The SC verdict has given the residents of Campa Cola a breather – a time upto Nov. 11 to vacate their ‘illegal’ flats By Vishnudas Sheshrao
T
he Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a breather of four weeks to the residents of Worli’s Campa Cola Housing Society to vacate their flats. Residents who are losing hopes approached to request the crusader against corruption, Anna Hazare, to lend his support in their fight for justice. The Supreme Court verdict saved Campa Cola Housing Society from the civic body’s hammer for four weeks. Residents are knocking all possible doors to save their houses including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Anna Hazare. The apex court said that the residents can stay in the Campa Cola compound until November 11, after which they can sue the builders but can't stay on. The builders of the seven buildings, which were constructed between 1981 to1989, were permitted to raise only five floors. However, the builders flouted norms and built two towers of 17 and 20 floors each and Continued on pg 8 «

OPINIONS
Will police patrol near schools and colleges prevent sexual assaults?
Khooshnum Davierwala Lawyer Yes. It will definitely reduce sexual assaults in and around educational institutions.
Priya Mayekar Lawyer No. Full time protection is not possible, as this being a social responsibility, general public should come forth and voice out injustice happening in the vicinity. Through this we can help the police department for further action. Farheen Siddiqui News producer Yes. Police patrolling in the vicinity of schools and colleges will reduce the number of crimes happening in and around the area.
Rahul Iyer Media freelancer No. The incidents of crimes happening in trains, on roads and isolated places with minors and teenagers is far greater than those happening in and around schools and colleges. So, it won’t serve a purpose.
Neha Jayakar Banker No. Since most of the molestation cases and sexual assault cases are occurring in trains and private school buses, students would need more protection while travelling.

F
or the first time in the AsianAustralian subcontinent, a patient suffering from severe treatment resistant depression was treated using Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), a technique that is generally used for conditions like epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and a range of other neurological disorders at Jaslok Hospital and Medical Research Centre.
History of the patient: The 26-year-old Benjamin Ward from Australia, having a strong family history of depression began exhibiting symptoms of depression at the age of 21. His family was surprised with Ben’s, as he is called, behavioural changes. “Ben was a very happy child. Even as a teenager or an adult he used to be very social and interactive. It was just before he turned twenty one that he started showing signs of being depressed”, said Ben’s father Colin Ward. Ben used to cry at work and had developed suicidal tendencies. He had lost interest in work and quit his job. He also had increased worries and disturbed sleep at night. No therapy worked: To start off with, Ben’s father had several heart-to-heart and fatherto-son kinds of interactions to find out the cause of Ben’s depression. “I tried talking to him to find out if there has been any tragedy that is making him feel depressed but there was nothing of that kind. We still don’t know the cause of his depression. It just set in”, said Colin. Then began medical assistance for Ben. After consulting a psychiatrist, Benjamin tried several drugs like Mirtazapine, Lithium, Quetiapine, Valdoxan and Methylphenidate but these gave him limited relief for a short duration. He also suffered

from side effects of some drugs. When drugs failed, he took several cycles of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but none gave him the desired results.
ple who suffer from severe depression may have only surgery as the option for treatment, the case has to be studied and analysed thoroughly before going ahead. Parameters like checking if the illness, in this case it being depression, is in its pure form and not mixed with any other mental disorder like obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD) is important. Since 2009, I have screened 29 psychiatric cases of depression and this is the first case that I found to be eligible for DBS. On detailed review, we found that Ben was suffering from treatment resistant major depressive disorder and we felt that he was an ideal candidate for area 25 DBS which is presently being done only in a few selected centres all over the world. Benjamin’s reports revealed that he is suffering from severe grade depression. There was no specific reason for the depression to set in”, said Dr. Doshi. The other surgical method available is called lesioning and this was used to treat a patient of OCD in
The last hope for relief: After every failed attempt of curing his son of depression, Colin through research, found out about Dr. Paresh Doshi, Director of Neurosurgery, Jaslok Hospital and Medical Research Centre, who had successfully performed DBS for several treatment resistant conditions. “I heard that Dr. Doshi has treated many treatment resistant conditions and I saw this as a possible solution for my son’s condition too”, said Colin. What then ensued: For Dr. Doshi to check Ben’s eligibility for DBS was of prime importance. “Very few cases of severe depression can be treated using surgery. Though 10 per cent of peo-

thief who had been stealing laptops and mobile phones from the bags of doctors and other staff at the BMC-run KEM Hospital was nabbed by the security guards on Tuesday. The accused, Avinash Ramakant Kadam, used to enter the hospital as a patient and take away valuables like laptops and cell phones from bags of doctors and other staff from near the out patient departments (OPDs).
VASTU TIP OF THE DAY
Speaking about what happened on Tuesday, Bharat Tiwari, one of the patrolling security guards who caught Pawar, said, “Since August, we have received 19 complaints of theft in the hospital premises. We had been trying our best to nab the thief but could not do so because his face remained hidden from us even in the CCTV footage. On Monday, we got a sketch of this person from the Bhoiwada Police Station as they too have been receiving several complaints of theft. So,
2010 at Jaslok Hospital. Currently, the surgery is done only for severe depression and OCD. Ben underwent DBS for depression on September 25. Results of DBS: While the effect of DBS on Ben’s mental being is to be monitored and analysed over a period of time, the immediate results are positive and reason to smile for Ben’s family and for the doctors at Jaslok Hospital. “From being someone who did not wish to speak to anybody Ben now interacts with the doctors and wants to speak to his close friend James. This definitely is a positive indication that the therapy has worked. Also, according to literature, there are no chances of relapse. We will be monitoring him and remain in touch with the psychiatrist who is handling this case in Australia”, said Dr. Doshi. “It was definitely worth the effort of coming to India”, said Colin. Ben will be discharged in a day or so.

