Hard to imagine life without cricket. Harder to imagine cricket without Sachin!!!

“I saw him (Sachin) playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on television and said 'yes, there is a similarity' between the two... his compactness, technique, stroke production... it all seemed to gel.” — Sir Donald Bradman

Do you think the state plan to prescribe minimum built-up area for new colleges will improve quality of education? Arvind Walmiki Reporter Improving the faculty will improve the quality of education. Increasing the built up area will just involve more students being shoved into a class.

Vishal Manve Social Media Executive No, infrastructure is necessary, the area of the instittution has got nothing to do with quality. Shweta Govind Student Yes, it’s a good idea as students today complain about needing playgrounds and bigger classrooms.

Farhan Fayyez Sheikh Student Yes, I think it can actually help improve the quality of education. It will provide for better classrooms, and thus better learning spaces for the children to concentrate on their education, ultimately enhancing the complete quality of education. Rashmeet Kaur Teacher I don’t think this new proposed rule will affect the quality of education in any way as there is no idea of how this will affect until changes are actually made.

he presence of celebrities at award functions for glamour quotient is not uncommon. But the presence of Padmashree Dr. Mohan Agashe at an award function titled ‘Dr. Guislain Award’ that honours the contributions of individuals in breaking the chains of stigma about mental illnesses on Thursday, had more significance than a celebrity presence. This well-known actor and theatre personality, whose stage performances have always enthralled audiences and whose presence in a movie can never be forgotten, is a qualified psychiatrist from B.J. Medical College, Pune and works as a Professor of Psychiatry at the B.J. Medical College and Sassoon Hospital in Pune. He was a founding Director of Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health and later moved on to become Director of Film and Television Institute of India. The ADC spoke to him on World Mental Health Day to get his views on the importance of mental well being and the responses were pretty interesting, as he spoke with the precision of a doctor but the emotions that came across were of a passionate actor.

A ‘non-refundable loan of emotion’ from life? For instance, if there is a scene where I have to get angry with you, how can I get angry with you when you haven’t done anything to make me angry? So I look back in life and think of instances where I was very angry and then transfer that emotion of anger to the character I am playing. While this helps me come up with the emotion that the scene demands, I end up depriving myself.

According to information received by us, colleges have been fining students for low attendance, not bringing their identity cards, using their mobile phones and even for the release of hall tickets. The concerned principal was later suspended by the varsity.

No college is allowed to carry out such activities and those found doing so will be punished. Students should complain to the Students Grievance Cell which will take immediate action against the college.”

hree weeks after the Bombay High Court asked State Public Works Department (PWD) and the official liquidator to clear the shrubbery inside the Shakti Mills in Mahalaxmi in Central Mumbai where a photojournalist girl was gangraped in August, the court on Thursday directed the PWD, the official liquidator and the representatives of Shakti Mills to hold a joint meeting to discuss about the Rs.17 lakh price quoted by the PWD to clear debris and shrubbery from inside the mills compound. In its last hearing, Justice N.M. Jamdar of the Bombay High Court, who was hearing a ‘winding up’ petition of the defunct Shakti Mills, had observed, “On an immediate basis, shrubbery and trees below ten feet high and those growing from the side inside the Shakti Mills compound can be removed to enable access to the security guards patrolling the area. The shrubbery shall be cut starting from the periphery. In the first phase the shrubbery and other debris can be cleared, in the second phase the compound wall can be fixed and barbed wire fencing can be done along with construction of sliding gates and security cabins. In the third phase the structures inside the site which has become dilapidated and dangerous can be pulled down.”

History

The builders of the seven buildings, which were constructed between 1981 to1989, were permitted to raise only five floors. However, they flouted norms and built two towers of 17 and 20 floors each and three buildings of six floors each and two of seven floors. The Supreme Court, in its order in February 2012, had ordered demolition of 35 illegal floors, which would have rendered 140 families homeless. At the time of purchase, most residents were aware that some buildings did not have the required certificate from the civic body.

just disrupted, if we are forced to move out. Considering the steep real estate prices in Mumbai, several aged and retired senior citizens will be compelled to relocate to their villages or old age homes,” said a middle-aged woman. The residents believe that only the CM will be able to do justice, while legal experts think he can bring in an ordinance intervening in the matter. Recalling that the State Government has recently decided to go in for cluster development to regularize over a lakh of so-called unauthorized buildings in Thane district, they expressed the hope that the CM will definitely see a valid point in their pleas for justice. While talking to a Campa Cola delegation, Deora reportedly said: I am of the firm belief that this is a just and humanitarian cause and I am sure that the CM will hear you out.” Nana Chudasama supported the cause with his much visible banner at Marine Drive saying: “Dear CM, Campa Cola Complex Needs Human Relations; Demolition is Murder”.

While hearing the petition on Thursday, advocate Naushad Engineer, appointed as amicus curie to assist the court, informed the court that the PWD had sent a letter to the official liquidator on October 4, stating that the estimated price for the first phase was Rs.17 lakh. However, Senior counsel Praveen Samdani, appearing for the Shakti Mills Ltd, told the court that a joint meeting could be held where suggestions can be given for cost cutting. Based on this, Justice Jamdar said, “Hold a joint meeting and discuss the matter. But please see to it that the work is not delayed.” The court has now posted the matter for hearing on October 15. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he residents of the posh Campa Cola compound, after searching for all legal options and meeting a large number of political leaders, are now all set to meet the Chief Minister and request him to find out a solution to end the traumatic ordeal that they have been living through for the past nine months. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court granted a four-week stay as ‘breathing time’ to the residents of Campa Cola Co-operative Housing Society to vacate their flats. This verdict saved Campa Cola CHS from the civic body’s hammers for another 28 days. The apex court said the residents can stay put until November 11, after which they can sue the builders but can't stay on. Since last month, delegations of residents have been meeting various people, including crusader Anna Hazare, who reportedly promised to come back (contact) after taking advice from his advocate. Yogesh Malhotra, a resident of the society, said, “We have met Union Minister for Information Technology Milind Deora, Minister of state for Housing Sachin Ahir, Nana Chudasama, Lata Mangeshkar, M.P. Lodha, Aditya Thackeray, Priya Dutt, and G.R. Khairnar. They have all verbally promised to support our human cause.” The residents pointed out that the State Government had regularized structures at Bhiwandi in 2006, and besides this, several other illegal structures on government land had been regularized by the government in 1990 and 1995. They also cited an example of the Punjab Government which took the route of punishing financially rather than physically, and

round 80 staff from the Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies on Thursday raided the godowns of oil mafia near the airport boundary in Kalina. The team started its operation in the wee hours of Thursday and continued till late into the night. This is not the first raid that has been conducted in these premises. Earlier also, the Vakola police, with the help of a similar department, conducted a raid and booked several people involved. However, the oil dealers whose godowns were raided by the Controller of Rationing have alleged that the department has targeted selected oil dealers but has not shown interest in catching the major illegal dealers. Talking to the ADC, P.T. Kadam, Rationing Officer who was present at the spot said, “We laid a trap at around 12 am on Wednesday night on the basis of a tip-off on, and caught the tempo carrying illegal oil near More Compound on Air India Road at around 6 am. This tempo was on its way to the other godown which we raided and seized the oil.” “A team of 80 staff was working on the operation including five Regional Deputy Controllers, a senior DCR En-

