ardly has some time passed since resident doctors across the State rejoiced the fact that the implementation of the Doctors' Protection Act will deter people from assaulting doctors, Dr. Gaurav Haldankar, a resident doctor from the surgery department at BMC run Rajawadi hospital, Ghatkopar was assaulted during the wee hours of January 14 by a man named Asif Sheikh who had come to the hospital seeking medical assistance.

The incident led to an outrage among the doctors at the hospital and they stopped working declaring a strike till the security of doctors was taken care of. The injury caused due to the assault, said fellow doctors at Rajawadi hospital, could have proved fatal had it been slightly deeper.

What happened: Speaking about the incident, Dr. Khizer Doctor, surgical registrar, Rajawadi hospital said, “At around 12:30 am on January 14, Sheikh came to Rajawadi with a small cut on his finger that was bleeding. At that time, Dr. Haldankar was busy stabilising a patient who had just been brought in and was serious as he had a stomach perforation. So I gave Sheikh the primary treatment for his wound which was not serious and then asked him to keep the wound pressed and wait for some time as we had other important cases to attend. Yesterday, the results for Common Admissions Test 2013 (CAT) were declared with an overall passing percentage of 99.96 per cent in Section 1 and 99.9 in Section 2.

This year 1.94 lakh students appeared at 76 test centers across 40 cities from October 16 to November 11,2013. Among the toppers, eight candidates scored 100 percentile.

Mumbai's Abhiraam Iyer, 23, who is currently pursuing his studies from IIT Chennai, scored 353/400 to be one of the three toppers from the city.

Four toppers are from Vijayawada, Secunderabad, Samalkot and Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh while one is from Delhi. Only one girl has reached the top 18 by scoring 99.99 percentile.

he safety of children travelling by school buses and private transport has been a topic of hot discussions over the last two months. However, as can clearly be seen in the pictures shot by our photojournalist Sushil Kadam, our children are far from safe, with over-crowded school vans, packed trains, cramped autorickshaws, school buses flouting traffic norms, and busy streets acting as potential disaster zones for kids making their way to school every day. Should parents become more responsible for their children’s safety, or should children continue to risk it? asks Claude lle Mo nis.

Pawar wants MCA case transferred

A

month after the Bombay High Court ordered that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar can continue functioning as president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Pawar filed an application in the city civil and sessions court in South Mumbai seeking transfer of the suit filed by senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde challenging MCA election to any other court.

On November 26, a lower court had passed an interim order restraining Pawar from functioning as MCA president, following which he approached the HC against that order.

A plea filed by BJP leader Gopinath Munde, had asked the lower court to restrain Pawar from functioning as MCA president pending hearing of his suit challenging his election. Munde had pleaded that the disqualification of

his candidature was ‘illegal’ and asked for fresh election for the post of the president. Munde’s application for the president’s post was rejected by the election officer on the basis of his residential status, observing that the address on his electoral registration was Beed.

According to MCA rules, only a Mumbai resident can become the president of the cricketing body.

“The final disposal of the suit will be based on interpretation of the provisions of Memorandum of Association and Rules of MCA. Since the provisions have already been exhaustively interpreted by the (judge), it is desirable that the suit be assigned to any other court for hearing and final disposal”, said Pawar in the application. The matter will be heard by Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi today.

‘MERC decides power tariff in Mumbai'

Reliance Infrastructure has said that the demand for revision in electricity tariff in Mumbai can only be considered by Maharashtra power regulator MERC. This has come in the backdrop of Congress, MP Sanjay Nirupam demanding a 50 per cent cut in the power tariff in Mumbai.

Demands include scrapping the fixed charge of Rs 100 per bill and regulatory asset charge of Rs 600 for consumption of over 500 units towards infrastructure, and replacement of defective electronic meters imported from China.

PIL challenges 15 paise surcharge in bus fare

The Bombay High Court has directed the state to file its response by January 24 on a PIL challenging collection of 15 paise surcharge on bus fare from every passenger for relief of Bangladesh refugees since 1971. The other respondents to the PIL include Thane Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and other transport bodies. The PIL said that the 15 paise surcharge is being collected by the state since 1971 after the Indo-Pak war, so that the refugees could be provided relief by the government. The PIL said that an amount of Rs 388.96 crore had been collected from commuters.

cricket match organized by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at the Santacruz Lions cricket club turned into a bloody battle field on Tuesday afternoon after a group of reportedly 200 men attacked a person for allegedly slapping the umpire during the match.

The whole scene of the cricket tournament changed, when locals from the area were informed that someone had slapped the umpire who was known to them. Within minutes approximately 200 of them armed with swords, bamboos, iron rods and other weapons reached the spot and ransacked the stage which was set up for the prize distribution ceremony.

he APMC last week, welcomed the Alphonso mango much before the season is expected to commence. However, those who cannot wait to taste the first fruit of the season, will have to shell out nearly Rs. 3,000 for a dozen of these mangoes.

Sanjay Pansare, Director, Fruit Market, APMC, said, "Over the last few years, business used to begin in February. But this year, the first crop of the fruit has already arrived from Deogadi, on the coast of Maharashtra.”

The raw mangoes that arrived in the market yestwere sold in minutes for Rs. 3000 a dozen. The rate however, was high as compared to last year where the first crop sold for Rs. 1, 200 a dozen. In the peak season, mangoes are generally sold for between Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 a dozen, depending on the quality.

major fire at a building in Mani Surat Compound at Rahnal in Bhiwandi on Monday midnight, destroyed approximately Rs.30 crore worth Priyagold biscuits and cans of body sprays that were stored in a large godown.

