Your Money Is Good Rumours spark panic as shopkeepers refuse to accept soiled notes, citing a new rule from Jan 1, which says ‘Banks will not accept soiled notes or notes with anything scribbled on them.” RBI rubbishes rumour, says banks will accept them

By Deepak Sahijwala

P

anic prevailed yesterday morning, as rumours flew fast and wide after a few shopkeepers in the city refused to accept soiled notes or notes with anything scribbled on them saying that banks would stop accepting them after January 1, 2014. While some rushed to banks to deposit their cash, others fell prey to smart money changers, across the city who reportedly made a quick buck out of the situation by exchanging such notes at a 10% discount; that meant you got back Rs 450 for a soiled or scribbled for a Rs 500 note. And as the panic stricken public called newspersons to verify such claims, the ADC called Alpana Killawala, Principal Chief General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India early last morning. She clearly refuted the rumours as baseless, saying, “There is no such rule and banks will definitely accept such notes.” Attributing the confusion to an instruction issued on August 14, 2013 to banks advising them to instruct their staff not to scribble or write on the body of the banknotes since it was observed that the bank officials themselves were in the habit of writing on banknotes which went against the Reserve Bank’s Clean Note Policy, she felt it was misread. She also assured this newspaper that a formal clarification by the RBI would be released later in the day. That happened and later in the day, the RBI officially clarified through a press release that, “In the wake of rumours circulating in the market that from January 1, 2014, banks will not accept banknotes with anything written on them, the Reserve Bank has urged members of public not to fall prey to such rumours and to use their bank notes without any fear. The Reserve Bank of Vikas Sabnis India has clarified it has NOT issued any such instructions.” Clearly, this means ‘your money is good,’ soiled notes or scribbled ones. However, the central bank has reiterated that writing or scribbling on banknotes works against its Clean Note Policy, and has sought co-operation from all members of public, institutions and others in keeping the banknotes clean by not writing/ scribbling anything on them.

appy members of the Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association (AHAR) appreciated the Bombay High Court’s verdict which permitted restaurants and bars to remain open till 5 am today, thus setting aside the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s order of closing hotels and restaurants at 1.30 am. This came after the AHAR moved the court after the police said that they were firm on their stand of maintaining the 1.30 am deadline for hotels and bars, considering women’s safety and drink-driving cases. Last week, the state govern-

HC sets aside Police Commissioner’s decision to close hotels and restaurants by 1.30 am ment had extended the deadline for hotels and restaurants to serve food and liquor to patrons till 5 am on January 1. However, Mumbai Police Commissioner, Dr. Satyapal Singh on Monday said, “My views are very clear on the matter. For women’s safety and to prevent drink-driving

cases, among other things, I took this decision. Last year too, the deadline was 1.30am.” Based on this, the AHAR filed a petition in the HC asking the police to recall its order. Citing discrimination, the petition states that the deadline for five-star hotels and pubs is 3 am. It also claimed that

the state home department and excise department had issued circulars on December 19 and December 24 respectively, granting permission to hotels and restaurants to remain open till 5 am. “The circular, however, said that each hotel owner should obtain permission from the police commissioner. Hotels and restaurants have already spent a huge amount, arranged parties and sold tickets,” the petition stated. The association’s counsel Veena Thadani told the court, “They are allowed to remain open till 3 in the morning. Why this discrimination? This is a very elitist outlook. Are only the rich allowed to party and celebrate?” Public prosecutor D. A. Nalavade pointed out to the court, recent reports regarding Indian Mujahideen terrorist Yasin Bhatkal’s statement on the terror outfit planning nuclear bomb attacks in the country. The prosecutor also informed the court about seven alleged terrorists absconding from a jail in Madhya Pradesh, while arguing in support of the deadline. The court dismissed the arguments of the prosecutor and said, “Threat perception to the city will be there all the time. Not just on December 31.” Thadani also pointed out that the state home department in its circular dated December 19 had permitted hotels to continue parties till 5 am. Reacting to this, Justice Patel said, “If the home department, under which the police comes, has no problem with the celebrations going on till 5 am, then why is the police setting a deadline of 1.30 am.” However, the court while extending the deadline to 5 am, said that the hotels will have to give an undertaking stating that security inside the premises would be their responsibility. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

tatues of national heroes are constantly becoming victims of apathy and neglect in the jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). A classic example is that of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue installed in a traffic island at Kashmira Junction. The ornamental trees and bushes have been left to grow untrimmed, screening off the equestrian statue of the brave military genius, a brilliant strategist and great ruler. Thanks to the utter neglect by the Tree Authority (TA), the railings around the island are on the verge of collapsing, while the space has become a haven for hawkers and antisocial elements. Though officials claim to be carrying out regular trimming of trees, the activity is limited only prior to special occasions.

To ease their woes, the Information & Technology (IT) department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is developing a mobile app which is yet to be named officially, but is tagged as the ‘M app’. ven after a fortnight, extortionist Ramchandra Chatri continues to call up Salman Khan’s lawyer Dipesh Mehta and demand money right under the noses of the Crime Branch and Mumbai police officials. “Ramchandra’s mother is still working as a servant in our house. I have been taking care of the family since the past two decades now. I have paid for the medical expenses of his father who is suffering from cancer. His sister’s education expenses are also taken care of. I am deeply hurt that a child who has grown up in front of me is now after my life,” said advocate Dipesh Mehta, narrating his dilemma. According to Mehta, Chatri’s father, Ram Bahadur Chatri was working as a security guard till some years ago. Mehta had helped Ram Bahadur with accommodation in Bandra when he had come to Mumbai. Since that time he had seen Chatri growing in front of him. “He used to visit my office in his spare time. I had been searching for a suitable job for him. I am surprised that he had thought of making me the target,” added Mehta. Because of the increasing extortion calls from Chatri, Mehta had even switched off his cell phone, but Chatri began calling up their driver, Rajesh Yadav, and speaking to Mehta. Chatri claims that he is not the mastermind in the racket and that the entire conspiracy to extort money was hatched by the Azad gang. “He behaves very weird at times. Initially, Chatri asked for money for his father’s treatment from me, but when I asked for the medical papers, he said that he could

not arrange for it. I called up the doctor and paid part of the money. But still he keeps on demanding money. Chatri, at times, pretends to be very caring and suggests I take extra police cover as I am on the hitlist of some Azad gang and they would cause me harm.” Mehta fears that Chatri has been out of his mind and has been coming up with fictitious names to put pressure on him. Mehta has even written a letter to the local cops stating that they are taking the matter too lightly. Till date, Chatri has been able to outsmart the Bandra police as well crime branch officials. All attempts to arrest him have proved futile. Surprisingly, Chatri had been able to keep track of investigators movements since day one. Even when his girlfriend was brought to the crime branch office for luring him into a police trap, he got wind of it and abused the girlfriend in front of the police officials over the phone. Sources from the police department claim that Chatri has been shifting base between Mumbai and Gujarat. The recent location of Chatri was in Mumbai but he is constantly changing his location, making it difficult for cops to locate him. Mehta has written a letter to the senior police inspector of Bandra police station in which he claims that the police have been taking the matter too lightly. The investigating officer is not even present in the court at the time of hearing of the case. When contacted, senior police inspector of Bandra police station said, “Our investigations are on the right track. We have made teams to nab the accused. I cannot comment further on the matter.”

brother for his tuitions on Monday evening, Kshitij was flying his kite outside his home. His father happened to see him and got angry. He then reprimanded Kshitij in front of the neighbours and tore his kite. Unhappy with his father’s

behavior, Kshitij went inside the house, took out his mother’s dupatta, tied it to the ceiling fan and hanged himself. When his mother returned with his brother later in the evening, she found Kshitij hanging. With the help of the neighbours, he was

n the last day of 2013, the city witnessed the death of a caregiver due to dengue. Dr. Sumedh Pazare, a 25-year-old resident doctor at the BMC run Nair hospital, succumbed to dengue on Tuesday morning after being admitted to the hospital on Saturday. “He was admitted on Saturday afternoon as he was experiencing symptoms like

fever with chills and his platelet levels were down. He was under treatment and there was an increase in his platelet count, but on Tuesday at around 8 am, he passed away because of dengue shock, which is a complication caused by dengue,” said a doctor from Nair hospital. “The doctor had a co-morbid condition of sickle cell trait, so the medicines that were given to him did not

work. It was because of the co-morbidity that he had internal bleeding as well. We did our best for him but he succumbed,” said Dr. Suhasini Nagda, Director, Major BMC run hospitals. The deceased was a first year resident doctor at the Preventive and Social Medicine department. He was a resident of Chandrapur and was posted at the urban health centre at Cheetah Camp, Shivaji Nagar at Mankhurd.

