A biker hit a group of people on the Wadala bridge killing one and injuring some
By Shwetha Kannan
I Great! We must thank Rahul Gandhi for strongly supporting our anti-Congress poll campaign.
OPINIONS
Do you think the new autorickshaw permits for share-routes will reduce congestion? Meghna Kuradia Student Share autorickshaws are cheap and easily available at any point of time, and as students, we prefer travelling to college or to the railway station by sharing autos. This will definitely reduce traffic congestion
Dhanesh Kandhari Businessman There is a hike in fares of taxis and a lot of people travel in crowded BEST buses which works out to the same fare that will be given to a share auto. It is feasible measure to decongest crowded roads. Seema Choudhary PR student It is a welcome move by the traffic authorities, but the fare should be fixed for sharing autos only then there will easing of traffic bottlenecks.
Aiman Khan Gym trainer I agree with the proposal. We are the ones who stand for hours waiting for an auto. More share autos will help people reach their destinations soon. Manisha Jadhwani Event management This is good news for autorickshaw drivers as their income will be enhanced by easing of traffic routes, thereby helping to ease jampacked roads.

rresponsible driving by a wayward biker cost a family the life of one of its members while the others were left worrying over the injuries of their wives and children. In the accident that took place at the Wadala bridge on Wednesday night, 55-year-old Shanta Bapu Waghela lost her life while Ganesh Chekhalia, Himesh Kiran Durgule and Rahul Suresh Khavdia, Reeta Chekhalia, Manisha Durgule and Asha Khavdia have suffered head and leg injuries. Out of the three injured children, Ganesh has the most serious injuries and all the affected family members are praying for the seven-year-old’s recovery. Govind Chekhalia, who is Ganesh’s uncle, is probably the only person there who saw the accident happening. “I was sitting with my son at a distance from the others who were having food when the accident happened. I was waiting for my wife when suddenly a bike came speeding from nowhere and hit Shanta. The impact threw her off and she died on the spot. I ran to help her and as I got close to her, I saw the bike hitting a few others ahead. I did not know what to do. Shanta’s body was totally twisted. Everything happened very quickly. Everybody was helping each other and all of the injured were rushed to the hospital”, said Govind. Shanta Bapu Waghela was Ganesh’s grandmother, informed Govind. Ganesh has suffered severe head injuries and is in the Intensive Care

For Rahul Khavdia’s father, Suresh, his fear turned out to be true when he reached home after hearing about an accident near Wadala bridge from his nephew whom he had bumped into on his way home. “I was on my way home when I met my nephew. He said that there has been an accident at the Wadala bridge and several people have been injured. The moment I heard this, I got scared. I was praying that nothing should have happened to my family. When I reached home, I saw that my family was one of the many that had been affected”, said Suresh. Rahul’s mother Asha who has also suffered some injuries is concerned about her son’s broken leg.
said Asha. (Even I have got hurt, but should I tend to my injuries or my son’s?) Himesh Kiran Durgule (3) has also suffered head injuries and is in the ICU. “Himesh is okay now. He seems normal. But has got stitches on his head”, said Himesh’s father Kiran Durgule. “We got to know about the accident at around 9:30 pm and came rushing to the hospital. Hope my naathu gets well soon. We are also worried about Ganesh. He is seriously injured”, said Himesh’s grandmother, Geeta Durgule. The doctors at the hospital did not give any details apart from confirming the presence of the accident victims in KEM, death of one Rahul’s father Suresh with his younger victim and that the survivors have son, Mehul, at the hospital. suffered injuries to their heads and “Mujhe bhi laga hai par mai apna legs. dukhna dekhu ya apne bache ka”, shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

areas in Mira Road. The ADC had recently published a news article (No Hawking Zone is hawkers’ paradise) highlighting the
ADC IMPACT brazen defiance of hawkers who were conducting their business right under prohibitory warning
signboards which the MBMC had spent Rs. 22.5 lakh to install. “Regular drives will be carried out to flush out illegal hawkers from ‘No Hawking Zones’ earmarked by the civic body,” said Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani. It should be noted that the MBMC has awarded a daily collection contract of Rs.5.34 crore to
four private companies. Although they are supposed to collect daily fees only from vendors operating in hawking zones, the goons hired by the contractors have been defying the regulations by openly extorting money from illegally operating hawkers in the region. “We will take strict action against those defying the rules,“ Kakani added.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013 By Vishnudas Sheshrao
W
hen Babu Jagatap, a conservancy worker attached to G/N ward officer in Dadar, went to his office yesterday, he was not allowed to sign the register. He was served with a notice for breach of official code of conduct and was asked to return home. The letter asked him to vacate the civic quarters in which he was staying with his family, deposit the key in the estate department and only then re-join office. Meanwhile, he will be treated as an employee on leave without pay. The building, located on Phalke Road in Dadar east, is frighteningly dilapidated. Thousands of civic workers like Jagatap, particularly the class III and class IV employees and conservancy staff who stay in dilapidated quarters, were not allowed to sign the registers in their respective ward offices on Thursday and were instead served with a notice of breach of service code and conduct. All these workers have been asked to vacate their existing service quarters, most being in the island city – from Colaba to Mazgaon and Dadar - surrender the flat keys and only then report to work. A few of them have got alternative accommodation, in distant Mahur, Chembur and Mankhurd. The rest have been asked to find their own accommodations. After the collapse of a BMC owned building at Dockyard road last Friday (Sept 27), wherein 61 people died and 30 were injured, the issue of dilapidated buildings has come under intense scrutiny. This may be considered as being too little too late, but the spotlight just refuses to go away, given the number of times this tragedy could be replicated. It was one of the worst building collapses in the recent history. This building was already classified as a C2, meaning that the damage was serious and it needed to be needed to be vacated as soon as possible. However, on account of administrative lapses, pressure was not brought upon the occupants who are always (and understandably reluctant to disrupt the routine of their lives. Seven engineers were suspended immediately after the incident and an inquiry has been set up against another 11 engineers. Taking cognizance of this accident, the officials have pulled up their socks now. Within four days of the tragedy, the civic body has served notices to all the dilapidated

Why staffers or people don’t move out The main reason is that while allocating alternate accommodation, no preference of quarters is taken into consideration for employees. -----------Councilor Mangesh Jamsudkar from Ward -------said, “Those who are working in C-ward, Chandanwadi, have got accommodation in Mahul. Rationally and practically, it is not feasible for them to travel from there”. Another reason is that the civic body takes years to construct buildings and hand over the quarters to employees. One of the three civic buildings at Phalke road, in Ambedkar Nagar, Dadar East, was forcefully vacated nine years ago. Remark Dangerous building, vacate immediately Dangerous part of building needs to be demolished Major structural repairs needed.
C1 - TOO DANGEROUS..... BMC Chawl at Phalke Road, Dadar (East), where the civic staffers were told to vacate the building immediately.
Almost a decade later, even the old structure has not been pulled down and redevelopment is a distant dream. Over the years, this issue was neglected in the civic body. Budget provisions have been made every year for the repair or redevelopment and the increase of the number of quarters for new staffers. However, this did not work out due to multiple issues, including civic staffers’ delay in vacating the buildings, vested interests of senior officials, untrustworthy developers and changing rules. Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Jalota said, “The Dockyard building accident was a very sad incident. As of now, we have C2A - ALSO DANGEROUS... BDD Chawl in Mazgaon. BJP hails verdict on former Bihar CM who was sentenced to five years and a fine of Rs.25 lakh in the fodder scam case
F
ormer Bihar chief minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.25 lakh in a 17-year-old fodder scam case, on Thursday claimed that he was falsely implicated. “Sir, I am innocent. I have been falsely framed in the case,” a subdued Prasad pleaded during a video conference from the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, Bihar to Special CBI Judge Pravas Kumar Singh, who pronounced the quantum of sentence for 37 of the 45 convicts. The video conferencing was held on security grounds, a court official told PTI. Prasad had on September 30 and during his previous appearances claimed that there was a political conspiracy against him. JDU MP Jagdish Sharma also pleaded innocence. With the conclusion of 45 of 53 AHD cases, Prasad still has four more cases against him in the Rs 950 crore scam, which was unearthed during his regime in the 1990s. Yadav has also been accused in RC 38A/96, RC 47A/96, RC 64 A/96 and in another RC case. Meanwhile, the BJP yesterday welcomed the sentencing of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and others in the fodder scam and hoped that there will similar judgements punishing the guilty in cases of “monumental” corruption like 2G spectrum, Coalgate, and Commonwealth Games. “Lalu Prasad, former Congress Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra

