ar bigger than the stakes in the year 2009 general elections, the turnover in the forthcoming elections, scheduled in April, is expected to cross Rs.70,000 crore to Rs.80,000 crore in the illegal betting business or satta bazar of India. The same was around Rs.50,000 crore in the year 2009. The bulk of odds were announced on the evening of March 10 by top Indian bookies currently based at an undisclosed location in Dubai. These bookies strongly believe that BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

may get close to the magical figure of 272 seats as more alliance partners will come to the fold at a later stage. Their estimate suggests that the Congress would face resistance above 75 seats and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by it could end up with a dismal 100 to 105 seats. Apart from India, punters would place their bets from all over the world, especially from London, Pakistan, MiddleEast and US, asserted the bookies. Odds on BJP's victory on 200 seats are pegged at Rs.0.25 paise for every rupee bet.

CITY OPINIONS

Will the allotment of separate funds to police stations help in better detection? Mansoor Darvesh Social activist Yes. This gives additional help to the local police stations while they are probing the case, and need to part with cash for information. Darshan Panchal MBA Student Yes. This would, to a certain extent, also stop policemen from the local police stations going to collect their covert haftas from roadside stalls. Shivshankar Dey Engineering Student Yes. Such funds would certainly help the police stations as the detection will get done with better results.

Shivraj Nevrekar Cinematographer No. This in fact could end up becoming a racket in which the police could pocket the money by showing the expense on paper. Amol Kale Hotel Owner May Be. If used in a precise and authentic way it will surely work to ensure a better rate of detections.

MU's virtual classroom link stays freezed on the portal; 400 colleges still wait for online lectures from virtual classroom By Yatin Ingle

T

he Mumbai University's claim of having begun lectures in its virtual classroom seems hollow as its webpage still appears blank. When the ADC tried to check the web link with the help of the MU staff, it was found that the staff themselves could not access the links. Since last August, the web link has not carried any records of the lectures or seminars conducted in the virtual classroom. The virtual classroom concept was born on August 19, 2013 with features like audio-video conferencing, webinar, wed conferencing, digital writing, High Definition cameras and internet connectivity. This classroom is used for conducting high-profile seminars, conferences, workshops, high-end academic courses, training programmes and creating open education resources along with running open and distance education programmes. The main purpose of the virtual room is to facilitate knowledge sharing with students, anywhere at anytime through the internet. It is supposed to be modelled on the virtual classroom at Harvard University. As per the MoU, the seminars

n Tuesday afternoon, a board examiner caught a student for copying while attempting his Algebra paper for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board exams at the Y.B Chavan School in Kandivli. After frisking the student, stunned examination authorities found another set of question papers in the student’s pocket. The question papers are said to be preserved with tight security by even the police. This is the very first time that a board exam paper has leaked in the Mumbai Division. According to the rules, the board gives out one set of question papers from four sets marked A,B,C and D. The papers are kept and transported amidst tight security from the time they are given out from the board office till the time the exams are completed and answer-sheets taken back to the board office. In yesterday's incident at the Y.B Chavan school in Kandivli, the examiner noticed the student tally-

ing two question papers, and on checking saw that the student had made markings on the question papers which indicated he was copying the answers. The examiner then frisked the student and recovered another set of question papers from the student’s pocket. The student had carried the question paper of SET C, whereas he had got SET D in the exams. It was later confirmed that the student had carried an extra set of question papers along with him into the examination hall. The student was then charged with copying and handed over to the board examination authorities for further investigations. According to sources, the student’s father is a policeman and was taking the custody of the Algebra papers, when he took out one of the question papers from SET C and gave it to his son. The ADC spoke to Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, State board, Mumbai Division, who said “The examiner found an extra copy of the question paper and the student he has been charged for copying.

The web portal displays a page stating the configurations for the viewing the webcast. The configurations are much higher for a student to view it from a cyber cafe or from his home as the required upgradations and bandwidth are higher. On the other hand, only recorded lecture series from video cassettes have been running on the web portal, which too are unavail-

wing to the declaration of Lok Sabha election dates, the Mumbai University has rescheduled some of its exam dates. The examination scheduled for April 16, 17, 23 and 24 have been rescheduled as follows: Exams scheduled for April 16,

2014 have been rescheduled to April 19, 2014 Exams scheduled for April 17, 2014 have been rescheduled to April 26, 2014 Exams scheduled for April 23, 2014 have been rescheduled to May 3, 2014 Exams scheduled for April 24, 2014 have been rescheduled to May 10, 2014

able due to the need for higher internet configurations. The varsity had stated that the virtual classroom will have 58 seats and will be connected to an auditorium with a capacity of over 300, but none of that seems to be in place. Subhash Athavale, member, Mumbai University and College Teachers' Association (MUCTA) said, “After the virtual classroom link was unavailable from our personal computers, we checked it from the varsity's departments but we were shocked that the depart-

ments themselves were unable to access the portal. Its just a PDF page stating that the bandwidth is too less for loading the web page. This is the sloppy work of MU that it's letting go such a good concept. If only recorded lectures from video cassettes had to be uploaded, then why did the MU bring up this virtual classroom spending corers of money? Students from rural areas will be unable to view these webcasts if available ever due to heavy internet configurations”. Of the 700 colleges affiliated to Mumbai University, 420 have already enrolled for the digital system, A-VIEW; but none of the lectures from the virtual classrooms have been telecasted live or uploaded on the virtual classroom's website yet. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU said, “Whenever any department has to use the virtual classroom, they write to the varsity and then the authorities decide upon it. Recently one of the departments has carried out a session in the virtual classroom. Soon the lectures will be available and students can view the web-casts of these lectures. The varsity will also upload the recorded lectures of the virtual classroom.”

When I asked the secretary, I was told that the matter was handled by two committee members and they had taken my niece’s signature”. Singh further said, “When I spoke to Shera, Poonam Jhavar and some others, I found that none of them had been informed. Then, a fortnight ago, during the AGM we demanded that the committee show us the letter. I was shocked to find that there were three different initials against my flat numbers. A few others too found that the initials on the letter were not theirs”. Shera said, “I have an office in the building and was

shocked to learn that these people have allowed a mobile tower on the terrace without asking me. When I sought an explanation, I was told that I had put my signature to it. However, I found that it was not my signature and hence complained to the police”. The two accused tried to withdraw Rs.1.90 crore from a nationalised bank, using a counterfeit cheque

By Zuber Ansari

T

he Versova police have arrested the owner of a film production firm and his associate who allegedly tried to withdraw Rs.1.90 crore from the Versova branch of a nationalised bank allegedly by depositing a counterfeit cheque bearing the name of a Lucknow based account holder. Bank officials suspected foul play after they found that the quality of the cheque was dubious. They then enquired with the actual account holder in Lucknow and

learnt that he had not issued any cheque to anyone. They then lodged a complaint with the Versova police. The arrested suspects have been identified as Shahjama Jabbar Ansari (40), who is proprietor of Aiman Pictures and his associate, Amar Divedi. Ansari lives in Goregaon (W) while Divedi lives in Nalasopara. According to the police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon when Ansari and his friend Divedi visited Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) in Four Bungalows, Andheri

(W) and deposited a cheque. The bank employee suspected foul play as the cheque was issued from Lucknow and the cheque holder was a businessman there. “As per our bank’s norms we verify with the account holder after looking at his transactions. Our staffer asked Ansari for what purpose the account holder had issued one cheque for such a huge amount” said a bank official on condition of anonymity. “Ansari replied that he had executed a big project for the account holder. But we were not convinced

and also found the quality of the cheque was not genuine. So Ansari was asked to come the next day since prior intimation is required to withdraw such a big amount. Ansari and Divedi then left,” added the official. “When the bank official verified with the account holder in Lucknow and learnt that he had not issued any cheque. It was also found to be a counterfeit cheque. The bank's manager, Jagdish Joshi then registered a complaint against the duo with us,” said a police officer of the Versova police station.

