MERE SHOW OF STRENGTH AS MNS LEADER WISHES TO SPARE HSC STUDENTS WHO ARE SITTING FOR PRELIMS FROM HIS TOLL TAMASHA TODAY

Handicapping the handicapped Report on pg 3

Handicapped students will have to travel long distances to appear for board exams, as they have been allocated exam centres far away from their residences

andicapped students appearing for their Higher School Certificate (HSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams have found themselves in a mess after the state board has decided to assign them examination centres that are located far away from their residences. This will mean that they will have to spend hours travelling across the city to appear for their board exams. Since the syllabus of handicapped students consists of subjects that are different from the ones studied in most regular schools, the board has assigned these students exam centers which are located in the heart of Mumbai. While this might seem convenient, handicapped students living in the distant suburbs will have to travel for hours to appear for their exams. Manish Singh, the parent of a handicapped child, says, “My child has polio and cannot travel long distances. It is difficult for a handicapped student to travel for hours and then appear for his or her exams. The state board should allocate exam centers which are nearest to the residences of handicapped students. Last year, students, including the handicapped from Borivli and Thane, had to carry their own typewriters for the type-writing exam at Dadar, which proved to be very inconvenient and tiresome for them. The ADC spoke to Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Mumbai Division, who said, "The syllabus of handicapped students is different from the ones taught in most schools. Those schools or centres which have the facility for the subjects opted for by handicapped students have been declared as exam centers. The board understands the travelling difficulties faced by the students and thus we have allotted exam centers which are in the heart of the city, thus making it as easy as possible for students to travel."

nticipating major backlash from the people over toll collection across the state, the NCP yesterday openly demanded to cancel the toll collection on single lane road. At the same time Anant Gadgil, the spokesperson and the member of national media panel of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has requested the Chief Minister to intervene in the toll mess. Both the Congress and NCP are virtually shaken up by the resentment among the people over the issue of toll collection. To avoid major public outburst in the run up of the forthcoming Lok Sabha election, NCP who is at receiving end for toll collection in the state took an U-turn. Speaking to reporters, the state NCP president Bhaskar Jadhav said, “I have written a letter to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to abolish toll on single lane road in the state. If the government takes this decision then people will get major relief”. He also appealed to the youth to Extra police personnel have been deployed at toll nakas across the city and state.

he Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other central security agencies will be deployed by the Mumbai Police today to tackle any untoward incident after the Maharasthra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, stated that there will be no vandalism but there will be force. To pre-empt any untoward situation, the airport operator, GVK Infrastructure, shut its toll booths at both the international and domestic airports, after demand were made by cadres of the Maharasthra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) and their vice-president Akhil Anil Chitre. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone VIII, Namdev Chavan, said, “We have tightened security at all prominent places in our jurisdiction, particularly at the airports and the Western Express Highway. concentrate on their career and not to join Raj Thackery’s anti-toll agitation. On the other hand, Congress’ Anant Gadgil has also sent a letter to the CM. In his letter, Gadgil has said that people are upset with the toll collection done on various roads in the state. This anger has now come to the fore which is going to tarnish the image of the government. So now, time has come to take a call on this sensitive matter, Gadgil has pointed out. Meanwhile, Home Minister R.R. Patil has reiterated that nobody should take law into their hands. Whosoever tries to play with law and order situation will be dealt with an iron hand, he said.

The state will use its Rapid Action Force to counter Raj Thackeray’s men if things get out of hand stationed across Chembur, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.” Akhil Chitre said, “From Tuesday afternoon, both airports stopped collecting toll because no other airport across India, except Mumbai, charges people for staying longer than five minutes while receiving or seeing off their guests.” “They charge Rs. 110 if a person stays for more than five minutes, which is exorbitant. This is a mild form of extortion and we will not tolerate it. We have filed an NC which is pending. We demand a complete toll bandh at both airports, and if our demands are not fulfilled, we will take it further,” added Chitre.

n Tuesday, the staff at the BMC-run peripheral hospital V.N. Desai at Santacruz protested against the lack of action taken against a timekeeper, who has been accused of harassing the staff at the hospital and allegedly passing an inappropriate comment against a Class IV lady employee, a month ago. After having waited for a month for the transfer of the accused, when the staff found that no action was taken, they decided to voice their anger by staging a protest. “He has been harassing the staff by not marking their attendance and being rude. He was also accused of speaking badly to a lady staff of the hospital. All of us are tired of this behaviour and had asked the hospital authorities to take some action against him. Every time we asked, we were told that he will soon be transferred, but nothing has happened as yet,” said a member of the staff from the hospital. Dr. V.K. Sane, the medical superintendent of the hospital remained unavailable for comment.

he much awaited, Rs. 400 crore, 2.2 km long, signal-free Sahar Elevated Road (SER) will be thrown open to the public on Wednesday, by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. This coincides with the new T2 terminal of the Sahar International Airport becoming operational. The SER will connect the terminal with the Western Express Highway thus reducing the entry and exit time to just five minutes. An approach road of 262 meters to the

98 meter long underpass from the Western Express Highway makes this project unique. The elevated road with three lanes in either direction without any signals in between, will help decongest the roads and junctions in and around Andheri East and on the Western Express Highway, leading to the international airport. The SER has been constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) with financial assistance from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

M

aharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray in his rally in Pune on Sunday called for a transport bandh in Maharashtra protesting against the collection of road tolls in the state and alleging that they were being used by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as an election-fund. The bandh has led to fear among the BEST community as thousands of passengers use these buses to travel across Mumbai and the suburbs while crossing several toll naka. BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said, “The bus services will be functional on Wednesday but will end their journeys before reaching a toll naka”. Gupta added, “On Monday night, the Uran toll naka was vandalised and that has created fear among the public and thus the BEST has taken this decision, considering the safety of its passengers”.

aj in his rally had said that the state is collecting over Rs.22,000 crore through road tax levied on vehicles sold in the state and a similar amount through fuel cess and other taxes which are needed for construction of new roads and bridges and are hardly utilised for the same. There is no option but to launch an agitation against the collection of toll, he claimed.

buses from February 15, was made by the BEST committee yesterday, leaving activists and the public fuming. BEST is already suffering losses and the proposal has been passed, as Shiv Sena corporator Arun Dudwadkar who is also a BEST committee member had raised this issue on June 4, 2013.

The BEST authority since March 17, 1950 has permitted the corporators to use the nonAC BEST buses in the city free of cost but the corporators now demand the same for the AC buses. General Manager, BEST, Om Prakash Gupta confirmed the news. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

These buses will stop well before they reach a toll naka. Talking about the loss which the BEST will have to face owing to the bandh, he added, “BEST will face a major loss in its income. The BMC has passed a provision of allotting us Rs.100 crore, a call on which will be taken

in the standing committee meeting and then the house. We will use this amount as long as we can and may then increase the tariff accordingly”. khushboo.panjabi@ afternoondc.in

week-long investigation of Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his associate by the state Anti-Terrorism Sqaud (ATS) revealed that the 2011 Indian Premier League (IPL) was also their target but had to drop the plan due to heavy security. Arrested terrorist Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi has revealed that they had done a recce of the Wankhede Stadium twice before the Mumbai Indians versus Pune Warriors match in 2011. According to ATS sources, after the 13/7 blast, Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah travelled to Kasara, Nashik by train and then went off to Bihar. Asadullah and Waqas Ahmad had come to Mumbai in 2010 and drew their plans right here in the city, in a rented apartment in South Mumbai. Bhatkal also wanted to target foreign tourists but failed to so due to lack of co-ordination between him and his colleagues, sources said. While speaking of the Delhi Batla encounter case, Asadullah said that he was present at the spot when the encounter was took place but managed to flee the spot and reach Dubai via Bangladesh and later Karachi, sources added. Bhatkal has reportedly undergone terrorist training in Pakistan in 2005-06. Him and Asadullah will stay in the custody of ATS till February 18.

