fter seven months of collecting evidence, doing meticulous legwork, following up forensic details and expert medical opinion, and collecting statements, all of which went towards preparing a charge sheet of nearly 100 pages, a 13 yearold girl, victim in the case, threatens to bring it all to nothing. On October 21, the girl (name with held), stood up in front of the special judge in the Sessions Court and stated that she had not been raped, and in fact, there had been no criminal assault. According to the Vakola police, last April, the13-year-old girl accompanied by her mother, lodged a
complaint with the Vakola police that she had been gang raped by four youths. The four youths and another teenage girl (15) were arrested by the police. They were identified as Venkatesh Naidu (20), Melvin D’Souza (22), Sachin Yadav (22), and Bipin Singh (22). The girl turned approver and was later acquitted by the Juvenile Court. The men were charged under the new stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012. The 15-year-old had was allegedly a conspirator, as she was in relationship with D’Souza when she took the 13-year-old victim supposedly to a party where she was assaulted. This was a fall-out of

Fearing rape, the girl is thought to have promised to bring the younger one for the next gathering, so that they could have their way with her, said the police. The victim along with her mother were sent to the local V.N. Desai hospital, medical tests were conducted and a DNA test and forensic report concluded with positive results. The police finally filed the charge sheet with comprehensive details and the matter was on currently in the Sessions Court. Continued on pg 9 «

What should be Mumbai’s style of bidding adieu to Sachin Tendulkar?
Punit Bhavsar Working professional An awesome win in the Test series is the only way to honour Sachin.
Varsha Ganesh Student A jampacked stadium roaring for India’s victory would be the right way to bid the master blaster adieu.
Amey Jaju Working professional Winning the series is obviously the thing to do but also asking his mother to say a few words about her son’s achievements might be a nice option. Suresh Raja Banker The crowd chanting his name after a terrific win would be the best farewell for Sachin. Mohit Alva Working professional I cannot think of any specific idea, but the style has to be simple and flawless.

f an example of traffic management at its worst is to be highlighted, the road from Metro Cinema along the Anandilal Podar Marg serves as the perfect example. Despite it being a major arterial road, which brings in traffic from over six roads of the Metro Junction, cars are parked in front of the Gol Masjid right in the centre of the road even during peak hours with no fear of them being towed away. Despite the near chaos that prevails every day and the fact that it takes over 10 minutes to travel just across this 500-metre stretch; the traffic police have turned a blind eye to the situation. Incidentally, this entire stretch during the then Joint Commissioner, Traffic, Dr. Pasricha’s days was a ‘No-Stopping, No Parking Zone.’ The reason: Any traffic jam on this stretch would cause traffic jams right up to Crawford Market, CST and up to the end of Fashion Street on one side and right through Marine Lines on the other. Now while a ‘No Parking’ sign stands at the point where the road narrows and a police chowkey stands next to it, no action is taken against the offenders.
If a gate or door in house is in southeast towards east side direction, it also causes court cases. by Dr. Prem Gupta (9820045774/9930318119, www.drpremgupta.com)
Damn the traffic: The cops don’t object to parking right in the middle of this road.
Art in the family By Khushboo Panjabi
R
angoli is an ancient Indian art that is practised in almost every state of the country. On festivals and auspicious occasions, rangoli is drawn with various traditional symbols, shapes and vibrant colours, though with some regional uniqueness and flavour. This year also, Milan Jadhav (50) a resident of Thane had decided to design rangoli for Diwali along with his daughter Mitalee Jadhav (20) and son Mrunmay Jadhav (16). The family is known all over the city for designing rangoli to address or reflect different social issues and to send across a message to the people. Initially, Jadhav used to make rangoli exclusively for an

exhibition in Chembur, but since the last many years, he has been making rangolis at his residence. Jadhav is a production engineer by profession, and Mitalee is doing her last year in BE Electrical, while Mrunmay is in HSC. Jadhav says, “I have been making rangoli since the last 25 years and the art has now chance of being propagated as my daughter and son are doing it and there are a lot of visitors coming home to see admire their work. We preserve the rango-
lis for a week after Diwali is over.” This year Jadhav made the rangoli portraying the famous actor Pran, in a still from his movie Zanjeer along with Manna Dey, who saying the famous song for Pran, ‘Yaari hai imaan..’ Mrunmay, who has been doing his rangoli for the past seven years, has made a design of Hrithik Roshan from Krrish 3, while Mitalee, who has been at it for ten years now, has portrayed the Delhi rape case. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

“Some more exciting visuals for you,” writes contemporary dance wizard Astad Deboo, currently doing a whole lot of shows in South America, “last show in Bogota tonight. The audiences have taken to the performance and then I am taking the boys to a Halloween costume party after the show. Then tomorrow we will be heading for Madrid,” which means, he is already there.
Sunrise boulevard The way Wikipedia makes it sound, Marine Drive is just a “4.3kilometre-long boulevard in South Mumbai in the city of Mumbai. It is a ‘C’-shaped six-lane concrete road along the coast, which is a natural bay. The road links Nariman Point to Babulnath and Malabar Hill. Marine Drive is situated over reclaimed land facing west-southwest. The bay is part of the Arabian Sea. In 2012, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai announced that the entire road would be resurfaced, 72 years after it was originally laid.” In other words, cut and dried. But to us who have lived here for all or the major part of our lives, it is so much more – a place to hang out at any time during the day if you have nowhere else to go. We have seen lovers canoodling under an umbrella in the heat of the noonday sun and in drenching rain, the umbrella the only constant. It is a place that in crowded Mumbai with its matchbox flats and whole families living in single
rooms, gives you a sense of the immensity of space and the hope of a future, with the sea stretching to the horizon and small ships dotting it. It makes you want to run when all you have been doing all your life is walk and stroll and amble. And its broad parapet, edged by concrete tetrapods to protect the severely eroding coastline, just invites risk-taking. Not that there is much risk in walking a balustrade that is in places four feet thick, wide enough to allow two-way pedestrian traffic! And we firmly believe that the wide-openness of marine Drive tempts one to believe that anything is possible, at least in photographs, especially with the sea at your back and the sky arching into the wild blue yonder. Like these girls in the picture, who bring to their pose the freshness, the vitality and the sheer joy of living that is youth personified. And just for the record and also from Wikipedia, did you know that Pic by Anthony Azavedo
On our Marine Drive, the sun always rises on youth and ambition and a chance to pretend that you are other than yourself. So, three young girls strike a pose that amuses and enchants in equal measure, as the rest of the world looks on indulgently.
except for Miami and in the US, Mumbai’s Marine Drive has more art deco buildings along this seafront than any other city in the world? Or perhaps we need to get this little factoid verified!
Interesting twists and turns
It’s intriguing to see the twists that the story of the treatment of Nigerian nationals in Goa is taking. At one point it was a rampaging mob of them on a National Highway, blocking the road, carrying along a murdered compatriot, then using his body to block the movement of vehicles. Drug mafia behavior, the media declared. Next it was officer of the Nigerian consular corp Jacob Nwadadia, quoted saying India had better watch out, there were only 50,000 Nigerians in India and more than 1 million Indians in Nigeria and it could be tit for tat, you chuck out ours and we will chuck out yours or words to that effect. Then the Centre got into the act, wanting an update of the situation in the interests of bi-lateral relations between the two countries. The Centre sounded almost as scared of the Nigerian problem as the police are reported to have been while facing them on the highway in Goa. Only frightened policemen would allow their batons to be snatched and their persons threatened. The thing is, why are they so frightened? Another twist – the murder was carried out by members of the Indian drug mafia in Goa who will be the real beneficiaries if the foreign drug mafias are kicked out. This is because the Indian drug mafia is backed by local politicians, which we find easy to believe. So the police are afraid of the Nigerians, but the Indian drug mafia is not. One man has been arrested and his name does not sound like a Goan name. The present score is – Nigeria 10, India 0. How many Nigerians are there in Goa? Perhaps 3,000, says a local, but only 196 of them have proper documents. That’s a start, surely. For the fear factor
when confronting this particular segment of foreigners is real. In Mumbai’s Mira Road, there were whole buildings rented by them and reportedly the local police was afraid to enter until two years ago when there were raids and they were evicted. According to other reports, they have just moved further north. Do we treat other foreigners like that? Of course not, unless they are Bangladeshis. Are we racist, colour prejudiced? Is the Pope a Catholic?
Do we have a guilt complex about our attitudes? It would seem so. What else would cause the MEA to react so supinely to the truly ridiculous threat made by the consular officer of making one million Indians pay for what he considered was offensiveness to a couple of hundred of his countrymen. And once, just once, how great it would be to feel that our own country valued lives and individuals in the same way.
Meanwhile in Goa… The tourism ministry is patting itself on the back because tourism, particularly domestic tourism, is booming, even during the so-called off seasons, and monsoon packages are doing particularly well. The government of Manohar Parrikar might remember that when we complain that the Russians and the Israelis are treating us badly and not letting us use our own beaches. We particularly liked the reasons trotted out by the minister for the enhanced numbers. More security, he is reported to have said. And beach cleaning machines. The simplicity of their approach is what charms us utterly. It looks like Goa is certainly living up to its label of being the ‘Holiday Capital of India’! According to recent statistics that have been made available to Goa Tourism, the state has witnessed a significant rise in tourist numbers. The statistics available with Goa Tourism (enclosed) indicate that domestic tourist arrival in Goa from January to September 2013 has surpassed all records since 2011. Similarly, the state has also seen a rise in the number of international tourist arrivals. The overall growth rate and footfall in arrival of domestic and international tourists is up by about 10 per cent. This increase in number of
tourist footfalls is in line with the expectations of Goa Tourism. The ongoing marketing and promotion efforts through public relations activities, road shows, campaigns, which include outdoor and social media, undertaken by Goa Tourism both in India and abroad, have started showing results. One of the significant trends that are suggested by these figures is that the concept of Monsoon Tourism is picking up amongst visitors. During the domestic roadshows earlier this year, Goa Tourism had extensively campaigned, created awareness and promoted the experience of visiting Goa during the monsoons. Some of the other highlights were the safety campaign for tourists and residents and the introduction of beach cleaning machines. The Minister of Tourism, Government of Goa, Shri. Dilip Parulekar said, “We are extremely happy to observe the increase in number of tourists to Goa. Goa Tourism’s efforts to develop the tourism industry along with the development of tourism related infrastructure has started to pay dividends. This is a very encouraging sign and it only motivates us to put in more efforts to raise the bar and ensure that Goa is always the destination of choice among domestic and international tourists.”

