The court was hearing the case filed by Modern India, an NSEL investor, where attention of the High Court was drawn to the fact that earlier, in one such case, another justice of the same court had directed the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), the

In the case of Modern India, one of the largest NSEL borrowers, the FMC had raised objection to the settlement. While hearing the matter, Justice S.J. Punit Bhavsar Working professional Yes, if the doctors take care that only deserving people get the insurance claim, this makes sense. Santosh Anantharaman Merchant Navy Yes, as for many people, bariatric surgery is a must to lead quality life. For them getting the insurance cover will be useful. he Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) has once again broached the ticklish issue of fare hike for the Versova-AndheriGhatkopar (VAG) metro line. Officials at the MMOPL yesterday disclosed that the MMOPL was ready to commence commercial operations within a week of receiving the official certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). However, the MMOPL officials remained tight-lipped about what the fares would be. Pointing to the rising costs in factors like Consumer Price Index, delays in executing the project, government salaries, price of steel, interest rates, electricity rates and recent tariff hikes in BEST bus fares, taxi and auto fares, the MMOPL argued that the government had stated that the Metro fares would not be less than 1.5 times that of the BEST bus fares. While the BEST gets a subsidy of Rs.450 crores, the Metro cannot avail of such subsidy. Sources pointed out that as per section 33 of the Metro Railways Act, 2002, MMOPL now becomes the Metro Rail Administrator. As per the provisions of the act, the MRA can fix the fares after obtaining the go ahead from the Fare Fixation Committee. The hike will not apply to the initial fares governed by the Metro Railways Act. As per the initial fare rate structure the minimum fare for VAG was Rs.9 and maximum fare was Rs.13. After four years, the fare rate will see an 11 per cent hike and at the

hree years after BJP leader Nitin Gadkari filed a case in December 2010 against Manish Tewari, as the Congress spokesperson had accused him of holding a benami flat in the scam-tainted Adarsh Society, Tewari tendered an unconditional apology to Nitin Gadkari following which BJP leader withdrew a defamation case against him. According to Gadkari's lawyer Rameshwar Gite, “Tewari has tendered an apology after which Gadkari has now withdrawn the defamation case. In a letter to Gadkari, Tewari has said, 'I understand that such by such statements you have to suffer huge disrepute and

Therefore by this communication I tender my unconditional apology for the allegations made against you.'” Tewari also said that in future he will not put Gadkari in disrepute by making any comments with regard to the Adarsh Society and requested Gadkari to withdraw the case filed in the magistrate's court. He had contended in the complaint that this was false and defamatory and Tewari be tried for criminal defamation under the Indian Penal Code. The court had last month taken cognizance of Gadkari's complaint and had issued process against Tewari.

of April 30, 1960. Then, at the stroke of midnight, just like the brand new country that came into existence a little less than 13 years previously, Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru pressed the button to unveil the neon map of Maharashtra, thus marking the birth of a new State. These and other memories come alive every year on May 1, and this year is no different as the city plunges into its 54th anniversary. Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra, is where Maharashtra was formally inaugurated on the night connecting April 30 and May 1,1960, on Vaisakha 11, Saka 1882. The historic ceremony of inauguration of Maharashtra was held in presence of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India, Sri Prakasa, then Governor of Maharashtra, and Yashwantrao Chavan, Chief Minister.

The Moment Apart from the Prime Minister, the Governor and the Chief Minister, the official ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries including the leaders who played significant role in the struggle for the creation of Samyukta Maharashtra, Judges of the Bombay High Court, Consuls of various countries, eminent doctors, citizens, representatives of Industrial Workers’ unions, artists, ex-servicemen, etc. Sadashiv Gorakshkar, historian and author of ‘The History of Raj Bhavans in Maharashtra’, formerly one of the directors of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum, has recorded that the ceremony was attended among others by Governor of Kerala, B. Ramakrishna Rao, Punjab Governor N V alias Kakasaheb Gadgil, Madhya Pradesh Governor Haribhau Pataskar, Defence Minister V K Krishna Menon and Indira

As soon as Pt Nehru pressed the button to unveil the neon map of Maharashtra and to mark the birth of the new State, there was thunderous applause from the invitees. Newspapers of the following day reported that bells in temples and churches rang at midnight. Mills, factories, railway engines and steamers blew horns and sirens to celebrate the moment. According to the Indian News Review no 604, which would be shown in cinema theaters before the main feature film, for five days, buildings and offices were illuminated all over Mumbai (then Bombay) to symbolize the festive spirit. Sell assets of borrowers: HC tells EOW and ED Continued from pg 1 « Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate was present on Wednesday, the court asked the Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) to remain present. Justice Kathawalla asked the FMC chairman, Abhishek to explain to the court their status and issues they have in this case. He also asked the Director ED to come next Wednesday to explain why NSEL borrowers' properties attached by them under prevention of money laundering act cannot be sold.

The court said that the selling of the properties will take place with their permission. EOW has given the list of attached assets to the ED. However, the ED said that they can't liquidate the assets due to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) Act which puts attached assets under union government. Reacting to this, the court asked EOW and ED to allow selling of attached assets of the borrowers by consent, but observed that permission cannot be given to distribute the money and the money has to be brought to court. High Court set up a

committee which has powers to pass a decree against the borrowers who have defaulted in the NSEL case. The committee will be headed by former Justice of Bombay High court V.C. Daga and will also consist of a Chartered Accountant and a lawyer whose names will be finalised shortly. The ED has so far attached eight provisional orders of three NSEL borrowers which are Mohan India, PD Agro Processors and Aastha Group. The EOW has attached 460 properties of borrowers in the Rs.5,574 crore NSEL scam. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

May Day today

oday, May 1, is celebrated as "Maharashtra Day" and "Gujarat Day" to mark the day when, back in 1960, the two western states attained statehood after the erstwhile Bombay State was divided on linguistic lines. Internationally too, the day holds great significance. Promoted by the International Labour Movement every year, the day is termed International Workers' Day (also known as May Day). It is a celebration of the world's labour and the working classes. May 1 also happens to be the traditional European spring holiday of May Day. Therefore, though May 1 is a national public holiday in more than 80 countries, only in some of those countries is the public holiday officially known as Labour Day or some similar variant. In the other countries, the public holiday marks the spring festival of May Day.

