In the best (or worst) traditions of a Hollywood action film, with the ‘barbarians’ through the gates and minutes to spare before their homes were ‘invaded’, there came the news that the Supreme Court had put on hold the demolition of 96 illegal flats in the five buildings at Worli till further notice.

Here the matter will stand till May 31, 2014, while another solution is sought, including alternative accommodation. While majority of the hospitals in Khopoli, his place of residence, denied help for the lack of availability of the required infrastructure and expertise to deal with such a complicated case, two hospitals in Mumbai, allegedly denied him assistance for reasons like operation theatre being under repairs and Mahadev’s inability to shell out a huge some of money. The hospitals in question are BMC-run KEM in Parel where Mahadev says the operation theatre was under repairs and the other hospital was Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani at Andheri where Lata was refused treatment as Mahadev said that he couldn’t arrange for Rs.14 lakh.

A lifestyle characterised by unhealthy nutrition, reduced physical activity and tobacco consumption has increased the risk factor of diabetes,” said Amol Naikawadi, Joint Managing Director, Indus Health Plus. Considering the health of most Mumbaikars is far from optimum, the level of awareness about diabetes across the country also seems to be abysmal. ager to gain mileage from the Supreme Court order staying the demolition of the Campa Cola Compound till May 2014, politicians cutting across all party lines have termed the stay order as a tool to save illegal slums and structures. Sidestepping the issue, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that he has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to find who was responsible for the illegal construction. He has said that with the SC granting a breather, there will be more time on hand to look into the issue. “There are several buildings in Mumbai that do not have Occupancy Certificates but people continue to stay there,” remarked Chavan. The first one to jump on the bandwagon was NCP’s working president Jitendra Awhad who re-
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan marked that the SC verdict would only serve as a support to save illegal slums. He added that the NCP would ask the government to issue an ordinance to protect all such illegal structures constructed prior to January 1, 1995. Awhad clarified that the party was not supporting il-
legal structures, but at the same time was not in favour of making the inhabitants homeless. Senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai lashed out at the Chief Minister regarding his failure to resolve the issue on time. He said that the government has not been sensitive enough to solve the problems of housing. Desai argued that the Campa Cola Compound residents had not committed any mistake and argued that politicians were right in showing sympathy towards the residents. Passing the buck on to the BMC administration, Desai demanded action against the BMC engineers who failed to take timely action in preventing the illegal construction. Leader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde too slammed the Chief Minister accusing him of using time-killing tactics and dragging his feet over the issue even as he was vested with powers to grant relief to the embattled residents.

he Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) demolished illegal floors of the 14-storeyed Palm Towers in Nerul yesterday as per the Bombay High Court’s order. Aziz Shaikh, DMC (anti- encroachment) said, “A notice period of two months was given by the High Court to the residents of this building and it was to end on December 10, but we were prepared to
demolish the illegal floors at any point of time. All the flats which got demolished were duplex”. NMMC’s ward officer Manohar Gangurde said, “FSI violation measures an area of 1,500 sq metres comprising half the area of the 12th floor and the entire 13th and 14th floors of the building. Palm Towers had bought the land from the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and got the building constructed by a developer”.
On March 9, the society management, which includes 100 flat owners, decided to demolish the shopping units on the ground floor, saying the shops were “illegal”. However, the affected shop owners produced the verdicts of the Supreme Court and the High Court to show that their units were legal, and that the FSI violation concerned the upper floors of the building. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

“When the victim stepped out of her house with her sisterin-law to go shopping, Gohil, who was in an auto rickshaw, abducted her and took off. Her sister-in-law immediately informed her family who then filed a complaint of kidnapping at the Vakola police station. We launched a manhunt for Gohil and sent our team to Surat, Ahmedabad, Junagadh and also Rajasthan, but Gohil man-

Top club, gymkhana members arrested for illegally selling tickets, passes By Neel Shah
M
umbai’s crime branch on Wednesday arrested three persons for illegally selling tickets and complimentary passes for the India-West Indies match and more significantly, Sachin Tendulkar’s last match. Interestingly, those arrested are not the usual touts, but are members of prominent clubs and gymkhanas of South Mumbai. According to the police, the arrested accused have been identified as Janak Gandhi of Garware club, Girish Premna
of Bombay Gymkhana and Ajay Jadhav of Islam Gymkhana. The accused used to get free tickets and passes from the respective clubs and gymkhanas where they are associated as members. Based on a tip-off, sleuths from the Property Cell of the crime branch arrested the accused redhanded while they were illegally selling the tickets. The accused used to sell complimentary passes, which they got free as members of the club, for as much as Rs.25,000. Further, they got the tickets for Rs.1,000 and were selling them for
Rs.8,000, said Nandkumar Gopale, incharge of Property Cell. Interrogation of one among the trio accused revealed that hitherto, the accused had sold nearly 40 complimentary passes for amounts between Rs.20,000 to Rs.25,000 each. This makes it apparent that more people, who are members of the clubs and gymkhanas, could be involved in the illegal selling of passes. Meanwhile, all the accused have been arrested under section 420 (cheating) of IPC. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Traffic police constables have caught 14 chain snatchers red-handed in the past 6 months and have nabbed 3 fake police officers.
After darkest night... point, with a couple of hundred policemen in the compound, there were some in uniform on top of the cars, trying to haul out people who had taken stubborn refuge under them! By noon it was crackers, sweets and fireworks, as all celebrated the lifting of months of severe tension as one lifeline after another gave out, bringing the demolition closer. Early on Wednesdya morning, after the standoff on Tuesday, police and civic teams were back to continue the initial phases that would lead to the destruction of homes. That is when the gates finally came down. Meanwhile, the residents are planning on finding a solution to the problem caused by the fact that anyway you look at it, their homes are illegal. One of these could be buying expensive FSI from an adjoining area. Local residents started shouting and
crying as civic officials marched into the compound to start cutting off water, electricity and gas pipelines, the first phase of on going demolition. Civic workers who could have barely started their work, surprised as Campa Cola started dancing and distributing sweets. But all that is in the future for a community of people to whom time is of the essence. Of the extra time they have been granted, they are taking a little to celebrate, try and forget the trauma they have gone through, and gird up for the trying times ahead. Resident Vidhya Hirawat said, “Tonight will be Diwali for us. We could not celebrate this year as the civic body had served us notice to vacate our homes. This order is like the message of an angel to save our homes from being demolished.” True or not, for now, this will have to do.

Only some respect While the Thackeray family will be at Shivaji Park to pray, meet dignitaries, other Sena leaders and cadres will organise their own programmes locally to observe Bal Thackeray’s first death anniversary By Prashant Hamine
T
he first death anniversary of late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on November 17, will surprisingly see no special programmes, rallies or speeches at Shivaji Park. At party office Shivalaya senior Sena leader Subhash Desai yesterday disclosed that the entire Thackeray family will arrive at the venue around 9 am to offer their respects and meet dignitaries and other people. The makeshift landscaped garden and Smriti Chauthara (makeshift memorial) will be thrown open to all between 7 am and 7 pm. Desai stated that BMC
mayor Sunil Prabhu had met Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr. Satyapal Singh and party leaders to chalk out security and other plans for the day. He added that no one will be put to any inconvenience and that all will be allowed to pay their respects at the memorial. Replying to queries over whether Narendra Modi, Raj Thackeray or Manohar Joshi will arrive at the venue, Desai clarified that the occasion was not one where one would send invites to all. Meanwhile, Desai himself has organised a four-day Thackeray Utsav at A.B. Goregaonkar High School in Gore-
gaon from November 14 which will be inaugurated by Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. The event will showcase the various facets of the life and times of the late Sena chief. Dr. Swapna Patker will be launching a website, “www.balasahebzindabad.co m” on November 16. The motive of the website is to help people just the way Balasaheb did, she informed. The residents of Shri Sadanand Sadan in downtown Dadar have decorated the outer wall of their building with a collection of photographs of late Bal Thackeray as a token of respect for the Sena chief.

