Samruddhi's loss in the form of her mother is these little ones' loss too. Fortunately, Samruddhi is able to see her father Jairam everyday as he is also being treated at Sion hospital. She is being carried around by him and can cuddle upto him but Janvi and Manasvi are awaiting their father's return to their village at Roha where they are staying with their maternal grandmother Rajibai (56). They have not met Jairam for more than a month and they miss him. They are also psychologically affected by the mishap and need their father by their side.

Mansi (29), Urban Designer, Studio Pod, suggested that one should cycle at least twice a week. “Cycling not only saves fuel but is also very healthy as you burn calories instantly. I cycle from Colaba to Matunga twice a week, it keeps me fit and active,” she revealed. Cynethra (23) advised, “Organisations in India need to develop the habit of cycling to work and provide facilities to the employees which would motivate them to do so.” Firoza (43), from Smart Commute, believes that one can be fit and get an instant workout by cycling. “We at Smart Commute encourage our employees to cycle at least once a week. We update our route directions on our Facebook page and if people are interested they join in. I cycle from Juhu to Chembur.” Amar Gutta (38), businessman, said, “I am fascinated by the idea of cycling to work, but I guess organisations should have proper shower facilities available for the people who would cycle in. I wonder if firms would ever provide such a facility.”

e are at Azad Nagar and it is a really nice experience. The air-conditioned compartments are the best part of the Metro,” said an eight-year old Dhanvi. On Sunday morning, the much awaited Mumbai Metro's first phase was inaugurated by CM Prithviraj Chavan, with an aarti followed by the CM's journey of the Metro. The excitement among city-dwellers was evident as the ADC spoke to a few of them. Priti Parak (25) said, “I will save some time now and will be able to commute in a better manner. The gap be-

travelling will become a lot easier in the city. “I can now travel from Marol to Ghatkopar without traffic, my boss will no more yell at me for being late. We will not have to worry about blocked roads during the rains.” Bhakti (19), a BMM student, feels that the Metro will save her time. “I earlier used to waste an hour in travelling but now I can reach my destination in a few minutes. The Metro station is near my house and it is bound to be a smooth ride.” The metro that is for the aam admi is finally up and running in Mumbai and has multiple advantages – it is free for children with a height below three feet, it has high-tech railway stations with high security, it saves time and connects you from the central to western railways in minutes. It also has spacious seats with some reserved for women. However, the cost of the food items available at the stations is not very pocket-friendly. An aloo paratha costs Rs.70, a muffin costs Rs.50 and a bun maska costs Rs.40. The food items are surely not for the aam aadmi.

Leadership crisis T

he untimely loss of Gopinath Munde has raised several questions, mostly political, about trauma care and road safety. It is only after such tragedies that the government wakes up and in a knee-jerk reaction, promises to bring in necessary changes, while it continues not to learn from past mistakes or shortcomings in law. We continue to pay Road Tax and several other taxes, but nobody bothers to pay attention or raises questions over the poor conditions of the roads and inadequate infrastructure facilities associated with roads. Call it leadership crisis or the void left behind by Munde, the feeling is just sinking in for the political soil of Maharashtra. The leadership void is more particularly being felt in the BJP where already some call it as an end of the MahajanMunde era. And for the backward region of Marathwada, the setback has been tremendous in terms of solving development issues. He was always criticised for being late for functions. But when asked about it, he used to argue that he simply could not refuse to meet the last man standing at his doorstep. It was his ability to cut through protocol and connect with the masses that not just earned him the tag of a mass leader, but also led to some egg shells being broken. That was quite visible last week when his close confidant, Pandurang Phundkar, and leader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde spilled the beans as it were. Phundkar alluded to the fact that late Munde was in recent times feeling suffocated and sidelined in the party and was even contemplating leaving the party. Though he later denied it, the fact still remains and was one of the reason for the outbreak of public anger at his cremation that someone down the line had caused much hurt to the late Munde. Tawde too candidly admitted to there being differences between them and Munde. Besides, there is considerable unease within what is being called as the MahajanMunde camp in the party, with several leaders owing allegiance to the two departed party stalwarts fearing victimisation and political isolation. The most visible setback for the party has been that it has lost a true mass base leader just as when the Assembly elections are round the corner. The loss is now to be recovered and that too in a very short period of time. For some, his daughter Pankaja MundePalve may be too young to adorn the mantle of leadership. But for the record, she was the one who single-handedly managed her late father's 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elec-

Sir, we cannot afford to even rent a place in the same locality. All I ask of you is to allow me to die peacefully of old age, in this my home of the last 20 years. Please do not allow Campa Cola Compound to go down in history as the case in which more than 100 homes, entwined with a thousand destinies, could have been saved, if only you had acted in time.” Yesterday evening, Mr Chawla was consigned to the flames at Worli Shamshan Ghat. He died a sad and broken man.

AAP on brink T of break-up? T

HE complaint of AAP leaders is that Arvind Kejriwal is slowly becoming a dictator and unwilling to share power. It looks like the leaders would like to believe that but for the fact Kejriwal kept all decision-making to himself and never once held a consultation meeting with regard to elections, they would have got more seats. This is a familiar happening in Indian politics: so long as a leader wins elections for them, he is kept on a pedestal. When he fails to do so, he is pulled down and blamed for everything. The main protest has come from Yogendra who is claimed by Arvind Kejriwal as a close friend. These leaders would have liked consultations among the executive committee members before and after the elections. The truth is one by one, they have started deserting Arvind Kejriwal. In all probability, the party will break up. Kejriwal made a big mistake by trying to capture power at the centre and become the prime minister. He thought perhaps with the exit of the Congress, there could be good bit of space for a new and vigorous party like his. What he did not know was that a political party cannot register its name and win elections in six months. He took on more than he could chew. He had made a good beginning in Delhi and he should have been content with what he had and then waited. He should never have taken part in national election. Wiser now, he can perhaps look at things pragmatically. He has to regain the confidence of his party leaders. Maybe now he has some chance in Haryana. However to wash off the minus points he has gathered during the Lok Sabha elections, the chance of a win for the Aam Admi Party anywhere in the country looks dim. It will be difficult for him to build the party again. He is now to win back party leaders who are finding fault with his political strategies.

