ome pockets in Western Suburbs will face water cut on Thursday and Friday as the civic body is checking feasibility of alternate water supply to western suburb since the underground water tunnel is punctured due to bore well digging. Goregaon (East and West) and Malad (East and West) will face 25 per cent water cut during Thursday midnight to Friday midnight. There are chances of low supply Borivli too. Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Jalota said, “We are trying to work out alternate water supply to western suburb, if it works then we will start actual repair of under ground tunnel.” He added, “We have all the necessary technology and skilled man power required for repair of underground tunnel. First priority is that people should get water during the repair period.” The civic body requested citizens to store water and use it judiciously during the water cut.
Cabinet nod for `1,444 crore water supply project
Meanwhile the state cabinet yesterday approved a Rs.1,444 crore project for supply of water in the rural areas. The project, called ‘Jalsurajya -2’, will be implemented in cooperation with the World Bank, which will bear 70 per cent of the project cost. Meanwhile in another development, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced that the government has decided to allot 7,844 taxi permits, cancelled earlier, to the cab operators through bidding. Of these, 100 permits will be reserved for women taxi drivers, an official told PTI.

These are the words of Israeli author Shifra Horn who spoke for the first time on writing about conflict zones and cultural context at the TATA Literature Live festival last week. She had a quick chat with Claudelle Monis about her work, her love for India and working with Jews across the world.
t is not often that you come across a foreigner who ventures into Chor Bazaar alone on her second visit to India. Israeli author Shifra Horn, however, did just that when she zipped in and out of the country to participate in the TATA Literature Live festival held in Mumbai last week. “I’m adventurous like that. I’m actually sad though, that I didn’t have the time to go into the slums. I love knowing a city by its people, markets and bookstores,” she says with a smile. But wasn’t she worried about being alone in an area rarely visited by middle class Mumbaikars? “Not really,” she says, “I’m quite a loner. I like exploring by myself and feeling the place I’m visiting.” It is this depiction of local life that Horn replicates in her books about people and places across the world, from Portugal to Japan. “I need to live in a place for a considerable amount of time to be able to write about it with authenticity. Before I wrote my novel ‘Shalom Japan’ I lived there for five years. I need to interact with people and learn about cultures before I can even consider writing about a country”, says Horn. She however, explains why she hasn’t written about India yet. “I fell
in love with India when I was 11 years old and started reading a book called ‘India’ by Ezriel Carlebach. I still consider it to be my Bible to the country, but I honestly feel that you have to be a genius to write about India. It is such a diverse country, that what applies to one locality almost never applies to another. I think I will have to live here for at least 10 years before I can start writing about it”. Horn’s work deals with ordinary men and women whose lives are set against the backdrop of wars and are ultimately determined by them or by other conflict. Was her decision to make war a backdrop to her stories,
intentional? “No literature or art can function without conflict. There must be some sort of conflict, either between father and son, or mother and daughter, or even between two countries for a book to make sense. I use war as a conflict to motivate my characters and help them evolve”, she says. When talking about writing in a cultural context, Horn doesn’t really agree with the idea that an outsider cannot write about another country with authenticity. She says, “I think outsiders can write about another country through a different perspective and still retain the authenticity demanded of them. Look at ‘India’ by Carlebach. I have never seen a book more authentic than this one about the country.” She does however agree that stereotypes can creep into narratives. “Yes, stereotypes may exist in literature,” she says, “but then again, who can escape them? And everyone knows that all stereotypes are not true. So even if they do creep in, it should be alright.” Considering Horn is an Anthropologist, apart from being a writer, she works extensively with the Jewish community across the world, particularly the oppressed. Has she
ever, we asked her, interacted with the Menashe Jews who live in the North Eastern part of India who are believed by some to be one of the ten lost tribes of Israel scattered by the Assyrians in the 7th century BC? “I heard of the Menashe Jews long before they became famous, and was interested in learning more about them. However, the World Union of Jewish Students that was already working with them, advised me against visiting the territory because of political instability in the region. That’s how my research on them has reached a standstill”, she says. When asked about her opinion of the Indian perception of Israelis in India, as perpetuated through literature and the media, she says, “I think the approach to Israeli soldiers in Goa is a little misinformed. What would you like to do after you finish three straight years in army service? It’s understandable that these boys need to unwind, and what better place to do so than the beach. Yes, they might move around in groups and be vocal, but that is what they’re used to doing in the army. My son has been to Goa after his stint in the army, and loved every bit of it, and as I’ve said before, so do I.”

