fter 15 students from Dr. Ambedkar College of Commerce and Economics, Wadala, filed a complaint against the institution for charging them extra fees, the college has threatened to expel them. These students have also filed a complaint with the Students’ Grievance Committee of the MU. In November 2013, students had registered a complaint against the college in the Social
Justice and Students’ Welfare Department stating that the institution has been charging students belonging to various reserved categories fees of Rs. 4,000 instead of the subsidised fee of Rs. 120 that they have to pay as per the rules. After the complaint was filed, the college sent the students a letter from the principal stating that they need to give a clarification for their complaint. It added that since the students have spoiled the name of the college by complaining, they will be expelled

That is why we approached the Social Justice and Students’ Welfare Department and filed a complaint. Now the college has issued us a notice stating that we will be expelled for complaining. Don’t students have the right to complain against institutions that are being unfair?”
Dr. Siddharth Kamble, Principal, Dr. Ambedkar College of Commerce and Economics said, “These students have spoiled the name of the college. They have not been wronged. They owe us a clarification for the statement after which they will be expelled.” A member from the Students’ Grievance Committee, who did not wish to be named, said, “Students need not worry as the issue will be taken up in the students’ grievance meeting and a decision will be made”.

he Palm Beach Road of Navi Mumbai known – a 10 km stretch that connects Vashi and Belapur through Sanpada, Nerul, running parallel to the Mumbai Harbour – has witnessed a number of accidents in the past. In an attempt to reduce accidents on this road, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has also installed a traffic signal near Vazirani sports club in Nerul. An NMMC official said, “Frequent accidents are noticed at the junction near the sports club in sector 24, Nerul as there was no signal for monitoring the vehicles. The traffic department had given us a proposal to install a signal at the junction”.

The HMIS’ Navsanjeevani Yojana scheme covers 15 tribal districts of the state and has been able to reduce infant and child mortality considerably. to get connected to the HMIS grid by this December. The enormity of health infrastructure can be determined from the fact that it covers the entire state right to the last person standing. There is one Primary Health Centre (PHC) for 30,000 people in non-tribal areas, one PHC for 20,000 people in tribal areas, one Sub Centre for 5,000 people in non-tribal area, one Sub Centre for 3,000 people in tribal area and one Rural Hospital for every four to five PHCs. But that will not give you a clear picture. Consider this – there are 10,580 Sub Centres, 13 Mobile
2,096 health institutions, ranks top in the state. What makes the health infrastructure remarkable is the fact that it caters to districts which have the highest population density per square kilometre like Mumbai City – 20,038, Mumbai Suburban – 20,925 and Pune – 1,157. In terms of comparative sex ratios, crude birth rates, crude death rates and infant mortality rates – Maharashtra with a 925 ratio ranks ahead of Gujarat and below Madhya Pradesh. The maximum decline in terms of female and child sex ratio is in Beed (93 points) and the least de-
cline is in Gadchiroli (10 per cent). The districts of Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli and Chandrapur have shown a marginal increase with respect to female and child sex ratios in the state. When one looks at the district level data, the most notorious districts in terms of skewed sex ratios are Beed, Washim, Gadchiroli, Osmanabad, Latur, Akola among others. The state ranks third next to Kerala and Tamil Nadu in terms of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). At the national level, the worst states with skewed sex ratios are – Jammu and Kashmir (minus 82), Dadra & Nagar Haveli (minus 55) and Lakshadweep (minus 51). The same in Maharashtra is minus 30. On the other hand, despite having such a huge health infrastructure, there are vacancies in grade A, B, C and D cadre posts in the health system. While the health services in the state are headed by one Director of Health Services, down below him all the three posts of Additional Director of Health Services are lying vacant. Same is the case with Joint Director of Health Services and Deputy Director of Health Services. More crucial are the vacancies for District Health Officer, Civil Surgeon and Specialist cadres. If one is to go by the HMIS data, the state faces acute shortage of Medical Officers (77 per cent), Obstetrics & Gynecologists (79 per cent), ENT (70 per cent), Psychiatrist (76 per cent), Chest & TB specialists (97 per cent), Superintendent Mental Hospital (75 per cent), Dentist’s (100 per cent) and Chief Medical Officer TB Control (100 per cent). Recently, Minister for Public Health Suresh Shetty announced a massive recruitment drive to fill up most of these vacant posts. Through HMIS the state Health Department is able to keep a tab on implementation of schemes like Jeevandai Arogya Yojana, Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Yojana, Navsanjeevani Yojana and centrally sponsored schemes like na-
tional tuberculosis control programme, Malaria, Filaria, Leprosy, Blindness control programmes and other programmes. The HMIS also helps the state and centre to keep a tab on issues like procurement of medicines, machines, vehicles and other equipments. One of the success stories since the implementation of HMIS has been the effective implementation of the Navsanjeevani Yojana in tribal areas of the state. The scheme covers 15 tribal districts of the state and has been able to reduce infant and child mortality from 6,705 cases in 2007-08 to 463 in 2013-14. Another success has been in reducing Polio cases from two in 2007 to almost zero in 2013, barring one Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) related case detected in Beed this year. Another significant benefit of the HMIS has been that the state
The ambulance service of the NRHM. has been able to now effectively monitor and clamp down on illegal Sonography centres in the state. Out of the 432 cases related to the PCPNDT act, 118 have been decided, 52 doctors convicted in 48 cases and 38 doctors imprisoned in 34 cases and penalties imposed in 16 cases. Through the HMIS, the state and the centre have been able to track the health services provided to pregnant mothers and children under the Mother & Child Tracking System (MCTS). The system helps tracking delivery of health services like immunization, regular health check-ups, registration, medicines and other parameters
vital for the health of mother and child. Under the MCTS, pregnant mothers are given SMS alerts through bio-metric search. In a bid to improve the quality of human life in 125 backward blocks in 22 districts of the state, the government has launched the Human Development Programme (HDP) in 12 of these backward districts. The aim and objective of the HDP is to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and determination of high risk mothers. Another innovative health initiative that the government has been able to implement courtesy HMIS has been the Community Based Monitoring of Health Services (CBMHS) under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). The CBMHS was introduced to ensure that the services reach those for whom they are meant. It has also led to promotion of accountability and community led action in the field of health. Since the introduction of CBMHS the utilisation of infrastructure at the Sub Centre and PHC level has increased manifold with patients regularly approaching them for treatment. Under the Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) project a total of 937 ambulances will be provided across the state. The NRHM is providing 690 of them for rural Maharashtra, while an additional 247 ambulances have been sanctioned for municipal corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur. Another innovative scheme that is being implemented through HMIS is the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU). The scheme is designed to meet the medical needs of people – especially tribals – living in remote and inaccessible regions of the state. Besides, by dialing 104, a Toll Free number, people can contact Health Advice Call Centre and seek medical advice on minor ailments, technical support and other facilities.

Will go on hunger strike if the USA does not apologise to his daughter, Devyani Khobragade By Zuber Ansari

ormer Bombay Electricity and Supply Transport (BEST) Chairman and retired IAS officer Uttam Khobragade (62) on Thursday warned that he would go on an indefinite hunger strike if the US government does not apologize for its unforgivable behavior towards his daughter Devyani Khobragade, who was serving as deputy consul general for India in New York, when she was arrested and given harsh treatment. Khobragade further demanded that they should “drop the false case against her,” and leave it to the Indian government to do justice, as his daughter and her maid are both Indians. Devyani was handcuffed, subjected to a strip search and a cavity search, her DNA
swabs were taken and she was put in a cell meant for drug addicts. Terming the whole issue as a conspiracy against Devyani, Khobragade said the maid, Sangeeta Richards was the one who filled up the visa form and only her daughter’s computer was used. “In the form, we had to fill the employer’s salary and so we rightly wrote down my daughter’s salary. Sangeeta signed it and the terms clearly mention that the undersigned is deemed responsible. But Sangeeta is now claiming that we owe her that salary which is incorrect. The document in the FIR against my daughter is contradicting their claims itself. Also, two officers from US immigration department interviewed Sangeeta. At that time, why didn’t they check the legalities?” When asked why US government and the maid
Diplomat Devyani Khobragade's father, Uttam Khobragade, a former IAS officer, interacts with the media in the city on Thursday.
Sangeeta would conspire specifically against his daughter, he explained, “It’s a political case. We had hired Sangeeta in November last year. In June, she had a money issue and went missing and lived with a Pakistani lady Maggi. She took some money, phone and documents without informing us and so we filed a theft case. She then called and demanded a huge amount and further asked Devyani to help her secure US citizenship and said, ‘India vapis kaun jana chahta hai (who wants to go back to India). We decided not to help her and filed a criminal case in Delhi.’” In September, the Delhi High Court passed an order asking Sangeeta not to pursue the case in any foreign court and issued a non-bailable warrant in December against Sangeeta. “This irked the US government which tried to help Sangeeta and when we asked them to keep away, they arrested my daughter,” said Khobragade. Sangeeta is using her clout through her father-in-law and mother-in-law who work as driver and nanny for people in the US embassy. He said he was not aware of this till now. Mr. Khobragade plans to take help from Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. When informed that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed regret, Mr. Khobragade said it was not enough.

