esterday was no cabinet day, yet the Chief Minister's Office on the first floor of Mantralaya witnessed an unusual mad scramble from ordinary Mumbaikars making a beeline to the registry applying for 400 sq. ft. flats at an unbelievable price of Rs.54,000 under what was being labelled as the Powai Area Development Scheme. What was a trickle on Monday, turned into a deluge of sorts as the news spread like wildfire with people making photocopies of the forms and submitting them at the Chief Minister's Office. By the end of Tuesday, the Chief Minister's Office was finally forced to issue a clarification terming the scheme as a “fraud” and urging people not to trust it. The CM's Office has now ordered a police probe into the matter.

ountry music duo, The Bellamy Brothers, Howard and David, are the first ever country band to make it to Indian shores, and also first ever to tour on the sub-continent. Best known for their 1970s and 1980s country hits like Old Hippie, I Need More Of You and If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me,) the duo are happy to be in familiar surroundings. “Back home in Florida we have a similar weather to what you have in India. Our summers are almost the same. But what we like most is the Indian food. We are foodies and love eating Indian food,” says Howard, while David chips in saying that chicken tikka masala is his favorite. Seated in a city hotel lobby he adds “We have grown up eating Indian food and I can’t remember how long we have been doing it. It’s been a long time. It’s spicy but we love it.” Their connection with Indian music began when they were young. “As teenagers we have tuned into Ravi Shankar and have seen many Bollywood movies too and so yeah, we have a great Indian connection. Bollywood movies are very different from Hollywood movies, in that Bollywood uses different formulas. It’s also nice to watch movies from different countries. In fact there’s a Bollywood award ceremony happening in about 30 miles from our town and yeah I hope to be there,” says David.

Shiv Sena's attack on the press conference of Pakistani sufi music group at the Press Club invites all round condemnation By Robin Shukla

he dastardly attack by Shiv Sena goons who entered the premises of the Press Club, Mumbai, when the Pakistani sufi rock band - the Mekaal Hasan Band - was holding its press conference yesterday afternoon attracted universal condemnation from across the country. As the press conference was being held to announce the formation of a joint first-ever Indo-Pakistan band with artists from both the countries, Shiv sainiks barged into the Press Club Hall and vandalized posters, banners of the band members and threw furniture around, in a misdirected protest against the joint cultural initiative of the music artistes. In its statement, the Press Club, Mumbai, pointed out that this was the first initiative of its kind and aimed at creating a positive interaction between the musicians of both India and Pakistan, and that instead of welcoming the initiative and thereby strengthening peaceful ties, the Shiv Sena had tried to intimidate

The employees' federation and the coordination committee of the government employees' association announced this decision after their talks with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan failed to fulfill their demands. Speaking to reporters, G.D. Kulthe, chief advisor of Maharashtra State Gazetted Officer Federation said, “We had discussions with Chief Minister Chavan and his Deputy Ajit Pawar over the issue for over two hours. Not a single demand of ours has been accepted. So we have no option but to proceed on strike”. “We have been demanding a five-day week for quite sometime. Along with that we have been stressing on various facilities which are present for the central government employees. We also want the retirement age of

state government employees to be increased from the current 58 to 60. The federation first made these demands three to four years ago but till today, no decision has been taken on this. By our estimate, the state government will have to bear an additional burden of just Rs.8 to 10 core per month if our demands are to be implemented”, he added. “The employees are ready to work for an additional 40 minutes every day in order to compensate for the loss of working hours with a fiveday week. Other demands of education allowance, transport allowance and child care leave for women should also be met”, he pointed out. Meanwhile, Chavan has clarified that the government is sympathetically considering the demands of its employees. He also appealed them against proceeding on strike. During the meeting with the employees, both Chavan and Pawar patiently heard the leaders of the employees. However, the meeting ended without any concrete conclusion.