Only 20 dangerous buildings in MBMC list The list has been prepared after an extensive structural audit exercise By Suresh Golani

A

s an annual pre-monsoon ritual, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has tagged 20 buildings in the twin-city as dangerous and unfit for human habitation. Thanks to an elaborate structural audit exercise launched by the Public Work’s Department (PWD) in the MBMC, this year’s figure has been significantly reduced as compared to last year’s 74 listed dilapidated structures, out of which 36 were vacated and demolished, while 18 structures had been suggested corrective repair

measures after an official structural audit, owners of five other structures have moved the judiciary, thus creating legal obstacles for the civic administration in taking any type of coercive steps. In the aftermath of the Mumbra building collapse, the MBMC under the relevant sections of the BPMC Act had mandated residents of as many as 1,267 structures to conduct structural audits and submit the stability reports to the concerned ward offices. Of the 1,267 structures 111 are more than 30 years old. While most of the buildings have carried

out or are in the process of getting their structures repaired as per the audit reports, several housing societies have expressed a question mark on the authenticity of audits carried out by the structural auditors empaneled by the MBMC. “The ward officials have been directed to keep a tab on the current status of structures which have been suggested corrective measures and issue notices to violators so as to ensure that the work is completed before the onset of monsoons,” confirmed Executive Engineer, Deepak Khambit.

fficials of the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch Unit II have recovered 52 tolas and six gram of gold jewellery worth Rs.16 lakh along with seven mobile phones from two accused arrested earlier this week for conducting housebreaking thefts in the Panvel region in the last one year. The two have been identified as Irfan Yusuf Shaikh (21), a resident of Kalamboli and native of Buldhana, and Samir Umar Khan alias Anna (18), a resident of Panvel. The duo revealed in their interrogation that they had committed ten house-breaking thefts with the help of three other companions in the Panvel, Nhava-Sheva,

Legislature elections or failing monsoons: Which serious enough for special session? By Prashant Hamine

L

eader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawde yesterday slammed the state government for convening a day's special session of the State Legislative Council on May 8 to elect the new Legislative Council Chairman and Leader of Opposition. In a statement issued here, he said that government should have instead convened a special session to debate the likely situation arising out of the World Meterological Regional Centre predicting a below average rainfall during the ensuing monsoon season. Earlier in the day, the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the house met and approved the proposal to hold a one day special ses-

sion on May 8. Official sources disclosed that this is because the term of membership of the chairman and Leader of Opposition has ended on April 24. The elections to the 9 Legislative Council seats were held unopposed. The nine candidates who won are – Shivajirao Deshmukh, Chandrakant Raghuvanshi, Haribhau Rathod (all Congress), Hemant Takle, Kiran Pawaskar, Anand Thakur (all NCP), Vinod Tawde, Pandurang Phundkar (both BJP) and Dr. Neelam Gorhe (Shiv Sena). Of these – Shivajirao Deshmukh was the Legislative Council Chairman, while Tawde was the Leader of Opposition. In a statement issued here yesterday, Tawde stated that the farmers in the state are

already reeling under the impact of the recent hailstorm and unseasonal rains in some parts of the state. The water table in all the irrigation dams is currently just 33 per cent and the monsoons are another month and a half away. Tawde stated that instead of calling a special session of the legislative council just to conduct elections for the two posts, the government could have held a special session of the state legislature in the first week of May to discuss the impact of the weather forecast, acute water scarcity and relief measures. Meanwhile, the state cabinet yesterday approved the proposal to enhance the Calamity Relief Fund ceiling from Rs.1,000 crore to Rs.2,500 crore.

07 CITY BMC contractor, society secretary arrested By Tariq Khan

T

hree weeks after a five- year- old boy got electrocuted to death at Karve Nagar in Kanjurmarg, police have arrested the BMC contractor and the society secretary for negligence. Shahid Shaikh died on the spot on 5th of April. Cleaning up of sewage was going on in the society. The Kanjurmarg police made the arrests based on a detailed report submitted by the BMCiled report submitted by the BMC. Investigations revealed that residents didn’t allow the contractor to take back the drainage machine as they were afraid he would not return the next day. Shaikh, was electrocuted at 8 am the next day because residents had switched on a drainage pipe which led electricity to flow into the water. No BMC official had reached the spot to start work at that point of time. According to the police, water was being pumped out from the nullah using an electric water pump; this water was flowing into the pool nearby. Shaikh, who was getting groceries from a local shop, stepped into the pool and got electrocuted. The nullah between building B2 and A1 was blocked. After various complaints, the BMC started a cleaning operation. The operation was part of an elaborate clean-up project before elections. Kanjurmarg police have registered a case of death by negligence because the contractor failed to erect barricades or put up signage warning passersby. A report was submitted by the BMC clarifying the role of their staff. BMC contractor Mishra

and secretary of the society, Usman Khan were arrested on Friday and were released on bail. A source at the BMC said, “The sewerage operation department submitted a report to the police. The contractor should have informed the ward office or local police station when the residents forced him to leave behind his equipment. The residents should have taken precaution as the connection was given directly from the metre baox which is unsafe. The report stated that the contractor had ignored all safety guidelines while carrying out work on the site. BMC officials had no role in the incident.” Shaikh’s parents said that he was seeking admission in a new school and had an interview on the day of incident. “We were made to run door-to-door to seek justice for our son. I hope the negligent people are punished. We will seek compensation from the BMC,” said Tabrez Shaikh, father of the deceased. “My son died on the spot. Locals spotted him as he fell on the ground. When they tried to reach him they too were shock by the electrified water. They had to wait for half an hour till the building secretary came and opened the metre box to switch off the pump.” Investigators believe the current may have been generated either because of a fault in the electric water pump or because of the wires around during the cleaning operation of the nullah in the area. The duo has been booked under Section 304 A (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Kejriwal campaigns in Benares

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

EDIT PAGE

DESPATCH & COURIER

Ponder awhile... It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. — Joseph Stalin

Poll: Real issues ignored; now it is low-level attacks

T

HE street in which Arvind Kejriwal held his ‘chaupal’ was narrow, filthy and crowded. Stray dogs wandered between the small collection of red plastic chairs looking confused and frightened, stray cows added their bit to the excrement that already paved the street and children darted up to AAP volunteers to grab their free Aam Aadmi caps. Kejriwal was meant to arrive at 4 pm so I got there a few minutes before to find that even the stage was not yet ready. Volunteers in white caps were still trying to raise a banner that had his picture on it along with these words. ‘Desh ko bachaney key liye hamara parivar Arvind Kejriwal key netritva mein Aam Aadmi Party key saath hai.’ Behind the rickety stage advertisements for MAA Computer Education and G.S. Coaching Center indicated that Dara Nagar was a middle class locality. I settled myself on a red plastic chair and watched AAP volunteers setting up a very primitive sound system.

