magine magistrates standing alongside Traffic officials while they intercept drunken driving offenders and meting out instant punishment to those found guilty. This long pending proposal will be a reality soon, after officials of the Mumbai Traffic Police recently met with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and got a positive response to this unique proposal. The drunken driving campaign was initiated in June 2007 to arrest the increasing number of fatal mishaps. From June 2007 to March 25 this year, the traffic police have recorded 91,891 cases of drunk driving. Of these, 48,377 offenders were sentenced to simple imprisonment and driving licences of 41,835 offenders were suspended by magistrate courts. There have also been instances of offenders reportedly approaching the court, complaining of being wrongly booked. With this new system, instant punishment will be given to offenders on the spot. Speaking to the ADC, Vivek Phansalkar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said, “This is a proposal we have sent to the Registrar of the Bombay High Court and the matter

oes the green signal for dance bars mean a red one for live orchestra bands? While bar owners and dancers in Mumbai rejoiced after the Apex Court upheld the Bombay High Court order of 2006, questioning the Maharashtra Government’s motive for the ‘unreasonable’ ban, it was a not-so-happy moment for the ‘orchestra’ troupes, which had taken over the mantle almost immediately after a blanket ban was imposed on dance bars in the year 2005. More than 50 orchestra bars (most of them having built-in guest houses) had cropped up in the MiraBhayandar region since the ban was imposed eight years ago. OPINIONS

Should the state government appeal against the Supreme Court order on Dance Bars?

Francis Joseph Educationist Yes. In spite of all knowing the dangerous impact of such activities, I am surprised how the government can remain quiet and not fight back. Shoba Ravi Working Professional It doesn’t make any difference as similar activities would have been on even when dance bars as such were banned. Shubhank Gupta Event Management Yes. After the ban, we have observed a drastic change in the mindsets of people, families and women feeling more safe and Punit Bhavsar Working professional Yes. People in Mumbai had forgotten about the dance bar culture. So why bring it back? Why lift the ban?

Lakshmi Subharaman Working professional Yes. They are a bad influence in society. For those working in dance bars, the govt should provide decent alternatives.

hough three dams out of six are full while two more are close to being filled, officials from the Hydraulic Department responsible for the city’s water supply to city are tense, as an unusually high amount of rainfall in these dams will pose a danger to villages in the area and the dam itself. July is yet to come to an end but the Modak Sagar started overflowing on Wednesday morning, followed by the Tulsi and Tansa. The Vihar is just 1.5 meters below the overflow mark while the Upper Vaitarna is just 3 meters short of overflowing. As per the Hydraulic Department report, on Wednesday morning the total water in stock in all six dams

hanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are worried. The officials of the Hydraulic department have to keep a constant watch on the lake level as well as on the rains for the safety of the dam.

For safety, some water will have to be released from the dams when they are full but if the rainfall in the coming months is not sufficient, the release will lead to a scarcity of water. The Hydraulic Department officials said, “We have simple calculations – on September 30, we need 12.5 lakh million litres of water in all our reservoirs to meet the demand of the city. Whether the dams get full in July or August is immaterial for us. We measure the amount of water only on September 30. However, the water level in the Bhatsa dam, the major supplier of water to the city is still 12 meters below the overflow mark. Bhatsa has a huge capacity but is experiencing insufficient rains as compared to the other dams.

hammad Azharuddin's life to feature on celluloid. TV and film Producer Ekta Kapoor has reportedly started working on a biopic on the cricketerturned-politician. The 50-year-old former Indian skipper's cricketing career came to an abrupt end in the wake of match-fixing scandal in 2000. The Hyderabadi cricketer, who has played 99 Tests and over 300 ODIs, is considered one of the most stylish batsmen the game has ever seen. Although Ekta is yet to go on record about the project, there is a strong buzz about it. "Till the time we don't formalise things we would not like to say anything at the moment," an industry source told PTI, without confirming or denying this development. It is reported that the producer signed a contract with Azharuddin, Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, sometime back to acquire the rights for his biopic.

Although an official announcement is awaited, it is learnt the film is expected to go on the floors later this year. There is a buzz that three actors Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh - are on the wish list of the filmmakers for the lead role.

This is the open drain, now covered, where the truck tyre went into causing it to topple to its side.

The victim, Sheela Fernandez, had returned from Dubai a month ago and had started working in a shipping firm in Santacruz. She was passing through the premises of a building under construction, Fortune Heights, when the truck, loaded with sand was reversing. Not aware of the open drainage chamber, the truck driver lost control when the rear tyre of the truck went into it, resulting in the vehicle falling on the victim. Sources from the Vakola police station have identified the truck driver as Bansilal Ramashankar Pal (29) and have arrested him under various sections of the IPC for negligence. He was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody for seven days. The victim’s family is still waiting to receive her body and perform the final rites.

orchestra troupes comprised 10 to 12 members, including male and female singers, musicians and sound support technicians. While several bar girls transformed into singers, the orchestra troupes opened a window of opportunity for aspiring playback singers and veteran musicians who were at some point of time attached to the film and television industry. A young female singer from Madhya Pradesh, who was a co-winner of a reputed musical TV reality show, worked at a local orchestra bar near Dahisar Check Naka even as she struggled to make her presence felt in Bollywood. A 60-year-old ‘tabla vadak’ who was a part of Bollywood now earns his livelihood by performing at one such bar in Mira Road. Even as orchestra bands grappled to churn out a decent living on a 50:50 ratio (collections through showered money is equally shared between the bar owner and the orchestra troupe), it is an open secret that notorious bar owners gradually began using the orchestras as a front to conceal their prostitution activities. Semi-clad bar girls under the guise of ‘non-serving’ waitresses, just stood around to decorate the scene and became active only after they struck an ‘indecent’ deal with patrons. “A green signal to dance bars is all set to be the end of the road for live orchestras as no bar owner would now be interested in retaining our services,” said Guddu, an organiser of live shows at a bar in Bhayandar. Some bar owners said that they would try and create two sections

to accommodate both the orchestra stage and the dance floor.

Illegal guest houses, orchestra bars mushroomed in post-ban era Ban or no ban, a section of bar owners in the Mira-Bhayandar region continued to grab their pound of flesh in the post-ban era. After the ban was imposed, several orchestra bars and illegal lodges cropped up not only in residential areas but on both sides of the service road on the MumbaiAhmedabad National Highway. The rampant flesh trade menace is evident of the fact that despite a ban on dance bars, the Thane (rural) police have carried out several raids, rescued girls and registered cases under the stringent Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) against bar owners and hotel staff who acted as pimps. Before the ban, most dance bars doubled up as pick-up-joints and operated till the wee hours of the morning. After the ban, people who owned the bar and hotel premises had to slash the monthly rentals by over fifty percent which actually came as blessing in disguise for actual bar operators, who under the guise of live orchestras continued the nefarious activities with added vigour and profit. And with dingy guest houses in their own backyard, things became much easier for them.

‘Dance-bar addicts’ will be back in the news? When the dance bar industry was in full bloom, more and more crimes (including a heinous one where a man, after being refused money to splurge in a dance bar, killed his mother) committed by people to fund their addiction towards bars and dancing damsels had been reported. These people mostly belonged to the middle class of the society. It has been ambitiously claimed that each bar generates minimum revenue of Rs.25 lakh per month. From where does this money come, is the question. Small time businessmen going bankrupt, employees committing economic offences, youth turning to petty crimes including chain snatching are some of the sources that have been revealed after their arrests. “Dance bars being back in business are a worrisome issue, particularly when they are located in densely populated areas. The threat of harassment to women by drunken revelers will increase. Moreover once men start patronizing these nefarious water holes, the peace and tranquility of a family is bound to be devastated. Regarding the issue of unemployment, aren't there other poor women in the world who work hard in other fields to support their families. Does everybody take to prostitution?” questioned a housewife.