Continued from pg 3 « NSEL is facing now. Sinha admits that he had relied upon Amit Mukherjee and Jai Bahukhandi in respect of most of the matters pertaining to introduction of buying members and custody of physical stock credentials without having done cross verification. He confessed to not taking appropriate decisions to stop the market when the things were going out of hand. He said that by 2011-12, the scenario was such that if he did not allow the roll over, buyers would have defaulted with huge amount. On the other hand, if he continued to allow buyers to roll over their positions, exposures kept increasing every year by 20-25 per cent due to impact of roll over cost and exchange fee. He and his team were working on a parallel loan arrangement for buyers, but that didn’t materialize. He allowed exposures to increase despite knowing that sufficient stock to back the same wasn’t available. He failed to outsource the warehousing and quality check to an external agency. He failed to put in place the proper risk management system. Sinha confessed that he did not inform the Board about increasing exposure

Anjani Sinha’s role in Ahmedabad Stock Exchange controversy Prior to MCX, Anjani Sinha was the executive director of Ahmedabad Stock Exchange. Sinha was at the centre of a controversy in this exchange when SEBI removed Sinha and other members of the governing Board, allegedly because of their failure to ensure proper governance and implementation of the provisions of the SCRA and SEBI directives. On March 25, 2003, the Governing Board of Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, led by Anjani Sinha, was superseded by SEBI for its failure to curb illegal vyaj-badla and carryforward transactions by ASE member brokers, right inside the exchange premises. Sinha’s role in Magadh Stock Exchange issue SEBI superseded the Council of Management of the Patnabased Magadh Stock Ex-

Ponder awhile… “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” — H.L. Mencken

Nitish’s Bihar B

ihar chief minister Nitish Kumar loses no opportunity to talk about the “huge” development he has brought about in the state. He narrates how he has undertaken several poverty alleviation schemes, strategies to end unemployment and provide education to all. He also talks about how he has been able to maintain law and order. The chief minister has still to explain why in spite of Bihar being well-developed lakhs of people migrate to other states. In Mumbai, for instance, there are a large number of people from Bihar. In Jammu and Kashmir, in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also there are many Bihari migrants. As for law and order situation, the crime rate in Bihar is quite high. Shocking rape cases are reported from there. Unemployment of a large section of youth has led to violence. Now that he has ended the alliance with the BJP, it is to be seen how he is going to fare politically. While in the NDA, he got a good chance to play a big role. He is hurting himself entertaining all the while hostile thoughts against one leader in the BJP – Narendra Modi. And he is going with a begging bowl to the Centre asking for a special status. The Centre expects him to reciprocate and help it for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. All is not well with Bihar and for this to a great extent Nitish Kumar is responsible.

HE rules of the elections have landed in the eye of a storm much before the process of electioneering for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has begun. The storm is over the Supreme Court ruling, forcing the Election Commission to provide the option of ‘negative vote’ to the electorate. Now the EC is providing an extra button in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) which, after the names of all candidates, provides for a ‘None of the above’ (NOTA) option. Though this option was available to voters in earlier elections as well, the difference so far is that the NOTA votes were not counted as they were not a part of the ‘Ballot Machine’. Now that NOTA will be included on the EVM, the numbers of voters who use this option would be easily available and will be public, though, according to the SC ruling, this count would not affect the verdict of the election.

sentative by choice and not by compulsion. The provision also opens a new chapter of maturity and thoughtfulness, where voters, not going by hollow election promises, threats and negligence, are expected to closely monitor the character, principles and standing of the candidates in particular and their parties in general. If voters are educated to undergo this exercise thoroughly, this system would help the nation to get its ‘able’ lawmakers. Considering that ours is a ‘representative’ parliamentary democracy, the selection of a representative is the moot and most sensitive step that determines the strength of a democracy. Therefore, in theory at least, one must welcome this development. Having said this, one must also consider the down-side of the forthcoming system.

NOTA count This development, the newest in the history of Indian elections, has stirred up a hornet’s nest in political circles, as the NOTA count will speak volumes about the quality, real popularity and acceptance of all those who are in the fray. This provision of course has an upside and a deep downside. Considering that this system, being a Supreme Court directive, is here to stay, is bound to have both a short-term and a long-term impact on the electoral system and also on the right to franchise. Therefore, it is necessary to weigh this provision, before it comes in to existence. Yes, the logic says that if a voter has a fundamental and constitutional right to choose his representative, it is natural that he should also have the right to negate all those who are in the fray. Therefore, the NOTA option would enable voters to exercise their right to franchise ‘fully’ in the real sense of the term. This provision would also make the political parties think seriously before putting up their candidates. In a way, it would help in bringing in purity and transparency in the Indian political system. In today’s context, voters are forced to choose within the given choice and many a time in the absence of the ‘true’ representative candidate, electorates vote for the ‘lesser evil’. This goes against the basic principle of ‘election’, that is meant to ‘elect’ your reprePower of Weapons Goddess Durga possessed the unique individual powers of ten deities, which were symbolised by her ten arms, each of which held different weapons gifted to her by the Gods, like Indra’s Vajra, Shiva’s Trishul, Vishnu’s Sudarshan chakra, Varun’s conch, Agni’s spear, Vasuki`s snake. From Yama, she received an iron rod, a sword and shield. Vishwakarma gave her an axe and armor. The God of Mountains, Himavat gifted her with jewels and a lion to ride on. Durga was also given many other precious and magical gifts, new clothing, and a garland of immortal lotuses. The beautiful Durga, bedecked in jewels and golden armor and equipped with the fearsome weaponry of Gods, was ready to engage in battle with the fierce and cruel Mahishasura. When Mahishasura heard of Durga`s beauty, he wished to marry her and sent across a proposal. The Goddess replied that she would marry him on the condition that he defeats her in a battle first.