35 firefighters and 20 fire engines were called in from Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Thane and Mira Bhayandar to control the fire, which had engulfed a 50,000 square feet area.

On receiving a call from Rahnal, the fire control department rushed to the spot with its personnel and fire fighting equipment, but because the flames had spread to adjlining structures, it was very difficult for them to reach the godown.

To add to the problem, there were LPG cylinders exploding in the fire and also a shortage of water supply.

Even on Tuesday morning, fire fighters and officers were seen struggling to control the blaze, hampered by the thick smoke coming out

from the godown, which was used to store the popular Priyagold biscuits, body spray items for delivery to different parts of India. No one usually remained in the godown after 8 pm, said godown manager, Vijendra Singh.

AAP office vandalised in Aurangabad

Precious goods worth `91 lakh seized

Looks like it is an environment scam!

I

N the first place, why did former environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan resign last month? Was she asked to go? It look like the UPA itself was suspicious about her dealings and had taken action. She had held up a large number of projects – alleging violation of the environment. She had almost refused to give permission to a large number of projects, including some by the UPA government. She is alleged to have held up projects on flimsy grounds. She used to point out some violation of the environment and delayed giving permission.

She had held up two projects in Gujarat and that made Chief Minister Narendra Modi to refer to her response to projects as suspicious: He called it 'Jayanthi Tax'. What he was alleging was that Jayanthi Natarajan was receiving kickbacks. She has stated that Modi has told a lie and that her only concern was to protect the environment. There are allegations that she was misusing her position and held up important and urgently necessary projects.

What the UPA government should have done is not only left her resign but also conduct a small enquiry. There were many complaints from affected parties: The government did nothing. Actually, the government's reaction indicates a cover-up.

It is difficult to believe that the transactions of Jayanthi Natarajan did not attract government's attention. At least, when the project was on, the government should have taken action. What is to be noted is that within a short time – after her resignation – projects involving nearly Rs. 1.5 lakhcrore were cleared by the environment ministry.

This is one more case of corruption in the UPA government: It can only make the government go on the backfoot and in a denial mode. There have been many charges of corruption against it but the UPA government has not cared to take damage control measures.

NE of the most keenly watched contests of the 2014 Lok Sabha election will be the one between Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Kumar Vishwas in Amethi. Kumar Vishwas packed bori-bistar (as he called it) and set off for this high profile constituency to begin his campaign last weekend after warning family and friends to expect him back only after six months, when the election is over. Come to Amethi if you want to meet me, he told them.

Normally, Rahul and the Gandhis should have laughed off the challenge. Kumar Vishwas is a rank outsider from a newbie party with no presence whatsoever in Uttar Pradesh. Amethi, on the other hand, is the Gandhi family fiefdom. The constituency borders the other family stronghold of Rae Bareli and was represented in the Lok Sabha first by Sanjay Gandhi, then Rajiv Gandhi, then Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul.

Yet the family is worried. On Kumar’s first day out in Amethi, no less than Priyanka Vadra was monitoring his activities. Apparently, family retainer and old Rae Bareli-Amethi hand Kishori Lal had unleashed hordes of loyalists in the constituency to supply minute-by-minute reports which were faithfully passed on to Priyanka.

According to Congress sources, Lal was the one who organized the black flag demonstrations against Kumar Vishwas and arranged to have eggs thrown at him. Many feel it was an unwise move because it gave Kumar Vishwas unnecessary publicity and set him up as the underdog.

That could be dangerous because underdogs tend to get more than their fair share of sympathy. And sympathy is something Rahul and Priyanka, who is her brother’s campaign manager and strategist, certainly don’t want Kumar Vishwas to mop up. Although Amethi is a family fiefdom, the Gandhi charisma seems to be losing its sheen. In the 2012 assembly polls, the Congress failed to win a single seat in the Amethi district and in neighbouring Rae Bareli, it won just two out of ten. It was a miserable performance considering Priyanka had parked herself in the area for the entire duration of the campaign.

After he had become a student of the Buddha, he continued to learn and to practice. Finally, they became very good, very close friends. You know that the Buddha died at the age of eighty. King Pasenadi of Kosala also died just a few

months before the Buddha.

The third daughter of Anathapindika learned Buddhism very well. She practiced very well. She was wedded to a governor of a nearby country called Anga. The daughter introduced the governor to the teaching of the Buddha and he became a very good supporter of the Buddha Dharma, also. Anathpindika’s family was a very happy family, and their happiness came from the joy of supporting the Buddha, the Dharma, and the

JP circles are not quite sure what Nitin Gadkari is up to. He seems to be stepping on toes and sowing confusion all around. His latest blunder is the decision to endorse a Pune-based think tank’s proposal to scrap income-tax and showcase it as part of the BJP’s economic vision for 2050. Apparently, this was a unilateral move and the party’s PM nominee Narendra Modi had no inkling that Gadkari fancied himself as an economist, among other things.

The Modi camp is hopping mad with Gadkari for throwing the party’s weight behind the no-tax idea. It was an ill-conceived move, made worse by the fact that the proposal was laughed out of the window by prominent economists. Instead of looking like a serious party with carefully crafted ideas to repair the economy and restore growth, the BJP ended up with egg on its face. It was forced to backtrack and reject the proposal.

