Do you think corruption will be the big issue for elections, or price rise? Rachna Kuradia Social Media Executive Nothing is going to change, so why waste time shouting over what is never going to change. Speaking against price rise is one of the greatest past-times among the middle class, so it is not a new issue for us. Aiman Khan Gym Trainer For me, it has become difficult to decide whether to vote or not as corruption will never end and when it comes to price rise, some way or the other, we consumers are fleeced by means of heavy taxes. Hitesh Keswani Exporter

Understanding corruption is like fighting it because it is we who have allowed corruption to grow and now we are facing problems which we have ourselves created Ajay Valecha Photographer Price rise has already been a factor for me for casting my vote according to the parties.

aharashtra government on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that an authority for monitoring wetlands in the state would be constituted within four weeks while an expert committee has confirmed that wetlands in neighbouring Vasai are being destroyed due to construction. A division bench, headed by Justice V.M. Kanade, was hearing a public interest litigation by Vanashakti, an NGO, which alleges destruction of wetlands in suburban Malwani, Dahisar, Vasai, Esselworld, Oshiwara, Kanakia Nagar in Mira Road, Kasheli in Thane and Palm Beach Road area in Navi Mumbai. The NGO alleges police did not heed the complaints in this regard. However, government pleader G W Mattos said today that police were not empowered to take action in these matters but Maharashtra Pollution Control Board was. The government would ask MPCB to act against those responsible, he said. The government today also submitted a report of an expert committee which inspected two wetland sites in Vasai tehsil of neighbouring Thane district. ust on Thursday, we had reported that the Delhi High Court had issued a stay order on the release of the film 'Gulaab Gang'. In the ruling, the Delhi High Court had stated that the film would not release in any format until May 8. This ruling came after a petition was filed by Sampat Pal, the leader of the real life Gulaabi Gang, who claimed that the makers of the film had not acquired the necessary permissions from her before commencing the film, says an agency report.

Besides, the MU also delayed the results of Engineering Semester VII results this year, declaring them three months after the exams. Dr. M.M. Khan, Registrar, MU said, “We have already released the number of students and exam centres for the Ph.D. entrance test last evening. The process for uploading the hall tickets is going on and will be done late night on Thursday”.

Now it is learnt that that yesterday's ruling of the High Court has been lifted. With this new ruling by the High Court, the film will release today, as planned. 'Gulaab Gang' which features Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla in lead roles will now release as per schedule across the country.

Areas near Kanakia Park too are witnessing destruction of coastal wetlands "at a feverish pitch through incessant dumping of debris", says the report. "Systematic attempt is being made to fill up the wetlands with debris. Several new apartment complexes have come up in the area, which indicate a serious threat to wetlands from real estate developers", the report adds.

ational carrier Air India has sacked 16 air hostesses and a flight purser in the past nine days for not following flight duty time limitation (FDTL) norms. "The action (against the 17 cabin crew) is not off-handed. The management had been asking them to follow FDTL rules for over six months now but they failed to do so. We took the decision only after the indiscipline crossed the tolerance limits," a senior Air India official told PTI. FDTL are guidelines governing the aspects such as the maximum daily flight duty period including flying hours limitations, rest period, staff-on-duty travel and number of landings allowed per pilot as well as the crew. The Civil Aviation Ministry had in September 2012 directed Air India to immediately implement the FDTL. Noting that Air India can't be an exception to the flight duty time norms, mandatory across the airlines, the official said these cabin crew wanted duty hours "by their choice and as per the earlier rules agreed with the unions". "These rules were made at the time when Air India was doing financially well. But now situation is different. We made cabin crew understand this. While most of the people started following the new rules, these people did not. Hence the action," the official said. The carrier last month issued a general notice, warning crew of serious action including termination, the official said. "We feel that all issues can be sorted out as long as flights are taking off on time. But February was worst for us in terms of on time performance." As against an industry average of 75 hours of monthly flying, Air India averages only 52 hours on international routes. In domestic sector it is slightly better at 55 hours per month, the official said. "We can not compete at this average, particularly when we are going to be a part of the Star Alliance. So accountability has to be there," the official said. Though the Airline cabin crew association had approached the various courts seeking a stay to implementation of the new FDTL, both Bombay and Delhi High courts refused any relief.

SPECIAL REPORT

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has come a long way from being labelled as a toothless tiger and has acquired some muscle of its own. It has already begun to flex its muscle in respect to election manifestos and transfers of bureaucrats, to keeping a hawkeye on election funding and expenditures of political parties and candidates. Besides that, it has launched several initiatives like Voter Help Centres, Toll Free Numbers and advertising campaigns to educate voters about their rights and duties. Admittedly, in some issues like banning of Opinion Polls, electoral reforms, it still has to rely on the whims and fancies of the very same elected representatives for whom it holds elections. Prashant Hamine reports. No scope to hide details

withstanding the court case, as a 'printing mistake.' Today the EC now in a bid to provide a level playing field for all the candidates has decided to take matters in its own hands. In a far reaching initiative taken recently at an all party meeting the ECI has now issued guidelines for political parties and candidates that seeks to restrain them from showering outlandish freebies and sops just like that in the hope that the electorate will be swayed by it and vote them to power.

Henceforth, as a diligent voter, one can take the political parties and candidates to task if one feels that the parties or their candidates are taking them for a ride or are trying to hide something from them. The EC has now made it even more difficult for candidates in respect of filing nomination papers. From now on, no candidate wanting to contest the elections can leave any column blank in the nomination form and affidavits. This in a way thwarts attempts by candidates to hide uncomfortable information related to the true market value of their financial assets or any criminal But here too it was the Supreme Court which, cases pending against them. in its verdict of July 5, 2013, directed the EC to act and thus has now issued draft guidelines for political parties and contesting candidates Expectedly enough, with the screws tighten- wherein their election manifestos shall not ing on the political parties and candidates, a contain anything repugnant to the ideals and bogey is being sought to be created against principles enshrined in the Constitution. Nevertheless, an exception can be made in this regard as the purpose of election manifesto is directly associated with the election process.” Not so long ago BJPs deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha had, in jest, remarked that it took him quite an hefty amount to win the Lok Sabha elections and this landed him in a spot of bother with the EC questioning him. While the political parties still have kept themselves out of the purview of the scrutiny of their account books in respect of party funds and donations, the EC is still trying to push the envelope further in a bid to tighten the screws on illegal election expenditure and bringing in greater transparency in election expenditure and party funding.

Infolines The EC has put in place a 24x7 national complaint monitoring cell with a toll free number 1950 to register complaints of poll expenditure violations. A similar toll free number at the state and district level will be announced shortly.

Preventive measures Besides this, flying squads will be set up at the assembly segment level. Well aware of the fact that illegal cash and items of inducement to voters often are smuggled by whatever means of transport that politicians and political parties can find, all border check posts and toll check posts are to be monitored for movement

Accountability

THE ECI HAS RECOMMENDED TO THE GOVERNMENT TO MAKE PAID NEWS AN ELECTION OFFENSE

In respect of Paid News, advertisements in electronic media and social media will require precertification from the chief electoral officer or the district election officer at the district level. In the case of Print Media, a candidate issuing advertisement will have to give an mandatory undertaking signed by two witnesses.

Guidelines

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to frame guidelines to ensure greater transparency in election expenditure and party funding. All contesting candidates will have to maintain an election expenditure register, they will have to open an election expenditure account with a recognised bank and all expenditure in excess of Rs 20,000 will have to be done by cheque. In the case of party poll expenses, the political parties in the case of general elections have to submit the details within 90 days of the elections getting over, and in the case of assembly elections within 75 days of the elections getting over.

of cash, liquor and other items of intended to bribe the voters. Apart from the election expenditure register maintained by the candidates, a shadow election expenditure register will be maintained which will be updated thrice during the campaign period and details of which will be uploaded on the ECI website. Financial intelligence agencies like Income Tax, DRI, ED and banks have been asked monitor suspicious financial transactions. Besides the flying squads, there will be static surveillance teams in all the parliamentary constituencies which will monitor poll related expenditure. As per section 10A of the Representation of the Peoples Act (RP Act) any candidate can face disqualification for three years if he or she tries to furnish false election expenditure level the observer.

t was a meeting, but a somewhat unusual one and that too at Versova, the locality dominated by Kolis. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi yesterday met representatives of the Kolis, the fishing community who put forth various demands pertaining to their business like the need for a separate ministry, farming status for fisheries and more subsidies on diesel. In a 40-minute interaction held near the sea at Versova, representatives of the fishing community highlighted their demands and expressed fear that with land costs in Mumbai skyrocketing by the day, builders and land sharks were eyeing sprawling fish markets. Rahul silently paid heed to the various grievances of the community. The Congress vice-president was accompanied by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and CWC member Gurudas

of separate fisheries ministry. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan intervened to say that there is budgetary provision of about Rs.1,600 crore for the animal husbandry ministry, under which the fisheries department falls. One of the locals said, all agriculture ministers the state has seen are not from the coastal region and do not understand the nitty gritty of fishing business. “They have no information of the sea. Like farmers, we do not get compensation, if there is drought (poor cache of fish in the sea),” another fisherman out. There was also a demand for expansion of the Sasoon Docks in south Mumbai. Another local highlighted the need for loans from nationalised banks at low interest rate. “Fishing is not a 12IT IS ONE CAP THAT FITS: Rahul smiles as he dons koli headgear in a show of solidarity. month business. Rahul told the gathering that like fishermen, even the farmers feel a lot needs to be done for them. “In the last ten years, the central government has worked to lay a solid foundation for sections of the society so that they feel secure,” he pointed out. The fishing community needs representation in the Legislative Assemblies and Parliament to get their voice heard, he added. Soon after the interaction, Rajashree Bhanjee, president of the Marol Bazaar Maasli Vikreta Koli Mahila Sanstha, said that she expressed fear before the Congress leader that fishermen’s land might be taken over by builders. There were 37 fish markets in Mumbai and all belonged to the municipal corporation. Kolis (fisher folk) have no stake in these premises. We fear builders might take them over. Similarly, subsidies in diesel should be enhanced, she made it clear.

party that did not listen, that used every tactic in the book to ensure that Parliament did not run, that basically “strangulated democracy”. In a conversation with the Party President, he said, he asked why the Speaker did not act firmly against those who consistently disrupted proceedings and was told that this was “not democratic”. It was party strategy to act this way, he said. Significantly, Rahul Gandhi said he thought no party would make that magic 272 figure in the coming elections, that would give a party the majority required for stability. Leadership to him was all about “being humble” and bowing down” to the people, listening to them and working towards empowering them. It was all a part of the “Congress DNA”.

