Can the state government come up with an ordinance to save the flats?

Fali S Nariman, Senior Counsel, Supreme Court of India, seems to think it can. This is what he says: “I have carefully read the opinion of (retired) Justice B. N. Srikrishna and I agree that there is no legal impediment in the way of the State Government to issue an appropriately worded Ordinance before the deadline arrives for demolition. But immediately on the promulgation of the Ordinance, the Querist would have to make an application to be relieved of their undertakings already given to the Court (and recorded in its orders) to pray that at any rate the building be not demolished in view of the subsequent law viz. the Ordinance. This aspect has not been dealt with in the Opinion of Justice Srikrishna and I would suggest that a supplemental opinion be requested on this point from him.”

New book makes stars of this tiny community and the legacy they have left behind in the form of its urban Jewish heritage Vishwanath Salian | ADC

T

hanks to its Jewish history, more specifically, its tiny community of Baghdadi Jews, Mumbai has one more book to delight both historians and seekers after nuggets of urban lore. Yesterday at the David Sassoon Library and Reading Room in downtown Mumbai, “Bombay: Exploring the Jewish Urban Heritage” was introduced to a rapt audience in the garden behind the building, by Consul General of Israel Jonathan Miller. Felicitations and a silver citation to Maneck Daver and team of Spenta Multimedia, the designers and printers of the outstanding tome, preceded a reading by author Dr Shaul Sapir, once a Byculla boy, now teaching historical geography at Hebrew University in Jerusalem since 1975. Consul general Miller spoke of the magnificent examples of architectural design that the Baghdadi Jews had contributed to then Bombay. “This is a ground breaking work,” he declared, referring to the book. “If it can help contribute to the understanding of the treasures that lie around us in this city, it will have done a lot”, he added. He also praised the “real and personal involvement” of the author, along with the story, so that a combination of formal data gathering, maps, pictures and other material, with that touch of the personal had resulted in something unique, he observed. Miller spoke of the stories that he kept hearing from members of the Jewish community in Mumbai, stories that painted the city as a cosy village where everyone knew everyone else. “What we see now is a major change in its old identity, and

Israeli consul general Jonathan Miller (standing) introduces Bombay” Exploring the Jewish Urban Heritage, by Dr Shaul Sapir, to a select audience at the David Sassoon Library and Reading Rooms yesterday evening. Also in the picture (left to right) are Manek Davar of Spenta Multimedia, Solomon Sofer, CMD, Jacob Sassoon Trusts, Ralphy Jhirad, publisher of the book, Vivek Ajgaonkar, member emeritus of the library, and the author, Dr Shaul Sapir. a book like this can re-kindle the sense of Bombay’s identity. The Jewish community can be proud of its role in the building of the city,” he announced, to considerable applause. Both Ralphy Jhirad, managing trustee, Bene Israel Heritage Museum and Genealogical Research Centre, publisher of the book, and

Solomon Sopher, CMD, Sir Jacob Sassoon Charities and Allied Trusts, spoke of the tremendous amount of work that had gone into the making of the book. The latter also remarked that very few Mumbaikars were even aware of the amount that the Sassoons had done for the city. He mentioned that there were at least 27 properties associated with

the name, which formed public buildings or parts of them today. Finally it was the turn of the author, Dr Sapir, who revealed that the history of the Baghdadi Jews, who comprised just ten percent of the total number of Jews in India (including the Bene Israel, the Cochin Jews and the Menashe in the north east of the country, particularly Mi-

zoram and Assam, had always fascinated him. As a Baghdadi Jew in India himself, he had wondered why the community was split between two cities and different as Bombay and Calcutta. And while of the ten percent, eight percent were in Calcutta, only two percent were in Bombay, and yet their contribution to the city was great. It was to this two percent of Baghdadi Jews in Bombay that he had dedicated nine years of research. Dr Sapir spoke grippingly of the ten lost tribes of Israel, exiled and scattered around the globe since 721 BCE by the Assyrians. The Menashe in the north east had finally proved to be one of them, now accepted as Jews with a right to migrate to Israel if they wished. It was factors like this and the structure of the Jewish community in India that caused him to embark upon his project which he described as” more like a Caesarian birth after nine years of labour, not easy at all”. The book, he said, was a present to the community, and indications were that it was still not over, as more and more information kept cropping up. He also described Mumbai’s range of gothic architecture as rivaling any city in the world, with the largest number of the finest examples. Among those who attended the event were representatives of the NGMA, the Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahlaya, members of the Jewish community, from the Sasson Library, Rotary Clubs and other organizations. On display at the Library currently is a lavish showing of postcards of Old Bombay owned by Rajan Jayakar.

Keeping these numbers in mind, the BMC in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and some corporates is organising a diabetes detection campaign today, November 13, 2013, through which it aims at screening two lakh people in one day. The BMC plans to put up 250 kiosks at various places across the city while a hundred more will be set up by its private partners. Rapid tests will be done at these kiosks and further guidance will be given to people who are diagnosed with diabetes. “The consumables and diagnostics will be provided by the corporates while the premises and medical assistance like doctors and paramedics will be from the BMC,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, Additional Municipal Commissioner. Statistics given by the BMC state that 21,734 people out of the 80,360 people who walked into the 55 BMC diabetic dispensaries across the city were diabetic, 25,647 people were found to be diabetic from the peripheral hospitals while 34,782 people were found to be diabetic from

the major BMC run hospitals. While the BMC did not have more numbers about diabetics from the peripheral and major hospitals, it revealed that at the dispensary level, 55 per cent of the diagnosed diabetics were women. Also, out of the 21,734 diabetics found at dispensaries, 61 per cent were between the ages of 40 and 60, 27 per cent were above the age of 60 and 12 per cent were under 40 years of age. he Vasaigaon police have arrested a 35-year-old woman who physically tortured a 21-yearold youth under the pretext of performing black magic to help him meet his dead father. Jitesh Ghoshe, fromNirmal village in Vasai, was under severe mental depression since his father’s demise a few months ago. He heard that a woman of the village, identified as Darshana Jadhav (35), possessed powers and would enable him to meet his dead father. Jadhav allegedly served Ghoshe milk laced with sedatives and went on to singe and scald his body by placing cotton-balls dipped in hot oil. Under the pretext of exorcising a ghost from his body, Jadhav even pierced Ghoshe’s neck with some sharp object. Although Ghoshe’s family members knew about the torture, fearing the wrath of Jadhav’s exorcising powers, they re-

At Churchgate, a child stands about begging in the hope that someone will fill his hungry tummy.

A child at Worli works at a roadside eatery among many others like him.

Children’s Day: Really?

In spite of an act against Child Labour and the various protests against the enslavement of children across the nation, we seem to be far from achieving a zero-child labour scenario. While Pandit Nehru, whose birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day, dreamed of a nation that respects its children, looks at them with dignity and pins its hopes on them, the picture today sadly is nowhere close to the India of his dreams. Children across the country continue to work as labourers, lack basic educational facilites, are devoid of their fundamental rights and are taking all of this without any say. It is high time we sit up and think of these little ones as human beings and give them their right to grow up in a humane atmosphere. These two kids are seen on the roof of Borivali station, possibly unaware of the hazards of doing so.

A child at Sewree cleans a bike to earn some pennies for his daily bread and butter.

This is the most common sight at road signals. A girl tries to sell her stock near Regal Cinema in Colaba.

This picture from Lower Parel speaks volumes about how far we are from securing the lives of our children.

Like many others who work to feed their families, this little girl cleans utensils at Prabhadevi.

he Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday moved the Bombay High Court seeking the issue of a writ of mandamus (directive from the court) to the government to table the Adarsh Commission of Inquiry report along with the Action Taken Report (ATR). In an another Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed before the Nagpur bench of the Bombay HC, the party has demanded a judicial probe headed by a retired judge into what it termed as irregularities in the awarding of road work estimates in the state. Speaking to newspersons at the state party office here yesterday, state party president Devendra Fadnavis stated that as per the new amendment to the Commission of Inquiry Act, the Centre or state government cannot now seek an exten-

Commenting on the completion of three years in office for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, he commented that the Chief Minister’s tenure so far has been one where no path breaking schemes have been implemented. Replying to queries, the state BJP president remarked that the chief

Stating that the excess amount was sanctioned mostly to ruling party legislators as election funds, Fadnavis disclosed that one road in the Beed district in NCP minister Suresh Dhas’ constituency was shown broken into 19 different small segments, and on each of the segments three different contract estimates were awarded with each estimate being shown below Rs. 10 lakh.

NET/SET qualified teachers denied salary as per Sixth Pay Commission City colleges deny NET/SET qualified professors their salaries as per the Sixth Pay Commission. When asked, colleges ask professors to find alternate jobs By Yatin Ingle

C

learing the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the State Eligibility Test (SET) can no longer assure a candidate of a permanent job as a professor or a salary as per the Central Government’s Sixth Pay Commission. City colleges are now refusing to pay professors their salaries as per the Commission scale, and if professors ask for their prescribed salaries, colleges ask them to either continue with the payment they are receiving or resign and find another college to teach in. The NET and SET exams are conducted by the University Grants Commissions (UGC) and qualify a person to be a professor and Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in any university or institution

in India. According to the UGC, once a person clears these exams, he is eligible to be paid as per the Sixth Pay Commission which entitles a professor to a salary of Rs. 45,000 per month. A professor, who did not wish to be named, says, “Even though we are eligible to be paid according to the Sixth Pay Commission we are not. If we complain, the management of the college or the principal asks us to quit or accept what we are paid. This is injustice.” Last year, the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU) and the Maharashtra Federation of Universities and College Teachers' Organisation (MFUCTO), boycotted the Mumbai University exams demanding that the arrears of teachers as per the Sixth Pay Commission and the government reso-

lution be regularised. The boycott had ultimately led the varsity to reschedule the board exams. It was soon after that the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education proceeded to release the demanded arrears. When the ADC spoke to Pradeep Sawant, senate member, MU, he said, “Eligible teachers who are not paid their salaries as per the prescribed pay commission scales should file a complaint with the varsity teachers’/staff grievance cell. As soon as the complaint is filed, the varsity will carry out its inspection and if the management of a college is found guilty, action will be taken. The complainant should not be worried about his identity being disclosed as the cell will keep his or her details confidential.”