In 2005, the hostel was temporarily closed declared during which the MAVIM received a notice from the BMC declaring the hostel building dilapidated and advising the MAVIM to reconstruct it. Subsequently, the MAVIM began the process of reconstruction and submitted a proposal to the state PWD. Sena slams BJP, Modi over appeasement of minorities

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013

T
he Shiv Sena in an indirect reference to BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has slammed them for trying to appease the minorities. In an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ here yesterday, the party has come down heavily on attempts to keep aside issues like Ram Mandir and Uniform Civil Code and attempts being made to ensure presence of veiled women at party rallies. In a sarcastic tone, the edi-
torial remarks that everyone these days is in a mad rush to project themselves as socalled secularists. Instead of eradicating, what it called, the sin of the Congress every other political party seems to be engaged in minority appeasement. Terming socalled secularism as poison, the editorial argues that it will one day lead to destruction of the country and its culture The Congress was the first political party to have started the appeasement of minority community in a bid to secure their en-bloc votes. “Now

every other political party is carrying forward the policy ushered in by the Congress. The en-bloc votes of the minorities are the beginning of anarchy and destruction of the country. Not just the Prime Minister, but every other political decision taken is with an eye on securing enbloc votes of the minorities”, it adds further. This is not for the first time that the Sena has publicly voiced its displeasure over what it felt the BJP’s attempts to woo the minority community. During the 2004 and

2009 elections, on several occasions the Sena had warned its saffron alliance against its attempts to win over the minority community. It may be recalled that Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, while extending support to the candidature of Modi, had conditioned that the support was for espousing Hindutva ideology and Ram Mandir. The ‘Saamna’ had also been critical of Modi’s recent remarks that more than the construction of the temple, constructing toilets was need of the hour.

HE IB’s security blueprint for Narendra Modi has bumped the BJP’s prime minister candidate into a special category dubbed as ‘akin’ to SPG protection. ‘Jai ho, Didi’: Mamata’s fortunes on the upswing

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kali Puja acquired a whole new dimension. She of course, fasted the whole day as usual and invited her family, friends and ministers to her tiny abode for the evening prayers. The room was so packed that during the course of the puja, Mamata’s sari accidentally caught fire. Fortunately, it was not serious and the flames were doused quickly. But what ensued was an animated debate on whether this was an auspicious or inauspicious sign from God.
POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath The question was particularly troubling because Mamata faces a slew of crucial elections from next year: the Lok Sabha polls in 2014, the Kolkata city polls in 2015 and then the biggest one – the state assembly elections in 2016. The presiding priest came to the rescue. After much discussion, he pronounced that the fire was an auspicious sign. It had destroyed all evil influences that could come in Mamata’s way and she was now unstoppable. ‘Jai ho, Didi’, exclaimed her relieved ministers. Interestingly, news about the incident seems to have trickled to Delhi. BJP leaders were heard inquiring whether Mamata’s fortunes are on the upswing despite recent controversies.

ANY of the TV programs are mediocre, not worth spending our time, and yet we have to watch, because we want something to cover up the pain, the sorrow and the fear and the anger in us we don't want to come up. That is why we suppress them by consuming. There is some feeling of loneliness, fear, depression inside we don't want and that is why we practice consuming. We pick up newspaper. We open the radio. We turn on our television. We pick up the phone to talk. We take a car to have a drive. We do everything in order not to be — in order to avoid confronting ourselves, our real self, and this is the practice of running away. And what we consume continue to bring the toxins of violence, of fear, of anger into ourselves. And by practicing the embargo, we create a situation of mad circulation of our psyche. We don't allow our mental formation to circulate. We suppress our mental formations. We create a situation of bad circulation in our consciousness and that cause symptoms of depression, of mental illness.
Pollster can’t win either way!
O
PINION pollsters are giving the Congress as well as the BJP sleepless nights. In fact, the latest one conducted by CSDS on the upcoming assembly polls in the four states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Delhi has set the cat among the pigeons in both parties. It predicts a stunning defeat for the Congress in all four places. Predictably, the party is screaming foul and pushing for a ban on opinion polls. Ironically, the BJP too is unhappy. Although the poll predicts a sweeping victory for the saffron party in three states, it suggests that Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party will steal the BJP’s thunder in Delhi. Party circles are understandably upset about the Delhi prediction. Curiously, they have problems with the forecast for MP and Chhattisgarh as well. According to an informed source, they simply don’t believe that they will win as many seats HE BJP appears quite tense about the as the poll has predicted. Their own reports battle in Chhattisgarh despite opinion suggest a tough contest and a much more poll predictions giving Chief Minister modest victory. Looks like pollsters can’t win Raman Singh a high popularity rating and the either way!

