OPINIONS
Do you think interest in politics is on the rise among today’s youth ?
Sandeep Deshpande MNS group leader Yes. It is the byproduct of social media. Facebook, WhatApp and other social networking sites are giving platforms to discuss social and political problems in locality as well as in the country. Siddharth Kumar Financial expert Yes. With renewed political environment in the current scenario, today’s youth are getting more involved in political affairs.
Gajanan Pattewar Entrepreneur Yes. GenerationNext is taking interest in politics and various issues. They are fed up of corruption, and unemployment. Hope to see more youngsters in the next Parliament. Munna Hakke Student I don’t think so. Today youth are more involved in various movements. It does not mean they are inclined toward clean politics. B
ment of the civic body finalized plans to construct a new bridge here, and the proposal was passed in the Corporation on May 8, 2013 with budget provision of Rs.6 crore made in present fiscal year. While addressing locals, Shewale said, “The BMC is the only civic body that doesn’t charge property tax on shanties and has lesser water charges for them.” He added, “The civic body has plans to make world-class cement concrete roads and better sanitation facilities in Dharavi.”
Under normal circumstances, either the mayor, Sunil Prabhu or the Sena president, Uddhav Thackeray attend such inaugurations. The project concerns a very crucial bridge that connects the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway via Dharavi, and the earlier bridge structure, built by the Public Works Department of the state government in 1982, had caved in on August 6, 2011. Traffic had become a nightmare due to absence of this bridge. The Road and Bridge depart-

A student who spoke to the ADC, but did not wish to be named, said, “A mobile phone is the only mode of communication for us students and our parents. Parents, most of the time, are worried about our exams, our whereabouts, and whether we have reached the correct exam centre at the correct time. Even after switching off the device, we will be banned from exams! This is completely unfair!” Since 2012, more than 25 cases have been brought up in the grievance cell regarding the possession of materials leading to copying. The ADC spoke to Pradeep Sawant, member of the senate member and the Students Grievance Cell, MU, who said “This is unfair to the students. tudents currently preparing for their semesters at most colleges have just got a shocker - a strict new rule states that any student possessing a mobile phone, even if it is switched off, will not be allowed to appear for the exams, and further will be banned from exams for a whole year. According to an ordinance of Maharashtra Universities Act, any electronic gadget, whether working or non-working, carried into the examination hall will be considered as a material possessed by the student for copying. As per the rules, the student will be debarred from the exams for a year, and will only be able to appear for the exams exactly after the completion the punishment period. Quick workers when they want to be!
That was quick - a new proposed amendment to the Shops and Establishments Act, recently passed by the Maharashtra State Legislature, to allow restaurants to remain open throughout the night, apparently for the benefit of visiting tourists. We are very tempted to ask, “Where’s the fire?” and “How about asking people in residential areas who have been plagued by barely legal establishments carousing through the night, shouting matches in the early hour of the morning, and the lusty sound of huge metal pots and pans being cleaned on the road. This is what 24/7 means in Mumbai and we certainly do not think that tourists will be particularly charmed. On the other hand, the denizens of the underworld are bound to have a good time and as for the police – they can sit back with arms folded saying that we asked for it. Why is it that our so-called rulers exhibit not an iota of common sense when they take snap decisions on issues like this? That’s an easy one – they usually have no common sense (or uncommon, for that matter); which is why Mumbai is constantly swinging between extremes. On the one hand, there are the khaps in uniform who want to solve all Mumbai’s problems by keeping the

If you can’t eat it, you might as well sit on it. And possibly this is Mumbai’s most comforting spot in these days of high humidity coupled with high temperatures. The weather bureau has pretty good news for the week ahead – largely cloudy weather with some rain. This means that the monsoon is not yet over and for that we are truly thankful. Once out of October, we can expect our own version of “winter” to settle in. Meanwhile, hie yourself over to Somaiya College in Ghatkopar, there to park your bottom on a whole round of water melon!
whole population at home after sunset. On the other, you have the spectacle of a whole government declaring that Mumbai’s nightlife is going to be resurrected in the literal sense. Except that it is not nightlife that will come alive. Just lowlife!
How does that work?
Mumbai’s most famous baker, Zend M. Zend of Yazdani, was here again to tell us of this fantastic concert he attended at the NCPA. His friend Errol Monserrate played the violin in a piece conducted by

She’s back – and how!
So overpowering has Falguni Pathak’s presence been on the Navratri scene that it is difficult to remember that this astounding performer has actually been away from the city for a long time.
If you are wondering what is it that makes thousands flock to the venue where Navratri queen Falguni Pathak is performing, read on to know what we found out on a visit to the venue on Saturday. The venue is the police grounds at Ghatkopar. The sound is mind blowing (no – honestly!) Her band, onomatopoeically called Ta Thaiya, is all charged up. The

band gets its charge from Falguni. And so does the crowd. She actually interacts with them, waving, shaking hands, all that love and rapport flowing out in a river of feeling. The crowd loves her, but what is equally obvious is that she loves them right back. The outfit is the usual, some jhinchak on jacket and trousers. We think it was some form of
velvet but really, who cares. Once she gets started, you don’t even notice the boyish hair cut or the clothes. She is just music, a lovely, energetic voice flowing above the sound of the band, always in control. She and the crowd actually seem to be one organic whole. Know something else? There seems to be very little Bollywood style hungama though no doubt we will see some of them traipsing in during the next few days. Deepika Padukone’s name is being dropped. Unlike a lot of pandals this one sticks largely to the traditional Gujarati numbers. A day before the festival started, we visited the venue and got a glimpse of the Dandiya Queen trying her hand at drumming. One to one, she is actually quite shy! And answers all questions patiently and without fuss. There was no getting away from her delight in being at Ghatkopar, the place where she last performed in 1987, when the world and she were different! So, how many people did she think were dancing on the grounds, we asked, as we said goodbye. The shrug is eloquent. “No calculations! I never count the numbers. I just sing for the people.”

Anyway, he says, there are much fewer Parsis now in the audience. It’s mixed, he says. We cannot figure out whether he approves or not.

Celebrating its 31st year, Bhayandar’s Banga Sangha has set up a huge structure for Goddess Durga.
60-feet tall temple for Durga! Artists from Kolkata design one of the tallest structures for the Goddess in Bhayandar By A Staff Reporter
W
hile the city is already shining with the vibrant colours of Navratri, hand artists are trying their best to install innovative and creative structures of the Goddess. Making it one of the tallest installations of the year, the ‘Banga Sangha’ from Bhayandar, which is celebrating its 31st year of Durga Puja has set up a different structure for the Goddess. According to Ramchandra Mandal, President of Banga Sangha, “Bringing in artists from Kolkata, the Sangha has installed a 60-feet tall temple which represents the Sai Baba temple in Sikkim. The team of Vishwanath Ghosh has designed the 60x60 structure made
up of bamboo, cloth and fiber. The ‘Banga Sangha’ has also brought in the ‘Dhaki Band’, a traditional band from Kolkatta which performs during the processions of Durga Pooja.” Ratin Dutta, Deputy President, Banga Sangha, said, “As most people cannot travel to Kolkata, we have brought in the artist from Kolkatta to Bhayender and design the structure of the Goddess. It resembles the Sai Baba temple in Sikkim and gives the devotees an innovative and creative structure which stands 60-feet tall!” So this year, the Sangha gives you a feel of Sikkim’s Sai Baba temple with the essence of Kolkatta to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga.

