Mumbai University’s M.P.Ed students sit inside gymnasium, storeroom for their lectures

By Yatin Ingle

The varsity carries out its lectures in a store-room or gymnasium where benches have been set up. A portable black-board has been put for the teachers. A student, who did not wish to be named, says “Since the day we joined the course, our lectures are been going on inside this gymkhana-storeroom. We have also requested the varsity to allocate classrooms for us but no action has been taken yet”. On August 28, 2013, the ADC had reported that the water in the swimming pool has turned stagnant and is infested with larvae, while the bushes surrounding the pool are overgrown. The tennis court has turned into a muddy lawn and the table tennis area is being used for storage; but the varsity has not taken necessary action. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro ViceChancellor, MU said, “The varsity has already started renovating the sports complex and the classrooms will also be renovated soon”.

T

he Mumbai University (MU) has decided to renovate its sports complex but the classrooms and lecture houses in this complex still await their turn. Since 2007, the varsity has not renovated the classrooms in the sports complex, whereas the gymnasium is filled with equipments along with benches. With no other classrooms, helpless students sit alongside weights and dumbbells for their lectures and exams. In 2003, Dr. Bhalchandra Mungekar, former Vice-Chancellor, MU, had proposed a plan for a sports complex with a budget of Rs.9 crore. According to sources, as the MU completed 150 years, an amount of Rs.31 crore was added to the existing budget. Along with courts and a gymkhana, this sports complex also compromises classrooms for the course of Masters of Physical Education (M.P.Ed).

MU to mark JBIMS Hazare, MP CM Chouhan to get SIES awards students on 60 By A Staff Reporter

Varsity will mark JBIMS students who attempted a 100 marks paper, on 60 marks By Yatin Ingle

A

ffected students of the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBMIS) who were forced to attempt a 100 marks question paper, instead of a 60 marks paper, will now have less to worry about. According to the varsity, it has been decided that the students will be compensated by being marked on 60. On November 28, around 400 MBA students who were writing their first semester ‘Introduction to Computers’ exams, were given a wrong question paper of 100 marks instead of their question paper of 60 marks. When the stu-

dents brought the discrepancy to the notice of the authorities, they were told that they had to attempt the paper they were given. On Monday, December 16, the MU had scheduled a meeting of the Board of Examinations (BOE) to resolve the problem and after a discussion the BOE declared that the students will be marked on 60 marks, thus preventing any losses.

wo persons including a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator and a ward officer in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) were arrested by the Mumbai unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday afternoon for accepting a bribe to shelter

an illegal construction in Uttan near Bhayandar. According to ACB officials, the accused – who have been identified as Ashok Tiwari, an NCP corporator who heads Ward No. 1 in the MBMC, and ward officer Sunil Yadav – had demanded money from the complainant Mohammed Ashraf Aslam Qureshi, to shelter illegally con-

structed bunglows on the UttanDhavgi Road. Yadav had recently slapped a case under the relevant sections of the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act against Qureshi, and had demanded money in order to refrain from demolishing the illegal constructions. Qureshi approached the Mumbai unit of the ACB and registered a com-

plaint, following which a team led by ACP Maruti Jadhav and Chandrakant Katkar laid a trap and caught the duo red handed accepting a bribe of Rs.1.5 lakh at the ward office in Bhayandar on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the ACB team carried out search operations at Tiwari’s flat in the 90-feet road area of Bhayandar (West). It should be noted that this is the

second trap laid by the ACB in less than a week. A lady clerk attached to the local ward office in Mira Road was arrested by the ACB after she was caught red handed accepting a bribe, allegedly on behalf of her superior, to hand over a marriage certificate. The ACB team is probing the involvement of the concerned ward official.

Anna to end fast only after Wife, paramour held for murder LS passes Lokpal Bill By Suresh Golani By A Special Correspondent

S

ocial crusader Anna Hazare has made it clear that he will break his fast only after the Lokpal Bill is passed in the Lok Sabha today. Anna, who is on a hunger strike for the Lokpal Bill, was jubilant after the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha last evening. The 45-year-old long battle for the Lokpal Bill came towards an end yesterday as the Rajya Sabha passed the historic bill. The most prominent of the group of anti-graft bills on the anvil, the Lokpal Bill establishes a lokpal at the central level and asks states to establish lokayuktas in a year’s time, from the date of notification of the law. The format Anna Hazare may break his fast today.

of the lokayukta will be left to the state assemblies to decide. After the Rajya Sabha gave its nod to the Lokpal Bill, Anna addressed the crowd gathered at Ralegan Siddhi. In his speech he thanked the MPs for lending him their support. However, he refused to break his fast saying tat he will do so only after the Lok Sabha endorsed the bill. Significantly, celebrations broke out in Ralegan Siddhi the moment the Rajya Sabha sanctioned the much awaited Lokpal Bill. People came out onto the streets and started shouting slogans supporting Anna Hazare. The Indian national flag were also waved by villagers at the venue of Anna’s hunger strike. leuths of the Thane (rural) police have arrested a woman and her paramour on charges of murdering her husband in the Manvelpada area of Virar on December 13. According to the police, the body of 35-year-old Yograj Gokul Bahadur was recovered from the backyard of his tenement in Virar. After post-mortem reports confirmed that Bahadur was strangled to death, a case under sections 302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Virar police station. Investigations revealed that the

deceased had strained relations with his wife, Sujata (26), after he learnt about her extra-marital affair with Sachin Patang Bhalerao (27), a resident of Kandivli. During rounds of sustained interrogation, Sujata confessed to having her husband murdered in connivance with her paramour. “We have arrested Sujata and Sachin for the the murder. Both have been remanded to police custody till December 21, after being produced before the Sessions Court in Vasai, ” confirmed investigating officer API Asif Baig.

authorities have asked for all details, including salaries paid to all Indian staff employed in US consulates, including those working as domestic helps by the Americans families in India. To determine if they’re paying tax or not, India has also asked for visa details of all teachers at US schools in the country and what they’re being paid and details of their bank accounts. The slew of diplomatic measures has been taken to leave the US “in no doubt of seriousness of India’s concern over the issue of Devyani Khobragade.“ In an exceptionally strong stand, India is recalling all consulate personnel ID cards and made it clear that the law of strict reciprocity is in place. So if the US says that Devyani has limited immunity, a similar procedure will be applicable for US diplomats stationed in India. All import clearances for the US Embassy have also been stopped, which means American diplomats cannot import anything. There will be no special privilege to US diplomats and all of them will have to move through normal channels including immigration, customs and security check at the Indian airports. India has also withdrawn all airport passes for consulates and embassy vehicles which mean they cannot get priority treatment and will have to park their vehicles as ordinary passengers after paying the fee.

process was supposed to start yesterday. However, Kiran Pigankar filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court requesting that this historical warship be saved and suggested that it be converted into a national museum. The next hearing of the case will be held on January 16, 2014. The delegation visited IMS Vikrant at the Western Naval Command where the ship has been anchored for more than a decade. Leader of opposition in the BMC, Devendra Amberka, objected to this move saying it is not the responsibility of the civic body. He said, “The ship is anchored in the Arabian Sea so it is not in the jurisdiction of the corporation. It is the responsibility of the Centre, state government and the Navy to develop it into a museum.” Mayor Prabhu said, “The Centre and the state government have failed and so we are stepping in. In the last four fiscal budgets, we have been making a budget provision of Rs.25 crore every year (a total of Rs.100 crore). This ship is at dock and not in the Arabian Sea. It will later be put up in some open space in the jurisdiction of the corporation.”

