ardly has some time passed since resident doctors across the State rejoiced the fact that the implementation of the Doctors' Protection Act will deter people from assaulting doctors, Dr. Gaurav Haldankar, a resident doctor from the surgery department at BMC run Rajawadi hospital, Ghatkopar was assaulted during the wee hours of January 14 by a man named Asif Sheikh who had come to the hospital seeking medical assistance. The incident led to an outrage among the doctors at the hospital and they stopped working declaring a strike till the security of doctors was taken care of. The injury caused due to the assault, said fellow doctors at Rajawadi hospital, could have proved fatal had it been slightly deeper.

What happened: Speaking about the incident, Dr. Khizer Doctor, surgical registrar, Rajawadi hospital said, “At around 12:30 am on January 14, Sheikh came to Rajawadi with a small cut on his finger that was bleeding. At that time, Dr. Haldankar was busy stabilising a patient who had just been brought in and was serious as he had a stomach perforation. So I gave Sheikh the primary treatment for his wound which was not serious and then asked him to keep the wound pressed and wait for some time as we had other important cases to attend. But Asif kept coming inside the casualty demanding treatment. When Dr. Haldankar

We don't know from where he got the blade but he used it to attack Dr. Haldankar on his neck. Dr. Haldankar somehow body blocked him. Then the security and other staff came to his rescue and Sheikh was locked in a nearby room. Then we went to the police station for lodging a complaint. The man who attacked Dr. Haldankar was under the influence of alcohol. Had the cut gone deeper into the neck, Dr. Haldankar could have lost his life due to excessive

he safety of children travelling by school buses and private transport has been a topic of hot discussions over the last two months. However, as can clearly be seen in the pictures shot by our photojournalist Sushil Kadam, our children are far from safe, with over-crowded school vans, packed trains, cramped autorickshaws, school buses flouting traffic norms, and busy streets acting as potential disaster zones for kids making their way to school every day. Should parents become more responsible for their children’s safety, or should children continue to risk it? asks Claude lle Mo nis. 1) This van in Matunga has almost 20 school children crammed into it. 2) These school kids in Govandi see no danger in leaning out of a running train and trying to touch the pillars. 3) This bike rider in Dadar seems to think that four kids on a bike isn’t too many at all. 4) Ten school children squeezed in an autorickshaw in Mankhurd. 5) A woman pulls a child across a busy street in Sion, ignoring the traffic. 6) School kids crossing the tracks between Govandi and Mankhurd due to the lack of an FOB, changing their route based on the trains. 7&8) Based on regulations, school buses should be like the one in Pic 7. However, several school buses like the one in Pic 8 are not painted the mandatory yellow and do not have protective bars on windows.

Pawar wants MCA case transferred By Philip Varghese

A

month after the Bombay High Court ordered that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar can continue functioning as president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Pawar filed an application in the city civil and sessions court in South Mumbai seeking transfer of the suit filed by senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde challenging MCA election to any other court. On November 26, a lower court had passed an interim order restraining Pawar from functioning as MCA president, following which he approached the HC against that order. A plea filed by BJP leader Gopinath Munde, had asked the lower court to restrain Pawar from functioning as MCA president pending hearing of his suit challenging his election. Munde had pleaded that the disqualification of

his candidature was ‘illegal’ and asked for fresh election for the post of the president. Munde’s application for the president’s post was rejected by the election officer on the basis of his residential status, observing that the address on his electoral registration was Beed. According to MCA rules, only a Mumbai resident can become the president of the cricketing body. “The final disposal of the suit will be based on interpretation of the provisions of Memorandum of Association and Rules of MCA. Since the provisions have already been exhaustively interpreted by the (judge), it is desirable that the suit be assigned to any other court for hearing and final disposal”, said Pawar in the application. The matter will be heard by Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi today.

A cricket tournament organised by the NCP turned into a violent fight after the umpire was allegedly assaulted by a player from one of the teams By Zuber Ansari

A

cricket match organized by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at the Santacruz Lions cricket club turned into a bloody battle field on Tuesday afternoon after a group of reportedly 200 men attacked a person for allegedly slapping the umpire during the match. The whole scene of the cricket tournament changed, when locals from the area were informed that someone had slapped the umpire who was known to them. Within minutes approximately 200 of them armed with swords, bamboos, iron rods and other weapons reached the spot and ransacked the stage which was set up for the prize distribution ceremony. The quarrel allegedly erupted when the umpire Sundar Singh Janiya (25), who was hired by the Lions Club of Santacruz, declared the ball bowled by Deepak Mulaya

errorism needs to be uprooted. To restore a more sensitised focus within communities to maintain peace and harmony, the passing of the Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill in Parliament (Access to Justice and Reparations) is a must,” said Dr. Zeenat Shaukat Ali, Director General of the The Wisdom Foundation, which had organized a dialogue entitled 'Taking India Forward' at St. Xavier's College recently. Among those who attended the dialogue were Justice B.N. Srikrishna (Retd.), Dr. Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas, Principal, St. Xavier's College, and Rahul Singh, writer and journalist. Justice B. N. Srikrishna, who was also among the panel of speakers at the dialogue, recalled the pain he felt while probing the 1992-93 Mumbai riots. Activist Ram Puniyani said that to make the police accountable it was necessary to pass a strong anti-communal violence law and Irfan Engineer, Director , Center for the Study of Society and Secularism also supported the view that to stem institutionalized communalism, a strong law against communal violence was needed. “The Constitution mandates us to be a socialist, secular and democratic polity. Socialism calls for a minimization of social cleavages and disparities. It puts the spotlight on social justice. And the essence of our democracy is the dignity of citizens irrespective of their caste,

Communal politics is an anathema to secular democracy. Perhaps this points to an ironic reality of systems seeking gain through divisive politics. Acts of violence need to be eradicated. The secular, plural paradigm marked by its ideals of fairness and equality towards all its citizens, must sustain and fortify secular democracy,” Ali added. The panel has prepared a citizens charter for the demand on the passing and implementation of the prevention and targeted violence (access to justice and reparations) bill. The charter includes appointing a committee of historians like Dr. Romilla Thappar, Dr. Irfan Habib, Prof. Mushirul Hassan and other renowned historians to examine history text books for stu-

dents at the school and college levels; bring about a law to halt and make punishable hate literature, through print, in writing and emails; create meaningful communal harmony programs designed by the Wisdom Foundation in the form of television programs, round tables, seminars, art exhibitions, music, sports and the reading of poetry; facilitate an exchange of knowledge and philosophy between leaders of different religious traditions; celebrate democracy and secularism through publications and television programs sponsored by the Government of India; table and pass the bill on the prevention of communal and targeted violence (access to justice and reperations) in parliament.

ffering a paid-lift to unidentified persons proved near-fatal for a Mumbai-based driver who was brutally assaulted and left to die near Valiv village on the MumbaiAhmedabad Highway during the early hours of Tuesday. According to the police, the victim who has been identified as Sanjeet Lal Dev (35), works as a driver for a Vile Parle based car rental company. Dev was returning home in an SUV after dropping some passengers in Chakradhar Nagar area of Nalasopara when he was accosted by two men seeking a lift to Mumbai to which Dev agreed after settling for a particular amount as payment for

the ride. When the SUV reached Dhumaal Nagar near Vasai, the two overpowered Dev. They then tied his hands and mounted a violent assault on him before fleeing with the vehicle. A passerby spotted a blood-soaked Dev and informed the police who immediately reached the spot and rushed him to the Golden Park Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical. The police have registered a case of theft and brutal assault against the unidentified duo, who are believed to be members of a gang of carjackers operating along isolated stretches of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. Assistant Police Inspector Dinesh Tayde of the Valiv police station is investigating the case.

