ome pockets in Western Suburbs will face water cut on Thursday and Friday as the civic body is checking feasibility of alternate water supply to western suburb since the underground water tunnel is punctured due to bore well digging. Goregaon (East and West) and Malad (East and West) will face 25 per cent water cut during Thursday midnight to Friday midnight. There are chances of low supply Borivli too. Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Jalota said, “We are trying to work out alternate water supply to western suburb, if it works then we will start actual repair of under ground tunnel.” He added, “We have all the necessary technology and skilled man power required for repair of underground tunnel. First priority is that people should get water during the repair period.” The civic body requested citizens to store water and use it judiciously during the water cut.

Cabinet nod for `1,444 crore water supply project

Meanwhile the state cabinet yesterday approved a Rs.1,444 crore project for supply of water in the rural areas. The project, called ‘Jalsurajya -2’, will be implemented in cooperation with the World Bank, which will bear 70 per cent of the project cost. Meanwhile in another development, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced that the government has decided to allot 7,844 taxi permits, cancelled earlier, to the cab operators through bidding. Of these, 100 permits will be reserved for women taxi drivers, an official told PTI.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2013

These are the words of Israeli author Shifra Horn who spoke for the first time on writing about conflict zones and cultural context at the TATA Literature Live festival last week. She had a quick chat with Claudelle Monis about her work, her love for India and working with Jews across the world.

t is not often that you come across a foreigner who ventures into Chor Bazaar alone on her second visit to India. Israeli author Shifra Horn, however, did just that when she zipped in and out of the country to participate in the TATA Literature Live festival held in Mumbai last week. “I’m adventurous like that. I’m actually sad though, that I didn’t have the time to go into the slums. I love knowing a city by its people, markets and bookstores,” she says with a smile. But wasn’t she worried about being alone in an area rarely visited by middle class Mumbaikars? “Not really,” she says, “I’m quite a loner. I like exploring by myself and feeling the place I’m visiting.” It is this depiction of local life that Horn replicates in her books about people and places across the world, from Portugal to Japan. “I need to live in a place for a considerable amount of time to be able to write about it with authenticity. Before I wrote my novel ‘Shalom Japan’ I lived there for five years. I need to interact with people and learn about cultures before I can even consider writing about a country”, says Horn. She however, explains why she hasn’t written about India yet. “I fell

in love with India when I was 11 years old and started reading a book called ‘India’ by Ezriel Carlebach. I still consider it to be my Bible to the country, but I honestly feel that you have to be a genius to write about India. It is such a diverse country, that what applies to one locality almost never applies to another. I think I will have to live here for at least 10 years before I can start writing about it”. Horn’s work deals with ordinary men and women whose lives are set against the backdrop of wars and are ultimately determined by them or by other conflict. Was her decision to make war a backdrop to her stories,

intentional? “No literature or art can function without conflict. There must be some sort of conflict, either between father and son, or mother and daughter, or even between two countries for a book to make sense. I use war as a conflict to motivate my characters and help them evolve”, she says. When talking about writing in a cultural context, Horn doesn’t really agree with the idea that an outsider cannot write about another country with authenticity. She says, “I think outsiders can write about another country through a different perspective and still retain the authenticity demanded of them. Look at ‘India’ by Carlebach. I have never seen a book more authentic than this one about the country.” She does however agree that stereotypes can creep into narratives. “Yes, stereotypes may exist in literature,” she says, “but then again, who can escape them? And everyone knows that all stereotypes are not true. So even if they do creep in, it should be alright.” Considering Horn is an Anthropologist, apart from being a writer, she works extensively with the Jewish community across the world, particularly the oppressed. Has she

ever, we asked her, interacted with the Menashe Jews who live in the North Eastern part of India who are believed by some to be one of the ten lost tribes of Israel scattered by the Assyrians in the 7th century BC? “I heard of the Menashe Jews long before they became famous, and was interested in learning more about them. However, the World Union of Jewish Students that was already working with them, advised me against visiting the territory because of political instability in the region. That’s how my research on them has reached a standstill”, she says. When asked about her opinion of the Indian perception of Israelis in India, as perpetuated through literature and the media, she says, “I think the approach to Israeli soldiers in Goa is a little misinformed. What would you like to do after you finish three straight years in army service? It’s understandable that these boys need to unwind, and what better place to do so than the beach. Yes, they might move around in groups and be vocal, but that is what they’re used to doing in the army. My son has been to Goa after his stint in the army, and loved every bit of it, and as I’ve said before, so do I.”

Jacqueline Fernandez stands up for Victoria horses By Vishnudas Sheshrao

he Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday was wrapped up hurriedly as most of the civic leaders were gathered in the antechamber of Mayor Sunil Prabhu to get a glimpse of actress Jacqueline Fernandez who was scheduled to meet Prabhu in his office at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters. The Sri Lanka-born actress along with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA) members requested Mayor Sunil Prabhu to stop cruelty against horses used to drive traditional Victoria – a horse cart. The Standing Committee meeting was wrapped in 30 minutes instead of the usual two to three hours. One of the politicians admitted that most of the members were in the Mayor’s antechambers. The mayor’s office was stormed for a few minutes by media people, politicians and civic workers. Some members went up to the extent of standing up on chairs to get pictures of the actress. Prabhu personally requested people to move out for a few minutes so that his staff could orgranise a meeting with her. Jacqueline said, “Unhealthy and ill horses are deprived of medical treatment and forced to carry Victoria. These horses don’t get proper food and water.” She requested the Mayor to stop Victoria carriages in the city. At present, Victoria are used at Girgaon Chowpatty, Five Garden, Juhu Chowpatty, Gateway of India, Gorai Khadi, Mahim and Wadala to give ride to tourists. These Victoria have been in the

So the respite has proved to have a short life after all, and already the residents of Campa Cola, seized of the Supreme Court declaration that if no fresh proposal was offered to them by the BMC, the demolition would resume after May 31, 2014. It is difficult to imagine how the BMC is going to demolish flats on the upper floors of the buildings, some of them rising to 17 floors, when they do not have any kind of expertise. And who is to actually demolish them so that the flats on the lower floors remain unscathed? We understand that the BMC’s idea of demolition is to punch holes in the walls and make the premises unlivable. So it will fall upon the other residents to take on the onerous task of making their society look decent again. And in all this, one question raises its head again and again. What is the BMC going to do about its own corrupt officials, who allow the construction of huge buildings, knowing all the time that these are illegal?

Dubai, the city that is absolutely serious about tourism. At night it presents a perfect picture of dazzling wealth amid the mystery of the desert.

Razzle dazzle

In 2011, Mumbai and Maharashtra received the highest number of foreign tourists in the country, around 4.8 million. Perhaps last year it was a little higher. In contrast, little Dubai has welcomed over 7.9 million visitors in the first nine months of 2013, a 9.8 per cent increase over the corresponding period for the year before. Revenues for hoteliers and hotel apartment operators up over 17 per cent and this is all part of its tourism vision programme for 2020. The cynical and the jaded might say that Dubai

merits a single visit of one week and in that time you can pretty much see this tiny Emirate. But that is the cynics’ view. We have visited several times, admittedly mostly on work, but each time there has been more to see, and more important, more to experience. All this without even visiting the Burj – yet. But it is the pictures that Dubai makes that we really like, hence this item and an invitation to look at the city by night, blazing with light and floating on its own visions, still a miracle fairy tale that might yet prove a mirage, vanishing one day in a massive desert storm. For now, enjoy the view.