Rally for clean roads led by Congress MP Priya Dutt ends up with more trash being littered all over the venue by her supporters
Instead of disposing off the empty plastic glasses properly, they just dumped them wherever they could, near trees, in front of apartment buildings, drainage gutters, and on the roads. An hour later, at around 1pm, Dutt came out and briefed party workers and media persons. The police personnel who were deployed for bandobast too left along with crowds, leaving behind hundreds of empty plastic glasses all over the place. One of the residents, on condition of anonymity, said, “How did these people even think of taking out a rally for cleanliness? Now this waste will remain here till the next day. We are finding it difficult to walk around the plastic glasses everywhere.”

day after the Lokpal Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, two bailiffs of the Sessions Court in Vasai landed up in the custody of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (Thane-unit) after they were caught redhanded while accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 from a 74year-old litigant. Valentine Pasco Munees (74), a resident of Papdi village, owns a piece of land in Vasai, which was entangled in a judicial case. After an extended battle, the court finally ruled in favour of Munees. However, bailiffs Narayan Ganpat Shinde (55) and Raju Keru Gandath (45) demanded Rs.10,000 from Munees for handing over the related documents to him and for the execution of the warrant of possession pursuant to the order passed by the court. Deciding not to pay the bribe, Munees approached the Thane unit of the ACB on

lmost two days after two minors were bashed up in Nirmal Nagar area, the police has registered a case against a BJP party worker for assaulting two minors in Shantilal compound at the BJP office and inside the police station. However, the police suspect that the arrest of these accused will create tension in the area ahead of Modi’s rally at BKC. They are likely to be arrested on Monday. BJP ward President Bablu Singh, the main accused in the case, had allegedly picked up Wasim Mohammad Shafi and Ajay Dhakle on Tuesday evening along with a few other party workers. They suspected that these had stolen some mobile phones two months ago. Victim Wasim alleged that Bablu and his associates took both of them to corporator Mahesh Parker’s office in Shantilal compound and thrashed them badly. The boys were then taken to Nirmal Nagar police station. At the police station, ward president Singh allegedly pretended to be a police officer interrogated the two. Police finally register a case against BJP party workers in assault case, but arrests likely on Monday, thanks to Modi’s upcoming rally in BKC on Sunday did not register any case in this regard. Senior police inspector Ashok Borse of Nirmal Nagar police station said, “We have registered a case of assault against Singh and three others. We are investigating the matter and will arrest them soon”. Sources from the police station said, “Modi’s rally is scheduled on Sunday. Arresting BJP workers in Bandra can create tension in the area which will be tough to manage. Therefore they will be arrested on Monday after the rally. There is a lot of pressure on us right now”. Meanwhile, Wasim is recuperating at Bhabha Hospital.
All four accused have been booked under sections 324, 323 and 34 of the IPC, while more arrests are likely in this case, sources informed. BJP Corporator Mahesh Parker said, “I was not even present in Mumbai when the incident took place. I have a lady operator in my office and it is not possible for such a thing to happen there. These two minors were beaten up by the public and my workers took them to the police station. It is a game of Congress party workers. All the allegations against me are baseless. I won’t even think of doing such things”.

It can be executed through the courts and can be challenged in the high court under article 226 of the Constitution, only when totally arbitrary and unreasonable order is passed. In her speech, chief guest Swapna S.Joshi said that the Lok Adalat is a system of alternative dispute resolution which roughly means “People’s court.“ She recalled that out of over 71 lakh pending litigations in the country a sizable number of litigations

were resolved during the recent National Lok Adalat, adding that if the litigants prefer to settle the disputes amicably, the cases will not pile up. S B. Munde, in his speech, said that the PLA will play a key role in reducing the number of pending litigations since a decree is passed and no appeal is allowed. Besides, no lawyers are required in Lok Adalat. “I will work honestly to settle maximum litigations,’ he added. Ajay Gujarathi, Secretary, MDLSA, informed the audience about the efforts made by MDLSA in mediating between the litigants from time to time.
Captain James is back! Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ is a very big release although I feel that it could have come earlier. We got the results two weeks after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, so I am quite happy with that. Till yesterday we didn’t even know that Sunil would be here. Only today morning we heard that he is released. I couldn’t have asked for more. I just felt that whatever I ‘promised’ my son has been ‘fulfilled’. He will get to meet his father.â€? She further added, “It has been a very tough fight. I am satisfied with the efforts that the Indian government has put in. After we met the prime minister, things were actually fast-tracked for us; PMO put in its best efforts to get Sunil out; am grateful to them.â€? The sailor’s family had approached the authorities in our country and Togo to let Sunil travel to India for his son’s funeral. Ponder awhile… “Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on offices, a rottenness begins in his conduct.” — Thomas Jefferson
Congress offer to AAP to form coalition govt A
NNA HAZARE does not want his supporters to be interested in politics and power. His main agenda is to fight corruption. Anyone of his followers who goes into politics and make an effort to be part of the country’s ruling set-up is summarily discarded by him. Anna would have liked his ‘shishya’ Arvind Kejriwal to stay away from politics. Evidently Arvind had other ideas: He decided to go into politics. He started the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and as soon as an opportunity came his way, he seized it: He decided to participate in the Delhi assembly poll. He and his followers carried broomsticks, went from door to door and canvassed in a most unexpected way. He got the ‘aam aadmi’ involved in the election. And he succeeded: His party was able to get 28 seats. The ‘aam aadmi’s response was huge. The Congress was routed: It got only 8 seats. And the BJP got 30 seats. None of the parties had the required number to form the government. Immediately after the results were out, the AAP held a meeting: It was decided the party would not form a coalition government as the people who elected it would not like it to do so. Later, however, when the Congress offered to become a partner with the AAP without any conditions, it looked like Arvind Kejriwal was tempted to take the offer. He appears to have forgotten the decision of the party not to form a coalition government. He has asked people to send him SMS informing him about their view. It has become quite clear Arvind Kejriwal wants to rule Delhi. He does not want to throw the opportunity that has come his way. Anna Hazare is mad with him. He has denounced Arvind Kejriwal. He has stated that Arvind ‘misused’ his name and built the party. Kejriwal says Anna is ‘in my heart’ but he has only shown he has become a politician and seeking power.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2013
OTHING pleases me more these days than to read in a paper a ‘positive’ story that speaks of the goodness of man and the well-being of society that in turn, brings joy to the heart. The Sachin Tendulkar chapter is over. Life, it is said, begins at forty and some of the reporting in our papers wished Sachin well in the days to come that touched me deeply. The Hitavada excelled in such reporting and one of its editorials really brought tears to my eyes. What is a joy to know is that life can be beautiful and indeed is and to be told so. The stories running down every one across the whole range of the great and the mighty makes one sick. The media no doubt publishes them on the theory that ‘bad’ news is good news. I read that a 14-year boy, by name Prithvi Shaw has scored 546 runs in 330 deliveries – the highest score ever by a school boy in cricket history. Sachin, it seems, had gifted a bat to him some years ago. So we probably have a new Sachin in the making. The Telegraph (Nov 21) had a story that was headed ‘Shawstopper’, which was clever. Prithvi’s father, it is again nice to learn, is a small-time garments trader. The same paper has a story on the discovery of a bacterium that can slowly degrade polythene. Credit is given to a biologist Bhavanath Jha working in a laboratory in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar. Hindustan Times (Nov 21) reports that India is winning the battle against HIV/AIDS with infection going down by as much as 57 per cent. It also carries a report saying that Honda expects sales to treble in three years which only shows that our economy is going to get better and better.
only girl among the nation’s top 30 NSS volunteers. It is easy to cover stories of murder, rape, arson, blasphemy and allied subjects, but I skip them. The Asian Age (Nov 21) has a story which says by 2016 India will have the world’s largest Facebook population with a growth rate of 37.4 per cent. It also has a story about the Republican Party in the US pledging to strengthen Indo-US ties even while assuring the Indian-American community that its interests will be protected. And the same paper had another story that said that the Church of England’s ruling body has voted overwhelmingly for proposals that could see the ordinance of women bishops, in 2014. I feel upset when my leader – of any party – is run down by the media. Okay, Narendra Modi referred to Mohanlal Karamchand Gandhi and made a couple of other errors, but my feeling is that he is under tremendous pressure and under such circumstances that he needs to take time off. The best of us make mistakes. I wish that Modi takes a month off