Campa Cola must not be demolished I
T was a horrible scene: The eviction operation carried out by the BMC and the police was ruthless and merciless. The residents were being pushed about by the police as the BMC was getting set to demolish the illegal floors of the Campa Cola building. There were many women and children crying hopelessly as they appealed to the BMC men not to demolish their houses which they had bought with their hard-earned money. What wrong have we committed to deserve such harassment, they asked. And they also pleaded with the BMC men and the police that they have nowhere to go. The BMC men however carried on their work: they smashed the gate of the compound and ignored the heart-rending protests of the residents. The people of Mumbai and those in other parts of the country saw the cruel operations of the BMC and staff and evidently there was nothing but sympathy for the victims of the builder-government nexus. Among those who saw the horrible happenings were the Supreme Court judges. It did not take them much time to issue a new order: there should be no demolition till May 31. There was relief for the Campa Cola residents. The tears stopped flowing down their faces. There was a smile on the face of the residents, they hugged each other. There was celebration. The Supreme Court has noted that the builders who are actually guilty should be taken to task. It is a fact that the Campa Cola residents are totally innocent. They were actually cheated by the builder. And what is quite unfortunate is that the government apparently sided with the builders. It is being said that there was a nexus between the government and the builder. The BMC has to protect residents. Demolishing a building that is constructed illegally is not the right way of dealing with the issue. It is the builders who must be made to pay up. Demolishing a building causes huge hardship to innocent residents. The BMC must evolve a new plan to deal with the situation.

ROM the time twenty years ago that I first came to live in Mumbai, I have been amazed and horrified by the municipal incompetence with which housing problems are handled in a city with the most serious housing problems in the whole of India. I have spent much time trying to find out why none of the managers of this city by the sea realised ever that the construction of low-income, rental housing was a vital necessity and I have not heard a satisfactory answer. Some people say it was because political leaders wanted slum votes that they allowed them to spread across the city while others say that it is because the people who live in the vast, hideous shanties of Mumbai refuse to be rehoused that the slums exist. But, as someone who works with a community of street people who have lived near Marine Drive for more than forty years I can tell you that if low-income rental accommodation were available in Mumbai, nobody would choose to live on pavements or in slums. To rent a hovel in a slum costs more than Rs. 5000 a month in South Mumbai and to buy one involves a ‘pagri’ of more than Rs. 3 lakhs. So there really is no explanation – other than municipal incompetence – for why low-income accommodation was never built.

leaders and the buildings that house MLAs, judges and high officials. It cannot be otherwise, because building in Mumbai is restricted by all kinds of absurd regulations that should have been changed long ago. There is for a start the FSI (Floor Space Index) regulation that was violated by the builder of the Campa Cola building. It is an irrational rule because in a city as bereft of affordable housing as Mumbai, there should be no restrictions on how much covered area you can build. There is no FSI policy, for instance, in New York, but builders are obliged to ensure that they can provide water, electricity and other amenities when they construct a building. Why should Mumbai not do the same? Why have none of those who gov-

Illegalities are everywhere
Tavleen Singh
The irony is that Mumbai’s poorest citizens are in matters of housing better off than the middle classes. This is because they have no compunctions about living on pavements or qualms about slum accommodation that does not provide minimum municipal services like electricity and water. This is something that middle class people cannot do, so they have the choice of paying a small fortune every month to rent rooms that are often no bigger than a double bed or putting their savings together to buy a tiny home in one of the city’s more affordable buildings. This is what happened when the residents of the Campa Cola compound bought their flats thirty years ago. Municipal officials now claim that they would have known even then that there were illegalities in construction, so it is their fault that they went ahead and bought the flats. But the truth is that there are illegalities involved in the construction of most residential buildings in Mumbai and more importantly glaring illegalities for everyone to see in the houses of political
ern this city ever thought of making this vital change? The other equally illogical regulation is the CZR (Coastal Zone Restriction) that prevents buildings from being constructed too close to the sea. When this regulation was being made why did nobody notice that Mumbai is built on the sea and that while the CZR regulation might make sense in more rural places so that beaches are not encroached upon, it makes absolutely no sense in a city that is built mostly on land that has been recovered from the sea? When I asked a builder friend why nobody had removed these bizarre regulations he said, ‘Because officials benefit in very lucrative ways from keeping them in place.’ Is this what happened when the ill-fated building was coming up in the Campa Cola Compound? When the Municipal Commissioner, Sitaram Kunte, was asked why his officials should not be held responsible for allowing the extra flats to be built, this is
what he told the Mumbai Mirror. ‘Our officials have issued stop work notices time and again. We haven’t found any dereliction of duty on the part of any BMC staffer. The residents and the builders had been issued enough warnings.’ Can this be considered a good enough explanation? I leave it to you to decide. What is even harder to understand about Mumbai’s housing problems is why in a city with such grim shortages of land there should be so many expensive acres occupied by derelict government buildings. On Worli Seaface where land costs several hundred crore rupees an acre, a sprawling government dairy farm occupies a vast tract of prime acreage. And, on Marine Drive, where land is even more expensive, there is a state owned children’s home that could easily move to a less expensive part of the city. Whenever I have tried to ask officials in Mumbai why they have done so little to make better use of public land, the only explanation they have given is that things move slowly in government offices. So slowly that the pace alone leaves room for small fortunes to be made by corrupt officials who may not be able to monetise public land but know very well how to monetise regulations.
Mumbai needs a real mayor One of Mumbai’s biggest problems is that it is governed by the Maharashtra government instead of by a powerful elected mayor as other cities of this size are all over the world. The reason why Delhi, despite its problems, is one of the only Indian metropolises in which living standards have improved is because the Chief Minister of Delhi is in fact an elected mayor. No city needs a powerful mayor more than Mumbai and yet nobody has even begun to talk about this here. Meanwhile, my heart goes out to the people who are fighting to prevent their flats from being demolished in the Campa Cola Compound because they are being punished for illegalities that are no fault of theirs. Only in India is it possible for corrupt municipal officials to get away with their criminal deeds while the victims of their crimes get punished instead – victims whose only crime was to invest their hard earned money in that ultimate urban dream: a permanent home. What is happening in the Campa Cola compound is an urban horror story that must be ended. There should be no demolitions.
Use imagination to change Negative to Positive F
IRST thing in the morning, imagine yourself tremendously happy. Get out of bed in a very happy mood, radiant, bubbling, expectant, as if something perfect, of infinite value, is going to happen today. Get out of the bed in a very positive and hopeful mood, with the feeling that this day is not going to be an ordinary day, that something exceptional, extraordinary, is waiting for you; something is very close by. Try and remember it again and again for the whole day. Within seven days you will see that your whole pattern, your whole style, your whole vibration, has changed. When you go to sleep in the night, just imagine that you are falling into divine hands...as if existence is supporting you, that you are in its lap, falling asleep. Just visualize it and fall asleep. The one thing to carry is that you should go on imagining and let sleep come, so that the imagination enters into sleep; they are overlapping. Don’t imagine any negative thing, because if people who have an imaginative capacity imagine negative things, they start happening. If you think that you are going to get ill,
you will get ill. If you think that somebody is going to be rude to you, he will be. Your very imagination will create the situation. So if a negative idea comes, immediately change it to a positive thought. Say no to it. Drop it immediately; throw it away. Within a week you will start feeling that you are becoming very happy — for no reason at all. You may not be sleeping well in the night. Very few people are sleeping well,
MATTER & SPIRIT so when you have not slept well in the night you are a little tired during the day. If that is the case, then do something with your sleep. It should be made deeper. Time is not much of a question, you can sleep for eight hours, and if it is not deep you will feel hungry for sleep, starved, depth is the question. Every night before you go to sleep do a small technique, and that will help tremendously. Put the lights off, sit in your bed ready to sleep, but sit for fifteen minutes. Close your
eyes and then start any monotonous nonsense sound, for example: la, la, la — and wait for the mind to supply new sounds. The only thing to be remembered is those sounds or words should not be of any language that you know. When the unconscious speaks, the unconscious knows no language. It is a very, very old method. It comes from the Old Testament. It was called in those days glossolalia and a few churches in America still use it. They call it “talking in tongues”. And it is a wonderful method, one of the most deep and penetrating into the unconscious. You start by saying “la, la, la,” and then anything that comes you go on. Just for the first day you will feel it is a little difficult. Once it comes, you know the knack of it. Use the language that is coming to you. This will relax the conscious so deeply. Fifteen minutes — and you then just simply lie down and go to sleep. Your sleep will become deeper. Within weeks you will feel a depth in your sleep, and in the morning you will feel completely fresh. — Osho