The fiasco has only served to deepen the barely concealed hostility between the different camps in the BJP. Anathapindika said, "No, Venerables, the pain in me is not decreasing. It is increasing all the time." There upon, Shariputra proposed that three of them practice together the practice of the recollections of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Shariputra is one of the most intelligent disciples of the Buddha. He knew that Anathapindika received a lot of pleasure every time he served the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

He wanted to water the seeds of happiness in the store consciousness of Anathapindika.

ndian law has direct influences from many Western countries along with its indigenous roots. It is thus regarded to be quite exhaustive and extensive in its dimensions, combining the traditional law practices of ancient India with contemporary legalities.

Some of the more commonly known branches of law include labour law, corporate law, civil law and criminal law.

LABOUR LAW

Labour Law deals with shops and establishment acts. In addition, it also involves PF, ESI, minimum wages, maternity, employees’ job hours, working conditions, the Factories Act, the Gratuity Act and the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Ramesh Soni, Management Consultant in Labour Law explains, “If one is a labour lawyer, one can practice in civil and criminal courts, deal with taxation and cyber crime issues. If one doesn’t wish to practice law, then one also has the option of being a consultant in labour law in any type of industry and in any company. In order to become consultants though, one doesn’t need to be a qualified lawyer, but needs to have practical experience in the field involving labour laws under a senior advocate or councillor. If one is practicing labour law, then one has the option of being a notary after 10-years of experience and a solicitor with at least 20-years of experience.

Labour law has a lot of scope and if individuals are knowledgeable about the field and have a genuine interest in it, they should do well for themselves.”

CORPORATE LAW

Corporate Law deals with the corporate aspects of mergers, amalgamations, reconstruction and acquisition of companies and includes all SEBI acts. There are innumerable career options within corporate law according to a leading professional expert in the field.

“Corporate law allows all possible career options for individuals involved in it.

Individuals can not only get into litigation, but can also substantiate their law qualification with other specialised degrees like Chartered Accountancy and Cost Accountancy.

Since corporate law also forms a core subject in MBA, having a background in corporate law along with an MBA in Finance is also an option that interested candidates can explore. The field has a bright future with increasing demand not just in legal circles, but also in financial ones as well,” the expert believes.

All legal cases pertaining to business transactions or commercial transactions which come under the purview of Civil Law. Civil law is one of the oldest existing forms of legal practice.

Criminal law, on the other hand, deals with all cases that come under the IPC Act, 1860 and include aspects like fraud; libel; crimes against religious sentiments, decency and morality; murder and manslaughter.

According to a legal expert, “Any transaction that requires monetary compensation comes under the ambit of civil law.

Cases filed under criminal act deal with prosecution and punishment as laid down in the IPC and Code of Criminal Procedure of 1973.”

All these categorisations form individual stream of two years’ specialisation – LLM (Master of Laws) – within the spectrum of education and career prospects in law. At the graduation level though, students learn about all facets of the subject which allows them to gain a wider understanding of the subject.

Despite glowing attributes about the field, there still prevails a certain mindset

To gain admission into law is quite difficult.

Potential entrants into the field can gain admission into the field either by opting for a three-year LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree after completion of a basic graduate degree in any stream. Students who opt for this course need to secure at least 70 per cent in their graduation exam in order to be eligible to take up law. Apart from this route to take up law studies, interested students can opt to take up a five-year law course immediately after the completion of their HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) exams.

Students who take up this option need to give a mandatory entrance test known as the CLAT. The CLAT (Combined Law Admission Test) is a comprehensive test that evaluates potential law students on their knowledge of English, current affairs, logical aptitude and knowledge of awareness of Indian law. After the completion of their LLB, individuals need to register with the

We, the citizens of India should become more aware about our responsibility towards the country, like for example stop bribing the police and littering, then India will definitely be able to relive its glorious past. If the major problems are looked upon then smaller issues of environment degradation, infrastructural problems, etc will be solved.

Inspite of the problems faced by our country we still stand strong and fight out everything with great pride and courage. And that’s why I’m proud to be a part of this country, I’m proud to be Indian.

I

ndia as a young country is teeming with ideas and enthusiasm. Ever since we opened our economy in 1991, entrepreneurs have thrived and new avenues have emerged. However, what has failed to change is our approach to handling projects. Be it the public sector or the private sector, there are abundant stories of projects that started with much promise but have fizzled out due to poor planning, inability to foresee and minimise uncertainties, and poor implementation.

Analysts today are increasingly coming to the conclusion that we as a nation lack a 'project mindset' and this is a lacunae that is slowing our success. While a lot of countries, most prominently China, have realised the need for trained and qualified project professionals, India is yet to wake up to this need. So, while we churn out thousands of management graduates every year, we do not produce enough people professionally equipped to handle projects.

Let’s begin by deliberating on the question: how handling projects is an expertise that needs separate qualification and competency.

Whatever we are doing today is for tomorrow, whether it is manufacturing, or service or infrastructure. Now, when we are working for tomorrow, the entire paradigm shifts to predicting how things will turn out in the future and how we plan to handle them. When we talk of the future, we have to take uncertainties into account because howsoever well we plan,

future is always uncertain.

Risk and uncertainties are linked; if there is a certainty, there is no risk. We know that two plus two is four and there is no risk involved in this – but if two plus two turns out to be something else that we don’t know, this poses risk. So, risk and uncertainties are intertwined and they have to be seen from that perspective. Therefore, when we start doing something, the uncertainty is very high and when we wrap up a project by completing hundred activities, the uncertainty at completion is almost zero as you have finished.