leuths of the Bhayandar police along with their counterparts in the AntiHuman Trafficking unit of the Thane (rural) police have reportedly busted a high profile sex racket on Monday evening. While two notorious pimps have been arrested, three women (aged between 22 to 26 years) including the wife of one of the accused were rescued by the police team. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Senior PI, Arvind Choudhary and API, Atul Aher, established contact and struck a deal with the pimps through a decoy customer, following which a trap was laid near Maxus Mall in Bhayandar (West) at about 4:30 pm on Monday. “We planted a decoy customer who was told by the accused that he would have to pay Rs.23,000 for three girls. Our decoy agreed to the deal. Subsequently a trap was laid and the accused

Loharia’s murder in February 2013. However, the prosecution had informed the court in the earlier hearing that the statements of police officers were yet to be recorded and that steps were being taken to declare absconding accused as proclaimed offenders and attach

their properties, so as to compel them to appear before the trial court. Tirodkar had also alleged, “The rival builder, Suresh Bijlani and architect Anurag Garg, both accused in the case, were spotted by Loharia’s son in the police station where he had gone to lodge a complaint. Bijlani has since been arrested while Garg is still absconding. A senior police inspector had also refused to name these two accused in the FIR. Investigations in this case were earlier being made by Navi Mumbai police. However later, it was handed over to Mumbai Crime Branch.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

07 CITY NO RAGE ANY MORE Police reduces dacoity charges against 5 youths who bashed businessman up, after complainant turns hostile By Zuber Ansari

A

fter almost one week, the Kherwadi police have reduced the ‘Dacoity’ charges filed against the five accused who were arrested by Crime Branch Unit VIII for allegedly bashing up a Malad based businessman over a minor issue on Western Express Highway, on the night of last Wednesday, February 5. After a complaint was filed by businessman Binodkumar Tekriwal, the Vakola Police had registered an assaulting and dacoity case against five persons and the FIR was later transferred to the Kherwadi police station. But after a week, when the Kherwadi police called up the businessman to record his statement, he shockingly revealed that nothing which he had earlier mentioned in his FIR to the Vakola police had ever happened. Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone VIII, Namdev Chavan, said, “We had reduced the charges and recorded a fresh statement of all the accused and the victim. All were produced before the court and the ac-

cused were released on bail. The complainant said that he does not remember what exactly happened with him on the day of incident, and does not know where he lost his gold chain.” The Crime Branch Unit 8 of the Mumbai police had Mohammad Alam Nafeed Amid (34), Mubin Sheikh alias Shahrukh, (24), Imran Ali Amjad Ali Sheikh (25), Israr Kallu Khan (24) and Irshadali Barkatali Siddique (24). They were passing by in their i10 while the complainant Binodkumar Tekriwal (60) was driving his Maruti Swift car. According to police reports, Tekriwal’s Swift hit the car in which the accused were travelling, following which they chased him down and assaulted him. All the accused then demanded money for the damage and threatened to harm him. Tekriwal somehow managed to free himself and went straight to Vakola police station to file his complaint. He had taken car’s number and found his gold chain, which he was wearing, was missing. On that basis, he lodged a dacoity case which has now turned out to be false.

Proposal to shift dumping project gets entangled in political tug-of-war

n what is being seen as major setback for villagers in and around Uttan, seeking freedom from unbearable stench emanating from the local solid waste process plant, the resolution moved by the civic administration for shifting the plant to Vasai, failed to get a nod after the general body house was adjourned due to time restrain. The resolution moved by NCP’s Dhruvkishore Patil, affirming the nod of the house in context with the shifting of the waste process plant from Dhavgi in Uttan to Sakvar village near Vasai, was countered by the BJP-led opposition. On the virtue of their numerical strength in the house, BJP leader Narendra Mehta moved a counter resolution seeking prior nod from all government agencies and assured affirmation from local villagers where the MBMC intended to set up the plant. After much deliberation the opposition agreed to remove the controversial points but refused to withdraw the resolution.

The malodorous Uttan dumping ground The extended rounds of debate led to the clock striking 7 pm, prompting MBMC secretary Haresh Patil to end the meeting which was later declared adjourned by the Mayor. The BJP’s move is being seen as a political ploy to counter NCP legislator Gilbert Mendonca’s efforts to shift the plant ahead of the assembly elections. Unable to bear the stink, locals had been demanding an immediate shift of the Dhavgibased plant which has already exceeded its existing capacity, posing a tough challenge for the MBMC to seek new avenues of dumping and treating garbage. Environmental safeguards and approvals under the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, for the waste management

facility at a 13-hectare plot in Sakvar village have been obtained by the MBMC. As of now the twin-city generates about 450 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis. However given the quantum of solid waste generated, the holding capacity of the plant is now inadequate, prompting the MBMC to seek an alternative. Moreover going by its faulty geographic location and adverse environmental impact, there was virtually no scope for upgrading the process plant, officials said. Also villagers staying in the vicinity of the plant had been facing numerous problems due to the stench emanating from the plant, which had also led to violent agitations in the past.

Despite the fact that the mega-housing project entitles the MBMC to a grant of 50 per cent from the centre and 30 per cent from the state, according to the JNNURM guidelines, the cost escalation caused by an unprecedented delay in the completion of projects, has to be borne by the executing authority – in this case, the MBMC. However, despite tenders being awarded by the Public Works Department to four different companies in March 2010, the project has been bogged down due to a lack of political will and land acquisition issues related to the various government agencies, including the Forest, Revenue and Home Department.

Telangana bill: Can it be passed? T

he Congress-led UPA government seems to be quite certain it will be able to pass the Telangana bill in parliament. It is facing quite a few hurdles but it seems to be sure it can cross them all. The bill would have been introduced three years ago, but this could not be done because there was continuing ruckus in the house – caused mainly by Andhra MPs. The Congress MPs from Seemandhra also wanted to move a no-confidence motion against the government. Six Andhra MPs were expelled. The pertinent question is how the government will be able to muster a majority for passing the Telangana bill. The government appears to be relaying on the opposition – BJP – to extend cooperation to it in passing the bill. What is to be noted is that opinion is divided with regard to support to the bill in the Congress party itself. There are quite a few Congress MPs who want Andhra to remain united. The Congress party will issue a whip and ensure that all votes go to support the Telangana bill. The Congress is hellbent on creating Telangana because it expects to get quite a few seats from there in the Lok Sabha elections. The situation with regard to division of Andhra is more evident in the case of the BJP which does not expect any gain from supporting the Telangana bill. The UPA government is reported to have taken a decision to introduce the Telangana bill in the Lok Sabha tomorrow. There surely is going to be fireworks in the house. It is to be seen how the government will fare when the bill comes up in the house. A greater cause for concern for the UPA is what will be the fate of money bills which finance minister Chidambaram will present to the house in the next few days. Even if the Telangana bill fails, the government can continue, but if just one more bill is not passed, the government will fall.

T

he Congress and the BJP have erected enough of a smokescreen to confuse political circles about their intentions on the creation of Telengana. But according to knowledgeable circles, the two have hammered out an understanding in private to facilitate passage of the bill dividing Andhra Pradesh. If events move to plan, the bill will come up for passage in the penultimate days of the 15th Lok Sabha, that is, next week after the vote on account is cleared. In return for the BJP’s help to get the bill through, sources say the Congress has agreed to sacrifice Rahul Gandhi’s anti-corruption agenda and dump the six bills he had flagged as part of the gamut of measures to fight graft. Whether the agreement will hold till next week or not remains to be seen. In the meantime, the Telengana bill has fallen victim to amazing incompetence on the part of Congress managers. They are behaving like novices who don’t know their Constitution or basic parliamentary rules. In fact, internal discussions on the bill saw differences erupt between legal eagles Kapil Sibal and P. Chidambaram who could not agree whether the bill should go to the Lok Sabha first or the Rajya Sabha. Even if these internecine battles are sorted out and the bill is finally passed in the din just before the Lok Sabha adjourns sine die for the election, the fall guy will be Rahul. For Telengana will have been created at the expense of his poll plank.

winnable seat. And his search has taken him to West Bengal in the wake of his party’s rapidly declining graph in Uttar Pradesh from where he had won the Moradabad seat with a handsome margin in the 2009 polls. According to Congress circles, two seats are being considered for Azharuddin. One is President Pranab Mukherjee’s former con-

although his narrow victory margin in the bypolls after his father was elected to Rashtrapati Bhavan is a sign that the constituency is no longer safe for the Congress. Basirhat figures as an option only because the Trinamool Congress did not fare well in the recent panchayat polls. Consequently, Chowdhury believes the party has a fighting chance there. Azharuddin has conveyed to the high command that he does not want to seek re-election from Moradabad. He probably knows he is on a losing wicket there, having failed to do anything for the constituency. He is also believed to have said that he will campaign for the Congress only if he gets a winnable seat or is adjusted in the Rajya Sabha. It looks like there’s a rush for Rajya Sabha berths in the Congress because of fears that the party will take a huge hit in the upcoming election. Unfortunately, the party’s ability to accommodate the growing demand is limited because it is failing to win even state elections!

