Against the backdrop of the unseasonal rains and severe hailstorm in many districts of the state that destroyed crops in 28 districts, Chavan took stock of the situation yesterday. He said, “As you all know, Lok Sabha elections have been declared and the model code of conduct has been enforced. e’re all aware that the number of sparrows is on the decline, and we know this because that distinctive and consistent chirp that was audible years ago has slowly lessened, if not disappeared. It’s World Sparrow Day today (March 20) and there are a number of things every Mumbaikar should know and do, to save the sparrow, before it’s too late. The Bombay Natural History Society conducted a 6 month nationwide online survey (www.citizensparrow.in) to gauge the status of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) recently. Atul Sathe of BNHS, says, “Over a period of time there has been a decline in the number of sparrows in urban areas, especially in northern and southern India. The decline is not so sharp in Western India. Having said that, compared to the last ten years, it is much lesser.” The House Sparrow, which is the most common type of sparrow in India, has declined due to a number of reasons. Pics by Sudharak Olwe

A modern Kamathipura chronicle

This evening at 5 pm, we shall join the city's eminences and other well-known people, like South Mumbai MP Milind Deora, Bhimrao Ambedkar, grandson of B.R. Ambedkar, designer Maheka Mirpuri, singer Pankaj Udas, Dr. Lahane of the J J Hospital, funny man Cyrus Brocha, poet Jafar Bhai and other prominent people at the Jehangir Art Gallery on the terrace, for the inauguration of a very special exhibition of photographs. Titled “11th Lane Kamathipura”, they are the work of press photographer Sudharak Olwe, and the exhibition will be open till March 26 from 11 am to 7 pm. We are particularly looking forward to the show, both because of the subject as well as because of the man who has shot the pictures. Sudharak Olwe is that rarity among photographers working for the press, a man who charts his own path and dreams his own dreams. Bringing to bear the enromous sensitivity of the true empath, he often picks ugly subjects, and imbues them with a shining beauty that can only come from the conviction that these are stories worth being told. The title of the exhibition itself should be enough to draw in the footfalls, for Kamathipura, first established in 1795 as a place for kamathis or construction labourers

working on the city's Causeways, descended over the next 50 years into Asia's third largest red light district. The name itself is guaranteed to draw in the pruriently curious, but here they are bound to be disappointed. Sure Sudharak, the chronicler of images featuring the dispossessed and the deprived, has photographed the area in its red-lighted glory. And he has shot prostitutes as well. He has been working in the district for more than a decade now. But through his exhibition Sudharak has tried to showcase the plight and the living conditions of the sex-workers. It was Dalit poet Namdeo Dhasal’s “Golpitha” poems that led him to Kamathipura. Sudharak was fascinated by the giant of a man working for the rights of a people the rest of the city despised. Kamathipura was the world that Namdeo grew up in. He called it “do number ki duniya”, the bottom of the world. It included pimps, sex workers, hijras, petty criminals, homeless urchins, beggars and thieves. He considered them “my people - these lumpen; I am one of them. My poetry is about life here.” Sudharak read his poetry. It was an assault. Every word was a slap in the face, a punch in the gut. Here are some lines from

As usual, our Nana Chudasama hits the nail on the head with his smart crack banner on the corner of Veer Nariman Road and Marine Drive. Look at the way we are truly becoming sick of the noise, the cacophony and the high decibel rallies dotting the landscape. And the racket has scarcely begun!

In classic Kamathipura style, women wait in their small homes for customers as the light frames them stagily, as if they have deliberately posed. Elsewhere, a beautiful girl looks into a future that she cannot see, and finally, a reminder that the moments of beauty they create for themselves is fleeting, that the actuality is filthy, grim and as uninviting as this mattress that serves as a room.

his poem entitled Mandakini Patil: A Young Prostitute: My Intended Collage On a barren blue canvas Her clothes ripped off, her thighs blasted open, A sixteen-year-old girl surrendering herself to pain. And a pig: its snout full of blood…. Never before had I seen a face so devoid of light As was yours; and of a thousand other females like you. Flashing out from so many countries, and so many cages; And bearing so many different names…. You make anguish scream inside me; and stream inside me; and appropriate me. Is that the scream of an ending; or is the end itself a scream beginning? However, what Sudharak saw wasn’t the Kamathipura of the early 1970s when Namdeo had written the Golpitha poems. This is a changed place. The cages have gone; work on social empowerment is underway; HIV has entered; globalization has taken its toll; the people have been uprooted; even the physical landscape has undergone change. Builders are venturing in, the economic topography is changing as well. The women Sudharak shoots are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends and neighbours. They have faces and eyes and hearts and minds. Yes, they can be vicious; they can lie and cheat, betray and be betrayed, beat and be beaten up...their vulnerability takes many forms.

For more than two decades, Sudharak has been photographing the history of social and economic inequality that is present in our daily lives in this city of wealth and power. His work has appeared in many leading newspapers and has been acknowledged internationally. He started with the Afternoon Despatch and Courier before he went on to find his niche He spent more than a decade recording the conservancy workers of the BMC going about their filthy work, vulnerable to every noxious gas that escapes our sewers as they clean them. His work is not pretty – it is unforgettable.

Kuch bhi bolta hai!

We can understand that the Kurla police must be in a mild panic at having to appear in the High Court in answer to lawyer Abha Singh's questioning the delay in lodging a missing persons complaint in the Esther Anuhya case. But it is obviously a very mild panic indeed, one that stems from the confidence that there will be no consequences to the callouness they are accused of. But to say they extended “full cooperation” to the distraught family and only did not file the complaint because the family did not insist is a bit thick and indicative precisely of the callousness and negligence of which they have been accused. Now if only the court throws their own book back at them!

In addition to the procedure, the civic authority has already started the process of discontinuing the water as well as electric supply to the residents who have not vacated the dilapidated buildings. The civic administration has planned to carry out a pre-monsoon drive so as to examine the buildings in the city legally and to avoid further collapses during the monsoons they may also forcibly ask the residents to vacate their homes and not to risk their lives.

MHADA employees have no legal right to pension By Philip Varghese

T

he Bombay High Court yesterday rejected a petition filed by employees of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), a government body set up to provide affordable housing to the people of the state, seeking pension on superannuation. The bench, headed by Justice V M Kanade, rejected the plea of employees on the ground that there was no statutory legal right available to them to claim pensionary benefits. The employees had pleaded that MHADA had already passed a resolution deciding to grant pensionary benefits to workers who had joined after November 1, 2005. However, the state had not granted approval to this proposal. The employees also demanded pension on the ground that the state had adopted Civil Service Rules which provides for payment of monthly pension on superannuation. However, the bench held that mere adoption of Civil Service Rules was not sufficient to create a legal right to claim pension. "Any decision taken by

MHADA can come into force only if the State Government approves it. We are inclined to reject the plea for issuing direction to provide for pensionary benefits to the employees," said the bench. Advocate General Darius Khambata argued that it is not a legal right of the employees to get pension. Such an issue cannot be claimed as a matter of right. Whether to give pension or not is a matter of policy decision for the state. Moreover, if the state decided to give pension to MHADA employees, then it may have to give such benefit to the employees of other state government organisations or state corporations. In that case, the financial burden on the state exchequer would rise, the Advocate General said. A similar petition had been filed before the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court wherein the state had informed that the Chief Minister had rejected such a proposal (of MHADA deciding not to grant pension to workers). Thereafter, the HC asked the state cabinet to decide the issue which too turned down the proposal.

RSS moves court against Rahul Gandhi

T

he RSS yesterday filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi in a Maharashtra court over his remarks linking the saffron organisation to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The criminal complaint was filed by Rajesh Kunte, Secretary of RSS unit at Bhiwandi, a powerloom town near Thane. Addressing a rally at Sonale in Bhiwandi on March 6, Rahul had said, "RSS people killed Gandhiji." In his complaint to the court, Kunte said the remarks were defamatory and sought action against the Congress leader. BJP has already moved the Election Commission against the Congress vice president. "I registered a criminal complaint against Rahul Gandhi with the First Class Magistrate Court at Bhiwandi. Through his speech, he has harmed the reputation of our organisation. The remarks were made with an ulterior motive," Kunte told PTI. "His allegation, that RSS men killed Mahatma Gandhi, was against the judicial verdict in the case. This is a deliberate attempt for electoral gains," he alleged.

farmers who have incurred heavy losses with their crops since February, due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms, which have affected 14,917 villages across the state. The PIL had been filed as pursuant to elections scheduled in Maharashtra on April 10, 17 and 24. The Model Code of Conduct has been implemented. One of the points in the code stipulates that the Government during this period shall not declare any financial assistance to any person. “This creates a hurdle to declare reliefs to the farmers who have been affected due to the natural calamity. Land measuring over 17 lakh hectares has been affected in the natural calamity. Crops of summer rice, jowar, wheat, vegetables, onion, sugarcane, corn, maize, groundnuts, and horticultural products like banana, pomegranate, grapes, orange, papaya, mango and sweet lime have been damaged. The loss of crops, which were ready for harvest and the ones taken to the market for sale, comes up to Rs 42,000 crore approximately. Several statements of assurance have been given by politicians, including the Maharashtra CM, about relief but no help has been provided till date. It would be a great help to the farmers if the Union and State Governments declare an immediate relief of Rs 20,000 crore. The affected farmers should also be given relief on payment of revenue and repayment of farm loans this year,” the PIL stated. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Hailstorm-affected will get maximum relief Continued on pg 1 « to be given at informal cabinet meetings. The state government has demanded a financial package of Rs.5,000 crore from the Centre and also apprised the Election Commission of India about the damage caused. We are trying everything to help out the farmers who are in distress,” he added. Chavan clarified that a high-level group comprising Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde,

Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, has been formed. A Central team has recently completed its tour of the affected areas. IT Department sets up 24X7 monitoring cell to check use of black money during elections By Dominic Rebello

I

n order to discourage the use of black money during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department in Mumbai has set up a round-the-clock control room and complaint monitoring cell. Under the instructions of the Election Commission of India, the IT Department has launched a helpline number for the general people at large to inform it about any suspicious movement of large sums of cash or bullion in Mumbai. The Control Room telephone numbers are 22624011, 22635511, 22627275. In case the Income Tax authorities receive any information about the movement of large amounts of cash or bullion, they would investigate the cases as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act,

1961. The general public are advised to carry necessary documentary evidence regarding source of cash, such as pass book, copy of cheque, withdrawal slip etc. along with identity proof such as Income Tax PAN card or address proof of his residence, office/business, identity card, along with the purpose or use of carrying large amounts of cash or bullion in order to avoid unnecessary inconvenience. The department shall seize the cash or bullion if no satisfactory explanation is furnished. The Election Commission has put in place an expenditure monitoring mechanism for curbing misuse of money power during the general elections. The EC has created an Election Expenditure Monitoring cell within its establishment to monitor illegal money and also appointed a number of Expenditure Observers to keep a tab on money power. It has also asked the Ministry of Civil Aviation to operate Air Intelligence Units at all airports to keep track of illegal cash movement.

Dr. Heena Gavit finally joins BJP, given LS ticket from Nandurbar CM Chavan drops Gavit senior from cabinet on the advice of NCP By Prashant Hamine

E

nding days of speculation, Dr. Heena Gavit, daughter of NCP's minister for medical education Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit, formally joined the BJP. She was promptly given the

Dr. Vijaykumar Gait party ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Nandurbar (ST) reserved constituency. She will take on 10-time sitting MP and Congress union minister Manikrao Gavit. At a late evening meeting of the state cabinet, sources disclosed that the NCP asked Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to drop Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit from the ministry. Official sources disclosed that Chavan, acting on the advice of his alliance partner, has recommended to Governor K. Shankarnara-

yanan to drop Gavit Senior from the state cabinet. It may be recalled that deputy chief minister and senior NCP state leader Ajit Pawar had warned Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit that he will have to quit his cabinet post if his daughter joined the BJP. Sources disclosed that Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit did attend the state cabinet meeting called in the evening by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Sources close to him added that Gavit had kept his resignation letter ready in his pocket, but was not inclined to tender it unless asked to do so. In a related development, the BJP also gave a Lok Sabha ticket to former NCP Thane Zilla Parishad president Kapil Patil from Bhiwandi constituency. In doing so, the party has laid to rest the speculation about party heavyweight MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha being considered for the Bhiwandi constituency. Late in evening, Dr. Heena Gavit accompanied by leader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde, party MLAs Girish Mahajan and Jaykumar Rawal landed in New Delhi. Dr. Heena Gavit joined the party in the presence of party president Rajnath Singh, prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Nitin Gadkari, Gopinath Munde and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitely.

hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday lashed out at NCP president Sharad Pawar with Rahul Narvekar's entry into the NCP. Speaking to newspersons at his residence Matoshri remarked, “I will not backstab anyone like Narvekar did. The public will give him a fitting reply through votes”. Replying to queries over the government's response to demands for relief to the hailstorm-affected farmers, he remarked that the Congress-led UPA government itself was a national calamity that has befallen on the nation. However, the Sena suffered yet another jolt as its former MLA from Bhiwandi Yogesh Patil quit the party and joined the Congress. Asked about the steady desertions from the party ever since the Lok Sabha elections were announced, the Sena president stated that Rahul Narvekar was not a national issue. He further said that the NCP has suffered more holes than the Sena. Uddhav Thackeray denied that there was any infighting in the Sena and all were united in their cause to ensure victory for the BJP-led

Uddhav Thackeray NDA in the Lok Sabha polls. Last night, Thackeray held a two-hour meeting with top Mahayuti leaders to chalk out their campaign strategy. In a related development, PWP leader Jayant Patil called on MNS president Raj Thackeray at his Krishnakunj residence in Dadar to enlist MNS support for PWP Lok Sabha candidates in Maval and Raigad constituencies. Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray welcomed famous television

Rahul Narvekar actor Dr. Amol Kolhe into the Sena fold. Dr. Kolhe became famous after essaying the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a Marathi serial. Speaking to newspersons, Dr. Kolhe in a sarcastic remark aimed at the MNS chief stated that Maharashtrian leadership needs to be aggressive but at the same time

should show restraint. Replying to a query, the Sena president clarified that the party will not field any independent candidate against former BJP president Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur. He assured the BJP leadership that he would not be a backstabber like the NCP leadership.

Ponder awhile... The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly. — Theodore Roosevelt

Fast track: Rape cases was never on fast track W

henever some gruesome accident, a monstrous crime, a political or party protest occurs, the government, though wakes up a bit late – comes out with statements condemning or extending sympathy. If need be, in some cases, a cosmetic change is made. What is to be noted is that the government forgets about it all in no time at all. If the public uproar is very strong, some promises of action are made. Usually these promises are soon forgotten. There was a nationwide protest after the Nirbhaya happening. The Centre used excessive force on lakhs of people in Delhi. Even as it carried out a brutal crackdown, it made vague promises to frame rape laws. Later on, an exercise in this regard was carried out in parliament and some laws were passed. One of the recommendations was that a rape case should be put on a fast track. No specific time was fixed: The Nirbhaya case took as many as nine months. How fast the fast track should be was not mentioned in the law. It looks like the Nirbhaya case will be the only one in the fast track. The good old ways of rape trial have been resumed. It is possible even now the rape cases will be on the fast track but a fast track evidently has a new definition. The new rape law has done no good at all. In fact, the number of rape cases has increased. A large number of victims are children. The number of gang rapes have increased. Not much is being done about eradicating the crime. There are however declarations by the government that women need increased protection. This figures in poll manifesto also. They also promise special protection to women and a candidate thinks he will attract the voter more if he makes vehement reference to protection of women.

I

n all my years of covering politics and governance in Delhi, I have never known a political leader to have had as long a honeymoon with the media as Arvind Kejriwal. It is true that Rajiv Gandhi was much loved and forgiven everything for a very long time but the media in those days was not what it is today. It consisted in the 80s of a handful of national newspapers in English and Hindi and a handful of powerful regional newspapers whose boundaries were limited by language. Literacy levels were much lower than they are today and if you travelled in rural India, the sight of one man reading a newspaper to a group in a chai shop was common. Sometimes it was only a school master who could read in an entire village. I can remember villages in the vicinity of Delhi where nobody had ever seen a newspaper. So the Indian media did not have the capacity that it has today to influence people into believing in a leader.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2014

Delhi, most political commentators reported the event as a 'game changer'. We knew that his decision to take a metro to his swearing in ceremony was really just a gimmick but this is not how we reported it. Not until the new government's Law Minister conducted his midnight raid on a supposed house of ill repute did some of the gloss start to peel. But, even then the government of Kejriwal was given more grace points than most and Kejriwal himself was portrayed as a rare kind of new leader despite not being able to come up with anything resembling governance while he was chief minister. Not even when he pulled his own government down to concentrate his attention on AAP contesting the Lok Sabha elections did he get any flack for be-

Like Anna, like Arvind The first time I noticed the power that the Indian media now has to influence public opinion in a significant way was when Anna Hazare was hailed as India's saviour by TV anchors who made him out to be a new mahatma when he came to Jantar Mantar to begin his fast against corruption. They brought their studios to Jantar Mantar and reported his every move. Although Kejriwal was by his side all the time and although he himself fasted for many days afterwards at Jantar Mantar, he was not treated with the same kind of reverence and so he went almost unnoticed except as Anna's constant companion. Kejriwal's own honeymoon with the media began later. Much after he formed his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He tried grabbing headlines on a daily basis by one antic or another but it was only when he exposed the financial dealings and mysterious wealth of Robert Vadra that he became a media star. When he continued to take on people, something that the media rarely dares to do, he became a really big hero and TV reporters took to following him around and slavishly reporting all the things he did and said. When his first foray into electoral politics last December won him the government in

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh traying the people of Delhi. When he went on his tour of Gujarat two weeks ago with the clear intention of maligning Narendra Modi, a huge contingent of TV reporters followed his move. It is possible in the best governed states to find disgruntled people and Kejriwal sought them out assiduously. He announced before TV cameras that the farmers of Gujarat hated Modi and that the only 'development' in the state had benefited billionaires like Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani but somehow the TV reporters who travelled with him did not think it worth asking how Modi could have won three elections if he was so unpopular. It is only in recent days that Kejriwal has started to get bad publicity. It started with his decision to take a private plane from Jaipur to Delhi to attend the India Today conclave. He

tried to explain this away by saying there were no commercial flights that could have brought him here in time but his story was mocked in the media and then before we knew it he announced that if he became prime minister he would throw inconvenient journalists into jail. That comment ended the long honeymoon and as someone who has seen through his antics and his wiles from day one I admit to being very pleased that the honeymoon is over.

