and enhancement of the existing fire fighting infrastructure. Subsequently three more fire stations were built (Navghar, Kanakia and Bhayandar (W) and six new fire fighting engines were

purchased by the MBMC. However, thanks to the lethargic and insensitive attitude of civic officials in getting the vehicles registered, not only the fire engines are lying idle but the fire stations too are in a defunct stage. Attributing the delay to various technical factors mainly due to the imposition of model election code of conduct twice in the state, deputy civic chief Dr Sambhaji Panpatte said, “After some technical glitches, the vehicles have now been insured and the process to register the vehicles will be completed in a few days.”

six-member Air Force team successfully completed a swim around Mumbai in 49 hours and 44 minutes on Thursday. The team completed the extremely tough swim in the anti-clockwise direction, against the current. The Delphinus team of the Air Force Adventure, led by Wing Commander Paramvir Singh completed the swim covering a distance of 286 km

in a relay swimming format. Wing Cdr Singh said, “It was a very challenging swim as it was against the current and it took a toll on our strength. After swimming for minutes, we realised that we were at the same spot or were going back with the heavy tides. Of course, the fear of the jelly fish was at the back of our minds. The worst challenge was crossing the dirty creeks at Mira Bhayandar and Thane. Suddenly some dirt would prop up in front of

our eyes and we'd have to change course, focus and concentrate.” Team Delphinus comprised Wing Commander Singh, Sergeant G Narhari, Sergeant A K Patel, Sergeant S Sriharim, Corporal Aneesh Singh and Leading Aircraftman V Tokas. It is the first team swim around the city, covering the eight light houses and is the first to complete this circuit in the anti clockwise direction, against the current.

very year, between November and April the following year, flamingos are seen at the Sewri Bay, Uran and other creeks in Navi Mumbai. This year however, they have reached Uran, but are still being awaited at the Sewri Bay. About 15,000 flamingos migrate to the Sewri Bay every year. But the fear is, because of the pollution in the waters and the garbage being dumped, in a matter of a few years, they may not be seen there any more. The construction of the Mumbai transharbour link appears to be another major reason for their disappearance. Asif Khan, programme officer of the Bombay Natural History Society (BHNS), said, “The flamingos that are in Uran now are greater flamingos and the ones that come to Sewri are lesser flamingos. Ponder awhile… “Trust your instincts, and make judgements on what your heart tells you. The heart will not betray you.” — David Gemmell

She was fearless, bold and took dangerous decisions N Indira Gandhi’s death anniverO sary today, it would be appropriate to recall some of her accomplishments. The Blue Star which scotched Sikh separatist movement for ever and the liberation of Bangladesh-occupied by Pakistan — were two of her bold achievements. And a shocking undemocratic decision by her was the imposition of emergency. This was a big minus point of her rule. The nation was shocked by her decision. the press was muzzled, thousands of people who opposed her undemocratic move were jailed. She did not have any sympathetic concern towards most members of party. She used to frankly say they remained in the party only so long as she could win elections for them. If she did this, they would cringe and fall before her. If she could not, she very well knew they would drop her like a red hot cake. She was a realist, never a dreamer. She had years of training in politics under her father Jawaharlal Nehru. She used to be with him when he went abroad on assignments. And during the freedom movement, Nehru used to write to her about his thoughts. It was this training that made her run the Congress party in a successful manner. It also helped her take quick decisions on vital matters of the state when she became the Prime Minister. Her assassination by a Sikh guard in her house caused a riot against the Sikhs. Blood flowed in Delhi and the Congress rulers of the time, including Rajiv Gandhi, turned a blind eye to it. It was natural her fearless rule would attract a violent end to her life.

t was an accidental meeting with a Military Police officer that led us to the house of death in Delhi in 1984. We had witnessed on the evening of Oct 31 the first bout of anti-Sikh violence that followed Indira Gandhi's assassination. We were near the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in south Delhi where the prime minister was declared dead after being shot by two Sikh bodyguards. A mob fury against the Sikh community quickly enveloped the city, with frenzied supporters of known Congress politicians attacking innocent Sikhs and their property. Reporter Jagpreet Luthra and I saw a Sikhowned bus set on fire and Sikh-owned shops getting looted at the Kidwai Nagar market, a stone's throw distance from AIIMS. "Maro Sardaron ko!" The cries were chilling. The atmosphere was frightening. Police were nowhere in sight although they existed in hundreds near the AIIMS. In any case, they made no effort to stop anyone. Jagpreet quickly took off her 'kada' and put it in her purse. She didn't want anyone to know she was a Sikh. It was the first time after the holocaust of 1947 that Sikh identity became an invitation to death. But with the nation's focus riveted on Indira Gandhi's assassination per se, no one seemed to really know the extent and depth

of the mounting violence against Sikhs. It was not the age of technology. Most journalists in most media houses were busy with political stories. But everyone knew something was gravely wrong. It was close to Nov 1 noon that my UNI colleagues Dipanker De Sarkar, Rajiv Pande and I chanced upon the Military Police officer near the Delhi Cantonment railway station where a young Sikh lay dead, close to the tracks. The officer told us to visit the Delhi Police mortuary to know the full extent of the savagery. "Why are you wasting your time going around the city?" Professionally, I am glad we acted on his advice. As we entered the mortuary at Subzi Mandi, we saw a man bringing a pile of dismembered bodies on a wheelbarrow. He would later tell us that he picked them up near the New Delhi Railway Station. Placed all along the corridors of the mortuary were many more bodies - of Sikhs waylaid in various parts of the city and brutally killed, most of them not even knowing what their crime was. If I recall right, I counted 172 or 173 bodies - in several rows, neatly placed one after the other. That was when one of the policemen whispered, pointing to a large dimly lit room: "Go there and see." What we saw was bone chilling. Piled up shabbily like a mini mountain - like sacks of

food grain in a warehouse - were bodies after bodies, of men and women, most of the dress on the victims drenched in blood. Some bodies had no clothes. A strong stench hit us all. I recall Dipankar rushing out to throw up. There was no way we could count how many bodies were stuffed there. The doctor in charge of the mortuary, L.T. Ramani, calmly shared with us the statistics. The story we filed for UNI an hour later was the first to tell the world that hundreds - yes, hundreds - of Sikhs had been slaughtered in Delhi by Congress-sponsored mobs to avenge Indira Gandhi's assassination. For three full days from the evening of Oct 31, killer mobs ruled Delhi. There was no area they spared, barring perhaps the very heart where VVIPs reside. The state simply withered away. People were pulled out of trains, buses and cars and set upon viciously. Many were beaten to death with any weapon that was available. Others were set on fire. Sikh shops, businesses and hotels were looted and torched. It was a festival of death that emptied Delhi's streets of Sikhs for days. Published photographs of Sikhs celebrating Indira Gandhi's death in London only fuelled more violence. By the time a bruised calm returned to the city, the damage had been done. Sikh pride had been irrevocably hurt. The Congress claims to secular values were in tatters. It was a national shame.

