...Now for today’s headlines... Not a single molestation or rape has taken place in the state today!

hy is Reliance being given so much liberty? They do not stick to their promises at all. Earlier, they had committed that they will develop Amazing Park and then said that they would construct the Thane-Belapur Road, install CCTVs, etc. However, none of the promises have been fulfilled. The NMMC is giving them freedom to do whatever they like,” alleged NCP corporator Shivram Patil, while strongly objecting to Reliance’s 4G towers proposal at the NMMC general body meeting yesterday. Blood-on-Call service hit by glitches on first day By Shwetha Kannan

O

nly a day after its state wide launch, the ‘Jeevan Amrut Seva' or 'Blood-on-Call' was hit by technical glitches. A patient (identity withheld on request) who is admitted in a well known private hospital in the city was in need of five units of blood on Wednesday, and despite the Blood- on-Call facility being available, his friends had to use Short Messaging Services (SMS), What-

by Dr. Prem Gupta (9820045774/9930318119, www.drpremgupta.com)

sApp and social media to make arrangements for blood for him, as they couldn’t get through the toll free number 104. “One of my friends tried calling 104 but it was constantly busy. So we continued using WhatsApp and Facebook to arrange for blood donors. I tried calling the number from my mobile and received a response stating ‘You are not allowed to call this number’. Finally, we managed to arrange for donors through friends, internet sites and

other networks. The 104 number was of no help to us,” said Nishant Chavan, the patient’s friend. According to Nishant, this kind of a start for an initiative which has been publicised so much and is meant to help people in distress, is disheartening. “The initiative has been just launched and if it doesn’t come handy when required, what is the point? If there are technical glitches, they should be ironed out as soon as possible,” said Chavan.

When contacted, Dr. Sanjay Jadhav, Assistant Director, Maharashtra State Blood Transfusion Council said, “There was a flood of calls because it was the first day of the initiative. People were calling up to get information about the service and thus leading to the lines being jammed. I will speak to the technical team for a solution. We will increase the number of lines from the current 10 for the toll free number as and when required.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

About Alka aunty and little Alok

AS a city, still coping with numerous instances of rapes and murders, waited with bated breath to hear about the fate of actress Alka Punekar, missing since December 27, we cannot help but be relieved with the tragicomic anticlimax of her surfacing 10 days later in Chennai, safe and unsound, haranguing the staff of an all-women police station about not wanting to return to her husband and children in Thane. We hear she was promptly carted off to a shelter run by a Catholic institution, where the holy sisters must have prayerfully pleaded that all this was nun of their business, as they waited for Mumbai police to come and take charge of, what now makes her, the runaway wife. Her's was a plot gone hopelessly wrong from the start, right from staging what she thought would pass off as her kidnapping and killing, getting her car chucked down a mountain slope, to tossing her cellphone a little away from where the vehicle was dropped. The dramatis personae are Alka, 48, her beau Alok Paliwal, 24, and his friend. Our hearts, however, go out to her ex-Air Force officer husband, who unwittingly drove her to her assignation, her 17-year-old twins (a girl and a boy), and also her 25 year-old daughter from her first marriage, all reluctant players in this messy tangle. It emerges that Alka had cottoned on to Alok when he was just 20 via a social networking site, and kept her marriage nicely going, while traipsing away every once in a while to Bangalore and God knows where, to spend quality time with him. The police are not sure what charges they | can press. We too don't know how this drama will ultimately play out, but given her pedigree, there is every chance that little Alok will have ditched her sooner or later.

Locked in their towers

THE rich and the beautiful living it up in the high-rises located around the Arthur Road Jail can no more lead the high life on their terraces. As per the profiling, they are always on the rooftops, with canapes and ice clinking in their glasses. Well, the police are playing party poopers. And if you don't know about Arthur Road Jail, all sorts of dangerous people, like gangsters, rapists, terrorists, other assorted criminals and cops are lodged, working, or operating from there. Somebody may try to spoil it all from one of the terraces, so the police authorities have saying no to

partying up there. Like a good sniper cannot scope from any of the windows to take out his target from the jail premises. You now cannot blow kisses to an innocent trapped in there from any balcony or passage of your posh tower. We understand, appreciate and endorse the idea for maximum security. But given the approachability of the friendly neighbourhood Mumbai cop (they even dance at gangsters' parties), any one wanting to get up close and personal with someone inside Arthur Road Jail can probably just knock on the front door and deliver his message.

Life giver

Suresh Revankar (centre) who has saved 53 lives till date, being felicitated by Eknath Shinde (right) and Thane Mayor Harishchandra Patil.

A file picture of the kind of panoramic view available from a skyscraper.

HE is one-in-a-thousand born with a rare blood group, O Negative. He lives with a mission, to make this rarely available blood available for those who need it. Over the years, Suresh Revankar has been donating his invaluable gift and, till date, has saved 53 lives. His dedication has not gone unnoticed quite, and at a special programme, Legislator Eknath Shinde and Thane Mayor Harishchandra Patil honoured Revankar with the 'Rakta Karna' award at the stroke of midnight on January 1.

Ever since he was in college, after listening to his professors speak at a blood donation camp, and realising that his blood group was indeed rare, Revankar has been enthusiasticly donating blood. However, he was advised by a doctor to donate only on call. Revankar has, along with his friends, started a campaign on blood donation, where he talks to people about the importance of donating blood. He wishes to save at least one hundred lives with his own blood. We hope he succeeds in this noble mission, and more.

After rounds of sustained interrogation, Mandal confessed to the crime. – Suresh Golani

Reliance’s 4G towers in Navi Mumbai opposed Continued from pg 1 « by Reliance but a final decision has not been taken yet as the views from the IIT experts will also be considered”. He further said, “The Department of Telecommunications issued a license to Reliance and opinions from the experts in this field have been taken. There will thus be no compromise on the radiation level”. Patil however continued to oppose the idea stating that the satellite city already had 800 towers. Adding another 126 4G towers would put the city at a loss. “These towers will be erected at public gardens, playgrounds, island junctions and dividers on the main road. Towers placed in such places can be dangerous as these places are always crowded”, he said. Mayor Sagar Naik however said that a final call be taken after considering all aspects. Patil’s demand that Naik take suggestions over this issue was turned down by the Mayor. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

His wife allegedly helped him rape the three girls by coercing and threatening them

By Zuber Ansari

A

37-year-old man was arrested by Oshiwara police for allegedly raping three of his nieces in the last one year at his residence with help from his wife who forced the girls to have sex with her husband. The wife too was arrested in the case. The three girls are minors and belong to a poor family. Before landing up at their uncle’s residence in Oshiwara, they resided with their family in Malwani. The three began to stay at the uncle’s place a year ago when one fine day their aunt told the eldest neice that if she wanted to increase her weight, she should have sex with her uncle. When the girl

refused, she was threatened. The man finally raped the 17-year-old girl and did so a number of times subsequently. He similarly raped

Manhunt for serial molester in western suburbs By Zuber Ansari

A

massive man hunt has been launched by the police in the Western Suburbs for a serial child molester. Multiple cases against the accused have been registered at Bandra, Kherwadi, Santacruz, Oshiwara, Versova and Goregaon. The circular by the Additional Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil (West Region) has been sent out to all police stations in the suburbs stating that the sketch of the accused needs to be put up at several places particularly isolated areas, narrow lanes and slums, since the man – described as being in his early thirties with a damaged eye – only targets girls below the age of 10 in isolated lanes and slums. The circular further asks the police to start a combing operation and trace the accused soon. The first incident involving the accused took place in Santacruz in October, where an eight-year-old girl was molested by the accused. The man told the child that he was a friend of her father and then took her to an isolated place where he undressed her and molested her. He then left the girl at the same place and fled. The traumatised child later informed her parents about the incident, after

which a case was registered with the Vakola police. The police rounded up several drug addicts and habitual offenders but none was identified as the accused by the victim. The police finally made a sketch, with the help of the description provided by the girl, which was then sent out to all police stations in the suburbs. During the course of investigations, the police found similar cases at other police stations with the accused being described as having a damaged eye. A police officer from Bandra police station, on the condition of anonymity, said, “There are many such cases and some may not have even been registered.”

A supplementary statement of the complainant will be taken in the matter. Jain’s wife Ulhas said, “We are living here for the last 30 years. We are very scared after the incident and I just hope that my husband recovers soon”.

