n Wednesday, crime branch officials of unit seven, including an assistant inspector, a sub inspector and three constables, were summoned by the Vakola police for going to a birthday party at Saki Naka on the invitation of a person who was involved in a Rs.55 lakh house break-in case on August 27, 2013. The party was hosted a couple of weeks later, on September 12, by the prime accused in the case, who also Continued on pg 12 «

Where are the guides?
MU’s lack of guides for various subjects prolongs the period taken By Yatin Ingle he initial happiness of students who cleared the to complete PhDs, T PhD entrance exam has been affecting the lives short-lived. While the next step is genthe beginning research of thousands of erally work, students of various subjects have been told that students the Mumbai University has no guides to help them pursue their doctorates. Although most subjects have more than the required number of PhD guides, there are a few that do not have enough guides, thus putting the careers of several students on hold. Students who have been waiting for a PhD guide for almost five years have almost lost all hope of having a guide assigned to them or are planning to pursue their doctorates from open universities. As per a new ordinance for PhD degrees, a candidate should clear the PhD Entrance Test (PET) to be eligible for a PhD degree. If not PET, the aspirant has to clear the State Eligibility Test (SET) or National Eligibility Test (NET) to pursue a PhD. At an
average, around 2,000 students clear the NET/SET and PET exams every year and are eligible for PhDs. However, the students who have cracked the eligibility exams for their PhDs are unable to find a guide for their concerned subjects and have to wait for one to be appointed by the varsity. Dr. Madhu Nair, Member, RRC and Dean of Commerce, says “To have a correct and proper PhD guide, there should be an eligible person for the same. Until and unless the varsity doesn’t find an eligible candidate it cannot finalise on a PhD guide. Many a times, there are very few or no takers for a specific subject for a PhD and hence a guide is not available as there are no students for that subject”. According to the ordinance, a person can be a PhD guide only if he has a PhD in the relevant subject and has research published other than the thesis submitted for his own research degree, which may include articles embodying the results of re-
search or investigations published in recognised journals in which recognition is sought. They must also have two years experience of teaching post-graduate classes or must have guided two Post Graduate students on the approval by the concerned Research and Recognition Committee (RRC) and the Board of University Teaching and Research (BUTR). Dilip Karande, Management Council and Senate Member says, “The officials should look into this matter immediately. Due to the lack of PhDs, degrees have been prolonged and the careers of students have been put on hold. Officials should be concerned about this and act as soon as possible.” At present, MU has 254 recognised research centers for a PhD with 707 PhD guides. Last year, the ADC had also reported that MU had circulated a list of PhD guides which included the names of around 10 PhD guides who had passed away Continued on pg 12 «
Placements, enrolments drop drastically
Hard times for B-Schools By Mayura Shanbaug
W
ith the economic slowdown hitting corporate balance-sheets, a large number of business schools other than the top 15-20 institutions like the IIMs, are going through a hard time owing to a 40-50 per cent drop in campus hiring and almost an equivalent ratio of decline in the number of students opting for fresh admissions. According to The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) paper titled ‘B-Schools are facing the consequences of economic slowdown’ the economic slowdown has negatively impacted campus hiring by 40-50 per cent over the last one year. The salary packages which are offered at B-schools and engineering colleges are also being curtailed by 35-40 per cent as compared to last year. MBA seats in India grew almost four-fold from 95,000 in 2006-07 to 3,60,000 in
2011-12, resulting in a fiveyear compounded annual growth rate of 30 per cent. Unfortunately, job opportunities for MBAs have not grown in the same proportion, as the period coincides with the global financial slowdown. The MBA capacity in the country was built based on the projection of a 9 to 10 per cent economic growth rate. D.S. Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM said, “Recruitments at the campus have gone down drastically. As a result, a large number of B-schools and engineering colleges are not able to attract students. More than 190 Bschools have already closed down in 2012 in major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmadabad, Kolkata, Luknow, Dehradun and others.” Another 165 are struggling for survival, reveals the ASSOCHAM report.

On the directions of the Bombay High Court, the Mumbai Division of the Public Works Department (PWD) started clearing the isolated Shakti Mills compound where a young photojournalist was gang-raped in July. Earth movers and JCB have been deployed at the site to clear the ground. In the first phase, bushes and trees below 10ft of heright and those growing in the mill, are being removed to enable security guards to patrol the area. The court has been told by the PWD that the total clean-up project of the Shakti Mills compound will go up to Rs.1.5 crore. Lumpur”. In 2010, the Burj Al Khalifa (2717 feet) was completed. That’s the year the markets collapsed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to banker Andrew Lawrence of the Skyscraper Index fame, these buildings herald an economic boom that “typically ends in a large recession”. The world’s next record breaking building is coming up in Changsa, Southern China, and is being built by an ambitious billionaire who wants it to be five feet taller than the Burj Al Khalifa. The economist, Mark Thornton, and the banker both think that perhaps China will be the centre of the downturn. Which is a bit of a relief for us! World One may be a monster building where we are concerned, but compared with China’s Sky City, it is like a rising pimple on the face of the earth.
What was that, again?
BBC reporter Mishal Husain speaks to Ziauddin Yousuzai and daughter Malala in their London home. Her first interview is to be aired this weekend.
Malala this weekend
AT 3 p.m., like any other day, she and her friends took the bus home from school. “I love to go on foot”, she explained, “but my mother told me you must not go on foot now and you must go in a bus so then you will be safe.” “I was just talking to Moniba and having a gossip… everything seemed as normal part of life…. But when we went just further, I could see that there was no one at that time. And then I don’t remember what happened.” Although Malala doesn’t remember the attack itself, her friends Shazia, Moniba and Kainat recall the events well. They spoke to Mishal when she visited the Swat valley for Panorama and recalled how two boys boarded their school bus as it slowed down to navigate a bend in the road on the way to Malala’s home. “One of them came round the back and asked: Who is Malala Yousafzai?” said Shazia. “She was very scared at the time, she didn’t say anything”, Moniba added. “Then he fired straight at her. I saw a lot of blood on Malala’s head. When I saw that blood, I fell unconscious”, said Kainat. “My clothes, my shoes, my socks, my pouch, my books, all was just full of blood”, said Moniba. “Malala’s blood.” Watch BBC World News this weekend, for its show“Panorama: Shot For Going To School”. This is the first and exclusive interview of Malala Yousafzai since she was attacked by the Taliban. Saturday October 12 at 9.40
am, 10.40pm and Sunday October 13, at 3.40pm.
Skyscraper curse?
EVERYONE does it and so do we. Whenever we drive over the flyovers on Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel, we look right or left, depending on whether we are coming or going. Then we marvel at the fact that the rough and ready
rounds of World One under construction and clearly within sight, will morph into the world’s second tallest residential building, 117 floors and 1450 feet high, projected to cost more than USD 310 to be built on a plot that is 17.5 acres in area. All this by some time next year and frankly we find it difficult to believe. After all, we are talking about a lifestyle completely divorced from the reality of Mumbai and that reality is just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the project which opens out into the crowds of the city. But that is completely another issue.
What concerns us is the import of an article we read in an August issue of the Christian Science Monitor that quotes a Skyscraper Index and an American economist who has studied the correlation between the erection of recordbreaking buildings and “spectacular economic busts”! For examples, there is the Empire State Building (1,250 feet) which was completed on the eve of the Great Depression. Just before the Asian financial crises, the twin Petronas Towers (1,483 feet) “rose through the skyline in the Malaysian capital of Kuala

Borivli National Park and the animals within
IT’S only a matter of time before it happens, or perhaps it already has. For years now, young couples have been going to Mumbai’s green lung, the national park, there to find a little privacy in shelters just off the tarred roads that lead from the entrance right up to the Kanheri Caves. For years, they have been preyed upon by people, many of them staffers of the park itself, out to make a quick buck. The usual modus operandi is to choose a couple a little beyond the reach of the public, to surround them and accuse them of indecent behavior, then to demand money for not reporting them. Needless to say, these sums of money are always forthcoming.
THE Thought Company is observing Mental Health Awareness Weekend this Saturday and Sunday at Carter Road in Bandra and we have this press note from them. “The Mental Health Awareness Week-end will be packed with two days of programs to be handled by experienced professionals, two days of education on common mental disorders, two days of understanding through different mediums, two days of changing perceptions and demystifying counseling. “The Thought Company also plans sessions on music and art therapy, emotional freedom technique, therapeutic yoga, mood disorders, understanding schizophrenia, mood and food, Mind and body connection, suicide prevention workshop, dealing with burnouts, coping with anxiety, chaos to calm, understanding autism spectrum disorder and occupational therapy. In short it will be two days fun.” Now that’s a description of fun that we have never, ever come across!
A picture of fun and the joys of a national park with its own toy train carrying visitors around. But there are some parts of this pretty picture that are dark.
So how long will it be before these assaults upon privacy, fuelled by a desire for the same,
are taken to the next level? How long before a Shakti Mill sort of situation begins to prevail here?
Or perhaps the unspeakable has already happened and we don’t even know about it.