Crooks escape while Campa Cola residents suffer WITH the way in which Mumbai’s Municipal Corporation is following Supreme Court orders and demolishing scores of flats in Mumbai’s Campa Cola residential complex, it is now confirmed to people at large that they are living in an infamous ‘Andher Nagri Chaupat Raj’. The way in which the cases of illegal buildings being built by criminal builders and supported by their accomplices in the Municipal Corporation have been judged by the Supreme Court is questionable. The hapless owners who have invested their life-savings have been punished and are now being unceremoniously dumped on the streets while the criminal nexus of the builders and bureaucrats has been exonerated. The Supreme Court must review its verdict and take a holistic view of the unholy alliance of criminals and their modus operandi, thus saving the victims and restoring them their right to properties they have paid for and are staying in for several years. NGOs should also organise a Mumbai Bandh in favour of the unfortunate families to protest against the ‘Andher Nagri’s Chaupat Raj’. — Ghulam Muhammed, Mumbai
Decongest stations
PACKED: The increasing number of commuters on narrow platforms at several railway stations, especially Dadar, can prove to be hazardous. THE Dadar Rly station W.R. and the Platforms 1 and 2 of the C.R. should be completely refurbished and modernised. The Dadar W.R. is becoming overcrowded and the width of the platform being very limited creates a risk of fatal accidents. There are people running amok unmindful of commuters’ movements especially the ones boarding trains with a wide gap between the platform and footboard. The lack of security and stringent punitive measures has been the source of encouragement for wrong elements that have become increasingly complacent. The market in the vicinity of Western Dadar is blessed with so much of variety and so dense with dirt that defies the concept of hygiene and could easily be the breeding ground for diseases. The Railway authorities should shed their obsessions and look out of the box, turn their own pages and learn, which will go a long way to benefit commuters particularly if they decongest Dadar, Bandra and Andheri stations on the WR and Kurla, Mulund, Thane and Dombivli on the CR during peak hours.
HELPLESS AND HOMELESS: Thanks to the nexus of criminal builders and bureaucrats, the residents of the illegal floors in the Campa Cola Compound are being made to vacate their homes for no fault of their own. ering men on whose collective shoulders the Mahatma had thoughtfully laid the mantle for building India. In spite of disparate viewpoints, Nehru and Patel saw to it that they remained colleagues in the same political organisation. Such was their respect for Mahatma Gandhi, that notwithstanding acute strains and divergence of personal perspectives as regards executive decisions, they took adequate care to prevent any permanent discord. Nehru was nominated by Gandhiji for his cosmopolitan outlook and phenomenal mass appeal. Sardar Patel, notwithstanding having his finger on the pulse of the country, did not enjoy popularity to that extent. But it is a tribute to Gandhiji’s wisdom that he realised that both would contribute to the unity, strength, and progress of the country. Today, the country’s vitiated political atmosphere has almost obscured the urgent lessons to be learnt and implemented from the glittering political examples of the past. One hopes that the NehruPatel harmony will be reflected by Indians and appreciated for the ability of different personalities to nurture a constructive symbiosis. — Ranajoy Sen, Kolkata
THE print media has given wide publicity to the reported clash between Nehru and Patel. As a staunch secularist Nehru was not expected to go to the aid of the Hindu subjects of an atrocious Muslim ruler like the Nizam. When the religious bigot ordered his troops to slaughter the Hindus, his own subjects, he received spontaneous help from the Razakar leader Kasim Rizvi, whom Gandhiji used to treat as his adopted son. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai When the rapacious Nizam army and the Razakars started the genocide of Hindus, the Sardar wanted to stop the mass killing by sending the Indian KULDIP Nayar’s article ‘Nehru V/S Army. But Nehru, in keeping with his Patel’ is a testimony to the depth of to- devoutly ‘secular’ ideals, had initially getherness and comradeship among resisted the Sardar’s pleas. Frivolous banter GOING by the choicest expletives and invectives hurled and traded between rival political parties, it is a matter of shame to witness the depths into which frivolity, childishness and political one upmanship
WITH no time left the residents of the illegal Campa Cola building have to vacate their flats as per the Supreme Court order which is final. Nobody can do anything in the matter as the SC is the supreme authority and its order has to be implemented by the authorities, failing which it will be considered a contempt of court and punishable under the law. The BMC’s demolition notice to residents which states that November 11 is the dead line is in the right direction as the authorities have to carry out the orders of the SC without any interference from politicians including the state chief minister who has to abide by the law. I strongly feel that in the current situation it is impossible for the residents to save their homes and will have to pay a heavy price unless a miracle takes place. The need of the hour is that the state government must help them find alternate accommodations and enable them to survive this disastrous situation. The authorities should also check on other illegal buildings which have to be demolished as per the court orders and must crack the whip on builders who cheat, loot and hold buyers to ransom for would sink. Instead of enumerating the steps taken by each party to attend to, accentuate and alleviate the social and economic welfare of the people, the parties are OF more concerned in trivial LETTER THE DAY name calling and bringing into play the election symbols of the concerned parties which is rather inane. THE fate of the Campa Cola flats will soon be known but there are several vested interests who want to ‘save’ the residents. However, their concern has nothing to do with sympathy but the idea is to create a precedent to save other similar scams the principle one being Adarsh. In fact, the question that should be asked is – if the illegal Campa Cola flats can be demolished, why can’t Adarsh? — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli
LOOKING at the fate that is set to befall the Campa Cola residents, a thought happened to cross my mind. Had these very people been unauthorised slum dwellers, I am sure that all politicians, irrespective of their party affiliations, would have promptly rushed to their rescue and seen to it that the demolition is stopped. However unfortunately, these residents happen to be honest tax payers and are therefore not eligible for protection from the political class. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali
polls, the cycle about riding the electoral wave or should we say taking the people for a ride and the ‘lotus’ about regaining its bloom. I hope the parties concern themselves with how to tackle inflation, rising prices, poverty and penury that has woefully afflicted us so savagely instead of concerning themselves with issues which are more germane and can be avoided like the plague. — Hemant Hemmady,Virar
Sachin: The Legend ‘I PLAYED on play grounds when it rained’ (ADC, Nov 12), reveals the humbleness of the Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar when he was being felicitated and having a complex named after him, something which has never been done before. A cricketer of his calibre certainly deserves such a grand felicitation. However the only thing which would probably prick him is that this establishment at Kandivli has not been legally built as it flouted some municipal norms and is part of a controversy. pg 18 We tell you why we we love the Gummy Bear chairs by Rolf Benz
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2013
From giving someone the finger to stealing a rickshaw, everyone has done something in public that they regret. The Woman’s World team puts together some of our readers’ most embarrassing stories and if you think you might have been at the receiving end‌ we’re sorry in advance!
W
omen in the city sure have been up to terrible things in public and you may have witnessed this first hand or been an innocent bystander caught in the midst of a lover’s spat. We kept it all anonymous (but of course!), so read through and see if you can find a story that sounds familiar‌