There is another story that one can get info under RTI without having to reveal one’s identity. DNA (Nov 21) has a story that says that a Sikh taxi driver in Australia who returned some 110,000 Australian dollars in cash found on the rear seat of his cab to its owner, has received a Malbourne City Council Award for his honesty. Sure, these are not big stories, but then they are so heart-warming. DNA in the same issue has another story that said a college student, Sakshi Sharma, from a Kandivli college (Thakur College of Science and Technology) has been given the Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Award as ‘the best volunteer’. Sakshi is the

Even the wisest among us can – and do – make mistakes for which we regret and my sympathies go to them, whether they are from the BJP, Congress or any other party. My sympathies go particularly to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and many others. One does not have to subscribe to their political ideologies to be sympathetic to them when they are under stress and wish they would all take a sabbatical. I wish even more than that that the media

‘Vibrations of the soul are most powerful’ V
IBRATIONS as a rule have length as well as breadth; and they may last the least fraction of a moment or the greater part of the age of the universe. They make different forms, figures, and colours as they shoot forth, one vibration creating another; and thus myriads arise out of one. In this way there are circles beneath circles and circles above circles, all of which form the universe. Every vibration after its manifestation becomes merged again in its original source. The reach of vibrations is according to the fineness of the plane of their starting-point. To speak more plainly, the word uttered by the lips can only reach the ears of the hearer; but the thought proceeding from the mind reaches far, shooting from mind to mind. The vibrations of mind are much stronger than those of words. The earnest feelings of one heart can pierce the heart of another; they speak in the silence, spreading out into the sphere, so that the very atmosphere of a person’s presence proclaims his thoughts and emotions. The vibrations of the soul are the most powerful and far-reaching, they run like an electric current from soul to soul. All things and beings in the universe are connected with each other, visibly or invisibly, and through vibrations a communication is established between them on all the planes of existence; as an ordinary instance, if one person
coughs in an assembly, many others begin to do the same, and the same is the case with yawning. This also applies to laughter, excitement and depression. This shows that vibrations convey the conditions of one being to another; therefore the seer knows of the past, present and future, and perceives conditions on all planes of existence. Vibrations work through the chord of sympathy existing between man and his surroundings and reveal past, present and future conditions; this explains why the howling of dogs foretells death, and the neighing of horses
MATTER & SPIRIT the approach of danger. Not only animals show this but even the plants in times of sorrow begin to die, and the flowers to fade, while during times of happiness they grow and flourish. The reason why plants and animals can perceive the vibrations and know of coming events while man is ignorant of them, is because he has blinded himself with egotism. The influence of vibrations is left on the chair on which one sits, in the bed where one has slept, in the house where one lives, in the clothes one wears, in the food one eats, and even in the street where one walks. Every emotion arises from the intensity of
is more considerate, and understanding. A lovely story that I read also in DNA (Nov 21) is of a doctor who referred a patient to a diagnostic laboratory in Pune for a CT scan. For that referral, the lab sent him a cheque for Rs.1,200 which he promptly returned as he did not believe in ‘cut practices’. There are, thank God, doctors like that. He is Dr. H.S. Bawaskar. My sincerest salaams, doctor; may your tribe increase.
Professional philanthropist There is yet another story that has deeply touched my heart. It is a story published by the Mangalore edition of The Times of India (Nov 25). On the city outskirts there is a temple with historic origins. It is known as the Sri Sooryanarayana Temple of Hoysala origin with idols of Shri Chennanarayana Swamy, with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi for worship. The temple was originally built during 1018-1038 AD by rulers of the Vishnuvardhan dynasty. It was practically in ruins though devotees still visited it. It badly needed to be renovated. The Temple Renovation Committee drew up plans at an estimated cost of Rs.15 crore and devotees were ready to make their small contributions. But what surprised the committee most was when a Roman Catholic came forward with a donation of Rs.20 lakh! He happens to be citybased Ronald Colaco, who believes that philanthropy should have no religious bindings. One morning, Colaco, accompanied by Mangalore MLA J.R. Lobo and others, visited the temple and handed over the cheque for Rs. 20 lakh to the temple authorities. What more beautiful story can there be? Colaco is reported as saying: “There is no religious boundary for philanthropy. Society should change and a day must come when people are not identified by their caste and religion. I am happy to extend support for the renovation of a historically prominent temple. Colaco has worked for a long time in the Middle East and is now a Consultant to whose knowledge is acknowledged the construction of the swanky Frazer Town police station in Bangalore. Colaco, according to his friends, is almost a professional philanthropist who has quietly and without any publicity given donations without asking anything is return. This is a very rare individual indeed. We need more men like him to build India to all its greatness. the vibration, which when active in different emotions, the main cause of every emotion being simply activity. Every vibration while active raises the consciousness to the outermost surface, and the mist caused by this activity collects clouds which we call emotions. The clouds of emotion obscure the clear sight of the soul. Therefore passion is called blind. The excess of the activity of vibrations not only blinds, but weakens the will, and a weak will enfeebles the mind and body. It is the state of vibrations to which man is tuned that accounts for his soul’s note. The different degrees of these notes form a variety of pitch divided by the mystics into three distinct grades. First, the grade which produces power and intelligence, and may be pictured as a calm sea. Secondly, the grade of moderate activity which keeps all things in motion, and is a balance between power and weakness which may be pictured as the sea in motion. Thirdly, the grade of intense activity, which destroys everything and causes all weakness and blindness; it may be pictured as a stormy sea. In the activity of all things the pitch is recognized by the seer. Man’s atmosphere tells of the grade of activity of his vibrations. If vibratory activity is properly controlled, man may experience all life’s joy, and at the same time not be enslave by it. It is most difficult to control a runaway horse. But yet in the control abides the whole of what is called mastership. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2013
IT is indeed heartening to note that the Lokpal Bill which has been dragging on for decades is finally through both the houses of Parliament and will soon become law once the honourable President approves the same. The septuagenarian, Anna Hazare has reasons to celeebrate (‘LS passes Lokpal, Anna celebrates’, December 19) because he had pursued it tirelessly and at the end of it all, facilitated its smooth passage, by getting rid of his obsession for his baby, the ‘Jan Lokpal’ and settling wisely for the ‘Sarkari Lokpal’, realising that it would be wrong to impose his views on the Parliament legislation and that it would not matter if one or two aspects were left out. All the political parties except the Shiv Sena and the SP spoke in one voice in its support which was something unprecedented in the history of our Parliament at least in recent years and it augurs well for the progress of our country. One wishes that such a unified approach is adopted in other matters too.
Lokpal is finally through ment completely ignored them. The hard work and dedicated efforts of Kejriwal and his team deserves the highest accolades and one can see the game-changing effects starting with the quick passage of a stronger Lokpal as compared to the earlier bill without the drama of the earlier Lokpal discussion in Parliament. AAP’s winning in the future elections will also force other parties to put up clean candidates as well as clean up their funding sources. — Joseph Mendes, Mumbai