On receiving a call from Rahnal, the fire control department rushed to the spot with its personnel and fire fighting equipment, but because the flames had spread to adjlining structures, it was very difficult for them to reach the godown. To add to the problem, there were LPG cylinders exploding in the fire and also a shortage of water supply. Even on Tuesday morning, fire fighters and officers were seen struggling to control the blaze, hampered by the thick smoke coming out

from the godown, which was used to store the popular Priyagold biscuits, body spray items for delivery to different parts of India. No one usually remained in the godown after 8 pm, said godown manager, Vijendra Singh. D.N. Salve, Chief Fire Officer from Bhiwandi, said, “The fire was very massive and our fire fighters had to struggle to control it. Be-

cause of LPG cylinders and deo spray cans exploding in the godown, we had to take precautions to prevent injuries to our personnel. We also faced shortages of water, which was the main reason why it took so much time to bring the situation under control, which happened only in the morning. Fortunately, no one has been reported injured in this incident.’’

Shekhar Tolani, a National College graduate and Director of Sahib Reality based in Khar, has decided to support the cause of the ‘Adivasi’ tribal children living in forest and has approached the Maharashtra state education department for the upliftment of the tribal children in the colony. “I have been reading about the tribal community in the forest areas of SGNP and Aarey. But I have written a letter to the state education department to give free-schooling facilities to the tribal children. Soon, I am providing portable electricity, sanitation and basic immunities for their mobile residence. The Sena too is likely to renominate Rajkumar Dhoot but the party is undecided on whether to renominate Raut. The quota of votes needed for the seven candidates to get elected from Maharashtra is 37 votes. Although the BJP has 47 MLAs in the lower house, it will need the 10 surplus votes to be transferred to its ally – the Sena – which needs them to add up to get its second candidate elected. The Sena which has 45 MLAs needs 74 votes to get its two candidates elected and needs 19 more votes to ensure its second candidate gets elected. These equations will matter only if there is a eighth candidate in the poll fray and the political parties manage to put up just seven candidates for the seven seats. Ponder awhile… “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Looks like it is an environment scam! I

N the first place, why did former environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan resign last month? Was she asked to go? It look like the UPA itself was suspicious about her dealings and had taken action. She had held up a large number of projects – alleging violation of the environment. She had almost refused to give permission to a large number of projects, including some by the UPA government. She is alleged to have held up projects on flimsy grounds. She used to point out some violation of the environment and delayed giving permission. She had held up two projects in Gujarat and that made Chief Minister Narendra Modi to refer to her response to projects as suspicious: He called it 'Jayanthi Tax'. What he was alleging was that Jayanthi Natarajan was receiving kickbacks. She has stated that Modi has told a lie and that her only concern was to protect the environment. There are allegations that she was misusing her position and held up important and urgently necessary projects. What the UPA government should have done is not only left her resign but also conduct a small enquiry. There were many complaints from affected parties: The government did nothing. Actually, the government's reaction indicates a cover-up. It is difficult to believe that the transactions of Jayanthi Natarajan did not attract government's attention. At least, when the project was on, the government should have taken action. What is to be noted is that within a short time – after her resignation – projects involving nearly Rs. 1.5 lakhcrore were cleared by the environment ministry. This is one more case of corruption in the UPA government: It can only make the government go on the backfoot and in a denial mode. There have been many charges of corruption against it but the UPA government has not cared to take damage control measures.

NE of the most keenly watched contests of the 2014 Lok Sabha election will be the one between Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Kumar Vishwas in Amethi. Kumar Vishwas packed bori-bistar (as he called it) and set off for this high profile constituency to begin his campaign last weekend after warning family and friends to expect him back only after six months, when the election is over. Come to Amethi if you want to meet me, he told them. Normally, Rahul and the Gandhis should have laughed off the challenge. Kumar Vishwas is a rank outsider from a newbie party with no presence whatsoever in Uttar Pradesh. Amethi, on the other hand, is the Gandhi family fiefdom. The constituency borders the other family stronghold of Rae Bareli and was represented in the Lok Sabha first by Sanjay Gandhi, then Rajiv Gandhi, then Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul. Yet the family is worried. On Kumar’s first day out in Amethi, no less than Priyanka Vadra was monitoring his activities. Apparently, family retainer and old Rae Bareli-Amethi hand Kishori Lal had unleashed hordes of loyalists in the constituency to supply minute-by-minute reports which were faithfully passed on to Priyanka. According to Congress sources, Lal was the one who organized the black flag demonstrations against Kumar Vishwas and arranged to have eggs thrown at him. Many feel it was an unwise move because it gave Kumar Vishwas unnecessary publicity and set him up as the underdog. That could be dangerous because underdogs tend to get more than their fair share of sympathy. And sympathy is something Rahul and Priyanka, who is her brother’s campaign manager and strategist, certainly don’t want Kumar Vishwas to mop up. Although Amethi is a family fiefdom, the Gandhi charisma seems to be losing its sheen. In the 2012 assembly polls, the Congress failed to win a single seat in the Amethi district and in neighbouring Rae Bareli, it won just two out of ten. It was a miserable performance considering Priyanka had parked herself in the area for the entire duration of the campaign. Journos who visited the constituencies were surprised by the rumblings against mother

Ramesh did the unthinkable when he said the Congress could learn a thing or two from AAP. According to Congress sources, both statements were trial balloons floated by the party for possible post poll arrangements to stop Narendra Modi and the BJP from forming the next government. The ruling party is reconciled to getting the worst possible drubbing ever in the forthcoming polls. It’s minimum programme is to prop up a third front type government so that Modi doesn’t become prime minister. Shinde was asked to float Pawar’s name as a possible PM candidate and Ramesh tested the waters for an AAP-led government. The Congress is simultaneously fanning AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s ambitions. Her recent remark that it was time for someone from Tamil Nadu to lead the country was a response to Congress feelers about a Jaya-led dispensation. The games have begun even before polls have taken place.

NATHAPINDIKA, Buddha’s disciple, spent a lot of time, energy building the practice center for the Buddha and his monks. He took a lot of pleasure serving the Buddha, serving the sangha. His family did not know anything about Buddhism. They had to learn a lot from other teachers. But this time, they were very united as a family. He had three daughters and a son. He also had a young brother named Subbutti. Subbutti later became a very illustrious monk. You learn about him in the Diamond Sutra. Subutti, the one who practice the deep vision on emptiness. They came to listen to the Dharma talk given by the Buddha at the Jeta Grove every week. The Jeta Grove became a very beautiful and famous practice center. The King of Kosala also came and listened and became a student and a very good friend of the Buddha. The King of Kosala was born in the same year as the Buddha. After he had become a student of the Buddha, he continued to learn and to practice. Finally, they became very good, very close friends. You know that the Buddha died at the age of eighty. King Pasenadi of Kosala also died just a few

months before the Buddha. The third daughter of Anathapindika learned Buddhism very well. She practiced very well. She was wedded to a governor of a nearby country called Anga. The daughter introduced the governor to the teaching of the Buddha and he became a very good supporter of the Buddha Dharma, also. Anathpindika’s family was a very happy family, and their happiness came from the joy of supporting the Buddha, the Dharma, and the

