In the petition to the SHRC, Somaiya and More said that since the girl has lost both her hands, she is losing her hope for life, and that no government authority is taking responsibility for the said accident. “The incident took place on January 11, 2014 around 1:45 pm resulting in Monika losing both her hands. The ambulance did not reach near by the station. No medical facilities were available at the station as prescribed in the rules and guide lines. ANYTHING FOR A GOOD SHOT

IF you thought that being a photographer or a photojournalist was some cushy job where you clicked as people posed for you, you need to get another angle on it. Life for lensmen is anything but that, and you will often find them scrambling for that good shot, maintaining focus and accuracy, even as they are being jostled and pushed around by the crowds, or by the cops. Sometimes, there is no go but to climb right to the top of the scaffolding, or straddle the fence work, precariously balanced so that they can get some really good pictures for you readers. This happens to be our tribute, clicking them as they attempted to do their best on Makar Sankranti day at the Juhu Beach.

WITH a heritage of 100 years, Indian cinema may soon get its place of pride in the city as the National Museum of Indian Cinema opens next month in the 6,000 square-foot Gulshan Mahal – a heritage building on Pedder Road in South Mumbai. Gulshan Mahal's interiors have been refurbished to house an interactive walk-through down cinema's memory lane and is part of a larger complex of 50,000 sq. ft that will come up in phases. The museum promises to be a ready-reckoner of the history of Indian cinema, showcasing technological aspects of production and screening of films, as well as its social aspects during the past 100 years. Through its interactive galleries, it will trace the evolution of celluloid from the Lumiere Brothers, Raja Harishchandra onwards, and showcase Indian cinema in three stages – the silent era, the golden era and the modern era. It will also portray the footsteps taken by Indian cinema, from the period of silent films to the studio period, and then recreate the times when stars and mega stars dominated the silver screen. An Advisory Committee, headed by renowned filmmaker

world-class production and exceptional pyrotechnics and lasers, the stage will also have dancers and acrobats on trampolines to create an unbelievable blend of theatre and dance music. The Sunburn Arena will also be bringing the voice behind the Grammy-nominated single 'This is what it feels like', Trevor Guthrie, to accompany Armin onstage. The lineup also includes famed vocalists like Richard Bedford, Cindy Alma, Fiora Cutler, Laura Evans and many more. What say music lovers? Chalke dekhe?

fter the agitation against toll collection in Kolhapur took a violent turn on Sunday, corporators from Navi Mumbai, during the Standing Committee meeting held yesterday in Belapur, demanded that the toll nakas at Vashi and Airoli stop collecting toll from residents of Navi Mumbai. The issue was raised by NCP Corporator Shivram Patil who said, “A number of Navi Mumbaikars travel across the Vashi creek, passing through the toll naka everyday, and are made to pay toll. Why are residents of Navi Mumbai asked to pay the amount although they are living in the satellite city? It should be free for them.” Patil's party colleague Raju Shinde demanded, “Not only Vashi, but also Airoli Toll Plaza should stop collecting toll from Navi Mumbaikars. In Panvel, vehicles with number plates beginning with MH 46 are not made to pay toll. Then why is Navi Mumbai not toll free?” Another NCP corporator, M.K.

Madhavi pointed out, “In most areas of Lonavala, people residing 8-10 km away from the toll plaza are not charged. Then why are we collecting toll from Navi Mumbaikars?”. Madhavi, while highlighted the history of the Airoli Toll plaza, said, “Earlier, the Airoli toll plaza was free for citizens who had a letter from the local corporator which stated that the citizen is a resident of Navi Mumbai and asked the authorities to let him pass without collecting a toll. There were some corporators however, who were making money by charging Rs. 500 for each letter. When this topic was brought up by Infrastructure Developers, the Airoli Toll Plaza was directed to cancel the free pass issued to vehicle owners.” NMMC commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad assured the corporators by saying, “The issue will be discussed by the higher authorities of the NMMC and then taken to the corridors of the state government for a final decision on whether residents of Navi Mumbai should not be made to pay toll”. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Many of the 225 roads, have had at least one or more lane stretches completed. The first one takes time because of ducting and co-ordination with 16 agencies of various utilities. It surely is a certain amount of inconvenience at the moment for traffic, but by the monsoons, a considerable amount will be ready, and by the year end, all the work will be complete.” The latest plan for the relaying of roads, ratified by IIT Bombay, will cost Rs. 120 crore. The entire 4.3 km long Marine Drive will now be concretised. According to the authorities, this will ensure that the road lasts for a longer period of time. Thackeray further posted, “To highlight some facts again, Mumbai has approximately 1900 km of roads. Of these, approx 1300 km are under the BMC.Of the 1300 km, 568 km are already concrete, while another 100 km will be done this year. The Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, service roads, flyovers, roads under skywalks and metros are not under the BMC authority. They come under the MMRDA (an unelected body, headed by the CM, not answerable to the public), MSRDC and PWD all State Govt bodies.”

wo robbers hailing from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh have been arrested by Bandra police for stealing a businessman's abandoned car from Bandra, trapping them with the help of Apple Tab locked inside. The car, an Innova was stolen from outside Lotus Club Hotel on January 10 and was found on January 12. There was an Apple Tab lying inside the car, which was tracked using the Mac Tracking technology. The two accused have been identified as Umesh Jaiswal and Krishna Singh. Umesh, 25, is a driver by profession and Krishna, 25 is a driver who doubles up as a watchman. Both have past records of criminal offences against them. On the morning of Saturday, January 11, Siraj Nagan, 38 an exporter based on Perry Cross Road, lodged a complaint

ing to the prosecution, Sajid was present at the control room set-up in Pakistan during the 26/11 strikes. Police are pressing charges against Jundal on 22 counts including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the nation, murder, kidnapping for murder, cheating, and forgery, under the Indian Penal Code. Besides, there are charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Act, Explosive Substance Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Railways Act and Cus-

toms Act. Jundal, a native of the Beed district of Maharashtra, was arrested by the Delhi Police after his deportation from Saudi Arabia in June 2012. According to Jundal’s confession, LeT training camps in Pakistan enjoyed full support from local and federal police, as well as paramilitary organisations there. Jundal was originally wanted in the 2006 Aurangabad arms hauls case, the 2010 German Bakery blast case in Pune and the Nashik police academy attack conspiracy case.

TECHNO ARREST

Two car robbers held via Apple Tab inside stolen vehicle about his missing Innova, and informed the police about the Apple Tab kept inside the car which had a tracking system activated. The police then started the tracing peocedure. “After the complaint was registered we started tracking the device in the car from another Apple device,” said API A. Pawar. The tracking process started at 8 am and the device got finally traced at around 2 pm. API Nand Kumar Gaikwad said, “After starting the process it was found that the device was in Jalgaon District. leuths of the Virar police have arrested two fraudsters for allegedly duping investors to the tune of several lakhs of rupees by operating a fake money-spinning scheme. Identified as Naryan Mandwe and Datta Mane, the accused floated a Bumper Saving Scheme at a rented office in the Manvelpada area of Virar and as-

revealed about the incident to anyone. Apparently depressed by the incident, Mahesh committed suicide by consuming poison the following day. After a complaint registered by the tribal women, the Vangaon police registered a case under section 376 ( Rape), 306 (Abetting Suicide),

506 (Criminal Intimidation ), 504 and under the relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, against the accused, who is still at large. Assistant Police Inspector Ramrao Mahamunkar is investigating the case.4

Rs.33 lakh fraud in Virar Promised gullible investors very high returns in ‘Bumper Saving Scheme’ sured high returns on investments to gullible investors. The arrest followed after a complaint was registered by Hemant Sitaram Vaade, who was duped of Rs 10 lakh by the fuaudsters

under the pretext of high monthly returns. While the duo have been arrested and booked under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, their accomplice, identified as Dinesh Rahul, is said to be ab-

sconding. So far a financial fraud of Rs. 33 lakh committed by the trio has been exposed, police said. Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Jogdand is carrying out further investigations.

he Hong Kong-based direct selling company QNet has stated that its operations across the globe, including in India, are perfectly within the parameters of law, and any allegations of scam are entirely baseless. “As a business interested in sustainability, we respect the laws of the land in any country that we operate in and ensure compliance accordingly. Wherever necessary, we even adjust our business model to suit local requirements. India is one such place where we conducted our due diligence and made the necessary adjustments so that our business model does not violate any legal provisions,” said Zaheer Merchant, Director of Corporate Affairs from QNet’s international headquarters in Hong Kong, dismissing allegations of conducting an illegal business in India. “QNet has no shell companies in India as has been alleged. We operate through a fully Indian company that has the franchisee rights to the QNet brand,” he clarified. He further added, “QNet is an international direct selling company with a proud Asian heritage that was established in 1998. Today it has more than 60 lakh distributors and customers around the world with product sales in 100+ countries, 25 worldwide offices and agencies and more than 50 stockists. In India, QNET through its franchisee Vihaan, has approximately 50,000 distributors and customers. QNet's grass-roots business model enables ordinary people from all walks of life to start their own business with minimal overhead. With hard work and dedication, QNet distributors, known as Independent Representatives (IRs), have the opportunity to become economically self-sufficient, raising the standard of life for their families and communities. Internationally, direct selling is a popular business model that has generated more than USD 160 billion in revenues in 2012. With no clear legislation in India to govern this industry, we are constantly getting lumped under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Act. The Act bans all illegal money circulation schemes. It does not regulate the direct selling or MLM industry in any way,” he said. Referring to the ongoing case against it, Merchant said, “This situation appears to be some form of orchestrated sustained attack on the company to undermine our reputation and prevent us from competing fairly and openly in India. The manner in which an alleged unmerited claim of fraud, which it-