One member of the gang however, managed to escape. The three who have been identified as Ajay Mahendra Singh (26), Arman Khan (22) and Ali Salim Mirza, would take advantage of their good looks and would dress well to enter residential premises without being stopped by the building security. Once they were in, they would break into locked flats. The arrest took place after an alert society member noticed the four trying to flee

the police. The four were then rounded up by the society members and handed over to the police. However, in the bargain, one of the thieves managed to cross the boundary wall and escape. When the society members searched the gang’s bags with the help of police officials, they found equipment used by the gang to commit the robberies and the cash which they robbed. According to Assistant Police Inspector, Bangur Nagar Police station, Sandipan Pawar, the gang had a sharp modus operandi which in-

They were apparently residents of Grant Road and had come from Delhi to Mumbai to steal. After committing their crimes, they would send the loot to Delhi with one of their colleagues by train”, said Pawar. The trio has been produced in court and remanded to custody till July 23. The police also suspect that they may be involved in other robberies in Mumbai and Delhi.

ith the Election Commission slapping a showcause notice on him for his poll expense remark, BJP leader Gopinath Munde on Wednesday sought four more weeks' time along with reports of returning officer on expenditure incurred by him during 2009 parliamentary poll. The EC had served a notice on Munde on June 29, asking him why he should not be disqualified for ‘suppressing and undervaluing’ his poll campaign expenditure with his public admission of having spent Rs.8 crore over it. Sources said the poll panel is likely to take a call in its meeting on Thursday, when the period of its notice is set to end, on whether to grant more time to Munde. The EC had asked Munde to explain within 20 days why action should not be initiated against him under the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, and why he should not be disqualified under the Representation of People Act for his "failure" to maintain a correct account of his election expenses, reports PTI. The prescribed limit of poll campaign expenditure during the 2009 Parliamentary election was Rs 25 lakh. Munde, who is an MP from Beed and BJP's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, had on June 27 said during a book launch function in Mumbai that he had spent a whopping Rs.8 crore during his 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former BJP chief Nitin

Gadkari. The EC notice said, "The reasons for the said default should be explained by you in writing and your explanation should reach the Commission within 20 days from the

Gopinath Munde date of receipt of this notice. "ln case, you fail to do so, within the time stipulated above, you will render yourself liable, without any further reference to you in the matter, for disqualification under section 10 A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951....For a period of 3 years from the date of order of the Commission...," the EC notice to him said. The EC said that the election expenditure shown by Munde in the 2009 elections was only Rs 19,36,922. Munde, who claimed he spent over Rs 8 crore in the 2009 polls, has sought details alongwith copies of documents filed by the returning officer on his poll expenses.

tates unabashed, interactive dialogues between distinguished guests and students based on the notion that everything begins with an idea. Its aim is therefore to act as a medium of exchange for these ideas, and to trigger the will to change something within those who are present. This year’s keynote speaker at

Students play on streets as city colleges construct buildings on their playgrounds

Even 45 days after classes started, around 10,000 civic school students in Mira Bhayandar are still waiting for their uniforms

By Yatin Ingle

Even after paying fees for the use of a playground and gymnasium, city college students have been found playing on the streets outside their college premises. The reason behind this is that most city colleges lack playgrounds and gymnasiums, while colleges equipped with playgrounds are now turning them into construction sites for new projects or institutions. Having no place to practice or play within the college campus for competitions and championships, students have been forced to practice and play on the streets. chools reopened sometime in mid-June, but 11year-old Geeta Patil (name changed) has been using her short, faded and slightly tight uniform she had received last year. The Std V student has no idea as to how long she will have to make do with the old uniform as she is yet to get a new set from her municipal school in Bhayandar. Geeta is not alone, but is among the 9,859 students who are enrolled with 35 schools in the twin-city being run by the education department of the Mira Bhayandar Municpal Corporation (MBMC).

Apart from uniforms, the students are yet to get their shoes, school-bags and even books! While 21 of the 35 schools offer education in Marathi medium, four schools are of Hindi medium and five each of Gujarati and Urdu medium. “Despite of my official intimation in March, the administration as usual failed in setting up a proper system, to ensure that uniforms and other material are delivered on time,” alleged Shiv Sena corporator Prashant Dalvi. All these students are most likely to go to schools without uniform for the entire month of July since the process of awarding work orders to con-

tractors is still to get an official nod from the standing committee, despite the fact that a budgetary allocation of Rs.2 crore has already been made for the purpose in the current fiscal. However, when contacted, Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said, “It is true that there has been an unprecedented delay, however we were helpless as only one company took part in the bid process prompting us to recall the tenders which will soon be tabled before the standing committee and we will ensure that the students are provided with uniforms and education material by next week.”

A student who did not wished to be named says, “Even after paying fees for the gymnasium and playground, we don't have a place in college to practice our sports. The playground is under construction leaving us with no option but to play on the streets.” According to the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, a college affiliated to a varsity should compulsorily have a playground and a gymnasium. As per the rules of the Local Investigation Committee, a college should have a specific area for the playground. If not, then the college fails to abide by the rules and regulations of the

college infrastructure guidelines of the varsity. When the ADC, spoke to Pradeep Sawant, Member of the Students Grievance Committee and Senate Member, MU, he said “City colleges have been engaged in building new structures on playgrounds rather than encouraging and supporting students to practice sports and utilize the ground. Students should step up and complain to the Student Grievance Cell of the varsity. The committee will surely take strict action against colleges taking part in such activity in the college premises.” yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

HIS is a political column. So the only reason why you are reading about dance bars this week is because it was for entirely political reasons that they were closed in Maharashtra in 2005. Political reasons so narrow that the opinion of vociferous middle-class moralists was given precedence over the livelihood of thousands of women who supported whole families on what they earned. And, so hypocritical that the State Home Minister R.R. Patil, has never dared admit that dance bars have nothing to do with child prostitution. after eating their mid-day meal. It is clear as crystal that the kids were given poisonous meals. The deaths occurred in no time at all – soon as the hapless kids ate the poisonous food. How did the poison get into the food? A probe has been ordered by the chief minister and it may show what actually happened. Who is responsible for the deaths of so many innocent children? Who is to be blamed for this? This is not the first time a tragedy occurred after kids ate poisoned food. Across the country, there have been several instances of kids falling ill after eating the mid-day meal. Parents have come to regard the meal as unsafe. They feel it is better their kids become drop-outs than die. It is pathetic that the mid-day meal scheme has become a failure. It has also become dangerous. The grave happening in Bihar has shown that it is better to do away with the scheme as it also indicates that other projects like the ‘food security scheme’ cannot yield the desired results.

Hypocritical politicians The Supreme Court has reversed a serious injustice in its recent judgement and we can only hope that Maharashtra’s narrow-minded and hypocritical politicians do not find some other way of preventing the dance bars from opening again. If they are genuinely interested in ending the horror of child prostitution they need to work harder to ensure that the brothels of Mumbai stop forcing children to become sex slaves. This can easily be done because the police know exactly which brothels have children in them and which ones do not. If they do not stop child prostitution it is because the brothel owners make enough money to keep the police happy. If anyone can change things it should be the Home Minister that is if he is really interested in stopping the most sicken-

ing form of child abuse. Around the time that Patil closed the dance bars in 2005, I was doing a programme for NDTV’s Hindi channel called ‘Indianama’. One of the first episodes I did was about child prostitution in Mumbai and I was able to do it only because the police chief at the time, Anami Roy, was eager to publicize the raids that he was conducting on brothels. The story that unfolded for me that day was so horrible that by the time we finished visiting brothels late that evening I had a high fever and was sickened to my soul. I met young girls, some no more than fourteen years old, who had been kidnapped and forced into prostitution before they reached puberty. I remember in particular the story of a girl whose name I think was Rubina, who was kidnapped while playing outside her parents’ pavement home in Delhi. She was sold to a brothel under the Kennedy Bridge and forced to have sex with

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh more than ten men a day in a cubicle no wider than a large desk. She came back with us the day we went on the raid to search for a scrap of paper on which she thought was written her parents address. When we got to the brothel she searched desperately in a blue plastic vanity case filled with cheap cosmetics and she searched under the narrow wooden plank that had been her bed. She did not find it and it clearly broke her heart. As we were leaving Ian Dowling, the man who ran the rescue centre where she had been taken, told me that she was HIV positive. In Mumbai, there are hundreds of thousands of girls like her in the brothels. They should be easy to find but

for this to happen you need political leaders who are motivated by more than hypocrisy and tokenism.