The Sri Lanka-born actress along with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA) members requested Mayor Sunil Prabhu to stop cruelty against horses used to drive traditional Victoria – a horse cart. The Standing Committee meeting was wrapped in 30 minutes instead of the usual two to three hours. One of the politicians admitted that most of the members were in the Mayor’s antechambers. The mayor’s office was stormed for a few minutes by media people, politicians and civic workers. Some members went up to the extent of standing up on chairs to get pictures of the actress. Prabhu personally requested people to move out for a few minutes so that his staff could orgranise a meeting with her. Jacqueline said, “Unhealthy and ill horses are deprived of medical treatment and forced to carry Victoria. These horses don’t get proper food and water.” She requested the Mayor to stop Victoria carriages in the city. We have visited several times, admittedly mostly on work, but each time there has been more to see, and more important, more to experience. All this without even visiting the Burj – yet. But it is the pictures that Dubai makes that we really like, hence this item and an invitation to look at the city by night, blazing with light and floating on its own visions, still a miracle fairy tale that might yet prove a mirage, vanishing one day in a massive desert storm. he National and State Women’s Commission should upload status of cases handled by it on its website, demanded state BJP vice-president Dr Medha Somaiya. Speaking to newspersons here yesterday she demanded that the womens commission should give details of the cases lodged with it, their status and details of funds utilisation by it. She slammed the state government for failing to nominate chairperson for the state womens commission, a post which has been lying vacant since 2009. She demanded that the womens commission should take up the problems of harassment, cases of atrocities, equal pay and other issues faced by women in unorganised sector. Somaiya stated that there is no proper coordination between the working of the national and state womens commission. She called upon both the womens commission to give adequate publicity to women oriented welfare schemes, rehabilitation schemes and funds. two-day-old baby boy was found outside a building compound in Panvel City in the early hours of Wednesday. The infant was discovered wrapped in a cotton cloth outside Pal Castle building at 6 am, by Sachin Patil, a passerby. As soon he heard the baby crying, Patil picked up the child and asked the building watchman if he had seen anyone leaving the child behind, to which the watchman replied that he had not. Patil then took the baby to the Panvel City police station and registered a case against an unidentified person. Police officers then called a team of doctors from the Panvel Grahmin Hospital who informed them that the child is just two days old and has suffered several leg injuries. Tawde claimed that a scam of Rs. 4,867 crore has been detected in the import of coal. He said that the state power utilities refuse to take coal from state owned western coal fields limited on the grounds that it was of inferior quality, and instead approved the purchase of coal from private parties. The opposition leader pointed out that even the central power appellate authority APTEL had held Mahagenco guilty of purchasing poor quality coal. Tawde further disclosed that in order to increase power generation from inferior quality coal, the power utility resorted to buying Rs. 3,286 crore worth of furnace oil.

a driver for a local corporator. He was caught red handed by the victim’s mother while he indulged in unnatural sexual acts with the child. Taking the decision, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan approved massive reduction in the minimum auction price for the licenses. While distributing these licenses each of the tender applicants can bid for minimum of 100 and maximum of 2,500 licenses. On January 20, 2010 the state government had decided to give 4,000 licenses to Phone Fleet taxis. After which on August 14 this year the government through notification had invited objections and suggestions. Commensurate with that the final guidelines are being framed, states a government press release issued here yesterday.