HE AAP boss and the self-styled harbinger of new politics, Arvind Kejriwal, is still occupying the New Delhi flat he was allotted upon becoming the Delhi Chief Minister sometime late last year. As per the rules, he ought to have vacated that flat within fifteen days of his ceasing to hold that office. Yes, he is paying Rs. 80,000 per month as special rent for occupying that house beyond the permissible time limit. So far so good. But notice the AAP boss’s audacity. Asked why he had failed to vacate that house, he nonchalantly explained that he needed to retain it due to the school exams of his daughter. And that his ‘friends from the IIT’ were paying the rent for the flat which was occupied by him. Because he is Kejriwal, the seemingly incorruptible politician, we have two valid though relatively minor objections. One, almost all politicians advance one reason or the other to somehow retain highly subsidized government houses beyond the permissible time limit. This is also true of most civil servants. We expected that Kejriwal would set a better example. He did not. Two, the official rent for government houses is way blow the actual rent similarly located private property would fetch in the open market. Paying Rs. 80,000 for a spacious, three-bedroom, ground floor flat with a large lawn, located a stone’s throw away from India Gate , is a real steal. Tens of thousands of Delhiites would want to avail of that opportunity to rent that flat at that modest rent. But the real reason why we have raked up the issue about Kejriwal’s flat is his public admission that his well-wishers from the IIT, and not he himself, pay his rent. Even if his friends are impressed by his political mission, is he justified in accepting donations for personal well-being, as against for the benefit of the public organization he heads? Merely because he is a politician does it become alright for him to accept handouts from his so-called friends and wellwishers? That is precisely how most politicians get corrupted? Indeed, how, then, is Kejriwal different from, say, Mayawati who too had justified the hundreds of crores found in her illicit possession to the Income Tax authorities by citing her unnamed fans and devotees? If Kejriwal can take money from his IIT friends to pay for the rent for the flat occupied by him, the BSP boss had claimed that the crores in her possession were ‘donations,’ all in small denominations of Rupees ten, twenty, fifty, etc., given by her followers who were impressed by her campaign to lift up the socially downtrodden.

to read about him not having a room of his own in Parliament House, not having a prominent seat in the Lok Sabha, not finding a suitable role in the Narendra Modi dispensation. At the very least, Advani can put an end to the series of embarrassing reports by categorically stating that he is not hankering after any post, any position in the Government. The fact is that at no stage was he considered for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. No, not even for a moment. The speculation in the media was all the handiwork of his aides who were keen to find relevance yet again. You have European kings and queens abdicating in favour of younger members, you have the extraordinary example of a Pope resigning for the very first time in living history, but old dodos of Indian politics voluntarily retiring remains an unattainable objective. Unless death or paralyzing illness forces them out, no Indian politician seems ready to quit. That is sad. Advani cuts a sorry figure, desperately trying to remain relevant while his legions of admirers and well-wishers, including this columnist, would want him to retain dignity and grace and withdraw quietly from active politics.

Indeed, when the tax authorities questioned the transfer of a house in central Delhi to Mayawati, insisting that it was grossly undervalued, she again resorted to the same ploy. Apparently, the sellers, a lower-middle class Jain couple, were so taken up with her pro-Dalit crusade that they had virtually donated the only house they owned in all of Delhi to the BSP boss. What are we driving at? That the use of political donations for personal benefit is a nono, whatever good the recipient might be doing for the larger cause of the society. That way lies personal corruption. Whether Kejriwal likes it or not, his first walking away with-

out reimbursing nearly Rs. eight lakhs to the Government he was oath-bound to reimburse in case he quit service within three years of his return from a foreign study tour and, when compelled to do so, to make his ‘well-wishers’ cough up that sum was a dishonest act. Politicians do not have the license to use other peoples’ money for purely private ends. They must face the same hardships as ordinary people in all other walks of life do when their daughters need to sit for a board exam or when they are asked to respect a lawful contract and pay up. There is a lot of artifice about Kejriwal. He pretends to be saintly while all the time keeping his own self interest foremost in mind whether it is in money matters or in gathering the AAP pieces postelection. In sum, Kejriwal is wrong insofar as he encourages politicians to dip into public funds for private use.

Riding in testing times THE recent road accident of Union Minister Munde in Delhi has scared road users. It is indeed unfortunate to note that the drunken driving has taken a heavy toll of lives. People generally drink during the night and the hangover continues into the early morning hours also. The main reason for all this road rage is speeding and irritating fellow drivers by overtaking from the wrong side of the road. Kiran Bedi has had rich experience in handling road-related problems in the past and should be pressed into service to prevent regular road accidents. She did a marvelous job by painting have head lights with black paint on both sides to prevent blinding passengers coming from the opposite side. Such remedial measures can save human lives.

No country for women APROPOS 'WR unsafe!' (ADC, June 6), it is read with huge anguish and serious concern to observe how callous the GRP is despite their informing the public about enhanced railway security, especially for the women at large . However Thrusday's attack on a lone woman travelling in the wee hours reveals how hollow these promises are. Within six weeks of a woman brutally killed on a WR train, it has occurred again. We are not also aware how many such inhumanely attacks are made on women each day, which go unreported . It is prudent that the WR, along with other sections of the Indian Railways, should effectively engage adequate GRP who can cope with these demons who prey on women, particularly in the odd hours of travel on a war footing. Electronic surveillance needs to be geared up at the vantage points to pin these rogues.

BY not wearing helmets, bike riders are risking their lives. Even pillion riders have to wear helmets. The helmet is an insurance to life, after all most accidental deaths are due to head injury. While a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report declares that motorcyclists are about 18 times as likely as car occupants to die in a traffic crash, and three times as likely to be injured, a study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore has also confirmed that the severity of head injury was higher among those who were not using helmet. As the monsoon rains are expected and road repair work is not complete, it is dangerous to travel on the roads. Transport authorities should pay heed to this fact early.

orget the stand-off between Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) and the state government over ticket pricing, even the eatables that went on sale yesterday across the 12 Metro stations on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro One Line drilled holes in the commuters' pockets. It was further projected that the employees were moving to another country and could not take their bike along and were thus willing to sell their highend foreign bikes at low rates. The complainant was shown some photos of the foreign bikes and when he got interested, he was told to deposit a few lakhs in a bank account. Under the said act, as the Metro Authority, it was MMOPL's duty to fix the tariff rates. To raise the fares, the MMOPL will have to approach the fare fixation committee that comprises a sitting judge, retired judge, government of India nominee and a nominee of the state government. The latter is yet to appoint its own representative to the committee. The MMOPL is expecting a daily footfall of about 11 lakh commuters. It plans to operate anywhere between 270 to 280 services per day at an interval time of four minutes during peak hour (8.30 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7.30 pm) and eight minutes during non-peak hours. The MMOPL will operate services between 5.30 am to midnight. The Metro Depot at DN Nagar has a yard measuring just eight hectares and can house 16 trains. One of the unique features of the VAG Metro is that the MMOPL has installed noise reducing springs on the route whereby minimal noise generated affects the local residents.