The Battlefield As Mahishasura’s armies were struck down effortlessly by Durga, it became obvious to him that heaven could not shield him from the Goddess’ wrath. No demon could fight her and win. Her breath would replenish her armies bringing back to life all of her soldiers who fell. The demons were in chaos and were easily de-

PERSPECTIVE Bharatkumar Raut There seems to be a contradiction in the SC ruling itself. On one hand the ruling makes it compulsory to provide the choice of NOTA on the EVM itself. But on the other hand, it also directs the EC not to count these votes. This provision beats logic. If NOTA is on the EVM along with list of candidates, and when voters are directed to make a choice between any of the candidate and None Of The Above, it is obvious that the choice of NOTA should also be counted. And if that is allowed, the next moot question is, if the votes polled to NOTA are more than the highest vote seeker in the list, logically NOTA is ‘elected’. In turn, it actually means that no candidate wins and thus the elections are null and void. It also means that the EC needs to undertake yet another election for that particular constituency within a stipulated period as no

Navratri legend-II feated and captured. Mahishasura was enraged by the disastrous events on the battlefield. He took on the form of a demonic buffalo and charged at the divine soldiers of Durga, killing many and lashing out with his whip-like tail. Durga’s lion pounced on the demon-buffalo and engaged him in a battle. The Victory The demon reverted once more to the form of the wild buffalo. He hid himself in the mountains from where he hurled boulders at Durga with his horns. Durga drank the divine nectar, the gift of Kuber. She then pounced on

constituency can remain unrepresented for more than six months. In this next round of election, no candidate who had contested the earlier election should be allowed to enter the fray as he/she is already rejected by the voters. Such a situation would put not only political parties but also the state administration and the EC in a quandary as the process of elections would become never-ending. In turn, the Lok Sabha or State Assemblies could never be a ‘Full House’. This would surely weaken the democratic process.

Voting percentage Moreover, even if NOTA is not the highest vote-seeker, the problem remains. The records of Indian elections show that most of the time, the voting percentage does not go beyond 60 per cent. It means nearly 40 per cent of voters do not turn up to the polling booths for various reasons. Therefore, the representative is often ‘elected’ by only half of the voting population or little more. In case the votes are allowed to exercise NOTA, the percentage of votes would come down drastically. It would mean that the mandate of those who would be sitting in the houses of representatives would reduce further. This eventuality would also weaken the notion of representative parliamentary democracy. The question is where do we want to take the nation? On one side, NOTA is logical but on the other side, its implementation raises more questions than answers and opens the flood-gates for bringing in anarchy in our democratic system. The need of the hour is to educate voters on one hand and to make political parties more responsible on the other. If political parties field candidates who are worthy of the ticket and do not look at their so-called ‘elective merit’ only, voters would not be forced to press the NOTA button. For this, it is necessary to educate the voters. How many voters, even in urban constituencies, study election manifestoes of various political parties and the resume of candidates before heading for the ballot booth? The answer is depressing. If such voters exercise the right of NOTA, it would not serve any purpose but to expand the area of chaos in our democracy. The writer is a Shiv Sena Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha

Lotus Legend When Lord Rama was fighting a battle with Ravana to rescue his wife Sita whom Ravana had abducted and held as hostage in Lanka, his kingdom. As the battle continued with neither parties failing, Lord Rama decided to seek the blessings of Shakti (Goddess Durga) in order to defeat the demon. The puja which was undertaken by Lord Rama required 108 blue lotuses for the worship of Goddess Durga but he could manage only 107. He decided not to discard the puja due to lack of a single lotus flower and instead thought of offering one of his eyes that was lotus-shaped and blue in color at the Goddess feet. As he was about to offer his eye, Goddess Durga appeared and satisfied with his devotion, granted her blessing. Lord Rama won the battle against Ravana.

He enjoyed the support of the most of the members and that helped him to muster maximum votes and kept the carping critics quite. N Srinivasan has had the last laugh over his detractors as he was elected unopposed as the BCCI president for a third year at its Annual General Meeting in Chennai on Sunday. “IF diamonds were pebbles on the seashores, people won’t stoop to pick them up,” said A.G. Gardner in his famous essay on ‘Letter Writing’. Too much of anything is not good both for the game and its fans. They will be bored. Seven ODIs in a row will make the even fans to ask when this series is going to be over. Already in this space age, Test Cricket has lost its lustre. An ODI compared to T20 looks like treveling in a Trans-Siberian Express when the same destination is reached by aeroplane within half a day. People want everything to be short and brief. It is high time Test Cricket changed into ODI of two innings for each side and ODI is converted into two T20 innings per side. Then only the game can sustain interest for a long time. Ideally it should be five T20s and three ODIs at the maximum. Another decade from now even T20 will become banal necessitating T10. — Lakshman Sundar, Vashi

Unwarranted WEH menace LAST Saturday, I was traveling along the Western Express Highway (WEH), while we were nearing Goregaon, we found that traffic was at a standstill, and we thought it was a road accident or some trailer/ truck might have turned turtle. However, when we crawled to the Dindoshi flyover we observed that the traffic was diverted away from the flyover as it was undergoing repairs. So the cause of the traffic jam was understood. It is reported that this flyover is only 14 years old and the distress that had been observed raises doubt about its quality. Of course the other reason may be indisciplined users of the road, who rampantly flouted the load restrictions, for which the bridge had been designed. The MMRDA should be more vigilant to maintain the designed loading of the bridge, by

20th Century Age of Conflict A] First World War INTRODUCTION: The first half of the 20th century is described as the Age of Conflict. The Age of Conflict began with the First World War, followed by the rise of dictatorship and the Second World War. Millions of soldiers were killed/disabled in the First World War. After the First World War the political map of Europe underwent change, with the emergence of a number of new nation-states. Progress in science and technology, collapse of the dictatorial regimes, spread of democracy and experiments in internationalism were the positive outcome of this period. Causes/Reasons of the First World War 1. Imperialism of European nations 2. Aggressive Nationalism 3. Militarism 4. Diplomatic Groupism 5. Kaiser William II 6. Division of Europe 7. Political complications in the Balkan region 8. Immediate Reason Course of the War: 1) Austria declared war on Serbia on 28th July, 1914. 2) Germany objected to mobilisation of Russian army and declared war on Russia. 3) France declared war on Germany. 4) England was dragged into the war by the German invasion of Belgium and Holland. 5) Italy entered the war in 1915 on the side of Allied Powers. 6) America declared war on Germany on 6th April, 1917. 7) Russian withdrew from the war in October 1917 after the Bolshevik Revolution. 8) Germany surrendered on 11th November 1918 and the war came to an end. 9) Peace Conference took place at Paris in 1919-20. 10) Unjust Treaty of Versailles was imposed on Germany in 1920. Effects/Consequences: 1) Enormous destruction of human lives and property. 2) Adverse effect on the European economy and the collapse of the industries in Europe. 3) Shortage of essential commodities and price rise caused discontent among the people. 4) Emergence of America as a super power. 5) Dissolution of the empires of the defeated nations and creation of new nations-states. 6) Adverse social effects. 7) Establishment of the League of Nations. 8) Unjust peace treaties sowed the seeds of the Second World War.

