Members of a residential complex near the Mulund dumping ground have decided to shun all political parties in the LS elections, owing to the 'apathy' of BMC officials regarding their issues with the dumping ground

Suresh Raja Banker No. There will be some objection or the other raised by the operators sooner or later.

Rashmi Iyer Student No. Flawless working of such systems is difficult because we always hear of cases of fraud when such schemes are declared.

Swati Raghavan Working Professional No. Unless some monitoring authority is appointed to keep a check on the functioning, this looks difficult. Swapna Shankar Chartered Accountant No. The idea is good but to ensure that it actually benefits people a supervisory body should be appointed to make sure that there is no unnecessary charge. Mohit Alva Working Professional No. For how long will this system run without a demand in increase for charges?

Punit Bhavsar Working Professional No. I doubt this scheme will run for long without the operators demanding a hike. This also increases chances for demanding extra money from patients.

Touch of Bollywood in campaign here Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014

By Prashant Hamine

O

f all the six parliamentary constituencies of Mumbai, the presence of Bollywood actor-director Mahesh Manjarekar (MNS) and Rakhi Sawant (Rashtriya Aam Party) to the contest in Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency gives it that touch of Bollywood that seems irresistable to

the average Mumbaikar. These days you can see Manjrekar riding atop a railway engine look alike campaign vehicle and a tiny tempo with a flashy poster of Rakhi Sawant dressed in all green Maharashtrian Navvari saree criss-crossing the area. Loudmouth actor Kamal R Khan, now an Independent, formerly of the Samajwadi Party, would have made the mis too rich

even for this star-ridden city! What people seem to miss is that actually, there are 20 candidates here, most unknown in themselves and their parties. This is because the contest is between sitting Congress MP and former union minister Gurudas Kamat who is being challenged by Gajanan Kirtikar (Shiv Sena), Mayank Gandhi (AAP) and Mahesh Manjarekar (MNS).

Kamat still has the edge By Suyash Padate

S

alman Khan has extended his support to Congress candidate from Mumbai North-West Gurudas Kamat for his various qualities as a politician and for his magnanimity. This has raised many eyes as one of Kamat's rivals in the fray is Salman’s good friend, director-filmmaker Mahesh Manjarekar of MNS. In a recorded message, Salman has urged voters to support Kamat because “good work can be done only by a good person”. Sitting MP of North-West Mumbai, Kamat is leading road shows and holding corner meetings to defend his seat. Kamat has his own way of campaigning. He chats with the people, trying to reply to their queries on the spot. In his drivethrough amid the slums, chawls and buildings of Jogeshwari, Kamat, dressed in his trademark white churidar-kurta, rides in an open vehicle. A flex banner on his van bears the MP's campaign slogan, 'Our MP who got things done and fulfilled his promises'. The flayers,

printed in English, Hindi and Marathi, carry a picture of the Metro Rail, which he takes credit for. Addressing a meeting recently, Kamat came down heavily on BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. He said, “The man who presided over a massacre cannot unite the nation”. In the same breath he took on the Aam Admi Party (AAP). “The group that catapulted to power in Delhi on the back of anti-corruption and tall promises had to eventually make a hasty retreat after miserably failing to deliver. The AAP is making a huge show of its elected members not accepting security. In the 42

years of my career despite being a Union Minister of Home Affairs, I have never taken any security. So why is the AAP making such a big issue?”, he pointed out. Speaking to ADC, Kamat said, “In the last five years I have sincerely worked for the various problems of my constituency. As far as the railway issues are concerned, I got the railways to lengthen the platforms and the long pending demand of Oshiwara station is on the verge of completion. The harbour line will be very shortly extended up to the Goregaon. I made a fullfledged attempt to upgrade road transport. I have pursued the construction of Eastern Freeway. In Versova, I have built the jetty by spending Rs.5 crore for the fishermen”. “I have tried to give justice to all communities and that is the reason I am confident of my victory. I don't want to say anything against my opponents. But people know me and my opponents too. What they say, they hardly do. But I made the efforts to fulfil all my promises”, he added.

Hopeful Kirtikar By Prashant Hamine

T

rying his luck for the second time against sitting Congress MP Gurudas Kamat, senior Shiv Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar is banking on first-time voters along with Maharastrian and North Indian community voters. Speaking to ADC yesterday, he argued that there is no wave in favour of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Mahesh Manjrekar and he is thus hopeful of trouncing Kamat this time around. Although the constituency comprises assembly segments of Versova, Andheri and Jogeshwari dominated by the minority community, Kirtikar argues that this time around they will not vote for the Congress. Another factor that he claims is in his favour is that 24 of the 36 civic wards in

Here the total voter population of 17.25 lakhs comprises of 9.61 lakh male and 7.64 lakh female voters who will decide the fate of the 20 candidates on April 24 at 1,686

polling stations spread across the constituency. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Kamat managed to defeat Kirtikar by a margin of 38,387 votes. Then MNS candidate Shalini Thackeray, kin of MNS chief Raj Thackeray had polled 1.24 lakh votes, dashing the hopes of Kirtikar. This time, the voting is going to be wider, and closer at the same time.

ctor-Director Mahesh Manjrekar is now an aspiring politician, contesting the elections from Mumbai North-West from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).Twitter says that MNS founder Raj Thackeray was the first to make the announcement. Manjrekar posted “I got a call from (MNS chief ) Raj (Thackeray), and I am very happy today.” He filed his nomination on April 2 and has been busy with rallies after that. “Yesterday he went to Bharat Singh Nagar in Goregaon and before that he wasin Andheri,

Versova and the surrounding areas. He also interacted with the Koli community.” said a source who is working closely

with Manjrekar, adding that his wife has been attending all the campaigns with him, adding “Mahesh sir knows the problems of his city. If someone is doing good for Mumbai, he will be on his side.” Manjrekar's Twitter and Facebook accounts are also buzzing with activity of late, as he is posting every couple of hours, gathering a strong social media audience. Like Thackeray, he openly supports Modi. He recently critisized Rahul Gandhi's statement about how power should be with people and not vested in one hand. “Look who's talking” Manjrekar quipped.

AAP files for VVPAT system By A Staff Reporter

he Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) filed a writ petition with the Nagpur bench of the Mumbai High Court yesterday, demanding the installation of a Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail or VVPAT system in the BhandaraGondiya Lok Sabha constituency. The alternative to this action, they suggest, is to postpone the election date.

AAP candidate Prashant Mishra, in whose constituency AAP volunteers have allegedly identified several manipulated machines, insisted that the HC hear the case yesterday itself considering the gravity of the situation. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections are riddled with instances of malpractice and violations of the code of conduct. AAP, keeping with its stand against corruption, has

cute him [Chavan] under section 120 (b) of IPC, the agency cannot proceed to prosecute him under section 13 (1) (d) of the PC Act independently,” the lawyer told the court. Based on this, the court issued notice to Ashok Chavan and the state government and posted the petition for hearing on June 10. CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case against 13 people, including 55-year-old Chavan, who is contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections from Nanded, pending sanction from the Governor and the trial court which is yet to take cognisance of it. The former Chief Minister had challenged inclusion of his name

in the chargesheet, saying no sanction for prosecution was taken from the Governor whereas the CBI countered it saying since he was a former minister at the time of being chargesheeted, there was no need for sanction. The trial court had asked CBI to obtain sanction from the Governor who rejected it on the grounds that there was not much evidence against the Congress leader. However, in the absence of any sanction, CBI had sought to drop the case against Chavan so that the trial against other 12 could proceed. But the special CBI court had in January this year turned down this plea also. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Inadequate storage capacity and inefficient logistics blamed for the mess

By Dominic Rebello

Yes Bank study. There is an urgent need to augment modern and scientific storage facilities to keep pace with the marketable surplus, it said. Due to inadequate storage capacity and inefficient logistics, ASSOCHAM General Secretary D.S. Rawat said that "around 20-30 per cent of total food grain harvest is wasted. Each grain bag is handled at least six times before it is finally opened for processing." To build additional storage capacity, he emphasised upon the need to renovate existing warehouses and implement a robust Negotiable Warehouse Receipt (NWR) system. The study also said that only 12 per cent of the total warehouse ca-

bout 40 per cent of the government's food grain, around 35 million tonnes, is stored in an "unprofessional" way due to acute shortage of storage capacity, industry chamber ASSOCHAM informed yesterday. Currently, 70 per cent of the total warehousing capacity of 112 million tonnes is owned by the government. Provision for an additional 35 million tonnes of storage capacity is required to be made in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) period, it said. entral Railways General Manager Brig Sunil Sood and Chairman of Trustee, Impact India R.C. Sarin inaugurated Lifeline Express, the first 'hospital on wheels', for public viewing on Wednesday at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). Lifeline Express, the world's first train hospital, is parked on platform No. 10 at CST for public viewing. It

will be open for the public till Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. One does not require to buy a platform ticket to view the Lifeline Express. However, Lifeline Express will not carry out or administer any medical treatment in its four-day stay in Mumbai. Asked why the train had been brought to Mumbai , Brig Sood said, “I have been informed by the Lifeline Express authorities that this

pacity accounts for agricultural commodities, while the maximum is industrial warehousing. The warehousing market, which is growing at nine per cent annually, is expected to cross the Rs.35,000 crore mark in the 2015-16 fiscal, it said. According to ASSOCHAM, warehousing is the backbone for developing trade and commerce and agro-processing industry, as it plays a very crucial role in strengthening agricultural supply chain, ensuring food security and price stabilisation. Besides, it also solves the problem of glut and scarcity by maintaining uninterrupted supply of agricultural commodities during the off season, it added.

train has been working in remote pockets of the country. It has been brought here for publicity and too encourage corporates to generate donation through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives”. Some dignitaries suggested that perhaps the train could in future also consider rendering medical service in remort parts of Maharashtra, where doctors are not easily available.