BJP feels this is a very important milestone in the fight against corruption. The whole country was up against corruption and wanted results,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told PTI. Welcoming the verdict, BJP said people are now eagerly waiting for judgements on bigger scams. “Commonwealth Games, 2G spectrum and coal allocation scams are cases of monumental corruption and people are waiting for results. Corruption cannot be the
mainstay of politics. People are waiting for the verdicts on these cases,” Javadekar said. Manikrao Thakre, president of Maharashtra Congress: “The law is taking its own course. Lalu Prasad Yadav has the right to appeal against the order in a higher court. The speaker of the Lok Sabha will decide on further action”. Eknath Khadse, leader of opposition in the Legislative Assembly: “This particular order of the court has shown that law catches up with those involved in corruption. here is a mix reaction over the center’s decision to withdraw the controversial Ordinance on lawmakers. BJP and Congress are engaged in a slugfest over the issue accusing each other of changing tunes. The leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Eknath Khadse, said, “It is BJP’s pressure, which has won and it is the opinion of the people of this country, which has won. So it is not the initiative of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. It is the opinion of the Supreme Court, the people and the pressure exerted by the Opposition, which has won”. State Congress president Manikrao Thakre has countered the claim of the BJP. He said, “Initially the BJP agreed to the amendment. However, ever since Rahul Gandhi said that this must be reviewed, the BJP has taken a different line altogether. Of course, nothing new in it, this is very old
style of the BJP, say one thing at one place and say another at another”. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut lambasted Rahul Gandhi and said, “Rahul looks at himself as a remote control. He has put the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the dock, made him out to be an accused. Rahul is not above Parliament. We are opposed to the Ordinance but what happen was highly objectionable.

he Navi Mumbai police have arrested four people from Mumbai in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 25-year-old which took place a month ago. The decomposed body of Mahibul Haque was found last Sunday in an isolated area in Turbhe. Haque, a resident of Wadala, had come to deliver some cosmetics in Vashi and was missing since August 26. Since the police found nothing to suggest that he had gone off on his own, they registered a case of kidnapping on September 8. “The body was found near a bush on Sunday. Haque’s
pain was so excruciating that she was unable to speak,” said Pinky’s mother. Later Pinky gesticulated to her mother to take her to hospital. “As the lift was not working, one of our neighbours carried Pinky down five floors. We rushed her to Mandapeshwar Hospital, where doctors started immediate treatment on her. She was trying to speak but could not manage and died within a few minutes,” she added. “We have lost our girl. We
have no complaints or doubts. But how she can die in minutes without any medical history is shocking,” said a relative. Senior police inspector Narayan Khaire of Borivali police station said, “The post mortem was carried at Bhagwati Hospital where the cause of death was declared as pneumonia. We are also surprised as to how a young girl can die in minutes. We have registered an ADR in the matter.”
4 held for kidnapping, murdering 25-year-old family was then called to Turbhe where they identified him on the basis of the clothes. It has been confirmed that Haque was assaulted with sharp weapons, which lead to his death,” said a Senior Police Inspector, Vashi police station. “A mobile phone was found at the spot and an analysis of the call data gave us the numbers of four per-
sons whom he was constantly in touch with till the day he went missing. Even his family suspected them to be involved. On Tuesday, we arrested them from their residences,” he added. “There was a property dispute amongst the accused and the victim’s family in their native place, Uttar Pradesh. The victim’s family had murdered a man from
the other party a couple of years ago and the accused were looking for a chance to take revenge since then, said Police Inspector Ashok Dewre. The accused were produced before the judicial court and have been remanded to police custody till October 9. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

07 CITY ‘Ragged’ 8-year-old who fled orphanage, found in Virar By Suresh Golani
T
he 8-year-old boy who had mysteriously disappeared from an orphanage in Nalasopara last week, was found sleeping at a pavement in Virar, late on Tuesday night. Identified as Harshad Kamble, the child stayed at an orphanage run by Narayan Chandra Trust in Nalasopara. Harshad had mysteriously disappeared on September 25, prompting the trust management to register a complaint at the Nalasopara police station who filed a kidnapping case against unidentified accused. Even as the police were investigating into the matter, they were informed by their Virar counterparts that a construction worker had found a boy whose description matched that of the missing child. A police team rushed to the spot and took custody of the child who indeed was Harshad Kamble. However, the investigators were shocked to
Harshad Kamble learn that Harshad was not abducted but he himself fled the orphanage following alleged harassment and physical assaults on him by other inmates. “The child seems to be under severe mental depression. While a probe was on to confirm the charges leveled by the child, we will also speak to the orphanage authorities to ascertain the reason as to what prompted the kid to take such a step,“ said an investigating officer.

to track the daily movement of vehicles meant for garbage collection through GPS-enabled mobile handsets, distributed to drivers of these vehicles. Moreover, the system enabled with face recognition software was converted to a modern bio-metric attendance system for the sanitary workers so as to avoid any carelessness or proxyattendance during duty hours. However with the
GIS in a limbo, it’s back to the age old system, where details like the number of rounds made by a particular collection truck and the number of on-duty sanitary personnel are recorded in a manual logbook and later emailed to the civic officials. However, because of its nature, the system is once again vulnerable to manipulation. When contacted Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Sambhaji Panpatte, said, “We have issued a notice to the contractor clearly stating that henceforth payments will not be released until and unless the mandatory GIS rules are followed.” It should be noted that an average of 375 metric tonnes of garbage per day is generated by the twincity which has been divided into four zones. The contractor claims to have deployed 79 compactor vehicles and 1599 sanitary workers for lifting and transporting the garbage to the waste processing plant in Uttan.
Low attendance? Your college may debar you! Continued from pg 1 « a student should have a 75 per cent attendance. Any student with an attendance below 75 per cent wouldn’t be allowed to sit for the exams. Considering the students’ preparations for the exams and various tuitions, most colleges had cut-down the compulsion of attendance to 50 per cent. Madhu Nair, Principal, Nirmala College, said, “Attendance has to be compulsory for students. At times, students just fill in the admission forms and never attend the lectures. According to the rules and regulations, actions have to be taken against the irregular students”. Considering the loss of a year, a few colleges have not allowed their students to appear for those subjects in which they have less than 50 per cent attendance. Recently, around 250 students from Narsee Monjee College in Vile Parle were debarred from the college for low attendance. Colleges have also dropped their students for a semester or year for being irregular. Within the last three months, around 500-600 students have been thrown out of their respective colleges for having poor attendance records. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, said, “Those students who have been debarred, or have got a year’s drop due to attendance are asked to complete their studies through the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), so that they don't waste their year”. yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

Now let us consider some other facts. The Army chief has been charged with setting up a ‘Secret intelligence unit’ and ‘empowered’ it with secret funds. Question: Has a Commander-in-Chief no right to do so? Or why is he a Commander-in-Chief, pray? Look at the word ‘secret’. It is a cheap word suggesting some wrong done. It has been used deliberately to show that the Army chief had done something wrong. Security people maintain ‘secret’ organizations or units and naturally use ‘secret’ funds to discharge some ‘secret’ tasks. That is par for the course. As the US Army.

