What are your expectations from Dhoom 3? Varsha Ganesh Student I think that with the hype that has been created about the movie, it will be a big hit.

Vivek Viswanathan Working Professional I am not sure what to expect. It might be just another action flick but with big names and lots of marketing. Amey Jaju Working Professional With it being marketed so well and being called a movie with the most expensive song et al, it better be worth the public’s money. Punit Bhavsar Working Professional I think there will be lots of stunts and action to watch out for. Also, it will be fun seeing Aamir Khan in an action packed role. Suresh Raja Banker I liked Dhoom the best. The second part was more about gadgets and technology and less about bikes and speed. I don’t know what the USP of this movie is; maybe Aamir in a different role.

1) Wrapped in Red – Kelly Clarkson (Sony Music) Rs.399 This is probably the biggest album of this season, which debuted at #3 on the Top 100 charts. Clarkson, first of all is the only title holder of the first ever American Idol to have released a Christmas album. The album has a bunch of traditional tracks and a few original compositions as well. The title track, Wrapped in Red is a heartwarming piece and is a definite replay. Her take on Silent Night is just the way it should be, though she is accompanied by guest vocalists Trisha Yearwood and Reba McIntyre. The other highlights would definitely be Underneath the Tree, the

son’s all-time classics as well as two original songs. Since their debut effort in 2011, they have recorded three albums and A Family Christmas is their fourth. The album offers up 12 holiday

has played it safe and has stuck to performing classic renditions of Christmas carols such as I'll be Home for Christmas and The Christmas Song. She has not tried improvising or changing the tempo of the songs and rather it’s her voice that we would like to cherish. She also has The Little Drummer Boy backed by the Overtones, a perfect well pitched piece. However the album includes two new duets, a virtual duet with the late Elvis Presley on O Come, All Ye Faithful, which has the two talented vocalists giving off their best lines for Christmas. The song is also backed by a choir during the chorus. The other duet is with Johnny Mathis on a restandards, including Angels We recording of his 1976 hit cover Have Heard on High, Carol of the of When a Child Is Born. Don’t also miss out on the slow and steady pace of We Three Kings, a duet with the soulful R&B biggie Mary J. Blige. But the highlight is his virtual duet with Ella Fitzgerald on What are you doing New Year’s Eve? Silent Night has a beautiful children's choir to liven things up and the album’s last track Auld Lang Syne has impressive bagpipes. 5) Sending you a Little Christmas – Johnny Mathis (Sony Music) Rs.399 While the list for all time Christmas classics by legends may seem end-

The Piano Guys' video-take on One Direction's hit, What Makes you Beautiful, featuring all five musicians playing the piano together, took YouTube by storm when it was posted in July 2012, and has received over 25 million views to date. 4) Merry Christmas, Baby – Rod Stewart (Universal Music) Rs.295 If you look at the discography of this British singer-songwriter, you will find that this is his 28th studio

album. The singer who gave us Some Guys Have All The Luck, Downtown Train and other such toppers, brings on his first ever Christmas album, featuring tracks like Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Blue Christmas and White Christmas. Rod uses his famous husky tones to interpret these classic Christmas tunes. With age, Stewart’s voice has that crackling feel, and though he brings in a few guest artists on the album, we find that even without them, he fares well. David Foster produced this album, it sounds great. The arrangements which are beautiful, are a wee bit mellow. Where the album really shines is the more up-

less, Johnny Mathis’ earlier seven Christmas albums still remain the best of all, up there with Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, and Jim Reeves. It’s his distinctive voice that commands a lot of respect when he is singing with the younger generation on the album. The album has 12 songs and among them a few solos and a few duets, including a melancholy medley of I’ll Be Home for Christmas and White Christmas featuring Vince Gill and Amy Grant, a fine version of Do You Hear What I Hear with Susan Boyle, and a bright, country-flavored Home for the Holidays with The Jordanaires. While he should’ve recorded the title track himself as a solo effort, Mathis takes the help of pianist Jim Brickman. Other favorites that could be on your list would be The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) with Billy Joel, and the slow paced Mary’s Boy Child once again a duet this time with Latino singer Gloria Estefan. Lastly Merry Christmas, Darling is reminiscent of The Carpenters version. This is an album for the young and old alike, anyone who enjoys holiday music. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

HRISTMAS has come to Mumbai earlier than usual this year, in spite of the high prices and the inflation. Shops already have their wintry looking decorations, and most started selling cribs and ornaments for Christmas trees a week ago. Hill Road at Bandra West, Colaba Causeway, Crawford Market, which has many wholesalers, and even minor retailers and grocery stores all across the city and suburbs, are sporting colourful Christmas decorations displayed for sale. Streets too have vendors competing with bargain prices. Our lensman Vishwanath Salian went around the city capturing Mumbai’s Christmas.

The streets of Hill Road in Bandra are abuzz and aglow with Christmas stars and decorations and ornaments.

he Khandeshwar police have arrested two devotees of the Akhand Harinaam Saptaah of the Varkari Sampradhyay for attacking police officials yesterday at around 10:30pm. Janardhan Thorat, Investigating Officer, Khandeshwar police station said, “Two days ago the Akhand Harinaam Saptaah of the Varkari Sampradhyay began, where as per the laws, no loud speakers must used after 10 pm. While the group followed the rules well for the first two days, yesterday at around 10:10 pm, we received a complaint about the speakers still being used. We immediately reached the spot and asked the devotees to end the event for the day, which they refused to do. So, one of our constables unplugged the wire of one of the speakers.” The constable’s action irked the 200 devotees who entered into a fight with the police. Since, the police had completed their duty of attending to the complaint they left for the police station. The devotees then reached the

Wasim’s uncle Abdul Rasheed Mohammad Shafi rushed to the police station around 7 pm. He said: “Both the boys were sitting inside the police station with their bodies badly bruised all over, but cops had not taken any action. Later, the cops asked us to take them for a medical check-up at VN Desai hospital in Santacruz where the doctor mentioned that they had been assaulted by a group of men. Gyaneshwar Dhakle, father of Ajay said, “My son was sitting naked when I reached the police station. I gave my elder son’s clothes to him. This is brutal ‘goondagiri’ but no case has been made.” An FIR has been filed against four BJP partymen.

RAPING AND FLYING AWAY Continued from pg 1 « chatting on net and phoning each other. Between August 2012 and March 2013, they had intimate relations at his accommodations in Delhi and Mumbai, after which the victim became pregnant while living with him in Delhi. The split occurred when she refused to abort the child as demanded by Patel, and insisted on the marriage he had promised her. She then returned to Mumbai and lodged an FIR at the Borivli police station in November, but Patel remained untraceable. The case was then transferred to Crime Branch Unit XI which finally traced Patel to a rented flat in Borivali on December 18, from he was picked up. He has booked under various sections of the IPC including 376, 377, 420 and produced in court today.

renovation work in October this year. But on November 23, some security guard landed up at his hotel and asked him to stop the renovation work, saying he had been sent by Sub-Engineer Pravin Dhavle, and demanded Rs.25,000, on behalf of Dhavle. Getting no response from the hotelier, Sub-Engineer Dhavle sent across BMC contractor Krishna Maruti Pawar who met the hotel security guard and gave him Dhavle’s mobile number, officials said. The hotel owner however refused to meet Dhavle. Angry at the hotelier’s behavior, BMC Contractor Pawar pasted a notice on the wall of the hotel on December 6, wherein he mentioned that there were various complaints against the hotel’s renovation work received at the BMC office and told the security guard that Sub Engineer Pravin Dhavle would visit the hotel after three days. After meeting the hotelier personally, Pawar said there was no need to worry and he would find some way, if a

payment of Rs.4,00,000 was made. The hotelier bought time saying he would pay the amount in two installments. As the hotelier was doing the renovations legally and did not want to pay bribes, he lodged a complaint against the four corrupt officials and got them arrested. The ACB caught contractor Krishna Pawar and Satej Patil at Jahaj Bhavan in Fort, and on their information, Sub Engineer Pravin Dhavle and Junior Engineer Sachin Sonawane were arrested from their A ward office. Talking to the ADC, the DG of the ACB, Pravin Dixit, said that our officers have done outstanding work and after these arrests, more people will come forward to raise their voice against the corruption in this ward. On Tuesday, the ACB arrested NCP corporator Ashok Tiwari, who headsWard No. 1 in the MBMC and ward officer Sunil Yadav, as they accepted a Rs.1,50,000 bribe from, Mohammed Ashraf Aslam Qureshi, to allow illegally constructed bungalows on the Uttan-Dhavgi Road.