Earlier it was with Sharukh Khan then our exPresident Abdul Kalam, George Fernandes etc. It seems that our government on the whole is very weak and timid and the USA does not bother as they know that government will not retaliate much. The USA does not dare to do so with any other country as they know they will retaliate strongly. The USA who claims to be global champion of human rights, freedom and dignity is purely a hoax and very much hypocritical. They invaded a sovereign country Iraq where 60 lakh people are known to be killed. In the name of human rights, freedom and dignity USA has killed much more humans all over the world than terrorists all over the world have. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

and pass the bill to win over the people of India, for obvious reasons – the general elections are not very far off! — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivali
THE anti-corruption bill would now be enacted into a Law after the President’s approval as the bill sailed through both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha with ease with only the SP led by Mulayam Singh opposing the same. Anna Hazare’s crusade and efforts against corruption have finally borne fruits as a sense of urgency was initiated by the AAP’s brilliant performance in the Delhi polls where electoral stalwarts were routed with the anticorruption wave of Arvind Kejriwal who was Hazare’s protégé when Anna started the movement against corruption. However, corruption would not end overnight and people should not be overjoyed by the new law. Corruption rules the roost in our country in spite of the many laws to check it but those are twisted by politicians in power. Working culture and public perception should change to change the system of corruption. If people refuse to bribe and grease palms, corruption would end automatically and the Lokpal can become effective with the support of the people.
country. I strongly feel that for passing the Lokpal Bill the entire credit must go to Gandhian Anna Hazare and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who took serious initiative to ensure that the bill is passed without any hurdles. The urgent need of the hour is that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which created lots of hurdles in passing the Lokpal Bill in the past should not take credit for this as it had created a mess of the situation when the Lokpal Bill was introduced in 2011 and now they surrendered before the majority in the Parliament. Power corrupts THERE is institutionalised corruption at the highest levels in our country knowing well that there will be no punishment; which is the crux of the problem. ANNA’S TRIUMPH: The Lokpal Bill, which has long been fought for by Anna Hazare and his supporters, has finally passed through both houses of Parliament.
Dealing with America ALL sorts of retaliatory acts are being carried out against the USA for the outrage on a diplomat. But why only in New Delhi? Why not do it all over India? Forget the consulates – see the way police provide protection to foreign children crossing the road opposite the Bhulabhai Desai US Consulate. Instead of all these childish reactions, why not just one action – strip search and handcuff the next US diplomat who enters India. That will send the message loud and clear. Maybe we need Modi as the PM to do this. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivali
ANNA Hazare is seen thanking the government for passing the Lokpal in whichever form as it is now and certainly seems to have compromised stating that the ‘left over issues’ could later be included in the process of ‘improvement’. Arvind Kejriwal has not minced words in expressing strong reservations on Lokpal Bill in the present form and the AAP feels that there is no amendment incorporated in the bill as required by Anna and the debate should start all over again from where it originally started during 2010. Kejriwal also has expressed his surprise over the nod in unison given by Anna to the Lokpal in its present form which excludes ‘citizens’ charter’ and also keeps ‘CBI under the administrative control of the government‘. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai
Save IMS Vikrant APROPOS ‘Prabhu’s Vikrant’ (ADC, Dec. 18), it is indeed an appreciable move by the city mayor Prabhu in not letting INS Vikrant be auctioned. An historic 16,000 tonne Air craft carrier acquired by the Indian Navy was languishing in the Mumbai harbor for long. It is pathetic to learn that the state or the Centre could not manage to fund an estimated Rs. 10 crore for the refurbishment of this iconic Indian Naval carrier. I presume that the concept of turning it into a naval museum with a budgeted amount of Rs.100 crore would prove to be beneficial to those who aspire to join the Indian Navy and the public at large to have such a floating facility for the first time in our country. However, Prabhu needs to entrust this specialised project to an experienced and qualified agency who would build up the museum in a manner that is world class. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

It is highly disturbing to find this vessel reduced to such a pathetic state. INS Vikrant is the only World War II era British built air craft carrier to be preserved as a museum. She played a major role in the 1971 Indo Pak war. The ship was an inspiration to our next generation and needs to be maintained as a war time memorial. INS Vikrant even after her decommissioning in 1997 has been a major source of attraction for enthusiasts from all over the country. Fresh AppeAl P
allate has reopened in the Famous Studio Lane in Mahalaxmi. The store, located right next to the restaurant Auriga, has a box-like appearance from the outside. Once you enter, you’ll find that the space is actually quite big and well laid out. It reminded me a bit of a warehouse with furniture strewn across the floor, but it was still orderly. This lets you walk around the store with ease and it won’t take you more than a few minutes to check out their entire collection, even though it’s pretty vast. Their sofa sets are classy with textured and solid finishes in prominence. The sets have been paired with teapots and coffee tables. I particularly liked the one with a wooden base and a marble top. But, it’s their collection of dining table and chairs which really stands out! One that caught my eye was the red-white set which had a contemporary design. Another one that made an impression was the tree bark