His beloved lay disciples. Anathapindika said that he has only one thing that he is sorry about. He is very satisfied with his life, his family, his practice. He is only sorry about one thing: that he is too weak to come to the Jena Grove every week to listen to the Dharma talk. He wanted to be there at every Dharma talk of the Buddha. JP circles are not quite sure what Nitin Gadkari is up to. He seems to be stepping on toes and sowing confusion all around. His latest blunder is the decision to endorse a Pune-based think tank’s proposal to scrap income-tax and showcase it as part of the BJP’s economic vision for 2050. Apparently, this was a unilateral move and the party’s PM nominee Narendra Modi had no inkling that Gadkari fancied himself as an economist, among other things. The Modi camp is hopping mad with Gadkari for throwing the party’s weight behind the no-tax idea. It was an ill-conceived move, made worse by the fact that the proposal was laughed out of the window by prominent economists. Instead of looking like a serious party with carefully crafted ideas to repair the economy and restore growth, the BJP ended up with egg on its face. It was forced to backtrack and reject the proposal. The fiasco has only served to deepen the barely concealed hostility between the different camps in the BJP. The Modi camp just cannot shake off suspicions that a section of the party is waiting to trip Modi up and prevent him from becoming PM. to you, my disciples are me, to take care of you and help you to practice even if you cannot come to the Jena Grove." Venerable Shariputra was also a very close friend of Anathapindika. He used to come visit him very often and help him. One morning Shariputra learned that Anathapindika was dying. He thought that maybe this would be his last visit and he asked his younger brother in the Dharma, Ananda, to come along. When they arrived, Anathapindika could not sit up in his bed. Shariputra said, "No my friend, don't try. Just lay down quietly. We will bring a few chairs close to you and we will be together." The first question he asked is "Dear friend, Anathapindika, how do you feel? Is the pain in your body increasing or has it begun to decrease?" Anathapindika said, "No, Venerables, the pain in me is not decreasing. It is increasing all the time." There upon, Shariputra proposed that three of them practice together the practice of the recollections of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Shariputra is one of the most intelligent disciples of the Buddha. He knew that Anathapindika received a lot of pleasure every time he served the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. He wanted to water the seeds of happiness in the store consciousness of Anathapindika. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Let the Khobragades fight their own battle IT is very sad that Devyani Khobragade and her father Uttam Khobragade are taking the country for a ride. It is not correct to strain India’s relation with the US, irrespective of who is right or wrong. The kind of statements both father and daughter are making is suitable only for politicians. Now cat is out of the bag that Uttam Khobragade has expressed his intention of fighting the general election. The whims and fancies of selectors put paid hopes of a stylish player like Virender Sehwag. Players like Sachin Tendulkar were given a long rope, whereas a dependable batsman, VVS Laxman was made to quit Test cricket rather abruptly. That is the way of Indian cricket. However, Sehwag was not coming in the scheme of things for some time and was allowed to fade out and removed from the main team. The fault lies with Sehwag as well. Firstly, he agreed to open the innings for Team India in all the three formats even though his footwork was faulty. An opener needs sound technique to play genuine fast bowling. Again, the Delhi cricketer started as a middle order batsman and he even scored a century on his appearance. Later on he was shifted to the top slot and made to slug it out down the order as well. Law is one of the oldest and highly sought-after educational and career options. The myriad components it comprises within itself, makes it a highly challenging field to further one’s education and career. And it is these distinctive yet lesserknown aspects of law that make the field a hugely misunderstood one. Sharada Iyer speaks to experts in the field about the kinds of law and their scope.

I

ndian law has direct influences from many Western countries along with its indigenous roots. It is thus regarded to be quite exhaustive and extensive in its dimensions, combining the traditional law practices of ancient India with contemporary legalities. Some of the more commonly known branches of law include labour law, corporate law, civil law and criminal law.

LABOUR LAW

Labour Law deals with shops and establishment acts. In addition, it also involves PF, ESI, minimum wages, maternity, employees’ job hours, working conditions, the Factories Act, the Gratuity Act and the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Ramesh Soni, Management Consultant in Labour Law explains, “If one is a labour lawyer, one can practice in civil and criminal courts, deal with taxation and cyber crime issues. If one doesn’t wish to practice law, then one also has the option of being a consultant in labour law in any type of industry and in any company. In order to become consultants though, one doesn’t need to be a qualified lawyer, but needs to have practical experience in the field involving labour laws under a senior advocate or councillor. If one is practicing labour law, then one has the option of being a notary after 10-years of experience and a solicitor with at least 20-years of experience. Labour law has a lot of scope and if individuals are knowledgeable about the field and have a genuine interest in it, they should do well for themselves.”

CORPORATE LAW

Corporate Law deals with the corporate aspects of mergers, amalgamations, reconstruction and acquisition of companies and includes all SEBI acts. There are innumerable career options within corporate law according to a leading professional expert in the field. “Corporate law allows all possible career options for individuals involved in it. Individuals can not only get into litigation, but can also substantiate their law qualification with other specialised degrees like Chartered Accountancy and Cost Accountancy. Since corporate law also forms a core subject in MBA, having a background in corporate law along with an MBA in Finance is also an option that interested candidates can explore. The field has a bright future with increasing demand not just in legal circles, but also in financial ones as well,” the expert believes. Continued on pg 14 «

CIVIL LAW & CRIMINAL LAW

All legal cases pertaining to business transactions or commercial transactions which come under the purview of Civil Law. Civil law is one of the oldest existing forms of legal practice. Criminal law, on the other hand, deals with all cases that come under the IPC Act, 1860 and include aspects like fraud; libel; crimes against religious sentiments, decency and morality; murder and manslaughter. According to a legal expert, “Any transaction that requires monetary compensation comes under the ambit of civil law. Cases filed under criminal act deal with prosecution and punishment as laid down in the IPC and Code of Criminal Procedure of 1973.” All these categorisations form individual stream of two years’ specialisation – LLM (Master of Laws) – within the spectrum of education and career prospects in law. At the graduation level though, students learn about all facets of the subject which allows them to gain a wider understanding of the subject. Despite glowing attributes about the field, there still prevails a certain mindset

To gain admission into law is quite difficult. Potential entrants into the field can gain admission into the field either by opting for a three-year LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree after completion of a basic graduate degree in any stream. Students who opt for this course need to secure at least 70 per cent in their graduation exam in order to be eligible to take up law. Apart from this route to take up law studies, interested students can opt to take up a five-year law course immediately after the completion of their HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) exams. Students who take up this option need to give a mandatory entrance test known as the CLAT. The CLAT (Combined Law Admission Test) is a comprehensive test that evaluates potential law students on their knowledge of English, current affairs, logical aptitude and knowledge of awareness of Indian law. After the completion of their LLB, individuals need to register with the

Yes, Australia does allow international students with a valid student visa to work while they are pursuing their higher studies. However the number of working hours per week have been restricted. The contrasting nature of our country from the historic museums to the religious temples to the beautiful waterfalls to the huge mountains and to top it all, its loving people shows the real India and the true Indian spirit. As a nation and as a citizen of the nation, there are several issues which have to be looked into, several faults which have to be rectified, several things which need to be changed to make the future of India better, bigger and brighter. A country follows a certain system of law and order which is its judicial system. India has some powerful laws and regulations created in various fields. But sadly these are not effectively applied and followed. That’s what leads to some of the major problems faced by our country. evidence to hang Kasab instantly? But our country spent crores and years before eventually hanging him. Also we need to uplift the position of women in our society, by giving them equal rights and equal freedom. The crime rates in our country are so high because no serious action is taken by our judiciary. If our judicial system becomes more effective and efficient then women will be able to live in a safer environment. Our political system - we do have educated political leaders, but there are very few who know their actual duties, very few who work for the betterment of the country. If they stop being corrupt and use our money and pay taxes in the right way, then no one can stop our country from reaching its highest economic point. Corruption is the root of a lot of problems like recession, unemployment, fiscal deficit, etc. If our political leaders start framing the required policies, start passing the right projects in time then there will be few problems of illiteracy and poverty.

We, the citizens of India should become more aware about our responsibility towards the country, like for example stop bribing the police and littering, then India will definitely be able to relive its glorious past. If the major problems are looked upon then smaller issues of environment degradation, infrastructural problems, etc will be solved. Inspite of the problems faced by our country we still stand strong and fight out everything with great pride and courage. And that’s why I’m proud to be a part of this country, I’m proud to be Indian.

T

oday's music accessories are all about convenience and clarity. Soundlogic's Mtv Fashiontronix Bluetooth speakers – Twister and Soundbox – are the latest addition to the lot, with their eye-catching design and features.