While hospital authorities refused to divulge any details, Dr. Sagar Sakle, spokesperson of the Bombay Hospital said, “The case is with the police. You can talk to them. This is a sensitive case and we cannot divulge any details. Investigations are being done by the police and only after they are complete, can we make any comment. Right now, we cannot tell you anything.” On being asked the reason for the arrest of one of its doctors, Dr. Sakle said, “Whatever you have said is true.” Dr. Rajkumar Patil, Deputy Director of Bombay Hospital remained unavailable for comment. The case is being handled by the Azad Maidan police station and Dr. Shah has been booked under sections 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to

screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66(A) of Information Technology Act (sending of any information through a communication service that is ‘grossly offensive’ or has ‘menacing character’). Giving details about the case, Ravindra Sisve, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I said, “Dr Yash Shah, who is from Pune, has done such an act once before. He used to keep a mobile phone on the wall of the washroom on the seventh floor and used to videotape women there. On December 15, 2013, he was doing the same thing when the lady doctor inside the washroom noticed the mobile phone. She immediately got hold of the phone and saw images of herself as well as another colleague of hers. She reported the matter to the police and Dr. Shah was arrested on Tuesday evening. N

avi Mumbai’s first metro which was expected to start in 2014 has been delayed again as the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has yet not shortlisted the consortium to whom the tender for system work, including electrical and mechanical work, will be allotted. The deadline was extended from October 7 to October 30 by the town planning authority as few other firms had showcased their interest in the project. After a delay of two months, the authority is still in the process of finalising the contract to lay the tracks and manage the signaling and telecommunication work. Mohan Ninawe, Chief Public Relations Officer, CIDCO

said, “Out of the six consortiums three had been shortlisted, but the process of technical evaluation is still underway. After it is completed, the agency will carry out the financial evaluation”. ”By December end we expect the technical evaluation to be completed, after which the process of financial and administrative work will be carried out, and then the tender will be allotted to one consortium,” he added. An interest in the system work has been expressed by Larsen & Toubro, Ansaldo and Alstom. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had inaugurated the first metro railway project of the satellite city in May 2011 which the town planning authority was directed to complete before 2014.

rom the first time I met Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare, I found myself unimpressed by the Lokpal idea. This was before Anna was arrested and before the Ram Leela hunger strike that made him so famous and started an anti-corruption movement across the country. It was at a panel discussion organised by Rahul Kanwal for Headlines Today in Delhi‘s Kamani Auditorium. The hall was filled with supporters of Anna’s movement who jeered and screeched abuse every time I tried to point out that a new law would make no difference to levels of corruption. When I drew attention to China not having been able to control corruption despite corrupt officials being sentenced to death, the jeering got so aggressive that we had to stop recording the program while Kejriwal tried to calm his supporters down. I mention this only to emphasise that I have been a conS many as six lakh people participating in scientious objector from day one and so it is a referendum in Nagpur voted for the cre- not now that the Lokpal bill is about to beation of a separate state of Vidarbha. cided. In India it took more than twenty years for the terrorists responsible for the 1993 bombings in Mumbai to be brought to justice. In the case of Ajmal Kasab, things moved faster, but the men who planned the 26/11 attacks remain free and unpunished. Why is it that India is incapable even of doing to Hafiz Saeed what the United States did to Osama bin Laden? These are things I bring up only to point out that a justice system that takes this long to punish terrorists will naturally be more lax when it comes to corrupt officials. That is our real problem. When Kejriwal was asked about the need for a Lokpal in a recent television interview he said that the Lokpal would make a difference because it would be a better institution than the institutions that currently handle corruption cases in India. How can he guarantee this? Will it not be the same petty officials that will work for the Lokpal as work today for the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the enforcement department of the Finance Ministry? Having had some dealings with these en-

thing to stop this either because any attempt to bring these officials to book usually causes them to target you even more. So just think what is likely to happen when they transfer their duties to a new institution that gives them even more powers of search, seizure and punishment?

Self-righteous individuals

The Lokpal idea was thought up by a group of self-righteous individuals whose contempt for institution building was reflected in their original demand to have only Magsaysay award winners on the Lokpal board. Institutions are built by systems being put in place and not by high-minded individuals, but those who have never had anything to do with governance cannot know this. Nor can they know that democracy is not deepened by going to the people every time you want to make a decision about something. It is deepened when better people get elected to legislatures and when these elected representatives are held to account for the things they do and not do. If Mr. Kejriwal took up the responsibility of forming a government in Delhi with support from the Congress Party, he would discover very soon that it is simply not possible to make laws or govern at all if he continues to ‘go back to the people’. Could he be doing this at the moment because he knows how difficult it will be to live up to his high principles once he becomes the Chief Minister of Delhi? It is India’s misfortune that mainstream political parties have acquired such a bad reputation for venality and corruption that they are trying to redeem themselves by passing a law that will do no more than add another layer of bureaucracy to a system already Tavleen Singh slowed down by red tape. technological world. There are many quick ways to eliminate what we don’t want. A sister wants to kill her younger sister because she does not get along with her. I think on television you watch programmes like ‘Power Rangers’. In that series, Power Rangers, you have the power to destroy everything that you don’t like, and of course there are many things that we don’t like around us. There was a little girl who pointed

MATTER & SPIRIT a toy gun at her mother and said, “I want to shoot you down.” When we have something wrong within our body, we have the tendency to open our body, cut it, and throw it out. We call it surgery. We want to do it quickly. We don’t know that there are many other ways. We don’t know how to embrace the block of pain in us, to take care of it, so that it can be transformed. We only think of throwing away, eliminating with guns, with knives. What a civilization we have. Therefore we have to think deeply about this and watching television can increase our bad tendency of wanting to eliminate whatever we don’t want. Television can increase your craving, your fantasy, and it does not help you to understand the hardships, the difficulties, of your

parents and so on. Many programmes can increase your violence, your anger, your wish to eliminate whatever you don’t like. Your inability to embrace, to forbear, to help. That is why we need to look deeply. I urge that the whole family get together and have a deep discussion on this. After five days of discourse, the girl was transformed deeply because we especially took care of her. With all young participants, we had a very good programme at that retreat. When she got back to school she wrote a story about David and Angelina that got her a very high note from the teacher. That evening when her baby sister cried instead of kicking her or beating her, she said, “Be quiet. I am here for you my sister.” She practiced the second mantra, by herself, alone. I can see in that little girl there are so many good seeds, but because of watching so many bad television programmes, the good seeds had not been able to manifest. These programmes only water the bad seeds in her. Going into a retreat where the setting is quite different, she was able to practice some quiet breathing, walking, surrounded by people who are calm. All these things have helped touch the good seeds within the child. Five days, only five days, helped her to transform and she became a good human being. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Unpardonable nonsense

WHAT A PITY! James, a prisoner in a Ghana jail, has been denied permission to bid his young son the final farewell and our government has turned a deaf ear to his family’s pleas.