them are: Construction of roads and bridges including new concrete roads (Rs.5,441 cr); Coastal roads (Rs.5,600 cr), trenches-free laying of duct lines (Rs.9,000 cr); improving storm water drain network based on modified BRIMSTOWARD (Rs.3,927 cr); constructing storm water drains pumping stations in the next 10 years (Rs.3,927 cr), improving solid waste management (Rs.1,617 cr); improving health sector facilities (Rs.2,340 cr) for the betterment of the education sector (Rs.2,126 cr) for the next 10 years, so as to reduce the response time to attend emergency calls

and expand fire services (Rs.2,514 cr), improving water supply system and creating new resources by building dams and becoming part of the national river link project (Rs.27,914 cr); and upgrading sewerage disposal system (Rs.11,134 cr) wherein the total plan of water and sewerage is to the tune of Rs.39,048 cr. Anuradha, who was known to the shop-owner, Lokesh Anraj Joshi, under the pretext of bringing prosperity offered to perform a ritual at his shop. Following Joshi’s assertion, the woman arrived at about 11 am and after carrying out some rituals, offered sweetmeats and

After committing the crime the couple had immediately fled to Jalna in a luxury bus”, said Deputy SP (Mira Bhayandar) Prashant Joshi.

He demanded that the existing mono from Chembur should be connected to Thane and further it should go till Badlapur and the Versova Ghatkopar metro should be extended till Kasarvadavli via Thane and from Kasarvadavali, a monorail should be run via Bhiwandi till Kalyan.

According to Sarnaik, earlier a project of Rs.7,353 crore was declared by the state government during a recent budget session by the CM during a call of attention motion in the assembly. The CM had also informed that the proposal will be sent to the central government for approval. The cops were put on a hot chase: Five teams were made and they went in hot chase of the precious buffaloes. According to some reports, the cops came right up to Delhi. It is not known how long the cops will remain suspended. What punishment is to be given to the cops will not be decided by any court: Azam Khan will decide that. A buffalo today is like a goldmine: It yields several litres of milk. A buffalo may cost as much as Rs.20,000. No wonder Azam Khan took quick steps to recover his precious buffaloes. Mulayam let fly at a rally in UP the next day. I will win all 80 seats in UP, he thundered. She can at most win 40. How can someone with just 40 MPs become PM, he demanded. The crowd roared its disapproval and gave Mulayam a thumbs-up when he asked whether or not he was capable of scooping up all 80 seats in UP. Bardhan had clearly shot his mouth off and revealed something that was meant to be a secret understanding between Jaya and the Left. If the Left has dumped Mulayam for Jaya as its PM choice, it’s because the AIADMK is the Third Front’s best bet. Mulayam’s fortunes are plunging after the Muzaffarnagar riots with his Muslim vote base thoroughly disillusioned and looking for other options. Jaya, on the other hand, is flying high. Her main rival, the DMK, is too immersed in family squabbles to pose any serious challenge to her. And the smaller parties like the MDMK and PMK have not recouped from their spectacular defeats in the last assembly elections. Jaya is empress of all she surveys and with the Left on her side, she looks good for a sweeping victory in Tamil Nadu. It’s interesting how Jaya responded to Mulayam’s diatribe against her. The PM choice will be decided after the elections, when the numbers are in, she announced after a meeting with CPM leader Prakash Karat. ADVANTAGE TRANSPORT: The monorail is a feather in the cap of Mumbai; it will ease traffic congestion and also be a big relief for the daily commuting populace. AS a Mumbaikar I am proud of my city which is the first in India to get a monorail. While putting in place a state-of-art system for urban transport is a cause of legitimate pride, question remains on the usefulness of what is essentially a suburban feeder system, not a full-fledged mass rapid transit. The monorail will carry 1.25 lakh people every day when fully operational in a sprawling metropolis of over 12 million people. India's population numbers always seems self-defeating as though some point out, connectivity in India's big cities is so