He however added that still there were some short-comings in the proposed legislation which needed to be resolved by the government. She slammed the state government for failing to nominate chairperson for the state womens commission, a post which has been lying vacant since 2009. She demanded that the womens commission should take up the problems of harassment, cases of atrocities, equal pay and other issues faced by women in unorganised sector. Somaiya stated that there is no proper coordination between the working of the national and state womens commission. She called upon both the womens commission to give adequate publicity to women oriented welfare schemes, rehabilitation schemes and funds. two-day-old baby boy was found outside a building compound in Panvel City in the early hours of Wednesday. The infant was discovered wrapped in a cotton cloth outside Pal Castle building at 6 am, by Sachin Patil, a passerby. As soon he heard the baby crying, Patil picked up the child and asked the building watchman if he had seen anyone leaving the child behind, to which the watchman replied that he had not. Patil then took the baby to the Panvel City police station and registered a case against an unidentified person. Police officers then called a team of doctors from the Panvel Grahmin Hospital who informed them that the child is just two days old and has suffered several leg injuries. Mumbai. These taxi licenses will be given to Phone Fleet taxis through tender process and out of these, 100 licenses will be kept reserved for women taxi drivers. Taking the decision, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan approved massive reduction in the minimum auction price for the licenses. The license price for women taxi drivers has been fixed at Rs.1.50 lakh while the license price for others has been fixed at Rs.3 lakh. The state government has argued that it has taken the decision with a view to augment the taxi services keeping in mind that Mumbai is an international city. The cancelled taxi licenses in Mumbai are 19,687 out of which the government had allocated 4,000 licenses to

SMS Taxi Cab company in 2010 through auction process. At present there are 15,687 taxi licenses out of which 50 per cent, that is 7,844 licenses will be redistributed to regular yellowblack taxis. While distributing these licenses each of the tender applicants can bid for minimum of 100 and maximum of 2,500 licenses. On January 20, 2010 the state government had decided to give 4,000 licenses to Phone Fleet taxis. After which on August 14 this year the government through notification had invited objections and suggestions. Commensurate with that the final guidelines are being framed, states a government press release issued here yesterday.

She said the Congress was laying emphasis on infrastructural development: The party would build doubledecker flyovers in Delhi. And she attacked AAP’s Kejriwal and said he makes points in the manifesto but no solutions. The Congress will never stop making progress. She claimed that the manifesto was based on practical issues. The AAP’s manifesto made several promises to the citizens and gave the assurance that within a short time, many promises would be implemented. A promise which is likely to cause a good impact is the promise to slash the electrical bill of citizens by 50 per cent. The high cost electricity has been causing a great deal of unrest in Delhi. The big, pertinent question is whether Kejriwal will really be able to reduce the cost. Just this one support from APP is likely to get a lot of support to the party. Arvind Kejriwal has other plans for development in Delhi: He wants the city police to be under the state government and that the Centre should have no control over it. This promise is likely to draw a great deal of support to AAP. The manifesto seeks to change the existing system. The manifesto says AAP will get the Janlokpal Bill passed by Parliament. The manifesto also says it will crackdown on several corrupt bodies including the tanker mafia. The manifesto of the AAP is more impressive than that of the Congress. Sheila Dikshit appears to be overconfident and she seems to underestimate AAP’s capacity to win the Delhi elections.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2013

T is that time of year in Delhi when everyone goes to weddings almost every day. The streets are filled with the sound of Bollywood songs as wedding processions with grooms on white horses went their way to wedding venues in 'farm houses' on the edge of the city. Since I live on the edge of the city I am surrounded by streets that seem dedicated only to band, baja, baraat. All night I hear the sound of celebrations and firecrackers from my bedroom window. I do not mind this much because the sounds add joyousness and festivity to increasingly cold winter nights. And, I myself have been embroiled in recent days in a family wedding that was so traditional that every ceremony took place on a different day and there were many ceremonies. But, this is Delhi and politics is mixed up even with celebration so during these ceremonies I found myself talking more about politics than about the bride and groom. The latest political game in town is a game of numbers. How many seats do you give Congress? How many more seats do you think the BJP will get with Modi? How many seats are you giving a third front?

Another Gowda or Gujral Those who ask the questions immediately give you their own answers. So in an elegant garden full of fairy lights and the sound of Qawwals, where guests gathered after the milni to drink and make merry I was first accosted by a political friend, whose sympathies lie with a third front, who said he was certain that a regional leader would be India's next prime minister. “You see the BJP can at the outset get no more than 160 to 180 seats and the Congress no more than 100 so the Congress is already making plans to support a prime minister from a regional party.” He had barely said this when a Congress sympathiser joined us and gave us his assessment. “The Congress is losing the election,” he said “but the Congress will retain power... be prepared for another Deve Gowda or Gujral.” Incidentally, in Delhi there is more interest in what will happen in the general election than in the results of the state elections in December. The next day at the lunch party held after the Anand Kaarij, the political chitchat continued. I found myself in conversation with a young Lok Sabha MP and I asked him what he

thought the mood was among Congress MPs at the moment and this is what he said. “They are despondent. They know that chances of a UPA-III are dim but what they all seem to be working towards now is ensuring that Modi doesn't become prime minister. They are prepared to go to any lengths to make sure that he doesn't get to Delhi.” I found the observation particularly astute because it is what I have personally observed whenever I have come back to Delhi after a short absence. This time I returned after three weeks and was astounded to find how much more gloom there is in Congress ranks and how much more determination to defeat Modi. It is not the BJP that is seen as a threat, it is Modi himself, and this has intensified be-

his family. No sooner did 'Snoopgate' collapse than fresh charges against Modi were leveled over his decision to share a stage with his party's MLAs from Muzaffarnagar despite them having been arrested for allegedly stirring up violence during the recent riots. And, then came a fusillade from Rahul Gandhi who announced at one of his campaign rallies that the BJP (read Modi) was against the poor and proof of this was the party's alleged opposition to MNREGA on the grounds that “poor people become lazy if you give them free food.” The truth is that BJP governments across the country have embraced MNREGA despite it having done almost nothing to reduce unemployment in rural India. Rahul Gandhi perhaps forgot that the venerable L.K. Advani actually praised this scheme at the United Nations last year without once examining if the thousands of crore rupees poured into it could not have been better spent on creating real jobs in the villages. But, I digress so let us return to the numbers game that is currently being played in Delhi's corridors of power.

Media myth ON THE SPOT

Those who are playing it are mostly people who hardly ever travel outside the civic limits of Delhi so when you tell them, as I do, that I have seen some of Modi's rallies first hand Tavleen Singh and wandered about rural parts of the councause it appears to have become clear to even try and seen the huge response to them they the politically illiterate that he is attracting tell you that they know better. F your colleagues think the way you do and organize, then your life can become very, very meaningful, very joyful. Suppose you try to look at the inmate at the prison while sleeping and understand their suffering, their despair and you practice looking deeply to see how these people have come here and spend their time like this. They are making each other suffer. They inflict suffering on each other out of their ignorance, out of their anger and hatred. As an inmate, you are not free to go out to do the things you like. You are locked into prison. You suffer enough and you don't know how to handle your suffering. We inflict suffering on our inmates and you make decision worse. Hell is created by that kind of practice. As a corrections officer sitting there, why don't you use your time to practice looking deeply? Is there anything you can do in order to help these people to suffer less? Is it possible for inmates in a prison to practice so that they can suffer less? So they can help each other in the practice of bringing hope and joy in their life in prison? Of course, the answer is positive. I have visited prisons and spent

Bharat ‘Ratna’ or not? WITH the hysteria being generated around Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, one can perhaps pardon the general public for getting carried away by the hoopla encouraged by the media. But how does one account for our political leaders playing to the public gallery and attempting to cash in on Tendulkar’s popularity? There is no question that Tendulkar is an extremely gifted cricketer, but that does not qualify him for being considered for the nation’s highest civilian honour. We need to put his achievements in perspective. The Bharat Ratna is conferred on Indian citizens who have a record not only of extraordinary achievement but have rendered exemplary public service. The principal beneficiary of Tendulkar’s prowess has been Tendulkar himself. He has earned hundreds of crores, ironically even more from product endorsements than from his cricketing skills. There is not even the pretence of public service. By all means, shower honours on an extraordinary sportsman, but do not put him in the same category as Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and J.R.D. Tata, to name just two. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

SINCE this ‘dishing out the Ratna’ time, here are a few suggestions. The BJP is clamouring for Vajpayee. They can deliver the upper-cut to the Congress by adding the name of Narasimha Rao. That will put the Congress and the government and in

Shocking TC incident

While a Bharat Ratna has been declared for Sachin Tendulkar, the BJP has been vying for a Bharat Ratna for former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee particular Manmohan Singh in a greater quandary. What about Manekshaw, Verghese Kurien and Dhyan Chand? Most of our netas have become rich only because the way was shown by Dhirubhai Ambani – so why not him? — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

THE Bharat Ratna has of late has become the hottest topic with the BJP demanding one for Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former PM, who could not steer the BJP to a win in 2004. He could do very little during his short tenure; hardly anything apart from the Golden Quadrilateral. His performance was pretty ordinary and the Kargil war was avoidable saving the demographic count reveals that they were then only 89,000 plus. This trend of precarious shrink certainly worries the community top brass today. In fact they are now offering incentives to the families to have a second kid with financially assistance by the Panchayat till they are 18. However, being attached to this community head long for a period of almost more than three decades, I feel that the cause for this alarming population decline is primarily late marriages coupled with a lack of proper shelters despite subsidised accommodation provided by Tatas and other Parsi corporate biggies.