today (Tuesday) as we had a lead, we were scanning the crowd with more alertness and at around 12:30 pm, we saw a man enter the hospital and move around suspiciously. We kept an eye on him and also on the crowd. We then zeroed down on three men who looked similar to the sketch and checked their papers. Two of them turned out to be genuine patients while this man had false papers. He also had papers of several other hospitals along with some blank hospital pa-
pers. We realised that he was the man we were looking for. We took him to the office and on interrogation he confessed to his crime. We then handed him over to Bhoiwada Police Station”. “After he was caught, we recollected having seen him several times in the hospital premises. He has been stealing from several other hospitals in the vicinity”, added Tiwari. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Will you find him at Mani Bhavan in Laburnam Road? perhaps if you look hard enough!
Gandhian within boundaries Y
ou can look around and not find much evidence of the Mahatma in the city. Except for some tightly-controlled corners of Mumbai, the absence of the Apostle of Peace and Non-Violence is a deep wound on our collective psyches. In honour of his birthday today, ADC photographers Vishwanath Salian, Azad Shrivastav & Sushil Kadam went looking for Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and were dismayed at how hard and how far afield one had to look, beyond the obvious places that exist in his name. And if the Mahatma is physically absent, does this mean he is held securely in hearts and minds? The answer lies in the popular percepotion of Mumbai as an unsafe city for women and a violent city for its young and vulnerable. It to make the Mahatma weep from beyond the grave.
Maybe he inhabits the hearts of young men like this artist near the J J School at CST
He is present in our daily monetary transactions, whether they involve the exchange of a fiver or a thousand.
The signboard is crooked, but it says this is Mahatma Road Road in far-flung Kandivli (East). On T-shirts along the Colaba Causeway, the Mahatma is as popular as Che Guevara
And always, in every city, there is a hospital named for him, like this one at Parel.
This statue of the Mahatma near Mantralay is a good reminder of all that he has taught us.
Thankfully, his thoughts still inhabit this bookstore at Tardeo.

ourteen months after the Special Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court granted bail to journalist Jigna Vora, accused in the murder of senior journalist J. Dey for lack of evidence and on humanitarian grounds, the court has rejected an application filed by Vora seeking to direct the media to quote sources of their information while publishing stories regarding the crime. Vora was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on November 25, 2011, for her alleged role in the murder. She was charged under provisions of the stringent MCOCA. Speaking to reporters, Special Public Prosecutor Dileep Shah said, “The special MCOCA court has rejected the application as no case of defamation could be made out. The judge observed that
no order can be passed against the media as it (media) is not a party.” The Crime Branch on December 3 had filed a chargesheet against the arrested accused, namely Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia. According to the police, the don was allegedly upset with two articles written by the 56year-old scribe which purportedly portrayed him in a bad light. By murdering Dey, he wanted to send a message to the media that those who write against him would be targeted. Well-known director-producer held in forgery case; he allegedly used fake documents to send women to foreign countries

fter the arrest of a 32-year-old Ahmedabad-based woman who was caught at the Toronto Airport, in Canada, during interrogation by the immigration department officials, the nexus between Bollywood personalities and agents who send struggling female artists to foreign countries using fake visas and documents, has been revealed. A well-known Bollywood director-producer has been arrested by the Sahar Police along with woman being sent to Canada after accepting Rs.10 lakh from her. Sources from the Sahar Police Station revealed that most girls sent to foreign countries by Partho Gosh are a part of a prostitution racket. Director-producer Partho Ghosh has sent around 18 members to Toronto (Canada) by assuring the Airport Authority that he is sending the group to perform in his upcoming movie. However, a woman who was caught by the immigration department has busted the gang. The arrested lady revealed to the Canada immigration department and the Indian officials that she was sent by Partho Gosh for being a part of one of his films, but she was shocked to know that fake docu-
Partho Ghosh, producer-director ments were made for her travel. Partho Gosh had sent this group of 18 females was sent in September 2012 when the Canadian immigration department sent a letter to their Indian counterpart and the Indian government confirmed in March 2013 that the documents carried by Yamini Mistry (a group member) were fake. The department then ordered the Sahar Police to register an FIR against four persons including two agents in the month of July. Senior Police Inspector from Sahar Police Station Ravindra Patil revealed that on the basis of the
complaint filed by the immigration department, they had registered an FIR against director Partho Ghosh for making forged documents, agent Rajubhai Darbar and Partho’s assistant Farhan Siddique. “On Friday, we arrested Partho Ghosh in this connection, while Raju Bhai and Farhan Siddique are absconding. Yamini Misty was, however, arrested two months ago. It is a big nexus between Bollywood personalities and agents who are sending these girls out of the country. We are verifying the number of girls that might have been sent by Partho”, Patil added. Sources from Sahar Police station revealed that Partho Ghosh is involved in a group which sends girls to foreign countries like the USA, UK, UAE and Canada. Director Partho Ghosh allegedly plays a vital role in the scam. Yamini, who was arrested, used to live with her family including her son in Ahmedabad. She is a divorcee and was approached by Rajubhai, an agent and was asked to pay Rs.10 lakh for going to Canada to earn good money. Accused Partho Ghosh was produced before the Andheri Court and was sent to Judicial Custody, Patil informed.