Forced into prostitution

Because of their fraudulent motives, girls who made an honest living and good money out of dancing in bars were driven into the streets. Some were forced into prostitution, some were trafficked to countries in the Middle East and some found whatever work they could to feed their families. In the words of a bar dancer I interviewed for a column that appeared in April 2005, “Where we could make Rs.200 and Rs.300 a day we barely manage to make Rs.20 and sometimes it gets so bad the owner gives us a few rupees to go and eat a meal.” The girls I interviewed in the ‘dancers room’ of a bar just after the ban came into effect came from very poor families in Kolkata, Kanpur and Lucknow. They were mostly illiterate so their employment options were limited but the moralists who imposed the ban could not have cared less. They come from middle-class families who mostly believe that poor people are ‘bad’ at the best of times. Moralists are not easily defeated either. Like all puritans they believe righteousness is on their side. So if the Supreme Court does not keep a careful eye on what is going to happen now it is entirely possible that the same people will get back into action and find some other way to ensure that dance bars do not come back into business. It is the city that has to give licenses for a bar to open and the licenses may become impossible to get. If this happens it would be a tragedy for Mumbai because I remember the dance bar in which I went to do my interviews as a happy place filled with music, lights and gilded ceilings. The brothels of Mumbai, on the other hand, I remember as places that reek of evil, exploitation and disease. The rescued child prostitutes I talked to told stories of being beaten and starved if they refused to service customers. Even on days when they were sick they were forced to work and more often than not all they ‘earned’ were two meals a day and some clothes. If R.R. Patil is sincere in wanting to do something good for Mumbai it is the brothels he needs to attack. The question to ask is why he has not already done so.

Thanks to NaMo, a Nationalist turns Muslim Nationalist

TILL a couple of days ago, I was just a Nationalist (and a truly diehard one) but today my Nationalism is slightly ‘Modi-fied’ as now I am a Muslim Nationalist. The change is due to a “new” theory invented by Narendra Modi in an interview with Reuters. His theory: he is a born Hindu and a true Nationalist so he is a Hindu Nationalist, great. Everybody should be proud of the religion to which he/ she belongs and one should also be proud of his/ her patriotism. Nationalism has no religion so did we believe till recently, but then NaMo has new ideas of “development” and “progress” where even Nationalism has a religion. His analogue about the 2002 deaths with that of the death of a puppy under his car was truly in line with his inner feelings. Will he just explain two things—who was his reckless driver and what action did he take on him? And would he have just felt ‘dukh’ and sat casually on the backseat had it been an “insaan ka baccha” instead of “kutte ka”?

statement that even if a puppy comes under the wheels of his car, of course, it will be very much painful for him, whether he is a chief minister or not, because after all he is a human being. This means very clearly that he is sad about the undesired 2002 riots because he is a human being. And this fact was also publicised in all the leading national, impartial, democracy and patriotism loving dailies, of course, except a few prejudiced ones. But the Congress, with its notorious mask of secularism, obviously for votes, never wants to understand Narendra Modi’s humane thoughts. Every now and then Congress stalwarts--Digvijay Singh and Manish Tiwari--uselessly try to divert the countrymen’s minds from the Party’s misrule: corruption, spiraling food inflation, terror attacks, et al. Why doesn’t this pseudo secular Congress concentrate on these vital, pro-aam aadmi issues?

— Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

— Abdul Monim, New Delhi

ANY sensible and English knowing person can easily understand the meaning of Narendra Modi’s

Telegram dies a sad death! IT is very sad that the 162-year-old telegram service has been retired from Postal service due to instantaneous satellite communication. Started in 1850, on an experimental basis between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour, it was opened for use by the British East India Company the following year. In 1854, the

IT appears that a tacit understanding has been reached between the UPA II and the secular press. By which, whenever anything about Narendra Modi and the BJP is to be published, the ings in the receiver. As most of the people were uneducated and did not understand the idiom of ‘taar’, they started weeping without knowing its contents till the help of some educated person was sought. ‘Taar’ was so popular that many Bollywood films included a cameo on ‘taar’. But in the present times, SMS, email and Facebook have pushed the telegram service into history. — K.V. Raman, Malad

Shabaash, Capt. Manchanda!

BURIED! Advancement of technology in communication has dug the grave for the telegram in India, after 162 years of dedicated postal service. service was made available to the public. It was decided to discontinue telegrams following a huge shortfall in revenue. All over the country, 75 telegram centres and around 1,000 employees managed them. With technological innovations—SMS, email and mobile phones etc., the telegram gradually faded into oblivion.

THIS is with reference to ‘Home is hero’ (Diary—ADC, July 16). Captain Andrew Manchanda of the Pawan Hans helicopter services deserves to be complimented for volunteering to do evacuation duty in the treacherous mountains of Uttarakhand. Though he has been trained in off-shore flying, he felt it his duty to take the call from the PMO’s office and go to the hills. He has done nearly 24 hours of flying under very difficult weather conditions and rescued over 100 distresed people—young, old and sick, besides distributing food and supplies with zeal. It was a risky operation, climbing nearly 3,000 metres over the mountains and going OF down zig-zag valleys. LETTER THE DAY One remembers that one of the helicopters crashed killing all the 19 occupants in the same terrain. The country is indeed proud of Captain Manchanda and we need more brave men like him. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

— Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel

TIME was when the telegram service, popularly recognised as ‘taar’, was the only as well as the fastest mode of communication for conveying news to near and dear ones all over the country. One remembers the days when the influx of a telegram generated negative feel-

India’s heritage? Who cares? YOUR readers owe a lot to Chauthi Duniya Bureau and of course the ADC for exposing the UPA’s lack of interest in bringing back articles and heirlooms which are auctioned regularly abroad. media should only place the halftruth before the general public. The latest glaring example is that of the Rs. 5/- charge per person to be collected by the BJP from the people wishing to attend Modi’s Hyderabad rally. They have conve-

CONGRESS has made much issue over the Narendra Modi’s ‘puppy’ remark, that Modi had compared the little dog with a particular caste dog. But on the Sadbhavana mission in Gujarat, Congress and its spokesman Kapil Sibal claimed about Modi thus: “Sau chuhe khaake billi Haj ko chali”. It means Sibal had compared the Muslim caste as rat. The sensible person can understand what message a proverb gives, hence one should follow the message of the proverb and not its literal meaning. But we can see that there is no dearth of foolish persons in our political arena. We would get thousands, if we were to search for one, isn’t it?

— Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara

ANTITHESIS: Nationalism has no religion, that’s what we believed till recently. hit headlines, unlike a couple of years back when the ‘Sword of Tipu Sultan’ was purchased by Vijay Mallya and all newspapers carried the news, thanks to good publicity by Mallya’s publicists. Kamal Morarka, by purchasing 29 items auctioned in 2012 and now 16 items recently, has preserved for eternity what could have languished in some foreigners’ hands. If India is still able to raise its head in the comity of nations, it is thanks to selfless nationalists like Morarka. Congress may have no value for Mahatma Gandhi today,

IT was quite heartening to see little Malala speaking at UNO. She is the same girl who was shot by the Taliban. Her only crime was she was propagating for girl education which was not liked by primitive Taliban. Ignorance is a bliss for them. They thrive on ignorance. Malala has become an epitome of courage to the world and, therefore, July 12th has been named as her month. What an honour! but Morarka can be sure Gandhiji would be smiling at him from above, and that is more than all the wealth the world can give. — H.S. Krishna Prasad, Mumbai

UPA II is running scared THE UPA government is now frightened. The heir apparent’s chances of becoming PM are dwindling. Modi’s presence is looming large on the horizon. The Supreme Court has writ large on the wall—”No one with a criminal record can stand for elections”. Now what?

Ours is the country who produced individuals whose names are taken by the world. But, in our own country, we have a certain Narendra Modi who compares puppies to human beings. He is so audacious and shameless, he did not hesitate to compare the death of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002 to the death of a puppy under his chauffeur-driven car. — M.H. Nayak, Mumbai

IT appears that Narendra Modi is working on a well set pre-designed plan. He is occasionally issuing controversial statements which he knows, would invite instant strong reactions from the overwhelmingly “secular” Indian media. Throwing their full weight behind these vehement media protests are the “secular” parties like the Congress, the Reds, SP and the BSP, etc. Their full throttled anti-Modi chorus always keeps him in the limelight, thereby serving the very purpose intended by Modi. Thus, all the “secular” parties and media are unwittingly contributing to the election campaign of the Gujarat CM and the BJP’s prime ministerial aspirant. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli

Bring the Godhra incident and use it again and again to malign Modi. For this non-topic is being whipped like a dead horse to stand up and run! They have forgotten the 1984 riots when Sikhs were butchered and the cases against the ministers dropped. But the public knows the truth. They will act at the time of the forthcoming elections. As the Gita says, the time has come for ‘Maryada Purshottam’ to come. Who will he be is anybody’s guess. But it’s certain—it will not be from the UPA government. — Mrs Gooloo Mehta, Bandra

BAR DANCERS ELATED OVER SC FIAT! make sure the women who work in these bars have greater protection and it should focus on police efforts to control crime rather than moral oversight. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