How fast you are able to reduce your uncertainties is the challenge. The faster you reduce them, the earlier you will make it zero (uncertainties) and time will be saved. If you manage to reduce the uncertainties slowly, time taken to make it to zero will be high. So, the rate of reduction of uncertainties is the crux of project management, however small to big and accelerating it is the key to project success.

Let’s say we have an infrastructure project for which a series of steps have to be initiated starting from getting environment clearance, land acquisition, tender process, and construction, the planner needs to understand that each one of these is a complicated process that can take time that needs to be accounted for in the planning stage itself. If consensus takes time in a democracy, that time has to be accounted for in the planning stage. The people involved are stakeholders, their conditions too will have to be considered.

Club Enerji’s ‘Energy Q & Carnival 2014’ winners announced C

lub Enerji, Tata Power’s nationwide energy conservation programme recently announced the champions of the National Energy Q 2014 in the grand finale organised at Community Centre, Tata Colony, Chembur. Energy Q and Carnival are the annual features that enable the Club to propagate the message of energy and resource conservation in a fun and more engaging manner. It is the culmination of the entire year’s sensitisation programme.

Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power graced the quiz competition and felicitated the winners of Energy Q 2014.

A total of 200 schools participated during the preliminary round in the respective cities. Post city finals, 36 teams participated in the quarter final round and 12 teams in the semifinals.

The final day of the competition included the all-day ‘Energy and Natural Resources Carnival’ which showcased intriguing projects by the school students on the themes of water management, energy conservation, fuel conservation, and environment protection.

Students presented working models which can be prototypes of newer and more sustainable technology and enthralled the audience with their talented performances which carried messages of conservation, gender equality and healthy lifestyle.

“I love the whole idea of getting paid to party,” says Yash Chandiramani, Co Founder and Partner, White Knight Entertainment and Hospitality am in the second year of BMS in Jai Hind College and I am yet to graduate. I was always drawn towards the glamorous life, loved the idea of late night parties, VIP nightclubs, limited entries and great music. That is why I started promoting nightclubs while I was in junior college, as a pure hobby, but I took keen interest and eventually realised that this could be scaled up thus encouraging me to start White Knight Entertainment.

I love the idea of getting paid to party, to have no restrictions in the most exclusive night spots of the city and the popularity it brought me. However, most importantly I love being at my creative best. I can plan and design everything, from what the theme will be, to what people will wear to the placements inside the club and when it comes to my own Lounge I can decide the menu with the wackiest recipes. I can keep doing what I love the most which is making people have the time of their life. I am also a trained DJ and a music lover so it is an added advantage for me.

I was originally in an engineering college, studying electronics and telecommunications. After two years of trying to figure out circuits, I realised that this is not what I want to do. So I started White Knight. A lot of people said I should complete my engineering since it does not matter what field you

get into as long as you have a strong degree.

However, I believed that if I want to do business I should educate myself in that field. It did not make sense studying something totally unrelated just because it has a high value in society. Thus against a lot of wishes I switched over to BMS and joined Jai Hind College even though it meant I had to restart from the first year and would always be two years behind my batch-mates. After two years I can feel the difference, in the way I look at my business, the way I conduct it, the information I get from my college course and research work etc. I won the best college going businessman pan India, last year.

The only training I received was when I promoted clubs under Nikhil Rochlani who happens to be my partner in White Knight now. He was the guy who taught me the tricks of the trade. The first advantage of my field is that the majority of work can be carried out from your home, as long as you have the internet it does not matter where you are. Every day I get more than what I had yesterday. Late nights can however be a problem, especially when you have a 7 am lecture the next day. Secondly, in my promotions business getting a contract is one thing, but getting paid for it is another task. It is very easy to get exploited.

There are a couple of things you must keep in mind if you want to start your own business. Firstly have realistic expectations, do not expect too much revenue at the start. Every business is started with a lot of enthusiasm; but that does not mean it will start generating income instantly. Secondly, do not fear failure. Failure teaches you a lot. The most important aspect is your passion for the business that causes you to defy everything and every single factor that goes against you. I personally feel in the end if the business idea is even average, the entrepreneur can make it a success if he has the passion and enthusiasm.

Beginning with level D, the certifications offer increasing levels of competency skills right up to level A which qualifies certified Project Directors. In India, while we have a good number of certified project professionals i.e level A qualified professionals, not many of them graduate to the higher skill breaker, which is disappointing. It is estimated that we have 50,000 certified project professionals in India, most of whom have been certified based on passing an exam. This is a good first step but they need to move up the ladder. Having an exam based certification must get transformed to competence assessment in managing projects. Here India lags dismally from global benchmark leading to problems and issues. We just have 114 Certified Project Managers (IPMA Level C), 17 Certified Senior Project Managers (IPMA Level B) and 12 Certified Project Directors (IPMA Level A).

India has the potential of becoming a force to reckon with. If we provide competency development to our hard working and brilliant project professionals they will do wonders.

According to an estimate, for India to become a success story that can nurture superpower dreams by 2022 we need at least 200 Certified Projects Directors (IPMA Level A), at least 2,000 Certified Senior Project Managers (IPMA Level B) and at least 20,000 Certified Project Managers (IPMA Level C).