ON November 19 there was a checking at the Western Railways’ Borivali station (west) at 8 am between platform one and seven. All the ticket checkers were in uniform. They were doing their duties honestly, charging persons who didn’t have valid railway tickets or passes and giving them receipts for the fine they collected but there was one exception. I was surprised when one young boy didn’t have a ticket or money to pay the fine, this TC asked the boy for his mobile phone and put it in his own pocket and asked the boy to bring the fine money. I want to ask the concerned author— Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai ity if these ticket checkers are allowed to take mobile phones from people and hold them as guarantee. He never made efforts to investigate the Bofors scam and punish the guilty and totally forgot about the ‘Common Civil Code’. He was like any other Congress PM. He was also the Chief of the BJP when his deputies took on Babri Masjid and was responsible for the aftermath and the violence thereafter. He is nowhere close to being awarded a Bharat Ratna. The BJP’s claims are far from convincing. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

SUDDENLY in an election year there are a lot of people suggesting that our former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee should be felicitated with the Bharat Ratna. While Vajpayee was a good orator and a statesman, his stand on secularism was always ambiguous. Let us not forget that when miscreants were planning to demolish the Babri mosque, Vajpayee did precious little to show reason to his straying party men and we all know that peace and integrity of our land was shattered miserably with the communal riots that followed the demolition. Awards such as the Bharat Ratna belong to people who have brought a smile on the face of the average Indian, and have carried our country to new heights.

mestic events have begun offering indication of a faint glow on the horizon of an effort towards democratic stability. If the general’s retirement turns out to be the harbinger for future events, then Pakistani society will march towards freeing itself from dictatorships and a strong stable polity, whose benign effects will percolate across the border for a more peaceful South Asia. — Ranajoy Sen, Kolkata

Congress fears opinion polls AS reported, it is well-known that Congress fears the traditional opinion polls to be conducted just before the elections. It is the work of the print and electronic media to enlighten people and also to get an idea of the polls. It also indicates the freedom of press which should never be muzzled or banned. Thus the question arises as to why rrstirctions should be placed on opinion polls which have been in force for such a long time. It is very simple to know and understand why the Congress party wants them banned. Elections are approaching and thus the aam admi will calculate the performances and achievements of the ruling Congress party. There is not the slightest doubt that the UPA government headed by the Congress party has been a total failure on all fronts and has failed miserably to perform its duties. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

The Manmohan Singh government has been under the scanner for various scams and has now gained attention for expressing its disapproval of the opinion polls.

IT is surprising that the Congress Party is blowing its whistle against the opinion polls at a time when it should have been

supporting it. The number of seats projected to be won by the Congress and the percentage of popularity of its leaders like the present PM and its Vice-President are exponentially high given the reported hard facts of misgovernance, gross inefficiency and above all the unprecedented inflation and alleged scams like 2G, Coal scam, CWG, Adarsh, Helicopter deal and Vadra deal, to name a few. Congress, on the other hand, should consider themselves extremely lucky to hold to those projections, heave a sigh of relief, feel happy and welcome many more series of opinion polls to gain the impression for themselves that there are people to hint that their performance is not as worse as it is made out to be. There is, therefore, no reason for the Congress to rue over the carnival of the opinion polls and keep seeing the positives. — T. Shankar, Mumbai

WEDDING

WORRIES W

hile getting married is stressful for the groom-to-be as well, brides-to-be have a tougher time because they have so many things to see to — from the glow of her skin and hideous surprise acne to finding finery for various occasions and avoiding weight gain. Then there are dark circles, anxiety and mood swings. Plus, she’s moving out of the house that she grew up in. You cannot help a bride remain calm or tell her how to plan her wedding unless you’ve been in her shoes. So, we did just that — asked women in the city who have been there, done that. They tell you how to avoid losing it before D-day arrives and one thing that they wish they had done differently on their wedding day.

Wedding season is here and so are nervous brides-to-be, stressed with the task of planning their perfect wedding. To ease the tension, the Woman’s World team asked married women across the city to share their pearls of wisdom about what brides-to-be should keep in mind while planning for their big day

reception had been ordered. Ordering it a month in advance is how it usually works. However, I was so scared of putting on weight that I hopped onto a strict diet in order to maintain my figure, as my body weight keeps on fluctuating. Everything was going well until my lehenga arrived, two days before the wedding. Turns out, it was extremely loose for me because I had lost six kilos! While the tailor did alter it to make it my size, it still didn’t fit me perfectly on my wedding day. It’s been three years and I still feel disappointed. So, my advice is that you should stay the size you are after you are done giving measurements for your bridal outfit.” One thing I wish I had done differently: Avoided that damned diet!

Why Is the garland made Of lIlIes?

Brides-to-be often go on diets in order to keep themselves in shape before the wedding. But, Snigdha Goyal tells us how this backfired for her. She says, “While the period before my wedding and the wedding itself went smoothly, there was one hiccup I still feel frustrated about. All the married women I knew had gone on a diet before their wedding. One month before my wedding, my bridal finery was zeroed in on and even my lehenga for the

Yukta Singh got married last year and she shares a very important pearl of wedding wisdom. “Ensure that when it comes to your wedding preparations, you and your family as well as the groom’s family, are all on the same page. Discuss even the smallest details properly. Otherwise, there’s a good chance that the groom’s family will suddenly point out the things that they are dissatisfied with on the day of the wedding, when you really can’t do anything about it. In my case, they even had a Continued on pg 14 «

Continued from pg 13 « problem with lily garlands, as they thought roses were classier,” she tells us. One thing I wish I had done differently: Not invited my in-laws to my wedding (now, if only that was possible!).

Leave It tO yOur parents

>> From knowing the ceremonies to having an efficient mehendi lady, there are a number of tips married women in the city have for brides-to-be

Namita Tewari, who got married at an extremely young age, had her parents take care of all the wedding nitty-gritties. “While I was dealing with the entire idea of getting married and starting my new life, my parents were around to take care of the many little things that go into making a wedding the best day of your life. In hindsight, it was the best gift they gave me. I could truly be part of the celebrations without worrying about things such as the puris being hot and the flowers looking fresh.” One thing I wish I had done differently: Gotten to know all my distant relatives — it’s embarrassing to have people wishing you luck, without you knowing who they are.

HIre peOpLe tO dO It fOr yOu “It is a great idea to have several people helping you out with your wedding preparations. When I got married, my parents, being quite old, were unable to help with most of the arrangements that needed attention. Right up to the last moment, I was caught up with making sure everything was working with clockwork precision and all the arrangements were as they should be. As a result, I was so paranoid and panicky about every thing that I couldn’t enjoy my own wedding,” says Poonam Aditya. One thing I wish I had done differently: I wish I had worn lighter outfits. Also, I should have worn flat shoes and not heels — the subsequent foot aches went on for days after.

researching before the wedding is very crucial. She explains, “Start by imagining what you want your wedding to be like. Make the most of this wonderful tool called Google, which will help you find the best resources to meet your requirements while planning your dream wedding. Read as many blogs as you can and interact with as many recent experience holders; nothing works better than that. Also, do not surrender yourself to temptations, take your time to decide. I’m sure you do not want to end up thinking ‘this is better than what I already have!’ It happened to me with my wedding lehenga. I bought it so early that I kept cribbing about it till D-day.” You can read more about Swati and her bridal woes on her blog titled Thebridewhoknowsnothing. One thing I wish I had done differently: Better research before buying that expensive lehenga.