YEH KUCH BAATH HUI! The apex court has rightly ordered the State to focus on regulating dance bars with better protection to the women working in them. SUPREME COURT has undone an unfair ban on dance bars in Mumbai. In 2005 Maharashtra government led by Home Minister R.R. Patil felt dance bars were the breeding grounds for prostitution and crime, declaring that the state was preparing to forgo its excise revenue for the sake of greater virtue. The Bombay HC struck down the ban in 2006 and state appealed to Supreme Court and due to the court’s stay order,

hundreds of bars closed down forcing women working therein to go jobless and live in strained circumstances, while the elite version of the same pleasure carried on in posh hotels. The state had no solution to rehabilitate the women affected by the ban. The SC rightly ordered the state to concentrate on regulating these establishments. After all, if it is genuinely concerned about crime and prostitution, the state should

IT is reported that the SC has since lifted the ban on dance bars in Maharashtra, thus paving the way for reopening of the entire gamut of the same. It is not given to understand as to how the merits forcing the closure of the dance bars earlier, could not prevail over the demerits of reopening and running the dance bars as prior to August 15, 2005 for the appreciation of the SC. The State Govt., would now be hard-pressed to allow the reopening and required to carefully frame the guidelines to ensure orderly running of these bars with stringent norms specifying age limit, et al so that the youth including students are not permitted into such bars. — T.M. Display your menu on the table. The best way to do it is by putting a printed copy in an old frame. Add a centerpiece, use silver cutlery and make use of your best silver trays and elegant glasses. A great way to set your table is to place cards for each guest. Write their names on card paper and place them on the plates for a personal touch. Here are a few home items you should think of getting to make your party vintage. Continued on pg 14 «

Sending out invites instead of just calling people is wonderfully archaic. Simply buy some handmade paper, write a simple invitation to dinner, roll it up like a scroll and tie it with a ribbon. If you don’t have time to snail mail it to people (we know how reliable post is in the city), hand deliver or courier them to your guests. You can also make use of your Photoshop skills to use a vintage font (we love Reisling and Book Antiqua) and print out invites if you don’t trust your penmanship.

the Menu Nothing makes your party more vintage than a classic menu. Here are a few easy picks: Drinks

Gimlets: An easy cocktail to help make your party über vintage is the Gimlet, a popular 1920’s drink simply made with gin and lime cordial. Mix and serve over ice. Punch: A vintage party is never complete without a bowl of punch. Mix a fizzy drink with grape juice and add in fresh fruit. Add alcohol of your choice if you’d like to spike it. Root beer: Before colas came the iconic and now vintage root beer. You can pick up Angus O’Neil’s Root Beer at the Hypercity outlets.

Drinking snacks Pick some of these vintage snacks up for a nohassle cocktail round: Mini quiches from Candies and Theobroma outlets across the city. Cheese and crackers from Hypercity outlets across the city. Mixed nuts from any retail shop across the city.

Soup

Cream of asparagus: Asparagus soup was extremely popular right up to the ’40s and is a good option for both vegetarian and nonvegetarian guests. Pick up Campbell’s Cream of Asparagus soup from Hypercity outlets for soup that you literally just have to pop out of a can.

entrée These dishes were very popular on vintage menus, along with more experimental liver and giblet dishes. Pick one as your main course dish or mix and match depending on how elaborate you want the dinner to be: Poached salmon: Amadeus at Nariman Point serves delicious Poached Salmon that makes for a great take-away dish. Beef Wellington: Surprisingly, a lot of restaurants in Mumbai still serve the vintage English dinner classic. Pick up the dish from Shockk in Bandra (W).

To make things more interesting, here are some vintage game ideas that you can have at your party: Vintage dancing shoes: This one is for people who love to dance. Play a contemporary, poppy track and tell your guests to try dancing in a vintage ballroom style to it. The couple whose dance is most true to the theme and beat, wins! Clue to your favourite: As guests enter, provide them with a drink with a handmade flag as a stirrer. The flag will have a clue to find their favourite drink. This works best if your guests are people you know well. Vintage murder mystery: There are vintage murder mystery games available on eBay and Amazon. They are packed with clues, names, badges and can be a great source of entertainment and intrigue.

Chicken Cordon Bleu: Travel back in time with this dish, available at most continental restaurants in the city.

Dessert To round off the meal, set up a mini-dessert stand and serve vintage treats. You can pick up mini-cakes, tarts, choux pastry and macaroons from Le15 Patisserie outlets (pictured below) and get chocolate éclairs from Merwans in Andheri (W). Serve them on a dessert stand.

Create a fabulously vintage playlist with our top picks. Glenn Miller: Our favourites from the American master of swing music are Moonlight Serenade, A String of Pearls and In the Mood. the XX: The song Together was in The Great Gatsby (2013) and it will take you back to the ’20s. Frank Sinatra: Frank Sinatra’s Moon River is perfectly vintage. Also, listen to The Honey Trees version. the Bryan Ferry orchestra: Their song, Love is the Drug is vintage jazz at its best. the Andrews Sisters: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy is a popular jazz/ blues/ swing song that will take you back to the live bands of the ‘20s. nancy Sinatra: Bang Bang is not cheerful, but has a gorgeously epoch feel to it with minimalistic guitar and Nancy’s smooth as velvet voice.

un, bubbly and full of life — Erica D’Souza is the larger-than-life radio host who accompanies most of the city on their arduous drive home with Drive Mumbai on 94.3 Radio One. Erica has been with the industry since FM Radio went commercial in the ’90s. Coming out of a sabbatical post baby, a music-radio centric consultancy partnered with a long-time colleague allowed her to dabble in projects such as Mumbai’s first citizen run community radio station and soundscaping commercial enterprises. 1. Braid it up: Be it French, fishtail or regular, plaits are in vogue and a boon in this weather. Blow-dry your hair and choose a centre or side parting. Try a full French braid, or if you’re in a rush, plait your hair loosely on one side beginning from the nape of your neck. 2. loose waves: As it is our hair is moody during the rains, it’s better not to try and keep it straight. If your hair wants to be frizzy, straight hair won’t look good no matter how hard you try. The solution for this is to opt for some cool, loose waves. 3. Bun: Feel free with a sexy, slightly undone summer up do. Make a low ponytail and then twist it into a bun. Leaving a few wispy strands of hair, secure the bun with pins. For a neater look, apply gel on damp hair and opt for a tight chignon right at the nape or the back of the neck. 4. side ponytail: If you don’t want to step out with a high ponytail, try the side ponytail instead. Tie your hair into a ponytail at the nape and gently pull your hair to one side. 5. Headband: Keep hair off your face by sporting a headband. Slick your hair back into a high ponytail and fan out the ends. Slide an elastic headband about two inches back from your hairline. Don’t be shy to experiment with bright colours and bold patterns.

Yet another pretty girl with bad taste in clothes. This hi-low style looks odd and out of place. The blazer, while nice, fights for attention with her top and once again, matchy-matchy shoes. A simple white vest could have saved this look.

«

«

We like how she has taken a super sexy and fitted bandage skirt and paired it with a relaxed white shirt. The look is still sexy, but not overly so. The shoes add a fun touch, but her hair and legs are perfection! This petite star knows how to show off her assets.

In theory, this outfit is nice: jeans, white heels and a fitted white jacket. But, what you read and what you get is different. The acid wash doesn’t look good on her, but our major gripe are those kitten heels! They are too ladylike for the look she was going for. However, we do like the jacket.

gaRNieR FRuctis goodBye daMage RaNge Repair one year of hair damage in three washes. Those are some pretty tall claims for Garnier. The shampoo and conditioner from this range is supposed to leave hair 10 times stronger and with less split ends. But as expected, the asterisk mark (*) on the label told us that conditions apply. And the first condition is that you should probably start off this experiment with good hair. The oil is like any other, but the smell was not as pleasing. And while the shampoo did a thorough job in cleansing my hair, it did little to improve the quality of my hair even after four washes. The conditioner smelled heavenly and was rich to use. Together, the trio of products did a good job of making my hair feel clean, but it was also strangely fluffier than usual. While it might not live up to its claims (really, which products do?!) the range is reasonably priced and good for an everyday shampoo + conditioner. « CAREER ADVICE

cOnServative in-laWS POSing a hurdle in yOur career? Find Out What yOu can dO

I am a 21-year-old girl and I’ve just started working. I am the youngest in the office and this is my first job, because of which I feel intimidated. Lately the office boy keeps checking me out and passing some remark or the other whenever he comes near my desk. The rest of the staff seems to know him very well. I don’t want to be disliked by my colleagues for telling the guy off, but he really makes me uncomfortable. What should I do? — Binal Mehta, goregaon dear Binal, Just because you are the youngest doesn’t mean that people have a right to push you

around. Don’t be a typical newcomer who wants to please everyone, at least not at the cost of the office boy making passes at you. Tell the boy in a stern tone to stop fooling around otherwise you will report him to the boss. Even if the rest of your colleagues are on good terms with him doesn’t mean you should not voice your problem. If he doesn’t stop, by all means go ahead and report him. I am newly married and my in-laws are rather conservative. The problem I’m facing is that even though they let me work, they want me to do so on their terms. They want me to wear

