he four men accused in the Shakti Mills photojournalist gang-rape case were successfully found guilty by a Mumbai Sessions Court thanks to the dedicated work of the state-run Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). The prosecution primarily relied on the forensic evidence analysed by the FSL team as there were no eyewitnesses to the incident. The forensics team gathered 22 DNA samples from the victim's clothes and body and also from her dupatta which they recovered from the crime scene. Mobile phone records and finger prints on the broken beer bottle used to threaten the victim were traced back to the Continued on pg 8 «

hird time member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam, who is contesting elections from North Mumbai held a day long Padyatra at Borivali yesterday. Nirupam was evasive when asked to address issues of corruption in the Congress and of redevelopment in his constituency, and chose instead to speak of the opposition.“There are three corrupt ministers in Modi's cabinet. Only BJP is making a propaganda saying that Congress is a corrupt party. Not everyone is saying that.” When asked about his efforts in bringing in big ticket projects to his constituency in the past five years, he evaded the question. Instead he spoke of former BJP MLA Ram Naik, “He represented them for almost 25 years, what big project did he bring?” He went on to talk about his new manifesto, emphasizing on what he termed as the most important developments. These include a 24 hour toll free helpline for any woman, student or elderly citizen and water booth installations on a large scale. He also promised a gas connection in each society within the next five years, mentioning that Gorai and Charkop will avail the services in six months itself. The rally saw a jubilant crowd,
Sanjay Nirupam, Congress whose supporters stopped to burst crackers . Nirupam made it a point to greet everyone personally – he stopped at several shops and households – but he did not make conversation with anyone or speak about his new manifesto to the crowd. There appears to be a mild dissension within the Congress party as certain members felt that they were not given an opportunity to represent their concerns freely.

A
t about 4 pm yesterday, a crowd gathered at Rahul Cooperative Society, Malad West, for something they were clueless about, “Chai pe charcha.” “I have no clue why we are here. She asked me to come,” said a resident pointing towards a woman who she said was a Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) supporter. That was the scene at BJP candidate Gopal Shetty's election rally held in Malad West yesterday. Looking extremely confident, with his party members flanking him, Shetty arrived 40 minutes late at the venue. But before he started addressing questions, he took a leaf out of Narendra Modi's book and made sure that every one sitting in the audience had a cup of tea in hand. Shetty started with a dare especially targeted at the journalists. “Challenge me with any tough question.” The response was immediate and questions were bombarded on a range of issues, from increasing parking problems to the obvious one of inflation. He chose the last, first. “Change the government and inflation will vanish,” he declared, and a round of applause followed immediately from his supporters. One of the residents of the Society
Gopal Shetty, BJP pointed out the problem of corruption in getting a no objection certificate for construction of property. Again his answer was simple. “You all know my style of working, I will fix them all. I am going to ask them for answers.” The BMC has enough money to deal with all kinds of civic issues, he assured his listeners. He ended with a counter question, “By how much of a margin are you going to make me win?” “By two lakh votes”, his obliging supporters shouted. Campaign chief Rajesh Sinha, said, “If we see the entire country as a family that looks to the government for direction, then we are living in a nation that has been orphaned. Only if we have a strong government at the Centre can we can think of mending the lapses in the system.”
Train seems to be the ‘Voting for MNS is like way to go for candidates voting for Congress’
By Avinash Lohana
By Suyash Padate
I
T
t looked like any other day at the Bandra station, until Aam Aadmi Party's Lok Sabha candidate for Mumbai North, Satish Jain, stepped out at 11 am and headed towards the Commissioner’s office to file his nomination papers.Waving at the people on the station, who seemed both shocked and amused to see their candidate travel in a train, he said, “The local trains symbolize the Aam Aadmi of Mumbai. For an occasion as auspicious as filing of nomination, the local trains were our natural choice.” Jain has been reaching out to people with his padyatras and holding open discussion forums with people in jansabahas. “Our first job will be to provide proper housing, clean water, cheaper electricity, sanitation and clean drainage, this will be our top priority for the people who are staying in slums.” Which is easier said than done but he surely knows that as much as the common man on whose behalf he is standing for elections. For Jain, this was and is a parivartan rally. The level of corruption is great and immediate change is required. Rupesh Sawant, a party worker who was a part of the rally said, “Sab jagah pe bahut corruption hai, AAP ke alawa dusri dono party chor hai aur kisi bhi gunde ko seat pe bitha sakti hai.” Another party worker, Sandip Mishra, said, “AAP is the voice of the aam aadmi. Only they can represent us fairly.”
Satish Jain, AAP Jain, a finance man with enviable experience in the corporate sector, does not seem particularly overwhelmed by the fact that this is his debut into the rough and tumble of politics. Nor is he backward about making known his views on the incumbent MP, Sanjay Nirupam if the Congress. “The Congress has been the most corrupt government that this country has ever seen and Nirupam has done very little for this constituency despite being a three time MP.” Vikas Sharma, a BMM student of Chetna College in Bandra, who was passing the procession at the time and who was rather dismissive of the shenanigans. “I am not going to vote for AAP but for the BJP. The county needs a strong and an experienced leader and Modi has both these qualities,” he declared unequivocally.
he Shiv Sena has fielded former minister and four-time legislator Gajanan Kirtikar from the North West constituency, now witnessing a multi-cornered fight. Kirtikar, also known as Gajabhau, is a popular name in Goregaon. He is pitted against Gurudas Kamat of the Congress and Mahesh Manjrekar of MNS. Speaking to ADC, Kirtikar said, “Last time Kamat won from this constituency. But later he became 'Delhi ka neta' and ignored the people in this area. This time I am determined to defeat Gurudas Kamat. I have been working in this constituency right from 2009. I am in touch with the people and am engaged in all social activities in my constituency. As many as 36 corporators elected from this constituency are from the Sena”. “As far as the MNS candidate is concerned, I am sure he will hardly make any impact. Manjrekar is no competition for me and he is not even active in politics. He has only played the role of Shivaji Maharaj in a film. But I have followed the directions of Shivaji Maharaj all my life. Marathi voters have now realised that voting for the MNS is like voting for Congress. So I do not see any threat from in MNS this election”, he added further. When asked about his priorities, Kirtikar said, “The primary role of an MP is to resolve issues of
Gajanan Kirtikar, Shiv Sena the people concerned with the Centre. Commuting is a major issue and the railways-related problems are to be addressed. I will insist for additional line between Bandra and Borivali. There are restrictions for redevelopment in the Koliwada area of Varsova. Relaxation can be sought for these areas, like they have done in Chennai. Similarly, there is need for rehabilitation of slum-dwellers near caves and improved financial norms for the postal department for leasing premises”. When asked about Rakhi Sawant's candidature, he said that elections had become fun for some. “There are several candidates who are in it just for publicity sake. No need to take cognizance of such non-serious candidates”, he added.