‘THOSE WHO FEAR POLITICAL ADVERSARIES CANNOT REMAIN IN POLITICS’ CITY

09

Says Ajit Pawar, dismissing any political threat over Raju Shetti’s decision to join the saffron alliance

By Prashant Hamine

D

eputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar yesterday downplayed the political threat posed by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) MP Raju Shetti joining hands with the BJP-Shiv Sena-RPI-A alliance. Speaking to newspersons at the Mantralaya, he remarked, “In politics, we cannot be expected to be fearful of our political opponents. Those who are fearful of their political opponents cannot be expected to remain in politics”. When asked to comment on BJP deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde’s challenge to him to contest Lok Sabha polls from

Beed constituency, he threw a counter challenge to Munde daring him to contest from the Pawar stronghold of Baramati. He sarcastically remarked that he was not inclined to dance to somebody’s whims and fancies. Pawar added that he would abide by whatever decision the party leadership takes. Speaking on the sidelines of the website launch of the Rural Development Department, Pawar stated that the SSS had started as a farmers’ movement and all people joined it setting aside their ideological differences. But after becoming an MP, Shetti now wants to have his supporters elected. Replying to queries over conflicting claims being made over seat-sharing arrangement

between the Congress and NCP, he said that whatever the state leaders from both the sides might say, the final decision is to be taken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar. Over the stalemate regarding the issue of reservation to the Maratha community, he said that the government will have to ensure that it does not exceed the 52 per cent reservation ceiling and also without touching the reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Pawar said that the government was contemplating giving reservation in education and employment to both the Maratha and Muslim communities.

STATE IN OVERDRIVE AS LOK SABHA POLLS LOOM LARGE By A Staff Reporter

A

s the Lok Sabha elections loom large on the political horizon, its effects were felt in the weekly state cabinet meeting held yesterday. Congress-NCP ministers were up in arms demanding that the government speed up its decision making process and implementation of decisions. Speaking to newspersons here at Mantralaya yesterday, Congress Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Harshavardhan Patil disclosed that the ministers wanted the government to do more work, as there was less time left for the government, considering that the model code of conduct has to be enforced in the near future. He added that some ministers

wanted the state cabinet meeting to be held twice a week to clear as many decisions as possible before the poll code sets in. Patil stated that the ministers pointed out that once the model code of conduct is enforced, the state government will not be able to take any new policy decision. Sources disclosed that some senior Congress and NCP ministers were unhappy over the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan-led government’s slow pace of decision making. They pointed out that the government needs to take decisions soon on issues like slashing power tariffs, extending reservations to the Maratha community, and other issues. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that the government has already taken some public welfare decisions like Blood-on-

HARI LAXMI CO-OP HSG. SOC.LTD. Ramchandra Nagar, Nandivali Cross Rd, Dombivali, Tal-Kalyan, Dist.-Thane.

Call, rolling out ultra-modern ambulances and so on. Patil disclosed that the state government has decided to call for a short duration session of the state legislature beginning from February 24. He said that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of both houses will be convened soon to discuss the agenda of the session and its duration. He said that since the model code of conduct could be enforced in the near future, the government will have to present a Vote on Account making financial arrangements for establishment expenditures, probably on February 28 after the union budget. He added that the state government will have to present a full budget in the monsoon session in July.

Ponder awhile... “There's only two people in your life you should lie to... the police and your girlfriend.” -- Jack Nicholson

Custodial death: Culprit cop let off C

USTODIAL deaths keep taking place at police stations across the country. The police think that they have a right to beat a suspect to death during interrogation. Even before a criminal charge is filed, the suspect who might turn out to be innocent is beaten black and blue. The only explanation for custodial death is that our police derive sadistic pleasure while dealing with offenders. A minimum third degree – torture is perhaps necessary in some cases. Maybe the cop who is beating the suspect does not know that the blows could kill. It looks like the police work off all the frustration that builds inside them. What is strange is the politicians who are in charge of Home Ministry do nothing to stop this inhuman tactics. Most of them think it is the done thing and that criminal case cannot be established without inflicting huge pain on the hapless suspect. If politicians had taken some steps in this regard, custodial deaths would have ended at police stations and jails. The police usually escape any kind of punishment. The most that is done is to suspend the cop and later hold an inquiry. It would be interesting to find out in how many cases of death in custody, have the police been punished. They are not even arrested: some bogus enquiry is held and the case is closed. A cop who shot a boy – a 16-year-old minor in a Chennai police station during questioning has been only suspended. His explanation that it was a case of misfire is likely to be accepted. And only punishment he has earned so far is suspension. Is it any wonder these custodial deaths continue to take place? A large number of custodial deaths take place in Maharashtra. The culprit gets off with minimum punishment: A suspension order or a transfer.

AD the government of Uttar Pradesh not been ‘secular’, it would have been censured in our newspapers on a daily basis for the inhumane manner in which it continues to treat the victims of the Muzaffarnagar riots. While the print media has failed to draw adequate attention to the wretched conditions of the refugee camps television journalists have done a better job, so across the country we have seen images on prime time news shows of little children and babies shivering in icy cold tents. We have seen young mothers washing their children and cooking on the edge of pools of filthy water amid fields of rotting garbage. CNNIBN sent one of its reporters to spend a night in one of the camps and visuals of him standing in a freezing tent and pointing to the icy dew dripping through it as its occupants tried hopelessly to warm themselves in front of a small wood fire should have been enough to shake up the hardest hearted officials. They clearly were not. High officials of the Akhilesh Yadav government went on television to pronounce that nobody could ‘die of the cold’ or there would be nobody alive in Siberia.' They admitted that nearly forty children, mostly babies, had died in the past two months but blamed this on the victims' refusal to go to government hospitals. The Chief Minister in an interview to the Wall Street Journal said, “In every camp we have insisted again and again that people go to hospitals for treatment and have their babies delivered in hospitals. But people are not willing. They remain in the camp.”

MLAs on ‘study tour’ Meanwhile, the Chief Minister and his Daddy, the man they once called Maulana Mulayam, were partying with Bollywood stars in their home village of Saifai at an annual festival that amplified brutally the government's contempt for the suffering of the riot victims. If this was not bad enough, the Uttar Pradesh government last week sent off a delegation of MLAs on a ‘study tour’ that takes them to several European countries with a return trip via Turkey and Dubai. When TV reporters accosted these MLAs to find out what they were going to ‘study’ they said they wanted to learn about the democratic traditions in the countries they were visiting. The very least they could have done was come up with a better

excuse because even semi-literate Indians today know that they can find out everything that they need to know about other countries on the internet. The money spent on this ludicrous ‘study’ tour should have been much better spent on winterised tents, blankets and warm clothes for the children in the refugee camps. So what is it that makes one of the most ‘secular’ governments in the country behave

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh without even basic humanity? What is it that makes so ‘secular’ a leader as Mulayam Singh charge desperately poor Muslims with being agents of opposition parties for refusing to leave refugee camps? What is it that prevents a ‘secular’ Prime Minister from doing more for the victims despite having personally seen the wretchedness of their living conditions when he visited the camps with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi? I have been asking myself these questions often this past week and even more so after participating in a panel discussion on the subject on Barkha Dutt's show. On Barkha's show the representative of the Government of Uttar Pradesh was unable to explain even why the only official response to recent TV reports had been to use bulldozers to break down the camps. On the question of why the government was unable to provide the victims with enough security for them to go back to their homes, he had no answers at all. So why is a government that won power two years ago largely because of the Muslim vote been so insensitive to their needs in a time of crisis? Why does the Chief Minister continue to assert, that ‘no government has done more than us’?

The Buddha is such a jewel A

T Plum Village in France, we sat in Venuvana for lunch with the Indian children just a few months ago. But it was not really the morning. Anathapindika, Buddha’s disciple, went alone and he continued to walk until he arrived at Venuvana. It was still very early in the morning. All the monks were still sleeping and it was dark in the bamboo grove. He sat down and suddenly he saw in the fog someone coming, although he did not see very clearly. Finally, he realized that this person may be the Buddha. So they had a few sentences in exchange and he was so happy to meet the Buddha and he recognized in the Buddha his real teacher. So they sat down for a conversation, about a half an hour only, and they love each other. He invited the Buddha to come to his kingdom for a teaching, the kingdom of Kosala. That day, the Buddha went to the house of his brother-in law. After having lunch, he gave a Dharma discourse and that helped Anathapindika to learn more about the teachings of the Buddha. He was determined to invite the Buddha to come to his country to teach. The next day, toward the end of the day, he asked his brother-in-law to allow him to use his house to make an offering to the Buddha again. He wanted the Buddha to come the next day. After having visited the

Buddha a few times, he got the agreement of the Buddha that the Buddha would go to the kingdom of Kosala, the city of Sravasti, to bring the teaching there. Anathapindika was so happy. He asked one of the monks to go with him to make the preparation. Shariputra, one of the high monks in the order, agreed to go with him. They set out on foot to go to the kingdom of Kosala. On the way, they spread the news that