that he was Inspector Shankar Chavan from the Crime Branch and was accompanied by Income Tax officer Anil Naik to conduct a raid on his premises. Upon searching Patel’s office, they found no money, but tried to extort Rs. 2 lakh from him by offering to keep the matter quiet. They also threatened him by saying that if he didn’t pay them, they would take him to the police station and frame him in a case that would ensure that he would be behind bars for a long time. The victim then called up his friend Ketenbhai and asked him to arrange for the money. Ketanbhai immediately visited the V.P Road police station and narrated the incident to the cops. The V.P. road police then investigated the case and found that two men out of the six accused would keep a watch on Patel by standing near his office building. Shankar Chavan was the first to be caught by the police and during his interrogation he revealed the name of his accomplices. According to Rajendra Chavan, “All the six accused have been arrested on Tuesday and booked under Sections 341,342,452,385,420,170 and 34 under the Indian Penal Code. n what seems to be the battle for supremacy to control the area of Bhandup in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, a Bhandup-based gangster was killed by his rivals on Monday night. The deceased, Santosh Chavan alias Kanya (38), was shot dead by his rival Amit Bhogle and his three aides. The quartet accused is still at large, said crime branch officials, who are also on the trail to nab the accused. According to a top crime branch official, “In a bid to become an independent gangster of Bhandup area, Bhogle eliminated Kanya, who had become a known figure in Bhandup and its adjoining areas.” Kanya, who has several serious offences registered against him, had started getting into the construction activities in Bhandup. In this regard, he had terrorized the builders in the Bhandup area that most of the contracts like supplying sand, iron rods and other such materials used in the building’s construction should be only given to his men, said police. This did not go down well with Bhogle, who was also doing the same with several builders in Bhandup. From nearly one year, Kanya as well as Bhogle were looking for an opportunity to eliminate each other, said police. The incident took place between 11 pm to 11.30 pm on Monday night, when the deceased along with his aides was playing cards at Subhandar Bhavya Chawl in
Bhandup. Apart from Bhogle his aides Aditya Shirsagar alias Shirya, Kande and an unidentified person appeared to be bald are wanted, said police. Local hoodlums with an eye on Mumbai’s underworld From a year or two, Kanya was enjoying the status of being an independent gangster, as his rivals like Amit Bhogle, Mayur Shinde and Anil Pandey, all from Bhandup area who had their own small groups, were either lying low due to police’s pressure regarding the cases against them or were behind the bars. Shinde and Pandey, who were recently released on bail, had been cooling their heels inside the jail from past few years in separate cases of attempt to murder and extortion. While Bhogle, apart from Kanya, was the only local gangster to be operating swiftly without any hindrance from police. Another reason for Bhogle operating smoothly was that he had become a top informer of an officer incharge of a crime branch unit in eastern suburbs, said sources. However, Bhogle’s clout in the Bhandup area was quite less in comparison to Kanya, as the latter was a veteran as well as one time mentor of Bhogle (See Box). With the absence of Shinde and Pandey, Bhogle had grouped his gang and thought that the elimination of Kanya would automatically make him a strong independent gangster in Bhandup. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
Autorickshaw driver to gangster I
n late 90s, Santosh Chavan alias Kanya was a autorickshaw driver before becoming a local hoodlum in Bhandup. His entry into crime was like the story in Bollywood film. Kanya was usually hired by gangster Kumar Pillai’s gang member who would visit their targets in the eastern suburbs, especially in the areas of Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund area, by traveling in Kanya’s autorickshaw. Initially, Kanya wasn’t aware about his passengers being gangsters, who threaten businessmen and builders and extort money. As he become aware
about his passengers, he started boasting about his contacts with Pillai’s gang members and would often get into petty fights. As he became a local hoodlum by getting involved in petty fights and solving small property disputes he made a group of young youths who used to be with him. It was this time, when Bhogle, a young boy then, had joined Kanya and remained his aide till few years ago. In 2007, Bhogle and Pandey were arrested by slain encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar in connection with the murder of Sunil Magade.

The AAP leader said, “Both the Pawars have been running the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank to favour the rich sugar mill owners by giving them loans beyond the capacity of the bank. t was the turn of Shiv Sena yesterday to complain to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Chief Electoral Officer for Maharashtra, Nitin Gadre, about deletion of voters names from assembly constituencies held by the Shiv Sena-BJP legislators. The Sena-BJP delegation which met the CEO in Mantralaya pointed out the alarming cases of even vagabonds and homeless in Worli assembly constituency being enrolled as voters. The delegation took strong objection over the inclusion of such voters in the list who had no place to live or show any proof of residence. The delegation led by Sena MP Anil Desai and senior BJP leader Dr. Kirit Somaiya pointed out that while voters names were being deleted from the Sena-BJP held constituencies, they were being added to voters’ list in constituencies held by the ruling Congress-NCP alliance legislators. The delegation also demanded that the restriction of
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya submitting 10 voter registration application forms by Booth Level Agents (BLAs) be raised to 50 to 100 forms per agents. They also demanded that the number of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) by the EC should be raised so that voter registration is increased. The Sena-BJP delegation pointed out that the insistence of election officers from migrated voters for receipt of cancellations for their earlier constituencies for re-enrollment in new constituencies was causing undue inconvenience to such voters. Gadre assured the delegation to look into their grievances related to the EC and forward the rest related to State Election Commission. prashant.hamine@afternoondc.in

However after a few months ago, Shah started pressurising the girl to marry him. Irate over her refusal, Shah then decided to take revenge and created a fake profile of the girl on the social networking site. “The accused collected details (including the cell phone number) of the girl from her original profile and uploaded morphed versions (vulgar and nude pictures) adding vulgar details on the fake profile,” revealed Senior Police Inspector, Shantaram Valvi.
Chintan Mahendra Shah being led away by Senior PI Shantaram Valvi of the Bhayandar police station. The girl, who started getting phone calls based on the fake profile, registered a complaint with the Thane (Rural) SP, Anil Kumbhare, who immediately directed the Cyber Crime Cell to investigate the matter. ‘Ahimsa is a science’ A
HIMSA is a science. If the function of himsa is to devour all it comes across, the function of ahimsa is to rush into the mouth of himsa. In an atmosphere of ahimsa one has no scope to put his ahimsa to the test. It can be tested only in the face of himsa. Violence can only be effectively met by nonviolence. This is an old, established truth...that the weapon of violence, even if it was the atom bomb, became useless when matched against nonviolence. That very few understand how to wield this mighty weapon is true. It requires a lot of understanding and strength of mind. It is unlike what is needed in military schools and colleges. The difficulty one experiences in meeting himsa with ahimsa arises from weakness of mind. ‘Hate the sin and not the sinner’ is a precept which, though easy enough to understand, is rarely practised, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world. This ahimsa is the basis of the search for truth. I am realizing every day that the search is vain unless it is founded on ahimsa as the basis. It is quite

