Medical College, Pune and works as a Professor of Psychiatry at the B.J. Medical College and Sassoon Hospital in Pune. He was a founding Director of Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health and later moved on to become Director of Film and Television Institute of India.

hree weeks after the Bombay High Court asked State Public Works Department (PWD) and the official liquidator to clear the shrubbery inside the Shakti Mills in Mahalaxmi in Central Mumbai where a photojournalist girl was gangraped in August, the court on Thursday directed the PWD, the official liquidator and the representatives of Shakti Mills to hold a joint meeting to discuss about the Rs.17 lakh price quoted by the PWD to clear debris and shrubbery from inside the mills compound.

In its last hearing, Justice N.M. Jamdar of the Bombay High Court, who was hearing a ‘winding up’ petition of the defunct Shakti Mills, had observed, “On an immediate basis, shrubbery and trees below ten feet high and those growing from the side inside the Shakti Mills compound can be removed to enable access to the security guards patrolling the area. The shrubbery shall be cut starting from the periphery. In the first phase the shrubbery and other debris can be cleared, in the second phase the compound wall can be fixed and barbed wire fencing can be done along with construction of sliding gates and security cabins.

In the third phase the structures inside the site which has become dilapidated and dangerous can be pulled down.”

This verdict saved Campa Cola CHS from the civic body’s hammers for another 28 days. The apex court said the residents can stay put until November 11, after which they can sue the builders but can't stay on.

Since last month, delegations of residents have been meeting various people, including crusader Anna Hazare, who reportedly promised to come back (contact) after taking advice from his advocate.

round 80 staff from the Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies on Thursday raided the godowns of oil mafia near the airport boundary in Kalina.

The team started its operation in the wee hours of Thursday and continued till late into the night.

This is not the first raid that has been conducted in these premises. Earlier also, the Vakola police, with the help of a similar department, conducted a raid and booked several people involved.

However, the oil dealers whose godowns were raided by the Controller of Rationing have alleged that the department has targeted selected oil dealers but has not shown interest in catching the major illegal dealers.

Talking to the ADC, P.T. Kadam, Rationing Officer who was present at the spot said, “We laid a trap at around 12 am on Wednesday night on the basis of a tip-off on, and caught the tempo carrying illegal oil near More Compound on Air India Road at around 6 am. This tempo was on its way to the other godown which we raided and seized the oil.”

“Kapil, who had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, was admitted on September 7 and was discharged on September 14. Then on October 1, he was admitted for Febrile Neutrophenia (fever) and was going to be discharged on October 10. He had gone to toilet at 10 pm on October 9 in his room. When he did not come out for more than fifteen minutes, his attendant informed the sister in-charge. After knocking at the door for some time she informed the security officer, who then called the police who broke opened the door and found Kapil hanging by a towel. He was brought out to the bed and was clinically declared dead at 9.30 pm. The police did a panchnama and took the body for postmortem,” hospital sources said.

ihar chief minister Nitish Kumar loses no opportunity to talk about the “huge” development he has brought about in the state.

He narrates how he has undertaken several poverty alleviation schemes, strategies to end unemployment and provide education to all. He also talks about how he has been able to maintain law and order.

The chief minister has still to explain why in spite of Bihar being well-developed lakhs of people migrate to other states. In Mumbai, for instance, there are a large number of people from Bihar. In Jammu and Kashmir, in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also there are many Bihari migrants.

As for law and order situation, the crime rate in Bihar is quite high.

Shocking rape cases are reported from there. Unemployment of a large section of youth has led to violence.

Now that he has ended the alliance with the BJP, it is to be seen how he is going to fare politically.

While in the NDA, he got a good chance to play a big role. He is hurting himself entertaining all the while hostile thoughts against one leader in the BJP – Narendra Modi.

And he is going with a begging bowl to the Centre asking for a special status. The Centre expects him to reciprocate and help it for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. All is not well with Bihar and for this to a great extent Nitish Kumar is responsible.