Mira Bhayandar to get fresh mangrove cover By Suresh Golani

W

hile the twin-city is rapidly turning into a concrete jungle, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has made arrangements to undertake an elaborate mangrove plantation drive along its vast coastline. As part of a pilot project, MBMC’s Tree Authority has carried out mangrove plantation in an area admeasuring 600 square meters in the Jesal Park creek area of Bhayandar (East). As per the Tree Census report which had also been commissioned to survey mangrove density across the 79.5 square kilometer region,

a total area of 29.1 sq.km area is covered by mangroves, out of which 8.4 sq.km is estimated to be on salt pan land. The bio-diversity survey conducted by Terracon Ecotech, using the satellite imagery has led to the identification of a total of 10 mangrove species in the twin-city. “Mangroves are not the only coastal vegetation but more appropriately, they are the ecosystem which is vital for the environment as well as for inhabitants,” said municipal commissioner Bharat Shitole. The MBMC has mooted a Rs.3 crore project in which six spots across the twin-city have been identified to plant and maintain mangrove saplings.

These mangrove saplings are being readied for transplantation in the newly designated areas.

GIS tree count sees significant rise

While the mangrove survey was carried out for the first time, the Tree Census, conducted for the second time after 2005, has seen a significant jump of more than 20 per cent. While a tree count of 1,89,842 was registered in the year 2005, the latest census has registered a count of 2,29,337 trees. The MBMC has also set an example by using the state of the art Geographical Information System (GIS) to effectively map and enumerate the trees in the twin-city. “We have been trying to increase tree count by distributing free saplings, tax sops to housing societies promoting a green environment, and also tree transplant process. So far we have successfully transplanted 500 trees in the region,” informed Tree Authority Superintendent, Nagesh Virkar. As per the census reports over 246 species have been identified, a rise of 12 species as compared to 234 in 2005. As per the Maharashtra Urban Areas (Protection and Preservation of Trees) Act, 1975, tree census has to be carried out every five years.

Couple posed as cops and extorted money from slum dwellers, threatening to arrest them for not having proper papers

By Suresh Golani

S

leuths of the Navghar police in Bhayandar have arrested a couple who impersonated cops to extort money from slum dwellers after accusing them of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. According to the police, Anu Mangesh Jha (35) and Rishikesh Prasad (30), posing as cops from the local police station, would barge into local slum clusters and accuse the dwellers of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. They would then demand papers to authenticate their stay in the country, which when produced, they would term as bogus and fabricated. They would then demand money to avoid arrest. In one such orchestrated raid carried out by the accused in the Ideal Park area of Mira Road on Monday, an alert resident, Abdul Aziz Mandal, found their behaviour suspicious and informed the

n a tragic incident, a young housewife drowned in a quarry pit in the Dachkulpada area of Kashimira on Tuesday morning. Rekha Rathod (21) was a native of Gulbarga in Karnataka and had come to visit her maternal relatives staying in the nearby Jai- Malhar colony. She had apparently gone to the quarry to wash clothes, when she accidentally slipped into the deep pit and drowned. Her body was recovered by local villagers after a futile three hour search by the local fire brigade personnel. A case of accidental death has been registered at the Kashimira police station in this context.

Witch hunt against Kejriwal T

he Congress and the BJP seem to be deeply concerned about the poll challenge being posed by Arvind Kejriwal. The Aaam Aadmi Party chief is creating waves in Delhi: His poll campaign has been hectic and has attracted a lot of attention. He has adopted unusual methods to conduct his poll campaign. He has been canvassing from door to door and contacting almost every voter. An impression has spread in Delhi that the promises he makes are not empty and that he will fulfil them. No wonder then that the two national parties are worried. The Congress appears to have decided to take damage control measures: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has announced that the foreign funding of Kejriwal will be probed. Kejriwal says that he has not received any money from foreign sources and that the contributions he has received are from NRIs. It is clear that the Congress Party has begun a witch hunt. The poll budget of Kejriwal is just Rs.20 crore. The Congress has over Rs.2,000 crore funds and the BJP nearly Rs.1,000 crore. Arvind Kejriwal rightly asks why no probe is being ordered into funds received by the BJP and the Congress from foreign sources. What is to be noted is that the BJP has supported the probe order by the Union Minister. Before the arrival of Kejriwal on the scene, the BJP was quite certain it would sweep the polls in Delhi. The witch hunt is not going to help the two national parties. Kejriwal has a clean record. He is fighting corruption particularly in the ruling party – the Congress – and it is likely he has a good chance of making it in the Delhi elections.

P

resident Pranab Mukherjee seems determined to dispel the popular notion that Rashtrapati Bhavan is a gilded retirement home. Even as he accepts invitations to cut ribbons and address anniversary celebrations across the length and breadth of the country, he remains engaged with the world of politics, albeit as an elder statesman or a fatherly figure with a wealth of experience. It means that he has a hectic schedule that keeps him busy. Take his recent two-day flying visit to Darjeeling and Gangtok. His twohour halt in Darjeeling spanned a protocol function where he addressed students of St. Joseph’s School on their 125th anniversary, a private lunch with West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan and a 15-minute one-on-one meeting with Gorkhaland activist Bimal Gurung. There are varying accounts of what transpired between the President and Gurung. The official version is that the Gorkha leader submitted a five-point memorandum and demanded a central university for his yet-to-be-born state. But Gurung told the press later that Mukherjee gave him political advice, telling him to return as chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. Gurung quit the GTA to renew the demand for Gorkhaland after the Congress nod to Telengana. Half an hour later, the President was in Sikkim. In the three hours between his arrival and the Governor’s banquet in his honour, Mukherjee met as many as 12 delegations of different hues and persuasions. They included two delegations that wanted him to urge the central government to recognise the 17th Karmapa and permit him to take his rightful place as head of Sikkim’s famed Rumtek Monastery. A third delegation included Congress workers who wanted a shoulder to cry on. Their complaint was that the party was virtually defunct in this tiny Himalayan state where Pawan Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Front has been ruling since 1994. Mukherjee has been clear from the beginning that he will be a constitutional President who plays by the book. So, when political delegations call on him, he listens but rarely steps out of line. Despite Mukherjee’s studied adherence to propriety, there are some who

don’t quite understand why he entertains rival political delegations. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, for instance, is reported to be unhappy over Gurung’s meeting with the President. But Mukherjee is very clear. His doors are open to all who want to meet him, provided they are part of the democratic process. If R.V. Venkatraman was a ‘thinking’ President and Abdul Kalam a ‘people’s’ President, Mukherjee will surely be remembered as a ‘political’ President.

ministry had done this to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The previous week, it couldn’t decide who would attend the NIT conference being hosted by Rashtrapati Bhavan. Raju declined on the plea that he had resigned. Tharoor was approached but he was in Paris for a UNESCO conference. And the other minister of state Jitin Prasada was in his constituency. He said he could not return in time for the conference. Mukherjee had to host the conference without a ministerial representative from the nodal ministry.

The party’s constitution was amended some years ago to limit the general secretary’s tenure to not more than three terms. So, Karat will have to make way for somebody new. LAZARUS, COME OUT! Y

OU HAVE heard the story of Lazarus — that is a story of man as such. It is said Lazarus died. Jesus loved him very much. His sisters informed Jesus; by the time the news reached him, Lazarus had been dead for four days. Jesus came running. Everybody was crying and weeping, and he said, “Don’t weep, don’t cry! Let me call him back to life!” Nobody could believe him. Lazarus is dead! And the sisters of Lazarus said, “He is now stinking — he cannot come back. His body is deteriorating.” But Jesus went to the grave where the body was preserved for him to come. The stone was pulled aside. In the dark cave Jesus called out, “Lazarus, come out! ” And it is said he came out. It may not have happened that way; it may be just a parable — but it is a beautiful parable about man. When I look into your eyes, that’s all I can say: “Lazarus, come out!” You are dead and stinking. You are not yet alive. You are born, but you need to be reborn. Your first birth has not been of much help. It has brought you to a certain extent, but that is not enough. You have to go a little further. MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2013

Another controversy over Sachin’s dismissal SACHIN’S dismissal has once again created a controversy. UDRS apart, here is an interesting question: How many batsmen, since Hawk-Eye came into use, have been wrongly declared out? To keep the list manageable only Tests and those who have scored more than 3000 runs will be considered. List the batsmen in descending order. Next, of these ‘questionable’ decisions, list the umpires involved in descending order of ‘mistakes’. Is there an umpire-player correlation? So, here is a new Sachin record – which umpire has wrongly declared Sachin out LBW, the maximum number of times? In my opinion, when Sachin is involved and the call is close, the umpire would probably vote in favour of the bowler as he can tell his grand-children that he declared Sachin out! — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

OVER the last few days especially from the start of the Calcutta test the hype about Sachin has been overwhelming. Even on social

Indian politics TWO weeks ago, I had written a letter which was published by ADC on the topic of a suspected political theory. It stated that the Congress, realising its incapability of winning the 2014 elections, has purposefully been creating a messed up India across all walks of life. This would then become a massive job for the party in power to set things right with the Congress sitting in the opposition to create more stress, thus resulting in a probable fall of that government followed by new elections and a good chance for the Congress to come back strong and in power for the sake of dynastic rule. In last week’s column by Tavleen Singh, something similar has been unearthed by her too. The time has come for all intelligent persons to see through the thin veil of hypocrisy and prepare to vote firmly and only for the right candidate. The major drawback however, is that election tickets are issued by the party to candidates selected by them. Thus, the manifesto of the party and its plans of action take a back seat and the candidate, for whatever reason, is in the driver’s seat.