party a decisive edge in the upcoming state polls. The exit of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s niece, Karuna Shukla, seems to be pinching particularly hard. Although she is not regarded as a satrap of the Brahmin community in Chhattisgarh, her family connection makes her a valued party leader. According to someone who is in touch with her, Narendra Modi himself telephoned Shukla to persuade her to take back her resignation and stay in the BJP. His efforts to mollify her cut no ice. Atalji’s era in the BJP is over and there is no place for me in the new BJP that is emerging, she is believed to have told him. Shukla has nursed a grouse against Raman Singh ever since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. She believes that he had her defeated. She lost to the only Congress nominee who won from Chhattisgarh, Union minister of state for agriculture, Charan Das Mahant. This time, Raman Singh is believed to have opposed giving her a ticket to fight the assembly elections. Little wonder she feels that there’s no place for her in the BJP.
We know that when the blood does not circulate well in our body, there will be a painful spot in our body. There will be headache, there's pain everywhere. That is why to do exercise, to massage, to help the blood circulate well, it will dissipate these symptoms of illness in our body. The same thing is true with our consciousness. If you block the mental forma-
MATTER & SPIRIT tions you don't like by using consumption, then we create a situation of bad circulation in our psyche and symptoms of mental illness drop here and that is why it is very important to lift embargo, to allow the fear, the pain, the sorrow to come up and you can only do that if you are ready. They are there to recognize, smile, to embrace and transform, but as you begin, your mindfulness is not strong enough and you risk being overwhelmed by the blocks of fear, anger and depression in you. That is why it is
very important to borrow, to rely, on the collective energy of mindfulness of your community. It's much easier to practice in a community than to practice alone. Corrections officials, psychotherapists, teachers, police officers, have to know this. That is why some community building is extremely important. That is the only way out. That is our protection, our support. Do your practice well. If you know how to sit, to be in the community, then the energy of mindfulness and concentration in you will be enough — powerful enough to do the work of recognizing, embracing and bringing relief to the suffering in you. And after having been embraced by mindfulness and get a relief, the energy of fear, of anger, of depression will roll back to the store consciousness and sit again, having lost some of its energy. You can see that after having taken a bath of mindfulness, the energy of anger and depression and fear lose a little bit of its power and, when they come back to their place in the store consciousness as a seed, they are a little bit weaker. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Mars mission: ISRO’s remarkable achievement INDIAN Space Research Organisation (ISRO) of the Department of Space deserves to be congratulated on its successful launch of the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) using our own Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C-25) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 2.38 pm appropriately on Mangalvar (Tuesday), November 5. This marks the culmination of the tremendous efforts put in by several teams of devoted space scientists coordinated extremely well by its chief, Dr. K. Radhakrishnan and India’s first-ever historic interplanetary space odyssey. This MOM launch demonstrates India’s capability in space technology and will invite foreign investment besides contributing to our national growth. Modi is a credible leader FOR Nitish Kumar Narendra Modi is still untouchable. The Bihar chief minister did call up all major BJP leaders to apologise for the security lapse during the Modi’s Hunkar rally. Well, Modi has been put at such a high pedestal not only by his party members but also by a number of eligible voters across the country that Nitish can not think of reaching that place. It is not only Modi’s methodology to attract the people, specially the youth but his proven expertise in governance and Vikas during his tenure as Gujarat’s CM which pulls the crowd. One can not fool today’s urban voters. QUITE often I read the allegations that NaMo is responsible for Gujarat 2002 riots but how do they neglect and forget the killings of thousands of Sikhs after the late PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Ajit Pawar: liability for NCP AJIT Pawar is becoming increasingly a liability in the National Congress Party. His whimsical comments brought disrepute in the past and it continues to hog the limelight in National politics. Ajit was recently trying to convey that the rapist’s genitals should be cut off to make women safer. That it was the only way to impose fear among rapists does not appear to be a solution but a trouble shooting matter for the NCP. Apart from making an adverse comment he went on to gesticulate with a pair of scissors. Now we can understand how our politicians behave in public. Such

Team India’s stylish win IT was a great weekend as India not just beat Australia at Bangaluru but did it in style. The win was all the more important as the hosts had come from a 1-2 deficit to win the series 3-2. Though India won and the team gave the nation a great Diwali gift the series raised a few questions, and that too of a serious nature. When teams score 300+ scores repeatedly and they are successfully chased on more than one occasion there is some serious imbalance. Just imagine what would be the reaction of the audience if even after putting up the highest score of the series and Rohit hitting a double ton India would have lost? However, as of now let’s enjoy the win but pray for better future of the game so that there is a keen contest between bat and ball and the game doesn’t become a one-sided affair. — Abdul Monim, Vashi

The scientists who have conceived planned meticulously and worked diligently to make it successful is highly commendable and a landmark achievement. It is also learnt that the ISRO/DRDO is highly motivated that satellites are being launched from time to time and new avenues are being continuously explored. This also goes to show that huge funds are being spent periodically to promote adventurous astroprojects. Brave men, braver deeds IT goes without saying much that services personnel — serving or retired — are the most courageous men save some black sheep! Indeed, it’s worth recalling the saga of Major General Ian Cardozo who served the nation gallantly and lost one of his limbs, right leg knee downward. When he was wounded, fearing gangrene he asked his ‘batman’ (a brave Gorkha orderly) to
chop off his leg with the bhujali (a perennial weapon for all Gorkhas) even without anaesthesia but seemingly though most obedient, it was a hard task even for the Gorkha. He refused to do it so the General himself cut off his own leg (ADC, Oct 21). History is replete with many such hair-raising stories! Strategy of E-comm firms E-COMM is a good marketing strategy, especially for third and fourth party logistics providers. But, the culture of the people too decides the success of the strategy. E-comm firms have learnt a lesson about their cash-on-delivery strategy in this country. They should make a database of every client which should contain the e-mail addresses, the cell numbers, the postal address and the names of the people who have refused delivery of the consignment. To these individuals delivery should be only against advance payment. In case some of these clients play hooky to out beat

Kashmir’s no issue at all THE whole world should know and note very well and forever that Kashmir is no issue for India at all. It belongs solely to India. The area of Kashmir stolen by Pakistan in 1947 is also the integral part of India only. Consequently, intervention in this so called ‘issue’ by any country of the world is unacceptable to India. De facto, the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) should also be bagged back by India at the earliest because people staying there are also not happy at all with the Pakistani misrule under the pressure of ISI and the Pakistani army. They all also prefer to be governed by the Indian rulers for permanent peace and prosperity. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
US drone attacks in Pak READING the wide coverage of the recent USA drone attack in Pakistan, a few pertinent questions happened to cross my mind: 1 If Pakistan is so angry with the occasional incursions into its territory, then they should, in protest, refuse to accept the billions of dollars in military aid from the superpower. Further, Islamabad may also think of breaking off diplomatic relations with Washington. 2 What right America has got to violate the air space of another sovereign country? If the alleged terrorists are hiding inside the boundaries of a “friendly” nation like Pakistan, then the White House should explore the avenue of diplomatic aggression instead of an armed one. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
BJP resents Cong’s name game THE Congress party has been in power for 56 of India’s independent years. The BJP’s Venkaiah Naidu has drawn up a list of about 450 plus government schemes, projects, fellowships, scholarships, educational institutions, ports, airports, national parks and sanctuaries, sports tournaments, trophies, stadiums, hospitals, national scientific and research institutions named exclusively after three former prime ministers. If it is not Nehru, it is Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi. Any institution which India can be proud of is named after one of the NehruGandhi family. The Congress has not forgotten even the upstart son of Emergency-fame Indira. Mumbai’s
Borivali National Park is India’s pride, a rare piece of forest within an urban area the likes of which are not too many on the earth. What did Sanjay Gandhi do for India to deserve Mumbai’s Borivali National Park to be named after him? Now the Congress is hell bent on naming the new food security scheme after Indira Gandhi. The BJP is right in opposing the proposal. In fact, the civil society should demand a 10/15 years moratorium on any thing being named after Nehru-Gandhi family. After all, every 45 days of the Congress rule some thing or the other has been named after one of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
NO LIMITS: Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu has drawn up a list of 450 government schemes which have been named after members of the Nehru— Dr. Mookhi Amir Ali, Santacruz Gandhi family by the Congress.

You’ll be surprised to know how secretive women can be when it comes to keeping certain truths from men. While some may be unintentional, most aren’t. Priyanka Singh brings you the top 20 secrets from the world of Venus

he moment of epiphany might have first struck writer and philosopher Voltaire in the 18th century when he shared one of his musings about women: “A woman can keep one secret — the secret of her age.” But, it was the movie Titanic that nailed it when actress Gloria Stuart mouthed the line, “A woman’s heart is a deep ocean of secrets.” While most women would whole-heartedly agree with the previous statement, science thinks otherwise. A study that was conducted in 2011 stated that your secret is safe with a woman for only 32 minutes after you spill it to her. 32 minutes is the maximum time a woman can keep a secret. While this one can be a topic of fierce and feisty debates, we’ll save it for some other article perhaps. The veiled catch that one often ignores in this study is that while women might not be able to keep secrets from other women, when it comes to men, women can be as secretive as the creator of the cosmos. To give you a peek into this ocean of secrets, we bring you lesser known secrets that women, more often than not, hide or would like to hide from the men in their lives.