Bitter ‘Prasad’ for Lalu Yadav in fodder scam SOME fodder for thought for corrupt politicians as Lalu Yadav has finally been convicted in a landmark judgement in the fodder scam and put behind bars by a CBI court after 17 yrs of committing the crime. The conviction bars him from standing for future elections and also nullifies his Lok Sabha seat which should send shivers down the spine of other corrupt politicians facing various corruption charges in others courts of our country. Most politicians are corrupt in our country and the snail’s pace at which such cases are decided by our courts encourage politicians to such corrupt means as they know the punishment dwarfs in front of the rewards they reap and most get arrested by the time their political career is over. The court judgment is meaningless if the money lost by such corrupt means is not recovered. The courts should attach all assets of such corrupt politicians including the ‘benami’ one’s and see to it that every rupee is recovered
Rahul: political greenhorn RAHUL GANDHI’S butting in on Maken’s press conference for just four minutes to trash Manmohan Singh’s cabinet approved Ordinance and to call it “nonsense” reminds us of his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s similar brash action in late sixties. She sacked the then Finance minister a very senior and respectable Morarji Desai before announcing the nationalization of banks. This was to steal the thunder and to take the credit. While the grandma was vile, the grandson was daft. Even if we believe that he did not know about the Ordinance on the President’s table-–which is not likely--
apart from capital punishment so that it sends a stong message to politicians wanting to commit similar scams in future. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
THE verdict of the CBI court declaring Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty in the fodder scam case along with 44 others would be one of the few instances when politicians have been convicted for a scam. And, after Rahul Gandhi’s dramatic opposition to the government’s ordinance seeking to circumvent a Supreme Court ruling on immediate disqualification of convicted MPs and MLAs, Lalu will be the first big casualty of the SC ruling. This might seem to vindicate the notion that such a law is necessary to combat criminalistion of politics. But justice has been done after 17 years which should have been speeded up to complete in next two years in the fast track court where the public servant is ber of the first (Gandhi) family can have is very clearly seen in just a few remarks on the government’s Ordinance regarding dismissal of convicted Members of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi remarked that the Ordinance was “nonsense and the same should be torn and thrown out”. Till now no one has used such harsh words that too on his own government. The power of the first family is such that Ajay Maken, the chief of Congress Media Centre, who started off with very good words on the Ordinance changed his stance after Rahul gave his impression on it. Maken said “Rahulji’s opinion is the opinion and the line of Congress ... Now the Congress Party is opposed to the Ordinance”. This clearly confirms where the power of the government lies. — Sharad Kumar, Mumbai
NOVICE: Rahul Gandhi could have been more polite and graceful while opposing the Cabinet approved Ordinance against the SC order on criminals in politics. and that he was worried that the President may sign it before the return of the Prime Minister, he had other means to stop the Ordinance from being promulgated. He could have asked P. Chidambaram (the PM’s stand-in) to plead with the President to go easy on the Ordinance till the PM returns and then join in on the discussion on withdrawing or otherwise of the ordinance. He has shown the even now, in politics, he is still a political greenhorn. — Dr Mookhi Amir Ali, Santacruz
DYNASTY rule is taking a toll on Indian politics. The incident of Rahul Gandhi coming out in the way he did on the Ordinance, by barging into a press conference of Ajay Makkan, is atrocious and OF throws the right thinking LETTER THE DAY citizens of this country in utter confusion. If the government thought that the Supreme Court’s judgment barring participation of convicted members in the House, they could have done it with sufficient ‘in house’ deliberations instead of approving such an Ordinance in haste by the Cabinet. The fact that it did not happen so is more than indicated by Rahul Gandhi’s opposition and the way he has expressed it, particularly in the absence of the prime minister. Further, the matter should not have been expressed in the manner he did. Does the vice president of this national party and the perspective PM candidate say to mean that the cabinet ministers are so unworthy that they deal important matters in nonsensical manner.? — Jayanthy S. COMMENDABLE JUDGEMENT: Finally, Lalu Prasad Yadav has been convicted for his crime. This will serve as a warning to other politicians who think they are immune to the law of the land. involved. The problem however remains even such delayed justice is linked to ever shifting political contexts. If one of the reasons for bringing in the ordinance was summarised to protect Lalu, now it is expected that the Union CabiGandhi deserves kudos for opposing the ordinance shielding the convicted MPs and MLAs. Now the nationals also expect obviously that all the present and past culprits of Coalgate, Bofors, 2G spectrum, CWG, Adarsh housing society, fodder and all such other anti-people and therefore, anti-national scams worth trillions of rupees and US dollars in all, with their black money deposited with all the foreign banks should be punished severely and immediately. And all that black money lying in foreign banks should be brought back to India immediately for the uplift of our nation and crores of aam aadmi. People also have a burning desire that there should be no amendment in the RTI Act, proposed to keep all the politicians and a ‘special’ class of babus out of the ambit of the RTI Act, including the Prime Minster. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
BMC’s apathetic attitude THE collapsed BMC owned building at Mazgaon raises so many questions of this corporation’s attitude towards dilapidated buildings in distress which eventually meet their fate, while the proposal files lie in the BMC office untouched! It is well known to this city that BMC keep its ‘idle process’ to any application unless it’s warm!. A recent request to BMC for trimming or permission to trim few branches of trees that dangerously lean over the balcony of some flats in a society of which this writer is the secretary, has got a ridiculous reply by post, after 1 month! BMC asks for true photographs of the branches and necessary documents in support. LALU Prasad Yadav was at last, after a period of 17 years, convicted on Monday. Being a shrewd politician he had the knack to benefit from the political system by playing his cards well over many long years. The SC Order disqualifying MPs and MLAs had come about recently and withstood the efforts of the Congress to quash by means of an Ordinance which did not take off. Hence, he could not walk out this time around. Shri Lalu Yadav as a Railway Minister was very partial and prejudiced towards Mumbai and deprived Mumbai from developmental projects. As a CM he ruined Bihar in every possible aspect, in particular, the law and order situation. His conviction
FINALLY, the court has convicted the accused in the fodder scam case. Better late than never though it should have been sooner. The conviction should not only result in a jail term but also recovery of the scam money with interest by attaching the assets of the accused. If this is not done, then the accused will spend their time happily in jail and knowing how shameless they are, they will not mind doing it and then after their release they will make hay with the loot. Hence the looted money should be recovered even if it means that the accused have to give up all their assets. This and only this will put the fear of the law in the hearts of such looters.
co-pilot, which is indeed very sad. The weather was not conducive and the route through which the chopper was flying on its course was found to be certainly dangerous as it was to cross a hill and that too through a maze of high voltage transmission lines. I wonder whether the pilot went off course and came on this route and hence crashed, killing everyone on board. In fact the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) has been found which would throw some light on the cause of this crash and which may as well reveal if the flying machine met with any technical snag like lifting the chopper to a higher level to avoid crashin on the with the hill. NOTA: ‘MOTA’ BENEFIT FOR POLLS COMPLIMENTS to the honourable Supreme Court for its landmark verdict directing the Election Commission to provide for ‘None of the above’ (NOTA) option in electronic voting machines for the ensuing polls. Tainted candidates may now not be put up by political parties fearing outright rejection by people, and thus we may have a cleaner bunch of people ruling us. Rejecting a candidate is a voter’s right, and we shall see NOTA votes transform outcome of elections. I would also like to see elections being cancelled in a constituency if ‘NOTA’ votes are more than that of candidates. The Supreme Court should take note of this matter and oblige. — Altaf H Ladiwala, Bandra