HE rules of the elections have landed in the eye of a storm much before the process of electioneering for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has begun. The storm is over the Supreme Court ruling, forcing the Election Commission to provide the option of ‘negative vote’ to the electorate. Now the EC is providing an extra button in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) which, after the names of all candidates, provides for a ‘None of the above’ (NOTA) option.

Though this option was available to voters in earlier elections as well, the difference so far is that the NOTA votes were not counted as they were not a part of the ‘Ballot Machine’.

Now that NOTA will be included on the EVM, the numbers of voters who use this option would be easily available and will be public, though, according to the SC ruling, this count would not affect the verdict of the election.

The provision also opens a new chapter of maturity and thoughtfulness, where voters, not going by hollow election promises, threats and negligence, are expected to closely monitor the character, principles and standing of the candidates in particular and their parties in general. If voters are educated to undergo this exercise thoroughly, this system would help the nation to get its ‘able’ lawmakers. Considering that ours is a ‘representative’ parliamentary democracy, the selection of a representative is the moot and most sensitive step that determines the strength of a democracy. Therefore, in theory at least, one must welcome this development.

Having said this, one must also consider the down-side of the forthcoming system.

NOTA count This development, the newest in the history of Indian elections, has stirred up a hornet’s nest in political circles, as the NOTA count will speak volumes about the quality, real popularity and acceptance of all those who are in the fray. This provision of course has an upside and a deep downside. Considering that this system, being a Supreme Court directive, is here to stay, is bound to have both a short-term and a long-term impact on the electoral system and also on the right to franchise. Therefore, it is necessary to weigh this provision, before it comes in to existence.

Yes, the logic says that if a voter has a fundamental and constitutional right to choose his representative, it is natural that he should also have the right to negate all those who are in the fray. Therefore, the NOTA option would enable voters to exercise their right to franchise ‘fully’ in the real sense of the term. This provision would also make the political parties think seriously before putting up their candidates. In a way, it would help in bringing in purity and transparency in the Indian political system.

In today’s context, voters are forced to choose within the given choice and many a time in the absence of the ‘true’ representative candidate, electorates vote for the ‘lesser evil’. But on the other hand, it also directs the EC not to count these votes. This provision beats logic. If NOTA is on the EVM along with list of candidates, and when voters are directed to make a choice between any of the candidate and None Of The Above, it is obvious that the choice of NOTA should also be counted. And if that is allowed, the next moot question is, if the votes polled to NOTA are more than the highest vote seeker in the list, logically NOTA is ‘elected’. In turn, it actually means that no candidate wins and thus the elections are null and void.

It also means that the EC needs to undertake yet another election for that particular constituency within a stipulated period as no

Voting percentage Moreover, even if NOTA is not the highest vote-seeker, the problem remains. The records of Indian elections show that most of the time, the voting percentage does not go beyond 60 per cent. It means nearly 40 per cent of voters do not turn up to the polling booths for various reasons. Therefore, the representative is often ‘elected’ by only half of the voting population or little more. In case the votes are allowed to exercise NOTA, the percentage of votes would come down drastically. It would mean that the mandate of those who would be sitting in the houses of representatives would reduce further. This eventuality would also weaken the notion of representative parliamentary democracy.

The question is where do we want to take the nation? On one side, NOTA is logical but on the other side, its implementation raises more questions than answers and opens the flood-gates for bringing in anarchy in our democratic system. The need of the hour is to educate voters on one hand and to make political parties more responsible on the other.

If political parties field candidates who are worthy of the ticket and do not look at their so-called ‘elective merit’ only, voters would not be forced to press the NOTA button.

For this, it is necessary to educate the voters. How many voters, even in urban constituencies, study election manifestoes of various political parties and the resume of candidates before heading for the ballot booth? The answer is depressing. If such voters exercise the right of NOTA, it would not serve any purpose but to expand the area of chaos in our democracy.

Three artists are coming together to begin their art journey with the aptly titled exhibition, Prarambh. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why you shouldn’t miss it

ead over to catch an exhibition with three artists, three muses and a beautiful collection of canvases. Artists Karishma Wadhwa, Radhika Bawa and Shalu Agarwal are showcasing their work titled Prarambh — An Art Exhibition, all this month.

