hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has assured hailstorm affected farmers in the state that the government is committed to providing maximum relief to them and has also appealed them not to take any drastic steps. Against the backdrop of the unseasonal rains and severe hailstorm in many districts of the state that destroyed crops in 28 districts, Chavan took stock of the situation yesterday. It’s World Sparrow Day today (March 20) and there are a number of things every Mumbaikar should know and do, to save the sparrow, before it’s too late. The Bombay Natural History Society conducted a 6 month nationwide online survey (www.citizensparrow.in) to gauge the status of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) recently. Atul Sathe of BNHS, says, “Over a period of time there has been a decline in the number of sparrows in urban areas, especially in northern and southern India. The decline is not so sharp in Western India. Having said that, compared to the last ten years, it is much lesser.” The House Sparrow, which is the most common type of sparrow in India, has declined due to a number of reasons. The sparrow is always found closer to human settlements, but our new and modern architecture is what is depriving them of space required for nesting. Sparrows need cavities or

he new building of the BMCrun KEM Hospital in Parel has a major fault in its electric server room located on the first floor of the 13-storeyed building. The room has been suffering from a major water leakage problem for the last one year related to the drainage pipeline. The security staff here fear a short circuit considering the fire incident that took place in the old hospital building
on Saturday afternoon. A fire broke out in the old building of the hospital on Saturday which led to the haphazard and hurried shifting of 135 patients admitted there. The electric server room in the new building has more than 460 voltage of power which connects the four major operation theatres and the children's rooms. A modern Kamathipura chronicle
This evening at 5 pm, we shall join the city's eminences and other well-known people, like South Mumbai MP Milind Deora, Bhimrao Ambedkar, grandson of B.R. Ambedkar, designer Maheka Mirpuri, singer Pankaj Udas, Dr. Lahane of the J J Hospital, funny man Cyrus Brocha, poet Jafar Bhai and other prominent people at the Jehangir Art Gallery on the terrace, for the inauguration of a very special exhibition of photographs. Titled “11th Lane Kamathipura”, they are the work of press photographer Sudharak Olwe, and the exhibition will be open till March 26 from 11 am to 7 pm. We are particularly looking forward to the show, both because of the subject as well as because of the man who has shot the pictures. Sudharak Olwe is that rarity among photographers working for the press, a man who charts his own path and dreams his own dreams. Bringing to bear the enromous sensitivity of the true empath, he often picks ugly subjects, and imbues them with a shining beauty that can only come from the conviction that these are stories worth being told. The title of the exhibition itself should be enough to draw in the footfalls, for Kamathipura, first established in 1795 as a place for kamathis or construction labourers
working on the city's Causeways, descended over the next 50 years into Asia's third largest red light district. The name itself is guaranteed to draw in the pruriently curious, but here they are bound to be disappointed. Sure Sudharak, the chronicler of images featuring the dispossessed and the deprived, has photographed the area in its red-lighted glory. And he has shot prostitutes as well. He has been working in the district for more than a decade now. But through his exhibition Sudharak has tried to showcase the plight and the living conditions of the sex-workers. It was Dalit poet Namdeo Dhasal’s “Golpitha” poems that led him to Kamathipura. Sudharak was fascinated by the giant of a man working for the rights of a people the rest of the city despised. Kamathipura was the world that Namdeo grew up in. He called it “do number ki duniya”, the bottom of the world. It included pimps, sex workers, hijras, petty criminals, homeless urchins, beggars and thieves. He considered them “my people - these lumpen; I am one of them. My poetry is about life here.” Sudharak read his poetry. It was an assault. Every word was a slap in the face, a punch in the gut. Here are some lines from

Elsewhere, a beautiful girl looks into a future that she cannot see, and finally, a reminder that the moments of beauty they create for themselves is fleeting, that the actuality is filthy, grim and as uninviting as this mattress that serves as a room.

And a pig: its snout full of blood…. Never before had I seen a face so devoid of light As was yours; and of a thousand other females like you. Flashing out from so many countries, and so many cages; And bearing so many different names…. You make anguish scream inside me; and stream inside me; and appropriate me. Is that the scream of an ending; or is the end itself a scream beginning? However, what Sudharak saw wasn’t the Kamathipura of the early 1970s when Namdeo had written the Golpitha poems. This is a changed place. The cages have gone; work on social empowerment is underway; HIV has entered; globalization has taken its toll; the people have been uprooted; even the physical landscape has undergone change. Builders are venturing in, the economic topography is changing as well. The women Sudharak shoots are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends and neighbours. They have faces and eyes and hearts and minds. Yes, they can be vicious; they can lie and cheat, betray and be betrayed, beat and be beaten up...their vulnerability takes many forms.
For more than two decades, Sudharak has been photographing the history of social and economic inequality that is present in our daily lives in this city of wealth and power. His work has appeared in many leading newspapers and has been acknowledged internationally. He started with the Afternoon Despatch and Courier before he went on to find his niche He spent more than a decade recording the conservancy workers of the BMC going about their filthy work, vulnerable to every noxious gas that escapes our sewers as they clean them. His work is not pretty – it is unforgettable.

We can understand that the Kurla police must be in a mild panic at having to appear in the High Court in answer to lawyer Abha Singh's questioning the delay in lodging a missing persons complaint in the Esther Anuhya case. But it is obviously a very mild panic indeed, one that stems from the confidence that there will be no consequences to the callouness they are accused of. But to say they extended “full cooperation” to the distraught family and only did not file the complaint because the family did not insist is a bit thick and indicative precisely of the callousness and negligence of which they have been accused. Now if only the court throws their own book back at them!