Some important Questions Q 1 Explain the term aggressive nationalism. >> The first episode will showcase food preservation techniques from India as well as abroad

« WATCH: HORIZONS BBC’s Horizons Comes to IndIa BBC is now airing the third season of its show Horizons. The first episode, which will air this weekend, focuses on food wastage and the show comes to India to discover some of the revolutionary methods that India has introduced to curb food wastage. India, which is the second largest food producer in the world, has a shocking 30% food wastage rate! The show will feature scientist Dr. H M Chawla from IIT Delhi, who

has invented FRU WAS, a bio degradable emulsion that increases the shelf life of fruits by 3-4 times. The emulsion partially clogs the pores of the fruit, slowing the perspiration process which in return slows down the ripening process, giving it enough time to reach market shelves. Another part of the episode will see the show in Rome, at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Association headquarters as well as

the Netherlands, where the show will showcase a cold chain monitoring system where food is monitored using micro chips to understand and control the transport cycle. The show has an interesting premise and is certainly a must-watch. Make sure you keep your weekend free for this one. When October 12 & 13, Saturday: 7am & 2pm and Sunday: 8pm Where BBC World News

Ping Pong is here! R

egular globe trotters were extremely excited about dim sum experts Ping Pong opening in India at Bandra Kurla Complex. While we did hear a lot of hushed whispers about the restaurant serving food that uses frozen ingredients, we prevented this from colouring our opinions and went there with a blank slate. Before we elaborate further, you’ll see four Chinese expressions carved on Ping Pong’s ceiling. They call these terms the essence of the restaurant. So, we decided to break down our review and tell you how they fared in each. Love at first sight: Ping Pong’s decor is largely standard worldwide — massive, with a bar section right across the entrance, dark hued wooden seating arrangement with Chinese lanterns lighting up the place. Love at first sight? Not really, but the decor is warm enough to make you feel comfortable. Extravagant: While Ping Pong is extravagant, it will not intimidate you. This holds true. Basically, you don’t have to think about what you are wearing before you enter. There were ladies entering in evening gowns and also professionals like us who didn’t have the time to look in the mirror after they left home. Even their staff is dressed in unassuming t-shirts and jeans. Straight to the point: By this, I think they were talking about their speedy service as Ping Pong is known for their quick meals. However, we opted to try their elaborate meal and started with a Vegetarian Wanton Soup, which came with a vegetable wanton dunked in a yummy, tart broth (`220). We then ordered the Vegetarian Spring Roll (`250 for three pieces), which was like any other spring roll that we’ve had, and the Vietnamese Rice Paper Prawn Roll (`350 for three pieces) which again, was nothing surprising. For dumplings (all of them had three pieces each), we ordered the Spicy

Vegetarian Dumpling (`250), which although a little far from authentic, was very appealing. The Pak Choi Dumpling (`300) was too bland for us, while the Chive Dumpling (`325) was better than the Coriander Dumpling (`325), despite both having king prawns in them. Next up was Chicken Rice Pot (`350) and Vegetarian

concoctions on the menu and edamame beans from their nibbles section. Opportunity comes but once: First impressions are important. While our experience was good, we were looking for some items that would really stand out. And, just to clear the air, we were told that they only import the items that are not available locally.

Rice Pot (`325) — both delicious options for a quick meal. They have very limited options for dessert and we tasted the Molten Cake which was like choco lava cake (`220) and Chinese Fluffy Ginger Cake (`220), which is a star item on their dessert menu. Also, don‘t forget to try their cocktails as they have some innovative

e picked up the Ragi-Meal and Broken Wheat -Meal from MonaVie’s One Heat & Eat range. 100% natural and vegetarian, each 500g box comes with two 250g foil sachets inside which you can heat up in a frying pan, microwave or by immersing in boiling water (or as one motorcyclist suggested, on a hot tank) all ready to eat in 3-5 minutes. Both meals are trans-fat, preservative free; MSG and artificial colour free and honestly, they don’t really need any of it. The Ragi-Meal is also gluten free and has chick peas and soy beans. If you are a fan of ragi you will like this. If you aren’t a fan of ragi… you may be pleasantly surprised. It tastes exactly as you would imagine it would — homely, warming, filling and nutritious. The Broken Wheat- Meal comes mixed with moong dal and rajma and is quite delicious in a comfort food kind of way. Texture is strictly okay and flavour-wise, both are gently spiced which for some, may border on the bland side. So, if you like your meals with a little more fight, some pickle on the side would add just the right punch. While a recommended serving size says each sachet serves two, if you making a meal of it, a sachet would just about do for one. Using technology developed by the Defence Food Research Lab Ministry of Defence, Mysore, these are ideal for long treks, camping trips and the like as they are easy to pack and not fussy to eat. Considering the ingredients, the price between,`300-320 is a bit high, especially for the quantity. However, the quality and convenience might just justify the price. A nice, wholesome addition to ready-to-eat in minutes market. >> These ready-to-eat packets are ideal for treks and camping trips