I publically humiliated my ex-boyfriend in the middle of a busy street. It was really bad and I still feel terrible about it. I wish we were on speaking terms just so I could apologise to him about it. We were kind of breaking up and having one of our usual fights. There were people all around us, looking on as they walked by. After hearing him repeat the same thing over and over again, I just turned around and ran away in the opposite direction while he was mid-sentence! It felt so freeing at the time but everyone stared at him and me. I feel really bad about it now.
There was an old lady. And then there was me, a 20-something young woman. But, there was only one rickshaw. I’m usually very caring and would always give an elderly person the rickshaw but I was desperate‌ so I stole it from her, even though she hailed it first. I quickly jumped into it before she could gather her walking cane to shuffle across the road. You
might think I’m really cruel but the reality is that I had to use the bathroom desperately. I could have asked her along, but I was so embarrassed that my body would betray me in the rickshaw. I feel terrible about it.
I was in the passenger seat going for a drive with my family. There was some road work going on and oncoming traffic was trying to maneuver its way into our lane, so we were well and truly stuck. After much lane hogging and haggling and squeezing, the cars from both directions started creeping forward, thanks to my brother directing the other drivers. Then, as one car drove past (a silver Mercedes if I remember correctly), I saw the woman driver lean forward and make a hand gesture to my brother. I had had it! I saw her lean, raise her hand and quick as a stink I raised both of my most verbose fingers‌ flipping her the double bird. Then, to my shame (part one), I see she is with her young daughter. And then to my shame (part two), my brother turns around and stares at me, my fingers still up like errant soldiers, and goes “Why are you doing that? She just gave me a thumbs up thanks!â€? goT The Wrong guy! I was at a pool with my sister and there was a man on the ledge above the pool, looking down at us and leering. He kept passing comments and hooting — it was terrible especially because it was a club, which was not somewhere I’d expect someone to behave like that. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I got really angry and decided that it was time to tell him off. So, I got out of the water and just like that and started yelling at him. He looked really confused, which made me angrier. I stood there abusing him for a really long time, till I realised my sister was panicking and constantly tapping me on the shoulder. She was trying to get my attention because for the past 10 minutes I had been shouting at the wrong man! It was so embarrassing! >> If you are going to yell, at least make sure it’s at the right person
Wine & dine One Sunday afternoon, I went for a brunch to a very high-end place with my friends and fiancé. I drank a little too much wine — around 10 (yes, 10!) glasses. We left and I suddenly had to throw up. I stopped the cab right near the great Jalsa and started throwing up. But, that was not the most embarrassing part. I had spaghetti coming out of my nose! And I was with my fiancé! Oh... it was terrible.
on The TaBle liTTle ms. KluTz I’m quite embarrassing in public, so there are several things that I wish I hadn’t done. The first thing that comes to my mind though (probably because it’s the most recent), is walking into a glass door. I know it’s not uncommon for people to miss a door and walk into it — but just once. I walked into it once, got really embarrassed and went to another part of the room — where I proceeded to walk into the glass door on the opposite side. And, this was during an interview for a job I wasn’t likely to get anyway. I was so embarrassed, but at least I didn’t have to go back.
Too much pda I was 17-year-old and had recently started dating a guy. We really were into each other and once on our way back from a friend’s place, we started making out on the last seat of the BEST bus. I don’t know how long the session lasted, because by the time we realised where we were, the bus was packed and there were these really creepy men staring at us. I didn’t care so much about it then. But, this memory makes me cringe now. It’s the worst thing I’ve done in a public place. And I’d totally judge others if I saw them do this.
When crush crashed I was in college, 19-year-old, with a massive crush on this guy who was oblivious to it (let’s name him Mr. Oblivious). One day, me and my friend, we were on our way home and passed this bus stop where my crush was waiting for a bus. When I was passing by, I looked in his direction and smiled. He smiled back. I had passed the bus stop, was some two feet away from it when my friend said, “You should have said ‘bye.’” I don’t know what got into me but I turned back, looked in his direction and screamed ‘Bye Mr. Oblivious!’ After realising what I had done, I wanted to dig a hole for myself then and never come out of it!
Taxi survey Think you’ve been bad at the back of a cab? You’re not alone! Hotels.com did a taxi survey recently wherein 31% of Indians have kissed in the cab and 9% globally think that kissing is their most popular back seat activity! The survey also came up with a list of items people have left in the cab — from a prosthetic leg, dentures, to even ex-boyfriends. Here are other amusing results:
The survey found that people tend to text or email whilst in cab (19%), while sleeping was the second most popular activity (15%), followed by eating (10%) and kissing (9%). l Brits are the most amorous in the back of a cab with 14% admitting to displaying passionate behaviour. l Globally, the most important feature in a taxi is WiFi (14%). l For 48.5% of Indian respondents, however, newspaper and music in the cab still tops the list. l
I think that the worst thing I’ve done in public has to be getting really drunk, standing on a table at the restaurant and dancing all night. It would have been fine in a club, but this was more of a resto-
bar and there weren’t any other people dancing! I was lucky that they didn’t throw me out — but maybe if they had, I wouldn’t have continued being so embarrassing all night.
WhaT are you eaTing? I was in Canada for a holiday and this happened at a restaurant. We were eating our meal and the table which was next to us was occupied by another couple. There was something that they had ordered which was looking and smelling divine! I couldn’t help it and asked them what they were eating. They got pretty startled and after a pause of some 10 seconds, they told me that it was the chef’s special. The man on that table then asked me if I want to taste it as well. I’m sure it was a joke, but I accepted his offer and tasted it!
FarTing & me?! I was standing at the check-out in one of those gourmet shops. The queue was rather long and I was regretting all the humus I had eaten for lunch. The guy in front of me was a real looker and I was quite enjoying the queue in spite of it. Suddenly, I farted. The good looker in front swung around and looked behind... his face a weird mask of mirth and horror. Shocked at myself and embarrassed beyond belief, I did the only thing I could... I swung round too, looked at the portly man behind me and turned back around and looked at my looker, raised my eyebrows and we shared a smile; both of us rolling our eyes at the old guy.
Wedgie Woes I was at a church wearing this dress. Mass was on and in the middle of it I took out a wedgie. I’m still so embarrassed about it, but it was so very uncomfortable, that I just had to do it! My entire concentration was on that prickly positioning of my underwear and I just couldn’t ignore it anymore, so I did it. I didn’t have the pluck to look around and check if anyone saw me doing that, because frankly, if I would have caught anyone’s eye, I think I would have never visited that church again!
Being The pee police I simply cannot see people urinating on the roads. Initially, I used to shout at them to embarrass them while I was in my car or an auto or on a bike. But, there was this one time when I went up to this fellow who was peeing against a wall, tapped on his shoulder and said ‘Bhaisahab, yeh gandi baat hai (Brother, this is a dirty act).’ When I did that, it was late in the night, I was with a couple of friends and I was drunk. At that moment there was no embarrassment (the fellow while being in the act said ‘Sorry madam’), but the next day when I woke up and my friends narrated it for me, I was mortified!