“We are taking precautionary measures and are trying to identify the source of the transmission of the virus. We are looking for breeding spots in the hospital and the hostel where the doctor used to live. But we can not say for sure how or from where he got dengue as there are many places from where he could have acquired this vector borne disease,” said Dr. Nagda. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Body found on tracks identified 18 days later Parents upset over interdepartmental delays By Zuber Ansari

E

ighteen days after the body of an unidentified boy was discovered on the railway tracks between Bhayander and Mira Road stations, the boy has been identified as 18-year-old Pravin Parihar, a collegian from Kandivli (East). The Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) had buried the body suspecting the boy’s death to be an accident. However, after the identification on Monday, the police stated that it will be exhumed. A prima facie probe has revealed that Parihar might have committed suicide. According to the Samta Nagar police, Parihar was studying in a Malad-based college and lived with his family at Hanuman Nagar in Kandivli (East). The police said that he was in a relationship with an 18-year-old girl from his college, who is a resident of Mira Road, and that his family was opposed to the relationship as the two belonged to different religions. According to the police, on December 12 Parihar met the girl at a Kandivlibased mall after which he went to Mira Road to drop her home. His parents tried to get in touch with him, but did not succeed. At night, he switched his cell phone off, after which his body was found on the railway tracks. The Vasai GRP circulated

the boy’s picture, but he could not be identified. Assuming that it was an accident, the Vasai GRP recorded a case of an accidental death and buried the body after a post mortem. Meanwhile, Parihar’s par-

Pravin Parihar died on Dec 12. ents registered a missing persons’ complaint with the Samta Nagar police. “After the boy’s picture reached the Samta Nagar police station, his parents identified him. Prima facie, it appears that the boy committed suicide. His body will be exhumed for further probe,” said an official from the Samta Nagar police. The police said that they are in the process of studying Parihar’s cell phone records and have learnt that he had exchanged maximum calls and messages with his girlfriend before his body was found.

The Aam Aadmi Party and Raju Shetti’s Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana may come together for the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly polls

By A Special Correspondent

R

iding high on the Delhi victory, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has started looking for possible political alliance in the state and has begun talks with the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS). The AAP and Raju Shetti’s SSS, an organisation fighting for farmers’ rights, were to come together for the forthcoming Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections. To take a call on the possible alliance, the leaders of both parties were to meet in Pune to discuss the details of the possible alliance. However, even before the talks could materialise, a remark by AAP state convener Anjali Damania strained the ties between the two parties. Damania had said that while the AAP would like to forge an alliance with the SSS, the latter should ensure transparency and should not deal with other parties. Against this backdrop, the final decision on a possible electoral tie-up between AAP and the SSS may be taken next week after a meeting between AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and SSS leader Raju Shetti. Shetti said that the meeting would include discussions on the AAP’s stand on various issues, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail, setting up of the National Drought Commission, 10year policy on export-import of agricultural produce and other issues related to agriculture. The political affairs committee of SSS had earlier met in Pune to chart out the

future course of action for the party. Talks between AAP and SSS have been going on for some time about a possible seatsharing arrangement for the upcoming general and state elections in the state. Kejriwal’s relations with Shetti have been cordial with both parties making it a point to support each other’s agitations.

Speaking to ADC, Shetti said, “We have heard that AAP is opposed to FDI in retail while we welcome it. Also, they have not made their stance about issues related to agriculturists very clear. I have not been able to talk to him (Kejriwal) after the Delhi elections, but we will have a meeting next week to take a final call”.

n an attempt to upgrade and enhance its existing healthcare infrastructure, the Mira Bhayandar Municpal Corpn (MBMC) has chalked out a unique programme to rope in private medical practitioners and health institutions to render their services. This was revealed by municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani, yesterday. In a bid to attract specialised doctors to civic

Healthier thinking at MBMC health institutions, the health department has decided to offer an attractive honorarium in return for their services. “This is our sincere effort to ensure availability of specialists in municipal hospitals, especially at the newly constructed one at Tembha in Bhayandar (West) where we are planning to start an Out Patient Department (OPD),” confirmed Kakani.

He added that proposals have been sent and meeting with doctors are being scheduled for next week. Apart from seven primary health posts, three sub-health centers, and a mobile health unit, the MBMC operates a 50-bedded hospital in the Poonam Sagar in Mira Road, while an OPD section is in the anvil at the new hospital in Bhayandar (West).

Ponder awhile… “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” — Peter Drucker

Congress may finally make known its choice A

PPARENTLY, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been unable to take a strong stand with regard to announcing her son Rahul Gandhi as the party’s nominee for the post of the Prime Minister. It is not easy for her to drop Dr. Manmohan Singh who has co-operated with her and followed her instructions for the last ten years. Dr. Manmohan Singh has made things easy for her: He has stated more than once that he welcomes Rahul as the party’s leader and that he would work under his leadership. He does not want to go of course, but evidently he is prepared to accept the inevitable. Sonia Gandhi knows about his wanting to cling on to the post and that may be one of the reasons why the Congress has still not taken a decision about its choice. However, there have been developments which will compel the Congress to take a decision. The Congress has lost assembly elections in five states and it could get only eight seats in the Delhi assembly. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi knows that she has got to take some damage control measures to save the party. Finance Minister Chidambaram has stated that it is time for the Congress to announce its choice. He would not have made this statement unless he was told to do so by the Congress President. There is a distinct possibility that Rahul Gandhi would be declared the party’s nominee for the post of the PM in the next few days. A great deal of significance is attached to the holding of the press conference by Dr. Manmohan Singh on Friday. There is speculation that he will announce his decision to step down – thus making it easy for the party to declare Rahul Gandhi as his nominee for the post of the PM.

I

T’S surprising how quickly the Narendra Modi-driven BJP juggernaut has lost momentum after the party lost out to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi assembly election. Not only did Modi disappear from the national media radar for more than a week after the counting day, party leaders have been sounding more and more peevish about Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to accept Congress’ support to form a government. Instead of trumpeting its stunning victories in the three states that went to polls along with Delhi, the BJP has gone into a deep sulk about failing to win Delhi, which actually was theirs for the taking but for AAP’s unexpected surge. What’s worrying the saffron party is that AAP could possibly damage its prospects in 30 to 40 urban constituencies all over the country which it hopes to snatch away from the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Kejriwal’s party could either help the Congress to squeeze through by eating into BJP votes in a three-way split; or it could win a chunk of those seats itself. Either way, it would mean that the BJP will not touch the magic figure of 200, which is what Modi needs to become the next prime minister. The urban seats over which there is a question mark now include those in Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Bhopal, Jaipur, Lucknow and of course, Delhi. Haryana too has become uncertain for the BJP. Kejriwal hails from Rhotak and is making waves as the local boy turned hero. And remember, the state borders Delhi so ripples from the capital are spreading fast. The BJP’s fears about AAP’s damage potential boiled over at its recent Modi-for-PM strategy meet in the capital. Kejriwal’s shadow loomed large over the discussions with most leaders who spoke at the gathering, including Modi himself, admitting that AAP posed a serious challenge to the party’s prospects in the 2014 elections. In fact, Modi was candid enough to warn against believing propaganda that those who voted Arvind Kejriwal for chief minister in Delhi would vote Narendra Modi for PM in the Lok Sabha elections. This is a misconception; he is believed to have said. People don’t change their voting pattern in back-to-back elections.