Either the evidence against the General is cooked up or the government itself is inefficient. In any event bringing a charge against General Singh long after he retired cannot at all be taken seriously.
Manoeuvering the media
Maneuvering the media is easy. Every reporter assigned to a particular ministry or a group of ministries must be aware of the likelihood of stories being planted on him. Every story is not a ‘scoop’. A ‘scoop’ is what the reporter himself finds through long, tedious, hard work. Such scoops are not liked by officials. It is a decent thing for any serious reporter to stay away. He should be careful not to be seen as a lap-dog of a government press officer just to get some silly story of not much consequence. Press officers should be afraid of correspondents and not vice versa. MATTER & SPIRIT
11 LETTERS Thanks to Rahul Gandhi, contentious Ordinance bites the dust
Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013
WITHDRAWAL of the Ordinance of convicted or tainted politicians by UPA govt. in the Parliament is in right direction and timely one. It is Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi whose bold and aggressive statement against the Ordinance of protecting politicians with criminal background being nonsense and must be torn and thrown out which blocked the mistake committed by his government and mood of the people against the Ordinance and spurred immediate action to withdraw the Ordinance in the interest of the people and the nation. I strongly feel that the bold decision taken by the Rahul Gandhi made him most popular national leader in the eyes of the millions of people who want to see such strong personality as the future PM of the country in 2014 general election. With his mission of growth oriented and corrupt free India, Rahul Gandhi has created confidence in the minds of the people who want to see him leading the country leaving behind oldies and other selfish political parties. Well done, Rahul, the whole country is proud of you irrespective of any outcome or embarrassment of the UPA government and the prime minister in particular. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
THIS has reference to the PM’s briefing on board the plane while returning from the US visit. The PM, reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s overt despise over the Ordinance on convicts said that in “democratic polity the issues are discussed”. Public at large are amused that when being questioned by the Rajya Sabha during the discussion on ‘Coal scam’ the
PM left abruptly without answering thus nullifying the discussion right in the ‘Temple of Democracy’. Further, democracy means ‘of, by and for the people’ and it was hardly seen the PM ever interacting with the people or respecting their opinions and problems on inflation, corruption and the need to get back the money from Swiss Banks apart from making India self-sufficient by indigenising state-of-the art equipments by progressive reduction of imports and FDI. The recent Ordinance passed by the Cabinet is perceived to be pro-convicts aimed at quashing the SC Order. Furthermore, the PM maintains ‘silence’ when essential to clarify issues of vital concern. The PM shows keen interest to meet and ‘talk’ to the Pak PM against the public opinion and also closely pursued with the US Govt., to sign nuclear pact and there is no clarity on the compensation to be actually paid to people here in the event of an accident. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai
THIS refers to the report ‘All eyes on Sharad Pawar as ordinance on corrupt netas withdrawn’ (ADC, Oct 3). The Maratha strongman is a senior minister in Dr. Singh’s cabinet and there are a few others too from his NCP and he has attended the meeting which cleared the controversial Ordinance and if he was not agreeable to it, he could have expressed his opinion then and there. As for the haste with which it was pushed through, probably the UPA wanted to send it to the President before the PM went to the United Nations General Assembly and even here he could have advised the government to wait and dis-

That is the beauty of our otherwise third-rate (rank wise and not in a bad sense) politicians. BJP and the Congress generally fight like cocks but become one when their self interest is hurt. RAHUL GANDHI had put his foot in his mouth and turned himself into a clown by protesting against an Ordinance to protect covicted MPs and MLAs that had the approval of his own mother as well as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Yes, corrupt politicians should have no place in politics but the timing of his revolt is questionable. He is trying to appease voters before elections and should have stood up against his party when the Ordinance was being drafted if he was so concerned about it. ONE of the senior General Secretaries of the Congress had also lambasted the Ordinance. But the media gave wide publicity only to the crown prince’s criticism. Instead, a well deserved connectivity to and from Mumbai may be established which will be definitely fruitful for the entire mass. Till now, only builders and developers have minted money fooling the people in the name of the proposed airport. — Laxminarayanan B., Mumbai
Lalu’s conviction a lesson for political crooks THE conviction of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in the multi-crore fodder scam comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s ruling mandating the immediate disqualification of convicted lawmakers and legislators facing jail terms of two year or more. It also comes close on the heels of the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s outbursts against an Ordinance brought by his government to overturn the top court order. Meanwhile, a special CBI court in Ranchi has not only upheld the law of the land but has also restored the faith of the masses in the judicial system by holding former Bihar CM and 44 others guilty of fraudulently withdrawing a whopping Rs.950 crore from the state treasury. The
verdict is a step in the right direction towards decriminalising the
politics and keeping the criminals away from it. It is also a lesson to other politicians who consider power as a means to fulfill their personal greed. — Mohammed Zaid, Mumbai
STRONG MESSAGE: The verdict indicting Lalu Yadav will serve as a warning for other corrupt politicos to think before they commit an offence.
THE conviction of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav by a special CBI court in Ranchi in the 17-year-old fodder scam is a huge setback to the RJD chief. It has put a big question mark on his political career. It would certainly cost Prasad his Parliament seat in wake of the Supreme Court’s judgement ordering the immediate disqualification of the convicted lawmakers. — Sherful Islam, Malad