Keep It easy and sImpLe Amita Mistry feels that the best way to be stress-free in the months leading up to your wedding is to keep it simple. “The best way to go forward is to have reasonable expectations and excellent planning. Include things that make you happy, even if they aren’t traditional. Avoid extravagance and have a small celebration with only your closest people. This way, your wedding will turn out to be a fun party!” she says. One thing I wish I had done differently: We asked the pandit to keep the ceremony short, but it still went on forever! I wish we had done a runthrough to explain how short it should be.

dOn’t cry Or crIb

deveLOp a tHIcK sKIn Yoshita Gupta tells you how you should handle stupid questions thrown at you during your wedding. She says, >> Staying calm through your wedding planning is one of the top tips

“From the time you tell your friends and family about your upcoming wedding, right up to the actual day and even after, my one advice to brides-to-be is be to develop a thick skin and good acting skills — I’m not kidding! We constantly complain about ‘those’ people who ask the silliest questions: have you planned your honeymoon, what about the ‘good news’, are you going to quit your job and more. We can complain as much as we want, but the fact is that these people will keep asking these questions. Rather than getting annoyed, just develop the habit of ignoring it, smiling and answering in the most diplomatic way possible.” One thing I wish I had done differently: Not gotten so annoyed with some of my relatives (laughs).

QuIcK, meHendI wOman! Karuna Sinh, who has been married for a decade, gives brides-to-be a few of quick pointers: “Finish off with all the beauty care treatments before the wedding ceremonies start as this will help save time. Also, make sure the clothes and jewellery are ready beforehand and spend more time with your loved ones.” She also shares with us a funny incident that happened before her wedding. She elaborates, “It was my mehendi ceremony. The lady creating the mehendi design on my hands arrived and everyone circled around me. However, as time passed people in that room started disappearing and I was stuck alone with the mehendi lady (who was excruciatingly slow) for five hours without food or water! No one even came to check on me.” One thing I wish I had done differently: Called a quicker mehendi lady!

Have yOu researcHed enOugH? According to Swati Mehrotra, who got married last February,

Mili Puri got married three years ago and has a couple of things to share for our brides-to-be. “Enjoy each and every moment while planning your wedding — get involved in the small details, don’t throw fits for no reason as you can do without the drama, follow budgets so you can avoid arguing with your parents while shopping, get massages regularly to relax, be silly, spend time with your siblings as this time never comes back, aimlessly walk around the house (you are going miss it later on) and most importantly, have fun and don’t crib.” Also, ironically, tomorrow is Mili’s wedding anniversary! Happy anniversary in advance from the Woman’s World team and every other thankful bride-to-be who’s reading this! One thing I wish I had done differently: I only wish I hadn't cried as much as I did during my bidaai. After all, I was happy to marry the love of my life!

KnOw yOur weddIng ceremOny weLL Sandhya Gorthi has been married for 16 years and tells us that the memories of her wedding are quite hazy. However, prod further and her treasure trove of advice, coming from marital bliss, spills. She says, “Discuss the wedding preparations with your to-be-husband and his family members. Adjust a little and take into consideration your family and his family members’ likes and dislikes as well. Don’t make too many rules, but do make lists and delegate. On D day, don’t try and control everything and let things flow. Stay in the moment and enjoy every bit of it. I’ve known people who have had the most disastrous weddings and now have a happy married life! Some things will go wrong. That’s where family and friends will step in. Allow them to.” One thing I wish I had done differently: I had a part Kerala and part Andhra ceremony. I didn’t know the husband holds the wife’s toe and leads her across seven mounds of rice in the Andhra ceremony. Had I known that, I probably wouldn’t have used a Mickey Mouse band aid on my toe.

Okay, we know the dress is a bit silly with the hot pink and head-totoe velvet, but it’s also incredibly fun! Gaelyn carries it off really well thanks to her bubbly personality and lovely figure. We also like that she’s kept her accessories simple and to a minimum.

This dress looks like it should be sprawled on the living room floor of some tacky millionaire’s mansion. On its own it’s just about passable, but it goes from bad to worse thanks to the hoops and glitter. But, we love those large-enough-tocarry-snacks pockets.

It looks like Christmas has come early for Suman. These jolly colours make the dress stand out. It’s different, feminine but perhaps a tad big for the petite Suman. She should have paired it with subtle shaded shoes, because these are a little too Christmas pantomime.

« JUST OUT! lakmé clear pores For a deep cleansing experience, try Lakmé’s Clean-up Clear Pore facewash, face scrub and face mask. All three products are enriched with green tea extracts to soothe your skin with salicylic acid to prevent breakouts. The face wash is good. At first you feel like your skin has been cleaned of all impurities, but this effect lasts for four hours before it goes back to being oily. The face scrub works like a charm. Your skin will feel softer and you’ll feel like it’s finally breathing as the scrub removes all the dirt and grime. Also, it doesn’t have a drying effect even if you use it every alternate day and the effects are long lasting. After applying the face mask, my face looked bright, clean and radiant. dove elixir hair Fall rescue hair oil This almond oil, infused with rose petals, doesn’t have a typical rose fragrance; instead it smells a little citrusy, making it a subtle and refreshing product. Packed attractively, the organic oil can also be used as a serum as it has a very non-greasy feel. The best part about this oil is that you need not keep it on overnight. Apply it 30 minutes before a shower and you’re good to go. It adds a lot of shine and lustre to your hair, although it doesn’t seem nourishing enough. I did not feel a significant change in the quality of my hair and I didn’t use it enough to see whether it actually strengthened my roots and prevented hair fall. My hair was also very oily the day after, so while it looks great for a day, I won’t be using it as a regular shampoo. rating *** where All beauty and drug stores price `125 (shampoo) and `130 (conditioner) for 80ml

Do men and women have different salary levels? a) Of course, men are paid higher... just like in all offices, right? b) Sometimes they give men higher pay, but they try not to make it obvious. c) They pay people based on their work, not gender.

« CAREER ADVICE

I switched jobs two months ago and have been working with a colleague on an important project. I have noticed that this colleague hogs all the attention during meetings with the client, making me come across as uninvolved and disinterested. I don’t know how to bring this up without offending her. — Alaida shah, Goregaon (W) dear Alaida, The reason for your colleague’s behaviour could be because you are new. Explain that you are well-versed with the project and would like to contribute actively in discussions with a client as well. Before your next meeting, make the effort to discuss which points each of you will tackle with the client. This way, you both get an equal say and come across as a strong team to the client as well. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

I have a colleague who is extremely religious and chooses to break into a sermon almost on a daily basis. Although we have a good working relationship, I am not religious, so I don’t appreciate her telling me what my religious goals should be. How do I deal with this? — smriti singh, santacruz (W) dear smriti, The easiest way would be to ignore her. However, let her know that you aren’t religious in casual conversation. If she doesn’t take the hint, have an honest chat and tell her that although you respect her faith, you find being sermoned uncomfortable. Without being rude, make sure your sentiments reach her loud and clear.

ith working mothers and ambitious women being frontrunners in companies, times have changed from when women stayed at home with the children, while men went out to earn the daily bread. But, have offices really progressed that much with the times? Do you still have to feel guilty about taking maternity leave and do you feel embarrassed to ask for the bathroom facilities you need? Do men in your office still get taken more seriously, promoted faster and paid more? Take a look at whether your workplace is woman friendly or not.