Ponder awhile... “True terror is a language and a vision. There is a deep narrative structure to terrorist acts, and they infiltrate and alter consciousness in ways that writers used to aspire to.” — Don DeLillo
A larger destabilisation move in Kashmir? P
AKISTAN says there is no infiltration bid either at Keran or anywhere else along the Line of Control (LoC). Pakistan’s High Commissioner in India asserts all allegations regarding incursions by Pakistan are baseless. He regretted that unnecessary hysteria is being created over an issue that does not exist. Our border forces have – during the past two weeks – killed seven terrorists at Keran and seized large quantities of arms and ammunition. The battle has lasted for over two weeks and what has happened at Keran was the biggest infiltration bid by Pakistan. Pakistan’s reaction to Indian charges about the incursion bid is as per expectation. As usual, it has denied any incursion bid. A major battle has taken place and the Indian army has now in its possession – large quantities of rocket launchers and weapons, but the Pakistan government has once again gone into the familiar denial mode. It is unlikely that President Pranab Mukherjee’s remark that the attack could not have come from heaven but could have come only from the territory which is under Pakistan’s control will make our neighbour admit it has launched a massive infiltration campaign and is fighting our army. The world over, Pakistan is making a laughing stock of itself by ignoring the reality at LoC. Our army is reporting more infiltration bids by Pakistani terrorists. They are bringing with them not only weapons but also rations and some shelter kits. The question arises whether Pakistan has a larger destabilisation programme in Kashmir this year than during the past.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2013
N his reply to my letter, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said: “I look forward to a time when Pakistan and India will be able to shed the debilitating baggage of the past and focus more on the future, when opportunities, rather than challenges, define the relationship between two proud and sovereign nations.” His meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is an evidence of his ardent desire to make up with India. Hostility between India and Pakistan is so proverbial that any movement towards lessening it comes as a relief. The meeting between the two may not have spanned the distance between the two countries. Yet it has broken the ice and it is a good beginning. The skeptics are hard to please, particularly when Nawaz Sharif did not assure Manmohan Singh on the terrorist training camp in Pakistan (they number around 30). The meeting is a step forward. Both Prime Ministers were under great pressure from their domestic lobbies of opposition. Still they stood the ground and met for an hour. Both should be complimented in preferring a dialogue to the cancellation of the meeting which would have damaged the prospects of peace.
The Taliban menace, which has made practically every place in Pakistan unsafe, has to be met squarely. Chief of Army Staff General Parvez Kayani has declared that the Pakistan army would stay in Swat, part of Northern Waziristan, near the Afghanistan border. At the same time, he has differed with Nawaz Sharif on talks with the Taliban. He should recognise the fact that the entire region has come to be threatened by the resurgence of Al-Qaida, directing the Taliban. The situation may get aggravated when the Western troops withdraw from Afghanistan next year. Already the Al-Qaida is recruiting
Arab Spring when the youth and liberal elements came on to the streets to confront the fundamentalists. At that time, every Muslim country began chanting the mantra of democracy. The fundamentalists were able to create division in the ranks of students and defeat the demand for democratic regimes. The Al-Qaida’s fundamentalist ideology can revive the spirit of Arab Spring. I wish Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif had discussed the resurgence of Al-Qaida. Both India and Pakistan, particularly the latter, have to ponder over the vacuum created after the Western forces quit. If combating terrorism is a priority for the two countries, the Al-Qaida and its instruments of tyranny, the Taliban, should be on top of their agenda. In fact, the Taliban in the shape of mujahideen are already operating in India. The situation is still under control. But the birth of Hindu Taliban should be a point of concern for India.
Joint action by both countries needed
I wish the two countries would realise the gravity of the situation and discuss a joint action. New Delhi should be able to anticipate the situation it could face if Islamabad goes under or functions at the behest of the Kuldip Nayar Taliban. Even Kenya and Nigeria have not been able to escape the Al-Qaida’s fury. PeI have not been able to understand the logic of those who have opposed the meeting. young men and training them for strikes after shawar, the capital of the North Western Is there any other option? Animals and us
LL perfectly formed animals are to be divided into three parts, one that by which food is taken in, one that by which excrement is discharged, and the third the region intermediate between them. In the largest animals this latter is called the chest and in the others something corresponding; in some also it is more distinctly marked off than in others. All those also that are capable of progression have additional members subservient to this purpose, by means of which they bear the whole trunk, to wit legs and feet and whatever parts are possessed of the same powers. Now it is evident both by observation and by inference that the source of the nutritive soul is in the midst of the three parts. For many animals, when either part -- the head or the receptacle of the food -- is cut off,
retain life in that member to which the middle remains attached. This can be seen to occur in many insects, e.g. wasps and bees, and many animals also besides insects can, though divided, continue to live by means of the part connected with nutrition.
MATTER & SPIRIT While this member is indeed in actuality single, yet potentially it is multiple, for these animals have a constitution similar to that of plants; plants when cut into sections continue to live, and a number of trees can be derived from one single source. In this respect, however, plants and insects are alike. It is true that the nutritive soul, in beings possessing it, while actually single must
be potentially plural. And it is too with the principle of sensation, for evidently the divided segments of these animals have sensation. They are unable, however, to preserve their constitution, as plants can, not possessing the organs on which the continuance of life depends, for some lack the means for seizing, others for receiving their food; or again they may be destitute of other organs as well. Divisible animals are like a number of animals grown together, but animals of superior construction behave differently because their constitution is a unity of the highest possible kind. Hence some of the organs on division display slight sensitiveness because they retain some psychical susceptibility; the animals continue to move after the vitals have been abstracted: tortoises, for example, do so even after the heart has been removed. — Aristotle

Beleaguered Lalu may lead Bihar by proxy MEDIA reports say that the irrepressible Lalu, a past master in proxy-governance, is likely to do it again, this time leading his party from his prison cottage through Rabri Devi who, after having tasted power as the chief minister for quite some time, looks a lot more confident now and fully in control of her party. He is reportedly enjoying VVIP facilities in the prison, what with a separate cottage, unlimited visiting time and all that, holding ‘durbar’ there. With the sympathy wave for him in his native state for having been handed out a harsh sentence, notwithstanding his contributions as chief minister and railway minister, it will not be surprising if he puts up several mem-

Also, it was Pranabda who was responsible for the withdrawal of the stinking ordinance on corruption as he had made it clear to the Prime minister that he was not happy with it, much before Rahul Gandhi emerged on the scene to earn brownie points. 100 per cent funding against zero investment gives MBMC distinction of being first civic body to get 100 new buses under JNNURM

n a much needed respite for commuters in the twin-city, the public transport wing of the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is all set to add 100 new buses to its existing fleet from funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Interestingly the MBMC has also become the first civic body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which has successfully obtained an 80 per cent funding nod from the Centre, while the remaining 20 per cent cost of bus purchases will be borne by the state government. This was revealed by MBMC Mayor Catlin Pereira, while speaking to media-persons at the MBMC headquarters on Monday. “It was the need of the hour to augment the existing bus fleet for the convenience of commuters.

The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport is set to acquire a fleet of 100 new buses, says Civic chief Suresh Kakani and Mayor Catlin Pereira. Moreover, the current approval of 100 buses with zerofunding norms will ensure that the MBMC will save Rs.8 crore. We are also on the lookout for land for suitable busdepots in the region and efforts are on to acquire some part of a land reserved for an ST Depot in Bhayandar (West),” said Pereira. The MBMC has got ap-
proval of a total package of Rs.41.30 crore, which includes Rs.35.30 crore for the purchase of new buses, and to make the transport utility sustainable, an additional funding of Rs.6 crore has been sanctioned to support infrastructure like bus depots. “We will utilize the funds to buy 70 standard size
(900MM) buses, 10 mini, 10 medium and 10 air-conditioned buses. The centre has released its share of advance money amounting Rs.18.92 crore, and the first batch of buses is likely to roll out within four months,” revealed municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani. In the current pattern of JNNURM funding availed by
the MBMC, 50 and 20 per cent cost of bus purchase has been provided by the Centre and State governments respectively, the remaining 30 per cent (to be paid by the MBMC) is borne by the private operator under the Net Cost PPP model, adopted by the MBMC. Ulhasnagar-based Kestrel Infrastructure has inked a 10-
year build-own-operate-andtransfer deal agreeing to pay a royalty of Re.1 per km. Presently, around 50 out of a fleet of 63 buses ply in and out of the twincity. While the MBMT boasts of operating on 33 routes, buses on around 12 routes are non-operational, apparently due to shortage of buses.

While MNS leaders said that they had taken adequate permission to install the banner with wooden frames, Padhye claimed that the banner had blocked her residence. While a case under section 427 of the IPC has been registered, the police said it will question the corporator’s daughter and also check if appropriate permissions were indeed taken to put up the banner. Wear & tear >> No doubt these two look suave, but the tight collar and body shaping garments can do you more harm than good in the long run
If you’re in the pink of health but suddenly feel hot, flustered and as though you’re going to faint, read this article before blaming the weather! Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh tell you how your choice of clothing may be affecting your health
S
kinny jeans, tight tops, chunky necklaces and tight ties may be trendy, but you should think twice before you decide to hop on to the bandwagon and make them part of your wardrobe. A hair band that is too tight can cause a compression headache, while the wrong kind of shoes can cause problems for your heels. Didn’t think the clothes you wear could have such a heavy impact on your health, did you? Well, they can! Take a look at what you may be doing wrong.
Head First Are you treating your hair right? Are you being unkind to your scalp? We tell you what mistakes you may be making when it comes to hair accessories and head gear: tight ponytails: If you have long hair, we understand how wearing it up in a tight ponytail can actually be a necessity. But, you may need to find another method to keep all your hair tied together or grow comfortable wearing it loose because a tight ponytail is very bad for your hair. Pulling it back tightly causes something known as traction alopecia, which is a form of hair loss that can cause a receding hairline. It also creates scarring and damages your hair follicles, which means that your hair will stop growing at a healthy rate. Hair extensions: If your locks are getting a little help with sewed in hair extensions, you need to sit up and pay attention. Not only can improper application cause traction alopecia, sewed in extensions can cause hair loss and if they’re attached too tightly and they can be the reason for your headache! If you must have a few extensions, pick the glued on type. If you need thicker extensions, use a method of bonding called Thermo Continued on pg 14 «

>> Shoes that are too small can cause painful bunions
Continued from pg 13 « Plastique, which is a comparatively gentler treatment compared to the rest. Hair accessories: Did you know that clips, bobby pins and hair bands can damage your hair and health? Clips and bobby pins get caught in strands of your hair, causing split ends. And guys with long hair, those tootight comb hair bands dig into the sides of your head, restricting blood flow and causing headaches. Too much gel: Guys, be careful here. Hair gels generally contain a lot of chemicals and these products damage your hair as well as your scalp. Don’t apply it daily and use as little as possible. Caps all the time: If you wear a hat or a cap all the time, you could be doing yourself more harm than good. It’s good to protect your head from the sun, but don’t wear a cap throughout the day. Tight caps can limit circulation while wearing the same cap every day and sweating inside it can lead to dandruff problems. >> A tight ponytail can cause a headache
GeTTiNG LeGGy
Very flat shoes: Wondering what can be wrong with a harmless pair of flats? These shoes may feel comfortable at first, but they are doing nothing to support your feet and can ultimately cause foot pain. Most flats provide no arch support and have very little padding in the insole, which means you are essentially wearing a very thick sock. This can lead to heel pain and plantar fasciitis. The latter refers to an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick tendon that connects the heel bone to the toes and creates the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis makes walking difficult and painful. Flat loafers for men and ballet pumps for women are usually guilty of this problem. If you can feel the ground below your heel, your shoes need better support. pointy toed shoes: In addition to hammer toes, pointy-toed shoes can cause neuroma, an inflammation of the nerve between the toes. The pinched and inflamed nerve causes pain and burning and may need to be treated with injections, physical therapy, or even surgical removal of the neuroma.

