Should the police form a Special Investigation Team to probe Jiah Khan's murder case? Darshan Panchal Engineer Yes. The case in point becomes of utmost importance considering the lapses by the local police. Mohit Lala Bank Employee No. Apart from the local police, the city's elite police wing, Mumbai Crime Branch is also participating in the investigation.

Shivraj Nevrekar Cinematographer No. Forming an SIT in almost all the high profile cases has become a trend, which shows the crime branch in poor light.

t looks like BMC-run hospitals Sion and K.E.M. are not done receiving victims of Sunday's Diva-Sawantwadi passenger train accident. On Tuesday, K.E.M. hospital got two more victims who turned out to be the wife and son of 70-yearold Sakharam Tukaram Gurav who had undergone a major surgery to repair the main artery that supplies blood to the arm. “Both the son and the wife are not seriously injured. The son is as good as normal, while the wife has been admitted and is being treated for minor wounds on her leg,” said Dr. A.K. Gvalani, Acting Dean, K.E.M. hospital. Gurav's wife's name is Sunanda

Sushant Sutar undergoes surgery

28-year-old Sushant Sadashiv Sutar, a victim of the train accident, underwent surgery on Monday evening at the BMC-run KEM hospital. He had a fractured collar bone and a damaged artery. “The main artery that supplies blood to the neck and the upper limb had clotted, so there was no blood. He had to be operated and the artery had to be repaired. If left untreated, gangrene would have set in and his arm would have been affected,” said Dr. A.K. Gvalani, Acting Dean at KEM hospital. Sushant underwent a surgery that went on for about seven hours. It required the expertise of five specialised surgeons. There were three cardio-thoracic surgeons, and two orthopaedic surgeons who operated on Sushant's collar bone. “We have to observe him for two to three days to see it that the blood flow is back to normalcy and also that he does not develop any complications,” said Dr. Gvalani. Sushant is now in the Intensive Care Unit of the cardio-thoracic department.

in the region. Based on a tip-off, the police team nabbed a suspect identified as Jameel Shaikh. After sustained interrogation, Shaikh confessed to the crime and also revealed the names and locations of his three accomplices. The police then arrested Badri Choudhary (20), Deepak Nepali (21) and Govind Gautam (21), and recovered a part of the stolen booty from their possession. The four accused have been remanded to police custody, as the police suspect their involvement in other house breaking cases in and around the region.

Airport cleaner had smuggled more gold before his arrest

nvestigations reveal that Yuvraj Solanki, a cleaner at the Mumbai international airport, who was nabbed while bringing out gold worth Rs.1.04 crore early on Sunday, had also smuggled out the precious yellow metal two days before his arrest. This is the second instance of airport staffers being arrested while bringing out gold hidden inside toilets. This also exposes a possible nexus between corrupt staffers and passengers involved in smuggling without getting caught.“Solanki had brought out 3 kgs on Friday

and 1 kg earlier on Saturday, before that he was caught on his third consecutive attempt on Sunday. He has, however, not been cooperating in the interrogation and is tight-lipped about the identity of the passengers or persons who recruited him,” said an official from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department. Solanki, who is employed with the A2Z Cleaning Services, was held

with gold bars weighing 4,000 grams. Officials are meanwhile planning to take action against the firm, and will recommend that it be blacklisted to the airport operator, GVK. This is apparently the second such case where a staffer from the same company has been caught while bringing out gold, with the first one being on March 1, where Ganpat Shingare was held by the CISF at the Level 1 exit gate of the new terminal T2 with 5 kg of gold valued at Rs.1.29 crore. He was handed over to Customs. Meanwhile, three fresh seizures were made in the in-

tervening nights of Monday and Tuesday, with a cumulative value of Rs.1.12 crore of gold recovered from smugglers. In the first case, a Philippine national Intanbay Gunting, coming on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong, was held with a 1 kg gold bar worth Rs.25.67 lakh. This was followed by Mustafa Moideen Kunhi, who landed from Riyadh and was found in possession of 4 gold bars worth Rs.11.97 lakh. The third case involved a woman, Atifa Zikra Mulki, who too came in on the flight being held with 25 gold bars worth Rs.74.87 lakh.

and his son's name is Pramod. The family had boarded the ill-fated train from Diva and were to get off at Bhilad after visiting their daughter and son-in-law at Vasai. At Sion hospital too admitted a 34-year-old man named Shiva Shinde on Tuesday. He has multiple fractures on his hand. Though not serious, the injury needs the bones to be fixed surgically informed Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean of Sion hospital. While three people were discharged from Sion hospital on Tuesday, K.E.M. and state-run J.J. hospital did not see any discharges. “All the railway accidents victims are stable but not yet discharged,” said Dr. T.P. Lahane, Dean of J.J. hospital. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

r Vidya. N. Acharya (76), who was India's first woman nephrologist passed away at Hinduja hospital on Monday afternoon after battling for her life in the ICU for several days after having undergone an operation for infective endocarditis. But even after the operation, her condition went down hill and she breathed her last at around 3.30 pm on Monday. Her last rites were conducted in Shivaji Park on Tuesday morning which saw the presence of her colleagues and her former students. Dr Acharya, a pioneer in the field of nephrology, is remembered as the one who first introduced dialysis and transplantation facilities in BMC-run KEM hospital at Parel where she was the head of the department. Dr. Acharya who was often respectfully referred to “madam” was known not only for het teaching skills but also for her passion for the field of nephrology. Dr NK Hase, head of the nephrology department at KEM hospital who had known Dr. Acharya since two decades remembered her to be an excellent doctor and said that it was because of her efforts that dialysis was first introduced in Western Maharashtra.

COOLING OFF This May, the sun has already started blazing away from the very early hours of the morning, and the city continues to swelter till well after sunset. Mumbaikars being a resilient lot, have found ways to tackle the temperature, so to speak. Umbrellas are out, not to keep off the rain but the sunshine. A little one is being trained from infancy with an ice-lolly. There are those who hit the beaches hoping to cool off in the waters, man and horse alike. And while one can slake one’s thirst at a cold drink cart or protect one’s head with a small packet, there are those who choose to slumber under a tree amidst all the ongoing romancing around, or seek the enclosed space of a plastic contraption inside a park. Our ace lensman AZAD SHRIVASTAV got us these pictures of a city beating the heat.

Water stocks in dams take a dip By Prashant Hamine

T

he scorching summer is already resulting in steady depletion of water stocks in irrigation dams. Correspondingly, the demand for power in April as against the supply has shown a steady increase. Already with the Weather Bureau forecasting a below average monsoon season this time, the anxiety levels in the state administration are beginning to rise. As per the state government's Irrigation department data for March month end, the water table in all the 2,441 irrigation dams in the state is barely 33 per cent as against 31 per cent in 2012. The available water table in all these irrigation projects is just 37,215 MLD. In the Marathwada region, the water table in 804 projects is just 28 per cent as against 13 per cent in 2012. In Pune region, the water table in 368 dams is just 29 per cent as against 49 per cent in 2012. Elsewhere in the state in Konkan region there is 38 per cent water stock in 158 irrigation projects, in Nagpur region

the water stock is 46 per cent in 366 projects, in Amravati it is 40 per cent in 379 dams and in Nashik it is 32 per cent in 350 projects. While the water stock in all the dams in the state is showing a steady depletion, the demand for power is showing a steady increase. According to Mahavitaran sources, the state witnessed a peak demand of 17,020 MWs on April 14 as against the supply of 16,194 MWs. On April 16, the total demand was of 16,639 MWs as against a supply of 16,196 MWs. While on April 15, the demand for power was 16,936 MWs and the availability of power was 16,082 MWs. Whereas the regular average power supply of the Mahavitaran was 15,500 MWs. Sources disclosed that although 85 per cent of the state is now load-shedding free, the power supply utility has decided to introduce load shedding in urban areas which have more than 42 per cent distribution and commercial losses and in rural areas having more than 45 per cent of distribution and commercial losses.