WANT TO STUDY ACCOUNTANCY
I have completed my BCom from Mumbai University through correspondence and have been working as a Back Office Assistant in a company for the past 23 months. I want to climb higher in the hierarchy and study Accountancy further. Which course (ICWA, MCom, MBA) should I opt for? Can you provide a list of colleges and information about the relevant exams? —Ashish Alav
To climb higher in the hierarchy you require educational qualification as well as work experience in your related field. If you are planning to work in the costing aspects of the financial arena, opt for the ICWA course. However, remember that you need to complete your practical training where you may have to quit your job. The 2-year M.Com (Accountancy) course can be pursued along with your job. You can study MBA (Finance) as a 2year full time course, after quitting your job, or via a correspondence, or even as a 3-year part time course along with your job. Take into account your job responsibilities, course syllabi, family support, health, financial resources as well as your inclinations to make the final decision.
I have a Diloma in Electrical Engineering. Is it possible to pursue an MBA after this? Also, what are the other possible courses that I can pursue? —Purab
Most of the B-Schools in India offer MBAs to graduates only. However, a few B-Schools do offer a management program to Diploma holders from recognized institutes with 5-8 years of work experience through the distance mode. There is an array of courses to choose from like journalism, computers, teaching, hotel management, event management, advertising and more.
I am studying in the F.Y.B.Com. Can I pursue a C.A with my graduation? What can I do next? —Vishal Sharma CA studies can be simultaneously done along with your graduation. You need to register yourself with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. For more and detailed information check www.icai.org. The Scope of Marketing Rural India Continued from pg 13 « Agriculture is no longer a poor man’s profession. Factors like globalisation and liberalisation have also stimulated the pace of transformation, often to composite levels. Even in the present context, the agricultural sector hires more than 65 per cent of the national workforce and lends a handsome 23 per cent to the GDP. SCOPE The new generation is no longer shying away from agriculture as a career. Many government initiatives like MNREGS and minimum support prices for various agriculture products have also given rural people a healthy income. There is no scarcity of job opportunities for the urban youth as well. In sectors like FMCG, automobile, retail, research and advertising, there are numerous prospects which are available at various levels in major companies having their operations in the rural sector. Rural BPOs are one of the emerging sectors for rural masses. These ITEs (IT enabled services) are setting up their bases in the hinterlands as the cost of setting up a BPO unit is somewhat lower in these areas. Another reason that has made these companies set up their establishments there is the easy accessibility of workforce in villages. The incursion of national and local brands into rural areas provides employment opportunities to the masses there. To exist in these markets, companies are coming up with money-spinning business models and are also appealing to the local population, as people in rural areas buy things based on the recommendation of others or those they are comfortable with. The unappreciated rural story is now fast catching up and has opened the floodgates of prospects for those interested in making careers in this field. SKILLS An essential tool to get in touch with the rural audience is through effective communication. The rural audience has experienced enough to understand the communication developed for the urban markets, particularly with reference to FMCG products. Television has been the most important effective communication system for the rural masses and, as a result, companies should make themselves known through their advertisements. There is a need to mark the brand according to regional differences. The segregation may not necessarily be in terms of product content. It may also be in provisions of packaging, communication or association with the brand. The brand has to be made significant by understanding
local requirements. Even presenting the same product in different regions with different brand names could be assumed as a strategy. VARIOUS OFFERINGS The Indian government in the past few years has begun concentrating on providing vocational education to rural men and women. These skill development curricula help them to get employment and many of them, with the help and financial support of the government, start their own small businesses. Many private companies are also training these masses in various fields and later give them jobs in their own organisations. This is helping people in getting employment in their own localities and companies are also gaining as they get this workforce at a very reasonable price. Even the farming community has been endued by many technological inventions, and many private companies have started using mobiles as their means of business. Tourism is another area that has seen an enormous growth in the past few years. The growth of the Indian middle class has increased the inwards and outward movements of tourists. Many people are coming from big metros to experience the rural lifestyle and this has given the rural masses an opportunity to connect with them in various economic activities that are being generated by tourism spots. EDUCATION AND TRAINING The growing requirement of skilled professionals in these markets has led to the outgrowth of rural marketing as a subject and now it is taught in almost all major management colleges in the country. Degree and diploma courses in rural management are offered by numerous management institutes in the country. The most accepted among them are
MBA in Rural Management, Master of Rural Management (MRM), Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Rural Development Management, and Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Marketing. Admission into these courses is through the All-India entrance tests followed by group discussions and a personal interview. The least qualification to appear in these tests is a graduation or an equivalent degree from any recognised institute. REMUNERATION A fresher passing out from any rural management institute can expect somewhere around Rs.8000 to Rs.15,000 salary per month. With ample experience, one can expect higher pay packages. Many agencies, run by big corporate houses, offer attractive packages, including extra allowances like house rent and medical expenses. Independent rural managers, running their own NGOs, draw rich dividends in terms of money, popularity, and prestige. Prominent institutes offering such courses are: Era Business School Plot No. HAF-1, Sector - 9, Dwarka New Delhi – 110077 Tel. 011- 46451000 INSTITUTE OF RURAL MANAGEMENT (IRM) IIRM Campus, Tagore Marg, Mansarovar Jaipur-302020, Rajasthan Phone: 0141-2396648 XAVIER INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT Xavier Square Bhubaneswar - 751 013 Phone: 0674-3012345

