Aspiring scientists impress at Annual Ward Exhibition in Andheri school

By Yatin Ingle

H

undreds of students visited the Annual Ward Exhibition of the K/P East Ward at Dominic Savio High School, Andheri, which began yesterday. The exhibition has more than 100 schools and junior colleges, whose students have set a large number of projects on various science related themes. The exhibition, which had Science as the theme consisted of sub-themes of agriculture, energy, health, environment and resources. The exhibition saw students bringing out simple, innovative and scientific ways to utilise technology to its maximum potential. The participating students were accompanied by the science teachers and lab assistants of their respective schools. While most projects were handmade and used basic science, they were still able to ‘bowl over’ the visitors who listened patiently to the

expert organisations from across the city. Pratina Sawant, a student from Divine Child High School, says “This school has given us a well managed and spaced classroom to present our projects. We are ready to face all the competitors and still

While the traditional ‘Beating Retreat’ ceremony of the Indian Navy will be held on Wednesday at the Gateway of India, the FOC-in-C, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha on Tuesday gave an insight into the Navy’s operations in the year gone by

“W

e are much safer today than we were five years ago”, said Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command as he spoke of the Indian Navy at a press conference on board INS Viraat on the eve of Navy Week 2013. Vice Admiral Sinha stated that the deployment of Indian naval ships in the Gulf of Aden since October 2008 for anti-piracy patrol has been quite successful so far. He also threw light on the Navy’s efforts to secure the nation’s coastline by roping in the fishing community which he said are the “eyes and ears” of the Navy. The FOC-in-C of theWestern Command congratulated the Navy on the commissioning of its second aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya in Russia.

INS Viraat on the eve of Navy Week 2013. The ship has set sail for India and will be escorted the Western fleet. To the heavy bombardment of questions about the tragic accident of INS Sindhurakshak at the Mumbai dockyard in August this year, Sinha said, “For us, the priority was recovery of bodies. We have recovered and identified the remains of 11 bodies out of the 14 lives lost on board the submarine”. Diving is still on for the three other bodies, although “we fear that it is now very difficult to trace their remains”, he said. The families of the bravehearts were compensated in a week and all the other formalities regarding the deceased were completed within 90 days of the accident, he added. It took some time because the temperature of water around the vessel was very high for a long time and hence divers couldn’t enter. When asked about the delay and lack of communication from the

industrial organisations. According to BARC, this exhibition is presenting the design of the largest nuclear desalination plant in the world based on hybrid technology. They believe that nuclear power will play an important role in sustainable supply of energy.

Navy’s side regarding rescue operations, he said, “Renowned international salvage companies have been approached by the Navy long ago and three of them have been shortlisted. The bidding is in progress. It took some time for people from these companies to assess the ship and hence the slight delay. However, salvage operations will begin as soon as the final contract is signed with one of these companies, which will be very soon”. Speaking of safety measure taken in Mumbai post the 26/11 terror attacks, Sinha said that the navy has had as many as 22 interactive sessions with the local fishermen in Maharashtra, and similarly in Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa. To aid security, the government of Maharashtra has issued biometric cards to 1,11,797 fishermen so far. Colour coding for boats is also in process, he said.

runa Shanbaug, a former nurse of BMC-run KEM hospital who has been admitted there in a vegetative state for the last four decades, after she was sexually assaulted by a hospital sweeper in 1973 and had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of this hospital since she was diagnosed with pneumonia in mid November this year, will probably be shifted back to her ward, which has been her home for the last 40 years, in a few days. A doctor on condition of anonymity said, “The need for her to be in the ICU is over. She is stable. She might soon be shifted back to the ward.” If sources are to be believed, it is being said that her ward is also being renovated. While doctors say that there is no specific reason for this renovation and that it is routine practice, a hospital

staffer said, “This is for Aruna, our oldest staff member.” After the brutal sexual assault, Shanbaug has been under the care of the hospital and the staff at the hospital consider her as a part of their family. So much is their attachment to Shanbaug that when author Pinki Virani had filed a petition seeking mercy killing for Shanbaug, the hospital’s staff had strictly opposed it. In March 2011, much to the delight of the hospital staff, the Supreme Court rejected Virani’s petition.

(MMOPL) for the first time gave a sneak preview of its swanky modern Metro Rail stations on the route. Besides the gleaming Metro Rail coaches, the posh looking modern stations on the VAG corridor rival those at Delhi and Kolkata. The most beautiful of them – the Verosva station – has an expansive concourse replete with latest modern gadgetry. Each of the Metro station has a lift, escalator for the senior citizens to access platform level, easy-to-understand sings that ask the commuters to desist from smoking, bringing dogs, spitting, carrying inflammable goods etc. A close watch on the station and platform premises will be kept through CCTV cameras. Commuters passing through ticketing counters will have a novel experience. Instead of the usual train indicators on suburban rail network, commuters will experience train destination display with LCD screens fitted on the platforms.

Crime Branch rescues child labourers and prostitutes By A Staff Reporter

M

umbai’s crime branch on Tuesday arrested seven bakery and hotel owners from Dharavi area in Central Mumbai for illegally employing children. Sleuths from the Social Service Branch (SSB) of the crime branch rescued around 10 children who were forcibly made to work in the premises of the hotel and bakery. The raid was conducted at

around 12 pm on Tuesday, ACP (SSB) Firoz Patel informed. Another such raid was conducted by the SSB sleuths at Khar in which a 22-year-old female was rescued from prostitution. In this regard, police arrested the lady pimp who operated the prostitution racket. The accused is identified as Vijaya Sutari, who police believe is involved in several such prostitution rackets in the city. Police suspect

that Sutari supplies the girls to different areas across the city. Meanwhile, the accused arrested in the child labour case has been handed over to Shahu Nagar police station whereas the accused arrested in the prostitution racket has been handed over to the Khar police station. All the accused in the cases have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act [PITA].

hough the Mumbai University (MU) has stepped ahead with some new initiatives for research programs and centers, it had ignored the centers and cells already established by it over the years. After setting up a counseling cell for students in its Kalina Campus, not a single penny has been spent on students or on recruitment of staffers. The expenditure records show that only Rs.1,781 has been spent on telephone bills, though budgetary funds have increased from Rs.6,93,000 to Rs.13,57,600. The counseling cell was started during the term of former Vice-Chancellor Dr Vijay Khole in the year 2007-2008, with an aim to help students tackle stress, tensions and personal and career problems. As per rules, the varsity has to recruit staff to counsel students as well as initiate seminars and guidance lectures for them. Staff counseling also has to be conducted by the same counseling cell. Further, individual counseling cells in colleges have to be supervised and guided by the varsity’s counseling cell. The ADC spoke to Sanjay Viral, senate, MU, who said, “The varsity has just been increasing the estimates but for what? It has not conducted a single counseling lecture or seminar for students. Those students who have been suffering from mental pressures and problems, where can they find the counseling cell in the varsity? No information or notice about this cell has been put up on the campus.” Recently, after a spate of murders and rapes in the city, students have been feeling traumatized, but the counseling cells have not initiated a single lecture, seminar to help cope with the same. The ADC also spoke to Dr Nareshchandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, who said “I will be personally looking into this issue as soon as possible.”

hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday assured the delegation of BJP leaders led by MLC and Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar of government assistance, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of the fire that had engulfed Sidhartha Nagar Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building at Vikhroli Parksite area. The fire sparked ostensibly due to short-circuit on November 11 had left 4 people dead, 14 injured and over 100 people homeless. court awarded life imprisonment to the accused. Inder Bhateja in 1999, by the They are also accused in a Kalyan sessions court, the separate case, the murder of Inder’s brother Ghanshyam, in 1990. It may be recalled that

Kalyan Sessions court judge Rajeshwari Bapat Sarkar had awarded life imprisonment to Suresh alias Pappu Kalani for criminal conspiracy (section 120B of Indian Penal Code), while Bacchi Pandey, Baba Gabriel and Mohammad Sheikh were held guilty for murder under section 302 of IPC. Two others, Narendra Ramsinghani and Richard Fernandes, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Kalani and the other accused were initially charged under the Terrorist And Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) for Inder’s murder. However in 2001, the judge dropped TADA charges against the accused and transferred the murder trial to the Kalyan sessions court. While arguing in court, Special Public Prosecutor