E

ven the ideology issue has been forgotten on the 7th stage of voting in the Lok Sabha elections. There is no more talk of even secularism. Party campaigners have stopped making promises regarding various welfare projects. They are not talking about rendering service and building the country. Campaigning appears to have changed course: What we see is a war of abuses, personal attacks. Nobody is spared: Campaigners of various parties make personal remarks. They are assisted by other party leaders who dare make remarks even if they violate the poll conduct. The Election Commissioner has some extra work to do in the 2014 elections. He does pull those who go against the code, serves notices. Some apologise and there are leaders like UP's Azam Khan, instead of tendering apology, attacks the Election Commission itself. The leader who has received the largest and most scathing attacks is BJP's prime minister nominee Narendra Modi. Chief Minister Mamata Banerji is an angry woman today. When Narendra Modi said she has grabbed some Rs.1.8 crore from the sale of a painting, she flew into a rage and said Narendra Modi is a devil. NCP leader Sharad Pawar said Narendra Modi was like Hitler. Other abuses hurled at Modi: He has got eyes like a demon; He is a barbarian. A Congress leader called him butcher of Gujarat; Bihar's Lalu Prasad Yadav improved on this and said Narendra Modi is better than a butcher; what he evidently wanted to say was 'worse' than a butcher. Priyanka Vadra who is campaigning for her mother and brother in Amethi and Rae Bareili termed an opposition party a party of rats. It is certain that in the next few stages, the fight is likely to reach even lower levels.

stage to talk of how ‘darkness will be dissipated by the light of an AAP victory’ and how Modi had gone off in his helicopter because he knew that Benares would never accept him. There were Muslim speakers who talked of the city’s ‘ganga-jamuni tehzeeb’ and recited satirical poems about how the new education policy had a clause that said only the children of the rich could study in Dehra Dun...’the rest of you get used to becoming rickshaw pullers’. It was 5.30 by the time Kejriwal arrived to cries of Vande Matram, Har Har Mahadev, Inquilab Zindabad and Bharat Mata ki Jai. He began his meeting by asking how many people in the audience would be voting for Modi and when he saw that far too

The sound system was primitive A man who introduced himself as a founder member of AAP came and sat on the chair next to me and asked if I was from Delhi. When I said yes he seemed relieved and explained that all the volunteers at the meeting were from Delhi and were finding it hard to negotiate their way around Benares. His name was Rajnish Verma and he forewarned me that Kejriwal would not be coming before 5.30. So we had a little chat. As if to explain why the sound system was so crackly and primitive he said that AAP did not have the funds to compete with the BJP. ‘Ambani and Adani have put in Rs.1,000 crore into Modi’s campaign,’ he said ‘but we hope nevertheless to be able to get between 100 and 150 seats in the Lok Sabha so that we can be the main opposition party. The Congress is finished.’ When I told him that I had witnessed the exhibition of mass support that greeted Modi when he came to file his nomination papers the day before he was dismissive. ‘The people are stupid,’ he said and with that our conversation ended because the sound system was now alive with crackly slogans. Har Har Mahadev. Inquilab Zindabad. ‘Paisey pey, na daru pey. Button dabbeyga jhadu pey.’ Soon local poets and politicians appeared on the

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh many hands went up he told them of how he had a similar experience in a village recently and of how he had convinced them otherwise. Then he announced that he was not here to make a speech but to have a conversation and asked if there was anyone who would like to ask him a question. So a man went up to the stage and asked him why he was against Modi adding that he was wrong to oppose Modi because he had done so much for Gujarat. He made a longish speech for someone who was meant only to ask a question so Kejriwal stopped the questions and began his own speech. In it he said all the things that he usually tells people. In self-congratulatory tones he talked of how it was he who had first exposed the land deals of Robert Vadra. He told them that the so-called development in Gujarat was a myth created by the media that

Cunningness is no substitute for intelligence I

ntelligence is not against innocence, remember. Intelligence is the flavor of innocence, intelligence is the fragrance of innocence. Cunningness is against innocence; and cunningness, cleverness are not synonymous with intelligence. But to be intelligent needs a tremendous journey inwards. No schools can help, no colleges, no universities can help. Parents, priests, the society, they are all extrovert; they cannot help you to go inwards. And buddhas are very rare, few and far between. Not everybody is fortunate enough to find a buddha. Only a buddha can help you to be an intelligent person, but you cannot find so many buddhas who want to become primary school teachers and high school teachers and university professors; it is impossible. So there is a substitute for intelligence. Cunningness is a substitute for intelligence – a very poor substitute, remember. And not only is it a poor substitute, it is just the opposite of it too. The intelligent person is not cunning; certainly intelligent, but his intelligence keeps his innocence intact. He does not sell it for mundane things. The cunning person is ready to sell his soul for small things. Judas sold Jesus for only thirty silver coins – just thirty silver coins. And a Jesus can be sold. Judas must have thought that he was being very intelligent, but he was simply cunning. If you don’t like the word ‘cunning’ you

can call him clever; that is just a good name for the same thing, for the same ugly thing. The society prepares you to be cunning so that you are capable of competing in this struggle for existence, the struggle to survive. It is a cut-throat competition, everybody is after everybody else’s throat. People are ready to do anything to succeed, to be famous, to climb the ladder of success, name and fame. They are ready to use you as stepping-stones. Unless you are also cunning you will be sim-

MATTER & SPIRIT ply used, manipulated. Society is cunning. For centuries man has learned that you can survive in this society only if you are cunning; the more cunning you are, the more successful you will be. That’s the whole game of politics: be cunning, be more cunning than others. It is a constant struggle. Hence the society trains every child to be cunning, and these layers of cunningness are hiding your innocence. Innocence has not to be achieved, it is already there. Hence it is not a question of becoming, it is your being. It has only to be discovered – or rediscovered. You have to drop all that you have learned from others, and you will immediately be innocent. Hence my antagonism towards all knowledge that is borrowed. Don’t quote the Bible, don’t quote the Gita. Don’t behave like

he had exposed by going there and discovering that there was enormous corruption in postings and that the farmers were desperate and poor. Ambani-Adani, he said, were the only people who had benefited from the Gujarat model of development that was why they had put Rs.5,000 crore into Modi’s campaign. ‘And, think how much they will want to make from this if he does get elected?’

‘You need guts to give up a CM’s job’ Then he told them that he was the only person who had dared register an FIR against Mukesh Ambani. He had done this as chief minister of Delhi in the face of immense opposition from officials who warned him that he had no right to do this because it was against the Constitution. The small gathering applauded his bravery. This emboldened him to compare himself to Ram. He could have refused to give up the throne and spend fourteen years in the wilderness but he did not. ‘These days it is hard to get a peon to give up his job and I gave up the job of being chief minister as a matter of principle. For this they charge me with running away from governing Delhi, they call me a ‘bhagoda’ but they do not know that to give up such a big job a 56” chest is not enough you need guts.’ When he started to outline his achievements in 49 days of being Delhi’s chief minister I decided it was time to go because what I had hoped to hear about was Kejriwal’s economic and political agenda. What his policies would be like and of this I heard not a single word. All he did was attack the two main political parties in this election and praise himself. All he did was attack big business without explaining whom he would like to see private corporations replaced by. Would he like us to go back to those times when the public sector was all powerful? Would he like us to go back to times when officials had total charge of running India’s economy? He did not say this in so many words but by the time I walked back along that filthy, crowded street in Dara Nagar I was more than certain that in his heart Kejriwal would like these things to happen because in his heart he believes that private enterprise is evil and officials are good. So if I were voting in Benares it would not be for him. parrots. Don’t just go on living on borrowed information. Start seeking and searching for your own intelligence. A negative process is needed; it is to be achieved through via negativa. That is the Buddha’s way. You have to negate all that has been given to you. You have to say, “This is not mine; hence I have no claim over it. It may be true, it may not be true. Who knows? Others say it is so; unless it becomes my experience I cannot agree or disagree. I will not believe or disbelieve. I will not be a Catholic or a communist, I will not be a Hindu or a Mohammedan. I will simply not follow any ideology.” Because, whoever you follow, you will be gathering dust around yourself. Stop following. Here, being with me, you are not my followers, remember it. Friends certainly, but not followers. You are in a love affair with me, but it is not a question of following. And my work here is not to teach you something, but to help you to discover yourself. Just drop all knowledge. It hurts because you have carried that knowledge for so long and you have been bragging so much about that knowledge – your degrees, MAs and PhDs and DLitts, and you have been bragging about all those degrees. And suddenly I am saying to you: Drop all that nonsense. Just be as simple as a child. Just be again a child as you were born, as God sent you into this world. In that mirror like state you will be able to reflect that which is. Innocence is the door to knowing. Knowledge is the barrier and innocence is the bridge. — Osho

at our handy tips and tricks to make sure you save time and energy while doing things around the house and have fun while you’re at it.