Mayank seems to have it all figured out. “Before going to Parliament, I will hold Assembly level meetings where I will ask what is required and what my stand should be. Similarly, when I return, I shall hold a debriefing to explain what I have done.” And what if he has to follow a party whip as he might well have to in national politics? “A party whip is always an aberration for us. I will explain things to them. And ensure that they understand, that for Aam Aadmi members, it is country even above party.” What would he do with the MP LAD funds, Rs 25 crore over two years, providing he got a chance to spend the sum? “That's easy,” says Mayank. “I will divide the amount between the 38 wards that comprise the Lok Sabha constituency. People will decide priorities. Before undertaking any project, an independent engineer will have to sign off on it from the audit point of view and before the contractors even come in.

How has this experience changed you, we asked Mayank. And he replies, “Some of the places I have visited, especially the slums, have been terrible. But Subhash Nagar on a hillock opposite SEEPZ made me want to cry. Here there are 400 tiny homes slinging to the slopes. There is no running water, no street lamps for the settlement which may be a couple of decades old. Yet they welcomed me so warmly, this tiny place where people still live in hope, running very small businesses, like a chakki, or a 'paan' business. And even here there are people who come from the BMC, demanding Rs.25,000 as 'hafta'! This campaign has really opened my eyes.” Did he think the public perception of AAP had changed after the party won Delhi and then gave it up? Mayank looks at us pityingly. “You know, there is only a very, very small number of people who ask these questions. The rest are just concerned about their own issues, not us 'running away from Delhi'”.

HC revokes attachment of Sanjay Dutt’s flat 08

CITY

By A Staff Reporter

I

n a breather for actor Sanjay Dutt, the Bombay High Court has revoked the attachment of his flat in Bandra. The flat had been attached following the decision of Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) in his dispute with filmmaker Shakeel Noorani, reports PTI. Noorani had moved IMPPA in 2008 alleging his film ‘Jaan Ki Baazi’, for which he had paid Dutt Rs 50 lakh in 2001, could not be completed because the actor did not give dates. On January 28, 2010, IMPPA asked Dutt to either commit 30 days for the shooting or refund Rs 50 lakh and pay an additional Rs 1.53 crore by way of compensation to Noorani. But Dutt failed to follow the order, so Noorani moved the High Court, seeking execution of the IMPPA order which provided for at-

tachment of the actor’s flat if he did not pay. In December 2010, Dutt’s flats were attached. Hearing Dutt’s plea against the attachment, Justice B.P. Colabawalla had on April 7 this year ruled that the decision of IMPPA was not an ‘award’ under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act and thus it can not be enforced. The court termed Noornai’s execution application as “an abuse of the process of the court”, revoked the attachment, and ordered the producer to pay cost of Rs.1.50 lakh to Dutt. Since IMPPA was only a private body, the “entire proceedings for the enforcement” of its award were meaningless, the High Court said. Dutt is currently serving a 42month sentence in Pune’s Yerwada prison for illegal possession of firearms in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. The court noted that “it is the claimant’s (Noorani’s) own case

that the respondent (Dutt) has been nominated on behalf of his company, namely M/s Sanjay Dutt Productions Pvt Ltd, as a member of IMPPA. In the present case, admittedly, the claim made against the respondent was not against his company but against him in his personal capacity as an actor. “Even otherwise, it would make no difference to the case... The proceedings before IMPPA could never be construed as arbitral proceedings. “Even the rules and bye-laws of IMPPA do not spell out any arbitration agreement that would bind the respondent (Dutt),” the court said. Dutt, in his personal capacity not being a member of IMPPA, would not be bound by its decisions, the HC held. IMPPA, at the highest, can be said to be a private tribunal whose decision is intended to affect private rights of two parties but not in a manner which creates a legally enforceable remedy, the court said.

There is no open maidan (ground) for having political meetings in Mumbai now. Neither do people have time,” Deshpande said. Even posters, banners, painting of walls with poll slogans have since been banned by the Election Commission. “Earlier, workshops, seminars were regularly held where candidates of all parties would be invited for debates and discussions. Mock parliament sessions would be held to create awareness among people about the proceedings of the Parliament sessions,” Deshpande recalled. Election meetings have now been restricted to Somaiya ground in central Mumbai or MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla complex. Political parties complain that they are logistically inconvenient. Several candidates have hired public relation agencies to provide information of their campaign to

the media, sources said. The most sensational election result had been in the 1967 Lok Sabha election where George Fernandes, the firebrand union leader beat S.K. Patil, known as the uncrowned king of Bombay. George would paint walls of south Mumbai to strike a chord with the voters, with slogans that Patil was not invincible and he could be defeated, Deshpande said. Baldev Khosa, a four-time Congress MLA who managed the Lok Sabha elections of late Sunil Dutt since December 1984 and is now coordinating the campaign for Gurudas Kamat, says he believes in personalised interaction with voters. Social media has helped us to communicate faster and to a larger audience to come for our meetings. He said earlier they had to print a large number of pamphlets about their campaign, but now communication is easier via social media. “In all election meetings, we have never taken the opponent’s name.

We just speak about what work we have done and what we propose to do in future. Wherever we went, no one asked Gurudas Kamat where he was in the last five years because he has held janta durbars in each ward every three months in the last five years,” Khosa said. However, Rajesh Bandekar, a booth leader of Congress in Mumbai, says social media has not affected the grassroot level cadre’s involvement in election campaigning. “Not all are tech savvy. My job is to mobilise party workers when the candidate is visiting my area. We have to follow the procession, shout slogans, distribute pamphlets and on polling day, take people out for voting,” he said. According to him, the party cadre is being told to open Facebook accounts and register their IDs in the party office. “We are also told that we have to monitor what opposition parties say about us and respond back,” he said.

he Vakola police have been under pressure since the last couple of weeks with the arrest of Murugan the serial house breaker, involved in a large number of house-breaking cases across the city. Murugan Isaki Tevar (47) alias Narayan, is a resident of Kalwa and has been carrying out house breakings since the last five years. He is supported by a gang named after him, the 'Murugan Gang', and has several accomplices. The police have also arrested three of them – Ahmed Mushtaq Qudros Shah (26), Zahir Mohammad Aslam Sheikh (38) and Mohammad Imran Khaliluddin Sheikh (27). According to police officials, Murugan is an expert in house-breaking at night and has around 40 cases registered against him in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai area. Senior Police Inspector (SPI) of Vakola Police station, Vinayak Mulay says, “Murugan has not even consumed water since his arrest which was 13 days ago. Last year, he was arrested by the Vashi police in a house breaking case and was sent to Taloja Jail where he stayed without food and water for a month. Finally, the police officials let him out.” This time the Vakola police

An officer said, “The VP road police officials told us about his fasting, but we thought that he will give in after a few days. However, he has not!” Every time Murugan refuses food and water, police officials jot it down in the police diary. This stays as a proof with them. One of the officials said, “Murugan's condition is critical at the moment. He has

stopped speaking and is unable to move properly. Three days of his custody are left. We are just waiting for the three days to pass quickly so that we are relieved”. If he dies in the lock-up, it will be a case of custodial death. The police said that Murugan does this to avoid police questioning. The Andheri police have refused to take charge of him after the Vakola police informed them about Murugan’s continuing hunger strike.

n a climate where water is the new oxygen, do you think a person can survive without having a sip of water for days on end? There are no studies that give an exact time frame but an internet website says that in ideal conditions, at room temperature (21 degrees celsius), a human being can survive for approximately 3-5 days without water. It also states that the days of survival depend on several factors like the temperature, how hydrated the person was to begin with, whether the person is resting or working, whether there is exposure to the sun, is he or she having food, and if yes then what kind of food, the fat content in the person's body, metabolism rate, etc. According to Dr. Altaf Patel, physician at Jaslok hospital, the maximum you can pull along without water is around two weeks, after which problems like kidney failure set in. So it looks like claims that Murugan has in the past gone without water for 30 days is pretty much impossible!