ego… the word brings back a lot of memories. The countless hours spent building with colourful blocks, fighting with friends over the last block needed to complete your masterpiece… all these memories came rushing back to me when I heard that Funskool has set up a Lego Zone at Hamleys in High Street Phoenix. Having lost touch with the toy, I was excited to see what Lego in the 21st century was all about. The well-decorated Lego Zone is a treat for children (and adults!). Boxes of different collections of Lego line the walls while there are glass covered table tops that display fully constructed Lego models such as a fire station, police station and themebased figures inspired from cartoons and popular movies. Of all the constructed models that were on display, the fire trains, house sets and scenic sets such as a tea party set and station and the Transformers inspired figures caught my a romantic boat ride. They also have a fantastic range of Star attention. With their intricate and seemingly complex Wars inspired merchandise, including tiny light sabers and designs, they are a far cry from the Lego that I grew up with. weapons for the starships! It’s no wonder that there’s a section of the zone that’s meant A few other collections also caught my attention. First only for the ages 16 and above. The collection features amongst these was the Architecture range. It is meant for complex constructions to build planes, helicopters slightly older children (ages 12 and above) and features and trains. popular, real-world monuments such as the White House, But, that doesn’t mean that Lego doesn’t have anything Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, the Burj for children. A majority of the store is dedicated to Lego Khalifa and such. It’s a good way for children to learn about collection that includes vehicles such as cars, trucks and famous architecture while having fun. Another one I quite liked… and umm… felt like buying, was a complex robot model. Not only is it a three-foot tall robot that you can make out of Lego, it is computerised and actually functions as a robot! This is a part of their complex range meant for ages 16 and above. So, what are my final thoughts on the Lego Zone at Hamleys? It is a well-designed section that is primarily aimed at kids. They will refresh their collection every time the brand launches something new. The prices range from `1,500 to `7,000 for most of the products. However, they do have collections that cost more than that, such as the robot which is priced at `37,499. The zone is a must-visit for all Lego fans out there... no matter how old you are.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (October 11, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (October 10, 2013) a net 13.50 points (0.22%) and closed at the 6020 point level. The market opened down at the 6001 points level. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 10.52 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5979 points level at 11.00 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6020 points level at 1.22 p.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session and moved in a range of 54 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 29 were gainers, 20 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Buying was seen in auto, metal, IT, healthcare, power, realty, and technology stocks, while selling was seen in banking, oil & gas and FMCG stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 13.78%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 754 were gainers, 557 were losers and 107 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6123 points level. The next resistance is at the 6223 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6012 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5989. Support (2) = 5957. Resistance (1) = 6043. Resistance (2) = 6066. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the 25 days moving average has crossed above the 200 days moving average. Further, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages, and all the four moving averages are rising and also posi tively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 5912 point’s level.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

p until a few years ago, The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) qualification could only be completed by going to the UK and securing articles with a CA firm there. However, due to the MOU signed with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), it is possible for Indian CAs to additionally gain ICAEW by completing three integrated papers. This opens up two new avenues to ICAl members: ICAEW’s global recognition gives members many opportunities to work across the globe and it also gives an additional set of integrated skills that help Indian companies gain a global perspective, which tangibly accelerates growth. This is reflected in the fact that 95% of the FTSE 100 companies have a CA on the board and greater than 50 of the FTSE 100 have a CA as CFO. With India needing increased growth from all sectors, these newly minted ICAI-ICAEW members are set to catapult business with their new skills. It will also provide opportunity to these Indian graduates to be employed in the UK and Europe and a few of our first batch have already gone to the UK to work. The first batch of graduates were be felicitated last evening. The ICAEW (Institute of Char-

tered Accountants in England and Wales) and GTG (Get Through Guides) organised an interesting and informative panel discussion on ‘The Global Finance Professional: Have We Arrived?’, followed by the ICAEW Graduation At Taj Lands End on 9th October 2013. “Accountants play an important role in today’s financial reporting and all sectors. Bodies like ICEAW is trying to create perfect force for such important role,” said Chief Guest Yezdi Malegam in his key note address on ‘The finance profession in India – the importance of professional skills needed in taking India forward’. Yezdi Malegam is the chairman of National Advisory Committee on Accounting Standards, a board member of Reserve Bank of India and an ex-president of The Institute of Chartered Accountants India. This was followed by Panel discussions, which were moderated by Vandana Saxena Poria OBE and CEO of GTG, with representatives from anchor partners (Tata, Mahindra, Deloitte, GT etc.), representatives from qualified ICAEW participants and representatives from participants undergoing the course, namely: ManaswiniGoel, Joint General Manager- Treasury. HDFC ; S. Meena, Deputy Manager – Deloitte; Khushroo Panthaky, Partner at Grant Thornton and S Venkatraman, Mahindra & Mahindra.

It said: “If the current weak economic situation persists it will have a significant impact on the asset quality of the banks which will substantially increase the provisioning requirement in the current financial year. BUSINESS BRIEFS Sebi Surveillance System Generates 100 Alerts Everyday

Market regulator Sebi’s surveillance system generates about 100 alerts of suspicious trading activities, of which at least 10 are pursued for further action. To provide a broad idea about surveillance mechanism in place for the capital market, these figures were disclosed by Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) Chairman U K Sinha here yesterday. Talking about frauds happening in the securities market, he said that the regulator has a sophisticated surveillance mechanism in place for detecting such activities.

Amitabh Bachchan: A force to reckon with

mitabh Bachchan may be growing old but he has shown no signs of slowing down and has indeed been the perfect example of aging gracefully. Amitabh Bachchan, who turns 71 on October 11, once said, “Everyone must accept that we will age and age is not always flattering”. Though he mouthed the words himself, his very success contradicts the notion. In an era starkly different from his time, the seventies and eighties Bachchan still holds a firm place in the industry and commands a sense of power and respect that is unmatched till date. On the personal front he has been a great son, a loving husband, an inspirational father and a doting grandfather. Amitabh Bachchan, despite his unconventional looks, managed to

‘Making-up’ Amitabh On the glorious occasion of Amitabh Bachchan’s 71st birthday today, his acclaimed loyal make-up man for the last 44 years Deepak Sawant speaks his heart out in an exclusive to ADC. By Chaitanya Padukone

Having won a prestigious award as an Outstanding make-up man both for your excellence and exemplary loyalty, has it made a difference? It was an emotionally overwhelming moralebooster for me especially since I received the esteemed award instituted by Bharat and Dorris from my Boss, superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Generally its dress-designers who are invariably grabbing the lime-light. Makeup men rarely get recognition for their valuable work. In my acceptance speech, I shared the credit entirely with Amit-ji. It is because I have this prerogative of handling his facial makeup, for the past four decades, that I am recognised and respected everywhere. Never have I taken leave while Amit-ji is required to face the camera. Whenever he is ‘not’ shooting, by default I get my ‘holidays’.

