REFLOATING VIKRANT ISSUE

ormer BJP MP Dr. Kirit Somaiya yesterday, slammed the Central Government for proceeding with the auction of the Indian Maritime Ship (IMS) Vikrant after the state government expressed its inability to maintain the decommissioned aircraft carrier. Speaking to newspersons here, he disclosed that the deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gopinath Munde, will lead a delegation of party leaders to the Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony on December 5 to ask him to halt the auction and implement the government’s decision to convert the IMS Vikrant into a war museum. The senior BJP

leader stated that the then Union Defence Minister, George Fernandes, had signed an agreement with the then BJP-Shiv Sena government about handing over the decommissioned aircraft carrier to the state. The Defence Ministry was supposed to have allocated Rs.40 crore out of the Rs.64 crore needed to repair and refurbish the ship. However, the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government, in 2003-04, sought permission to build a helipad, a 7-star hotel and a casino on the ship. However, the Navy objected to the proposal for constructing a helipad. Somaiya slammed the state government over its inability to even allocate Rs.64 crore for the war museum. Terming the IMS Vikrant as the pride of the nation, he lamented that the government now wanted it to die. He wanted to know why the Congress-led government could not implement the project in the last 10 years. Somaiya sarcastically remarked that the Congress-NCP-led state government could indulge in a Rs.70,000 crore irrigation scam, but could not find Rs.64 crore to convert the legendary ship into a war memorial.

CITY OPINIONS

Do you think medicos and staffers at public hospitals behave inhumanly with patients the way a doctor has described in his blog? Varsha Ganesh Student No. The staff at public hospitals might be rude, but I don’t think they would slap a pregnant lady or do something similar to that.

Punit Bhavsar Working professional No. This seems difficult to believe. Had this been the situation, public hospitals wouldn’t be crowded with people the way they are today. Suresh Raja Banker No. I have heard of cases where the staff has been rude and cases of assaults are also heard off. But slapping pregnant women or totally refusing treatment is unheard of. Mohit Alva Working professional No. It is hard to believe that such behaviour is meted out to people at public hospitals. Rashmi Iyer Student No. Public hospitals may not be the best places to expect courtesy and chivalry but slapping patients and refusing treatment is hard to believe.

I

t looks like the state government’s decision to adopt the Central Clinical Establishment Act (CEA), 2010 might be put on hold for some time, as talks of giving Maharashtra its own CEA are on. Dr. Anil Pachnekar, President, Indian Medical Association, Maharashtra said, “We had a meeting with the Health Minister and other officials on December 3, where the need for a new CEA for the state was discussed, and it has been agreed that the Central CEA will not be applied to Maharashtra.”

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2013

The decision of applying the Central CEA to Maharashtra had faced opposition by stakeholders like health activists, NGOs and doctors, as it was felt that the Central CEA has a few major drawbacks and would not suit the needs of the people of Maharashtra. The reservations that the medical fraternity and other stake holders had about the Central CEA being directly applied to the State were that the provisions were neither people friendly nor doctor friendly. Explaining why the Central CEA shouldn’t be applied to the state Dr. Pachnekar said, “The provisions are

very stringent. For instance, the Central CEA says that if a general physician gets a cardiac emergency, he should stabilise the patient before referring him to a specialist. Now, if something happened to the patient while a general physician tries to stabilise him, other than being beaten up by the family of the patient, the court of law will also question his decision. This is just one example out of several others that can be cited. This is why we need an act that suits the needs of people of Maharashtra. Also, one has to keep in mind that health is after all a state prerogative.”

Health Minister Suresh Shetty confirmed this development and said, “Yes, this issue has been discussed and a new Central Establishment Act suitable for Maharshtra will be made within the framework of the existing Central Act. The opinion of the law and judiciary department of the state government will be sought. Once the draft is ready, it will be presented before both houses of the legislature.” The draft for a new CEA will be prepared within fifteen days added Dr. Pachnekar.

This report, based on a study conducted between November 2012 and February 2013, with the support of NGOs and the Co-ordination Committee for Vulnerable Children (CCVC) along with TISS students, was released on Tuesday by Varsha Gaikwad, Minister for Women and Child Development and Justice V.M Kanade, Judge, Bombay High Court at the Indian Merchant Chambers Hall in Churchgate. The report states that a total of 36,154 children were found on the streets across 24 wards during the time of enumeration. An additional 905 children were found on railway trains and platforms of the Mumbai suburban rail network. Finally, a total of 37,059 street chil-

dren were enumerated in Mumbai through this census, out of which 70 per cent were boys and thirty per cent were girls. The study further states that 65 per cent of these children lived with their families on the street. Around 24 per cent of those found to be of school going age was illiterate, while only 31 per cent of children between 4 and 6 years of age attended balwadis. Street working children constituted 24.44 per cent. Around 15 per cent of these children appeared to be addicted to drugs including whitener, tobacco, shoe polish and other such substances. 2.5 per cent were identified with disabilities and 25 per cent were unable to eat regular meals due to a lack of funds, dependence on others for food, illness, injury and lifestyle. While half of the street children used paid toilets, 40.2 per cent used public toilets. About 44 per cent of the sample in the survey witnessed verbal, physical or sexual abuse, torture and forced starving while 77.7 per cent of children were unaware of the scope of any assistance from the police, government agencies or NGOs

The season of art and culture is upon us

“I’M looking forward to the next three months when we can enjoy key art, theatre and music shows. Artists (like relatives) descend upon us from all parts of the world and country because this is the only season they sweat less profusely while performing. They love the Mumbai audiences who are as serious about fine arts as they are about their socializing. It’s almost therapeutic,” writes Suhasini Ahluwalia, who also does public relations stuff for arty things and knows a bit about the subject! While not in the league of Chennai’s ‘season’ of heavy duty culture in December and January, Mumbai still has much to offer. “For now, a walk around South Mumbai’s art galleries is the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon preceded by a leisurely lunch at Fountain Restaurant (hope their Turkey sizzlers are on) or Cafe Churchill. through pottery to drama, carpentry and weaving. Expect to hear their choir during the coming Christmas season as well! We remember making a visit to the institution some years ago, to see the dynamic and completely committed head, Meher Banaji. It was evening and we were taken around the school and also to the dormitories where the children spent some recreation time. And here we had the strange experience of hearing a completely normal sounding gaggle of energetic kids talking, laughing, some reading, playing board games, razzing one another and generally acting up. Except that everything was happening in the dark! Since the children were blind, there was no need for the lights and residual illumination was more than enough for the sighted to manage their work. But the situation underscored the sheer normalcy of a life lived without sight, provided other senses were trained to compensate. Truly, the Happy Home and School for the Blind, which was established almost 90 years ago in 1925, is aptly named.

The area around Trongsa Dzong (fort) is characterized by deep gorges and thick forests with a main town on steep hill slopes. There are lots of hotels and restaurants to visit and each one offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Other things to see are the Watchtower of Trongsa Museum, or the Trongsa Dzong itself, an imposing sight atop a mountain and surrounded by deep ravines. It was built in 1648 and was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Then there is Kuenga Rabten Palace, the winter palace of the 2nd King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, 23 km from Trongsa. And yes, we think the urge to show off our knowledge is returning, when actually it is only from a Bhutan newsletter with some of the most stunning landscape pictures we have seen. State Cabinet agrees to sugarcane board

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2013

By Suyash Padate

A

gainst the backdrop of the recent violent agitation by sugarcane farmers, the state cabinet yesterday gave its nod for the establishment of a sugarcane control board. Henceforth, the cane price will be fixed by the board and will be binding on sugar factories. This new authority will function on the lines of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission and will have powers to penalise errant sugar factories. As per the cabinet’s decision, this proposed board will be headed by the Chief Secretary and will comprise secretaries of various departments. The Co-operation and Revenue Minister however, will not be a part of this board but the state sugar commissioner will be mem-

ber secretary. The proposed board will be set up by tabling the Maharashtra Sugar (Purchase & Supply) Bill 2013 which is expected to be tabled in the upcoming winter session of the state legislature starting from December 9 in Nagpur. After the bill is approved, the law will be executed under the provisions of the Sugarcane Control Order. The Rangarajan Committee has suggested the formula of 70:30 to fix the price of cane. As per this formula, sugar units without any business of by-products will have to pay a cane price of 70 per cent of their revenue realization, while they will have to spend 30 per cent on their functioning. On the other hand, sugar factories with by-product businesses will have to pay a cane price of 75 per cent of their revenue

realisation. In future, it will be mandatory for sugar factories to pay a fair and remunerative price as well as the cane price fixed by the sugarcane control board. According to the new law, it will be binding on the sugar factories to pay the cane price within 14 days to the growers which will be made on the basis of the recorded weight of the cane at the factory. Failing this, the sugar factory will have to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000. The state has 202 registered cooperative sugar factories and over 65 private factories which contribute 35.3 percent of the national sugar output. Among the Indian states, Maharashtra tops in sugar production as well as in the recovery of sugar, followed next by Uttar Pradesh.