GRATITUDE: Sachin should thank the various selection committees that allowed him to continue playing for 24 years despite his occasional bad form. networking sites and on other applications like Whatsapp, Sachin has got good space and is still continuing. In fact one of the messages doing the rounds makes a pointed comment at the Human Resources (HR) department that the HRs of each organisation should learn from the BCCI and the way the organization is

bidding adieu to Sachin. A few HRs retaliated by saying, “For that, you should work consistently for 24 years.” I however say that this is not for his consistent game but for encashment, so that the BCCI can take as much as it pleases from this hero’s fame and fans. This is not the result of the BCCI’s attachment for Sachin, but for the money that made them hike the ticket rates for the match. The BCCI could have in fact slashed the rates for Sachin’s fans, but that would be fool’s idea, now wouldn’t it? — Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara

THE eulogies on the ‘Little Master’, Sachin Tendulkar, have reached a saturation point in the ADC, with the same writer sometimes amusingly showering praise on him one day and criticising him on another day! Be that as it may, the ‘God’ of cricket needs to be thankful to the various selection committees of the BCCI which kept giving their nod to his inclusion in Team India all these 24 years, and the

ties including the BJP and the Congress, who are the main beneficiaries of foreign funds running into thousands of crores, for last several years. Both the BJP and the Congress must stop this political stunt of tracking foreign funds and concentrate on their own wrongdoings rather than attacking the AAP for their own selfish personal and political gains. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

TEEMING with inequality the city serves up the sight of a woman with a grubby child at her hip begging at swanky car windows or tugging at one’s clothes is common. So, it was more of the cricket establishment giving him the longest run than his giving his 24 years to the game. Also, if any other great player like, say, Dravid, had been allowed to stay in the game for so long, perhaps he would have also done equally well. indicating that our crowd did not want to see the weak West Indies playing but were more interested in seeing the Little Master scoring. When he was declared out LBW to Shillingford, the cricketing controversies erupted as in the past. In the late 1990s when Tendulkar was leading the Indian side and was declared out LBW for a ball that struck him on the helmet, we brought the house down stating that there was no chance of the ball hitting him. Sachin is short enough and hence the LBW decision was upheld. Again, when Jonty Rhodes took a blinder in the backward point position diving (a trap laid for Tendulkar as he used to play uppish on the up) we contested that the catch was taken off the ground. Again, the LBW decision raised eyebrows as in the past. Why is there so much partiality, that when Sachin is foxed and caught on the wicket shuffling, we try to give a new look to the laws of cricket? Somehow, we can not understand why his fans and the media behave indifferently time and again and bring up the issue. After all an umpire’s decision is final and players should walk away instead of staying back and courting controversies. —Subramaniam C Krishnan, Chennai

Anand to Sachin. Chess is all about intelligence and Anand is the undisputed King of the world of Chess and is perhaps the brainiest sportsmen the world has ever witnessed. There is not much money in chess like there is in cricket, but Anand has never cribbed about monetary gains and although the prize money this time is staggering, chess players have to keep a big support staff considering the demands of the game. Anand is also at the fag end of his career and will retire soon. It would be icing on the cake for this great sportsmen if he happens to win the ongoing World Chess Championships before calling it quits. Here’s wishing Anand good luck and hoping that the Govt. of India treats Anand’s achievement on par with Sachin’s, as his exploits and laurels for our nation are no less than that of Sachins. — S.N. There are five buildings, and in each of them on the top floors, there are flats deemed illegal and liable for demolition, a total of 96 apartments bound for the hammer. To their credit, both the police and the civic staff displayed tremendous patience. The first refusals to open the gate, chained and padlocked, were met with repeated admonitions. After long hours of negotiations, rounds of speeches and heated arguments, teams of BMC officials, each assigned to a building, managed to gain entry into the compound from a side entrance in the afternoon at around 3.30 pm. Their aim was to submit the premises scheduled to be brought down to a last inspection. Meanwhile at the main gate the residents of Campa Cola Compound continued to fortify the entrance with a human chain and kept their vehicles parked in the driveways to the buildings to block ingress by the bulldozers standing menacingly outside. Outside the gates, the police politely but firmly picked up the politicians, including legislator (and builder) Mangalprasad Lodha, civic Law Committee Chairman Makarand Narvekar and Shaina NC of the BJP, and moved them some distance away. From the morning, they had not allowed any one to go inside the compound. In an attempt to buy time and hinder the demolition, Narvekar demanded the municipal commissioner’s personal presence before the gates were opened. Civic officials explained that they were armed with the Supreme Court order to demolish the illegal apartments and it was not necessary for the commissioner to come. Narvekar then demanded that Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani come there. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kishor Kshirsagar who was in charge of the operation explained the facts to political leaders. There were at least five rounds of negotiations between the civic officials and residents and politicians. With pressure mounting, Kshirsagar finally called a Senior Police Inspector and directed him use force to open up the gates and get past the human chain behind them.Police

also warned political leaders to make way or be confronted with force and later, arrest. When there was again no response, the leaders were picked up bodily and carried to the waiting police vans. Late in the afternoon, one of the buildings, Midtown Apartments, finally allowed the team of civic officials to come in. The other buildings refused them entry. DMC Kshirsagar then warned that if the gates were not opened, he would bring up the JCB (earth movers) against them. There was no reply from the silent residents. The huge machines were brought right up to the gates. Lodha requested the DMC for “some time”. Most of the time, politicians were threatening civic officials with law and order situations. After 90 minutes of negotiation another four teams of civic officials were allowed inside from other entry points. By 5 pm, DMC Kshirsagar said, “We have cut off water, gas and electricity lines. We are following the court (Supreme Court) orders.” Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani said, “The civic body will register FIRs against people who obstructed the on-going work of civic officials at the spot.” The police and the civic staff began to disperse. Even the residents gradually disappeared, many into their almost empty apartments, there to spend a sleepless night and face another day fraught with emotion. For the present, the battle is over. HAPPY CHILDREN’S DAY! With Children’s Day just a day away, educationists take a moment to share their dreams, hopes and wishes for children

KNOW YOURSELF

Rajani Pattabhiraman, Principal, EuroSchool Thane The smile of a child can show heaven on earth. The twinkle in their eyes can still us for ages. On Children’s day, dear Children, I wish all of you tonnes of happiness and an everlasting beautiful twinkle in your eyes. The children of today are far more intelligent than the earlier generations. They are amidst a lot many distractions and surrounded by people with a whole lot of expectations on them. Isn’t it a challenge to be a child today? I wish to share with all the children two secrets of being happy and successful. • Look into yourself. It is important to realise one’s own potential. Take time to understand the innate potential in you. Explore and exploit it to the utmost. Success will be in your lap. As you look at the person in front of you, look for the good in him/her. You will certainly find at least one quality worth admiring. This habit will spread love and happiness all over. When you know yourself and love others around you, the smile and twinkle in your eyes will remain forever. Let us, adults, accept our children with gratitude because they are a blessing and a reflection of God’s opinion that the world should go on.

A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE DIFFERENTLY ABLED

Surabhi Verma, Director of Sparsh for Children Children are considered blessings in our culture. Parents dream of their child doing something great in their life and achieving the impossible. Does this change, when the parents get to know that the child has some special needs? We fail to be there for them when all they need is someone to care for them, just as all of us ‘normal’ people do. Although the parents do feel at a loss, many of us worry about the child’s future, but the important thing is the present. What we do now and how we help our child at this very moment will help them be independent in the future. I want our children to get the right help, support, love and guidance from family, school and environment to achieve whatever they are capable of. I wish parents should always be ensured that their kids get the right education and help them make their future brighter. If Einstein who had special needs had not gotten the right opportunity, our science would not have been this advanced. Thus I hope that our children with special needs would not be considered any less and be as cherished, accepted and respected as any other child.