following a career in music. Go to the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre this evening and tomorrow as well, to hear her create her magic on a real Stradivarius, supported by the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. By all accounts, it should be an event to remember.
The place to be
She has caramel coloured curls and big brown eyes, a flawless complexion, a figure to match – and loads of talent on the violin. It looks like Nicola Benedetti, one of the world’s most recognisable young talents, has it all, including a capacity for hard work and a generosity of spirit extraordinary in one so young. She plays this evening and tomorrow at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre at the NCPA.
Unbeatable combo IN the April issue of NCPA’s On Stage magazine, Freyan Patel writes: “What is it about Nicola Benedetti that has fascinated the global media and the classical music world for a decade now? What does it take an artist at only 26 to walk the thin line between commercial and critical success? For that matter, what is it about Benedetti that has the world eating out of her extremely deft hands? Could it be her looks, which, in her own words, make her “easier to sell”? No doubt a little something called talent has helped too. But ask her and she will be the first to tell you that getting by on good looks and raw talent alone is impossible. Follow her journey, from the little girl who picked up her first violin at four, simply because her older sister Stephanie started lessons, to becoming one of the world’s most famous violinists, and you will find two very important constants: hard work and a passion for music.” We will accept the lot, but let us warn you – her looks are likely to floor anyone. In that department, she is like the Nigella Lawson of the music world – flawless, riveting to the eye. But
where Lawson is acknowledged to be a walking minefield inviting cholesterol highs and instant coronaries, with her passion for butter and flour and white sugar, Benedetti invites very high praise indeed for the fact that she is a musician. Early in her childhood, Patel writes, she and her sister were encouraged to pick something and “do that thing properly”. Both picked the violin and for Benedetti, endless hours of practice paid off. By the age of nine, she had eight grades of music under her belt and was the leader of “the 120-playerstrong National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. And a year later, she had earned a spot at the Yehudi Menuhin School, studying under the maestro himself.. Her talent did the rest. Taking her to London and Paris, playing at Westminster Abbey in a memorial to Menuhin. In 2002, at the age of 14 (we calculated), she had won the UK’s Brilliant Prodigy Competition, at which point she left the Menuhin school to train privately with Maciej Rakowski. We like the frequent mentions of Scotland in her background which is another fascinating part about her development. Benedetti is, of
course, of Italian origin, but her parents settled in West Kilbride, a village in North Ayrshire and she was born there. Which is as Scottish as one can get and accounts for the role the Scottish National Orchestra played in her development.
And already at a young age, this extraordinary young woman, who, when she won the Young Musician of the Year Award, became the first Scot to do so, is known for her eagerness to give back not just to music and the profession, but also to youngsters interested in
COULD be these days this is the office of the Collector, whether in town near the RBI, or at Bandra for the suburbs. For this is where all the candidates land up to file their nominations. What we find mildly confusing, however, is that many candidates (Satish Jain of the Mumbai North constituency) seem to start their padayatras and rallies even before they file their nominations. So have Priya Dutt and Milind Deora, not to mention the candidates of AAP, particularly Mayank Gandhi and Meera Sanyal. So even as we cover everyone regularly, in the midst of the proceedings, they go off to the Collector, there to formally sign in, and then take off and continue with what they were doing before! On Thursday, however, the events at the Collector’s office in town were hardly entertaining and in fact had journalists running for cover as brick bats and stones started flying and the MNS and the Shiv Sena began to use the poles of their flags as lathis. This is the time when many channels also probably wished they could resort to “drone journalism”, which is what is making itself felt in conflict situations in the middle weast and parts of Australia and the US. You know what we mean – cameras attached to dr5ones that are then flown over the sites of interest so that they get terrific aerial shots of the fracas below without one endangering themselves. Though knowing what the two Senas are like, they combatants would very likely aim their first stones at the flying cameras!
On a lighter note
OR perhaps we should say’ on a seriously dismaying note’. We were mildly horrified the other day when we caught a glimpse of the eponymously named Koffee with Karan, in the midst of a session with Sonam (I’m jes lak you) Kapoor and her father Anil, looking more like an elderly, pointy-chinned elf than usual. So Karan Johar was in the midst of a rapid fire round and asked Sonam, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Who said that”, and she hit a buzzer and said, “Robert de Niro”. Then, enchanted by her own stupidity and implied cuteness, she dissolved into giggles. By the way, she is supposed to be among the more literate among the Bollywood brigade because she reads.
For Sonam Kapoor, it was Robert de Niro who said ‘An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind’. Who is Mahatma Gandhi!

Yashodhar Phanse named Standing Committee Chairman while Trushna Vishwarao becomes first woman Leader of the House Pics: Sushil Kadam | ADC
By Khushboo Panjabi and Neha Shende
The Standing Committee of the BMC deals with all financial matters, including clearance of a budget of over Rs.31,000 crore. Every proposal with more than Rs.10 lakh budget has to be cleared by the committe.
T
he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has a new Chairman of the Standing Committee for the first time in five years. Shiv Sena's Yashodhar Phanse, who replaced Rahul Shewale as nominee for the chairmanship, stood against Congress nominee Bhomsingh Rathod and won, thus spoiling Shewale's chance of being elected for the record-making fifth consecutive year. The election took place yesterday in the presence of city Mayor Sunil Prabhu, Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh and other party leaders and coporators. Out of the city's 27 corporators, three MNS corporators, Samajawadi Party corporator Rayiz Sheikh and Congress corporator Dyanraj were absent. The 15 corporators belonging to the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance voted for Phanse, leaving Rathod behind with

a mere seven votes from the remaining corporators. Phanse replaced Shewale who held the office for four years in a row. Shewale is now Shiv Sena's candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from Mumbai South Central con-
stituency. Also making news is Trushna Vishwasrao, Shiv Sena corporator, who became the first woman Leader of the House in BMC's 135 years history. The post was allotted to her despite strong claims on the
seat by senior corporator Kishori Pednekar and former mayor Shraddha Jadhav. The Leader of the House plays an important role in the functioning of the BMC as she heads the ruling party and the civic house. Therefore she must co-ordinate with the other parties to come come to a consensus on various contentious issues. The post of House Leader acquired statutory status only in 2002.