All about Electromagnetism
The Electric Spark Electricity has made our life comfortable and easy. All our life activities are dependent on electricity. Current in a metallic conductor is due to the flow of free electrons. Flow of electrons constitutes the electric current in a conductor when a potential difference is applied across the ends of a conductor. Electrical circuit is a continuous path consisting of conducting wires and other resistances between the terminals of a battery, along which an electric current flows.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY – 4 & 5 ADC copies are available at Saphale, Palghar, Boisar, Dahanu, Vapi, Silvassa, Daman, Also at Alibaug & Uran Electric circuit is represented by circuit diagram. Electric symbols are used in electrical circuit to represent the various components of a circuit diagram. Flow of electrons is from negative terminal to positive terminal of the cell but the conventional direction of flow of current is from positive terminal to negative terminal of cell. Electric potential: The electric level at a point is called electric potential at that point. Potential difference: The potential difference between two points in an electric field is the amount of work done in moving a unit positive charge from one point to another. Potential difference is represented by letter ‘V’ and the S.I. unit of P.D. is ‘volt’. Small voltages are measured in millivolts and microvolts and large voltages are measured in kilovolts and megavolts. Current in a conductor is measured in ampere ‘A’ and represented by the symbol ‘I’. Small current is measured in milliampere and microampere. Relation between ‘I’ and ‘V’ was given by a German physicist George Simon Ohm. Ohm’s Law: The electric current flowing in a metallic conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its terminals, provided the physical state of the conductor remains constant. i.e V α l. Resistance: The property of the conductor due to which it opposes flow of current through it is called resistance. Resistance (R) =
Potential difference (V) . SI unit of resistance is ohm Ω. Current I
Resistivity: Resistivity of conductor is defined as the resistance of a conductor of unit length and unit area of cross section. Resistivity is the characteristic property of material and is different for different material. The SI unit of resistivity is ohm-meter (Ω-m). Conductors and Insulators: Substances are divided into conductors and insulators on the basis of the resistance of the substance. Conductors: The substances which have low electrical resistance are called conductors eg. Silver, copper, aluminium Insulators : The substances which have infinitely high electrical resistance are called insulators. Eg. Rubber, wood, glass. Resistance in Series : If same current flows through the re-
Resistance in parallel: If potential difference between the resistors is the same then the resistors are said to be connected in parallel. The sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistance is equal to the reciprocal of the equivalent resistor.
1 = 1 + 1 + 1 + …………………+ 1 Rp R1 R2 R3 Rn Heating effect of electric current: When current flows through a metallic conductor the free electrons moving in the wire collide with the atoms of the metal in their path. At each collision, a part of the kinetic energy of electrons converts into heat and the temperature of the conductor increases and the conductor gets heated up. Joule’s Law: The quantity of heat generated (H) in a conductor of resistance (R) when a current (I) flows through it for a time (t) is directly proportional to:
-square of the current. -the resistance of the conductor and -the time for which the current flows. Mathematical expression of Joule’s law: H = l2Rt Joule = l2Rt / 4.18 cal Applications of heating effect of electric current: Electric iron, Electric fuse, Electric bulb Electric Power: is defined as the rate at which electrical energy is consumed. SI unit of electric power is Watt. sistors then the resistors are said to be connected in series. The effective resistance of the combination is equal to the sum of individual resistors. Rs = R1 + R2 + R3 +………………………+ Rn.
P = Work = W = Vit = VI . Time t t Commercial unit of electric power is ‘kWh’ 1 kWh = 3.6 x 106 Joule.
Magnetic lines of force: is the path along which the unit north pole moves in a magnetic field. Properties: The magnetic lines of force are closed continuous curves. They start from north pole and end at south pole. The tangent at any point on the magnetic lines of force gives direction of magnetic field. Magnetic field lines do not intersect each other. They are crowded where the magnetic field is strong. Danish physics Prof. Hans Christian Oersted was the first to prove that electricity and magnetism are a related phenomenon. Magnetic field due to current carrying conductor depends upon the magnitude of the current passing through it and the distance from the conductor. The direction of the magnetic field due to current carrying conductor is given by the right hand rule. Right-Hand Thumb rule: Imagine that you are holding a current carrying straight conductor in your right hand such that the thumb points towards the direction of current, then the curled fingers around the conductor will give the direction of the magnetic field. Solenoid: A coil of many turns of insulated copper wire wrapped in the shape of cylinder is called a solenoid. The solenoid has all the properties of a bar magnet. A current carrying conductor when placed in a magnetic field experiences a force. The direction of the force depends on the direction of the magnetic field and is given by Fleming’s left hand rule. Fleming’s left hand rule : Stretch the forefinger, the central finger and the thumb of your left hand mutually perpendicular to each other. If the forefinger shows the direction of the field and the central finger shows the direction of the current, then the thumb will point towards the direction of the motion of the conductor or the force acting on the conductor.
Electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and works on the principle that a current carrying conductor placed in magnetic field experiences a force.

GIVE A LITTLE BIT
While all of us can’t be philanthropists because of our limited resources, we can still make someone smile by doing our small bit. Priyanka Singh & Dev Goswami nudge you to go ahead and do a little good...
E
very day we see how the world is becoming less and less habitable. Whether it is a 72-year-old man abandoned by his family and left on a lonely, unknown street or a five-year-old girl who is ideally supposed to play with balloons but is instead selling them. While we cannot change the entire world overnight or all on our own, what we can do is change a single human being’s circumstances. Whether it is donating money, helping out NGOs or helping someone in need by just making a phone call to the right helping centre — your seemingly slight contribution will make a massive difference when the dots join. We tell you about charitable initiatives across the city, NGOs you can help and how to take your first small step towards ‘giving’.
EVENTS From sales to events and collections, there’s a lot happening over the next two weeks where you can do your bit towards a good cause:
Helping Hand: Helping Hand is an initiative by Madhavi Goenka which aims to raise funds to help accommodate children who come to the city for cancer treatment. Many of these children often have to leave the city because they can’t find affordable housing for the duration of their stay. This initiative provides such children with free stay, so that they can continue their treatment. This coming Monday, Helping Hand is organising a shopping event which includes brands such as Palak Seth (Jadau Jewelry Designer), Advika Design Studio (personalised stationery and gift items), Kunal Tanna (men’s designer; worked with Manish Malhotra), Saroj Rateria (fine silver for home) and Ammetrine (designer wear from Hyderabad) to help raise funds this. Tell us about your character in the movie Besharam. Besharam’s story is about two best friends Babli (Ranbir) and Titu (Amitosh). I play Titu, an enthu-cutlet. Babli and Titu are both orphans who have grown up together. They steal cars for survival. Whatever money they earn after selling cars, they give to the orphanage where they lived, Robin Hood style. Our characters are besharam (shameless) to the extent that we even had to shoot intimate scenes with each other. Besharam has already garnered attention as it’s the first movie where the Kapoor family comes together on screen. How was it working with Rishi, Neetu and Ranbir Kapoor? As a kid, I loved watching Neetu ma’am and Rishi sir on screen, so working with them was a dream come true. With their family on set, it didn't feel like coming for a movie shoot, but more like visiting their home. The set became so homely, that at times we forgot that we were working.

istory buffs, this one’s for you. Get ready to dive into the world of Pompeii with NCPA’s collaboration with London’s British Museum. A special film, titled Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, will be screened to help you learn more about the history behind it. The film is about Pompeii and Herculaneum, two cities on the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy, that were buried by a volcanic eruption. The reason it’s so interesting is that even though the tragedy ended the lives of the people of two entire cities, the way it erupted also helped preserve their remains for archaeologists to discover. The excavation of the cities isn’t complete, but archaeologists have uncovered several fascinating artifacts. Chairman of the NCPA, Khushroo N. Suntook tells us, “The Pompeii Exhibition at the British Museum is staggering. The film should interest not only those who know about Pompeii, but also those who are generally curious. We are honoured that special guest speaker Paul Roberts, is visiting and I urge everyone to attend this unique screening.” Head of programming of theatre and films, Deepa Gahlot adds, “It is our privilege to be associated with the British Museum for this incredibly

Tell us where your interest in different aspects of filmmaking stems from? I feel that an actor should know all the facets of filmmaking; it makes him better equipped to give his best. If you were to choose one role, which one would it be? I love experimenting and playing new characters. I have played comic roles, serious characters and I am open to playing negative roles too.
You’ve also been associated with plays and have staged Piya Behrupia. What do you have to say about the theatre scene in Mumbai? Piya Behrupiya is an Indian rendition of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. You must catch it at Prithvi. The response has been great! Mumbai’s theatre scene is independent and interesting. Even though there are space constraints, we get what every theatre artist needs — freedom to perform how we want to and acceptance. The Hindi film industry is often labelled as tough to get into. What has your experience been like so far? I didn’t find it very tough but it wasn’t easy either. Once you get your first break, this industry welcomes you with an open heart. Good work is always recognised. People will recommend you if you are good. Entertaining people is not an easy job but it has definitely been a rewarding journey for me. From being a lyricist for the movie Oye Lucky Lucky Oye to lyric writing, singing and acting in Besharam! The industry recognises and appreciates talent. What’s next for you? I am almost done writing dialogues for two films. One of them is Gulabgang with Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla. I am acting in an independent Hollywood movie For Here Or To Go. I am also writing the story, screenplay and dialogues for Makbool and writing a script for Shomit Sen's next, film, Phirki.