All lined up If your child has a lot of toys and not enough patience to store them neatly, attach magnetic strips to a wall in his/ her room. This way, all the cars and other metallic toys can be lined up on the magnetic strip. Not only does this make tidying up after play time more fun for your child, it will turn into a game in itself.

pAntry pockets A shower caddy can help you organise your pantry. Hang one on the inside of your pantry or cupboard door for added storage and convenience. Store items that you use frequently in them for easier access. Keep one slot for candy, one for ready-to-use spices and pastes, one for stock cubes and another for granola bars. We promise you, you’ll have all the sections filled up in no time.

Every home has at least one giant bag filled with smaller plastic bags that can be re-used, but never end up being utilised because no one wants to sort through the mess. Instead, get hold of a few empty tissue boxes and tape them to the wall, or on the inside of a cupboard. Label them small, medium and large and stash your plastic bags in them, size wise. This makes taking them out easier and keeps them organised and dirt free!

drAwer dividers Is the drawer in your study a black hole? If you remember putting stuff in there but can never find it simply because there is too much junk accumulating in it, an easy solution is to hold on to small cereal boxes (and other boxes of a similar size). Then, slice them lengthways so that you get two shallow trays. Use these trays in your drawer to segregate stuff such as clips, wires, pens and important bills. To make it prettier, you can also cover the boxes in fabric or colourful paper.

From jumbled wires to an unruly pile of toys — there is just so much that can grate on your nerves during the course of a day. So, Shirley Mistry tells you about some easy hacks to get rid of all the small problems that nag you on a daily basis

Make your way out of the mess and head towards the kitchen to cook dinner and you end up walking over a trail of toys that your child has carelessly left behind. You try not to lose your cool, but it takes one look at your pantry to realise that it is a giant heap of items and in all likelihood, you’re going to have to spend

MagnetIc actIon Just like we suggested taking care of your child’s toys by putting up a magnetic strip, the idea works well with spices too! Attach a magnetic strip to the bottom of your cupboard or on a wall and store all your spices in jars with metal tops that will attach themselves to the magnet. This way, you can get easier access to commonly used ingredients and save on shelf space as well.

well PaIred If your shoe cabinet is a jumbled heap, get hold of a few magazine holders and put a pair of flats in each slot of the magazine holder. This way, not only will they get aired out, they will be more visible and easier to locate.

Stay organISed If your desk craves organisation and you have a lot of tinned food, you’re in luck. No, we haven’t lost our minds. Remove the stickers from empty food tins and wash them well. Choose a range of sizes and then paint them. Once the paint dries, glue them together so that they form a circle. Use this to segregate your pens, pencils, scissors, clips and wires/ cords.

Put wIne rackS to uSe If you have a wine rack to spare, use it to beautify your bathroom and add some storage space. Roll up towels, slippers and bathrobes and put each in one slot. Not only will your towels stay separated, they will also look classy.

Free StandIng SPace Bathrooms in most houses are tiny and cramming all your products onto a slim sink isn’t the best idea. So, get hold of an old CD rack (or buy a new one) and hang/ drill it into the wall above your sink horizontally so that you have several small slots for all your essentials.

organISe your braceletS If you have a bunch of bangles and bracelets that keep getting jumbled up, mount a toilet paper holder on the inside of your cupboard and slide all your bracelets on to it. This way, you will be able to see all of them at a glance and will be able to save cupboard space too.

All you need to do is find a painting that covers it, attach two narrow hinges to one side and mount it on your wall so that you can swing back the painting (just like you would open a door) to reach the switchboard right behind it.

Paint the head of each key a different colour so that you can differentiate between them easily. the wires don’t unwind and get jumbled up. This works well with toasters and juicers or even heat styling tools such as straighteners, blow dryers and curlers.

be bIb-ready If you have a toddler, make meal time less messy by attaching a basic hook to the back of his/ her high chair. Hang a few bibs on it so that they are easy to access and so that your child doesn’t make more of a mess while you’ve gone off to fetch a bib for him/ her.

The Tune of success Actor, singer and lyricist — Neha Saraf has a lot of experience under her belt and was also recently seen in the Hindi theatre adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Rhea Dhanbhoora talks to her about balancing several different careers and her love for theatre

>> Neha is comfortable being an actor, and singer as well as a lyricist

S

till in her twenties, Neha Saraf has a lot to be proud of. With a bevy of songs (that she wrote herself ), theatre performances and films in her kitty, she has a lot going for her. Her recent claim to fame is a collection of her songs that were recently featured in the womancentric film Gulaab Gang. She also played Sauriya in Swanand Kirkire’s musical Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhe and Phool Singh in Atul Kumar’s Piya Behrupiya. She was a lead character in the film Gaanja Kali, based on Amrita Pritam’s story and has been a part of big-budget film, Heroine. She is currently performing in Barvi Raat, a Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which was part of the World Shakespeare Festival in London. The versatile performer is as comfortable on stage and in front of the camera as she is acting in movies and being behind the scenes writing lyrics as well and even though she already has a lot to her credit, she isn’t quite done building her portfolio yet! Here, she talks to us about films, acting and what she’s looking forward to in the future. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am an actor, singer and lyricist. I studied acting at the National School of Drama (NSD). I am also a theatre artist and have been involved in a lot of writing work. So, you’re an actor, singer, lyricist — how did you manage to delve into so many different fields? At NSD, we were trained in all aspects of film making. So, I am used to managing several different things at the same time. The stage lured me since I was a child. I loved performing. I used to sing, dance, act and involve myself in everything to do with theatre. I used to participate in inter-school and inter-college competitions and I worked hard towards making my childhood dream turn into reality.

