rotests have always been over serious issues, but the Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Sena (BVS) went a step ahead and protested over a joke. A seven-year-old student had written a small joke on a sardar in the school magazine. After the magazine was published, the members of BVS resorted to a strong protest against the school management and principal for publishing the joke. The principal was also told to give a written apology for publishing the joke. The incident took place on Tuesday at the Little Angels School in Sion. The BVS stated that there has been an attempt to ridicule the Punjabi community and hence the little kid and the principal should be punished. Last month, the principal of Hinduja College was asked to give an apology in writing as members of the Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shiv Sena claimed that the principal had been rude and did not respect the name of their youth wing president, Aditya Thackeray.

he much awaited list of BMC guidelines for the use of antibiotics was finally out on Wednesday. These guidelines – titled ‘Guidelines for Antimicrobial Therapy and Prophylaxis’ – have been created to streamline the use of antibiotics in BMC-run hospitals, and is an attempt to control the issue of drug resistance among patients. “These are guidelines for antimicrobial therapy and prophylaxis and to break the cycle of drug resistance. This is called antibiotic stewardship, where doctors will be told how to use antibiotics safely without putting the patient at a risk
of developing a resistance to drugs,” said Dr. Suhasini Nagda, Director of all major BMC-run hospitals. This set of guidelines, that have been printed in the form of a book, have been sent out to the BMC-run hospitals, and doctors have to give their feedback within 15 days so that necessary changes can be made to the guidelines. “The guidelines will be reviewed periodically. The first feedback is expected within 15 vdays, after which there will be periodic reviews. Again after a year, necessary additions, deletions or changes will be made. The guidelines will evolve as and when required. Our aim is to

Currently, fifty copies of the guidelines have been printed, but by end of March this year, 3,000 copies will be printed, and every resident doctor will have a copy, informed Dr. Nagda. Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital – commonly known as Sion Hospital – said, “This is a good start to tackle the problem of drug resistance. While every doctor can always use his or her discretion while handling a different or a
complex case, these guidelines will act as a basic broad framework to be looked at while prescribing antibiotics.” A pharmaco-vigilance committee will also be set up at every hospital, whose responsibility will be to monitor the implementation of the guidelines. “The committee, which will comprise people from departments like pharmacology and microbiology, will check the implementation of the guidelines, and also look into the appropriateness of the use of discretion from the doctors’ end while prescribing antibiotics,” said Dr. Nagda. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in
Activists want govt to repeal UAPA By Philip Varghese
I
n an attempt to put pressure on the government to repeal the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a group of activists under the banner of ‘Peoples Movement Against UAPA’, has written to the government, highlighting the alleged draconian nature of the act. The organisation – which held a press conference at the Press Club on Wednesday – said that the amendments made to the UAPA Act have lent a serious blow to the basic tenets of fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution. “Thousands of youth hailing from the Muslim, Sikh, Dalit and Adivasi communities are languishing in different jails in India under charges of UAPA. Repressive laws like TADA and POTA were withdrawn when people protested against the severe and drastic misuse of the law, and the consequent demands of human rights activists and right thinking people in the society were met. The government was forced, during the general election, to make election promises to withdraw the TADA and POTA. TADA was allowed to become defunct. POTA was withdrawn,” said Kamal Faruqui, convener, Peoples Movement Against UAPA. Professor P. Koya, a member of the organisation said, “The object of the amendments to UAPA is supposed to be to combat terrorism. But in practice, it targets people in-
volved in raising legitimate protest and democratic resistance. When law enforcement agencies started the implementation of UAPA, it reflected their nepotism, racism and religious bias. The provisions incorporated vide different amendments to UAPA are more repressive and draconian than the TADA and POTA. Most of the provisions contained in UAPA are against the life and liberty of citizens guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. If a person is booked under UAPA, his release on bail is a remote possibility. Section 43(D)(5) of the Act is exceptionally severe and says that by the mere perusal of the case diary or report of the police, a judge can keep an accused in prison. Thus, the subjective feeling of the judge on the basis of the police report is enough to reject bail and put the person in jail for ever. One cannot believe that the police will file a favorable report in the case of an arrested person.” Faruqui further added, “The public has no access in the trial of UAPA case. The details of witnesses need not be disclosed to anybody. There can be secret witnesses. The trial can be conducted on the whims and fancies of the judge. The name of the witnesses need not be mentioned in the judgment, and so that the entire proceeding can be carried out in a clandestine manner, no evidence needs to be shown to the accused for reason of national security.

A Sibling Affair Azad Shrivastav | ADC
Nowhere near as high profile as their cousin in Matoshri, two people at the press conference held by their father, MNS leader Raj Thackeray at his residence Krishna Kunj in Shivaji Park on Tuesday were the cynosure of all eyes as they stood unobtrusively to one side, watching the proceedings. Or at least, as unobtrusive as one is allowed to be if one carries a famous surname. It helps of course, that both the youngsters are also very easy on the eye with a refreshing unawareness of the sort of effect they have on people. And as some people watched, an amusing tablueau unfolded, just reminding us that these are typical collegians with typical collegian interests, mainly centerd around mobile phones. And there you have it. (1) There's a bit of curiosity as Urvashi sees something going on in brother Amit's cell phone. (2) Let's have a look, she seems to say as she sidles a little closer. (3) Oh, that's funny, she seems to say as she takes the instrument over and settles her glares a little more firmly on her head. (4) Give it back, he seems to say now, except that she's determined she will return it when she's good and ready! Just two normal kids studying at Ruparel and Ruia, still with a bit of time to decide whether the cut and thrust and sheer scrum of politicking is for them. Or not!

Striking back!
We are trying to figure it, doing our best to imagine it. Mumbai is going to have an air-conditioned local train this year. So how exactly does that work? Will it be nine coaches, 12 coaches or 15 coaches? Will people stop getting in once the compartments are filled? Will we be able to travel on the footboard? Will we be able to lean out of the running train and jeer at the one on the neighbouring tracks, or make cat calls and obscene gestures at the women’s compartments? Will we be able to climb on the roof and do stunts? Will the airconditioning work in peak summer conditions? Will we be able to bear the stink of the blood, sweat and tears that characterises too many local train commutes these days? If the answer to these questions is largely yes, there is a chance it will work. Currently, with trains of capacity 1,700 passengers carrying upwards of 5,000 people at crush load capacity, we think not. So it’s a nice dream, and if the air-conditioned local is introduced at any point this year, we will stand on the platform and admire it as it goes past. Go ahead, air-condition this as a gift to Mumbaikars who travel in near sub-human conditions to get to and from work every day. To be fair, the Railways are struggling with the We’re willing to bet it will not numbers too, but don’t give us the promise of air-conditioned local trains in the Budget. The part of that promise that is not absurd is just plain bizarre. operate for too long!

ven as the 'rasta roko' agitation announced by MNS chief Raj Thackeray played out across the city, the police on Wednesday detained him along with his followers and party workers. Yesterday's agitation was against toll collection across Maharashtra. The agitation ended peacefully after Thackeray received an invitation for talks with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, said sources. The MNS boss was detained at Chembur with his supporters when he was proceeding to the Vashi toll plaza in Navi Mumbai to enforce the 'rasta roko', which had sparked fears of violence. In addition, unspecified number of MNS workers and supporters were also detained in Mumbai and the neighboring cities. Thackeray, who has been demanding transparency in collection of toll, left his Dadar home with some MLAs and supporters for Vashi but his vehicle was stopped on Eastern Express Highway at Sion, where he was made to sit in a police vehicle which brought him to RCF police station in Chembur. Police had earlier said he was arrested for violation of section 149 of CrPC under which a notice was issued to him yesterday warning against participating in the agitation. Section 149 CrPC empowers a police officer to take action to prevent occurrence of a cognisable offense.