Coincidentally, the date of his arrest was the same as the date the FIR was filed last year, after Sandhya went missing on December 13, 2012. When the police interrogated Raghuveer, he stated that his mother had left home to go to the bank and never returned, whereas the maids at home were told by Raghuveer that Sandhya was visiting her brother in Juhu. The Mumbai Crime Branch then arrested Raghuveer on the basis of suspicion and produced him in the Belapur court in Navi Mumbai yesterday, where he was remanded to police cus-

on Monday evening after the victim told her mother that she was not feeling well and that her body was hurting. Her mother then took her to a doctor to have her checked. Ponder awhile… “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” — Elie Wiesel

Lodging only a diplomatic protest is not enough T

HE way an Indian woman working in our consulate in the United States of America was treated by the police is most uncivilised and disgusting. The Indian is said to be allegedly involved in some visa ‘fraud’. The police have subjected her to painful humiliation: She has been stripsearched. A member of the diplomatic staff should not have been subjected to such most objectionable barbaric treatment. And the police have handcuffed this frail woman in public – as if she had committed a most heinous crime. And the police who do not seem to have a shred of respect for a diplomatic staff member have kept her in the lock-up along with hardened criminals. How did the Indian government react to this ugly happening? On the first day, there was total inaction. Later, a foreign minister lodged a protest. Nothing appears to have come out of this protest. India has not succeeded in getting the Indian diplomat out of that horrible situation. What is needed is a tit for tat reaction. That is not forthcoming. It is not enough if the Lok Sabha Speaker does not receive an American Congressional delegation. It is not enough Rahul Gandhi refused to see them. Compare the painful indignity to which our diplomat was subjected to and the treatment given to American Congressional delegates. Evidently those delegates were not much worried when Parliament and Indian leaders extended no cordial welcome to them. The ‘strip search’ Devyani Khobragade was subjected to, the handcuff that was put on her and her being lodged with hardened criminals need a sharp, equally humiliating tit for tat operation. President Barack Obama must have come to know about this incident but he has shown no inclination to do anything about it. The Indian government should do something more than lodging only a diplomatic protest.

AHUL GANDHI is down after the Congress party’s near total rout in the recent round of assembly elections, but he’s obviously hoping he’s not out. As chatter intensifies about a Narendra Modi versus Arvind Kejriwal face-off in 2014, the Congress heir apparent is trying desperately to stay in the fight with a makeover to shed the reluctant prince image. The latest in a series of moves crafted to affirm that he is ready to step up and take charge was a two-and-a-half hour meeting with journalists. He has met editors in the past but this time, he agreed to go down the ladder by inviting chiefs of news bureaus to join him in a freewheeling, off-the-record discussion. Congress circles are abuzz about Rahul’s latest outreach effort. Speculation is that next in line for an audience with the Gandhi scion are Congress beat correspondents who he has shunned in the past. To be fair, Rahul hasn’t wasted time after the stunning electoral humiliation. He came out with his mother to address the media on counting day. He joined the outcry against the Supreme Court’s controversial ruling against homosexuality. Last week, he addressed his first ever formal press conference in the media room at his party headquarters. And unlike his impromptu brash intervention on the government ordinance to protect convicted MPs, he stuck to the script at the presser with careful worded formulations on the government’s Lokpal bill. His mother had hinted at a change in strategy once the party’s defeat was clear. She said the name of the Congress prime minister candidate would be announced at an opportune time. A senior Congress leader indicated to journos in Parliament that the opportune time could well be January 17, soon after Makar Sankranti when the stars become favourable again. The hint set off a round of frenzied speculation that Rahul will finally take up the leadership mantle that day. Many in the Congress feel that Rahul should have started preparing the ground for his accession in 2009 when the party got second wind after an unexpected election victory. He could have ridden the momentum of that success. Should they be consoling themselves instead with the thought that it’s better late than never? Or is it a case of too little, too late?

BJP ministers faced with Hobson’s choice

T

ALKING of auspicious periods, the BJP’s newly elected chief ministers in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh rushed to be sworn in before the stars shut down for a month on December 15. Results were out on the 8th so they had barely a week in which to take charge. And they had to do it one by one so that the entire pantheon of leaders could be present at all three functions. It left the new chief ministers with no time

remember in the old time, about fifteen years ago, there was a little boy who came to Plum village in France to practice. He spent one day in the village and then two days later he liked it. There were a lot of children practicing and playing with him. So during a tea meditation, rather lemonade meditation, he said "Everything is wonderful here except one thing — there is no television." But he survived. Survived and then he continued and stayed several weeks in the village. One of his conclusions before leaving the village: that it is possible to survive without television. You can have many kinds of joy and you can nourish yourself with these joys. You don't need television. I am not against television. There are many wonderful programmes. I only call for attention because there are many programmes of television that are not very healthy to us. They bring us so many toxins. There was another boy who arrived in the

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath to complete consultations on cabinet formation. Consequently, newly elected MLAs aspiring to be ministers are faced with a Hobson’s choice. The dark period ends only after Makar Sankranti which falls on January 14. So, either they wait for a month for the stars to brighten again so that they can take oath at an auspicious time. Or, if they are in a hurry to grab ministerial berths, they will have to take the risk of assuming office during an unfavourable period. It’s a tough decision to take if you are astrologically inclined.

The wheel has comes full circle for Naidu

T

DP chief Chandrababu Naidu is desperate to join the NDA, it seems. Last week, he rushed to Delhi and was closeted with BJP president Rajnath Singh for a long time. Then,

Surviving without entertainment I

he flew to Bhopal for Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s oath taking ceremony for a third innings as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Naidu joined the entire top leadership of the BJP on the dais and then went into a closed door meeting with Narendra Modi after that. The two were locked in discussions for nearly half an hour. Whole Modi is keen to have the TDP on board so that it dilutes his image as a political untouchable, the BJP is nervous about the impact on its Andhra politics. On the one hand, an alliance with Naidu could rebound in Telangana after the TDP’s high-pitched campaign for a ‘United Andhra’. The BJP has long supported the formation of a separate state of Telangana and hopes to capitalize on this in 2014 by winning a couple of seats in the region. On the other hand, Naidu could prove a valuable ally in the secular versus communal discourse. Remember that the secular lobby once hailed Naidu as its blue-eyed boy. Ironically, Naidu quit the NDA in 2003 as a mark of protest against the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat. The wheel has come full circle.

village and he found it too quiet. Many hundred people staying here and yet too quiet and he wanted to leave right away. I think his parents had negotiated with him that if he would stay in the village for a week, then they would bring him to the seashore for two weeks. VEN as the BJP kept its fingers crossed through the ding-dong battle with Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi on counting day, it was warned by none other than an NDA ally to expect a huge surprise. Naresh Gujral of the Shiromani Akali Dal apparently declared at the NDA meeting that afternoon that AAP would not only win some 20 seats but it could effectively stop the BJP’s march to power in the city state that serves as the nation’s capital. Gujral even forecast to his bemused friends in the BJP that Kejriwal would pull off a victory against Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. He told them that he himself had voted for Kejriwal in order to defeat Dikshit because he knew that the BJP nominee Vijendra Gupta was too weak to oust her. Interestingly, Gujral cleared his voting choice with SAD boss Sukhbir Singh Badal so that there would be no blowback from the BJP. It seems that many BJP workers and polling agents also voted for Kejriwal as an anti-Sheila option. him and he liked it and he accepts to stay for another day. He was a special person to be taken care of, so other children were asked to take care of him. He got the attention of other young people and he liked it. He found that the children were very nice — kind to him. So he accepted to stay for another day and then he extended it to several days. The young man liked it and he agreed to stay for a whole week. At the end of the week, he proposed to his parents to stay on. He didn't want to go to the beach anymore. He wanted to stay in the village for two more weeks. I think it is possible to be happy without watching television a lot. Again, I want to say that I am not against television, because we can profit a lot from television. But we should have an intelligent policy. I think that the family should get together and discuss how to use the television. Everyone has to be present and we should agree on what kind of programmes we should view and what kind of programmes we should not view. I think we should have a TV magazine to find out what we can see and what we should not see. — Thich Nhat Hanh