No hoardings on buildings The BMC’s new civic policy on hoardings lays down strict guidelines for putting up hoardings atop buildings By A Staff Reporter

t is yet to be confirmed whether the ill-fated Aftab Manzil, a fivestoryed building, had collapsed due to an ‘illegal hoarding’ atop the building; however, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has thankfully learnt a lesson – no more hoardings atop buildings. The new civic policy on hoardings, which has reportedly got an approval from the Municipal Commissioner Sitarm Kunte but is yet to be officially declared, prohibits putting up of hoarding atop buildings in the city. “In case of breach, the culprit will

be prosecuted under 328 of BMC Act and Section 3 of Property Defect Act which will attract fine up to Rs.5,000 or three-month imprisonment or both”, said Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adatani. Altab Manzil that collapsed on June 10 this year took the lives of ten of its residents and the matter is subjudice. Investigation is on whether the collapse was caused due to tampering with columns or heavy hoardings atop the building. However, Adtani said, “The new policy has no relation with the Altab Manzil issue”. Besides, the Bombay High Court had also observed that illegal

hoardings have been mushrooming in the city and tampering with the city’s beauty. At least on two occasions, the court had called senior civic officials and asked for justification over the issue. In the new policy, the civic body said that no permission will be given for hoardings atop buildings henceforth. The distance between two hoardings must be between 20 to 100 metres. The existing buildings that have permissions for hoardings are obliged to make structural audits after every two years. If the structure is more than 30 years old, the sanction will be squashed automatically.

State PWD denies having a proposal for Kopari Bridge expansion By Prashant Hamine

A

senior official from the Public Works Department (PWD) on conditions of anonymity yesterday disclosed that there was no proposal before the department for expansion of the Kopari bridge on the Eastern Express Highway. Two months ago on September 30, the Executive Engineer PWD, Multistory division had in a reply to citizen activist Nilesh Ambekar informed him that the proposal for seeking approval of the Central Railway for expansion of the Kopari bridge had been forwarded in 2003. Ambekar has warned of agitation if the proposal is not cleared soon. The Kopari bridge over the Central Railway line serves as a connector between Thane and Mumbai on the Eastern Express Highway. Currently, the bridge

having 2x2 lanes on either side is used by motorists going to Thane and beyond. However, with the flyover at Majiwada junction becoming operational, the area at Kopari witnesses traffic bottlenecks during rush hours. It takes more than 15 minutes for motorists to cross the 250 meter stretch of the bridge. Citizen activists Nilesh Ambekar and Satyajit Shah had recently launched a signature campaign drive demanding that the bridge be expanded with two lanes being added on either side. Former BJP MLC Sanjay Kelkar too had urged the PWD to ensure speedy clearance of the proposed expansion of the flyover. According to Ambekar and Shah a decade ago the expansion of the bridge would have cost Rs.9 crore which will now cost to Rs.50 crore. They argued that if there is any further delay the cost will increase to Rs. 100 crore.

day after the Mumbai’s crime branch attached National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) director Jignesh Shah and his right hand man Joseph Massey’s properties, the crime branch chief assured the victims that the money would be distributed on pro-rata basis. The assurances were given to around 50 investors, the victims of the NSEL payment crisis scam, who met Jt.CP (Crime) Himanshu Roy. During the meeting with the JCP, the investors demanded stern action against board of

Four days before committing the murder, Girish left their two-year-old son with his paternal grandparents in Thane. “The severed body has been sent to J. J. Hospital for an autopsy. weaken the investigation.” Moreover, some investors also brought to the notice of the police that they are in utmost need of money to meet their emergency requirements. In this regard, Roy said, “We are doing our best within the legal purview to ensure the investors receive their money back as soon as possible.” The EOW on Tuesday attached the properties of Shah, Massey, also a director at the now defunct spot exchange firm, NSEL non-Executive chairman Shankarlal Guru and former MD of MCX Shreekant Javalgekar. So far the police have at-

EOW has invoked the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors Act in the case, which empowers them to attach immovable assets of the accused. An FIR was filed on September 30 by the EOW against Shah, Massey, other promoters, directors and defaulters charging them with cheating, forgery, breach of trust as well as criminal conspiracy, among

he brutal murder of a 33year-old woman at her apartment in Bhayandar and the spine chilling way in which her body was disposed off on Tuesday has turned out to be to be a coldblooded crime planned by an unemployed husband who was denied money to start a restaurant. According to the police, 29-year-old Girish Shrirang Pote murdered his wife Madhuwanti (33) by slitting her throat in their apartment in Nakshatra Tower near Golden Nest Circle. He then walked to a nearby mall, returned with a set of knives, phenyl and room-freshening sprays, cut Madhuwanti’s body into pieces and hid it in the refrigerator. Girish then called up his cousin Nitin Gadre, confessed to killing his wife and sought his help in dispose off her body. Gadre immediately alerted the Navghar police who reached the spot, recovered the severed body and arrested Girish. A prima-facie investigation revealed that the mother of the deceased was a French national who was married to an Indian, Shyam Bihari Phatak. Girish and Madhuwanti tied the knot in 2011 after a brief courtship while they worked at a mall in Mumbai. The couple, who have a two-year-old son,

(Below) Girish Pote, the unrepentant monster husband, with the Bhayandar police, yesterday. had moved into the rented accommodation just seven months ago. “It appears that Madhuwanti had recently sold off property in Mahim owned by her parents and received Rs.62 lakh from the sale. Girish wanted to start a restaurant and constantly pestered his wife for money, leading to quarrels and sometimes violent fights,”

12,” said SPI Dinkar Pingle. Girish, who is now cooling his heels in the lock-up of the Navghar police appears to be calm and remorseless of the heinous crime he has committed. He reportedly claims that Madhuwanti would constantly issue threats of leaving for France with their son Adrian and settling there with her aunt as she hated India.

food, and unhygienic cooking environment has created an unhealthy environment for students. On Saturday, a team of MU senators visited the JBIMS institute to meet the institute’s director about a particular issue. On their visit, the senators inspected the canteen and were shocked to see the low level of hygiene. The kitchen was unclean and the food was kept un-covered. The cooking gas had food spilled on it and the leftovers and garbage were placed in containers while egg shells and rotten vegetables were found lying open. Pradeep Sawant, Senate Member, MU, told the ADC, “JBIMS is a top institute in the state which students opt for as their first preference and this is what the canteen provides. This canteen is a risk, because if food cooked here is consumed by students, they may fall ill. The JBMIS should look into this matter before it’s too late”. As per the rules and regulations, a college canteen should hold a food and health license from the Municipal Corporation. If at all a college does not hold this license, the Municipal Corporation can close down the canteen. When the ADC tried to contact Dr. Kavita Laghate, Director, JBIMS, she was not available for comment. When the ADC spoke to Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, he said, “Colleges and institutes are responsible for the condition of the infrastructure and should provide students with a hygienic and healthy environment. MU has got to know of the condition of the JBIMS canteen and the varsity will soon send a committee to inspect it.”

he saffron alliance scored an emphatic victory against the ruling Nationalist Congress PartyCongress coalition in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Sharad Patil was elected chairman of the crucial standing committee. The BJP's win is being seen as a huge setback to the NCP, and the Congress party was left red-faced after one of the members, owing loyalty to the NCP, mysteriously remained absent during the election process which was held at the main administrative building of the MBMC on Wednesday under the supervision of Mumbai city collector Chandrashekhar Oak. Given the fact that the ruling NCP-Congress alliance and BJP-led opposition command an equal strength of

However, thanks to the mysterious absence of outgoing chairman Raju Bhoir of the Bahujan Vikas Party (BVA), the election became a virtual cake-walk for Sharad Patil, who bagged eight votes, defeating Congress nominee Hansu Kumar Pandey, who garnered seven votes.

Interestingly, Boir himself had filed his nomination papers on the virtue of the support lent by two BJP members who had proposed and seconded his nomination papers, indicating at a calculated game plan of backing the BVA nominee. For the BJP, Patil’s win was crucial as it would tilt the power scales in the MBMC which has been under the control of the NCP-Congress for a long time now.

Vashi RTO to display unclaimed VIP numbers By Khushboo Panjabi

he deputy Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Vashi has decided to display a list of unclaimed VIP registration numbers on their television screens. Those interested, however, will have to shell out much more than before in order to obtain a VIP registration number. As compared to the previous charges of Rs. 1 lakh

and Rs. 25,000 for four and two wheelers respectively, the current price for the number one is Rs. 4 lakh for fourwheelers and Rs. 50,000 for two-wheelers. For other numbers like 99, 111, 222 and others, one will have to pay Rs. 75, 000 for four wheelers and Rs. 50, 000 for two wheelers as against the earlier Rs. 50, 000 and Rs. 10,000. Sanjay Daygude, Dy. RTO, Vashi, said, “An order has

been received from the transport commissioner and the system will be installed at the earliest which will display all unclaimed VIP numbers”. Only 5 per cent of motorists are choosing VIP registration numbers at present. While 350 cars were registered at Vashi deputy RTO in the first quarter, only 20 motorists applied for VIP numbers. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

account while charging toll from the public, the court on Wednesday asked the state government to explain its policy on charging tolls within two weeks. In March this year, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the division bench had said that it expected the state government to come up with a policy to ensure that the public does not suffer because of deficient or incomplete work by the contractor. The court was hearing a PIL filed by one Shashikant Changede, represented by advocate Uday Warunjikar, regarding incomplete work

on the state highway between Pune and Shirur. According to the PIL, the contractor, Ashoka Buildcon Ltd, won the bid to construct the 64-km stretch between Pune and Shirur, for which work started in 2003. The company was allowed to collect toll in 2005 despite the work being incomplete, with a condition that the project should be completed within the next 60 days, the PIL stated. Thousands of commuters refused to pay the toll, leading to arguments, following which the contractor filed complaints against around 70,000 people. While hearing the petition on Wednesday, the bench asked the state government to file an affidavit and explain why the contractors appointed by the government were collecting a toll

despite a letter written by the Public Works Department (PWD) to stop the levying of such an amount. Ashutosh Kumbhkoni, a senior lawyer who has been appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) in this case, suggested today that in view of allegations raised in the PILs, the renewal of the quarterly period for collecting road tax for the next term beginning January 2014, should be allowed by the High Court only after hearing all parties. The court said, “If the state collects toll from private citizens, it is obliged to maintain the roads. The government does not seem to have any established norms for dealing with situations where the contractors continue to collect toll on bad roads.”

