FLATS FOR `54,000

DESPATCH & COURIER SHIV SENA ALIENATES MEDIA IT has never happened in the city's history that any group or union or political party has ever attacked, what is regarded as the sacred hub of Mumbai's journalists, The Mumbai Press Club. But yesterday, the Shiv Sena did it. They attacked the club simply because a Pakistani Sufi band was holding a press conference there. Not even in the fiery days of the eighties when ransacking unions ruled over the city did such a thing occur, no matter how much they were criticised. Neither did it happen when Sena supremo Bal Thackeray lorded over the city, no matter what the provocation.

AFTER 15,000 FORMS ARE RECEIVED, CM'S OFFICE RUSHES TO ISSUE OFFICIAL STATEMENT DECLARING THAT SCHEME OFFERING CHEAP FLATS AT POWAI IS BOGUS By Prashant Hamine

Y

esterday was no cabinet day, yet the Chief Minister's Office on the first floor of Mantralaya witnessed an unusual mad scramble from ordinary Mumbaikars making a beeline to the registry applying for 400 sq. ft. flats at an unbelievable price of Rs.54,000 under what was being labelled as the Powai Area Development Scheme. What was a trickle on Monday, turned into a deluge of sorts as the news spread like wildfire with people making photocopies of the forms and submitting them at the Chief Minister's Office. By the end of Tuesday, the Chief Minister's Office was finally forced to issue a clarification terming the scheme as a “fraud” and urging people not to trust it. The CM's Office has now ordered a police probe into the matter.

Accepted in the name of the CM And just when we thought that the Sena had matured and learned that these ransacking violent ways would - except for getting them a few local corporations; get them nowhere within the higher echelons of state or national politics, they proved us wrong. And this is a mistake they will surely regret as they find themselves alienated from the media, that too just before the coming general elections. It’s like shooting oneself in the feet. Even friends of the Sena in the journalist fraternity, and there were many – we use the word 'were' instead of 'are' because most may no longer be friends as they to have felt the sting of the home blow and may no longer stand up in support of the party. That having been said, yesterday’s attack has to be condemned. The press club is open to anyone to hold conferences and express their views. Trespassing and intimidating the media is a backward step. This will not be accepted. — Editor

Earlier in the day, the mad rush of excited applicants had forced the authorities at the Mail Registry at the Chief Minister's Office to open up additional receiving windows. Sources disclosed that more than 15,000 such forms have been accepted in the last two days. When asked as to why they were accepting the forms, the reply was that the staff has been instructed to accept all mail addressed in the name of the Chief Minister. “There were two sets of forms that were in circulation in the Mantralaya yesterday – one bearing the template of being issued in public interest by some Maharashtra Lokshahi Aghadi and another form bore the template “forwarded for information – Bharip-Bahujan Mahasangh, Maharashtra Lokshahi Aghadi”, states the official statement issued by the CM's Office. The content of both the application forms was almost identical. However, both the forms mentioned that the state Continued on pg 8 «

ountry music duo, The Bellamy Brothers, Howard and David, are the first ever country band to make it to Indian shores, and also first ever to tour on the sub-continent. Best known for their 1970s and 1980s country hits like Old Hippie, I Need More Of You and If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me,) the duo are happy to be in familiar surroundings. “Back home in Florida we have a similar weather to what you have in India. Our summers are almost the same. But what we like most is the Indian food. We are foodies and love eating Indian food,” says Howard, while David chips in saying that chicken tikka masala is his favorite. Seated in a city hotel lobby he adds “We have grown up eating Indian food and I can’t remember how long we have been doing it. It’s been a long time. It’s spicy but we love it.” Their connection with Indian music began when they were young. “As teenagers we have tuned into Ravi Shankar and have seen many Bollywood movies too and so yeah, we have a great Indian connection. Bollywood movies are very different from Hollywood movies, in that Bollywood uses different formulas. It’s also nice to watch movies from different countries. In fact there’s a Bollywood award ceremony happening in about 30 miles from our town and yeah I hope to be there,” says David.

Bellamy Brothers - Howard and David. “I probably discovered Indian music through the Beatles,” says Howard, adding that they have used the sitar in their music.“My son plays a little of the sitar and actually he has a real sitar and an electric sitar. In fact, we used a little of his work on our recordings. We had done a gospel album and we used the sitar on a song Grandma’s God. The song is interesting because it’s about western religion and usual eastern instruments,” laughs David. In aid of Kripa Foundation, the Bellamy Brothers have always wanted to come to India, but just could not make it. The duo have together written

Shiv Sena's attack on the press conference of Pakistani sufi music group at the Press Club invites all round condemnation By Robin Shukla

T

he dastardly attack by Shiv Sena goons who entered the premises of the Press Club, Mumbai, when the Pakistani sufi rock band - the Mekaal Hasan Band - was holding its press conference yesterday afternoon attracted universal condemnation from across the country. As the press conference was being held to announce the formation of a joint first-ever Indo-Pakistan band with artists from both the countries, Shiv sainiks barged into the Press Club Hall and vandalized posters, banners of the band members and threw furniture around, in a misdirected protest against the joint cultural initiative of the music artistes. In its statement, the Press Club, Mumbai, pointed out that this was the first initiative of its kind and aimed at creating a positive interaction between the musicians of both India and Pakistan, and that instead of welcoming the initiative and thereby strengthening peaceful ties, the Shiv Sena had tried to intimidate

the musicians from both the countries. The statement further asserted that the Press Club upheld the right of the Mekaal Hasan Band to hold a press conference at the club premises and also the right of musicians and artists to conduct their programmes in India

State govt employees to go on strike from Feb 13 Over issues like 5-day week, retirement age, etc By Suyash Padate

S

tate government offices across the state are likely to come to a standstill from February 13 as 15 lakh state government employees will go on an indefinite strike. The employees' federation and the coordination committee of the government employees' association announced this decision after their talks with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan failed to fulfill their demands. Speaking to reporters, G.D. Kulthe, chief advisor of Maharashtra State Gazetted Officer Federation said, “We had discussions with Chief Minister Chavan and his Deputy Ajit Pawar over the issue for over two hours. Not a single demand of ours has been accepted. So we have no option but to proceed on strike”. “We have been demanding a five-day week for quite sometime. Along with that we have been stressing on various facilities which are present for the central government employees. We also want the retirement age of

state government employees to be increased from the current 58 to 60. The federation first made these demands three to four years ago but till today, no decision has been taken on this. By our estimate, the state government will have to bear an additional burden of just Rs.8 to 10 core per month if our demands are to be implemented”, he added. “The employees are ready to work for an additional 40 minutes every day in order to compensate for the loss of working hours with a fiveday week. Other demands of education allowance, transport allowance and child care leave for women should also be met”, he pointed out. Meanwhile, Chavan has clarified that the government is sympathetically considering the demands of its employees. He also appealed them against proceeding on strike. During the meeting with the employees, both Chavan and Pawar patiently heard the leaders of the employees. However, the meeting ended without any concrete conclusion.

peacefully. Gurbir Singh, senior journalist and president of The Press Club, Mumbai, said, “We call upon the police to take severe action against those who were arrested for trespassing into the club.” Expressing solidarity, The Press Club, Kolkata, in its state-

ment indicated that any such act committed by an individual, a group or a political party undermines and frustrates the efforts of both the countries to forge links with each other and to build up a strong and lasting relationship. This is not only detrimental to the peace-loving

citizens of both the countries but also reflects poorly on the culture that is being espoused by some to spread hatred. 'Press Club Kolkata severely condemns the incident and calls for a stop to such unwanted militant behavior. The incident is also disturbing since it took place inside the prestigious Mumbai Press Club, home to hundreds of journalists, thus showing that the attackers had scant regard for the media too. Press Club, Kolkata demands that the culprits are brought to book at the earliest.' From Delhi, The Press Club of India, in its statement said it strongly condemned the violence unleashed by Shiv Sena activists. 'What has happened is not only an attack on the freedom of expression, but also on the freedom of the Press. Their action has damaged the fair name of India as a country where democratic freedoms are exercised without fear or intimidation from the state or other agencies. Strong action should be taken against the Shiv Sena activists.'