Pawar’s a cunning leader THIS refers to ‘Stumbling blocks’ (ADC, Nov. 4) on the NCP attending the meeting of all the non-Congress and non-BJP parties ostensibly to keep communalism away but in reality to throw its weight behind them to make sure that it will be in the reckoning in case the Third Front gets a favourable verdict in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. It is no secret that the Maratha strongman, Sharad Pawar, still nurtures ambitions to become the Prime Minister and has voiced his opposition to Rahul Gandhi being projected as the Congress’ PM-candidate citing that he lacks administrative experience. He would have had his chance if he had not parted company with the Congress on his disapproval of Sonia Gandhi due to her foreign origin. Now, even if he merges his NCP with the Congress, it is doubtful if he will get to become the PM. And so he is clearly dilly-dallying with all the other parties in the hope that, being the most experienced politician, he may get their nod to head the government. Only time will tell whether he will succeed in his efforts.

Great expectations from AAP ‘Accelerator, not brake…’

Taking voters for granted THIS has reference to your article ‘BJP leaders run to make Modi’s ‘Statue of Liberty’ a reality’ (ADC, Dec.16). When will the BJP and other political parties realise that the general public can no longer be influenced by meaningless populist gestures that make no improvement whatsoever in OF their daily lives? The LETTER THE DAY common man has become better educated and politically savvy during the past few decades. He recognises that a gargantuan - and probably grotesque, if past examples are anything to go by - statue of Sardar Patel is just a publicity stunt and a waste of taxpayers’ money. It is no substitute for curbing inflation, better infrastructure and public services that the public are beginning to realise they are entitled to. The BJP is currently cashing in on the anti-Congess sentiment in the country, but they would be foolish to take voters for granted.

This gives rise to a few pertinent questions. Is the Congress not a “secular” party to which the Communists themselves had extended outside support after the 2004 general elections, till they parted company over the Nuclear 123 deal? Has the Congress now turned “communal” during the last decade or so? If the “secular” votes are thus divided among different camps, then how they would be able to defeat the “communal” forces led by the BJP? — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

EVEN the Master Blaster didn’t have such dream debut as did Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent assembly elections in Delhi. The only person probably who can boast of a better one is Azharuddin who hit three centuries in his first three tests. No one could judge the under current running in favour of AAP as they were hardly vocal or visible like the two major parties. Delhi was humming ‘AAP jaisa koi meri zindigi mein aaye toh politics badal jaye“ but the pundits failed to listen. After the spectacular showing one may find the whole nation humming the tune giving jitters to the National parties before the general election in 2014. For the first time, Delhi showed a choice in AAP as till now the voters had no choice but to choose between the crooks or dacoits.AAP now has a more responsible role to play as they have shown a new way which will not be so easy to walk. People’s expectations from them have soared very high., One hopes they don’t succumb to the pressure of it.

THE rupee and stock markets are on a free fall due to wrong diagnosis by the Finance Minister and the govt. in power as far as steps taken to control them. All steps seems to have failed as the fall has been steep and one wonders if the fall could have been less if no curb had been put by the govt. Stock market and rupee movement works on ‘demand and supply’; they will find their own levels and stabilise in the days to come. Accelerator and brake are key tools in an automobile and have to be used for a specific purpose to propel a vehicle to move forward. The same is true of our economy and the govt. is actually concentrating on the ‘brakes’ to curb rupee fall when it should be concentrating on the ‘accelerator’ to propel our economy and growth. IT was shocking to note that Sachin Tendulkar did not enjoy training during his iconic career in international cricket. Training methods really help players to prune their skills and Tendulkar was having other ideas. Perhaps he would like to last longer in international cricket. He must have stored his energy for the tougher tests ahead in Test match cricket. Anyway, he should not have revealed this after his retirement. Since players are trying to avoid training session with lame excuses, such a revelation by Tendulkar will make them more lazy. And if it is difficult for AAP to rule in this condition, then same applies to other parties too. DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL

Jaidev and Kavita Bhasin live a middle-classed lifestyle in Southall, England, along with their son, Sunny. During the mid80s Jaidev was a star football player for the all-Asian Southall Football Club, and their team was very successful so much so that it generated hatred from opposing mainstream Caucasian teams, who attacked Jaidev and the team’s coach, Tony Singh. This spelled the end of the team, and the ground was then rented out for weddings and birthday parties. Jaidev wanted Sunny to follow in his footsteps, but Sunny believed himself to be British and joined the Aston Football Club. When the time came for selection, Sunny, often referred to as ‘Paki’, was sidelined. Embittered, he joined the Southall Club. B4U, 9 p.m

Flatter your figure There’s nothing that will make you look more smashing than a dress that perfectly suits your shape. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry make your festive dress shopping easier with picks to perfectly match your body type

H

ave you ever gone shopping for dresses but found that the pretty ones you short-listed look a lot less flattering once you try them on? It is because you picked out a dress that doesn’t suit your body’s shape. Buying dresses that are tailored for your body type can make you look slimmer and extremely stylish. Have a look at our picks of the must-have dresses this season, for every body type.

hourglass

red hot

This type of body is the easiest to dress because of your narrow waist and well proportioned bust and hips. Petite hourglass figures can get away with wearing turtlenecks but for most, high necklines look too busty. If you’re top heavy opt for darker colours. Pencil styles and good fits are best. Avoid excess fabric as it adds unnecessary bulk. your celebrity style icon: Scarlett Johansson

We know we said opt for darker colours, but this deep red dress from Bebe will look gorgeous on a curvy figure. Price On request

Pear

With this body type, your hips are wider than your shoulder and fat tends to accumulate on your thighs and lower body. You should accentuate your elongated waist and don’t wear short dresses as they’ll make you look stocky. Don’t shy away from shoulder pads and catchy colours and make sure the tops of your dresses have proper detailing while the bottoms are solid. your celebrity style icon: Beyonce

aPPle

If you have an apple body type, your weight tends to settle on your stomach and you might have a larger bust. You should pick empire line dresses and V-necks that break up the size of your chest. Make sure the material can hold its own and don’t be afraid to play with patterns. A tie at the waist is a good idea to give it some definition and camoflauge a tummy. If you like pleats, wear them only below the belly. For smaller busts, straight necks are also fine. your celebrity style icon: Catherine Zeta Jones

If you want to opt for a simple, black party dress, pick this one from Avirate. The yellow belt at the waist adds a pop of colour and the square neck is a good option for your body type. Price `4,200

Because you lack curves, details are important. We love the top and side detail on this dress from Pernia’s Pop Up Shop. Price `17,500

Slinky satin, when it’s loose fitting, can hide bumps and lumps. Splurge on this pretty red dress from Turquoise & Gold. Price `10,000

athletic

Athletic bodies are quite common, with a straighter look and not too many curves. You might be flat chested, flat bottomed or just average. Opt for straight skirted looks, shift dresses and strong blocks of colour. High necklines look great on you and halter necks are also a good idea. Don’t shy away from front detailing. your celebrity style icon: Natalie Portman

weddinG wows!