Arati R. Jerath stituency of Jangipur, currently represented by his son Abhijit Mukherjee. The other is Basirhat, a Muslim-dominated seat near Kolkata. The moving force behind getting Azharuddin to Bengal is said to be newly appointed state unit chief Adhir Chowdhury who is also minister of state for railways. His argument is that Bengal with a Muslim population of 30 per cent is fertile ground for Azharuddin who is something of an icon in the community. Predictably, Abhijit Mukherjee is up in arms at the proposal to strip him of his seat

piquant situation arose when a Senate delegation from Mexico came calling recently. All the members were women but our Rajya Sabha managed to rustle up only male MPs to meet with them. Apparently, the interaction was somewhat awkward. It was Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien who managed to break the ice. He told the Mexican delegates not to be misled by the all-male presence on the Indian side. At least three of the six MPs present belonged to parties led by women, he said: he himself, the Congress representative and the AIADMK MP.

Truth is a pathless land T

he Order of the Star in the East was founded in 1911 to proclaim the coming of the World Teacher. J. Krishnamurti was made Head of the Order. On August 3, 1929, the opening day of the annual Star Camp at Ommen, Holland, Krishnamurti dissolved the Order before 3000 members. Below is the full text of the talk he gave on that occasion.“We are going to discuss this morning the dissolution of the Order of the Star. Many people will be delighted, and others will be rather sad. It is a question neither for rejoicing nor for sadness, because it is inevitable, as I am going to explain. “You may remember the story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street, when they saw ahead of them a man stoop down and pick up something from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, “What did that man pick up?” “He picked up a piece of Truth,” said the devil. “That is a very bad business for you, then,” said his friend. “Oh, not at all,” the devil replied, “I am going to let him organise it." I maintain that Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organised; nor should any organization be formed to lead or to coerce people along any particular path. If you first understand that, then you will see how impossible it is to organize a belief. A belief is purely an individual matter, and you cannot and must not organise it. If you do, it becomes dead, crystallized; it becomes a creed, a sect, a religion, to be imposed on others.

This is what everyone throughout the world is attempting to do. Truth is narrowed down and made a plaything for those who are weak, for those who are only momentarily discontented. Truth cannot be brought down, rather the individual must make the effort to ascend to it. You cannot bring the mountain-top to the valley. If you would attain to the mountain-top you must pass through the valley, climb the steeps, unafraid of the dangerous precipices. So that is the first reason, from my

MATTER & SPIRIT point of view, why the Order of the Star should be dissolved. In spite of this, you will probably form other Orders, you will continue to belong to other organizations searching for Truth. I do not want to belong to any organization of a spiritual kind, please understand this. I would make use of an organization which would take me to London, for example; this is quite a different kind of organization, merely mechanical, like the post or the telegraph. I would use a motor car or a steamship to travel, these are only physical mechanisms which have nothing whatever to do with spirituality. Again, I maintain that no organization can lead man to spirituality. If an organization be created for this purpose, it becomes a crutch, a weakness, a bondage, and must cripple the individual, and prevent him from growing, from establishing his uniqueness, which lies in the discovery for himself of that absolute, unconditioned Truth. So that is another reason why I have decided, as I happen to be the Head of the Order, to dissolve it. No one has persuaded me to this decision. “This is no magnificent

deed, because I do not want followers, and I mean this. The moment you follow someone you cease to follow Truth. I am not concerned whether you pay attention to what I say or not. I want to do a certain thing in the world and I am going to do it with unwavering concentration. I am concerning myself with only one essential thing: to set man free. I desire to free him from all cages, from all fears, and not to found religions, new sects, nor to establish new theories and new philosophies. Then you will naturally ask me why I go the world over, continually speaking. I will tell you for what reason I do this: not because I desire a following, not because I desire a special group of special disciples. (How men love to be different from their fellowmen, however ridiculous, absurd and trivial their distinctions may be! I do not want to encourage that absurdity.) I have no disciples, no apostles, either on earth or in the realm of spirituality. “Nor is it the lure of money, nor the desire to live a comfortable life, which attracts me. If I wanted to lead a comfortable life I would not come to a camp or live in a damp country! I am speaking frankly because I want this settled once and for all. I do not want these childish discussions year after year. One newspaper reporter, who interviewed me, considered it a magnificent act to dissolve an organization in which there were thousands and thousands of members. To him it was a great act because, he said: “What will you do afterwards, how will you live? You will have no following, people will no longer listen to you.” If there are only five people who will listen, who will live, who have their faces turned towards eternity, it will be sufficient.

Meiyappan’s betting scandal will haunt Srinivasan N. Srinivasan was going through a tough time and was almost on the verge of losing his job. But somehow he managed things according to his wishes and waited patiently to achieve success in the end. He was not worried when his son-inlaw Gurunath Meiyappan was called for an inquiry in connection with match fixing and spot fixing charges. Later he quit the post as President of the BCCI temporarily and kept a proxy in Jagmohan Dalmiya as interim president and now won the election unopposed ang got his appointed place back. As per apex court N. Srinivasan can take charge of BCCI, but the Board must keep off IPL spot fixing probe. What would rile Srinivasan is that the bench not only mentioned Meiyappan and Chennai Super Kings, totally controlled by the Board chief by name in its order, it also widened the probe panel's ambit to include alleged irregularities in the IPL Governing Body's decision to cancel the Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warrior franchises. Even though it is a win-win situation for the President he will be on tenterhooks in future affairs of the Board.

matches and tarnished the image of IPL in general and the Chennai Super Kings in particular. As denied by Srinivasan, withdrawing the role of his son-in-law once IPL scam came into the open, the truth has emerged with the autobiography of Hussey. It's all in the game and in Indian cricket fixing is part and parcel of the game since the year 1966 when Gary Sobers' team toured India. Initially it was a close kept secret. Now everything is in the open. The trend still continues in front of the nose of BCCI president and other Board officials. SHAKY SITUATION: N. Srinivasan is now on a wobbly wicket after the apex court appointed panel found his son-in-law, Meiyappan, guilty of betting and spot fixing. has been charge sheeted in the IPL betting scandal. In his book, 'Underneath The Southern Cross', Hussey has commented that Srinivasan ceded control of the team to his son-in-law. The courts and the police should take note of this matter and act accordingly. The world has seen Meiyappan sitting in the dugout with players, on television, hence matches played by the Chennai Super Kings should be properly investigated.