07

self has not and cannot be substantiated, has been used to arrest IRs and freeze assets and simply does not bear up to scrutiny. We are confident that as true facts emerge authorities will also see this clearly – as a calculated attack on QNet and take appropriate action against those responsible for scheming this at the first place. First of all, the complaint involving one Gurupreet Singh Anand was officially closed on May 18, 2013. The complainant Gurupreet’s wife Parmeet Kaur withdrew the complaint vide a letter dated May 18, 2013 and submitted a letter to the Police Sub-Inspector of Oshiwara Police Station (in Northwest Mumbai) giving an undertaking in writing that the matter has been resolved. Strangely, Gurpreet Singh Anand filed the same complaint, three months after the case has been closed, and the complaint withdrawn, in the same police station. In an even stranger development, this matter, a consumer complaint involving an alleged transaction of Rs. 30,000, was transferred to the Mumbai EOW! There are so many misrepresentations about this entire case. Gurupreet Singh claims his wife bought a biodisc, where as our records show that she ordered an e-learning course, for which no money ever was paid to the company. The cheque was stopped before it could be realized and hence the transaction was nullified. All these allegations of QNet having sold his wife a ‘cancer-curing’ product are completely false. We fail to understand how Gurupreet brandishes a Biodisc on TV that he claims was bought by his wife!”. He described as yet another gross misrepresentation, the reference to the case as a “Rs. 425 crore scam”. “QNet’s Indian franchisee, Vihaan is clearly registered with the RoC, as a direct selling/MLM/network marketing company that will promote its business in India through a network of Independent Representatives (IRs). The company has been paying all its taxes and complying with all the regulations of the government of India. In fact, all commissions payable to the IRs for product sales are paid only after TDS. All documentation has been provided to the investigators and the management of Vihaan are fully cooperating with them in this investigation. So where does the question of a ‘scam’ arise? It is unfortunate that the dispute involving Rs. 30,000 in a nullified deal has been painted as a Rs. 425 crore scam and we sincerely hope that all concerned will appreciate this factual position. Truth shall prevail,” Merchant clarified.

DECEIVING THE DEAD? Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ which she had received from the developer, Paulita had given Rs 2.2 crore to Jeevan Daata Trust (JDT), whose trustees were Allen Silva and Fatima Dias, as well as Fr. Conrad Saldanha. The latter, presently the priest at St. Pius Seminary in Goregaon, for more than one year now, has been running from pillar to post to register a case of cheating and defrauding against the two trustees of JDT and Joseph Dias, the founder of Catholic Secular Forum (CSF). According to the complainant, Joseph played a major role in the entire racket, for which he had kept his wife Fatima (Trustee of JDT) as a front, who later resigned from the trust. “After getting the amount from Sumer Builders, Joseph told Paulita to donate Rs 2.2 crore in JTD, as his wife was a trustee along with me and other people,â€? said Father Saldanha. “The money was supposed to be invested in a plot at Karjat and an old-age home was to be constructed by Sterling Constructions, whose promoter was Joe Silva, brother of Allen (one of the trustees of

JDT), added Fr Saldanha. However, even after three years the construction of the old-age home is yet to be started, informed Saldanha. Talking with the ADC, Allen confirmed that Rs 2.2 crore was paid to Sterling Constructions, and said, “The money was paid to the construction company, but as the costs for making an old-age home was more than Rs 4 crore, the entire project is yet to see the light of day. However, Allen emphasized that, “Sterling Constructions is ready to return the Rs 2.2 crore to the JDT and at present he is the only trustee of JDT left. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

In September 2010, Paulita D'souza received Rs 3.95 crore from Sumer Developers. In the same month, a day or two after receiving the amount from Sumer Developers, she issued two cheques totaling Rs 2.2 crore to the JDT. Immediately, the money was transferred to Sterling Constructions, as payment paid for the project of making an old-age home. In July 2012, Paulita died and significantly, the latter's burial certificate stated that the deceased was destitute.

A

fter a meeting with Senior NCP leader Ganesh Naik last September, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chauhan had directed officials of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to consider lowering the existing Local Body Tax (LBT) rates. The NMMC sent a proposal to the state government earlier this month, asking it to reduce the existing LBT for the city. Abasaheb Jarhad, Commissioner, Navi Mumbai confirmed that the proposal would be addressed soon,

but refused to divulge details. An NMMC official said, “In order to provide relief to citizens and traders, the NMMC has recommended that the LBT on major goods be reduced. Few changes in other sections have also been suggested by the civic body, but we will have to wait for the decision from Mantralaya.” According to civic body officials, the changes in the LBT have estimated a reduction in the corporation’s revenue receipt target by Rs. 125 crore. When there was no LBT earlier, the civic body would collect an annual cess of nearly Rs. 425 crore. The

LBT was later introduced leaving the civic body with an estimated revenue of nearly Rs. 825 crore. Keeping in mind the upcoming General and State Assembly Elections, political leaders in September last year, urged the ruling DF government to provide some relief to citizens and traders. The Congress-NCP ministers also demanded a reduction in the tax rates. Senior NCP leader Ganesh Naik infact, took a delegation of political leaders, civic officials and traders, to meet the Chief Minister.

AAP will be left panting, says NCP Kejriwal’s party has come to power using short-cut method: Jadhav By Prashant Hamine

“A

s the Lok Sabha elections draw closer, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be left panting”, remarked state NCP president Bhaskar Jadhav. Speaking to newspersons at the Rashtravadi Bhavan here yesterday, Jadhav said that the AAP had come to power in Delhi using the short-cut method. He added that the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had come to power using the same agitational method, and does not seem to be re-

membered now. Replying to queries over an alleged attack on the AAP office in Aurangabad by alleged NCP activists yesterday, he rubbished the claim, arguing that the incident was contrived and stating that there were doubts about whether the said office was indeed an AAP office. Jadhav stated that he has instructed his party cadres not to obstruct AAP workers in their activities to enroll members and carry out their party propaganda. Jadhav remarked that the AAP, before coming to power

in Delhi, had made a slew of poll promises like holding Janata Durbars, which they later wound up. He added that in politics, seasoned politicians have had to wait for decades to assume positions of power, and the AAP has tasted power in a very short time. Pointing to the AGP’s rise in Assam, he said that the AAP will meet the same fate. Replying to queries over the AAP’s move to contest against what it called tainted NCP minister’s, he said that the party will respond in a democratic way at the poll hustings.

N

oted dalit poet and Dalit Panther’s leader, Padma Shri Namdeo Dhasal (64), died after prolonged battle with multiple illnesses of colorectal cancer and myasthenia gravis (a rare auto-immune disorder) in the wee hours at Bombay Hospital. Born on February 15, 1949 in the slums of red light district of Mumbai, his contribution to dalit literature won him several national and international literature awards. Dhasal not only gave vent to the struggle of dalit human rights but also founded the Dalit Panthers which fought for the rights of the downtrodden. Having experienced the hardships of the Schedule Caste, Dhasal articulated it in his writings. His first composition of poems ‘Golpitha’ won him rave reviews and several national and international awards. The composition of poems was based on his own early life which was in abject poverty. Dhasal, gifted with fine vocabulary, was a writer, poet, novelist and dramatist par excellence. He spent his early youth driving a taxi on the streets of Mumbai. Influenced by the American Black Panther movement, Dhasal raised the Dalit Panthers which waged armed struggle in cases of atrocities against the Schedule Caste

people. Some of his noted literary works include poetry compositions like Golpitha, Idiot Old Man Moved The Mountain; dramas like Andhar Yatra; novel Negative Space and others. He was the only Dalit poet and Indian leader whose literary works have featured on the BBC. He was

awarded the Padmashri in 2004. The funeral will take place on Thursday and the funeral procession will start from Dr Ambedkar College, Wadala to Chaityabhoomi, Dadar. Several prominent people and politicians cutting across party lines paid rich tributes to the firebrand late Dalit Panthers leader.

Ponder awhile... “People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid.” — Soren Aabye Kierkegaard

Only Rahul Gandhi is fit for PM’s post in Congress T

omorrow when the AICC session will be held, an important decision will be taken by the Congress. It is most likely that Vice-President of the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, will be chosen as the party’s nominee for the Prime Minister’s post. Rahul Gandhi who has been silent for a long while will be entrusted with the campaign in the Lok Sabha poll. The party has no choice but to take the decision. The Congress will feel orphaned if the dynasty family does not take over. There is none in the Congress who is suitable for the PM’s post other than Rahul Gandhi. Considering Rahul’s record, it becomes clear he cannot win elections. He neither has charisma nor the capacity to organise and get mass support. He cannot undo the corruption taint the Congress has acquired. He has never been a crowd puller. A party that has gained overnight support of the people has expressed the view that Rahul can pose no challenge to it. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has declared the fight for national power will be between his party and the BJP. Kejriwal has declared that the Congress has no chance in the Lok Sabha poll. It looks like the BJP is going to win the majority of votes in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. Arvind Kejriwal’s party will also be nowhere. He thinks the situation in other states is no different from what it is in Delhi. In Delhi, there were no regional parties which in states are getting on very well. At the most Kejriwal may get a dozen seats across the country. The maximum seats he will get maybe in Delhi. Even in Delhi however, the anti-AAP mood may grow. Already, there are charges the AAP government’s law minister is involved in some corruption case. Not all the people in his party are clean and honest like him. Quite a few people in the party have their own perceptions and political agenda. One thing however appears to be certain: the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi will be fighting only a losing battle in Lok Sabha elections.