Centre must act against Azam Khan A

T

HE Samajwadi Party (SP) has come to power in Uttar Pradesh by presenting itself as a strong supporter of the minority community. It is biased against the Hindus who have lost much ground with the Dalits moving away and coming to power. BJP's Amit Shah is there in UP discreetely attempting to bring the majority community centrestage. For some of his comments including his appeal for votes to have 'revenge' for what happened in Muzzafarnagar – by casting their votes against the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. The word 'revenge' has attracted a huge outcry against the BJP leaders who are trying to make communal capital for their party. For the last few months, polarisation was a charge which was being hurled between the BJP and the Congress. Both these parties, the main players in the Lok Sabha elections, have kept denying it – all the time wearing masks of secularism. It looks like the masks are off now and we can see the true face of political parties: Immediately after filing her nomination for the Lok Sabha elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi went to meet Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari. Evidently the meeting was pre-arranged. Sonia Gandhi got his blessings and the very next day he asked all Muslims to vote for the Congress – a clear step towards polarisation. What the Congress, the BJP or the SP claim does not matter, but it has become clear as daylight that they have all adopted communal policies. A brazen declaration a couple of days ago was by SP leader Azam Khan who publicly stated it was the Muslims and not the Hindus who won the Kargil war. This man who has tried to divide the Indian army which has always been above religion or caste. The statement is dangerous: there has never been such reference to the Indian jawan. It is likely to affect the defence of the country itself. This is a trend which must be nipped in the bud. The Election Commission has asked for an explanation. This, however, is not enough. The man should have been arrested and tried, but the state government has not cared to do so. The Centre should intervene and take action against the SP leader who is clearly trying to bring a division in the army. His remark was clearly anti-national and affects the morale of the defence forces. The Indian army is involved and in the absence of any action by the UP government, the Centre should swiftly move against Azam Khan.

s dusk fell over the ghats of Benares last Tuesday I watched Ram Navami being celebrated from a boat on the Ganga. There were lights and crowds and loud religious music on the ghats. On the river floated the sound of mantras from a procession of tableaux telling the story of Ram. Pilgrims and foreign tourists watched in visible wonder. Their presence was a reminder that the celebrations on the Dasashwamedha Ghat were taking place today and not hundreds of years ago. I found myself proud that India should have a city so old, one with such a timeless quality. But I found myself ashamed that this city has been allowed to fall to ruin by municipal neglect and criminal unconcern for India's heritage. Benares with its myths of life and death, its ancient traditions and its vast treasure of learning is a repository of this heritage.

to bring in our best engineers to modernise the antiquated drainage system. Cleaning the Ganga is more complicated because ever since Rajiv Gandhi started the Ganga Action Plan in 1986, an intricate pyramid of corrupt officials have learned to make fortunes out of not cleaning the Ganga. It will not be easy to get them to relinquish their rotten fiefdoms as the late Mahant of the Sankat Mochan mandir Virbhadra Misra discovered when he persuaded the municipality of

A vote of despair

The heritage city scorned The most damage to this city has ironically been done by our socialist rulers in the past 67 years because they deliberately allowed the magnificent palaces of former princes along the riverfront to decay. They have done this in other Indian cities but in Benares the neglect is more obvious and more painful. If they had at least cared to preserve this city's spiritual heritage and its institutions of higher learning, its museums and its superbly rich traditions of art, crafts and textiles it would have been recompense. But, even these have been horribly neglected so it came as no surprise to me that almost everyone I met believed that Narendra Modi would become the saviour of the city and the Ganga if they voted for him. “Without the Ganga there is no Benares so we hope he will do for the Ganga and the ghats what he has done for the Sabarmati in Ahmedabad,” said a former museum curator. These are not difficult things to do even if they seem impossible. To preserve the older parts of the city the first step that needs to be taken is to put a complete ban on motorised traffic. The second is to bring in machines to clean the garbage that litters every street corner and that clogs the river along the ghats. If municipal officials remain incapable of showing commitment to doing this, it is worth giving the job to private companies. The third is

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh Benares to act on his plan to divert sewage away from the Ganga. It never used to be put in the Ganga as a matter of tradition until the British introduced the modern sewage systems. I met Mahantji when I was last here ten years ago. He was a sad and disappointed man. “When the municipality accepted my proposal, state government officials intervened and took the matter to court where it has been stuck for ten years,” he said. As far as I know nothing has changed since. Why am I connecting these civic and environmental problems to Modi becoming, in all likelihood, the next MP from Benares? For the reason that ever since I came here this time I have met people who have talked of him as if he were not just a messiah but a magician. Whether it was students in BHU (Benares Hindu University), politicians in Papu's chai shop on the Assi Ghat or ordinary residents of Benares all I heard repeated was the hope that Modi would bring immense change and prosperity if he becomes prime minister. The words “parivartan” and “vikas” were used so

Sentiments are not stones, they are like rose flowers “T

here are three layers of the human individual: his physiology, the body; his psychology, the mind; and his being, his eternal self. Love can exist on all the three planes, but its qualities will be different. On the plane of physiology, body, it is simply sexuality. You can call it love, because the word love seems to be poetic, beautiful. But ninety-nine percent of people are calling their sex, love. Sex is biological, physiological. Your chemistry, your hormones – everything material is involved in it… "Only one percent of people know a little bit deeper. Poets, painters, musicians, dancers, singers have a sensitivity that they can feel beyond the body. They can feel the beauties of the mind, the sensitivities of the heart, because they live on that plane themselves. But a musician, a painter, a poet, lives on a different plane. He does not think, he feels. And because he lives

many times that they ring in my ears even as I write this piece. These words come always after people have first expressed their deep despair at the state of India. On the day that the Congress Party finally announced that their candidate from Benares was Ajay Rai, a man with a criminal background, the despair deepened. Until then there had been hope among those who do not want Modi to win that the Congress Party would field someone who might be able to give him a really good fight like Priyanka Gandhi. When I asked the Samajwadi Party politician who told me this if he thought she could defeat Modi he said, “No. But, she might be able to reduce the margin of victory by a few lakhs because the Muslim vote could shift to her.”

in his heart, he can feel the other person's heart. That is ordinarily called love. It is rare. I am saying only one percent perhaps, once in a while. "Why are many people not moving to the second plane because it is tremendously beautiful? But there is a problem: anything

MATTER & SPIRIT very beautiful is also very delicate. It is not hardware, it is made of very fragile glass. And once a mirror has fallen and broken, then there is no way to put it together. People are afraid to get so much involved that they reach to the delicate layers of love, because at that stage love is tremendously beautiful but also tremendously changing. Sentiments are not stones, they are like rose flowers…" "Poets are known, artists are known to fall

The Muslim vote is much talked about because there is confusion even among those who like to make reckless predictions about these things. Will it go to the fringe Muslim party, the Quami Ekta Dal, started by the gangster Mukhtar Ansari? Will it go to Congress? Or will Arvind Kejriwal succeed in making more of an impact than he so far has? Whenever I asked about Kejriwal I got a standard response. People said they had liked him very much because of the strong stand he took against corruption but they had become disenchanted when he “ran away” from governing Delhi. Of course he has not yet started his campaign here and things could change but at the moment it does not look as if he has made much of a dent politically. What he has done is succeeded in doing is to make corruption a major issue. Everyone I talked to blamed corruption for all the things that have gone wrong not just in Benares but in India. And, it is because Modi is not seen as corrupt that he is being viewed as a new kind of political leader, one who really cares for more than just winning power. The people of Benares have been let down so many times by their elected representatives that although there is a definite vein of hope running through this very politically conscious city it is not yet strong enough to dispel the layers and layers of despair. Benares is looking not just for an MP but for a saviour. in love almost every day. Their love is like a rose flower. While it is there it is so fragrant, so alive, dancing in the wind, in the rain, in the sun, asserting its beauty. But by the evening it may be gone, and you cannot do anything to prevent it. The deeper love of the heart is just like a breeze that comes into your room, brings its freshness, coolness, and then it is gone. You cannot catch hold of the wind in your fist. Very few people are so courageous as to live with a moment-to-moment, changing life. Hence, they have decided to fall into a love on which they can depend. "I don't know which kind of love you know – most probably the first kind, perhaps, the second kind. And you are afraid that if you reach your being, what will happen to your love? Certainly it will be gone – but you will not be a loser. A new kind of love will arise which arises only perhaps to one person in millions. That love can only be called lovingness." — Osho

SRI Lanka deserves all accolades for winning the T-20 World Cup in style by defeating hot favourites India in a low scoring contest. Sri Lankan bowlers bowled to a plan as Indian batsmen were all at sea and clueless to some terrific stuff from Malinga and company in the death overs which proved fatal for Dhoni and his boys. Our team was overconfident while Sri Lankan players were more focused & had their feet grounded. Sangakkara played the innings of his life and while he fails to fire in IPL games (remained unsold in IPL auction), playing for the national side brings the best out of him which is the reverse for our boys. Virat Kohli as usual batted brilliantly but got hardly any support from any of his colleagues who even failed to rotate strike for Kohli to make amends. Too much money in IPL has changed the attitude of our boys as they perform brilliantly playing for their franchises but are not as motivated playing in national colours. Perhaps the 'mullah' in advertisement revenues and IPL money has had a bearing on our players!