AAP going strong in Bengaluru

W

HILE the BJP is worried as a party about the AAP’s rise, there’s one leader who is filled with dread for personal reasons: Ananthkumar. He’s in real danger of losing his south Bengaluru seat. He faces two challenges now. One is from Nandan Nilekani who is set to fight for the seat as a Congress candidate. The other is the AAP threat. Kejriwal’s party has already launched a membership drive in south Bangalore and is recruiting volunteers in thousands. In fact, Bangalore turned out to be the second highest financial contributor to AAP, according to a recently published list of donations to the fledgling party. Surprisingly, Maharashtra was the highest, suggesting that areas like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur etc. could well be productive catchment areas for the AAP as there is increasing disenchantment in

Bihar. In fact, journalists started leaving because they had to get on with their day but Nitish seemed in no hurry to go. Some scribes remarked that political leaders turn to the media only when they are down in the dumps. Judging from Nitish’s tone and tenor that afternoon, he is certainly unsure about his political future. His Bihar package is stuck in Delhi. The Congress is having second thoughts about a tie-up with the JD (U) and has started reaching out to the RJD. Lalu Yadav is out of jail and seems to be riding a sympathy wave despite his conviction in the fodder scam. And Modi is snapping at Nitish’s heels. After flying high as Bihar’s development man, Nitish seems to be losing momentum in the crucial run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

What’s up Chidambaram?

ONGRESS circles were taken aback by finance minister P. Chidambaram’s recent comment that the party must declare a prime minister candidate for the Lok Sabha elections. Had he jumped on to the Rahul bandwagon to echo what he thinks is 10 Janpath’s view on the matter? Or was he pitching for himself? It is no secret that Chidambaram has become the main strategist for both the government and the party and is also Rahul’s chief advisor now that Digvijay Singh is out of favour. It was he who pushed for the government to order a probe into Modi’s ‘snoopgate’ scandal. He piloted the proposal at the cabinet meeting after briefing and persuading Arati R. An alternative to New Year’s Resolutions M

ANY of us fall into one camp or the other: the optimistic resolution-makers — who begin the year with energy and hope for positive change — and the cynical non-resolvers who sit on the sidelines and dismiss resolutions as delusional and doomed to be broken. But for those who see a value in yearend reflection and intention setting but don’t embrace the resolution model, I’d like to invite a slightly different approach — one that is both grounded in experience and constructively future-oriented. It has three steps: we celebrate our successes; we acknowledge our failures and disappointments; and we draw from both specific lessons that we want to take forward and apply in the New Year.

Celebrate success; Congratulate yourself!

Learn your lessons and apply them in daily life

Remember also to recognize the accomplishment of facing challenges and enduring hardship — simply coming through a hard time is a reason for celebration and can be a source After you have reviewed your year, make a of great learning. Jacques of all trades TRULY, one of the greatest players of the modern era, Jacques Kallis proved his mighty worth on the test scene, in the one dayers and also the T20s. With both his batting and bowling or fielding Kallis could walk into any cricketing team. He was largely a hard-working and silent accumulator while not big on being an entertainer. Unjustified statement IT is totally unjustified and uncalled for on the part of Abu Azmi, President of the Samajwadi Party, to have made a statement that Amitabh Bachchan has insulted North Indians by bonding with Raj Thackeray when he attended an MNS event, and added that he should tender his apologies to them. Amitabh Bachchan has only bonded with Raj Thackeray after years and has never made any statement against North Indians. Therefore the question of insulting them doesn’t arise. Though Raj Thackeray had humiliated Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, they have never taken it seriously. In fact they had even shared a healthy relationship with the late Balasaheb Thackeray. If Raj Thackeray had humiliated Abu Azmi in 2009, it is his problem. Sorry Abu saab. This is not the way to vent your anger against the MNS. — K V Raman, Malad

Eliminate water mafia If you have the determination you can do wonders. People may laugh at the financial burden that the Delhi Jal Board will face when 700 litres of water are supplied free to the people. But I have a simple question. Where were the water tank owners and the water mafia getting their water from when ordinary people were being deprived of this basic need? In Kalyan, Dombivali and in many parts of Maharashtra people do not get water even for a few hours in a day. But at the same time water tank owners will provide you with as many litres of water as you need, but at a price! The water mafia and greedy middlemen need to be stopped. We need to cut red tapism, bureaucracy, mafia and middlemen, and put in a simple system. Arvind Kejriwal has taken an initiative and we should let it work as long as it does. — Crishna S. 2014 is finally here, and youngsters hope to usher in change, especially when it comes to education in the country. Here’s a look at what some city youngsters are hoping and wishing for in the New Year PRIVATE CAPITAL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Rubina Chowdhari PROVIDING higher education to every graduate is not something that the Indian Government can afford to do right now. Only around four per cent of our total budget expenditure is splurged upon education (40 per cent is allocated to defence). But we cannot complain about that. That problem was solved by many politicians and money launderers when they opened these ‘private’ education institutes, which provided fair to excellent quality education at exorbitant prices. We all doubt the transparency in the political operations of these politicians and hence it’s safe to say that these private institutes might be nothing but dumping grounds of cash. If private money is put into the veins of government educational institutes, who can’t say if the problem will be solved? But we can be assured of better transparency. Investors and entrepreneurs can be encouraged to a great deal by the idea of profit making. Education sector can be looked at as something more than just a sphere of philanthropy by these millionaires. The dice must be rolled on this one. Money will not guarantee education but it will sure bring better education.

PRACTICALITY NECESSARY

WHAT IS SOUND ENGINEERING?

I am currently in the second year of a degree course in Hotel Management, but do not want a job in the hotel industry. What alternative jobs can I look for after my degree? I have basic knowledge of computers. I also cannot continue further studies after this degree. What are my options? —Neeta Patil Do not leave the present course. Learn and hone your skills. A hotel management course cannot be studied through correspondence mode. After completing the course you can apply in airlines, spas, educational institutes, amusement parks, clubs, travel companies, canteens, cruise liners, and so on.

I am a Science student giving my HSC and CET exams with PCM as my main subjects. I wanted to know a little about Sound Engineering? I like Physics. What are my options besides Engineering and BSc? —Hridya Bhatia

Sound engineering involves editing audio through creative, mechanical or digital means. It involves setting up, operating and maintaining a wide array of electrical equipment involved in television or radio broadcasts, concerts, plays, musical recordings, television shows, movies, etc. To become a sound engineer you should have be either a Graduate in B.Sc. [Physics/Electronics] after which you are eligible to pursue a Diploma in Sound/Broadcast Engineering or opt for a B.E. [Sound Engineering] after clearing the relevant entrance exam after Class 12. You can also take up Nuclear Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology and other such subjects.

I am 24 years old and have passed my B.Com in 2008 with 43 per cent. I want to pursue a short term course that will help me further my career. What are my options? —Pradnya Gaikwad You can opt for one-year part-time or correspondence program in hotel management, travel and tourism, computers, designing, graphic and animation and so on. What changes do you expect in the education system in the New Year? Continued from pg 13 « give to get marks. This system works on a ‘higher the marks, greater the intelligence’ concept. This concept came under severe scrutiny when students buckled under pressure and committed suicide. When films like ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and ‘3 Idiots’ came out there was a cry for a better education system, which focused more on practical knowledge rather than textbook information. As the New Year arrives, I hope to see a more useful education system. Practicality should be given more preference over bookish matter. I want to see the extra-curricular matter like sports and art given more importance in a student’s academic life. I personally find the concept of exams to be disturbing for a student. The system justifies itself by stating that every student gives the same paper and this ensures uniformity and equality. I find this justification absurd. I want a system where exams should not entirely determine the intelligence of a student.Where something like an‘aptitude test’ should be made compulsory to find out a student’s strong subjects and work on making it stronger, rather than focusing on his weakness. Because if you tell a fish that it can’t walk, it will live its entire life thinking that it’s stupid.