Bad tops and shirts can constrict blood flow, make you ill and even cause rashes and outbreaks. Here’s how to make sure that doesn’t happen: Fabric talk: Don’t wear synthetic materials during summer because you’ll feel much hotter than it is. Also, sometimes if you’re getting a back rash or irritable skin, make sure you find out whether the fabric you’re wearing suits your skin type. Too tight: Ensure that the tops you’re wearing are not too tight. A very tight t-shirt restricts circulation, which is very bad for you. You will end up with backaches, tummy aches and sometimes even feel dizzy.
Whether it’s a tight tie, bad necklace or too many chains — your neck can also suffer from the brunt of your bad clothing choices. Take a look at what you may need to change: Costume jewellery: It’s extremely pretty, but avoid wearing it if it’s been through a little wear and tear and has started to peel off or rust. You could get skin reactions and rashes because of the mix of cheap metals that are used to make them. Too many accessories: In a city as hot as Mumbai, wearing too many necklaces at once is a bad idea. Sweat and metal react badly together and can cause irritation, rashes and other problems. Heavy earrings are also harmful, especially if they’re dragging your earlobes down. There’s no
BesT FooT Forward The footwear that you wear is obviously responsible for the condition that your feet are in. Did you know that seemingly comfortable footwear such as a pair of flip flops can harm your feet tremendously? We tell you about shoes that you should not wear on a regular basis: Flip flops: Or any other footwear that leaves your toes open and just has a support between the big toe and second toe may seem comfortable, but they are actually harmful for your health. Flip flops and other such footwear lack support, which can ultimately lead to foot pain. They frequently cause foot disorders such as plantar fasciitis, tendon problems and ankle sprains. stilettos: They might make you look and feel sexy, but stiletto heels are one of the biggest causes of foot pain. Stiletto heels increase pressure on the forefoot and are usually narrow, which creates issues for people with bunions and other biomechanical forefoot issues. The problem is greater when we wear high heels all day and go home and remove our shoes. This creates increased stretching of the Achilles tendon.
reason to make your ears go through that. Besides, it could lead to torn earlobes and infections. Tight collars: Loosen your collar a little bit and get rid of your tight scarf because it could be making you feel dizzy. A very tight scarf, tie or collar can constrict your circulation, making it tougher for you to breathe.
>> Too many or chunky accessories around the neck can cause rashes
From skinny pants to tight belts, your bottom wear can give you lot of health problems. We bring you the top offenders: Tight pants/skinny jeans: This is one of the top offenders (for men and women).

leg because of the constriction. Their thigh then goes to sleep and when they stand up, it feels like their foot isn’t under them. This condition itself isn’t dangerous, but if you keep having repeated episodes, it can cause permanent damage. Another problem is the ‘tight pants syndrome’ which is marked by abdominal discomfort, heartburn and belching from wearing those skin-tight slacks. Normally these pants are three inches too small for a person’s waist. When you put pressure on the abdomen, food doesn't digest. It risks not being able to be digested properly especially for people who have reflux esophagitis, heartburn or chronic heartburn. Tight clothing can aggravate these problems. Men should be especially concerned when trying to squeeze on tight pants as it can cause a testicular torsion, where one testicle gets twisted on itself. If left untreated, the torsion can cut off circulation and cause the testicle to die. This condition is also very painful. A survey done in 2012 involving 2,000 British men showed that one in 10 men have had discomfort from wearing skinny jeans. Half of those men said they had problems with their groin, while over a quarter of them had bladder trouble. One in five had a twisted testicle. Tight waist bands: You know that feeling when you unbutton your jeans and feel like you’ve just been given extra breath? It’s probably because you’re wearing your pants too tight. Loosen the waistband or belt a bit to avoid abdominal pain.
UNderNeaTH iT aLL Don’t forget your underwear! It can be the most unhealthy part of your outfit! Take a look at what could be causing the problem: Bad bras: You have no idea how important a good bra is. An ill-fitting bra can cause backaches, shoulder aches and problems as serious as hiatus hernia. Make sure your straps aren’t so tight that they’re pulling your
A common complaint among regular wearers of skinny jeans and tight pants is a numbness that goes down their thigh known as meralgia paresthetica. shoulders down and that your cups and the underwire aren’t too constricted. slimming underwear & tight boxer briefs: Squeezing into a corset-like body-shaper or tight boxer briefs may look better than normal underwear, but it can also contribute to GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux disease) and lead to serious heartburn problems. Body shaping garments and tight innerwear increase pressure on the abdomen and stomach. Stomach contents then have a greater likelihood of refluxing from the stomach and into the esophagus due to this increased pressure. Lacy underwear: Lacy underwear is fine if you wear it occasionally, but may cause problems if worn every day. Synthetic fabrics and especially irregular edges on a thong can cause itching, burning and irritation. Lacy underwear combined with skinny jeans or slimming undergarments may make the problem worse and can increase the risk of recurrent yeast infections.

The big debate >> Doubtful whether ‘low-fat’ products translate into healthy products? We find out

W
ith the calorieconscious population in today’s world, many products have now lowfat and ‘healthier’ avatars — this includes foods such as chips, soup, milk and soft drinks. While tags of ‘zero-calorie’ and ‘slimming’ may make you guiltlessly buy these products, have you ever given a thought to how many calories you’re actually saving and whether it’s even worth it? We tell you the calorie difference between the low-fat products and their normal forms and get nutritionists Rakhee Todankar and Rachna Chhachhi to give us their opinions.

Rakhee tells us that if losing weight is your highest priority then Slim-nTrim should be your milk of choice. She also assures us that these days, most low-fat milks are fortified with vitamins so you needn’t worry about losing out on nutrition. However, she says that for children and for those for whom weight-loss isn’t a concern, opting for the full-cream variety (Taaza) is preferable.
When we go shopping, we often come across supermarket shelves full of ‘low-fat’ and ‘zerocalorie’ products. But how many calories do you actually save, compared to their normal avatars? Dev Goswami finds out
ChEESE Britannia Slimz cheese slice 40 calories/slice Britannia normal cheese slice 62 calories/slice Calories saved 22 calories
Expert opinion
Considering that you save just 22 calories per slice by opting for the slim version, it is hardly surprising that Rachna tells us you can opt for either of the varieties as long as it’s in moderation. But, she does warn us that you shouldn’t think of slice cheese as a good source of nutrition. She says, “The best calcium source
for children is yogurt; cheese is processed and has preservatives. It should be consumed two-three times a week at the most.”
ChipS lays Baked 138 calories/30g lays Regular 166 calories/30g Calories saved 28 calories
Expert opinion
Both nutritionists are unified in their opinion that chips should be avoided or, at the most, be consumed only once in a while. Rachna explains, “The chemicals and preservatives are the same in both.” Rakhee also warns that even when you’re eating chips rarely, you should keep in mind that baked chips, while lower in calories, are still high in sodium.
Fizzy dRinkS Coca-cola regular 48 calories Coca-cola diet 0.2 calories Calories saved 47.8 calories
Expert opinion
Again, both nutritionists are against having fizzy drinks, regardless of whether they are low-calorie or not. Rachna, in fact, gives us an interesting piece of information, “Both are bad, especially diet soda which has aspartame that is linked to bloating (defeats the purpose if you’re aiming for weight-loss).”
Soup Batchelors Cup-a-Soup 90 calories Batchelors Slim-a-soup about 60 calories (depends on the flavour) Calories saved 30 calories
Expert opinion
Soups are healthy. So, consuming these should be fine, right? No. Rakhee explains, “Soups are only healthy when they are homemade. Packet soups have preservatives and cannot really be called healthy.” However, comparing these two, she says that the Slim-a-Soup, is okay to consume once in a while.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson actually came forward to speak about how she feels because of the syndrome. The syndrome occurs when you’re unable to accept your accomplishments and never think you’re good enough. You think everything you have achieved is either luck, good timing or because people have been nice to you. You also constantly live in the fear that your luck will run out soon and you won’t be able to keep your winning streak going.