Ajay Rai versus Modi THE decision of the Congress party to field local MLA Ajay Rai from Varanasi against BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aam Admi Party's Arvind Kejriwal is in right direction and a timely one. Congress candidate Ajay Rai belongs to the Bhumihar caste and is the sitting MLA from Pindra near Varanasi and both Modi and Kejriwal are outsiders and have not done anything for the local people. I strongly feel that since the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat is a multi-cornered contest with other parties like BSP and SP in the field, it is going to be a tough fight. All like-minded secular parties like AAP, BSP and SP must withdraw their candidates to enable Congress to give a fight to Narendra Modi rather than splitting the votes to give advantage to Modi. IT is enormously saddening that the man who was responsible for Team India lifting the last World Cup, Yuvraj Singh has left Indian fans far above the ground and desiccated against Sri Lanka in the ICC World T20 final. Hardly ever does one man's malfunction in a team sport influence the end result so much. But in the case of Yuvraj, he consumed too many deliveries and did not give Virat Kohli a strike, as India failed to put up a respectable score against the Lankans. According to some, the indignation to Yuvraj's dud show is a kneejerk reaction. However, for a country which adores cricket so fervently, it is comprehensible. In fact for days, the cadence had been building up as Team India was peaking. R. Apart from ads in the visual media, all colleges and schools should have got a poster about the programme. A competition for students would have boosted the TRP of the programme. However, the real fight, according to political observers, will be between Munde and NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar who have intensified efforts to defeat BJP’s biggest mass leader in Maharashtra in his citadel. However, this time around, Dhananjay, NCP MLC, is campaigning against him. Pankaja, BJP MLA, is now steering his campaign. As if to avenge NCP’s weaning away Dhananjay, Munde has engineered a split in the

local NCP camp, with several prominent NCP leaders joining the BJP recently. The six Assembly segments in the Beed Lok Sabha constituency — Georai, Majalgoan, Beed, Ashti, Kaij and Parli — are part of the Marathwada region, considered backward in terms of development. Beed district supplies most

of the labour force for sugarcane harvest to western Maharashtra and Karnataka. The workforce has sizeable population of Marathas, Vanjaras, Muslims and Dalits. The Beed constituency is considered politically sensitive and dominated by the OBCs. While Vanjaras, the community to which Munde belongs, has around four lakh votes, OBCs comprise an equal number of votes. For voters in Beed, it has been a long wait for railway network in the area. Munde says he made concerted ef-

forts for undertaking a survey for Ahmednagar-Beed-Parli railway line and blamed the UPA government for delay in the work. However, Dhas says Munde, his former political guru, has not fulfilled the 27 “promises” he made to voters

Nandu Madhav says his focus will be on providing a clean administration and a platform for the common man to get their work done. The Munde campaign was in the news recently, albeit for wrong reasons, when 10 BJP workers and supporters of the senior leader were booked for allegedly thrash-

dit, Prakash Solanke and Adaskar, besides Dhananjay. The BJP’s star campaigners in Beed constituency included the party’s national president Rajnath Singh who addresses a rally in Parli, while NCP leaders, including Sharad Pawar, have addressed rallies, seeking votes for Dhas. Pawar, in fact, raised eyebrows in state political circles recently by remarking that “some in BJP want Munde to be defeated.”

s many as 339 candidates have remained in the fray for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections for 19 constituencies including those in Mumbai, with 77 candidates withdrawing nominations on Wednesday. Yesterday was the last day of withdrawal. A total of 495 candidates had filed nominations for this phase, slated for April 24. Aurangabad constituency witnessed the highest number of candidates — 45 — filing papers, while the lowest — 14 — nominations were filed in Nandurbar. However, in Aurangabad, eventually 27 candidates withdrew their nominations, which again was the highest number. Eleven candidates withdrew in Raver, nine in Nandurbar, while no candidate withdrew in Mumbai South and Mumbai North. The constituencies going to the polls on April 24 include Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Aurangabad and Jalna. Prominent among those in the fray are NCP strongman and the state PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal (Nashik), Union Minister of State for Telecom Milind Deora (Mumbai South), noted social activist Medha Patkar on AAP ticket (Mumbai North East).

The little yellow dress is the new LBD, so pick a subdued tone for a night out. Add a pretty bag and accesorise with a statement headband.

If bright colours are too much for you, we suggest you pick this pastel look. Paired with a gorgeous pair of low heels that work for a night out as well as during the day, this is a versatile summer look.

vivacious vidushi Multi-faceted Vidushi Mehra talks to Rohit Pramar about her upcoming film, being a working mother and what made her switch from banking to acting

A

ctress Vidushi Mehra, who will soon be seen in Fugly, is an MBA, former banker, musician, theatre artist, film actor and entrepreneur. She is also designer Nikhil Mehra’s (of Shantanu & Nikhil fame) wife. A multi-faceted, dynamic artist, who has performed in over 45 productions on stage, Vidushi talks to us about acting, her personal life and much more. You used to work as an investment banker. What made you get into acting? I enjoyed my stint in the corporate world, but I was always more inclined towards the performing arts. When I had my children, it didn’t make sense for me to continue with my busy banking career. I performed in theatre as a child and continued with it even when I was exhausted from working. My love for theatre ultimately made me give up my corporate career. Acting for me is survival — sort of like how one needs oxygen to breathe. Whether its on stage, in a film or any other medium, acting comes to me naturally and when I don’t act, I feel immensely restless. If I’m not constantly performing, I feel a deep unhappy void creatively.

How did you land a role in Fugly? I was the last actor to get cast in Fugly, so I think it was a role that was meant for me. Tanya, the costume stylist on my previous film, No One Killed Jessica, was also styling the actors for Fugly. She called me and the rest was history. I auditioned, Kabir (director) liked my audition and I was cast the same day. The shoot happened literally two days later, at India Gate.

I’m confused, his clarity hits me like a lightening bolt. Being a mother, how do you manage your personal and professional life? I have an extremely supportive family, with loving inlaws. They understand my passion and have always backed me 100%. Without them, my acting career would have been just a dream. They take wonderful care of my children, who adore them.

Tell us about your role in the movie. I play a feisty journalist who would do anything to file her story and reveal the truth. In the world of journalism, I doubt that any journalist would disagree with how been my character has been portrayed. It is cut throat, but still sensitive and righteous — my character stands up for the truth.

How do you manage to live a stress-free life? What are the things you do to relax? I do yoga every morning — that's my personal time. I engage in a lot of fun activities with my kids over the weekend. Weekends are meant for my family and I wouldn't change that for anything.

Do you consult your husband about your films and does he seek your advice when it comes to fashion? Yes, considering he also belongs to a competitive industry (fashion), we have a lot of common ground and he is my sounding board. I value his advice and whenever

Do you follow a beauty regime? I eat well and look after my skin, but I don't have an elaborate beauty regime. My kids keep me on my toes and are the secret behind my happiness and good health.

The night creme on the other hand is meant to give your skin a healthy makeover overnight, making it softer, smoother and brighter with every application. First off, the creams are very greasy and don’t get absorbed fully even after an hour of application. You don’t mind the ickiness in the night, but for my day cream, I’d like something that doesn’t make my face look like it’s got a film of oil on it. There's nothing funny about comedian Bharti's sense of style. The colour is perfect for summer while the gold accents work well for a red carpet event. Hair is kept simple with a cute clip to add a touch of glam to her demure but classy look.

We spent some time wondering whether this look was fusion or just a mismatch. While we don't think it's a 100% success, we like that she's given the traditional look her own spin. We like how she's kept the top simple so that all the attention falls on her lovely and lively skirt.

What a determined girl — even with a back brace (see strange wrap around belt) and bandaged torso (see strange bodice), she makes it to her red carpet event. But, this illusion dress-pant combination has too much going on and coupled with that giant top bun, it's just overkill.

While Ekta has definitely been dressing better, she's still not quite there yet. The colour is flattering, but the silhouette of the dress seems a little too billowy for the television mogul. Hair and makeup seem to be non-existent and all those bangles make her outfit look casual.

Don't get us wrong... we love Madhuri, but here everything seems just a little too long. The skirt threatens to trip her, while her hair looks like it could do with a trim. However, the peplum top is pretty and does flatter her frame. A few inches off and this look would have been perfect!

LeveL up!

Being stuck at one level can be really frustrating... and no, we’re not talking about Candy Crush, we are talking about your professional life. Dev Goswami tells you what you should do if all your job switches have been lateral instead of vertical

Designation matters Make sure that your new job is accompanied by a change in designation. For example, if you've been assistant manager, it doesn’t make sense to move to a new company where you are still assistant manager (‘special promotions’), unless the work is something you really want to do. Even if it’s not the dream designation on paper, make sure you're not moving for just a small salary bump.

Hungry for responsibility To move up the ladder, you need to prove that you want responsibility and are ready to handle it. You can do this by saying yes whenever your boss asks you to do extra work instead of wondering whether you'll get overtime, by being proactive, sticking to deadlines and making sure your work is always top-notch. Your superiors will notice things such as whether pressure is getting to you, if your moods are influencing your productivity and how reliable you are no matter how difficult the task at hand is. It's an uphill climb, but it's worth it in the end.

look for growtH While designations should matter, don't make all your decisions based on the job title. You should also see growth potential at a new company. If you’re moving from a big multi-national corporation to a smaller set up, you can take it for granted that you'll be at the same position for the foreseeable future. We aren’t telling you to avoid small organisations; but you should make sure you know what you want before jumping in.