CHOOSING YOUR FIELD

Nikita Wadhwan OUR experience of the fascist education where gargantuan answers are more preferred than brevity, where an inarticulate reply is preferred over eloquent ones. Students know quite well that all those years in school and college can never prepare them for the overzealous and competitive world out there, we all know that our education system is not equip to do anything literally. It’s high time we move ahead with the times. Our generation has always encouraged bold and new ideas, proof - AAP. It’s time learning involved more practical

knowledge than theoretical. No one is in interested how the kings and the queens ruled, bold and creative subjects like film making, brand building etc. are more interesting to the students. Such subjects give them a sneak peek into how the industries are functioning, helps them explore new creative mediums. Students today are bored of treading on traditional path and opting for alternatives and every student has the right to nurture his/her 100 per cent capabilities and reach its maximum potential, in any field they like.

student as dooms day. Well to start off, change is the essence of life and it is high time education undergoes it fair share. When exams are taken into consideration every student starts getting nightmares, imagines letting down their parents’ aspirations by underperforming and makes a bigger mistake by stressing it out. Well, this is where we start; the best change I wish to see is a rather practical approach in our examinations. In simple words let’s switch from the traditional pen and paper to arts and crafts as marking criteria. Seems funny and impossible to MOVING AWAY FROM MARKS implement right? Well it’s not! My daughter is currently studying through IGCSE in Mumbai and wishes to continue her A-Levels abroad. She has a UK citizenship. I would like to know of High Schools in Leicester for the Sixth Form. —Rupali Some of the reputed schools in Leicester that your daughter can choose from are The Leicester High School for Girls, English Martyrs Catholic School, The Leicestershire Montessori Preparatory School, the Uppingham School and the Ashby School. All of these schools have A-Levels. The Uppingham School has a boarding school too. The rest are day schools. Since you have mentioned that your daughter has a UK citizenship, she could avail of the scholarships and bursaries that the respective schools may have provisions for. The standard requirements for gaining entry into these schools are the evaluation of the GCSE grades, entrance examinations and entrance interview to gauge capability and interest. The requirements would vary from school to school. In addition, on an average the annual day

If your daughter is involved in extra curriculars like music, art, etc; she could avail of these scholarships too in certain schools. My son wants to pursue his undergraduate at Cornell University. I have heard of the Tata Scholarship for Indian students. Could you provide me information on the scholarship and the appli-

cation procedure for the same? The TATA Scholarship has been introduced to provide financial aid for undergraduate Indian students. The scholarship supports 20 scholars in one academic year. The student would receive the scholarship for the entire duration of their undergraduate course at Cornell. However, there are certain conditions specified for Indian students who could avail of the scholarship. The student must be a citizen of India and should have secured admissions to the undergraduate course at Cornell. The application process comprises filling in an application form post securing an admission to Cornell. The application form is available on their website. The scholarship however gives preference to certain courses. Application to the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning; the College of Engineering; the Applied Economics and Management major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; and majors across colleges in the biological sciences, physical sciences and social sciences are given preferences for scholarships.

There are a number of things you can have here and most of the dishes on the menu, will not disappoint you, I can assure you that! I love their biryani, khichda (served on special days) kebabs, etc. Please keep in mind that certain dishes finish pretty early, so plan accordingly! Olympia is a no Albana Khatri nonsense place, good food is what you can look forward to here. Don’t go there expecting anything else, great food is all you’ll get and that should be more than sufficient for anyone!

A concert to remember Ami Shah, H.R. College

T

here I was, a month prior to my SYJC Board exams, sitting in front of my books and trying to study when suddenly I get an impromptu phone call from a friend, and just like that, in the next half an hour, I was standing at the gates to The Turf Club, with chills through my spine at the thought of going to my first concert – The Swedish House Mafia! The enormity of the crowd was unbelievable; thousands

and thousands of people just pouring in through the uncountable gates. After half an hour of struggling with jammed mobile signals, finding my friends, getting my concert band, somehow managing to get inside with all my friends beside me intact, in the middle of those 20,000 odd people seemed like an achievement. As I stepped inside, the music just hit me. This being my first concert, the entire scene in front of my eyes just seemed phenomenal. I was just in time when the Swedish House Mafia came up, and the crowd went berserk! For the next few hours, no thinking,

no caring, no texting, no worrying, it was only the music. Standing in the middle of the crowd, dancing like a maniac, I just closed my eyes and all I could hear, see, smell, talk and breathe was the music and at that very moment, the feeling inside me was like no other, and there is no simple way to express it. The ambience at this Sunburn arena, the videos on the screen, the lights, the stage, just added to the energy and fascinated me to no extent. The Swedish House Mafia weren’t even one of my favourites, nor was I a huge fan of EDM back then, but

that day wasn’t even remotely about that, it was my first concert, my first crazy experience of letting the music take over and surrendering to the rhythm, and leaving everything else behind! That whole concert got me crazy about listening to that kind of music thereafter. None of us realised how those four to five hours of jumping, raving, dancing went by, and as soon as the concert got over you could finally feel the numbness in your feet, all that could come out of my mouth was ‘WOW’. They came, they raved, they conquered, and they certainly did give me one hell of a concert to remember.

He answers various questions in Hindi but cannot write the same nor convert it into English, hence is not at all doing well in his studies and gets very irritated. I need some advice regarding this matter. Some children fail to pick up the language of instruction at school and hence face a lot of problems in reading and writing. This is a language barrier that your son is facing. The best way to overcome this is by highlighting his text material and discussing the academic vocabulary while explaining a specific chapter to him. the unique aspects of the industry. Leading educational programs therefore combine business and sport specific modules of study, while maximising industry engagement over the duration of a course to allow students to contextualise the theories and skills taught. What has emerged is a specific sport management discipline, with specific structures, theories and frameworks relevant to the industry. From an educational perspective, some examples include sport development frameworks, governance systems and specific marketing theories developed for the sport context. In short, the role of the sport manager necessitates both a business background and knowledge and understanding of the sport industry as a unique and distinct one. The sports industry is of course broad, spanning public and private organisations and roles and preparing graduates for a breadth of sport development, operations, event and facility management, high performance and athlete management, marketing and communications roles; each of which require an understanding and educational preparation in the unique business of sport. Primarily in India, it is clear the discipline of sport management is being established and the option for future and current students to consider sport management as a viable career path is in development. The visibility of Sport Management as a career, and the role of education to train and develop managers will be key building blocks in the establishment of the field, and in encouraging and implementing strong governance, professionalisation and commercialisation across India’s sport systems.

A SEMINAR TO VISIT

The K R Cama Oriental Institute is having a seminar on ‘Trading Circuits, Mobile Cultures: Port-Cities and Littoral Societies of the Indian Ocean’ on January 11 and 12 at the Dr. Sir JJ Modi Memorial Hall of the Institute. Historical studies on the economic and social exchanges between the nations of the Indian Ocean, as also their interactions with the hierarchies of indigenous and colonial powers, hold the key to our understanding of peoples, institutions and events in contemporary Asia and Africa. Based on a variety of European and indigenous sources, recent scholarship has successfully revealed how the expanding dynamics of transnational trade, supported by the cultural transactions between the participating countries had transformed the Indian Ocean into a civilisational entity, with strong connections to the global economy since the tenth century. With these dislocations and continuities in mind, they have invited papers which highlight the emergence of the polyglot port-cities; the integrated business practices; the multiethnic merchant communities; the syncretic religious and the artistic traditions as the natural outcome of the continuing circulation of goods, people, ideas and technologies in the Indian Ocean. The emphasis at the Seminar is on the enabling processes through which the business communities, the joint-stock companies, the missionaries, the craftsmen, the transporters, the entertainers, the interpreters, the pirates and the slaves from the countries in and outside the Indian Ocean successfully engaged with each other and forged a grid of interlocking trade routes crisscrossing through India and the other partnering nations. ‘This profession keeps me grounded’ “I have realised that our work has impacted many lives and brought about positive changes,” says Krishna Iyer, Development Manager, Kripa Foundation

I

did my BA in Psychology from Jai Hind College and MA in Social Work (Criminology and Correctional Administration) – from The Tata Institute of Social Sciences. By profession I am a trained social worker and counsellor. Being a Development Manager with Kripa Foundation, my job profile requires me to focus on research activities and in planning and conducting training programmes for the staff. I also manage internship and awareness activities. Having a psychology background and being a trained counsellor I am also involved in addiction counselling with patients and their families. The first exposure I had to working in the field of substance use disorders was during an internship placement at Kripa Foundation during my Masters programme. I discovered during this time that addiction as a disease was so widespread and affected not just the individual but the entire society. Despite being a disease it was still so under-represented and misunderstood. As I saw more and more families disintegrating due to this illness, my purpose of working towards rehabilitating the patients and reintegrating them with society became stronger. Early on I was very keen on taking up a nonconventional career option and work for a cause I felt passionate about. I took up a corporate job, but soon realized that I should follow my heart and do something that I really cared about, which eventually landed me in Kripa. My family played a very important part in supporting me throughout with my career choice, which boosted my confidence. I love practically every aspect of my work. What I specially find very engaging is that I get to interact with numerous patients and their families with such varied dynamics and personalities that it is never monotonous. My work profile also gives me the opportunity to interact with people across the world in the same field of work, which is an extremely enriching experience.