HE venerable Jayanthi Natarjan spent many hours on prime time last week denouncing Narendra Modi for speaking of a ‘Jayanthi tax’ allegedly imposed during her tenure as Minister of Environment. She gave interviews to famous TV anchors to make the case that it was because of her vigilance on environmental ‘violations’ in Gujarat that Modi was targeting her. She added that another reason was that she had been unafraid to attack Modi for snooping on that mysterious Gujarati lady who to this day has not complained. Ms Natarjan said she never lost a chance to charge Modi with ‘genocide’. So he was now taking revenge on her. When asked why she had been removed from her job and why the man who now has charge of it has cleared so many projects in such a short time she had no answer. Just as she could only say that the ‘Indian Express’ newspaper (for whom I write an exclusive weekly column) was ‘motivated’ in the stories it recently produced giving details of files found in her home when she ‘resigned’. Of these there were 180 that Madame had not signed and 169 that she had but that she had not yet cleared.

Functioning like the license raj The famous TV anchors asked her tough questions about this stash of files mysteriously gathering dust in her ministerial residence. But, it saddened me that none of them asked her why she had not come up with objective and measurable norms that would have made clearances so much easier and more transparent. Neither she nor her predecessor, Jairam Ramesh, chose to come up with norms that would have listed exactly what rules needed to be followed for a road, a dam or a port to be built. This meant that every major infrastructure project had to be decided individually and this meant that a country with some of the most decrepit infrastructure in the world was unable to renew it soon enough for India to start catching up with the rest of the world. This also meant that the Ministry of Environment began to function like the license raj used to do in those bad old times when our biggest industrialists were forced to wait days in the smelly corridors of Delhi’s ‘bhawans’ just to be granted a license that often decided whether their industries could continue to function or not. By the time the tenure of Jairam and Jayanthi ended more than Rs 10

lakh crore worth of projects were stuck because of environmental clearances not being given in time. And, often whisperers in the corridors of power would let it be known that there were ‘orders from the top’ that prevented these clearances from being given. Rumours that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were personally involved in the business of environmental clearances got confirmed when Rahul went to Odisha with Jairam Ramesh to close down the aluminium refinery in which the Vedanta group had already invested Rs

Rumours spread about ‘Jayanthi tax’

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh 11,000 crore. Had this refinery gone ahead with refining bauxite from the Niyamgiri Hills it is possible that one of India’s poorest states would today have become the aluminium production centre of the world. Reduced costs for transporting bauxite from its source to a refinery could have resulted in the international price of aluminium coming down by half and the Adivasi tribes of Koraput and Kalahandi may finally have had a chance to dream of prosperity. These simple, primitive people were encouraged by NGOs of dubious repute to insist that the Niyamgiri Hills could not be mined for bauxite because they were ‘sacred’. The ‘sacred’ spot was only on one hill but the entire range was suddenly considered sacred. These NGOs, unfortunately backed by Rahul Gandhi, also persuaded the local Adivasi people that they alone had the right to the bauxite reserves in the hills. The truth is that natural resources belong to the entire population of India and not to local groups who happen to reside in the vicinity. Or Bihar’s coal would not be considered a national resource and nor would Karnataka’s iron ore. The Ministry of Environment was so busy

ON NOT SUPPORTING AAP T

HE reason why one should not be a part of AAP is because their only focus is on corruption, whereas I think that the central issue for our society as well as globally, is inequality. So long as we are not able to build a society where every human being respects another human being to the same extent that he/she expects from others, we will not have a humane society. This will not be achieved by merely removingof corruption. Let us assume that in Arvind Kejriwal’s rule, corruption is totally banished. There is not a single paisa of bribe given or taken. Let us also assume that people directly participate in every decision made, through gram sabhas or mohalla sabhas, i.e. swarajya is established. Will we then be satisfied? What about caste based discrimination? Will the rich be willing to sit beside the poor? Will every woman feel safe and will it mean the end of patriarchy? Will there be an end to violence? Will half the children, who are victims of malnutrition and therefore school dropouts, start receiving full nutritious meals as well as be able to attend schools of the quality that children of the rich go to? Will the poor be able to receive treatment of the same quality that the rich can afford in private hospitals? AAP has promised to halve the electricity

denying licenses to major projects that it paid no attention to infinitely more important environmental issues like the pollution of our sacred rivers and the cutting down of what is left of our forests. It should be the Ministry of Environment’s job to improve waste management and sanitation in our cities but this was not something that either Jairam or Jayanthi paid any attention to. Instead there was direct interference in such things as how high a building should be in Mumbai and whether helicopters should be allowed to land in the city.

bill, but what about those who are yet to be connected to the grid and will probably never get connected? We simply don’t produce enough electricity in this country for everybody because we don’t have enough resources. The rich and those who service them will have access to it, not everyone. If we don’t

OTHER VIEW Dr. Mukund Aparajit find a cleaner alternative to thermal power soon, the situation of paucity is not going to change in the near future. Water is a natural resource and meant to fulfill the basic needs of all human beings. The government or any private company

When Jairam Ramesh became so tyrannical, in his tenure in the ministry, he had to be kicked upstairs by the Prime Minister who was then ordered by ‘the top’ to install yet another loyalist of the Dynasty in his place. The Prime Minister knew that the Environment Ministry was behaving like a license raj and that this was frightening away investors, so behind the idea of replacing Jairam with Jayanthi was the hope that she would rectify the damage that her predecessor had done. She quickly belied this hope by squatting on files in a way that left everyone puzzled until rumours started to spread about the ‘Jayanthi tax’. Towards the end of her tenure these rumours became so strong that the environment in the ministry began to have about it the reek of A. Raja days when officials spread rumours far and wide that there was a rate card on the minister’s desk. Not much was done to protect India’s environment in his time but by the time that Jairam and Jayanthi finished their stints in this ministry there were people who were almost nostalgic for Raja. They said this was because you knew exactly where you stood and what the price of a clearance was. Jairam and Jayanthi draped themselves in a cloak of probity but beneath it the ministry worked as nefariously as it has always done and with as little genuine concern for saving India’s environment. For me personally this is much more of a criminal act than if there was a ‘Jayanthi tax’. The one thing that can be said with certainty is that India’s real environmental problems have not even begun to be dealt with because of ministers who concentrated only on stopping big infrastructure projects in which huge investments had already been made. So if people are talking about a ‘Jayanthi tax’ nobody should complain. doesn’t have any right to sell it. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that that all human beings get as much water as they need for drinking, irrigation, bathing etc. But water should not be wasted in swimming pools, water parks or golf fields. Since we want to build a humane society which will not have any place for violence, we dream of creating a weapons-free world, at the level of individuals as well as nations. Hence, the Socialist Party has decided that its members should not discriminate among human beings, be against all forms of corruption but also believe in the concept of security without weapons. Brave people like Arvind Kejriwal don’t feel the need for weapons for their security. Also, AAP’s foundation is based on the concept of nationalism. We believe that the concept of nationhood is as divisive as that of caste and religion. The security of nations is ensured by their relations with neighbours based on trust and not by nuclear weapons. It is because of the above mentioned differences in some basic ideologies and also because of the corporate style functioning of the party, where people are being associated with not on the basis of human relationships but because of their utility value, that a person like me doesn’t feel comfortable being a part of AAP. However, since the party is out to change the decadent political culture in this country, we hope it will rid the politics of this country of corruption and criminalisation.

Are tolls still necessary? THIS refers to the series of attacks on toll plazas in various parts of Maharashtra. Though these attacks are carried out mainly by those belonging to some political party, they have also given room for serious thought on whether tolls should still be collected. Ordinary people have started feeling the burden of tolls levied by plazas which have mushroomed over the last few years. Year after year some bridge is constructed in an obscure place, or a road is widened and even before these become operational, toll nakas are built to collect charges for the recovery of the cost and for maintenance too. The imposition and collection of toll has become a good business for the government and the authorities concerned. And in our country, once a toll is levied, it remains forever – irrespective of whether the cost is recovered or the place is not maintained. What then is the role of PWD and where do our taxes go? Does the state government not utilize tax for the provision of infrastructure? Some awareness must be created and people should come out strongly against the rampant imposition of tolls at the whims and fancies of the state gov-

Amitabh Bachchan was the face of the polio eradication programme and his contribution was immense as his magnetic appeal drew the masses to the drive. Today, we are a polio free nation within a decade of the operation. Every doctor, social worker and organisation associated with the programme deserves special mention and applause. Polio centers must now be well equipped around the country so that vaccination is given to every new born baby.