Don’t get too comfortable It is good to have a job that gives you the perfect work-life balance. But, getting too comfortable will mean that you will reject any prospect of change. And moving up is all about change; so you need to be ready to accept the fact that you’ll need to adjust and make a few compromises. Getting too comfortable is one of the easiest ways you can end up moving sideways.

interview tricks

uccess — the word means different things to all of us. But, there will be one factor that you will have in common with everyone — the desire to climb the career ladder. It is one of the most important factors that determine your professional success. The problem is, this is not as easy to do as it is to talk about — especially today, where people switch jobs in the blink of an eye. Being in one job for over a

year is termed as ‘too long’ and if success doesn't come instantly, you switch jobs for a quick pay hike. This can leave you with a higher salary than your peers — but only initially. Eventually, you will be stuck moving sideways between organisations (or even the same company) instead of moving up in your career. So, we bring you some tips to ensure that you don't end up stuck at the same level forever.

« career advice

During a self appraisal or job interview, focus on work that showcases your ability to handle responsibility. Also, ensure that when you’re talking about past experiences, you talk about them in a way that shows, that your career graph has been moving upwards. For example: if you have been at the same position for a long time, back it up with consistent good work. Finally, dress for the job you want. It really helps. After all, first impressions are the ones that last.

« stuff we like

Dealing witH a colleague wHo goes back on Her worD A while ago, I helped out a colleague who was new on the job and swamped with work. At the time, she was extremely grateful and kept telling me that if there was anything that I needed done, she would gladly help, because ‘she owed me one.’ I recently asked if she could help me with something. It wasn't even because she owed me anything, but because what I needed help with was her forte. But, she went back on her word! Not only did she refuse to help, she made a sarcastic comment telling me that if I couldn't handle my work, I should resign. I can't stand the sight of her anymore! What should I do? — surbhi shah, mahim Dear surbhi, For now, I’d recommend forgetting about the episode. You did the work you were supposed to; staying angry is a waste of your time and energy. Constantly thinking about it will distract you from your work and ultimately work against you. The best way to think about this episode is that you were the good person — you helped someone who needed it and she did the exact opposite. That said, you don’t need to extend any more courtesies to her. The world is filled with people

It is possible that in your anxiety to move up, you might end up changing jobs too often. This gives employers the impression that you don’t gel well with an organisation and they will perceive you as someone who isn’t going to stick around. This will lead to you not being given any actual responsibilities.

What do you suggest? — nikita gosain, malad Dear nikita, I am going to agree with your friends. You should understand that getting your leave cancelled is not something that should make you consider leaving. And furthermore, your boss actually apologised to you for what he had to do. Don’t wait to ovulate It's a common practice to wait till you're ovulating before trying to get pregnant but the truth is, you're most likely to get pregnant if you’ve been trying for the entire month — especially in the week just before you ovulate, which is when you're most fertile. Sperm stays active for several days, sometimes even weeks, so the more you try, the higher your chances!

trust your nose If you've got an irregular period and can't exactly chart when you're most fertile, you could try letting your nose take control. Sounds strange? Well, just like when you're pregnant, your sense of smell is at an all-time high when you're ovulating. So, instead of whining about how everything smells sharper than usual, realise that this is the best time to try to conceive.

Another plant that keeps mosquitoes away is lemongrass. Easily available at nurseries, it's a good addition to your home. Plant it around the house or in a pot on a window and rest assured that mosquitoes won’t find their way in.

your chances aren’t that high

even when you do get pregnant. So, remember to keep your teeth healthy to keep your baby healthy.

Don't get worried or question your fertility if you don't get pregnant as soon as you start trying. Every month, you have a 15% chance of conceiving. This means that you should prepare yourself for a long wait and be positive throughout, because stressing about not getting pregnant will only reduce your chances of conceiving.

Dairy Diary

geraniuM

Stay away from low-fat options. You may find this surprising, but full-fat dairy can actually help you stay more fertile. Lowfat dairy options won't help your oestrogen levels or increase your hormones, which in turn won't help you on your quest to get pregnant. So, put away the low-fat creamer and enjoy some wholesome dairy once in a while.

The superhero of all plants that keep pests away is the geranium flower plant. Apart from adding some colour to your garden, it has the ability to keep away a long list of pests away including cockroaches, fleas, ticks, bedbugs, lice and ants. This plant is easily available and is also low maintenance.

Forget the position Stop reading books that tell you which position increases your chances of conception. The truth is that while certain positions may help, there have never been conclusive studies that prove this. So, opt for the position you enjoy the most instead of caving in to half-baked ideas. After all, men and women have been conceiving without rules for eons, so there's no reason why it won't work for you.

Brush & Floss! No, we didn't lose track of what we were telling you about. The reason we brought up good oral hygiene is because it makes a world of a difference when it comes to fertility too. If you have poor oral hygiene, it can lead to gum disease, which will lead to problems such as premature delivery,

Don’t worry Forget diets, forget the type and length of your partners underwear (some people believe that tight underwear is bad for men since it decreases sperm count. But there's not enough research to prove anything, so there’s no reason for you to get hot and bothered over it) and stop worrying about when you should be trying to conceive and in what position. Research changes from year to year, sometimes even within a few months. The one constant thing that will hamper your fertility the most is stress and worry. Fertility increases when your life and diet is balanced. So, indulge in everything in moderation and practise a little meditation to improve your chances.

Bay leaves

A popular ingredient in several cuisines, bay leaves work as an insecticide without all the toxins. Grow them in your kitchen or place dried bay leaves around the house. They keep cockroaches, ants and fleas away.

Nifty Breaches 6800...

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (April 10, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: An all time closing high was registered on the Nifty after it rose substantially on Wednesday (April 09, 2014) a net 101.15 points (1.51%) and closed at the 6796 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6722 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.55 a.m. The index then declined and registered the day’s low at the 6705 points level at 12.06 p.m. It then rose steadily and sharply till the end of the session to register the day’s high at the 6808 points level at 3.26 p.m. The market then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 104 points and closed just below the psychologically important 6800 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 39 were gainers, while 11 were losers. All the sectoral indices barring IT and technology closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen in banking, metal, healthcare, realty and capital goods stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 10.79%. This change is moderate but indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1141 were gainers, 396 were losers and 61 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level. Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance at the 6753 points level was crossed above yesterday. The next resistance is at the 6809 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6770 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6731. Support (2) = 6666. Resistance (1) = 6835. Resistance (2) = 6874. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above its 5 days moving average. The index is now above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Moreover, a bullish hook formation is visible on the 5 days moving average. The velocity parameters which were neutrally trended have now again turned positive. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive /if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength. MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 6734) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6645) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6581) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6068) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Target: Rs. 710

SUNP has announced plans to fully acquire RBXY for an EV of US$ 4bn (2.2x CY13 sales) in an all-stock deal (~16.5% equity dilution for SUNP). We expect the deal to affect SUNP’s profits/return ratios over the medium term, and accordingly lower our target multiple to 22x (vs. 23x) and TP to Rs 710 (from Rs 740). But we retain estimates pending deal closure (by CY14-end) and remain positive on SUNP given its turnaround track record in M&As and likely business diversification (new market access, India leadership). BUY. Deal strengthens SUNP’s global positioning: As part of the deal, SUNP will pay 0.8 shares for every RBXY share held (US$ 3.2bn equity value) and assume ~US$ 800mn debt in RBXY’s books. This values RBXY at 1.9x CY15 EV/sales and 15x EV/EBITDA, which is reasonable given the potential, highcash generating FTFs in the near term (Diovan, Nexium, Valcyte) and higher synergies in the long term. The deal catapults SUNP to a clear leadership position in the domestic market (9.2% share)/5th largest US generics company, enhancing its presence the niche US derma space. Synergy target realistic, resolution of USFDA issues to add further: Management expects the deal to be EPS-accretive in the first year itself (likely incl. FTF upsides), with additional US$ 250mn synergies by third year led by supply chain efficiencies and a growth rebound in key markets. A soonerthan-expected resolution of RBXY’s long-drawn out USFDA issues (all 4 plants under consent decree) could lend further margin upsides. We expect RBXY’s core margins to touch 14% by FY16E from ~9% now on greater domestic reach/ramp-up in high-growth RoW markets (Russia, SA). Commendable track record in business turnaround: RBXY’s acquisition comes at a time when it is entangled in regulatory hurdles and reporting near-bottom profits (8% margins vs. 14-15% normalized margins). SUNP’s near-term focus would be to attain regulatory compliance at RBXY’s facilities and rationalise its high-cost operating model. Launch of key FTFs would generate further cash flows (up to US$ 600mn) and help in reducing debt levels further.