T
here are around 35,079 buildings in the city; the BMC has already started an operation to find out the buildings which are in dilapidated condition, which need to be vacated and require major repairs. The Shankar Lok building which fell last Friday was not the first such incident in the city. T
he Bombay High Court yesterday rejected a petition filed by employees of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), a government body set up to provide affordable housing to the people of the state, seeking pension on superannuation. The bench, headed by Justice V M Kanade, rejected the plea of employees on the ground that there was no statutory legal right available to them to claim pensionary benefits. The employees had pleaded that MHADA had already passed a resolution deciding to grant pensionary benefits to workers who had joined after November 1, 2005. However, the state had not granted approval to this proposal. The employees also demanded pension on the ground that the state had adopted Civil Service Rules which provides for payment of monthly pension on superannuation. However, the bench held that mere adoption of Civil Service Rules was not sufficient to create a legal right to claim pension. "Any decision taken by
MHADA can come into force only if the State Government approves it. We are inclined to reject the plea for issuing direction to provide for pensionary benefits to the employees," said the bench. Advocate General Darius Khambata argued that it is not a legal right of the employees to get pension. Such an issue cannot be claimed as a matter of right. Whether to give pension or not is a matter of policy decision for the state. Moreover, if the state decided to give pension to MHADA employees, then it may have to give such benefit to the employees of other state government organisations or state corporations. In that case, the financial burden on the state exchequer would rise, the Advocate General said. A similar petition had been filed before the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court wherein the state had informed that the Chief Minister had rejected such a proposal (of MHADA deciding not to grant pension to workers). Thereafter, the HC asked the state cabinet to decide the issue which too turned down the proposal.

RSS moves court against Rahul Gandhi
T
he RSS yesterday filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi in a Maharashtra court over his remarks linking the saffron organisation to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The criminal complaint was filed by Rajesh Kunte, Secretary of RSS unit at Bhiwandi, a powerloom town near Thane. Addressing a rally at Sonale in Bhiwandi on March 6, Rahul had said, "RSS people killed Gandhiji." In his complaint to the court, Kunte said the remarks were defamatory and sought action against the Congress leader. BJP has already moved the Election Commission against the Congress vice president. "I registered a criminal complaint against Rahul Gandhi with the First Class Magistrate Court at Bhiwandi. Through his speech, he has harmed the reputation of our organisation. The remarks were made with an ulterior motive," Kunte told PTI. "His allegation, that RSS men killed Mahatma Gandhi, was against the judicial verdict in the case. This is a deliberate attempt for electoral gains," he alleged.

The loss of crops, which were ready for harvest and the ones taken to the market for sale, comes up to Rs 42,000 crore approximately. Several statements of assurance have been given by politicians, including the Maharashtra CM, about relief but no help has been provided till date. It would be a great help to the farmers if the Union and State Governments declare an immediate relief of Rs 20,000 crore. IT Department sets up 24X7 monitoring cell to check use of black money during elections By Dominic Rebello
I
n order to discourage the use of black money during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department in Mumbai has set up a round-the-clock control room and complaint monitoring cell. Under the instructions of the Election Commission of India, the IT Department has launched a helpline number for the general people at large to inform it about any suspicious movement of large sums of cash or bullion in Mumbai. The Control Room telephone numbers are 22624011, 22635511, 22627275. In case the Income Tax authorities receive any information about the movement of large amounts of cash or bullion, they would investigate the cases as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act,
1961. The general public are advised to carry necessary documentary evidence regarding source of cash, such as pass book, copy of cheque, withdrawal slip etc. along with identity proof such as Income Tax PAN card or address proof of his residence, office/business, identity card, along with the purpose or use of carrying large amounts of cash or bullion in order to avoid unnecessary inconvenience. The department shall seize the cash or bullion if no satisfactory explanation is furnished. The Election Commission has put in place an expenditure monitoring mechanism for curbing misuse of money power during the general elections. The EC has created an Election Expenditure Monitoring cell within its establishment to monitor illegal money and also appointed a number of Expenditure Observers to keep a tab on money power. It has also asked the Ministry of Civil Aviation to operate Air Intelligence Units at all airports to keep track of illegal cash movement.

Official sources disclosed that Chavan, acting on the advice of his alliance partner, has recommended to Governor K. Shankarnara-
yanan to drop Gavit Senior from the state cabinet. It may be recalled that deputy chief minister and senior NCP state leader Ajit Pawar had warned Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit that he will have to quit his cabinet post if his daughter joined the BJP. Sources disclosed that Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit did attend the state cabinet meeting called in the evening by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Sources close to him added that Gavit had kept his resignation letter ready in his pocket, but was not inclined to tender it unless asked to do so. hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday lashed out at NCP president Sharad Pawar with Rahul Narvekar's entry into the NCP. Speaking to newspersons at his residence Matoshri remarked, “I will not backstab anyone like Narvekar did. The public will give him a fitting reply through votes”. Replying to queries over the government's response to demands for relief to the hailstorm-affected farmers, he remarked that the Congress-led UPA government itself was a national calamity that has befallen on the nation. However, the Sena suffered yet another jolt as its former MLA from Bhiwandi Yogesh Patil quit the party and joined the Congress. Asked about the steady desertions from the party ever since the Lok Sabha elections were announced, the Sena president stated that Rahul Narvekar was not a national issue. He further said that the NCP has suffered more holes than the Sena. Uddhav Thackeray denied that there was any infighting in the Sena and all were united in their cause to ensure victory for the BJP-led