Indian clothes and keep a strict 9-5 schedule. I want to dress like everyone at work and my job demands that I stay a late sometimes. I am scared to talk to my husband about this because I feel as though he will take their side and I might not be allowed to work at all. How can I be happy without breaking their rules? — amita rajan, Mulund dear amita, Your situation is similar to a lot of other Indian women, but you are lucky that you are getting to work despite having a conservative set of in-laws. One suggestion is that you could always change into different clothes once

you’re at work and change back before going home but make sure you keep them informed. About the timings, I feel you should talk to your husband because he is more likely to understand your situation. He would be facing a similar situation at his workplace and might be able to help you out here. Communication is the key to any problem, so the easiest way to sort this out is to keep talking to your in-laws about how you feel about their ‘rules.’ Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

MoM’s guideS to FB >> Who is this boy who liked my little girl’s picture? I’m going to teach that... Stop mom! Be cool! We tell you how

Shutterstock

If your Facebook friend list boasts of your offspring, there are some things you should keep in mind. Priyanka Singh tells you how to be a Facebook friendly mom

o many teenagers thank the ‘block and limited’ profile feature on Facebook, not because of a stalker or someone who they don’t want peeking into their profile, but because of their mothers. Oh yes, mothers often go overboard with their online affection on Facebook. But, if you’re a mom, don’t blame yourself. We know you don’t do it on purpose; it so happens that you just don’t know that your children take their online image very seriously. So, here is a guide on Facebook etiquette for you.

Don’ts Friend request: Do not and we will repeat this to reiterate our point, do not send friend requests to your children’s friends. It is going to be very weird, not just to his or her friends, but for them as well. You are on Facebook to mingle with your friends and people your age. Don’t use it to get into your children’s friends’ friend list. Limit liking: At least pretend that you are not stalking your kids! Don’t go on liking every picture or post they put up. Same goes for commenting. Giving your opinion on everything they do on their wall is not something that they will appreciate. Also, try to limit your likes. Discuss offline: If you find something objectionable on your son or daughter’s Facebook wall, don’t show your displeasure by commenting on that post. Don’t publically reprimand them online. Instead, try to discuss the topic in person or drop in a private Facebook message in their inbox.

Don’t get mad: If you posted something and your son or daughter deleted that post or comment, don’t be mad at them. They must have a valid reason for doing so. Do not repost the deleted post in order to make a point. If you felt bad about it, discuss it with them face to face. Not on Facebook.

Do’s tagging: Dear mothers, we know that you must be new to Facebook and are quite enthusiastic about putting up your family’s pictures. However, always show your children the picture before putting it up and tagging them. You might find the picture where their face is stuffed with your cookies adorable, but this very picture might make them a subject of ridicule among their peers. So, before you upload it, do ask them if they are okay with the picture or not. Be yourself: Don’t behave like your children’s mother on Facebook, but be yourself. Don’t make your Facebook wall all about them. You are an individual first and then someone’s daughter, wife and mother. That is what Facebook is all about, discussing stuff related to you and your personality. While you might like posting your family’s and children’s pictures on your profile, don’t make it a frequent activity. Go beyond stalking: You may have joined Facebook to stalk your child’s activity, but Facebook is also a wonderful site to connect with your long lost friends. So, keep a watch on them (we know you can’t help it), but focus more on yourself and your friends.

I am not naturally good at studies but I know how to work very hard, so I manage to do well. In my SSC, I did better than I ever thought I could, just by mugging. But, junior college was another story. I just couldn’t get my head around it! My parents were very supportive, initially.

Of course you will do well. Look how you scored in SSC. Just try your best, beti!

HAPPILY EVER AFTER M

arriage may seem like it has taken a backseat with career driven women at the fore of the 21st century, but more and more of today’s youth are settling down and buying into the fairytale of happily ever after at an early age. So, should you tie the knot in your early 20s or wait till your 30s are around the corner? Here are a few advantages of both so that you can make the right decision for yourself.

BaBy sTeps So, you’ve decided that you and your partner are completely in love and there’s absolutely no reason not to get married as soon as possible. After all, who decides what’s ‘too early’ anyway? To make things easier, we’ll say that getting married any time before you’re 25years-old classifies as early. Getting married early means you can start your life together sooner, you’ve got more years together and hopefully, you’re more mature than your single friends. It also means that you can raise your children without being ‘too old’ to be properly involved in their activities and lives, not to mention that having children early gives them a better chance of being healthy. Another good argument made for early marriage is that you’re young enough to put a lifestyle together because you’re not as set in your ways.

I tried. I tried so hard to keep up with the class I became like a book zombie... a BOMBIE!

The checklisT

The waiTing game If there are so many benefits of getting married early, why do people wait to take the big step? One seemingly small but very important reason is career. Trying to build a life together while simultaneously trying to build your career is extremely hard and one of the two is certainly going to take a backseat. What if your job takes you to another city and your partner’s makes it essential for him to stay where he is? Once you’re older, you probably know or at least have a vague sense about which direction your life is headed in and so will your partner, making it easier to start a family and build a home together. You’ll also know what sacrifices you’re willing to make and what you won’t compromise on, leaving less room for regret and resentment in the future. Another advantage about waiting till you’re well-settled is that your children have a chance of a better future because your financial situation is more sound. You’ve been through your changes, you’ve grown as a person and you can be sure that there won’t be too many big surprises in store for you once you start your lives together. Also, you’ll have the added benefit of having a more realistic view about relationships and will have given yourself time to figure out what you really need from a partner.

Regardless of how old you are, you may never be ready to say ‘I do.’ If you’re thinking about getting married, the more you check off on this list, the better prepared you are to take the big leap: l My partner and I have the same views on children. l Both of us are financially independent, or one of us is independent enough to raise a family. l We know where we want to live and agree about it. l We’ve passed the honeymoon stage in our relationship and still want to be with one another. l We both share similar goals. l We’re happy with each other and don’t hope that marriage will change ‘bad habits’ we see in each other. l We’ve met each other’s families and friends and are okay with being around them in the future.

« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear grace,

I am 28-years-old and I’ve just started going out with a guy who I think is ‘The One.’ We’re in a long distance relationship and he recently came to visit me. He’s great and has all the qualities I’m looking for in a partner. The only problem is that he is quite possessive to the extent that he tells me what I can and cannot wear. I really have fallen for him but I want him to stop his

wardrobe advice. Please help. — marisha Fernandes, chembur Dear marisha, While it is easy to get caught up in the first flushes of romance, we’re glad that you realised that this is a problem you need to address. As a 28-year-old woman, we’re sure that by now you’ve developed your own sense of style that suits your age and lifestyle. You do not need a new entrant into

your life controlling your wardrobe based on hemline and neckline. Today he controls your wardrobe, tomorrow what? He needs to address his own insecurities about how you dress and work through it. If in a few months you don’t see an improvement perhaps it’s time to think about whether you need a new wardrobe or a new man. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

But, it was of no use. I did so badly in my exams that now the college says I have to repeat the year.

You are not stupid! What happened? Is it a boy? How could you fail?!

Never mind. Do it again! The thing is

“I don’t want to do it again. I was miserable the whole of last year! I don’t want to work so hard just to fail. I’ve decided I want to be a hair stylist with my own salon. How do I tell my parents? I know they want me to be something great.” — Sad a) Switch to an easier stream and try again. A college degree is important no matter what you’re doing. SSC is not enough. b) It’s hard work being a stylist. If you’re sure, find out which course you want to do, how much it costs etc and show your parents you’re sincerely in it for a career. c) Do a part time hair styling course, but do get your degree as well. LAST WEEK: Natasha should pick Option A: We saw the picture you enclosed. You look great! All you need is to believe it yourself. Confidence is the key to looking good and if you’re low on confidence, fake it till you make it.