T
he World Trade Centre was buzzing with activity as it played host to the 'Made in Pakistan Expo Mumbai 2014' organised by the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) in collaboration with EVECON, a Pakistan-based event management company under the AEGIS of Ministry of Commerce and Textiles of the Government of Pakistan and the All India Association of Industries (AIAI). The event is unprecedented in the history of Pakistan-India trade ties; and marks Pakistan’s oray into Mumbai, the heart of the Indian market. The Expo was officially inaugurated yesterday and will go on till April 7 between 10 am to 8 pm.
A real treat for lovers of Pakistani fashion, fabric and styles, one can choose from fashion garments, the famous lawn print suits (stitched and unstitched), textile fabrics, footwear, dresses, marble items, jewellery, herbal products, spices and food products. The Expo has numerous top Pakistani brands like Lulu's, House of Ittehad, Lala, Khaadi, Qarshi Industries, Gimmick, Pazeb Leather, Dawood Textiles, Cross Stitch, Seema's Boutique, Mehran Spice and Food Industry among others.
Also on offer are Pakistani delicacies like Chicken and Mutton Korma, Reshmi Seekh Kebab, Biryani and lots more. Bustling with enthusiastic shoppers and equally enthusiastic exhibitors amid tight police security, all of them were extremely happy to be showcasing their products at the expo and enjoying the Mumbai hospitality. Waqar from Cross Stitch, an exhibitor said, “We came to explore the market. It is my first exhibition and trip to India. People are really liking the products. The people here are extremely co-operative and really hospitable”. A representative from Zafarsons said, “The response has been very good. I love to come here. Mumbai is just like Karachi”. Sasha Ahmed who visited the expo said, “I basically love Pakistani dress pieces and their styles. When I heard about this expo, I said to myself that I have to go for it!” Vijay Kalantri, President, AIAI, said, “There is tremendous scope of doing business with Pakistan. We need to co-operate and work together.”
Before Rahul Shewale, Ravindra Waikar also held the post of the Standing Committee Chairman for four consecutive years, from 2006 to 2010. Shewale has held the chairman position from 2010 to 2014. Had he stood for the elections and won, it would have been a record breaking win for Shewale. The 227-strong municipal council houses 122 women. However, women hold none of the more important posts like mayor, group leaders and committe chairpersons. Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Vinod Shelar, who filed his nomination against Congress corporator Dr. Priyatama Sawant, was elected Chairman of the Education Committee with 15 votes.
The Drivers of Global Economy
B
RICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries would play an increasingly collective important role in the global economy. Together, the BRICS represent about half of the world population and quarter of global GDP and expected to rise sharply in the near future. The BRICS focuses on synergies and complementarities between the economies, highlighting their role as drivers of growth in the world economy. Close interactions within BRICS frames include not only multi level consultations on different economic issues, but policy, cooperative security, social and scientific development as well. BRICS summit in Durban has shown that the organization is fullgrown element of multiplier world. At the summit member-countries have considerably improved cooperation within the grouping in international policy and economy and worked out joint strategy of BRICS development. The increasing role of the BRICS is confidence by the rapid recovery of the economies of the global financial crisis, so that an optimal global economic policy is to be carried out without the involvement of the highest level BRICS economies. BRICS have been taking advantage of their abundant population and resources, and by and large achieved steady economic growth. It is very important for further development of BRICS that position of 5 countries on all major regional and global problems almost completely coincides, especially in question of EMT reform and unacceptability of military aggression against Iran and Syria. To create a future model for others, Prime Minister Manmohan
khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in ADVT.
Singh emphasized: “The rapid recovery of the BRICS economies from the financial crisis highlighted their role as growth drivers of global economy”. Indian officials clearly understand active group interactions to provide effective tool for solving wide range of international and domestic problems for the country. Geopolitical and security sphere are the others crucial fields of cooperation. BRICS is constantly growing influence in a world. It should take more active role in resolving longstanding issues like Syria and Iran. Indian officials together with other member nations have to remind international community the grave consequences of such actions in Libya made by West. Indian National Security Advisor, Shivshankar Menon elaborated, the BRICS meeting on security in this year made it possible to highlight many “important regional and global developments. Naturally, West Asia North Africa was major part of what we discussed. Syria, Libya, Mali. We also discussed ways to enhance our cooperation and coordination in cyber security, terrorism and piracy and other such threats to international security.” Terrorism has become a wide spread phenomenon in the 21st century. In some cases terrorism coupled with religious fundamentalism becomes the most vital problem for states followed by loss of innocent lives. In the information world cyber technology gets more advantages for terror. Thus, all these challenges demand the deep coordination of the countries to develop a common framework to address terrorism and religious fundamentalism.

The 22-year-old photo journalist of a magazine was gang raped by Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali, Salim Ansari, Siraj Rehman and a minor boy when she had gone to the Shakti Mills compound in Central Mumbai, with a male colleague on an assignment. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam had demanded the maximum punishment for the three repeat offenders – Kasim Bengali, Vijay Jadhav and Salim Ansari who are also convicted in the telephone operator gang-rape case. The court also rejected the defence argument that the section is only applicable if
the accused commits the offence after he is convicted. In the present case, trials of both cases were held simultaneously.“If that was the intent of the legislature, it would not have used the word conviction but would have said that it was applicable to the accused who commits the offence after he undergoes the sentence,” the court said. “The entire tenor of the section makes it clear that it is intended for enhancement of punishment. The court is not dealing with a new offence but adding a new charge to ensure that the principle of natural justice is adhered to,” observed the judge.
I was sure they'd get death: Sawant gang rape was done by the officers of Unit 3. Sawant, being the in-charge of the Unit 3, was not present 24x7 on the field like his colleagues and other officers during the probe, as he was mourning his young son's sudden death. However, he managed to stay updated about the case, deliver appropriate instructions to his fellow officers and pay visit during the interrogation of the accused. After resuming duty, Sawant personally checked all the details while preparing the charge sheet. “Detection, proper collection of evidences and projec-
tion of the case for the trail in the court are the three main factors for any policeman while investigating crimes,” says Sawant adding that he was damn sure about the death penalty in the case. An officer of 1985 batch, Sawant has worked in the same Unit for six years in 90's when the underworld was at its peak. Sawant has participated in the killings of 13 dreaded gangsters in separate encounters. He has been one of the founder members of the Criminal Investigating Unit (CIU), which came into existence in 1992.