Fast track: Rape cases was never on fast track W
henever some gruesome accident, a monstrous crime, a political or party protest occurs, the government, though wakes up a bit late – comes out with statements condemning or extending sympathy. If need be, in some cases, a cosmetic change is made. What is to be noted is that the government forgets about it all in no time at all. If the public uproar is very strong, some promises of action are made. Usually these promises are soon forgotten. There was a nationwide protest after the Nirbhaya happening. The Centre used excessive force on lakhs of people in Delhi. Even as it carried out a brutal crackdown, it made vague promises to frame rape laws. Later on, an exercise in this regard was carried out in parliament and some laws were passed. One of the recommendations was that a rape case should be put on a fast track. No specific time was fixed: The Nirbhaya case took as many as nine months. How fast the fast track should be was not mentioned in the law. It looks like the Nirbhaya case will be the only one in the fast track. The good old ways of rape trial have been resumed. It is possible even now the rape cases will be on the fast track but a fast track evidently has a new definition. The new rape law has done no good at all. In fact, the number of rape cases has increased. A large number of victims are children. The number of gang rapes have increased. Not much is being done about eradicating the crime. There are however declarations by the government that women need increased protection. This figures in poll manifesto also. They also promise special protection to women and a candidate thinks he will attract the voter more if he makes vehement reference to protection of women.

n all my years of covering politics and governance in Delhi, I have never known a political leader to have had as long a honeymoon with the media as Arvind Kejriwal. It is true that Rajiv Gandhi was much loved and forgiven everything for a very long time but the media in those days was not what it is today. It consisted in the 80s of a handful of national newspapers in English and Hindi and a handful of powerful regional newspapers whose boundaries were limited by language. Literacy levels were much lower than they are today and if you travelled in rural India, the sight of one man reading a newspaper to a group in a chai shop was common. Sometimes it was only a school master who could read in an entire village. I can remember villages in the vicinity of Delhi where nobody had ever seen a newspaper. So the Indian media did not have the capacity that it has today to influence people into believing in a leader.

We knew that his decision to take a metro to his swearing in ceremony was really just a gimmick but this is not how we reported it. Not until the new government's Law Minister conducted his midnight raid on a supposed house of ill repute did some of the gloss start to peel. But, even then the government of Kejriwal was given more grace points than most and Kejriwal himself was portrayed as a rare kind of new leader despite not being able to come up with anything resembling governance while he was chief minister. Not even when he pulled his own government down to concentrate his attention on AAP contesting the Lok Sabha elections did he get any flack for be-
Like Anna, like Arvind The first time I noticed the power that the Indian media now has to influence public opinion in a significant way was when Anna Hazare was hailed as India's saviour by TV anchors who made him out to be a new mahatma when he came to Jantar Mantar to begin his fast against corruption. They brought their studios to Jantar Mantar and reported his every move. Although Kejriwal was by his side all the time and although he himself fasted for many days afterwards at Jantar Mantar, he was not treated with the same kind of reverence and so he went almost unnoticed except as Anna's constant companion. Kejriwal's own honeymoon with the media began later. Much after he formed his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He tried grabbing headlines on a daily basis by one antic or another but it was only when he exposed the financial dealings and mysterious wealth of Robert Vadra that he became a media star. When he continued to take on people, something that the media rarely dares to do, he became a really big hero and TV reporters took to following him around and slavishly reporting all the things he did and said. When his first foray into electoral politics last December won him the government in

It is possible in the best governed states to find disgruntled people and Kejriwal sought them out assiduously. He announced before TV cameras that the farmers of Gujarat hated Modi and that the only 'development' in the state had benefited billionaires like Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani but somehow the TV reporters who travelled with him did not think it worth asking how Modi could have won three elections if he was so unpopular. It is only in recent days that Kejriwal has started to get bad publicity. It started with his decision to take a private plane from Jaipur to Delhi to attend the India Today conclave. He
tried to explain this away by saying there were no commercial flights that could have brought him here in time but his story was mocked in the media and then before we knew it he announced that if he became prime minister he would throw inconvenient journalists into jail. That comment ended the long honeymoon and as someone who has seen through his antics and his wiles from day one I admit to being very pleased that the honeymoon is over.
Kejriwal not a messiah It is wrong to treat political leaders like messiahs even if they themselves believe they are. Kejriwal has indicated more than once that he is convinced about being a real messiah and not just a politician. Notice the way in which he said he started believing in God because his party had done so well in the Delhi elections. Notice how he talks about himself always in the third person. Notice how he says, ad nauseum, that he is 'nobody' and that whether he wins or loses the credit for victory and the blame for defeat will rest on the shoulders of the 'janata'. Notice how he speaks of himself as someone who has come to rid India of corruption. If these are not signs of megalomania it is hard to think what are. It is the responsibility of political journalists to draw attention to them but this has not happened so far because we have been so mesmerised by Kejriwal. It would not be wrong to say that we helped create the messianic image that Kejriwal has. So if today he is threatening to jail journalists we in the media have only ourselves to blame. Kejriwal is an extremely clever politician who has succeeded in building a political party in a remarkably short time. He has drawn attention to some of the most glaring flaws in Indian political parties and he must be given full credit for this. He has brought hope to millions of urban, middle class Indians who had become cynical about elections and political leaders in general and for this he must be given fullest credit. What he is not is a messiah and it was very wrong of us in the media for having portrayed him as one. Now that he has shown his disdain for the media we must hope that there will be some real political reporting about Kejriwal and his political career.