“EDUCATION IS THE BEDROCK MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2013
Fashion Designer Aditi Holani, Creative - Managing Director, Curator at Shoulder Lab shares her experience of studying in fashion institutes in India and abroad
I
did my under graduation from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, and followed that up with a Post Graduate Diploma in Fashion Studies from London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (CSM). Monosyllabic-ally speaking my universities were ‘Art-sy’. NIFT is painted in primary colors: red, blue and yellow and very well spread, space wise. It was a stomping ground of sorts for four years! Central Saint Martins has many campuses and now has been rebuilt/converted into one huge campus at Kings Cross. I was stationed at Charring Cross. Charring Cross, till date, is considered as a place of historical significance, given the kind of alumni it has produced. Our building was like any other London building, very Victorian and British, old style vintage inspired. The energy and visual surroundings can spark up any space! The cafe, although very small, had a beautiful ambience, graphic walls, and imaginative sketches drawn at every little corner. It gave me my most precious moments and indescribable joy. Like everyone, I was very nervous on my first day. But once the orientation programme started, it was a lot of fun. The whole process of getting to know different kinds of people was an enriching experience. It was a new world for all of us. Both the universities had a good mix of people from all cultures/caste. Interacting with them was a very big learning curve. Talking of some embarrassing moments...Yes, I was ragged! It was very silly though! Our seniors were referred/addressed as ma’am/sir, they still are! One of these guys once asked me about my favourite soft drink! ‘Thumbs up’ came my reply. They called for it from the canteen. I was like, ‘No no, thank you, very kind of you, I don’t want it.’ They spilled it on the table and asked me to lick it! In retrospect, I still laugh about it! My professors are the ones who have shaped me into who I am today. They played a very big role in my entire life. Our professors at NIFT and CSM were very supportive and guided us through the entire course. It is hard to describe their contribution to our lives. Let’s put it, ‘Huge Contribution, something that cannot be
repaid’. They made work seem like fun. Since it’s a creative grassland, we had subjects like pattern making, draping, garment construction etc. something outside of an academic course per se. Although we had to put <<Aditi Holani in long hours, one never realised it. It was like a home outside of home. We (a couple of friends and me) drove our way to NIFT, a 20 to 30 minute distance every day. Ranter-banter was our breakfast! In London, Tubes used to be the mode of transport. Walking long stretches, absorbing the street culture, interacting with random people on the train, good music and great weather is how I would describe a normal day out there. These years were a lot of fun, craziness and a lot of learning. I made friends for a lifetime. There were a lot of creative conversations, sharing of ideas, exchanging dialogues etc. Overall, it was a thrilling experience.
« ALUMNI SPEAK
My friends were a bunch of creative and talented people. We used to go to these really funky joints near our university. Street food was our favorite. It helped in keeping our pockets intact! Friends are an important part of the transformation that takes place within us during our education years. Most of them are my best friends now and we catch up once a week. Although none of us are similar, but we appreciate and respect each others’ design sensibilities and personality types! While at NIFT I stayed at home and used to commute every day. In London, I had put up in the students’ residence halls. It was an enriching experience where I met people outside of my department; people who were in the creative industry but in different courses...some of whom included product designers, communications students, graphics designers etc. The interesting part was that I was the only Indian! It was the cultural diversity that influenced me, more than I can put in words. We shared our home and country experiences, food types and lifestyles. It was great knowing and understanding different people, their lifestyles and cultures. Studying with students from various countries broadens your horizon. Education has helped me beyond words. It has shaped me into the person I am. It enhances and broadens one’s outlook towards a lot of things, not limited to design. I would like to thank my professors and my fellow classmates for all their contribution, indescribable bond, joy and warmth that has filled my heart and will be cherished forever. With fashion taking pride of place in society today, there is tremendous scope for those opting for the profession to grow and make a career. We have some of the best institutes in India teaching the craft with various specialisations. People too are becoming more fashion conscious today and therefore there is tremendous scope to grow and progress in this career. For all the young people who want to make a mark, go out there and experience the joy of it all. Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken. Learn. Contribute. Grow. (As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira)

We might have a million things to do, and a hundred
wants to satisfy, but all a pet wants is a belly rub and a pat which makes its day and that is nothing compared to what they give us in return. The death of a pet is an unbearable pain and leaves a scar that is beyond healing. Pets form an irrevocable bond with their owner which isn’t easy to break or get over and their passing away is quite like losing a family member. Pets come as a blessing and leave us with so many memories to look back at and cherish. Having a pet is a wonderful delight, and I believe that every person needs to experience the joy of a furry little friend.

felt on top of the world as you stepped out of the elevator on the 37th floor of the Palladium Hotel and YOU walked into Li Bai, the lounge bar and Mekong, the Asian specialty restaurant. Happy hosts Atul and Gayatri Ruia warmly welcomed the merry mix of guests like Namrata Baruah Shroff, Tanaz Doshi, Chhaya Momaya, Chetan Bhagat, Gayatri Oberoi, Madhoo Shah, Nishka Lulla, Luke Kenny, Schauna and Bikram Saluja who all admired the panoramic view.
Fresh and new buzz was THE on at the re-
launch of Lagerbay on Waterfield Road in Bandra. The look was fresh and new and your saw that a second bar was added to the cheerful place. Pink was the dress code of the night as you were encouraged to raise our pinkies with pride to support women fighting breast cancer and to raise awareness to the Pinkie Pride campaign. Spotted in the packed place were the likes of Hard Kaur, Evelyn Sharma, Tanvi Singla, Amrita Prakash and Eijaz Khan.