Boho-chic N estled in Khar’s residential area, the glow from the store’s signage beckons you from a distance. Sparsely accessorised, the interiors are intentionally rustic, perfectly complementing Priyadarshini’s aesthetic. A white-washed brick wall peeks through and the decidedly unfinished ceilings and walls add a quality of raw grunge to the store. Well-lit and minimally accessorised, the eye goes straight to the clothes at this store. Priyadarshini Rao plays it safe with this collection, sticking true to her style. The collection includes tunics, maxi dresses, palazzos, salwar-kurta sets, shirts and a few saris. There is a men’s section as well, which has basic short length kurtas and shirts. For the first time, Priyadarshini Rao has also introduced a capsule children’s
collection, with bohemian dresses for girls aged five to 12. Mostly, Rao focuses on cotton and silk as far as the tunics, palazzos and maxis are concerned. Panels of handloom print fabrics
Pallate has reopened in Mahalaxmi. The new store has a refreshing design and classy furniture to justify its prices. Dev Goswami tells you more out. The swing is something that you won’t be able to resist sitting on. Another such piece of furniture is the high chair with a textured finish that gives the impression of a number of corks stuck together. Other items at Pallate include vases, mirrors, unique lights and wall art. Most of the pieces have been designed by their in-house think tank that creates a signature line of products in collaboration with leading Indian as well as international designers. Overall, Pallate has an impressive and unique collection. As far as the prices are concerned, Pallate is definitely not for those are watching their budget. Expect to spend as little as `1,000 or as much as `10 lakh While the sofa, dining and bed here. But, rest assured that the sets all are really good with classy products you buy will be worth appeal, it is the smaller items your money and time. such as the aforementioned Where Famous Studio wooden stools, transparent Lane, Dr. E. Moses Road, plastic chairs and the long and Mahalaxmi (W) extremely comfortable leather conTacT 24956666 swing, that are worth checking textured set. The dining table and stools had an uneven cut, giving it a unique and quirky touch. I especially loved the stools which look like a portion of a tree trunk.
After the success of her line Mineral, Priyadarshini Rao launches her first flagship store in Mumbai. Shirley Mistry takes a look to see if the store impresses
make up a lot of the garments, and shades of mustard, rust, olive and indigo feature prominently. The use of sequins is minimal as Rao leans more towards embroidery and brocade and gota, which is also used sparingly. Another interesting rack was the >> Priyadarshini Rao’s flagship store (inset) has simple designs are simple that are effortlessly bohemian
one which displayed shirts for women in chiffon with prints often seen on handloom fabrics. Priced at `4,000, these shirts looked breezy, comfortable and effortlessly stylish. Another favourite was a pair of indigo
palazzos (`12,500) that looked extremely wearable. The kurta sets were rather average. The main problem I had with them, was the fact that there was too much going on. A different print on the shoulder, another on the hem, and the edge of the sleeves made it too cluttered for my liking. Only kurtas start at `6,000 and go up to `20,000 and the sets are upwards of `16,000. There were a few lehengas too, priced at an average of `25,000. The saris were spectacular though! They strike a perfect balance between modern and traditional. A bright yellow number with a traditional weave and border and pink trees embroidered on it was an absolute favourite. Called the Candy Tree Sari (`18,500), this one lived up to its name. The silhouettes are free flowing, far from constricting and relaxed — much like the pricing. A separate section houses short kurtas and shirts for men across a range of colours in linen and silk (`4,500) There are also a few shirts constructed in cotton handloom fabric. For the first time, Priyadarshini Rao is also retailing jewellery and leather bags through aka Bespoke for Priyadarshini Rao. These are plain, structured brown leather bags averaging at `8,500. If like me, you too prefer to steer far away from the bling, check out this store if your style leans more towards simple designs and a bohemian look. Imbiss’ new joint at Colaba takes the term meat lover to a new level and is definitely not for the squeamish. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you what makes it stand out
f you’re idea of a good meal includes seafood risotto or a vegetable curry, stay far, far away from Imbiss, which doesn’t serve a single vegetarian dish. This little gem is a meat lover’s paradise! While I was excited to visit a place where chicken wasn’t the only non-vegetarian item on the menu, since I found Imbiss’ Bandra sibling underwhelming, I had prepared myself to be disappointed here as well. I started my conversation with cheery owner Peter Mawiong over a delicious German Schneider beer (`500), accompanied by Slim Jims (`250) — fermented meat sausages that take 25 days to produce and are well worth the wait. We learned that it’s not just exotic meat (duck, sausages from across the world, emu, rabbit, oxtail… you name it) that they serve up but also exotic cuts of otherwise popular meat, which is why all their pork dishes are different from the run-off-the-mill fare found in the city. After a good conversation, we started our meal with a warm, comforting Hungarian Wurstchengoulash (`185). The name might be a mouthful, but just a spoonful of the sausage stew will make pronouncing it worthwhile. If you can’t decide what meat is your flavour of the day, the Spicy Beef, Bacon & Duck Cakes (`225) are a good joice. The little round cutlets are soft, tangy and delicious – served with a piquant mustard dip. The Romanian Pork Cordon Bleu sounds like a dreary twist on the chicken version, but is nothing like it. It looks like a toasted sandwich, but the mixture of cheese, ham and herbs was delicious. You can’t visit Imbiss and miss out on their Pork Spare Ribs (`450). The tender pork slides right off the bone and the sauce is divine.
A whole new world he sinful aroma of freshly baked bread wafting out of the Gaylord Bake Shop makes it difficult for passersby to walk on without stepping in. “When the place first opened in 1956, the Bake Shop didn’t exist,” says Noel D’Souza, general manager of Gaylord. “We had one counter selling Kwality ice-cream and another selling pastries. Over time, we decided to opt for a ‘Bake & Show,’ where the area, which is now the Bake Shop, was divided into two — one part was the baking area, where bread and cakes were baked, while the other was for customers to buy our products,” he adds. A far cry from the two counters, stands the revamped Gaylord Bake Shop which is stocked with a variety of baked goodies, from bread and cakes to cookies and even exotic sweet treats, such as Apple Strudel and Baklava. In fact, the Bake Shop and the external seating were refurbished just two months ago. “The onyx tabletops have been replaced with ones made of ivory coloured marble and the ceiling sports wooden beams and fans with an antique twist to them,” says D’Souza. The iconic chairs, however, have been retained, because of their customers’ fascination and fondness for them. The redone Bake Shop looks brighter and spacious. And with Christmas around the corner, the poinsettias nestled on top of the shelves and the decorations on the glass wall help spread the festive cheer. The easiest thing to spot on entering the Bake Shop is the Christmas hamper. Made in three different sizes, premium, medium and small, the hamper is stuffed with plum cake, jujubs, marzipan, milk cream, guava cheese, cookies, a chocolate Santa and other goodies. However, the plum cake is the star of the festive season and according to D’Souza, they sell between 2,000 and 3,000 slabs during this period. “We mix the batter six months in advance and let it mature, so that it can taste as rich as it should,” he says.
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2013
Gaylord ensures that the Christmas spirit is showcased through their regular cakes as well. “We dress up all our cakes during Christmas,” says D’Souza. “Even our popular Chocolate Truffle cake has been given a twist and for macaron and chocolate enthusiasts, we have now introduced macarons in various flavours, as well as Belgian chocolates. For those looking to feast on a typical Christmas cake, we have the Plum Cake with Marzipan. Most of the decoration on the cake is sourced from Modecor in Italy and is completely edible,” he adds. D’Souza is expecting the restaurant to be packed this Christmas and New Year, as it usually is every year. “We’ve already opened reservations for these days and we’re filling up pretty quickly,” he says. And what exactly can patrons expect on the menu through this season? “We have a special Christmas menu which is completely different from last year’s and the year before. We never repeat our dishes unless they’re Gaylord favourites,” he says. “This year, diners can look forward to Maraschino Prawns, Coulibiac of Salmon, Tuscan Mille Feuille and Christmas specials such as Roast Turkey, Sizzling Pork Chops, X’Mas Medley (made of turkey, chicken and lamb), Pomfret Rechaedo and the traditional X’Mas Plum Pudding.” With Gaylord’s expecting an overfull house, how will they manage to keep all their patrons happy on the New Year’s Eve? “We accept reservations and then co-ordinate with our diners on the day about their location. If they are very late, we assign their table to a walk-in customer but tell them that they need to finish before the specified time. As most people come a long way, they don’t mind finishing up early,” says D’Souza.
Whether you like tongue or not, you must try their Roast Tongue (`225). The oxtail is also delectable. We were full to bursting, but were told we couldn’t leave without trying the Chorizo Rice (`200) and we’re glad we didn’t! Topped with a duck egg, the spicy sausage was generously mixed with flavourful rice. For bread lovers, the Sliders (`200) are a good option — but they weren’t our favourite part of the meal. The Jagerschnitzel (`225) was also great, the mushroom sauce flawlessly prepared — but the crumb fried treat was too heavy for my liking. We thought nothing could top all this, but then out came the Eisbien (`300) — a German speciality. The pork knuckle was cooked to tender perfection and the accompaniments and sauce made for a heady treat. When you visit, which you should, remember to ask for the Imbiss Times. A black and white spreadsheet designed and compiled by Peter himself. It’s filled with witty quotes, tips, meat facts and quirky articles about why life without meat is incomplete. There’s too much to say about and taste at Imbiss so I’ll be heading back to scourge through more of their meaty menu and taste the emu. Even if you live in the suburbs, skip past Bandra and head over to their Colaba outlet. It’s worth the ride and the parking trouble — but be prepared to gain a dress size while you’re there. finding that consumers form these loyalties early, and take them wherever they go. The researchers write in their just released paper, “The Evolution of Brand Preferences: Evidence From Consumer Migration,” that the first brand to take root in a region often remains the dominant brand, explaining geographic differences, and preferences often are tied to advertising and prominence. Brand loyalty develops internally based on consumers’ histories, and that loyalty then is slow to fade. They added that, based on an analysis of Nielsen Homescan data and surveys of consumers’ lives that was part of the paper published in American Economic Review in 2012, “We show that our data also strongly reject the hypothesis that all that matters is where consumers lived in childhood: consumers who move after age 25 still eventually converge to the consumption patterns of their new state of residence.”