MATTER & SPIRIT the Buddha, a great teacher, is coming and you have to prepare yourself in order to welcome him. When they got back to the city of Sravasti, he looked hard to find a piece of land, because he wanted to keep the Buddha in his country. The Buddha is such a jewel. The Buddha may come and teach and may go back to Venuvana, and he wanted the Buddha to stay longer, much longer, in his kingdom. He was looking very hard for a beautiful place. Finally, he found a place, a beautiful park, very close to the city. He found out that the park belonged to Prince Jeta. He visited the prince and asked the prince to sell it to him in order for him to offer it to the Buddha and his congregation. Jeta said "Well, this

The answer to these questions is not pleasant because it reflects as much on the media as the political culture of ‘secularism’ that we have helped manufacture, but it is time to confront some harsh realities. The first of these is that secularism has become a shield behind which certain political parties hide when asked about their economic and social failures and it is unfortunate that the media has helped them by being less than fair to supposedly non-secular political leaders. Think what would have happened if Muzaffarnagar had been in Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh? In Rajasthan while there was the ‘secular’ Congress government, there were communal riots in Alwar that were mostly ignored by the national media. In Assam under a ‘secular’ government there have been much worse riots last year, but again the national media has chosen to mostly ignore them. Would we have done the same if the riots had happened in Gujarat? I think not.

Muzaffarnagar riots In Muzaffarnagar, the riots took place in September last year and the violence was allowed to spread either on account of the incompetence of the Akhilesh Yadav government or on account of its taking sides. Had we in the media made more noise about this, it is possible that the U.P. government would have done more to help the victims return to the homes they abandoned out of fear. Had we made more noise about living conditions in the camps before winter came, it is possible that the children and old people who have died may still have been alive. As someone often charged with being ‘communal’ these days, may I say that the real reason why Akhilesh Yadav has so far got away with criminal incompetence in the handling of both the violence and rehabilitation in Muzaffarnagar, is because he has long been the ‘secular’ darling of the national media. And, the reason why the word secularism has become such a sham in a political context is also because we in the media have bought the lies that supposedly secular political parties have sold us. Had we not, it is possible that communal violence in India would have become a relic of a more barbaric past long, long ago. The camps in Muzaffarnagar, the inhuman treatment of the people who still live in them, shames us all. And, it shames India. park is my pleasure. The king has given it to me and I want to keep it for my own pleasure." Anathapindika talks about the Buddha. "If you consent to sell it to me, then I will make it into a beautiful practice center for the Buddha and his monks." And he insisted. Prince Jeta in order to dissuade him said, "Well, if you have enough gold to cover the ground of the park, then I will sell it to you. Anathapindika thought for one or two minutes and said, "Yes, I will do that. I will have enough gold to cover the park and I will buy it." And then the prince said, "That is a joke. That is a joke. I don't want to sell." But Anathapindika said, "Your excellency, you know that you are the crown prince and anything a person like you says should not be a joke. You have said so and I have agreed." He went and sought advice of a lawyer. Then the lawyer advised Jeta, the prince, to sell it to him because he had made a declaration as a joke. So finally Anathapindika brought a cart of gold to come and cover the place. They so impressed Prince Jena. "Who is the Buddha that this person agreed to spend all of his fortune to buy a piece of land for him?" He was so impressed that when the gold was spread about two thirds of the ground he said, "Well, I offer the third part. You don't have to bring any more gold. And I also offer all the trees in the park." That is why nowadays we call it the Anathapindika Park with the Jeta Trees. — Thich Nhat Hanh

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014

CONGRESS finally plays its trump card for Election 2014 by bringing in star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to take command of the campaign in Amethi and Rai Bareilly for brother Rahul and mother Sonia Gandhi. Congress is in the worst position when compared with BJP and AAP for 2014 general election but then they seem to be the best amongst the three when it comes to crisis management. BJP played its master card by naming NaMo as their prime ministerial candidate a few months back with a dual purpose. First, it seriously wanted to check its coalition strength (which at present is negligible) and second to put pressure on the UPA to name its candidate for the top spot so that it’s a straight fight OF between NDA’s sea- LETTER THE DAY soned politician against UPA’s political novice. Modi seems to be peaking at the wrong time, but then BJP must have thought that he would be good enough for his rather politically amateur opponent even then. Priyanka’s coming, which on the face of it looks to be for canvassing for the family members may actually be testing of water for her to contest. The “campaign” theory doesn’t fit in well. What if the winds of AAP are strong and she doesn’t pull off a win, the last Congress card also flops. Take the other side – let’s assume Rahul wins, does he still stand a chance to become the PM when he couldn’t win Amethi seat on his own. Let the Congress realise (and the sooner they do the better it will be) that Rahul Gandhi is a gentle and honest person but a complete misfit in politics, leave aside lead the oldest political party. WHAT CONSEQUENCE? Will the actress Alka Punewar be punished for taking the law for a ride?

Will Alka be penalised? THE husband of a regional film and TV actress Alka Punewar (44), had lodged a complaint when she went missing for a few days. It was later found that she had reportedly eloped with her paramour to Chennai via Bangalore. To escape the police search, she had allegedly staged a car “accident” drama off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. In this connection, a friend of the couple has been taken into custody. But the main question that begs for an answer is: “Will she also be made to face the law for sending the police team on a wild goose chase?”

PRIYANKA Gandhi, who reminds one of Indira Gandhi in her younger days should come to the rescue of the sinking Congress ship which has almost lost all hope of returning to power in the coming parliamentary elections which is fast approaching and the election fever has already begun. Kejriwal has set the ball rolling with his style of honest and clean politics as people look forward to see younger set of politicians in Parliament. Priyanka is beautiful apart from the concerned authorities for constructing skywalks at the railway station at Ghatkopar East and Ghatkopar West. I request the authorities for further extending the skywalks at Ghatkopar (Kurla end) to Ghatkopar Link Road to Ghatkopar (Thane end) to Ghatkopar Link Road both at Ghatkopar East and West. The extension will reduce the usage of private vehicles, auto rickshaws and taxis for commuting to Ghatkopar station. Similarly, a foot over bridge should be built from Shri Gurudutta Mandir Road near Gaurishankar Wadi at Pantnagar in Ghatkopar (E) to Ghatkopar (W), which will help the people move without crossing the railway tracks. These skywalks will also help students travelling to the educational institutions at Kurla, Ghatkopar and Vidyavihar. The skywalk and foot over bridge at Ghatkopar will also help curb accidents to a large extend. — Cajetan Peter D’Souza, Ghatkopar

Priyanka has been non-controversial though the same cannot be said about her husband, Robert Vadra who has amassed huge wealth in controversial land deals. MAKE NO HASTE: Arvind Kejriwal should not enter into national politics at this hour, but must first consolidate his hold over Delhi and deliver on his promises first. ARVIND Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party seem to be in a hurry. Though their success, whatever they got, seems to be impressive, but is not sustainable. Instead of burning their fingers in general election, they should concentrate on Delhi alone. They can put up their candidates for Lok Sabha from Delhi. Kejriwal should know that Delhi has not given them the mandate that is required to rule the state. They are on the crutches provided by the same Party (Congress) they were blaming and vituperating. Therefore, there is no scope for gloating. No sooner did they form the government, there are controversies regarding accommodation and

Instead of hauling up Congress for the corruption cases, Kejriwal should, first, consolidate his position and deliver whatever he had assured to the gullible public of Delhi. Then, if any time is left, he should take up that job. It is not, certainly, to condone the corruption of Congress people. But, restless people have no time to wait for all these things. Actually Delhi’s new CM should focus on the administration of this city currently wherein he has a tough manifesto to boot coupled with the expectation of Delhites , which is sky high in respect of making available of crucial basic amenities , which is to be fulfilled . It would be wise for Kejriwal to stay away from the Lok Sabha election this time & in the meanwhile let him obtain the requisite political experience by being involved in the Delhi administration meticulously . During the current tenure of Delhi administration , I hope that they gather the required experience so that then AAP may plunge into the next Lok Sabha election head long . AAP are presently tasked with a very hard assignment , whether they would succeed or not , the time would only reveal . — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

‘My Mother is My critic’

>> Tulsi has been singing since the age of six and credits her family for being her biggest support

Rohit Pramar talks to Tulsi Kumar who tells us about her passion for music and gives us tips on how to achieve a happy life

M

usic baron Bhushan Kumar’s sister, Tulsi Kumar, ventured into playback singing with Humko Deewana Kar Gaye. Hailing from a family that created one of the most prestigious record labels (T-Series) in the country, it wasn’t difficult for her to realise her dream of becoming a singer. But, Tulsi is determined to do more than just Bollywood numbers. In this interview, she talks about music and more. What made you pursue singing as a career? As a child, I would constantly hum along to songs that played on television. My father would often catch me singing and after a few years my parents thought that I had potential. I was six when I was enrolled at Suresh Wadekarji’s Music Academy. Since then every day has been a learning process for me. I am training in light classical music under Pandit Vinod Mishraji. It was my father’s dream for me to become a singer and I feel proud to have fulfilled his wish. Why did you start your career with devotional songs? I come from a spiritual and religious family and these are values that I have inherited from my father. That’s why I wanted to start my career with the name of God. You don’t seem to be singing too many Bollywood songs. Why is that?