There were attempts to block the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway.
Deployment of police Apprehending a major law and order problem, after Thackeray's announcement on Tuesday, the state police had deployed over 1.8 lakh policemen, besides contingents of Rapid Action Force and State Reserve Police at toll booths and on highways. Security was also beefed up at vital installations, including railway stations in the city and suburbs to prevent violence and vandalism.
MNS leaders in police net Raj Thackeray is facing multiple cases for instigating party workers to vandalise toll plazas. Meanwhile, two MNS MLAs Shirish Shinde and Mangesh Sangle, along with their 40 associates, were arrested in two separate cases of rioting at Vikhroli in Mumbai, said JCP (Adminstration) Hemant Nagrale, the acting police commissioner. A bus was damaged after stone pelting by two unidentified men in suburban Meghwadi, added Nagrale. On Ghodbunder Road, police arrested a number of persons including city unit President Nileesh Chavan. Other MNS office bearers like Manohar Sukhdare and Rajan Gawand were also picked up for leading the agitation in other parts of Thane. Police said, by and large the agitation was peaceful but soon after Raj's detention, MNS activists forced shops and other commercial establishments to down their shutters and also asked the auto rickshaws to go off the roads. Barring noisy protests and stray incidents of stone pelting, situation in the city remained peaceful, said Nagrale. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

post-mortem has failed to confirm the gender of an unidentified person whose skeletal remains were recovered from the Mahim creek in Bandra (west). The Bandra police have now sent the remains to the anatomy department of the J.J. Hospital to ascertain the gender
of the skeleton. Officers of the Bandra police station said that the body when found was lying on its chest in the mangroves of the creek. “Due to the tides, the front portion of the body had been completely decomposed which is making it difficult to identify the gender of the person”, said Police Inspector (PI) Rajendra Kane from Bandra police station. The officers also said that they will get the reports from the anatomy department on Wednesday after which they will make attempts to identify the person. “The person must have died at least one or two months ago”, added Kane. On Monday, a few local boys had found the skeleton in the creek at around 6 pm

when they were searching for wooden objects in the area, said the police. The remains were sent to Cooper Hospital for post-mortem. Last year in September, the Bandra police had found a torso of a woman near the Mahim Creek on the Reclamation Road and the woman is still unidentified. Her body had been stuffed into a gunny bag that was found by rag-pickers. Subsequently, a case of murder was registered against unidentified persons. The police said they have not made much progress in this case, but have put together information on about 200 cases of missing women registered in the past few years.

Suraj Pancholi appears in trial court By Philip Varghese
A
lmost a month after the Juhu police, investigating the Jiah Khan suicide case, filed a 447-page chargesheet against Suraj Pancholi, son of actor-couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, Suraj appeared before the trial court on Wednesday. Advocate Dinesh Tiwari, representing Jiah's mother Rabiya, said “The pre-trial formalities in the case are yet to be completed. The police had filed the chargesheet last month against Suraj, following which the magistrate had transferred the case to the sessions court for trial.” This comes a month after the Mumbai Police Crime Branch said that being a nodal agency, they had received a letter from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through the CBI offering help in the
investigation in the case. Jiah's mother had met US Consulate officials, as Jiah is an American citizen. She had alleged that her daughter was murdered, but the police have found no evidence to support her claim. The police arrested Suraj on June 10 on the basis of a six-page letter which was found in the house, purportedly written by Jiah. Police booked him on the charge of abetement of suicide. Suraj, who was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on July 1, 2013, said that Jiah and he were in a consensual relationship and the letter was being misused by Jiah's mother Rabiya. Rabiya had moved the Bombay High Court in October 2013, alleging her daughter had been murdered, and sought a CBI probe, following which, the court asked the police to record her statement, collect material given by her, and probe the murder angle.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray at Pune was held at SP College grounds under pressure from the state Home ministry. He added that as per the clauses of the prohibitory orders slapped on Thackeray a day earlier, the MNS chief ought to have been detained the moment he stepped out of his house. He said that the government did not have the time to meet the farmers of Kolhapur who were agitating a year ago for better prices for sugarcane. Bhandari wanted to know as to how come the government which was labeled by MNS chief as dacoits suddenly turned pious as Thackeray accepted the chief minister's offer for talks. The state BJP spokesperson wanted to know as to what fines were slapped and recovered from the MNS for vandalising public property. Bhandari stated that the BJPSena combine was made to pay for damages in lakhs of rupees. Sena president Uddhav Thackeray sarcastically remarked that “those who do not have a case of killing a mosquito lodged against them, should not talk.” In a hard-hitting editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana, the Sena termed the anti-toll stir of MNS as “Arrest Me” drama, which had political patronage of the state. State BJP president Devendra Fadnavis argued that people want tollfree Maharashtra and that his party had already raised the issue. Meanwhile, sources disclosed that MNS leadership had circulated a message to their MLAs, district presidents and cadres to hit the streets to make the agitation a success in order to ensure victory in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. have been closed after the expiry of the recovery period. Railways state more than one reason for mishaps Gaps between foot-board of trains and platforms not the sole cause of commuters losing their lives, railways tells HC By Philip Varghese
A
lmost a month after two railway accidents led the Bombay High Court to take suo-moto cognizance of media reports and asked the Ministry of Railways, Western Railways, Central Railways and Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to file their replies on recent accidents, the railways on Wednesday told the court that the gap between footboards of local trains and the platforms is not the sole cause behind commuters losing their life or limbs in mishaps but there are several other factors involved. This comes as the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sanklecha had taken up the issue after a 16-year-old college girl, Monica More, lost both her arms after falling into a gap between the platform at Ghatkopar railway station while trying to board a local train last month. The HC notice to railways in the last hearing quoted news reports on how a Central Railways’ request to raise the height of platforms over
and above the nationally prescribed parameters has been pending with the Railway Board for four years. However, during the hearing on Wednesday, the court posted the matter for further hearing as the railways filed an affidavit which stated that the
accidents do not occur only because of the gap but several other reasons like trespassing and even over-crowding. The affidavit also added that there are no separate rail corridors for local suburban trains and long-distance trains. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Released, told to go home Raj Thackeray requested party workers not to react violently to his detention Pic by Sushil Kadam
By Khushboo Panjabi
A
fter being taken into custody at Chembur by the Mumbai Police on Wednesday, Maharashtra Navniram Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was released at 1 pm, on the condition that he would return to his residence and not proceed to the Vashi toll naka to carry out his agitation against toll tax. While Thackeray was in detention at the RCF police station, he passed a message to his party members stating, "Party members be silent. Do not take the law into your hands and co-operate with the police.” Last week, Thackeray – in his speech in Pune – spoke about carrying out a 'rasta roko' on February 12 against toll tax, and on Tuesday, he told the press that the protest would be a peaceful one, since HSC students would be appearing for their practical examinations. While being released from police custody, Thackeray said, “I request all my party workers to remain calm. I will meeting the Chief Minister on Thursday at 9 am to discuss the issue.” Thackeray started out from his residence at Shivaji Park at 10.15 am, accompanied by his wife Sharmila
Raj Thackeray after he was released from the RCF police station. Thackeray, MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar and a host of party workers, to carry out the mass agitation against toll collectors in Vashi at 11 am. However, before he could reach Chembur, he was taken by the Additional Commissioner of Police, Praveen Salunkhe, into preventive custody at the RCF police station. Sharmila Thackeray and several party workers were seen protesting outside the police station, soon after Thackeray was detained. Speaking exclusively to the ADC, Thackeray's advocate Saiyaji Nagre said, “On Tuesday morning, the Mumbai police served a notice under Section 149 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to MNS Chief Raj Thackeray. The notice stated that he should not commit any cognisable violence or
break the law, which he did not. The detention procedure and agitation was undertaken peacefully.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