Tell us about your association with theatre. I’ve been performing on stage since I was a child. I loved the applause I got after every performance and it encouraged me to perform better and pursue theatre professionally. A live audience appreciating your work makes it a memorable experience, every time you are on the stage. You’re in the Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Tell us about how you got involved with the project and what audiences can expect from it. We’ve already participated in a festival in London, where participants from 37 countries showcased all of Shakespeare’s plays. Honestly, I was really nervous because of the language barrier and the fact that everyone is so well versed with all his plays meant that there was no scope for mistakes. But, we were thrilled to see the amazing reaction. Everyone present there appreciated our efforts. You wrote songs for the folk album for Gulaab Gang. How did you land that project? In late 2010 or early 2011, Soumit Sen, Director of Gulaab Gang, and I were chatting and he told me that he is making a movie about Bundelkhand. I told him I am from Bundelkhand and one thing lead to another. After two more conversations over coffee, he realised that I know a lot about the culture, so he asked me to write songs for the film. I agreed and then wrote my first song for the film (Dheemi Dheemi). He loved all the songs that I wrote and has, in fact, even asked me to write songs for his next film, which I am currently working on. The film made waves for the two female protagonists that have been pitted against each other for the first time in Bollywood. Do you think it’s important to make films

with women in leading roles and why do you think this hasn’t been done yet? Definitely! It is important to make women-centric films. In fact, when I heard the script I thought to myself, now the hero will make an entry and the entire film will be hero centric, but I was happy to learn that the entire film was driven by women. This was one of the major reasons why I agreed to become a part of this film. We don’t have a lot of women centric films. But, there was an era where there were films like Mother India. In fact in the ’60s we had quite a few women centric films, later in the ’80s and ’90s, the focus shifted. Now, cinema is changing again, with films such as Kahaani, Gulaab Gang and Queen. Things are changing slowly, but it’s happening. How did you go about composing for this film — how would you describe the songs in the album? The album is based on folk songs. I have written four songs, each with a different meaning, but a common soul. For example, there is this one song that is about them getting tired of fighting against the world but next morning they are all geared up to fight. The Holi song, Rang se hui rangili Chidiya, is inspired from my childhood memory of catching sparrows and painting them. Writing the songs for this movie gave me a flashback of my childhood.

L’OREAL PARIS 6 OILS NOURISH OIL Oiling your hair is a boring ritual and with this new product, L’Oreal Paris 6 Oils Nourish Oil gives it a refreshing new look. Packaged glamourously in a golden bottle, the formula is lightweight and gets absorbed into the scalp almost instantly, which makes it the safest oil to apply overnight without the fear of it seeping into your pillow case. Since it is lightweight, it also helps keep all the greasiness and shine post oiling your hair away. But, the effects of the hair oil are not at all as expected. It does not entirely moisturise your hair as it claims to. The hair oil claims to make your hair shiny, smooth, manageable, soft, think and strong. While it does make your hair shiny, smooth and manageable when it’s used as a hair serum after a hair wash instead of as a hair oil, it does not make your hair thick or strong. All in all, it’s best used as an economical variant to a serum rather than as a hair oil. PRICE `199 for 100 ml WHERE Retail outlets across the city STAR RATING **

SAMEERA REDDY

The muted tones with pops of orange makes this outfit both formal and fun. The intricate vertical details make the actress look slimmer and taller. However, our only grouse is that her hair and makeup don’t seem red carpet ready.

FACE SUNSCREEN With the sun blazing overhead, sunscreen is one product you just can't skip. These picks are formulated especially for your face, so that you get maximum protection.

It looks like Sameera is going for aunty chic with her look. First, we aren’t fans of the new haircut. Second, shoulder pads aren’t meant for girls with big shoulders. And finally, the closed shoes and high collar make her look bulky. A major fashion fail.

Save Avon Solutions Sun UV Protective Lotion: This sunscreen by Avon is sweat-proof, waterproof and nongreasy, which makes it ideal for everyday use. With an SPF of 40 and aloe vera gel, it will not only keep you safe from the sun, it will also keep your skin cool. Price `499 for 75g Splurge Vichy Capital Soleil Velvety Cream: This one from Vichy promises to dry to a velvety finish while giving you protection from the sun with an SPF factor of 50. Apart from this, it also promises to lighten dark spots, clear your skin and even claims to have anti-ageing properties in it's formula. Price `1,090 for 50ml

This is a clear example of how not to wear a jumpsuit. The crotch is too long and instead of floaty, it's just plain oversized. The drawstring in the middle kills any elegance the look might have had. But, her makeup is spot on — we love the coral lipstick.

Who says monochrome has to be boring? Though the outfit is pretty simple, we think that Kriti has carried it off well. The blingy shoes add a nice touch but what we love most is her hairstyle. Rolling waves are the perfect look for the summer.

This is the reason why Sridevi is one of our most iconic heroines. The actress looks stunning and sexy in this white jumpsuit. We love that she’s kept the rest of her look clean with an elegant up do and minimal accessories. A sophisticated outfit all round.

Choosing what to eat for lunch at work can be a hassle and during the summer, a heavy lunch will make you lazy and less productive. That’s why Yamini Walia finds out the best summer lunch options that will keep your productivity up

F

eeling dizzy while you work? Maybe it’s because you didn’t eat properly at lunch. Most work is done post-lunch, so eating the right type of food is important. During the summer, your meals need to be light as well as healthy. So, opt for something that contains the required amount of nutrients and water content. Read on to find out what you should eat.

Fruits and salads Including salads and fruits in your meal will help you stay refreshed. These are healthy and will keep you cool during work hours. Also, they maintain the required water content in your body. Salads are easy to make and don’t take much of your time to prepare in the morning. Eat fruits 15-20 minutes before your meal.

avoid junk Food Avoid eating junk food for lunch. It's hot, greasy and lacks healthy nutrients. It won’t give you the energy you require to bear the summer heat and will make you less productive as well. If you must eat junk food, save it for the cooler hours of the day.

Fresh vegetables Incorporate fresh vegetables in every meal during the summer. They add a refreshing element to all your meals. Whether it's in a sandwich, a wrap or with rice, fresh vegetables will give you the boost you require to work post lunch.

steer clear oF dark meat Dark meat generates a lot of heat, which is not good for your body during summer. You should eat something cool and healthy, not something that generates heat. Meats are a big no no for a healthy lunch option. If you can’t stay without meat then opt for low-sodium meats and try fish, since it is lighter.

avoid packaged Food These are not only overpriced, but also less nutritious. They contain fat, calories and are high in sodium. You will lose all motivation and definitely end up sleeping after eating packaged food for lunch. If you don’t have time to cook, order healthy food from a restaurant instead of eating packaged food.

pick variety Variety is the spice of life! Pick different things every day for your lunch. Include items with fibre such as fruits, whole grains and crackers. Make sure your meal is rich in at least three or four different food groups that include dairy, protein and carbohydrates such as bread.

dealing With a mean boss

I am an intern at a well-known event management company. I have an immediate boss, who is a very mean person. She gossips and is deliberately nasty to other interns. She talks maliciously about other interns to me and I am sure she talks the same way about me to others. She throws her weight around and all the other colleagues keep quiet because they fear that she might say something to them. I don’t want to spoil my rapport with her and do intend to get good feedback from the company. But, at the same time I am dreading each day around her and still have another month of internship left. Please help. — sampada talwar, grant road dear sampada, Welcome to the corporate world! Although this is a common occurence, it is sad that instead of welcoming freshers, existing employees are behaving like this. Being nasty towards employees is unethical. It is very

important to be firm and let your boss know that you are not going to be bullied. Catch your boss in a moment and try to talk to her. Clarify misunderstandings and explain that she is being nasty. If you think talking is not helping you, pass a casual joke about this in front of your boss’ boss. Being a polite whistle blower might help as well. However, make sure you tread carefully lest you end up looking like nothing but a disgruntled intern who doesn’t want to buck up and can’t survive the big, bad work sphere. Only go to her boss if you’re sure that your work is perfect and that you are not even slightly at fault. After all, she has been an employee longer than you have — her boss needs a really good reason to pull her up instead of you! send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