T could be because I had just returned from Srinagar when BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi made his comments about Article 370 that I found them so noteworthy. Unfortunately, what he said was immediately misunderstood by almost everyone. colours of autumn. In the Shalimar Gardens the Chinar trees that had not yet lost their leaves were luminous with sunlight glinting off gold, yellow and orange hues. We wandered up to Pari Mahal and took pictures of fat, overblown roses and we shopped for shawls and chain stitch rugs and on our second day in Kashmir drove out to see the magnificent ruins of Avantipora. On the way we stopped to buy freshly harvested saffron in a shop that also sold almonds and walnuts and honey from Afghanistan. And, wherever we went people told us that the Kashmiri people now wanted peace and normalcy and that it had almost returned. “Nobody wants the militancy to continue,” they said “everyone wants peace.” But, we also met people who told us that Kashmir had never been part of India but only a colony that had been cruelly exploited.

Personally, I have no idea whether he thought deeply before saying what he did but if he did not then it could be time for him to start doing so. This is because if he does become prime minister he needs to be sure that he does not make the mistake that Atal Behari Vajpayee did which was to continue with the same Kashmir policy that Congress governments have followed since Jawaharlal Nehru made the mistake of sending Sheikh Abdullah to jail in the fifties. T is said in the Hadith, “God is beautiful, and He loves beauty.” This expresses the truth that man, who inherits the Spirit of God, has beauty in him and loves beauty, although that which is beautiful to one is not beautiful to another. Man cultivates the sense of beauty as he evolves, and prefers the higher aspect of beauty to the lower. Man has worshipped God, beholding the beauty of sun, moon, stars, and planets. He has worshipped God in plants, in animals. He has recognized God in the beautiful merits of man, and he has with his perfect view of beauty found the source of all beauty in the unseen, from whence all this springs, and in who all is merged. The Sufi, realizing this, worships beauty in all its aspects, and sees the face of the Beloved in all that is seen and the Beloved’s spirit in the unseen. So wherever he looks his ideal of worship is before him. “Everywhere I look, I see Thy winning face; everywhere I go, I arrive at Thy dwelling-place.”

Sheikh Abdullah’s adamant stand that Kashmir would rather be part of secular India than Islamic Pakistan the Kashmir story may well have been a very different one. When I was researching my Kashmir book I could come up with no valid reason why the Sheikh should have been jailed at all. And, it was while I was researching this same book that I interviewed militant leaders who said they thought Vajpayee could find a lasting solution if he became prime minister. He was not prime minister at the time but had said on national television that if mosques were used to launch political movements then you could be sure that Hindu temples would be as well. The militant leaders I talked to said they found Vajpayee’s frankness refreshing, especially when they compared it with the ‘duplicity’ of the Congress Party. It is India’s bad luck that after becoming prime minister, Vajpayee found no time to make a new Kashmir policy.

Hazrat Ali says, “Know thyself, and thou shall know God.” It is the knowledge of self, which blooms into the knowledge of God. Self-knowledge answers such problems as: “Whence have I come? Did I existed before I became conscious of my present existence” if I existed, as what did I exist? As an individ-

MATTER & SPIRIT ual such as I now am, or as a multitude, or as an insect, bird, animal, spirit, jinn, or angel? What happens at death, the change to which every creature is subject? Why do I tarry here awhile? What purpose have I to accomplish here? What is my duty in life? In what does my happiness consist, and what is it that makes my life miserable? Those whose hearts have been kindled by the light from above, begin to ponder such questions but those whose souls are already illumined by the knowledge of the self understand them. It is

So if Modi does end up as the BJP’s second prime minister then he should already start thinking about what needs to be done beyond rethinking Article 370. A good start would be for him to examine the historical mistakes that were made and that included rigged elections and the denial of basic political rights in exchange for cheap rice and the ostensible ‘pampering’ of Kashmir. This socalled pampering caused hostility towards ‘ungrateful’ Kashmiris in the rest of India and did very little to improve living standards in Kashmir. He needs to look very carefully at why a new phase of the Kashmir problem was created after the toppling of Farooq Abdullah’s government in 1984. If he does, he may discover that the historical Kashmir problem had died by the eighties and that it was reborn only because people were denied their fundamental democratic rights. And, Modi needs to examine why jihadists have so changed the culture of the Kashmir Valley that cinemas remain closed even today and little girls are forced to wear the hijab in a state where women with uncovered faces once prayed beside men in mosques. So much blood and water has flowed down the Jhelum since then that there will be no real peace in Kashmir until there is a fresh approach taken towards solving India’s oldest and most intransigent political problem. they who give to individuals or to the multitudes the benefit of their knowledge, so that even men whose hearts are not yet kindled, and whose souls are not illuminated, may be able to walk on the right path that leads to perfection. This is why people are taught in various languages, in various forms of worship, in various tenets in different parts of the world. It is the same truth; it is only seen in diverse aspects to the people and the time. The Sufi recognizes the knowledge of self as the essence of all religions; he traces it in every religion, he sees the same truth in each, and therefore he regards all as one. Hence he can realize the saying of Jesus; “I and my Father are one.” The difference between creature and Creator remains on his lips, not in his soul. This is what is meant by union with God. It is in reality the dissolving of the false self in the knowledge of the true self, which is divine, eternal, and all pervading. “He who attaineth union with God, his very self must lose,” said Amir. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2013

No lessons learnt DON’T GIVE A DAMN! Even five years after the terror attacks on Mumbai, not much has changed in terms of security in the city and across the nation. FIVE years ago, Mumbaikars witnessed a gruelling terror attack starting late night on November 26 and lasting thereafter for several hours and thereby in the process taking nearly 200 lives and injuring a couple of hundreds of this financial capital of India. One of the world’s best hotels got ravaged beyond recognition and took several months to bounce back to what it is today in view of the owner Tatas’ indomitable spirit and exemplary courage. However, till date we despair on the fronts of coastal security which is imperiled by a lack of care by the state and the centre. Pricey boats were ordered but are

hardly operational for an abysmal lack of maintenance. It is indeed essential to protect our coast with a more intrusive and vigilant effort to obviate such attacks in future. I pray in respect of the souls of those who laid down their lives during this unprecedented catastrophe on that fateful day. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

assumed office as Home Minister once again. Law and order problem persists and the police force is trying hard to bring peace in the business capital. But the bureaucrats and politicians have other ideas. The symbol of Mumbai, Hotel Taj had gone to pieces. The jawans who suffered injuries are still waiting to get aid from the government. The victims’ kin could not get funds allotted to them by the state and central government. The hanging of Kasab is the only consolation. Everyone has vested interests. The NSG is a force to reckon with. However, in the terror attack, they killed our own hostages by throwing hand grenades and petrol bombs. It is time to take corrective steps and punish the erring people. —Anandambal Subbu, Sanpada

TERROR Threat: Even though Mumbai is lauded as a business centre, the 26/11 terror attacks tell a different story. No commercial capital of a country would be so ill equipped to not be able to detect and prevent such attacks on time. While some may argue that Manhattan was a victim of 9/11, I point out that Mumbai has been a soft target since times immemorial. Terror has sneaked up on us not once, like our US

counterpart, but thrice -1992 riots, 2006 blasts and 2008 attacks; all caught Mumbai unawares. In short, for Mumbai to truly become India’s commercial hub, the quality of life, quality of infrastructure, quality of security and attitude – all need improvement. — Chitra Krishnan, Seawoods

26/11 was the most horrifying day in the history of our country in general and Mumbai in particular as a handful of terrorist sent shock waves across the globe with acts of terrorism which still send vibrations up our spine when we recollect the events. Five years down the line and nothing seems to have changed in our city which remains as vulnerable as it was. Mumbaikars are often praised for their bravery in a manner in which we deal with the situation and the city normalises in a matter of days from the shocker which is untrue. Do people really have an option? CCTV cameras are non functional at most places and so are other security measures like scanning machines etc. Cops are still without weapons. It is time to beef up all security measures to international standards as there is no dearth of capital and money in the city.