n the drawing rooms of Lutyens’ Delhi there is these days a sense of an ending. The sort of feeling that comes when an empire is on the verge of quietly fading away and although an ‘anarchist’ as chief minister has something to do with this there are other reasons why in these last days of winter it feels as though we could be living through the last days of something very significant. While Arvind Kejriwal grabs headlines every day with some new antic or other behind the scenes something more historic is happening. The Congress Party that has ruled India for the past decade, and for most of our years as an independent country, appears to be preparing itself for a time away from power. that the Congress Party’s trump card, Rahul Gandhi, is not as much of a trump card as party strategists thought it would be. But, because there is no other card left to play the party’s campaign continues to put him at its centre. So in the streets of Delhi (and other Indian cities) appeared last week sepia tinted posters of Rahul with a faraway, brooding look on his face along side slogans that seek to convince the uncertain voter that he would do well to invest his vote once more in Congress. Unite do not divide. Governance not politics. And, other banalities in précis form is what you read on the posters. On television it is hard to watch a news bulletin these days without

What I have gathered in my recent wanderings through the salons of Lutyens’ Delhi is that most senior Congress leaders have accepted the possibility of Modi becoming India’s next prime minister. In these salons mingle politicians and journalists, high officials and senior members of the diplomatic corps and all talk these days is of the coming general election. agreement in these circles that he is showing signs of megalomania. He is not popular. My leftist friends admit that if the choice is between Modi and Kejriwal they would rather have Modi to which I usually respond that if the choice is between Rahul and Kejriwal I would rather have Rahul. For someone with a reputation for ‘hating’ the Dynasty this is some admission.
Kejri wants Cong to withdraw support From ‘reliable sources’ in the Kejriwal camp the news is that he is desperate for his government to be brought down and it is to this end that almost on a daily basis he says or does something that he hopes will make the Congress Party withdraw its support. In this city of rumours, rumour has it that Kejriwal wants to get out of being chief minister of Delhi so that he can be a contender for prime minister. Rumour also has it that there are others among his comrades who do not want him to exit the Delhi government because they themselves would like to become prime minister. Rumours in Delhi cannot be believed but they cannot be discounted either. The victory in Delhi has made AAP dream big dreams. If you listen carefully to Kejriwal’s daily utterances you will notice that he now speaks of himself as a messiah. Listen to this. ‘I did not come into politics to become chief minister. I came into politics to rid India of corruption.’ Wise men know that this is not something one man can do but Kejriwal and his comrades are not wise men. If they were they would not let everyone see that they are already drunk with political power. Nobody sees this more clearly than senior Congress leaders but since for them the choice is between being tossed for a longish while into political oblivion or supporting someone like Kejriwal they would like to ride some distance on his wagon. Having watched governments come and go in Delhi for more than 30 years may I end by going back to what I said at the beginning of this piece. It feels as if this coming election is going to bring more than just a change of government. It feels as if this coming election is going to bring an empire crashing down. I was not around to see the last days of the British raj but from what I have read in history books I believe it must have felt a bit like it does in these last days of winter in Delhi.

JUSTICE Mukul Mudgal's investigation report about match fixing and betting submitted to the Supreme Court have indicated the involvement of IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) boss Gurunath Meiyappan the son-in-law of BCCI chief N. Srinivasan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundar in the match fixing and have exposed them of cheating. I strongly feel that both Meiyappan and Raj Kundar who have cheated millions of people must be banned along with their teams from participating in the 2014 Indian Premiere League (IPL) and the BCCI chief whose company India Cement owns the CSK franchise must resign from the post with immediate effect and should not be allowed to take the post of International Cricket Council (ICC) chief in the month of July for lowering the image of India and the game of Cricket. It is high time that the Indian police which is investigating the case must file a charge-sheet against both of them. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
THE ICC is very strong and emphatic on its zero tolerance policy against match fixing and corruption in Cricket. Pawar meets Modi AFTER Sharad Pawar’s statement that he had indeed met Narendra Modi, the Congress in Maharashtra should at once break off its coalition with the NCP; even though the meeting might have taken place in their official capacities; with the former as the Union Agricultural Minister, and the latter as the Gujarat Chief Minister. The BCCI chief must resign follow the conditions laid down by IOC; though it is not under its jurisdiction, against tainted persons holding official positions. In all fairness, the election of the present incumbent who is to take over in July 2014 should be held null and void. Fresh elections should be ordered for the Chairman's post with a person of clean and untainted background. The same policy should also be applicable to the BCCI. The current BCCI President Srinivasan behaves like the dictator of a banana republic and stands no opposition as all its affiliates are indebted to him in some way or the other. Will the members of the BCCI most of whom are non-cricketers/politicians stand up and get their house in order to elect a taintfree president? Also, will the apex body of the game – the ICC – has the guts to put on hold the present IPL season till the shenanigans of those involved is resolved? Sickening feeling The article 'Income Inequality Rises In India' by Lalit K. In the said article, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Madeleine Odette Lagarde (not only LETTER OF an eminent French THE DAY labour lawyer but also a noted altruist) said in her speech at London while delivering the Richard Dimbleby Lecture, inter alias, Income Inequality Rises In India: This sagging spirit of inequal income coupled with 'youth bulge' in India is beyond doubt responsible for many maladies prominent among them being the abominable increase in the number of billionaires (by notoriously amassing wealth!) as well as a number of below the poverty line public giving rise to beggars and illeducated people involved in acts like endemic rape, chain snatching, thefts, burglary murdering of senior citizens, women and children! THE Mudgal Commission has cooked BCCI President N. Gurunath Meiyappan, the 'enthusiast' of the Chennai Super Kings has been charge-sheeted by the police for unenthusiastic activites and till such a time he is cleared of all charges, the Board president should step aside. Flawed facts RAHUL Gandhi says that leaders in Gujarat do not know history. So let me ask a few questions to him. Can he give me one date and place where his great-grand-father Jawaharlal Nehru was supposed to have fought for freedom? Even history books are unable to give any details of Nehru having done anything that can be termed as fighting. Waving your finger vigorously and saying that you have sent another reminder to the Viceroy is not 'fighting'. And if Nehru was such a great fighter why was he not sent to the Andamans where the real freedom fighters were imprisoned? The British knew who the real freedom fighters were and they were either hounded out of the country (Bose), virtually murdered (Lala Lajpat Rai), or deported to the Andamans (V.D. Savarkar). Nehru was sent to prisons like Naini Tal, Pune and Aurangabad where he could write letters to his daughter, which later