The Twister and the Soundbox are described as Bluetooth speakers that connect seamlessly to iPhones, iPods, mp3 devices, Android phones, Blackberry phones, other smart phones, tablets and computers. Both are made of silicone and have built in USB rechargeable batteries. Between the two, however, the Twister has been tagged as being 'splash proof'. Both connect easily to the device being used – in this case, an iPod (4th Gen). The instruction manual contains no technical terminology that will confuse the less tech-savy and will leave you quite satisfied after having synced your device. While design and being feature-packed work well for both, music lovers that insist on perfect sound quality can give both these a miss. Music on the Soundbox is muffled and is jarring even when the volume isn't turned up. The Twister is slightly better, but not enough to be considered clear. The price tag of Rs.2,999 for the Twister and Rs.3,999 for the Soundbox makes these two good purchases only if you're on a budget, and are more feature and design conscious, than concerned with clarity.

Education plays a vital role in project management

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2014

Adesh Jain, Honorary National President of Project Management Associates (PMA), writes on how reducing uncertainties is the key to making successful projects and how important it is to make it a branch of education

I

ndia as a young country is teeming with ideas and enthusiasm. Ever since we opened our economy in 1991, entrepreneurs have thrived and new avenues have emerged. However, what has failed to change is our approach to handling projects. Be it the public sector or the private sector, there are abundant stories of projects that started with much promise but have fizzled out due to poor planning, inability to foresee and minimise uncertainties, and poor implementation. Analysts today are increasingly coming to the conclusion that we as a nation lack a 'project mindset' and this is a lacunae that is slowing our success. While a lot of countries, most prominently China, have realised the need for trained and qualified project professionals, India is yet to wake up to this need. So, while we churn out thousands of management graduates every year, we do not produce enough people professionally equipped to handle projects. Let’s begin by deliberating on the question: how handling projects is an expertise that needs separate qualification and competency. Whatever we are doing today is for tomorrow, whether it is manufacturing, or service or infrastructure. Now, when we are working for tomorrow, the entire paradigm shifts to predicting how things will turn out in the future and how we plan to handle them. When we talk of the future, we have to take uncertainties into account because howsoever well we plan,

future is always uncertain. Risk and uncertainties are linked; if there is a certainty, there is no risk. We know that two plus two is four and there is no risk involved in this – but if two plus two turns out to be something else that we don’t know, this poses risk. So, risk and uncertainties are intertwined and they have to be seen from that perspective. Therefore, when we start doing something, the uncertainty is very high and when we wrap up a project by completing hundred activities, the uncertainty at completion is almost zero as you have finished. How fast you are able to reduce your uncertainties is the challenge. The faster you reduce them, the earlier you will make it zero (uncertainties) and time will be saved. If you manage to reduce the uncertainties slowly, time taken to make it to zero will be high. So, the rate of reduction of uncertainties is the crux of project management, however small to big and accelerating it is the key to project success. Let’s say we have an infrastructure project for which a series of steps have to be initiated starting from getting environment clearance, land acquisition, tender process, and construction, the planner needs to understand that each one of these is a complicated process that can take time that needs to be accounted for in the planning stage itself. If consensus takes time in a democracy, that time has to be accounted for in the planning stage. The people involved are stakeholders, their conditions too will have to be considered.

Club Enerji’s ‘Energy Q & Carnival 2014’ winners announced C

lub Enerji, Tata Power’s nationwide energy conservation programme recently announced the champions of the National Energy Q 2014 in the grand finale organised at Community Centre, Tata Colony, Chembur. Energy Q and Carnival are the annual features that enable the Club to propagate the message of energy and resource conservation in a fun and more engaging manner. It is the culmination of the entire year’s sensitisation programme. Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power graced the quiz competition and felicitated the winners of Energy Q 2014. A total of 200 schools participated during the preliminary round in the respective cities. Post city finals, 36 teams participated in the quarter final round and 12 teams in the semifinals. The final day of the competition included the all-day ‘Energy and Natural Resources Carnival’ which showcased intriguing projects by the school students on the themes of water management, energy conservation, fuel conservation, and environment protection. Students presented working models which can be prototypes of newer and more sustainable technology and enthralled the audience with their talented performances which carried messages of conservation, gender equality and healthy lifestyle. Principals, parents, energy mentors and

students shared their experiences of Club Enerji. The audience was educated on the emergence of Club Enerji and the path it has followed through a special film called ‘Journey So Far’. The event was rounded off with the final peg of the National Quiz Championship. After an intense competition between the schools, Cambridge Foundation School from Delhi emerged as the winners of the quiz held on January 10. Tata Power’s ‘Energy Conservation Programme’ introduced in more than 400 schools in the city, aims at creating maximum impact by educating and creating awareness amongst people on the effective management and conservation of energy in our everyday life. Club Enerji also encourages students to form their own mini-clubs in their schools and societies to reach out to more citizens. The Club members have collectively saved 8.7 million units of electricity and sensitized more than 5.2 million (52 lakh) citizens across the nation. This saving is equivalent to saving 8,700 tonnes of CO2 and is enough to light up approximately 4,090 houses for a year. Tata Power has added a feather to its cap by organising Energy-Q championship to honour the young minds on their Energy Quotient.

detailed planning and little attention to minimising uncertainties, resulting in tremendous cost overruns and repeated failures in meeting deadlines. In today’s scenario of an unprecedented rate of change, managing uncertainties proactively is crucial for project success. Minimising uncertainties before there is a crisis is the most significant aspect for a project to be successful. We should be realistic in estimating our time and cost elements. There is always a danger of 'conspiracy' of optimism which is not desirable. We must plan wholly and then implement parts. Preparation helps you avoid firefighting. Firefighting is anti-project management, antiplanning. Minimising firefighting is also a key part of project handling. Coming to the crucial question of the role of education in managing uncertainties, Indians largely have failed to recognise the fact that project management that involves crucial tasks of minimising uncertainties and predicting the future needs qualifications, certifications and experience. While anybody can do a project, not everybody can make a successful project manager who would plan with precision and implement with perfection. Project management is a professional job and managing uncertainties needs a qualified project manager too. In fact you can say, ‘project management is uncertainty management, or risk management’. Competency is very crucial for a successful project manager. In India Project Management Pic for representational purposes only Associates (PMA), provides certifications and unusually heavy monsoon too should have been competency skills for project managers based on At what rate do I get the minimum price, so that beforehand. The best college-going businessman

“I love the whole idea of getting paid to party,” says Yash Chandiramani, Co Founder and Partner, White Knight Entertainment and Hospitality am in the second year of BMS in Jai Hind College and I am yet to graduate. I was always drawn towards the glamorous life, loved the idea of late night parties, VIP nightclubs, limited entries and great music. That is why I started promoting nightclubs while I was in junior college, as a pure hobby, but I took keen interest and eventually realised that this could be scaled up thus encouraging me to start White Knight Entertainment. I love the idea of getting paid to party, to have no restrictions in the most exclusive night spots of the city and the popularity it brought me. However, most importantly I love being at my creative best. I can plan and design everything, from what the theme will be, to what people will wear to the placements inside the club and when it comes to my own Lounge I can decide the menu with the wackiest recipes. I can keep doing what I love the most which is making people have the time of their life. I am also a trained DJ and a music lover so it is an added advantage for me. I was originally in an engineering college, studying electronics and telecommunications. After two years of trying to figure out circuits, I realised that this is not what I want to do. So I started White Knight. A lot of people said I should complete my engineering since it does not matter what field you

get into as long as you have a strong degree. However, I believed that if I want to do business I should educate myself in that field. It did not make sense studying something totally unrelated just because it has a high value in society. Thus against a lot of wishes I switched over to BMS and joined Jai Hind College even though it meant I had to restart from the first year and would always be two years behind my batch-mates. After two years I can feel the difference, in the way I look at my business, the way I conduct it, the information I get from my college course and research work etc. I won the best college going businessman pan India, last year. The only training I received was when I promoted clubs under Nikhil Rochlani who happens to be my partner in White Knight now. He was the guy who taught me the tricks of the trade. Since the company belongs to both of us, we have to look over everything, but we have divided it in such a way that creations, business development and HR is take care of by me and accounting, back office and the entire finance is looked after by him. We do not have fixed hours of work and my work is mainly after 10 pm. I guess that is why I sleep through most of my college lectures. I made a total investment of approximately

« PEER SPEAK

Rs.30,000. I put in my share of Rs.15,000 by saving pocket money since I was 18. So for almost two months I made sure that all my friends including my girlfriend paid for me wherever we went and the last Rs.2,000 I borrowed from my mother. In this line one can earn Rs.7,000 to 8,000 as a fresher but if he/she grows in the right direction the field is certainly very lucrative. For a business person like me, I would say it takes about two years to become a professional and to bring about that professionalism in your work, in terms of legalities, scale of fee charged and organisational structure.