Revoke Hatekar’s suspension THIS refers to the report ‘Gurukul style!’ (January 14) which states that 118 students of Mumbai University who had registered for the two courses in economics taught by the suspended Profesor Neeraj Hatekar, had approached him with a request to conduct his lectures outside the campus in Kalina which he has agreed to. And his classes will be ‘Gurukul Style’ if he does so. At a time when the university has earned a name for itself by goofing up so many examinations, this suspension of a professor who is loved so much by all his students could have been avoided at all costs. As one of the students has pointed out, no substitute professor has been named to conduct these courses so that the syllabus can be completed. What is going on in the university is something unprecedented and the authorities concerned will do well to realise that the students will stand to lose if

BRING HIM BACK: The authorities concerned will do well to realise that the students will stand to lose if the courses are not taught on schedule and must therefore reinstate him at the earliest. the courses are not taught on schedule and must therefore reinstate him at the earliest. The matter involving him can be looked into separately. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

expert speak

Interior designer Alpana Kirloskar, tells us about some interesting ways in which the colour can be incorporated into your home. Take a look at what she recommends: “Radiant Orchid — Pantone's colour of the year, is a lovely lavender with just the right mix of purple and pink hues in it. Incorporating this colour in your homes can be extremely fun as one can play around with the colour in multiple ways. You don't have to go all out with the colour by turning your entire home into a radiant orchid. The trick is to make it blend well with the rest of the décor by adding interesting pops of this colour. The colour goes really well in its natural form with neutral greyscales like blacks, greys and whites. If you wish to accentuate its royal purple side, pair it with darker colours such as blue, brown or green and to highlight its vibrant pink side, pair it with bright shades such as red, orange and yellow. To add a subtle touch, you can buy lamps, side tables, coffee tables and even your crockery in this colour as it has a lovely, delicate look. If you want something bolder, you can paint an entire wall of a room in this shade. This would work really well in a child’s room or maybe even on your kitchen shelves.”

f one is to connect Lekha Washington to Bollywood, the only feeble recollection that you would be able to evoke (with prodding though) is as Imran Khan’s old friend who saves the day, albeit for a short span of time, for the villagers in the movie Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. A noteworthy mention would be of the yet to be released and mired in producer-director dispute, Peter Gaya Kaam Se, where she has the female lead opposite actor Rajeev Khandelwal. Lekha is a known face in the South Indian movie industry with several films to her credit, such as Jayamkondaan and Vedam. However, we are far more interested in Lekha’s fine arts inspired persona — a self-taught sculptor, product designer and the founder of Ajji: The Odd Product Company. Her patented Sink Collection is indeed the highlight of her product designing work so far. We had a quick chat with her about Ajji, her eclectic and path-breaking collections and her creative thought process. What makes you happier — designing products, such as the ones from The Sink Collection, or acting in movies? Both make me super happy and I absolutely love the balance of both in my life.

How come your surname is Washington? Tell us more about your lineage. I’m part Burmese, Punjabi, Maharashtrian and Italian, so I’m quite confused! Having a name like Washington in Mumbai allows me to never take myself too seriously. It has a high recall value as well. How did inspiration strike for your Sink Collection? The Pink Sink was designed and prototyped a decade ago at NID (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, where she studied). Since then, I sat on the design (no pun intended) as I worked my way through the acting world. When I had the chance, I expanded the idea of the Pink Sink to the Sink collection — chairs that look quite impossible to sit on; art pieces that are also incredibly comfortable. What is your thought process like when it comes to designing such innovative products? Do you keep thinking about it till an idea hits you, or is it more like a moment of epiphany? A bit of both, the seed of an idea is an epiphany and then I keep thinking about it until it fleshes itself out.

You completed a dual degree in lifestyle product design and film direction. How did you develop a penchant for acting? I always knew I liked performing, but being behind the camera accentuated how much I like being in front of it.

I heard that the new collection that you are working on is called Bent Light. What is it about and when can we expect it to be out for consumers? It will launch in February at the Design Fair in Delhi. It’s quite an exciting collection and we are currently working on getting the patents for it.

Ajji – tell us why you picked this name? Phonetically, it’s simple and mildly of a Japanese aesthetic. Personally, it reminds me of one hell of a woman — my grandmother.

On the acting front, what does 2014 have in store for you? Two very promising projects look like they are in the pipeline, but there’s many a slip between cup and lip, so I shall keep mine pursed until they happen.

D

id you ever think there would be a championship dedicated to nail styling and nail art? Well, that’s why India’s first professional nail championship, called Nailathon, was so exciting. Organised by StyleSpeak, the one-of-a-kind event saw nail technicians from across India showcasing their talent and skill in a range of competitions. Participants could choose from several categories including French Jazz (a re-invention of the traditional French manicure, with only two visible colours), Salon Fast & Perfect (a competition on how quickly they could apply and polish gel nails without a hitch), Fantasy en Vogue (extensions and sculpting in themes given), Bridal Chic (for Indian brides) and a Salon Team Challenge. Judges included Jacqueliene Yeung of Star Nails International from USA and Robert ‘The Kid’ Nguyen from OPI, USA. Supported by brands such as OPI, Lure Nails and Jessica, the Nailathon not only gifted the winners but also had gift hampers distributed to lucky contestants. The event was attended by professionals from the nail industry and was aimed at creating awareness about the industry, which StyleSpeak believes, has a lot of growth and potential in the beauty segment. The entire event was put together by StyleSpeak, which is India’s first professional beauty magazine for salon and beauty professionals. There was also an exhibition of different brands offering equipment, gadgets, design and nail care products at this event. * For more information, visit www.nailathon.com

With your body all covered up on top, you need something that breaks up your look. A chunky statement necklace or earrings may look and feel too heavy for your look. Your best bet would be to wear a delicate but layered chain. It adds class to the dress but doesn’t take away from it.

« just out! LAKMé SKIN GLOSS wINTER INTENSE MOISTURISER This is not very different when it comes to other moisturisers that Lakmé offers. The only thing intense about the moisturiser that I found was its texture — it is thick and heavy, so just a little bit is enough for your face and neck. The smell of the moisturiser is pleasant and light, perfect for those who don’t like strong fragrances. With my combination skin type, the moisture provided stayed with me till the very end of the day. However, while it did a good job at moisturising my skin, I did find my face a little duller after its application instead of the other way round. The fragrance is too overpowering when you spray it; because of the excessive gas that it creates around you when you spray, it sort of overpowers your senses — definitely not in a pleasant way. Well, the Orange Eye Pillow from Nature’s Co. helps with that. We didn’t really associate oranges with relaxation but the mildly scented eye pillow smells divine and very calming. I tried it on and it was great in blocking out the light, calming me and relaxing my eyes. But, when I took off the mask a mere 10 minutes later, I had a terrible case of blurry vision. All my calm left me. Turns out, I put it on a little too tight. A panic attack and another try later, I feel the Orange Eye Pillow is nice. STRAPLESS

This style of dress suits athletic shapes. The sleeves are in-cut and the neck line is usually high with no cleavage in sight. When accessorising this type of neckline, skip earrings and a necklace as there’s already too much going on on top. Bring attention to your arms by wearing stacked bracelets or a solid cuff.

3. GUESS For wide-legged pants that scream stylish, pick up this pair from Guess. They’ve got a stylish cut and fitted bottom that makes them perfect for any occasion. Price `6,695

4. HEELS You wouldn’t imagine the world of difference a pair of heels can make to a pair of wide leg trousers. Not only do they give the illusion of elongated legs, but they also make the trousers fall properly.

If you’ve got a dress with a deep V, you need to accentuate your assets but not too much. The deep V perfectly complements a delicate pendant chain. Just make sure the chain stops an inch or so above your cleavage. A pendant that gets stuck between your breasts is not a good look.

2. BEBE We know that the idea of colourful wide legged bottoms is probably too much for you, but these drawstring ones from Bebe are cute enough to be fashionable. Price `6,450

3. wORK-FRIENDLY Don’t be scared to channel this trend into your work wardrobe. Team a pair of wide leg trousers with a tucked in solid shirt and a pair of heels, preferably Mary Jane heels. Add a cropped jacket or blazer and you are good to go.

1. HEM LINE When picking a pair of wide leg trousers, the hemline is crucial. Make sure the hem of your trousers is no more than half an inch above the ground. If the hemline is any shorter, you legs look chunky and the look comes across as less chic, more comical.

A sweetheart neckline is very popular and it flatters all figures. The best accessory to pair with this type of neckline is a statement necklace. Just make sure it’s short and draws the attention towards your face and doesn’t have to fight for attention with your cleavage.

DAME HELEN MIRREN

Sofia can do no wrong in our eyes. The bombshell oozes glamour and sexiness in her black ball gown. The skirt is a little on the big side but with Sofia, a touch of drama is a given. She offsets the dress perfectly with a statement necklace and a fuss free hairstyle.

Helen is just a sight to behold in this lovely teal gown with a touch of sparkle. The drape and sleeves are very flattering as is the pop of emerald on her ears. With her short hair swept to one side, Helen is the picture of poise, grace, class and timeless beauty.

Exposed arms and a bare neck call for one thing – a kickass pair of statement earrings. The bigger the better. If you’re wearing a black dress, make sure to pick a colourful pair. Add a simple ring and you’re good to go. RED HOT  This pair from Notandas Jewellers looks stunning with a black dress. Price `1.5 lakh

Emma makes a bold fashion statement on the red carpet. We know it looks a little kooky but the pants with dress trend is going to be big this year. So, get used to it. And plus, it must be so comfortable! We love how her accessories are minimal so that all eyes are on her outfit.

The internet has gone crazy with people replicating her dress with a white quilt and some duct tape. While the effervescent actress carries it off with confidence, we don’t think this dress is very flattering. It’s too much of a napkin in a holder for our liking. Love the earrings though.

Lena gets a lot of flak for her body and dress sense but we love the fun she adds to the red carpet. She looks great in her canary yellow dress that shows off her small waist and lush curves. And thankfully, she’s ditched the smokey eye makeup for red lips. Much better!

Maternity Matters Shutterstock

Few countries in the world have friendly policies for working mothers, who not only get maternity leave but also some time after it to settle in their little one. Priyanka Singh tells you where to channel your envy

Canada Depending on the length of employment and the number of hours worked in the preceding year, new moms in Canada can take 17 to 52 weeks of unpaid leave from their jobs. Some parents are also eligible for leave through Canada’s employment insurance plan, which offers 15 weeks for moms, plus 35 additional weeks for either parent. Employers are also required to take parents back at the same rate of pay, with the same employment benefits. To qualify for employment insurance, parents must have 600 hours of insured income during the previous 52 weeks, or since their last leave.

australia Australia is ranked as one of the top 10 countries for mothers by Save the Children, a London-based NGO. Parents raising children get 126 days of paid maternity and paternity leave. Parents can also get up to a year of unpaid parental leave if they adopt. And low income families who have a baby or adopt a child can qualify for a ‘baby bonus’ of 13 bi-weekly payments meant to help with the costs of raising a newborn baby.

iCeland Iceland has one of the most generous parental leave systems in the world. In 2000, Iceland passed a law providing equal parental leave for new mothers as well as fathers. Parents get nine months paid leave and up to 80% of their salary. Three months are set aside for the mother, three months can be taken by the father and the couple can share the remaining three months. Also, this will be extended to 10 months this year, 11 months in 2015 and 12 months in 2016, with five months to be taken by each parent and two months to be decided between them.

sweden 15 months of maternity leave at 80% pay — the best perks of any developed country. Sweden also has the highest participation of women in government, with 45 percent of seats held by women. In addition, it has excellent pre-school and secondary school enrolment and the risk of maternal death in Sweden is very low (one in 11,400 women).