While The Imposter Syndrome is not officially recognised as a psychological disorder, it has been discussed in books and articles by experts. It’s been studied as a reaction to situations that prompt such feelings and is treated with cognitive and writing therapy. Here are a few ways to deal with it on your own: aSk around: Dealing with Imposter Syndrome on your own will make you second guess every move you make, so talk to friends, family or a professional if you need to. See the reality: You may go through your entire life feeling as though you’re not good enough if you don’t do this. Make lists of all your skills. Whether it’s your personality, your career skills or even something tiny like being punctual, put it down on the list. This way, you’ll be able to see the good in yourself. give yourSelF a break: Because of how you feel, you could be driven to overcompensate at work or in relationships, which can make you ill. Give yourself a break to pat yourself on the back for your successes and wind down before your next step. accept complimentS: The one thing that you have to learn how to do is take a compliment without second guessing the person’s motives. Don’t drive yourself up the wall wondering what you've done to deserve the compliment. identiFy the Fear: Feeling like you're not good enough can be caused by stress. Sometimes it can be a change in your routine or a big shift in the levels of hierarchy at home or at work. Get to the root cause so that you can single out why you feel this way. work it out: Find and maintain a work-life balance so you feel fulfilled and less stressed about how much more you can put into work. Find connectionS: The more openly you talk about it, the less of an issue it will become. Share experiences to help people who feel the same and let them help you. be Funny: The one thing that all the celebrities who feel this syndrome got right was that they made light of it. Being able to relax, laugh and smile is important. The more uptight you feel, the more intense your problems will become. If you don't enjoy the work you do, find something you do enjoy, which will make you feel less like a 'fake'. be analytical: Take an analytical approach to success. See what you're good at, use logic and fact to count hits and misses. Numbers don't lie and luck can't stretch that far! be happy: You will feel less like an imposter if you fill the shoes you want to instead of trying to live up to someone else's dream. Think about what you want and be a go-getter!

G
lobal enterprise Bayer, which manufactures products and services to benefit people and improve their quality of life, recently organised their Bayer Young Environment Envoy (BYEE) program in the country. The program is in line with the group’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development. The company has been placing great emphasis on promoting science education for young people. Apart from that, the company in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program, organises a number of programs that aim to improve the younger generation’s knowledge and outlook toward the environment.
dEsi CoNNECtioN
23-year-old Vaibhav Pratap and 20year-old Soumyapit Paul are the two young Indians who won the BYEE program that was held earlier this year. As a part of the program, they, along with 48 winners from 18 other countries, will get to visit Germany on a week-long study tour where they will get a first-hand experience of how sustainable environmental practices are pursued jointly by the people, government and industry. The duo will represent India at an environmental summit in Germany. One of the main criterions for judging the BYEE contest was a student’s participation in conducting a hands-on project. Vaibhav, who is pursuing an MS in Research in Electrical Engineering, said, “The goal of my project is to build a low power, low cost device to study soil CO2 variation with seasons, temperature conditions and geographical locations. The findings will be of great importance in the global warming and terrestrial carbon research. BYEE program will provide me an opportunity to understand the existing technologies and practices in environmental protection and monitoring.” The other winner, Soumyajit is pursuing Civil Engineering and his project, TRANS-CONS is about building a light emitting concrete structure that will help save electricity by as much as 35%-40% per year in a particular sector. Apart from the Germany trip, the two winners will also get a chance to submit their project details along with suggestions on how to make them more successful. In the end, three best projects from all the envoys from all the countries will be chosen and Bayer will offer support in the form of materials or technological expertise.
>> By the term ‘bedroom moves,’ we mean yoga moves that you can do on your bed
No, we’re not talking about what you think we’re talking about. Whether you want to squeeze in some exercise or need to relieve yourself of stress, Rhea Dhanbhoora brings you some great yoga poses you can do without leaving the comfort of your bed
Y
ou already know the health benefits yoga has for your mind and body, so we’re not going to go on about that again. But, we are recommending yoga in bed. Why? Contrary to what you’re thinking, this isn’t just an easy way out of your exercise routine. Of yoga’s several benefits, helping you sleep better and kick starting your day while keeping muscle tension at bay, are some reasons why it’s a good idea to practice yoga in bed. Make sure you have a flat mattress and it’s better if your bed is pushed up against a wall. Remember to lie in the corpse pose (with your arms by your side and palms facing upwards) and wind down completely after these poses:
>> The child’s pose helps ease stress
LEGs up!

Children are used to lying down like this, but as an adult, you can do this to ease tension that builds up in your legs. l Turn your hips to the wall. l Raise your legs up so they are resting vertically against the wall. l If you feel any discomfort near your hips, you can cushion them with a pillow. l A complete vertical position is best, but if this is too much of a strain for you, you can move your bottom a little further away from the wall to ease it out. l Rest your palms by your sides and breathe in and out for two minutes.
The Child’s Pose is a calming pose that can help you collect yourself and ease stress. l Sit on a flat, comfortable part of your mattress on your heels. l Bend forward and rest your forehead on the bed. l Make sure your chest is lowered, so it’s as close to your knees as possible. l Extend your arms out besides your head and hold the pose for five minutes.

This pose is also called Pigeon Pose and the intense leg stretch is actually very good to do before you get out of bed in the morning since it revitalises you. Yoga expert Nityara, who is a follower of the Bihar School of Yoga/ Satyanand Yoga is one of the experts who will be holding a workshop at Zabhala, India’s largest yoga and life spirit festival in Goa in December this year. She tells us that she believes simple yoga poses in bed are healthy. She suggests adding the following five poses to your morning routine: padungli Naman: Sit with your legs outstretched and your feet apart. Place your hands beside your buttocks and lean back a little, keeping your spine straight. Move the toes of both your feet backwards and forwards, holding each position for a few seconds, 10 times. Goolf Naman: Sit in the same position as above. Rotate one foot at a time, clockwise from the ankle 10 times and then anti-clockwise 10 times. Then, do the same steps with both ankles at the same time. Make sure that your knees don’t move. skandha Chakra: While sitting, hold your arms out at shoulder level. Move the blades in a circle, first forwards and then backwards. Do this around 10 times. Greeva sanchalan: Sit straight. Slowly rotate your neck clockwise and anti-clockwise, 10 times. shroni Chakra: Sit with your legs outstretched and bend your right knee, picking up your foot and placing it on your left thigh. Holding your knee with one hand and your toe with the other, place your heel near your waist. Rotate your hip joint in a circular motion, gently. Repeat with your other leg.