Manifestos out: All set for battle for Delhi W
HILE Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal made several points and promises in his party’s election manifesto, Delhi’s Congress Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit presented the party’s manifesto which talked about progress on all fronts. She said the Congress was laying emphasis on infrastructural development: The party would build doubledecker flyovers in Delhi. And she attacked AAP’s Kejriwal and said he makes points in the manifesto but no solutions. The Congress will never stop making progress. She claimed that the manifesto was based on practical issues. The AAP’s manifesto made several promises to the citizens and gave the assurance that within a short time, many promises would be implemented. A promise which is likely to cause a good impact is the promise to slash the electrical bill of citizens by 50 per cent. The high cost electricity has been causing a great deal of unrest in Delhi. The big, pertinent question is whether Kejriwal will really be able to reduce the cost. Just this one support from APP is likely to get a lot of support to the party. Arvind Kejriwal has other plans for development in Delhi: He wants the city police to be under the state government and that the Centre should have no control over it. This promise is likely to draw a great deal of support to AAP. The manifesto seeks to change the existing system. The manifesto says AAP will get the Janlokpal Bill passed by Parliament. The manifesto also says it will crackdown on several corrupt bodies including the tanker mafia. The manifesto of the AAP is more impressive than that of the Congress. Sheila Dikshit appears to be overconfident and she seems to underestimate AAP’s capacity to win the Delhi elections.

T is that time of year in Delhi when everyone goes to weddings almost every day. The streets are filled with the sound of Bollywood songs as wedding processions with grooms on white horses went their way to wedding venues in 'farm houses' on the edge of the city. Since I live on the edge of the city I am surrounded by streets that seem dedicated only to band, baja, baraat. All night I hear the sound of celebrations and firecrackers from my bedroom window. I do not mind this much because the sounds add joyousness and festivity to increasingly cold winter nights. And, I myself have been embroiled in recent days in a family wedding that was so traditional that every ceremony took place on a different day and there were many ceremonies. But, this is Delhi and politics is mixed up even with celebration so during these ceremonies I found myself talking more about politics than about the bride and groom. The latest political game in town is a game of numbers. How many seats do you give Congress? How many more seats do you think the BJP will get with Modi? How many seats are you giving a third front?

The next day at the lunch party held after the Anand Kaarij, the political chitchat continued. I found myself in conversation with a young Lok Sabha MP and I asked him what he
thought the mood was among Congress MPs at the moment and this is what he said. “They are despondent. They know that chances of a UPA-III are dim but what they all seem to be working towards now is ensuring that Modi doesn't become prime minister. They are prepared to go to any lengths to make sure that he doesn't get to Delhi.” I found the observation particularly astute because it is what I have personally observed whenever I have come back to Delhi after a short absence. This time I returned after three weeks and was astounded to find how much more gloom there is in Congress ranks and how much more determination to defeat Modi. It is not the BJP that is seen as a threat, it is Modi himself, and this has intensified be-

Advani actually praised this scheme at the United Nations last year without once examining if the thousands of crore rupees poured into it could not have been better spent on creating real jobs in the villages. But, I digress so let us return to the numbers game that is currently being played in Delhi's corridors of power.

You are locked into prison. You suffer enough and you don't know how to handle your suffering. We inflict suffering on our inmates and you make decision worse. Hell is created by that kind of practice. As a corrections officer sitting there, why don't you use your time to practice looking deeply? Is there anything you can do in order to help these people to suffer less? Is it possible for inmates in a prison to practice so that they can suffer less? So they can help each other in the practice of bringing hope and joy in their life in prison? Of course, the answer is positive. I have visited prisons and spent