Wedding trends

S

o, you’ve got your outfit sorted out and we just helped pick out your jewellery, but what about your makeup? Glitter, smoky eyes, glossy makeup and bold, berry lips are the latest in bridal makeup trends and if you’re finalising your look, make sure you get some of this in it. We speak to makeup expert Subhash Shinde who tells us about the trends and brings you some tips to look like a star on your wedding day.

trends to watch out For Subhash, who has a list of celebrity clients including Sushmita Sen and Raveena Tandon, tells us that the recent trend for brides is to follow their favourite celebrities. Makeup with an indo-western touch is also in style, though a lot of brides opt to go completely traditional for the ceremony itself. He tells us what trends are making it really big this season:

2013

lip enhanceMents: This is a trend that’s very common among both Bollywood and Hollywood actresses. Lately though, it seems to have caught on with brides as well! Subhash tells us, “Brides get a lip enhancement injection done just two days before their wedding. This gives them the perfect pout and helps to get their lips in shape.” sMoky eyes: There’s a reason why Subhash recommends this trendy look for brides this season. “As it’s an emotional day for the bride, they usually cry, spoiling their eye makeup. So, instead of mascara, it’s best to wear artificial eyelashes.” This will give you a sultry, smoky eye look without causing your mascara to run down your face. Also, to make your eyes look more appealing, the trend for this season is heavy kajal to perfect the smoky eye look.

We know you’re going to want to look your absolute best as a bride and making sure your makeup is perfect is an important step in the right direction. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you about the makeup trends that are all the rage this season

dia Mirza

For the party girl who wants to dress up like Barbie, this pink, subtle gold and silver outfit is just for you. Even though the work is heavy, the overall design is still fun and young. However, we wish that the jewllery worn here would have been a little simple.

Okay we know it looks half sherwani and half ball gown, but we actually like it. It’s unusual and Dia carries it off well. The colour and drape of the skirt is beautiful and doesn’t take away from the intricate coat, which we would have preferred cropped.

glossy Makeup: Since bridal season is mostly during winter, Subhash says there’s a chance of your look getting ruined because of dryness. In order to avoid this beauty blunder, he suggests sticking with a trendy, glossy look. Leave matte effects for the day and indulge in glossy makeup to make you look as glamorous as a celebrity on D-Day.

get going l Sport a bold lip for the wedding season. Colours such as rich plum and bold berry are good options. Wear lip liner to help keep the colour in place. l There’s no better time to get a little shimmer into your look. A little sparkle on your eye lids or a glitter lipgloss over your lipstick will do the trick. Remember not to overdo it; add glitter to either your lips or your eyelids, not both. l If you wear your hair loose, remember to keep your makeup minimal so that it doesn’t clash or look over-the-top. l Natural pink is a good colour for your cheeks. Make sure that if it’s not matte, you get an oil control foundation so that your skin doesn’t look extra oily on your big day. l Enhance your brows with a touch of liner as it will give them more definition in your bridal pictures. l Don’t forget to contour your cheeks with a bronzer. l If you want a soft look, a rose palette is really in style right now. Complement a rose lip with soft blush and sparkly nude eye shadow. l Emerald eye shadow is really big too — especially in metallic tones. This goes perfectly with most Indian bridal outfits. l If green isn’t your colour, opt for a glossy lilac look as that’s also in style. l If you want to be a colourful bride, opt for shades of turquoise.

« the top 5: ear cuffs we love 1. diagold This jewelled ear cuff from Diagold, although slightly heavy, is exquisite and perfect for a fancy event or a wedding. Pair it with a gown and minimal makeup for a formal look that exudes class. price: On request

« just out! vlcc Mani-pedi kit The kit contains a cleanser, cuticle oil, scrub, cream and an anti-tan pack. The first thing I tried was the Pediglow Hand and Foot scrub. It has a pleasant lemongrass and walnut smell and promises to remove dull, dead and dry skin. While it effectively scrubbed off the dead skin on the soles of my feet, my hands didn’t look any different, even after two weeks of use. The hand and foot cleanser is really impressive though — it shows magical effects and not only lightens the skin colour of your feet but also smoothens and cleans it thoroughly. It also made my hands softer. The hand and foot cream, with cocoa butter, is a little more greasy than necessary and takes some while to get absorbed in the skin. However, once absorbed, the moisture stays on for approximately six hours. price `475 for the entire kit where Beauty stores across the city star rating ** (scrub) ***** (cleanser) *** (cream)

« 5 ways to rock: ear cuffs Ear cuffs are hot this season. Shirley Mistry tells you how to wear them best 1. Fuss-Free hair The whole purpose of wearing an ear cuff is to show it off! Choose a hairstyle that keeps your hair away from your ears. For a softer look, side-swept hair works well. Alternatively, a top knot, loose bun or even a simple ponytail will do the trick.

2. house oF chic If you’re aiming for a look that’s more edgy and rock-chic, this ear cuff from House of Chic is your best bet. The chains give it some weight and are the perfect addition to your look. price: `4,300

2. pair it well There are plenty of ways to wear an ear-cuff. Pair it with a floral dress or a sari to give your look an edge or team it with a simple white shirt and jeans. Go extreme and pair a chunky ear cuff with a white tee, leather jacket, jeans and boots to channel your inner rocker. 3. Makeup essentials A clean look works well. Winged liner, or a smoky eye works wonders to draw attention to your ears. Alternatively, skip the liner, pile on mascara with a bold plum or burgundy lip to let your ears do all the talking.

3. toniq For a more feminine accessory to a flowy maxi or dress, pick this ear cuff from Toniq to lend a bohemian vibe to your look. We love the sparkling dangles and the cute star at the top. price `239

chitrangada singh

There’s too much going on with this outfit, which makes it stand out for all the wrong reasons. And if Chitrangada manages to look frumpy in it, imagine what we mere mortals will look like? The top is too poofy which distracts from the skirt, which is actually lovely.

«

evelyn sharMa

This one’s for the traditional bride. The gold and red is a classic combination and the elaborate detailing on the skirt is sure to make you stand out. It’s also the right mix of sexy and classy. Perhaps you could omit the flower basket on your head though.

«

urvashi rautela

A good example of east meeting west, this outfit has all the touches of an Indian wedding but with a western silhouette. The bead work on the bodice is the focus of attention, but we can’t help but marvel at the delicate skirt. A lovely look!

4. accessorise The ear cuff works best when worn by itself. When choosing to wear one, skip other accessories. Necklaces and chains add clutter and tend to overpower an ear cuff. For maximum impact, let it be your sole accessory or pair it with a statement ring or a cuff bracelet.

4. toniq Paired with a white shirt and denims, this pretty leaf inspired ear cuff will set you apart from the rest. Pick up this pair from Toniq to add some spunk to your plainJane look. price `269 5. perniaspopupshop.coM With enamel work and stones in bright colours, this pair of ear cuffs from Pernia’s pop-up Shop is cute and easy to wear. Pair it with a crop top and shorts. These cuffs are easy on the eyes and great if you’re just getting comfortable with the trend. price `2,000

pond’s Face wash Pond’s Complete Solution Pimple-Clear face wash promises to fight pimples and brighten your skin. I didn’t have acne spots, so I can’t say how effective the face wash is against existing acne. But, I did observe a small spot that would have otherwise turned into a full-blown pimple. Using the face wash twice a day made the spot disappear in one day. It takes care of excess oil really well; my face felt smooth and fresh. And, it does have visible skin brightening results. Overall, it delivers everything that you’d expect from a face wash — it prevents acne, brightens your skin and leaves your face feeling fresh and soft. It gets a big thumbs up from me. price `135 for 100g where Beauty stores across the city star rating *****

>> Jessica Alba keeps her ear cuff in focus by sporting minimal makeup and a sleek top knot hairstyle

5. pick the right one Ear cuffs make for great conversation starters, but only if you pick the right ones. If you’re pairing them with a basic outfit, opt for something that isn’t too chunky. Leave the heavier stuff for a night out. Studded or spiked ear cuffs add an interesting contrast to your outfit. Also, ornate ear cuffs, with jewels and elaborate detailing, such as a bunch of leaves, make for interesting accessories to match a maxi or gown you may wear for a formal event.

Child’s play

F

rom the pure innocence of childhood to the love and affection that children display, working with them is fulfilling. If you’ve always enjoyed being around children, there’s a good chance that you’d be happy working with them as well. There are several places looking for responsible adults to help out with childcare and teaching. Take a look at some options:

assist at a school

Shutterstock

Love being around children? Then we’re sure that you’ll love working with them. Dev Goswami tells you how you can do so without having a specialised degree >> You can hold workshops at home to teach children arts and crafts

This is one of the simplest ways you can work with children without being a babysitter. From an extra hand during school trips and functions to assisting in preschool classes and playgroups, schools often need help from parents of their pupils. Visit PTA meetings or contact a school to find out how you can help.

volunteer at an ngo Volunteering at NGOs might take up a lot of your time but the rewards can be fruitful. The best part is that no matter what your background, there is always something you can do. NGOs, such as Make a Wish Foundation India and Akanksha, are good places to start. While the former has openings for volunteers, the latter lets you teach. We recommend you visit www.makeawishindia.org and www.akanksha.org for more information on how you can help.

tutor them at home Let us be clear. We are not fans of 5-year-olds going for tuitions. So, we are not suggesting that. This is for those who excel in a particular subject and want to share their expertise with students. This job will come with a lot of responsibilities. So, only take it up if you’re confident you can handle it.

hold workshops & classes Feel that you have skills which don’t fall under the regular school curriculum? Then organising a workshop is the way to go. You’ll need to figure out the logistics and will have to rent a space if your house isn’t big enough. If you can manage that, a workshop can prove to be fun. From arts and crafts to cooking and baking, there’s a lot that you can teach. And with social media, spreading the word about your workshops will be easy.