Each artist has their own muse in the exhibition. Karishma has chosen oil paintings, spirituality and Buddha as the subject for her debut collection. Radhika’s series is based on horses, the horse being the perfect example of dichotomy in nature. Shalu’s collection is centered around lotuses, representing sensitivity and emotion that she identifies with.

Artist, Radhika tells us, “What started as merely a hobby has now grown into a passion. Art is what brought the three of us together and Prarambh, hopefully is only the beginning of our journey as artists.” Head over to see which collection you identify with most.

Ratan Krishna Saha, the well-known artist from Kolkata has been sculpting for over 20 years and has several solo as well as group shows in India and abroad to his credit. Ratan is eclectic in his sculptural approach as he imbibes inspiration from various modernist sculptural styles and incorporates them for his purpose. His latest collection of artwork, titled Journey with the Bull, is an exhibition themed on tales of the bull, where each one has its own story, its own identity and every bull indicates a different character such as the Divine Touch, Urban Net, Desperation, Enlightened, Devotee, Power, Monk and Recycled. There are 18 artworks and a 15 feet installation comprising of more than 150 Nandi Bulls. Ratan says, “I have always been fascinated by the bull and the power it represents, which influenced me at different points in my life. As a sculptor I like the ‘form’ of the bull as it is a symbol of life force.”

This workshop is a great place to get started. The 15th Mumbai Film Festival is finally here and in association with Equinox Europe, they’re conducting a two-day workshop this month in Andheri. The workshop will be conducted by the Chair of the Melbourne International Film Festival along with eminent script advisor, Claire Dobbin and producer and screenwriter James Hart.

While Claire has been a guest lecturer at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and senior script executive at the Australian Film Commission, Hart has written and produced Hook, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Muppet Treasure Island, Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.

Activities include listening to pitches, giving your own and getting feedback.

There’s a lunch break in between and sessions will discuss themes, concept lines, structure and characters, along with a question hour to air doubts. On the second day, you can watch a screening of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with a deconstruction of the script. You can pitch ideas at the end again.

Srinivasan Narayana, festival director, Mumbai Film Festival says, “There is a need to groom and hone skills, learnt as well as inherent, to ensure excellence. This is true for script writing and pitching as well. James V Hart and Claire Dobbin are masters in this field. At this workshop, they will share their knowledge and experiences with young script writers and participants. We are developing Mumbai Film Festival as a platform for knowledge sharing, networking and celebrating cinema as a whole.”

« WATCH: HORIZONS BBC’s Horizons Comes to IndIa BBC is now airing the third season of its show Horizons. The first episode, which will air this weekend, focuses on food wastage and the show comes to India to discover some of the revolutionary methods that India has introduced to curb food wastage.

India, which is the second largest food producer in the world, has a shocking 30% food wastage rate!

The show will feature scientist Dr. H M Chawla from IIT Delhi, who

has invented FRU WAS, a bio degradable emulsion that increases the shelf life of fruits by 3-4 times. The emulsion partially clogs the pores of the fruit, slowing the perspiration process which in return slows down the ripening process, giving it enough time to reach market shelves.

Another part of the episode will see the show in Rome, at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Association headquarters as well as

the Netherlands, where the show will showcase a cold chain monitoring system where food is monitored using micro chips to understand and control the transport cycle.

The show has an interesting premise and is certainly a must-watch.

Ping Pong is here!

R

egular globe trotters were extremely excited about dim sum experts Ping Pong opening in India at Bandra Kurla Complex. While we did hear a lot of hushed whispers about the restaurant serving food that uses frozen ingredients, we prevented this from colouring our opinions and went there with a blank slate. Before we elaborate further, you’ll see four Chinese expressions carved on Ping Pong’s ceiling. They call these terms the essence of the restaurant.

So, we decided to break down our review and tell you how they fared in each.

Love at first sight: Ping Pong’s decor is largely standard worldwide — massive, with a bar section right across the entrance, dark hued wooden seating arrangement with Chinese lanterns lighting up the place. Love at first sight? Not really, but the decor is warm enough to make you feel comfortable.