Bharat ‘Ratna’ or not? WITH the hysteria being generated around Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, one can perhaps pardon the general public for getting carried away by the hoopla encouraged by the media. But how does one account for our political leaders playing to the public gallery and attempting to cash in on Tendulkar’s popularity? There is no question that Tendulkar is an extremely gifted cricketer, but that does not qualify him for being considered for the nation’s highest civilian honour. We need to put his achievements in perspective. The Bharat Ratna is conferred on Indian citizens who have a record not only of extraordinary achievement but have rendered exemplary public service. The principal beneficiary of Tendulkar’s prowess has been Tendulkar himself. He has earned hundreds of crores, ironically even more from product endorsements than from his cricketing skills. There is not even the pretence of public service. By all means, shower honours on an extraordinary sportsman, but do not put him in the same category as Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and J.R.D. Thus the question arises as to why rrstirctions should be placed on opinion polls which have been in force for such a long time. It is very simple to know and understand why the Congress party wants them banned. Elections are approaching and thus the aam admi will calculate the performances and achievements of the ruling Congress party. Congress, on the other hand, should consider themselves extremely lucky to hold to those projections, heave a sigh of relief, feel happy and welcome many more series of opinion polls to gain the impression for themselves that there are people to hint that their performance is not as worse as it is made out to be. hile getting married is stressful for the groom-to-be as well, brides-to-be have a tougher time because they have so many things to see to — from the glow of her skin and hideous surprise acne to finding finery for various occasions and avoiding weight gain. Then there are dark circles, anxiety and mood swings. Plus, she’s moving out of the house that she grew up in. You cannot help a bride remain calm or tell her how to plan her wedding unless you’ve been in her shoes. So, we did just that — asked women in the city who have been there, done that. They tell you how to avoid losing it before D-day arrives and one thing that they wish they had done differently on their wedding day.
Wedding season is here and so are nervous brides-to-be, stressed with the task of planning their perfect wedding. To ease the tension, the Woman’s World team asked married women across the city to share their pearls of wisdom about what brides-to-be should keep in mind while planning for their big day

This way, your wedding will turn out to be a fun party!” she says. One thing I wish I had done differently: We asked the pandit to keep the ceremony short, but it still went on forever! Is your office in a safe location? a) No, it’s quite an unsafe area. b) The entrance is a little questionable, but the office itself is fine. c) It’s a safe, secure building and area. Mostly As Your office is definitely not woman friendly and unfortunately, you seem to have accepted it as part of your working life. There’s no shame in asking for extra benefits and it’s actually better to be safe rather than sorry, especially in a city like Mumbai. Making your own way home late at night and constantly feeling unsafe is not worth it, even for the sake of your career. Children’s rooms are great even for working fathers and bathrooms are just a basic
necessity! Speak up or find some place safer and more woman friendly to work.

Instead, drink cool drinks (avoid anything fizzy) and juices to help you feel less dehydrated. This in turn will help with your hot flashes.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Wednesday (November 20, 2013) a net 80.45 points (1.30%) and closed at the 6122 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 6186 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 12.30 p.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6204 points level at 12.46 p.m. It then turned into a range bound movement until 2.10 p.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6106 points level at 3.29 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 97 points and closed below the psychologically important 6150 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were losers, while just 4 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices barring metal closed in the red. Substantial selling was seen in banking and consumer durables stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.98%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 661 were gainers, 724 were losers and 75 remained unchanged.

Both these indicate a negative bias. H owever, the index is still above its 5 and 2 00 days moving averages and both the averages are risi ng. Further, de spite yesterday s harp decline the velocity parameters continue to remain neutrally trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 5-day average at the 6112 point’s level.

Amara Raja Batteries (ARBL) reported its Q2FY14 results that were ahead of our estimates on the margins and bottomline front. Revenues at ~Rs 807 crore (higher ~12% YoY) were lower than estimates on lower sales in the home UPS segment due to weak summer/good monsoon. EBITDA margins at 17.6% (~132 bps QoQ increase) came at a 15 quarter high due to a) decline in share of low margin home UPS segment, b) consecutive price hikes in the last two quarters, c) possible impact of low cost inventory and d) decline in other expenses. Subsequently, PAT at ~Rs 95 crore was significantly higher than expected. We remain positive on the long-term growth prospects of the auto replacement segment feel ARBL will be well placed. ARBL’s performance has continued to be impressive even as industry leader Exide has struggled to maintain profitability. With the company’s consistent performance, strong return ratios, visibility on earnings and strong balance sheet, we believe ARBL’s multiples deserve an upward revision. We, thus, raise our multiple to 14x FY15E EPS, higher than Exide (13x) and recommend BUY with a target price of Rs 380.