#1 My best friend knows everything My best friend knows it all. She knows all the figures — from the size of my bank account, the number of men I have dated and slept with, who (cough, cough) performed better and of course, other umm, assets. I don’t tell you this because you would get offended about me sharing our personal details with her. But, that’s just how it is. In case you do come across this secret, deal with it because it’s not going to change. Also, if you tell her something about me and expect her to not tell me (even if she says she won’t), she will. She is my confidante first and yours never.
#2 i sleep in your tee when you’re away There’s a reason why your t-shirt smells strongly of my perfume or body lotion when you’re back from a trip. Well, I will hardly ever admit, but when you are gone for long periods of time, I like to sleep in your t-shirt as it has your distinct smell. Continued on pg 14 «

When to spill the beans? While some secrets women will take to their graves, there are some that your partner will find out in time. However, if there are certain secrets that you think spilling will make it easier for him to understand you and make the relationship better, then do it. For example, if your best friend tells him something by mistake that is extremely private between you two, tell him that she knows everything about you and that it is difficult to break a habit you’ve had for years. Assure him that henceforth, you will not discuss some details, if he doesn’t like it.
>> Women have facial hair too and take pains to make it disappear.
#3 i have stalked your ex
#9 i check out your butt
#15 i flirt... sometimes
While I pretend that I couldn’t care less about your exes, I have stalked them. Not literally, but virtually. I know their Facebook status, what events they are attending and I probably know more about how they currently look than you do.
Almost every time you leave the room.
I love you a lot. But, I sometimes flirt with a good looking man just because it makes me feel good and boosts my ego with the fact that I’ve still got it. It’s just that and nothing else, as I never lie to that hunk about my relationship status.
#4 my body isn’t alWays this smooth My body really isn’t naturally this hairless and smooth all over. But, I will never allow you to have any indication whatsoever of all the shaving, tweezing, waxing, exfoliating, and moisturising that gets it this way. At least during our initial dating period. But, when I’m married to you, be realistic and don’t expect the same silky skin all the time.
#5 i knoW about your porn stash I have discovered your porn stash that you have named as ‘office work’ on your laptop. I also know the websites that you are glued to and I think the things that turn you on are hilarious. And a lot of times, disgusting.
#6 you’ve made me cry Obviously I’m not going to admit it because I don’t want to come across as an oversensitive crybaby that most men accuse us women to be. But, it is true; you’ve made me cry more often than you’ll ever know.
#7 i don’t mind a little dirty talk I might get embarrassed, blush until I turn crimson and not respond in the same manner, but I like it when the conversation turns a little kinky.
#8 i saved your messages During the beginning of our relationship, I saved all your messages and re-read them until I almost knew them by heart. Oh, and my close friends have read them too. Just saying. And there are high chances that all those messages were deleted after we had our first massive argument.
#10 i need to knoW that you Want me I need constant indications that you want me around. That’s why it’s better to say, “I want you to come away with me for the weekend. Could you come with me?” than to ask, “What are you up to this weekend?”
#11 i like it When you pay That is, if I’m really interested in you. I might force you to let me pay or go dutch, but if you do go along with what I’m saying, I’ll assume that you aren’t interested in me enough and don’t want to create an impression. You paying for me indicates that you are interested in me. This theory obviously applies to the dating period and honeymoon phase of a relationship.
#12 most of us have bleached facial hair No matter what ethnic background we are from, it is a fact of life that all women have some facial hair. We pluck, wax and bleach our facial hair to stop us from looking like men. Our eyebrows are shaped and we don’t have hair on our upper lips because we undergo threading and take pains to groom ourselves. Even very good looking girls are working every day to keep those stray hairs at bay.
#13 you’ll never knoW the number Most women are not honest with the figure when asked about how many men they have slept with unless the number is zero or very few. The more serious I am about you, the more chances of me lying if the number is high. All this is done to save us from your judgement.
#14 i fart too And, you’ll know this when you actually start living with me. But until then, I’ll never admit that it was me.
#16 that time of the month has its perks Yes, I do use my menstruation cycle to shout at you for seven days and get irritated at the drop of a hat. While doing this, what I really think is that if you do genuinely care for me, you will understand and not react.
#17 i Won’t kiss & tell I might say that the sex was fabulous, but it might have been just about passable. I let it go because I love you too much to point it out. I know that if I call it average, you won’t be able to take in your stride.
#18 my friends knoW before you If I’m going to break up with you, my close friends know two weeks before I actually do it. Read their body language. If they seem to behave in an off manner with you during recent meetings, perhaps you should ask if something is wrong with me.
#19 i look ugly on purpose During the initial days of our relationship, I’ll take pains to look like a dream every time I meet you. But gradually, if I have honestly started liking you, I might turn up dressed shabbily and all worn out. This is done to see your reaction. Will you like me only when I look like a doll or even when I’m bedridden and down with fever?
#20 i compare you to exes Come on! You do the same. But, I’m not stupid enough to say it out loud like you do sometimes. It would be great if you could keep the comparing to yourself as well.
top 5: secrets he might be keeping from you Men are a little less secretive, so their list is predictably much, much smaller. Here are top five secret that he might be keeping from you:
i love sex Well, that’s not really a secret, is it? But, women tend to sideline it once they have been in a long-term relationship. Yes, it’s about sex. Men like sex and men like variety (hopefully not when it comes to people). Men like women who enjoy sex, enjoy variety and are active partners in bed.
i Was checking her out The male brain is hardwired to notice pretty, young women and this has also been proven scientifically. In fact, your partner’s head may turn before his brain realises. Call him out for ogling or flirting, but let him off the hook for the occasional quick glance.
keep quiet sometimes Although you’re perfectly capable of listening to him while you’re relaxing, he can’t multitask as well. But, admitting he needs alone time as you spill your office problem doesn’t seem supportive, so he doesn’t bring it up. Try giving him some space when he comes home.
be a big girl Many women tend to stop taking care of themselves after settling down with their man. Yes, he loves you the way you are, but he also wants you to like how you look and feel.
i have fantasies It might be an innocent one or something raunchy, but many men might keep it to themselves because they don’t know how to communicate it well. Help him by sharing one of your fantasies and eventually you’ll see that the time that he used to spend peering on his laptop for ‘office work’ will decrease.

>> Avani and Manjari enjoy travelling together. Their customised holidays are always offbeat and include surprises for their customers on their travels
Off the beaten path
Sharing a passion for offbeat travel helped 31-year-old Manjari Verma and 30-year-old Avani Patel start their customised holiday planning travel company called Broken Compass. Rhea Dhanbhoora finds out more about this dynamic duo
I
f you’re like us, you’re probably wondering about the same thing when you first read the name of their company. Why broken? Well, it’s called Broken Compass because, as Avani and Manjari tell us that it is when you deviate from a fixed plan or route that you see the real world. We find out more:
Tell us a little bit about how you got started. Manjari: I come from an army background, so my childhood was spent in different parts of India. I dabbled in advertising and freelance travel writing and finally landed up here! Avani: My early years were spent in Gujarat. I moved to the UK, worked as a marine biologist… but after being in a travel adventure company, this was the next best step.
Three Idiots, Pangong Tso Lake was a hotspot. Countries such as Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Jordan and Petra are becoming popular. Within India, rural travel and authentic experiences are popular. People want to experience the place as the locals do. What’s the best trip you’ve organised? We planned a Luxury Campervan USA trip for a high profile client and it was a challenge to plan the trip so they felt comfortable out of their travel zone. They said we would love to do it again which made it worth it. We also planned a holiday to Simlipal National Park in Orissa; local agents had refused to do the trip for them, but we got them a stay inside a forest!
What made you both decide to work together? We met eight years ago as Avani was a friend’s flatmate. Facebook kept us in touch and in 2009, we realised that we shared the same views. So, we decided that instead of becoming competitors, why not start this company together?
Is it easy to work together? Manjari is very good at talking, public relations and research, while I am good at management and accounts. And we both are good at ideating and planning. So, we complement each other well. Yes, there have been disagreements but that’s natural in a new partnership. Over time we have grown to understand each other and now conflicts are resolved with healthy discussions.
Tell us what Broken Compass offers people. We create customised holidays so each holiday is unique. We plan VIP, luxury holidays and have a few domestic group trips a year. By end of the year, we intend to launch Thematic Group Trips as well as International Group trips. We also plan surprises for our guests such as lunch at an organic farm in Scotland or a private barbeque on a Greek island.
What’s on your travel list? Manjari: Before 2014 ends, the Auroras (Northern Lights) and Japan for food and Sakura (Cherry Blossom trees). Avani: Climbing Kilimanjaro and visiting Mongolia, Morocco, Patagonia and the Amazon basin.
Where do Indians love to travel? With all the movies focusing on beautiful locales and countries, theme trips have picked up. After Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, we had two groups of men go on an all boys trip to Spain. After
What would you say is the most overrated travel destination? There are no overrated places in our opinion. Many places are over commercialised or badly packaged but that to us isn’t overrated. Nainital, Shimla, Manali were stunning but unfortunately they have become over commercialised.
There was a study about how people don’t want babies on flight. What’s your take? You can’t avoid or prohibit that. It would be unfair to parents. Yes, it can get annoying for other passengers sometimes, but expecting babies to ‘behave’ on flights is bizarre. What’s your opinion about women travelling alone? We love travelling alone! It’s a great experience. Having said that, one must always be prepared before a solo trip. Especially in places that are notorious for being unsafe. Dress appropriately, ignore negative attention, use public transport and take day group tours. Keep emergency numbers handy and always let someone know of your whereabouts. the girls pick: train or plane? Avani: Trains; you get to meet local people. Manjari: Both! Depending on the place and type of trip. A luxury resort or cheaper hotel? Avani: Since I tend to spend more on activities and food, I prefer neat, cheaper hotels. Manjari: If I am off on a luxurious trip, a luxury resort. But, I dislike big chain hotels. A beach destination or the countryside? Avani: Countryside. I find beaches boring beyond a point. But I like Hawaii and Philippines as there is a lot more to do. Manjari: I am as much of an explorer as I am a beach bum. A secluded destination or tourist hotspot? Secluded destination. Hotspots only if they are must-visits and not too crowded.