U
nited Nations has lowered India’s economic growth forecast for 2013 to 4.8% while warning that emerging markets should be prepared to deal with the impact of US Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing programme. India’s economy is forecast to grow at 4.8% in 2013, down 1.3% from its earlier projection, the UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects 2014 report said. Similarly, it has lowered the growth projection for 2014 to 5.3%, down 1.2% from earlier forecast. The UN sees India to grow by 5.7% in 2015. “In China, growth was expected to maintain a pace of about 7.5% over the next few years, while India’s economy was forecast to grow by more than 5%,” the UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects 2014 report said. Growth in South Asia remains lacklustre as a combination of internal and external factors hamper activity, particularly in the region’s
largest economies, such as India, it said. India’s growth in the first half of 2013-14 stood at 4.6%. To achieve 5% growth in this financial year, the economy has to expand by 5.4% in the second half. Shamshad Akhtar, UN’s Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said much of the world’s economic weakness stemmed from developed economies which continued to struggle, including the euro area and the US. Capital flows declined for many developing countries and associated volatility generated macroeconomic complications, she said, adding volatility of flows, particularly with regard to the US Fed Res’s tapering of the quantitative easing programme, had strong consequences. “The potential for substantial downside risks of the premature tapering of quantitative easing could impact global growth. Emerging markets should be prepared to deal with the impact of global outflows as quantitative eas-
ing was (being) tightened,” she said. The US Federal Reserve last night announced that it would reduce the monthly bond purchases to $75 billion from the existing level of $85 billion from January. Meanwhile, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said India is better prepared to deal with the situation arising out of a cut in US bond purchases and that markets have already factored in the impact of such a move. He said this is a mild reduction and the US Fed has not announced any sequential reduction. “The government is of the view that the markets had already factored in the US Federal Reserve’s decisions and therefore is not likely to be surprised by these moderate changes,” he said in a statement. Further, the UN report said the global economy was expected to grow at a pace of 3% in 2014. Pingfan Hong, Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Unit, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said the world economy in 2013 was unable to meet even the most modest projections.
FTIL, MCX Shares Slump By A Business reporter

‘Implement Uniform Spectrum Usage Charge Before Auction’ By A Business Reporter
I
BUSINESS
n order to have a successful spectrum auction in January, the government should implement a flat spectrum usage charge as operators will be “discouraged” to buy airwaves if the levy continues at the current escalated regime, Assocham said yesterday. “We support the Trai’s recommendations and urge the government to announce the implementation of uniform SUC before the forthcoming auctions,” Assocham’s National Telecom Council Chairman TV Ramachandran told reporters here. The SUC, which is levied annually by government as percentage of revenue earned by telecom companies from telecom services, varies between 3 to 8% in case of mobile operators. Trai had suggested that
the annual SUC be set at a flat 3% of companies’ revenue for the spectrum they buy from auctions. “None of the spectrum reforms being introduced by the government like spectrum sharing, revised mergers and acquisitions will take off until there is a uniform SUC regime as the operators will be discouraged to purchase spectrum if the SUC continues at the current escalated regime,” he said. Ramachandran, who is also the Resident Director of regulatory affairs at Vodafone India, said if no decision was taken on SUC before the auction, it might affect the process. He said the concerns of the Department of Telecom (DoT) that uniform charges may cause a loss of Rs 2,500 crore to its exchequer over a period of 10 years are “incorrect”. “If the government believes that
three% SUC will result in a loss, it can set the uniform SUC at a rate that will give the government revenue neutrality,” he added. According to him, the last two auctions failed on account of high reserve price and “escalated SUC regime”. “167.50 MHz of spectrum in 1800MHz band remained unsold in November 2012 auctions. Even taking yesterday’s reserve prices, the loss to the Government exchequer on account of this unsold spectrum is Rs 1,744 crore per year ,” he added. He believes that additional rural rollout obligations should be imposed in place of a USO levy. “If additional rollout obligations are being prescribed, there is no rationale to continue with a USO levy. Already there are over Rs 28,221 crore (as on September 30, 2013) lying unutilised in the USO Fund,” he said.
BUSINESS BRIEFS MCX Calls Board Meeting To Discuss FTIL Stake Issue
Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has called a meeting of its board on December 26 to decide on FMC’s order to cut promoters stake from 26% to 2%. Forward Markets Commission (FMC) had ruled that Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL), the promoter and the largest shareholder, is not ‘fit and proper person’ to continue to be a shareholder of 2% or more in the bourse.

Expect More Global Chains In Multi-Brand Retail: Sharma
After Tesco’s application to open multi-brand retail stores in India in partnership with Tata’s Trent, other major global players are expected to follow suit, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said yesterday. “We do hope that the other majors in this sector will also come, looking at the potential of the Indian market. The fact that they are coming to a country of 1.25 billion, and a country which is the largest producer of food grains, fruits and vegetables...,” he told reporters here.

Can’t blame anyone for the spilt: Sussanne Roshan

S
ussanne, who recently separated from Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan, feels that no one should be blamed for their split. As the couple decided to part ways, there were rumours of Arjun Rampal’s involvement in the split following the alleged growing friendship between Sussanne and the model-actor. “You can’t blame anyone for this. It is sad to blame anyone. We are close knit of friends... It’s not right to blame anyone,” Sussanne who made her first appearance after the announcement of their separation, said at an event here. Earlier, Arjun too had rubbished reports of his involvement through a statement.
On December 13, Hrithik had said in a statement that it was Sussanne who has decided to separate from him and end their 17-year-old relationship. But the reason for the spilt was not mentioned. “There is no reason sometimes you have to take a call. It is just a situation,” Sussanne said. The couple got married in 2000 and have two children Hrehaan and Hridhaan. Even Hrithik’s filmmaker father Rakesh Roshan, who was present at another event, refused to talk about the matter. All he said was, “not now. It (statement from Hrithik) has been out and everyone has read it.”

M
usic maestro Naushad’s 94th birth anniversary will be observed on December 25. The Lucknow born Naushad’s orthodox family was against his growing passion for film music and he often got caned due to his love for music. But there was no stopping Naushad saab, the film buff, from pursuing his goal of becoming a music director. After working as an assistant to many music directors of the time Naushad hit big time as an independent musician with the successful Premnagar in 1940. But it was the music of Rattan in 1944 that etched Naushad’s name forever in the annals of Indian film music history. The film and the songs are remembered to this day. Naushad churned out hit after hit in the 1940s mainly in the films of A.R. Kardar- Shahjehan, Dard, Dillagi, Dulari, and Mehboob Khan – Anmol Ghadi’ (1946), Anoki Ada, Andaaz, et al. Naushad was among the early composers, who gave Lata Mangeshkar an opportunity to sing for Andaaz and Dulari which were instrumental in her rise to the top along with Mahal. But conceivably, Naushad`s supreme contribution was to base
film songs on Indian Classical Music. Many of his compositions were inspired by ragas and he even used distinguished classical artistes like Ustad Amir Khan and D.V. Pulaskar in Baiju Bawra (1952) and Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan in Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Baiju Bawra demonstrated Naushad`s grasp of classical music. Lata Mangeshkar once said the music Naushad saab composed for Baiju Bawra surprised her as it was entirely different from what he had done before. The purity of the ragas was maintained to the greatest possible extent. Naushad used to study every aspect of his tunes thoroughly. If he weren`t contented with even one word, he would ask the lyricist to pen the entire song again, to his satisfaction. It is important to mention here that most of Naushad’s songs were written by Shakeel and sung by Rafi. He would take a fortnight to compose a single song. Perfection was his motto. This condensed workload worked to his advantage as he went on to score the music for perennial classics - Mother India (1957), Mughale-Azam (1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Mere Mehboob (1963). In Mughal-e-Azam, Naushad’s musical score was outstanding.

One of the year’s worst films, that made sure Ram Gopal Varma stayed on skid row, was ‘Satya 2’. eworked out of a shelved documentary on illegal sexhorror films in the lower depths of Bollywood, ‘Miss Lovely’ by Ashim Ahluwalia, is a startling piece of cinema that explores a sordid tale of betrayal and doomed love. His first narrative feature, the film is an ode to renegade film making that flouts genre conventions to conjure up a world that very few of us have access to. The film follows Vicky and Sonu Duggal, played by Anil George and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, two brothers struggling to produce illegal sex-horror films in the mid 1980s. It explores the intense and mutually destructive relationship between the Duggal brothers and a struggling actress Pinky, played by Niharika Singh.
A scene from the movie ‘Miss Lovely’
“The story takes place in the dark, lower depths of the industry, so this is not the kind of space that we usually depict in our films. It is a very adult film that explores sexuality and violence and the things that people do to each other when they are struggling to make it in a city. I’m happy that the censor board didn’t ban it and, instead, eventually opted to grant it very few cuts”, said the director to a film agency. After winning the Best Film Award at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival and Best Feature Film Award at the 11th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the official selection of Un Certain Regard in Cannes Film Festival, ‘Miss Lovely’ is all set for a January 17 release.