After the disaster at Durban… AFTER losing the one-day series to a lowly placed South African side, number one Indian side is trying to win the Test series to come out of the woods. The team could not face fiery fast bowling in the shorter form of the game and is now trying to do justice in the longest form of the game. Inept batting, substandard bowling and lethargic fielding, all put paid to our hopes in an overseas series all these years. We are trying to resurrect our position in T Test match cricket after our dismal showing against MorkelSteyn combination. We are trying to satisfy ourselves and the likes of Zaheer Khan are trying to infuse confidence among the younger generation of medium fast bowlers from India. As a matter of fact, we do not have tearaway type of fast bowlers in our ranks and the present crop is trying hard but unable to penetrate the defence of the opposition. Hence, we are at the receiving end all the time and the runs scored by Team India bats-

men is not enough to save followons and innings defeats on foreign soil. It is not worth simply forgetting Durban debacle or simply trying to ooze confidence without working hard. We need a balanced side and despite having Ashwin down the order and superstars up the order, our batting line-up looks thin against genuine bowling attack. South Africa can attack with five slips and two gullys in Test cricket and with a safe wicketkeeper backing them, the task of saving the match appears very difficult for Team India. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

AFTER team India’s ‘limbu paani’ show in South Africa in the onedayers, a few limericks start swinging in my head. Here goes: We could not catch De Kock he hit knock after knock we delivered juicy half volleys and added to our follies

Gay sex ban muddle THE Congress Party has come out boldly by criticising the Supreme Court’s ban order on gay sex, but Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its primeministerial candidate Narendra Modi are silent under the fear that they do not want to embrace the RSS who have supported the Supreme Court order and consider homosexuality as a sin according to Hindu religion. The leader of the opposition, Sushma Swaraj played a double game by asking Congress to bring the proposal in the all-party meet so that the party’s double standards can be exposed. I strongly feel that if there is no consolidation among the political parties, Congress Party must bring an ordinance to support the gay community who are branded as criminals as per the SC order if they indulge in unnatural acts. It is high time the UPA government does not waste time and supports the gay community. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

2G: JPC report unjustified THE JPC report is ‘invalid’ in that the Chairman did neither allowed A. Raja the accused in the 2G scam to present his viewpoints and also did not call PM and FM to ‘depose’ as demanded by A. Raja who was the then IT Minister and ‘vehemently’ informed the JPC that he carried out the entire gamut of the sale of 2G Spectrum in the year 2007 only after discussing each act with the PM and FM and only after obtaining their consent without any ambiguity and he was in possession of sufficient proof and documentary evidence to that effect to conclusively drive home his points of view. JPC was constituted to find the truth and punish the guilty. In this process, common sense prevails that no effort could be spared and it is incumbent on the part of the JPC to give full opportunity to the accused to conclusively prove his validity. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

Kohli footage created controversy and as usual Indian management took offence to the footage and tried their best to remove it from the regular broadcast. In India we make mockery of visiting teams. I remember one such objectionable remark. When English side toured India, we mocked at Cook’s team but in the final analysis the result went their way. England, after losing the tenure of UPA-I and if only the Prime Minister had not been so dogmatic about the nuclear deal with the Americans, in all probability, the UPA-II would also have been as successful as its earlier version. Be that as it may, it is time for the age-old Congress to revamp its structure and start looking ahead optimistically — the elections are not lost until they are actually lost!

ALL’S NOT LOST: Let’s hope Team India wins the Test cricket series against S. Africa ing the first Test at Ahmedabad won the next two tests and the effort to square the series at Nagpur was nullified and we lost a home series 1-2 to England’s lions. Now, when Kohli was shown as a sitting duck against Steyn, team coach got offended and made it a point to remove the footage. Why this double standard in Indian cricket? Kohli could not score much even with his MRF bat in hand and jumping like

a jackal against South African pace attack. He was scoring runs at will against weak Sri Lanka attack in the beginning and continued to do so against weak attack and mostly when on a losing cause. When the bowling is tough and the ball bounces steeply like other Indian batsmen, even Virat Kohli was on a survival mood rather than saving the country from further disasters. — Jayanthy S. io-technology is a relatively newer term coined for the age-old domain of technological applications and systems that effectively rein in the various biological elements to create highly viable technologically enhanced products. The applications of bio-technology are quite vast which makes it a very significant field as far as educational and career prospects are concerned. However, by most accounts, despite its importance, bio-technology has remained in relative obscurity when compared to other science-related educational and career streams. Obscure though the field is, there are nonetheless certain preconceived perceptions and ideas that surround it. The most common misconception is about the fields that it covers within the ambit of biology and its value addition to the society at large. According to Dr. Rajalakshmi Amudhan, professor of biotech at SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, “Bio-technology, under its wing, includes bio-chemistry, botany, micro-biology, zoology, bio-genetics, animal and cell culture and even bio-informatics. Bio-technology because of these underlying aspects is thus also referred to as bio-engineering. As

I cleared my HSC in 2009 and then lost interest in studies. Now, after realising the importance of studies, I want to know if I can do an MBA. Should I do it through correspondence or a regular college? —Sandeep Savla

Kindly understand that to get an admission in an MBA course, the minimum eligibility criteria is a Graduation in any stream. Thus in your case, you need to first complete your graduation and then opt for an MBA. If you cannot pursue a regular course due to responsibilities and financial issues, you can take up a distance learning course. If there are no constraints, then you can think of a full time course.

I am currently studying in XII (Commerce), and I want to work in Banking or in Financing. Should I opt for a diploma or a course, after my HSC? If course, then which one should I go for? —Michelle Fernandes

There are courses like B.Com or Bachelors in Accounting & Finance/ Banking & Insurance/ Financial Markets that can be taken up after your HSC. Also, there are Diploma courses available in Finance, Banking, and Import Export Management and so on. The choice of course will be your personal decision. However, completing a minimum graduate level qualification can increase one’s chances of getting a desired job.

Bio-tech traverses across sciences Continued from pg 13 «

far as the its contribution to day-to-day life is concerned, since bio-technology is all about utilising technology with a view to create an end product that extrapolates the intrinsic value of the basic biological system taking it to a higher level with a view to enhance mankind’s quality of life; its significance and applicability become wider facets that can never be overlooked.” The educational paradigm of bio-technology deals with teaching students the various branches of biology so as to make them cognizant with the basic entailing of each separate biological science. This also enables students to get a better idea about further specialisation options with the biotech framework for them to potentially continue higher studies and to choose their career choices within the field. “As an educational field, bio-tech goes across sciences. While working in labs, students get an idea about these sciences at the cell and molecular level which further refines their knowledge for higher studies and for jobs and careers,”explains Dr. Amudhan, who herself has a doctorate in micro-biology. When it comes to studying bio-tech, yet another misconception follows about lesser returns for those doing bio-tech in India vis-àvis those doing it from universities abroad. Speaking about this, Dr. Amudhan states that while it doesn’t matter where one studies bio-tech from; it really makes a difference

when it comes to the R&D (Research and Development) aspect of the field. “It depends on the mindset. If one wants India to come to the fore as far as pioneering bio-tech systems and standardised products are concerned; then one cannot do R&D abroad, but needs to be present here to take up the challenge,” she clarifies. There are quite a few reputed universities and institutes that offer degree, postgraduate and doctoral studies in bio-technology. These include the likes of IITs which offer MSc. in Bio-tech and BITS Pilani which offers MSc. MTech in the field. In addition to these, there are also several other universities that offer BTech in bio-technology. With regard to doctoral studies and research, there are several IISERs (Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research) which offer doctoral studies in bio-tech to interested individuals. In addition to these IISERs, even the IITs and other leading Indian universities offer doctoral studies in bio-technology. Career avenues in bio-technology include arenas like agriculture (green bio-technology), medicine (red bio-technology), marine and aquatics (blue bio-technology) and industry (white bio-technology). But Dr. Amudhan cautions that despite there being a growing demand for professionals hailing from bio-technology background, the field cannot be expected to grow as fast as the IT sector on account of the continuous mutation of the biological organisms and micro-organisms.

Elaborating she adds, “There is enough scope for having fruitful careers in bio-technology as companies are constantly on the look-out for qualified bio-technologists. There is an adequate rise in demand for research work too with bio-technological hubs in Bengaluru and Hyderabad thriving as ever. But one has to understand that when one is working with organisms, the time-line of the creation of the desired endproduct is subject to change.” At the end of the day, however, despite

“Bio-tech gives a broader and thorough outlook and keeps one up-to-date as compared to other courses in the field of science. Students tend to become more informed about all biological sciences since bio-technology covers almost all biological studies under its umbrella. Presently, education choices in bio-tech have increased greatly, especially at the doctoral level. Newer institutes like the IISERs which have come up are ensuring that there is absolute focus given on active research in the subject.”

these changes and fluctuations, bio-technological systems have gone on to further emphasise the qualitative scientific development that India has managed to achieve in the 60-odd years of its independence in a field that has otherwise been mainly dominated by western countries.