CHILDREN NEED TO BE TREASURED

Grace Pinto, Managing Director, Ryan International Group of Institutions “Every child you encounter is a divine appointment” – This quote of Wess Stafford, President, Compassion International, beautifully signifies that children are precious gifts of God and there is a divine purpose that endows us with a responsibility to give them a better life and a better future. Children’s Day is a reminder that children are entitled to education, recreation, health care, economic and social needs in order to live their childhood to the fullest. They should not be deprived of their childhood as it is the best part of human life; it is the essence of life; the foundation of the rest of human life. J.F. Kennedy, 35th US president has quoted it rightly, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Therefore, children need to be treasured. Today I exhort the fortunate children and their parents to make some time to visit the less privileged children to bring smiles on their faces. It will be a wonderful gesture and a special gift for them. On your part dear children you need to obey your parents and honour them. Do not succumb to the challenges of times, but with confidence march forward and be victorious. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”

CHILDHOOD IS PARAMOUNT AND MUST BE CELEBRATED

Finbarr O’regan, Principal, Ecole Mondiale World School The entire nation celebrates national significant days like Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Children’s Day is also one of those noteworthy days to be celebrated on November 14 every year. This day is marked to acknowledge and grant tribute to every single child in the world. Children’s Day is enunciated as an occasion for children across the globe to encourage awareness and their well-being. This day in actual sagacity is to offer social rights to the children and treat them as valuable resources as they are the hope and light for an improved and amplified tomorrow. This day coexists with the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India owing to the fact that he loved children and believed that they can do wonders for the country and can generate progress. So for me as a Principal of a school, the true quintessence of this day is to appreciate and understand the importance of childhood in our lives. Whatever they learn from us today, will be practiced by them tomorrow, so it is

I have done my graduation in Psychology and want to make my career in it. Now I am thinking about doing my MA in Psychology but am confused between Clinical, Counseling and Industrial Psychology. Which field is more in demand in India and Mumbai in particular? —Shefali Shah

Clinical Psychologists deal with concerns related to mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and so on. Counseling Psychology deals with personal and interpersonal functioning across the lifespan with a focus on emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental and organisational concerns. Industrial Psychology focuses on improving, evaluating, and predicting job performance; applies psychological principles to personnel administration management and marketing problems. There is ample scope for each field, provided you have a flair for the area and passion regarding a particular field.

I have completed my TYBA from Mumbai University. I am interested in studying Capital Markets or doing an MBA and getting work in this field. Kindly guide me as to how to pursue a career in this field. Which colleges in Mumbai provide these courses? —Gerald Pinto There are a number of programs conducted by the NSE. You can visit their website and enroll for any such program. In addition, you need to be a regular reader of financial newspapers, balance sheets of companies, business magazines and so on. Happy Children’s Day! essential for us to implement teaching methodologies, applications and technology that will mould them into a responsible and conscious citizen in the future. And as a matter of fact, childhood is paramount and must be celebrated.

EVERY CHILD MUST BE RESPECTED

Dr. (Mrs.) Veena Shrivastava, Principal – Secondary Section, Kohinoor International School I would like to wish all the kids a very happy Children’s Day on the 14th day of November. Children’s Day is a day to express our feeling of respects towards children and childhood. It is globally celebrated to honour kids on different days but in India, Children’s Day is observed on the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. Not only on this day, but always, we must remember that every child comes to this world with a message that God is not yet discouraged of man. Children are the only ray of hope to this world. Their presence makes this earth a wonderful place to live in. Children blossom our lives with their

sweet prattle, innocent actions, tender gestures and selfless attitude. As elders we must respect every child who is like a fragment of heaven on earth. We should try to retain our child-like qualities till the time we live. I would like to appeal to children to

maintain these God-gifted treasures and be away from any kind of negativity and artificiality, focus on your goals, be a useful member of society, lead a noble life and do proud not only to your family and school but to the whole nation.

What are the points to keep in mind while writing an SOP to apply to a UG course in the UK? —Sameer The statement of purpose (SOP) is one of the most important aspects of your application. Starting off with the basics, what is a statement of purpose? It is a well-written essay detailing your reasons for applying to a specific course in the UK. Since most courses in the UK are extremely specialised and streamlined, the university wants to know about your interests, and at the same time, they want to get to know you as a person. There are few questions that your SOP should answer: How did you get interested in the course? What have you studied in high school that ties into the course? What have you done in terms of your extracurricular activities that will be an asset to you in college? What are some of your future goals? Why do you want to study in UK? When you have finished writing your SOP, make sure that all these questions have been answered. In some cases the SOP will have a word limit, so make sure you check that before you begin. Good luck! Besides a portfolio, what are some of the other things I need to have ready to apply for an undergrad course in fashion the US? —Nikita

If you are looking for further studies in fashion and design, there are several universities in the US that you could consider. Most universities in the US will require 16 years of education. The programs are very specialised so you should be sure of what you want to study. Some of the universities that you could research are Parsons - New School, SCAD, Rhode Island School of Design, SAIC and Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. There are a few things that the colleges will require regardless of the course that you apply for. An application form, TOEFL scores, a detailed

resume, a statement of purpose that will give them an understanding of your experience in the field both in and out of the classroom as well as your future goals will be required. You will also have to submit a portfolio, recommendation letters as well as your transcripts. In some cases for the fashion management courses the GRE might be recommend.

ne of my favourite restaurants in the city has got to be Moshe’s Restaurant at Cuffe Parade. What I like best about this place is the dessert section which includes a good variety with the right amount of sweetness and variations in texture. However, I find the main course rather average. This is a simple place with non-intrusive Albana Khatri décor which lets you concentrate on the food rather than anything else. It is also strategically located. It is definitely value for money considering the good quality food they offer. I only wish the over all menu had more to offer patrons.

I

did my Master’s degree in Zoology from the Institute of Science, Mumbai University from 1995-1997 and a Masters in Management Studies from MET, Bandra from 1997-1999. The Institute of Science Mumbai, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Science (RIS) was established in 1920. It has beautiful architecture and is located in the busy Colaba-Fort area of South Mumbai. It is one of the oldest institutions in Mumbai for Science and is housed in a beautiful old stone structure with a botanical garden and lots of trees around. MET, Mumbai is a modern building, built recently. However it has recreation areas nearby to unwind. I did a lot of group studies and presentation practices there since the space has something positive about it. The conference rooms are equipped with the latest audio-visual facilities and learning aids to create a quasi-corporate ambience. A hi-tech convention center for seminars and management workshops helped me to add value to the course I was a part of. E-enabled libraries that dock over 26,000 books, 200 periodicals and 30,000 international online magazines and databases, made available a lot of information that helped me to add value to my presentations and score well. I was pretty excited about the first day and was eager to know what was in store for me. We had an orientation program for the first couple of hours before classes started and had the opportunity to meet our fellow students which really helped me to understand and ready myself for the course. All my professors were always available whenever we needed them and were ready to help us throughout the course. There were a couple of professors who would use a lot of practical examples and teach us so that the subject would become easy for us to understand and learn. I always looked forward to attending their lectures and would never miss them. I was very clear about my goal and did pretty well. But at MET we had a 42 subject course

which included a lot of theories and had to complete it in 2 years. So I made sure I concentrated on my studies. When I was studying in the Institute of Science, I used to travel by the local train and when I was at MET I lived in a private hostel near the college <<Vinod and would therefore walk to Gaikwad college. Prior to that, I stayed at GCH i.e. Government College Hostel at Churchgate. I found this to be a good experience that helped me to become independent and taught me to maintain a balance between studies, family, fun and friends. College life for me has been more about studies rather than bunking and wasting time. I used to concentrate on my studies as I was very focused about my career. I was very passionate about photography and have still maintained that. When I was at MET, the one place we used to hang out was Hearsch Bakery and Venus Bakery – mostly for the rum balls – which were the best in town. We would pick up food from Hearsch Bakery and walk all the way to Bandstand and sit by the sea to enjoy a good meal. When I was graduating, we were almost 40-50 people in a group, but during MET days we were a close group of 8-10 friends who would hang out together all the time. However, I wasn’t all that good. I have played pranks too. I would get sneezers when I was studying in the Institute of Science and would offer my handkerchief sprinkled with sneezers to my fellow mates and set a trap for them so that they would keep sneezing persistently through the day. This was exceptionally fun for me when we had to dissect rabbits and rats. I would also play around with different chemicals to see if I could create something different. In college one of our friends had got a new bike and we were all thrilled to ride it.

As the healthcare sector grows with emerging new treatments and technological advances, Healthcare Management is fast becoming a necessity, writes Dr. Harish Sihare, Associate Professor, Goa Institute of Management. The global health scape is fast changing with new challenges of competition, and new emerging formats in health services. The responsibilities of professionals and the dynamic environmental pressures on them have increased their need to be effective. Healthcare professionals in managerial roles in various healthcare institutions are senior clinicians or professionals without management education with vast clinical

However, one of my friends did not know how to ride the bike very well and I kept telling him not to venture out on it since it was a new bike. He did not listen to me and tasted his own medicine when he went down with the bike, fortunately not hurting himself or damaging the vehicle. Education has helped me to grow and learn a lot of things that I have been applying in my current field of work. It has helped me to gain

a lot of knowledge and understand people and markets better. I believe that learning never ends in life. Everyday teaches you something new and you learn and unlearn from your experiences. But yes, education plays a very important part in all our lives and I would like to request every parent to educate their children, because education is extremely important in today’s world. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

experience and promoted to their respective managerial positions by virtue of their seniority. Managerial education is not compulsory in their career path before taking up such positions, even though managerial knowledge, skills and competencies are absolutely necessary for such positions, to be successful. Knowledge of Financial Management, Materials Management, Organisational Behaviour, Human resource, Legal issues, Communication and Interpersonal relations etc. is absolutely important for efficient management practice, which are grossly found to be inadequate and is reflected in the performance and productivity of the Healthcare institutions. In today’s dynamic environment and rapidly changing face in healthcare, corporate hospitals as well as government organisations need professionals who are not only efficient but also effective. The responsibilities of professionals and the dynamic environmental pressures on them have increased their need to be effective. Competent professionals are required at national, state, district and block level for effective planning, implementation and monitoring of action plans.

with various stakeholders. What’s the job? The job of a Healthcare Manager depends upon the industry in which he/she is working. FRESHMENTORS.COM’S ADMISSION HELP

November–December are the most crucial months for students applying to foreign universities. Freshmentors.com, a recently launched online portal designed for prospective college students, aims to provide all possible authentic information before a student takes admission. Freshmentors.com provides relevant and personal college counseling at extremely affordable price. Approximately 450 colleges have Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA) plans and with most students prepping to apply for EA / ED by November, Freshmentors.com can be a boon to such students. ED/EA applications are typically for students who have researched colleges extensively and understand which college would be the best fit for them. Both EA and ED applications communicate a candidate’s sincerity and keen interest in that university/program. The option to apply as an EA or ED candidate only applies to US universities. Students can choose to apply to any one university as Early Action (EA) & Early Decision (ED) and the deadline to submit for the same is usually in November, almost a month before general admission deadlines. EA and ED are different and have different legal liabilities. Submitting an application under Early Decision, would legally bind the student to accept if an admission offer was made to the candidate. Unlike ED, Early Action is not legally binding. EA and ED is a great way for students to make the process of admission less stressful – since they are able to get a decision on their application much faster. Freshmentors.com can help students properly research universities and understand which college is the best fit for them before they apply for EA/ED. The portal works like a buddy/mentoring programme where aspiring students from India are connected to highachieving college students at their target universities in USA, Canada and Singapore.