aveena Tandon has done a few films since her marriage, and blames her personal commitments for taking precedence over professional ones. Raveena, 39, who has two children with husband Anil Thadani, and two adopted kids, says she is in no hurry to do films at this point of time. “For me, work has taken a backseat after marriage. I can’t do projects which will keep me away from my home for long. I am not in hurry to do more films andwill only do those whose schedules suit me,” Raveena told PTI. Post marriage Raveena appeared in films like ‘Pehchaan: The Face of Truth’, ‘Sandwich‘, ‘Bbuddah...Hoga Terra Baap’ and ‘Shobhana 7 Nights’ but these did not do well at the box-office. Talking about ‘Shobhana 7 Nights’, which was considered her comeback to Bollywood, Raveena said the film was too real to get commercial acceptance. “‘Shobhana 7 Nights’ was a festival film and didn’t get a good response at the box-office. However, it was appreciated at the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Chicago South Asian Film Festival,”she said. Raveena will be next seen in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’, an adaptation of Gyan Prakash’s book ‘Mumbai Fables’. The film narrates the story of how Mumbai became a metropolis against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz music. The actress plays a jazz singer in the film. “I will start shooting for the film soon. I don’t need any prior preparation for playing the char-
acter because my 25-year-old career made me a good performer. I heard the narration and found it phenomenal,” she said. Raveena has also ventured into jewellery designing with friend Rupa Bora.
BOLLY BRIEFS HC orders re-consideration of Ram-Leela’s certification
AFTER Sanjay Leela Bhansali had to change the title of his film ‘RamLeela’ to ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela’, the Bombay High Court now is unhappy with the film being certified as U/A. A division bench of Justice V.M Kanade and M.S Sonak has asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to re-consider its certification asking them to analyse if the film fits into the guidelines being provided. Moreover, the bench has even asked the CBFC to confirm if the film has violated any laws or fundamental rights of citizens. Recently, Sandeep Shukla, a Congress member filed a petition against the film for hurting religious sentiments, claiming that the title ‘Ramleela’ is misleading.
KJo: ‘I have lost the innocence to write a love story’
KARAN Johar, who is famous for making candyfloss romances, feels that he no longer has the innocence to write love stories. At the trailer launch of his upcoming production venture ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, the filmmaker said, “I actually find it very difficult to write a love story. I think I have lost that innocence which I had when I wrote ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’. I feel that the love scenes that I write have become very synthetic and artificial. So whenever I read an organic and honest love story, it always moves me to make it.” When asked what made him invest in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, KJo said, “When I read the ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ script, I was completely bowled over by its quirkiness and yet the moving quality that the screenplay had.” Directed by Vinil Mathew, HTP stars Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles.
‘Kareena Kapoor is very much a part of Shuddhi’
IT was recently reported that filmmaker Karan Johar is planning to replace Kareena Kapoor Khan, with Deepika padukone in his upcoming film ‘Shuddhi’. However, the filmmaker has rubbished reports. KJo took to Twitter to quash the rumours, writing, “Kareena Kapoor is very much a part of SHUDHI... which stars Hrithik Roshan.... directed by Karan Malhotra... the film will commence next year.” The film will be directed by Karan Malhotra of ‘Agneepath’ and it is slated to release in 2015.

OHANNESBURG: India’s pace bowlers staged a dramatic turnaround with a devastating exhibition of swing bowling as South Africa suffered a stunning collapse to leave the first cricket Test more or less on an even keel here today. The Indians lost five wickets for just 25 runs to be bundled out for 280 in their first innings but clawed back brilliantly to leave the hosts at 213 for six at close in an action-packed second day.
for his team by evicting J P Duminy (2) and A B De Villers (13) in the same over to bring the Indians back into the game. From 130 for one, the Proteas were suddenly struggling at 146 for six, losing five wickets in the span of 16 runs in the eventful last session. The Proteas, however, recovered some lost ground with Faf du Plessis and Vernon Philander stitching 67 runs for the unbroken seventh-wicket stand as Indian bowlers went wicketless for the last 21.3 overs.

IN BRIEF Ton-up Ramdin, Chanderpaul rescue West Indies
HAMILTON: A gutsy 200-run partnership between Denesh Ramdin and Shivnarine Chanderpaul rescued the West Indies from a perilous position today as the tourists battled to 289 for six on the first day of the third Test against New Zealand. Ramdin was dismissed just before the close for 107 to end a sixth-wicket stand that lifted the score to respectability after another Calypso collapse had seen the team slump to 86-5 soon after lunch. Chanderpaul was not out 94 at the close, with Darren Sammy yet to score as the West Indies fight to win the Test in a bid to level the three-match series. The tourists' cause was helped by a wicket that offered the bowlers little in the morning before becoming totally unresponsive midway through the day, allowing the batsmen more time to place the ball, and the run rate lifted noticeably.
AIFF GBM to amend constitution in line with Sports Code
WAR CRY: India's bowler Ishant Sharma, yells after dismissing South Africa's batsman Jacques Kallis for a duck. (Right) Zaheer Khana and Virat Kohli are ecstatic after having trapped rival skipper Graeme Smith leg before wicket. The hosts were cruising along comfortably at 130 for one before the Indian pacers wreaked havoc to completely change the complexion of the game on a Wanderers track which gave assistance to the quick bowlers. The lanky Ishant Sharma (3/64)triggered the shocking batting collapse by dismissing Hashim Amla (36) and Jaques Kallis (0) off consecutive deliveries before Zaheer Khan got rid of captain Graeme Smith (68) — all three wickets falling without a single run being added. Mohammed Shami then struck
Philander and du Plessis were batting on 48 and 17 respectively at stumps with South Africa still trailing by 67 runs. The Indians were unlucky not to have the wicket of du Plessis as he was dropped on 17 by Rohit Sharma off Shami at the fag end of the day. Brief scores: India 280 all out in 103 overs (Virat Kohli 119, Ajinkya Rahane 47, Vernon Philander 4/61, Morne Morkel 3/34). South Africa 213 for six in 66 overs (Graeme Smith 68, Vernon Philander batting 48; Ishant Sharma 3/64, Mohammed Shami 2/48).
Kohli reminded me of Sachin: Donald J
OHANNESBURG: South African bowling coach and pace legend Allan Donald said Virat Kohli's "responsible" century in the ongoing opening Test reminded him of how the now-retired Sachin Tendulkar counter-attacked the Proteas during a Test match back in 1996. "The one word that comes to my mind is responsibility," he said, talking about India's new No 4. "He (Kohli) showed great discipline and responsibility. It reminded me of Sachin Tendulkar when they came here in 1996. I was the first one to say back in 1996 that India didn't have much bottle. One person jumped out and played for the situation, played for his team, and that was Tendulkar. That's what came to my mind when I saw Kohli batting," Donald added yesterday after the opening day's play in the ongoing first Test here. Donald said Kohli's ability to
punish the loose balls when required was admirable. "The way Kohli left the ball and when we were slightly off the line he punished the ball. He paced his innings very, very well. He put up his hand today and showed real fight and he was tight and didn't give much away until the end." The coach did say that he wasn't very happy with the performance of his bowlers although he claimed that South Africa is very much in control. "At the same time, we were slightly wide and short, probably the widest I have seen outside the off-stump, because the ball was swinging. But the game never really drifted away from us. They are five down, and I will take it," he added. Donald did agree that Indian batsmen showed a lot of patience early in their innings. "It's a mixture of things, having India in trouble early on. Then, it became
sloppy in patches as the day went on. India showed a lot of patience, and left the ball really well today. They also played Imran Tahir very well. They have learnt from past matches here, and also we needed to find the right areas with the ball. We could have done it better and it was a tough Test match cricket today," he said. Kohli had earlier outlined that India will be looking to get 400 runs on the board, and if not they will be really pleased with 350-360 as well. Either way, if that happens, it will put a lot of pressure on the hosts, who have to bat last on this pitch. "I thought we stuck to our guns really well, and tomorrow we have to come and make a big play. We need to keep our eyes on the pitch, there are a few cracks. The second new ball has come at the right time, and tomorrow we have to come swinging, and there’s no doubt about it," Donald signed off.
NEW DELHI: All India Football Federation will amend its constitution to bring the age and tenure rule in line with the Sports Code in a Special General Body Meeting here today. The AIFF had followed the age and tenure rule as per the Sports Code of the government during its elections in 2012, though it has not made a formal amendment to its constitution. The SGM will amend the constitution tomorrow as the Sports Ministry has set the December 31 deadline for the National Sports Federations to bring the age and tenure rule in line with the Code. "We have been following the age and tenure rule of the Sports Code. But now we have to do it by putting it down in the constitution itself. We are doing that in the SGM tomorrow," a top AIFF official said.
Saina slips to world number eight
NEW DELHI: The failure to reach the semifinals of BWF Superseries Finals took a toll on her ranking as Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal slipped two places down the rungs to settle for the eight position in the latest World badminton ranking. The 23-year-old Indian had reached the semifinals in the last edition of Superseries Finals but this year, she could win just one match in her group stage and failed to enter the knockout stage at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Olympic bronze medallist now has 60830 points in her kitty and if she goes on to skip the Korea Open early next year, it will further drop her down the ranking ladder. Saina endured a tough season as she could not win a single title. The girl from Hyderabad is currently recovering from fever and chest congestion and had pulled out of the ongoing Senior Nationals at the Siri Fort Stadium.
Ken Schofield backs England under-fire coach Flower
SYDNEY: A key architect of the revival of English cricket today backed under-fire coach Andy Flower after the team meekly surrendered the Ashes to Australia. Ken Schofield, who authored a report on the way forward for England after their 5-0 Ashes whitewash in 2006-07, called for Flower to remain in the job after the current series ends. Flower's coaching future is unclear after his first Ashes defeat. There is speculation he may not continue but Schofield said he was a strong supporter. "I would like to think the fact these results have gone so wrong would want him to have another go and not leave on a negative. Only he would know," Schofield told Fairfax Media.