“Following the complaint we laid a trap in the bank and when the dua arrived to collect the money we nabbed them. Both have been arrested under charges of cheating, forgery and several other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code,” said senior police inspector, H.R. Parmale of the Versova police station. “We are interrogating them to know their past criminal record and also verifying whether they have used similar modus operandi earlier with any other bank,” said another police officer. Syedna rift rages on Late Syedna Burhanuddin's brother Qutbuddin's faction claims he was appointed successor on December 10, 1965 and not Shehzada Mufaddal, the second son of the departed spiritual leader By Philip Varghese

T

wo months after the Dawoodi Bohra spiritual head Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin passed away, the succession battle for the title of 'Syedna' of the Dawoodi Bohra Community seems to have intensified with followers of the late Syedna's brother Mazoon Khuzaima Qutbuddin who told media persons that the late Syedna had appointed Qutbuddin as his successor. In a press conference on Tuesday, Dr. Abdeali Qutbuddin, a PhD from University of Manchester said, “After the sad and tragic demise of our beloved and revered Moula, Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin Saheb, 52nd Dai al-Mutlaq of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Qutbuddin Saheb revealed that Syedna Burhanuddin Saheb had anointed him as his successor on the 10th of December 1965, when he also anointed him as Mazoon, the spiritual position second only to the Dai. However, Shehzada Mufaddal bhaisaheb (second son of Syedna Burhanuddin Saheb RA), his brothers and other family members, took advantage of a severe debilitating stroke that affected Syedna

Jagdish Patil I.A.S. (Managing Director, MTDC) with Kavita Seth (Sufi Vocalist), Tejaswini Lonari (Marathi Actress) and Prachee Shah (Kathak Dance) during an event to announce the 2014 MTDC Elephanta Festival at Sahyadri Guest House on Tuesday. Dr. Abdeali Qutbuddin and Dr. Aziz Qutbuddin addressing media persons at Trade Centre, Bandra Kurla Complex, on Tuesday. Burhanuddin Saheb in London. On June 4, 2011, three days after Syedna was admitted to the hospital, they unilaterally made the false claim that Syedna Burhanuddin Saheb in that condition called his three other sons and loudly and repeatedly proclaimed his second son as his successor. To further this false claim and to create confusion in the community they brought Syedna in this critical condition to Mumbai 14 days later in an Air Ambulance and a ceremony was staged where thousands were present but Syedna could not clearly speak due to the effects of the stroke. We know this is a false claim and have adequate materials to show that this was not medically possible. These materials will be presented in the right forum and will expose the lies that were committed on the community. Syedna Qutbuddin has been in solemn prayer and has maintained the dignity of the 40-day mourning as per religious beliefs.” Dr. Abdeali Qutbuddin added, “Now that the period of mourning is over, in this time of confusion where a false claim has been made by the Shehzadas, it is time to come forward to tell the truth publicly. Concrete steps are being taken to ensure that the Dawoodi Bohra community and society at large understand the cor-

rect position. The Dawoodi Bohra community has been synonymous with the liberal and pluralistic practice of Islam and has contributed immensely to the social and economic landscape of India. In last few years as Syedna Burhanuddin was unwell his sons took control and have attempted to change the very fabric of the Dawoodi Bohras. People are being told not to think, to not educate their daughters, to not send their children to university, to publicly shame people who are astray, to donate large amounts without accountability. A community that has been integrated in the secular and pluralistic fabric of India for over a millennium is today being driven towards isolationism, casteism and radicalisation. Syedna Qutbuddin in the tradition of his predecessors Syedna Taher Saifuddin and Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin is making all efforts to safeguard the true and moderate identify of the community against the forces of extremism. He has been prepared for this challenging time to lead the community by his predecessors, the 51st Dai and the 52nd Dai. He is steadfast in his commitment to his Imam and to each and every one of his community members who are his spiritual children.

Punters may get Rs.2.25 for every rupee if they bet on BJP winning 225 seats. Bookies are willing to give Rs.1.80 on every rupee bet on chances of Congress winning even 85 seats. The odds of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi becoming country's PM is pegged at 0.47 paise over a rupee and the same for Congress' scion Rahul Gandhi is Rs.6.75. Higher the odds, lesser is the chance of those winning. Betting rate on Uttar Pradesh (UP) politician Mulayam Singh Yadav becoming PM is Rs.11 and it is Rs.16 for Mamata Banerjee. Taking a direct hit on the activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), bookies have discounted him for the simple reason that the new entrant in politics has no funds and lacks manpower to deal with the gargantuan task of managing poll booths and various such operations. There will be a strong fight for the rest of the three seats between several parties including the local parties like Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Ponder awhile… “A little neglect may breed mischief: For want of a nail the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for want of a horse the rider was lost.” – Benjamin Franklin

No chance for AAP in Mumbai T

oday when Arvind Kejriwal comes to Mumbai, he will find a hostile scenario unlike in Delhi where the Congress had become hugely unpopular. He did not have to worry about any other party there. In Mumbai, he could perhaps take on the Congress successfully but he will be faced with a strong opposition from two regional parties – the Shiv Sena and the MNS. His party workers must have already done some spade work in the city and assessed people's perceptions with regard to the Aam Aadmi Party. The Shiv Sena and the MNS are not just going to just watch his antics here but also are likely to take necessary steps to ensure he will make no headway. In the first place, Arvind Kejriwal does not know Marathi. He is an outsider who comes one fine morning and tries to grab some poll space. One can expect from him a list of urgent plans to improve Mumbai and help the common man. People in the city are not so dumb as to believe that this stranger can do something for them. He is likely to be a big flop in Mumbai. He was a big flop in Modi's Gujarat. He had prepared a list of facts and figures to show that Chief Minister Narendra Modi's claims regarding the growth and governance in Gujarat were false. The AAP's candidate from Gujarat does not seem to have a ghost of a chance to make it to the Lok Sabha. Over the last few months, it has become clear that Kejriwal is not himself an aam aadmi. There is always a big difference between what he says and does. For instance when he became chief minister, he asked for two large bungalows with five rooms each. Only a couple of days ago, this man who loses no opportunity to make scathing attack on politicians' luxury travel by plane, went himself by a private jet from Jaipur to Delhi.

SENSE of helplessness, or should I say hopelessness, has overwhelmed the Congress party. Its leader and mascot for the 2014 polls, Rahul Gandhi, has become almost invisible just as the last mile begins. Party circles are disturbed on several counts. One, the war room on Gurudwara Rakabganj Road, the nerve centre of the victorious 2009 campaign, seems to have been disbanded. Rahul and his team don’t go there anymore. They are closeted in Rahul’s bungalow on Tughlaq Lane these days. The rest of the party has no clue what they are up to or indeed, whether they are at all monitoring and managing the 2014 elections as they were supposed to. Two, Rahul has downsized his campaign significantly. He’s switched from mega rallies to smaller gatherings and road shows. Often, he puts in only a brief appearance. At his last meeting in Rajasthan, he spoke for just six minutes. And most of the time, the local Congress unit is not even informed that he’s on his way. Three, he’s virtually stopped meeting party leaders. A senior leader involved in negotiations for an alliance with a regional party complained to Rahul about not getting an appointment. The Gandhi scion politely told him to meet Sonia. He said he wanted to be among the people. The only communication between Team Rahul and the rest of the party is via SMS messages and emails. Occasionally, a telephone call goes out. Four, the expensive ad campaign featuring Rahul is on hold. Party insiders are filled with foreboding of a repeat of the 2009 campaign when Rahul suddenly withdrew from the front line halfway through the process and stopped the release of hoardings and posters featuring him. Ostensibly, the ad team has been asked to go back to the drawing board because the lines they came up with weren’t catchy. But Congress circles are wondering whether it’s a sign that Rahul has decided not to lead from the front. The BJP had hoped to make this a US presidential style contest between Rahul and Narendra Modi. Instead, Rahul seems to have moved out of the frame. Modi may look invincible because there’s no-one to chal-

lenge him nationally, but he’s lost his main talking point.

HE Rajya Sabha faces an unprecedented situation. As many as three of its members have switched parties mid-course, which means the RS secretariat may have to take the unprecedented step of moving to disqualify them. The three are: S.P. Baghel who left the BSP to join the BJP, former SP leader Amar Singh who recently joined the RLD and Ram

Battle between Generals?

F

ORMER army chief V.K. Singh may have joined the BJP but he seems to be having trouble getting the constituency of his choice. He wants Bhiwani in Haryana, where he comes from. But the BJP is insisting that he contest from Jhunjunu in Rajasthan. The argument that’s being put forward is that Jhunjunu has a huge voter segment of army and ex-army people and a former army chief would be an instant hit. The trouble is that Jhunjunu also has a strong Jat presence and Singh is a Rajput. But the bigger problem apparently is that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to field a former army man as well, Lt. General Raj Kadyan, who is a known and outspoken critic of Singh. If Singh agrees to the BJP’s proposition, Jhunjunu will see an interesting battle between two retired generals. There’s worse news for Singh. The BJP has never ever won Jhunjunu.