In business there is no guarantee that you will earn a particular sum of money; especially in this line where competition is high. In my nightclub promotion division, an established company can make Rs.2 to 3 lakh a month and in the hospitality management (clubs owned in partnership) around Rs.8 lakh a month can be made depending on the size of the venture. The first advantage of my field is that the majority of work can be carried out from your home, as long as you have the internet it does not matter where you are. Every day I get more than what I had yesterday. Late nights can however be a problem, especially when you have a 7 am lecture the next day. Secondly, in my promotions business getting a contract is one thing, but getting paid for it is another task. It is very easy to get exploited. There are a couple of things you must keep in mind if you want to start your own business. Firstly have realistic expectations, do not expect too much revenue at the start. Every business is started with a lot of enthusiasm; but that does not mean it will start generating income instantly. Secondly, do not fear failure. Failure teaches you a lot. The most important aspect is your passion for the business that causes you to defy everything and every single factor that goes against you. I personally feel in the end if the business idea is even average, the entrepreneur can make it a success if he has the passion and enthusiasm. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

well as other member bodies of IPMA are of different levels. Beginning with level D, the certifications offer increasing levels of competency skills right up to level A which qualifies certified Project Directors. In India, while we have a good number of certified project professionals i.e level A qualified professionals, not many of them graduate to the higher skill breaker, which is disappointing. It is estimated that we have 50,000 certified project professionals in India, most of whom have been certified based on passing an exam. This is a good first step but they need to move up the ladder. Having an exam based certification must get transformed to competence assessment in managing projects. Here India lags dismally from global benchmark leading to problems and issues. We just have 114 Certified Project Managers (IPMA Level C), 17 Certified Senior Project Managers (IPMA Level B) and 12 Certified Project Directors (IPMA Level A). India has the potential of becoming a force to reckon with. If we provide competency development to our hard working and brilliant project professionals they will do wonders. According to an estimate, for India to become a success story that can nurture superpower dreams by 2022 we need at least 200 Certified Projects Directors (IPMA Level A), at least 2,000 Certified Senior Project Managers (IPMA Level B) and at least 20,000 Certified Project Managers (IPMA Level C). Given limited resources, and with costs, time, scope and quality being ever-changing realities in an era of globalisation and e-technology, a management degree is not enough to helm projects. We need specialised skills. Behavioral and contextual sills are essential to lead and motivate team members. Here the role of qualification and education in project management becomes important.

Master of Ceremonies and event manager, Cheryline Fernandes tells Naressa Coutinho how she quit her decade long service at a reputed firm to focus on her love for hosting events, parties and weddings. She has never looked back since and wants more youngsters to join the partying brigade.

that. This would ultimately determine the amount of loyal clientele that you can boast of and would then have a direct impact on your income; one that Cheryline says is impressive and directly proportional to your act as an anchor. “Your earning depends on how good you are at your work,” explains Cheryline, “Female compères are generally paid much more than their male counterparts as they have the ‘gift of the glam’ on their side. However, emcees in general may earn anywhere between Rs. 5, 000-Rs 12,000 per event or can even demand Rs. 15000-Rs. 30000 for a day’s event, if he/she is experienced. The more experience and creative you get, the more you can earn. Corporate and stately events are more lucrative and fetch an higher fee.” For Cheryline, there is no looking back. She loves being a compère and dwells on the highpoints of this career. “You are your own boss. You get to travel – all expenses paid. Meeting people from various backgrounds is always refreshing and your talent receives instant appreciation and feedback from attendees. The best part about being an event anchor is your limitless growth prospects and income earned.” On the downside, the seasonal nature of festivities may lead to a dull spell during the monsoons and the bustling season may often take a toll on

« OFFBEAT CAREER

“A

happy marriage is a matter of giving and receiving,” said the compère, “Where the husband gives and the wife receives,” he smiles, sending everyone into a fit of laughter, including the blushing bride. He then guides the bridal couple, the bridesmaids and the wedding platoon through the customary and non-customary parts; juggling in his stride the catering, the playlist and priceless moments in pictures; and finally bidding a humble adieu to another successful night.

Be the Master of Ceremonies “A compere, also known as the Master of Ceremonies (emcee), is the one person who can make or break your event. From the minute an event commences till it ends, he/she handles and manages it all,” says Cheryline Fernandes, a popular emcee from Malad, Mumbai. Initially, Cheryline and her husband, Justin, would hire emcees and compères to host events under the name of JC’z – their own event enterprise. However, when she realized that she could <<Cheryline easily manage events on her Fernandes own and play a good host, she left her decade long service with a reputed firm and focused her energy on JC’z. An emcee is responsible for the smooth flowing of any formal event, performance or show – all the while engaging the audience, entertaining guests, and being the life of the party. The idea of an emcee first originated in the Catholic Church where one person was required to ensure that all the sacred rituals and liturgies were conducted in reverence and in keeping with the papal guidelines. Over time, a master of ceremonies moved into the realm of public and private events that opened the gateway to a wider professional field. If you think Catholic weddings are the only set ups requiring compères, then think again!

earl Academy, an institute for design, fashion and business, a globally renowned institution of higher learning offers dynamic & innovative courses that are especially designed in consultation with industry experts to maximize entrepreneurship and employability. After the graduation of their batch of 2013, the prestigious Academy has started its admission process for the year 2014. Students can choose from a range of Undergraduate courses (for duration of 4 years) and Post-graduate courses (for duration of 1 year

Lauren Sánchez of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ or Bollywood’s legendary actor-turned host Amitabh Bacchan are both examples of successful emcees in the wider space. However, speaking of weddings and silver weddings, social gatherings, parties, sporting events and even corporate events, you know the playing field is large. As Cheryline says, “In this career, the sky is the limit. There are no boundaries to your growth. You are a one-man show. If you give it your best and are good at what you do then you can reach great heights in a short span of time.” While you wouldn’t require any specific educational qualification or certificate course to become a Master of Ceremonies, Cheryline does encourage aspiring emcees to add on to their skills saying, “You need to be extremely fluent in English and have a good vocabulary. The more languages you know, the better it is for you to grow in your career. Moreover, there are many voice and speech modulation courses that one can join to excel as a compère.” Hence, all you need is a charismatic personality and an ability to connect with guests and audiences. Unlike most offbeat careers, where a certain amount of initial financial investment is required, as a compère this amount is almost negligible. However, it requires you to make many public appearances and hence presentation becomes imperative. Cheryline advices you to invest in some good clothing and make a great first impression and a lasting one at

your vocal chords and health. On a parting note, Cheryline says, “Firstly, Think – Decide – Be sure of what you want to do. If you are a person who loves to meet people, travel, and has enthusiasm, energy and charisma, then this could be the right career option for you. The best thing about this job is that even after an event, you are never left tired but are always thirsting for more. Therefore, instead of being employed, be an entrepreneur – Be your own boss. I personally believe there is no better job than spreading happiness and excitement around you.” Here is your chance to host the next best party in town. Good Luck! Tips to being a good Compère Firstly, you need to enjoy and be excited about what you do. You need to be energetic and charismatic at every event, only then will the people around you enjoy and have a great time. Appearance – The first impression is always the last impression, so always dress well for your client meets and especially for the actual event. Always be alert to what’s happening around you. Pre-plan your event and always be well prepared. Time Management – Always ensure you are on time for your event and manage your event within the set timeframe.