R

emember those training manuals that you were handed on the first day at your job? Well, it is possible that Ruchira Karnik is behind those. The co-founder of Work Better works in the executive training space where they provide customised training in soft skills, behaviour and management domain. We talk to her about her firm, her previous ventures and the importance of soft skills in today’s working environment. Tell us about the idea behind Work Better Training. My husband Swapnil Kamat and I then founded Work Better in 2008 with the aim of providing training solutions which are more real, practical and implementable. Being on the receiving end of several boring, theoretical and irrelevant training programs in our jobs made us realise that there is a huge disconnect between the theories and models discussed in the training room and what was actually happening at the workplace.

What kind of songs do you enjoy singing? I have done more of slow romantic songs but I would like to experiment with different genres. Have you ever thought about acting? No, I am content with singing. I might try composing some day but that’s it. Acting is not something that I have thought about. Who has been your constant support? My family, especially my mother because she is a constant source of inspiration and my true critic. When not singing, what do you like to do? I am a foodie. I love hanging out with my friends, and watching movies. I also love travelling and going on short vacations. How do you keep yourself healthy? I eat healthy and do yoga regularly. What are your top tips for a happy life? You have got to believe in yourself — it is more important to be happy from within. If a person is happy from within he doesn’t need to go out to find happiness and that itself would bring joy.

That’s what Ruchira Karnik aims to make you do with her executive training firm. Dev Goswami talks to her and finds out more

Work better

I feel I have been consistent and believe in quality rather than quantity and at the same time, there will be a lot more of me that you will be hearing.

Firstly, I don’t think there are distinctly different qualities that a woman professional should posses over a male counterpart. But, I do feel women should focus on a few qualities to help themselves perform better and create an impression in their respective organisations. If I have to list five such qualities: 1. Build your confidence. 2. Have goals and work on them with great focus. 3. Well planned and extremely organised. 4. Constantly develop yourself. 5. Find joy in your work.

In an age where everyone gives a lot of importance to getting accolades and successes on their CVs, do you think soft skills are not given enough importance? I think corporate organisations and professionals are increasingly acknowledging the importance of soft skills and the role it plays in a professional’s career as well as an organisation’s growth. We are seeing companies spending more on soft skills training along with a huge surge in training requirement from our clients. Women should grab every opportunity to learn and develop themselves. Firstly, identify the areas you would like to develop yourself in. Set goals, attend training programs, read relevant books. And most importantly, put into practice what you have learnt as that’s what will help you see the results.

Prior to work better, you also founded the travel portal, trip2Goa.com. Did you always have an entrepreneurial streak? It was always Swapnil who was more entrepreneurial with a bigger appetite for risk. I have developed the entrepreneur in me over the years through my business ventures. Though I must say, at this point in time I can’t imagine doing anything but building a What’s next for you? Do you have any new ventures planned? company of great value. Currently the focus is completely If I was to ask you, what would be the five essential qualities a on Work Better and building it into the best training firm in India – woman should posses to succeed in the corporate world, a firm that not just conducts training but partners with its clients to help accelerate careers and organisations grow. regardless of her field of profession, what would they be?

Fashion resolutions for 2014

Glynda Alves knows you’re in a sale frenzy, but before you swipe your card, read what fashion resolutions you should make for 2014

Sort out your cupboard If you’re anything like us, we know you’ve got a cupboard full of clothes and yet you have nothing to wear. And while every new occasion has you yelping, “I don’t have any clothes!” you know that’s not really true, right? This year, you (and me) will sort out your wardrobe or wherever you keep your clothes (bed, bathroom, floor etc). Wash, fold, pack — just bring some order to the disorder. You’ll be surprised to find how much you actually have to wear.

Shop Smart during the SaleS You’re logging on to every possible online store and sticking your head out of rickshaws to check out the sales on Linking Road. Stop and breathe. While you may think this is the best time to stock up on clothes, it’s not. You’re just going to go overboard and out of the ten things you buy, you’ll only really use two. Buy clothes that you really need — a new pair of flats for work or an everyday shift dress. We’re sure you can give the sequined mini a skip this season, no?

When in doubt, Say no Oh ladies, if only we could follow this one in all aspects of life. While we might not find it easy to apply when it comes to the men we choose, it should be a slightly easier decision when it comes to fashion. If you’re in doubt about an item of clothing — the shape, colour, size — do not buy it. Why? This is why your cupboard is full of clothes you never really wear.

i Will have no mercy This is also called the Three Month Rule. And

madhuri dixit-nene

A simple yet effortlessly stylish look by Preeti. We love the yellow top – it’s fun, feminine and has a lovely drape. We like that it’s the centre of her look apart from the touch of drama on those fringed boots. Her hair is gorgeous too!

Madhuri oozes glamour in this gorgeous red dress. It flatters her figure and we like that she’s kept her accessories to a minimum by pairing the bold dress with matching earrings alone. Her side swept hair and dazzling smile seals the deal.

take care of your clotheS If the label says to handwash, handwash. If it says to dry clean, dry clean. Sticking to the instructions on the label will ensure that your favourite clothes have a longer shelf life. Similarly, we know that after a night of partying all you want to do is change and head to bed. But, take the time to put your clothes away properly. Don’t just crumple them back into your cupboard.

take the time Not all of us can just throw on clothes and look good. Sure, some women can but let’s not talk about that and depress ourselves now shall we. Take just five to seven minutes out of your day to think about your outfit. In our hurry to be on time, it’s really easy to succumb to your uniform but planning your outfit in advance will make you feel better. Speaking of uniforms...

« just out! honest reviews of new products in the market lakmé crayon eye liner The White Crayon from Lakmé looks like a big chubby crayon that’s stark white — not something you’ll be able to use daily, right? But, we were so surprised when we applied it. The stark white gave way to a subtle ivory with a touch of gold shimmer. It’s smooth, easy to apply in short strokes and lasts all night. I assumed that its staying power meant that it would be a pain to wash out, but that wasn’t the case. It’s great for highlighting the inner corners of the eye as well as using it as a complete eye shadow. We also tried the bright blue and the results were almost exactly the same. Bright colour, soft, easy application and great staying power. It comes off with just soap and water. price `750 Star rating **** Where Available in retail stores across the city

don’t Wear jeanS for one Week Most women are guilty of this. They have that one pair of bottoms (pants/jeans/trousers) that is their fail safe option. Don’t wear it for one whole week. This way you’re forced to think about your choice of clothes and be a little more fashion forward. You’ll be surprised to find how many other options you already have in your current closet.

while this rule doesn’t apply to seasonal clothes or party wear, it’s a great rule to follow for everyday wear. After you sort out your cupboard, try to use everything. And come March, if you haven’t worn a particular item of clothing, chuck it out. If you didn’t manage to wear it once in three months, you aren’t going to miss it.

Though it looks a little ill-fitting, we love this look! The jacket is gorgeous with its subtle yet vibrant print. Her pants are too long but we’ll let it go this time. Our only issue is that her neckpiece, while nice, is completely unnecessary.

There’s a class act like Madhuri, and then there is Poonam. This dress (and her pose!) is too in-your-facesexy and while we are fans of sheer, she is making it look super tacky. The pink accents and gold high heels further ruin her look.

Yeah Sunny, you know you’re sexy. We know you’re sexy. We get it. But, the dress isn’t as eye assaulting as her makeup! She looks like a pancake with heavy foundation, too much shine and that plastic smile. Subtly sexy is the way to go in 2014 – learn how.