Given limited resources, and with costs, time, scope and quality being ever-changing realities in an era of globalisation and e-technology, a management degree is not enough to helm projects. We need specialised skills. Behavioral and contextual sills are essential to lead and motivate team members. Here the role of qualification and education in project management becomes important.

tudents of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering unveiled their latest offering J-14, a fuel efficient car capable of achieving more than 300 kmpl designed and built by the second and third year engineering students of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering.

J-14 car is a single-seater that runs on petrol on a 35cc engine and would participate in an international level intercollegiate competition 'Shell Eco Marathon Race'

which will be held at Philippines in one of the most prestigious international competitions. There would be 150 teams participating from around 300 odd teams.

LIBERAL EDUCATION

Yes I definitely think there is the need for liberal education, because in India we have an education system which has been rendered obsolete. Also, I think teachers are not good enough and updated knowledge, and a change in the way of teaching has to be implemented. It will help students understand situations better in real life scenarios, besides making choices apart from merely learning stuff.

I think it’s fine if there is no liberal education in schools, but in college it would really be helpful, not to say necessary. In college, we are learning in order to get a job; we need practical education beyond the theory aspect. There is not point in just giving exams if we do not learn how to enter the practical and professional world.

There is a need of interaction between students and teachers. They should bring us knowledge and their experiences in life. We need to ask them more questions related to the courses, to life and our future job.

Yes, I do feel there is a need for liberal education, the Indian education system is more about learning things from books and writing them down even if it is not understood well. Rather new methods of interactive teaching should be introduced, leading to active participation of students.

Learning through PowerPoint presentations, involving students in these presentations help in understanding the subject in a much better way than just holding a text book in hand and repeating what's written in it. Also every subject explained should be followed with an example because examples are better remembered.

Emphasis should be laid on speaking as well as writing, because ultimately in life, people judge one by the way he/she talks. Personal attention to each and every student should be given. General knowledge sessions or charts should be put up in schools and colleges and imparting of practical knowledge should also be promoted.

Nowadays I see that children in a general don’t have the same drive or ambition as the previous generations. They don’t know how to set goals, or if they do, they are dissuaded by peer pressure. For this reason, it is very important that teachers and parents instill in children self confidence, ambition, concentration and raise us in an environment of love, respect and knowledge.

What am I but a product of my parents? It is thanks to them that I am what I am today. They have confidence in me and give me the freedom to make my own decisions, and it is because of them that I am my own person-unique and independent.

One shining example of how parents can change their children’s life is that of Liu Yiting, a Chinese schoolgirl studying in Harvard with a full scholarship. Her parents Zhiang Xinwu and Liu Weihva, started their daughters education when she was fifteen days old. Regular meal-

times were enforced. By age 3, she was doing household chores, and was assigned character building tasks such as long distance swims and holding an ice cube in her hand till her hand turned purple!! As for Liu, she is grateful to her parents, and she can be quoted saying “My parents gave me ability to create my own life and be happy and I am pretty goal oriented because of them.”

We spend most of our time in our home environment but a major part of our day is spent at college. Often, we don’t realize the power a teacher has on us, and sometimes a teacher herself doesn’t realize the effect she has on children. For many years, my ambition was to become a teacher, thanks to my awe inspiring teachers.

On Teachers Day, this year, I realized the effort our teachers put in for us. The strain of talking day in and day out and of walking to various classes day long was immense.

Lastly, our God, have you ever realized that a simple prayer before an exam or an event calms your nerves and encourages you. We may not see Him, but knowingly or not, we all believe in Him. For everything he takes away, He gives us more. We can thank Him for everything we haveour parents, a home, teachers, friends, and our safety.

These are our alchemists; they convert the base metal we are born as, into gold.

Whatever field you may choose to excel in, please know that these three will always be by your side.

EW DELHI: With its on-going nation-wide membership drive, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday claimed over 10 lakh people joined the outfit in the last five days.

The party also announced Adarsh Shastri, grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, and former IPS officer Uday Sahay have joined it, reports PTI. AAP had kick-started the membership drive campaign ‘Mein Bhi Aam Aadmi’ on January 10, with an aim of getting over 1 crore members by January 26. Senior party leader Gopal Rai, who is over-seeing the national membership drive, said over 6.6 lakh people joined the party by giving a missed call on a mobile number followed by 4.5 lakh who registered as members through its website.

Over 1 lakh SMSes were sent to the (mobile) number and the rest of the people have joined the party by manually filing a form.

“We have finished training of our volunteers. We will soon start over 300 district camps and hold membership camps. Our volunteers will do door-to-door campaigining for getting more people to join the party,” Rai said.

With the party receiving complaints that many people were not able to join it because of the busy mobile network, it announced two more mobile numbers (08082807715/08082807715) on which people can either send SMSes or call to become members.

HMEDABAD: Actor Salman Khan on Tuesday lauded Narendra Modi for development in Gujarat, but stopped short of publicly endorsing him as the future prime minister, saying “the best man should become the PM”.

It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6280 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then declined into the red and turned into a range bound movement until 12.55 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s high at the 6234 points level at 2.09 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 46 points. Ahead of the central bank's rate review on January 28, traders are eagerly awaiting December wholesale price inflation, which is seen at 7% is due today and will pave the future direction of the market. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 36 were losers, while 14 were gainers.

Sops Proposed For Oil Block Auction

In a bid to attract more global oil majors, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has proposed exemption from royalty payment and an income-tax holiday of up to 10 years for the next round of auction of oil and gas exploration blocks.