TAARAK MEHTA KA OOLTAH CHASHMA COMPLETES 5 YEARS

Asit Kumarr Modi the producer of the successful show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is a happy man. The family comedy show is completing five years on July 28 in a journey littered with stories of success and happy moments. Five year ago, when Modi had decided to make a serial out of a Guajarati column Duniya Nu Oonda Chashmah by columnist Tarak Mehta, he was advised not to work with literary content for television. But he stuck to his beliefs and today stands vindicated. The show has not only completed five years but has also maintained its position amongst the top five shows across channels. Modi says, “The reason for the success of the show is that it is very simple and down to earth. Our story always relates to the common man and revolves around everyday happenings, helping people to connect with the story and characters. They see themselves and the people around them in the characters of the show and have therefore given these characters a place in their homes. We always try to give our audience clean laughter with emotion and drama. However, it is difficult to manage the show on the same level now because now the audience has more expectations from us. As a creative producer my responsibility has grown ten fold.” Congratulations are in order for this wonderful show and its team!

Rashami Desai has a hidden talent of singing. She sings only at home in her close friends’ circle though she never took formal training. She also wants to learn at least one musical instrument. That may be guitar, piano or even flute. She says, “Music is life to me. I love Asha Bhonsle’s peppy songs and Lata Mangeshkar’s songs like ‘Ajeeb Dastaan hai Yeh’. I like singers like Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidi Chauhan’s songs also like ‘Nai Nai si Hai Baatein’ from Parineeta. I started working quite early so did not join any classes. It’s on my wish list. I hope to learn some instrument soon.” Well, Rashami, don’t procrastinate,

The predictable nature of Bharti Infratel’s (BIL) cash flow is a key feature of its business, characterised by long-term contracts, 2.5% annual escalation clauses and heavy exit penalties. A blue-chip client base Bharti Airtel (BAL), Vodafone India and Idea Cellular (Idea) - is another factor driving confidence in cash flow predictability. This, plus focus on data/3G services by operators should boost revenue/site. Outlook and valuation: Our DCF assumptions include 13.9% WACC, with post-tax cost of debt at 7.9%. We assume 0.8x beta, 8% risk-free rate and 8% equity risk premium. Cost of equity (CoE) works out to 14.4%. We have assumed 3% terminal growth. Thus, total EV works out to Rs162.6bn, to which we add BIL’s 42% stake in Indus’ EV at a 25% holding company discount, taking total EV to Rs315bn. Adjusted for net debt, total equity value is Rs363bn, implying a per share value of Rs192, up 25% from the current market price. Hence, we assign a Buy rating to BIL.

Motilal Oswal calls a ‘Buy’ on Crompton Greaves CMP: Rs. 89 Target Rs. 135

Improved traction in consumer business driven by new launches: During FY13, consumer business revenue was up 22% YoY, led by above industry growth rates in most segments: Fans (22% v/s industry growth of 15%), pumps (17% v/s 6%) etc. This was largely driven by new launches like premium range of ceiling fans introduced in FY13, which accounted for ~5% of sales etc. Standalone cash flow from operations at near all-time high; improvement in NWC: Reported cash flows from operations in standalone business have improved to INR6.1b in FY13 (v/s INR3.9b in FY12). This is commendable and is very near to the all-time high levels of INR6.9b in FY10. For the overseas business, NWC improved from 32 days to 24 days and was largely driven by increased customer advances. Other takeaways: i) Exports in FY13 stood at INR8.6b (v/s INR8.9b in FY12) and are down 30% from peak levels of INR12b in FY10. We expect exports to bounce back smartly in FY14 driven by 3.3x increase in orders from Middle East/Africa and commissioning of HT motors factory in Manideep, ii) project business curtailed at 17.5% of revenue in FY13 (v/s 24.5% in FY12), iii) for overseas operations, FY14 to be positively impacted by decline in commodity prices, savings in staff costs (from Belgium) and improvement in ZIV’s performance, iv) Hungary has gained important PQs in Middle East, Europe etc and v) Indonesia commenced manufacturing 500kva transformers and thus would help expand footprint in South East Asia and Pacific region. Valuation and view: CRG’s journey to emerge as a ‘global corporation’ from India continues to face multiple ‘growth pangs’. Phase 1 of the restructuring program has been largely completed, with Hungary reporting positive EBIT margins in 4QFY13 and Belgium back in profitability in April 2013. The key ‘monitorables’ going forward are: losses in Canada, liquidated damages (important swing factor as globally PT factories are full for FY14), rework costs etc. Maintain Buy. Hearing some relaxing music in your bedroom with some fragrant fresh flowers around and a dimly lit candle in the corner could create the simple yet conducive ambience for physical intimacy. Also, freely communicate to your partner that you are as interested as him that the sexual attraction remains alive and that you are actively taking steps to reconnect.

Re-establishing intimacy

I am overworked at office and at home and feel so fatigued that sex doesn’t happen between me and my husband. Because of so much to do and so little time, I don’t care much about my appearance which my husband has brought to my notice and he says that I am letting myself go and not interested in keeping the sexual attraction alive. What should I do? We strongly recommend you to see a sex counsellor together, so that physical intimacy can be re-established. Also, take some time out to pamper yourself at a beauty parlour; time off from office could be planned by both of you to co-ordinate a day/ half a day together doing fun things, and a weekend away from home could be planned once in a while to

Bihar toll rises to 23; govt suspects poisoning

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2013

C

HAPRA/MADHUBANI: The midday meal death toll in Bihar’s Saran district rose to 23 with two more children falling victims on Wednesday after consumption of free food sparking violent protests amid suspicions by the state government it was poisoned. In a related incident, about 50 students of a government middle school in Madhubani district fell ill after eating food under the midday meal scheme. The food was served to children of Navtolia Middle School, Bisfi, near Madhubani, amid allegations by the students that a dead lizard was found in the meal. “The oil used to cook the vegetables was foul-smelling. Doctors found the presence of organic phosphorus in the food and vomit. It means the children were poisoned,” Bihar education minister P.K.

Shahi told PTI in Patna. Shahi did not rule out foul play and said investigations will determine whether the poisoning was accidental or deliberate. As the tragedy sparked a political blame game, Shahi also alleged a political conspiracy against the state government. “Principal Meena Kumari’s husband is close to a political leader,” he said. Shahi suspected the poisoning to be caused by insecticides in vegetable or rice. Union HRD Minister Pallam Raju said an FIR has already been lodged against the school principal. The “food has turned killer”, screamed a woman whose two sons were among the victims, as a pall of gloom hung over Dandaman village. While 16 children, aged below 10 years and studying in Class I to V, had died in Chhapra itself, four others were declared

dead on arrival at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) late last night. Two died at the hospital yesterday morning, official and PMCH sources said. Twenty five others are under medical supervision in PMCH, Superintendent of PMCH Amarkant Jha Azad said. There were emotional scenes as children, their limbs dangling and heads drooping to one side, were brought to a hospital. The tragedy took place at the government primary school in Dahrmasati Gandawan village at Mashrakh block, near Chhapra, 60 km from Patna, on Tuesday. Police said that during the violent protests three police vehicles were damaged by agitators during a bandh call in Saran district over the deaths. Three police vehicles and one belonging to the circle officer were damaged in

Mashrakh block, where the school is located, Saran Superintendent of Police Sujit Kumar said. In the district headquarters at Chapra, the protesters targeted a police bus used for carrying prisoners and broke its glasses. They also damaged one police checkpost, official sources said. The day-long Saran bandh call has been given separately by three parties - RJD, BJP and LJP. Doctors said the ailing children were admitted to ICU of the paediatric department and senior doctors were attending to them round-theclock. One girl Kanti Kumari, a student of class IV and admitted at paediaric ward of PMCH, recalled that when the students did not take much food complaining bad taste yesterday, the school principal allegedly rebuked them and

Consumer-friendly real estate Bill to come up in Parliament

N

EW DELHI: The government is all set to introduce a buyer-friendly real estate legislation which aims to protect consumers and bring transparency in the sector in the Monsoon Session of Parliament. “We will will be introducing the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013, which is very relevant to real sector in the Monsoon Session,” said Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Girija Vyas here on Wednesday. She said the Bill has been approved by the Cabinet and is proposed to be introduced in Parliament. The Monsoon Session of

Parliament will begin on August 5 and the Bill, after its introduction, is likely to be referred to the Standing Committee of Parliament for examination. Describing the Bill as a pioneering legislation which will install standardisation and professionalism in the sector, Vyas said, “It will ensure consumer protection and promotion of the real estate sector through effective regulation and introduction of speedy mechanism for adjudication of disputes.” The real estate sector is one of the largest business and employment generators in the Indian economy. Despite

its mammoth size, the sector does not have a regulator who can balance the interests of the various stakeholders involved though there are a number of legislations at various levels that affect the sector directly or indirectly. Assuring the industry that all their concerns have been taken into account in the Bill, she said, “Any further suggestions, if any, can also be taken on board at the time of examination by the Standing Committee.” “The government is keen to bring reform to the areas which are crucial for the development of housing and real sector,” she said.