An 18 per cent rise likely in BMC budget By Khushboo Panjabi

B

MC’s annual budget for FY 20142015 will be presented today in the standing committee meeting, without standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale chairing it. The budget is likely to see an approximate rise of around 18 per cent. Last year the BMC had a Rs. 27,578 crore budget and may thus be around Rs.32,565 crore this year. This fiscal, the civic body has planned to take up various minor and major projects and expects to complete them in the next five to ten years. Some of

them are: Construction of roads and bridges including new concrete roads (Rs.5,441 cr); Coastal roads (Rs.5,600 cr), trenches-free laying of duct lines (Rs.9,000 cr); improving storm water drain network based on modified BRIMSTOWARD (Rs.3,927 cr); constructing storm water drains pumping stations in the next 10 years (Rs.3,927 cr), improving solid waste management (Rs.1,617 cr); improving health sector facilities (Rs.2,340 cr) for the betterment of the education sector (Rs.2,126 cr) for the next 10 years, so as to reduce the response time to attend emergency calls

and expand fire services (Rs.2,514 cr), improving water supply system and creating new resources by building dams and becoming part of the national river link project (Rs.27,914 cr); and upgrading sewerage disposal system (Rs.11,134 cr) wherein the total plan of water and sewerage is to the tune of Rs.39,048 cr. All these projects were presented by the Mayor last week in the 14th Finance Commission meet as he had said, “The total capital requirement for MCGM is to the tune of Rs.71,613 crore for the next 10 years”. khushboo.panajbi@afternoondc.in

Chandresh Hill building, Ravi Solanki (40) alias Papa alias Danny was infamous for his notoriety in the region. His body with head slashed was found dumped near the local rickshaw stand early on Tuesday morning. Besides attempt to murder, theft, dacoity and other serious offences registered against him at local police stations in Thane and Mumbai, Papa was openly involved in extortion activities in the region. A case under section 302 of the IPC has been registered against unidentified assailants. The Nallasopara Police is investigating the case.

ess than 48 hours after a jeweller from Bhayandar was robbed of his gold ornaments worth lakhs, the Navghar police have arrested a couple from Jalna on Tuesday morning. The accused couple identified as Anuradha Kalwani (25) alias Anu Batra and Satyaprakash Changamal Kalwani (24) are residents of Golden Eagle Towers in Bhayandar. According to the police, the crime was reported from the recently inaugurated Mangal-Murti Jewellers located in the Golden Nest area of Bhayandar (E) on Sunday. Anuradha, who was known to the shop-owner, Lokesh Anraj Joshi, under the pretext of bringing prosperity offered to perform a ritual at his shop. Following Joshi’s assertion, the woman arrived at about 11 am and after carrying out some rituals, offered sweetmeats and

a liquid substance laced with sedatives claiming it to be ‘Holy Prasad’. After consuming the ‘prasad’, Joshi and his employee Vikram Singh, fell unconscious, following which the conwoman and her husband Satyaprakash escaped with all the gold ornaments and data storage set of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop. A police team comprising police personnel Vithal Patil, Sanjay Shinde and Jyotish Kothari immediately swung into action and with the help of their informer network and technical surveillance managed to nab the couple from Jalna. “While the woman claims to be working as a commission agent with a Nallasopara-based builder, her husband is a call-center employee. After committing the crime the couple had immediately fled to Jalna in a luxury bus”, said Deputy SP (Mira Bhayandar) Prashant Joshi.

Even as the shop owner ascertained Rs.2.37 lakh as the value of the stolen booty, the police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs.15 lakh from the possession of the accused. “The couple had apparently set a honey trap to lure their target as it is now clear that Anuradha was constantly in touch with the shop owner on a social messaging service”, revealed Senior Police Inspector Dinkar Pingle. A case under sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison etc.) and 380 (Theft) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered, but the police are contemplating to invoke sections of the Anti-Black Magic and Superstition Ordinance Act, 2013 in this context. The accused will be produced before the District Sessions Court, Thane on Wednesday. Further investigations are being carried out by Assistant Police Inspector Raju Mane.

government, in 1986 had, with noble intentions of providing cheap affordable housing to poor people, announced the Powai Area Development Scheme. Under this scheme, the government had allocated 230 acre plot of land at a nominal rate of 40 paise per acre to Hiranandani Builders. Under the supposed scheme, flats admeasuring 400 sq. ft. and valued at Rs.54,000 were to be built. The application then carried an undertaking by the applicant that he was a poor citizen and had no place to live in Mumbai and that he was agreeing to the scheme and was willing to pay Rs.54,000 for the same. That was not all, the punchline read, “Hence I request that I be allotted a flat under the scheme and I hope that I shall be able to experience the saying 'Congress Ka Hath, Aam Aadmi Ke Sath'” While the second applica-

tion form bearing the stamp of Bharip-Bahujan Mahasangh dated February 5, 2014 states that the scheme was announced in 1987, it states that 3,000 flats were supposed to have been allocated to the economically weaker sections of the society. All that the applicant has to do in the single page form, addressed in the name of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, is to fill up his name, contact number, address, total number of family members, total number of earning members of the family and approximate annual income of the family. The other application form circulated in the name of Maharashtra Lokshahi Aghadi requires one to just pen his or her signature, name, date and address, and that is all. The clarification by the CM's office, which came later, said that no such scheme was in vogue. It further states that the form is totally bogus.

A woman who manhandles? Continued from pg 1 « abusive language and humiliates the staff. This is not the first time that we are being subjected to bad behavior from her,” said a staff member from the Cooper Hospital. The already disgruntled staff felt that it had had enough on Monday when Dr. Malik manhandled nurse Desai for no reason at all. “Dr. Malik had come for her rounds to the hospital when she asked us about a few rooms that were locked. Preeti replied that she did not know about any locked rooms. To this, Dr. Malik took Preeti by her arm and pulled her roughly saying that she will now be shown which rooms are locked and this irked us. We decided that on Tuesday none of the nurses will work until Dr. Malik apologises for her behaviour,” said a nurse who has been working at Cooper Hospital. Desai confirmed this incident and said, “Dr. Malik asked me about some locked rooms and when I asked her which rooms she was talking about, she took me by my arms and forcefully pulled me. She could have spoken to me in an appropriate manner and made me understand the issue. But she never does that. She always keeps scolding the staff. We always follow her instructions and never object to whatever she says but she should also speak in the right manner”. Work was at a standstill at the hospital for almost six hours till Dr. Malik came to Cooper Hospital and apologised to the nurses.Despite making repeated attempts, Dr. Malik did not receive our calls and remained unavailable for comment.

He is a student and a son of a businessman. A resident of Carter Road, Bandra, Duberia had

left home at 11:30 pm and was driving towards Juhu, officials informed. The accused informed, “While I was driving from my house towards Juhu, there was another auto coming from Sarasvati Lane. To give the auto driver way, I switched on the dipper of my car so that the auto driver could see the car was going in which direction”. The auto took a sharp right and escaped the spot. In order to save his car and not collide with the stationary auto, he took a right turn but failed to control the car and dashed Verma. An eye-witness of the incident, a nearby cobbler, said, “Verma was a good man and completely innocent”.

The accused called his friend from the spot and informed him about the incident. He asked his friend to help him take Verma to the hospital. They took him to the nearby Bhabha Hospital but Verma was declared dead by the doctors in the hospital. Duberia went to the Santacuz Police Station and informed the police about the incident and was held in police custody. Senior Police Inspector from Santacruz Police station Arun Chauhan said, “We have arrested the boy under section 279 and 304 (A) of IPC. The boy was not drunk while he was driving and all his papers are also in place including licence. He was produced before the court and sent to judicial custody”.