MBMC seals ‘affordable’ amusement park for non-payment of dues
he first ‘affordable’ amusement-cum-theme park in Mira Road has landed into trouble after the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), on Tuesday sealed the electric sub-station room for non-payment of monthly rentals. he Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai’s crime branch made its first arrest on Wednesday with regard to the ongoing probe into the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) Rs.5, 600-crore payment crisis.
“The accused, Amit Mukherjee, Vice-President of Business Development, NSEL, was arrested for taking kickbacks,” confirmed Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy. Also, the arrest of Anjani Sinha, MD and CEO of NSEL is imminent said sources in the EOW adding that he is likely to appear before the EOW on Thursday. “Mukherjee’s role can be well explained in the scam after his custodial interrogation,” said Roy, adding that his interrogation can unravel the roles of other top officials at NSEL. “On Wednesday, Mukherjee appeared before the EOW and after questioning he was placed under arrest,” said Additional CP (EOW) Rajvardhan Sinha. The arrest took place a day after investigators
recorded the statement of Jignesh Shah, Chairman and Managing Director of Financial Technologies (FT) that promotes NSEL, along with other directors Joseph Massey, Shreekant Javalgekar and Dewang Neralla. “According to sources, Shah had blamed Mukherjee and former MD and CEO Anjani Sinha for the entire fraud.
Mukherjee had introduced new members, investors, clients and companies to the NSEL, including those firms that defaulted in payments,” said another officer. Mukherjee had also received kickbacks from various companies including, Mohan India, one of the largest borrowers at the exchange, added the sources.
Mukherjee’s role in the scam: 1) Mukherjee was the head of Business Development at NSEL 2) He introduced buyers with bad credentials into the NSEL system. 3) He did not inform the management of a possible diversion of funds into real estate, etc. 4) He also did not inform the management about the nonavailability of stock or the pledge of stock with other lenders and allowed the buyers to siphon-off funds.
Brief background of Mukherjee 1) Cost to Company (CTC): Rs. 19 lakh 2) Assets: Flat at Mira Road: 3 BHK Flat at Mira Road: 1 BHK Car - Volkswagen Polo (Rs.8 lakh) - in his name Car - Range Rover (Rs.70 lakh) - in wife's name (Registered in Haryana) 3) Several bank accounts in (HDFC) at various branches: Vile Parle, Thakur Village and Kandivli (East). 4) Pan Card no: AGQPM7786D 5) Mohan India, one of the largest borrowers at the exchange, claimed that they have paid crores to Mukherjee and his wife. O
n Wednesday, a commuter who was travelling in a handicapped compartment assaulted a woman Home Guard and threatened to kill her when she asked him to get off at Kurla station. Sudhir Kumar Lalmohan Mahato (31), a Central Railway employee, was travelling on a Kalyan-CST local in the handicapped compartment. One of the commuters who noticed that he was a non-handicapped, called up the Government Railway Police (GRP)
helpline and complained about it. When the train reached Kurla, Swati Vasant Etam, a woman home guard and her colleague Suryakant Sunil Shejwal asked Mahato to alight at Kurla station, but he refused to get off. When the homeguards tried to get Mahato off at the station, he pushed Etam and caught her by the neck threatening to kill her and punched Shejwal too. According to Shivaji Dhumal, Senior Police Inspector, GRP, “Sudhir Kumar Mahato has been arrested under Sec-
tion 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), Section 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and Section 506(B)(Punishment for criminal intimidation ) under the Indian Penal Code. Fellow commuters who noticed the Home Guards being assaulted by Mahato tried to help them and handed over the accused to the GRP at Kurla station. The accused has been remanded to police custody and will be produced before the court today.

Vignesh was attacked from behind and his maternal aunt claims that the teenager’s father could be the attacker, considering his differences with Vignesh’s mother

S
ixteen-year-old Vignesh Bagle, a resident of Dharavi, was attacked with acid on Tuesday evening and the family alleges that the assailant is Chandrakant Bagle (55), the father of the boy. Chandrakant lives in Airoli. Speaking about the incident on Tuesday, Vignesh’s aunty Indu Khandare said, “This incident took place at around 6.45 pm on Tuesday when Vignesh was on his way back home from tuitions. Someone threw acid on his back. He was in so much pain that he did not even look behind to see who had attacked him. He started running for help. When he was running towards Sion Hospital, he was stopped by a stranger who asked the reason for running the way he was. Vignesh told him about the attack and also

used his mobile phone to inform us about it. Vignesh got himself admitted at Sion Hospital. Nobody helped him”. Vignesh, who is a science student at Keerti college, lives with his mother at his maternal aunt Indu’s place at Dharavi ever since he was a child as his father Chandrakant used to have frequent fights with his mother Irabai. “Chandrakant was of a suspicious nature and would beat Irabai for no reason at all. Being fed up of Chandrakant’s behaviour, she and Vignesh came over to my place and started living with us. This happened when Vignesh was in his Class II. Chandrakant who later filed for a divorce, wanted Vignesh to be with him but the former refused. We did not want Vignesh’s life to be spoilt staying with a man like Chandrakant. Also, after tak-
ing care of Vignesh like my own child for these many years, how can I just hand him over to his father”, said Indu. Indu then speculated that this might be the reason behind Vignesh’s attack and that the assailant might be Chandrakant or one of his paternal uncles. “We feel that his father might have attacked him to seek revenge”, said Indu. Vignesh is currently admitted at the BMC-run Sion Hospital for burns. “His back is burnt. But he seems alright now”, said Indu. “The boy was admitted with 10 to 15 per cent superficial burns on his back. He is fine now and will be discharged in a day or so. The wounds should heal within seven to ten days”, said Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean, Sion Hospital. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hanif Sayyed (20), a local resident. His body bore multiple injuries and his head was smashed with a boulder. Following investigations, the police arrested Iqbal’s two close friends for their suspected involvement in the crime, while one of their accomplices is still at large. The brutal murder was reportedly the fallout of a monetary dispute between Iqbal and his friends. A case was registered under section 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rahul Gandhi does need a new tutor

Ponder awhile... Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers. — Aristotle
Rahul’s counter move against Modi in UP I
n the last elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress was routed. The poll campaign then was led by Rahul Gandhi. Completely humiliated, Rahul did not show himself in public for quite a while. It was a big blow to his prestige. The situation in Bihar now has completely changed. He will campaign in Uttar Pradesh but this time his campaign is likely to be successful. He will now receive support from unexpected sources: Mulayam Singh Yadav’s SP likely to give him all possible assistance in making his poll campaigning smooth and easy. They are all friends now that the disproportionate assets case against him has been closed. What is to be noted is that other parties are not likely to get the same kind of cooperation which the Congress will get. For instance, the Sangh Parivar’s bid to take a procession to Ayodhya was not allowed. Later, a rally was banned. The UP government’s excuse is that such bans are being imposed in order to avoid communal trouble. It is likely to keep, for instance, Vishwa Hindu Parishad out of the poll fray. The BJP’s prime minister designate, Narendra Modi, is expected to address rallies in Uttar Pradesh. The state government cannot prevent him from going ahead with his campaign. Narendra Modi had been drawing huge crowds as he went about his poll campaign during the last few days across the country. It is to be seen whether he will be equally successful in holding rallies and conducting his campaign in Uttar Pradesh also.

VERY time Rahul Gandhi makes a new political statement it takes me a while to work out if he is being ironic or serious. This sense of confusion has tripled after he expressed his views on the state of India’s most deprived and oppressed community: Dalits. Speaking of the need for Dalit empowerment the Congress Party’s young prince said the community must learn to use an ‘escape velocity’. Then he explained more fully. ‘Aeronautics mein ek escape velocity ka concept hota hai. Escape velocity matlab agar aap ne dharti sey space mein jana hai...agar aap hamari dharti pe hai to 11.2 km per second aap ki velocity honi padegi...Yahaan Hindustan mein hamara jaat ka concept hai. Is mein bhi escape velocity hoti hai. Dalit community ko is dharti pey Jupiter ki escape velocity chahiye.’ These are the exact words I read in the Times of India and reports in other newspapers confirmed that he had said words to this effect. In English what Rahul’s words mean is that Dalit community needs to escape its awful position in the caste system by using the velocity that is needed to escape the gravitational pull of Jupiter.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2013
other political pundits have interpreted Rahul’s ‘nonsense’ intervention. After a very long time two of our most important political weeklies thought him worthy of being put on the cover. One of them even suggested that his ‘idealism’ was a ‘game changer’. Columnists of more leftist bent went further and wove a pinko-hued tale of how Rahul was leading a rebellion against the ‘old guard’ in the Congress Party much like his grandmother did when she broke the party to create the Congress (I). It is a dream that Delhi’s leftist intellectuals have nurtured fondly ever since the process of economic liberalisation began. They consider the past two decades an aberration and would like India to go back to what used to be derisively called the ‘Hindu rate of growth’ and they would like the Congress Party to declare that it remains a socialist party that has no taste for the sort of economic reforms that Dr. Manmohan Singh instituted to save India from bankruptcy in
On-the-job training will help
He needs to be less reckless Now what exactly did the Congress Party’s heir apparent mean by this? Did he mean that despite more than 60 years of his family’s benign, Dalit-friendly, rule India has remained such a bad place for Dalits that they should now look out for themselves? Did he mean that the caste system needed the addition of ‘escape velocity’ to propel the lower castes out of it? Or was he just being ironic? I do not know. But, this is not the first time I have been puzzled by Rahul Gandhi’s political and economic ideas. I was very puzzled when he declared recently that poverty in India was a ‘state of mind’. As for the ‘nonsense’ press conference I would be understating the case if I said it left me flummoxed. He has since gone out of his way to say that he was right to say what he did because there is ‘no right time to tell the truth.’ This is not a good enough explanation because what we really need to know is why his mother’s government was trying so hard to impose upon the people of India a law that was nonsensical. At this point I must say that this is not how
T
poor out of poverty because it is the only party that works only for the poor. If this is not the same old ‘gharibi hatao’ stuff that we heard from his grandmother then what is it? Now the thing is that with Narendra Modi rampaging across the length and breadth of the country making thunderous speeches to vast crowds it is true that Rahul has to take him on. He was not made vice-president of Congress at the beginning of this year for nothing. Incidentally, his statement in Jaipur about power being ‘poison’ is one of the only things he has ever said that made complete sense to me. It made me realise that he had grown up with a sense of entitlement so ingrained that he has forgotten that entering politics should not be about power but about service. It is a very bad idea to talk about serving the people of India as the equivalent of drinking from a poisoned chalice. But, I digress. The point I am trying to make is that surely there are people in the Congress Party’s think tanks who can explain to Rahul that he needs to be less reckless when he tosses his ideas around.
ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh 1991. This would mean a return to central planning and the license raj and there are many Congress men and women close to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi who openly state that they want this to happen. So it is not a movement that moves forward but backwards. And, the question we need to ask of the man who is the undeclared prime ministerial hope of the Congress Party is why he sounds so much like his grandmother once did when he is not declaring poverty a ‘state of mind’. Since making this declaration he has given many speeches explaining how it is only the Congress Party that can lift the