poor that any extra public transport is welcome. With cost of Rs.85 crore per km, the monorail projects are economical compared to metros, which however can carry a lot more people without affecting safety too much despite the inevitable overcrowding. fter throwing open the Chembur-Wadala corridor of the monorail to the public, the much anticipated Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd's (MMOPL) Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor is inching towards eventual commissioning soon. The Reliance Infrastructure promoted MMOPL has now commenced a two week final testing of the trains between Versova to Ghatkopar. Rinfra sources however are tigh-lipped about the actual date of commissioning and the fare structure. In a statement issued here yesterday, Rinfra disclosed that a 10-member team from the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow are currently conducting trials runs to assess the trains performance, oscillation and Emergency Braking Distance (EBD). Following these tests the RDSO will submit its report to the Commissioner for Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for final safety verification. The CMRS after detailed tests and trials will authorise MMOPL to commence passenger operations on the stretch. In an official statement Rinfra adds “RDSO is an important statutory body for certifying metro safety. We have internally tested entire metro system satisfactorily for some time now; we are confident that RDSO will be satisfied with the system performance and certify the requisites”. The 11.07 Km long VAG MMOPL corridor has been constructed at a estimated cost of Rs.4,321 crore and has 12 metro stations. The 12 stations on the route in chronological order are: Versova, DN Nagar, Azad Nagar, Andheri, Western Express Highway (WEH), Chakala, Airport Road, Marol Naka, Saki Naka, Asalfa, Jagruit Nagar and Ghatkopar. A total of 16 trains are expected to ply on the route with each train comprising of 6 coaches which can be extended in future. Each coach has a carrying capacity of 375 passengers.

aint-Gobain Glass’s Transparence 2013, the annual design competition held for students of Architecture and Design, conducted its Grand Finale at Hyderabad on January 29 during the annual 56th NASA (National Association of Students of Architecture) 2014 convention. Transparence, a competition for students of architecture and Interior design is a unique initiative by Saint-Gobain Glass to integrate the student community, architects and the industry. The event is supported by Gita Balakrishnan-run ‘Ethos’. The competition originally being held for Indian students since 2005 was made open for the SAARC nations to participate since 2013. Held at the NASA Convention 2014, and judged by an eminent jury comprising Ranjit Sabikhi from Ranjit Sabikhi Architects, India, Shahab Ghani Khan from Pakistan and Mustapha Khalid Palash from Bangladesh the fiercely contested competition saw Academy of Architecture, Mumbai emerge as the undisputed winners and walk away with a cash prize of INR 75,000. became an entrepreneur due to my role models from the business world, cultural and family influences and my education and training in Management and Finance. I attended Keble College, Oxford University from 1996 to 2000. I did my Masters in Engineering, Economics and Management. My professors were intellectual leaders in their respective fields with the ability to rouse curiosity in their students. The engineering content was interesting, but more focused on theory. I enjoyed the management and economics subjects more. I took up summer internships every year at leading companies in India and in the UK since the age of 16. I spent more than two years at Goldman Sachs, London which gave me a strong grounding in corporate finance. We also had a three month training period in New York. Education helped me in different ways. Knowledge, skills and competency helped me a lot, but more importantly, it shaped my world view, my life goals and my self-understanding. I also built life-long friendships and relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. You learn how to be yourself and yet find common ground to relate to almost any other person. I had a mixed friend circle. I enjoy the company of friends who have shared interests, but some of my close friends are very different people, and I like it that way. In college also, I had different groups of friends, each very special from whom I learned a lot. I tend to get along best with people who are grounded and down to earth. Apart from the partying, drinking and dating at Oxford, we enjoyed long philosophical debates and discussions, and indulged in a lot of sports. Our favorite place was our college bar, designed like a spaceship, and a pub next door called the Lamb and Flag, as well as some of the amazing libraries across the university where I preferred doing my coursework. Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with some stunning architecture. Our college was and still is the only red-brick building in the university. People either love it or dislike it, but I quite liked it. The first day at college was a little unnerving and exciting at the same time. We had a whole week of orientation. The first