AS in the past, BCCI is trying its best to avoid coming under RTI, so that the members can make huge money without any body's interference. Despite all the trouble and tribulations after the IPL fixing controversy, the Board appointed an internal committee and the panel gave Meiyappan and Raj Kundra a clean chit and thus Srinivasan was to take back the BCCI president's post. The clean chit given by the BCCI appointed panel of two-retired high court judges in the IPL spot fixing probe does not surprise anyone and it is not acceptable to the Delhi Police authorities. It was just any eyewash of a decision by the BCCI appointed panel of judges and does not hold good in a court of law. Neither Mumbai Police nor Delhi Police have closed the investigations into the IPL match fixing scam. Now

Kundra and Meiyappan need to clear their names before resuming stewardship of their respective IPL franchises. The credibility of the BCCI will not be restored by an internal inquiry. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

AFTER successfully resisting any attempt of public scrutiny for years, the BCCI looked highly vulnerable on Monday, thanks to the betting allegations against Board president and CSK owner N. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. At least temporarily, the charges have forced the country's richest and most boorish sports creature into a clueless retreat. National media reported that Srinivasan's son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan who also heads the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was in constant touch with actor Vindoo Dara Singh, who was arrested by Mumbai police in connection with the betting-fixing scandal. Meiyappan reportedly had provided him with VIP access to the inner circles of the CSK. Although the reports were guarded in naming Meiyappan early, by evening all guns were blazing against him. But now that the scandal has reached his doorstep, what does Srinivasan have to say? Whether he can throw away the rotten egg or try to save son-in-law of the soil, where crickets is not just a religion but it was highly considered a game gentlemen. — Calicut Krishnan Ramani, Vashi

B(RIGHT) IDEA: As a security measure, a uniform colour code for all fishing vessels is a good proposal, which will make it easy to monitor the high seas.

Coastal security proposal APROPOS 'Navy moots common colour for all fishing vessels in State' (ADC, Feb 10), considering the vulnerability of Mumbai the financial and entertainment capital of India, it is certainly a good idea to implement this decision of providing the uniformity in colour of all the state fishing vessels. I would rather add to suggest that all other water transports too like the catamarans and tourist/ passenger ferry boats need to be coloured uniformly to identify and distinguish any foreign/ intruding water transport. Mumbai had experienced unforgettable devastation by the 1993 serial bomb attack followed by the 26/11 terrorist attack in 2008, both of which were triggered by the terrorists breaching our pathetically porous coast lines which stretches to nearly 900 km. However, the fishing folk would certainly demand some financial relief in this Naval initiative of imposing

ATROCIOUS: Bank staffers are already enjoying considerable benefits; there is no reason for them to strike intermittently and hold the economy and public to ransom. THE grievances of the bank employees may not have been addressed by the Govt., but they have no right to vent their frustration towards the public by striking continuously for two full working days i.e. on February 10 and 11. The banks are the nerve line of the country for the transaction of commercial activities and the strike paralysed the same involving crores at a time when the Nation is reeling under inflation, deficits and economic disaster. There is no gainsaying the fact that the bank employees are already enjoying considerable benefits and there is no reason for them to make it a habit to go on strike intermittently and compel the public to face a lot of difficulties and make them suffer apart

from inducing losses. Documents have to be retired from the banks for Customs clearance in the absence of which the importer will be liable to pay demurrage and detention charges for delayed clearances. The charges are heavy and the unavailability of materials will affect the production and cause dislocation of work. Unless severe punitive measures are considered against striking bank employees, this pattern of black mailing would keep recurring. The time has come to take firm steps to put a stop to this. The public hope that the Govt. with the RBI would take necessary steps to ensure that such arm twisting tactics by bank employees do not occur in future. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

A

n uprising has taken the supposedly democratic administrative set-up in this country by storm – the Aam Aadmi Party rebellion, led by a successful IIT graduate, who has sacrificed all his educational prowess to turn into the man who holds the key to the fortunes of the national capital. I might not be very well-versed with how the statistics stand, but here’s my take, the opinion of a 17-yearold Indian, on how I feel things might or rather, will change. There’s promise in Kejriwal’s voice, but those old skeletons with ‘Gandhi caps’ and white kurtas representing numerous parties from all across India are degree-holders in promise-making. What is it that sets Kejriwal apart? There’s belief written all over the Aam Aadmi Party’s campaign, but isn’t that also the motto of nearly 35 medium-scale parties that exist in all these powerful states of the Indian subcontinent? What is it that sets the Aam Aadmi Party apart? My answer to this would be simple. The courage to not accept

things the way they are. Ever since we were in the fourth grade in school, we’ve heard the adage ‘Be the change you want to see’, but most of us behaved like we didn’t give a damn about what was being done and what was being said. We’re all citizens of the same country, all wanting to live ‘happily ever after’ but there’s this one bunch from among us, who have given up glorious careers overseas and handsome salaried jobs in India and dedicated all their might towards the AAP. At this moment, their reign in Delhi could be compared to Virat Kohli’s stay at the crease during a second-inning run chase. The crowds expect everything. An early woe that of irregular water supply was dealt with effectively. Delhi, a city where the crime rate is higher than Rohit Sharma’s strike rate abroad, suddenly witnesses the first rape case under their beloved and newly appointed government led by Kejriwal. A lot more of the same had happened during Sheila Dixit’s term but like it was back then, the mobs lashed out at everyone including the government and suddenly Kejriwal is under tremen-

dous pressure. Although the AAP is to be blamed for this outrageous act against a Danish national getting molested in the national capital, their response is certainly different and much more aggressive than the previous administrators. That mention of the term ‘aggression’ shall rid you of confusion on the comparison between Kejriwal and Kohli. Being hit is another thing but getting back up and delivering is what makes you a hero. While both do it against different opponents and at different magnitudes, the fact remains that they’re both down but not out. Another characteristic that stands out about AAP’s approach is that none of them have ‘Gandhi’ or ‘Yadav’ or ‘Singh’ following their first names. The son of a political supremo often feels that he holds the administrative reigns and owns the country as soon as he is born but in case of AAP, individuals who might have travelled alongside the Delhi crowd or halted at the same signal on a busy road on a Bajaj scooter are now the ones who have taken up the mantle of leading this metropolitan and thus have received overwhelming support from the ‘janta’. Transparency will prevail if not immediately but eventually. Promises made during his beautiful speech at his swearing-in ceremony might seem really unrealistic but I would say the same about the daunting total of 320 in 36 overs against Sri Lanka where Virat Kohli exploded onto the scene with a thumping 133*. The conditions seem really tough, the remaining competitors in the battlefield are dreading this challenge, most others have given up, quite a few aren’t bothered about the situation India is in, but there are these two dynamites from Delhi who possess the potential to pull India out of all its troubles every time the chips are down - Kejriwal and Kohli!

FOOD REVIEW Claudelle Monis

Fun ‘Meating’ place I

MBISS, the Meating joint, in Bandra is a fun and inexpensive place for meat lovers to indulge in food from across the world. Serving primarily European and continental food, IMBISS is every meat lover's delight. The Grilled Bratwurst, Pork Schnitzel and Duck sausage with slaw and mustard are good meals that fill you up adequately with-

out making you feel stuffed. However, the Buffalo Wings and Baby Back Spare Ribs take the cake and are a must try. The ambience is unfortunately not much to speak of, since the place is a little too cramped for real comfort. However, the fact that the food is pocket-friendly makes this place a definite on the must-visit list.

Sippy, this one’s for all the Khurrana fans! A romantic comedy it also stars Kunaal Roy Kapur, who really saves the show and is extremely funny throughout the movie. This flick has some great

music including a Punjabi number sung by Khurrana himself. The leading lady ‘Pooja Salvi’ is quite a disappointment and your left wondering why she was cast in this movie in the first place! Watch it for eye-candy Khurrana and funny man Kapur and ofcourse the music.