even months after a blaze in building with a glass facade, which claimed four lives at Andheri, the fire department and BMC have come out with a fresh set of guidelines for such buildings. The Mumbai Fire Brigade is the first in India which has come up with a policy for construction of such structures. The fire department has now mandated automatic openings on every floor of such buildings as well as smoke detectors. A fire at the IndusInd Bank office in Andheri claimed four lives in June. In September 2012, a fire broke out in the 13storey First International Finance Centre, a commercial building in the BandraKurla Complex, gutting two floors. N.H. Nesrikar, deputy fire officer said, “Earlier, the open area was closed due to the glass facade. In the new
policy, the refuge floor will have to be kept open.” On every floor the openings will have to be at every 50 ft. The opening window has to have a minimum width of 1.5 m and height of 1.5 m facing the road. He added, “Earlier, there were less access points to such buildings. A window that opens automatically with laminated glass of high qaulity, when there is smoke in the building will ease firefighting and help in saving lives.” The fire department has also made mandatory automatic water curtains on every floor to douse fires. “Glass facades block ventilation in a building, and worsen the intensity of fire. Although fire fighters try to break the glass structures, it is dangerous. Ventilation and access for firefighters is a must in such buildings,” said Nesrikar. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Replying to queries over last year's Chhattisgarh Naxal attack in which Congress leaders were killed, Bhandari stated that though prior intelligence inputs were provided the government failed to take note of it. He wanted to know as to why the Congress was
silent on the incident. Meanwhile, Digvijay Singh has, in a statement issued, categorically denied the report alleging that it was a slander campaign against him. He denied having made any secret negotiations with the naxals through mediators.

on Japan and killing or inflicting deadly nuclear injuries on lakhs of hapless people of Japan during the World War II? For a long while, the US thought that Modi will continue to remain a non-entity. Business rivals of the US, like England and some other countries of Europe got a big welcome in Gujarat. The US felt completely left out and slowly decided to step into the international business fray. And finally, the national elections in India were announced. Narendra Modi conducted a whirlwind, effective poll campaign. The Modi wave was sweeping the country which perceived the Congress as a total corrupt party. The Congress did its best to get over this inconvenient, largely harmful corruption taint that stuck to its like a leach. Modi was largely responsible for exposing the
ROUND-UP A.R. Kanangi corruption in Congress government and among Congress leaders. And all opinion polls came to the conclusion that the Congress would be routed and the BJP would emerge as the largest single party in the Lok Sabha elections. The US could not ignore the message – which was coming loud and clear. It had no go but to get into the pro-Modi bandwagon. There have been developments in the American perceptions: The government and political and business groups now think that, in all probability, Narendra Modi would be the Prime Minister of India. The US does not want to get on the wrong side of Narendra Modi who is certain to clasp the US friendly overture whenever it is made. US President Barack Obama is likely to make the announcement shortly – perhaps before May 16.

NDIA is about to reach the realms of fame, money and power! In a few months India feels a man with a white beard, and designer kurtas will wave his magic wand and mighty miracles will take place: Corruption will disappear! The country will be catapulted economically in front of China! Rolls Royces, BMWs and Mercs will be driven even by the poor and the world will gasp at his magic! But in a room in Gujarat the same man with a white beard looks with uncertainty at the stick that lies in his hand; his magic wand. “You won’t let me down will you?” The magic wand remains silent. “You won’t let me down will you?” whispers the man with the white beard and designer kurta beseechingly. The stick is quiet as the man hears shouts outside his window; the shouts of a nation waiting for miracles with a wave of the magic wand.
The man with the white beard looks dejectedly at his stick as his PA enters his room, “Sir, the people are waiting for you to speak to them. There are thousands outside!” “What do they want to hear?” he whispers wearily looking at the dead stick.
BOB’S BANTER Robert Clements “How you will change India with a wave of your wand! How we will become the most powerful nation in the world…” “How our poor will drive Mercs?” “Mercs, and even private planes!” “What do I have to do?” “Sir, just show them the magic wand! Let them know what power you have just waiting to be used!”
asked openly — no hinting of any kind there – Muslims to vote for the Congress. “This is not a diktat, it is an appeal”, he added. On the last days of polling, chances of polarisation will become increasingly more. No move was just openly made. All parties are likely to do this. They all will appear in their true colours. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is not going to keep silent when a well-known Muslim religious leader denounces the Hindus in the country and openly appeals to Muslims to vote for the Congress, soon after Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers, she visited the Imam and asked for his support. It looks like it was readily given. Sonia Gandhi, president of the Congress, has been in no small measure responsible for the Hindu-Muslim divide. Her party has been attacking the RSS for its Hindutva agenda. She was wrong to suggest that the RSS had decided on polarisation led by Narendra Modi, there was no emphasis at all on Hindutva. The RSS and all the BJP leaders have been making emphatic speeches about the need for ensuring unity in the country. No BJP leader said anything about any need for dividing the voters on religious lines. It was the Congress and the NCP's Sharad Pawar who were making an appeal for votes on religious grounds. Not once had the top BJP leader and the PM nominee Narendra Modi made a reference to Hindutva. His election campaign was totally based on governance and growth. Should the Election Commissioner take action against Imam Bukhari for asking Muslims in the country to vote for the Congress? This is a dangerous happening. What happens when Hindu groups strike back and their leaders go on a Hindutva agenda? They can open the dangerous Babri Masjid issue and attack the Muslims. A HinduMuslim poll war would be dangerous to the country. All this while there has been only talk of polarisation, but now it has become a reality. And it would be a disaster if a communal divide takes place during elections. In such an event, violence would become unavoidable. The Congress party is not likely to do anything that would blow off the crisis. It finds itself on the eve of polarisation, in a desperate situation. It is in such a frustrated state that it will be ready to take any measure to get an advantage over the BJP. It is a card which the Congress has played to improve its poll position. There must have been a silent deal between the Imam and the Congress president when they met. Barely a couple of days after the meeting, Imam Bukhari has made the 'appeal' to Muslims to vote for Congress. The Election Commission should act fast or else there will be huge communal trouble. The man with the white beard looks at the dead piece of wood and sobs, “This stick cannot do anything! It’s just a dead piece of wood! I have promised too much and will not be able to deliver. How will I push the bureaucracy to work? They have never worked in their lives! How will I make ministers responsible when all they want is a share of loot?” The man with the white beard and designer kurta looks at the dead piece of wood then watches with surprise as his PA picks it up. “This magic wand has served you well sir! When you faced trouble in your state twelve years ago, you used it to push minorities into a corner. When you needed to get the whole chunk of the majority vote you gave them this stick to kill, rape and bludgeon the defenceless. This is your magic wand, show it to the people. Let them dream it will create Mercs and BMWs!” The PA smiles as the man with the white beard picks the magic wand, twirls, brandishes, pokes and thrusts it like a blood thirsty sword..! — bobsbanter@gmail.com