Angel Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Tata Motors DVR CMP: Rs. 231

Target: Rs. 365

Tata Motors DVR (TaMoD) shares are "A" shares carrying differential voting rights. TaMoD has 10 percent of the ordinary voting rights and higher dividend per share by 5 percent than the aggregate dividend rate for main shares. Currently, the stock is trading at a steep discount of 46.7 percent to its main shares. However, internationally, the main shares and their DVR forms usually trade at parity or at lower discount. This leads us to assume that the discount gap at which TaMoD is trading will reduce going forward. Considering the target price for TTMT at Rs 487 and expectation of the discount to reduce to 25.0 percent over next 2 years, we recommend Buy rating on TaMoD with a target price of Rs 365. TaMoD shares with differential voting rights and beneficiary of minimally higher dividend amount (5 percent higher) are at par with the main shares in rest of the aspects. For this reason, ideally, the DVR shares are expected to trade at lower discount from the main share. However, TaMoD shares have been historically trading at higher discount to their main shares, currently at 46.7 percent discount which is expected to reduce eventually. JLR delivered a solid 40 percent ROE despite weak yet improving margins on the Jaguar part. Moreover, it is expected to deliver a volume CAGR of ~14 percent over FY2013-15E, driven by strong momentum witnessed in the recently launched models and full ramp-up of the new Range Rover Sport. We expect the stellar JLR performance to drive further growth for TTMT. Outlook and Valuation: Considering the robust growth prospects of TTMT, we expect the bottom-line of the company to grow at a CAGR of 24 percent over FY2013-16E. Valuing the TTMT on SOTP basis, target price works out to be Rs 487. Moreover, at CMP, TaMoD is trading at attractive valuations of 3.5x PE for FY2016E. Assuming the discount gap to reduce from current 46.7 percent to 25.0 percent we arrive at the target price for TaMoD at Rs 365 over coming two years, providing 69.1 percent upside from current levels. DVR valuation status for Global companies: Globally, the DVR shares have been trading either at parity or very small discount to their main shares. Furthermore, stocks like Volkswagen have their DVR form trading at 3.5% premium to main shares. Successively, we assume TaMoD shares which are currently trading at 46.7% discount to main shares, to rise until the discount gap reduces to 25.0% in coming two years. TTMT to capitalize on JLR’s brand name: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is a global premium automotive business which designs, engineers and manufactures Jaguar luxury performance cars and Land Rover premium allterrain vehicles. JLR delivers a solid 40% ROE despite the weak yet improving margins on the Jaguar part. We expect JLR to deliver an ~14% volume CAGR over FY2013-15 driven by strong momentum witnessed in the recently launched models while EBITDA margins to be in the region of 16.5-17% going ahead.

‘T

HE Calcutta Diaries,' is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of Pablo Bartholomew focusing on his years in Calcutta in the mid 1970s on April 5, 2014. The suite includes his documentation of the Haka Chinese community of South Calcutta, his interaction with Satyajit Ray during the shooting of his cult classic Shatranj ke Khiladi, images of his aging grandmother and narratives of the 'City of Joy.' Here he speaks exclusively to ADC about his work over the years:

Arkay | ADC he held some four decades ago, he has evolved step by step and made experiments with new concepts. It is clear he has vast powers of imagination which enable him to discover new forms and build top-class images. Of course, the realistic is out. He started doing 'contemporary and modern' paintings long ago. He got to the verge of abstraction and then mixed it with some more styles and produced fascinating composition.

Imagination and well developed technical ability has enabled the Bengali artist to produce masterpieces. In each one of his exhibitions, the connoisseur and the buyer can always find something different. His range of creation is huge and this enables him to produce something new always. How much has the influence of Satyajit Ray been on you? I think Ray's influence has been monumental. It taught me the economy of work. How if you really are the master of many crafts, you can mix them into creating in the most economical and layered manner. It was an education to see how this man wrote his scripts, directed, composed music, designed the sets and shot the film. Working at every level from editing to sound, he was totally involved. It was a way of also understanding and knowing that I did not want to go in the cinema but remain with photography. How different are you from the works of your father? There are multiple threads that overlap and in fact I am working towards an exhibition that shows both our work side by side. Most of this was discovered by my in 2006 when I started to go through his

“His engagement with the Haka Chinese community in the Tangra area, this group who lived, owned and ran leather tanneries -- and in a diminished way still does – was his first endeavour to document a community in transition, coming to terms with themselves, marginal, closed but proud, and friendly. Following the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his men are charged with finding the socalled weapons of mass destruction, whose existence justified American involvement, according to the Pentagon and their man in Baghdad, Poundstone. Veteran CIA operative Marty tells Miller that there are no weapons, it is a deception to allow the Americans to take over the country and install a puppet leader. Also suspicious of Poundstone is Wall Street Journal reporter Lawrie Dayne, who lets slip to Miller that Poundstone told her he had secret talks in Jordan with an important Iraqi, code-named Magellan, who told him about the weapons, though it now seems likely Magellan’s true information was to the contrary. So begins a hunt for the truth. Who’s playing whom? Star Movies, 10.30 p.m .

TV TATTLE Sa Re Ga Ma Pa grand finale

The popular singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee Marathi is now in its final phase and five contestants will fight it out on April 10 at the Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagruha,Thane. The five finalists are Mahesh Kante from Murbad, Jayant Pansare from Sholapur, Reshmi Kulkarni from Dombivali, Juili Joglekar from Kolhapur, and Pralhad Jadhav from Kolhapur. The grand finale will be telecast on Zee Marathi every Monday and Tuesday at 9.30 pm.

Rohit Khurana started his career with modeling in Delhi. After he made his television career with the role of Vansh in 'Uttaran' on Colors TV he won New Talent Award for Best New Actor in a Supporting Role. Following his role in 'Miley Jab Hum Tum' as Dhruv, he also appeared in 'Maayke Se Bandhi Dor' as Bhaskar. In 2011 he was roped in for a negative role of Shaurya Singhania in 'Sasural Simar Ka', opposite Falaq Naaz. Also, he was last seen in 'Khoobsurat', on Sony. Now he will be a part of a crime based show ‘Encounter’ starting from April 11 on Sony. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Rohit about his new show. Some excerpts.

Game of Thrones on HBO

Premiering within a week of their US premiere, the Emmy and Golden Globewinning Game of Thrones returns for its fourth season on Sunday, April 13 at 9.00 pm, on HBO Defined, 100% ad-free, followed by other episodes on subsequent Sundays at the same time. Based on the best-selling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, the hit series is an epic story of treachery and nobility set on the continent of Westeros, where summers and winters can last years, and only the lust for power is eternal.

Tell us something about this serial. It is based on the killings of criminals point blank by the police which coined the term ‘encounter’ which grabbed the headlines in the 80’s and 90’s when the police in Mumbai decided to finish off the underworld by shooting gangsters and there was also killing of policemen by criminals not only in Mumbai but also outside Mumbai.

What is your character in 'Encounter'? I will be playing a Muslim character, Shaikh Ali, who will join hands with Manya Surve, the dreaded criminal who was one of the first among gangsters shot in gang wars and police encounters.

How was it like shooting for the serial? I am really excited for the episode. It has been shot beautifully like a film with a Bollywood director, Guru, on board. The look and feel also has been designed amazingly. It was superb fun and a very different experience from what is happening on TV these days. Will you be a part of all the 19 episodes? Right now I have shot only for the first episode but wherever and whenever my character is required I will be shooting for that episode.

How do you feel about Manoj Bajpayee anchoring the show? He is a great anchor and actor but we are far from Mumbai where Manoj is shooting. Our episodes are being shot outside the city.

A lady saviour on TVn

How has your journey been till now? I am from Delhi and I came to Mumbai some years ago and got a few good TV shows and South films and a Hindi film called ‘Men Will Be Men’. I am very happy with the way my career is heading.

Are you open to reality shows? Yes. Today reality shows are very popular and I would love to be a part of them. What kind of TV serials do you like to watch? I don’t watch much TV except for news based shows and travel shows and channels like Discovery Channel.

Your role models and inspirations? Amitabh Bachchan, of course and Aamir Khan who does so much hard work on his characterisations. This ‘Encounter’ with Rohit was really a powerful one!

The all-new ‘Gangs of Hasseepur’ on Zee TV By Sandeep Hattangadi

G

uys, there’s a new “nonpolitical” party being formed on the eve of elections and it has only one promise that it intends to live up to – That of making you laugh! Fikar mat…this one’s not about to stand you up like the rest! After all, this special party is nothing but Zee TV’s first-of-its-kind variety comedy show. Be it your classic Indian style hasya kawis who’ll make you laugh at the very life issues that make you cry or new-age stand-up comedians whose hilarious spoofs will bring you the asli chehras of some of the most talked about netas, actors

and sports figures, ‘Gangs of Hasseepur’ has all that it takes to tickle your funny bone! Peppered with anecdotes plucked out of your own life, 'Gangs of Hasseepur' will see funnymen Raju Shrivas-

tav and Suresh Menon leaving viewers in splits with their witty punches and comic timing. Comedienne Bharti Singh will add her own flavor of masti to all the madness on the show.

The gorgeous Mandira Bedi will don the hat of judge on the show. With rib-tickling impersonations of famous personalities and spoofs on topical issues that affect public life, here’s a show that seems set to make you fall off your chairs! Speaking about the new show, Zee TV Programming Head Namit Sharma said, “'Gangs of Hasseepur' is a melting pot of diverse styles of humour presented by different types of comedians. In addition to stand-up heavyweights like Suresh and Raju, the show will feature some of the finest stand-up talent from across the country.