Singing the blueS
Tipriti Kharbangar is a vocalist who is keeping the blues alive with her band, Soulmate. The musician from Shillong talks to Rhea Dhanbhoora about her music and upcoming performance at The Mahindra Blues Festival this weekend
S
hillong based band Soulmate was formed in 2003 and released their first record in 2005. Their second album, Moving On, was released in 2009. Having toured India and the world, the band which comprises of guitarist Rudy Wallang and vocalist Tipriti Kharbangar, are all set to bring the blues to Mumbai with their second performance at the Mahindra Blues Festival 2014 (MBF). We talk to Tipriti to find out more about their music and what their third album (which will be launched at the festival) is like. What’s in store for audiences at MBF? Well, we've got something new lined up this time, as we are going to bring our roots to the festival.
Did you always want to be a musician? No, I had no idea that I was going to pursue something I just love doing. As a little girl, something I loved was waking up on Sunday mornings (at 6am!) to go to children’s mass. I would always wait for the part of the service when the choir master told us to open our hymn book to my favourite hymn. I’d be the loudest of them all! What made you and Rudy decide to collaborate together? When Rudy met me, I knew nothing about the blues, but he saw that I had the blues in me. It definitely lives in me, so it was just natural that we started to work together. What’s your one favourite song to perform? I have been writing a lot recently, and there is a song that we are working on often since our third album is about to get released... it’s a song that I wrote, called LIE.
Who are your inspirations and influences? Everything in life inspires me. We turn to things we can relate to and the blues has always been that for me, even when I didn't know what it was. Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Etta James, B.B. King and Buddy Guy have always inspired me. Of course, Rudy has inspired me the most. Who do you really admire in the music industry right now? I really admire Eric Clapton for what he is doing for the blues and music in general, as well as his work with rehabilitation. How do you guys handle disputes? We’ve never had any! Decisions are made together and we have a manager, Keith, to advise us as well. Do songs fall into place or do you work on them separately? Rudy writes his songs and I write mine. I write lyrics first then the melody, then I sing it to Rudy and ask for his opinion and we work on it together to make it a complete song. Anything you’d like to tell people before they come see you? (Laughs) Clean your ears so you don’t miss a thing! You’ve played this festival before. Will you come back? Why not?! It’s about the music and we love to play the blues. Do you want your sound to evolve with each new album? This album is different because I have contributed four songs and we recorded it in Mumbai. We tried to get as close as possible to our live sound. We learn different things everyday... so our sound will definitely evolve.

fables on philosophy Author of the book I Am Life, Shraddha Soni tells Shirley Mistry about her new book and what compelled her to write this story What are the different issues that your latest book covers? I Am Life is about the purpose of the soul. The philosophies in it convey that life is not a coincidence but an important stage in evolution. It covers the difference between the ego and soul. What is the best way to deal with our common inner conflicts? Identity crisis is the root. We are lost in a socially driven world looking for a mask. We spend all our energy fixing our outer façade and lose touch with ourselves; so we are perpetually role playing. Witnessing and questioning yourself is a way to break out of the role. Ask, ‘Why do I want to do this?’ ‘What is my real intent?’ ‘Do I believe in what I want to do, or is it just to get me attention and approval?’ What inspired you to write this book? I didn’t set out to be an author, this story made me one. I saw this story in a flash of a moment and it got stronger by the day. To calm the clamour, I started making notes on my phone. Months later when I joined them, I realised that I had an entire story. Which authors do you admire? What appeals to you about them? I am a dictionary-worm! It is one book I can claim to have read fully and enjoy reading, as it brings me back to the real meaning of words. I also love The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exuper for the simplicity with which profound messages are conveyed. Why did you choose a fable, rather than opting for non-fiction? I am a storyteller. I need characters, drama and a little bit of magic. I always tell friends I have a film studio in my head, so whatever I say will be through a fable. What can readers expect from your next venture? Another mystical fable.

Girls, you don't have to wear super tight jeans and tees to show everyone how slim you are. It just makes you look uncomfortable. Case in point: Preeti. Her pose looks strained and what's with everyone buying ugly shoes? Cheee.
The ganji and jeans look is safe and with ‘Hero’ emblazoned across her chest, Ileana's look wants to come across as cute (and promotional) but it looks cheesy. The jeans are terrible and the boots look very uncomfortable. Great hair though!

One of fashion's ultimate fails — the double denim look. While we're all for a lightweight denim shirt with a dark pair of jeans, Ariana's jacket is heavy, boxy and studded. Complete with chunky boots, this look gets a thumbs down from us.
Actresses dread turning up to an event dressed in the same outfit as another actress. So, obviously this ganji-jeans getup was part of the contract. Nagris fairs slightly better than Ilena in the jeans department but those shoes are an equal eye sore.
Finally, we can exhale! Sarah shows the other ladies how to rock jeans. Paired with a relaxed tee, the actress looks comfortable and stylish. And at last, shoes that are practical and look good! We love the hair and simple pendant chain too.

« 5 ways to Rock: a maxi skiRt
Summer is fast approaching and it is time to get your maxi skirts out of the closet. Shirley Mistry tells you how to style them 1. Colour bloCk The easiest way to pull of this trend is by colour blocking. Pair a mint green top with a navy skirt, a shocking blue one with a lemon yellow blouse — the combinations are endless! 2. FitteD at the toP Make sure that the blouse or top you choose is fitted. Since the skirt is flowy, a baggy or loose top gives you a sloppy appearance and ruins your entire look. A plain tank top does the trick.

2. estÉe lauDer Pleasures is our all-time favourite. The perfume is literally like a bouquet of flowers with fresh lily, peony, jasmine and karo karounde blossoms lending their scent to it. It's a great scent without being sickly sweet. Price: `5,250
3. interestinG Details Since the maxi skirt doesn't have too many variations in terms of cut and style, opt for one that has a slit or a high low hem to mix things up. You can also add an element of interest by pairing a printed skirt with a top that is laser cut or one that has a cut out at the back to create some drama without being over the top. If you have a toned midriff, you can also pair it with a crop top.
3. Chanel We know that No. 5 is the perfume for sexy allure, but try a little romance with an oft under-appreciated but delectable scent from the brand called Chance. With a generous sprinkling of vanilla, jasmine, iris and a heady dose of white musk, walk into a room wearing this perfume and heads are sure to turn. Price `9,500
4. aCCesorise The best way to accessorise your maxi skirt, is with a nice belt. Since maxi skirts are worn higher up than regular ones, the belt will cinch your waist further and enhance the slimmest part of your body. It also helps take away the attention from the problem areas if you are heavy bottom. You can also opt for statement or bib necklaces to accessories your top. For a more subtle and chic look, layer several thin necklaces.
4. Yves saint laurent Want to add a little spice to your relationship? Nothing stirs it up better than this romantic classic. With mandarin, coriander and exotic florals blended into an intense, endearingly romantic scent, Opium is not for the faint-hearted. Price `4,500
5. Dress it uP Maxi skirts can also be worn to a party or a more formal gathering. Pick a fully sequined skirt and pair it with a neutral blouse and a blazer for a chic look. If sequins aren't your thing, pick a skirt in a fabric that has some sheen to it. Pair it with a complementary blouse, a topknot and a dainty clutch for an elegant evening look.
5. DolCe & Gabbana With Scarlett Johansson as brand ambassador, you know you're going to get something utterly desirable with this perfume — and you do. With mandarin, lychee and bergamont as well as a hint of Lily of the Valley, plum, vanilla and even caramel blending brilliantly together — Desire has really earned its name. Price `6,500

size does matter Buying lingerie for your wife or girlfriend isn't something you can do on a whim. If you walk buy a store and like something, chances are you have no idea what size would fit her. And unlike a top or sweater a S, M and L tag doesn't apply. Although it involves a little snooping, dig around your partner’s lingerie to figure out her bra cup size and panty size. Also, stockings come in different sizes depending on height. So, be sure to try and get one as close to your girlfriend's height. Also, don't be scared to ask a sales attendant for help. style issues Make sure that you pick up something that appeals not only to you, but will be appreciated by your partner as well. If she likes black lingerie and you get her something that is neon or something a little too extreme, while she will appreciate you efforts, chances are it will pushed to the back of her wardrobe and it will never see the light of day.