Mahabharata of polls THIS refers to the various news related to the Lok Sabha polls. Firstly, Gopal Shetty forgot the main charge against Sanjay Nirupam. The latter had betrayed Shiv Sena and joined Congress, obviously for power and its trillions of rupees and dollars in India and abroad. Why can’t he betray his voters, if he can betray his original political party? Secondly, NCP chief Sharad Pawar predicted in a press conference that BJP is likely to emerge as the single largest party in the coming general elections, but it (the NDA) will fall short of the magic figure of 272 to form the next government. All the people from entire India not only predict, but they are very much sure that the Modi-led NDA will capture more than 400 seats, and as its obvious result, NDA will also be able to form the next government, provided not a single EVM is tampered with anywhere in India before or after any voting date. This is quite possible, because there is a big gap of number of days between voting in different parts of India and the actual counting thereof.
in Tamil Nadu viz. Sivaganga. His claim that GDP had the propensity to grow at above four per cent was at variance with the IMF projection at below four per cent. Similarly, Chidambaram's claim that the CAD is brought down to USD 35 billion from USD 88.2 billion is required to be analysed for the reason that a huge debt-burden in Foreign Currency is scheduled for repayment during FY 2014-15. His regime will go down in the history as the worst with a high rate of taxation and retail inflation and no sincere effort to bring back the black money said to have been stashed in foreign banks, INR nose-diving to Rs.68/USD. Chidambaram seems to have rightly taken stock of the situation not only in Sivaganga but in the entire Tamil Nadu that he runs the risk of losing his deposit and addressed his intuition.

APROPOS your article 'Modi lambasts Rahul over poll ticket to Ashok Chavan' (Mar. 31). Modi making a brouhaha about Congress giving a ticket to Ashok Chavan is typical Modi double-speak and reeks of hypocrisy. It is true that Chavan benefitted from unethical flat allotments in Adarsh. A Supreme Court appointed panel has ruled that the Adarsh land belongs to the state government and therefore the accusation of depriving Kargil widows and orphans is baseless. The problem with Modi and others of his ilk is that they believe the public are gullible idiots. BEST NOW: The calling-off of the BEST bus employees' strike, which went on for almost two days crippling the city, is a huge relief to the Mumbaikars. MUMBAITES heaved a sigh of relief with the BEST workers calling off their two-day strike after an amicable solution was reached. Railways and the BEST buses are the lifeline of Mumbai on which millions of commuters depend to reach their place of work and back to their homes. The BEST workers are human beings and work under tremendous pressure. The long working hours in sweltering heat and traffic jams take a severe toll on their health. The food served in the canteen –
Vada pav and chai – constitutes the lunch for majority of the staff along with a banana. The toilets in the bus depots are generally filthy and stinking. There are frequent breakdown of buses because of potholed paver block roads and substandard inferior spare parts in some cases stranding passengers midway on roads. It is good that the honourable Bombay High Court was sympathetic to the woes of the workers and the Union leaders heeded to the suggestion and efforts of the
THE illegal, unwarranted and uncalled for flash strike called by the BEST drivers and conductors with the support of Union Leader Sharad Rao, holding the city at ransom for two days and crippling the movement of Mumbaikars, for the implementation of the ‘Canada School Duty Schedule’ from April 2014, needs to be very seriously taken up by the Chief Secretary of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST). Who is Sharad Rao to take law into his hands and hold the city at ransom? Just a mere Union Leader who enjoys the support of the NCP leaders. There should at least have been information about the strike which would have given the Mumbaikars time to think of an option to travel. But what is most disturbing is that he even provoked the auto drivers and taxi drivers to support the BEST strike in the event of no decision arrived at. — K.V. Raman, Malad

"We are of the considered opinion that a strong prima facie case against the appellant exists, on the basis of material available on record and the same is sufficient to deny bail to her," the bench said. The judges said that they did not find the impugned order passed by the Special MCOCA Court judge on September 25, 2012, to suffer from any legal infirmity. Senior Counsel U.A. Lalit argued that the appellant suffers from serious ailments and produced before the court a medical report dated February 4, 2014, issued by the Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Bhopal. National Investigating Agency Counsel Rohini Salian submitted that government hospitals were well equipped to provide all sorts of medical help to the appellant and that even at this juncture, the Sadhvi is being provided with the best medical facilities available in government hospitals.

ters, the film is clearly meant to revive Dhawan Sr’s career with Dhawan Jr’s residual Student of the Year fan-following. But look for the typical touches: a gangster (Kher) was born in Manali so his thundering words echo. Or that hilarious kissing demo, that is pucca Dhawan. There are too many humourless stretches in Main Tera Hero—it is not the guffaw-inducing type of film, but a few scattered chuckles type. Arunoday Singh’s comfort level in a film which should have been out of his range is remarkable—he fits right into the D-world craziness. After this boisterous allrounder performance, what Varun Dhawan does next would be interesting to see.