Extravagant: While Ping Pong is extravagant, it will not intimidate you. This holds true.

Basically, you don’t have to think about what you are wearing before you enter. There were ladies entering in evening gowns and also professionals like us who didn’t have the time to look in the mirror after they left home. Even their staff is dressed in unassuming t-shirts and jeans.

Straight to the point: By this, I think they were talking about their speedy service as Ping Pong is known for their quick meals. However, we opted to try their elaborate meal and started with a Vegetarian Wanton Soup, which came with a vegetable wanton dunked in a yummy, tart broth (`220). We then ordered the Vegetarian Spring Roll (`250 for three pieces), which was like any other spring roll that we’ve had, and the Vietnamese Rice Paper Prawn Roll (`350 for three pieces) which again, was nothing surprising. concoctions on the menu and edamame beans from their nibbles section.

Opportunity comes but once: First impressions are important. While our experience was good, we were looking for some items that would really stand out. And, just to clear the air, we were told that they only import the items that are not available locally.

They have very limited options for dessert and we tasted the Molten Cake which was like choco lava cake (`220) and Chinese Fluffy Ginger Cake (`220), which is a star item on their dessert menu. e picked up the Ragi-Meal and Broken Wheat -Meal from MonaVie’s One Heat & Eat range. 100% natural and vegetarian, each 500g box comes with two 250g foil sachets inside which you can heat up in a frying pan, microwave or by immersing in boiling water (or as one motorcyclist suggested, on a hot tank) all ready to eat in 3-5 minutes. Both meals are trans-fat, preservative free; MSG and artificial colour free and honestly, they don’t really need any of it. The Ragi-Meal is also gluten free and has chick peas and soy beans. If you are a fan of ragi you will like this. If you aren’t a fan of ragi… you may be pleasantly surprised. It tastes exactly as you would imagine it would — homely, warming, filling and nutritious.

The Broken Wheat- Meal comes mixed with moong dal and rajma and is quite delicious in a comfort food kind of way.

Texture is strictly okay and flavour-wise, both are gently spiced which for some, may border on the bland side. So, if you like your meals with a little more fight, some pickle on the side would add just the right punch. While a recommended serving size says each sachet serves two, if you making a meal of it, a sachet would just about do for one. Using technology developed by the Defence Food Research Lab Ministry of Defence, Mysore, these are ideal for long treks, camping trips and the like as they are easy to pack and not fussy to eat. Considering the ingredients, the price between,`300-320 is a bit high, especially for the quantity.

The Table has launched a special ‘Kids Sunday Brunch’ for children up to the age of 12 years at `650 plus taxes and service charge. Dev Goswami revisits his childhood with a trip to the newly opened Lego Zone by Funskool at Hamleys. He tells you what’s in store

ego… the word brings back a lot of memories. The countless hours spent building with colourful blocks, fighting with friends over the last block needed to complete your masterpiece… all these memories came rushing back to me when I heard that Funskool has set up a Lego Zone at Hamleys in High Street Phoenix.

Having lost touch with the toy, I was excited to see what Lego in the 21st century was all about. The well-decorated Lego Zone is a treat for children (and adults!). Boxes of different collections of Lego line the walls while there are glass covered table tops that display fully constructed Lego models such as a fire station, police station and themebased figures inspired from cartoons and popular movies.

Of all the constructed models that were on display, the fire trains, house sets and scenic sets such as a tea party set and station and the Transformers inspired figures caught my a romantic boat ride. They also have a fantastic range of Star attention. With their intricate and seemingly complex Wars inspired merchandise, including tiny light sabers and designs, they are a far cry from the Lego that I grew up with. weapons for the starships!

It’s no wonder that there’s a section of the zone that’s meant A few other collections also caught my attention. First only for the ages 16 and above. The collection features amongst these was the Architecture range. It is meant for complex constructions to build planes, helicopters slightly older children (ages 12 and above) and features and trains. popular, real-world monuments such as the White House, But, that doesn’t mean that Lego doesn’t have anything Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, the Burj for children. A majority of the store is dedicated to Lego Khalifa and such. It’s a good way for children to learn about collection that includes vehicles such as cars, trucks and famous architecture while having fun.