plication is pending in the court for which the hearing is scheduled on May 16. The three arrested accused have been identified as Rajesh Ukarande (45), Ravindra Gavas (35) and Rajaram Mangale (36). A blow to Salman at retrial

Court proceedings on Tuesday proved to be a setback for Salman Khan when three witnesses identified the actor in the 2002 hit-and-run case as the person behind the wheel at the time of the accident Azad Shrivastav | ADC

T

he Salman Khan hit-andrun retrial had commenced last week with witnesses deposing before the Sessions Court. Sporting a french beard, and dressed in blue jeans and a full-sleeve shirt, Khan sat in the dock on Tuesday, while his two sisters Alvira and Arpita sat on a bench in the jam-packed court room. Three witnesses were deposed to testify and identify if Salman was present at the spot of the accident or not. One of the witnesses told public prosecutor Jagannath Kenjalkar that he saw a big car in the accident, and that he had reached the spot along with the police. He said that the car had rammed into a laundry shop and its bumper had hit the shutter. He saw glass pieces, the number plate of the car and bumper parts lying on the spot. These articles were seized by the police and a panchnama was drawn by him. All the witnesses told judge D.W. Deshpande that they saw the actor getting down from the car. “He was held by the people who were shouting ‘nichey utro’ (get down), but another person, who also got down from the vehicle, said he was a policeman and hence they released the actor who ran from the spot,” they

Police and paparazzi excitedly crowded around Salman Khan’s car outside the Sessions Court in south Mumbai. told the court. One of the witnesses who was deposed had lodged a complaint with the court, claiming that he had received a threatening call a few days back. The court will take up this matter in the next hearing. On March 26, three witnesses failed to turn up as they were either not available or untraceable. Khan faces the charge of running his Toyota Land Cruiser over a group of people sleeping on a footpath outside a bakery in Bandra on September 28, 2002. The

accident killed one and injured four. The case has been dragging on for over a decade and took a twist last year when the magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide was made out against Khan and referred the matter to a Sessions Court, as cases under these offences are tried by a higher court. On December 5 last year, judge D.W. Deshpande, accepting Khan's plea for a retrial after he was charged under Section 304 (2) of the Indian

Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), ordered the retrial on the grounds that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of the aggravated charge. The maximum punishment under this section is 10 years in prison. So far, four witnesses have deposed in the retrial. One among them is a panch witness and the other three are eye witnesses. The prosecution led by Jagannath Kenjralkar will examine three more witnesses on May 19. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Shailesh at Andheri police station, the police informed. According to the police, Salaksar had rung up his brother-in-law Vishnu Parab (71), a resident of suburban Andheri, at 3.30 am on Monday morning claiming that his son had beaten him very badly. “Rattled Salaskar had told Parab that he would be coming to the latter's resi-

dence in Andheri”, police said. “Salaskar took a cab from Thane but lost his conscious while travelling. The cab driver subsequently alerted the police patrolling team which rushed him to Cooper hospital”, police said. The victim died yesterday afternoon while undergoing treatment, police said adding that an FIR was registered

against Shailesh at the Andheri police station. The reason for the argument between the two is not yet clear. The case has been transferred to the concerned police station in Thane for further investigation. After the incident, Shailesh ran away from the house and molested a girl in a market in Rabale. The girl later filed a

complaint at the nearest police station, following which he was arrested under section 354 (molestation) and was released on bail. The police will now arrest him in the murder case. The accused is known to be a habitual drunker and had daily fights with his father over petty issues. He was jobless, the police added.

n a shocking case, a 14year-old girl with her mother's help registered a rape case against her 38-yearold step-father for allegedly raping and sexually assaulting her for the past three years in a middle-class locality in Andheri (West). According to the Juhu police, Sonia's (name changed) mother met the accused on a social networking site, where they became friends. Sonia's mother is from a well-to-do family and was seeking a divorce from her first husband when she met the accused who was a bachelor. In 2008, sometime after she divorced her husband, Sonia's mother tied the knot with the accused and the mother-daughter duo moved in with him in a building in Andheri. Initially, the accused had a decent rapport with the then 12-year-old Sonia, but he started touching her inappropriately since 2010. “At first, she was not in a state of mind to understand the sexual advances but as the molestations continued over a period of three years she realised that her step-father is evil,” said an investigating officer from Juhu. However, she kept quiet.

This emboldened Sonia's step-father who forcefully had intercourse with her on the intervening night of May 3 when her mother was away. He also assaulted Sonia after raping her, threatening her with dire consequences to keep her mouth shut. Sonia got scared but informed her mother when she returned home. She also told her mom about the sexual assault that had been going on for the past three years. Sonia's mom took no time in approaching the police. The Juhu police station has registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 323 (assault) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and under sections 4 (penetrative assault), 8 (sex-

ual assault), 12 (sexual harrasment) of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012. “We have arrested the accused and produced him in court that has remanded him in police custody. The girl's detailed statement will be recorded by a lady officer. The girl's medical test has been done. She is in a stable condition”, said senior police inspector Rajendra Chavan of Juhu police station. “We will take DNA samples of the accused and run him through a medical test. His residence will be searched. He was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of crime. He works for a private company”, added Chavan.

he Amboli police are on a lookout for two men and a woman who, after allegedly spiking a 52-year-old Haryana-based textile businessman’s drink, robbed him of his valuables worth Rs.2.5 lakh when the latter met the accused at a pub based in Andheri (West) on May 2. According to the Amboli police, the victim, Rajesh Bhatia resides in Haryana and often travels to the city on business. The officers said that Bhatia came to Mumbai on April 28 and got a hotel room at Andheri (West). He was travelling in an auto rickshaw on the evening of May 2 when the driver suggested he visit a pub in Andheri (West) if he wanted to have alcohol.

The officers said that at the pub, he met a man called Nikhil and got friendly with him. He then introduced the businessman to another couple, “I was with them for about two hours. During this time, they offered me a drink which I think was spiked”, said Bhatia in his statement to the Amboli police. The police said that the trio then took Bhatia to a road-side food stall in an auto rickshaw. Minutes later, after he lost consciousness, the accused robbed him of the jewellery he was wearing, his two cell phones and Rs.60,000 in cash after which they abandoned him on the road and fled. Bhatia told the police that he was lying unconscious on the road for over a day and approached the police on Sunday morning, after he regained consciousness.

Prabhakar Medhe, senior inspector, Amboli police said, “We have registered a case of theft against the three unidentified accused and are making inquiries. We are also scanning the pub’s CCTV footage to get leads on their identities”. The police said that Bhatia initially told them that the incident happened on May 3, however, he later told the police that it happened on May 2. “Bhatia has given us the descriptions of the couple as well as Nikhil. We are at present trying to trace the accused”, added Medhe. When we contacted the officials of the Pub they said that the businessman was not looted in the pub. They also said that whatever has happened to Bhatia was outside the premises of their pub.

fter a long dragged out session of verdicts, negotiations and appeals, the Campa Cola residents now hope that the BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi will help them save their homes. In the afternoon yesterday, the residents were found performing Aarti to a photos of Narendra Modi. Usha Jain (56), a resident of Campa cola for the last 20 years, said, “We are waiting for May 16 and want for a new government to be formed. Modi is our god. Our hopes are on him as it is very unfortunate that the BMC has not worked out any solution, despite the Supreme Court's suggestion, and though, we on our part, have submitted all relevant documents to show that the homes can be saved.” The residents here are of the view that the civic body has vested interests guiding them to not find a solution to

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner, Mohan Adtani, said, “A tender will be floated by us in a day or two, as the date of demolition is not fixed. Since are expecting the residents themselves to handover their flats to the BMC, the law and order situation can be avoided, as it is mentioned in the undertaking submitted by the residents to the Supreme Court.”

this long pending issue. Jain added, “We are ready to pay the necessary penalty for the extra floor space index (FSI), and are also ready if they demolish that area. But there is no one to support us. We have been cheated.” The young blood of the compound is also worried about their future. They've been telling their parents, if they are trying to find a boy or a girl for their marriage, they need to make sure that they crosscheck the Occupancy Certificate (OC) of that home.