In Q2FY14, Aegis Logistics (Aegis) reported numbers in line with our expectations. The revenue was up by 77.3% YoY to Rs 1,562.9 crore led by a record revenue from the liquid division and an increase in the LPG gas sourcing volumes. On a comparative basis, profit from operations was at Rs 27.8 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 48.9 crore in Q2FY13, largely due to an increase in the high margin liquid division segment and a change in the hedging strategy. The PAT was down by 43.9% YoY to Rs 20.7 crore compared to Rs 36.9 crore, due to a higher other income of Rs 109.9 crore, which includes interest income of Rs 58.4 crore. In FY13, due to exotic option contracts Aegis had a gross debt of Rs 2,707 crore with cash and equivalents of Rs 2,514 crore, but the unwinding of the option contracts brought debt to normal levels of Rs 238 crore in H1FY14. Liquid Division: The Liquid division revenue at Rs 34 crore is the highest quarterly revenue clocked by Aegis. The increase in revenue was led by the increase in capacity due to de-bottlenecking at the Mumbai facility and a change in the liquid mix. The EDITDA came in at Rs 22.5 crore with a margin of 66.2%, mainly on accounts of a change in the liquid mix, which now has a higher share of specialty chemicals. With the expansion plan in place at the Haldia and Pipavav facilities and incremental utilization at the Kochi facility (fire fighting mechanism issue resolved by the port authorities), Aegis is looking at higher revenues from this division over the forecast period. At the CMP of Rs 142, Aegis is trading at 6.5x and 5.5x it estimated earnings for FY14E and FY15E, respectively, and we recommend a BUY, with the target price of Rs 215 representing a potential upside of ~52% over a period of 18 months.

Sun Pharma (SUNP) revenues grew 57.9% YoY to Rs 42.1bn driven by robust growth in US formulations (94.6% YoY) and domestic formulations (17.2% YoY). US formulations grew by 94.6% YoY at Rs 25.9bn (Rs 13.3bn in Q2FY13). Growth was primarily led by gPrandin (180 days exclusivity), Doxycycline, Lipodox and other niche products. Taro registered a growth of 27.5% YoY at USD 205.3mn, led by increase in product volumes. SUNP continued to show better than expected sales growth in URL and DUSA. Domestic formulations registered better-than-estimated sales at Rs 9.5bn, up 17.2% YoY, despite loss of pioglitazone sales and NLEM policy. The company expects to show better than industry growth in FY14E. EBITDA margins were flattish at 43.8% (44.1% in Q2FY13), primarily on account of higher sales from low margin products in the US market. R&D spend for the quarter was at 5.3% and is expected to be in the 6-8% range on the back of clinical development of complex injectables & focus on niche products. Tax rate stood at 15% against 17.3% in Q2FY13. Consequently, adjusted PAT grew by 50.8% YoY to Rs 13.6bn. Valuation: We expect SUNP to post revenue CAGR of 22.3% and PAT CAGR of 23.8% over FY13-15E on the back of: 1) Superior revenue mix; 2) Domestic market growth rate to be higher than the market @ 18%; 3) Higher R&D expenditure productivity 4) Competition in Taro products leading to price normalization; 5) Increased visibility in US on account of upsides from URL and DUSA acquisitions. At CMP, the stock trades at 26.8x FY14E & 22.6x FY15E earnings. We maintain ‘Accumulate’ with a revised target price of Rs 664.