Thane MLAs will occupy Mumbai’s monorail coaches in protest if there is no plan initiated for such services in their own city By Kaptan Mali

A

fter Mumbai received its first long awaited Mono Rail on February 1, the local MLAs in Thane have threatened to stage a protest in Mumbai’s monorail Mono Rail soon if their demand to provide metro and monorail service to Thane is not fulfilled. The MLAs are alleging that there is a plan of metro and mono in other cities like Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, Pimpri Chinchwad etc. then why is Thane being given a step-motherly treatment? The MLAs are waiting for the upcoming state assembly session and if their demands are not met in the session they will protest in the monorail. Recently, in a meeting held at Airoli grounds, the deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar spoke about the possibilities of metro and monorail in Thane and surrounding areas, however Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was mum on the issue. Pratap Sarnaik, Shiv Sena MLA from Thane has written a letter to the state chief minister and MMRDA chief U.P.S. Madan demanding announcement of metro and monorail in Thane. He demanded that the existing mono from Chembur should be connected to Thane and further it should go till Badlapur and the Versova Ghatkopar metro should be extended till Kasarvadavli via Thane and from Kasarvadavali, a monorail should be run via Bhiwandi till Kalyan.

According to Sarnaik, earlier a project of Rs.7,353 crore was declared by the state government during a recent budget session by the CM during a call of attention motion in the assembly. The CM had also informed that the proposal will be sent to the central government for approval. He had also informed the house that 50 per cent of the funds will be arranged from the financial institutions and 20, 20 and 10 per cent will be funded by the central, state government and civic bodies respectively but nothing has been done yet in this regard. “If the government doesn’t announce mono and metro projects in Thane in the upcoming assembly session, we will sit in the monorail in Mumbai and protest. I am also getting other MLAs’ support for this protest,” Sarnaik added.

Security in UP for buffaloes too L

aw and order in Uttar Pradesh is meant not only for men and women but also for buffaloes. When Azam Khan, SP minister, came to know that some of his buffaloes were missing, he became very angry and immediately suspended three policemen for dereliction of duty. No enquiry was held before punishing the cops. The cops were suspended straightaway. The thieves have not yet been identified, but some of the buffaloes have been found. The cops were put on a hot chase: Five teams were made and they went in hot chase of the precious buffaloes. According to some reports, the cops came right up to Delhi. It is not known how long the cops will remain suspended. What punishment is to be given to the cops will not be decided by any court: Azam Khan will decide that. A buffalo today is like a goldmine: It yields several litres of milk. A buffalo may cost as much as Rs.20,000. No wonder Azam Khan took quick steps to recover his precious buffaloes. In Uttar Pradesh suspension takes place at the slightest provocation. For instance, IAS officer Durga Shakti was suspended for allegedly trying to trigger communal riots. The IAS officer had only tried to intervene in the illegal and corrupt activities of the sand mafia. The government did not bother to hold an inquiry but went ahead fast and suspended her. In Uttar Pradesh, the SP government claims it takes extra measures to provide security to all people. It claims cops who were remiss and had failed to protect women are being punished. No leniency is shown, the government claims, to those cops who are corrupt, and who fail to protect innocent citizens. By punishing cops who have failed to protect his buffaloes, Azam Khan has shown that law and order in the state will be maintained at any cost.

E

gos are bristling already in the newlyformed 11-party Third Front with Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh heaping scorn on AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa for nursing ambitions to be the next prime minister. That privilege was reserved for him, he had thought. Hadn’t he already sounded out the Left to support his candidature for PM of a Third Front government? It seemed like a betrayal when he saw CPI leader A.B. Bardhan cosying up to Jaya for an electoral pact in Tamil Nadu. And then to make matters worse, after the CPI and AIADMK sealed their deal, Bardhan declared that the TN chief minister would be eminently suitable to lead the next government if the Third Front had the numbers. Mulayam let fly at a rally in UP the next day. I will win all 80 seats in UP, he thundered. She can at most win 40. How can someone with just 40 MPs become PM, he demanded. The crowd roared its disapproval and gave Mulayam a thumbs-up when he asked whether or not he was capable of scooping up all 80 seats in UP. Bardhan had clearly shot his mouth off and revealed something that was meant to be a secret understanding between Jaya and the Left. If the Left has dumped Mulayam for Jaya as its PM choice, it’s because the AIADMK is the Third Front’s best bet. Mulayam’s fortunes are plunging after the Muzaffarnagar riots with his Muslim vote base thoroughly disillusioned and looking for other options. Jaya, on the other hand, is flying high. Her main rival, the DMK, is too immersed in family squabbles to pose any serious challenge to her. And the smaller parties like the MDMK and PMK have not recouped from their spectacular defeats in the last assembly elections. Jaya is empress of all she surveys and with the Left on her side, she looks good for a sweeping victory in Tamil Nadu. It’s interesting how Jaya responded to Mulayam’s diatribe against her. The PM choice will be decided after the elections, when the numbers are in, she announced after a meeting with CPM leader Prakash Karat. She stressed that the issue was not on the table at the moment. The magnanimous offering of

T

he Hussain painting that provided the backdrop for Rahul Gandhi’s recent television interview has become a bone of contention in Congress circles. The traditionalists are up in arms against Rahul’s ``apolitical’’ aides for not having the foresight to remove the expensive painting from the frame. Their beef is that it looked incongruous. A Hussain worth crores of rupees doesn’t sit well with rants against the ``system’’ and pleas for empowerment of women, Dalits and tribals, they’ve been grumbling. The interview was shot at Jawahar Bhavan, which houses the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation

ow that Rahul Gandhi has opened up to the media with a full length interview to Times Now, pressure is mounting on Narendra Modi to follow suit. Leading news anchors have been calling up senior BJP leaders considered close to him asking when Modi will condescend to give an interview. Like Rahul, Modi too keeps a strict distance from the media and has not given an interview to an Indian newspaper or television channel. He has only spoken to the foreign press. At least Rahul is meeting Indian journalists. So far, Modi is resisting the pressure. A BJP leader who knows him well said that Modi doesn’t believe in ``me too’’ politics.

section of the Congress is upset with Rahul for not walking the talk and choosing a woman when it came to picking the new chief minister for Uttarakhand in place of Vijay Bahuguna. The party opted for Harish Rawat instead of Indira Hirdesh, currently finance minister in the state government. The decision seems to fly in the face of Rahul’s oftrepeated theme of women’s empowerment. He repeated it at least half a dozen times in Arati R. Jerath his TV interview. He had also announced with much fanfare at the recent AICC meeting that and is impeccably done up with tasteful fur- he wanted at least 50 per cent of chief minisnishings and of course, paintings by some of ters in India to be women. of the knowledge with which he is gifted, all the mystery of which lies in his recognition of the differences between thing and beings. This gives man superiority not only over all creatures of the earth, but it even makes him excel the angels, the hosts of heaven. The Quran explains it in the following words, ‘When thy Lord said unto the angels, “We are going to place a substitute on earth” they said, “Wilt Thou place there one who will do evil therein and shed blood, while we celebrate Thy praise and sanctify Thee?” God an-