‘Lapataganj’ on Sab TV is a lively series which shows daily life in a small village and the funny happenings amongst the different families that reside there. In the recent track of 'Lapataganj', viewers will be surprised by the turn of events. Mary, played by Shilpa Shinde in the series, saves Lakhan, played by Vinit Raina, a Dabaang inspector from an accidental fire. Shilpa said, “I am a complete movie buff and have grown up watching Hindi movies all the time. I love romantic comedies and action thrillers and have always seen climaxes which have concluded in the hero saving the heroine. In the recent track of 'Lapataganj', I will be rescuing Vinit from a fire which makes me the saviour.”

Rain dance

Rajan Shahi's ‘Aur Pyar Ho Gaya’ on Zee is gaining popularity day by day. On March 8, they shot a rain sequence where Raj (Mishkat Sharma) and Avni (Kanchi Singh) will be seen dancing. In the sequence, while going back to Avni's house, it suddenly starts raining and Avni who loves rains instantly begins enjoying it and dancing. Raj mesmerised by her innocence joins in too. Though the sequence was shot in day light, it was really difficult for the actors to stay wet for the scene as the sequence demanded them to be back to Avni's house drenched. A woman’s fight

'Halla Bol', on Bindass, this week revolves around Radhika, a young woman who shifted to Pune for higher studies and became a victim of molestation. Radhika stays with her elder brother in Pune, who works as a junior doctor under Dr. Khurana in a hospital. One day, her brother Nishant took her to Dr. Khurana as she was suffering from severe stomach pain. Radhika was reluctant to spend the night at the hospital but being a concerned brother, Nishant convinced her to get admitted. As soon as he left, just what she feared happened. Radhika was frightened and unsure about her next step, therefore she consulted her friend. They finally informed her brother about the incident and the three of them planned a trap to reveal the doctor’s true colours.

YUVRAJ DID NOT DESERVE THIS UNWARRANTED CRITICISM: PIETERSEN

By Kushan Sarkar

EW DELHI: Once labelled a 'pie-chucker' by Kevin Pietersen, beleaguered Yuvraj Singh has found support from the maverick batsman, who says the India left-hander is at the receiving end of "unwarranted criticism" following his scratchy knock in the World T20 final. Yuvraj's 21-ball 11 sucked the momentum out of India's innings on Sunday and some unruly fans pelted stones at the all-rounder's residence in Chandigarh. India lost the title clash to Sri Lanka by six wickets. Standing behind Yuvraj, who is now a friend, Pietersen said: "I haven't read the newspapers here but what I have seen on twitter is that he has got a bit of stick. I think that it was unwarranted and he did not deserve this."

Former India players such as Kris Srikkanth and Ravi Shastri had critical of Yuvraj's batting, prompting Pietersen to say that it's "very easy to say things" when one is not an active international cricketer. "You can't always be good. It's very easy to say things when you stop playing. I see a lot of players talking who don't even play international cricket and wished they were playing, have a lot of things to say. Because criticising is the easiest thing to do," he told PTI during an exclusive interaction. Set to lead Delhi Daredevils in the upcoming seventh edition of Indian Premier league, Pietersen is happy that he will have to face a selection dilemma when it comes to having his pick between 'Million Dollar Man' Dinesh Karthik and the new South African sensation Quinton de Kock when they

kickstart their campaign. While De Kock has made grand entry into international cricket, Karthik's Rs 12.5 crore bidding makes him slightly favourite to get the nod. "Of course, it is good to have selection dilemmas as it is quite a good thing to have. I kind of enjoy having selection dilemmas. You have got to hate the fact that you can only choose from only 11 players. You should be wanting that your squad of 16 is ready to have a go. It will be a difficult pick for the first match but we would certainly settle down with time," he said.

BCCI seeks to examine Dhoni deposition before Mudgal Committee The BCCI has moved Supreme Court seeking permission to examine MS Dhoni's deposition before the Mudgal Committee that is investigating the Indian Premier League betting and fixing scandal. The BCCI wants to monitor the audio recordings of the Indian skipper, N Srinivasan, who has stepped aside as board chief and IPL COO Sundar Raman. The apex court has listed the matter for Friday. Senior advocate Harish Salve, who has been representing Aditya Verma of the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), had earlier accused the Chennai Super Kings captain of lying about the role of Srinivasan's son-in-law

Gurunath Meiyappan in betting and match-fixing scandal during the last edition of the cash-rich league.

"Dhoni lied about Gurunath Meiyappan role; there was no need for Dhoni to lie and it is important to have independent probe into the IPL irregularities," Salve had earlier told CNN-IBN after the Supreme Court ordered sweeping changes in BCCI's administration. The Indian board, however, has defended Dhoni saying that he has done no wrong and is innocent. The Supreme Court ordered Srinivasan to step aside as BCCI president, while installing lSunil Gavaskar as working president but only for the duration of IPL 7. For issues related to the BCCI, the SC appointed Shivlal Yadav as the board president.

his performance in 2013. The 28-year-old Dhawan was the highest run-scorer during India's triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy, amassing 363 runs in five ODIs at an average of 90.75. He was awarded Man of the Series for his performance that included centuries against South Africa and West Indies. His performance during the tournament in England was acknowledged by Wisden, which also named Australian duo Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris, England batsman Joe Root and England women's captain Charlotte Edwards in the list. Opener Rogers, fast bowler Harris and Root were chosen for their contributions to the 2013 Ashes, while Edwards was acknowledged for leading the English side to the finals of the recent World Twenty20.

TENDULKAR NAMED MUMBAI INDIANS 'ICON' MUMBAI: Defending champions Mumbai Indians today named batting great Sachin Tendulkar as their "ICON" ahead of the seventh Indian Premier League beginning in the UAE on April 16. "We are very happy to have Sachin as the Mumbai Indians ICON. I am sure the youngsters in the team will be delighted to have him around for guidance, and so would be the Mumbai Indians fans," team owner Nita Ambani said in a statement. Tendulkar was icon player of the Mumbai Indians since the first edition in 2008 before he went on to win the title in his last IPL in 2013.

five build-up games -- including two against World Cup hosts The Netherlands and one against Belgium. During the tour, India will also play two games against Dutch national clubs at the same turf where World Cup matches will be held. Sardar felt the tour will be a makeor-break for many players, who are hoping to secure berths in the World Cup squad. "The tour will be a good exposure for us ahead of the World Cup because we will play and train on the same pitch and we are hoping to reap rich dividends out of it. The tour will give us an idea about the climatic conditions and most importantly the pitch," the skipper said.

EW DELHI: Sardar Singh and Sandeep Singh are best of friends on and off the field but the current India captain sounded realistic as he said that it will be a tall order for the out-of-favour dragflicker to make it to the World Cup-bound squad. Sardar said it was heartening to witness healthy competition for places in the Indian hockey team at present, which means no player is a sure-shot pick for the World Cup to be held at The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 to June 15. "It is good to see tough fight for spots in the team. So no player, how experienced he is, can be certain about his place in the team. Even though I am the captain my place too is not guaranteed," Sardar told PTI in an interview before leaving for a preparatory tour to Europe. "There is immense competition in the team. There are 3-4 players in every position which is healthy for Indian hockey," he said. "Sandeep is out of the team for quite a while now. But he is a class act and has shown his

prowess in the Hockey India League, where he became the top-scorer for the second consecutive time. But frankly speaking, it would be tough for Sandeep (to seal a berth in World Cup team). He needs to put in more hard work and come with performance in the ongoing national camp to be in contention," Sardar observed. Citing his own example, Sardar said even though he is currently the

captain of the side, his place in the squad is not certain. "Not only Sandeep it will be tough for every player to make it to the team, including me. At the end of the day it will depend on form and fitness," the ace mid-fielder said. Pistorius: Reeva ‘died while I was holding her’

By Neil Joshi

M P

RETORIA: Oscar Pistorius returned to the witness stand today, giving horrifying testimony about his vain attempts to stem girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's blood loss and save her life using plastic bags and utility tape. "I was really trying to stop the bleeding, I was really trying to help Reeva breathe," said Pistorius, still struggling to retain his composure on a third day of testimony. "I was trying to hold Reeva's head with my hand to put pressure on it," he said, outlining the brutal and ultimately fatal results of gunshots to the hip, arm, hand and head. "Reeva had already died while I was holding her," he said. "There was nothing more I could do for her." Pistorius returned to the stand after breaking down uncontrollably yesterday while testifying that he fired four shots at Steenkamp through a toilet door, and then found her lifeless body. Pistorius claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, but has been charged with her murder on Valentine's Day last year. "I was overcome with fear," the athlete had testified in a trembling voice. "Before I knew it, I'd fired four shots at the door," he said, describing his actions after he thought an intruder had made a noise in the bathroom in the dead of night. Pistorius has been called as a witness in his own defence. Today he continued with a firsthand account of what happened after emergency responders arrived. It is possible prosecutor Gerrie Nel will start crossexamination later in the day, in what would likely be a tough experience for the 27-year-old. Pistorius faces a life sentence if found guilty of murdering 29year-old Steenkamp. The Olympian's initial evidence focused on countering the prosecution's portrayal of him as reckless and obsessed with fast cars and guns. From Monday defence lawyer Barry Roux had gently painted the portrait of a young man marked by a fatherless childhood, the early death of his mother, physical disability and recurring crime. Pistorius had begun his second day of testimony with a description of how he met the vivacious law graduate and how they quickly grew closer.