MATTER & SPIRIT
There is no point in telling the Dalit community that they must work towards their own empowerment by ‘escape velocity’ because Dalit leaders have tried to use an escape clause forever. For hundreds of years now Dalits have been trying to escape the horrors of the Hindu caste system by converting to Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam. It is India’s great shame that the idea of caste is so deeply entrenched in the psyche of most Indians that even when Dalits convert to other religions they do not escape discrimination. This is why it is wrong for a political leader who has grown up in the salubrious safety of Lutyens’ Delhi to give them lectures on what they should be doing to improve their miserable lot. There is no point either in spending long, uncomfortable nights in Dalit homes because it leaves even non-Dalit commentators confused about the point you are trying to make. So can some grownups please take over Rahul Gandhi’s political training? With elections looming closer every day he needs as much on-the-job training as he can get before it is too late. Culmination of Energies Her face reflected the light of Shiva, her ten arms were from the light of Lord Vishnu, her feet were from the light of Lord Brahma, the tresses were formed from the light of Yama, the God of death and the two breasts were formed from the light of Somanath, the Moon God, the waist from the light of Indra, the King of Gods, the legs and thighs from the light of Varun, the God of Sea and hips from the light of Bhoodev (Earth), the toes from the light of Surya (Sun God), fingers of the hand from the light of the Vasus, the children of Goddess River Ganga and nose from the light of Kuber, the keeper of wealth for the Gods. The teeth were formed from the light of Prajapati, the lord of creatures; the Triad of her eyes was born from the light of Agni, the Fire God, the eyebrows from the two Sandhyas, ie, sunrise and sunset, the ears from the light of Vayu, the God of Wind. As she was made from the female energies of devas and demigods, she was aptly named Shakti. The name Durga was given to her after she had killed a demon named Durg. (To be continued...)

Andhra Pradesh chaos was easily avoidable THIS is with reference to your edit ‘Situation in Andhra going out of control’ (ADC, Oct 9). As you have pointed out, the UPA government resisted pressure for a long while and did not concede the demand for a separate state and therefore its decision now to give its approval cannot be said to be a hasty step. One remembers that the TRS president, K. Chanderasekhara Rao agreed to join the UPA-I coalition and also be a member of its Cabinet in 2004 on the express promise given to him that his long-standing demand for a separate Telangana would be conceded. But this promise was not kept and so he left the coalition and the ministry in utter disappointment. In retrospect one feels that it would have been a lot better if Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh then itself. The
Mulayam’s plan unfeasible THE Samajwadi Party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav is a shrewd politician and a master tactician. But, while talking about the elusive Third Front, he seems to have missed an important point. According to him, the conglomerate would be formed after the declaration of
garh, Uttaranchal and Uttarakhand — and they have all settled down smoothly. The people of Andhra Pradesh will do well to sink their differences and allow the government to give effect to its decision before its term expires in a few months. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
OPPORTUNITY MISSED: It would have been a lot better if Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2004 itself as was planned by the then UPA I govt. political scenario in the state has changed quite a lot in these nine years so much so that differences among the various parties have become irreconcilable mostly because no party wants to lose Hyalso in Delhi. Modi’s calculated moves caught Congress on the wrong foot and hence Chidambaram is trying to resurrect some prestige to his party by airing his personal opinion. It appears as though P. Chidambaram is rather childish in his chequered career. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada
Tainted ministers, et al
WRONG MOVE: Mulayam Singh does not realise that if the Third Front is formed after the 2014 polls, getting the required numbers to form the govt. would be next to impossible . the results of the April/ May 2014 Lok Sabha polls. This means that the would-be constituents of the Third Front will be fighting the elections against each other as separate entities, thereby splitting the votes among themselves. In other words, they would not be even able to reach a final tally of three digit number. It will then be a case of an abortion rather than a full term delivery. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
FM’s chequered career P. CHIDAMBARAM could not digest and see the popularity of Narendra Modi and he minced words and issued a statement that Modi is popular only in some pockets. As a senior minister he should not open his mouth as his election to Lok Sabha is still contested and the case is still going on. Having been declared as defeated from the Sivaganga constituency, the Finance Minister got a second lease of life as some fictitious methods helped him to get his MP post. Now he is talking about Captain Marvel Modi as though he is not a force to reckon with. Chidambaram could not see Modi making waves in Political circle in his own state, other states and

BELATED though, I support implicitly Rahul Gandhi’s vantage points: no support and protest against keeping and/or recruiting new hands whose characters are ‘blood stained’! Indeed, how can we support rapists/dacoits/thieves -- one shudders even to think such culprits in the sacred precincts of our Parliament House! No it cannot and must not happen anymore! Indeed, those who are our leaders are role models – should our children emulate them and become rogues? No way. Such nonsense and nauseating things should end right away. I also respect President Pranab Mukherji’s outright refusal to sign the nonsensical issue and stall the move by the ministers in absentia of the PM. — P. Chakravorty, Fort
Jwala does not deserve ban ‘FORMER players call life ban recommendation on Jwala harsh’ (ADC, Oct 8), reveals indeed a very hasty and harsh way of penalty proposed for this unfortunate shuttler. In this country many cricketers escape unscathed even after getting involved in match fixing, a condemned crime as it ruins OF the sanctity of the game. LETTER THE DAY In this case, Jwala’s behaviour prior to the start of that particular match was not in a sports person like manner, however for that kind of questionable attitude she could have been warned verbally and cautioned thereby that she may face stern action in future under such circumstances. The BAI should reconsider this recommendation and save this player from the total doom in her career. If a ban is imposed on her it would ruin her career for the rest of her life. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
Beeter be safe than sorry DANDIYA and Garba Ras are colourful events but have turned
derabad. It will be good for the people of Andhra to take note of the fact that so many smaller states have been carved out of their bigger parents in recent years — Jharkahand, Chhattispale over the years due to misconception, commercialisation and social media connections for all the wrong reasons that has removed religious sentiment from festivities. Open sex in car parks and every available space has become the order of the day and statistics of high sale of contraceptives and emergency pills during ‘Navratri’ nights only go to prove the point. Illicit and extra-marital affairs are on the rise due to What’s App, Facebook and other social media sites where young as well as old are hooked on to round the clock and ‘Navratri’ gives people reason to mingle during odd hours during festivities. Education is the need of the hour and it is always better to be safe than sorry. Counseling too is a must both for teenagers as well as adults so that Dandiya and Garba can be played with fun rather than with
TELEGANA issue is taking a serious turn and after fast and agitation now Seemandhra burns and power cut was felt in Andhra Pradesh due to employees of electricity department joining the agitation. DUSSEHRA is celebrated all over India by Hindus. In Dombivili, where I reside, very loud music and dancing goes on even after 12.00 midnight, in spite of the deadline being 10.00 p.m. Complaining to the police does not help, as they (the police) keep favouring the organisers. Some of them (the police) even take money from the organisers to keep the music and dancing going till late in the night. Christians too should be allowed to play music in the church halls or in the open space of the church compounds after 10.00 p.m. during weddings. If the police have made a rule, it should apply to all communities. They shouldn’t favour people
Control prices of onion IF the prices of onion are hovering around Rs. 60 per kg, it is not due to the farmers having had to bring water in tankers to their fields during drought, incurring additional expendtiure as Sharad Pawar would like us to believe. All media reports point to the deliberate delay by the traders in releasing the onion stock. The price of onion going up has been an annual ritual. It is also known that the traders buy vegetables including onion at one-fourth the price at which they are sold and make huge profits. The traders also should realise that they have a responsibility to the public and curb the tendency to fleece the common man at the slightest opportunity. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
Pak army’s cowardly acts in J&K THERE seems to be clear evidence that the Pak Army had intruded in the Keran sector of the J&K in different attires so that the Pak Govt., could ‘distance’ itself from the attacks attributing it to the ‘terrorists’ which out-fits are beyond their control. This ‘intrusion’ seems to have begun on September 23 itself and prolonged for 15 long days. Hence, the attacks by the Pak Army in disguise were ‘on inside India in J&K’ when the PM was said to have been talking to Pak PM in the US and it is not known whether our PM raised this issue and advised Pak PM to immediately stop this brazen and highly objectionable act. There seems to be no statement even after 15 days either from the PM or the Defence Minister or the M/o External Affairs on such a sensitive issue of National security. Further, the matter of concern is the ‘time taken’ by the Indian Army to demolish about 40 terrorists, that is, nearly a fortnight. It is also learnt that the Chinese Army is also close to our border which seems to be giving ‘undue’ courage to the Pak Army who seem to have their own agenda irrespective of
IMPROVISE NOW: India must now adopt a new military policy to safeguard the nation from the evil designs of the Pakistani army. the Foreign Policy of their country. THE statement of the Army Chief General Bikram Singh that Pakistan and its army is directly involved in supporting terrorist at the Line of Control (LoC) to fight
Indian army in the Keran sector is a serious one and has exposed Pakistan and its dirty intentions. The Indian government which still wants to have peace talks and wants to improve relationship with Pakistan is making biggest blunder and are living in a fool’s paradise trying to improve relationship with our enemy number one, Pakistan. I strongly feel that the handshake and talk between Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif in Washington recently was a joke and waste of time and money and the urgent need of the hour is that there should not be any talks with Pakistan and India must snap all the ties with them and call back their Ambassador or the high commissioner and order all Pakistani artists and sports persons who are living in India to leave the country immediately. The statement of Gen. Singh which has nailed Pakistan must be taken very seriously by the Indian government and Pakistan should be handled with an iron hand irrespective of any consequences for the safety of the country and the people. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Continued from pg 1 « happens to be an informer of the unit, to celebrate the birthday of his daughter. As the crime branch officials of unit seven were present at the residence of the prime accused, an internal inquiry has been initiated in the matter. The break-in took place at the private city survey office of Mahadev Andurlekar in Golibar, Santacruz East, and the whole incident was recorded on CCTV. The accused were identified as Shakir Haider Sheikh alias Guddu, 36, Vinod Suni Tayde alias Shubham, and female accomplice Gurupreet Kuljeet Singh, 20, a standard XII pass student, both residents of Mumbra. Sheikh used his girlfriend in all the cases, and would rent rooms for them at good hotels in the city. In this case, Sheikh gave Singh around 3 lakh to stay in a posh hotel in Andheri. According to police sources, the accused, during interrogation, revealed that on September 12, Sheikh had spent most of the money for celebrating his daughter’s birthday lavishly at his residence on 90 Feet Road in Saki Naka, along with two officers and three constables from crime branch unit seven. He also bought several household items and even invested in a flat. On September 14, crime branch unit seven arrested