There are, in all, seven buildings in the compound, including the 17 and 20 storey buildings. There are five floors in each building that are illegal. Thirty-five floors and 96 flats will be razed.

Petty mistakes invited the ire of monster couple (who have a four year old son) who brutally assaulted Tahir and even burnt him with a hot knife on several occasions. Unable to bear the torture, Tahir revealed about the ordeal to a neighbour who immediately alerted the Childline Foundation- whose members immediately tipped off the Mira Road police and rescued the child. “Immediately after receiving the information our team swung into action n and arrested the couple who have been charged under the relevant sections of the IPC and under sections 23 and 26 of the Child Labour Act. “ confirmed Senior Police Inspector, Dhanaji Kshirsagar, adding that the child’s parents have been informed and they have left for Mumbai. The child who is left with a fractured arm, did not reveal his ordeal for fear of being punished, told the cops that he was tortured every couple of days over the past one year. While the couple have been remanded to police custody, the child has been sent to the Children’s Home in Bhiwandi.

Ponder awhile… “The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart. The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace.” — Carlos Santana

‘Snoopgate’ as a political weapon O

NLY a proper commission of enquiry can perhaps reveal what 'snoopgate' is all about and who are the culprits involved. What is clear, however, is that it is an objectionable operation conducted by the Gujarat government. Vague details of the operation carried out at the highest government level have emerged. Involved mainly are Amit Shah and also the Chief Minister Narendra Modi. They kept an eye -- it is alleged -- on a mysterious woman and followed her every movement. Why was this done is not known. It is being claimed the woman knew she was closely followed. It has also been stated that her mother wanted that she should be watched. Is it only because the woman's mother wanted to know about her movements, that Amit Shah agreed to have her followed? The 'snoopgate' occurred in December last year. It was a sensational happening. Finally, the Gujarat government appointed a commission of enquiry. The Centre did not show any interest in the matter for the last six months. It has all of a sudden decided to set up a commission of enquiry. It was announced that the commission would be formally formed by May 16th -the day when the poll results would be announced. The big, pertinent question is why did home minister Sushilkumar Shinde announce the setting up of a 'snoopgate' six months after it happened? While campaigning for Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, Priyanka Vadra had referred to the 'snoopgate' perhaps as a political weapon against Narendra Modi. Perhaps the mention of snoopgate in her poll campaign by Mrs. Vadra must have made Shinde announce the commission of enquiry. The allies of the Congress-NCP and NC -- opposed the move and in no time at all an announcement came that the forming of the commission would be postponed. It is evident that an effort was made by the UPA to derive a poll advantage. It is essential that an enquiry should be held to find out whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah with regard to the 'snoopgate' happening.

ELL hath no fury like a Bengali scorned for her art work. Ever since Narendra Modi rubbished Mamata Banerjee’s paintings, saying they weren’t worth the price they fetched, Bengal’s most ferocious tigress just won’t stop roaring at the PM wannabe. And she’s using the kind of vitriolic language that she reserves for the CPI(M). Mr. Modi, you are in trouble if you fall short of numbers and you need to turn to Didi to form the government. As far as she’s concerned, the gloves are off. Modi crossed the line when he mocked her bhadralok cultural aspirations. The Mamata-Modi episode has had an immediate political consequence. Soon after the war of words erupted, Mamata dispatched her Man Friday Mukul Roy to Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi’s political aide Ahmed Patel. Both sides are mum about what transpired but, given the fact that there’s been no communication between them since the election process began, the meeting is a significant development. If at all Mamata was toying with the idea of extending outside support to a Modi-led government, in return for a handsome financial package for West Bengal, it looks like she has changed her mind after Modi’s taunts and jibes. Those who know her say that she has revived her federal front project in a determined bid to stop a Modi-led government at all costs. Obviously, she cannot influence the results of the elections but if it’s a fractured mandate, she will play a furious game with the cards she holds. It is interesting that just the other day, senior CPI leader A.B. Bardhan remarked that Mamata will do anything to stop Modi from becoming PM. Does that include an unspoken understanding with the Left parties for a secular formation? All options are open in an election that promises to throw up surprising results. And although Rahul has refuted suggestions that the Congress will back a third front or federal front government, his party leaders think otherwise with a senior person like A.K. Antony who enjoys the confidence of Sonia Gandhi dropping hints of a Plan B to halt Modi.

Rhythm in every guise is the very nature of man’s whole constitution I

N the Hindu science of music there are five different rhythms which are generally derived from the study of nature: Chatura, the rhythm of four beats, which was invented by Devas or divine men. Tisra, the rhythm of three beats, invented by Rishis or saints. Misra, the rhythm of seven beats, invented by the people. Sankrian, the rhythm of nine beats, invented by the commercial class. Mahadeva, the great Lord of the Yogis, was the dancer of Tandeva Nrutya and his consort Parvati danced the Lassia Nrutya. The traditions of the Hindus have as a most sacred record the mystical legend of Lord Krishna dancing with the Gopis. The story relates how Krishna, the charming youthful Lord of the Hindus, was moving among the dwellings of the cowherds, and every maiden attracted by his beauty and charm asked him to dance with her. He promised every maiden that asked him to dance with him that he would dance with her on the full moon. On the night of the full moon there assembled sixteen hundred Gopis, and the miracle of Krishna was performed when he appeared as a separate Krishna to each Gopi and all of them danced with their beloved Lord at one and the same time. There is a tradition in Islam, where music, dancing, and all amusements and light occu-

pations are strictly prohibited, that on one occasion, it being a holiday, the Prophet called his wife Ayesha to look at the dance and listen to the music of some street musicians. In the meantime his great Khalif happened to come by and was shocked to seeing the Prophet who had prohibited such things himself permitting music in his house. When he stopped the music of the street players,

MATTER & SPIRIT pointing out to them that it was the house of the Prophet, the Prophet requested that they might continue, saying that it was a holiday and that there is no heart that does not move with the motion of rhythm. In the traditions of the Sufis Raqs, the sacred dance of spiritual ecstasy which even now is prevalent among the Sufis of the East, is traced to the time when contemplation of the Creator impressed the wonderful reality of his vision so deeply on the heart of Jelalud-Din Rumi that he became entirely absorbed in the whole and single immanence of nature, and took a rhythmic turn which caused the skirt of his garment to form a circle, and the movements of his hands and neck made a circle; and it is the memory of this moment of vision which is celebrated in the dance of dervishes, Even in the lower creation, among beasts and birds, their joy is al-

ways expressed in dance; a bird like the peacock, when conscious of his beauty and of the beauty of the forest around him, expresses his joy in dance. Dance arouses passion and emotion in all living creatures. In the East, and especially in India where the life of the people for centuries has been based on psychological principles, in the royal processions or at Durbars an impression of kingly grandeur is made upon the minds of people by the beating of drums; and the same beating of drums takes place at wedding ceremonies and at the services in the temples. Sufis, in order to awaken in man that part of his emotional nature which is generally asleep, have a rhythmic practice which sets the whole mechanism of body and mind in rhythm. There exists in all people, either consciously or unconsciously, a tendency toward rhythm. Among European nations the expression of pleasure is shown by the clapping of the hands; a farewell sign is made by the waving of the hand which makes rhythm. All labour and toil, however hard and difficult, is made easy by the power of rhythm in some way or other. This idea opens to the thinker a means for a still deeper study of life. Rhythm in every guise, be it called game, play, amusement, poetry, music or dance, is the very nature of man’s whole constitution. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2014