mong the first responses called forth by my book 'What I Believe' were some letters from American Quakers. In these letters, expressing their sympathy with my views on the unlawfulness for a Christian of war and the use of force of any kind, the Quakers gave me details of their own so-called sect, which for more than two hundred years has actually professed the teaching of Christ on non-resistance to evil by force, and does not make use of weapons in self-defence. The Quakers sent me books, from which I learnt how they had, years ago, established beyond doubt the duty for a Christian of fulfilling the command of non-resistance to evil by force, and had exposed the error of the Church's teaching in allowing war and capital punishment. In a whole series of arguments and texts showing that war—that is, the wounding and killing of men—is inconsistent with a religion founded on peace and goodwill toward men, the Quakers maintain and prove that nothing has contributed so much to the obscuring of Christian truth in the eyes of the heathen, and has hindered so much the diffusion of Christianity through the world, as the disregard of this command by men calling themselves Christians, and the permission of war and violence to Christians. "Christ's teaching, which came to be known to men, not by means of violence and

ays after the state government proposed to increase the license fee of permit rooms and wine shops, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) in Maharashtra has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court opposing the proposed hike. The Maharashtra Government had in the month of February proposed to hike the license fee of permit rooms and wine shops by as much as 50 per cent. This had
invited heavy criticism from the hospitality industry which had termed the proposal as regressive and a certain death knell for the hotel industry. “Hotels in Maharashtra are one of the most taxed in the world. The industry cannot bear any more burdens. As it is, the hotels pay an aggregate of direct and indirect taxes to the tune of 38 per cent overall, compared to the five to seven per cent taxes in countries like Japan and China. We have now reached the stretch point. If the proposed hike in

Over & AbOve Helping underprivileged children to get an education is a worthy enough cause. But, Samina Khorakiwala’s NGO Khel Khel Mein does much more than that. Dev Goswami talks to the CEO of the NGO to find out the inspiration behind the initiative
E
ducation is important, but sometimes, it isn’t enough. This is something that the NGO, Khel Khel Mein realises. Their initiative aims to provide poor children with an education, as well as teach them human values through the use of recreational programmes and materials such as books, puzzles and toys. Samina Khorakiwala heads this NGO and in our talk with her, she tells us about herself, what led to the creation of Khel Khel Mein (KKM) and how they're changing the lives of children from the slums in Mumbai.
this positive response, we started several centers across slums in Mumbai. You have tried to make Khel Khel Mein about much more than an initiative that aims to provide education to poor children. Tell us more about that. At all 14 KKM centres, we have standardised our learning and recreational resources, employed trained teachers and follow a 10week programme for children who are between five to 12 years. This programme is a value based, edu-creational programme that teaches through fun and play. With toys, puzzles and story books, we teach them good human values. At each centre, they follow the seven human values of love, patience, humility, forgiveness, truth, giving and gratitude.

We do have young volunteers coming forward to help this programme in several ways. Time is the most precious form of commitment that an individual can give for Khel Khel Mein. There is an inner feeling of satisfaction and we aim to bring a smile on the face of every child at our centres. How has founding and being associated with Khel Khel Mein affected you personally? Having conceptualised this idea, it has been a satisfying experience. It is similar to nurturing your own child and seeing him or her fly to create their own unlimited potentialities. It brings me great happiness to see a smile on every child’s face.

The vibrant blue really makes Nagris look radiant. The high neck and billowy skirt gets evened out with a bit of skin-show thanks to the cut outs. But, what we like the most is the way she's accessorised — simple and not over-the-top. A great look for an evening out.

o, do you think your team leader, colleagues and boss are being unfair when they give you a slightly lower rating than you would have given yourself during your yearly appraisal? For people who think they can judge themselves best, self appraisal forms are a happy time of year. But, for those of us who dread the extra paperwork and are scared about coming across as insecure, under confident or worse still, pompous and arrogant, self appraisal forms may be the worst part of your job. Thankfully, not all companies will have you fill them out. For those that do, here’s a quick rundown on how to get them right.

Why am I appraIsIng myself? Self appraisal forms are not only a good way to let people see how hard you’ve been working, how far you’ve come and how driven you are for the future, they are also beneficial to the company. Say that you are willing to learn, grow or change and make it seem like your utmost priority is to be the best that you can be at your job. Don’t be a downer on your form! Be positive, even when you’re talking about areas you have failed in. Don’t blame people (whether it’s yourself or your colleagues) and don’t complain about responsibilities that have been given to you. Remember that passing the buck and making excuses are terrible traits in an employee. l Although you should be positive, don’t pile on the laurels. Don’t be afraid to talk about the areas in your career/ work that need improvement and focus on saying that you recognise your weak points (which is often half the battle won) and wish to improve upon them. l When you’re talking about all that you’ve achieved, don’t be vague. Pinpoint things specifically so that it’s clear how much you’ve grown from the get-go. l Be concise and professional. No one wants to read an essay about your life! l Be proud of the job you have. Employers can smell dissent a mile away, so if you make it seem like you’re unhappy and resentful, they’re going to pick up on it and wonder why, especially if you haven’t mentioned it. And if you do need to mention it, don’t make it seem like you’re the victim of too much work. The less special you make yourself seem, the more impressed they will be. irected by Mahabanoo ModyKotwal and Kaizaad Kotwal and produced by A Poor-Box Production, this flamboyant play, written in 2010 by Vagina Monologues writer Eve Ensler, made its debut on the Mumbai stage at NCPA last Saturday, 15th March. The play is a patchwork of several monologues, slide shows and song-anddance sequences. In these monologues, young women from all over the world talk of the problems they face every day, simply because they are women, and the extraordinary way in which they show resilience and stay strong through tough times. Says Mody-Kotwal, “In India, we always hear of the atrocities against Indian women. But women the world over are going through similar problems and this is never reported in our country. A need to show this to the Indian audience got me interested in the play.” The play begins with the entire cast asking questions in a sort of collective rhythm that grows into a crescendo of one voice asking the question — How to be a girl in this world? The play is episodic and almost Brechtian in nature, in that it makes generous use of slides and colourful lighting, along with songs that give the viewers a break from the intensity of the monologues to think on what the women are saying. None of the cast have one fixed role; they change from one monologue to the next, like they are opening a window into the worlds of these women. Sex trafficking, rape, slavery, child labour, objectification of women — these
are the issues the play talks about. In one monologue, a girl from Congo talks of how she was kidnapped and kept against her will by a soldier for two years and raped over and over until she could finally escape. She gives us eight rules that every girl should stick by to stay strong in such a situation. This powerful act ended in rule