‘To be free, the mind must be silent’ Y

OU cannot cultivate wisdom; you can cultivate knowledge, information, but you cannot cultivate wisdom because wisdom is not a thing that can be accumulated. The moment you begin to accumulate, it becomes mere information, knowledge, which is not wisdom. The entity that cultivates wisdom is still part of thought, and thought is merely a response, a reaction to challenge. Therefore, thought is merely the accumulation of memory, of experience, of knowledge, and so thought can never find wisdom. While the mind functions within the field of 'me' and the 'mine', which is merely reaction, there cannot be wisdom. Wisdom is a state of spontaneity which has no center, which has no accumulating entity. As I am talking, I am aware of the words I am using, but I am not reacting from a center to the question. To find out the truth of a question, of a problem, the process of thinking - which is mechanical and which we know - must come to an end. Therefore, it means there must be complete inward silence, and then only will you know that creativeness which is not mechanical, which is not merely reaction. So, silence is the beginning of wisdom. Wisdom is spontaneity, and there can be no spontaneity or freedom as long as there is accumulation as knowledge, memory. So, a man of experience can never be a wise man nor a simple man, but the man who is free from the process of accumulation is wise; he knows what silence is, and whatever comes from that silence is true. That silence is not a thing to be cultivated; it has no means, there is no path to it, there is no "how." To ask "how" means cultivating; it is merely a reaction, a response of the desire to accumulate silence. But when you understand the

whole process of accumulating, which is the process of thinking, then you will know that silence from which springs action which is not reaction, and one can live in that silence all the time; it is not a gift, a capacity - it has nothing to do with capacity. It comes into being only when you closely observe every reaction, every thought, every feeling; when you are aware of the fact without explanation, without resistance, without acceptance or justification; and when you see the fact very clearly without intervening blocks and screens, then the very perception of the fact dissolves the fact, and the mind is quiet. It is only when the mind is very quiet, not making

MATTER & SPIRIT an effort to be quiet, that it is free. It is only the free mind that is wise, and to be free the mind must be silent. How to overcome and resolve the growing tension and war fever. Appeals and arguments are inadequate. Inaction is a crime. How does one meet a problem like this? Why do you call inaction a crime? There are only two ways of dealing with this -- either to become a pacifist or to take a gun. That is the only way you respond. That is the only way most people know in which to answer a problem of this kind. You think you are answering the challenge when you take revenge with a gun, or whatever it is you do, and if you think that violence is no solution, you become a pacifist. In other words, you want recognition for your action, and the recognition satisfies you; you say, "I am a pacifist," or "I have a gun," and this labeling of yourself satisfies you, and you think you have answered the problem. Surely, that

is the general response, is it not? So, that is why you say inaction is a crime. Of course it is a crime from those two points of view. A man who does not carry a gun or call himself a pacifist is to you a criminal because you think according to the recognized labels, according to those two ways. Now, seeing that, let us find out if inaction is a crime - inaction being not to act along either of those two lines or their equivalents. Is that a crime? Is it a crime to say, "I am neither a pacifist nor do I carry a gun"? When would you say that? When you see that both are merely reactions to the challenge, and that through reaction you cannot solve the problem. Surely, the man who carries a gun is doing so because of his reaction, which is the outcome of his conditioning as a nationalist, or whatever he is called. The carrying of the gun is merely a reaction according to his conditioning. And the man who does not carry a gun, who calls himself a pacifist, is also reacting according to his particular view, is he not? Those are the two reactions which we know, with which we are all acquainted. During wartime you make the pacifist a martyr, and so on, but both are recognized means of activity, and when you act along either of those two lines, with all their implications, you are satisfied, you feel that at least you are doing something about the war, and people recognize that you are doing it. You feel satisfied, and they feel satisfied, and the more carrying of guns, the better. Now, the man who in wartime neither carries a gun nor calls himself a pacifist, who is inactive in the deep sense of the word, who does not respond to the challenge - such a man you call inactive and therefore criminal. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

Devendra Fadnavis braces himself POPULAR choice finally prevailed making Devendra Fadnavis the next Chief Minister of the state. The 44-year-old Fadnavis is the second youngest CM of Maharashtra after Sharad Pawar who first became CM when he was 37 years old. Fadnavis is truly deserving of the honour as he led the BJP attack from the front in the Assembly elections against proven experienced stalwarts and came out triumphant. In today's world of petty politics and corruption, Fadnavis has a clean image with proven talent as he is a grassroots leader who has held many important positions before, including Mayor of Nagpur. The fact that he enjoys Prime Minister Modi's support and trust will be beneficial for Maharashtra which is at the doorstep of bankruptcy due to MODI’S MAN FRIDAY: As expected and as needed for Maharashtra, a stable various scams and corruption. government will be formed on Friday with Devendra Fadnavis taking over as Fadnavis has it in him to lead the Maharashtra's 27th Chief Minister, the second youngest person to assume office. state to development and progress. first Chief Minister after Maha- BJP. Wankhede stadium getting ready

Simple ceremony should do THIS refers to the news item in your Diary page, 'Preparation for mega event at Wankhede' (ADC, Oct 30) which is about the grand preparations for the mega event, the swearing-in of the new Chief minister on October 31. While congratulating the BJP and its new CM Devendra Fadnavis, I for one feel that the swearing-in is a formal constitutional requirement and need not be too ostentatious for the simple reason that, how the new government gets going is more important than a big show of its being launched, just like a marriage. Where how the couple starts living together is all the more important than the celebration with thousands being treated to a big feast. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

End of speculation IT was being speculated that Nitin Gadkari has evinced interest in leaving New Delhi and coming to Mumbai as the CM of Maharashtra, all the while maintaining that he wanted to be in the Central government, as he was happy over there. Spectacle, no substance APROPOS your article 'Glitzy swearing-in ceremony' (ADC, Oct 30), the swearing-in ceremony of the new Maharashtra CM promises to be another Modi extravaganza. The great American impresario P T Barnum correctly divined that if you give the people enough of a spectacle, they won't pay much attention to substance. And what a spectacle it will be. By inviting LETTER OF film and sports stars, not THE DAY to mention Mumbai's swish set, the organisers have ensured that the television cameras will have a lot to focus on. The finishing touch will come when the new CM is being sworn-in, a short film depicting the coronation of Shivaji will play in the background. It will be a not-so-subtle reminder that there is a new emperor in town. The ceremony is being held on the anniversary of Sardar Patel – while pointedly ignoring the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi on the same day. The emphatic message is that Modi will not rest until the Congress is consigned to the dust heap of history.

'Happy New Year' (ADC, Oct 29) in which he has condemned Shahrukh Khan’s blockbuster film. How could his conscience allow him to make such irrational comments like SRK exhibits a high level of egotism and as the second richest actor in the world he is also outwardly loud and obnoxious. I am sorry that Jamshed has damaged the reputation of SRK and his production company Red Chillies Entertainment which has always produced meaningful and entertainment films which all have proved highly successful. Further it is painful when he has said that the film’s script is borrowed from Hollywood and that all the actors have made fools of themselves as they were paid to. Happy New Year is an highly successful film on its own merits and SRK has not paid money to make the theatres run Houseful. SRK simply doesn’t have to do this!

Statute against statue ALTHOUGH I am an ardent advocate of Narendra Modi, his decision to build the worlds tallest statue, the Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhai Patel does not behove a Prime Minister of his stature who has won the elections in so overwhelming a manner. The cost of building this statue is a whopping Rs 2,979 crore and even the Sardar would not have approved of it. It would be more appropriate if Modi were to build bridges with the disparate elements of the country. In fact a statute should be enacted in the Parliament to ban all statues. The building of statues should only be restricted to Madam Tussauds wax museum!

Veggie prices downslide IT was surprising to read in the newspapers that the prices of tomatoes had crashed to Rs 40 per crate in the wholesale market in Nashik, making it Rs 2 per kg and Rs 5 in the wholesale market. Were the prices of vegetables being kept on the higher side artificially by the earlier government as no steps were taken to remove the middlemen in APMC for reasons best known. Similarly in Haryana there has been a steep downslide in the vegetable prices after the new government took over. This also shows that only the fear of the BJP government being formed is enough to bring the hoarders to their knees and, as Mr Modi said, “Acche din aane wale hai." It may take time, but the view is clear.