THIS refers to 'Tragedies galore at hospitals' (ADC, May 6) which gives heart-rending accounts from the hospitalised patients. Most of the accidents so far on the Konkan Railway, particularly the ones involving the Matsyagandha Express, were due to the entrances of the tunnels getting blocked by fallen boulders of rocks. But this time around, it was a massive derailment of the engine and four coaches behind, reminding Ranchi Express derailment in 1962 after the train left Kharagpur in the middle of the night. The Railways need to take the safety aspects more seriously and see that such accidents do not occur. The reason for the tragedy has to be established, whether it was overspeeding by the driver at a bend, rail-fracture or overcrowding of coaches beyond their capacity and should be avoided totally. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE recent train tragedy in the Diwa-Sawantwadi passenger took the lives of 21 people and nearly 100 of them were injured seriously as the train derailed capsizing many bogies of the crowded compartments during the summer vacation season. The callous attitude of the Railways is to be blamed for such tragedies. In the past, we have come across the then Railway Min-

Tragedy on the tracks

ister like Lal Bahadur Shastri owning moral responsibility for a major railway accident and resigned his post immediately. The present generation of ministers are sticking to their seat without shame. By and large such major accidents tend to place the blame on what is called 'human error', implying that almost everything is the fault of the railway staff.

Silly issues

DESPITE making a 1,300-page chargesheet in Sandhya Singh's murder case, the truth is still not coming out. The story goes about more like a desi pulp novel rather than revealing the facts and makes the culprit punishable. Instead of going through vital information connected to the murder, personal details of people who have nothing to do with the case are being touched upon. Thus, there is virtually nothing about the murder, including how or when it happened. So far the only two people with the police are exonerated and given a clean chit. It is more or less a crime thriller we witness in films rather than a real life story. A breakthrough has not been achieved and the trend will continue for some more time without yielding any results.

RECENT editorial by Saamna criticising Gujaratis was completely unwarranted. Shiv Sena's supremo Uddhav Thackeray who distanced himself from the write-up as a dam-

Political game WE probably have had enough of slogan-bazi but nothing seems to be changing on ground. A party screams "Bharat ke mazboot haath" but doesn't have the guts to intervene in the killings in Assam (or at least put up its hand and take the responsibility for its utter helplessness in stopping it even after being in government). One doesn't see much action on ground even afterwards. The other slogan that's been put up every hour is "acche din aayenge" but that too seems far off from the reality when even before the results discrimination has come to fore on the Bangladeshi issue. The BJP's PM-in-waiting is clearly drawing a line between refugees and infiltrators on religious grounds. Will our netas have some shame and stop the blame game and shed a tear or two for those who have sacrificed for ‘their’ cause? — Abdul Monim, Vashi

age control exercise is further damaged by his son Aditya who came in support of the editorial. There is no need to attack any community, sect or religion to show one's concern for their own community. Politics of hatred can only divide and not unite. Gujaratis are fun loving, peaceful and inclusive community who have made Mumbai their home for so many centuries and it's foolish to suspect their loyalty to the state and nation. Shiv Sena instead of doing one up on MNS who is bashing North Indians for political gains, should carve out a sensible and innovative way to pitch them in the next assembly elections. Maharashtra is lacking on development and infrastructure and lot of industries are shifting to Gujarat and Shiv Sena must pitch for the development agenda rather than walk on a beaten path.

This is usually the easiest way out, especially when the passengers are dead and injured in large numbers. But is it the truth, does it provide justice? As the saying goes, truth and justice are distant cousins, and often not on talking terms with each other too. It is likely to be the same situation for the victims of the train tragedy. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

— Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Today's youth want jobs, better living standards and is less interested in who stays where. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai

FIR against Modi unfair THE FIR filed by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch at the behest of the Election Commission for EC code violation on Narendra Modi was unfair as almost all political parties violate some rules or the other and targeting BJP's PM candidate was grossly harsh and personal. Being BJP's PM nominee, Modi himself stands for a ‘lotus’ which is the BJP symbol and the man displaying a ‘lotus’ hardly amounts to persuading voters to vote for him.

RISE UP: The recent editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna' stirred controversy as it took a dig at the Gujarati community residing in Mumbai.

SUNDAY'S derailment of the engine and four coaches of the DiwaSawantwadi passenger express train which left 21 passengers dead and more than 100 injured. The situation has once again brought the Central Railway's recent poor safety record into sharp focus. The derailment which took place between Roha and Nagothane around 140 km from Mumbai at 9.40 a.m., was when nearly half the train was still inside a tunnel. As per sources there is a minor curve soon after the tunnel and there may have some issues with the tracks as more than 150 meters of the track uprooted after the incident and it is most disgraceful that the rescue officials of the railways reached the spot two hours after the mishap. Since the stretch comes under Central Railway route there is only one line and the derailment led to the cancellation of many passenger trains. I strongly feel that due to poor maintenance of the trains, the railway officials are to be blamed for the accident and death of innocent people. It is high time that the railway authorities take this matter seriously and give topmost priority for proper maintenance and upkeep of track and the trains to avoid further accidents.

CALLOUS ATTITUDE: The accident is believed to be the result of a track fracture and thus better maintenance and services are expected from the railways.

GONE are the days when candidates would talk of what they planned to do for the constituents. With the elections almost coming to an end, I am reminded of the campaigning that used to happen earlier. Today, every candidate and every party with no exception is only making slanderous speeches against the opponent. There is only ‘tu-tu mai-mai’. In fact, in the last few days even Rahul Gandhi who had maintained a bit of discipline earlier, entered this slanderous campaign. Further, his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too joined the chorus. What a pity we have such leaders who are likely to govern us. Thus, the 2014 Lok Sabha elections will be remembered as the most slanderous campaign elections in independent India. However, the Election Commission while being pro-active has not gone into the the ‘Moral Code of Conduct’ seriously. I remember earlier when filmstars were candidates there was a ban on serials or movies being shown

Now if Rahul Gandhi raises his hand after voting, would that amount to EC code violation because the hand is the Congress Party's symbol or for that matter a sweeper sweeping with a broom near polling because the broom is the AAP party symbol? The media wanted a quote from Modi, to which he obliged and that hardly amounts to a press conference. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

Pakistan fears Modi AS reported it has been noted that Pakistan fears Modi. Why? The answer is very simple. Pakistan has been at proxy war with India as it knows that it cannot win

India over an open war. It is exporting terrorism, drugs and even fake currency to damage and harm India. Our government headed by Congress party has been very weak and timid and has never taken appropriate retaliatory action or suitable steps to curb it which has encouraged Pakistan and has made its habit permanent. Now if Modi becomes Prime Minister, he would not take mischief and nefarious activities of Pakistan lying down, rather he would initiate strong retaliatory steps which Pakistan is not used to. People at the helm of affairs headed by Congress fear Pakistan's ISI who have information of all hawala accounts and Swiss bank accounts of Congress leaders which they threaten to expose if any action is taken against Pakistan and such transactions have been known to be done in Dubai. Thus, the fear! — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

Apprehensions of T.R. Balu IT was amusing to learn that a former Ministry of Shipping and DMK candidate from Thanjavur, T.R. Balu, was insisting on several procedural compliances during the counting of votes in his constituency this time. The pre-requisites are: (i) at the end of counting of each round the votes polled for each candidate should be recorded and signature of the candidates obtained and (ii) the votes polled by each candidate should also be displayed in a footage for everybody to see. This is aimed at ironing out any ambiguity over the number of votes polled by each candidate and provide transparency. In this connection, it is pertinent to mention that Balu who has moved himself from his constituency Sriperumbudur and contesting from Thanjavur has a battle on the hand as he is not popular over there in the first place and the local candidate Palanimanikkam was ignored by the DMK and his followers have remained passive and not co-ordinating in the aggresive campaign in spite of strict directives from the party high command to work together as a team. — T.M. ow everyone knows Aram for its delicious 'Vada Pav'. But another Maharashtrian delicacy which must be eaten here is 'Missal Pav'. What sets this missal pav apart is the addition of poha to this concoction.