An old woman cries over the death of her grandson at the Patna Medical College & Hospital, on Wednesday. asked them to finish the meal. “As we felt pain in stomach the head mistress asked us to go home and I fell unconscious on way back,” she said. The woman cook Manju Devi, who is also being treated at PMCH, said the materials for cooking meal was provided to her by the husband of the principal. Describing the incident as “tragic”, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad blamed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the deaths of innocents. The RJD chief told reporters at PMCH that despite regular complaints about midday meal scheme in different parts

of the state the Nitish Kumar government initiated no action. “Nitish Kumar is busy saving his chair and fighting with its earstwhile NDA partner BJP and has left masses on mercy of god,” Lalu said. In the Madhubani incident, around 50 students complained of stomach ache and began vomitting after eating the midday meal and were then rushed to Bisfi health centre, according to the medical officer A K Prabhat. “All the students are out of danger,” he said. Except for seven children, rest of them have been discharged.

LWAR: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has found some important clues in the Bodh Gaya blasts, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said here on Wednesday. “I can say that investigation is being done seriously, and probing agency (NIA) has found some important clues in the right and positive direction,” Shinde told reporters after laying the foun-

dation stone for CRPF’s ‘Mahila’ battalion base at Bahadurpur Patti-katla in the district. It was not possible to divulge the clues as it could affect the ongoing probe, Shinde said. Ten serial bomb blasts have rocked the Bodh Gaya on July 7, injuring two monks. In the backdrop of a controversy brewing between the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and

the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, Shinde said, “the matter was being investigated and truth will prevail”. The 319-acre land will be used to create a base for the 213 ‘mahila’ battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other training and infrastructure facilities. A sum of Rs 450 cr would be spent on it. PTI

Divij, Raja in quarters of Claro Open

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA: Divij Sharan and Purav Raja, playing their first ATP Tour level event together, scored a comfortable straight-set win over Emilio Gomez and Michael Quintero at the USD 638,085 Claro Open, here. The fourth seeded Indian pair beat Gomez of Ecuador and Quintero of Colombia 6-2 6-2 in the first round of the hard court tournament. The Indians broke Quintero's serve twice in the first set to pocket the first set. They did not get a good start to the second set as Divij was broken in the first game and soon they were down 0-2. However, they shrugged off the adverse start and won six games on the trot to win the set and the match. Divij and Raja won 56 points to 29 of their rivals.

Messi ‘not worried’ over tax fraud case

MADRID: Barcelona star Lionel Messi has said he was unconcerned about accusations of tax avoidance on income generated from the sale of his image rights and was confident his lawyers will solve the case. Last month the 25year-old and his father Jorge Horacio were ordered by a Spanish court to appear for questioning in September as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud. "I'm not worried, I'm always on the sidelines of all of that, just like my dad. We have our lawyers and our advisors who handle these things. We trust in them and they will solve the issue," he said.

Ecclestone charged with bribery

BERLIN: Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone was on Wednesday charged with bribery by German prosecutors. The 82-year-old motor racing magnate has been charged by state prosecutors in Munich in relation to a $44 million (33.6 million euro, £29 million) payment he made to German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky, which was linked to the sale of the Formula One rights in 2006. Last month, Gribkowsky was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail in Munich and Ecclestone has always denied bribing the German to avoid a British tax inquiry into the sale of Formula One, claiming he was blackmailed by Gribkowsky.

sacked former coach Mickey Arthur behind them however, the row over the South African's controversial exit has been reignited in spectacular fashion. Arthur, fired just 16 days before the Ashes, is taking legal action against Cricket Australia. He is seeking up to Aus$4 million (US$3.69 million) in compensation, claiming he was discriminated against because he was South African and "didn't understand the Australian way". According to Australian broadcaster Channel Seven, the legal documents also reveal a major rift in the team between captain Michael Clarke and former vicecaptain Shane Watson. Clarke allegedly described the role of Watson, one of four players dropped by Arthur for the third Test in Mohali in March, as a "cancer". South African called himself the "meat in the sandwich" between the conflicting camps. Arthur, sacked two years before his contract was due to expire, claimed Clarke embraced the

need for discipline, while Watson did not, Channel Seven said. Watson has since been replaced as vice-captain by Brad Haddin but the all-rounder remains in the side as an opening batsman. Wicketkeeper Haddin, whose second innings 71 so nearly led Australia to victory in Nottingham, insisted on Tuesday that all was well with the side. "The Australian dressing room is fine. I don't know how many times we need to answer this," Haddin said. "All the other stuff that we can talk about is white noise so it's not something that has affected the side at all." Key among the things that cost

Australia victory at Nottingham was their top-order batting. Whether new coach Darren Lehmann can do much to improve it is doubtful, although struggling No 3 Ed Cowan could yet find himself dropped and replaced by Usman Khawaja. Australia's tenth-wicket pair were responsible for 228 runs at Trent Bridge, including a world record stand of 163 in the first innings that featured teenage debutant Ashton Agar's 98 -- the highest score by a Test No 11. "Our tail has done really well over a period of time now but it's time for the batters to make sure they're making

India need a separate defence coach: Tirkey N

EW DELHI: Former captain Dilip Tirkey, who was also one of the best defenders of his time, reckons that demands of modern hockey are such that Indian hockey team requires a separate defence coach who need not be a foreigner. Hockey India have initiated a process to find a goalkeeping coach for the side for the Asia Cup. Tirkey said it will benefit Indian hockey if services of a defence coach are also sought for the preparations. "Defence is very important in modern hockey and I have seen lapses in past few tournaments. Defenders and mid-fielders should work hard on it. Defending is not as easy as it appears," Tirkey told PTI Bhasha. "I think India need a defence coach. Chief coach can not handle everything. Modern hockey is very different as tackling is not easy now. There is an offside rule. A defence expert can teach them technical things like positioning, tackling, re-tackling, footwork, marking in a better way," the vet-

Arthur upset at confidential lawsuit being made public

MELBOURNE: Sacked Australia coach Mickey Arthur has been left "extremely upset and disappointed" after his confidential lawsuit against Cricket Australia was leaked to the media leading to a massive controversy. "I am extremely upset and disappointed that confidential documents appear to have been given by others to the media," Arthur said in a statement. "The matters raised in my application to the FWC concerning issues within the Australian cricket team are very sensitive, which is why I was at pains to keep them confidential, especially at this time. I have kept them confidential, unfortunately others have now made them public. I want to stress how important to me the members of the team were, and still remain to me. The welfare of the Australian cricket team is up-most to me," he added.

Dhoni’s close friend passes away

RANCHI: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's close friend and former Ranji teammate Santosh Lal, the inventor of famous helicopter shot, today passed away while undergoing treatment for pancreatitis at a hospital in Delhi. The former Ranji player is survived by parents, wife and a three-year-old daughter. He was 32. The body is expected to arrive here later in the day. An employee of the Railways, Lal was identified with acute pancreatitis and was admitted in a unconscious state at a Ranchi hospital before being airlifted to the national capital on July 15.

ONDON: After just a threeday break since England's thrilling 14-run win over Australia in the first Test at Trent Bridge, the Ashes rivals will meet for the second of a five-match series at Lord's on Thursday. eran, who was called 'the wall of Indian hockey', said. He also said that an Indian can be chosen for the job as there are many former players who were great defenders. "I don't think that we need a foreign coach for this. We have former players like Pargat Singh who had great defending skills," he said.

Tirkey, who had a short stint with Indian team prior to Olympic qualifiers last year, said that 'all rounder' concept in hockey is good but it is tough to apply this in Indian hockey. Former coach Micheal Nobbs was keen on developing players as all rounders who could play at any positions. "It's a good concept but I think it is very tough in Indian context. Teams who have 7–8 world class players can afford it but not India as we have 2 or 3 world class players at a time in our team," said the ace full back who has played a record 412 games. When asked about suggestions for drag flickers who were flop in World Hockey League semifinals in Rotterdam, he said that they should work hard on their strengths. "We must play more and more matches against top teams. Indian drag flickers are talented and I have seen unbelievable flicks from them. They should keep working hard on their strengths," said the Rajya Sabha member from Odisha.

the runs," said Lehmann. England's 115-run win in the last Ashes Test at Lord's four years ago was their first Test success at the 'home of cricket' in 75 years against Australia. The steep slope that runs across the ground can prove challenging for bowlers and batsmen alike unfamiliar with Lord's but Australia opener Chris Rogers has had the advantage of playing there for Middlesex. So too does England fast bowler Steven Finn and, despite finding a slow pitch at Trent Bridge not to his liking, Finn's local knowledge is likely to see him retain his place.