Un-inclusive EVEN after 65 years, the Kashmir problem remains unsolved. Our Indian leaders hold talks with separatists who are aided by Pakistan to create, turmoil, chaos and instability in Pakistan. The separatists are not the voice of the people of Kashmir as they do not contest elections. They defy the very Constitution of India, thus they are not legal. One more vital point to be noted that all talks take place with Kashmiri Muslims, while Kashmiri pundits are not allowed to take part. Are they not bonafide and legal citizens of Kashmir? How will the Kashmir problem be solved when important sections of people are excluded from talks. The UNO plebiscite clearly mentions the Razakars and Pakistan troops should withdraw to pre-invasion LoC and that it should be done within 10 years. But they didn't withdraw and the time is now over. — S P Sharma, Napean Sea Road

Congress has no future INSIDE the Congress, there is no single opinion among members or required support for the NehruGandhi family. It is time it realises that the damage is beyond repair. Even P Chidambaram is right in saying that a non-Gandhi can be Congress president. Some time ago no Congress member sat near Sonia in Parliament. Such events depict a clear picture of the downfall of the Congress. Under current leadership its chance of revival is almost zero. The Congress is gone! There is no chance for Madam Sonia to come back as leader of the nation. Sonia must now retire from politics or, if good sense prevails in some Congress members, than she must be forced to retire. — Mahesh Kumar, New Delhi

The central government can, as a way out, can request the Apex Court to constitute a larger Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India to deliberate on the vexed matter. Or the Rashtrapati Bhavan's intervention can be sought by the union cabinet if it thinks that a serious issue of constitutional interpretation has arisen.

Sacred secularism THE media appears to be wondering at the soft approach of the government of West Bengal and Assam towards the increasing number of Islamic terror attacks. As a matter of fact, there is nothing unusual in their stand considering the fact that the reigning apparatus in both these eastern states that border Bangladesh are under the rule of parties which are devoutly wedded to the sacred cause of 'secularism'.

Caught and suspended for graft, four tainted staffers have rejoined duty in the past one year By Suresh Golani

W

hile the controversial move by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) administration to reinstate corrupt additional town planner Sunil Joshi has come under the public scanner, their Mira-Bhayandar counterparts are one step ahead in showing their generosity in forgiving tainted staff. Four civic employees including a junior engineer and ward officer who had been caught red-handed by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting bribes, have been reinstated into the MBMC this

year. The first case of graft involves Ward-in-Charge Sanjay Donde who was caught red-handed on August 12, 2010 while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a local builder. Junior Engineer Prashant Jankar landed in the ACB net on December 9, 2011 for accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe from a contractor to process his pending bills, two clerks Dashrath Handore and Ganesh Ghodge, from the Local Body Tax department were caught red-handed on March 2, 2012. The duo had demanded Rs 1 lakh bribe to waive off tax penalty that had been imposed on a local trader for tax evasion.

All the staffers had been placed under immediate suspension. However, on the basis of the recommendation made by an internal review committee, all of them have now been comfortably reinstated. This despite the fact that all the cases are still under the judicial scanner. According to highly placed sources in the MBMC, the committee gave its nod of reinstatement in accordance to the Government Resolution (GR) which allows reinstatement following a two-year period of suspension, even as the criminal proceedings and departmental inquiries against them tend to con-

A Comittee in MBMC gave its nod favouring corrupt babus in accordance to a GR. tinue. “Though under suspension, the concerned employees are not convicted which makes them entitled to more than 50 per cent of their salary. Moreover, it has to be ensured that such reinstated employees are deputed on non-execu-

tive posts,” said an officer on condition of anonymity. However, allowing tainted officials to resume services using the GR formula has clearly expressed the unwillingness of the civic authorities in taking a tough stand against greedy officers.

Post-Diwali jolt for parents Derailment on CR throws rail traffic off gear Schools demand lump-sum fees in between the academic year By Yatin Ingle

A

s their children return to school after the Diwali break, parents have received a surprise from school authorities. Schools have have sent a circular to parents informing them that henceforth, the school fees has to be paid in two installments or four installments, and no more every month. This is a cause of concern for parents, many of whom will struggle to put the money together. School has also stated that the same fees structure has to be followed from the next semester. Members of the parent-teacher association claim that the school authorities have been ignoring their decisions on the issues of fees hike and payment. One parent in Goregaon said, “Suddenly the school wants the fees in a lump-sum. We have to manage

several expenses. And they are announcing this in between an academic school year. The school has also ignored the PTA which is against this fees structure.” The department of education in March had released a government resolution (GR) which stated that school can increase fees only with the permission of the PTA and a 15 per cent hike could be implemented once every two years. But members of the PTA have been complaining that the school management has often been overruling its decisions. N B Chavan, deputy director of school education, said, “Schools should take the permission from the PTA to hike the fees or to even make changes in payment structures. Any school not following the decisions of the PTA shall be liable to action and punishment from the education department.”

Blast in septic tank kills 10-yr-old Residents say this is the second such incident that took place in Thane in the last three months By Priyanka Dhomse

10-year-old boy was killed and a 55-year-old person injured in an explosion at a public toilet in Thane, on Wednesday night. The explosion took place due to excessive pressure of gases formed inside the toilet's septic tank in Thane's Lokmanya Nagar locality on Wednesday night, Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. The toilet seat was located on top of the septic tank which added to the pressure, he said. Locals says it is the second such incident that took place in the last three months, but not a single civic official has taken note of the same. The deceased was identified as Aakash Vijay Singh (10), a resident of Santosh Patil chawl, police said. The boy's uncle Jilendar Singh

(55) who sustained injuries in the mishap was admitted to Thane Civil hospital. Akshay was Std V student in Gyanodaya Vidya Mandir, Thane. "My family is in shock after receiving the news of my son's death due to the blast in the septic tank. We just want to request civic officials that henceforth they should take precaution to avoid such incidents,” said, Vijay Singh (45), who works as a painter. After the incident, TMC Commissioner Asim Gupta and Mayor Sanjay More decided that public toilets in congested areas will henceforth be demolished and rebuilt in such places where the mechanism of TMC could reach during an emergency. Vartak Nagar police have registered a case of accidental death in this regard and conducting further probe, sub-inspector V.R. Patole said.

ffice goers in the city had a bad day on Thursday as more than 60 local trains were terminated following derailment of an express train at Kalyan station. Suburban local trains were running as late as one hour and forty minutes till evening. Officials confirmed that there were no casualties. Several local trains were stuck along the tracks, one behind another, waiting for the green signal. Huge crowds were seen on the

platforms of the Central Railway stations. Along with the local trains, several long distance trains were also cancelled, diverted or rescheduled. Yesterday, early morning, the engine and a bogey of the AmaravatiMumbai Express derailed while entering platform No.1 in Kalyan station. The derailment blocked the path of local trains for hours and consequently the local train schedule crashed. Central Railway Public Relation Officer A.K. Singh said, “In all 63

However, there was no effect on the Harbour and Transharbour line services which were running as per schedule.” Central Railway General Manager Brig Sunil Sood accompanied by Divisional Railway Manager Mukesh Nigam and other officials visited the accident site to supervise the restoration work. The traffic resumed on Up line at 7.20 am and on Nashik-ItagtpuriKalyan Up line it resumed at 8.33 am.