The three Alchemists in life MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2014

There are three alchemists in life – God, our parents and teachers. They guide you and bring out the best in you. A young student shares her insights into the same. LIBERAL EDUCATION

Yes I definitely think there is the need for liberal education, because in India we have an education system which has been rendered obsolete. Also, I think teachers are not good enough and updated knowledge, and a change in the way of teaching has to be implemented. It will help students understand situations better in real life scenarios, besides making choices apart from merely learning stuff. —Niyati, UPG College

I think it’s fine if there is no liberal education in schools, but in college it would really be helpful, not to say necessary. In college, we are learning in order to get a job; we need practical education beyond the theory aspect. There is not point in just giving exams if we do not learn how to enter the practical and professional world. There is a need of interaction between students and teachers. They should bring us knowledge and their experiences in life. We need to ask them more questions related to the courses, to life and our future job. —Aman Agarwal, Sydenham College

Yes, I do feel there is a need for liberal education, the Indian education system is more about learning things from books and writing them down even if it is not understood well. Rather new methods of interactive teaching should be introduced, leading to active participation of students. Learning through PowerPoint presentations, involving students in these presentations help in understanding the subject in a much better way than just holding a text book in hand and repeating what's written in it. Also every subject explained should be followed with an example because examples are better remembered. Emphasis should be laid on speaking as well as writing, because ultimately in life, people judge one by the way he/she talks. Personal attention to each and every student should be given. General knowledge sessions or charts should be put up in schools and colleges and imparting of practical knowledge should also be promoted. —Akshay Chandan, H R College

I

shine like gold!! Nowadays I see that children in a general don’t have the same drive or ambition as the previous generations. They don’t know how to set goals, or if they do, they are dissuaded by peer pressure. For this reason, it is very important that teachers and parents instill in children self confidence, ambition, concentration and raise us in an environment of love, respect and knowledge. What am I but a product of my parents? It is thanks to them that I am what I am today. They have confidence in me and give me the freedom to make my own decisions, and it is because of them that I am my own person-unique and independent. One shining example of how parents can change their children’s life is that of Liu Yiting, a Chinese schoolgirl studying in Harvard with a full scholarship. Her parents Zhiang Xinwu and Liu Weihva, started their daughters education when she was fifteen days old. Regular meal-

times were enforced. By age 3, she was doing household chores, and was assigned character building tasks such as long distance swims and holding an ice cube in her hand till her hand turned purple!! As for Liu, she is grateful to her parents, and she can be quoted saying “My parents gave me ability to create my own life and be happy and I am pretty goal oriented because of them.” We spend most of our time in our home environment but a major part of our day is spent at college. Often, we don’t realize the power a teacher has on us, and sometimes a teacher herself doesn’t realize the effect she has on children. For many years, my ambition was to become a teacher, thanks to my awe inspiring teachers.

On Teachers Day, this year, I realized the effort our teachers put in for us. The strain of talking day in and day out and of walking to various classes day long was immense. Lastly, our God, have you ever realized that a simple prayer before an exam or an event calms your nerves and encourages you. We may not see Him, but knowingly or not, we all believe in Him. For everything he takes away, He gives us more. We can thank Him for everything we haveour parents, a home, teachers, friends, and our safety. These are our alchemists; they convert the base metal we are born as, into gold. Whatever field you may choose to excel in, please know that these three will always be by your side.

This week, we asked students what they feel about liberal education. Liberal education is a different way of teaching and learning, which includes updated knowledge, help provided to students to understand concepts and not just to learn by heart, and promoting interactive learning between students and teachers. We asked them how liberal education could be a beneficial tool of learning

EW DELHI: With its on-going nation-wide membership drive, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday claimed over 10 lakh people joined the outfit in the last five days. The party also announced Adarsh Shastri, grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, and former IPS officer Uday Sahay have joined it, reports PTI. AAP had kick-started the membership drive campaign ‘Mein Bhi Aam Aadmi’ on January 10, with an aim of getting over 1 crore members by January 26. Senior party leader Gopal Rai, who is over-seeing the national membership drive, said over 6.6 lakh people joined the party by giving a missed call on a mobile number followed by 4.5 lakh who registered as members through its website. Over 1 lakh SMSes were sent to the (mobile) number and the rest of the people have joined the party by manually filing a form. “We have finished training of our volunteers. We will soon start over 300 district camps and hold membership camps. Our volunteers will do door-to-door campaigining for getting more people to join the party,” Rai said. With the party receiving complaints that many people were not able to join it because of the busy mobile network, it announced two more mobile numbers (08082807715/08082807715) on which people can either send SMSes or call to become members.

Notwithstanding persistent media queries about whether he backed the Gujarat Chief Minister as next prime minister, Salman, whose remarks have often set off controversies, refused to be drawn into a fresh one. “I belong to the film line. I can clearly answer questions on films. On politics, because of my limited knowledge I will not be able to give clear answers. If I begin answering your questions, I will get trapped,” Salman, apparently wiser with experience, said. “Modi Saheb should definitely get whatever is in his destiny, he must. Says Twin-deficits make India second most risky emerging market By A Business Reporter

G

lobal private equity major KKR has ranked India second among the emerging markets on external risks, citing the high fiscal and current account deficits. “Our emerging market framework takes the view of avoiding twindeficits countries at this point, the global fund said in its 2014 macro/asset allocation outlook. The country ended FY13 with an all-time high current account deficit of 4.8 per cent of GDP, which is slated to have improved significantly to 3.05 per cent in the first half of the current fiscal and may even be lower for full fiscal. On the fiscal deficit front, India may struggle to achieve the targeted 4.8 per cent level as the government has already exhausted 94 per cent of target by November, analysts said. South Africa tops the list of emerging market countries on the

basis of external risk rank, ahead of India, according to KKR. Indian policymakers have recently initiated aggressive steps to attract fund flows into the country. Even though India saw some improvement in the last quarter of 2013, the country spent a better part of the year worrying about the high CAD and its impact on the rupee, which hit a lifetime low of 68.85 against the dollar late August last. The US Fed’s taper talk late May 2013 only compounded the worries as FIIs pulled out massively. “We think countries with sizable or growing twin-deficits will continue to see their currencies and CDS (credit default swaps) under pressure in 2014 as Fed tapering gains momentum, KKR said. The Fed began to cut back on its USD 85 billion monthly bond purchase by USD 10 billion this month. KKR India is headed by Sanjay

Nayar and has over USD 1 billion invested in the country which includes stakes in Bharti Infratel, Coffee Day Resorts, Dalmia Cements and Magma Fincorp. In the note, the private equity fund with a reputation for buyouts, also commented on the rising prevalence of asset quality stress within the banking sector. “India must now deal more forcefully with deteriorating loan quality that has previously been listed as merely ‘restructured’, KKR said. According to the Reserve Bank data, stressed assets, including those classified as NPAs and restructured ones, touched 10.2 per cent as on September 2013 up from 9.2 per cent in March 2013. A slew of reasons, including the slowing growth, delays in getting necessary clearances for the large value infra projects and high interest rates are blamed for the problem.