Powell physio hits back over doping blame

PARIS, FRANCE: Asafa Powell's physiotherapist on Wednesday hit back at claims from the Jamaican sprinter that he was to blame for a positive dope test, maintaining that he did not provide him or compatriot Sherone Simpson with banned drugs. Powell and Simpson were among five Jamaican athletes who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs at the country's national trials last month and are currently under investigation in Italy for doping. The revelations -- and a separate positive test for US sprinter Tyson Gay -- have cast a shadow over athletics, just a month before from the sport's world championships in Moscow. Powell and Simpson's agent, Paul Doyle, on Tuesday pointed the finger at the athletes' physio Chris Xuereb, suggesting that contaminated food supplements were to blame.

EW DELHI: Upset with All India Football Federation's tardiness in implementing an ambitious project authored by him, national team technical director Rob Baan is unlikely to seek extension of his two-year contract which ends in October. Baan, who has a wealth of experience as coach and technical director having worked in several countries in these capacities, was the brain behind the 'Lakshya 2022' which aims at India qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. But, with the masterplan he authored last August gathering dust, the 70-year-old Dutchman is understood to have indicated to the AIFF top brass that he would not be renewing his contract which

he signed in October 2011. "It is true Baan is not happy with the non-implementation of masterplan Lakshya 2022. So, he is unlikely to extend his contract," an AIFF official told PTI on condition of anonymity. "Though he has not spoken openly, we have heard through other people that he is not likely to extend his contract," he said. Baan could not be reached as his phone remained switched off. Baan has an annual package of Rs 2 crore and according to AIFF sources, he has in his contract the liberty of working only 15 days in a month and the AIFF will have to provide him four to five air tickets for travelling home in a year. He had been critical of the lack of national team training centres and elite academies.

Remembering the voice of Indian Cricket J

By S Kishore

uly 18 marks the first death anniversary of Suresh Saraiya, the voice of Indian cricket who provided a distinct and different style to cricket commentary on radio. Sureshbhai, as he was affectionately called, was indeed the voice of cricket for many who followed his inimitable commentary on All India Radio (AIR) for well over four decades. He painted a vivid picture of India’s historic victories and losses in the minds of radio listeners; be it from Auckland, Trinidad, London, Durban or his very own beloved Mumbai where he learnt the nuances of the game. It was only befitting that this broadcasting legacy which began at the Brabourne Stadium in November 1969 when India took on the Bill Lawry led Australian team, ended with the India – West Indies Test at the Wankhede Stadium in November 2011; a match which ended in an exciting draw off the last ball. His crowning glory, undoubtedly, was when he completed a century of Tests on the microphone for AIR during the

India – New Zealand match at Nagpur (20th to 23rd Nov. 2010). Saraiya’s passion for cricket was second to none and no matter whichever part of the world he was doing commentary, he always ensured that he was fully prepared much before the first ball was bowled. One must remember that for most part of his broadcasting career, he didn’t have information at his fingertips like most of us have nowadays. Consequently, the big log book that he meticulously maintained and always carried to matches was his finest ally. Even though Saraiya did a few commentary assignments for television, he essentially remained a radio man till the very end.

He is a two-time NBA champion, an eight-time NBA All Star and an Olympics gold medalist, the 6 feet 11 inches CHRIS BOSH has seen it all. The Miami Heat hoopster who is in the city as part of the NBA program to develop the game in India, spoke exclusively to NEIL JOSHI about the future of game in the country, especially how to develop India’s roadmap to improve their rankings. He also dwelt on how it felt to be a part of the gold winning Olympic team in Beijing and on Miami’s Heat consecutive victories in the NBA Championship.

How do you propose that basketball should be developed in India as the game is still experiencing early days in the country? This is why we are here and why we want to interact with possible fans and show the people how easy it is to play. And that is the hard part, you need to show them how easy it is to pick up a ball and put a couple of baskets and play a couple of games. You will hopefully see more guys playing and once a love is developed for basketball then all things will fall in place.

What prompted you to take to the sport? My dad played recreational leagues, church leagues and so I was exposed to it at an early age and I played with my friends and it was just fun for me. In the process I just grew taller, which I didn’t think would happen but I did. I was able to develop in to something useful and I was playing in the NBA of which I am very proud.

What is the aim of your visit and what do you want to achieve with this? My sole purpose is to have a good time. If you are having fun, all things fall in place. I just want to enjoy the culture and interact with my fans and ask the fans to watch the Heat more.

There have been a number of NBA players who have come to India to promote the game. With a limited fan base and limited know-how of the players, do you think that the player of your calibre can make a difference? I know they show the games out here and some of the people are familiar with the

What football, baseball and basketball is to Americans, cricket is to India. How difficult is to make inroads in the country and make them switch away from cricket? I don’t think it would be a big challenge. Some kids can be serious about the sport. As long as kids have fun you can do both. If you like cricket, play cricket and if you like basketball play that or you just do both. As long as you are playing with your friends and being active and as long as you are having a good time, it is good. India is 56th in in the FIBA ranking, with the USA topping the charts. What approach would you take to drastically improve the rankings? We have to start somewhere. First you need to have a team and then develop it. On the international perspective, it is important to have players and keep them together for a certain period. Since, India has a national team, we can now focus on getting better and continue to compete against each other and other countries. As times goes on and if you feel you are getting better and if you do that, the sky is the limit.

How big was the Beijing gold at the Olympics? Big… big. We were expected to win. If we didn’t win it would have been a disappointment. I was fortunate to be on a team to bring back that passion for international basketball for the United States. For a while we were taking it for granted and thought that we could just show up and win but the rest of the world was catching up and everybody is getting better. That is what competition is all about. Once guys started seeing more and more of basketball, guys started getting better. We had to deal with that competition and it was good for the whole world to compete each other.

Spain plays a different style as compared to the USA, how different is their approach to the game? Those guys have been playing with each other since they were teenagers. Not only are they a good team, they have got great individual talent. They have a lot of guys who have played in the NBA and are playing in the

NBA and have got on the radar a lot. The fact they have the confidence, they can compete every year and we always have to beat them to accomplish our goals. We enjoy the competition with them and I know they love it too.

Indians lack in the physical aspect of the game. How do you feel India should overcome this? I have seen a few six footers. It is a country of a billion people. As far as athleticism is concerned, you have to develop that too. Once, kids see and know that they can do something, they will do it. It is like the brain, once it knows

INTERVIEW you can do something, there is no stopping you. There are lot of drills and if you work hard you can become much better and anybody can do it. Out of a billion people, you can definitely find six and seven footers.

How difficult was it to defend the title rather than winning it in the previous year? It was very difficult to defend the title. We got every team’s big shot everyday. It is difficult to play when people want what you have. When you are on the top of the hill, everyone is tagging you and trying to get there. And you just have to deal with your own mindset and doing the process all over again is difficult. I am proud of our guys for answering the challenge and we were doing the best job possible and I am happy to win it.

Most would consider the Heat’s game against the Spurs was the closest. How mentally draining was the win? It was very mentally draining. It was the most as the sport has ever been to me and the reward was great. I was extremely proud to get out alive. It was a great feeling. If you want to win, you need to go through things like that. It was difficult but it was worth it. Do you fee basketball as a way of life for you? It is a way of life for me. Most of the things that I have done has been rotated around basketball. I have been playing for a long time now and I am proud of what I have done and what the sport has given me.

NBA is promoting basketball in a big way in India with a number of players from top teams making their presence felt. With the game at a nascent stage in the country, add to it the fact that there are a few followers and fans of the game, how much impact you believe such a visit as yours would have an impact on India? The game of basketball is growing and the people love it. To me, it is the greatest sport in the world. People have no choice but to love it. The NBA is here trying to grow the game and to show the people how great it is. I feel the people in India will be attracted to it and once they get a hang of it, people won’t give it up.

players. If you are able to see your favourite player, that creates more passion for the game. You also get to interact with lot of the players and ask them questions especially from the grassroot level because they have started to watch the games closely and they know how popular you are.