Some of the universities that offer a Masters in Forensic Psychology in the UK are Birmingham City University, University of Kent, University of Leicester and University of Portsmouth. In all these universities, this degree is offered on a full time basis, which usually takes one year to complete. When it comes to entry requirements, while it is not a requirement to have work experience before you apply for your Masters course in U.K., it is advisable to have at least done an internship before you apply. This will not only strengthen your application but will also give you an insight into what specific field under the umbrella of Psychology you would like to apply to. If English is not your

first language, you must provide evidence of competence in English language in the form of an IELTS/ TOEFL score. The U.K. requires between 60-70 per cent from your undergraduate degree for this course. Along with the application form, you will also need to provide two letters of reference from higher education academic institutions of your latest degree. I want to do my Masters in Archaeology in the UK. Do I need to take any specific entrance test? - Tia

The tests are specific to the course to which you are applying. Archaeology does not have a subject specific test. The Standard English language requirement – TOEFL/IELTS is essential if English is not your first language. For a Masters in Archaeology you will be required to have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of 75 per cent in your Bachelors degree. Along with the application, you also need to submit your BA in Archaeology or equivalent degree. Some other documents that you may require are a Statement of Purpose and Letters of Recommendation.

ne of my favourite places to eat cheap and tasty Mughlai food has always been Food Inn in Colaba. There’s nothing fancy about the place, it’s pretty simple with two seating areas – A/C and Non A/C. Some of the good stuff they make here is Chicken Afghani a boneless chicken dish and Chicken Lazeez. Their Chinese is also simple and nice, but I’d stick to the Mughlai as it is pretSrilakshmi Kurup ty good and cheap. An average meal would set you back by only around Rs.300.

hristmas is both a religious festival and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form

the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church and sharing meals with family and friends. W.C. Jones said, “Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is the good you do to yourself.” Presently Christmas has become a commercial enterprise, with

too much emphasis on shopping and buying. Christmas is not really about enjoying fine food with family and friends. In fact the true meaning of Christmas is to spread the joy all around you which is missing presently. Santa Claus is perhaps the most remarkable of all the figures associated with Christmas. To us, Santa has always been an essential part of the Christmas celebration, and a person to whom all the children look up to every year. This time it’s our

chance to spread the essence of Christmas with those who are oblivious of Christmas. So let us all come together and celebrate Christmas in its true sense. Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Saviour and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world.

have done my B.Com, Law and CS inter from 1995 till 2000. My BCom was from NM College of Commerce, and I pursued Law from Mithibai College. These are the best colleges in Mumbai and their reputation, fame and brand names count. On the first day of college I was so anxious and excited but at the same time a little nervous about being ragged, since it happened very often at that time. It was a great feeling to go to a new educational institute and start college life and I loved that I got admission on my own merit. Yes, I was ragged, but in a very innocent way because people were ragged in a friendly way in those days. Initially, I was a very shy guy and did not talk much to people. So my seniors made me talk to senior girls and give them greeting cards, as well as talk to the Rose Queen. My professors were really helpful. I adored my economics teacher. She was beautiful and I loved the way she taught us. I was poor in economics but always attended her class. I cannot say it was a crush, but I definitely had a soft corner for her. Whatever your professors teach you remains in your mind for a long time if the professors are good. One goes on learning forever, but learning in college is different. I liked studying and was decent in all subjects but I was not good in mathematics and economics. I lived in Vile Parle but when I secured admission in NM College I had shifted to Kandivali, so I travelled by local trains for five years. That was an experience. Trains are the life line of Mumbai

That was the only time I was called into the principal’s cabin and both of us were not allowed to enter college for one week. It was really the most embarrassing moment of my college life. Another memory that I will not forget is when I was late for my team selection in cricket in the first year of college. I somehow went and convinced the cricket selection committee and coach to take me in by talking about my past records in school about cricket and my passion for the game. I was not selected that year, but the next year when the selection team was selecting three extra players, I made it a point to be in the team even as player 12 or 13. They made me bowl in the selection for almost the whole day and the coach was so impressed with my performance that the next day I saw my name in the first 11 instead of being just an extra or standby. Speech-language problems result in behavioural disorders as well as reading and writing difficulties, thus impacting receptive and expressive skills. Speech-language therapy will help your child. izvi Education Society, has launched India’s maiden ‘Cent Per Cent Voter Registration Campaign’ which envisages the registration of each of its students who fulfill the eligibility criteria in the electoral rolls of the country. Rizvi Education has over 18,000 students enrolled with its institutes. The pilot exercise targets achieving greater student participation in the electoral process of the world’s largest democracy. The previous year, the college had run a voter awareness campaign titled, ‘Largest Democracy Lowest Voting’ that was aimed at encouraging the youth to participate in big numbers in the BMC elections that were round the corner. The campaign ran for nine days and comprised flash mobs, street plays, extempore debates and other activities that were conducted across the streets of Mumbai. It has been observed that only 15-20 per cent citizens in the age group of 18-19 are registered voters. And from among registered voters below 21 years of age, very few actually turn up to vote. This is a major lacuna that needs immediate correction.

Here’s a list of things you should consider before opting for an education loan writes Neeraj Saxena, CEO, Avanse Education Loans

12 things to know before going for an Education Loan A

n education loan is an attractive prospect for those aspiring to fulfil their dreams of pursuing higher studies. Though Education finance has been a stepping stone for many deserving students to accomplish their dreams over the years, some common doubts and ambiguities remain over process challenges, repayment, processing fees, course of choice and financing, and so on. Given below are 12 quick points that will help you understand education loans better. This will enable you make the best of this proposition and choose from the best available options in the market. Before opting for an education loan, the first thing to do is to assess your current available funds. Funding through scholarships, for example, would reduce your upfront loan burden considerably. Once you have shortlisted your choice of programme and Institute/University, speak to the Institute on the scholarship options that you can avail. This applies to universities in India as well as abroad. Are you eligible for an Education Loan? This is an important question that needs to be answered. It can be easily checked on the internet through an Eligibility Calculator. In addition to this, the Eligibility Calculator will help you determine the approximate eligibility value. Check if the Institute that you have applied to has any association or affiliation with banks or NBFCs for education loans. This affiliation expedites loan processing. Specialist education loan providers offer special financing solutions for specific Institutes, with conces-

sions in rate of interest and other benefits like easy and quick processing of the loan. Look up for information on your institution, its placement history, average remuneration for campus placements and earning potential after completion of your course. Education financing institutions take the expected future income into consideration to arrive at the loan eligibility. Do a rough calculation on the expected monthly income you are likely to draw as a fresh employee and deduct your average living expenses so that you can plan your loan repayment and other expenses. Don’t just concentrate on your school’s overall ranking or graduation rate as starting salaries greatly influence the loan repayment period. After you have decided on the actual amount of loan required, identify a Loan Provider who would not only meet your requirements in terms of the loan amount but also agree to fund your choice of programme. There are lenders who can provide you 100 per cent loan amount without any margin money. Certain NBFCs can provide loan as high as Rs.100 lakh or Rs.1 crore. Check the expenses covered within the loan amount i.e. whether the loan covers complete tuition fees and living expenses for the entire duration of the programme. For example, ascertain whether components like cost of books and study materials, insurance amount and travelling expenses are included in the loan. Explore whether one’s parental income will suffice to meet the eligibility criteria or an additional co-borrower would be required. Do you have sufficient collateral security

« MENTOR’S DESK

like House, Flat, non-agricultural land or Fixed Deposit, to support the loan? It is important to remember that collateral security is always preferable since it also ensures a comparatively better rate of interest. Compare not only the rate of interest but also other benefits in terms of easy repayment options, flexibility to pay from abroad, online customer services etc. from your loan provider. Obtain a checklist from the lender beforehand and prepare all the necessary papers and documents to ensure expedition of the process. This will help you and also the lender in taking quick decisions, and thereby process the loan. Generally, documents required for any education loan are KYC, educational qualifications, proof of income (of parents) and collateral security document copies. Decide the repayment option in consultation with your parents. That is, if you want to start EMI, or simple interest or want to go for moratorium. If you start simple interest payment or monthly installments, it will reduce the burden once you graduate. It is advised not to go for moratorium unless required since it adds to the burden. Know the terms of your loan - what is the interest rate, what is the repayment period, and when precisely will the payments begin. More importantly, find out what your expected monthly payment will be upon graduation. Note: It is important to know and understand that any default in EMI payments reflect in your credit report, lowering your credit score for any future borrowings. Another important point to remember is that if parents co-sign on the loans, they are liable for the loan.