Medical tourism in India
« KNOW MORE: TOOL TO LOOK ‘INSIDE’ YOUR BONES Dev Goswami tells you about a new tissue diagnostic tool that can help look inside a patient’s bones to help diagnose major illnesses
A
s we age, fractures and bone damage get harder to treat and heal. Studies have shown that suffering from a hip fracture after the age of 65 could be fatal for one out of every four people. However, a new diagnostic tool being developed in collaboration with the UK universities and scientists could put an end to that. The tool uses advanced biomechanical engineering and mathematics to measure how porous a bone is, its connectivity on a microscopic level and to understand how a particular bone tissue manages daily loads. Data is gathered using advanced imaging techniques and can help diagnose weak bones before they the break.
While we thought that the depreciating rupee only spelt doom for us, the cosmetic surgery market in India would beg to differ. Priyanka Singh tells you why India is now a hot spot for medical tourism
W
hile most of us have been cursing the downfall of the rupee in comparison to first world countries, the cosmetic surgery market in India is assuredly having a good time. And this current situation, which has come up as a consequence of the depreciating rupee, has been a boon in the medical business. As the rupee is currently low, patients from abroad are coming to India in order to undergo complex surgeries at affordable rates. A major interest is seen by foreigners who are increasingly making a beeline to India for various cosmetic treatments.
hOW dOEs thIs hElp?
Why IndIa? There are two major reasons why foreigners are choosing India. Firstly, it is no surprise that when it comes to the medical talent in our country, many surgeons and doctors from India are at par with our global, first world counterparts. India has also successfully concluded several complex surgeries in the past. Additionally, the hospitals that provide such surgeries have world-class facilities and are accredited by internationally-recognised institutes. Commenting on the second reason for growing number of foreigners and NRIs flocking to India for cosmetic surgery, Sanjeev Mahajan, CEO, Enhance Clinics — Hair Transplant, Aesthetic Cosmetic surgery & Dermatology clinic, says, “The Indian cosmetic surgery market is not only favoured by cost advantage. The sharp depreciation of the rupee has also provided a helping hand. The cost of healthcare here ranges from a fourth to a tenth of that in advanced countries.” Sanjeev adds that in the last few months, most cosmetic surgeons have witnessed a tremendous growth in the number of queries from foreigners and NRIs. Furthermore, many of these surgeons are also trained abroad, which in turn increases their credibility with clients. Sanjeev adds, “While people from the West come for liposuction, hair transplants, rhinoplasty and neck
>> The depreciating rupee is not all bad news, especially for medical tourism procedures, patients from neighbouring regions such as Nigeria and Africa normally come to correct debilitating conditions, such as eyelid droop and smile surgery.” Among low-cost destinations for cosmetic surgeries, India is competing with countries such as Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.
What Is OBaMaCaRE & hOW dOEs It BEnEfIt IndIa? Dr. Anup Dhir, Senior Cosmetic Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals says, “After the advent of the US Affordable Care Act, popularly known as OBAMACARE, US insurance companies plan to encourage medical tourism. India is poised to become a major beneficiary, given its cost advantage, which has risen significantly with the recent fall in the value of the rupee.” Though cosmetic surgery is not governed by insurance, the trend is already permeating to cosmetic patients as most of the procedures now cost less in dollar terms, involve short stay and is done on fit patients. Dr. Anup points out that most of the patients at present are from SAARC countries, Africa, and West Asia, but tourism from Europe and the USA is also likely to pick up as treatment
costs in India are low. As of now, India has a market share of 3% in global medical tourism and considering the current state of affairs, it is clearly bound to grow.
What aRE thE fIguREs lIkE? According to various estimates, the country attracted close to one million foreign patients last year and the number is going to be significantly higher this year, if one goes by the increase in the number of enquiries made. Apart from other complex surgeries, the demand for cosmetic surgery has witnessed a tremendous growth. The cosmetic surgery market in India is pegged at `240 crore ($52 million) and is growing at 40% per annum. To highlight the cost difference, a rhinoplasty (nose job) costs $10,000 in the US while in India, the corresponding figure is $2,000. Face lifts can put one back by $20,000 in the US, but in India it can again be done at one-fifth of the cost. If we were to give an example of the quote, ‘Every cloud has a silver lining,’ then the scenario of present medical tourism of India would fit the bill.
This tool can help in more than one way — not only will it help doctors come up with a personalised and highly effective treatment plan, it will also lead to better understanding of the bone structure on a microscopic level. This will help pharmaceutical industries to manufacture relevant biological process and develop better drugs to treat as well as prevent fractures. Dr. Yuhang Chen, an expert in computational biomechanics in the School of Engineering & Physical Science at Heriot-Watt University, says, “Our research will help doctors assess the quality and strength of a patient’s bone tissue, leading to more effective and detailed diagnosis of individual conditions, as well as the ability to predict the likelihood of a bone fracture occurring. It will also allow people to live more flexible lifestyles after something such as a hip fracture, which can often be quite debilitating and emotionally stressful.” Dr. Chen is working with scientists from the University of Liverpool, which is heading the project, as well as University of Edinburgh and Durham University. The project is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

ASK OUR BEAUTY EXPERT barbara, our beauty expert, will help Fix your problems
dear barbara, I’ve had an outbreak of... I don’t even know what! They’re tiny pimple-like bumps, that have a white-ish tinge to them, making them look like boils. They’re all over my forehead and the tip of my nose and I’m very embarrassed about them. Is it something serious? Do I need to visit a doctor? — Varsha menon, Colaba dear Varsha, From the way you’ve described them, it seems that you’re suffering from whiteheads. This isn’t very serious and if you take enough care, you can deal with the problem on your own. Apart from washing your face twice a day with mild soap, start applying a normal, anti-acne product that contains a low percentage of benzoyl peroxide. This destroys the bacteria from your pores. You can also apply tea-tree oil to your face as it has been known to fight whiteheads really well and is completely natural. If the whiteheads persist, you should visit a dermatologist who will prescribe oral or topical medication. dear barbara, My daughter has little bumps all over her upper arms. We never gave it much thought but now she complains about how she would like to wear sleeveless tops and she can’t because of these tiny bumps. Can you tell me what these bumps might be and what we can do about it? — shane Fernandes, Versova dear shane, What you are talking about is a condition known as keratosis pilaris. It is a common skin condition wherein tiny bumps appear on the arms and thighs. Health-wise you and your daughter do not need to worry about anything. As far as treating the condition is concerned, it usually goes away on its own. If it doesn’t and persists for a long time, visit a dermatologist who can help you with treatment options. In the mean time, ask your daughter to gently exfoliate the area daily. She can also use over-the-counter skin products that contain lactic acid. The acid removes extra keratin, which is the reason for the bumps.

>> Vibrating mascaras are nothing but a sign of laziness. Avoid them and these other products
CutiCle oil Hand creams are understandable, but cuticle oil? First of all, we don’t get why anyone would want to spend a reasonable amount of money on something that is just for cuticles — a part of your body that usually goes unnoticed unless you go for a manicure or have damaged them in any way. Also, logically speaking, if you do have damaged or split cuticles, oil doesn’t stay put and creams last longer.
eyelash oil We have another pointless oil to add to this list. While we’ve heard of people using castor oil for longer eyelashes, investing in a special eyelash oil to grow longer and thicker lashes is being delusional. Only your genes can bless you with gorgeous eyelashes. And of course, fake ones. We’d say you would be better off investing in those instead of being fooled by false claims.
Vagina whitening produCts >> Exfoliate regularly so that you can flaunt your arms
Who can forget the social media furore that rose out of the vagina brightening wash advertisements that appeared on air last year? As if that wasn’t outrageous
enough, we were horrified to come across vaginal and anal bleaching brands as well. We really don’t want to spell it out for you, but nobody cares if it’s ‘bright’ enough or not down there. That doesn’t do the trick.
Vibrating masCaras There are a few beauty brands which offer vibrating mascaras. The elastomer brush vibrates while you’re applying mascara to provide your lashes with clump-free definition. If you use it or are thinking of buying one after reading about it, we have just one thing to say — don’t be lazy and figure out how to apply mascara normally.
Foot masks “I can’t walk because I have a foot mask on my feet.” While that can be one of the many excuses you use to ditch your friends, don’t turn this pretext into a reality. Invest in a pumice stone to slough off the dead skin from your feet and you’ll be ready to show off your bare feet without this ridiculous product.
lip exFoliators Trust beauty companies to increase their revenue with the most inane products.
Most of these lip exfoliator products are made of sugar and oil to that helps slough away dry skin from your lips. We’d just like to drop a revelation here: lips exfoliate themselves. There’s no need to use exfoliating products on them. Need we say more about the redundancy of this product?
body Firming lotions Plainly put, buy nothing that mentions ‘cellulite removal’. None of these creams firm your body or reduce cellulite in the long run. These products often contain caffeine to improve blood flow or plant extracts to hydrate skin, which may temporarily work, but hitting the gym and eating right are the only remedies that actually get results.
bedazzled eyebrows by Chanel Dear Chanel, with this bedazzled range of eyebrows, you broke the myth that everything that you introduce is aweinspiring. The eyebrows are described as “gem-adorned rectangular pieces of mesh glued on using a prosthetic adhesive.” Spare us the horror of describing at length the superfluity of these eyebrows. Please. YDERABAD/ VIZIANAGARAM: Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh today continued to simmer with protests against the proposed bifurcation of the state as curfew remained in place in restive Vizianagaram town and large areas plunged into darkness with electricity employees on strike. Roiling since the Union Cabinet’s October 3 decision to carve out a new state of Telangana, Vizianagaram is under curfew since Saturday night following large-scale violence. “The situation is under control and peaceful. It (curfew) is continu-
ing. We will again study the situation and take appropriate action,” DIG (Visakhapatnam Range) P Umapathi told PTI. Police have so far arrested 34 persons in connection with the violence and more arrests are likely. Central paramilitary forces and state police are patrolling Kanyakaparameswari temple junction, Kothapeta, Dasannapeta, Gajularega, BC Colony, V.K. Agraharam and other parts of the town to prevent any fresh outbreak of violence. The Seemandhra region as also Hyderabad was reeling under a power crisis with employees of state’s electricity generation, transmission
and distribution companies on an indefinite strike since Sunday. The strike has forced cancellation of several trains. According to Power System Operation Corporation of Power Grid figures, as many as three transmission lines of 400 KV and another two lines of 400/220 KV had tripped due to the agitations in Seemandhra region. Hardly 2,990 MW thermal power was produced as against the installed capacity of 6,090 MW. Similarly, power from the hydel generation stood at 1,694 MW against the installed capacity of 3,937 MW. Several gas-based power plants are also not functioning due to gas shortage.

RINAGAR: A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from Keran sector along the Line of Control in Kashmir valley on Monday, even as the operation against militants holed up there entered the 14th day. “We conducted search operations in the sector and recovered war-like stores of arms and ammunition,” Officiating Brigadier General Staff (BGS) Col Sanjay Mitra told PTI. He said the recoveries include seven AK 47 rifles, four pistols, one sniper rifle, 20 UBGL grenades, two radio-sets and other war-like stores. Some medicines and food items were also recovered, he said. Army had on Sunday recovered
six AK rifles, 10 pistols, five radiosets and other items after the search operations in the sector, Col Mitra said. “The level of preparedness by the terrorists prior to these attempts and their designs are amply clear with recoveries,” he said. The Army launched a massive anti-infiltration operation in Shalbhatti village in Keran Sector on September 24 after noticing a group of 30 to 40 militants trying to sneak into the Valley. The operation, for the 14th day today, is on in a vast area along the LoC and so far seven militants have been killed — three in Gujjardoor village on Friday and four in Fateh Gali area of the sector Saturday.