However, the emergency siren went off at about 8 pm triggering panic amongst locals who suspected a burglary attempt underway inside the bank premises. Alert beat marshals immediately reached the spot and informed their superiors and bank staffers about the incident,

following which bank personnel and a team of officials from the Kashimira police station arrived at the spot. The loud noise made by the alarm had by then attracted a crowd of curious onlookers. The cops heaved a sigh of relief when the burglar turned out to be a rat, which had apparently nibbled on the cable of the burglar alarm.

he European Central Bank (ECB) announced unprecedented measures in its monetary policy review meeting last week and has announced that it will continue its ongoing stimulus programme in a bid to promote growth and deter the region from entering the deflationary trap. Its major focus was a significant reductions in interest rates even as banks were signaled to increase lending. So will it impact India? Yes, to a certain extent believes Care Ratings. Clearly, growth continues to elude the Euro region and has remained a serious concern with the economy recording only 0.2% real GDP growth on a quarter-over-quarter basis in Q1 2014. Growth has remained stagnant rather than recovery oriented, with prospects of growth in the ongoing second quarter of 2014 also appearing weak. Spending has been low especially with strict curbs being put on fiscal deficits of member countries. Hence, an accommodative monetary policy by virtue of a lowered interest rate is expected to make way for more lending and thereby, hopefully fuel growth even as the continued improvements in the financial systems of the countries work their way through to the real economy. The motivation to continue with the stimulus is also to implicitly reduce the pressure on the Euro which has been strengthening over time. This will subsequently foster a trade advantage for the Eurozone. The high Euro in international markets has been a factor attributed to the weak economic recovery. Another thing and in sharp contradiction to India is that while we are worried about high inflation, the region is haunted by low inflation. Yes, actually, they

Gold could nudge upwards in the international markets, while Emerging economies could continue to remain the favored destination for FIIs But there are positives also. Emerging economies will continue to remain the favored destination for FIIs. Firstly, given the macro economic situation in the Eurozone with low growth and low inflation, it is unlikely that the Euro area will offer competition to the emerging economies as regards FII inflows. Extremely low interest rates will be a deterrent to foreign investment inflows in the region. Secondly, the Eurozone contributes to only 12-13% of the total foreign currency inflows in India as majority foreign currency inflows come from the USA. Hence, this scenario is unlikely to be changed going ahead. Gold also stands to gain. Care Ratings is of the view that “ Owing to the easy monetary policy stance of the ECB driven by the lack lustre growth situation, gold is likely to rise in appeal thereby pushing up its value in international markets.

EUROPE'S FINANCIAL GAMBLE

The “European Central Bank has taken an extraordinary action: It's moved its deposit rate from zero to - 0.1%. What does that mean exactly? It means that from now on, if European banks want to leave money at the ECB overnight, they'll be charged a 0.1% fee for the privilege. The goal is to encourage banks to lend more, and thus stimulate the Eurozone's wayward economy” says Jason Simpkins, veteran analyst, investment strategist, prognosticator and Assistant Managing Editor of the highly circulated newsletter; The Outsider Club. “You see”, he says “Europe's economy has been in terrible shape for some time now, struggling against low growth and deflation. GDP growth has stalled, registering just 0.2% in the first quarter. And this is after the ECB cut its benchmark lending rate in half to 0.25% in November. More troubling, inflation has softened to 0.5%, raising the specter of deflation. Hence the drastic action by the ECB. It's a Hail Mary. Unfortunately, it could backfire — not just in Europe, but the United States as well. Indeed, we may be on the brink of yet another financial crisis. If you squint hard enough, you can see logic behind negative interest rates. Rather than lose money by placing it on deposit with the ECB, banks will lend it out for even just a marginal return. However, there are obvious flaws in this strategy. The biggest is that the central bank is essentially forcing banks to lend out money that they weren't comfortable lending in the first place. As you probably recall, this was the genesis of the last financial crisis. U.S. banks issued a bunch of loans to unqualified borrowers who bought houses that they couldn't afford, until, eventually, the whole thing came crashing down. The same thing could happen in Europe. ” are pushing for higher inflation. While banks will have more funds to lend, there needs to be demand for such credit or else the funds would remain in the system and used in treasury operations. The crisis in Europe is to a large extend driven by low consumption and investment, which cannot be reversed easily by lowering interest rates, especially when the LTRO, which injected a lot of liquidity, did not quite succeed to turn the economy around. The present fallout of a weak euro may not be viewed favorably by USA or Japan, which could also tend to consider weaken-

ing their currencies at a time when the world economy is attempting to recover within the limited space being provided by global trade flows. For India the spillover effects could be of concern as the US Dollar looks set to gain. Given the ongoing tapering of the Quantitative Easing (QE) programme of the Federal Reserve Bank of USA, the easy supply of USD is on a reversal. When juxtaposed with the continued stimulus by the ECB and thereby higher Euro flows in the market, the US dollar is imminently expected to rise against the Euro. This was evidenced post the announcement of the ECB’s policy on that day as the Euro fell overnight from €1.36 per dollar to €1.37. The “rise in the dollar in international markets will impose pressure on Rupee to a slight extent and it may witness volatility with slight risks of depreciation against the USD if international forces dominate over the prevailing domestic factors (FII flows)”. Care believes that the “The Indian trade basket may contract: As of FY13, India’s exports to the European Union were about 1720% of the total export basket. In the event of growth in the Eurozone slowing down exports would tend to get affected – though the impact will not be too severe”.

We aspire to be the mother port for Eastern India," said S. S. Mishra, Chairman, Paradip Port Trust, while addressing an investor roadshow in Mumbai. Government-owned Paradip Port has announced that it will be investing Rs 16,000 crore in multiple projects over the next decade which will more than double its existing capacity to over 270 million tonne. Located between Haldia and Vishakapatnam Ports, this Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated port has come a long way. Apart from having the advantage of being in the hinderland of mineral rich states, it has seen immense growth in steel, thermal power and container cargo. The port is well connected by road as well as rail and has recently received the final forest clearance from the Centre to develop a 10 mtpa oil jetty and 5 mtpa multipurpose clean cargo berth.

The 52-year old port's current capacity stands at 108 mt and it is the sixth largest bulk handling port in the world. The projects include an investment of up to Rs 6,500 crore for the upcoming Western Dock, Mishra said. Six new captive berths of more than 10 mn tonnes per annum (tpa) capacity each will be developed as part of the Western Dock complex. Other major investments will include a Rs 1,357.02 crore outgo on the mechanisation of the container quays 1 and 2, a Rs 5,600-crore investment for an LNG terminal in two phases and Rs 1,651.09-crore towards other mechanisation of the eastern quays 1, 2, and 3, he said. Additionally, investments have also been lined up for dredging works, setting up a warehousing facility, truck terminal, a coal berth and a new iron ore berth, Mishra said. Majority of the works will be carried out through the public private partnership route. They are in different stages of development at present, right from technical studies to finalisation in some projects, he said.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitely is likely to present the first Budget of the Narendra Modi Government in early July and like other sectors, the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI), too, has come out with its wishlist. "We have urged the Government to increase the income tax slabs. Within the total slabs, we have also requested the Government to dedicate some amount for the MF investment only," AMFI Chairman Sundeep Sikka told reporters last Friday. Sikka, who heads Reliance Mutual Fund, said the industry has sought capital gain benefit for select MF products. Talking about other demands, AMFI Chief Executive H N Sinor said the industry body has requested for tweaking of Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS). "We have also requested for MF-linked pension plans, which will help in channelling retail money into capital market," Sinor said. The industry, which crossed Rs 10 lakh crore of average assets under management (AUM) in May, is hopeful of attracting more retail investors into the market going ahead. AMFI is the apex body of all the registered Asset Management Companies.