A formal education in psychology and then social work with a specialisation in criminology has definitely given me a strong theoretical foundation. The practical exposure I received through internship placements have also contributed immensely to my << Krishna Iyer understanding of the social sector. Choosing to do my masters in Social Work exposed me to a broad spectrum of subjects. Criminology being highly interdisciplinary helped shape my understanding of human behavior. I also learned a lot on the job, especially about rehabilitation and its importance to society. Financial investment in this career is fairly reasonable compared to management programs. But more than finance, a bigger investment required when choosing this career is of completing a masters/post graduate degree in a relevant field and a strong determination or commitment to the cause of work. If you want to pursue this field, then like most other jobs, a master’s degree gives you an edge. A degree from a good reputed college would get you a starting salary of around Rs.15,000 to Rs.20,000. With relevant work experience, the pay grade would be higher. However, keep in mind the limitations in pay scales when working in the social sector. Though a lot of opportunities are now emerging, better than before, for social work professionals in our country. Relevant college degrees and professional courses make the process of being a ‘professional’ easy in India. Unlike many other countries, India does not have a registration board for social workers, licensing them to practice. Hence, anyone can start working as a professional. As an established professional, there is definitely a good scope of earning well in full-time jobs or even through freelancing. A growing

« PEER SPEAK

demand and need for professional social workers in India, is reflecting in more and better paying jobs now. Also, many multinationals and organisations are now offering high paying CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) jobs. The greatest advantage in working in the field of Substance Abuse/Addiction is that it keeps me grounded and in touch with reality. When we see patients from all walks of life and from across all socio- economic layers come through the door for treatment of addiction, it does make you realise how vulnerable human life is. Over the years, I have realised that our work has impacted many lives and brought about positive changes. Work in this field comes with its own set of challenges. The biggest and foremost challenge is the recovery rate of Addiction itself. The relapse rate of this illness is high and patients usually take months if not years before they can start managing their lives back to normal. Burn out and stress levels in this job could be high, hence individuals working in this area need to have a strong motivation and sense of commitment to sustain. This field of work is largely dominated by experiential and peer counsellors, hence there are not many professionals. Rehabilitation for substance use disorders is quite often misunderstood and sometimes even glamorised through media in society. Working with recovering individuals and families can be emotionally draining and may involve working long hours. So getting a correct perception of the kind of work involved is very important for professionals interested in working with rehabs. I plan to keep working in this profession for a long time. I see an immense opportunity for growth in this field. In an organisation like Kripa Foundation, each individual’s creativity is given the space it needs, and talents are not only appreciated but also nurtured. I would specifically like to widen my experience in the area of research and development, to possibly explore a doctoral program in future. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

How were you initiated into to classical dance? I have been listening to classical Hindustani music since I was born as my mother Ragini Bhagwat is a professional singer. Hence music and dance have come naturally to me. Did you learn music first or dance? I learnt both simultaneously, but dance caught my fancy at a tender age and I was hooked on to Kathak under the expert guidance of Padmashree Smt. Roshan Kumari and Nandita Puri in the Jaipur Gharana style. Watching these acclaimed dancers and learning from them was a lifetime experience and I cherish those moments.

« INTERVIEW When did you decide to become a professional dancer? When I was 13 I got a chance to perform a number due to the recommendation of Nandita Puri in the popular serial ‘The Great Maratha’. This was an exciting experience for me as I was facing the camera for the first time. I then decided to take up dancing seriously. How did you get into acting? I was approached and felt that being a classical dancer would definitely help me a great deal as an actress. My first Marathi movie as the lead actress was Ramoji Rao’s ‘Chalu Navra, Boli Baiko’. I also acted in ‘Dombivli Fast’ and am looking forward to Gajendra Ahire’s films in which my roles are emotionally challenging.

Working Better 19

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2014

In conversation with one of India’s leading corporate trainers, Swapnil Kamat, Founder, CEO and Chief Trainer at Work Better, Naressa Coutinho finds out how the ever-changing, more professional working environment has created a demand for corporate trainers, thereby adding a niche career option to contemporary employment What is Corporate Training? Corporate Training is a process that companies undertake to develop the knowledge and skills of their employees that are critical for the success of their jobs, thereby leading to improved businesses. These trainings can either be technical or behavioral, dealing with products, business communication, leadership qualities etc. The process of Training Need Identification for a certain employee would entail competency mapping, history of improvement during appraisals and vendor (like Work Better) intervention towards improved efficiency of employees. What made you make a career shift into Corporate Training? Work Better Training was born out of my experience of attending Corporate Training Workshops. They were of two kinds – one was the boring kind where the Trainers went on and on about some irrelevant theoretical concepts, which frankly did not apply to work life reality. The other was where we just played a bunch of games and then the trainer forced fit a message after every game, which was supposed to relate to our work place. I realised that neither one of these approaches worked. Executive learning needs to happen differently. If training is fundamental to a professional’s development and progress, it has to be made more interesting and real. This idea helped me create Work Better, and as an organisation, this has been our endeavour from the last five years. In fact, feedback suggests that we have been successful at it.

option is mainly for those who already have sufficient experience in their respective fields? Can you start out as a trainer in your first job, just out of college? Learning and development is a field in which people are trained to become more effective professionally. A trainer ideally needs to have a strong base on the subjects and the corporate life. This profundity is usually developed through experience gained by working and training. A trainer with relevant and wholesome experience can train with conviction and will be received well by the participants. Simply put the trainer will preach substance and will be able to relate with the participants’ needs and challenges. A pitfall for a person who has become a trainer straight out of college is that there is a higher How will Work Better change probability that he will speak the corporate scene of the from the textbook and not indusday? trainer? A trainer enjoys the luxury of meeting participants of different profiles, hierarchies, industries and brands. The best part about being a trainer therefore is the amount of exposure and learning he gets. As the famous quote says, “In giving is receiving.” Every training programme is a discussion of ideas, concepts and participants’ experiences. In the process of facilitation, a trainer gets first-hand key insights and knowledge from the participants. The risks involved are God Complex – the feeling of pride that one knows it all. At any stage if a trainer starts feeling that he knows everything/knows way more than the participants; his learning gets stagnant. This arrogance may reflect in his behaviour in the training leading to a disconnect between him and the participants. This may lead to a downward dip for the trainer.

I FIRMLY RESOLVE

The New Year is here! We ask youngsters around the city to share their resolutions for the New Year. We also ask them to share their wishes and hopes for Mumbai city in 2014 My resolutions for the new year are to visit two new countries that I have never been to before. My second resolutions is to work really hard and get a promotion at work. My prayers for the city would have to be safety for women and children and everyone. I also hope that in the new year we will have better roads and less poverty. I want to tell everyone that they must work out everyday so that we can have a healthy and fit Mumbai so that all the horrible diseases doing the rounds will stay away.

—Albana Khatri Training Manager

My resolution for the new year is to reduce at least 5 kgs. On the other hand my wish for the city would be that I hope the government expedites execution of infra development plans - so there is less traffic, better facilities, better education , and growth.

O

n the joyous occasion of Christmas, EuroSchool, Thane organised a ‘Joy of Giving’ activity for the children of their service staff. The event was held in the school premises where participation was mandatory as it aimed at developing a child’s academic skill. This initiative was highly appreciated by parents, as the school was taking an extra effort to inculcate the habit of sharing and giving in children. The celebration started with carol singing and a daylong carnival on December 24. Students of Grades 5-7 with their teacher’s support put up small snack and game stalls and the profit generated from the carnival was utilised to buy gifts for the children of the school’s service staff. The carnival was also a part of the

school’s curriculum, where kids learnt the concepts of cost price, selling price, overheads, profit, selling, accounting and charity practically. Speaking on the occasion, Rajani Pattabhiraman, Principal, EuroSchool, Thane said, “Through this unique initiative, the children of EuroSchool’s service staff also got a chance to celebrate Christmas in its true spirit. It was also a small gesture by the school to express our care for the staff. Apart from this, students also learnt academic and social skills. We at EuroSchool strongly believe that we are a small family and the school is our home. Hence this is the best place where our children can learn social charity as rightly stated that charity begins at home."