HMEDABAD: Parents of two children who were found dead on the banks of Sabarmati river near Asaram’s Ashram in Motera here in July 2008, have reiterated their demand for a CBI probe into the death of their children. “We had said this earlier also. We want a CBI probe into the deaths of the two children in the Ashram. The Gujarat police has failed to make any headway into the case even after five years,” Shanti Vaghela, the father of the dead children, Abhishek Vaghela, told PTI. Parents of two children, along with other parents, whose children went missing staged a sit-in protest on Monday near the Income-Tax Circle here. Cousins Dipesh Vaghela (10) and Abhishek Vaghela (11) went missing from Asaram Bapu’s gurukul, a residential school, on July 3, 2008 under mysterious circumstances. On July 5, 2008, mutilated bodies of the two boys were found in the
riverbed near the ashram. After the two boys were found dead, there was a widespread public agitation against the ashram, with allegations that their deaths were linked to black magic practised in the ashram. “Had the Gujarat police acted like the Rajasthan police, Asaram and his son would not have indulged in acts of sexual exploitation,” Abhishek’s father said. He claimed that they had met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in August 2008 and demanded a CBI probe into the deaths of their children. “Modi had told us that the Gujarat police is capable of bringing the culprits to book and there was no need to hand over the case to the CBI,” Shanti said. “Five years have passed since the death of Dipesh and Abhishek. Their death is still a mystery. No one has been caught so far and no action has been taken against anyone,” Dipesh’s father Praful Vaghela said.

Investment Rationale: Robust business model suitable for related diversification EIL has worked on major projects, including several landmark assignments and has established brand through extensive engineering and project execution work in hydrocarbon space. Strong dedicated R&D centres helps to keep up to date with latest technology and processes. EIL holds 13 patents with 16 pending patent applications for various process technologies and hardware. Employee strength grew from 2804 in FY08 to 3379 in FY13 despite difficult market conditions. EIL leverages Integrated EPC and project management capabilities and knowledge to better evaluate potential projects and assess project skills. EIL is identifying new business model in existing markets such as Open Book Estimate (OBE). Conclusion: EIL incorporated in 1965 has over the years developed a track record of working on landmark projects with various Indian and global energy majors. As of March 31, 2013, EIL has provided a range of engineering consultancy and project implementation services on several refinery projects, including 10 greenfield refinery projects, 7 petrochemical complexes, 37 oil and gas processing projects, over 40 offshore process platforms, besides associated well platforms, 42 pipeline projects, 13 ports and storage and terminals projects, 8 fertilizer projects and 29 mining and metallurgy projects. Several key developments in the customer segments of EIL augur well for EIL. However the impact of these could be felt after the current capex slowdown scenario is over (hopefully by Q4FY14). The new urea policy should help improve investments in the sector, as gas pricing would be a pass through. However, this would result in an increase in the subsidy burden for the government and contrary to the government’s efforts to reduce its subsidy burden. Therefore, public sector fertiliser companies NFL, IFFCO, RCF could go ahead with setting up new plants while the private sector players would be a little more circumspect. EIL is not pre qualified to bid for fertilizer plants and would need to tie up with a foreign vendor for the same. EIL has the competitiveness and flexibility to bid competitively against Indian and international peers for hydrocarbon contracts (awarded on lowest-cost basis), thanks to the company’s strong balance sheet (no leverage), cash flow generation profile, large talent pool and government relationships Near-term catalysts for the stock will be the possible large dividend payouts ahead of the follow-on public offering (FPO). EIL also secured a lump sum turnkey contract (LSTK) worth over Rs 670 crore from CPCL for Residuary Up gradation Project (Coker Block) in Aug 2013. This coker unit will convert residual oil in the refinery into fuel. We feel investors could buy the stock at CMP and add on dips to Rs.139-149 band (7-7.5xFY15E EPS) for a target of Rs.220 (11.1xFY15E EPS) in 1-2 quarters.

E&P uncertainty: News flow about RIL’s E&P business—around the gas price increase, cost recovery and acreage relinquishment—seems to have taken a turn for the worse recently. This masks the material operational progress made at D6 over the past year. In addition, these uncertainties, if unresolved, could reduce the valuation of RIL’s E&P business, but not by much. If there was no more capex at D6 and gas prices remained at US$4.2/mmbtu, we would lose Rs79/share from our NAV estimate of Rs1,044 (at USDINR of 62). This would still leave us with 13% potential upside. In this note, we look at various regulatory issues with RIL’s E&P assets and work through valuation sensitivities. Core upside intact: We like RIL for EBITDA growth as we expect its ongoing chemical capex programme to deliver. On (almost) flat margin assumptions, RIL EBITDA should grow from US$5.7 bn in FY14 to US$9.7 bn by FY17, even if issues at D6 remain unresolved. Weak rupee should counter weak refining: Singapore Reuters complex margin was down US$1.2/bbl QoQ in 2Q FY14, although AL-AH has expanded US$0.2/bbl. Combined with a weaker rupee, we estimate RIL will deliver 23% QoQ earnings growth in 2Q. We believe some supply discipline should help its GRM recover in the near term. Valuation looks attractive: We believe RIL’s chemical and refining businesses trade at 7.2x FY15E EBITDA. This is broadly in line with that of its regional peers, and we believe RIL’s stock is not expensive. These numbers also do not build in any volume growth, which then could be the mediumterm upside. We leave our E&P estimates unchanged (US$7.5/mmbtu in FY15E and beyond) but use USDINR of Rs62. Our target price increases to Rs 1,044 (from Rs 1,031) and FY14/15E EPS decreases 3%/1%. Maintain OUTPERFORM.

Corporates Credit Quality On Slippery Wicket? By A Business Reporter

n analysis on 2,481 firms, CRISIL rated BBB- and above indicates that a fourth of these firms were highly vulnerable to demand slowdown and a sixth to liquidity constraints. CRISIL’s credit ratio — or the proportion of upgrades to downgrades — for the first half of the current fiscal ended September 30 has come in at 0.87 times. The ratio has stayed under 1 for the last two years. This time around, there were 478 downgrades to 417 upgrades. As much as
FTIL Gets FMC Notice By A Business Reporter
F
BUSINESS
inancial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL), the promoter of crisis-hit NSEL, has received a show-cause notice on October 5 from commodity market regulator FMC regarding its ‘fit and proper’ status as a shareholder in MCX. In a filing to the BSE, FTIL said that “the company has received a show cause notice on October 05, 2013, from Forward Markets Commission (FMC) on the status of the company as “Fit and Proper Person as a shareholder in MCX. The company would reply to the show cause notice suitably in due course of time, it added. Sources had earlier said that FMC has issued show cause notices to Jignesh Shah, founder of FTIL, and three other officials following the NSEL payment crisis, asking why they should be considered ‘fit and proper’ to operate group company Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX).FMC issued the notices to four officials, including Shah, Shreekant Javalgekar, MCX Managing Director and CEO, and Joseph Massey, MCX Stock Exchange Managing Director and CEO. The officials have been asked to reply within two weeks, the sources had said.
86 per cent of the downgrades were due to demand slowdown and stretch in liquidity (caused by delays in receivables). CRISIL believes these problems, along with high interest rates, mean credit quality of corporates will remain weak in the near term. Mr. Ramraj Pai, President, CRISIL Ratings, said: “Despite the tough economic environment, we continue to see rating upgrades. Almost 40 per cent of the upgrades were driven by firm specific factors such as satisfactory track record of timely debt servicing by firms that were previously rated default grade, and an improvement in capital structure following higher-than anticipated equity infusions or reduction in debt, he said. “Another 25 per cent, he pointed out, “was due to better business conditions for firms that are not dependent on investment demand such as textiles, agricultural products and packaged foods sectors. These sectors witnessed the highest upgrade rates. “Working capital management emerged as a clear differentiator of credit quality. Firms with longer working capital cycles – or gross current assets (GCA) exceeding 240 days of sales - have witnessed twice the number of downgrades compared with upgrades, Mr. Pai highlighted. “On the other hand, firms with prudent working capital management, as indicated by low GCAs of less than 120 days of sales, witnessed more upgrades than downgrades, he added. Power, road transport and construction sectors had the highest downgrade rates. Asset quality of banks would reflect the weakness in the external environment. Says Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings: “We expect the gross non-performing assets (NPAs) to increase sharply by 110 basis points to 4.4 per cent of gross advances by the end of this fiscal, up sharply from 3.3 per cent last year. Furthermore,
systemic weak assets are likely to rise by 140 basis points to 5.7 per cent of gross advances by the end of this fiscal, a significant increase over last year’s 4.3 per cent. Weak assets are defined as gross nonperforming assets (NPAs) plus 30 per cent of restructured standard assets (RSAs), excluding those of state power utilities. CRISIL believes 30 per cent of RSAs have a high chance of slipping into NPAs over the next two years on account of the L-shaped economic growth trajectory expected. Going forward, demand and adequacy of funding will drive credit quality of companies. CRISIL believes downgrades will continue to outnumber upgrades over the near term, and intensity of downgrades may even increase.