no.8, that said “Do not feel guilty about how happy you feel when you hear he is dead.” Another powerful act came in the monologue of the 13-year-old girl from
China who is forced to work in a doll making factory. Her innocent talk reveals to us her likeness to the plastic dolls she helps make. She longs to be free but is unable to do anything about it, exactly like the immobile Barbie doll abused by its owners. The innocence of the child and her hidden longing for freedom was brought out very well by the actor. These monologues may sometimes leave us sad and angry but the girls narrate their problems with defiance and a will to survive that is infectious. Two such gritty performances were put up by the two youngest cast members, 14-year-old school girls Zaara and Deena. “When I saw that in my monologue I ask my boyfriend to wear a condom, I was apprehensive, I had never done something like that on stage before,” says Zaara, “But our directors explained the importance of sending out the social message on these taboo subjects and we understood,” Deena interjects. Deena did a monologue on a girl from Tehran who is forced to get a nose job to make her look beautiful. The play sometimes overdoes itself with its in-your-face acting and loud feminism and you hear uncomfortable mutters from the older audience during some of the more explicit scenes. Sometimes during an act like ‘Hunger Blog,’ where the young girl suffers from anorexia feels trivial compared to greater horrors like clitoridectomy and rape that other women suffer. In the end though, the play succeeds in what it set out to do — force us to think and question our patriarchal society that makes this emotional creature submit.
This sugar is much more moist as compared to other sugars. This is why it's used in cakes and desserts — to add flavour as well as a rich, moist texture. Sadly, this is not easy to source in Mumbai. Your best alternative would be to use Demerara sugar plus a tablespoon of molasses for each 100g of muscovado sugar you need.
molasses Got annoyed when we suggested using molasses in our previous point? Yes, we know that's not easily available too, so here's a replacement for it. Honey! This sticky substance is an ideal substitute because it has a similar taste and consistency. Use raw honey if possible and expect the cake to turn out a little lighter than what it would look like if it contained molasses.
cream of tartar You often just need a dash of this ingredient for a recipe but lack of it can ruin your baking! When the recipe calls for cream of tartar while beating egg whites, add the equal amount of white vinegar. While baking cookies, replace the baking soda and the cream of tartar in the recipe with baking powder. One teaspoon of baking powder replaces 1/3 tsp of baking soda and 2/3 tsp cream of tartar. If required in icing, you can omit it all together.
golden syrup This syrup is available but it's quite hard to find if you don't know where to look. Try gourmet food stores or shops that specialise in baking. But, if you need a substitute, honey comes to the rescue again. You can also try using jaggery (pop it in the microwave to melt it) though the flavour might vary.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (March 20, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (March 19, 2014) a net 7.40 points (0.11%) and closed at the 6524 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6530 points level. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6506 points level at 9.39 a.m. The index then bounced back into the green, rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6541 points level at 10.59 a.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a narrow range of 35 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 33 were gainers, while 17 were losers. Substantial buying was seen in metal and FMCG stocks, while substantial selling was seen in IT, technology and PSU stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 0.18%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 754 were gainers, 737 were losers and 76 remained unchanged. We attended the TCS analyst meet and key takeaways are: (1) Expect Q4 to be softer than Q3 in CC terms; (2) Growth to be led by Europe and Latam, India to decline; (3) Stronger outlook for FY15 over FY14 maintained; and (4) Margins to drop 40-50bps QoQ due to investments. Overall, the near-term commentary was soft but management retains its positive discretionary spend-led FY15 outlook. We think predictable growth with strong execution should help sustain TCS’s valuation premium (19x FY15E P/E) to the sector. BUY. Q4 softer than Q3: Management indicated that Q4 is likely to be softer than Q3 on a CC basis. Geographically, the US and UK are expected to grow at the company average, while growth in Europe should remain strong. India is expected to decline, though not as much as in Q3. Overall, we believe Q4 CC growth rates should come in at ~3% QoQ. Maintains FY15>FY14 demand outlook: Management maintained its stronger outlook for FY15 on a recovery in discretionary spends. While TCS has seen a relatively soft performance in H2FY14, we think a supportive US macro and offshoring in Europe should drive growth. Margins soft due to investments: Operationally, management expects to be able to keep margins steady, though investments could shave 40-50bps off margins in Q4. Other income FX gains are expected to be flat QoQ with no material movement in FX. Valuations and View: We note that valuations, though at a premium to the sector, have moderated to 19x FY15E earnings. We think predictable growth and the ability to navigate margins will support TCS’s premium over the sector. An improvement in demand outlook and continued execution would be the key stock triggers. Maintain BUY with a TP of Rs 2,450.