UMBAI: India's huge win against the South Koreans has got the Indian tennis circuit buzzing not because of main singles player Somdev Devarman but because India would be up against the mighty Serbian side which may feature its top star, indomitable Novak Djokovic. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi weren't part of the win against the Koreans. However, the word is out that Bhupathi could be a serious candidate for a specialised doubles squad if India intends making it a trifle tough for the Serbian side. Speaking during the racquet manufacturer, Wilson's event at the Cricket Club of India, Bhupathi said that he was available to play in the doubles squad as he feels that the doubles match will be crucial to India’s chances of making an impact in their home game. “I am always available. I know the captain's talked about the same just like the coach has. I think it is important because the doubles will be pivotal in that match, so lets see how things pan out,” said Bhupathi. Commending the Indian team on an impressive win in Korea where India had earlier hadn't won a tie, Bhupathi said Somdev Devvarman and the rest of the Davis Cup team put on an amazing show. “It is very exciting. We have not beaten Korea in Korea before. I have been part of many teams that has been to Korea and have come back disappointed because it is so hard to beat those guys there. I think Somdev and the boys did amazingly well and this a chance to play in the World Group,” he said. Bhuapthi who is currently ranked 47th in the ATP Doubles Ranking said playing Serbia sans Novak Djokovic would make life easier for the Indian contingent. “Any opponent is difficult in Davis Cup. Once teams come to India anything is possible I feel, so we are looking to play a good home tie. It

Tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi during at promotional event at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday. is so far away, it's in September, we don't know who is playing for them and who is playing for us. Unfortunately, Yuki [Bhambri] was injured during the last tie. Ideally, we need to field a full strength team to have a chance to upset one of the power houses of tennis. Ideally, for us if Novak [Djokovic] doesn't show up I think life could become easier,” he added. Going ahead to the Asian Games

where India has fared well, he said, “We have always been a power house when it comes to the Asian Games. I know when I played in Doha we won all the medals and also in Guangzhou, we won all the medals. When we go there [Asian Games], we are always considered favourites to win a bunch of medals, so I am sure this time also, no matter what kind of team we field we are always there in contention.”

Depth of our team a concern: Paes By A Sports Reporter

W

hile India constructed a welldeserving victory over South Korea, world number 10 in doubles, Leander Paes feels that the Indian Davis Cup side will have to make immense strides in their singles game as that is what he considers a concern for the Indian team. Speaking at the launch of his 'Brand Leander Ace Coaching Academy' at the Khar Gymkhana, he said the Indian team has dropped in their performance in Davis Cup while acknowledging the other players in the Asian zone have improved in their rankings. “As far as the other go, professional tennis is so competitive especially the physical attributes are so advanced nowadays that for our boys – as the endurance of a match wears on they can get better. As the other countries have developed so much faster, we need to develop real quick. The depth of our team is the real concern as much as we say in doubles we have a few options, ” said Paes. Paes added that there was a need to work on our singles game. “There was a time when India was the number one nation by far in all of Asia. In the last few years we dropped a little bit and we had countries like Japan, Korea that were doing better than us. For us, in the doubles we have quite a few options, as far the singles go, we had a few options there but the quality had to get a lot better. And in that the Korea tie was a good one. The boys did well but at the same time we have a long way to go as far the singles players’ are concerned when up to against the World Group nations.” On the upcoming match against Serbia which is slated for September he signed off, “The next tie is going to be a tough one but kudos to all our boys for a job well done in Korea.”

Games in Montreal, she was the first female gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic event, and it still stands, something that leaves her "happily surprised". Talking about her academy, the Laureus Academy member said, "You can bring 3-4 year-old kids, there is a mini gymnastic room with colourful equipments, we created something that's seen in US. It's a programme that gives opportunity to kids to come and play gymnastics, in States it's very popular, it's really fun for them. Something like that doesn't exist in Romania, it will be a good idea to have one there." In her pursuit, she is being ably supported by her American gymnast husband, Bart Conner. "My husband and I have an academy, we have 1400 gymnasts and about more than 30 coaches and we have a programme like where little kids come with their mummy. The mummy looks through the glass as

the kids enjoy playing gymnastics." A member of the gold medal-winning men's gymnastics team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and an individual gold winner on the parallel bars, Conner was also the 1979 World Champion on the parallel bars. Comaneci is not into full-time coaching as she has to travel a lot because of her commitments to various projects across the world. "All the coaches in our academy are former athletes, for six months we bring a coach from Romania... Most of our kids are local, they don't come from far away places as in US there are 2500 gymnastic clubs and 4-5 million kids doing gymnastics." Comaneci is full of positivity and in her own words, one should "appreciate the goodness around you, and surround yourself with positive people". Coming back to her record, she says she is learning to appreciate it as the years go by.

INGAPORE: India’s ace shuttler Saina Nehwal’s poor form in the international arena continued as she crashed out of the USD 300,000 Singapore Super Series after losing to Eriko Hirose of Japan in a hard-fought three-game battle in her opening round women’s singles match here today. However, other Indians in the fray — B Sai Praneeth, H S Prannoy and P C Thulasi — advanced to the second round of the tournament after registering contrasting victories on the opening day of the main draw. World No. 8 Saina fought for an hour and two minutes before losing 21-16 15-21 11-21 to her lower ranked Japanese rival. The London Olympic bronze medallist hardly had to break sweat in the opening game though. Dominating from the word go, the Hyderabad-based shuttler opened up a 5-2 lead and eventually extended it to 13-4, before wrapping it up 21-16 in style. Saina, seeded seventh, started the second game also well as she took a 4-2 lead. But the Japanese quickly got her act together and from tied 4-4 position, she surged ahead to 10-4. Thereafter, the Indian was always on the backfoot and was playing the catching-up game. Hirose finally stole the game 21-15 to take the match to the decider. In the final game, the Japanese straightaway moved up 5-0 and

continued to maintain a comfortable cushion to seal it off comfortably in the end. In other women’s singles first round matches, Arundhati Pantawane fought hard before going down to another Japanese Shizuka Uchida 21-16 11-21 15-21 in just over an hour, while top seed and Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China made mincemeat of Tanvi Lad in her 21-6 21-11 win. However, P C Thulasi notched up a 21-13 21-16 victory over New Zealand’s Anna Rankin to set up a second round clash with world number two Chinese Yihan Wang. He will next take on Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore. H S Prannoy, too, produced a good performance to prevail over Thailand’s Thammasin Sitthikom 21-17 14-21 2111 in another men’s singles match at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He will be up against fifth seed Pengyu today. But Anand Pawar’s campaign was over as he lost 1021 15-21 to Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia in a 33minute contest. YDNEY: Australia’s triple Beijing Olympic champion Stephanie Rice announced her retirement from competitive swimming. The injuryplagued 25-year-old, who has not competed since an unsuccessful 2012 London Games, has had three shoulder operations. “Coming off the Games, I really didn’t want to make a rash decision on my career and if I was going to keep swimming or not because I was still too emotional,” Rice said. “I knew I had to take the time for myself to get to the point where I knew 100 percent what I wanted to do.” The Queenslander clinched three gold medals and three world records in the 200m and 400m individual medleys and the 4x200m freestyle at the 2008 Olympics. Swimming Australia president John Bertrand paid tribute to Rice.

IN BRIEF PCB’s contract with Mushtaq Ahmed put on hold

KARACHI: The disparity over fees paid to national coaches by the PCB has put on hold an impending contract between the board and former Test leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. “Mushtaq has been offered the position of bowling coach at the national cricket academy but he is not satisfied with the monthly salary being offered to him which is around 300,000 rupees,” a well-informed PCB source told PTI. “Mushtaq who is a qualified coach from the England and Wales cricket board (ECB) and has worked with the English team as spin consultant and coach has asked the board for a better salary package which is around 500,000 rupees,” the source said. He said Mushtaq’s main concern was that if the board was willing to pay foreigner Dav Whatmore around 1.6 million rupees a month to work as head coach, than it should also pay better salary to local coaches who work with the national team and at the national cricket academy.

Umar in another controversy

According to eyewitness accounts, Umar got upset and angry when the security guard didn’t recognise him and told him he couldn’t bring his vehicle into the stadium. “Umar had gone to the PCB headquarters to hand over invitation cards for his wedding later this month. But after the argument with the security guard he left in a huff without delivering the cards,” a source said.

Churchill stay afloat with draw

MARGAO: Churchill Brothers kept themselves afloat for a knock-out round berth in the AFC Cup after playing out a 1-1 draw against Persipura Jayapura on Indonesia in their penultimate group match here today. After a barren first half, Persipura Jayapura, who held better ball possession in both the halves, took the lead in the 77th minute through Boaz Solossa which was cancelled by Churchill Brothers Balwant Singh in the 84th minute in the Group E match played at Nehru Stadium at Fatorda. Churchill Brothers, who kept the pressure in the dying minutes, have themselves to blame for not winning the match as Balwant Singh missed two golden opportunities to score the winner.