This is one of the oldest art forms in the world and the festival’s recurrence every year in the city proves its sustained popularity. The featured performers have performed in the popular Ringling Brothers Circus and Cirque Du Soleil, so we are sure that the initiative will be a rip-roaring success.” If you have always aspired to be a clown and did not know where to start, this festival also gives you the opportunity to attend some of their hands-on workshops on juggling and balloons for both beginners and professionals. he Tricky Part and All The Rage, Martin Moran’s one-man-shows, produced by Poorna Jagannathan, are all set to hit the city. Both plays draw inspiration from personal experiences, as The Tricky Part is Martin’s account of sexuality, spirituality and the mystery of human experiences, whereas All The Rage is a another piece that complements the former, and is well acclaimed. The plays are directed by Seth Barrish and are full of complexity, honesty and surprising humour — leaving you deeply engaged with the subject of sexual abuse, the focal point of both performances. Martin’s shows are known to leave audiences transformed and engaged with a subject that has been previously inaccessible to most. Producer Poorna Jagannathan, who also produced another poignant play this year, titled Nirbhaya, hopes that these two plays will draw attention and conversation to sexual violence against boys. “ Today, one in every two boys in India are sexually abused. This means that half of the boys in India are exposed to unwanted sexual interaction. Although it’s mind-boggling, the culture of shame surrounding male sexual abuse prevents survivors from seeking help or healing. Most of the time, violence is internalised and cycles of abuse just continue. While we are trying to combat sexual violence against women, we remain relatively blind to sexual violence against boys and men. I’m hoping these plays can pry open this difficult, yet vital conversation, in the same way Nirbhaya did for women. I strongly believe that ending sexual violence against boys is the key to ending the cycles of violence.” When Up to November 2 Where NCPA, Nariman Point and Prithvi Theatre, Juhu (as part of the Literature Live! The festival will feature beers from four breweries — Gateway Brewing Co, Bangalore’s Arbor Brewing Company, and Doolally and Independence Brewing Co. from Pune, serving 12 local craft beers on tap and great bottled beer as well. You will also get a sneak peek into some unreleased types of beers. The Tapped team tells us, “Never before have various brewers and importers come together on a single platform to showcase the growing local craft culture. In a way, it also shows that we don’t need sponsorships from any mainstream brands to hold a festival of this scale any more, which is why there are no brands present that usually wriggle their way into festivals like these.” Little Food Co. has put together the food for the event, which will feature burgers from Woodside Inn, cookies by Sweetish House Mafia, Bacon & Cheese Poutine by Brewbot and Vegetarian Kebabs from Pack-apav. ottery is an art that doesn’t get due credit in our country, simply because people aren’t adequately exposed to it. If you are underwhelmed by ceramic work, head to Cerafest — an exhibition that will bring together the best talent from the world of pottery — and your opinions might be altered for the better. Cerafest aims to integrate studio potters with mainstream visual art artists and give ceramics a boost in the eyes of art appreciators. In addition to showcasing pottery, the exhibition will also feature live workshops and training sessions conducted by acclaimed artists. You can expect to find works from both professionally trained and self-taught artists such as Sandeep Manchekar, Shalan Dere, Anshu Dorairaj, Raja Mohanty, Hanif Galwani and Vanmala Jain. Anshu Dorairaj, a studio potter herself, tells us that Cerafest is a unique attempt at showcasing high quality pottery. “From South Mumbai to Juhu and beyond, we have potters who create magic in their studios. The effort is to make the audience relate to and understand the art form behind ceramic ware and take a piece home. Ceramic is the oldest art form known to mankind (Remember the stamps of Mohenjo-Daro you saw and read about during history lessons in school?), and the only art form to incorporate the five elements of nature — earth, air, water, fire and ether. Cerafest will allow you to purchase creations — from a variety of items form functional pieces, to decorative ones — all under one roof. Each item is handcrafted by a studio potter and is the fruit of a laborious process.” When Up to November 2, from 11am to 7pm Where Coomaraswamy Hall, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum), Mahatma Gandhi Road, Fort Contact 22844484

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014 >> Payal Khandwala’s (inset) flagship store offers affordable bridal wear

tradition, paired with design sensibilities, Sara Shah tells you why you need to check out the newly opened Niki Mahajan Store

W

ith over a hundred stores around the world, Delhi-based designer, Niki Mahajan recently launched yet another store in Mumbai. Spread over 1,100 square feet, the store is located at the Italian Consulate building, behind Vama Cumbala Hill. It was a little hard to locate, because it is tucked away in a corner of the building. But, when you set eyes on Niki’s latest Indian and contemporary wear collection, the location seems to be a minute flaw.

The STore Although the store is sparsely furnished, the little furniture that it has is marked by elements that give the store a vintage feel. It is interesting to note that all the ensembles are strategically placed in order of their colours, which we think is sensible as it makes the selection process a bit easier. The colour palette for her ensembles excludes extremely bright and neon colours and includes pretty pastels and dark colours. What we like about >> We found Niki Mahajan’s collection classy and refreshing

ARTISTIC DESIGN Designer and artist Payal Khandwala recently launched her first store and studio in Colaba. Yamini Walia visited the space to see what’s different

P

her collection is that iantet does not just cater to older women but also younger women. Her work includes a myriad of anarkalis, shift dresses, sarees and tunics that are marked by her signature block prints, badla work, zardozi and mukaish embroidery. The ensembles were not just perfect for festivals and special occasions, but could also serve as formal wear. They have a separate collection that caters to older women who do not like too much work on their outfits and prefer to keep their look simple. Most of the ensembles are made with cotton and have light or heavy zardozi work. These are specially handcrafted to combat the warm weather in Mumbai. Overall, I think the collection is quite refreshing. The mix of traditional Indian and contemporary designs is what makes it truly unique. Prices at the store range from `12,900 onwards and they are open to on-the-spot fittings and alterations as well. And, although it is a little hard to find, we can assure you that you won’t be disappointed when you get there. ayal Khandwala launched her label in 2012 and ever since, she has been known for her artistic approach to clothing. She recently opened her first store and studio, so I was more than excited to check out her designer pieces. The store and studio is located quite close to the famous Radio Club in Colaba. So, needless to say, the location is more that perfect and she may be privy to several walk-ins. Talking about the location, Payal tells us, “The entire area around my store has several art avenues. So, I decided to pick this place for my studio. Also, Colaba is the cultural centre of Mumbai, which works in favour of my designs.” As soon as I entered the store, I noticed that it had a dramatic, yet subtle look to it. The USP of the space is that it is designed by Payal herself. Also, the mural in the store caught my attention even before I checked out the actual collection. Later, I found out that it was also created by Payal - more proof of her artistic talent. Even though the interiors give off a dark vibe, the clothes on display add a dash of colour to the store. The store doesn’t house too many collections, but does have a few extremely distinctive pieces that are

bound to grab your attention. Besides her classic silhouettes and signature colour blocking, the store will showcase graphic and geometric prints and also has hand woven silk saris and scarves on display, along with a small selection of tunics and kurtas patterned from these silks to retain the feel and drape of a sari.

But, the collection that impressed me the most was her limited collection that is exclusive to the store. It aims to cater to brides, and women who aren’t scared of experimenting with something new and distinctive. The limited edition lines and bridal wear garments are for the gentle non- conformist. “This means that our distinctive silhouettes will now be available in richer, hand-woven silks and brocades that we have sourced and developed with weavers in Bhagalpur and Banaras,” says Payal. Her pret collection is priced between `5,000 and `20,000, whereas her limited edition collection is priced between `10,000 and `60,000. So, it’s safe to say that the range is quite reasonable for bridal wear. However, for casual attire, it might prove to be a little heavy on the pocket. Overall, I was impressed by the entire look of the store. In terms of the collection, the pieces may not seem very wearable, but these can look really classy if worn with élan. especially when they were warmed through. That being said, we would have definitely liked them to be a lot gooier and have a richer chocolate taste. n Death by chocolate pastry (`60): A slice of this popular pastry certainly looked inviting, with the dark, glazed exterior, but it didn’t taste spectacular. They used milk chocolate instead of dark, and the cake itself was too moist (almost wet), turning into mush the minute you slide your fork through it. With a drier crumb and the use of dark chocolate instead of milk, this dessert would certainly fare better.

SAVOURY DELIGHTS

>> The desserts at The Baker’s Table are not spectacular

MIXED BAG We sampled a range of sweet and savoury dishes from The Baker’s Table and found that our experience was a mix of hits and misses. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry tell you more

B

akeries and confectioners are dime-a-dozen — throw a stone, and it will probably land smack in front of a quaint, inviting patisserie. We sampled dishes from The Baker’s Table, one such venture in Kandivali, and were suitably surprised.