A NEW ANGLE

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2013

Up until now, commercial photography was always a backbencher until the advent of online retail. Professional Photographer Surya Chaturvedi talks to Naressa Coutinho about product photography as a new and evolving career option for aspiring photographers

T

he latest buzzwords have to begin with ‘E’ and these often refer to everything electronic or online. E-paper, E-banking, E-book and E-commerce are minions to the World Wide Web helping popular brands, niche labels and Pureplay set-ups (Amazon.com, Flipkart.com etc.) make impressive profit margins as opposed to physical stores. Buying and selling in an electronic set-up defines E-commerce and E-tailing that has triggered a wide range of employment opportunities that require equally e-skilled professionals. As online buying and selling depends on virtual products – ones that you may only see or experience through photographs and content that may accompany them, an attractive profession that comes to surface is that of Product Photography. Already in the hammock is Surya Chaturvedi, a professional photographer who was first introduced to product photography at Provogue India Ltd. He says, “My first ever assignment on Product Photography was shooting a Timewear campaign for Provogue, which was published in different National & International magazines. That was my stepping-stone into this and later on, I joined an e-commerce company as an in-house fashion and product photographer. I believe that product photography for e-commerce stores is an upcoming and promising field, what with the splurge of online retail outlets and the e-commerce industry as a whole. It is definitely going to be the next big thing in photography.” When you make an online purchase of a product, you first look at the images and simply scroll until you find the most visually appealing one. Most retail sites provide an option for zoom with product shots from various angles; some others even give you a 360-degree view of the product; or even come with a USP quotient that lures the buyer into clicking ‘Buy’. While it may seem like an easy task to click pictures of a stationary object, it is not. “It is <<Surya quite a multi-faceted job,” Chaturvedi says Surya, “The challenge of product photography is to bring another dimension of emotion in inanimate objects. Therefore, a product shoot entails allowing the natural environment and the product speak to you without any imposed artificiality. In order to bring out the best in the product, a photographer needs to ensure optimum lighting and shooting in the right background.” While there are a few colleges and schools that teach product photography, it is better to learn the art of photography as a general science that may take a minimum of three months or a maximum of three years, depending on the institute. As a photographer, one must always be an all-rounder. “Like it is with any profession that you specialise in, you close your options for other avenues and thus limit yourself to only learning what that specific domain has to offer. However, the advantage of specialising

in product photography is that you create a brand for yourself in that area, such as my mentor Avinash Gowarikar has created for himself in celebrity and fashion photography,” he explains. A single product shot will either entice a buyer or repel him in a millisecond; therefore, a product photographer needs to understand all the various aspects of shooting a visually appealing picture even if it is of a basic pair of scissors or shorts. “Photography skills,” says Surya, “include an active imagination, visualisation of projecting the product in its best yet natural state, and a little of business acumen because, in product photography, you need to bring out the product’s USP. To achieve this, you would require basic photography tools. Equipment may vary from product to product but in essence, you require a good camera kit, lights, tents and a photo-editing tool such as Photoshop.” The main question for every photographer is whether he wishes to be an in-house photographer on the payroll or a freelancer, working on assignments. “There are many ways to look at this question and nothing is set in stone,” says Surya, “It is a subjective choice. I personally would prefer to freelance and work for a wide array of e-stores as it gives me freedom and exposure.” One would have to take into account the monetary benefits as well, when making this decision. While an in-house photographer could make anything close to Rs.50,000 or even Rs.3,00,000 per month, the pay for a freelancer is assignment based. However, a photographer is often judged by his prior work in the field, his mentors and portfolio and Surya urges all budding photographers to go beyond their course work and intern with a good mentor to gain knowledge and perspective. At first, one shouldn’t expect immediate returns and he or she must be

ready to learn and work hard. With adequate experience under your belt, he says one can then demand more and negotiate better. Christmas is coming and it’s a time to give and share. There’s a lot you can do at this special time of the year. The question is what will you choose to do? Will you be charitable this season and help someone out in need? I think Christmas is a very cheerful season and hence this season I want to contribute as much happiness as I can. There’s always carol singing which we’ve been doing in coffee shops, church and we will be doing in some homes. The small things always count like making someone’s day by giving them gifts or chocolates! The most important thing is going out of your way to make someone smile this season! It’s a beautiful time to do that. —Nisha Idicula, Account Executive

Parle station.

Usually we play secret Santa at home and buy gifts for loved ones. We also keep packets of bread and biscuits in the car and give them to anybody who may need them. It is better than giving money, anyway. My dad also organizes a caterer who makes a wholesome meal and feeds the less privileged near

Christmas is definitely a time to give, a season of cheer and spreading happiness and joy. Every year I try to do something positive, whether it’s for my family or people around. I give money to the poor through the year, which I do at this time of the season as well. I make it a point to bring all my loved ones together and make sure everyone spends time with each other. A very Merry Christmas to one and all. Please make sure all of you take some time to do something for others. There is no joy like the joy of giving. —Albana Khatri Training Manager

A TIME FOR GIVING?

ach of us is living in this technological world. We are all running towards professionalism, perfection, money and success. Each of us is trying to make the best use of life through adding up more of everything. We live in democracy, each one is free. The biggest problem in this sense is that we have forgotten what FREEDOM means. Freedom is not using a person, it’s not robbing a woman of her rights, it’s not being insensitive towards people. On December 16 last year, the Delhi rape incident shook us. How many of us remember this? We all know how painful it is. We keep talking about making stricter laws each minute but do we seriously question our conscience? Everyone is talking about politics, sports and what not; none of us can realise the insensitivity that we carry. Even the younger lot doesn’t feel the pain. “I don’t care,” or “Let him go to hell,” has become the most repetitive line of any conversation. Does the life of a girl mean just this? Where did the leaders go who promised that no such crime shall ever happen? Why has there been such an increase in the number of crime cases? My question is simple and straight - Do my countrymen really want to celebrate the birth of a girl child in their

the road in the worst state and people didn’t come forward for help. Who knows, if anyone would’ve helped her earlier, she would be alive today! Do we realise the atrocities that she must have undergone? Lighting candles, sitting at home and crying is not a solution. In a country that worships all forms of Parvati, is this what the youth learns? Parents even teach their children to ‘not indulge in anything’. Even if there’s an accident on the road, we say ‘police ke jhamele mein kyon padega’? Why are juvenile delinquencies rising? If a person is wrong, punish him. If a person at 17 can be this brutal; how insolent will he be when he is 70? I don’t want any promise from the netas saying they’ll ensure this and that. I want the surety of life that I ought to get. Everyone needs to unite to battle against this social evil. All we need to promise this day is that – ‘I shall not tolerate anything against my countrymen. I shall live my life to the fullest with guts and gumption. Youths, especially must realise that there’s a lot boyfriend is at fault? Why do more than lust. We must people feel the need to talk or ensure the strictest punishcomment on anybody’s char- ment for crimes against acter? I still remember the women. The youth should things that she uttered - rise against atrocities. This “Don’t kill them at a go. Burn shall be my promise for the them alive.” Do we realise new year: ‘I shall not tolerate when a person says that? That any nonsense against my girl on that night was lying on people’.