MOVIE REVIEW Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe

The good and the bad of ‘Rio 2’ Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway Director: Carlos Saldanha o if you’ve seen Rio and loved it, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t want to give Rio 2 a dekho. Unfortunately, for diehard fans of Rio, this is a bit of a letdown, as most sequels sadly are. Rio 2 sees an introduction of new characters in the form of Blue’s kids and a shift of location with the family moving to the Amazon jungle to trace back their roots. While the new characters are cute as a whole, the animation flick somehow doesn’t touch your heart or leave you wowed. All in all, not too bad but not too good either!

Graduating from Classes 10 and 12 has us making, what we are made to believe at the time, the decision of a lifetime. Ever so often, we hear that the rest of our lives will evolve based on what we chose to do after finishing high school. Considering the gravity of the situation, and the followingthe-herd mentality that prevails among students and parents, here’s a look at which career is best suited to you.

fatigue. It was a great experience for one and all as such activities are a rare sight in most Mumbai schools due to space constraints.

studied in Mithibai College, Vile Parle and International Association of Trichologists, Australia. I did my LCEH, IAT from Australia. Mithibai had a simple and basic architecture with two floors. But it was the charm of the people, achievements and education which was imparted for generations down the line, that was filled in every corner of the buildings, making the college just so special. Coming from a Gujarati school, on the first day of college, I was very nervous but excited to be a part of the great institution. I was quietly observing and noticing everything around, right from the reception, the long corridors, the big classrooms and the very special science labs. It was a whole new world for me. Thank God I was not ragged even though ragging is certainly an ice-breaking element in the initial days of college, provided it is done in a way which doesn't hurt any one's sentiments, and is done in limits. But it has taken a different meaning today, every youngster reading this should realise their responsibility and respect each other's feelings, sentiments and emotions. Having two grown up college-going kids, I keep guiding them on how to handle such situations, as ragging which today seems to have become an everyday phenomenon. My professors were my Gurus, my mentors and my guiding lights. I was always a serious student who was thirsty for knowledge and wanted to achieve something big in life by bringing in a wave of revolution through my education that would help mankind. My professors played an integral role in it. They guided me, moulded me and taught me not just lessons in college but also lessons of life. I am an individual with an open mind, and hence I was

he board exam results of Classes 10 and 12 are expected to be announced soon. But many students are confused and worried about what lies ahead once they steps out of school or college. Engineering or medicine..? CA or finance..? Advertising or journalism..? In today’s age, there are abundant career options that you can pursue after Classs 10 and 12. However, while making a career decision, students enrol for courses following the herd mentality, taking courses that are most popular, or selecting a course as per their parents' wishes. A majority of the students admit themselves to courses without evaluating their abilities, aptitude or interest. It has been observed that without evaluating their abilities and passion, students have selected engineering, medicine or CA courses due to parental pressure or peer influence. Later they realise that they are not fit for that career.

very receptive to all learnings and was always my professors’ favourite. Exposure to external things was not highly driven at that time. Life was all about studies, family and some family outings. Hence I always had extra time on hand to focus on studies, dedicate more time towards it and also challenged myself to focus. I saw it as a part of life and learning that was fun and not a burden, as I was not multitasking with a dance class, piano and a volleyball match. I travelled to college locally, as it was very convenient in those days. Bus travel was something I would look forward to daily and waiting at the bus stops with hot chai and vada pav outside Mithibai had its own charm. College life was about fun, frolic and studies. We had our favourite eating, meeting, and socialising places. I am not much of a foodie but Mithibai had some great eating joints which are considered the best in Mumbai...Ras Raj’s Paper dosa and cold coffee with ice cream was an all time favourite. I was very selective about making friends so I made few but lifelong friends and I am still very much in touch with them as they are now family – Gira and Neeta. I did not stay in a hostel; I was a home bird with family, always being protected, with my parents. I was very quiet, sober and focused on my studies and goals. College life is not going to come back, hence I spent most of the time with my two friends and enjoyed a lot with them...it was certainly a carefree life although I was a responsible girl. I never misused the freedom given to me. I believe all kids should be honest with their parents and then there shall be no issues of communication

or misunderstanding between them. I strongly believed that knowledge is one of the foundation pillars of success. It is because I was very focused and driven towards my studies and goal that I could become a doctor, the first certified woman trichologist, and create my dream brand Richfeel Hair and Scalp clinics pan-India with my husband Dr. Apoorva Shah. It gives me immense pleasure in seeing and believing that our creation Richfeel is able to change people's life by giving them back their lost confidence, self-image and self-prestige, as hair is the barometer of one's personality. Our education also taught us to be compassionate and passionate about social responsibility and hence we also launched our cancer trust through Richfeel – Mrs. Meenaxiben and Rekha Ben Trust – which treats cancer patients for their hair treatments absolutely free of cost. It is just our simple way to give back to society. Education gives you confidence and vision to create a revolution, which I have done in my life. I am a strong educationist and hence we at Richfeel have initiated a unique course only for doctors in India under international certification from the World Medical Trichologist Association (WMTA) in collaboration with MET. It is a very detailed course, which consists of theory (19 Volumes) and practical training at Richfeel Trichology Clinic; for non-doctors (beauticians, nurses etc.), there is a diploma course consisting of theory as well as two days of practical training. I am what I am today because of my education, and the wonderful professors I had; my sincere thanks to all of them. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

The Sweetest Job! Sharing her life with us is chocolatier Mayavi Khandelwal, proprietor of ‘Maya Confectioners’. For every sweet tooth and cook at heart, here is a career that will fill your life with sweet indulgence, says Naressa Coutinho