Priyanka Singh gets Celina Rajamanickam, makeup artist at Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, to tell us about the latest makeup trends for the wedding season and common makeup follies committed by the bride (and groom!)

What trends are a hit with brides this wedding season? The minimalistic look is in vogue this season. Apply a sheer base with soft, natural tones, smokey eyes, a bold upper line with nude lips and bronzed cheekbones, with a touch of soft, natural blush tones. Are any ramp makeup trends being used during the wedding season? Designer Sabyasachi seems to be making great headway this season. His signature style consists of a good blend of modern and vintage. You can see natural radiant base with very little blush, sophisticated eye liner, minimal or nude eye shadow with the emphasis on the lips. Since so many cosmetics are used during the wedding, how can a bride take care of her skin? A bride’s skin is under constant stress during the wedding preparations. Considering that, you should start your skin care regime two months in advance. If your skin is sensitive and prone to acne, consult a beauty therapist at least three to four months prior to your wedding. This helps you understand your skin better so you can get the right treatment for your skin type and condition. A healthy diet and a lot of sleep is also important. Brides often overdo the makeup on their wedding day. How can you avoid looking too made up? The most fundamental rule to follow is to match the foundation to your skin tone, instead of opting for a lighter foundation. Avoid using too much shimmer all over the face. If your eye makeup is going to be heavy, keep your lips and cheeks subtle and vice-versa. Keep your look as natural as possible and emphasise only one element or feature of your face that you like the most. Which products should a bride use and which should be avoided? If you want traditional and heavy makeup, ensure that you use long-lasting, waterproof and smudge-proof products. Especially with foundations, you need to choose something that’s long-lasting and blends in well with your skin, so that the foundation doesn’t melt or crease. I recommend MAC’s pro-long wear foundation. Consult a professional makeup artist prior to your wedding date and go for a trial. Avoid products with too much perfume or alcohol to prevent irritation for sensitive skin. How do you prevent makeup from slipping due to sweat? Use a good primer before applying foundation. Use long-lasting, smudgeproof and waterproof products. Set the makeup with setting powder and a fixing spray. Use colours with high pigmentation to stay on for a longer time. Keep blotting tissues handy to dab off sweat if you’ll be in a humid or outdoor environment. Keep a compact and lipstick with you for quick touch-ups.

>> According to Celina (inset), smokey eyes with subdued makeup is a popular trend this wedding season

Should the groom wear any makeup? Yes, as makeup does create a noticeable difference in pictures. Focus on an extremely light coverage with a foundation, concealing where needed and finish off with a brush of tinted loose powder (matching his skin colour).

Hoping for an oscar Kush, a 25-minute short film on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. Rohit Pramar gets talking to the star of the movie, Sonika Chopra about the short film and her future plans

I

t was 1984. Following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, anti-Sikh riots had sprung up in many parts of the nation. Based on this, Kush, a short film, revolves around the story of a school picnic, where a teacher (Gita) tries to protect Kush, the only Sikh child in the group. The role of Gita is portrayed by Sonika Chopra in the movie, which has also been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. We catch up with the actress to talk about her experience in the movie, her acting career and more.

Tell us about your background. Since I’ve lived all over India, I consider myself a nationally integrated girl! I have also been an advertising copywriter in the past. How did acting happen for you? Acting has been a childhood passion for me, but it’s only now that I’m indulging myself seriously! This is not my first film and there are a couple of projects in the pipeline. This is my first international project that’s already completed and is competing in the international festival circuit. How was the experience shooting for the film? It never felt like a short film or a small budget film. The scale, manner of shooting and vision was always amazingly large. The director, producer, cast and crew put their heart, soul and love into it and I think it’s because of the love that

God is blessing us with all these accolades. I feel director Shubhashish Bhutiani has done a brilliant job with his first film and the producer, Sanjay Bhutiani, is his pillar of strength. The short film has been to many film festivals. How has the response been so far? Overwhelming! Shubhashish (the director), seems to be God’s favourite child and so far, he has won an award at every festival he has been to. Please join us in praying that the rest of Kush’s journey is equally fruitful. Did you expect the film to get shortlisted for the Oscars? What are your expectations now? (Laughs) This is beyond our biggest dreams and I thank God for his generosity! And my expectations? Well, they are the same as any other Indian — to bring the golden statuette home! Fingers, legs, heart, all crossed. Is the film going to have a release in India? The makers of the film would have a better idea about this. It’s too soon to comment on that. What’s next for you? There are definitely lots of good doors opening up for me now and I’m considering the best way forward with proper guidance.

>> The short film Kush is based on the anti-Sikh riots that took place in India in 1984. Sonika plays the role of a teacher in the movie

It’s the season for indulgence and it looks like Bhagyashree plans to tuck into a lot of delicious goodies because she’s worn her sequined bib! The bling on her dress just looks out of place. Next time, wear an LBD with a sequined jacket to nail the look.

This illusion dress is demure but sadly makes Claudia look washed out. She should have accessorised better with a few pops of colour, even if it is just red lipstick! That bag is also very tacky. Come on Claudia, it’s time to get a big girl bag!

If the illusion was to look like you escaped the circus, well done Sheeba! But, on the red carpet you’re going to need a much better magician. The dress is terrible and doesn’t flatter her shapely figure at all. Also the matchymatchy bag and shoes are overkill.

« 5 ways to rock: waistcoats for women Waistcoats are extremely versatile. Shirley Mistry tells you how to wear them right 1. tHe RigHt LeNgtH Ensure that you get a waistcoat that’s of the perfect length for you. As the name suggests, the waistcoat should end exactly at your waist. When too long, the waistcoat can weigh down your entire look, making you look drab. And when too short, it creates the illusion of a high waist that can make you seem disproportionate.

2. cOcONUt sHiMMeR BODY BUtteR The best part about this glitter from Body Shop, is that a little goes a really long way. It smells delicious, is light on the skin and moisturises really well while adding a gentle touch of glitter. Price: `1,313

2. tHe RigHt fit Now this may seem like we are asking you to be too nit-picky, but trust us, it will make a world of difference. Pick a waistcoat that is cut according to your body shape, which means, avoid waistcoats with a straight cut and opt for one that matches your curves. Also, make sure the armholes aren’t too large. Fabric peeking from the armhole of the waistcoat kills the overall look.

3. tHe RigHteOUs BUtteR All you need is a dot to sparkle and shine with this Soap & Glory cream + powder. It comes with a powder puff so you can lightly dust over the cream with the powder for a little extra oomph. It contains tahitian monoi, shea, cocoa and rosehip seed oil to firm and smoothen. Price `1,238

3. Mix & MatcH Whoever told you a waistcoat can be worn only with trousers and a shirt was being quite myopic. There are several ways to wear a waistcoat that go far beyond the traditional way. Pair a denim waistcoat with a floral maxi to jazz it up. Also, wear a leather waistcoat with a feminine dress to add a little grunge to your look.

4. veRY iRResistiBLe Givenchy’s Sensation Body Veil is a scented moisturising cream that adds a little sparkle and glitter to your skin while keeping it well moisturised round the year. Price `3,659

4. PRiNts Move beyond solid colours and experiment with printed waistcoats. A sequinned waistcoat or one with brocade, when paired with a plain black dress or palazzos is a great way to add glamour to your look — perfect for the many end-of-the-year parties. Also, colourful, embroidered waistcoats, when paired with a plain kurta, can instantly make your look quirky, yet party perfect.