rofessional architect from Parsee Colony Dadar, Mumbai, Adil Writer goes with the flow and deviates from architecture to pottery and painting and returns to Mumbai after a residency in Japan where he exhibits his ceramics , sculptures and paintings while explaining his shift from ‘boring’ architectural plans to that which makes his heart sing, like pottery and painting. Secrets & Lies is an exhibition that really began in Shigaraki Park, Japan where he learned the art of pottery from Ray Meeker and other local potters and then culminating here in Mumbai. He spoke to Francis H D’Sa about his journey. FD: Why did you switch from architecture to painting and pottery? AD: Well, in India, from the plan to construction stage is a long long time. I was getting bored. So, the switch. FD: Why the title ‘Secrets and

Lies’? When I held this exhibition in Japan, it was whispered to me that in Japan, no one has secrets and therefore no lies, which I didn’t agree to at all. So whey were the ceramic books closed? Maybe hiding a secret? So I did a few open books , a few with windows opening to the skies, some six inches thick and some three feet tall. FD: Please elaborate on this exhibition. Well, there’s the pottery series, the paintings and the bucket (sculpture) series. FD: When do you paint? All these paintings were done at night. I love the way the colors change at day time and leaving it to chance. The ‘barcode’ series is based on Chinese consumerism which I will do a presentation later and is called the Shodo series. FD: Tell us about the ‘bucket series’. Well, I really keep it quite simple. I make a mould from

Actually these were made for the International bucket show in Chennai and the collection here is quaint and simple. There are 25 paintings and 75 ceramic works. The pot-

tery that I did at Auroville is very functional, easy to use and reasonably priced. In fact all my work is reasonably priced, as I like people to take my work home. In conclusion, this is a riveting, visual extravaganza, that pushes the aesthetic envelope, even though there is still the lingering influence of Writer’s architectural learnings….. The show is at Gallery Art & Soul till December 18.

But a few sessions on the wheel did the magic. “I am in love with clay. It has completely changed my life. At the age when people get into 'senior bracket' and wonder what to do with life, I

am engaged in creation, mesmerised by clay. My work though started with wheel has shifted to hand building. I enjoy the freedom offered by pinching, coiling and slab building techniques. My work is driven by the idea of pushing myself and clay beyond set boundaries. There is nothing the clay cannot do. The only limit is the artist's imagination.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (December 18, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (December 17, 2013) a net 15.65 points (0.25%) and closed at the 6139 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6178 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6190 points level at 9.31 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.10 p.m. It then declined into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6133 points level at 3.09 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. CRISIL Research has assigned a CRISIL IER fundamental grade of 3/5 to Dhunseri Petrochem and Tea Ltd (Dhunseri). The grade indicates that the company’s fundamentals are `good’ relative to other listed equity securities in India. Our fair value of the stock is Rs187 per share. At the current market price of Rs110 per share, our valuation grade is 5/5 indicating that the market price has a ‘strong upside’ from the current levels. The grades are not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold the graded instrument, or a comment on the graded instrument’s future market price or its suitability for a particular investor. The assigned fundamental grade reflects Dhunseri’s established position in the domestic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) market. Being a dominant PET player with a large capacity, Dhunseri is well able to cater to the increase in demand for PET. Unique qualities of PET and strong growth in end-user industries such as FMCG, beverages and pharma have increased the demand for PET. Dhunseri is expanding its capacity to cater to this growth. The grade is constrained by the industry’s cyclical nature and the current oversupply situation; spreads of PET resins are likely to be under pressure because of the latter. Further, Dhunseri is exposed to forex risk. Though it follows a hedging policy for export sales, it does not hedge for mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) imports. The company also has foreign currency loan which is unhedged and the quantum of external commercial borrowings is set to increase to fund the expansion plan. The grade has taken into consideration the challenge faced by the company in Egypt; political instability and uncertainty have already led to a delay of more than six months in the commissioning of the plant. Continuous social unrest and political instability may pose a threat to smooth functioning of its operations. Financial outlook: CRISIL Research estimates Dhunseri’s revenues to increase at a two-year CAGR of 66% to Rs67.5 bn in FY15 driven by revenues from capacity expansion at plants in Haldia and Egypt. EBITDA margin is estimated to expand by 100 bps to 7.3% in FY15 from 6.3% in FY13 driven by an improvement in PET spreads from the current levels. Adjusted PAT is estimated to increase to Rs1,758 mn in FY15 from Rs629 mn in FY13 due to healthy revenue growth and improvement in operating margin. EPS is estimated at Rs50.2 for FY15. Valuation: CRISIL Research has used the discounted cash flow method to value Dhunseri and arrived at a fair value of Rs187 per share. At this value, the implied P/E multiple is 3.7x FY15E EPS.

HDFC Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Liberty Shoes CMP: Rs. 99

Target Rs. 125

LSL is engaged in manufacturing & selling leather & non-leather footwear. It is the only Indian company which is amongst the world’s top 5 manufacturers of leather footwear, producing over 50,000 pairs of footwear a day (in peak season). Its products are marketed across the globe through ~150 distributors, ~425 exclusive showrooms & over 6000 multi-brand outlets. LSL’s consolidated net sales & PAT could grow at a CAGR of 21.9% & 59.3% over FY13-15. Growth is likely to be driven by distribution expansion, penetration into low presence / untapped markets, new launches, incremental revenues from new stores & robust industry outlook. OPM is likely to improve due to stability in raw material prices and cost rationalisation. Low footwear consumption in India, increasing household income, change in consumption habits provide immense growth opportunities for the industry. Being an established player, LSL is likely to benefit immensely from the robust industry outlook. Over next 2-3 years, LSL has plans to open up ~50 stores per year across the cities. While maintaining focus on its key markets (north & south), LSL also plans to expand its reach to low presence / untapped regions. Timely ramp up could enable LSL to expand its reach & boost its revenues & profits. Implementation of TOC program over last few years has helped LSL to attract new channel partners (ensuring higher ROI) & expand its reach. In future, LSL could continue to benefit from this approach. Minority shareholder friendly restructuring of financial arrangements with group companies, if proposed could result in value unlocking, add value to brand, valuation re-rating and boost profits. It would enable LSL to rope in a PE investor to fund its expansion plans. Consolidation of retail operations would result in operational efficiencies. Shareholder friendly initiatives & sustained growth in turnover & profits could narrow LSL’s discount in valuations to its peers Bata India & Relaxo. We feel investors could buy this stock at current levels and average it on dips in the price band of Rs. 83-87 for a price target of Rs. 125 (15xFY15E EPS) over the next one to two quarters. Any news on the progress on restructuring of group companies could result in substantial re-rating.

Sebi To Overhaul Corporate Governance Code For Listed Firms

to grant greater oversight by minority shareholders and independent directors and check any unjustifiable payments to related parties. It has also proposed to introduce a new concept of ‘Corporate Governance Rating’ by independent agencies to monitor the level of compliance by the listed companies, in addition to regular inspection by Sebi and stock exchanges. While Sinha did not disclose the details of final set of regulations in this regard, he said that corporate governance has been one of the key focus areas for Sebi over the past one year and the regulator is looking to further enhance the compliance standards of listed companies. While Sebi has already taken a number of steps in areas of corporate governance and investor protection, the next step would be putting in place final norms emanating from the draft regulations proposed in January this year, he added.

The 54-page discussion paper also talked about a greater alignment of CEO salaries with the performance and goals of the company, as also a mandatory disclosure of ratio of remuneration paid to the each of their directors and their median staff salary. Similar provisions have been made in the new Companies Act. The paper said that “on average, the remuneration paid to CEOs in certain Indian companies is far higher than the remuneration received by their foreign counterparts and there is no justification available to that effect”. Through these measures, Sebi is seeking to adopt better global practices without increasing the cost of compliances, so that confidence of the investors is brought back to market. On various steps taken by Sebi, Sinha said the regulator has provided clarity on many issues concerning corporate governance and investor protection.