M

aster Chocolatier, Mayavi Khandelwal likes to call herself the ‘Chocolate Artisan’ and quite rightly, it is an artisanal craft to master the art of making fine chocolate and confectioneries. Chocolates make the best gifts during seasonal festivities and special occasions. As a child psychotherapist, Mayavi Kandhewal often treated her kids to selfmade chocolates, until her popularity and clientele grew from children to parents, to friends of parents, and friends of friends. Her decade long passion, creativity and adherence to high quality and natural ingredients has been awarded with huge orders from five star hotels and clients based in Dubai, USA, Africa and Europe. Inside a little chocolate room, Mayavi and her chocolate-making elves temper, mould and cool chocolate for the perfect consistency, shine and a pleasing snap. “There are two ways of making chocolate. You could either run down to the store and pick up a slab of chocolate and melt it, and pour it in various moulds, or you could process solid chocolate by tempering it like professionals and chocolatiers do.” The ways of a chocolatier require one to prepare chocolate in a properly air-conditioned room with temperatures between 17 to 22 degrees Celsius. Thus the financial investment required for this career are often directed to tempering machines, a good air conditioner and refrigerator amongst other things like the ingredients, tools, chocolate-making forms and packaging. You will be bowled over by the endless variety of chocolates from sugar free treats, biscotties, sweet chilly bites, brocs (a delectable combination of brownie and chocolate), milk chocolates, naughty nut and

fruit assortments and fillings of apricot, cranberry, praline and more that she makes. Each variation in her chocolate trunk is a result of a secret, tried-and-tested recipe. “Chocolatiers must continuously experiment, invent and reinvent with chocolate. It is an ongoing process that we ensure is followed especially during lean periods in the year when celebrations are at its minimum. This is a good time to work on your packaging, presentation, themes, marketing and hygiene checks,” says Mayavi. Technique matters and students may attend a short course at the Belgium chocolate school called The Chocolate

Academy or the Swisswrap Chocolate Academy. The coursework would teach you everything from tempering, dipping, flavouring, decorating and prestentaion. However, this course won’t immediately land you a job in Lindt, Scharffen Berger or Bovetti. You might want to consider starting on a small scale and create a brand name. Using popular social networking sites and advertising mediums to gain recognition in the industry is great to go about in the digital age. “One must have good business acumen besides the art of chocolate preparation,” she says. For those of you contemplating on whether chocolate making should be a side business or a full-time profession, the chocolate connoisseur believes that it completely depends on one’s passion, ability to balance between jobs and popularity. If you don’t wish to set up a shop of your own, you could always maintain an e-store or use Facebook to introduce new flavours, assortments and offers. Then there is also the option of putting up your chocolates for sale at popular food stores, gift shops, bakeries etc. People instantly drool over the idea of wine tasting and chocolate tasting, so fine-tune your marketing options to gain the quickest set of loyal customers. “If you’re good, the orders will instantly pour in and so will a good income from this profession. One needs to be patient, persistent and innovative and most of all have a love for cooking,” advises Mayavi. You might also need helpers to keep up with huge orders and one should not hesitate to hire because ultimately your success also depends on your ability to deliver on time, especially during peak seasons.

Youngsters today are so occupied with gadgets that utilise so much of their time that they are left with very little or no time to spend with family and friends. It’s not wrong to say that their lives have become more social outside and less social inside. Ummehani Kapasi K.C College

Summer is here and bearing down on us with full force, we ask youngsters how they are beating the heat and keeping their minds and bodies cool despite the harsh rays of the summer sun! I think it is essential to really be careful in this season. You can fall prey to dehydration, infections and various bouts of illness. During this time of the year I make it a point to eat lots of fruits and drink lots of water. I actually eat fruits through the day and this really cools my system and body. I also have multiple glasses of sabja seeds dissolved in the body which is a great cooler for the body. Apart from my diet, I also ensure that I spend as little time as I can under the harsh rays of the sun.

Apart from the heat, which is terrible at this time of the year, I actually do enjoy this season because of all the enjoyable activities I indulge in to keep myself cool. I love swimming, so this is a great time for me take a dip in the pool and cool off. I'm also a major propagator of aloe vera gel and I find this is the best protector from tanning and sun burn. I apply this before I step out and it works wonders. I also drink lots and lots of water, which is absolutely essential at this time of the year.

—Divya S Adventure Sports

I dislike the heat in summer, but I do love the fashion at this time of the year! I love dressing up in shorts and ganji's and tees, and this is completely my style statement for summer. I love dressing up in colourful thin cooling clothes and slippers that keep my feet cool. I love a lot of colour in my wardrobe and my jewellery. Colour and thin comfortable clothes is how I protect myself and keep myself cool.

this. It kept on saving and we kept on forgetting. Even, the earlier generation would calculate large numbers easily, but today we are totally dependent on the calculator. The search for perfection has paralysed our gifted abilities. It’s sad that our routines have become more monotonous, communication is a mere phone call, and feelings have just become status updates. Hence, technology has not only changed our lives for the better but also on the other hand left a drastic impact on it. So take some time off, enjoy nature with close friends in peace instead of just clicking on and on. << Club Enerji, Tata Power's nationwide resource and energy conservation movement has successfully achieved a significant milestone of saving 11.2 million units of electricity by sensitising more than 7 million citizens across 11 locations since its inception and units saved by the Club is equivalent to the amount of energy used to light up 5,266 houses for a year and save 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

ere, we are in the 21st century, a world which cannot imagine survival without its advanced gadgets and utilities. All thanks to the fast paced technological developments, today a phone would take three seconds to make a call or perform a function and it took eight long hours for telephone machinery which existed decades ago to perform the same thing. No doubt, the difference is huge and it has definitely made our lives simpler and better. But let’s give this a second thought. Let us all just imagine ourselves without a cell phone. It’s not wrong if I say that our lives have become more social outside and less social inside. M

utual funds have lost 4% or 16 lakh retail folios over the past six months ended March 2014 marking the sixth consecutive half yearly decline, according to the data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India. Overall, at the end of H2FY14, the industry had 3.95 cr folios (including institutional and high net worth individuals’ folios) compared with 4.13 cr folios held at end of H1FY14. Retail investors continue to exit equity mutual funds. This category saw the maximum decline in the number of retail folios (see table 2) as investors chose to book profit after the recent steep rise in the segment and on expectations of volatility ahead. The equity market benchmark CNX Nifty gained 17% in the past six months ended March 2014, helped by positive domestic and global cues. HNIs too turned away from equities. After rising almost three times in H1FY14, the number of folios held by high net worth individuals or HNIs (individuals investing Rs 5 lakh or more) declined by 5% (or 1.5 lakh) in the second half of FY14 as

the segment chose to book profit. The equity and balanced fund categories together lost nearly 1.8 lakh folios but the overall decline in the segment was offset by an increase in the number of folios in the debt oriented and liquid/money market funds (see table 3). Even Gold ETFs become unattractive and posted their second consecutive half yearly decline in overall folio count. Retail folio count in the category fell by nearly 7% to 4.89 lakh in the period under review compared with a 5% decline in the preceding six months. Volatility in the underlying asset class prompted investors to exit the category. Domestic gold prices (represented by the CRISIL Gold index) fell by over 6% in the past one year ended March 2014. Incidentally, Gilt funds saw the highest decline in folios since March 2010 as they went out of flavour. The category witnessed a 10% decline in overall folio count – the highest since March 2010 – due to on-going uncertainty in interest rate environment amid persistent high inflation. Gilt funds generally benefit in a falling interest rate scenario as bond prices (NAVs) and interest rates are inversely correlated.

In contrast Debt funds continued to see a rise in the number of retail folios. Debt funds have been seeing a rise in investor accounts since March 2009 and H2FY14 was no different. Debt funds added 2.91 lakh retail folios over the past six months, highest since September 2012; they had added 1.79 lakh folios in the six months ended September 2013. As regards assets under management (AUM) a tenure-wise analysis across investor types and categories for the half year ended March 2014 showed that 62% of retail AUM stayed in equity mutual funds for more than two years, lower than 68% seen in the preceding six months. Out of the Rs 1.22 lakh cr of retail investment in equity-oriented mutual funds, Rs 75,403 cr of investment was held for over 24 months. About 51% of HNIs by AUM stayed invested in equity mutual funds for more than two years. Corporates continued to dominate mutual fund AUM; they enjoyed 49% share in March 2014, same as in September 2013. HNIs were the second biggest contributor with 29% share followed by retail investors with 19%.