Nor did he take kindly to the idea of projecting a particular man as a prime ministerial candidate. He was answering another questioner who wanted to know whether his projection as a future PM had been left too late. “Do you know how the prime minister is chosen?” he asked a rather bemused audience who felt they did know. Then he proceeded to spell it out, adding that he did not approve of the trend of fixing on a specific individual as the face of an election. It was not about a Modi or a Gandhi he said, adding that the BJP had started the trend and the media was adding to the hype. The BJP came in for an attack that verged on a “full frontal” . They had stolen or claimed for themselves some

of the Congress party's best ideas and initiatives. Among them was liberalisation, the IT revolution in the country, RTI, NREGA, the Right to Food. “Now they are claiming Mahatma Gandhi as well”, he added. He dismissed as unimportant the various charges made against him, including his way of functioning, and talked about giving tickets to those who can win. But the main issue in this case was the process of handing out tickets, which should be open and empowering enough to attract the ordinary man into the political system. At present, he said, it was neither. Moreover, he declared, there was a tendency across parties, including his own, for three or four people to control the disManoj Singh

yet to get off the ground because of the elections, but Rahul Gandhi sounded upbeat and confident in Mumbai yesterday. In the city after four years, Congress Party vice president started his day by meeting with editors and senior journalists from print and television, talking about his “connect” with the city where his father was born, mentioning that he would like to spend “non-political” time here. But it was politics that everyone quizzed him about, and his views on a range of issues to do with his own party and its main opposition, the BJP. Was he worried that the surveys seemed to indicate that the going would be very tough for the Congress/ No, he said. “I don't go by surveys. They have never predicted we would win and we have.”

tribution of tickets to fight the elections. “This is what we have been trying to change in the Congress, and we have been working on implementing decentralisation in the Youth Congress and the NSUI”. Decentralisation is a favourite word, along with “strategic action,” and “opening up directionally”. So the passing of the RTI legislation was one of the party's most important strategic actions, transforming the fight against corruption. If decentralisation seems tobe faltering at the altar of self-interest within the party, the structural reforms he has been urging have also not taken off “because power is concentrated in the hands of a few”. In particular, he pointed to Parliament and the Legislative Assemblies with more than 5,000 people's representatives elected through a flawed democratic process that again ended up concentrating power in the hands of between 200 and 300 people who then decided the legislative future of the country. This had to change, he declared. Gandhi played the “insulting” card as well, describing as such several assumptions made by political leaders in the run up to the elections. Saying that Maharashtra would benefit by the Gujarat revenue model was one such insult to a state that was an industrial leader as well as high in the performance stakes. He deflected questions on pre- and post poll alliances as

well, talking about the tie up with Laloo Prasad Yadav in Bihar as a kind of Hobson's choice, saying in the case of West Bengal, that the party there was adamant about not tying up with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool, adding that it was not his style of functioning to ride rough-shod over decisions made by those at the state level. And he counted development and pulling 150 million people out of the Below Poverty Level category as the major achievements of the Congress. “That is the equivalent of three or four countries of people who are no longer poor”. He described the BJP as a

HC suggests setting up of separate cell for escort of undertrials By Philip Varghese

S

ix days after the Bombay High Court was informed that video-conferencing facility has been installed in 36 jails and 64 courts across Maharashtra to reduce the cost incurred on police escort for prisoners, the High Court on Thursday asked the state government to consider setting up of a separate cell in the police department which will be responsible only for the escort of undertrials taken from jails to courts for appearances. This comes as the court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Shaikh Abdul Naeem, an accused in the Aurangabad arms haul case, who claimed that he was not being produced in court due to lack of

escort police. The PIL had also sought for the government to set up video conference facilities in every jail and court across the state so that there is no delay in cases. Earlier, the prison authorities had suggested the use of Video Conference facility for production of accused for extension of their judicial custody. Following this, the court had directed the authorities to set up such convenience. Based on this, additional public prosecutor Aruna Kamat-Pai informed the court on Thursday that around 146 courts and 54 jails across the state would have video conference facilities by the end of this month. Before posting the matter by four weeks for further hearing, the division bench

Both were accusing each other of owing Rs.50 lakh”, said senior PI Shriram Mullemwar. The four took a gold bracelet and cash collectively worth Rs.2 lakh and also made him sign a bearer cheque of Rs.1 lakh from the Union Bank of India where Prabhudas held an account. “Mahendra also gave him a Rs.100 stamp paper to sign where he thereby admitted under duress that he owed him Rs.50 lakh”, Mullemwar said. Cops also recovered a country-made firearm from Dayanand along with two rounds after the quartet was arrested.

The residents had last year met Gandhi in Delhi who had assured them that he would ask Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to look into the matter and try and sort it out. Further, the Chief Minister in the Nagpur session had made a statement that he would meet the residents and the BMC to look for a possible solution. The Supreme Court now has given an opening to the residents and the BMC to find an amicable solution which the residents are very hopeful about, and expect the state government to help in the process. The CM had mentioned in the Nagpur session that he will do his best to help the residents to retain their homes. The residents are now awaiting a joint meeting with their MP, MLA and the BMC as assured to them by the chief minister. n authorised agent of Life Insurance of India (LIC) has been arrested for allegedly cheating a Mumbai-based diamond firm and the state-owned insurance company to the tune of Rs.89 lakh by forging group insurance policy documents, the police said on Thursday. Chetan Desai (59) was arrested on Monday after he was found to have 'duped' the LIC as well as the private firm by forging documents of the latter's 305 employees in the name of group insurance, Deputy Police Commissioner, Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Vasant Dhobale told PTI. According to the police,

the diamond company which was Desai's client, wanted its 305 employees to be insured through a group insurance policy with LIC. As the insurance contract worth Rs 5 crore was inked between the diamond firm and LIC, Desai was paid a 35 per cent commission of the total premium by the insurance company. The diamond firm renewed its policy with LIC for the second year through Desai, for which he was paid a five per cent commission on the total premium amount. For group insurance, the agent gets a 35 per cent commission for bringing a client and when the client renews the policy, a five per cent commission is paid to the agent. "Wanting more commis-

sion, Desai took the documents of the diamond company and instead of renewing the policies for the third year, he forged the documents and submitted them before LIC showcasing it as a new client," another officer said. While processing the documents of this fake "new client", LIC paid about Rs 89 lakh to Desai in phases but eventually realised that he had actually forged the documents of their old client. At the same time, learning that its documents have been forged, the diamond firm's representative complained to the police. After a preliminary probe, an FIR was registered early this year, EOW officials said, adding the accused was held on Monday.

he Mumbai crime branch have added the relevant sections of rape against the main accused in the Esther Anuhya case, on Thursday. According to the crime branch sleuths, though it's hard to precisely corroborate the evidence of rape against Chandrabhan Sanap alias Chaukiya, the circumstances point out that the deceased was raped. The main reason for this is that the examiners did find 'abrasion-like' marks on her private parts, added the police. Meanwhile, the police has seized the bike on which the accused had taken Anuhya to the Eastern Express highway at Kanjurmarg, at the pretext of dropping her at her home in Andheri. However, the details pertaining to the seizure of the bike has not been mentioned in the panchnama report, informed sources. Most

RAPE CHARGE ADDED of the crime branch sleuths are tight-lipped when asked about the reason about the absence of a significant detail in the report.Confirming the development, sources from the unit-7 of the crime branch added that they are also searching for Esther’s laptop, which Sanap claimed he threw from the train down in the water below the Titwala railway bridge while escaping to Nashik. Sanap had opened Esther’s laptop and got scared after seeing his face on the screen, which cops believe was a result of the front camera being activated. Meanwhile, the police, in a bid to make a watertight case are trying to take as much statements of witnesses from the city as well as places where Sanap had fled after committing the crime, in-

cluding his family members to whom he had informed about killing Anuhya. Meanwhile, pointing towards Sanap’s ability to act, sources pointed how he ensured two persons who had seen him at the LTT on January 5, were not able to identify him later due to his changed looks and clueless demeanor. The Kurla GRP had detained him earlier in mid-February but released him since his involvement could not be confirmed and identity could not be established. According to crime branch sources, on the morning of January 5, before spotting Esther, Sanap had an argument with the canteen manager and the attendant of an AC coach, over purchase of a cold drink. He later had a spat with the at-