MATTER & SPIRIT swered, “Verily We know that which ye know not;” and He taught Adam the names of all things, and then presented them to the angels, and said, “Declare unto Me the names of these things if ye say truth.” They answered, “Praise be unto Thee, we have no knowledge but what Thou teachest us, for Thou art allknowing and wise”. God said, “O! Adam, tell them their names”. And when Adam came he told their names.” Every name reveals to the seer the past, present, and the future of that which it covers. Name is not only significant of form but of character as well. The meaning of name

plays an important part in man’s life, and the sound, the vowels in the name, the rhythm, number, and nature of the letters which compose it, the mystical numbers, symbol and planet, as well as the root from which it is derived and the effect which it produces, all disclose their secret to the seer. Letters singly or together are either pronounced smoothly or with difficulty and have their effect accordingly upon oneself and upon another. Names that are smooth and soft-sounding make a soft effect upon the speaker and listener, whereas hard sounding names have a contrary effect. Man naturally calls soft things by smooth names and hard things by hard-sounding names as for instance flower and rock, wool and flint, etc. Language, and especially name, show the class of people and character of families, communities and races. Vowels play a great part in the name and its influence. E and I denote Jemal, the feminine quality of grace, wisdom, beauty and receptivity, O and U denote Jelal, the masculine quality of power and expression. A denotes Kemal, which is significant of the perfection in which both these qualities are centered. The above-named vowels in the composition of the name have an effect according to their place in the name, whether in the beginning, centre or end. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Chidambaram is no economic pundit I refer to Shri. Virendra Kapoor's article 'Will keeping budgetary promise shatter the economy?' (ADC, Feb 3). The author has very deftly brought out the stark facts about the unimaginative handling of the economy by Chidambaram, the FM who loses no opportunity to boast that he is an 'economic pundit', has presided over the ruin of the National economy but brazenly criticised Modi, who is not an expert, but has been voted thrice successively by virtue of his sound management of Gujarat's economy. Kapoor has also brought out that the FM may not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election as he HARD KNOCKS: The FM is solely sees no provision for himself to responsible for the economic disasters – contest and win while his election unprecedented inflation, GDP at 4.8 per in 2009 is still not confirmed by the cent, huge CAD at US$ 88.2 billion court of law. Delhiites disappointed THIS refers to your edit piece 'Can AAP survive?' (ADC, Feb 4). A more pertinent question would be 'Does AAP deserve to survive?'. Going by the party's recent failings on many fronts, it is abundantly clear that this 'Delhi Club of activists' is not in the least interested in governing Delhi but is enamoured of entering the Lok Sabha as is evident from its hectic preparations for putting up some 400 candidates in the ensuing national polls. The Delhiites who have helped the debutant party to win 28 seats, are already disillusioned and disappointed particularly on its confrontation with the power supply companies. When there are such burning issues for the 'aam aadmi', the party celebrates its passing the Jan Lokpal Bill in the cabinet quite unnecessarily, going against the Centre's Lokpal Bill which has already become an Act. The AAP just does not have it in it the will or wherewithal to govern and will do well to sit in the opposition to learn how to run a government.

FM has not objected to raising the cap from nine gas cylinders to 12 notwithstanding an additional burden of Rs.5,000 crore for the reason it was announced by Rahul Gandhi. The economic disaster on each front viz., unprecedented inflation, GDP at 4.8 per cent, huge CAD at US$ 88.2 billion and a series of deficits disproves the claims of the FM who has no rights to criticise Modi who has proved his ability in Gujarat by efficient handling in all the spheres – Men, Money and Materials (3Ms). PM even admitted that his government could not control inflation during the interaction with the media on January 3 which points out towards the FM. revisit its 1995 Hindutva verdict delivered in an election case. However, it is not clear whether this is in response to a petition brought before it, or the Apex Court has decided to take a suo motto notice. The judgment in this matter will have far reaching ramifications in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April/May 2014.

FORTY times champions Mumbai lost both to Karnataka and Maharashtra in this year's Ranji Trophy and they were locked in the final at Hyderabad. The pitch as usual ridden with cracks and foot marks, wasn't a pretty sight, but it had barely caused batsmen any sort of alarm for four days and a session. Had anything changed now? From day one, Karnataka had inched steadily towards victory. At times their tactics hadn't reflected their dominance. At times they looked like they had come close to giving their opponents a glimmer of hope. Karnataka's eleven had eight players who had experienced the heartbreak of the 2009-10 final. It also had Rahul, Nair and Shreyas Gopal, who had all established themselves in the last two seasons. This was their moment. Ex players from Karnataka were praising the team but the standard of the game going down and that was the reason for Karnataka annexing Ranji Trophy for the seventh time. Kudos to Karnataka side.

AS reported it is indeed very shocking, deplorable, disgraceful, irresponsible to note that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his retinue of ministers misbehave in public openly and use very unparliamentary language. It OF seems power has gone LETTER THE DAY into their heads and are absolutely ignoramus as how to rule and administer the country. They behave more like hooligans and shamelessly defy all rules, regulations and legalities of the state, even shame the Constitution of the country which is very unbecoming of the AAP who have definitely disappointed and disheartened Delhiites who voted for them and expected that they will carry on their duties diligently, honestly and with sincerity.

SENSITIVE: Apex court's decision to revisit it's 1995 Hindutva verdict will have big effect in forthcoming LS polls.

Monrail: Pride of Mumbai

ADVANTAGE TRANSPORT: The monorail is a feather in the cap of Mumbai; it will ease traffic congestion and also be a big relief for the daily commuting populace. AS a Mumbaikar I am proud of my city which is the first in India to get a monorail. While putting in place a state-of-art system for urban transport is a cause of legitimate pride, question remains on the usefulness of what is essentially a suburban feeder system, not a full-fledged mass rapid transit. The monorail will carry 1.25 lakh people every day when fully operational in a sprawling metropolis of over 12 million people. India's population numbers always seems self-defeating as though some point out, connectivity in India's big cities is so

poor that any extra public transport is welcome. With cost of Rs.85 crore per km, the monorail projects are economical compared to metros, which however can carry a lot more people without affecting safety too much despite the inevitable overcrowding. With the success of monorail there are multiple technologies available that the city of Mumbai can use to improve transport service and thus improve the lives of millions who must commute everyday. Well done Maharashtra government, we are proud of your achievements for the people. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

fter throwing open the Chembur-Wadala corridor of the monorail to the public, the much anticipated Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd's (MMOPL) Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor is inching towards eventual commissioning soon. The Reliance Infrastructure promoted MMOPL has now commenced a two week final testing of the trains between Versova to Ghatkopar. Rinfra sources however are tigh-lipped about the actual date of commissioning and the fare structure. In a statement issued here yesterday, Rinfra disclosed that a 10-member team from the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow are currently conducting trials runs to assess the trains performance, oscillation and Emergency Braking Distance (EBD). Following these tests the RDSO will submit its report to the Commissioner for Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for final safety verification. The CMRS after detailed tests and trials will authorise MMOPL to commence passenger operations on the stretch. WANT TO KNOW ABOUT LAW

I completed my TYBA in English Literature in 2006 from Mithibai College and now I am interested in Law but I have scored 37 per cent in my TYBA so am I eligible to do Law or is there any other option? Please help. — Joceline Joy

So I want to know about the scope of my career in India and abroad and also suggest the universities offering MA or Msc in Forensic Psychology in India and abroad. —Karuna Forensic Psychology is offered only at the post-graduate level for students who have completed twoyear full time MA/MSc [Psychology] from a recognised University with 50 per cent marks. Grooming and etiquette play a vital role in job interviews Continued from pg 13 « states that often interviewers interpret a candidate’s sloppy dressing sense and physical grooming to be a translation of their casualness towards completing their professional commitments and despite the candidate having necessary qualifications to secure the job or the admission into the college, may overlook his candidature citing these shortcomings. In this context, the aspect of having competent English speaking skills also comes into the foreground. As the second-most widely spoken language in the world, English has long been the universal language of communication across countries. India has always been a country boasting of not just good English speakers, but competent ones as well. But where the country has impressive English speaking credentials, it so happens that at times in professional interviews, candidates inadvertently slip up,

using Hindi words to compensate for their momentary lapse to their English vocabulary. Mohan states that these lapses more often than not cost candidates heavily in the professional and higher educational set-up. “Since English is the preferred language in the corporate paradigm, it sure helps if candidates are competent in English speaking skills,” she adds. Prof. Asha Gala, HoD, Economics Department at SIES College of Arts, Science and College says that while the common perception among many of the younger generation is that they can merely walk-in through a job interview and get selected, what they fail to understand is that these few minutes are quite serious indeed, either making or marring one’s career forever. Humility, punctuality, assertiveness, non-aggressiveness, conviction, courage, determination, confidence and basic manners are facets of etiquette that Prof. Gala says are often forgotten. “Good lan-

PROF. ASHA GALA, HEAD OF DEPARTMENT, ECONOMICS, SIES COLLEGES OF ARTS, SCIENCE AND COMMERCE “An interview is a gateway to enter the new world. It could be for jobs and careers, higher studies and even for awards and scholarships. Candidates’ personality including inner self as well as external appearance is noted very subtly by interviewers. There is no need to be flashy and there doesn’t need to be blazers to speak about one’s formal appearance. But it does matter a lot about how one carries his portfolio and how systematically and methodically the contents are arranged. These are the things interviewers want to see as it says a lot about the candidate’s attention to detail.”

guage skills talk about candidates’ grasp of verbal communication but these elements talk about their command over non-verbal communication,” she emphasises. Considering that in today’s times, there are training institutes to ensure that the younger generation understands the import and relevance of these aspects, it becomes quite an easy task to cultivate them externally. Feedback and responses from the corporate world are often paused out on account of the interviewers’ intention to go through the candidatures’ aptitude keenly. But waited-out feedback and responses shouldn’t be a way of stalling the candidates because of their lack in these non-academic backgrounds, concludes Prof. Gala.