It’s easy to grip and maneuver and has a slightly thicker than normal body which prevented slipping. But, why should you use this and not your man’s razor? It’s not just for the pretty colours. Oriflame’s Studio Artist Cream Blush in Soft Peach was a pleasant surprise. The cream dries to a matte finish so your face doesn’t look shiny all night long and it’s a light enough colour, so you don’t look too made up. « 5 ways to rock: a red lace dress Shirley Mistry tells you how to wear a red lace dress and own the look 1. makeup A red lace dress can be complicated in itself. Add to it poor makeup and you have on your hands a disaster sheathed in lace. The first rule is to keep it simple. For a night look, smokey eyes with a nude lip complement the dress well or if you want to keep your makeup in sync with the red palate, opt for a sweep of champagne eyeshadow, winged black liner and matte red lips. 2. Sleek hair A lace dress is all about the detailing and the colour red demands a lot of attention too. Let the dress be the centre of attention and keep your hair-do simple. Save the voluminous blow-dry for another occasion and opt for a side-swept style or a low messy bun instead. Hair that has been blow-dried straight also works well. 3. pop of colour If you do want to break the red a little, a rich cobalt blue is the best way to do it. Add a pop of colour through a clutch or detailing on your earrings or shoes. It offsets the red, without stealing the show. 4. minimal acceSSorieS Again, a statement ring, bracelet or cuff work well. Choose colours such as black and gold when picking accessories and be careful not to over accessorise. Avoid wearing anything around your neck to stop the look from becoming too busy. Add a black belt to give some visual relief and pair it with black or nude pumps. 5. mix elementS A red lace dress is quite classic and the best way to give your look some edge is by picking accessories that >> With no accessories and a pair of nude aren’t! A black and gold graphic print clutch, a gold earpumps, Taylor Swift shows how to rock a cuff or even a slim, studded belt are great to add a little red lace dress spark to an otherwise classic, vintage ensemble.

« cAreer ADvice suBorDinate expecting you to Be on her siDe? finD out hoW to Deal With her I recently got promoted to the post of a team leader. But, it seems that it hasn’t gone down well with the employees who are now under me — before my promotion, they were my friends. One colleague in particular is proving to be a big problem. We were close enough before and now she expects me to be ‘on her side.’ While I’ve managed to stay impartial so far, off late she’s saying stuff like ‘You’ve changed’ and ‘You’ve become just like the other bosses.’ Please tell me how to deal with her. — kritika narayan, malad Dear kritika, What you need to do is draw a line between you and your friend’s personal and professional relationship. If she is not mature enough to understand the difference between the two, it is upto you to make her understand. Be gentle but firm about the fact that you are now her boss and regardless of how close you were/are, you expect the same work from her that you expect from your other subordinates. My guess is that she will get used to the new equation sooner rather than later — especially, if you sit down and talk to her about it. However, if that doesn’t work too well, try shuffling things up a little. Work out a schedule where your interaction with her is kept to a minimum. You could also shuffle around responsibilities a little so that you can minimise on direct contact with each other. If all else fails, ask a superior to shift her to another team.

Back to work Blues ? December was packed with parties, good food and fun times. As the New Year sets in, there is a sudden slump in your life. Since working in such a frame of mind can be quite arduous, Shirley Mistry tells you how to shake off your back-to-work blues

he end of the year is always a complete whirlwind. With endless house parties, Christmas treats and New Year’s Eve plans being hatched, something fun is always around the corner. And let’s admit it — with all the excitement that December brings, it is very easy to slack off a little on the work-front. However, come New Year, you find yourself with no distractions in sight — just a daunting amount of work to go through. With your mind still stuck in party mode, here are some tips on how to tackle the inevitable back-to-work blues.

De-clutter Wasted Fish, the quirky bar accessories store in Bandra, now has some really adorable tea pots. The ceramic pots come in colours such as blue, pink and a vibrant red. But, our pick has to be the butterfly shaped one. For cat lovers, there’s a sunshine yellow tea pot that has the words ‘Kit-tea’ across it. For those who don’t like cats, try the ‘Flir-tea’ or ‘Par-tea’ kettles. Where Wasted Fish, Pali Naka, Bandra (W) price `1,600 onwards

In all likelihood, you haven’t really recovered from the excesses that New Year’s Eve brought and had a rough time pulling yourself out of bed in the morning. Start off by tidying your workspace. It is amazing how a task as simple as cleaning up and giving your workspace some structure, can make you feel a lot more in control of your life. If the actual cleaning up wasn’t enough, spend some time clearing the unused files on your desktop as well. This gives you a fresh slate to work with, instills a greater sense of

control and a new determination to attempt the tasks at hand.

ease into it Now that you are all geared up to get going, ease yourself into the work load rather than diving straight in. Sort through the emails you may have ignored and take stock of the situation. Make a realistic To-Do list and get started, one task at a time. Jumping into your workload and trying to do everything at once is a bad idea. Not only will you feel lost but you won’t be able to give your 100% to any of the tasks if you try and tackle multiple things at once. In fact, you may end up feeling worse than you did before.

Break it up Divide your workload into manageable chunks and give yourself little breaks to recover. A marathon session at your desk will only drain you and will drastically reduce your productivity. Intersperse your day with a couple of minutes spent catching up with your friends. When you all get through it together, it becomes easier for everyone

involved as you realise you are not alone. Treat yourself to photographs from the holiday season — we promise this will perk you up!

plan a treat The best and most fool-proof way to ensure that you get work done is to plan a weekend getaway, road-trip or even a mid-week shopping spree (the sales are on too!). When you have something to look forward to, chances are you wouldn’t mind the workload as much. When you know you can spend the evening shopping, the workload is a lot easier to get through!

Work it out Exercise is slowly becoming the solution to most problems and it is a great cure for the back-to-work blues as well! Not only will it help you get rid of the holiday weight you put on, but it will also help you shake off dreariness. Getting into shape ensures that your emotional health improves as well, which in turn leads to better concentration and greater zeal to work.

« top 5: resolutions you shouldn’t make this year While you may have already made your resolutions, Priyanka Singh tells you about five that you should think twice about

1. diet

A serious diet will begin when you know you are ready. Don’t go on a manic diet that will require you to detox with nothing but juices, only to make you go on a vada pav eating spree once you’re done. instead: Watch your portions and eat in moderation. You can’t be expected to give up chocolate completely if you’ve been a chocoholic your entire life!

2. Quitting Smoking or drinking

It doesn’t happen overnight. A habit that you’ve had for years will not leave you so easily. If going cold turkey works for you, congratulations; you’ll probably be able to pull yourself through this resolution. But imagine a crazy

night with friends, where everyone is ordering martinis and you are standing alone with a Virgin Mary. instead: Cut down smoking with a cigarette less each month. Follow the same pattern with drinks. This will be easier than quitting them altogether.

3. exerciSe

You’re hitting the treadmill for hours with a new gym membership now, but by the start of February, you’ll be exhausted as you’ve made goals that are unachievable. instead: Set a realistic target — lose a set amount of kilos every month, after discussing it with a trainer. And it need not be a number. Just make sure that you lose some weight by the end of each month.

4. Stop Biting your nailS

Or twirling your hair, or… Experts say that it’s impossible to break a physical habit with willpower alone. instead: Become aware of the cues that trigger your habits. Then you’ll be aware when you are likely to bite your nails. This will make you conscious of it and regulate it, eventually minimising it to a great extent.

5. Find a new joB

This should not have a start date. Good jobs are hard to find. If you need a new job, start now as it takes time. instead: Till you actually get a good job, do something that makes you happy — start a blog, follow a hobby or learn a new language.

From dressing up for a date to picking her up, there are a few dating habits that should come out of their vintage closets and become contemporarily cool again. Priyanka Singh lists them out Coming to the door

« SoS: Solve our Situation! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

I am 24-years-old and my sister is 32-years-old. We are close in spite of the big age difference. She is fun and we sometimes hang out. My friends like her as she’s loud. However, she acts like they’re her friends, which is sometimes irritating. Last week... We were both at a mutual friends party.

These days, all you get is a Whatsapp message saying ‘here’ to know that your date has reached. If you’ve known this person for a while, it’d be great if he could get out of the cab or car and knock on the door to pick you up. But, if the man you’re going out with is someone you hooked up with online and he lands up at your door — shut it! He’s a stalker!

dressing up Dressing up might mean different things to different people. While we aren’t saying wear a suit for your date, at least put in some effort when you’re dressing up. After all, how ever superficial it might sound, appearances do count for something. It only indicates that this date maters to you too and that you are trying to make a good impression in every way.