MUMBAI: Mumbai’s 15-yearold Aryan Goveas is the only Indian player from his age group, 16 and under, to be selected into the Asian ITF Touring Team, which will compete in a series of Regional Junior ITF (Under18) tournaments in January 2014. The Team is part of the ITF Development Programme, which is financed by the ITF and the Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF). Aryan, who began playing on the ITF (Under-18) international circuit in November 2012 with a tournament in Bangladesh, was ranked 1816. Since then he has risen to below 500 in the rankings, touching 491 in Sept 2013, which resulted in his being selected into the Asian ITF Touring Team. Players who perform well at these regional circuits will then be selected to join an international touring team. UMBAI: It was a day for a young lad from Rizvi Springfield, Prithvi Shaw to inscribe his name in the record books by becoming the third highest scorer in the cricketing world by smashing a superb 546 runs of only 330 balls against St Francis D’Assisi during the Elite Group match of the Haris Shield cricket tournament at the Azad Maidan on Wednesday. What was amazing is the 14year-old, played the entire knock with ease and poise and creamed the bowlers out of the park. Shaw stood his ground for a marathon six hours during his Herculean knock which included a staggering 85 boundaries and five hits over the fence and all emanated from proper cricketing shots. Shaw, play every ball on its merit which followed the directions of coach Raju Pathak sitting in the tent. However, as the saying goes, ‘Fortune favours the brave’ as Shaw made the most of 16 dropped chances in total. Shaw said. “They dropped some catches. It wasn’t easy for them out there. Some of them were diving catches, so it wasn’t easy. There were all difficult chances.” Resuming on his overnight score of 257, Shaw said he went to the field with a blank mind, not worrying and neither trying to accomplish any record. He said he
had told all his teammates not to remind him about his score as he just wanted to keep on piling on the runs. He knew that his anxiety levels would creep up when he was reaching the 500. However, not withstanding the instructions, his teammates told him he was a shot away from scoring 500 runs. “I didn’t know when I was in the 490’s because I told my teammates not to tell me my score as I was going well and I wanted to play my natural game. My teammates then told me I reached by 500. They cheered for me,” said Shaw. Shaw said what worked for him was the clear instructions from his coach. “Today I was having no plans and I was blank in my mind. My coach just told me to play how I want to. I was just concentrating with the singles and the twos and waiting for the loose balls.” Shaw went on to surpass his fellow teammate of Springfield, Armaan Jaffer who was 13 years
when he earned the record of the third highest scorer in school cricket. Shaw in his stay at the wicket, was involved in a partnership of 619 runs [404 balls] with Satyalash Jain who scored a rapid 164 runs of only 62 balls which included 14 fours and a six to enable their team reach a mammoth score at the end of the day of 991 all out. “He was batting very well and gave me all the support I needed,” said Shaw. They missed surpassing Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s 664run partnership by 45 runs. Shaw started playing cricket as early as four, and was enrolled in a cricket academy in Virar under Santosh Pingulkar. Shaw said it was his father’s friend who suggested that Prithvi should be enrolled in a coaching camp. “When I was four, I started my cricket. My father didn’t know about cricket, but one of my father’s friend told him to take me to a coaching camp. It was based in Virar. OCHI: After demolishing the West Indies in Sachin Tendulkar’s emotionally draining farewell Test series, the Indian cricket team will look to extend its supremacy in the ODIs as well when the two sides face off in a three-match series starting here tomorrow. The 2-0 whitewash against the Caribbean outfit was the perfect send off for the legendary Tendulkar, who called it quits after serving Indian cricket for nearly a quarter of a century. The emotional curtain call left everyone, including the man of the moment, in tears even taking the focus away from the cricket that was played. The epic farewell is now behind them and the Indians would try and ensure that it is just cricket that is talked about now. The home side already deserves credit for keeping itself focussed on the game in the Tests despite the frenzy surrounding Tendulkar’s retirement. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men were clinical, to say the least, in the way they went about their business in the Test series, taking full advantage of the West Indians’ shabby show to wrap up two Tests in a matter of five days.
Last chance for Anand to defend title in World Chess Championship

HENNAI: With four games to go, defending champion Viswanathan Anand will probably have one last chance in the ninth game to defend his title against challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the ongoing World Chess Championship here tomorrow. With eight games gone, Anand is down but still not out. It’s a twogame deficit for the Indian ace and the ninth game would decide the course of the match as Anand plays white tomorrow. Carlsen has been the pick between the two and he appears completely relaxed with his 5-3 lead. It’s a now or never situation for Anand as he has just two white games left. A victory in the ninth game will reduce the deficit to just one point and can unsettle Carlsen who is playing his first serious match. After four draws and two losses, the situation has brewed up before Anand can go for his comeback act. The last two games were the easiest draws. The eighth game was over in just under 75 minutes, giving the impression that Carlsen is also a contented man. Chess pundits had predicted that Anand will try to claw his way back in the match soon after the sixth game loss but the composure on Anand’s face tells a different story.
The Indians start firm favourites in the shorter format too with a batting line-up, which is in intimidatingly good form. Combining Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dahawn in the opening slots has proved to be a masterstroke so far with both scoring heavily in India’s last ODI assignment — the seven-match series against Australia. In fact, Rohit joined the all-Indian club of ODI double-centurions in the last match of that series, smashing a 158-ball 209, which included a record 16 sixes. At number three, India has another aggressor in Virat Kohli, who would be keen to carry on with the fine form. The middleorder has a solid look to it with the likes of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni himself.Of these, Yuvraj would be keen to make his mark after a rather extended ordinary run with the bat. In the bowling department, Mohammed Shami would be the one to watch out for as he seeks to be India’s newest pace hope after the steady decline of senior pro Zaheer Khan, who has been denied a central contract by the BCCI this year. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohit Sharma, an IPL find, and Jaydev Unadkat complete the pace