HOSE who have watched King Kong the 1933 classic, would immediately relate the movie to Beauty and the Beast, wherein the monster finds he’s falling in love with a beautiful girl. King Kong (2005), is a remake of that classic, the same story, only this time it boasts of greatly improved special effects and a play time of three hours. The movie won Academy Awards for sound, sound design and visual effects. A great treat for the kids. Carl Denham (Jack Black) is a filmmaker who is eagerly waiting for a big hit and would do anything to meet his goal. His dream might just come true when he hears about Skull island, and the giant creature that inhabits the place. Carl is all set to head to the island, shoot the movie and get fame and fortune. But things don’t go according to plan when suddenly his leading lady backs out at the last minute. Carl finds an unknown and jobless actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) and tries to convince her to join his film. He also manipulates playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) into being his screenwriter. His crew, actors and technicians board a ship and head out. But no one on board knows Carl’s secret plan of Skull island.
Whenn the ship’s crew find out, they try to turn the ship around, only to end up stuck on Skull Island, where they find deranged human inhabitants, wondrous creatures, crawly insects, and lastly the huge gorilla Kong (Andy Serkis). Ann is captured and found by Kong. Both develop a special bond, but when separated by Ann’s lover Jack, a fight erupts with Kong, leading him to the crew who capture and cart him to New York. But trouble starts when Kong sees a female actor and recalls his bonding with Ann. Kong breaks free and creates havoc on the streets, only to wind up atop the Empire State Building with Ann trying to save him. Watch the moving finale.

al takes up an issue that should concern everybody, if it doesn’t already-- the water shortage that has started killing animals and will soon affect human life in parts of the country (and the world). But Girish Malik’s film set in the arid Rann of Kutch, cannot settle on the right tone. It’s neither serious enough to be disturbing, not interesting enough to be engaging. It tries for a mix of exotic and realistic, which simply doesn’t work. It also throws too many strands into the air, and can’t get a proper hold on any. Bakka (Purab Kohli) is a water diviner in a tiny, parched desert village. The inhabitants claim to be starving, but are dressed in gleaming ethnic costumes and all look well-fed. For a film taking a mostly

realistic approach, Jal glosses over details like how the villagers make a living. They drive chhakdas, talk about blue CDs, but there is no evidence of that kind of progress. When a foreigner (Saidah Jules) arrives to study flamingos, she is shocked to find many dead chicks. She is able to pull enough strings to get a government team to fetch a huge drill to find fresh water for the birds, but is curiously apathetic towards the villagers—maybe because all they do is leer at her and make crass comments. In between the water woes, there’s a love story between Bakka
and a girl from an enemy village (Kirti Kulhari), the machinations of her thwarted suitor (Mukul Dev) and the heartbreak of his childhood sweetheart (Tannishtha Chatterjee). A very contrived plot twist hurtles Bakka into tragedy. No matter how much one tries to empathise with the characters, Malik’s treatment just never manages to draw the viewer into the desperate world of these neglected villagers. The location is captured beautifully, though, even if it’s all gleaming and touristy with CGI twisters and storms showing up at regular intervals.

Sagar Talashilkar, Manoj Joshi and Usha Nadkarni play their supporting roles very well. And how did the name 'Yellow' come about? Well...'Yellow' is the goldfish that Gauri loves. It encourages her to swim. It becomes the torch bearer for others in her ilk. The story is commendable and camera work is sleek, especially the swimming sequences. Rarely does a film in this age make you want to stand up and applaud. 'Yellow' is one such film.

ronically, the most brutal in urban settings aren’t the animals that intolerant residents collectively hound and attempt to eradicate by sheer force even treachery. The law on animals being in place apart, it’s the sheer apathy towards the mute that compounded with collective bullying in societies that leaves petowners defenceless, sometimes even isolated and forced to concede. Statistics and ‘incidence of dog-bites and consequent deaths’ are hurled in the regular rhetoric aimed to silence animal lovers in cooperative housing societies across the nation. And, in the absence of clear-cut directives to the same, troublemongers have a field day. In response to a record number of complaints in this regard, Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) Chairman Major General (Retd) Dr R. M. Kharb issued a detailed circular last month to address a range of issues. Issued in place of an earlier circular dated 1st Feb 2014 that stood withdrawn, the one issued on February 20th, seeks to supplement what was earlier issued and to add to it. It reads, “It is well known that in the recent times, RWAs, Apartment Owners’ Associations, Cooperative Group Housing Societies and other gated complexes have taken to imposing many unreasonable restrictions on pet owning residents such as disallowing the use of lifts or parks by pets, or even banning pets altogether. They’re also known to frequently encourage mistreatment, dislocation and dumping of street dogs.” The circular also acknowledged that compassionate persons that wish to tend to and feed street dogs are often discouraged and pressurised to refrain from doing so. There is widespread resentment against these moves, which apart from being unreasonable are also unlawful and against recent court rulings. RWAs or an Apartment Owner’s Associations, Cooperative Group Housing Societies, Gated Complexes etc., often get a series of complaints regarding street dogs. There are requests that street dogs be driven away through physical intervention by security guards or members themselves and/or just dumped elsewhere. “If you accede to these requests, you will not only be violating laws and pronouncements of courts, buy will not achieve any permanent solution either. The problem will become perennial and you will also run afoul of animal welfare people that are increasing in number by the day and banding themselves into well organised groups,” says the AWBI Chairman. The circular also goes on to set out some dos and don’ts with respect to pet dogs and street dogs. With regard to pet dogs which are usually targeted by society members who’d promptly ‘legislate’ in general body meetings and pass resolutions banning pets and controlling their behaviour, the circular says: a) Even by obtaining consensus or even if a majority of the residents want it one cannot legally introduce any sort of ‘ban’ on the keeping of pet dogs by residents. Nobody can insist that ‘small