help at a vacation camp This is for those who can’t take out time from their daily lives. But, looking for vacation camps to help out at will takes a while. The best way to go about hunting for one would be to look up social media for ongoing camps and contact them to know how you can be a part of them in the future.

find out how to deal with a messy eater

recycled products from Jaypore

At my workplace, we have a common area where employees eat their lunch. Most of us spread a newspaper below our plates before we eat, to keep the area clean. However, I have noticed that one of my colleagues doesn’t use newspaper, spills food on the table and doesn’t bother cleaning up! It is uncouth to leave the table so dirty, making it uncomfortable and off-putting for the others to eat after she has used the space. How do I tackle the situation? — chandni mehta, andheri dear chandni, It seems like your colleague is extremely inconsiderate. Not only is her behaviour inappropriate and unhygienic, it is also disrespectful to everyone else who may need to use the space. Next time you see her eating at

the same time, try to make some small talk with her. Once she leaves, go up to her after some time and explain to her that you noticed that she had “forgotten” to clean up after she ate. If she fails to take the subtle hint, try putting up a notice in the lunch room or send a mail out with rules to be followed while eating at office. If all else fails, you and another colleague should take her aside and tell her firmly that she needs to be clean. I work for a small setup where there are only 12 of us in the entire office. Every morning, before we start working, my team leader insists that we all pray together. Although I go along with the group prayer every morning, I don’t want to be a part of it, as it’s not my idea of religion or spirituality. What is

the best way to deal with this situation? — sunanda khera, Bandra (w) dear sunanda, The best way to deal with this situation would be to simply go along with it. Protesting or complaining may make you come across as stubborn and nit-picky. Be a part of the ceremony in good spirit, even if it is only out of sheer respect for the others’ faith — you don’t have to believe in it. Alternatively, if it is really bothering you, you can have a word with your team leader and explain the situation to him if you think he will receive it well. Ideally, see it as a team building exercise and don’t let it affect your sentiments. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday

The collection includes recycled items such as the headlight of a scooter, used hammers, door latches and other seemingly useless things. Some of the products include an orange hi-beam scooter light lamp (we really love this one!), a cycle seat that has been used to make a bar stool and a cute paper weight that has been crafted out of a hammer. « 5 WAYS TO: USE EMPTY WINE BOTTLES With the festive season upon us, we’re sure you have more than your fair share of empty wine bottles lying around after the parties. Priyanka Singh tells you how to use empty wine bottles creatively 1. vase Wine bottles are the perfect shape for a vase if you ask us. Home improvement It’s exciting to decorate a new home, but if you’ve got small children, your new furniture could take a beating or be victim to a crayon or two. Rhea Dhanbhoora shows you how to plan a kid-friendly home

L

et’s face it. No matter how much you discipline your child — your furniture and furnishings are going to see accidents, spills, marks and dents while your children are growing up. Instead of getting worked up about your ruined couch and crayon stained wall, we suggest a little renovation. If you’re planning for a new home, a new baby or just re-doing your home, here are a few tips you should keep in mind to make it more child-friendly:

sofas Keeping your sofas from getting ruined with spots, marks, scratches and scrapes is hard when you’ve got a precocious child to deal with. Invest in microfibre sofas as they’re easy to clean and have water repellent properties which make them hard to stain. They also last much longer and don’t snag or fray. Also, they’re durable as well as easy to maintain. If your children are well-behaved, you could opt for leather or vinyl (faux leather). Vinyl is cheaper but cracks faster than leather. Both can be cleaned easily but if your child has a habit of plucking and scratching, you’ll need a new sofa in no time. The best option is to get a slipcover, so you can change and wash it when needed.

paint If you’re buying a home, you should paint it sensibly, even if you don’t have children

yet. Think of crayon marks, dirty hands trailing along the wall and crazy ball marks denting your coat of paint. Natural paints are a good option. You also get paints (from any major paint brand in the market) that don’t contain lead and mercury that harm your health and are safe for children. An added advantage is that they keep your walls safe from your children’s grimy hands. You get stain resistant paint, paint that’s easy to wipe clean with soap and water and scrub resistant to prevent marks and chipping.

Chairs If you can afford heavy, good quality wooden chairs, your children probably won’t be able to get to them. Durable options are oak and cherry. But, anything lighter and you’ll see them digging out holes in the framework sooner rather than later. If you have a big house, you can have separate plastic chairs for children. There are firm plastic chairs that look great and work well as far as withstanding endless tugging and pulling goes. The only problem is that they might not match the rest of your décor. A good alternative are the currently stylish metalwork chairs. You can pick them up in attractive colours and designs and they’re extremely durable, especially when they are to be used indoors. Place a cushion on the seat and you’ve got perfect

chairs that your children won’t be able to bite, poke, scrape or scratch through.

Curtains & Covers Rugs, cushion covers and curtains — think of them combined with an extremely naughty child. Wool is a bad idea because it requires dry cleaning. Cotton is your best bet because it can be cleaned easily. But, if your kids are prone to spillages, it will absorb everything very fast. Polyester does well in this department, as it resists waterborne stains and won’t be that hard to clean. Again, microfibre is best but if you want cotton or lace curtains, just make sure that they’re not floor length. As long as your little one can’t reach up to ruin them, they’ll be just fine. If you can get your hands on Crypton fabric, you should, as it’s extremely stain resistant.

tabLes The most important thing to remember when you’re buying a new table is not to get one with a loose top. It may be tempting to get a glass topped table but unless it’s fixed permanently, it can spell disaster if you’ve got children running around as they have a habit of leaning, shifting around and tugging at things. Try getting a coffee table with a chalkboard surface. This way, you won’t be heartbroken when your children start to scribble all over it — which they will. It is just a matter of time!

2. Lamps This is the most popular way to use wine bottles. Get an inch wide hole drilled from a glassware shop on the bottom of the bottle. Once the hole is drilled, push fairy lights into the bottle. Use a flattened out hanger with a small hook at the end to help you bring the lights up into the bottle. Leave the last bit of cord and plug free. You can also add glass beads to the bottle for another look. 3. for shapeLy shoes Tuck bottles into the shafts of winter footwear so that they stay upright. Sneakers, pumps and peep-toes made of soft materials tend to lose their shape if kept in shoe boxes. In order to keep them in shape, slide them atop standing bottles. 4. JeweLLery stand Turn everyday bottles into jewellery holders in under a few minutes. How? Just stack bracelets around the neck for an effortless display. 5. CandLe hoLders There are many ways to turn a wine bottle into a candle holder depending on what look you are going for. A quick, easy and effective look is to stick a tapered candle in the lid of the bottle (instead of the cork) and when the candle burns, the wax will melt down the bottle creating a romantic and rustic looking candle holder.

PUT A RING ON IT!

« SOS: SOLVE OUR SITUATION! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Kavita and I are Jacki’s bridesmaids. Jacki is the sweetest girl and bride-to-be ever! We have both gladly been running around for her. Her sister-in-law to-be has often offered to help, but...

If you’re going to get married soon, chances are you already have your heart set on a ring. Shirley Mistry tells you how to get the engagement ring you want

We barely know her and to be honest, don’t really like her. She is quite fake. But, she really wanted to help and when she insisted (with lots of guilt giving) that she hosts Jacki’s bachelorette party, we pretty much were rail-roaded into saying, ‘Okay.’ Uh...uh.. okay..? Come on! Let me!

Shutterstock

Yesterday was the ‘BIG DO’... Jacki was so excited! But, when we got there it was literally a bunch of balloons, fruit punch, a small bowl of guacamole and a bowl of chips. That was it. For twenty of us. Luckily, someone brought cake and games and we ordered pizza. The night was not a total disaster, but it was pretty bad...

I

f you’re making a lifetime commitment to someone, there are bound to be a thousand things you’re juggling at the same time. While we know you’d be perfectly happy — ring or no ring, it is the one piece of jewellery that will stay with you for the rest of your life. More than an investment, it commemorates your relationship. You don’t want something sitting on your finger that will make you cringe every time you look at it. We tell you how to get the engagement ring you really want.

Customise Choose this: If you are a new age, non-conformist couple Who said you have to pick a ring from a catalogue? If you want something that’s special to the two of you, go ahead and customise it. This way you will get the kind of ring you want and in all likelihood; it will be the only one of its kind in the world. Customisation lets you pick the best from the lot and gives you the opportunity to craft something that is a reflection of your relationship, with an engraved message perhaps.

Loud & CLear Choose this: If you tend to be a bit of a control freak

If you’re one of those women who have had your dream wedding planned since you were a five-year-old, chances are, you wouldn’t want anyone messing with your plans. You have a folder with ring options for every budget and if your partner wants to choose, he can do so from the list you have committed to memory. Show him pictures, post it on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or leave your laptop open with the picture as your background or screensaver. Basically, go all out and do whatever you want, just stopping short of asking him for it directly.