« top 5: utility

Chop, Chop!

items we love Shirley Mistry tells you about five utility items that we’re currently going gaga over, including handbag and travel essentials

Instead of investing in a rotimaker or a juicer that will take up tons of space in your kitchen but will never be used, add these nifty kitchen tools to your collection. They are small, effective and make cooking much more fun, says, Shirley Mistry

1. hand SanitiSer Yes, we know that hand sanitisers have been around for ages and no, we aren’t late to the party. But, instead of keeping a bottle buried at the bottom of your bag, buy a hand sanitiser holder that you can wrap around the strap of your handbag. This way, when you have dirty hands, you don’t have to rummage through the entire contents of your bag to locate your sanitiser. Simply flip open the cap and your emergency will be well taken care of. 2. Bra holder If you travel and often end up with expensive bras that have lost their shape because they got squished in transit, do your wallet a favour and invest in a bra holder instead of a new bra. Designed to accommodate two to three bras, these hard cases ensure that no weight falls on your bras and that they maintain their shape in your suitcase. >> The bra holder will maintain the shape of your expensive bras in your suitcase

>> Invest in these kitchen tools to make cooking more fun and less stressful

I

f you avoid cooking dishes that require you to slice a kilo of onions or shirk away from recipes that use separated eggs, your time in the kitchen is about to become a lot more fun. We tell you about some innovative kitchen tools that are sure to make cooking more fun, mess free and quicker, so that you are no longer frazzled in the kitchen, or overwhelmed by the many things you need to get done in time for dinner.

Mezzaluna chopper Mezzaluna means half moon in Italian, and as the name suggests, this chopper has a half moon-shaped blade attached to two handles on either side. It is great for quickly chopping herbs, nuts and even to roughly chop chocolate. When precise cuts aren’t a priority, the mezzaluna chopper comes in handy, simply because you have to go back and forth, in an adhoc manner and you can chop difficult ingredients quicker than usual. Also, chocolate tends to melt while you are cutting it because of the heat generated by your hands. But, since your hands don’t even touch the ingredient you are chopping, this is perfect for shards of chocolate for a cake topping.

Salad Spinner If you eat salad often, you are all too familiar with the tedious process of

washing your salad leaves thoroughly and then waiting a while for the water to drain off before you can add them to your salad. Instead of waiting for long periods of time, invest in a salad spinner. This nifty plastic bowl-shaped tool involves manually spinning a handle a few times till it gathers momentum — it then spins rapidly on its own, getting rid of all the water without damaging your leaves, in a matter of seconds. So, now you never have to deal with a puddle of water at the bottom of your salad bowl or a diluted salad dressing, as this tool is definitely going to get you your money’s worth.

egg Separator If you bake a lot, separating eggs is a skill that you will need to master. However, if you find that you lack the co-ordination it requires and can never get it right, or simply don’t like to get your hands dirty, investing in an egg separator is your best option. Crack an egg open into it and like a sieve, it will catch the yolk and let the white slide through, making your life infinitely simpler. Buy one of these and you can whip up a meringue or pavlova whenever you fancy!

garlic cruSher Butter-garlic prawns (or butter-garlic anything for that matter) are a personal favourite. But, the garlic stench that is left

behind on your hand for days? Not so much. Which is why this tool made us very happy. Simply pop a clove of garlic into the crusher and press, just like you would to squeeze half a lemon. The pulp comes out of the other end and the best part is that you don’t even need to peel the garlic. Just put the whole clove in, with the skin, for minced garlic in seconds, without the lingering smell.

Mandoline Slicer Save yourself the hassle of slicing heaps of onions, or make your own potato wafers with the help of a mandoline slicer. With blades for varying thickness, a mandoline slicer helps you slice an onion in seconds, making it the perfect tool in an Indian household, where everything is cooked with onions. It is also great for slicing other vegetables thinly for salads and pickles.

Silicone Spatula & tongS Good quality silicone spatulas are great because they are perfect to scrape off every last bit of sauce or gravy from your pots and pans and as a result, washing up becomes much easier. Also, a pair of silicon tongs make it easier to turn meats while pan-frying them and also help toss salads and grip noodles. So, invest in these low maintenance tools to make cooking a lot simpler.

3. Bag hook If you have less space to keep your handbag at work, or hate putting it on the floor, invest in a handbag hook. It latches on to the edge of any table and has a hook at the bottom where you can hang your handbag. So, if you end up sitting with your bag on your lap all through dinner, go buy one of these right now! 4. key finderS If you are all too familiar with standing outside your house holding several heavy bags of groceries and can’t (for the life of you) find your keys in your handbag, purchase a key finder. It is usually a long strip of fabric with a hoop on one end and a clasp on the other. Attach the hoop to any zip inside your handbag (like you would on a key ring) and put your keys onto the clasp. 5. pepper Spray key chainS Just like your keys, you may never actually find your pepper spray when you need it. Find one that latches onto a key chain so that it is extremely easy to find, no matter how much stuff you carry around in your bag. Also, this way, you will have your pepper spray with you even if you step out to buy some groceries with just your wallet and keys.

I have always prided myself on being open-minded and honest with my daughter about everything. I think it is healthy for her to get straightforward answers from me, an educated, strong woman rather than to find out things from other children. A couple of days ago, at breakfast however... Hey mum... what is a Brazilian?

I had not even started on my first cup of coffee and was halfasleep when she asked me... Uh...

WHAT?!

Ummm... ah...

>> According to a new study, rebound relationships are a good way to get over your ex. Read our article to find out about the pros and cons

A new study says that rebound relationships may actually be good for us, breaking conventional opinion. But, are they for you? Dev Goswami helps you find out

R

ebound relationships have always been hotly debated — while there are people who argue that they effectively help you get over a break up, others say that they will just end up making you feel worse. So, which opinion is correct? If you were to go by a recent study, it’s the former. Researchers from Queens College and the University of Illinois surveyed 313 young adults to conclude that those who stayed single for a shorter period of time after a break up recovered faster, had higher dating confidence and improved self-confidence as compared to those who stayed single for longer. While science may believe that’s the truth, we believe that rebound relationships have pros as well as cons. Read on as we help you find out whether a rebound relationship will actually help you deal with a break up.

Pro: Distraction An important benefit of a rebound relationship is that it will keep your mind off your ex. If you are single and are living alone, you’re likely to keep thinking about your failed relationship, which will bring you down. A rebound relationship will keep you occupied and you won’t realise the absence of your ex as much.

con: the baggage Getting into a rebound relationship soon after a break up means that you risk the baggage of your previous relationship affecting the current one. You might end up getting angry with your rebound partner when he does something that reminds you of your ex or of your previous relationship.