Artists Rini Dhumal and Seema Kohli have come together for the first time to create Stories of Invocation. As the title indicates, Stories of Invocation are beautiful narratives on canvas depicting the power of faith. The show starts on the first day of ‘Navratri’ which is a time to praise the female divinity. Speaking about the show, Seema says, “The season that begins with the Navratras celebrates the diversity of everything we associate with womankind. My canvases for this collection celebrate not only all that is feminine, but also the power of faith — faith in the divine, faith in oneself, faith in feminine and faith in divine energy. It is only the power of faith that can keep us positive in the rigours and stress of today’s world.” When October 5 to 15 Where The View, Annie Besant Road, Worli Contact 24918686

Lifestyle store AA Living is helping you celebrate the festive season with a new range of furniture called Juxtaposition. The store is having a show of classic furniture and collectibles and will also give you the opportunity to view sculptures by Parisian artist, Guillermo Forchino. The sculptures and accompanying stories show a deep understanding of subjects and their real-life frailties. Prices of the vintage furniture are on request and include trunks, tables and boxes and more. “Using the exaggerations of caricature, this comic sculptor magnifies our flaws to create humorous characters that we can all recognise and see something of ourselves in. It’s reminiscent of the luggage workshops of early 19th century. We especially love the functionality of these pieces where you can add drawers, wooden shelves and wine glass holders to transform the trunks. These cherry wood pieces are beautiful conversation pieces when added to a living room and guaranteed to increase in value over time,” says Rohina Anand of AA Living. ‘24 is an adaptation not a translation’
Filmmaker Abhinay Deo, who directed films such as Delhi Belly and Game, is now helming 24 episodes for the first season of the Indian version of international series 24. The director will release the movies only once the thriller starring Anil Kapoor concludes. Rohit Pramar caught up with the director to talk the show and more… How different is the Indian version from the American version of the show? Obviously the format is the same and it has the same season storyline but apart from that, everything about the show is different. Those who have followed the American version will get to see a totally different setting as the political and geological factors are different. All the punch lines of the show have been changed and replaced with new ones. There’s a lot of Indianness in the show. It is an adaption and not a translation. So, you will get to see a lot of new stuff. What was it like working with a senior actor like Anil Kapoor? It is just amazing. I think he is one of the most dedicated and hardworking actors in India today. He is an actor’s director; you can mold him into anything. He was always there whenever I needed him on set. Since the character is pretty intense and sensitive, he has adapted it really well. He is just incredible in the show. It was a pleasure to work with him. Presently, mythological and family drama shows tend to rule television. Do you think 24 will change that? Just because something is working doesn’t mean that the rest won’t work. The audience is ready for both. So, there is an audience for 24. I think it was just a matter of time before someone decided to make it. Do you follow any TV shows and which ones are your favourite? I do not really follow Indian daily soaps. F.R.I.E.N.D.S is my all time favourite. I also enjoy Game Of Thrones. My other favourite is Breaking Bad, I think it’s a phenomenal show. Will you be directing the second season too? It’s upto the channel to take a call but I will be creatively heading the season as well. It also depends if my schedule is free. After 24, I’m supposed to start work on a feature film. Can you tell us about your feature film? I think it’s too early to say anything since I don’t know which one will see the light. I have three scripts at the moment and I am in a process of developing them all. All the films have different elements and characters. What genre are they? One of the films that I am doing is a buddy film. The other is a children's film in which the protagonist is a kid. The third one is a love story and it’s a feel good film. I always like to experiment and try new things. My next film is going to be very different. *24 will air on Colors TV, every Friday and Saturday at 10 pm, from October 4 onwards.
>> Abhinay Deo tells us that while his new show, 24, starring Anil Kapoor (top) is similar to the international version, it has been Indianised a lot and we will be treated to several surprises. He also worked alongside Anita Raj (right) and Shabana Azmi (bottom)

Dev Goswami tells you why you should visit Levo in Andheri this weekend
B
efore we visited Levo, we checked out their menu online. It seemed like a normal European style restaurant with a few unique smatterings. So, I was expecting a nice meal in a nice restaurant. But, my actual experience surpassed my expectations! Here’s why… The resto-lounge is quite big and they have a large al-fresco area as well as a banquet hall that can accommodate 200 people. This kind of space is a luxury in cramped Mumbai. We decided to sit in their fine dining section where Chef Rajeev Arora greeted us. Rajeev’s a heavyweight in the food industry with over two decades of experience and multiple awards under his chef’s hat. He’s even fed Bill Clinton! We started our evening with three mocktails — the Levo Cooler, Cinnamon Cooler and the Thai Cooler (all `250). The Levo Cooler was a refreshing drink, while the Cinnamon Cooler was sweet with strong hints of cinnamon. The Thai Cooler had a heavy dose of basil that was pleasing. We started our dinner with Over Rusted Plum Tomato Soup (`200) which was served in a cute teacup with a cheese crostini — a great start to our meal. Next came the Sambuca Prawns (`500) which is a staff favourite. And after a few mouthfuls, it became one of ours too. The garlicy prawns combined with the slight sweetness of the Sambuca sauce went on to define our experience at Levo. Levo is worth visiting for this dish alone. We then tried bite-sized portions of Pizza Diavola (`550) and BBQ Chicken Pizza (`450), both of which were good — I quite liked the fact that the BBQ Chicken Pizza had the right amount of sweetness of barbecue sauce. For the main course, we ordered the Mushroom Risotto (`550) and Lamb Navarin Printanier (`850). Though I’m not fond of risotto, I quite liked the risotto which had juicy porcini mushrooms served with gorgonzola and mascarpone cheese that made the dish a creamy delight. But, it was the lamb that had me licking my fingers (metaphorically — I was using a fork). The New Zealand lamb was cooked to perfection and the vegetable stew served alongside was just right. A faultless meal in my opinion. Considering our dishes had been so delightful, it was hardly surprising that our spoons effortlessly scooped up the Chocolate Decadence (`290). It is aptly named, for the moist, melt-in-your mouth cake was truly a luxurious indulgence. Their Chilly Icecream (`250) is also a must-try. Our experience at Levo was fantastic. And while every dish was unique, it’s the Sambuca Prawns that I’ll be coming back for soon.
N
>> (Top to bottom) The Sambuca Prawns is one the best entrées we’ve had, the Cinnamon Cooler had strong hints of cinnamon, the BBQ Chicken Pizza is a delight because of the authentic BBQ flavours while the super-soft and moist Chocolate Decadence is worth every rupee
oodle Town is a small outlet at Carter Road, in the same line as Cocoberry, that opened its shutters two weeks ago. Its yellow interiors with sunny tables and chairs with red upholstery makes this eatery hard to miss. As the name suggests, on offer you’ll get variety of noodle recipes (all of them Indianised) with instant noodles (Maggi) as their main ingredient. The menu is limited, but manages to include all the popular flavours that Indians enjoy their noodles with. They have six varieties of noodle dishes: Punjabi Tadka, Schezwan, Manchurian, Pasta Arabiatta, Thai Red Curry and the Noodle Town Special. Apart from this, they also have chicken tikka noodles and boiled egg/omelette noodles. You can also add paneer, egg and chicken to your order. We ordered for a vegetarian Noodle Town Special (`80) and Thai Red Curry Noodles with chicken (`100). The Noodle Town Special noodles had a mix of cheese sauce, Schezwan sauce and Hariyali sauce, with vegetables such as capsicum, carrot and baby corn thrown in. Served in a thermocol bowl, the quantity was good enough for one with a moderate to large appetite. The dish, spicier than we expected (the menu said it’s mildly spiced; it is not), was a tasty twist to instant noodles and we enjoyed it a lot. On the other hand, the Thai Red Curry Noodles, faded in comparison to its vegetarian cousin. While they were generous with the chicken pieces, the flavour was quite bland. Noodle Town is planning to introduce some more varieties soon. You might think that this can be a hot spot for a quick meal, but they take a good 20 minutes to make the noodles! Reasonably priced (the costliest combination going up to `100), this outlet will be popular with college kids and on days when you just want to gorge on some Maggi, albeit with a twist. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (October 4, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:
The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (October 03, 2013) a net 129.65 points (2.24%) and closed at the 5909 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5819 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 5802 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 5917 points level at 3.06 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 115 points level and closed above the psychologically important 5900 points level. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 21.71%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 876 were gainers, 465 were losers and 67 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has exited the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal).
RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength. Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 5828) Positive. Has crossed above its 15-day average (at 5881) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 5752) Positive. Has crossed above its 200-day average (at 5840) Positive.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6123 points level. The next resistance is at the 6223 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5877 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5836. Support (2) = 5762. Resistance (1) = 5951. Resistance (2) = 5992.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index af ter having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday’s candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. Thi s is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above the 5, 15 and 200 days moving averages in a single session. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were negatively trended have now turned neutral. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Technically, s inc e the downwards risk seems to have reduced, Investors may consider buying in small quantities in shares that are fundamentally sound and have a long- term potential.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5692 points level. The next support is at the 5561 points level.