Arati R. Jerath Kirpal Yadav who has left RJD and is slated to join the BJP. Yadav threw RS secretariat officials into a tizzy by asking whether he could “recondition” himself after quitting RJD. After bemused officials figured out what he meant by the word recondition, they told him that he faced disqualification if he quit. Yadav promptly opened negotiations with both JD(U) and BJP and is believed to have swung a Lok Sabha ticket from Patliputra from the latter. Singh escaped disqualification a couple of years ago because he was expelled by the SP and the RS decided to allow him to retain his membership of the House as an unattached member. But now that he has joined another party, he no longer enjoys that immunity. The churn is breathtaking. Three familiar faces could well be missing when the RS meets again after the polls. And who knows

RSS in action

T

HE RSS has decided to pull out the stops to try and help Narendra Modi win over 200 seats in the upcoming polls. It has pressed more than 3,000 swayamsevaks into action, one for every assembly constituency across the country. Each has been appointed co-ordinator for the constituency and his job is to oversee the election management on behalf of the candidate. The swayamsevaks are distributing pamphlets, doing door-to-door campaigns and picking out suitable people for booth management on polling day. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has set targets for each co-ordinator. He wants at least three managers for each polling booth. BJP circles are taken aback by the extent of RSS involvement in the election. One source said that he has never seen the RSS do such minute management. The question that’s being asked now is: what price will the RSS demand from Modi if he does become PM?

The many origins of Lent L

ent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. In the desire to renew the liturgical practices of the Church, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican Council II stated, "The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent -the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, and penance -- should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and in liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God's word more frequently and devote more time to prayer". The word Lent itself is derived from the AngloSaxon words lencten, meaning 'Spring,' and lenctentid, which literally means not only 'Springtide' but also was the word for 'March,' the month in which the majority of Lent falls. Did the Church always have this time before Easter? Since the earliest times of the Church, there is evidence of some kind of Lenten preparation for Easter. For instance, St. Irenaeus wrote to Pope St. Victor I, commenting on the celebration of Easter and the differences between practices in the East and the West: "The dispute is not only about the day, but also about the actual character of the fast. Some think that they ought to fast for one day, some for two, others for still more; some make their 'day' last 40 hours on end. Such variation in

the observance did not originate in our own day, but very much earlier, in the time of our forefathers". (Eusebius, History of the Church, V, 24). When Rufinus translated this passage from Greek into Latin, the punctuation made between "40" and "hours" made the meaning to appear to be "40 days, twentyfour hours a day." The importance of the passage, nevertheless, remains that since the time of "our forefathers" -- always an expression for the apostles -- a 40-day period of Lenten preparation existed. However, the actual practices and duration of Lent were still

MATTER & SPIRIT not homogenous throughout the Church. Lent becomes more regularised after the legalisation of Christianity in A.D. 313. The Council of Nicea, in its disciplinary canons, noted that two provincial synods should be held each year, "one before the 40 days of Lent." St. Athanasius in his 'Festal Letters' implored his congregation to make a 40-day fast prior to the more intense fasting of Holy Week. St. Cyril of Jerusalem in his Catechectical Lectures, which are the paradigm for our current RCIA programs, had 18 pre-baptismal instructions given to the catechumens during Lent. St. Cyril of Alexandria in his series of 'Festal Letters' also noted the practices and duration of Lent, emphasising the 40-day period of fasting. Finally, Pope St. Leo preached that the

faithful must "fulfill with their fasts the Apostolic institution of the 40 days," again noting the apostolic origins of Lent. One can safely conclude that by the end of the fourth century, the 40-day period of Easter preparation known as Lent existed, and that prayer and fasting constituted its primary spiritual exercises. Of course, the number "40" has always had special spiritual significance regarding preparation. On Mount Sinai, preparing to receive the Ten Commandments, "Moses stayed there with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights, without eating any food or drinking any water". Elijah walked "40 days and 40 nights" to the mountain of the Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Sinai). Most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for "40 days and 40 nights" in the desert before He began His public ministry. Once the 40 days of Lent were established, the next development concerned how much fasting was to be done. In Jerusalem, for instance, people fasted for 40 days, Monday through Friday, but not on Saturday or Sunday, thereby making Lent last for eight weeks. In Rome and in the West, people fasted for six weeks, Monday through Saturday, thereby making Lent last for six weeks. Eventually, the practice prevailed of fasting for six days a week over the course of six weeks, and Ash Wednesday was instituted to bring the number of fast days before Easter to 40. – Fr. William Saunders

Nandan Nilekani: Worthy candidate, wrong party! THERE cannot be a more worthy candidate in the coming Parliamentary elections than ex-Infosys chief Nandan Nilekani but unfortunately he is fighting on a wrong Party ticket as the fate of Congress looks gloomy even before the elections have begun with exit polls even forecasting the worst ever defeat for the government in power. In fact this should have been done long back, before our series with the South Africans. This man is mostly dumb and does not communicate with his players and is certainly not in the same class as of John Wright or Gary Kirsten. A chance to fly yourself

CITY

n the last one month since a flight simulation facility opened at Phoenix Marketcity in Kurla, nearly 600 people have tried their hand in flying a Boeing 737, a Cessna 172 or a fighter jet. And it is not surprising that the fighter jet wins over the other two, making it very apparent that lots of men remain boys with a dream at the centre of their hearts, to be a “fighter pilot”!Flight 4 Fantasy is an opportunity to experience a flight in a fixed simulator in a controlled and relaxed environment. But the audio and visual system is good enough to ensure that you don't get too relaxed.Claimed to be the country's first flight simulator open to the public in Bengaluru in 2012, this is the company's second branch, and the flight experience is realistic enough to cautiously enthuse those who have always wondered what it must be to fly an airliner..The ADC went there to experience it as well, thinking it was just another video game. Two cockpit-replicas of small planes – the fighter jet and a Cessna were visible in a showroom space. The cockpit of the Boeing was inside, and in each case, staff in “airline uniforms” waited beside the doors to make the experience more enjoyable and authentic. Our earlier experience of a simulator was of sailing a Delhi class warship used to train Indian Navy sailors and officers. It was gigantic and floating (not-fixed), with movements that simulated tides, so we were confident that this experience would not be too much to handle. The Captain briefed us on various digital clocks on the control panel, including a primary flight display (PFD), mode control panel (MCP), navigation

The engines roared to life and wheels started moving. The Co-pilot explained the rule of gravity and in-

structed us to attain a speed of 260km/hr to take off. We did. Then we relaxed, because apparently this is the toughest task.An alarm sounded. Apparently, already we were flying into the Alps so the copilot asked for suggestions to save us all from crashing. When we felt everything was alright, we put the flight on auto pilot mode and comfortably listened to the co-pilot explaining the function of Primary Flight Display which shows airspeed, altitude, heading and vertical speed. Then he explained the Navigation Display (ND) which overlays information regarding aircraft's current route plan, weather information, air traffic and restricted air space. Finally, he explained the Control Panel that gives information about maps and compass. After half an hour, we chose to land at Zurich airport manually. We are afraid it was a rather hard landing but it was safe. Error of judgement on our part.It was extremely realistic experience as simulator was replica of cockpit and actual map of airport and terrain including Alps mountains with full topography details. But it was a wonderful experience especially since no-one died.Others have already discovered the joys of simulated piloting. Among them is Vivek Taylor, an instructor in Australia who flies small planes and who is here on holiday. “It was a great experience and awesome equipment”, he said, adding that he would be back.Celebrity actor Arjan Bajwa who had taken experience of the flight wrote in the feedback: “Amazing experience and please open one in western suburbs.”

he most important aspect about student exchange programmes is that they offer a distinct and unparallel learning experience for students going beyond their curriculum. While industrial visits and other educational trips sponsored by colleges and institutions are an integral part of students’ educational curve, exchange programmes offer them an opportunity to see and understand how their peers and contemporaries at other institutions get to learn similar concepts. Many thus assume that student exchange programmes are only effective when conducted with an international university. This is definitely not the case. It is quite necessary to understand that the viability and success of student exchange programmes doesn’t depend on going abroad to a foreign varsity but is also about going to institutions within India as well. According to Prof. Asha Gala, Head of Department, Economics, SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, exchange programmes bridge the gap between the sociocultural diversity that exists across the length and breadth of the country. “Students get exposed to so many variations in culture, background and language. These aspects cannot be replicated within a classroom and as such indigenous exchange programmes within institutions across India are as important as international universities’ oriented exchange programs are,” she explains. Whilst speaking of socio-cultural background differences, it is also essential to pinpoint the aspect of urban and rural educational differences. According to Prof. Gala who’s conducted her share of student exchange programmes in varied urban and rural colleges across India, it often emerges that certain semi-urban and rural colleges seem to be equipped with better space and area allotment as compared to some of the top-colleges within metropolitan cities. “Talking of infrastructural facilities, there have been many instances where I have been pleasantly surprised by the facili-

Avinash Somanathan, Third Year Engineering Student, VESIT “In terms of engineering, exchange programmes are mainly conducted at the doctoral level and as such doctoral studies’ candidates from India get to understand how the world is going about in research activities. Student exchange programmes also help students to get more lucrative offers in the field of their interest. Moreover, in addition, the whole experience is quite challenging as students get to go beyond their comfort zone to learn important educational aspects. But though there are these advantages, personally, I believe that student exchange programmes need to be conducted for project work rather than for learning purposes. This will help students to gain knowledge on a more practical level rather than on a theoretical level.”