Esther Anuhya tendant, identified as Nair, who stopped him from entering the compartment. However during investigations, when Kurla GRP cops brought Sanap from Buldhana where he was on a pilgrimage with his family, he had grown a thick beard and sporting a vermilion tikka. “The two staffers failed to recognize him and he too was pretending to be innocent and putting up a helpless act,” another officer said.

for example, the well-known columnist Swapan Das Gupta had his own strong views. He said: “Ever since he was sworn in, Arvind Kejriwal has been looking for the most dramatic exit route – one that would yield him the maximum political advantage, governance was never a priority for Kejriwal when he assumed the chief ministership, thanks to the injudicious Congress dictate from the bachelor boy. He merely wanted to milk a brief tenure for all its grandstanding potential and then move on to new pastures”. Writing in The Hindustan Times (Feb. 21) Rajdeep Sardesai saw Kejriwal in a different light. According to him, Kejriwal and his AAP “have a novelty factor on their side.” Sardesai

tendencies and a sudden eruption of negative reports on AAP in the mainstream English media are indicative of media’s alarm against activism going out of hand. The excessive reliance of AAP on media could mean that the AAP leadership should constantly confront the challenge of being important for corporate media which finds new ways to re-affirm the corruption discourse in its original conception of pre-privatisation politics”. As Udupa sees it, “AAP represents a sentiment that is immensely supported and shaped by the 'mainstream' media.” One of the problems facing the media despite access to many experts in practically every aspect of politics in India is the sheer range of issues that constantly arise and can fox even an otherwise knowledgeable scholar.

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath went on: “Their politics are changing the traditional rules of the game. He has caught national imagination by the sheer audacity of his campaign. For a media that thrives on drama, conflict and controversy, he is a manna from heaven. Television in particular likes leaders who shoot from the hip and Kejriwal in that sense, is made for prime time TRP-driven television. The question is how much of AAP is too much”. To that Sardesai added: “AAP's long-term future will not be decided by television. It will be decided by the willingness to place content above form”. The Economic and Political Weekly (Feb. 15) carried a long article on Decoding the Media Logic. According to The Weekly, “AAP represents a sentiment that is immensely supported and shaped by the mainstream media”. The article authored by Sahana Udupa had some relevant observations to make. Udupa says: “The recent debate on AAP's anarchist

One is reminded of such a situation by Guwahati-based The Sentinel (Feb. 12) which recently drew attention to the existence of a provision that makes it mandatory for the Delhi government to submit all its legislative processes first vetted by the Union government before laws can be enacted. The directive is unconstitutional, as The Sentinel pointed out. It would seem that Kejriwal had protested against such a rule and it appears that Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung has referred the matter to the Law Ministry for a final opinion. To the best of one's knowledge, none else in the media has raised this issue and if the Law Ministry has already promised to withdraw the rule, Kejriwal can surely be praised. What is disturbing is how the earlier government of Sheila Dixit had not protested at an order originally issued as early as 2002 – 12 long years ago. This columnist is not aware of what has happened in the past fortnight or so on this issue but agrees with what The Sentinel says, that “mercifully, there are clear indications that the Ministry of Home Affairs is likely to consider favourably Kejriwal's request. What needs to be stressed on is that the Home Ministry's 2002 order not only goes against the Constitution but is clearly discriminatory in nature.” But how come the order did not come to the attention of the media in the past dozen years? Did it require a Kejriwal to raise the issue so antithetical in nature?

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014

The elections are here! APROPOS 'All set for Lok Sabha polls' (ADC, March 6), the country will go to the polls in a month. The Election Commission does appear to have spent considerable thought on drafting the election time table for the entire country, keeping in mind the threat perceptions in some states. Does not matter if the process is going to take a whole month to complete but it is necessary to safeguard a peaceful poll which the commission has clearly aimed at. As for the ceiling on the election expenditurte, while raising it to Rs.70 lakh is more realistic, it needs to be realised that the political parties have perfected their own ways of spending limitless amounts like organising a huge entertainment programme at great cost but claiming that the whole thing was performed gratis. Similarly, putting up 'winnable' candidates is the only aim of various parties and they do not care whether they have a clean record or not and the EC, which does not have much punitive powers, is obliged only to bear it all. As for the opinion and exit polls, it will be good to ban all of them. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

I welcome the announcement of the Chief Election Commissioner of India for the schedule of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections which will be held in nine phases from April 7 to May 12 with counting on May 16 and the result for the 16th Lok Sabha. Since the current Lok Sabha's tenure is going to end on May 31, the EC has rightly said that the election code of conduct is in force and has banned the exist and poll survey conducted by media agencies and will take strong action against a candidate or party for if found using black money for campaigning. I strongly feel that the recent election rallies addressed by poltical parties have lavishly spent on the election gathering which was indirectly supported by some of the big corporate sectors for their selfish personal gain. As far as the banning of exist and poll survey, it is in right direction as it was observed that some of the TV Channels were openly writing off the ruling party government at the Centre and were behaving like campaigning managers or the agents of the poltical parties to mislead the people of the country with

Money-first-ho

WHERE'S THE MONEY? Arvind Kejriwal recently accused a number of politicians of the Congress and the BJP of corruption, and demanded their accounting details.

Kejriwal's false allegations

THE only clan in the world that has the courage to smile in front of beaming cameras in spite of their wrongdoings are our politicians. Paswan who quit NDA 12 years ago because of the Gujarat riots, has come back to the NDA to strengthen the same man because of whom he had quit. Sadly this is not an isolated case of shameless opportunism. Each election throws new light on the question that there is no ideology but just one aim for every politician – the kursi. The other common factor is manifesto - long time ago it used to spell like that but now its money-first-ho. The sooner the aam aadmi realises it the better it will be for him. He should not blame the party that comes to power for neglecting his needs and problems as the same was conveyed to him via the money-first -ho.

wrong facts and figures. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

THE Lok Sabha elections will start from April 7 but the counting of all votes will take place on May 16. Thus there will be an undesired wide gap of nearly 38 days of the franchise exercised on April 7 and their counting on May 16. Now, the Election Commission should read the following global facts and take the necessary steps to avoid any doubtful results of the general elections. All the European countries including England, California and many other American states have stopped using the EVMs (electronic voting machines) since long because they have found them giving doubtful results of vote counting and returned to the franchise by ballot paper. The EVMs can be easily tampered with, even before or after 24 hours of the actual voting by the ‘necessary’ programming. Because of this reason, Congress ‘won’ the 2009 Lok Sabha election. Besides, the counting of votes of the Himachal Pradesh assembly took place after 42 days of the voting of its latest assembly election in

WAKE UP: INS Sindhuratna recently suffered a fire accident, killing two officers and injuring some, leading to the resignation of Admiral D.K.Joshi. APROPOS 'An unavoidable tragedy' (ADC, March 5), the edit piece very rightly points out the lacunae of the Indian Defence Ministry in the light of this recent submarine accident claiming two budding naval officers for the unabated inaction by the ministry. Long outlived submarines with defective parts not replaced in time, has caused this accident and thereby two officers laid down their lives on board the sub. In fact, Admiral Joshi was so hugely frustrated watching the defiant and inept handling of the ministry for quite some time that

RESIGNATION by Navy Chief Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi on moral grounds brings to mind Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, the Kashmiri hero who captained INS Khukri and went down to his watery grave heroically! Indeed, Navy morals are such that the captains don't abandon their ships. Indeed, Captain Mulla, MVC, made supreme sacrifice by giving his life-saving gear to a rating and thus went down to his watery grave along with 14 dedicated officers and 178 ratings as narrated by a surviving rating epitome of bravery and valour this! Indeed, it's beyond comprehension for us. It goes on to show that he could not think otherwise like an ordinary man so he maintained the most lofty moral of the Navy which may be extinct these days - perhaps never to be perceived again. Captain Edward John Smith of RMS Titanic also went down with his beloved ship Titanic but not until he could save maximum number of people before he went down. Incidentally, if IMS Vikrant is auctioned then Captain Mulla will go down for the second time, for, his name is etched in the hull of Vikrant.

A spoiler and a healer IT makes sense for Raj Thackeray's MNS to not contest the Parliamentary elections and thus help the Narendra Modi-led NDA to come to power at the Centre. The NDA could then reciprocate by helping MNS to take on the Congress-NCP alliance with strategic seat sharing arrangement in the assembly polls which are due in Maharashtra in the later half of the year. Raj has a good equation with Modi and the deal helps both towards their aim of coming to power and thus fulfilling their dream of becoming CM and PM respectively. With Arvind Kejriwal's AAP playing the role of a spoiler and destructor to the two major parties of the country, Raj Thackeray should play the role of a helaer and win the popularity of the voters. Raj is an intelligent politician while Kejriwal believes in media publicity and drama and that could prove to be his downfall!