says Shahnawaz Khan, Assistant Account Executive at Blue Lotus Communications

I

have always dreamed of being a part of the advertising and media industry. It was a no brainer when I chose this line of work and therefore I did my post graduation in Advertising and Public Relations (PGDAPR). The course laid the foundation for me in my career as a PR executive. I understood the basics of how the industry worked and what my expectations were. It prepared me for long working hours. I knew that the job ahead would <<Shahnawaz not be an easy one and would require total Khan commitment. I was ready to put in my best to make a success of this career. The media Industry is a fascinating one. The interaction with clients, the events held to promote a product or an initiative for a social cause, socializing with the press and celebrities excites me. The glamor mixed with hard work make the job very interesting. As you can expect, my training days were not easy. I had to work for between 14 and 16 hours a day. Weekends were not counted as I had to be ready to attend an event or meet a client to prepare the next course of action. I handled some big clients during my initial period and I understood the pressure that accompanied the perks of being a PR agent. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with well known brands. As I am now employed as an Assistant Account Executive, my basic job is to know the ins and outs of clients and understanding their working culture. This makes my job much easier and more interesting. Once you know the client, you need to tap journalists, keep a track of their work, what articles they write, if their articles are authored or a trend feature. After understanding the working style of the journalist, I start introducing my clients to the media. Apart from the money to do the course and get a diploma, I had to invest a lot of time and patience in my career. Sometimes, journalists were not easy to locate or convince as the story would not be very appealing to them. Attending events on a day-off does require commitment to the job. Understanding and composure was needed because sometimes you do get demanding clients and it is not easy to convince them of the project and the

strategies involved. When you are a fresher, you should not think about the salary you are drawing. The best earning is to earn the confidence of the client, your boss and most importantly journalists from various departments. A good rapport with a journo makes it easier for the PR agent to climb the stairs of success. However, the approximate salary is between Rs.12, 000 and Rs.15,000. A person becomes a professional the moment they join the industry and months of hard work and persistence and commitment to the job makes the individual recognized from the word go and there are no two ways about it. Smart work plays an important role in the career of an established PR professional, as hardworking adds the cherry on the cake. Apart from being smart and hard work, the portfolio of the agency also matters. The salary can then go to about Rs. 50,000. A small scale PR business person can earn a profit of between Rs. 3,00,000 and Rs. 5,00,000 per month. The media industry is full of glamour, events and social gatherings. The most basic advantage however, is meeting high profile clients and being a part of their brand campaign. However, in this glamorous environment it is important not to lose focus of your goals in your career. Socialising is only a small part of the work; the major player is your hard work and commitment. Planning and maintaining the brand identity may not be easy. It is the role of the PR person to develop proper brand identity when competition exists in the market. The image of the product, service and organization is of prime importance. I am enjoying my job profile and my colleagues are very helpful and co-operative. I would like to see myself at the top of the chain in a few years from now. It will take hard work and persistence and I am ready to prove it, especially since my company is very encouraging and appreciative. For those who want to get into this profession, I would say, make time to stay on top of current events. Read a newspaper, listen to the radio, watch the news on television. Whatever approach you choose, it will make you more interesting and it will make you better at your job. Consider it an investment. Above all you must be ready to work hard.

FTI is to film making, like IIT is to technology After being nominated twice for the prestigious Oscar award, writer, actor, director and producer Ajita Suchitra Veera is quite excited about the recognition she has received as a filmmaker. In an exclusive interview with Vijay Shanker, Ajita reveals her aspirations, her transition from genetics to films and the significance of education, entertainment and information through the medium of cinema What has been your formal education? I was born in Hyderabad, hence my schooling and college was in Hyderabad itself; later I enrolled myself for a Masters degree in Genetics. How did you get into film making? While I was studying for my Masters degree in Genetics, I suddenly realised that my passion lies in cinema, so I left Genetics half way and enrolled myself for a course in direction at the famous Film and Television Institute in Pune. Any particular reason for selecting FTI? Well I believe that FTI is to film-making, what IIT is to technology, as they are most prestigious. There are other schools for films, like the Satyajit Ray Film Institute in Kolkata which is quite reputed but FTI holds supreme and it is not easy to get an admission and I feel am privileged. Do you feel that film making is in your genes? I feel you are right, as from childhood I have been exposed to world cinema, my family and my maternal grandfather used to watch classics like ‘Achut Kanya’, ‘Kismet’, ‘Bandhini’. So cinema got into my fascination but I never thought seriously about it.

Have you thought of combining genetics with cinema? Yes that is an interesting thought process and I must work on it. What has been your course structure at FTI? In the course of direction, all the subjects related to film making are taught, like cinematography, editing, sound and the significance of light too. I would say cinema is scientific and it is not easy to capture moving images. It is a complex art form of technique, imagination and sensibility. Tell us about your student assignments? The first short film that I made while I was a student was ‘Notes On Her’. The basic idea was adapted from the short story written by the famous writer Mhasweta Devi known as ‘Draupadi’. A journalist is asked to identify a rebel who is dead, it was experimental and quite interesting and was nominated for the Oscar in the students category, I was quite excited but never really understood the significance of the Oscars in my student days. How important is the script for you? The script is important but it has to touch my heart, the subject has to be

interesting, otherwise I won’t be interested in making a film on it. Science fiction, adventure, social issues, metaphysics, nature, human beings and the various levels of the mind pertaining to the conscious and the subconscious are the fields of my interest. Tell us about your feature film ‘Ballad of Rustom’ which has been nominated for the Oscars? It is a musical and a thought-provoking film of a government servant, Rustom, who is a ordinary man with extraordinary ideas, his journey and his encounter with a female painter forms the crux of the story. It will be released shortly and am happy with the wonderful response I have received so far. It is shot in cinemas-

« INTERVIEW

cope 35mm. What do you feel about cinema as a means for education, entertainment or information? Every aspect is important. If cinema can cleverly combine all the three aspects like education, entertainment and information, it will be wonderful but that novelty is rare. For me a film should be interesting and if one can learn something from it, it is fine. For me film making is a social process where I feel am committed to the society, if I can bring about a change in the system or the society for a better and holistic life style, then I feel that my service to the society has been taken care of. Veteran actor Sunil Dutt has once remarked that films fail as they have no soul in it, I truly agree to it.

Which role of yours is of prime importance, actor, writer, director or producer? Every role is significant, but the role of the director and writer is of prime important. As director I am the captain of the ship and I have a larger canvas as I have to control and direct all aspects of film making which is quite challenging. As an actor my duty is to enact the part well and nothing more than that. Your advice to students and young film makers? It is important to study every aspect of film making, being a complex and mass communication medium, you need a lot of patience and it is important to observe world classics and initially it is always fine to start working as an assistant with any top director.

The school will accommodate 24 students per class between playgroup level and class VI and provide personalised attention. The school is affiliated to Cambridge Board and will follow (CIE) curriculum, an international body. The emphasis will be on experiential and collaborative learning. Admissions have begun for the new academic year, which commences in June, 2014. Through the use of modern teaching methods, state-of-the-art facilities and top class faculty, the school aims to create an environment that promotes creativity, education and individual excellence through self-discovery. The school believes that ‘Each and every child is a star’ with infinite potential. Its efforts will therefore be to accurately access this potential, identify each child’s strengths and help them to be the best they can be. The Nahar International School with a modern global outlook will simultaneously aim to inculcate Indian values and ethics among students that would enable them to face the world better, he added. Teachers at Nahar International School will employ a variety of teaching strategies in the classroom and would be trained to listen to the voice of the learner and bring out the best in each child. They will also actively engage them in interactions. The teaching will be more practically oriented rather than plain theory. This process helps to develop independent learners as they start to model themselves along the teacher’s approach. Nahar’s educators will challenge the learners’ thinking and support them to learn and finally accomplish tasks independently. Its teaching methods will facilitate students to become independent and collaborative critical thinkers. Periodic workshops will also be held for parents to better integrate into the child’s learning process.

entistry offers a very promising option for one’s career. With changing food habits, lifestyle and increasing urbanisation, dentists are in demand today. Not many, however, realize that dentistry can be both an artistic as well as scientific profession. As people’s income increases, they are increasingly interested in improving their smiles to boost their looks, personality and self-confidence. This is where cosmetic dentistry comes into play. Cosmetic Dentistry deals not with dental health per se, but with the appearance of teeth. The discipline involves procedures like whitening, reshaping or straightening teeth, installing crowns and dental bridges, and putting protective veneers over teeth. Who can be a Cosmetic Dentist? The basic qualification that one needs to pursue a career in cosmetic dentistry is a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). This is a five-year course that includes a mandatory internship of one year. So it’s Valentine’s Day this Friday, and we asked youngsters whether Valentine’s Day has lost its charm and value and whether they celebrate it every year. We also asked them to define what the day means to them and how they plan to celebrate it this year! For me, Valentine’s Day is a day where people generally show unconditional love to the ones they care about. Commercialism and consumerism surrounding the holiday should be blamed for the loss of its charm. People in a relationship are pressured to spend money in the spirit of the day. In the end, everyone has his or her own way to celebrate this special occasion, whether it involves spending money or not. The most important thing is that people express their love for one another. I would be spending the day hanging out with friends. —Tulika Bhattacharya TYBMM, Ramnarain Ruia College How do I plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Well, I will attend my lectures then go home and sleep, something I’ve been doing for years. Valentines day has gained a lot of importance in recent years, thanks to the red roses and pillows hanging in gift shops and couples running to buy the best one. But in my opinion there is no such day that exists between couples. If you really love someone you wouldn’t need any such day to celebrate it. —Bansari Nagda, TYBMM, Ramnarain Ruia College