Says Twin-deficits make India second most risky emerging market

lobal private equity major KKR has ranked India second among the emerging markets on external risks, citing the high fiscal and current account deficits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our emerging market framework takes the view of avoiding twindeficits countries at this point,â&#x20AC;? the global fund said in its 2014 macro/asset allocation outlook.

The country ended FY13 with an all-time high current account deficit of 4.8 per cent of GDP, which is slated to have improved significantly to 3.05 per cent in the first half of the current fiscal and may even be lower for full fiscal. On the fiscal deficit front, India may struggle to achieve the targeted 4.8 per cent level as the government has already exhausted 94 per cent of target by November, analysts said.

New Gas Price Mechanism Positive For ONGC And Reliance, Says S&P

he Indian governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to increase domestic gas prices is likely to benefit Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC) and Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two main gas producers.Standard & Poorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ratings Services expects the new gas pricing mechanism to improve the cash flows and profitability of both ONGC and RIL to varying degrees. We also believe that the price increase will support the companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; high capital expenditure plans. However, the new pricing guideline does not affect our ratings on ONGC (BBB-/Negative/â&#x20AC;&#x201D;) and

RIL (BBB+/Negative/â&#x20AC;&#x201D;). The negative outlooks on the ratings reflect the negative outlook on the sovereign credit rating on India (unsolicited rating BBB-/Negative/A-3).

We anticipate that the increase in gas prices will significantly improve ONGCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s EBITDA by about 20%, compared with 5%-7% for RIL. The impact on RILâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s profitability is not likely to be as significant given the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s low gas production of about 13 million metric standard cubic meters per day.

Our financial forecasts for RIL already considered the benefit of a potential price increase. We expect the price revision to help ONGC main-

tain its ratio of funds from operations to debt at more than 60% over the next two to three years. Our view is based on the understanding that state-owned ONGC will not be required to bear any additional subsidy burden from the fertilizer or power sectors, which are likely to be adversely affected by the price increase.

The governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement reduces uncertainty over future gas prices, in our opinion. But the uncertainty will continue for RIL, given a legal dispute over the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to increase the gas prices for some of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gas blocks where production has significantly declined.

India Ratings Pegs GDP At 4.9%; Projects Improvement In FY15

ndiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth rate is expected to slip to 4.9% in the current fiscal but will improve significantly to 5.6% in 2014-15, India Ratings said today. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our expectation for improved growth in FYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;15 is based on a partial recovery in the industrial and services sector growth, and an uptick in investment due to project clearances by the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI),â&#x20AC;? said India Ratings, a Fitch group company.

The economic outlook report projected growth of 5.6% with farm sector expansion at 3%, industry 4.1% and services 6.9% in 2014-15 fiscal. Outlook for the Indian economy is looking significantly better now than it did in mid-2013 when the country was struggling with current account and fiscal deficit, falling rupee and high and stubborn inflation, it said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Better-than-expected monsoons, rising exports, swift policy as well as project clearance actions by the government and deft cur-

rency management by the RBI have improved business sentiments,â&#x20AC;? the report said. It projected average WPI-based inflation to decline to 5.5% in FYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;15, from 5.9% in 2013-14, which will lead to monetary easing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We expect the pressure on food prices to ease in FY15 on the back of normal monsoons. With the expected moderation in inflation in FYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;15, the agency expects RBIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s policy stance to gradually shift towards monetary easing. We expect a 0.50% reduction in repo rate in its base case,â&#x20AC;? India Ratings said. It further projected that the fiscal deficit will narrow to 4.5% in FYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;15 as the new government, post the general elections, will make efforts to adhere to fiscal consolidation.

For 2013-14, it said the fiscal deficit will remain closer to the budgeted level of 4.8%. It said the restrictions on gold imports and stable oil prices would likely restrict import growth and restrict Current Account Deficit to 2.2% of GDP in FYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;15.

The new centre has the capability to transform steel plate into a multitude of shaped and machined components, from high-volume production runs for off-road vehicle wheels and booms for earth-moving equipment, to large one-off

Switzerland Ready To Discuss Tax Info Exchange With India

ntensifying efforts to address Indian concerns over alleged stashing of illicit funds in Swiss banks, Switzerland will send a delegation to India to discuss the â&#x20AC;&#x153;current situationâ&#x20AC;? and define measures for greater cooperation on tax matters.

Switzerland has also agreed to an OECD global automatic exchange of tax information framework, which would further enhance its information exchange mechanism with India after becoming operational, a Swiss government official said.

There have been concerns in India about limited flow of tax information from Switzerland about Indian citizens who have allegedly stashed away unaccounted money

in Swiss banks. Despite efforts by the Alpine nation to shed its banking secrecy tag, Switzerland is still perceived in some quarters to be a safe haven and to be reluctant in sharing information. Seeking to dispel such perceptions, Switzerlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Federal Department of Finance said that it has intensified its efforts in the field of information exchange to explain Swiss laws and practice to the Indian authorities in a transparent way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For doing so, a Swiss delegation is prepared to travel to New Delhi to discuss the current situation and, if need be, define measures for enhancing the collaboration in tax matters,â&#x20AC;? a Swiss Federal Department of Finance spokesperson told PTI from Bern in reply to emailed queries.

ELBOURNE: Third seed Maria Sharapova clawed her way into the Australian Open second round Tuesday with a straight-sets win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands as she seeks her first Grand Slam title since the 2012 French Open.