Mutual Funds Pull Out Rs 2,800 Crore From Stocks In Sept
Mutual funds offloaded shares worth Rs 2,800 crore in September after pumping in money in the preceding month. The net inflow of funds in August was Rs 1,607 crore, as per data with market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Mutual funds have sold more than Rs 9,000 crore of shares since the beginning of the year (January-September). In comparison, foreign institutional investors made a net inflow of more than Rs 13,000 crore in equities in September, after withdrawing a net amount of over Rs 16,000 crore in the preceding month.
Disclose Interest While Giving Investment Advice
Overseas investors coming through Sebi’s newly created FPI route would need to disclose their direct and indirect interest in any securities about which they make public any investment advice. While ushering in easier entry norms and operational framework for the overseas entities seeking to invest in Indian capital markets, the proposed regulations for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) also provide for strong checks and balances against any market manipulation or fraudulent activities.
Govt Mulls New Corp For Overseas Buyouts, Fund Mop Up
The government is mulling a new corporation, to be set up by pooling the funds from cash-rich public sector enterprises, for acquiring overseas assets as well as raising money abroad. O commemorate the successful completion of 20 years Nrityanjli Dance Academy, Thane, the academy presented a unique programme, Antaranga, at the Kashinath Ghanekar auditorim in Thane on Sunday. The highlight of the programme was the portrayal of the divine male concept known as Shivoham and the female concept in Narmada Har Har. Sivoham portrayed the lord of dance known as Nataraja, the personification of the male and the female energy known as Ardhanarishwara and as the Lord of creation, preservation and destruction. The dances commenced with Mallari, followed by Gajavadana, Ranjani, Tandava Darshanam, Varugamolo and the finale Thillana. All items revolved around the presiding deity of Indian dance, Lord Nataraja. While Ranjani described the female consort of Lord Shiva, Tandava Darshanam described the magnificent cosmic dance of Lord Shiva performed well by Siddhi and Amruta, senior disciples of Guru Lata Rajesh of Nrtyanjli. It was a
pleasure to watch Lata Rajesh perform Varugamolo Ayyo wherein the nayika feels low due to the absence of her Lord. This number was executed with commendable ‘abhinaya’ pertaining to the pathos and the ‘viraha’ of the heroine. Lata Rajesh deserves to be seen more often on the platform circuit. The senior disciples of Guru Lata Rajesh who performed with lot of involvement and enthusiasm were Amruta, Siddhi, Anu-

HE ‘Khayal Trust’ has been holding a holding a music festival of women musicians for about a decade. It is very rare to find a woman tabla player, that too someone who can hold her own while accompanying a singer or an instrumentalist. ‘Khayal Trust’ festival has brought to limelight tabla players like Mukta Raste and Sanjeevani Hajarnis. Anuradha Pal and Hetal Mehta are already established as percussion musicians. ‘Iyer Foundation’, another leading cultural outfit from the city also had the distinction of holding a festival of women singers last weekend. It was aptly titled ‘Sadhana’ and was held at the sprawling and swanky Savarkar Auditorium at Shivaji Park. Purvi Parikh, Jyoti Iyer, Sonal Shivkumar, Shruti Sadolikar, Padma Talwalkar and Aarti Ankalikar were the women singers featured at this festival sponsored by Central Bank of India and Union Bank of India. A good audience cheered and encouraged the women singers who have put in years of dedicated practice to achieve a certain degree of perfection. Purvi Parikh belongs to the Kirana gharana. Her parents, Sitarist Arvind Parikh and
pama, Preeti and Gayatri. It was a pleasure and a visual delight to watch the dancers performing the Kanada Thillana with fine synchronisation and technical command for which the credit goes to the mentor. The team received fine orchestral support from Arun Gopinath for brilliant vocal, Kaliswaran for Nattuvangam, Kiran Gopinath for Mridangam and Violin by Anatharaman. Among the most talented Bharata Natyam male dancers in the city is Vaibhav Arekar. Vaibhav Arekar presented a dramatic portrayal of the river Narmada in the dance produc-
tion Narmada Har Har. Believed to be born out of the perspiration of Lord Shiva as he danced Nataraja Swarupa, Narmada is depicted in varied stages of the growth of womanhood and the devotee elicits varied stories pertaining to the history and geography of the mother river. Although a solo performer, Vaibhav succeeds in taking the audience to the journey that takes you closer to the river and the significance pertaining to both man and nature is picturised with dramatic quality. On a whole, it was a fine festival with devoted performers.

snatch moments of peaceful sleep because the image of the Lord has taken complete possession of her senses. Purvi sang it in the typical Niyaz Ahmed Khan fashion. The drut ‘Aayee Ri Albeli’ makes use of an ascending note ‘R’ in the upper octave. Purvi also sang the Raga Jhinjoti which is more played that sung. Anutosh on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium lent a superb support. Jyoti Iyer belongs to both Gwalher and Jaipur gharana. She follows the Kishori Amonkar style of elaboration. She sang the Raga Yaman with spirit. Padma Talwalkar also sang the sane raga in a different session. Her bandish ‘Kahe Sakhi Kaise Kariye’ was set to a medium tempo eleven beat Ek Taal which had an easy pace. The dialogue between two women friends is nicely depicted in this composition. Shruti Sadollikar was Vocalist Kishori Parikh, nurtured her in the her usual self and Aarti Ankalikar was in Kirana tradition and she was further great form. Sonal Shivkumar is a comparagroomed by the late Niyaz Ahmed Khan who tively new entrant to the arena. Yet she was was a foremost singer from the gharana. ‘Ramchandra Purushottam Joshi,’ a good satire T
By Sandeep Hattangadi
HE story of the film is a bit different from the humdrum and that’s what it makes it watchable because of the deft direction of the talented Ajay Phansekar and the lead actor Dilip Prabhavalkar who is on a high after the success of Narsobachi Vaadi. Though the film is adapted from the Rajendra Kumar hit film Jhuk Gaya Aasman, it is watchable. Ramchandra Purushottam Joshi (Dilip Prabhavalakar) is a simple middle class government servant and a family man leading a contended life with his wife (Suhas Joshi), two sons (Vikas Kadam etc.), their wives and grandchildren. But one day Joshi suddenly dies leaving his family
distraught. In heaven, Lord Yama, the God of Death, realises that he has brought the wrong dead person, all hell breaks loose and Lord Yama has to send Joshi to earth on account of his good behavior albeit in the soul of another person and then Joshi realises what all is happening after his death in the family. His children are fighting with each other for his house and wealth and not taking care of his wife. The situations are filled with satirical comedy and have the viewers laughing heartily. The film makes good viewing because of performers like Dilip Prabhavalkar, Suhas Joshi, Vikas Kadam, Ajay Phansekar, Deepak Shirke, Sheetal Ksheersagar, Rajan Tamhane etc. The special effects are good though there is no scope for music.

Poignant play
Salim Arif’s Kharashein (based on Gulzar saab’s writings on communal riots) was staged at Prithvi to a packed audience. The play in its 12th year is still the most popular of Salim Arif’s theater production Essay Communications. First staged in 2001, Kharashein has become the flagship play of Salim Arif’s theater group and is met with a warm response whenever it is staged anywhere in the country. The star cast including Atul Kulkarni & Lubna Salim has been associated with the play since its inception. Atul Kulkarni was heard saying, “There is a tinge of sadness in me as I prepare myself to go on stage for the 12th year in a row for Kharaashein. As the play is based on communal disharmony, I would have been happy if it wasn’t so relevant in today’s times. In fact, I would have been happier if we had to stop staging the play, because it had lost its relevance in today’s times”.