On Sunday, a body was found behind the Ryan International School in Malad West. The deceased was later identified as Alam Khan, a tailor by profession at Malvani. During investigations, the police found that the last call on the deceased’s phone was made by his daughter. The police brought her to the police station where she revealed that Khan was involved in a physical relationship with her on several occasions. Her husband Alam Sheikh, who has several cases registered against him, came to know about the physical relation between the father and daughter. He therefore, along with Khan’s daughter, plotted to kill the father. They killed him on Sunday and dumped his body behind the school. While Sheikh was an informer of the police, he was also wanted in several cases. When crime branch officials came to know about his involvement in the murder, a constable from the crime branch unit 11 asked him to come to the police station. Alerted by this call, Sheikh switched off his phone and fled, even as crime branch officials sat and waited for him at the police station. Two hours later, the officials traced the location of Sheikh’s mobile to Nashik. His current location is not known, and while further investigations are on, the police have detained the daughter. It may be recalled that in the Shakti Mill gang rape case, the main accused, Qasim Bangali, was watching cartoons at his residence when a constable from crime branch unit 2 called him up and told him to come to the police station. Bangali got suspicious and escaped, and was the last of the accused to be arrested, that too from Delhi. Sheikh and his girlfriend Singh in the break-in case, but showed only Rs.4 lakh recovered in cash, while handing them over to the Vakola police station. On Wednesday, Vakola police arrested Shubam from Oshiwara and recovered some more cash. He was produced in court which remanded him to police custody. Senior police inspector Vinayak Mule of Vakola police station said, “Sheikh is a history-sheeter and
has been convicted in 21 house break-in cases, and has more then 40 cases against him.” Crime PI Ravindra Sawant, along with Vakola police station detection staff, under the supervision of PSI Samir Bhujbal, played a vital role in detecting the case. However, Senior PIVenkat Patil of Crime Branch Unit VII has refuted reports that his men had attended Sheikh’s party on September 12.

Placements, enrolments drop drastically Hard times for B-Schools Continued from pg 1 « The situation in engineering colleges is worse because of a mushrooming growth in their numbers, with many of them lacking in adequate infrastructure and quality teaching faculty. This could do when economic growth was robust, but now only the best will survive, adds the report. Rawat also commented that the global uncertainty has certainly affected the placement pattern at Bschools and engineering colleges. “This year, the numbers of placements are fewer and there is also no hike in the average pay packages. Apart from the IIMs and a handful of others, it will be difficult for several business schools to get 100 per cent placement in the future,” added Rawat. This year, the offers from the financial and telecom sectors have also gone down by 35 per cent. The pay packets offered are not very encouraging and lesser than last year,” said Rawat. There has been a drop of about 15,000-18,000 in the total registrations this year, with more than a 35 per cent drop in students appearing for the MAT exam conducted annually by the AIMA. Some colleges have been forced to close several programmes making the faculty redundant in the process. “The situation is quite bad”, said one of the directors of the institutions surveyed in the report.

dancing to keep your feet refreshed — tired feet can ruin your entire night!
#2. add some oomPh
We recommend
With some choice makeup we mean. You have to make sure that your look screams festive without being over-the-top. Here are a few tips and products to pick up: • Apply a translucent powder that’s oil resistant as you’ll be sweating while you dance. • Make sure that the makeup you apply is water resistant to avoid being caught with running mascara or clumpy foundation. • Apply a cream blush because powder will look cakey under all the lights. • Wear long lasting lipstick and remember to apply a little compact before you put it on your lips, to avoid cracking. • Pick jewel toned colours for a festive look. • Pick bold lip colours and don’t shy away from shine and gloss.
add these to your makeup kit • NYX Matte Finishing Powder (`620): Because it adjusts well to skin tone and promises to set without letting sweat get in the way. • NARS Cream Blush (`1,500): Because of its staying power and the glow it will give you. • Maybelline Colossal Kajal (`350): It will stay on all night, is waterproof and will give your lashes a lot more expression. • Maybelline SuperStay 14HR Lipstick (`525): Because not only does it really last all night, it smells great, applies smooth and they have several shades with little touches of shimmer. • Lush Fantasy Liquid Eyeliner (`1,400): For a brilliant gold line on your eyelids that lasts extremely long and really stands out.
• Haute Mond'e Pedicure (`550): Head to Nailspa Experience at Khar (W) this Navratri before you get ready to dance the night away. The best part about this pampering pedicure is that you get nail art absolutely free with it. • Foot Scrub/Wrap (`1,800): Mudraa Spa in Nariman Point will leave you feeling relaxed, so before you go dancing, head for their nourishing foot scrub and wrap. Then comb your hair, so that it spreads evenly. However, this is a quick way to soften your hair, don’t make it a habit as it can be unhealthy for your hair in the long run. hairstyles to opt for • Long wavy cuts are popular. If you are going for a westernised ethnic look, wear your hair loose. • Fringes are in. The side-swept fringe is trendy, but if you are wearing a maang tikka, part the fringe in the centre. You can use embellished hair accessories and clips, or ribbons that match your Navratri outfit.

hether you play dandiya or not, it is impossible not to know Falguni Pathak and her connection with Navratri. With a long, illustrious association with the festival, she has become the face of the nine-day long dandiya-raas event and her garbas are the most sought after. This year, she’s performing in Ghatkopar after 25 years. We talk to her about her history with the festival and find out what’s in store at her event this time.