The code is being put in place after taking into account public comments to draft corporate governance norms released by capital markets regulator Sebi earlier this year as well as the related provisions in the new Companies Act, 2013. “The new Companies Act has brought in a new dimension and a lot of clarity from corporate governance point of view,” Sebi Chairman U K Sinha told PTI. “Our discussion paper on corporate governance is already in public domain for quite some time. ndia has given Cyprus two months to provide information on certain funds flowing from the island nation before deciding on whether to roll back suspension of tax benefits on investments made from there. “We have sought information on some investments made from Cyprus to India under the double taxation avoidance agreement and given them two months time,” a top Finance Ministry official said. Depending upon the information provided, the official said the government “will take a decision on suspension of tax pact with Cyprus”. India and Cyprus had entered into a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) in 1994. But in November this year, India classified the island nation as a notified jurisdictional area and suspended the tax benefits. Following the notification, all payments made to Cyprus attracted a 30 per cent withholding tax and Indian entities receiving money from there were required to disclose

the source of funds. India took the decision to withdraw tax benefits on grounds that Cyprus was not providing information requested by tax authorities under the taxation treaty. “Cyprus was not cooperating till we classified them as notified jurisdiction. They came running. Now we have given them the long end of the rope. Let us wait and watch,” the official added. Recently, Cyprus said that the Indian government has agreed to withdraw a notification that suspended tax benefits for investments from the island nation. The withdrawal is subject to Cyprus, one of the main sources of foreign direct investment into India, adopting the global convention on exchange of tax information. In a recent statement on renegotiation of the existing DTAA (Double Tax Avoidance Agreement), Cyprus also said a new tax treaty is expected to be finalised soon. Cyprus also said it would adopt provisions of Article 26 of the OECD Model Tax Convention relating to exchange of information in a new DTA between the two countries.

M

UMBAI: Forced to follow on, Odisha fought hard to earn a draw against Mumbai as Natraj Behera scored his second century of the match on the fourth and final day of their Group A Ranji Trophy tie here. The visitors, who resumed on 115 for two in their second innings, 130 runs behind Mumbai's first innings total of 501, batted sensibly to deny the hosts an outright win. At stumps on day four, Odisha were 356 for five with Natraj and Sujit Lenka (0 not out) on the crease. Natraj, who hit 130 in the first innings, once again showed good application as he rescued his team by scoring an unbeaten 127 off 218 deliveries, laced with 17 fours and three sixes. Starting the day on 20, Natraj survived a drop catch when he was on 61 by Wasim Jaffer off Pravin Tambe bowling. He used it to good effect and helped his team remain unbeaten at the close of play. Natraj also put on a solid 147run stand with Niranjan Behera for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed in the fifth over after lunch. Niranjan, who too got a reprieve when he was on 28, made a patient 206-ball 59. His knock comprised of nine boundaries, including the one he struck to bring up his half century. Still nine runs short of equalising Mumbai's total when Niranjan departed, Natraj and captain Biplab Samantray shared a 64-run partnership to take the total to 300. Samantray, who struck two fours and a six during his 68-ball 27, got out with the visitors on

Natraj Behera salvaged a draw for Odisha against Mumbai with a valiant unbeaten 127 for his side at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. 300 for four. Abhilash Mallick played a cameo with a quickfire 40, which included seven fours and a six. From 352 for five, Natraj and wicketkeeper-batsman Lenka kept the rival bowlers at bay for a couple of overs till play was called off after the mandatory overs. The defending champions Mumbai, who were seeking their fourth outright victory, were hurt by their young side's inept bowling that was complimented by poor fielding. Tambe, who had picked up two wickets yesterday, was unlucky today after two catches were dropped off his bowling. He finished with figures

Mary Kom is a great girl: Holyfield

NEW DELHI: Five-time world champion and Olympic bronzemedallist Indian woman boxer M C Mary Kom has a new admirer in American legend Evander Holyfield, who says he follows her exploits and finds her achievements great. "Yes, I follow her. She is a great girl. I find her very great because it is amazing how this young woman in India is doing boxing

which is considered an American game. It's great that she is doing well," the former 'Undisputed World Champion' told PTI outside the Parliament while participating in pre-Christmas celebrations for an organisation. Mary Kom, a Khel Ratna awardee, is currently taking a break from the ring after giving birth to her third child earlier this year. The 30-year-old Manipuri was once described as 'Magnificent Mary' by the International Boxing Association (AIBA). Holyfield, a former professional star who won the 1984 Olympics' heavyweight bronze medal, does take interest in Indian boxing. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he sat through the semifinal bout of Vijender Singh, who went on to become India's first boxing medallist in the quadrennial extravaganza. Asked if he would promote boxing in India, Holyfield said, "Nobody has asked me to do that but if somebody asks me, I will be happy to do it."

of 33-8-127-2. Javed Khan, Vishal Dabholkar and Siddhesh Lad took wicket a piece. Mumbai secured three points from this match for a total of 23 points from six games, but have slipped a place from top of the table. Odisha, meanwhile, have gained a solitary point for their effort. Brief Scores: Mumbai: 501 for nine decl (Wasim Jaffer 143, Hiken Shah 170; Basant Mohanty 3/73, Dhiraj Singh 3/117) drew with Odisha: 256 (Natraj Behera 130, Biplab Samatray 39; Javed Khan 4/53, Shardul Thakur 3/54) & 356 for 5 (Natraj Behera 127 not out, Niranjan Behera 59; Pravin Tambe 2/127).

J&K THRASH ASSAM BY 9 WKTS JAMMU: Pacer Samiullah Beigh grabbed four wickets in an impressive bowling spell on the fourth and final morning to set up Jammu and Kashmir's ninewicket victory over Assam here. Beigh claimed all the four Assam wickets that fell today to end with innings figures of 6 for 42, his first five-for in this Ranji season. Riding on Beigh's early onslaught, J&K skittled Assam out for 195 before the home side batsmen chased down the target of 32 runs to give them their fourth win in six games. Assam began the fourth and final day on a slippery 156 for 6 and they would have hoped to find a way to salvage a draw. Instead, Beigh struck between the 46th and 54th overs to bundle the visiting side out. Assam's second innings lasted just 10.4 overs today and they added 39 runs at the expense of four wickets. TN EARN THREE POINTS FROM A DRAW AGAINST RAILWAYS NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu earned three points from the drawn encounter against Railways with a first-innings lead after only 14 overs of play was possible on the fourth and final day of their Group B Ranji Trophy match. Tamil Nadu scored 246 in their first innings and then bundled out Railways for a meagre 169 to take a 77-run lead. Resuming on 10 for one in their second innings, Tamil Nadu could take the field only after lunch today because of fog and play lasted a little over an hour before bad light interrupted once again.

Agrawal, playing with a -300 handicap, got off to a good start, aided by breaks of 50, 38 and 28 that kept him ahead and well in control. But Surve, playing with a -70 handicap, changed the script

brilliantly with the crucial half century break and the 36 in the end that proved decisive. The first half was goalless but, Star of Canara SC displayed attacking skills in the second half by scoring four goals and also ensuring that they kept a clean sheet at the final whistle. Along with Sheldon's hat trick, Haresh Golar chipped in with a goal for Star of Canara SC. The other match of the day between Kanara Bros SC and Bombay Fort SC turned out to be a tame goalless draw. Tabhane continues to dominate 300m event

MUMBAI: National champion Nikhilesh Tabhane continued to prove that he is miles ahead of competition when he comfortably retained his men’s Rink 3 Time Trial (300m) title in the 51st National Roller Sports Championship – Speed at the Ameya Classic International Roller Skating Rink in Virar. The 22-year-old, who has been adopted by the Ameya Classic Club for further training and exposure, stopped the close at 25.65sec to clinch the gold medal a good three-tenth of a second ahead of second placed Akash Aradhya of Karnataka. The bronze went to Akhil Solmon Geddam of Andhra Pradesh. Nigerian XI overcome Central Railway to book semi-final berth

MUMBAI: Nigerian XI beat Central Railway 54 via tie-breaker to book their place in the elite division semi-final of the Kalina MLA Cup held at the Air India Colony ground, Santacruz on Monday. The All African lineup were comprised of players plying their trade in India and were surprisingly held at 1-1 on regulation time by the Railmen. Unfortunately though, their finishing was disappointing as both teams headed into breather with 0-0. Start of the second half saw Nigerian XI taking a surprise lead, striker Akuma D converting a brilliant through ball by Munachi M.