SWEET TREATS We sampled cookies, biscottis, pastries and brownies from their exhaustive menu. Take a look at what we thought. n Almond Biscotti (`200 for 200g): The Almond Biscotti was good, although it was certainly a little too crunchy for my taste. But, it was not overpoweringly sweet, thereby allowing the classic biscotti flavour to shine. n Cookies (`200 for 200g): These were our absolute favourites and we were pleasantly surprised since they

looked rather average in the plastic containers. But, they’re large, chewy and the flavours really pop, making them a delightful tea-time treat. n Chocolate brownie (`50 per piece): These brownies definitely tasted better than they looked. They were slightly cakey, but the moist chocolate inside made them better,

BEYOND BEER?

We tried their panini sandwiches (`120 each), but they also offer pastas, soups, pizzas and burgers. Read on to find out what we thought. n Spinach and corn Panini: The spinach in this sandwich was a little too creamed and it contained too much corn — taking the spinach flavour away. However, it tastes really good if it is eaten cold. n Peppered tomato and goat cheese Panini: This sandwich was our favourite. The bread was lighter than the bread used in the other sandwiches and the flavour of the goat cheese and tomato worked in tandem, making it a delightful snack. n Peppered mushroom on toast Panini: This sandwich didn’t go down too well with us, simply because the mushroom was way too peppery. It works well as an evening snack, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you prefer your food to pack a serious punch. The Baker’s Table also has a range of cakes to pick from; we were particularly interested in the Lemon Cake with Cheesecake frosting (`90 per piece, `500 for a medium cake and `950 for a large), the American Coffee Cream (`50 per piece, `350 for a medium cake and `650 for a large cake), but the Chocolate Heaven (`70 per piece, `425 for a medium cake and `800 for a large cake) really disappointed us. The place is decent, but not spectacular by any measure. If you’re in Kandivali, do swing by, but, it’s wares definitely don’t warrant a special trip. As far as friendly neighbourhood bakeries are concerned, it stands fine on its own.

What can The Beer Café offer apart from varied beer? Absolutely nothing, says Shirley Mistry

O

n paper, The Beer Café sounds promising. With over 37 beers priced competitively, what could go wrong? Turns out, a lot. The place looks like any other food outlet in the mall and the bright, yellow plastic chairs, along with empty beer towers across a wall do little to impress. We started with Peroni (`325), an Italian beer that’s light, crisp, refreshing and served chilled. We also tried the Balty Morzo (`245), a beer-based cocktail that also contained cranberry juice, lime and sugar and to say that we were not so impressed would be an understatement. The other components of the drink overpowered the beer, and we couldn’t drink more than half of the saccharine-sweet drink. We also tried Liefmans (`745), a crisp, fruity beer with raspberry and strawberry. The menu explains each beer in detail and they also have a concise menu of hard liquor. We sampled the Chilly Paneer (`245), reminiscent of a spicy, saucy dish at a Chinese take-away joint; Sheekh Kebab (`295) that was tough, dry and lacked flavour; Tandoori Prawns (`445) that were well cooked but lacked flavour; Chicken Nuremberg Sausages (part of their Oktoberfest menu), coated in garlic and a barbecue-like sauce and the White Sauce Penne with Chicken (`345), which tasted like the effort of a struggling home-cook. The food is such a disappointment, that you’re better off

The air conditioning was extremely poor and after repeated requests to turn it up, we were still sipping our beer in a considerably warm room. Service is super slow, which is another deal breaker for me. While I wouldn’t mind heading here for a quick, speciality beer while I’m shopping, a leisurely meal is out of the question.

>> The interiors of Gangsta’s are young and experimental

A DEAL YOU CAN’T REFUSE Gangsta’s – Café and Bar promises unique décor and a great culinary experience. Dev Goswami pops in to tell you whether you should be visiting

B

andra has several restaurants with curiosityinducing names, but not many that deliver on what they promise. However, walking up the steps to Gangsta’s, past the cage-like iron rods, you know that this is not your run-of-the-mill restaurant that doesn’t have much going for it except a unique name. The décor is impressive — for the young and experimental. An older crowd may be taken aback by the chairs and paintings that stay true to its name. However, Gangstas doesn’t seem like the sort of place that wants to impress fine dining familiar sections of society anyway. Spread over two floors, they have the luxury of space, which they have used well. The tables are spread out and the walls feature sketches of popular cinematic dons like Marlon Brando. They have balanced the predominately black décor with bright colours so as not to make it look depressing or dim. We were lucky enough to sit in the Boss’s (VIP) section, which features plush chairs, dark décor and a special menu with premium alcohol (however, we sampled dishes from their regular menu as the VIP one wasn’t up and running yet). We started with the rumbased Ginger Martini (`400) and Scarface (`700). We loved the Martini and the vodka-based Scarface was delicious too, with just the right amount of apple juice. However, my favourite was the Spiced Manhattan (`700). The Jack Daniels-based drink had refreshing flavours of watermelon and passion fruit, but wasn’t overly sweet and was extremely smooth. The Long Island Iced Tea (`450) however, was a bit disappointing. We paired our drinks with kebabs. While they weren’t average bar bites, they weren’t mind-blowing either. However, the stuffed chilli deserves a special mention. Stuffed with spiced and diced chicken, it was perfectly flavoured, with the crunchy chilli lending it great texture. The Mediterranean fare won us over. The Horiatiki salad (`260) was excellent, with melt-in-your-mouth feta cheese and a tart, vinegary dressing. The Hummus Awarma (`475) had dry, but flavourful lamb ragu perfectly balanced by hummus. Also try the Jalebis with ice cream (`295), which are crunchy and syrupy. By the end of my meal, I was impressed. The Mediterranean dishes and cocktails are impressive and the décor is unique. However, remember that this is quite an expensive place. If you have the money to spend, I recommend you visit for a memorable meal. TUNNEL 33, SHIMLA What sounds like the title of a sketchy, Bollywood thriller, is actually one of Shimla’s many haunted spots. Seasoned travellers will have several stories to tell you about Tunnel 33, which is believed to be occupied by the ghost of Colonel Barog, a British railway engineer. Before you break into a sweat, take note that he is known to be a friendly ghost! Getting there: Shimla is around 360km away from Delhi, and is well connected by trains, buses and even taxis that you can hire as per your convenience. Travel tales: De Kosh, from Delhi, has handy tips on how to get to the destination from Delhi. “I prefer to go by car to Shimla. The roads are good, especially once you cross the Delhi border. I usually follow the Grand Trunk Road, then move on to the Ambala-Chandigarh Expressway and then to NH-22. On the way, you will pass some ashrams, temples and finally connect to NH-88 to reach Shimla,” he tells us.

BHANGARH FORT, RAjASTHAN Bhangarh fort, built by Raja Madhu Singh in 1613 AD, is located in Rajasthan and has been recognised as the most haunted place by the Government of India. A board has been put up by the Archaeological Survey of India on the fort’s gate, that prohibits tourists from entering the fort area after sunset and before sunrise. Getting there: The fort is situated about 86km away from Alwar. After reaching Alwar, head towards SH 29A and continue on to NH 11A, from where Bhangarh Fort is just 2km away. Travel Tales: Traveller Shivam Gupta suggests visiting the fort on weekdays. He explains, “The fort is crowded on weekends and holidays. You should go here on a weekday to truly experience its eerie aura.”

DUMAS COAST, SURAT This beach in Surat is an integral part of several horror stories. As per Hindu traditions, bodies are cremated as part of the funeral ceremony and localities around this beach use it for just that. With dogs barking all night and voices being heard whispering at the beach, locals believe that the spot is haunted. Getting there: Surat is well connected to Mumbai by all modes of transport such as air, road and railways. However, the best way to reach the city is by car through NH 8, via Kasa and Pipalgabhan. Travel Tales: Keeping the horror stories aside, the beach is also a good place for adventure sports. Traveller Husain Battliwala tells us, “The beach is a great spot for paragliding, bike rides on the seashore, as well as horse and camel rides.”