place as it becomes a platform to understand best practices in a field, but nothing substitutes for learning on the job learning. Both are important and it is important to get the right balance. It is possible to have the best of both worlds. My advice for students is, make the most of your years as students. Look for opportunities to learn, experiment, and get out of your comfort zones. This is your chance to figure out what you enjoy doing and what you’re good at, and the best way to figure it out, is to try out different things. Also, constantly look for living and historical examples of excellence. Be inspired to be your best and do your best for yourself, not to show the world. And most importantly, enjoy the ride. Do not let the pressure of competing get to you. Being happy is as, if not more, important than being successful. For those who want to study abroad, remember that the system of education is different. At Oxford, the system is tutorial based, where the subject tutors have individual tutorial sessions with students, typically two students at a time. The personal time spent with tutors – who are academic leaders in their respective fields – is invaluable. It raises the expectation from the student, to be well prepared for these sessions. The school system there includes bunching students based on the capability levels for each subject. So if you are excellent at Math, you will be put in a class for more advanced Math students. If you are weak in Economics, you will be put in an appropriate set. This helps the teacher teach at a level and pace appropriate for a set of students. There is also recognition of the importance of all round development and focus on areas like interpersonal skills, leadership, personality development etc. These skills often play a more important role than technical skills and knowledge. Internships are also very important. My internships were with companies of varying sizes and in different sectors, ranging from a small glass manufacturing company, to a large multinational chemicals firm, and a homegrown telecom company. The projects I did were typically goal oriented and also gave me an exposure across functions. This range of experiences through my internships gave me a multi-functional understanding of business, and a deep respect for people across departments. I was fortunate to have had great mentors at each of these organizations, and like them, there are so many inspiring examples of people who go out of their way to few days were all about making new friends and getting to help and encourage others and be great role models for youngknow everyone. A new course which focuses on architectural visualisation techniques is being launched at Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment this year. The new course will start in September 2014. The course, which will be delivered online over three years, will give students hands-on experience of a range of software packages, providing a foundation upon which they can develop their ideas and project work. Who is a landscaper and what does garden designing involve? A landscaper is a person who can visualise the modification of the visual features of land. He or she needs to be able to arrange different elements together to create a visually appealing environment. Garden designers are skilled specialists dealing with master planning of landscapes and design of gardens, consulting with advice for clients, providing direction and supervision during construction, and the management of establishment and maintenance once the garden has been created. They are able to survey the site, and prepare drawings for the development of a garden from concepts to construction, and resource the plant and building materials. Garden design is the process of designing and creating plans for layout and planting of gardens and landscapes. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (February 04, 2014) a net 0.90 points (0.01%) and closed at the 6000 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5947 points level on weak global cues. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5933 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.03 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and then registered the day’s high at the 6017 points level at 2.31 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session moved in a range of 85 points and closed at the psychologically important 6000 points level. Sentiment turned bullish towards the end of a session and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 31 were gainers, while 19 were losers. Buying was seen in banking, FMCG, power, auto, realty and consumer durables, while selling was witnessed in IT, technology, healthcare, metal and oil & gas stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 16.33%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 717 were gainers, 722 were losers and 67 remained unchanged.

All these indicate a negative bias. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels. Incidentally, the index is near its 200 days average which is at the 5974 points level. (It tested that level intra-day yesterday). This could be a strong support level and there is a possibility that the index could reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, than it would indicate a change in the primary trend and a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Lagarde said, ruing that in the past, economists have underestimated the importance of inequality. Observing that over the next three decades, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population will get much larger and much older, she said that in 30 years time, there will be about two billion more people on the planet, including three quarters of a billion people over the age of 65. By 2020, for the first time

ever, there will be more old people over 65 than children under five, Lagarde said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The geographical distribution will also change - young populations in regions like Africa and South Asia will increase sharply, while Europe, China, and Japan will age and shrink. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the coming decades, we expect India to surpass China, and Nigeria to surpass the United States, in terms of population. And both China and India will start ageing in the near future. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This can create problems on both ends of the demographic spectrum - for youthful countries and for greying countries. Right now, the young countries are seeing a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;youth bulgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, with almost three billion people half the global population - under 25. EW DELHI: The legendary Tiger Woods kept his date with India as the world number one golfer not only tamed the difficult Delhi Golf Course with a nine-under score but also conquered hearts of the thousands of people who came to have a glimpse of him. In a lucrative 18-hole exhibition match, Woods mesmerised the spectators with his immaculate sense of the game as he hardly put a foot wrong and had most greens in regulation in the DGC, which is known for its narrow fairways. The top golfer has been reportedly paid Rs 15 crore to play a round of golf with Munjal and his guests. A visage of Woods appeared around the fairways after compere Alan Wilkins announced the golfer's arrival at the first hole. After a few practice shots and exchange of pleasentaries, Woods teed off amid a couple of thousands people who had thronged the DGC, which was supposed to be a hushed-up private event here. Dressed in a blue tee-shirt, black trousers and white cap, Tiger started off with a wonderful shot straight down the middle, which was the hallmark of the man although the day as he played along with his host Munjal exclusively for the first nine holes and returned with a card of six-under. In the next nine holes, Woods was accompanied by Rajiv Singh of DLF and Justice Vikramajit Sen of Supreme Court on the 10th and 11th holes, while leading Indian woman golfer Sharmila Nicollet played a couple of holes at the 12th and 13th,