With 2014 here, we all make promises to improve ourselves and to full fill some goal or the other. With no exception, my resolutions would probably be to become more efficient at my job, learn and grow more. For Mumbai city, I really would like the city to improve in its infrastructure. A lot of issues right from the condition of roads, improvement of public transport, to tackling issues of poverty and illiteracy need to be dealt with and I hope the government starts to take some proactive measures to improve them. I think for females there is a high amount of fear. I would like the city to be a far safer city where women do not have to live in fear that they will be taken advantage of. We all hope to have a better year than the previous one. So I hope that 2014 brings with it changes that actually do happen and are not merely planned.

ast Sunday I had gone to the Mahalakshmi temple with my family. On my way out I made my way to the place where the footwear was kept and began looking for my slippers. To my disgust, a man was standing on them and putting on his shoes as he didn’t want to put his feet on the ground and get his socks dirty. I was outraged at his action and looking at him, could tell that he belonged to the elite class of society, but by his behavior was uncultured. I feel that we as Indians are exceptionally uncultured. Allow me to justify. When we eat something, we throw the wrappers on the roads and then complain about how dirty Mumbai is, without realizing that we are the ones who are littering it. When I was in school, there was a girl in my school bus who used to stop people from littering, and if they didn’t comply, she would take the wrapper from them and keep it in her bag. She used to say, “Just because something is public property, it doesn’t mean that you

can make a mess of it”. The other day when I was travelling in a packed train, a pregnant woman was standing next to me. There were so many people sitting, but no one got up and offered her a seat. The truth is, we are quite self-centered and don’t care for people around us. It’s like we follow the policy of ‘every man for himself’. I might be scoffed at because people say that Indians are always united in the face of adversity, but in the case of the Delhi gang rape, no one stopped by to help the victim. The problem is with our mentality. We are constantly trying to ape foreign cultures, but I doubt that they litter their roads and spit on walls. We blame politicians for what India is today, but are politicians going to come and teach us how to board trains without pushing and shoving each other? Or are they going to come and teach us not to litter? I think we as citizens are responsible to some extent for the way India is, and I feel that we should be the change we want to see in our country, as we are the future of India and are the ones who can make it look bright.

harati Pitre has created a wonderful world with her sculptures in Paper Mache. What brings out expressions on the face are not the eyes – the eyes are only finally indicated – but the month. The torso is huge – everything about the figure is huge. There are no thin man and women in Bharati's sculptures. Bharati Pitre has excellent imaginative and visualising powers. The process involves mixing paper pulp with natural bindus to form the medium which is then dried in sunlight. uilee Mahajan has perhaps made abstracted works her first choice. A striking feature of her painting is the bright colours she uses. There are well-thought out colour arrangements. Invariably, pacthes of which are there amidst bright colours which smoothly merge with one another. Colours perhaps is her forte.Visualisation of an arrangement takes place and we see a composition with nowhere forms. The colour scheme is cerebral.

And evidently, even as the artist goes about her creative works, aesthetics creeps in with stealthy feet. Behind whatever Juilee does, there is always beauty in abundance. And when the artist does figure work, wht comes out are endearing images. She is capable of bringing in emotions with her brush. And again, she paints the man and woman's costumes in bright colours. Axis bank is likely to witness some pressure on its NIM as the benefits of recapitalization tapers. We model NIM to come around 3.6%/3.5% during FY14E/15E as compared to 3.82% in H1FY14. Although headline NPLs suggest comfort, high exposure to non-operational power portfolio remains a potential risk, in our view. Management raised the guidance on incremental stress buildup by ~20% post higher than expected restructuring during Q2FY14. Its retail book has seen impressive performance in recent times - share has gone up by ~450bps to 30.2% during last one year. It has outperformed Sensex by ~16% during last one & half months and is ahead of fundamentals, in our view. Hence, we downgrade the stock to ACCUMULATE from BUY earlier with an unchanged TP of Rs.1370 based on P/ABV of 1.55x its FY15E ABV. NIM is likely to witness some pressure as the benefits of recapitalization tapers: NIM came at 3.82% (H1FY14) much above the management’s guidance largely aided by funding advantage from Q4FY13 equity offering. Although, cost of deposits remained stable at ~6.25% during H1FY14, yield on assets was cushioned by improvement in the share of retail book, despite pressure on yield on investment book. Going forward, we expect NIM to trend downward, as the benefits of raised capital tapers. We are modeling NIM to come around 3.6%/3.5% during FY14E/15E as compared to 3.53% in FY13 (3.82% in H1FY14) as we expect pressure on yields due to increased competition in dearth of lending opportunities. Valuations & recommendation: We have marginally tweaked the earnings estimate for Axis bank and expect it to report earnings growth of 16.8% CAGR during FY13-15E along with healthy return ratios (RoE: 17-18%, RoA: 1.7%). We are modeling moderate growth in non-interest income at 13.6% CAGR during FY13-15E as against 36.6% CAGR witnessed during FY08-13 as slow business growth along with moderate traction in off-balance sheet items are likely to impact this stream of revenue.

Ventura Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Emami CMP: Rs. 475

Target Rs. 539

Leadership presence in niche under - penetrated product categories, expansion of its distribution reach and strong focus on rural markets should help Emami Ltd (Emami) drive its top line going ahead. Moreover, despite the revenue concentration among the top four brands, no single brand accounts for more than 20 - 22% of revenues and hence provides stability to revenues. This coupled with the regular flow of 2 - 3 new product launches / extensions every year should help keep the company’s brand and product portfolio reinvigorated. Emami has a very aggressive marketing strategy in place. Its two - fold A&P strategy of using celebrity endorsements (one at the national level and another at regional level) should help improve their brand communication. This coupled with expansion of distribution network and rural focus should ensure growth momentum of company’s brands, going ahead. We expect the company’s power brands to drive the top line growth on the back of its eminent presence in niche under-penetrated product categories, expansion of its distribution reach and strong focus on rural markets. Despite the revenue concentration among the top four brands, no single brand accounts for more than 20-22 percent of revenues and hence provides stability to revenues. Moreover, regular flow of 2-3 new product launches / extensions every year should help keep the company’s brand and product portfolio reinvigorated besides building on the brand equity further. Presence in low penetrated categories, aggressive promotion through celebrity endorsements and expansion in rural reach provides long term growth visibility: Given the fact that ~60% of company s revenues come from categories which are relatively under penetrated, we believe that this attribute presents significant growth opportunity for Emami in the long term. Secondly, Emami follows two - fold A&P strategy i.e. one at the national level and another at regional level which is highly skewed towards celebrity endorsements. This aggressive strategy makes Emami one of the most aggressive spenders in the industry (~16.4% of sales in FY13) which we believe should help the company maintain growth momentum, going ahead. Valuation: We initiate coverage on Emami Ltd (Emami) as a BUY with a Price Objective of Rs 539 representing an upside potential of ~14 percent over the next 15 months. At the CMP of Rs 475, the stock is trading at 29.1x and 24.7x its FY14E and FY15E earnings respectively. During past three years, Emami has broadly traded in 25-29x one-year forward PE band. We believe that the stock has the potential to trade in the upper range of this band on account of strong positioning in under-penetrated categories, thrust on rural market penetration, aggressive ad spends and rapid expansion in distribution network. Moreover, strong growth in International business should give push overall profitability and revenue growth. Accordingly, we have assigned a target multiple of 28x to its FY15E earnings translating into a target price of Rs 539.

n estimated Rs. 7700 crore worth of commercial and residential properties of nonperforming assets (NPAs) with banks and financial institutions are up for sale. According to data compiled by NPAsource.com, a portal which focuses on resolution of stressed assets. There are around 2200 units in the commercial category and nearly 11,000 units in the residential segment. NPAsource.com has total NPA properties worth around Rs 27,500 crore registered on its portal spread across 27,626 units. Commercial NPA properties have a 15% share in value term while residential properties have a 13% share. The biggest chunk of NPA properties fall under the industrial land & building category with a 65% plus share in value terms. DK Jain, Chairman & MD of Atishya Technologies Ltd, owner of the portal said, “Maharashtra, largely due to Mumbai, tops both the commercial and residential cat-

egories with Rs 842 crore and Rs 838 crore respectively. Delhi comes next with Rs 686 crore worth of NPA commercial and Rs 500 crore worth of NPA residential properties. Andhra Pradesh comes at number three in the residential properties ranking with Rs 497 crore worth of space up for sale under NPA properties to be auctioned by banks and financial institutions. Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are the next three states with highest value of commercial and residential NPA properties. The single largest commercial property in value terms is an office property at New Delhi valued at Rs 200 crore at the base price. In the residential category, the single largest NPA property happens to a farm house at New Delhi with a base value of Rs 40 crore. Mumbai has two NPA commercial properties with a base price value of Rs 26.5 crore and Rs 24.6 crore. “As NPAs in the corporate sector continue to grow in the coming months, there will be more com-

mercial and residential properties which will be put under the auction block by banks and financial institutions to recover their dues. A slowdown in the real estate markets across the country has further added to the woes of the lenders who will not be able to generate higher returns from the sale of mortgaged properties in the residential and commercial spaces. A positive turnaround in the realty market as well as the Indian economy may take place around May if a stable government is formed at the Centre, said DK Jain. As on March 31, 2013, net NPAs of 40 listed banks were Rs 93,109 crore, which rose to Rs 1,28,533 crore as on September 30, 2013.