Life in a Consulate

Working in a consulate at the age of 22 is as good as any great travel experience, says Naressa Coutinho, while she shares a first-hand account of her experiences

W

hen I walked into the well-lit, spacious room, where I would be interviewed, I had butterflies in my tummy and suddenly sweaty palms. My resume did paint a pretty picture but everything about the consulate made me feel like a puppy in a den. My interviewers walked in; one of them being the Consul-general himself. I barely remember what proceeded after that, but my first day at work, in the consulate, was the happiest day of my life. This might sound too cliché but I had always wanted to work in an Embassy or consulate and many of my relatives told me that the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) was the ideal way. Somehow, this path did not appeal. I never imagined though, that by simply learning a language, I would stand a chance in a Consulate. It was, in fact, my knowledge of a foreign language that gave me an edge over the other candidates. Every post in a diplomatic mission is advertised on their website and in national newspapers. These posts are either contractual or permanent. You will have to meet the criteria for recruitment first, which mostly requires the applicant to be a citizen of the country where the foreign mission is set up. They work on a point system where your score would depend on your education qualification, work experience and interview. You may have to give a test or essay depending on the system followed by each diplomatic mission. This is usually the tough part but once selected, life is beautiful. What is the job? Well, if you are looking at countries like USA and UK that have many departments

<<Naressa Coutinho and a huge staff, then your options are plenty. You may be hired in any of the departments handling politics, media and communications, trade, etc. However not all countries maintain multiple departments and often try to work with a small staff where duties are miscellaneous. I, for one, was appointed as an assistant, handling administrative duties, visa procedures and interpretations. The exciting bits included spotting fake passports and interviewing suspicious applicants. Lunches were a cultural fest and work was a fun place to be. Working with a consulate

guarantees work-life balance and a serene working environment. You work 40 hours a week that includes your lunch break. Moreover, employee satisfaction is at the top of their agenda. They have maternity benefits, gap years and other facilities. In the event that you have to work extra hours, you are duly compensated for, with more leaves. These may be called either ‘earned leaves’ or ‘day off in lieu’. Some European embassies and consulates may even work lesser hours during summers. Comfortable working hours with a hefty paycheck is an added bonus but again this would vary from country to

country. Your appointment letter is mostly dollar-friendly and so every month you have to pray that Obama does not disturb the market with his benevolent policies. Like me, if you were to join the sweet life at a consulate, be sure to bookmark the ONDA site (currency convertor). Besides, working with foreign nationals and diplomats teaches you a lot about their culture and ways. You get to meet dignitaries and foreign diplomats from other countries at events and on special occasions. In my six months with a foreign mission, I evolved as a person. People say travelling broadens your outlook on life but I can safely say that at 22, working in a consulate was as good as any great travel experience. If the ‘six months’ has got your attention, then yes the sad part about working here is that you are mostly contracted and there is no job security. If you really want to work in a consulate, aim for a permanent post. Moreover, you cannot rise in the ranks as foreign missions employ officials from their own country for top government positions. However, this is not always the case. Therefore, you might have to compromise on career growth and you could be bogged down by the static nature of your job. Look at it this way. Maybe it could be an early retirement option when you start a family and you have to juggle responsibilities. There may come a moment in your life where your career takes a back seat. This could be your next best option. It is a job many vie for and especially in a country like ours where working is a stress boogie, this is the ideal job for a stress-free life and happy living. <<Ghazal Maestros Pankaj Udhas, Bhupinder Singh & Mitali Singh spent some time with children at Each One Teach One (EOTO) Learning Centre at New Sion Municipal School yesterday. « TALKING POINT

What are we teaching our kids? By Aishwarya Aiyer

I Sachin will play his last match (200th Test Match of his career) on November 14-18 on his home ground - Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. This will be an iconic match owing to the fact that it is the last of his career! As fans of the Master Blaster wait with bated breath, city youngsters share their nostalgia. Well I think it’s the right time for him to retire as his career has been an exciting one as he has achieved a lot at his young age as well as at present and now I feel he has found his identical follower Virat Kohli. I am not going to miss him. He has done his best till now. Now it’s time for others to show their best. —Shrutti Sampat K.C. College

I have seen people fight over his retirement. Sachin has been like a God to every lay man in India. I have a friend who says that he might cry watching Sachin play the last match.

—Sagar Desai Advertising Professional

All good things come to an end – it’s Sachin this time. I wouldn’t call him God, but he truly was sent to earth to play cricket and has made the most of it. I will surely miss him in action. On a side note: the whole ticket fiasco is a big problem, Sachin is as much a hero of the poor as he is of the rich, then why can only people with money see his last match? —Jigar Shah Business Consultant

I used to teach a child whose mother would always come to me after class had ended and say, “I would have taught this better.” While I initially took her comments seriously, I realised over time that her son was not doing the homework I asked him to. When I told her about it she would say, “Yes I know. He didn’t have the time to.” I seethed with anger then because I could see that the child was paying me less attention. I later realised that this was because his mother always spoke to me in front of her son letting him know what she thought of me and my teaching abilities and allowing him to do the same. Teachers, today, do not get the respect they deserve. Children and their parents consider it a mere job being done for money. However, I think parents need to explain to their children that respect is important, because ultimately what you teach comes back to you. << Children of the NGO Vatsalya foundation at Anand Niketen George V Memorial in Mahalaxmi celebrated Children’s Day yesterday

GOODBYE SACHIN

’ve been truly concerned about the way the younger generation is dealing with people around them and I find their behaviour rather cryptic. I am 17 years old and very often hear people telling me, “In our generation, it was different,” and I wonder what is so different. A little girl who was travelling in the same bus as me some time ago was asked by the conductor about where she wanted to go. She playfully replied that she didn’t know and turned astonishingly, to her mother and said, “He is mad.” I was aghast. This should not have happened. A 6-year-old saying such things didn’t seem right to me. While we all get angry and anxious, this was not the way a child should have behaved. A father once told me that his teenaged son was intolerant. He added that no one in his home screamed at each other, nei-

ther was there any discontent in the family. I explained to him that these actions seemed normal for any teenager, but he refused to agree with me and asked me to point out the factors that determined his son’s behaviour. That’s when I was compelled to state certain examples which I am mentioning here. When your child tries to overpower you when he or she is young, don’t be proud. This just means that he or she is trying to feel superior to you and is hence trying to pull you down. When you fight with your neighbour, conductor, grocer or anyone lower than you in strata, your child learns to hurt the weak. No child ever learns to smoke or drink from the moment he is born, but it starts when you are watching a film with him where the protagonist smokes or drinks, and you keep mum about it. When your actions don’t match what you preach, your child is bound to pick up the wrong ideas.

FY14 guidance: Based on the strong 2QFY14 performance, Divi’s expects FY14E revenue to grow by 15-20 percent (15 percent guided earlier), with FY15E growth expected above 20 percent. Capacity utilization at DSN SEZ would continue to ramp-up aided by FDA approval of the remaining 3 blocks (inspection in 4QFY14E). The management has indicated that current high EBITDA margin for the quarter are not sustainable and has guided for 1QFY14 level of 38 percent as a benchmark. Based on 2QFY14 results, we have raised our FY14E EPS estimates by 7 percent to reflect stronger operational performance, but have largely retained FY15E estimates which already factor-in the outlook shared by the management. We estimate 20 percent revenue CAGR, 22 percent EBITDA & EPS CAGR over FY13-15E with EBITDA margins between 39 percent-40 percent. The stock trades at 17.4x FY14E and 15.2x FY15E earnings. We re-iterate our Buy rating with a TP of INR1,340 (20x FY15E EPS), an upside of 31 percent from current levels. Divi’s Labs continues to be one of our top picks in the mid cap pharma space.