Want to pursue Business Administration in the UK I gave my SAT in May and scored a 1900. If I take two SAT subject tests, will it help boost my admission chances to a top university? The SAT Subject Tests measure a student’s mastery of commonly taught college preparatory courses ranging from Literature, Math (Level 1 &2), History, Sciences and a wide range of languages. Many colleges find them useful for admissions evaluation and for college course placement. We recommended that our students take the SAT subject tests while the material is still fresh in their mind. Depending on your college list, the admissions website should tell you which tests the college requires for admission. Even if a school does not require the Subject Tests

they may review these scores as further proof of your academic strengths. Which tests you take may also depend on what you are planning to study in college. For instance, if you plan to follow a “premed” track it would make more sense to take the biology test than the literature test. While the SAT Subject Tests are not required by most colleges, they can help you prove what a great student you are likely to be. I want to pursue a Doctorate of Business Administration in the UK.

Transparence, a competition for students of architecture and Interior design is a unique initiative by Saint-Gobain Glass to integrate the student community, architects and the industry. The event is supported by Gita Balakrishnan-run ‘Ethos’. The competition originally being held for Indian students since 2005 was made open for the SAARC nations to participate since 2013. Held at the NASA Convention 2014, and judged by an eminent jury comprising Ranjit Sabikhi from Ranjit Sabikhi Architects, India, Shahab Ghani Khan from Pakistan and Mustapha Khalid Palash from Bangladesh the fiercely contested competition saw Academy of Architecture, Mumbai emerge as the undisputed winners and walk away with a cash prize of INR 75,000. everything she ever wanted without spending a fortune – The Clearance Sale! It’s our time to buy what we want and not cut a hole into our pockets. I compare ‘finding a sale’ to hunting. You’ve got to hunt for sales. It’s all based on your luck. Finding a 70 per cent off sale at Mango or Zara is like finding a beautiful deer while hunting. It’s all on luck. I know that every time I find a flat 40 per cent sale at Maxx, I will pick up every penny of my savings and run to the store and finally give my heart comfort at the billing counter. When those Tresmode heels match with her birthday dress, I can bet nothing else would make her feel happier than that. Shopping is bliss for a girl. It’s as if she is glorified for those few minutes. Every new product, every first try, it makes us girls feel content in the moment. We feel joyful and the world just falls into place for us. That’s why we end up buying a million items in one go! In conclusion, I can clearly state that I might just be suffering from Oniomania – also known as CBD (Compulsive Buying Disorder). It’s something every girl suffers from deep inside but just never admits. There is a new product every day and we want them every day. So we go on and on. It’s never-ending.

I

became an entrepreneur due to my role models from the business world, cultural and family influences and my education and training in Management and Finance. I attended Keble College, Oxford University from 1996 to 2000. I did my Masters in Engineering, Economics and Management. My professors were intellectual leaders in their respective fields with the ability to rouse curiosity in their students. The engineering content was interesting, but more focused on theory. I enjoyed the management and economics subjects more. I took up summer internships every year at leading companies in India and in the UK since the age of 16. I spent more than two years at Goldman Sachs, London which gave me a strong grounding in corporate finance. We also had a three month training period in New York. Education helped me in different ways. Knowledge, skills and competency helped me a lot, but more importantly, it shaped my world view, my life goals and my self-understanding. I also built life-long friendships and relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. You learn how to be yourself and yet find common ground to relate to almost any other person. I had a mixed friend circle. I enjoy the company of friends who have shared interests, but some of my close friends are very different people, and I like it that way. In college also, I had different groups of friends, each very special from whom I learned a lot. I tend to get along best with people who are grounded and down to earth. Apart from the partying, drinking and dating at Oxford, we enjoyed long philosophical debates and discussions, and indulged in a lot of sports. Our favorite place was our college bar, designed like a spaceship, and a pub next door called the Lamb and Flag, as well as some of the amazing libraries across the university where I preferred doing my coursework. Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with some stunning architecture. Our college was and still is the only red-brick building in the university. People either love it or dislike it, but I quite liked it. The first day at college was a little unnerving and exciting at the same time. We had a whole week of orientation. The first

place as it becomes a platform to understand best practices in a field, but nothing substitutes for learning on the job learning. Both are important and it is important to get the right balance. It is possible to have the best of both worlds. My advice for students is, make the most of your years as students. Look for opportunities to learn, experiment, and get out of your comfort zones. This is your chance to figure out what you enjoy doing and what you’re good at, and the best way to figure it out, is to try out different things. Also, constantly look for living and historical examples of excellence. Be inspired to be your best and do your best for yourself, not to show the world. And most importantly, enjoy the ride. Do not let the pressure of competing get to you. Being happy is as, if not more, important than being successful. For those who want to study abroad, remember that the system of education is different. At Oxford, the system is tutorial based, where the subject tutors have individual tutorial sessions with students, typically two students at a time. The personal time spent with tutors – who are academic leaders in their respective fields – is invaluable. It raises the expectation from the student, to be well prepared for these sessions. The school system there includes bunching students based on the capability levels for each subject. So if you are excellent at Math, you will be put in a class for more advanced Math students. If you are weak in Economics, you will be put in an appropriate set. This helps the teacher teach at a level and pace appropriate for a set of students. There is also recognition of the importance of all round development and focus on areas like interpersonal skills, leadership, personality development etc. These skills often play a more important role than technical skills and knowledge. Internships are also very important. My internships were with companies of varying sizes and in different sectors, ranging from a small glass manufacturing company, to a large multinational chemicals firm, and a homegrown telecom company. The projects I did were typically goal oriented and also gave me an exposure across functions. This range of experiences through my internships gave me a multi-functional understanding of business, and a deep respect for people across departments. I was fortunate to have had great mentors at each of these organizations, and like them, there are so many inspiring examples of people who go out of their way to few days were all about making new friends and getting to help and encourage others and be great role models for youngknow everyone. The best education systems create adequate sters. inbuilt practical content. Classroom training does have its As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

In Maths, use short methods for calculations and skip irrelevant steps to save time. • The most important thing is clarity of concepts and regular practice in problem solving. • JEE (Main) is not difficult. However, its questions do need different tricks to solve tricky ones. • Focus on solving the problems on your own, while preparing for the exam. Start with conventional methods of problems solving but improvise constantly and build your own shortcuts and ways of problem solving. • Both speed and strike rate matter. You need to be quick and accurate to achieve high scores. High speed with less accuracy can actually ruin your results. • Never use a calculator while preparing for the JEE (Main). Being adept in mental calculations can actually increase your speed to a great extent. • Select your questions wisely. If you solve easy and average questions correctly, you can easily get through. You may attempt difficult ones later to make a better rank, after having attempted the easy and moderate questions. • Gather and implement tips, gain confidence, be positive, and you will ace the JEE (Main). Mathematics: In Mathematics, 32 per cent questions were easy, 58 per cent were of medium level and 10 per cent were difficult. More weightage was given to chapters of Algebra , Co-ordinate Geometry and Calculus than Vector and Three Dimensional Geometry and Trigonometry. Exper t Advice/Recommendation: Always attempt theoretical questions first and then questions which require calculation. It's human nature that if you attempt a few confident questions in the beginning, you feel loaded with positive energy thus increasing your efficiency and speed for the rest of the paper. It is advisable to avoid numerical questions in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the exam.