Pathetic Defence Ministry

— Abdul Monim, Vashi

IT has been noted Arvind Kejriwal has been targetting and accusing top politcian stalwarts like Moily, NAMO, Rahul Gandhi and business tycoons and industrialist like Mukesh Ambani etc. of corruption, black money and huge expenditures and has asked for their accounting etc. It is like a hit and run practice as he has been unable to come out with concrete proof and evidence to prove his allegations and thus adopted holier than thou (BJP and Congress) attitude. At the same time, he has no authority or power to ask for these proofs when he has not given his own account and expenditure which the Home Minister had asked for nor any explanation for his association with Ford and some USA organisations from whom he has been regularly getting funds. He is always silent and does not give justification for himself. Charity starts at home Kejriwal!

employment, seats and vacancies are "reserved" for SC/STs and other "beneficiaries" , anywhere between 70 and 80 per LETTER OF cent . This is atrocious THE DAY since most deserving students and candidates even with percentages as high as above 90 and extremely brilliant academic records are deprived of their seats in the engineering, management and medical colleges and institutes and employment too.

M

others, wives, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, girlfriends... today is a day when you celebrate the special women in your life. It is a day when you give them a break from their daily chores and let them enjoy, celebrate and just relax. What better way to do that than to do the one thing that they've been doing for you everyday — make breakfast. To make it all the more special, get up before they do, whip up breakfast food that they love and serve it to them while they're still in bed. We help you out by getting chefs from across the city to give us simple breakfast in bed recipes that you can surprise your special women with, come tomorrow.

Who doesn't love a smoothie?! Chef Rakhee Vaswani, from Palate Culinary Studio, gives us this recipe that she promises you can whip up in a jiffy: ingredients l 100g papaya l 2 bananas l 1tbsp lime juice l 3tbsp yogurt l 1 apple l 3-4tbsp honey Method l Place the fruits, yogurt, honey and lime juice, in a blender and blend until smooth. l Chill for 30 minutes, then pour into glasses and serve. That didn't take long, did it?

Granola Parfait This recipe is so easy that all you have to do is get the ingredients and just mix them together. LPQ gives us this recipe:

BREAD UPMA A new take on the classic Indian breakfast recipe, we really like the sound of this dish. Puranmal Foods give us this interesting recipe:

nUTTELA fREnCH TOAST

>> Although Eggs Benedict requires a little more skill in the kitchen, it is the ultimate breakfast in bed recipe

Though chef Joshua D'Souza from Silverspoon Gourmet calls it that, we think the name Sweet Desire would have been apt. Regardless, this recipe is sure to be a hit with those who have a big sweet tooth. Ingredients l 1 cup sliced strawberries l 2tsp sugar l Juice of half a lemon l 4 slices of bread (The chef prefers Italian) l ½cup Nutella l 1 large egg l ¾ cup milk l 2tbsp melted butter l 1tsp vanilla l ¼tsp ground cinnamon l ¼tsp salt l Butter (for the pan) l Powdered sugar for serving Method l Combine the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a bowl. Toss to coat and set aside to macerate at room temperature. l Spread desired amount of Nutella over 2 slices of bread. Top each with the remaining

Ingredients l 2-3 pav l 1 tomato, chopped l 1 green chilli, chopped l ½ cup peas l 1tsp cumin seeds l 1tbsp oil l ½ tsp turmeric powder l ½ tsp red chili powder

bread slices. l Heat a large skillet over medium heat. l In a shallow dish or pie plate, whisk together the egg and milk. Whisk in the melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Add 1 tbsp of butter to the heated skillet and swirl to coat. l Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, soaking for 30 to 40 seconds per side. Add the slices to the pan in a single layer, taking care not to crowd the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until light golden brown. Flip and continue cooking an additional 1-2 minutes. Add more butter as needed. l Transfer to a plate, dust with powdered sugar, then top with strawberries. Serve immediately.

SALMOn EggS BEnEDICT Okay, most recipes so far have been those which can be tried by amateurs. However, if you aren't new to the kitchen and want to cook something exciting try executive chef, Sofitel Mumbai, Indrajeet Saha's recipe: Ingredients l English Muffin (can be replaced by bread rolls) l 1 egg l Water for poaching l White wine vinegar: 1 part vinegar to 8 parts Water l 50g Smoked Salmon

Cherry tomato salsa 25g cherry tomato l 5g Italian basil l 1g salt l 10ml extra virgin olive oil l 2gm thyme Hollandaise sauce: l 1 egg l 100ml clarified butter l 2g salt l 5g chives l 10ml lemon juice Method l Cut the English muffin into two and pan fry with a little butter. l Make the water ready with vinegar and salt and poach the egg in it. l Make sure the egg white is cooked and the egg yolk is on the softer side. l Place the smoked salmon on the muffin. l To make the Hollandaise, cook the egg yolk in a little water on a double boiler, whisk it continuously so that it gets a fluffy texture and add a tinge of lemon juice. l Take it off the heat and slowly add clarified butter, till it becomes nice and creamy. l Add chives to the Hollandaise sauce. l Top the egg with Hollandaise sauce and put in a serving place. l Mix the cherry tomatoes, with salt, pepper, basil and olive oil. l Serve as shown in the photo (above). Best served hot. l l

Carefully place the newspaper on the tray, after you have set your meal on it. To make it even better, turn it to the page she likes to read the most so that she doesn't have to fumble with it while balancing a tray. l If you are planning a more leisurely meal, buy some of her favourite magazines and put them alongside the food instead. l Who doesn't love waking up to flowers? Buy your lady a bunch of her favourite ones, trim the ends and put them in a mason jar for a fresh bouquet that won't take up too much space on your tray. l They may not say it, but all women love little, handwritten notes. Take the time to write out one where you tell her how much you love her and what she means to you. You don't need to go all sappy, include cute drawings or funny quotes if you think she'd like that more. This is especially great if you are doing this for your mother — she'd really appreciate a small relevant note or drawing from you. l If you think the newspaper/ magazine route is too mainstream, plan a breakfast sitcom marathon instead. Compile a few episodes from her favourite sitcom and watch them together as she indulges in the breakfast. Great start to the day, we think! l

his Women's Day, head over to catch a performance by an all woman band called InDiva. The event is a celebration that seeks to raise awareness on the importance of access to preventive care information and to empower women, (especially pregnant women and mothers), to make better choices both for themselves as well as for their children. The day is an ideal occasion to bring women together to support such a cause. The band is made up of Merlin D'souza, Hamsika Iyer, Vivienne Pocha and Shruti Bhave and the foursome will be performing a mixture of Hindustani, Carnatic, jazz, classical and world music in order to support the cause. The event is organised by nonprofit organisation, Armman, who are committed to improving the well-being of women and in particular, that of pregnant mothers, newborn babies and children across the country. Dr. Aparna Hegde, founder, chairperson and managing trustee of Armman tells us, “At Armman, we believe that every woman matters. Access to timely information that is crucial to ensure good health for herself and her child is her right. Reaching out to the women directly with preventive care information, when she needs it, can be transformational. It can awaken her to her rights: her right to health care

access, her right to be given equal importance at home and her right to a healthy life for herself and her child.” InDiva added, “We believe in the dignity of womanhood. We play many roles being a daughter, mother and provider and it feels good to be a woman! We need to celebrate each day of it with grace and courage.” Awareness is going to be spread through mMitra, a voice call service which is a free mobile-based health advisory service in the local dialect that provides information on preventive care and during emergencies. This service provides automated calls which are made once or twice a week to women who are enrolled in the programme. The voices are in the dialect that is the local norm of that area. The calls provide guidance, assistance and even companionship to women who have no other form of support and are prepared and vetted by senior gynecologist and paediatricians. Delightful Dining H aving enjoyed my earlier visits to Café Mangii, I was really looking forward to visiting Le Mangii. True to their style, the interiors are done up in dark brown wood, with a central bar acting as the focal point. A high roof gives you great breathing room and the tables are well spaced, so your privacy doesn't get compromised. As mellow music played in the background, we settled into a booth to study the menu. We started off with the Lime & Cucumber Ice Tea (`195) and the Guava & Strawberry Cooler (`225). The Guava Cooler was nothing spectacular, but the ice tea was mildly sweetened, clean and crisp. For appetisers we had Grilled Halloumi wrapped in aubergine carpaccio with paw molasses & beetroot purée (`455) which was divine. The textures paired well, as did the balance of sweet and salty. Next up was the Demerara Flashed Baked Brie with port wine reduction & sweet pepper salad (`455) — I could eat this for breakfast, lunch and

dinner, it was that good! We also tried Crumb-fried Chicken Strips with a spicy salsa (off-menu) that would accompany drinks well. The Pan seared Scallops on a bed of fennel & leek fondue and drizzled with port balsamic reduction (`525) were also a good, light dish. The chef suggested we try the Chevre stuffed Mushrooms with sweet & tangy barbeque sauce (`395) and we are glad we did. They were cheesy and perfectly flavoured. For mains, we tried the Mediterranean Pizza (`585) which we found too salty thanks to the sun-dried tomatoes, brined capers and olives which entirely make up the toppings on this one. The Cajun Chicken pizza (`655) was also average but the Trufalatte Pizza (`975) stole the show. It skips the tomato sauce and has a morel, shitake and porcini mushroom paste instead, topped with meaty chunks of mushroom, chèvre and truffle oil scented rucola. This one made us wonder why anyone would go back to using a tomato paste — ever! Next, we ordered the Spinach & Ricotta Tortellini with mushroom in nutty sage butter (`465), which is an absolute joy. The pasta was cooked to perfection and they didn't skinch on the nutty sage butter — there was enough to coat each tortellini and more to spoon over every bite. Scamorza stuffed Bacon Wrapped Chicken with mushroom ragout (`535) is also a good option for main course. The flavours were mild and the mushroom ragout was good enough to eat just by itself. The bacon was lean as well and it's flavour permeated right through the meat. For dessert, my companion opted for the Grandma’s Apple Crumble with vanilla custard sauce (`225), which I found a little too sweet (I'll blame it on the custard. The pie by itself was a better trade off ). I tried the Mocha Fudge Cake (`245) which was a perfect blend of chocolate and coffee. It was moist and spongy and the perfect end to a great meal. So, if you haven't figured out already, Le Mangii does a stellar job of dishing up some great fine-dining recipes, with warm, attentive and knowledgeable servers to boot, making it a great place to head to for a hearty meal.