« just out! Vita aGe mamma stretch mark cream Vita Age Mamma stretch mark cream has almonds and rice which are believed to keep skin elastic. I have never been a fan of stretch mark creams because the opinions that I have heard from most users have been unanimously negative or average. After my pregnancy, there were thin stretch marks that I had developed around my waist. With zero expectations, I tried a little of Vita Age Mamma stretch mark cream on my marks, twice a day daily, for a period of two months. I am delighted to report that this cream actually works! The smell of the cream is not overpowering which I liked. I thought that the texture would be greasy but to my surprise, it is very light and absorbs quickly. I can’t say if they will work on dark and thick stretch marks, but on thin and light ones, it works like magic. Perhaps this started off as a pretty dress, but it seems that Shibani was so afraid of spilling something on it, she covered herself in plastic cling wrap. That dull, plastic sheen is boggling! However, those sleeves must have been perfect for Halloween.
We love the colour of the pleated skirt and Pallavi’s soft curls that channels old Hollywood glamour. However, those glittery bandage bits just make this otherwise classy getup look tacky. The bling ring is a real showstopper though!

To choose to work with family can be one of the toughest decisions of your professional life. Rhea Dhanbhoora gives you some tips to ensure it doesn’t ruin your next family get-together
Hire rigHt: If you’re the employer, diScuSS tHingS openly: There’s no member, it’s a good idea to have someone in
remember that it’s important to hire people based on merit instead of their personal connection with you. At the end of the day, a job is a job and your company and work will suffer if you make exceptions for family.
Set boundarieS: Make sure that personal relations are left at the door. Of course this doesn’t mean you can’t talk, laugh and joke together — as long as you know where to draw the line when it comes to your working relationship.
need to be ashamed about working with a family member! Let other employees know about the relationship you share and make sure that they see there’s no favouritism. If you’re an employee, follow rules and be the same as you would be in any other job. As an employer, don’t give out extra leave, let them come in late or slack off on their work just because they’re related to you.

ou get along like a house on fire at family dinners and you’re always talking about how nice it would be to spend more time together and then suddenly, you’re in the same office and you don’t know how to deal with it! From jealous, bitchy co-workers who think you’ve got an easy ride to the top, to different work ethics putting a strain on familial relations, working with family is a hassle not all of us are willing to go through. But, if you’ve got no choice or really want the job, these tips might be able to help you out:

between so you’re not working directly with them on a daily basis. This will make it easier not to let personal relations colour your work.
tHink it over: Don’t just join daddy’s company, or jump on to your sister’s new business project. Think about what comes with it — how you’ll talk to them if you want to quit, need a raise, want to move on to further your career… if you’re alright with discussing these things with them in the future and know you won’t end up getting stuck here, go ahead!
reSpect eacH otHer: You can’t fight with your brother at work and you can’t go running to daddy every time something goes wrong. Remember to treat them with the same degree of respect and professionalism as you would another colleague.
don’t blur tHingS: Don’t confuse their relationship with you with their working relationship. They could be amazing husbands, fun cousins and loving parents but an absolute nightmare on the job! Sometimes two people just don’t gel well and cannot work together. Be prepared for an event like that and don’t blame the other person or try to manipulate them with your personal relationship. Move on if you want to save your family life.
keep it at work: We know how easy it is to go home and talk about work, but when you’re working with people you live with, too much is a bad thing. Talk about other things at home so that you can focus on just work when you’re at the job. Talking about a project at home and discussing a family issue at work is probably not a good idea.
keep it formal: Make sure there’s a contract, letter of employment, set salary and proper job description or things could get messy. And, if your family member isn’t doing a good enough job, don’t hold yourself back from giving them the boot.

find out to deal witH a Hanger-on friend-colleague One of my close friends has recently joined my company. She works in the same department as me and depends on me to show her the ways of our office. While I was okay with it at the beginning, it’s becoming a problem now. It’s been a month since she’s been here but she still keeps coming to me for every doubt she has. Also, she’s quite a recluse and many times I’ve had to chose doing nothing at all with her over an after-work coffee with colleagues. How do I get this to stop? — Sanjana khurrana, andheri dear Sanjana, One of the best and most subtle ways you can get her to stop latching on to you is by introducing her to a colleague who can help her out with all office tasks. It might look a bit fishy since you are her friend, so you can say something like, ‘When I’m busy, you can talk to him/her.’ As far as her being a recluse is concerned, force her to come along with you a couple of times. Maybe she’ll have fun and won’t avoid hanging out with colleagues. But, if she doesn’t, then no matter how close a friend, go ahead and make your plans. We’re sure she’ll get the hint.
I have a co-worker who seems to think she’s the best fashion expert in the world. However, her ‘expertise’ only comes out on me. She keeps criticizing everything I wear with subtle statements such as ‘Oh! Did you dress up in a hurry? Your outfit doesn’t seem to match.’ It is needless, pointless and quite annoying. How do I deal with her? — alita Sawn, matunga dear alita, Ignore, ignore and ignore! That is the best way to deal with such people. Women like her thrive on seeing you distressed or annoyed, and so the more you let her see that her statements affect you, the more she’ll keep commenting. If you start ignoring her, sooner or later she’ll stop because she’ll see that no one is paying any attention to her. If worse comes to worst, you can do what is popularly known as ‘creating a scene.’ Just go up to her and tell her that her comments on your fashion sense or outfits are not appreciated. Don’t go overboard, but make sure your sentiments reach out to her. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday

pooh-poohs! India is a land of many myths. So, how could pregnancy remain untouched? Priyanka Singh brings you a list of some of the most common pseudo-prophecies which are nothing more than myths

rom ‘Keep it a secret’ to ‘Eat a lot of ghee’ — if you are or have been pregnant, you must have heard it all! In fact, if you type Indian myths in the Google search tab, the fourth option that appears is ‘Indian myths about pregnancy.’ Don’t get paranoid by the barrage of absurd advice because most of it is illogical and irrational. We pull out some rampant ones that are completely baseless, but will be popped up by every second auntyjee in your vicinity.
a gloWing FaCe means… Every other person will scrutinise your face for a few seconds and will make an effort to end your ‘dilemma.’ If your face glows, it’s a girl; if not, then it’s a boy. In India, it is illegal to find out the sex of your baby beforehand, hence, the popularity of this myth. Pregnant women produce 50% more blood, resulting in more blood circulation, which leads to this glow. It’s got nothing to do with the sex of the baby.
aCne says it’s a girl!
>> Make sure that your body, lifestyle and mental state are well-prepared for pregnancy
This one proves that the first point is hogwash. If you have acne erupting on your face during pregnancy, then it’s a girl. They say a girl steals your beauty and a boy steals your brains. False! Many women develop acne prone skin because of hormonal changes or if they eat a lot of spicy food.