Attendees stood stunned with Saket Modi, an ethical hacker, finding a clever way to hack one unlucky individual’s phone who, needless to say, was left red faced as his text messages were no longer under his control. Soon after, the last talk of the day turned out to be one of pure motivation, with Siddharth GJ talking about his struggles with cerebral palsy. This event was one that changed many lives & opened individuals to new ideas. Those who weren’t present missed out on some eye – opening, downright inspiring talks but will hopefully find a way to come next time, for the ideas were limitless.

in JEE MAIN 2014: • Opt for the Offline Exam if you do not feel comfortable with the online exam. • Watch your speed if you are appearing in online mode, make use of the rough sheet given to you wherever necessary, and immediately update the invigilator in case you encounter a technical problem with your system. • Read and follow all the instructions given in the question papers carefully and plan your time, leaving extra time for revision. Even those appearing for the online exam will be given the option of scrolling back to the attempted questions and changing answers if necessary, before they actually submit. • Prioritize after a quick glance, and start answering the questions you know best and move progressively to the ones you find difficult after attempting the complete paper. You must attempt questions carrying no negative marks • Don’t be nervous if you find the paper tough since it is the relative performance that counts. Hence, put your best analytical mind to work, it will take you ahead

K.C. College’s University of Cincinnati welcomes Diamond Jubilee Indian students for their LLM program K celebrations

The College of Law at the University of Cincinnati is welcoming Indian students to apply for its Masters in Law program (LL.M.). The varsity is also offering scholarships up to USD 12,000 to deserving students based on their academic and professional merits. Sharada Iyer spoke to Professor Nora Burke Wagner, Program Director at the varsity to know more about its LLM curricula and these opportunities that have been sought to be provided to the deserving Indian students There would be a discrepancy between the course program of the Masters course offered in the University of Cincinnati and the bachelor’s course program that a student would have completed here in India, how will the discrepancy be resolved and reconciled? Coursework in Cincinnati Law’s LLM program will focus on US law and the legal system in the United States. LLM students will take classes that explore the general, foundational elements of the US legal system as well as more specialised courses that focus on a particular subject matter area such as Intellectual Property or Corporations, for example. Prior study of law will be helpful, particularly given Indian and US law are both derived in large part from the English common law system.

There being a basis in fact that law courses form a core educational paradigm in any country, what are the advantages/problems that Indian students would have to face by opting for a Masters program in Law from the University of Cincinnati vis-à-vis those students who would have completed their bachelor’s in law from an American university? Cincinnati Law’s LLM in the US Legal System is open only to students who have earned a law degree (such as a bachelor’s in law) outside of the US. With the economic turbulence affecting the job market both in India as well as in the USA, is there a threat for students opting for LLM in the University of Cincinnati to not be able to secure a good job after the completion of their course program? The knowledge and experience gained in Cincinnati Law’s LLM program will be valuable to lawyers and employers (law firms, corporations, and the like) who represent US companies or other clients who wish to do business in the US or with US businesses. The LLM may also be an advantage to a lawyer who wishes to work in higher education. Is there any internship program being offered as a part of this program? LLM students at Cincinnati Law are able to participate in a variety of experiences that contribute to practical learning and networking. LLM students may be considered

<<Professor Nora Burke Wagner for our externship program during their second semester. Incoming LLM students are offered scholarships to participate in the Institute for the Global Practice of Law, an intensive month-long program on cross-border lawyering which brings together lawyers from all over the world to learn from and network with each other and US lawyers in Cincinnati. Could you elaborate on some of the rich history of your varsity and the value addition it has been providing to students who have chosen to be a part of its glorious educational journey? Established in 1833, the University Of Cincinnati College Of Law (Cincinnati Law) is the fourth oldest continuously operating law school in the country. Notable alumni of include; a President of the United States, a Vice-President of the United States, three Speakers

of the US House of Representatives, a Secretary of Commerce, two US Solicitor Generals, a United States Attorney General, two US Supreme Court Justices (including a Chief Justice), four state Supreme Court Justices (including two Chief Justices), six Governors and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Could you elaborate on some of the faculty members and their area of expertise? These are a few of the many faculty members from whom Cincinnati Law LLM students may choose to take classes. Jacob Katz Cogan teaches contracts, international business transactions, public international law, and related courses, and writes about the informal and operational dimensions of international decision processes and contemporary changes in and challenges to the character and organization of the

international legal system, and global governance more generally. Felix Chang is director of the Institute for the Global Practice of Law (IGPL). Established in 2010, the IGPL designs innovative programming for legal practitioners around the world. Professor Chang’s scholarship focuses on financial reform, particularly the intersections of financial and antitrust regulation. Bert B. Lockwood is a graduate of St. Lawrence University (B.A.), Syracuse University College of Law (J.D.), and the University of Virginia Law School (LL.M. with a specialization in International Law). At the College of Law, Professor Lockwood teaches courses in Criminal Law, Conflict of Law, Indian Law, Constitutional Law, International Human Rights, Protection of Economic and Social Rights, International Women’s Rights, and the Liberian Constitution.

Beautification is no longer the sole prerogative of the private sector, but now also a duty of every government. Beautification projects require the assistance and guidance of landscapers and architects, but before clamping the reigns of national-level landscaping, Naressa Coutinho finds out about small-scale garden designing from Mumbai’s self-made landscaper, David Corrie. Who is a landscaper and what does garden designing involve? A landscaper is a person who can visualise the modification of the visual features of land. He or she needs to be able to arrange different elements together to create a visually appealing environment. Garden designers are skilled specialists dealing with master planning of landscapes and design of gardens, consulting with advice for clients, providing direction and supervision during construction, and the management of establishment and maintenance once the garden has been created. They are able to survey the site, and prepare drawings for the development of a garden from concepts to construction, and resource the plant and building materials. Garden design is the process of designing and creating plans for layout and planting of gardens and landscapes. The main characteristics include designing gardens, drawing up plans, and deciding what plants grow where.

What is the scope for growth as a garden designer? There is a huge scope for growth as a garden designer simply because there are so many different elements that go into the development of a landscape. One can choose to specialize in a particular area or one can also undertake the entire process right from conceptualizing to implementation. Because of the various elements that go into garden design, like selection of plants, terrain, water, planting, constructed elements, etc. there is tremendous scope for the garden designer to always increase his knowledge base and skill set. The scope of the

project from start to finish, beginning with the planning stages and ending with technical execution and maintenance of the project. In addition, he or she has to coordinate with suppliers and vendors to obtain all necessary supplies and ensure that deadlines are met. Good communication skills are mandatory for landscapers. The first stage of any project involves a planning session with clients, when details of the landscaping project are discussed. Most importantly, a landscaper must have creative foresight in order to visualize and develop a garden area.

garden designer has come to mean so much more than someone who arranges features of the landscape or garden attractively. What made you choose this garden-based career? For me, it was always the fulfilment of a long-term passion that got me into this field. I have no formal training in landscaping and even got myself a masters degree in finance before I decided to follow my passion and take on landscaping as a full time career. Nature Nurturer came up as a result of this. Initially we focussed on

There are quite a few courses available for students interested in studying about landscaping. There are diplomas, graduate, post graduate and doctorate courses available for students in this field. WHAT’S UP WITH AAP?