MSIL reviewed terms of proposed Suzuki Gujarat plant (SG), to fully address concerns raised by the investors. Further, it is voluntarily seeking minority shareholders’ approval for this arrangement. Post these revisions, we believe focus would return to the fundamentals, which are clearly stabilizing and showing initial signs of improvement with increase in footfalls/ enquiries. MSIL is a clean play on economic recovery in India. Post this clarification, we are reverting valuations for TP to 10x FY16 Cash EPS (implied ~16x FY16 EPS), which we had discounted by 20% due to ambiguity surrounding Gujarat plant. Maintain Buy with TP of ~INR2,500 (16x FY16 EPS or 10x Cash EPS). We rate MSIL as our top-pick in the auto sector. As per revised terms, entire capex would be funded by depreciation and equity contribution by Suzuki Motor (Parent), indicating there wouldn’t be any profit retention by SG. Earlier capex funding was also from profit margins for car sold from SG. Effectively, pricing of cars from SG would be at actual cost + depreciation (v/s earlier pricing = cost + depreciation + margins). The impact of any direct or indirect taxes on account of the contract manufacturing agreement would be assessed before finalizing the agreement. It reiterated that SG would function on basis that it would neither generate surpluses nor make losses. As per revised terms, since pricing of cars sold by SG would be cost + depreciation, it would be breaking even at PBT level. However, there might be temporary cash accumulation (on account of depreciation) as capex cash outflow wouldn’t match with depreciation. We believe these revisions should clarify any doubts about intentions of the parent, and makes us believe that Suzuki would be solely interested in derisking its Indian manufacturing operations after its experience of Manesar industrial unrest. Our preliminary calculation suggests that this arrangement could add ~INR340/share of NPV due to capex savings (ex depn). We will re-evaluate as we deal get formalized and further clarity emerges. Valuation & view: We believe MSIL has addressed two major investor concerns on the Gujarat plant: Funding for additional capex: The additional capex will be funded only by a combination of depreciation and equity infusion by Suzuki, with no mark-up on car sold to MSIL. Gujarat plant ownership: In the event of non-renewal of the manufacturing arrangement, the assets of the Gujarat subsidiary would be transferred to MSIL at book value (v/s a fair value based on independent valuation). We believe the Gujarat facility arrangement through Suzuki’s 100% subsidiary is beneficial for MSIL, improving overall profits (with treasury income) and return ratios. Also, accumulated cash can be invested by MSIL to fortify its marketing network and strengthening its R&D. This clarification also makes clear that Suzuki’s intention is not to profit from this investment directly but through MSIL, given its 56% stake. The impact of the Gujarat facility on MSIL’s financials would be seen only in FY17. Our preliminary estimates indicate NPV of ~INR340/sh (~19% of CMP) for benefits of this deal accruing to MSIL. The stock trades at 14.9x/11.2x FY15E/16E consolidated EPS of INR116.9/INR155.1.

ore Indian companies are improving their high financial leverage and boosting their credit profiles by adopting measures such as sale of equity and assets or using their free operating cash flows to reduce debt... The size of the measures taken and our expectation of the impact on a company's financial ratios will determine the improvement on the company's credit profile.” , said Standard & Poor's Ratings Servicesin a report released yesterday. "Besides raising equity and selling non-core assets, Indian companies are also divesting stakes in businesses," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Mehul Sukkawala. "In our view, the companies' main reasons for improving their financial profiles are the weak economy and high interest rates in India, which have adversely affected cash flows and debt-servicing ability. Another reason is companies are refocusing on reducing debt after years of investing significantly on rapid growth."
Standard & Poor's recently revised the outlook on its 'B+' rating on Tata Power Co. Ltd. to positive and raised the rating on Bharti Airtel Ltd. to 'BBB-' after both Indian companies started focusing on lowering debt, in addition to benefiting from favorable regulatory developments. Tata Power announced a rights issue of Indian rupees (INR) 20 billion and a stake sale in a coal mine amounting to about US$500 million. Bharti Airtel also raised US$1.25 billion through equity offering last year and we believe the company would continue to take measures such as sale of stakes in subsidiaries (such as Bharti Infratel Ltd.) or non-core assets (such as tower infrastructure). Tata Steel Ltd. has also taken steps to reduce its leverage. The company sold part of its investment in Titan Industries Ltd. shares in 2013. Tata Steel has put its Borivali land up for sale and we believe the company would take further steps to reduce leverage. The company has also deferred phase 2 of its Orissa greenfield project; we view this to be positive for free cash flow
generation after the completion of phase 1, which Tata Steel expects by March 2015. Many companies in the infrastructure sector with very high leverage are also considering selling assets or stakes in subsidiaries to improve their debt-servicing ability, financial flexibility, and liquidity. For example, GMR Infrastructure Ltd. has sold two of its road projects in 2014 and signed an agreement to sell its 40% stake in the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport. We believe this would enable the company, and others like it, to withstand the current weak economic environment and position well for future opportunities. Standard & Poor's also expects companies to reduce debt through positive free operating cash flows. This is because many Indian companies have significantly reduced capital expenditures and expansion plans in the current economic environment. This is especially the case for sectors that typically use high capital expenditures, such as power, metals and mining, and infrastructure.

n analysis of national highway projects by CRISIL Research, shows a significant slowdown in traffic growth over the past couple of years. In addition, base traffic (in the first year of operations) on many highways has been well below estimates made by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Add cost overruns, and what you get is severely strained financial viability of highway projects. CRISIL Research’s analysis of 15
national highway stretches shows traffic growth, in PCU (passenger car unit) terms, slowed to about 3-4 % in fiscal 2012 and 2-3 % in 2013, compared with 7-8 % in between fiscals 2007 and 2011. At the same time, however, rental values remained under pressure across certain industrial markets, according to CBRE’s latest report, India Logistics Market View – H2 2013. Demand for logistics and warehousing space was largely driven by the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and third party logistics (3PLs) sectors; while engineering and manufacturing firms adopted a wait-and-watch approach. Leasing and transaction activity declined across most warehousing micromarkets during the second half of 2013. Due to weak leasing sentiments, rental values either remained stable or witnessed a
marginal decline across markets. The Northern Corridor of Hyderabad, Bhiwandi near Mumbai, the Southern Corridor of Bangalore, and the Northern Industrial Belt of Chennai were some of the preferred micro-markets among FMCG firms in 2013. Our analysis shows 5 out of 6 projects have an average debt service coverage ratio (DSCR) of less than one in the first 5 years of operations. This means, if there is no additional capital infusion, developers will find it difficult to service loans. Also, project returns today are in the 8-14 % range – less than half the 22-26 % arrived at based on NHAI’s traffic and cost estimates," said Rahul Prithiani, Director - Industry Research, CRISIL.