Kejriwal not a messiah It is wrong to treat political leaders like messiahs even if they themselves believe they are. Kejriwal has indicated more than once that he is convinced about being a real messiah and not just a politician. Notice the way in which he said he started believing in God because his party had done so well in the Delhi elections. Notice how he talks about himself always in the third person. Notice how he says, ad nauseum, that he is 'nobody' and that whether he wins or loses the credit for victory and the blame for defeat will rest on the shoulders of the 'janata'. Notice how he speaks of himself as someone who has come to rid India of corruption. If these are not signs of megalomania it is hard to think what are. It is the responsibility of political journalists to draw attention to them but this has not happened so far because we have been so mesmerised by Kejriwal. It would not be wrong to say that we helped create the messianic image that Kejriwal has. So if today he is threatening to jail journalists we in the media have only ourselves to blame. Kejriwal is an extremely clever politician who has succeeded in building a political party in a remarkably short time. He has drawn attention to some of the most glaring flaws in Indian political parties and he must be given full credit for this. He has brought hope to millions of urban, middle class Indians who had become cynical about elections and political leaders in general and for this he must be given fullest credit. What he is not is a messiah and it was very wrong of us in the media for having portrayed him as one. Now that he has shown his disdain for the media we must hope that there will be some real political reporting about Kejriwal and his political career.

Resisting evil through peace, harmony and love A

mong the first responses called forth by my book 'What I Believe' were some letters from American Quakers. In these letters, expressing their sympathy with my views on the unlawfulness for a Christian of war and the use of force of any kind, the Quakers gave me details of their own so-called sect, which for more than two hundred years has actually professed the teaching of Christ on non-resistance to evil by force, and does not make use of weapons in self-defence. The Quakers sent me books, from which I learnt how they had, years ago, established beyond doubt the duty for a Christian of fulfilling the command of non-resistance to evil by force, and had exposed the error of the Church's teaching in allowing war and capital punishment. In a whole series of arguments and texts showing that war—that is, the wounding and killing of men—is inconsistent with a religion founded on peace and goodwill toward men, the Quakers maintain and prove that nothing has contributed so much to the obscuring of Christian truth in the eyes of the heathen, and has hindered so much the diffusion of Christianity through the world, as the disregard of this command by men calling themselves Christians, and the permission of war and violence to Christians. "Christ's teaching, which came to be known to men, not by means of violence and

the sword," they say, "but by means of nonresistance to evil, gentleness, meekness, and peaceableness, can only be diffused through the world by the example of peace, harmony, and love among its followers." In addition to what I learned from the Quakers I received about the same time, also from America, some information on the subject from a source perfectly distinct and previously unknown to me. The son of William Lloyd Garrison, the famous champion of the emancipation of the negroes, wrote to me that he had read my thority able to force the Christian to act in op- book, in which he found ideas similar to position to the teaching of God and to the those expressed by his father in the year 1838, principal virtue of the Christian in his relation and that, thinking it would be interesting to with his neighbours." me to know this, he sent me a declaration or "The law of state necessity," they say, "can proclamation of "non-resistance" drawn up force only those to change the law of God by his father nearly 50 years ago. who, for the sake of earthly gains, try to recThis declaration came about under the foloncile the irreconcilable; but for a Christian lowing circumstances: William Lloyd Garrison who sincerely believes that following Christ's took part in a discussion on the means of supteaching will give him salvation, such consid- pressing war in the Society for the Establisherations of state can have no force." ment of Peace among Men, which existed in Further acquaintance with the labours of 1838 in America. Report blames Nehru for India's defeat in 1962 war THE reportedly secret report of 1962 Indo-China war is said to pinpoint and blame the late Jawaharlal Nehru for India's defeat. This report is said to have been 'classified' and hence kept 'secret' all these decades denying the public from knowing the stark truth. Nehru is also said to be responsible for the status of Kashmir as it is today, alien to the Indian citizens. It is also reported that Sardar Patel took the initiative in sending the Army to Hyderabad to neutralise the Nizam who is said to have ordered genocide of the Hindus while Nehru was slow, which would have reflected adversely on Hindus. The brazen factotums of the decrepit Congress should also discuss about the Nizams cruel plans vis-a-vis Nehru's attitude and the Sardar's timely courageous action when they refer to Gujarat's riots in 2002 and blame Modi in spite of him being given a clean chit by SIT. THE report of the Australian journalist Neville Maxwell blaming the late former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for India's defeat in the 1962 Indo-China war after 52 years is rubbish and has no relevance today. It is a clear cut case of betrayal by the Chinese who have backstabbed India after having good friendship with them, as the popularly saying goes: 'Indi-Chini bhai bhai'. ays after the state government proposed to increase the license fee of permit rooms and wine shops, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) in Maharashtra has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court opposing the proposed hike. The Maharashtra Government had in the month of February proposed to hike the license fee of permit rooms and wine shops by as much as 50 per cent. This had

invited heavy criticism from the hospitality industry which had termed the proposal as regressive and a certain death knell for the hotel industry. “Hotels in Maharashtra are one of the most taxed in the world. The industry cannot bear any more burdens. As it is, the hotels pay an aggregate of direct and indirect taxes to the tune of 38 per cent overall, compared to the five to seven per cent taxes in countries like Japan and China. We have now reached the stretch point. If the proposed hike in

n a significant ruling, a divisional bench of the Mumbai High Court has directed the State Govt authorities to take a decision regarding the hand-over of a public amenity space from a construction company to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) within a stipulated time-frame of four weeks, failing which the judiciary will pass appropriate orders on April 22. The civic administration, on the virtue of a general body resolution, had allowed

This space was originally earmarked as open space for developing needed public amenities. Objecting to the illegal tweaking of rules to forgo a prime piece of property at the behest of an influential builder, Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik had sought the intervention of the CM. “It was really absurd that a civic official, during his stint as act-

ing commissioner of the MBMC, took such an important decision which he was not entitled to. Moreover, the said plot is reserved for amenity use and handing it over to the builder on lease without inviting tenders has exposed the corrupt practices involved in the deal,” Sarnaik alleged. After the Urban Development Department failed to take cognizance of the pleas for more than three years, Sena leader Prashant Palande filed a writ petition (4448/2013) in the HC in May last year, seeking immediate

hand over of the land for construction of an auditorium, library and art gallery for locals. “The court has now sought a decision from the State Govt within 4 weeks,” said Palande. It should be noted that due to a colossal delay in acquiring land, the MBMC has already deprived the region of its first 'drama theatre' while other open spaces for public amenities are also under a systematic attack. Moreover, the MBMC has miserably failed to execute its 1997 Development Plan (DP) in the past 15 years.

oft pinks, washed out blues, pale violets, muted yellows, milky greens and nearneutral browns — if any of these colours sound appealing to you, you’re already on board with pastels. For the uninitiated, pastels are soft, soothing versions of all your favourite colours. They don’t pop, blend in with other colours and are the most versatile colours for décor, because you can mix and match them easily with one another. They also remind us of spring, with pretty flowers and Easter coming to mind. Spring has finally arrived, so we’re helping you take the sugary, candy colours a step further than your closet by telling you how to incorporate them into your bedroom.

the adult Bedroom

This wooden chair with a pastel accent from Anemos is a great addition to any bedroom. price `22,500

Bright white: The first trick to making your pastels seem grown-up is to pair them with white. Whether bed sheets, a splash of colour on the wall or just pillow cases, white accents on or around the colour make it look more sophisticated. Choose muted colours: If you think only of green, pink and blue when you think of pastels, you’re not thinking of the right colour schemes. Pastels can brighten up a room even if it’s pretty peaches, soft creams or muted browns. mix & match: The paler the pastel, the easier it is to mix and match them. Putting green, lavender, pink and purple in a line together on your bed (with pillows) or on a dresser (candles perhaps) will look brilliant when it’s all done in pastels. Just a hint: Another way to make sure you don’t look like you stepped out of a CandyLand game is by using very, very little pastel in your room. An ornament, candle or a single pillowcase is a good way to start.

soothing Blues

These blue cushion covers and bed spreads by Goodearth are soothing, yet eyecatching. price On request

go for blue: If your partner is complaining about the pastels, give peach and pink a miss. But, a soft pastel blue combined with some well laid out whites and browns can in fact make your bedroom look manly, satisfying both your décor needs.

green with envy

Choose wood: Complement and accentuate pastels at the same time by choosing to surround them with lightly coloured wood. Too dark and it will look a little mismatched though.

your Children’s room

start small

If you want a small pastel addition, try these curtains by Sanctum. They are speckled with pastel blue and will easily match the rest of your décor. price On request

go for the walls: When it’s a child’s room, you can colour the walls in contrasting pastel shades. Think pink and green, blue and pink or even just combining unlikely, bright colours. It works great in rooms for children as well as teenagers. opt for laminate: Laminate is usually brighter, even if it’s in a pastel colour. So, opting for laminate on your shelves or bed, or even your wall, can make the colours pop. This is great in children’s room.

laminate it Blushing pink

This pastel pink duvet by Tangerine Home Couture is a great way to instantly liven up your bedroom. price `4,699

Colour Coded

The Leo 3-drawers chest by Houseproud.in comes in two pretty pastel shades and is great for your storage needs price `14,000

go wild with patterns: For a kids room, candy stripes, polka dots, textures and prints are a great way to play with pastels. get some prints: If your child is still small enough to want cartoon characters on his/ her bed sheets, you’re in luck. Prints and pastels are a great combination, especially for a children’s room.

muted pastels

These pillow cases by Maisha are in pastel shades of muted colours. price `1,000

go for the floor: This may sound strange, but opting for pastels as floor colour is a great idea. Get a rug or a carpet if you don’t want to change the colour of your tiles.

ducation is important, but sometimes, it isn’t enough. This is something that the NGO, Khel Khel Mein realises. Their initiative aims to provide poor children with an education, as well as teach them human values through the use of recreational programmes and materials such as books, puzzles and toys. Samina Khorakiwala heads this NGO and in our talk with her, she tells us about herself, what led to the creation of Khel Khel Mein (KKM) and how they're changing the lives of children from the slums in Mumbai.