everal years after New Delhi, the country’s political capital, witnessed a transformation with the implementation of the Delhi Metro, the financial capital of Mumbai is set to experience a similar phenomenon with the imminent commissioning of the Versova AndheriGhatkopar (VAG) corridor of the Mumbai Metro. With equity participation from Reliance Infra and Veolia (a French transportation major), this PPP initiative has all the hallmarks of a game-changer for the city’s transportation and realty landscape. Many facts about the VAG have already been well documented : A project investment of USD 720 million, a fleet of 16 rakes with 4 fully air-conditioned coaches with an individual capacity of 375 passengers, travel time reduced to 21 minutes from the current 90 minutes between Versova and Ghatkopar - and of course, improved EastWest connectivity. However, the impact on the Mumbai realty market is likely to be far more pronounced. Transportation infrastructure economics have historical-

ly proven to have a positive impact on real estate values in a city like Mumbai – residential and commercial properties located close to transportation infrastructure tend to command a premium. Independent analysis of pricing reveal that proximity to a Metro station can single-handedly account for a 22% variation in land values, the other factors being location, distance of the land from the central point and income groups. On the back of the execution of a string of surface transport infrastructure projects – viz. the JogeshwariVikhroli Link Road (JVLR), the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and the Wadala-Chembur Monorail - the VAG corridor will further stoke the already buoyant Mumbai realty market. Each of these transportation infrastructure initiatives have had a tonic effect on the adjoining realty micro markets – for example the expected implementation of the Monorail had pumped up property prices in Chembur and Wadala by more than 100% in a short span of 4 to 5 years. This also applies to the SCLR, with which the Chembur micro-market again witnessed a perceptible price rise due. The areas which will benefit from Metro connectivity have already seen price rises of 400% over the past eight years, and this trend is set to continue with this imminent launch. A more detailed impact analysis follows below:

Near-Term Impact: Developers’ interest in projects near the Metro has been increasing since the start of construction. With the commencement of the project, the surrounding region will definitely experience a certain boom in terms of new offerings and price hikes. Rates on both the commercial and residential market will increase, as the properties of northern SBD, BKC and SBD central are the most preferred locations for investors.

MICRO-MARKET WISE IMPACT

CBD – Already losing out to BKC and SBD Central, SBD North will now also pose a strong contender as a business destination alternative to CBD. Absorption could reduce due to the trend of shifting away from CBD, which will lead to a correction in prices. SBD Central – SBD North might not be able to compete with BKC, but it will pose a challenge to SBD Central. Residential and commercial spaces in SBD North may start becoming preferred over SBD Central, especially when favourable prices are found in SBD North. SBD BKC – BKC will remain largely unaffected - even factoring in the effect of the Metro on SBD North, the advantages that BKC already has will keep it firmly in the #1 position. Absorption and prices will remain steady. SBD North – The maximum positive effect will be seen in SBD North, as the Metro runs across its entire width, covering practically all the important destinations. Absorption and supply are set to increase rapidly along with capital and rental values. The residential market in certain key areas will see a boost in activity, especially in Andheri West. Western Suburbs – The Metro will also have a positive impact on the Western suburbs due to the faster connectivity to the Eastern suburbs. Absorption rates and supply will increase marginally. Residential markets will also take off in areas closer to the Metro. Eastern Suburbs – Besides SBD North, this micro-market is going to see the maximum impact from the Metro. Rental and capital values are set to increase as absorption rates move up. The residential market in areas like Ghatkopar will derive the maximum benefit. Thane-Navi Mumbai – If at all, Thane and Navi Mumbai will see only a marginal positive impact, as commuting to the Western suburbs and SBD North and back becomes faster. Otherwise, these markets are will remain largely unaffected. The commissioning of the VAG corridor of the Metro is like to transform the dynamics of the Mumbai transportation, as well as its realty market. In conjunction with the SCLR and the Monorail, the Metro is certainly poised to become a major game-changer for realty investments in Mumbai.

Medium - Term Impact: Intra and inter-connectivity in SBD North and the Eastern suburbs will increase tremendously, given the capacity of 7 lakh passengers per day added by the Metro. Concurrently, East-West connectivity will benefit the maximum by this project, which will reduce the burden on JVLR and SCLR (the current East-West corridors). Travelling to the Eastern suburbs and Navi Mumbai from the Western suburbs and SBD North and back will become faster and more convenient. Among the series of mega-projects such as the Eastern Freeway, SCLR and Monorail in the past one year, the Metro is the

biggest so far. The combined effect reflect positively on Mumbai’s real estate market - the residential and retail markets in Andheri, Jogeshwari and Ghatkopar will witness tremendous growth, especially those near the Metro stations.

Long-Term Impact Long-term value capture would be possible through increase in FSI. If the proposal of granting FSI of 4 to areas near the Metro is approved, it will have a far-reaching impact and potentially transform the entire landscape of areas surrounding the Metro.