S
et up in 1998 by Nicholas Mason, the founding festival director, the Manhattan Short Film Festival hosted its fourth edition in Mumbai on September 29. This year the festival had a special category, The Wave: The Manhattan Short India Women’s Freedom video contest. Participants had to shoot a one-minute video describing what freedom meant to them and upload it on YouTube. Three were selected and screened. The Indian edition was founded by Anil Sadarangani and Vaisalli Ghosh in 2010. Here we talk to Vaisalli Ghosh to find out more about the contest and film festival.
How did you become a part of this project? How do you relate to it? I have always been interested in movies — who isn’t? Being born and brought up in Dehradun and having lived a small town life, when I see Indian cinema lending a voice to stories from small town India, especially in new age cinema and short film, I am thrilled. So, when Anil Sadarangani approached me to come on board Manhattan Short India as a Festival Director with him, I saw huge potential. Since I had already been part of another film festival, this was a chance to be part of the growing
Think Navratri and Falguni Pathak comes to mind. You’ve been associated with the festival for a long, long time. What makes you want to get back on stage every year? When I started singing for dandiya, I didn’t expect the journey to be this long. But it has been enjoyable. God has been very kind. movement of short films and world cinema. Short films have permeated our lives. Everyone uses them to tell stories, sell products and create awareness. We’re passionate about cinema and telling stories through short films. How many entries did you receive? This year, we received over 600 entries from 48 countries. 10 films were shortlisted and screened the world over. In Mumbai it was at Fun Republic on September 29 and 30.
What parameters do you judge the Women’s Freedom contest by? With regard to the Women’s Freedom contest, it is all about the message. That’s it. A message about women and how important we are in the scheme of things. The message — ‘don’t take us for granted’ in 60 seconds. That was the criteria for winners.
As someone who’s seen your performances… you bring a lot of energy to the stage. How do you manage that? It is the audience that lets me do that. Their reaction and response energises me automatically. What’s on your mind right before you get on stage? I still feel nervous before going on stage even after so many years. But, once I’m up there, the mood automatically falls in place.
As an Indian woman, do you personally think that you are free? What does freedom mean to you? Freedom is a relative term. Personally, I am blessed. I have had a beautiful upbringing in Dehradun. I am married to a gem of a man. I am accustomed and attuned to the crazy lifestyle of a fast-paced urban metro mindset. But, we have a long way to go as a country and we should we each do our bit.
Navratri culture is different in Gujarat as compared to Mumbai. In Gujarat we have concentric circles around the stage whereas here, people usually form their own tiny circles. Why do you think this is? In Gujarat the music is different; it is more traditional and slow. In Mumbai, the music is a little more upbeat and people prefer to dance in their own groups.
Apart from the contest, will we see you more active in women's issues? Yes. The Women’s Freedom contest has been established as an annual contest because we are committed to it. We want to build a message and we know that it cannot be done as a one-off How do you judge the videos? The content. Does your story reach thing because then there is no impact. out to me? Am I moved? Most of our We have to keep repeating ourselves winners have been filmmakers whose and engage new blood. We believe that stories have touched the audience. we must do our bit in our small way.
What can we expect from you this year? Every year, we introduce a few new Gujarati folk songs and this year we’re doing that as well. In 1987, I performed for the very first time in Ghatkopar and I’m really excited to be back after 25 years to perform for all nine days.
What themes are popular in videos for the Women's Freedom contest? Most have been about what freedom means to women. Many have questioned that word. Many celebrated it. One of the winning films is about female infanticide. It’s about lending a voice through the eyes of the layman, or in this case the lay-woman. This contest is also open for men to tell us what freedom means to women in their lives.
Do you think the 10pm deadline is a killjoy when it comes to Navratri celebrations in Mumbai? Yes, absolutely! But, it’s ok. We try to make the most in the limited time that we have.
From your performances over the years, which one has been your most memorable one? Why? After the release of my first album Yaad Piya Ki in 1998, when I performed the song during Navratri, I was shocked to see the great reactions from the audience for that song.

hile there are expensive brands for everything, all of us can’t afford them. Big brands scream quality, but that doesn’t mean that reasonably priced brands are always trashy and low on quality. All of us have been through instances when expensive products have been as faulty as cheap, roadside ones. In our hunt for cheaper alternatives to expensive items, we asked experts to suggest reasonably priced cousins to two expensive facets of our wardrobe — a good, well-fitted pair of jeans and heels. Read on to know their secret bargain tricks:

Shyness is often mistaken for being rude and unapproachable. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why people at work might think you’re not the nicest one around… >> You haven’t said anything to your co-workers, but they still think you are rude? Maybe it is your shyness that is causing this misunderstanding
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2013
“O
h my god, I used to think you were so rude!” If that’s a sentence you’re used to hearing, you know what it’s like to have your shyness mistaken for a sulky attitude. Being crippled by shyness in a social setting is bad enough, but imagine how much worse it is to be labelled rude at work when all you really are is incredibly shy. If you think you’re getting a cold shoulder because of your inability to speak up, then here are a few things that could be contributing to people thinking you’re rude.
your Poker face If you don’t smile and your shyness translates to a stony, unexpressive look when you’re in public, you can come across as rude. Especially if you’re sitting in a meeting and everyone is nodding, smiling and being involved while you sit there thinking of how to open up — people are going to see you as rude and disinterested.
not saying Hello Shutterstock
Say hello to your co-workers when you walk in and acknowledge them when you pass by. Even if you’re heading to the bathroom and you pass someone, don’t keep your head down and hurry by. Even a simple smile will do.
aVoiDing gaze In an office, you’re going to catch someone’s eye every time you look around. And, unlike school or college, you can’t always bury your head in a book or your phone. If you catch someone’s eye, nod and smile before you look away.
keeP to yourself Getting involved in office activities, even if you’re in the background, is the easiest way to avoid seeming rude. Don’t eat lunch alone and remember not to side-step or avoid people if you’re heading out. If you share a common coffee room, don’t leave out when you see a group come in. Stay and smile — it’s an invitation for them to include you in their conversation.
conVersation starters Help out: A way to get talking is to ask for or offer help. Something wrong with the printer that you may be able to fix? Go ahead, offer a helping hand. Even something small like the internet not working can be a conversation starter. Ask your co-worker if his/her connection is down too instead of silently hitting the refresh button. ask about them: “How was your weekend?” or “Did you see the game last night?” is a good way to start a conversation. TV shows, movies and sports are great topics, but if you’re not sure what they’re into, simply bring up an interesting piece of news from the weekend and ask if they happened to read about it. It could start a long discussion and you’ll no longer be the shy/rude person in the room. eat around the topic: Try to eat at the same time as others so you can be involved. Just make a comment about someone’s lunch looking good or smile and say “no hurry” if you’re in line for the microwave — it will be better than just standing there in uncomfortable silence. keep questions open: If you’re asking a question, make sure it’s open ended. Or then, ask a follow up question. For example, if someone says, “How was your weekend?” instead of saying “Good, thank you,” follow it up with, “Great, how was yours?”

We never used to get along too well and so, I have a feeling that she did it on purpose. But, I can’t prove it. She did apologise to me and said that it happened by mistake. I asked her to replace the mug, but she has been avoiding me since. Can you please suggest a way I can get back at her? — Mansi goyal, tardeo Dear Mansi, Get back at her? Woah! Calm down! When someone apologises and says it was an accident, you don’t make plans for revenge. And since you don’t have any proof that this was done intentionally and also, since this is the month of Gandhiji, I’m going to tell you to forgive and forget… well, almost. While it might really have been an accident, good manners dictate that she should get you a new mug. And, if she’s unwilling to do so and has been avoiding you since, you can easily get her attention by using her mug in the interim. We’re sure that she’ll take notice of that and sooner or later will replace your mug. However, this is as far as you go. Otherwise, this situation will become even more childish.
There’s a new girl who recently joined our office. She’s quite young and a fun person to hang out with. But of late, she’s started treating me as her agony aunt. She comes to me with every problem that she has in her love life and while I do not mind helping her out in my free time, it gets really annoying when she keeps pestering me when I’m busy. I’m scared of putting her down too harshly, but at the same time want her to tone it down a bit. What do I do? — Dimple nayak, Bandra Dear Dimple, As I see it, there’s not much you can do except go up to her and tell her that while you can and do not mind helping her some times, work comes first for you. Let her know that her problems are taking a toll on your productivity at work and that they disrupt your concentration. If you feel that would be too direct, the next time she comes to you with her issues, you can try telling her that you’re busy at the moment. Do this a few times and she should get the hint. If she doesn’t, then I’m afraid that you’ll have to be straightforward about the issue. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

2. call before Before you make a purchase from a website, make sure that you have called their customer care. This is to gauge whether customer care is easily accessible in case of faulty items, exchange issues or order cancellations. Visit their Facebook/Twitter page as well to see if they have a virtual presence on other social media platforms. If it’s difficult to get in touch with them, we suggest you steer clear of that website. 3. sign up & save When it comes to your favoured online stores, signing up for newsletters will keep you in the loop about special sales, discounts and deals. This way you can score some great deals on a lot of products, especially during the holiday season. Don’t forget to open these newsletters as most websites will have sales and offers. 4. size matters While buying clothing items use a measuring tape and chart to determine your exact size for the country of origin you are purchasing from. UK sizes are different from US sizes and the figures vary largely according to topography. Don’t just blindly buy by S (small), M (medium), and L (large). Check each website’s size charts as most apparel retailers offer them in order to guide consumers. Also, read the reviews of people who have bought the same piece. 5. return policy Ensure that the website that you are shopping from has lenient and convenient return policies. Some websites, in case of exchange, expect you to courier the item to them on your own and they offer to pay for the courier charges. If that seems like a hassle to you, ensure that you have read about their return policies in detail. If you don’t have the time, call their customer care to get clarity on various scenarios with respect to returns.