Opportunities, when lacking forcing students from institutes in top-tiered cities to complain about,” she clarifies. Apart from these facets, opportunities to learn and imbibe from the different teaching methodologies are yet another advantage that students stand to get from exchange programmes. And this aspect of learning from different teaching techniques is not restricted to students but extends to teachers and professors as well. And while it is a lesserknown fact, it’s nonetheless true that there are indeed several such exchange programmes conducted by various varsities focusing towards enriching the existing qualitative availability of professors. Speaking of exchange programmes and prejudices, a recently released list of the world’s top colleges has given way to many questions being raised about the qualitative stan-

FIRM INTEREST IN BANKING

I am currently studying in TYBcom, Mumbai University. I’m interested in the field of Banking. I have applied for the post of a clerk job in Indian Bank and am also pursuing my Diploma in Banking from Indian Institute of Banking and Finance. Is this diploma useful? Am I going on the right track? —Zenia Acharya

You are certainly on the right track. Pursuing a course related to a banking field will be useful provided you get a job in the same field [or a related field] and will also be able to apply the theory studied in day-to-day working. Most importantly keeping yourself updated and upgraded is an effective tool for survival in the job market.

I am currently pursuing second year Engineering. I am interested in studying Chartered Accountancy after completing BE. I have done my HSC in Science. Am I eligible for CA CPT entrance test? Should I join classes for CPT from now? —Achill Nair You are eligible to appear for the CPT. Joining classes would be helpful as presently you are studying a course totally unrelated to the field of accounts and finance. Please identify the reasons of choosing a different career path and also bear in mind that the CA is a demanding course and will require focus where the entry to the course is easy, but the exit [given the difficulty levels] is quite a challenge for many. So think well before taking the plunge.

I am a BMS graduate. What other post graduation fields are available for me other than MMS or MBA? —Ricky Other than management studies, you can opt for post-graduation studies in the field of Humanities, Social Work, Law, Teaching, Special Education, Library Science, Journalism, Advertising, Films and Broadcasting, Travel and Tourism, Hospitality and so on. You can even opt for appearing for competitive exams like State/Central Civil Services, Defence Services, Banks, Financial Institutions, Railways and so on. Your scope depends on your abilities. dards the top-ranked Indian institutes and the sustained presence of student exchange programmes in the wake of such a development. Prof. Gala however explains that the rankings of Indian institutes wouldn’t impact much on the student exchange programmes. She states, “Rankings are based on certain criteria which may not be applicable to all regions in the world. As such rankings of institutes aren’t an indicator of the best seat of knowledge.” She elaborates by giving the example of how studentteacher ratio in a country like India could affect its ranking in the global platform on account of the country’s large population. While it still remains to be seen about the continuity and sustainability of global student exchange programmes, it can’t be denied that within the country itself the concept will find a lot of takers considering the amount of educational-oriented development that every region in India can attest to.

unique ‘Art Appreciation’ exhibition was held on March 11 at MET Rishikul Vidyalaya (MRV). This was not just a regular display of artwork. In fact, the exhibition was a window to the ancient cave paintings around the world, which were showcased in modern light. Students from Grade III to Grade VIII had the rare opportunity to explore their imagination and express their creativity in an exceptional style. At first, the students were exposed to a few prominent forms of cave paintings across the globe through observation, analysis and self-exploration. They then compared the various forms of art and presented their understandings of the same. Finally, the students converted their learnings to current scenarios. They presented

ancient paintings in contemporary form by incorporating modern elements into the artwork. For instance, world famous monuments were recreated through Warli Art; cave paintings from the Bimbetka caves in India, Paleolithic cave paintings from the Lascaux caves in France and Neolithic pictographs from the caves of Egypt were emulated into modern forms and displayed. Parents and visitors alike were truly amazed at the extraordinary range of talent displayed by the children. Through this programme, MRV aims to win the International School Award (ISA), a benchmarking project by the British Council that credits schools as having an outstanding level of support for nurturing global citizenship amongst the youth.

Want to study law in the UK

My daughter is currently studying through IGCSE in Mumbai and wishes to continue her A Levels abroad. She has a UK citizenship. I would like to know of High Schools in Leicester for the Sixth Form. —Rupali Some of the reputed schools in Leicester that your daughter can choose from are The Leicester High School for Girls, English Martyrs Catholic School, The Leicestershire Montessori Preparatory School, the Uppingham School and the Ashby School. All of these schools have A-Levels. The Uppingham School has a boarding school too. The rest are day schools. Since you have mentioned that your daughter has a UK citizenship, she could avail of the scholarships and bursaries that the respective schools may have provisions for. The standard requirements for gaining entry into these schools are the evaluation of the GCSE grades, entrance examinations and entrance interview to gauge capability and interest. The requirements would vary from school to school. In addition, on an average, the annual day school fees is approximately £21000 and approximately £31000 for the boarding school. If your daughter is involved in extra curriculars like music, art, etc. she could avail of these scholarships too in certain schools. My son wants to pursue his undergraduate at Cornell University. I have heard of the Tata Scholarship for Indian students. Could you provide me information on the scholarship and the application procedure for the same. —Geet The TATA Scholarship has been introduced to provide financial aid for undergraduate Indian students. As your son is interested in practising law in the UK, it is a good choice to study law in the UK. For an IB score of 38, there are many good colleges like LSE, UCL, Durham, Warwick, Nottingham University, The University of Bristol Law School and the Glasgow University. These colleges are well-known for their law courses. They have stringent entry requirements too. Colleges like LSE, UCL and Durham expect students applying to their Law courses to appear for LNAT. LNAT is a Law Aptitude Test that tests for the student’s aptitude and not the legal knowledge. It measures the verbal reasoning skills of an individual. For more information on LNAT you could visit their official website. These colleges expect an IELTS score of seven on an average in all their components. UCL however expects a score of 7.5 overall and 6.5 in each of their components. LSE also has a test on mathematics, an essay and interview which is on invitation. The duration of this course at UCL and Glasgow is for four years while at LSE, Durham, Warwick and The Nottingham University it is for three years.

Envy–the deadliest sin

lways mistaken for jealously, envy is one of those sins that is according to me the deadliest. Envy is something that crawls into us and lives within just like a parasite. A parasite that keeps growing and stays there till it eats you up. Envy is the want, the desire for something that one can't attain. It's the want of attaining superficial things that we can't achieve. The reason that you can't have it doesn't matter, but that's the same thing that makes you want to have more and more of it. That want till a certain extent is good but then it kills you and no one else. It'll affect you more than anyone. The world will never care about

what's happening inside your tiny little head. Our envy always lasts longer than the happiness of those we envy. So we shouldn't envy, we should overcome it. Envy for everyone can be different things but in the end it's all the same. It rots their souls, allowing them to justify their greed until they believe these to be virtues. Such people are convinced that the doors of heaven will be opened only to poor wretches like themselves who go through life without leaving any trace but their threadbare attempts to belittle others and to exclude – and destroy if possible – those who, by the simple fact of their existence, show up their own poorness of spirit, mind, and guts. Blessed be the one at whom the fools bark, because his soul will never belong to them.

ow do we teach little ones about the cultures and festivals celebrated in India and abroad? Giving them technical information will not help with the real picture, in that case getting them involved works wonders and they get hands-on information which makes it easy to grasp the concept. Working on these lines, Oxford

Jiggly kids of Oxford International School provided the children a platform to celebrate harvest festivals of India and festivals of countries like UAE, UK, Africa and Kenya. Children from nursery to senior KG started their preparations from the month of December. They made UAE pot paintings and flag paintings along with dates, finger puppets, Africa and Kenya

handkerchief paintings along with Yam hand puppets, Warli paintings from Maharashtra, Gujarat bandhani prints on a dupatta, Rajasthan bedsheet prints, UK hat designs and pumpkin masks and project work of each of the Indian states and countries. The little wonders also prepared speeches on the harvest festival which were well articulated. The presentation of the festival was appealingly displayed by the art teachers. Finally, children dressed up in costumes representing different countries, danced to the ever popular harvest festival song ‘Mere desh ki dharti’, welcoming their parents and holding the flags of each of the country and placards of the harvested crop in each of these countries. The exhibition had a great impact on the children as they grasped the concept, the language, the tradition, the harvest festival and cultures of countries like UAE, UK, India, Africa and Kenya.