Even after having turned a Bhojpuri movie’s superhit ‘showman’ producer, you continue to handle ‘make-up’ for your own productions? Guess am the only successful producer-cummake-up ‘dada’ in Bollywood who has to make up his mind too (laughs). Since Amitabh-ji has been the supreme casting coup in my Bhojpuri movies, I had to handle his ‘make-up’ as well. Initially, Bachchan-saab was skeptical about making his Bhojpuri debut. But once he went through the script and was convinced, he was co-operation personified. The entire Bachchan parivaar including Jaya-ji, Abhishek-ji and Aishwarya-ji treat me like their family member. Their bonding and apnaapan is among the major reasons behind my dedicated commitment to them. On Amit-ji’s 71st birthday today, I wish him a long, healthy, active glorious life ahead. Even in my aagle janam, I should be working with Amit-ji as my benevolent Boss, is what I what I always pray. We are planning to release, in the near future, a biographical DVD

album on AB-Sir’s illustrious life and times.

To what extent does facial make-up play a role in adding credence to the screen-characters, as in Amitabh’s case? Actually it is supposed to be 25 per cent, but I feel it’s much more. During close-up shots, the visual impact of the scene-wise facial makeup is maximum. Take the ideal instance of Amitabh as the dockyard ‘coolie’ and then his overnight transformation to a debonair suave underworld don in Deewar. Almost every movie of the versatile super-actor Big B offers me a creative challenge. Be it Khuda Gawah, Black or Paa or the recent Satyagraha where with his 60-plus-aged look, many felt he reminded them of an on-screen alag avataar of Anna Hazare. Now as the ongoing KBC’s charismatic host, he looks dashing, rejuvenated and in his early 50s with the bright cosmetic touch-ups. This I guess is the sheer magic of make-up.

make a mark and stand out in the glamour world of Bollywood, on the basis of his immense talent and the need he fulfilled in the changing society of his times. It was in 1973 that Prakash Mehra, after being rejected by the top actors of that time like Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar, etc. went to Amitabh Bachchan and offered him the role of Inspector Vijay for the film Zanjeer. This revenge saga came like a blast of fresh air in the midst of the popular romantic films and established Amitabh as the ‘Angry Young Man’. It has been 40 years since the film released and Amitabh has not looked back since then and is still a force to reckon with. In the ensuing period he gave film lovers great hits like Don, Trishul, Sholay, Majboor, Mr. Natwarlal, Naseeb, Coolie, Don, The Great Gambler, etc. Though some of his films may not have done well, Amitabh has

never failed as an actor. With Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gam Amitabh was freed from the shackles of playing the lead actor. He took on different shades of characters in movies like Paheli, Viruddh, Nishabd, but it was Sanjay Leela Bhansali who gave him a complex character in Black. The nuances of the character were brought out well by Amitabh that it turned out to be an award winning performance. He was also appreciated in films like Cheeni Kum (2007) and Paa (2009). Recently he regaled his fans with superlative performances in Buddha Hoga Tera Baap, and Satyagrah despite the films having mundane scripts. The hallmark of this actor lies in his consistency of churning out one great performance after another. Reams and Reams can be written about Amitabh but it would still not do justice to the man’s talent and humility.

Dia happy to don producer’s mantle for Bobby Jasoos A

ctress-turned-producer Dia Mirza says she has no qualms about not being the leading lady in her production venture Bobby Jasoos and is happy being behind the camera. In her ambitious second production Bobby Jasoos, Vidya Balan plays the lead role. Dia coowns production banner Born Free Entertainment with beau Sahil Sangha. Their first film was Love Breakups Zindagi in 2011. “I am not selfish. I don’t know why I am not doing this film. All I know is that I want to make this film, I don’t want to see myself on screen to know that it is my film. This is my baby and I want to nurture. I did not set up Born Free because I wanted to see myself in films. I want to take my aspirations to another level”, Dia

said in an interview to PTI. “When you are an actor you are a small part of it, but when you are a producer you expand your horizons, go beyond the limitations. As an actor you do not have that much control but you can do a lot as a producer”, she said. When asked if she loves being

behind the camera now, she says, “I love being in front of the camera but I love the fact that I have more control as a producer. My passion is cinema and to translate the passion this way, it feels good”. Direction seems to be the next step for Dia. “Yes, for sure (I will direct). But I don’t know when, maybe when I have a story I want to tell, I will direct”, she said. She could only think of Vidya Balan for this film. Though Vidya takes some time to give her nod for a project, to Dia’s surprise, she agreed for this project in a month. “When we took the script to her we were sure she would like the film. Vidya is a very strong and big component in the nurturing process. We are not making this film to shock anyone”.

Shiv Pandit who was noticed in Shaitaan is now in the big league with the Akshay Kumar starrer Boss. Here is a brief interview held in the director’s office. Some excerpts.

Shiv Pandit gets candid about Boss!

By Sandeep Hattangadi

What is your character in the film? The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit Pookiri Raja and I am essaying the same role that Prithviraj did in the original of a young lover boy named Shiv who is in love with the character played by Aditi Rao Hydari and because of this my elder brother Boss played by Akshay Kumar and father played by Mithun Chakravarthy are in a conflict.

Tell us something about your background. My father was a government servant with a transferable job and I had to

school in various places like Karnataka, Delhi and Chandigarh. When I came to Mumbai I got a job as a disc jockey in Radio Mirchi which I pursued for two years, did a few commercials, later did TV shows like FIR and then anchored IPL cricket series and then I did Shaitaan which got me Boss in a lead romantic role.

Do you share a similar relationship with your father? My father was in the Central Government and supported me a lot and I am thankful to have a father like him. In fact the character played by Mithun

Chakravarthy is similar to my father. How was it like working with big stars like Akshay Kumar, Danny Dengzongpa, and Mithun Chakravarthy? They are not at all serious as they look on screen but are easygoing and full of fun. Akshay is an easy going person on the sets but in front of the camera he becomes very serious. Mithun Sir and Danny Sir are fit though their age is past 60 and they seem like young men. I learnt a lot from them on how to act before the camera. I also learnt the importance of exercise from Akshay Kumar when I visited his gym and he gave me useful tips. And your co-star Aditi Rao Hydari? I got along very well with her and our chemistry is good on screen as in personal lives.