Finland >> Pregnancy can be much smoother when your work place has pregnancy-friendly policies. Unfortunately, there are several other countries that rank much higher than India

W

hile India doesn’t even come close to be known for its pregnancy-friendly policies, a few companies, especially the ones belonging to the information technology sector, have now woken up to this often ignored problem of mothers. Forget paternity leave, even maternity leave is an issue in most

companies. We can only hope for more firms to recognise the importance of providing facilities to pregnant women and working mothers in India. Meanwhile we tell you about the other in the world which have the best working policies for working mothers. Read on to find out more about the standards India has to match up to.

Remember the BBC’s report on why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes? It was about a cardboard box that doubles as a bassinet and comes packed with bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products, diapers and bedding – baby care products by the Finnish government. And that’s not all Finnish mothers get. Perks of having a baby include 105 days of paid maternity leave, 158 days of parental leave that can be shared between new parents and then shortened hours until the child is two. Plus, paid child-care leave and free daycare. Despite paying pretty high taxes that can reach beyond 50% in some instances, it’s still of little wonder why Finland is after all, the 9th happiest country in the world. Come on India, catch up!

we tell you how to deal a pompous Colleague My team member and I were assigned an important project. However, because of personal reasons, I had to go on emergency leave. I asked my colleague if she would be able to manage on her own. She said yes. However, now that I am back, I have noticed a change in her behaviour. She has become cold and working with her is proving to be problematic. I know I shouldn’t have left, but she did say she could manage. What should I do? — harsha raichand, mahim dear harsha, You might feel that her behaviour is uncalled for and that you are in the right but she probably feels the same too. So, the question here is who is willing to put their ego aside. If you want to solve this issue, we suggest that you go up to her and apologise

unconditionally. Don’t bring up the point that she agreed to manage it on her own as that will just lead to a blame game and that actual problem won’t get solved. It seems like a minor issue and an apology is sure to repair your relationship with her. A colleague of ours has started talking about his association with various charities and how he donates most of his salary. The problem is that he does this in a condescending manner and keeps commenting on how none of us do that and says we are greedy for money. It leads to uncomfortable and awkward moments which completely ruins our lunch and coffee breaks. What can we do to avoid confrontation but still make sure he keeps shut? — Kainaz mistry, Charni road

dear Kainaz, Ignore, ignore, ignore — this is the best way you’re going to be able to shut him up. Go down any other path and it’s sure to lead to a minor argument. People like him (we are not commenting on his character — he might actually be a good person) talk like he does only because of the response that you’ll might be providing him. Once he realises that none of you are too interesting in what he is talking about (no matter how righteous his cause) he will stop talking like he does sooner or later. T

he rules of dating change from generation to generation, so as a parent, never assume you know it all just because you’ve been there and done that. Chances are, you really haven’t! Children these days do things differently, so much so that you may not even recognise they’re dating when they begin to. If your teenager has just started showing an interest in falling in love and being with one person for prolonged periods of time, you’re probably getting anxious, paranoid and collecting your thoughts for the big lecture you want to give them. Most teenagers want a ‘cool’ parent but being completely ‘chilled’ can backfire too. In order to cope with your teenager dating, help them stay safe and remind them that you’re on their side, so that they don’t hide things from you. Here are a few tips to help you out.

once in a while will help them realise you’re their parent as well as friend. Have an open home: Parents think that banning the opposite sex from visiting or calling at home is a good way to ensure your child stays away from the dating game but in fact, it has the opposite effect. Tell a child not to do something and they’re curious enough to try it at least once. Having a mixed group of friends helps your child see the opposite sex as an equal, which is also a good parenting tip.

If they say no, don’t push it: Some children don’t feel comfortable telling their parents that they’re dating, especially if it’s their first boyfriend/ girlfriend. It’s a confusing time for them, since these feelings are something new that they have to deal with. Give them space and time to tell you themselves, even if you’re 99% sure.

Be informed: Instead of setting rules, be interested. Ask your children where they’re going and what they’re doing. Most children start lying to their parents about their whereabouts when the parents chide them for little things like going for too many movies or “wasting time” at a friend’s house. Set boundaries, but make sure to leave enough room for your teenager to be a teenager and see how much more they’ll tell you about where they are. Ask them to text you at regular intervals instead of constantly calling them and explain that while you don’t mean to nag, you would feel better about letting them enjoy themselves if you knew where they were.

Meet the friends: Don’t make their crush an issue. Teenagers, especially when they are beginning to date, tend to go out in groups. Meeting the group (call them over for a dinner or host a party) will help you note the dynamics between them and get to know each one of them without being overbearing or embarrassing your child. And treating them

Set a curfew: Set a curfew the minute they turn into teenagers! When they start dating, they’re going to want to push it — so make sure you set it in stone. Set a reasonable one that allows them to have a little fun though. And remember that the same deadline they stuck to as 13-year-olds won’t work when they’re 17-years-old so, adjust it accordingly.

Set guidelines: Talk to your child about sexual health, safety and the perils of being reckless. Don’t make it a lecture or sit them down to talk about all of it at once. Weave it into conversations instead. Children are smarter than you think and usually don’t need to be told the same thing twice… in fact, the more you try to drill it in, the more they switch off. Let them make mistakes: As a parent, you can’t save them from getting their hearts broken. Sure, you know how it goes in the future — you know that their “true love” at 16 will be a bittersweet memory at 20 or a crushing blow at 18. Don’t lecture them about who they date (unless they’re harmful) or how they go about their relationships. Let them live, love and learn from their own mistakes. Build trust: Are you uncomfortable with your teenager in the room with their date and the door locked? If your teenager is between 13 and 16, keeping the door open is a good idea. After they’re 16, allow them to close but not lock it. This way they have privacy, but not too much. Talk to them about safety so they are aware of the boundaries. Monitor the internet: The one thing teenagers do today that parents don’t know how to handle is use the internet — to get dates, send pictures, meet strangers… it’s a dangerous and scary place. Set parental locks on dating sites and make sure to monitor (not restrict) use for young teens. Keep computers in the living room and don’t let them stay up online all night, at least till their 16-years-old.

One of their biggest initiatives is to better the life of the children of sex workers. Under their various programs, SAI helps these children escape the environment of brothels by helping them get admission into government schools. The organisation also has their own teachers, who provide these students with basic education and help them with their homework. The founder of SAI, Vinay Vasta says, “We want to educate more and more children in the coming year. For the last 22 years, we were successful in our ‘Mission Education’ for the children of sex workers. We are thankful to the BMC workers too, who helped us to achieve our goals. We conduct regular classes for our students and ensure that they learn to earn on their own and in a right way.” Mission Education isn’t just for children of sex workers; it also extends to poor children and those suffering from HIV. The program has helped nearly 70 students complete their degree education. Apart from helping needy children, SAI also has a number of cancer and AIDS projects. Under these projects, they have programs such as street plays for awareness, condom distribution among sex workers (they distribute around two lakh condoms every month), mobile clinics, monthly nutrition food packets, legal and document (ration card) aid as well as a number of vocational courses. *To find out more about their various projects, to see how you can be a part of them or provide help, log on to their website www.saingo.org

Class aCt

Spotted another woman flirting with your man? Don’t lose your cool as there are ways to deal with this in a classy manner, says Priyanka Singh

« sos: solve our situation!

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I was at a friend’s wedding (not a very close friend) and I was just walking up to the bar... When standing heads over everyone... OMG! What a hottiee!

of course!

I couldn’t stop staring and then our eyes met! KACHING!

>> If someone is flirting with your man, don’t cause a scene — be the bigger person by reading our tips

T

here may have been times when a man snatcher (seems like one to you!) is flirting with your guy, irrespective of the fact that you are right there or at least in the same vicinity. Oh, the audacity! While we understand that all you’d want to do is transform your well-manicured nails into claws and pounce on her, hold your reins right there and remind yourself that you are a woman of class. We tell you how to respond to the other woman’s downright crass flirtatious moves on your man in classy ways.

One: Breathe. twO: think Is she really flirting? Did she also greet you in the same touchy-feely and overly friendly way? Well, then that’s a clear case of the woman just being over-friendly. So, watch her and think twice before you make your move as you shouldn’t be overanalysing the situation. She might be outgoing in general with no intentions of stealing your man away from you.

what is he dOing? We women often accuse the other woman of being a flirt. But, come on, your man isn’t completely innocent, is he? You need to see whether your guy started the flirting or is encouraging it. You obviously don’t want to make a fool of yourself by accusing the woman of something that your man initiated. If you do notice that your man is to blame, don’t create a scene because it will embarrass you as well. While your man might try to act holier than thou, let him know subtly that you are not as ignorant as he thinks you are and are aware of what is going on. Question him once it’s just the two of you back home or alone. If this has been happening too often, we don’t need to spell it out for you, do we?

talk tO him While you are thinking of dealing with the flirt, let your man know what you think about it. You need to let him know what you are comfortable with and what you’re not — whether it is subtle flirting or being

too friendly. You don’t want to be seething while your man sits in the dark.