Let Fate deCide Choose this: If you are a hopeless romantic Throw caution to the wind and wait for your partner to do all the hard work. If he knows you well, he’ll know what you like and what your tastes are. Waiting for the ring can lead to an amazing surprise and will result in a story you will be able to tell for years to come. While being a diehard romantic is brilliant in theory, make sure you mention in passing things you absolutely dislike in a ring. This way, the ring you eventually get will be picked by your partner, but will not have any of the things you dislike. Best of both worlds, we’d say.

orChestrate it Choose this: If you want to take the subtle route If you’re slightly more traditional and want a surprise, but still want the ring of your choice, get a friend or sibling to go along. Brief your ally on the exact kind of ring you’d want to wear and make sure they have a steady stream of photos from your end. They are the people who know you best and will be able to pin point the things you like. Get them to get in touch with your partner and casually offer to go ring shopping with him when the time is right.

do it YourseLF Choose this: If you are the wise, practical one You love your partner and his taste, but you would much rather go pick out the ring with him. This way you get exactly what you want and it takes the pressure and stress off your partner without you having to compromise on any front. Browse through catalogues with each other and visit plenty of stores to make sure you get the best deal possible. If you’re in this together, might as well shop for the ring together too! This way you’ll can get matching rings that can further add to your romantic journey.

« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... dear Grace,

After a romantic dinner, my new boyfriend and I started making out. Unfortunately, while kissing him, I accidentally burped in his mouth. I started crying and judging by the look on his face, he was really grossed out. He left soon after and texted me when he got home saying it was okay. He hasn’t messaged or called me since. I don’t know what to do! —-- Kanika Jain, Chembur

dear Kanika, Trust me; this story will be funny in a few years. But right now, I understand how horrified you must be considering you’ve just started dating the guy. Sadly, you handled the situation wrong. Crying might have been your natural reflex but you should have held it down and laughed out loud. I’m sure it would have lightened the mood and bitter taste in his mouth. But, what’s done is done. So now,

I could tell that Jacki was disappointed. Heaven knows Kavita and I were kicking ourselves for letting the sis-in-law-to-be take charge. But, being Jacki she was still so gracious and sweet... and made such an effort to see that everyone had a nice time in spite of the obvious effort to sabotage what should have been a fun night.

you need to call him up and tell him you want to meet him… face to face. Tell him that you like and care about him and that you would want to take the relationship forward and forget about what happened. If he’s a nice guy, he’ll laugh, reassure you and continue as normal. If he makes a big deal, he’s really too stuck up. You’re better off without him. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

Then, as we were leaving, sis-in-law-to-be corners Kavita and me and hands us a slip of paper. Basically, the bill for the balloons, punch, chip and dip! Hee hee... since you’ll are the bridesmaids. Was fun, no?

"And I swear she had marked up everything by at least 50%! We are furious! And so disappointed for Jacki. What can we do to make it better and take away this bitter taste?” — Furious a) First things first. As there is still time, organise a super fun bachelorette party for Jacki. She deserves one. And, don’t invite her sis-in-law! Then ask sis-in-law for actual bills, not her own. b) What’s done is done. Make sure Jacki knows who was in charge of the fiasco. And keep sis-in-law away from anything else that is important. c) Have a word with the sinister-in-law. DON’T PAY! LAST WEEK: Janice should pick option A: You need to make it clear to her that you have a life beyond her wedding. Do it gently though, because brides can be very emotional as it is a very stressful time for them. But, don’t let her bully you!

After a hiatus, Manav Gohil has re-surfaced with Sudhir Sharma's ‘The Buddy Project’ on Channel V and is also seen on ‘Zindagi Khelti Hai Aankh Micholi’ on Zee TV. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Manav about his career plans.

What have been the landmarks of your career? When I won ‘Man of Gujarat’ and moved to Mumbai to try my luck. My first look test was approximately in 1999 for a Ponds commercial which I was pathetic in and rejected for. I learnt to be better from all my failures. How did you get The Buddy Project? I auditioned and got selected. The producers are professional friends of mine and we have been wanting to work together for so long. Finally things have worked out.

Manav Gohil is back

How much do you relate to your character? Basically, every character of mine has a bit of Manav in them. This time I figured there's a bit of Anirudh Jaitley in Manav. I explored the character and discovered that it's a part of me. How is it working for producer Sudhir Sharma (Sunshine Productions)? It's been super. What a

team! It's always been absolutely comfortable and a partylike atmosphere to be working with the producer. He's so creative and is 100 per cent involved in every activity.

What was your experience working in ‘Mahadev’? It was a cameo and the shoot lasted for just 15 days. So I spent my time trying to get to know people and getting into my costume and character. I didn’t have much time to mingle, but the experience was nice. It's a rewarding show and role and I'm glad I took it up. You had three shows on air, ‘Mahadev’, ‘Khelti hai Jindagi Aankh Micholi’ and ‘The Buddy Project’ which is a co-incidence. Many years ago you had a similar experience with ‘Kkusum’, ‘Sara Akash’ and others. How do you feel? It feels really nice! I feel young again. Work keeps you going. There's a sense of satisfaction and I hope it continues. What are your interests other than acting? I love watching films and am a complete sports person. I love soccer, cricket, swimming and I'm lately into daddyhood.

Does having a wife from the same industry help? What are your common interests? It does because you get a fresh insight from someone who is in the same profession and is yet close to you. We love watching movies together. She's like my buddy who accompanies me. Who are your close friends in the industry? Is it easy to be friends with people from the same industry? I have friends – but not close friends – in the industry. I am friends with Hussain Kuwajerwala, Sharad Kelkar and others.

FILM PROMOTION

‘Yeh Hai Aashiqui’ – the show that brings unconventional and touching love stories to its viewers every week – will be taking things a notch higher with its next episode where actors of the upcoming movie ‘What the Fish’ – Manjot Singh and Anand Tiwari – will play an integral part in the story. The episode revolves around a popular college boy Parth, who while wooing the girl of his dreams, falls in love with a sweet and plump girl from his college. Apart from Manjot

A

distinctive day in the Singh household starts off with an excited Dolly jumping at the opportunity to write for a teenage blog as part of her college project. However, things soon begin to go haywire as she reveals to Himani that she is short of time to complete her story. As Himani goes through Dolly’s unfinished work, she comes to the startling realisation that she used to write for the teenage blog when it was a magazine back in her college days. Things take an interesting turn when Himani decides to write her own story for the blog and submit it on Dolly’s behalf, without Dolly’s knowledge. Incidentally, the local television channel takes notice of her blog and decides to do a feature on it, but as always, there’s a catch. Himani now has to pretend to be Dolly, and Dolly has to play Himani, or they will end up losing a golden opportunity. Meanwhile, Rohan has some news of his own to share with Avtaar and Himaani, which might not generate a very positive response from them. To add to the ongoing chaos, Avtaar accidently sets loose a rare species of termites all over the house, putting the very foundation of their house in danger. Will Dolly be able to clean up the mess? Can Himani and Avtaar rescue their house? Does Rohan finally muster the courage to break the news to Avtaar and Himani? T

he pick-up in exports and decline in gold imports are likely to keep the country’s Current Account Deficit lower during the rest of the fiscal as compared to the same period last year. We expect the CAD to be lower in the remaining quarters of the FY’14 than the corresponding quarters in FY’13 in view of a pickup in exports and a significant drop in gold imports, India Ratings said in a research report, yesterday. In the July-September quarter, CAD narrowed to USD 5.2 billion, or 1.2 % of GDP, as against USD 21 billion, or 5 % of the GDP, in same period of last fiscal. Gold imports in Q2, 2013-14 dropped to USD 3.6 billion, from USD 16.4 billion in the April-June quarter due to hike in duties and other measures taken by the government to curb the inward shipments of the commodity, the report said. The report believes that despite the uneven global recovery, the momentum witnessed in exports growth will continue in the near

term as there are signs of improvement in both the US and the core economies of Eurozone. According to a recent estimate by International Monetary Fund, the US economy is expected to grow at 1.6 % in 2013, while Germany and France are expected to grow at 0.5 % and 0.2 %, respectively. “An improvement in the demand conditions in advanced economies coupled with rupee depreciation is helping merchandise exports, the report said. Merchandise exports increased 11.9 % to USD 81.2 billion in Q2 FY’14 from USD 73.9 billion in the first quarter. The depreciation of the rupee has improved competitiveness of Indian exports, particularly of textiles and textile products, leather and leather products and chemicals, the report added. It further said that though some increase in imports growth in second half of this fiscal is expected, it will be limited due to stable crude prices and lower gold imports. However, the report said that due to the nuclear deal with Iran, the tension in the Middle-East is likely

to ease leading to reduced volatility in crude prices. Despite lower CAD in Q2, FY’14, there was a drawdown of forex reserves to the tune of USD 10.4 billion from a drawdown of USD 0.2 billion in the same quarter last year, and USD 0.3 billion in Q1 FY’14 on a balance of payment (BoP) basis. “A decline in CAD alone is not going to shore up the BoP, attracting inflows through the capital and financial account is equally important to improve BoP and reduce the pressure on rupee to depreciate, the report said. Although attracting inflows through foreign direct investment (FDI) is always better, the other routes including the swap window introduced by the RBI will be helpful in the short term, the report said. The Reserve Bank had mobilised USD 34 billion through a special swap window for FCNR (B) funds and banks’ overseas borrowings. The central bank closed the swap window that was opened in September this year to garner forex reserves and to help rupee stabilise, on November 30.