India Infoline calls a ‘Buy’ on Crompton Greaves CMP: Rs. 103 Target Rs. 135

Crompton Greaves’ (CRG) 2QFY14 results indicate an improvement in underlying fundamentals despite the headline earnings miss. The trend of margin improvement in standalone power systems initiated in 1Q deepened further. Although the business faces challenges, it is definitely on the recovery path. Overseas subsidiaries have reached a position where one can look beyond current losses. Although upgrades to our earnings estimates are marginal, the confidence in positive surprise has increased. Our FY14-15 standalone margin estimates are below 2Q levels. Our price target is based on 15x FY15ii standalone earnings. We upgrade the stock to BUY. Further improvement in domestic power systems margin: Ebit margin of the standalone power systems business improved 130bps QoQ to 9.4%, with exports contributing ~33% to revenue (including deferred revenue of Rs700m from 1Q). Management said that exports would sustain the current run-rate of ~Rs2bn. The 48% YoY decline in order inflows of domestic power systems highlights revenue challenges. First small signs of turnaround for overseas subs: Constant currency revenue for overseas subsidiaries declined ~5% YoY. However, the subsidiaries achieved Ebitda breakeven after four quarters. Except Canada and the US, power systems businesses in other countries reported profit during Q2. For the full year, management expects the overseas subsidiaries to report profit. Although risks remain, medium-term outlook on overseas subsidiaries is turning positive. At the least, overseas operations have stabilised at a level where one can look beyond the current losses.

Angel Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on IL&FS Transportation CMP: Rs. 115 Target Rs. 156

For 2QFY2014, IL&FS Transportation Networks (ITNL) reported a mixed set of numbers, which were above our estimates on the profitability front. The company reported a poor performance on the top-line front owing to slow execution; however due to better-than-expected operational performance and lower tax rate, earnings were ahead of our estimate. With the company being a market leader in its segment, having a robust order book and diversified portfolio, we believe it is well placed to leverage on the upcoming opportunities in the road sector. Strong operational performance led to PAT growth: ITNL’s consolidated revenues for the quarter came in at Rs1,341cr, registering a decline of 2.2% yoy, and was lower than our estimate of Rs1,485cr. The EBITDA margin for the quarter came in at 37.2%, a growth of 419/136bp on a yoy/qoq basis and was above our estimate of 32.0%. This was mainly on account of (a) higher share of finance income, (b) increase in BOT toll/annuity revenue due to operation of some BOT projects and (c) lower input cost during the quarter. The interest cost increased by 29.3% yoy to Rs363cr in 2QFY2014 and was above our estimate of Rs324cr. On the earnings front, ITNL reported a PAT of Rs111cr (our estimate was Rs107cr) in 2QFY2014; owing to better-thanexpected operational performance and lower effectively tax rate (16.2%). Outlook and valuation: Going forward, we expect ITNL to report a revenue CAGR of 9.5% over FY2013-15. This would be on the back of an order book of Rs13,000cr, indicating order book-to-sales ratio of 2.0x trailing revenues. We have revised our FY2014E and FY2015E EPS to Rs30.1/share and Rs32.3/share respectively. The stock trades at a P/BV of 0.6x and 0.5x for FY2014E and FY2015E, respectively. We recommend a Buy rating on the stock with a SOTP-based target price of Rs 156.

Expressing optimism that there could be some recovery, Mathur said, “If you look at the overall rate of decline in car sales this fiscal, it is gradually reducing. The rural demand is the bright spark but we don’t know if this could be sustained. At the current rate of improvement, he said, car sales during this fiscal could at least match last fiscal’s number; otherwise if demand softens again, growth will be in negative territory.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Mauritius-Routed Global Investments Into India Dip To 15%

Amid tax treaty uncertainties, India’s share of the number of investments made by global companies through Mauritius has almost halved in the past two years even as Africa’s share has surged significantly. Africa now accounts for over 50 % of the total number of investments made through Mauritius, while India’s share has fallen to just about 15 %. Negotiations to amend the Indo-Mauritius tax treaty have been hanging fire for many months amid India’s apprehensions that the pact is being misused to route unaccounted money and evade taxes. While Mauritius says it has strict checks and balances in place, uncertainties over the tax treaty have adversely affected investment flows between the two nations.

Fund Mop-Up Via Institutional Investors Rises To Rs 5,401 Crore

Fund raising by Indian companies through issue of shares to institutional investors jumped over four-fold to Rs 5,401 crore in the first half of the current financial year. According to a report by Prime Database, companies mopped-up a total of Rs 5,401 crore via institutional investors during the sixmonths ended September 30, 2013, as compared to Rs 1,243 crore raked in the year-ago period. Of the total funds raised, Rs 4,180 crore was garnered through Institutional Placement Programme (IPP) and the remaining Rs 1,222 crore through Qualified Institutional Placements (QIPs). The increase in funds raised through the IPP route was mainly due to 10 companies opting the route to comply with Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (Sebi) minimum public shareholding norms, the report said. The largest IPP was that of realty major DLF for Rs 1,863 crore while the largest QIP was from ING Vysya Bank which fetched Rs 881 crore, it added.

An amount of Rs 1,129 crore will be provided for the second phase of campus development at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad.Further, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will rovide Rs 829 crore for the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Programme, the statement added .The objective of the Tamil Nadu programme is to support policy implementation to improve the investment climate in Tamil Nadu, thereby easing business hurdles for foreign investors. Controversies Associated With IPL Unfortunate: Nooyi

The controversies associated with IPL are ‘unfortunate’ but Pepsi will continue to be the title sponsor of T20 league, says PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi. “Now if IPL went through controversies, it’s unfortunate. Nobody likes any sport tainted at all because sport is supposed to be above all of it. But again it is being addressed, Nooyi told PTI. Terming IPL as a ‘phenomenal marketing vehicle’, she said the company hopes that issues related with the tournament would be addressed. “So our hope is that something wonderful as IPL is not impacted due to those issues and we hope it would get addressed,“ Nooyi said. Last year, PepsiCo had pipped telecom major Bharti Airtel to become the new title sponsor of the IPL with a winning bid of Rs 396.8 crore for the five seasons, starting 2013. This year IPL was hit by spot fixing controversies involving two teams — Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.

Over 34,000 PSU Bank Branches Set To Lose Windows XP Support By A Business Reporter

O

ver 34,000 branches of Indian public sector banks would become vulnerable as the popular Windows XP operating system would no longer be supported by Microsoft in about 150 days, shows a study conducted by the software giant. The study on the Indian banking sector, conducted by Ascentius Consulting on behalf of Microsoft, said penetration of Windows XP in the sector is as high 70 %. “Some 34,115 Indian PSU bank branches are at risk, thanks to their reliance on Windows XP. Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft, beginning April 8, 2014, but the study shows that the penetration of Windows XP in the bank-

ing sector is still high at 40-70 %, Microsoft said in a release. Amongst the greatest risks facing banks that maintain their Windows XP installations, despite the end of support, are their ability to respond to customers and manage waiting times, it added. “The fiscal impact of this could be as much as a loss of business opportunity worth Rs 1,100 crore in a day and a loss of income worth Rs 330 crore over a period of 3 days (assuming that a major incident may take 3 days for the systems to come up to normal functioning), the study said. A large number of branches that rely on XP, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas may go down and therefore completely “deny service to customers, it said.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Let not obstacles deter you from the pursuit of your objective. Avoid speculative trading specifically for a loss is foreseen. This is the time to go slow and keep abreast with the changing scene. You will safeguard your interests by lying low, and by avoiding bringing about any change in your work strategy. Try to listen rather than speak out and repent. Listen to the views of someone who genuinely has your interest at heart.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): A slight slip-up could hold up the signing of a new contract. You will have to be quick in seeking help. You must also try to think out of box and you will find various options that can make this proposal a money spinner. Go ahead you will not regret your choice. Insecurities creep into a relationship that has weathered earlier storms. Perhaps you need more time together for reassurances and building trust in each other once again.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Stay out of controversies. Financial benefits need to be used as quickly as possible or put away safely. There are some who may try to tap you for a loan. Do not get persuaded by them. Be gentle but firm in saying no as this could lead to a monetary loss. It could also affect relationships. You share a good rapport with your beloved that makes your relationship tender and romantic Expect a pleasant surprise this evening.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): In a discussion, be patient and try not to argue. A career change is also indicated, but the benefits may not be immediate. Patience and forbearance now will be rewarding later. There could be some good news concerning a youngster. Encourage those who look up to you. For the single a person you know has been a lot on your mind of late. There is no harm in making the first move to be touch. You can expect a warm response.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Secrecy is the key to success and hence you are required to maintain complete confidentiality about your plans. Do not take opposition lightly for there are strong elements working against you and if you are not on guard, you could very well suffer a setback, which could wipe out all the gains made earlier.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): You will be surprised at some unexpected gains that are likely to come your way. Bide your time for any new investment. A minor health problem could be irritating. Take time off to devote to a personal interest to relax. Besides you may not have called or spoken to someone who loves you and is waiting.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): You benefit from short-term deposits. If you are acting on someone’s advice for fresh investments follow it completely. By interfering you could lose out on profit. Be diplomatic for your rashness in saying things without thinking can get you in a tight spot. A Personal bond that caused pain will now get better. It is up to you to now decide what the future of this association will be.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): This is the right time to ask for help if you need it. Adjustments are necessary almost at every level. You must adapt to some things that you cannot change. Do not be rigid and accept readily with grace. Use your money wisely, for there may be several demands. A long distance journey to a pilgrim spot or the need to meet a person you look up to is likely. The need to get an unbiased opinion about your affairs is strong.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Your hard work now pays you rich dividends. If working as a free lancer, or independently you will be making substantial money in commission. Some of you may decide to take up a job that will be favorable. Good savings, and encouragement from a loving mate, will make it possible for you to fulfill a long cherished dream together.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Problem in communication could have you rescheduling your day. You will encounter some problems at work as a result. Wait until the afternoon for matters to resolve themselves before you get rattled and voice your discomfort. Plan your further work schedules. In personal relationships avoid confrontations in your own interest. Minor upsets in love are to be tackled diplomatically and gently.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Some good is likely to turn up out of the blue. You can seek the advice of an expert to arrive at decisions, but do not delay the signing of an agreement. You might not be given a second chance to re-consider. Try to close this project as soon as possible for only then you can make profit. Your romantic aspirations could be crushed. Family or friends may not approve of your choice of partner.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You will come across a lucrative deal with prospects of immediate benefits. But you should guard against disgruntled elements that could cause trouble. Try to handle your work independently to avoid any mischief from others. A relaxed evening at home will make you feel better. A surprise phone call or message will set your heart aflutter. Romance is in the air and you can expect exciting moments of ardor.