Pro: You feel wanteD One of the most common emotions after a break up is feeling unloved. This feeling can play havoc with a person’s self-esteem. That’s why rebound relationships help you feel good about

yourself. They make you feel loved, wanted and make feel like you are in fact, a good partner.

con: You question Yourself

My ex-boyfriend and I dated for a year and only broke up because he couldn’t handle a commitment. But, we decided to remain friends. Now, one of his friends has asked me out and although I think I still like my ex, there’s no future with him. The

That’s someone who comes from Brazil!

If you don’t know exactly what you’re getting into, you might soon be troubled with questions such as ‘What am I doing?,’ ‘Am I hurting him (the new partner)?’ or ‘Am a lousy person?.’ This can completely negate the benefits of feeling wanted or loved. Unless your mind is clear about the idea of a rebound relationship, it can end up working against you.

Pro: freeDom! You might argue that you would have more freedom if you were single. However, there is a difference between doing things on your own or with your girlfriends (who, you might think are just pitying you) and doing them with your partner. All the things that you couldn’t do with your ex, you can now do with your rebound partner.

con: someone gets hurt It could be you, it could be your rebound partner, or worse, it could be both of you — it doesn't matter whether you've clearly set the rules of your relationship; if either of you start developing stronger feelings for the other, someone is bound to get hurt. this could go on to cause another messy break up — defeating the whole purpose. So, what should you do? Regardless of what science has to say, we think that this is a choice that depends on whether you and your rebound partner can handle the consequences that are sure to follow. There are benefits as well as disadvantages and whether it is going to work for you or not will ultimately depend on you.

Nocturnal emission

I used to masturbate regularly for two years. I stopped it since last two months. Ever since I stopped masturbating I star ted getting wet dreams causing nightfall. Is there anything wrong with my reproductive system? How do I get myself treated? Wet dreams, nightfall or ‘nocturnal emission of semen’ are different names of the same phenomenon, and this phenomenon is perfectly normal. At the age of 12-13, the testes in boys start producing sperms. At this age boys start developing sexual attraction towards girls, and start discharging semen during sleep. This discharge is invariably accompanied by sexual dreams. This is a normal, natural, involuntary and uncontrollable response to sexual tension that gets built up within the body due to sex hormones. There is no reason to be worried, frightened or feel guilty about a wet dream. It happens with all men and is not a disease. It is completely harmless and has no ill effect on one’s

I am really very uneasy and disturbed. I started liking one girl in my class since few months. I think and fantasize about her of ten. She is single and very beautiful. She does not respond to me and will also be shifting to another town with her family. This is causing a lot of pain in my hear t. The whole atmosphere at my home is also sad as my parents don’t get along and fight openl y and bitterl y. I need someone to love in my life. What should I do? I can feel the agony in your words. It is clear that you are not happy with the environment at home and are looking for a ‘home away from home’, which is why you are so emotionally needy of a relationship. It is also very clear that this girl you talk about is not responding to your overtures. Therefore, pursuing her in reality or in fantasy will get you nowhere except ‘down in the dumps’. Let her go. It is now imperative that you create a life for yourself, which will increase

your self-worth. ‘Beauty is not skin deep’ – every person is endowed with unique qualities, which need to be fully utilised to make a unique contribution to society. You are no exception. Therefore, get going and be ‘the best of who you can be’. Educate yourself, identify your talents and get training to exploit them to the maximum, remain socially active by taking some courses, doing some community work and participating in group activities in college and even otherwise. In this way you will increase your self-worth and get out of your ‘neediness’. Also, try to understand and forgive your parents for the family atmosphere as they are living in the only way they know how to live. This will free you of the inner unrest that you are experiencing, and keep you in the right ‘space’ to welcome a companion in your life. Don’t be in a hurry. Wait for the one who likes you for who you are. In the meantime, move towards being the best of who you can be. MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2014

We got a chance to talk to Samiksha Bhatnagar about her antagonist role in 'Kumkum Bhagya'. Here are some excerpts from our conversation with her

Whatever role I have had till now is very elegant, be it positive or negative. I have never been at a disadvantage because of my height.

Tell us some of the work you have done in the past? I did 'Niyati' on Sahara(it was negative role), 'Kya Hua Tera Wada' (as Mona Singh's sister), 'Veera' (Kartar's wife), 'Mahadev' ( Mandodhari), 'Sanskar Laxmi' (negative role) and now 'Kum Kum Bhagya' (negative role)

What type of reality show you want to do? I am looking forward to dance shows, especially 'Jhalak'. I am a dancer and am capable of doing any style. And I have this intuition that I will definitely win wherever I participate. If I get a chance to do Big Boss I am open to that too. Never say never.

And your character in 'Kum Kum Bhagya'? My character's name is Mitali. She is shown as well educated female, a very classy women full of attitude. But she is moneyminded and seen wearing glamourous sarees and Punjabi suits. She exists in a negative role in this show.

Talk to us about your struggle in Mumbai? I did struggle in my career but it was not that difficult for me. I have also done theatre. In face, I recently did a Japanese play 'Roshomon Blues'.

And what are your extra activities apart from acting ? I have done my PhD in Kathak and a Master's in classical singing. I am open to playback singing also.

And your family...? I am the youngest daughter in my family I Have you ever met Ekta Kapoor ? What you have three brothers; all are married. My famthink about letter 'K' ? ily is very supportive of me making a career Yes, I met Ekta Kapoor once. Since the letter in acting. 'K' has been lucky for her, after a small sabbatical, she has decided to come back to it. Do you think good looks are important to become an actress? Have you faced any problems in the indus- Yes, good looks are important. Also first imtry because of your height ? pression is the last impression, and the way I am 5' 6” and I think it's a standard height. you carry yourself is always noticed.

BIRTHDAY FORECAST: You can look forward to a period of growth and prosperity. The first couple of months are particularly favorable for career and financial matters. A new investment will yield good results. Students keen on higher studies abroad will set out on their journey soon. The married will enjoy delightful togetherness, while those in love will be overwhelmed by the sensual response of their beloved. BABIES BORN TODAY: Middle stature, compact body, and handsome, with prominent nose and bright eyes. Will be aggressive, gregarious and very independent. Would make a good advisor or consultant rather than take a regular job. Will find routine of any kind boring. Will be fortunate, sensitive and attached to family. Success, fame and happiness are indicated. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Financial gains are indicated in short-term ventures or even in a speculative transaction. If you proceed carefully you may reap rich dividends in the future from a daring move made now. You may be given an unusual opportunity through the goodwill and loyalty of a friend.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Concentrate on your regular work activities. Have patience, it is through the normal channels that you will achieve what you want. Some of you will be required to pay an installment for a house or means of conveyance. You can look forward to a relaxed evening at home. You will get a chance for doing something for someone special, which will bring you a lot of satisfaction and happiness.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Rushed expansion, or taking on more work than you can handle, could be the cause of the present predicament. All is not lost help is at hand. There is a tendency to misinterpret a person’s friendship as flirtation or romantic interest. Be sure before you make a fool of yourself.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Look forward to making new alliances in new business ventures. Those working independently or as consultants will sign a major contract. A new friendship could create problems with a close associate who will be feeling very possessive about you. Handle the situation tactfully.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): You will have to pay attention to work on hand as you seem to be unable to meet set deadlines. You will be tied up with documents, articles or public appearances and presentations. You may desperately need a break from routine. It is bad economics to seek change or take a break right now.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Meetings and negotiations will have a favorable outcome. Money ceases to be a problem. Travel would also be fruitful. Do all that you can to cash in on the lucky break coming your way. Stay away from intrigues and maneuverings and get ahead in your work.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): The pressure of new work, which comes along suddenly, could upset your plan for taking a break or withdrawing from routine work. There may be some problems at home. IN BRIEF