While it is extremely sexy to gift your partner lingerie, buying it is tougher than you imagine. If your tastes lean more towards classy, this black bustier and panty set with lace detailing from La Senza is just the thing for you. Price `1,290 onwards
the right body type Lingerie is all about flattering your body. So, if you pick something that is bound to have squishy bits poking out from here and there when your partner puts it on, she isn't going to be too happy and neither are you. On the other hand, if you get a style that suits curvy bodies and your partner is more on the svelte side, it will hang on her in an unflattering manner. Ask the sales assistant to help you. Quality We probably don't need to say this but we will anyway – get something in the best possible quality. Stay far away from scratchy nylons and stiff nets as she is going to be very uncomfortable wearing the lingerie. Choose something that is luxurious to the touch and has a proper finish.

« career advice deal with a perSOnal Space invading, meSSy cOlleague My office has an open seating plan and there aren't any dividers between desks. My colleague, who sits next to me, has a ton of stuff lying on her desk. It has reached a stage where piles of papers, books and files are slowly creeping on to my desk. While we are good friends, her desk is messy and the occasional pile of papers collapsing on my desk or the sight of a coffee mug with remnants from two days ago is upsetting me. How do I tell her that she needs to stick to her side of the desk? — Sujata roy, mahim dear Sujata, No one likes a messy colleague so don't worry, you aren't out of line here. While the mess is her business, you aren't wrong if you feel that her piles of dusty papers belong on her desk and not yours. To give her a hint, start sneezing and pretend to wipe down your desk. You could also wonder out loud as to why you are sneezing. This might be a good enough hint to set her straight. If she pays no heed, come in early one morning and clean both desks — yours and hers. When she comes in, tell her you noticed that her desk was awfully messy and since she didn't have the time to tidy up, you tidied it for her while you cleaned up yours. This should be enough to send out the message loud and clear. However, if she still doesn't understand, just tell her that her mess bothers you and is distracting.

crush control When you consider that you spend nearly 40 hours a week with your colleagues, developing a crush on a co-worker doesn’t seem so unlikely. But, from HR frowning upon an office romance to messy situations, there are a number of tips you need to keep in mind if you have a work crush. Dev Goswami lists them out...
>> There is a very low chance that something like this is ever going to happen between you and your crush. So, stop dreaming and get back to work!

rushes are natural and can happen when you least expect it. Your workplace, where you spend most of your waking hours, is one of the most likely places for you to develop a crush. But, while crushing on a colleague is fine, what is important is the way you handle it. It is possible that your heart will be saying one thing, while your brain says another. Which do you listen to in such situations? Our tips below will make it easier for you to sort through the confusion.
Vision Express, the eyewear brand, has introduced two brand new collections, the Linear Collection and the Mosaic Collection. The Linear Collection (top) is a unisex range that has a metallic look with hand-finished dual-tone temples. However, it is the women’s Mosaic Collection (bottom) that we’re in love with. The range features some eyecatching colours and is simple but classy. The frames are perfect for everyday wear and feature unique detailing around the temples. where Vision Express outlets in the city price `1,999 onwards
Office pOlicy This is the first thing you should find out, even if you do not intend to act on your feelings. While most organisations aren’t comfortable with workplace relationships, there are a few companies that don’t mind as long as it doesn't get in the way of your work. Whatever your office policy, you need to find out so that you don’t end up damaging your reputation or career.
Keep it private Not just from your crush — don’t even tell the co-worker who you consider to be
your ‘BFF’ about your crush. Information like this is bound to interest your colleagues and will spread like wildfire. And when we say ‘keep it under wraps’ we don’t just mean not talking about it — watch your behaviour and your manner of talking when you’re around your crush — you never know who’s watching!
Stay prOfeSSiOnal Regardless of your office policy, it is important that you keep your interactions with your crush professional. Even if you do decide to act on your feelings, never let your personal affection affect your dealings with him as a co-worker.
StOp daydreaming When you develop a crush on someone, your workplace suddenly becomes more interesting. You look forward to work and will search for the slightest hints or signs that he has similar feelings for you. But, not only can this end up with you living in a fantasy world, it may also affect your career, as you might end up paying more attention to your crush than your work.
So, give yourself a reality check and don’t get carried away by fantasies.
advantage watch In this phase, you will think that your crush can do no wrong. But, if he doesn’t feel the same way about you and finds out about your feelings, it is possible that he might take advantage of you. What may start off as you buying him coffee, might turn into you ‘helping’ him out by doing his assignments, because he is ‘so busy.’ Beware.
prOS & cOnS Finally, we come to the all important question — should you ask your crush out on a date? You need to weigh all the pros and cons before doing so. Would your office be okay with it? Do you think you can manage to be unbiased and professional while dating a colleague? What happens if the two of you break-up? These are just a few questions that you will need to find answers to. And of course, remember that it might just be a small crush.

scared to love?
« sos: solve our situation!
Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on... I have a problem that is making me feel really bad. I don’t know quite what to do.
Six months ago, my friend N got engaged. She had given her onagain-off-again boyfriend an ‘ultimatum’ the last time they broke up...
And he came back on his knees! Literally! Hee hee!
There is no good that comes out of being closed towards getting into a relationship, says Shirley Mistry. Take this quiz to find out if you are pushing a probable partner away
Not exactly my idea of romantic... but she was very happy! I was in Thailand on holiday a couple of weeks after N’s announcement, when you can imagine my surprise... then shock and horror... when I see S (N’s fiance) at a club that I was at.
>> Don’t let bad experiences from the past make you skeptical about meeting new people and finding live
A
s time goes by, playing the dating game may seem like a tiring and exhausting process. Add to that the hurt from past heartbreaks and things can get quite morose. However, is the bitterness from your past ruining your chances of finding true love? Take this quiz to find out. It is Saturday night and your friend calls you to meet a guy she thinks you would hit it off with. What would you do? a. I’d tell her that I have to buy groceries/ do the laundry/ am unwell. Anything to get out of it! b. I’d be a little hesitant but I would trust my friend’s instincts. c. I’d hang up, get dressed and go for it! A new guy you’ve gone on a date with only a few times suggests you both take a hobby class together. How would you react? a. I’d change the topic — immediately! b. I’d think about whether I like this guy enough to commit to taking a class with him. c. Why not? It's a great way to get to know someone better, right? Do you often find that whenever you are dating someone new, the guy asks you all sorts of questions, instead of you telling him things yourself. a. Why does he need to know everything about my life? b. Not really. It’s just the details I’ve forgotten to mention that he asks about. c. No. He knows all that there is to know about me. You spot the guy you’ve been on a date with only a couple of times walking down the street with another woman. How do you react? a. I knew it! All men cheat sooner or later. b. I make a mental note to ask him about it later.
c. I go over to meet him and chat for a bit. When your closest friends talk to you about dating someone, is their advice often sprinkled with words like ‘you need to move on’, ‘learn to let go’ and ‘all men aren’t the same’? a. Yes, that does sound familiar. b. I’ve only heard that when I’ve just broken up with someone. c. No. Never! Mostly As Time to face it — you have a problem. Baggage from past relationships is plaguing your judgment and you constantly have thoughts such as ‘sooner or later it will all fall apart’or ‘he is cheating on me.’ It is unfair to let the bitterness from your past affect the way you see new people. All men aren’t the same and not all of them will cheat on you. Let the bad things that have happened stay in the past. While it is good to open up to someone slowly, clamping yourself shut is a bad idea. Start slowly and you may find that a beautiful relationship is just around the corner. Mostly Bs Neither are you closed to love, nor are you overtly outgoing. You give the other person a fair chance and ease into relationships. You have made peace with your past and don’t let it affect your current relationships. Great going! Mostly Cs There’s nothing in the world that could knock you down. You believe in starting afresh and initiate relationships with an open mind. You don’t let bad experiences from the past deter you. You pick yourself right up and move on. However, don’t jump into things too quicly as you may find yourself in a vulnerable position that you may regret later. Also, your enthusiasm may be mistaken by him as being over-eager, so tone things down a little if you get that vibe.