Voters allege anomalies in electoral rolls, many use the NOTA option

N

THE VOTE IS CAST! UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after casting their votes for Delhi Assembly elections at Nirman Bhawan polling station in New Delhi on Wednesday.

N

EW DELHI: Around 65 per cent polling was recorded in the Delhi Assembly election yesterday even as long queues of people were seen at the booths past the voting deadline of 5 pm. “Around 65 per cent polling has been recorded. But the figure may change as we are compiling all the data. Around 70,000 people are still standing in queue,” a senior official of Delhi Election Commission said. He said people who queued before

5 pm are being allowed to vote. Polling has also been extended in booths where voting started late due to snag in electornic voting machies. In 2008 assembly polls, the overall voting percentage was 57.58 per cent. Earlier, Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev said he expected the final percentage of voting to be between 70 and 75 per cent. There were reports of malfunctioning of electronic voting machines (EVM)

EW DELHI: A section of voters here chose to exercise the newly-introduced ‘None Of The Above Option’ (NOTA) option yesterday saying they have “little expectations” from any of the political parties engaged in the electoral battle. “This election has given us a unique opportunity of pressing the NOTA button,” said Arvind Tyagi who listed a host of problems faced by his colony in Vikaspuri in West Delhi. Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai arrested in sexual assault case N

EW DELHI/SURAT: Self-styled godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, who was absconding for the last 58 days in connection with a sexual assault case filed by a Suratbased girl, was on Wednesday arrested by the Delhi Police from the Delhi- Haryana border. “He (Sai) was arrested today morning by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police from the Delhi-Haryana border. He was produced in a court in Rohini in the afternoon where his transit remand was sought for being brought to Surat,” Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana told media persons. Four disciples of 41year-old Sai—Bhavika, Vishnu, Ramesh and Hanuman—were also arrested along with him, he said. Delhi Police sources said Sai had disguised himself as a Sikh man to evade being caught. A reward of Rs.5 lakh had been announced for information leading to his arrest. “He was sporting a red colour turban and a beard. He was wearing a T-shirt, pant and sports jacket in order to conceal his real identity,” they said. The Surat Police had registered two complaints by two sisters -one against Asaram and the other against Sai -- of rape, sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges. The younger of the two sisters had filed the complaint against Sai, accusing him of re-

Asthana said in Surat, “Bhavika was the manager of Asaram’s ashram in Ahmedabad. She was in constant touch with Sai. We had put her under surveillance, following which we were able to net her.” Dismissing reports that Sai had fled to Nepal and Bangladesh, he said that the operation was successful because of human intelligence and technical surveillance. ANAJI: Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal, arrested for sexually assaulting a woman colleague, was today taken for a second round of medical tests here. Tejpal’s medical examination was earlier conducted on December 2 at Goa Medical College and Hospital. before a magistrate. “We have sought permission from the court to summon Chaudhury and three witnesses to record their statements before a magistrate,” a senior crime branch officer said. A team of Goa police had already recorded Chaudhury’s statement in Delhi before she quit as managing editor amid outrage over her attempts at covering up the raging scandal. Chaudhury’s statement is “very crucial” as she was the first person to have come to know of alleged sexual assault on the young journalist by Tejpal. Any statement or confession recorded by a metropolitan or judicial magistrate under section 164 of CrPC is admissible as evidence in a court.

Sacked employee cannot ask for re-employment after acquittal: SC N

EW DELHI: An employee, sacked following disciplinary proceedings, cannot seek reinstatement as a “matter of right” after a criminal court acquits him in the case based on the charges similar to the departmental inquiry, the Supreme Court has ruled. “There is no rule of automatic reinstatement on acquittal by a criminal court even though the charges levelled against the delinquent before the Enquiry Officer as well as the Criminal Court are the same,” a bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri said. It said the sacked policeman of West Bengal could not provide “any rule or regulation applicable

to police force stating that once an mployee has been acquitted by a criminal court, as a matter of right, he should be reinstated in service despite all the disciplinary proceedings.” The bench also cited a provision of the Police Regulations of Calcutta which provides that the outcome of the criminal trial will have no bearing on the punishment awarded to an employee in departmental proceeding in respect of the same case. It set aside the decisions of the Calcutta High Court and the West Bengal Administrative Tribunal which had asked the Kolkata police to reinstate sacked cop Sankar Ghosh after his acquittal by a criminal court in a case of dacoity.

GOOD HOMEWORK IS MUST BEFORE NEW SEASON: NICO HULKENBERG

N

EW DELHI: A day after his return to Sahara Force India, Nico Hulkenberg today insisted on doing a good ‘homework’ before the 2014 season, which will mark beginning of a new era in Formula One due to change in regulations. From 2014, F1 will have new regulations in place with the return of turbocharged engines for the first time since 1988. The new engines will be a 1.6 litre V6 format, replacing the 2.4 litre V8 engine configuration, used between 2006-2013. The engines will be limited to 15,000rpm and engine units must last for at least 4,000 km before being replaced. Earlier, engined were required to last for just 2,000 km. Hulkenberg, who raced for Force India’s closest mid-field rival Sauber in 2013, said he and

the team were aiming to get better results. “There are a lot of questions because we are entering a new era of Formula One and the regulations change quite drastically next year. All we can do is make sure we do our homework very well and hope we are doing the right things.” “The aim is always to get better. So much is changing and it’s impossible for anyone to predict what will happen next year. We should concentrate on ourselves and make sure we do our homework. Have to wait and see how competitive we are next year. Won‘t know until after the first couple of races,” the German racer said in a teleconference. Hulkenberg was earlier tipped to move to Lotus, where Pastor Maldonado eventually replaced Kimi Raikkonnen, but the deal

could not materialise. The German said the Indian team wanted him back so this was the best option for him. “I’m excited to be back. It’s a team I know very well. I’ve spent two years here before in 2011 and 2012, which will help me adapt back to the team quickly. Still a lot of people who I know from my time here. We have high aims together for next year. I hope we can meet those expectations. “During the later stages of the year (2013) I needed to make a decision on my future. Sahara Force India was able to give me the answers and the information I needed and wanted, different to other teams and I also really felt that they wanted me back and that they were pushing to have me back, so I made the decision to come back,” he said. Read your opponent’s mind: Staniforth’s advice to goalies

N

EW DELHI:A goalkeeper should be able to read into the opponent’s game to understand his next move, feels Indian coach Dave Staniforth. Staniforth, goalkeeping coach and strategic analyst of the Indian senior and junior men’s teams, said keeping is the most important job in hockey as well as being the most difficult position to master. “While all the players in the team understand their role, it is the goalkeeper’s role which I feel is in the most odd as he always has to be alert. My tip to the goalkeepers is to always be focused and wherever possible try reading the mind of the opponent which will help understand his next move or shot,” said Staniforth. The Indian junior team underwent a tough practice session at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the capital today ahead of their World Cup opener against The Netherlands on December 6. Staniforth said players of all teams are under “pressure” to perform well in the tournament. “The entire team is aiming at making the strategies work on the day of play,”he added.

We’ve worked on different strategies for each team: Pak coach N

EW DELHI: Pakistan have worked on different strategies for each team and would look to execute their plans in Hero Hockey Junior World Cup which begins here tomorrow, their coach Anjum Saeed said today. “We have worked on different strategies for each team in the tournament and I believe that following the same will help us win matches,” Saeed said after his

team’s practice match against Malaysia today. “The team showcased good rhythm and teamwork during practice. The understanding and bonding amongst the players and their fitness levels will prove to be an advantage for us when we take on opponents. The players are very enthusiastic and I see no single disadvantage in this team,” he said. Captain Umar Butta said his

CLARKE URGES AUSSIES TO KEEP FEET ON GROUND A

SPORTS

DELAIDE: Captain Michael Clarke today told his Australian team not to gloat after their emphatic first Ashes Test victory over England, and focus on winning again in the second match in Adelaide. The Australians trounced the Ashes holders by 381 runs in the opening clash at the Gabba for their first Test win over England in almost three years to make the early running in the five-Test series. Skipper Alastair Cook admitted his England side were “totally outplayed” in Brisbane, but Clarke urged his team to stay grounded heading into what is shaping up as a crucial Test in the series on Thursday. England fought back to draw the opening Test of the corresponding series in Brisbane three years ago before thumping Australia by an innings and 71 runs in Adelaide and going on to take the series 3-1. Clarke said the Australia side was a long way from being the team they wanted to be. “I’m excited by the way we played in Brisbane. But, if you look at our results over the past 12 months, we have no reason to brag, or gloat or be over the top,” he told reporters. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.