My boyfriend was also there...

slow danCing Whatever happened to that?! Couples only dance when they are at clubs these days, doing the typical grinding dance with each other. Why can’t there be dancing just for the sake of dancing and having fun? Slow dancing is one of the most romantic activities that you can do with someone you are interested in. In a way, it brings a couple closer to each other. And it’s okay of you don’t know the moves. Just moving along together to a melodic rhythm is good enough.

a date after all.” Needless to say, the girl never met him again. Dating has become really casual now. While it’s okay not to take the concept too seriously, it doesn’t mean that you behave as though you’re meeting an old friend who has seen you in your worst avatar. Here are some old fashioned dating habits that we wish couples would bring back!

dear melissa, Some women are just friendly by nature. The first thing you need to do to handle this properly is to make sure you’re not overanalysing the situation — is she like this with everyone? There is a perception in some quarters outside India that the country is losing its momentum of the past decade. This is also amplified by the political contestations here in India, which are inevitably louder in the election season. I want to assure you that there is no reason to despair about our present or worry about our future.

Infosys reorganization – final structure emerging: Infosys has appointed BG Srinivas and UB Pravin Rao as Presidents of the company, reporting directly to the CEO, with immediate effect. All business units will now report to one of the two Presidents. As a result, the Executive Council (EC) will be dissolved starting FY2015. The move identifies two potential leaders who can take on wider responsibilities in the future. While overall reorganization was essential, the execution so far has been mixed. Stay positive on Infosys; however, likely weak 3QFY14E and senior-level exits could cap returns. Senior-level reorganization – BG Srinivas, UB Pravin Rao appointed Presidents: Infosys has appointed BG Srinivas and UB Pravin Rao as Presidents, reporting directly to the CEO, with immediate effect. Business segments that will report to BG Srinivas include BFSI, manufacturing, energy & communications, public services, Lodestone, Strategic Global Sourcing (large deals group), marketing and alliances. Retail & CPG, logistics, life sciences, resources & utilities, growth markets, cloud and mobility, quality and productivity and Infosys Leadership Institute will report to UB Pravin Rao. In addition, BG Srinivas will focus on global markets while UB Pravin Rao will focus on global delivery and service innovation. The Executive Council (EC), as a forum, will cease to exist from April 1, 2014. The significance – identifies potential CEO candidates: We view the move as a step forward in succession planning, which is high on NRN’s agenda as SD Shibulal is due to retire in 2015. The move identifies two potential leaders to take on wider responsibilities in the future. Returns could be capped by recent strong run and likely weak 3QFY14: Our positive thesis on Infosys is based on improving business momentum (as a result of renewed focus on traditional services and aided by improving demand environment) and profitability. Strong execution and stability at the senior level is critical for the turnaround to succeed. We believe that reorganization was a necessary step. However, the execution of it has been mixed with some good decisions (pace of reorganization, clearer market focus, decisive steps on stabilizing operations and rationalizing costs) offset by poor decisions (aggregation of responsibilities, not hiring externally). We retain our ADD rating with an unchanged target price of Rs 3,900. Strong recent stock performance and likely weak 3QFY14 could cap returns in the near term.

Nirmal Bang calls a ‘Buy’ on VST Tillers Tractors CMP: Rs. 708

Target Rs. 958

Investment Rationale: Supply chain management issues resolved; new facility to catapult company into a different league: With the commencement of the new facility at Hosur very soon, the company is aspiring to breach a turnover of Rs.1000-crore mark by FY’16E, an addition of over Rs.500 crore to the topline during FY’12-16E. Net Sales expected to register a CAGR of 33 per cent over FY’13- 15E: Net Sales is expected to register a CAGR of 33 per cent, mainly led by tractor sales which are expected to almost double from 6233 units in FY’13 to over 12000 units in FY’15E. Change in internal product mix to lead to improvement in margins; higher PAT growth: The contribution of tractors (having higher margin compared to tillers) to the net sales is expected to improve significantly from 32 per cent in FY’13 to 42 per cent in FY’15E. This should lead to a CAGR in PAT to 36.9 per cent during FY’13-15E. Deep asset value: Not only the company has a debt-free balance sheet but inherent asset value in the form of 23 acres of land in Whitefield area (present market value is minimum Rs.350 crore) and 18 acres of land in Hosur. Valuation & Recommendation: The company posted net sales of Rs.481.6 crore during FY’13, a decline of 9.2 per cent y-o-y. This was attributable to weak monsoons leading to delay in subsidy at state level. In fact, FY’13 was the only time in the last many years that the company showed a decline in performance. However, the company bounced back strongly in FY’14 with H1 net sales breaching the Rs.300-crore for the first time. Adjusted PAT for the period stood at Rs.36.4 crore, an increase of 77.1 per cent y-o-y. We expect the company to post a PAT of Rs.73.7 crore on net sales of Rs.669.8 crore for the year. With the contribution from the new facility, we expect the company to post a PAT of Rs.91.9 crore on net sales of Rs.855 crore for FY’15E. This translates into an EPS of Rs.106.4. An asset-rich company with a clean balance sheet, enjoying dominance in its product range with earnings set to grow exponentially (at a CAGR of 36.9 per cent over FY’13-15E), we expect the P/E multiple to follow the earnings upgrade. We value the company at 9x FY’15E earnings to arrive at a price target of Rs.958 per share (35 per cent upside) over the next 12-15 months. Nariman Point, Fort and Cuffe Parade witness low demand levels, while Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Kurla (W) and Kalina witness closure of few small- to mid-sized transactions By A Business Reporter

O

ffice space absorption in Mumbai during the fourth quarter of 2013 maintained stability on a q-o-q basis—registering around 1.3 million sq. ft., as compared to nearly the same space uptake in the previous quarter—according to the findings of CBRE’s latest report, India Office Market View Q4 2013. Commenting on the findings of the report, Anshuman Magazine, Chairman and Managing Director, CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd., says “The total office space absorption in Mumbai for the entire year stood at over 6 million sq. ft., but while space uptake in Q4 2013 was similar to that in Q3 2013, it was much lesser compared to the first two quarters

of the year. Demand for office space remained low during the quarter, as most corporates deferred their expansion plans. The Central Business District (CBD) of Nariman Point, Fort and Cuffe Parade witnessed low demand levels, while Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Kurla (W) and Kalina witnessed closure of few small- to mid-sized transactions. It was the city’s peripheral markets, however, that continued to remain the most preferred location of corporate occupiers. Thane and Navi Mumbai continued to see strong demand from clients looking for cost-effective office space options.” Mumbai’s office space addition in Q4 2013 stood at around 900,000 sq. ft., taking the city’s total supply for the year ended December 2013

up to nearly 8.4 million sq. ft. The CBD, Lower Parel, and the BKC, Kurla (W) and Kalina micro-markets did not see any new supply additions. The city’s peripheral markets, however, saw around 0.74 million sq. ft. of IT space addition during the fourth quarter. Going forward, demand is likely to be concentrated mostly in peripheral markets, owing to abundant availability of cost-effective, Grade A office space options. Financial institutions and pharmaceutical firms are likely to drive office space demand in the near term. Owing to large anticipated supply addition, rental and capital values are likely to remain under pressure across most micro-markets of Mumbai in the short to medium term.

MFs Scale 13-Quarter Peak With 8.4% Gain In AUMs By A Business Reporter

T

he Average assets under management (AUMs) of Indian mutual funds (excluding fund of funds) rose 8.4%, or by Rs 682 bn, to Rs 8.77 trillion in the quarter ended December 2013, data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) show. This is the highest AUM for the industry since September 2010 — when AMFI started declaring quarterly average numbers — and the largest quarterly gain in mutual funds’ assets. For the whole of 2013, the industry’s assets increased 11%, or Rs 900 bn, vis-àvis a 15% growth seen in 2012. The growth in the latest quarter was driven by inflows into liquid funds and fixed maturity plans (FMPs), besides equity funds. Equity mutual funds’ average AUM rose 5%, or Rs 96 bn, during the quarter – the highest quarterly increase for the category since September 2010 – to Rs 1.96 trillion, primarily due to mark to market

(MTM) gains. The underlying market, represented by the CNX Nifty, gained 10% during the quarter, led by positive global sentiment, strong foreign institutional investor (FII) buying and pullback of liquidity tightening measures by the RBI. Assets of money market funds grew a whopping 35%, or Rs 602 bn — marking the highest rise since the March 2011 quarter – to Rs 2.31 trillion, on heavy inflows following a reversal of liquidity tightening measures by the RBI once the exchange rate volatility eased. Assets of Fixed Maturity Plans (FMPs) increased sharply over the quarter to close at a new high as investors lapped up these closed ended debt focused funds to benefit from the rise in yields across debt securities. The category saw a rise of Rs 231 bn or 21%, which is the largest gain since March 2011, to close at a record high average AUM of Rs 1.32 trillion in the latest quarter. FMPs are closed ended funds which lock in the yields (currently

The plant is valued at Rs. 100 crores and is funded by IDBI Bank. The new feed plant in Maharashtra will ensure smooth supply of poultry products in the region. This plant further strengthens our commitment to the rural development,’’ said Sundararajan GB, Managing Director of the company “We have been extremely successful in South India; we plan to

high) over the time period of the scheme. Yields on the one-year commercial paper (CP) and certificate of deposit (CD) traded at 9.92% and 9.28%, respectively on December 31, 2013, up significantly from 8.76% and 8.15% at the end of June 2013 (before the RBI’s measures). The share of direct plans also increased moderately over the quarter to 30% of the industry’s AUM vis-àvis 26% in the previous quarter. However, for debt (long and shortterm) and gilt funds, it was the worst quarter since March 2011, mainly due to the interest rate volatility in the domestic market, caused by resurgent inflationary pressures and the recent fall in the rupee. Similarly, the average AUM of gold exchange traded funds (ETFs) witnessed a fall (down Rs 11 bn, or 11%) at Rs 95 bn in the December quarter due to outflows as well as MTM losses. Investors have pulled out money from the category in recent months amid a weak trend in underlying asset prices.