Hard Sell But Do Not Over Sell While Hiring For Your Startup

It is the team that matters at the end of the day. It is the biggest differentiator between an average and a superb company. Why is hiring such a big deal? While there are several reasons, one of the important ones is finding the right fit. A startup, especially in the early stage, is still figuring out lot of things – one being the exact business model itself. On the consumer durable front, cars and two wheelers need to be geared up to meet the onslaught of the monsoons. On the pharmaceutical side, this is an important season for some companies. Cough and cold remedies, start advertising rather heavily during this season. The entire range of cough and cold remedies, whether in the form of balms, rubs, lozenges or syrups, start aggressive marketing and sales exercise, with brands competing fiercely with each other. Without this splendid monsoon marketing exercise some of the hotels would have landed up closing down for a three month period during monsoon. It definitely is an illustration of using positioning to create a perception of a beautiful ‘Goa Experience’ in the rains and making it a much to be desired location and time. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose substantially on Friday (June 06, 2014) a net 109.80 points (1.46%) and closed at the 7583 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 7521 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.05 a.m. The index then declined and registered the day’s low at the 7497 points level at 11.22 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 7592 points level at 3.18 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 95 points and closed above the psychologically important 7550 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 40 were gainers, while 10 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices barring IT, metal and technology closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in realty, oil & gas and PSU stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 1.63%. This change is small but indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1113 were gainers, 496 were losers and 25 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Is above its 200-day average (at 6300) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7043 points level. The next support is at the 6846 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance at the 7497 and 7569 point’s level was crossed above in the previous session.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7558 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7523. Support (2) = 7463. Resistance (1) = 7618. Resistance (2) = 7653. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive white body candle on higher volumes. The body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive. Further, the index in above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of an up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the – DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength. We maintain high conviction Buy rating for Aurobindo Pharma (APL) and enhance the target price to Rs890 from Rs730 based on 11xFY16E EPS of Rs80.5. Though the revenues for Q4FY14 were in line with our expectations, EBIDTA margin and net profit exceeded our expectations. APL achieved strong growth of 130%YoY in US formulation segment led by generic Cymbalta. Entry into new segments of penam and peptides will help improve margins further. Sales growth driven by US formulations: APL’s formulation business (68% of revenues) grew by 76%YoY to Rs16.14bn from Rs9.18bn due to strong growth in the US market. US formulations grew by 130%YoY to Rs11.16bn from Rs4.86bn partly due to the strong performance of generic Cymbalta. Formulations in EU & RoW grew at 21%YoY and ARV formulations grew by 7%. APL’s API business (32% of revenues) grew by 13%YoY to Rs7.55bn from Rs6.67bn driven by 35% growth in SSP and 13% growth in non-beta lactam segments. The management expects growth momentum in Cymbalta to continue in Q1FY15 and expects entry of two more players. Attractive valuations & key risks: We have revised our EPS estimates for FY15 and FY16 upwards by 33% and 21% respectively due to strong formulation growth in the US led by generic Cymbalta. At the CMP of Rs639 the stock trades at 9.4x FY15E EPS of Rs68.3 and 7.9x FY16E EPS of Rs80.5 and 6.6x FY17E EPS of Rs96.9. We maintain Buy rating on the scrip with a target price of Rs890 based on 11x FY16E EPS of Rs80.5 with an upside of 39.3% from CMP. Key risks to our assumptions are delay in integration of acquired Actavis formulations business and regulatory risks for its various manufacturing facilities.

EMKAY CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON TATA CHEMICALS CMP: Rs. 336

Q4FY14 results were below expectations primarily due to losses for the fertilizer segment on account of non clarity on above cut off production. APAT stood at Rs 786mn lower than our estimates of Rs 1.7bn. Restructuring of Magadi operations undertaken in the current quarter. Management has decided to mothball its premium ash Magadi plant operations with a view to ensure cash profitability. Management has taken further write offs to clean the balance sheet in Q4FY14 which led to an EO of Rs 13bn for Magadi restructuring, UK restructuring cost and reduction in value of investments. We have introduced our FY16E and believe that the restructuring pain could be coming to an end and management focus will now shift on debt repayment. Maintain Buy with a revised target price of Rs 370. Non clarity on above cut off production impacted profitability: Q4FY14 consolidated revenues at Rs 37bn were up 9%yoy and in line with our estimates. The inorganic chemical segment revenues stood at Rs 21.2bn up 14.7%yoy and marginally ahead of estimates. Restructuring of non profitable operations approaching completion: With a view to ensure long term viability of the business, the company had restructured its UK operations in the early part of FY14. As per the earlier guidance, the company has announced plans to restructure its non profitable Magadi operations by mothballing its high energy cost, premium ash Magadi facility, which will lead to a reduction of ~200 employees. The company has taken the necessary write offs in the current quarter (~Rs 13bn) and expects very small restructuring related costs in FY15. The restructuring efforts thus are coming to an end with focus now shifting on debt repayment.De-leveraging of the balance sheet next catalyst, maintain Buy With the restructuring efforts coming to an end, the management is now focused on repayment of debt. ife much more meaningful with a baby This book is a hearty delight for booklovers, as life here rotates mostly inside and around a bookstore called Island Books, with its owner’s house located above. Among the many memorable characters is a baby, Maya. She has turned up as an 25-monthold in a pink ski jacket, sitting between the rows of shelves with a book in her hand, at closing time. Pinned to a doll the baby has brought along is a note from the mother asking him to care for the baby named Maya. A.J. Fikry, the owner, is a recluse of a man, who barely manages to take care of himself. Down and out with depression after the death of his pretty, young wife who is killed while driving back to their home on Alice Island. She was probably speeding to catch the last automobile ferry. A.J. is very remorseful and feels he should have gone and dropped the author home that fateful night instead of allowing her to do it. The bookstore was his wife’s idea, and dreams get further shattered when he passes out after polishing off a bottle of wine only to wake up and find that a rare book, Tamerlane, has gone missing from its high security climate controlled glass case.Returning from a run, he stumbles upon Maya sitting in his store and promptly changes her diaper (a twenty minute exercise) before taking her across to Police Chief Lambiase, another adorable character in this book. A.J. presents the baby to the police officer. ‘Someone left this in the store,’ A.J. whispers so as not to wake Maya who has fallen asleep in his arms…’ Do you know anything about child care?’ Lambiase asks. ‘It’s only for the weekend. How hard can it be? I’ll call my sisterin-law. Anything she doesn’t know, I’ll Google.’ By the time they arrive at the apartment, Maya is full-on crying, a sound somewhere between a New Year's Eve party horn and a fire alarm. A.J. deduces that she is hungry,

but he has no clue what to feed a twenty-five-month old. He pulls up her lip to see if she has teeth. She does and she uses them to try to bite him.You can read this book for its gentle story and for its language. There is an Indian connection, A.J. is Ajay! Lambiase keeps dropping by at Island Books and to justify these visits, he buys books which he then reads because he doesn't like wasting money. A.J. has met at the most

They keep discussing writers and A.J. keeps upgrading him to many better authors who he himself favours. He also exchanges pleasantries with Maya, picking her up whenever he can. 'No, I didn't mean to offend you,' the person had said and then the flip-flops had backed their way to the door, leaving without making a purchase.Reading about A.J. taking Maya in a stroller in the evening, reading to her in the night until she falls asleep, tending to her when she joins kindergarten, and contracts chickenpox brings out a whole deal of caring in the heart and mind. The romance between Amelia Loman, who markets books for Knightley Press, and A.J. is the result of an association sustained by her more than by A.J. She is four inches taller than him: That spring Amelia takes to wearing flats and finds herself making more sales calls to Island Books than the account, strictly speaking requires. If her boss notices, he does not say. Publishing is still a gentleperson's business, and besides, A.J. Fikry is carrying an extraordinary number of Knightley titles, more than nearly and other bookstore in the Northeast corridor. The ‘other woman’ syndrome on TV

here was a time when Hindi cinema was obsessed with the portrayal of ‘the other woman’ in popular films like ‘Silsila’, ‘Chandni’ ‘Arth ‘, ‘Souten’ and ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ but now it seems that the character of the other woman has filtered down to the small screen in popular shows like Mouli Ganguly in ‘Kya Hua Tera Vaada’, Pooja Pihaal in ‘Pavitra Rishta’, Ayesha Kapoor in ‘Bade Ache Lagte Hain’, Padmini Kolhapure in ‘Ekk Nayee Pehchaan’. What is it that the ‘other woman’ clicks in the minds of the viewers and sets the ratings of the shows spiralling. We spoke to a cross-section of the TV industry about this new trend. Popular producer Manish Goswami of shows like ‘Kitty Party’, ‘Parampara’, ‘Daraar’, ‘Sarkaar’ reflects, “ This trend is a mirror of the society that we live in today, especially the youth and newly married young couples who are

promiscuous and this reflects in the shows we are making and the audiences identify with such shows and characters because that’s what they see in the environment around them. I hope this trend doesn’t continue but as long as the TV audience is growing, this trend will continue.”