Giving a thumbs up to BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi ahead of the general elections, a report said Gujarat tops the list of states in terms of economic freedom, improving its position from the 5th place in 2005. "Gujarat is not only the freest state, but it has also registered the fastest rate of improvement (from 0.46 to 0.65). The second fastest improver is Andhra Pradesh (from 0.40 to 0.50)," said the report on Economic Freedom of the States of India (EFSI)- 2013. The report, jointly authored by economists Ashok Gulati, Bibek Debroy, Laveesh Bhandari and journalist Swaminathan Aiyar, is based on an index which takes into account parameters like size of the government, legal structure and security of property rights and regulation of business and labour.
CPSE ETF Gets Bids For Rs 1,800 Crore
CPSE Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) has got bids of over Rs 1,800 crore at the end of second day yesterday with strong response pouring in from retail investors. The ETF had yesterday received bids worth Rs 835 crore from seven anchor investors, including State Bank of India and insurance companies. Sources said there was strong retail response and as much as Rs 1,000 crore has been collected yesterday. The ETF, through which government aims to garner Rs 3000 crore, is open for retail and other institutional buyers till March 21.
Sebi Wants PSBs As 'Public' Shareholders In SEs
Capital markets regulator Sebi has suggested that banks and financial institutions from public sector be considered as 'public shareholders' in stock exchanges, but the view has been rejected by Finance Ministry. The issue is likely to be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of Sebi's board, which would also be apprised of the impact of the Finance Ministry's decision for not agreeing to such a proposal from the capital markets regulator, sources said.
Govt Asks NTPC For Rs 233 Cr Bank Guarantee
The government has ordered power major NTPC to furnish a Rs 233 crore bank guarantee to expedite development of a coal block in Chhattisgarh and said failure to submit the surety may result in cancellation of the mine. The Talaipalli block in Mand Raigarh region of the state was allocated to the staterun electricity producer in January 2006 to supply coal to the 4,000 MW Lara Super Thermal Power Project. NTPC has spent Rs 1,464.5 crore on the project, including Rs 325 crore on development of the mine.
India's Domestic Demand May Witness A Recovery
India's domestic demand is likely to recover from the sharp slowdown it experienced over the course of 2013, largely driven by the growing population and nascent middle-class, an HSBC report says. According to global financial services major, despite its recent slowdown, India's economic promise remains substantial, with the growing population and nascent domestic middle class generating a growing market for consumption goods. "India's growing population and nascent middle-class will generate substantial demand for consumer goods from abroad," HSBC said.
Assets With Portfolio Managers Rise To `7.52 Lakh Cr In Feb
Assets under management (AUM) of portfolio managers have risen to Rs 7.52 lakh crore in February, as per Sebi data. Assets under management of portfolio managers have gone up from 7,32,970 crore in January to Rs 7,52,775 crore at the end of February, according to the latest data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). They had touched a record level of Rs 9,58,121 crore in August, 2013. The total AUM has nearly doubled since the data was first released by Sebi in December, 2010. In February, portfolio managers individually handled assets worth Rs 5.75 lakh crore for discretionary services, Rs 1.38 lakh crore for advisory services and another Rs 39,277 crore for non-discretionary investments.
Shipping Min May Seek Funding Support For 2 Major Ports
The Shipping Ministry may seek funding support for two major ports to attract more developers and is likely to approach the Cabinet on the issue. The government has finalised Sagar (West Bengal) and Dugarajapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) as two sites for setting up of the ports. "At the Sagar port there is also a proposal to build a rail bridge which means that the rate of return for that port will about 8%. So without VGF (viability gap funding), participation of bidders is an issue," a Shipping Ministry official told PTI.
TCS Inks Pact With Garuda Indonesia Airlines
Country's largest software services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has deployed a maintenance, pepair and overhaul (MRO) application for Garuda Indonesia Airlines. With the TCS SWIFT MRO solution, Garuda replaced over 50 legacy applications, implemented over 300 business processes, and migrated over three million records of data for 140 aircrafts and fitted parts into a unified solution, TCS said in a statement. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI

While the general theme of this film resembles “The Blue Lagoon” (the film for which this is a sequel), the basic plot is quite different. We open the film with a ship finding the craft with our original characters in it, Richard and Emmeline dead and Paddy alive. Taken in by Sarah, a widow with an infant baby girl Lilli, Richard (Paddy) is cared for in a return to civilization. Sanjeet Kumar, better known as Sangram Singh, is a wrestler who has appeared in a number of reality shows: ‘Survivor India’, ‘Sach Ka Saamna’ and ‘Big Boss.’ After creating ripples on the small screen, he will now be seen acting. Life OK has roped in the international wrestler for the popular weekend series ‘SuperCops v/s SuperVillain: Shapath.’ Sandeep Hattangadi caught up with the handsome sportsman for a brief chat.

What is your role in the serial? I will be seen as Senior Inspector Sangram Singh in the series ‘Shapath’. I have been labeled as the ‘He man’ of television, who is going to play the role of a good cop in this fight of good vs evil. I will be a permanent member of the cast. You have been a real life cop. Did that help you while essaying this role? I have been associated with the Delhi Police which makes me well suited for this role. The audience will see my wrestling capabilities on this show.
What made you accept this show? It's a first of its kind show on Indian television - 'SuperCops v/s SuperVillains: Shapath' is one of the most popular series on Life OK, involving the adventures of super cops as they deal with villains with destructive powers. My character will add a new layer to the already existing popularity of the show.