Py Bar & Bistro is a new addition to Mahalakshmi's foodscape. Shirley Mistry tells you if it’s worth heading to for a few drinks

peaking of first impressions, Py Bar & Bistro doesn’t give off too many. The ceiling over the bar area is covered in graffiti and coloured lighting, while the rest of the décor is sparse. Plain wooden tables and chairs, a little bar seating and two TV’s playing popular music videos sum up what can be termed as décor at this place. The terms 'bar' and 'bistro' when used together can be quite disorienting for me, but I can understand why Py wants to call itself that. It has an unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere to catch up with friends over a few drinks. My companion and I sampled the Spicy Night (`245) which was a blend of Captain Morgan rum, apple juice and spices. Predominantly spiced with cinnamon, this one was the best of the lot. It was mild and rounded off well. Next, we tried the Melon Ball (`345). My initial preference was a Bloody Mary but unfortunately, they didn’t have any tomato juice. White rum, melon liqueur and pineapple juice make up this drink. Although you can taste the melon, it is rather sweet. The Long Island Ice Tea (`295) was rather

insignificant as well. To accompany the drinks, we had the Lamb Kibbeh (`295) , which was delicious — it was well-spiced and succulent. Next were the Leek & Feta cigars (`295) where we couldn’t find either the leek or the feta — they tasted more like spring rolls (good ones though!). The Chicken Poppers (`245) were bite sized pieces of chicken, batter fried and spiced only with salt and pepper — a great accompaniment to the drinks. We also tried the Provincial Pizza (`385) which was unimaginative in its toppings with the standard olives, jalapenos, red and yellow peppers and feta (we couldn’t find it yet again!). We also had the Chicken Stroganoff which tasted fine but the quality of chicken used was disappointing. For dessert, we tried the Chocolate Hazelnut Torte (`275) which was chocolatey but without any trace of hazelnut. We also tried the Carrot Cheesecake (`295) which was light, fluffy, smooth and perfect. With a few hits and some misses, I’d say it isn’t a bad place to head to once in a while as the service is pleasant and so is the ambience. But, one thing’s for sure, don’t expect world class food.

Sky'S the limit If you consider yourself a party rocker, then don't miss SkyBlu's (from LMFAO) performance on March 9. Glynda Alves gets chatting to SkyBlu to find out more about his Mumbai gig

S

kyler Austen Gordy, better known by his stage name Sky Blu, is an American singer, rapper, producer, DJ and dancer best known as one half of the musical duo LMFAO, with Redfoo (who is also SkyBlu's paternal uncle). They are known for their hit songs Party Rock Anthem, Champagne Showers and Sexy and I Know It. And even though the duo is no longer perform together (they released a statement in 2012 announcing their hiatus) you'll still feel the love. SkyBlu said, “Well, you know, first of all, we're not breaking up. I know that for sure. We're family and stuff, so it's always love.” We catch up with the umm... sexy (and he knows it) musician to find out about this Mumbai gig. Are you excited to be playing in India? I’m a very big fan of Indian culture; from yoga to various other things. I am a big practitioner of meditation and would love to learn more from the masters. I’m excited to be performing in India. I've always wanted to visit India and I am excited to try and find some time to go sightseeing around the country with my promoter, Saurabh Choudhary.

So close... … but not so far. A new initiative lets you enjoy a 360° virtual tour of iconic Indian heritage sites. Dev Goswami tells you more

A

lways wanted to visit the Taj Mahal but never managed to plan a trip? Don't worry as technology is come to cure your travel blues. An initiative between Google, Archaeological Survey of India and the Ministry of Culture, has resulted in you now being able to take virtual tours of monuments and heritage sites across India, all from the comfort of your home. Some of the monuments that will be a part of this include the Taj Mahal, Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort and the Agra Fort. To try this out, all you need to do is open Google maps in your browser (the heavy images mean that doing so on a desktop would result in a better experience, though high-end smart phones shouldn't face any troubles). Then search for the monument you wish to explore (the box on the right lists other major destination), you'll then see a link saying 'See inside.' Click on it and you'll be treated to exterior views, interior views and even a short minute-long clip that will take you through the whole monument. The experience, when we tried it out, was fantastic to say the least. The picture have good resolutions, are sharp and the transitions are smooth and sometimes, awe-inspiring. The best part is that at any particular location, you can use the arrows keys to move your point of view — a truly brilliant experience. Quite obviously, this can't beat actually being there, but till the time you manage to do that, the virtual tour is really something that you should try out.

What can fans expect from the show? Expect to laugh, expect to party, and expect to get touched by somebody! (Note: You’ve been warned!) How did you'll come up with your band name? LMFAO stands for “Laughing My F*****g Ass

I love Queen, Tupac, Red Hot Chili Peppers, James Brown, Prince, Michael Jackson, all of Motown, Bob Marley, Biggie Smalls… just to name a few. Have you listened to any Indian music? I haven’t heard much, but I’m very interested and I would love for you guys to bless me with all the wonderful music your culture has to offer. I will really listen to it and I guarantee it will inspire me to make something great. What's next for Sky Blu? When the lecherous son, Pannalal, of wealthy Ram and Parvati, returns home, he is taken in by Tulsi’s beauty and forces himself upon her, leaving her to commit suicide, but Ram saves her just in time. When Manu finds out that Pannalal is responsible for Tulsi’s state, he goes to plead with Pannalal to marry Tulsi, he scoffs at and humiliates him. Ram, Tulsi, Pyare, their friend, Ram and his U.S. returned wealthy industrialist friend, G.S. Parmeshwaran, then get together and plot against Pannalal - which results in Pannalal getting married to Tulsi; and Ram’s daughter, Geeta, getting married to Manu. Enraged at this deception, Pannalal swears revenge, and takes Tulsi with him to his mistress, Lalita, and asks her to serve her, which Tulsi agrees to do. CVO, 9 p.m.

Nifty At All Time Closing High...

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (March 7, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (March 06, 2014) a net 72.50 points (1.15%) and closed at the 6401 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6344 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 6339 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.49 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6406 points level at 3.10 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 67 points and closed above the psychologically important 6400 points level.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 19.24%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1029 were gainers, 471 were losers and 63 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

a strong market with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5958 points level. The next support is at the 5877 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6372 points level. Was crossed above yesterday. The next resistance is at the 6424 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6382 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6358. Support (2) = 6316. Resistance (1) = 6425. Resistance (2) = 6449. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index af ter having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst i nvestors) has formed a long white body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifte d towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a fur ther upmove unfoldi ng. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

T

he Indian regulator's revised tariff norms for 2014-2019 could weaken the margins of state-owned utilities, in Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' opinion. But the extent of the impact will differ among the three state-owned power companies that we rate in India: NTPC Ltd. (BBB-/Negative/-); NHPC Ltd. (BBB-/Negative/--); and Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd. (BBB-/Negative/--). According to S&P, "While we think that the revised regulatory tariff structure is likely to weaken the operating performances of NTPC, NHPC, and Power Grid, it is unlikely to affect the ratings on these companies," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Rajiv Vishwanathan. "This is because the ratings on these companies incorporate some level of government support, in accordance with our methodology to assess government-related entities." It expects NTPC's EBITDA to decline 10%-12% and net income to

fall under the new tariff structure— all else being equal. However, we anticipate that the EBITDA contribution from new marginal capacity will offset some of the impact of the tariff changes. As a result, we expect minimal change in NTPC's absolute EBITDA in fiscal 2015 (year ending March 31, 2015) compared with our expectation of about Indian rupee 180 billion in fiscal 2014. We forecast that the company's ratio of funds from operations (FFO) to debt will remain 13%-17% in fiscals 2015 and 2016. NTPC's EBITDA and net income will be weaker largely because: (1) the company won't be able to enhance its return on equity as much, given that it will now have to use the 24%-26% effective tax rate from the 33% corporate tax rate that it has been using so far; and (2) incentives will now be based on plant load factor (PLF) from the earlier plant availability factor (PAF). Furthermore, NTPC's ability to earn incentives will depend on buyers' demand scheduling and actual pur-

chase of power, even though the company is compensated for fixed charges based on its PAF. While NTPC's average PLF is higher than the benchmark of 85%, the company may not be able to earn incentives on power plants which operate at a lower PLF. The revised tariff norms are likely to have a smaller impact on NHPC and Power Grid, in our opinion. This is because NHPC and Power Grid currently apply the minimum alternate tax, which is closer to their effective tax rate. In addition, Power Grid will continue to earn incentives linked to plant availability. Nevertheless, the regulator has introduced stricter operational parameters for incentives through higher benchmark PLF for NHPC and higher benchmark PAF for Power Grid. These revisions could reduce the companies' EBITDA by less than 5%. Consequently, we expect the FFO-to-debt ratio for NHPC to remain 17%-21% and for Power Grid to stay 8%-10%.