This is India, so people are not going to ignore you but instead stand and ogle at you, turn back and look several times and pass lewd comments. With couples being increasingly wary of having children, Priyanka Singh speaks to author Ridhi Doongursee about her book Parenting Mantras: 7 Steps To Worrying Less & Loving More and everything that falls under the parenting umbrella
R
oughly a decade ago, discussions about marriage and getting married used to involve statements that started with ‘When I get married...’ But, that statement has now been replaced by ‘If I get married...’ Apart from this uncertainty about getting hitched, there are several urban couples who are adopting the DINK (Double Income No Kids) route as children seem like a liability to them. Our pondering on this issue, and several others related to the future generation, led us to Ridhi Doongursee, who recently released her book, Parenting Mantras: 7 Steps To Worrying Less & Loving More. Ridhi has seen both sides. She has been in the sphere of fierce independence and is now a mother. Following a stint in banking, she decided to follow her entrepreneurial dream. She spent over five years studying the concept of parenting independently and researching it thoroughly. Through the course of her research and her life lessons as a mother, Ridhi discovered certain mantras that can truly help parents make the most of the time with their children. We speak to her about why the current generation is wary of having children, about her book and the dilemmas that new-age parents face. What do you have to say to the couples who opt to go the DINK (Double Income No Kids) way? One of the reasons I decided to write this book is because a lot of young couples who work are afraid to have children as they believe they will lose their independence or that it’s too big a responsibility. Young couples who come from big, loving families also feel like they cannot imagine themselves taking care of a child. We want our independence, the ability to travel and enjoy what we earn. Through my book I hope to address these fears and make couples feel more comfortable and less afraid of the responsibility of becoming parents. Being a parent is the most natural progression in life and it is fun and rewarding. Our bodies are made to have babies. It really is not as difficult as it seems. I used to love my job, the parties, travel — all of it. I loved adventure and did everything teenagers and those in their 20s want to do. I had a career I loved, travelled the world, did sky diving, bungee jumping, was into cars and speed. But, truly and honestly, it all pales in comparison to the excitement I feel when I see my son enjoy his meal, learn a new skill or go onstage for a three-second performance. I had a grin plastered on my face when I jumped off a plane and I had that same grin when my son took off his float in the pool. I could never have thought of or understood this, but it really is true.
Was there any other reason you decided to write this book? Basically, my son was the most unexpectedly fun and rewarding gift of my life. He is my own personal fan club, hug machine, kiss machine and he is the most caring darling. I learnt a lot during my journey of parenting and while there are numerous books with information, I could not find one which focused on happiness and resolving the small issues we face in the first few years of having a baby. So, I put together the seven
What is your view about letting a caretaker take care of a baby while mothers continue their careers and jobs? World over and for many generations, caretakers have taken care of children. Earlier in joint families, there would be multiple people to help. Now, as families are smaller and as everyone’s lives are busier, it’s difficult for grandparents to commit full time to taking care of grandchildren, if both parents are working. So, it’s inevitable that we have to hire caretakers to take care of our children. It’s not easy to find someone who you can trust and it’s an uphill task, especially in India, as the reliability of staff is low. There are ways around this and we all learn the ropes eventually. Is this okay for the child? I think if we as parents can give our children even a few minutes of quality time every day and ensure they are well taken care of in our absence, there should be no problem. That is my personal opinion and many people I know wish their parents had gone back to their jobs when they were younger, so they would not feel as lonely when their children were old enough to take care of themselves and busy with their own lives. The key is spending quality time with your child, so that they feel loved and secure.
who is Ridhi doonguRsee? Ridhi Doongursee graduated from the University of Warwick, UK and following a stint in banking, she decided to follow her entrepreneurial dream. She studied about parenting and then became a parent herself. Being a voracious reader who believes in constantly unlearning and re-learning, she wanted to write a book on these discoveries — on how to love every minute of being a parent, how to be happy yourself and how to raise happy children. Her book deals primarily with struggles that parents face in the initial years of parenting and her personal, interesting anecdotes on them.
Why do you think more and more couples are wary of having kids today? In a nutshell, there are primarily four factors: fear of too much responsibility, fear of not being able to be a good parent, fear of losing their independence, a lower quality of life or less time to have fun and lastly, the fear that despite two incomes, finances would be tighter as one of the parents would have to stop work or take a sabbatical.
steps that worked wonders for me and helped address a lot of common issues parents face. In my book, I have tried to outline the process, which can resolve the little hiccups of being new parents. I hope this book helps couples have a positive parenting experience. Do you think that raising the previous generation for parents was much easier than raising the present generation? I believe the earlier generation had limited exposure. As children, we asked less questions, were more obedient, calmer and less rebellious, but each generation has its own challenges. So, if this generation of parents try to balance the dilemma of children being addicted to gadgets or questioning us on things our generation would never ask our parents, maybe 30 years ago, our parents faced the challenge of having to keep guiding us; the dilemma of bringing us up in a way where they believed we would have good careers and then us
blaming them for not letting us pursue what we desired. Of course, eventually we all realise that in many ways our parents were right. And in some, maybe not... but that’s the joy of it. You do your best and leave the rest and that is honestly quite good enough! Let’s see the other side now. How do you think raising a child in the present generation is easier than the past one? I think that while in our generation academics was important, we had a lot less pressure than the children of today. Now parents want their children to have exposure to a lot of things apart from just school work, while excelling in as much as possible. So, they also have a lot of extracurricular activities and sometimes this can get harshly competitive. However, saying that, I believe parents can determine to what extent their child is part of this competitive culture and the amount of pressure a child experiences. So, it is, to a large degree, a choice the parent can make.