Flirt with him She’s flirting with him? You start teasing him as well! Get touchy, compliment him, wink at him and do everything that you used to do to flirt with him in your initial days of dating. As time passes, we stop these little shenanigans which actually keep the spark of a relationship alive. Let him know that you’ve still got your mojo and you’ll see that his eyes won’t leave you for the entire evening, with the other woman fading away in the background.

He was standing at the bar so I just walked up, placed my order and acted cool... then he smiled! I nearly swooned!

Hi! Lovely wedding... Good night for romance. I’m Kapil...

In five minutes flat, I was in LOVE!

lastly, cOnFrOnt her If it still doesn’t stop, you will have to confront her. Don’t start a fight, but just be firm and let her know that her behaviour is unwelcome. Don’t show your anger because that would mean that her petty advances really did affect you to a great length. Also, avoid calling her names or cursing as you don’t want to appear rash — be the bigger person.

The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, dressed up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!

We hung out the whole wedding, chatting, dancing, eating.

« Dear graCe, i have a problem... dear grace,

My husband has really piled on the pounds this festive season. And he doesn’t seem to be letting go of the party mood he is in. He drinks every other day and eats so much junk food at work. I am reasonably healthy and hate to see him slide down this path. How can I make him get back to normal? — soumita Pancholi, malad dear soumita, Let’s talk about what you shouldn’t do

before we tell you about the things you can do. Don’t tell him he needs to stop eating junk food and start exercising. You’re going to sound like a nag no matter how noble your intentions. And he, being a dude, will only reach for another bag of salty chips. You can’t change him unless he wants to change. But, you can encourage him and push him in the right direction. And a little emotional bribing is okay here — it’s for a good cause! Pack him healthy treats and

act offended if he picks greasy snacks over them at work. Slowly replace food at home with healthy alternatives and sign up for a dance class. There are other ways to keep the party alive than just eating and drinking. You and your friends should head out for a hike or meet up to cycle early in the morning. The key is to make the whole process fun.

"We fixed up a date for next Friday and he disappeared. At home, I realised he didn’t give me his phone number. So, the next day I called the bride to ask for it and she had no idea who he was! Why is she pretending not to know who he is?” — Serendipity a) Uh-oh. Gate-crasher! Or maybe your description doesn’t match hers. But, you’re being tacky by calling the bride the day after her wedding to get a number for a hook-up! b) You have a date... and a mystery it seems. Please don’t go if the date is in a secluded place. In fact, don’t go at all! c) Meet him and ask him what’s going on! If he turns up that is. LAST WEEK: Young Sister should pick Option B: Talk to her and let her know how you feel. But, if something should happen between them, it is between them!

Mehul will be seen playing the role of a public prosecutor Ramesh Menon who will fight cases against KD Pathak. The actor has started shooting for the show and the episodes will be aired in February 2014. When contacted, Mehul confirmed the news.

It’s a wonderful experience. Since most of the cast is new, it is easy to relate to them. I get along well with everyone from the production unit and the actors. We shot in the beautiful locales of Jaipur making it an ethereal experience.

What is your character on the show like? My character Bhawna is etched very thoughtfully and many middle aged women of our country especially who have grown-up children will resonate with her feelings and sentiments. She is the kind of woman who turns a house into a home and keeps the family together while maintaining a bond between all the members. She shares a friendlike equation with her daughter who is just stepping into her youth. I play a mother who is a bridge between the old and new generations. And since I've never done a motherly role before, I was drawn to the project.

Reena Kapoor, who became a household name as Rani in ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’, will be now seen in a pivotal role in Zee TV’s prime time drama, 'Aur... Pyaar Ho Gaya'. Sandeep M Hattangadi spoke to Reena about her return to television after a brief sabbatical.

What about films? Nothing substantial has been offered to me yet, and if I get a role with substance I will definitely do it.

Are you open to reality shows? Yes. Why not? I will take it up as a challenge but I should feel comfortable with the show.

Do you have any role models or inspirations? I really adore Aamir Khan because he doesn’t act but performs in every film and his dedication and talent is something I look up to.

What kind of shows do you like to watch? I really don’t watch much television because the shows nowadays are not like the early 80s and 90s. I don't find today’s shows really interesting but I do watch popular sit-coms like ‘Friends’ sometimes. Catch Reena Kapoor in action from Monday to Friday at 10pm.

What made you take up this show? The fact that this is a Rajan Shahi show being aired on ZEE TV made me take it up. Also, after ‘Woh Rehnewali Mehlon Ki’, I wanted an equally powerful role, and this character of mine is an important one. What is it like working on the show?

Markets Positively Trended

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (January 16, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Wednesday (January 15, 2014) a net 79.05 points (1.27%) and closed at the 6320 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6265 points level and that level itself was the low of the session. It then rose sharply and turned into a range bound movement until 3.02 p.m. The index then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6325 points level at 3.27 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 60 points and closed above the psychologically important 6300 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 45 were gainers, while just 5 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices barring consumer durables and healthcare closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen in capital goods, banking, realty and auto stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 18.59%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth:Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 776 were gainers, 693 were losers and 63 remained unchanged. Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indica tor: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It has crossed above its 9-day Average (positive and a buy signal).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

with a positive bias.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5958 points level. The next support is at the 5877 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6372 points level. The next resistance is at the 6424 points level. Pivot Point Analysis:For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6304 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6282. Support (2) = 6244. Resistance (1) = 6342. Resistance (2) = 6364.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:

On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a long white body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive. Further, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6235) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6241) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6233) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5934) Positive.

Overa ll Market Strength/Weaknes s: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market

Target Rs. 1720

CMC reported Q3FY14 results below our & consensus expectation. The company reported revenue below our expectation; however, the margin was in-line with our expectation. The performance was led by Customer Service and Education & Training. We reiterate our ‘Accumulate’ rating, with a revised target price of Rs 1,720 as we tweak our estimates. The company reported 14 new client additions, but international business declined by 3.5% QoQ. Revenue below, margin in-line with expectation: CMC reported a flat revenue growth QoQ to Rs 5,609m (PLe: Rs 5,767m, Cons: Rs 5,826m). EBITDA margin expanded by 42bp to 16.2% (PLe: 16.2%, Cons: 15.8%) led by margin improvement in Customer Services and Education & Training. PAT grew by 4.9% to Rs 706m (PLe: Rs 711m, Cons: Rs 682m) due to lower ETR of 19.1% (Q2FY14: 20.1%, Q1FY14: 34.4%). Sub-contracting cost reverses back to mean as growth in international business dwindles: Sub-contracting cost declined 7.3% QoQ due to decline in ITES and international business. The weakness in international market has been attributed to seasonality. The client addition (49 clients) has been strong over the past three quarters. We expect the project ramp-ups would push the subcontracting cost up. We see the margin expansion driven by offshore drive continues to remain elusive. International business weakness attributed to seasonality: CMC reported weak System Integration (-1.5% QoQ) and IT Enabled Services (-13.6% QoQ). CMC has delivered revenue decline of 3.5% QoQ international business. Worth exploring? 1) Decline in ITES revenue is beyond the usual seasonality? 2) Do we expect more acceleration in E&T business? Valuation & Recommendation: We see weak revenue momentum in Q3FY14 as a matter of concern. We reiterate ‘Accumulate’, with a target price of Rs 1,720, 14x FY16E earnings estimates.

Kotak Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on AllCargo Logistics CMP: Rs. 131

Target Rs. 160

As one of the largest players in the global Non Vessel Owning Common Carrier (NVOCC) space, Allcargo Logistics (ALL) is well-placed to derive maximum benefits from the ongoing recovery in global trade. The company’s well-entrenched international presence is likely to strengthen further through the proposed acquisitions in the NVOCC segment in Europe and US - this could also act as a near-term trigger for the stock. We estimate the (Multimodal Transport Operation) MTO segment to grow at 7% in FY14 and 5% in FY15 (management guides 10%) with some margin decline. The key container Freight Station (CFS) business has shown some improvement in the business in the last two quarters. While revenues for the project engineering solution division have been volatile primarily due to weak economic environment and slow capex cycle. We rerate the stock and assign a PE of 10 x (earlier 7.5 x) on the back of 1) Immune nature of MTO (LCL) business to weak trade: 2) Latest acquisitions which help diversify the business and 3) estimated recovery in global trade. We recommend BUY on Allcargo with an increased TP of Rs 160 (earlier Rs.120). Non Vessel Owned Container Carrier (NVOCC) or Multimodal Transport Operations (MTO) continues to show growth: ALL generates its ~10% MTO volume from Indian market and the remaining 90% MTO volume through ECU Line which has its presence in over 59 countries. MTO business largely depends upon the performance of the container shipping segment. However, the global container markets have been bad for the last three years but showing signs of stability in the last 3 months. But ALL been a Less than Container Load (LCL) consolidator won’t be much impacted by the weakness in the container market. Typically LCL volumes are more immune to slackness in container trade as a large part of Full Container Load (FCL) volumes during bad times gets converted into LCL volumes. Outlook and Valuation: We estimate the (Multimodal Transport Operation) MTO segment to grow at 7% in FY14 and 5% in FY15 (management guides 10%) with some margin decline despite bad times as the company primarily operates in LCL segment which is more immune to sluggishness in container trade. Strong relationships will help the company to outperform its peers and grow at 5% in volumes in FY14 and 3% in FY15 in the CFS segment. We also estimate revenue for the PES division to continue to grow in FY14 to Rs 5.8 bn (+22% YoY) and to Rs 6.5 bn in FY15E (+ 13% YoY) on the back of new order wins during the year. Consequently we estimate earnings to grow by 5.6% in FY14 at Rs 1.78 bn (EPS of Rs 14.3/share) and to grow by 13.2% in FY15 to Rs 2 bn (EPS of 15.9/share). We rerate the stock and assign a PE of 10 x (earlier 7.5 x) on the back of 1) Immune nature of MTO (LCL) business to weak trade: 2) Latest acquisitions which help diversify the business and 3) estimated recovery in global trade. We recommend BUY on ALL with an increased TP of Rs 160.