Britannia Industries enjoys the key position in the branded biscuit category where the company enjoys 1/3rd or around 33% market share in the biscuits market size of $2.2 bn branded biscuits category in India. Britannia’s profitability was continuously under pressure with lower EBITDA margin. Britannia operating margin were in the range of 5%-7% in last five year though the sales growth were reasonable over 16% CAGR. In last two quarter we have witnessed substantial margin expansion with 8.9% and 9.2% in Q4FY13 and Q1FY14 respectively. According to management, the margin expansion is driven by companies focused efforts to drive efficiencies in back-end through cost management program, premiumization trend in market, improvement in the product mix towards high value-added products and price increase taken by company. At the consolidated level, the company’s large subsidiaries are in Dubai (SFIC), Oman (Al Sallan) and in India (Britannia Dairy). Both Al Sallan and Dairy business turned profitable in FY12. We expect profitability of the dairy business to improve even further. With a new CEO at the helm we expect the company to continue to improve its performance. Further, the management has guided that the company is likely to benefit from stable food prices on account of good rainfall this year and will help it to maintain or improve the expanded margin. Further, Britannia has defined its manufacturing strategy where it’s increasing its reach to the consumption markets through in-house manufacturing especially for its premium products. The management aims to push up the proportion of inhoused manufacturing from the current 45% to 65% in the next few years. We are of the view that this strategy will improve sales, and margins going forward. Company will drive the growth by further penetrating in rural market which will counter the slowdown in urban market. We believe that, Britannia appears to have hit a sweet spot in its strategy of using price hikes and a richer product mix (new and premium products) to combat rising costs. Britannia’s focused effort to drive efficiencies in back-end through cost management programme is yielding benefits. At CMP of Rs. 824, stock is trading at 23.3x and 18.6x PE for FY14E and FY15E respectively. Britannia trades at 15-25% discount to listed peers ITC, Nestle, Marico & GSK Consumer, largely due to low operating margin. However, due to ongoing structural changes in company’s revenue and product mix, the operating margin will improve and this discount could narrow down gradually. Britannia enjoys strong operating cash flows, consistent dividend payouts and healthy return ratios. We recommend BUY with TP of Rs. 1061 (FY15E PE 24x).

We wonder is she is now gearing up for a biopic on a swimmer.

Durga Jasraj on a musical mission was invited purely on merit by the I & B Ministry, it was an honour for me. Kumar, and a family feud begins. I enjoy the journey of romantic characters and this character has a wonderful one.
Your bikini clad pictures have caused a furor. Do you have anything to say about people’s reactions? It’s rather silly in this age of the internet for people to react this way. The photographs are not cheap but aesthetically shot and picturised by director Anthony D’Souza. It’s not like if you accept to wear a bikini in a film, you are bound to bag it. What was it like working with Akshay Kumar? He is always making others laugh on the sets with his jokes and pranks, but in front of the camera he is serious. However, he made me really comfortable. What about Mithun and Danny? They are amazingly co-operative. I have always been huge fans of both. Danny sir used to talk to me about the Vippasana form of meditation.
Did being a trained dancer help? Yes, it did. Dance is a form of acting and it helped me immensely during the shoot.
Are you satisfied with what you have? I thank God for giving me such films and my career, and I will always remain the person I am.
Sonakshi learns folk dance for Bullett Raja T
he gorgeous Sonakshi Sinha has always charmed the audience with her simplicity and is back with Bullett Raja, to woo her fans. This time, she will be seen as a Boengali beauty and has left no stone unturned for her role in the film. We here that she will be seen performing a Bengali folk dance called ‘Jhumur’. She will be portrayed as a typical Bengali woman with the quintessential red bordered saree, a big red bindi, flowers in her hair and alta on her hands. When asked about the look Sonakshi said, “This is for the second time that I am playing a Bengali girl. I have played a Bengali in Lootera, but that was drastically different. I was a 1950s Bengali girl, the daughter of a Zamindar. In Bullett Raja, however, I am playing a contemporary Bengali girl. I loved my look and I wished the sequence we shot in the costume was a little longer, because I did not want to get out of it.” About the traditional dance, she added, “Jhumur is a beautiful feminine traditional dance, and Brinda ma’am being so good at what she does, taught me really well.” Releasing on November 29, Bullett Raja is premised on a fictional mafia based in Uttar Pradesh starring Saif Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill, Vidyut Jamwal, Gulshan Grover, Raj Babbar and Chunky Pandey.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot ugly controversy broke out over the choice of The Good Road over The Lunchbox as India’s official entry for the Oscars – a war of accusations and counter-accusations fought through social media and the press. The success of a film as crude and depraved as Grand Masti was disheartening, particularly when it looked like mainstream Bollywood was aspiring to higher standards. Close on its heels came the crass Besharam, starring IT boy Ranbir Kapoor, whose choice of films so far has been impeccable. A lot was expected from Abhinav Kashyap, director of Dabangg, but his film turned out to be a big letdown. So eagerly awaited was this film, that no other major release was scheduled a week before and after, which might turn to be the reason why Besharam makes money. Films like Warning, Mazii and Prague were hardly expected to last through the week.

Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor in Besharam. The other disappointment turned out to be Rajkumar Santoshi’s Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, from which Shahid Kapoor had great hopes, since his career has been a bit thanda of late. If a director has to fall back on his own past successes to fuel the new film, it’s a sure sign of trouble. But this film still had some redeeming points — the unmitigated disaster of the quarter turned was Zanjeer, an awful remake of Prakash Mehra’s cult hit by Apoorva Lakhia. Southern star Ram Charan’s Hindi debut was a dud. Fresh and perky was Maneesh Sharma’s look at modern-day love and commitment phobia — Shuddh Desi Romance. Prakash Jha’s Satyagrah was fiery and topical even if it didn’t quite hit the spot. Also picking ideas from real life were Shoojit Sircar’s political thriller Madras Café, Milan
T had been reported some time ago that Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana will be coming together for the very first time for a YRF flick to be directed by Nupur Asthana and now, we have learned that the film will be titled Bewakoofiyan. While talking about how the title was chosen, Nupur revealed that they had started shooting for the film without thinking of any name for it. However, it was when music composer Raghu Dixit made her hear the song Bewakoofiyan that the team decided that the name was apt for the film. Bewakoofiyan also stars Rishi Kapoor and the film is a funny love story set against the backdrop of the economic recession.
Chennai Express to release in Egypt A
FTER the political turmoil that affected the people of Egypt, there is some good news for them. Indian films are all set to release in the country starting off with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express. Commenting on the release, Amrita Pandey, Executive Director, Syndication, International distribution, Disney Media Distribution - Studios, Disney UTV says, “Chennai Express has found phenomenal success across International markets, but what is really great is to see it find resonance and wide releases in non-traditional territories. Adding to the list which includes Peru, Morocco, Israel, France and Germany is Egypt. The film released on October 2, in Cairo and Alexandria across 10 screens. We are excited about this and hope that the film performs well in Egypt as it has in other such territories”. India were 215 runs behind West Indies A and require another 66 runs to avoid follow-on at the Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering Cricket grounds. The capacity crowd -- mostly engineering students were left high and dry by the Delhi duo Sehwag and Gambhir, who not only disappointed fans but also didn't make a case for the two national selectors Roger Binny and Saba Karim, who have come to especially watch the senior players. Gambhir didn't look comfortable at all against seamer Miguel Cummins as he struggled for 43 balls with just a boundary to his name. "Hope I can play for the country for such a long span as Sachin (Tendulkar) has and remain as fit as he is. His fitness level is amazing. If I can achieve 60-70 per cent of what he has achieved so far in his career, I will be more than happy," said Kohli. "His hardwork is very inspiring for the younger generation," he told reporters at a function where his endorsement deal with the leading sportswear brand, Adidas was announced here. Replying to a query, Kohli said South African speedsters -Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel -were the two most dangerous bowlers he has faced in his international career so far. On his preparation for the upcoming limited-overs series against Australia, Kohli said the hosts would not be taking their opposition lightly and remained upbeat about winning. "The Australia series is going to be competitive. Even without injured Michael Clarke, they are a strong side. But I am confident about winning the series," the 24-year-old said. Kohli said that the highprofile series might see some verbal duels between the players of the two sides as the young Indians are capable of giving it back to the Aussies in equal measure. "We will reply from the bat first. We will play competitive cricket. The current lot doesn't like to listen too much. We will definitely get back at them," he insisted.

Janaki wins Laser 4.7 class HENNAI: Day 2 of the India International Regatta 2013 proved good for the Indians in the Laser 4.7 class as TNSA’s Janaki Balachander who has just outgrown the Optimist, won the race beating experienced sailors like Upamanyu who finished second and Dheer Singhi who finished third. Dheer Singhi leads the Laser 4.7 fleet overall now while Janaki got ahead of Nethra who was leading among the girls yesterday. Despite the day being grey and gloomy causing apprehension to all concerned,
the day proved to be very difficult for officials and sailors alike with wildly shifting and low winds necessitating shifting of the marks repeatedly. In the 29er class New Zealand sailors Markus and Isaac led initially, however, the Slovenian siblings Peter Lin and Lea Dora caught up in the second loop and won the race and the Kiwis ended up second with Netherlands sailors following them in the third position. Ganapathy and Varun finished 4th and retained their 2nd position overall. Janaki Balachander who finished first in the Laser 4.7 race today

EW DELHI: Ace Indian archer Deepika Kumari crashed out of the World Championships as India’s campaign in both recurve and compound individual events ended today on a disappointing note at Belek in Turkey. None of the Indian archers, except Rajat Chauhan in men’s compound event, could go beyond the Round of 16 in the individual events in the men’s and women’s sections. The Indians though are in the fray in the team events. India’s best bet for a medal, Deepika suffered a disappointing 2-6 loss to Mexico’s London Olympics bronze medallist Mariana Avitia in the women’s individual recurve event. Deepika, who had won a silver in the World Cup final in Paris last month, was able to tie her opponent in the second fourth sets but lost the first and third to go down

D’Souza heroics takes PJ ‘Oceans Seven’ into quarters

UMBAI: Former state junior champion Rovin D’Souza snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the crucial fourth singles tie to lead PJ Hindu Gymkhana ‘Oceans Seven’ into the quarter-finals, in the BSAM World Zoroastrian Organisation Trust Mumbai Snooker League 2013, at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana. After winning the opening singles tie through D’Souza, former champions ‘Oceans Seven’, the only unbeaten team in the league, were forced to rely on the young cueist again in the fourth outing, after Ronnie Daruwalla and Chirag Mehta lost the second doubles tie against NSCI ‘Wolverines’.
Kartik Jhaveri gave ‘Oceans Seven’ a significant 2-1 lead and the favourites relied on D’Souza to do the rest. But D’Souza was staring at defeat while trailing by a huge margin against an in-form Karan Chugh. Behind by a significant 40 points with only a solitary red and the colours remaining, D’Souza was offered hope when Chugh, leading 7636,committed a foul. D’Souza seized the opportunity and took advantage of a free-ball to pot the red and the yellow. He went on to pot green to blue to narrow the margin to 70-76, until Chugh needed just the pink for victory. Needing the pink and the black, D’Souza fired a stunning long and difficult pullback on the pink for a precise position on the black that was the shot of the day, and snatched the tie.

RANKFURT: Bayern Munich and Real Madrid produced dominant performances in the Champions League as the likes of Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo found the net on a good night for Europe's top forwards. Robben helped Bayern outclass Manchester City 3-1 away, a demonstration that Bayern's defense of the title is right on track with two wins from two games. "We controlled the match and that is important in the Champions League," Bayern's coach Pep Guardiola said. Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria scored two goals each for Real Madrid in a 4-0 rout of Copenhagen, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic notched a brace for Paris SaintGermain in a 3-0 demolition of Benfica. They were all outdone by Kostas Mitroglou, who scored a hat trick to lead Olympiakos to a 30 victory at Anderlecht. Manchester United was held to a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk, while City's former coach Roberto Mancini steered Galatasaray to a 2-2 draw at Juventus, just two days after taking charge of the Turkish side. Ronaldo's two goals against Copenhagen raised his total for two games to five, following a hat trick in a 6-1 win at Galatasaray on the opening matchday. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he was pleased with the game, saying it had a good beginning, intensity and balance. "We tried to carry on scoring
right into the last minutes, there was a good attitude in the team." Copenhagen coach Stale Solbakken praised Ronaldo, saying: "He is the man of the match with his two goals." With 10 goals in two matches and six points Real is firmly in control of Group B, ahead of Juventus with two points. Juventus nearly picked up all three points on the night when substitute Fabio Quagliarella made it 2-1 with an 87th minute header -- only for Didier Drogba, who had earlier put the Turkish side in front, to find Umut Bulut for an immediate equaliser. Bayern also has a perfect record at the top of Group D, while CSKA Moscow pulled level with City on three points with a 3-2 victory over Viktoria Plzen, with Zoran Tosic scoring one goal and setting up another. Bayern took a 1-0 halftime lead after City goalkeeper Joe Hart let Franck Ribery's shot slip through his grasp in the seventh minute, before Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben piled on the misery with goals in a four-minute span just before the hour. On a sobering night for City, substitute Alvaro Negredo grabbed a 79th-minute consolation before Bayern had defender Jerome Boateng sent off for a professional foul on Yaya Toure with four minutes left. United stayed true to its stuttering start in its first season after Alex Ferguson by conceding a late equalizer in Donetsk.