before media honchos Prannoy Roy and Aveek Sarkar joined the golf great at the DGC. On the last three holes, it was a skins game between two teams -- Pawan Munjal-Tiger Woods vs Shiv Kapur and Anirban Lahiri, which ended on an even keel with Kapur winning the 17th hole with a birdie and Munjal and Woods pocketing the 18th hole with both hitting birdies on the last. They are legends in their own domain, but it seems iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has managed to floor ace golfer Tiger Woods when the two greats caught up in the Capital on Tuesday. After meeting Tendulkar and his family here, Woods wrote on micro-blogging site 'Twitter' that the batting genius was a "cool" guy. "Just met a cricket legend and his family. Great run by Mumbai horses – Starry Eye and Circle of Life By Timur

he run of Starry Eyes and Circle of Life was indeed great. Two trainers Cooji Katrak and Pesi Shroff have worked wonders with the horses. Pesi has been patiently improving Circle of Life and there was hope he would make. Cooji Katraik had some problems with Starry Eyes, but he did not give up but worked hard on the horse. Starry Eyes and Circle of Life placed second and third in McDowell Signature Derby. What was disappointing was the run of Murioi. It was a hot favourite. It did not reproduce its Guineas run. Maybe in the Derby, the distance was against it. It came 4th in the Derby race. M.A.M. Ramasway must have been disappointed by its run. The horse did not live up to its expectations. Half the number of races were mercifully won by

favourites. It looked in the beginning of the afternoon, all would be well and favourites would win most the race, but that did not happen. In the first, well-backed horse Hidden Asset won. Narendra Lagad trained horse Double Diamond did attract betting, but it could only place. Way Out, Cooji Katrak trained horse was available at 2 to 1. In a spirited late dash it won the race. In the Kanga Gold Trophy, the winner was Supreme Star which was trained by M. Narredu. It was available at 7 to 2 in the ring. A great run was by Deja Vu which was available at 20 to 1. It missedmaking it by just a shorthand. Supreme Star and Deja Vu forget it out stride by stride but the former won by a shorthand. Sheer Class, owned by Vijay Mallya and trained by Pesi Shroff won the Antiquity Blue

Pune's Anil Munde rose to challenge with a confident attack and defense game to record a thrilling victory against unseeded former India number two Vilas Dalvi of Thane. Anil Munde showed solid concentration and steelynerves to sideline in form opponent Vils Dalvi 25-17, 14-25, 25-9 in a thrilling three games encounter to clinch the top honours. Earlier Anil Munde of Pune booked his berth in the final by overcoming Ashok Gaur of Mumbai 25-6, 25-19 in straight games.

Manglore Blues SC to meet Star of Canara SC in the finals

MUMBAI: Manglore Blues SC will clash against Star of Canara SC in the finals of the 18th Late Ramanath Payyade Memorial League Football Trophy 2013-2014. In the first match, Manglore Blues SC emerged victorious against a fighting Satya Vijaya SC 2-0. A goal scored on either side of the half helped Manglore Blues SC to overcome their opponents. MUMBAI: BPCL, ONGC & HPCL won their league matches with consummate ease on the second day of the Indian Oil organised PSPB T-20 Cricket Tournament in Mumbai. Last editionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s runners up ONGC thrashed EIL by 9 wickets in a Group B match at the MIG CC ground. Electing to field, ONGC restricted EIL to 126 for 5 wickets. The experienced Virender Sharma top scored for EIL with a fine fifty. ONGC raced to their target in a mere 8.3 overs with the opening duo of Unmukt Chand (33 runs) and Sandeep Sharma (70 n.o.) sharing a 64 run partnership. Sharma was very severe on off spinner Virender Sharma, whom he hit for 5 consecutive sixes in an over. In the second match played at MIG, Mumbai U-19 and India U-19 World Cup probable Jai Bishta scored a breezy century (105 runs of just 48 balls) to script a facile 146 run victory for HPCL over their hapless opponents GAIL.