New Gas Price Mechanism Positive For ONGC And Reliance, Says S&P By A Business Reporter

T

he Indian government’s decision to increase domestic gas prices is likely to benefit Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC) and Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), India’s two main gas producers.Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services expects the new gas pricing mechanism to improve the cash flows and profitability of both ONGC and RIL to varying degrees. We also believe that the price increase will support the companies’ high capital expenditure plans. However, the new pricing guideline does not affect our ratings on ONGC (BBB-/Negative/—) and

RIL (BBB+/Negative/—). The negative outlooks on the ratings reflect the negative outlook on the sovereign credit rating on India (unsolicited rating BBB-/Negative/A-3). We anticipate that the increase in gas prices will significantly improve ONGC’s EBITDA by about 20%, compared with 5%-7% for RIL. The impact on RIL’s profitability is not likely to be as significant given the company’s low gas production of about 13 million metric standard cubic meters per day. Our financial forecasts for RIL already considered the benefit of a potential price increase. We expect the price revision to help ONGC main-

tain its ratio of funds from operations to debt at more than 60% over the next two to three years. Our view is based on the understanding that state-owned ONGC will not be required to bear any additional subsidy burden from the fertilizer or power sectors, which are likely to be adversely affected by the price increase. The government’s announcement reduces uncertainty over future gas prices, in our opinion. But the uncertainty will continue for RIL, given a legal dispute over the government’s ability to increase the gas prices for some of the company’s gas blocks where production has significantly declined.

ndia’s growth rate is expected to slip to 4.9% in the current fiscal but will improve significantly to 5.6% in 2014-15, India Ratings said today. “Our expectation for improved growth in FY’15 is based on a partial recovery in the industrial and services sector growth, and an uptick in investment due to project clearances by the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI), said India Ratings, a Fitch group company. The economic outlook report projected growth of 5.6% with farm sector expansion at 3%, industry 4.1% and services 6.9% in 2014-15 fiscal. Outlook for the Indian economy is looking significantly better now than it did in mid-2013 when the country was struggling with current account and fiscal deficit, falling rupee and high and stubborn inflation, it said. “Better-than-expected monsoons, rising exports, swift policy as well as project clearance actions by the government and deft cur-

rency management by the RBI have improved business sentiments, the report said. It projected average WPI-based inflation to decline to 5.5% in FY’15, from 5.9% in 2013-14, which will lead to monetary easing. “We expect the pressure on food prices to ease in FY15 on the back of normal monsoons. With the expected moderation in inflation in FY’15, the agency expects RBI’s policy stance to gradually shift towards monetary easing. We expect a 0.50% reduction in repo rate in its base case, India Ratings said. It further projected that the fiscal deficit will narrow to 4.5% in FY’15 as the new government, post the general elections, will make efforts to adhere to fiscal consolidation. For 2013-14, it said the fiscal deficit will remain closer to the budgeted level of 4.8%. It said the restrictions on gold imports and stable oil prices would likely restrict import growth and restrict Current Account Deficit to 2.2% of GDP in FY’15.

Tata Steel Opens UK’s Largest Steel Plate Centre By Aditi Khanna

I

ndian giant Tata Steel opened the UK’s largest cutting center for steel plates at its West Midlands base yesterday. The steel giant’s new 3.1-million pound Profiling Centre at Steelpark in Wednesfield will increase its plate processing capacity in the region by up to 50 %. The facility offers steel plates cut and finished to exact size, shape and quality specifications, providing a range of benefits to customers in the lifting, excavating and construction sectors. The new centre has the capability to transform steel plate into a multitude of shaped and machined components, from high-volume production runs for off-road vehicle wheels and booms for earth-moving equipment, to large one-off

components for construction projects and specialist engineering applications. “We are transforming the UK’s largest steel service centre into an operation that is entirely focused on meeting customer requirements and supporting their success, said Paul Steele, managing director at Tata Steel Distribution UK and Ireland. “We have a unique ability to support our customers because of our Tata Steel ownership, which makes us the only steel distribution group to have both its mill and processing operations in the UK and Ireland, he said, adding this meant that Tata Steel not only knows “our products and services inside out, but we can offer customers consistent quality and repeatability.

Switzerland Ready To Discuss Tax Info Exchange With India By A Business Reporter

I

ntensifying efforts to address Indian concerns over alleged stashing of illicit funds in Swiss banks, Switzerland will send a delegation to India to discuss the “current situation and define measures for greater cooperation on tax matters. Switzerland has also agreed to an OECD global automatic exchange of tax information framework, which would further enhance its information exchange mechanism with India after becoming operational, a Swiss government official said. There have been concerns in India about limited flow of tax information from Switzerland about Indian citizens who have allegedly stashed away unaccounted money

in Swiss banks. Despite efforts by the Alpine nation to shed its banking secrecy tag, Switzerland is still perceived in some quarters to be a safe haven and to be reluctant in sharing information. Seeking to dispel such perceptions, Switzerland’s Federal Department of Finance said that it has intensified its efforts in the field of information exchange to explain Swiss laws and practice to the Indian authorities in a transparent way. “For doing so, a Swiss delegation is prepared to travel to New Delhi to discuss the current situation and, if need be, define measures for enhancing the collaboration in tax matters, a Swiss Federal Department of Finance spokesperson told PTI from Bern in reply to emailed queries.

SHARAPOVA BATTLES INTO SECOND ROUND M SPORTS

ELBOURNE: Third seed Maria Sharapova clawed her way into the Australian Open second round Tuesday with a straight-sets win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands as she seeks her first Grand Slam title since the 2012 French Open. The glamorous Russian, on the comeback trail from a shoulder injury that forced her off the tour in August, battled past the tough American 6-3, 6-4 but her game was marred by too many errors and a serve that failed to fire. "After (missing) my last Grand Slam in New York I have been so looking forward to this one and I was really happy to start," she said. "She was a tough opponent and I'm just happy to get through the first one. I have had trouble against her in the past and I knew it would be no different tonight." The four-time Grand Slam winner, in a powder blue dress, only made her return at the Brisbane International this month where she lost to bitter rival and eventual champion Serena Williams in the semi-finals. Sharapova, who was using an ice vest even at 11:00 pm after a scorching hot day, won't be relishing a possible final meeting with Williams, who has a 15-2 record in their career meetings. Now working with coach Sven Groeneveld after a failed, onetournament partnership with Jimmy Connors, Sharapova comfortably held her serve then scored an early break when Mattek-Sands pushed a forehand long. She was playing aggressive tennis and forcing errors from the American, which cost her dearly with the third seed racing to a 4-0

lead. But the colourful MattekSands, sporting purple dyed hair and her trademark knee socks, forced her way back into the game when Sharapova drove a forehand long to give her a glimmer of hope. She held serve to go 4-2 and nearly got back to 4-3 with the Russian struggling with her service game, but failed to make the most of her opportunities with Sharapova closing out an error-riddled set in 48 minutes. FEDERER, AZARENKA ADVANCE AS HEAT WAVE ARRIVES

Switzerland's Roger Federer plays a shot during his men's singles match against Australia's James Duckworth. Roger Federer kept his cool on a scorching second day, starting his record 57th consecutive Grand Slam tournament with a 6-4, 6-4, 62 victory in his first match with Stefan Edberg as a coach. Federer was the second match on Rod Laver Arena, and the tempera-

29

ture topped 41 Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) during his win over Australian wild-card entry James Duckworth. Two-time defending women's champion Victoria Azarenka played the previous match on the center court at Melbourne Park, and said it felt "pretty hot, like you're dancing in a frying pan or something like that." After her 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over No. 91-ranked Johanna Larsson of Sweden, Azarenka went back out to practice and said she planned an ice bath later as a recovery. Asked how he handled the heat, the 32-yearold Federer said: "I'm here. I'm speaking. Actually, it's not crazy. I'm feeling OK right now." He now owns the record for playing the most consecutive Grand Slam events, another milestone in a career that has already netted 17 major titles. He kept the points as short as possible, and only gave No. 133ranked Duckworth one look at a break point in the 1-hour, 46minute match. He said it was "great fun" to finally play in front of childhood hero Edberg, who he hired on a part-time basis last month. "I used to watch his matches and get inspired," Federer said, then added: "He warmed me up .... I won!" Conscious of the time and the temperature, former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki and No. 11 Simona Halep raced to straight-sets wins. Wozniacki said the court was so hot in her 6-0, 6-2 win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino, which started at 11 a.m., that it seemed to melt her plastic water bottle. In her first Grand Slam match since her New Year's Eve engagement to golfer Rory McIlroy, she did everything she could to keep cool. "Every time in the changeovers, ice bags, ice towels, everything; and then in the second set I could feel they were starting to heat up even more," Wozniacki said.