I met Taha at a seminar and we hit it off right away! He is a very intelligent, cool guy and one of the top people in our field of work. His work is often used as a reference to projects I am assigned to. So, I was thrilled to meet him and pick his brains. And, it did not hurt at all that he is easy on the eyes!
You are like my hero! I had no idea my work was so... umm.. appreciated!
A couple of weeks later, out of the blue, he called me up asking if I wanted to grab some coffee. Of course, I said YES. Once there, we spent hours and hours talking about work and almost everything under the sun. He is fascinating and just by chatting I learned so much. I got the feeling he was interested in me. I was intrigued, but I am cautious by nature...
So, are you seeing anyone? Only my boss! And not in a fun way.
Another couple of weeks went by... he sent me an occasional email or some cool link on Facebook, always in private. But, we didn’t meet again. Then, two days ago I ran into him at a restaurant and...
>> After the thrill of the chase is over, some men lose interest. These men often have issues, so count yourself lucky
Hey! Hi!
M
ost of us girls have dated at least one magician. That’s right, the guy who does the Houdini act on you. One minute you see him, the next you don’t. He was asking you out for months and when you finally relented, he suddenly loses interest. You know it has nothing to do with you and thankfully, guys are so predictable… here’s a list of why he lost interest.
InItIal ego boost Most guys look at a girl they want as a conquest. It’s sad, but true. And if you’re wanted by more than one member of the male species then your ‘conquest status’ automatically rises. So, when you finally agree to go on a date with him, he’s won and now’s he’s off to find another conquest. And that’s all there is to it.
afraId to lose the rush This is a slightly complicated one. He actually likes you, and everything is
going great. So great that he’s afraid that once the honeymoon phase of dating is over, the two of you will fall out of love. To save himself the hassle of you breaking his heart later on, he nips the love in the bud before it even has a chance to bloom.
thrIll Is gone Some guys just love the chase but don’t quite know what to do once they get what they were after. They love showering their attention on you; they’re romantic and cheesy and know just the right things to say to get you. But once they do, it’s all downhill. He acts like a completely different man and the mush that he used to woo you, seems like history. We suggest you make the guy history too.
CommItment phobIC Ah, the C word! Most guys out there are afraid of settling down and missing out on so many other girls they could have
You don’t show Interest And he ignored me point blank!
After months, maybe years of chasing and no sign of reciprocation from you, it’s only natural that the guy will lose interest in asking you out or chasing you. If you already are in a relationship, your lack of interest will make him lose interest (or at least he will pretend to, so that his ego is saved). Guys have very fragile egos and they stay away from anything that looks like it might damage it. So, don’t be surprised if a boy loses interest in you. He probably isn’t worth it, and trust us… there are plenty of others out there.
« dear grace, i have a problem... dear grace, I keep having dreams that my boyfriend is cheating on me! I have no reason to suspect him and he’s a really great guy. We’ve even talked about it — he just laughs it off and reassures me that he never would. I believe him, but these dreams make me angry! Why is this happening and is there anything I can do to stop it affecting me? — shubhda patel, Khar (w)
dear shubhda, Dreams about cheating aren’t a prophecy so don’t worry about it. While sometimes these kinds of dreams do come true, most often they do not. Most dreams about a cheating boyfriend have nothing to do with your partner at all. It could be caused by anxiety, insecurity or even after a really good date. For instance, you could be worried about your appearance, or whether your man still
Uh...
potentially slept with. So don’t be surprised if talk about moving together, meeting the parents or simply asking him to be your date at a family wedding, has your guy running for the next train out of town. He probably does love you, but the thought that he’ll never be a bachelor again is too scary for him to face! Just yet at least.
finds you attractive, this could translate into you feeling like you’re not good enough for him which results in him cheating. At other times, it could be that you love him so much that your dreams show how painful it would be to lose him to another. Don’t let your dreams dictate your feelings – learn to laugh and let it go. I was slightly interested in him, but it’s not like I was expecting anything romantic. Not even a cookie with coffee!” — Confused Cadet a) He may have been interested in you romantically and his own guilt made him ignore you. Just ignore him. b) You aren’t being a stalker, are you? Sometimes interest in a person, enthusiastic interest, can come across that way. c) He sounds socially inept. It’s okay, it’s him, not you. Forget him. SAYS SARGUN MEHTA, BALIKA VADHU’S NEW GANGA. HERE’S WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY ABOUT HER LASTEST ROLE. By Sandeep Hattangadi
with me adding my nuances to the character.
How do you feel about playing Ganga? I am very happy. This is one show I have always wanted to be a part of. It is a respectable show which I have followed since I was in college. I never thought I would get offered such a role, as Ganga is a very docile and homely girl and I am very chirpy and outgoing in reality. But I am excited about my stint in Balika Vadhu. Have you been following Sriti’s portrayal of Ganga? Yes, but I will be essaying the character in a completely different way from hers

en weeks, 20 passionate junior cooks and a fiery competition – The debut season of Junior MasterChef India – Swaad Ke Ustaad on Star Plus came to an exhilarating finish recently where Emanuel Chauhan, Sarthak Bhardwaj and Sakshi Tripathi battled it out in the Junior Master Chef kitchen, as fellow contestants, parents, judges and a keen audience watched in anticipation. At the end of it all, the truly passionate, driven and perseverant 12-year-old Sarthak Bhardwaj from Dehradun emerged as the winner of Junior MasterChef - Swad Ke Ustaad and received a scholarship worth Rs. 20 lakh from Star Plus while the runners up Saakshi and Emanuel received scholarships of Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh each. “I didn’t want anything more than winning the title of Junior Masterchef Swaad Ke Ustaad. I wanted to prove to myself that I am a good cook and I am very happy that the judges found me good enough for the title,” says a modest Sarthak. “Sarthak was determined to win. From the very beginning he was sure of his purpose in this competition and ensured that he channelises all his experience of cooking to win,” says Chef Kunal.
What is it like working on the show? It’s great, although I have shot for just a few days. It’s interacting with the other actors, director and writer that are interesting. However, I have not had the opportunity of meeting the producer Sunjoy Wadhwa who should be credited for this long running show. I also like I working with the popular character Jagya. What do you have planned next? I have another show coming up, but can’t speak about it now. I was offered
Bigg Boss but I couldn’t take it up for certain reasons. I am however, interested in reality shows now. I am also interested in films and looking out for good roles and good directors and producers. But as of now I am happy with television. Who are the directors you would like to work with? Vishal Bharadwaj and Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra. Do you have anyone you look up to in this field? No one specific, but I am very inspired by Shahrukh Khan.
The new cook in town Winner of Junior Master Chef, 12-yearold Sarthak Bhardwaj, with his cheque. Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha was the guest star on the sets and motivated the top three with her bubbly enthusiasm. She kept the atmosphere playful and infused a whole lot of zing with her presence. While revealing the Golden Chef Coat for the winner, Sonakshi said, “I can’t pick a winner! I admire all
of them as they all are exceptional cooks for their age.” The finale was a mixed bag of emotions, ranging from happy and joyful, to excitement and anticipation – and a remarkable tribute to food! With a panel of eight judges – Chef Saby, MasterChef India winner
Ripudaman Handa, Terrence Lewis, former MasterChef contestant Koku Patra and Bhabho from Diya Aur Baati Hum, along with the three judges Chefs Vikas Khanna, Kunal Kapoor and Surjan Singh Jolly, the finale was nothing but a stellar showcase of culinary skill and celebrations.

Gold Imports To Decline By 41% This Year By A Business Reporter
G
old imports are likely to decline by 41% to 500 tonnes this financial year on account of curbs imposed by government, a top MMTC official said yesterday. “Gold imports have come down so far. I think the country’s overall imports would be 500 tonnes in 2013-14 as against 850 tonnes last year, state-run MMTC’s Chairman and Managing Director D S Dhesi told PTI. Around 400 tonnes have already been imported in the first six months of this fiscal, he said, adding that a maximum of another 100 tonnes would be imported this
year. Gold imports would be lower as there are government restrictions on its in-bound shipments, the MMTC chief said. Sluggish demand due to high domestic prices compared to global rates is also a reason, he added. Gold is being sold at a high premium due to supply crunch following government restrictions on imports, traders said. India, the world’s largest gold consumer, meets almost its entire demand through imports. Dhesi said MMTC would cut volume of gold imports for domestic consumption and enhance supply for export units to boost shipments. “We will import 30% less gold for local consumption.
SEBI Begins Attachment Proceedings By A Business Reporter
A
rmed with greater powers to deal with fraudsters and market manipulators, Sebi has initiated nearly 200 attachment proceedings for recovery of investors’ money and unpaid penalties from various defaulters. The proceedings have been launched in a period of little over a month and have been initiated as part of Sebi’s new powers to order freezing of bank accounts, attachment of properties, conduct of search and seizure operations and launch of recovery proceedings. Beginning late September, Sebi has already initiated close to 200 attachment proceedings for recovery of investor money amassed through illicit schemes, as also of long-pending penalties for various market related defaults, officials said. As part of its recovery proceedings, the regulator has served orders
to various banks to attach the accounts of those who have not paid penalties imposed on them for violations of various securities market regulations. These include freezing of bank accounts for recovery of funds totalling nearly Rs 1,550 crore, which includes over Rs 1,500 crore for one single case involving an illegal collective investment scheme in West Bengal. In this case, Sebi has ordered attachment of over 50 bank accounts of MPS Greenery Developers for recovery of Rs 1,520 crore, along with applicable returns, collected from investors through its illegal schemes. Sebi has also issued notices for attachment of bank accounts in other matters, including Pyramid Saimira case of 2012 and IPO fraud of 20032005. Besides, the recovery proceedings have been initiated against many entities for their failure to make the penalties imposed on them for various securities market violations.
But we will import more to meet export demand. We are targeting to supply about 3,000 kg of gold to export units this fiscal, as against 2,200 kg last year, he said. Dhesi also mentioned that the existing restrictions on gold imports are effective and there is no need for further tighten inbound shipments of gold. The Finance Ministry had directed MMTC to focus on supplying gold to export units. So far, 1,700 kg of gold has been supplied to these units, Dhesi said. Government had raised import duty on gold to 10% from 8% to address widening current account deficit.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013 A regular 40 minutes walk, balanced diet and adequate rest will help you remain in good health and have a longer sex life.
Aging and sex
Q: I am 67 year old man and enjoy sex once or twice a fortnight. After the act, my legs start paining and my breathing becomes heavy. Till date, I have not had any blood pressure, diabetes or heart problem. My family doctor tells me that I am a patient of hyperacidity, fear and anxiety. I want your advice. 1. Up to what age can sex be enjoyed? 2. Is it harmful to my health and what will be the side-effects of this? After doing so, I feel very weak, what medicine should I take for this? Sometimes I take multi-vitamin capsules. A: One can enjoy sex till one desires and is capable of, with mutual consent. However, the aging process affects all aspects of life; that is why there is something like ‘retirement age’ when even the most capable person has to quit his job and position. Aging gradually restricts all physical functions and affects all corporal attributes. How can the ability to perform sexual intercourse be an exception? The