Every single player, their feet are well and truly on the ground. “Our celebration after Brisbane wasn’t anything like I’ve seen Australian teams celebrate when we’ve had big wins like that. “I think that’s because everybody knows we’re a long way from being the team we want to be. It’s only one Test win and we’ve got some work to do in this second Test and throughout the series.” Clarke named an unchanged team for Adelaide, the first time he has been able to do so since the corresponding match last summer against South Africa. “We looked at the wicket and thought about the extra bowling option with James Faulkner in the team,” he said. “But having Wato (Shane Watson) there, who is back to 100 percent fit, and capable of bowling in both innings is a real positive for the team. “We’ve seen through his career that his overs are crucial for this team. On good flat wickets like this wicket looks here I think his bowling is going to be very handy not just for taking wickets but also building pressure from one end.” Clarke vowed to maintain the same hard-nosed approach that Australia used to damaging effect against

England at the Gabba. The skipper was fined 20 percent of his match fee for threatening England tailender James Anderson with a broken arm in the first Test, while Cook was upset at opening batsman David Warner calling his team frightened, singling out batsman Jonathan Trott as “weak”. Trott withdrew from the Ashes tour after the first Test to deal with what was widely reported to be depression. “We’ll continue to play a tough brand of cricket on the field, but as we’ve all said, we know there’s a line you can’t cross,” Clarke said. “The respect hasn’t changed one bit. We still have the ultimate respect for our opposition. They’re a very tough team. I think you’ll see the England team come out bigger and stronger after losing in Brisbane and make it a real tough challenge for us in Adelaide.” Clarke said he was fit to play after turning his ankle during training on Monday. He batted in the nets Wednesday and reported no problems. “The ankle feels fine,” Clarke said. “I think not training yesterday obviously gave me an extra day.... I feel fine”.

AUGAVPILS (Latvia): Manan Chandra and Arantxa Sanchis today entered the knock-out stage of the IBSF World Snooker Championship even as other Indian cueists experienced a mixed day here. The duo joined Varsha Sanjeev and two-time bronze medallist Vidya Pillai, who had qualified yesterday. Chandra blanked Spain’s Francisco Rodriguez 4-0 in his last league match to top the six-player group with five wins. Sanchis, though, lost her final league match to China’s Chunxia Shi 0-3 but the 23-year-old joined her other countrymates in the knock-out phase after finishing second in her group with five wins. In her previous outing, Sanchis had beaten The Netherlands’ Manon Melief 3-0. National champion Pillai is still to play her last league match but has qualified with five wins from as many outings to top her Group. Neena Praveen failed to make the cut even after defeating Jana Mitova of Bulgaria 3-0 for her fourth win in six matches. Neena finished third in her group. Varshaa also came up triumphant in her league match against Ukraine’s Maria Buckaraska, beating her 3-0. In the masters section (above 40), S A Saleem bowed out of the competition after losing 2-3 to Ian Sergeant from Wales. Nigel Lazar, too, lost to Murat Ayas 1-3. J

OHANNESBURG: Gaining in confidence with every series, India’s in-form young batsmen are set to be put through their sternest test this season when the team takes on the mighty South Africa in a three-match ODI series starting here tomorrow. It is an ODI contest with context but that has got nothing to do with the political intrigue that led to this tour being shortened. Nor is it just another three-match series between the number one and number five ranked sides. This affair has a certain context, all of it pertaining to what happens within the boundary ropes. For Team India, it will be an exercise to reaffirm faith in their young batsmen. This is the same bunch that has been busy lighting up cricket grounds with some breathtaking stroke-play. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, each have scored more than thousand runs in ODIs played this calendar year, each of them averaging over fifty. There can be two ways to look at this statistic. First, they have scored runs in India, England, West Indies and Zimbabwe, in different conditions. Their confidence is sky-high at the moment and in their respective purple patches, all they can think of is playing the next match and batting on. Their great run has meant that

the Indian batting has started to look top-heavy, and this is the second point, albeit a bit worrisome. In 31 matches this year, Suresh Raina averages only 36. In 21 matches, Yuvraj Singh has scored at only 21.23. In the last nine matches (seven completed innings each) against Australia and West Indies, they have fared worse — Raina has scored at 22.42 and Yuvraj at 19.66, facing the same bowling as Dhawan, Sharma and Kohli, on the same pitches. Along with the inform top-order and below Yuvraj and Raina, is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who too has maintained his touch this year. In 23 matches, he averages 66.90. Of course, the small print is that he has been not out eight times. But his conversion rate after getting a start has been good, with four fifties and a hundred. It highlights that hole of poor form in the middle of the batting order, which South Africa will look to exploit. Particularly, when Team India is likely to play only six frontline batsmen. This will be a test unlike any other in the 11 months gone by, on pitches which will afford more bounce and are likely to cater to the hosts’ traditional strength — pace. The hosts will be eager to unleash Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and Jacques Kallis at the first available opportunity. Both Steyn and Kallis have been included in the squad for this three-

match series, after sitting out the third (and last) ODI against Pakistan. South Africa lost that threematch rubber, a first loss against Pakistan at home. Similarly, India too have never won a bilateral ODI series in South Africa and the Men in Blue will want to take heart from their archrivals’ success. For the Proteas, going up against the top-ranked ODI side, this is a chance to ascertain their own plans in this format after some patchy display in the past year. In fact, South Africa have only beaten Pakistan in two bilateral series (out of three against this opposition) in 2013, failing to impress in the Champions Trophy and losing to New Zealand and Sri Lanka elsewhere. After Gary Kirsten stepped down as coach, and AB de Villiers’ none too impressive captaincy run so far, the team is still trying to find its feet under current coach Russell Domingo. His biggest aim will be to find a cure for this team’s pain-point — failure to handle pressure and close out games. It is a fact that they have just one win in their last eight games while chasing. While Indian batsmen versus South African bowlers will prove to be the key contest, the Indian bowlers too have a chance to get onto the stage. For them, it is a chance to regain confidence lost in the last couple months.

Getting used to pace and bounce is a big challenge: Dhoni J

OHANNESBURG: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said that “getting used to the pace and bounce” in South African conditions will be the biggest challenge for his young team, which is here to play three ODIs and two Tests. “One of the big challenges is to get used to the pace and bounce. If you are just new to the international circuit, then it becomes more of a challenge. The reason being, in India even on the best of wickets you don’t get the same pace, or even bowlers who can generate similar pace and bounce. “So it makes slightly more difficult for the players who have just made their debut in the international arena,” Dhoni told reporters at the pre-match press conference. He, though, also believed that there are some players who have had international experience.

“But at the same time there are few players (in the side) who have been playing for the last few seasons and have had a decent outing all over the world. When you come to the same venue, you know how the situation or condition will be, and it gives an edge to adapt quickly. At the end of the day experience always counts.” Young they may be, but this Indian lot is also very enthusiastic about their cricket. And now, they will be raring to take on the challenge of facing against some of the best fast bowlers in world cricket. The battle then essentially will be between Indian batsmen and South Africa bowlers, and how they cope up with the likes of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander will be intriguing to say the least.

Taylor double ton puts Playing under pressure at home Kiwis in firm control is unusual for us: De Villiers D UNEDIN (New Zealand): Ross Taylor smashed a maiden double century against the West Indies today as New Zealand racked up an imposing 609-9 declared, taking a vice-like grip on the first Test in Dunedin. The tourists made a shaky start to their reply, reduced to 24-2 before recovering to reach 67 without further loss by the close but they face a monumental task to avoid defeat. Taylor, who a year ago was in the doldrums when dumped as New Zealand captain, proved that disappointment was well behind him as became only the 13th New Zealander to reach 200 in a Test innings. Along the way he shared in a 195run partnership with replacement skipper Brendon McCullum which signalled a record fourth-wicket stand for New Zealand against the West Indies. Taylor was at the crease for more than eight hours, faced 319 balls and hit 23 boundaries without risking a lofted shot. Four of those boundaries came in one over from Shannon Gabriel as the workload told on the West Indies quicks after a leg muscle strain forced Darren Sammy out of the attack.

J

OHANNESBURG: South Africa’s ODI captain AB de Villiers didn’t make any bones about the fact that the hosts are indeed “under pressure” going into the first of the three-match ODI series against a formidable Indian side led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “We are under pressure, playing in our own country and that is a bit unusual for us,” De Villiers said during the pre-match media conference. While admitting that losing the ODI series against Pakistan 1-2 has dented their confidence, the South African skipper made it a point to state that they are certainly not underdogs as being dubbed in some quarters. “We have just lost a series at home, so the confidence is not very high. Some of the knowledgeable people will say that we are underdogs. But there is no way we will stand back and allow that to happen. There is no chance we will accept that. At home we cannot afford to be called the underdogs,” De Villiers tried putting up a brave front. The skipper expects his team to perform to their full potential at

home against a team that’s not known to do well in these conditions where there is a lot of pace and bounce on offer. “If we play to our full potential, no one can stop us here, especially in South African conditions. That’s the kind of mindset I want the guys to go in with for tomorrow’s game. We need to show the right attitude, good body language. “Most of all, we need to remember that we are playing against a sub-continent team that has come to South Africa and they have a very bad record against us here. Even though we just lost a series,

we have the confidence and belief to beat the world number one side,” he added. It is definitely a sound warning for MS Dhoni and his boys, as they prepare to take on South Africa in the first ODI at the Wanderers. Given this aggressive tone, the pitch rolled will obviously be of much interest, not just in this match but throughout the tour. “I have had a look at the wicket and there’s a lot of grass on it. It hasn’t seen a lot of sun yet. But it should play the same over the course of 100 overs. Whether we bat first or second, or bowl first or second, I am not too fussed about that. We are playing the number one team in the world and we will have to play well to beat them,” said the South Africa captain. Even if the pitch doesn’t change its nature for the duration of the match, given the form of Indian batsmen, it is not unlikely that scores might touch 300. However improbable chases as seen against Australia might be elusive. Perhaps this is something that concerns South Africa more than India, for they haven’t crossed 300 for sixteen ODIs now.