The glamorous Russian, on the comeback trail from a shoulder injury that forced her off the tour in August, battled past the tough American 6-3, 6-4 but her game was marred by too many errors and a serve that failed to fire. "After (missing) my last Grand Slam in New York I have been so looking forward to this one and I was really happy to start," she said.

"She was a tough opponent and I'm just happy to get through the first one. I have had trouble against her in the past and I knew it would be no different tonight."

The four-time Grand Slam winner, in a powder blue dress, only made her return at the Brisbane International this month where she lost to bitter rival and eventual champion Serena Williams in the semi-finals. Sharapova, who was using an ice vest even at 11:00 pm after a scorching hot day, won't be relishing a possible final meeting with Williams, who has a 15-2 record in their career meetings. Now working with coach Sven Groeneveld after a failed, onetournament partnership with Jimmy Connors, Sharapova comfortably held her serve then scored an early break when Mattek-Sands pushed a forehand long.

She was playing aggressive tennis and forcing errors from the American, which cost her dearly with the third seed racing to a 4-0

lead. But the colourful MattekSands, sporting purple dyed hair and her trademark knee socks, forced her way back into the game when Sharapova drove a forehand long to give her a glimmer of hope.

ELBOURNE: Players fainted and vomited and a ball boy collapsed as the Australian Open boiled in one of the hottest days in its history, prompting angry complaints and keeping fans away in droves.

Temperatures of 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit), enough to melt plastic bottles on the rubberised courts, made for a punishing day for the players with some incensed their matches went ahead. Canada's Frank Dancevic lashed out at the "inhumane" playing conditions after he blacked out and needed treatment during his first-round defeat to Benoit Paire.

"I think it's inhumane, I don't think it's fair to anybody, to the players, to the fans, to the sport, when you see players pulling out of matches, passing out," he said.

"I've played five-set matches all my life and being out there for a set-anda-half and passing out with heat-stroke, it's not normal. "Having players with so many problems and complaining to the tournament that

Chinese player Peng Shuai cramped and vomited during her loss to Japan's Kurumi Nara, and also received a violation for time-wasting at a moment when she said she was unable to walk. "I was just cramping and I couldn't stand up. Both legs, my hamstrings were cramping," she said.

"I had no energy, I couldn't run, I couldn't serve," she said, blaming the heat for her defeat. "So it's impossible to play tennis like this."

There was no immediate response from tournament officials to the complaints.

ELBOURNE: India's campaign in the singles event came to an end after Somdev Devvarman went down to 26th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets in the opening round here.

The unseeded Indian showed a lot of fighting spirit before going down 4-6 4-6 6-7 (2) to World No. 27 in a two-hour and 13 minutes men's singles contest here at the Melbourne Park. Lopez will now take on unseeded German Michael Berrer, who knocked out Michael Llodra of France 6-4 7-5 6-1.

World number 97 Indian won a total of 89 points as compared to Lopez's 110. In the first set, Somdev got a great opportunity to make a mark as he got two break points, but the 28-year-old failed to convert even one. Lopez, on the other hand, used the lone break point he got to his advantage and easily sealed the set in his favour.

In the second set, Somdev showed a lot of improvement as he managed to save two of the three break

Jaiveer survives Bijlani’s scare M

UMBAI: Maharashtra State Selection junior champion Jaiveer Dhingra survived a scare before advancing to the third round, in the Matunga Gymkhana-Dadar Club Open Snooker Tournament on Tuesday.

Playing his opening match in the competition after earning a second round bye, Dhingra initiated a late burst to overcome Sanjiv Bijlani of Park Club 66-23, 29-45, 41-54, 80-8, 65-29 in the most absorbing contest of the day.

Dhingra got off to a good start with a break of 48 in the opening frame. But the formidable Bijlani came back strongly to surprise his opponent by winning the next two frames that included a tight third.

Dhingra finally found the form and fired significant breaks of 51 in the fourth and 39 in the decider to end Bijlani’s determined challenge.

Kenkre pip PIFA in the opening game of the U-19 I-League M UMBAI: Kenkre Sports edged past PIFA 2-1 in their opening match of the Maharashtra Zone of the U-19 I-League Tournament, which kicked off at Goans Sports ground on Tuesday.

There are five teams in this zone, namely Mumbai FC, Pune FC, PIFA, Kenkre Sports & AIFF Navi Mumbai Academy.

The teams will play each other on a home and away basis and

the winner of this league phase will qualify for Phase two of the tournament.

The match between Kenkre Sports and PIFA began at a fast clip with both teams having their fair share of possession. It was evenly balanced going into halftime and looked like the score would remain goalless, but Arish Sutaria slotted home just before half-time to give Kenkre the lead.

PIFA came out strong in the second half and got their rewards when Valentine Pereira equalized with a neat finish in the 58th minute. Thereafter, both teams, created chances but failed to convert.

In the end it was Shaun Fernandes who netted home in the 68th minute to give Kenkre the lead and the win in their opening game of this tournament.

R A Podar boys and girls excel in IMG-Reliance College League

MUMBAI: The first week of the Mumbai leg of the IMG–Reliance College League organized by the Basketball Federation of India was dominated by R A Podar College of Commerce & Economics. The girls had it easy against HR College and Ruia College, winning their league games 35-18 and 3710 respectively. The Podar girls, champions in the Inter-Collegiate tournament held in the end of 2013 and strengthened with the addition of players from their junior college as well for this league are expected to finish on top of Pool A. Rashmi V top scored for Podar with eight points and Pooja Lalwani did bulk of the scoring for H R with 14 points including 2 from behind the three point arc.