The problem is that when we go out, everyone is so shocked that he's dating me. People constantly refer to him as 'handsome' while I am the 'smart one.' He finds me attractive but my self-confidence

has taken a hit. Should I just date someone in my league? — Parineeti Das, Malad Dear Parnieeti, Wow! Some girls have to settle, but you've found a guy who you get along with, who loves you and is handsome (that's just a bonus!). Forget about what people say as it arises from jealousy and their own warped
notions. Remember that looks fade. Sure he's a hunk today, but tomorrow he's going to get old and grey just like the rest of us. What really matters is that you two get along great. Be proud of your handsome man and don't let other people bring you down, as you seem great for each other. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in
Kissing another woman! It was dark so I kept staring to make sure it was him. Then he suddenly shot a look my way... and here’s where I feel super ashamed of myself. He looked at me and I quickly looked away, pretending that I hadn’t seen him.
I did not confront him, I quickly left the place, hoping they were ‘off-again.’ But, they weren’t and aren’t.
The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, dressed up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!
N is thoroughly enjoying being bridezilla, and S’s job, which takes him abroad often, means he could be doing whatever he wants!
"The wedding is in four months. I have not told anyone what I saw for about five. Should I? If ‘yes,’ how?” — BadsMaid a) You waited five months? Why? Are you absolutely sure it was him? Talk to some of his friends. Find out if this is regular for him. And of course you need to tell her. Maybe broach the matter with a hypothetical ‘what if’ scenario. b) Can you talk to him? Make him tell her. c) Don’t tell her. If this is a reason for their on-off relationship, then N can’t not know who he is. And about her ultimatum... maybe this way they are both getting what they want. LAST WEEK: Tania should pick Option C: Talk to her, don’t tell her off. Highlight your good experiences and reason out the bad. Let her in on your Mumbai.

Common problem in men
I am 49 years old and suffering from what may be a common problem in men of my age. My wife is an extremely loving person. Problem of PE began in 1998-99 but I could manage to satisfy her. But this recent problem has has me stumped. I do not get proper erection and get PE while trying to penetrate. This has been happening since last few months. I do not suffer from diabetes or BP, or any other problem. Please advise. YOU seem to be experiencing Erectile Dysfunction (ED) as well as Premature Ejaculation (PE). As far as erectile dysfunction is concerned, there are many organic (physical) as well as psychogenic causes for this problem. If it is due to psychogenic or situational causes, the treatment will be “sex counselling” and “supportive therapy”. If the cause is organic or constitutional, then appropriate medical or surgical measures will have to be undertaken. Your other problem is premature ejaculation.
HEART TO HEART Dr. Rajan B. Bhonsle M.D. (Bom) Consulting Sex Therapist & Counsellor
Dr. (Mrs.) Minnu R. Bhonsle Ph.D. Consulting Psychotherapist & Counsellor
There are no medical causes for premature ejaculation. It is essentially of a psychobehavioral and relational origin. Ejaculating early is a learned reflex response that can be effectively reconditioned when a man and a woman actively pursue learning ejaculation control together. You need to increase your awareness of the sensations of arousal building so that you can identify the level of your arousal. Secondly, awareness of sensations of arousal and ejaculatory control can be learned by following a step-by-step process. Couples are taught to use the ‘squeeze technique’ or the ‘stop-start technique’. Besides techniques, certain exercises for sphincter control and using a condom may help in some cases.
Why she needs to evade sex?
I have been married for approx four years with a child aged two. Earlier we enjoyed great sex 4-5 times in a week. It’s just that she just does not feel interested towards sex now. Last month we had sex only once in the entire month. This is getting somewhat annoying; as a result I don’t like interacting with her much.
21
Request your advice. IT is important to understand why she needs to evade sex. Is it because she has been left unsatisfied or has had some painful experiences of the sexual act with you? Is it because of fear of pregnancy? Is it because she disapproves of some sexual behavior you demand? Is it because she considers the sexual act as sinful, dirty etc. due to religious reasons? Is it because she has unresolved emotional issues with you and so cannot give in to intimacy without resolving them? Is she unwell? Is she overworked? Is she involved with someone else? All this needs to be explored with your wife. I suggest that both of you have a session with a good sex counsellor to reach to the bottom of the matter. TOP VIEW We have recently approved the in-principle setting up of a payment system which will facilitate the funds transfer from bank account holders to those without accounts through ATMs. The key to cheap and universal payments and remittances will be if we can find a safe way to allow funds to be freely transferred between bank accounts and mobile wallets, as well as cashed out of mobile wallets, through a much larger and ubiquitous network of business correspondents.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5 and 200 days moving average. Further, the velocity parameters are neutrally trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. But the index is still below its 15 and 25 days moving averages and both the averages are declining. This is negative. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to adopt a wait and watch policy, until a clear reversal signal is visible.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions

SEBI To Consider New Corporate Governance Code Today
By A Business Reporter
C
apital markets regulator Sebi will consider a proposal for new corporate governance code for listed
transactions of company executives from the unlawful and serious trading offences. Besides, to help the mutual fund industry create
companies and their top executives, among other issues, today. The new corporate governance code would require listed companies to justify high executive salaries, put in place an orderly succession plan, adopt a whistle-blower policy for employees and limit the number of directorship a person can hold on company boards. Various other measures to safeguard the interest of minority shareholders are also part of the proposed norms. These norms, along with an overhaul of nearly two decade-old insider trading norms, would be taken up by the SEBI board meet, scheduled in Delhi. Under the proposed norms on insider trading many new categories of persons, including public servants, regulatory officials, judiciary and government officials, dealing with unpublished price-sensitive information, are being brought under the purview of insider trading. At the same time, new norms would also seek to clearly differentiate between 'innocent mistakes' and genuine
more understanding and better positioning of products amongst investors, the market regulator will also consider a long-term policy for mutual funds, in its meeting tomorrow. Other issues likely to be discussed include additional fundraising avenues in capital markets, including through real estate and infrastructure investment trusts. A final decision on these fronts, however, is expected only after the government decides on tax treatment for such instruments. It is also proposed to introduce a new concept of 'Corporate Governance Rating' by independent agencies to monitor the level of compliance by the listed companies, in addition to regular inspection by SEBI and stock exchanges. The new norms also talk about a greater alignment of CEO salaries with the performance and goals of the company, as also mandatory disclosure of ratio of remuneration paid to the each of their directors and their median staff salary. Similar provisions have been made in the new Companies Act.