5. tRUe staR  The Beyoncé sponsored True Star range by Tommy Hilfiger smells delicious and there’s also a soft, perfumed butter that is available in an attractive pink tube. It hydrates while adding a subtle gold sparkle. Price `2,180

>> Halle Berry paints a pretty picture in this black waistcoat. The fit is perfect and it helps in toning down the bling element of her top

5. fOR a DaY OUt Waistcoats aren’t just for special occasions; you can incorporate them in your daily-wear wardrobe as well. Opt for lightweight fabrics and versatile colours and prints, so that they match the multiple items you already own. An Aztec print waistcoat with a solid colour dress or shirt is a great way to take the basics in your wardrobe and transform them.

Secret Santa G

ifting a co-worker is not easy, especially if you want your gift to stand out. Diaries, pens and organisers are passé and if you want your gift to be appreciated, you’re going to have to put on your thinking cap and come up with something quirky. At the same time, how much is too much? Tricky, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be, if you continue reading this article.

Troubled over what to gift your co-workers? While you don’t want to give anything too personal, anything too impersonal will make you look like the Grinch. Dev Goswami gives you some good options

gifting options

wise cracks

We bring you a few options that would make for good presents:

Mini desk art, such as this one on a minieasel, make for cute, fun gifts. We’re sure your colleagues will love them. where www.gabambo.com price `1,000

the safe bet: mugs A coffee mug is perhaps the best gift to give a co-worker you don’t know too well. But, how do you make this somewhat common present stand out? Websites such as www.indiacircus.com and www.houseproud.in have mugs which cost as little as `300, yet have unique and fun designs. You can also get personalised mugs from www.printvenue.com.

electronic accessories With everyone sporting tablets and smart phones, electronic accessories are also a great gifting option. You’ll find a plethora of covers online, as well as at electronic stores in the city. If you don’t know the person well, a safe option is to find out what sports team or music band they like the best and get a themed cover. We also love the range of tablet sleeves on www.printvenue.com. Priced at around `1,000 per piece, they have cool designs that can even be personalised with a picture.

items for the desk Another foolproof option is to gift items that can be placed on their work desk. But, we aren’t talking about pen stands — while they can make for thoughtful gifts, there’s a lot more quirky stuff out there. www.gabambo.com has a collection of posters on a mini-easel. These posters have funny or motivational quotes and make for great gifts. Apart from that, quirky pen drives, pens shaped like feathers, hipflasks with funny quotes, bookmarks and organiser sets are some other options that you can look for. We recommend you also check out the websites www.hitplay.in and www.whysoserious.co.in.

you can’t go wrong with food! You can never go wrong with food, especially when it’s in the form of chocolates or dessert. From The Cocoa Trees to Foodhall in Palladium, you’ll find a number of interesting food hampers that will make gifting easier. One of our favourites is Mad Over Donut’s range of Cakelings. Available in cute packaging of one, three or six, you can choose from a variety of flavours and at `65 for a Cakeling, they’re quite pocket-friendly too.

a sweet surprise

the final option — vouchers Don’t have much time to think of a gift? Or are you at an absolute loss as to what to gift your colleague? Well, for those times, vouchers can come in handy. Get vouchers from bookstores for the bibliophile, while a voucher from their favourite fashion brand will be a great choice for the shopaholic. Sure, they aren’t the best gifts, but something’s better than nothing, right? Combine them with a cute card and a box of chocolates and you should be good.

While you can’t go all out when flirting with a guy you like at a wedding, you can at least drop some calculated hints that will make your intentions clear. Priyanka Singh helps you out

It might sound a bit clichéd, but your eyes have the capability to work wonders when it comes to matters of romance. However, we are not suggesting the done-to-death technique of looking into his eyes. For all you know, you might not even get a chance to do so. We are talking about mastering a particular glance. Turn your head slightly down, peer up and smile with a half grin. The message you are sending to him says, ‘I am interested in you.’ But, you are also letting him know that you are not prepared to take the front, so it is his turn to nake a move.

I used to be painfully shy as a teenager. In my twenties, I made a big turn-around. I became a party animal! Everywhere I went I was (or thought I was) the life of the party.

Body language A lot has been said about how women who are interested play with their hair as they look in a man’s direction. Well, while this isn’t true all the time, most people will interpret it as exactly that. While you are talking to someone else, keep looking at him every once in a while — and accompany your looks with hair play. There’s a very high chance that he’ll get your drift and make a move in reciprocation if he’s interested too.

Follow it up by asking if she has eaten or not. However, don’t forget to look at him while talking to his mom and unleash your disarming smile, or else the entire exercise will be useless. If he reverts with an equally impressive smile, take this as a cue to step it up a notch and ask him if he’s eaten as well. If all goes well, you never know, this might just lead to an interesting conversation.

If it was a club, or a friend’s party, you could have just gone up to a guy you particularly liked and struck a conversation, but at a wedding, things become a little awkward because there

are families, relatives and most likely, he’s accompanied by his parents or partner (time to back off!). But, there are ways in which you can make your interest clear to a guy without going all out, since you’re at someone’s wedding. We tell you how you can put the message out there by dropping some subtle, but sure hints.

Taking a leaf out from the Always Hit on the Wingman: ...and 9 Other Secret Rules for Getting the Love Life You Want by Jake, go ahead and hit on the friend who’s hanging out with your eye candy. Strike a conversation with him instead of the man whose attention you are trying to grab. According to Jake, this trick always works as it stirs the competitive side of a man. Sensing that he is losing to his companion will urge him to at least grab your attention to prove himself, if not anyone else, that he’s also got the mojo. However, this will only happen if he finds you appealing too. In case it doesn’t work, politely conclude your meeting with the wingman. Most importantly, don’t lose heart. If you had had a few drinks, you might have laughed it off. However, you’re right… it’s not funny and it made you and your boyfriend uncomfortable. You need

to tell your sister what she did. If she is mortified, drop it. If she says it was no big deal, explain to her that while you understand she was in a good mood, there’s no need to put other people in a bad mood. As for the friend, put this down as a character assessment and remember it the next time all of you are out. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

It then rose further and turned into a range bound movement until 10.55 a.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6236 points level at 11.02 a.m. after the RBI left key rates unchanged. The market then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 106 points and closed above the psychologically important 6200 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were gainers, 3 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen in realty, capital goods, oil & gas and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 26.20%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a black body candle has formed a long white body candle on substantially higher volumes. This is positive. Further, the index has crossed above its 5 and 25 days moving averages in a single session. The index is now above its 5, 25 and 200 days moving averages. All these indicate a positive bias. However, the index is still below its 15 days moving average. Further, despite yesterday’s sharp rise the velocity parameters continue to remain negatively trended. Moreover, the 5 days moving average is below the 15 days moving average and is declining. All these indicate a negative bias. As such these are mixed signals. T

he Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan surprised the markets and experts yesterday, by leaving the key policy rates unchanged at the Mid-Quarter Review of Monetary Policy Statement 2013-14. The repo rate is unchanged at 7.75% and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4%. Repo is the rate at which the central bank lends to banks; CRR is the percentage of deposits banks have to necessarily keep with the central bank as cash. Terming it a close decision Governor Rajan clarified that they are waiting for more data as they expect the spike in vegetable prices to soften in the next reading. “The policy decision is a close one,” said Governor Rajan at the press conference announcing the policy decision. “Current inflation is too high. However, given the wide bands of uncertainty surrounding