However, they remain cautious regarding the financial performance at the company level as the corporate sector remains highly leveraged and profit levels remain restrained By A Business Reporter

O

ptimism among “CFOs which witnessed a revival during Q1 2014 continues to remain upbeat during Q2 2014. The findings also reflects that even as the optimism level builds on, CFOs remain cautious regarding the financial performance at the company level as the corporate sector remains highly leveraged and profit levels remain restrained. However, optimism of the CFOs is likely to have gathered strength as the domestic stock markets continue to record new historical highs, rupee demonstrated some resilience and expectations that a new leadership post election could lift the economic prospects builds on. Also, recent project clearances by Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) and Project Monitoring Group (PMG) could have played significant role in boosting optimism level among CFOs. Nonetheless, in order to translate the optimism amongst the corporate into an upturn in the investment cycle, effective and speedy implementation of structural reforms to correct the economic imbalances would be required, says Arvind Raghav, Director, Risk Management Solution, Dun & Bradstreet India (D&B) . He was commenting on the findings of a survey, conducted on optimism regarding the macro economic scenario for the Indian corporate sector during Q2 2014. D&B had conducted a pan India survey of Corporate CFOs in which they were asked about their confidence in the overall financial and macro-economic conditions for Q2 2014 (Apr-Jun of the calendar year 2014), as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The survey reveals how optimistic the CFOs are with respect to the

overall financial health of their respective companies, the business risk environment and the macroeconomic scenario in the country. The Composite CFO Optimism Index for Q2 2014 increased by 13.9% on a q-o-q basis and by 1.9% on a y-o-y basis. The survey reveals that Optimism amongst the CFOs in the services sector remains subdued. While the CFOs are not very optimistic regarding the financial performance at the company level they are however, quite optimistic regarding overall macroeconomic conditions in Q2 2014. Around 44% of the CFOs expect liquidity position of their company to increase and around 45% expect availability of funds in the market to increase. However, around 50% and 48% of the CFOs expect no change in their need for short term and long term funds respectively during Q2 2014. However, CFOs remain cautious regarding the financial performance at the company level as around 54% expect no change in the level of financial risks on company’s balance sheet and around 52% expect no change in the risk appetite during Q2 2014. Optimism regarding the level of financial risks for corporate sector as a whole remains subdued as a considerably lower percentage of the CFOs expressed optimism regarding this indicator. Reducing cost, cash flow management and risk management continue to be the topmost priorities of the CFOs during the next six months. The CFOs surveyed have indicated risk management strategies such as effective recovery system (47% of CFOs) followed by increase in close monitoring of strategic accounts (31% of CFOs) and effective portfolio management (31% of CFOs) to be adopted by them during the next six months.

Urban Poor Have Not Benefited From Government Schemes By A Business Reporter

O

ne of the biggest challenges for the next government will be to resolve problems of the urban poor who have not benefited from poverty alleviation schemes and are reeling under high prices, a senior official said. "The urban poor are the most squeezed section of society due to high inflation rate in the past years. It is a big challenge before any government to deal with the situation. There was a lot of talk on this issue for the past five years but nothing substantial has been done so far," National Statistical Commission Chairman Pronab Sen told PTI. According to Sen, the rural poor were insulated from the impact of

higher commodity prices by schemes such as the employment guarantee programme, which were not available for the poor living in cities. The rural poor have easier access to food grains, vegetables, fruits, poultry and milk at reasonable prices, but those in the urban areas have to pay market prices for them. Sen said due to the rise in prices of agriculture produce, the rural poor benefited and their income went up, while the slowdown in industrial activity caused job losses and income erosion in urban areas. Sen was of the view that wages in cities have not increased in tandem with retail inflation because industry uses WPI inflation for assessing its productivity and profitability.

UMBAI: Riding on skipper Rohit Sharma’s brilliant half century and Kieron Pollard’s 31-ball 43, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive 187 for five against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their IPL match here today. Rohit, who remained unbeaten on a 35-ball 59, combined with the burly West Indian to forge a 60-ball 97-run partnership for the fifth wicket at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohit’s 68-minute innings yielded three fours and four sixes, while Pollard struck six boundaries. Mumbai started well but lost Aussie opener Ben Dunk (15) in the first ball of the fourth over. He shared a 25-run stand with wicketkeeper batsman CM Gautam and had struck a couple of fours against Ashoke Dinda before paying the price for a loose shot that was caught by Yuvraj Singh off Harshal Patel. Mumbai looked in control for a while before losing wickets in quick succession. Ambati Rayudu and Gautam added 46 runs off 29 balls for the second wicket. Gautam departed in the next over. He struck three sixes and two fours in his 28ball 30. Corey Anderson, who hit a six, perished while attempting the same shot two balls later, reducing the hosts to 84 for four in the tenth over.

Pollard’s Starc response M

UMBAI: We have heard of throwing the bat at the ball, and this is something the West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard is very adept at, as he has proved time and again in various editions of the IPL. But what was this? Even a the lanky West Indian MI star Pollard drew away before Aus-

tralian Mitchell Starc could send down a delivery, the Australian still aimed the ball at Pollard, a couple of feet away from the stumps. This infuriated Pollard who in response hurled the willow to the turf in absolute frustration in the 17th over of the Mumbai Indian innings.

Struggling Knight Riders seek revival against Delhi Daredevils By Faisal Kamal

N

EW DELHI: Reeling under four successive defeats, Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to revive their fading fortunes when they lock horns with another struggling outfit, Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League match here tomorrow. The Knight Riders are having a tough run in the tournament, having suffered four back-to-back defeats. Their biggest concern is the floundering batting line-up, which has failed to find consistency even in the Indian leg. Skipper Gautam Gambhir may have found his way out of the initial slump — three consecutive ducks at the start of the tournament — but hasn’t done enough to lead by example. Gambhir’s 54 went in vain on Monday, when a collapse saw hapless KKR losing six wickets for just two runs to slump to 123 for six from 121 for no loss against Rajasthan Royals at Motera. South African veteran Jacques Kallis has been the only batsman to be among runs but his strike-rate has been more of a burden than a boon for the Knights, and that had forced the veteran to opt out of the last match. As far as their bowling is concerned, Knight Riders have been

Delhi Daredevils' bowler Jaidev Unadkat with team bowling coach Eric Simons during a practice session at the Ferozshah Kotla ground in New Delhi on Tuesday. relying too heavily on West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine, who has taken 11 wickets in seven games. It will be interesting to see how KKR’s three wise men — coach Trevor Bayliss, bowling consultant Wasim Akram and motivational guru Mike Horn — prepare the team for the battle ahead. With just two wins in seven games, the Shah Rukh Khanowned team is lying at the fifth spot and desperately need a win to inject some life into their campaign. Delhi Daredevils are also facing

similar situation with Kevin Pietersen-led side having suffered their fifth loss last night following an eight-wicket hammering against Chennai Super Kings. Delhi did well to post 178 against the Super Kings, despite Pietersen getting out for a naught, but their bowlers led by Mohammad Shami failed to defend the competitive total with Dwayne Smith playing a match-winning knock of 79. The match signified lack of self belief on the part of the Delhi players.