AAP is basically a movement. It gained prominence in post Delhi elections. Within a very short span of time, more and more people started getting associated with the party to full fill their political ambitions. Since most of them joined the party, post their glorified victory, they may not associate themseleves with the core party philosophy. This is one reason for dissent among their members. The party is centered around Arvind Kejriwal who has so far not been able to infuse the core values among its members for lack of time. The party is aiming to build a skyscraper on marshy land without its foundation being strong. —Rajendra Pareek Sales Manager

It has been less than two months since AAP has come to power. We need to give them more time to settle down specially with Congress, BJP and the media trying to magnify everything against AAP. People need to show more faith in Kejriwal, he can’t bring in changes overnight. He has given us hope like no one else in the recent times. —Rahul Bhuyan Executive

AAP came in to power with a lot of promise. They are being supported from the outside, they have a lot to prove and people are expecting lot from them. There will be mudslinging and also internal issues because the party is at a nascent stage and it is growing beyond what it was earlier expected. I feel Kejriwal has a long way to go and lot to learn with respect to keeping his team tightly knit. What he has brought is a fresh breath of air and it is time that the people of whichever state elects their partymen to have patience as change can never be brought out in a day and it is a gradual process. —Narender Yadav Sales Executive

cent of the people use FB, 48 per cent use MySpace and 14 per cent use LinkedIn. I have seen people dig deep inside their BBs (Blackberry) to give out details of each and every moment of their lives. One of my friends recently updated saying “Facebook is my morning newspaper”. I have also come across many people who just click pictures to upload on FB and other sites! These people seriously need to give themselves a break. Though there are positive benefits of social networking websites like promoting talent, interacting with people with same interests, giving out useful information to people, healthy discussions, etc., there are negative impacts as well. Teens may be victims of sexual abuse, threat to life, insults through messages, and damage to social and professional image etc. The youth today prefers staying at home and chatting with friends. They do not want to play outdoor games, and do not take interest in what is happening in the outside world. This, in turn, makes them lethargic and lazy, and also affects their health. A study also states that teens spend 80 per cent of their time on social networking sites. Well, if this continues, things are going to be scarier in the near future.

Markets Close Flat

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (February 5, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (February 04, 2014) a net 0.90 points (0.01%) and closed at the 6000 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5947 points level on weak global cues. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5933 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.03 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and then registered the day’s high at the 6017 points level at 2.31 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session moved in a range of 85 points and closed at the psychologically important 6000 points level. Sentiment turned bullish towards the end of a session and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 31 were gainers, while 19 were losers. Buying was seen in banking, FMCG, power, auto, realty and consumer durables, while selling was witnessed in IT, technology, healthcare, metal and oil & gas stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 16.33%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 717 were gainers, 722 were losers and 67 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 30 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is flat. No signal here.

support is at the 5958 points level. The next support is at the 5877 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6372 points level. The next resistance is at the 6424 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5984 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5950. Support (2) = 5900. Resistance (1) = 6035. Resistance (2) = 6069.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:

On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a long white body candle on substantially higher volumes as the markets opened down with a gap and closed at a higher level. This is positive. However, the index is still below its 5, 15 and 25 days moving averages and all the three averages are declining and also negatively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate weakness. All these indicate a negative bias. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels. Incidentally, the index is near its 200 days average which is at the 5974 points level. (It tested that level intra-day yesterday). This could be a strong support level and there is a possibility that the index could reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, than it would indicate a change in the primary trend and a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 6057) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 6201) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 6205) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 5974) Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market but with a neutral bias.

he net worth of India’s billionaire community has soared 12-fold in 15 years - enough to eliminate absolute poverty twice over in the country, where income inequality is also on the rise, according to the IMF. Seven out of ten people in the world today live in countries where inequality has increased over the past three decades, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Monday. “We are all keenly aware that income inequality has been rising in most countries. “In India, the net worth of the billionaire community increased 12fold in 15 years, enough to eliminate absolute poverty in this country twice over, she said while delivering the Richard Dimbleby Lecture in

London, according to the copy of the speech made available by the IMF. The richest 85 people in the world own the same amount of wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population, Lagarde said. “In the US, inequality is back to where it was before the Great Depression, and the richest 1 per cent captured 95 per cent of all income gains since 2009, while the bottom 90 per cent got poorer, Lagarde said, ruing that in the past, economists have underestimated the importance of inequality. Observing that over the next three decades, the world’s population will get much larger and much older, she said that in 30 years time, there will be about two billion more people on the planet, including three quarters of a billion people over the age of 65. By 2020, for the first time

ever, there will be more old people over 65 than children under five, Lagarde said. “The geographical distribution will also change - young populations in regions like Africa and South Asia will increase sharply, while Europe, China, and Japan will age and shrink. “In the coming decades, we expect India to surpass China, and Nigeria to surpass the United States, in terms of population. And both China and India will start ageing in the near future. “This can create problems on both ends of the demographic spectrum - for youthful countries and for greying countries. Right now, the young countries are seeing a ‘youth bulge’, with almost three billion people half the global population - under 25. This could prove a boon or a bane, a demographic dividend or a demographic time bomb, Lagarde said. (PTI / Washington)

Globally, Facebook - which turns 10 today - reported 1.23 billion MAUs, up 16% year-on-year, and 945 million mobile MAUs, up 39% from the year-ago period. The discoms (in other states) are saved by state governments through the TPAs, under which we get payment from the states under the state allocation, he said. Try not to push your luck, since you are already committed elsewhere.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Helplessness and a vacuum feel claustrophobic. Do not sit around and mope, it is totally uncharacteristic of you. A walk in the outdoors should cheer you up and put things in the right perspective in your mind. You will get a chance to push things through that are close to your heart. Your preoccupation with your own problems affects your personal relationship. Perhaps you should share your problems to ease the burden.

With too much on your mind you may not be in the mood for love or a romantic meeting. You just need space and time to yourself to sort your thoughts out.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): News or a message from afar is favorable. This piece of news requires you to work overtime that could upset your plans for other important issues Since you cannot change your agenda at short notice there could be an overlapping of appointments. Some happy event taking place in your family will turn the family atmosphere into a festival of sorts. All differences and discord vanish.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): You could feel that there is nothing much happening in your life and it seems to be the end of the line. You need to be patient and avoid interfering with natural process of things. Destiny has its own way of working and all our endeavors to change or improve matters are in vain. Togetherness in a marital relationship seems to be missing perhaps because you have other issues on your mind. There could be further distances if you are not careful.

You should be able to obtain the results you desire by combining efforts with the work of others. Family will be supportive of your actions. You will meet a person of great charm. TIGER KEEPS HIS DATE WITH INDIA N CLEAN STRIKE... Golfer Tiger Woods tees off at the Delhi Golf Course on his first visit to India. [Below] Woods acknowledges the crowd’s presence.

EW DELHI: The legendary Tiger Woods kept his date with India as the world number one golfer not only tamed the difficult Delhi Golf Course with a nine-under score but also conquered hearts of the thousands of people who came to have a glimpse of him. In a lucrative 18-hole exhibition match, Woods mesmerised the spectators with his immaculate sense of the game as he hardly put a foot wrong and had most greens in regulation in the DGC, which is known for its narrow fairways. The top golfer has been reportedly paid Rs 15 crore to play a round of golf with Munjal and his guests. A visage of Woods appeared around the fairways after compere Alan Wilkins announced the golfer's arrival at the first hole. After a few practice shots and exchange of pleasentaries, Woods teed off amid a couple of thousands people who had thronged the DGC, which was supposed to be a hushed-up private event here. Dressed in a blue tee-shirt, black trousers and white cap, Tiger started off with a wonderful shot straight down the middle, which was the hallmark of the man although the day as he played along with his host Munjal exclusively for the first nine holes and returned with a card of six-under. In the next nine holes, Woods was accompanied by Rajiv Singh of DLF and Justice Vikramajit Sen of Supreme Court on the 10th and 11th holes, while leading Indian woman golfer Sharmila Nicollet played a couple of holes at the 12th and 13th,

before media honchos Prannoy Roy and Aveek Sarkar joined the golf great at the DGC. On the last three holes, it was a skins game between two teams -- Pawan Munjal-Tiger Woods vs Shiv Kapur and Anirban Lahiri, which ended on an even keel with Kapur winning the 17th hole with a birdie and Munjal and Woods pocketing the 18th hole with both hitting birdies on the last. After the end of the 18th hole, Woods waved to the more than 5000 crowd which had gathered near the stand and cheered the American legend, whose visit was organised by World Sports Group (WSG). "Thanks so much for the time, it was an absolute blast. It is hard to say how much fun I had today. It was a narrow golf course and I was nervous with my tee shot. My best buddy Arjun (Atwal) told me so much about India and I am happy

Tendulkar’s so cool, says Woods after meeting him

They are legends in their own domain, but it seems iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has managed to floor ace golfer Tiger Woods when the two greats caught up in the Capital on Tuesday. After meeting Tendulkar and his family here, Woods wrote on micro-blogging site 'Twitter' that the batting genius was a "cool" guy. "Just met a cricket legend and his family. Sachin Tendulkar @sachin_rt was so cool and loved being welcomed to India," Tiger wrote on his twitter handle. Woods met Tendulkar and his family on his arrival at a five star hotel here. While Woods is in town to take part in an exhibition match at a private event at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC), Tendulkar is here to receive Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour. Tendulkar, who retired from all forms of cricket in November last year, has been a keen follower of golf.