The 40-year-old, who last played on the Asian Tour at the 2010 Hero Indian Open, said: "I'm just excited to come back to Asia to play again and see some faces I haven't seen in a while. SACHIN TENDULKAR NOT OUT, SAYS BOARD BCCI rubbishes report about Tendulkar being asked to retire M
UMBAI: Rubbishing reports that Sachin Tendulkar has been asked by the BCCI to retire after his 200th Test, the Board's Secretary Sanjay Patel today said it was the senior batsman's prerogative to decide on his future. "That is absolutely absurd and rubbish. Let me tell you, it will be the prerogative of Mr Sachin Tendulkar. Board has not talked or asked him to resign (retire) and the Board is never going to do it because he is such a great player," BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told reporters here. Patel was reacting to media reports that quite a few Board members were of the opinion that the record-setting batsman was past his prime and chould be told to call it a day after he completes his landmark 200th Test appearance, against the visiting West Indies next month. The Windies are to play two Tests and three ODIs during their visit and the 40-year-old Tendulkar has played 198 Tests. "We appreciate the concern (from media) about this. But I ask
my good media friends, please refrain (from speculating) and from going (ahead reporting) with such wrong details," Patel said. The BCCI Secretary put the onus entirely on Tendulkar and the five-man selection panel about his cricketing future. "It is entirely up to Sachin Tendulkar and selectors. The selectors should (choose to) pick him and Sachin Tendulkar should be ready to play. Board is very happy with whatever (decision) Sachin Tendulkar is taking of his own free will," Patel elaborated.

BCCI HAPPY WITH PRICE IT GOT FOR SERIES TITLE SPONSORSHIP There was just one bidder in fray and the sponsorship rights went for the base price but the BCCI today said it was happy with the deal it struck with Star India Pvt Ltd and ESPN for all 13 home international fixtures till March 2014 considering the difficult economic times. The BCCI awarded the title sponsorship for all international series and domestic tournaments in India for the year 2013-14 to Star Private and ESPN Software at the base price of Rs 2 crore per fixture, almost Rs 1.5 crore less when compared to their previous deal with Airtel. "The market situation is such that at one point of time we thought it will be very difficult to get the sponsorship considering the turmoil in the financial market. But we are very happy (with price)," Board Secretary Sanjay Patel told reporters after the BCCI's Marketing Committee meeting here.
BCCI NOT HAPPY WITH EXCHIEF MANOHAR'S ACTION The BCCI took strong exception to former President Shashank Manohar's attempt to get his name expunged from the legal cases against the Board with Secretary Sanjay Patel saying that the move amounts to shirking responsibility. "There was no question of affidavit (filed by Manohar in the Bombay Hight Court) being discussed. But (what was discussed) was the case fought by Shashank Manohar in his individual way (capacity) leaving aside the other office bearers and the employees of BCCI. That thing was discussed. Members were not happy with the kind of thing that has happened," Patel said here. "BCCI rules and regulations and memorandum is very clear. The Board is functioning under the superintendence (authority) of the president," he added.
SYDNEY: Australian captain Michael Clarke has admitted he may not be fit for the first Ashes Test against England next month, with his longstanding back problem needing extended treatment and rest. Clarke was ruled out of Australia's one-day tour of India this month and while desperate to be ready for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on November 21, the star batsman is pragmatic. "Where I sit right now is I don't know when I'll be back playing cricket," he said. "We have no idea how long it's going to take. There's certainly no guarantee (for the first Test) at this stage. It's hard for me to say that because I'm trying my best not to look at it like that. I'm always positive and if they ask me, I'll say I'll be fit in a week's time. But you ask Alex (Kountouris, team physio) who knows me very well, and he'd say there'd be doubt I won't be right."
SA consider franchise ‘quotas’, to include two blacks in every team
CAPE TOWN: South African cricket officials are set to consider a proposal forcing professional franchises to include at least two black Africans in every team. Another item expected to be discussed at an October 11 Cricket South Africa (CSA) meeting will be the need for second-tier, semi-professional provincial sides to select three black Africans. CSA have not commented officially on the proposals, but an official who attended recent transformation talks told AFP both issues would be debated. While the six top-tier franchises have picked numerous mixed-race or Asian-origin cricketers in recent seasons, there has been a dearth of black Africans on view. Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini carried the black African banner in the Test, one-day international (ODI) and Twenty20 (T20) teams for many seasons. Since Ntini retired two years ago, black African fastmedium bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe has been in and out of Proteas teams in various formats.

ONDON: Former Manchester United manager [inset] Alex Ferguson has said that his onetime star midfielder David Beckham had "lost focus" following his marriage to pop star Victoria Adams of the Spice Girls. Ferguson, who retired as United manager at the end of last season following a trophy-laden stint of nearly 27 years in charge at Old Trafford, oversaw the early year of football icon Beckham's career. But relations between the pair became increasingly icy with Beckham, who would become England's mostcapped outfield player, leaving United in 2003 to join Spanish giants Real Madrid. Ferguson, in an interview with US television network PBS, a transcript of which was carried on the website of Britain's Times newspaper on Wednesday, said Beckham and his wife saw a change in their "celebrity status" after marrying and expressed astonishment at the player's later decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy, then little known outside the United States, in 2007. "As a young kid when I got him at 12 years of age his great desire was (to play) some of the best football," Ferguson said. "He was a fantastic trainer, practised all the time. At night-time he would come by with the schoolboys and practise with them. And he was in that collection. And
then of course, his life changed, when he married the girl (Adams) from The Spice Girls, yeah. And his focus changed," the Scot added. "He got drawn into the -- that celebrity status, you know? And for me, I'm a football man. I'm a football man. He lost the focus. And when we sold him to Real Madrid, he did well." Beckham won one La Liga title in four years with Real before moving to the United States. "I couldn't believe that he goes to LA Galaxy," said Ferguson. "I couldn't believe that. I couldn't understand that. I would never do that, you know? If I was going to go, I would be making sure he would go to the best, and Real Madrid was the best, I would say, and United." However, an admiring Ferguson

also said: "But he reinvented himself. He goes and plays for the English national team for a couple more years. He goes and plays for AC Milan (in the) European Cup. He's unbelievable. He really is -- and good, well done to him. You can't argue with the status he has in life." Beckham retired from playing football professionally aged 38 at the end of last season following a brief spell with France's Paris St Germain. Ferguson said he wished Beckham, whose stellar celebrity -- unlike that of previous globally-known footballers such as Brazil's Pele or Argentina's Diego Maradona -- was far in excess of his ability, had become a truly great player but could not argue with the life he'd made for himself. "Well, for me, it would have pleased me more to see him be a great, great player, you know?" Ferguson added. "As I said, I'm a football man. But how can I argue with life? He's an icon for young people... And represents himself the proper way. And I say well done. Amazing boy, yeah. I mean, how he has created himself. He's fantastic. Wonderful boy."