Mumbai Slips In List Of Most Expensive Rental Accommodation By A Business reporter

M

umbai has slipped to 28th position in the list of world's most expensive locations for high-end rental apartments sought by expats but it still remains the costliest city in India, says a report by HR consultant ECA International. Mumbai was at the 17th position globally last year, but its ranking has fallen to 28th in 2014 list of most expensive locations for high-end threebedroom rental apartments, due to rupee depreciation. Rents for an unfurnished three-bedroom apartment in a sought-after area of Mumbai average USD 3,760 per month (Rs 245,000/month). "Mumbai remains India's most expensive location to rent a highend three bedroom apartment and is the 7th most expensive in Asia," ECAInternational said in a statement. Hong Kong remained the most expensive location in the world despite rents falling for the second consecutive year, followed by Moscow (2nd), Caracas (3rd), New York (4th) and London at the fifth position. ECA is the world's leading provider of knowledge, information and technology for the management and assignment of employees around the world. It publishes annual accommodation reports for more than 180 locations to assist companies in formulating accommodation policy and fix housing allowance for international employees. The ranking is based on data from this reports, which provide comprehensive information for locations worldwide on the rental trends, types of accommodation and districts commonly sought by expatriates. "While rental prices in Mumbai have remained largely static over the past 12 months, a weaker rupee has meant that the cost of renting a 3-bed high end apart-

ment actually fell by about 15 per cent when converted into US dollars for comparison. Mumbai has fallen to 28th spot in the global list – down from last year’s 17th position," ECA said. New Delhi fell in the global ranking from 29th to 43rd spot. While rents in the national capital rose around 4 per cent in local currency over twelve months, the cost of renting a high-end three bed apartment fell 11 per cent in US dollar terms and 20 per cent when converted to Euros. Rental prices in Bangalore are among some of the lowest in the survey.

"Rents in Mumbai are three times higher than Bangalore, despite having risen 5 per cent over the year. The city ranks 127th globally, down from its previous 123rd spot," ECA said. Commenting on the report, ECA International Asia Regional Director Lee Quane said that housing provision for expatriate staff is an expensive, important and often emotive element of the overall remuneration package. "Depending on how companies provide housing or allowances to their expatriates, major currency movements can have a big impact on costs. Companies need to consider this carefully when designing their expatriate housing policy and packages," Quane added. Rental prices were collected in September 2013 and have been converted into US dollars for ease of comparison using the September 2013 exchange rate.

Madhuri: Agile vigilante in ‘Gulab Gang’

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014

The ‘dhak dhak’ girl, Madhuri Dixit Nene, mother of two kids, made a fabulous comeback to tinsel screen with a peppy song in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and her classy Urdu act in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ which was critically appreciated and did fairly well at the box-office too. Now her most impressive role as ‘Rajjo’ in ‘Gulaab Gang’ is set to wow the audiences. We spoke to Madhuri at the press meet of the film at a suburban five star and this is what the dancing diva told us. By Sandeep Hattangadi

What is the genre of ‘Gulaab Gang’? It is a regular masala entertainer but with a message for women that they should be educated and walk hand in hand with the men and should respect themselves first and then educate the boys and men to respect women and imbibe much needed education required for such a mindset. What is your role in the film? I play the leader of a band of women in an ashram who do work like grinding masalas and weaving sarees and I am called Rajjo, their leader who fights against all injustices and atrocities against women and if required uses a ‘danda’ (stick) to fight. All the band members are dressed in pink and hence called ‘Gulaab Gang’.

You are pitted against arch rival Juhi Chawla in this film. Yes. We had a healthy competition running against each other in the 90’s when we both did some very good films. In this film Juhi is playing a negative role and our confrontation scenes are the highlight of the film which I am sure will be liked by the audiences.

What inspired you the most the film? That a woman is all powerful and if she gets educated, she can be independent and stand on her own feet and fight against all odds, as my dialogue in the film says: “Jaise til mein tel, chakmak mein aag, tera sai tujhme hain aur har naari mein aag hai jo jagane ki zaroorat hai aur har naari shashakth hai aur use apni shakti khud mein dhoondna hai.” What do you like about Juhi? She has an altogether different personality. I like her voice and her comic timing. Work-wise we are on the same wavelength and are both disciplined in our work ethics.

Can two contemporary actresses be friends in Hindi film industry? Frankly, I don’t have any friends in the industry. Friends like those with whom I can have a cup of tea and chat are from outside the industry. To make friends in the industry one has to go to parties and I rarely attended parties, whenever I attend some party I quickly wish everyone “hello” and go home. At outdoor shoots it is always work.

Do you consider the film as women-centric? It’s just a coincidence that the two main protagonists in the film are women but our aim is to entertain the audiences and make them like the story and also give a message about women empowerment and women education and that the film doesn’t have a leading man is just another facet of the film.

In his three-decade career, Kher, has been a part of international projects like 'Bend It Like Beckham', 'Bride And Prejudice', 'Conquest, Lust?', 'You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger' and, last year it was "Silver Linings Playbook". In a recent talk with the veteran actor we asked him: “What do Indians do to make it big at the Oscars and get fame and recognition on the international circuit.” Kher replied: “We need to make movies that are original, which come out of our own land, deals with our issues, our problems, our celebrations. However, Hindi films are now in a transition phase and we see that happening. Let us all hope for the best. Having said that it's no easy task to satisfy a worldwide audience. But I am optimistic that we will manage to do that," he added. The workaholic Anupam also finds time to run an acting school called ‘Actor Prepares’.

nupam Kher who celebrates his birthday on March 7, has always been known for his versatility and leaves his mark in whatever he does. Kher made his Bollywood debut in 1982 with the classic 'Saaransh'. He played the role of an elderly man who loses his son and struggles to collect his ashes, to great acclaim. The versatile actor has played negative roles in films like 'Karma', 'Kaash' and 'Hum'. And then went on to do comedy roles in 'Ram Lakhan' and 'Lamhe' and emotional ones in 'Daddy'. He also won accolades for his performance in 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Wednesday', 'Special Chabbis', etc. Kher was also seen in a Hollywood film last year, 'Silver Linings Playbook', where he played a psychiatarist. The film also featured Robert De Niro. “It was primarily my first American film and it won many awards. I feel happy and proud to have been be part of such a film with such a cast. Though my role was small it was an important one."

I am a difficult person to cast: Simi Garewal eteran actress Simi Garewal says she Acting is my first love. I have been getting Vdifficult wants to act in films but feels she is a offers but nothing tempting or attractive to person to cast. captivate me," she said.

Simi, who gave memorable performances in films like 'Do Badan', 'Karz', 'Siddhartha', 'Mera Naam Joker' and others, would love to come back on the silver screen. "I am a difficult person to cast. I don't know what roles filmmakers will be able to offer me. I would love to act in films again.

Any ambition to go into politics? No.

What kind of roles would you like to essay? Roles which have depth and are well written with good dialogues and women oriented films which are the latest trend in Hindi cinema. I feel this is the right time for any female actor to do good films.

We hear you have done your own stunts in the film. Yes. I learnt taekwondo for

that and got injured while doing stunts but even when I performed dances I used to get injured, so it's just an occupational hazard for me. In this film all artistes have done their own stunts.

We hear you have sung a song in the film too. Yes. I sang a small portion of a song in the film.

"There are tremendous changes that have come in the film industry – technology wise, story telling, etc. Diverse films are made today, our films match international standards, there are roles and subjects for everyone, change in background score and music. I am enjoying watching films, said Simi."

Do you find time for your family? Yes. I plan my schedules so that I can devote time to my husband and children and if there is any school related activity I go to their school personally. My family comes first before everything for me.

ith the kind of high-octane spontaneous histrionics that she has displayed in her latest maverick movie ‘Queen’, it's expected to be a ‘crowning glory’ for actress Kangana Ranaut. Interestingly, in a first of its kind, the heroine-centric film, which is being released as a “celluloid tribute to International Women’s Day on March 8 ”, has the stunning Ranaut going ‘solo’ on a honeymoon as her fiancé backs out at the eleventh hour. Undaunted by the fiasco of her previous heroine-centric ethnic movie ‘Rajjo’, the adventurous Kangana is confident that this time she will “unleash a hungama amongst movie-buffs”. Incidentally, a highlight of ‘Queen’ happens to be this racy remix of the retro item-song ‘Hungama Ho Gaya’ from the movie ‘Anhonee’ (1973). Effervescent Kangana is brimming with euphor ia.