Windies Shillingford ‘gutted’ over ban: Coach Gibson

WELLINGTON: West Indies spinner Shane Shillingford is "gutted" at being banned for using an illegal bowling action but hopes to return to international cricket soon, national coach Ottis Gibson said in New Zealand. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced late Monday that Shillingford had been banned indefinitely after an independent biomechanical analysis showed his action was illegal. The tests also found Shillingford's team-mate, Marlon Samuels, was delivering an illegal quicker ball, although his standard off-break was within the rules.

N

EW DELHI: Disappointed with the state of Indian hockey right now, three-time Olympic gold-medallist and former captain Balbir Singh (Sr) feels among the current lot of players, only Sardar Singh would have found a place in the Indian teams that competed in the golden era. In an interaction with PTI journalists, Balbir spoke of his utter dejection at the game's current state and the issues plaguing Indian hockey. "Sardar Singh is the only player of that standard. Not all of them. Had other players been as good as Sardar Singh, then they would have been somewhere at the top," Balbir said of the halfback,

Revered as the greatest centre forward to have played the game after the iconic Dhyan Chand, Balbir said the current set of players don't have the skills to match the ones who made India an eight-time Olympic gold-medallist. "If they had the skills, they would have won. They can be at the top again. Practice is the only key, not only schemes, not

only money, the players need to develop individual skills, and practice hard," Balbir said. "They can come up to the standard provided they try and follow the latest rules, follow their coaches, we need highly paid coaches, highly qualified coaches. Then we should be at the top, among the top 4-5 team," he added. "Practice, it's the key...There were times when we used to score from penalty corners. Individual training is important. Time and again, we used to practice penalty corners. Excellence is not an art but a habit," he said. Besides, Balbir said he also senses a lack of desire to excel among those playing the game now.

POST-TENDULKAR ERA BEGINS WITH TRIAL BY FIRE

OHANNESBURG: The thrashing in ODIs behind them, India will be aiming to start the post-Sachin Tendulkar era in Test cricket on a positive note but the task looks daunting as they would be up against the world’s number one side South Africa in the two-match series starting here tomorrow. At the Wanderers stadium, after losing the three-ODI series 2-0, the visitors will be looking to make their first mark on the tour, in what will be a new era in the annals of Indian cricket. For this is the first Test match for Team India following the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster bid farewell after playing his 200th Test versus West Indies in Mumbai, in what was an emotional rollercoaster for the entire nation’s cricket fans. Since then, six ODIs have been played against the Windies and here in South Africa. The contrasting results in these two series had taken some focus off the issues emanating from Ten-

dulkar’s retirement. Now, they need to be addressed. The first question to be asked is who will bat at number four? The true realisation of Tendulkar’s departure will dawn when a new face comes in to bat at the fall of the second wicket during India’s first innings in this Test. It probably will be Virat Kohli, attempting to fill in the big boots, an unenviable task surely. It fits the context of this Test series. This is India’s first overseas Test in nearly two years, since their tour to Australia in 2011-12. In 12 Tests at home thereafter, India won nine, lost two and drew one, winning series against New Zealand, Australia and West Indies. They lost a series to England in between. Most importantly, this long home season ensured the transition with Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman departing the scene. Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh were side-lined owing to poor performances, giving a completely new look to the Indian team. In this interim, Kohli has been the premier batsman

for this young side for almost two seasons now. And ever since he has landed here, the Proteas have given him their undivided attention. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel peppered him with pace and bounce in the ODI series, wherein he scored 31 runs and a duck in the first two ODIs. That India lost when he failed is, perhaps, a significant reminder of their reliance on Kohli, who has 11 hundreds in successful ODI run-chases. It isn’t his success rate in limited-overs cricket that makes him a first-choice pick for number four in Tests. Instead, it is his aggressive mentality and gusty demeanour that was amply displayed when faced with blinding pace and fearsome bounce in the first ODI at the Wanderers. Riled by a Morkel delivery that hit him in the ribs, Kohli didn’t back away, and took on Steyn and company, or at least he tried to. In the two Tests though, he will need to mix this belligerent intent with caution. It is true for all other batsmen as well.

It will be a test of character for Indian batsmen: Smith

J

OHANNESBURG: South African skipper Graeme Smith sought to play mindgames ahead of the Test series against India, saying the fast and bouncy tracks here will be a real “test of character” for the young Indian batting line-up. “They are a hugely talented bunch but very different from the Indian line-up we are accustomed to play against,” said Smith, referring to the transitional period that this Indian team is going through. “Touring different parts of the world is a test of character and it is going to be so for them in the next two Test matches,” seasoned South African skipper said on the eve of the first Test. India’s tour begun on a disastrous note as they were hammered in the first two One day internationals losing by huge margins of 141 and 136 runs respectively. The Proteas skipper said that he would like his team to play hard and win the Test with a credible performance just like a No 1 team in the world. Smith, was non committal about what to do after winning the toss, just like Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

‘Boof ’ behind Australia’s Ashes turnaround P

ERTH: Australia’s dramatic turnaround to dominate England and win back the Ashes just months after a 3-0 series defeat to their traditional rivals has largely been attributed to the man they call “Boof”. Darren Lehmann has been the instigator of a reinvigoration of Australian cricket in just six months, since stepping

into the hot seat vacated by the sudden sacking of Mickey Arthur. The 43-year-old, who played 27 Tests from 1998 to 2004, has always been credited with a razor-sharp cricket mind. He saw enough during the July-August series in England to detect weaknesses in the England batsmen which he sought to exploit in the back-to-back series.

Australians had won the first two Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide and secured the urn when rejuvenated paceman Mitchell Johnson claimed his 23rd wicket of the series to remove Jimmy Anderson and end the England second innings. Although the Ashes have been regained, Clarke said Australia were targeting a 5-0 win in the series as they seek to climb from fifth in the world Test cricket rankings. “We want to get back that number The Aussies rejoicing after snaring the final English wicket. one ranking,” he said. The result reflected the series.

Lehmann raised eyebrows when he observed towards the back-end of the last series: “We’ve shown some cracks in their batting which is exciting for us as a bowling unit. Has the momentum shifted? I think it has but only time will tell.” They were to prove prescient words as Lehmann got

down to work devising plans for each English batsman. These were implemented to devastating effect by Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle. Australia stymied skipper Alastair Cook’s scoring shots on the leg side, while Kevin Pietersen was forced into errors by the nagging consistency of Siddle.

Warner mulls US Australia beat England to win Test and reclaim Ashes baseball trial - report

ERTH: Australia beat England by 150 runs to win the third Test in Perth and reclaim the Ashes from their bitter rivals, with skipper Michael Clarke hailing an “outstanding” effort. England were all out for 353 on the final day at the WACA Ground to hand the home side an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. It capped a remarkable turnaround for Australia, who went into the series just months after a 3-0 Ashes loss in England. “I don’t really know what to say. We’ve got them back, I couldn’t be happier,” Clarke said of the Ashes, which England had held for the past three series. “Credit to the team for how

YDNEY: Explosive Australian opener David Warner is mulling a baseball trial in the United States where successful hitters can earn millions of dollars a year, a report said. Warner’s manager Tony Connelly told the Sydney Daily Telegraph all options were being considered for a player who has plundered the English bowling in the ongoing Ashes series where he is averaging over 90. “Dave and I have spoken about it — it would be interesting to see how he goes,” Connelly said of a baseball trial. “A pitch over the plate is a full toss right in his range but once they start throwing

curves, it’s a bit different. “We talked about setting up a trial in the States and getting him in a batting cage just to have a look. It was more a fun thing to see how he goes. Right now he’s in the middle of an Ashes series and that’s his total focus.” Warner’s red-hot form in the Ashes series could make him a US$5 million a year player, Connelly said, but this would be nothing to what he could command as a top baseball star. The left-hander is expected to attract a US$2 million deal at next month’s Indian Premier League auction on top of his Cricket Australia contract and everincreasing endorsements.