Another one I quite liked… and umm… felt like buying, was a complex robot model. Not only is it a three-foot tall robot that you can make out of Lego, it is computerised and actually functions as a robot! This is a part of their complex range meant for ages 16 and above.

So, what are my final thoughts on the Lego Zone at Hamleys? It is a well-designed section that is primarily aimed at kids. They will refresh their collection every time the brand launches something new. The prices range from `1,500 to `7,000 for most of the products. However, they do have collections that cost more than that, such as the robot which is priced at `37,499. The zone is a must-visit for all Lego fans out there... no matter how old you are.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (October 10, 2013) a net 13.50 points (0.22%) and closed at the 6020 point level. The market opened down at the 6001 points level. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 10.52 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5979 points level at 11.00 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6020 points level at 1.22 p.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session and moved in a range of 54 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 29 were gainers, 20 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Buying was seen in auto, metal, IT, healthcare, power, realty, and technology stocks, while selling was seen in banking, oil & gas and FMCG stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 13.78%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 754 were gainers, 557 were losers and 107 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone.

The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5692 points level.

Further, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages, and all the four moving averages are rising and also posi tively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 5912 point’s level.

p until a few years ago, The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) qualification could only be completed by going to the UK and securing articles with a CA firm there.

However, due to the MOU signed with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), it is possible for Indian CAs to additionally gain ICAEW by completing three integrated papers.

This opens up two new avenues to ICAl members: ICAEW’s global recognition gives members many opportunities to work across the globe and it also gives an additional set of integrated skills that help Indian companies gain a global perspective, which tangibly accelerates growth. This is reflected in the fact that 95% of the FTSE 100 companies have a CA on the board and greater than 50 of the FTSE 100 have a CA as CFO. With India needing increased growth from all sectors, these newly minted ICAI-ICAEW members are set to catapult business with their new skills. It will also provide opportunity to these Indian graduates to be employed in the UK and Europe and a few of our first batch have already gone to the UK to work. It was an emotionally overwhelming moralebooster for me especially since I received the esteemed award instituted by Bharat and Dorris from my Boss, superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Generally its dress-designers who are invariably grabbing the lime-light. Makeup men rarely get recognition for their valuable work. In my acceptance speech, I shared the credit entirely with Amit-ji. It is because I have this prerogative of handling his facial makeup, for the past four decades, that I am recognised and respected everywhere. Never have I taken leave while Amit-ji is required to face the camera. Whenever he is ‘not’ shooting, by default I get my ‘holidays’.

Even after having turned a Bhojpuri movie’s superhit ‘showman’ producer, you continue to handle ‘make-up’ for your own productions?

Guess am the only successful producer-cummake-up ‘dada’ in Bollywood who has to make up his mind too (laughs). Since Amitabh-ji has been the supreme casting coup in my Bhojpuri movies, I had to handle his ‘make-up’ as well.

Initially, Bachchan-saab was skeptical about making his Bhojpuri debut. But once he went through the script and was convinced, he was co-operation personified. The entire Bachchan parivaar including Jaya-ji, Abhishek-ji and Aishwarya-ji treat me like their family member.

Their bonding and apnaapan is among the major reasons behind my dedicated commitment to them. On Amit-ji’s 71st birthday today, I wish him a long, healthy, active glorious life ahead. Even in my aagle janam, I should be working with Amit-ji as my benevolent Boss, is what I what I always pray. We are planning to release, in the near future, a biographical DVD

album on AB-Sir’s illustrious life and times.

To what extent does facial make-up play a role in adding credence to the screen-characters, as in Amitabh’s case?