We are parents to a 14-year-old boy. Ronit is a very good child. He is kind, friendly and thoughtful and is not demanding at all. And, up until the age of eleven or twelve, he was extremely outgoing and, well, happy.
But, over the last couple of years, we have noticed him becoming quiet. He doesn’t even want to be with his old friends!
Ronit? Girish’s mummy called. She asked why you were not at his birthday party?
>> Always talking about how hot you are and making an effort to show off is a sure sign that you’re addicted to attention
A
ll of us have come across at least one attention seeker in our lives. You say you haven’t? Then maybe it is you! For attention seekers, others noticing them is like an addiction. Though there are more positive ways to receive attention, these people aren’t patient enough to wait for you to take notice. It doesn’t matter if the attention is positive or negative, as long as they are getting noticed, they don’t care. People addicted to attention are classic examples of ‘love me or hate me, but you can’t ignore me.’ More often than not, attention seekers don’t even realise that they are addicted to attention. Here are signs which make you a person who’s obsessed with attention.
The flasher No, there’s no problem with revealing clothes, but if you are going to a hospital to visit your friend who’s unwell, you obviously know that too tight pants and a t-shirt that displays a generous amount of cleavage, doesn’t fit the bill. Attention seekers know that people will ogle at them which is exactly what they want.

thing they want to do is cross her, because she has an arsenal of secrets that she’s willing to put up on Facebook.
How is it possible that every time anybody is sharing something about their lives, this particular person always has a better story to tell? They will spin the conversation to their side and then will go on talking about it. And they always have outrageous things to say. They also over share their life and will always be on the TMI (too much information) mode. Whether in person, on Facebook or Twitter, they’ve probably said too much. Their ‘friends’ and ‘followers’ know every aspect of what they are about to do and what they’ve already done.
When you ask them what they are doing, they will say, “I am driving my Merc, heading toward Trident for a meeting.” Of course, just saying, “I am heading for a meeting” wouldn’t be enough, right? They keep displaying how extravagant their life is on social media, will tweet whether they should buy the latest Gucci dress or an iPad, and harp about their life and how important it is for others to know about its details.
The scene creaTor
The poser
If there is an argument, then this person will make sure that a scene is created and that she is the centre of attention. She’ll begin by talking about someone’s mother, using words so vulgar, men in a bar fight would cringe. The words that come out of her mouth are just insane and she loves the shock value of it all. Her friends aren’t off the hook either. The last
Pictures are worth a thousand words, but their pictures scream, “notice me”. From seductive glares to the over-the-shoulder booty pose, they ensure that everyone is aware that they’re hot and they know it. And his grades, instead of picking up, are falling behind.
“How do we get him to relax a little? To let him know that we know his limitations and don’t want to put any pressure on him?”— Parents a) The fact that your son is a hard worker should make you very proud. But, everything, as you understand, needs balance. You need to sit him down and explain to him what you just said. And insist that he has some fun too. He sounds worn out! b) Yes, he is working hard for his exam, but it also sounds like he may be avoiding his friends. Have they been bullying him? c) Up to the wee hours doing “research” on his computer? Please monitor your child’s internet usage and insist on a proper bedtime! LAST WEEK: Jenny should pick Option C: Talk to Tommy. I bet he does not even realise that he is ignoring you. Introduce Bobby to more people.

She needs more time to recover
MY wife had an unfortunate abortion at around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy. We were having sex and my condom slipped because of which she got pregnant. As we both were not ready for child at this time, she underwent abortion. Since then she has lost interest in any physical relation with me. Is there any cure for this problem? Is there any medicine available for females to increase sexual desire? THERE are no medications to increase sexual desire in women. Your wife underwent the physical as well as psychological Dr. Rajan B. Career or family
I AM 25 years old and working in Govt. sector. Before joining this job I was preparing for Civil Services exams, but my parents forced me to join this job, which is too inferior to Civil Service. I tried to make them understand but in vain. Since, I am feeling changes in my behavior. I get angry very soon and feel lonely. Sometimes, a normal conversation irritates me. I can’t concentrate on my studies, which is creating depression. Now, girls and sex attract me a lot. Please tell me is it the symptom of any disease. YOU are 25 years old and have a moral and legal right to your own decisions. Of course this also means that you accept and are responsible for all the repercussions that emerge from your decision—whether the repercussions come in the form of displeasure of family, doing without the income your present job brings etc. What you are describing about yourself is an emotional disturbance arising out of an inner
21
conflict. On one hand, you want to follow your dream of being in the Civil Service by wholeheartedly preparing for the exams, but this is not backed by your family. On the other hand, you please your family by taking this job against your wishes, and you are unable to focus on your studies which will ultimately lead you to fulfill your dream. This is a decision which only you can and should make. First, realistically assess your interest and aptitude. Then ask yourself where you will find true fulfillment. Finally follow your heart with determination. If you do this then your depressive feelings should soon pass. If you still find yourself feeling low and unable to focus on your studies, there may be other aspects to your problem. See a counsellor for a few sessions to get to the bottom of the matter. By the way, your attraction for the opposite sex is perfectly normal for your age. Do not relate it to your problem. TV TATTLE BIRTHDAY SURPRISE
It was a very special birthday surprise for Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati, as a very special lady came on the sets to wish him. AB was overwhelmed when the episode started with the audience singing ‘Happy Birthday’. He thanked them for showering their love on him. Later, a very special surprise greeted him in the form of 100 year old Bernandini D’souza. Bernandini has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t remember anything except Mr. Bachchan and his movies and eats only after looking at AB’s picture. This was definitely the most unique gift Mr. Bachchan has ever received. Here’s wishing the Shehanshah of Bollywood a very happy birthday! Catch AB’s birthday special episode on KBC this Friday, October 11 at 8:30 pm on Sony Entertainment Television

How has your journey been so far after your days at MTV? Television has evolved very much and a lot of new content has come up in MTV, so much that I feel like old school. ith yet another version of the Mahabharata catching the attention of viewers, the lavish show on Star Plus is taking its popularity to a record high. This is a good time to take a look at why some shows in this genre work, while some don’t. The starting point of mythological shows on Indian TV goes back to the time of two popular shows, Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and BR Chopra’s Mahabharat. More recently, the show that has found widespread popularity is Devon Ke Dev-Mahadev, based on the life of Lord Shiva on LIFE OK, making Mohit Raina who has designed herself. Designing Rachna’s Awadhi-Indian look, Niharika Bajpai, the stylist said, “She is a simple girl who belongs to Benaras and is known to be a behenji. It was tough to make this character come out as an elegant girl on the ramp and get her fans to love her as much as they do.” Tune in to Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, Monday – Friday at 7:30 pm on ZEE TV

plays Lord Shiva a national figure. It says a lot about the show that it airs on a channel that’s barely a year old. However, this genre can be tricky and not everyone has managed to get it right. The new version of Ramayan and Maa Durga haven’t worked while Ekta Kapoor’s Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki sank without a trace. The audience didn’t quite accept the show, the starting point of which was the Draupadi vastraharan. To add to it all, the oddly Greco-Roman costumes didn’t work either. On the other hand, what makes Mahadev work is the perfect balance of drama, action and fantasy. It does not, however, ensure that the sentiments of hardcore devotees are never hurt. In all, mythologicals work only if the audience finds something fresh in the story. Such shows must also appeal to all age
the show is that not Mohit Raina but a Mohit Raina look-alike – Karan Sagoo – will battle it out with the other contestants to win over Mallika. A source says, “Yes we had approached Mohit Raina to be a part of the show, however things have not worked out. We have Karan Sagoo as one of the best con-
games. The prizes are very lucrative like refrridgerators, television sets, air conditioners and food processor. The first round of the show is the Buzzer Round where I will each participant one question. The family that buzzes first gets to answer first and the one that gives the correct answer first gets to play a two minute game. Each game will be preceded by a buzzer round. In all, there are six buzzer rounds and six games to be played. Each team can play as many games as they want and whoever gets the maximum prizes will be the Champion Family. In case of a tie, there will be an additional tie breaker round to decide the champion family. There will also be a special round of games for ladies in each episode. Every seventh episode will be a bumper episode where six champion families get to play against each other, and the Maha Champion Family will get a Mercedes Benz Car.

groups, especially kids. It’s tricky then to stay away from clichés, yet create dramatic plot points that make the story engaging. And while most shows stick to the ‘superstars’ Ram-Sita, Krishna, Ganesh, Shiva and Durga, they would probably find new stories to tell if they looked beyond them. If there are 33 crore gods and goddesses as believed, producers and directors can take their pick and make their TV shows a success.

have to stress on the family factor and do it subtly in my ‘old school way’ where I wouldn’t be playing to the gallery. Since this is a clean family show, I will refrain from vulgar comic antics or joking around. Since there are families from different states and stratas I will have to take care when a Maharashtrian family is competing with a Madrasi or a Punjabi family so as not to hurt their sentiments.