“Beyond acting and dancing, I have added 'ek aur' dimension to my calibre. Director Vikas Bahl was gracious enough to allow me to even write my own dialogues and even improvise with my inputs. And it's all so honest and natural,” gushes the actress who recently studied screenplay writing at the New York Film Academy. How would this movie relate to the female audience, considering it’s timed with ‘Women’s Day’ occasion?. “Well, I guess, every young girl and woman will relate to my character and also the crazy twist situations in the movie. When she undergoes a pre-wedding crisis, she

undergoes a gradual transformation and re-discovers her inner strength. Secondly, it has its funny, frivolous moments, as I travel across over 140 different foreign locations in the movie,” insists the National Award winning actress. Wasn’t it an ego trip to be the ‘queen’ on the sets? She counters: “Being a tight-budgeted movie, during shootings, in my ‘de-glam’ looks, was certainly not living life like a ‘royal queen’. Sometimes I even had to change clothes at public restrooms while at foreign locations,” chuckles the curly haired spunky actress who has award-winning actor Rajkumar Rao (of ‘Kai Po Che’) and glam babe Lisa Hayden as her co-stars in ‘Queen’.

t the recent Oscar ceremony—undoubtedly the most watched film event in the world— which truly celebrates excellence in cinema (which is more than what can be said about Bollywood awards), at which even nominees feel blessed, and winners are over the moon, there are always some people who stand out in the crowd of elegantly dressed and coiffed film celebrities. Even though he beat favourite Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been nominated several times, but missed the Oscar, nobody begrudged Matthew McConaghey his best actor trophy. His performance in Dallas Buyers’ Club was a stunning case of reinvention, from pretty boy to actor who transformed himself so completely as to be unrecognisable. Lupita Nyong’o who won the best supporting actress award for 12 Years A Slave, won hearts with her speech (“When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”). and racism spoke about the days she “wished she would wake up lighter skinned.” At the Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon, she said, “I too remember a time when I would turn on the TV and only see pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would

wake up lighter skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself before I was in front of a mirror, because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced just the same disappointment at being just as dark as I had been the day before.” Many

aspirants would identify with those words. But the sneers were reserved for yesteryears’ Hollywood beauty Kim Novak, who made a rare appearance to present the best animated feature award with McConaughey. Media persons noted the startling appearance of the 81-year-old, who had clearly overdone the cosmetic surgery. Mary Elizabeth Williams writing in Salon commented, “Until Sunday night, most of the world thought of Novak primarily as the siren of Hitchcock’s iconic Vertigo, a famously stunning actress whose career peak happened nearly 60 years ago…Her hair was a shoulder length tumble of blond, but it was her face that was the most surprising for a woman of her 81 years. Her eyes seemed pulled back, her lips seemed strangely inflated and her skin seemed at once unnaturally taut and puffy. If you were on Twitter on the time, you could almost hear the collective gasp.” An evening that marked the glory and the tragedy of show business… which is why people wait a whole year for this evening to remember.

agini MMS 2', the forthcoming horror-erotica film, contains a horrorpacked scene shot inside a lake. In fact, there is even a fleeting shot of the said scene in the film’s trailer. It appears at the point when Sunny Leone’s co-star follows her to a lake hoping

to make love to her. The lake was in Vasai on the outskirts of Mumbai, in a scary and quiet location. The said scene had to be shot at midnight when the water was cold, so as to get the desired effect. Sunny had to dip into the water to give her best shot but was petrified because the lake was quite a walk

from her vanity van. There was also talk of water snakes. The scene took an entire night to shoot and Sunny fell ill the following day and developed a minor skin allergy. “'I saw dead fish. The water was dirty”, said Sunny. “I was scared as hell”, she added.

hah Rukh Khan seems to be taking over profitable events in a big way. That SRK is an efficient media manager is also evident from the way in which these events are being designed. The Mirchi Music Awards looked like a Shah Rukh Khan show all the way. On this stage were being played all the songs from his films covering two decades of his cinematic life. Shah Rukh Khan dominated the show completely as the anchor. The same happened at the Zee Apsara Awards. The programmers and the creative team supervised by the Morani Bros have got their job cut out.... every do must be an SRK event all the way.

IRPUR: Skipper Angelo Mathews held his nerve under pressure and led from the front with an unbeaten half-century as Sri Lanka registered a three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the concluding league fixture of the Asia Cup here today. Sri Lanka chased down the 205run target with an over to spare, thereby maintaining there unbeaten streak in the tournament, after Bangladesh opted to bat in the inconsequential match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Having already made the final alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka were in big trouble at eight for three in

the third over, before being reduced to 75 for five at the midway stage by a spirited Bangladesh attack. But Mathews (74) did not panic as he struck seven boundaries and one six en route to his 19th ODI half century, finishing the chase by pulling Arafat Sunny for a boundary. The skipper found a perfect ally in Chaturanga de Silva (44 from 52 balls; 5x4) and the duo stitched 82 brisk runs for the sixth wicket. With four wins from as many matches, the Lankans finished atop the table with 17 points, while Pakistan finished with 13 points. India (9) and Afghanistan (4) ended at third and fourth places, while hosts

Bangladesh finished with the wooden spoon with four defeats. The summit clash will be held here on Saturday. Earlier, Bangladesh frittered away a solid start by their openers to be restricted to 204/9 after Mushfiqur Rahim opted to bat on an uneven looking slow surface.Rookie Priyanjan, with his off-spin, grabbed 2/11 from three overs after Mendis gave the breakthrough with two wickets from one over. Bangladesh’s opening duo had put on 74 runs. Opener Anamul Haque, who scored a century in their record 326 against Pakistan, struck one six and two fours en route to an 86-ball 49.

In the next over, Priyanjan took the prized scalp of Shakib-al-Hasan (20), while the pace duo of Suranga Lakmal (2/32) and Thisara Perera (2/29) tightened the noose in the death overs. In their defence, Bangladesh came out all guns blazing as Al-Amin Hossain dismissed Kusal Perera for a duck in the second ball of Lankan innings, before grabbing the prized scalp of Kumar Sangakkara (2) in his next over. Brief Scores: Bangladesh: 204 for 9 in 50 overs (Anamul Haque 49; Ashan Priyanjan 2/11). Sri Lanka: 208 for seven in 49 overs (Angelo Mathews not out 74, Chaturanga de Silva 44).

Mumbai Customs score impressive win

M

UMBAI: Mumbai Customs came up with a standout performance to hand Maharashtra State Police a 3-1 defeat in an Elite Division match of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) League, played at the Goan Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan, on Thursday evening. The excise outfit showed excellent understanding and coordination to take control of the proceedings. Customs drew first blood in the 20th minute through Mathias Coutinho’s effort and six minutes later added the second when Sagar Bedekar’s shot went in off goalkeeper Moshin Khan’s hand. The spirited policemen fought on gamely and managed to reduce the deficit fired home with a firm volley from the edge of the area in the 69th minute. But Customs made sure of their win as Sajjad Alam struck an insurance third goal in the 85th minute. Earlier, Central Railway were lucky to snatch a point as they held Companeroes Sports Club to a 1-1 draw. Jardin Braganza converted a

penalty for Companeroes in the 19th minute before Central Railway got the equaliser through Rashid Shaikh’s goal in the 64th minute. Referee Siddharth Gade also did Central a big favour by not sending off goalkeeper Pradeep Kumar for an infringement in the 76th minute. Kumar left his area and with his hands blocked Reed Santos’ lobbed attempt, but the referee surprisingly failed to show him the red card. He only flashed the yellow card at the offending player and awarded Companeroes a free-kick. Central Railway were clearly out of sorts and were more on the defensive as compared to their opponents who created the better chances.

Results: Goan Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan – Elite Div: Companeroes SC 1 (Jardin Braganza 19th min – pen) drew with Central Railway 1 (Rashid Shaikh 64th). Mumbai Customs 3 (Mathias Coutinho 20th, Sagar Bedekar 26th, Sajjad Alam 85th) beat MS Police 1 (Vishal Chagule 69th).

Will quit the day I become a burden on team: Afridi

By Tapan Mohanta

M

IRPUR: Hitting out at his critics for questioning his place in the Pakistan team, allrounder Shahid Afridi today said he would quit the game the day he feels himself a burden to his team. “I will sideline myself, the moment I start thinking that I’m becoming a burden on my team. I will not let anyone an opportunity to talk. As long as I’m fit and give my life to cricket, I’ll continue playing the sport,” Afridi told reporters ahead of Pakistan’s Asia Cup summit clash against Sri Lanka here today. “I want to give something to my country with my performance. There is no such thing that you will score runs with the bat every day. I’ve given my focus to bowling as well. I want to get myself ready in such a way that I deliver to the team, be it in batting or bowling,” he said at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Afridi had to face a lot criticism for his inconsistency as many experts back home in Pakistan had questioned his place in the team. The 34-year-old replied at his critics with a 34 not out against India and a 25-ball 59 against Bangladesh to take the defending champions into the Asia Cup final.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014

By Ashok Dhamija

N

AVI MUMBAI: The recent success in the open sea by 14 year old Aditya Bharadwaj, a member of Open Water Sea Swimming Club Of India, from Vashi Jetty to Gateway of India last month only seemed to have boosted to the morale of this youngster as he set his sights on a bigger target. The ninth grade student of Ryan International School, Sanpada Bharadwaj who covered a distance of 25.70 kms in a record time of 5hrs 48 mins 11sec along with three other swimmers from the same club on February 8 achieved yet another milestone in his short swimming career in the open sea, as he completed the 36km stretch from Dharamtar Port near Alibagh to Gateway of India, Mumbai in a time of 7 hrs 24 mins and 43 secs on Wednesday where he was welcomed by officials from the Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association (MSAAA). A trainee at Navi Mumbai Sports Association, Vashi under the watchful eye of his coach Sanket Sawant, Bhardwaj has made his mark as a middle distance swimmer for the last couple of years. His recent transformation as a long distance swimmer and that too in the open sea came about when he started training under Santosh Patil, veteran swimmer in the past six months. “The challenge was to master the tide and use it to our advantage since one had swim over a distance of 36 km. Accordingly we started in the wee hours of the morning of Wednesday at about 2.40 am, when the tide was outbound. It was important to keep Bharadwaj motivated throughout