SHANIWAR WADA, PUNE

DOW HILL SCHOOL, KURSEONG

Do not visit Shaniwar Wada on a full moon night as legend has it, that the 13-year-old son of Narayana, from the Peshwa Dynasty, was brutally murdered here by one of his relatives. The boy kept running across the entire fort to save his life, while shouting for help. Even today, on a full moon night, it is believed that the boy is seen running and screaming for help. Getting there: Drive through the Mumbai-Pune expressway to reach Shaniwar Wada. You can also travel by train, as the fort is located quite close to the Pune railway station. Travel Tales: Traveller Nilesh Shinde warns you about visiting this place. He tells us, “There are many ghost stories that do the rounds about this fort.”

A haunted school sounds spooky right? This Victorian boy’s school has quite a reputation for being haunted. From loud, echoing footsteps being heard even when the school isn’t in session, to reports of wood cutters spotting a headless school boy following them, Dow Hill School in West Bengal is the place to visit if paranormal activities give you a kick. Besides that, the school offers a great view of the quaint town. Getting there: Kurseong is 50km away from Siliguri, and 30km from Darjeeling and is best explored on foot or through the toy train that plies from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. Travel tales: “Although spooky, Dow Hill provides an excellent view of the town, making it a must visit spot in Kurseong,” says Aumit Raye from Kolkata.

LAMBI DEHAR MINES, MUSSOORIE Located on the outskirts of Mussoorie, the Lambi Dehar Mines are truly spooky. It is believed that in the late ’90s, an accident in the mines saw 50,000 mine workers lose their lives. The area has been abandoned ever since and is believed to be haunted by the workers who died in this mishap. Getting there: Although Mussorie doesn’t have a train station, it is only 17km away from Dehradun and is easily accessible. Travel tales: If you are planning to cover the distance by road, traveller Shahab Siddiqui says, “ The roads between Khatauli and Muzaffarnagar aren’t in good shape and have several diversions.”

When monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. HBO, 9 p.m.

Rating agency Moody’s yesterday said the recent reform measures by the government coupled with those unveiled by the Reserve Bank on the economic, fiscal and financial fronts, are credit positive as they will accelerate growth if successfully implemented. Pointing out that these recent measures are incremental rather than radical, Moody’s said, these steps will sustain higher GDP growth and address some of the constraints on the country’s sovereign credit profile. In a report released from Singapore this afternoon, titled ‘Recent policy changes to support growth acceleration,’ Moody’s Investors Service lauded the ‘Make in India’ campaign which saw the government initiating some reforms in the labour and investment policies front. The report also appreciated the financial inclusion measures, infrastructure development initiatives, clarity around inflation targets, as well as banking and energy sector reforms are all measures in the direct direction.

ith sentiment on the economy turning positive by the day, equity investors seem to be clearly benefiting as both the Nifty and Sensex attempt scaling new peaks every few weeks. This was again evidenced yesterday as the Sensex soared by 248 points to close at an all time high of 27346, while the Nifty gained 79 points to close at 8169 points, a few points short of its previous closing high, of 8174 registered on September 8. Then the Nifty had registered an all time high at the 8181 points level and the Sensex registered an all time high at the 27390 points level. Clearly, the markets are on fire and a further rise can be expected over the coming weeks as FIIs who had slowed down their investments again reportedly got aggressive yesterday. According to market analysts “The markets are now better prepared to withstand potential rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve and the reforms process undertaken by the new government will help the economy grow at a faster pace was the opinion of market experts. The Reserve Bank Of India too has played an important role, through various measures to contain inflation. Says Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief

Economist, ZyFin Research “Fed Reserve’s growing optimism towards an economic recovery is encouraging. India’s external sector should benefit from an expanding aggregate demand in the US, where consumer confidence and employment are on an uptrend already. Withdrawing Quantitative Easing should not have any major implications on India especially due to the added protection of Fed refraining from raising rates and Dr Rajan’s strict vigil on the Indian interest rate regime, “In v e s t o r s remained positive on Markets despite the Fed putting an end to Quantitative Easing. Yes Bank and Maruti Suzuki posted results which were above estimates which cheered the markets while ICICI Bank Q2 results were in line with expectations. India VIX rose around 2% in the trading session yesterday which suggest the upside could be limited. European Markets were seen trading in the red and Investors are likely to keep a close eye on US markets as well, said Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, Director, WealthRays Securities.

The Fed optimism of the US markets led to sharp gains in export oriented stocks and sectors. While the IT and technology sectors closed with handsome gains, the realty and oil & gas sectors too witnessed hefty gains. While 1584 stocks advanced, 1364 stocks declined and 120 remained unchanged on the Sensex. “The FED has finally concluded the Bond buying program, but has pledged to keep the interest rates low to support economic growth. Improvements in the labor market along with expansion of economic activity at moderate pace have been pillars to the decision. Nifty traded in the range of 7750-8150 in the October series. First half witnessed selling pressure after which positive bias set into the markets. Mixed activity was seen across sectors. Private Banking and Capital goods gained significantly while Metals underperformed. FMCG, IT and Pharma consolidated with a negative bias with some recovery seen towards the end of the series. For the Nov series, Nifty has strong support at 8000 with resistance seen at 8250-8300 levels. Profit booking is advised at 8250-8300. Breach of 8000 can invite selling pressure, said Sahaj Agrawal, Deputy Vice President- Derivatives Research, Kotak Securities.

Making Money On Smartphones In Emerging Markets A Challenge By A Business Reporter

E

23

ven as smartphone sales in the emerging markets have brought cheer to handset makers with growth rate hitting 30 % year-onyear, analysts say the real challenge before the companies is to make money on such handsets in the affordable range, research firm IDC said. Buoyed by growing sales in emerging markets, smartphone shipments worldwide hit 327.6 million units in the July- September quarter, up 25.2 % compared to 261.7 million units shipped in the year-ago period despite rumours of a slowing market, it added. Quarter-on-quarter the shipments rose 8.7 % above the 301.3 million units shipped in April-June quarter of 2014. "We have finally reached a point where most devel-

oped markets are experiencing single-digit growth while emerging markets are still growing at more than 30 %, collectively," IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker Programme Director Ryan Reith said. In these markets, smartphone price points are making mobile computing possible where it was once expected feature phones to remain dominant, he added. "This is great news for overall volumes, but the challenge has now become how to make money on devices that are quickly becoming commodity products. Outside of Apple, many are struggling to do this," Reith said. A driving force behind the record smartphone volume was the combined effort of the vendors trailing market leaders Samsung and Apple, IDC said.

Rare talent: Aishwarya By Rajesh V Gaur & Suneel V Gaur

A

ishwarya Rai Bachchan celebrates her 40th birthday on November 1. Her striking beauty and her 1994 Miss World title made her seem an obvious fit as a model, but the truth is that she was studying to become an architect. But she soon began accepting movie offers that had been pouring in. The important answer that her fans want to know is regarding the comeback of the actress. Aishwarya, who is the brand ambassador of Longines, had once said at a press conference, “I haven't realised time has flown by so quickly, I am busy attending to my daughter, meeting my professional commitments, I thank my fans for being so supportive. I am being approached by a lot of directors, but as of now I cannot commit. Let's see.” Would she be starring in 'Happy Anniversary' with husband Abhishek? “Well, Prahlad Kakkar was the one who launched me. He is family and I had promised I would do his first film. He had a concept of a story about a couple and Abhishek and me seem to fit it, but nothing concrete as of now, let it take shape,” she smiled. After initial setbacks, Aishwarya became a topnotch star with movies like 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Devdas', 'Jodha Akbar', 'Dhoom 2', 'Guru', and many more. This ‘Kajrare' girl kept the audiences glued to their seats when she shook a leg with husband Abhishek

Bachchan and father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan in the ‘Kajrare’ song featured in ‘Bunty & Babli'. Though Ash’s films like 'Raincoat', 'Raavan', 'Umraao Jaan' were commercially unsuccessful, her performances in these films earned kudos. Her performance was highly acclaimed in 'Chokher Bali' [Bengali] as well. The rare combination of beauty and talent, Aishwarya has also acted in a number of Hollywood films like her successful ‘Bride and Prejudice’. She has also shared screen with big names like Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley in 2007's historical epic ‘The Last Legion’.