the short term path of inflation from its high current levels, and given the weak state of the economy, the inadvisability of overly reactive policy action, as well as the long lags with which monetary policy works, there is merit in waiting for more data to reduce uncertainty, “he said. “Based on RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s remarks, it can be inferred that the RBI feels inflation concerns are not as high as economists feel and will be eventually brought down,” said Raghu Kumar, Cofounder, RKSV. However, many believe that the decision taken by the apex bank to keep the rates unchanged is risky at the juncture. As per the data released by the government, retail inflation in November increased to an all-time high of 11.24% from 10.17% in October. “Our base case assumption was for the RBI to move to 8% and then sight the drop in vegetable prices as a guidance to keep its rates on hold for some time,” said Arvind Chari, Head - Fixed Income & Alternatives, QASL. “Even though the Reserve Bank maintains status quo now, it can help guide market expectations through a clearer description of its policy reaction function: if the expected softening of food inflation does not materialize and translate into a significant reduction in headline inflation in the next round of data releases, or if inflation ex-

cluding food and fuel does not fall, the Reserve Bank will act, including on off-policy dates if warranted, so that inflation expectations stabilize and an environment conducive to sustainable growth takes hold. The Reserve Bank’s policy action on those dates will be appropriately calibrated, “explained Rajan. According to Dr. Arun Singh, Sr. Economist, Dun & Bradstreet India, the channels through which weakness in growth should have till now tamed the inflationary pressures have not been effectively functional. “Elevated levels of inflation still persist in the non-food and nonfuel categories. The persistence of weakness in growth for a considerable period along with non-abatement of inflationary pressures leading to an almost ‘stagflationary’ like situation continues to confound monetary policy decisions,” he said. Chari said that they do expect CPI headline to drop below 10% in December on lower vegetable prices and softer cereals as per explanation provided by the RBI. “But we are still unsure on the core inflation front. The fact that they have kept it open would mean that markets will not be able to completely factor in the full impact of Repo rate remaining at 7.75%. Also, the stress on core inflation falling as a factor for the next action would mean that there would be enough trepidation in the market

Asia Business Sentiment Falls In Q4 By Joyce Lee

B

usiness sentiment among Asia’s top companies dropped sharply in the fourth quarter, extending last quarter’s declines, with global economic uncertainty and rising costs weighing on the region’s firms, a Thomson Reuters/INSEAD survey showed, yesterday. The Thomson Reuters/INSEAD Asia Business Sentiment Index fell to 62 in the fourth quarter from 66 in the third quarter of 2013, the lowest reading since the third quarter of 2012. A reading above 50 indicates an overall positive outlook. Sentiment in Southeast Asia’s $1.5 trillion economy was undermined by political turbulence in Thailand and a typhoon in the Philippines, causing dismal readings of 40 and 58 respectively, which were the lowest for both countries since the poll was first compiled in 2009. Although China and India’s bullish scores of 75 and 82 respectively supported the index, export-driven north Asian economies such as South Korea as well as regional trading hub Singapore also showed weaker readings, underscoring still-anaemic global business conditions.

“The global economic recovery is still very fragile,” Zhang Shiyuan, an economist at Shanghai-based Southwest Securities Co said. “There is a fundamental problem that there’s still too much debt. It’s a time bomb that may be detonated if monetary and fiscal policies don’t coordinate well.” The survey showed that the auto sector was the most negative with a reading of 33, a sharp drop from 63 in the previous quarter, followed by the food and resources sectors with fourth-quarter scores of 50. The index surveyed more than 100 of the Asia-Pacific region’s top companies including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Fast Retailing and International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) in 11 economies, across sectors including property, financials and tech. The poll, was compiled between Dec. 2-13. Of the 128 companies that responded, two-thirds reported a neutral outlook while less than 30% were positive in their prospects. Broken down by sector, builders in Asia were the most bullish with a maximum reading of 100 for the second consecutive quarter, followed by pharmaceuticals and property sectors with readings of 75.

RBI plays wait and watch game expecting food inflation to ease in coming days for a sudden reaction by the RBI,” he said. Many like Simon Rubinsohn, Chief Economist, RICS, feels that the country’s reliance on foreign capital means it remains particularly exposed to the risks associated with the US Fed tapering of its bond purchase programme. “Which could both increase volatility in financial markets and have adverse consequences for both consumer and business sentiment,” he said. However, industry body ASSOCHAM President Rana Kapoor agrees with the RBI Governor that a pause on interest rates despite spike in inflation, for now, should not be taken as being a soft stance on price rise. “His commitment to see stable prices is very much reflected in cautionary words which suggest that should there be a need, the central bank would remain vigilant and take action”, said Kapoor. “However, there is a strong case for the banks to cut the lending rates in the wake of ample liquidity in the system. They are sitting on big cash which should be finding ways into productive investments. The bigger banks should take a lead in this regard now that the RBI has paused for the time being,” he said.

LOVIN’ IT UP

‘Emotional Closure’ with wife

I am a 30-year-old, good looking Indian man. I was married and have a child, but my wife has left me a year ago and does not want to maintain any relationship with me. I have not hurt her in any way but she is insistent on staying away from me. After the birth of our child, she has no interest in me physically. I need to love someone and be loved. I work hard enough to earn, but feel lonely at times when I am alone. Should I try another relationship with a woman who is quiet, understanding, emotional, and also understands my needs? IT is important to know the reasons why your wife has separated from you, in order to know whether reconciliation is possible or not. However, there will have to be a counsellor’s intervention so that the reasonable needs of both partners are taken into consideration before deciding. If the reasons given by her are valid and if her reasonable needs are not being satisfied by you in the relationship, and if you do not even admit it or do

EW DELHI: Senior Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, arrested in New York on charges of visa fraud, broke down many times after being subjected to ‘repeated’ handcuffing, stripping, cavity searches and swabbing while being jailed with common criminals and drug addicts. The 39-year-old deputy Consul General in New York, who was arrested and handcuffed in public while dropping her daughter to school on Thursday, in an email to her headquarters here said she stressed to arresting authorities that she had diplomatic immunity but was still subjected to repeated searches. “I must admit that I broke down many times as the indignities of repeated handcuffing, stripping and cavity searches, swabbing, in a hold-up with common criminals and drug addicts were all being imposed upon me despite my incessant assertions of immunity,” the email said, according to a source privy to the information. “I got the strength to regain com-

Virat Kohli runs as he celebrates his century during the first day of their cricket test match against South Africa at Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg.

KOHLI HOLDS FORT FOR INDIA

Ryan Harris in ‘drunken’ Twitter rant

SYDNEY: Australia's Ryan Harris has discovered that winning the Ashes does not guarantee access to Perth's casino, with the bowler launching a foul-mouthed tweet after he was reportedly refused entry for being drunk. The team's celebrations after clinching the series against England yesterday, hosted by former great Shane Warne, stretched long into the night with Harris, in particular, letting off steam. "A tip for all those heading to Perth! Avoid the crown or casino! Shithole, can't get in if you have had a drink #shitplace#dickheads," he tweeted, reportedly at 3:30 am.