At all 14 KKM centres, we have standardised our learning and recreational resources, employed trained teachers and follow a 10week programme for children who are between five to 12 years. This programme is a value based, edu-creational programme that teaches through fun and play. With toys, puzzles and story books, we teach them good human values. At each centre, they follow the seven human values of love, patience, humility, forgiveness, truth, giving and gratitude.

We do have young volunteers coming forward to help this programme in several ways. Time is the most precious form of commitment that an individual can give for Khel Khel Mein. inding the right lipstick can do a world of good to your overall look. In fact, it is something that either makes or breaks your look altogether. Wearing bright orange lipstick on pale skin can make you look cartoonish and can tear apart your entire look in a matter of seconds. Certain lip colours pair well with certain types of skin tones. Our guide below helps you find out what colours suit your complexion best. We also recommend lipsticks for you to pick up. Take a look...

>> Red Coat (`400) from Lakmé 9to5 range is a good red.

3. pavers england If you're more of a tomboy than a girly girl, picking up these loafer-style mules from Pavers England is a great idea. They are available in a variety of colour combinations, from subtle hues to brighter pinks. price `2,199

3. party ready Continuing with the rule, the slimmer the heel, the more appropriate the mules are for a party or an evening out. So, pick a pair in a satin fabric and stiletto like heel to make sure that they pair well with your dress.

You have fair skin if you have a natural, rosy complexion when you are sans makeup and can get away with minimal or no product to contour your face. You have a natural flush and can go bold with brighter shades of lipstick. Pinks with hints of purple, magenta and fuchsia look nice, as do shades of bright coral. Use the undertones of your skin to choose a colour. Corals and reddish-pinks look nice on those with a yellow undertone, and if you have a cool or blue undertones to your skin, stick to shades that have hints of mauve. The best part about being fair is that you can wear a true red lipstick, without bothering about undertones. Celebrity inspiration: Cate Blanchett >> Use a slick of bright pink lipstick to brighten up your look such as Maybelline's Super Stay 14hr lipstick in Stay with me Coral (`525).

2. Clarks from fashion & you If you want to opt for a casual look, mules with wedges like these from Clarks are a great option. The red and white stripes add a vibrant touch to your look. price `2,299

2. something extra With mules, the golden rule is that if you pick a pair with heels, the chunkier the heel, the more casual the look is. So, picking a neutral colour, with a chunky heel can be paired with anything from shorts and jeans to leggings.

Dark skinned women can get away with a range of colours. Bright pinks, reds and oranges pop without looking too harsh. Stay away from pale pinks and nudes as they make you look chalky. Instead, pick vibrant reds, pinks and caramels. Plum looks great too. For a red, you can either try a warm, orange based one that will brighten up your face or a berry toned red. However, stay away from browns as they make your face look dull rather than brighten it up. Celebrity inspiration: Lupita Nyong'o

1. Charles & keith For a grown-up look, pick up these sophisticated navy blue mules from Charles & Keith. The dark shade will add a little colour to your look while still matching all your outfits. price `6,799

himalaya herbals fairness kesar faCe wash The name itself promises fairness, however that is one area where this face wash fails. It’s not totally ineffective though — it does give you a slightly fairer skin tone that will last for a couple of hours at the most. But, the results aren’t too exciting and the same as what can be achieved by applying a little foundation. At first, I thought that maybe it would take a while for the results to show, but I used to face wash for two consecutive weeks without major and visible results. While its skin brightening ability isn’t so good, it performs the task of cleaning your face really well. The face wash manages to clear away all the oil and leaves your skin feeling fresh, smooth and soft. It also leaves a pleasant sweet fragrance. But though the cleaning ability is good, it is the same as a good face wash and is nothing exceptional. priCe `110 where Retail outlets star rating ***

You are olive-skinned if you have a naturally golden or bronze complexion or simply have olive undertones. You are better off avoiding lighter pinks that may come across as pasty or chalky on your complexion. Nude shades with brown, caramel and even pink undertones look very flattering on this skin tone, as do shades of plum, purple and berry. For a red lip find a shade that is warm. For a bolder red, try shades of wine red. Celebrity inspiration: Eva Longoria

Medium toned women have a warm skin colour and yellow-green or yellow undertones. Women with medium skin tones can wear any shade of pink, from mauve and berry to dusty rose. If you prefer a nude lip, soft brown or caramel shades are a good option. Stay away from red shades that have blue undertones. Instead, pick a true red or a warm red shade. The dress is rather pretty, no? We think the gold butterflies at the border add a nice touch of colour without being overthe-top. The same can't be said about that gaudy belt in the middle though. It's too big and in your face. Her makeup is also bordering on scary.

Sometimes there just isn't enough time to call a designer, so what is a girl to do? Use the curtains of course! The high-neck, busy printed, floor length dress has too much going on. And that school boy's belt and over-the-top hairdo doesn't help one bit.

>> Colorbar's Velvet Matte Lipstick in All Fired Up (`275) is the perfect red for you.

>> Lakmé 9to5 range lipstick in shade Toffee Nexus (`400) is a great brown-nude everyday colour.

>> Pick Faces Go Chic Lipstick in Port wine (`249) for a plum red.

The vibrant blue really makes Nagris look radiant. The high neck and billowy skirt gets evened out with a bit of skin-show thanks to the cut outs. But, what we like the most is the way she's accessorised — simple and not over-the-top. A great look for an evening out.

The salmon colour is lovely and the shoes go well with her outfit. But, come on Amy! You don't own an iron? The dress suits her figure but looks so old and worn out. And like all dresses that have served us well, this one should graduate to house dress now, love.

Sometimes more is just more... as would be the case with this dress. It's demure and lovely, but the length cheapens it. We love the beading and sheer sleeves, but the short hemline has us shaking our heads. A few more inches (and better shoes) would have worked well.

Evaluating your career If you think you’re your own worst critic and best admirer at the same time, self evaluation forms are a piece of cake for you. The rest of us may need a little help getting them right, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

S

o, do you think your team leader, colleagues and boss are being unfair when they give you a slightly lower rating than you would have given yourself during your yearly appraisal? For people who think they can judge themselves best, self appraisal forms are a happy time of year. But, for those of us who dread the extra paperwork and are scared about coming across as insecure, under confident or worse still, pompous and arrogant, self appraisal forms may be the worst part of your job. Thankfully, not all companies will have you fill them out. For those that do, here’s a quick rundown on how to get them right.

>> No need to get worried and confused when HR hands you your self-appraisal form; our pointers will help you out

Why am I appraIsIng myself? Self appraisal forms are not only a good way to let people see how hard you’ve been working, how far you’ve come and how driven you are for the future, they are also beneficial to the company. So, it’s not completely selfless of them to make you fill them out and they’re doing it for more reasons than simply giving you a shot at a raise. The fact that participation is active and collective from the entire office makes appraisals fairer and gives your employers a chance to get to know you. In larger companies, these forms help managers understand their employees better and also give the higher ups an insight into the difference of opinion between colleagues in a team. This helps them create teams that work more efficiently by putting likeminded people together and tweaking things for optimum performance.

gettIng the form rIght While you don’t want to sell yourself short, sounding like you know everything and are amazing at everything is the wrong way to go about filling up these forms. After all, everyone has their shortcomings and accepting them is important. Here are a few tips to filling in the form to the best of your abilities: l The first thing you should do is talk about the job you’re doing. Don’t make it seem as if you’re the best worker they

We tell you hoW to handle the neW boss blues I have made a lateral switch into a new organisation and while my new team is supportive and filled with good workers, I keep feeling that there is a chasm between them and me. The work is fine; I haven't faced any problems, but I like to think of myself as a friendly, hands-on boss and that's something that I haven't been feeling. Can you please tell me what I can do? — aakansha modi, mahim dear aakansha, My first guess is that you're probably too new at the job for you and your team to be comfortable with each other. Lateral movements are always a bit tough because you're not only working with new people,

have; just talk about your career, where you started off, where you are now and your job in relation to where you plan to be in a few years. The bigger picture is always a good way to go. l Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback in your form itself. Although companies are supposed to have a face-to-face meeting after these forms are submitted, most do it as a formality and so, you might miss out on discussing important factors. Say that you are willing to learn, grow or change and make it seem like your utmost priority is to be the best that you can be at your job. You can even ask for specific training if you think you need it, but don’t make it sound that you are lacking or like the company owes you that. l It doesn’t matter whether you’re unsatisfied with the work you’ve done. Don’t be a downer on your form! Be positive, even when you’re talking about areas you have failed in. Don’t blame people (whether it’s yourself or your colleagues) and don’t complain about responsibilities that have been given to you. Remember that passing the buck and making excuses are terrible traits in an employee. l Although you should be positive, don’t pile on the laurels. Don’t be afraid to talk about the areas in your career/ work that need improvement and focus on saying that you recognise your weak points (which is often half the battle won) and wish to improve upon them. l When you’re talking about all that you’ve achieved, don’t be vague. Pinpoint things specifically so that it’s clear how much you’ve grown from the get-go. l Be concise and professional. No one wants to read an essay about your life! l Be proud of the job you have. Employers can smell dissent a mile away, so if you make it seem like you’re unhappy and resentful, they’re going to pick up on it and wonder why, especially if you haven’t mentioned it. And if you do need to mention it, don’t make it seem like you’re the victim of too much work. The less special you make yourself seem, the more impressed they will be. The most important thing here is to be honest.