Poonam Dhillon, popular Sharada of ‘Ek Nayee Pehchaan’ says, “Padmini will be in a glamorous look as compared to my homemaker role and I am sure the audiences will like her debut in television as much as they liked her in films.” Rajan Shahi, popular producer of shows like ‘Bidaai and 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ takes a different stand and says, “One swallow doesn’t make a summer and if the other woman features in one or two shows it doesn’t mean there is a trend.”

Modi’s ‘toilets first’ stand vindicated

ocial media enthusiasts had deemed it as the ‘funniest video ever’ when John Oliver made a mockery of Indian Politics and particularly Bharatiya Janata Party’s election manifesto. Oliver dished out ‘witty’ remarks like “Wow! That’s a bold move, coming out as protoilet” or “So, who are you gonna vote for? Modi.Why? Because he appeared to me as a hologram and told me he’d give me a toilet,” and for many it was ‘hilariously funny.’ The video went viral and with it the ill-placed sarcasm aimed to belittle Modi’s poll plank. While the lesserviewed Oliver’s spiel wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously, it surely provided for rather mediocre entertainment. That it became hugely viral espoused the fact that most viewers completely missed the point. Satire is associated with verbal onslaughts that don’t quite qualify for penal action but risk being starkly insensitive to culture and gender issues. But then, for Oliver as with an equally-insensitive viewership, the satire was at worst … funny. Oliver and most of his giggly viewership were unaware of the impending risks that half of India’s population –a whopping 1/12th of the world’s – has to face while venturing out in the open at odd hours of the night or early morning for some private time in a wholly unsafe public space. So, the promise of ‘a toilet in every home’ may not feature on a US politician’s list of poll planks, it is the need of the hour for a country like India where every house does not have a toilet of its own. It’s of little wonder then that Narendra Modi, the-then Prime Ministeral candidate had earlier last year said that ‘Toilets were needed more than temples,’ in a statement that hit the nail on the head. Recently, when two minor Dalit girls were found hanging from a tree in Badaun District in Uttar Pradesh, the entire nation was horrified and Modi’s concerns vindicated. Reports confirmed that both the girls were raped and injury marks were found on their bodies too. The girls were sisters and abducted by the perpetrators when they were on the way to relieve themselves in the fields. This rape once again highlighted the fact that there is a dearth of public toilets and proper sanitation in India and that, the worst affected with women who were at the highest risk. The sad fact is this is not a case in isolation. There have been many such cases reported across nation, in the past, when a vulnerable target has been abducted, raped and/or murdered by crime perpetrators when s/he goes to relieve herself in the open fields. Last year, United Nation released a report suggesting around 53 per cent of India’s population still defecate in the open. And, it is not just rural areas; cities too contribute to this huge percentage highlighted in the UN report. Having to fear for one’s safety every time a person needs to answer nature’s call should not be a ‘regular’ occurrence. But, in rural areas where one has to go searching for a deserted farms or fields or wait for it to get dark to relive oneself in a nearby jungle, safety is always compromised and the one’s at the highest risk continue being women and children. A while back, the founder of the Sulabh sanitation movement Bindeshwar Pathak reportedly wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi detailing how the number of

rapes can be brought down by just building toilets for women who make themselves vulnerable to attacks by defecating in the open. “This is the only measure as they do not have toilets in the home and they have to go outside, even at night. If toilets are going to be built then our women would be safer,” Pathak said addressing a section of the media. Pathak, while attending a hygiene conference by the Institution of Public Health Engineers, also suggested that he would appeal to the PM to increase government funds meant for sanitation. “The funds allocated at present are not at all adequate. I would request him to end open defecation in the country in the next five years,” he said. Adding to it he also said that “Many girls don't go to school because they have no toilets meant for them. There are around 50 diseases, which are caused to poor sanitary practises. All this can be eliminated.” He said he is ready to offer advice and other kinds of support, which the government needs to build toilets. Earlier in February 2014, PM Modi, while campaigning in Kolkata, West Bengal, pointed out a worrying fact that only 60 per cent of the schools in West Bengal have toilets for girls. Although West Bengal State Government claimed that 82 per cent of the schools have separate toilets for girls, data acquired from the District Information System for Education (DISE), a central data collection set up of the Ministry of Education, even though the state does have around 74.9 per cent toilets for girls in school, only 59 per cent are functioning. Concurrently, news reports in January 2013 suggested that 30 per cent of the schools in Gujarat don’t have functional girls’ toilets. But according to the DISE data, 97 per cent of the schools in Gujarat have girls’ toilet and all of them are in functioning condition. There are several other reasons why immediate at-

tention should be given to sanitation and toilet facilities in India. The UN report states, “Our research showed that sixyear-olds who had been exposed to India's sanitation programme during their first year of life were more likely to recognise letters and simple numbers on learning tests than those who were not,” said Dean Spears, lead author of the paper ‘Effects of Early-Life Exposure to Sanitation on Childhood Cognitive Skills’. The paper studies the effects on childhood cognitive achievement of early life exposure to India's Total Sanitation Campaign, a national scale government programme that encouraged local governments to build and promote use of inexpensive pit latrines. “This is important news, the study suggests that lowcost rural sanitation strategies such as India’s Total Sanitation Campaign can support children’s cognitive development,” Spears said. The study also suggested that open defecation is an important threat to the human capital of developing countries and that a program accessible to countries where sanitation development capacity is lower could improve average cognitive skills. “Open defecation lies at the root of many development challenges, as poor sanitation and lack of access to toilets impact public health, education and the environment, Manager of the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Project Jaehyang So reportedly said. An immediate, interim solution is to ensure access to restroom facilities in public places, including during the night. The long-term solution to homelessness must be to ensure adequate housing.” In May 2012, in Oregon, a US Jury awarded two workers a compensation of $332 K for not being provided with ‘an on-site toilet.’ The workers who claimed they were forced to urinate in a bucket have been awarded $332,000 after a jury found they were fired for complaining to Oregon regulators about the lack of an onsite toilet. The men performed mechanical work at Portland International Airport. Reportedly, the Juror said the company’s treatment of the men was ‘definitely despicable.’ The Juror also stated she and other jurors believed that having easy access to a toilet was ‘a basic human right.’