LEGAL QUERIES
No member or committee can cite barking as a valid reason for any ban sought to be introduced. sized’ dogs are acceptable and ‘large sized’ dogs are not. No member or committee can cite barking as a valid and compelling reason for any ban sought to be introduced. b) Members cannot do it even by amending bye-laws or regulations as such a ‘ban’ cannot be put into place since it is illegal and does not have the sanction of law. In fact, in trying to ‘ban’ pets, or limit their number, you interfere with a fundamental freedom, guaranteed to the citizens of India i.e. the freedom to choose the life they wish to live, which includes facets such as living with or without the companionship of animals. c) If the resident with pet/s does not violate any civic or other laws, nobody in the society has the right to object. The general body cannot frame or amend bye-laws that are at variance with the laws of the country. Even by a complete majority, a general body cannot adopt an illegality. Please remember, you do not have the right to legislate and ‘lay down law’ for residents and apartment owners or even tenants. A court has, in fact, known to have observed that “dogs are family” and can use lifts for free. Please ensure that this sort of restriction is not therefore imposed in the form of either a ban or any special charges for the use of lifts by pets. With regard to the use of parks by pets, AWBI says, “Banning pets from garden or parks is short-sighted. Firstly, you may or may not own the garden or park in question. Secondly, pets that are not properly exercised may show aggression in frustration and that surely, cannot contribute to the benefit of the residents. It may be better to fix timings when pets can be walked without inconvenience to other residents. These timings can then be intimated to the general body. Where the use of leashes/muzzles by pet owners, defecation by pets in community premises, imposition of fines and other similar measures is concerned, a
member may request pet-owners to keep their pets on leash when walking them in common areas. One cannot, however, insist on the use of muzzles. The law already provides for penalties for negligent pet owners, which the aggrieved parties can avail of. AWBI has even clarified on the issue of cleaning of pet excreta by pet owners. “In the absence of central or state laws requiring cleaning of pet excreta by pet owners, one cannot impose any rule regulating bye-laws with respect to mandatory cleaning of the same or impose special charges or fines on pet owners”. Nobody can impose fines and special charges of any kind on pet owners, because there is no mandate in law for the same. If at all any association succeeds in intimidating a pet owner into ‘giving up’ or ‘abandoning’ a pet, it will actually have abetted violating the law and may well be aggravating the menace of ownerless animals on the street, that are not accustomed to living on the street and therefore get involved in and lead to accidents, injuries and deaths. Bear in mind that intimidation is an offence in law. By law, stray dogs cannot be beaten, driven away or dumped elsewhere or killed. They can merely be sterilised in the manner envisaged in the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, vaccinated and then returned back to their original location. For area-wise sterilisation program that the law mandates be followed, dogs have to be returned back to their original habitat after sterilisation and immunisation. There is a reason for the release of street dogs back into the same locality / territory after sterilisation and vaccination. Dogs being territorial in nature tend to fight off other dogs and keep them from entering their territories and this way the canine population in each locale stabilises. It may be realised that there is no law that prohibits feeding street dogs inside or outside community premises and gated complexes. Citizens who choose to do so are in fact performing a duty cast upon them by the Constitution of India – of showing compassion to all living creatures. Various Courts, including High Courts, have upheld street dogs feeding since the same reduces human – animal conflict and suspicion and facilitates animal birth control (by making dog catching easier). Under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act and Section 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code, animal cruelty is a punishable offence that could fetch imprisonment and fine. Also, any attempt to interfere with or harass persons who choose to tend to and feed community dogs, may tantamount to the offence of criminal intimidation. “Last but not the least: any aggression or hostility that the dogs may be subjected to, will only render them aggressive and hostile to humans. They may then resort to snapping and biting in selfdefence. If the same happens, the human aggressors shall be the only ones to blame,” says the AWBI chairman.

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

We had self-belief to chase the target: Dhoni
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said there was a "sense of calmness" in the innings break as the team backed itself to chase down the 173-run target set by South Africa in the ICC World T20 semi-final. "There was a sense of calmness in the dressing at the innings' break (after South Africa put up 172 on the board). Most of the thoughts were positive. Everybody saw that the wicket was better than those we have played on, and they believed they could chase this down. It is not just the self-belief, but the belief in each other that is crucial," said Dhoni at the post-match presentation ceremony. India stormed into the final of the World Cup with a resounding six-wicket victory over South Africa, with Virat Kohli once again rising to the occasion with a scintillating unbeaten 76. "There are not many who are as consistent as Virat. It is great to have him at No. 3. He has always grabbed his opportunities. Something everyone needs to learn from him," said Dhoni.
immediately as he pulled Wayne Parnell behind deep fine leg for a six to bring down the equation. An uppishly played shot through vacant third man and an inside edge meant that Parnell gave away 17 runs. The over proved to be the turning point as India got the equation down to 23 from three overs. Indian started the chase with a flurry of boundaries, including three in JP Duminy's first over. Ajinkya Rahane's was a backfoot punch through the covers while Rohit Sharma got an edge through
slips and banged the next past midoff as 14 came off the opening over. Albie Morkel got the new ball from the other end and Rohit's spanking square cut got him his third boundary. His fourth boundary came when he pulled Morkel over the midwicket fielder. With 23 from two overs, India's chase was on the right track. Brief Scores: South Africa 172/4 in 20 overs [du Plessis 58, R. Ashwin 3/22] lost to India 176/4 in 19.1 overs [Virat Kohli not out 72, Ajinkya Rahane 32] by six wickets.
Gavaskar denies discrimination in giving RR games to Ahmedabad M
UMBAI: Interim President of BCCI-IPL Sunil Gavaskar said the uncertainty over Jaipur's status to host the T20 league games and Rajasthan Royals' willingness to play in Ahmedabad led to the franchise's home ties to be shifted to the Motera Ground in the Gujarat city. "What I can say is the BCCI-IPL had sent letters earlier on to all associations asking for their availability in view of the fact that this year the general elections are on. We have scheduled the matches according to the okays that we have received from various associations. And because
there was that little bit of uncertainty about Jaipur," Gavaskar told reporters outside the Board's headquarters here. He explained that some home games of Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab have also been shifted to other cities - Ranchi and Cuttack – respectively. "And not just Jaipur, as you see from the schedule, Chennai and Mohali have also had issues. Therefore, the endeavour has been to make sure that the schedule is not been disrupted," said the former India skipper. He referred to the recent Ra-
jasthan Cricket Association's election results which are being contested by the BCCI in the Supreme Court. "Besides, I think the RCA matters are also sub-judice. Also the fact that the Rajasthan Royals did indicate that they would be happy to play at Ahmedabad, the decision that was taken was in view of that.” But it is also in view of the fact that every franchise has been talked to. Some of the regular venues like Dharamsala, for example, has missed out, Chennai will get only a couple of matches because of the election situation.
MIRPUR: Veteran skipper Charlotte Edwards and young Sarah Taylor batted sensibly to chase down a paltry total and help England women beat South Africa by nine wickets to enter the final of the ICC Women's World T20 here today. The English eves will meet their Australian counterparts in the final on Sunday. Put into bat, South African women could only manage 101 in 19.5 overs with nine of their batswomen failing to reach double figures. Mignon du Preez (23) and Chloe Tyron (40) were the only two players who reached double digits, as right arm seamer Anya Shrubsole and left-arm slow medium Rebecca Grundy took two wickets each. Shrubsole gave away only 12 runs in her four overs and was adjudged the 'Player-of-the-match' for her efforts. In reply, England scored the runs with as many as 19 deliveries to spare. Openers Edwards (36) and Sarah Taylor (44 not out) added 67 runs for the opening wicket to wrap up the match in their favour. Edwards hit five boundaries during her 37-ball knock, while Taylor and the other unbeaten batswoman Heather Knight (21 not out) hit three boundaries each. Spinner Sune Luus was the only wicket-taker for South Africa. Brief Scores: South Africa 101 in 19.5 overs (Chloe Tyron 40, Anya Shrubsole 2/12) lost to England 102/1 in 16.5 overs (Sarah Taylor 44 no, Charlotte Edwards 36, Heather Knight 21 no).
English eves celebrate their entry in to the finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Friday defeating South Africa by nine wickets. They take on Australia in the finals on Sunday.