This movie is a depiction of brilliance in acting and the truths women deal with in some way or the other in their life. ‘Queen’ is not only a movie, it is a part of the day-to-day life story of Maria Khatri either you or me. This is one of those movies that you connect so well with. A girl who is struggling with her pre-marital breakup, her childhood love’s notion that she is not worthy enough of getting married to, a stereotypical Punjabi family, her wish to go on a lonely honeymoon to France (her dream forever and for which she has been saving her earnings), a friendship of the most unexpected type, it is a profound journey that changes a woman’s life. Is this the right career for me? Hackers are always in search of finding new ways to break into secured systems. Thus as an IT security professional or Ethical Hacker, you will phone calls; writing reports and case notes; and drafting letters to other professionals; maintaining arts-based therapeutic space and materials. I didn’t have to make any major investments other than the course fee. Time and mental and physical energy invested has helped nourish the whole process. One can very well earn his/her bread and butter by living through this profession. However, dreaming to materialise the desires beyond that doesn’t fit well in a setting like this of a social sector. There is no count on years. It all depends on how well; effectively and ethically you practice your profession. As an established professional also, one can earn depending on a setting he/she is working in. In a corporate setting, if one works as a consultant one can earn lavishly whereas working at a very grassroot level in a social setting doesn’t feed you that well in terms of monetary acquisitions. Thus, considering the present trends it is possible to earn really well through diverse schemes and involvement of corporate as well, as a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) venture. Job satisfaction is the biggest advantage in this field. However, every field has its challenges with solutions and a scope for change which helps in overcoming them. Thus, there is nothing that is registered in my head which I see as a difficulty. As it is an ongoing process it mends itself within that time and space. With today’s stress and lifestyle patterns there is a growing need for psychologists. The need arises not only at the grass-root level but even in cities and corporate houses. In fact, many organisations now find the need and hire a psychologist as their staff to help their employees cope with various types of mental health issues and problems. If someone wishes to be a part of this prounderstanding the feelings or temperament fession, it is important to take appropriate of others; constructively challenging the training and enter this profession with that behavior and attitude of clients; planning, feeling of understanding and awareness. Pursuing certifications in IT security can be of great help in your career growth. What are the job avenues? Use of internet is increasing worldwide, and so is the increase in cyber-crime. Thus, IT system security professionals and ethical hackers have become an integral part of the IT industry. You may find employment as an IT security expert in government and private organisations. Majority of the hiring is done by IT companies. But these days, banks, financial institutions, hotels, airlines, retail and e-commerce firms, online and social media companies, defence and military agencies, forensic and investigative agencies also directly hire security administrators. How much will I earn? As a fresher, you may start with a salary of around Rs.2.5 lakh to Rs.4 lakh per annum. After gaining a few years of experience and passing few IT certifications in security, you may earn between Rs.6 lakh to Rs.10 lakh per annum. After good work experience, you could also work as an independent security consultant for organisations. www.careernurturer.com

Raising much needed awareness

O

n the special occasion of International Women’s Day, students of Rotaract Club of H.R. College planned a Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign in one of the most populous regions in Mumbai – a local train. This historic 365th Women’s Day, they believed in bringing health issues to the forefront. Cervical Cancer is one of the only types of cancers that one can get vaccinated against. They organised a small session on cervical cancer inside the ladies’ compartment of each train at the hub of Mumbai – Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Posters and banners decoding this lesser-known cancer were shown to all the ladies. Cervical Cancer is a silent killer. Around 75

per cent of the women don’t even know about this disease. During the speaking sessions, women were told about the causes and preventions, and how deadly it can be, if not dealt with properly. Women are the pride of a nation and it’s our duty to protect them, was the message that the organisers put across. “This was a full-fledged awareness campaign. It’s a great feeling to spread awareness about this deadly disease; today we took a step towards women empowerment and safety. Ladies were amazed about this disease and thanked us for this awareness campaign. There is no better feeling than your event being successful,”said Trividha Mehra, one of the organisers. Thanks to the efforts of the young turks, hopefully a lot of women will head to their nearest doctor to find out about vaccinations and learn more about this silent killer.

The proportion of UPSC aspirants from non-metro towns is comparatively more than those of metro cites. But seeing the success of this exam which is very low, are there any options available to the aspirants who come from small towns and have very less job opportunities contradictory to those in cities if they do not clear this exam? Broadly speaking, the syllabus and core content of UPSC is too broad and covers almost all the public service exams more or less. Moreover, the general studies awareness brought up during the preparation of UPSC is more than enough for any public service exam at state level or any other exam conducted in India. So these students should try in state services where many time the age limit is also higher or other graduate level administrative exams like SSC etc. The second option for these students is that they can share and utilise their experience of learning and preparation of UPSC for the other aspirants in their own town in a visionary way. They can get into parallel coaching institutes and thus share the knowledge and ideas and also the mistakes to be avoided by further aspiring students. The best way to utilise their knowledge is to enter into the noble job of teaching and one can explore a career in teaching at any level from schools to colleges. Moreover pursuing your graduate degree is also the way forward. You see both – civil service aspirants and the successful civil servants at LBSNAA. So do you think that there are some inbuilt qualities which are required to clear this exam? Or can they be developed once you clear this exam during training? Well, there is nothing like in-built

K.M. Pathi, author of ‘Public Administration Workbook,’ faculty at IIIT Delhi, visiting faculty at Lal Bahadur Shashrti National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), and other state training institutions, is now recognised as one of the top speakers on the governance system. He shares some insights into preparing for UPSC exams and how one can get into the Civil Services

qualities. According to me, any quality, good or bad can be developed in and that’s what the training institutes are for. Not only in civil services but in any job or field you work, the qualities required for you to work there can be developed. So there is no need to be self-evaluative about this ‘quality’ thing. Number of private institutes and their fees are increasing day by day. How much of a role do these institutions play in clearing UPSC? Let me tell you a general thing about any institution and about any exam. ‘An institution is no guarantee of success’. No institute will give a guarantee of clearing any exam and so it is true about this exam too. Institutes can show you direction, it’s up to you whether you are going to walk on it or not. The institute will provide you with wings, but it depends on whether the UPSC aspirants are ready to take wings and fly. The number of attempts for UPSC just increased by two. According to many experts, this will be affecting the effectiveness of the service the officers render after coming into service late. Is it true? No, efficiency in civil service will never be compromised. The length, breadth and depth of this exam is so vast that when one clears the exam,

<< K.M. Pathi

it will be totally wrong to say that efficiency will be at risk. Being a trainee at LBSNAA, from the trainee perspective there is nothing like that and any officer once trained tries his/her best not to compromise it. What do you think is the right stage to start preparing for this exam? During graduation or after completing? Should one start preparing children from their school days? According to me, ideally preparing from the last year of your graduation

is the best way to start. Like that you have already started to gain the maturity for the exam and is the best time for students also to learn about it. Moreover, there is a misconception that when you are preparing for civil services you need to take a gap of one or two years and then you can qualify for it. I have seen students who start preparing for this exam at the end of the examination and give it without taking a break and they have been successful. So surely it’s not about the quantity of time, it’s the quality of time that matters. And

to add to this ‘Systematic Planning’ of syllabus is what fetches success. Last year, the UPSC committee added one more GS paper ‘Ethics’ though it was there in the Indian governance from the past few years. But what followed was the addition of ‘Emotional Intelligence’– being intelligent about your emotions and appraising emotions from situations and using them for reasoning is in Indian Governance. Do you think it is quite a late entry in Indian Governance as compared to the western world where it is known since 1991? Yes, it’s quite a late entrant. But what can we say ‘better late than never’. Because it is very essential for public servants to be emotionally stable than emotionally unsound. Emotions are responses co-ordinated to changes in the environment that involve specific subjective experience, activating relevant cognitions while intelligence we all know is the ability that can be learned and be used for problem solving. But seeing the changing trend not only in India but in the world it is very important for a public servant not only to be physically and intellectually competent but also emotionally competent to appraise any situation properly in governance.

I would invest because investments give you a chance to increase their value. Youngsters should save if they want to buy something and not ask their parents. —Sagar Thiyar, Student I prefer to invest. Saving is very important because it helps you in the time of crisis. Another good thing about saving is you can get an easier access to your money rather than through investments. I come home daily, only to a wagging tail jumping with joy at my doorstep and that never fails to make my day. As I write this article, I am brought to the brim of tears as I recall the time, my fondness for my dog grew. I had fractured my foot and was lying in bed when my dog jumped on

the bed, tucked her tail between her legs and slept by my side giving me no space at all. The following morning the dog walker came to take her for a walk and she refused to get off the bed. She controlled her bladder which is quite funny considering the fact that she wasn’t potty trained. However, that moment I knew she was going to be there for me no matter what. Whoever said that diamonds are a girl’s best friends never really owned a dog!

DO YOU SAVE AND INVEST?