Actually it is supposed to be 25 per cent, but I feel it’s much more. During close-up shots, the visual impact of the scene-wise facial makeup is maximum. Take the ideal instance of Amitabh as the dockyard ‘coolie’ and then his overnight transformation to a debonair suave underworld don in Deewar. Almost every movie of the versatile super-actor Big B offers me a creative challenge. Be it Khuda Gawah, Black or Paa or the recent Satyagraha where with his 60-plus-aged look, many felt he reminded them of an on-screen alag avataar of Anna Hazare. Now as the ongoing KBC’s charismatic host, he looks dashing, rejuvenated and in his early 50s with the bright cosmetic touch-ups. This I guess is the sheer magic of make-up.

It was in 1973 that Prakash Mehra, after being rejected by the top actors of that time like Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar, etc. went to Amitabh Bachchan and offered him the role of Inspector Vijay for the film Zanjeer. This revenge saga came like a blast of fresh air in the midst of the popular romantic films and established Amitabh as the ‘Angry Young Man’.

It has been 40 years since the film released and Amitabh has not looked back since then and is still a force to reckon with. In the ensuing period he gave film lovers great hits like Don, Trishul, Sholay, Majboor, Mr. Natwarlal, Naseeb, Coolie, Don, The Great Gambler, etc. Though some of his films may not have done well, Amitabh has

never failed as an actor.

With Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gam Amitabh was freed from the shackles of playing the lead actor. He took on different shades of characters in movies like Paheli, Viruddh, Nishabd, but it was Sanjay Leela Bhansali who gave him a complex character in Black. The nuances of the character were brought out well by Amitabh that it turned out to be an award winning performance. He was also appreciated in films like Cheeni Kum (2007) and Paa (2009). Recently he regaled his fans with superlative performances in Buddha Hoga Tera Baap, and Satyagrah despite the films having mundane scripts.

The hallmark of this actor lies in his consistency of churning out one great performance after another.

Reams and Reams can be written about Amitabh but it would still not do justice to the man’s talent and humility.

Dia happy to don producer’s mantle for Bobby Jasoos A

ctress-turned-producer Dia Mirza says she has no qualms about not being the leading lady in her production venture Bobby Jasoos and is happy being behind the camera.

In her ambitious second production Bobby Jasoos, Vidya Balan plays the lead role. Dia coowns production banner Born Free Entertainment with beau Sahil Sangha. Their first film was Love Breakups Zindagi in 2011.

“I am not selfish. I don’t know why I am not doing this film. All I know is that I want to make this film, I don’t want to see myself on screen to know that it is my film. This is my baby and I want to nurture. I did not set up Born Free because I wanted to see myself in films. I want to take my aspirations to another level”, Dia

said in an interview to PTI. “When you are an actor you are a small part of it, but when you are a producer you expand your horizons, go beyond the limitations. As an actor you do not have that much control but you can do a lot as a producer”, she said.

When asked if she loves being

behind the camera now, she says, “I love being in front of the camera but I love the fact that I have more control as a producer.

My passion is cinema and to translate the passion this way, it feels good”.

Direction seems to be the next step for Dia. “Yes, for sure (I will direct). But I don’t know when, maybe when I have a story I want to tell, I will direct”, she said.

She could only think of Vidya Balan for this film. Though Vidya takes some time to give her nod for a project, to Dia’s surprise, she agreed for this project in a month. “When we took the script to her we were sure she would like the film. Vidya is a very strong and big component in the nurturing process. We are not making this film to shock anyone”.

Shiv Pandit who was noticed in Shaitaan is now in the big league with the Akshay Kumar starrer Boss. Here is a brief interview held in the director’s office. Some excerpts.

What is your character in the film?

The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit Pookiri Raja and I am essaying the same role that Prithviraj did in the original of a young lover boy named Shiv who is in love with the character played

by Aditi Rao Hydari and because of this my elder brother Boss played by Akshay Kumar and father played by Mithun Chakravarthy are in a conflict.

Tell us something about your background.

My father was a government servant with a transferable job and I had to

school in various places like Karnataka, Delhi and Chandigarh. When I came to Mumbai I got a job as a disc jockey in Radio Mirchi which I pursued for two years, did a few commercials, later did TV shows like FIR and then anchored IPL cricket series and then I did Shaitaan which got me Boss in a lead romantic role.