Mega-star Salman Khan of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ fame strongly feels that his buddy (former romantic hero) Kamal Sadanah’s directorial debut movie ‘Roar’ produced by construction tycoon Abis Rizvi will make ‘roaring business’.

Wasn’t it true that due to restrictions in India, they had to shoot with trained live tigers in distant Los Angeles? With a naughty glint he reacts, “That’s right. We even had to get those vilayti tigers auditioned, to check who was the ‘best performer’ to match our script. We have also used the latest ‘augmented reality’ VFX, in our movie,” signs off Kamal whose next action, adventure movie, hold-yourbreath, will be minus any wild animals.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014 A scene from the movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

L

ast week, on October 20, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, “kickstarted its 20th year of uninterrupted run at the iconic Maratha Mandir in Mumbai! The National Award winning film changed the course of a nation’s cinema and became an unparalleled brand by catapulting itself into being The Longest Running Film in the history of Indian Cinema,” said a press note from the production company. In December this year, DDLJ will complete 1000 weeks of an uninterrupted run, which is quite an achievement for any film. And theYRF team is promising a blast of activities to celebrate the occasion, which the success of the film richly deserves. There is a change that took place in the way films are marketed around this time, and it had a lot to do with Aditya Chopra’s acumen. Promotion was always important to the box-office fate of any film, but the Gen Next filmmakers realised just how audiences could be bombarded with information and steered into the cinema hall. The industry had emerged shakily from a crisis caused by the TV and video revolution, and the new films that came up had to be bigger and glitzier. DDLJ was also one of the early movers in capturing the overseas market, riding in the nostalgia that was set off by Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Homesick NRIs wanted to see a picture of India that suited their rose-tinted memories. That’s why, ‘family’ films, full of rituals and selling so-called traditional values did

ctor Farhan Akhtar, who is currently shooting his upcoming film ‘Wazir’ with Amitabh Bachchan here, says he was initially anxious to share screen space with the Bollywood megastar. Farhan (40) said that the ‘Bhootnath Returns’ star made him comfortable on the sets. “I was anxious to know how the days would be with him (Bachchan). But it’s very easy to work with him. He has a positive personality and keeps the atmosphere easy on the sets. So, the minute you reach the set and start talking to him, you will feel comfortable automatically. “I am playing an ATS cop and for that I felt being too lean will not look right. Whenever I meet them they are slightly tougher. I had to put on seven kg for the film. I did power and endurance training and changed my diet to put on weight,” he said. Farhan met some of his ATS officer friends in Mumbai to prepare for the character.

paratha-fed Indian boy. Many films had been shot abroad before, but DDLJ gave Indian audiences a fantasy tour of gorgeous foreign locations, which they would dream of visiting one day. The fact that YRF products did so much for Swiss tourism, that a lake was named after Yash Chopra, says a lot. Post HAHK and DDLJ, filmmakers with generous budgets started shooting abroad, because exotic locations seemed to attract audiences; so much so that several countries laid out the red carpet for Indian filmmakers with subsidies and grants. Twenty years later, it seems as if glamour and big

budgets are all there is to Bollywood commercial cinema. DDLJ had a plot, an emotional core and sugary romance, today’s films just have a cynical adherence to formula and ‘what audience want.’ And in 20 years, so many films copied the DDLJ formula and started paying tributes to it. That Swiss hat with the feather can be tipped to the film that has become a landmark of Bollywood cinema—not the best film ever made, but definitely the most successful.

SRK keen to promote PAmitabh takes to the streets with a broom! Bengali film industry

T

he Bengali film industry is likely to get a shot in the arm with West Bengal brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan promising to promote Bengali films. “I really would like to participate not as an actor but as someone who has a little more reach because of the language that I make films in. I would like to bring that expertise here and take the culture, literature and intellectual inputs from Bengal because I truly believe that this is the cultural hub of

our country,” the superstar told reporters when asked about what his plans for Tollywood. He said films are his forte and would like to do something for films made in Bengal. “I would just take some time but I would do it. It is not my duty, its my privilege to do it,” the Bollywood star said. Khan, who is celebrating the record-breaking box office success of his latest release ‘Happy New Year’, said it is unfortunate that some people think of him as being repetitive. “I often read articles about how I keep doing the same thing. It’s unfortunate because I can’t explain people that it’s not the same thing. I feel very deeply about what I do and I try to turn it around and make light of what I do because I don’t think everyone wants to know the process that I go through as an actor. “I reinvent myself every time,” SRK said and asked his fans to expect the unexpected from him.

Prabhudeva pays tribute to Elvis Presley P

rabhudheva has released the first song of his upcoming film ‘Action Jackson’ titled Keeda and the song is generating a lot of buzz as it not only sees an otherwise serious Ajay Devgn dancing but also because through this peppy romantic number the actor-director duo has paid tribute to the King of Rock & Roll Elvis Presley. The song also features the movie’s lead actress Sonakshi Sinha and has been shot in Austria. The actors have not only performed some of Elvis’ signature moves in the song but the

background dancers’ costume has also been inspired by Presley’s famous white and red bell-bottom jumpsuit and they have also sported the King’s famous hairstyle. ‘’Elvis Presley is an icon. Prabhu sir and Ajay sir are huge fans of Elvis Presley; hence they took inspiration from him for the costumes of the background dancers. They have been dressed just like Elvis Presley and will be seen doing some signature moves of the legend,’’ says a source close from the production team.

ADVANI CLINCHES WORLD BILLIARDS TITLE,

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014

EEDS: India's most celebrated cueist Pankaj Advani clinched the World Billiards Championship (time format) title to bag a record 12th world crown and also complete a rare 'Grand Double' post his third win in both the long and short formats in the same year. Bangalore's 'Golden Boy' set the green baize on fire as he humbled England's rising star Robert Hall 1928-893 in a one-sided contest to hand his mother, Kajal, a perfect birthday gift on Wednesday. He had won the 150-up format last week after defeating Peter Gilchrist. Hall, who had got past Advani's citymate Balachandra Bhaskar in the semi-finals, could not stand up to the Indian ace and the Englishman's maiden final

appearance ended on a disappointing note. But it was all smiles for Advani, whose third grand double makes him the only billiards player to achieve this feat. Advani, 29, surpassed Mike Russell, who had won the double in 2010 and 2011. Advani's previous grand doubles were in Malta in 2005 and in his hometown in 2008. Saving his best for the last, which is often synonymous with Advani, he led 746-485 with the help of a 185 break in the first session of the fivehour final. On resumption, the Indian ace fired in breaks of 94,182, 289 and 145, adding a whopping 1000 points in under two hours. Advani then went into overdrive making the match a foregone conclusion with over hour left on the

clock. On how he was able to turn things around in the second session, Advani said, "With a 260 lead in the first half, I knew I had things under control. But Hall has the ability to come back so I decided that I was going to score as much as possible on each visit. I spoke with my brother Shree who was following the match online. A couple of tips from him did the trick too." When asked about the multiple records, a thrilled Advani said, "I don't know what to say. The way I feel makes words seem incapable of truly depicting it. I worked really hard on my game and fitness, both physical and mental before coming here (to Leeds) and it definitely paid off. "I'm on my way to Sheffield today to get billiards out of my system and switch to snooker in order to prepare for the IBSF World Snooker Championship happening next month in Bengaluru." On winning his 12th world title on his mother's birthday, he said, "This win is truly special. Apart from the dozen world titles and the third grand double, the main reason for it being so special is because it was won on my mother's birthday. She is my rock. Happy birthday Mom! SAfrica police arrest Meyiwa killing suspects N

JOHANNESBURG: South African police have arrested two people in connection with the murder of national football captain Senzo Meyiwa during a robbery at his pop-star girlfriend's home, media has reported. According to the public broadcaster SABC, two men were being held yesterday for questioning after they were arrested in Nongoma, in the eastern KwaZulu Natal province. Police in Johannesburg could not immediately confirm the arrest. The SABC said the suspects were nabbed following a tip-off by members of the public. The 27-year-old goalkeeper was shot dead late Sunday when burglars broke into Kelly Khumalo's house in a township some 30 kilometres south of Johannesburg, making off with a cell phone. Police have offered a reward of USD 23,000 for any information leading to the killer's arrest.