colourful and cheerful was Vidyut Jamwal as Citizen launched its latest Promaster collection – the Eco-Drive Satellite Wave-Air and Altichron at Palladium Hotel. Master of ceremonies Siddharth Kannan took you on this revolutionary leap in the history of the watchmaking industry with the Bollywood action hero and Katsusuke Tokura, MD, Citizen Watches (India). And besides the watch what caught your eye was Vidyut’s ensemble by Troy Costa.

yet classic, irreverent yet wearable was what you witnessed when you soaked in EDGY Kresha Bajaj’s creations as she presented her fashion-
forward Koëcsh.com. Black was the colour of the night as guests traipsed across the black carpet and into a crackling party at Otto Infinito. Bird cages with funky footwear and live mannequins caught your eye as did Alesia Raut and Dipti Gujral styled by Priya Kapur. And the talk was that you should dress to express, not to impress.
High style and quirky, FUNKY crazy and colourful
clothes were on view at Pocoloco at the launch of 25-Oh-Oh!, a high-street fashion label from Aaishwarya Bhandarkar. Guests sipped sangria as they feasted their eyes on the autumn/winter collection of floral and geometric designs on chiffon and crepe in various loud shades to exaggerate the fall of the dresses. And they were pleasantly surprised to note that no creation was priced higher than the labelscreaming amount of Rs. 2500.

TODAY’S BEST VIEWING
It is just another day at the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), a few astronauts were repairing a satellite until, out of nowhere, a series of asteroids came crashing into the shuttle, destroying it. These asteroids also decimated New York soon thereafter. Then, NASA discovered that there is an asteroid roughly the size of Texas heading towards the Earth, and when it does hit the Earth, the planet itself and all of its inhabitants will be obliterated, worse, the asteroid will hit the Earth in 18 days. Unfortunately, NASA’s plans to destroy the asteroid are irrelevant. That is when the U.S. military decides to use a nuclear warhead to blow the asteroid to pieces. Then, scientists decide to blow the asteroid with the warhead inside the asteroid itself. The only man to do it, is an oil driller named Harry Stamper and his group of misfit drillers and geologists. As he and his drill team prepare for space excavation, the asteroid is still heading towards the Earth. When... HBO, 9 p.m.

IN BRIEF Asian Rugby Sevens round three in Mumbai on October 12
MUMBAI: India are pooled with Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan in the lowest ranked Group E in the third and final leg of the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens series for men, to be held at the Bombay Gymkhana here on October 12 and 13. After finishing 14th out of 16 competing teams last year in the three-leg series with 3 points, India are aiming to end up higher, said Rugby India president Pramod Khanna at the draw of the 16-team third leg. Khanna's optimism stemmed from the fact that Indian men had started this season well and defeated higher ranked UAE recently in Thailand. "We expect a much better performance from India," he said. Japan are leading the table with 24 points in the series and were followed by last year's champions Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and South Korea.
Siddhanth Lohia triumphs
MUMBAI: With a score of eight out of possible nine points, Siddhanth Lohia of Dhirubai Ambani bagged silver in the Bombay Chess Association organised Maharashtra U-9 State Chess Championships 2013 concluded on Monday at Bandra. He created a flutter by beating National Under-7 champion, Aditya Mittal of Vibgyor School. Seven year old Siddhanth has plenty of achievements under his belt, and is the former under seven state champion, Asian Schools Silver medallist and also won top honours in the recently held under 11 state championships at Nagpur by beating seven international rated chess players. Siddhanth is currently preparing for the ultimate World Youth Chess Championships in December in UAE.
Zol’s fine century goes in vain as India colts lose by 10 runs
VISAKHAPATNAM: Skipper Vijay Zol struck yet another century in colts cricket but that wasn't enough as India U-19 lot to their South African counterparts by 10 runs in an inconsequential penultimate round robin league match of the Quadrangular U-19 tournament here. Both India and South Africa are on 16 points from five matches and South Africa's win today helped them shut the door on Australia with a match to go. Put into bat, South Africa posted 257 for six with Clyde Fortuin scoring a patient 65 off 94 balls with eight boundaries.
Aaron D’Costa strikes two in St. Joseph’s victory
MUMBAI: Aaron D’Costa’s twin strikes helped St. Joseph’s ‘B’, Mira Road pull off a hardfought 2-1 win against St. Michael’s ‘A’, Mahim, in a first round match of the 26th Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) annual Inter-Parish Rink Football Tournament, played under floodlights at the WCG tennis courts. Keegan Dias netted the lone goal for the losing side. Earlier, St. Francis Xavier ‘A’, Vile Parle got the better of St. Blaise ‘B’, Andheri by an identical 2-1 margin. Nicano Misquitta and Calvin K were on target for the Vile Parle Parish, while St. Blaise reduced the deficit through Deepal Shah. In another first round encounter, Sanket Bhagat struck both the goals as St. Paul’s ‘B’, Dadar overcame Holy Family ‘A’, Andheri by a narrow 2-1 margin. Sagar Khanvilkar scored the lone goal for the Andheri side.

EW DELHI: With virtually one semifinal spot up for grabs in Group A, IPL champions Mumbai Indians will fancy their chances when they take on the bottom-placed Perth Scorchers in a do-or-die battle in their final round-robin match of the Champions League Twenty20 here today. Mumbai Indians are currently at the third position with six points in the points table, while Otago Volts are placed second with 10 points with two victories under their belt and an abandoned game from three ties. Sitting at the top of Group A table with 12 points, are Rajasthan Royals, who have already made the last four stage. The Mumbai side will have to play out of their skins tomorrow to not just earn full marks to make it 10 and come at par with Otago Volts but also finish with a good run-rate, so that if the New Zealand outfit lose their next tie there is a chance for the Indian Sachin Tendulkar's stumps are uprooted by Sohail Tanvir, in the Lions v Mumbai franchise to make the cut on the Indians, Group A match during the Champions League. basis of a better run average. There is no doubt that a strong Mumbai side would do everything in their power to post a comprehensive victory against the Scorchers, if Otago lose their last league tie against Rajasthan Royals to be held in Jaipur tonight. Even though the star-studded Mumbai outfit did not have an ideal start to the tournament as they suffered a defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in the opening match before the second tie was washed out, they came back strongly to stamp their authority against the Lions. Having restricted the Lions to a meagre 140 for 5, Mumbai reached the modest target with nine balls to spare and they would look for nothing less than a repeat of that performance where both their batsmen and bowlers fired in unison. The bowlers, despite the absence of their match-winning pacer Lasith Malinga, did well with Mitchell Johnson, Harbhajn Singh and Pragyan Ojha successfully putting breaks to the opponents' scoring besides chipping in with important wickets.