Do you have children’s rooms/nursing stations at work? a) No! Why would we? b) We do have a room where we can go, but most of us don’t use it because we want to be taken seriously. c) We have play areas and nursing rooms for working mothers who can’t afford fulltime babysitters. Is your office in a safe location? a) No, it’s quite an unsafe area. b) The entrance is a little questionable, but the office itself is fine. c) It’s a safe, secure building and area. Mostly As Your office is definitely not woman friendly and unfortunately, you seem to have accepted it as part of your working life. There’s no shame in asking for extra benefits and it’s actually better to be safe rather than sorry, especially in a city like Mumbai. Making your own way home late at night and constantly feeling unsafe is not worth it, even for the sake of your career. Children’s rooms are great even for working fathers and bathrooms are just a basic

necessity! Speak up or find some place safer and more woman friendly to work.

you make it clear that you deserve pay based on your skills, not gender.

Mostly bs We don’t think your office is intentionally unfriendly towards women, but it still has some way to go before you can consider yourself lucky to be working there. Don’t be afraid to ask for more, you’re not any less of a worker if you want a little bathroom comfort or want to travel safely after work. And, make sure

Mostly Cs Your office has to be run by a woman, because what you’ve got is too good to be true. This is how offices should be — safe and comfortable for women without being biased towards them. Make sure that you don’t take what you have for granted as all working women in the city aren’t this lucky!

Menopause Myths Because it’s a hush-hush topic, menopause is seldom discussed openly, which has led to a lot of myths around the problem. Priyanka Singh busts six very prevalent ones for you

Menopausal symptoms disturb sleep, a known cause of weight gain. And, it’s difficult to exercise when you’re exhausted. When most women go through menopause in their early 50s, activity has considerably decreased from their lives and diets have also undergone a lot of change. This also causes weight gain.

mytH #5 menopausal women are more depressed Studies show that most women navigate past menopause without mood swings. Some even report that the years between 45 and 55 are among the best of their lives. The legendary menopausal crankiness is often caused by hot flashes and undiagnosed sleep problems. Other possible culprits are side effects from medication or an undiagnosed thyroid problem. Stress also affects mood. Around midlife, several women are coping with teenage children, elderly parents or competitive jobs. If you get blues for more than two weeks and they interfere with your ability to function at home or at work, consult your doctor to find out what’s wrong.

mytH #6

mytH #1

mytH #2

the age you get your period determines the age you will go through menopause Several women think that when they run out of eggs, they will go through menopause. So, if they get their period earlier, they’re going to run out of eggs sooner. This is completely untrue. Women are born with millions of eggs. And when they go through menopause, they still have some eggs; they’re just old and do not work anymore. Genetics seem to determine the age you will go through menopause, but there are a number of factors that can shut your ovaries down early. Medical conditions, such as diabetes and cancer, as well as smoking, can play a significant role.

Eating certain foods will stop hot flashes While some foods such as hot peppers, refined sugar and alcohol, increase hot flashes, there’s no solid research confirming that certain foods help stop them. They just decrease discomfort when you’re experiencing them. Try to avoid food items that trigger hot flashes instead.

mytH #3 all menopause symptoms are temporary, including hot flashes How we wish this was true, but sadly it is not! For most women, hot flashes will end within two to three years after menopause, but for

about 20% of them, they will continue for the rest of their lives. Thankfully, there are many treatments to keep hot flashes under control. Also, hot flashes aren’t the only symptom of menopause that last a lifetime. Vaginal dryness, isn’t temporary either and gets worse over time. However, medication makes the condition better.

mytH #4 Weight gain is a result of menopause When a woman goes through menopause, the lack of estrogen causes a redistribution of weight. However, a lack of estrogen does not slow down your metabolism. There are a number of reasons women gain weight around the time they go through menopause.

your sex life is over Women of all ages complain of sexual problems. In fact, sexual desire is driven by the quality of your relationship, your upbringing, how you feel about your body, the amount of stress in your life and even how well you sleep. It is true however, that sex changes at menopause. You may need more time and more stimulation to get aroused (that’s also true for men at midlife). Vaginal dryness can be particularly problematic, but a good lube can help with that.

mytH #6 menopause means you’re old The average age of menopause (which means you haven’t had a period for a year) is 51. You could have many happy and healthy years ahead of you. Some women enter menopause as early as age 28. This is called premature menopause and the cause is often unknown, although sometimes there’s a genetic issue at play. Other women enter menopause early because of an illness, or when their ovaries are removed in a surgery. So, menopause actually has nothing to do with getting old.

« TOP 5: NATURAL REMEDIES FOR MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS There are some natural ways to alleviate the symptoms of menopause. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you about a few of them Eat somE GinsEnG Ginseng has been known to improve your mood. And, when you’re going through menopause, you may undergo mood swings. Including ginseng (try ginseng based drinks) in your diet will help you sleep and feel better overall.

HavE a supplEmEnt Evening primrose oil has been shown to improve hot flashes, relieving you of the uncomfortable feeling. But, you should contact your doctor before taking these supplements,

because there have been some reported side effects.

GEt morE soy Soy is very beneficial for menopausal women, mainly because it contains isoflavones, which help your estrogen levels. Adding it to your diet will help ease hot flashes and night sweats. Eat tofu, or just switch over to soy milk to alleviate the symptoms.

GEt somE ExErcisE You will feel tired, unable to sleep and won’t feel like getting up to move at all, but lazing around during

menopause is the worst thing that you can do. Doing some light exercise will help stave off hot flashes and also reduce irritability, stabilising your mood.

HavE cool drinks While tea might be your go-to comfort drink and coffee might be your pick-me-up, avoid anything that contains caffeine when you’re going through menopause. Instead, drink cool drinks (avoid anything fizzy) and juices to help you feel less dehydrated. This in turn will help with your hot flashes.

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on... I am 28 and my girlfriend is 24. I am mad about her and am in love with her. I don’t want to be with anyone else...

So, I planned a very romantic date. We went for a movie, dinner was a picnic at the beach... She was loving it!

>> Are you flirting with your boyfriend’s friends or just being friendly? Take our quiz to find out!

You know I love you right?

Yup!

The moment was perfect, so...

Marry me!

Do you spend a lot of time with your boyfriend’s friends, even when he isn’t around? a) Quite often. His friends are my friends. b) Not really. I enjoy their company much more when my boyfriend is also around. c) Never. Do you end up confiding in your boyfriend’s friends more than you confide in him? a) Of course I do, they’re so easy to talk to. b) We do have our moments, but I’m more comfortable confiding in my boyfriend. c) I would never confide in them. When you’re all hanging out together, is your boyfriend often clamouring for your attention? a) I have noticed it happen a few times. b) Why would he clamour? He knows where my loyalties lie. c) I stick to him when we’re out.

Are 2am calls and texts between you and his friends the norm? a) Yes, I don’t see the harm. b) Not unless it is an emergency. While we are good friends, it’s important to have boundaries. c) I don’t even have their numbers! Do you think arm-brushes, hugging his friends and frequently dropping compliments is absolutely harmless? a) Yes, of course. b) Once in a while is fine. But, doing it all the time borders on flirting for me. c) We don’t even shake hands. Is discussing your boyfriend’s life with his friends a good idea? a) Why not? They are his friends after all. b) No, it could be risky. He might have told me certain details in confidence that his friends aren’t aware of. c) I don’t discuss private issues with strangers.

Mostly As While your boyfriend may love

that you’re outgoing and open to being a good friend to his friends, your behaviour is close to flirting. He trusts you, but he is unhappy about your excessive interaction and involvement in his friends’ lives. Take a step back and reassess the situation. Be friendly, but remember, 2am phone calls, lingering hugs and isolating your boyfriend when you interact with his friends is a complete no-no.

Mostly Bs You are on the right track. While

you understand that it’s important to get to know your boyfriend’s friends, you also know where to stop and hold back. You have things under control as far as what acceptable behaviour with your boyfriend’s friends goes. It also shows that you and your boyfriend are on the same wavelength and trust each other.

Wait! You are serious?

Mostly Cs You’re not too friendly, but you

come across as uninterested or as if you hate your boyfriend’s friends. This can make them uncomfortable in your presence, making it hard to hang out together. Strike a good balance and don’t just stick to your man when you’re in a social setting.

« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, Recently, my boyfriend seems to have taken a sudden interest in cooking me a meal instead of us going out to a nice restaurant. While the gesture is incredibly sweet, the food he rustles up is either too spicy, too salty, slightly burnt, or a combination of the lot. I have to admit, it is fun to have someone cook for me every once in a while, but i’d like to eat out too. How do I tell him he’s not cut out for cooking without hurting

his feelings and let him know subtly that it may be a good idea to eat out at a restuarant once in a while? — tina s., Wadala Dear Anna, Let’s just start by taking a moment to appreciate what an adorable boyfriend you have. While it is a good idea to stay in and enjoy each other’s company once in a while, we do see your problem with the unpalatable food. Next time, try cooking

your boyfriend a meal instead. Or, better still, do it together. This way, you can keep an eye on the salt, do something fun together and have a scrumptious meal by the end of it. Also, have an honest chat with your boyfriend. Tell him that you appreciate his enthusiasm, but you would still like to go out once in a while to grab a bite or have a few drinks. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

“She seemed taken aback. I was serious obviously, but then I pretended I was joking. She took the ring and wore it on her thumb. I thought she would be so happy and say ‘YES.’ Instead, now every time we meet she jokingly proposes. Help!” — Mr. FOOL a) You obviously jumped the gun. She is still young and maybe not ready. Tell her you were serious, but that there is no hurry. b) You said you loved her and she said ‘Yup?’ and took the ring? And she makes fun of your proposal? You may want to rethink this girl. She sounds immature, selfish and not serious about you. c) Ask her again. Properly. LAST WEEK: Miss N. should pick Option A: You have obviously picked a side. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Wednesday (November 20, 2013) a net 80.45 points (1.30%) and closed at the 6122 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 6186 points level. Amara Raja Batteries (ARBL) reported its Q2FY14 results that were ahead of our estimates on the margins and bottomline front. Revenues at ~Rs 807 crore (higher ~12% YoY) were lower than estimates on lower sales in the home UPS segment due to weak summer/good monsoon. EBITDA margins at 17.6% (~132 bps QoQ increase) came at a 15 quarter high due to a) decline in share of low margin home UPS segment, b) consecutive price hikes in the last two quarters, c) possible impact of low cost inventory and d) decline in other expenses. Subsequently, PAT at ~Rs 95 crore was significantly higher than expected. We remain positive on the long-term growth prospects of the auto replacement segment feel ARBL will be well placed. ARBL’s performance has continued to be impressive even as industry leader Exide has struggled to maintain profitability. With the company’s consistent performance, strong return ratios, visibility on earnings and strong balance sheet, we believe ARBL’s multiples deserve an upward revision. We, thus, raise our multiple to 14x FY15E EPS, higher than Exide (13x) and recommend BUY with a target price of Rs 380.

Ventura Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Aegis Logistics CMP: Rs. 150

Target Rs. 215

In Q2FY14, Aegis Logistics (Aegis) reported numbers in line with our expectations. The revenue was up by 77.3% YoY to Rs 1,562.9 crore led by a record revenue from the liquid division and an increase in the LPG gas sourcing volumes. On a comparative basis, profit from operations was at Rs 27.8 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 48.9 crore in Q2FY13, largely due to an increase in the high margin liquid division segment and a change in the hedging strategy. The PAT was down by 43.9% YoY to Rs 20.7 crore compared to Rs 36.9 crore, due to a higher other income of Rs 109.9 crore, which includes interest income of Rs 58.4 crore. In FY13, due to exotic option contracts Aegis had a gross debt of Rs 2,707 crore with cash and equivalents of Rs 2,514 crore, but the unwinding of the option contracts brought debt to normal levels of Rs 238 crore in H1FY14. Liquid Division: The Liquid division revenue at Rs 34 crore is the highest quarterly revenue clocked by Aegis. The increase in revenue was led by the increase in capacity due to de-bottlenecking at the Mumbai facility and a change in the liquid mix. The EDITDA came in at Rs 22.5 crore with a margin of 66.2%, mainly on accounts of a change in the liquid mix, which now has a higher share of specialty chemicals. With the expansion plan in place at the Haldia and Pipavav facilities and incremental utilization at the Kochi facility (fire fighting mechanism issue resolved by the port authorities), Aegis is looking at higher revenues from this division over the forecast period. At the CMP of Rs 142, Aegis is trading at 6.5x and 5.5x it estimated earnings for FY14E and FY15E, respectively, and we recommend a BUY, with the target price of Rs 215 representing a potential upside of ~52% over a period of 18 months.

Dolat Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on Sun Pharma CMP: Rs. 597

Target Rs. 664

Sun Pharma (SUNP) revenues grew 57.9% YoY to Rs 42.1bn driven by robust growth in US formulations (94.6% YoY) and domestic formulations (17.2% YoY). US formulations grew by 94.6% YoY at Rs 25.9bn (Rs 13.3bn in Q2FY13). Growth was primarily led by gPrandin (180 days exclusivity), Doxycycline, Lipodox and other niche products. Taro registered a growth of 27.5% YoY at USD 205.3mn, led by increase in product volumes. SUNP continued to show better than expected sales growth in URL and DUSA. Domestic formulations registered better-than-estimated sales at Rs 9.5bn, up 17.2% YoY, despite loss of pioglitazone sales and NLEM policy. The company expects to show better than industry growth in FY14E. EBITDA margins were flattish at 43.8% (44.1% in Q2FY13), primarily on account of higher sales from low margin products in the US market. R&D spend for the quarter was at 5.3% and is expected to be in the 6-8% range on the back of clinical development of complex injectables & focus on niche products. Tax rate stood at 15% against 17.3% in Q2FY13. Consequently, adjusted PAT grew by 50.8% YoY to Rs 13.6bn. Valuation: We expect SUNP to post revenue CAGR of 22.3% and PAT CAGR of 23.8% over FY13-15E on the back of: 1) Superior revenue mix; 2) Domestic market growth rate to be higher than the market @ 18%; 3) Higher R&D expenditure productivity 4) Competition in Taro products leading to price normalization; 5) Increased visibility in US on account of upsides from URL and DUSA acquisitions. At CMP, the stock trades at 26.8x FY14E & 22.6x FY15E earnings. We maintain ‘Accumulate’ with a revised target price of Rs 664.

Snooping row: BJP terms probe demand ‘politically motivated’ N

EW DELHI: BJP yesterday rejected the demand for a probe into the alleged illegal snooping of a woman in Gujarat at the behest of Narendra Modi saying it was "politically motivated" and the protection was sought by the person concerned and her father. "The woman concerned and her father are saying that the security was provided on their request. They are not complaining, but Con Amit Shah gress is concerned about this. "This shows there is more political interest in the subject, rather than facts," Arun Jaitley said here. "The basis of the case is in itself wrong. Security and protection is not snooping," added Jaitley. Questioning the motive of Congress, Jaitley said, "Has this (Congress) government ordered probe into how things were done in other cases? When the woman and her father herself are saying that this was the protection given to them at their own request for some specified reasons, then where is the question of probe in this." In an apparent reference to IPS officer G.L. Singhal recording his conversations with former home minister of Gujarat Amit Shah, Jaitley said "no one is concerned about violations of laws in that case." GAGANGIRI CO-OP HSG SOC LTD. IN BRIEF Algeria, Ghana complete Africa’s flag Arsiwala to lead State Girls team in Ronaldo’s ‘trick helps Portugal book berth to Brazil, France also make it bearers for World Cup football Nationals ABUJA: Algeria and Ghana completed the five African qualifiers for next year’s World Cup, joining Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast, who all qualified at the weekend. This quintet is identical to Africa’s ambassadors at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Algeria did just enough to book their ticket to their fourth World Cup by beating Burkina Faso 1-0 to go through on the away goals’ rule after the first game ended 3-2 in favour of the west Africans. It needed a scrambled effort yesterday in the 49th minute by skipper Madjid Bougherra for Algeria to book their flight to Brazil next year. Despite losing 2-1 in Cairo, the Black Stars of Ghana qualified for a third successive World Cup, 7-3 on aggregate. Egypt could not overcome the 6-1 humiliation they suffered at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi last month. The Pharaohs, who last appeared at the World Cup in 1990, scored through Amr Zaki and Mohamed Gedo in either half, before substitute KevinPrince Boateng pulled a goal back for Ghana late on. It was a huge disappointment for the seven-time African champs.