« TOP 5: STEPS TO RESIZE SHRUNKEN CLOTHES Shrunken clothes can be heartbreaking, but Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you out by showing you how you can actually resize them
you’ll need
Lukewarm water, a cap full of baby shampoo or conditioner and two large towels.
Step #1
Fill a large tub with lukewarm water and add the baby shampoo or conditioner. Let your shrunken clothing soak in the mixture for a few minutes. Gently move it around with your fingers to help relax the fibres.
Step #2
Step #4
After around 5-10 minutes of letting the clothes stay in the water, remove and squeeze any excess water out. Don’t rinse the shampoo out though.
Take off the second towel and let your clothing air dry. While it dries, start gently stretching it from all corners till it looks like its original size again.
Step #3
Step #5
Lay the clothing out on a large towel and roll it up tightly to absorb the excess moisture. Then, stretch it out and lay the second towel over it.
Once you get it to your preferred size, let it air dry completely, with a little help from a fan if you like, and you’ve got your clothes back!

UMBAI: The entire focus of the match is on India's biggest sporting icon, Sachin Tendulkar who will make his final bow when he steps on to his home turf at the Wankhede Stadium for his 200th and final Test, on what will be a massive, momentous occasion tinged with a more than a touch of sadness, as the ‘Great One’ bids adieu to the game he has loved. Yeah, he has presented us with a string of enduring memories in what has been 24-karat memories in a 24-year career, but here’s ar-
first Test heroics with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha all providing complementary support. Of the Windies bowlers, off-spinner Shane Shillingford had his moments in the first Test and would like to repeat the performance in the final Test too. dently hoping for a superb final flourish. It’s rare nay unlikely that one individual grabs the spotlight totally in what is essentially a team game, but then Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has carried the weight of a nation’s expectations on his shoulders for so long. ‘Mr. Cricket’ to the core, this phenomenon has been held in awe and admiration all over the cricketing world, which he has strode over like a colossus for well-nigh over a couple of decades. The adulation of his fans has to be seen to be believed from Mumbai to West Indies, even in England and Australia, so much so that he has significantly carved a place in the hearts of all his fans. And the vacuum that he would leave would be unable to fill. True there are young guns like Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan who already have made a mark in the Indian squad but India will never ever get the likes of a SRT ever in the future. True the country will never ever witness a farewell that is being endowed on its favourite cricketing hero, and the entire country will be hoping that Tendulkar’s willow somehow produces a splendid flow of runs in his final encounter. Coming back to the cricket, Indian will not want to tinker with their winning line-up of the first Test which saw both Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami come up with awesome debuts. The strong batting line-up also features Cheteswhar Pujara who will be itching to get back into the runs along with Kohli and skipper Dhoni, an of course the obdurate Tendulkar who will be aiming to sign off with a huge flourish. In the bowling department, Shami will be aiming to repeat his

All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream everyday for the last 24 years. It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because its all I have done since I was 11 years old. It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test match on home soil, as I call it a day.” — SACHIN TENDULKAR ON ANNOUNCING HIS RETIREMENT Test. UMBAI: Right in tune with the wish list of a billion fans, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he just wanted Sachin Tendulkar to ‘enjoy’ his last Test match irrespective of the expectations the teeming Indian people have from the man. Tendulkar who is set to take his last strides on a cricketing field today said the Indian entourage is looking forward to his 200th Test match but are keenly focussing on the match to prevent any form diversions. “I would like to see him enjoy because you can’t really guarantee performance. Off course you can say [I want him to score] a hundred, double hundred, triple hundred, four hundred, five hundred whatever... but at the end of the day what is most important that this is his last Test match that he will play and he should enjoy to the fullest. And hopefully he gets us a few wickets that will bring the fun because you get a bit of turn and bounce on the Mumbai wickets,” said Mahendra Singh Dhoni during the prematch press conference. The Indian skipper said he never thought he would be in a side that had Tendulkar in it and said he was fortunate to play with the man for 10 long years. “I never ever thought that I would get to play with him. At the end if I have played with him for 10 years, then I am fortunate. He has guided the youngsters very well and shown them how to lead a life when you become successful or when you are under pressure on how to prepare. It has been fantastic and the journey has been really good ... we have learnt a lot from him.” Speaking on his most emotional moment which he and Sachin was a part off, Dhoni said it had to be the win during the finals at the Wankhede Stadium, where everyone in the dressing room got emotional

We have quite a few high profile series wins in and outside India but in that particular game most of the players couldn’t control their emotions and everyone was crying. That was one of the most emotional moments, not only for me but also for our teammates who were part of the side,” said the 32-year-old Indian skipper. Dhoni said it was Tendulkar’s adaptability quotient that marks him as the greatest cricketer of all time. “As far as Sachin is concerned, he is the greatest because when it comes to Indian cricket you are under the

microscope throughout [your career]. He has seen the format change, right from when he started playing in 1989. From there on Test cricket has changed significantly, there have been plenty of changes in ODI cricket and the introduction of the T20 format. Overall it had the impact on each and everything.” Dhoni added that what has made Tendulkar highly successful was the way how he handled success and has set an example for the rest of the squad to follow. “It is not just the cricketing aspect, what is difficult to handle in India is to know how to handle the success and the expectation level of the people. We are expected to win each and every game which is not possible, so there are some of the greats but they didn’t have to deal with the expectation level and when you are doing well that itself puts a bit of pressure on you. Imagine when you are going through a lean patch, the expectation level only goes up and it never comes down, so he had to handle all these things. I have seen some of the foreign cricketers, they handle the cricketing pressure quite well but when it comes to handling the pressures which are not directly related to cricket, they buckle down. That way he has been fantastic since 1989 when he became a big star and now a quarter of a century later, he has played for India and he has always been a star.” NO REPLACEMENT FOR SACHIN Even without Tendulkar formally walking out of the green turf, questions have arisen to who will fill in the shoes of the ‘wonder boy’. However, Dhoni was quick to dismiss the huge hole the player will leave and who will bat at his coveted position at number four.

UMBAI: Bracing to spoil the Indian party, West Indian skipper Darren Sammy indicated that his team has prepared a fitting farewell and that they were all set to spoil the huge gala occasion the Indian cricket authorities have been planning for weeks. “It is always tough to play India in India. It is a tough battle. These things are a challenge. We have to show that we could rise to the occasion. And come there and give Sachin a good send-off, said West Indies skipper Darren Sammy. Sammy said that all the bowlers are quite motivated to get their names in the books of records to be the person to dismiss Tendulkar. The skipper said that Tino Best in particular, despite bowling long spells, would be encouraged to get a crack at the batsman. “From the moment we heard it is going to be his last Test in Mumbai, all the bowlers were quite

Darren Sammy has been the talking point during the firstTest as he has not been able to justify his inclusion as a pure batsman or bowler. Sammy who took over the mantle of the Windies side during its slump said that the pressure would bring the best out of him and he had to face such criticism from his first day of his career. “It is probably the way the big man above works. I need to be under pressure to bring out the best in me. I have been through that situation since the first day I started my career. To be honest right now I am not even worried about it. There is nothing more somebody who could say or criticise me about that. I criticise myself as well. I am not worried about the criticism. At the end of the day I am here to do a job to the best of my ability. Once the selectors or someone feels it is time to move on then so be it. We have moved on from Sammy in one-day cricket as captain, I will still enjoy my game. That is the least of my worries right now, the 29year-old skipper said.