ONDON: Novak Djokovic has set his sights on following his successful defence of the ATP World Tour Finals by leading Serbia to glory in the Davis Cup final. Djokovic won the prestigious season-ending Tour Finals for the third time with a dominant 6-3 6-4 victory over world number one Rafael Nadal at the O2 Arena in London yesterday. The 26-year-old has played some of the best tennis of his life since losing the US Open final against Nadal in September and Monday’s win was his 22nd successive match victory — a run that has brought him titles in Beijing, Shanghai, Paris and now London. But, although Djokovic could be forgiven for wanting a wellearned holiday after such an intense period, the world number two has no time to rest on his laurels because he will now fly to home to Belgrade to prepare for the Davis Cup final clash against holders Czech Republic, which starts on Friday. Serbia last won the Davis Cup in 2010 and Djokovic would dearly love to repeat that triumph. “It’s a fact that it’s been a very long season

for me and I’m exhausted in every way. But God knows if we’re going to have as a country another opportunity like this to win a Davis Cup title at home,” Djokovic said. “We have very tough opponents,

the defending champions, but the Davis Cup is the only team competition in our sport that brings the best possible energy and willpower in me. “I’m going to do my best to recover the next three days and get

ready for that one.” Once Djokovic has finished with his national service, he will finally be able to put his feet up and reflect on a year that brought him joy and despair in equal measure. After winning the Australian Open for the fourth time in January, he suffered a frustrating semi-final loss to Nadal at the French Open — the one Grand Slam title he has never won. That was followed by a Wimbledon final defeat against Andy Murray and another painful loss at Nadal’s hands in the US Open that eventually led to the Spaniard replacing Djokovic at the top of the world rankings. To a less mentally tough character, those setbacks could have been devastating, but for Djokovic they have simply provided the motivation for his splendid late-season resurgence. “Next to the run that I had in 2011, this is definitely the second best I’ve had,” Djokovic said. “For me, the most positive thing is the fact that I managed to regroup after a few big losses to Nadal, especially at Roland Garros and the US Open final.

ALYANI: The Maharashtra Under-14 boys, riding on Kamran Ansari’s finishing skills, came up with another commanding performance to defeat Delhi 2-1 and book a place in the quarter-finals of the AIFF Under14 National Football Championships underway in Kalyani on Tuesday. With both teams needing a win to qualify from Cluster VI, it was Maharashtra who began on an attacking note and scored even before the Delhi players had got into their paces. Latching on to a pass from from Pranav Kanse in the 2nd minute, Ansari slotted home after getting past a couple of defenders. Ansari made it 2-0 in the 10th minute, this time curling in a free kick from about 30 yards out.Though the Delhi lads regrouped, they found it very difficult to breach the Maharashtra defence, where Krish Parekh had an exceptional game. Maharashtra ended up playing the last few minutes with ten men as they had made all their substitutions and Krish Parekh couldn’t carry on due to injury. This enabled the Delhi team to pull one back in the 90th minute with Dasgupta getting on the score sheet. Coach Augusto was happy with the team’s performance. “We played well and stuck to our game plan. Kamran, Clivert and Krish had excellent games and the team defended very well, ” he said.

The 36-year-old stalwart from Tamil Nadu was a bit too tentative initially and was down 2-4 in the opening set. Even in the seventh game, she trailed before she hit back tellingly to take four games in a row. As she led 2-1 in the second set, she appeared to be coasting to com-

the next game to let Sneha back into the match. However, she recovered in time to put her fighter and younger opponent out to move into the last 16. Qualifier Riya Bhatia, from Delhi, sent her rival fourth seeded Shweta Rana chasing from one corner to the other with a flurry of forehand and double-handed drives before she won 6-2, 6-2 win. Riya next takes on Vaniya Dangwal, who got the better of Manya Nagpal 6-3, 7-5 in a closely fought tie. However, another qualifier Mumbai’s Sagrika Phadke, failed to

Aryaman Adik, Chaitanya Shah notch impressive wins M

UMBAI: Top seed Aryaman Adik and Chaitanya Shah registered impressive wins to advance to the boys’ under-15 quarter-finals, in the 70th CCI-Western India Open Squash Tournament at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday. On a day when Bombay boys dominated, Otters Club lad Adik, runner-up in the recently concluded Sub Junior & Junior Nationals at Indore, halted talented Rahil Pires of Goa with a 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 win in a tight contest. Pires, desperate to breach the barrier of established names in his category, did well right through and ran the favourite close in all three sets before crucial winners by Adik proved decisive. In contrast Bombay Gymkhana’s Shah, also one of Maharashtra’s top juniors, eased past Ancheet Desai of Goa in straight sets to set up a quarter-final with compatriot Siddhant Iyer. Local lads, Dev Vazirani of Khar Gymkhana and Aryan Parikh of

Shah in action against Goa’s Ancheet Desai.

Matunga Gymkhaha, will face each other in a mouth-watering clash. Vedant Baheti of MP and Pranav Bassi of Delhi rolled on and were joined in the quarter-finals by boys’ under-17 top seed Aishwarya Singh and Sandeep Paswan of Jindal, Ranjit Singh of UP and Maharashtra’s Yohann Surti of Willingdon Sports Club. Dutch Open winner and national runner-up Akanksha Salunkhe of Goa and Apoorva Addepalli of Chennai kicked off their campaigns in the girls section with wins. Addepalli, of Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram who trains at the Indian Squash Academy, prevailed over Sireena Divecha of Maharashtra to enter the under-17 quarter-finals where she takes on top seed and junior national semi-finalist Aishwarya Bhattacharya of Maharashtra. Akanksha’s brother Yash, a semi-finalist at Indore, also entered the boys’ under-11 quarter-finals where he set up a clash with Kanhav Nanavati of Tamil Nadu, who is seeded 3/4.

Short-pitched stuff didn’t work well against Sachin: ICC CEO

N

EW DELHI: He was behind the stumps in 10 Test matches against Sachin Tendulkar but former South African glovesman and current ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson never found Sachin Tendulkar perturbed by the raw pace and short-pitched stuff bowled by Allan Donald and Co. “What fascinated me about Sachin Tendulkar’s batting was how much he used to get hurt if he failed to score runs for India. When we first played him, he was still in his teens but he was certainly special,” Richardson, who played 42 Tests and 122 ODIs from early to mid 90’s, told PTI in an interview today. Tendulkar first toured South Africa in 1992 as a 19-year-old and Richardson distinctly remembered how the South African pacers had a strategy of “intimidating the Indian batsmen” which got them partial success but Tendulkar still managed a way to make useful contributions. “Generally, we thought it possible to intimidate the Indian batsman by bowling aggressively at them. Short-pitched stuff and aimed at the body. This worked quite well against him (Tendulkar) at least for some of the time, but he still got couple of big scores in the Tests including a wonderful 100 at the Wanderers,” the 54year-old ICC CEO recollected. For the record, Tendulkar scored 111 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg and 73 at Newlands in Capetown in that inaugural Test series between the two countries. The hallmark of Tendulkar’s batting according to Richardson was his ability to play off both front-foot and back-foot against quality pace bowling on bouncy pitches. “Unlike most of the Indian batsmen at that time, he could play off the frontfoot as well the backfoot with ease.” For Richardson, Tendulkar’s best innings was the smashing 169 at the Newlands that came in a losing cause, during India’s 1996 tour of the country. “That innings (169) at Newlands was one of the best innings I have seen. Although it came in a losing cause, his shotmaking was brilliant. He played all the shots in the book,” Richardson said. Asked about their first duel back in 1991 at the Eden Gardens, which incidentally was Richardson’s international ODI debut along with nine others (save Kepler Wessels), he fondly recollected how a then 18-yearold Tendulkar would encourage senior teammates double his age.

N

Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, Brand Ambassador for University of Wollongong (UOW) with Prof. Paul Wellings, Vice-Chancellor, UOW at Australian High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday.