you're leading them. My suggestion that is not to worry too much (especially considering your work is turning out fine), and give it some time. At the same time there are a couple of things you can do — take them out for drinks or coffee after work to break the ice. Also ensure that in your nervousness you aren't coming across as unapproachable. But, do keep in mind that you don't try too hard, not only because you'll seem weird and overfriendly, but also to ensure that your position as a boss remains sacrosanct. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

here are a number of reasons why we love Sheryl Sandberg’s (businesswoman and chief operating officer of Facebook) BanBossy campaign; but we think that the opening lines of the website say it perfectly: “When a little boy asserts himself, he’s called a “leader.” Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded “bossy.” Words like bossy send a message: don’t raise your hand or speak up. By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys — a trend that continues into adulthood. Together we can encourage girls to lead.” The campaign has received its fair share of acclaim and brickbats. But, if you were nodding vigorously while reading the statement, you should log on to the website and take their pledge to ban the word ‘bossy’. The best part about the website is that it is involves more than clicking on a Like or Retweet button. The website has some great stories about women (and even young girls) and how they’ve tried to challenge gender stereotypes. Apart from that they also feature leadership tips for women in different fields and suggestions on how you can initiate the gender debate among your family and friends. Where www.banbossy.com

Emotional crEaturEs Filled with monologues, song-and-dance routines and a stellar cast of really powerful women actors, Eva Ensler’s latest play, Emotional Creatures, has been directed by Mahabanoo ModyKotwal and Kaizad Kotwal. Neha Shende tells you what she thinks of the production >> The Mumbai cast of the acclaimed Eve Ensler play

Turn your disappointment around as Glynda Alves brings you easy substitutes for your most common baking dilemmas sour cream When a recipe (usually cheesecake) requires you to use sour cream, you can find yourself in a fix. And even if you do manage to source it, the price can turn things even more sour. The best alternative would be to use yogurt. However, do not use it as it is. Strain it through a muslin cloth to get rid of as much excess liquid as possible. Adjust the other ingredients so that the slightly more fluid consistency gets balanced out. >> Use yogurt instead of sour cream when making cheesecake

irected by Mahabanoo ModyKotwal and Kaizaad Kotwal and produced by A Poor-Box Production, this flamboyant play, written in 2010 by Vagina Monologues writer Eve Ensler, made its debut on the Mumbai stage at NCPA last Saturday, 15th March. The play is a patchwork of several monologues, slide shows and song-anddance sequences. In these monologues, young women from all over the world talk of the problems they face every day, simply because they are women, and the extraordinary way in which they show resilience and stay strong through tough times. Says Mody-Kotwal, “In India, we always hear of the atrocities against Indian women. But women the world over are going through similar problems and this is never reported in our country. A need to show this to the Indian audience got me interested in the play.” The play begins with the entire cast asking questions in a sort of collective rhythm that grows into a crescendo of one voice asking the question — How to be a girl in this world? The play is episodic and almost Brechtian in nature, in that it makes generous use of slides and colourful lighting, along with songs that give the viewers a break from the intensity of the monologues to think on what the women are saying. None of the cast have one fixed role; they change from one monologue to the next, like they are opening a window into the worlds of these women. Sex trafficking, rape, slavery, child labour, objectification of women — these

are the issues the play talks about. In one monologue, a girl from Congo talks of how she was kidnapped and kept against her will by a soldier for two years and raped over and over until she could finally escape. She gives us eight rules that every girl should stick by to stay strong in such a situation. This powerful act ended in rule

>> Swati Das during her performance

no.8, that said “Do not feel guilty about how happy you feel when you hear he is dead.” Another powerful act came in the monologue of the 13-year-old girl from

China who is forced to work in a doll making factory. Her innocent talk reveals to us her likeness to the plastic dolls she helps make. She longs to be free but is unable to do anything about it, exactly like the immobile Barbie doll abused by its owners. The innocence of the child and her hidden longing for freedom was brought out very well by the actor. These monologues may sometimes leave us sad and angry but the girls narrate their problems with defiance and a will to survive that is infectious. Two such gritty performances were put up by the two youngest cast members, 14-year-old school girls Zaara and Deena. “When I saw that in my monologue I ask my boyfriend to wear a condom, I was apprehensive, I had never done something like that on stage before,” says Zaara, “But our directors explained the importance of sending out the social message on these taboo subjects and we understood,” Deena interjects. Deena did a monologue on a girl from Tehran who is forced to get a nose job to make her look beautiful. The play sometimes overdoes itself with its in-your-face acting and loud feminism and you hear uncomfortable mutters from the older audience during some of the more explicit scenes. Sometimes during an act like ‘Hunger Blog,’ where the young girl suffers from anorexia feels trivial compared to greater horrors like clitoridectomy and rape that other women suffer. In the end though, the play succeeds in what it set out to do — force us to think and question our patriarchal society that makes this emotional creature submit.

This sugar is much more moist as compared to other sugars. This is why it's used in cakes and desserts — to add flavour as well as a rich, moist texture. Sadly, this is not easy to source in Mumbai. Your best alternative would be to use Demerara sugar plus a tablespoon of molasses for each 100g of muscovado sugar you need.

molasses Got annoyed when we suggested using molasses in our previous point? Yes, we know that's not easily available too, so here's a replacement for it. Honey! This sticky substance is an ideal substitute because it has a similar taste and consistency. Use raw honey if possible and expect the cake to turn out a little lighter than what it would look like if it contained molasses.

cream of tartar You often just need a dash of this ingredient for a recipe but lack of it can ruin your baking! When the recipe calls for cream of tartar while beating egg whites, add the equal amount of white vinegar. While baking cookies, replace the baking soda and the cream of tartar in the recipe with baking powder. One teaspoon of baking powder replaces 1/3 tsp of baking soda and 2/3 tsp cream of tartar. If required in icing, you can omit it all together.

golden syrup This syrup is available but it's quite hard to find if you don't know where to look. Try gourmet food stores or shops that specialise in baking. But, if you need a substitute, honey comes to the rescue again. You can also try using jaggery (pop it in the microwave to melt it) though the flavour might vary.

I have been seeing Meena for about two months and she is the most fantastic woman in the world! She is funny, cool, smart, has a great personality and is gorgeous to boot. I am really close to falling for her, hook, line and sinker. Meena... my Meena! Ah, there is no one in the world like you!

Uh... Paresh... Uh... there is something I have to tell you.

She sounded serious. I grew afraid... all sorts of things ran through my mind. She thought I stank, hated me, wanted out.

There are some things you shouldn’t tolerate in a relationship, no matter how much you love your partner. Shirley Mistry lists the top offenders

But, it was nothing like that. What she said did come as a big shock to me nevertheless. Actually Paresh, you’re wrong. I should have told you sooner. You see...

friends and family, consider the alarm bells ringing. If he loves you, he will willingly accept your relationship with your friends and family and not try to separate you from them. Instead, he'll try to get to know them better too.

here are some things in a relationship that you should just not tolerate. We don't suggest you pack your bags and run at the smallest argument, but it is important to consider ending the relationship if you spot any of the following things happening.

finances, making investments or excessively spending your money without your permission or against your will, your partner is seriously crossing the line and you need to reconsider if you want to be in this relationship. You should have complete control over your hard-earned money.

Violence

Verbal aggression

Of all the things you shouldn't tolerate, this one tops the list. No kind of violence is acceptable. No matter how extreme the fight, situation or argument, if your partner can't talk it out and has to resort to violence, you are better off without him. Don't dismiss it as a spur of the moment reaction, a reflex or something only done in anger. Nothing can ever be enough to justify violent behaviour.

Your partner doesn't need to hit you to be aggressive or violent. Verbal aggression is equally unacceptable. Swearing or shouting at you, humiliating or belittling you are signs of verbal aggression. Putting up with such behaviour is equivalent do dating a bully — someone who considers you beneath him.

He said he was at the gym but it later slipped out that he was actually visiting his friends instead. If you find that incidents like this one are happening all too frequently, it is a cause of concern. Trust is the most important thing in any relationship and if your partner is going to lie to you about the smallest of things, honestly, you do know the sheer number and kinds of things he's hiding from you.

inVading your priVacy

cheating

It is one thing if you ask your partner to read out a mail to you if you have your hands full, but him snooping around or wanting continuous access to your email, social media and cell phone is not right. Unless you want to willingly share this information with your partner, he has no business prying into every conversation you have ever had. Also, if you find that your boyfriend or husband is trying to keep away from certain

If your partner has cheated on you, there is no reason to forgive him and try to patch things up. If your partner truly loves you, there is no reason from him to cheat. Also, how can you ever completely trust a man who has cheated on you. By giving him a second chance, you are sending out a signal that his behaviour is acceptable and nothing is stopping him from cheating again.