When he learns that his ex, mother of his son Max, dies, he goes to figure out what to do with him. His ex’s sister wants to take him in but Charlie has first say in the matter. Charlie asks her husband for money so he can buy a new Robot in exchange for turning Max over to them. He takes Max for the summer. And Max improves his control of his robot. But when the robot is destroyed, they go to a scrap yard to get parts. Max finds an old generation robot named Atom and restores him. Zee Studio, 8 p.m.

UMBAI: All-rounder Yuvraj Singh was axed from India's ODI squad owing to his poor performance in South Africa even as rookies such as Ishwar Pandey and Stuart Binny got their maiden callups for India's tour of New Zealand starting with a one-day series from January 19. Yuvraj, who got out to a second-ball duck the only time he came out to bat in the lost threematch ODI series against South Africa, was replaced by Stuart Binny, son of former India all-rounder Roger Binny. Binny, 29, has played 53 first-class matches for Karnataka and scored 2714 runs at an average of 34.79, besides taking 79 wickets. Another surprise inclusion in the team was Madhya Pradesh seamer Ishwar Pandey, who has been drafted into both the ODI and Test squad. Fit-again pacer Varun Aaron, 24, has made a comeback to the ODI squad replacing Mohit Sharma, who failed to impress in South Africa. If he makes it to the final XI of the fivematch ODI series against New Zealand, it would be Aaron's first 50over appearance for India after 2011. The Test team was not altered too much with Ishwar coming in place of Pragyan Ojha being the only change made to the 17-member squad for the two-match series against the Kiwis starting February 10 in Auckland after a two-day practice match. Interestingly, Ojha did not get a single game in the two-match series against South Africa which India lost 0-1 yesterday. The 24-year-old Ishwar, who replaces Ojha, has played 31 first-class matches, grabbing 131

Senior pacer Zaheer Khan would once again spearhead the Indian pace attack in Tests with Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Pandey to support him on the seaming tracks of New Zealand. The ODI squad also sports a paceheavy look but the spearhead's role would be taken over by Ishant as Zaheer will not play in the five-match series. The batting line-up remains more or less the same except for Binny coming in to take Yuvraj's place. The specialist all-rounder's role continues to belong to Ravindra Jadeja, who shone with the ball but disappointed with the bat in South Africa. The tour of New Zealand will start with the first ODI in Napier, followed by matches in Hamilton (Jan 22 and Jan 28), Auckland (Jan 25) and Wellington (Jan 31). The Indians will play a two-day warm-up match in Whangharei from February 2 followed by the two-match Test series in Auckland (Feb 6 to 10) and Wellington (Feb 14 to 18).

wickets at an average of 24.43. The rest of the Test line-up has been left untouched with R Ashwin, who did not impress much with his bowling, holding on to his place despite the conditions in New Zealand being not too conducive for slow bowlers.

While MuraliVijay, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli picked themselves after fine performances in the trying tour of South Africa, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have managed to retain the selectors' faith despite coming a cropper.

Test squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishwar Pandey. Retired life isn’t so bad, Tendulkar to Kallis

NEW DELHI: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to just-retired South African allrounder Jacques Kallis, calling him a "true champion" who always played the game in the right spirit. "@jacqueskallis75 Congratulations on a fabulous career. You have played the game in the right spirit....It's been a joy to have played against you. Jacques you are a true Champion. Retired life isn't so bad :-))," Tendulkar, who called time on his own career in international cricket last month, tweeted. Kallis, one of the greatest allrounders of the game, bid adieu to Test cricket after an illustrious 18year career in a fairytale script as he hit a century in his swansong match in South Africa's 10-wicket thrashing of India in Durban. The script for Kallis' Test retirement could not have been better as he ended his career as the third highest run- getter in the longest format of the game, besides also bowing out with a win by his side. The 38-year-old 'King' Kallis ended his Test career on 13,289 runs from 166 Tests, only behind Tendulkar (15,921) and Ricky Ponting (13,378) in the alltime list. His batting average stood at an outstanding 55.37. He also took 292 wickets and 200 catches. His 45 tons in Test cricket is only second to Tendulkar's 51. Kallis will continue to play in the OneDayers and he has so far scored 11,574 runs from 325 ODI matches and has taken 273 wickets at an average of 31.79. The burly South African made his Test debut against England here in December 1995.

Transition phase completed as Tendulkar bids farewell in 2013 By Kushan Sarkar

N

EW DELHI: A legend walking into sunset after an illustrious career, a bunch of bravehearts asserting India's supremacy in the limited overs format and a phenomenally talented cricketer choosing the path of self destruction by indulging in spot-fixing, were the highlights of Indian cricket in the eventful 2013. While cricket had its usual quota of the good, the bad and the ugly but Sachin Tendulkar's retirement after serving the country for 24 long years and giving joy to billions across the globe was certainly the most moving moment of the year. It indeed was a 'Farewell to Remember' when Tendulkar played his 200th and final Test match at his homeground Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. His last innings in Test cricket bore testimony to legendary status -- an innings that was high on quality and aesthetic value for those who had loved the 'Game of glorious uncertainties'. The euphoria and outpouring of the fans during his farewell series would forever remain unmatched. Sir Don Bradman may have had the best average but when it came to love and affection, Tendulkar had outscored the iconic Australian by a fair distance.

200 Test matches, 100 international centuries, more than 50,000 runs across all formats at the senior level are not just numbers or milestones for the cricket crazy Indians. These are figures that every fan

tional afternoon. Tendulkar left a legacy but with his departure a new chapter unfolded in Indian cricket as the 'transition phase', which had been a buzz word since the retirement of Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly was completed. The 'Gen-Next' under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's able stewardship took over quite successfully with Virat Kohli easily being the best of the lot in terms of talent transformed into performance. Apart from the legends, the likes of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh are also on their way out as they are battling to save their international careers. Earlier this year, Shikhar Dhawan burst into Test cricket with an amazing 187 against Australia at Mohali which turned out to be the fastest hundred by a debutant. Dhawan since then has made rapid strides in international cricket having played a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy triumph in England where he was adjudged 'Player of the Series'. Along with Rohit Sharma, Dhawan has forged a very successful opening partnership treasures with a sense of belonging. which has done exceptionally well His farewell speech at the in the West Indies, England, India Wankhede on November 16 will for- with only failure being the year-end ever be etched in the memory of his away series against South Africa. fans as there was hardly anyone Dhoni again has proved that he is who didn't wipe a tear on that emo- a good strategist as his decision to

open with Rohit Sharma has proved to be a masterstroke. The talented Mumbai batsman had revelled in his new role which saw him smash a double hundred against the West Indies at Bangalore last month. Rohit also had an impressive debut as he scord back-to-back tons in his first two matches although he has struggled against pace and swing in South African conditions. Cheteshwar Pujara seemed to have made the No 3 slot vacated by Rahul Draviod his own as he showed the world that he is good enough to make runs in foreign conditions with scores of 153 and 70 against South Africa at Johannesburg and Durban. But highlight of India's batting has been Kohli's consistency throughout the season which has literally transfomed him into one of world's premier batsmen in current times. 18 hundred in just 125 ODIs speaks volumes of what a prolific scorer this 25year-old has been for India in recent times. His first innings century at Johannesburg was pure class and 96 in the second innings showed his insatiable hunger for runs. With centuries on Australian and South African soil, Dhoni's heir apparent is ready to take the legacy of Tendulkar forward just like he has now easioy fitted into the legend's much owned No 4 batting slot.