Saving and investing is an important habit to cultivate for everyone. We asked city youngsters about their investment habits and whether they actually find it important and necessary. Here's what they had to say...

e is your friend, your partner, your defender, and your dog. You are his life, his love, and his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion and that is why it is said that dogs are man’s best friends. A dog is a great pet to have because it is good for your health, they can make for good guards, and they provide you with the emotional stimulus you need. They carry positive vibes wherever they go. Because exercise is good for stress management and overall health, owning a dog can be credited with increasing these benefits. Pets can help with social support. When you’re out walking, having a dog with you can make you more approachable and give people a reason to stop and talk to you, increasing the number of people you meet, giving you an opportunity to increase your network of friends and acquaintances. Dogs are great protectors. Take a walk in the park with your dog and watch what happens if another person or animal threatens you, even playfully. Your dog may well be in the attacker’s face, fangs bared, in a courageous act of self-sacrifice to protect you. Your dog may guard your house when you are asleep or away. This unbound is also about exploring possibilities of transcendence, the desire to see the unseen through the mind's eye. There is always an inclination to explore the real core. The artist Sajal Kanti Mitra has had an eventful journey through 25 years. He has held numerous art exhibitions in different parts of the country. One thing is clear: He works in freedom, builds image after seing through his mind's eye. The exhibition closed yesterday at the Jehangir Art Gallery.

Exports Shrink, But Trade Balance Improves

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014

NEWS FLASH

RBI to announce the First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2014-15 on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 Metal stocks plunge on worries over China slowdown Exports dip 3.67% to $25.6 bn in Feb NMDC's April-February sales up 17% to 27.43 million tonnes Gold, silver imports dip 71.4% to $1.63 billion in February.

CAD expected to drop to its lowest level in six years, says Crisil Research

By A Business Reporter

I

ndia's merchandise trade deficit shrank further in February 2014 to US$ 8.1 billion from US$ 9.9 billion in January . The improvement came about despite the fall in exports, as the compression in imports remained sharp. Ending a 7month positive streak, exports in February fell by 0.7%, seasonally adjusted, compared to the last month and were lower by 3.7% y-o-y. The fall in part is explained by a stronger base effect in the month. However, even after stripping out the effect of a strong base, export growth was negative in February. This might have been driven by a continued fall in the value of petroleum exports, as crude oil prices av-

eraged lower at nearly US$109 per barrel in February as compared to US$116 per barrel at the same time last year. Imports recorded the sixth consecutive month of double digit contraction (fell by 17.1% y-o-y) in February. This contraction was driven by weak domestic demand and restrictions on gold imports that steepened the fall in non-oil imports to 24.5% y-o-y. The fall in oil imports slowed to 3.1% from 10.1% seen last month. And now CAD is expected to drop to its lowest level in six years. Says Crisil Research “We expect CAD to print 2.0% of GDP in 2013-14, the lowest since 2007-08, compared to 4.8% last year. Merchandise trade deficit for April-February 2013-14 is

India’s Foreign Trade: February, 2014

at $128.1 billion as compared to $179.9 billion in 2012-13. The sharp contraction in imports in this fiscal has been the primary factor that has contained the trade deficit. Going forward, exports are expected to pick up as growth in India’s export markets improve and petroleum exports, which have been muted since November, bounce back. “ Crisil expects CAD to rise to 2.7% of GDP in 2014-15. After double digit contraction this year, import growth is expected to pick up. Gold imports will begin to rise once the restrictions on them are relaxed, and imports of oil, consumption and investment goods will pick up as GDP growth improves, resulting in a higher CAD in the next fiscal.

Law Ministry To Opine On BP, Niko Status In RIL Arbitration By A Business Reporter

T

he Oil Ministry has sought legal opinion to ascertain if British energy giant BP and Canada's Niko are part of the arbitration initiated by their partner Reliance Industries against the government levying penalties for KG-D6 gas production falling short of target. The near-doubling of gas prices to USD 8 per million British thermal units that will kick in from next month will accrue to all producers in the country. However, in the case of the main fields in the KG-D6 block, it would be conditional upon RIL furnishing a bank guarantee equivalent to the incremental revenue it will get from the new rates. If

it is proved that the company deliberately produced less gas from the D1&D3 fields in KG-D6, the bank guarantee will be encashed, depriving RIL of the incremental revenue. Sources said while RIL agreed to the condition, the exploration division of the Oil Ministry raised issues about BP and Niko Resources, which together hold 40 per cent in the KG-D6 block. It felt since the Cabinet stipulation was for the contractor that had initiated arbitration, a bank guarantee cannot be taken from BP and Niko, which were not part of the 2012 arbitration notice slapped on the government. To break the impasse, BP and Niko separately wrote to the ministry, saying that RIL, in filing the ar-

Women Owned Enterprises Face Financing Disadvantage By A Business Reporter

"A

ccess to financing is an important factor for women-owned businesses to become viable in today’s economic climate. This segment is a significant market opportunity for banks in India, and globally, as women entrepreneurs are proven to be excellent long-term clients for banks," says Jennifer Isern, IFC Manager for Access to Finance Advisory. However, financial institutions meet only 27% of the financing demand of women-owned micro, small and medium enterprises in India, says IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, in a just released a study. The study titled Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Finance: Improving Access to Finance for Women-owned Businesses in India, undertaken by IFC in partnership with the government of Japan, estimates that of the total financing demand of $158 billion (Indian rupees 8.68 trillion) for women-owned businesses, formal sources are able to channel only $42 billion (Indian rupees 2.31 trillion). This leaves a

significant gap of $116 billion (Indian rupees 6.42 trillion) that financial institutions can meet through products and services tailored for women entrepreneurs. There are an estimated 3 million women-owned enterprises across industries, representing about 10% of all micro, small, and medium enterprises in India and employing over 8 million people. The study notes that there is sound empirical evidence, particularly from developed economies, that women borrowers have stronger repayment history and present greater potential for cross sales compared to male entrepreneurs, making them roughly twice as profitable for banks as a consumer segment. The study recommends that banks can serve more women by lending to the services sector; about 80% of women entrepreneurs run businesses focused on services. Historically, banks have funded manufacturing enterprises, and relied heavily on collaterals to give credit, to the disadvantage of womenowned enterprises.

bitration notice, had acted as an operator representing the interests of all the KG-D6 constituents and they were part of the arbitration. BP and Niko further stated that as a contractor to the production sharing contract (PSC) they are party to the arbitration and RIL has represented them as per the PSC and JOA, sources said. Sources said the ministry has now sought legal opinion to ascertain if BP and Niko can become part of the arbitration with such letters. RIL and BP say the decline in current D1&D3 output to a 10th of the previously projected 80 million standard cubic meters per day was purely because of unanticipated geological complexities such as a drop in reservoir pressure and ingress of water and sand. RIL had dragged the ministry to arbitration last year, saying the contract does not provide for levy of a USD 1.8 billion penalty for output not being in line with projected production profile.

EXPORTS (including re-exports) Exports during February, 2014 were valued at US $ 25688.94 million (Rs.159858.16 crore) which was 3.67 % lower in Dollar terms (11.47 % higher in Rupee terms) than the level of US $ 26668.77 million (Rs. 143407.85 crore) during February, 2013. Cumulative value of exports for the period April-February 2013 -14 was US $ 282777.02 million (Rs 1712422.41 crore) as against US $ 269859.25 million (Rs 1468159.38 crore) registering a growth of 4.79 % in Dollar terms and growth of 16.64 % in Rupee terms over the same period last year. Cumulative value of imports for the period AprilFebruary, 2013-14 was US $ 410863.28 million (Rs. 2474626.88 crore) as against US $ 449788.89 million (Rs. 2446387.26 crore) registering a negative growth of 8.65 % in Dollar terms and growth of 1.15 % in Rupee terms over the same period last year.

PUJARA TURNS TO BOWLING IN NETS FOR ODI SELECTION SPORTS

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014

By Sabi Hussain

N

EW DELHI: As his quest to find a permanent spot in India's One-day side continues, Cheteshwar Pujara has also started bowling in order to fit the bill for ODI selection and said a good showing in IPL could see him on the plane to Australia and New Zealand for next year's World Cup. "I have also started bowling in nets so that I can contribute as a part-time bowler. I want to help my team with part-time bowling if the captain wants me to. I am looking to bring improvement in my game, most important being playing on the rise. I am targeting specific areas, which include analysis of my batting and what mistakes I am committing in the middle. It will help me in the longer run," Pujara said. Pujara said he is also looking forward to the upcoming IPL."If I can prove myself in the IPL, I am confident that I can get success in ODIs too. I had played a couple of good innings for my last franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore which proved that I have the talent to excel in the shortest format also. It's all about getting more opportunities. I am looking forward to have a successful IPL," the middle-order batsman said. Ever since making his debut in the 50-over format against Zimbabwe last year in August, Pujara has only played two ODIs in the limited opportunities he has got in the 50-over format and his non-inclusion for the dead Asia Cup rubber against Afghanistan left many flabbergasted. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed the team management for not experimenting with the playing XI by including