REAL ROUT HOLDERS

BAYERN TO REACH LISBON FINAL

M

UNICH: Real Madrid reached their first Champions League final for 12 years with an historic 4-0 win at Bayern Munich in the semi-final, second leg to knock the holders out. Having won last week's first leg 1-0 in Madrid, Real won the semifinal 5-0 on aggregate as Pep Guardiola's Bayern suffered their heaviest home defeat in European competition yesterday. Bayern had previously never lost at home by more than two goals in Europe as the Bavarian giants saw their dreams of reaching a fourth Champions League final in five years crushed.

"We have witnessed a debacle, we didn't put enough passion into it," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "We have to keep our nerve and stay rational." Real are now one game away from 'La Decima' - their 10th European title - and will face either neighbours Atletico Madrid or Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in the May 24 final in Lisbon. Real centre-back Sergio Ramos produced two early bullet headers to dismiss Bayern's dreams of becoming the first team to defend the Champions League title. World Player of the Year Cris-

tiano Ronaldo made it 3-0 at the break before the Real superstar netted his 49th goal of the season with a free-kick just before the final whistle. Having now netted 16 times in this season's Champions League, Ronaldo set a new record for the most goals in a single European campaign, bettering the previous mark of 14 set by Barcelona's Lionel Messi and ex-AC Milan forward Jose Altafini. "Today Madrid have gone to a level that will be recognised across the world and to score two goals is a dream," said Ramos. "The final in Lisbon is a

dream. It has been a long time coming." The only downside to Real's stunning win in Germany was the loss of Xabi Alonso for the Lisbon final after he picked up his third booking of the campaign for a first-half foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger. But there was no denying an historic night for Real, especially for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has now never lost to Bayern in eight matches, six times with former club AC Milan and twice with Madrid. The Italian is through to his fourth Champions League final as a coach, equalling the record.

Warner, Rahul steer Hyderabad to 172 for five in tie vs Mumbai D

Hyderabad Sunrisers Lokesh Rahul congratulates David Warner on his fifty.

UBAI: David Warner hit a fighting half-century and combined well with Lokesh Rahul (46) for a superb 111-run partnership as Sunrisers Hyderabad scored a competitive 172 for five against struggling Mumbai Indians in their IPL match, here today. Warner worked hard for runs initially but once he got his eye in and was settled, the Australian left-hander scored runs at a brisk pace. He hit more sixes (4) than fours (1) in his 51-ball knock before departing towards the end of the SRH innings. Rahul also contributed in Hyderabad's decent total by supporting Warner well in their third-wicket stand, following cheap dismissal of their openers. Veteran paceman Zaheer Khan (2/26) bowled with good rhythm and succeeded in sending Shikhar Dhawan (6) and Aaron Finch (16) back to dugout inside the first five overs. The SRH skipper edged one to Harbhajan Singh in slips immediately after hitting a boundary while Finch, who yet again looked in good touch, failed to keep a drive on the ground and was caught in covers by Ben Dunk. Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh also bowled well and at the same time SRH batsmen did not lack in application and were maintaining a decent run-rate. Prgyan Ojha was the only Mumbai bowler who failed to make an impact. He

was hit for consecutive boundaries by Rahiul and was also punished by Warner, who smashed the spinner to a huge six over the mid-wicket. In his first two overs, the left-arm spinner leaked 25 runs, allowing SRH to overcome the early loss of the openers. At half-way mark, SRH were 71 for two, albeit there were not much boundaries, only six at that stage. Warner and Rahul had to work hard for runs. They relied on rotating the strike, rather then going for big shots. In fact, at one time, the gap between two boundaries was almost six overs. The shackles were broken when Ojha returned. He first fired his second wide for five runs and then Warner again hammered him for a massive six. Warner did not spare Pollard and even umpire Kumar Dharamasena, who was hit on his shoulders by one of his furious shots. Meanwhile this was the last chance for Mumbai to notch a win in Dubai, this being the final match in the Gulf. One win separates Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, with both having played four games each. Hyderabad are one win better off while Mumbai Indians, the last edition's champions, haven't tasted success yet. Brief scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 172 for 5 in 20 overs (David Warner 65, Lokesh Rahul 46; Zaheer Khan 2/26).

Thorpe out of hospital after battling infections

SYDNEY: Australian swimming great Ian Thorpe has left a Sydney hospital after battling serious infections for more than three weeks following shoulder surgery, his manager said. At one point there were reports that the 31-year-old five-time Olympic gold medallist would lose the use of his left arm, although they proved unfounded. "It looks as though the infections have cleared up. It can always re-infect as it's done twice before but we are hopeful," his manager James Erskine told Australian Associated Press in confirming he was out of hospital.

Hurt and pain of last six months still affecting me: Jwala

NEW DELHI: Threatened with a ban by the administrators and labelled an enfant terrible by her detractors, ace shuttler Jwala Gutta says such has been the "hurt and pain" of the last six months that she has not been able celebrate her bronze medal at the recent Asian Badminton Championships to the fullest. India's best doubles player, Jwala had to endure a bitter legal battle with the Badminton Association of India after its disciplinary committee recommended a life ban on her for allegedly delaying a match between Krrish Delhi Smashers and Banga Beats in the Indian Badminton League which was held recently.

Don't take dietary supplements at all, says Moses to athletes

MUMBAI: American track legend Edwin Moses feels athletes should stay away from all dietary supplements to escape possible future doping bans instead of claiming ignorance on testing positive for banned substances. "I think that athletes are making a mistake if they are trying to be aware of what is in every single substance. It is easier just to say 'no'. You just have to say 'no' instead of taking the 'I didn't know' approach. You cannot have it both ways," Moses has told World Anti Doping Agency's official publication 'Play True'. Moses replied to a query whether the sheer number of supplements available today make it more difficult for an athlete (to stay drug free).

SC clears deck for announcement of RCA poll result

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court cleared the deck for declaration of result of Rajasthan Cricket Association elections and asked the poll observer to declare it on May 6. Brushing aside the objection of BCCI which is expecting that the result might go in favour of former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, a bench headed by Justice A R Dave directed the registry to send the results, filed in a sealed envelope, before it by its appointed observer Justice (retd) N M Kasliwal, to the observer to declare the result.