SACHIN WON’T BE MISSED AS NEW GENERATION HAS ARRIVED: MIANDAD
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2013
K
ARACHI: Pakistan's former Test captain Javed Miandad feels veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar will fade from public memory once he retires after the second Test against West Indies as he is leaving the stage at a time when the Indian cricket team has found some exciting talent to fill the void. "The nature of the cricket fans in this region is such that if a player tries to prolong his international career they tend to forget him soon after he retires," Miandad said. Tendulkar has announced he will retire after the second Test which begins tomorrow. Miandad said he himself had made the mistake of trying to prolong his career and it didn't end well for him. "I must admit, unlike others, I feel that Tendulkar should have retired earlier...And he is now going at a time when India has found some very talented batsmen who are now the reigning heroes and idols of the people," Miandad said. Miandad said Tendulkar was deservedly getting a lot of adulation and tributes in the run up to his final match. "It is good to see this because Tendulkar deserves all this respect and tributes he has contributed a lot to Indian cricket over the years and his place among the master batsmen of the modern era is guaranteed," Miandad added. "I would recommend him as a role model for all young cricketers in all the cricket playing nations." The former Pakistani batting supremo saw Tendulkar make his Test debut in Karachi in 1989 and

There is no use talking about his greatness as a player but I think in the subcontinent, players like us must
know when it is the right time to go," Miandad said. Miandad said that in the subcontinent the adulation top players got made it difficult for them to decide when was the right time for them to
retire and this had happened with many greats in the past. "India is lucky they have unearthed a new generation of top batsmen and this is why I don't think Tendulkar will be missed that much," he said.
MUMBAI: It was business as usual for Sachin Tendulkar on what is supposed to be his last official training day in India gear before he embarks on the final leg of his journey in international cricket. At exactly 9.55 am, when he walked down the staircase of the dressing room into the field, it looked like one of those innumerable India matches where he would go through the routines. The long time ground-staff of Wankhede, some of whom saw a 15-year-old Tendulkar make his Ranji debut at this very ground 25 years back, came up to him. A short but warm felicitation followed as the ground staff presented him with a bouquet. The gentleman that Tendulkar is, he called all of them to have a group photograp. A snap they would all treasure for the rest of their lives. Around 10:45, in walked BCCI President N Srinivasan with his trusted lieutenants Sanjay Patel and Kashi Viswanathan. Srinivasan gave Tendulkar a warm hug.

unil Gavaskar said the trio of Don Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers and Sachin Tendulkar are to cricket what Michael Jordan is to basketball, Mohammad Ali to boxing and Pele to football. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said Sachin Tendulkar would have been successful in any era because of his sound technique and temperament and cited Sir Don Bradman's words to support his claim. "As Sir Don Bradman said a great in one era would have been a great in any era. If you look at the technique that he has got, if you look at the temperament that he has, I think he would have been successful in any era," Gavaskar said. Gavaskar, however, refused to compare Bradman with Tendulkar. "You cannot compare two players of different eras. At best you can compare players of the same team. I don't think it is correct to compare players of two eras. It's good for an after dinner debate."
Gavaskar said the trio of Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers and Tendulkar are to cricket what Michael Jordan is to basketball, Mohammad Ali to boxing and Pele to football. "There were few men who have embellished sports and made that sport beyond the sport itself. And I think in that context you would relate football with Pele, basketball with Michael Jordan, boxing with Mohammad Ali and in cricket I would imagine there would be three. One would be Sir Don Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers and Sachin Tendulkar. They absolutely took the game to a different level," said Gavaskar. Gavaskar said he realised Tendulkar's potential when he watched his maiden first-class game. "First time I watched him in a match was his debut first-class game against Rest of India and the following Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium. He certainly showed the potential to make life miserable for the bowlers of the world," he said.

STATESMAN TENDULKAR’S DRESSING ROOM INFLUENCE REVEALED

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2013
N
EW DELHI: Besides his enormous contribution with the bat, Sachin Tendulkar's wise counsel has defused some ugly situations in the Indian cricket team's dressing room. The Indian cricket team had risen in revolt against their then coach and former New Zealand captain John Wright during India's tour of England in 2002, it has been revealed by the manager of the team Rajeev Shukla, currently a union minister. Tendulkar helped end an ugly situation in the dressing room after Wright had slapped Virender Sehwag for the manner in which he had got out during the ODI match at the Oval. Shukla, who is also a BCCI Vice-President, revealed that it was Tendulkar who saved Wright from embarrassment as the then captain Sourav Ganguly wanted the New Zealander to apologise to Sehwag for slapping him. "I saw Sehwag in a bad mood. When I asked him he said that John had slapped him. It became an issue and Ganguly insisted that they will not leave (dressing room) unless Wright apologises to Sehwag. Then I found Wright and asked him if he did it. John said that he wanted Sehwag to score a century but 'Sehwag repeated his mistake of lifting the ball and got out, so I was angry. And he is like a disciple to me so I just pushed him out of anger'," Shukla recalled. As the tension built up in the dressing room, Tendulkar requested Shukla to ensure that Wright's dignity as coach is kept intact. "Sachin came to me and said that 'you must ensure that John does not apologise, otherwise the coach will lose
Sachin Tendulkar and Mumbai Indians coach John Wright. his respect'. I got back to Sehwag and explained that it was just like a father chides his son, John did it. He understood and let it go," Shukla said. Shukla also revealed how the retiring legend saved the Indian cricket team from embarrassment
with his mature and sane advise during the 2002 tour of England. Shukla said had it not been for Tendulkar, most of the players would have taken off their shirts and waved after the magnificent victory in the Natwest Trophy against England.
"Sourav wanted that all the players do it. Maybe he wanted to pay back Andrew Flintoff in the same coin. But Sachin came and whispered in my ears that 'this should not be done. It's a gentleman's game and if Sourav wants to do it let him do'," Shukla said.

UMBAI: Call it the corporatization of Indian cricket or the change of guard in Team India, the MCA today was certainly left a trifle embarrassed as its plans to pay tribute to Sachin Tendulkar at his home ground went a little awry with Virat Kohli's advertisement billboards completely overshadowing the batting icon's action pictures. Mumbai Cricket Association had planned to have 51 different pictures of Tendulkar with his Test centuries and names of oppositions inscribed on rectangular billboards, which were supposed to be put on the perimeter of the Wankhede Stadium roof. While Tendulkar billboards have somehow been squeezed in that rooftop perimeter, it was rising star Workers erecting the banners of Sachin Tendulkar depecting his 51 Test centuries over Kohli's face that screamed for at- his career spanning 24 years. tention as it dominated the bulk of the space, which was bought by an tainly not visible to the naked eye as contrast, the picture resolution of FMCG company. they have been enlarged from Kohli's ad-pic specially designed for Tendulkar's photographs are cer- newspaper and magazine snaps. When asked, an MCA official said that the in-stadia rights were given to a company and the state association didn't have a clue as to what deal the company has struck with the FMCG company whose product is endorsed by Kohli. "Yes, the pictures of Tendulkar are small compared to the other billboard (Kohli). But when we gave the contract, we didn't have an idea as to what photographs will be put up alongside Tendulkar's billboards," an MCA official told PTI. During Tendulkar's 199th Test match at Kolkata, hosts Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) made a few goof ups that included spelling Sachin's name as 'Sachine' and referring to his wife Anjali as 'Mr' Anjali Tendulkar. Call it irony but as India's greatest cricketer gets ready to bid adieu to the game, the corporate world seems to be gearing up to embrace the country's next great batting hope.