Meddling with your personal finances While it is a good idea to have a second opinion on your finances and what investments you choose to make, it is unacceptable for your partner to exert a right over your finances unless you want their involvement. The longer you are in a relationship, the more involved you are bound to get in each other's life. But, if you find your partner managing your

I am 24 years old and am soon getting married. What does a newly married girl expect from her husband on the first night? What are the needs of a girl during sex? How should I approach her for sex? Is it okay to do so on the first night? First of all, a lot depends on whether it is a love marriage or an arranged marriage. If it is a love marriage then I would presume that a meeting of the minds, sharing of feelings, hopes and dreams, and some level of intimacy would already have taken place. You would have already understood each other to a certain degree and bonded with each other, which is the foundation of physical intimacy. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (March 20, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (March 19, 2014) a net 7.40 points (0.11%) and closed at the 6524 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6530 points level. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6506 points level at 9.39 a.m. The index then bounced back into the green, rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6541 points level at 10.59 a.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a narrow range of 35 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 33 were gainers, while 17 were losers. Substantial buying was seen in metal and FMCG stocks, while substantial selling was seen in IT, technology and PSU stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 0.18%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 754 were gainers, 737 were losers and 76 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is at the slow D line (neutral). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Support (1) = 6506. Support (2) = 6489. Resistance (1) = 6542. Resistance (2) = 6559. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: The market seems to be consolidating at current levels. On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages, and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6510) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6406) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6283) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6008) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

We attended the TCS analyst meet and key takeaways are: (1) Expect Q4 to be softer than Q3 in CC terms; (2) Growth to be led by Europe and Latam, India to decline; (3) Stronger outlook for FY15 over FY14 maintained; and (4) Margins to drop 40-50bps QoQ due to investments. Overall, the near-term commentary was soft but management retains its positive discretionary spend-led FY15 outlook. We think predictable growth with strong execution should help sustain TCS’s valuation premium (19x FY15E P/E) to the sector. BUY. Q4 softer than Q3: Management indicated that Q4 is likely to be softer than Q3 on a CC basis. Geographically, the US and UK are expected to grow at the company average, while growth in Europe should remain strong. India is expected to decline, though not as much as in Q3. Overall, we believe Q4 CC growth rates should come in at ~3% QoQ. Maintains FY15>FY14 demand outlook: Management maintained its stronger outlook for FY15 on a recovery in discretionary spends. While TCS has seen a relatively soft performance in H2FY14, we think a supportive US macro and offshoring in Europe should drive growth. Margins soft due to investments: Operationally, management expects to be able to keep margins steady, though investments could shave 40-50bps off margins in Q4. Other income FX gains are expected to be flat QoQ with no material movement in FX. Valuations and View: We note that valuations, though at a premium to the sector, have moderated to 19x FY15E earnings. We think predictable growth and the ability to navigate margins will support TCS’s premium over the sector. An improvement in demand outlook and continued execution would be the key stock triggers. Maintain BUY with a TP of Rs 2,450.

Motilal Oswal calls a ‘Buy’ on Maruti Suzuki CMP: Rs. 1871

Target Rs. 2450

MSIL reviewed terms of proposed Suzuki Gujarat plant (SG), to fully address concerns raised by the investors. Further, it is voluntarily seeking minority shareholders’ approval for this arrangement. Post these revisions, we believe focus would return to the fundamentals, which are clearly stabilizing and showing initial signs of improvement with increase in footfalls/ enquiries. MSIL is a clean play on economic recovery in India. Post this clarification, we are reverting valuations for TP to 10x FY16 Cash EPS (implied ~16x FY16 EPS), which we had discounted by 20% due to ambiguity surrounding Gujarat plant. Maintain Buy with TP of ~INR2,500 (16x FY16 EPS or 10x Cash EPS). We rate MSIL as our top-pick in the auto sector. As per revised terms, entire capex would be funded by depreciation and equity contribution by Suzuki Motor (Parent), indicating there wouldn’t be any profit retention by SG. Earlier capex funding was also from profit margins for car sold from SG. Effectively, pricing of cars from SG would be at actual cost + depreciation (v/s earlier pricing = cost + depreciation + margins). The impact of any direct or indirect taxes on account of the contract manufacturing agreement would be assessed before finalizing the agreement. It reiterated that SG would function on basis that it would neither generate surpluses nor make losses. As per revised terms, since pricing of cars sold by SG would be cost + depreciation, it would be breaking even at PBT level. However, there might be temporary cash accumulation (on account of depreciation) as capex cash outflow wouldn’t match with depreciation. We believe these revisions should clarify any doubts about intentions of the parent, and makes us believe that Suzuki would be solely interested in derisking its Indian manufacturing operations after its experience of Manesar industrial unrest. Our preliminary calculation suggests that this arrangement could add ~INR340/share of NPV due to capex savings (ex depn). We will re-evaluate as we deal get formalized and further clarity emerges. Valuation & view: We believe MSIL has addressed two major investor concerns on the Gujarat plant: Funding for additional capex: The additional capex will be funded only by a combination of depreciation and equity infusion by Suzuki, with no mark-up on car sold to MSIL. Gujarat plant ownership: In the event of non-renewal of the manufacturing arrangement, the assets of the Gujarat subsidiary would be transferred to MSIL at book value (v/s a fair value based on independent valuation). We believe the Gujarat facility arrangement through Suzuki’s 100% subsidiary is beneficial for MSIL, improving overall profits (with treasury income) and return ratios. Also, accumulated cash can be invested by MSIL to fortify its marketing network and strengthening its R&D. This clarification also makes clear that Suzuki’s intention is not to profit from this investment directly but through MSIL, given its 56% stake. The impact of the Gujarat facility on MSIL’s financials would be seen only in FY17. Our preliminary estimates indicate NPV of ~INR340/sh (~19% of CMP) for benefits of this deal accruing to MSIL. The stock trades at 14.9x/11.2x FY15E/16E consolidated EPS of INR116.9/INR155.1.

Will improve their credit profiles, says S&P

By A Business Reporter

M

ore Indian companies are improving their high financial leverage and boosting their credit profiles by adopting measures such as sale of equity and assets or using their free operating cash flows to reduce debt... The size of the measures taken and our expectation of the impact on a company's financial ratios will determine the improvement on the company's credit profile.” , said Standard & Poor's Ratings Servicesin a report released yesterday. "Besides raising equity and selling non-core assets, Indian companies are also divesting stakes in businesses," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Mehul Sukkawala. "In our view, the companies' main reasons for improving their financial profiles are the weak economy and high interest rates in India, which have adversely affected cash flows and debt-servicing ability. Another reason is companies are refocusing on reducing debt after years of investing significantly on rapid growth."

Standard & Poor's recently revised the outlook on its 'B+' rating on Tata Power Co. Ltd. to positive and raised the rating on Bharti Airtel Ltd. to 'BBB-' after both Indian companies started focusing on lowering debt, in addition to benefiting from favorable regulatory developments. Tata Power announced a rights issue of Indian rupees (INR) 20 billion and a stake sale in a coal mine amounting to about US$500 million. Bharti Airtel also raised US$1.25 billion through equity offering last year and we believe the company would continue to take measures such as sale of stakes in subsidiaries (such as Bharti Infratel Ltd.) or non-core assets (such as tower infrastructure). Tata Steel Ltd. has also taken steps to reduce its leverage. The company sold part of its investment in Titan Industries Ltd. shares in 2013. Tata Steel has put its Borivali land up for sale and we believe the company would take further steps to reduce leverage. The company has also deferred phase 2 of its Orissa greenfield project; we view this to be positive for free cash flow

generation after the completion of phase 1, which Tata Steel expects by March 2015. Many companies in the infrastructure sector with very high leverage are also considering selling assets or stakes in subsidiaries to improve their debt-servicing ability, financial flexibility, and liquidity. For example, GMR Infrastructure Ltd. has sold two of its road projects in 2014 and signed an agreement to sell its 40% stake in the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport. We believe this would enable the company, and others like it, to withstand the current weak economic environment and position well for future opportunities. Standard & Poor's also expects companies to reduce debt through positive free operating cash flows. This is because many Indian companies have significantly reduced capital expenditures and expansion plans in the current economic environment. This is especially the case for sectors that typically use high capital expenditures, such as power, metals and mining, and infrastructure.

Financial Viability Of Highway Projects Strained By A Business Reporter

A

n analysis of national highway projects by CRISIL Research, shows a significant slowdown in traffic growth over the past couple of years. In addition, base traffic (in the first year of operations) on many highways has been well below estimates made by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Add cost overruns, and what you get is severely strained financial viability of highway projects. CRISIL Research’s analysis of 15

national highway stretches shows traffic growth, in PCU (passenger car unit) terms, slowed to about 3-4 % in fiscal 2012 and 2-3 % in 2013, compared with 7-8 % in between fiscals 2007 and 2011. "This is primarily because commercial vehicles traffic, which account for over three-fourths of total traffic, hardbraked, growing at just 2-3 % in fiscal 2012 and by one % in 2013. On the other hand, passenger vehicle traffic grew a healthy 15 % in the two years. It estimates that overall traffic

Investments Increase In Logistics Sector By A Business Reporter

I

BUSINESS

nvestment inflows to the logistics sector improved, following India’s economic impetus in the second half of 2013. At the same time, however, rental values remained under pressure across certain industrial markets, according to CBRE’s latest report, India Logistics Market View – H2 2013. Demand for logistics and warehousing space was largely driven by the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and third party logistics (3PLs) sectors; while engineering and manufacturing firms adopted a wait-and-watch approach. Leasing and transaction activity declined across most warehousing micromarkets during the second half of 2013. Due to weak leasing sentiments, rental values either remained stable or witnessed a

marginal decline across markets. The Northern Corridor of Hyderabad, Bhiwandi near Mumbai, the Southern Corridor of Bangalore, and the Northern Industrial Belt of Chennai were some of the preferred micro-markets among FMCG firms in 2013. Kolkata also witnessed small-to-medium sized transactions along the NH-2 (Grand Trunk Road) and NH-6 stretches, primarily from 3PLs and manufacturing firms. Commenting on the findings of the report, Anshuman Magazine, Chairman and Managing Director, CBRE South Asia said, “The general economic slowdown and weak consumer sentiments also impacted the logistics and warehousing sector. Leasing remained low; and the size of space take-up was limited too, since very few large-sized transactions were recorded during 2H 2013. ”

growth has remained weak in the current fiscal (2014) and will continue to languish around 3-5 % over the next 12 months. Typically, a 100 bps drop in traffic growth over the concession period can result in a 75-100 bps decline in project returns," says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director - Industry and Customised Research, CRISIL Research. But traffic growth is not the only problem for developers. In the case of 6 national highway stretches that were studied, base traffic has been lower by a significant 20 to 40 % compared with NHAI estimates. To be sure, developers would have conducted their own traffic studies, but the significant deviation from NHAI estimates indicates the potential adverse impact on project returns. Things turn grimmer because the 6 projects are significantly delayed and are seeing an average cost overrun of about 23 %. The delays are largely due to land acquisition and clearance issues. "Clearly the calculations of many road developers have gone awry. Our analysis shows 5 out of 6 projects have an average debt service coverage ratio (DSCR) of less than one in the first 5 years of operations. This means, if there is no additional capital infusion, developers will find it difficult to service loans. Also, project returns today are in the 8-14 % range – less than half the 22-26 % arrived at based on NHAI’s traffic and cost estimates," said Rahul Prithiani, Director - Industry Research, CRISIL.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Gujarat Tops In Economic Freedom