UMBAI: Ronnie Daruwalla shocked former world No. 7 Nalin Patel to storm into the knock out pre-quarter-finals, in the SPGPark Club Open Billiards Handicap Tournament on Thursday. With Hitesh Kotwani of CCI topping Group C, Daruwalla’s win was crucial in his concluding round robin tie against Patel, who later lost to Kotwani and crashed out. Patel, playing with a handicap of 600, hit a brilliant break of 147 against Kotwani in a desperate bid to stay in the competition but the effort was not enough. World bronze medallist Ashok Shandilya and veteran Subhash Agrawal, both of Shivaji Park Gymkhana, also entered the prequarter-finals. Shandilya topped Group A with a win over Chandu Kansodaria of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation (MCF), Borivali. Kansodaria qualified following a crucial win over former great Prakash Rajani of Khar Gymkhana. UMBAI: Two-time winner of the Olympic gold and an integral part of the US basketball team, Swintayla Cash who is in India as part of the NBA initiative to promote the game said that it was important that a first step is taken and the game is introduced all over India but said that the key was in its execution rather than its vision of promoting the sport.
Basketball is a sport where you don’t need a lot of space to play. When I was a kid, we didn’t have much money. So my friends and me cut out the bottom of a crate and put it up on a wall and we had a basketball. So we played like that. — Swin Cash
The Chicago Sky hoopster said it was difficult to replicate the pattern of US basketball in India as it was being played since a long time, but added it was important for the system to introduce the kids to the game so that it can spread through their respective neighbourhoods. “Basketball is a sport where you don’t need a lot of space to play. When I was a kid, we didn’t have much money. So my friends and me cut out the bottom of a crate and put it up on a wall and we had a basketball. So we played like that. next NBA or the WNBA player going to come in and that is not the idea of this initiative. It is to get the youngster become active and getting to get them lead a healthier lifestyle.” Cash along with her fellow hoopsters of the WNBA said her reason to be part of this tour was to give something back to the game. “As a professional athlete, I believe that with visibility comes responsibility and that means you need to give back. It is a free program and we are here to inspire the kids and hopefully they will fall in love with basketball. It will extensively grow in the next two-three years,” said Cash who is a recipient of a Doctorate in Public Service in the United States. Growing during the years when almost everyone idolized players like Michael Jordon, Cash said that she never thought of idolizing anyone as she never wanted to follow someone else’s footsteps. “I never really tried to be someone else. I always wanted to be just me. That is probably the way my parents raised me. They taught me to be secure as to who I was as a person.” However, he run to success wasn’t easy and she learnt that early in her career when her first tryst in the WNBA proved to be a non-starter when her team Detroit Shock suffered 13 losses. She decided to pull up her socks in the second half of the season and brought out her best by leading her side to the title. “I always feel that without a test there is not testimony and in my college we never lost a single game. Then I went to Detroit Shock and lost 13 games. That was adversity. I could have just sat and felt bad about it or Swin Cash demonstrates her skills during a basketball clinic in the city on Thursday. worked on it. Air India safely lands in the Kalina MLA Cup semi-final M
UMBAI: Air India registered a comfortable 4-0 win over Kenkre FC to storm into the semifinal of the Kalina MLA Cup played at the Air India colony ground, Santacruz on Wednesday. Kenkre FC gave a good account of themselves in the first half and were at par with their opponents. But two late goals in first half injury time saw their morale being hurt badly as they failed to put up a good fight against a strong Air India side. The first goal came late in the first half, when left winger Alan Dias curled one from out of the box which whizzws past goalkeeper Jayanth Kumar giving him no chance. Kenkre had yet to recover from the first goal that they got another sucker punch when Air India’s Nigerian striker ND Opara pushed them further behind. The former Churchill Brothers striker brilliantly cut past a couple of defenders and curled low in the far corner.
Players of Kenkre FC and Air India vie for the ball in the MLA Cup tie. Kenkre FC coach Floyd Pinto made some changes in the second half to bring his side back into the match, they came near couple of times too but failed to breach the rival defence. Air India capitalised on Kenkre’s lack of finishing as they scored the third of the night through their talented

Hafeez stars in Pakistan’s hard-fought win
SHARJAH: Pakistan survived a late order scare from Sri Lanka to pull off an exciting 11-run win in the first one-day international here, to go 1-0 up in the five-matchs series. Pakistan's innings was built around a brilliant 122 from Mohammad Hafeez which saw them post an impressive total of 322-5 in their 50 overs but were made to work hard for their win, finally bowling Sri Lanka out in 49.4 overs last night. Besides Hafeez's 122, Sohaib Maqsood (73) and debutant opener Sharjeel Khan (61) were the main contributors on a flat pitch. One of three main contenders for the Ballon d’Or, the Frenchman calls the repolling curious
M
UNICH: French international Franck Ribery is displeased with FIFA for reopening the Ballon d’ Or voting but has insisted that he is not afraid. He is one of the three finalists for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or. The other two being Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Bayern winger admitted that the decision to reopen the voting is a curious one as it has never happened before. “This is the first time that it has happened. It is a shame and a disadvantage, but I am not afraid. I am calm,” Ribery told the German Sport Bild this week. “I have not spoken about Cristiano not even with my teammates about him. Why should I? I do not care who is going or not. “For me, it is an honour to be among the three elected and so it is normal that I will attend the gala,” said Ribery when asked about Cirstiano Ronaldo’s comments that he is still unsure if he will attend the Ballon d’Or gala. Ribery also talked about the role in which Pep Guardiola is using him at Bayern. “He gives me the freedom to do what I want, I can go down the left or down the right. Pep has told me, it is important to have the ball. “From this profile I do look like Messi and surely Pep wanted to sign me for Barca, but luckily for Bayern this transfer never happened.”
Blatter says vanishing spray to be used at World Cup M
OROCCO: Referees will use the recently-developed vanishing spray at the World Cup next year to stop defensive walls creeping forward at free kicks, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Thursday. Blatter said the spray, developed in Brazil and Argentina, had received a positive reception after being used at the Club World Cup in Morocco.“I think it’s a very good solution, some say it takes too much time and I was also quite sceptical at the beginning but... all the referees who have used the system were pleased with it,” Blatter told reporters said. When a free kick is awarded near the penalty area, the referee
paces the regulatory 9.15 metres between the ball and the nearest defender and then sprays a line on the pitch to mark the correct position of the wall. The line then disappears within a minute. It has been used for several years in Argentina and Brazil where it is generally accepted that it has reduced the amount of arguing over where the wall should stand and prevented encroachment. “The representative of Bayern Munich said that here they can take free kicks with the wall nine metres away, while at home it’s only five,” said Blatter. “It’s a novelty....we will start using it in the World Cup in Brazil last year.”