Rampaging Chennai lock horns with dominant Punjab C

UTTACK: Revenge would be on top of Chennai Super Kings’ mind when they lock horns with a dominant Kings XI Punjab in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash of the seventh Indian Premier League at the Barabati Stadium, here tomorrow. It was Punjab which had scuttled Chennai’s plans of a flying start in IPL-7 when the Kings XI batsmen chased down a huge total with consummate ease to launch their own campaign in style. However, Chennai have turned into Masters of all ever since that match. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men have won all their six matches after that opening game loss, and are currently at top of the points table. Punjab, too, have steamrolled every team that came their way but their six-match winning streak was snapped by defending champions Mumbai Indians last Saturday with a five-wicket victory. While openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith have butchered all their opposition bowlers to power Chennai to huge scores in the tournament, it has been a Glenn Maxwell show for the Kings XI as the Australian went on to annihilate their rivals. The three are currently grabbing the top positions in the run-scorers list this IPL with Maxwell at the numero uno position, followed by Smith and McCullum and it would be interesting to see who has the

last laugh tomorrow. Besides the trio, Chennai have been served well by a consistent Suresh Raina, while David Miller have chipped in for Punjab whenever there has been a need for the South African. However, Punjab have so far been too depended on Maxwell and Miller to do most of the scoring and though their openers Cheteshwar Pujara and Virender Sehwag have came up with some good stands, they have not been consistent. Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha came up with a sparkling 59 against Mumbai in their last match but he too has to be more consistent. Similarly, skipper George Bailey too have to find his bearing soon. Among the bowlers, pacer Mohit Sharma and spinner Ravindra Jadeja have done most of the damage for Chennai, picking up 12 and 11 wickets, respectively. R Ashwin and Ben Hilfenhaus have also provided good support, snapping up seven wickets each. For Punjab, Sandeep Sharma and Lakshmipathy Balaji have taken bulk of the wickets to keep their opposition in check. Australian Mitchell Johnson, allrounder Rishi Dhawan and spinner Akshar Patel have contributed in the middle overs. However, these statistics would matter little when Punjab bowlers face one of the best batting line with the likes of Dhoni and Faf du Plessis beefing up Chennai’s middle-order.

IN BRIEF Kenneth D’Sena fires hat-trick in KSA’s win over CMRD

EW DELHI: It was Dwayne Smith’s blistering 79-run knock that enabled Chennai Super Kings to chase down a huge 179-run target against Delhi Daredevils, but the modest opening batsman credited Robin Singh for his success, saying that his old mate has helped him become the player he is. “I did a lot of work with Robin Singh and I respect him a lot. Unfortunate he is not with us in Chennai but he has done a lot of work with me and I thank him a lot for what he has done, especially in the sub-continent,” said Smith in the post-match conference. Former Mumbai Indians player Smith enjoys a good rapport with Trinidad and Tobago-born Robin, who was the fielding coach of Mumbai in the previous editions of the IPL and is still a part of the MI team management. The two struck a bond when Robin was coaching Barbados in the Caribbean Premier League and Smith fondly remembered the times. “Once again I would credit Robin for working with me, especially helping me get control of my game. Trying to bowl in good areas and mix up deliveries: Jadeja

N

EW DELHI: Ravindra Jadeja has been consistently performing with the ball for Chennai Super Kings, and the all-rounder says his mantra to success is to bowl in good areas and mix up the deliveries. Stating that a bowler always adjusts according to the given conditions, Jadeja said, “If the ball is turning then that is one way of bowling

tional cricket or any type of cricket you need to score runs. And you can’t score runs just by smashing around. In between you have to work around the singles and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking,” said Smith. Smith’s 51-ball 79, laced with four boundaries and eight sixes

and if there is no turn then it is a different ball game. “I try to bowl dot balls and bowl in the good areas and mix my deliveries. Vary the pace and at times bowl outside the off-stump,” he explained. Jadeja was the most economical bowler with figures of 4-0-23-1 for the Super Kings here last night against Delhi Daredevils, who ended up posting a competitive 178 for five. Although he conceded 13 runs in his second over, the left-arm spinner dismissed Murali Vijay when handed the ball again and bowled a miserly second spell. “After giving away those runs in the second over I was only thinking about not bowling any loose deliveries in my next over. From the end I was bowling it had a shorter boundary,”

helped the MS Dhoni-led side to maintain their supremacy at the top of the IPL table. “I can say that IPL has given me a chance to showcase my opening skills but I actually use to open for my local team in Barbados and that is where I got a chance to play the new ball.”

AIPUR: Controversial former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, who has been living in exile after being slapped with a life ban, was today elected President of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, prompting a livid BCCI to suspend the RCA. Modi predictably swept the polls, winning by an emphatic 24-5 margin after the Supreme Court cleared the decks for the announcement of the election results, more than four months after the acrimonious polls. The result was announced by court-appointed observer Justice (retd) N M Kasliwal here today. The announcement of results is expected to trigger another round of legal tussle between Modi and the BCCI, which has made it clear that it would not accept the verdict. Out of a total 33 votes, Modi’s opponent Rampal Sharma earned just five. Within a couple of hours of the declaration of RCA poll results, the BCCI indefinitely suspended the RCA and decided to form an ad-hoc committee to run the affairs of the affiliated unit.

Rules and Regulations of BCCI, Mr. Shivlal Yadav, Interim President, BCCI, has suspended the Rajasthan Cricket Association from the membership of the BCCI, pending disciplinary proceedings against it on charges of misconduct,” he added. “Keeping in mind the interests of the sport of cricket and in order to safeguard the best interests and welfare of the cricketers playing the game in different agegroups and their future, an adhoc committee will be constituted shortly by the BCCI,” the statement read. The RCA, on its part, vowed to challenge the suspension in court. “We are mulling over the situation and would appeal in the High Court,” said Mehmood Abdi, the newly-elected vicePresident and Modi’s lawyer. “We are governed by the Sports “As per Order dated 30/4/2014 open to it to take action against Act prevailing in the state and it is the Hon’ble Supreme Court had such a person,” BCCI Secretary law of the land whereas BCCI is directed that if it is found by BCCI Sanjay Patel said in a statement. just a registered body. Ex-chief Pawar slams BCCI for suspending RCA J

L

ONDON: Former Board and ICC president Sharad Pawar has slammed the BCCI’s decision to suspend the Rajasthan Cricket Association after banned IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi was declared as the chief of RCA in Jaipur today. “I was shocked to hear about the decision. I think it is a very harsh decision by the BCCI,” the former BCCI president and senior politician told PTI here today. Just hours after Modi was declared the president of the RCA, the BCCI “indefinitely” suspended the state association and appointed an ad-hoc body to run its cricket affairs. “For the sake of one individual to suspend a whole organisation is really shocking. I hope (BCCI’s interim president) Shivlal Yadav will show some spirit in the organisation and respect the views of the judiciary,” added Pawar, who is on a visit to London this week. The RCA elections were conducted in December last year but the results were sealed following a Supreme Court directive. After much deliberation, the result was finally announced by a courtappointed observer today. As expected Modi won by a landslide margin.

AIPUR: Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi today alleged that N Srinivasan was still calling the shots in the BCCI and interim chiefs Sunil Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav were “toeing his line”. Talking to mediapersons, Abdi said that the BCCI has no legal right to suspend RCA because it was governed by the Sports Act of the state. “We had thought that better sense would prevail in BCCI after appointing of Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav by the apex court of India who had also asked N Srinivasan to keep away from the affairs of

BCCI till the enquiry commission submits its findings. But the BCCI is working in same revengeful manner against former IPL commissioner Lalit as before and that is why Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav are toeing line of Srinivasan,” said Abdi. “The newly elected president of RCA has assured the executive via video conference and has authorised us to take all possible legal courses to protect the interests of Rajasthan Cricket. He has appointed me and Sudip Hora in the legal committee to fight the BCCI suspension by moving the court in Jaipur,” he said. “Modi has assured

us that he won’t let BCCI harm the interest of RCA. As regarding the suspension we feel that Sports Act of Rajasthan is a law of land it would prevail over the bylaws of a registered society like BCCI.” Abdi added.