The run of Pesi Shroff trained Master Shifu showed he has a big chance in the Derby if he runs in that race. In its first run, Master Shifu had an easy, educative run. HANDIGARH: The last of the hockey icons, Balbir Singh Sr turned 90 today, looking back with satisfaction at his long and rewarding tryst with hockey, which he calls his "first love", but sad at the state of the game in India. Gentle and soft-spoken as ever, ramrod straight Balbir belies his years. Triple gold Olympian and a victorious Olympic captain, he was also the chief coach and manager of the team that won the one and only World Cup hockey title for India in 1975. Chosen as one of the 16 "iconic Olympians" across all disciplines since 1896, the start of the modern Olympic era, Balbir was honoured by the International Olympic Committee during the 2012 London Olympics alongwith other great sportsmen such as legendary sprinter the late Jesse Owens. Balbir remains the holder of Olympic and world record for the most goals scored by an individual in an Olympic men's hockey final for scoring 5 out of the 6 goals against Holland in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He captained the Indian team that won the title in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Despite an outstanding career, Balbir remains a modest man and has to be coaxed into talking about his achievements. "I was very lucky", he says. He calls hockey "my Goddess, my first love and my darling". He is still waiting for his "hockey fairy" who would help India regain its glory in the game. Asked about the state of Indian hockey, Balbir replies, "very bad. I did not want to say this word. I feel

Four Indian skiers to go as independent athletes at the Sochi Olympics MANALI: Four Indian skiers, who have qualified for the Winter Games, will represent the country as independent athletes at the Black Sea resort of Sochi in Russia, Feb 7-23. Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) secretary general Roshan Thakur on Tuesday said the skiers -- Himanshu Thakur, Hira Lal and Shiva Keshavan, all from this Himachal Pradesh town, and Nadeem Iqbal from Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir -- have qualified for the Olympics. "They will not represent the country under the Indian flag, but they are participating as independent athletes under the Olympic flag," Thakur said. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended India in December 2012 over the election process of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). "They all have qualified for the Olympics by scoring the required Federation de International of Skiing (FIS) points in international races in the past three-four years. Now when they are heading to participate, they can't represent the country. It's sad," said Thakur.

NEW DELHI: Two-time Olympic medal winner wrestler Sushil Kumar has received the eight acres of land that was promised to him by the Haryana government for setting up his academy at the Motilal Nehru School of Sports in Sonepat. "It's an honour that Chief Minister Bhupender Singh Hooda gave me eight acres land to start the world class wrestling academy and I would like to thank him for this kind gesture,' Sushil said in a statement. Sushil won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before improving to a silver in the London edition last year.

Hockey icon Balbir Singh Sr, during an interview in Chandigarh on Tuesday. dejected. I am sad". He recalled that when he was being honoured during the London Olympics, the Indian team had not won a single match which had shocked him. "Balbir comes and Balbir goes but India is there forever. It is India which is more important". What is wrong with Indian hockey, he was asked, to which he replied, "coaches, training, physical fitness, the way the game is run". Balbir reckons that depending on foreign coaches alone to lift the standard of hockey in the country may not be enough as they are "over qualified" for the job. "There are very good foreign coaches, they are highly qualified but they are over-qualified for our conditions. We must get our intelligent coaches, educated ones, trained abroad. They should get

the training so that when they come back, they can continue till they retire. Now, foreign coaches, come and take salaries, sorry to say that, and they go back. If we can get our own coaches trained, get all the training facilities abroad, they can come back, serve the country. Then they will feel honoured to serve the country. We have talent, our boys are good, but we lack in training and physical fitness. We should be among the top 4-5 teams. We should be there", he said. The hockey legend enlisted a number of other reasons for the declining standard of Indian hockey which, he said, has been given a "step-motherly treatment". The long-standing feud between the two federations -Hockey India (HI) and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) -- was

also hurting the game. "Unfortunately, there are two federations. Because of the division, our hockey has suffered a lot", he points out. "Training is also one of the reasons, because our coaches are qualified, but nowadays, foreign coaches come, they train their (style) hockey. We should get our coaches trained, so as to produce many more coaches. Then, we have given hockey step motherly treatment. Other sports, No.1 is cricket, it is in limelight, the players are highly paid, always on TV, cameras are there. They are treated as actors. But hockey poor chaps, sorry", he said. Balbir has devised an innovative three-tier revival plan for Indian hockey which he believes can improve the standard of the game.

Schumacher fighting for life after France ski accident

G

RENBOLE, FRANCE: Michael Schumacher, the greatest champion in the history of Formula One, was in a coma fighting for his life after sustaining serious head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps. Doctors have warned it is touch-and-go for the German racing legend as they wait for the full extent of his injuries to become clear after he fell and slammed his head on a rock while skiing off-piste on Sunday. News of the accident stunned the Formula One community and racing stars joined German Chancellor Angela Merkel and legions of fans in expressing their

hopes for his recovery. Doctors at the hospital in the southeastern city of Grenoble where Schumacher is being treated said on Monday their famous patient was fighting for his life after suffering major brain trauma. "He is in critical condition, his condition can be described as life threatening," Jean-Francois Payen, head of the intensive care unit, told reporters. Payen said he had been placed in an artificial coma to limit the impact of his head injuries on his brain. Doctors said it was too early to say whether Schumacher, who is due to turn 45 on January 3, would pull through. "It usually

takes 48 hours, or even longer, to be able to formulate an opinion" on injuries of this severity, said neurologist Jean-Luc Truelle. The coma reduces the patient's temperature to around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) to reduce swelling. By being unconscious, the brain is also switched off to sounds, light and other triggers that cause the organ to use up oxygen as it processes the stimuli. Schumacher's condition was initially described as non-lifethreatening after he was helicoptered off a mountain in the upmarket Meribel resort after the accident. However it quickly deteriorated and he fell into a coma. Stephan Chabardes, who operated on Schumacher, said the former racer arrived in hospital Sunday in an agitated state -- his arms and legs jerking uncontrollably -- and was not able to answer questions. Payen said Schumacher had been operated on immediately and had suffered "serious and diffuse brain lesions". Doctors do not expect to perform a second operation. He added that Schumacher would not be alive if he had not been wearing a helmet. "Given the violence of the impact, his helmet partially protected him. If someone had had this type of accident without a helmet, they would definitely not be here," Payen said.

MSLTA to host Mumbai Blasters under 16 State Tennis C’ships

MUMBAI: MSLTA will host the Mumbai Blasters Under 16 State Tennis Championships from January 6-9. YDNEY: Australia recalled Ashes destroyer David Warner and Test captain Michael Clarke, adding power and class to the one-day squad unveiled today to face England in the first three of five matches. "David Warner has won back his place in the Australia ODI squad with his outstanding recent form," said national selector John Inverarity. "Michael Clarke, Shaun Marsh and James Pattinson have been included after being unavailable through injury for the series against India in October." Australia have comprehensively outplayed England to take a 4-0 Ashes lead and are a strong bet for a total whitewash when the final Test opens on Sydney on Friday.

Warner has been in blistering form with the bat while Clarke, who missed the October tour of India with chronic back trouble, has led a total turnaround for an Australia team that lost the last Ashes series 3-0 in England earlier this year. "There are three outstanding players in Clarke, Warner and Marsh coming back and we believe their inclusion provides the squad with several batting options," Inverarity said. "Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh are exciting prospects at the top of the order with the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup only 14 months away." Fast-bowler James Pattinson also returns from a longterm back injury, reports PTI. "Pattinson has worked

hard to get back to full fitness and will be looking to regain his best form," the selector said with an eye on Australia's Test tour to South Africa in February and March. Australia v England schedule: Jan 12: Melbourne Jan 17: Brisbane Jan 19: Sydney Jan 24: Perth Jan 26: Adelaide Squad for the first three matches: Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (vice-capt), Nathan CoulterNile, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, David Warner, Shane Watson.