After having acted in films like Rang De Basanti, Delhi 6, Love Break-Ups Zindagi and Aisha, he is all set to anchor a game show on SAB TV called Sab Khelo Sab Jeeto which will be telecast every weekend from 8 to 9 pm from October 12. How did you decide to work with SAB TV? SAB TV is a niche channel and a brand where viewers of all ages have their own favorite programmes. It is the only channel where clean comedy shows are a part of the content. How come we don’t see much of you on comedy reality shows? I am eager to do such shows but I haven’t been offered some good comedy reality shows. However, I am happy that I now have a premier game show to anchor.
What do you have planned next? I am doing Mira Nair’s forthcoming film and a Hollywood film Million Dollar Arm. I am also starting my own internet portal with Rhea Kapoor where we will have different shows as content.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (October 10, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Wednesday (October 09, 2013) a net 79.05 points (1.33%) and closed at the 6007 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5893 points level. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5877 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then rose into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.45 p.m. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6015 points level at 3.20 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 138 points and closed above the psychologically important 6000 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 40 were gainers, while 10 were losers. All the sectoral indices barring consumer durables closed in the green. Technical Analysis: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.84%. This change is moderate but indicates a wide participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 892 were gainers, 466 were losers and 65 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It has crossed above its 9-day Average (positive and a buy signal).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.
Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5692 points level. The next support is at the 5561 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6123 points level. The next resistance is at the 6223 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5967 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5918. Support (2) = 5828. Resistance (1) = 6056. Resistance (2) = 6105.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a l ong white body candle on subs tantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday’s candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive. Further, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages, and all the four averages are rising. Further, the 5 days moving average has crossed above the 15 days moving average. This is positive and a buy s ignal. Moreover, the vel ocity parameters too are positively trended. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a fur ther upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 5904 point’s level.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 5931) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 5904) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 5833) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5840) Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weaknes s: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Attractive valuation; however, rise in funding costs could delay the party Although LIC housing has raised >30% of FY14’s borrowing target during Q1FY14 itself at average cost of ~9.2%, the future incremental cost of borrowing is likely to remain higher, especially in the prevailing macroenvironment. However, latest NCD was issued at more than 50bps lower than the rates prevailing a month earlier. Although management has been emphasizing to enhance the share of developers loans to 6-8% for last so many quarters, the trend has been rather opposite and now it touches 3% mark, lowest in past so many years. We opine that even increase in share of LAP (loan against property) to ~5% levels by end of FY14 (management had guided earlier) could cushion the spread going forward. We have seen LIC Housing Finance consistently maintaining its NPA below 1% mark. Although during Q1FY14, its gross NPA saw some up-tick to 0.80%, it was partly a seasonal phenomenon (Q1 vs. Q4). Despite rise in NPAs, provisions declined 60.7% YoY during Q1FY14 on back of lower net slippage during Q1FY14 (Rs.1.7 bn vs. 2.0 in Q1FY13) and shift of NPAs in the lower provisioning bucket. We have modeled NIM compression during FY14/15E assuming borrowing costs to remain higher than pre-mid-July rates. We expect LIC Hsg to report ~17% CAGR over FY13-15E with healthy return ratios (RoA at ~1.4%; RoE: 17%+). At CMP, stock is trading reasonable at 1.5x its FY14E ABV and 8.5x its FY14E earnings. Hence, we maintain BUY rating on the stock with unchanged TP of Rs.240 based on 1.75x FY14E ABV. ICICI Direct calls a ‘Buy’ on Marico CMP: Rs. 220
Target Rs. 249.50
Marico is the leader in the branded hair oil category and super premium refined oils in India with its flagsh ip brands ‘Parachute’ and ‘Saffola’, respectively. Over the years, the company has transformed itself from a pure play oils player to one focused on health and wellness. It has complemented it with an established overseas business and a slew of acquisitions to strengthen its personal care portfolio (Set Wet, Zatak and Livon from Paras Pharmaceuticals). Therefore, with the ability to leverage on established brand equity by launching variants and generating growth via new streams (skincare, functional foods), we expect net sales and profit to register a CAGR of 14.7% and 21.2%, respectively, in FY13-15E. We recommend a BUY rating on the stock. Near term trigger: The increasing contribution of faster growing youth brands (Set Wet hair gel, Zatak deodorants, Livon hair serum), value added hair oils and functional foods (Saffola oats and muesli), ahead of the festive season, would be key revenue driver. The benefits of lower raw material prices (coconut oil, copra and rice bran) during H1FY14E would aid the company’s margins in FY14E as well as support its need for higher marketing expenses to fight the slowing consumer demand. The de-merger of the Kaya business from the company from Q2FY14 onwards would aid the company’s margins (Kaya was still underperforming), thereby aiding the return ratios of the company from FY14E onwards. Long term catalyst: With the company diversifying its portfolio to faster growth categories by leveraging on the established brand equity (Saffola for functional foods and Parachute for value added hair oils), inclusion of youth brands in the portfolio (Set Wet, Zatak, Livon) and de-merging its nonperforming business, we believe the revenue, EBITDA and PAT growth would remain strong at 14.7%, 23.7% and 21.2% CAGR, respectively in FY13-15E. We believe that with the revival in growth in GCC countries and cross pollination of brands across geographies, international business revenues would post stronger growth at 21.8% CAGR in FY13-15E (ex-Kaya). With the changing product mix and ability to pass on prices more easily in higher growth & lower penetrated categories (functional foods, value added hair oils & youth brands), we believe margins would expand to 15.8% by FY15E from 13.6% in FY13, thereby driving earnings to grow at 21.2% CAGR in FY13-15E.

Trade: Merchandise Outlook
India’s merchandise trade deficit fell to US$ 29.9 billion in Q2FY14 from US$ 50.2 billion in Q1FY14. The sharp reduction in trade deficit was driven by an increase in exports and a decline in gold imports The current account deficit in Q1FY14 was $21.8 billion (4.9 % of GDP). An over $20 billion reduction in merchandise trade deficit in Q2FY14 as compared to Q1FY14, suggests significant improvement in current account deficit for the second quarter. Better-than-expected export growth if sustained creates downside to Crisils forecast for current account deficit at 3.9 % of GDP for 2013-14. EBITDA growth and ballooning debt levels, in a high interest rate environment. Margin improvement will be possible only with pick-up in investments and revival in industrial growth, which, we believe, will be challenging in 2013-14. BRUSH WITH ART
BSTRACTED works of Ravi Mandlik are on view at the Jehangir Art Gallery. Perhaps Mandlik – when he is painting – has no definite subject in view. He might not have even visualised the final painting it is going to be. He might not even decide what forms he should choose to construct the final painting. But he breaks them all – the images that come into his mind. Where do these images come from? Do they have any meaning? Must they have any meaning? Evidently there is nothing like “message or meaning” in Mandlik’s painting. It looks like he works in freedom. And he wields the brush as the experienced mind tells him. Is the instinct involved? Instinct is the highest form of intelligence. To the uninitiated in abstract art, it may all seem as just a form of madness. But there is a method in
Anjaneyulu’s allegoric imagery A
NJANEYULU has done very interesting still life paintings – but with a difference. He gets out of commonplace objects a new meaning. We see something else from what an object is supposed to look like. Anjaneyulu mostly uses the image of vessels in a home. At his hands the look of the vessel is completely changed. For one thing, it looks more beautiful. We do not look at a vessel at all. It is an ordinary object. But Anjaneyulu invests the vessels with allegorical images. The vessels – apart from anything else – look beautiful. Where did that
dimension of beauty come from? There are no images on a vessel. One of them a – small one – looks like one of those small living creatures. The vessels cast shadows and they add to the appeal of the work. And he sets the vessel against a backdrop of bright colour – usually red. Finally, what we see in the works is not a vessel but a totally different object. Anjaneyulu is an artist who has done excellent paintings. The exhibition is being presented by India Fine Art. the madness. In any work of art, aesthetics is most important. Whatever style the artist employs, the final work of art must have all those ingredients that have an aesthetic appeal.
Images of divinity by Bipin Soni
Arkay | ADC The exhibition – of Ravi Mandlik is at Jehangir Art Gallery – till October 14. It will continue at Tao Art Gallery from 16th to 24th October.
A
NEW interpretation of Shiva has been done by Bipin Soni. He is said to have done divine paintings. Some use the word ‘spiritual’ to describe such works of art. Bipin Soni evidently is deep into religion. He has done a Shivmat series and he could not have done it so well but for the fact that he had implicit feelings. Painting a Hindu God is not spirituality – but Bipin does not do that. His concept of a God is unique. It is different from Gods about whom we know. He invests the got with a different quality. For instance, the lingam he has done has unusual features. Colour: blue. The leg – one of which is blue – resembles the pose struck by Nataraja. Another by is placed on huge animal – elephant? – With along neck. There is a tiny image above the lingam which appears ray-like. And below the image are tiny animals – a white dog and a lion. The exhibition is at Nehru Centre – till October 14. Contact: 9825432409.
Excellent Buddha images by Sheela at Art Entrance S
HEELA has no hand: her paintings with her foot. She met with a train accident at the age of seven. She lost her arms. She was sent to a local primary school. During this period she learnt how to hold things with her mouth and foot. She was fond of making photographs and drawing sketches. After school, she studied and got a bachelor degree. Sheela has produced remarkably excellent work. The Buddha image she has produced exudes peace and love. What she has done in spite of her handicap is most praiseworthy. Sheela’s exhibition is at Art Entrance from 12th to 18th October. Contact: 9870006543/9867243101.

Top seed Djokovic cantered through the first set against Spain's Marcel Granollers for the loss of only two games. But early in the second he pulled up in obvious discomfort and called for the ATP trainer, who applied heavy taping to his right foot and ankle. Despite the medical treatment, the 26-year-old did not look inconvenienced as he returned to the court to seal a 62, 6-0 victory, hitting a total of 26 winners.