For the West Indies, the challenge could not have been bigger after the Test mauling. Darren Sammy would make way for allrounder Dwayne Bravo as captain of the side and the visitors would hope to restore some of the lost pride by coming good in the shorter format. The one man who would hold the key to their fortunes and provide much-needed spark is without doubt the dashing Chris Gayle. Gayle had a nightmarish outing in the Tests and was hardly noticeable. The big-hitting batsman would hope to make his presence felt in the ODIs. A lot would also be expected from the likes of Kieran Powell, Narsingh Deonarine, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin. Given that batting was one area which significantly let the team down during the Tests, the West Indians would do well to sort it out to avoid another thrashing.

OCHI: It would be a mistake to believe that India will enjoy an upper hand against the West Indies in the One-day series just because the Caribbean side has lost the Test series, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. India had won the series 2-0 but Dhoni said it was not an easy task to get that scoreline and the ODI format may actually suit the West Indies cricketers. “The West Indies are a good team. You may say that the Test matches got over on the third day itself and it was easy but it was not. There were situations where we were under pressure and then we had to build a partnership. It was not an easy series as the scorecard suggest. NEW DELHI: Long-serving Gurbax Singh Sandhu was retained as the national coach of the men’s Indian boxing team till the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “The Indian Boxing Federation is pleased to announce that Mr Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu will be retained as the Chief National Coach of the Indian boxing team till the 2016 Rio Olympics. This decision was taken in consultation with the Sports Authority of India at New Delhi recently,” the IBF, which is currently suspended, said in a statement. Sandhu, under whose guidance India won its first Olympic and World Championships medal through Vijender Singh (75kg), has been with the team for two decades. “I had retired in June this year but I am happy to get an extension. NEW DELHI: Hockey India today appointed former Olympic gold-medallist V Bhaskaran as a coach of the men’s national team to work under the recentlyappointed chief coach Terry Walsh. “Bhaskaran has joined the training camp of the senior men’s hockey team at SAI Centre, Bhopal for preparations of the FIH World League Finals in Delhi in January 2014 and the FIH World Cup to be held in The Netherlands next year,” the HI said in a statement. HI Secretary General Narinder Batra felt Bhaskaran’s experience will come in handy for the team. Bhaskaran has coached the team several times, the last time at the 2006 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Monchengladbach.
Tendulkar arrives in Mussoorie after retirement
DEHRADUN: Sachin Tendulkar, who announced his retirement from the international cricket, today arrived in Mussoorie, about 20 kms from here, to spend a quiet vacation with his family. The legendary batsman, accompanied by wife Anjali, headed straight for the hill station soon after landing at Jollygrant Airport in a chartered plane here, airport authority officials said. Tendulkar would be staying at a family friend and business partner Sanjay Narang’s hotel in Mussoorie. Tendulkar had spent a few days in Mussoorie last year also after announcing his retirement from the ODI cricket. The master blaster used to visit this hill station along with his family to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

TOKYO: The International Olympic Committee will discuss a proposal by Japan and other countries to reinstate baseball and softball in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, its new chief said today. “I’m personally open for more flexibility in the programme of the Olympic Games,” said Thomas Bach, who succeeded Jacques Rogge as IOC president in September. “But I still have to see what my colleagues in the IOC are thinking about this.