(SPP) Vikas Patil sought the death penalty for all four convicts, citing it as a rarest of rare case. “He has more than dozen murder cases pending against him, most of which are under trial,” Patil told the court. In 1990, Kalani was contesting the Ulhasnagar Assembly seat as a Congress candidate, while Bhateja and his brother Ghanshyam were supporters of the BJP candidate, Sheetaldas Harchandani. During polling on February 27, when the brothers caught Kalani's associates casting bogus votes, they were both threatened with dire consequences. No NOC, no redevelopment By Khushboo Panjabi

T

he funnel area of the Navi Mumbai International Airport – where aircrafts land and take off – has not been earmarked by the Aviation Department, thus bringing the redevelopment of buildings surrounding the airport premises to a standstill. This issue was raised by NCP corporator, Raju Shinde, along with the support of other corporators in the General Body (GB) meeting of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). Shinde said, “The NMMC should make sure that the Aviation Department marks out the funnel area as soon as possible, as the department has made it mandatory that a No Objection Certificate (NOC) must be obtained from them for any redevelopment activity.” Corporators at the GB meeting also raised questions about the need for each construction in the satellite city to obtain an NOC from the Aviation De-

partment. Vaibhav Gaikwad, Shinde’s party colleague, made a point saying, “The Aviation Ministry is making it mandatory for high rises to obtain an NOC from them which is understood, but making NOCs compulsory for the redevelopment of ground-plus-one structures is absurd.” NMMC Commissioner, Abasaheb Jarhad, said that he will try to find a solution to this issue. As per the norms, builders engaging in redevelopment activities within a 25-km radius of the Navi Mumbai Airport site must obtain an NOC from the Aviation Department. NMMC Mayor Sagar Naik added, “I will write to the Civil Aviation Department and ask them to decide the take off and landing areas for the Navi Mumbai airport, so that all problems are solved once the funnel area is decided. I will also discuss the issue with local MP Sanjeev Naik and ask him to pursue it with the Union Government.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

CM assures passage of Anti-Superstition Bill in winter session By Suyash Padate

C

hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday asserted that the state government is committed to pass the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Bill in the winter session of the Legislature beginning next week. He also pointed that the government is continuing the talks with those opposing the longpending legislation. While speaking at the statewide conference on an ordinance against superstition and black magic at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, he said, “We have held talks with various people including those from political parties.

Some of them have extended their support, while some are still against it. But we will pass this bill in this session”. “The government has also registered cases against some people who have violated the ordinance, which was promulgated after the assassination of anti-superstition crusader Dr. Narendra Dabholkar in August this year. The government has completed the process of appointing the vigilance officers for the implementation of this law”, he added further. Over three months after the murder of rationalist Dr. Dabholkar, the Chief Minister finally put a full stop over the uncertainty of the approval of

this bill. Dr. Dabholkar, who was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Pune, had been fighting for the passage of this Bill. A political observer said that the state government had failed to pass the Bill for more than one decade despite strong demands by Dr. Dabholkar. Soon after his murder, the state government promulgated the ordinance. With Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party not being in favour of the bill, there is apprehension of pandemonium from the opposition benches when this bill is tabled. A simple majority is sufficient for the approval of this bill.

Actors Raveena Tandon and Sachin Pilgaonkar were invited to judge ‘Young Energy Savers’ event, organised at Reliance Energy Management Institute, Andheri (East). Students from eight schools participated in the event. Raghvendra Mehta, president Reliance Infra received the guests. ONGRESS president Sonia Gandhi is keen about getting the Women’s Reservation bill passed in the Winter Session of Parliament. This move appears to be part of her 2014 Lok Sabha poll campaign. The bill has been pending in Parliament for years and it is doubtful whether it will be passed now. Under one pretext or the other, the bill has not been passed. The Congress party evidently wants to take credit for doing something for women – before the elections. This is the second poll move of the Congress party. The first one was about the Food Security Bill. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) perhaps will support the bill. It does not want to be seen as being opposed to the bill. And then, it does not want the Congress to hog all the credit. It looks like some other parties too are ready to support the bill only because they want to be seen by the women as supportive of their cause. The bill, however, has strong opponents: The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) are dead set against more women coming into the legislature. SP’s Mulayam Singh Yadav, for some reasons known only to himself, is against women sitting in the legislature in large numbers. Where Mulayam speaks on the equal rights of women, he makes it clear that men and women have different functions to perform in a society. The RJD too is quite vehement about its stand about women’s reservation in the legislature. Chances are a vote might not be taken on the women’s bill during the ensuing session of Parliament. There is likely to be a discussion, but the bill may not be passed. In a democracy, every citizen – man or woman – must have equal rights. Today, man is in a dominating position and a woman is yet to come into her own fully. That is why the need for women’s reservation.

S campaigning ended for the assembly election in Delhi, BJP leader Arun Jaitley made a startling confession. We know who the loser is but we don’t know who’s winning, he said. In other words, he was pretty confident that Sheila Dikshit’s Congress had lost Delhi but he was at a loss to judge his own party’s capacity to defeat the flavour of this poll season — Arvind Kejriwal’s Johnny-come-lately Aam Aadmi Party. There is no question that Kejriwal has added dollops of excitement to an election that rarely attracts attention because of Delhi’s small size and its chief minister’s curtailed powers. Riding twin waves of dissatisfaction against the Dikshit and Manmohan Singh governments, Kejriwal has succeeded in harnessing the popular upsurge generated by Anna’s anti-corruption movement and the anti-rape stir that followed a year later. There’s a buzz around AAP and it’s confounded both the BJP and the Congress which never anticipated a serious challenge in their bastion of 66 years. Dikshit has kept up a brave face even as support for her party was obviously dwindling towards the end of the campaign. The BJP, on the other hand, has looked jittery all the way. It’s fired all its big guns, from prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi to its two parliamentary leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley as well as a host of others. And it still doesn’t know whether it can pull off a victory despite the palpable anger against the Congress. The BJP has much more at stake in Delhi than either the Congress or AAP. Modi has devoted a disproportionately large amount of time on this assembly election. He has addressed two mega rallies in the city and several smaller ones in all of Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha segments. His posters are all over the city and BJP candidates are throwing his name as bait to voters. All this for an assembly poll in a state which is not even his own. The BJP’s failure to win Delhi then will be a personal failure for Modi. Party circles are worried that a defeat could fatally wound Brand Modi just as the campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections begins. After all, the Delhi voter is the quintessential urban neo

It turns out, the Emperor has a strong link to both, going back to his days as a newly married Crown Prince. The royal couple made a private trip to New Delhi in 1960 shortly after getting married. At that time, they enjoyed a morning amble in Lodi Garden and were impressed by the ambience and heritage monuments in the park. The Emperor, then Crown Prince, also laid the foundation stone of the IIC. There’s an interesting tale behind this. When Jawaharlal Nehru conceived the idea of creating a centre to promote activities in the spheres of international affairs, culture and academic thought, the Rockefeller Foundation suggested that he model it on the lines of the International House of Japan that it had helped set up on similar lines. ‘We destroy ourselves just by consuming’ L

ORD BUDDHA spoke about sensory impressions, what we hear, what we see, what we feel, what we think, is the source of food we consume. When you drive toward a city, you consume. There are advertisements, there are noises and even if you don't want to consume, you consume anyway. When you watch television, you consume. When you read newspaper, you consume. When you listen to music, you consume. And items of your consumption may bring a lot of toxins and poisons and war and depression into your body and into your consciousness. Sensory impressions, just listening to a conversation full of hate, full of fear, full of pessimism is consumption that bring into your consciousness the element of hate, of fear, of anger. That's not good for your health. That is why protecting one's self, not to allow these items of consumption to penetrate into our body, our family, our society is very important. How many scenes of violence our children witness by watching television? When they grow up as 10-year-old, they watch many