EW DELHI: Ace Indian shuttler Jwala Gutta moved the Delhi High Court challenging the decision of Badminton Association of India (BAI) to recommend a life ban on her for alleged indiscipline in the IBL. The BAI's disciplinary committee recommended a life ban on Gutta for trying to stop some players of her franchise Krrish Delhi Smashers from playing a match against Banga Beats in the Indian Badminton League in August this year. The petition came before Justice V K Jain who posted it for hearing today. Gutta has sought quashing of the October 7 order, where BAI had ruled out considering Jwala for selection in any international events in the next one month, pending a decision by the three-member committee that was formed on Monday. "The order has been issued in violation of settled principles of natural justice and fairness without giving her a hearing. A direction is to be issued to respondent 1 (Sports Ministry) to seek an in-
Gutta alleged that the association's approach was "pre- determined" and has been taken to single out her. She further alleged that BAI's decision will affect her right to live with dignity. A controversy had erupted during the August 25 tie when Delhi Smashers had allegedly threatened to pull out against Banga Beats over the last-minute replacement of injured singles player, Hu Yun of Hong Kong with Denmark's Jan Jorgense. Last week, BAI's disciplinary committee had recommended a life-ban on Gutta, India's leading doubles players who has won a world championship bronze and Commonwealth Games gold medal with Ashwini Ponappa.

PUNE RACES: HOW THEY RAN ON SUNDAY
Ruias Equus-bred filly wins October Handicap; Dallas Todywalla leads in three winners By Timur
B
eforememoryfades, a filly bred at Equus farm won the October Handicap on Sunday. The horse is owned by Mr. S.M. Ruia and Mr. Amay S. Ruia. It was a decisive win for the Equus bred horse. The horse is trained by Noshar Cama. As on other days this season, racing was competitive – with the win of favourites or well-backed horses. A good performance was by Dallas Todywalla who led in three winners. His first was in the Versatile Plate – Antonius Maximers. It was pitted against only three other horses which however were good. C.S. Jodha who has been riding well for sometime now was on it. Dallas
next win was Negotiator in the Phenomenale Plate. The favourite in the race was Gallant Lad. Finest Vision which was involved with it last time out was available at less odds. It is difficult to see why punters did not favour a bet on Negotiator which had run very well the last time out. Negotiator was ridden by jockey Sandesh. And finally, Dallas led in long-odd winner Windmill Lady in the Hawke Bay Plate-Div. I. Dark Plight attracted a lot of betting in this race, but the bad draw it had might have scotched its chances. And finally, Jayantilal Gor made it. He led in Player which won the Tobler Plate. The horse which is owned by him was available at 12 to 1. The horse was ridden by Shrikant Kamble. Gor has only a
few horses but he makes his presence felt every season. There was a lot of betting on Amaya in the race, but it was nowhere. Watch this horse which has come to Lagad’s stable recently. IN BRIEF Bangladesh strike after Williamson’s century
CHITTAGONG: Kane Williamson hit a fluent century for New Zealand before Bangladesh hit back in the final session of the opening day's play in the first Test in Chittagong. Williamson made 114 to enable the Black Caps to reach 280-5 after they won the toss and elected to bat on a newly-laid pitch at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium. New Zealand were coasting at 2442 when left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, recalled to the Test side after two years, grabbed two of the three wickets that fell after tea. Williamson was leg-before to Shakib Al Hasan in the penultimate over, before Razzak dismissed skipper Brendon McCullum (21) off what turned out to be the final delivery of the day. The flurry of late wickets undid the good work of the top order where opener Peter Fulton made a patient 73 to lay the foundation of a big total.

Will try to keep pressure off Yuvraj: Dhoni
RAJKOT: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni conceded that comeback-man Yuvraj Singh will be under some pressure during the upcoming ODI series against Australia but said the team would insulate him from any "undue" stress by keeping things "normal" in the dressing room. Yuvraj would be eager to prove a point after being recalled to the squad following a string of good scores for India A against the West Indies A and a solid display for India Blue in the Challenger Series. Dhoni said the 31-year-old, who beat a rare germ cell cancer last year, will perform well if he manages to keep his mind off pressure and expectations. "We are trying to keep it as normal as possible...If it becomes like a comeback scenario, I think there is a kind of pressure on the player. It doesn't matter if you are one of the biggest match-winners. It is very important to take that feeling away from the individual that he is making his comeback," Dhoni said ahead of the only Twenty20 match against Australian to be played here today. "Because what's important is for the individual to be expressive on field, back himself, have belief in his talent, the kind of talent that he has got. Ultimately that will show on the field. We will try to keep it as normal as possible and try to take the undue pressure off him and hopefully that will work," he added. He backed the left-hander, who has been recalled after playing his last ODI in January. "Yuvraj, of course is a match winner and we all know that. He is a big player and has been proving himself whenever questions have been raised. The fact is that he is a big match player. He performs well in big matches. He does well in tough series. We are hoping that he will come back strong," he said. Despite the BCCI advancing the start of the ODI matches by an hour, Dhoni said dew would be a key factor and a lot would depend on it, especially the use of spinners. "We will have to see exactly how much it turns, whether dew will be a factor because if dew becomes a factor then the spinners may not get the same amount of turn that they would have got at some other time of the year," Dhoni explained.

Focus on Yuvraj as India-Australia start off with lone T20

AJKOT: Comeback man Yuvraj Singh will be the cynosure of all eyes as a full-strength India lock horns with a relatively inexperienced Australian side in the one-off Twenty20 game here today, aiming to gain early momentum ahead of the upcoming seven-match ODI series. The match, which is expected to set the tone for a gruelling season ahead, promises to be an exciting face-off at the SCA Stadium, with Australia keen to test their young players before the return Ashes showdown with England. The elements, though, could play spoilsport. The state has been experiencing heavy downpour and the Met department has forecast more rains till today. The hosts, with most of their players having got into the groove for the long international season ahead by taking part in the Champions T20 League or by playing for India A, start as favourites against the visitors led
by Tasmanian George Bailey. The two teams have faced off in seven previous T20 games, with Australia holding a slightly better record at 4-3. India last played a T20 match against Pakistan at Ahmedabad in December. After a two-month break from international cricket, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will look to re-start his stint at the helm with a win. He had warmed up nicely with a good outing for Chennai Super Kings in the CLT20. However, the focus will be primarily on Yuvraj, who would be eager to prove a point after being recalled to the squad following a string of good scores for India A against theWindies A and a solid display for India Blue in the Challenger Series. The 31-year-old had also scored a quick-fire 52 off 35 balls against the West Indies A in a T20 game in Bangalore. Apart from his explosive batting, Yuvraj's left-arm spin will also be handy in the shortest form of the game. Besides, two Saurashtra players -- all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja
and left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat - would also be keen to show their prowess in front of home crowd. Left-handed Jadeja, who will be playing his first international T20 match at home, would be eager to be among the runs after a disappointing performance in the CLT20. The No. 1 bowler in ODIs, who has the knack of picking up wickets at the right time, would look to recapture his form. The Indian batting looks very formidable. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have been in good form with fluent performances in the Champions League, while lefthanded Suresh Raina has also been in good touch, amassing 221 runs for CSK in the tournament. Then there is the strong middle-order consisting of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhoni. The Indian pace attack appears balanced with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma bowling well in tandem, and the duo would look to make early inroads. Bhuvneshwar bowled India Blue to Challenger Series triumph with a four-wicket haul
in the final. Bengal speedster Mohammed Shami and seasoned Karnataka seamer R Vinay Kumar are the other bowlers in the pace attack, apart from Unadkat, who would be eyeing a T20I debut. Leg spinner Amit Mishra, Jadeja and off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, along with part-timers Raina, Rohit and Yuvraj, give the side plenty of slow bowling options. Australia, on the other hand, would be equally eager to start their campaign on a winning note. The visitors, who were whitewashed 0-4 by the hosts in the Test series earlier this year, have been going through some testing times and is a team in transition, struggling to maintain consistency. "The inexperience is one of our learning curves at the moment. We have to get past that. It is probably our weakness, however, it is also our strength. Youthful exuberance often can be very good when it comes to the final crunches," coach Steve Rixon said ahead of the series.

UBLI: On a day of fluctuating fortunes, West Indies A batted brilliantly in first two sessions before India A bowlers fought back strongly in the last session of the first day's play to share the honours in the third unofficial 'Test' at KSCA Stadium here. Put in to bat, West Indies A were bundled out for 268 in their first innings after a spirited bowling by the Indians in the post-tea session, which saw them picking up last five wickets for just 28 runs. In reply, India A were 10 for no loss with openers Gautam Gambhir and V A Jagadeesh batting on two and eight, respectively. Abhishek Nayar finished with
figures of four for 61 and Dhawal Kulkarni claimed three for 60, while Zaheer, left-arm orthodox spinner Bharghav Bhatt and pacer Ishwar Pandey bagged wicket apiece. India A bowlers faced a difficult time in first two sessions in spite of out-of-favour Indian pacer Zaheer Khan giving an early breakthrough in seventh over itself. The visitors, riding on a valuable 81-run knock by Leon Johnson and his crucial partnerships with Narasingh Deonaraine (35) and Assad Fudadin (47), managed to post 175 for three at tea, losing just a wicket in the post-lunch session. However, Indian bowlers, espe-
cially Mumbaikars Nayar and Kulkarni tore apart the middle and lower order in the final session of the day. West Indies A were in complete control at 175 for three when tea was taken. But just after the break, Johnson walked gingerly back to the pavilion after being trapped plumb by Nayar. He faced 148 balls, smashing 15 during his crucial knock. After Johnson's departure, the rest of the batsmen collapsed like a pack of cards, except Fudadin who scored vital runs off 95 balls with the help of three boundaries, before he was out to a magnif- Abhishek Nayar celebrates the wicket of icent diving catch by Jagadeesh in Narsingh Deonaraine of West Indies A during the 3rd unofficial Test match in Hubli. second slip off Kulkarni's bowling.