THE MASTER WITH HIS ‘RATNA’... President Pranab Mukherjee confers legendary cricketer SachinTendulkar with country's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. to be here. Thank You so much," said Woods, who donated some portion of the money he earned from the event to charity organisation. Woods found the bunker only twice but he found his way out on both the occasions. The only time, he had to drop a shot at the 11th hole when his tee shot landed on the bushes of the DGC. It cost him a bogey. Munjal, dressed in a green teeshirt and white trousers, played the entire stretch of 18 holes and after

the round promised that he would bring Woods to play a tournament in India soon. "The way Woods was playing, I think he should come back again to play in Indian Open. I am honoured to be able to get him to India on his first visit. Let me say it won't be his last visit to India," Munjal said. The veil of secrecy that enveloped the run-up to the event didn't stop people from stealing a glimpse of Woods as they came in hordes and followed him all through out the 18holes.

Great run by Mumbai horses – Starry Eye and Circle of Life By Timur

T

he run of Starry Eyes and Circle of Life was indeed great. Two trainers Cooji Katrak and Pesi Shroff have worked wonders with the horses. Pesi has been patiently improving Circle of Life and there was hope he would make. Cooji Katraik had some problems with Starry Eyes, but he did not give up but worked hard on the horse. Starry Eyes and Circle of Life placed second and third in McDowell Signature Derby. What was disappointing was the run of Murioi. It was a hot favourite. It did not reproduce its Guineas run. Maybe in the Derby, the distance was against it. It came 4th in the Derby race. M.A.M. Ramasway must have been disappointed by its run. The horse did not live up to its expectations. Half the number of races were mercifully won by

favourites. It looked in the beginning of the afternoon, all would be well and favourites would win most the race, but that did not happen. In the first, well-backed horse Hidden Asset won. Narendra Lagad trained horse Double Diamond did attract betting, but it could only place. Way Out, Cooji Katrak trained horse was available at 2 to 1. In a spirited late dash it won the race. In the Kanga Gold Trophy, the winner was Supreme Star which was trained by M. Narredu. It was available at 7 to 2 in the ring. A great run was by Deja Vu which was available at 20 to 1. It missedmaking it by just a shorthand. Supreme Star and Deja Vu forget it out stride by stride but the former won by a shorthand. Sheer Class, owned by Vijay Mallya and trained by Pesi Shroff won the Antiquity Blue

IN BRIEF Mundhe, Gogte bag titles

Manchester City's Edin Dzeko and Chelsea's Nemanja Matic battle for the ball during their English Premier League soccer match at the Etihad stadium in Manchester, England.

ANCHESTER: Branislav Ivanovic's first-half cracker and Jose Mourinho's tactical mastery helped classy Chelsea claim a 1-0 win on Monday at Premier League title rivals Manchester City who failed to score at home for the first time this season. Chelsea's battling victory put the Londoners level on 53 points with second-placed City and within two points of league leaders Arsenal after 24 games. It also ended City's run of scoring in 61 consecutive home league games since 2010. Ivanovic struck just after the half-hour mark when Ramires' effort was blocked by Vincent Kompany and fell for the Serbian right back, who let fly first time from the edge of the box and saw his powerful left-foot shot nestle in the far corner. City had chances to equalise but Chelsea, who also hit the woodwork three times, were al-

ways a threat on the break in an absorbing contest, which was decided by Mourinho's ability to find the perfect blend between attack and defence. "We showed a lot of character, and created a lot of chances. We spent a good couple of days working on their strengths and weaknesses - that is typical Jose Mourinho," Chelsea captain John Terry told Sky Sports. "We have a couple of games at home now to kick on. We must win them as we dropped points against West Ham last week," he added referring to a frustrating 00 draw at Stamford Bridge. Monday's game was billed as a potential early title decider by some, such has been City's incredible form and the widely held belief that wily Chelsea are their most likely challengers despite Arsenal having led the race for much of the season. saved by Joe Hart after the shaky home defence had fallen away during another foray by the Londoners. Purists feared the often cautious Mourinho might "park the bus", an accusation the Portuguese coach has used about sides playing too defensively against his team, but instead the game was easy on the eye. A lively atmosphere in an unusually dry Manchester added to the sense of occasion but there was stunned silence apart from an ecstatic band of away fans as soon as Ivanovic struck the winner having not been tracked by Silva. "They scored a beautiful goal, not an easy goal, he hit it from a long way out with the outside of his foot but before their goal we had clear chances to score, so I don't think there was a Chelsea continually broke at pace problem with the way we and Ramires tapped the ball into played," City boss Manuel Pellethe net with the offside flag raised grini told reporters as he bebefore having a very good effort moaned injuries in his squad.

with the meanest defence in the league, both managers chose a more defensive midfield than usual to try to take charge of the game at the Etihad Stadium. Centre backs Martin Demichelis and David Luiz were employed in the centre of the park for City and Chelsea respectively and the visitors' playmaker Oscar was left on the bench but the game started openly with both sides having decent sniffs at goal. Free-scoring City, without injured Argentine talisman Sergio Aguero, threatened when Alvaro Negredo fired over and Yaya Toure twice went close but David Silva had the best opportunity after 18 minutes when his close range finish squirmed wide.

Anand draws with Carlsen, occupies joint fourth spot Z

URICH: Viswanathan Anand mantained his composure and played out an easy draw against reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fifth and final round of classical section at the Zurich Chess challenge here. Former world champion Anand finished the classical section on four points with one win, two draws and two losses and the Indian will have to do some recovery act in the rapid section that follows. Carlsen continued to lead the tables handsomely as his nearest rival Levon Aronian suffered a defeat at the hands of Fabiano Caruana of Italy. Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw against world champion Magnus Carlsen. moved to sole third spot on five points under the unique scoring system in place here that gives two points for a win and one for a draw. Anand and Hikaru Nakamura of the United States share the fourth

spot on four points each. In the other game of the day, Boris Gelfand of Israel played out a draw against Nakamura to take his tally to three points in the six-player round-robin tournament. The rapid leg of the event will now begin with five games to be played with reverse colours on the final day. For each win here, however, only one point will be awarded and this makes Carlsen a huge favourite for the title. Anand played it very safe against Carlsen. Up against the Berlin defense, the Indian went for a quite anti-system that led to exchange of pieces at regular intervals. The pawn structure was symmetrical giving no hopes to either player and the exchanges led

to a opposite colour Bishops endgame in fairly quick time. The game went on for 40 moves before the duo signed peace. Aronian was subdued by Caruana out of the Marshall Gambit. Caruana gave his extra pawn in the middle game to reach a slightly better ending and then forcibly won a pawn. The technicalities remained for a long time and Aronian crumbled under pressure in the end, making a blunder when he could have still posed resistance. The game lasted 66 moves. Gelfand and Nakamura played a quite draw in a closed Sicilian. Nakamura with white did not get any complications favouring him and the two decided to repeat moves early in the middle game.