On similar lines, just earlier this May, in Mumbai, a Consumer Court penalised local Western Railway for failing to providing free and accessible toilets for women commuters on railway stations. Reportedly, in 2007, the complainant was humiliated and abused when she requested to use the railway staff toilet at Dadar Railway Station after she started menstruating on a local train. According to the complainant, she was on a local train on January 3, 2007 when she started menstruating. So, she alighted on Dadar Railway Station and desperately began to look for a toilet. She was informed about a toilet near the booking office counter on the footbridge. But, the toilet was locked and none of the railway staff at the station could help her. Unable to wait any longer, she requested the staff if she could use the facility provided to them. But she was refused by the staff and was told that they were afraid she would plant a bomb in the toilet. Apparently, it was only when the chief booking supervisor arrived at the scene after 35 minutes, did he allow her to use the toilet. The woman took the matter to Consumer Court which held that Western Railway was guilty of deficiency in service for not providing free and accessible toilets for women commuters and directed the Western Railway to pay Rs 25,000 in compensation to the woman. Last year, in August 2013, two women journalists - Nitali Sarmah and Sulakshana Mithi Kachari - from Gauhati filed a PIL asking court to direct government agencies to maintain separate toilets for women in all locations under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The Gauhati High Court on basis of this PIL issued notices to the state government, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to respond to the PIL that appealed for adequate arrangements of separate public lavatories or toilets for women in the city. The two journalists, referring to data accessed through RTI applications, informed the court that there were toilets, constructed by the GMDA and run by Guwahati Naba Udya Society, an NGO, at Machkhowa, Tarun Ram Phukan Park, Nehru Park, State Zoo, Chandmari, Ulubari and Silpukhuri. But there were no separate toilets for women. When asked through RTI applications, the GMC had informed that there was a toilet inside Fancy Bazar market and at Adabari bus terminus, too, but without separate facility for women. The situation is no better in the nation’s capital. Reports suggest, in June 2013, there were 5,383 public toilets for 17 million citizens and, of them, there were just 391 toilets earmarked for women. Rape is a serious issue and, back in India, ensuring a safe and secure toilet is within reach of each and every woman is a gargantuan task. On the importance of toilets, the Prime Minister is on the right track. However, implementation holds the key to ensure safety of women. Each state will need to pull up its socks and ensure the basics are provided. And, this applies to all, even states not ruled by the BJP…UP and Maharashtra for instance. (With Prerna Pandey)

Underground sewer project eludes rural Bhayandar By Suresh Golani

illagers residing in the rural parts of Bhayandar (West) are up in arms against the unjustified tax imposed on them in the form of 'Sewage Facility' tax by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), despite the fact that the Underground Sewerage Project is to be implemented only for the urban localities in the twin-city. The MBMC had awarded a multi-crore contract for laying underground sewer lines in the twin-city (excluding rural areas). However, due to technical reasons, the rural and coastal areas including Rai, Murdha, Morva, Pali, Chowk and Uttan villages were

not included in the scheme. Describing the tax as unjustified, NCP group leader, Bernard D’Mello said, “I have already submitted a resolution under Rule-J of the BPMC Act to be taken up in the upcoming General Body meet. The tax should either be rolled back or the deprived areas must be granted an alternate development package.” Designed on a completely decentralised system across 10 zones, the scope of work includes underground sewerage facilities in a radius of 24 sq.km. area including laying a network of 107 kms of sewer lines and commission of 10 pumping stations supported by an equal number of sewage treatment plants.

ays after most of the schools reopened for their new academic session, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) woke up to the existence of illegally operating private schools in its jurisdiction. Like an annual ritual, the administrative head of MBMC’s Education Department, B.M. Mohite, released a list of un-recognised primary schools on Saturday. The list carries two names -- Chatrapati Shahu Vidyalaya, a Marathi medium primary school in Penkarpada and King George School, English medium primary school in the posh Kanakia Complex of Mira Road. Interestingly, both these educational institutions had been featured in last year's list of illegal schools, exposing the unwill-

ingness of the MBMC in taking stern action against habitual offenders who continue to play with the future and life of students. Urging parents to refrain from enrolling their children into unregistered private schools, Mohite said, “Once we find that the schools are accepting admissions despite our warnings, we will issue closure notices to the managements and those who fail to comply will face police action.” However, the Education Department, which is empowered to initiate criminal proceedings under Sections 420 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code against erring school managements, has failed to do so. While the names of illegal primary schools have been declared, the list of secondary schools is yet to come out, officials said.

arendra Modi was sworn-in as Prime Minister on Monday 26 May, with an initial Cabinet of about 45 Ministers. The portfolios were announced later by a Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué as per the practice. Already, comments have started about whether the Cabinet team is competent etc, etc. I think it is misplaced. The people have elected the BJP to power and not only the BJP, in this election it was a personal vote for Narendra Modi – that goes without saying. Whether some of us like it or don’t like it, that is a different matter. The performance will be of Narendra Modi and it has to be judged on that basis. As far as the Cabinet is concerned, he has innovated a new device, by which he has taken senior colleagues of the party into the Cabinet, but given them limited responsibility, considering their seniority, their age, etc. On the other hand, he has appointed a number of Ministers of State from the younger lot in areas which need a lot of work, like, power, coal, petroleum, etc. This is a matter of management. Probably during the election campaign a lot of issues were raised about non-delivery of targets in infrastructure and other areas. He wants to ensure that those targets are met through younger Ministers who can be overseen by the Prime Minister’s Office. He has appointed his trusted lieutenant Arun Jaitley as the Finance Minister and naturally he will lean heavily onto Arun Jaitley for advice. At this stage, to comment whether this Cabinet is good or bad or indifferent doesn’t make sense. As we all know in politics, first of all, all regions have to be represented, people from all the States have to be taken, seniority and ‘juniority’ has to be kept in consideration. All Cabinets are formed in that manner, right from Independence till now, and after the 1980s things have become more complicated because of many other castes making their claim, unlike earlier. So, to balance all regions, religions, castes, etc – it is a difficult task. And whoever is the Prime Minister does it in his own way. He has done it in his own way and one cannot understand how that becomes a subject matter of debate. After six months or 12 months, actually 12 months, one can reasonably make an assessment whether this Government is moving in the right direction or not, but to start commenting within three days