EW DELHI: In the wake of Sports Ministry's diktat of not to extend financial help to athletes who prefer professional commitment over representing India, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal today insisted her first priority would always be to play for the country. "I don't think anyone would not want play for the country. Everyone would want to play for the country. Sometimes you can't ignore that there is injury or a player goes through some difficult situation. Otherwise, I am sure everyone would want to play for the country and for the pride of the nation," said Saina on the sidelines of an event organised by USHA at the Delhi Golf Club here. The Ministry's diktat came after top tennis players like men's number one Somdev Devvarman, veteran Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna refused to participate in the Incheon Asian Games, citing loss of

rankings points on the ATP circuit. Asked how difficult it is to balance playing for the country and prize money events, the London Olympic bronze medallist went on to say, "In the prize money event also you are not going there just as a player. You play at the state level, then national level and finally you reach the international level. So at that level, you only play for the country. It is not about prize money or

medal, it is only about your country." Saina, however, refused to comment when she asked specifically about top tennis players' decision to opt out of the Asian Games to compete in ATP and WTA events. "I can only talk about myself and for me it is very important to play for the country," she insisted. Meanwhile, Saina said she was extremely happy with the year 2014 where she won two

titles -- India Open Grand Prix Gold and Australian Open. "I have done very well this year. I have two titles and obviously the players whom I have lost to are only the top three players in the world and there is no one else who have defeated me this year. I am sure one good win and next year will be even better. But if I get some three to four weeks of training, there would a lot of change in my game," said Saina.

My commitment should not be questioned: Paes

NEW DELHI: A day after sports ministry made it clear that athletes who remain unavailable for national duty would not get financial aid from it, top tennis star Leander Paes said his commitment should not be questioned since he has given his all in the last 24 years while playing for India. Ministry had not named any athlete but it was clear that the reference was to tennis players who skipped the Incheon Asian Games to play on ATP tour to salvage their rankings. Paes said he was not aware of the whole story so he cannot comment much but his patriotism is beyond doubt. "I have not heard about it so it's not right for me to comment. But I have played six Olympics and

I don't have to say more about my commitment," Paes said. "It's very clear to see, I love playing for the flag and the people. When I play at Grand Slams, I play for India, for flag and for people," Paes said. Paes, who has been a hero of India's many memorable Davis Cup victories, said "At the end of the day, I have to do my job and earn my living and I am focussed on my job, winning more Grand Slams. I have done my bit in the last 24 years not just for myself but also for the people," he said. Asked if the ministry has been unfair to him by questioning his commitment, Paes said, "I have heard (ministry's version) and I don't want to comment.

UMBAI: The importance of the tour game between India A and Sri Lanka was more for the India contingent rather than the visitors. Firstly, all eyes were on Rohit Sharma who is eying a comeback in the Indian team. Secondly, it was more important for him and the others to leave an impression especially since the chief selector of the Indian team, Sandeep Patil had his watchful eyes over the day's proceedings. The Sri Lankan team showed gratitude by accepting India offer to play the five one-day series, however, on Thursday they were humbled by the India ‘A’ by 88 runs. Taking to field on winning the toss, Lankans led by Angelo Mathews had to face the wrath of not only of the sultry heat but also of the bashing they received, courtesy tons by Rohit Sharma [142 runs] and Manish Pandey [135 n.o.]. Sharma whose comeback in to the Indian team was prolonged due to a delay in recovery of his finger injury, was at ease during his knock of a quick-paced 142 runs of 111 deliveries. He was soundly supported by Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey who too brought up his ton off 86 balls at the Brabourne Stadium. Both the batsmen who are looking to make inroads in to the Indian eleven, notched a double century stand for the

Sharma was in his element which serves as good news for the Indian line up which is struggling with their combinations at the top and the middle order. With the team already been selected for the the first three one-day international matches, his return to the Indian team is almost certain after his fluent 142 runs here in Mumbai. The Lankan bowling posed absolutely no challenges to the Indian batsmen as they made merry against the 10 bowlers of the visitors. While it was evident that the visitors were trying to get some match practice, the Indian batsmen showed no mercy as they picked on all of them. The Lankan batting too, had no sting in their armour as most of them looked erroneously rusty at the wicket. The only man who stood out was opener Upul Tharanga [76] while rest of the batsmen got starts which seemed good enough to warm themselves up. For India, spinner Karn Sharma was the pick of the bowling with four wickets in his kitty. Kerala down Pune 2-1, register first ISL win

as Pune goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi of Italy walked off the field in the 50th minute and Churchill's Arindam Bhattacharya took charge at the post. But Sabeeth and Sandesh Jhingan continued to put some nice passes in the left flank to keep Pune defenders guessing. Kerala think-tank then came up with a substitution as Penn Orji replaced Brazil's Guilherme Milhomem Gusmao in the 61st minute. Orji soon made it count when the Kenyan international scored in the 65th minute. Iain Hume's spectacular pass from the right wing was safely taken inside the box by Orji and he perfectly shot it at the bottom right corner to give Kerala the decisive lead. From then on Pune tried hard to comeback into the game but the away team proved to be strong with their defense. With the win, Kerala have overtaken Pune in the standings and are placed fifth in the table led by Atletico de Kolkata. Kerala next travel to Mumbai on November 2 while Pune visit Kolkata on November 7.

But the cheer was shortlived as Kerala soon pulled up their socks to go full throttle and India U-23 forward Chinadorai Sabeeth equalised in the 41st minute. It was a sweet combination of moves as Stephen Pearson's well-taken corner was directed at Cedric Hengbart, who headed it towards the goal and an alert Sabeeth quietly tucked the ball into the net. This was Sabeeth's first goal in the league and the 23year-old striker celebrated it in great style. Attacks and counter-attacks continued from either end of the goal but the score remained 1-1 at half-time. The break did not prove too good for the home team

31 ATK’s Borja says team raring to go against Mumbai FC

KOLKATA: Chennaiyin FC's thumping 5-1 win against Mumbai City FC would not put Atletico de Kolkata under any extra pressure and their star midfielder Borja Fernandez today said they would be raring to go for a win when the two teams face in a top of the group ISL clash on November 4. "We all are professionals. We want to get the three points. We're trying to compete and do our best. This is sport after all," Borja told reporters on the sidelines of their practice at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan here. The Spanish midfielder who scored a stunning goal against Mumbai in the tournament opener said he had watched Chennai's big win. "They are doing very well in the League. They are a very good side, we are ready to compete with them." Asked what they have thought about Chennaiyin's marquee player Elano Blumer who's been very impressive with his spot-on freekicks, he said: "The coach will strategise and decide on the plan on that particular day. It would not be just Elano but on the entire team." The unbeaten ATK are in the middle of a long eightday gap and the 33-year-old said it would not mean lack of intensity. "We did very well in the last five games. We're expecting to play with the same level. In times of recovery, the gap would be very good for us." ATK would miss out on Fikru Teferra (two-match suspension) in the much crucial match against Mumbai FC. "It's always better to have Fikru in the side. He's been playing from the first match so he's quite set with the team. Obviously, Fikru brings the difference." He however said that Arnal Llibert was giving his best. "Arnal Llibert who played in Fikru's place did a lot of hard work. You have to give his replacement (Arnal) some time... He did pretty well against Kerala Blasters FC," he said referring to their 1-1 draw in their last outing. The group leaders ATK have a slender two point lead over second-placed Chennaiyin FC.have played one match less and Saha said both the teams would be raring to go.