Fainting, vomiting as stars struggle in ‘inhumane’ heat Somdev crashes out of Aus Open

M

ELBOURNE: Players fainted and vomited and a ball boy collapsed as the Australian Open boiled in one of the hottest days in its history, prompting angry complaints and keeping fans away in droves. Temperatures of 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit), enough to melt plastic bottles on the rubberised courts, made for a punishing day for the players with some incensed their matches went ahead. Canada's Frank Dancevic lashed out at the "inhumane" playing conditions after he blacked out and needed treatment during his first-round defeat to Benoit Paire. "I think it's inhumane, I don't think it's fair to anybody, to the players, to the fans, to the sport, when you see players pulling out of matches, passing out," he said. "I've played five-set matches all my life and being out there for a set-anda-half and passing out with heat-stroke, it's not normal. "Having players with so many problems and complaining to the tournament that

Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina cools off with the help of ice pack during a break as he plays Rhyne Williams of the U.S. in their first round match at the Australian Open.

it's too hot to play, until somebody dies, they're just keep going on with it and putting matches on in this heat. I personally don't think it's fair and I know a lot of players don't think it's fair." Chinese player Peng Shuai cramped and vomited during her loss to Japan's Kurumi Nara, and also received a violation for time-wasting at a moment when she said she was unable to walk. "I was just cramping and I couldn't stand up. Both legs, my hamstrings were cramping," she said. "I had no energy, I couldn't run, I couldn't serve," she said, blaming the heat for her defeat. "So it's impossible to play tennis like this." There was no immediate response from tournament officials to the complaints. The Australian Open, held at the height of the Melbourne summer, is notorious for its heat. State officials imposed a blanket fire ban and warned of extreme temperatures in some areas on Tuesday.

M

ELBOURNE: India's campaign in the singles event came to an end after Somdev Devvarman went down to 26th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets in the opening round here. The unseeded Indian showed a lot of fighting spirit before going down 4-6 4-6 6-7 (2) to World No. 27 in a two-hour and 13 minutes men's singles contest here at the Melbourne Park. Lopez will now take on unseeded German Michael Berrer, who knocked out Michael Llodra of France 6-4 7-5 6-1. World number 97 Indian won a total of 89 points as compared to Lopez's 110. In the first set, Somdev got a great opportunity to make a mark as he got two break points, but the 28-year-old failed to convert even one. Lopez, on the other hand, used the lone break point he got to his advantage and easily sealed the set in his favour. In the second set, Somdev showed a lot of improvement as he managed to save two of the three break

points that Lopez had got, but he conceded one to go down yet again. Somdev, however, came out all guns blazing in the third set as he gave a tough competition. Both the players converted two break points each to push the match to the tie-breaker. But in the end, Lopez raised his game to beat the Indian comfortably. Somdev had lost in the second round of the men's singles in 2013.

UMBAI: Maharashtra got back on the winning track and kept alive their hopes to qualify for the women’s final of the UPL-9th Savio Cup All-India Basketball Tournament, organized by the Don Bosco Recreation Centre. They handed strong challengers Chhattisgarh a 77-66 defeat in the women’s league match, at the floodlit Don Bosco High School courts, Matunga on Tuesday evening. The Maharashtra girl’s, who had lost to Chhattisgarh by a solitary point (76-77) in the Federation Cup final last week, played aggressively, showed plenty of determination and managed to avenge that defeat. There was also a marked improvement in their shooting and anticipation as compared to their opening encounter against Kerala, which they had lost 71-81 a couple of days ago. Once again Maharashtra captain Manisha Dange led by example doing the bulk of scoring with 30 points. Playing supporting roles were Smruthi Radha (17 points) and Amrutha Bhuskute and Shireen Limaye, both chipping in with 10 points each. For the losers, Poonam Chaturvedi got 18 points, while Akansha Singh and Kavita scored 16 and 13 points respectively.

Centurions Rajan, Karan star in Thakur Shyamnarayan’s big win

M

UMBAI: An unbeaten century by Rajan Sharma (152 n.o.) and Karan Singh’s courageous 128 saw Thakur Shyamnarayan boys pile up a mammoth 357 for eight off the alloted 45 overs and then dismissed their rivals Sacred Heart for 98 to record a thumping 259 win in the prequarterfinals of the Khichadia-Khar Gymkhana suburban schools cricket tournament, now being held at various venues. After their batsmen made merry with their rivals attack, their bowlers Amit Pandey (5 for 43) and Sumit Dubey (5 for 24) skittled out Sacred Hear t. Swami Vivekanand schools at Borivali and Kandivali had a mixed day, while their Borivali boys thrashed Thakur Vidyamandir by nine wickets, their Kandivali counterparts were beaten by Parle Tilak by six wickets. Brief scores: Gundecha Int 90 (V. Sarawigi 5 for 18) lost to Jamnabhai Narsee 91 for 1 (Adit Mukerji n.o.36). Meanwhile, reigning men’s champs Sportspower, USA, crashed to a 68-102 defeat to a resurgent, Services in a Group-B round-robin league match. The heavily depleted USA team, without several of their players, who could not travel to India due to visa issues, lacked bench strength and were unable to raise the level of their game. As a result they went down rather tamely. However, full credit should be given to the armymen, who after their defeat to Punjab in their earlier match, were a transformed lot and played aggressively to outsmart their opponents in every department. Ram Gopal and N.K. Grewal contributed 24 and 23 points respectively for Services and Joginder Singh scored 19 points. For the American side, Jahaziel Howared was at his best with 29 points and Reed Baker scored 16.

USA and Services players are keenly involved in a struggle for supremacy during the Savio Cup Basketball tournament.

Results – Women’s league: Maharashtra 77 (Manisha Dange 30, Smurthi Radha 17, Shireen Limaye 10, Amrutha Bhuskute 10) beat Chhattisgarh 66 (Poonam Chaturvedi 18, Akansha Singh 16, Kavita 13). letics Championships apparently in line with Internationally Olympic Committee's decision to retest eight-year old samples, dating back to 2004 Athens Olympics in order to deter dope cheats. The 2005 Monaco World Athletics Finals (September 9-10), competed by top eight athletes of that time, was held a few weeks after the 2005 World Athletics Championships (August 6-14) in Helsinki, and hence Kotova's result in the latter event has now been deleted from the record books. The Athletics Federation of India is yet to receive the official communication from the IAAF though the world body's website has updated the results of the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monaco with Anju is now being listed as the gold medal winner with an effort of 6.75m. Gritty India face stern Australia test By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

EW DELHI: The moraleboosting draw against Olympic champions Germany has done a world of good to their confidence as hosts India face a Herculean task when they square off with World Champions Australia in the quarterfinals of the Hero Hockey World League Final, here today. After back-to-back defeats against higher-ranked England and New Zealand in their opening two Pool A games, a struggling India gave the home fans something to cheer about and dished out a spirited performance to hold world number one Germany to a 3-3 draw. If India's opening two outings were horrible in terms of performance, they came up with much-improved performance in their last pool match to hold the mighty Germans. Unlike their previous two games, the Indians looked far more organised and

Yuvraj Valmiki and Germany's Tobias Matania vie for the ball. co-ordinated in both attack and defence against Germany. Sardar and Co were a better side on display. Had it not been for a late defensive lapse from skipper

Sardar, India could have stunned Germany last night. The Indian midfield and the forward line combined well to create a number of opportunities, which were missing in the first two games against England and New Zealand. The defence, which is India's perennial problem, too lived upto the expectations to deny Germany any major inroads. And India would be hoping for a repeat performance, if not better, to give themselves a chance against the Kookaburras, coached by legendary Ric Charlesworth. But one thing which will continue to haunt India's chief coach Terry Walsh is the ordinary showing of his dragflickers. Insipite of having three specialist dragflickers in the team in VR Raghunath, Rupinderpal Singh and Amit Rohitdas, India have not been upto the mark with penalty corner conversions so far in the eight-nation event.