Giving a thumbs up to BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi ahead of the general elections, a report said Gujarat tops the list of states in terms of economic freedom, improving its position from the 5th place in 2005. "Gujarat is not only the freest state, but it has also registered the fastest rate of improvement (from 0.46 to 0.65). The second fastest improver is Andhra Pradesh (from 0.40 to 0.50)," said the report on Economic Freedom of the States of India (EFSI)- 2013. The report, jointly authored by economists Ashok Gulati, Bibek Debroy, Laveesh Bhandari and journalist Swaminathan Aiyar, is based on an index which takes into account parameters like size of the government, legal structure and security of property rights and regulation of business and labour.

Sebi Wants PSBs As 'Public' Shareholders In SEs

The issue is likely to be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of Sebi's board, which would also be apprised of the impact of the Finance Ministry's decision for not agreeing to such a proposal from the capital markets regulator, sources said.

Govt Asks NTPC For Rs 233 Cr Bank Guarantee

The government has ordered power major NTPC to furnish a Rs 233 crore bank guarantee to expedite development of a coal block in Chhattisgarh and said failure to submit the surety may result in cancellation of the mine. The Talaipalli block in Mand Raigarh region of the state was allocated to the staterun electricity producer in January 2006 to supply coal to the 4,000 MW Lara Super Thermal Power Project. NTPC has spent Rs 1,464.5 crore on the project, including Rs 325 crore on development of the mine.

India's Domestic Demand May Witness A Recovery

India's domestic demand is likely to recover from the sharp slowdown it experienced over the course of 2013, largely driven by the growing population and nascent middle-class, an HSBC report says. According to global financial services major, despite its recent slowdown, India's economic promise remains substantial, with the growing population and nascent domestic middle class generating a growing market for consumption goods. "India's growing population and nascent middle-class will generate substantial demand for consumer goods from abroad," HSBC said.

Assets With Portfolio Managers Rise To `7.52 Lakh Cr In Feb

Assets under management (AUM) of portfolio managers have risen to Rs 7.52 lakh crore in February, as per Sebi data. Assets under management of portfolio managers have gone up from 7,32,970 crore in January to Rs 7,52,775 crore at the end of February, according to the latest data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). They had touched a record level of Rs 9,58,121 crore in August, 2013. The total AUM has nearly doubled since the data was first released by Sebi in December, 2010. In February, portfolio managers individually handled assets worth Rs 5.75 lakh crore for discretionary services, Rs 1.38 lakh crore for advisory services and another Rs 39,277 crore for non-discretionary investments.

Shipping Min May Seek Funding Support For 2 Major Ports

The Shipping Ministry may seek funding support for two major ports to attract more developers and is likely to approach the Cabinet on the issue. The government has finalised Sagar (West Bengal) and Dugarajapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) as two sites for setting up of the ports. "At the Sagar port there is also a proposal to build a rail bridge which means that the rate of return for that port will about 8%. So without VGF (viability gap funding), participation of bidders is an issue," a Shipping Ministry official told PTI.

RETURN TO THE BLUE LAGOON

While the general theme of this film resembles “The Blue Lagoon” (the film for which this is a sequel), the basic plot is quite different. We open the film with a ship finding the craft with our original characters in it, Richard and Emmeline dead and Paddy alive. Taken in by Sarah, a widow with an infant baby girl Lilli, Richard (Paddy) is cared for in a return to civilization. Struck by cholera, the crew of the ship start to die and the captain sets Sarah, Richard, Lilli and a healthy crew member on a lifeboat in an attempt to preserve their lives. With water and food running short, the crew member escorting Sarah and the children becomes dangerous, so Sarah takes the only course of action she feels suitable to preserve the children: she strikes him and throws him overboard. Taking control of the small craft, she eventually guides them back to the island of... Pi x, 9 p.m.

IRPUR: India defeated England by 20 runs in their second and final warm-up game at the ICC World T20 here today. Sent into bat, India scored 178/4 and then restricted England to 158/6 in 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers claiming two wickets for 23 in his four-over spell even as newcomer Moeen Ali with fine knock of 46 and Michael Lumb with 36 tried to breathe life into the English effort. Earlier Virat Kohli hit a smashing 74 and was ably complemented by Suresh Raina as India overcame early jitters to post a commendable total. Raina smashed his way to a 31ball-54 while Kohli was unbeaten on 74 off 48 balls as the duo added 81 runs in 8.5 overs after England left the 2007 champions tottering at 39 for three in the first six overs. The turnaround happened when Kohli and Raina suddenly took off in the 13th over bowled by left-arm

The final over bowled by Tim Bresnan produced 17 runs with Kohli hitting him for three crisp boundaries. He hit eight in all. Put into bat, Rohit Sharma (5) was out mistiming a pull shot as a delivery from Dernbach kept climbing on him and the skier was taken at deep fine leg boundary by Alex Hales. Shikhar Dhawan (14) bisected the off-side field twice before a powerful drive hit uppishly was taken by James Tredwell diving to his right in the cover region. M

IRPUR: England off-spinner James Tredwell today said that it is helpful if the tweakers have a “little bit of kink” while bowling the doosra, which has been one of the most talked-about deliveries in cricket over time. Many experts like former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi have openly questioned the legality of the doosra, maintaining that it can’t be bowled without bent arm or what is known as a ‘kink’. Now a current off-break bowler has said that “kink” is needed to bowl the wrong’un as the flexibility limit is only 15 degrees.

YLHET (BANGLADESH): Zimbabwe kept themselves in contention for a spot in the main draw of the ICC World Twenty20 Championships, beating Netherlands by five wickets in a Group B qualifying match here today. Chasing 141, the Zimbabweans overcame some hiccups to reach 146 for five in 20 overs to stay afloat in the competition after losing their opening match.Hamilton Masakadza (43 off 45 balls) and man of the match skipper Brendan Taylor (49 off 39 balls) were the stars of the chase after fall of wickets in quick succession caused some anxiety in the Zimbabwean camp. For the Netherlands Pieter Seelaar picked two for nine in his fantastic two overs.

Earlier, after electing bat first, the Netherlands top-order crumbled spectacularly before Tom Cooper’s 58-ball 72 took them to a respectable total. The Dutch were reeling at 35 for four before Cooper came to their rescue, helped by some decent contributions from the lower-half of the line-up. Tom Cooper combined with his brother Ben (20) to put together 52 runs for the fifth wicket which steadied the team’s innings. After Ben was dismissed by Natsai Mushangwe, holing out to Tinashe Panyangara, Tom found another steady partner in Mudassar Bukhari (14 not out). Both batsmen remained unbeaten with Tom striking nine fours and a six in his impressive knock.

IRPUR: West Indies’ bowling mainstay Sunil Narine says that there is no variation called “teesra” like what Saeed Ajmal is believed to deliver and it is only about playing “mindgames” with the opposition batsmen. Asked whether there is a possibility of a “teesra” apart from traditional off-break and the “doosra” (wrong’un) that goes the other way, he gave a straight-forward answer. “It’s probably playing mindgames with the batsmen. Batsmen nowadays can do a lot of things as the game revolves around them. There is very little that bowlers can do, so might just play mindgames,” Narine said during an interaction ahead of ICC World T20 campaign here. As an extension to that answer, he

agreed that trends are changing in T20 and bowlers have their task cut out. “Bowlers are trying out something new everyday. But you might not know what might just come out and what might not work,” he added. The 25-year-old Narine, who is one of the most sought- after bowlers in T20 cricket with a brilliant career economy rate of under six (5.43) across 107 T20 matches (domestic + International), said that he would like to concentrate on his strengths. Will there be any surprise delivery, pat came the reply, “No surprises. I am trying to keep it as simple as possible. What I have been doing for the last two to three years, I will be doing just that.” Narine has been instrumental in Kolkata Knight Riders’ maiden Indian Premier League triumph during its fifth edition in 2012.

IPL is not for making a personal comeback, says Gambhir N

EW DELHI: Determined to fight his way back into the national side, Gautam Gambhir today said he would be happy grinding it out in the domestic circuit for long rather than using the Indian Premier League as a “platform” to make a “personal comeback”.Once considered as Indian batting’s mainstay, Gambhir now finds himself in cricketing wilderness owing to his indifferent form, but the out-of-favour opener has not lost hopes of returning to international cricket and would be happily plying his trade in the Deodhar Trophy for North Zone and Kolkata Knights Riders in the IPL. I will never use the IPL (as a platform). I will use the IPL as a platform to do well for my side KKR. What all matters to me is good showing for KKR. I don’t play the IPL for my personal comebacks. I play IPL for my team and do well for them. Performing for KKR is all that is in back of my mind,” Gambhir told PTI.