Valentine’s Day, according to me has not just lost its charm, but the whole meaning attached to it. People do not know the history or the significance latched to it, boiling down to being a mere teddy bear-giving and cards gifting day. If the heart breeds love, we don’t need to give it a materialistic edge. Spend yourself on that person, not money. When you celebrate Love, you celebrate every other emotion that comes with it. This valentine’s day, I might just pen down a poem, for my mum. —Apoorva S. Nanjangud TYBMM, Ramnarain Ruia College

adoration, unthinkable live performances, and an intangible radiance that can never be fully described. Sure, we all know that the world will never be the same without MJ, and yes, one could argue that his presence made us all feel a little better about the current state of pop stardom. But more importantly, MJ will forever be the last real, honest-togoodness pop star this world will ever see. No one will ever be able to match his greatness, because his greatness will never be capable of full explanation and we will

never stop loving him. Not only because he told us, with Quincy Jones, Lionel Ritchie and a host of other superstars, that ‘We are the World’, but also because, as he told us on ‘Dangerous’, he wanted us to help him ‘Heal the World’. And he wanted us to do it as one. MJ’s death not only marked the end of an era, it marked the end of pop music as we knew it. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. You knew pain, you knew the love of millions. Without you, we’ll have to start healing all over again, together.

OH NO! NOT VALENTINE’S DAY!

he one man who truly moon walked over our hearts; whose voice was a treat to the ears; who the world can never forget; the legend, the star, the king of pop – Michael Jackson. No young singer ever sang, or has ever sung to this day, the way MJ did and it would therefore not be an exaggeration to say that he was the most advanced popular singer of his age in the history of recorded music. His untrained tenor was uncanny. By all rights, he shouldn’t have had as much vocal authority as he did at such a young age. But he was brilliant in all ways. His dance moves were impeccable and MJ was undoubtedly one of the most inspirational stars in the past few decades who mattered to the world and whose tracks like ‘Thriller’ and ‘Beat It’ still make people go gaga. Born in the small town of Indiana with four brothers and two sisters, MJ was a mentally fragile, abused AfricanAmerican child who spent his former years in a soon-to-decay Midwestern factory town with the civil rights movement bubbling around him. Yet, he became a part of the first ‘supergroup’ of the 1970s – The Jackson 5 – along with his brothers, after which he enjoyed years of stardom and popularity. His death on June 25, came as a shock to the world. We lost so much more than a legend. We lost the man who gave us a glimpse into how the world of pop music should be: unimaginable record sales,

ew Delhi: Turmoil in Parliament over Telangana and other issues took a toll on the proceedings for the fifth consecutive day yesterday, resulting in transaction of no substantial business in both Houses. While Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day at noon after one adjournment soon after it met for the day, Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day a little after 2 pm when it met after three adjournments in the pre-lunch sitting. The ruckus in both Houses, however, did not deter the Chair to allow introduction of four bills – three in Rajya Sabha and one in Lok Sabha – as members of several parties trooped into the Well raising slogans on their demands. As soon as Lok Sabha met for the

day, it was adjourned till noon within minutes, after members condoled the death of people in different accidents in Odisha and West Bengal. When it reassembled at noon, over 40 members from different parties, walked into the Well raising various issues, including Telangana and plight of Tamil fishermen. Amid continuing pandemonium, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House till Wednesday after laying of papers and introduction of a bill seeking to acquire certain areas in Mumbai for the Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial. In the din, the Speaker allowed Congress member Thokchom Meinya to raise the issue of attacks against Northeastern people in different parts of the country, including Delhi. He claimed that "racial

profiling" of these citizens was being carried out and wanted urgent action to check the menace. Pandemonium prevailed in Rajya Sabha too, with the House witnessing unruly scenes, leading to three adjournments in the pre-lunch session. The House was adjourned for the day minutes after 2 pm by Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien as members entered the Well raising slogans in support of their issues. Amid the din the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2014 and the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2014, were introduced. The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2013 was introduced at 2 pm.

Kejri orders probe into gas pricing, targets Moily, RIL N

ew Delhi: Opening a whole new front, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today ordered filing of an FIR against Petroleum Minister M. Veerappa Moily, former minister Murli Deora and RIL chief Mukesh Ambani for alleged collusion in the hike in prices of natural gas from KG basin. Asking the Centre to put on hold the decision to hike price of gas, to be implemented from April 1, he told a press conference that the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of his Government has been asked to file a criminal case under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Kejriwal, whose government survives on Congress support, has been needling the party by launching probes into alleged corruption in Commonwealth Games projects and other issues. But this is the first decision in which he has sought to target ministers at the Centre and a high-profile corporate. Alleging collusion between ministers, officials and RIL, Kejriwal said the details in the complaint were "shocking" and were an assault on the country's economic sovereignty amounting to anti-national activity. Quoting from the complaint, the Chief Minister said the impact of

the hike in gas price would cost the country a minimum of Rs 54,500 crore every year and allow RIL to make a future windfall profit of Rs 1.2 lakh crore. Attacking Kejriwal as "ignorant", Moily said he did not know how government functions. He said fixing of price of petroleum products is done as per expert advice. "I think I should sympathise with his ignorance. He should know how the government functions, how these things are done...I took special interest to ensure that the CNG and PNG prices are reduced. You should know that," he said.

ew Delhi: Cracking the whip, Congress yesterday expelled six Lok Sabha MPs from Seemandhra who had given a notice of no-confidence motion against Government opposing bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Faced with dissent in Andhra Pradesh, the party intended to send a strong message to those opposing creation of separate state with this decision but a dozen odd party MPs still maintained that they will vote against the Telangana bill when it comes to Parliament. "Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the decision of the disciplinary committee of the AICC to expel the six MPs from Andhra Pradesh with immediate effect," said AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi in a press release. The MPs expelled by Congress president Sonia Gandhi are Sabbam Hari, G.V. Harsha Kumar, V. Arun Kumar, L. Rajagopal, R. Sam-

Sonia Gandhi basiva Rao and A. Sai Pratap. "I am going to immolate myself in the Well of Lok Sabha if any attempt is made to introduce the Telangana bill," Lok Sabha MP Sabbam Hari told PTI. Corporates Setting Up Electoral Trusts By A Business Reporter

W

ith the Lok Sabha polls drawing near, the count of electoral trusts set up by companies to channelise their political funding is on the rise and at least 10 such entities have been registered, including those by Reliance, Tatas, Mahindras and Birlas. The trusts are being set up under a new framework that provides tax benefits for funds extended by corporates to political outfits. The norms require inclusion of the words 'Electoral Trust' in the names. Five of the 10 trusts were registered in the past one month. While the Tata conglomerate has set up the Progressive Electoral Trust, the Reliance group has established the People's Electoral Trust. The K K Birla group has registered the Samaj Electoral Trust Association, while Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta has set up the Janhit Electoral Trust. The Bharti group has formed the Satya Electoral Trust and the MP Birla group has incorporated the Paribartan Electoral Trust. BSE Launches Institutional Trading Platform On BSE SME By Dominic Rebello