I have spoken to many politicians about this. Is it possible for them to make a kind of law forbidding the production of films and magazines and books that contain so much violence and fear? These politicians are not strong enough. They are afraid of losing voters. Freedom should be understood in such a way that can protect us, protect our family and society. We are not free to kill. Akhilesh’s love for hard rock spurs Mulayam’s socialist act IF Samajwadi Party circles are to be believed, the idea of using Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ as the theme song for Mulayam Singh Yadav’s 2014 campaign came from son Akhilesh Yadav. The young UP chief minister is a self-confessed rock fan who loves everything from hard rock to heavy metal and has been an afficionado since his college days. Of course, virtually none in the SS have heard the song. But Mulayam was obviously tickled by the idea of integrating his Socialist message with a popular rock song released in 1989. Joel’s song contains rapid-fire allusions to 100 headline events between 1949 and 1989. The SS jingle, on the other hand, is loaded with references to major Socialist leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayprakash Narayan. The lyrics were penned by Uday Pratap who is currently culture minister in Akhilesh’s government in Lucknow. Wonder what Billy Joel would have said to the reworked version of his iconic song. Meanwhile, SS sources are mum on the price the party paid to buy the rights to the music. to poison people with your products. You have to be responsible for your society. If you feel that you are free to produce this kind of items that bring a lot of toxins and violence and craving into the body and the consciousness of the people, especially of the younger generation, you are destroying us. You are destroying the future. You act on the basis of your craving. You want power, you want wealth, you want fame and you destroyed us. You are not responsible for the well-being of the people and that is why true freedom has to rule with responsibility. It is our responsibility that will protect our freedom. When we are involved in drugs and alcohol, we lose our freedom. We are caught. The Buddha used this image. There is a cow who has skin disease so serious that she doesn't seem to have any skin anymore. She's exposed to all kind of attacks. When the cow lies down, all the insects come up and suck her blood. When the cow goes close to a tree, the tiny creatures that live in the bark of a tree will come out and suck her blood and when you bring the cow in the open, the insects will fly out and fix themselves on the cow and suck the blood. PM should face probe into various scams L.K. Advani, the veteran BJP leader after a long silence has come out rather strongly against the huge scams. He has not minced words in condemning the PM, that he is more culpable in the Coal scam than the Congress President. This is very much along the perceptive lines of frustrated citizens also, who have been reduced to mere onlookers at the ‘ability’ of the PM to distance himself from not only the Coal scam but also from the 2G and the CWG scandals which are also huge. The precious taxpayers’ money is hijacked, thus forcing the common citizens and senior citizens to pay higher rates of taxes under several nomenclatures. The PM and the FM do not seem to have made any serious attempt to get back the black money said to have been parked in Swiss banks. Thus no sincere effort is made by the PM to work assiduously towards ‘economic upliftment’ of the citizens thus reducing the inflation, tax burden and a series of ‘economic deficits’ while exempting the senior citizens from the whole gambit of taxes. The PM and FM, of late, are said to have exhorted that the CBI should keep themselves away from the policy domains of the govt., giving some ludicrous reasons hinting that the decisions taken by the PM and the FM in respect of the Coal scam and the 2G scam should not be investigated by the CBI. This is totally unacceptable and counters natural justice in that the malafide intentions behind framing a policy cannot be ruled out in any

APATHETIC ATTITUDE: The wheel-chair race in progress at the international event which was a big muddle.

Pune Marathon mess I was a participant in last Sunday‘s Pune International Marathon’s wheel-chair race and it was badly managed, We were supposed to to take ‘right turn’ from 7, Loves Chowk but there were no LETTER OF marshals to guide us at THE DAY that point and hence we took the ‘left turn’ during the race. Many participants from the Military Hospital as well as Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Pune were also misguided. Hence we could not make it in time and thereby lost without a fight. I urge the organisers of the Pune Marathon to take note of this mishappening and ensure that such mistakes are not repeated at the cost of eager participants.

that the BJP is likely to emerge as the largest single party in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, but may fall short of an absolute majority. However, the combined strength of the Congress and the AAP can easily cross the half-way mark. In that situation, these two Parties, being devoutly secular in nature, can join hands as a coalition to defeat the communal forces by staking their claim to form the next govt. in the national capital. Alternately, with the same sacred purpose in mind, either of them can come to power with the other offering support from outside.

CBI should get autonomy

Spare Hrithik, please

CENTRAL Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had made a final entreaty to the country’s highest court after government’s disinterest in grating them autonomy and major power to its chief who have sought for himself status equivalent to a secretary to the government which allow their organisation head to act without bureaucratic constraints and provide greater administrative and financial elbowroom to him. There is strong case for according autonomy to the CBI chief it it to become a smart organisation capable of responding to complex criminal trends, effective policing, investigative priorities and legal demands. But autonomy without accountability is dangerous, especially for a law enforcement agency that has, over the years, allowed itself to be manipulated by its political masters. It is high time this shackles must be broken and CBI must be autonomous, but also bound by accountability and professional integrity as the independent body.

IT is saddenning that the media has gone overboard and sensationalised a story on Hrithik Roshan’ s illness little realising how it could reflect on the celebrity’s status. According to a report carried by a section of the media, Hrithik has put off his shoot for ‘Bang Bang’ scheduled from November 27 till January 2014 since he has to go to US for treatment. There is also a report that the producer of the film will be incur a huge loss, running into crores, owing to the cancellation of the shoot since he has erected a massive set with an European feeling at the film city for the picturisation of a song featuring Hrithik and Katrina. The fact is that after his brain surgery, Hrithik seems to be getting frequent headaches and to get relief once for all he will be visiting US for a check up and treatment. — K.V. Raman, Malad

Women’s trinity in Goa court IT is interesting to note that there is a trinity of women legal luminaries in the ongoing Tarun Tejpal rape case in Goa — the investigating officer is Police Inspector Sunita Sawant who has the reputation of being a tough cop who always gets at the truth; the defence lawyer is Geeta Luthra who left no stone unturned in her valiant attempt to save her client employer from police custody and then there is, finally, the judge of the sessions court, Anuja Prabhudesai, who has been exemplary in her treatment of the anticipatory bail application which is normally disposed off pretty quickly. She has paid a lot of attention to the arguments of the prosecution and the defence and kept everyone guessing for nearly four hours before delivering her verdict. Central Highlands of India Chapter 6 7 Short notes