In the game against Ruia, Ankita N had 12 points and Sarah Vora had 14 points for Podar. The Podar boys had to toil their way to an upset victory against HR, runners up in the inter collegiate tournament.

ICL ‘B’ blunt Juhu Sparks ‘B’

MUMBAI: Indian Cultural League (ICL) ‘B’ got the better of Juhu Sparks ‘B’ 2-1 in a Third Division match of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) league at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel on Tuesday afternoon. The goal scorers for ICL were K Fernandes and Aakash Indulkar, while Joaquim V pulled one back for the losing side. Later in a Second Division encounter, Challengers FC and Saki Village Boys shared honours as they were engaged in a 1-1 draw. The 2005 Monaco World Athletics Finals (September 9-10), competed by top eight athletes of that time, was held a few weeks after the 2005 World Athletics Championships (August 6-14) in Helsinki, and hence Kotova's result in the latter event has now been deleted from the record books.

The Athletics Federation of India is yet to receive the official communication from the IAAF though the world body's website has updated the results of the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monaco with Anju is now being listed as the gold medal winner with an effort of 6.75m.

AFI President Adille Sumariwala said that he is expecting the official communication from the IAAF shortly.

EW DELHI: Long jumper Anju Booby George expressed happiness after her second place finish at the 2005 Monaco World Athletics Final was upgraded to a gold medal, saying the frustrating time she endured for last nine years was worth the wait.

Anju became the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal in a major world event after international governing body IAAF upgraded her second place finish at the 2005 Monaco World Athletics Final to the top spot, following a dope violation by a Russian competitor Tatyana Kotova.

Churchill begin Federation Cup campaign with a win

KOCHI: Churchill Brothers scraped past United SC in the inaugural match of the 35th Federation Cup football tournament.

All the three goals came in the first half with Abdel Hamid Shabana (5th minute) and Balwant Singh (17th) scoring for Churchill while Ranti Martins (43rd) reduced the margin for United in the Group A match at the the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

In another match at Manjeri, the second venue, Dempo Sports Club came back from a goal down to beat Bhawanipore FC 2-1 at the MDSC Stadium. Churchill Brothers, who were struggling badly in the season so far, surged into the lead as early as the fifth minute trough Egyptian recruit Shabana. The lead helped them seize the momentum early. Balwant doubled th lead in the 18th minute. Both the goals came after Churchill Brothers' beat United's off-side trap.

"I have been told by the AFI that I will get the gold in the Monaco World Athletics Finals. I am really happy and the wait was worth it," she told PTI. "I had always some doubt about some of the top Russian women long jumpers of my time and I knew that they could have been in dope," she said.

Russian Tatyana Kotova was found last year to have been caught for doping after her samples collected during the 2005 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki was found to contain traces of banned substance.

"I am happy with the Padma Shri. What difference does it make to me if I am now given a higher Padma Award? The people of India knows my achievements. I did not want to run around for a Padma Bhushan or Vibhushan," he said.

IN BRIEF Disqualification is Indian athletes main worry in Winter Olympics

NEW DELHI: Already deprived of the privilege of playing under the national flag in next month's Winter Olympics, two of the three Indians athletes participating in the Sochi Games are now worried about facing disqualification for lack of equipments.

Alpine skier Himanshu Thakur and cross country competitor Nadeem Iqbal will have to buy new sports kits for the February 7-23 Sochi Winter Games or face disqualifications if the Sports Ministry does not release the necessary funds. "I have to buy the whole sports kits as the ones I am using now will not be accepted in Sochi. I am fearing that I may be thrown out at the starting line," Himanshu told PTI from Shemshak in Iran where he is participating in an event as part of his preparation for the Games. "The whole sports kit will cost at least Rs 6 lakh at the minimum. It can be more according to quality. I don't have the money to buy the equipments. Whatever the money I had, I had spent on participating in events outside India to get qualified for the Games," he said.

Make changes, prepare spinning track: Waqar Younis

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain, Waqar Younis has advised the national team management to press for changes in the side and go for a spinning track in the third Test against Sri Lanka at Sharjah.

Sri Lanka won the second Test in Dubai and now lead the three match series by one nil.

Pakistan need to win the final Test in Sharjah starting from Thursday in order to avoid their first ever Test series defeat in the United Arab Emirates since 2002 when they lost two successive Tests to Australia in Sharjah. "I think Pakistan need to rethink their strategy for this match and make changes. Pakistan keen to have bilateral hockey series with India: PHF

KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation said it has resumed talks with the Indian hockey authorities to have a bilateral series as soon as possible. PHF President, Akhtar Rasool told a media briefing in Lahore yesterday that he was keen to have a bilateral series with India in both countries not only to improve the financial health of Pakistan hockey but also to revive interest in the sport in the country. "The inconsistent performance of our team since last year has hit the popularity of hockey in the country and we need a series to lift its sagging image among the people," Rasool said. He said it was difficult to get sponsorship and people to the stadiums for hockey unless people followed the sport like they used to do in the past.

Abhijeet maintains sole lead after playing draw with Rajpara

NEW DELHI: Overnight leader Abhijeet Gupta maintained his sole lead after signing peace with IM Ankit Rajpara in the eighth round of the 12th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament.