Aditya Bharadwaj and his coach Sanket Sawant. the route as fatigue sets in after a certain period. To the credit of this youngster, not only did he manage to complete, he managed to finish in a record time for his age group when he reached the finish point at 10.04 am. Delay after a stipulated time would have resulted in him ending up at may be Colaba because the tidal conditions, would have made it difficult to enter Gateway of India harbour” said Sanket Sawant who was part of the support team on a boat that sailed alongside the swimmers. “Swimming in open sea is a different ball game, since one needs to overcome the vagaries of sea and there is no fixed path. Setting under darkness I followed the light on the pilot boat which set the route and had the swimming officials. One of my first challenge came when I had to negotiate huge tidal waves near Karanaja,

Uran but with the vocal support of my well wishers and coaches I managed to overcome the same. The other major challenge was

when I was five kilometres from finish, that’s when the tidal currents changed direction and became opposite to my route, which resulted in reduction of speed. In the end I was more than happy to reach the shore and set my feet on firmy ground after over seven hours on the high sea,” said an elated but exhausted Aditya Bharadwaj, after, completing the mammoth task. But as always he is ready for a new challenge. He added, “The next challenge will be to win a national medal and conquer the English Channel, for which I will train hard”. “We are more than happy that our son has achieved yet another milestone in the open sea. All this would not have been possible but for the support of his coaches Sanket Sawant and Santosh Patil, NMSA, the Swimming officials and of course the management of Ryan Sanpada,” said his parents Sivakumar and Kalyani Bharadwaj.

ARIS: Neymar scored a hattrick as World Cup hosts Brazil routed South Africa 50 while bitter rivals Argentina laboured to a 0-0 draw in Romania with Lionel Messi struggling with illness. On a bumper night of friendly internationals yesterday, just 99 days out from the start of the World Cup, Brazil were too hot for an outclassed South Africa at Soweto's Soccer City, the venue for the 2010 final. Chelsea's Oscar opened the scoring on 10 minutes, Barcelona ace Neymar struck once in the first half and twice in the second, and Manchester City's Fernandinho marked his first start with a goal as well. It was the final warm-up for the 2014 World Cup title favourites before the May announcement of the 23-man squad. South Africa, who stunned world and European champions Spain 1-0 at the same stadium last November but have not qualified for the World Cup in Brazil, were overawed and outclassed. "It was not an easy game. The scoreline does not tell the story. South Africa played well -- they moved the ball well," said Brazil coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari. "The difference was that Brazil have very special players. We are happy with what we saw, but there are one or two things we need to work on, and that will be done at training sessions. The players worked hard for the team and not themselves."

Vijender joins Raja's rebel faction in IABF

NEW DELHI: The rebel faction in the terminated Indian Amateur Boxing Federation today got a massive shot in the arm with Olympic and World Championships bronzemedallist Vijender Singh agreeing to be on the athletes commission proposed by the group led by former Secretary General Brig. (Retd) P K Muralidharan Raja. The rebel group, which claims to have the backing of 23 of the 35 state units on board, is set to approach AIBA after the world body sought applications from "any group of people with passion and love for our sport to submit applications for the establishment of a new National Federation". "When I was approached by Brigadier Raja to be on the athletes commission of his faction, I readily agreed because I have full faith in this group's ability to lead Indian boxing out of this crisis," Vijender said."Indian boxing should have grown by leaps and bounds but instead, we have touched the lowest point, Vijender added.

IN BRIEF Mizoram play TN, Railways face Maharashtra in Santosh Trophy

SILIGURI: High flying Mizoram will look to extend their seven-match winning streak when they take on Tamil Nadu and a buoyant Railways face Maharashtra in the two semifinals of the 68th National Championships for Santosh Trophy at the Kanchenjunga Stadium here today. Mizoram have been the toast of this year's nationals, steamrolling opponents more often than not en route the last-four stage. The North Eastern side has not only won all four of their Final Round matches from Group A but has also shown no mercy on its regional counterparts in the Zonals. Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, have had a roller-coaster ride so far winning two and losing two in the final round. Finishing second in Group A with six points from 4 matches, the two-time finalists will look to exploit the only chink in Mizoram's armour, which has been their inexperience at this level.

Gangjee top Indian at qualifiers

Argentina's Lionel Mess challenges for the ball with Romania's Dragos Grigore during an international friendly soccer game at the National Arena stadium in Bucharest, Romania on Wednesday. In Bucharest, Argentina could only draw 0-0 against Romania in a friendly which saw Neymar's Barcelona teamate Lionel Messi play the whole of the match despite being physically sick seven minutes in. Argentinian coach Alex Sabella started with pretty much his first choice side with Messi in the playmaking role while Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain

were the strikeforce and other regulars such as Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano and Pablo Zabaleta also featured. But the twotime world champions toiled to create any serious openings. In Barcelona, Colombia drew 1-1 with Tunisia as the South Americans' lack of a cutting edge in the absence of knee injury victim Radamel Falcao was exposed. With Los Cafeteros' World Cup

opener against Greece just over three months away, coach Jose Pekerman gave a number of his fringe players the chance to shine as Christian Zapata, Fredy Guarin, J Martinez all were benched. Falcao's Monaco teammate James Rodriguez opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Tunisian keeper Farouk Ben Mustapha had felled Victor Ibarbo after 20 minutes.

Saina in second round, Sindhu out of All England Championship B

IRMINGHAM: Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal emerged as the lone survivor at the USD 400000 All England Championship, thrashing Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour in straight-games to reach the second round even as compatriot P V Sindhu fell by the wayside, here. The 23-year-old notched up an easy 21-15 21-6 win over Gilmour in a women's singles match to bring some smiles back to the Indian camp after men's singles players Parupalli Kashyap, Kidambi Srikanth and mixed doubles pair of Tarun Kona and Ashwini Ponnappa lost in the opening round. World No. 10, Sindhu too found the going tough and her debut at the All England was spoilt by Sun Yu of China in another women's singles match. Sindhu, who held a 2-1 record against Sun before the match, suffered a 16-21 15-21 loss in a 47-minute match at the National Indoor Arena here. Saina was the only bright spot on a dismal day for Indian bad-

minton as she produced a dominating performance to sent Gilmour packing in 32 minutes. She will take on Beiwen Zhang of USA in the second round. The seventh seeded Indian opened up a 3-1 lead early on and then kept increasing the distance

even though Gilmour was breathing down her neck for most of the time but Saina eventually reeled off four straight points from 16-14 to pocket the first game. In the second game, Saina was more dominating as she registered eight straight points to reach 10-2, then had two bursts of four straight points to move to 18-4. She didn't give any chance to Gilmour to make any comeback and closed the door on her comfortably. Saina had beaten Gilmour at the Denmark Open last year. Sindhu, however, had a difficult time against Sun as she lagged behind 5-9 early on and though the Indian clawed back at 12-12 and then at 15-15, the Chinese reeled off five points on the trot to win the opening game. In the second game too, Sun moved to 4-2 initially and then extended the lead to 11-7. Sindhu narrowed down the gap to 12-13 but the Chinese was successful in staving off the challenge from the 18-year-old Indian in the end.

CHONBURI (THAILAND): It was a tough day for Indian hopefuls at the Open Qualifying Series-Thailand as Rahil Gangjee emerged as the best with one-under 71. Gangjee, who was placed tied 15th, is three behind the leader Hiroshi Iwata (68) of Japan at the end of the first round of the 36-hole qualifier. Chiragh Kumar (73) was the second best at tied 28th, while the better-known names Anirban Lahiri, SSP Chowrasia and Himmat Rai had a disappointing outing. Lahiri pulled out after the first round of 74, while Chowrasia carded 78 and Himmat shot 79. Gangjee started in style with back-to-back birdies but gave away a shot on fourth. A birdie on seventh followed by a bogey on eighth meant he turned in one-under. On the back nine, he bogeyed the 16th and birdied the 17th.

Lifter Rahul wins two gold, a silver in Asian Youth Championship

NEW DELHI: Ragala Venkat Rahul opened India's medal account in the 16th Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships by winning two gold and one silver in the boy's 77kg weight category at Bangsaen in Thailand today. Rahul bagged a silver in snatch (133kg) and a gold each in clean and jerk (163kg)and in total lift (296kg). The Championships is the continental qualification event for the 2nd Youth Olympic Games to be held in August in Nanjing, China. On the second day yesterday, Lalu Taku finished fourth in boys' 62kg weight category with efforts of 107kg (snatch), 137kg (clean and jerk) and 244kg (total lift).

Bernie says F1 will not return to India in 2015

NEW DELHI: F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has made a shock statement that the race will "surely" not return to India next year even as the organisers, JPSI, remained optimistic that the Formula One caravan will arrive in the country in 2015. The 2014 race was dropped from the calender due to bureaucratic hurdles even as the official version was that it was scrapped due to logistic reasons.Ecclestone was quoted as saying by media that "at the moment, India won't be on for next year for sure". "Probably 2016... They're gradually getting over all the bureaucracy with the tax position inside the country and the general finance," the 82-year-old was quoted as saying by the 'Guardian'.