Repo Rates May Not Be hiked As inflation touches a five-month low

By A Business Reporter

W

PI inflation has fallen to 6.2% in December 2013 from 7.5% in the previous month. Led by a sharp fall in vegetables inflation, primary inflation came down to 10.8% from near 16% in November, driving down the overall inflation. CPI inflation for December too fell below the 10% mark from 11.2% in November. “With the noise in inflation data (created by high and volatile prices of vegetables) likely to abate further, we do not expect the Reserve Bank of India to raise the repo rate in its monetary policy review scheduled on January 28, “ says Crisil Research. Even Care Core inflation measured by nonfood manufacturing inflation rose

marginally to 2.8% in December and remains close to the RBI’s threshold of 3%. CRISIL’s Core inflation Indicator (CCII), an alternative measure of core inflation remained unchanged at 3.2% in December while CPI core inflation continues to stay above 8%. The magnitude of pick-up in core inflation in the coming months would be a key factor influencing future monetary policy actions. In addition, clarity on policy stance will emerge once the report by the expert committee set up to revise and strengthen the monetary policy framework is released. A sharp jump in the prices of vegetables since July 2013 has been contributing to inflation significantly in the recent months (Figure 1). From July to December 2013, vegetables contributed nearly 24% to overall inflation. In December,

prices of vegetables finally saw a correction as compared to the previous month, which resulted in year-on-year inflation in the category falling to 57.3% in December from a high of 95.2% in November. Commenting on the numbers, FICCI President, Sidharth Birla says “Just like the WPI numbers, the CPI data for December 2013 also indicated moderation on account of easing food prices. Food inflation is largely determined by supply side factors and we hope the government pursues policies that would help address the shortages so that food inflation further softens in the months ahead. As for manufactured goods inflation, this is certainly on the lower side and with industrial production limping, we hope the RBI will consider a downward revision in policy rates later this month

determining the asset allocation is the Yield Gap ratio, which is the ratio of debt market yield to equity market yield. 10Y G-Sec yield is used as the proxy for debt market yield, while earnings yield of equity markets is simply the reciprocal of the Nifty Price/Earnings ratio. By evaluating the ratio of these two yields, one can assess whether equity markets are overpriced or under-priced relative to debt markets. Reassurance of commitment

I am a 22-year-old married woman. My husband has a very dominating personality. However, he suffers from a constant ‘fear’ that I may become sexually interested in someone else. I have not given him any reason to have this fear. How do I help him and myself to get rid of this situation? THE domineering husband, who believes he owns his wife, does not want to lose her for anyone else. He constantly feels that her infidelity is just a matter of the right opportunity. Is she just flirting?

We met over the net through chat and felt a strong bond of love between us. After some months of sharing our words, we declared our love growing for one another; we hadn't seen each other by then. From one year she is not responding properly (she went to a hostel then) but before that she used to write daily. When she goes home, she calls me but still I feel like I do not know much about what was her life during last one year. I went to see her twice this year and her reactions were very loving. She lives very far, I know, we had been together for five days each time, but after I return, her behaviour is again the same. Is she just flirting me or having some other guy in her life and things like that. LONG distance relationships very rarely work out. Life is so dynamic and both of you are living in two completely different worlds. From what you are saying it seems that though she has

feelings for you, she is not ready to have an absolutely ‘committed relationship’ right now. Also she seems to want her ‘space’ to live a life beyond just you and her. If you come across as being too possessive about her or too demanding of her time, it may cramp her style and she may start avoiding you. You seem to have invested too much emotionally in this girl. I would advise you to have a social life of your own and also to take up some creative activity. This will give you a sense of fulfillment, which is important to cope with the highs and lows of life. As for this girl, give her ‘space’ and take some ‘time out’ for yourself, so that you can both assess whether there can really be something meaningful and lasting between both of you. ELBOURNE: Title favourites Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams shrugged off a second day of intense heat to reach the Australian Open third round today alongside China's Li Na. Djokovic, watched by new coach Boris Becker, flew past against Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-0, 6-4, 64, extending his Melbourne streak to 23 straight wins. With temperatures close to 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) Williams also took the fast route with a 63-minute demolition of Serbia'sVesna Dolonc. "It was tough conditions out there. I think it keeps getting hotter. Every day is really hot," said the 17-time Grand Slam title-winner. Li, twice a finalist at Melbourne Park, subdued a challenge from Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic, touted as the new Martina Hingis, to make the third round for the fifth year in a row. Spanish third seed David Ferrer beat France's Adrian Mannarino to progress alongside Tomas Berdych, the world number seven, who downed Kenny De Schepper. Ice packs and energy drinks remained in high demand after Canada's Frank Dancevic fainted and China's Peng Shuai vomited in extreme temperatures on Tuesday. After a tournament-record nine withdrawals in the first round, Croatia's Ivan Dodig became the latest casualty when he pulled out with cramp in the fourth set of his match against Damir Dzumhur. A report said that Dodig thought he might have "died" in the hot conditions, blasting them as unacceptable. Despite complaints about the heat, which is forecast to remain for another two days, organisers have baulked at halting play, saying humidity is low enough to mitigate any risk. Djokovic, a previous casualty of the Australian heat after retiring during his 2009 quarter-final, said his switch to a gluten-free diet had helped him cope. "I've matured and I got physically better and changed a few things in my diet that helps me to maintain the fitness at a high level throughout the whole year," he said.

DJOKOVIC, WILLIAMS RUN HOT IN MELBOURNE

"Obviously it wasn't always like this. Even today it was as hard for him (Mayer) as it was for me and you have to find that mental edge in the tough moments and overcome the conditions." Djokovic had been off his clinical best in his first-round match, but he returned to his familiar precision against Mayer, hitting 30 winners to just 11 unforced errors. Williams also lived up to her destructive reputation

against Dolonc as she goes in search of her 18th Grand Slam title, a tally which would match Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. "I'm still excited to just be here and be playing in front of this crowd. I'm happy to still be alive (in the tournament)," she said. Li raced through her first set against the 16-year-old Bencic, but was forced to fight for the second before taking the match 6-0, 7-6 (7/5).

Yuki, Bhupathi advance; Divij ousted M

ELBOURNE: Yuki Bhambri and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus recorded a straightset win on their Grand Slam debut but Divij Sharan's Australian Open campaign ended in the first round. The 21-year-old Yuki and his Kiwi partner defeated Spaniards Roberto Bautista Agut and Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2 7-5 in their opening round contest, which lasted one hour and 11 minutes. Yuki and Venus, who won wild card play-off tournament to enter the first major of the season, now have a tough job at hand now as they face 10th seeded Horea Tecau and Jean-Julien Roger in the second round. Also advancing to the second round was veteran Indian Mahesh Bhupathi and his American partner Rajeev Ram. They came from behind to beat Santiago Giraldo from Columbia and Joao Sousa from Portugal 4-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and two minutes. They now lock horns against the second-seeded pair of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares. However,

the defeat of left-handed Divij denied India an all-win day. Divij and his Taipei partner Yen-Husn Lu lost 2-6 4-6 to Johan Brunstrom from Sweden and Frederik Nielsen from Denmark.

BRITISH MAN ARRESTED FOR COURTSIDE BETTING

A British man has been arrested and charged over alleged illegal courtside betting at the Australian Open, police said. The 22-year-old, reportedly part of an Eastern European crime syndicate that targets international sports events, was spotted by police during a match on Tuesday afternoon. Details of the match were not revealed. Victorian deputy police commissioner Graham Ashton said the man was charged with one count of "engaging in conduct that would corrupt a betting outcome" and was bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

The former French Open champion admitted she was not at her best but said she was glad to make it through and escape the steamy conditions in straight sets. "Every day is different, I cannot say I played 100 percent," Li said. "Of course I cannot play 100 percent every day, but (I played) at least 60, 65 percent." Ferrer dropped the second set against Mayer but came back to win 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 in

a typically dogged display. Jeremy Chardy prompted a racquet-smashing fit from Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov when he edged their ultra-tight four-setter, which included three tie-breaks. Big-serving Polish 20th seed Jerzy Janowicz ousted Spain's Pablo Andujar in four sets, and French ninth seed Richard Gasquet beat Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko in three.