A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy’s passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. IT’S ALL ABOUT Actors from
AVATAR CHANDRAN’S NEW
LOVE
Sudha Chandran who replaced Mona Ambegaonkar in Manish R. Goswami's ‘Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai Ajab Ra Risk Hai' on Life Ok, is a success story in herself. Despite losing her leg in an accident, she continued dancing after being fitted with a Jaipur foot. She became a star with films like ‘Pati Parmeshwar’ and went on to become the queen vamp of television in the iconic show ‘Kahin Kisi Roz’ with her character Ramola Sikand. In a brief chat with the danseuse, here is what she said By Sandeep Hattangadi
What have been the landmarks in your career? My failures and successes have been the landmarks of my career. Had I not failed, I wouldn't have fought to be successful. My turning points were my first movie 'Mayuri' and the serial 'Kahin Kisi Roz'.
You are a success story in terms of your acting career as well as in the way you handled the tragedy that struck you. Your story was made into a film and is a part of school text books also. How does it feel? I feel so honored. Everyone reads about important people and their lives. I feel honored to be the reel and real life heroine. I feel good that I've been strong enough to handle my life and have never fallen down. What changes do you find in the TV industry over the years? I've seen no changes at all. I'm back after a break and it seems the same. Only the themes have moved from metro to retro now. Were you apprehensive about replacing Mona Ambegaonkar in the show?
I wasn't apprehensive, but yes, each actor leaves a benchmark and a color that they give to the character, and therefore, you need to work hard. I am very glad I got this role because it's challenging for me. I need to do my homework before I get to work. I am used to playing metro and elite rolee, but this is the first time that I'm playing a rural role. Is it easy to speak with a Haryanvi accent for you? It was initially tough for me, but now it is manageable as Manishji helped me a great deal. I also do my homework and I'm actually enjoying the challenge. What kind of roles do you prefer to do? At this point in life I want to do meaty, challenging and difficult roles, as I want to be engrossed and constantly struggling to achieve newer marks. Ramola Sikand in 'Kahin Kissi Roz' was a rage and was considered the most stylish character on Indian television in terms of bindis and sarees. How do you feel? I feel so elated that I'm considered as a

stylish person. It was all thanks to Homi and Ekta Kapoor for my look. They wanted a high profile and elite Delhite look for me and thus the whole image was established.
Is there any character of yours which is very close to your heart? All my characters have been special to me, because work is my source of livelihood and I find it all challenging.
Do you watch films or read books to improve your skills? I never read books, except magazines. I am a movie buff and I watch loads of them. Which are the actors you look up to and why? I have looked up to different people at different stages of my life. I used to like Rajesh Khanna as he was the best romantic hero and later Shahrukh Khan.

SPECIAL EPISODE
For me, Valentine's Day is a specific day to celebrate love. However, I also think that everyday should be like it, because if I am with the one who loves me, then everyday is Valentine's Day for me. Since I am single, I will celebrate this Valentine's Day with my family and friends. I will organise a small party, will buy them some gifts and flowers and will try to show them how special they are to me and how much I love them. To me love is trust. It needs understanding. Without trust as the very foundation, any relationship will struggle to grow. Vin Rana
Valentine's Day is when you express how much you love your partner. For me it's a day of love and I celebrate according to my partner's mood, since I consider it to be the best way to express my love. For me, love means understanding my partner better than she understands herself . Rohit Bhardwaj

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2014
ANGALORE: Flamboyant allrounder Yuvraj Singh was the surprise recipient of a windfall at the IPL players' auction, fetching a record bid of Rs 14 crore from the Royal Challengers Bangalore while Dinesh Karthik also clinched a mind-boggling Rs 12.5 crore purse from Delhi Daredevils. Both Yuvraj and Karthik, who are not even regular members of the Indian team, triggered stunning bidding wars among the franchises to set a new record in earnings in the cash-rich league. They surpassed the Rs 11.04 crore that was

Controversial batsman Kevin Pietersen, whose England career came to an abrupt end after a disastrous Ashes campaign earlier this month, fetched a huge Rs 9 crore purse, bought by Delhi Daredevils, the franchise he played for last season. Upcoming New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson, who scored the fastest ODI century smashing a 36-ball ton to breach the record set by Shahid Afridi in 1996, expectedly got a decent package of Rs 4.5 crore with the Mumbai Indians though there was strong buzz of him emerging as the highest paid from this auction. Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson (Rs 6.5 crore, Kings XI Punjab), all-rounder Glenn Maxwell (Rs 6 crore, Kings XI Punjab), Indian opener Murali Vijay (Rs 5 crore, Delhi Daredevils), South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis (Rs 5.5 crore, Kolkata Knight Riders), Robin Uthappa (Rs 5 crore, KKR), West Indian batsman Dwayne Smith (Rs 4.5 crore, Chennai Super Kings), Amit Mishra (Rs

Actress Preity Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, Juhi Chawla, coowner of Kolkata Knight Riders, businessman Vijay Mallya, Nita Ambani (Mumbai Indians), cricketers Rahul Dravid (Rajasthan Royals), Anil Kumble (Mumbai Indians) were among the celebrities present at the auction which was beamed live. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, former New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor, Australian T20 specialist Cameron White, who captained SRH for a while last season, West Indian Marlon Samuels, pacer Daniel Christian and England batsman Ian Bell surprisingly found no buyers. Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, batsman David Hussey and retired pacer Brett Lee also suffered a similar fate but all the unsold players can come back into auction today. Yuvraj, a cancer survivor, fetching such a huge price tag came as a massive surprise since the left-hander is no longer in the ODI team due to poor form though he was picked in the squad for the World Twenty20 Championship in Bangladesh. "The team is looking stronger with him," said RCB coowner Vijay Mallya even though he admitted that he ended up paying Rs 4 crore more than what he had planned. Similar was the case of Karthik, who does not figure in the Indian team, but generated immense interest among the franchises. At a

base price of Rs 2 crore, there was a bidding war between Delhi and Hyderabad for him before KKR also jumped into the fray. But Delhi seemed persistent and in the end, outbid the other two contenders. The 33-year-old Pietersen was always expected to be a hot pick given that he would be available all through the season post his forced retirement from international cricket. So it came as no surprise that his name triggered a three-way bidding between CSK, KXIP and Delhi. The player eventually went to Delhi, who exercised the 'Right to Match' provision to grab him being his former employers.
Yuvraj Singh who returned to the World Cup T20 squad fetched a whopping Rs. 14 crores during the IPL auction held in Bangalore. He was picked by Vijay Mallya owned Royal Challengers.

EW DELHI: Dinesh Kar thik was sulking in the pavilion after being clean bowled by Karnataka skipper R Vinay Kumar during the Rest of India's second innings in the Irani Trophy game when he got the news of Delhi Daredevils buying him for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore at the IPL auction. "Yes, I am very happy but I never thought that I would get this kind of a price. Actually, I came to know a bit later as we didn't have access to television in the dressing room," Karthik told PTI today after being the second biggest draw in the auctions following Yuvraj Singh (Rs 14 crore).
"I was actually pretty angry with myself after getting out and was sitting quietly," he said. Asked if there would be any added pressure on him having commanded this kind of a price, the talented wicket-keeper batsman replied, "I don't think so as you don't play cricket just to earn money. I have never played my cricket that way. I have been picked by Delhi Daredevils and as a professional, it is my duty to perform to the best of my abilities". But will this million dollar deal (USD 2.03 million) work at the back of his mind as people will equate his performance with the amount of money he is getting, the Tamil Nadu stumper was honest in his reply. "I have never been through such a process earlier, so I won't be able to relate how it works for a particular player in this situation," Karthik said. For Karthik, another aim would be to win back his place in the national side. "There is nothing more important than wearing the national team jersey. The goal is always to play for India and that will be an added boost while performing for Delhi Daredevils," Karthik said. Karthik had enjoyed his stint with Mumbai Indians and is now happy to make a move. "I have had a fair amount of success for Mumbai Indians but now we have to move on since I wasn't retained or picked by them," said Karthik.