muscular pains and exhaustion are a natural consequence of any physical exercise that is stretched beyond your natural physical capacity.
Q: I am male, 41, married; wife is aged 35. We are married for the last 15 years. Our relationship is very good and we have sex every week with contraception. She loves me and is dedicated to me. I have recently been feeling the need for another woman. Is it natural at this age? Can I approach a woman in the age group of 21 to 35 for such mature adult relationship? In this context, I would like to know woman psychology. Will an urban woman give a positive response to such a proposal? Or is it risky to ask such a question? A: After 15 years of a “very good” relationship you are expected to grow and mature together and explore deeper levels of love with each other. So no! It is not natural for a mature individual at this age to scout around for ‘variety entertainment’. Those who do, are those who have chosen to live a life confined to auto-sexuality, self-pleasuring and biology. But a human being is not just confined to his biology. He has been gifted with
‘discrimination’ and an innate capacity to grow in ‘love’, something that animals do not possess. You have said that your wife loves you and is dedicated to you. No where have you mentioned that you love her and are dedicated to her. And that is the root of your problem. When sex is an expression of love it is beautiful, if not, it is animal-like. No self-respecting urban woman would respond to your advances, and those who do are the auto-sexual ones for whom you are neither the first nor the last. Your desire for other women is simply a ‘symptom’ of deeper issues. You seem to be dissatisfied with life at the age of 41. See a counsellor who will help you reach the root of your problem.

ODHPUR: The Jodhpur police on Wednesday charged self-styled godman Asaram Bapu with wrongful confinement and rape of a 16-year-old girl, more than two months after he was arrested in the sexual assault case. The 1,011-page charge sheet, comprising 121 documents and statements of 58 witnesses, was filed in the District and Sessions Court in the presence of Asaram and four co-accused — Shilpi, Shiva, Prakash and Sharad Chandra. District and Sessions judge Manoj Kumar Vyas extended their judicial custody till November 16 when the arguments on the charges will begin, reports PTI. Asaram was arrested by the Jodhpur police from his ashram in Indore on August 31 night after the parents of the girl, an inmate of Chhindwara Gurukul in Madhya Pradesh, filed a complaint of rape against him. The four co-accused were taken into custody over the next few weeks. The charges against Asaram and other accused include sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 376(2)(f ) (rape of minor girl), 376 D (rape), 354 A (outraging a woman’s modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 109 (abetment to an offence) of the IPC, said prosecution

Dream debut for Shami, India starts ‘farewell’ series in style
Sachin Tendulkar rejoices after scalping the wicket of Shane Shillingford. [below] Tendulkar gestures towards the fans at the Eden Gardens.
By Tapan Mohanta
K
OLKATA: Pacer Mohammed Shami announced his arrival on the Test arena by scalping four wickets in a dream spell against the West Indies as a dominant India started Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series by taking early control of the first Test here. Shami returned impressive figures of 4/71 in 18 overs as India bowled out the visitors for a paltry 234 after they opted to bat at the Eden Gardens on the opening day. At stumps, India were comfortable placed at 37 for no loss with the two openers, Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Murali Vijay (16), at the crease. At the end of first day's play, India trailed the West Indies by 197 runs with all their wickets intact. West Indies skipper Darren Sammy's decision to bat may have prevented the crowd from watching Tendulkar bat on the first day itself, but the 40-year-old retiring legend did his bit with the bowl picking up a wicket in his first over itself, taking his Test wicket tally to 46. While Tendulkar was undoubtedly the cynosure of all eyes, Shami grabbed the opportunity with hot hands as he rocked the West Indies middle-order with a hostile spell that included quite a few reverse-swinging deliveries. The 23-year-old Shami's wickets included Kieran Powell, top-scorer Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin and Sheldon Cottrell. Earlier, West Windies were placed were placed comfortably at 107 for two at lunch, but Shami wreaked havoc in the second session, extracting excellent reverse swings from the Eden pitch to trigger a collapse. The touring side lost eight wickets for 96 runs to be skittled out in 78 overs. Samules scored 65 off 98 balls with the help of 11 fours and two sixes. About 40,000 turned up on the first day, expecting Tendulkar to bat. While that did not happen, with the ball he turned the clock back as he trapped Shane Shillingford in front of the wicket with a straighter one after bowling three turning deliveries. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (1/62) too impressed with his tidy bowling but he was unlucky twice with skipper Dhoni dropping Samuels and Shane Shillingford on two occasions. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed 2/52. Born in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Shami moved to Bengal eight years ago on coach Badruddin SIddique's insistence as there were not many opportunities for the young pacer in his home state. Son of a farmer, Shami, who hails from a remote village called Sahaspur abouut 22kms from Moradabad, found his calling in Kolkata where club cricket was very much ac-

tive as he went on to ply his trade for clubs like Dalhousie AC and Town before being called for Bengal under22. He was also a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in IPL 2011 and the tips from bowling consultant Wasim Akram proved invaluable. It was a good move by Dhoni as he preferred Shami over the out-of-sorts Ishant Sharma, who, incidentally, gave the Test cap to the debutant pacer. The other debutant of the day was Rohit Sharma and he got the cap from Tendulkar. Shami showed fine fitness as he bowled in four spells with the third being the longest and most fruitful (7-0-30-2). He was at his best in the last spell that read 3-1-2-1. Shami was also instrumental in Darren Bravo's run-out as West Windies committed a harakiri in the middle, losing three wickets in as many overs to tilt the match in favour of India.
Shami got his maiden Test scalp in the form of Powell (28) after Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave the initial breakthrough, taking the prized wicket of Chris Gayle (18). India exploited the slow Eden pitch to good effect as Bhuvneshwar dismissed Gayle with a low delivery. Both theWI openers looked impatient and got out in the space of four overs. Playing his first Test at his home ground, Shami was impressive from the first over as he troubled both the openers. With his second ball, Shami nipped one back against Powell, but the height saved the left-hander who appeared a little tentative to start with. Gayle, on the other hand, went about in his usual brisk manner and even had an inside edge off Shami but was lucky as the ball missed the stumps. Dhoni made a smart change, bringing in Shami from the
High Court end that resulted in the wicket of Powell. Samuels slowly repaired the damage as he completed his 19th half century in his happy hunting ground, where he had scored his maiden Test hundred in 2002, as the Caribbeans went to lunch smiling. Shami castled Samuels with a sharp in-cutter to grab his second wicket, which broke a fine 91-run partnership with Bravo. Dhoni gave the last over before tea to Tendulkar, bringing the crowd on its feet. It turned out be a masterstroke by the 'Captain Cool'. After bowling three deliveries, the maestro unleashed a flipper and Shillingford had no answer. BRIEF SCORES: West Indies 234 all out in 78 overs [Marlon Samuels 65, Shami Ahmed 4/71] lead India 37 for no loss in 12 overs [Shikhar Dhawan batting 21] by 197 runs.
KOLKATA: Sachin Tendulkar fans were left disappointed as they could not watch him bat on the opening day of his penultimate and 199th Test, but they had moments of celebration when he took a West Indian wicket here. Die-hard Tendulkar fans would have loved to see him bat on the opening day of the first Test itself but they were left disappointed after India lost the toss. But they had something to cheer when a tricky delivery from Tendulkar deceived West Indies player Shane Shillingford and the whole stadium stood up to cheer the retiring senior batsman. Shouting 'Sachin Sachin' on the top of their voices and vigorously waving the Indian tricolour, a festive atmosphere engulfed the stadium all of a sudden as Shillingford was adjudged LBW off Tendulkar on five in the 63rd over at the Eden Gardens. This was his 46th Test wicket.
In the two overs he bowled, Tendulkar gave only five runs, while grabbing a wicket. It was at the same venue Tendulkar had conceded just three runs in the last over in the Hero Cup semifinal in November 1993 to deny South Africa a win.