Serena mulls coaching after retirement

M

ELBOURNE: Tennis great Serena Williams on Wednesday said she would consider coaching after calling it quits -- but she admitted she's not sure she would be any good. The American, now 32, is often asked about retirement, even though she is in some of the best form of her life and shows no sign of slowing down. Martina Navratilova recently said she could challenge Steffi Graf's Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam titles. Williams is currently gunning for an 18th major to match Navratilova and Chris Evert. Off-court, she is heavily involved in charity with two Serena Williams Secondary Schools in Kenya, and she also has her own clothing line. But she said coaching could be an option. Several legends of the game have recently joined the coaching ranks, including Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg. "I never would say no to anything because I actually never thought I would play this long. So who knows, there's always apparently opportunities," Williams said, after moving into the third round of the Australian Open. But she added: "I don't even know if I would be a good coach. We'd have to see."

who played a key role at the back. The Indians, too, did a good job. Mishra from Madhya Pradesh top-scored and Delhi’s Vinay Kaushik was instrumental in making a couple of turnovers. In contrast Punjab were content to play second fiddle, but ensured they kept pace with the Americans. However, in the final quarter, Punjab upped the ante and changed tactics, which worked to their advantage. With a little less than five minutes remaining on the clock and the scores tied at 61-all, Punjab on the counter scored three quick baskets to take a crucial 67-61 lead. ASHWINI NACHAPPA HAILS ANJU’S UPGRADED GOLD M

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2014

UMBAI: Former India sprinter Ashwini Nachappa expressed happiness at ace long jumper Anju Bobby George’s upgraded gold medal in an event that she took part eight years ago and said the nation is proud of her feat though it has come after so long. “Whether it is eight years, a gold medal is a gold medal. She was at the peak of her performance at that point of time. We cherish those moments when she won the silver and we are happy that she got the gold, of course for other reasons,” Nachappa said during a promotional event. “She is extremely happy and we are very proud that she got a clean chit and the one who cheated got caught,” the 46-year-old former athlete told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of a Puma running relay event for school children in three cities - Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. Anju’s second place finish at the 2005 Monaco World Athletics final was upgraded to a gold medal yesterday, following a confirmed dope violation by Russian competitor Tatyana Kotova who had finished first but has now been stripped of her medal after her sample was found to contain traces of a banned substance when it was tested again. Nachappa, who is president of ‘Clean Sport India’, also warned that doping is rampant in India - even at the grassroot level. “I believe that performance enhancing drugs have become rampant even in our country. Among young children, it is such a dangerous trend. I am connected with athletics and when I see the junior meets that take place, it is actually quite frightening. You go to any national championship, you see syringes on the ground, in the toilets.” She wanted young athletes as well as coaches to be educated about the dangers of dope. “I think we need to have a broader ed-

Barve enters fourth round M UMBAI: Arun Barve of PYC, Pune registered an impressive win to advance to the fourth round, in the Matunga Gymkhana-Dadar Club Open Snooker Tournament on Wednesday. Barve, 53, overcame young Dev Dongre of Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana 80-47, 44-70, 48-35, 35-33 to become the first cueist in the competition to reach the fourth round. After a flying start in the opening frame, Barve surprisingly struggled in the second to drop the frame in the best-of-five contest. But he recovered in time to win the third and fourth in close finishes against an opponent who is less than half his age. In contrast, fancied Kabil Badami of Bombay Gymkhana was taken the distance by Chandu Kansodaria of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation, Borivali before snatching a 40-56, 60-31, 57-25, 33-51, 55-29 win in an exciting second round. The other significant second round winners were Ronnie Daruwalla of PJ Hindu Gymkhana, Ankit Thacker and Nikhil Ghadge of Matunga Gymkhana, Nalin Patel of Bombay Gymkhana, Raj Khandwala of CCI, Zubin Leninwala of Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana, Rohal Sakalkar of PYC, Pune and Ibrahim Shaikh of MCF who fired a 72 for the highest break of the day. Results: 2nd Rd: Kabil Badami (Bombay Gym) bt Chandu Kansodaria (MCF) 40-56, 60-31, 5725, 33-51, 55-29; A Thacker (Matunga Gym) bt Avjeet Singh (Kalyan) 63-17, 22-35, 77-2, 45-36.

Ashwini Nachappa, former Indian athlete at the Puma launches School of Speed, India's first relay running property for students in Mumbai, India on January 15. School of Speed is a relay race for children between the age group of 13 16 years, with each team comprising of 4 members who each run 1 kilometre to compete for the title of the Fastest School.

ucation, not just within the classrooms but on the field also, not just with the children but also with our trainers, because after all kids will not know what they are taking till a certain age. They are not educated enough and believe in coaches. You have got to be sensitive on these issues.” Nachappa termed the two-year ban imposed on younger fellow-athlete Ashwini Akkunji and two of the three other Asian Games gold medal winning members - Mandeep Kaur and Sini Jose - of the 4x400 relay quartet in 2011 for doping as a sad day in sports. “It was a huge blow and I thought those were the finest four after our era that we saw come on to the track. To actually watch them run in the (2010) Commonwealth Games, the entire nation watching Ashwini Akkunji run that run (in Guangzhou, China, 2010), it brought so much of pride. There was a gap after (PT) Usha, Shiny (Wilson) and myself left. You really didn’t see the relay team in that kind of a performance. Of course, it was a great shock to all of us. Sad day for Indian sports,” she said. Akkunji has served her sentence and is back on track. Nachappa also hit out at the Indian Olympic Association, which has been suspended by the international Olympic body for not amending the constitution as per their guidelines, for the current piquant situation due to which Indian athletes are being forced to take part in the next month’s Winter Olympic Games in Sochi under the IOC flag. “The fact that our Indian team is going to Winter Olympics without sorting out these issues, speaks volumes. I would have hoped that they had their general assembly and adopted the constitution as per the IOC, prior to our team going so that at least they could compete under our national flag. But unfortunately the (IOA) officials don’t consider that important at all. They have always been insensitive towards the athletes,” she said.

Making the announcement at the FIFA-Interpol national workshop here, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha highlighted lack of a legal framework as the main hurdle in probing cases related to sports fraud. "We, in CBI, have taken due notice of growing menace of corruption in sports in general and challenges in football and other sports in particular...Very soon we shall set up a sports fraud investigation unit in the CBI under special crime branches," Sinha said in his keynote address. Kiwis name ‘settled’ squad for ODI series against India

NAPIER: New Zealand named a virtually unchanged squad for the upcoming ODI series against India with the selectors keeping faith in players who drew the recent five-match home assignment against the West Indies. The 13-player squad, which drew the series 2-2 against the Caribbeans, was more or less retained with reserve batsman Colin Munro, who will return to play for his provincial side, being the only omission. "The BLACKCAPS selectors have named a settled line-up for the ANZ One Day International Series against world no.1 India starting in Napier on Sunday," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement. New Zealand ODI squad to face India: Brendon McCullum (captain), Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Luke Ronchi, Jimmy Neesham, Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne.

Islamabad HC restores Zaka Ashraf as PCB chief

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket fell fall into further chaos with a two-member divisional bench of the Islamabad High Court restoring Zaka Ashraf as Chairman of the Board. Zaka had filed an appeal against his dismissal by the single bench of the IHC headed by Justice Shaukat Siddiqui in July last year. Justice Siddiqui, while ruling the election of Ashraf as malafide, had removed him as Chairman with immediate effect after which the government appointed Najam Sethi as acting Chairman of the board. However, the twomember bench, while restoring Ashraf, also only accepted parts of the appeal filed by the PCB against Justice Siddiqui's order to stop Sethi from exercising his full powers.

Pakistan want help from pitch against Sri Lanka

SHARJAH: Pakistan are desperate for a helpful pitch to get them a series-levelling win against Sri Lanka in the third and final Test starting in Sharjah today. Captain Misbah-ul Haq was frustrated over two previous unresponsive pitches, the first in Abu Dhabi where Sri Lanka batted resolutely to salvage a draw, and then in Dubai where a first-day seaming pitch undid Pakistan's batting and later blunted their bowling. Sri Lanka, helped by their pace attack and a fighting ton from old campaigner Mahela Jayawardne scored their biggest-ever win of nine wickets over Pakistan to take a 1-0 lead. The lack of spin on those pitches nullified Pakistan's match-winning bowler Saeed Ajmal and he has taken only five wickets in two Tests. The look of the pitch suggests it will only turn on the last two days.

Who ever used it, is happy enough to tell the world

Australian player Wilson Jason (7) celebrates with teammates after scoring the second goal against India during their match of World Hockey League Final at Major Dhyan Chand National stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

After the change of ends, the Argentines looked more organised and slowly and steadily got their footing in the match. The Argentine midfield and forwardline combined well in the second period to create a number of opportunities only to return emptyhanded. Argentina finally managed to draw parity in the 59th minute through Matias Paredes who slammed home a loose bouncing ball. Both the teams, thereafter, created chances but failed to convert them into goals to take the match into penalty shoot-out. The one-on-one shoot-out

also failed to break the deadlock as the two teams converted two opportunities each out of five shots, forcing the game into a sudden death. Both Argentina and New Zealand scored from the first attempt of the sudden death forcing to prolong the game further. However, in the next round of attempts Argentina faltered but New Zealand scored through Blair Hilton to enter the last-four stage, where they will face England on Friday. Argentina, ranked 11th in the world, will take on Belgium in the 5-8 place classification match on Friday.

Saina kept on extending it to seal it off 21-10. In the second game, Hera gave Saina some fight. It was a close battle till 6-6 before the Indian won four successive points to surge ahead and eventually had it easy in the end. Sindhu, on the other hand, fought a neck-and-neck battle till 15-15 in the opening game before she could bag three points on the trot to move ahead. Thereafter, however, there was no looking back for her. The second game was also a hard fought one and the 18year-oldWorld Championship bronze-medallist Indian came from behind to overcome her rival. Fanetri first opened up a

9-5 lead but Sindhu managed to win four points on the trot to catch up her rival at 9-9. The Indian then surged ahead with a 13-10 lead but yet again Fanetri made it 13-13. It went on like that till 1616 before the Indian raised her game when it mattered the most to enter the next round of the tournament. It was, however, a disappointing day for India in the men’s singles event. Anand Pawar failed to put up a fight against Zhengming Wang of China and went down 12-21 11-21 in 33 minutes. In contrast, Gurusaidutt showed a lot of fighting spirit before losing 18-21 21-11 21-23 to Eric Pang of the Netherlands.