India can repeat 2007 performance at this World T20: Joginder N EW DELHI: India can rely on their spinners to reclaim the World Twenty20 title, says Joginder Sharma, the hero of country's win against Pakistan in the inaugural edition's final. After a terrible road accident in 2011, Sharma returned to domestic action last year and is now endeavouring to make his way into the Indian team. India have struggled in the competition after success in 2007 but the Haryana allrounder feels now is the chance to reclaim the trophy. "You can't predict results in T20s but we have an experienced line up. We have strong batting and it is a good fielding unit as

Pujara and medium pacer Ishwar Pandey in the match against Afghanistan, and even went on to say that the fear of reserve players succeeding over "current favourites" prompted the management to play the same team. The Indian batsmen were found wanting against quality pace attacks in South Africa and New Zealand, but the team management decided not to tinker with the 'balanced' side. Pujara has all the makings of becoming one of India's most consistent players in both forms of the game, provided he gets the opportunity to showcase his batting prowess in the ODI format, too. He averages 55 in List A matches and his impressive strike rate resulted in many double and triple hundreds. His solid performance in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy 2012-13, where he hit two hundreds and a fifty in three innings, led to his call-up for India's tour of Zimbabwe, but the Saurashtra batsman didn't get enough opportunities thereafter. With the focus on building the team for next year's World Cup in Australia-New Zealand, Pujara

OLKATA: Pacers Mohammed Shami and Ashok Dinda shared seven wickets between them to trigger a collapse that saw Bengal beat Tamil Nadu by 77 runs and storm into the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare one-day cricket tournament at the floodlit Eden Gardens. Defending a paltry 168, Shami (4/25) and Dinda (3/13) ripped apart Tamil Nadu top order with some charged up bowling to reduce the visitors to 25 for five in the 10th over and eventually bundle out Tamil Nadu for 90 in 33.5 overs. Dinda gave the Bengal their first breakthrough by seeing off S Anirudha, who edged to second slip. Shami then joined the party with wickets of Baba Aparajith (12) and Subramaniam Badrinath (0) in

well. But since the matches will be in Bangladesh, our spinners can play a big role there. We have a good spin attack knows that he has limited time on his hand."It's all about getting more and more opportunities. I have the ability to perform in all three formats of the game," he said. Pujara has become a permanent fixture of India's Test side, succeeding Rahul Dravid at No.3. He has an outstanding Test average of around 60, with six hundreds and four fifties. He has been signed up by Kings XI Punjab for the seventh edition of IPL."It's a perception. I have a good ODI domestic record. I have scored runs at an impressive strike rate in domestic matches. So, I don't think it would be a problem for me adjusting to the T20 format," he said. "In Twenty20, people expect big shots from you. I need to be aggressive from the first ball. I have to take my chances. I have started my preparation and the good part is there's still a month left before the tournament gets underway," he added. Pujara said he is happy to become part of Kings XI Punjab franchise."I am looking forward to my association with Kings XI Punjab. I believe playing for KXIP will give me more exposure and experience. I have always loved the

and I feel we have a good chance," Sharma said. He had bowled the last over in the 2007 T20 final when Pakistan needed 13 runs with one wicket in hand. After being hit for a six by Misbah- ul-haq, he eventually dismissed the Pakistani batsman to hand India a thrilling win. Sharma said he has endured tough moments in his career as he was laid low by shoulder and ankle problems in 2008. He made a good comeback in 2009 but a car accident in 2011 again pegged him back. "But now I am fit. As good as I was in 2007. I am doing well and hopefully selectors won't ignore me," he said.

streets of Chandigarh city. I have played quite a few domestic games there and somewhere, I have this hidden love for the city," he signed off. INDIAN WOMEN BEAT BANGLA, CLINCH T20 SERIES COX'S BAZAR (BANGLADESH): Indian women produced a clinical bowling performance to comprehensively beat their Bangladeshi counterparts by eight wickets in the second T20 International and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series here today.Medium pacers Jhulan Goswami (2/15) and leg-spinner Poonam Yadav (2/9) rattled the Bangladesh top and middle order as the home side could only muster 65 for nine from their 20 overs after electing to bat at the newly built Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium. Shikha Pandey also chipped in with one scalp, but Bangladesh were not helped by their poor running, as run-outs accounted for four dismissals. Three batters went for ducks, while only four players managed to reach double digits.

Anand to compete in Candidates for another shy at World title K

HANTY MANSIYSK (RUSSIA): With odds staked against him, five times world champion Viswanathan Anand aims to make a grand comeback in the Candidates chess tournament that starts here. With the weather slated to hit -14 degrees in the week, the heated battles are likely to compensate as eight of the world elite compete to find the next challenger for world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway. It may be recalled that Carlsen defeated Anand in the last World Championship match at Chennai by 6.5-3.5 margin to become the undisputed king of the 64-squares

late last year. The eight-player super tournament will be played under double round robin basis and there will be 14-grueling rounds in all before the winner is determined. After a recent decline in form and rating, Anand starts only as the fourth seed in the tournament. Levon Aronian of Armenia is the rating favourite with his ELO touching 2830 points. Russian Vladimir Kramnik who missed winning the candidates by a whisker last year, is ranked second ahead of former world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria.Sergey Karjakin of Russia is behind Anand and is seeded fifth ahead of seven times Russian champ Peter Svidler.

THE BOLDENONE MYSTERY DEEPENS: NANOLI HORSES POSITIVE ONCE AGAIN

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014

By Timur

The blame game is on

Who did it? Where did the Boldenone come from? Which company supplied it? Is it a fact that in our stud farms, anabolic substances are being used? What is happening now is: charges and counter charges are being hurled at one another. It has become evident no proof of any kind is available. The stewards must, in right earnest, start again inquiry. This time, they should make efforts to find an answer and if they cannot drop the matter.

W

ill the RWITC stewards be able to hit the bull's-eye and solve the mysterious Boldenone case? The mystery has deepened once again. For the fourth time, horses coming from Nanoli farm have tested positive for Boldenone. Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy, owner of Nanoli Farm explains: Boldenone was injected into Bull's Eye during its journey from Nanoli farm to the stables in Mumbai. If this was really the case boldenone content in the urine should have been more. The alleged source of Boldennone, it is alleged, is at Nanoli farm. There is however no proof of this. Those in the know, talk about conspiracy. Nobody has been able to explain why there has been a conspiracy. Does anyone benefit by administering Boldenone to horses that come from Nanoli. The matter has been investigated by the stewards. They have not been able to reach any conclusion about the mysterious happening. There appears to have been an opinion that it is better to close down the case. Now that once again the issue has come up, it is better perhaps a full inquiry is held. The government, the Home Ministry – is said to be keen about this. Charges and counter charges are being hurled at one another but any positive action seems to be conspicuous by its absence. All parties or persons concerned should be open to enquiry. Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy must be prepared to throw open the gates of Nanoli for a

thorough enquiry to be held. One of the ways of doing is to test every horse at Nanoli. Boldenone remains in the horse for over a year. Another way of looking at the problem is to find out in which part of the horse's body, the Boldenone remains. It is an arduous task but it is better that – to avoid any kind of slightest suspicion – all horses are tested. I am told that Boldenone remains in the hair on the tail of a horse. It is better that Mr. Dhunjibhoy agrees to the testing of all his horses. Boldenone could not have come from nowhere. It is clear some human hand is behind it. Both Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy and Mr. Pesi Shroff are facing charges

K N Dhunjibhoy and [L] Pesi Shroff against them. It is being said that when the horses come from the farm, they look fit as a fiddle. This could be because they are being given the right kind of food. I know a trainer who gives milk to the horses. A lot of questions are being asked by curious racegoers about the mysterious happening. They may not have any basin at all but they must have positive answers: 1. Why are horses from only Nanoli Stud Farm are being tested positive for Boldenone? 2. Are some interested desi or foreign countries targeting a big name like Dhunjibhoy and making charges without proof.

Dadar Union, DPZ, MIG & Bombay Gym win alkar (2/10) bowled well. DPZ then achieved this target by losing four wickets. Former veteran cricketers Madhav Mantri and Vijay Tulpule along with former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar inaugurated the tournament. In the afternoon session MIG restricted New Hind to 99/8 in the allotted 25 overs and then scripted an eight-wicket win due to superb batting from Varun Lavande (53 with 10 fours). Varun and Shreyas Mandlik (19 n.o.) put together 79 runs for the second wicket.

Former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar interacts with young cricketers on the opening day of the Vijay Tulpule Cup U/13 Cricket tournament on Tuesday.