She has been elected; she is in the Rajya Sabha. She is an MP and every MP is entitled to become a Minister. We can’t sit in judgment, whether this Minister is competent to handle this portfolio or not. This is a new innovation. If we take out a list of Ministers in the Congress Government, they will be less qualified than this. But that doesn’t mean their performance is bad. Nobody has said education makes a person intelligent. It is a sad comment. The people whom we think are illiterate in the villages they have elected this Government, so what about that? The Congress Party especially should not talk like this, because it is a political party. And I understand non-political people like Madhu Kishwar talking but the Congress Party talking like this is not at all proper because after Jawaharlal Nehru no member of the Nehru- Gandhi family is educated up to graduation level. That doesn’t mean they are not intelligent or they can’t run the country. I don’t say that. Indira Gandhi ran the country very well. Rajiv Gandhi

came before people. And who has said and from where this sudden logic has come that a person who is elected by a majority has to stand a test of being an academician. Tomorrow you will put some panel of teachers to assess a person’s education – that this person should be Prime Minister or not. Who said so? That is not according to the Constitution. I stand for election, I win, I run the country within the Constitution. That’s it. Similarly the choice of Principal Secretary Nripendra Misra. I happened to know about him since the days when Mulayam Singh was Chief Minister of UP and he was his Principal Secretary. He was an outstanding officer, upright, competent, no nonsense. I am surprised how Narendra Modi thought of him and brought him out of retirement to appoint him. It is a good sign because he will give good leadership to the PMO, but the law had to be amended because he has been the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) between 2006 and 2009, and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, forbade a Chief of the regulatory body from "further employment under the central and state governments". So they have amended the law by ordinance. Again the Congress Party said what was the hurry? The Principal Secretary can’t be appointed three months after Parliament comes into session. It is urgent. Now if the Congress says it is wrong to appoint him, again it is very petty.

The legal “hitch” in his appointment may turn out to be a mere trifle, but one fanned no doubt by hopefuls left out in the cold. Misra, a UP cadre officer of the 1967 batch, is highly experienced and honest babu who retired as Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in 2009. He was Telecom Secretary in UPA-1 and a crucial witness in the 2G scam case. Observers have been right that Modi will choose former Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajit Doval as his National Security Advisor. From the backrooms of intelligence work to the limelight has been a long journey for the former Kerala cadre IPS officer. The fact that both have been handpicked by Modi and vetted by

Every Government chooses its Ministers, its officials, the key positions and I do not understand how Opposition party and other parties should comment on that and how it will help. They could comment if they have some objection about a person, if they have some charges against him or her, it’s something, which can’t be a case with Nripendra Misra. And the Congress Party, the best it can do is to train its 44 MPs, divide the subjects and when Parliament opens, subject by subject attack the Government on substantive issues, not on whether some MPs are graduates or not, these are all childish matters. If you want to be a serious Opposition, the Congress should act like one. The Congress is a serious party. It is a very old party. The Congress knows the game. They know how to be in Government, they know how to be in the Opposition. They have been in both. Certainly, there is no reason to get so demoralised and start talking about irrelevant things. That will not help. Apart from the Congress, unfortunately, there is a vacuum of the Left. The number of the MPs of the Left are negligible. However, one thing about the Left is good that even if they have five MPs, they speak their mind, they stick to their line, they stick to their policies and are serious about what they are talking. The presiding officer of both the Houses should give them an adequate chance to raise their views. Unfortunately, in the Houses we have a system of duration and timing of speech according to the strength of the party. But we have a lot of parties with one member, two members, three members. They must have their say. We do not know what their views are – they may support the Government, they may oppose the Government. But Parliament is a matrix. Jawaharlal Nehru used to sit throughout the day in Parliament and when people used to ask him why do you spend so much time here instead of doing your work, he said by hearing MPs I keep my pulse on the state of the country. That was his honour to Parliament. For him, Parliament was a forum which helped him to understand the country. Now, unfortunately we see people like to devote less and less time to Parliament, the session timings are reduced. The number of hours of debates are reduced. There is a lot of shouting and counter shouting. Nothing comes out of it. I hope that will be a thing of past.

That has happened in the last Parliament but I hope there will be a new beginning. There is an old saying in Parliament, the Government will have its way, but the Opposition must have its say. If you do not allow the Opposition to have its say, then the Opposition will not allow the Government to have its way. This was in the past. In the last few years, MPs troop to the well of the House, this does not add to the credibility of Parliament. What we need is a proper Parliamentary procedure. I think the Government should call a meeting of all party leaders and figure out a way of functioning so that Parliament can use its time properly. After all, a lot of public money is spent, let business be done properly. There may be contentious issues. That is okay. Wherever there are Bills, there is a Standing Committee where all parties are represented. They go into all the Bills. Everything is done properly. However, I think I should not say the freedom of the press is of course very good, but the way the TV channels are talking does not help anybody. I have seen the channels talking to Nawaz Sharif. You cannot discuss external affairs and security issues on the TV channels. You cannot conduct the Indo-Pak negotiations on the TV channels. And, it is a very sad way, something should be done about it, but only the Press Council can do it, it is not the job of Parliament or the Government. But something should be done where whoever is on stage in the country, Government, Opposition, Parliament, press, they should make a positive contribution. You may agree or disagree. This is the greatness of democracy. You may disagree but it must be done in a proper way. To disagree does not mean you have to be disagreeable. You can talk in polite language. Here I see less light is shed and more heat is generated which does not help. I only hope all the Opposition people also take their responsibility seriously instead of getting demoralised that the BJP has got a big majority. Just as a reminder, in 1952, 1957, 1962 the Congress always had more than 300 and 350 people but the Opposition never felt demoralised. Even 5-6 members of the Socialist party would raise their subject, the CPI would raise their issue. Today, what is the reason to get demoralised? I do not know. But I suddenly see that people are losing patience and raising irrelevant issues. Zeal is more important than arguing the case properly.

again failed to score from the penalty spot in the sudden death and they managed to score the decisive winning goal through stopper back Anthony Fernandes to trigger celebration among his teammates and supporters. Sellebrity have to blame themselves for the loss. They showed good teamwork and dominated the proceedings against the experienced Dadar side. They also created the better goal-scoring chances, but were not able to transform their superiority into goals and quite rightly paid the penalty. After three weeks of preparation in Miami, Portugal and in the heat chambers of St George’s Park, England arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for the meat of their summer. The last time the two sides met was two years ago, when the Italians knocked England out of UEFA EURO 2012 on penalties after a 0-0 stalemate in which Hodgson’s team were passed off the park. Unlike last time, a goalless draw would not result in a shootout lottery from 12 yards. Instead it would give England a

solid base on which they could go into their next games against Uruguay and Costa Rica. But there is certainly no suggestion from the England camp that a draw will be good enough.

ATTACK “We never ever discuss [playing for a draw],” the England coach said. “Steven Gerrard has never heard me once before a game say, ‘Listen lads, a 0-0 might suit us today’. ARIS: Rafael Nadal clinched his ninth French Open and 14th career Grand Slam title on Sunday with a brutal 3-6, 7-5, 62, 6-4 victory over a battling Novak Djokovic. The world number one also became the first man to win five Roland Garros crowns in succession as the 28-year-old took his record at the tournament to 66 wins against just one defeat.

His tally of 14 majors equals the mark of Pete Sampras and puts him just three behind the all-time record of Roger Federer who is almost five years older.