1 Major sources of irrigation on Central Highlands of India. Ans. 1) The Central Highlands of India are mostly dependent on rain for irrigation, though the major sources of irrigation in Bundelkhand are wells; the water in the wells depends on the rain. 2) The ponds are the second major sources of irrigation. They are spread all over and serve as a major source of drinking water as well as irrigation. 3) These traditionally existing ponds maintain the water table in the wells. 2 Industries of Central Highlands of India Ans. 1) Textiles are a major industry in Malwa region. Indore and Ujjain are its main centres. 2) Handicrafts are an important source of income for the tribal population. Coloured lacquerware from Ratlam, rag dolls from Indore and papier-mâché articles from Indore, Ujjain and other centres are well known. 3) There are many centres of large and medium scale industries. Indore has a large scale factory that produces diesel engines. Pithampur near Indore is known as an industrial town for its heavy concentration of automotive industry. 3 Malwa Plateau Ans. 1) Malwa Plateau is located in the South Western part of the Central Highlands. 2) The average elevation of the plateau is 500 m. It is characerised by low relief and undulating topography at some places spotted with low hills that rise above the plateau surface. 3) The major part of the plateau lies in Madhya Pradesh. It is located between Aravalli range in the West and Vindhya ranges in the South. 4) Plateau is a source region of rivers like Mahi that flow into Gujarat and the Chambal and Betwa rivers, which flow towards North. 4 The Central Highlands Physiography (Ref. Page 51 Right Side) 5 Aravalli Mountain Ans. 1) Aravalli Mountain is the oldest mountain range in India. It stretches in the SW-NE direction. It is broad in the South Western parts and marrows towards North East. 2) The main block of Aravalli hills is between Mount Abu and Ajmer. 3) ‘Gurushikhar’ is the highest peak in these hills. The height of the hills decreases towards the North and they appear as a chain of broken hills due to the erosion by headwaters of Banas river along the eastern slopes, as well as along the Western slopes by Luni river. Erosion is greater along the Eastern slopes. 4) This has resulted in narrowing of the Aravalli in the Central part giving it the shape of a dumbbell. 5) These hills form a part of the water divide between the drainage of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. 6 Chota Nagpur Plateau Ans. 1) Much of it lies in Jharkhand and extends into West Bengal, Chhatisgarh and Odisha. 2) It is one of the mineral rich regions of our country, having granitic gneiss in large tracts in the Central part. The rocks of Gondwana formation bearing high grade coal seems to have made this region rich in minerals. 3) It consists of a series of plateaus at different levels. The surface of all the plateau are flat and are studded with low rounded hills. 4) The scarps separating the plateaus have given rise to spectacular waterfalls. 6 The Vindhya Range Ans. 1) The Vindhya Range forms a boundary between North and South India. 2) Its length from the Western part of Madhya Pradesh to Bihar in the East is about 1100 km. Its altitude is about 450 to 600 m though at few places, it exceeds 900 m. It does not have many peaks. 3) The Southern margin of this range defines the edge of the Narmada trough. 4) The Southern slope of the range is quite steep, whereas Northern slopes are quite gentle and they extend northward for quite some distance.

couple of weeks ago, school teachers from across the state threatened to boycott the State School Certificate (SSC) exams if the state government did not review and change the school bus policy it was about to establish. Now, junior college teachers’ unions have joined the agitation, although for a different reason, stating that they will boycott the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exams if their demands are not met. As the state government has not yet decided on the issue, more than 75,000 teachers have planned to go on strike from February 2014. If this happens, students of Classes 10 and 12 will be affected. On Saturday, the Maharashtra Junior College Teachers Union (MJCT) stated that if the government does not implement the three-tier pay scale for teachers with effect from January 1996, and not from the year 2000, they will boycott the exams. Demands were also made for the 42 days of leave from 1999, as leave were deducted after the teachers decided to go on strike for the implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. Last week, the state education department had issued a Government Resolution (GR) stating that any mishap or accident involving students travelling in school buses will be the principal’s responsibility. Unhappy with this directive, the Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Principals and Teachers Union has asked the state government to revise and change the GR, failing which they will protest and boycott the board exams. Talking to the ADC, Prashanth Redij, Secretary, Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Principals and Teachers Union, said “The new school bus policy states that principals will be responsible for any accident or mishap that takes place in the school bus, which is illogical. If this school bus policy is not revised, we will boycott the board exams”. When the teachers had protested and boycotted the board exams in February 2013, the state government assured them in writing that their demands will be fulfilled as soon as possible. But since then, no meeting or discussion has been organised between the government and the teachers regarding the demands. Anil Deshmukh, Secretary, MJCT, said, “Last year when we teachers had boycotted the exams, we were assured in writing that our demands will be fulfilled as soon as possible. It’s been nine months after the assurance, but the government has shown no interest. It’s high time that the government should keep the students in mind and fulfill our demands.”

earing a clutch of petitions, Bombay High Court yesterday directed the Maharashtra Government to form within two weeks a State Cooperative Election Commission Authority to conduct elections of all cooperative societies. The direction was given by a bench headed by Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari, which heard petitions filed by cooperative societies and activists, reports PTI. The petitions said that in accordance with a 1992 constitutional amendment, the State Cooperative Act had been amended to pro-

vide for compulsory constitution of a State Cooperative Election Authority by December 31. However, the petitions alleged the state had not yet formed such an authority. The petitioners argued that if such an authority was not formed, there would be chaos in the cooperative sector all over the state as there would be no authority to monitor elections of cooperative societies which number over 2.25 lakh. Such an authority would hold elections of all types of cooperative societies including housing and sugar sectors.

n the last few years, there have been quite a few changes in the perception of jobs and careers. Earlier, more conventional career streams and job opportunities were preferred, while today there is a substantial increase in the development of freelance or work-from-home careers. There are however, several aspects to evaluate and consider in both career paradigms before individuals decide to opt for one over the other. Full-time, conventional job pathways still retain their place of pride in the job market hierarchy. The facets of organisational structure and professional discipline in a full-time work environment, attracts people that want to conform to such a disciplined system. The fixed work schedule also appeals to several people because it allows for no procrastination in the completion of tasks on a day-to-day basis. On the other hand, despite the growing stimulus to work from home,

HR professional Aarthi Mohan explains that in most organisations, a person with a full-time work experience would always be preferred over someone with relevant experience, but working majorly as a freelancer. “Between a fulltimer and a freelancer, both with the same level of experience and similar work-based aptitude, organisations will always go for the full-timer. Even though the work handled may be same, there are certain things that only a full-timer can and will be expected to understand, deliver and be applicable for. The fact that the full-timer would be coming in potentially with previous organisational experience and would have been physically present in the previous jobs will always work to the candidate’s advantage,” she adds. But even as she talks about the HR perception of the two concepts, Mohan qualifies that the selection of full-timers over freelancers is not applicable on all jobs fronts. “The nature of the job,” she states, “also comes into the picture. If the

job is such that projects can be handled by someone who is not present in the office, then the organisation would definitely want to opt for the freelance candidate than the former. But such job profiles are limited to a few niche areas and thus the HR mindset always finds the risk to be higher in potentially hiring freelancers over full-timers.” Speaking of niche areas, content writing and journalism are two major areas where one can find a high percentage of freelance contributors. These two job roles make it flexible for organisations and publications to channelise the potential job prospects to their optimum. Senior freelance journalist Janaki Krishnamoorthi elaborating on the trend explains, “In the ongoing debate between full-time versus freelance job opportunities, there are a few interesting pros and cons that emerge. The advantage of fulltime work opportunities is that one gets more exposure, better on-the-job safety and security and most importantly, a continuity of income. These are aspects that are distinctly missing when one considers freelancing. But then again, if an

individual is not someone who wants to be tied down with the organisational mode of work, then freelancing is the best option for them.” According to Krishnamoorthi, the biggest advantage that freelancers have in these two professions over fulltimers is the choice of choosing projects. “Freelancers can choose, accept and reject projects as per their suitability, which full-timers in an organisation, cannot afford to do. Similarly, they can also handle multiple projects at the same time as per their own schedules without worrying about conflicts of issues which full-timers cannot do,” she differentiates. But she also adds that if someone wants to choose freelancing over a fulltime job, one needs to not only consider all these elements, but also think about the prospect of irregular and disparate income levels when it comes to freelancing. She adds that one has to accept that the income level may not match the potential lucrative salary package that full-timers get. If one finds it unable to accept this reality, then freelancing is not a viable option for them.

Want to study medicine in Singapore

My daughter is currently studying in the IGCSE board in Mumbai and wishes to continue her A-Levels abroad. She has UK citizenship. I would like to know about High Schools in Leicester for the Sixth Form. —Rupali Some of the reputed schools in Leicester that your daughter can choose from are The Leicester High School for Girls, English Martyrs Catholic School, The Leicestershire Montessori Preparatory School, the Uppingham School and the Ashby School. All of these schools have A-Levels. The Uppingham School has a boarding school too. The rest are day schools. Since you have mentioned that your daughter has UK citizenship, she could avail of the scholarships and bursaries that the respective schools may have provisions for. The standard requirements for gaining entry into these schools are the evaluation of the GCSE grades, entrance examinations and entrance interview to gauge capability and interest. The requirements would vary from school to school. In addition, on an average, the annual day school fees are approximately £21,000 and approximately £31,000 for boarding school. If your daughter is involved in extra curricular activities like music and art, she could avail of these scholarships too in certain schools.

Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication – Symbiosis International University in Pune also offers a Bachelor of Media Studies course for 3 years. Symbiosis has a Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET) for their first round of entrances. They also have a Group Exercise and a Personal Interview.

FLAME School of Performing Arts is another reputed institution in Pune that evaluates the students 10+2 grades and their ability and willingness to learn.

I am interested in pursuing my MBBS degree from Singapore and would like you to provide me an overview on the

application process for reputed colleges offering this degree. There are two reputed schools in Singapore that offer an MBBS degree. One is the National University of Singapore (NUS) – Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine.

The applications to the LKC Medicine should be submitted via the NTU application portal. Make sure the application is submitted online between December and April. The earlier you submit your application, the earlier you know about the status of your application. LKC has an entrance test called BMAT. BMAT is a BioMedical Admissions Test that is administered by the Cambridge Assessment. The selection interview is held in April and post that, the offer is made anytime between April to June. They also have a health screening as per their enrolments. NUS on the other hand requires good grades in high school for subjects like Chemistry and either Biology or Physics. The admission to medicine will be based on the University score and the Faculty score. The University Score is computed by the Office of Admissions which comprises 50 per cent of the total admission score. The Faculty Score on the other hand is computed by the School of Medicine which is the remaining 50 per cent of the admission score.

have always won dered about how my tomorrow is going to be, how the world’s tomorrow is going to be and the thoughts that come to my mind are fairly unbelievable. Some say our tomorrow will be much brighter than our yesterday. It will be much more technologically advanced, which will in some way or the other make this world a better place to live in. My thoughts about tomorrow are more or less optimistic in nature. How will the world become a better place to live in? A simple question, but having a very difficult answer. The need of the hour is to take adequate care of our environment. In each and every sphere of development, we need to become more and more environment conscious. Technology, infrastructure, economy and healthcare need to follow development that meets the needs of the present generations without destroying the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. Today, technology has become smarter ranging from cell phones to televisions. A day will come when surgeries and medical operations will be done by machines only, when cars

will move on their own, when our lives will become more easier and less hectic. The future holds a free world, a world where one’s rights are not restricted, where poverty is alleviated and equality is in its complete existence. A world, where discrimination and corruption is abolished and where the significance of borders and

boundaries is diminished. At present, the future remains a dream. For that dream to be realised, a lot has to be done and a lot has to be undone. And yet there is a grim side to all of it. If we continue with the attitude that we have towards the problems that others are facing, that nature itself is facing, then we prove ourselves wrong in calling

ourselves an advanced human race. When we can’t take care of what has been given to us in the present, what hope do we have in the future? Let’s take that small step, a step that entire mankind has to take to ensure a future we dream and hope of can become reality – the future in which we and our generations will live.

Khyati Shah, PR Executive says that there are plenty of opportunities in the PR field but one needs to move out of the operational mode

I

« PEER SPEAK

graduated in Bachelor of Mass Media from the Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Management this year. Well to be honest like every teenager I was always confused about what to do next. And this always kept me worried about my career. I was always inclined to and keen to know more about the media, to know how exactly this industry works, what story exactly makes a headline....and what better than publicity and Media Relations to answer these questions. Planning, plotting the publicity and news was always my thing, and that is how I am here today, in the field of Public Relations. I like the field of PR because it helps you build relations, contacts and the scenario is changing now with plenty of opportunities. From more operational Public Relations, firms are now

investing to become strategic professionals. When a creative freedom is allowed, it helps you to stay young forever; that is what I liked the most about this field. My education has worked wonders, I must say. Having a background in Mass Media and having studied PR, it did help me a lot; and like it is said, knowledge never goes waste. However having said that it is also true that what we learn and study in our high-school is different from what we do in the real world. But I think it still helps you because it boosts your confidence in experimenting with different things, and helps you to explore within your own space. Everyday is a training period for me. In today’s dynamic society you are exposed to a zillion things and life poses a great challenge in front of you. So all I remember about my training days is that I am still training and probably will certainly like to learn something new every day. I am at a junior level. I have a team leader and

my seniors are there to guide and help me. The benefit of starting your career by working in a small agency is that you get a chance to try your hands at everything. And I think so far I have not only learned to plan and strategise publicity but have also learned a little of media buying and marketing. It is a very interesting field and I am growing well in the organisation. All I need to invest is a lot of time and effort, and a little hope and faith and belief in me and my potential. Remuneration in this field is also good. As a fresher you can earn Rs.5,000 to 18,000. But you can earn a lot later as there are plenty of opportunities to grow. How many years one takes to become a professional is very subjective. It completely depends on the individual. But yes nothing can work out overnight so I would say to become a professional, one must continuously learn and take up new challenges and know the place they are working at; the people they are working with

and the kinds of emotions you deal with. Once a person understands the entire field and nuances of PR, the person begins to grow as a professional. PR helps you build the image of your client. It gives you tremendous opportunities to make contacts that can help you in your future. It gives you good visibility and a bit of fame too as you get acquainted with the media. It is the most economical way to reach a mass audience. PR develops a stronger, more controlled image for your business and creates the perception that the business is actively moving forward. PR is all about developing good contacts and relationships with various media and target audiences to promote the reputation of your client. However, every field has its disadvantages. PR is a very difficult discipline to understand, conduct successfully and sometimes it is misunderstood. It is not easy at all to build good and long-

term media relations with all. Sometimes, it is hard to predict the responses of the audience. I am keen to continue working in the field of PR but I want to learn more and grow in the field. I know I have to give my best now and at this moment I am giving my 100 per cent to my job. All I have to say is that I am at a very early stage of my career, so I just have to make the most of the opportunities coming my way and grow. For those who want to take up this profession, I will advise them to do a proper research of the industry standards before entering the field. You have to understand that PR is not just getting daily ‘coverage’ for your client; it is more than that. One has to aim to become a strategic PR professional than just an operational one. The number of PR companies is growing by the day and there are plenty of opportunities in the field. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

‘Base treatment on logical analysis’ The field of paramedical training is growing fast and today, physiotherapists have a wide range of specialisations to choose from. Dr. Kern Rebello, a Physiotherapist in Neuromuscular Rehabilitation with a specialisation in falls and balance dysfunction, speaks to Naressa Coutinho about a career in Physiotherapy and how it can be pursued both, domestically and overseas. What is Physiotherapy? Physical Therapy or physiotherapy is a health care profession which involves evaluating, diagnosing and setting treatment goals for patients both young and old affected with impairment, handicap or disability as a result of a birth defect, injury, neurological illness or old age to name a few. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, a Physiotherapist is a huge asset in the complete recovery of a patient. A physiotherapist or a paramedical professional has vast knowledge regarding the biomechanics of the body and is better equipped to treat a patient with movement difficulties and thus improve the quality of life in an individual. How can one become a physiotherapist? A student needs to complete HSC in the science stream; he/she then needs to apply for the state/All India entrance exams for medical courses. Some deemed universities have their own individual exams and interviews. The physiotherapy course is completed over a four and a half year period, inclusive of a sixmonth internship. Fees vary depending on the type of medical seat; whether it is through the state or via management. It could vary from Rs.2-4 lakh for the complete course.