UMBAI: Dadar Union won the first round league match in the Vijay Tulpule Cup U/13 Cricket tournament played in Dadmkar Maidan, Matunga due to the allround performance from Divyansh Saxena. In other matches Dadar Parsee Zorastrian, MIG and Bombay Guymkhana also registered easy wins. Dadar Union who elected to field after winning the toss bundled out

Indian Gymkhana team for just 59 runs as left arm spinner Divyansh Saxena took five wickets for just 19 runs. After that Divyansh made 40 not out to register the first win for his team without losing a wicket. At Matunga Gymkhana DPZ also asked Matunga Gymkhana to bat first after winning the toss and skittled them for paltry 55 runs in 20.1 overs. Their left arm spinners Ayush Kamat (3/11) and Abhishek Day-

3. Should not – after horses from Nanoli has been tested positive – an enquiry be held with regard to the role, if any, played by the workers and other staff of the farm? 4. There is absolutely no proof that Pesi Shroff is a “benami owner” of the farm, and yet why such things are being said. 5. Is Pesi Shroff is involved at all in any kind of conspiracy? 6. Is it only random test of horses coming into Mumbai stables. Why there was no such practice before? 7. Is it not desirable that horses coming from all farms should be tested for drugs – as a precautionary measure? All sorts of drugs are in the market and are easily available.

8. Who is Umed Singh? Was he in the staff of Nanoli for several years? 9. Every owner has the right to remove horses from a trainer. Horses from trainers Byramjee, Padmanabhan were taken away without any provocation. 10. Pesi Shroff both as a jockey and trainer – has always been clean. How then allegations are made against him? 11. How does Maneka Gandhi – animal lover – coming into the picture. How can she have anything to do with doping cases in Western India? 12. Instead of allowing charges and counter charges, printing accusing fingers at one another, is it not better to hold an enquiry and summon all those allegedly involved in the mysterious happening and arrive at the truth? The best authorities who can conduct this special type of inquiry is RWITC stewards themselves?

IN BRIEF

SENT INTO THE WELL AT WELLS

Kaneria submits 28,000 pounds to get appeal hearing on ban

Nadal and Sharapova beaten at Indian Wells

I

NDIAN WELLS: Rafa Nadal and Maria Sharapova were both knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Monday after stunning upsets at one of the world's biggest tournaments outside the four grand slams. Nadal was sent packing by Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-5) after Sharapova fell to Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-3 4-6 7-5 as last year's men's and women's singles champions both crashed out. Nadal blew a 4-2 lead in the deciding tiebreak after the Spaniard had fought his way back from 5-2 down in the deciding third set. "I wanted to play very well here. I had good success in this tournament in the past, a tournament I always feel good about," said Nadal, who will now turn his attention to the Sony Open in south Florida.

Lagos double strike gives Churchill first win in AFC Cup

MARGAO: Cristhian Lagos struck twice as Churchill Brothers drubbed New Radiant of Maldives 3-0 to secure their first win in the AFC Cup here today. Lagos scored in the 31st and 75th minutes while Anthony Wolfe got the other goal in the 52nd minute in the Group E league match at Nehru Stadium at Fatorda here. With today's win, Churchill, who lost to Persipura Jayapura of Indonesia in their opening encounter, opened their account with three points from two matches.New Radiant, who had beaten Home United of Singapore, remain on three points from two outings. Churchill were determined to put it across New Radiant and started brightly by moving the ball on the flanks well with Costa Rica striker Lagos and Trinidad and Tobago's Anthony Wolfe combining well upfront.

"I'm going to keep working hard to try to be ready to play better in Miami." Nadal beat Dolgopolov in the final of the inaugural Rio Open last month but the Ukrainian got his revenge on the world number one in the Californian desert. "I feel great, as after every win, of course. I beat the defending champion and the number one in the world," said Dolgopolov, whose next opponent is Fabio Fognini after the Italian saved two match points in a 6-2 3-6 7-5 win over Frenchman Gael Monfils. Giorgi, a 22-year-old ranked 79th in the world, made the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year as a qualifier, but her win over the world number five Russian was the biggest of her career. "I did not play a good match at all," said Sharapova, who dropped serve eight times and committed 58 unforced errors.

PAES-STEPANEK PAIR MOVE INTO INDIAN WELLS QUARTERS

Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek downed Jonathan Erlich and Richard Gasquet in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Indian Wells Masters tournament, here. The fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair quelled the challenge of the wild card opponents 6-3 7-5 in one hour and 16 minutes in the second round of the USD 5,240,015 hard court event. They will now fight it out it with Swiss legend Roger Federer and his partner Stanislas Wawrinka, the singles Australian Open champion in what is a splendid match-up. "(I've) never played against her, but she's someone that doesn't give you much rhythm. She's quite aggressive, but some shots she hits incredible for a long period of time. Sometimes they go off a bit. But, if I'm speaking about my level, it was nowhere near where it should have been." Giorgi will play her countrywoman Flavia Pennetta in the next round after she beat Australian Sam Stosur 6-4 3-6 6-1. There were no other major surprises although Britain's Andy Murray was forced to dig deep to see off promising Czech Jiri Vesely and avoid a similar fate. The Wimbledon champion won 6-7 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 but only after clawing back from the brink of defeat against the 20-year-old Vesely. "It was just one of those matches where there wasn't one period where I thought that the

level of tennis from both of us was high at the same time," said Murray. Switzerland's former world number one Roger Federer also advanced after he was pushed all the way by Russia's Dmitry Tursunov before winning 7-6 (9-7) 76 (7-2). Federer, who won his 78th career singles title in Dubai earlier this month, will play either German Tommy Haas or Japan's Kei Nishikori in the fourth round. "I feel like I'm in a good place," said Federer, a four-time champion at Indian Wells. "I know what my solid level is. Even if I won 6 and 6 today, I just feel like I was calm and served for the set. "Okay, got broken. Still managed to stay calm. Down ... in the second; stayed calm and came back. So those are the moments where you feel there is confidence around somewhere."

Advani advances to second round as Aditya loses N

EW DELHI: Eight-time world champion Pankaj Advani overcame a stiff challenge before prevailing over World No.25 Xiao Guodong in the first round of the Haikou World Open in China. The Chinese played in front of a home crowd that was keen to see him come through but were sportingly appreciative of a dynamic display of snooker by the Indian pro in a tight contest held in the Hainan province capital. The recently crowned Indian snooker champion was at sea in the first frame, struggling to adjust to the conditions that were contrasting in nature to that of the Indian National Championship conducted in Lucknow last week. 0-1 down, Advani shifted gears and made a 51 break in the second frame to draw parity. The third frame was unusual by nature as it ended in the Indian's favour even though he was trailing by over 20 points. Guodong made a break of 62. While Advani was fighting back, the Chinese made three consecutive foul-and-misses. According to professional snooker rules,

that amounts to a frame being awarded to the opponent. The rare misfortune for the Chinese presented Advani with a 3-1 lead before the former fought back with a 70 to make it 3-2. Advani clinched the sixth frame and was close to the finish line in the best-of-9 encounter. However, the resilient Chinese, one frame away from defeat,

proved his class and made framewinning breaks of 61 and 63 respectively in the next two to make the scoreline 4-4 and enforce the decider. With the shift of momentum, the local favourite was on the brink of a remarkable comeback but Advani had other plans. His reputation to raise his game to the next level when it matters most was upheld yet again as he scored a match-winning 80 break, clearing the table. After overcoming the second highest ranked Chinese, Advani is likely to face China's number one player Ding Junhui tomorrow. The other Indian, Aditya Mehta, however did not make it and lost in the first round to a lesser-ranked player in England's Michael White.Starting off as the favourite for the match, the Indian faltered and lost the match 3-5. Results: Pankaj Advani defeated Xiao Guodong 5-4: 7-87, 72 (55)-44, 61-24, 43-66(62), 0-76(70), 67-(56)-51, 1983(61), 15-85(63), 119(80)-0.Michael White defeated Aditya Mehta 5-3: 9-77, 78-7, 23-70, 74-49, 65-8, 69-67, 0-91, 60-29.

KARACHI: Pakistan's banned test leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria has submitted a sum of 28,000 pounds with a commercial high court in London in order to get his appeal against the life ban heard on April 11th. A source close to Kaneria told PTI that he had with the help of relatives, friends and colleagues managed to raise the 28,000 pounds. "He is in dire financial strait but this hearing is also his last chance of being cleared and having the ban removed so he somehow managed to raise the amount," the source said. Kaneria was told by the commercial court judge last month that he would have to deposit the security money if he wanted his appeal against his life ban to be heard on April 11th.

Vani Kapoor starts as favourite in absence of strong rivals

GURGAON: With two titles in four tournaments so far, Delhi golfer Vani Kapoor would start as favourite in the fifth leg of the Hero Women's Professional Golf Tour, starting at the Classic Golf Resort, here tomorrow. The season so far has been one of great comebacks, and this leg will be a tightly fought one. Vani has shown maturity and consistency and in the absence of Sharmila Nicollet, Smriti Mehra and Neha Tripathi, Vani is a clear favourite.