EW DELHI: After guiding Mumbai Indians to their second Champions League T20 title, skipper Rohit Sharma said he is ready to open innings in all three formats of the game and that he has been waiting for the opportunity for the last six years. "Modern cricket is such that you cannot lock your place. I am ready for last six years to play in all three formats. Hopefully, I will get an opportunity soon," Sharma said at the post-match press conference after Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs in the final of the CLT20 here last night. "I am waiting for the Test cap and hopefully I'll get it soon. I am waiting for the right time and opportunity," he said. A freak injury just before the Nagpur Test in 2010 had delayed his Test debut but with the West Indies tour round the corner, Sharma would be hoping to finally get to play the traditional format. In February 2010, Sharma was set to make his Test debut against South Africa but he injured himself while playing football in the warm-up on the first morning of the match. He was also part of the squad for the third Test at home against the West Indies in November 2011 and the four-Test Australia series in 2011-12 but could not make the playing XI. Sharma capped off an impressive T20 season as a skipper by securing second trophy in a year after winning the Indian Premier League season 6 in May and the Mumbai player admitted there were a lot of expectations from them. "It wasn't easy for us. There were a lot of expectations and I think we held our nerve well. We showed a lot of character in the tournament," he said. Sharma said he was never wor-

brought us back into the game. His three wickets in an over proved crucial for us," Sharma said. "Glenn Maxwell also played a great knock. It was a crucial knock as he timed his shots to perfection. We knew his strength, and that is why drafted him in the side. For Rajasthan, Sanju Samson and Ajju [Ajinkya Rahane] really played very well," Sharma said of the Australian who blasted a 14ball 37. Sharma, however, insisted the match was not decided in one or two overs. "I don't think that way. This match was not decided in one or two overs. On a wicket like this and in final where we scored 200 plus runs, we were always in the match. We scored some 140 plus runs in the last 10 overs. The track was flat, there was dew factor. I feel all 40 overs mattered here." Sharma said he has always believed in leading from the front just like his Indian team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "When you play well, then you inspire your team. I have got good support from my teammates, we have a good understanding. I like to take the charge and lead from the front. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done it so many times by leading from the front. He has inspired people by his own performance," he said. Talking about the upcoming series against Australia where each fielding team will be given two new balls to be used in alternate overs, one at each end, Sharma said it would make the job of openers a lot more responsible to provide the team with a good start. "It wouldn't be a problem for me. It's important for openers like Shikhar (Dhawan) and me to provide our team with a good start and lay a strong platform for other batsmen. However, it would restrict certain shots that you play. We will adjust to it," he said.

Tendulkar hints at future role in MI
NEW DELHI: He might have played his last Twenty20 game in the Champions League with Mumbai Indians, but Sachin Tendulkar has dropped hints that he could be part of MI team management in the next IPL season. Asked if he could be sitting in the MI dugout in some other role, Tendulkar said, "As of now, I don't know. We've just won this tournament and I want to enjoy this moment. There are still good six months (before the next IPL) and I am sure something will come along till then. I am actually looking forward to the next season because I have been part of MI for six years now and it has been an experience I have really enjoyed," he was quoted as saying by the official CLT20 website. He said winning the IPL and CLT20 made him feel that he has accomplished his dreams. "Wonderful! To win the IPL and then the CLT20 in the same year is a special thing. When the IPL season started, we wanted to win it so bad. The team has done beautifully since then and the end result has been fantastic," said the 40-year-old who is set to reach another milestone of playing 200 Tests soon.
Former players call life ban recommendation on Jwala harsh N
EW DELHI: Throwing their weight behind an embattled Jwala Gutta, several former players have described the Badminton Association of India disciplinary committee's recommendation of a life ban on the star doubles player as "ridiculous and harsh". "It is a very harsh decision. I think BAI could have dealt with it in a quieter way and not go to the press and defame her in this way," former national champion Arvind Bhat told PTI. "I don't know exactly what she said during the IBL match but whatever it is, life ban recommendation is too harsh. They could have just warned her. Moreover, she is the spokesperson of the Delhi team and as an icon player, she spoke on behalf of her team. It was a team decision." In a surprise decision, the Badminton Association of India's disciplinary committee recommended a life ban on Jwala for trying to stop some players of her franchise Krrish Delhi Smashers from playing a
match against Banga Beats in the recent Indian Badminton League. India's top men's doubles players K T Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas, who played for Pune Pistons in the inaugural IBL, also said it was ridiculous and will affect Indian badminton. "It is ridiculous. Life
ban is too much. Whatever delay happened in the match, I don't think Jwala is the only person who has to suffer for that. It was kind of unfair what happened at the last moment. Naturally, anyone who would have been in her place would have reacted," Rupesh said. "It is a call which Jwala alone could not have taken, the franchise must have told her. It is weird why this matter has been taken to such an extent. Life ban doesn't make sense. It has been blown out of proportion," he added. His men's doubles partner Sanave Thomas said: "I don't agree with this recommendation of life ban. I think she is such an experienced player, who has performed consistently over the years. Along with V Diju and Ashwini Ponnappa, she has pulled off so many matches for India and life ban will be too harsh. "Even if it is not a life ban and a six-month suspension then also it would be harsh," Thomas added. A controversy had erupted during
the August 25 tie when Delhi Smashers threatened to pull out against Banga Beats over the lastminute replacement of injured singles player, Hu Yun of Hong Kong with Denmark's Jan Jorgensen. As an icon player of Delhi Smashers, Jwala was involved in the matter, which was resolved after Beats finally left out Jorgensen and played Arvind Bhat, who was already part of the team. Jwala was then served a 14-day show cause notice by BAI for her conduct during the tie, which was delayed by half an hour. According to insiders, who are in the know of events, it is not about the IBL match only, the recommendation shows BAI's vindictive nature and Jwala has been targetted for her past outburst against the BAI. "IBL match is not the main issue. There are other things. Not everything is hunky dory in Indian badminton. There are people who are not happy with Jwala partnering Ashwini again and BAI is threatening her with a life ban to teach her a lesson," a source said.
Mumbai Indians Sachin Tendulkar celebrates with teammates after winning final of the CLT20 against Rajasthan Royals at the Ferozshah Kotla stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. "The dream was to be part of the No.1 Test team in the world, then win the World Cup, the IPL and the CLT20. All those dreams have been accomplished now," he added. Tendulkar holds almost all the cricket records, including the highest run-getter in both Tests and ODIs and highest number of centuries and during the CLT20, he also became the first Indian to complete 50,000 runs across all formats. Asked about this milestone, Tendulkar said he had not thought much about it and that it came as a surprise to him.
BAILEY & HIS ‘POLITE’ CO.

M
UMBAI: Australian standin skipper George Bailey has landed from the southern hemisphere with a mindset not really ‘Australian’. Unlike the previous Aussie skippers who always had words of wisdom for the host country, Bailey said his was a polite side, which is totally averse to their confrontational approach as seen in the past time and again. Players like Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath used to predict the number of victories prior to the beginning of the series. However, the Tasmanian born Bailey said that they are a very ‘polite’ side and added that there still would be certain individuals who would indulge in certain predictions. “We are very polite. I still think around the world you still see certain individuals make those predictions. That was a way they [Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath] challenged themselves. That was a way they got themselves fired up for the series. This group doesn’t need to do that, we have got enough challenges and certainly don’t probably have the superstars of the like of Shane Warne or Glenn McGrath. We don’t rely heavily on any one or two players. If we are going to play good one day cricket, if we win this series, we will need all 13 or 14 of us to play really well,” said Bailey who is standing in for the injured Michael Clarke during an interaction at the Cricket Club of India on Monday. Australia who is in India to play a lone T20 match against India in Pune on this Thursday which is to be followed by seven one-day internationals said the conversations now will be more friendlier since many of the Australian have been rubbing shoulders with the Indian cricketers during the Indian Premier League and also in the Champions League. He added that he wasn’t sure whether the bat

and ball would speak during the series. “Not sure. I don’t know. Depends on how it plays out there. Back to IPL and CL, players know each other so well, so we are really close friends that are playing
against each other now. In the past, they did not know each other well. And now if there is a talk, it can be friendlier.” The 31-year-old skipper and Australia coach Steve Rixon have both been part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise have looked at the Indian team from close quarters including Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. However, despite that Rixon, who was the fielding coach in the Chennai based franchise said that the difference would be in combating the Indian players. “It is not just about knowing the players but also knowing how to combat those players. Having been involved in Champions League, we have seen the likes of Suresh Raina, the way he is play-
ing. We have seen the likes of Dhoni, the way he is playing and also Ashwin. We still have to be able to combat that. We have got a plenty of hard work to do. The advantage George rightly said we have got to see them regularly now. We have got more chance of actually combating that,” said Rixon. On Ian Chappell’s remarks of Australia’s ill timed tour to India, Bailey said his comments don’t have any relevance as he hasn’t been involved with their cricket for a while. “Don’t think his comments have any bearing on the team. Don’t think he has been involved with the Australian team for a very very long time. Not sure his comments have particular relevance to this series,” added Bailey.

ADRID: Diego Costa made up for the disappointment of his non-inclusion in the Spain squad by scoring twice as Atletico Madrid made it eight wins from eight league games with a 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo. The Brazilian-born striker was not included in Vicente del Bosque's squad on Friday as the paperwork that will make him eligible for the world champions was not completed in time. However, he again made his case for a future call up with another two strikes to take him top of the La Liga scoring charts with 10 goals, two ahead of Lionel Messi. It could have been even better for Costa had he not seen a firsthalf penalty saved by Yoel Rodriguez. He made amends just before half-time by tapping home from Filipe Luis' cross and then drove home a second 17 minutes after the break. Nolito's cute finish 19 minutes from time made it a nervy finish for Diego Simeone's men, but they held on to move level with Barcelona on 24 points at the top of the table, five points ahead of neighbours Real Madrid. "The first-half was very complete, but we just needed the goal," said Simeone. "With complete territorial dominance and when you are playing well offensively the important thing is to finish your chances. We didn't do that and therefore we found ourselves in difficulty near the end." The Argentine denied that his side had suffered physically in the final quarter after two demanding games against Real Madrid