By Ignatius Albuquerque
H
is batting has one and all, gushing in collective delight but when Tendulkar turns his arm over, to bowl what is a special mix of deliveries, rival batsmen are often caught guessing and more significantly caught out. Who can forget the last over in the semifinal against South Africa in the 1993 Hero Cup. Defending a mere 195, the Indian bowlers did well and the South Africans needed six off the last over. Skipper Azharuddin took a calculated gamble, and tossed the ball to the young Sachin who till then had not sent down a single over. But the ice-cool Sachin bowled a tremendous final over which took India to a dramatic win. On other occasions too, Sachin has come up trumps with his bowling performances, possessing the knack of breaking crucial partnerships with his well-disguised deliveries and subtle variations. Even in the first Test at Kolkata, Sachin came up with a special delivery to trap Shane Shillingford lbw to provide a vital breakthrough.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT 1. Prior to his debut for India, Sachin had a stint as a ball boy for a World Cup match in 1987. In the match which saw India play Zimbabwe at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on October 17, 1987, Sachin along with his buddy Vinod Kambli was a ballboy. One ballboy who really made it big! 2. When starting out, Sachin originally wanted to be a bowler but sage advice from former Australia bowler Dennis Lillee prevented him from becoming a bowler at the MRF Pace Foundation. No doubt, he troubled and tormented batsmen when he turned his arm over, but this youngster went on to become one of the premier batsmen of the world.
3. Sachin was a rather reserved teenager, but a prankster to the core who simply loved playing tricks on his teammates. During a U-15 tour, Sachin played a prank on teammate Atul Ranade by applying a paste all over his face when the latter was sleeping. When Ranade woke up, he jumped into a bucket full of water. 4. Sachin is a law-abiding citizen. Nothing could prove this more than this incident. He was awarded a champagne as a Man of the Match prize for his maiden ODI ton but the Little Master refused to drink as he was below 18, the permissible age for drinking. In fact, Sachin saved that bottle only to open it up on his daughter's first birthday. 5. Sachin considers his 13 coins, which he received as souvenirs from coach Ramakant Achrekar after bowlers failed to dismiss him in nets, as his most prized possession. He still has them and that discipline is what made him the cricketer he is.
6. Sachin is ambidextrous by birth. He bats and bowls right-handed but writes left-handed.
7. During the World Cup 2011 knockout matches, fans were heard saying they don’t want a century from the Little Master. There’s a point in that as all centuries made by Sachin against Test playing countries in World Cup has never yielded a win for India. The best result has been a tie against England in 2011 World Cup. 8. This is an interesting piece of information that goes on to prove Sachin's longevity to the sports. His last Ranji partner Dhawal Kulkarni was born on the day Sachin made his Test debut.
9. Sachin's Ferrari, which was given to him as a gift and which he later sold it, had the number plate MH01 AD 9999. Little Master considered this number lucky for him. He retained the number after selling the car and uses it on another car he drives.
10. Other than cricket and cars, Sachin works towards the welfare of underprivileged children. Tendulkar sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO associated with his mother-in-law, Annabel Mehta.

ANAND SALVAGES LOST POSITION TO SETTLE FOR FOURTH DRAW MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2013

I was lucky twice, I came out of a lost position: Anand
C
HENNAI: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand survived by the skin of his teeth, steering the fourth game of the World Chess Championship to a gruelling draw against Magnus Carlsen of Norway. With eight games still to come in the 12-game affair, the scores are tied at 2-2 and the battle is really heating up if the last two games are any indication. Anand was pushed to the wall for the first time in the match and this happened soon after he was seen pressing for a win in the third game that ended in a draw yesterday. It showed that Carlsen has got steely nerves. The Norwegian also changed his opening with black and it turned out to be a good ploy after his Caro Kann in the first black game. The Berlin defense became famous after Vladimir Kramnik used it successfully to beat Russian compatriot Garry Kasparov in the Braingames World Championship match in 2000 at London and since then it has found a stronghold in the elite chess circles. Anand himself has played the opening with black successfully and he definitely had an idea up his

However, Carlsen was the first to spring a surprise as early as on move 10 when he moved his Bishop. While it was not a new move, it was indeed a surprise as it had been played just four times prior to this and three out of those four games were played by Jon Lud-

vig Hammer, trusted friend and second of Carlsen. More recently, Navara David of Czech Republic also played it successfully to get a draw with Lenier Perez Dominguez of Cuba. Anand did not get much out of the opening and, while looking for complications, sacrificed a pawn on the queen side, that to the bare eye looked like a poisoned pawn. Known to never avoid complications, Carlsen took the bait and it was backed by some brilliant intuition as the later part of the game revealed. While Anand got some compensation, Carlsen opened up the king side for his rook's invasion and it looked like his extra pawn would count. Making things worse was the clock as Anand also ran a little short of time in the final phase of the first time control. The mutual mistakes however continued. Carlsen sensed a win somewhere
as he started to play fast and Anand pounced on an offered chance to sacrifice another pawn that gave some play. The Norwegian gobbled the second offering too but could not digest it so well as he returned favour almost immediately by making the decisive error. It was the 37th move. Anand paused for some time, then his body language showed huge positives as he sprang to a straight pose and this was enough giveaway that the defending champion was back in the game. The errors did not end according to the chess engines but the position was back to normalcy. There was still a lot of work to be done, but from staring at a defeat, this was much easier, especially, as Anand is known as one of the best defenders ever. The game progressed to a rooks and pawns endgames, Carlsen still had an extra pawn but it was not-so-relevant.
CHENNAI: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand conceded that he came out of a lost position in the fourth game of the World Chess Championship match against Magnus Carlsen of Norway, which ended in a gruelling draw here. "Something went wrong in the opening. I made one illogical move after the next and then I missed something with this knight move. And then I was just basically lost," Anand said at the post-game press conference. "I am sure he had many wins in what he played. Towards the endgame it was a little bit scary in this four rooks endgame but finally when I gave a check on a8 and then moved my rook, I was safe," Anand said. "I was lucky twice. Just before the time control I could give a check and made my next move and reached the time control. It happened twice." Asked whether he missed losing the pawn, Anand said: "I didn't really miss it. If I didn't play Ne2 what do I do. I was just being consistent." Carlsen was pretty happy with the way things went for him today."I was doing pretty good, and then when I won the pawn I was very optimistic. He kept on finding resources and I was missing some little things. He really fought very well. It's bit of a pity to have spoiled such a good position but it was a very good fight," he said.
Question 3 At which ground did Tendulkar, after getting out on 88, miss out on becoming the youngest centurion in the history of Test cricket? Wellington Napier Auckland Christchurch Question 4 And who was the bowler who dismissed him in that innings? Danny Morrison Richard Hadlee Martin Snedden Ken Rutherford
Question 5 On November 25, 1991, Tendulkar was involved in a first-of-its-kind incident on the field. What was it? He was given out by the third umpire, a first in international cricket He was the third wicket in an all-LBW hat-trick, a first in ODI cricket He became the first Indian batsman to be out hit wicket in ODIs He was accused of ball tampering, the first for an Indian