C

ar sales in India fell 7.6 % in January, the fourth straight month of decline, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), in a market set to fall for the second straight year. Car sales fell to 160,289 vehicles Last month, the industry body said, as consumers kept a tight lid on spending, hurt by high interest rates and fuel costs in a slowing economy.Sales have fallen 5.2 % so far this fiscal year that ends in March. "There is no respite," said Sugato Sen, SIAM's Deputy Director General. “We are having a huge hope from the government that in the vote-on-account Budget, there will be some support for the auto industry," he said Sales of passenger vehicles, which include cars and utility vehicles, fell 9.3 % in January. Utility vehicles were a bright spot in the auto market a year ago, but an increase in factory gate duties and rising prices of diesel, which is commonly used to power such vehicles, has hit their sales as

well. Sales of motorcycles rose 4 % last month to 922,323, while commercial vehicle sales were down 20.9 % at 49,987, SIAM said. Demand for trucks and buses has been hit hard as industrial production and economic activity slows. The volume decline in passenger and commercial vehicles, which started in the second quarter of fiscal 2012, may continue in the fiscal year that starts in April, India Ratings & Research, a unit of Fitch Group, said in a recent note. However, the volume growth rate may turn positive after September, it said. Demand for cars has fallen, particularly in urban areas, with the economy growing at its slowest pace in a decade. Still, consumers in rural areas, where incomes are being partly boosted by strong monsoon rains, are helping some companies such as Maruti Suzuki, the country's top carmaker, offset the slowing sales. While there are no signs of an immediate recovery, the auto industry is hoping that the government may cut factory gate duties when it presents the interim budget, Sen said.

EW DELHI: Ousted from the Olympic movement due to tainted officials and government interference more than a year ago, India's exile came to an end after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) welcomed the country back into the fold within days of fresh elections in the scamriddled IOA. "The IOC Executive Board (EB) reinstated the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of India, the Indian Olympic Association, during an adhoc meeting in Sochi today," the IOC said in a statement. "The EB took this decision following a report about the IOA’s General Assembly and elections for a new Board, which were successfully held on 9 February 2014 and observed by an IOC delegation headed by IOC member Robin Mitchell," it added. The IOC lifted the 14-month old ban after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) barred charge-framed officials from its fresh election in which World Squash Federation chief and younger brother of BCCI boss N Srinivasan, N Ramachandran, was elected as the president. The decision comes after the IOC's three observers for the elections left Indian shores "satisfied with the IOA elections promising to submit a "favourable report to the IOC President". "The IOC observers told the EB members that the elections were held in full respect of the recently passed NOC constitution, which complies with all IOC requirements, including the clause that no person convicted or charge-framed can run for a position within the organisation," the IOC stated. As a result of the IOC's decisions, the Indian athletes will now be able to compete under the national flag at international events. They had been competing as independent athletes ever since the IOA was slapped with a suspension for failing to comply with the Olympic Charter and its statutes,

Luger Shiva Keshavan, Alpine skier Himanshu Thakur and cross-country skier Nadeem Iqbal during the Sochi Olympics ceremony marching under the Olympic flag. With this decision India can now complete under the national flag. relating specifically to good governance. The most immediate effect of this would be seen at the ongoing Winter Olympics in Sochi, where the Indians would now be allowed to carry the tri-colour during the closing ceremony after parading through the opening ceremony under an IOC flag. "It is the first time in Olympic history that a suspension of an NOC has been lifted during an Olympic Games, and the decision will have an immediate impact. Indian athletes entered the Sochi Games under the Olympic flag during the Opening Ceremony on 7 February 2014, and have competed as Independent Olympic Participants," the IOC said.

"The EB decision means they can now compete for the National Olympic Committee of India and will walk behind their national flag at the Closing Ceremony on 23 February. To symbolically mark the lifting of the suspension and in recognition of the three Indian athletes competing in Sochi, the Indian flag will be raised in the Olympic Village," it added. At the elections held on Sunday, All India Tennis Association (AITA) chief Anil Khanna was elected Treasurer which marked the exit of corruptiontainted Abhay Singh Chautala and Lalit Bhanot from the IOA. Chautala and Bhanot had been adamantly trying to fight the elections despite the IOC's strong objections but the duo

14-month Oly exile helped India clean up its system: Jitendra

N

EW DELHI: Sports Minister Jitendra Singh said India's 14month exile from the Olympic movement has come as a blessing in disguise as the hiatus forced the country to clean up the system. "In the last one year or so the sportspersons, sports lovers have raised their concerns and their voices. The Government of India had raised its voice in Lausanne (in May last year) and at other forums for lifting the ban on India. What we have been able to achieve in the last one year or so of exile is that a major step has been taken to clean up sports," Jitendra said here. He congratulated both the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and International Olympic Council (IOC) for bringing India back into the Olympic movement. Jitendra applauded IOA's decision to amend its Constitution to bar chargeframed persons from contesting its elections held on last Sunday. "I am thankful that this historic step has been taken and charge-framed people would not be able to contest the elections. Along with that, I

29

would like to add that majority of the National Sports Federations, except archery and boxing, have adopted the sports code," he said. "The Government of India is committed to bring in transparency, good governance in the field of sports. I am very happy that our sportspersons will be able to contest under the Indian flag," he added. Highlighting the Government's role in bringing India back into the Olympic movement, the Sports

Minister said his ministry could play a more active role in cleaning up sports in future. "The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had first raised with the IOC that the IOA constitution needed amendment and the people who are chargesheeted should not be allowed to contest elections," Jitendra said. "We have had various levels of discussions with all the stakeholders. Myself, along with with Secretary Sports had gone to Lausanne and finally,I am thankful that IOA had amended its constitution," said Jitendra. "We have played a hyper active role in bringing India back into the Olympic movement. I think Sports Ministry has a bigger role to play in future as far as transparency and good governance in sports is concerned," he said. Asked if the just-elected officebearers of IOA were the ones whose names have been recommended by the earlier tainted committee, Jitendra said, "I don't think just cosmetic changes have been made. "It's not a matter of giving names.

ultimately bowed under pressure when the world body threatened to permanently bar India from the Olympic movement. It all started 14 months ago when on December 4, 2012, the IOC suspended the IOA for adhering to the government's Sports Code and for allowing tainted persons to take part in the election process. In an act of defiance, IOA went ahead with the polls next day. The world body hit back by refusing to recognise Chautala and his team of office-bearers. The IOC later proposed a meeting with the IOA and government representatives but maintained that the Indian body must hold its elections solely under Olympic Charter to return to the Olympic fold.

NEW DELHI: Having endured a "strange" feeling while walking under the IOC flag in the opening ceremony of Sochi Winter Olympics, Himanshu Thakur is a relieved man now as he will be able to take part in the closing ceremony under the tri-colour after the world body today lifted the ban on the country. Shiva Kheshavan, Himanshu Thakur and Nadeem Iqbal took part in the opening ceremony on February 7 under the flag of International Olympic Committee as they entered the Games as Independent Olympic Participants. But now they will be able to walk under the tri-colour at the closing ceremony on February 23 after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted the suspension on Indian Olympic Association following IOA's election on Sunday. Himanshu and Iqbal will also be able to compete as Indian athletes. Keshavan has completed his event on Sunday as he finished 37th in men's singles luge competition, but Himanshu and Iqbal are yet to begin their campaign. Cross Country skier Iqbal has his 15km Classic run event on February 14 while Alpine skier Himanshu's Giant Slalom event begins on February 19. "It was a strange feeling that we three had to walk under the IOC flag during the opening ceremony. It's my first Winter Olympics and I was feeling bad that I would compete under IOC banner. But now I am going to take part as an Indian athlete.

Olympic exile over, let’s prepare for Asiad, CWG: Malhotra N

EW DELHI: Former Indian Olympic Association President Vijay Kumar Malhotra hailed the IOC's decision to lift the ban on India, saying the country should now focus on preparing for the Commonwealth and Asian Games scheduled later this year. "I am happy that suspension is over and now Indian teams and players will take part in the International events under the national flag," Malhotra said in a statement. Malhotra said India has always supported the Olympic charter and "hopefully the Olympic movement will become stronger in the country". Malhotra said with the lifting of the suspension, the IOA should now prepare the teams for the Commonwealth and Asian Games. "Besides the sports administrators, it is also the duty and responsibility of the sportspersons to gear up for the coming events and put up a good show to bring laurel to the country," he said.