Aditi is a good dancer? Yes. Unfortunately I don’t have a dance number with her but just a background song.

he most peculiar piece of news that came out recently, was about filmmakers planning to clean up their films, because satellite channels are not willing to show movies with an ‘A’ certificate. Which means, that it is not their own conscience but greed that controls them. That films reflect changes in society is a given, but in their rush to give ‘bold’ content, filmmakers were crossing the line. Fortunately, so far, in our society there is still some maryada, Kainaat Arora in some sense of decency, which Grand Masti is now fast eroding. Rekha Turns 59 B

ollywood’s mysterious beauty Rekha turns 59 today but don’t let her age fool you, as she can still give girls half her age a run for their money. Rekha was born in Chennai to Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli on October 10, 1954. Since she was born out of the wedlock her father did not acknowledge his paternity during her childhood. Due to a troubled financial state, Rekha had to quit school to start a career in acting and started her acting career in the South and soon made her Bollywood debut with the 1969 release Anjana Safar. Because of her dark complexion and southern features, she was regarded as the Ugly Duckling of the industry, but soon surprised all as she turned into a graceful swan. Rekha started paying more attention to her make-up and styling and also started following a strict diet and practicing yoga. In 1990, Rekha married Delhi-based industrialist Mukesh Aggarwal. However, a year later, while she was in the US, he committed suicide. She was rumoured to have been married to actor Vinod Mehra in 1973, but she

always denied it. However, her most interesting and enigmatic relationship has been with megastar Amitabh Bachchan, which still is a mystery to many. In a career spanning more than four decades, the beauty has been a part of many hit films like Do Anjaane, Ghar, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Khubsoorat, Umrao Jaan, Ijaazat and Silsila to name a few. She’ll be next seen in superhero flick Krrish 3.

ualised images of girls across various media. There are people who say proudly, they are modern, and they don’t mind their kids drinking with them, but in any society that calls itself civilised, respect for elders is built in, and elders have to earn that respect. It is disheartening when cheap item songs are played at religious functions; it is shocking with a blatantly vulgar film like Grand Masti can boast of making 100 crores. Watching kids crack off-colour jokes on TV talent shows, or little girls made to gyrate in skimpy costumes is disturbing. And the lack of sharam is there to see. Some filmmakers had made a career out of smallbudget films that had nothing in them except sleaze passing off as boldness, or at least as much as censors would allow. It is good to know that at least some satellite channels have a little sharam and put adult content on late night slots. Because of them now filmmakers have to censor themselves. Who’d have believed it!

Akshay beats MJ’s world record field, Little Gransden, UK, on October 3, 2013. Macro Arts (UK) was responsible for the manufacturing of the poster. Incidentally, Macro Arts is the same company that had made Michael Jackson’s poster too. The world’s largest poster of Boss is 58.87 metres wide and 54.94 metres high. When the Guinness officials came to measure it, it was recorded that the Indian Boss poster had beaten Michael Jackson’s record by a 15-20 per cent margin. ollywood superstar Salman Khan, who had undergone surgery for a nerve ailment disorder, was said to be in trouble as the ailment had resurfaced, but it seems that the Dabangg dude is on his way to recovery as was revealed by none other than Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The Big

TEST STATISTICS Mat Runs HS 198 15837 248*

I don't know about cricket but still I watch cricket to see Sachin play. Not because I love his play [but] because I want to know the reason why my country's production goes down by five per cent when he's in batting. US President Barack Obama

First of all hats off to a man who will be playing his 200 Tests and has 100 international centuries against his name. I was lucky to captain him during his debut tour. He came across as a calm and a composed person. The way he handled him as a 16-yearold was amazing. The best thing about him is he is the same old gentleman he was in 1989 given he has achieved great cricketing success. Kris Srikkanth

I know he's retired from ODIs and T20s, but now when we sit in front of television (after his 20 0th Test) we will miss his presence altogether for the first time after 24 years. It was always going to be a difficult decision for him, but now that he's taken it we should respect it. Kiran More I thought he could have continued for one more year. But like Vijay Merchant (former India opener) had always said you should retire when people are asking why (did you retire) and not why not (retire). That's the way it is. Tendulkar is the greatest ever cricketer in the world. I don't think anyone can overtake his records and the phenomenal number of runs he has scored. He was also so humble and never responded to criticism, choosing to let his bat do the talking Ajit Wadekar

It's a perfect decision, I think, but still a very emotional thing for me. It was eventually his call. He has given so much pleasure to all of us for the last 24-25 years. He will always remain a legend of the game. Sameer Dighe

His schoolboy-like enthusiasm for the game is something I envy and admire. For the team he is the best available coaching manual. Mahendra Singh Dhoni

What he has done is set a benchmark for future generations which, probably, would be almost impossible for anyone to emulate. Rahul Dravid

There are two kind of batsmen in the world. One, Sachin Tendulkar. Two, all the others. Andy Flower

THE FINAL MASTERCLASS

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th Test match to be his last international game By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: The script was in the making and the stage was being set for months together. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is finally all set to take his gloves off after the 200th Test match which will be played against West Indies most probably on his home turf – the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Tendulkar, 40, shared the limelight in 1988 for the first time with his childhood buddy Vinod Kambli with a magnificent 664 run partnership contributing 326 runs for his school Shardasharam. The partnership which was a world record for the callow 14-year-old boy stood the test of time for 18 years. Tendulkar who announced his retirement on Thursday had earlier called it quits in the one-day international format on December 23, 2012, and had announced that this year’s Indian Premier League and the Champions League would be his last venture with the Mumbai Indians. He had played a lone T20 against South Africa and then decided against playing in order to give opportunities to the younger lot. The master craftsman with over 50,000 runs to his credit in all forms of the game was emotional when he contacted the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s president N Srini-

vasan where he expressed that it would be hard to imagine a life without playing because that was the only thing that he had done since being an 11-year-old. “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It’s hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it’s all I have ever done since I was 11 years old,” said Tendulkar in a statement to the board president N Srinivasan. Tendulkar categorically stated in the letter that he was looking forward to playing on ‘his home soil’ added that representing India in the 662 international matches all over the would was an honour. “It’s been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil, as I call it a day,” Tendulkar added. He thanked the board for allowing him to decide about his international Test career and also expressed gratitude to his family and well-wishers for understanding his perspective. “I thank the BCCI for everything over the years and for permitting me to move on when my heart feels it's time! I thank my family for their patience and under-