TRIUMPHANT CRY: Cristiano Ronaldo reacts with joy after scoring.

P

ARIS: An electric performance by France and a hattrick by Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal lifted the two European football heavyweights across the line in the race to qualify for next year’s World Cup. A gripping conclusion to European qualifying yesterday also saw Croatia and Greece secure their passages to the 2014 finals in Brazil.

France took on Ukraine at a tense Stade de France, the scene of the hosts’ 1998 World Cup win, with their backs to the wall after last week’s 2-0 first leg defeat in Kiev. But Les Bleus banished the blues that had descended on their supporters with a remarkable show of resolve. Didier Deschamps’ men took the lead midway through the first half through Mamadou Sakho

and levelled the tie on aggregate when Karim Benzema netted from an offside position on 34 minutes. That strike came shortly after the Real Madrid man had seen a perfectly good goal disallowed, and the controversy continued as Ukraine defender Yevhen Kacheridi was sent off early in the second period. France made their one-man advantage count as an Oleg Gusev own-goal put them ahead in the tie for the first time in the 72nd minute and they saw out the rest of the game to win 3-2 on aggregate. An ecstatic Benzema said: “We qualified in style. The match was tough, we had to turn the situation around - we did it. We had pressure, of course, but we never doubted ourselves - I’m extremely proud. You can see when the fans are superb and behind us like this evening we can raise our game.” Deschamps said, “Four days ago, we were in a bad position but the players were fantastic tonight. I didn’t have doubts but we played a huge match and this qualification is very important for French football. It’s a bit of a tradition that when French teams have their backs against the wall, they perform and we had a lot of heart and determination today.

Sparsh Pherwani of Khar Gymkhana overcame Ali Babul 55-50, 61-20 in the play-off to finish third. Jaiveer Dhingra of PJ Hindu Gymkhana was the toast of the day when he fired a sensational break of 183 while prevailing over Elphinstone Cricket Club’s Rayyan Razmi 455-124 for his second win in the elite junior billiards round robin.

WONDERBOY: Prithvi Shaw on his way out to bat for Rizvi Springfield befor his marathon innings of 546 runs against St. Francis D’Assisi at the Azad Maidan. [Inset] Prithvi and his father Pankaj Shaw share a light moment after the end of play.

SUPERB SHAWDOWN

14-year-old Prithvi Shaw of Rizvi Springfield smashes 546 runs to be the third highest scorer in school cricket

By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: It was a day for a young lad from Rizvi Springfield, Prithvi Shaw to inscribe his name in the record books by becoming the third highest scorer in the cricketing world by smashing a superb 546 runs of only 330 balls against St Francis D’Assisi during the Elite Group match of the Haris Shield cricket tournament at the Azad Maidan on Wednesday. What was amazing is the 14year-old, played the entire knock with ease and poise and creamed the bowlers out of the park. Shaw stood his ground for a marathon six hours during his Herculean knock which included a staggering 85 boundaries and five hits over the fence and all emanated from proper cricketing shots. Shaw, play every ball on its merit which followed the directions of coach Raju Pathak sitting in the tent. However, as the saying goes, ‘Fortune favours the brave’ as Shaw made the most of 16 dropped chances in total. Shaw said. “They dropped some catches. It wasn’t easy for them out there. Some of them were diving catches, so it wasn’t easy. There were all difficult chances.” Resuming on his overnight score of 257, Shaw said he went to the field with a blank mind, not worrying and neither trying to accomplish any record. He said he

had told all his teammates not to remind him about his score as he just wanted to keep on piling on the runs. He knew that his anxiety levels would creep up when he was reaching the 500. However, not withstanding the instructions, his teammates told him he was a shot away from scoring 500 runs. “I didn’t know when I was in the 490’s because I told my teammates not to tell me my score as I was going well and I wanted to play my natural game. My teammates then told me I reached by 500. They cheered for me,” said Shaw. Shaw said what worked for him was the clear instructions from his coach. “Today I was having no plans and I was blank in my mind. My coach just told me to play how I want to. I was just concentrating with the singles and the twos and waiting for the loose balls.” Shaw went on to surpass his fellow teammate of Springfield, Armaan Jaffer who was 13 years

when he earned the record of the third highest scorer in school cricket. Shaw in his stay at the wicket, was involved in a partnership of 619 runs [404 balls] with Satyalash Jain who scored a rapid 164 runs of only 62 balls which included 14 fours and a six to enable their team reach a mammoth score at the end of the day of 991 all out. “He was batting very well and gave me all the support I needed,” said Shaw. They missed surpassing Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s 664run partnership by 45 runs. Shaw started playing cricket as early as four, and was enrolled in a cricket academy in Virar under Santosh Pingulkar. Shaw said it was his father’s friend who suggested that Prithvi should be enrolled in a coaching camp. “When I was four, I started my cricket. My father didn’t know about cricket, but one of my father’s friend told him to take me to a coaching camp. It was based in Virar. I earlier used to stay in Virar and I was coached by Santosh Pingulkar.” Shaw had scored a century [109 runs] playing in the Kanga League A division match for Parel Sporting against Muslim United Sports Club. Shaw was invited earlier this year to the Bradfield College and the Julian Wood Cricket Academy in England to participate in a cricket and per-

Aussies take aim at England’s bid for history

B

RISBANE: Australia hope their impregnable record at the Gabba will help them seize early momentum as they bid to stop England completing their best Ashes run in 123 years from today. Michael Clarke's team went down 3-0 just three months ago in England, leaving them in danger of losing four Ashes series in a row -- a fate they have not suffered since 1890. However, Australia now appear more settled and they will also take heart from their performances at Brisbane's Gabba ground, where they are unbeaten in a quarter of a century. Australia have not lost on the famously fast, bouncy pitch since 1988, against a Viv Richards-led West Indies, and England's last win there was under Mike Gatting in 1986. While history favours the hosts, a Brisbane victory by Alastair Cook's England would deal psychological damage to a team trying to rebuild after a long slump. However Australia, strengthening under coach Darren Lehmann, believe they may now be ready to end England's run of wins in 2009, 2010-2011 and earlier this year. England's 3-1 victory in 2010-2011 was their first in Australia for 24 years, pointing to a much tighter contest than the JulyAugust Tests. England did not reach 400 in the last series, yet mastered the Australians with inspired spells in the key moments at Trent Bridge, Lord's, ChesterLe-Street and The Oval. All-rounder Shane Watson, who must overcome a hamstring injury to play in the first Test, believes Australia need test the endurance of England's four-man bowling attack. "That is the way we are going to win the Ashes," Watson said.

sonality development program for two months. Incidentally, he received his reward from the Mumbai Cricket Association who announced him as the skipper of their under 16 team to play in the Vijay Merchant Trophy League starting next month.

SPARE A THOUGHT FOR THE OPPOSITION While the city media were awarding accolades to Shaw and his team, rival captain Keval Shah said, “We have our batting to come. There is one more day. We will find an answer,” said Shah. He said that the entire team was amazed at Shaw’s batting brilliance but said that it was their own team’s fault that allowed the Springfield batsman to score 546 runs. “We had 16 dropped chances. Our boys were all over the field. We all were frustrated and that was bound to happen with an innings like this. He batted really well. We all learned a lot here and have a lot to take from an innings like this. We need to play responsible cricket from now on,” said Shah. Brief Scores: St. Francis D’Assisi (Borivali) 92 all out (Azim Salim Shaikh 4 for 20, Sidak Guruinder Singh 4 for 26) trail Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) 991 all out (Prithvi Shaw 546, Satyalash Jain 164; Varun Abhyankar 5/212) by 809 runs.