Virat Kohli cracks century as India fight hard to reach 255/5

By Chetan Narula

J

OHANNESBURG: Virat Kohli gave ample display of his class by cracking a fluent 119 as a gritty India produced a decent batting show on the opening day to leave the first cricket Test against South Africa evenly poised. The 25-year-old Kohli, batting at the coveted number four position left vacant by retired batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, notched up his fifth Test century to steer the visitors to a comfortable 255 for five at close on a bouncy Wanderers track. Ajinkya Rahane (43 batting) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (17 batting) were at the crease on an eventful opening day which saw the beleaguered Indian batting line-up giving a good account of themselves despite their only warm-up game being abandoned due to a wet outfield. Kohli stole the thunder on the first day as he displayed wonderful counter-attacking ability with dazzling array of strokes all round the wicket after openers Shikhar Dhawan (13) and Murali Vijay (6) were dismissed cheaply by Dale Steyn (1/56) and Morne Morkel (1/27) within 15.1 overs. Kohli, India's premier batsman, hit 18 sweetly timed boundaries in his 181-ball knock with the standout shot being a pull off the fast and furious Steyn. He played some flowing drives, played the square cut well and was severe on leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who was repeatedly pulled towards the deep mid-wicket boundary. His shot selection was admirable as he was ready to leave a

Virat promised me that he would score a century: Coach Sharma

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli's childhood coach and mentor Rajkumar Sharma is proud of the fact that his ward has kept his promise of scoring a century in the first Test against South Africa, which he feels will lift the spirit of the team for the remainder of the series. "It is a wonderful knock and I can't express how proud I am that he has now scored Test centuries in both Australia and South Africa. He had promised me yesterday on the eve of the Test match that he would score a century in the first Test. I am happy that Virat has kept his promise," an ecstatic Sharma told PTI after his favourite student reached his fifth Test hundred. lot of deliveries but didn't forget to punish the loose balls. Kohli reached his fifth Test hundred when he played off-break bowler Jean-Paul Duminy's delivery towards mid-wicket for a couple before celebrating the milestone with a leap and punch of his fists in the air. As he took charge of taking on the Proteas attack, he was well complemented by Cheteshwar Pujara (25) during their 89-run third wicket stand before he was unfortunately run-out due to a horrible mix-up. Rahane, playing only his second Test, also showed good temperament during their fifth-wicket stand of 68 runs as the young Mumbai batsman grew in confidence with passage of time. Kohli was finally out giving a catch to Duminy at covers off Kallis' bowling. Each bowler of the South African pace quartet got a wicket each. After Kohli's dismissal, Dhoni walked in, and negated the second

new ball taken immediately when due by the Proteas, putting up 36 runs with Rahane for the unbroken sixth wicket stand taking India past the 250-run mark in the 85th over. Rahane hit seven fours in his 105ball knock with the best shot being a cover drive off Steyn when the latter was bowling with second new ball. Apart from Steyn and Morkel,Vernon Philander (1/45) and Jacques Kallis (1/37) got a wicket apiece with Imran Tahir (0/47 in 8 overs) and Duminy (0/30 in 5 overs) were disappointing. The spin duo gave away 77 runs in 13 overs between them. Kohli was given ample support in the final session of the day by Rahane, who didn't want to waste this chance. Kohli's 100 came off 140 balls with 16 hots to the fence. In good batting conditions, the two were watchful in the first hour after tea, not wanting to lose anymore wickets. There were a couple of played and missed chances, partic-

ularly against Morkel, who bowled his heart out with only a solitary wicket to show. After reaching his century, Kohli slowed down trying to play for time. Rahane though kept up the tempo and together they brought up their 50-run partnership in the 71st over. It might have the final drinks break of the day that caused a break in Kohli's concentration as he was out caught by Duminy, playing a loose drive off Kallis. He looked tired after a mammoth effort off 181 balls, walking off to cheers from the sparse crowd and indeed from the Indian dressing room. Earlier, India had started post-lunch on 70 for 2 with Kohli rebuilding the innings with Pujara. They brought up their 50-run partnership in the 30th over, looking comfortable whilst leaving the ball and attacking with great caution. Kohli scored at a quick clip, attacking Tahir out of all bowlers. It seemed like a specific plan of targeting him, as he negated Smith's bowling options as South Africa fell behind the over-rate. In Tahir's second over of the day, 39th of the innings, Kohli completed his half-century. He reached the mark off 76 balls with nine boundaries in all. Together with Pujara, Kohli helped India cross the 100-run mark in the 40th but few minutes after that he was responsible in calling the former for a non-existent run which lead to his unfortunate run-out. Brief Scores: India 255 for five in 90 overs [Virat Kohli 119, Ajinkya Rahane batting 43, MS Dhoni batting 17, Morne Morkel 1/27] vs South Africa.

The tweet has since been removed but newspapers took a screenshot and it was widely reproduced on Wednesday. Strike bowler Harris, who has played a key role in the Ashes series, won widespread sympathy on social media. "Poor old Ryan Harris. Apparently denied entry to the Crown in Perth for being too drunk last night. Australian Fun Police at their finest," said one tweet. Another said "Feel ya pain son." In contrast to Harris, Michael Clarke was apparently allowed in, with the Australian skipper tweeting his thanks to Warne, who hosted a party for the team at the Perth nightspot. "Can't thank @warne888 enough for having us last night. The boys and their partners had a night we will remember forever," Clarke tweeted. His wife Kyly added: "What a night of celebrations." All-rounder Shane Watson, who scored a century in the Perth Test, said he went to bed before the Harris incident. "Obviously things for a period of time might not have gone exactly right. But in the end we were just there to have a great time," he told reporters. "There was no intention other than making the most of winning the Ashes back. You do have to make the most of those good times because they're not always there. So it was extremely special last night."

Mumbai Tigers sweat it out to beat PIFA Colaba, make it to semis

M

UMBAI: Mumbai Tigers had a lucky escape as they beat PIFA Colaba 3-2 in their quarterfinal match of the Kalina MLA Cup at the Air India Colony ground, Santacruz on Tuesday. An intriguing match that was witnessed by a good crowd lived up to expectations as two second division I-League teams fought out tooth and nail for the entire 90 minutes. Underdogs PIFA surged into a shock lead in the eighth minute when Elvis Ozowaga scored through a neat finish silencing the crowd. Three minutes Mumbai Tigers goalkeeper Rehenesh TP mistimed his kick which went straight to Zeeshan Shaikh who lobbed over the onrushing keeper to double the lead. Tigers coach Bimal Ghosh was on his toes giving instructions to his wards to cut down the scoreline. They responded eight minutes later when Bikash Jairu received a great angular ball from mid-field and the youngster wasn’t waiting for second chance to bring the scoreline to 2-1. Tigers were now in a fine rhythm and the equaliser didn’t look far away. They got their much needed break in the 36th minute when mid-fielder Royston D’Souza ran through the PIFA defense and intelligently finished in the far corner to make it 2-2 at half-time. Some encouraging words by Ghosh in the half-time spurred the Tigers as they started dominating the play from the onset. Royston scored his second off the night with a brilliant solo goal, his unstoppable strike out of the box was too good for the keeper to handle. PIFA coach Nirvan Shah tried his best ringing in some changes but the Tigers defence stood them off. Tigers would now meet local Nigerians XI on Friday in the first semi-final of the Kalina Cup.