Diplomat row: India offers help to US to tackle issues

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014

N

EW DELHI: With the Devyani Khobragade case dragging on, India today offered help to the US if its ‘internal processes and laws’ were posing any problem in resolving the issue even as it asserted that the dignity of India's diplomacy has to be "accepted and preserved". External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid also justified India's directive to the US for banning commercial activities in its Embassy premises here, saying it is based on "reciprocity and not hostility". Describing Khobragade as

the "face of Indian diplomacy in the US", he said India only expects a friendly country like the US to do what a friendly country does. "Our demand is justice.... If there is a problem in their internal processes and laws...We are willing to help. We must together find a solution. But the bottomline is the dignity of our diplomatic service has to be accepted and preserved by all our friends no matter where in the world," Khurshid said on the sidelines of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conclave here. He did not elaborate but his comments came as the

Khobragade issue has been dragging on even after she was transferred to India's Permanent Mission in the UN, where she enjoys full diplomatic immunity. She is facing the deadline of January 13 for her indictment in court. Speaking against the backdrop of India's fresh directive to the US, the Minister said, "Reciprocity is an evolving process ...When we realize we do not have reciprocity on something, then we do that very thing...We are not hostile...This is only an arrangement based on reciprocity not on hostility.

Claiming that he quit in ‘disgust’, the former SC judge also said he would prefer jail to filing a defamation case against the intern who levelled the sexual harassment allegation, as she was his student. "I will never do anything against someone who was my student. I would rather go to jail," Ganguly told PTI when asked whether he would file a defamation case against the intern. Ganguly, who quit in the wake of mounting pressure after he was indicted by a three-member panel of judges of the Supreme Court, denied any wrong doing and alleged he was not given a fair chance by the apex court. "I have been very badly and unfairly treated by the Supreme Court. I was not given a fair chance by the Supreme Court panel," he told CNN-IBN. a retired judge, he also questioned the appointment of the panel. "The intern never complained to the SC, then why was a panel formed? I appeared before the court in good faith. The Supreme Court panel acted without jurisdiction and basis against me. I am questioning the role of my fellow judges in the Supreme Court," he added. On the panel's observation which had found 'unwelcome behaviour' on his part, Ganguly shot back, "Unwelcome to whom? "I did not force her to stay with me. Neither I forced her to drink wine. Can I force if one is not willing to take it? If she did not like, she could have left before dinner also." The panel had held that the statement of the intern, both written and oral, had prima facie disclosed "an act of unwelcome behaviour (unwelcome verbal/ non-verbal conduct of sexual nature)" by the judge with her in the Le Meridien hotel room in Delhi on December 24, 2012.

Hindu Raksha Dal leader held for AAP office attack G

HAZIABAD: Hours after the attack on Aam Aadmi Party's Kaushambi office here, Ghaziabad Police on Wednesday arrested the national convenor of Hindu Raksha Dal (HRD) and 12 others in connection with the incident. Hindu Raksha Dal national convenor Pinki Choudhary was arrested from Sahibabad area here and an FIR was lodged against him, along with 3040 unknown persons, in connection with the attack. "We have registered an FIR against Pinky Choudhary and around 30-40 unknown persons for the attack on AAP's office," Deputy Superintendent of Police Ran Vijay Singh said. "A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered," he said, adding that police have so far arrested 13 persons in this regard and more arrests would be made soon. "Police are scanning footage of CCTV cameras installed in the party's office to identify other accused, who would also be arrested soon," the DSP said. Earlier in the day, activists

of Hindu Raksha Dal attacked Aam Aadmi Party's Kaushambi office to protest against AAP leader Prashant Bhushan's remarks on referendum in Kashmir. Around 40 activists of Hindu Raksha Dal broke flower pots kept outside the AAP's office and tore party posters. Some glass doors were also smashed in the attack. "We are against AAP's leader Prashant Bhusan's remarks on Kashmir. The attack was also instigated by Kejriwal's remarks on Batla encounter," Choudhary told PTI after his arrest. Bhushan had recently said a referendum should be carried out in Kashmir to decide on deployment of the army to deal with security threats in the Valley. Choudhary alleged that another AAP leader had made remarks against Hindu Gods which was not acceptable to them. Meanwhile, around 35 activists of the outfit protested outside Indirapuram police station against their leader's arrest this evening, prompting police to lathicharge them to disperse them.

Abolishing income-tax feasible, say experts

Abolishing income tax and other levies and replacing them with some other suitable form of revenue is feasible and desirable, say experts, although some believe that such a move would militate against social equity. Describing the concept as ‘aspirational’, Ficci President Sidharth Birla said: "If the steps proposed enhance revenue by broadening and broadbasing the tax payer base and help improve transparency of regulatory framework, we will tend to welcome these aspects."

You will be held in high regard by those around you, especially in your immediate circle. You need to push aside all apprehensions and negative thoughts. Things are not so bad. A special gesture or favor made makes you feel very good about a close relationship that may have been in trouble earlier.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): It is time to consolidate your position and not to take risk in new investment nor to start fresh ventures. A travel plan may have to be postponed for the time being. CANCER (June 21 - July 21): News of a new contract or favorable job offer is likely. Outstation work would turn out to more rewarding and add to your experience. New business proposals lead to gain. Try to clear up the misunderstanding as soon as possible especially if it concerns home and family life.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You will come across fresh ideas for work or business that will fire you with enthusiasm. Start planning moves to implement your scheme, for you may actually have a winner at hand. Do not listen to hearsay. Have no fears and go ahead for success is assured. SURYA POWERS UP MUMBAI www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014

By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: After a shaky start, Suryakumar Yadav helped salvage some pride steering Mumbai to a decent position with his third Ranji Trophy ton in the quarter-final against Maharashtra played at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. Mumbai ended the first day’s play at a respectable 306 for seven in 84 overs, with the rival bowlers making late inroads in to the Mumbai batting order. Suryakumar strode on to the wicket when Samad Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha and Srikant Mundhe effected early breakthroughs to knock out openers Wasim Jaffer and Kaustaubh Pawar and then got wicketkeeper batsman Aditya Tare and all rounder Abhishek Nayar cheaply. By lunch, as Jaffer walked back with Mundhe getting the better off him, there were some tense moments in the Mumbai dressing room. The situation got worse as Nayar who didn’t play in the previous match was deceived by Fallah. Things were ominously poised as the pacers were

applying immense pressure on a lively green strip of wicket prepared for this match. Post lunch was a little better for the Mumbai batsmen with the wicket easing a bit and Vineet Indulkar who is making a comeback for the Mumbai team after a hiatus of three year held fort along with Suryakumar Yadav who consolidated the innings. They tailored a partnership of 183 runs for the fifth wicket. However, this was not before both the batsmen were given lives, first it was Yadav who let out a sigh of relief when the Maharashtra skipper wicket-keep Rohit Motwani missed a stumping when Yadav was batting on 50 and then Kedar Jadhav let slip a chance of Indulkar when he was on 63 off the bowling of Chirag Khurana. While Indulkar went on to add another 19 runs to his tally, it was Yadav’s day as he hoisted his hundred thus creating building blocks for a relatively competitive target. Yadav finally brought up his hundred in style, striking three boundaries to get to 98 runs and striking another one to third-man off Mundhe to secure his third ton.