Tendulkar’s retirement marks an end of a golden era: Pawar EW DELHI: Former BCCI President Sharad Pawar said that Sachin Tendulkar's decision to quit Test cricket marks the end of a golden era. "Sachin Tendulkar's decision to retire from Test cricket marks the end of a golden era for not only Indian cricket but of cricket world over. He strode the arena of cricket like a colossus and in his long innings, established many a milestones for himself and the game," Pawar, who was also the former ICC president, said. "His single-minded devotion, love and enthusiasm for the game were the driving force in his achievements. He is greatly admired by all cricket playing nations and has an immense fan following cutting across all social and cultural boundaries," he said in a statement. standing. Most of all, I thank my fans and well-wishers who through their prayers and wishes have given me the strength to go out and perform at my best,” Tendulkar said. The Mumbai stalwart who debuted against the raging Pakistani seam attack in hostile conditions in the winter of 1989 managed only 15 runs in the match. His grit and determination was seen by the world during the Sialkot Test match when he was struck by a Waqar Younis bouncer but rubbed off the blood from his oozing nose and went on to strike 57 runs for India. However, his first century did not elude him for long, as in August next year, he charmed the audience at Old Trafford with a scintillating unbeaten 119 against the English. That was the day which got the master off to the road to a ‘Century of centuries’ which he crossed last year against minnows Bangladesh at Mirpur. It was this statistic that eluded him right through the World Cup. Tendulkar’s singular adaptility and delightful array of performances won him high regard not only from the Indian fraternity but also from the ‘Don’ [Sir Donald Bradman] himself. Although, he played at various positions in the one-day

EW DELHI: He was a member of the national selection panel that picked 16-yearold prodigy called Sachin Tendulkar for the tour of Pakistan in 1989 and to this day, 73-year-old Akash Lal remembers every minute detail of that meeting that changed the course of Indian cricket history. "It may be nearly 25 years since that selection meeting in Mumbai but I still remember it wasn't an unanimous decision. Ultimately, it went in favour of Sachin by 3-2 verdict and he was selected in the Indian team," Lal, who played 94 first-class matches for Delhi and Punjab in between 1957-1976, told PTI. The five-member committee that selected Tendulkar comprised chairman of selection committee Raj Singh Dungarpur, Akash Lal, Ramesh Saxena, Gundappa Viswanath and Naren Tamhane. GCA also wants to host Tendulkar’s 200th Test: MCA sources

MUMBAI: The tug of war to host Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and final Test is intensifying with the Gujarat Cricket Association, headed by BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, also expressing interest in hosting it as per the BCCI's rotation policy. "I heard from GCA people that they are not going to let it go as it's their turn to host a Test after Karnataka State CA's as per the rotation system. GCA is full of people who are connected with BJP and they are not willing to let this golden opportunity slip out of their hands," said a top source in MCA. MCA has already written to the Cricket Board that since it was Tendulkar's 200th Test, the match against the West Indies should be held at the Wankhede Stadium here. Cricket Association of Bengal has also shown interest to conduct the match, after his announcement today that he will retire post that game.BCCI's programmes and fixtures committee is yet to meet after the Board's AGM to finalise the venues for the series involving two Test matches and three ODIs.

younger we put him out there in the middle, longer he will serve the country," stated Lal, who feels that only Sunil Gavaskar and former England captain Peter May were at par when it came to technique against fast bowlers. Tamhane had the first glimpse of Tendulkar when he was playing a Kanga League game in Mumbai but he distinctly remembers the Irani Cup match where he scored a century for Rest of India with Gursharan Singh giving him company with a fractured wrist in order to help him complete his century. "It was a flawless knock from a 16-year-old. Each and every shot had an aristocratic value. What I found at that age was his dedication. There was nothing else that mattered apart from hard practice. He was humble and ready to learn. He has never spoken ill about anybody and not for once did he indulge in any politicking. That was hallmark of a great human being," he said.

Sachin Tendulkar best ever batsman ahead of Don Bradman in online polls than any other player, but he could not make it to the top 10 of ICC's career-best ranking system, whose complex algorithm ranks players by their achievements at the height of their form.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS...

L

ONDON: Sachin Tendulkar was voted as the greatest batsman of all time, ahead of Don Bradman and Brian Lara, in an online poll conducted by an English newspaper after the news of the Indian batting icon's retirement from Test cricket broke out on Thursday. 'The Telegraph' asked its readers to choose the best ever from among 10 batsmen -- Tendulkar, Bradman, Lara, Vivian Richards, Ricky Ponting,

Gary Sobers, Jacques Kallis, Len Hutton, Rahul Dravid and Allan Border. 2108 voted till 8:30pm IST and Tendulkar received 1,146 votes (54.36%), far ahead of Bradman -- who polled 558 (26.47%). Lara and Richards were distant third and fourth, garnering 132 (6.26%) and 118 (5.6%) respectively. The newspaper though said that Tendulkar might have gathered more runs and centuries in Test cricket

Tendulkar has 13 coins from his coach Ramakant Achrekar. He would win a coin if he got through an entire net session without being dismissed. Holds the unique distinction of scoring a century on debut in Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Duleep Trophy. Tendulkar was a ball boy during the 1987 semi-final between India and England. There are two wards in New Delhi's Tihar Jail, one named after Tendulkar and another after Vinod Kambli. The duo shared a 664-run unbroken partnership in a school match. With both players sticking to a plan of all-out attack, Monfils grabbed the initiative, breaking to take a 3-1 lead and managed to save the break points that Federer carved out before going on to seal the match. Federer, who made early exits at Wimbledon and the US Open, came to Shanghai seeking much-needed points as he bids to reach next month’s World Tour Finals, which he has won a record six times. Earlier, seventh seed JoWilfried Tsonga brushed aside Kei Nishikori to reach the quarter-finals as Juan Martin del Potro progressed with a walkover. The powerful Tsonga had a battle on his hands early on against the Japanese 12th seed but came out on top winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-0.

Hot Spot dropped for Ashes

YDNEY: The decision-review technology known as Hot Spot has been dumped just weeks before Australia’s Ashes series against England, reports said. The controversial infrared camera system has been dropped by the host broadcaster due to costs, Hot Spot’s Australian inventor Warren Brennan told Fairfax Media. The decision-review device, which uses heat sensors and infrared cameras to detect contact between the ball, bat and pads, will now not feature in the showpiece five-Test series, beginning at Brisbane’s Gabba ground on November 21. “It’s their decision and that’s what’s been communicated to us. As far as I’m concerned, it is final,” Brennan said. “We’re just moving on with things. Channel Nine have got a new deal with Cricket Australia which I know has cost them a lot more money. I gather there had to be some restructuring of costs.” The development leaves the ball-tracking component, Eagle Eye, audio evidence picked up by stump microphones and slow-motion replays as the remaining tools at the disposal of the third official for decision reviews in the Ashes. Trust in the Hot Spot technology was severely tested during the first leg of the back-to-back Ashes series won 3-0 by England in July-August. While match umpires were criticised for poor decisions, Hot Spot was at the centre of a succession of contentious verdicts involving fine edges.