The 30-year-old actress, who will again be seen with Tandon in the upcoming TV show 'Khatron Ke Khiladi' after their stint in 'Bigg Boss', says she does not need any reality show to keep their relationship going. "We had expressed our love for each other on a reality show but now it has become very personal. We don't need any reality show again to prove how much we love each other. Joining the same show to-

IRPUR: India defeated England by 20 runs in their second and final warm-up game at the ICC World T20 here today. Sent into bat, India scored 178/4 and then restricted England to 158/6 in 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers claiming two wickets for 23 in his four-over spell even as newcomer Moeen Ali with fine knock of 46 and Michael Lumb with 36 tried to breathe life into the English effort. Earlier Virat Kohli hit a smashing 74 and was ably complemented by Suresh Raina as India overcame early jitters to post a commendable total. Raina smashed his way to a 31ball-54 while Kohli was unbeaten on 74 off 48 balls as the duo added 81 runs in 8.5 overs after England left the 2007 champions tottering at 39 for three in the first six overs. The turnaround happened when Kohli and Raina suddenly took off in the 13th over bowled by left-arm

IRPUR: West Indies’ bowling mainstay Sunil Narine says that there is no variation called “teesra” like what Saeed Ajmal is believed to deliver and it is only about playing “mindgames” with the opposition batsmen. Asked whether there is a possibility of a “teesra” apart from traditional off-break and the “doosra” (wrong’un) that goes the other way, he gave a straight-forward answer. “It’s probably playing mindgames with the batsmen. Batsmen nowadays can do a lot of things as the game revolves around them. There is very little that bowlers can do, so might just play mindgames,” Narine said during an interaction ahead of ICC World T20 campaign here. As an extension to that answer, he
agreed that trends are changing in T20 and bowlers have their task cut out. “Bowlers are trying out something new everyday. EW DELHI: Determined to fight his way back into the national side, Gautam Gambhir today said he would be happy grinding it out in the domestic circuit for long rather than using the Indian Premier League as a “platform” to make a “personal comeback”.Once considered as Indian batting’s mainstay, Gambhir now finds himself in cricketing wilderness owing to his indifferent form, but the out-of-favour opener has not lost hopes of returning to international cricket and would be happily plying his trade in the Deodhar Trophy for North Zone and Kolkata Knights Riders in the IPL. I will never use the IPL (as a platform). I will use the IPL as a platform to do well for my side KKR. What all matters to me is good showing for KKR. I don’t play the IPL for my personal comebacks. I play IPL for my team and do well for them. Performing for KKR is all that is in back of my mind,” Gambhir told PTI.

That’s probably where I have struggled. My action is quite pure and I could not generate enough pace on the one that turns the other way,” Tredwell said during an Open Session of the England team. “I probably went over the top with it at one point and it started affecting my off-breaks. So I have to be careful with it depending on my stock ball,” Tredwell said. But the 32-year-old, who has played 30 ODIs, 11 T20 Internationals and a Test for England, however, is not judgmental as to whether it is ethical or not to bowl it. “Certainly there should be permissible limits. I think if someone can bowl a doosra, the coaches should encourage if someone has a different technique. You don’t need to stop because it is something that the old-school doesn’t believe in,” he said. Has he ever spoken to Sunil Narine about the finer points of bowling a doosra, Tredwell said, “I did speak to Narine in West Indies. It’s always nice to pick up finer points from great bowlers but at the end of the day, it depends on what your strengths are.” Narine, on his part, evaded the question as to whether it is legal to bowl a doosra or not.

WASHINGTON: Researchers have developed a new test to detect performance-enhancing drugs which they claim is 1,000 times more sensitive than current methods. "How much of a drug someone took or how long ago they took it are beyond the analyst's control. The only thing you can control is how sensitive your method is," said Daniel Armstrong at the University of Texas at Arlington, who led the team. "Our goal is to develop ultra-sensitive methods that will extend the window of detection, and we have maybe the most sensitive method in the world," Armstrong said. Hongyue Guo, a graduate student in Armstrong's lab, explained that the new strategy is a simple variation on a common testing technique called mass spectrometry (MS).
Pistorius’ girlfriend was standing when she was shot
PRETORIA (SOUTH AFRICA): Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend was standing in a toilet cubicle and facing the closed door when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four hollow point bullets fired by the doubleamputee athlete, a police ballistics expert testified at Pistorius' murder trial. Reeva Steenkamp then fell back onto a magazine holder in the cubicle and was struck in the right arm and head by the last two shots fired from the 9 mm pistol through the door as she crossed her arms over her head to protect herself, Capt Christiaan Mangena said. He testified that he believed the second bullet shot missed Steenkamp and ricocheted off a wall inside the cubicle and broke into fragments, which caused bruising on her back.
Jwala-Ashwini pair look to roar back to form at Indian Open
NEW DELHI: India’s top doubles shuttler Ashwini Ponappa is not losing sleep over recent setbacks at the international tournaments and wants to roar back to form with partner Jwala Gutta at the Indian Open Super Series next month. Ponnappa, and Gutta, failed to qualify for the All England Championship before making the first round exit at the Swiss Open.”We are not losing hearts even though we have lost. You have to see we got some tough draws. We are looking to get back to the form at the Indian Open. It’s about learning from our mistakes. We are getting better with each tournament. When you play well, you know that you are going in the right direction,” Ashwini said.