"As a batting unit we are going to bat for a long period of time, especially in the first couple of Tests. We will see where they are at physically and mentally. That is one of our biggest goals. "We have no doubt they will keep coming but at what level? We haven't been able to challenge that level. Keep them coming back, get them fatigued and try to keep them that way as well. Don't let them off by batting badly and getting a rest." England are yet to decide on their third seamer to supplement James Anderson and Stuart Broad, but Chris Tremlett, a success on the last Ashes tour here, looks likely to play along with penetrating offspinner Graeme Swann. The tourists also have injury concerns, with first-choice wicketkeeper Matt Prior nursing a calf strain and star batsman Kevin Pietersen needing a cortisone injection for a troublesome knee ahead of his 100th Test.

OCHI: After demolishing the West Indies in Sachin Tendulkar’s emotionally draining farewell Test series, the Indian cricket team will look to extend its supremacy in the ODIs as well when the two sides face off in a three-match series starting here tomorrow. The 2-0 whitewash against the Caribbean outfit was the perfect send off for the legendary Tendulkar, who called it quits after serving Indian cricket for nearly a quarter of a century. The emotional curtain call left everyone, including the man of the moment, in tears even taking the focus away from the cricket that was played. The epic farewell is now behind them and the Indians would try and ensure that it is just cricket that is talked about now. The home side already deserves credit for keeping itself focussed on the game in the Tests despite the frenzy surrounding Tendulkar’s retirement. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men were clinical, to say the least, in the way they went about their business in the Test series, taking full advantage of the West Indians’ shabby show to wrap up two Tests in a matter of five days.

Last chance for Anand to defend title in World Chess Championship

C

HENNAI: With four games to go, defending champion Viswanathan Anand will probably have one last chance in the ninth game to defend his title against challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the ongoing World Chess Championship here tomorrow. With eight games gone, Anand is down but still not out. It’s a twogame deficit for the Indian ace and the ninth game would decide the course of the match as Anand plays white tomorrow. Carlsen has been the pick between the two and he appears completely relaxed with his 5-3 lead. It’s a now or never situation for Anand as he has just two white games left. A victory in the ninth game will reduce the deficit to just one point and can unsettle Carlsen who is playing his first serious match. After four draws and two losses, the situation has brewed up before Anand can go for his comeback act. The last two games were the easiest draws. The eighth game was over in just under 75 minutes, giving the impression that Carlsen is also a contented man. Chess pundits had predicted that Anand will try to claw his way back in the match soon after the sixth game loss but the composure on Anand’s face tells a different story.

The Indians start firm favourites in the shorter format too with a batting line-up, which is in intimidatingly good form. Combining Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dahawn in the opening slots has proved to be a masterstroke so far with both scoring heavily in India’s last ODI assignment — the seven-match series against Australia. In fact, Rohit joined the all-Indian club of ODI double-centurions in the last match of that series, smashing a 158-ball 209, which included a record 16 sixes. At number three, India has another aggressor in Virat Kohli, who would be keen to carry on with the fine form. The middleorder has a solid look to it with the likes of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni himself.Of these, Yuvraj would be keen to make his mark after a rather extended ordinary run with the bat. In the bowling department, Mohammed Shami would be the one to watch out for as he seeks to be India’s newest pace hope after the steady decline of senior pro Zaheer Khan, who has been denied a central contract by the BCCI this year. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohit Sharma, an IPL find, and Jaydev Unadkat complete the pace

quartet for India with R Ashwin and Amit Mishra manning the spin department. Ravindra Jadeja will return to the side after missing the Tests due to a shoulder niggle. For the West Indies, the challenge could not have been bigger after the Test mauling. Darren Sammy would make way for allrounder Dwayne Bravo as captain of the side and the visitors would hope to restore some of the lost pride by coming good in the shorter format. The one man who would hold the key to their fortunes and provide much-needed spark is without doubt the dashing Chris Gayle. Gayle had a nightmarish outing in the Tests and was hardly noticeable. The big-hitting batsman would hope to make his presence felt in the ODIs. A lot would also be expected from the likes of Kieran Powell, Narsingh Deonarine, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin. Given that batting was one area which significantly let the team down during the Tests, the West Indians would do well to sort it out to avoid another thrashing.

OCHI: It would be a mistake to believe that India will enjoy an upper hand against the West Indies in the One-day series just because the Caribbean side has lost the Test series, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. India had won the series 2-0 but Dhoni said it was not an easy task to get that scoreline and the ODI format may actually suit the West Indies cricketers. “The West Indies are a good team. You may say that the Test matches got over on the third day itself and it was easy but it was not. There were situations where we were under pressure and then we had to build a partnership. It was not an easy series as the scorecard suggest. ODI is a different squad “It is important that we take the and this may be suiting them as far as 50-50 overs match,” Dhoni said match with a right frame of mind at the pre-match press conference. and not thinking about whether

the opposition played well or not.” Most of the matches in the ODI series against Australia were high score affairs. Asked if similar scores can be seen in the threematch series against the West Indies, Dhoni said it cannot be predicted at this stage. “It all depends on how the wicket here is going to behave. Before the start it is not easy to say what will be the good score to win a match. We will see how the wicket behaves and then we plan and may be 260 or 280 could be a good score if it becomes flat. The dew factor has also to be taken and then an average of 230 or 240 could be an ideal score.” Dhoni said his players have worked hard on bowling in death overs and hoped that will show on the field gradually.

Saina wins but Kashyap, Sindhu crash out of Hong Kong Open H

ONG KONG: Saina Nehwal advanced to the second round with an easy win but it turned out to be a disappointing day for the Indians overall as Parupalli Kashyap and P V Sindhu failed to cross the first hurdle in the Hong Kong Super Series here today. Looking for her first title of the season, world number seven Saina didn’t break much sweat as she outplayed Indonesia’s Bellaetrix Manuputty 21-14 21-16 in a 34-minute women’s singles match. The 23-year-old Indian will next

take on Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk tomorrow. However, it was curtains for Sindhu and Kashyap in the opening round of the USD 350,000 event, the last Super Series of the season. World number 10 Sindhu lost 16-21 17-21 to second seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in another women’s singles match, while Kashyap suffered a 14-21 1021 defeat at the hands of China’s Zhengming Wang in men’s singles competition. Rising shuttler K Srikanth also crashed out in the

opening round of men’s singles after going down 18-21 14-21 to world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. India’s men’s doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar, too, suffered a similar fate as the duo lost 18-21 19-21 to top seeded Indonesian combo of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. Another Indian pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy B were also send packing 9-21 15-21 by Russian pair of Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov in a 26-minute match.

NEW DELHI: Hockey India today appointed former Olympic gold-medallist V Bhaskaran as a coach of the men’s national team to work under the recentlyappointed chief coach Terry Walsh. “Bhaskaran has joined the training camp of the senior men’s hockey team at SAI Centre, Bhopal for preparations of the FIH World League Finals in Delhi in January 2014 and the FIH World Cup to be held in The Netherlands next year,” the HI said in a statement. HI Secretary General Narinder Batra felt Bhaskaran’s experience will come in handy for the team. Bhaskaran has coached the team several times, the last time at the 2006 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Monchengladbach.

Tendulkar arrives in Mussoorie after retirement

DEHRADUN: Sachin Tendulkar, who announced his retirement from the international cricket, today arrived in Mussoorie, about 20 kms from here, to spend a quiet vacation with his family. The legendary batsman, accompanied by wife Anjali, headed straight for the hill station soon after landing at Jollygrant Airport in a chartered plane here, airport authority officials said. Tendulkar would be staying at a family friend and business partner Sanjay Narang’s hotel in Mussoorie. Tendulkar had spent a few days in Mussoorie last year also after announcing his retirement from the ODI cricket. The master blaster used to visit this hill station along with his family to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

IOC to discuss return of baseball

TOKYO: The International Olympic Committee will discuss a proposal by Japan and other countries to reinstate baseball and softball in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, its new chief said today. “I’m personally open for more flexibility in the programme of the Olympic Games,” said Thomas Bach, who succeeded Jacques Rogge as IOC president in September. “But I still have to see what my colleagues in the IOC are thinking about this. There must also be consultations with the international federation, he said, referring to the World Baseball and Softball Confederation.”reree