Malhotra appealed to all the National Sports Federations to give their unstinting support to the newly-elected IOA office-bearers. "It is a time for all of us to put up a united show for the betterment of Indian sports. People of the country are looking up to the IOA with lot of expectations and we should not let them down," he said.

UMBAI: The world record set by Heena Sidhu-Pandit, who became the first Indian pistol shooter to bag an ISSF-World Cup Finals gold last November, has been ratified by the world shooting body. Heena shot a score of 384 in the preliminaries and a high tally of 203.8 in the final round in that event. The ISSF, which had made major changes in the rules to make the sport spectator-friendly, have considered them to be positive and should be continued with and consequently the scores by Heena, then considered provisional, have now been officially accepted as a record, said a media release issued by the Maharashtra Rifle Association on Tuesday. To add to this historic first by an Indian shooter, Heena has climbed a place in the world rankings and is now second on the list. The performance has also brought the shooter on the cover-page of

Beijing (2008) and London (2012), defending champion Arunova Zorana (Serbia), and Olene Kosteyvech (Ukraine), a gold and bronze medallist at the Athens (2004) and London (2012) Olympic Games. This trio finished behind Heena who, after a slightly hesitant start, went on to shoot 15 consecutive bulls eye. This enabled the Indian a win by 5.2 points, perhaps the biggest margin of victory at this level of competition. Having won a gold at the World Cup Finals, a year earlier than her intended plans, the shooter has changed her base to Pune from Patiala after getting married to another international shooter Ronak Pandit. ANGALORE: Mired in controversies but lucrative nonetheless, the Indian Premier League will conduct its seventh players' auction here tomorrow with some of the biggest global and Indian stars going under the hammer alongside uncapped players for the first time. The justice Mudgal Committee report on corruption in the league might have come as a huge embarrassment for both the players and franchises but that is unlikely to affect the multi-million dollar auction in which 514 players -- 219 of them uncapped - are up for sale. The report, which has found BBCI President N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan to be involved in betting and passing team information, was presented to the Supreme Court yesterday, raising questions on CSK's continuance in the cashrich League. The court, however, has allowed the auctions to go ahead. Controversial England batsman Kevin Pietersen will be one of the first players to go under the hammer along with senior India discards Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh in the two-day auction here. But the biggest draw of IPL VII auction would be without doubt New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson, who has been slotted at No 83 in the 10th set which has the second array of international all-rounders. Among the 219 capped players, who have played some form of international cricket, 169 are Indians while 50 are overseas players. This will also be the first time

With retaining a number of players in the squad, defending champions Mumbai Indians [pic on top] just like Chennai Super Kings will have to spend the remaining money in their purse cautiously. in IPL's history that uncapped players will be auctioned. The cricketers have been divided into 53 sets with each lists ranging from eight to 10 players. The first list that consists of some of the biggest stars of Indian and international cricket named as Marquee 1 or M1. While Pietersen's international career may have come to an abrupt end, but the maverick England batsman will be in demand as he is set to be the fourth player to be auctioned on the first day at the ITC Gardenia. Along with Pietersen, the likes of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, David Warner, Ashes hero Mitchell

Johnson, Mahela Jayawardene, and the recently-retired Jacques Kallis will also go under the hammer at the first go. Murali Vijay is also present in M1 list where all players have a base price of Rs 2 crore save Warner (Rs 1.5 crore). The second list of marquee player or M2, as they are slotted, consists of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, Australian ODI and T20 captain George Bailey, veteran speedster Zaheer Khan, South African batsman Faf Du Plessis, Australian batsman Michael Hussey and West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy to name a few. Like in the previous years, no Pakistan players feature in the IPL list while there are a huge 28

sets slotted for the uncapped Indian and overseas players. While young South African keeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, who scored a hat-trick of ODI centuries is in the first list of capped wicketkeepers (WK 1) with a base price of Rs 1 crore, flavour of the season Anderson has been slotted in the second set of international all-rounder (AL 2) at No 83. The slotting of Anderson at 83 will mean that there will be a 'Bidding War' for the in-form burly Black Caps all-rounder as some of the teams with higher salary caps like Delhi Daredevils will have to face the might of Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians as the franchises are supposed to be on even keel by then.

My endeavour is to look after Ishant dropped from Asia Cup, all three formats: Srinivasan WT20; Raina sacked from ODIs By Kushan Sarkar

EW DELHI: BCCI president N Srinivasan, who is set to take over as the new ICC chairman, said his prime focus during his tenure would be to make all the three formats of the game equally important. The International Cricket Council (ICC) board passed some key structural and financial reforms last Saturday, which formalized powerhouse India's role as the game's financial bedrock and paved the way for Srinivasan to chair the ICC Board from July. As per the resolution passed, a new Executive Committee will be formed to report to the board. The initial chair of this Executive Committee (ExCo) will be Wally Edwards from Cricket Australia while the chair of the Finance and Commercial Affairs Commit-

tee (F&CA) will continue to be Giles Clarke from the ECB. "For me, all three formats are equally important. The endeavour is to look after all three formats as it is necessary for the health and development of the game," Srinivasan told PTI during an interaction here. Some of the key elements of the resolution are the creation of Test Cricket Fund to protect the traditional format of the game, providing opportunities to associate members to play Test cricket, a new financial model for Full Members and enhanced support for the leading Associate Members. Srinivasan said that the member nations will stand to gain more out of the new arrangement. "I am very happy that new resolution will pave the way for bringing in stability in world cricket. The new resolution was necessary for better financial health of the cricketing nations. It will generate more income for member nations," he said.

IN BRIEF Australia calls up veterans for T20 World Cup

SYDNEY: Evergreen veterans Brad Hogg and Brad Hodge, with a combined age of 82, were called up to the Australian squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh next month. The sprightly Hogg, 43, has been in top form in the domestic Big Bash League with his wrist spin proving hard to handle, while Hodge, 39, has been prolific with the bat for the Melbourne Stars in the same competition. If he takes the field, Hogg is set to become the oldest player in the history of international T20 cricket as Australia look for their first trophy after four unsuccessful attempts. Another veteran, wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, 36, is also included for the March 16-April 6 tournament in a 15-man squad skippered by George Bailey and featuring Test stars Mitchell Johnson, David Warner, and Shane Watson. THE SQUAD: George Bailey (capt), Dan Christian, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, Glenn Maxwell, James Muirhead, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

ICC members to honour bilateral commitments until 2020

KARACHI: All the member nations of the International Cricket Council (ICC) have pledged to honour bilateral commitments with each other until 2020 despite the radical reforms approved at the executive board meeting in Singapore last weekend. A Pakistan Cricket Board official told PTI that though under the reforms pushed by India, Australia and England the future tours program would not be run by the ICC from 2015 onwards but member countries had pledged to honor bilateral series with each other until 2020. "That is the commitment made by each member but from 2015 onwards members can also negotiate new bilateral agreements with each other depending on their available window and also financial benefits to them," the official said. He said under the existing FTP Pakistan was due to tour England for three tests, five one-day internationals and two T20 matches after the 2015 World Cup. "The England and Wales cricket board has assured us that despite the new FTP arrangements they will honor their bilateral agreement with us," the PCB official said.

Karnataka in control in Irani Trophy match against ROI

BANGALORE: Karnataka inched closer to winning the Irani Trophy crown after Chidambaram Gautam's brilliant 122-run knock guided them to a mammoth 606 in their first innings against Rest of India on the third day. The total gave Karnataka a huge first innings lead of 405 runs before they reduced ROI to 114 for three in their second innings, leaving the visitors trailing by 291 runs with seven wickets in hand. Karnataka first skittled out the visitors for 201 in their first innings and then batted with responsibility to reach 606 all out with Gautam cracking a sparkling century. At stumps, Baba Aparajith and Dinesh Karthik were batting on 42 and nine runs respectively for Rest of India. Much was expected of Gautam Gambhir but he failed to impress the national selectors, who had descended here to pick the World T20 and Asia Cup ODI squads. The India discard edged one to Manish Pandey at second slip, who took a magnificent diving catch.