“It’s (domestic cricket) the stepping stone for making it to the Indian team. Till the time love for the game is there, I don’t mind playing at any platform, be it domestic, IPL or the international cricket. I love the game and that’s what really matters to me,” Gambhir said on the sidelines of a Red Bull event, Wings

For Life, to spread the message of World run that aims to raise funds for spinal cord research, in the capital. It’s been more than a year since Gambhir last took guard in international game against England at Dharamsala in January 2013. Talking about Test cricket and T20s, it’s been around 15 months for the southpaw. The 31-year-old scored 578 runs in the Ranji Trophy this season with a top score of 153 against Haryana but failed to make the cut for the Test squad to South Africa. He got unlucky for the second time too, missing out on a Test spot for the New Zealand tour despite other opener Shikhar Dhawan’s poor outing with the bat in South Africa. Gambhir again failed to win the hearts of national selectors when they ignored him for India’s limitedovers campaign in the Asia Cup, where the team even failed to qualify for the final. With India touring England in June followed by the 50over World Cup in Australia-New

Zealand, Gambhir still has opportunities to knock on the doors of national selectors. But, at the moment, Gambhir is focusing on the domestic tournaments.”Look, I don’t predict what’s there in future for me. I am looking that far (England tour and World Cup). It’s a long time to go. The reality is that I have to play the Deodhar Trophy and the the IPL,” he said. Gambhir also refused to set any time frame like Virender Sehwag before thinking about quitting the game. Sehwag had said that he still has 2-3 years of competitive cricket left in him before taking a decision on retirement.”I don’t know. I have not thought about it. I don’t look at for how long I am going to play. The day I feel like I can’t contribute to the team’s success, that’s the day I am going to call it quits,” he said.”The only thing on the back of my mind is to do well in Deodhar Trophy and IPL. If I am able to make a comeback, I’ll definitely give my 100 per cent,” he added.

“I tried to bowl a genuine doosra and lost my wrist position. It helps if you have a little bit of kink as it helps generate enough pace but we have only 15 degrees to work with. That’s probably where I have struggled. My action is quite pure and I could not generate enough pace on the one that turns the other way,” Tredwell said during an Open Session of the England team. “I probably went over the top with it at one point and it started affecting my off-breaks. So I have to be careful with it depending on my stock ball,” Tredwell said. But the 32-year-old, who has played 30 ODIs, 11 T20 Internationals and a Test for England, however, is not judgmental as to whether it is ethical or not to bowl it. “Certainly there should be permissible limits. I think if someone can bowl a doosra, the coaches should encourage if someone has a different technique. You don’t need to stop because it is something that the old-school doesn’t believe in,” he said. Has he ever spoken to Sunil Narine about the finer points of bowling a doosra, Tredwell said, “I did speak to Narine in West Indies. It’s always nice to pick up finer points from great bowlers but at the end of the day, it depends on what your strengths are.” Narine, on his part, evaded the question as to whether it is legal to bowl a doosra or not.

IN BRIEF Vijender’s u-turn, open to support any faction

NEW DELHI: Boxer Vijender Singh today made a u-turn from his stance that he is backing the former IABF secretary-general P K Muralidharan Raja-led faction, saying that whichever group gets the national boxing body’s suspension lifted by the AIBA will receive his support. “I am with every faction. I am supporting Raja, Abhay Singh Chautala (former IABF president) or for that matter Ashok Matoria (present IABF president). I am supporting every group. I am a boxer and my job is boxing. I am not a politician that I would be supporting this group or that group. Whichever faction will help in taking the Indian boxing forward, I am with that group,” Vijender told reporters here. Indian Amateur Boxing Federation’s (IABF) suspension has rendered the country’s boxers ineligible to compete in any international event. Furious with the current logjam in the IABF, the International Boxing Association had terminated the body from its fold stating that the current set of officebearers are “damaging the image, reputation and interest” of the sport. The rebel faction, led by Brigadier (Retd) Raja and West Bengal Boxing Association chief Asit Banerjee in the terminated IABF, had claimed that Olympic and World Championships bronze-medallist Vijender had agreed to be on the athletes commission.

from back surgery and is preparing to defend his Miami title. Murray was already one of the most talented players of his generation but it was only when working with Lendl, who like the Scot lost his initial Grand Slam finals, that he became a major winner. Their first significant joint triumph was at the London Olympics before Murray, with

eight-time major winner Lendl in his corner, emerging triumphant in the 2012 US Open — his first Grand Slam title. But even that success was topped by Murray’s victory over Novak Djokovic in last year’s Wimbledon final, a win that saw him become the first British player since Fred Perry 77 years earlier to win the men’s singles title.

"It's too early to know about the Masters and I will continue to be evaluated and work closely with my doctors," Woods said on his website. ARIS: Chelsea eased into the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Galatasaray on Tuesday, while Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid completed a comprehensive win against Schalke 04. First-half goals from Samuel Eto'o and Gary Cahill gave Chelsea a 2-0 victory as they saw off their Turkish opponents 3-1 on aggregate to succeed where fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester City failed and make it into the last eight. Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid defeated Schalke 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to advance 9-2 on aggregate and extend their long unbeaten run to 31 games. "Last season when Chelsea won the Europa League it was a different level," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "Now we are amongst the last eight in the Champions League,

the best teams in the world. That is important for the club. The players deserve to be there." The build-up to the game at Stamford Bridge had been dominated by the return of Didier Drogba to the ground where he is still hailed as a hero and the Ivorian - scorer of the winning penalty when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in a shoot-out in the 2012 final - was presented with a silver boot prior to kick-off. Chelsea's away-goal advantage from last month's meeting in Istanbul meant they had no obligation to take the game to Roberto Mancini's side, but they found themselves ahead on the night inside four minutes.

"I think it is confirmed he has ruptured cruciate ligament," Ancelotti said. "He has had bad luck and it is bad luck for Real Madrid because we are going to lose a very important, young player who has done very well this season and surprised everyone." Nevertheless, Ronaldo's brace on the night was enough for him to equal the great Ferenc Puskas's tally of 242 goals in a Madrid shirt. While they and Chelsea join reigning champions Bayern, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in Friday's quarter-final draw, the remaining two ties will be decided on Wednesday. Manchester United must overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit when they host Olympiakos at Old Trafford if they are to make it two Premier League teams in the draw, while Borussia Dortmund defend a 4-2 lead at home to Zenit St Petersburg.

Salgaocar move Pune FC suffer first defeat, go down 1-3 to Tampines Rovers to second spot S

M

ARGAO: Salgaocar FC kept pace at the top of the table after a 2-0 victory over traditional football rivals Dempo Sports in the Round 21 clash of the Airtel ILeague here today. The victory meant Salgaocar are now unbeaten in five matches and have kept a clean sheet in four consecutive games. The turnaround has been since Dudu Omagbemi joined them during the transfer window this year. The Nigerian striker failed to score for the first time since joining the side but that was no problem for Salgaocar as goals from Bikash Jairu (18th minute) and Darryl Duffy (23rd minute) gave Derrick Pereira’s team a comfortable win. The win kept Salgaocar within sniffing distance of the title and the former I-League champions are now just four points adrift of leaders Bengaluru FC.

INGAPORE: Pune FC suffered their first AFC Cup defeat going down 1-3 to Tampines Rovers FC in a Group-H Round 3 encounter at the Jalan Besar Stadium here today. Attacker Riga Mustapha (15th minute) gave Pune FC the lead with a penalty kick conversion before striker Miljan Mrdakovic (38th) pulled the hosts level in the first half. Second half strikes from medio Closa Gonzalez (61st) and Mrdakovic (69th) handed Tampines Rovers all three points. With this loss, Pune FC slipped down to fourth place in Group-H behind leaders Kitchee SC (7 pts), Nay Pyi Taw FC (4 pts) and Tampines Rovers (3 pts) midway through the group-stage. Riga stepped up and coolly converted from the spot sending Hyrulnizam the wrong way while slotting home at the bottom left corner. At the other end, the hosts tried to push up and had a couple of close-range attempts from Mrdakovic go wide. Six minutes past the half hour mark, Pune FC once again went close. Winger Gabriel Fernandes did well to slide in a cross from the right, but the delivery fell just short for Pavlovic, one-on-one with the keeper inside the box. At the other end, Tampines Ramu and Fanai Lalrempuia. pulled level to restore parity. WASHINGTON: Researchers have developed a new test to detect performance-enhancing drugs which they claim is 1,000 times more sensitive than current methods. "How much of a drug someone took or how long ago they took it are beyond the analyst's control. The only thing you can control is how sensitive your method is," said Daniel Armstrong at the University of Texas at Arlington, who led the team. "Our goal is to develop ultra-sensitive methods that will extend the window of detection, and we have maybe the most sensitive method in the world," Armstrong said. Hongyue Guo, a graduate student in Armstrong's lab, explained that the new strategy is a simple variation on a common testing technique called mass spectrometry (MS).

Pistorius’ girlfriend was standing when she was shot

PRETORIA (SOUTH AFRICA): Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend was standing in a toilet cubicle and facing the closed door when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four hollow point bullets fired by the doubleamputee athlete, a police ballistics expert testified at Pistorius' murder trial. Reeva Steenkamp then fell back onto a magazine holder in the cubicle and was struck in the right arm and head by the last two shots fired from the 9 mm pistol through the door as she crossed her arms over her head to protect herself, Capt Christiaan Mangena said. He testified that he believed the second bullet shot missed Steenkamp and ricocheted off a wall inside the cubicle and broke into fragments, which caused bruising on her back.