LACK OF INTEREST IN TAYLOR, WHITE SURPRISES RAHUL DRAVID

ANGALORE: Playing down Justice Mudgal committee's report on corruption in the IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya said scandals were a part and parcel of the every sport and the brand value of the cash-rich event remained unaffected. "It happens in every sport. We would not have been sitting here if we would not have been excited about the IPL, committed to the IPL. The brand IPL have been growing in value. It is unfortunate that there are such scams from time to time. But I think the core of IPL is sound," Mallya said. BCCI Chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, the former Team Principal of the Chennai Super Kings, was indicted for betting by former Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal committee, which was appointed by the Supreme Court to probe the IPL betting and spot-fixing scam. Six prominent "Indian capped" players' names, including one who is part of the current team, also cropped up in the report filed by the committee. Stating that there is no evidence against those six players, Mallya said, "It is a bunch of speculation. What I do know is that the Supreme Court has specifically permitted this auction to go ahead. Therefore, I don't think there should be any concern."

ANGALORE: A bunch of quality international cricketers went unsold on the first day of the IPL 7 players' auction here, but what surprised former India captain Rahul Dravid the most was that hard-hitting Kiwi batsman Ross Taylor and Australia's Cameron White did not find a buyer. Taylor and White are among the 144 players who went unsold in the players' auction at a city hotel here. And Dravid, who is currently the mentor of last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals, feels Taylor and White could have been good buys for the franchises if the duo had come in the first part of the batting list. "It was a bit of surprise for me (to see Taylor go unsold). Ross (Taylor) in Rs 2 crore could have made a lot of sense but I think he came at the back end of the batting list which went against his favour," said Dravid. "I think someone like Cameron White who is a shrewd captain and
Former Rajasthan Royals skipper, now team mentor, Rahul Dravid during the auction. good batsman (is also unfortunate). What I feel is that people have learnt that they can't afford to spend so much money and then make the
players sit outside. By the time Ross and White came, I think most of the franchises have sorted out their top four-five batsmen," he added.
Dravid, who was Rajasthan Royals captain till the last IPL, expects some exciting fight among franchises today. "The two lots which come up for auction tomorrow morning would be crucial because you have a lot of uncapped Indian players there and everybody seems to be waiting for that," he said. "You will see a lot of Indian players going for their base prices and I think that's what the teams are waiting to pick up. You will see a lot of frenzy like what you saw this morning."Dravid said all the franchises have learnt with time and IPL 7 will witness smaller squads with impact players in all the teams. "I think teams have realised that smaller squad is a good option as it's difficult to manage big squads. Moreover, there is no logic behind spending money on a player and then make him to sit out. It's also not nice to see many international stars sitting out," he said.
Kings XI Punjab go into Day II with max purse of Rs 12.1 cr
BANGALORE: The Ness Wadia-Preity Zinta co-owned Kings XI Punjab will go into the second day of the IPL VII auctions with the maximum purse of Rs 14.2 crore out of Rs 60 crore salary cap having 12 players on their roster right now with six overseas stars. Kings XI also have one Right To Match (RTM) left to be used today when the uncapped players go under
the hammer. The best part is that with a minimum squad of 16 and maximum of 27, KXIP can strategically use the remaining Rs 14.2 crore. If Kings XI have the biggest purse left, Royal Challengers Bangalore will go into second day with least purse of Rs 1.8 crore having exhausted exhausted a whopping Rs 58.2 crore in buying 12 players (including
retentions). Rajasthan Royals need to buy another minimum five players (to attain squad of 16) and have a healthy purse of Rs 12.10 crore. KKR still needs to buy another six players to complete their minimum squad composition of 16 with only Rs 9 crore left in the purse. Delhi Daredevils, who have created a flutter by roping in Dinesh Karthik for
a whopping Rs 12.5 cr have bought 13 players today and is left with Rs 8.6 crore. The formidable Chennai Super Kings have had some smart buys and still are left with Rs 2.9 crore needing to complete the minimum squad composition of 16 players. Mumbai Indians have Rs 5.15 crore left in order to buy another six players minimum having bought only five today.
Two good bets: Swashbuckler, Celtic King By Timur
A
good bet today is Swashbuckler in the Campnero Plate. The horse owned by Dr. Vijay Mallya and Mrs. Vijay Mallya is trained by Pesi Shroff. It was second to Murioi last time out — though 8.5 length behind. There are other runners which have a handicap chance. But for me it is going to be Swashbuckler. Another runner with chance to Dable or Quits in the Great Investment Plat.e Sky Lantern has been shedding some light and hence cannot be ignored. And also Hyde Park. Wasabi or Natalian Express should win the Blue Horizon Plate. The latter won last time out running away -- 4.5 lengths. It is handicapped heavily and it should run well. Ainra, Magic Star and War Horse run with chance in the Forest Flair Plate. Mr. Haresh Mehta’s horse Celtic King is trained by C.D. Katrak has a good chance in the Oyster Cove Trophy. Last time out, it ended up 2nd to Nush. There are eight races today and the first starts at 2.30 p.m.

ANGALORE: Leg spinner Shreyas Gopal claimed the first hat-trick of his career to guide Ranji champions Karnataka to a convincing innings and 222 runs win over Rest of India (ROI) to lift the Irani Trophy crown on the fourth and penultimate day. Gopal (5/35) also registered his best bowling figures, while skipper R Vinay Kumar scalped four
for 70 to bowl out ROI for 183 runs in their second innings in 57.5 overs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gopal picked up three wickets in three balls in the 58th over to bring down curtains to ROI's dismal batting performance in the second innings. Gopal first dismissed set batsman Baba Aparajith, caught by Stuart Binny at long-off, with the third delivery of the 58th and then disturbed
the timbers of Ashoke Dinda and Pankaj Singh with two perfect googlies to wrap up ROI's innings and seal the match for the hosts with an entire day to spare. Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar's four wickets in the second innings also helped him to end with an impressive match figures of 11 for 82. Resuming their second innings at 114 for three, ROI's middle and lower
middle order fell like pack of cards, riding on Gopal and Vinay Kumar's effective bowling as their last seven wickets could add just 69 runs. Aparajith, who resumed on overnight score of 42, was the lone bright spot for ROI as he laboured his way to 66 off 162 balls even as other batsmen failed to put up a fight in the face of some disciplined bowling by Karnataka bowlers.

GENEVA: An inquiry commission set up by cycling's global governing body the UCI appealed to riders who were doped in the past to come forward in exchange for reduced punishment. "The primary purpose of our investigation is not to punish doping offenders but to learn from the past so we can help ensure a better future for cycling," commission chief Dick Marty said in a statement. "We will treat all witnesses fairly and so I urge anyone in the cycling community with information that can help our investigation to come forward," he added. The three-member Cycling Independent Reform Commission was set up in January to investigate historic doping in cycling and allegations that the UCI had been involved in previous wrongdoing. The commission said its main goal is to determine how a culture of doping was perpetuated between 1998 and 2013, and to establish who was to blame.