Do you share a similar relationship with your father?

My father was in the Central Government and supported me a lot and I am thankful to have a father like him. In fact the character played by Mithun

Chakravarthy is similar to my father.

How was it like working with big stars like Akshay Kumar, Danny Dengzongpa, and Mithun Chakravarthy?

They are not at all serious as they look on screen but are easygoing and full of fun. Akshay is an easy going person on the sets but in front of the camera he becomes very serious. Mithun Sir and Danny Sir are fit though their age is past 60 and they seem like young men. I learnt a lot from them on how to act before the camera. I also learnt the importance of exercise from Akshay Kumar when I visited his gym and he gave me useful tips.

And your co-star Aditi Rao Hydari?

I got along very well with her and our chemistry is good on screen as in personal lives.

Aditi is a good dancer?

Yes. Unfortunately I don’t have a dance number with her but just a background song.

Rekha Turns 59 B

ollywood’s mysterious beauty Rekha turns 59 today but don’t let her age fool you, as she can still give girls half her age a run for their money. Rekha was born in Chennai to Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli on October 10, 1954.

Since she was born out of the wedlock her father did not acknowledge his paternity during her childhood.

EW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today asked Badminton Association of India (BAI) to allow ace Indian shuttler Jwala Gutta to participate in upcoming tournaments till the disciplinary authority takes a final decision on the issue of her alleged indiscipline. Justice V K Jain allowed Gutta’s plea and said, “I am of the view that you (BAI) must allow her to play in the tournament”. However, the court said a detailed order will be passed on her plea later in the day. The court also observed that till the final view is taken by the committee, she should be allowed to take part in the tournament. The two upcoming badminton tournaments in which Gutta was to participate are Denmark Open scheduled from October 15 to 20 and French Open from October 22 to 27.

UMBAI: The script was in the making and the stage was being set for months together. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is finally all set to take his gloves off after the 200th Test match which will be played against West Indies most probably on his home turf – the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Tendulkar, 40, shared the limelight in 1988 for the first time with his childhood buddy Vinod Kambli with a magnificent 664 run partnership contributing 326 runs for his school Shardasharam. The partnership which was a world record for the callow 14-year-old boy stood the test of time for 18 years. Tendulkar who announced his retirement on Thursday had earlier called it quits in the one-day international format on December 23, 2012, and had announced that this year’s Indian Premier League and the Champions League would be his last venture with the Mumbai Indians. He had played a lone T20 against South Africa and then decided against playing in order to give opportunities to the younger lot.

The master craftsman with over 50,000 runs to his credit in all forms of the game was emotional when he contacted the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s president N Srini-

EW DELHI: He was a member of the national selection panel that picked 16-yearold prodigy called Sachin Tendulkar for the tour of Pakistan in 1989 and to this day, 73-year-old Akash Lal remembers every minute detail of that meeting that changed the course of Indian cricket history.

"It may be nearly 25 years since that selection meeting in Mumbai but I still remember it wasn't an unanimous decision. Ultimately, it went in favour of Sachin by 3-2 verdict and he was selected in the Indian team," Lal, who played 94 first-class matches for Delhi and Punjab in between 1957-1976, told PTI. The five-member committee that selected Tendulkar comprised chairman of selection committee Raj Singh Dungarpur, Akash Lal, Ramesh Saxena, Gundappa Viswanath and Naren Tamhane.

YDNEY: The decision-review technology known as Hot Spot has been dumped just weeks before Australia’s Ashes series against England, reports said.

The controversial infrared camera system has been dropped by the host broadcaster due to costs, Hot Spot’s Australian inventor Warren Brennan told Fairfax Media. The decision-review device, which uses heat sensors and infrared cameras to detect contact between the ball, bat and pads, will now not feature in the showpiece five-Test series, beginning at Brisbane’s Gabba ground on November 21.

“It’s their decision and that’s what’s been communicated to us.

As far as I’m concerned, it is final,” Brennan said.

“We’re just moving on with things. Channel Nine have got a new deal with Cricket Australia which I know has cost them a lot more money.