EW DELHI: Wrestling’s international governing body, FILA has announced a rejig in weight classes for its competitions, including those of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, a development which would lead to India’s medallists Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt moving up to a higher weight category. FILA added two classes to women’s freestyle and reduced one each from men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions, thus setting a 6-6-6 split among the three disciplines in Rio de Janeiro Games. This weight change will also be applicable in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. In its Technical Commission meeting, the world body also decided to change weight categories in other FILA events to affect a split of 8-8-8 among the three disciplines. The move came after FILA worked with the IOC to ensure wrestling remained on the Olympic programme. The sport was dropped from the list of Olympic programme in February, but was reinstated in September after FILA introduced changes to modernise the ancient sport. FILA said the changes in rule and competition format will come into effect from January 1 next year. For the Olympics, the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman will each lose a weight class be-

kilograms. Women’s freestyle was introduced for the 2004 Olympics and competed at 48, 55, 63 and 72 kilograms in London last summer. They will wrestle at 48, 53, 58, 63, 69 and 75 kilograms in the 2016 Games. That should help open up competition in an emerging sport that has been dominated by Japan. Reacting to the development, double Olympic medallist Sushil said that it would be difficult for him to change his weight category to 65kg from his current 66kg. “It would be difficult for me to compete in the 65kg. For me, it would be difficult to adjust to the new weight category. It’s not easy to lose even a kilogram keeping Olympics in mind. I have the option of moving to a higher category. Let’s see, I will discuss the new wight categories with my coaches and then announce the decision,” Sushil told PTI. Djokovic hires Becker as head coach

Neymar scores sixth goal in seven days ELGRADE: Novak Djokovic B has hired German tennis legend Boris Becker as his head as Barca advance coach ahead of the Australian Open in January, the Serbian ub /Copa again player announced on his website

ARCELONA (Spain): Neymar scored his sixth goal in seven days to cap Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Cartagena as it advanced in the Copa del Rey on a 7-1 aggregate score. With the round-of-32 matchup practically decided after Barcelona’s 4-1 victory in the first leg, the match lacked pace at the start and Cartagena’s Diego Segura almost snatched a goal for the third-division side when he curled a free kick off the upright in the 28th minute. But three minutes later Pedro Rodriguez scored his third goal of the series before Cristian Tello’s deflected shot sneaked inside the post in the 68th. Neymar rose over his marker to head home Andres Iniesta’s cross in the 88th and record his first goal in the competition. The Brazil striker scored a hat trick against Celtic last week and he netted twice against Villarreal over the weekend. Barcelona captain Carles Puyol played his first game at Camp Nou in nine months after being sidelined by injuries.

today. “I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Boris,” Djokovic said. “He is a true legend, someone who has great tennis knowledge and his experience will help me win new trophies from the grand slams and other tournaments,” the world number two said. Six-time Grand Slam champion, 46-year old Becker said he was “Proud Novak invited me to become his head coach. I will do my best to help him reach his goals, and I am sure we can achieve great things together”. Becker will join Djokovic’s coaches Marian Vajda, Miljan Amanovic and Gebhard PhilGritsch, the website said. Vajda, who has worked with Djokovic for almost eight years, welcomed Becker into the team, saying it was a “good solution” to choose the German player. “I realised that Novak needed a new head coach in order for him to continue improving certain parts of his game,” Vajda said. Becker will link up with Djokovic and his team for the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on

January 13. “Boris brings a new and fresh approach, and together with Vajda he will make a winning combination,” 26-year old Djokovic said. Djokovic said his goal for 2014 “Is to play my best tennis and to get in shape for the Grand Slams and Masters. hese tournaments have the most weight in our sport, and I want to prove my worth at them. The team is now strengthened and we hope for maximum results,” he said. Djokovic won the Australian Open in January for the third year in a row, but he was defeated in the semi-finals of the French

Open by Rafael Nadal and lost in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open to Andy Murray and Nadal. The Spaniard also took back the world number one spot from the Serb before Djokovic produced a superb finish to the year winning the World Tour Championship in London. Becker won 64 ATP titles in his career, including six Grand Slam singles titles. The move to hire a tennis legend like Becker mirrors Murray’s successful linkup with Ivan Lendl, which resulted in the Scot winning the 2012 US Open and this year’s Wimbledon.

Modi to contest RCA elections

JAIPUR: Former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi today received a shot in the arm after a Supreme Court appointed observer cleared his nomination to contest for the post of President in the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections here tomorrow. Despite being banned for life by the Cricket Board, Modi had defiantly filed his nomination for the elections on Dec 16 which prompted a livid BCCI to threaten suspension of RCA for letting him back. Retired justice Narendra Mohan Kasliwal, the judge appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the RCA elections as a principal observer, today accepted Modi’s candidature for the top post, rejecting the arguments put forth by his rival, Rampal Sharma’s lawyer.

EW DELHI: India’s first World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev will be conferred the Col C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award for the year 2013 at the annual BCCI awards function, the Board announced today. The award’s committee comprising BCCI President N Srinivasan, Sanjay Patel (Hony. Secretary) and Ayaz Memon (Senior Journalist) met in Chennai today to nominate a winner and unanimously

zeroed in on the legendary allrounder’s name. “Mr. Kapil Dev Nikhanj will receive the Col C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, which comprises a trophy, citation and a cheque for Rs 25 lakhs, at the BCCI Awards Ceremony for the year 201213, the details of which will be announced soon,” the Indian cricket board’s secretary Sanjay Patel said in a release today. One of the greatest all-rounders of all-time, Dev played 131 Tests for India taking 434 wickets, record at one time. He was the first player to complete 5,000 runs and 400 wickets in Tests. He played 225 ODIs, in which he took 253 wickets and scored 3,783 runs. His most memorable contribution to Indian cricket was the victory in the 1983 World Cup. As captain, Dev led from the front, with bat, ball and in the field. Dev, who had joined the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) back in 2007, was banned by the BCCI for being a part of unsanctioned league. But last year Dev and the Indian cricket board buried the hatchet after the former cricketer resigned from the ICL. The Board welcomed him back with immediate effect dis-

bursing his one-time benefit payment of Rs 1.5 crore. The Col. C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, named after India’s first Test captain, is given to individuals whose contribution to Indian cricket, on and off the field, is unparallel.

‘Pulverised’ England must not make panic changes: press L

ONDON: Serious questions need to be asked about the England cricket team following their demoralising Ashes defeat, but administrators should resist a knee-jerk clear-out, the country’s newspapers said today. The urn slipped from England’s grasp for the first time in over four years yesterday with a 150-run defeat at Perth, putting Australia three up with two to play and Wednesday’s headlines pulled no punches. “England’s rocks reduced to rubble”, said the Times, while the Sun splashed “We’re tr-Ash” across its sports pages. There have been calls to dump some underperforming senior players, including Kevin Pietersen and wicketkeeper Matt Prior, but Fleet Street argued that England must hold its nerve when rebuilding for the home return series in 2015. “The idea that there is a rival XI just waiting to make the step up to the intensity of Ashes cricket is as misguided as the call for the kids that follows every World Cup failure in football,” said the Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel. “Quite often, at international level, your best team is probably the XI that are already in the field,” he added. “Those players just have to find a way of proving that again, as Australia did this winter.”

The Guardian’s Mike Selvey said England had 14 Tests “to assemble and give experience to a team that can compete with Australia.” “This does not, or should not, involve a whole root-and-branch sack-them-all approach,” he argued. “The Australians know as much as anyone that England possesses quality cricketers.” He backed under-fire captain Alastair Cook and coach Andy Flower as the men to lead the rebuilding process, but called for a change of strategy. “There is certainly a case for bringing about a change in the culture of the side, where micro-management has been taken to excessive degrees,” he said. “A greater emphasis on players taking full responsibility for their own games will also be high on an agenda.” The Telegraph’s Derek Pringle said an inquiry may be needed to assess why the team was “found badly wanting”. “One reason England have struggled to raise their spirit is that back-to-back Ashes series are seriously demanding of mind and body,” he suggested. “When England needed to raise their game, several players, such as (Jimmy) Anderson, Matt Prior and (Graeme) Swann, looked unable to do so.”