EW DELHI: Drawing an analogy with Sachin Tendulkar’s masterful strokeplay, Australian great Adam Gilchrist today termed the iconic cricketer’s retirement “class timing, as usual” and said his contribution to Indian cricket goes way beyond the mountains of runs he has scored. “Now, it’s perfect as he would be playing the 200th Test match in his home ground. I think he has identified that it is the right time to go. He has not overstayed. As usual, a classic timing,” Gilchrist said. Tendulkar will call time on his glorious 24-year long international career after playing in his landmark 200th and final Test against the West Indies in Mumbai, starting on Thursday. Gilchrist said that the modern day’s greatest batsman timed his retirement well as his mere presence over the last couple of years was enough to help the youngsters. “The way Sachin has been contributing to the team it’s not always just about the runs. I think Ricky Ponting contributed well in the last few years of his career with the Australian team just by having a presence there. “The learning effect, the education and knowledge that he passes

on to young players is really great. Sachin has been a symbol of professionalism, his preparedness to commit to what he is doing, just by being present there, he had great effect on the new guys. “I am sure if you ask Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma what’s been the most valuable part of them being around Sachin Tendulkar, him scoring a hundred or him just being there, I think just to be around Sachin they would all be very excited,” Gilchrist said. Regarding the hype around Tendulkar’s retirement over the past couple of weeks, Gilchrist said, “I beg to differ. His life has been in focus and not just the last 10-15 days.“It’s amazing the way he has handled it, the scrutiny, expectations and hype.” Gilchrist is in town as brand ambassador of University of Wollongong (UOW), one of Australia’s leading research and higher education institutions, and is helping the university develop stronger ties with India. Asked to pick his most memorable moment centred around Tendulkar, Gilchrist said in a lighter vein, “Best memory was seeing him getting out cheaply in the (2003)

World Cup final in South Africa as it meant one step closer to winning.” On a serious note, ‘Gilly’ recalled the innings Tendulkar played against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1999. “It was a Boxing day Test at the MCG in 1999, Brett Lee made his debut in that match, he was charged up and was bowling at 150 kmph, it was quite dark, drizzly, conditions were overcast and the ball was moving around a lot, but Sachin just played a masterful innings (116) and kept the team in the fight. “That innings stands out in my mind. May not have been technically one of his superior knocks. Don’t know where he would personally rate the innings, but certainly it made me quickly realise, having played three four years of one-day cricket against him that he was dominating, showed his true class and how he applied himself to execute his skills in extreme pressure. Since making his international debut in 1996 to playing his last game in 2008, Gilchrist has scored around 15,000 runs across Tests and ODIs besides effecting 416 and 472 dismissals in the two formats, respectively.

Sachin’s intensity reaches 200 per cent against Pak: Raina M

UMBAI: It’s no secret that Sachin Tendulkar meticulously goes about preparing himself before every international match but ODI specialist Suresh Raina today revealed that the intensity and fierce competitiveness reaches 200 per cent when he is competing against arch-foes Pakistan. “His intensity reaches 200 per cent against Pakistan. I remember when we were playing our world cup semi-final against Pakistan in Mohali, we all were tense. It was a high-voltage match for us with Prime Ministers of both sides present. The body language of players on both the sides was aggressive. “After the toss, paaji (Sachin) had told every player to remain focussed on the job. He said ‘the wicket is good and our record against Pakistan in world cup is perfect’. He had a meeting with the batsmen and fielders as our fielding unit was very strong. Paaji told us ‘let’s trouble them, they don’t perform when put

under pressure’. This showed his intensity,” said Raina during ‘Salaam Sachin’, an event organised by the India Today Group in honour of the iconic batsman. Raina said it was amazing to see the same kind of hunger in Tendulkar during the 2011 World Cup as he first showed way back in 1989 during his Test debut. “He was keen to win the world cup. When we were playing the final (against Sri Lanka), we did not get a good start and players started roaming around for tea and snacks. At that time, paaji told everyone to be seated and watch the match. That shows his involvement. When we won the world cup, and the way his family, fans and the whole of Mumbai rejoiced, it was a touchy moment for every player. Paaji became so emotional after winning it. It showed how much desperate he was to win the Cup,” Raina recalled. Another ardent admirer of Ten-

Suresh Raina and Javagal Srinath share a light moment. dulkar and his longtime teammate, pacer Javagal Srinath also paid rich tribute to the legendary batsman and

recounted many indelible moments. “One thing which I liked about Sachin, he was so tightfisted with

his compliments. He would never compliment you so easily. It’s quite tough to get a compliment from him. If at all you want to know what he has said about you, it could be from others,” said Srinath. “They would come to you and say ‘look Sachin was telling us you batted well or you bowled well’. That’s the compliment which you look up to.“That was a good part about his captaincy also. It really raised the level in many of us. Bottom line is you got to impress your captain, you got to get that confidence from your captain. He was tough in those matters. That’s something which I really admired,” Srinath added. He said Sachin was simply the best in all conditions and had a wonderful observation against all types of oppositions. “He was accurate with his observation 90 per cent of time. Let me a recall a match, I was batting at the other end. Bowlers had plans for Sachin and had some plans for me also.”

Brother Ajit says Sachin is a contented man today M

Boria Majumdar with Ajit Tendulkar.

UMBAI: India Today Conclave’s first session saw Sachin Tendulkar’s brother Ajit Tendulkar share some insightful details into Sachin’s life and career. The session saw Ajit reflect on life after 18th November when Sachin will quit the game. “One thing after 18th November Sachin won’t be wearing the India cap again. It will be a big change for him. He has been wearing that India cap for last 24 years. Whenever he stepped on the field, people expected him to score 100 always. Pressure is not going to be there further. He can eat as many dishes of butter chicken as he wants with no further media scrutiny.” Ajit said He further added that his entire

family will be watching the final Test match. “They are happy. Mother has never seen him play. This will be the first time. Also it will be a very emotional moment. Surprisingly for someone who moulded Sachin’s illustrious career and guided him in his formative years he has himself never seen Sachin play live. So what prompted him to take Sachin to coach Ramakant Achrekar? “Three thingsHe had a beautiful back lift. He had a lovely swing of hands. While playing with tennis ball he used to pick up length quickly.” Ajit also had his fears during Sachin’s growing up years. Especially his love for fast cars! “Never doubted his ability. A fast learner

but few things scared us. Like Dungarpur Sir called my father that he would often drive in the 5th gear. I would ask my mother to pray and my sister used to fast to create positive vibes.” One of the low points of Sachin’s career was when his father passed away during the 1999 World Cup. That was the time when his family willed him to continue playing the remainder of the tournament. Ajit concluded by saying that Sachin will leave the game a contented man. “From day one he was disciplined and talented we did not need to do anything special. It’s ending on a happy note and most of his dreams have come true, he has fulfilled the expectations.”

Sachin in Parliament because of Sonia Gandhi: Shukla

N

EW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi had recommended Sachin Tendulkar's name for nomination to Rajya Sabha, according to BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, who also hinted that the government may consider conferring the prestigious 'Bharat Ratna' on the iconic cricketer after his retirement. Tendulkar became India's first active sportsperson to become a member of Parliament in June 2012. Shukla said the names of veterans such as Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri were actually doing the rounds for nomination to the Upper House but Sonia Gandhi was keen to have Tendulkar in Parliament. "It was not my idea to have Sachin in Rajya Sabha. I was thinking that veterans such as Ravi Shastri or Sunil Gavaskar would be recommended but Mrs Sonia Gandhi asked me to talk to Sachin. I said, 'he's still playing' but she insisted that at least I discuss it with him. "Then I spoke to him when he was playing in Dhaka and he said, he will discuss it with his family. Then he called me back and said his family was not averse to this (idea), and how to go about it. So this is how he became Rajya Sabha member," Shukla said at an event 'Salam Sachin', organised by India Today Group in honour of the legendary batsman. A clamour has grown in favour of Tendukar getting the Bharat Ratna award, India's highest civilian honour. Shukla said the government can actually consider that since Tendulkar is hanging his boots. "This demand is there for last 2-3 years. But it cannot be done when someone is playing, there maybe some controversy. Now that he is retiring, we will try that he gets it. Hopefully, the committee (that decides) and the government will consider," Shukla said.

HENNAI: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand today gave his Norwegian challenger Magnus Carlsen a scare despite playing with black pieces even though the third game of the World Chess Championship clash ended in a longgrinding draw here. The third game today turned out to be a hard fought affair lasting 51 moves after a rather sedate start that had seen the first two games ending in draws without any real excitement. Midway into the third game today, Anand appeared to have seized the initiative with some ‘spot on’ manoeuvres, but world number one Carlsen saved the situation with his counter play. Later at the post-game conference, Carlsen conceded that he felt “scary” though he averted the danger. “I was worse, and then I probably made it more worse. I missed some simple things in the middle game, may be I had enough play and it was not a disaster but it was scary,” Carlsen said. After the third draw on the trot, the deadlock continues with none of the two rivals refusing to blink so far, but what happened at the Hyatt today was probably a clear indication that a rough battle is now shaping up. The scores stand at 1.5 points for both players and the five-time champion Anand will have the advantage of playing with white pieces in the fourth game tomorrow. Carlsen showed his intentions of a bloody battle when, contrary to the popular belief, repeated the Reti opening.

V Anand has Magnus Carlsen in a spot of bother.

“I was expecting that Carlsen would jump from one opening to another,” said Grandmaster R B Ramesh, who is a part of the live commentary team here. As is typical of the Reti opening, the changes to several set ups is possible. Carlsen went for a position akin to the English opening that was more of a Sicilian Dragon with colours reversed. The Middle game took a major turn when Carlsen deviated his attention to the King side by a queen sortie but Anand was alert enough. With some ‘spot on’ manoeuvres, the Indian ace then seized the initiative pushing the white queen to the edge of the board only to see Carlsen avert the danger with his counter play. As the game progressed, Carlsen got back in his groove and got his counter play in form of a thematic central break through. Thereafter, the Norwegian was pretty much at ease as the game quickly changed shape once again. Anand knew there was sufficient play for both sides when he allowed liquidation to a position that had Bishops of opposite colours. The Indian had a small weakness on the king side that could be easily covered.“Obviously for black what he is getting is the two Bishops, if I can role my queen side pawns down I would be better,” Anand noted in the post-game chat. Anand won a pawn in the small tactical battle that ensued but it was not enough. Carlsen was quick to launch some threats and the Indian decided to go for further liquidation by trading the last pair of rooks on the 37th move.