You have studied in USA, in your opinion how can a student pursue physiotherapy overseas? In USA, they offer the Doctorate of Physical therapy (DPT). It’s a curriculum aimed at direct access for patients which means that the patient does not need to consult a doctor for a prescription to visit a therapist. The student must first complete his/her pre-medical school requirements. They then become eligible to apply for medical school, which means they have basics in medical subjects such as anatomy, neuroscience and have also completed certain hours of volunteering under a Licensed Physical Therapist. A friend in need is a friend indeed MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2013

Simran Motwani, H.R College

In today’s tech savvy and fast paced world, children seem to spend more time on the computer and at classes rather than doing what they technically should be doing – which is playing, running around and exercising that body. Even when it comes to education, students have it all on the computer at the tap of their fingers. We ask students whether teachers are slowly becoming redundant and whether the role and use of a teacher is depreciating. I think the role of the teacher has decreased due to the internet. But, even if you accomplish a task through the wide usage of the internet and find the matter that you are looking for, when it comes to values and concepts if you want to really be excellent in what you do, you need to be attentive to lectures and to your teacher. You will find the necessary matter you need on the internet but to understand it perfectly a teacher is what you need. Bhavi, UPG College of Management

I think the role of the teacher has decreased but not completely. I agree that the respect toward teachers has really decreased. Also, if you want to understand your studies better you need the teacher to help you comprehend the subject matter. Plus the internet is very distracting as there are advertisements and games everywhere on the internet. Mahjabeen Shaikh, University of Mumbai Of course students can find a lot of information on the internet and it can be used additionally along with your lessons but the role of the teacher is still very important because you need them to explain to you properly, plus I believe that because you share information with someone else you will remember it better than by just reading. Concerning the respect I think it has decreased but it is mainly because teachers are younger and students take them less seriously. Rimma Quadros, Hinduja College

without us facing any problems, and during such times friends are always there to our rescue. Everyone has their own favourite group of people whom they love to hangout with, and mine is definitely the best one. We talk for hours together and boredom doesn’t exist when we are around each other. We are never serious and laugh out loud even a day before our exams. Our random conversations turn out to be epic at the end of the day, cre-

ating a small little memory of that wellspent day. We stand ‘all for one and one for all’. Our main motto is to keep everyone happy and stay happy. People change, life moves on but what never changes is your friends, they will always be the same even when you’re away from them. I thank God for having created these crazy mad people in my life. If I ever had a wish, it would be our friendship to last forever; which without any doubt will surely last for long. << Children from underprivileged society got an opportunity to learn sportsmanship, engage in sporting activities and interact with other kids during the ‘Interactive Games Day’ initiative organized by ‘Down to Earth’. The event witnessed participation from around 400 underprivileged children.

WHO NEEDS TEACHERS?

A

friend in need is a friend indeed is a proverb that stands true always. God does not create friends, it is we who make friends by talking and interacting with others; our friends are the ones with whom we spend the entire day, the day seems incomplete without meeting them. I personally have a crazy set of friends; they are the ones who have always stood by me. My life wouldn’t have been complete without them. I have too many friends but there is this bunch of foolish freaks who are four in number but one when it comes to friendship! Not a single day have I spent with these idiots without laughing, there’s one simple rule that we follow, ‘smile like there is no tomorrow’ and this is what they teach me; friendship is not about being together for years, we can make friends even in the shortest span of time. It is nice to have such friends who care for you and will always drag you to the right path in life. Every friendship faces some or the other difficulties and so does mine, at times we do have misunderstandings between us, but they don’t last for too long. There are many kinds of people whom we come across and become friends with; some of them are not our true friends and definitely not the trustworthy ones. Life is imperfect

EW DELHI: Supreme Court yesterday set a deadline of March 31 next year for state governments to frame rules for regulating sale of acid and other corrosive substances to prevent their misuse particularly by jilted lovers. A bench headed by Justice R M Lodha also asked all Chief Secretaries to file response on providing free-of-cost treatment, including plastic surgery, to acid attack victims. “We direct the Chief Secretaries of all states and the administrator of the Union Territories to comply with the direction given in the order on July 18 and frame rules in tune with model rules framed by Centre

to regulate the sale of acid at the earliest and possibly by March rpt March 31, 2014,” the bench said. It directed that whenever an FIR is lodged in an acid attack case, the SDM of the area concerned will hold inquiry into the procurement of acid by the “wrongdoer”. In a bid to curb acid attacks on women, the apex court had earlier directed that this crime be made a non-bailable offence and had enhanced to Rs.three lakh the compensation amount for the victim. The court had said that a photo identity card containing residential address issued by authorities concerned would be required for purchasing such substances which in any case cannot be sold to a person

who is below 18 years. The bench, which was hearing a PIL filed in 2006 by Delhi- based acid attack victim Laxmi, who was then a minor, had also passed a slew of interim directions on various issues, including sale of acids. “We direct that the acid attack victims shall be paid a compensation of at least Rs three lakh by the state government concerned as an after-care and rehabilitation cost for such victims,” the court had said. The court had also said that out of the compensation amount of Rs three lakh, Rs one lakh will be paid within 15 days of bringing to the notice of the state government the occurrence of the attack. Website regrets ‘confusion’ over Sonia Gandhi’s name in richest list W

ASHINGTON: An American news website has regretted the “confusion” caused by the inclusion of the name of Congress president Sonia Gandhi from the list of richest leaders of the world and deleted it. The removal of the name occurred shortly after the Congress derided the website for the “absurd and ridiculous” item. “Our editors have been unable to verify the amount, removed the link, and regret any confusion,” the Huffington post said, four days after it listed Gandhi as the 12th richest world leader putting her asset to USD 2 billion. “Sonia Gandhi and the former emir of Qatar Hamid bin Khalifa al-Thani have been removed from this list,” the editor of ‘Huffington Post’ wrote on its website last evening after the list of the world’s richest leader was updated. “Gandhi was originally included based on a listing on a third party site which was subsequently called into question,” said the editor without giving name of the thirdparty site. The Congress Party had questioned the authenticity of the such a figure by ‘Huffington Post’. “If ‘Huffington Post’ would stick to huffing and puffing, then I think

Congress Party chief Sonia Gandhi they would do a much better job for themselves. Because If you do put out these absurd and ridiculous things out in print, then you only open yourself to be made a laughing stock. I would not even like to dignify with a response,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari yesterday said in New Delhi after the list was released. While putting Gandhi’s wealth at USD 2 billion, ‘Huffington Post’ had not given details of how it arrived at such a figure.

Sexual harassment case: DRDE scientist Prabhat Garg surrenders G

WALIOR: Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE) scientist Prabhat Garg, against whom a research scholar has levelled allegations of sexual harassment, today surrendered before police here. Police said Garg turned himself in to University Police Station, reportedly after pressure built up on him by police and also his family members. In her complaint, the research scholar had accused Garg of sexually harassing her during 2010-11 when she was pursuing her work under him at the city-based institution. Police said the woman discontinued her research due to “uncomfortable situation” she was

experiencing under her guide, that is Garg, and also for her marriage. The woman suffered sexual harassment quietly till her marriage and also because of her career but when Garg allegedly did not spare her even after her marriage, she disclosed the matter to her husband. The couple then reached Gwalior and lodged a complaint with police who in turn registered an FIR against Garg under sections sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506-B (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC. Garg was produced before a local court which remanded him two-day police custody.

Rajpal Yadav sent to jail for contempt

EW DELHI: A man has been arrested along with his brother for raping his niece for nearly two decades, police said yesterday. The accused Shashi Thakur and Mukul Thakur were arrested on Saturday by the staff of Connaught Place police station after the girl, a fashion designer, had registered a complaint against the duo in April this year. The victim, daughter of Shashi Thakur’s sister-in-law has alleged that she was constantly being raped since she was nine years old. “The girl has been living at Shashi Thakur’s house after her mother and father had separated.

In 1994, when she was just nineyear-old, Shashi raped her. Being scared, she did not reveal anything about the incident to anyone. Later, Shashi’s brother Mukul also raped her,” police official said. Her ordeal did not stop even after completing her graduation from Hyderabad and then moving to Delhi. The duo often visited her and raped her each time, police said. The victim decided to approach the police in April and filed an FIR at Connaught Place police station. A team was sent to Muzzafarpur from where the two were apprehended. They have been sent into fourteen days judicial custody.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (December 03, 2013) a net 16 points (0.26%) and closed at the 6201 point level. The market opened down at the 6204 points level. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 11.00 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6225 points level at 11.20 a.m. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6191 points level at 2.40 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 34 points. Sentiment seemed bearish as amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were losers, while 22 stocks closed in the green. Buying was seen in realty, oil & gas, metal, power, IT and technology, while selling was seen in FMCG, consumer durables, banking, auto, capital goods and healthcare stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 5.52%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 681 were gainers, 709 were losers and 68 remained unchanged.

Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indic ator: The RSI is above the 40 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indica tor: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are flat. No signal here. The ADX is flat while the Market Index is falling. No signal here.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5921 points level. The next support is at the 5834 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6217 points level. The next resistance is at the 6357 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6206 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6187. Support (2) = 6172. Resistance (1) = 6221. Resistance (2) = 6240.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising. Further, the velocity parameters too are positively trended. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of an up move unfolding. Incidentally, the index is near a major resistance level at the 6217 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday). There is a possibility that it could find some further resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6148) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6099) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6150) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5870) Positive.

ASCI upholds complaints against 121 campaigns. Companies including Hindustan Unilever, Colgate Palmolive, GlaxoSmithKline, Piramal Healthcare, Idea Cellular and Godrej & Boyce faulted for misleading advertisements By A Business Reporter

F

rom showing illegal content to making unsubstantiated claims, several prominent companies were faulted for running 121 misleading ad campaigns in September by advertising industry watchdog ASCI. The companies included Hindustan Unilever, Colgate Palmolive, GlaxoSmithKline, Piramal Healthcare, Idea Cellular and Godrej & Boyce. According to the Customer Complaints Council (CCC) of the Advertising Standard Council of India, the maximum complaints of misleading ads during the month were from education, health and personal care categories, reports PTI. ASCI upheld a complain against GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, where it had claimed in its print ad of Junior Horlicks of having supplement contents like DHA and CHOLINE, which are important

for child’s brain development. However, it was not adequately and scientifically substantiated, hence the complain was upheld. ASCI also found an ad by Aditya Birla group-controlled Idea Cellular having “illegal contents, where the telecom operator in a promotional offer asked to pay Rs 299 for 4 beers (330ml) or 2 shots with a choice of starter worth Rs 550.The advertisement was an SMS with illegal content (Advertisement of alcoholic beverages) from their own SMS server. It also pulled up Colgate-Palmolive, where in a TV commercial of tooth paste ‘Colgate Strong’, it had claimed that ‘Colgate hai to no cavities’, ‘Colgate is 100 per cent guaranteed in providing anti-cavity protection’. In the case of FMCG major Hindustan Unilever, in a print ad of its Ponds Age Miracle, the company had claimed that buyer would ‘look

up to 10 years younger’. The complaint against that was upheld. Besides, ASCI upheld complaints against Piramal Healthcare, Humsafar Dawakhana, Dr Batra’s Positive Health Clinic, Rich Feel Trichology Centre for making unsubstantiated claims in their ads. It also upheld a Godrej & Boyce for having a misleading message in its print ad of its Godrej air conditioner, where it had exaggerated the savings from electricity with implied comparison with a leading brand. The CCC concluded that the advertisement was misleading by exaggeration and implication and contravened the Code, the watchdog said. In the education sector, CCC found that claims in 88 different advertisers including Triumphant Institute of Management and Inlingua Bangalore were not substantiated and violating its guidelines for advertising of educational institutions.

Pulses Prices On The Decline By A Business Reporter

F

ood inflation in India has been on a steady uptrend this fiscal, rising to 18.2 % in October. Surging prices of rice, fruits & vegetables and animal protein (eggs/ meat/fish) have been the primary drivers of inflation. While overall food inflation has averaged 13.3 % during April-October, inflation in these three commodity categories alone was at 15.1 %. With a weight of 79 % in primary food, they have contributed 84 % to food inflation in the fiscal so far. But contrary to perception, not all food items have seen a spike in prices. Pulses, for one, have actually

seen a decline. In sugar, too, prices have fallen 6.9 % in October compared with the previous peak of 18.4 % seen in September 2012. Edible oils prices are lower at 0.7 % in October compared with around 10 % inflation a year ago. As measured by the wholesale price index, pulses prices fell 4.8 % in the first seven months of this fiscal, down steeply from 23.0 % in the same period a year ago. The declining prices of pulses are expected to render a huge benefit to Indian households where pulses form a dominant source of protein in the diet. According to Crisil Research “While prices of the commodity are expected to look up

somewhat in coming months as the base effect wears off, pulses inflation is likely to stay low over the next few months thanks to good monsoons, higher acreage, lower hikes in minimum support prices and moderate demand. Beyond that, low inflation in pulses will depend on demand revival and whether farmers continue to increase production despite low returns on the crop due to declining prices.

Commercial Real Estate Demand Remains Subdued Supply backlogs could exert pressure on rental and capital values By A Business Reporter

D

emand for commercial real estate is likely to remain subdued in the medium term as corporates continue to be in a consolidation mode while excess supply may put pressure on capital and rental values, property consultant CBRE said yesterday. The economic downturn has subdued office and retail markets that has affected sales and put pressure on capital values as well across major cities, CBRE South Asia Chairman and Managing Director Anshuman Magazine said in a statement. In the residential segment, he said the buyer sentiments have remained largely cautious due to relatively high price points and sticky borrowing costs, amid an uncertain economic climate. Investment has slowed considerably across segments resulting in weaker construction activity in most cities. Giving the outlook, Magazine said: “Against the current economic and political backdrop, demand for commercial real estate is likely to remain subdued in the medium term. “Corporates are expected to continue their focus on optimal space utilisation and cost cutting measures, and transaction activity is expected to be mainly restricted to taking up of small and medium sized space, he added He was also of the view that supply backlogs could exert pressure on rental and capital values as well. He, however, said that recent indications of revival in the global and domestic economy should contribute to better performance and improved economic prospects towards H2 2014. In the office space segment, CBRE said the demand declined during the third quarter of 2013, because corporates focused on

consolidating and downsizing their space portfolios, and/or relocating to peripheral markets. Office space absorption in the top seven cities fell by about 14 per cent in July-September of 2013 at over 6 million sq ft compared to over 7 million sq ft in previous quarter. Absorption of prime office space in full 2012 calendar year of top seven cities stood at over 25 million sq ft, while total absorption is over 19 million sq ft in the first three quarters of 2013, according to CBRE. While subdued demand and high vacancy levels have led to

rental stability in most markets in recent months, CBRE said weak absorption numbers has resulted in a decline in office space supply over previous quarters, weighing in on future investment plan. To boost commercial real estate segment, Magazine pitched for reforms in areas like slow project approval processes, supply bottlenecks, opening up key sectors like retail to FDI, and infrastructure creation through PPP projects. “Looking beyond the results of the upcoming General Elections in April 2014, the economy will not only need a clearly defined vision and competent economic management, but will also require proactive, industry-centric decision making along with sweeping reforms in a number of areas to drive faster growth, he said.

linton was the lucky winner of the Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy. It was an open race – very competitive. Racegoers wasted a lot of money on Toreleco which placed nowhere. Onassis, though won once and incurred penalty also attracted a lot of betting. Then there was another Pesi Shroff’s super horse – Storm Tracker which ran exceedingly well but lost narrowly. Yuville which had run last time out very well was nowhere. Winston also ran well but it could not cope with some of the better horses in the field. Your Royal Majesty, Pesi Shroff trained horse won the HDFC-ERGO Trophy easily. C.D. Katrak’s horse in the same race came second and the rest of the field was far beyond. The way your Royal Majesty won shows it is all set to win some Million races.