More goof-ups from CAB in Sachin’s 199th Test A
By Tapan Mohanta
K
OLKATA: India's hero of the day Mohammed Shami said that the change of ball helped his cause as the replaced one started swinging much more enabling him to get rid of a set Marlon Samuels and an experienced Denesh Ramdin off successive overs during the opening day of first Test. "The first ball was softer and I wasn't able to get a lot of swing with it. But after the ball was changed, it started swinging and reversing. It was a great feeling to bowl with the changed ball as well watch others bowl," Shami told mediapersons after the end of the day's play. He has enjoyed a decent success in ODIs but the 23-year-old Bengal-based speedster said that there wasn't much adjustments that he had to make while switch-
ing from the 50-over format to the days version. "Only the (jersey) colour changes (in Test format). There's no alteration in basic line and length bowling. There wasn't any plan as such. My strength lies in line, length and swing. I don't change my technique as per op-
I dedicate this performance to Sachin: Shami
KOLKATA: Basking in the glory of a dream Test debut, talented speedster Mohammed Shami today dedicated his four-wicket haul to Sachin Tendulkar, who is playing the second-last match of his illustrious career. Shami said it was a dream come true for him to play alongside Sachin Tendulkar who will retire after the second Test against the West Indies in Mumbai. "It's a big thing for me that I made my debut in a match where Tendulkar was playing. It's the biggest achievement for me that I could play alongside Sachin Tendulkar. I dedicate this performance to Tendulkar." "I was already a part of the T20 and ODI squads, so the dream was only to play for India in the Tests and do something for my country. That's the biggest thing for me," he added.
ponents." He bowled three West Indies batsmen with lethal in-cutters but the debut wicket of Kieran Powell, will always remain the special one. "I just did my job. Nothing more than that. But the debut wicket (Kieran Powell) will always remain extra-special for me although all the wickets are equally important. He further said: "I am always up for challenge. I don't back off. I get adjusted wherever I feel nice." Shami said that the senior players including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had told him to stick to a plan. "All the seniors told me to stick to the plan that was chalked out. I did just that," he added. Son of a farmer, Shami had to come to Kolkata in 2007 to revive his cricketing career as there were not much opportunity in his remote village Sahaspur near Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Indian bowlers didn’t give us anything: Samuels K
OLKATA: West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels said the Indian bowlers did not give them an inch and felt things became more difficult after the ball was changed in the second session of the first cricket Test here. Opting to bat after winning the toss, West Indies were all out for 234 with Samuels top-scoring with a knock of 65 on the opening day. Debutant Indian pacer Mohammed Shami picked 4/71. "To be honest, the Indian bowlers didn't give us anything. They were very disciplined the way they bowled. They attacked the stumps. When you go out there, you have to work very hard to get some runs. I backed myself and took my chance early," Samuels told reporters. Samuels said the Indian attack became more penetrating after they changed the ball. "It was pretty easy going till the ball changed. Then it started doing a little bit more." All praise for Shami, Samuels said the pacer has good future for India. "I've only seen Shami in a one-day game. For him to come into a Test match... Everybody deserves a chance, you know. You can't look at someone and say he's a one-day cricketer. He got his opportunity and he made full

well. The future for young Shami is looking very good," he added. Samuels further said it was disappointing to not capitalise after winning the toss in the first of the two-match series, which is retiring legend Sachin Tendulkar's last.
fter having made a goof-up in spelling Sachin Tendulkar's name, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) were in for another embarrasment when they addressed the batting legend's wife as "Mr" Anjali in the welcome message on the giant electronic scoreboard. The CAB's second goof-up came in as many days when the giant display at the High Court end kept on flashing Welcome "Mr Anjali Tendulkar and Master Arjun Tendulkar" during the lunch break on the opening day of the first cricket Test between India and West Indies. As Anjali along with son Arjun got into the President's box around the lunch break, the giant screen flashed the wrong message and it was only after a few minutes that the mistake was realised and corrected, but by then the damage was done. The CAB, which had already drawn flak for its overenthusiastic preparations for Tendulkar's 199th Test, had yesterday miss-spelt the senior batsman's name as "Sachine" in a giant billboard. The CAB had then put the entire blame on a private agency. The CAB, however, apologised for the goofup. "It's really unfortunate that something or other is happening everyday. We're helpless now as it's being looked after by a private agency. However, we're committed to take action against the agency after the match gets over. We apologise for the inconvenience it caused," an apologetic CAB joint secretary Subir Ganguly said. SPECIAL MOMENTS FROM TENDULKAR'S LIFE IN A BOOKLET Saluting the genius of Sachin Tendulkar, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) today came out with a souvenir in the form of a booklet, capturing rare moments from the legend's life in photographs and memoirs. The booklet was presented to the legendary batsman before he took to the field for his 199th and penultimate Test match at the Eden Gardens here. The first page of the booklet has a sketch of a young Tendulkar with curly hair by renowned artist Jogen Chowdhury. Some rare photographs of Tendulkar include those from his younger days, one after he got married to wife Anjali. Another photograph captures him spending some private moments with his family members. Other snaps include him sleeping inside a dressing room and chilling out with teammates, besides scoring runs, practicing with the bat or playing with a ball.

OLKATA: Mumbai FC went down 0-1 to Mohammedan SC in an I-League Round-9 encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium here today. A first-half penalty by striker Josimar Martins in the 35th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides. With this loss Mumbai FC dropped to tenth place with 7 points while the hosts rise up to seventh place with 10 points. Coach Khalid Jamil made two changes to the team bringing in Manuel D’Souza and Haroon Amiri in place of Subhas Chakraborty and the suspended Ashutosh Mehta. It was Mumbai FC who almost took the lead in the second minute. Mohammedan midfielder Sandeep Sangha almost scored an own goal while trying to clear Nicholas Rodrigues’ freekick; however an alert Ashok Singh tipped over. The game then lost its pace as both sides failed to create chances. The hosts went close on a couple of occasions but Mumbai FC custodian Nidhin Lal kept them at bay. The hosts were awarded a penalty five minutes past the half-hour mark, when defender Ritesh Perambra handled inside the box. Josimar converted from the spot to give Mohammedan the lead.

IN BRIEF ASSOCHAM urges Ministry to bring BCCI under RTI ambit
NE W DEL HI: ASSOCHAM, an apex industry body, has suggested the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to bring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. "The BCCI is not a registered National Sports Federation as it does not take any grants from the government and thus it cannot be brought under the RTI Act, but if the National Draft on Sports Development Bill 2013 is finally passed by the Parliament, then BCCI may not be able to use the word 'India'," said the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, in a communication addressed to Sports Minister Jitendra Singh. As per the Draft National Sports Development Bill 2013, only those federations who come under the RTI ambit will have the right to use 'India' as the team name.
N.Zealand end Bangladesh tour with Twenty20 win
DHAKA: Colin Munro and Anton Devcich hit half-centuries and Tim Southee grabbed three wickets as New Zealand ended their Bangladesh tour with a 15-run victory in the Twenty20 match in Dhaka at the Shere-Bangla National Stadium. . Munro returned unbeaten on 73 off 39 balls after debutant Devcich had smashed 59 off 31 balls to lift the Black Caps to 204-5, their second-highest total in Twenty20 cricket behind the 214-6 against Australia in 2010. The tourists, beaten in all three one-day internationals after a drawn two-Test series, restricted Bangladesh to 189-9 in front of some 35,000 disappointed home fans. Set a target of more than 10 runs an over, Bangladesh made a shaky start losing three wickets in the first two overs for 19 runs. Southee, who finished with three for 38 dismissed openers Shamsur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman in the first over.