Good feeling getting a hundred: Suryakumar

M

By A Sports Reporter

UMBAI: He had to wait a long time but Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav finally reached the three figure mark to extricate Mumbai out of trouble after they were reeling at 100 for four. 23-year-old Yadav said that itwas a good feeling to reach the three figure mark after losing out on many starts and failing to convert and make it big. “It is a good feeling getting a hundred in the knockout stage. We were looking shaky till the lunch session. When I spoke to the skipper and coach, they told me to play my natural game and don’t worry too much about technique,” said Yadav. The Mumbai batsman scored his last ton against East Zone in 2012 and this season had only a half century to talk

about. He added that the pressure was definitely on him as the onus to rebuild the innings was on his shoulders. “I just wanted to go out and bat and enjoy my batting. I was getting starts and reaching those 60-70 runs and even I knew in the match against Vidharbha I got off to a bad shot. Getting the first hundred of the season in quarter-final is a big thing. Till date, when I was getting out in the 40’s and 50’s I was thinking how I would get a hundred, which wasn’t a good sign,” he said. He said their tail was good enough to take them past 350 runs and allow the hosts to dictate terms. “I don’t think that they have got even. History says that the tail has can bat really well and Iqbal Abdulla has scored runs in the past. So from here we can put on runs on the board. I think 350 plus can be a good total,” he said.

Suryakumar Yadav raises his bat after scoring a coveted century.

Bopanna-Qureshi in semis, PaesStepanek crash out

YDNEY: Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi progressed to the semifinals of the Sydney International but Leander Paes failed to rescue his 2014 season from a poor start as he crashed out in the first round with Czech partner Radek Stepanek. Bopanna and his Pakistani partner, seeded third, faced stiff resistance from Trat Huey of Philippines and Briton Dominic Inglot before prevailing 6-7(3) 76(5) 10-3 in the quarter-finals. They now face giant-killers Lukas Rosol and Joao Sousa, who dumped the top seeded American pair of Mike and Bob Bryan 3-6 63 14-12 in their quarter-final. For Paes, it has been a nightmarish start to the new season. At the Chennai Open, he did not get to play a single ball as his partner Fabio Fognini pulled out due to an injury. And today he and Stepanek, seeded second, were ousted 4-6 4-6 in 65 minutes by the French pair of Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. After losing the first set, Paes and Stepanek saved a break in the opening game of the second set off the Czech’s serve. They had a chance to break their opponents in the next game but the Frenchmen saved. Paes and Stepanek were leading 2-1 when rain forced suspension of play for about 45 minutes. The Indian was broken in the seventh game which handed an opening to Benneteau and RogerVasselin, who extended their lead to 5-3 by holding serve in the next. Stepanek held his serve to stay in the match but the second seeds could not stop RogerVasselin from serving out the set and the match in the next game. The winners will now take on Australian pair of James Duckworth and Samuel Groth.

Bhajji plays a captain’s knock as Punjab recover against J&K V

ADODARA: Punjab captain Harbhajan Singh made a superb return to competitive cricket as he smashed 92 off only 80 balls to rescue his team from a precarious position against an impressive Jammu and Kashmir bowling attack on the first day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final here today. Punjab scored a decent 304 in their first innings as Harbhajan and No 9 batsman Sandeep Sharma (51) added an invaluable 105 runs for the eighth wicket after J&K seam trio of Samiullah Beigh (2/56), Ram Dayal (3/59) and Umar Nazir (4/66) reduced them to 146 for seven. At stumps, J&K were 11 for one after opener Obaid Haroon (4) edged one from Sandeep to wicketkeeper Gitansh Khera.

Out of Karnataka’s total of 297 on day one, three batsmen — Uthappa, Nair and Gautam — scored 289 runs. Uthappa, who came back into the side after recovering from a hamstring injury, batted fluently inspite of the early blows the hosts suffered. SUNDERLAND ADD TO UNITED PAIN

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014

S

UNDERLAND, UK: Manchester United crashed to a third consecutive loss for the first time since 2001 after losing 2-1 at Sunderland in their League Cup semi-final, first leg on Tuesday. United were looking to bounce back from successive home defeats by Tottenham Hotspur, in the league, and Swansea City, in the FA Cup, but instead they lost again, and to the Premier League's bottom side. Ryan Giggs, who had earlier hit the crossbar, gifted Sunderland the lead with an own goal and despite Nemanja Vidic equalising early in the second half, Fabio Borini's 65th-minute penalty gave the hosts victory. Having eliminated Chelsea in the previous round, Sunderland remain on course to reach a first domestic cup final since 1992, when they lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup final. For United manager David Moyes, however, the gloom grows ever darker, with his hopes of claiming a piece of major domestic silverware in his maiden season severely compromised ahead of the second leg on January 22. The importance of the fixture was evident in the fact that both managers made seven changes to the sides they fielded in the FA Cup at the weekend, although United were once again without the injured Wayne Rooney. Eager

Sunderland's Fabio Borini scores his goal from a penalty kick during their English League Cup semi-final first leg soccer match against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland. to exploit any uncertainty in the visiting ranks, Sunderland looked to get balls into the box at the earliest opportunity and saw Borini drag an early shot wide from just outside the area. However, emboldened by the purposeful running of Adnan Januzaj, United began to assert control of the game. Giggs sent a deflected 25-yard shot against the crossbar, while Januzaj had a goal ruled out for offside and Vidic planted a header wide from a corner shortly before half-time. Sunderland emerged unscathed, though, and in first-half stoppage

time they exploited defensive inattention from United to go ahead. From Sebastian Larsson's deep free-kick, Wes Brown stole in behind Michael Carrick to volley the ball back across goal, and in attempting to prevent Phil Bardsley from prodding home, Giggs succeeded only in scoring himself. The timing of the goal felt like a sucker-punch, but United regrouped at the interval and equalised within seven minutes of kick-off in the second period. Tom Cleverley curled a leftwing corner to the back post and

Vidic outjumped former teammates Brown and John O'Shea to power a header past Vito Mannone. For the umpteenth time this season, however, United's momentum was to desert them. Jonny Evans had to hobble off with an injury, and after Borini had sliced wide and Larsson had drawn a sharp save from visiting goalkeeper David de Gea, Sunderland restored their lead. Cleverley was adjudged to have impeded Adam Johnson as he tore into the penalty area and, Borini calmly lifted the ball past De Gea from 12 yards.

IN BRIEF Tiger cracks $1.3bn in career money, tops Golf Digest list

NEW YORK: World number one Tiger Woods has cracked USD 1.3 billion in career earnings by leading the Golf Digest 50 with USD 83 million in income last year, the magazine reported on its website. Woods, a 14-time major champion, topped the list for the 11th time in its 11-year history with $83,091,508, including an estimated $71 million off the course and more than $12 million in prize money. The story says Woods' winnings of more than $155 million reflect less than 12 percent of his career earnings, with $1.16 billion coming from endorsements since his pro debut in 1996, a figure that continues to increase even in the wake of an infamous sex scandal and ensuing divorce. A Woods deal with Electronic Arts involving a golf video game ended at the conclusion of 2013 and, while he has not approached pre-scandal endorsement totals above $100 million a year, he has bounced back from a 2011 low of $62 million in endorsement income.

Flower slams ‘ultimatum’ talk over Pietersen

SYDNEY: Coach Andy Flower on Wednesday dismissed reports that he issued an ultimatum to England cricket chiefs over misfiring star batsman Kevin Pietersen as "totally inaccurate". English media said Flower was ready to quit unless he was given guarantees that the polarising batsman would not be selected to play under him in the fallout following the 5-0 Ashes series humiliation at the hands of Australia. It follows rumours of a breakdown in their relationship, reportedly sparked by Pietersen making himself unavailable for one-day international matches last year in order to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Yuki out of Australian Open qualifiers

MELBOURNE: Yuki Bhambri failed to clear the first hurdle as he bowed out of the Australian Open qualifiers after losing the opening round match to 28th seed Italian Potito Starace. The 21-year-old Indian youngster made a good comeback after losing the first set but could not maintain the momentum against world number 153 opponent, losing 3-6 6-1 2-6 after one hour and 45 minutes. After making it an even affair with his second set win, Yuki could not cash in on the chances he got in the decisive third set as he squandered three of the four breakpoints and dropped his own serve thrice.

Jamaica sprinter Simpson faces disciplinary panel

KINGSTON, JAMAICA: Olympic sprinter Sherone Simpson testified before a Jamaican disciplinary panel on Tuesday that she never intentionally took a banned substance and blamed her positive doping test on a newly-hired trainer who provided her with supplements. Before a threemember panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission, the Olympic 4x100-relay gold and silver medalist insisted she was not a "cheat." She testified that she believed a supplement provided by trainer Christopher Xuereb of Canada was responsible for her positive test. Simpson, along with former 100-meter world record holder Asafa Powell, tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrone at the sprinting powerhouse's national championships in June.