A shock winner on Sunday, which I had tipped, won the LEG Thurthuga Trophy at the odds of 25 to 1. On the tote, the dividend was Rs. 220 for Rs. 10. Pesi Shroff appears to have in his stable a good sort of a horse – The Big Bull. Sea Pearl was wrongly chosen by racegoers for a win. Follow Forest Vision which ran quite well in the race. Cyclops, which is trained by M.P. Jodha is another horse which needs attention. An unlucky runner in the Bayer Trophy was Nush which is owned by Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy and Mr. Z.K. Dhunjibhoy. It almost did it. In the last few metres nearing the post, the horse went neck and neck with One Wish and was beaten by a very narrow margin. The horse is trained by Nina M. Lalvani. Kartik G. trained Haunting Moments was the winner in the Div I of the Indo-German Christmas Trophy. When pro-

moted, Placerville filly can win again. In the last race on Sunday, Natalian Express, owned by Adi H. Shahiwala, Ms Pinaz A. Shahiwala, Mr. Xerxes A. Shahiwala won. INDIANS GO THROUGH THE PACES AHEAD OF FIRST ODI J

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2013

OHANNESBURG: The Indian cricket team prepared for the ODI series against South Africa by going through a rigorous training session here with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni promising to dish out “good and exciting cricket” during the tour starting Thursday. The first one-dayer will be followed by two more 50-over matches before the teams lock horns in a two-match Test series in what will be India’s first engagement in the post-Sachin Tendulkar era. The world number ODI side arrived here yesterday and after settling down in the Sandton hotel, the players made their way to the

ground to get acclimatised to the conditions here. Although India are touring with one of their least experienced squads in a long time, what could help them is that six players from the current side toured South Africa in August to play first-class and List A matches. One of the limited-overs games saw Shikhar Dhawan scoring 248. While South Africa struggled to get their batting combination right in the ODI series against Pakistan recently, India have been a force to reckon with in the shorter format. “If you love the ball coming on to the bat, that’s what you will see,” Dhoni told reporters

on arrival. With the tour being curtailed at BCCI’s insistence, fans here are reportedly upset, but Dhoni seemed at ease when asked if he was aware of the anger. “We can arrange a match for the administrators and let them go at it,” he said on a lighter vein, referring to the problems between BCCI and CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat. “The relationship between the Indian and South African teams has been good. Though we’ve seen a bit of chirping going around, it makes cricket interesting. The guys have not become too personal, which means we will have a good series. “Whenever we have come here,

we’ve got fantastic reception. I don’t think that will really change,” he said. India’s coach Duncan Fletcher is hopeful of India living upto the challenge. “The way the guys have played recently, they’ve got a lot of confidence. Our batting seems technically equipped. The only thing is the experience. But this lot is confident, they’ve got no baggage and they really believe in themselves.” What was supposed to be bumper schedule of two T20s, seven ODIs and three Tests, the tour has been been shortened to only three one-dayers and two Tests.

Dhoni wins 2013 LG McCullum, Taylor tons People’s Choice Award Dput New Zealand on top

M

UMBAI: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won this year’s LG People’s Choice Award, thus becoming only the second Indian cricketer to win the coveted prize after just-retired Sachin Tendulkar. Dhoni has now become only the third cricketer to win this award after Tendulkar, who was the first-ever recipient in 2010, and Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who won in 2011 and 2012. Other nominees for this year’s LG People’s Choice Award were Australia’s Michael Clarke, England’s Alastair Cook, India’s Virat Kohli, and South Africa’s AB de Villiers. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel received the award from Howard Lee, Director Home Entertainment, LG Electronics India Pvt Ltd, on behalf of Dhoni. The award, which was introduced at the 2010 LG ICC Awards in Bengaluru, was voted upon by close to 188,000 cricket fans around the world. The voting opened on November 2 and

closed at midnight on November 23, an ICC statement said. The short list was nominated by an elite panel of cricket experts, which is headed by ICC Cricket Committee Chairman and former India captain Anil Kumble. Other members of the panel are England’s Alec Stewart, New Zealand’s Catherine Campbell, Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and South Africa’s Graeme Pollock.

UNEDIN: New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor tamed the toothless West Indies attack on the opening day of the first cricket Test today, both scoring centuries as the home side reached an imposing 367 for three. At close of play McCullum was 109 not out off just 122 balls, with Taylor unbeaten on 103. Hamish Rutherford (62) and Peter Fulton (61) earlier chipped in with half centuries on a dispiriting day for the tourists. New Zealand lost the toss but quickly made the West Indies attack look ordinary despite a green-tinged wicket and cloud cover for much of the day. The cloud cleared at tea, when New Zealand were 194-3, and in the bright sunshine of the final session Taylor and McCullum produced a ruthless display of power batting to press home their advantage. New Zealand’s senior batsmen added a further 173 runs in

the final session, heaping more misery on the tired West Indies attack, ending the day with an unbeaten partnership worth 182. Captain McCullum, who made no secret of his wish to bowl first, was at his aggressive best, bringing up the 300 with a mighty six when he pulled Shannon Gabriel over square leg. The innings was a personal boost for McCullum, who has been suffering from a severe back injury that requires him to use painkillers to take the field. It was his seventh Test century and ended a slump that has affected his game since he notched a personal best of 225 against India three years ago. Taylor, who brought up his ninth century, had one close encounter when on two, rapped on the gloves trying to fend off a Tino Best delivery, with the ball ballooning just over the outstreched arms of second and third slips.

ICC monitors Bangladesh situation ahead of World T20 D

HAKA: The International Cricket Council says it will monitor political violence in Bangladesh ahead of next year’s ICC World Twenty20 in the troubled country but is “happy” for now with arrangements. An ICC official said there would be a “continual review” of planning for the March-April tournament in view of the turmoil that has left dozens of people dead in street protests around the country.“This is a situation that we have to consistently monitor,” Chris Tetley, an ICC event manager, told reporters late Monday after a final inspection of the stadiums in Dhaka and in Fatullah,

just outside the capital. “Security is something we keep discussing. Obviously the things today could be different tomorrow. There will be a continual review of our arrangements against the situation. But at this stage, we are definitely happy,” Tetley said. Asked whether the ICC would shift the tournament to another country if the violence escalated, Tetley said: “It’s difficult to speculate because we don’t know what’s going to happen. “All we can do is continually assess the situation and discuss with the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) and make plans accordingly,” he added.

England bid to halt Aussie Ashes momentum

A

DELAIDE: England face a critical challenge to their four-year Ashes reign in the second Test against Australia starting in Adelaide on Thursday against a re-energised home team looking to drive home their advantage. Alastair Cook’s tourists were swept away by the Mitchell Johnson-inspired home side in the first Test, going down by the enormous margin 381 runs in a match overshadowed by a sledging barrage from Australian captain Michael Clarke. It was England’s first defeat in 14 Tests since losing to India in Ahmedabad a year ago, but another loss in Adelaide could prove an insurmountable blow in their bid to hold on to the Ashes after three successive series wins dating back to 2009. England urgently need to regroup after wilting under Australia’s bowling and verbal barrage in Brisbane, their task made all the more difficult by having to find a replacement at number three following the shock departure of Jonathan Trott with a stressrelated illness.

The choice to fill Trott’s spot is between 94Test veteran Ian Bell and the inexperienced Joe Root, with Zimbabwe-born Gary Ballance likely to slot in at number six after his innings of 55 in Alice Springs in a tour game last week. England batting coach and former Test captain Graham Gooch was pragmatic about whoever is chosen to fill the crucial number three slot. “You’ve got to handle it,” he said. “That’s part of sport. You’ve got to adapt.” England must find a way to cope with the hostile bowling of Johnson, who was man-ofthe-match in Brisbane with a nine-wicket haul, helping dismiss the tourists for 136 and 179. The left-armer is vowing more of the short stuff but will have different bowling conditions on a drop-in pitch as Adelaide Oval undergoes a transformation into a multipurpose stadium. The ground curator said the pitch would offer early spice, prime batting for the five-day duration and reverse swing late in the game. England say they have no problem with Australia’s incessant insults after skipper Clarke was fined by the International Cricket Council for telling England’s Jimmy Anderson to expect a broken arm during the Brisbane Test. “I have absolutely no problem about any of what the Australians were doing on the field,” Anderson wrote in Britain’s Mail on Sunday newspaper. “I probably dish it out more than most in the field, so I generally get it back more than most. I expect it and accept it.” Australian opener Chris Rogers is promising more aggression in Adelaide after the home side won their first Test since beating Sri Lanka in January. “They probably haven’t been challenged like that for a while and to have someone like Mitch (Johnson) bowling that fast is great for us. Perhaps they were a little bit rattled and we can use that for the rest of the series,” he said.