In his book, Underneath The Southern Cross, Hussey has said that Team owner N Srinivasan had handed the control of the team to Gurunath. "Our owner was Indian Cements, headed by Mr Srinivasan," Hussey wrote in his book. "As he was also on the board of the BCCI, he gave control of the team to his son-in-law Mr Gurunath. He ran the team along with Kepler Wessels, who was coach." Former team principal of Chennai Super Kings, Gurunath was chargesheeted along with 21 others for gambling, cheating and criminal conspiracy, in the spot-fixing case of the Indian Pre-
mier League. Meiyappan was accused of revealing confidential information of his team and using the same for betting.
Focus on Sehwag, Gambhir as India A take on West Indies A SA tour will set the good form, failing to take five wickets in a Test innings since October 2010, and his fitness and endurance has been a concern too. After the 2011 World Cup, he played just seven Tests, breaking down in England. This match would be quite testing for Sehwag and Gambhir, who have had a poor run in the NKP Challenger Trophy as well. With the kind of experience, they would be eager to get big scores under their belt and make it difficult for the national selectors to ignore them for the upcoming West Indies series.

Sports Ministry announces HRD scheme in Sports
NEW DELHI: With the aim of developing human resources for the overall development of sports in the country, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh announced a revised scheme called 'Human Resources Development in Sports'. The scheme intends to award fellowships and scholarships, besides providing financial grants to a number of projects in order to develop one of the top 10 sporting nations in the country. "The Government intends to give focus on developing human resources in sports sciences and sports medicine for the overall development of sports and games in the country," said Jitendra Singh.
However, Srinivasan and India Cements distanced themselves from Gurunath with the BCCI president calling him just a
"cricket enthusiast". Gurunath was arrested by Mumbai Police in May and named in betting chargesheet last month. The Supreme Court of India is hearing a matter related to Gurunath. Prior to his arrest, the senior CSK official was involved in the functioning of the Chennai team as he could be spoted in the team dugout, at auction tables. Gurunath also represented himself as the team principal on a verified Twitter account. After the scandal broke out, a two-member probe panel was constituted by the BCCI and it eventually cleared the Super Kings of any wrongdoing, but Cricket Association of Bihar moved court and procured a stay order. The Supreme Court had said yesterday that Srinivasan, who was reelected as BCCI President in the AGM on Sunday, will not participate in matters relating to IPL and the spot fixing issue. The next hearing is scheduled on October 7.
Virender Sehwag

HIMOGA: The spotlight would firmly be on out of favour veterans like Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir when India A seek revenge for the opening match humiliation against the West Indies A in their second unofficial Test starting here today. Led by Cheteshwar Pujara, India A were beaten by a massive 162 runs in the opening match in Mysore. It will be interesting to see how Pujara handles the team filled with heavyweights such as Sehwag, Gambhir and pacer Zaheer Khan, who have been out of the national team for different reasons. Sehwag has not scored a century in 30 Test innings while Gambhir's dry run with the bat has seen him without a century in 40 innings since January 2010. Zaheer too has not been in
Clarke ruled out of India tour, replaced by Callum Ferguson MELBOURNE: Australia were dealt a massive blow ahead of their upcoming tour of India as skipper Michael Clarke was ruled out of the limited-overs series due to a nagging back injury, replaced by Callum Ferguson in the squad. "The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel today advises that South Australia's Callum Ferguson will replace the injured Michael Clarke on Australia's VB Tour of India," Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Will not disclose Sehwag’s batting position: Pujara
SHIMOGA: India A captain Cheteshwar Pujara kept his cards close to his chest and refused to divulge whether veteran Virender Sehwag will open or bat in the middle order when his side locks horns with the West Indies A in the second unofficial Test starting here today. "I will not disclose it (if Sehwag is going to play in the middle order)," he told reporters when asked if Sehwag will bat in the middle order at prematch press conference. "You will come to know tomorrow," India A Coach Lalchand Rajput interjected. On Sehwag's injury, Pujara said he looks okay and a final call will be taken later. Asked whether Sehwag
will go for a scan, the Indian captain said the team needs to speak to the physio about it. On match strategy, Pujara said there might be a few changes. Commenting on the pitch, Pujara said it looks a good and should help fast bowlers. "The outfield is very nice too," he added. Asked whether he would play three fast bowlers, Pujara said he would play them if there is dampness in the wicket due to rains. "We will take a call tomorrow morning. See how the wicket looks in the morning. There might be a bit of rain. It looks cloudy," he said. On the opening options in the squad, Pujara said the team has an option in the form of young batsman from Kerala.
standards for this Indian team: Kohli
NEW DELHI: Amid the cloud of uncertainty that hovers over India's tour of South Africa, batting mainstay Virat Kohli said the upcoming rubber is important as it will "set the standards for this young" national cricket team. BCCI and Cricket South Africa have been at loggerheads since the latter appointed Haroon Lorgat as its CEO. Lorgat's differences with BCCI were well known since the time the South African was the CEO of ICC when he locked horns with Indian board president Srinivasan on a number of issues, including the use of controversial Decision Review System. "South Africa tour is something we are looking forward to. The tour will set the standards of this team, we have got a young team. We are hoping to get a few games there, I can't say more than that," Kohli said. Though a consensus is still awaited on the much-awaited tour, an optimistic Kohli said the team "should be well prepared".