IN BRIEF Seven footballers arrested on spot fixing charges
LONDON: Seven players from Football League clubs in north-west England have been arrested in connection with alleged spot-fixing in matches. The footballers are all aged between 18 and 30, the National Crime Agency said. Six other men originally arrested in December on suspicion of involvement in spot-fixing, then later bailed, have been rearrested, the agency added. All 13 are currently being interviewed by police over allegations of bribery and money laundering. Spot-fixing is where a player corruptly influences a specific element of a match, for example by intentionally getting a yellow card or conceding a corner, without trying to fix the final score.

EW DELHI: Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap crashed out of the India Open with straight-game defeats, bringing the home challenge to an end at the USD 250,000 Super Series badminton tournament. World number eight Saina, who reached her maiden Indian Open quarterfinal on Thursday, saved four match points against her nemesis Yihan Wang before going down 16-21 14-21 in a 39-minute women's singles contest for her eighth defeat to the Chinese. Kashyap, on the other hand, brought some cheer to his fans with his efforts on the court even though he could not stop world number one Lee Chong Wei, losing 15-21 13-21 in a 40-minute men's singles match. Up against a familiar foe in Yihan, Saina tried to put pressure only to falter with her strokes and could not finish off the points. Her strokes were inaccurate and lot of the retrieves got buried at the net. In the opening game, Saina tried to keep the shuttle on the back of the court but Yihan was more energetic as she glided through the court with ease and retrieved
COIMBATORE: Noida's Amardip Sinh Malik surged in lead as he fired a three-under-69 on day three of the PGTI Players Championship at Coimbatore Golf Club. Malik's three-day total of nine-under-207 placed him one shot ahead of the rest. Delhi's Naman Dawar posted an evenpar-72 to lie second at eight-under-208. Malik (70-68-69), in pursuit of his maiden title, climbed from overnight tied fourth to pole position thanks to a clinical 69 today. He began with five pars and earned his first birdie of the day with a 10-feet conversion on the sixth. The 28-year-old then found the par-5 10th green in two shots to pick up another stroke. A chip-putt for birdie on the 13th took him to three-under but a misjudgement on the 14th led to his only bogey of the day. Malik, who had ended 2013 in 19th place on the Rolex Rankings, sank another birdie on the 15th to emerge as one of the top contenders for the title.
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket has offered an incentive of USD 1500 to the national team players as a reward for reaching the final of the ICC World T20 that will be held in Mirpur on Sunday. SLC said that a further USD 1500 would be made available to them if they emerged winners. Players were not happy with the new payment formula offered by the SLC.They ventured into Bangladesh to play in the T20 without full agreement on the new payment formula.
everything which was thrown at her to lead 11-9 at the break. After the breather, Yihan continued her domination and kept Saina at bay riding on the Indian's errors. Saina's taps were going to the net, and smashes out of the court. Yihan smashed one at the back court to earn four game points and then with Saina hitting out, she earned the bragging rights. Saina went for her two instant review chances which has been put in place today but on both the occasions she wasted it. Things didn't change much in the second game as once again Yihan marched ahead to lead 11-4 with the help of precise taps and backhand returns. Saina reeled off four straight points after the breather by engaging Yihan in rallies. But Yihan once again started dominating the proceedings with the help of her repertoire of shots. A few unforced errors and wrong judgments and Yihan was leading 18-9. The Chinese then made it 199 with the help of a cross court flick and soon enjoyed 10 match points at 20-10. However, there was still fight left in Saina as she saved four match points but then Yihan closed the door with a mid-court smash.

RENOBLE (FRANCE): Michael Schumacher has "moments of consciousness and awakening", his spokeswoman said on Friday, in a sign of progress months after the Formula One legend suffered devastating brain injuries in a ski accident. Doctors put Schumacher in a medically induced coma after the December 29 accident in which he slammed his head on a rock while skiing at the French resort of Meribel with his son and friends, and little has filtered through since about his condition. "Michael is making progress. He shows moments of consciousness and awakening," Sabine Kehm said in a statement.
mer Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa was quoted as saying that Schumacher seemed to respond to him during a visit. "He is sleeping, he looks normal and he showed a few responses with his mouth," Massa told German tabloid Bild. And last month, Schumacher's family said they were confident that the racing legend who defied death more than once on the track would pull through. "There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient", Kehm said at the time in a statement. "It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation," the statement read. Gambhir, Sehwag star again to power Delhi to fourth straight win
CHANDIGARH: Gautam Gambhir led from the front with a breezy unbeaten 75 as Delhi cruised to a nine-wicket win over Haryana to record their fourth straight victory in a North Zone leg match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, here today. Set a target of 141 runs by Haryana, star pair of Gambhir and Virender Sehwag (49) once again sizzled with the bat for Delhi, putting on a 96-ball 121-run stand for the opening wicket to set the platform for the win here. While Sehwag's was an unusually sedate knock, Gambhir was at his attacking best.Gambhir's runs came off 53 balls during which he struck seven boundaries and three sixes. Sehwag, on the other hand, played second fiddle and hit just three fours and one six during his 50-ball knock. Sehwag was the lone Delhi wicket to fall, bowled by right-arm pacer Harshal Patel in the 16th over. After Sehwag's dismissal, Gambhir and Unmukt Chand (7 not out) ensured the win for Delhi with 15 balls to spare without any further damage. Earlier, Haryana rode on half centuries from opener Avi Barot (51 off 42) and Guntashveer Singh (64 off 49) to post 140 for seven after opting to bat. Apart from Barot and Guntashveer, no other Haryana batsmen could manage double digit scores. The duo scored 103 runs for the second wicket to propel Haryana to the modest score. The lanky Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi with figures of four for nine from his quota of four overs.
